JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — South African prosecutors pressing a murder charge against Oscar Pistorius secured a meeting Thursday with Apple officials in the United States over accessing potentially crucial evidence on the double-amputee athletes locked iPhone, they said. Pistorius claimed he forgot the password for the cellphone, one of a number found at his upscale villa after he shot dead girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp Feb. 14, 2013. Investigators have been seeking help from Apple through the F.B.I. since last year to get access to the phone, a spokesman for South Africas National Prosecuting Authority said. Investigators from South Africa would now meet with Apple officials Thursday at the tech giants headquarters in California, spokesman Nathi Mncube said. Pistorius trial starts Monday, giving both prosecutors and Pistorius defence team just four days to analyze any information on the iPhone. Prosecutors would be obliged to also give any evidence they find to Pistorius lawyers. “It can only add on the evidence we already have,” Mncube said in an interview with TV station eNCA. “It cannot be prejudicial to our case. The people concerned, should the evidence be favourable to us, are the defence. Then we have a responsibility to make it available to them as soon as we have it so they can also prepare for the trial.” Mncube also confirmed the meeting and the reason behind it separately to The Associated Press after his telephone interview with eNCA. The prosecution maintains that Pistorius had a fight with Steenkamp before killing her, a cornerstone of its case, and information on the Olympians phone may shed light on events before the pre-dawn shooting last Valentines Day. Pistorius says he shot the model and reality TV star after mistaking her for a dangerous intruder. South African prosecutors hope to have the information from the phone by late Thursday, Mncube said, adding that they would make any evidence from the phone available to Pistorius defence lawyers. He wouldnt comment on what prosecutors might be looking for on the phone. But even without access to Pistorius iPhone, Mncube said the state had enough evidence to support the premeditated murder charge. Court documents indicate prosecutors are expected to build much of their case against the world-famous runner on witnesses who the state claims will testify to hearing a woman in Pistorius house screaming before the sound of gunshots. That suggests a fight and contradicts Pistorius version of events. Prosecutors also will likely try to use the trajectory of the bullets from the four shots fired by Pistorius through a toilet door to show he intended to kill Steenkamp and was not fearful and acting in self-defence. “We are very confident that we have sufficient evidence,” prosecution spokesman Mncube said. “And that the evidence we have already will be more than sufficient to secure us hopefully a conviction in this matter.” Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence for Pistorius should he be convicted of murder in Steenkamps killing, meaning he would have to serve at least 25 years in prison before being eligible for parole. There is no death penalty in South Africa. cheap nfl jerseys . Showing more spark after not taking enough challenging shots on goal in their 1-0 loss Friday night, the Bruins had 18 shots in the first period after managing just 25 in the entire opener. This week, topics cover if and when the Blue Jays should start rebuilding, how good catchers handle a pitching staff and how best to develop young pitchers to best avoid arm problems.DUNEDIN, Fla. — After watching Esmil Rogers stumble, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons pulled out a baseball maxim. “Some of our top guys are putting together some good at-bats and some things like that,” he said. “The key is pitching though. Thats going to take us as far as were going to go this year. Were trying to iron some things out, find out whos going to do what. We want strike-throwers.” Rogers, in the mix for the Jays fifth starter, struck out six in his three innings Thursday in a 7-5 exhibition loss to the Houston Astros. But he also walked two and gave up four runs on five hits including two homers. “First inning he was good. Then he was shaky after that,” was Gibbons pithy assessment of Rogers performance. “The key to him is throwing enough strikes. He could be a heck of a pitcher when he gets the ball into the strike zone. Weve seen it before, thats where he runs into trouble.” With spring training entering its final weeks, the Jays are still looking wondering about their starting rotation. Gibbons pronouncement on pitching, while accurate, is hardly soothing to Toronto fans. Barring injuries, R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle and Brandon Morrow are expected to emerge as the first three starters. Rogers is competing against Drew Hutchison, J.A. Happ, Ricky Romero, Todd Redmond, Kyle Drabek, Marcus Stroman, Sean Nolin and Dustin McGowan for the fourth and fifth spots. Hutchison has drawn praise from general manager Alex Anthopoulos — “We think Drews got a chance to be outstanding” — while Gibbons called Romero “the big talk of camp right now.” But questions remain. Rogers likely did not do himself any favours Thursday after a 1-2-3 first inning that featured a groundout and two strikeouts. Things went downhill from there. “My pitches were a little bit high,” he said. “I lost my control.” Teenage shortstop Carlos Correa, a 19-year-old who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft, and Jon Singleton hit back-to-back homers for Houston in the third inning off Rogers. Correa then drove in two more runs with a blast to centre in the eighth off Neil Wagner. In between, he made a slick fielding play in the fourth to throw out Brett Lawrie. Rogers said the Singleton homer came off a change-up, a pitch he suggested he might put aside for the time being. Starter Dallas&nbbsp;Keuchel pitched four scoreless innings as Houston (7-6) posted its fourth straight win in the spring.dddddddddddd. The last time the Astros won four in a row in the Grapefruit League was in March 2011. McGowan was the best of the Blue Jays pitchers with two scoreless innings despite not having pitched in 10 days after being sidelined by a stomach bug that saw him lose eight pounds. The only blemish on his outing Thursday was a walk. McGowan still thinks of himself as a starting pitcher but, with only four spring innings under his belt, he is behind others. “Theres what I want to be,” he said. “If Im there, great. If Im in the bullpen, also great. Its a win-win situation, I think.” Houston went ahead 2-0 in the second on a Cesar Izturis single after Rogers dug himself in a bases-loaded hole with two walks and a single. Lawrie did his bit for the Toronto defence, gunning down Jesus Guzman at the plate before the Izturis hit. The Blue Jays (6-8) scored three in the fifth off Collin McHugh to cut the lead to 4-3. Houston made it 5-3 in the sixth via a sacrifice fly. Houston threatened again when Toronto pitcher Jeremy Jeffress loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs. He struck out one before giving way to Wagner, who struck out another and then escaped the inning when Ryan Goins made an eye-popping fielding play off a ball that flew off the pitchers body. There was action in the bottom of the seventh as Anthony Gose somehow turned a shallow fly ball into a triple when sliding Houston outfielder Adron Chambers was unable to chase the ball down. Kevin Pillar then was drilled by Josh Zeid with the Jays outfielder taking a long look at the Astros pitcher as he left the batters box. Gose scored on a fielders choice when Pillar was cut down stealing second, cutting the lead to 5-4. Gose also scored on a sacrifice fly in the ninth to make it 7-5 after Correas second homer extended the Houston lead. Keuchel has yet to give up a run in nine innings this spring. He scattered six hits over his four innings Wednesday, striking out two with no walks. The game featured half-brothers Cesar and Maicer Izturis, both starting at second base and batting ninth (the older Cesar for Houston and Maicer for Toronto). Toronto outhit Houston 13-12. The contest, which lasted three hours 11 minutes, drew 4,510 to Florida Auto Exchange Stadium on a 15-degree day. LONDON — With a dominant display of grass-court tennis, Roger Federer kept up his bid for a record eighth Wimbledon title by beating Tommy Robredo in straight sets Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals at the All England Club for the 12th time. The fourth-seeded Federer, who has not dropped a set in the entire tournament, overwhelmed the Spaniard 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 in just over 90 minutes on No. 1 Court. He hit 11 aces, faced only one break point — in the final game of the match — and broke four times in a performance that showed he remains a real contender at the age of 32. “Its really nice the way Im playing,” Federer said. “Im serving well, moving well, returning all right, so all the things are happening that need to be happening to go deep in this tournament again.” Federer received a standing ovation after closing out the match with a serve-and-volley point, hitting a backhand volley that Robredo couldnt handle. The win avenged Federers straight-set loss to Robredo in their last meeting in the fourth round of the U.S. Open. Apart from that defeat, Federer has won all of his 11 matches against the Spaniard. Federer has lost only 32 games in four matches at the All England Club, the same number as defending champion Andy Murray. “Clearly Im very pleased with the first week, and here we go now into the quarters,” Federer said. "Its always really exciting being so deep into a tournament and feeling you are closer to the finish line. “Ive played a lot of matches so things are exactly where I want them to be, but then again youre sort of only in the quarterfinals and thats when the tournament kind of really starts.” Federers win set up an all-Swiss duel with Australian Open championn Stan Wawrinka, who beat Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7), 6-3 to make it to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time.dddddddddddd Federer holds a 13-2 record against Wawrinka, though Wawrinka won their last encounter in the Monte Carlo final in April. In womens play, French Open runner-up Simona Halep breezed into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan. The third-seeded Romanian needed just 57 minutes to beat the 72nd-ranked Diyas, who was playing at Wimbledon for the first time. Her next opponent will be 2013 finalist Sabine Lisicki of Germany, who overcame shoulder trouble to defeat Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in two hours. Halep is the second Romanian woman to reach the quarterfinals at the All England Club, joining Virginia Ruzici, who made it to the final eight in 1978 and 1981. Ruzici is now Haleps manager. Halep, who has reached the quarterfinals at all three Grand Slams this year, is the only player among the top four seeds left in the draw. No. 1 Serena Williams, No. 2 Li Na and No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska are all out. The 19th-seeded Lisicki took an injury timeout while facing break point at 1-1 in the second set and was treated by a trainer on her right shoulder. After returning to the court, Lisicki saved the break point and held serve, then broke in the next game for a 3-1 lead. She was broken by the 72nd-ranked Shvedova while serving for the match at 5-3, but broke again in the next game to close it out. An emotional Lisicki celebrated by falling to her knees at the baseline and resting her forehead on the grass. Both players piled up more unforced errors than winners. Lisicki had 33 errors and 29 winners, while Shvedova had 34 and 18. BOSTON — After picking up his second penalty of the game — one that led to a New Jersey power-play goal — Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand was benched for the last nine minutes of the second period. Just six seconds into the third, he showed that he got the message. “March is a guy that plays on the edge. Every once in a while he crosses that line,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said Tuesday night after Marchand responded to his benching with his fourth goal in three games to give the Bruins a 4-3 win over the Devils. “It was a message sent that he cant put us in that situation. The character he has, he didnt say a word. He just responded with a solid third period.” Marchand scored after breaking for the net off the opening faceoff of the third, and Benoit Pouliot broke a tie with 3:01 left to give the Bruins their sixth consecutive victory. Tim Thomas stopped 27 shots to help the defending Stanley Cup champions move into the playoff hunt after spending the early part of the season at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. “There were a lot of distractions at the start of the year. Maybe we werent really focused on doing the job of being the Stanley Cup champions,” Marchand said. “Now we realize how hard we have to battle every night.” Marchand picked up a penalty for goalie interference in the first period, then another for roughing in the second that led to David Clarksons goal that put New Jersey up 1-0. Marchand spent the rest of the period on the bench. But he came off the faceoff in the third, took a pass from Zdeno Chara and curled into the New Jersey zone before beating Johan Hedberg to make it 2-1 — Bostons first lead of the game. “Any time you get benched, the message is being sent to you. You want to respond,” Marchand said. “Everyone wants to show that they can be depended on.” Hedberg made 33 saves and Nick Palmieri scored twice for the Devils, who had won four of their past five. Chris Kelly and Shawn Thornton also scored for the Bruins, who have 34 goals in their past six games. But it was still 3-3 when Pouliot knocked in the rebound of Rich Peverleys shot from the blue line. “To our credit, we pushed back every time they got one,” Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. “But weve got to be able to seize control and play with a little more composure. Overall this year weve done a pretty good job of that. But tonight we got exposed by a veteran team in the third.” After a scoreless first period, Clarkson scored for the Devils midway through the second and Kelly tied it four minutes later. Then things really opened up in the third. Marchand scored six seconds in, but that lead lasted only about two minutes before Palmieri scored, waiting in the slot for a pass from Andy Greene and beating Thomas to tie it. That was Palmieris first goal in eight games, but he wasnt done. Boston took the lead again when Jordan Caron tipped a pass through his legs to Thornton in front to catch Hedberg off-guard. And New Jersey tied it again when Adam Henrique took the defence with him — clearing out Thomas as well — and leaving Palmieri alone in front for the score. Nathan Horton hit the crossbar with 7:13 left, and with 3 1/2 minutes left Peverley got one to trickle through Hedbergs pads but the Devils were able to pounce on the loose puck as it sat behind him. Notes: Marchand extended his point-scoring streak to nine in six games. … Patrik Elias snapped his seven-game point streak, which had been tied for the longest in the NHL this season. … Thomas (Quebec) and Hedberg (Philadelphia) were taken 217th and 218th overall in the ninth round of the 1994 draft. Neither goalie ever played for the franchise that drafted them. … Bruins Johnny Boychuk, Andrew Ference, Nathan Horton, Milan Lucic and Dennis Seidenberg each bought US$5,000 worth of tickets to the game for local military members and their families. Reliever Drew Storen, already with men on first and second with none out in the seventh inning of a tie game, was on the ropes. Then Storen threw Stanton a slider. Swing and a miss. Strike three. Momentum shifted. Two popouts later, the inning was over with no damage done, and the Washington Nationals scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins. Now its going to cost him — four games and four paychecks. The Colts career sacks leader was suspended Friday by the NFL after violating the leagues ban on performance-enhancing substances. The Toronto Blue Jays got out of the gate with a dismal 10-17 record last season and dug themselves a hole they could never really get out of. Its a scenario they really cant afford to repeat in 2014. Prior to last season, 39 of the last 60 teams that were in first place in their division on June 1 went on to make the post-season. If you look at last years races division by division, there were only two teams that werent in first or second in June who went on to make the playoffs. In the American League West, Texas was in first through April and May with a 34-21 – two games ahead of Oakland. The As went on a 63-32 tear the rest of the way and won the division by five games over the Rangers, who played and lost a sudden death tie-breaker. In the Central, Detroit and Cleveland hit June 1firsy and second in the division with the Tigers leading by a half-game. Detroit wound up taking the division by one game over the Indians. In the East, Boston was on top at 34-23. This is one division where there was a slight exception. Tampa Bay was actually in 4th place heading into the games of June 1 at 30-25. But the Rays were only a half-game back of Baltimore and one game behind the second place Yankees. The Rays finished 61-46 to take second place. The Blue Jays were 23-33 through the first two months and never really came close to getting back in the race, even with that 11 game win streak. In the National League East, Atlanta was 33-22 through April and May and won the division easily with a 96-66 mark. Washington, a pre-season favourite, was 28-28 and missed the playoffs altogether. In the Central, St. Louis got off to a 37-18 start and led the division wire-to-wire on the way to a Major League best 97-65 record. Pittsburgh was third two months in, but overhauled Cincinnati for second place, though both teams won 90 or more and both made the post season. The National League West was the one division where all bets were off after two months. Arizona was on top at 31-24 with a two-and-a-half game lead on the Giants and Rockies. The Dodgers were seven-and-a-half games out through April and May at 23-31. The division practically turned upside down the rest of the way. The D-Backs faded and finished at 81-81 for the second year in a row. San