Téma: Jak postupovat / Encarnacions three- NEW YORK — Yankees manager Joe Girardi was filling out his pitchers card for the week on Tuesday when it hit him: There would be no Mo. The man at the top of the list now is David Robertson. “Not to write Mos name on the top, because I do it in a certain order, was really strange for me,” Girardi said after the Yankees 5-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. “So that was kind of like, OK, hes not coming out of the bullpen. I can look at my card as much as I want, and hes not there. I think writing out that card probably made me realize that its different now.” Metallicas “Enter Sandman” has been replaced by Lynyrd Skynyrds “Sweet Home Alabama,” and Robertson wasnt quite as smooth Mariano Rivera, the career saves leader. The results were the same, though. Robertson struck out Carlos Pena with the bases loaded to end a rocky ninth inning in his first save chance since Riveras season-ending knee injury, helping the Yankees end a seven-game skid against the Rays. “Tonight I was thinking, Geez, better not blow your first one,” Robertson said. “Better not blow your first opportunity or Mo might come in here and smack me around.” Raul Ibanez homered twice, Curtis Granderson also connected and the Yankees handed James Shields (5-1) his first loss in seven starts this season. Ivan Nova (4-1) rebounded nicely after snapping his 15-game winning streak, pitching seven sharp innings, the last three in a steady rain. He gave up six hits and struck out eight. His effort comes on the day New York learned Andy Pettitte will be activated Sunday to make his first start since retiring after the 2010 season — meaning one pitcher will lose a spot in the rotation. The Yankees began the season with three straight losses to Tampa Bay in Florida and last beat the AL East-leading Rays on Sept. 21. It was their longest losing streak all-time against the Rays. Rafael Soriano moved up to the eighth-inning spot in the Yankees reorganized bullpen and immediately gave up a triple to Ben Zobrist. Zobrist scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-3 but Soriano struck out the side. Mark Teixeira had an RBI double in the eighth to give Robertson a two-run lead. Robertson ran in from the Yankees bullpen during the mid-inning announcements. His song began playing just before he reached the mound and the small percentage of the crowd of 37,086 still remaining gave him a warm ovation. Robertson, born in Birmingham, Ala., retired Jeff Keppinger on a grounder to second base to end his streak of eight straight strikeouts before walking Will Rhymes and Sean Rodriguez singled. He struck out pinch-hitter Brandon Allen then walked Zobrist to load the bases. After the called third strike secured his fourth career save and first this season, Robertson threw his hands up over his head then got a quick hug from catcher Russell Martin. Then he joined the Yankees usual handshake line near second base. “That was relief,” Robertson said of throwing his hands over his head. “Geez. Finally got out of it.” Roberston has held opponents to a .159 average (7 for 44) — 26 strikeouts — with the bases loaded in the regular season. “I think Mo wouldve thrown 12 pitches and broke a bat and we would have been out of here 20 minutes ago,” Robertson said. Robertson might have gotten the save but Nick Swisher made the opportunity possible in the seventh with two strong throws from right field. First he forced Keppinger, running from first, to stop at third on Rhymes double into the corner. Then he held Keppinger, who was playing for the injured Evan Longoria, at third with an accurate throw home on Rodriguezs fly ball. Nova finished the seventh by pounding his glove after striking out Jose Molina. “Its just like at Fenway. With the short field in right, the relay throw doesnt have to be long,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “I thought he would have been out if he went, whether Swisher hit the cutoff or not.” Nova gave up a leadoff single to Zobrist then retired 14 straight before the rain started to fall and he appeared to lose his grip on the ball, giving up two straight singles. Nova bounced back by striking out Rodriguez on a full count. Molina homered leading off the sixth and Luke Scott hit a one-out home run in the seventh for Tampa Bay, which had its only day off in a 30-day stretch Monday. Ibanez hit a long drive to right field in the fourth for just his second hit — both homers — in 16 at-bats against Shields. Granderson then ended a long drought of his own against the Rays ace, snapping an 0-for-18 slump with a soaring fly to right that landed just a few rows beyond the short fence. “A couple of changeups that any place else is an out,” Molina said about the two pitches Shields threw on the homers. Ibanez then ripped a drive off the right-field pole against reliever Burke Badenhop leading off the seventh to make it 4-2. It was his 15th career multihomer game. “Just trying not to do too much,” Ibanez said. “Put an easy swing on the ball.” Shields gave up three runs and four hits in six innings. He gave up six runs to the Yankees on opening day but did not get a decision when Rivera blew the save. Notes: Rays SS Desmond Jennings (left knee) says he should be able to start in the field in a day or two. He will wear a brace on the knee. … Yankees OF Brett Gardner played in left field for Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes/Barre in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday night as part of his rehabilitation for a strained right elbow. Téma: Jak postupovat / k Bajkov, Dawson Leedahl Christine Sinclair has witnessed many highs and lows over the last 10 years with the Canadian womens soccer team, but through it all her reliably excellent play has been the teams backbone. That consistency was rewarded Friday when Sinclair was named Canadian womens soccer player of the year for the 10th straight time, and 11th overall. Her latest accolade came a day after the 30-year-old forward from Burnaby, B.C., marked her 200th appearance for Canada and scored her 147th career international goal in a 2-0 win over Scotland. “Internationally Ive been a part of this team for a while and been through many ups and downs, and three coaches, but its clear to see the program is progressing,” Sinclair said Friday on a conference call from Brazil, where Canada is participating in the Torneio Internacional de Futebol Feminino. “I think both technically and tactically, the support from the federation, everything seems to be going in the right direction building towards 2015,” she added. The national womens program is in a good place heading into 2015, when Canada will host the FIFA Womens World Cup. Canada won its first ever Pan Am Games gold medal in 2011, then made its mark on the nations sports landscape with a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. “Very few people get an opportunity to actually play in a World Cup at home, but I think we have a shot at doing very well,” Sinclair said. “Everything were doing is building toward that and trying to prove to everyone that what happened in London isnt a one-off thing and that its sustainable. That Canada is a forced to be reckoned within the international scene.” Sinclair called her international experience this year “interesting.” She missed Canadas first four international games due to a suspension stemming from an altercation with an official after Canadas semifinal loss to the U.S. at the London Games. She also said that Canada is currently in a building phase and developing younger players for the main squad, which has meant results have been muted following an explosive 2012. But on the club level, Sinclair had a season to remember. She led the Portland Thorns to the NWSL championship with eight goals in 20 matches. It marked her third straight club title, having won in 2010 with FC Gold Pride and 2011 with the Western New York Flash. “I have many ties to the Portland area having gone to university there,” she said. “Its a soccer-crazy city, and being able to reward those fans and that organization with a championship, it just meant so much to me to be able to give that to the city.” Sinclair added that as big as international womens soccer is getting, a healthy domestic league will do a lot to help to grow the game. “For me its all about doing everything I can to help the NWSL survive,” she said. "Its my goal to have this league around for years to come, so that nine- and 10-year-olds now have a place to play when theyre done with university and a place to dream of playing. “Very few people make national teams, but it doesnt mean that once youre done your university or youth club career that your soccer career should be over.” Sinclair made the 10-player shortlist for the 2013 FIFA Womens World Player of the Year award and was honoured on Canadas Walk of Fame. Sinclair first won the Canadian award in 2000 and has made it her own since 2004. Six men have won the male half of the award since then. A lot has happened since her first award, from the highs of playing in the 2002 under-19 World Cup final in front of a big crowd at Edmontons Commonwealth Stadium, to the lows of finishing in last place at the 2011 World Cup in Germany. “I remember back to 2002 with the under-19 world championship and there being almost 50,000 fans at the final and thinking All right, womens soccer has arrived in this country,” she said. “And then we went through a little bit of a lull. As a national team we didnt perform as well as we would have hoped to, and you didnt see the huge increases in attendance. But obviously what happened in London has blown everyones expectations out of the water.” Sinclair said the benefits of winning an Olympic medal go right down to soccers youth