Téma: Adopce na dálku / - The Royals have agreed to terms with MONTREAL — For a second year in a row, the Montreal Alouettes will start the CFL season with a new head coach. Alouettes owner Bob Wetenhall announced Monday that Tom Higgins will be the clubs new head coach. The former Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders bench boss replaces general manager Jim Popp, who took over on Aug. 1 when the inexperienced Dan Hawkins was fired only five games into the 2013 season. Wetenhall made it clear in a statement that he did not want Popp, who is considered one of the CFLs best GMs but has a career 16-20 record as a coach, to continue in both jobs. “As Ive expressed to the media in recent weeks, I wanted to continue with the formula which has brought us the success weve enjoyed these past 17 years — having a full-time head coach and a full-time general manager to fill each of these positions,” said Wetenhall. "The criteria we established was to find an individual familiar with the CFL; someone with success in that position and a background as a position coach. In addition, we sought an individual with a record for moulding and delivering championship teams. “In Toms seven years as a head coach he won three division championships along with a Grey Cup, and twice earned recognition as the CFLs coach of the year. His head coaching record of 72-53-1 speaks for itself. We welcome Tom to the Alouettes family.” Popp had made no secret of wanting to continue coaching, but Wetenhall put out a statement recently saying candidates would be interviewed. A year ago, the Alouettes waited until Feb. 19 to name Hawkins, a former U.S. university coach with no experience of the Canadian game. He was 2-3 when he was fired with the team in disarray. Popp, the Alouettes GM since they returned to Montreal in 1996, took over as coach for the third time in his career and went 6-7. It marked only the second time since 1996 the team had a losing record, matching the 8-10 mark Popp put up in his only full season as head coach in 2007. It hurt that starting quarterback Anthony Calvillo was lost for the season in August to a concussion. This time, the team waited five days longer to name a new coach and came up with Higgins, who stepped down in December after five years as the CFLs director of officiating. Higgins did not even get introduced at a press conference. The club said “time constraints and personal obligations” prevented bringing him to Montreal for the announcement, but that he will talk to the media Tuesday on a conference call. He takes over a team that will not have CFL all-time passing leader Calvillo as its starter for the first time since 2000. Instead, 2006 Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith and young prospect Tanner Marsh are pegged to replace the retired future Hall of Famer. Higgins, who will turn 60 on July 13, led the Eskimos to 13-5 records twice and won a Grey Cup in 2003 in his four years with the club. He had a 28-25 record in three seasons in Calgary from 2005 to 2007. “Tom has worked with and tutored many of the CFLs finest quarterbacks — Doug Flutie, Henry Burris and Ricky Ray, to mention a few,” said team president Mark Weightman. “His expertise will be invaluable in the development of Troy Smith and Tanner Marsh.” Higgins has spent 23 years in various CFL jobs, including a stint as GM in Edmonton. A native of Woodbridge, N.J., and a former linebacker and defensive tackle, Higgins played for Calgary and Saskatchewan in the 1970s. Popp replaced Rod Rust as coach at the end of the 2001 season, but gave way for Don Matthews the following season. He stepped in again when Matthews left for health reasons in 2006. Marc Trestman, now coach of the Chicago Bears, coached the club from 2008-2012, winning two Grey Cups. wholesale jerseys. Kansas City also agreed Thursday to deals with left-handers Francisley Bueno, Chris Dwyer, Donnie Joseph and John Lamb; right-handers Yordano Ventura and Michael Mariot; and infielders Peddro Ciriaco and Christian Colon.dddddddddddd The flurry of agreements leaves just three players unsigned for the 2014 season: left-hander Danny Duffy, infielder Johnny Giavotella and outfielder Carlos Peguero. If deals cant be reached with pre-arbitration players, contracts can be renewed at the clubs discretion provided they meet a series of salary criteria. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Adopce na dálku / list was negotiated while the deal was being CALGARY — The Calgary Flames seem to be more comfortable when theyre against the ropes. Joe Colborne capped off a thrilling game, scoring the only goal of the shootout as the Flames overcame a two-goal third period deficit for an improbable 4-3 win over the red-hot St. Louis Blues on Monday. In the shootout, Colborne shot first and beat Jaroslav Halak on a deke for his third goal on four attempts this season. Reto Berra secured the victory in net by denying TJ Oshie, Derek Roy and Magnus Paajarvi. “Weve been doing it all year,” said Colborne. “It seems like when we have a lead going into the third period, were more nervous than we are when we come in and were down.” Flames captain Mark Giordano forced the shootout, dramatically tying the game with five seconds left in the third period. Patrick Berglunds holding penalty gave Calgary a power play for the final 1:37 of the third. Flames coach Bob Hartley added more pop to his offence by pulling Berra, making it a six-on-four situation. The ploy worked as Calgary poured on the pressure. At one point after a slick passing sequence, rookie Sean Monahan — staring at an empty net — had the tying goal roll off his stick. No matter, Hudlers long diagonal pass was one-timed in by Giordano, sending the sell-out crowd of 19,289 into a frenzy. “I was just hoping he saw me because I saw the lane open right up,” Giordano said. “When I saw it coming over and he laid it nice and flat for me. I just obviously tried to get a shot on net and it was a really good feeling to see that one go in for sure.” Hartley likes his teams determination when its behind. “We know the trademark of our team. Credit goes to our players. They never quit,” Hartley said. “We dont want to fall behind but we always feel as a coaching staff that we keep supporting those guys and they always come up with a big goal, a big effort.” After the game Hartley emphasized the importance of heading in to the holiday season on a high note. “This morning, I told them. I know its one game out of 82 but the last game before Christmas, its always special,” said Hartley. “Youre going home, your families will be around and many times they talk to you about your last game. So, for our players, to go back in their families, theyll have plenty to talk about.” Among the conversation starters will be defeating the Blues when they score first as they did — St. Louis entered the night 21-1-2 when that occurs, and when they lead after two periods as they did — they entered the night 16-0-2 in that scenario. The Flames lead the league in one-goal games, the latest being a 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday in which a third period comeback came up short. Hudler and Mike Cammalleri also scored for Calgary (14-17-6) on Monday. The win kicked off a five-game homestand for the Flames and also snapped a three-game winless skid. Kevin Shattenkirk, Jaden Schwartz and Paajarvi scored for St. Louis (24-7-5) in regulation. The Blues took three out of four points in Alberta and head home 5-1-2 in their last eight. “Its uncharacteristic but a learning lesson for us,” said Blues captain David Backes. “We played a team tonight that played their butts off and was on an uphill trajectory all game. They got better as the game went on and we plateaued and took out foot off the gas a little bit.” The Blues looked like they had the game well under control when goals 44 seconds apart in the second period from Schwartz and Paajarvi broke open a 1-1 tie and sent St. Louis to the intermission up by two. “Teams in the west will take it to you if you let your foot off the gas and this team is no different. A little credit to them but were going to look inside our room and make sure were better next time we come out,” said Backes. Blues coach Ken Hitchcock spoke only briefly and echoed what his captain said. “We lost composure with the puck. We made some puck errors. We got caught not clearing pucks at the end. We had full control of the hockey game,” said Hitchcock. “We were just winding the game down and made some puck errors and the next thing you know it was in our net.” Berra had 32 saves, while Halak made 26 stops. Notes: Flames centre Matt Stajan left the game late in overtime after a knee-on-knee collision with David Backes, who was penalized for kneeing on the play. There was no update after the game on his condition. … Calgary announced that Curtis Glencross (high ankle sprain), who earlier in the year missed 15 games with a knee injury, will miss eight weeks while D Kris Russell (sprained knee) will miss the next 4-6 weeks. Also out is C Blair Jones (knee, indefinite). That left D Derek Smith as the lone healthy scratch… Taking Russells spot on the Calgary blue-line was Chris Breen…. PAUL, Minn.We are hearing the possibility that Martin St. Louis and Ryan Kesler have demanded to be traded. In the case of St. Louis, not much of an effort has been made to deny reports of a trade request. Now both players have no-trade clauses in their contracts – and the wisdom of granting a player a no-trade has long been debated. Ultimately, its a very risky move since the only certainty with athletes is uncertainty. They can go down at any time, see a significant drop in their production or relationships can sour. As well, player production aside, a team may see an opportunity to improve its team by way of trade, but cant close on the deal because a player has a no-trade. Some players, however, insist on the provision being included in their contracts on the basis that they dont want to leave. The player and his family are committed to the team and the city. In certain circumstances, teams will agree to it. With a no-trade clause, the team bears the risk. Its one-sided and may potentially cause long-term damage to a team. This is particularly the case in a salary cap world, where return on investment is critical and a failure to achieve may be fatal to a teams likelihood of success. The risk is amplified when a player with a no-trade demands a trade. As a result of having a no-trade, the player decides where he goes. Since his contract provides he cant be traded (despite ironically demanding a trade), the player is in complete control. As a result, the team foorfeits significant leverage in seeking a fair return on the player.dddddddddddd By way of example, if its known that St. Louis will only go to the Rangers, then there is no good reason for the Rangers to offer up an equal return. General managers rely on multiple teams bidding on a player to drive up the return. However, if a player says that of the four teams interested, he wont go to three, the teams hands are tied and its potential return is instantly undermined. Can that risk be mitigated? Yes. Give the player the no-trade clause he so deeply desires. However, include a trigger in the contract that provides that in the event the player demands a trade, he agrees to be traded to any team on a previously negotiated list of teams. That could, for example, be a list of 10 teams. That list was negotiated while the deal was being worked out – and is part of the contract. Lets be clear: the no-trade wouldnt be null and void. Rather, the no-trade would now qualified by the mutually-accepted list of teams. The sides negotiated the deal and the terms of the contract govern the relationship. If a provision is no longer convenient for either side, thats life. NHL player contracts dont account for irony. By structuring the contract this way, the player gets the assurance he wont be moved, while the team is able to better manage its risk. Otherwise absolute no-trade clauses tie the hands of teams and make it a real challenge to get a proper return on a player. ’ ’ ’ |

