Téma: Jak postupovat / ilence to honour the death of Nelson The Atlantic Division-leading Toronto Raptors will resume their western road trip Monday against the Utah Jazz. Listen to the Raptors vs. Jazz live tonight on TSN Radio 1050 at 9pm et/6pm pt. The Raptors are 1-1 so far on the five-game junket after defeating Denver and losing to Portland. In Saturdays 106-103 loss to the Blazers, the home team blew a 16-point advantage and eventually won on Damian Lillards running bank shot with 11.9 seconds left. Portland led 31-19 after the first quarter and had three players score at least 20 points. Toronto was led by DeMar DeRozans 36 points and 12 assists, while Kyle Lowry and Jonas Valanciunas scored 23 and 18 points, respectively, for the Raptors, who shot 46 percent for the game. “We understand what we had to do, honestly,” DeRozan said. “We understand we were down big and the only way we would get back in this game was to get stops and thats what we started doing. That was the main part. We were missing a lot of easy shots that we normally make, but we dont worry about that. The only thing we worry about is the defensive game and we picked it up in the second half.” DeRozan is averaging 27.8 points in his last five games. The Raptors, who are four games ahead of Brooklyn in the Atlantic, still have to visit Sacramento and the Los Angeles Clippers on the road trip. Raptors guard Greivis Vasquez is questionable for Monday with an illness. Utah has dropped two in a row and four of its last six games, including Saturdays 102-87 setback to the Clippers. Enes Kanter had 23 points and 14 rebounds, and Richard Jefferson scored 19 for the Jazz, who made only 35.8 percent of their shots and got 15 points from Gordon Hayward. “They showed their experience on us. Jamal Crawford made some big shots,” Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. “They executed in the second half. We just didnt get the stops when we needed to.” Jazz forward Derrick Favors missed the game with a sore right hip and is questionable for Mondays game. He has missed two straight. Toronto defeated Utah, 115-91, at Air Canada Centre on Nov. 9, but has lost 14 of the previous 16 meetings between the teams. The Raptors have also lost seven of eight and 13 of the 17 all-time matchups in Salt Lake City. . Again they were badly outshot and a late penalty almost did them in, but Trevor Smith scored in overtime as Toronto beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 Thursday night at Air Canada Centre to end the skid at five games. Relief was the primary emotion after giving up 50 shots and winning for the first time since Nov. 23. “Im happy we won because there seems to be a lot of pressure on our group, and hopefully this helps flush some of the things that are going on out there that we can feel a little bit of room to breathe what we went through,” coach Randy Carlyle said. “By no means that we think were out of the woods, but it feels good to win a hockey game.” The Leafs (15-11-3) won in large part because goaltender Jonathan Bernier made 48 saves, including six in overtime before Smith beat Kari Lehtonen with 42 seconds to go before a shootout. Bernier conceded this did feel like a night during which he saw 50 shots and that it made him tired. All in a days work for a Leafs goaltender given that this was the 10th consecutive game they were outshot. Bernier called being outshot — this time 44-22 in regulation and 50-24 total — this teams “style.” “My job is to go out there and give my team a chance to win,” Bernier said. “I thought my last couple of games I wasnt very good. I needed to come here and play the way I can play and go shot-by-shot.” Bernier earned first-star honours for his play, but his performance didnt shock Carlyle or his teammates. “Im not that impressed any more because hes done this night in and night out,” said centre Nazem Kadri, who scored twice. “Its almost expected of him now. Hes been a great contributor to this team even throughout those tough stretches when they had us pinned in our end. Our goalie needs to make a couple big saves for us to get the win, and thats exactly what happened.” Bernier earned praise from Stars coach Lindy Ruff. “I give their goalie a lot of credit. I give their team a lot of credit. They found a way to win,” Ruff said. “Kudos to them.” But even Bernier wasnt perfect. Erik Cole beat him with a goal on the rush early in the third period when the Leafs got caught on a bad line change, and then former Edmonton Oilers captain Shawn Horcoff tipped a shot in on the power play to tie the score late in regulation. Horcoff almost had a similar goal at the 9:42 mark of the third when he redirected a power-play point shot past Bernier. But the referees waved it off right away and video review upheld the no-goal call. “I was hoping theyd count it, but I felt like it was a little bit high,” Horcoff said. “I knew the next one was OK.” When Kadri scored his two goals of the night, there was no doubt. His first came thanks to some sharp passing from linemates Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk 58 seconds into the second period. Kadri added another, his ninth of the season, 6:58 into the third. He didnt grab that puck but did call Thursday night a “memory” because the game was dedicated to his late grandfather, who died earlier this week. “Its definitely something that he wouldve loved to see,” Kadri said. “In the last couple yyears there hasnt been a game hes missed.dddddddddddd Hes going to be dearly missed by our family.” Kadri had no other choice but to return to hockey after missing Tuesday nights loss to the San Jose Sharks to attend his grandfathers funeral in London, Ont. When he came back, he was on the first line between van Riemsdyk and Kessel because Tyler Bozak is out indefinitely with an oblique strain. Another player who has made the most of his opportunity is Smith, who scored his fourth goal of the season 4:18 into overtime. Smith, who was named captain of the AHLs Toronto Marlies, was playing on what could be called the Leafs second line against the Stars (13-10-4). On a team thats lacking in secondary scoring and has grown accustomed to being outshot, Smith put two on net in regulation and then scored the winner. “Overtime, thats a lot of fun,” Smith said. “Real exciting looking up at the crowd after scoring.” It probably shouldnt have gotten to overtime. With the Leafs clinging to a 2-1 lead, their best penalty-killer, Jay McClement tripped up Tyler Seguin, who was returning after missing two games with a concussion. Horcoff scored with four seconds left on that penalty. It was the ninth power-play goal Toronto had given up in its past six games, including at least one each night. “Its a big part of when youre struggling and things not going your way as far as handling pucks and pressure,” Carlyle said. “We were four seconds away, but we still had two chances to clear the puck. It would have been over. But that little bit of adversity hurt us for a period of time.” Had the Stars managed to score again in regulation or overtime or win in a shootout, it would have hurt more. The losing streak was starting to take its toll. “We had to break it,” Smith said. “We havent been playing well, and I dont think we put together 60 minutes at all tonight. But with Bernier playing over his head for us and giving us a chance to win, thats all we can ask for.” Led by Bernier, Smith and Kadri, the Leafs go to Ottawa for Saturday nights rivalry game against the Senators unburdened by the pressure of this skid. “Hopefully they feel good in there and we can flush whats been going on because theres been a lot of things going on,” Carlyle said. “And we just think that its time for this group to take a deep breath and lets go to work tomorrow and get ourselves ready for Saturday.” NOTES — The Leafs held a pre-game moment of silence to honour the death of Nelson Mandela. His name along with his dates of birth and death were put on the scoreboard along with a profile photo of the South African leader. … Winger Jerry DAmigo, called up earlier in the day as the Leafs placed Bozak and enforcer Colton Orr on injured reserve and Jerred Smithson cleared waivers, made his NHL debut playing on the fourth line and finished with 4:02 of ice time. Stars defenceman Trevor Daley left the game with a lower-body injury after getting tangled up with van Riemsdyk on the play that led to Kadris first goal. Daleys left leg got caught up with the Leafs winger, and he slid into the boards. … Defenceman Morgan Rielly was a healthy scratch for the Leafs as Cody Franson returned after missing three games with a lower-body injury. In 25 relief appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket this season, Hill posted a 3.23 earned run average and opponents hit just .206 against him. He struck out 45 batters and did not allow a home run in 39 innings. He had a July 1 opt-out date in his contract. The plan called for the 34-year-old Hill to be a left-handed specialist out of the bullpen, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. Téma: Jak postupovat / irst three goals against St. Louis ca BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Colin Montgomerie learned something about playing major championship golf at the age of 51 in the Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores. “I learned today to concentrate on me, and possibly I havent in the past,” the Scot said Sunday after shooting a 6-under 65 for a four-stroke victory over 64-year-old Tom Watson. “Were always learning and today I concentrated on my own play and could only worry about myself.” The victory was first as a senior, his first in seven years and his first in an official event in the United States. He also claimed a senior major in his fifth attempt, something he didnt accomplish in 71 majors in his regular tour days. Montgomerie, whose greatest moments in golf have been in Ryder Cup competition, finished at 13-under 261 for his first victory since he took the 2007 European Open for his 31st European Tour title. Watson also closed with a 65, and Jay Haas and Bernhard Langer tied for third at 7 under. Haas had a 67, and Langer shot 70. Montgomerie offered some comic relief on the final hole when he pulled his final approach some 20 yards only to get a bounce off the grandstand. The ball rolled to the middle of the green to set up a tap-in par. “I feel fantastic, really, superb,” he said. “Theres a motto: If you fail and fail, you come back and try again. Ive had a couple of failures here in America and close calls, especially in major championships, and its great to finally win, never mind a Champions Tour event, but a Senior PGA Championship event.” Watson, who later this year will captain the U.S. Ryder Cup team, put a charge in the tournament when he made birdies on the second and fifth holes and started the back nine with consecutive birdies to pull within one shot of the lead. He missed a 4-foot birdie putt at the short par-5 15th hole that would have put him within one shot again. “Yeah that was the roadblock right there,” Watson said. “I needed to make four there to keep the pressure on.” Montgomerie made a charge of his own. He birdied Nos. 8, 9 and 10 and, with precise iron shots and clutch putting, also made birdies at 12, 14 and 15 to pull away. He said the birdies in the middle of the round were the key. “I was caught,” he said. “It was between seven or eight players that could actually win there. Those birdies were the key.” Montgomerie will head home to Scotland for a few weeks with a first-place check of $378,000 and his name will go on the Alfred S. Bourne Trophy. The win also netted him a lifetime exemption to the Senior PGA Championship, and 2014 exemptions for the PGA Championship, Senior British Open and U.S. Senior Open. Watson, who made a bid to be the oldest player to win a senior event of any kind, had five consecutive pars to end his round while missing several birdie chances. He hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation. “It was one of the best rounds from tee to green that I played in years,” Watson said. “It was really, really good, but the putter felt like a snake in my hands. I missed a lot of short