level. “Just little kids who recognize all of us, because when I was that age I had no idea there was even a national team,” she said. “Now these kids have female athletes as role models and they dream of being the next Erin McLeod (Canadas goalkeeper), that never happened 15 years ago.” Midfielder Diana Matheson was runner-up for the Canadian soccer award, followed by McLeod and midfielder Desiree Scott. The award is voted on by Canadian media, coaches and clubs. Portland Timbers captain Will Johnson was named male player of the year on Thursday. Dylan Carreiro and Kadeisha Buchanan were earlier named under-20 players of the year. Marco Carducci and Sura Yekka took under-17 honours while Liam Stanley was named Para Player of the Year. Téma: Jak postupovat / ponline.com/Youth-Eric-Dickerson- PHILADELPHIA — The San Jose Sharks made a simple change to rally for a comeback victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. They started shooting the puck. Joe Pavelski had a hat trick to move into a tie for second in the NHL in goals and the Sharks beat Philadelphia 7-3 Thursday night in the first game for both teams following the Olympic break. Raffi Torres and Logan Couture each scored twice in their return to San Joses lineup following injuries. The Sharks trailed 2-1 after getting outshot 10-4 in the first period. San Jose made a pointed effort to shoot the puck in the second period and it paid off in a big way, resulting in five second-period goals on 16 shots. “We started to finally shoot the puck,” Couture said. “The first period we werent shooting. We were playing in their end, but we werent shooting. Thats more the way we play, the way we need to play. A lot of our goals were off rebounds, and thats the way you score in this league.” Pavelski, one of the Sharks four Olympians, scored all three of his goals in the dominating second period. Torres, who was making his 2013-14 debut after injuring his knee in the preseason, capped the second-period spree with his second goal of the game with 2.2 seconds left. Couture, who missed the previous 16 games due to hand surgery, netted his 15th goal of the season in the period. “We didnt have a lot of purpose in our game in the first period, especially in their zone,” Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. “Kind of skating around waiting for something to happen. We got our forecheck going in the second (and) a lot more pucks to the goaltender, which created second and third chances. We had to start thinking about throwing the puck from bad angles and creating second (chances) that way.” Andrej Meszaros had a highlight-reel tally and Matt Read and Brayden Schenn also scored for the Flyers, who had won four straight before the Olympic break. Flyers coach Craig Berube wasnt pleased with his teams effort, particularly the play in front of their own goal. “Not competing around our net, thats basically what it boils down to,” Berube said. "Not getting sticks, not boxing people out, not being hard on people. We didnt compete hard enough to win the hockey game. Nobody. “Were all embarrassed tonight.” The Flyers netted a pair of goals within a 22-second span midway through the first period to take a 2-1 lead. Meszaros, one of five Flyers who participated in the Olympics, opened the Philadelphia scoring with 9:24 remaining in the opening period. Alex Stalock, San Joses backup goalie who started in place of Olympian Antti Niemi, saved Meszaros initial shot from the point, but Steve Downie pushed the rebound to Meszaros, who shot the puck between his own legs and past Stalock from close range. Schenn put Philadelphia ahead 2-1 when he backhanded the puck from behind the net off the skate of Jason Demers and past Stalock with 9:02 remaining in the first period. But it was all San Jose in the second period. Pavelski scored from close range on the power play 4:23 into the period and then gave San Jose the lead for good with 9:48 remaining in the period when he deflected Marc-Edouard Vlasics shot from the point past Steve Mason that made it 3-2. Mason was lifted 35 seconds later when Couture tallied on a rebound after the Flyers goalie dropped a shot that he initially gloved. Mason gave up four goals on his first 13 shots. His replacement, Ray Emery, didnt fare much better, as Pavelski scored on a turnaround from in front of the crease with 5:50 left in the period for his 32nd goal of the season, tying him with Torontos Phil Kessel for second-most in the league. Torres finished the second-period scoring by just beating the intermission buzzer with a close-range goal. “We had some good luck throughout the team,” Pavelski said. “They were just going in tonight. Life is good. Hopefully they keep coming.” The sellout crowd loudly booed the Flyers as they exited the ice following the period. “We lost a lot of battles the last two-thirds of the game,” Philadelphias Scott Hartnell said. “Simple penalties, turnovers that led to odd-man rushes and we were soft in front of our net. Thats what you get when you dont play tough, you dont play strong and you dont play good defence. It couldve been 10-3.” It didnt get any better in the third period for Philadelphia as Couture netted a short-handed goal 4:50 in on a backhander in front of Emery. In a rare move, Emery was lifted and Mason was re-inserted into the game with 9:11 left in the third period. Emery requested to be removed from the game due to an undisclosed injury that neither he nor Berube would identify. Besides Meszaros, Flyers Michael Raffi, Jakub Voracek, Kimmo Timonen and Mark Streit also participated in the Olympics. Timonen, who helped Finland to the bronze medal, was a healthy scratch to allow him to rest. In addition to Niemi and Pavelski, San Joses Patrick Marleau and Vlasic competed in Sochi. Niemi, who entered second in the NHL in wins (29), didnt see any action Thursday. Demers, Andrew Desjardins and Marleau each had a pair of assists for the Sharks. NOTES: Before the Olympics, Niemi was 7-3 with a 2.12 GAA in his previous 10 starts. However, one of those losses was a 5-2 home defeat to the Flyers on Feb. 3, a game in which he gave up four goals before being pulled. … San Jose won its sixth straight game in Philadelphia. The Flyers last home win over the Sharks came on Dec. 21, 2000. … San Jose came within two of its season-high for goals, set in a 9-2 win over the Rangers on Oct. 8. … The seven goals allowed matched a season-worst for Philadelphia, which lost 7-0 to Washington on Nov. 1 and 7-2 at Chicago on Dec. 11. Téma: Jak postupovat / /www.thefaclonsshoponli HOYLAKE, England — Even after his worst 72-hole finish in a major, Tiger Woods says he would pick himself for the Ryder Cup team. His first major of the year, and second tournament since March 31 back surgery, wasnt much of an audition for U.S. captain Tom Watson. Woods was never the same after opening the British Open with a 69. The mistakes kept piling up, and so did the big numbers, and he closed with a 3-over 75 on Sunday at Royal Liverpool. “I just made too many mistakes,” Woods said. He finished at 6-over 294, matching his highest score in the British Open. Only three players had a worse score, including U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer, and Woods finished in 69th place. His previous worst was a tie for 40th in the PGA Championship last year and the 2012 Masters. Worse yet, he didnt even beat the 64-year-old captain. Watson birdied his last hole for a 68, “Its just one day. Its a snapshot,” Watson said. “Its not a big deal.” Still, the concern was clear. Watson was speaking to the media as Woods was still on the course when he asked if Woods was shooting under par. Told that he was 4 over at the time, Watson said, “Thats not very good.” Woods still has two tournaments left before the end of Ryder Cup qualifying at the PGA Championship. He is No. 72 in the standings, and aside from winning the final major of the year, his best bet is to be one of Watsons three picks. Asked if he would be inclined to pick him if were in Watsons position, Woods said with a smile, “I would say yes.” “But thats my position, my take on it,” Woods said. “Hes the captain. Obviously, its his decision. Hes going to field the best 12 players that he thinks will win the cup back. And I hope Im on that team.” Woods is unlikely to make the FedEx Cup playoffs unless he picked up top-3 finishes at Firestone and the PGA Championship, and that means Watson would have to judge him on those tournaments unless Woods were to play elsewhere. Europe isnt appealing, with events in Denmark, the Czech Republic and Italy. “It would make it tougher for me to pick him if hes not playing,” Watson said. Watson is more inclined to see more from Woods before a rush to judgment. Woods has played only six rounds since back surgery to alleviate a pinched nerve that forced him to miss three months, including two majors. The scorecard showed two triple bogeys and three double bogeys. He said his return at Congressional three weeks ago, where he missed the cut by four shots, was at least a chance to make sure he was pain free and shake off some rust. The rust was still there “I was certainly expecting it, yes, but I just thought that I know how to play links golf,” Woods said. “I know how to grind it on these golf courses, and hitting the shots I thought I could get around here. I did the first day. After a bad start I got it back. And unfortunately, as I said, I made too many mistakes with the doubles and triples.” He said he remained encouraged — the same word he used when missing the cut at Congressional |

