WATFORD, England — Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder expects to start against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in London despite a rib injury. Ponder, injured early in last Sundays 31-27 loss to the Cleveland Browns, emerged from the Vikings first practice in the U.K. on Wednesday confident that he will play at Wembley Stadium. “Its a little sore and its going to be something I will have to work through but I threw more than I thought I would be able to,” Ponder said. “Well wait to see how this week plays out, but my expectation and my hope is that I will be playing.” Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said Wednesdays practice would “be a big signal in what direction well have to go,” with a decision expected by Friday. Backup quarterback Matt Cassell also took snaps on Wednesday, and he is ready to step in if Ponder is unavailable to play. Ponder has been under pressure since the loss to the Browns dropped the Vikings to 0-3. The third-year quarterback has thrown five interceptions and two touchdowns for a 655.dddddddddddd9 passing rating, and has also lost two fumbles. “My confidence hasnt wavered,” said Ponder, who led the Vikings to the playoffs last season. “I have a great support staff around me with Adrian Peterson and the staff around me.” Peterson said he was always ready to give Ponder a pep talk, as he did when fans at Mall of America Field began jeering the quarterback during the Cleveland loss. “Hes bouncing back,” the Vikings running back said. “I told him, You know the business. You know how it goes. Just stay focused and continue to work. You know what to do.” Frazier said defensive backs Chris Cook (groin) and A.J. Jefferson (ankle) would sit out Wednesdays practice, but safety Jamarca Sanford (hamstring) would take part. Fullback Jerome Felton also is returning from a three-game suspension to provide an extra blocker in the Vikings backfield. The Steelers are also 0-3 going into the first of two NFL International Series games to be played in London this season. ’ ’ ’

The Vancouver Canucks have opted to keep centre Ryan Kesler. Despite rumours of great interest from NHL teams – including the Pittsburgh Penguins – the Canucks did not get the package they were seeking to trade the 29-year-old centre. The Livonia, Mich.-native has scored 21 goals and added 18 assists in 39 games with the Canucks this season. Kesler is currently in the fourth year of a six-year deal he signed with the Canucks prior to the 2010-11 season worth an average annual value of $5 million. One of the premier two-way forwards in the NHL, Kesler was the recipient of the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHLs best defensive forward in 2010-11. Kesler has spent his entire career with the Canucks, scoring 178 goals and 211 assists in 641 games. He was originally selected 23rd overall by Vancouver at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He has represented the United States on numerous occasions, including the 2010 and 2014 Olympic Games, winning silver at the former. He also won gold for the U.S. at both the 2002 Under-18 World Championships and the 2004 World Junior Hockey Championship. This week they discuss the NHL paying Wayne Gretzky, fighting in hockey, the “Group of Death” and the Buffalo Sabres disaster season.VANCOUVER — The goaltender who thought he had played his last game with the Vancouver Canucks was back skating with his old teammates Friday. Roberto Luongo, who spent all of last season expecting to be traded, admitted that it was strange to be back in Vancouver wearing a Canucks sweater again. “It was a bit odd flying in,” Luongo said after training with several Canucks at the University of British Columbia. “Just when you think youve seen it all, theres always something else. I dont know what the future holds but right now Im just focused on the season.” Luongo dodged the question of whether hes happy to remain a member of the Canucks. “Ive said all along I want to play,” he said. "Now I have that opportunity. “I want to take advantage of that and I want to win some games. I want to go as far as we can and hopefully win the Stanley Cup. Its a big year for me. Ive been sitting on the bench for a while and I want to show everybody what I can do. We all know its an Olympic year. I just want to make the best of it.” The Canucks goaltending situation has been one of Vancouvers most watched soap operas the last few seasons, with Luongo playing a starring role. The veteran said his goodbyes last spring after the Canucks were eliminated from the first round of the playoffs by the San Jose Sharks. The 34-year-old had been looking for a trade ever since Cory Schneider replaced him as Vancouvers starter. The general consensus was the Canucks would deal the three-time Vezina Trophy finalist over the summer. In a move that stunned many — including Luongo — the Canucks instead dealt the 27-year-old Schneider to the New Jersey Devils at Junes NHL draft for the ninth overall pick, which Vancouver used to take Bo Horvat. “It caught me by surprise,” said Luongo. “It takes a while. Its a process.” Vancouvers training camp officially opens Wednesday and Luongo said getting back on the ice to play hockey offers him some solace. “Thats where you are the most comfortable, when youre on the ice,” he said. "Youre playing the game and youre not thinking about stuff. “Thats why Im anxious to get training camp started … to get back to a regular routine and not worry about other stuff.” Luongos contract was a stumbling block in trying to trade him. He has nine years and US$40.5 million left on a deal that counts as a US$5.3 million salary cap hit. In a market once called a “goaltender graveyard,” Luongo has always been a lightening rod for criticism. He isnt even sure how local fans will react to his return. “To be honest with you I dont know how its going to work out,” said Luongo, who posed for pictures with several people after the workout. “Theres always going to be people supporting and theres going to be people not so supportive. It goes along with the territory. Ive realized that over the course of the year you cant really please evverybody.dddddddddddd” In his early days in Vancouver, Luongo could sometimes be cocky, even arrogant. Some days he was friendly, others aloof. He showed more maturity the last few seasons and was praised for the way he handled the situation with Schneider. The two goaltenders were supportive of each other and didnt want to be a distraction to the team. “Ive always been the same person,” said Luongo. "I just think a lot of people didnt see that before. “You learn and gain experience and learn to handle certain situations, whether they are a bit more complicated or whether you are thriving. You have to handle things a certain way. Maybe I have learned that a little bit more over the last couple of years. You have to practise it.” Luongo was silent in the immediate aftermath of the trade, leading to speculation he was angry. There were suggestions he might boycott the Canucks training camp. “No,” he said, dismissing the notion. “Thats not my style.” Vancouver general manager Mike Gillis went to Luongos home in Florida over the summer to speak with his goaltender. “We chatted,” Luongo said. "There was no animosity. “I dont know if it was as rosy as he painted it but we had a couple of laughs. They were just trying to do their job (trading Schneider). I dont hold that against them.” In another major move, the Canucks fired coach the easy going Alain Vigneault and replaced him with the fiery John Tortorella. “Hes going to bring a change to the dressing room,” Luongo said. "Not that Alain was a bad coach but sometimes change is good. “We will see what he brings. Hopefully it will spark the boys a little bit.” Last year as Schneiders backup, Luongo appeared in 20 games, including 18 starts. He had a 9-6-3 record, with two shutouts, a 2.56 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage. Luongos relationship with the Canucks may have been strained, but he sounded like a man ready to try and make things work on Friday. A strong start to the season will also help him gain a spot on the Canadian team defending its Olympic gold medal. “Ive been focused, getting ready for the last month or so,” he said. "I try to eliminate every distraction, just worrying about playing the game. “At this point in time thats all I really want to be focused on … making sure that I get back to where I was two years ago, establish myself as one of the best in the league. I dont want to squander an opportunity like that. I have a great chance to play and I want to take advantage of it.” Note: The Canucks also announced Friday that Pavel Bures No. 10 will be retired at Rogers Arena prior to Vancouvers Nov. 2 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 428 games with Vancouver, Bure collected 478 points, including 254 goals. He still holds the team record for most points scored by a rookie, with 34 goals and 26 appoints in 65 games. ’ ’ ’

