DOHA, Qatar — Venus Williams eased past Croatian qualifier Petra Martic 6-2, 6-2 to line up a second-round match with former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the Qatar Open on Monday. Williams was broken only once, when she led Martic 4-0. She has an up and down record so far this season, reaching the final in Auckland and losing in the first round at the Australian Open. Williams has won only one of her three matches against Kvitova, the third seed who has a first-round bye, but all three have gone the distance. Also, Chinas Peng Shuai beat 2006 champion Nadia Petrova 7-6 (5), 7-5 to even their matchups at 4-4. Petrova, who had to qualify after an injury-plagued 2013 dropped her singles ranking to 100, almost pulled off the win despite nine double faults. Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria defeated Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-3, 6-3 for the first time in four matches, while Annika Beck beat Mona Barthel in their all-German match 7-6 (5), 6-2 for the first time in three matches. Taiwanese qualifier Hsieh Su-wei won for the first time against Italys Flavia Pennetta 7-5, 6-3, and Czech qualifier Petra Cetkovska beat American Sloane Stephens 7-5, 6-1. Stephens, whod beaten Cetkovska at the last two Wimbledons, rallied to level at 5-5, but could win only one more game as she lost her serve five times. The field features seven of the top 10, led by Australian Open champ Li Na who, regardless of her result this week, will move to a career-best No. 2 ranking next week, above Victoria Azarenka, the two-time reigning Doha champ who was absent with a foot injury. SEATTLE — Utility player Willie Bloomquist officially signed a $5.8 million, two-year contract with the Seattle Mariners on Thursday, bringing him back to the team he started his major league career with. The deal was agreed to earlier this week and became official after Bloomquist passed a physical. Bloomquist said a combination of the offer Seattle made and a chance to return to the Pacific Northwest made the decision simple. Bloomquist will earn $2.8 million in 2014 and $3 million in 2015. “A lot of teams had interest and I had couple of offers on the table and was looking to better my position. When I heard Seattle had interest I was excited,” Bloomquist said. Bloomquist spent the past three seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, appearing in 225 games and hitting .289 with 36 doubles and 63 RBIs over that time. Last season with Arizona, he appeared in 48 games and had 139 at-bats. TThe 36-year-old Bloomquist spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Mariners.dddddddddddd. His high point came in 2006 when Bloomquist appeared in 102 games for Seattle. He spent the 2009-10 seasons with Kansas City and Cincinnati before joining the Diamondbacks. Bloomquist guessed that Felix Hernandez was the only Seattle player still remaining from his first stint with the club. He said getting a two-year deal was important. “It gives me security, which goes without saying, but it allows me to know that its not going to be a flash in the pan, here one year, gone the next,” Bloomquist said. He said that based on his conversations with Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik that hes expecting big moves this off-season from the Mariners. “In talking with Jack, he has some things up his sleeve that are going to make us a better team,” Bloomquist said. ’ ’ ’

DENVER — Randy Foye hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer, and the Denver Nuggets overcame a 36-point performance by Blake Griffin to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 116-115 on Monday night. Kenneth Faried had a career-high 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who denied the Clippers their sixth win in seven games. Ty Lawson, who missed the last four games with a shoulder injury, added 27 points and J.J. Hickson had 17 points and 12 rebounds. DeAndre Jordan had 19 points and 12 rebounds. It was his team record 28th consecutive game with at least 10 rebounds. Jamal Crawford added 19 points for the Clippers, who fell to 0-11 on the road when trailing after the third quarter. No more than five points separated the teams in the third quarter with the Nuggets taking an 82-81 lead into the fourth quarter when Quincy Miller stole the ball from Crawford and swept down the court for a layup, beating the buzzer. With 3:37 left, Griffin made two free throws to put the Clippers up 107-101 but the Nuggets scored eight straight points, getting six on free throws, and went in front by two. The Clippers answered, regaining the lead on a fast-break dunk by Griffin 111-109. Two free throws by Lawson re-tied it at 111-all with 1:21 left. Griffin made one of two from the line and Wilson Chandler made a pair and the Nuggets led 113-112 with 50.7 seconds remaining. Both the Clippers Crawford and the Nuggets Lawson missed jumpers before Matt Barnes connected on a go-ahead 3-pointer with 6.2 seconds remaining. But after a timeout, the Nuggets worked the ball to Foye who heaved a 3-pointer for the winner. Though the Clippers led by as many as 13 points early on, the teams battled to a 60-all tie at the half. Barnes and Darren Collison finished consecutive fastbreaks with layups to give the Clippers a 55-46 lead with 2:46 left in the second quarter. Chandler answered with a 3-pointer that was offset by a three-point play by Griffin, who then drew a foul, his third, while guarding Foye. Griffin spent the final couple minutes of the second quarter on the bench, during which the Nuggets closed with an 11-2 burst, including a jumper by Lawson with 29.7 seconds remaining that evened the score at the half. LAWRENCE, Kan. — There were moments of frustration for Kansas coach Bill Self, moments where hed angrily call a timeout or attend a post-game news conference and glumly bemoan another uneven performance. There never was a moment where he lost faith in his team. Now, after enduring the nations most brutal non-conference schedule, the sixth-ranked Jayhawks are proving to be exactly what the pundits thought theyd be: The Big 12s premier team, one that already has a substantial lead in the conference as the race nears its midway point. “We have grown, but were just now to the middle of the season. Thats whats so strange,” Self said. “The big thing is that were playing with more energy and were starting to understand how were going to score — not just running an offence to run an offence. Were not a tough team by any stretch, but are playing tougher than we did earlier in the season.” Thats certainly been evident in the results. After a loss to fifth-ranked San Diego State ended the Jayhawks 68-game non-conference winning streak at Allen Fieldhouse, Kansas has ripped off seven straight wins through arguably the toughest part of its league schedule. It began with a win at No. 23 Oklahoma, and continued with wins over four straight teams that were ranked in the Top 25 - Kansas State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Baylor. After a blowout win at TCU, the Jayhawks beat the No. 16 Cyclones for a second time on Wednesday night. Now, theyll head to No. 25 Texas with essentially a two-game lead in the Big 12. You catch the game on TSN2 on Saturday at 12am et/9pm pt. “Im not surprised at all,” junior guard Naadir Tharpe said. “I knew it was going to be a matter of time until everybody just let water run off their back and start going out there and just playing. That is what I feel like dudes are doing right now.” The most important of them may be Andrew Wiggins, the highly touted freshman. After fits and starts to begin his college career, the 6-foot-8 swingman and projected lottery pick in the June draft has gone on a tear. Wiggins scored a career-high 27 points in the win over the Horned Frogs, and then bested it with 29 points against the Cyclones earlier this week. Hes averaging more than 24 points over his past three games. “I would say I feel more comfortable on the court,” Wiggins said this week. “A lot of things are slowing down for me and my teammates are looking for me.” Hes also starting to create his own shot, something that he was reticent to do early in the season, prompting Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg to say hes "oozing with confidence. “Thats scary,” Hoiberg said. “With that athleticism, that length and that speed, the kids got it all. When hes knocking down shots, not too many better.” There arent many teams better than the Jayhawks right now. Since the start of league play, the nine-time defending champions are putting up a Big 12-leading 84 points per game. Theyre just a half-point out of second place in scoring defence, and their scoring margin of 12 points per game is seven better than second-place Oklahoma State. The Jayhawks (16-4, 7-0 Big 12) also lead the league in field-goal and 3-point percentage, rebounding defence and margin, blocked shots, assists and, well, you get the idea. “They have a special group,” TCU coach Trent Johnson said. “At every position, they have somebody who can score. They can attack you, so you really have to be on your toes.” After the Jayhawks, Texas may be the next hottest team in the Big 12 heading into Saturdays game. The Longhorns (16-4, 5-2) have rattled off five straight wins, the last three coming against ranked teams in Iowa State, Kansas State and Baylor. The Jayhawks will represent the first time in school history that Texas will have played four consecutive Top 25 opponents. “Theyre young. Theyre not quite as young as we are, but theyre young and fast, probably as fast as any team well play,” Self said. “Theyre obviously playing their tails off.” Darnell Dockett Jersey. Jayson Werth and Denard Span had three hits each for Washington, which had lost 6 of 7. Previously slumping, Washingtons offence has 14 runs and 30 hits in its last two games. Teague one handed three pointerTheres something to be said about having the nerve to go up and take a shot from downtown late in a close playoff game, but what is there really to say when that shot is one handed? Teague answers that question with a simple Jordan like shrug of the shoulders. Michael Floyd Jersey. Not to be outdone, Atletico Madrid bettered its title rivals by demolishing 10-man Getafe 7-0 with Diego Costa returning from injury to score with a brilliant bicycle kick. “It was an almost perfect night,” Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. The struggling Green Bay Packers