RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — With a spectacular swivel-and-strike, James Rodriguez provided one of the highlights of the World Cup and gave Brazil reason to worry. Rodriguez scored one of the best goals of the tournament and added a second to put Colombia into the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time with a 2-0 win over Uruguay on Saturday - setting up a meeting with the host nation. Rodriguez added to his growing list memorable moments in Brazil when he gave his team the lead with a long-range volley as he turned in the 28th minute. He scored the second from close range shortly after the break as Colombia dominated an Uruguay side that sorely missed banned striker Luis Suarez. “I think now the toughest is coming up,” Rodriguez said of the quarterfinal match against Brazil. “Im happy because we are making history and as a young man I dreamed of being here. And of course we want to do even more.” Rodriguez now has a tournament-leading five goals in Brazil and further enhanced his status as perhaps the World Cups biggest revelation. In the absence of injured star Radamel Falcao, the Monaco winger has become the focal point of a Colombia team that won all three of its group games with impressive attacking play. Uruguay, meanwhile, simply couldnt find anyone to fill the absence of Suarez. The team struggled badly in attack and replacement striker Diego Forlan was substituted in the 53rd after a disappointing performance in what was likely his final World Cup appearance. Colombia is playing its first World Cup since 1998 and has already achieved its best-ever result. “Congratulations to all the Colombian people,” said coach Jose Pekerman, who is from Argentina. “The people in Colombia deserve this.” Colombia will play Brazil in the quarterfinals on July 4 in Fortaleza after the host nation beat Chile in a penalty shootout earlier Saturday. But Rodriguez showed once again that the Brazilians have every reason to be wary of Colombia. The opener was his most spectacular goal yet. He chested the ball down with his back to goal well outside the area and in one fluid motion turned around and fired a left-foot volley that went off the underside of the crossbar and into the net. It was a goal that came seemingly out of nowhere and provided another example of the technique and creativity that has made Rodriguez one of the standout players of the tournament. Uruguay defender Alvaro Pereira tried to clear the ball with a diving header, but it went straight to Abel Aguilar, who headed it forward toward Rodriguez. His manoeuvr only took a split second and left goalkeeper Fernando Muslera flailing helplessly as the ball looped over him and into the net. Rodriguez ran over the corner flag and thrust both hands out to his sides in a “how about that” gesture. “I think he is the best player of the tournament so far,” Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said. Rodriguezs second was a perfectly executed team move as Colombia worked the ball over from the right flank to the left, where Pablo Armero sent in a cross that was met by Juan Cuadrado at the far post. Cuadrado headed back across goal toward Rodriguez, who slotted in from just a few yards (meters) out. This time, the entire team ran over the corner flag for a celebratory dance. Tabarez tried to respond with a double substitution, taking off Forlan and Alvaro Pereira for Gaston Ramirez and Cristhian Stuani. That livened up the attack, with goalkeeper David Ospina having to make good saves from Cristhian Rodriguez and Maxi Pereira before diving to push away a shot from Edinson Cavani in the 84th. But in the end Uruguay simply couldnt cope without Suarez, who was banned for four months for biting an opponent in the group-stage victory against Italy that sent the team through to the next round. Suarez also missed Uruguays first game of the tournament, a 3-1 loss to Costa Rica, before scoring both goals in a 2-1 win over England. “We all knew what happened, but we had to forget about it and think positive,” Tabarez said. “Suarez is a great player, and I dont need to say it. He is very important. But we knew he wasnt going to play.” -—— Lineups: Colombia: David Ospina; Cristian Zapata, Mario Yepes, Pablo Armero, Juan Zuniga; Carlos Sanchez Abel Aguilar, Juan Cuadrado (Fredy Guarin, 81), James Rodriguez (Adrian Ramos, 85); Teofilo Gutierrez (Alexander Mejia, 68), Jackson Martinez. He made $537,000 last year and received a hefty raise deespite a disappointing season interrupted by injury, batting a career-low .dddddddddddd.249 with 24 home runs and 74 RBIs. Stanton is a frequent subject of trade speculation, and the thrifty Marlins havent offered the right fielder a long-term deal. He has 117 homers in his four major-league seasons and is only 24. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As “Sweet Caroline” pumped through the stadium and playoff-starved Panthers fans dressed all in black celebrated a big victory, Tom Brady ran after an official in search of an explanation. Thrilling game, bizarre ending. Brady and the Patriots were miffed after a penalty flag that was thrown in the end zone on the final play was suddenly picked up and waved off Monday night, giving the Carolina Panthers a 24-20 victory over New England for their sixth straight win. Cam Newton led the Panthers 83 yards on 13 plays and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ted Ginn Jr. with 59 seconds left to give the Panthers the lead. The Patriots had a chance at an improbable comeback when Brady moved New England to the Carolina 18 with 3 seconds left and fired into the end zone as time expired. Rookie safety Robert Lester intercepted the pass, but an official at the back of the end zone threw a flag for pass interference on linebacker Luke Kuechly, who had both arms wrapped around tight end Rob Gronkowski. The officials then gathered, however, and referee Clete Blakeman announced there was no foul on the play and the game was over. “There was no explanation given to me. Officials ran off the field. I didnt see anything,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. “There was a flag thrown and then the game was over.” Blakeman said after the game that back judge Terrence Miles saw there was contact and Kuechly was not playing the ball, and that initially led Miles to call defensive pass interference. But Blakeman said the