PHILADELPHIA — The struggling Phillies have placed Laynce Nix on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left calf and called up three players from the minors. A reserve first baseman and outfielder, Nix is batting .326 with two homers and 11 RBIs. Philadelphia called up relievers Jake Diekman and Raul Valdes, and infielder Hector Luna from Triple-A Lehigh Valley before Friday nights game against the San Diego Padres. The team sent relievers Brian Sanches and Joe Savery to its top farm club. The 25-year-old Diekman was 1-0 with five saves and a 0.59 ERA in 13 games at Triple-A, striking out 22 and walking three in 15 1-3 innings. Valdes, 34, was 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 11 games. He has pitched in 54 major league games. The 32-year-old Luna, who had played in 311 big league games, hit .274 with 12 RBIs in 29 games at Lehigh Valley. NEW YORK - Alex Rodriguezs grievance hearing to overturn his 211-game suspension ended Thursday when both sides rested their cases, a day after the New York Yankees third baseman angrily walked out and decided not to testify in his own defence. The sides set a schedule to file briefs and reply briefs next month, which will close the record and submit the matter to arbitrator Fredric Horowitz. His decision on whether to uphold or alter the discipline for the three-time AL MVP likely will be made in January, a person familiar with the proceedings told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized. Rodriguezs lawyers already are vowing to challenge the ruling in federal court, where judges usually are reticent to overturn an arbitration decision unless there is a finding the arbitrator was biased, exceeded his authority or failed to comply with the rules agreed to by the parties. The exact timing of a decision is uncertain. Baseballs Joint Drug Agreement states the arbitrator shall make “all reasonable efforts” to close the record in time to permit a decision within 25 days of the start of the hearing. But in this case, the hearing began Sept. 30, making that timetable impossible to meet. After the arbitrator renders his decision, the written opinion is to be issued within 30 days. It is unclear if Horowitz will issue his written opinion simultaneously with his decision. The timing of the case could complicate planning for the Yankees, who dont know if they will have to pay Rodriguez his $25 million salary and are unsure whether they will need a different starting third baseman. Rodriguez was suspended by Major League Baseball on Aug. 5 for alleged violations of its drug policy and labour agreement stemming from the leagues investigation of the Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic in Florida. The players association filed a grievance, and because Rodriguez was a first-time offender of the drug agreement, the discipline automatically was stayed pending a resolution of the grievance. Horowitz heard the case in a trio of four-day sessions, with management presenting its case from Sept. 30-Oct. 3 and Oct. 15-18. Rodriguezs side then took its turn during the first four days of this week. While Horowitz had set aside six additional days for testimony through Wednesday, that time was not needed. Rodriguez left in the middle of the 11th session Wednesday, furious the arbitrator refused to order baseball Commissioner Bud Selig to testify. Rodriguez and his lawyers then went on radio and television, accusing Selig of bias and the entire arbitration process of being flawed. His lawyers returned without him Thursday to complete their case, and MLB started and finished its rebuttal. At the end of the hearing, the sides learned union head Michael Weiner had died from the brain tumour he was diagnosed with 15 months ago. Outside MLBs offices, representatives of the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization, including state Sen. Ruben Diaz, held a prayer vigil to express opposition to Rodriguezs discipline. Rodriguez lawyer James McCarroll issued a statement Thursday pointing out that this case is the first grievance under the drug agreement involving discipline that didnt stem from a positive test and involved “the commissioners discretion and decision-making.” While he said the commissioner in the past “was harshly criticized in the arbitrators decision for not voluntarily appearing at a grievance,” that statement appears to refer to arbitrator George Nicolaus 1987 decision cutting Peter Ueberroths drug suspension of pitcher LaMarr Hoyt from one season to 60 days. While Horowitz has issued an order for the proceeding to be confidential, Rodriguezs lawyers have said they may release some of the evidence Friday. Rodriguez spokesman Ron Berkowitz said no decision had been made. “Its uncertain,” he said. “Theyre still weighing their options of what they can and cannot release.” . ST. LOUIS - Under coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead, the St. Louis Rams refuse to stay put on draft day. The Rams got help for quarterback Sam Bradford, trading up eight spots with Buffalo and taking speedy West Virginia wide receiver Tavon Austin with the eighth overall selection Thursday night. They surrendered two picks in that deal and got two back from the Atlanta Falcons when they traded down eight spots, and then used No. 30 to get Georgia linebacker Alec Ogletree. “I would have to say were very excited, to say the least,” Fisher said. “It was a scenario we had been discussing for several days. We got two very explosive, talented young players that are going to help us right away.” Ogletree, whose draft stock was probably hurt by an in-season suspension and a DUI arrest a week before the combine, is expected to fill a starting vacancy at outside linebacker. Without those problems, Fisher said Ogletree would have been a top 15 pick at worst. “I was just happy to hear my name called,” Ogletree said in a conference call with reporters in St. Louis. “I was dumb. I made a mistake and I just want to move forward.” Austin was among the fastest players at the combine with an official 40-yard dash time of 4.34 seconds, and with gaudy statistics to match that made him the first skill position player taken. His 2,910 all-purpose yards as a senior were fourth-most in NCAA history and he totalled 17 touchdowns last season, including one each on punt and kickoff returns. Snead said the Bills had signalled the Rams earlier in the week that theyd be interested in moving down to acquire picks. “We had a feeling interest was increasing,” Fisher said. “We felt a few days ago that we were probably going to have to go up and get him.” The deal with the Falcons had been brewing the last couple weeks. Fisher is confident Ogletree can play outside linebacker given he was a safety his freshman year in college. “We had Alec way up there,” Fisher said. “People are going to make mistakes. This was a maturity issue.” Despite a lack of size, the 5-8, 172-pound Austin didnt miss a game in high school or college. His survival plan for the NFL was simple: “Get down when I need to get down. Step out of bounds when I need to.” When Snead telephoned with the news, it was no surprise. Austin got positive signals during his visit to St. Louis and when the Rams came to Morgantown, W.Va., for a private visit just before the draft. At the Rams pre-draft news conference, Fisher said he had no problem taking a shorter player at wide receiver because the 6-4 Bradford would be able to find him. “Me and the coaches just clicked,” Austin said. “I had a good feeling just off the vibe they were giving. It was all smiles and everything when I was there.” The Rams have been active on both draft days under Fisher and Snead. Last year, they traded the second overall pick to the Redskins for a batch of premium picks, including the 22nd overall pick this year. The Bills also got the Rams second and seventh-round picks in the deal and the two teams swapped third-round picks. In their second deal, the Rams got the Falcons 30th overall pick plus Atlantas third- and sixth-round selections. They enter the second day with no second-round picks. Austin was considered the best overall wide receiver in the draft. He was an all-purpose threat at West Virginia, topping 100 receptions his junior and senior seasons with 20 touchdowns, averaging 8.9 yards on 72 carries last year and totalling four kickoff returns for touchdown. Austin holds school records with 7,286 all-purpose yards and 288 receptions. He anticipates getting used all over the field just as in college after Rams coaches discussed roles in the backfield and return game. “So, they definitely have a plan for me,” Austin said. Bradford was the No. 1 overall pick in 2010, but the Rams had taken defensive linemen in the first round four of the previous six years. Wide receiver has been a position of need for several seasons for St. Louis, who hadnt taken one in the first round since taking Torry Holt in the first round in 1999 — the year the Rams won their lone Super Bowl. The Rams needed one more than ever heading into draft day after Danny Amendola left in free agency, leaving them with a crop of youngsters led by Chris Givens, a fourth-rounder last season. Last year, the Rams got a starting defensive tackle in Michael Brockers with the 14th overall pick and impact cornerback Janoris Jenkins was among their three second-rounders. Ogletree played both middle linebacker and outside linebacker at Georgia and said hed play wherever the team wanted him. The Rams already have a fixture in the middle with James Laurinaitis. “They really liked me and took a chance on me,” Ogletree said. “I can make plays all over the field.” . Nick Bonino and Matt Beleskey also scored in regulation and Frederik Andersen stopped 27 shots for the Ducks, who will face Dallas in the opening round of the post-season. Anze Kopitar had two goals, including the tying one with 3:12 left in the third period, and Dustin Brown also scored for Los Angeles. He then kicked nine goals in succession — two conversions and seven penalties — before being replaced in the 62nd minute, three points short of the Highlanders record for most points in a match.TORONTO — If the league-leading Indiana Pacers provided the perfect gauge for just how much the Toronto Raptors have improved, the answer was: plenty. DeMar DeRozan poured in 26 points to lead the red-hot Raptors to a resounding 95-82 win over Indiana on Wednesday, handing the Pacers just their sixth loss of the season. “We work extremely hard every day so that we understand that if we go out there and play with the same intensity that we do in practice, when were going at each other, we can beat anybody,” DeRozan said. “Thats the mindset that we go in with when we play these opponents.” The Raptors victory was their fourth in a row, eighth in their last 10 outings, and ninth in 12 games since the trade that sent Rudy Gay to the Sacramento Kings. Toronto also snapped Indianas five-game winning streak. Terrence Ross added 18 points for Toronto (15-15), while Kyle Lowry had a season-high 14 assists to go with 13 points, and Jonas Valanciunas scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds. “Everybody is playing for each other, nobody has any secret agendas, everybody wants the same goal,” Ross said. “Were all on the same page, and thats something were getting better at.” Raptors coach Dwane Casey had talked before the game about the chance for his players to test themselves against the best in the league, to see how much theyd improved and how far they still had to go. “We did a good job, the guys battled,” Casey said afterward. “We came in hungry and fought for 48 minutes, stayed with the game plan and executed.” Roy Hibbert scored 16 for the Pacers (25-6) before fouling out with 3:25 to go, while Paul George added 12 and Danny Granger finished with 11. The Raptors confidence was soaring going into Wednesdays game, and just a night earlier they were down by five heading into the fourth quarter at Chicago before rallying for an 85-79 victory over the Bulls. Theyd shown more fight in the past couple of weeks than in recent memory, and were making a habit of fourth-quarter comebacks. But they didnt need one Wednesday. The Raptors led by as much as nine points against a Pacers team that came into the game with a 9-0 record against Atlantic Division opponents, and fought back from a Pacers rally to lead 66-63 