LOS ANGELES — After earning his first NHL shutout in only his second career start, Martin Jones might be yet another potential star in the Los Angeles Kings crease. Or he might be further proof that any good goalie can be great with the Kings formidable defence in front of him, particularly against the feckless New York Islanders. Even Jones was leaning toward the latter theory after the Kings 3-0 victory Saturday night, but the teammates chanting his name in the dressing room gave him a bit more credit. “Its easy to play with confidence when youre behind these guys,” said Jones, who made 16 saves. “They take a lot of pride in their defensive zone, and we did a great job. The guys have been awesome since Ive been up here. Its a great group of guys, and Im happy to be able to get a couple of wins for them.” Anze Kopitar scored in another dominant defensive performance by Los Angeles, which hasnt allowed more than two non-shootout goals in any game since Nov. 2, earning a point in 14 of those 15 contests. Dustin Brown also scored and Tyler Toffoli added an empty-net goal for the Kings, who won their third straight overall despite a power play thats in an 0-for-33 slump. Before beating Anaheim four days ago in his NHL debut, Jones spent the previous three weeks backing up Scrivens during Jonathan Quicks absence with a long-term groin injury. “Its been awesome to see both (Scrivens and Jones) come in and play as well as they have,” Brown said. “We have a lot of guys that do the right thing defensively. All of our team is sticking with it, and you see the results in games like this.” Although Scrivens skated out first for the Kings warmups, coach Darryl Sutter told Jones in the late afternoon he would get his second straight start. Sutter wouldnt say why he chose Jones over Scrivens, or who might play first on the Kings upcoming road trip. Jones followed up his 9-for-9 shootout performance against Anaheim with a perfect effort against the Islanders, who have lost nine in a row. “It wasnt an easy game to play in,” Islanders forward Kyle Okposo said. “Obviously, theyre a really good hockey team for a reason. They all buy in and play the game the right way. They played their systems well tonight, and we just had a tough time.” Kevin Poulin stopped 21 shots for the Islanders, on their longest losing streak since dropping a franchise-record 14 straight in late 2010. New York has lost nine straight road games since Nov. 1, getting outscored 38-14 during its longest road skid since 1998-99. “I know what our record is, but its not like were getting dominated in these games,” Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. “If were not going to score any goals, its going to be tough for us. We didnt generate (anything) on our power play, and thats probably the difference.” After a scoreless first period, Islanders captain John Tavares set up his teammates for a pair of fine scoring chances during second-period power plays, but Thomas Vanek and Brock Nelson both failed to capitalize. Josh Bailey missed his own chance, clanging a backhand off the crossbar on a near-breakaway. Kopitar finally got the Kings on the board thanks to an exceptional long pass from Alec Martinez, who found his Slovenian teammate lightly marked at the far blue line. Kopitar slipped into the slot and used a slick move to score his eighth goal. The Kings perennial leading scorer has 20 points in the last 22 games. Brown added his sixth goal midway through the third period, capitalizing on confusion behind Poulin to gather the puck for an easy wraparound score. The Kings captain is having a rough offensive season, but has scored goals in consecutive games for the first time since late March. NOTES: New York dressed rookie C Nelson and scratched C Peter Regin, who had missed just one game all season. Regin is scoreless in his last 17 games. Poulin made his first start in a week after Anders Nilsson played the Isles last three games. … Los Angeles wore its purple-and-gold throwback jerseys on a “Legends Night” honouring Hall of Fame defenceman Larry Murphy, who set NHL records for most assists and points by a rookie defenceman with the Kings in 1981. … The Kings open a four-game trip Tuesday in Montreal. … New York has lost on the first two stops of its five-game West Coast road swing. MARANA, Ariz. - Ernie Els hardly ever catches a break at the Match Play Championship. When the first edition was held in 1999 at La Costa, he was trailing Paul Azinger going to the 18th hole when his tee shot caught the worst of lies in the rough. And it didnt get much better after that. He lost in the second round a year later to Bob Estes by missing a 4-foot putt on the last hole. He once blew a 3-up lead against Tom Lehman and missed a 4-foot putt on the 19th hole. And even the Big Easy could only laugh the year Phil Tataurangi buried a 25-foot putt on the bumpy greens of La Costa to force extra holes and beat him in 20. Just last year, Els lost on the last hole at Dove Mountain by missing from 5 feet to Freddie Jacobson. So perhaps this year is a small measure of justice. Counting the conceded putts, Els had a 75 on Wednesday and a 73 on Thursday. And somehow, the 44-year-old South African is still in the tournament. The latest win was a big one. Els was 1 down with two holes to play against U.S. Open champion Justin Rose and beat him in 20 holes. “I dont know if I can say I enjoy it,” Els said. "But its a different experience every time. Its a battle. Sometimes youre up for it. I found myself at times not being quite up for it. … Its a matter of who is going to gut it out. And thats, I guess, the nature of match play, is how much you want it. “But in this tournament, I havent done that well. Hopefully, I can go further now.” Rose made a bogey on the 17th hole to square their match. Then Els faced a tricky 6-foot par putt to extend the match on the 18th. “I just guessed right,” Els said. “For once, I made it. Ive missed it many other times.” On the first extra hole, No. 1, he stood on the crest of the hill and watched Rose hit his approach to 10 feet. Els hit his shot in nearly the exact location, and then poured it into the cup for birdie. Rose made his birdie putt, too. But it looked as though the ghosts of Match Play returned to play tricks with Els mind. With Rose in the bunker left of the green on the par-5 second hole, Els smashed a 5-iron right into the sun. He couldnt see where it was going, but thought it was good. It wasnt. The ball curled around the edge of the bunker and stayed on the slope of the brown collar. “An impossible shot,” Els said. He thought about lofting a chip onto the green and let it ride a ridge behind the cup back toward the hole for a reasonable look at birdie. He caught it slightly thin. The ball went into the bank of the green and trickled down to 4 feet, a tremendous outcome. Rose left his shot in the bunker, and Els made the birdie putt to advance. “It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime shots, really,” Els said. He was due for one of those. Next up for Els is another major champion, Jason Dufner. . MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City has stripped Carlos Tevez of the captaincy following his high-profile attempts to leave the club, with Vincent Kompany handed the armband. Tevez lifted Citys first trophy in 35 years after victory in the FA Cup final over Stoke in May. But the Argentina forward rocked the club during the off-season by expressing a desire to move closer to his family in South America. After a proposed move to Brazilian club Corinthians collapsed and no other clubs made firm offers, Tevez was forced to return to City. “The captain is Vinny Kompany,” City manager Roberto Mancini said. "The reason is simple. Carlos in the summer wanted to leave the club for family reasons. “I respected his opinion to leave the club, but Carlos is here now, we didnt find any solution for him. He is a fantastic player for us because he can score 20 goals in one year, but I decided in the summer Vinny was the captain.” The 27-year-old Tevez has been Citys top scorer for the past two seasons but will make his first start of the new campaign on Saturday against Wigan after failing to make the first 11 in the opening three matches. 09:24ET 10-09-11 wholesale jerseys . The two-time champion of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 led the final nine laps Sunday to take the checkered flag in the Jiffy Lube 100 presented by La Petite Bretonne. It was Rangers third straight win at the 2.113-mile, 16-turn road course on the grounds of Montreal-Mirabel International Airport. And it was Rangers 18th career win; 15 of which have come on road courses. Ranger took the lead from Alex Guenette on Lap 21 and wound up beating last years series rookie of the year to the line by 3.682 seconds in his No. 27 Mopar/Exide Dodge. “He [Guenette] was pretty quick, he gave me a lot of pressure, and I was a little tired of that so I let him go,” Ranger said of Guenettes pass on Lap 7. “I was behind him for a couple laps and right at the end I decided to make a move and I was able to take a nice gap.” L.P. Dumoulin finished third, followed by rookie Alex Labbe and Alex Tagliani. J.R. Fitzpatrick, Scott Steckly, rookie Gary Klutt, Jason Hathaway and Peter Klutt rounded out the top 10. With the win, Ranger moved up to one behind Kennington atop the Canadian Tire Series career list. On Saturday at ICAR, he also tied Fitzpatrick for the series poles record with his 14th. Ranger led a race-high 16 circuits on Sunday, and has paced the field for 60-percent of the laps turned in competition in four all-time Canadiaan Tire Series races at Circuit ICAR.dddddddddddd “Im very happy about my car, the guys did a really good job,” Ranger said. “First win for Mopar [as Rangers sponsor], its unbelievable, and first win for [car owner] D.J. Kennington too. Its great.” Guenettes runner-up effort tied a career-best, and was his best run in five career road course starts. He also led a career-high 14 laps. “I pushed hard at the beginning and then I kind of backed off when I passed him [Ranger], and so did he,” Guenette said. “I guess he was just overall quicker than me. Im glad I finished second to one of the best, but next time well setup the car better and Ill think about trying to have a better race and try to beat him.” Fitzpatrick maintains the edge in the season standings after three races, two tallies ahead of Dumoulin and 14 ahead of Kennington, who finished 12th Sunday. The race was slowed by just one caution for two laps. One caution tied the series record set twice previously while the two laps established a record for the fewest under yellow. Sundays caution came in Turn 1 of Lap 1 and involved six cars. The Jiffy Lube 100 will air on TSN on Sunday, July 13 at 11 a.m., and on the French-language RDS on Thursday, July 17 at 9:30 p.m. The Canadian Tire Series next race will be contested on July 11 with the inaugural Alberta Has Energy 300 at Edmonton International Raceway in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Phil Jackson won NBA titles as a player and a coach. Hell now try winning as an executive. And this quest will take him back to where his career began. Jackson has agreed to run the New York Knicks front office and will be formally introduced by the team at a news conference at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday morning, a person familiar with the negotiations between the 11-time champion coach and the franchise told The Associated Press on Friday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Knicks would only confirm that a “major announcement” involving team executives was scheduled. Jackson also did not make any immediate public comment, but the move had been expected for several days — and was practically confirmed earlier this week by Knicks star Carmelo Anthony, who said he had heard the Hall of Fame coach was “coming on board.” Jackson had been courted by clubs before, and fans in Los Angeles clamoured for him to return to coaching not long after he left the Lakers after the 2010-11 season. Hes largely shunned limelight during this three-year break from work, during which he did things such as working on his health — arthritis pain hampered him toward the end of his coaching career — and released a book chronicling his basketball life. Denver coach Brian Shaw, who played for Jackson and has been an assistant under him as well, said Friday that he would not be surprised to see one of his mentors take on the challenge of rebuilding the Knicks. “I think hes a basketball lifer, a basketball junkie,” Shaw said in Miami, where the Nuggets were playing the Heat. “I think that with all the success that hes had, what hes learned and his passion for the game, I think it gets boring when you do something like hes done all his life and all of a sudden youre kind of