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Ben Lovejoy realized his newborn daughter would be watching him on television for the first time, and the Anaheim Ducks defenceman promptly had the first multigoal game of his career. Yep, the Ducks have spectacular timing in just about everything they do these days. Lovejoy scored two goals in the first period, Jonas Hiller made 16 saves in his 10th consecutive victory and the Ducks beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 Friday night for their 12th win in 13 games. Lovejoy had scored just five goals in his 170-game NHL career, and he had just one goal in 40 games this season before firing two slap shots past Ilya Bryzgalov 2:43 apart late in the first period. With perfect setups from Saku Koivu and Cam Fowler, Lovejoy tied the club record for the most goals scored by a defenceman in one period. “It has to be perfectly in my wheelhouse, and those guys were able to find it,” Lovejoy said. “Its a very small sweet spot.” After scoring the fastest two goals by a defenceman in franchise history, Lovejoy thought about the serendipity: His wife, Avery, and their new daughter, Lila, were at home watching for the first time since Lila was born on New Years Eve. “We may have to keep pumping them out if I can keep scoring two goals a night,” Lovejoy said with a grin. Kyle Palmieri, Tim Jackman and Andrew Cogliano also scored for the Ducks, who improved to 16-0-2 at home this season and remained one point behind Chicago for the overall NHL lead. After giving up two early goals on broken plays, Hiller extended his franchise-record winning streak as the Ducks followed up their 11-1-1 December with their sixth consecutive win over the Oilers, who havent beaten Anaheim since April 2012. Even with little offensive help from superstars Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, who have combined for just one goal in the last five games, the Ducks keep steamrolling along. “They werent going as good as they normally do, and when theyre not going, you need people to pick up the slack,” Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. “You get help from everywhere. Thats why I think were a pretty good team.” The Ducks have the NHLs second-longest points streak at home to open a season in the last quarter-century, trailing only San Joses 20-0-2 start five years ago. Anaheim also won despite another awful effort by its power play, which went 0 for 8. The Ducks have just one man-advantage goal in the last 10 games, yet still rank third in the NHL in total goals. Boyd Gordon and Nail Yakupov scored in Edmontons fourth straight loss. Bryzgalov stopped 32 shots for the Oilers, who have lost 10 of 12 and are stuck at the bottom of the Western Conference. “We have been hanging around in games, but we always seem to find a way to blow a lead,” Gordon said. “We cant sit around and hang our heads. We have to find a way to get the job done.” The Oilers took the lead on their opening shift when Gordon flung a shot at the Ducks goal while getting checked facedown into the ice, and the puck deflected off Hillers stick 35 seconds in. Just 11 seconds later, Palmieri jumped on a turnover in the Edmonton crease and beat Bryzgalov. Edmonton capitalized on a mistake by Getzlaf, the Ducks captain, later in the period, with Yakupov getting goals in consecutive games for the first time all season. Lovejoy answered with his two goals, and Anaheim never trailed again. “Their second and third goals were almost identical,” Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said. “Same guy, same place. … I thought we had pretty good coverage. We had five guys below the puck, but we were just a split-second late getting there.” Jackman put the Ducks up 4-2 late in the second period, converting a pass from Nick Bonino in front. The workmanlike forward hadnt scored since joining Anaheim from Calgary in late November. Edmonton managed just eight shots in the final two periods. NOTES: Edmonton D Brad Hunt made his NHL debut, but the Oilers played without high-scoring RW Jordan Eberle, who apparently injured his knee a night earlier in San Jose. Mark Arcobello and Ryan Jones also returned from lengthy injury absences. … D Bryan Allen and F Daniel Winnik were healthy scratches for Anaheim, with Winnik missing his first game of the season. Johnny Manziel, college footballs most entertaining player with the reputation for pulling off magical plays, was selected with the No. 22 overall pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night by the Cleveland Browns, who hope they have finally found their franchise quarterback. Manziel sat patiently in the wings at Radio City Music Hall, waiting nearly three hours for his name to be called as everyone from Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the leagues official Twitter account tweeted about him squirming in his chair backstage. Then the Browns, who made two earlier trades, made another one with Philadelphia and selected the polarizing and electrifying 6-footer. Manziel walked onto the stage to meet Commissioner Roger Goodell and rubbed his fingers together, a signature “money” gesture that endeared him to some fans and annoyed others. In Cleveland, some Browns backers celebrated Manziels selection like the team had just won the Super Bowl. Of course, the Browns have never even made it to the NFLs showcase event and havent won a title since 1964 — a golden anniversary that will arrive in December. But Manziel brings hope to a city that has witnessed little but losing since the Browns returned as an expansion team in 1999. Manziel now must back up the hype around him. “The team obviously wants to win and wants to win now,” Manziel said on a conference call. "Ive been a winner everywhere Ive been. Im ready to work extremely hard. " Manziels size scared away some teams, but he believes his playmaking skills translate to the pro game. “Im used to that by now,” Manziel said. “Ive been scrutinized and nitpicked. Ive proven it from my first year to my next and I always get better.” Manziel is expected to compete with starter Brian Hoyer, who showed promise last season before suffering a knee injury. Manziel brings an instantaneous buzz and national relevance to the Browns, who have made the playoffs just once since 1999 and have lost at least 11 games in each of the past six seasons. Cleveland is on its third coach in three years, but Mike Pettine is inheriting a team with potential and five Pro Bowlers on its roster. And now, hes got Manziel - and the circus that will come along with him. The Browns have to hope the No. 222 pick doesnt haunt them again.dddddddddddd Thats the pick they also used on quarterback Brady Quinn, whose first-round slide in 2007 was similar to Manziels drop, and they also drafted Brandon Weeden two years ago. He was released in March. Theres no doubt Manziel will help sell tickets and his jersey will be coveted by every young Cleveland fan. But what remains to be seen is if he can win. Earlier, as Manziel waited, the Browns made two trades and selected Oklahoma State cornerback Justin Gilbert with the No. 8 pick. With the first deal of the draft, the Browns moved down five spots and acquired Buffalos No. 9 pick and first and fourth-round picks next year. Cleveland then swapped picks with Minnesota, acquiring a fifth-rounder before taking Gilbert, who they plan to play on the opposite side of Pro Bowler Joe Haden. “Hes long. Hes fast. Hes explosive. Hes a playmaker,” general manager Ray Farmer said of Gilbert. “Hes got great arm length. Hes got the speed. Hes got the ball skills. I know some people have questioned his tackling. We cover like Browns, tackling was good, but it doesnt necessarily need to be great.” Gilbert scoffed at critics who say hes a weak tackler. “Ive heard it before,” he said. “Its something that doesnt bother me at all because I know I can tackle.” Gilbert wasnt sure the Browns were that interested in him until he was getting ready to head to New York. “Its a dream come true,” Gilbert said in a conference call. “I became friends with him (Haden) not too long ago and hes a great guy and Im looking forward to playing with him.” The 6-foot, 202-pound Gilbert had seven interceptions last season, returning two for touchdowns. “I pretty much can do it all,” Gilbert said. “Im an all-around cornerback.” Cleveland entered the most important draft in its expansion era with 10 picks, ample ammunition for Farmer, promoted when president Joe Banner and GM Michael Lombardi were fired in February, to add talent and depth to a team that went 4-12 last season and fired coach Rob Chudzinski. During the winter, the Browns, who entered the draft with five of the first 83 picks, did an exhaustive study on quarterbacks with Louisvilles Teddy Bridgewater reportedly emerging as the top candidate. In the end, Manziel was their man. ’ ’ ’