And when they do both, they can make beating even a good team look easy. Taj Gibson scored 21 points, Carlos Boozer added 15 points and 13 rebounds, and the Bulls used a big third-quarter run to win for the seventh time in eight games, pounding the Golden State Warriors 103-83 Wednesday night. Jimmy Butler scored 16 points after missing two games with bruised ribs, Mike Dunleavy Jr. added 15, and Joakim Noah grabbed 17 rebounds for Chicago. The Bulls dominated on the glass 56-41, forced 16 turnovers and held All-Star Stephen Curry in check while bringing Golden States four-game win streak to an emphatic end. “I thought we were playing well before the break, and as a group, we talked about continuing to keep it going after the break,” Boozer said. “Nows the time to step on the gas pedal and really get ready for the playoffs.” The Bulls hit the 100-point mark for the third time in four games and shut down a high-scoring team in the process. Jordan Crawford scored 16 points, but it was a rough night for the Warriors even though David Lee returned to the rotation. He came off the bench to score 11 points in 20 minutes after being hospitalized with a stomach flu and missing two games. “Timing was a little off,” Lee said. “I was definitely more winded quicker than I would have been. Twenty minutes felt like about 55 minutes tonight on the court, but that usually is going to happen the first game back. Im glad I got that under my belt and Im ready for the next one.” Curry, meanwhile, tied a season low with five points on 2-of-10 shooting with Kirk Hinrich guarding him and the Warriors never found a rhythm. “He always seems to keep a hand on you and never really gives a beat when his help isnt there,” Curry said. “Hes very consistent at funneling you where they want you to go. Tonight it was even difficult to get him off-balance and going the opposite way. They made adjustments from the first game (a home win over the Bulls on Feb. 6), and we were just a step slow on making our adjustments iin the game.dddddddddddd They just outplayed us from start to finish.” The Warriors trailed by 11 at the half and were within eight in the third quarter when things got out of hand. Dunleavy blocked Andre Iguodalas layup with 7:33 left to send the Bulls were on their way. Hinrich converted a three-point play, igniting a 14-2 run that sealed this one for Chicago. Butler stole a pass by Lee, leading to a layup for Boozer, and scored on a putback that made it 66-51 with 5:52 remaining. After Dunleavy hit a free throw, Boozer capped the run with three straight baskets — a 15-footer, a short jumper and a 13-foot bank shot — that bumped Chicagos lead to 73-53 with 3:20 to go in the quarter. Afterward, Hinrichs defence against one of the leagues top scorers drew heavy praise. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau acknowledged Curry missed a few shots he normally makes but was quick to praise his veteran guard. “You never can measure his true value if you go by statistics,” Thibodeau said. “If you go by what he is doing for your team, setting the tone for the defence with his ball pressure, his hustle plays, first to the floor, running your team — the things he does, it really ignites and inspires your team. And he plays to win. I think that its never lost on his teammates, and its certainly not lost on the coaches or the organization.” NOTES: Bulls star Derrick Rose has started running as he tries to work his way back from another season-ending knee injury, although Thibodeau said a return to practice remains a long way off. “Nowhere close to practicing,” he said. “Hes doing some running. Hes off the treadmill. Still on it at some times, but his full weight now, and doing lateral slides and things like that. Nowhere near practicing or anything like that.” He also reiterated that Rose will not return this season. … Warriors coach Mark Jackson praised Thibodeau, who was an assistant to Jeff Van Gundy when Jackson played for the New York Knicks. “He was a guy you knew was going to be a very good coach,” Jackson said. “Worked his tail off and was committed to his craft. Im very happy for him.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Adopce na dálku / That will be a crazy series for me TORONTO — DeMar DeRozan had zero intention of losing to the Golden State Warriors for a second time this season. DeRozan had one of his best games of the season as he scored 32 points to lead the Raptors past the Warriors 104-98 on Sunday afternoon, with the memory of Toronto giving up a 27-point lead to Golden State in December still lingering in his mind. “It was a big win, big win against a great Western Conference team,” DeRozan said. “Especially with the way we lost at their place. The way that we lost was definitely tough, we understood that coming into tonight so it was definitely a big win.” Acknowledging that the December loss was something Raptors players had thought about coming into Sundays contest, DeRozan downplayed his own stellar offensive output. “I just got out and played, to be honest,” DeRozan said. “Just try to go out there and play to win. I understand that every game we go out and play, how important it is and everybody in this locker-room really wants to make the playoffs so Im just going out there doing whatever I can.” DeRozan did more than just play on Sunday afternoon. He won the efficiency battle against Stephen Curry to give Toronto its first victory against the Warriors with Golden States all-star guard in the lineup. While Curry finished with 34 points on 13-for-27 shooting, DeRozan put in an all-star performance, scoring his 32 points on 10-for-16 shooting from the floor and 11-for-12 from the line. He also recorded four rebounds, six assists and a steal. Kyle Lowry added 13 points and eight assists for Toronto (33-26), while Patrick Patterson had 12 points and five rebounds. Currys 34 points for Golden State (36-24) were a game-high. David Lee added 20 points and 11 rebounds. While DeRozan was quiet about his own big night, he was effusive in his praise of his point guard. “Whatever I say about Kyle is an understatement,” DeRozan said. “We go off him to be honest, man. We just ride off him, thats a hell of a player right there. Hes there reason why Im getting 30 points.” Golden State went ahead by five points early in the fourth quarter before the Raptors reeled off an 11-0 run to take a 92-86 lead with less than six minutes remaining. Torontos fourth quarter scoring attack was led by DeRozan who scored 12 of his 32 in the quarter. “We just lost our composure on the offensive end a little bit and didnt play solid enough on the other end in the last five minutes,” Curry said. “We had a five-point lead with eight minutes left, they went on an 11-0 run and we didnt have an answer for it.” The game was close throughout, with Toronto holding a five-point lead at halftime. Things remained tight in the third with Curry scoring 14 in the quarter. The Warriors took a three-point advantage into the final quarter, ahead 78-75. Toronto shot 57 per cent through the first quarter, but found themselves behind by three at the end of one. Terrence Ross missed the game for the Raptors after spraining his ankle in the first half of Torontos triple-overtime loss to the Washington Wizards on Thursday. Landry Fields started in his place. It was the second start for Fields this season and he made his presence felt early, scoring six points in the opening quarter. After the game, Fields was singled out by coach and teammates for stepping up when he was needed. Casey said he went with Fields in the starting lineup because of what he could bring to the floor defensively. “He got switched off on Curry a few times and I thought his length helped us,” Casey said. “Im a defensive guy and if guys are willing to play defence theyre going to have a big advantage over guys who are not defensive minded. Landry has done that for us and I commend him on his professionalism. Not playing at all, he was ready to go when his number was called.” Lowry echoed the words of his coach. “Landrys just being professional,” Lowry said. “He hasnt played in a while and he comes in tonight, unbelievable defensive effort. Saved me a few times by cutting backdoor, just being there and being athletic the way he can play. Hes been through a lot and youre just happy for him as a player, as a teammate. Youre happy for the opportunity and the things he was able to do tonight.” For a team that has continued to say that they are 15 players deep, seeing a teammate step up meant a lot to the Raptors locker room. “Weve got great 15, 14, 13 guys. Weve got guys, Julyan (Stone), (Dwight) Buycks, Landry (Fields), Steve (Novak), theyve been true professionals. People dont see it from the outside looking in, but theyre as big a part as this team as anybody.” Jermaine ONeal was not available for the Warriors after the team discovered he was missing his passport. ONeal had been with the team for their previous game against New York and head coach Mark Jackson said the team would meet him in Indiana for their Tuesday night game against the Pacers. Bumgarner struck out 10 in seven innings of four-hit ball, outpitching Jonathon Niese to lead San Francisco over the New York Mets 2-1 Thursday. Juan Perez went 3 for 3 with an RBI single in his hometown, and the World Series champions won for the eighth time in 11 games. After taking two of three from the Mets, the Giants wont even change hotels — they remain in New York this weekend to play three interleague games at Yankee Stadium. Scores of San Francisco fans filled an otherwise empty Citi Field all series, and the Giants received a loud ovation as they walked off following the final out. “Its nice to have a good fan base like that,” Bumgarner said. “Especially this far away, it makes it a lot of fun when they care that much about us.” Bumgarner (13-9) has gone 19 straight starts without yielding more than three earned runs, the longest streak by a San Francisco pitcher since Tim Lincecums 19 in a row from 2007-08. The previous Giants hurler to do it during one season was Ed Whitson in 1980, according to STATS. Niese (7-8) threw seven solid innings for the Mets, who rallied for four runs in the ninth to win 5-4 on Wednesday night. They batted .184 while going 4-7 on their penultimate homestand. “I established all of my pitches, threw them all for strikes, got my cutter working on both sides of the plate,” Niese said. With a runner on second, Javier Lopez retired pinch-hitters Lucas Duda and Anthony Recker for his first save since Sept. 11 last year. Recker struck out to end a crisp game that took 2 hours, 37 minutes. Giants closer Sergio Romo, who had a blown save Wednesday, was rested after throwing 50 pitches over the previous two days. Bumgarner caught a potentially painful break in the sixth. With runners at the corners, Wilmer Flores hit a sharp grounder that appeared headed up the middle for a tying single. But the ball smacked off Bumgarners left shin and pinballed right to first baseman Buster Posey for the third out. “Felt a lot better when we got him out,” Bumgarner said. Bumgarner walked back to the dugout with no problem, then retired Eric Young Jr. with two on to end the seventh after a visit from pitching coach Dave Righetti. Following his 13th career game with double-digit strikeouts, Bumgaarner needs one more K to reach 200 in a season for the first time.dddddddddddd. The All-Star left-hander surpassed 200 innings for the third consecutive year. “Feels good. I mean, thats what all starters are trying to do, really,” Bumgarner said. “Thats the main concern for me really is the innings, trying to get to 200 every year. So Ive kind of been keeping an eye on it here the last month or so.” Jean Machi pitched a perfect eighth. San Francisco scored twice in the fourth after Hector Sanchez hit a one-out double. Joaquin Arias blooped a single and Perez, who went to high school in New York City, delivered an RBI single. Perez also walked during a perfect day at the plate and set a career high for hits. “Its like a dream come true, coming back home in front of my friends, family, people that watched me play when I was little,” Perez said. “Its a moment that I would say Ill never forget.” Ehire Adrianza, making his first major league start, beat out a double-play ball to drive in another run. Perez was among the Giants rookies who found cowboy hats, boots and orange-and-black acoustic guitars waiting for them at their lockers after the game — costumes for some good-natured hazing. “Just trying to have some fun, end of the year,” said Lopez, who refused to disclose the ringleaders. Perez, however, figured there wasnt much need for him to dress up for dinner back home in the Bronx. He said he left about 10 tickets Thursday for family and friends, including his mother, wife, daughter and sister. Perez said hell have many more folks coming to the Yankees series — including his father, who was unable to attend Thursday because he was working. “That will be a crazy series for me, tickets-wise,” the outfielder said. Josh Satin had a leadoff double in the fourth for New Yorks first hit. He scored on Daniel Murphys single, but Bumgarner avoided further damage with the help of some fine defence by Arias at third. Téma: Adopce na dálku / NBA All-Star weekend has come to a humbling AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Eric Gordon drove through the lane, and his floater gave New Orleans the lead with 1.9 seconds left. Then, remarkably, the Pelicans never really had to go back and defend. Instead of calling a timeout, Detroit inbounded the ball, and when Brandon Jennings missed a shot from near midcourt, New Orleans had a 103-101 victory over the Pistons on Friday night. “Thats on them,” Gordon said. “Well take the win.” Detroit lost even after a 30-4 run in the third quarter put the Pistons ahead 78-62. New Orleans reeled off the next nine points to pull within striking distance. The Pelicans took a 99-98 lead when Anthony Davis was credited with a tip-in, and it was 101-98 after Anthony Morrows two free throws with 30.8 seconds left. Detroits Rodney Stuckey drew a foul with 27.4 seconds left. He made the first free throw and missed the second, but New Orleans couldnt come up with the rebound. Jennings missed a 3-pointer, but Josh Smith rebounded and made a layup to tie it at 101 with 19 seconds to play. Gordon patiently ran the clock down, spun past rookie Kentavious Caldwell-Pope near the free throw line and finished at the basket with a high floater. “It was for me to get it up top, one on one,” Gordon said. “Its all about making that last judgment, and trying to get a good shot.” After Jennings final miss, Detroit coach Maurice Cheeks stood near his bench yelling for a timeout. Too late. “I tried to call a timeout,” Cheeks said. “That timeout is on me.” Detroit wasted a 28-point performance from Jennings and 21 points and 20 rebounds from Andre Drummond. Morrow scored 21 points for New Orleans, which won for only the second time in 11 games. Morrow had been sick and hadnt played in more than a week. “Being sick and kind of being out of the rotation — just got to fight through it,” Morrow said. “Got to be a professional.” The Pelicans were without Jrue Holiday, Ryan Anderson, Jason Smith and Tyreke Evans because of injuries Friday. Jennings scored 18 points in the third quarter. New Orleans led 58-48 early in the second half after a dunk by Alexis Ajinca. The Pistons scored the next 18 points and kept pouring it on for much of the quarter, with Jennings drawing fouls and breezing in for layups. The Pistons capped their 18-0 run in the third with five points on one trip down the court. Smith scored while being fouled, and although he missed the free throw, Detroit came up with the ball and Jennings connected from way behind the 3-point line to make it 66-58. Detroit spent more than half the quarter in the bonus. Jennings made two free throws to make it 68-60, then quickly stole the ball and found Caldwell-Pope for a dunk. “Obviously, our third quarter is one of the worst third quarters we have had,” Pelicans