Francisco and Colorado collapsed and both finished 10 or more games below .500. The Dodgers, though, inspired in large part by the arrival of Yasiel Puig went a scorching 69-39 down the stretch and won the division with a 92-70 mark. So it pretty much goes without saying, the Blue Jays need to be at least slightly above .500 through April and May to have any hope of competing in the tough American League East. Their schedule is, by no means, easy with 22 of their 57 games through the first two months against the A.L East, including six against Boston and seven versus Tampa Bay – the two playoff favourites in the division. The Jays only have 10 games over April and May against “lesser” opponentss, with three against Houston, three versus Minnesota and a four-game interleague series against Philadelphia.dddddddddddd 25 of the 57 are against teams that either made the playoffs last season or were involved in tie-breakers. The Jays also have just one day off in the month of May; a real test of the pitching staff. No team will ever admit theyre out of it after just two months. The Blue Jays didnt a year ago. But in five of the six divisions last season, the two-month mark painted a pretty vivid picture of where teams are really at. The other day I was reading about the new head of the Players Association, Tony Clark, when another name in the article caught my name. It was Steve Rogers, who also works for the Association as a liaison to the players among his many duties. I actually had to double check that it was the same Steve Rogers who once pitched for the Expos. It was. If you get into a conversation with anyone as to who the greatest pitcher in Expos history was, some might suggest Pedro Martinez, who went 55-33 in his four seasons in Montreal. Others might say Dennis Martinez for his perfect game, maybe Bill Stoneman for his two no-hitters or Ross Grimsley for being the Expos first 20-game winner. In my mind, though, it was Steve Rogers. I was surprised to see his career record was only 158-152, but its his other numbers that blow you away. Over 13 seasons, all with Montreal, he pitched over 200 innings in nine of them. Six times he was over 250 innings, four times over 270 and in 1977 when he won 17 games he pitched an incredible 300.2 innings. He actually pitched more innings per season than Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax and had a better career ERA at 3.17 than another Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. Rogers was a five-time all-star and finished second in the rookie of the year voting and one year was second in the Cy Young balloting. It was a different era, but compare Rogers numbers to one of the Blue Jays all-time greats Roy Halladay in a couple of categories. Rogers had 129 complete games and 37 shutouts and Halladay had 67 complete games and 20 shutouts. Rogers, 64 now, had to retire at 35 when his shoulder essentially gave out on him. He is a member of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame at St, Marys and tries to get back for the Induction Ceremonies every year. He concedes he might even have had a shot at Cooperstown if he had been able to pitch another 5-7 years and could have won another 70 games. The Expos only made the playoffs once in their history – 1981. Steve Rogers beat Phillies legend Steve Carlton twice in the division series and then defeated the Dodgers in Game 3 of the NLCS. But say his name today and many will only remember his relief appearance on “Blue Monday” at the Big “0,” when he gave up the series deciding homer to the Dodgers Rick Monday. If you look at the numbers and the character of the man, Steve Rogers should be remembered for much more than that. CLEVELAND — Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, who is on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow, was expected to meet with a team doctor Thursday night in Seattle. New York manager Joe Girardi said Tanaka has flown from New York to Seattle, where Dr. Christopher Ahmad, the teams head physician is attending a conference. “Probably within the next 24 hours we will have (an update),” Girardi said before Thursdays game against the Cleveland Indians. “Obviously youre curious to see what the diagnosis is and what they feel the time is necessary to get him back on the mound. So until then we just kind of wait to see what Dr. Ahmad says.” Tanaka, who is tied for the major league lead with 12 wins, had an MRI in New York on Wednesday, one day after the worst outing of his rookie season. He allowed five runs and 10 hits — both career highs — over 6 2-3 innings in a 5-3 loss to the Indians. The All-Star is 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 18 starts, but has lost three of his past four outings. The Yankees signed the 25-year-old Tanaka to a $155 million, seven-year contract in January after he had a standout career in Japan. New York also paid $20 million to his Japanese team, the Rakuten Golden Eagles, for his rights. Tanaka has held together the Yankees battered rotation. CC Sabathia is expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury while Ivan Nova had Tommy John surgery, and wont pitch again until next season. Reassurance came from Paul Tesori, his caddie and close friend whose newborn son is in intensive care in a Florida hospital. “Paul sent me a text this morning, just told me he loved me and wanted to go out and fight as hard as I would any other day,” Simpson said Sunday after doing just that. … thanks to every “buddy” that was involved.Game Speed! We often hear that term. What is it and why is it different? Coaches, for all of time, have asked their respective players and teams to practice fast. Why? Well they are trying to mimic the tempo and flow of an actual game and/or contest. No matter the sport, when the lights go on and the bullets are flying for real, things change and game speed is different than practice. My entire career, every time I took to the practice field, I busted my tail to simulate actual game speed. This stems from growing up in Texas. Not to say that Texas has cornered the market on practicing fast, but I was fortunate to have some unbelievably intense and quality coaches in my earlier football days in Dallas. Every drill was the same for me, whether it be taking drops with the other quarterbacks, working with the big boys and running backs during inside run, skelly or team period. The mindset was to push to get better, dont waste a rep, prove yourself and practice fast. Why? All in hopes of making the actual game slow down. Pushing yourself in these situations is only part of the challenge. Getting your teammates to go 100 per cent all the time to help duplicate actual game speed is critical. Executing at game speed during practice is a total commitment to excellence, by everyone. This mindset has to be shared not only by your offensive teammates but equally important, the “Look Team”. The Look Team is comprised mostly of back-up defensive players, developmental squad members and in some cases, defensive starters. Having the Look Team dialed in and flying around giving you and your teammates exact replication of the anticipated defensive fronts, stunts and coverages, is paramount. If not, you are just fooling yourself and wasting time, which is otherwise known as going through the motions! When you have not been under the lights executing at game speed for a period of time your tempo, rhythm and timing are altered drastically. This period of time away for game action does not have to be very long before the gap starts to develop and execution wanes. Im talking a week or two and BAM, you can be behind…this is very frustrating. Now theres also something else, something very big you have to take into account. Athletes who are away from game action for any length of time are typically recovering from some type of injury. When this happens, athletes have to get over the mental hurdle of being injury free. Believe me, this is a beast in and of itself! When overcoming an injury, no matter how hard you work in practice to try and convince yourself that all is good, its in the real game conditions when the truth is discovered. Why is this? Well in todays game with contact during practice being monitored and certainly limited on so many fronts, actual game conditions from this standpoint are difficult to duplicate. Once back into the tthe fray and you are convinced mentally that you are one hundred percent, now you can concentrate on dealing with the tempo, rhythm and timing of game speed.dddddddddddd We see many examples of this every week in sport. On Monday Night Football this week, we saw the likes of Johnny “Football” Manziel adapting to game speed at a completely different level. It almost looked like he had never played the game before. His timing was horrendous and thats game speed coming into play, rearing its completely different, sometimes ugly head, or in Johnnys case, finger. Take for instance 2011 CFL Most Outstanding Player Travis Lulay in his three brief appearances in this past weeks game versus the Argos. Travis looked like he was having a few problems adjusting to game speed, and thats putting it nicely! Perfect example of a player first having to overcome the mental hurdle of injury and secondly trying to adjust to the speed of the game. We know Lulay can do it, as hes done it before. With Manziel, thats a different story! Ill give you an example of all this coming together. When there is an all out focus coupled with a consistent effort and will to prepare to win, good things will happen. Theres nothing like being on top of your game, knowing that you have put in the time and have done everything humanely possible to have success when the lights go on. All that preparation, video study, conditioning, rehab, practicing at full speed, effort and training does pay off. Theres stepping into the huddle with your teammates, looking them in the eye and confidently calling a play anticipating a certain defensive front, stunt and coverage. Telling them this is money, a touchdown if we all do our jobs. After a few coaching points and reminders to the guys, you break the huddle and cruise up to the line of scrimmage. Watch the defence react to your formation, connect the dots and already know, BANG, you got em! Your guys go into motion, which gives you even more indicators that the right play is called and now its just a matter of going through your cadence, taking the snap, looking a defender off opening up more room for your target and delivering a strike that puts six points on the board! Thats what its all about! Being in control and executing at the highest level. Ex-players often say that they miss the guys in the locker room the most after they retire, thats definitely part of it, but for me its also the precise execution with those same guys on the field, due to all the hard work and sacrifices made together. Thats what I miss the most! If Ive said it once, Ive said it a hundred times. You have to play the game to learn the game and so much of this is adjusting to the speed of the game at all levels. Now go out there and earn that opportunity to play by practicing fast, and make sure its at game speed! Ready Break!!! TORONTO — Nazem Kadri and the Toronto Maple Leafs like to think of the first period as the most important 20 minutes of the game. That worked out well against the Philadelphia Flyers, though making the third period their worst almost didnt. The Leafs blew two leads after the second intermission but managed to rebound to beat the Flyers 4-3 in overtime Saturday night at Air Canada Centre. “It feels good,” game-winning goal-scorer Joffrey Lupul said of bouncing back. "We dont want to make a habit of blowing third-period leads. Things are going to happen, other teams are going to make plays and we stuck with it. “There was a good feeling on our bench going into overtime. It seemed like everyone had their composure and were calm and we got the result we needed.” The result was the Leafs second straight overtime victory but also the fourth game in five since the Olympic break that involved blowing at least one third-period lead. Toronto had a two-goal lead 3:38 into the first by virtue of goals by Jake Gardiner and Kadri, but that slipped away after Flyers defenceman Kimmo Timonen scored twice. Mason Raymonds go-ahead goal later in the third was then erased when Braydon Coburn beat Jonathan Bernier with plenty of traffic in front. That was the sixth time the Leafs had coughed up a lead in the final period of regulation in the past five games. Gardiner called it “a little bit of a collapse defensively,” and it was hard for his teammates to disagree given this disturbing trend. “Obviously thats a little bit of a concern, but thats not something thats drawing our complete attention,” Kadri said. “Obviously our D-zone could be a little tighter, but thats something weve got to work on.” With 17 games left in the regular season, theres some time to go to work, but most importantly, Leafs players took out of Saturday night the satisfaction of not caving in and managing to pick up two valuable points. Toronto (34-23-8) now has 76 points, two up on the Tampa Bay Lightning for the third playoff spot in the Atlantic Division. “Thats really what we focus on: we show character to stay in games,” Kadri said. “Even though its a little bit deflating at times giving up a couple goal-leads in the third period, especially late to force overtime, we stay positive and came out with the right outcome.” Coach Randy Carlyle had his issues with the Leafs performance, like when he thought players stopped skating at the end of the second period and how several stayed on the ice for shifts that were too long for his liking. But he, too, took a positive out of regrouping after Coburn tied the score again at the 17:28 mark of the third. “A lot of times when the game gets away from you, your team goes and continues to spiral,” Carlyle said. “Well we didnt spiral, in my mind. Maybe if I re-watch it again Ill have a different opinion, but it didnt seem like we were under siege in the third.” At the start, the Leafs had the Flyers (33-24-7) under siege. The goals by Gardiner and Kadri came on Torontos first four shots against Steve Mason, who looked shaky for at least the first handful of minutes. From Coburns perspective, it wasnt just Mason, who stopped 32 of the 36 shots he faced. “We had an awful start,” he said. “We cant start hockey that way.” While Leafs winger Troy Bodie, who helped set up Gardiners goal as part of his two-assist night, noticed a jump from those two early goals, it put Philadelphia in a major hole that it had to climb out of the rest of the game. “The first 10 minutes of the game, we didnt play that good and they were able to score two goals, but I think the next 50-54 minutes, we were skating and working and creating chances,” said Timonen, who scored his first career goals against the Leafs in his 30th game against them. “We were a better team after that first 10 minutes.” Bernier made several memorable saves among his 28 to keep the Flyers from breaking through until the third period. And Mason bounced back to stop 29 consecutive shots between Kadris goal in the first and Raymonds in the third. “He held us in there,” Flyers coach Craig Berube said. “I thought he did a real good job, made some big saves. Theyre a good offensive team, they make plays and he came up big.” What usually makes the Leafs such a good offensive team is big contributions from James van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel. That top line was kept off the score sheet Saturday night, but goals from Gardiner, Lupul, Raymond and Kadri got Toronto two points and could portend good things moving forward. “I think thats what is going to be a key to our success as the season goes on,” Lupul said. “As good as our first line has been, it would be asking a lot for them to sustain the pace theyve had these past 10, 15 games. Were going to have to step up and were getting opportunities. Tonight some of them went in for us.” The Leafs biggest question mark going into a five-game road trip that starts Monday in Anaheim is how to stop other teams from putting the puck in the net so much, especially while leading in the third period. Lupul credited the Flyers for being a desperate opponent, while also considering it could be partially because of inexperience on the part of the Leafs. “Wed like to do a little better job defending or actually staying on the offence, but sometimes the other team is going to make some plays, too,” he said. “We wouldve loved to hang on and not need overtime.” It was in overtime that Lupul was able to come through as the hero, scoring on a tic-tac-toe passing play that started with Carl Gunnarsson and Dion Phaneuf. “We finished strong and Neuf and Lupes made a great play on the last goal,” Gardiner said. Lupuls 19th goal of the season managed to at least temporarily shift this problem into the background. Or perhaps it wont become a real issue until the Leafs lose one of these games in regulation, as they improved to 24-1-2 when leading after two. “I dont think we want to keep that path going,” Gardiner said. "They go both ways sometimes, and tonight we got it. NOTES - Winger David Clarkson was scratched for the Maple Leafs after a pulled muscle from Fridays practice continued to bother him. The Arena das Dunas in the northeastern city of Natal sustained minor damage during the protests, but demonstrators stayed away on Sunday and officials said the stadium passed its first test, with only minor adjustments needed going forward. SEATTLE — Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma added to his dominant streak against the AL Central. The All-Star right-hander struck out seven and walked none in eight innings to run his scoreless streak against division teams to 48 2-3 innings in the Mariners 1-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night. It is the second-longest streak by any pitcher against one division dating to 1974. Orel Hershiser tossed 55 straight scoreless innings against NL West opponents in 1988. “Hes got a good two-seamer and his split was pretty much unhittable today,” Kansas Citys Billy Butler said. “He was mixing a slider in there and had all three pitches working at any time. He was throwing them all for strikes.” Iwakuma (2-0) scattered four singles and allowed only one baserunner to reach second in his second start of the season. Iwakuma, who began the year on the disabled list with a strained tendon on the middle finger of his pitching hand, bolsters a strong pitching staff that has helped