putts today. It could have been a much better scoring round of golf.” Bernhard Langer, playing with Montgomerie for a fourth consecutive round, hit his tee shot at No. 11 in the hazard right of the green and ended up making double bogey on the 140-yard par 3. It put him four shots behind Montgomerie at the time. Montgomerie is the third Scot to win senior golfs oldest championship, and the first since Jock Hutchison won his second Senior PGA in 1940. LOUIS — After the Colorado Avalanche shut out the St. Louis Blues on the road, coach Patrick Roy was still throwing down. Roy called Blues captain David Backes “gutless” for wrestling young Nathan MacKinnon to the ice during one of several late dust-ups in a fracas and penalty-filled 4-0 victory on Saturday. Backes had been coming to the aid of defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk, whod been cut by a high stick. “It shows what kind of leader he is, if youre going to go after an 18-year-old,” Roy said. "Gutless in my opinion. I mean, Shattenkirk hurt himself with his own stick. “His own stick hit him in the nose and he was bleeding and he made a pretty big act.” The Blues didnt quite take the bait, preferring to forget about this one and get ready for a matinee Sunday at Chicago. “He always has something to say after every game,” coach Ken Hitchcock said of Roy. “So you guys pick up what he wants. Im worried about my team and the way we played, OK?” Hitchcock did, however, suggest that forward Patrick Bordealeau left his feet on the check that hurt Shattenkirk when his stick was jammed into his face. Hitchcock also mused that he probably should have given rugged Ryan Reaves more ice time after the game had gotten out of hand and added that it was more important to get his team back on track rather than call Gabriel Landeskog “gutless or whatever.” Hitchcock referred to the confrontations and likely aftermath as the “debris around the game.” Backes said Roy was “entitled to his opinion.” “There were some liberties, I feel like,” Backes said. "I drop my glove and never throw a punch and end up with whatever many penalty minutes out of the ordeal. “Its frustration, everything boiling over for a lot of guys after they dont respond well.” Semyon Varlamov tied the franchise single-season record for goalie wins held by Roy and Paul Stastny had another big game in his hometown in the penalty-filled game. The Avalanche avoided a season series sweep against St. Louis after losing the first three meetings. “Our power play was sharp, penalty kill was rock solid, goaltendding was phenomenal again,” Roy said.dddddddddddd “I just felt like we dominated them.” Stastny had a goal and two assists and Mackinnon had a goal and an assist for Colorado, which has won six in a row. Roy became the fifth coach in NHL history to win 50 games in his first season. “It was kind of a big game for us,” Stastny said. “It got chippy at the end but we stood up to that and will deal with that.” Varlamov made 31 saves for his second shutout of the season and NHL-leading 40th win, matching Roys total in 2000-01. The Blues fell two points behind Boston, which beat the Flyers 5-2, for first place overall. Theyve been dependent on goalie Ryan Miller with Vladimir Tarasenko out since mid-March with a hand injury and Alexander Steen also sidelined, and scored two or fewer goals for the seventh time in 10 games. There were several scrums and frustration boiled over for the Blues late in the third. Ryan OReilly scored his 27th goal on a power play with a two-man advantage after Backes and Barret Jackman both received 10-minute misconducts. The Blues had 91 minutes in penalties in the third and finished the game with seven players on the bench. St. Louis has been shut out on home ice for the first two times all season in the past three games. Stastny, who grew up in St. Louis, has 30 points in 24 career games against the Blues. He has two goals and six assists in a seven-game point streak. The first five games in Colorados win streak were decided by one goal, two in overtime and two by shootouts. The first three goals against St. Louis came on rebounds. Stastny scored his 22nd goal on a power play at 1:14 of the second and MacKinnon had a wide open net at 6:20, a little more than a minute after Hitchcock called timeout. Nick Holden made it 3-0 at 10:25 after a lengthy review because he kicked the puck, but replays indicated the Blues Steve Otts stick touched the puck before it crossed the goal line. Notes: Roy is the first coach to win 50 games in his debut season since San Joses Todd McLellan won 53 games in 2008-09. … Steen (lower body) did not dress for the second straight game and Hitchcock said hes also out Sunday. Téma: Jak postupovat / left his defender flatfooted an SAN FRANCISCO — It didnt take Tim Hudson very long to establish himself as the ace of the San Francisco Giants rotation. One month into the season, the three-time All-Star is looking just as sharp and crisp as ever. Not even a close play at first base that was eerily reminiscent to the one that resulted in a shattered right ankle last July was enough to rattle the right-hander. Hudson and Sergio Romo combined on a five-hitter and the Giants beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Wednesday night. “He just put on a clinic,” San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. “He stayed down the whole game, had good movement, changed speeds and threw strike one. If you want to show young pitchers how to do it, thats how you do it.” Hudson (4-1) struck out six and didnt walk a batter for the fourth time in five starts this season. The Giants most consistent starter in his first season with the club, Hudson has walked two batters in 46 innings. The 38-year-old was one pitch from recording his first shutout in nearly two years before Yasmani Grandals two-out home run in the ninth. “It was definitely an economical night,” Hudson said after throwing 89 pitches. “I was able to get down in the strike zone and stay down in the zone, work ahead in the count. Guys were making some good plays behind me. It was a fun night for us.” Brandon Hicks homered and Michael Morse drove in his team-leading 20th RBI for the Giants, who finished 5-1 on their homestand. Cameron Maybin doubled and scored for San Diego, which has lost 10 consecutive series at AT&T Park. Hudson allowed only one runner past second base until Grandals home run in the ninth, and had two stretches where he retired nine straight batters. The right-hander helped his cause at the plate with a single in the second and a key sacrifice bunt in the seventh that put the eventual winning run in scoring position. He also survived a scare while covering first base to take the throw from Brandon Belt and retire Jace Peterson to end the fifth. The play brought back memories of last season when Hudson collided with Eric Young of the New York Mets and suffered a gruesome season-ending ankle injury. “Im not as quick as I used to be getting to first,” Hudson said. “That kid was getting down the line pretty good. The old guy had to put it into overdrive to beat him.” Hudson was sharp early and needed only 19 pitches to retire the first seven batters. After giving up a one-out single to Peterson in the third, the three-time All-Star struck out San Diego pitcher Robbie Erlin and Everth Cabrera. The only other hits the Padres managed came on a two-out double by Grandal in the fourth, a single by Jedd Gyorko in the seventh and a leadoff double by Maybin in the eighth. Maybin scored on Alexi Amaristas groundout. “You cant let a guy like that get ahead in the count,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “Hell really give you fits. Those pitches that were early count swings looked to me as though they were in good spots today. We just didnt hit them.” The Giants, playing without leadoff hitter Angel Pagan and third baseman Pablo Sandoval, backed Hudson with just enough offence. Every starter except leadoff man Juan Perez had at least one hit. Hunter Pence singled, stole second and scored on Morses two-out double off the wall in right in the first. Hicks fifth home run of the season leading off the second made it 2-0. Erlin (1-4) pitched out of jams in the third and fourth but lost his fourth straight start. He left with two outs in the seventh, struck out five and walked one. Buster Poseys RBI single off reliever Dale Thayer drove in Joaquin Arias to put the Giants up 3-0. After Grandals homer cut San Franciscos lead to 3-2, Romo retired pinch-hitter Chris Denorfia for his seventh save. Pagan was given the night off to rest his sore right knee while the slumping Sandoval also rested. Sandoval went into the night batting just .177 with only six RBIs. NOTES: Gyorko was reinstated from the paternity leave list before the game. To make room, San Diego optioned Tommy Medica to Triple-A El Paso. … Padres LF Carlos Quentin, on the 15-day DL with a bone bruise in his left knee, will re-join the big league club for a workout at Petco Park before Fridays game against Arizona. The team will then determine where Quentin goes to begin a rehab assignment. … RHP Tim Lincecum (1-1), who starts the series opener, has a 2.99 ERA in 13 career starts against the Braves. … RHP Andrew Cashner, San Diegos starter against Arizona, has a 0.81 ERA at Petco Park this season. Playing with confidence at both ends, No. 2 Arizona found its shooting touch and hounded Nelson, the Pac-12s leading scorer, into a rough night to race past Oregon State 76-54 on Sunday. “Overall, it was a very good team performance,” Miller said. “We did it at both ends.” Arizona looked hesitant against Oregon on Thursday night, its first game since forward Brandon Ashley went out for the season with a right foot injury. The Wildcats (23-1, 10-1 Pac-12) had no such trouble against Oregon State, finding answers for their shooting woes while dominating in nearly every aspect. Arizona shot 50 per cent for the first time in six games, had a 40-12 advantage in the paint and 15 assists with eight turnovers. The Wildcats also outrebounded the Beavers 39-24, including a 15-4 advantage on the offensive glass that led to 13 points. Aaron Gordon led Arizona with 17 points and fellow freshman Rondae Hollis-Jefferson provided his usual hustling spark while scoring 16. T.J. McConnell added 11 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Wildcats, who bounced back from their grinding victory over the Ducks with a terrific all-around effort for their 30th win in the last 31 games against the Beavers at McKale Center. “We played well tonight,” McConnell said. “We were clicking on offence and I felt like we were playing well on defence.” They sure were, particularly against Nelson. The Beavers (13-10, 5-6) rallied in the second half against Arizona State in their previous game behind Nelson, but had little chance against the athletic Wildcats, unable to spring him or chip away at Arizonas 10-point halftime lead. The nations 10th-leading scorer, Nelson was held to 10 points — 12 below his average — on 3-of-12 shooting. The rest of the Beavers did little to pick up the slack, shooting 8 of 24 in the second half and 39 per cent overall. Angus Brandt led the Beavers with 14 points. “Its disappointing that we didnt play better, especially since we have been playing better,” Oregon State coach Craig Robinson said. “I dont think we came out with our best effort and I want to take the blame for that.” Shooting has been Arizonas problem in recent weeks. The Wildcats shot 37 per cent over the past four games and hit 18 of 70 (25 per cent) from 3-point range.dddddddddddd Arizona won four of those five games behind its defence, particularly with big stops late. The Wildcats did it against Oregon in their last game as they struggled offensively without Ashley, shutting down the Ducks in the final 3 minutes to win 67-65 on Thursday after trailing most of the second half. Arizona had some shooting woes early against Oregon State, but rallied quickly behind Gordon and Hollis-Jefferson. Gordon scored in a variety of ways, getting a tip-in, a coast-to-coast drive after a steal and dropping in his first 3-pointer since Dec. 19, a no-hesitation shot from the corner. He had 11 points at