officials met and decided the ball was “underthrown” and it came down to a matter of “uncatchability.” A pass-interference call would have put the ball on the 1-yard line and given the Patriots one more shot at a game-winning touchdown with no time on the clock. “You never like to end the game like that on a call but Im pleased that our officiating crew got together and communicated and discussed it and ultimately we believe we got it right,” Blakeman said. An angry Brady ran down two officials to argue the call as they walked off the field, but later said he didnt get a good look at the play. “I dont make the calls or the rules,” Brady said. “I wish it wouldnt have come down to that. I think there were plenty of plays we couldve made. But it did, and theyre going to make the call or theyre not going to make the call. But we can play better than that.” Brady conceded he was cautious on the throw. “(Gronkowski) was kind of weaving in and out of there. I didnt really want to throw it over his head and out of bounds, so I was a little indecisive,” he said. “It wasnt a great throw. No excuses. Should have been a better throw.” Kuechly, who had a critical pass-interference call in a Week 2 loss to Buffalo, was a little nervous when he saw the flag on the ground. “I was like, Oh, jeez. I dont know what this is going to be,” Kuechly said. “My back was to Brady. I was just playing his eyes, playing his hands, waiting for his eyes to get big and his hands to go up and I was going to try to break it down. I didnt really see where the ball went. I think Robert had a hand on it or something. There were guys around that ball and thats what helps you out.” Given a reprieve, the Panthers (7-3) celebrated. Brady finished 29 of 40 for 296 yards and one touchdown. Newton completed 19 of 28 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran seven times for 62 yards in what will go down as one of his best games a pro. After the game, Carolina coach Ron Rivera called it a “gutsy effort.” Newtons winning touchdown drive in the waning minutes of a game was the type of leadership performance the Panthers have been waiting for from the third-year pro. Newton said “people want to keep making it about me and the plays that I made, but its not a one-man show, by far.” It just seemed that way. He was 5 of 8 for 57 yards and ran twice for 18 yards on the go-ahead drive. Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith, who had 62 yards on four catches, said Newton came of age Monday night. “Its just fantastic, just watching Cam grow, watching him lead this team, watching him go 85 yards,” Smith said. “You hear all about statistics, about other guys having game-winning drives. Now Cam has his game-winning drive against a big team, against a worthy opponent. Just watching the young man grow — I just saw that young, 24-year old Cam Newton just chipping away and just a little hint of greatness is starting to shine through a little bit.” Carolina moved within a game of first-place New Orleans in the NFC South. The win came eight days after a 10-9 victory over reigning NFC champion San Francisco. The Panthers entered the fourth quarter with a 17-10 lead, but Stevan Ridley made up for an earlier fumble with a 1-yard touchdown run and the Patriots (7-3) took a 20-17 lead with 6:32 left when Stephen Gostkowski slipped a 26-yard field goal just inside the left upright. Carolina came right back down the field and Newton hit the speedy Ginn on a hitch route. Ginn escaped Kyle Arrington along the left sideline and outraced Logan Ryan to the left pylon for his third touchdown of the season. Newton gave Carolina a 17-10 lead in the third quarter on an 81-yard touchdown drive that took more than 8 minutes off the clock and featured a scramble in which the third-year quarterback avoided four tacklers and turned a potential 20-yard sack into a 14-yard gain and a first down. Newton completed all seven passes on the drive for 77 yards, finding Greg Olsen at the right pylon with 2:10 left to put the Panthers back in front. “Cam did the things he needed to do to put us in position to win the football game,” Rivera said. “It has a lot to do with his maturity that we have talked about.” Carolina entered the night as the NFLs No. 1 defence and didnt disappoint early, sacking Brady twice and holding Gronkowski to one catch for 14 yards in the opening half. The Panthers hadnt given up a touchdown in eight straight quarters before Gronkowskis short TD catch tied the score at 10 on the first drive of the second half. Newton got Carolina the early lead by zipping a third-down throw to Brandon LaFell near the goal line with 2:44 left in the first quarter, capping a 90-yard drive that took more than 5 minutes off the clock. The drive included a 42-yard catch by Smith against cornerback Aqib Talib, who drew a personal foul penalty when he refused to let go of Smiths right foot after the receivers second catch, setting off a brief scuffle. Panthers defensive end Charles Johnson left early in the third quarter with a right knee injury but returned on New Englands final drive. NOTES: The Panthers have outscored their opponents 45-8 in the first quarter. … The Panthers held a moment of silence before the game for former team President Mike McCormack, who died last week. … Brady fell to 13-5 on Monday night. … Patriots tight end Michael Hoomanawanui injured his knee in the first half and didnt return. … The Panthers got only 41 yards rushing on 16 carries from their three running backs. … Shane Vereen had 65 yards on eight receptions in his first game since returning from a broken left wrist in the season opener. But amidst the celebrations, its important the Whitecaps return to winning ways in Major League Soccer against an Earthquakes team that is below them in the Western Conference standings. The Form: Its now four matches without a victory for the Whitecaps who are yet to win against a Western Conference opponent this season, but they have tied their last two games against two of the top teams in Major League Soccer. In Utah last Saturday, the Whitecaps started terribly, going two goals down inside the first nine minutes against Real Salt Lake, but the second half was much improved, and a late comeback ensured the Whitecaps left Rio Tinto Stadium with a point. The Big Question: Will either of the Uruguayans be given the chance to start? Nicolas Mezquida and