PHOENIX — Cornerback Patrick Peterson says hes confident he will get a new contract with the Arizona Cardinals. He just doesnt know when. The Cardinals and his agent are in the early stages of negotiations, Peterson said, with no timetable on reaching an agreement. One thing for sure — it will be a big deal. Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman just signed a four-year, $57 million contract with $40 million guaranteed. Peterson, a two-time All-Pro selection who has made the Pro Bowl in each of his three seasons in the NFL, wouldnt say whether his contract should be bigger than Shermans. But Peterson said he “kind of” had a smile on his face when he saw the terms of Shermans deal. He spoke Monday to announce a drive by his Patrick Peterson Foundation for Success to provide help to low-income and inner-city youth to have the resources they need to succeed. The foundations goal is to help 30,000 at-risk Arizona youth by 2015. A fundraising event, with his teammates serving at a local restaurant, is set for June 9. Peterson said that from the moment he became a professional football player, he decided his charity work would be aimed at helping children. Peterson congratulated Sherman on his contract and said the cornerback position has become a valuable one. “I think cornerbacks are definitely worth the dollars that they get because now this league is a passing league,” he said. “You need that shutdown corner to lock down one side of the field, or like myself, go out there the entire field.” Rather than play one side on defence, Peterson goes from side to side to defend the opponents best receiver. His skill and worth to the team may well drive his contract higher than Shermans. The Cardinals just picked up the option on Peterson for 2015, and hes not sure any deal will get done before the coming season. He knows the Cardinals are eager to keep him, though. “I think Ill be here for a while,” Peterson said. “Thats a definite guarantee, Ill be here for a while.” Coach Bruce Arians has said he wants to ease up on Petersons punt-return duties, and there is less chance he will be used on offence. Peterson tied an NFL record by returning four punts for touchdowns as a rookie but has not done it since. He said hes “cool” with Arians moves. “At the end of the day, I believe coach wants to put me in the best position that he can to keep me healthy, for one, and be successful,” Peterson said. “Teams are starting to game-plan against me. Youve got teams kicking it to the sidelines, not kicking it as deep as they did the week before.” Peterson likes the look of the secondary with the addition of cornerback Antonio Cromartie and last weeks selection of hard-hitting safety Deone Bucannon from Washington State, in the first round of the draft. Tyrann Mathieu, coming off knee surgery, is expected to fill the other safety spot with Rashad Johnson adding depth to the position. Peterson said he believes Cromartie “has a lot left in his tank.” “You hear a lot of talk Oh, can he stay healthy? Is his hip going to be OK?” Peterson said. “But talking to him he says this is the best hes felt since he first entered the NFL.” Bucannons addition drew a rave review from the star cornerback. “Im excited to see him fly around and knock off some chin straps — legally,” Peterson said. On a team dealing with a rash of injuries all season, Livingston has been one of the key figures in the Nets revival after a dismal start. Starting alongside Deron Williams with All-Star guard Joe Johnson sidelined, Livingstons seventh steal of the night with 5.8 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter helped sealed Brooklyns win 108-102 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night. “Ive been on the wings obviously guarding some of the better scorers, but just trying to be active, be disruptive and help my teammates,” said Livingston, who also had 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Paul Pierce scored 25 points and Deron Williams added 21 for the Nets, who stopped a three-game losing streak. The Nets saw their first big lead of the night, a 15-point advantage, go to waste in the first half as Philadelphia managed to take a 44-37 late in the second quarter before Brooklyn answered back with a 17-5 run to head into the half with a 54-49 lead. Brooklyn then seemed like it was about to run away with the game with a strong start to the third quarter, relying on its defence to force some key turnovers. After a bad pass turnover by Philadelphias Tony Wroten, Livingston found Williams for a 3-pointer that made it 78-59 with 4:21. Trailing 84-69 to start the fourth quarter, the 76ers made nine of 10 shots and James Andersons 3-pointer made it 104-102 with 22 seconds left. Pierce, who made all 14 free throws, hit a pair after Michael Carter-Williams fouled him to increase Brooklyns lead to 106-102 and Livingston sealed the victory by intercepting Carter-Williams pass, Philadelphias 26th turnover of the night, and converting a pair of free throws to put it away. Livingston has come a long way since that awful knee injury almost seven years ago as a 21-year-old with the Los Angeles Clippers. In 45 games for the Nets, the 6-foot-7 point guard has averaged 7.8 points and 3.1 assists over 24.6 minutes. As a starter, hes logged 29.2 minnutes in 23 games, posting 9.dddddddddddd points, 3.0 assists and 1.3 steals per game, showing flashes of the player that was supposed to be part of the Clippers future before his injury. “Honestly, Im not trying to jinx it and think about it. Its a situation where I know where Ive come from, mentally as well,” Livingston said, adding that hes leaned on Kevin Garnett on how to manage his body. “I just want to continue my same confidence, continue to play with the same confidence and I give credit to (Nets coach) Jason (Kidd) as well because I talk to him every day. Just getting a chance to pick his brain gives me confidence and to see the confidence that he has in me as well.” The Nets had lost to division leaders Toronto, Oklahoma City and Indiana after starting 2014 by winning 10 of their first 11 games, but got back on track against a Philadelphia team that has lost 13 of its last 16 games. Carter-Williams scored 21 points for the 76ers, who have lost three straight. Wroten had 18 off the bench and Thaddeus Young added 17. The Nets scored 32 points off Philadelphia turnovers. “I think we had some careless turnovers. We tried to force some shots that led to turnovers,” Carter-Williams said. 76ers coach Brett Brown wished his team could have kept those mistakes down like they did in the final quarter, when they had just two turnovers. “Isnt that amazing? You actually get to shoot and have a chance to score,” the first-year coach said. Mirza Teletovic had 20 points off the bench, hitting 5 of 9 3-pointers. Johnson was held out of the game due to tendinitis in his right knee. The Nets were also without reserve forwards Andrei Kirilenko, who missed his last three games with a sore right calf, and Andray Blatche, who was out with a sore hip. NOTES: Former team minority owner and rapper Jay-Z and his wife, Beyonce, took in the game, sitting next to Russell Wilson, quarterback of the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. . Brooklyns 15 steals were a season-high. . Garnett recorded five blocks, making him the 18th player in NBA history with 2,000 career blocks. ’ ’ ’