the team win 11 times in the last 14 games since losing eight straight from April 15-22. “Hes getting better each and every time out,” Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. “I think if you asked him, theres a lot more in there. Theres a lot of room for improvement, but that just goes to show how good he really is.” Despite limiting the Mariners to just two hits and one run in six-plus innings, Danny Duffy (1-3) was the hard-luck loser for Kansas City. He has allowed two hits and a run in each of his first two starts this season after pitching out of the bullpen to begin the year. Both times he has been stuck with the loss. The Mariners pushed across the lone run in the third. Mike Zunino led off with a double for Seattles first hit and moved to third on a sacrrifice bunt.dddddddddddd After a strikeout, Duffy intentionally walked Robinson Cano. Corey Hart followed with a run-scoring single up the middle that proved to be the difference. Seattle hitters have driven in runs three out of the six times opposing teams have intentionally walked Cano this season. “Offense didnt win the game, Kuma obviously was dominant,” Hart said. “Any time a pitcher throws like that, you try to scrap any run you can get across, and one was enough. A guy throws like that, you hate to lose.” Kansas City managed just four singles and advanced a runner to second base only once during the first eight innings. The Royals had their best opportunity to score in the ninth when Fernando Rodney walked two, but the closer struck out Butler and induced a game-ending groundout. Rodneys 10th save in 11 chances kept the Royals off the board for the 27th straight inning, a streak that dates to September 2013. “Our guys are grinders,” McClendon said. “I think theyve proven that they know how to get back up off the mat, so to speak. This has been a tough month and a half for us in a lot of different ways, but I think when its all said and done, maybe were not as bad as people thought we were going to be.” NOTES: Seattle LHP James Paxton, on the DL with a strained left lat muscle, played catch and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday. … Mariners RHP Taijuan Walker is scheduled to toss in the bullpen Sunday after playing catch on Thursday. Hall of Famer Paul Coffey was recently suspended by the Greater Toronto Hockey League for using a “discriminatory slur,” according to The Hockey News. THN.com reported Wednesday that Coffey, who coaches his son Blakes Toronto Marlboros midget AAA team, was involved in a verbal confrontation last Friday during their playoff game against the Mississauga Senators. The hockey publication added that Coffey was originally assessed a gross misconduct penalty for a discriminatory slur and was handed a three-game suspension after an automatic investigation by the GTHL. Coffey was not behind the bench with his team for their playoff game on Tuesday night. The GTHL would not confirm that Coffey was suspended, as its not league policy to disclose its suspensions. However, the league did confirm that the altercation happened and was not considered too serious. “From what I understand, the two opposing coaches went at each other near the end of the game,” GTHL President John Gardner told The Toronto Sun on Wednesday. "People do and say crazy things at this time of year, its the playoffs. I think it has been blown out of proportion. “Paul Coffey is a good coach who has done nothing wrong since being involved in this league. But lets face it, hockey is an emotional game and people sometimes say things they dont mean.” Neither the Marlies nor Coffey have commented about the incident or the decision, but an official from Mississauga did tell the The Hockey News that the Senators lobbied the GTHL to be lenient, sharing the same sentiment that the situation was being blown out of proportion. “Obviously there has to be punishment, regardless of who is involved,” Gardner added. “But in my opinion, I would say this was a minor incident.” Coffey, 52, played for 21 seasons in the NHL, winning four Stanley Cups and three Norris trophies as the leagues best defenceman. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004. Files from The Hockey News and The Toronto Sun were used for this report. nike roshe run cheap . Encarnacion hit a pair of two-run homers for Toronto as the Blue Jays took a big lead early and held on to beat the slumping Boston Red Sox 7-4 on Tuesday night. Encarnacion has hit nine of his 11 homers this season this month, which has 10 days left. “He is pretty good,” Toronto manager John Gibbons said. “But even last year I think he got off to a slow start somewhat. Its not going to hold him down. Its usually just a matter of time.” Melky Cabrera and Erik Kratz also homered for the Blue Jays, who won for the sixth time in eight games and extended Bostons losing streak to five straight. J.A. Happ (3-1) struck out six in the first three innings and picked up his third win in four starts since joining the rotation. “I felt like it was going to be a good night,” Happ said. “I was trying to attack the zone and I felt my location was good.” Jonny Gomes hit a two-run homer for Boston. The losing streak is the longest for the Red Sox since 2012. Casey Janssen picked up his fourth save, with a rocky ninth inning. Dustin Pedroia and Shane Victorino led off the ninth with consecutive singles. David Ortiz nearly tied it with a long fly ball that drifted foul, and then struck out. Janssen got Mike Napoli to ground into a double play to end it. “If you get to the ninth inning with the lead and youve got your closer in there, youve just got to let it ride. You try to get to that point and the games on the line,” Gibbons said. Encarnacion hit a two-run homer in the third and Kratz added a solo shot in the fourth off Felix Doubront (2-4), who left the game after Jose Reyes and Cabrera opened the fifth with back-to-back doubles. The Red Sox said Doubront complained of fatigue in his left shoulder. “This is the first night hes felt this to this extent. His stuff was diminishing even in the early innings, particularly between the fourth and fifth,” Boston manager John Farrell said. Edward Muujica replaced Doubront and struck out Jose Bautista, but Encarnacion followed with a towering shot to left for his second two-run homer of the night and Toronto led 6-0.dddddddddddd Boston scored twice in the fifth, and then Cabrera added a solo shot to left in the sixth. Happ started the sixth but was pulled after Gomes two-run homer cut Torontos lead to 7-4. He allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out six. Napoli led off the sixth with a single and Gomes followed with a homer that bounced off the top of the Green Monster. Crew chief Gary Cederstrom needed only about 30 seconds to review the video before confirming it was a home run, pulling Boston within 7-4. Boston is on its longest skid since losing the last eight games of the 2012 season. The Red Sox were 3 for 14 with runners in scoring position and left nine on base. “Were in a little rut right now but well find a way to get out of it,” Pedroia said. Boston loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but third baseman Brett Lawrie helped get Happ out of the jam. Lawrie lunged at a line drive by Xander Bogaerts that was headed for left field. The ball bounced out of his glove when he landed, but Lawrie quickly grabbed it, tagged third for the force out and threw it to Kratz to double-up David Ortiz at the plate. “Lawrie made an unbelievable play,” Happ said. “I dont know if anybody else makes that play. Really athletic. That was huge.” Doubront allowed five runs on five hits, striking out two and walking three. HONOLULU — Kansas City and San Francisco will have plenty of clout in Honolulu if they dont make it to New Jersey for the Super Bowl. The NFL revealed Friday that the Chiefs and 49ers each had eight players voted into the Pro Bowl, including running backs Jamaal Charles of Kansas City and Frank Gore of San Francisco. Denver quarterback Peyton Manning was selected to his 13th Pro Bowl after receiving the most votes among fans, 1.43 million. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees was second among fans with 1.2 million votes. The NFL combines votes from fans, players and coaches to determine 86 of 88 Pro Bowl players; the other two players are long-snappers selected by Pro Bowl coaches. Voting ended Thursday. Under a new format this year, NFL greats Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders will divvy up the players in a two-day draft before the Jan. 26 game. Offensive and defensive players with the most votes who dont make it past the divisional playoff round will serve as active player captains. Charles said Friday night on a reveal show on the NFL Network that he should be picked first. “I think I got the best skillset of anybody on the roster,” Charles said. “I think I can play wide receiver and then put the ball in my hand, also. The only thing I cant do is throw the ball.” Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly said hell be fine wherever hes picked. “I dont know, you got to get the guy who scores points,” he said. The schoolyard-style selections mean its likely teammates will be forced to play on opposite sides. Players on the winning team will earn $53,000 while the losers will get $26,000 under the collective bargaining agreement. San Francisco linebacker NaVorro Bowman said he thinks it would be weird to have to tackle Gore or Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis. “I might not tackle him,” Bowman said. “Just let him score and get his yards or whatever. Yeah, thatd be weird because that hasnt happened since training camp.” Rice and Sanders playfully bantered about possible selections, with Sanders saying he wanted players on his roster who havent been to many Pro Bowls. “If you have five years or more, dont even worry about it Im not going to pick you,” Sanders said. “Go play for Jerry.” Rice said later: “Youre trying to bait me — thats not going to happen.” Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman received 552,600 votes by fans, the most for any defensive player. Houston defensive end J.J. Watt had just under 410,000 fan votes. San Francisco is set to send eight players to the game for the second year in a row, though its players missed the game earlier this year because they made the Super Bowl, losing to Baltimore. Kansas Citys eight selections are up from six last year. The Chiefs are 11-4 this year — up from 2-14 last year — and the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs heading into a largely meaningless game for them against San Diego on Sunday. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday he has never been big on Pro Bowl selections. “Im happy for the guys when and if they make it. Im proud of them for it,” Reid said. “But we dont get caught up in all of the individual accolades. (Were) just getting ourselves ready to play.” Manning was one of five players selected from Denver, which has a shot at putting up the most points of any team in NFL history. All but five teams had at least one player selected. Atlanta, Green Bay, Jacksonville and both New York teams had zero players selected. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Cornerback Chris Harris Jr. doesnt see any reason to lament his lot in life right now. Despite dealing with a torn left ACL that sidelined him for the Super Bowl and probably cost him $1 million in salary next season, the Denver Broncos most versatile cornerback was thrilled to sign his one-year restricted free-agent tender Tuesday. It will pay him $2,187,000 next season — or more than 1,000 times the $2,000 signing bonus he received four years ago as an undrafted college free agent. “Ill take it,” Harris told The Associated Press. “Im definitely happy with it. Im excited to go back out there, get back healthy and lead this team back to the Super Bowl.” Had Harris not gotten hurt in the playoffs, the Broncos would have probably had to use the highest tender on him — a one-year deal worth more than $3.1 million that carried a first-round pick as compensation. Instead, they were able to use the second-highest tender available. With the Broncos able to match any offers, no suitors came calling for Harris, whos been rehabbing at the Broncos facilities since shortly after undergoing surgery in February following Denvers loss to Seattle in the Super Bowl. “Teams were not going to give up a second-round pick. We realized that,” Harris said. “We know that next year is a big year for me.” Harris ligament in his left knee wasnt completely torn when he got hurt against San Diego in the playoffs and he and the Broncos are optimistic hell be ready by the start of training camp in July and will resume his role as a leader on Denvers defence. If that happens, the Broncos are expected to work toward a longer-term deal for Harris after next season when he hits unrestricted free agency. “I definitely think Ill be close to 100 per cent by the start of training camp,” Harris said. “You never know with this type of injury, but the ligament wasnt completely torn and right now Im feeling great. The treatment is going great and Im improving each week.” Harris is coming off a monster year in which he posted 65 tackles, 58 of them solo, three interceptions and 14 pass breakups while allowing the fifth-fewest yards receiving (25 a game) and tying for the eighth-fewest completions allowed (35) in the NFL among players targeted at least 60 times. His emergence and versatility playing both the slot and on the outside helped the Broncos decide to bid farewell to star Champ Bailey this off-season after he played sparingly last year. Then, the signing of fellow University of Kansas alum Aqib Talib led to the departure of free agent Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. “Champ and I always talked and we kind of understood this would probably happen. We werent surprised” by Baileys exit, Harris said. "Losing Champ, I feel I can take over his role on the field and also I can take over his leadership role. If you look at it, I was the starting corner pretty much the whole season last year. “You see my production and you see Talib, me and him have played together before, so were familiar with each other communication-wise, chemistry-wise, and thats a big thing.” Harris was a freshman at Kansas in 2007 when Talib was an All-American his junior year before being drafted in the first round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that following spring. “Weve always been pretty tight. And friends always joke around saying, What if you and Talib play together now?” Harris said. “Now, its kind of crazy. I was just a freshman. I was young and still learning the game. Now, Im in my fourth season in the NFL and with all Aqibs experience, weve got a pretty solid duo. Its going to be great.” ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ___ Follow AP Pro Football Writer Arnie Melendrez Stapleton on Twitter: http://twitter.com/arniestapleton . Making his 13th PGA Tour start, the 26-year-old Hadley had four birdies in an early five-hole stretch and also birdied the par-4 14th in wind gusting to 25 mph. “It was frustrating, to be honest with you, even though I was playing well, just because I hit it so well today and I missed quite a few putts, a lot of putts the last 11 holes,” Hadley said. "But you know what, were right where we need to be. Im leading and thats great. “Is hard to be satisfied with how well I hit it, but we need to keep in perspective that were leading and were in a great spot for tomorrow.” Hadley had a 16-under 200 total. “Im going to go at just about every flag,” Hadley said. “You got to stay aggressive out here. Ive learned that. For me, if I kind of take the foot off the pedal a little bit, Ill kind of lose focus and I wont be as sharp as I would like to be, so I plan on being really aggressive.” Danny Lee was a stroke back after a 66. “It was another good day of golf,” Lee said. “I was hitting it really well at the beginning and putting is good. I think everything is going really nicely at the moment.” Hadley won twice last year on the Web.com Tour, taking the Rex Hospital Open in his hometown of Raleigh, N.C., and the season-endiing Web.ddddddddddddcom Tour Championship. In Raleigh, he began the final round five strokes behind Lee and rallied to beat the New Zealand player by two strokes with a 64. “I was thinking about that a little bit,” Hadley said. “Danny and I are great friends and were going to have a blast. I think were playing twosomes tomorrow, so well have a blast out there, and hopefully we can kind of duel it out. Obviously, I would love to come away with a victory.” Jason Gore and Jonathan Byrd were tied for third at 14 under. Gore shot 66, and Byrd had a 67. Gore pointed to a recent talk with former basketball star Charles Barkley for his strong play. “I just met Charles that day, and he goes, So whats been wrong the last few years?” Gorse said. “I said, You know, I kind of just lost my love for the game. He goes, Well, why? I said, Man, I have a family. He said, Man, I aint buying that. … He goes, Why would you not want to provide your family a better life, and doing something you love. And it was one of those things, it wasnt Nostradamus or anything like that. He didnt break any barriers there, but it did kind of hit a hard string and made me stop to think why would I not want to be better for them and provide better, and lucky to get to do what I do.” James Driscoll, the second-round leader after matching the tournament record with a 63, had a 75 to drop into a tie for 20th at 9 under. NEW YORK, N.Y. – Put aside the playoff talk. Jacoby Ellsbury and the New York Yankees are having a tough enough time with Houston. Scott Feldman shut down the slumping Yankees again, and Robbie Grossman snapped a seventh-inning tie with a two-run single that sent the Astros to a 5-2 victory Wednesday night. Dexter Fowler had an RBI double, Jose Altuve added a run-scoring single, and the Astros (54-73) did more damage to New Yorks post-season chances with their fourth victory in five meetings this year. Houston, which has finished with the worst record in the majors each of the past three seasons, won a series at Yankee Stadium for the first time in four tries. The fourth-place Astros improved to 4-7 in the Bronx and will go for a three-game sweep Thursday afternoon. “We havent been giving up toward the end of the game. We just keep grinding out at-bats, and things are working out for us,” Grossman said. Stephen Drew hit his first homer for