Sebastian Fernandez made an impact coming off the bench at Real Salt Lake a week ago, both scoring a goal, including a fantastic strike from Fernandez in the final minute of stoppage time to tie the match. Prior to the game, Carl Robinson said last week that the Uruguayan duo had been performing very well in training and wear very close to getting a start in the team. Mezquida has appeared in four matches this season, all as a substitute, while Fernandez started the season but then was left on the bench after a couple of less effective performances. With a Canadian Championship semifinal against Toronto FC coming up on Wednesday, its likely Mezquida and Fernandez will start at least one of the two games. “Everyone will get their chance,” said Robinson after training on Thursday. “As a player, all you want is the chance to play and show what you can do, and most of the players will get that chance.” The Lineup: Chilean midfielder Pedro Morales missed the trip to Real Salt. Lake to try and heal a back problem that has plagued him in the opening weeks of the season, but if he has fully recovered, he is likely to return to the Whitecaps lineup. Once again, there is a big decision for Carl Robinson in the centre of defence. Last week, Jay DeMerit staayed at home as Honduran international Johnny Leveron partnered Andy OBrien at the back.dddddddddddd Robinson must decide whether to stick with that pairing and bring some consistency to the back line, or bring DeMerit back into the eleven. Nigel Reo-Coker played the first three matches of the season but hasnt played since due to injury, coachs decision and most recently illness. Its doubtful that Reo-Coker will be considered for the starting lineup but he could return on the bench. The Opposition: San Jose Earthquakes started the season with a five match winless run, but that came to an end last weekend when they won 1-0 at home to Chivas USA. The Quakes are yet to win away from home this season, losing 1-0 at Kansas City and tying 0-0 at Colorado. Yannick Djalo scored the only goal of the game against Chivas. The 27-year-old from Portugal is still adapting in his first few weeks in Major League Soccer as he gets fully fit, but he is a quality addition for the Quakes this season, joining on loan from Benfica. 2012 MLS MVP Chris Wondolowski has scored three goals in six matches so far this season as he looks to win a place in Jurgen Klinsmanns United States squad for this summers World Cup in Brazil. The 31-year-old has an excellent goal scoring record against the Whitecaps. On a day where there will be plenty of focus on the soccer history of Vancouver, it is fitting that there is a heavy Vancouver presence amongst the Earthquakes coaching staff. Head Coach Mark Watson played for Whitecaps in 1994 and 2005 while assistant coach Nick Dasovic previously played for the 86ers and was a player coach with Caps from 2002 to 2005. Both men are from Vancouver. The Odds: The Earthquakes are yet to win in Vancouver against the Whitecaps in Major League Soccer and the Caps must be favourites heading in. Carl Robinsons team are four points ahead of the Quakes in the standings but have played two games more. The Whitecaps continue to develop under Robinson, but they must start to put together 90 minute performances if they are to get back to winning ways. Where To Watch: Whitecaps against San Jose is live on TSN2 on Saturday. Were on air with a special Whitecaps 40th anniversary pre-match show at 6:30pm et/3:30pm pt. Sweden completed a sweep of the Olympic cross-country relays in Sochi, winning gold in the mens event on Sunday to go along with the title won in the womens event on Saturday. The team of Lars Nelson, Daniel Richardsson, Johan Olsson, and anchor Marcus Hellner cruised to victory in the 4×10 km event, winning in a time of one hour, 28 minutes, and 42.0 seconds. Hellner was given a 14-second lead to work with, and stretched it to 27 seconds before crossing the finish line, waving a Swedish flag he grabbed from the crowd. Spurred by the home crowd and an appearance by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia fought off a surprising France team for the silver, crossing the line in 1:29:09.3. France, not even expected to contend in this event, won bronze in 1:29:13.9. The Canadian team of Len Valjas, Jesse Cockney, Graeme Killick and Ivan Babikov finished 12th in 1:33:19.0. Canadas Devon Kershaw and Alex Harvey were left off the relay team, possibly being rested for the team sprint on Wednesday. Coming off a disappointing result in the womens relay, with the heavy favourites finishing fifth, Norway again failed to hit the podium, placing fourth with a time of 1:29:51.7, well off the top-three finishers. TAMPA, Fla. – Carlos Beltran is excited to play alongside Derek Jeter on the New York Yankees. “I know he has a lot of championships, but I have none,” Beltran said. “Hopefully I can win one.” Now 36 and still in search of his first World Series title, Beltran left the St. Louis Cardinals for a $45 million, three-year deal with the Yankees, his sixth major league team in 17 seasons. Beltran hit .296 last season with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs, reaching the World Series for the first time. Now hes on a team that expects to be in the World Series every year. “Of course we have to win,” the eight-time All-Star outfielder said Monday after his first workout at the teams minor league complex. “I dont know how far we will go, but at least we have to do something positive, and better than what they did last year, no doubt about that.” After missing the playoffs for just the second time in 19 years, New York embarked on a spending spree of nearly half-a-billion dollars, adding four marquee free agents in Beltran, Masahiro Tanaka, Brian McCann and Jacoby Ellsbury. “They went out and spent a lot money on players to try to improve the ballclub,” Beltran said. “You want to be around an organization like that, where every year theyre trying to improve, theyre trying to get better.” Second baseman Robinson Cano — the Yankees top hitter — did leave for a $240 million, 10-year deal with Seattle, while Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte both retired. “I think we have a real good team,” Beltran said. “I believe the lineup that we have, we have a pretty good lineup.” Beltran joined Brian Roberts, Kelly Johnson and Eduardo Nunez three