out of the mix. If he does do it, hed be excited about the challenge of attacking the game from a different position.” Jackson played his first 10 NBA seasons with the Knicks — he was there for 11 actually, missing the 1969-70 championship season because of injury. Jackson was a key part of the 1972-73 team that won the NBA title, topping the Lakers. New York hasnt won a championship since. Jackson has won 11 since, six with the Chicago Bulls and five more with the Lakers. Shaw has spoken with Jackson regularly during the season, saying that his former coach will sometimes call or text to ask if a play the Nuggets run was one that they used together during their triangle-offence days. But Shaw — who will likely be mentioned as a potential coaching candidate in New York if the Knicks decide to part ways with Mike Woodson — has kept his distance from Jackson during this will-he-or-wont-he process. “Ive kind of left him alone during this period of time because I know its a lot going on and certainly people are hitting him from every different direction,” Shaw said. Odds are, that wont change anytime soon. Jacksons arrival in New York will likely usher in a new era for the Knicks, who may miss the playoffs this season after winning 54 games a year ago. Even NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this week that he wanted to see Jackson back in the game, saying “the league needs him.” Apparently, the Knicks felt they needed him as well. New York could lose Anthony this summer through free agency, will likely look to upgrade their roster in several other areas, and Jackson will have to tackle all those issues — and plenty of others — even though the Knicks have spent about as freely as any team in recent years. And a playoff trip this year is hardly a certainty, with the Knicks currently on the outside of the post-season picture. With the Bulls, he had Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. With the Lakers, he had Shaquille ONeal and Kobe Bryant. With the Knicks, hell have more questions than answers, at least in the beginning of his first foray into life as an executive. Theres also the issue of how much power hell actually have working for Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan. Since the start of the 2004-05 season, the Knicks have gone through six head coaches and won a total of seven playoff games. Starting Tuesday, itll apparently be Jacksons job to change all that. Street put a shot on net from the slot and Knight was parked in front of goaltender Mike Murphy to slide the rebound in to break a 3-3 at 16:27 of the third. “Whenever Street has the puck in the offensive zone you know something good is going to happen,” said Knight. “I just went to the netaand lucky for me, it was a wrapped present.” Street scored for the second straight night since being reassigned by the Calgary Flames and now has 19 goals 37 points in 33 games with the Heat. “Streets such an important part of this team, both on the ice and in the dressing room,” said Knight. “He brings a calming presence and veteran leadership a lot of guys look up to. We knew hed be at the top of his game.” The line of Knight, Street and Brett Olson – who had three assists in the game – was praised by head coach Troy Ward following the game. “They were our best line the last two games, consistently in all three zones,” said Ward. “We threw Ben to the left wing, which he really hasnt done all year here. Hes usually a centre. There was a glimpse a couple months ago when Knight kept finding Street on the power play and he was burying goals. We knew there was some chemistry.” With 20 seconds left in the contest, Abbotsfords Olivier Roy made the biggest of his 32 saves after sliding across to rob Charlottes Chris Terry on a back-door play to preserve victory. “That save at the end of the game, the sprawl out, thats a reaction save,” said Ward. “Those types of saves he made all night. Its tough to win two in a row against any team in this league, andd tonight Roy was a big part of that.dddddddddddd” Sven Baertschi and Markus Granlund also scored for Abbotsford (30-14-4), which won its fourth game in a row. Dan Biega scored his first two professional goals and Zach Boychuk had the other for Charlotte (22-22-1) while Murphy made 24 saves in defeat. The Heat opened the scoring when Baertschi buried his third goal of the season, taking a feed from Corey Locke and backhanding the puck over the outstretched glove of Murphy at 12:43 of the first period. The Checkers, however, tied the game a few minutes later. Charlotte broke out on a four-on-one rush and Biega finished a give-and-go with Brett Sutter, beating Roy five-hole. Granlund put the Heat back up by one just 1:21 into the second period, finish off a two-on-one with Olson while shorthanded. Granlund beat Murphy for his team-leading 21st of the season and fifth in as many games. The Checkers drew even again at 15:26 of the second. Boychuk skated in and wired a shot past Roy from the top of the circle, blocker side, for his team-leading 22nd of the year. Street put the Heat back up by one at 9:30 of the third. With the puck lost in a maze of skates at the right face-off dot, Street spun around and fired the puck past Murphy. Biega once again, though, knotted the game up for the visitors, driving out of the corner towards the net before sliding the puck under Roy at 11:11. Heat defenceman Tyler Wotherspoon thought he had the winner on his stick with less than six minutes to go when he got open in the slot, but Murphy kicked his left pad up into the air to deny him of the sure goal. “He had a good look, a good release,” said Ward. “Thats an old-time save, a throwback, like Tommy Barrasso or Martin Brodeur, double stacking and throwing the pads up. It was a good save.” Abbotsford will look to extend its four-game win streak Saturday when they host the Texas Stars. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

The City of Markham and GTA Sports & Entertainmnent have called a news conference for Saturday to make a major announcement regarding the proposed GTA Centre project. GTA Sports & Entertainmnent is the group looking to build an NHL-sized arena north of Toronto. In September, they proposed a new funding formula that would see no public money used towards the construction of the building. The new option would mean the City of Markham would not have to borrow $325 million, a deal that was originally approved by City Council in 2012. The group also announced in September that two investment banking firms, Wall Street firm Jefferies LLC and Bay Street firm Canaccord Genuity, had joined the group. Tomas Kopecky scored the winner in the sixth round of a shootout, and the Panthers beat the Nashville Predators 5-4 on Saturday night after wasting a two-goal lead late in the third period. Kopeckys shot went past Marek Mazanec high on the glove side, improving Floridas record in shootouts to 5-5. Horachek was an assistant coach at Nashville from 2003-2013 before being fired after last season. He became coach of the Panthers AHL affiliate in San Antonio before taking over the Panthers as interim coach after Kevin Dineen was fired on Nov. 8. “It wasnt pretty, but it felt pretty good. You wanted to win against your former team,” Horachek said. “We hung in there and we hung in there, even giving up the two goals, let them tie it up. The guys stayed on point and we eventually got the other point.” Jonathan Huberdeau scored the first goal in the shootout for Florida. Kopecky also scored in regulation and Marcel Goc, Sean Bergenheim and Brad Boyes also scored for the Panthers. Tim Thomas made 38 saves in his second start after missing eight games due to a groin injury. Florida won for just the second time in six games. Thomas stopped five shots in the shootout after his team blew a two-goal lead. “You never want to go that route, but if youre there, you might as well get the two points,” Thomas said. David Legwand scored in the shootout for Nashville. Paul Gaustad, Seth Jones, Mike Fisher and Craig Smith scored in regulation. Mazanec stopped 25 shots. Nashville is 0-4 in shootouts this season and 0-17-2 when trailing after two periods. Their last shootout win was on Feb. 2, 2013, at San Jose. The Predators scored twice in the last 5:08 to send the game into overtime. Gaustad tied the game at 4 with 47.1 seconds left when he swept in a puck drifting through the crease behind Thomas. Nashville closed within one on Jones goal with 5:08 left. His wrist shot from the high slot went past Thomas for his first goal in 20 games. “If youre down by one goal it doesnt give you any points. Youve got to go for it and tonight we were fortunate enough to get that,” Gaustad said. The Predators appeared to be in control in overtimes but couldnt convert. “I didnt like the goals we gave up. They were too easy,” Predators coach Barryy Trotz said.dddddddddddd. “But talk about a character way to come back, there was great character on the bench, there was great push, we got that tied up and I thought we played pretty well in the overtime.” Panthers captain Ed Jovanovski made his return to the lineup for the first time since March 13, 2013. The 37-year-old Jovanovski underwent hip surgery and missed 83 games since the sixth game of last season. Jovanovski came into the game 1:20 and had 15:54 of total ice time and was on the ice for three goals. “Good just being with the guys being able to celebrate a goal,” Jovanovski said. “Theyre big goals during the game. We made it closer than we wanted to, but we found a way to come out with two points and thats important.” Leading 3-2, Florida stretched its lead early in the third. Huberdeau grabbed the puck behind the net and passed it to Goc in front. His shot beat Mazanec on the stick side at 1:34. Trailing 2-1, Fisher tied it with 3:28 left in the second. He took a nice drop pass from Colin Wilson low in the right circle and rifled the puck past Thomas. The Panthers reclaimed the lead a little more than 30 seconds later. Bergenheim wristed the puck into the net on the far side after getting a pass from Barkov to make it 3-2. Barkov has 11 points in his past 11 games. Kopecky broke a 1-1 tie with 2:04 left in the first. The puck bounced off the skate of Nashvilles Mattias Ekholm behind the net and out to Kopecky in front. He pushed the puck past Mazanec for his first goal in five games. The Predators took the early lead on Smiths goal at 6:32 of the first. The puck came out from behind the net to traffic in front. Smith found the puck behind the scrum and poked it past Thomas. Smith has six goals in his last eight games and leads the team with 12. The Panthers tied it on Boyes goal. Barkov took a shot that was blocked but Boyes jammed the rebound under Mazanecs pads at 11:03. Boyes leads the Panthers with 11 goals. NOTES: Smith has eight points in eight games and 16 points in his last 20 games. … Fisher has nine points in his past four games. … Jovanovski was the Panthers first overall draft pick in 1994 and a key player in their 1996 Stanley Cup finalist team. Jovanovski, a five-time All Star, was traded to Vancouver in 1999 but was brought back to the Panthers in July 2011 under a four-year contract. … Panthers winger Scottie Upshall returned after missing his last three games with an upper-body injury. The party celebrated the 40th anniversary of the WTA, and 17 of the former No. 1-ranked female players — from Chris Evert to Serena Williams and almost every top player in between — were in attendance. It was one of those pinch-me moments for Bouchard, and said a lot about how far the rising Canadian tennis star had come. “Moments like that are really special to me, and obviously I was just happy to be invited there,” Bouchard said in a conference call Thursday from her training base in Florida. A day earlier, the 19-year-old from Montreal was named WTAs newcomer of the year after reaching at least the quarter-finals five times in the 2013 season. Bouchard is ranked No. 32 in the world, tops among teenagers and Canadians. She reached her first WTA final in Osaka last month before losing to Samantha Stosur. Bouchard beat Stosur earlier in the year, her first victory over an opponent ranked in the top 10. She also beat No. 10 Jelena Jankovic as part of an impressive year. The young Canadian cant pinpoint any one thing that led to her swift rise through the ranks this past season. “I think its a bunch of factors, not something specific,” she said. “Its really my first full year on the pro tour, I learned a lot. Playing week in and week out against great players, and even great champions, is really tough, and it makes you mentally though. I think that helped me improve, and gave me a lot of experience for the rest of the year, so those big matches helped me a lot.” Bouchard earned US$415,742 in prize money iin 2013 by going 39-24 in singles play and 6-8 in doubles.dddddddddddd Bouchard was the first Canadian to win the award since Carling Bassett in 1983. “To be the second Canadian only is a cool thing I think, and obviously its a great award and its an honour to be named the Newcomer of the Year. So Im proud of that,” said Bouchard. While she raced more than 100 spots up the rankings this season, she knows next season is going to be a crawl. The higher she goes, the more difficult it is to move. “And then each small move, each small jump is more significant,” she said. “Strategy-wise, I have my coach (Nick Saviano) and Im just going to train really hard in this off-season and try to improve. I dont think theres a secret recipe, just a lot of hard work will definitely go into it on the practice court and then once Im in matches as well, really work hard and try to be the best I can be.” While Bouchard has become more comfortable as shes gained experience on the tour, she said theres no sense of “been there, done that.” “I think its hard to have that feeling . . . when you walk onto the grounds at the Australian Open or any Grand Slam or any tournament for that matter,” Bouchard said. "Tennis is what I love doing, so Im never going to get bored of it, and Im never going to feel like Im tired of it. “Im saying that now, but maybe when Im ready to retire at 30, maybe Ill have that feeling. But for now, its what I love doing, I cant think of doing anything else, and Im just going to go into every tournament with the same energy and motivation that Ive always had and always will have.