will once again be without star quarterback Aaron Rodgers this week when they play the Atlanta Falcons. RALEIGH, N.C. — The previous time the Carolina Hurricanes had a month like this, a rare playoff appearance soon followed. The Hurricanes capped their first 10-win month since 2009 by beating the St. Louis Blues 3-1 on Friday night. Jeff Skinner scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, Alexander Semin added an empty-netter with 1:04 left and Nathan Gerbe scored on an early power play. Opening a four-game homestand that precedes the Olympic break, Carolina earned its fifth win in six games while staying in the mix in the crowded Metropolitan Division. “We want to have a good feeling going into the break and we want to sort of build off this win,” Skinner said. David Backes scored on the power play for St. Louis. The Blues, who average 3.36 goals per game, missed a chance to pull even with Chicago atop the Central Division by losing just their fourth game against an Eastern Conference team. “Hard to find a lot of good players in our game today,” St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock said. “They deserve a lot of credit. They skated. They checked. They played hard. And we looked like we had the body language like we wanted an easier game. Didnt get it.” Anton Khudobin stopped 26 shots for the Hurricanes. Jaroslav Halak made 28 saves in his fourth straight start, but had his four-game winning streak snapped. Khudobin stopped all 10 shots he faced in the third period, including a nifty leg save on Alex Pietrangelo with about 1 1/2 minutes left. And, he got some help from the goal post after two Blues — Jaden Schwartz and Jay Bouwmeester — each rang it in the final 2 minutes. “You need the post to be a goalies best friend,” Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. Semin then tacked on his highlight-reel empty-net goal that capped the Hurricanes best month in a while. They went 10-4 in January, and their previous 10-win month in March 2009 led into their only playoff appearance since 2006, when they won their only Stanley Cup. Skinner put Carolina up 2-1 off a draw 1:51 into the second. After Jordan Staal won a faceoff, the puck found Skinners stick and he beat Halak with a wrist shot from the slot that clipped the goalies glove for his seventh goal of the month. “Didnt really mean to bank it off his glove and in,” Skinner said. “You just try and get it to the net sometimes.” That turned out to be enough support for Khudobin, who earned the decision in every game this month for Carolina. He helped the Hurricanes leapfrog idle Columbus and Philadelphia in the division standings, with 59 points. When the night started, only 11 points separated second place from the cellar in the Metropolitan. The Hurricanes never trailed on Friday, taking advantage of some sloppy play early by the Blues — who were whistled for three penalties in the opening 11:25. Carolina went up 1-0 when Gerbe one-timed a slick cross-ice pass from Andrej Sekera 3:46 in. “The puck had moved, and there was an opening there and he found a soft area,” Sekera said. “He was wide open, so I just tried to get it to him, and he did a pretty good job.” The Blues, who have the leagues second-best power-play unit, tied it at 9:23 when Backes beat Khudobin high for his 150th career goal with St. Louis but just his second since Dec. 14. “Its nice to be back on the scoreboard but were more interested in winning,” Backes said. “Tonight was a game where they brought a hard-skating, tough-checking game, and we didnt have a ton of answers for it.” NOTES: St. Louis finished the month 9-5-0. … The Blues entered with 37 points on the road, the second-best total in the league, but have not won in Raleigh since 2009. … Carolina G Cam Ward, out all of January with an unspecified lower-body injury, made a conditioning start Friday night with Charlotte of the AHL. Jay Feely Jersey. The 33-year-old right-hander was 14-7 with a career-low 3.64 ERA in 28 starts for his hometown San Diego Padres last season. John Abraham Jersey. Ulissi made his move inside the final 300 metres, bursting out of the peloton to edge Robert Kiserlovski for a second stage win in the race. Wilco Kelderman was third on the 179-kilometre (111-mile) leg from Foligno to Montecopiolo, which had two category one climbs, including the final ascent to the finish. http://www.shopcardinalsus.com/women-ted-ginn-j…. Barcelona hosts third-division side Cartagena in the return leg of their round-of-32 tie after winning their first meeting 4-1. Andre Ellington Jersey. The Kings were beaten on a goal by Logan Couture after the Sharks played the entire 89 seconds of overtime on the power play. The Kings were received penalties for both hooking and goaltender interference in the final minute of regulation play. Deone Bucannon Jersey. The Scotsman was dismissed only five days after being told by the club he would remain in charge for the "foreseeable future.MANCHESTER, England — Robin van Persie ushered Manchester United into the Champions League quarterfinals — and potentially saved his managers job — with a hat trick in a 3-0 victory over Olympiakos that completed one of the competitions greatest comebacks on Wednesday. On one of the memorable European nights at Old Trafford, Van Persie scored three times in a 27-minute span either side of halftime to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg. A slew of brilliant saves by David de Gea were also key to a famous win for the English champions — and a vital one for their manager, David Moyes. Moyes position had come under intense scrutiny after Uniteds humiliating 3-0 loss to fierce rival Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, the latest in a string of dreadful results in his first season in charge. An early exit in Europe could have stretched the patience of fans and Uniteds hierarchy beyond breaking point — but Moyes is left hoping this can be a watershed moment in his United career. “I dont want to come out here and say this is the moment,” Moyes said, “but at the same time, I really hope it is.” A nerve-shredding night ended with Olympiakos captain Giannis Maniatis on his knees and in floods of tears, and Moyes saluting home fans and wearing the broadest grin. The under-fire United manager was saved by the goal-scoring qualities of Van Persie, who converted a penalty in the 25th minute, side-footed home his second goal in first-half injury time and curled in a free kick in the 52nd. And he also had words of praise for Ryan Giggs, who at the age of 40 delivered a tireless performance in midfield. Giggs lasted the full match, despite having played only 81 minutes since Jan. 7, and played a crucial role in Van Persies first two goals. “His all-round play was very good,” Moyes said. “He defies his age.” Van Persie was carried off on a stretcher in the final minutes after hurting his leg in a challenge but Moyes said he didnt think it was a serious injury. Olympiakos slumped to its 12th straight away defeat in England and missed out on securing a place in the last eight for the first time since 1999. The Greek champions had their chances — some of De Geas saves were breathtaking — but defensively they were chaotic and they became only tthe sixth team to squander a two-goal lead from the first leg of a Champions League match.dddddddddddd “We were unlucky,” Olympiakos midfielder David Fuster said, “and were pretty upset about it.” In Wednesdays other last-16 match, Borussia Dortmund advanced 5-4 on aggregate despite losing the second leg 2-1 at home to Zenit St. Petersburg. The draw for the quarterfinals is held on Friday. “We probably now will go into it as underdogs,” Moyes said. “If we play to our capabilities, which we have not done too often, then I think we will be a match for any team.” Moyes insisted on the eve of the biggest game of his reign that his position was not under threat, saying Uniteds vision was “long term,” the board was still supportive and stressing that he was in a six-year contract. Fans appeared to be starting to waver, although the banner reading “The Chosen One” — a nickname given to Moyes after he was hand-picked for the job by predecessor Alex Ferguson — remained hung up high in the Stretford End as Olympiakos kicked off. Initially, United was gripped by panic — misplacing passes, diving into tackles and showing no shape defensively — but the nerves were settled by Van Persies penalty. The Netherlands striker tumbled after being barged in the back by Jose Holebas after bringing down a cross-field pass from Giggs, and he got up to convert his penalty unerringly. Giggs was the architect of the second goal, too, floating another pass to Wayne Rooney, who crossed for Van Persie to caress his finish under goalkeeper Robertos dive. The aggregate score was now 2-2 and Moyes greeted the goal with repeated fist-pumps and marched back to the dressing rooms, breaking into a jog at one point. He was celebrating again within six minutes of the second half when Van Persie curled home a free kick from just outside the area, with Roberto earning the wrath of his defenders for not trusting his wall and vacating the area near where the ball crossed the line. With Olympiakos attacking relentlessly in the final 25 minutes, the final whistle was met with relief as much as joy by home fans. Languishing in seventh place in the Premier League, the Champions League remains a potential source of silverware for United this season. ’ ’ ’

Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week, they discuss Johnny Manziel, George Springer, Rory McIlroy and the Boston Red Sox. Dave Naylor, TSN – My thumb is down to Cleveland Browns draft pick Johnny Manziel for last weekends Las Vegas adventure, partying it up with Rob Gronkowski and a pool full of bikini-clad young women in a scene out of spring break. Apparently, Justin Bieber couldnt make it. Look, I know what some of you are thinking – what 21-year-old male wouldnt enjoy a weekend like that? And we dont judge them the same way. True enough, but when youre about to become the most scrutinized NFL quarterback since a guy named Tebow, you might want to lay just a bit low. Once youve proven youre Joe Namath on the field, you can act a little more like Joe Namath off it. But this was the first weekend after mini-camp. Theres going to be enough pressure on Manziel without giving people reason to believe he is really more about being Johnny Fratboy than Johnny Football. Steve Simmons, Sun Media – My thumb is up to George Springer, rookie outfielder with the Houston Astros and its not just because he hit seven home runs in seven straight games this week or because he became the first freshman to accomplish this in 77 years. Its up because of what happens almost every time Springer hits a home run. The Astros win and, if not, theyre in the game. The lousy, laughable, displaced Astros, the one team were supposed to disregard in the American League, are suddenly not a laughingstock. They have a 6-2 record when Springer hits a home run. Houstons not going to challenge for the playoffs or anything, but it may not lose 100 games for the first time in four seasons. And that, by itself, makes baseball better. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated – My thumb is up, perversely, to Rory McIlroy, who is adept at going low. He opened the Memorial tournament with a 63 Thursday after doing a one-eighty earlier in the week on ex-fiancée Caroline Wozniacki. And by one-eighty, I dont mean just calling off their wedding. Reportedly, he broke up with the tennis star in 180 seconds, via telephone. A three-year-relationship ended by a three-minute call. Talk about going low. Well, it could have been worse. He could have texted her…and used an emoticon. A devastated Wozniacki lost her first-round match at the French Open while a buoyant McIlroy enters todays round in Ohio six shots off the pace. Dave Hodge, TSN – My thumb is down to the Boston Red Sox for making Major League Baseballs career leader in failed drug tests – Manny Ramirez – the star attraction at Fenway Parks celebration of the 2004 World Series championship team. The Red Sox explained that Manny was chosen to throw out the first pitch because he was the 04 World Series MVP, so, sure, that was one reason to pick him. Time does not permit me to list all the reasons not to pick him. Marques Colston Youth Jersey. And it showed Thursday night. The Canadiens, playing in their second game in as many days, however, got a good performance in the end from their backup goaltender as he filled in for an injured Olympic gold medallist . Junior Galette Saints Jersey. Beaulieu has four goals and 10 assists in 32 AHL games and had one assist in five games for Montreal this season. David Hawthorne Black Jersey. Canada dropped a 24-21 decision to Zimbabwe before bouncing back with a 10-7 win over Spain. All three sides finished with seven points apiece in Pool E to move on to the final eight while the Philippines was last with only three points. Pierre Thomas Jersey. So far, his encore is even better. Wainwright became the National Leagues first eight-game winner by dominating Cincinnati again, and the St.Brad Jacobs and his Sault Ste. Marie rink got back in the win column at the Olympic mens curling tournament with a 7-4 win over the host Russian squad on Wednesday. Coming off back-to-back losses to Switzerland and Sweden, Canada never trailed in the game against Russias Andrey Drozdov, whose team dropped to 0-4. After scoring a pair in the second end, Jacobs gave uup a steal of one in the fourth before notching four in the fifth end.dddddddddddd After Drozdov blanked the sixth and seventh ends, he scored a pair to close the deficit to two. With the hammer in the ninth, Jacobs took a single and ran Drozdov out of stones in the 10th to seal the win. Canadas next game is on Thursday against Denmark at 5 a.m. ET. ’ ’ ’

The Ottawa Senators are looking to rebound from Saturdays 6-3 road setback against the rival Toronto Maple Leafs as they head to the CONSOL Energy Centre for a date with the Eastern Conference-leading Pittsburgh Penguins. Watch the Senators vs. Penguins live tonight on TSN at 7pm et/4pm pt. The Senators led 2-0 early in the second period, but the Maple Leafs scored six of the games final seven goals to take the tilt in regulation. Toronto winger Phil Kessel capped his fifth career hat trick with the game-winning goal at 14:02 of the third period. Chris Neil posted two goals and an assist while Colin Greening also had a goal and an assist for the Senators. Craig Anderson allowed five goals on 36 shots in the loss. “I felt we played hard. We gave up some chances in the second, but I thought we settled it down there in the third and got back after them,” said Neil. “I dont think its a 6-3 hockey game, thats for sure. It was pretty close back and forth.” Ottawa fell to 12-10-5 as the visiting team this season after Saturdays setback. The Sens will close a three-game road trip when they visit St. Louis on Tuesday. Erik Karlsson had a goal and two assists in Decembers blowout win over the Pens. The talented defenseman has 13 points (3 goals, 10 assists) in 13 career games versus Pittsburgh. Anderson is 5-4-1 with a 2.24 goals against average in 12 career games against the Pens, while Fleury is 9-9-1 with a 3.41 GAA in this matchup. The Penguins and Senators met for the first of three scheduled encounters in 2013-14 on Dec. 23 in Ottawa, and the home team recorded a 5-0 rout. Along with a 5-1 road loss to the New York Rangers on Nov. 6 and a 5-1 setback against visiting Florida on Jan. 20, it marked the only time Pittsburgh was defeated by a margin of four or more goals this season. Pittsburgh had won three straight in the regular-season series against the Sens before that December loss and Ottawa enters Monday having lost four of five in the Steel City. That doesnt include last seasons playoff encounter in the Eastern Conference semifinals, which the top-seeded Pens won in five games. The Penguins enter Monday leading the East with 78 points, but the talented club was dealt a regulation loss Saturday at Phoenix. Mike Smith stopped 23- of-24 shots to help the Coyotes register a 3-1 victory over Pittsburgh in the desert. Evgeni Malkin had the only goal of the game for the Penguins, who had won four of five entering the contest. Malkin passed Ron Francis for fifth place on Pittsburghs all-time scoring list with the goal, which represented the Russians 614th career point. Marc-Andre Fleury gave up all three goals on 30 shots in the loss. “I thought we played a real good game and their guy made some really strong saves,” said Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby. “They played a pretty tight game and when you dont cash in on your chances youre not going to win.” Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang missed his second straight game due to an illness and he is questionable for Monday. Fellow Pens blueliner Olli Maatta is also questionable after getting hit in the face with a puck on Saturday. The Pens boast a 22-4-0 record on home ice this season and have won 15 of their last 16 games as the host. NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Saints and free agent fullback Erik Lorig have agreed to a four-year contract. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Lorig, whose signing was announced Tuesday, has spent his first four NFL seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who selected him in the seventh round of the 2010 draft. Financial terms of Lorigs contract were not disclosed Lorig played defensive end at Stanford and was converted to fullback in his rookie season. He has played in 56 games, including 24 starts, lining up as a tight end at times and also playing on special teams. Lorig has served as the lead blocker for a pair of 1,000-yard rushers, Doug Martin in 2012 and LeGarrette Blount in 2010. He also has 30 catches for 193 yards and a touchdown. White Customized Limited Youth Jersey. – Gaston Fernandez is making the most of his new job with the Portland Timbers.TORONTO — When Gary Bettman approached Ray Emery during the Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup celebration at the White House, everyone around wondered what was going to happen. The Philadelphia Flyers goaltender had drawn league-wide attention just a few days earlier for skating the length of the ice to fight an unwilling combatant in Braden Holtby. Naturally, that came up. “I said: Oh, Ray. Its good to see you. Ive been thinking about you. We had a nice chat,” the commissioner said. “And I said, So just hypothetically, if there was a rule that said if you cross the red line to get into a fight with the other goaltender and you get a 10-game suspension, would you have done it? He goes, What? Are you crazy?” It might not be a 10-game suspension, but NHL general managers will discuss potential changes to fighting rules Tuesday at their annual meeting following Hall of Fame induction weekend. Bettman acknowledged that incidents like George Parros being concussed after falling during a fight with Colton Orr and what Emery did sparked plenty of debate, but he made it clear its just one of many topics on the agenda. “I think the level of dialogue gets sparked by an occasional incident, and an incident of this nature when you look at everything else that is going on in the season was really a small pebble relative to a beach full of sand, which is seeing an incredibly entertaining season,” Bettman said Monday. “I think sometimes an incident, as rare as it might be, tends to get focused on disproportionately.” During his remarks at the Prime Time Sports Management conference in Toronto, Bettman called fighting a “thermostat” in hockey that helps cool things down when tensions run high. “When Vinny Lecavalier was in a fight with (Jarome) Iginla … they got mad at each other,” he said during his question-and-answer session. “Id rather them be punching each other than swinging sticks at each other.” One of the arguments against the abolition of fighting, or even making the punishment a game misconduct or suspension, is that it would cause more high-sticks and cheap shots. Bettman did not overtly reveal his opinion one way or the other but said that feelings on both sides of the fighting debate are “really dug in.” “To say youre getting rid of fighting, Im not even sure what that means because you can change the penalty and make it more severe,” he said. “That doesnt mean if somebodys sufficiently motivated, theyre not going to fight. So well take the hypothetical. You get thrown out of the game if you fight. OK, I think guys will still fight if they feel the need.” A 2011 poll conducted by the NHLPA and CBC found that 98 per cent of players would not support the total elimination of fighting. Bettman wants to take the pulse of GMs at Tuesdays meeting. That includes feelings about goaltenders fighting and other topics. Emery was not suspended for pummelling