Téma: Jak postupovat / aid off but Alex Telles return pa LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike DAntoni resigned Wednesday after less than two seasons on the job. Team spokesman John Black confirmed DAntonis resignation, ending the brief tenure of the Lakers fourth head coach in less than three years. DAntoni went 67-87 after taking over the Lakers early in the 2012-13 season. He replaced the fired Mike Brown, who lasted just 71 games after replacing 11-time NBA champion coach Phil Jackson in 2011. The injury-plagued Lakers were 27-55 this season, their worst campaign in more than 50 years and the second-worst winning percentage in franchise history. With Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Pau Gasol sitting out large chunks of the season while the Lakers lost an NBA-worst 319 man-games to injuries, the 16-time NBA champion franchise missed the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons and only the third time in 38 years. “Given the circumstances, I dont know that anybody could have done a better job than Mike did the past two seasons,” Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said. “On behalf of the Lakers, we thank Mike for the work ethic, professionalism and positive attitude that he brought to the team every day. We wish him the best of luck.” The 62-year-old DAntoni had one year left on his contract, but wanted the Lakers to pick up his option year for 2015-16 to have any chance of success. The Lakers apparently refused, leading to DAntonis resignation. DAntoni walked away from a $4 million payday for next season, although he may receive a portion of that money as severance. A phone message left for DAntoni wasnt immediately returned. Despite the Lakers injuries on a roster consisting mostly of players on one-year contracts, Los Angeles fans largely directed their anger during a rare down season toward DAntoni. Lakers great Magic Johnson, who was sharply critical of DAntonis coaching style, hailed the news on his Twitter account. “Happy days are here again!” Johnson tweeted. “Mike DAntoni resigns as the Lakers coach. I couldnt be happier!” DAntoni also has coached the Nuggets, Suns and Knicks. He reached two Western Conference finals with Nash in Phoenix before having much less success in New York. “Whenever a coach isnt there anymore, for whatever reason, all of us in the fraternity feel badly,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said after the Spurs playoff victory over Dallas. “He is a heck of a coach and heck of a guy. You always feel badly when something like that happens. I just hope that what he wants is going to be what happens for him. He is a special guy.” DAntonis signature up-tempo style of play seemed an odd match from the start with the aging, ball-dominating Bryant and the Lakers, who ran Jacksons deliberate triangle offence to perfection. Lakers owners Jerry and Jim Buss curiously chose DAntoni to replace Brown over Jackson, who strongly contemplated a return for a third stint on the Los Angeles bench. Jackson became the president of the Knicks in March. Kupchak said he will begin the search immediately for the Lakers fifth head coach since 2011 — including Jackson, who walked away from the team after falling short of a third consecutive championship. DAntonis departure will allow the Lakers franchise overhaul to begin in earnest after their worst season since 1957-58 back in Minneapolis. Los Angeles missed the post-season for just the second time in the 17-season career of Bryant, who occasionally clashed with DAntoni. The Lakers have a top-10 pick in a strong draft and just three players under contract for next season, including Nash and Bryant. The fourth-leading scorer in NBA history will make more than $48 million over the next two years. A coaching change also might make the Lakers more attractive to Gasol, an unrestricted free agent who intimated he wouldnt consider returning if DAntoni still coached the team. Kupchak has said the Lakers are very interested in re-signing the 7-foot Spaniard, one of the top available free agents. “There would have to be significant changes,” Gasol wrote in Spanish on his personal blog recently. “Ive never concealed the fact that DAntonis style doesnt suit my game. Everybody knows this. I dont know if my decision will be swayed by whether Mike stays or leaves. Obviously, the coach is a very important factor for any team.” After joining the Lakers on short notice last season, DAntoni was unable to assemble a contending team immediately around Bryant and Dwight Howard, who struggled to embrace the pick-and-roll game so important to DAntonis offence. Los Angeles won 45 games last season despite its awful start under Brown. But the Lakers lost Bryant to a torn Achilles tendon late in the regular season before getting swept out of the first round by San Antonio. Howard left the Lakers as a free agent last summer, fleeing to Houston for less money to escape the Lakers drama and high expectations. Bryant played in just six games this season after breaking a bone near his knee in December, and Los Angeles never had a consistently competitive team in his absence. Nash also missed most of the season with various injuries, but the 40-year-old point guard hopes to play again next season. DAntoni realized he would take the blame for the Lakers woes this season, and the veteran coach seemed comfortable with the prospect when the team packed up for the summer. “Every coach should be under scrutiny,” DAntoni said two weeks ago. “Some coaches get fired even after the best years theyve ever had. … Theres always things we could have done better, and its easier with hindsight. Things dont always go smoothly. For the most part, our guys were very competitive. For us, there are some silver linings in there, but in hindsight, its disappointing for everybody.” . LONDON — Samuel Etoo and Gary Cahill scored first half goals as Chelsea turned in a dominant performance to beat Galatasaray 2-0 on Tuesday and reach the Champions League quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory on aggregate. Galatasarays former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba made no impact on his return to Stamford Bridge, being reduced to a minor role like the rest of his teammates in the second leg match of the last 16. Playing his first game at Chelsea since his last kick for the Blues won a penalty shootout with Bayern Munich in the final two years ago, Drogba received a warm welcome from the home fans. But Etoo quickly stole the spotlight, opening the scoring from a tight angle in the fourth minute. Cahill doubled the lead from close range in the 42nd. In the nights other match, Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid beat Schalke 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu to reach the quarterfinals with a 9-2 rout on aggregate. Drogba looked a shadow of his former self and did not have a single clear-cut chance. But both his manager Roberto Mancini and his former coach Jose Mourinho jumped to his defence. “It was not his fault, it was very difficult for him because we did not play tonight,” Mancini said. Mourinho said his former protege was not helped by his teammates after they failed to produce attacking football. “We were very solid and very confident, we controlled the game,” Mourinho said. “If youre a striker and your team doesnt attack, you feel a lonely man.” All eyes were on Drogba as he entered the pitch to start his warm-up at a nearly empty stadium. The Ivory Coast forward did not change his usual routine, touching the grass and crossing himself before joining his teammates. After being lured from Marseille by Mourinho, Drogba scored 157 goals in 341 appearances for the London club between 2004-12 and was voted the greatest player in the clubs history. As teams entered the pitch before kickoff, Drogba pointed a finger towards the Chelsea kop where a banner reading “Drogba Legend” had been unfurled. He then ran to the touchline to give a handshake and a kiss to Mourinho. Though the spotlight was on Drogba, Etoo soon gave Chelsea a perfect start to the game. Eden Hazard linked up well with Oscar to release the ball for the Cameroon striker, who fired past goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Wesley Sneijder strugggled to build any attacks from midfield for the visitors, while Etoo created further danger from the right flank before his attempted cut-back was blocked by defenders.dddddddddddd Drogba then tried his luck from the edge of the box but his acrobatic volley ended well over the bar in a moment that summed up his return to his former club. Toying with defenders with his usual frenzied pace and dribbles, Hazard produced another stellar performance for Chelsea. The Belgium playmaker was behind nearly all his sides attacks and his relentless efforts made it a tiring night for the Galatasaray defence. Hazard and Oscar exchanged a series of one-twos in the 22nd minute before the Belgium international crossed for Lampard, who missed his attempt and sent the ball over. Hazard took a shot from distance two minutes later but his effort was stopped by Muslera. Chelsea went closer in the 33rd minute when captain John Terrys superb left-footed volley from Lampards free kick flew over the bar with Muslera looking beaten. Another fast move between Hazard and Oscar almost paid off but Alex Telles return pass prevented Willian from doubling the lead. Chelseas tenacity was finally rewarded before the interval when Cahill scored from the rebound with a powerful finish after Muslera had parried away Terrys header from a corner. Hazard continued to torment Galatasarays defence in the second half. In the 49th, he went on a diagonal run across the pitch and evaded Semih Kaya before releasing the ball for Etoo — but Oscars shot from the strikers cross was blocked by Melo. Though Galatasaray pushed forward in search of a goal, Chelsea comfortably kept the visitors at bay while being dangerous on the break until the final whistle. Drogba left the pitch to a standing ovation as Chelsea fans chanted his name. Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard was delighted with sides performance in west London. “It was everything we wanted it to be. We knew it was going to be a tough game and they hardly threatened,” Lampard said. “It was a very controlled, very professional performance from all of us,” said After Manchester City and Arsenal exited the competition last week, Manchester United will try to join Chelsea in the last eight when it hosts Olympiakos on Wednesday. However, David Moyes team needs to overhaul a 2-0 loss in the first leg to advance. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / s Vegas starter Bre The Oscar Pistorius trial has resumed following a month long break. During that time, Pistorius underwent a psychiatric evaluation at the direction of the court to determine if he suffered from general anxiety disorder (GAD) at the time he killed Reeva Steenkamp. The Charges The issue being determined at trial is whether Pistorius killed Steenkamp intentionally, or as Pistorius alleges, he killed her by accident believing her to be an intruder. Form a legal standpoint, this distinction is really important since it ties into the charges faced by Pistorius. There are three possible scenarios with respect to the charges: Premeditated murder, murder and culpable homicide. Premeditated murder requires an intent to murder plus planning the murder. Premeditation is reserved for more robust planning and generally doesnt capture an intent that materialized right before a crime was committed. There was no significant planning to the crime, so premeditated murder will likely fail. Even if the prosecution cant make out premeditated murder, it can still get Pistorius on the lesser charge of murder. In order establish murder, they only need to show that he intended to kill Steenkamp (no planning element needed).Should the prosecution fail on murder, there is another lesser charge that could come into play: culpable homicide. This charge means that Pistorius negligently killed Steenkamp (or that he killed her by accident). Premeditated murder would get Pistorius a compulsory life sentence, while murder would result in a compulsory sentence of 15 years. For culpable homicide, the sentencing is discretionary (varies from fines to prison time), although its not unusual to see prison time in South Africa of 5-10 years for this type of crime. Facing very serious charges, the defence team wanted to establish that Pistorius should not go to jail because he was mentally ill when he fired those four gunshots the night of Valentines Day. And thats where GAD comes into play. General Anxiety Disorder And Diminished Capacity A defendant that suffers from a mental disorder can be found not criminally responsible on the basis that he or she could not appreciate the difference between right and wrong at the time the crime was committed. If such a finding is made, one possible outcome is the trial ends right then and there, and the defendant is committed to an institution indefinitely. In essence, it would look very much like an acquittal with ongoing psychiatric care. So if it was concluded that Pistorius had a mental disorder that made him incapable of appreciating the wrongfulness of his act, the trial could have come to a very abrupt end and Pistorius could have avoided jail time. Psychiatric Finding The psychiatric report concluded that Pistorius was not mentally ill at the time he killed Steenkamp. As per the report, “at the time of the alleged offenses, the accused did not suffer from a mental disorder or mental defect that affected his ability to distinguish between the rightful or wrongful nature of his deeds”. So that means the trial continues and Pistorius does not avoid prison in favour of an institution. Mental Illness No. 2: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Things didnt end with GAD. On July 2, the defence team declared that Pistorius was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and as result was suicidal. “He is…mourning the loss of Ms Steenkamp,” said Barry Roux, Pistorius lawyer. “Should he not receive proper clinical care, his condition is likely to worsen and increase the risks for suicide.” Is this a meaningful finding with respect to exonerating Pistorius? No. This mental disorder speaks to Pistorius state of mind AFTER the murder and not before or during the act. The key is in the name of the affliction: POST-traumatic stress disorder and not PRE-traumatic stress disorder. So that means that even if it can be shown that Pistorius suffers from PTSD, his mental illness did not render him unable to appreciate the difference between right and wrong at the time of the killing since he would have only developed the illness after the crime. Accordingly, as far as being a defence to the core issue in this trial, namely that Pistorius did not intend to kill Steenkamp, its irrelevant and of no import. However, the defence team may have raised PTSD as further evidence that Pistorius did not intend to kill Steenkamp. The defence team would argue that Pistorius is distraught to the point of being suicidal because he never intended to kill Steenkamp. If he did intend to kill Steenkamp, he would not be suicidal. Of course, this argument is vulnerable to attack. Pistorius intending to kill Steenkamp is not incompatible with feeling profound remorse and guilt after the fact. Indeed, it could be argued that experiencing feelings of anguish and accountability after intentionally killing someone is not unusual in this type of circumstance. The defence team also raised PTSD so they could rely on it as a possible mitigating factor to reduce his prison time come sentencing. The idea would be that he would need ongoing psychiatric care, which could only be adequately provided in an institution outside of prison. Next Steps Once the defence has called all its witnesses, it will close its case. That should within the next week or so. After that, both parties will present their closing arguments with a view to persuading the court of their respective positions. Once closing arguments wrap up, the Court will schedule a date to announce the verdict. Following the determination of guilt, a sentencing hearing will be held where both sides will present arguments with respect to the appropriate sentence. Thereafter, Judge Masipa will hand down her sentence. At the rate the trial is proceeding, expect it to conclude sometime in mid-summer. Pistorius claims lack believability and veracity. Given the number of improbabilities in his story (as discussed here), it would not be a surprise to see Pistorius convicted of murder. On Friday in Philadelphias opener, Davis threw a two-hitter and struck out eight in a 4-0 victory over Nashville, Tennessee. In the sixth inning against Pearland, Zion Spearman scored the winning run on shortstop Matt Adams two-out throwing error to first base. Scott Bandura reached on a bunt leading off the inning. Two outs later, Spearman tied it with a line-drive triple into the left-centre gap. “We had a feeling,” Philadelphia manager Alex Rice said. “I feel badly for the young man who threw wide. … We just felt good. There was no one who didnt think we were coming back.” Pearland (1-1) had a four-run fifth to take a 6-3 lead. Cole Smajstrla hit a three-run home run and Layne Roblyer, who homered earlier, had an RBI single. Spearman and Kai Cummings drove in runs in the bottom of the inning to cut it to 6-5. Philadelphia will play Las Vegas on Wednesday night, with Davis expected to pitch again. Las Vegas also improved to 2-0 on Sunday, routing Chicago 13-2 in four innings. Zach Hare and Dominic Clayton also homered. Las Vegas starter Brennan Holligan limited Chicago to two hits and struck out six. Chicagos Pierce Jones, who hit three home runs Thursday against Lynnwood, was 0 for 2 with a walk. “Ive got some things to cheer them up,” Chicago manager Darold Butler said. “I kind of let them do what they want to do. … I just let them be 12-year-old kids and have fun.” SOUTH KOREA 8, PUERTO RICO 5 Jun Hyeok Yun stole home in the top of the sixth for the go-ahead run for Seoul. Téma: Jak postupovat / was no real stressful i CHICAGO — It started with a pregame video and ran all the way through the final out and a high-five line for the New York Yankees. This was the Derek Jeter show, and it was quite a performance for the shortstops farewell tour. Jeter had four hits and Masahiro Tanaka rebounded nicely from his first major league loss, leading the Yankees to a 7-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. “I just want to try to help us win. Thats it,” Jeter said. “Our job is, if theres a guy on second base and Ive got to hit a ground ball to second to move him over, Ill do it. I dont think about personal statistics. I think about trying to help us win.” He certainly played a key role as the Yankees closed out an extended stay in Chicago with a pair of wins against the White Sox. Brett Gardner had a big two-run single in New Yorks four-run second inning, and Brian Roberts added a solo homer in the eighth in his return to the lineup after missing a game with a sore right knee. “Everyone contributed today,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Tanaka (7-1) pitched into the seventh inning as New York improved to 3-3 on its unusual nine-game trip to Chicago and St. Louis. The Yankees split two games against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, and then had another split in their four-game set on Chicagos South Side. Conor Gillaspie had two hits and drove in a run for the White Sox, who had won eight consecutive home games against New York before Saturdays 4-3 loss in 10 innings. Gillaspie is batting .364 (20 