going into the fourth quarter. They found another gear down the stretch. Back-to-back buckets by DeRozan then a steal by Ross that turned into a Lowry basket with 2:54 to play had the crowd on its feet screaming and put Toronto up by 11. Affterward, Pacers guard George Hill said the Raptors “beat us at our own game.dddddddddddd.” “They played better than us tonight,” Hill said. “Normally we come out and have a tremendous third and fourth quarter but tonight they hit first.” The thrilled Air Canada Centre crowd of 18,271 stood and cheered the Raptors off the floor after the final buzzer. The Raptors won with crisp ball movement, doling out 27 assists on 34 made field goals, against one of the best defensive teams in the league. They were also solid on defence. “It says a lot,” DeRozan said on his teams defensive effort. “Were going to go out there and battle with the best of them night in and night out. We dont care who you throw out there in front of us, were understand theyre going to throw a punch, and were going to throw punches back.” Lowry led the way in defensive play — the point guard who tops the team in taking charges took one on Hibberts sixth foul. “You just sacrifice yourself for the benefit of the team. Thats what were all doing out here, sacrificing themselves and their game to be a better team,” Lowry said. The players praised the noisy crowd that was on its feet for the final few minutes. “Honestly, it was probably the best crowd Ive seen since opening night of last year,” Lowry said. “Thats what we need in this building. We want our fans to have a reason to cheer, and I think were giving them a reason to cheer.” The Raptors opened with one of the best all-around quarters of the season, with 10 assists on 11 made field goals. They fell behind by six early but outscored the Pacers 24-8 to the end of the quarter to lead 26-18 heading into the second. A three-pointer by Raptors newcomer Greivis Vasquez gave Toronto a nine-point lead early in the second, but the Pacers parlayed 10 Raptors turnovers into nine points, and Indiana took a 44-40 lead into the dressing room at the break. The Pacers were the ones turning the ball over in the third, with the Raptors scoring 14 points on seven Indiana giveaways. Tyler Hansbrough tied the game with a dunk with 1:08 left in the quarter, then John Salmons drained a three to send the Raptors into the fourth up by three points. NOTES: The Raptors are in Washington on Friday to open a three-game road trip against three tough Eastern Conference teams. Theyll play at Miami on Sunday, then Indiana on Tuesday before returning home to host Detroit on Jan. 8. . . The Pacers beat Toronto 91-84 in Indiana on Nov. 8. Late coach Pat Burns has been elected for induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2014 alongside Dominik Hasek, Peter Forsberg, Mike Modano and Rob Blake and legendary NHL referee Bill McCreary. The official induction ceremony will be held on November 17. The three-time Jack Adams Award winner for coach of the year passed away in 2010 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He enters the Hall in the Builders category. Burns won 501 games in 14 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens (1988-1992), Toronto Maple Leafs (1992-1996), Boston Bruins (1997-2001) and New Jersey Devils (2002-2004). He won the Stanley Cup with the Devils in 2003. The former Gatineau, Quebec police officer had plenty of proponents for his inclusion in the Hall of Fame, even before he passed away. “Pat Burns should have been in the Hall of Fame this year,” former Stanley Cup-winning coach and incumbent Conservative Senator Jacques Demers said in 2010. “Not because he was dying, but because he was a Hall of Fame coach. Five hundred wins, a Stanley Cup, three times coach of the year – to me it would have been so special for him, before he died, to be in the Hall of Fame.” It is the second consecutive year a builder has been posthumously elected after Fred Shero, back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, was inducted in 2013. Hasek – a six-time Vezina Trophy winner, Hart Trophy winner and two-time Cup champ – may have been the easiest player selection for this class. The Czech Republic native won the NHLs award for best goaltender a staggering six times in eight seasons as a member of the Buffalo Sabres. He also played for the Detroit Red Wings from 2001-2008, where he won two championships (2002, 2008). “The Dominator” is 11th all-time on the NHL wins list with 389 and had seven straight seasons with a save percentage of .930 or better. “For me its a no-brainer,” former coach of the Sabres Lindy Ruff said earlier this year. He brought the Sabres out of obscurity and led the club to a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1999 against the Dallas Stars. He narrowly missed out on his first championship as a result of Brett Hulls infamous “foot-in-the-crease” overtime goal. Hasek would go on to win his first Cup as a starter with the Red Wings in 2002 and the second came as a backup to the championship team of 2008. Also cracking the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility is two-time Stanley Cup Champion and Olympic gold medalist Peter Forsberg. Forsberg began what would become an impactful, yet injury-shortened career, with the Quebec Nordiques after being acquired in the blockbuster trade that sent Eric Lindros to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1992. The Calder, Art Ross and Hart Trophy winner scored 885 points in 708 regular-season games in his 14 seasons with the Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche, Flyers and Nashville Predators. He won two Stanley Cups with the Avalanche. Forsberg also won gold medals in mens ice hockey for Sweden at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer and 2006 Games in Torino. He was plagued by many injuries over the course of his career, but it was tendon problems in his left foot that haunted him for most of his playing days and eventually forced him to retire. Another new candidate making the grade in 2014 is the most prolific American scorer in NHL history, Mike Modano. The former captain and last active player to have played for the Minnesota North Stars is the highest scoring American in league history with 561 goals, 813 assists and 1374 points in 1499 games. Modano, who appeared in eight All-Star Games, holds Stars franchise records for regular-season and playoff games played (1459, 174), goals (557, 58), assists (802, 87) and points (1359, 145), and also led the club to the Stanley Cup in 1999 over Hasek and the Sabres. The last player on the list had to wait an extra year, but in only his second year of eligibility for Los Angeles Kings captain Rob Blake is entering the Hall of Fame. While many thought Blake was a lock for last years ballot, it turned out there were too many deserving candidates and not enough spots to include the 6-foot-4 defenceman. Blake appeared in six All-Star Games (1994, 1999-2003) and won the Norris Trophy as the NHLs top defenceman in 1998. He also won his first and only Stanley Cup as a member of the Avalanche in 2001. In 20 seasons with the Kings, Avalanche and San Jose Sharks, Blake accumulated 240 goals, 537 points and 777 points in 1270 games. And last, but certainly not least, legendary referee Bill McCreary is getting his call to the Hall. McCreary officiated 1,737 regular season games, 297 playoff games and one All-Star Game in the NHL, as well as participating in the 1998 Nagano Olympics, the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics and the 2012 Vancouver Olympics. His model of consistency is no secret as he has officiated a Stanley Cup Final-record 44 games, including 13 straight finals from 1995-2007 and his last series in 2009. McCrearys signature puck flip before the opening faceoff became a signature part of every game he refereed. CHICAGO — Joakim Noah and Jimmy Butler understand it. The real victory for the Chicago Bulls will come when theyre knocking the Miami Heat out of the playoffs, not during the regular season — no matter how charged the atmosphere is. Even so, theyll take this. Noah had 20 points and 12 rebounds, D.J. Augustin scored 22 and the Chicago Bulls beat the Miami Heat 95-88 in overtime Sunday after Butler blocked LeBron James at the end of regulation. “I want what they have — a championship,” Noah said. “One day, were going to have to get through those guys.” The Heat have owned them when it counts in recent seasons. With a healthy Derrick Rose and the No. 1 seed in 2011, Chicago fell to Miami in the Eastern Conference finals. Last year, with Rose out, the Heat knocked off the Bulls in the second round on the way to their second straight championship. “Its still a good win,” Butler said. “It gives us confidence we can beat them. But … in the playoffs, like Thibs said, we cant go around them; youre going to have to go through them.” Dwyane Wade scored 25 for Miami, but with James struggling again, the Heat dropped their third straight to match their longest losing streak of the season. James scored 17 points on 8-of-23 shooting and couldnt come through after Miami blew a 12-point lead down the stretch. With a chance to win it at the end of regulation, he got stripped by Butler on a layup attempt. In overtime, it was all Bulls. Chicago outscored Miami 9-2, starting with Augustins 3 just under a minute in. Butler added a jumper from the wing, Noah scored on a putback and Butler hit two free throws to make it 95-86 with 1:33 left before James made a layup. Noah also had seven assists and five blocks with his dad — tennis great Yannick Noah — looking on. Butler added 16 points and 11 rebounds while containing James. Wade tried to carry the load for Miami, particularly in the early going. Chris Bosh scored 15, but James had another rough afternoon. The four-time MVP is 23 for 59 in the three games since his career-high and franchise-record 61-point effort against Charlotte last week.dddddddddddd James also went without a mask from the start to protect his broken nose, after ditching it during the previous game. He said it was simply uncomfortable, so he decided to play without it even though he was not cleared to do so. The Bulls got back into it after the Heat led by 12 late in the third quarter. Augustins 3-pointer and Butlers steal and two free throws put Chicago ahead 75-74 midway through the fourth. It was 82-82 with just over two minutes left when Noah blocked a layup by James. Taj Gibson raced the other way for a thunderous dunk while getting fouled by Mario Chalmers, drawing a roar from the crowd. James tied it again on a layup with 1:10 left. Wade then stole the ball from Butler and hit two free throws after getting fouled inside by Noah to give Miami an 86-84 lead with 29.2 seconds remaining. But Kirk Hinrich quickly scooped in a runner to knot it at 86 with 20.1 seconds left. After a timeout, James took the inbounds pass and got stripped driving for a layup along the right side by Butler to send this one to overtime. “I dropped the ball. Its like a double entendre,” James said. “I actually dropped the ball, but I dropped the ball on my team. I had it. Thats a great play. I give a lot of credit to Jimmy. He got his hand on the ball, but I had the lane. I had the layup.” NOTES: Things got a bit heated between James and Butler late in the first half. They got tangled going for a loose ball near the Heat basket after James tried to corral a long pass. As they hit the court, Butlers foot hit James nose, and James appeared to push him. Both players got technicals. “Two competitors were down there,” Butler said. “Whatever happened, happened. But I dont back down.” James brushed it off, saying, “Just two competitors going at it, one trying not to give an edge.” … The Bulls and Heat split the season series at 2-2. But to get a shot off on goal, you’re first going to have to beat a defender or two. Centre halves and fullbacks are more intelligent and appear to have a better

understanding of when to stand off and when to go for the tackle than they did previously. EA has balanced this, however, with greater intuition for attacking runs and

less clumsy dribbling – a welcome addition, considering the sometimes “clumsy” feel of last year’s game. Players now turn faster and more precisely, giving you a

better chance to make it out of tight spaces.