Holtby because there is nothing in the rule book to use as precedent. Bettman expects a “general discussion” but does not think any rule changes will come about just yet. Bettman said the current rules, which include a five-minute major for fighting and extra penalties stemming from the instigator and third-man-in rules, represeent the consensus among GMs.dddddddddddd “If somebody wants to change it, there needs to be a new consensus,” he said. “Thats why the discussions ongoing. Having said that, it continues to evolve as the game does. Four years ago a shoulder hit to the head was not penalized. Now itll get you suspended. Were going to continue to look at what we can do to keep the game physical but safe as possible.” Senior vice president of player safety Brendan Shanahan, whos being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame Monday night, is expected to address the GMs and give his usual update. Hybrid icing will also be on the docket, as Bettman said the adjustment is ongoing for players and officials. While the Parros and Emery incidents stoked the fire about fightings place in the NHL, Bettman doesnt want them to overshadow other things that are going on, like the Colorado Avalanches hot start, strong television ratings and arenas being filled to 95 per cent of capacity. “We probably wouldnt even be having the fighting discussion right now if there wasnt a freak play with George Parros losing his balance and falling,” Bettman said. “Like the Emery-Holtby incident, those things dont define the season were having. Theyre important, we look at them, we discuss them, but they get more attention than they probably warrant in any particular case because were constantly monitoring the game.” Bettman said the NHL does fan research on a constant basis and not specifically when incidents are in the news. Hes also aware of the opinions expressed by league executives, like when Brian Burke wrote an editorial for USA Today in support of fighting. Tuesday provides a chance for “to see if anybody has an appetite for pursuing” any rule changes, Bettman said. “Ultimately if theres going to be a change, there needs to be a new consensus (among) all parties who have to make a decision,” he said. “We try to do whats in the best interest of the game, and that includes our fans, that includes our clubs and that includes our players. There are lots of views on lots of subjects. This happens to be one which probably gets a disproportionate amount of attention.” Another topic that has gotten a lot of attention is NHL expansion, especially considering unbalanced divisions created by realignment. Having 32 teams would even out the divisions, but Bettman said there were no formal plans to expand. “I dont envision right now going through a formal expansion process,” Bettman said in an interview after speaking at the conference. “We get expressions of interest all the time. Those are informal conversations that we have, but in terms of a formal bid process, Im not focused on doing anything like that right now.” The league and NHLPA have discussed reviving the World Cup of Hockey, which Bettman said hed prefer over the Olympics, but the commissioner did not provide an update on those talks. He did confirm that NHL Premiere games in Europe that happened from 2007 through 2011 will not come back at the start of the 2014-15 season. “Thats something that we and the Players Association have agreed on,” Bettman said. “We think its too late, all of us. We had a meeting a month ago and we jointly reached that conclusion.” ’ ’ ’

Téma: Nadační fond - ONE MORE DAY FOR CHILDREN / Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill said

1) Rumors about Jeff Samardzija being available and the Jays perhaps considering making a play if they are in contention near the end of July. The reported price for the Jays was Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez. Would you make that deal? The Blue Jays are in first place in the AL East. Read that again! The Blue Jays are in first place in the AL East!! I have visions of thousands of people outside of Rogers Centre just like there were for the Raptors outside of the Air Canada Centre. How much fun would that be? The AL East will be won by a general manager; not by players or managers this year. Who will make the moves that will give his team the advantage to separate from the pack? When is the last time we saw the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays as vulnerable as they are this season? This is the best chance in the last two decades that the Jays have to win the division. When I was in the front office of the New York Mets, John Gibbons was a manager and coach in the farm system there. When I got the Mets GM job it was Gibbons who made a statement that impacted me tremendously. He said, “Go for it. You dont know how long these jobs last or how many opportunities you will get to win, So Go For It!” That stuck with me and when I had chances to be a playoff team I did what I needed to do to get there and win. That included trading away some very good prospects to bring in winning players. I never regretted trading away prospects in years I made the playoffs. I searched “Toronto Blue Jays” online and went to the Jays Wikipedia page. Interestingly, the chronology of the Jays history is broken down by the era of the general manager. There is the Pat Gillick era, Gord Ash era, JP Riccardi era and now we are in the Alex Anthopolous era. It is time for Alex to write his legacy for his era. Go For It Alex! Prospects can get general managers fired. We all have waited for top prospects to impact our major league team and have seen many of them fizzle away. This is the year to go for it. Trade away what it takes to get Jeff Samardzija. He is darn good. If it takes both Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez then so be it. Do it now. Dont wait. Get Samardzija for as many starts as you can. He is still young and in the prime of his career and you control his contract next year as well. Dont wait until the trade deadline. Be the team that people are trying to catch at the deadline. This is the year that will define the Alex Anthopoulos Era. I hope he goes for it! 2) Did you like the decision to send Stroman back down to continue starting in AAA, or should the Jays have kept him to help the struggling pen? It was definitely the right decision to send Stroman down to the minors to assume his spot in the starting rotation. It is the best thing for Stroman and the best thing for the Jays. Stroman pitched like a youngster in his first stint in the majors. He got knocked around a bit coming out of the bullpen. He isnt an obvious solution out there. He has more value going back to AAA as a starter in case he is needed in Torontos rotation. The main reason he needs to go back to AAA and start though is for marketing purposes. He is a chip for Samardzija or any other starting pitching deal that the Jays will consider. Toronto needs Stroman to go down and pitch successfully at AAA so another teams scouts and general manager can dream about him in their rotation. It is not a matter of IF Stroman will stick in the big leagues, it is just a matter of WHEN and with WHOM. 3) The Jays swept the Red Sox, who fell to 20-26, 4th in the AL East. Whats wrong in Boston with the champs? This is an interesting question because in some way it means that we are surprised that the Jays could sweep the Red Sox. The Sox clearly have issues but in detailing those I dont want to take away from the Jays who outhit, outpitched and out defended the Sox. The Jays won by playing Blue Jays baseball the way the team was built to play. The Red Sox are struggling and those struggles are indicative of some serious issues. They are not nearly the team they were a year ago. In 2013, the Red Sox led the AL in runs scored by a wide margin (+57 runs on second place Detroit). They also were in the upper half in pitching with their starting rotation ranked fourth in the league. This season not much is going right for the Sox. They are ranked a respectable sixth in the league in pitching but only because their bullpen is significantly outpitching their rotation. The starters have a combined 4.50 ERA which is ranked 12th among the fifteen AL teams. The Red Sox find themselves trailing in games quite often since their starters give up early runs. That ultimately impacts the quality of the at bats of the hitters as they feel more pressure to produce. The offence is the biggest issue for the Sox. They average 5.26 runs per game in 2014 and just 4.04 per game this year. That tells you all you need to know. The Sox won 97 games in 2013 because they could score in any number of ways. They had great team power (fifth in HR) and great team speed (third in stolen bases). This season they are 10th in HR and 14th in stolen bases. This is a team wide struggle and is most prevalent against right-handed pitching. They are just 10-20 against right-handed starting pitching whereas they were 65-43 last season. Certainly the loss of Jacoby Ellsbury to the Yankees couldnt have been this substantial or is it? Consider that Ellsburys stat line last season vs. right-handers was .328/.374/.489. Plus he stole 39 bases in those games. The Red Sox are barely on pace to steal that many bases as a team this season. Ellsburys replacements in CF, Grady Sizemore (.233/.307/.344) and Jackie Bradley Jr. (.209/.313/.279) are not doing much to make Red Sox fans forget about Ellsbury. It is not solely the loss of Ellsbury that is hurting the Red Sox against righties: Davis Ortiz is significantly less as well but that may be tracked back to Ellsbury too. Without Ellsbury on base in front of Ortiz he is getting much different pitches to hit. The Red Sox need much better starting pitching if they are going to win the division. They are also going to have to find a catalyst offensively (and it wont be the recently signed Stephen Drew) and they are going to need David Ortiz to have his best season ever. I thought Ellsbury was significantly overpaid by the Yankees but maybe he was worth it….to the Red Sox!!! 4) When we were kids growing up, we all played baseball and at times imagined ourselves as major league players. I have four boys and love to ask them what they want to be when they grow up. “I want to be a baseball player,” says one. Another says, “I want to be a football player.” During basketball season I get, “I want to play in front of Raptors fans.” Another son says, “I want