the half. Hollis-Jefferson scored on a turnaround in the post to open the game and scored nine points by halftime behind his always-on-the-gas style. Arizona closed the first half on a 12-3 run and hit 16 of 29 shots to lead 37-27. Gordon opened the second half with an ill-advised toss that went off the top of the backboard in an attempt to dunk that sent Miller sprawling back in his seat in disgust. Gordon followed with the kind of move that has him projected as one of the top NBA draft picks when he leaves Tucson: a behind-the-back dribble through the lane that left his defender flatfooted and led to an easy layup. The rest of the Wildcats kept rolling, too, stretching the lead while showcasing what they can do even without Ashley in the lineup. “Today, we couldnt stop them,” Robinson said. “This is a good team. Its fun to watch when you arent getting beat by them.” Oregon State rallied behind Nelson against Arizona State on Thursday night before losing in overtime. The Beavers had no comeback in them this time, and Nelson struggled all night He scored 24 of his 26 points in the second half against Arizona State, but had a hard time finding room to shoot against Arizona. Hounded by Johnson and McConnell, who got plenty of help on screen switches, Nelson had four points on 2-of-8 shooting in the first half. He continued to labour against Arizonas pressure, going more than 10 minutes of the second half before getting off his first shot attempt. He missed all three of his 3-point tries in the game. “It was a team effort on Nelson and we did a great job on him,” McConnell said. And just about everyone else. Téma: Jak postupovat / ttle for second after Uran beat the It For the third night in a row the Winnipeg Goldeyes and the New Jersey Jackals played a closely matched game. The only difference: the Goldeyes were able to come out on the winning side on Thursday night. The Goldeyes (19-12) were able to avoid being swept by the Jackals (14-10) as they won 2-1 in front of 1,237 fans at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls, New Jersey. For the first time in the three-game series the Fish were able to take the lead first. After Jake Blackwood got on base with a first inning single, he was driven in on a two run home run from Ray Sadler. The home run was Sadlers team leading seventh of the season. “Thats what he was looking to do there in the first inning,” said Goldeyes Pitching Coach Jamie Vermilyea on the Jewel 101 Post-Game Show. “Sadlers a strong guy and he put a good swing on it.” From there the two teams starting pitchers stole the show, as they both earned quality starts. Matt Jackson went strong for six and two-thirds innings, only giving up one run on four hits. He was able to strike out five and only gave up two walks, both of which were in the bottom of the first inning. The effort from Jackson earned him the win. “Jackson set the tone, coming out throwing strikes,” said Vermilyea. “His breaking ball was working well and getting him strikes.” The Jackals starter Isaac Pavlik, who is a ten-year veteran on the team, also went for six and two-thirds innings. He struck out six Goldeyes, and only gave up those two first inning runs on six hits by the Fish. After both starters came out of the game, it was the relievers chance to show what they could do. Ty Kelley came in for New Jersey, and finished the game on the mound for the Jackals. Kelleys appearance was highlighted in the ninth inning as he struck out the Goldeyes in order. Brendan Lafferty and Chris Kissock took over for a combined one and one-third inning for Winnipeg, and did their job of keeping the Goldeyes in the lead. Kyle Bellamy came in to finish the game for the Fish and earned the save. Bellamy was able to match Kelleys ninth inning performance, striking out the Jackals in order to end the game. “Bellamy did his thing in the ninth inning. You really cant close out a series better than that,” Vermilyea said. With the win the Goldeyes end their three-game losing skid and now sit tied with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks for second in the American Association North Division. Both teams are one game behind the St. Paul Saints. The Goldeyes continue their tour of the Can-Am League this weekend with a three-game series against the Quebec Capitales. Theyll face the Capitales Friday night at 6 p.m., Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at noon. The Goldeyes then go to Trois-Rivieres to take on the Aigles in a four-game series that will round out the road trip. The Colombian was 57 seconds behind Cadel Evans going into the stage, then won the 42-kilometre (26-mile) individual time trial from Barbaresco to Barolo in under an hour, and Evans finished 1 minute, 34 seconds behind in third. “Its incredible, Im really surprised. I didnt think that I would win it. I cannot believe I won the stage and took the pink jersey,” Uran said. "I worked a lot on my time trial, spending time in the wind tunnel over the winter, but today surpassed my expectations. “Its too early to say the race is over. We still have not raced the hardest mountains yet. The most difficult part of the Giro is still to come.” Uran took the pink jersey off Evans to lead the Australian by 37 seconds. “I saw Uran coming into form,” Evans said, "but I honestly did not expect him to have such an amazing time trial. Of course, I had hoped to have done better myself. The time trial course suited me well, but as I said yesterday, the verdict is on the road. “My position is good tactically.dddddddddddd It is going to be interesting.” Diego Ulissi led for most of the day and looked on course for a third stage victory in the race but had to settle for second after Uran beat the Italian cyclists time by 1:17. Overall, Rafal Majka was third, 1:52 behind Uran. Thomas de Gendt was one of the early leaders and was in front for a long time as he was one of the last cyclists to complete the stage on dry roads. Later cyclists struggled in the rain, and there was even thunder and lightning at the finish. There was a scare when Tobias Ludvigsson misjudged a corner on the technical descent and went flying over a barrier, landing hard after a short drop. He lay prone for several minutes but was later seen sitting up before being taken to hospital. The weather abated and the roads were beginning to dry out again when Ulissi came flying out of the starting gates. He crossed the line 50 seconds ahead of De Gendt, who eventually finished eighth. Fridays 13th stage is a mainly flat, 158-kilometre (98-mile) leg from Fossano to Rivarolo Canavese. Téma: Jak postupovat / Werth returned after a sore groin forced h The Vancouver Canucks have had quite a ride with goaltending in recent years and attempted to solve the problem by signing the number one free agent puck-stopper. Numbers Game looks into the Canucks signing Ryan Miller. The Canucks Get: G Ryan Miller. Miller, 33, was having a terrific season in Buffalo, posting a .923 save percentage in 40 games before he was traded to St. Louis. From there, Miller struggled down the stretch, with aa .903 save percentage in 19 regular season games before an .897 save percentage in the first-round playoff loss to Chicago. That finish might have dimmed his star somewhat, but Miller has a repuation earned with a save percentage of .919 over the past five seasons, during which no one has registered more saves than Millers 8278. That rep isnt everything, though. Miller is a 33-year-old who last made it out of the first round of the playoffs in 2007 and his .925 even-strength save percentage over the past four seasons ranks 22nd out of 43 goaltenders to play at least 4000 5-on-5 minutes. Following their abrupt playoff departure, the Blues changed their goaltending approach, retaining Brian Elliott with the expectation that they would add prospect Jake Allen to the tandem for next season. Whether Miller is at the peak of his game isnt necessarily the point though, because hes an upgrade in net for Vancouver; more proven than Eddie Lack or Jacob Markstrom, and thats what matters for the Canucks over the next three seasons. If they are going to remain competitive for at least a few more seasons, then the Canucs cant be stumbling around with question marks in goal, hoping that it will work out. New Canucks GM Jim Benning was instrumental to the Buffalo Sabres decision to draft Miller in 1999, so its not altogether surprising that Benning would turn to Miller to help the Canucks now. Miller doesnt guarantee success for the Canucks, but if he can provide at least average, or ideally above-average, goaltending, then the Canucks have had good enough possession numbers to compete for a playoff spot if they get decent goaltending. The Vikings announced Saturday they downgraded Peterson from doubtful on the original injury report to out against Detroit Sunday, when the Vikings and Lions will play the last game at the Metrodome.ATLANTA — Freddie Freeman insists the Atlanta Braves have no special insight when playing the Washington Nationals. “I dont know if its about getting in their heads,” Freeman said. “You just want to go out there and win series. It doesnt matter who its against.” Freeman and Justin Upton each hit a two-run homer off Gio Gonzalez and the Braves completed a three-game sweep of the Nationals with a 10-2 victory on Sunday. Beating Washington for the 18th time in the last 25 series matchups, Atlanta is hoping to use another fast start against the Nationals to win a second straight NL East title. The Braves have won five of six against the Nationals this year. “We have a 19-game stretch against division opponents,” Freeman said. “This is where you can get off to a good start and get off to a good lead and hopefully well keep playing well when we get to” Philadelphia to begin a four-game series Monday. Washington began the day by placing third baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list with a broken right thumb. Hell be out four to six weeks. With Zimmerman and leadoff hitter Denard Span sidelined, the Nationals lineup managed just five hits off Aaron Harang (2-1), who allowed one run, one walk and struck out five in six innings. Gonzalez (2-1) continued his struggles against the Braves, giving up nine hits, six runs and four walks and striking out six in six innings. Despite ranking second in the majors among left-handers with 34 wins since the start of 2012, Gonzalez is 2-7 with a 5.31 ERA in 10 starts against the Braves during that span. He hasnt received more than one run of support in any of his seven winless starts against Atlanta. “We were catching bad breaks,” Gonzalez said. “We were making some big mistakes, and as a starting pitcher youve got to learn to adjust and keep the ball down.” Harang, making his 322nd career start and third with the Braves, improved to 2-4 with a 3.72 ERA in 10 starts against Washington. Gus Schlosser, Atlantas fourth pitcher, gave up Adam LaRoches third homer in the ninth to make it 10-2. Ross Detwiler, Washingtons second pitcher, allowed four unearned runs in the eighth on Freemans RBI double and Andrelton Simmons first homer, a three-run shot that put the Braves up 10-1. Gonnzalezs struggles began in the first.dddddddddddd. After walking leadoff hitter Jason Heyward, Gonzalez made an errant underhanded throw to first baseman LaRoche on B.J. Uptons bunt single. The ball rolled away from LaRoche, allowing Heyward to advance to third and B.J. Upton to second. Freemans sacrifice fly scored Heyward, and Justin Upton homered to make it 3-0. Over his last six games, Justin Upton is hitting .590 with four homers in 22 at-bats. “We know what were capable of and what we want to achieve,” Justin Upton said. “If everybody can contribute every day, I think well be fine.” Atlanta added three more runs in the second. Tyler Pastornicky led off with a triple and scored on Heywards RBI double. Freeman followed with his fourth homer to give the Braves a 6-0 lead. Washingtons first run came on Jose Lobatons RBI groundout, scoring Kevin Frandsen from third to make it 6-1 in the fifth. Freeman, who has hit .470 in his last 34 at-bats, avoided a scare in the fourth when Gonzalezs 92 mph fastball hit the outer right side of his right