Cherry, 6-foot, 185 pounds, appeared in 18 regular season games (12 starts) with the Canton Charge of the NBA Development League last season, averaging 11.6 points, 3.7 boards, 4.5 assists and 30.4 minutes. He scored in double figures 13 times and had 10 or more assists on three occasions. In the playoffs, Cherry upped his averages to 13.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 8.3 assists and 36.7 minutes in three games versus Sioux Falls. Cherry went undrafted in the 2013 NBA Draft after a four-year career at Montana. He was a three-time All-Big Sky selection and finished as the school’s all-time leader in steals with 265. That,s impressive given how crowded the driving were in Indiana last season.This is how Zach Lowe described the lack of space in Indy."Indiana’s driving lanes are always tight because the team doesn’t have a power forward with killer range beyond 18 feet. Itsperimeter players have an awful habit of standing in the way, in no-man’s-land around the baseline, instead of spacing out to the corners."There,s some shooting in Charlotte now and guys like Marvin Williams, Gary Neal and Gerald Henderson will at least get out of Stephenson,s way when he attacks.Stephenson is now working with one of the best low post scorers in the league in Jefferson and he,sexcited by the new partnership."When I go to the if he,s open I,m going to dish it right to him," Stephenson said after being introduced by the Hornets.Stephenson already has a relationship with Charlotte,s other offensive weapon, Kemba Walker.The two were rivals in high school and Stephenson is excited to re-unite."Kemba,s my guy, he,s very competitive and he was my rival in high school so I know his competitive edge and what he brings to the table," Stephenson said after being unveiled."Me and Kemba, the New York City back court, I feel like we will be unstoppable."Unstoppable is a stretch but I like his optimism.When debating Stephenson,s offensive strengths, the simple argument is to mention Indiana,s terrible offensive numbers.Yes, they were horrendous.But Stephenson WAS their only spark, the guy who offered something different.They ran more with him on the floor, scoring in the restricted area at a better rate and shooting a higher percentage from deep.Indiana scored 102.9 points per 100 possessions with Stephenson on the floor, and 98.3 when he was off.Paul George was more efficient with Stephenson out there too, shooting44.4 percent with Stephenson and 38.6 per cent without him per NBA Wowy.I,ve clearly mentioned his offensive prowess more than his defensive strengths, but that,s where I see Stephenson really helping this team.He has joined a team that is strong on the defensive end, and devoid of idea on the offensive side.Michael Jordan has copped a lot of criticism in the past, but his work over the last two off seasons has the Hornets in great shape.Just how far can they go in a WIDE open Eastern ConferenceTime will tell.