days before the first full-squad workout. After batting practice, instead of taking fly balls, Beltran fielded grounders at second with Roberts, signed as Canos replacement. “Im just trying to get to know the guys,” Beltran said. “I was talking to Roberts a little bit there. Hes a switch-hitter. Im a switch-hitter. So, we were talking about, maybe, working together a little bit this year.” Beltran did not get a chance to work out with Jeter, who announced last week that he will retire after the 2014 season. The Yankees captain, who has been practicing at the minor league complex for past four weeks, usually takes a few days off before formal workouts begin. “For me, hes been a big part of baseball,” Beltran said. “I feel personally, he got enough of baseball. Hes been doing this so long, and doing it the right way. Hes a pro on, off the field. Its sad for baseball, youre going to lose a guy like that, but at the same time theres a lot of younger guys coming up that, hopefully, they could take his spot.” “Being able to play with a guy that is a Hall of Famer, first-ballot Hall of Famer, is a great feeling,” Beltran added. “Im just looking forward to playing with him, looking forward to hopefully have this team win a championship.” NOTES: Manager Joe Girardi wouldnt go into detail on any problem the Yankees had with Canos lack of hustle at times. Hitting coach Kevin Long was quoted in Mondays editions of the New York Daily News as saying “If somebody told me I was a dog, Id have to fix that. When you choose not to, you leave yourself open to taking heat, and thats your fault. For whatever reason, Robbie chose not to.” Girardi pulled Cano from a game against Tampa Bay in September 2008 when he was late retrieving Cliff Floyds hard grounder that caromed into shallow right field, then benched the second baseman the following night. “I have discussions with all of our players on how we expect them to play the game,” Girardi said. … Girardi also said RHP Michael Pineda, sidelined since shoulder surgery two years ago, looked good in his bullpen session Monday. Pineda is among the candidates for the No. 5 starter. … RHP Yoshinori Tateyama, his arrival delayed by a visa issue, began workouts after missing two days. The Korea Football Association announced Thursday that Park Joo-ho will join the 23-man squad to replace the 21-year-old Kim, a Japan-based left back who has played nine internationals since Hong Myung-bo took over as head coach last year. PITTSBURGH — The injury-ravaged Pittsburgh Penguins keep winning. Sidney Crosby scored his 20th goal of the season Saturday, helping the Penguins win their season-high seventh straight game, 4-3 over the Calgary Flames. “Winning always makes things better,” Crosby said. “Theres no secret there. It doesnt matter what team you play on, winning solves everything.” The Penguins, who lead the Eastern Conference with 55 points, played without star centre Evgeni Malkin and five of their top six defencemen for the fourth straight game, but that didnt stop them from winning their 10th straight at home and picking up their 12th victory in 13 games. “We do our best to chip in and get through this,” Crosby said. “Its not common, youre not used to being in this situation, but just having the mindset of going out there to outwork the other team has done us well.” Crosby, who had a goal and two assists, extended his season-high points streak to 10 games. He leads the league with 54 points. Pascal Dupuis added his seventh goal of the season, Harry Zolnierczyk scored his first with the team and James Neal added a goal. Mike Cammalleri scored his first goal in nine games for the Flames. Jiri Hudler netted his 10th, and Paul Byron had the other goal. The Flames have lost four straight and six of their last nine. “We never quit,” Flames coach Bob Hartley said. “We kept going at the net. With a little luck, maybe we could have gotten the tying goal. Its a tough loss to swallow.” Pittsburgh jumped to a two-goal lead and went up 4-1 on goals from Crosby and Neal. But Calgary scored twice — Cammalleri with 45 seconds left in the second period and Hudler 1:03 into the third period to make it 4-3. The Flames came up empty on an ensuing power play and continued to press for the tying goal. Their best chance came with 6:25 remaining when Joe Colborne hit the post to the right of goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, who won his 21st game of the season. “They had more than one good opportunity around our net, and certainly the one that went off the post,” Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said.dddddddddddd Despite all their injuries, the Penguins have been better than any other team in the league since Nov. 18, registering the most wins and points during that span. Theyve done it playing from ahead too as Pittsburgh has trailed for just 3:12 in its past nine games. Dupuis and Zolnierczyk scored 1:19 apart midway through the first period, staking the Penguins to another early two-goal lead. The Penguins are an NHL-best 17-3 at home and 22-2 when scoring first. Malkin, who injured his left leg last Saturday at Detroit, skated the past two days and could return after Christmas. Penguins defenceman Rob Scuderi (broken ankle) and forward Tanner Glass (broken hand) also could return soon during an upcoming stretch in which Pittsburgh plays seven of its next nine on the road. Additionally, Penguins defenceman Brooks Orpik passed a concussion test Friday and practiced for the first time since Dec. 7 when he was pushed to the ice by Bruins forward Shawn Thornton. Thornton, who punched Orpik while he was down, was suspended by the NHL for 15 games. The Flames, who just finished a five-game road trip, could be without two key players when they return to Canada for a five-game homestand that starts Monday against St. Louis. Assistant captain Curtis Glencross left early in the first period, injuring his left knee after an awkward fall into the boards. Glencross, who needed assistance to the dressing room, remained on the ice until the whistle, but couldnt put weight on his leg. Flames defenceman Kris Russell, playing in his 400th career game, also left in the third period with a leg injury. Hartley did not have an injury update after the game, noting both will be evaluated on Sunday. “The fact that they didnt come back is not good news,” Hartley said. “Theyre two great leaders, but