It’s all about finesse
Off the fifa 15 coins, the menus feel less laggy than last year’s game and the ability to save up to three custom team sheets, each with their own formation, strategy and

player instructions, should please the tacticians among us. Plus, the addition of two new team mentalities, including “park the bus”, should please Jose Mourinho

wannabes. For the rest of us, EA’s much-touted “player intelligence” means that teams will automatically change their strategy according to the events and

importance of the match. Need nothing less than a win to clinch promotion? Tied 1-1 with ten game minutes to go? Your men will automatically get forward like a team

possessed, or at least like Man City against QPR in the dying moments of the 2011/12 Premier League season.

BOSTON — Kris Humphries didnt play 20 minutes in a game for the whole month of November. Five times this season he never got off the bench at all. He hadnt scored in double digits in the first 20 games before contributing 18 to the Boston Celtics 106-98 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. And one more thing: He never complained. “When were winning and stuff, I dont like to focus on me,” Humphries said after the Celtics ran off the first 14 points to win their second straight game and maintain their awkward hold on the Atlantic Division lead. “Were at the top of the division. Thats all thats important.” Jordan Crawford had 22 points and eight assists and Avery Bradley scored 18 for Boston, which has a 9-12 record that would rank no better than fifth in any division in the Western Conference. Humphries scored eight points in the last 4 1/2 minutes of the third quarter, when Boston turned back a Denver run that cut the deficit to three points. “Our starters played fantastic at the start of the game and got us out to a huge lead. In the second half it was our bench that got us back out to the lead,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. “Kris was a big part of that.” A nine-year veteran who came to Boston in the trade that sent Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to the Nets, Humphries has struggled to find a role on a young, rebuilding team. He has gotten more time since an ankle injury to Kelly Olynyk has kept the first-round draft pick out since Nov. 23. “Hes done a good job for us,” Stevens said. “I think that speaks to his professionalism, too, because this hasnt always been easy for him. But hes been a pro about everything.” Ty Lawson scored 20 points before leaving late in the third quarter with a left hamstring injury, and J.J. Hickson had 17 for Denver. The Nuggets had won seven straight games but have now lost two in a row to Cleveland and Boston, two Eastern Conference teams that were at or below a .400 winning percentage. “Second consecutive game in a row that we basically got beat up, got hit first,” Denver coach Brian Shaw said. “We told our team before the game started tonight that regardless of their record, theyre going to come out and fight to stay in first place. And they did that.” The Celtics opened the game with a 14-0 run, getting six of Bradleys 13 first-quarter points in the first 4 minutes, before Hickson made one of two free throws with 7:20 left for Denvers first point. Boston expanded the lead to 24 by scoring 12 of the last 13 points in the quarter, including a 30-foot 3-pointer by Crawford just before the buzzer. In all, Denver shot 23.8 per cent in the first, getting just two baskets from the starters, while falling behind 39-15. Boston shot 65.4 per cent to match a season high for points in a quarter it set in the fourth during Tuesday nights victory over Milwaukee; the Celtics topped their season high for a half, taking a 64-44 lead into the break. The Nuggets scored the first nine points of the second half — six from Hickson — during a 16-2 run that made it 66-60 with 8:38 left in the third. They eventually cut it to three points before Humphries made a pair of baskets and Bradley hit a 3 to make it 83-73 with just more than 2 minutes left in the quarter. NOTES: Before the game, the Celtics observed a moment of silence for South African president Nelson Mandela, calling him “a friend of the NBA.” … Nuggets guard Nate Robinson, a member of the Celtics when they made the NBA Finals in 2010, got a smattering of applause when he came off the bench in the first quarter. … With the back-to-back losses, Denver fell to 5-2 against the East. SAN FRANCISCO — After a broken right ankle with Atlanta last year threatened to end his career, Tim Hudson has emerged as one of baseballs best and most surprising off-season additions. Hudson turned in another vintage performance to start this season, tossing seven innings to lead the San Francisco Giants past the Chicago Cubs 4-0 on Tuesday night. “I couldnt have asked for a better start to my season with a new team, new organization, new teammates,” said Hudson, who signed a $23 million, two-year contract with the Giants in November. “I hope they dont think Im going to be this good all year.” Hudson (5-2) allowed six hits, struck out five and walked none. The 38-year-old has allowed two earned runs or fewer in nine of his 10 starts, and he has pitched at least seven innings eight times. “Hes getting better with age,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. Buster Posey drove in two runs, and Michael Morse and Pablo Sandoval singled home a run each to help the Giants (33-19) hold on to the best record in the majors. Jeremy Affeldt pitched a perfect eighth and Jean Machi pitched a perfect ninth to close out the Cubs, who will try again to win their first road series since last September in Wednesdays finale. Jake Arrieta (1-1) gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked one but got no support with Hudson on the mound. “Hes a buzz saw,” Arrieta said. San Franciscos most reliable starter also might be its most unlikely. In a rotation that includes All-Stars Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner and two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, Hudson has a 1.92 ERA. San Francisco is 5-0 in Hudsons home starts and 7-2 overall. That includes a rain-suspended game in his last start at Colorado, when he allowed one run in three innings coming off a hip injury. Hudson joked that he tricks hitters with “smoke and mirrors” now before admitting that hes just learned to be a better pitcher at this point in his career. He said hes relying more on scouting reports, location and pitching to contact than trying to overpower hitters. “From a command standpoint, this is probably the best Ive been,” Hudson said. The three-time All-Star, who turns 39 in July, showed no signs of rust when he returned to the mound at pitcher-friendly AT&T Park. Hudson retired the first eight batters until Arrieta grounded a single up the middle. He allowed two baseunners in the third and a one-out double to Mike Olt off the centre-field wall in the fifth but quickly induced two outs each time. “It was all Hudson. He did a great job,” Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. Hudson left to a standing ovation from the announced sellout crowd of 41,060 after getting pinch-hitter Chris Coghlan to ground out with a runner on first to end the seventh. San Francisco supplied all the runs Hudson needed in the first, when Angel Pagan singled and scored on Poseys sacrifice fly and Morse hit an RBI single. Posey hit another sacrifice fly to left with the bases loaded in the fifth before Sandovals bloop single extended San Franciscos lead to 4-0. Hudson handled the Cubs the rest of the way. “Hes had quite a career to this point,” Bochy said. “Hes got a lot of baseball left.” NOTES: Cain, who missed his last start with a strained right hamstring, will throw a bullpen session Wednesday and is expected to make his next start Saturday at St. Louis. … Cubs reliever Wesley Wright was placed on the paternity leave list before the game, and Blake Parker was promoted from Triple-A Iowa. DeMar DeRozan scored 19 points, Terrence Ross had 18 and Toronto, after opening a 25-point lead, settled for a 100-90 victory over the Nuggets on Friday night. “We will take the W, but it was not a quality finish,” Casey said. “I let the players know I was disappointed in the close. You cant come in and feel like you have the game won with a 20-point lead. You have to continue to execute, be strong with the ball and continue to execute defensively if you want to be serious about winning in this league.” Jonas Valanciunas and Kyle Lowry added 13 points apiece for the Raptors, who snapped a nine-game losing streak in the Mile High City dating to 2003. Still, Caseys postgame critique on his teams fourth-quarter play — the Raptors were outscored 20-14 in the period — outweighed any sense of relief over the end of the streak. “We have to finish a lot better,” Lowry said. “This is the NBA. Teams are going to make a run. Were not going to be negative. We won the game. But we have to finish better than that.” The Nuggets were dealing with their own problems. They announced during the game that guard Nate Robinson had season-ending surgery earlier Friday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Robinson was injured in a spill underneath the Nuggets basket during the first quarter of Wednesday nights loss to the Charlotte Bobcats. The Nuggets also were without leading scorer Ty Lawson, who missed his second consecutive game Friday with a left rotator cuff strain. “We dont want anybody to feel sorry for us and we wont feel sorry for ourselves,” Nuggets coach Brian Shaw said. “We just have to continue to fight, stay positive, keep working and just be more fundamentally sound.” J.J. Hickson and Evan Fournier led the Nuggets with 18 points apiece. Hickson also had 13 rebounds. Randy Foye, normally a shooting guard switched to the point in the absence of Lawson and Robinson, had 10 points and a career-high 16 assists. But he also committed eight of the Nuggets 26 turnovvers, which led to 29 points for Toronto.dddddddddddd “Randy played 43 minutes, Evan 38 minutes, and theyre not accustomed to playing that many minutes as well,” Shaw said. “They started getting tired, then we started losing our fundamentals and throwing the ball all over the place. That was our biggest thing tonight.” Hickson said it is also going to take some time for players to adjust to new, sometimes unfamiliar roles thrust on