MAMMOTH LAKE, Calif. - Shaun White skipped the Friday morning Olympic snowboarding qualifier to get some needed rest, a calculated risk considering the two-time Olympic gold medallist still wasnt assured of a spot in Sochi for his signature event. Two thrilling trips down Mammoth Mountain later in the afternoon all but solved that problem. Oh, and they sent a message too. The sports greatest ever is still on top of his game. In fact, hes building on it. Soaring through the California air looking very much like someone intent on making history, White dominated the afternoon session, posting a score of 98.6 to move closer to one of the four spots on the U.S. Olympic halfpipe team. Even better, he did it while landing the latest wrinkle in his ever-expanding repertoire. White nailed a frontside double-cork 1440 in competition for the first time during his second run, a trick he spent the run-up to Sochi obsessing over. The payoff came in the middle of his run as he packed four full twists and two flips inside in one physics-defying leap. Not bad considering a needed win was already assured. White posted a 97 during his first run, which included his usual double McTwist 1260. The new skill adds half a rotation, which he says changes it completely. Maybe, but the results havent changed a bit. White pumped his fists when his score was posted in a mixture of relief and joy. “I was treating it like an Olympic event, which it is,” White said. “I wanted to up my score. I wanted to do something under pressure … Im happy I landed it.” It also avoided any second-guessing after White decided to skip the morning event after a busy Thursday in which he wiped out during a slopestyle qualifying event to return to the top of the hill hours later and win, securing a berth on the U.S. Olympic slopestyle team in the process. “I just figured if I could pull it out yesterday I should be able to do it today and that inspired me to get up and make it happen,” White said. “Taking the morning off was the best call I think Ive made.” Looked like it. Scotty Lago, who won bronze behind White in Vancouver in 2010, thrust himself back into the mix for Sochi by finishing second. Taylor Gold wrapped up his seat in Sochi by finishing third. The U.S. is so stacked in the halfpipe making the Olympic team could be even more difficult than reaching the podium in Russia. Yet White left little doubt the chasm hes created between himself and the rest of the world hasnt moved much in the last four years. “I was really on the edge of my physical abilities,” White said. “I was so fatigued from slopestyle. But I did a run that Ive never ever in my career done, so Im happy. Ive got to push through all the way to Sochi. Ive just got to keep going.” The field behind Gold, White and Greg Bretz is a jumbled mess, with a half-dozen jockeying for the one spot that remains up for grabs. Its a field that now includes enigmatic Danny Davis after Davis pulled out a stunning win during the morning session. The 25-year-old was considered the snowboarder with the best shot at challenging White in Vancouver. Davis even beat White in a qualifying event barely a month before the games only to have his pelvis crushed in an all-terrain vehicle accident. Hes spent most of the last quadrennial trying to stay healthy. During a dynamic run, he looked more than healthy. He looked competitive. His 95.20 was enough to edge Gold by 1.2 points and give Davis hope of joining White in Sochi. “Ive had a rough four years of getting hurt and this year was about getting good at snowboarding again,” Davis said. “If I make the Olympic team, its cool because its another accomplishment in my life Ive yet to make.” Kelly Clark, who took gold in Salt Lake City in 2002, remained perfect by sweeping both womens events on Friday. The two-time Olympic medallist is guaranteed a spot on the team. The other three spots are a toss-up, though 2006 Olympic champion and 2010 silver medallist Hannah Teter bolstered her bid by finishing third and now has two straight top-four finishes. CLEVELAND — The Washington Wizards lost Nene to a knee injury, and then won the game with a strong effort on defence. John Wall scored 21 points, Bradley Beal had 17 and the Wizards beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 96-83 on Sunday night. Washington had a 66-63 lead midway through the third quarter when Nene departed with a sprained left knee. The Wizards then held the Cavaliers to 11 fourth-quarter points to return to .500 at 28-28 on the season. They also strengthened their hold on the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference standings. “Were a team right now thats just trying to play the right way and get on a roll,” Wall said. Nene had eight points, four rebounds and four assists in 21 minutes. He was coming off one of his best games with the Wizards, when he had a career-high 30 points in Saturdays win over New Orleans, including the game-winning dunk with less than a second left. Coach Randy Wittman said Nene banged knees with Spencer Hawes and will get an MRI on Monday. Luol Deng led Cleveland with 17 points and the injury-riddled Cavaliers lost for the second straight time after winning six in a row. The Cavaliers played without centre Anderson Varejao (sore back) and guards Dion Waiters (hyperextended left knee) and C.J. Miles (sprained left ankle). While the Wizards are in good shape to snag a playoff spot in the weak Eastern Conference, the Cavaliers are five games out of the final post-season slot. Kyrie Irving, who scored 15 points, admitted that hes looking at the standings. “You have no choice but to pay attention to it,” he said. “We want to accomplish something, but it starts with every single game. Time is of the essence right now.” Washington led 78-72 after three quarters, and then grabbed control in the fourth. Two baskets by Kevin Seraphin, who replaced Nene, and five points by Beal helped the Wizards build a double-digit lead before Trevor Arizas 3-pointer with a little over a minute left made it 96-81. “We felt bad when he got hurt, but during the game, you have to keep focused the whole way, which we did,” Seraphin said. The Cavaliers shot 49 per cent in the first half, but were 4 of 19 from the field in the fourth quarter. “The ball just seemed to stick in one area,” Cleveland coach Mike Brown said.dddddddddddd “It was almost like we played in an elevator at times. It wasnt crisp like it was in the first half.” Ariza scored 15 points and Marcin Gortat had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Hawes, playing his second game since being acquired from Philadelphia on Thursday, had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Cleveland. The Wizards used a 12-0 run midway through the first quarter to go ahead for good. Cleveland got within one point several times in the third quarter but never pulled even. The game featured two of the top young point guards in the league in Irving and Wall. Irving was the MVP of the All-Star game and Wall won the dunk contest. Wall ended the first half with a dunk and two 3-pointers in the final 1:21. He banked in a 30-footer to beat the halftime buzzer, giving Washington a 58-52 lead. Washington scored the first two baskets on a tip-in and a fast break after a bad pass by Irving, leading to a timeout by Brown just 31 seconds into the game. Browns message obviously worked as the Cavaliers took a 13-8 lead, but the Wizards scored the next 12 points to go ahead 20-13. The teams split the season series, with the road team winning all four games. “The last time we played Cleveland, we gave the game away,” Ariza said. “They played harder than us the last time. We did our best to prevent that from happening again.” Hawes made his home debut late in the first quarter. He had 13 points and seven rebounds in 14 first-half minutes. NOTES: While theres no timetable for the return of Clevelands injured players, Varejao, who has missed the last six games, was on the court at Saturdays practice. Tokarski, who had played in three games earlier in the regular season, allowed three goals on 30 shots in a 3-1 loss to the Rangers in his playoff debut on Monday. Therrien also sent a message to Thomas Vanek to pick up his game, rotating the struggling winger on the fourth line at Wednesdays practice with Michael Bournival, Daniel Briere and Brandon Prust at practice. Vanek, who has four goals in the second round against the Boston Bruins, has been held off the scoresheet in Montreals first two games of the Eastern Conference Final. The Canadiens had 41 shots on Henrik Lundqvist in Game 2, with none from Vanek. He had only one shot in their 7-2 loss in Game 1. Therrien told reporters not to read into it as it all could change again ahead of Game 3. “One thing, the (Tomas) Plekanec line needs to give us more,” he said. BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Sabres have placed recently acquired left wing Linus Omark on waivers as part of a series of moves made before the start of the NHLs Olympic break. Omark had two assists in 13 games with the Sabres. The 2007 fourth-round draft pick was regarded a disappointment after Buffalo gave up a conditional sixth-round draft pick in a trade with Edmonton on Dec. 19. Overall, he has eight goals and 32 points in 79 career games. Should he clear waivers, Omark would have an opportunity to develop with the Sabres AHL affiliate in Rochester. The Sabres also demoted two rookies, centre Phil Varone and defenceman Chad Ruhwedel, to Rochester. The moves were announced Friday, a day after Buffalo closed its pre-Olympic break with a 3-2 loss at Ottawa. Nike Roshe Run Orange Gray Mens Slip-On Shoes UK. LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Although Jason Collins played only 10 1/2 minutes in his first game with the Brooklyn Nets, his groundbreaking appearance meant the world to an entire segment of fans. Collins became the first openly gay player in the four major U.S. professional sports leagues, and Deron Williams had a season-high 30 points along with seven assists in