to be a baseball analyst.” He is my favorite. Most sports fans at one point or another dreamed of playing professionally. When we grow up we all want to be general managers. We call in to talk radio shows with opinions about players and trades and free agents. It seems like such a great job doesnt it? The first two months of this baseball season has made me remember the pain of being a general manager. John Steinbeck wrote in his 1937 novel Of Mice and Men, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” Well isnt that the truth. You all want to be a general manager but there are days that I would have rather been raking the field than making decisions about the team. So often in baseball you can have the right design and configuration of your roster but stuff happens: injuries, underperformance, marital problems, etc. There are so many unpredictable variables that can impact a teams results. The Dodgers started the season with the best one-two punch in baseball with Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke, but Kershaw hurt his back and has missed time. The As and Rays started the season with great young starting pitching depth but both have two starters out from elbow surgery. The Pirates and Indians both made the playoffs last year with very young teams. They came in to 2014 expecting their young players to take another step forward and to be competitive again for a playoff spot. Both clubs are struggling. Werent those fair expectations? Heck the Red Sox won the World Series last year. Even though they lost a player here and there they should still be among the best in baseball…right? The Nationals were a very popular pick to represent the NL in the World Series this year. They have been just mediocre, but who would have predicted that Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman would miss weeks of the season and that Doug Fister and Gio Gonzalez would spend time on the DL. It is the most frustrating part of being a general manager. Your thinking and decision-making can be spot on yet the results can completely collapse. So much happens that cant be predicted. Stuff that is completely out of your control. I am breaking out in hives just thinking about it. Having been in the room when my kids were born I have always wondered why women go back for more after having one. It hurts so much why would anyone want to do it again. Women say they have “selective memory.” They have the ability to move away from the pain and only remember the joy of childbirth. I guess being a GM is kind of like that too. The anguish of seeing your plans blow up before your very eyes can be painful. Yet GMs go back for more year after year. As for me…no more kids please! Cary Williams Jersey. Hudson allowed three hits while working into the eighth inning in his first start for the Giants and San Francisco beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-0 on Wednesday night. Hudson (1-0) was making his first start since July 24 after fracturing his right ankle against the Mets while pitching for the Braves. The veteran right-hander, who signed with San Francisco as a free agent in the off-season, had four strikeouts and no walks, and had Arizona hitters pounding the ball into the ground. “After a couple of month from my surgery, I know coming back was a definite possibility,” Hudson said. “You get anxious but I wouldnt call it butterflies. You just anxious to get back out there.” Hudson showed solid command of his first pitch and threw that first offering for strikes. “He really attacked the zone,” said catcher Buster Posey, who went 2 for 4 night with a run scored. “Im sure he was anxious but didnt show it. Hes been doing this for so long that he controls his emotional very well.” Arizona starter Trevor Cahill (0-1) held the Giants scoreless until the fifth. Angel Pagan singled in a run in the fifth and Michael Morse doubled in a run in the sixth to make it 2-0. Sergio Romo shut down the Diamondbbacks in order to record his second save.dddddddddddd The Diamondbacks threatened only twice with Hudson on the mound. MONTREAL — There was something familiar about the way coach Mike Babcocks Detroit Red Wings checking smothered the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night. It was almost exactly like the way Babcocks Team Canada won gold at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The result was a 2-1 Red Wings victory on Swedish Olympian Gustav Nyquists rebound goal with 28 seconds left in overtime. “(Babcock) always stressed that we play this way,” said Johan Franzen, who returned from a concussion to assist on both Detroit goals. "This is how you win games. “Especially coming down the stretch here and going into the playoffs, this is how you have to play hockey. Youve got to track like never before, and always be above their guys and make it small for them so you can create turnovers. Then you give your team a lot of opportunities.” Franzen set up a power-play goal 14:01 into the first period by Todd Bertuzzi for Detroit (27-20-12). Captain Brian Gionta scored for Montreal (32-21-7) with 29 seconds left in regulation time after goalie Peter Budaj was pulled for an extra attacker. Babcocks defence-first style helped Canada go 6-0 at the Olympics, surrendering only three goals along the way. Giontas goal was the first against a Babcock-coached team since Lauris Darzins got one at 15:41 of the first period of Canadas 2-1 quarter-final win over Latvia. Canada shut out the United States 1-0 in the semifinals and then topped Sweden 3-0 in the final on Sunday. “Its tough to compare,” said Nyquist. "Its a different style of game on a smaller rink here. “It was an adjustment for a few guys out there. But it was nice to get the win.” There were a handful of Olympians of both sides who had trickled back over the past week as their teams were eliminated. It made for slow, scrambling hockey with few good scoring chances on either side. Detroit had a 30-20 shot advantage, and fans booed as Montreal tested Jimmy Howard only twice in the second frame. “Im sure guys noticed the time difference a bit,” said Nyquist. "You have to battle through it. “It was the middle of the night in Sochi, but weve been back for three days and were starting to get it back. Well get some sleep before we play in Ottawa (on Thursday night).” The Canadiens salvaged a point when Gionta collected a puck at the side of the net in a scramble and backhanded the tying goal into a top corner. “The execution was not there tonight for both teams,” said Montreal coach Michel Therrien. "Both teams played solid defensively. “There wasnt much space on the ice. But we put ourselves in position to get a point. Its disappointing that we didnt score in overtime or get to the shootout.” Franzen fed Bertuzzi at the edge of the crease for a power-play goal 14:01 into the game after Canadian Olympian P.K. Subban was called for roughing. Bertuzzi returned to the lineup after missing eight games with an upper-body problem. Franzen had sat out six in a row and 21 of the last 22 with his concussion, but said he felt fine after the game. In overtime, Franzen tipped a Danny DeKeyser shot and the rebound went to Nyquist for a shot into an open side. Budaj had been slated to start in goal for Montreal even before Canadian Olympian Carey Price suffered a lower-body injury during the teams game-day skate. He is to start again when Montreal visits Pittsburgh on Thursday night. The 21,273 at the Bell Centre gave a rousing ovation to 12 members of Canadian mens and womens hockey gold medallist teams from the Sochi Olympics in a pre-game ceremony. VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Whitecaps say captain Jay DeMerit will miss at least the next six weeks of action after tearing a tendon in his left ankle. The injury happened in the first half of Saturdays 3-3 road draw against the Philadelphia Union. The team said the 34-year-old DeMerit will rehab the ankle instead of opting for surgery. The veteran defender tore his left Achilles tendon in the first game of the 2013 season and missed six months of action. Vancouver is 5-2-6 in Major League Soccer so far in 2014 — with DeMerit having started 11 of those matches — but the Whitecaps have allowed an average of more than 1.5 goals against per game. Winnipegs forward lines in particular have been taking a beating over the intense early schedule. Centres Bryan Little and Jim Slater missed practices this week for what Noel termed “maintenance,” although he says it looks like both would be ready Friday. Right wing Chris Thorburn, however, has been placed on the injury list and the Jets have called up Patrice Cormier from the St. Johns IceCaps in case hes needed. Whether he sees any ice time likely depends on who else is fit enough to play. Cormier played 10 games but not a lot of minutes with the Jets last season and was happy to get the call, although he didnt answer it. He said he was in a movie theatre and when he left he noticed he had missed 14 calls.dddddddddddd “Excited but surprised,” is how he described his reaction. “I didnt really know what was going on. I watched the game against Montreal, I didnt see anyone — usually you see guys get hurt.” The Blues (4-1-0), meanwhile, are the kind of team the Jets (3-4-0) need to measure themselves against if they want to be competitive in the Western Conference, suggested centre Olli Jokinen. “I think its a good challenge, I think its a good test for our team,” he said. “They probably feel that theyre close to winning the Cup. Every year for the last two years theyve been right there.” The Blues have never won the Stanley Cup. They missed the playoffs in 2010 and 2011 but with new coach Ken Hitchcock in charge they won the Central Division in 2012, losing the conference semi-final to Stanley Cup winner Los Angeles. Last season they finished second in their division to eventual Stanley Cup winner Chicago but lost in the quarter-finals to the Kings again. The Blues will be coming to Winnipeg after playing in Chicago Thursday night, but Jokinen didnt think that was going to make much of a difference. “They dont take any teams lightly,” he said. “They play the same way every night.” Noel, meanwhile, was Hitchcocks assistant with the Columbus Blue Jackets and replaced Hitchcock on an interim basis when he was fired. St. Louis will be coming to Winnipeg without forward Maxim Lapierre, who is meeting with NHL officials over a hit Tuesday to San Joses Dan Boyle that sent him off on a stretcher. Its expected that Lapierre will be fined and receive a lengthy suspension for the hit that drove Boyles head into the boards. ’ ’ ’