New York, and Ellsbury drove in a run with a bunt single. But the Yankees (63-61) lost for the seventh time in nine games and dropped five games out of a playoff spot. They are 2 for 17 with runners in scoring position during the series and have totalled 20 runs in their last nine games, never scoring more than four in that stretch. “Weve got to score more than two runs. Its hard to win when you only score two runs,” manager Joe Girardi said. “Our pitching has been pretty good, but thats a pretty tall task.” Ellsbury flied out against Jose Veras with two on to end it. New York stranded 10 in all. “I knew it was in the park. It was a great sinker,” Veras said. Feldman (7-9) matched a career high by throwing 121 pitches and worked out of trouble to last 6 2-3 innings. He gave up two runs and eight hits, striking out a season-best seven. The right-hander tossed 6 2-3 shutout innings to beat the Yankees on opening day. Houston had lost his previous six road starts, but he entered with a 2.30 ERA during four straight quality starts against New York. “Hes a veteran guy and hes been around the game for a long time. He knows how to pitch,” Fowler said. Making his second start since a long injury layoff, Michael Pineda took a 2-1 lead into the seventh. He threw 89 pitches and was pulled after a leadoff walk to Jason Castro. Looking to rest his best relievers following a heavy workload the past few days, Girardi turned to David Huff (2-1) and Esmil Rogers. They failed miserably, ruining the managers bobblehead night. Houston smacked five straight one-out singles, four off Rogers, in a span of 10 pitches. “We have relied on the home run quite a bit, and today was a prime example of keeping the line moving,” Astros manager Bo Porter said. “I felt like guys had great at-bats.” No. 9 batter Jake Marisnick tied it with a single to left, Grossman put the Astros up 4-2, and Altuve added an RBI single as the boos increased for Rogers. “When the other guys are used a lot, guys have to step up,” Girardi said. “It just didnt happen tonight.” Kevin Chapman struck out Ellsbury with runners at second and third to end the bottom half. Veras worked the ninth for his first save since Sept. 2, 2013, with Detroit. “It was nice to see Chapman come in, probably the biggest part of the game, and pick me up. I owe him a dinner or something like that,” Feldman said. Seemingly resigned to trying small ball, the Yankees went 4 for 5 on stolen base attempts in the first five innings. But one pitch after Chase Headley was caught at second in the fourth, Drew hit his fifth home run of the season. The other four came with Boston before a July 31 trade. TRAINERS ROOM Astros: Regular closer Chad Qualls was unavailable because of a stiff back. He is day to day. Yankees: Slumping DH-RF Carlos Beltran sat out because of pain in his troublesome right elbow and was examined by a doctor. He had his third cortisone shot and is day to day. “Hopefully, this is the last one,” said Beltran, who hopes to return to the lineup on Friday. “At the end of the year I have to address it and get the surgery to get it over with, but right now Im just trying to finish the season.” … RHP David Phelps (elbow inflammation) played catch and will try to get ready to come off the disabled list as a reliever, Girardi said. UP NEXT LHP Dallas Keuchel (10-8, 3.11 ERA) makes his first career start against the Yankees in the series finale. RHP Brandon McCarthy is 4-2 with a 2.30 ERA in seven outings for New York since he was acquired from Arizona in early July. HERE COMES TROUBLE Fowler is 9 for 20 (.450) with six extra-base hits against the Yankees this year. NICE GRAB Yankees LF Brett Gardner tumbled head over heels over a low retaining wall to make a courageous catch in the ninth. BEREA, Ohio — Johnny Manziel held up his new brown No. 2 jersey and flashed a smile that beamed to Texas. With whirring cameras providing the soundtrack, he was welcomed to his NFL home. Johnny Football arrived. Cleveland may never be the same. Humble, confident and charmingly comfortable in handling any question, Manziel was introduced Friday by the Browns, who positioned themselves perfectly in the first round of the draft to select the polarizing Texas A&M quarterback with equal amounts of skill and swag. Sitting alongside fellow first-round pick Justin Gilbert, a cornerback from Oklahoma State taken 14 picks ahead of him, Manziel said hes stepping into a life he believes will be even crazier than his college days. “Im going into it expecting madness,” he said. Manzielmania hit Cleveland like a spring thunderstorm Friday. As of 6 p.m., the Browns had sold 2,300 season tickets — renewals and new purchases - since the start of Thursdays first round. In the hours after Manziel was chosen with the No. 22 overall pick, the teams sales staff struggled to keep up with phones that barely stopped ringing. At the teams gift shot in FirstEnergy Stadium, fans waited in long lines to buy Manziel jerseys at $150 a pop. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner took all the attention in stride. Hes used to it, having had his every move on and off the field chronicled since the first time he scrambled out of the pocket and made a magical play for the Aggies. “It means a lot to me, obviously,” Manziel said about Clevelands hyped reaction. “Ive gotten a lot of support already, but theres work that needs to be done.” Manziel said he doesnt carry the burden of being Johnny Football, the kid who turns giant stadiums into his personal playground and the one who occasionally hangs out with rap stars and LeBron James. “Im Johnny Manziel,” he said. “Johnny Football is what I am in the media and what is out there. I accept it and Im very accepting of it. At the same time, I know who I am. Im Johnny Manziel from Kerrville, Texas. I dont let that get to me too much or let all that weigh me down or ever make me lose sleep at night.” As he spoke, Gilbert quietly took it all in as he sat next to his famous teammate. Gilbert confessed to getting caught up in Manziels selection while he was in New York. " I was on my way back to the hotel and I think my mom or somebody told me that we had Johnny Manziel so I let down the (car) window and started screaming, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Browns were here," he said. “Im excited hes here. I expect nothing but the best from him.” The Browns have been waiting for someone, anyone like Manziel for years. The team has started 20 quarterbacks since 1999, a roll call that begins with Ty Detmer and includes first-round busts like Tim Couch, Brady Quinn and Brandon Weeden. Manziels well aware of the Browns failings and hopes to be the one to solidify things. “I have goals for myself, expectations,” he said. “But I feel like if I put in the time necessary and I do what Im supposed to do and really open myself up to these coaches and let them teach me and mould me into being a good football player and continue to build on what I did the past couple years as far as getting better year by year, piece by piece, then Ill have some success. Ill believe that.” Manziel knows there are those who feel his size will limit his success. Hes the first QB under six feet to be taken in the first round since 1953. “You can measure height,” he said. “You cant really measure heart.” Manziel will compete with Brian Hoyer to open next season behind centre. Hoyer started two games before sustaining a season-ending knee injury in 2013, but is the incumbent. When he was told by general manager Ray Farmer that the team was drafting Manziel, Hoyer said, “bring it on.” Manziel wasnt surprised by Hoyers reaction. “I wouldnt expect anything less,” he said. “Hes a competitive guy. I feel like thats exactly what I want in a teammate.” Manziel has spent most of the past two years in a fishbowl, so it was no surprise that photos of his post-draft celebration in New York with family and friends, including Drake and Cavaliers All-Star guard Kyrie Irving, quickly circulated through social media. One photo showed Manziel swigging from a magnum of champagne. Asked about his late-night actions, Manziel offered a quick defence. “Im 21 years old,” he said. Manziel intends to shelve the party-boy antics as he strives to live up to his game-changing reputation and show the Browns they made the right move in drafting him. Hes not looking for any special treatment and intends to earn the trust and faith of teammates. “Im low guy on the totem pole,” he said. "I know my place. More than anything I need to show these guys with actions, other than words or anything I can say, to earn their respect. It really is all about earning these guys respect. Im going to do all that I can to try and make these guys comfortable with me every day and know that I want whats best for this team. “Im going to come in and work extremely hard.” Johnny Lunchbox. Not exactly bursting with sentimental feelings, Matthew Lombardi makes an odd return to the state of Tennessee on Thursday night.ST. LOUIS — Jhonny Peralta went deep twice, ending the St. Louis Cardinals 366 at-bat homerless drought. The first would have been plenty for Adam Wainwright. Wainwright became the majors first five-game winner and Peralta had two home runs and four RBIs in a 7-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. “Im really having more fun pitching right now than I ever have,” Wainwright said. "Its just such a chess match. “I feel Im right where I want to be and so Im going to work extra hard to stay there and not get complacent.” Matt Holliday, Allen Craig and Yadier Molina also had RBIs for the Cardinals, who totalled five runs in their previous four games. St. Louis took two of three from the Pirates, shutting them out in both wins. “We got some big hits today, gave him a little bit of room to breathe,” manager Mike Matheny said. “Even though weve got all the faith in the world in Waino, you just hate to have to be on the edge all the time.” Edinson Volquez (1-2) gave up six runs in 5 2-3 innings for Pittsburgh, which has dropped five of six. His day unraveled after the Pirates appeal of a potential double-play ball was denied and first baseman Ike Davis foot was ruled off the bag in the sixth inning. Davis was on the dirt stretching for the relay and was adamant replay got it wrong, contending he had contact with the base for “at least a half-second” after gloving the relay from second baseman Neil Walker. “I knew I was on the bag. You can look at the video yourself and you would think I was on the bag, too,” Davis said after the game. “But I guess it wasnt a close enough view.” Craigs two-out bloop single made it 2-0 the next at-bat, his first RBI in eight games. Peralta followed with a three-run homer on a full count for a 5-0 lead that chased Volquez, whos 3-6 with a 5.66 ERA in 12 career starts against St. Louis. Manager Clint Hurdle said if the umpires had called it a double play, he didnt think Matheny would have prevailed in a challenge. “You saw how it changed the complexion of the game,” Hurdle said. "I dont think it does anything mentally, youvee got to play through it.dddddddddddd “Weve been playing through calls we didnt like for 128 years, so that part of it is not going to change.” Peralta also homered leading off the fifth, the Cardinals first since Craig on April 16 at Milwaukee. He has six homers, the most ever by a Cardinals shortstop in the opening month of the season and one more than Edgar Renteria hit in 2000. “The first one, I knew it was gone for sure,” Peralta said. “The second home run, I didnt know for sure if was gone. He threw me a pretty good change-up.” Wainwright (5-1) allowed three hits in eight scoreless innings and hasnt allowed a run in 25 consecutive innings. He stayed on turn after tweaking his right knee trying to cover first in his last start at New York and had seven strikeouts with two walks. Wainwrights only loss came April 6 at Pittsburgh when he allowed two runs in seven innings but lost 2-1 in another matchup with Volquez, with the win going to reliever Tony Watson. On Sunday, Wainwright retired nine straight before hitting Jose Tabata with a breaking ball with one out in the sixth. Pedro Alvarez singled with two outs, but Wainwright got Neil Walker on a called third strike. Hes the fourth St. Louis pitcher to win five games in the opening month, joining Darryl Kile (2000), Bob Tewksbury (1994) and John Denny (1977). “You cannot make a lot of mistakes,” Volquez said. “Hes unbelievable. Hes a superstar.” Matt Adams tripled off Jeanmar Gomez in the eighth and scored on Molinas sacrifice fly. OMAHA, Neb. - Terence “Bud” Crawford stopped Yuriorkis Gamboa in the ninth round Saturday night to successfully defend his WBO lightweight belt in a match of unbeatens. Crawford wobbled Gamboa with a left and knocked him down with another left earlier in the ninth, then connected with a right to the chin at the 2:53 mark, prompting referee Gino Rodriguez to call the fight. As Rodriguez waved his arms, Crawford ran to a neutral corner and jumped on the shoulders of co-manager Brian McIntyre. “I hurt him plenty of times,” Crawford said, “so when I hurt him the last time, I was looking to finish.” The 26-year-old Crawford (24-0, 17 knockouts) was fighting in his hometown for the first time as a professional, and more than 10,000 showed up at the CenturyLink Center, many of them chanting “Craw-ford! Craw-ford!” throughout. “I imagined everybody screaming, supporting me,” Crawford said. “It was everything I thought it was going to be.” It was his first title defence since his 12-round unanimous decision over Ricky Burns in Glasgow, Scotland, in March. He said he plans to move up to junior welterweight after this fight. The 32-year-old Cuban-born Gamboa (23-1, 16 knockouts), a 2004 Olympic champion, was fighting for the first time in a year. Crawford took control in the middle rounds. In the fifth, Crawford knocked down Gamboa with a left to the side of his head. Crawford staggered him just before the bell with a flurry of shots, bringing the crowd to its feet. The 5-foot-5 Gamboa, with a 5-inch reach disadvantage, had trouble working inside against Crawford. When Crawford moved in, Gamboa used his superior speed to duck under him. Crawford landed a right to Gamboas cheek in the second round. As the fighters went into a clinch, Gamboa put a couple quick rights to the back of Crawfords head, drawing a warning from the referee. Gamboa landed a couple stinging shots in the third, but that he never was able to hurt Crawford. “He caught me with a good shot in the ninth, at the beginning,” Crawford said. “It got my attention and buzzed me a little.” Omaha hadnt been site for a world championship fight since 1972, when Joe Frazier successfully defended his heavyweight title against Ron Stander, who was in the crowd Saturday night. In the co-main event, WBO No. 1-ranked middleweight Matt Korobov remained unbeaten with a unanimous decision over Jose Uzcatequi for that organizations intercontinental title. Korobov (24-0) landed a hard left to the previously unbeaten Uzcatequis nose in the first round, knocked him down twice in the fifth and put him on his knees with a body blow in the ninth. The 23-year-old Uzcatequi (22-1), who had stopped his previous five opponents, was in his first professional fight outside Mexico. In another fight, unbeaten Canadian Mikael Zewski stopped Prince Doku Jr. of Ghana in the third round of a scheduled 10-round bout for the NABF welterweight title. Axford (0-1) came in seeking his fifth save in as many chances. SAN ANTONIO — Ben Curtis is still ahead at the Texas Open, leaving him just one round from his first PGA Tour victory since 2006 in what has been his most humbling year as a pro. But a pack of mostly non-winners could make redemption difficult. Curtis finally made his first stumbles at the Texas Open — once holding up a group playing six holes back when hacking the ball into the neighbouring fairway was his only escape from under a tree — but his 1-over 73 was enough to stay atop the leaderboard at 9 under Saturday. Matt Every was grateful to end a long day in the same position where he started — three strokes behind the former British Open champion. Every shot a 73 after waking early to finish his suspended second round, but its his course-record 63 from Thursday that still has him in contention. Mayakoba winner John Huh (67), Seung-Yui Noh (68) and Charlie Wi (71) were five strokes back at 4 under. David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., shot a 71 to move into a tie for 42nd. Calgarys Stephen Ames carded a 73 and Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., finished the round with a 75. Aside from Huh, no one within five strokes of Curtis has won on the tour. Despite six years passing since his last victory, Curtis said he knows how to handle the final round: Simply worry about himself. “In the past when Ive played in these circumstances, thats what I did: I just focused on my game and if at the end of 18 holes its good enough to win, great,” Curtis said. “If not, I have to shake the guys hand that won and move forward.” The Texas Open is only the fourth PGA Tour stop this year for Curtis, whose tournament invitations are no longer a sure thing after his status plummeted near the bottom rungs of the tour. Curtis preserved his lead despite two double boogeys, including a wayward drive on the par-5 8th that left the 2003 British Open champion hitting twice from the adjacent fairway.dddddddddddd. Curtis said he and his caddie decided there was no other choice after his tee shot veered left and landed under a mesquite tree, surrounded by cactus and with no clear path back toward the hole. “We were joking that we were on the second hole for 50 minutes today,” Curtis said. Curtis has some history on his side: Since 2000, eight third-round leaders at the Texas Open have held on to win. Every called his round “scrappy” after he started the week with a course record at TPC San Antonio, where he showed up just two weeks removed from ditching his swing instructor and a new laid-back stance on practice — which sometimes means not practicing at all. He had three bogeys Saturday but was saved by a couple birdies, including a 10-footer set up by a dead-on tee shot on the par-3 3rd. “Overall, not bad,” Every said. “I have a chance to win.” Matt Kuchar, the tournaments top-ranked player at No. 15, pulled back into contention with a 67 that was only marred by a bogey on the par-4 11th when the wind rolled his approach off the green to 21 feet on the fringe. “I put myself in position,” Kuchar said. “Maybe a long shot, but at least a