coach Monty Williams said. “The NBA is a game where there is only so long that you can come back and the 3-point ball kind of allows you to do that.” It was 80-71 after three quarters. New Orleans got another scare with 6:19 to play in the fourth when Davis fell hard under the basket and appeared to hurt his tailbone. But he was able to stay in the game. Davis finished with 14 points. Gordon and Austin Rivers had 15 each, helping the Pelicans rally for the win. “We just make poor decisions down the stretch of the game sometimes and we have to get better at it,” Drummond said. “Nip that in the bud and try to finish games up.” NOTES: Davis was the top pick in the 2012 draft. Téma: Adopce na dálku / the Devils have approximately JOLIET, Ill. — NASCAR tweaked its restart rules Sunday and will now allow the second-place driver to beat the leader to the start-finish line after confusion has reigned all season. The change was announced in the pre-race driver meeting at Chicagoland Speedway, where NASCAR has been dealing with the fallout from a manipulated race at Richmond last week. Overshadowed in the scandal was yet another restart in which many fans felt NASCAR missed a call when it failed to penalize Carl Edwards for jumping the final restart. Edwards clearly beat leader Paul Menard to the line, wasnt penalized and won the race. NASCAR said Menard spun his tires. Going forward, the leader controls the start in the restart zone. But once the green flag waves, the second-place car can beat the leader to the line, allowing NASCAR to take race control out of the equation. “It will take out one area of subjectivity on our part,” said vice-president of competition Robin Pemberton. "Its too competitive out there right now, and to be honest, it needs to be in the hands of the drivers on who decides these races. Not the (NASCAR scoring) tower when it comes down to one of those calls. “Things are getting too close, and this year weve seen more wheelspin than ever, probably because of some chassis adjustments. Its just got to the point that it was too much (that) we had to make a call and evaluate the restarts too much from the tower. It needs to be back in the hands of the competitor for the most part.” Patrick Sharp Red Jersey. Duncan Keith Blackhawks Jersey.C. – The New Orleans Saints will have to wait another week for a chance to clinch a playoff spot. The New Jersey Devils have managed to miss the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, defying the statistical odds in the process. Off-Season Game Plan looks at a Devils team that is likely due for better results, and at least part of that is due to the impending departure of a future Hall of Famer. This past season, the Devils ranked fifth in Fenwick Close (unblocked 5-on-5 shot attempts when the game is within a goal through two periods, or tied in the third), after they were ranked third the year before. The most glaring reason for a team to not have success despite strong puck possession metrics is a bad run with percentages and thats been true with the Devils. This past season, the most obvious run of bad luck for New Jersey was a 0-13 record in shootouts, games that are being decided, effectively, by coin flips. For a team that finished five points out of a playoff spot, even getting 40% of those 13 points would have been enough. The Devils were 2-7 in 2012-2013, too, running their two-year record to 2-20! This after going 12-4 in the shootout in 2011-2012. Those results fluctuate. But, its not just a bad run on shootout winning percentage that has come back to get the Devils. Theyve also had subpar goaltending. Over the past four years, the Devils 5-on-5 save percentage ranks 28th. In 2013-2014, the Devils overall save percentage of .907 ranked 23rd in the league, a step up from being ranked 28th with an .890 save percentage, the year before. These percentages, combined with the bad run in shootouts serve to undermine what is, otherwise, a competitive hockey team. Not likely a Cup contender, their 2012 Cup Final appearance notwithstanding, but good enough to be a playoff team if the percentages arent dramatically awful. This goes back to the premise that the Devils may be looking better in that regard going forward, as it appears Martin Brodeurs run in New Jersey is coming to an end. A four-time Vezina Trophy winner who has won more games (688) and recorded more shutouts (124) than any other goaltender, Brodeur is 42-years-old and the numbers tell the story — hes no longer a starting-calibre goaltender, so if the Devils move ahead with Cory Schneider handling a true starters workload, that alone will already improve their chances of success. This isnt to suggest that everything will be fine once Brodeur moves on, because thats not the case. The Devils two best offensive players, Jaromir Jagr and Patrik Elias, are also getting on in years and there dont appear to be any heir apparents among New Jerseys prospects, so while the current Devils roster appears good enough to compete for a playoff spot, there is a ceiling on how good they can realistically expect to be. The TSN.ca Rating is an efficiency rating based on per-game statistics including goals and assists — weighted for strength (ie. power play, even, shorthanded) — Corsi, adjusted for zone starts, quality of competition and quality of teammates, hits, blocked shots, penalty differential and faceoffs. Generally, a replacement-level player is around a 60, a top six forward and top four defenceman will be around 70, stars will be over 80 and MVP candidates could go over 90. Sidney Crosby finished at the top of the 2013-2014 regular season ratings at 87.12. Salary cap information all comes from the indispensable www.capgeek.com. Hes lost a step, maybe two, but hes still a massive physical presence who can control the puck in the offensive zone. The Devils are also smart enough to utilize Jagr properly, focusing his attention on the offensive side of the game. Consistency is the hallmark of Patrik Eliass game, even as he hits his late thirties. Hes one of 10 players to have at least .70 points per game in every season since 2005-2006. Naturally, hes no longer at his peak but, at 38-years-old, Elias remains a reliable two-way player. Further removed from his Achilles injury, Travis Zajac had a more productive offensive season, though hes tended towards being a stronger two-way player than a typical first-line scoring centre. Even so, he still rates pretty well in terms of goal differential, on for 56.0% of 5-on-5 goals over the past six seasons. Not the most likely candidate to lead the Devils in goal-scoring last season, Adam Henrique doesnt generate that many shots. Among the 51 players to score at least 25 goals last season, two (Steven Stamkos and Valtteri Filppula) had fewer shots on goal than Henrique. The Devils have committed long-term to Zajac and Henrique down the middle and thats okay, but that pair might also come with a lower ceiling than other teams top-two centres. Power forward Ryane Clowe, signed last summer as an effective replacement for David Clarkson, has scored 10 goals in 83 games over the past two seasons, but he was still effective enough when healthy. The trouble is that health tends to go quickly for power forwards on the wrong side of 30, so health likely remains a risk going forward. Michael Ryder has scored at least 18 goals in five of the past six seasons (scoring 16 in the lockout-shortened season), but last years 34 points in 82 games represented the second-lowest scoring rate of his career. At 34, hes in decline, but has one year left on his contract, so its not as though the Devils are invested long-term; they can still hope that Ryder has enough left to give them 20 goals next season. Even after a decent rookie season, Damien Brunner had a bit of a hard time finding a contract last summer before ending up with the Devils. While hes counted on to provide complementary offence, two goals in his last 27 games didnt exactly fulfill that expectation. Hes skilled enough to complement skilled players, but does not appear be strong enough to drive play in his own right. 35-year-old Dainius Zubrus is a trusted soldier, who was often tasked with difficult checking assignments last season. Hes versatile enough to get moved around the lineup as needed. Acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes, veteran Tuomo Ruutu was very effective in New Jersey. He had a modest eight points in 19 games, but was also on the ice for more than 58% of the shots during 5-on-5 play. Ruutus body has taken a beating over the course of his career, and isnt too fleet afoot, but that seemed to work out all right while playing with Jagr, as they could use their power game to dominate possession. There are enough returning forwards that the Devils could press ahead with that top nine and replace (or re-sign) fourth-line free agents, but it wouldnt hurt to add another quality forward to the mix. Maybe someone like Devin Setoguchi or a return of Brian Gionta could work. Hes not a prototype No. 1 defenceman, but thats the role Greene fills for the Devils. There was a time when Anton Volchenkov hurled his body in front of every shot attempt, consistently ranking among the leagues blocked shot leaders — topping out at 273 in 2006-2007 — but those were days when he was playing 21 minutes per game, facing tough opposition. Now, Volchenkov is logging 16 minutes a game, facing relatively easy assignments. The question for the Devils to answer is whether or not its worth taking a $4.25-million cap hit for the next two seasons on a defenceman who doesnt play very much. A second-round pick in 2010, Jon Merrill didnt spent long in the AHL (27 games, scoring 18 points) before landing in New Jersey and he played well as a rookie. Not a standout, and not the kind of offensive contributions that he had in Albany or at the University of Michigan, but Merrill has the size and skating ability to find himself in a top-four role. Peter Harrold is a utility man, filling in wherever hes needed and even providing solid possession stats, but hes played 86 NHL games over the past four seasons. Bryce Salvador was a playoff hero in 2012 and while he continues to play 20 minutes a night, when healthy (he missed 42 games with injuries last season), hes been on the wrong end of the possession game. Hes 38-years-old, so it would be reasonable to cut back on his playing time. He can round out his game to earn the trust of the coaching staff, but theres no denying the impact that Eric Gelinas can have on the power play, as he scored 17 of his 29 points with the man advantage. The fourth overall pick in 2011, Adam Larsson hasnt been able to secure a regular spot in the lineup, with his ice time decreasing over the course of his three pro seasons. If hes not going to be part of the Devils plans next season, the 21-year-old is young enough that he would have value on the trade market. While Mark Fayne is an underrated defender that the Devils may lose to free agency, there could also be some appeal for the Devils to go after a veteran defenceman like Dan Boyle, Anton Stralman or Tom Gilbert to stabilize their top four. Over the past five years, Schneiders .928 save percentage is near the best in the league and the Devils should probably see what he can do with 55-60 starts. On the other hand, Brodeurs game has declined in recent seasons, as one might expect from a now 42-year-old goaltender. Picked in the second round last summer, Steve Santini is a rock-solid physical defenceman who had a strong freshman year at Boston College. Doesnt have the puck skills of some other New Jersey defence prospects. Picked in the fourth round in 2011, Reid Boucher is a goal-scorer with a big shot and while he scored all right in the AHL, he managed two goals and seven points in 23 games with New Jersey in his first audition. Powerfully-built Stefan Matteau, a first-round pick in 2012, seems a safe bet to develop into an NHL player, but hasnt scored enough to project him to fit into top half of the depth chart when he does reach the NHL for keeps. Undrafted out of Union College, Keith Kinkaid has put in three seasons in the AHL, with last season the best of the three. While there might be an opportunity to step in as the backup to Schneider, it could require a leap of faith to pencil Kinkaid into that spot. A sixth-round pick in 2011, Reece Scarlett had a solid first pro season, at least when he was healthy, but was limited to 48 games in his first pro season. A good showing next year could put Scarlett into consideration for New Jersey. Texas native Blake Coleman didnt score much in his first two seasons at Miami-Ohio, but broke through for 19 goals and 28 points in 27 games as a junior. Surely the Devils would appreciate if he could build on that with a strong senior campaign. Drafted in the third round last summer, Ryan Kujawinski has good size and can score, but missed time with hand and knee injuries last season. The 19-year-old should have a big year in the OHL next season. A fifth-round pick in 2012, Graham Black had modest production in the WHL, until last season, when he burst through with 97 points in 69 games as an overager. Time for him to make the move to the AHL. Picked in the fifth round in 2011, Blake Pietila has been a solid, if unspectacular collegiate player at Michigan Tech. The 21-year-old needs a strong senior campaign if hes going to be considered a serious prospect. Alexander Urbom is huge and got into 20 games with the Washington Capitals, after he was claimed on waivers last season, but he returned to the Devils organization, remaining a viable depth option on the blueline. Téma: Adopce na dálku / a man of means who could flee South Africa EDMONTON — Goals have not come easy this season for the Edmonton Oilers, but you wouldnt have known it from Tuesday night. David Perron had a career high four-point night with two goals and two assists as the Oilers experienced an offensive explosion, blasting the Columbus Blue Jackets 7-0 to record a rare home win for their second victory in a row. “We played the right way,” Perron said. “More games like that are going to happen if we do that. I doubt its going to be 7-0 every night, but I feel that we did get some bounces tonight. Its nice to get a decisive win like that, compared to (Saturdays 4-2 come-from-behind win over Calgary) where I didnt feel we deserved it, but we found a way.” Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk only needed 14 saves to record his first shutout of the season. Jordan Eberle, Ryan Smyth, Nail Yakupov, Taylor Hall and Justin Schultz also scored for the Oilers (6-12-2), who improved to just 2-7-0 in Edmonton this season. Edmonton was 2-9-1 in its previous 12 games before putting together just its second back-to-back win this year. “The wins have been few and far between and to have a game like that, especially at home, its good for the team, but more importantly its good for our fans,” said Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins. “Theyve been suffering just as much as we have. Its nice to give them something to go home feeling good about.” Yakupov said it wasnt just the offensive output, it was shutting the door the other way as well. “We didnt give up anything,” he said. “I didnt think we played awesome for 60 minutes, but I thought defensively, we played well. We played man-on-man and we were winning battles. I think we showed the fans how were capable of playing. We felt pretty comfortable out there.” The mood was completely different in the other dressing room as the Blue Jackets (7-11-3) have lost in four of their last five and nine of their last 11 games. “That was disgusting,” said Columbus forward Nick Foligno. "We knew what kind of team they are and we played right into their hands. It is on everybody in this room, it is embarrassing. We handed them goals and gave them power plays and opportunities. It was really tough to be a part of this. I hope we have hit rock bottom here and understand that we are not a team that can play like this. “This is the lowest of lows.” Blue Jackets head coach Todd Richards was left shaking his head after the poor performance. “Im just really, really disappointed,” he said. “We werent ready to play the game. We werent ready to battle or do the things necessary to win. There was no desperation and no urgency. I dont know if we get too high on ourselves. You are going to have no success in this league, and it was proven first-hand tonight, if you arent ready and willing to battle. This is what will happen to you.” The Oilers started the scoring two-and-a-half minutes into the opening period as the rebound on a Corey Potter point shot came to Eberle at the side of the net and he had a wide-open cage to deposit it into before Columbus starter Sergei Bobrovsky could get across. Edmonton came into the game with only one goal in its previous four home games. The Oilers had been outscored 23-3 in their previous six home games, continued on to equal that goal output in the first period alone thanks to a pair of power-play goals. Edmonton made it 2-0 with eight minutes remaining in the first as Perron intercepted a pass with his skate and shifted it to his stick for a quick shot and then swooped in to deposit the rebound for his sixth of the season. Four minutes later, the Oilers had a rare three-goal lead, as Sam Gagner sent a pass through the crease and Smyth was able to bat it out of the air and in. Edmonton had 15 shots in the first, while the Blue Jackets only mustered three shots on Dubnyk. The Oilers took a 4-0 lead eight-and-a-half minutes into the second as the puck came to Perron off of a face-off win by Boyd Gordon and he picked the top corner with a shot from a bad angle for his third goal in the last two games. Curtis McElhinney came in to replace Bobrovsky, who allowed four goals on 18 shots. It didnt take long for the Oilers to get one past the back-up goalie either, as Perron made a terrific play to intercept a clearing attempt on an Edmonton power play and got a shot on net, with Yakupov following up to score his fourth of the season on the rebound with nine minutes to play in the second. Columbus had its best chance of the game to that point less than a minute later as Ryan Johansen got in tight on the Edmonton net, but Dubnyk made a good play to poke the puck away. The offensive explosion continued for the Oilers with just under five minutes to play in the second as Schultz joined the play on an odd-man rush and beat McElhinney with a shot high to the glove side. It was the 10th straight goal the Oilers had scored in less than a 60-minute span going back to a four-goal third period to defeat the Flames 4-2 in Calgary on Saturday. Edmonton was looking for more midway through the third but Gagner was unable to score his first goal of the season, sending a shot into a mostly empty net right on McElhinney who was down and doing snow angels in the crease on the play. The Oilers made it 7-0 with three minutes left as Eberle sent Hall in on a breakaway and he was able to score five-hole on the Jackets netminder. Notes: It was the first of just two meetings between the two teams this season. The Oilers will quickly return the favour by visiting Columbus on Nov. 29a It was the first time the first and second overall picks from the 2012 NHL Entry faced each other in the pro ranks. Edmonton, who won the draft lottery, jumped ahead of Columbus to select forward Yakupov. Columbus followed up that pick by taking defender Ryan Murray. After missing last season with a shoulder surgery, Murray came into the game with two goals and two assists in 20 games. In his second season, Yakupov had just three goals and three assists, but added a goal and an assist in this gamea Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov was on the Oilers bench as the backup to Dubnyk for the first time after signing as a free agent last week. No announcement has been made as to when he is expected to make his first starta Jackets goalie Bobrovsky served as Bryzgalovs back-up in Philadelphia for a season before getting traded to Columbus prior to the lockout-shortened campaign. He went 21-11-6 with a 2.00 GAA and four shutouts with the Blue Jackets last season, winning the Vezina Trophya Sophomore defenceman Justin Schultz made his return to the Oilers lineup after missing the previous eight games with a groin injurya Columbus winger Matt Calvert is expected to make his return from abdominal surgery some time this week. cheap jerseys from china. Today, we look back at one of the most shocking sports stories in recent years – Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorious being charged with murder. Oscar Pistorius was one of the feel-good figures of 2012. The Blade Runner became the first amputee runner to compete at an Olympic Games and carried the South African flag at the closing ceremony in London. His competitors sought his bib after they finished racing him and Pistorius embodied the type of anythings possible spirit that the Olympics cling to as a good will event. That all changed on Valentines Day of 2013, when word came out of South Africa that Pistorius had been charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The shocking details of the incident would come to light in early reports as well as a bail hearing that started five days later. Pistoriuss defence argued that the then-26-year-old got up in the middle of the niight to confront what he believed to be an intruder in his Pretoria home.dddddddddddd The sprinter got up and fired four shots through his locked bathroom door, hitting Steenkamp three times and killing her. After a change in investigators (due to pending attempted murder charges against officer Hilton Botha himself), the prosecution appealed for bail, painting Pistorius as a man of means who could flee South Africa. The verdict came down on February 22: Pistorius was granted bail with Magistrate Desmond Nair stating, “The issue before me is whether this accused, being who is and the assets he has (here), would seek to duck and dive all over the world.” “I cannot find that he is a flight risk,” he would conclude, leaving Pistorius free from jail time in the months leading up to his March 2014 trial. Pistorius would return to the track in June, resuming training in what his agent Peet van Zyl described as a “very emotional” and “bittersweet” experience. ’ ’ ’ |

National Weather Service meteorologist Anthony Gigi said Monday the forecast for Sundays NFL title game at MetLife Stadium calls for temperatures to reach a high of 39 with a low of 27, which is average for the area. There is little threat of precipitation. Gigi, who is based in Mount Holly, said a system is expected to pass through the region on Saturday night with the potential for a mixture of snow and rain. Since the Jets and Giants were awarded the Super Bowl in May 2010, there have been fears that a huge snowstorm would affect the game. The league and state officials have contingency plans for that scenario, including moving the game to Friday, Saturday or Monday, or changing the scheduled 6:25 p.m. starting time on Sunday. Téma: Adopce na dálku / put the ball in the bucket in the first half COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil — At least three World Cup stadiums in Brazil will not be finished by the end of December as FIFA requested. Soccers governing body said Tuesday the stadiums in Sao Paulo, Curitiba and Cuiaba are unable to meet the deadline because of construction delays. The announcement came after the World Cup organizing committee received updates from the six host cities that still must turn over the venues for next years tournament. The other six were ready for this years Confederations Cup. “Two stadiums will be delivered more in the region of February than in January or December,” FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke said. “Curitiba is the one where we are facing the most problems. Clearly, Curitiba will not be delivered before the end of February 2014, so thats a fact.” The stadium in Cuiaba also is expected to be ready in February, four months before the World Cup opens on June 12. FIFA said it still doesnt know when it will have the venue in Sao Paulo, where a crane collapse last week killed two workers and damaged part of the stadium. A report on the scale of the damage is expected by the end of the week. “We are in a period of time when the opening game of the World Cup will be played in Sao Paulo,” Valcke said. “We are not in a crisis mood where we are looking for an alternative to Sao Paulo. We are confident they can deliver the stadium on time (for the opener.)” The Sao Paulo venue, which will host the opening match, was almost ready when a giant crane buckled while hoisting a 500-ton metal structure that clipped part of the roof and cut through a huge lighting panel that runs across the venues outer facade. FIFA said it would not tolerate the same kinds of delays that plagued the Confederations Cup, when only two of the six venues were completed by the original deadline. Valcke said FIFA is already rearranging plans for the installation of temporary facilities at the venues that also will not be delivered by the deadline. FIFA President Sepp Blatter downplayed the delays. “There are some small delays in construction of stadia, but so small that, with one exception, we can just close our eyes and say everything will be ready,” Blatter said. FIFA wants the stadiums ready at least six months in advance mainly so there is time for at least two test events in each host city. It says there is no way of moving games because about 1 million tickets have already been sold for next years tournament. china jerseys. Its tough to argue that point. The 29-year-old Jefferson had a great run five years ago with Minnesota, but that came when the Timberwolves were irrelevant. This year Jefferson is spearheading the Bobcats charge to the playoffs and seemingly getting stronger and more confident with each passing game. “My confidence is up, especially on the defensive end, and Im just playing well,” Jefferson said. “In Minnesota we were 20 games under .500 and we were getting ready for the draft. Right now were in a dogfight. I mean its a dogfight man, and it just means a lot more to me.” Jefferson had 33 points and 10 rebounds on Friday night, helping the Bobcats beat the New Orleans Pelicans 90-87 for their third straight victory since the All-Star break. Jefferson has scored 29 points or more in eight of his last 11 games and at least 20 points in 17 of the last 19. Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said hes never coached a player who has been on a roll quite like the one Jefferson is on now. “Its unbelievable,” Clifford said. “I cant imagine many guys in the league are playing better than him right now.” And Jeffersons production might only increase in the coming months. The Bobcats traded for Gary Neal and Luke Ridnour on Thursday, looking to bolster their 3-point shooting. Jefferson said hes excited about the trade. He believes Neal will bring the Bobcats an outside presence, one that may force teams to think twice about how often they double team him in the low post. “Playing against (Neal) in Utah the last few years, I didnt like him — I didnt like him at all,” Jefferson said. “He didnt miss a lot of shots.” The Bobcats, currently the seventh seed in the East after Atlanta lost to Detroit, overcame some shoddy free throw shooting Friday night in the final minute to win for the seventh time in the last 10 games. Charlotte had missed four of six free throws in the final minute before Kemba Walker knocked down four foul shots in the final 9 seconds to put the Bobcats up by three. The Pelicans had a chance to send the game to overtime, but Josh McRoberts stripped Brian Roberts of the ball att midcourt and time expired.dddddddddddd Rookie Cody Zeller continues to steadily improve, chipping in with a career-high 13 points for the Bobcats. “Defensively Im starting to see plays before they happen and on offence Im playing with more confidence,” said Zeller, the fourth overall pick in the 2013 draft. Roberts had 20 points and Anthony Davis added 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Pelicans (23-31), who have lost four of their last five games. The Bobcats wasted no time exploiting the matchup of Jefferson on Alexis Ajinca, repeatedly dumping the ball in the low post. Jefferson had 14 points in the first quarter. The Pelicans also tried Greg Stiemsma and later Anthony Davis on Jefferson, but nobody had much success stopping him. The trio combined for 13 fouls. Charlotte was 25 of 36 from the foul line; the Pelicans attempted just 11 free throws. “I dont like wearing him down,” Pelicans coach Monty Williams said of the decision not to put Davis on Jefferson to start the game. "So, to put him on Al from the jump, I think it wears him out. We did that with Carmelo (Anthony) the last game and he did a good job and he did a good job on Al tonight. “And Al missed some shots. They got 36 free throws and we got 11. So you figure that out.” The Bobcats defence, which came in ranked fifth in the league in points allowed, limited the Pelicans to a season-low 32 points in the first half to take an 11-point lead at the break. “We couldnt put the ball in the bucket in the first half,” Davis said. “We played great defensively, but its tough to get out of that hole.” There was a comical moment in the fourth quarter after an errant pass. A fan retrieved the ball and fired it back to the official on the court just as Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was getting up from his seat on the bench. The ball hit Kidd-Gilchrist in the back of the head, causing him to flinch. NOTES: Clifford said newly acquired Neal and Ridnour will not play until next week as the NBA has yet to approve the deal. Both arrived in Charlotte on Friday and watched the game from behind the team bench. … Gerald Henderson is one of only eight guards in the NBA that has started every game this season for his team. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Obecná diskuze / The Colorado Rapids say theyve received a first- CHICAGO — Anthony Rizzo stayed at the plate for an extra second as his towering drive headed toward right field. The big first baseman just wanted to make sure it was fair before he got started on one enjoyable trip around the bases. Rizzo hit a two-run homer in the 13th inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the Miami Marlins 5-3 on Friday for their season-high fourth consecutive victory. “I think theyre playing with a lot of confidence right now and theyre continuing to pick each other up,” Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. “I think theyre starting to feel and know they can do this. You dont want every game to be like this, but theyre doing it right. Well take it.” The Cubs recovered after closer Hector Rondon blew a three-run lead in the ninth, earning their first four-game winning streak since last July 6-9. Rizzo also had a two-run double in the eighth and Jason Hammel pitched seven shutout innings. Junior Lake hit a leadoff single against Kevin Slowey (1-1) before Rizzo connected for his 12th homer. It was Rizzos second homer in two days and the Cubs first game-ending shot since he connected against St. Louis on July 29, 2012. “I hit it up in the air and the wind was blowing, so you never know,” Rizzo said. “I knew I got enough of it. I was just hoping it would stay fair.” Carlos Villanueva (2-5) pitched two perfect innings for the win. Chris Coghlan and Nate Schierholtz each had two hits. Garrett Jones had three hits for Miami, which had won four in a row. Nathan Eovaldi gave up three runs and six hits in 7 2-3 innings in his first career appearance against the Cubs. “I felt like I threw the ball well,” Eovaldi said. “Was able to use both sides of the plate, slider was good, and I was able to throw my curveball a lot today for strikes.” The Marlins had just two hits in extra innings. Their last nine hitters went down in order. “Other than the ninth inning, you know, mounting the rally, which was good to see, we put together some nice at-bats and gave ourselves a chance to play some extras,” manager Mike Redmond said. “But then really in the extra innings, we didnt get anything going at all.” Hammel allowed six hits, struck out eight and walked one, extending his scoreless streak to 14 innings over his last two outings. The right-hander, who could be an attractive trade target for a contender at next months deadline, is 2-1 with a 1.42 ERA over his last four starts. “I did my best to stay in my counts so I could be advantageous throwing the heater,” he said. “I was kind of pitching backwards today. Slider early and fastball late.” Hammel was in line for his seventh victory, which would have matched his total from last season, before the Marlins rallied in the ninth. Justin Bour had a run-scoring grounder before Reed Johnson, another pinch hitter, sliced a tying, two-run single into right-centre against one of his former teams. Bour was initially ruled safe on his grounder to first, but the call was overturned when a replay review showed Rondon got his foot on the bag in time. There was another overturned call in the 10th inning when Schierholtzs diving try for Casey McGehees sinking liner to right was initially ruled a successful catch. Eovaldi retired his first 14 batters before Schierholtz reached on a two-out single in the fifth for his 500th career hit. Coghlan followed with a liner to right for his third RBI in 24 games this season, scoring Schierholtz all the way from first for a 1-0 lead. While Eovaldi was shutting down the Cubs, Hammel had to work hard to keep the Marlins down. Miami got at least one hit in each of the first five innings, but Hammel was at his best when the Marlins had runners on base. “Im very confident in my stuff right now and having a good game plan,” Hammel said. NOTES: Cubs C John Baker returned to the lineup after taking a foul ball off his throat during Wednesdays 5-4 victory over the Mets. Renteria said Bakers vocal cords are “inflamed” and the catcher is taking medication. “Theres nothing there that we can actually do to hurt it any more or any less,” Renteria said. … Blackhawks forwards Patrick Sharp, Bryan Bickell and Michal Handzus and defenceman Sheldon Brookbank took batting practice and threw in the outfield before the game. “The wind must be blowing in because I didnt get one out,” Sharp said with a grin. “I think Bicksy hit one off the wall.” … Cubs RHP Jeff Samardzija (1-5, 2.54 ERA) faces 37-year-old Marlins LHP Randy Wolf (1-1, 3.38) on Saturday. Téma: Obecná diskuze / career when facing the Blues The Toronto Blue Jays appear to be looking to upgrade their pitching staff, though theyre not tipping their hand too far. Speaking with reporters on Friday, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said that once pitcher Masahiro Tanaka signs with an MLB club, some moves could follow for Toronto. “I think once something happens with Tanaka, some things could break. Whether anything happens with us, nobody knows.” When asked what general manager Alex Anthopoulos and the Blue Jays management was looking for in the free agent market, Gibbons said they “may be looking at some different pitchers.” However he stopped short of saying the Jays need to bring in another player on the mound. “We like the group we have here, we said that all last year, we just didnt play as well as we expected to. As far as the talent we have and players on the field, were very satisfied. Everybodys looking for pitching, there are very few teams who are satisfied where theyre at.” As to whether or not the Jays will attempt to make a play for Tanaka, Gibbons said only that the Jays had looked in to him. “Theyre feeling around, seeing whats going on with him but I think most of the teams out there have at least put out some feelers on him. Hes going to make a lot of money, I know that.” Gibbons said he knows fans were disappointed by the teams 74-88 record and that the team must improve. “I expect us to be much better this year just with the guys we have, whether there are any more additions or not.” Gibbons did point out, however, that theres still time to make moves before the season begins on March 31. “Well see…there are still a couple months before the season starts. Were not sure whats going to happen,” said the manager. “I like this group, we like this group.” Julius Peppers Jersey. Téma: Obecná diskuze / commit to any decision one way or the other Ive never been a fan of opt-out clauses in contracts. The Dodgers two-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw who just signed a 7-year $215-million dollar pact, can get out after five years if he so chooses. Japanese star Masahiro Tanaka can escape from his seven-year $155 million dollar deal with the Yankees after four seasons. Zach Greinke and C.C Sabathia both have these kinds of deals as well. Its easy to see why the players and agents want them. If they truly grow to detest a city or an organization they can move on. If the player continues to perform at an optimum level, he can opt out early and get an even better deal, and from the agents perspective can set the market bar even higher for every other pitcher or player in the majors. However, there just seems to be something mercenary, and sort of having your cake and eating it too kind of feel about the whole thing. I can see player option years on contracts or club options or mutual options, but opt-outs just dont feel right. Talking about these kinds of clauses brings back memories of the deal the Blue Jays signed with Roger Clemens back in December of 1996. At the time, the four-year contract looked like an incredible coup for the Jays organization. They had lured one of baseballs all-time great pitchers — albeit seemingly fading a bit at 34 — away from the mighty Boston Red Sox. Not only that, but they outbid the Yankees for his services. Paul Beeston actually travelled down to Clemens home in Texas to personally deliver the sales pitch. Initially — at least based on Clemens stats, over two years — it was an incredible deal for the Jays. Clemens won over 20 games twice, captured the American League Triple Crown for pitchers both years and won back-to-back Cy Young Awards. Unfortunately, over the ‘97 and ‘98 seasons, the Jays finished a combined 24 games under .500 and attendance never really spiked the way you might have expected when Clemens pitched at home. Then there were stories that Clemens helped pushed for the ouster of Cito Gaston as manager late in the 1997 season, and when Cito was gone campaigned for Red Sox coach Tim Johnson to take over as skipper in 1998. All of that paled in comparison to the news that leaked out late in ‘98 about the exact details of Clemens contract. He had a five-point secret handshake agreement with Paul Beeston and the Blue Jays, as reported by Murray Chass in The New York Times. The key points included Clemens having the right to demand a trade two years into the four-year deal. He also had to approve which team he was traded to. He could also demand a trade to the Houston Astros at any point in the contract. The reason for that was there was a chance his agents Randy and lan Hendricks were going to buy the Astros and the “Rocket Man” really wanted to play for them. None of that transpired, but when news of this secret deal came out, the commissioners office was not impressed. The Jays were fined for entering into a secret deal that was against major league rules. Oddly enough by that time, Paul Beeston had left the Blue Jays and was working for MLB as the number two official below only the Commissioner himself Bud Selig. On Feb. 18, 1999, the Blue Jays ultimately did trade Clemens to the Yankees for Dave Wells, second baseman Homer Bush and lefty reliever Graeme Lloyd. Clemens went on to get his first World Series ring in ‘99 and got another in 2000, though Clemens embarrassed himself by throwing a piece of a broken bat across the path of the Mets Mike Piazza as he ran towards first base. The next time the Blue Jays offered an opt-clause to a pitcher it was legal, and all the “Is” were dotted and the “Ts” crossed. A.J Burnett signed a five-year deal with the Jays on Dec. 6, 2005 for five years and $55 million dollars. It was nine years after the Clemens signing, but Burnett was nowhere near the pitcher Clemens was and got more term and money. Unfortunately for the Jays, Burnett battled injuries in 2006 and 2007 and finished with identical 10-8 records. Finally in 2008 he pitched like an ace and wound up 18-10. But that was a contract year because in effect, since Burnett had the option to opt out of his deal after three years. He did just that and signed with the Yankees, helping them beat the Phillies in the 2009 World Series. I dont dislike the opt out just because of the Blue Jays experiences. No, its because it simply creates the impression the pitcher or player is just using that club as a springboard to a better deal with a perennial contender when the time is right. I hope this becomes a major battle ground when the next labour deal comes up in a couple of years. The Blue Jays opening home series is a three game set against the Yankees to cap the opening week of the season. Id wager we wont get to see Masahiro Tanaka though. The Yanks open the season in Houston and the best bet would be Tanaka would start the second game of the season after staff ace C.C Sabathia. That would mean Tanakas next turn would be at Yankee Stadium for the home opener against Baltimore. The lowest I could see him being in the rotation is number three. That would put him in line to start the finale in Houston and the second game at home against the Orioles. The 10-year deal the league and players agreed to that ended the 2011 lockout gave either side the right to opt out after six years. With the league projecting financial growth, there has been speculation that players will take that option in three years, especially since a new national TV contract will be in place by then. But Silver told a gathering of Associated Press Sports Editors that it was too soon to consider that. “Well always be prepared, but I have no expectation that theyre going to opt out. I mean, we havent had any discussions whatsoever about that possibility,” Silver said. “I think