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State cant count on many of its players to perform consistently well. Keith Appling has been an exception in Big Ten play. Appling scored 24 points to help the fifth-ranked Spartans beat Minnesota 87-75 in overtime Saturday after overcoming a double-digit deficit in the second half and blowing a lead late in regulation. “No lead is safe at the end of a game, especially in the Big Ten,” Appling said. The Spartans (15-1, 4-0 Big Ten) are well aware of that fact. The Spartans scored 15 straight points while holding the Golden Gophers (13-4, 2-2) scoreless for nearly 8 minutes after trailing 53-43 with 15:57 left. Michigan State missed an opportunity to win in regulation for the second straight game, losing a five-point lead in the last 13 seconds. The Spartans were without Adreian Payne because of a sprained right foot. “Theres nothing medically wrong that we can observe,” coach Tom Izzo said. “Theres no stress fracture. He wanted to play. Hes not being a wimp. He just didnt feel he could, so I didnt want to take a chance and suit him up.” Payne didnt start the previous game, but scored 18 points in an overtime win over No. 3 Ohio State in which Michigan State wasted a 17-point lead in the second half. “We deserve some criticism for how weve executed,” Izzo said. Late in regulation, the Gophers (13-4, 2-2) made plays and got a break that gave them a shot to pull off an upset. Minnesotas Malik Smith made his fifth 3-pointer, Gary Harris missed two free throws with 11.3 seconds left for the Spartans and DeAndre Mathieus layup with 1.7 seconds left tied the game and sent it to overtime. First-year Gophers coach Richard Pitino was glad Mathieu made the shot, but it wasnt the one he wanted. “I was running a play and trying to shoot a 3 to be honest with you,” Pitino said. Michigan State scored the first nine points of OT, ending Minnesotas chance to beat a top-five team on its home court for the first time in school history and to win at the Breslin Center for the first time since 1997. “Anytime you go on the road in a great environment and you step up for 40 minutes and you dont win the game, it is a bit of a missed opportunity,” Pitino said. “But there will be plenty more.” Minnesotas next two home games are against Ohio State and Wisconsin, teams currently ranked No. 3 and No. 4 in The Associated Press poll. The Spartans barely did enough to keep winning and match the best 16-game record Izzo has had in 19 seasons, equaling the record they had during the 2000-01 season as defending national champions. Minnesota guard Austin Hollins turned the ball over with 42 seconds left and teammate Andre Hollins had an ill-advised 3-pointer blocked with 23 seconds left, trailing by three on each possession. Then, the Gophers struggled to take care of the basketball in OT and couldnt stop the Spartans. “We just made some bonehead plays,” Andre Hollins said. Minnesota needed more than 4 minutes to score in the extra period and those points pulled it within seven. “We came in confident,” Andre Hollins said. “We expected to win this game. Its not a moral victory. We have to give them a lot of credit for making their free throws.” Andre Hollins scored 24 and Smith had 17 points off the bench. Smith scored 11 of his points, nine on 3-pointers, in the first 12 minutes of the game to help the Gophers lead 41-36 at halftime after making 7 of 12 shots beyond the arc. They made just 3 of 14 3-pointers in the second half and overtime. Harris had 19 points and redshirt freshman Kenny Kaminski scored a season-high 15 — all on 3-pointers. Appling said Kaminski, “saved the day,” for the Spartans. Izzo has not been pleased lately with Branden Dawson and Denzel Valentine and both played relatively well at times against Minnesota. Dawson finished with six points and 10 rebounds after not scoring and grabbing just three rebounds in the first half. “Theres something wrong with Brandan,” Izzo said. “Theres something bothering him. You can see it — you dont have to be a coach.” Valentine had nine points, 10 rebounds, four assists, four steals and a blocked shot late in regulation. “He got some big rebounds late and he defended better,” Izzo said. PAUL, Minn.WINNIPEG — They lost out on the Henry Burris sweepstakes but the Winnipeg Blue Bombers didnt wait long to land another quarterback, acquiring Drew Willy Thursday from the Grey Cup-champion Saskatchewan Roughriders for Canadian receiver and Regina native Jade Etienne. Winnipeg also signed Willy to an extension, reportedly for two years. He was scheduled to become a free agent next week and will be unveiled by the Blue Bombers on Friday at Investors Group Field. “Drew is a quarterback we have always thought had very high potential in this league,” said Winnipeg GM Kyle Walters. “He immediately upgrades us at this position and we really look forward to him being a part of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers moving forward.” But is he a starter who can win regularly, something a team that finished with a league-worst 3-15 record last season so desperately needs? Playing behind Darian Durant, Willy doesnt have a lot of experience. He posted a 2-2 record in his two seasons with the Roughriders and, at least on paper right now, is competing for the starters job with Max Hall and Justin Goltz. The six-foot-three, 215-pound Willy was 32-of-52 passing last season for 474 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. He saw more action in 2012, completing 69-of-95 passes for 709 yards, five TDs and four interceptions. Riders coach Corey Chamblin, named the CFLs coach of the year Wednesday after leading Saskatchewan to a their fourth Grey Cup title, has praised Willy for his composure. Willy wasnt Winnipegs first choice. He joins the Blue Bombers after they lost out to the expansion Ottawa Redblacks for the services of free-agent Burris, the CFLs passing leader last season who was released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Hall became Winnipegs starter last year as the Bombers struggled through a series of quarterbacks and traded veteran Buck Pierce to the B.C. Lions. Goltz, who had been considered by many to be the teams future, failed to measure up when he finally got his shot.dddddddddddd Willy, 27, is a native of Randolph, N.J., who spent some time in the NFL on practice squads in Indianapolis, Baltimore, San Diego, and New York and played in the UFL with Las Vegas in 2010. “I am really excited to join the Blue Bomber organization,” he said in a statement. "The support the team gets from the province of Manitoba is remarkable. “With such a deep history, the fans, the new stadium, and the direction the team wants to go, its going to be a great place to play. The people within the organization have shown genuine interest in me, and as a player, you cant ask for anything more.” He started two games in 2013, going 1-1. He earned his first CFL win as a rookie in a come-from behind victory at Winnipeg in the Banjo Bowl, where he completed 17-of-23 for 188 yards and a touchdown and ran for another. Willy played at the University of Buffalo, where he was the most prolific passer in school history, setting records for completions (849), attempts (1,322), yards (8,748), touchdowns (52), total offence (8,639), and completion percentage (64.2). “He is a quarterback with great promise in our league,” said Danny McManus, himself a Canadian Football Hall of Fame quarterback and Winnipegs new assistant general manager and director of U.S. scouting. "Drew has the attitude and determination you look for at the quarterback position. “He is physically and mentally tough, and can endure the challenges a quarterback faces, day in, and day out.” Etienne, 24, was an off-the-board first round pick of the Blue Bombers in the 2011 draft and after three CFL seasons had 20 receptions for 276 yards and two TDs. But he didnt see a lot of action until 2013 when he had 19 catches for 265 yards and the two touchdowns. Like Willy, Etienne was set to become a free agent next week. Téma: Jak postupovat / 1-1 tie with 3

DENVER — Jonas Gustavsson stopped just about everything, including the Colorado Avalanches six-game winning streak. The backup goalie turned in a 38-save performance and Johan Franzen broke a third-period tie with his second goal of the game as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Avalanche 4-2 on Thursday night to hand Patrick Roy his first loss as a coach. “He had a heck of a game for them,” Matt Duchene said of Gustavsson. Had a little motivation, too. This rivalry — pretty much dormant of late — just got a little more heated. The Red Wings played inspired hockey after a hard hit knocked defenceman Niklas Kronwall out of the game early in the first period. Seeing him carried off on a stretcher shook up his teammates. “Looked bad,” Franzen said. Once they learned he was all right — a cut on the ear and a concussion — they went back to dispatching the Avalanche. The Red Wings later announced on their Twitter account that Kronwall “has a concussion; cuts to the ear but hes moving all extremities, being treating in locker room.” Cody McLeod received a 5-minute penalty for boarding and a game misconduct. Pavel Datsyuk also had two goals and Daniel Alfredsson added three assists for the Red Wings. But the chatter after the game centred around the hit delivered by McLeod. “I dont know how much time he had to actually slow down there, but hes got to be able to at least lower his point of impact,” Franzen said. “Hes got to find a way to not hit (Kronwall) in the head.” Kronwall was momentarily knocked out. “It was really scary. He was out. He didnt really know what happened there,” fellow defenceman Jonathan Ericsson said. “We found out pretty early he was fine and he was going to recover fine.” Roy is withholding his judgment of the play, preferring to see what NHL vice-president of player safety Brendan Shanahan has to say. “To be honest with you, I didnt look at it because I didnt want to look at it,” Roy said. "I didnt want to make a comment on it. From the bench, I thought Kronwall turned his back at the last minute. “Does that make it dirty? I guess Shanahan has to make a decision. From the bench I saw a defenceman turn his back at the last second. For anyone who knows the game its hard for a player to stop.” Erik Johnson and Gabriel Landeskog scored for the Avalanche as they finished a win short of matching the franchise record for best start (7-0) set by the 1985-86 Quebec Nordiques. Still, its been quite a beginning to the Roy era on the bench. “Were 6-1. We still have the best or second-best record in the league,” Duchene said. “Its unfortunate we couldnt have kept it going against these guys, but we played hard and played really well.” The Avalanche simply ran into a hot goaltender as Gustavsson bottled up Colorados potent offence most of the game. Even when the Avalanche pulled Semyon Varlamov for an extra skater with more than 1 minute remaining, they couldnt sneak anything past Gustavsson. “That was a tough one,” Paul Stastny said. Franzens game-winner came on a power play when he took a pass from Justin Abdelkader and lined a shot over Varlamovs shoulder. Franzen also scored in the first period — his first two goals of the season. Datsyuk sealed the game when