chance.” Kuchar was tied for sixth at 3 under along with Greg Chalmers (69), Brian Gay (71), Cameron Tringale (76) and David Mathis (77). Mathis tumble was particularly swift. After starting the day two strokes off the lead, Mathis sank three birdies and walked to No. 15 in third place. But he bogeyed the hole and then made matters worse on the par-3 16th when his tee shot sailing into a crowded grandstand of ducking spectators. Leading the way in the early-season rankings is Sarnia Sting winger Nail Yakupov. After impressing with 101 points in 65 games en route to winning CHL Rookie of the Year honours in 2010-11, the highly-skilled Russian has already amassed seven goals and 18 assists in just 10 games with the Sting so far this season. Five of the remaining Top 10 prospects are defencemen including: Moose Jaws Moragn Rielly, Red Deers Matt Dumba, U.S. Under-18 defender Jacob Trouba, Windsors Nick Ebert and Peterboroughs Slater Koekkoek. Belleville centre Brendan Gance was the lone forward in the back half of the Top 10. Last October, Drummondville centre Sean Couturier was ranked number one by the ISS with eventual first-overall selection Ryan Nugent-Hopkins placing second. Couturier would later be selected eighth overall by Philadelphia. Although no official announcement has been made, the 2012 NHL Entry Draft is expected to be held in Pittsburgh June 22-24. CHICAGO — Eddie Lack got plenty of practice in his first NHL shootout. He also got a win. Ryan Kesler scored the deciding goal in an eight-round tiebreaker, leading Lack and the Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night. Kesler fired a high shot past Antti Raanta to help Vancouver end a two-game losing streak. Mike Santorelli was successful in the first round as the Canucks improved to 2-4 in shootouts. Patrick Sharp had Chicagos only shootout score against Lack in the third round. Lack, a rookie backup, said he got some advice from No. 1 goaltender Roberto Luongo and just tried to react. “When youre in it, you dont really think about it,” Lack said. “Its just like the AHL. Youre just focused on what youre going to do next, and anticipate it.” The Canucks were playing their second game in two nights and third in four overall. But it also was a good time for Vancouver to turn to Lack after Luongo gave up soft goals at critical times in the previous two games, both losses. Lack entered in the second period of Vancouvers 4-1 loss at Dallas on Thursday after Luongo allowed four goals on 19 shots. Lack made 24 saves against Chicago in his seventh start of the season and game No. 10 for his career. Then he stopped Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews in the shootout. Marian Hossa hit the post, and Lack poke-checked the puck away from Brandon Saad. “He stopped some world-class players there in Toews and Kane right off the bat, and that set us up for the win,” Kesler said. Vancouvers Daniel Sedin tied it at 2 with 9:12 left in the third period. Zack Kassian also scored for the Canucks, who trailed 2-0 after Kane set up Kris Versteegs score in the first, and then scored his team-leading 21st goal in the second. “We came in late last night, and usually the first 10-15 minutes, you try to survive,” Sedin said. “We did that, I thought we knew if we kept it close wed have a chance.” Kane has six goals and 14 assists during an 11-game point streak, helping him climb into second in the NHL scoring race behind Pittsburghs Sidney Crosby. He also has at least one point in 23 of his last 24 games. Raanta, also a rookie backup, had 22 stops in his sixth straight start since No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford suffered a lower-body injury on Dec. 8. The Canucks killed all four Chicago power plays to improve to 30 for their last 31 on the penalty kill. Vancouver, which entered with the NHLs best penalty-killing percentage, ended Chicagos string of power-play goals in 10 straight games. “I thought our power play might have let us down a little bit tonight,” Kane said. “We didnt really create any momentum off of it and they probably got momentum off them killing them off, so its something well try to improve on.” The Canucks had trouble clearing the puck early in the first and the Blackhawks took advantage. Versteeg opened the scoring at 7:49 on a deflection of Kanes shot from just inside the right point. Leveraging two power plays, the Canucks dominated early in the second and launched the first nine shots of the period. Raanta stopped them all during the flurry, including Sedins deflection from the slot. Kane then capitalized on Chicagos first chance in the period. Lack stopped Johnny Oduyas drive from left wing, but Kane jumped on the rebound. Kassian cut to 2-1 at 8:19 when he snapped off a shot from the right circle. It went between the legs of Chicago defenceman Brent Seabrook and past a screened Raanta. Santorelli had a chance to end the game in overtime but he hit the side of the net, just wide of the right post, after he broke in alone. NOTES: The Blackhawks recalled veteran G Jason LaBarbera from Rockford of the AHL. With Crawford still out, Chicago acquired LaBarbera from Edmonton last week. … Vancouver was without injured D Alex Edler (knee, eighth game) and D Ryan Stanton (ankle, second game). … Lack posted a shutout in his previous start, on Dec. 9 versus Carolina. I cant think of one reason to be excited for it.” The Sydney Morning Herald reported that organizers of the series at the Sydney Cricket Ground on March 22-23 demanded an explanation from the Dodgers and Major League Baseball. Officials from the club and MLB assured them Monday that Greinke was speaking for only himself and not the entire team, according to the newspaper. Greinke hasnt talked to other media about the comments. He told ESPNLosAngeles he understood the reason for the trip. “Its a baseball thing,” he was quoted as saying. “Its an ownership thing, spreading stuff around. Thats what its for, and its for the greater good of baseball.” Dodgers President Stan Kasten said Greinkes comments were rooted in his detailed approach to spring training and his meticulous adherence to routine. Both habits, Kasten said, make him a good pitcher and great teammate. Greinkes teammates say they are looking forward to the trip. “Itll be fun to see what Sydney has to offer,” first baseman Adrian Gonzalez said. The trip is scheduled to start with a flight of about 16 hours from Phoenix after an exhibition against Colorado on March 16. The Dodgers are scheduled to return to Los Angeles on March 23 and play three exhibition games against the Los Angeles Angels before playing in MLBs North American opener at San Diego on March 30. “Its a long trip for us,” said projected starter Dan Haren, who has a dressing stall next to GGreinkes in the Dodgers spring training clubhouse.dddddddddddd “But we have to think of the game. The actual trip will be a lot to handle, especially for the starting pitchers.” Arizona and the Dodgers opened their training camps about a week before the other 28 big league clubs. “This is not a normal spring for us,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Tuesday. Because of the trip, the Dodgers are scheduled for about half of their usual total of spring training games. And they may alter their rotation. While two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw and Greinke are their top two starters, Mattingly might not want them to get that many innings early with starts in both Australia and San Diego. Kershaw in theory could line up to start the season opener, the North American opener and the Dodgers home opener against San Francisco on April 4. Mattingly said he wont start Kershaw in all three. “Ill pitch when they tell me to,” said Kershaw, who is scheduled to start Wednesdays exhibition opener against Arizona in Scottsdale. Mattingly said 10 days ago he will monitor the workload of Kershaw, who agreed last month to a $215 million, seven-year contract, the largest deal for a pitcher. Kershaw pitched a career-high 259 1-3 innings last season, including the playoffs Mattingly does say Josh Beckett wont make the trip. Beckett is fighting to re-claim his spot in the starting rotation after surgery in July to alleviate a nerve problem that affected his right hand. He had a rib and muscle tissue removed. “Im hoping were going to feel a sense of urgency, make sure our minds are right,” Mattingly said. "Its not like were starting tomorrow and we have 37 spring games to play. “Weve got 19 games and then a game that counts.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

TORONTO — Understandably, Ryan Nelsen is torn about Jermain Defoe and the World Cup. Talk to the Toronto FC manager and he lists off the reasons why his star striker should go to Brazil. But he better than anyone knows that Englands gain would be his loss. “Look, for Toronto FC Id love him to stay obviously, because hes a quality player,” said Nelsen, who captained New Zealand at the 2010 World Cup. “But for Jermain, if I was the England manager, I probably would pick him. Because you know what youre going to get with him — you absolutely know what youre going to get with him.” Defoe, who played at the 2010 World Cup, offers England experience and a scoring touch off the bench. He has potted goals everywhere he has played — including 19 in 55 appearances for his country. The 31-year-old striker says he is in the dark, waiting for the phone to ring. “Its down to the manager,” said Defoe, referring to England boss Roy Hodgson. "He picks the squad. "Im sure he knows what every player can do. And even before he was the England manager, he probably knew all the players anyway. So Im sure that the manager knows his squad. And he probably knew his squad a long time ago — maybe just one or two additions that youre not sure about. “I dont know. Its up to the manager. As players, you just concentrate on playing for your club and then, like you said, you wait for the call.” Hodgson has apparently made up his mind. He is set to announce his 23-man squad Monday as well as seven standby players. “Ive known for a while,” he is quoted on Englands Football Association website. England will travel to Portugal on May 19 for a training camp that runs through May 23. The squad will reassemble May 27 with a friendly against Peru at Wembley on May. 20. The 23-man World Cup squad will be confirmed June 2. England has friendlies June 3 against Ecuador and June 7 against Honduras, both in Miami, before heading to Brazil for its World Cup opener June 14 against Italy. Realistically Defoe is hoping to land a spot as a reserve striker with Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck of Manchester United, Daniel Sturridge of Liverpool and perhaps Rickie Lambert of Southampton ahead in the pecking order. Given that, some argue that it would make more sense to take a younger player over Defoe. The argument there is that it would be an investment in the future. Nelsen sees the other side to that coin, suggesting his man has the seasoning and mental toughness to survive the England spotlight. “Probably the Brazil and the England national team are the hardest teams in world sport to play for, in terms of expectation and pressure,” he said. “You know Jermain can handle that. On the worlds biggest stage, you want to kind off knock out the variables. And I think Jermain does that.” “With my TFC hat on, I hope he doesnt (go). I hope he stays here,” Nelson added with a laugh. Barring injury, U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley and Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar will leave Toronto for the World Cup. Nelsen expects Cesar to leave his team after the May 23 game against Sporting Kansas City. “Jermain, if he does (go), (will be) roughly about the same time,” he added. “(U.S. manager Juergen Klinsmann) Juergen wants Michael now. Or tomorrow,” Nelsen said with a smile. “But were trying to hold that. I think for Michael, it will probably be the 19th or the 20th that we lose him.” The World Cup runs June 12 to July 13. Pro Bowl centre Maurkice Pouncey ripped up his right knee and linebacker Larry Foote ruptured his biceps during Pittsburghs 16-9 home loss to Tennessee, likely sidelining both players for the rest of the season. WASHINGTON — Well, thats a confounding sight at the top of the standings. The rebuilding, supposed-to-be-really-bad Philadelphia 76ers are 2-0, having followed their stunner over the Miami Heat with a win that left the Washington Wizards fans booing and their coach already questioning the players commitment. Thaddeus Young scored 29 points, rookie Michael Carter-Williams started cold and finished hot, and John Wall did just the opposite Friday night as the 76ers pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 109-102 victory. “Its only two,” first-year 76ers coach Brett Brown said, “but we sure are happy.” The 76ers are 2-0 for the first time since 2006-07, and they have done it by pushing the tempo and playing decent defence. They trailed by 12 points in the third quarter, but they shot 65 per cent over the final 12 minutes and finished with a staggering 74 points in the paint. Young scored 10 points in the fourth quarter. Evan Turner scored 23 points, and Spencer Hawes had 16 points and 14 rebounds. Carter-Williams finished 6 for 15 from the field after an 0-for-5 start and had 14 points and five assists. It was an inevitable climb-down from Carter-Williams stellar NBA debut when he had 22 points, 12 assists, nine steals and seven rebounds against the Heat. He overcame some early foul trouble to hit some big shots when the 76ers were making up ground on the Wizards in the third quarter. “How does a young guy respond?” Brown said. “You just keep seeing different ways where he doesnt get fazed by the moment.” The Wizards were as embarrassed as they could be. They are 0-2 for the fourth consecutive year, but this season has essentially been labeled as playoffs-or-bust by owner Ted Leonsis. Coach Randy Wittman, in the last season of his contract, answered only two questions at his postgame news conference and took 5 minutes to do so, using language not appropriate for live television. “Commitment to … playing defence. Thats what it is. … The thing they havent llearned, and I got to figure out a way,” Wittman said.dddddddddddd. “You could see it coming out of the locker room. Youve got to respect the game, your opponent. … Everything you get is No, were OK. Were not OK. Were 0-2. Were not OK.” Wall made his first seven shots and went 3 for 12 the rest of the way. He said he battled back spasms in the second half but should be fine for Sundays game at Miami. Trevor Ariza added 14 rebounds for the Wizards, who played without forward Nene (strained left calf). Marcin Gortat, acquired only a week ago in a trade, had 12 points and seven rebounds in his first start for Washington. Wall looked unstoppable in the first quarter when he reeled off 10 points in a 55-second span, beating his chest with his right fist and shouting at himself after making his second 3-pointer, but the Wizards couldnt hold a lead. Washington led by 12 after the first quarter but failed to get a field goal for nearly 6 minutes in the second. In the third quarter, a 12-point Wizards lead was wiped out in a matter of minutes, and the teams were tied at 74 entering the fourth. Carter-Williams 3-pointer with 6:28 remaining gave the 76ers their first lead of the game. They never trailed again, a team able to play with nothing to lose because everyone expects them to. “We have a lot of confidence in each other,” Carter-Williams said. “And not by any means are we going to go out there and play like we dont want to win. Theres a bunch of winners on this team.” NOTES: Philadelphia missed its first 10 attempts from 3-point range and finished 6 for 23 for the game. … The home opener failed to generate much buzz for a Wizards franchise that hasnt been to the playoffs since 2008. Wall addressed the crowd a few minutes before tipoff, saying “Yall are the best fans in the NBA” — to an arena that was less than half full. The announced attendance was 17,160. … The Wizards remain without No. 3 overall pick Otto Porter, who has a right hip flexor injury. SUGAR LAND, Texas – Former NBA star Tracy McGrady allowed two hits and two runs in 1 2-3 innings and took the loss in his debut for the Sugar Land Skeeters on Saturday night. The 34-year-old right-hander threw 35 pitches with 18 strikes and walked two in a 5-3 loss to the Somerset Patriots. NEW YORK, N.Y. – Carmelo Anthony “loves being a Knick” but is headed for free agency because he wants to explore his options, his agent says. Leon Rose also says that Anthony loves New York and its fans. The All-Star forward had a Monday deadline to terminate the final year of his contract and had informed the team he would do so. Anthony would have earned $23.3 million next season had he chose to play out the final year of his deal. Knicks president Phil Jackson had told Anthony it may be a good idea to consider that, but Anthony had repeatedly said his preference was to become a free agent this summer, and he told Jackson that during a recent meeting in Los Angeles. SAN FRANCISCO — Michael Morse and the San Francisco Giants reached agreement on a one-year, $6 million contract Thursday, and he is expected to be the teams starting left fielder. The deal is pending a physical, assistant general manager Bobby Evans said. Traded from Seattle to Baltimore on Aug. 30, Morse also can play first base and right field to give manager Bruce Bochy some flexibility in writing his lineup. If Morse becomes the everyday left fielder in place of Gregor Blanco, Bochy would have Blanco available coming off the bench, to fill in elsewhere or as a late-game defensive replacement. Morse missed time this past season with both a broken right pinkie and strained right quadriceps before returning from the disabled list in late July. The 31-year-old nine-year veteran, batted .215 with 13 home runs and 27 RBIs in 88 games between the Mariners and Orioles. He will fill a void at a position the Giants had been determined to upgrade this winter, though general manager Brian Sabean went into this weeks baseballl winter meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.dddddddddddd, uncertain of what he might be able to find to fill out his roster. Morse will be part of an outfield featuring Angel Pagan in centre field and Hunter Pence in right. Pagan received a $40 million, four-year contract last December, while Pence was rewarded with a $90 million, five-year contract before the season ended. He played every game this year. San Francisco already has had a productive off-season. The Giants missed the playoffs one year after winning their second World Series championship in three years, and Sabean worked to keep his pitching staff intact. Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong finalized a $5 million, one-year contract last week to re-join a rotation featuring newcomer Tim Hudson, recently re-signed two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, lefty Madison Bumgarner and right-hander Matt Cain. The Giants also re-signed left-handed reliever Javier Lopez to a $13 million, three-year contract last month. PARIS – Michel Platini thinks FIFA must hold another vote for the 2022 World Cup if corruption allegations against Qatars winning bid are proven. The UEFA president told sports newspaper LEquipe that he doesnt regret his own vote for Qatar and still thinks the Gulf nation “was the right choice for FIFA and for world football.” “But if instances of corruption are proved, there will need to be a new vote and sanctions,” Platini said. A FIFA prosecutor plans by next week to wrap up his investigation of the 2010 votes for Qatar and 2018 World Cup host Russia. On a personal note, Platini claimed that “somebody, something” is plotting to discredit his possible candidacy for the FIFA presidency. Media reports this week cast doubts on Platinis links to now disgraced Qatari official Mohamed bin Hammam. Londons Daily Telegraph alleged Platini had “a secret meeting” before the 2010 vote with Bin Hammam, suspected of vote-buying and other irregularities and whom FIFA subsequently expelled in 2012. Platini told LEquipe it was simply breakfast with a work colleague. Bin Hammam, like Platini, was a member of the FIFA board. “I read Platini corrupt? in all the newspapers, on news agency wires, on blogs. Honestly, it hurts,” Platini said. He added: “I saw this colleague 10,000 times in 15 years. Why would I have had a secret meeting with him? I now realize that in the background there is somebody, something, people organizing all this. I can feel it.” “For a year now, everything is being done to discredit me, regardless of what I do. It is easy to feed people who spend their time denigrating you on social networks. There are firms that specialize in this. Its not hard, you simply have to pay.” Platini stopped short of accusing FIFA and its president Sepp Blatter of involvement. “I have no proof,” he said. “I dont know who is behind all this. But I think lots of interests are at stake, for those at FIFA, for those who want to be there” and “without doubt also for those who want us to overturn the attribution of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.” Platini said, however, that none of this will influence his decision on whether to challenge Blatter for the FIFA presidency. Platini said he will announce in August, after the World Cup in Brazil, whether he will run in the May 2015 election. Blatter is looking to next weeks FIFA congress to support his own ambitions for another four-year term. wholesale nfl jerseys . It was the perfect bounce-back game for the Bulldogs, (24-6, 14-3 WCC), who will head into the conference tournament as the top seed for the 11th time in coach Mark Fews 15 seasons. Gonzaga had lost back-to-back games to BYU and San Diego and fell out of the Top 25 before blowing out the Tigers in their first visit to the Northern California campus in more than 35 years. The Bulldogs led by as much as 23 despite a slow night from leading scorer Sam Dower Jr. and got enough scoring off the bench to make up for the slack. T.J. Wallace had nine points and four rebounds for Pacific (14-14, 5-12). The Bulldogs led nearly the entire game and had no problem putting away the Tigers in their first visit to the Pacific campus since Dec. 23, 1976. That took Gonzaga out of a must-win situation heading into Saturdays regular-season finale at St. Marys. Pangos, held to 17 points combined in the losses to BYU and San Diego, had 15 points in the first half, and the Holland Landing, Ont., native repeatedly sped past Pacifics defence for easy buckets. He had nine points as part of a 13-0 run when Gonzaga took the lead for good, then helped keep the Bulldogs comfortably ahead in the second half. TThat helped offset a slow night from 7-foot-1 centre Przemek Karnowski.dddddddddddd Karnowski spent much of the first half on the bench in foul trouble and injured his right foot six minutes into the second half. Gonzagas big man returned and finished with nine points and nine rebounds. Dower Jr., the Bulldogs leading scorer, was also slowed by fouls and had just six points. Gonzaga had no problem picking up the defensive slack and forced 16 turnovers — 10 in the first half — and got a big lift from Barham off the bench. Barham made four 3-pointers to keep the Bulldogs rolling. He scored eight consecutive points to push the Bulldogs lead to 64-43 in the second half. Pacific, which matched its longest losing streak of the season at four, couldnt keep up. Playing before their largest crowd since 2005, the Tigers got off to a sluggish start then briefly took the lead midway through the first half before losing to Gonzaga for the fifth time in six meetings between the two schools. It marked the fourth straight game Pacific has been held under 60 points. Gonzaga held Pacific scoreless for the first five minutes but led only 12-11 after Karnowski picked up his second foul midway through the first half. Pangos scored on three quick layups and made a trio of free throws as part of a 13-0 run that put Gonzaga up for good. He later added a pair of threes that helped the Bulldogs go up 40-28 at halftime. TORONTO – Forgive Max Pentecost if his attentions divided this weekend. The Blue Jays second pick in the first round (11th overall) is competing in this weekends NCAA super regional for his school, Kennesaw State, against the Louisville Cardinals. All the while, he could be days or weeks away from signing a multi-million dollar contract to turn professional and enter Torontos organization. Pentecosts Owls were down a game in a best-of-three heading into action on Saturday night. Hes got business to take care of first but with a draft slot value at just under $2.9-million, the potential is there to strike it rich. Still, when you hear him speak in his southern drawl, its a reminder that the 21-year-old, like everyone his age, is in many ways still a kid. “I cant wait to get out there and go play,” said Pentecost. “Theres going to be one day where Im going to have to clean out my locker and putter around home just because my parents had to move me out of my apartment while we were coming to the super regionals.” Selected in the seventh round of the 2011 draft by the Texas Rangers, Pentecost chose not to sign when the Rangers included a 90-day clause in the contract offer, a shield against a recurring injury he suffered in high school. In Pentecosts sophomore year at Winder-Barrow High School near Atlanta, he suffered a stress fracture of his olecranon, which is the bony point of the elbow. He was prescribed rest and rehabilitation. It didnt work and the injury recurred during his junior year. Another season of rest and rehab didnt work and Pentecost suffered the injury a third time in his senior year. He had surgery, two screws were implanted, and there hasnt been an issue since. “I looked at it as I can go to college, work on a degree and if anything I can show them I can play three or four years without the injury recurring,” said Pentecost. “I can play healthy and thankfully I was blessed enough to have a good career and improve my stock.” His faith in himself has been rewarded. Pentecost has improved as a hitter in each of his three years at Kennesaw State, working a slash line of .423/.483/.631 this season. “I feel that Im more of a hit for average, Im more of a gap to gap, line drive kind of guy,” said Pentecost. “I have power but Im not known as a power hitter. You know, it just kind of happens. I feel like I have pretty decent speed for baserunning, for stealing bags. I usually have a pretty good approach, hit offspeed well.”Growing up in Georgia, Pentecost admitted he doesnt know much about the city of Toronto. He joked about his time in the Cape Cod League, the collegiate summer circuit in Massachusetts, where he picked up French-language radio stations beaming out of Quebec. It was his time in “The Cape,” as its known, when he hit .346/.424/.538 with seven home runs for the Bourne Braves, that Pentecost feels he made his name. “I think thats the only reason I am where I am today,” said Pentecost. “Going up there, nobody really knew who I was or had never even heard of Kennesaw State. So going up there I felt like I was really going to have to prove myself and prove my game just to prove who I am. I made a lot of changes to my game, really played hard, enjoyed it. The overall experience was, I mean, it was just a blast.” Pentecost cites Jason Kendall and, more recently, Buster Posey as players hes looked up to. He considers himself a versatile athlete; if the catching thing doesnt work out, he could play a corner infield position or in the outfield. First things first, Pentecosts got a game to win on Saturday night. Hell worry about becoming a millionaire later, although getting the draft out of the way will help him relax. “Its a huge weight off my shoulders,” he said. SANTOS UPDATE Sergio Santos will throw a bullpen session in Toronto on Sunday. If all goes well, hell report to Single-A Dunedin on Monday. The plan, Santos says, is to throw an inning each on Tuesday and Thursday. Hes hopeful of being activated off the disabled list late next week and of meeting the team in Baltimore. The first overall pick from 2012 added that head coach Dallas Eakins doesnt trust him and something needs to be done.Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos continued towards his potential return on Friday, taking part in practice drills with light contact. While the 23-year-olds progress had some teammates saying he was looking pretty good, Stamkos offered a more tempered approach to his return. “I dont feel where I need to be in order to play a game yet, but its getting there,” he told reporters after practice at the Bell Centre in Montreal. “Its nice to hear that the guys are saying that. Today I was in the corners a little more and getting bumped around (but) by no means was it full contact.” Stamkos fractured the tibia in his right leg in a Nov. 11 game against the Boston Bruins and underwent surgery the following day. He returned to practice earlier than expected, leading each days progress to be closely monitored by Lightning fans as well as Canadians. Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman named Stamkos to Canadas 25-man roster for the coming Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, but with Canadas first game just two weeks away, the clock is ticking on his hopes to be healthy in time. “You just have to listen to your body,” Stamkos said. "Were talking a lot about the Olympics and my goal is to try to be ready for those Games, but your body doesnt lie. If youre doing certainn movements and you feel pain then thats an indicator that maybe its not quite ready.dddddddddddd. “It is tough mentally as well, going in there knowing that youre a little hesitant in certain areas. Ive said that before that thats what you dont want so you just try to overcome that as you progress and you take more contact in practice and hopefully that goes away.” Stamkos scored 14 goals and 23 points in 17 for the Lightning this season prior to his injury. However, opportunities to get into game action before the Olympics are dwindling for the sniper. The Lightning have four games remaining before the NHL goes on break for the Games with the teams final game coming Feb. 8 against the Detroit Red Wings. While the Brampton, Ontario native wouldnt commit to a timeline, he acknowledged his progress thus far and expressed hope for it to continue over the next two weeks. “It has gotten better,” he said. "Theres less and less pain every time I get on the ice but there is still a little discomfort. “Im hoping in the next week and a half, two weeks, that that feels a lot better and I can do certain movements without having that pain or at least with some pain thats manageable. Right now its still a little sharp in certain areas so thats what Im trying to improve.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – New York Jets cornerback Dee Milliner sat out practice Wednesday with tightness in his left hamstring, and is not sure when he will return to the field. The practice, the teams fifth organized team activity session, was the first Milliner has missed this off-season after experiencing symptoms earlier in the week. “Its just precautionary,” Milliner said. “I feel fine.” Milliner, in his second season, had a rough start to his rookie year while dealing with hamstring issues early. He is expected to take over this season for Antonio Cromartie as the teams No. 1 cornerback, making this latest injury — however minor — cause at least some concern for the Jets. “He has to understand that hes got to be in extraordinary shape,” coach Rex Ryan said. “His challenge will be to be in world-class shape because weve got to have you out there. He needs to be out there and he needs to get work, because thats how hes going get better.” Ryan said Milliner, the No. 9 overall pick last year, had been having a good off-season before this setback. The coach was encouraged by Milliners progress last season, particularly in the final month. “You saw it as the year went on last year, he got better because of the work on the practice field and in the classroom,” Ryan said. “He was taking off from there, and you dont want to see this happen. Hes got to step it up, because I think hes got all the talent in the world.” Milliner, who stood on the sideline during team drills, acknowledged that theres a bit of frustration not being able to participate. “It bothers me because I want to be out there on the field with my teammates getting better during OTAs,” he said. “In another way, its fine because I know (Im not) injured or hurt that bad.” Wide receiver Eric Decker also was among those who did not participate. He is in Nashville with wife and recording artist Jessie James for the CMT Music Awards, at which they will be presenters. Ryan had no issue with the teams top receiver not being at the voluntary workouts. “Well, speaking as a married guy, (I) absolutely recommend that you would go to that,” a smiling Ryan said. “So that would be recommended, I think. You know, you ask for their support, you need to support them, too.” Meanwhile, running back Mike Goodson, coming off a knee injury and facing legal troubles, has yet to show for any of the teams OTAs. Ryan again stressed that the practice sessions are voluntary, but added: “He volunteered not to be here, and Ill volunteer to not answer the question.” Goodson roster status is in serious doubt, aside from facing weapons charges. The Jets also have Chris Ivory, Chris Johnson, Bilal Powell, Alex Green and Daryl Richardson at the position. And, the team isnt quite certain how much Goodson has been able to do in his rehabilitation from the injury. “Im not going to speculate because hes not here and I dont know where he is,” Ryan said about Goodsons rehab. “We havent seen him, so I cant answer that question.” . The New York Rangers returned home Sunday with a bad taste in their mouth. Unable to hold a two-goal lead on three occasions in their 5-4 overtime loss to the Kings, the Rangers had plenty to rue in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final at Staples Center on Saturday night. But they were especially upset at a non-call early in the third period when Dwight King scored to pull the Kings to within one at 4-3. As Justin Williams moved the puck to Matt Greene at the point, the six-foot-four 230-pound King headed to goal as he had done all night. Rangers defenceman Ryan McDonagh engaged him at the top of the blue paint and soon King, McDonagh and goalie Henrik Lundqvist were tangled together like a three-headed octopus. King somehow managed to tip Greenes shot from the point as Lundqvist was unable to move. Marian Gaborik scored 5:38 later to tie it at 4-4 and Dustin Browns tip-in of a Willie Mitchell shot ended the drama at 10:26 of double overtime. On the wrong end of two overtime contests, the Rangers trail two games to none going into Game 3 Monday at Madison Square Garden. Asked it was goalie interference on the King goal, a tight-lipped Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said: “Ask the NHL.” Goalie interference is not reviewable under the current rules. Lundqvist was clearly unhappy, throwing his arms up in disbelief after the goal as he was pinned under King and McDonagh. He talked to the referee during a TV timeout soon after, seeking an explanation. Lundqvist said after the game that he just wanted consistency, pointing to a goalie interference penalty to Rangers forward Benoit Pouliot in the second period. “If they dont call that, you cant call that they called in the second period,” said Lundqvist, who thought Pouliot had been pushed into Jonathan Quick. “We have the same play and they score. Like I said, I dont think its a penalty but youve got to stop the play if the goalie cant move in his crease. And its not like Im outside the crease. I play pretty deep. Just be consistent with it.” Kings forward Jeff Carter was called for goalie interference in the first overtime period, after contact with Lundqvist that left the New York goaltender taking his time to get his equilibrium back. Still Rangers forward Derek Stepan also didnt like what he saw on the King goal. “I dont really want to get myself worked up right now,” he said. “From my point of view, I think that their (Kings) goal shouldnt have even happened. But Im not the one making the calls, Im the one playing. Im not the one that saw what he saw and we go from there.” King was a thorn in the Rangers side all night, screening Lundqvist on Willie Mitchells second-period goal. Vigneault tried to look at the positives. “Both games we had opportunities,” he said. "We didnt get it done. Were going home in front of our great fans. Were going to be ready for the next game. " The non-call was just one of many talking points. Like the Kings, the Rangers were punished for mistakes. And they had chances to score, with Jonathan Quick stopping Brad Richards at point-blank range in the third and Chris Kreider hitting the post in overtime. Lundqvist pointed to the razor-edge