at the same time there is nothing we can do about injuries.” NOTES: The Penguins signed backup goalie Jeff Zatkoff to a two-year contract extension. … The Flames scratched Blair Jones, T.J. COLOGNE, Germany — Felix Sturm retained the WBA middleweight title on Friday night after fellow German Sebastian Zbik retired before the 10th round at the Lanxess Arena. Zbik made the better start but appeared to tire midway through the bout, with the defending champion looking fresher despite taking some heavy blows. Sturm had Zbik clearly troubled at the end of the ninth round, with American referee Raul Caiz Sr. asking the challenger if he could continue. Though the 30-year-old Zbik insisted that he could, his corner felt otherwise and Caiz ended the fight before the next round could start. “We fought a fair fight. It was a good advertisement for boxing,” Sturm said after successfully defending his title for the 12th time. “Sebastians a great boxer, he moved very well,” Sturm added. “I had to keep my pace. It took a while and it was one of my hardest fights but thank God it worked out.” Sturm, a 33-year-old German of Bosnian descent, improved his record to 37-2-2 with 16 knockouts. His last defeat came to Javier Castillejo in 2006 before he won the WBA title back from the Spaniard the following year. “I have to admit without any grudges that Felix clearly beat me,” said Zbik, who dropped to 30-2 (10 KOs). Coburn said on ABCs “Good Morning America” he was “very ashamed of myself. Very ashamed. I need to apologize to a lot of people, including my wife, Carolyn.” She tried to intervene as Saturdays interview got out of control, explaining that her husband was “very emotional and I was trying to calm him down.” Coburn also apologized to the connections of winning horse Tonalist, saying: “I did not mean to take anything away from them.” On Saturday, he had said that Tonalist took “the cowards way out” by skipping the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Sunday, he doubled down by pointing out that “it wouldnt be fair if I played basketball with a child in a wheelchair because I got an unfair advantage.” By Monday though, he tried to make amends. Coburns lower lip quivered at times during the interview in which he apologized to co-owner Perry Maartin and trainer Art Sherman, among others.dddddddddddd “I need to apologize to the world and America, our fans that have written us, given us so much support. I apologize, I sincerely apologize,” Coburn said. “This is Americas horse. I wanted this so much, for this horse to win the Triple Crown for the people of America.” If the Belmont had only been open to horses than ran in the Derby and Preakness, there would have been just three horses in Saturdays race, making it unlikely the third-largest crowd of 102,199 would have shown up or that a record $19,105,877 would have been wagered on-track. California Chrome, General a Rod and Ride On Curlin were the only horses to run in all three. General a Rod finished seventh in the Belmont and Ride On Curlin did not finish. California Chrome beat them both, but finished tied for fourth, possibly as a result of a cut foot that he apparently sustained after bumping another horse leaving the starting gate. “Hell be able to race again,” Coburn said. PARIS — Top-seeded Maria Sharapova lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in an all-Russian semifinal of the Open GDF Suez on Saturday. Pavlyuchenkova will play third-seeded Sara Errani of Italy for her first final since the Korea Open in September. Errani outlasted Alize Cornet of France 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (5). “I knew that I had to serve well because Maria has one of the best returns on the tour, probably,” Pavlyuchenkova said. “I remember playing her like three or four years ago, she broke me a lot of times and that was the key for her to win.” In their only previous meeting, Sharapova beat Pavlyuchenkova in 2010 in Cincinnati. Sharapova led 3-0 in the opening set but her compatriot broke back in the seventh game. Pavlyuchenkova lost the first set by sending a backhand wide as Sharapova imposed her aggressive game, having a 15-9 edge in winners and winning nine of 10 points at the net. “I thought I started the match really well but, as the match continued, I stopped doing the things that really helped me in the beginning,” Sharapova said. “I wasnt being aggressive, I wasnt in the court.” Pavlyuchenkova put the four-time Grand Slam champion under pressure in the second set, capitalizing on a double fault and a forehand error to break Sharapova in the opening game. The 26th-ranked Pavlyuchenkova evened the match with a backhand winner. “She found her spots really well,” Sharapova said. “Theres not much I could do when she hit those good first serves.” They traded breaks early in the final set. Sharapova lost the match by finishing with two consecutive double faults. Sharapova made five double faults in the last set, landing only 48 per cent of her first serves. In the second semifinal, Cornet won five more points than Errani, but the Italian held her nerve in the tiebreakers. Errani failed to serve out the first set at 5-4 and 6-5. But last years runner-up recovered by jumping to a 5-1 lead in the tiebreaker. Cornet netted a forehand to drop the opening set. Cornet broke serve three times in the second set and levelled the match with a backhand winner. In the final set, Errani failed to serve out the match at 5-4 but she steadied herself to win the last two points in the tiebreaker. Price struck out 10 in his Detroit debut and was long gone when Alex Avila homered in the 12th inning to lift the Tigers over the New York Yankees 4-3 Tuesday night.A busy day for Paul Maurice ended with a win as he made his debut behind the Winnipeg Jets bench. It was win number 461 of his career, in his 1085th game as an NHL coach. The win snapped the Jets five game losing streak. The Coyotes opened the scoring on a power play, with Oliver Ekman-Larsson getting his fifth of the year, but 36 seconds later Olli Jokinen with his 12th would tie the game, with Dustin Byfuglien getting the assist. Late in the first Zach Bogosian forced a turnover, with Eric ODell notching his second in as many games as the first period ended 2-1. Coach Maurice reconfigured the lines going into the game, with Devin Setoguchi joining Jokinen and Byfuglien. Michael Frolik moved to