he scored off his own rebound 13:35 into the final period. Varlamov had a rough night against the rival Red Wings, allowing four goals. He had allowed just six in five starts entering the game. Landeskog and Johnson scored in the second period to tie the game at 2. Johnson took the puck from behind his net, skated up the ice with little interference and lined a shot over Gustavssons right shoulder. It was Johnsons first goal since Feb. 17, 2012. The opening period was dominated by a fired-up Detroit team following that hit on Kronwall along the boards. The hit sent his helmet flying as he crashed to the ice. This rivalry may just be heating back up. It used to be a bitter and bloody one during Roys playing days, but its tapered off a bit, in large part due to the slide of the Avalanche, who have missed the playoffs the past three seasons. Can this rivalry get heated again? After all, the two teams meet just twice this season as the Red Wings switched over to the Eastern Conference. “Were a long way before were getting to where the Red Wings are,” Roy said. “Its amazing what theyve been doing over the years. Theyve been there (playoffs) every year.” NOTES: Gustavsson made his third straight start with Jimmy Howard bothered by a sore hand. … Varlamov had an assist on Johnsons goal. … The announced attendance was 18,101, which topped the season opener (18,007). Bjugstad had two goals and an assist to lift the Florida Panthers to a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night. Brad Boyes and Brandon Pirri also scored for the Panthers. Roberto Luongo, who returned after missing Tuesdays game with an upper-body injury, made 27 saves. Bjugstads goals — his first two after 21 games — came less than three minutes apart in the third for his first two-goal and three-point game of his career. “It was a good night,” Bjugstad said. “We had to get pucks to the net. First game for that goalie and we wanted to get shots on him. It worked out for us.” Paul Ranger and Tyler Bozak scored for the Maple Leafs, and MacIntyre stopped 33 shots. The 30-year-old was making just his second appearance for Toronto this season. “Its been a long, long time but it was awesome. I have few regrets,” MacIntyre said. “I was hoping it would be a win, thats how I envisioned it.” MacIntyre was drafted by Detroit in the 2001 NHL Draft, which took place in the Panthers arena. “I looked up right at the end of the anthem and saw the Draft 2001 flag and I smiled at myself and said, Its been a fun ride. … I found it so funny that this rink is my first game.” The Panthers won for just the third time in 12 games. The Maple Leafs, who were in playoff contention most of the season, have lost six straight road games in regulation and are 2-11-0 in their last 13 games. The Maple Leafs were eliminated from post-season contention on Tuesday after a 3-0 loss at Tampa Bay. “Very challenging time right now for our group mentally,” Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said. “II thought wed have a little bit more compassion for the goaltender that was going in the net for his first NHL start.dddddddddddd… Its very disappointing.” At times, the Leafs certainly played like a team that was going through the motions. “Its the first one since were officially out, so its tough. Thats no excuse, weve got to have more pride than that,” Bozak said. Leading 2-1,the Panthers stretched their lead on a wraparound goal by Bjugstad, who came from behind the net and stuffed it past MacIntyre at 3:23 of the third. “Its good to get that off my back and not worry about it anymore,” Bjugsatd said about ending his scoring drought. Bjugstads second goal made the score 4-1. His short-handed shot from in front off a pass from Tomas Fleischmann easily got by MacIntyre at 6:02. Rangers shot from the point made the score 4-2 with 6:03 left. Boyes broke a 1-1 tie with 3 seconds left in the second. Bjugstad brought the puck from behind the net and passed in front of the crease to Boyes on the right side. He tapped the puck past MacIntyre. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead on Pirris goal 6:06 in. Pirri fired a shot from the top of the left circle and it hit the top right of the net. Pirri has points in five of the past six games. “Getting points is nice, but the team won in the end. Thats whats important,” Pirri said. “Were just trying to build every game and every day get better.” The Maple Leafs tied it 1-all on the goal by Bozak. Jake Gardiner dropped a pass to Bozak in the left, who wristed to past Luongo on the glove side for his 19th goal of the season, a career-high. NOTES: Pirri celebrated his 23rd birthday on Thursday. … MacIntyre has played for over nine different minor league teams over a 10-year career. NEW YORK — The New York Rangers escaped with two points they believed they deserved even though they gave up a goal they felt the Toronto Maple Leafs didnt earn. Mats Zuccarello and Derek Stepan scored shootout goals, and backup goalie Cam Talbot earned his second win in two nights as the Rangers shook off a late tying tally and beat the Maple Leafs 2-1 Monday night. The game was forced into overtime because of Nazem Kadris goal with 1:24 left in regulation — one the Rangers thought shouldnt have counted. After a wraparound attempt, David Clarkson took two whacks at the puck at the right post, and Talbot appeared to cover it, but Kadri came in and poked it in under Talbots pad. The NHL reviewed it in Toronto and said the goal should stand. “In my opinion, that was the wrong call,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "The referee told Brad (Richards) on the ice that if they didnt score on the wraparound, then it wasnt a goal. They didnt score on the wraparound. “The puck was underneath Cams pad. How (the reviewers) saw it differently, Im not quite sure. Youve just got to play through those things, and thats what we did.” The Rangers held off the Maple Leafs in a spirited overtime that produced several scoring chances and then outlasted them in the shootout. Zuccarello and Stepan scored in the first two rounds, and Talbot stopped Kadri in the third to end it. Joffrey Lupul was the only Toronto player to score in the tiebreaker. Talbot was relieved the Rangers pulled out the victory. “I would have been pretty devastated, especially with the game we played,” he said. “We deserved to win the game, and to get a goal like that against us could have really hurt us, but we kind of let it go, pushed forward and got the eventual game-winner.” Jonathan Bernier was exceptional for Toronto, making 42 saves through overtime and allowing only J.T. Millers goal 7:04 into the third period. The Maple Leafs played their third straight shootout and lost for the second consecutive time. They are 2-5-2 in their last nine. “We played a very solid road game,” Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf said. “It was very good to get a point.” Talbot, starting over slumping No. 1 netminder Henrik Lundqvist for the second straight game, bounced back from the late goal and improved to 8-2 in his first NHL season. He made 24 saves Sunday in a 4-1 win over Minnesota and helped New York finish its team-record, nine-game homestand 3-4-2. He nearly earned his third shutout in 12 career NHL games, all this season. The Rangers next play on Friday at Washington. Who will start in goal then for New York remains to be seen. “It is safe to say that were leaving for the holidays on a much happier note,” Vigneault said. "Its going to be a pleasant three days. “My parents are 81 and 79. I havent been home for Christmas with my girls for eight years, so I am looking forward to that.” Miller, recalled from Hartford (AHL) on Thursday, scored his second of the season when he came off the bench, streaked down the slot, and took a crisp pass from Chris Kreider from behind the net. Toronto nearly grabbed the lead just over four minutes into the third when Nikolai Kulemin was stopped in front and then had another drive hit the right post, slide along the goal line, and stay out. The no-goal call was confirmed by video review. Bernier kept the Maple Leafs in it, especially during the second period when the Rangers had a 22-5 edge in shots. New York was dominant again in the middle frame one night after a 17-5 advantage against Minnesota when the Rangers scored twice. “I dont think we played our best game, but we hung in there,” Bernier said. “We stole a point probably.” Bernier got the starting nod from coach Randy Carlyle two nights after he replaced James Reimer, who was pulled against Detroit after giving up three goals on 12 shots in the first period. Bernier made 25 saves in relief, but Toronto was beaten in a shootout. “Our goaltender stood on his head. Thats all you can ask in a game like this one,” Carlyle said. NOTES: Talbot made back-to-back starts two other times this season but not on consecutive days. … Rangers D Marc Staal took a hard skate Monday morning, while recovering from a concussion, and could be nearing a return. Staal missed his eighth game since he was struck in the head by the arm of New Jerseys Reid Boucher on Dec. 7. … Reimer had started three straight games for the first time this season before Monday. Reliever Drew Storen, already with men on first and second with none out in the seventh inning of a tie game, was on the ropes. Then Storen threw Stanton a slider. Swing and a miss. Strike three. Momentum shifted. Two popouts later, the inning was over with no damage done, and the Washington Nationals scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins. DETROIT — Robbie Ray provided a glimpse of what the Detroit Tigers saw in him when they acquired the pitching prospect for Doug Fister. Ray gave up one run in his major league debut and got plenty of run support, especially from Miguel Cabrera, to help Detroit rout the Houston Astros 11-4 on Tuesday night for its season-high seventh straight win. When Ray walked off the mound and toward the dugout in the sixth inning, he was given a standing ovation by a crowd that included his mother, father, fiancee and her family. “I did enjoy it,” he said. “I started tearing up a little bit.” Some of those same fans may have wondered what the Tigers were thinking when they traded a 14-game winner to Washington for the 22-year-old Ray during the off-season. “I got the sense that before today, they didnt know who I was,” Ray said. Now, they know and 27,939 fans probably liked what they witnessed from the hard-throwing lefty. Ray (1-0) gave up one run, five hits and a walk, and struck out five in 5 1-3 innings. He probably earned another turn in the rotation because Anibal Sanchez is on the disabled list with a cut on his right middle finger. “Id be surprised if it was somebody else,” Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Ray responded well when Jose Altuve led off the game with a bloop down the right field line, which he turned into a double. Dexter Fowler followed with an infield single after Ray ran past first base when Cabrera tossed him the ball. With the poise Ausmus predicted he would have, Ray struck out the third and fourth batters in Houstons lineup and an inning-inning groundout got him out of the jam. “That was a big inning,” Houston manager Bo Porter said. "You have a guy whos making his first major league start on the ropes with the middle of the order coming up. “But to his credit, he was able to get out of it.” The former Nationals prospect had a shot to have a scoreless start, but second baseman Ian Kinsler dropped a popup that allowed Fowler to score in the sixth innning.dddddddddddd “Hes got good stuff and a good head on his shoulders,” Tigers catcher Alex Avila said. “But people cant — or shouldnt — put pressure on the kid about being part of the Fister trade.” Cabrera homered in the first inning for his first of four hits and four RBIs. He raised his batting average to .293 after it was .206 on April 21. The reigning two-time AL MVP, who matched a season high with the four hits, had an RBI single in the seventh and a two-run double in the eighth. “Every player goes through a little bit of a lull once in a while,” Ausmus said. “Its just that I think Miggy has set such a high standard that people dont expect it.” The Tigers scored two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth. J.D. Martinez was the only player in Detroits lineup who did not have a hit until he had an RBI single in the five-run eighth. Houston, which has the worst record in the majors (10-23), lost its fourth straight and sixth in seven games. “Its a little tough, you know,” right-hander Josh Fields said after giving up five runs and getting only two outs. “Were struggling. But itll be all right.” Brett Oberholtzer (0-6) allowed four runs, nine hits, two sacrifice flies and a walk over six innings. “I thought he did a good job of battling and did a good job of leaving us