margin in the first two games. “Its just one bounce here and there and its a different score. We came up short in two games. Now we have to go home to New York and turn this around.” Stepan said the goal for New York was simple. “Just relax and play. Weve got to make sure we take care of ourselves, get home and get that Garden rocking.” Los Angeles was judged to have yielded 33 giveaways Saturday, to 15 from New York. Thats 51 giveaways from LA in two games, compared to 25 for the Rangers. Kings centre Anze Kopitar is expecting a Rangers pushback at Madison Square Garden. “We can play better hockey. And weve done it before. Everybody knows that were going to have to do it at MSG because their building is going to be loud,” Kopitar said. “Im sure theyre going to be very desperate. Theyre going to throw everything at us that theyve got and were going to have to match all of the above.” The Rangers loss came despite leading 4-2 after 40 minutes. That snapped their 10-0 record when leading after two periods this post-season. Forty-eight teams have taken a 2-0 series lead since the Stanley Cup final went to the best-of-seven format in 1939. Of those clubs, 43 (89.9 per cent) have gone on to win the Cup, including the 2012 Kings. Home teams sweeping Games 1 and 2 of the Cup final have gone 32-3 (.914 per cent). But two of the exceptions were recent with Pittsburgh (2009 against Detroit) and Boston (2011 against Vancouver) rallying to win the Cup. ANAHEIM – It was one of the funnier moments in this years Stanley Cup playoffs. Anaheim Ducks winger Corey Perry squirted water into one of Jeff Carters hockey gloves, which was left on top of the boards by the Kings bench, unattended, during a commercial break. The Los Angeles Kings centre appeared unamused and voiced displeasure to a nearby linesman. “Just trying to, I guess, get under peoples skin,” said Perry with a shrug when asked about the prank he pulled in Game 1 of the series. “Just try to get people off their game.” But so far in the first-ever playoff showdown between the NHLs two southern California teams it has been the Kings, who have gotten the Ducks off their game as Perry, a 43-goal scorer in the regular season, and Hart Trophy nominee Ryan Getzlaf have failed to make a major impact. “Him and I put a lot of pressure on each other and on ourselves and its our responsibility to get the team going, to produce and we havent done that,” Perry admitted. So far it has been the Kings top line featuring Selke Trophy nominee Anze Kopitar, which has gotten the best of the Ducks dynamic duo. “In the playoffs you have to be better than the guy across from you,” Getzlaf said. “If hes playing great you got to be better than that. Thats how you find a way to win.” “If you know Ryan, he puts a lot of onus on himself,” said Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau, “and he knows hes the leader of this group and when hes going to his best [level] then we usually have a good result. He feels he needs to be a little bit better, hes probably correct.” Post-game on Monday, Getzlaf said he was “ticked off” by how the series has unfolded. And the Ducks captain made it clear on Tuesday that the anger he felt in the moments after the loss has yet to subside. “Yeah, Im still mad. I want to win and when we dont win I get mad. Thats just [my] nature I guess.” And while Getzlaf believes he can be better he certainly doesnt shoulder all the blame for the bind his team is in. “Its not all about me. Im not going to go out and win Game 3 by myself thats for sure. The story of our season has been our depth and our lineup and we need, from top to bottom, everybody pushing.” The Kopitar line, which also features captain Dustin Brown and sniper Marian Gaborik, is likely to be matched up against the Getzlaf unit over the next two games as Kings head coach Darryl Sutter will have the advantage of last change at the Staples Center. But Anaheims lack of success isnt about one matchup. The Kings have tightened up all over the ice and are playing the same suffocating style that led to a Cup two years ago. “They didnt win the Jennings Trophy just by luck,” said Boudreau. “Theyre a good defensive team.” The Kings allowed the fewest goals in the NHL in the regular season (2.05 goals per game). Los Angeles also led the league in hits. “The system [they play] is really basic,” Boudreau explained. "Theres nothing really extravagant with what Darryls doing. They just do it well. They got the right personnel, theyve been through the wars, theyve won the Cup before with that group and they know how to do it. “Quite frankly, its the same system we use. Its layers of blocking, layers of having to go through guys when you come into [their] zone and the last six games theyve been very good at it.” Cracking the Kings sound defensive structure is one issue, but the bigger issue for the Ducks has been Jonathan Quick, who has reverted to his Conn Smythe form after a shaky start in the first round series against the San Jose Sharks. Quick has a .961 save percentage during the Kings current six game winning streak. “Yeah, hes played well, but we havent played our game,” said Perry. “We just have to be more determined.” Quick turned aside 36 of the 37 shots he faced on Monday night with the only puck to beat him deflecting in off defenceman Jake Muzzins skate. “Hes seeing a lot of pucks,” said Ducks forward Patrick Maroon, who was credited with Anaheims lone goal in Game 2, which came during a four-on-three power play. “Thats one of the problems here. Five-on-five we got to get in front of the net, get in his eyes, create more traffic and get in his head a little bit, because were not doing that. Were an outside team right now. We got to crash and bang, throw pucks at his feet and go to the net.” Jonas Hiller, who faced just 16 shots Monday night, suggests Anaheims current approach is actually helping Quick build even more confidence. “I know from experience that those are the nice games to play if you face a lot of shots and are able to see most of them,” said the Ducks goalie. “Quicks just playing a little better than I am right now. I think their first line is just a little bit better than our [top] line. We got to find a way to change that.” Scoring goals wasnt a problem for the Ducks during the regular season as they led the NHL in that category (3.21 per game). Perry finished second in the league in goal scoring behind only Alexander Ovechkin while Getzlaf posted a career-high 31 goals. Ten Ducks had 10 goals or more. So why has the potent Anaheim attack, become so punchless? It appears the challenge at the moment is more mental than physical. “I think guys are almost trying to do too much, myself included, trying maybe to push it a little too hard and making it unnatural,” said Matt Beleskey, who has two goals and two assists in four playoff games this spring while skating alongside Perry and Getzlaf. “The Kings are doing a pretty good job of boxing guys out, but its timing. You got to bear down and get there.” Dropping the first two games at home can shake the confidence of a team. But Boudreau downplayed the importance of home-ice advantage. He pointed out that the games between the Kings and Ducks have been close all season whether theyre played at the Honda Center, Staples Center or even Dodger Stadium. “To me, these games whether we play them here or frigging any stadium you want, its going to be a tough game or a one-goal game and its two teams just battling really hard,” Boudreau said. “The difference is they scored an empty-net goal and we didnt. Thats the whole difference in the series right now.” Anaheim will need to win on enemy ice at least twice to keep their season alive. The Kings only have one regulation loss at the Staples Center in their last nine games there, but the Ducks dont see this as a daunting task. “Its tough to win in this building too and they did it twice,” said Beleskey standing in the Ducks dressing room. “Definitely not going to be that hard for us.” The Ducks believe one win can turn this series on its head. After all, the Kings stormed back against the Sharks in the first round. The Chicago Blackhawks erased an 0-2 deficit against the St. Louis Blues. Comebacks are all the rage in the NHL these days. “Were a confident group,” said Ducks defenceman Ben Lovejoy. "We know we can beat this team. We feel weve had two pretty even games … I truly believe that playoffs is all about momentum and right now we need to put a seed of doubt in their mind. And if we win that first game, if its 2-1 and we have momentum, we can do that. “As soon as we win one they remember that were a good team, we remember that were a good team and it puts doubt in their mind, but it all starts with us.” . Another is a bunch of groundballs. Finally, theres a game that lasts two hours six minutes. Pavano kept up his recent surge with an efficient six-hitter for the Twins in a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. . A Swiss Federal Tribunal ruling published Friday said that FIFAs disputes panel and the Court of Arbitration for Sport correctly imposed the sanction for Nantes enticing Guinea forward Ismael Bangoura to break his contract with Dubai club Al Nasr in January 2012. http://www.wildjerseyshockeyproshop.com/Niklas-…. Kyrie Irving scored 22 points and the Cavaliers won their sixth straight game, 101-93 over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. . And the Ottawa Redblacks linebacker wanted to be sure his words delivered their full effect. “Its an insult,” he said over the phone Wednesday after the CFL Players Association lifted its media ban, giving its members the ability to speak openly about stalling collective bargaining talks. . T.J. Brodie scored at 2:26 of the extra session to lead Flames to a 5-4 win over the slumping Blackhawks, whose overtime record fell to 0-6 this season. You never forget your first. It is what you judge all others against. It may not have been the best World Cup but it was yours. Your own personal experience with the greatest sporting event the world can offer you. A World Cup stays with you. As time drifts away from each one the immediacies of every day life tend to fade some of the memories away and recent tournaments, unless it was your first, have simply not matched up to the emotions your first romance with the World Cup generated. World Cups of recent memory have all been special in their own way, bringing together a carnival of the sport for a month, but they left many of us wanting more; giving us far too few moments of real greatness. And then there was this one. If it was your first, you have no idea how fortunate you are. The 2014 version returned to the home of the Carnival. It arrived in Brazil desperate to be a good World Cup again. It departs as a truly fantastic World Cup. Brazil 2014 laughed in the face of hyperbole. While World Cups of recent memory needed false statements of grander to gain attention, this one allowed for the use of exaggeration and, in some aspects, desperately needed it to convey just how important the evidence on show was. As your first World Cup showed, how we all experience this tournament is truly a personal adventure, but no World Cup in recent memory will have been enjoyed by so many people. There is a good chance it was the greatest ever; featuring the most remarkable result in the 84-year history of the tournament. Group Stage Day two. Game three. Almost half-time. The run. The pass. Oh the pass. To understand why Andres Iniesta arrived home in Spain on Day 13 of the World Cup, when half of the teams hadnt even completed their group games, we must go back to the pass. The midfield mastermind didnt look, he didnt need to. It was close to 445pm local time in Salvador when the Barcelona man slipped countryman David Silva through with one of the passes of the tournament. Spain, in complete control of their first match and already ahead by a goal, were about to double their lead. Except thats not what happened. Silva couldnt score and within a minute one of the greatest World Cup goals youll ever see took place, as Robin Van Persie became the new flying Dutchman, heading brilliantly over Iker Casillas. Suddenly a very thick, direct line between the last World Cup and this one could no longer be drawn. Spain never recovered and became the third World Champion in the last four World Cups to leave after their group games ended. (The Canadian Press) The tone was set. Games changed drastically in second halves, there were goals galore, many of them scored by headers, often caused by counter-attacks, and when the dust settled, with half of the teams eliminated, over a fabulous 21-day period, we had witnessed the greatest World Cup group stage ever. It was a World Cup where the minnows of Costa Rica won a group featuring three former World Champions, where previously dysfunctional teams like Mexico and France excelled and Europes major players like Italy, England, Portugal and Russia joined Spain on a flight home. It was a group stage of surprises, where tactically versatile and organized sides shocked the so-called super powers of the game. A group stage that saw the renaissance of 3-5-2, used so well by surprise teams like Netherlands, Costa Rica and Mexico. A group stage of headers, with 27 more following Van Persies belter from another brilliant pass, this time by the best left back in the tournament, Daley Blind. (The Canadian Press) A group stage of comebacks. Spain, massacred by the Dutch 5-1 in the third game of the tournament, was already the second team, after Croatia a day earlier, to lose a game they led. A small, exclusive group of only four from 2010 was dwarfed as Uruguay, Japan, Ecuador, Algeria and Australia joined them in the first week. During their second group games Germany, Ghana, Portugal and USA all managed to not win games against each other that they led in. The reigning world player of the year, Cristiano Ronaldo, didnt have much of a say on this World Cup, due to injuries and ineffective team-mates, but he did produce a pass, as good as Iniesta and Blind, that landed on the head of Silvestre Varela in the final seconds of their dramatic game against the United States. It was just another moment at this World Cup you wanted to watch on repeat with Avicii on in the background. Brazil 2014 was a party that was alive and kicking, exhilarating, heartbreaking and magnificent every single day. Even Uruguay, Greece and Algeria had comebacks of their own, all qualifying for the last 16 despite losing their opening World Cup match. Only Spain did that in 2010. Any mention of Uruguay, of course, brings back memories of another biting incident by Luis Suarez, with this time Italys Giorgio Chiellini becoming his victim. That FIFA acted swiftly to ban him should be commended. That Uruguays captain and manager backed him and used it as a rallying cry against English speaking journalists was a real pity. That we had a World Cup of many terrific moments is a relief. Yes, it will always be apart of what happened at this World Cup, but anyone who thinks of this World Cup and thinks of the bite first is, likely, not as big of a fan of the sport than they think they are. (The Canadian Press) It became the group stage of counter-attacks, once again ignited by the Dutch over Spain as they scored their last three goals with a combined 29 seconds in possession, and never more highlighted than when Switzerland broke away in the final seconds to score a dramatic, crucial winner over Ecuador. It became the group stage of creative, left-footed masters like Lionel Messi, Arjen Robben and the sensational James Rodriguez who all glided across the field into space left open by a transition and produced some wonderful moments. It was the group stage of substitute goals, 24 in total, highlighted by Miroslav Klose joining the great Ronaldo on 15 World Cup goals and, of course, James Rodriguez dancing his way through the Japanese defence for one of the goals of the tournament. In the end, though, it was the group stage of goals as an incredible 136 went in. Just nine fewer than the entire 2010 tournament combined. Group Winners – Brazil, Netherlands, Colombia, Costa Rica, France, Argentina, Germany, Belgium For the third time in the last four World Cups, three teams that were not seeded won groups. For the second successive World Cup, the only seed that didnt progress through to the next stage was the previous winners (Spain 2014, Italy 2010). Runners-up: Mexico, Chile, Greece, Uruguay, Switzerland, Nigeria, USA, Algeria. Teams eliminated in the group stage in reverse order based on performance in Brazil – 32. Honduras31. Cameroon30. It began with a party in Belo Horizonte between the hosts and Chile but by the second half of that match the tense nation had been drowned in nerves. They werent the only ones. Colombias brilliant dismantling of a poor Uruguay, featuring a gorgeous goal from James, aside, every game of the first knockout stage was close and gripping. Brazil and Costa Rica narrowly got through on penalties, Louis Van Gaals comeback kings did it again, this time scoring twice after the 88th minute to knock Mexico out, while France, Argentina and Germany all narrowly got past terrific displays by Nigeria, Switzerland and Algeria respectively. And so it was down to Belgium to try and ensure all eight group winners made it to the last eight for the first time. Salvador, the site of so many other superb matches, delivered once again with one of the finest extra time periods youll ever wish to see. The Americans, outplayed for much of the contest, were never beaten until the final whistle brought the curtain down on a pulsating act and history was made. The danger of a knock-out tournament is that teams, undeservedly, can go further than they should. This spectacular World Cup had no time for that either in Brazil. All four of the quarter-finals, played over two gripping days across the country, were all close but not one of the teams that went home should have felt any form of injustice. France, and their coach Didier Deschamps, had discovered a new identity as winners in Brazil, a likeable team that people back home could relate to but in the end, much like against Spain in Euro 2012, they were no match for a superior passing side as Germany eliminated them with another headed goal. Costa Rica defended brilliantly but were the second best team in the penalty shootout loss to Netherlands while Belgium were extremely ordinary against an ordinary Argentina who finally got someone other than Lionel Messi to step up in a big moment when Gonzalo Higuain, reacting