the right side with Bryan Little and Andrew Ladd, Mark Scheifele centered Blake Wheeler and Chris Thorburn, with ODell between James Wright and Anthony Peluso. Evander Kane remained out of the lineup with a hand injury, while the defence remained the same as it was Saturday. Shots in the first were 12-7 in the Jets favour. The only goal of the second period came from Wheeler, his team leading 17th of the year. Scheifele had the only assist as he continues to lead all NHL rookies in assists with 17. Shots in the second were 13-6 Jets. The Coyotes started the third period on a power play and had some chances but Ondrej Pavelec finished the second with a couple of big saves and made a few more in the third when called upon. The Jets put the game away with Frolik breaking a 10-game goalless stretch with his 10th from Adam Pardy and Little. Setoguchi scored his first in 19 games from Byfuglien and Toby Enstrom on a power play to close out the scoring. For Setoguchi it was his eighth of the year in a game that he was very good in. Pardy how has four assists in his last five games, Byfuglien has three goals and five assists in his last six games, four goals and 11 assists in his last 15 games, and is 18 points in the 24 power play goals the Jets have scored this season.dddddddddddd Final shots were 38-19. The Jets directed 73 shots at the Phoenix goal, with 21 missing and another 14 blocked. Byfuglien led the way with six shots on goal, Enstrom led in ice time with 26:21, Jacob Trouba was a plus-three, while Scheifele led the Jets in face-offs winning 14 of 20 for a 70 per cent success rate. Jets went one for eight on the power play but had 15 power play shots in the game. As for the game Coach Maurice liked plenty. “The compete level and energy level of our group. They did the one thing we had talked about that when adversity came to the doorstep that next goal was huge,” Maurice said after the game. “The bench didnt get quiet, we stayed positive. It was really, really important that we scored that goal to make it 1-1. They wanted to get out of this, they wanted to make it better.” As for the MTS Centre crowd and the atmosphere in the building, Maurice said it was “awesome, very special for me. I tell every rookie, you get one first game in the NHL. Soak it in, enjoy it and thats what I did. It was a special moment for me in my career.” Asked what he told the players after the game, Maurice added"I normally dont talk much, but I congratulated them, thanked them, and then cancelled the day off they were supposed to have." Captain Ladd got the game puck and presented it to his Coach. “The puck means a lot. I will give it to my family,” Maurice said post-game. As for his new team: “Weve got some speed, weve got some skill, but we still do things at times we dont need to do. We have to get better.” He also liked the play of Pavelec saying “he was square and where he needed to be. I felt safe with him.” The Jets travel to Calgary for a game Thursday (TSN Jets, TSN 1290) as they are in a stretch of five straight and eight of nine against Western Conference teams. Yesterday, an article from the Huffington post took a detailed look at the current state of the Silverdome, and as you can see from the images, it isnt pretty. Head to the UniquelyDetroit Facebook page for a chance to win a seat from the Silverdome! <a href="http://t.co/daqLNCHgO2">http://t.co/daqLNCHgO2</a> pic.twitter.com/rZfwmeRQ9w— Uniquely Detroit (UniquelyDetroit) April 29, 2014 Although the images of the ruins, and the absence of a tenant, would make you think that the Silverdome has been abandoned for over a decade, it actually played host to a soccer game between European giants AC Milan and Panathinaikos only a few years ago. It was also the home field for an American Ultimate Disc team in 2012, the Detroit Mechanix. It seems the lack of a roof, combined with the exposure to a less than forgiving mother nature, has desecrated the insides of the stadium. For more images, and an incredible video taken from inside the Silverdome ruins, check out the full article here. jerseys from china . wholesale nfl jerseys . Ausmus says he realized his words were insensitive and in poor taste as soon as they left his mouth. The first-year manager was asked after Detroits 2-1 loss to Kansas City on Wednesday how his mood is when he heads home from the ballpark these days. DETROIT — Less than two years after boldly signing Prince Fielder to a $214 million contract, the Detroit Tigers traded the slugging first baseman to Texas in another blockbuster move. Fielder was dealt to the Rangers on Wednesday night for second baseman Ian Kinsler. The Tigers agreed to pay the Rangers $30 million as part of the swap, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the amount of money exchanged was not revealed when the teams announced the trade. The $30 million is payable from 2016-20. “Obviously, a very exciting trade for us in adding Prince Fielder to the organization,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. “Also a tough trade to make in that Ian Kinslers been with the organization since he was drafted in 03, and weve signed him here a couple of times. Been here, a catalyst for our World Series clubs, and a huge part of this. A winning guy, a heart-and-soul guy, and Detroit got a tremendous player and person.” Its the first headline-grabbing move of baseballs off-season, and it involves two of the American Leagues top teams. Detroit has won three consecutive AL Central titles and reached the World Series in 2012, while Texas won the AL pennant in 2010 and 2011. Fielder, a five-time All-Star, had to consent to the trade before it could be completed. The big first baseman signed a $214 million, nine-year contract with the Tigers before the 2012 season that includes a limited no-trade provision. “Were thankful for what he did for us,” Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said. “Itll be a bat that we miss at times — theres no doubt about it.” Kinsler just finished the first season of a $75 million, five-year contract. With stars like Fielder, Justin Verlander, Miguel Cabrera and Anibal Sanchez in the fold, Detroits payroll had become one of the games biggest. And although Fielder hit 55 home runs over the last two years for the Tigers, his numbers dipped this season and he struggled in the playoffs when Detroit lost to Boston in the AL championship