a 108-102 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night. “I know that I can play in the NBA and it felt good to be out there tonight,” Collins said. “Conditioning-wise, I felt good. I dont think I got tired. It was a lot of fun to get back out on the court and set screens, hard fouls. Didnt take any charges tonight — thatll change. Ill get in position next time. As far as basketball timing, its going to take at least a couple of practices.” Collins signed a 10-day contract Sunday, nearly 10 months after his announcement on April 29 in Sports Illustrated. He had two rebounds and five fouls and didnt score. “Hes a basketball player. Hes been doing this for a long time, so that didnt change,” Williams said. “Maybe outside perception did, but inside this locker room it wasnt a big deal or a distraction. It was just another game for us. But he played huge for us. He made big plays on defence and was instrumental in this win tonight. I know hes been sitting around waiting for a job, and were excited about having Jason.” The 12-year veteran spent his first six-plus NBA seasons with the Nets and helped them get to the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003. This was the 35-year-old centres first NBA game since April 17, 2013, with the Washington Wizards. “In the society we live in, you know this was going to happen eventually,” teammate Paul Pierce said. “He is a guy whos going to be able to open the door for so many athletes — not only in America but around the world — to feel comfortable to come out and not feel embarrassed and feel like theyre welcomed in the sports world. It isnt about race, gender or sexuality. Its about being a part of a team and caring for one another. Thats all that matters at the end of the day.” Pierce had 25 points and seven rebounds, helping end an 11-game Nets losing streak against the Lakers. Pau Gasol had 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers, who never led and lost for the 24th time in 30 games with Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Xavier Henry all sidelined by injuries. Brooklyn played without Kevin Garnett, who was rested following Saturday nights 93-86 loss at Golden State. Shaun Livingston also didnt play because of a bruised tailbone that occurred in the first half against the Warriors. Marcus Thornton, who joined the club following Wednesdays trade that sent Reggie Evans and Jason Terry to Sacramento, has yet to see action for the Nets because of food poisoning. Nick Young played for the first time since Feb. 5, scoring 10 points in 19 minutes for the Lakers after missing six games with a fracture in his left knee. Nets general manager Billy King, in need of a post player after losing centre Brook Lopez for the season on Dec. 20 with a broken right foot — and failing to acquire another one before last Thursdays trading deadline — took a chance on the 7-foot, 255-pound Collins. Collins also has played for Memphis, Minnesota, Atlanta and Boston, where he was a teammate of Pierce and Garnett last season. Sunday was a homecoming, as he was born in Northridge, Calif., and played his high school ball at Harvard-Westlake School in North Hollywood. Collins new coach is an old Nets teammate — Jason Kidd. “Its just another step in the right direction. I think its the advancements weve made as people and will continue to make advancements,” Lakers point guard Kendall Marshall said. “As far as Im concerned, when I see him, I see him as a great defender — a guy that protects the paint and finishes around the rim. Thats all I see when Im out there. They needed help inside, and hes definitely going to be somebody who can help them with that.” Collins scheduled pregame press conference was delayed about 15-20 minutes while he was still getting his physical. He reported into the game with 10:28 left in the second quarter and the Nets leading 35-26 after the Lakers Nick Young made the first of his two free throws. The sellout crowd welcomed Collins with a nice ovation when public address announcer Lawrence Tanter announced his name, and he spent 4 minutes and 15 seconds on the court during his first stint while the Nets increased their lead to 16 points. “It was very inspiring, how he just came in and was ready. He did the same thing for us last year with Boston,” Pierce said. “You expect nothing but professionalism from Jason. Hes much needed around here with the lack of big men we have, especially with Kevin playing limited games in back-to-back moments. Jasons going to be big for us.” Kirilenko made his first start of the season in Livingstons place and had 10 points and 10 rebounds in 35 minutes. Rookie Mason Plumlee made his second NBA start in Garnetts spot, and the Nets didnt miss a beat — using 14 points by Pierce to build a 31-12 lead with 3:35 left in the first quarter. NOTES: Bad timing Dept.: ESPN had this game on its original schedule, but dropped it a few weeks ago because of the Lakers dismal record and Bryants injury. Team Canada head coach Brent Sutter announced late on Sunday that forward Felix Girard is the final cut for the World Junior Squad. Canada is now down to its 22-player limit, although but players wont be registered until Christmas Day. Changes could still be made as a result of a suspension or injury. Girard has four goals and 16 assists in 28 games for Baie-Comeau of the QMJHL this season. The 19-year-old reacted to the news as best as he could. “Well its tough, you know, its just a couple of days before the tournament starts, but its a decision they had to make,” said Girard. The forward was asked by TSNs Mark Masters if he could have done anything different along the way. “Im happy about how I did, but I wasnt in the plans and its okay. They have a great team. I respect their decision,” Girard said. On Friday, Canada cut forward Hunter Shinkaruk and defenceman Damon Severson. Sutter took 25 players overseas for the pre-tournament games with plans to cut three of them before Thursdays tournament opener. There are no cuts in goal, as Zachary Fucale and returning netminder Jake Paterson have already earned spots on the team. Sutter did not invite a third goalie to camp. Wins like Friday night will help erase those questions. Casey McGehee singled home the winning run with one out in the ninth inning to atone for a costly error and help the Marlins earn a rare road win, 7-5 over the San Francisco Giants. “I think were still trying to figure it out,” Redmond said. “If I had an answer to why were so much better at home to on the road, wed fix it, right? But these guys keep battling. They keep fighting. You saw that tonight. We dont quit. We keep grinding. We might make a few mistakes, but we keep going.” The Marlins made plenty of mistakes. They also made some big plays, too. Derek Dietrich and Christian Yelich homered, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia snapped an 0-for-26 skid by tying his career high with four singles to stop Miamis slide. The Marlins entered the game losers of six of their past seven games and a majors-worst 4-16 record away from home. They also are a league-best 17-5 at home. “Weve seen those games go the other way sometimes, especially on the road right now. It was huge for us to be able to stick in there and get that one,” McGehee said. Santiago Casilla (1-1) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, but couldnt escape trouble in the ninth. The right-hander allowed two baserunners before McGehees tiebreaking grounder to right field. “It just had eyes and got through the infield,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “Thats the way the game goes.” Garrett Jones added an RBI single off lefty Javier Lopez and made a leaping catch in the netting of the photographers pit in foul territory in the bottom of the ninth. Mike Dunn (4-3) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Steve Cishek converted his eighth save for Miami. Neither starter pitched well but did just enough to give his team a chance in the final innings. Henderson Alvarez allowed five runs — four earned — and 10 hits in six innings for the Marlins. He struck out four and walked none. Giantts right-hander Yusmeiro Petit, filling in while Tim Hudson rested his nagging hip, gave up five runs — four earned — on seven hits in five innings.dddddddddddd He struck out five and walked none. “I lost a little bit of my command in the first inning. I tried to stay close in the game,” Petit said. After wasting a 4-1 lead in a loss Thursday night to San Francisco, Miami moved ahead 4-1 again but rallied back late this time. The Giants had three RBI hits with two outs, including pinch-hitter Gregor Blancos bloop single in the sixth that tied it at 5-all. Blancos hit came after McGehee couldnt corral a grounder at third. “I still feel terrible. Alvarez battled through and it wouldve been nice