its premature, frankly, for either side to be making determinations about how well this deal has or hasnt worked, and I think especially given that their leader hasnt even been installed yet, which is something that they of course are freely acknowledging. So I dont really buy into sort of that speculation that theyre already planning to opt out or that were thinking about it.” The 2011 deal cut the players guarantee of basketball revenues from 57 per cent to 50, saving owners hundreds of millions in salary costs. They have seen the benefiit, with sales of franchises soaring, though Silver said there are still eight teams that arent profitable.dddddddddddd. The league sought a 10-year deal, much longer than players wanted, so the compromise was reached to allow either side to terminate it early. “Our leagues recently reported economic successes come as no surprise to the players,” NBPA acting executive director Ron Klempner said in an email. “That being said, we negotiated for the right to opt out of the CBA, and just as the owners will do, the players will consider our options at the appropriate time. Its way too early to commit to any decision one way or the other.” The players are still seeking a replacement for former executive director Billy Hunter, who was ousted last February. They said recently they expect to hire one by the start of next season. Meanwhile, owners met in New York last week and got an update on the CBA through what could be its midway point. “We presented sort of the facts as we know them so far under this agreement,” Silver said. “Is it working in ways we predicted, here are things that we would not have predicted under the agreement, heres the amount of free agency movement were seeing, heres how its working economically for the league. MELBOURNE, Australia — Filip Peliwo missed his bid to become the first Canadian to win a junior Grand Slam title, losing 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to local Luke Saville in the Australian Open boys final on Saturday. The 17-year-old from Vancouver spent exactly two hours on court in a tight duel with his teenaged rival, who he beat for his first major title in the Traralgon junior event 160 kilometres from Melbourne only a week ago. Peliwo fired three aces and 21 winners while committing 27 unforced errors. “Luke played a great match, came out on top and played the better match,” said Peliwo. "I played good tennis overall, but I didnt really do anything extraordinary. “I wasnt returning quite as well as Id like to, and a couple of bad games on my serve cost me. I wasnt able to break enough, and thats basically it, a couple of bad points.” Showcased on the Australian Opens main court — Rod Laver Arena — Peliwo went down a break in the second game of the match and was never able to close the gap on his rival, as Saville converted on his first set point after 32 minutes. But Peliwo retaliated by winning the second set with a break of the Australian in the second game. Peliwo managed a 3-0 lead before his opponent clawed back the break for 2-3 on a double-fault. He broke in the last game of the set to level. Saville took a 1-0 lead on a break in the opening game of the third and finished with an untouchable service winner. Peliwo, who turns 18 on Monday, lost his first match of the 2012 season after 11 consecutive victories. Hes ranked No. 7 in the ITF junior rankings. He said that even with the end of his winning streak, his season is off to a remarkable start. “Its definitely my best streak of my career, besides the loss here Im very satisfied with my performance.” Peliwos the first Canadian since Vancouvers Philip Bester and Peter Polansky of Thornhill, Ont., in 2006 to reach a junior Grand Slam singles final. “Thanks to the team back home in Canada, they did a lot of work and it paid off for the most part,” said Peliwo. “I had so much support from back home form those who support Canadian tennis.” Peliwo trains a the National Tennis Centre in Montreal. cheap china jerseys. Woods caused the biggest sensation of the week Wednesday afternoon simply by driving his silver SUV into the parking lot at Valhalla. He has never arrived so late for a major championship and had so little time to prepare — just nine holes at Valhalla, which he had not seen since winning the PGA Championship in 2000. But at least hes playing. That much was in doubt Sunday when he withdrew from the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational because of back pain that made it a chore to switch out of his golf shoes. Woods said he suffered a pinched nerve, but that it was not at all related to back surgery he had March 31 that kept him out of golf for three months. He said his trainer adjusted the area above the sacrum. “Once he put it back in, the spasms went away,” he said. “And from there, I started getting some range of motion.” The latest injury occurred when Woods tried to play a shot from just above a deep bunker on the second hole at Firestone, and his momentum caused him to land hard in the sand. He kept playing, and hit some horrific shots before deciding to withdraw after a tee shot on the ninth hole. That was only his third tournament since his return from surgery, leading to concern that he might be done for the year. “It was a different pain than what I had been experiencing,” Woods said. “So I knew it wasnt the site of the surgery. It was different and obviously it just the sacrum.” His arrival put some life into what had been an ordinary week. Dozens of cameras captured Woods putting on his shoes with ease at his car. He got a big cheer just walking onto the practice range and the crowd was six-deep down the first hole, about like it was for the Ryder Cup at Valhalla six years ago. In the nine holes he played with Steve Stricker, Davis Love III and Harris English, Woods looked the same as he did last week. He drilled his driver down the first fairway. He badly pulled his tee shot on the third hole. It was a mixture of good and bad, about what can be expected from someone who has played only nine rounds in the last five months. “Nothing great,” Woods said. “Its only Wednesday.” Woods tees off Thursday alongside Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington. He simply said, “Yes,” when asked if he expected to win, which seemed to be a tall order considering his return from surgery. Woods missed the cut by four shots at the Quicken Loans National, had his worst 72-hole finish in a major at the British Open and was in the middle of the pack at Firestone when he withdrew.dddddddddddd. Barring a victory, this likely will be his last tournament for at least six weeks. Woods is not eligible for the FedEx Cup playoffs, and he hasnt given U.S. captain Tom Watson much reason to pick him for the Ryder Cup. Woods said he would have to “play well” to give reason for Watson to take him. “Thats the only thing I can control,” Woods said. “Try to go out there and win this event. Thats all Im focused on.” Watson has said he wanted Woods on the team if he was healthy and playing well. About the time Woods arrived at the course, Watson was successfully dodging questions about his chances of making the team. “Its speculation whats going to happen,” Watson said. “I cant tell you whats going to happen with Tiger.” The excitement over his arrival was sure to be tempered by the reality of the task ahead. Not only has Woods gone more than a year without winning — and six years since he last won a major — Rory McIlroy has replaced him as the overwhelming favourite. McIlroy went wire-to-wire at the British Open, then rallied from a three-shot deficit to win the World Golf Championship at Firestone. Sergio Garcia was a runner-up both times. Garcia, who went 0-3 playing in the final group with Woods at three majors, was asked about similarities between the two. “When they are both at their best, to me it seems like Rory is less afraid of hitting driver,” he said. “And when hes hitting it as well as hes hitting it now, hes hitting it very far and quite straight. So its a little bit of an advantage at that point.” Woods might have lost his advantage from being a past champion at Valhalla. He missed the Ryder Cup in 2008 while recovering from knee surgery, and course architect Jack Nicklaus has made plenty of changes, particularly on some of the greens. Woods spent much of his time chipping from collection areas that werent around 14 years ago. “Its a totally different golf course than what I played in 2000,” he said. “The greens are all different. I have my book from 2000 — its useless. Theres some new things that we have to learn out there.” With that, he headed to the back nine to walk the remainder of the course with his putter. He had 15 hours before teeing off in the final major of the year. ’ ’ ’ |

PETERSBURG, Florida – Drew Hutchison meant business when he arrived in Dunedin for spring training. He had a point to prove: hes back, and hes not worried about his surgically repaired elbow, as he enters what he hopes will be his first full season in the major leagues. “I expected make the team and now Im ready to go perform,” said Hutchison after his final Grapefruit League start on March 27. Manager John Gibbons and pitching coach Pete Walker rave about Hutchisons poise. They love his mound presence. Theyve been thrilled with his bounce back from Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery dating back to his appearances in the Arizona Fall League. Hutchison, a command and control pitcher, routinely pumped his fastball to the plate at 92-94 miles per hour, painting the corners along the way. “We like him,” said manager John Gibbons. “Hes got a chance to be a real good one. Ever since he had the Tommy John hes thrown better than he was.” Results in spring training often dont matter. With Hutchison, they did. He was competing for a roster spot. He needed to show the Blue Jays he was healthy and could be consistently effective. As a young player, just 23 years old, with options, he needed to drastically outperform veterans who were out of options. He accomplished all that with a 1.80 ERA and 0.800 WHIP in four Grapefruit League starts, and gets the nod in Tuesday nights second game of the season-opening series in Tampa Bay. Not that it surprises him. “I thought Id come into camp and do exactly what I did,” said Hutchison. “Thats my expectation levell and thats what I feel I would be able to do.dddddddddddd” Hutchison often repeats variations of the word “expect.” He has high expectations of himself, he expects to succeed; hes expecting a long and healthy career. He speaks with supreme confidence but without a hint of arrogance. Its all matter of fact. “I dont understand, at least from my perspective thats just the way Ive approached things and thats the way Ive always been,” said Hutchison. “I expect that out of myself and now its time, spring trainings over and its time to go perform and win because thats what its all about.” Whether Hutchisons approach translates into a successful season will be known only with the passage of time. Gibbons and Walker are looking for someone on which they can rely. The club has a reasonable idea of what to expect from R.A. Dickey and Mark Buehrle. It isnt clear what the Blue Jays will get from Hutchison and Brandon Morrow, both because of their respective injury histories and because neither has shown the ability, yet, to be a front-line starter over the course of a full season. “Hes a pitcher,” said Gibbons. “It takes effort for him but hes kind of an effortless type guy. I think hes going to have a big, big year for us. I really do.” Surely Hutchison must have had his doubts during the laborious rehab of his elbow? He insists he didnt. “Thats just the way Ive always been,” said Hutchison. “I just expect a lot out of myself and I expect a high level from myself. Thats not to try to be, you know, thats just how I am.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Obecná diskuze / thanks to two second half touchdowns from Pierce NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Pelicans and Louisiana-based Smoothie King have reached a 10-year agreement to rename the New Orleans Arena as the Smoothie King Center. Pelicans President Dennis Lauscha said such a deal had been a “gigantic” piece of owner Tom Bensons business plan since he bought the long-struggling small-market franchise from the NBA in the spring of 2012. “Finding a naming rights partner was key to the long-term financial viability of this franchise in this market,” Lauscha said. Benson, who has owned the Saints since 1985, purchased citys NBA franchise — formerly called the Hornets — for $338 million and has consolidated the headquarters and many of the business operations of both clubs. The hope was that with the two franchises sharing resources and cross-promoting one another, the region could better support two major professional sports teams. Officials with both the club and Smoothie King declined to release financial terms of the deal, which also gives Smoothie King an option for a 10-year extension. Smoothie King owner Wan Kim said sponsoring an NBA arena in New Orleans helps his company demonstrate its commitment to the community where it is based while promoting its brand globally. Smoothie King, founded in suburban New Orleans in 1973, has 674 locations in 31 states and in Asia, and is looking to expand both nationally and overseas, Smoothie King President Tom OKeefe said. Of 30 NBA cities, 21 currently have Smoothie King franchises, he said. The arena is officially being renamed on Thursday, in time for next weeks NBA All-Star festivities in New Orleans. Kim, a native of South Korea who attended college and business school in the United States, bought the company in July 2012. He said he initially considered moving its headquarters to Atlanta or Dallas. “I started to realize a lot of people who live in New Orleans, for them, its very difficult to leave the city,” Kim said. "Its a very different city. Its very unique, culturally, and I did start to see why people didnt want to move. “At the same time, I did feel our root is here and I shouldnt give up on