series. Fielder hit .279 with 25 homers this year. He drove in 106 runs, but it was his lowest home run total over a full season. He did not have a single RBI in the 2013 post-season and hit .182 in the ALCS. Daniels said the trade came together quickly — the first discussions took place Tuesday. The Rangers will welcome the durable Fielder, who has played 162 games in four of the last five seasons. Texas was interested in Fielder when he signed with Detroit as a free agent. “Our offer was well below what it ended up being, so we werent that close,” Daniels said. “I thought he was a genuine guy that really loved the game, really loved playing the game, loved his boys, his sons.” Kinsler batted .277 with 13 homers this year. The a three-time All-Star was limited to 136 games because of injuries to his ribs and right side. Kinsler stole 15 bases in 2013 — not a high total by his standards but more than any player on the Detroit team he is joining. The trade could save the Tigers more than $75 million in the long run, giving them more financial flexibility with Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer a year from free agency. Fielder is still only 29, and the Rangers are set to add a big bat to the middle of their lineup while also resolving a logjam in the middle of their infield. Jurickson Profar, a highlly touted 20-year-old prospect, appeared to be blocked by Kinsler and shortstop Elvis Andrus.dddddddddddd Now, Profar should have a chance to play regularly. The Tigers signed Fielder to a huge contract shortly before spring training in 2012 — after designated hitter Victor Martinez injured his knee. Martinez came back in 2013. With Fielder gone, Cabrera may move from third base back to first. “Im really not sure what were going to do as we sit here now today,” Dombrowski said. “Eventually, we see him as a first baseman. Will it happen this year or not? Im not sure.” The 31-year-old Kinsler fills a need at second base for Detroit after Omar Infante became a free agent. Fielder is due $168 million through 2020, a salary of $24 million per season. Under his no-trade clause, he submits a list of 10 teams each year that he can be traded to without his approval. Texas was not on that list this year, but Fielder agreed to accept the trade and instructed agent Scott Boras to approve the deal. “If he was coming off the best year of his career, hes not available,” Daniels said. “I think thats kind of the whole idea of this deal — if anybody feels like thats a sign of things to come, that hes slipping, you may not like the deal. We dont feel that way. We dont feel that way at all.” Kinsler is guaranteed $62 million through 2017: $16 million in each of the next two seasons, $14 million in 2016, $11 million in 2017 and a $5 million buyout of a $10 million option. Its already been an unpredictable off-season for the Tigers. Manager Jim Leyland stepped down after the season and was replaced by Brad Ausmus. Detroit could have come back with a similar roster and probably been favoured to win the division again, but now more changes seem possible. “If you put Kinslers bat at the top of the lineup, thats an instant threat,” Ausmus said. “It changes the dynamic, but it doesnt mean its any less potent.” If Cabrera moves back to first base, prospect Nick Castellanos might replace him at third. Previously, it appeared Castellanos would have to play the outfield if both Cabrera and Fielder were still on the team. Andy Dirks is still available to play left field, but thats a spot the Tigers could still try to upgrade. They also have six capable starting pitchers — Drew Smyly was used in the bullpen this year — so thats a surplus that could come in handy in a possible trade. Detroits bullpen will likely undergo a makeover after struggling last season. The Rangers lost slugging outfielder Nelson Cruz to a late-season suspension as a result of MLBs investigation in the Biogenesis case. Hes now a free agent, and if Texas loses him, Fielder, who hit 50 homers in 2007 for Milwaukee at 23, should help replace his production. “A huge focus for us this winter was finding some kind of middle-of-the-order presence and power, and at 29 years old, I still think theres still a lot of big run production and years ahead of him,” Daniels said. Adrian Beltre and Alex Rios are among the dangerous hitters under contract next season in Texas. Beltre had an AL-high 199 hits and Rios, acquired from the Chicago White Sox in August after Cruz was suspended, has a year left on his deal. The Rangers lost a one-game tiebreaker to Tampa Bay for the second AL wild card this year. The trade agreement was first reported by CBSSports.com. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Panthers Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy was released from jail on $17,000 bond Wednesday, one day after being arrested on charges of assault on a female and communicating threats. Hardy left jail wearing sweatpants and a black tank top. He did not speak to reporters. Charlotte Mecklenburg County Judge Rebecca Thorne Tin called Hardy a potential threat and ordered him not to have any contact with the accuser and to attend three Alcoholic Anonymous meetings per week. In the arrest warrant, the 24-year-old accuser alleges Hardy threw her on a pile of guns and threatened to kill her. She filed a protective restraining order against Hardy on Wednesday, saying he attacked her in his apartment and “picked me up and threw me into the tile tub area in the bathroom” and that she “has bruises from head to toe.” She also says in the filing that the 6-foot-4, 290-pound Hardy pulled her by the hair and “was screaming he was going to kill me, break my arms and other threats.” She says Hardy choked her with both hands around her throat before picking her up and throwing her onto a couch “covered with assault rifles and/or shotguns” and “bragged that the guns were loaded.” “He threatened to shoot me if I went to the media or reported his assault to anyone,” she says. She says Hardy has approximately 25 to 30 firearms in his downtown Charlotte apartment, including an AK-47. She says she eventually got out of the apartment, where she ran into Charlotte Mecklenburg police. Hardys attorney, Chris Fialko, refuted those allegations Wednesday. He argued in court — and later outside the courtroom — that Hardy and Sammy Curtis, his administrative assistant, were attacked