ST. LOUIS — Ryan Getzlaf and the Anaheim Ducks believe they sent a message to the rest of the NHL over the past week. “We feel like were an elite team,” Getzlaf said. “And now were starting to show it.” Getzlaf sparked an early three-goal outburst with his 16th of the season and rookie Frederik Andersen made 26 saves to lead the Ducks to a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night. Anaheim won its second in a row, after beating defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago 3-2 in a shootout Friday. The Ducks 45 points are tied for the most in the league with Chicago. St. Louis lost for the third time in four games and fell to 12-2-2 at home. Corey Perry, Andrew Cogliano, Nick Bonino and Mark Fistric also scored for the Ducks, who had not won in regulation in their previous eight trips to St. Louis. Anaheim completed a four-game run against the Western Conference elite with six points. The Ducks lost in overtime to San Jose and Los Angeles. “This stretch has been big for us,” Getzlaf said. “Were playing with a lot of confidence and we believe we can fit in with the best teams in the league.” Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau agreed. “What weve proved at this stage of the year is that we can play with the big boys and compete with them,” he said. “Were going to leave (here) feeling good about ourselves.” Chicago, St. Louis, San Jose and Los Angeles are a combined 76-24-17. Getzlaf, who added an assist, has a point in his last 13 games. He has 10 goals and 10 assists during that span. Getzlaf missed three games in November with an injury and has a point in his teams past 11 games, the longest current run in the NHL. Andersen, who won his first six starts, improved to 8-1 with his second successive victory. He leads all rookie goalies in wins. Jaden Schwartz and Patrik Berglund scored third-period goals for St. Louis, which had won five straight home games. Anaheim scored three times in the opening 7:29 to chase Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak, who faced eight shots. Cogliano got it started by banking in a shot off the skate of Barret Jackman after just 70 seconds. Perry scored his team-high 18th on the power play at 5:36. Getzlaf capped the early blitz with a drive from the faceoff circle. “We knew they would make a big push and we had to meet it head on,” Getzlaf said. “We did a good job of doing that.” Andersen said the three early goals made his job a lot easier. “But you still have to force yourself to stay sharp,” he said. “If we can score three goals that quick, they can, too. They fired a lot of shots, but most of the time I was able to see the puck through traffic.” Halak was pulled for the third time this season. “I need to look at myself and everybody else needs to probably find the answers,” Halak said. “We need to play for 60 minutes, not only for 20.” Bonino converted at 17:16 of the second period to push the lead to 4-0. Andersen stopped the first 20 shots he faced and helped kill off 4-minute power plays in each of the first two periods. The Blues have struggled in the first period of late, falling behind San Jose 4-0 and Los Angeles 2-0 in the past four games. “Were obviously not getting ready to play,” Berglund said. “Its hard to get back against a good team like Anaheim.” NOTES: Anaheim RW Teemu Selanne was a healthy scratch after playing Friday in Chicago. The 43-year-old has played on back-to-back nights only once this season. … St. Louis C Derek Roy is one assist shy of 300 for his career. … The Blues are an NHL-best 57-16-8 at home since the beginning of the 2011-2012 season. … Anaheim G Jonas Hiller was given the night off after facing 76 shots and 12 shootout attempts in the previous two games. … St. Louis has scored at least two goals in all 16 home games this season. Getzlaf was wearing a brace on the injured knee Sunday and said hes going to be re-evaluated by doctors Sunday and Monday. “I think heell miss some time.dddddddddddd Im not sure how much,” head coach Corey Chamblin told the Regina Leader-Post. NEWARK, N.J. — The chief executive of the New Jersey Devils of the NHL and the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA doesnt believe the professional teams will be cast in a bad light by agreeing to a multiyear sponsorship deal with one of the worlds leading online poker companies. The six-foot-two, 210-pound native of Coon Rapids, Minn.ST. LOUIS — By Sunday morning, most everyone had become an expert on the obstruction rule. “How can u make a call like that in the World Series,” rapper Lil Wayne tweeted. “Worst ending to a World Series game ever!” PGA golfer Hunter Mahan posted. “Obstruction of justice,” Arizona Cardinals kicker Jay Feely wrote. No matter that the Official Baseball Rules have a slightly different take on what happened when St. Louis runner Allen Craig tripped over Boston third baseman Will Middlebrooks in Game 3 late Saturday night. But anytime someone scores the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning without even touching home plate — called safe on an extremely rare ruling by an umpire — its bound to cause a little ruckus. “Umps made the right call last night. I still put my fist thru the wall. And Im in a hotel so it was expensive,” comedian and Massachusetts native Denis Leary tweeted. All sides seemed to agree on this point: Allen Craig tripping over Boston third baseman Will Middlebrooks likely made for the most crazy, chaotic October finish of all-time. And it gave St. Louis a 5-4 win at Busch Stadium and a 2-1 edge. “As a baseball fan, you hate to see a game end like that,” pitcher Adam Wainwright said Sunday before Game 4. “Obviously Im on the Cardinals, so Im fortunate the rule is the way it is. And you hate to say it, but he impeded the process of running home.” “But I totally understand why Red Sox players would be upset about that. That is just a horrible way to lose a baseball game, no question about it,” he said. Said Red Sox manager John Farrell: “It wasnt a normal night of sleep, I know that.” For more than a century, the World Series has delivered dramatic endings — Kirk Gibsons homer, Carlton Fisks shot, David Freeses drive on this very same field in 2011. There have been plenty of kooky plays — Reggie Jackson turning his hip to get hit by a throw, Roger Clemens throwing part of a broken bat toward Mike Piazza, an out in the 1970 Series when the catcher missed the runner and the runner missed the plate. But no one had seen anything quite like this. “Never,” umpire crew chief John Hirschbeck said. “Never,” third base umpire Jim Joyce said after making the call. Said Craig: “I didnt know if I was out or safe or not.” Craig was awarded home after getting tangled with Middlebrooks. A wild throw set off the sequence, and Middlebrooks was sprawleed in the baseline and kicked up his legs as Craig tripped over him.dddddddddddd Running on a banged-up foot, Craig headed home and the throw by left fielder Daniel Nava beat him. Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia made the tag in plenty of time and Craig never reached the plate. But umpire Dana DeMuth signalled safe, having seen Joyces call at third base. Both teams immediately rushed to the plate. Middlebrooks threw down his glove and joined the Boston argument. The Cardinals came out to celebrate. The fans took awhile to react, unsure of what theyd just witnessed. “I think maybe 75 per cent of the guys didnt know what happened,” Cardinals star Carlos Beltran said. “I wasnt sure why he was called safe,” Middlebrooks said. Middlebrooks said any contact was accidental. Doesnt matter, though. The play is covered by Rule 2.00 and Rule 7.06, and makes it clear that obstruction is called anytime a runner is impeded. “It does not have to be intent. There does not have to be intent. OK?” Hirschbeck said. Not OK, Boston pitcher Jake Peavy said. “Its a joke,” Peavy groused. Farrell was more forgiving. “You know what, the call was made correctly. The umpires — Jim Joyce, Dana DeMuth — that call was made as it should have been,” he said Sunday. How rare was it? The last time a big league game ended on an obstruction call was 2004, when umpire Paul Emmel said Seattle shortstop Jose Lopez blocked Carl Crawfords sightline. Emmel was the first base umpire Saturday night. Longtime Red Sox fans remember a noncall that went against them in the 1975 World Series. In Game 3, Cincinnatis Ed Armbrister bunted in the 10th inning and bumped into catcher Carlton Fisk. There was no interference called, Fisk made a wild throw and Joe Morgan hit a winning single. Watching from the dugout Saturday night, St. Louis manager Mike Matheny wasnt sure what to think. Matheny had seen umpires reverse a call in Game 1 that cost the Cardinals. Hed seen Craig trip and was ready to argue. And he also saw Craig down in the dirt after re-injuring his foot. “We were wanting to celebrate, but we see a guy laying there and its all confusing,” Matheny said Sunday. “And we see the umpires come together, and that didnt work out real good for us last time.” “We got inside the clubhouse, and it was still kind of that sombre mood,” he said. “And Chris Carpenter yelled out real loud, Hey, boys, we just won a World Series game!” ’ ’ ’