to get him the win,” McGehee said. Defence — or a lack thereof — proved pivotal in the late innings. Redmond successfully challenged a transfer rule call in the fifth. After a replay review, umpires ruled Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton caught Hunter Pences fly in the web of his glove and dropped the ball trying to transfer it to his hand for a throw. Buster Poseys flyout to right later scored Angel Pagan, who had advanced to third on Stantons botched transfer. Stanton made up for the play with an outstretched catch of Michael Morses fly near the wall in the eighth. Pagan also made a spectacular over-the-head catch on Dietrichs deep fly for the first out of the seventh and held on after running into the padded wall in left-centre. And Casilla got pinch-hitter Ed Lucas to ground into a double play with the bases loaded to end the eighth. NOTES: It was the fifth time Saltalamacchia had four hits in a game. … Stantons career-high 17-game hitting streak ended after going 0 for 5. … San Francisco hosted “Metallica Night,” which included members of the heavy metal band playing the national anthem, drummer Lars Ulrich throwing out the ceremonial first pitch and singer James Hetfield announcing San Franciscos starting lineup. … RHP Tim Lincecum (3-2 4.78 ERA) starts for the Giants opposite Miamis RHP Tom Koehler (3-3, 2.57) on Saturday. ’ ’ ’

But in 2014, the Whitecaps will have a new coach, a new look and less attitude, starting with Saturdays season-opener against the powerhouse New York Red Bulls at B.C. Place Stadium. Watch the Whitecaps vs. Red Bulls live on TSN tonight at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. “Were all looking ahead with a cautious optimism,” Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi said before the team held its final pre-season practice Friday. The Whitecaps finished seventh in the Western Conference with a 13-12-9 record in 2013 after becoming the first Canadian team to make the playoffs the year before. New York, which features a star-studded lineup, finished first overall with a 17-9-8 mark. Carl Robinson, a former Whitecaps assistant coach, will try to excel in the top job after Martin Rennie was fired at the end of the last campaign. “Obviously, with a new coach coming in, theres going to be a transition, but hes had a full pre-season to work with a majority of the guys,” said Lenarduzzi. “And then, getting the guys that weve added over the course of the pre-season, therell still be I would think a required time for players to gel and for the newer guys to get to know Carl and his coaching staff and their teammates.” Robinson has brought in several new players from South America and Europe, including new designated player Pedro Morales, a Chilean midfielder who was signed earlier this week. “We dont want to put too many unrealistic expectations on him, but were hopeful that hes going to produce and well see results of that in goals and assists,” said Lenarduzzi. “But ultimately what were looking for from him is to bring out the best in players around him.” Other prominent newcomers include attacking Nicolas Mezquida and Sebastian Fernandez, who both hail from Uruguay, and Mattias Laba of Argentina, a designated player who was acquired from Toronto FC. Vancouvers acquisitions have paled in comparison to TFCs splashy off-season signings, but Lenarduzzi did not feel pressured to match them. “I dont think any team in the league feels the pressure to match $100 million spent on three players,” he said. As a result of the changes, the Whitecaps lineup features players from 16 countries, who bring diverse skill levels, backgrounds and languages. “Football is a global sport,” said Lenarduzzi. “The language barriers? I dont believe they are barriers. Obviously when you get on the field youd like to be able to communicate with your teammates. But really, if youre good players, your ability will do the talking for you.” Lenarduzzi is hopeful that Robinson, 37, a former Welsh international player who toiled in England and in MLS with Toronto and New York, will be able to get his message across. Known as a strong communicator, Robinson developed close relationships with players in his assistants role and, according to Lenarduzzi, succeeded in getting them to accept what they sometimes did not like to hear about their play. “Now that hes the head coach, hes the guy where the buck stops,” said Lenarduzzi. “So it wont be the same as it was the previous two years.dddddddddddd Itll be different. But Im encouraged that up until now hes maintained his willingness to communicate with the guys.” Lenarduzzi also likes the fact that Robinson stresses a possession-oriented, attacking style of play while still requiring the club to display a disciplined defensive structure, and “puts a premium” on young players. “We havent kicked the ball in anger yet, so were not getting carried away,” said Lenarduzzi. “We think weve got a good squad of players. But if he applies all of those things then I think weve got an opportunity to make the playoffs this year, which is really our objective.” The quest for a post-season berth became more difficult following the departure of striker Camilo Sanvezzo — who led MLS with 22 goals last season — to Queretaro of the Mexican League. Camilo angered the club by donning the Mexican teams jersey while he was still a Whitecap and a transfer was eventually negotiated. “The hope is that two players or, more than likely, three players will help pick up that (scoring) slack,” said Lenarduzzi. One likely source of more offence is striker Darren Mattocks, who had a disappointing sophomore season marred by injuries, inconsistent play and international absences that limited him to just three goals. Lenarduzzi also hopes to get “10-plus” goals from striker-midfielder Kekuta Manneh, a gifted 19-year-old scorer who was used sparingly in his rookie season but still found the net six times in only 764 minutes of action over 20 games. “What I dont think we want to do is heighten the expectations of Kekuta,” said Lenarduzzi. “Hes a very good player, and he proved that late last season.” Former Scottish international striker Kenny Miller will be expected to produce early as he plays on an unusual six-month contract that could see him leave the team in mid-season. “Kenny will need to do what he did the first half of last season and if thats the case, then certainly thats going to encourage us to keep him around,” said Lenarduzzi. Striker Omar Salgado, 20, the teams first-ever MLS draft choice who has missed most of the past two seasons with foot injuries, could also help make up for Camilos absence, depending on how much playing time he can earn after his long layoff. Ultimately, Vancouvers scoring prowess could hinge on Robinson, also a former Red Bulls assistant coach, who was not managements first choice to replace Rennie. “Im excited. I really am,” Robinson told reporters this week. “But Im trying to keep a calm head on my shoulders in (the dressing room) and in front of the guys.” Notes: The Whitecaps loaned five players, including seventh-overall 2014 draft pick Andre Lewis, to the second-tier Charleston Battery on Friday. Lenarduzzi said the Whitecaps made the move to ensure that Lewis, a 19-year-old midfielder from Spanish Town, Jamaica, gets plenty of playing time. Strikers Mamadou Diouf and Marlon Ramirez, midfielder Aminu Abdallah and defender Jackson Farmer were also sent to Charleston. … Vancouver beat New York in their lone meeting last season. The Whitecaps are unbeaten (1-0-2) against the Red Bulls in three all-time games. ’ ’ ’