for 55) in his past 15 games. Andre Rienzo (4-1) struck out seven in five innings, but allowed four earned runs and seven hits. “It seemed all day he was working from behind,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “He wasnt getting ahead. He just wasnt as sharp as hes been in previous outings — and it cost him.” Jeter once again heard loud cheers throughout the day in what likely was his final game in Chicago. The 13-time All-Star plans to retire after the season. “Its one of my favourite cities, and the way the fans have treated me these two series here, its been tremendous,” Jeter said. “Its something Ill always remember.” The White Sox showed a video highlighting Jeters background before the game and presented the 39-year-old shortstop with three gifts: a baseball-themed bench made by former White Sox and Yankees player Ron Kittle, enclosed infield clay from the shortstop area at U.S. Cellular Field and a $5,000 donation to Jeters Turn 2 Foundation. Jeter waved to the sellout crowd of 39,142 after he received the gifts from White Sox slugger Paul Konerko, who also plans to retire after the season. He also acknowledged the home dugout, where the White Sox applauded the pregame ceremony from the top step. Once the game started, it was all business for the captain. Jeter drove in Roberts with his second single in the second. He tripled past diving centre fielder Adam Eaton in the fourth and scored on Rienzos wild pitch, and then added another run-scoring single in the sixth. “Man. Hes good,” Rienzo said. “The first one is cutter, the second one is inside, and the third is cutter, too. Hes a winner. I hope I would win, but its OK.” The crowd gave Jeter a standing ovation when he batted for the last time in the eighth, and then applauded again when he struck out swinging to end the inning. It was Jeters first four-hit game since a 9-6 loss at the White Sox on Aug. 20, 2012. New Yorks 10-hit attack was more than enough for Tanaka, who allowed one run and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. The Japanese right-hander struck out six and walked two in his 10th major league start. Tanaka was coming off a 6-1 loss to the lowly Cubs on Tuesday that ended his unbeaten streak at 42 regular-season starts. “I wanted the ball to go down and thats why I made some tweaks to my mechanics,” Tanaka said through a translator. Tanaka had been 34-0 in Japan and North America the last two seasons, though he did drop Game 6 of the Japan Series last year before earning the save in Game 7. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chris Tillman paid no attention to the Baltimore bullpen as it started to stir in the ninth inning. After all, he had made it this far before. There was no way he was leaving the game now. So after a leadoff single to start the inning, Tillman bore down against the Kansas City Royals. The young right-hander induced three straight groundouts to end the game, wrapping up a 4-0 victory for the Orioles and giving Tillman his first career shutout. “Ill take more of them,” he said, “but thats not my goal.” Maybe not. But it sure is nice. Tillman came within two outs of a nine-inning complete game earlier this season, and he was incensed when he was pulled from an eventual 3-1 win over Detroit. He hadnt been any happier of late, either, after scuffling through his last five outings. But behind a dastardly combination of curveballs, changeups and fastballs, Tillman (4-2) kept the offensively inept Royals off balance. He scattered five hits and a walk, his dominant outing coming one night after Wei-Yin Chen and four relievers combined to beat Kansas City 2-1. Chris Davis homered and Steve Clevenger also drove in a run for the Orioles. “This is Tillmans night,” the Royals Billy Butler said. “Youve got to give him credit. He did his job today. He was locating, throwing all of his pitches. He did a heck of a job.” Jeremy Guthrie (2-3) bounced back from a lousy start to last eight innings against his former team. The Royals starter allowed four runs, eight hits and a walk while striking out two. While falling to 0-3 with four no-decisions in his last seven starts, Guthrie at least was able to save a bullpen that had been chewed up in that close loss the previous night. “He threw the ball well. He really did,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. As for that offence, which has managed one run in the last two games? “Offences heat up, cool off,” Yost said. “Right now we dont have anybody where I can sit back and say this boy is really swinging thhe bat well right now.dddddddddddd” The game was played in a brisk 2 hours, 22 minutes, mostly because the starters were so effective. Tillman retired 13 of 14 batters after giving up a double to Norichika Aoki to start the game, and Guthrie only allowed a single by J.J. Hardy over the first three innings. Baltimore finally got to Guthrie in the fourth, and it was partly his own doing. Manny Machado led off by bunting back toward Guthrie, and he slipped while trying to field the ball. His hurried throw to first was wide of the bag for an error, and Machado trotted over to second base. Moments later, he headed for third when Guthrie threw a wild pitch. Davis walked to put runners on the corners for Cruz, whose single drove in the games first run. Clevenger then grounded into a fielders choice to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead. It remained that way until the sixth, when consecutive singles again put runners on the corners. Cruz then lofted a fly ball deep enough to centre to bring home Adam Jones. Davis added his third homer of the season with two outs in the eighth. By that point, the only drama was whether Tillman would finish the game. The Orioles had two relievers up in the bullpen in the ninth, and the Royals got the leadoff man on base. But Tillman calmly got the next three batters to ground out to end the game. “We talked to him between innings, like we always do. It was a lot of effort but there was no real stressful innings for him,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “We had guys up and there was a point he was coming out of the game, but he was not going to be denied.” NOTES: The Orioles recalled RHP Brad Brach from Triple-A Norfolk and designated RHP Evan Meek for assignment. … The Royals selected the contract of RHP Casey Coleman from Triple-A Omaha and designated OF Justin Maxwell for assignment. Coleman retired the side in the ninth. … Baltimore RHP Bud Norris is scheduled to start Saturday. LHP Danny Duffy will start for Kansas City. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / -- and people get inspire Injured Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos said hes feeling better after taking a day off from practice on Monday because his leg didnt feel right. Stamkos took to the ice at the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday morning – where the Lightning prepared to face the Toronto Maple Leafs – wearing a regular blue jersey and skated for about 20 minutes. “It felt a lot better today,” Stamkos said after the skate. “Just pain in certain areas. The bone is really strong, the x-rays look good – its more soft tissue issues.” Stamkos added that he still hopes to get games under his belt before the Olympic break and also discussed the possibility of playing in Sochi even if he doesnt play an NHL game first. “The objective is to play a game (in the NHL), that would be something I would really love to do,” he explained to the large scrum of reporters. “But if thats not the case, theres going to be another discussion about whether or not Im still going to be on that team if I cant play a game. Weve had brief discussions about that, its more or less been Well cross that bridge when (if) we need to.” Team Canada executive director Steve Yzerman just happens to be his NHL general manager in Tampa and Stamkos is prepared to have a discussion with him on all of his options. “If we have to sit down a couple of days before we have to leave for the Olympics, we can be honest with each other,” Stamkos said of his eventual chat with Yzerman. “If I say that Im at the level I think I need to be at to compete at the Olympics, I think hes going to have the trust in me that I can go over there and play at that level. But at the end of the day, I have to be honest with him. If I say Im not ready, obviously Im not going to go.” When asked about Stamkos comments that going to Sochi without playing an NHL game was a possibility, Yzerman confirmed its among the different options, again very much depending on where he is physically. “Were not going to rule anything out,” Yzerman told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun over on the phone Tuesday. "We dont really have to jump to any conclusions yet. Its one step at a time. A week ago he had the X-Ray at the 10-week mark and the doctors advised him to increase the intensity of his workouts on and off the ice and see how he responds to that. So thats what hes done for the last week. Hes still hopeful to play at some point next week but we dont know yet if thats realistic or not. “Once he gets home from the trip hell meet again with the doctors and see what they come up with at that point. But until hes cleared for a game, whether its prior to leaving or not, theres not much really to say, but were going to keep all the options open and make the appropriate decisions when the time comes.” Stamkos fractured the tibia in his right leg in a Nov. 11 game against the Boston Bruins and underwent surgery the following day. He had 14 goals and 23 points in 17 games before the injury. The Lightnings final game before the Olympic break is Saturday, Feb. 8 against the Detroit Red Wings. The Suns do not in any way condone his conduct, but we do support him as he