TAMPA, Fla. — Josh McCown is excited to have another opportunity to prove hes a No. 1 quarterback. The 34-year-old has been a backup for most of his career and will enter his 12th NFL season as a starter with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after signing a two-year, $10 million contract in free agency. The move reunites him with new Bucs coach Lovie Smith, who is overhauling a team that finished 4-12 in 2013, missing the playoffs for the sixth straight season. “I understand why people would say this is kind of surprising,” McCown, whos joining his eighth team since entering the league as a third-round draft pick in 2002, said Thursday. “But in my familys world, this is kind of par for the course to have something relatively unusual happen,” he added. “I really feel like I played my best ball last year and look forward to building on that.” McCown, who turns 35 in July, started five games as a replacement for injured Chicago starter Jay Cutler last season, going 3-2 and finishing with 13 touchdown passes and one interception. Because he hasnt played a lot over a decade that includes stops with the Bears, Cardinals, Lions, Raiders, Dolphins, 49ers and Panthers, the Bucs are counting on his body being a lot fresher than most quarterbacks his age. McCown played under Smith for two of the three seasons the quarterback spent in Chicago. Both are confident what hes learned as a long-time backup will be beneficial in settling into a role ahead of second-year pro Mike Glennon, who started 13 games for Tampa Bay as a rookie. “Josh is exactly what youre looking for in a leader to get that 4-12 taste out of our mouths,” Smith said. McCown was joined at a news conference by new starting left tackle Anthony Collins, who agreed Thursday to a five-year, $30 million contract. The 28-year-old Collins replaces Donald Penn, who was released. Hes the sixth player to join the Bucs through free agency as Smith and new general manager Jason Licht reshape the roster. The team welcomed defensive end Michael Johnson, cornerback Alterraun Verner, defensive tackle Clinton McDonald and tight end Brandon Myers on Wednesday. “We talked a lot about defence (Wednesday), but (the NFLs) about scoring points,” Smith said. “The game is more about offence these days. We feel like weve made strides.” McCown started 13 games for the Cardinals in 2004, going 6-7 while throwing 11 TD passes and 10 interceptions. He was 2-7 in nine starts with the Raiders in 2007. Overall, hes 16-22 in 38 career starts. “The good thing is that Ive gone through an off-season as a starter when I was in Arizona, so I understand what comes with all those things,” McCown said. Glennon was 4-9, taking over Tampa Bays offence after Josh Freeman struggled and subsequently was released. The third-round draft pick threw for 19 touchdowns and just nine interceptions as a rookie, but also was sacked 40 times while failing to demonstrate he was the teams clear-cut quarterback of the future. The signing of Collins, a part-time starter the past six seasons with Cincinnati, upgrades a porous offensive line that needs to do a better job protecting the quarterback. Like McCown, the 6-foot-7, 315-pound tackle is savoring the chance to show he can flourish as a full-time starter. “Im very ready,” said Collins, who will step in for Penn, a 2011 Pro Bowl selection who had been scheduled to earn $7 million next season. “Patience is a virtue,” Collins added. “Now is my time.” White T.Y. MADRID, Spain — Cristiano Ronaldo scored a record equaling goal before exiting to injury as Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 on Wednesday to take a big step toward the Champions League semifinals. Ronaldo netted his 14th goal of the season in Europes top competition to give Madrid a clear advantage ahead of next weeks quarterfinal return leg in Germany. But it came at a price as the Portugal forward, who came into the first-leg nursing a sore left knee, came off in the 80th minute. Gareth Bale scored early and Isco added another before the half hour mark at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. “Ronaldo has a problem with his knee but at this moment Im not worried about it,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. The Spaniards opened against Dortmund as the Germans had against them in the semifinals last season — when they thrashed Madrid 4-1 en route to reaching the final with a 4-3 victory on aggregate. In Wednesdays other quarterfinal first leg, Paris Saint-Germain beat Chelsea 3-1 in the French capital. Madrid certainly didnt need inspiration after last seasons loss to Dortmund, which was without suspended striker Robert Lewandowski and five more regulars to injury as it fielded just four of the players present in last seasons 4-1 win. “The goals we gave up tonight were not because of this,” Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. “It was too easy (for them), and thats not what we wanted. We made some mistakes and we were punished.” The energetic start saw Bale nearly miss Dani Carvajals short pass inside the area before stretching to toe poke his fifth goal of the competition under goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller after just three minutes. Weidenfeller was sharp despite Madrids early onslaught as he punched free kicks from Ronaldo and Bale over the bar. He also stayed in the game despite wincing in pain after Marco Reus made a clearance that also connected with the keepers hands. With forward Angel Di Maria out to a gastro virus, Isco showed good poise to gather a loose ball in front of the area and slide home a low shot for 2-0 in the 27th minute. The Spain midfielders goal was just the boost Madrid needed as Dortmund began to find its rhythm, with Kevin Grosskreutz forcing Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas into a low stop in the 33rd. Ronaldo, playing in his 100th Champions League game, was clearly eager to match the record 14 goals scored by Lionel Messi in one Champions League campaign. Luka Modric made it happen as the Croat pounced on a poor Dortmund pass deep in its own area in the 57th minute and picked out Ronaldo, who dribbled around Weidenfeller for his 45th goal of the season. Jose Altafini also scored 14 goals in the 1962/63 European Cup campaign for AC Milan. “We did what we prepared for well,” Ancelotti said. “We used a lot of energy in the first half and were tired. So we dropped the team back a little in the second half — while looking to score on the counter.” While Ronaldo and Karim Benzema continued to threaten Dortmunds goal, Madrid was fortunate not to concede under pressure as Pepe blocked Reus shot from inside the area after Casillas failed to control a cross. Madrids defence blocked several Dortmund shots during the final stages. “You have to do the right tactical things against the best teams in the world. We can do better than we did tonight,” said Klopp, who rued the late misses. “(Losing) 3-0 you are not cool, you are not confident, you are under pressure and you are not confident in the box. We had chances.” Madrid, which is vying for a record 10th European Cup, is now on the cusp of a fourth straight appearance in the semifinals — a welcome lift after a difficult run in the Spanish league. SAN DIEGO — Tony Gwynn could handle a bat like few other major leaguers, whether it was driving the ball through the “5.5 hole” between third base and shortstop or hitting a home run off the facade in Yankee Stadium in the World Series. He was a craftsman at the plate, whose sweet left-handed swing made him one of baseballs greatest hitters. Gwynn loved San Diego. San Diego loved “Mr. Padre” right back. Gwynn, a Hall of Famer and one of the greatest athletes in San Diegos history, died Monday of oral cancer, a disease he attributed to years of chewing tobacco. He was 54. “Our city is a little darker today without him but immeasurably better because of him,” Mayor Kevin Faulconer said in a statement. In a rarity in pro sports, Gwynn played his whole career with the Padres, choosing to stay in the city where he was a two-sport star in college, rather than leaving for bigger paychecks elsewhere. His terrific hand-eye co-ordination made him one of the games greatest pure hitters. He had 3,141 hits — 18th on the all-time list — a career .338 average and won eight batting titles to tie Honus Wagners NL record. He struck out only 434 times in 9,288 career at-bats. He played in San Diegos only two World Series — batting a combined .371 — and was a 15-time All-Star. He had a memorable home run in Game 1 of the 1998 World Series off fellow San Diegan David Wells, and scored the winning run in the 1994 All-Star Game despite a bum knee. Gwynn never hit below .309 in a full season. He spread out his batting titles from 1984, when he batted .351, to 1997, when he hit .372. Gwynn was hitting .394 when a players strike ended the 1994 season, denying him a shot at becoming the first player to hit .400 since San Diego native Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941. Gwynn befriended Williams and the two loved to talk about hitting. Gwynn steadied Williams when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the 1999 All-Star Game at Bostons Fenway Park. Fellow Hall of Famer Greg Maddux tweeted, “Tony Gwynn was the best pure hitter I ever faced! Condolences to his family.” Gwynn was known for his hearty laugh and warm personality. Every day at 4 p.m., Gwynn sat in the Padres dugout and talked baseball or anything else with the media. Tim Flannery, who was teammates with Gwynn on the Padres 1984 World Series team and later was on San Diegos coaching staff, said hell “remember the cackle to his laugh. He was always laughing, always talking, always happy.” “The baseball world is going to miss one of the greats, and the world itself is going to miss one of the great men of mankind,” said Flannery, the San Francisco Giants third base coach. “He cared so much for other people. He had a work ethic unlike anybody else, and had a childlike demeanour of playing the game just because he loved it so much.” Gwynn had been on a medical leave since late March from his job as baseball coach at San Diego State, his alma mater. He died at a hospital in suburban Poway, agent John Boggs said. “He was in a tough battle and the thing I can critique is hes definitely in a better place,” Boggs said. “He suffered a lot. He battled. Thats probably the best way I can describe his fight against this illness he had, and he was courageous until the end.” Gwynns wife, Alicia, and other family members were at his side when he died, Boggs said. Gwynns son, Tony Jr., was with the Philadelphia Phillies, who later placed him on the bereavement list. “Today I lost my Dad, my best friend and my mentor,” Gwynn Jr. tweeted. “Im gonna miss u so much pops. Im gonna do everything in my power to continue to … Make u proud!” Gwynn had two operations for cancer in his right cheek between August 2010 and February 2012. The second surgery was complicated, with surgeons removing a facial nerve because it was intertwined with a tumour inside his right cheek. They grafted a nerve from Gwynns neck to help him eventually regain facial movement. Gwynn had been in and out of the hospital and had spent time in a rehab facility, Boggs said. “For more than 30 years, Tony Gwynn was a source of universal goodwill in the national pastime, and he will be deeply missed by the many people he touched,” Commissioner Bud Selig said. Fans paid their respects by visiting the statue of Gwynn on a grassy knoll just beyond the outfield at Petco Park. Gwynn was last with his San Diego