Monique Lamoureux, Brianna Decker and Amanda Kessel all scored within 55 seconds in the first period as the United States romped to a 9-0 victory over Switzerland on Monday to all-but clinch a spot in the Olympic womens hockey semifinals. It was the quickest three-goal sequence in Olympic history, with the latter two coming just eight seconds apart. Kessel, Lamoureux and Kendall Coyne all scored twice for the Americans, and Molly Schaus made 10 saves in her Sochi debut. With a 2-0 winning record, the U.S. is in position for a spot in the medal round regardless of what happens on Wednesday in the game against Canada, the marquee matchup of the round-robin. Canada was scheduled to play Finland on Monday night in its last tuneup before the North American grudge match. Switzerland lost for the second time and likely is headed for a spot in the quarterfinals against one of the top two teams in the bottom-tier. Hilary Knight and Alex Carpenter also scored for the United States, which led 5-0 after one period and outshot the Swiss 53-10. Florence Schelling, who played at Northeastern, made 42 saves for Switzerland against Schaus, of Boston College, on the morning of the Beanpot finals where their schools will play for the mens hockey bragging rights of Boston. The biggest mismatch so far in the womens hockey round-robin was scoreless for half a period before Lamoureaux gave the Americans the lead and Decker added one 47 seconds later. Kessel got the puck off the ensuing faceoff, skated into the zone on the left side, passed the puck to herself off the boards to get around a defender and then cut in front of the net, where she beat Schelling. Lamoreaux made it 6-0 in the second period. In the third period, Coyne had a shot that convinced the goal judge to turn on the red light, but play continued until Kessel put the puck in the net a few minutes later. White Customized Limited Youth Jersey. Louis is going to get a chance to represent his country at the Winter Olympics after all. WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are taking that first letter in CFL very seriously, naming Canadian Mike OShea as their new head coach on Wednesday. He was recruited by former University of Guelph teammate and fellow Canadian Kyle Walters, Winnipegs new general manager. “Being Canadian is extremely important to me,” OShea said after he was introduced as the teams 30th head coach. But he admitted his nationality hadnt really crossed his mind as he accepted his first head coaching job. He was special teams co-ordinator with the Toronto Argonauts, also his home for most of his 16 years in the league as a middle linebacker. “Do I think it can help in certain situations? Absolutely. . . I am an extremely proud Canadian.” OShea succeeds Tim Burke, who was sacked after Winnipeg tied its worst record ever in the 18-game CFL this season at 3-15. Burke replaced Paul LaPolice in mid-2012 and no one has been able to hold the job for long in recent years. It was a point not lost on OShea, 43. How much time will he have to build a winner? “Thats one of the first questions I asked them,” he said. “I wanted to find out what their commitment level was. They are committed to this town, this province, this organization and theyre committed to winning. To me it was an easy choice.” Its been a busy week for the Bombers. On Tuesday they also named former quarterback Danny McManus and Ted Goveia as new assistant GMs to join Walters in rebuilding the team. Not that OShea likes to think of this as a rebuilding effort, which suggests a process that might take some time. He got a round of applause from the fans in the room when he made that clear. “I know what I believe and the only reason you start a season is to win a Grey Cup, so its my job as a coach (much clapping ensues) its my job as a coach to get people to buy into that.” Not long removed from his playing days, some may see OShea as to young and inexperienced to take on the role of head coach. That notion was quickly refuted by Argonauts safety and special teams player Matt Black, who played under OShea for the past four seasons in Toronto. “These people that dont think OShea is qualified are sorely mistaken,” Black posted on his Twitterr account.dddddddddddd “His players will sacrifice their bodies for him. Mark my words…” The Bombers havent won a Grey Cup since 1990, although their last appearance at the final isnt that long ago — 2011. One of the remaining big pieces to put in place is a starting quarterback for 2014 but OShea wouldnt comment at all on any suggestion Zach Collaros might be a candidate. The Argos backup is under contract and off limits as such. OShea did say he was a great guy. The Argos are having a pre-Christmas sale it seems with defensive co-ordinator Chris Jones named head coach of the Edmonton Eskimos just last week. The Bombers have now pretty well cleaned house after the Joe Mack as GM era, replacing their president, general manager and coach. OShea, a native of North Bay, Ont., spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach with the Argonauts. He was part of four Grey Cup winning teams, three as a player (1996, 1997 and 2004) and his first as a coach in 2012, leading a stalwart special teams unit for the Argos. OShea also won the CFLs Most Outstanding Canadian award in 1999. He described the kind of team he hopes to put on the field next season. “If I were going to envision how were going to win games, its gong to be defence and special teams. Its going to be hard-nosed but disciplined football. Theyre going to be hard-working guys, character players. Were going to do it the old-fashioned way.” Walters says like OShea, he wants the Bombers to become a team that wins consistently and the work starts right now. “Our No. 1 priority is to put a process in place that can ensure sustainable winning. And as Mike said you dont start the year with any other goal than winning the Grey Cup . . . and that will be our goal.” Several key members of the Argos took to Twitter to wish their former coach well in Manitobas capital. “Just found out that our Special Teams Ace is moving on and up!” posted star receiver and kick returner Chad Owens. “Proud and Blessed to have battled for you Osh! Def wont be the same!” Added receiver Andre Durie: “It has been a true honour to have played with and Developed under Coach OShea …wish him all the best in the Peg….except against us.” ’ ’ ’

MIAMI — Randy Wolf pitched six innings Monday night for his first victory since 2012, and the Miami Marlins beat Tampa Bay 3-1, sending the Rays to their seventh consecutive loss. The 37-year-old Wolf, making a comeback from the second Tommy John surgery of his career, allowed three hits and one run. He struck out seven, walked one and won for the first time since he pitched Baltimore past Tampa Bay on Sept. 13, 2012. The Rays fell to 0-7 on their eight-game trip. Theyre 12 games below .500 for the first time since 2007, and their record (23-35) is the worst in the American League. Four Miami relievers completed the six-hitter, and Steve Cishek pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 13 chances. The Marlins snapped a streak of four consecutive home losses as they started a four-game home-and-home series against their intrastate rivals. The Rays went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position. Theyve scored six runs in their past five games. Alex Cobb (1-3) paid dearly for a rocky start. The Marlins scored three times in the first, when their first four batters reached. Casey McGehee hit a two-run single, and a bases-loaded double play scored another run. Cobb then settled down and shut out Miami over the next five innings, but the Rays couldnt rally. Tampa Bay starters remained winless in the past 15 games, the teams longest such streak since 2006. Wolf (1-1) didnt pitch in 2013 and was making his second start of this year. His fastball registered only in the upper 80s (mph), but he had command of his breaking pitches and struck out five of the first eight batters he faced. The Rays finally broke through in the fifth on an RBI double by Desmond Jennings, but Wolf retired the next three hitters. Wolf was signed as a free agent last month after ace Jose Fernandez was sidelined by a season-ending elbow injury. The left-hander improved his career record to 133-118. BUFFALO, N.Y. — Mary Wilson is taking over as the Buffalo Bills controlling owner after the death last week of her husband, Ralph Wilson. Ralph Wilson was the founder and only owner of the franchise. He died March 25 at the age of 95. The team says "A process will be established at an appropriate time for the sale of the franchise. " The Bills also announced that CEO Russ Brandon, general manager Doug Whaley and coach Doug Marrone will remain in charge of football operations under the new ownership. Ralph Wilson founded the Bills when the American Football League began play in 1960 and was a major factor in the merger of the AFL and NFL that was completed in 1970. He long expressed no desire to leave the team to his family, and this announcement is the first step in whats likely a lengthy path to new ownership. The team said in a statement: “This process will ensure that the club complies and is faithful to NFL rules and to its obligations to New York State and Erie County. We plan to have detailed discussions with the NFL, the state and county, and others as we determine the timing and structure of any sales process.” A 20-member committee called the New Stadium Working Group recently met to discuss whether the Bills should build a new stadium, or whether Ralph Wilson Stadium should be renovated. The current stadium lease expires in 2022. The Bills are essentially locked into playing at Ralph Wilson Stadium through 2019 under terms of a 10-year lease agreement they reached with state and county governments in December 2012. The deal features a $400 million penalty the Bills would have to pay in the event a court ruled in favour of the team breaking the lease and relocating. In 2020, however, the Bills have a one-time opportunity