them by the backcourt injuries. “Its going to be a process,” Hickson said. “I cant say its going to be a long process, because we dont have much time. It has to be a quick process. But I think once guys get adjusted and settled in, well be good.” Toronto moved to a season high four games above .500 (25-21) and tied a franchise record with its 11th win in January. The Raptors also won 11 games in January 2002. Leading by seven at halftime, the Raptors put together an 11-2 run late in the third quarter to go up 84-68 with 2:46 left in the period. DeRozan ignited the surge by driving through traffic and putting in a reverse layup off the glass and helped keep it going by knocking down a pair of jumpers. By the start of the fourth quarter, the Raptors led by 16 points and 50 seconds later, Valanciunas dunked to stretch Torontos advantage to 90-70. After Timofey Mozgov scored on a turnaround jumper for Denver, Toronto reeled off seven straight points, including a 3-pointer by John Salmons for a 97-72 lead with 8:47 left. The Nuggets made a late push with a 14-2 run cutting it to 99-86 on a dunk by Kenneth Faried with 3:32 remaining. But Ross then blocked Fourniers driving layup attempt and after Valanciunas made one of two free throws, the Nuggets lost another possession on a turnover by Foye, failing to get the deficit under double digits. The Raptors turned a steal into a breakaway dunk by Ross for a 60-53 lead at halftime. The rim-rattling jam brought the Raptors bench to its feet. NOTES: Foye had 11 assists in the first half, most by a Nuggets player in a half since Steve Blake had 11 on Feb. 14, 2007. … Toronto won for the first time in Denver since an 81-74 victory on Dec. 30, 2003. … Hickson has had a double-double in 12 of his last 23 games. SAN FRANCISCO — Paul Goldschmidt realizes his good fortunes against Tim Lincecum could turn at any moment, so hes the last one who will be caught celebrating a remarkable streak of home runs against the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner. Goldschmidt did it again Wednesday night, showing he has some freak in him, too. The slugger hit a three-run homer and sacrifice fly to pound Lincecum early, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Francisco Giants 7-3 for a nice lift after a slow start. Gerardo Parra hit a two-run homer and finished a double shy of the cycle, while Eric Chavez added an RBI triple for his first hit in his first start of the year for Arizona. Goldschmidt is batting .542 (13-for-24) with seven homers and 17 RBIs all-time against Lincecum, including a two-run homer last week at Chase Field. His latest homer marked the 22nd time an opposing right-handed hitter homered to AT&T Parks right field. “I was kind of worried it may go foul, but I think the wind actually helped keep it fair. It was right down the line,” Goldschmidt said. “You know Lincecums a very good pitcher. So you just go up there and try to have a good at-bat and try to hit the ball hard, and fortunately I was able to get one there in the first inning. It really doesnt change. Try to have a good at-bat, try to keep it simple.” Goldschmidt has been such a nemesis for Lincecum, the exasperated pitcher said last week he might have to throw underhanded to try to stymie the slugger. “Its just unexplainable,” Chavez said. “I have no idea.” Michael Morse and Buster Posey hit solo homers against Bronson Arroyo (1-0), who won his third straight decision against San Francisco. Arroyo was staked to a nice lead early and worked five innings to earn his first win since joining the D-backs in February. He had a no-decision against the Giants last Thursday. The right-hander allowed six hits and three runs, struck out two and walked one. He beat the Giants twice last season, including a seven-hitter at AT&T Park last July 22 with the Reds for his sixth career shutout in an 11-0 victory. Josh Collmenter, who soon could join the struggling Arizona rotation, pitched four scoreless innings of relief for his first major league save. Goldschmidt got things going at AT&T Park again. Parra led off the game with a triple, Martin Prado walked and Goldschmidt sent a 1-1 fastball into the elevated right-field arcade. He added a sacrifice fly in the third, then was booed each time he stepped into the batters box in the late innings. “Hopefully the streak continues,” manager Kirk Gibson said. “Its amazing.” Parra connected for his first homer of the year with two outs in the fourth. Angel Pagan singled in the first and has hit safely in all nine games for the Giants, batting .462 with seven multihit games Lincecum (0-1) lasted just four innings, tagged for seven runs and seven hits. The right-hander received a $35 million, two-year deal in late October to stay put with San Francisco rather than test free agency. He said he might be trying too hard against Goldschmidt. “I just have to start leaning on a little bit more of my strength and not necessarily his weaknesses,” Lincecum said. “I know hes got some holes here and there, but I have to mix up my pitch counts and my pitch routines.” Pablo Sandoval went 1 for 4 and is off to a quiet start hitting .143 for San Francisco. Manager Bruce Bochy is confident that even though the Giants have tabled talks about a contract extension for the third baseman, it wont affect the 2012 World Series MVP on the field. Notes: After the early struggles by the D-backs rotation, Arizona officials are discussing changes. Gibson expects Trevor Cahill (0-3) to make his next start Sunday, but Collmenter will be stretched out and threw 53 pitches. … Ryan Vogelsong (0-0) pitches Thursday for the Giants against Randall Delgado (0-1). … The Giants will hold “Farewell to the Stick” night Thursday to honour their former home of Candlestick Park. ARLINGTON, Texas — Tony Romo was sick, and it wasnt because he had just watched the Oakland Raiders return a fumble for a touchdown on the opening kickoff. After the Dallas quarterback caught a virus the night before Thanksgiving, his top two running backs were there to help out. DeMarco Murray ran for three touchdowns, backup Lance Dunbar led Dallas with a career-high 82 yards rushing and the Cowboys overcame the shock of Oaklands early score to beat the Raiders 31-24 Thursday. Romo still did his part. He was behind 7-0 before taking his first snap, and his offence didnt have a yard in the second quarter when he took the field down 21-7 with less than 2 minutes remaining before halftime. Five completions from Romo later, Murray scored on a 4-yard run 10 seconds before halftime and set the stage for a second-half rally that put the Cowboys (7-5) two games above .500 for the first time since late last season. Dallas is at least temporarily ahead of Philadelphia (6-5) atop the NFC East. “To have the opening kickoff fumbled and returned for a touchdown and then be down a couple of scores in the first half, nobody blinked,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “The momentum kind of turned and I think guys started feeling pretty good and it just continued.” Dallas was without kick returner Dwayne Harris because of a hamstring injury, and rookie replacement Terrance Williams gave the Raiders a touchdown with a fumble on the opening kickoff. Greg Jenkins picked up the ball at the 23 after it squirted away from the pile and outran everyone to the pylon. The play was upheld on review after replay showed Williams knee hitting the turf just as the ball was coming out. Matt McGloin, an undrafted rookie quarterback making his third career start, had a strong first half for the Raiders. But without much help from the leagues fifth-best rushing attack, his offence stalled in the second half as Oakland (4-8) clinched an 11th straight season without a winning record since going to the Super Bowl during the 2002 season. Rashad Jennings rushed for 35 yards on 17 carries — a 2.1-yard average — and had both of Oaklands offensive touchdowns. Darren McFadden carried just five times for 13 yards in his return after missing three games with a hamstring injury. The Raiders finished with 50 yards rushing — 1 more than their season low - while the Cowboys came with the leagues 29th-ranked rushing offence and had 144 yards on the ground, their second-best total of the year. “The game boiled down to, in the second half we wore down,” said Raiders coach Dennis Allen, the leagues youngest head coach making his first appearance near the Dallas suburb of Hurst, where he grew up. “They were able to run the ball and we werent able to get off the field.” Murray had just 25 yards after his third TD, but ran for another 38 to help Dallas burn the clock with a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter. Most of the late damage came on a drive to Dan Baileys 19-yard field goal to put Dallas up by 10 with 1:56 left. Murray, who tied the score at 7-all on a 2-yard run the first play after a fumble by McGloin late in the first quarter, also had 39 yards receiving. “I was just playing like I always play,” Murray said. “Im not worried about anything else. Im just doing the best I can do and trying to help this team win.” Dunbar, who went out with a left knee sprain in the fourth quarter, sparked the tying and go-ahead touchdown drives in the second half, highlighted by a 45-yard run that led to a 4-yard scoring pass from Romo to Dez Bryant, who had seven catches for 61 yards. McGloin, who was 18 of 30 for 255 yards, converted five straight third downs with passes on a pair of touchdown drives in the second quarter. He also had a throw to Andre Holmes that was ruled a touchdown on second-and-goal from the 16. After the call was overturned on replay, Jennings scored from the 1 to put Oakland ahead 14-7. Holmes, who played seven games for Dallas last season before he was sent to the practice squad, had career highs with seven catches for 136 yards. His previous high was 33 yards. After McGloin completed a 21-yard pass to Holmes on the first play of the second half, the Raiders didnt get another first down until the fourth quarter. “We did start slow but this team is getting to that point where there is no panic anymore,” said Dallas cornerback Brandon Carr, who was burned repeatedly by Holmes but had an interception to stop a potential tying drive by the Raiders in the fourth quarter. Notes: Raiders G guard Mike Brisiel injured a knee on Oaklands first offensive play and didnt return. … CB Mike Jenkins, who spent