State team on March 25 before beginning a leave of absence. His Aztecs rallied around a Gwynn bobblehead doll they would set near the bat rack during games, winning the Mountain West Conference tournament and advancing to the NCAA regionals. Last week, SDSU announced it was extending Gwynns contract one season. The Aztecs play at Tony Gwynn Stadium, which was built in the mid-1990s with a $4 million donation by then-Padres owner John Moores. Gwynn was born in Los Angeles on May 9, 1960, and attended high school in Long Beach. He was a two-sport star at San Diego State in the late 1970s and early 1980s, playing point guard for the basketball team — he still holds the game, season and career record for assists — and in the outfield on the baseball team. Gwynn always wanted to play in the NBA, until realizing during his final year at San Diego State that baseball would be the ticket to the pros. He was drafted by both the Padres (third round) and San Diego Clippers (10th round) on the same day in 1981. After spending parts of just two seasons in the minor leagues, he made his big league debut on July 19, 1982. Gwynn had two hits that night. After Gwynn hit a double, all-time hits leader Pete Rose, who been trailing the play, said to him: “Hey, kid, what are you trying to do, catch me in one night?” In a career full of highlights, Gwynn had his 3,000th hit on Aug. 9, 1999, a first-inning single to right field at Montreals Olympic Stadium. Gwynn retired after the 2001 season and became a volunteer assistant coach at SDSU in 2002. He took over as head coach after that season. He and Cal Ripken Jr. — who spent his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles — were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007. “I had no idea that all the things in my career were going to happen,” Gwynn said shortly before being inducted. “I sure didnt see it. I just know the good Lord blessed me with ability, blessed me with good eyesight and a good pair of hands, and then I worked at the rest.” Gwynn also is survived by a daughter, Anisha. BARCELONA, Spain — With Cristiano Ronaldo missing his scoring touch, Real Madrid needed defender Pepe to score in the second half to secure a 1-0 victory at Espanyol on Sunday to pull within three points of the Spanish league co-leaders. Pepe was left unmarked to head in Luka Modrics corner kick in the 55th minute, as Cristiano Ronaldo failed to add to his league-leading 20 goals. Ronaldo is favoured to win the FIFAs Ballon dOr on Monday over Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery. The Portugal forward uncharacteristically wasted two clear scoring chances, while goalkeeper Kiko Casilla denied him on another three occasions. “The win is important because winning on the road is key to winning the league,” said Pepe, who defended Ronaldo despite his off day. “I would vote for Cristiano because what he did last year is very important and he deserves it.” Third-place Madrid took full advantage of Saturdays scoreless draw between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, which left them level at the top of the table at the leagues halfway mark. “The important thing today was to cut into Barcelona and Atleticos lead,” said Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. “We have to feel satisfied.” Also on Sunday, Real Betis remained in last place after slumping to an error-plagued 2-1 loss at home to Osasuna. Rayo Vallecano won 1-0 at Getafes foggy Alfonso Perez Coliseum to end a five-game streak without a win in league play, and Levante edged Malaga 1-0 at home thanks to David Barrals 19th-minute header. Led by striker Jhon Cordoba, Espanyol surged forward at the start and almost took the lead when Christian Stuani steered his point-blank header past the wrong side of the post four minutes in. Madrid weathered Espanyols initial push and turned to Karim Benzema and Ronaldo to provide the attacking threat. Ronaldo scuffed Benzemas pass in the 18th before drawing two awkward saves from Casilla with a powerful strike in the 31st and a dipping free kick in the 37th. Espanyol, which was without suspended forward Sergio Garcia and coach Javier Aguirre, was fortunate to make it to halftime not trailing after Angel Di Maria squandered Madrids four-on-two counterattack seconds before Benzema headed wide in the 42nd.dddddddddddd But Pepe made good on Madrids dominance by thumping Modrics pass under Casilla, who got a hand on the ball but not enough to keep it out of his net. Ronaldo had two more great looks to increase his impressive tally this season, but Casilla bettered him one-on-one in the 82nd before saving Benzemas shot in the 89th and watching Ronaldo fire the rebound wide with the goalmouth beckoning. Nothing went Betis way against Osasuna, a direct relegation rival, in a game both sides finished with 10 men. Betis conceded Roberto Torres header within two minutes, had Jose “Nono” Delgado dismissed with his second yellow card in the 38th, and saw Jordi Figueras score an own goal in the 57th. And when Osasuna goalkeeper Andres Fernandez gave them a sliver of hope in the 62nd when he was red carded for fouling Ruben Castro in the area, Castro deflated the crowd at Benito Villamarin Stadium by sending his penalty kick off the crossbar. Jorge Molina pulled one back in the 80th but Osasuna had two opportunities to widen the margin before the final whistle. The demoralizing loss left Betis winless in its last 12 league matches and seven points from safety. “We took a step backward today,” said Betis coach Juan Carlos Garrido. “I wont deny it. It was important to win today, and besides, clearly our first half of the season was very poor. There has to be a radical turnaround in every facet for us to remain in the first division.” Osasuna stayed unbeaten in four rounds and edged five points clear of the drop. Rayos win at Getafe still left it in the relegation zone. Forward Alberto Bueno scored what proved to be the winner in the 29th after Alejandro Galvez was quick to cross a rebounded shot. Levante climbed past Malaga into the middle of the standings. ’ ’ ’

The BC Lions will have to look elsewhere to find someone to run their offence as current TSN analyst Paul LaPolice has turned down their vacant offensive coordinator position. The Vancouver Province had reported the Lions interest in having LaPolice replace former offensive coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine, who parted ways with the team in the offseason following their loss in the Western semi-final. LaPolice was last in the league as head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. jerseys from china . Marcus Smart and Markel Brown scored 25 points apiece and the Cowboys (5-0) cruised past South Florida 93-67 in another lopsided early-season matchup on Monday night. It was Oklahoma States first game since a 21-point rout of then-11th-ranked Memphis, which had been expected be the Cowboys first real test. “I thought we got just an incredible team effort by everybody. Everybody contributed, but I thought Markel Brown had one of the best games Ive seen from an individual in a long time. You look at the stat line … thats an incredible performance,” Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said. In addition to going 5 of 6 from behind the 3-point and making 9 of 15 shots overall, the 6-foot-3 Brown had eight rebounds, seven assists, two steals, three blocks and no turnovers. “Weve been playing great basketball so far. … Were just trying to stay humble, trying to stay out of the media looking at all different sorts of things about how great this team can be,” Brown said. “Obviously, we know how great we can be. Whether we put it together is on us.” There were eight lead changes in the opening minutes, however Smart put a big exclamation mark on a 23-point opening-half with a buzzer-beating shot from beyond half-court to put Oklahoma State up by 16 at halftime. That was as close as South Florida (4-1) would get the rest of the way. USF Coach Stan Heath said Oklahoma State showed once again that it is far from a one-man show. “The thing that I was concerned about was focusing a lot of attention on Marcus Smart, knowing that several other guys are very, very good basketball players,” Heath said. “Markel Brown, I think, is one of the more underrated players around the country. He really shot the lights out tonight. … and we couldnt rattle him, couldnt force him into turnovers,” Heath added. "They look like a team that was in mid to late-season form.&quuot; John Egbunu led USF with 15 points and eight rebounds.dddddddddddd Victor Rudd had 14 points and Chris Perry finished with 10. “Theyre going to win a lot of games, and were happy with this victory because I think we beat a good team tonight,” Ford said. Smart only took three shots in the second half and didnt score until making a pair of free throws with 3:22 remaining in the game. By that time the lead was up to 89-63, Smart left the game and the only remaining question is whether Oklahoma State would score over 100 for the third time in five games. The Cowboys began the night averaging 102 points after beating Mississippi Valley State, Utah Valley, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Memphis by an average of 41 points per game. Smart scored a career-high 39 points during last weeks 101-80 victory over Memphis, helping his team climb two spots in the latest rankings. Oklahoma State will spend the rest of the week in Florida, where it will play three more games in the Old Spice Classic at Disney World, beginning with a Thanksgiving Day matchup against Purdue. LeBryan Nash scored 15 points and Brian Williams had 13 for Oklahoma State. Smart finished 8 of 16 from the field and had four assists, four steals and three rebounds. “I was anxious to see how we would respond,” Ford said. “When theyre locked in, when theyre really locked in, were a pretty good basketball team.” The 6-foot-4 Smart, who decided to remain in school rather than enter the NBA draft after the Cowboys early exit from the NCAA tournament last season, made 8 of 13 shots in the opening half. The only 3-pointer he made came on a heave from beyond midcourt to finish a 14-5 spurt that opened a 51-35 halftime lead. South Florida, which was unbeaten through four games for only the eighth time in the programs 43-year history, fell to 5-39 against ranked opponents in seven seasons under coach Stan Heath. The Bulls have only been 5-0 or better twice, the last time 12 years ago. ’ ’ ’