works through this.” Tuckers Mercedes Benz was pulled over by a Scottsdale police officer, and the police report said his speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot and he nearly fell over during the sobriety test. The Suns were aware of the arrest when Tucker signed a three-year, $16.5 million contract in early July. Tucker wrote of how blessed he was and that he was grateful no one was hurt. He said the process of making life changes has begun “and will continue with the support of my family, friends and, of course, the amazing Phoenix Suns.” “I will not let you down,” his statement concluded. Patrice Bergeron started earning acclaim for his defensive game four seasons ago when he was a legitimate Selke Trophy candidate for the first time. It has taken longer for Bergeron to be appreciated as one of the best all-around players in the NHL. Maybe it started during the Boston Bruins 2011 Stanley Cup run or last years trip to the final, but after playing a major role in Team Canadas gold-medal performance at the Sochi Olympics, the 28-year-old is surely considered among hockeys elite centres. “I think what hes done is he opened a lot of peoples eyes,” Boston coach Claude Julien said. “I know at his first Olympics he didnt have, whether it was the opportunity, to do what he did. The last one I think people realized how good he is.” Statistically, Bergeron had just two assists in six games, but the Quebec City native shifted from a fourth-line centre role to right-wing alongside Sidney Crosby and never missed a beat. His nearly flawless play wasnt a revelation as much as it underscored his growth from the 2010 Games in Vancouver, where he was the 13th forward. In that tournament, as defenceman Chris Pronger told CBC Sports recently, Bergeron had a smaller role that was “probably a little unfair to him.” “Patrice would sit on the bench for long periods of time and then wed get a penalty and turn to him and say, OK, go out and kill it,” Pronger told CBC. “Thats a pretty tough, but important, job.” Its also an important job to play with Crosby, whose unique talent level and menatal acuity are often difficult to match. Bergeron said during the Olympics that the challenge is to be at his best when on Crosbys wing. “Its about trying to find him when hes open but also its getting open for yourself, not just trying to feed him,” Bergeron said of Crosby. “You give him the puck in your zone and he does his thing.” Bergeron said playing with not just Crosby but everyone on that deep, talented Team Canada made him better. “I think it helped me with the confidence being there, and the pace and the level of the game down there, it definitely helped me coming back here,” Bergeron said last week in Detroit before the Bruins finished off the Red Wings to set up a showdown with the Montreal Canadiens that begins Thursday. Sochi gave Bergeron an international showcase to show his stuff, but he has been a key cog for the Bruins for a number of years. He has played 70-plus games in eight of nine full NHL seasons since entering the league in 2003 and had 20 points in 23 games when Boston won the Cup in 2011. This season, though, he was downright dominant at times. With 62 points in 80 games, a league-best plus-38 rating and a 58.6 per centt success rate in the faceoff circle, Bergeron was the Bruins most important forward as they won the Presidents Trophy.dddddddddddd. “I didnt think a guy thats already played eight or nine years can get better each and every year, but he is,” winger Brad Marchand said in Toronto late in the regular season. “Hes the reason why weve won this many games this year and why we won the Cup. Hes a phenomenal player, a great leader, and every night hes on the ice hes a guy you want to follow.” At one time Bergeron was the player doing the following. Even though he was taught defensive responsibility while growing up in hockey, Bergeron looked to Ted Donato and others who were winning faceoffs and playing in their own end. Now a veteran on the verge of beginning his US$52-million, eight-year contract signed last summer, Bergeron is now in the position of instilling those principles in younger teammates. “I mean its how I play so Im always trying to talk about that, talk about making sure we come back on the backcheck and we do the right thing defensively to create some offence,” Bergeron said. Bergeron doesnt just help Bruins players. Red Wings centre Riley Sheahan, who was a key piece of their run to the playoffs, said he studies Bergerons game to improve his own. Even players at other positions appreciate what Bergeron brings to the ice. Detroit defenceman Brendan Smith has noticed Bergerons game even more now that brother Reilly is his teammate in Boston. “He reminds me of (Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg) because hes so good defensively, hes so good offensively,” Smith said. “Hes above the play. He makes good decisions. Hes a second quick. Hes strong on the puck. He makes good reads. You go through the list about a player like Bergeron.” Brendan Smith said Reilly has picked up plenty of tidbits from Bergeron, and according to Julien hes far from the only one who can say that. “Anybody that plays with him and sees his work ethic doesnt have a choice but to follow this guy,” Julien said. “That just makes those players better. If we see a player that has skill and some potential, we know playing with Bergie that the other parts of his game will improve. That certainly is something weve always looked at.” Forget about younger players. Even as Bergeron is a well-established pro, hes trying to tweak elements of his game that arent quite perfect. “Youre always trying to work on things,” Bergeron said. “Coaches are doing a great job of showing me some videos with my stick in the right position on the PK or whatnot. So I think you definitely improve every time you put some work into it.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ctly like the way Babcocks BIRMINGHAM, England — Ana Ivanovic captured her first grass court title after almost a decade of trying on Sunday after a straight sets win over Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova at the Aegon Classic. The former world number beat Zahlavova-Strycova, 6-3, 6-2, with her opponent also playing in her first major tournament final. Although Ivanovic started shakily for the second day in succession, and dropped serve immediately, she recovered quickly, her heavy ground strokes and willingness to attack soon dominating her unseeded opponent. It suggested that, at 26, not only can she adapt to a variable surface, but underlined this as her best year so far since 2008. It was Ivanovics 37th win and her third title of the year, putting her level with Serena Williams and Maria Sharapovas three. The Serb couldnt contain her happiness at conquering her doubts about playing on grass. “On grass you really dont have time to hesitate,” she said. “I tried to shorten my swing and move forwards. You really have to go after your shots. Its important to be clear in your mind.” Ivanovic will move up to world number 11, well positioned to make another move during Wimbledon, which would lift her back into the top ten for the first time in five years. If she needed an omen suggesting she might continue this streak into the grass court Grand Slam, which starts in eight days, it came with the holding her latest trophy – the Maud Watson Cup, the same one as that presented to the English woman after she won the first ever Wimbledon, in 1884. Could Ivanovic actually win the games oldest title? She was understandably cautious. “Its exciting and a new challenge,” she said, “just knowing that its never over and you always have a chance.” . Téma: Jak postupovat / most of his new job with the Port Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, In the final minute of the third period last night, it looked like the Kings may have had too many men on the ice during a line change – but there was no call. It was pretty close to overtime, so it might have made a huge difference in the outcome of the game. Did you see it? – Andrew R., Thornhill, ON Hi Andrew: Yes I did see the uncalled Kings too many men on the ice infraction with 21 seconds remaining in regulation time. Although there was no mention of the Kings violation of Rule 74 on either the NBC or CBC broadcasts you and I werent the only ones that caught it Andrew, as I received a tweet from Greg Williams (one of my followers on Twitter) questioning the play as well. For those that didnt observe it, let me share exactly what transpired. This too many men on the ice infraction committed by the Kings was as much of an “automatic call” as the one made a minute and three seconds earlier on Brian Boyle of the Rangers when he was penalized for a slash that broke the stick of Dwight King. There was great end-to-end action and scoring opportunities for both teams with under a minute to play in regulation time that were only thwarted through superb saves by Jonathan Quick on Carl Hagelin and Henrik Lunqvist on a Jeff Carter wraparound. After some sustained pressure by the Kings following the Carter scoring opportunity, the puck exited the Rangers zone and beyond the centre red line off the skate of Hagelin. As Alec Martinez went back to retrieve the puck on the penalty box side of the ice, Drew Doughty sauntered toward the Kings bench on the opposite side of the ice for a change following another energized shift by the potential Conn Smythe Trophy winner. With 22.7 seconds on the clock both Doughty and his replacement, Slava Voynov, were physically on the ice within five feet of the bench in what would determined as a legal line change as Martinez gained control of the puck midway between the red line and the Kings blue line. Two tenths