that,” Kim said. “Not only did we decide not to move out, but we are pretty much telling you (with the naming rights deal) that our group is here and we are sticking with it.” As part of the agreement, Smoothie King will be airing commercials during Pelicans broadcasts, as well as sponsoring pregame and postgame segments. The companys smoothies will also be available at concession stands around the arena. Team officials said there were “two or three” other candidates for a naming rights deal, but that Smoothie Kings interests seemed most aligned with the Bensons goals of promoting the business climate in his home state. “Theres no more perfect story to say how businesses can root themselves in New Orleans and grow,” said Rita Benson LeBlanc, Bensons granddaughter and a part owner of the Pelicans and Saints. She added that the agreement is “a testament to how New Orleans has recovered (from Hurricane Katrina) and how Louisiana is redefining itself as an economic development engine.” The deal might have been completed before this season began, but because Smoothie King products contain nutritional supplements, NBA rules required that all of the companys products be tested to ensure there were no banned substances. LeBlanc said that process took about eight months. “We couldnt have any question as to what are the contents of the products that Smoothie King actually offers,” LeBlanc said. wholesale nfl jerseys. Harris had 65 yards rushing for the Lions offence and helped provide a nice compliment to the Lions aerial attack. Veteran kicker Paul McCallum connected on four of his five field goal attempts, including his longest of the day, a 34-yarder, which gave the Lions a two-score lead late in the fourth quarter. Blue Bombers quarterback Buck Pierce struggled early in the game. The former Lion was intercepted by linebacker Anton McKenzie in the first quarter. In a matchup of the CFLs top two defences, points proved hard to come by, especially for the Blue Bombers. Lulay continued to capitalize off the solid field position provided the BB.ddddddddddddC. defence, helping the Lions to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. Pierce settled down after his early interception and helped the Bombers get into field goal range twice in the first half, with kicker Justin Palardy making good on both attempts. The Bombers fought hard, but trailed 14-6 at half-time. A 41-yard punt return by defensive back Jovon Johnson in the third quarter gave the Bombers their best field position of the day and led to Palardys third field goal of the game pulled the score to 14-9. The Lions quickly moved in position to respond with a field goal of their won, but McCallum clanged his 48-yard attempt off upright. When B.C. got the ball back, Lulay directed the offence back onto Winnipegs side of the field, helped by a 15-yard penalty on Odell Willis for a horse collar tackle. The drive set up another field goal kick from McCallum and this time the veteran made good on the 22-yarder. “Travis was a little bit better with his throws [in the second half],” remarked Buono. "He was a little anxious. He did play with a pulled groin and I think that affected his throwing. “[Travis] has been a warrior all year and he didnt let it affect him. He made some great plays and some great throws when it counted.” Lulay went deep near the end of the third quarter, finding Johnson for a 66-yard strike. The touchdown was Johnsons first of his career and helped swing the momentum back into B.C.s favour. Bruce was the recipient of another Lulay touchdown pass, giving the Lions a healthy 31-9 lead in the fourth quarter. “We started out slow in the first half, but we kept our composure, took a deep breath and in the second half came out and stuck together, put some drives together, and we did it,” said Bruce. The Blue Bombers mounted a comeback late in the game thanks to two second half touchdowns from Pierce to Greg Carr and Terrence Edwards, respectively, but time ran out on the East representatives. This was the third time the two clubs played this season, with the Blue Bombers having emerged victorious in the first two contests. Both games took place early in the season and the Lions were clearly a different team this time around. Coming off of a 30-17 defeat at the hands of the Bombers in Week 7, the Lions clawed back from their 1-6 start to win all but one of their next 13 games, including Sundays Grey Cup victory. ’ ’ ’ |

Lions quarterback Travis Lulay, the leagues Most Oustanding Player, found Kierrie Johnson and Arland Bruce for touchdowns in the second half helping the Lions to a 34-23 victory over the Blue Bombers. Lulay was named Grey Cup MVP after he completed 21 of his 37 passes for 320 yards and two scores. The Lions pivot also added eight yards on the ground. “I missed a few throws that I havent missed in a while, especially in the first half, and that unfortunately ended some drives. But its a championship game, and youve just got to keep on fighting and in the end its feels pretty sweet,” said Lulay. The Lions are the first team in CFL history to start the season with five straight losses and go on to win the Grey Cup and they did so in impressive fashion. They also accomplished the feat on home soil, the first time a team has done that since the Lions in 1994. “This is so special to win it at home – it feels amazing,” stated wide receiver Geroy Simon. “To come from where we came from and win the Grey Cup, its the best feeling in the world.” “Its been a tough, tough journey for this football club,”said head coach Wally Buono, who took home his fifth Grey Cup as a coach. “Im extremely proud of the players, the coaches, the whole organization. Téma: Obecná diskuze / first career shootout attempt as the Philadelphia Englewood, CO (SportsNetwork.com) – The Denver Broncos have picked up the fifth-year option on the contract of linebacker Von Miller, which keeps the 2011 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year under team control through 2015. Miller is slated to earn $9.754 million in 2015, the final year of his rookie deal, though the salary is guaranteed for injury only. The move was not unexpected, as the 25-year-old has emerged as one of the leagues premier pass rushers since being taken by Denver with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2011 draft. Miller racked up 11 1/2 sacks as a rookie, then tallied 18 1/2 along with six forced fumbles while earning first team All-Pro honors in his second season. He is coming off a difficult 2013 campaign, however, as he sat out the first six games for violating the NFLs substance abuse policy and missed the entire postseason after tearing his ACL in late December. Téma: Obecná diskuze / was delayed 10 minutes at the start Its a case of same again for Vancouver Whitecaps. After a successful switch in formation for last weeks home win over Houston Dynamo, Caps head coach Carl Robinson is expected to keep the same lineup for their match against Colorado Rapids at BC Place (Saturday at 3:30pm pt live on CTV BC). We have seen many good qualities from Robinson in his opening months as a rookie head coach, the latest being just last week when he showed a willingness to change. The Whitecaps had played his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation in the opening three matches, but needed to find a way to get the best out of forward Kenny Miller and also Chilean midfielder Pedro Morales. So Robinson made a switch, and the diamond midfield worked well as the Whitecaps won 2-1 against the Dynamo to keep their unbeaten start to the season alive. Theres little doubt about the star of the show last week – Morales was magnificent, especially in the first half. The Designated Player was everywhere, making the most of the freedom afforded him as a central attacking midfielder, showcasing his full range of ability, highlighted by his sublime passing. A cross-field ball driven between three Houston players was the top moment for me, but his first-time cross to the head of Andy OBrien, who then set up Jordan Harvey for the first goal, was very close behind. Morales is a difference maker that the Whitecaps have been craving for some time. He excites the crowd and makes those around him more effective. His influence on games will be key to deciding how successful the Whitecaps will be this season. Another big factor will be the depth of the Caps squad. They have assembled a quality group of players that gives Robinson plenty of options and will be extremely valuable as the season progresses. It also gives him the flexibility to change both personnel and formation within games, something he has already shown he is not afraid to do. One of the positives of the 4-4-2 diamond is that Darren Mattocks and Kenny Miller are both able to play in their favoured positions up front. Miller was less effective when playing wide as one of the three attacking midfielders in a 4-2-3-1, but his experience alongside the youth of Mattocks is important for the Whitecaps and against Houston, the partnership worked well. Other positives last week included a strong performance from goalkeeper David Ousted, more excellent work from young Argentine Matias Laba in his role as a defensive midfield destroyer, and solid displays from both fullbacks Jordan Harvey and Steven Beitashour. Everything seemed to work against Houston. Now the Whitecaps look for similar success against a Colorado side that is 1-1-1 through its first three matches. They have scored five goals, but all of them have been a result of penalties, four scored by Vincente Sanchez, and one rebound after Deshorn Brown saw his spot kick initially saved. Being awarded five penalties in just three games sets a new MLS record, but finishing chances from the run of play is something the Rapids have been struggling with through the first three matches (1-1 at New York, 2-0 win home to Portland, 3-2 loss home to Kansas City). Colorado are expected to play a 4-2-3-1 formation, but Pablo Mastroenis team will be missing some key pieces in Vancouver. Former Toronto FC defender Marvell Wynne is suspended after a sending off in the loss at home to Sporting Kansas City a week ago, regular left back Chris Klute is injured, and there is also a question mark about whether veteran players such as Sanchez and Edson Buddle will play on the BC Place turf. Colorado finished three points ahead of Vancouver last season, beating the Caps to the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, although the Rapids exited at the first hurdle, losing their Knockout Round match against Seattle, 2-0. The Rapids have kept many of the same players who got them to the postseason. Spanish defensive midfielder Jose Mari is one of the new names likely to play in Vancouver as he returns from a one-match suspension picked up in just his second game in MLS as the Rapids beat Portland 2-0 at home a fortnight ago. Thomas Piermayr could make his MLS debut in defence after signing with the Rapids this week following a trial spell with the club. While most of the players are the same, there is, of course, a new coach. Mastroeni had a long and successful MLS career as a player and is now embarking on a new challenge. With two rookie coaches on the sidelines at BC Place, it will be an interesting tactical battle. The Whitecaps have equaled their best start to a season since joining Major League Soccer with eight points from their opening four matches, a win against Colorado would set a new high standard, and also lay a strong foundation ahead of back-to-back matches against LA Galaxy. I expect to go out there and … try to find a way to help my teammates.” Cabrera capped his big day with an eighth-inning homer, and the Detroit Tigers rolled to a 10-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. Cabreras two-run drive made him the ninth player to reach 2,000 hits before turning 31. “Miguel and I have combined for over 3,000,” said Brad Ausmus, the former catcher who is now Detroits manager. “Were a Hall of Famer, combined.” Rajai Davis and Torii Hunter also homered for the Tigers. Drew Smyly (1-0) relieved Anibal Sanchez after a fourth-inning rain delay and pitched three scoreless innings. Miguel Gonzalez (0-1) allowed seven runs and nine hits in 3 1-3 innings. Baltimore arrived in Detroit in the wee hours of the morning after a night game at home Thursday. The Orioles looked fine while scoring two runs in the first against Sanchez, but Gonzalez couldnt hold the lead for long. “Obviously, we were facing a lot of challenges today, including a few that I hope we dont have to face very often,” Showalter said. “When you are playing on 3 1/2 hours of sleep, it makes it tough, but thats what happens when you are playing so many day games at this time of the year.” Gonzalez allowed two doubles, a single and a walk and hit two batters in the second, allowing Detroit to score three runs. Rookie Nick Castellanos hit an RBI double and, after a run-scoring single by Ian Kinsler tied the game, the Tigers went ahead when Davis scored on a wild pitch. After singles by Castellanos and Andrew Romine to start the Detroit fourth, the game was delayed by rain with Davis batting. When play resumed, the Orioles left Gonzalez in, and Davis made it 6-2 with a three-run homer.dddddddddddd More known for his speed than his power, Davis had a chance to trot around the bases slowly this time. “That actually felt comfortable,” he said. “I wouldnt mind getting used to that.” Gonzalez allowed a solo shot to Hunter later that inning and was pulled. Cabreras RBI single in the sixth added another Detroit run, and his first homer of the season made it 10-2. “What else can you say about Miguel as a hitter? Eventually you run out of adjectives,” Ausmus said. “Ive only been here for a short period of time, and Im already running out of words to describe him.” Detroit won its first two games against Kansas City, and the series finale Thursday was rained out. The postponement caused Detroit to push its starting rotation back a day, meaning Smylys start Saturday would be skipped. The Tigers needed him Friday, as it turned out. Sanchez allowed two runs