his first five seasons with the Cowboys, had a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a forced fumble before leaving with a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter. Almost 18 months after Armstrongs seven Tour wins were wiped from the record, an independent panel created by the new International Cycling Union leadership has begun work to discover the extent of the sports past problems. “I hope that anyone who does have anything to contribute would get involved.” Froome told The Associated Press in an interview on Tuesday. The three-man Cycling Independent Reform Commission aims to investigate how doping happened from 1998-2013 and possible UCI complicity in helping Armstrong and his teams avoid scrutiny. “I am hoping that at the end of the day people will be able to say of it, Right, that was that era, we can now put that to bed and stop asking questions about it,” Froome said. Armstrong and former UCI presidents Hein Verbruggen and Pat McQuaid will be invited for confidential, closed-door interviews with the panel which is based at Lausanne, Switzerland. None of the trio has committed publicly to meeting with the panel, which is chaired by Swiss politician and prosecutor Dick Marty. Froome said the panel could engage “not just necessarily those three, but anyone really who is part of that era and can contribute to resolving it.” “Its going to be more negative publicity for the sport. Thats never good,” Froome acknowledged. The Team Sky leader, who made a winning return to racing last month at the Tour of Oman, said he had not heard much tallk about the commission among current riders, who must help restore the sports credibility.dddddddddddd “Theres a lot of really, really talented young riders coming through the system now that I believe in personally.” Froome said. “These are going to be the guys carrying the torch going forward.” Froome will be 29 when he is scheduled to start defending his Tour title on July 5 in northern England — probably with 2012 winner Bradley Wiggins alongside him. “Im confident whoever is in there, we are going to have the strongest team possible,” said Froome, whose frayed relationship with Wiggins was mended in the off-season. “He can do a lot of damage to the peloton. Hes one of the best climbers in the world and we know his time trialing ability.” Froome expects to follow the path both he and Wiggins followed to Tour success, competing in — and winning — stage-race preparations at the Tour de Romandie in Switzerland and Criterium de Dauphine in France. “I think it would be crazy to really change things up too much,” Froome said. “We found it has been a good system that has worked quite well for us.” Speaking at the Geneva Motor Show, on the sidelines of a Team Sky sponsors event, Froome said extra work being a Tour champion was “a bit of a juggling act” with his training program. Still, the Oman victory suggests he got the balance right. “It just backs up that I have had a really good winter preparation,” Froome said. “Im where I need to be for the season coming up.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

NEW YORK — Jonathan Martin spent nearly seven hours going into “great detail” with the NFL counsel investigating his claims of his harassment in the Miami Dolphins locker room. What came up in their talks, he isnt saying for now. He would say this: He still wants to play in the NFL. Martin — in town because the league is trying to gather information about the bullying he says he was subjected to by teammate Richie Incognito - arrived at the Manhattan office building of special investigator Ted Wells on Friday morning, and didnt emerge until shortly after sunset. Mobbed by media, he stood in the camera lights and read a statement. “Although I went into great detail with Mr. Ted Wells and his team, I do not intend to discuss this matter publicly at this time,” Martin said. "This is the right way to handle the situation. “Beyond that, I look forward to working through the process and resuming my career in the National Football League.” After that, he and attorney David Cornwell went back into the building, later leaving via a side exit. The crowd outside the building drew attention from office workers and tourists all day. Some even stopped to watch and wait, and most seemed familiar with Martins story. Even Miami-based hip-hop artist Rick Ross came by. His record label is located in the building across the street. Incognito has acknowledged leaving a voicemail for Martin in April in which he used a racial slur, threatened to kill his teammate and threatened to slap Martins mother. Incognito has said he regrets the racist and profane language, but said it stemmed from a culture of locker-room “brotherhood,” not bullying. Incognito is white and Martin is black. Teammates, both black and white, have said Incognito is not a racist, and theyve been more supportive of the veteran guard than they have of Martin. Incognito has been suspended by the Dolphins. He filed a grievance Thursday against the team over his suspension, and has said his conduct was part of the normal locker-room environment. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross also plans to meet with Martin, who said Friday that he will indeed get together with the Dolphins front office. On Monday, Ross said two committees would examine the locker-room culture. Players have been virtually unanimous in saying it doesnt need to be changed. At Dolphins practice Friday, long snapper John Denney, the teams players union representative, was asked about problems. “I cant say I saw it firsthand because Im not an offensive lineman, and Im not in their offensive line room. I can tell you from my perspective, and having been in this locker room, I never saw it coming,” he said. “I can say that. It was a surprise to me. There did not seem to be an increase in behavioural problems. Its been the same here my entire career.” Coach Joe Philbin also talked to reporters but kept his focus on football. “I believe in the guys we have in the locker room,” he said. "I believed in them before this all took place, before all this scrutiny came upon us. “And I believe in them today.” While Martin was in New York, and long before he spoke, Incognitos grievance was a talking point in the locker room some 1,300 miles away. “Hes got to do what hes got to do. Im never going to tell somebody how to run their life,” wide receiver Mike Wallace said. “You got to get your money, man. I dont really have too much to say about it.” Martin alleges he was harassed daily by teammates, including Incognito, and the case has raised questions about job security for Philbin, his assistants and general manager Jeff Ireland. Philbin won a vote of confidence this week from Ross, but that could change depending on the findings of Wells, who was brought into the situation last week. Wells is expected in Miami next week to talk with Dolphins players, coaches and staff. Wells will determine the role of Philbin, his staff and Miami management in the case, and his report will be made public. One issue is whether anyone on the coaching staff ordered Incognito to “toughen up” Martin, a second-year tackle from Stanford who became a starter as a rookie but played poorly at times. Martin left the team two weeks ago and has been with family in California undergoing counselling for emotional issues. Centre Mike Pouncey missed practice Friday because of an illness and is listed as questionable for Sundays game against San Diego, raising the possibility the Dolphins will be without a third starting offensive lineman. The case inspired a national debate about workplace bullying and attracted a daily throng of 100 media members or more at the Dolphins complex. In Manhattan, both CNN and Fox News Channel were on hand outside the meeting. The Dolphins (4-5) have slumped after a 3-0 start, and on Sunday they play at home for the first time since the scandal broke. “All we have to do,” defensive end Cameron Wake said, “is concentrate on playing the game on Sunday.” Cheap Manchester United Jerseys . All that matters to the son of a high school coaching legend is that hes the one they selected. “Its been my life-long dream to be an NFL head coach,” Pettine said Thursday, "and however that opportunity presents itself, its fine with me. The Senators snapped a two-game slide on Tuesday with a 4-2 win over the Florida Panthers. They allowed the first two goals of the game, both on Panther power plays, before getting first-period goals from Joe Corvo and Erik Condra to even things up. Colin Greening had the go-ahead goal with 43 seconds remaining in the second period and Bobby Ryan added a third-period tally. Though Ottawa won for just the third time in its past nine games, it was a win that head coach Paul MacLean is hoping his team can build on. “Were showing signs of being consistent,” he said. Craig Anderson made 30 saves and Clarke MacArthur had two assists to give him 10 points over his last eight games. The win improved Anderson to just 7-8-2 with a 3.42 goals against average this season, but he is 6-2-2 with a 1.42 GAA and three shutouts lifetime versus the Lightning. The Bolts won two of three versus the Senators last season — winning both meetings in Tampa — but the Sens have still won seven of the last 10 encounters overall. The Lightning have been shut out in back-to-back games and in three of their last five. Two of those have come by 1-0 deccisions, including Tuesdays setback to the Columbus Blue Jackets.dddddddddddd. Tampa Bay failed to score against the Blue Jackets Sergei Bobrovsky, who left with 15:47 to play in the game, or Curtis McElhinney. The duo combined to stop 26 shots. “If youre not frustrated, something is wrong with you right now,” said Martin St. Louis, who was robbed by McElhinney on a late chance. The Lightning have lost six of their last eight games overall and five in a row on the road. They are 4-5-1 since star center Steven Stamkos broke his leg. Tampa Bay, which was coming off a 3-0 loss at home to Pittsburgh last Friday, has not scored since Tyler Johnsons empty-net tally with 34 seconds left in a 4-2 win over Philadelphia last Friday. It has not scored against an opposing netminder since Victor Hedmans tally five minutes into the third period versus the Flyers. “If its not off the rush, were done,” St. Louis said. “We have to be able to sustain offensive pressure.” Ben Bishop made 20 saves versus the Blue Jackets and could face his former club tonight. Bishops only other meeting versus the Senators came on April 9 of last season, six days after he was traded to the Lightning by Ottawa for Cory Conacher and a draft pick. Bishop stopped 31-of-33 shots faced in the win. cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