of a second later (22.5) Martinez looked to his right and toward Voynov to throw a cross-ice pass. Voynov received the puck on his stick approximately 20 feet from his players bench at 20.9 seconds on the clock and with both of Doughtys skates clearly on the ice and preparing to climb over the boards. If we freeze frame it in this moment a clear violation of Rule 74.1 was committed requiring an immediate whistle and a bench minor assessed to the LA Kings for too many men on the ice. (Rule 74.1—If in the course of making a substitution, either the player entering the game or the player retiring from the ice surface plays the puck with his stick, skates or hands or who checks or makes any physical contact with an opposing player while either the player entering the game or the retiring player is actually on the ice, then the infraction of “too many men on the ice” will be called.) Both linesmen appeared to have had unobstructed views from their respective positions to follow the line change, up to and including the point when Voynov played the puck while Doughty was still physically on the ice. Even though this is primarily a linesmans call to make, one of the referees was positioned near the Kings bench inside the blue line and might very well have had a sightline on the change at the bench. This “automatic” call was not made and Voynov carried the puck through the neutral zone and led the attack. We cant be certain if a penalty call on this play would have changed the outcome of the game Andrew. What we can be certain of is that if a penalty had been called the teams would have played four-on-four until Brian Boyles penalty expired 24 seconds into overtime – at which point the Rangers would have enjoyed the benefit of a power-play for one minute and sixteen seconds. The rookie first-round draft pick was sent down to AHL Rochester on Saturday, before Buffalos 4-2 loss to Colorado. The Sabres made the move to free up a roster spot to activate fellow rookie defenceman Nikita Zadorov off injured reserve. . Johns IceCaps dominated the Portland Pirates 5-1 on Wednesday in American Hockey League play. INDIANAPOLIS — The shot came from NBA range, and if things play out as expected, Aaron Harrison and a lot of those Kentucky kids will be playing in that league soon enough. First, theyre heading to the Final Four — a trip to Big D courtesy of Harrisons unforgettable big shot. The 6-foot-6 forward made a 3-pointer from about 24 feet with 2.3 seconds left Sunday to lift the Wildcats and all those freshmen to a 75-72 win over Michigan and the programs 16th trip to the Final Four. He backpedaled slowly, almost expressionless, after ball hit twine. Teammates Dakari Johnson and Julius Randle chased him down. “Making that shot and seeing my teammates so happy and turning toward me, its the best feeling in the world,” Harrison said. Mississauga, Ont., native Nik Stauskas missed a desperation heave for Michigan at the buzzer and then, it was Harrisons turn on the bottom of a dog pile. Make that a puppy pile. Eighth-seeded Kentucky is the first all-freshman starting lineup to make the Final Four since the Fab Five at Michigan in 1992. The Wildcats (28-10) will play Wisconsin next Saturday outside of Dallas at AT&T Stadium. “They made a great shot,” said Stauskas, who led the second-seeded Wolverines with 24 points. “I thought we did a pretty good job contesting it. Its part of basketball.” The Wolverines (28-9) ended their season one win shy of a second straight Final Four. What a ride this has been for this group of Wildcats, an all-new collection of McDonalds All-Americans who were touted as the team that could go 40-0, then dismissed out of hand when the bad losses and bad basketball piled up in January and February. Coach John Calipari got things turned around by March, and for the second straight game in the Midwest Regional, Harrison made the shot that gave the Wildcats the lead for good. On Friday, he made the key 3 in Kentuckys 74-69 win over Louisville. This time, he took a handoff from his twin brother, Andrew, in the corner and dribbled three times to the top left of the arc. He was standing a good three feet behind the line when he elevated over Caris LeVert and took a bit of contact on the hand from the Michigan guard as he shot. No matter. The ball rattled in. Aaron Harrison scored 12 points off four 3-pointers over the last 8:05 and was Caliparis obvious choice to take the game-winner. “Ive been around guys who make thhese kind of plays,” Calipari said.dddddddddddd “Ive always said, You cannot be afraid to miss. Hes not afraid to miss. Thats the whole thing about making those kind of plays. And if he does miss, hes going to shoot it again.” It wasnt all Harrison, of course. While he was being shut down early, it was Marcus Lee — surprisingly — keeping the Wildcats in the game. Lee, another of the McDonalds All-American freshmen on Caliparis roster, had scored a total of nine points since the beginning of January, relegated to the bench after an early season illness. In this one, he got minutes that would have normally gone to the injured Willie Cauley-Stein, and finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Eight of those points came on put-back dunks that were part of Kentuckys 18 offensive rebounds. Harrisons first 3 gave Kentucky a 58-55 lead and was part of an 11-0 run that made it 62-55 with 6:30 left. The Wolverines fought back, and during a nine-possession stretch of sublime basketball the teams traded scores. The next stop gave the Wolverines the ball with about a minute left, trailing 72-70. Stauskas missed a layup and a 3-pointer, then Derrick Walton missed an open 3. But the fourth attempt went in with 31 seconds left and got credited to Jordan Morgan on a scramble under the basket, though it was Randles hand that tipped the ball in. Calipari called a timeout. Michigan burned a foul. And the endgame started with 10 seconds left. The ball went to Harrison and it was clear he was going to take the shot. “In that stage, that atmosphere, that game, to make that shot and send us to the Final Four, its just amazing. I was proud of him and it was shocking at the same time,” Randle said. Randle finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Hes a Dallas kid and will play in the sports biggest spectacle not far from home. If that doesnt feel like hitting the lottery, well, a few weeks later, he probably will. Randle is considered lottery pick material if he decides to go to the NBA, as expected. Others could join him in the Association, the latest group of one-and-done Wildcats that Calipari has put together. Theyll deal with that in 10 days or so. “Were going to go back and practice, go back and see if we can get better between now and the Final Four,” Calipari said. “These guys arent real happy about it, but we are.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / Chaussure Nike KD 7 Scott has high hopes for Lakers Byron Scott was a key component of the Los Angeles Lakers, Showtime teams, a smooth shooting guard with sizzling competitive fire. He believes his purple-and-gold championship pedigree makes him the ideal coach to return the struggling 16-time champions to NBA contention."This organization is all about championships, period," Scott said Tuesday at his introductory news conference. "We don,t look at Western Conference finals, Western Conference championships. We look at (NBA) championships. And we know we have some work ahead of us, but I,m excited. … I love challenges anyway, so this is going to be fun."Scott,s fellow Lakers greats are already backing that notion. Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jamaal Wilkes surprised Scott before he was formally named the 25th coach in franchise history, standing behind him in a towering show of support. In fact, Scott hadn,t even said a word before Magic took the microphone and praised his longtime backcourt mate."We wish we could put the uniform on for you and help you, but we will support you," Johnson said. "Congratulations to the Lakers organization. You chose the right guy."The Lakers, sparkling history Chaussure Nike KD 7 both the strength at Scott,s back and the specter looming over his shoulder. The Lakers are coming off their worst season in Los Angeles, and their hodgepodge roster is built around soon-to-be 36-year-old Kobe Bryant, who is coming off major injuries as the NBA,s highest-paid Chaussure Nike KD 7 Title contention seems distant to most pragmatic folks, particularly in the tough Western Conference. But don,t tell that to Magic, Kareem or even Scott, who has three championship rings."I don,t see this as a long process," Scott said. "This is Los Angeles. It,s still one of the best organizations in all of sports. Still got a ton of people that would love to play for this organization, and you,ve got (former Lakers) sitting in the front row that are very adamant about that. They,re all advocates for this organization, so I don,t think it,s going to take long."Scott and Bryant have stayed close since they played together in Bryant,s rookie season. Scott acknowledged Bryant "has to be a little patient," a quality that Kobe has never possessed in any measurable quantity. Scott floated the idea that Bryant could play point guard for the Lakers on occaision, also saying his club will run an offense that blends elements of the Princeton schemes, the triangle and other sets."I think the first thing you,ve got to do is get them thinking like we used to think," Scott said. "If you,re winning, it,s contagious. If you,re losing, it,s contagious. So you,ve got to change that mindset. … When you lose games, you shouldn,t be sitting in the locker room having a good time. It should hurt."The Lakers finally hired a new coach almost three months after Mike D,Antoni,s