and two hits in four innings, walking three and striking out three. Smyly pitched out of a jam in the fifth when an unsuccessful replay challenge by the Tigers left men at first and second with no outs. The Orioles couldnt capitalize. Téma: Obecná diskuze / first four games of the series FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. – For Julio Jones, eight months away from football “feels like an eternity.” Jones was on the practice fields for the Atlanta Falcons organized team activities on Tuesday, but only for conditioning work. The star wide receiver said Monday his rehabilitation is progressing well but “extra precautions” have kept him from being cleared for practice. “I am ahead of schedule but were not pressing anything,” Jones said. On Tuesday, Jones was on the field with the team only for exercises. That came only after he had extra time with a trainer for stretching. Then he worked on running and agility drills as other players went through practice. Jones said he cant guarantee hell be able to participate in the start of training camp next month. “I dont know when Im going to get cleared,” Jones said. “Its out of my hands.” Jones recovery is crucial for the Falcons, who finished 4-12 last season after five straight winning seasons. Jones, a Pro Bowl pick in 2012, was leading the NFL in receptions in 2013 when he broke a bone in his right foot in a loss to the Jets on Oct. 7. He suffered a similar injury during his college career at Alabama. “It is a freak accident, breaking the same bone,” Jones said. The injury history makes it easy to understand why the Falcons have been cautious with the rehabilitation schedule. Even so, the long wait for medical clearance has been difficult for Jones. “It feels like an eternity, just not being out there with my brothers,” Jones said during a promotional appearance for Vita Coco, an all-natural drink he endorses. "Its been a very difficult process as far as that aspect of it but Im just going through the treatment and just being smart about the whole situation. “Were just being careful about the situation and making sure Im 100 per cent before I go out there.” Quarterback Matt Ryan said there is ample time for Jones to make up for missed time during OTAs. “Julio has been in the building pretty much every day this off-season,” Ryan said. "While he hasnt been able to be out on the practice field with us yet, weve communicated a lot. Weve talked a lot and certainly have watched film together and tried to work on things in the classroom so that when we do get the opportunity to be out on the field we can hit the ground running. “Our biggest thing, and coach Smith talks about it all the time, is getting to Week 1 with all our guys fresh and healthy.” White joined practice on Tuesday for the first time in OTAs. The Ducks went 4-0-1 against the Kings during the regular-season series, but a 3-0 win by Anaheim in L.A. on Jan. 25 marked the only encounter that was decided by more than one goal. The Kings enter this second-round series only days after earning a slice of NHL history by combing back from a 3-0 series deficit to eliminate the San Jose Sharks. Los Angeles completed the monumental comeback with its fourth straight win over the Sharks on Wednesday, taking the series with a 5-1 rout in San Jose. L.A. joined the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, 1975 New York Islanders and 2010 Philadelphia Flyers as the only teams to pull off the monumental comeback. After winning the franchises first Stanley Cup in 2012 and making it to the Western Conference finals last season, the Kings were already on the rest of the leagues radar before the comeback, but the rally against San Jose is another reminder how dangerous this team L.A. can be. Despite dropping the first two games in San Jose by a combined score of 13-5 and losing a home Game 3 in overtime, the Kings came back from the brink of elimination to survive and advance. “It was a result of us staying together as a group of guys. When youve gone to the top of the mountain with the same group of guys its a little bit easier when youre at the bottom to come up,” Kings captain Dustin Brown said. L.A. was the top defensive team in the league during the regular season, allowing an average of 2.05 goals per game. After getting torched for 17 goals in losing the first three games against San Jose, the Kings righted themselves and allowed the Sharks to score just five times the rest of the way. By the end of the series even the Kings offense was rolling. L.A. outscored the Sharks 12-2 over the final three games. The historic comeback was a total team effort, but it may not have been possible without Jonathan Quicks play in the crease. The 2012 Conn Smythe winner posted a save percentage of .963 over the final four games against San Jose and that number jumps to .979 over the last three contests. Over 57 career postseason games, the 28-year-old Quick boasts a 2.15 GAA and .927 save percentaage.dddddddddddd Including eight shutouts, the American netminder has held the opposition to one goal or less 21 times during his standout playoff career. While Quick is the clear-cut No. 1 in the L.A. crease, the Ducks situation between the pipes is murky to say the least. Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau made the controversial decision to go with rookie Frederik Andersen at the start of the clubs first-round series against Dallas, but veteran backstop Jonas Hiller was in the crease when the Ducks finally clinched in Game 6. Hiller will start in Game 1 against the Kings. While Andersen started all six games in Round 1, Hiller was called upon to replace the 24-year-old on two occasions, including the Game 6 comeback win. Andersen was pulled after allowing four goals on 12 shots in that final game and Hiller stopped all 12 shots he faced to earn the series-clinching victory. Hiller is 11-10 with a 2.24 goals against average and .936 save percentage in 22 career playoff appearances. Andersen went 3-2 with a 3.40 GAA and .892 save percentage against the Stars in a rough introduction to the NHL postseason. The Ducks almost were pushed to a decisive seventh game by Dallas if not for a furious comeback to win a road Game 6 in overtime. The Stars led 4-2 heading into third period before Anaheim scored twice in the final 2:10 of regulation and winning it 5-4 early in overtime. Nick Bonino scored two of the games final three goals to help the Ducks pull off the comeback. Bonino tied for the team lead with three goals in Round 1, but Anaheims best player in the series was Hart Trophy finalist Ryan Getzlaf. The star centerman notched three goals and four assists against the Stars despite missing Game 4 due to a lower-body injury. Getzlaf returned to the lineup in Game 5 no worse for wear and helped spark a 6-2 rout with a one-goal, two-assist performance. Getzlafs linemate Corey Perry also had a solid first round, notching two goals and five assists to match his centerman for the team scoring lead in Round 1. All told, the Ducks spread out the goal-scoring against the Stars with 13 different players hitting the net. In addition to Bonino, Getzlaf and Perry, forwards Mathieu Perreault and Devante Smith-Pelly also added multiple goals with two markers apiece. Perreault missed Game 6 with a lower-body injury and is questionable for the opener of this series. Boudreau also created a minor firestorm when he made future Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne a healthy scratch in Game 4. The move may have paid off, however, as the 43-year-old Finn, who is expected to retire after this season, posted two assists in Game 6 after notching just one helper over his first four games of the series. Brown, Jeff Carter, Anze Kopitar and Tyler Toffoli combined to score all seven goals for L.A. in the 2013-14 season series with the Ducks. Kopitar led the way with three markers and Brown added two. Perry paced the Ducks with two goals and two assists in the season series, but Getzlaf only had a goal and an assist over five games. Both of Boudreaus goaltending options fared well against L.A. this season, with Andersen going 3-0 with a 1.62 GAA and Hiller posting a sparkling 0.96 GAA to go with a 1-0-1 record. Quick was 0-2-1 with a 2.30 GAA in three games for the Kings. ’ ’ ’ |

The Florida Highway Patrol arrested Antonio Tarver on Saturday night after a traffic stop. Officials say the 45-year-old Tarver was held on $215,425 bail following his arrest on a warrant issued last June in Las Vegas. It was unclear whether he had an attorney. Tarver, who lives in the Tampa Bay area, was named in a criminal complaint filed in Las Vegas alleging that he failed to repay three casino loans totalling $200,000 obtained in July 2012 at the posh Wynn Las Vegas resort. Nevada treats written casino IOUs, known as markers, like fraudulent bad checks. State law lets prosecutors collect a 10 per cent processing and prosecution fee with any settlement. Most cases are resolved before charges are filed. Some are resolved when the amount owed is paid as bail. Jake Merback, the prosecutor handling the case in Las Vegas, said Monday he hadnt heard from Tarver representatives. Merback said authorities in Florida told him Tarver hadnt immediately posted bail to be freed. Tarvers professional career included 30 victories and six losses, and he won a bronze medal as a light heavyweight at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. Tarver played a heavyweight boxer in the 2006 movie “Rocky Balboa” and has served as a commentator for Showtime Sports Boxing. nfl jerseys china. – Inbee Park is back defending her No. jerseys from china. Grabner scored on a breakaway 3:53 into overtime as the Islanders defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 on Tuesday.NASHVILLE — Jeff Skinner is providing a big offensive boost for the Carolina Hurricanes. Skinner got his first career hat trick to lead the Hurricanes to a 5-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night. He has five goals in his past two games. Justin Faulk and Riley Nash also scored for Carolina, winners of its past two. Mike Fisher and Viktor Stalberg scored for Nashville, which completed a four-game homestand 0-3-1. Faulk scored the games first goal just 23 seconds after the opening faceoff with a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot that beat Nashville goaltender Marek Mazanec between the pads. “Any time you can establish good play or good momentum early in the game, let alone a goal, is always huge,” Faulk said. “You dont go into the game expecting to score on your first shift or your first shot on net, but obviously when you do that it kind of gives your team a little bit of a boost.” Nashville tied it at 50 seconds of the second on Fishers goal. Defenceman Victor Bartley fired a slap shot toward the Carolina net from the left point. Standing just to the left of the slot, Fisher tipped the puck over the shoulder of Carolina goaltender Justin Peters. Bartleys assist was his first point of the season. “Its been a long time since I had a point so that was definitely nice to get,” Bartley said. “Fisher did a great job getting on the net, and (Seth) Jones made a nice pass to me. We had some traffic and good things happened.” Less than two minutes later, Stalberg gave Nashville the lead at 2:41. Coming down the right side on a 2-on-1 break with Nick Spaling, Stalbergs initial shot was turned aside by Peters, but he skated around the goal and swatted it into the net with a backhand for his third goal of the season. Skinner evened the game at 2 at 6:11 of the second on a wrist shot from the right circle low to Mazanecs glove side. Carolina regained the lead at 11:51 of the second. Just out of the penalty box, Ron Hainsey intercepted a clearing attempt by Nashvilles Roman Josi leading to a 3-on-1 break for the Hurricanes. Hainsey found Patrick Dwyer, who made a nice pass to Nash for his second of the season. &quuot; That third goal, it was just a blatant turnover," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said.dddddddddddd “That changed the whole game right there. It got them excited and it got us on our heels again.” Nashs score snapped a 19-game goal-scoring drought. Skinners second goal came on the power play at 19:08 of the second when he ripped a slap shot from above the circle by Mazanec. “The PP has sort of been struggling throughout the year, but I think the last couple of games we have sort of felt good about that,” Skinner said. “Its always nice to get goals late in the periods, coming into the locker room with that good feeling.” Carter Hutton replaced Mazanec in the Nashville goal at the start of the third period. Mazanec, who was named the NHLs Rookie of the Month for November, stopped just nine of the 13 shots he faced in 40 minutes. Skinner completed the hat trick at 17:53 of the third with an empty-net goal. “Hes shooting the puck,” Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. “Hes a goal scorer when he shoots the puck. He can score when he gets those opportunities, so hes working for it.” Carolinas Patrick Dwyer, Mike Komisarek, and Dryason Bowman all left the game with injuries and did not return. Notes: Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne underwent an MRI on Thursday, and the results were improved according to general manager David Poile. Rinne will continue limited physical activity for the next two weeks and, if all goes well, will be able to advance to more strenuous conditioning later in December. “In a nutshell, the doctor is happy with the progress,” Poile said. “What he is recommending is two more weeks basically of rehab if you will. December 20th is sort of a target date to hopefully get him into more strenuous activity leading back to playing.” … Nashville D Shea Weber missed his third straight game with an eye injury. The team announced that he would practice with the team Friday and return to the lineup as early as Saturday in Washington. … Mazanec has started Nashvilles past 12 games. Carolina C Eric Staal has points in three straight games. … The Hurricanes previous win in Nashville came Dec. 3, 2002. ’ ’ ’ |