Each year the NFL Combine – the annual prospect Olympics – marks the time when all draft speculation, and of course smokescreens, kick into high gear. But while the recent trend is for top prospects to skip drills at the showcase, opting instead to perform at pro days and private workouts, this years combine will treat teams to at least a couple high profile workouts. Perhaps the most anticipated showing will be top prospect Jadeveon Clowneys 40-yard dash. The dominant pass rusher says he is aiming for a time of 4.4 in the drill, unheard of for a defensive end. To put his target time in perspective, that time would have put him among the top performers at last years Combine, a group populated by receivers, defensive backs, and running backs, most of whom Clowney outweighs by nearly 100 pounds. The Combine will also feature one of the top quarterbacks in UCFs Blake Bortles participating in all throwing drills. While Johnny Manziel and Teddy Bridgewater – who along with Bortles are the consensus top prospects QB – will attend the Combine, Bortles throwing will give both scouts and fans an early in-depth look at a potential Top 5 pick. In total 330 prospects will turn out to Indianapolis this weekend, looking to wow teams with their measurables and boost their draft stock. The Combine could also be some prospects undoing as height, weight, and speed numbers can no longer be fudged by their college teams. It offers no assurances and doesnt apply any context, like, for example, taking injuries into account. Last year, this method forecasted the first round at a 7-1 clip; this year it was 5-3, with losses on Columbus, Colorado and San Jose. LA QUINTA, Calif. — Patrick Reed got an early start in golf. “When I was born, there was a golf club in my crib,” Reed said. He got a big jump on the field in the Humana Challenge, too, shooting three straight 9-under 63s to take a seven-stroke lead into the final round. Struggling with the pace of his putts, he needed almost all of that cushion Sunday, closing with a 1-under 71 at PGA West to beat Ryan Palmer by two strokes. “A lot tougher than the first three rounds,” Reed said. “My speed was off today. I left a lot of putts short. It seemed like the first three days the ball was just trickling over the front edge, and today it seemed like it came to a screeching halt.” Finally resembling the guy who talked Saturday about being in a “putting coma,” Reed ran in an 18-footer for birdie on the par-3 15th to push his lead to three strokes. “It felt comfortable. It felt great,” Reed said. “I was able to play the last three holes just for par rather than trying to make birdies or trying to make something happen.” He did par the last three to finish at 28-under 260 in the three-course event that he opened and closed on the Arnold Palmer Private Course. The 23-year-old Reed has two victories in his first 46 PGA Tour starts, winning the Wyndham Championship in August. He jumped from 69th to 41st in the world ranking, enough to lock up a spot in the 64-man Match Play Championship. “I always play to try to prove to everybody that I belong out here,” Reed said. “As well as, I belong, not only out here on the PGA Tour, but also with the best players in the world.” Reed took a call from former President Bill Clinton — the tournament is run in partnership with the Clinton Foundation — during his interview session. “He told me to get myself back in that zone more often,” Reed said. “Because he said it was a lot of fun to watch.” Palmer made a 15-foot eagle putt on the final hole for a 63. “What can you do with what Patrick did this week?” Palmer said. “Its ridiculous what he did. Amazing how good he played. Well come up a couple short, but it was a win in my game because I was playing for second today.” Zach Johnson and Justin Leonard tied for third at 25 under. Johnson birdied the final five holes for a 62, the besst round of the week.dddddddddddd “I got red hot at the end,” Johnson said. The Kapalua winner is taking a four-week break. “Hopefully, I can maintain where Im at,” Johnson said. Leonard parred his last two for a 65. “Would love to have made a few more putts,” Leonard said. Other than the 18-footer on No. 15, the longest putt Reed holed was a 5-footer for par on the par-4 13th. That was a crucial putt after he played the previous eight holes in 1 over with four bogeys and three birdies. “I knew that if I didnt make that putt, then it was going to get interesting,” Reed said. “To make that putt kind of gave me a little bit more fire saying, All right, well, were running out of holes for people to make a lot of birdies.” Reed missed two 6-foot par putts and an 8-footer and dropped another stroke with a poor bunker shot on the par-3 12th. “It would either just stop just short, or it would break at the very end and break off the planet and lip out,” Reed said. “It seemed like nothing would go in.” On Saturday, Reed broke the PGA Tour record for relation to par for the first 54 holes, finishing at 27 under. He also became the first player in tour history to open with three rounds of 63 or better. On Sunday, he became the second player in the event to lead wire-to-wire, joining 1977 winner Rik Massengale. “To have a day where I felt like I had probably about my C or D game and still shoot under par, and to close off a victory, that means a lot to me,” Reed said. Reeds wife, Justine, is pregnant with their first child, forcing her to turn over caddieing duties to her brother, Kessler Karain. She has walked every hole this year and plans to caddie again after the baby arrives around Memorial Day. “I cant wait to be a dad and have a little girl running around,” Reed said. After helping Augusta State win NCAA titles in 2010 and 2011, Reed drew attention in 2012 when he successfully Monday-qualified for six events. He earned his tour card in December 2012, surviving six rounds of Q-school at PGA West. “We have worked so hard at it,” Reed said. “Especially, with my wife and I, how hard we have worked the past 2 1/2 years, through Q-School, through the Monday qualifiers, and through here to get two wins in less than half a year.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

TORONTO — Kevin Pillar had a chat with slugger Jose Bautista as they practised their swings shortly before the Toronto Blue Jays took on the Minnesota Twins on Monday night. Bautista offered some words of encouragement for the backup outfielder and told him to be aggressive at the plate. It proved to be sage advice. Pillar hit a one-out flare to right field off Casey Fien that drove in pinch-runner Erik Kratz with the winning run to give the Blue Jays a 5-4 walkoff victory at Rogers Centre. “It was a slider off the plate and I was just able to nestle it in somewhere,” Pillar said. “And it feels good.” Earlier in the inning, Pillar made a miscue in left field by diving for Kurt Suzukis sinking liner. He couldnt come up with the ball and it rolled by him, allowing the Twins to move within a run. Eduardo Escobar followed with a blooper off closer Casey Janssen that landed just inside the left-field line and brought Suzuki home with the tying run. “Baseball is a weird game,” Pillar said. “You get a chance to make up for a mistake that you made maybe in the previous inning or early in the game. I was fortunate enough to make that happen.” Edwin Encarnacion had staked Toronto (39-26) to an early lead with a three-run homer in the first inning off Minnesota starter Ricky Nolasco. Jose Reyes added a solo homer in the fifth inning for the Blue Jays, who lead the major leagues with 91 home runs. With the win, the Blue Jays remained 5 1/2 games ahead of second-place Baltimore in the American League East division standings. The Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-0 Monday. It was Torontos 16th victory in its last 20 games. “Weve been playing good baseball but you still need to win some of those games like that,” said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. “For the longest time, everything has been going our way. Tonight things didnt go our way but we still managed to come out and pull out a nice win.” Minnesota (29-33) scored a pair of quick runs off Toronto starter R.A. Dickey before many fans had taken their seats on a glorious spring evening. Danny Santana hit his first career leadoff home run and Brian Dozier followed with a rainbow shot just inside the foul pole in left field. Dickey settled down after that, retiring 11 straight batters at one point before Josh Willinghams triple in the sixth inning. The Twins loaded the bases but Dustin McGowan came on and got Trevor Plouffe to ground into a double play to end the threat. Janssen (1-0), who blew his second save of the season, gave up three hits in the ninth inning. With the crowd deflated after the Twins tied the game, Minnesota pitcher Matt Guerrier (0-1) walked Dioner Navarro to open the bottom of the ninth. Kratz came in to pinch-run, moved to second on a Reyes single and then scored with room to spare. “You walk the leadoff guy, you give yourself pretty much a mess and anything can happen after that,” said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. Pillar, who entered the game in the ninth as a defensive replacement for Melky Cabrera, said his defensive miscue was on his mind when he came to the plate. Thinking about his chat with Bautista, Pillar swung and missed the first two times before making contact. “Its a huge roller-coaster of emotions right there,” he said. “I guess thats baseball. Theres a lot of ups and downs. You have to find a way to get back centred and deal with the task at hand.” Notes: Encarnacion leads the Blue Jays with 20 homers this season. Reyes now has four homers this year. Dozier has 13 home runs while Santana has gone deep twice. … Dickey allowed five hits, two earned runs, two walks and had three strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. … Nolasco allowed seven hits, four earned runs and a pair of walks. He had six strikeouts. … Morales signed a one-year, prorated contract Sunday. The