in a good position when he left the game,” Porter said. The Astros bullpen, though, ended any shot of at least staying competitive in the game by giving up seven runs. “Extremely troubled,” Porter said. “If our bullpen would have been able to keep it there, it would have been a different ballgame.” NOTES: Detroit OF Torii Hunter extended his hitting streak to 13 games and had the first of Detroits three sacrifice flies. … Porter said RHP Scott Feldman, who has been on the DL since mid-April with right biceps tendinitis, will start Friday at Baltimore and said a decision will be made Wednesday or Thursday about who will be taken out of the rotation. NEW YORK - Adam Silver has become the NBAs fifth commissioner. The NBA posted a picture on its Twitter account Saturday of Silver holding a basketball and shaking hands with outgoing commissioner David Stern. “Its official: Adam Silver succeeds David Stern as NBA Commissioner” the caption read. Stern retired after exactly 30 years in charge, making him the NBAs longest-serving and most successful commissioner. Silver joined the NBA as his assistant in 1992 and has been the deputy commissioner since 2006. “It is a source of great satisfaction to me that the NBA will now be led by Commissioner Adam Silver, for whom I have tremendous admiration, respect and expectations as he and his experienced and dedicated team take the NBA to successes that were unimaginable even a short while ago,” Stern wrote Friday in a thank you email to media members. Stern announced he would retire on Oct. 25, 2012, and owners unanimously chose Silver as his successor. The NBA will now begin using balls with Silvers signature in games. Like Stern, Silver left the legal field to join the NBA. Originally Sterns special assistant, he went on to become NBA Chief of Staff before running NBA Entertainment for about a decade before replacing Russ Granik as deputy commissioner in 2006. Silver was the leagues lead negotiator during the 2011 collective bargaining negotiations and seemed to be more Sterns partner than deputy in recent years. “Its been Davids show. Even up to the last meeting. But there has never been a question whether Adam was involved in every important decision,” Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban wrote in an email. The leagues owners unanimously approved longtime league executive Mark Tatums appointment as deputy commissioner this week. . The team said Bryce Harper and Adam LaRoche also had operations this week. Harper had the bursa in his left knee repaired after it had hampered him last season. McCann was hurt in the third inning Friday night against Cleveland but remained in the game until he was pinch hit for in the sixth. Manager Joe Girardi said McCann was feeling cloudy. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — James Loney put the finishing touch on a Tampa Bay comeback victory. Loney hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the eighth inning and the Rays beat the Texas Rangers 5-4 on Saturday night. “I really felt good about James right there,” Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. “Hes calm, but hes got that thing going on inside. It definitely burns. He wants to win and he wants to play well.” Loney lined an opposite-field drive off Neal Cotts (0-1) that went over left fielder Shin-Soo Choo and put the Rays up 5-4. His hit came after Evan Longoria was intentionally walked to put the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base. “I was actually (surprised),” Loney said of the walk to Longoria. “They had a one-run lead, but people like to do that now.” Brandon Gomes (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth before Grant Balfour got the final three outs for his first save. Yunel Escobar and Matt Joyce homered for the Rays. David Price, who was sick Friday and almost didnt pitch, gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings. “Feel better since we won,” Price said. Texas right-hander Nick Martinez allowed three runs and four hits over six innings in his major league debut. “Nick gave us a chance,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said. “At the end, we had the right people in there, we just didnt get the job done.” Alex Rios put the Rangers up 2-0 with a two-out, two-run double in the first off Price. Rios has 12 hits in 30 at-bats with 10 RBIs against the Rays left-hander. Elvis Andrus made it 3-0 on a second-inning RBI single before Escobbar pulled Tampa Bay within two on a solo homer in third.dddddddddddd. It was announced before the game that Escobar and the Rays had agreed to a two-year extension for 2015 and 2016 worth a guaranteed $13 million. There is a 2017 club option. After Choo had a sacrifice fly in the fourth, Joyce cut the Rays deficit to 4-3 with a two-run homer in the bottom half. Maddon had a successful challenge for the second straight game. It was first ruled that Robinson Chirinos had beat Escobars throw from shortstop to first for an infield single in the second, but after a 1-minute, 35-second delay the umpires changed the call to an out. Maddon won his first replay reversal in the seventh Friday night after it was first ruled that right fielder Wil Myers didnt make the catch while sliding forward on J.P. Arencibias two-out flare. After a 1-minute, 43-second delay, the umpires ruled Myers did make the catch. “The umpires have done a great job with it,” Maddon said. “It seems to be working well.” Notes: Rangers ace Yu Darvish (neck stiffness) could throw up to 100 pitches in his first start this season Sunday. Alex Cobb (0-1) will pitch for the Rays. “Its going to be fun stuff,” Maddon said. “Its a marquee matchup.” … Texas 2B Jurickson Profar (right shoulder muscle tear) is fielding grounders, but no date has been set to swing a bat. … Rangers LHP Joe Saunders (bruised left ankle) played catch and will have his status determined by Monday. … Martinez had his contract purchased from Double-A Frisco. … Texas RHP Daniel McCutchen was optioned to Frisco. 23:20ET 05-04-14 cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

SAN FRANCISCO — Fred Couples extended his lead to five strokes Saturday after the third round of the Champions Tours season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship. Winless this season, Couples shot a 3-under 68 to reach 15-under 198 at TPC Harding Park. “I enjoy having a lead,” Couples said. “Sometimes when you go and play with a lead, you try to expand it. If youre behind, every shot is important. I dont do well with that. Im just going to go out and play. For the most part its about stepping up and just hitting it.” Mark OMeara was second after a 67. “Hell be hard to beat, no question, with his power and length,” OMeara said about Couples. “I have no problems with Freddy at all, hes been great for the game.” Fred Couples and Mark OMeara have known each other since both qualified for the PGA Tour in 1980. “The best things are the pairings,” Couples said. “I get Mark OMeara and it couldnt get any better for me.” Defending champion Tom Lehman had the best round of the day, a 65, to join Bart Bryant and Peter Senior at 9 under. Bryant shot 70, and Senior had a 72. Charles Schwab Cup points leader Kenny Perry was tied for seventh at 7 under after a 67. Bernhard Langer, needing a victory and help to catch Perry, also was 7 under after a 71. Couples opened the round with a bogey. He easily shook that off and worked his way under par for the day. “Its almost laughable,” he said. “I could play that hole 100 times and always make par. Making a good drive on the first hit and not making par is ridiculous.” Couples missed a 3-foot putt for par. “Im not going to get down on myself over my putts,” Couples said. “I missed a lot of putts. The worst I could have shot today was what I shot. The first two rounds were my best of the year. Today was not as easy.” OMeara played consistently well through the day, with his only hiccup a bogey on 17. He finished with a birdie on 18. “I drove the ball pretty well,” OMeara said. “I had some good opportunities early in the round when I hit good putts that just missed the hole.” OMeara recalled that Couples slept in his car during the first stage of the qualifying tournament in 19800, but was invited to stay with OMeara the final two or three days of Q-school. “Weve both had fairly parallel careers,” OMeara said. “We both made it through Q-school and the rest is history.” Couples and OMeara wound up playing together on the final day of Q-school in Fresno. “I was the last guy to make it make it,” Couples said. “I think he was one shot better than me, but we both qualified and neither of us ever had to do that again.” Couples said he was confident if one of his shots detoured into the rough. “I like this kind of rough,” he said. “If you put me in the soft, fluffy stuff, I dont do very well. Antonio Contes side moved eight points ahead of Roma with three rounds remaining. The two sides face each other in the penultimate match of the season, but Juventus is expected to seal the title next week when it plays Atalanta at home, where it has won all 17 of its league matches this season. Juventus also remained on course to become the first Serie A club to reach the 100-point barrier. “We have taken a very important step toward a historic third title,” Conte said. “We are having a super season. Claudio Marchisio fired Juventus ahead in front shortly before the hour mark after a chipped pass from Andrea Pirlo over the Sassuolo defence. And Fernando Llorente sealed the result when he finished off Stephan Lichtsteiners cross with a delightful backheel from close range 14 minutes from time. Contes jubilation after that goal and the whole teams reaction after the match expressed how close they are to the crown. “It wasnt a title celebration at the end because there is still a chance for our pursuers,” Conte said. “We have to seal it in the next match, I dont like anticipating things but we took a huge step forward.” Sassuolo is only above the relegation zone thanks to its head-to-head record with Bologna. The NHL has not decided whether to let its players participate in the Olympics beyond this year, casting doubt on who will be competing for hockey gold in four years. With the league set to push pause on its season for next months Sochi Olympics, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly also is allowing for the possibility of a security issue that could keep the players from travelling to Russia at all. “As of now, we do not doubt that all necessary steps are being taken by the Sochi Organizing Committee, the Russian government and the IOC to ensure the safety of the athletes and guests in Sochi,” Daly wrote Monday in an email to The Associated Press. “Obviously, if something significant were to transpire between now and February 9 that causes us to question that conclusion, we will re-evaluate. I dont expect that that will become necessary.” Russian security has been looking for three potential female suicide bombers, one of whom is believed to be in Sochi. The country has assembled what is believed to be the biggest security operation ever for an Olympics with more than 50,000 police and soldiers. “The NHLPA continues to be in contact with Olympic and security officials regarding plans for the Olympic Games in Sochi, and will work closely with all concerned to monitor matters in advance of and during the Games,” NHL Players Association spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon wrote in an email. Swedens Daniel Alfredsson has competed in each of the last four Olympics with players from the league and is looking forward to a fifth and probably final time next month. The 41-year-old Detroit Red Wings forward said it would be “bad” for the NHL to take the unique experience away from its players in the future. “Its an unbelievable experience,” Alfredsson said. The NHL and the players association will decide on future Olympic participation after Sochi, just as they have done since the top players started participating in the games in 1998. League officials just arent sure freezing their league for two-plus weeks in the middle of the season is good for business — especially when the Olympics are not in the U.S. or Canada. “The North American experiences have been better than far-away Olympics for a host reasons, including exposure,” Daly said in a recent interview with the AP. “When you have a North American-based Olympics, you can have a shorter period without NHL games. Were going to have the longest break weve ever had, and that could interrupt momentum for teams and have an effect on their competitiveness based on how many players they have playing, and how many injuries they have in Sochi.” The NHL had 150 of its players — at least one for each of the 12 countries in the tournament — picked to play. The league will not have any games from Feb. 9 