on instinct, sent his team into the semis for the first time since 1990. The round, though, will be remembered for Brazils win over Colombia. Two goals from set-pieces were just about enough to get the hosts through and although James scored his tournament leading sixth goal it wasnt enough for Jose Pekermans side. Brazil were average again but their South American foes hadnt started playing until the last 15 minutes in what was a brutally physically match where the referee forgot about his duty to protect the players. Neymarr was the biggest casualty from the match, breaking a vertebrae in his back, but anyone who blamed the referee should have also been targeting Fernandinho and his own manager as they clearly played an enormous part in making it such a battle.dddddddddddd (The Canadian Press) Teams eliminated in the quarter finals in reverse order based on performance in Brazil – 8. As the tournament entered its final week all eyes remained on the so-called dream final. Argentina and Brazil, on opposite sides of the draw, had reached the last four together for the first time ever. A possible all South American final inside the Maracana still existed as the semi-finals kicked off. Twenty-five minutes later that dream was crushed. There he stood, wiping away the tears from beneath his glasses. A boy in a Brazil shirt, not old enough to have remembered any of the reasons for the five stars above the crest. When goal number four went in, the third in three minutes, it all became too much. He sobbed. He wasnt the only one. A nation that had drowned themselves in sorrow and self-pity since the Neymar injury were watching their national team get annihilated in a game they thought belonged to them. Germanys 7-1 demolition of Brazil was the most remarkable result in World Cup history. Toni Kroos, Sami Khedira, record breaker Klose and others were remarkably ruthless, and it was a clear sign that Germany had learned and become confident, from four years earlier, to press high and create transitions in the oppositions half. Nevertheless, this was a game where the hosts capitulated in Belo Horizonte. It began with David Luiz and Julio Cesar holding up the jersey of their injured striker Neymar as if he was dying. What a pity that was the strongest bit of emotion we saw from Brazil the entire game. Instead of FIFA recognizing the life of the wonderful Alfredo Di Stefano, who had died hours earlier, or the lives of two people who died from a bridge collapsing nearby, the Brazilian public got what they wanted. Luiz Felipe Scolari allowed the irrational emotions of the public to enter the dressing room and the result was Brazil were not mentally prepared to play a monumental match in front of their own people. Once they trailed in the game, they were finished. It was a massive missed opportunity and a striking example of how not to prepare for a tournament. Brazil would be best advised to read how New Zealands All Blacks ran through scenarios ahead of time if they lost their key number ten, Dan Carter, in the 2011 Rugby World Cup. When it happened, they were ready to withstand adversity. Brazil, like the bridge, tragically collapsed and it was without doubt one of the most astonishing games in the history of the sport, let alone the World Cup. Argentina completed their end of the bargain, progressing through a penalty shootout against the Dutch after a desperately drab affair in Sao Paolo. Semi-finalists placed in order of 3rd/4th place playoff – 4. Brazil 3. Netherlands. FINAL It was a spectacular final. Like all great sides, Germany again rose above the challenges and were worthy world champions. This time the challenges came thick and fast. Sami Khedira hurt in the warm up, Christophe Kramer, his replacement, taken off inside 30 minutes with a head injury, their left side exploited, Toni Kroos handing Gonzalo Higuain a golden moment to score and yet Germany were able to walk off at half-time still at 0-0. They went on to dominate the second half, playing their own way, with centre-backs Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng having standout performances, stepping up and getting tight on Lionel Messi when needed. Argentina got deeper as the game wore on but continued to defend brilliantly as a unit. Mesut Ozil, playing centrally, led the press, not close to as effectively as Toni Kroos has in the past but Ozil was far better than in any other game. Argentina were also much better than in past matches. Yet, it still remained 0-0. Germany were in control, led by the magnificent Bastian Schweinsteiger who was the best player on the pitch. All that lacked for Germany was an end product. Miroslav Klose had to play longer than needed, but when Mario Gotze came on the attacks were crisper. Still Argentina defended deep but, with just seven minutes away from penalties, Andre Schurrle dribbled the ball, Gotze made a run and the two substitutions combined to put Germany ahead. Fittingly, in a World Cup where 32 subs scored goals, the 171st and final goal of the World Cup went to a sub. Germany had done it. They were the deserved winners. Argentinas players, many in tears, stood and watched as the brilliant Philipp Lahm lifted the World Cup but as you looked at them there was only Javier Mascherano who truly played well enough to say he deserved to be a champion. The debate will rage on and on comparing Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, of course. What a pity. It was not a game, or a team, that got the best out of Messi, who clearly is not at the level he was at two years ago for Barcelona. In truth, he may never reach such an incredible high again but it is a real shame that this generation cannot appreciate watching him in a World Cup final, one Argentina wouldnt have been in without him, without comparing him to a player who played a sport that was vastly different to the one we watch today. Golden Boot Winner & Golden Ball Winner Lionel Messi won the official Golden Ball but James Rodriguez was the true champion. FIFA continues to get that decision wrong and we shouldnt overly obsess about their incompetence over an individual award in a team sport. (The Canadian Press) James Rodriguez. The only player in the tournament to score goals with his left foot, right foot and head, the man known as Hamiss should never be called Jayms ever again. The loss of Radamel Falcao was supposed to be a big one for Colombia but it allowed them to play with one striker, which gave the Monaco magician more of a central role to star. His World Cup was only five minutes old when he produced a stunning ball to Cuadrado from a deep-lying playmaker role. He followed it up with a run and dummy that allowed Pablo Armero to score. His corner led to goal number two against Greece and he scored the third. In game two he scored a brilliant header against Ivory Coast and then started a transition – pressing Didier Zokora – that led to the next goal. He played only one half against Japan, came on, set up two Jackson Martinez goals then produced a stunning chip for a sensational goal. In the next round, against Uruguay, he scored the goal of the tournament, then finished one on his right foot to make it 2-0 and take Colombia to the quarter finals for the first time. Against Brazil he scored from the penalty spot. Colombia scored 12 goals at the World Cup and he was directly involved in 11 of them. For the first time they played with an arrogant swagger in a World Cup and that was all because of James. Total Goals Scored in past 4 World Cups under this current format – 145 (2010) 147 (2006) 161 (2002) 171 (1998). Total Goals Scored in Brazil 2014 – 171 A sensational 31 of these goals were headers. Two years ago, the 2012 European Championships broke their record for the amount of headers with 22 and this was easily the most headed goals in any World Cup, a wonderful sign in an era that once could have been defined by the narrow shape of 4-2-3-1. Conclusion It was a great World Cup that waited sometime for greatness to emerge from a team. Germany did that in some style in the semi-finals and went on to show why they truly are a great team, winning their first World Cup since 1990. They become the first European team to win a World Cup in South America and considering their group, the location of their games in the intense heat of the north, and their defeats over Brazil and Argentina, this will go down as a true great champion. It is a victory that didnt come down to just one night, one week or, even, one month. We have to think of Vienna 2008, losing to a Spain side in the Euro final and getting a glimpse into what has to be done to be champions. We have to think of Durban 2010, where Spain again showed them the future and the level they had to get to. We have to think of Warsaw, where Italy denied them when they were again so close. And for a team so influenced by Bayern Munich, we have to think of the Champions League finals of 2012 and 2013, where many of these players learned, once again, what it was like to lose before winning it all. Subsequently, Germanys core players arrived in Brazil as true world class winners in the club game. They leave as World Champions. CALGARY – Players on both sides of the football look to either establish or re-establish themselves as impact players in the CFL when the Calgary Stampeders host the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday. Calgarys Bo Levi Mitchell and Montreals Troy Smith will be the starting quarterbacks in a CFL season-opener for the first time in their careers. Both want to reinforce their No. 1 status. You can watch the game live in the first half of a doubleheader on TSN and TSN GO at 3:00pm et/Noon pt. or listen to the game live on TSN Radio 690 Montreal. Former NFL star Chad Johnson will begin the revival of his football career as an Alouettes receiver. Prominent Stampeder receiver Nik Lewis is back after missing over half of last season with a broken leg. The 32-year-old slotback feels he has something to prove. The sentiment can also apply to Tom Higgins, who returns as a CFL head coach with Montreal after six years working as the leagues director of officiating. His last coaching stint was with the Stampeders from 2005 to 2007 and Calgarys record in his final season was 7-10-1. Its serendipitous his first game back will be at McMahon. “When you think about, why not?” Higgins said Friday. “I knew how to get here. The bus driver went the wrong way and I said no, no, you make a right here.” Theres also players still feeling out their new teams such as Josh Bell, a former Lion who will make his Stampeder debut at starting safety Saturday. “I want to see how we adjust really when we have success and when we dont have success,” Bell said. “How do we adjust? Thats the biggest thing in football.” The Stampeders topped the CFL with a 14-4 record last season, but were upset 35-13 at home in the West Division final by the eventual Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Montreal Alouettes went 8-10 and lost 19-16 in the East semifinal to Hamilton. Star quarterback Anthony Calvillo missed the final 10 games of the season with a concussion and subsequently retired in the off-season. Smith, a former Heisman Trophy winner with Ohio State, got a crash course in CFL football going 2-1 to conclude the season. “What you do know about Troy is he brings a level of leadership, he has a very strong arm and hopefully he has a cast around him that he doesnt have to carry the football team,” Higgins said. “If we do our job properly, hopefully we can spread that football around enough that he doesnt always feel he has to be on top of his game for us to win.” Mitchell won his three starts and came off the bench to win another in 2014. Stampeders coach and general manager John Hufnagel handed the 24-year-old the ball for the opener, but indicated he could have just as easily given it to Drew Tate. “It was a photo finish between he and Drew,” Hufnagel said. “I said earlier in the week when I made the decision both quarterbacks will play football for us this year. It just so happens Bo is getting the first start.” “He has earned the opportunity to play. Hes won every game hes played as a Calgary Stampeder, so thats not a bad track record.” Both Mitchell and Smith recognize opportunities to be a CFL starter are limited and they must perform to earn more. “Every game, every play, every snap, every rep is concreting or cementing who you are,” Smith said. Added Mitchell: “Now that Ive been given the job, Im going to make sure I keep it, run with it and have a lot of fun.” Lewis broke his fibula Aug. 17 and did not play again in 2013. It was the first time in a decade as a Stampeder he was unable to produce over 1,000 receiving yards. Lewis was annoyed Friday that hed been made a designated international for Saturday, which could limit the slotbacks playing time because he cant replace a Canadian on the field. “I dont make these decisions. I just play football,” Lewis said. "In this business, its what have you done lately. Last year, I wasnt able to play, so Ive got to continue to go out and get better and prove that I can play. “Ive never had an injury like I had last year, so I am so motivated to get back on the field and just show it is possible. Maybe Week 1, well unleash the beast.” Stampeder offensive lineman Dan Federkeil will sit out Saturdays game. He took a hit to the neck in practice this week and has had a concussion before. Hufnagel wants to be cautious with the Medicine Hat, Alta., native. So with internationals Stanley Bryant and Edwin Harrison both suiting up on the offensive line, Hufnagel said “it disrupted our ratio a little bit.” “I had to make one of our receivers the DI,” Hufnagel explained. “Nik will be the DI, but were still going to have three on the field and they all are going to have their roles. Its not like Nik wont be playing the game.” Lewis is considered one of the CFLs colourful, and at times controversial, players. Montreals Johnson could join him in that category. The six-time Pro Bowler and one-time “Dancing With the Stars” contestants Twitter posts often include “sensitive material” warnings. He changed surname to Ochocinco in 2008 only to return to Chad Johnson in 2012. He spent 10 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, but hasnt played a game since 2011. The 36-year-old wide receiver wasnt among the handful of Alouettes available to the media at McMahon on Friday. Smith indicated Johnson is still adjusting to the Canadian game. “Chads OK, man hes done great,” the quarterback said. "Hes accepting the different nuances of the game and tried to perfect them the best he could, but his backbone and his foundation will be guys like S.J. Green, guys like Duron Carter and guys like Brandon Whitaker who can give him the ins and outs . . . on things he can do during the game if hes not feeling too up to par with whats going on. “We have an incredible group of veteran guys who do nothing but help tremendously and Ive relied on them also.” . - Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin will have minor shoulder surgery soon to address a nagging injury he played with last season. . Pro Bowl centre Maurkice Pouncey ripped up his right knee and linebacker Larry Foote ruptured his biceps during Pittsburghs 16-9 home loss to Tennessee, likely sidelining both players for the rest of the season. http://www.nhlblackhawkshockeystore.com/red-29-…. Owens was roughed up in Torontos 20-9 defeat to Montreal on Tuesday, needing treatment twice after hurting his neck and taking a hard shot to the abdomen. In other news from Fridays practice, Jerious Norwood took most of the snaps at running back for Curtis Steele. Norwood also did some returning, although Milanovich said returns would likely be done by committee. . Reassurance came from Paul Tesori, his caddie and close friend whose newborn son is in intensive care in a Florida hospital. “Paul sent me a text this morning, just told me he loved me and wanted to go out and fight as hard as I would any other day,” Simpson said Sunday after doing just that. . — Last month, Richie Incognito said severe repercussions would be warranted if the Miami Dolphins kept allowing sacks at such an alarming rate.BEIJING — Chinese golfer Shanshan Feng shot a 9-under 64 Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over American Stacy Lewis after the third round of the Reignwood LPGA Classic. Shrouded in the Chinese capitals notorious smog, Feng carded nine birdies in a bogey-free round for a total of 21-under 198, boosting the chances of a home winner in the first LPGA tournament played in the country. Feng was in a two-way duel with Lewis all day before grabbing the outright lead for good with a birdie on 16. Both players added birdies on the final two holes, making for a total of eight for Lewis, who remains bogey-free in the tournament. Feng said she anticipated a similar duel in Sundays final round. “Ive played Stacy many times. I know shes a very aggressive player, and I know that on this course she could definitely drain a lot of birdies and chase back. I knew the lead wasnt secure,” said Feng, who won last years LPGA Championship to become the first Chinese major winner. “A one-stroke lead is very small. There are 18 holes tomorrow so theres still a challenge. If the conditions are right, you can get a very low score on this course.” The start of play was delayed because of the high levels of smog, and pooor visibility dogged the course for most of the day.dddddddddddd Several players donned surgical masks in hopes of filtering out some of the pollution. Top-ranked Inbee Park was another four strokes back in third after finishing with four straight birdies for a 66. Park had a slow start to the tournament, with first and second rounds of 69 and 68, but found her rhythm with birdies on five of the first seven holes. She then made two bogeys before her run of birdies at the end. “I got off to a good start and then in the middle I was slower and at the end of the round, everything went in,” Park said. “My putter just didnt want to go in for six or seven holes.” Park has won six tournaments this season, including three majors, but has struggled to maintain her dominant form over the last two months. “I just do my best,” she said. “If someone else plays better than me, thats too bad.” Australias Karrie Webb was seven shots back in fourth. Overnight leader Jessica Korda of the U.S. slipped to sixth after a 76 that included a double bogey and four bogeys. Another Chinese player, Xiyu Lin, was tied for seventh at 10 under along with Pornanong Phatlum of Thailand.