to opt out of the lease for about $28 million. M.D. Jennings Womens Jersey. And former Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson certainly knows his pain. “Its pretty hard to coach there without allowing some of these things to kind of affect you,” Wilson told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun in his ESPN. HOUSTON — Dallas Keuchel had a simple answer for what was working for him Tuesday night. “Everything,” Keuchel said. “I felt good with every pitch.” Keuchel (4-2) pitched a seven-hitter for his first major league shutout, leading the Houston Astros over the Texas Rangers 8-0. Keuchel struck out seven without a walk. He gave up just one extra-base hit, a double by Adrian Beltre in the first inning, and threw his second career complete game. “When youre able to plus and minus your fastball and have the type of command that Dallas has, hes able to … cut the ball into the righties,” Houston manager Bo Porter said. “He can sink it away from the righties. He runs it in on the lefties. He has confidence to throw his breaking ball, his changeup in any count.” It was the second straight start where Keuchel hasnt walked anyone, which Porter said shows his confidence in attacking the strike zone. Keuchel didnt think that part of his line was a big deal. “I dont really think about that,” he said. “When I throw strikes Im good, if I dont Im not very good. So I just have to throw strikes and be good.” L.J. Hoes and Carlos Corporan each homered and drove in three runs. The Astros were shut out 4-0 in the series opener, but jumped on Matt Harrison (1-1) for three runs in the second before he left with back stiffness. Hoes hit a two-run homer in the inning. “I felt OK warming up, but looking up (at the radar) I noticed that my velocity just kept going down further and further,” Harrison said. “Then I knew at that point, something wasnt right.” He said he will go to Dallas on Wednesday to visit a doctor. They were up by four before a four-run fifth inning powered by an RBI single by Hoes and a three-run shot by Corporan. The roof at Minute Maid Park was open to start the game, but it was closed during the eighth inning with a storm approaching. It was the first Astros game where the roof was both open and closed since 2006. Houston was up by four before a four-run fifth inning powered by an RBI single by Hoes and a three-run shot by Corporan.dddddddddddd. Texas slugger Prince Fielder was thrown out in the fourth, trying to stretch the first of two singles into a double in the fourth. He was initially ruled safe, but Porter challenged the call and it was overturned. Keuchel struck out the side in the second inning and was helped by his defence turning double plays in the third, sixth, seventh and ninth innings. “He was changing speeds really well,” Texas manager Ron Washington said. “And when he had to make a pitch, he threw that sinker. We just could not centre it. Everything we hit, we just kept beating it into the ground. And he kept throwing it, and we just kept beating it into the ground.” Designated hitter Chris Carter, who entered the game batting just .168, had a season-high three hits, Jose Altuve tripled and doubled and rookie George Springer had an RBI and walked three times. It was the first time since 2006 that a Houston rookie walked three times in a game. Hoes hit his first homer since opening day, a two-run shot to the Crawford Boxes in left field to give Houston a 2-0 lead in the second. Altuve hit a two-out double before Springer walked. Harrison was replaced by Justin Germano after an RBI single by Dexter Fowler made it 3-0. Harrison allowed four hits and walked three before he was pulled after 1 2-3 innings to tie his shortest career outing. He laboured from the start and had already thrown 55 pitches when he left the game. NOTES: Keuchels other complete game came on June 23, 2012, against Cleveland. … The Rangers will recall Nick Tepesch from Triple-A Round Rock before Wednesdays game to start the finale against the Astros against Scott Feldman. … Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow said Tuesday that RHP Jose Cisnero will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow next week. … Luhnow also said that reliever Matt Albers, who is on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis, has some inflammation and wont throw for the next 10 days. ’ ’ ’

SAN DIEGO — The San Francisco Giants know time is running short on defending their World Series title. Aaron Harang threw seven strong innings and Cameron Maybin had two hits and an RBI as the San Diego Padres dealt a big blow to the Giants fading playoff hopes with a 3-1 victory Wednesday night. The Giants, who have 19 games left, trail NL West-leading Arizona by seven games after the Diamondbacks beat the Rockies 5-3 on Wednesday night. San Francisco has dropped three of four and six of 10. “We have to win,” Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain said. “Thats all we have to do, is win.” San Francisco was going for a sweep of the three-game series against a club it had beaten six of the previous seven games at Petco Park. But Cain, who is 8-19 lifetime against the Padres, had little to show for allowing two runs and four hits in seven innings. After he allowed Will Venables leadoff homer in the first, he settled down and retired 11 consecutive batters before he issued two walks. Cain didnt allow another hit until Maybins two-out double in the sixth. “He did a great job,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “He gave up the leadoff homer and then he dealt. He keeps grinding out there for us.” Cain (11-10) struck out seven and walked three as he made his 200th career start. San Francisco rookie Brett Pill homered for a second straight game after he hit a home run Tuesday night in his first major league at-bat. “Its kind of frustrating when we cant really do anything for Matt,” Pill said. Venable scored twice, while Maybin doubled and tripled in a run in the ninth. The Padres got clutch defensive plays by Venable and Maybin. The first was by Maybin, who made a long running catch while crashing into the wall in left-centre field to rob Justin Christian leading off the game. Maybin hit his forehead on the padded wall and was on the ground for about a minute before he got up and stayed in the game. “I kind of face-planted dead square,” Maybin said. “Luckily, I was able to make a play and keep the early momentum because those guys take advantage.” Venable threw out Pill at home in the seventh when the rookie tried to score on a medium fly ball to right by pinch-hitter Pat Burrell. “Its one of those things that you have to go for it,” Bochy said. “It took a perfect throw. Those are the things you look back on and they hurt.” Said Harang: “The guys made some good plays from the first hitter of the game that kind of set the tone.dddddddddddd. It showed the intensity and excitement level that was going to happen.” San Diego, last in the NL West at 62-81, won for the second time in 13 games overall. “Thats the kind of intensity we have to bring day in and day out, no matter where we are in the standings,” Maybin said. Harang (13-5) broke a two-start losing streak by allowing one run and four hits in seven innings. Harang, who struck out three and walked three, is 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA in three starts this season against the Giants, all at Petco Park. LONDON — Canadian Daniel Nestor and partner Max Mirnyi of Belarus overcame Indias Rohan Bopanna and Pakistans Asian-Ul-Haq Qureshi in a 7-6 (2), 4-6, 11-9 (match tiebreak) victory on Sunday to begin group play at the ATP World Tour Finals. The win was particularly sweet, coming a week after Nestor and Mirnyi lost the Paris Masters final to the Bopanna-Qureshi team. “It was good to get that first win, especially after losing to them in Paris,” said Nestor. “The difference was that today we started better.” The 39-year-old Toronto native sealed the first of three group matches with an ace, which was ruled good by electronic linecalling. Nestor and Mirnyi still have to face the teams of Michael Llodra-Nenad Zimonjic and Mariusz Fyrstenberg-Marcin Matkowski before advancing out of Group B. The top two teams from both Group A and B move on to Saturdays semifinals. A championship at this tournament will be Nestors 75th career doubles title — tied for sixth on the all-time Open-era list. He has played on three winning teams at the year-end ATP Tour Finals tournament. Nestor and Mirnyi had a tough opening set, twice going up a break but losing each. “We lost both of my serves to allow them to get back into the match,” said Nestor. "Thats unacceptable. “Once we go up a break, that should be the set.” Nestor and Mirnyi recovered in the match tiebreak, rallying from a 3-6 deficit to win on a second match point.