through Feb. 24, a 16-day window that is between major American sporting events: the Super Bowl and the NCAA mens college basketball tournament. Instead of directly benefiting from the decreased competition for time and money from casual fans, the league can only hope that allowing its players to be in the Olympics draws more people to the game. “There are potential negative impacts with participating midseason in the Olympics and that factors into the overall analysis of whether its a good idea for us to go or not,” Daly said. When the Sidney Crosby-led Canadians beat the Americans for gold four years ago in Vancouver, nearly 35 million people watched on TV. “Its pretty obvious to say its good for the game,” Chicago Blackhawks and U.S. forward Patrick Kane said. But even if theres a rematch in the gold-medal game on Feb. 23, the audience likely will be much smaller because the puck is scheduled to drop at 4 p.m. in Sochi and at 7 a.m. or earlier in North America. Would the NHL let its players compete in the Winter Olympics only when theyre held in North America? “I dont think thats where we would go, but I wouldnt rule it out,” Daly said. Players, seemingly universally, want to play in the Winter Olympics for the sixth straight time in 2018 in South Korea — and beyond. The NHL and NHL Players Association have been in talks about bringing back the World Cup of Hockey that wouldnt conflict with the leagues regular season. Daly said the NHL and NHLPA are both in favour of creating a uniform international calendar. “A World Cup should clearly play a part in that,” Daly said. NHL players, meanwhile, dont want a World Cup of Hockey — perhaps every two years - to replace an opportunity to play in the Olympics. “The World Cup would be cool, but the Olympics are something else,” said Swedish and Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, who was picked to play for his country in a second straight Olympics. “Its all the best athletes in all the sports in one place, trying to get gold. To take the best hockey players out of the Olympics would be wrong and would be a shame.” . Nowitzki scored 28 points, Harris had a season-high 14 for the second straight game and the Dallas Mavericks beat the Detroit Pistons 116-106 Sunday night. With Monta Ellis struggling to take care of the ball — he had eight of Dallas 17 turnovers — Harris offered a steady hand in just his fifth game of the season after a setback in recovery cost him an extra month. “Im making the most of my experience on the floor, trying to get used to playing with different guys in different situations,” said Harris, who led Dallas with seven assists while making just one turnover. “Im using this as kind of my training camp.” Brandon Jennings had 26 points and seven assists to lead the Pistons, who lost their fourth straight. Josh Smith had 25 points and eight rebounds, while Greg Monroe had 20 points and nine boards. Jose Calderon scored 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting for Dallas, including a jumper that put the lead back in double digits for good with 2:37 remaining. Nowitzki was 10 of 16 from the field in his second straight game wearing a sleeve on his sore left knee after sitting out a loss in Toronto. Its not the knee that required surgery and sidelined him the first 27 games last season. The 7-footer had a pair of 3s and eight points in the fourth, including one that pushed the lead back to 13 during a stretch of three straight buckets assisted by Harris. Nowitzki scored five straight points in the final 2 minutes after the Pistons had earlier pulled within eight, and he led Dallas with nine rebounds and threw in four assists. “We know Dirk,” Detroit coach Maurice Cheeks said. “Weve known it for a long time. He can make a play for himself or give it to somebody else. He makes those 3s at the right time.” Harris scored five straight points in the final minute of the third quarter to break a 79-all tie, hitting a long jumper and the pulling up for a 3-pointer in transition. His other 3 early in the fourth capped a 15-2 run for a 94-81 Dallas lead. “On a night when Monta couuldnt get it going, its a godsend to have a guy like Devin available,” coach Rick Carlisle said.dddddddddddd “Hes an experienced NBA player whos really done everything.” The Pistons got within five midway through the fourth, but Vince Carter hit a layup to start an 8-0 run as the Mavericks answered consecutive losses on an East Coast trip by winning the opener of a four-game homestand that includes a pair of two-day breaks. After Carters bucket, Brandan Wright had one of his three fourth-quarter blocks on a drive by Kyle Singler, and Calderon hit a layup in transition at the other end. “We were close several times in the game to kind of blowing the top off and we got sloppy with the ball,” said Wright, whose three blocks were matched by Sam Dalembert. “But we stuck with it.” The Pistons opened the second half with a 12-2 run to get even at 58-all. Jennings scored seven straight Detroit points and had 12 in the third quarter, including a 3-pointer that gave Detroit its first lead since late in the first quarter. Jennings go-ahead bucket triggered a stretch of four lead changes and four ties in the third. “We made a nice run,” Cheeks said. “I thought Brandon played well in the third quarter. He was the difference in why we came back.” The Mavericks made 10 of their first 12 shots, but had seven turnovers in the first 9 minutes. DeJuan Blairs layup finished an 8-0 run that gave Dallas its biggest lead of the first half at 49-37, but Detroit answered with seven straight points capped by Kentavious Caldwell-Popes layup after a bad pass from Nowitzki, one of Dallas 11 first-half turnovers. NOTES: Carlisle said before the game he thinks Nowitzki will make the All-Star game as a reserve. His 11-year All-Star streak ended last season. All-Star reserves are announced Thursday. … Pistons C Andre Drummond had four points and six rebounds two nights after his first career game with at least 20 points and 20 rebounds against New Orleans. He had an 11-game streak of at least 11 rebounds snapped. … The Mavericks shot 61 per cent in the first half despite going 1 of 9 from 3-point range. HOUSTON — Houston starter Jarred Cosart made it through seven innings for the first time in more than a month on Saturday against Tampa Bay. His performance in the 7-3 win was much more impressive considering he was battling a case of food poisoning and was ill in both the second and third innings. “I felt terrible in the third inning, I thought: Im not going to make it,” he said. “But you keep pushing yourself. Its the competitive side. I didnt want to come out of the game. I didnt want to tax the bullpen and I guess I wasnt dying, so I was able to pitch.” Cosart (6-5) allowed nine hits and three runs in his longest outing since May 5 for the win. Matt Dominguez broke out of a slump with two hits, including a three-run double in Houstons big third inning to help the Astros to the victory. Dominguez was 1 for 12 in the first three games of this homestand before singling in the second inning. The Astros led by one when he cleared the bases with his double in a five-run third inning that made it 5-1. “He obviously had a couple days there where he wasnt seeing the ball too good,” manager Bo Porter said. “I felt like he did a great job of making them get the ball up today. The base-clearing double was a huge hit at that moment of the game.” Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer (3-4) was done in by an error and a lack of control in his shortest start this season. He allowed three hits and six runs — one earned — with three walks in three innings. The Astros got back on track after striking out a season-high 16 times in a 6-1 loss in the opener Friday night. Dexter Fowler had two RBIs and Marwin Gonzalez, who was filling in for the injured Jose Altuve, had three hits and scored twice. Altuve missed his second straight game after being hit on the right hand by a pitch on Thursday night. “Marwin he has been absolutely huge for us the entire season,” Porter said. “Whether its giving Dominguez a day at third base or stepping in at shortstop and now stepping in at second base for Altuve being hit by a pitch, hes been constant.” Evan Longoria homered and drove in all of the runs for the Rays, who have lost 15 of their past 18 games. Rookie Kevin Kiermaier doubled with one out in the first and scored on a single by Longoria to put Tampa Bay up 1-0. Gonzalez got things going in the third with a one-out double before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Fowler reached and Gonzalez scored to tie it at 1-1 on an error by Archer with two outs when he missed the catch at first base. Archer slipped and fell onto his stomach while trying to make that catch, and was unable to locate his pitches after that. He plunked George Springer on the left shoulder and walked Jon Singleton before giving Houston the lead by walking Jason Castro. Dominguez followed with his double to centre field, which hit on the wall just inches shy of the home run line, to make it 5-1. The play was reviewed and upheld. Archer escaped the inning by striking out Chris Carter. “I didnt execute pitches,” Archer said. “It had nothing to do with me not making that play at first base. Yeah, I was frustrated. Theres a ton of plays in a game. There were 40 pitches after that where I could have executed.” Alex Presley drew a walk to start the fourth inning and chase Archer. He was replaced by Cesar Ramos, who was greeted with a single by Gonzalez. Ramos struck out Jonathan Villar before Fowlers two-run double to centre field pushed the lead to 7-1. Desmond Jennings singled with one out in the fifth before Longoria launched his eighth home run this season into the Crawford Boxes in left field to get Tampa Bay within 7-3. NOTES: The series wraps up on Sunday when Tampa Bay left-hander David Price opposes Brad Peacock. … Kiermaier had two doubles on Saturday to give him 12 extra-base hits in 21 career games, which is the most in Rays history in such a span, surpassing the 11 Delmon Young had in 2007. … Houston RHP Josh Fields strained a muscle in his right forearm in the eighth inning. Porter said he didnt have any more information on the severity of the injury. . Love started practicing early for All-Star festivities, making six of 11 shots from 3-point range and totalling 32 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Timberwolves to a 117-90 victory over the Nuggets on Wednesday night. The Rangers take the series lead, again; the Blackhawks blow away the Blues and the Ducks stage a miraculous comeback to oust the Stars. Notes on Couturier, Keith, Seabrook, Miller, Daley, Seguin and more. RANGERS DOUBLE UP FLYERS The New York Rangers got goals from some less likely sources — including Marc Staal, Dominic Moore and Brian Boyle, into an empty net — to win Game Five over the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-2, givng the Blueshirts a 3-2 series lead. The other Rangers goal-scorer was Brad Richards, and it came off a goal-mouth scramble that netted J.T. Miller and assist. Miller, the 21-year-old who was a first-round pick in 2011, has 10 points in 56 career games with the Rangers, but had 43 points in 41 AHL games this season and joined a line with Richards and Carl Hagelin. New Yorks line of Derek Stepan, Rick Nash and Martin St. Louis controlled play. Aside from setting up Staals game-opening goal, the trio was on for more than 70% of 5-on-5 shot attempts, mostly against the Flyers line of Sean Couturier, Matt Read and Jason Akeson. Couturier and Read are the Flyers forwards playing the most in this series and Couturier hasnt recorded a single point. Yes, hes a responsible checking centre, but its tough to run a forward out for more than 100 minutes in five games and get no points out of that ice-time investment. Inserted into the Flyers lineup for an injured Nicklas Grossman, Hal Gill had a rough game, involved in two Rangers goals against, and it was a hard situation in which to place a guy who had played two games since Christmas. The series heads back to Philadelphia for Game Six and the Flyers have to find a way to generate better results in a hurry. The Blueshirts hold a possession edge and have the better goaltender. BYE BYE BLUES Tied 1-1 going into the third period of Game Six, the Chicago Blackhawks erupted for four goals to pull away from the St. Louis Blues, finishing off the series. Blackhawks D Duncan Keith led the way offensively, tallying a goal and three assists, and with Keith on the ice, the Blackhawks held a 20-13 (60.6%) edge in shot attempts. With Keith off the ice, the 5-on-5 shot attempts favoured St. Louis 32-16 (66.7%). Keiths defence partner, Brent Seabrook, had a couple of assists in his first game back after serving a three-game suspension, and RW Andrew Shaw added a goal and an assist. Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews was the pace-setter in the series, scoring three goals and seven points, with all of his goals counting as game-winners. Seabrook, who only played in three games due to his suspension, finished the series with six points and Keiths big Game Six gave him seven points for the series as well. For the Blues, there is going to be a lot of reflection because this is a team that expected to last longer than one round in the postseason, but this result shouldnt raise major concerns. They played the Blackhawks very evenly, with four of the six games in the series going to overtime, and had to play two of the games without their No. 1 centre. Considering the late run of injuries that led to the Blues losing six straight to end the regular season, setting up this matchup, its also fair to wonder if the Blues could have fared better with fewer health concerns. The Blues held a >slight possession edge in the series, but got the second-best goaltending results. Chicagos Corey Crawford stopped 201 of 215 shots (.935 SV%) while Blues G Ryan Miller, after getting torched for five goals on 26 shots in the series finale, stopped 166 of 185 (.897 SV%). Could the Blues usee an upgrade or two? Sure, maybe a centre to help Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko, or a premier finisher for the top line that could allow T.ddddddddddddJ. Oshie or Alexander Steen to slide to the second line. In the end, the Blues were a really good team that played well, but not quite well enough to knock off the defending champs, who are legitimate Cup contenders again this year. There is no shame in losing to this Blackhawks team. The Blackhawks will now wait for the winner of the Colorado-Minnesota series and Chicago will be favoured against either one.. FALLING STARS Just when it looked like the Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks would be headed back to Anaheim for Game Seven — with the Stars holding a 4-2 lead late in the third period — a goal-mouth scramble resulted in coincidental roughing penalties to Dallas Alex Chiasson and Anaheims Andrew Cogliano. 16 seconds later, Nick Bonino tied the game. Then, with 24 seconds left, Devante Smith-Pelly pounced on a loose puck and buried it for the tying goal. 2:47 into overtime, Bonino scored again, giving the Ducks a dramatic 5-4 win in Game Six, allowing the Ducks to escape with a series victory not so long after it appeared that the series was surely going the distance. Bonino and Smith-Pelly each had a pair of goals for Anaheim, while Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne each delivered a pair of assists. Selanne played 14:08 and had five shots on goal, both marking highs for him in a series that saw him made a healthy scratch. That the Ducks won a series in which they yanked starting goaltender Frederik Andersen twice shows just how back-and-forth it was. Andersen was pulled from Game Six after allowing four goals on 12 shots, leaving him with an .892 save percentage in the series; the kind of play that could leave virtually-exiled veteran Jonas Hiller an opportunity to start at some point in Round Two. Hiller stopped all 12 shots he faced after relieving Andersen. The Stars were led in Game Six, and for good portions of the series, by their top defence tandem of Trevor Daley and Alex Goligoski. Daley had two goals and an assist Sunday, while Goligoski added two assists. They combined for nine points in the series and were both on for more than 58% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts when they were on the ice. Stars C Cody Eakin had a goal and an assist in the deciding game, giving him five points for the series; tied with Daley, LW Jamie Benn and C Shawn Horcoff for the team scoring lead. Stars C Tyler Seguin could have used some more reward for what was relatively impressive play. He was on the ice for 61.8% of 5-on-5 shot attempts and had 29 shots on goal in six games, yet mustered one goal and three points. There was a real opportunity for the Stars to take this series, but needed a more decisive advantage in goal, particularly with Andersen running hot and cold. In the Dallas net, Kari Lehtonen stopped 146 of 165 shots (.885%) and, as it turns out, that was only a save or two short of what the Stars needed to push this series to the limit. Even though the Stars won the possession battle, they couldnt slow down Anaheims otherwordly 5-on-5, score close shooting percentage (12.7% in Round One). Now, the Ducks wait for the winner of the Sharks and Kings which will, in either case, present a daunting matchup. But, after the way the Ducks won Game Six, let em celebrate a bit first. GUADALAJARA, Mexico — After clinching an Olympic berth that had been a long time coming, Dorothy Ludwig thought about her dad. Ludwig, whose father Bill Hare was a three-time Olympian in shooting, earned her own trip to the Games on Sunday, winning gold in a dramatic 10-metre air pistol event that went down to the final shot. “(The Olympics) have always been a goal, and moreso since my dad passed away in 2005,” said Ludwig, whose dad was also her coach. “Its something you always push towards, you always have in the back of your mind, definitely.” The 32-year-old from Langley, B.C., who needed a victory to qualify for London, scored 476.8, only 0.1 points better than silver medallist Maribel Pineda of Venezuela. American Sandra Uptagrafft won the bronze. Canadas dressage team of Tom Dvorak of Hillsburg, Ont., Tina Irwin of Stouffville, Ont., Crystal Kroetch of Innisfail, Alta., and Roberta Byng-Morris of Godmanchester, Que., won silver and qualified for the Olympics. “The team chemistry has been great. It is such a good team. Im super pleased,” Dvorak said. “Our goal was to come and get a medal, but to win a silver medal is an accomplishment. There was a lot riding on us and the competition was such a high caliber this year.” The rhythmic gymnastics team — Katrina Cameron of Mississauga, Ont., Torontos Rose Cossar, Anastasiya Muntyanu, and Anjelika Reznik, Alexandra Landry of Ajax, Ont., and Kelsey Titmarsh of Thornhill, Ont. — won silver in the group all-around event. “Our team could have been much better today but it is really important that we come back and really show what we can do,” said Muntyanu. “Weve practised so long for this and we can achieve amazing things and impress everyone.” Earlier in the day, Laura Brown of Vancouver raced to bronze in cyclings individual time trial. Ludwig, mother to six-month-old son Erden, said she tried not to focus too much about the Olympic berth on the line. “The biggest thing for me was to stay relaxed, and to remind myself its not the end of the world and I am here with the training I had behind me, and I could only do my best,” Ludwig said. “Today my best was an excellent performance and it got me what I wanted.” The Canadian, whos been a competitive shooter for 19 years, sat in third place before her final shot clinched the gold. “Its a bit of a surreal experience,” said Ludwig. “I was in this spot four years ago (at Pan Ams in Brazil) and I went from first to fourth so this is an amazing feeling and I know how the girl in first-place feels, I really do.” The gold medal was Canadas second at the Games, coming a day after Ivett Gonda won the 49-kilogram class at taekwondo. Brown, meanwhile, drew motivation from her teammates and soaked up the energy from a loud Mexican crowd, pedalling to third place. The 24-year-old from Vancouver covered the 20-kilometre course that looped around the historic area of Guadalajara in 28 minutes 24 seconds. “They lined the entire course, Ive never been to a Games and Im blown away,” Brown said of the crowd. “I had cheers throughout the whole course, it was pretty special being out there, I felt like I had a lot of support from everyone. It was very motivating.” Colombias Maria Luisa Calle won the gold in 28:004.dddddddddddd.82, while Evelyn Garcia of El Salvador captured the silver. Denise Ramsden of Hay River, N.W.T., was seventh. Marlon Perez of Colombia won the mens race. Remi Pelletier-Roy of Longueuil, Que., was ninth, while Rob Britton of Regina was 12th. Browns medal came a day after Max Plaxton claimed silver in the mens mountain bike and Amanda Sin won bronze in the womens event, and Brown said her teammates provided a big motivational boost. “Just the look on their faces was enough, tears in their eyes, the big applause when they came up and showed us their medals. They didnt have to say anything, that did it for me,” she said. Fans have flocked to the cycling races both days. Two days into the Games, the people of Guadalajara seem to be embracing the biggest sporting event Mexico has held since the 1986 World Cup. The swimming and taekwondo venues have both been jam-packed, and there was a line that stretched some 100 metres long at the main ticket window Sunday. “Ive never been to a Games, and Im blown away,” Brown said. "The Mexican people have done a great job. Even driving down the road in a Guadalajara van, you gets honks and waves. “Its a pretty big deal down here. Im so honoured to win a medal for Canada.” Canadian Shawn Delierre is through to the squash semifinals, while Canadas No. 1-ranked player Shahier Razik has been eliminated. Delierre, from Montreal, defeated Brazils Rafael Fernandes 11-7, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7. Razik was ousted in the quarter-finals by Cesar Salazar of Colombia, 11-9, 11-3, 11-4. At the rowing in Ciudad Guzman, Isolda Penney of Kingston, Ont., won her heat to advance to the A final. “I felt I was in total control the whole race and Im looking forward to the final,” Penney said. The Canadian mens light four — Terence McKall of Edmonton, Travis King of Grimsby, Ont., Eric Woelfl of St. Catharines, Ont., and Derek Vinge of Fernie, B.C. — advanced to the A final with a second-place finish in their heat. World bronze medallist Steven Van Knotsenburg of Beamsville, Ont., and Peter McClelland of Aurora, Ont., advanced to the final after finishing second in their repechage, while the womens quad was fourth in what is essentially a race for lanes, with all boats advancing to the final. In beach volleyball at Puerto Vallarta, Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto won their opening beach, defeating Virginia Zonta and Ana Gallay of Argentina 18-21, 22-20, 15-6 at the beach resort city. “We were a little nervous at the start,” said Maloney. “Its a pair we have never played before and it took us a couple of sets to figure them out.” In swiming, Gabrielle Soucisse of Montreal finished sixth in the womens 100 backstroke while the mens 4X100 freestyle relay took seventh spot. In the relay, the Canadian team members were Lyam Dias of Pointe-Claire, Que., Rory Biskupski of Vancouver, Frank Despond of Toronto and Ashton Baumann of Ottawa. The foursome was hoping to place higher in the standings. “We were OK,” said Biskupski. “I think the team put in a good effort because we took off more time from the preliminaries this morning so we are finishing with a plus.” Jennifer Beckberger of Ajax, Ont., was the other Canadian finalist on the night placing eighth in the womens 200 freestyle. Three new faces headline the Top 10 of Craig Buttons latest TSN.ca NHL Draft Ranking. The most impressive leap into the Top 10 came from Belleville goaltender Malcolm Subban, who jumped to 10th from being ranked 17th-overall in March. Malcolm – the younger brother of Canadiens defenceman PK Subban – has shot up Buttons draft board over the course of the year. He did not crack the Top-30 until December, but has risen substantially the past two months after being ranked 22nd-overall in February. Finnish forward Teuvo Teravainen jumped from No. 13 up to No. 7, while Swedish defender Hampus Lindholm moved up three positions to number nine. The top six players remained unchanged with Nail Yakupov maintaining his season-long stranglehold on the number one position. He was followed by: Red Deer defender Matthew Dumba, Leksands winger Filip Forsberg, Moose Jaw defender Morgan Rielly, Sarnia centre Alex Galchenyuk and Edmonton blueliner Griffin Reinhart, who all held their previous rankings. Marchs big mover – Ottawas Cody Ceci – slipped a little to the 11th spot after jumping all the way from the 20th position to ninth in the previous rankings. Meanwhile, the furthest fall of the month was also the highest-profile. Quebec Remparts forward Mikhail Grigorenko – who had held a top-10 ranking since September and is the third-ranked North American skater in the NHL Central Scouting final rankings – fell from seventh overall down to the 14th position. The highest climber in the April rankings was Plymouth winger Tom Wilson, who jumped an impressive 12 spots, landing at No. 22. The highest ranking debut this month went to Finnish