Cuban slugger hit .277 with 23 homers and 80 RBIs with Seattle last season. … The Twins have hit four leadoff home runs this season. … Toronto southpaw J.A. Happ is scheduled to start Tuesday night against right-hander Kevin Correia. … The teams will wrap up the series Wednesday with an early afternoon game. … Bautista has reached base safely in 62 of 65 games this season. … Announced attendance was 19,428. Parmelee hit a game-ending shot in the ninth inning and the Minnesota Twins overcame David Ortizs big night to beat the Boston Red Sox 8-6 on Tuesday.PHILADELPHIA — This was more like last years Eagles. Nick Foles threw one touchdown pass and led Philadelphias starting offence to three first-half scores in a 31-21 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. “I feel were improving every week,” Foles said. “We have to keep moving forward.” Steelers running backs LeVeon Bell and LeGarrette Blount both played one day after they were arrested for marijuana possession shortly before Pittsburgh (1-2) travelled to Philadelphia (1-2). “Im sorry to be a distraction to the team but Im only going to answer football questions now,” Bell said. Blount also would only answer football questions. “I just want to apologize to my team, to the coach and the organization for causing that distraction,” he said. Eagles All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy left the game with a right thumb injury after a 22-yard TD catch gave Philadelphia a 7-0 lead. X-rays on McCoys thumb were negative, but he didnt return. McCoy showed no effects of a toe injury that forced him to miss one practice earlier in the week. “Its no big deal,” Eagles coach Chip Kelly said. The Eagles first-team offence had only one touchdown on six drives in road losses to Chicago and New England. But they looked more like the unit that set several franchise records in 2013. “We have a lot we can improve on,” Foles said. “Its important not to get complacent.” Foles was 19 of 29 for 179 yards and threw one interception. He led the offence to 17 points and 251 total yards before giving way to Mark Sanchez in the third quarter. Starting wide receivers Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper played their first game together, combining for nine catches for 68 yards. The Steelers couldnt get going against Philadelphias first-team defence. Ben Roethlisberger tossed a 27-yard TD pass to Heath Miller in the third quarter against the backups. “Were not worried about it. Its preseason,” Blount said. Roethlisberger finished 15 of 24 for 157 yards, one TD and one interception. Bell had nine carries for 23 yards and Blount ran seven times for 32 yarrds.dddddddddddd Rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier had six tackles after an impressive debut last week against the Bills. The Steelers werent happy with their defensive effort. “Im just ticked,” end Cameron Heyward said. “We all have to look at each other in the mirror. Were not going to settle for anything less. We know when we put on this jersey, it represents a lot. We might not be the same players but we have to step up, make plays and focus.” Foles got the offence rolling on the second possession. He connected with Maclin for 7 yards on third-and-5 and then hit Brent Celek for a 23-yard catch-and-run. A holding call on William Gay kept the drive alive when Foles threw incomplete on third down. Foles then tossed a screen pass to McCoy on third-and-10 from the Steelers 22. McCoy did the rest, following a takeout block by Todd Herremans into the end zone. Foles completed seven straight passes after misfiring on six of his first 10 throws. He was 6 for 6 for 56 yards on the third drive, which ended with Darren Sproles running in from the 1 for a 14-0 lead. Foles threw his third interception of the preseason when Troy Polamalu picked off a pass in the second quarter. The Pro Bowl MVP quarterback threw only two interceptions on 350 pass attempts last year, including the playoffs. He had 27 TD passes in the regular season, setting an NFL record for best TD/interception ratio. Matthew Tucker had a pair of 1-yard TD runs for the Eagles in the second half. Pittsburghs Bruce Gradkowski threw a 33-yard TD pass to Darrius Heyward-Bey and a 3-yard TD pass to Martavis Bryant in the fourth quarter. NOTES: Sanchez was 7 of 9 for 85 yards. … Gradkowski was 8 of 11 for 105 yards and two TDs. … Steelers K Shaun Suisham missed a 46-yarder wide left. … Eagles K Alex Henery made a 36-yarder, but missed from 31. “Obviously, you have to make a field goal like that,” Kelly said. … Rookie K Cody Parkey, acquired from Indianapolis on Wednesday night, made an extra point and had a couple long kickoffs. … Nolan Carroll picked off Roethlisberger in the second quarter. PORT LUCIE, Fla. — New York Mets closer Bobby Parnell threw batting practice Saturday, facing batters for the first time since his 2013 season was cut short by a neck injury. Parnell last pitched in a game on July 30. He missed the final two months of the season and had surgery Sept. 10 to repair a herniated disc in his neck. The right-hander threw 36 pitches to David Wright, Daniel Murphy and Eric Young Jr. “You work all off-season throwing bullpens with no batters in there and it seems like you cant miss a spot,” Parnell said. “You throw a hitter in there and it becomes 100 times harder. It feels good to get out there and face some guys, face some hitters and find the strike zone with some intensity turned up. It was a nice feeling today.” Parnell said he was able to keep the ball down and didnt feel any discomfort in his neck or right arm. “Ive been taking a lot of baby steps,” he said. “I feel great, my arm feels good, neck feels good. Everythings going well. But as far as today, this feels like a big mental hurdle. I didnt know how I would react to balls coming off the bat and I felt strong out there. I felt good and felt like I had some reaction in the neck, so everythings good.” The Mets are being cautious with Parnell, but he is currently scheduled to throw a second batting practice on Tuesday. He said hell throw at least one more batting practice session before getting into a game. . CLEVELAND — Kyrie Irving recorded his first career triple-double with 21 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 99-79 win over the Utah Jazz on Friday night. CLEVELAND — Kyrie Irving didnt need any reminders he was closing in on his first career triple double Friday night. He got plenty of help anyway. “I was trying to not think about it too much, but my teammates were hollering at me to get one more rebound, Coach (Mike) Brown was telling to get one more rebound, a couple of fans were yelling at me that I need one more,” Irving said. "I said, I got you guys, dont worry. " The All-Star Game MVP had 21 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 99-79 win over the Utah Jazz. Two rebounds shy of the mark going into the fourth quarter, Irving grabbed his ninth rebound early in the period and pulled down his 10th with 4:12 to go to become the first Cleveland player with a triple double since LeBron James on March 16, 2010, at Detroit. Irving gave credit for his last rebound to centre Spencer Hawes, who joked he pulled back a bit on a missed shot by Marvin Williams. “Luckily, Spence alligator-armed that one, like he said, to let me get that last one,” Irving said. Irving received standing ovations when he reached the milestone and when he was pulled from the game a few seconds later. That support went a step too far earlier in the quarter when a young fan wearing a stocking cap raced on the floor and patted Irving on the shoulder. The fan was wrestled to the floor by several policemen and security guards and led away in handcuffs. Irving joked that the fan was a long-time friend and suggested it might have been better if he had waited until after the game. “He told me loved me and I told him I loved him back,” said Irving, who also had a fan enter the court at Quicken Loans Arena last season to congratulate him. “My teammates said I was scared. I dont think I looked scared. I flinched a little bit. I was surprised.” Cleveland dominated the second half to earn the win and gain ground in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Cavaliers trail Atlanta by 3 1/2 games for the eighth position. The final game of February capped quite a month for Irving and the team. An embarrassing loss to the depleted Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 6 stretched Clevelands losing streak to six games and general manager Chris Grant was fired the following day. Just when it looked like the season was a lost cause, the Cavaliers won six in a row and Irrving took over the All-Star Game with 31 points and 14 assists.dddddddddddd With 22 games remaining, Cleveland has a chance to reach the playoffs in Irvings third season in the NBA. “Kyrie has got so much talent, so much ability, I think the numbers are always going to be there for him,” Utah forward Richard Jefferson said. “But no one is going to judge his career on numbers. The next thing for him is about winning. Thats what everyone expects to happen.” Luol Deng scored 16 points as the Cavaliers placed five players in double figures. Gordon Hayward scored 18 points for Utah on the first stop of a six-game road trip. Irving scored 10 points in the third quarter as the Cavaliers turned a three-point deficit into a 63-51 lead. The margin reached 23 late in the fourth quarter. Clevelands long injury list grew when Anthony Bennett, the top pick in the draft last year, missed the game with a sore right knee. Center Anderson Varejao (sore back) and guards Dion Waiters (hyperextended left knee) and C.J. Miles (sprained left ankle) were also sidelined. Utah has lost nine of 11 on the road. The Jazz missed only one 3-pointer in seven attempts in the first quarter and built a nine-point lead. Utah maintained the lead until early in the third quarter when Irving took over. He hit a 3-pointer, scored on a twisting drive to the basket, knocked down two jumpers and hit two free throws. Irving also assisted on Alonzo Gees buzzer-beating jumper from the corner that gave Cleveland a 69-60 lead. Jefferson scored 13 points and Alec Burks added 11 for Utah. “Its the road,” Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. “Youve got to find out how to be ready every night. Thats another thing were still learning as we try to bring this young