hand. Like the rest of the day, everything seemed to go Atlantas way. “It pinched my pinkie into the bat,” Freeman said. “It was more a scare than an injury. I got really lucky. I think if I didnt choke up, Im done. By choking up, it got some fat right there. I kind of lucked out, I think.” NOTES: Washington RF Jayson Werth returned after a sore groin forced him from the lineup on Saturday. Téma: Jak postupovat / ing." Kassian received a double-m EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Rex Ryan found plenty of things to brag about after his New York Jets upset the Saints 26-20 Sunday. His impressive string of wins over his twin wasnt the main one. Oh, Rex mentioned beating brother Rob, the New Orleans defensive co-ordinator, for the seventh time in 10 matchups. How could he not, given the competitive nature of the twins, something they got from their father, Buddy, who went 55-55-1 as an NFL head coach? The 79-year-old Buddy was at the game. But there were so many other aspects of yet another victory in an odd-numbered game that thrilled the Jets boss. “All right, I beat my brother again. Just kidding,” Rex said with a laugh. “Yeah, theres a little extra, but at the end of the day, now you realize that your bro just took a loss, so thats the tough thing. I pull for them every single week except one.” The Jets (5-4) win every other week. They tied the 2005 New England Patriots for the longest such string to begin a season, according to STATS. This win was built on big plays by Rexs pride and joy, the defence. The offence and special teams came up with some huge plays, too. "We didnt know how wed win and all that, but we told our team, All I know is weve got a team that believes and fights until the end and we find a way, " Rex Ryan said. “And thats really what we did.” Nick Folk remained perfect this season by kicking four field goals, the defence held Drew Brees and the high-scoring Saints (6-2) to six points in the second half, and New York had seven plays of at least 19 yards against Rob Ryans D. Rob was not made available to reporters by the Saints after the defeat. Interceptions by Demario Davis and Antonio Cromartie and a fourth-and-inches stop highlighted New Yorks solid defensive performance, and former Saints running back Chris Ivory rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown. “They did a really good job scheming us and figuring out how to get those runs on us, how to get Ivory the ball and get some positive plays on us,” said Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, who made his 2013 debut after recovering from a knee injury. “They did a very good job and deserved to win this game. Ivory got the ball and had 9 or 10 yards before someone touches him.” Folk is 23 for 23 on field goals and 14 of 14 on extra points. “Guys, how about that year?” Ryan said. “Its not that its a given, but you think, OK, Folk Hero, knock it through. Lets go.” New Orleans got two touchdown catches from Jimmy Graham, giving him 10 this season, but did little in the second half, even resorting to a reverse to rookie tight end Josh Hill on fourth-and-inches in the final period. The brothers hugged at midfield after the game. The Jets offence was opportunistic after getting two takeaways. The second was not Brees fault: Nick Toon, son of former Jets star receiver Al Toon, had the ball pop off his hands late in the first half and high in the air, where Cromartie snagged it. That pick soothed the crowd that was getting on Cromartie for two major gaffes earlier in the second period. Cromartie fell down on Robert Meachems 60-yard catch and run. Graham capped that 80-yard drive when he outmuscled Cromartie in the end zone for a 10-yard score. Brees, who lost one of his favourite targets when Darren Sproles left early with a concussion, shook off a first-quarter interception by Davis with a 51-yard throw to Graham. The powerful tight end beat Jaiquawn Jarrett down the right sideline and dragged the safety the final 5 yards to the goal line. Often, though, the Saints were out of sync, including using three timeouts on offence in the opening quarter. That cost them when they couldnt challenge Cromarties interception, which led to Geno Smiths 3-yard touchdown run. Davis interception came on a ball tipped by teammate Dawan Landry, and led to Folks 39-yard field goal. Ivory gave New Yorks offence its biggest boost with first-half runs of 27 and 52 yards. The second burst came from the Jets 2 and sparked a 93-yard drive to Folks second field goal, from 21 yards. Ivory added a 3-yard TD run in the second quarter, and Folk hit a 47-yarder that barely sneaked over the crossbar, to start the second half. Garrett Hartley, who missed earlier from 43, made a career-long 55-yarder, drawing the Saints within 23-17. Folk nailed another one, from 45 yards, in the fourth period, and Hartley countered with a 43-yarder. NOTES: Brees was 30 of 51 for 382 yards with two TDs and two picks. Graham finished with 116 yards on nine receptions. … Smith was only 8 of 19 for 115 yards, but the Jets rushed for 198 with a 5.5-yard average. … Josh Cribbs, in just his third game for New York, had five kickoff returns for 134 yards, three rushes for 12, two receptions for 6, and even completed a 25-yard pass to a fellow newcomer, TE Zach Sudfeld. … Jets WR Jeremy Kerley hurt his elbow, LB Garrett McIntyre hurt his knee, and safety Antonio Allen suffered a head injury. Kassian collided with Gagner along the boards in the second period of the Oilers 5-2 home exhibition win over Vancouver on Saturday. Kassians stick struck Gagners face, knocking out several of the Edmonton forwards teeth. “As he nears the boards Kassian comes to a spinning stop, recklessly swinging his stick and striking Gagner in the face and breaking his jaw,” said NHL director of player safety Brendan Shanahan. “While we accept Kassians assertion that he did not intend to strike Gagner in the face, he is however responsible for the consequences of swinging his stick in this instance. In summary, this was high sticking.” Kassian received a double-minor for high-sticking on the play. Gagner willl miss the start of the regular season with the injury.dddddddddddd The Oilers said he is out indefinitely. The NHL also suspended Canucks forward Dale Weise for Vancouvers final three pre-season games for an illegal check to the head of Edmonton forward Taylor Hall in the same game. Weises incident occurred early in the first period. He was assessed a minor penalty on the play for illegal check to the head. “As Hall comes out of the corner with the puck Weise comes down and delivers a shoulder check directly to the head of Hall,” said Shanahan. “Weise does not hit Hall squarely through the body and the head is the main point of contact.” Hall remained in the game and showed no apparent injury. Téma: Jak postupovat / n the first, but Olt answered i NEW YORK – Carmelo Anthony had 21 points and eight rebounds, and the New York Knicks tuned up for the NBA season opener by beating the New Jersey Nets 88-82 on Wednesday night. Amare Stoudemire scored 15 points, and Tyson Chandler added eight points and 12 rebounds for the Knicks, who host the Boston Celtics on Sunday afternoon in the first game of the 2011-12 season. Neither team looks ready for real games to start: The Nets made 50 per cent of their free throws, 15 per cent of their three-point attempts, and starting guard Anthony Morrow was 0 for 10 from the field. The Knicks shot 34 per cent overall. “We know itll be a lot different Sunday against the Celtics,” Anthony said. “Theyre preparing for us, were preparing for them. We have the first NBA game of the season and were excited about that. Were just ready to go out there and get this thing rolling.” Point guard Toney Douglas finished with 13 points in the first NBA game at Madison Square Garden since renovations began on the arena. He got additional time after his backup, Mike Bibby, sat out the second half with back spasms. Kris Humphries, who re-signed earlier Wednesday with the Nets, entered in the second quarter for his first action since his failed marriage to reality star Kim Kardashian. The forward was loudly booed every time he touched the ball in his brief stint, a reception that rivaled what LeBron James received in his first visit here last season after choosing Miami over New York. “Its tough, its a tough situation. New York fans are New York fans,” said Anthony, who attended the wedding. “I like it, to be honest with you. Thats how it should be. Our fans shouldnt be cheering for nobody else.” Chants of “We want Humphries! We want Humphries!” broke out in the fourth quarter, but he did not return. “I felt like Rudy,” Humphries said. Added Deron Williams: “Thats the first time Ive ever heard a crowd rooting for an opposing player to enter the game. It was a nice gesture,” he added sarcastically. Williams scored 21 points and Brook Lopez had 15, though 11 came against Knicks reserves in the fourth quarter. New York completed a sweep of the two-game series after winning at New Jersey on Saturday. “We did a great job defensively, thats the first thing weve got to try to get our grips on,” Stoudemire said. “Offense is going to come, were very talented offensively, thats going to happen, but defence is where we seem to be making our strides.” Among the changes at the arena after the first of a planned three-year project were new locker rooms and the removal of the tunnel from where players used to enter the court. Turns out hes been good enough to amass more hits in a Phillies uniform than any other player. Rollins singled in the fifth to pass Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt to become the Phillies hits leader and Domonic Brown capped the inning with a three-run homer, leading Philadelphia to a 7-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Rollins got hit No. 2,235 off Edwin Jackson, sending a 3-1 pitch into right field to open the fifth. The game was then delayed for an on-field celebration. “It was very cool,” said Rollins. The 5-foot-8 shortstop never let his stature deter him. “Thats something my mom and dad taught me when Im young,” he said. “(Im) probably not going to be biggest guy, but that doesnt mean you have to be weak, doesnt mean you dont have confidence. And then size isnt really going to matter. Ive always had that belief in myself and without it I wouldnt have been here.” Chase Utley also homered for Philadelphia, which has won four of five following a dismal 1-8 stretch. David Buchanan (2-3), in his fifth start for injured lefty Cliff Lee (elbow), allowed three runs and six hits in five innings. But the day belonged to Rollins. He made his debut with the Phillies on Sept. 17, 2000, and has played his entire career in Philadelphia. “To be the all-time hits leader, that speaks for itself,” Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. “It was well worth it. Fourteen years of effort with one uniform in a lot of ways thats old school.” Said Cubs manager Rick Renteria: “Hes put together what is potentially a Hall of Fame career. Hes a credit to Philadelphia and the Phillies. I think hes admired all over.” Schmidt, a Phillies TV analyst for Sunday games, retrieved Rollins bat and greeted the 2007 NL MVP with a high-five and hug at first base. The entire Phillies team then came out from the dugout to offer congratulatory hugs and handshakes. After the Phillies left the field, Schmidt took Rollins hand and held it in the air. Fans cheered and gave the duo a standing ovation as fireworks erupted from the large video board in left field. “I told him, Congrats, it couldnt happen to a better guy,” Schmidt said later in the game. “Im glad I was here. My heart is pounding.” Schmidt had doubts that any player would break his hits record in nootoriously tough Philadelphia and in the era of free agency.dddddddddddd But Rollins mentality on and off the field, Schmidt says, allowed him to do it. “Hes very comfortable in his own skin,” Schmidt said. “Hes got a nice, short stride and stays relaxed (at the plate). Hes a great clutch hitter, tremendous . much better than me. One of the great compliments you can pay a hitter is (to) say I want him up when the game is on the line.” Schmidt said Rollins should get “definite consideration” for the Hall of Fame right now and believes Rollins could land in Cooperstown with continued solid play for three or four more years. “He knows talent, thats pretty cool,” Rollins said. Schmidt also knows hitting. Upon leaving the field, Schmidt was stopped in the dugout by the slumping Brown, who asked for a hitting lesson. Schmidt said he told Brown to drive through the ball with his left hand. Minutes later, Brown broke the game open with a three-run homer to right, his fourth of the season after hitting 27 last year, that put Philadelphia ahead 7-3 and chased Jackson (4-7). Rollins received strong ovations when he came to the plate his first two at-bats, but he grounded out to first base in the first inning and lined out sharply to first in the second. He finished 1 for 4. Justin Ruggiano, Luis Valbuena and Mike Olt homered for Chicago. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth for his 15th save in 16 chances. Jackson allowed seven runs — six earned — on eight hits in 4 2-3 innings. Utley put Philadelphia in front with a solo shot in the first, but Olt answered in the second. It was the 10th homer in 22 hits for the Cubs rookie. Ben Revere and Carlos Ruiz had RBI hits, along with Junior Lakes fielding error in centre field, in the bottom of the second helped Philadelphia take a 4-1 lead. NOTES: The Cubs lost an eighth-inning challenge when replays upheld first base umpire Kerwin Danleys decision that Nate Schierholtz was out at first base. The delay was 2 minutes, 17 seconds. . Jackson fell to 0-5 in five regular-season starts at Citizens Bank Park. . Chicago dropped its NL-worst road record to 12-25. The Cubs havent won consecutive road games on the same trip since last Sept. 10-11. . Cubs left-hander Travis Wood (6-5, 4.95) opposes Phillies right-hander A.J. Téma: Jak postupovat / onside kick, were then penalized for illegal CALGARY — While the Winnipeg Jets have reversed their fortunes under new coach Paul Maurice, it was same old, same old Thursday night for the Calgary Flames. Olli Jokinen, Mark Scheifele, and Bryan Little each had a goal and an assist as Winnipeg won 5-2, handing Calgary its record-setting seventh consecutive loss on home ice. “Its pretty tough to generate energy when you give up the first two goals,” said Flames coach Bob Hartley. “Bad coverage right in front of our net. In the NHL, you let guys get great shots from 10, 15 feet away, youre looking for trouble.” Considering the Flames had scored only two goals over their previous six home games, that early 2-0 deficit courtesy of Little at 5:01 and Dustin Byfuglien three minutes later seemed to take the life right out of the building, except for the pockets of vocal Jets supporters. “Its frustrating for our fans, for sure,” admitted Flames centre Matt Stajan, who has gone 16 games without a goal and has no points in his last 12. "Every year, we take pride in wearing this jersey, especially on home ice. Weve always had success in this building. In this recent stretch, it hasnt been very pretty. " The Flames have been outscored 22-4 during the losing streak at the Scotiabank Saddledome, which broke the previous mark of six straight losses set in December 1998. “We cant wait for it to turn around. The game doesnt work that way. Its not just all of a sudden, youre going to start winning. Youve gotta make it happen,” Stajan said. Home or away, goal scoring has been a real trouble spot of late. Calgary has mustered only 12 goals in its last 11 games. They have lost nine of those games to sit 28th in the NHL, three points up on Edmonton. The last place Buffalo Sabres have climbed within six of the Flames. “I felt tonight, not to make up any excuses, but we had zero legs.” Hartley said. “In the third period, we saw a little life but in the first two periods, skating was painful. We were trying but I dont know if it was the trip, and I even hate to mention this, but we had zero intensity, we couldnt move.” Travelling a long distrance for a short two-game road trip, Calgary played back-to-back on Monday and Tuesday, winning in Carolina and losing in Nashville. Jacob Trouba also scored for Winnipeg (21-23-5), which opened up a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes and cruised to its second consecutive win under Maurice. “We just have to keep focusing on what were doing and getting better every game and having a short memory is going to be good for us,” said Trouba. “Forget about the game we just played and treat every game as a new one and be ready to play.” Maurice was hired Sunday, the same day that former Jets coach Claude Noel was fired. Winnipeg won 5-1 over Phoenix in Maurices debut on Monday. “Hes been really good for us,” said Scheifele. “Hes really instilled a mindset that were playing for each guy in the locker room, youre playing for the guy beside you. I think thats the big thing, weve really been doing that the last two games.” The Jets will try to make it three wins in a row Saturday night when they play host to the Edmonton Oilers. “I thought we were pretty good,” Maurice said. “Calgary wasnt sitting back and feeling sorry for themselves. They compete, they work and to our credit, we respected that coming into this game. We came to work because we knew they would.” Mark Giordano and Lance Bouma scored for Calgary (16-26-6), which hits the road for games in Vancouver and San Jose next. “It seems like were lacking confidence offensively right now but you try not to think about too much,” said Flames winger Paul Byron. “It seems like when we get a goal early in a game, we have a completely different hockey team so we know thats a recipe for success so hopefully we can get back to doing that.” Exposed on Byfugliens first-period goal, leaving him uncovered in the slot, Calgarys defensive coverage was also poor on both second period goals. Schieffle was left all alone at the side of the net for an easy tap-in at 9:09, set up neatly by Blake Wheeler. At 17:31 on the power play, nice puck movement resulted in Jokinen having an empty net to fire his 13th of the season into. Making his fourth start in a row, Pavelec finished with 20 saves to improve to 13-19-4. Berra had 18 stops. The 27-year-old first year goaltender from Switzerland falls to 5-14-2. Notes: Prior to the game, the Jets placed Evander Kane (hand) on injured reserve and recalled Carl Klingberg from St. Johns (AHL). Klingberg has played seven career NHL games but has yet to make an appearance with the Jets this year…. Calgary LW Mike Cammalleri (concussion) missed his third game… The Flames next home game is against Phoenix next Wednesday… Flames LW TJ Galiardi has no goals in his last 32 games… The next game for both Flames LW Jiri Hudler as well as Byfuglien will be their 500th career NHL game. Hoefl-Rieschs exit — from the downhill course into safety nets, then airlifted from the slope by helicopter — left Anna Fenninger of Austria favourite to win her first giant crystal trophy one month after becoming an Olympic champion. CLEVELAND — Jay Cutler felt the pressure and knew he had to perform well. There was no other option. This wasnt the time to buckle. Not with his teammates, his coach, and frankly, all of Chicago counting on him. Once the rust came off, Cutler came through. Shaking off two first-half interceptions, Cutler threw three touchdown passes in his first start since Nov. 10, leading the Bears to a 38-31 win on Sunday over the Cleveland Browns. Cutler, who missed Chicagos previous four games with a sprained left ankle and reclaimed his starting job from Josh McCown earlier this week, threw a 4-yard TD pass to Earl Bennett with 5:41 left as the Bears (8-6) rallied in the second half and stayed in contention for an NFC playoff spot. Cutler finished 22 of 31 for 265 yards and validated first-year coach Marc Trestmans decision to stick with him over McCown, who had played so well while filling in for Chicagos starter. Trestmans choice didnt come without controversy. There were reports of division within Chicagos locker room, but on a brutally cold and blustery day in Cleveland, the Bears were united. “The guys rallied around me,” Cutler said. “Id be lying if I didnt say there was (pressure) with everything on the outside and as well as Josh has played. But this was the plan all along and no one really flinched in our building.” Michael Bushs 40-yard TD run with 2:17 left sealed it for the Bears, who completed a four-game sweep of the AFC North and won their first road game since Nov. 4, when McCown led them to a win over Green Bay. Trestman had promised Cutler would keep his job once he was healthy. And after Cutler was cleared earlier this week to practice, Trestman kept his word and started the not-always-popular veteran, a decision that had some Bears fans questioning whether it might be better to stick with the hot McCown, who has thrown 13 TD passes and just one interception this season. Trestman said there was no doubt the Bears believed in Cutler. “They played hard for him today and they had his back,” Trestman said. “Hes a captain — an elected captain — and Im sure he would tell you that not just the offensive guys, but throughout our football team, they stuck together and won for each other today.” Cutler looked shaky in the first half with the two picks, but he settled down and brought back the Bears, who fell behind 24-17 when Cleveland safety T.J. Warrd returned a fumble 51 yards for a TD.dddddddddddd Backed up at his own 5 in front of Clevelands Dawg Pound section early in the fourth, Cutler drove the Bears 95 yards — with the help of two defensive penalties — and hit Alshon Jeffery with a 45-yard scoring pass to tie it with 10:59 left. Cutler lofted a deep pass toward the front of the end zone to Jeffery, who wasnt open but hauled in the throw when safety Tashuan Gipson badly mistimed his jump. Chicagos Brandon Marshall had six catches for 95 yards and a 5-yard touchdown. Marshall knew Cutler was playing with more at stake than usual, and could understand his teammate being nervous. “Hes not going to show it, but the human side of things, you got a guy — Josh McCown — playing lights out, probably playing better than any quarterback in the National Football League,” Marshall said. “Thats what I love about Jay, man. Doesnt matter the situation, hes going to be the same guy. Thats what I respect about him as a player, as a captain, but also as a friend.” Chicagos Zackary Bowman returned an interception 43 yards for a TD to give the Bears a 17-10 lead in the third quarter. Gipson had one of two defensive touchdowns for the Browns (4-10). But as has been the case in recent weeks, Clevelands defence couldnt get the big stop when it needed one. The Browns have lost five straight, eight of nine and dropped at least 10 games in six straight seasons. “It kinds of defines our season,” said Browns quarterback Jason Campbell, who finished 23 of 39 for 273 yards and one touchdown. “There were some good things and some bad things. Its frustrating.” Campbells 43-yard TD pass to Josh Gordon brought Cleveland within 38-31 with 59 seconds left. The Browns, who lost a heartbreaker in New England last week when they couldnt recover a late onside kick, were then penalized for illegal formation trying one of their own and the Bears ran out the final seconds. NOTES: The Browns lost star CB Joe Haden in the second half with a hip pointer. His absence allowed Cutler to pick on rookie CB Leon McFadden. Chudzinski said the team will know more about Hadens injury Monday. … Gordon finished with three catches for 67 yards. He was involved in a minor car accident Saturday. … The Bears limited the Browns to 93 yards rushing. Chicago came in ranked last in the league, allowing 157 yards per game. Téma: Jak postupovat / ect? Having a goal celebration, what St. Louis Blues 3 Winnipeg Jets 1 (Jets 31-20-9, Road 15-16-3) – The previous four games between these two teams this season were all decided by one goal, and for the most part so was this one. With the win the Blues become the first team to hit the 100 point mark (101) as they upped their record to 20-0-2 in games within the Central Division. This was a physical, feisty affair with 100 penalty minutes handed out at 19:59 of the third. The Jets are now six points behind Phoenix for the final playoff spot, as the Coyotes were 4-3 winners in Los Angeles. The First period was scoreless as the Jets, playing on back to back nights, put together a very solid 20 minutes, outshooting the Blues 7-6. St. Louis got the games first goal early in the second, as Brendan Morrow notched his 11th of the year. The Jets managed only five shots on goal in the second. The Jets tied the game early in the third. With the teams playing four on four, Evander Kane set up Eric ODell on a two on one. ODell went to his backhand to score his third. Zach Bogosian also drew an assist. In the back half of the period Kane was called for slashing giving the Blues their second power play of the game. David Backes was the recipient of a fortunate bounce to score his 22nd of the year and give the Blues a 2-1 lead. Mark Stuart blocked a shot, with the puck deflecting to the front of the net and right onto the stick of Backes. With Al Montoya on the bench for an extra attacker, Backes and Jacob Trouba were chasing a puck into the Jets zone, there was some contact between the two, Backes went to the ice and the officials ruled it an automatic goal feeling Trouba had tripped Backes. As time was running out a number all the players on the ice ended up in the corner in the Blues zone, gloves off and fists flying as emotions from this physical game hit the boiling point. The Blues again kept the Jets to just five shots on goal making the final tally 25-17. 