resignation on April 30. General manager Mitch Kupchak opened the news conference by thanking Scott for his patience: Los Angeles first interviewed Scott two months ago, but kept him waiting through the draft and the unsuccessful free-agent signing period."I think it was clear, at least it clear to us, that Byron was always our first choice," Kupchak said.Mike Brown and D,Antoni were respected veteran coaches with no Lakers connections, and neither lasted two full seasons. Johnson and his fellow Lakers greats took turns savaging D,Antoni,s coaching style on social media and television broadcasts, a treatment Scott is likely to avoid.Scott has been a head coach with New Jersey, New Orleans and Cleveland, but the Lakers have always been the ultimate for the Inglewood product who grew up sneaking into the Forum to watch Jerry West."This has been a dream of mine for so long," Scott said. "It,s a dream come true to be here today and to be introduced as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. The passion and the love that I have for this organization is second to none. The only thing that I regret is that Dr. Buss isn,t here today."According to Magic, late Lakers owner Jerry Buss wanted to hire Scott in 2010 when Phil Jackson was waffling on a return for a potential three-peat. Jackson stayed, and Scott took over the Cavaliers eight days before LeBron James left for Miami, consigning him to three losing seasons in Ohio while the Lakers job became a revolving door.Scott is grateful he finally got the chance to walk through it."You have a lot of people down on us right now," Scott said. Téma: Jak postupovat / Nike KD 5 Aunt Pearl Team USA squad down to 16 Paul George,s broken right leg has already created questions about the future of NBA players in international competitions. The U.S. national team can,t worry about that now. The Americans, immediate concerns are his health, and what they have to do to win without him.The Americans have 16 players left in their roster pool after cutting three Tuesday – and 25 days to determine which of them Nike KD 5 Aunt Pearl fill the role that George would have handled."He,s a guy that would demand significant minutes … even on a U.S. team, where he probably would,ve been a starter," coach Mike Krzyzewski said during a conference call, noting that George could have played some power forward along with small forward."Paul is one of the great defensive players in the league," Krzyzewski added. "So earlier in the week we had talked – he had even come up to me and said, `Coach, that,s the role I want. I want to be able to defend whoever is the best perimeter player. Whoever you want me to be on, I want to do that for you., And so you lose a player of that caliber, you take a hit."The Americans trimmed the roster by cutting Washington,s John Wall and Bradley Beal, and Atlanta,s Paul Millsap. They have to get down to 12 before the World Cup of Basketball begins Aug. 30 in Spain. The players remaining are: Oklahoma City,s Kevin Durant, Chicago,s Nike KD 5 Aunt Pearl Rose, Cleveland,s Kyrie Irving, New Orleans, Anthony Davis, Golden State,s Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, Houston,s James Harden, Atlanta,s Kyle Korver, Sacramento,s DeMarcus Cousins, Dallas, Chandler Parsons, Utah,s Gordon Hayward, Toronto,s DeMar DeRozan, Portland,s Damian Lillard, Denver,s Kenneth Faried, Detroit,s Andre Drummond and Brooklyn,s Mason Plumlee.George would have been on the team but was injured when his leg crashed into the bottom of the basket stanchion after he tried to block a shot during the Americans, intrasquad exhibition game Friday in Las Vegas. He had surgery early Saturday and was expected to return to Indiana this week. The injury, the most significant suffered by a U.S. player since pros were first used in 1992, could lead to a discussion of whether the policy should be changed. Former NBA Commissioner David Stern and current Commissioner Adam Silver had floated the idea of an under-23 Olympic tournament before the 2012 Games, a change neither players nor world governing body FIBA were interested in considering."We can only deal with the facts as they are. Players are allowed to play; owners are not to dissuade them from playing," said USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo, who downplayed criticisms that the location of the stanchion caused the injury. "It,s all part of an agreement, and as long as the rules are as they are, we,ll continue on that basis until it changes."The Americans planned to make Saturday but put that off after George,s injury. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, the loudest critic of the current system, has said the NBA shouldn,t be allowing its players to participate when all the profits go to the international organizations. But Colangelo said the Americans aren,t concerned about players not wanting to compete. Two-time Olympic gold medalists LeBron James, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony could rejoin the team in 2016."There will not be a shortage of players who want to play," Colangelo said. The Americans, deep roster pool has perhaps never been more important than this summer, when Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldridge and NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard had already pulled out before George,s injury. Krzyzewski said he wasn,t sure when the staff would reduce the roster again. The Americans will wrap up their domestic training in New York before heading overseas in defense of their world title."We have a job to do and hopefully we can accomplish our goal," Colangelo said. Téma: Jak postupovat / scarpe da calcio Timberwolves weighing Love options(1) The summer of LeBron has quickly turned into the summer of Love. When it ends is anybody’s guess. The Minnesota Timberwolves are weighing their options when it comes to trading All-Star Kevin Love, with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls both trying to land the versatile forward. But any talks are complicated by an scarpe da calcio rule that requires a 30-day waiting period to trade any rookie that signs his contract. Talks have picked up again this week, with the Cavaliers coming off of their long-held resistance to including No. 1 overall draft Andrew Wiggins in an offer and making a trade with Utah on Tuesday to help make an acquisition easier to pull off. Just as the Cavs appeared to be closing in on grabbing Love to pair with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving in a new-look “Big 3” in Cleveland, the Bulls appear to be making one last run to try to wrestle him away from their Eastern Conference competitors. The Bulls reached out to the Timberwolves again Wednesday, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions who requested anonymity because the teams were not publicly commenting on the process. But it remained unclear just how far they are willing to go to try to turn Minnesota’s scarpe da calcio away from Cleveland. The Timberwolves were big fans of Bulls rookie Doug McDermott in the pre-draft process, but he landed in Chicago on a draft-night deal with Denver. McDermott shined at the Las Vegas Summer League, showing a versatile and NBA-ready offensive game, and after missing out on Carmelo Anthony in free agency. That would make it difficult for the Bulls, who need all the offensive help they can get, to part with him. In coveting Wiggins and McDermott, the Wolves have the same obstacle with both teams. McDermott signed his contract on Tuesday and Wiggins was expected to sign his contract later this week. That means no potential deal involving either of those two players could be officially executed for 30 days after the signing. That’s a lifetime in the NBA. Teams could agree in principle to trades before the period ends, but waiting around for the deadline to pass and for the ink to dry to be tense. Thirty days gives everyone involved in the deal a lot of time to think, and other teams to see the agreement and make renewed pushes for Love, one of the best power forwards in the game. The Timberwolves have already made it clear that that the only way the Cavs get Love, who is scheduled to report for Team USA training camp in Las Vegas next week, is if they include Wiggins in the deal. A package with Wiggins, former No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett and a future first-round draft pick would likely force Wolves president and coach Flip Saunders to endure a more drastic rebuild than he initially had hoped for when trading the face of his franchise. The Wolves are also considering involving a third team in the deal to both unload contacts like J.J. Barea and bring another veteran in at power forward to help fill Love’s sizable shoes. Kevin Martin was another player thought to be included in trade talks, but the Timberwolves would likely need his offense and his experience on a young team if a deal with the Cavaliers is completed. There are also financial implications to consider. Until Wiggins is officially under contract, he holds no monetary value in any deal and the Cavs must clear salary in order to take on Love’s contract. Wiggins’ contract will be worth $5.5 million next season, which gets the Cavs much further down the road to matching Love’s salary. The longer the trade takes to get finalized, the greater the risk it could fall apart. The Timberwolves are already leery of parting with their franchise player and anything that drags negotiations out could hinder Cleveland’s chances of landing Love. Excited fans are on the edge of their seats waiting for a resolution that likely isn’t coming anytime soon. The 30-day moratorium also prevents the teams from publicly acknowledging any agreement, meaning the rumor-filled summer of Love is likely to drag on.