defender Mikko Vainonen, who debuted just outside the first round at number 34. Vainonen has scored seven goals and 11 assists in 38 games with HIFK of the SM-liiga. Click here at (http://www.tsn.ca/craigslist) for the full Top 60 prospect list. TSN Scout Craig Button is part of TSN and TSN.cas expanded DraftCentre coverage. Craig started in the NHL as a scout with the Minnesota North Stars and stayed with the organization through the move to Dallas. He later became Director of Player Personnel, helping lead the Stars to a Stanley Cup in 1999. From 2000 to 2003, Craig served as Vice President and General Manager of the Calgary Flames and later joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as a scout. Agent Mike McCartney confirmed via Twitter on Sunday that Mendenhall had decided to end his playing career after six NFL seasons, all but one of them with the Pittsburgh Steelers.SOCHI, Russia — A Russia in search of global vindication kicked off the Sochi Olympics looking more like a Russia that likes to party, with a pulse-raising opening ceremony about fun and sports instead of terrorism, coddling despots and gay rights. And thats just the way Vladimir Putin wants these Winter Games to be. The worlds premier athletes on ice and snow have more to worry about than geopolitics as they plunge into the biggest challenges of their lives on the mountain slopes of the Caucasus and in the wet-paint-fresh arenas on the shores of the Black Sea. But watch out for those Russians on their home turf. A raucous group of Russian athletes had a message for their nearly 3,000 rivals in Sochi, marching through Fisht Stadium singing that theyre “not gonna get us!” Superlatives abounded and the mood soared as Tchaikovsky met pseudo-lesbian pop duo Tatu. Russian TV presenter Yana Churikova shouted: “Welcome to the centre of the universe!” Yet no amount of cheering could drown out the real world. Fears of terrorism, which have dogged these Games since Putin won them amid controversy seven years ago, were stoked during the ceremony itself. A passenger aboard a flight bound for Istanbul said there was a bomb on board and tried to divert the plane to Sochi. Authorities said the plane landed safely in Turkey. The show opened with an embarrassing hiccup, as one of five snowflakes failed to unfurl as planned into the Olympic rings, forcing organizers to jettison a fireworks display and disrupting one of the most symbolic moments in an opening ceremony. Some world leaders purposely stayed away, but U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and dozens of others were in Sochi for the ceremony. He didnt mention the very real anger over a Russian law banning gay “propaganda” aimed at minors that is being used to discriminate against gay people. But IOC President Thomas Bach won cheers for addressing it Friday, telling the crowd its possible to hold Olympics “with tolerance and without any form of discrimination for whatever reason.” Also missing from the show: Putins repression of dissent, and inconsistent security measures at the Olympics, which will take place just a few hundred kilometres away from the sites of a long-running insurgency and routine militant violence. And the poorly paid migrant workers who helped build up the Sochi site from scratch, the disregard for local residents, the environmental abuse during construction, the pressure on activists, and the huge amounts of Sochi construction money that disappeared to corruption. For all the criticism, there was no shortage of pride at the ceremony in what Russia has achieved with these Games. The head of the Sochi organizing committee, Dmitry Chernyshenko, captured the mood of many Russians present when he said, “Were now at the heart of that dream that became reality.” “The Games in Sochi are our chance to show the whole world the best of what Russia is proud of,” he said. “Our hospitality, our achievements, our Russia!” The ceremony presented Putins version of todays Russia: a country with a rich and complex history emerging confidently from a rocky two decades and now capable of putting on a major international sports event. Putin himself was front and centre, declaring the Games open from his box high above the stadium floor. Earlier, he looked down as the real stars of the Games — those athletes, dressed in winter wear of so many national colours to ward off the evening chill and a light dusting of man-made snow — walked onto a satellite image of the earth projected on the floor, the map shifting so the athletes appeared to emerge from their own country. As always, Greece — the birthplace of Olympic competition — came first in the parade of nations. Five new teams, all from warm weather climates, joined the Winter Olympics for the first time. Togos flagbearer looked dumbstruck with wonder, but those veterans from thhe Cayman Islands had the style to arrive in shorts.dddddddddddd Canada entered midway through the march. Womens hockey star Hayley Wickenheiser carried the Maple Leaf to lead representatives from Canadas 220-athlete team. Its Canadas biggest team ever assembled for a Winter Games. “To represent the best of Canada is such an honour, its chilling,” Wickenheiser said. “There is so much excitement.” Canada looked sharp in outfits designed by Hudsons Bay, featuring a red coat with toggle style buttons and a black stripe adorning the hip line. The women in the Canadian contingent wore black mock turtlenecks and wool V-neck sweaters, while the men sported a tailored white dress shirt, wool cardigan and red and white striped ties. Black bottoms rounded out the ensembles “I wish our Olympians the best of luck as they take on the world in Sochi,” Prime Minister Stephen Harper posted on his Twitter account. Canadas target is to finish first overall in the medal count after finishing third with 26 medals at home in 2010. Not all of Canadas athletes marched into Fisht Olympic Stadium. The mens hockey team hasnt arrived yet, figure skaters are in the middle of the team competition and skiers and sliders are staying too far away from the host city. The smallest teams often earned the biggest cheers from the crowd of 40,000, with an enthusiastic three-person Venezuelan team winning roars of approval as flag bearer and alpine skier Antonio Pardo danced and jumped along to the electronic music. Only neighbouring Ukraine, scene of a tense and ongoing standoff between a pro-Russian president and Western-leaning protesters, could compete with those cheers. That is, until the Russians arrived. Walking in last to a thundering bass line that struggled to overcome the ovations from the hometown crowd, the Russians reveled in all the attention. Their feeling could perhaps best be summed up by Russian singers Tatu, whose hit “Not Gonna Get Us” accompanied them to their seats. Russians place huge significance in the Olympics, carefully watching the medal count — their dismal performance in Vancouver four years ago is on the minds of many. These Games are particularly important, as many Russians are still insecure about their place in the world after the end of the Cold War and the years since that have seen dominance of the United States and China. International politics were never far beneath the surface. One member of the VIP crowd carrying the Olympic flag was Anastasia Popova, a young televison reporter with the state-owned Rossiya TV channel, best known for her reporting in Syria. Putin and Russian state media have stood strongly behind Syrian President Bashar Assad, and Popovas coverage laid the blame for the Syrian civil war squarely on Syrian rebels. But back to that Russian pride. As Churikova rallied the crowd to scream “louder than ever,” she told the fans in their cool blue seats their keepsakes from the night would last 1,000 years. When explaining the show would be hosted in English, French and Russian, she joked that it didnt matter, because in Sochi, everyone “speaks every language in the world.” The moment of high pride came at the end, when Russian hockey great Vladislav Tretiak and three-time gold medallist Irina Rodnina joined hands to light the Olympic cauldron. Hes often called the greatest goaltender of all time by those who saw him play, she won 10 world pairs figure skating titles in a row. That was how it ended. At the top, the show — and the Games — easily avoided talking about prickly issues even when the women in Tatu took the stage. The duo, who put on a lesbian act that is largely seen as an attention-getting gimmick, merely held hands during their performance on this night, stopping short of the groping and kissing of their past performances. This time? Their lead-in act was the Red Army Choir MVD singing Daft Punks Grammy-winning “Get Lucky.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

Téma: Jak postupovat / Nike Kobe IX Shoes Dwyane Wade re-signs with Miami Heat

Wade signed a new contract with the Heat on Tuesday. It,s a two-year deal, the second of those seasons a player option, said a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither side announced terms."I am proud to have spent every single day of my career as a member of the Miami Heat and to have brought three championship titles to this great city," Wade said in a statement. "I,ve been here through the good times and the hard times. I have confidence in the Miami Heat organization and the team they are building."Earlier Tuesday, Wade tweeted "Home Is Where The Heart Is… My Home,My City,My House" and attached a photo of himself standing below the three NBA Nike Kobe IX Shoes banners that hang at Miami,s home arena.Financial terms were not announced, though it,s expected Wade,s salary for next season will not reach the $20.2 million he would have made under his previous contract.Heat President Pat Riley confirmed that Wade again bought into the Heat mantra of sacrifice. The contract he signed four years ago left millions on the bargaining-room table, in part to make the deals with LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Udonis Haslem happen."Dwyane has been the franchise cornerstone for this team since the day he arrived 11 years ago," Riley said. "He has shown his commitment to the Heat many times over the course of his career and has always been willing to sacrifice in order to help build this team into a champion. This time is no different."Wade,s return was expected, yet still represents a huge win for Miami during free agency – especially since it comes less than a week after James left the Heat after four seasons and returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers. So now, what was the "Big 3" is a "Big 2." Bosh is in the process of finishing a $118 million, five-year contract with Miami. Also Tuesday, the Heat signed Luol Deng to a Nike Kobe IX Shoes $20 million deal, which was agreed to over the weekend. "Luol Deng is one of the most important free agent signings that we have ever had in the history of the franchise," Riley said. "He is a proven All-Star and quintessential team player, both as a scorer, as well as an All-NBA defender. He brings the attitude of a warrior and competes every single night against the very, very best."Miami also announced the signing of small forward James Ennis, who has been one of the team,s summer-league standouts this year. Ennis was the 50th pick in the 2013 draft and spent last season playing in Australia.Wade is entering his 12th Heat season and is the franchise,s all-time leader in games, points, assists and steals. He and Haslem, who is also expected to complete a new two-year contract with Miami in the coming days, are the only players to appear on all three of the Heat teams that won NBA championships in 2006, 2012 and 2013.He was limited to 54 games last season, in large part because of a maintenance program to limit wear and tear on his knees. But when he was on the floor, he was effective – shooting a career best 54.5 percent and averaging 19.0 points. With James gone, Wade likely won,t have the luxury of resting as much this season. He,s averaged 24.3 points for his career, 16th-best in NBA history and fifth-best among active players with at least seven seasons. And only seven other players in league history have as many points (17,481), rebounds (3,605), assists (4,301), steals (1,262) and blocked shots (696) as Wade has posted so far in his career.Wade could have lobbied for more money or insisted on more years. But the Heat are positioning themselves to have as much flexibility as possible in 2016, a similar approach to what brought the "Big 3" together in 2010, and Wade,s deal helps them greatly in that regard.Wade still has a hectic summer ahead. There,s an upcoming marriage to actress Gabrielle Union, the ongoing building projects at the home he,s been remodeling for some time, and the annual fantasy camp that he hosts. His biggest order of business, however, is now complete.