3-1 was the final. The Blues did score another with under a second to go, again with Montoya on the bench, but it was eventually ruled play had been whistled down because of the melee in the Jets zone. The power play goal by Backes was the first given up by the Jets in 40 shorthanded road situations. The last time on the road the Jets gave up a power play goal was January 21st in Anaheim. They then went eight road games where the PK was perfect. The Jets outhit the Blues 40-26, with Stuart leading the way with nine. He also led the way in blocked shots with seven. Andrew Ladd led the way in shots on goal with five. Jacob Trouba led in ice time at 24:38. Blake Wheeler led the penalty count with 15 PIM. Jets are now 1-6-1 in the second game of back to backs, as the game ended three in four nights, while the game Wednesday vs Colorado (TSN Jets, TSN 1290) ends a difficult stretch of five games in eight days. For coach Paul Maurice the Jets got the start they wanted. “We had a really good first, on the road, played the night before.” On the penalty to Kane in the third, “We cant be in the box there. Thats the bottom line. That gets called in this league. We have to be responsible for our own play.” On the 3-1 goal, Coach Maurice felt the wrong call was made. That it was incidental skate contact by two players going after the puck. For the Jets it was the same lineup as it was against Dallas, with a chance that Jim Slater and Ondrej Pavelec will be able to return to the lineup Wednesday. Téma: Jak postupovat / ngton State scored 35 points in the PITTSBURGH — Houston manager Brad Mills knows Jimmy Paredes was just trying to make a play. Mills hopes experience will teach his young infielder sometimes its OK to hold up after Paredes was caught in a rundown between second and third in the ninth to snuff out a rally in a 3-1 loss to the Pirates. “You like the aggressiveness but at the same time you like to pick up that learning curve,” Mills said. “Sometimes theres things youd like to go through, and hopefully were going through those now and we dont have to continue to go through the same things.” The Astros had runners on first and second with one out when Matt Downs hit a shallow flyball to centre that dropped in for a hit. Houstons Chris Johnson held up at third, but Paredes didnt realize Johnson had stopped until he was 30 feet past second. Pittsburgh shortstop Ronny Cedeno easily tagged out Paredes and Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan got Jake Shuck to fly out to right and pick up his 35th save. “(Paredes) knew that he was a tying run, and Im sure that hes thinking, Man, I can get to third here, or whatever, and it kind of blocked out everything else,” Mills said. “He was just overanxious, you know, you hate to say it but thats an experience thing thats going to keep coming a little bit with him.” The Astros now have two four-game winning streaks and two four-game losing streaks in the last three weeks, another symptom of a team learning on the fly. Yet Mills was impressed by the play of rookie right-hander Henry Sosa (2-3), who gave up two runs over six innings in miserable conditions. The game was delayed 56 minutes by rain then played in a downpour that became steadier as the afternoon progressed. “Its another quality outing,” Mills said. “He threw the ball extremely well. His ball had good movement and good sink and he went deep into the game for us and gave us a chance.” Houston, however, couldnt come through when it mattered, going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position while being handcuffed by Pittsburghs James McDonald (9-7), who went 7 1-3 innings on 91 efficient pitches. “It was just one of those games where it was just miserable,” said Houstons J.D. Martinez. “You know, youre right there and then — bam. All right, chip away, chip away and – bam, again. It was just one of those days weve got to hope to put behind us and then move on.” McDonald can be dazzling at times with his 95 mph fastball but often struggles with his command, making it difficult to last into the later innings. There were no such issues against the Astros. McDonald worked quickly to work into the eighth for the first time since going eight full against the New York Mets last September. “I feel like things are going in the right direction right now, just getting ahead of guys,” McDonald said. “I think thats the big key to the success today.” The grounds crew frequently added fresh dirt to the pitchers mound to keep it from getting muddy, though portions of the warning track were under water by the late afternoon. “No one wants to pitch under those circumstances,” catcher Ryan Doumit said. “Its hard enough to pitch as it is but with a wet mound its even harder. For him to go out and pitch the way hes pitched just gives you a glimpse of what hes capable of.” Doumit had three hits, Josh Harrison went 2 for 3 and Derrek Lee hit his 16th homer as the Pirates won for the third time in four games. Pittsburgh grabbed the lead for good with two runs in the fourth. Andrew McCutchen led off with an infield single and Sosa — who needed 107 pitches to get through six innings |

Téma: Jak postupovat / er stopped 24 shots Ocala, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – Ha Na Jang fired a 7-under 65 on Thursday and she jumped four strokes clear of the field with the second round of the season-opening Coates Golf Championship suspended by darkness. Jang, who qualified for the event on Saturday, completed 36 holes at 12-under- par 132. World No. 3 Stacy Lewis posted a 2-under 70 and she is alone in second place at minus-8 at Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club. Lydia Ko, the second-ranked player in the world, shot 3-under 69 to move into a share of third place. She was joined there by Azahara Munoz (71) as well as Angela Stanford and Austin Ernst, who were still on the course when play was called for the day. Stanford completed 14 holes of her second round, while Ernst was through 13. Jessica Korda, who shared the first-round lead with Lewis and Munoz, managed an even-par 72. Korda is tied for seventh place with Na Yeon Choi (70). The first round was completed earlier Thursday after being suspended by darkness on Wednesday evening. There was also a 90-minute frost delay on Thursday morning. The second round will resume on Friday at 7:30 a.m. ET. Jang played the back nine first in round two and she dropped in back-to-back birdie chances from the 11th. Birdies at 14 and 16 moved her into the lead at minus-9. Around the turn, Jang continued to roll as she birdied the second and fourth. Her lone stumble came at the par-3 sixth. Jang quickly erased that mistake as she birdied the par-5 seventh. Another birdie at the ninth left her four clear of the field. I think today my (approach) shots were better. I hit some very nice iron shots today, said Jang, who is ranked 21st in the world. Lewis got off to a slow start as she had five pars and a bogey through six holes. She caught fire in the middle part of her round. The reigning LPGA Tour Player of the year birdied the par-5 seventh and made it two in a row with another birdie at the eighth to move to 7-under. After a pair of pars, Lewis birdied No. 11. She spun her third at the par-5 12th within a few feet and she kicked that in for birdie. Her momentum was halted at the 13th. Lewis missed the green with her approach shot and that led to a bogey, which dropped her to minus-8. She wrapped up her round with five pars in a row to end there. We shot some 66s yesterday and I think thats a great score on this golf course. The greens are just so tricky, theres not a lot of hole locations on a couple of the greens, you have to hit it to the right spot, Lewis stated. You can make some bogeys and worse pretty quick. Its just staying patient. NOTES: Jang has six wins on the Korean LPGA Tour, which she has competed on for the last five years … Paula Creamer, who is tied for 16th, had a hole- in-one on the par-3 sixth … With world No. 1 Inbee Park tied for 45th after 36 holes, Lewis and Ko both have a chance to take over the top spot in the world rankings with a victory. Téma: Jak postupovat / ll reportedly return to the Toronto Raptors TORONTO — Toronto FC supporters have wasted little time responding to the clubs recent spending spree. The MLS team says it has sold more than 2,000 new season tickets in the last week in the buildup and hoopla surrounding Mondays announcement of the signings of England star striker Jermain Defoe and influential U.S. international midfielder Michael Bradley. The renewal window for the clubs existing 14,600 season-ticket holders runs through January, with the team expecting some 95 per cent to get back on board. Season tickets at BMO Field, which has a capacity of about 22,000, will be capped at 17,000 with club officials expecting a possible return to a waiting list. The club is also looking to create more premium seats, perhaps via a lounge on the North side of the stadium given existing field seats and tables are sold out. In 2013, Toronto ranked 10th in the 19-team league with average attendance of 18,131. The franchise averaged 20,000-plus over its first five seasons but has dropped to 18,000-plus the last two seasons as results have continued to disappoint. MLSE boss Tim Leiweke has said the team will lose money in 2014, given the outlay on Defoe, Bradley and fellow designated player Gilberto. That financial picture is not helped by the fact that season-ticket holders who renew are paying the same as last year when prices were rolled back to 2007, the year the team entered the league, in a bid to compensate for poor performance on the field. New season-ticket holders do not get that break so the club will make more from them. A team spokesman said new season seat buyers will be paying, on average, $6 per ticket more per game. Toronto is hoping to expand and renovate BMO Field to increase capacity and improve game experience. Toronto, which went 6-17-11 in 2013, kicks off the 2014 season March 15 in Seattle before opening at home March 22 against D.C. United. Keegan Iverson, Chase De Leo and Mathew Dumba also scored for Portland while Goaltender Corbin Boes made 31 saves for the win. Brett Pollock and Henrik Samuelsson supplied the goals for the Oil Kings as Tristan Jarry stopped 31 shots in a losing effort. Edmonton earned three power plays in the first period to Portlands none, but it was the Winterhawks who got off to a fast start. Iverson scored 2:20 into the first period to put Portland up 1-0, a score that held until the Winterhawks added two goals in the final two minutes of the period. Bittners goal with 1:53 left in period was followed by a De Leo strike 57 seconds later to put Portland up 3-0 through 20 minutes. The Oil Kings responded, as Pollock scored his team-leading 11th goal of the post-season to put Edmonton on the board 20 seconds into the second period and Samuelsson scored exactly two minutes later to make it 3-2. Dumbas power-play goal with 37 seconds left in the second rebuilt Portlands lead to 4-2, and Bittner added his second of the game with a wrist shot early in the third. Edmonton went scoreless on four power play chances in the game, while Portland finished 1 for 5. The Oil Kings and Winterhawks are meeting in the WHL final for the third straight season. Edmonton won in seven games in 2012, while Portland took the championship series in six games last season. Matt Hendricks and the Edmonton Oilers proved they arent so bad that they cant beat the lowly Buffalo Sabres — and on the road, no less. The newly acquired forward scored a short-handed goal 57 seconds into the third period, and the Oilers hung on for a 3-2 win in a matchup of the NHLs two worst teams Monday night. Bouncing back from a lethargic effort in a 4-0 loss at Boston on Saturday, the Oilers managed to eke out a win against the only team below them in the overall standings. Edmonton (19-33-6) won for the fourth time in five games and moved six points clear of the Sabres (15-32-8), who dropped to 4-8-4 in their past 16. “We didnt have a very good game in Boston. We let them kind of dictate the game for 60 minutes,” Hendricks said. “Tonight, we didnt have our A game either, but we were able to get a road win.” Justin Schultz and Jeff Petry also scored for Edmonton, and David Perron had two assists. Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 42 shots in helping Edmonton snap an 0-5-1 skid against the Sabres dating to a 4-1 win on Oct. 16, 2003. The Oilers, outshot 44-28, even had the good fortune of getting a break from the officials. Sabres forward Marcus Foligno had a potential tying goal waved off with 10:25 left when referee Gord Dwyer ruled the whistle had blown before the puck went in. Foligno drove in from left side and got a shot off that Bryzgalov appeared to glove. Foligno followed up by poking the puck in. Dwyer, parked at the left post, immediately waved it off and then confirmed the call following a video review. “It was a quick whistle. It was a tough break,” Foligno said. “We could have had momentum after that shift with a goal.” Drew Stafford and Steve Ott scored for the Sabres. Sabres backup goalie Jhonas Enroth stopped 25 shots, dropping to 1-11-5 this season and 0-9-4 in his past 13 starts. The Sabres came up empty in extending their home skid to 0-4-3 — the teams longest since opening the season 0-8-1 in Buffalo. Buffalo gave up the first goal 32 seconds in, was unable to hold a 2-1 lead and then gave away the game while it was on the power play.dddddddddddd With Ryan Nugent-Hopkins off for hooking, the Sabres turned the puck over inside the Oilers blue line. Edmonton forward Boyd Gordon got the puck and threaded a pass through the middle to hit Hendricks, who had sneaked in behind Buffalos defenders. Breaking in alone, Hendricks backed Enroth into the crease and lifted a shot inside the left post. “Great pass,” Hendricks said. “I give him a lot of credit. It was a pretty play. Im sure I wouldve just dumped it in.” Hendricks is a defensive-minded forward who was acquired by the Oilers in a trade with Nashville two weeks ago. Oilers coach Dallas Eakins is impressed with what Hendricks has provided on and off the ice. “Hes preaching all the stuff that we need here,” Eakins said. “Hes been a good penalty-killer for us, but definitely a guy thats very vocal. I think a lot of our guys need to be listening to that because he certainly knows what hes talking about.” Hendricks was happy to contribute with his second goal in nine games for Edmonton. “Your bread and butter is the defensive style of game, so any time you get an opportunity to add to the stat sheet, its a good feeling,” Hendricks said. Bryzgalov then did the rest by stopping the final 31 shots he faced after Stafford beat him with a hard snap shot with 53 seconds left in the first period. One of Bryzgalovs better stops came in the final minute, when he got his glove out to top Alexander Sulzers shot from the right circle that went through a crowd. NOTES: Stafford returned after missing four games with an upper-body injury. To make room on their roster, the Sabres placed LW Matt Moulson (upper body) on injured reserve. … The Oilers are 2-1 in their past three games despite being outshot by a combined 144-80. … The Sabres became the last NHL team to reach 100 goals this season when Ott tied it at 1. Téma: Jak postupovat / ir contrasting backgrounds. Ma OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk is looking for consistency. Like many, the Senators owner had high hopes for the team this season, and he admits to being disappointed at the teams current state. After overcoming key injuries and making a playoff run last season, the Senators look like they have taken a step back. They currently sit sixth in the Atlantic Division with a 13-15-6 record. “I think we could always improve,” Melnyk said. “Theres no question. I just spoke to (general manager Bryan Murray) and the coach and were looking for improvement from certain players. They have to step up and show us what they can actually do.” Melnyk said he has faith in the current players on his team, but added theres a sense of urgency for the team to show signs of improvement. A lack of consistency has been an issue for the Senators and Melnyk said the team is in need of a lengthy winning streak. Ottawa has not won more than three straight games this season. “I mean we are 32, 33 games into the season. Its about time that we start getting into some streaks,” he said. “Nothing beats a nice six, seven or eight game winning streak. Give me six out of eight and Ill be happy.” Melnyk also discussed Murrays future. The general manager is in the final year of his contract and its widely expected that he will get an extension. “Weve had some preliminary talks, me and Bryan,” Melnyk said. “I would love to see Bryan here next year and he would like to finish off with a Stanley Cup and I would like to see him leave with a Stanley Cup. Those are still preliminary so well just continue talking and let things work out where they work out.” Melnyk said re-signing Murray is not a priority at this time. He also said that he gave his full support in allowing assistant general manager Tim Murray to speak with the Buffalo Sabres regarding their general manager opening. Melnyk said he sees no reason to hold individuals back if the right situation arises. As well as struggling on the ice, the Senators have also been a bit of a disappointment at the box office. Ottawa had struggled to fill the Canadian Tire Centre this year with just four sellouts after 18 home games. Despite the empty seats, Melnyk says the team is actually generating better revenue than when they offered reduced ticket incentives. “These are the real numbers,” Melnyk said. “Theres no more gimmicks. This is what it is. This is the only way we can accomplish really getting a solid number out there for everyone to understand where we are.” Melnyk believes much of the Senators attendance issues have had to do with a “wonky” schedule that has seen Ottawa play a number of matinee games as well as numerous Monday night games. “Weve had a very strange schedule this year that made it difficult to sell the walk-up tickets, but our season tickets are up 2,000 seats and our revenue is up,” Melnyk said. Melnyk also knows hes likely to make money on the Senators upcoming contract for regional television rights. The Senators current agreement with Sportsnet expires at the end of the season and Melnyk said the team already has competing bids for next seasons broadcasts. “Here in the Ottawa market we are a good market for television and I think people will pay accordingly,” he said. Melnyk was on hand at the Canadian Tire Centre to present Senators jerseys, helmets and skates to over 100 local children as part of the 10th annual Eugene Melnyk Skate for Kids. Over the past decade Melnyk has purchased equipment for over 1,000 kids. cheap jerseys . Louis Blues remain at the top spot of the TSN.MIAMI — The NFLs report in the Miami Dolphins bullying case is expected to be released soon, shedding further light on the much-scrutinized, troubled relationship between offensive linemen Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito. The report likely will address whether the Dolphins organization was at fault for the locker-room culture that led Martin to leave the team last October. He later said he was harassed daily by teammates, including Incognito, and alleged their racial, aggressive and sexually charged comments played a role in his departure. Incognitos suspension by the team was lifted Tuesday. Dolphins officials say that was an administrative move agreed to by all parties last year, and had nothing to do with any new developments in the league investigation of the case. Last week, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said he has an idea of what will be in the leagues report, and indicated he doesnt expect any new revelations. He said hes proud of the way the people running the franchise responded to the scandal. Martin has said he tried to be friends with Incognito. The two players traded more a thousand text messages in a years span, and the teasing and vulgar banter went both ways, with references to sex, drugs, violence and bawdy behaviour, often in a jocular tone. The back-and-forth continued last week. In his first interview since the scandal broke, Martin told NBC persistent vulgar language around the team made him feel trapped. Incognitos attorney Mark Schamel responded with a statement saying Martin was “hiding behind false allegations” rather than dealing with “his poor on-field performance and myriad other issues.” The NFL report will come from New York attorney Ted Wells three months after he was retained by the league to investigate the case, which inspired a national debate about hazing and workplace bullying. Wells will determine the role of coach Joe Philbin, his staff and Miami management in the case. One issue is whether anyone on the coaching staff ordered Incognito to toughen up Martinn, who became a starter as a rookie in 2012 but played poorly at times.dddddddddddd. Martin has said people in the organization knew he was unhappy about comments teammates made to him, but he didnt talk to Philbin about it. The 6-foot-5, 312-pound Martin abruptly left the team Oct. 28. He was briefly hospitalized and then joined his family in California and underwent counselling for emotional issues. Incognito was suspended Nov. 3 and sat out the final eight games. Both players have said they want to play in 2014, but it likely wont be with the Dolphins. Incognito becomes a free agent next month and will probably sign with another team, and Dolphins are expected to trade or release Martin, who has two years remaining on his contract. In a tweet Tuesday, Incognito said he supported Martin “100 per cent in his return to football in 2014.” Teammates said the two linemen seemed to be good friends, despite their contrasting backgrounds. Martin, 24, was a classics major at Stanford, while Incognito, 30, was kicked off his team at Nebraska and went on to develop a reputation as one of the NFLs dirtiest players known for out-of-bounds behaviour. Incognito has said he regrets racist and profane language he used with Martin, but said it stemmed from a culture of locker-room “brotherhood,” not bullying. Incognito is white and Martin is black. Teammates both black and white have said Incognito is not a racist, and theyve been more supportive of the veteran guard than they have of Martin. In November there were reports that Ross might clean house after the season. But Philbin was retained to return for a third season in 2014, and most of his staff remains, including offensive line coach Jim Turner, who worked most closely with Incognito and Martin. “Jim Turner is an amazing coach and friend,” Incognito tweeted