bunch along.” Rookie Trey Burke, a native of Columbus, Ohio, played his first NBA game in his home state and was held to four points on 2-of-9 shooting. Tristan Thompson had 18 points and 14 rebounds for Cleveland, and Hawes added 13 points and 16 rebounds. Hawes was given a technical foul in the third quarter, his second in five games since joining the team last week. NOTES: Bennett will be a game-time decision Saturday in Memphis. … Jazz G John Lucas III didnt play until the final 2:46 with what the team called “gastric distress.” … Varejao missed his ninth straight game, Waiters was out for the sixth contest in a row and Miles was unavailable for the fifth consecutive game. … All six games on Utahs trip are against Eastern Conference teams. ORLANDO, Fla. — The Dallas Mavericks demonstrated the value of experience and consistency to the Orlando Magic. The veteran Mavericks made all the right plays at all the right times against a young, careless Magic team, beating Orlando 108-100 behind 19 points and eight assists from Monta Ellis, who had plenty of help. Dirk Nowitzki chipped in 18 points and a game-deciding 3-pointer to turn back the last Magic attempt at rallying from a 15-point first-half deficit. Reserve forward DeJuan Blair also scored 18 and made 4 of 6 free-throw attempts when the Magic intentionally fouled him late in the game to expose his 41.2 per cent free throw shooting. Vince Carter, another veteran reserve, added 12 points as the Mavericks reserves outscored Orlandos 43-25. Shawn Marion and Jose Calderon had 11 apiece and Calderon added nine assists. “We had a lot of guys play well,” Dallas Coach Rick Carlisle said. “Weve got to do it collectively. Its not going to be the one superstar putting the team on his back. Its going to be all of us going together.” Dallas had only 10 turnovers for the game, compared to 19 for Orlando. The Mavericks scored 22 points off Orlandos mistakes. “Were sharing the wealth out there and its starting to show,” Marion said. “We had some lapses on defence, but going to have those. The more we cut down on turnovers and value each possession, good things are going to happen to us.” Rookie point guard Victor Oladipo had a career-worst nine turnovers, four of them in the fourth quarter. His back-to-back turnovers, when the Magic had cut the deficit to 91-87 with six minutes left in the game, effectively blunted Orlandos attempt to overtake Dallas. “I just have to perform better in those circumstances,” said Oladipo, the second pick in the June draft. “It was a close game and I have to learn to execute in those times. Most of it, really, is on me.” Oladipo played the entire fourth quarter, despite starter Jameer Nelson being healthy and having a good game with 15 points, one assist and one turnover. Nelson didnt play in the final 17 minutes of the game. “If we didnt have those turnovers down the stretch, maybe the game could have been different,” Magic Coach Jacque Vaughn said. “Those are the details well continue to work on. We need to learn to value the basketball whether its the first quarter or the fourth quarter.” Arron Afflalo led the Magic with 25 points and Nikola Vucevic added 16 and eight rebounds. Oladipo had 10 points and six assists to go with his nine turnovers. Dallas shot 51.2 per cent in the game, but lost that and nearly every other statistical battle. The Magic shot 52.9 per cent for the game and outrebounded Dallas 40-30. “We played sensibly,” Carlisle said. “None of us are going to get too far ahead of ourselves. Weve done some good things and its really important that we just stay focused.” The game started as a jump-shooting contest with both sides hitting better than 50 per cent most of the first quarter and trading baskets with little interruption. There were six lead changes and six ties before the Mavericks went on an 11-0 run near the end of the period to take a 31-24 lead. Dallas finished the period 13 of 26, and didnt have a layup until back-to-back fast breaks in the final minute of the period. The Mavs shot even better in the second period — 59.5 per cent — but nearly all of those came around the rim as Orlandos sloppy passing and turnovers led to fast-break opportunities. Dallas stretched its lead to 15 on a jump-hook from Blair in the lane and settled for a 59-46 halftime lead. Orlando made it easier with 10 turnovers, four by Oladipo, that the Mavericks turned into 15 points. The Mavericks hit their first five shots in the second half, including a pair of 3-pointers from Nowitzki, but couldnt get any separation because they also turned the ball over three times. That allowed the Magic to pull within 81-74 on a dunk by Oladipo with 3:39 left in the period. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way and Dallas finished the quarter with an 87-80 lead. NOTES: Kyle OQuinn, the Magics backup C, sat out the game with a sprained ankle. F Solomon Jones was activated after missing seven games with a torn meniscus. He played eight minutes and scored two points. . Ellis is the Mavericks leading scorer this season at 22.2 a game. If he remains there, he would be the first Maverick other than Nowitzki to lead the team in scoring since Michael Finley in the 1999-2000 season. . Magic F Andrew Nicholson has gone 0 for 10 on 3-pointers over the last six games. Nicholson did hit two bombs against the Mavs, but both times referees ruled he had a toe on the line. About every six months, the left one would get locked up. It just happened twice in the last week aand swelled up and has been painful,” said Helwani on UFC Tonight.dddddddddddd"So he decided get it cleaned up and get a scope of the left knee and while he was at it, he decided to get the right one cleaned out as well, which was operated on in high school." NEW ORLEANS — With star forward Dirk Nowitzki removed from the lineup, Dallas still had the depth to deal with the hapless Hornets. Lamar Odom scored 16 in his first start of the season, Delonte West also scored 16, and Dallas sent New Orleans to a seventh-straight loss, 83-81 on Saturday night. Odom and West “have so much pressure on them, but theyve responded,” said Mavericks guard Jason Terry, who added 12 points. “Every time theyve been asked to step up in their roles, both of them came up big.” Shawn Marion had 14 points and a season-high 12 rebounds for the Mavs, who closed out a four-game road trip with a second straight close win after a pair of narrow losses to the Clippers and Lakers in Los Angeles. “We had to get productivity from a lot of different guys. … Its a great win,” Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. “Im also very proud of the way after the first two losses on the trip we bounced back and really gutted two games out, which is not easy to do.” Terry closed out the scoring for the Mavs with two free throws in the final seconds that made it 83-80 before Jason Kidd made sure to foul Jarrett Jack before he could attempt a tying three. The foul gave Jack two free throws. He missed the second on purpose, but could not convert a quick putback for the tie, and the Hornets fell for the 13th time in 14 games. “Were just not closing out games the way we know that we can,” said Trevor Ariza, who had 12 points. “Thats the story of our season so far.” Emeka Okafor tied a season high with 16 points and grabbed a season-best 17 rebounds for New Orleans. Carl Landry added 19 points, but after hitting his first five free throws, missed four of eight in the fourth quarter with the outcome potentially in the balance. Jack scored 12 points. Odom, acquired in a pre-season trade with the Lakers, started for Nowitzki, who is expected to sit out at least three more games while working on his conditioning and getting treatment for his sore right knee. Odom was only 6 of 14 from the field and missed four of five three-point shots, but his baskets were timely. “The ball found him two or three times and he made important plays for us,” Carlisle said. “Hes getting a better feel for how to play with our guys and tonight was a good indication of that.” Brendan Haywood grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Mavs win a second straight game. The Hornets had several chances to tie it in the final minutes, starting with Arizas missed jumper, after which Kidd grabbed the long rebound while sprinting up court and whipped a pass to Terry for a transition jumper to make it 79-75. After Okafor cut it to 79-77 and Terry missed a three, Landry was fouled inside, but made only one free throw to make it 79-78. Another Terry jumper rimmed out, but the Hornets could not take advantage as Ariza missed an off-balance fade. The Mavericks secured the rebound with just over 25 seconds left and the Hornets had to foul. After Wests free throws, Landry scored inside to cut it to 81-80 with 6.7 seconds left. Terry was fouled after grabbing the inbound pass and hit both free throws to set up the final sequence. For the Hornets, it was only the latest instance in which scrappy defence kept them close, only for them to come up short on the offensive end while explosive scorer Eric Gordon missed his 14th game of the season with a bruised right knee. The Hornets finished shooting 37.2 per cent (29 of 78), while Dallas shot 40.5 per cent (32 of 79) and out-rebounded New Orleans 48-41. “Our defence is holding teams in the 80s, which is what we like to do,” Hornets coach Monty Williams said. “Now our guys have to go out there and have some fun and score the ball and trust the offence a bit.” The game was tied 41-41 at halftime, but Dallas opened the third quarter with a 12-0 run during which Odom and West each scored once inside and hit threes. New Orleans, which made only two of its first 12 shots in the period, struggled to chip away, and Dallas held a 64-53 lead at the end of three quarters. New Orleans briefly seized control early in the fourth, using a 9-0 spurt highlighted by Greivis Vaquezs three-point play to pull to 66-64. Odom ended New Orleans surge with a layup and two free throws, and Marion bounced in a short floater soon after to make it 73-66 and give the Mavs just enough of a cushion to hold on during the final minutes. Notes: Both teams shot poorly from three-point range, with Dallas going 4 of 26 and New Orleans 2 of 19. … Okafors double-double was his fifth this season. … The Mavs won one earlier meeting on Jan. 7 in Dallas. … The Mavs are 2-3 in games decided by three points or less.