Tuesday. General manager Jeff Ireland left the Dolphins in January after six seasons because of the teams mediocre results, and because he clashed with Philbin over personnel decisions. Téma: Jak postupovat / right foot into the r CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Tony Stewart does not consider the Daytona 500 a disaster, despite the engine problems that spoiled his return to racing from a broken right leg. The three-time NASCAR champion wound up 35th in the season-opening race, but he logged enough laps during Speedweeks that he feels good going into the upcoming stretch of seven consecutive races. Stewart missed the final 15 races last year after breaking his leg in two places during a sprint car crash in Iowa. His first time back in a race car was Feb. 14, the day before he competed — and was crashed out of — the exhibition Sprint Unlimited. He also raced in the Budweiser Duel before the 500, giving him 672 miles of racing in three events. Stewart goes to Sundays race at Phoenix International Raceway “a lot more confident than I was before we got to Daytona.” “I think having all the races that we ran, and actually getting in a crash, while not a great thing, allowed me to sort of test my leg and it felt good,” Stewart said in a Stewart-Haas Racing team release. “There have been some little things that have felt a little different, but for the most part, its felt like an old pair of tennis shoes that youre just comfortable with. I think the whole time in Daytona exceeded my expectations of what I hoped it would be like.” But the 500 itself was a letdown for SHR. Stewart had the engine issue and Danica Patrick was involved in a crash and finished 40th. It left only Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch, the two newcomers to the organization, in contention for a solid finish and both had difficulties at the end. Busch wound up 21st and Harvick was involved in the final accident of the race and finished a team-best 13th. Stewart said Sundays race at Phoenix will be a better indicator of where the team is than Daytona, one of only four restrictor-plate races on the schedule. “Daytona and Talladega have always just been two different forms of racing,” Stewart said, referring to the necessary teamwork and drafting. “What happens at Phoenix and the races after that has to be done on your own. You cant help each other at Phoenix. You just have to go race.” He likes his chances at Phoenix, where he has one win, eight top-fives and 12 top-10s in 23 career starts. Hes completed all but 14 of 7,257 laps on the 1-mile oval. But PIR is also the place that pushed Stewart into becoming a full-time race car driver in 1993. Still working eight-hour days at $5-an-hour at a machine shop in Columbus, Ind., Stewart headed West to run USAC Silver Crown season-opening Copper World Classic. He qualified second to Davey Hamilton, then led 31 of 50 laps before finishing second to Mike Bliss. Stewart earned $3,500 that day — a payout that convinced him running the Silver Crown, Sprint and Midget races across the nation that year sounded a lot better than returning to the machine shop. He never looked back, learning how to adapt in every kind of car he drove out of "fear that Im going to have to get a real job if Im not successful. “To think that it all kind of started at Phoenix, I guess you could say its the place where my career came full-circle,” he said. The Raptors point guard is widely believed to be next on general manager Masai Ujiris chopping block after the first domino – Rudy Gay, Lowrys best friend – fell last week. FRISCO, Texas — Call it a case of being in the right place at the right time. Chicago striker Mike Magee tied for the MLS goal-scoring lead Saturday night by scoring his 19th goal when Alexs shot deflected off Magees ribs and into the goal in the Fires 3-2 win over FC Dallas on Saturday night. Magee, who also had an assist, called it the “the strangest goal Ive ever scored.” A loose ball went to Alex about 20 yards in front. His left-footed shot struck Magee, redirecting the ball on a bounce past goalkeeper Chris Seitz to give Magee his 13th goal in 19 matches for Chicago since being traded from the Los Angeles Galaxy. “I wasnt even surprised because I didnt see anything,” Magee said. “I was trying to protect myself. And then it hit me in the rib cage.” Magee is tied with Montreals Marco Di Vaio for the scoring lead. The victory moved the Fire (13-12-7) into a three-way tie with Montreal and Philadelphia for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with two matches remaining. The top five teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs. New England is one point behind the three teams tied for the last two spots. “Theres still hope,” Fire head coach Frank Klopas said. “We want to be playing for something.” Dallas (10-11-11) rallied from a 3-0 deficit on Kenny Coopers two second-half goals, but was eliminated from playoff contention. Head coach Schellas Hyndmans team can reach no more than 47 points. Five Western Conference teams have 48 or more. Hyndman said, “We had a couple of good chances to tie the game, but in reality, its a disappointing ending for us.” Chicago opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Magee sent a corner kick from the left side to about 10 yards in front of the goal and Juan Luis Anangono headed it in.dddddddddddd The Fire took what looked like an insurmountable lead at 3-0 in the 52nd minute when defender Jalil Anibaba scored his first goal since May of 2012. His shot from 25 yards out hooked just inside the right post as Seitz tried to move over for a save. “Were after our defenders all the time about shooting,” Klopas said. “But he takes a touch and puts it in the corner where its almost impossible for the goalie to make a save. When that happens, its OK for him to shoot.” In the 63rd minute, FC Dallas David Ferreira sent the ball in front of the net, where Cooper battled a defender and shot off the side of his right foot into the right corner. Cooper, who entered in the 12th minute when Mauro Diaz left with a leg injury, added his second goal on a penalty kick in the 75th minute. Fire goalie Sean Johnson went right, and Cooper shot to his left. Johnson made three saves, all on shots by Fabian Castillo. “We just shot ourselves in the foot again, just having to dig ourselves out of a hole,” Dallas midfielder Andrew Jacobson said. “They came out and they pressed us. We couldnt deal with the pressure.” NOTES: Dallas played without defender George John, inactive because of a knee injury. He had started the 11 previous matches. … FC Dallas is 2-9-6 when the opponent scores first. … By winning, Chicago retained the Brimstone Cup — which dates to 2001, when Dallas team was called the Burn. Barcelona coach Gerard Martino tried to reinforce his defence by playing with two holding midfielders in Sergio Busquets and Alex Song. But Song scored an own goal in the 32nd minute in the first of several defensive lapses that doomed the defending champions. Lionel Messi equalized in the 36th, but Antoine Griezmann restored the hosts advantage after an error by defender Marc Bartra in the 54th before setting up David Zurutuza in the 59th with Barcelona turned into bystanders. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid trail Madrid by three points. Atletico plays on Sunday. Gareth Bale scored from a blistering long-range strike to help Madrid win its third straight game without Cristiano Ronaldo, who was finishing a three-game suspension. Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi opened the scoring at the Santiago Bernabeu in the 34th. Bale then squashed Elches timid second-half surge with a blast from about 25 metres in the 72nd before substitute Isco Alarcon sealed the victory in the 81st. Bale was having a discreet outing until his superb strike to secure the three points that made Madrid the overnight pacesetters. The Wales winger received the ball unmarked outside the area, sized up the goal, and unleashed a dipping strike that goalkeeper Manuel Herrera barely grazed before it hit the underside of the bar and bounced in. “I said My goodness, what a goal when I saw the ball pass by,” Madrid fullback Dani Carvajal said. Madrid will visit Schalke 04 on Wednesday in the Champions League final 16 enjoying an unbeaten streak of 26 games in all competitions. Madrid then plays at crosstown rival Atletico next weekend in a highly anticipated league meeting. Also, Celta Vigo fought back for a 1-1 draw at home against 10-man Getafe to leave the visitors winless in the last 10 rounds.dddddddddddd Martino was dismissed by the referee during halftime, and the Barcelona manager had to witness the rare sight of his team being thoroughly dismantled in the second half from the Anoeta Stadium stands as the festive home fans soaked up their big win. The victory moved Sociedad one point out of fourth place and Spains last Champions League spot as the Basque side deployed its best version of its up-tempo attack. Sociedad was unlucky not to widen the final margin when a disheartened Barcelona appeared to tire in the final minutes. Carlos Vela almost capped his outstanding performance in the 81st only for the ball to hit the post. Barcelona went into the match in San Sebastian after affirming its European credentials with a dominant win at Manchester City this week. But this stinging defeat confirmed the change in course in the league title race over the past two months, leaving Madrid in command and waiting to see if Atletico can keep up when it visits Osasuna on Sunday. Martinos move to start Song ended up backfiring when Gorka Elustondo muscled by him to meet Sergio Canales cross, which Elustondo appeared to graze with his head before it hit Song in the chest and landed in the net. Messi combined with Martin Montoya to level when Sergio Busquets craftily let Montoyas pass run between his legs for Messi to rifle it inside the upright of Claudio Bravos goal. It was Messis seventh goal in his last five games in all competitions and his 14th goal in league play despite missing over two months to injury. Sociedad, however, went back ahead to re-ignite its supporters when Bartra headed Bravos goalkick back toward his own area, where Vela was quick to pounce and crossed for Griezmann to volley the ball beyond Victor Valdes and record his 15th league goal. Griezmann then spotted Zurutuza arriving in a second wave, and the midfielder beat Valdes to the cross and knocked the ball in. "They had their best game today and we just werent able to do quite enough to stay in it early. “Its hard when you get hit with an onslaught early the way the guys did.” Nowitzki struggled through much of the series, but the Mavericks pushed the Spurs to the brink of elimination behind strong post-season performances from Monta Ellis, Vince Carter, Devin Harris and DeJuan Blaiir.dddddddddddd “On the court what confounded us was that theyve got shooters all the way around,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. “Dirk Nowitzki gets a crowd, if you double him you, you leave a lot of other open shooters. So we played him pretty much one-on-one, so we could stay at home a little bit better. That and the ability to shoot it; spread the floor, run the sets that Rick does and the speed of Harris and Ellis was tough for us to handle.” Dallas also played a physical series. There were two technical fouls and two flagrant fouls in Game 7 and two more flagrants reversed upon review. Parker was assessed a technical with 31.6 second left in the first quarter after making a layup on and jawing with former teammate Blair as the two ran down the court. DeJuan played four years (for the Spurs). He lived for a year at my house. I love DeJuan.” Blair was later assessed a flagrant foul for elbowing Ginobili in the face on a drive. After the foul, Blair stared down Popovich, who was screaming at officials over the severity of the foul. The flagrant foul energized the Spurs, who went on a 14-2 run to take a 51-27 lead with 8 minutes remaining in the first half. “Everybody was active and kind of focused,” Duncan said. “We had very little mistakes.” San Antonio never led by less than 14 points in the second half.