by the accuser, and that it was Hardy who made the 911 call to police at 4:18 a.m. Tuesday. The accusers attorney, Stephen Goodwin, said his client was held down by Curtis and prevented from calling police. Goodwin called Fialkos claim that Hardy was the one attacked by the accuser false. “The physical evidence doesnt even come close to matching that,” Goodwin said. There were conflicting reports from 911 calls obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday night from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. On a call made by Hardy, the NFL player can be heard saying, “My assistant is trying to restrain her and shes trying to break free and hit me with her heel. Im literally running around the table right now.” Hardy also mentions in the call that he thinks the accuser is “on coke or something. I dont know. Shes been drinking. I dont know what shes on, man.” In another call by someone at the players condominium, an unidentified woman tells the operator that the woman had been beaten for more than 30 minutes. “Hes beating her (butt) in there. Some girls getting her (butt) beat upstairs and I heard it. And I seen it. Hes beating her (butt) right now.” Goodwin said Hardy and the accuser, who the lawyer said works as a waitress in Charlotte, were in a relationship and previously lived together. They were not living together at the time of the incident, which occurred at an “after hours” party. Goodwin said he doesnt know what sparked the fight, but Tin stated in the courtroom that both parties were drinking alcohol. Judge Tin said the court was “very concerned” about the bruises on the accusers neck and back. Hardy spent Tuesday night in jail and appeared in court Wednesday wearing an orange jump suit. The incident began early Tuesday morning. Police said patrol officers responded to a domestic violence assault call at 4:18 a.m. Hardy tied a franchise record with 15 sacks last season for the leagues second-ranked defence. He had 11 sacks in 2012. That production convinced the salary-cap strapped Panthers to make Hardy their franchise player at $13.116 million for one season. Hardy signed the teams offer sheet in March. The Panthers said in a statement Tuesday they were “very disappointed” to learn of the allegations and planned to investigate. Hardys NFL agent, Drew Rosenhaus, was in the courtroom but declined comment. Hardys next court date is June 27. The Panthers organization is particularly sensitive to domestic violence issues. In 2001, Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth was found guilty of conspiring to murder his girlfriend, Cherica Adams, who was carrying his child. Carruth was sentenced to 18 to 24 years in prison. Hardys court appearance occurred on the same day the Panthers hosted a breakfast at their stadium for “Men For Change,” a group that serves victims of domestic violence. GLENDALE, Ariz. — Coyotes coach Dave Tippett thinks of one thing when he watches Eastern Conference teams struggle against Western opponents before they get to Phoenix: His team must keep pace. So far, so good for the Coyotes, who despite injuries and illness have stayed in the hunt in the rugged West thanks to their dominance of the weaker East. The Coyotes were again without top goal scorer Shane Doan due to an illness on Thursday night, but it didnt matter. Rob Klinkhammer had two goals and an assist, Mikkel Boedker scored twice, and Mike Ribeiro added a goal and two assists in a 6-3 win over the hapless New York Islanders. Keith Yandle added a goal, and Mike Smith made 21 saves in his return after missing a game due to illness as the Coyotes improved to 8-1-1 against Eastern teams. “They go through California and whatever and it seems like they lose games there,” Tippett said of the Eastern clubs. “So we look at it as if we lose to them then were losing ground on people.” The Coyotes snapped a three-game home losing skid and avenged their lone defeat to an Eastern team — a 6-1 rout by the Islanders two months ago — with an all-around effort. “Everyone can chip in. Everyone can score,” Ribeiro said. “I think its hard for other teams to match up against us.” Weary at the end of a five-game trip, the Islanders were no match. “I thought our forwards were really skating tonight, and as a back end, as a group, it wasnt there,” defenceman Thomas Hickey said. John Tavares netted his 13th goal, and Eric Boulton and Kyle Okposo also scored for the Islanders. Two nights after making 46 saves in a shootout victory over San Jose, Kevin Poulin allowed all six goals on 36 shots in New Yorks 11th loss in 12 games. Not even the return of defenceman Brian Strait, who missed 23 games due to injury, could help the Islanders, who were plagued by turnovers and shaky blue-line play. “We just couldnt get in a rhythm, and for whatever reason we tried to overhandle the puck. Youre not going to have success in this league,” Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. “Guys are too fast, too strong.” Islanders top prospect Ryan Strome didnt get the chance to make his NHL debut. A day after the No. 5 pick in the 2011 draft was called up from Bridgeport of the AHL, Strome went through the morning skate but was a healthy scratch. Capuano said he wanted to get the 20-year-old centre “acclimated in our meetings” before he plays. New York, outshot 17-6 in the first period when centre Casey Cizikas left with a jaw injury, entered last in the league on the penalty kill at 71.3 per cent. Yandles power-play goal made it 1-1. Klinkhammer made it 2-1 when his centring pass from the corner bounced off defenceman Aaron Ness stick and into the net at 2:34 of the second. Less than two minutes later, Boedker slipped a shot past an out-of-position Poulin following a pileup in front. The Coyotes went ahead 4-1 at 6:15 when Ribeiro beat Poulin high for his ninth goal. The Islanders recovered, getting goals from Tavares and Okposo (10th). The second was a soft shot that trickled through Smith to make it 4-3. But the Coyotes settled down the rest of the way amid some reason for optimism regarding Doan, who missed his third straight game and has undergone a series of tests since being sidelined. Tippett said it was possible he will accompany the team on a trip to eastern Canada starting Tuesday, when the Coyotes hope to continue to feast on the East. “Its about us making sure were staying in the pack in the West here,” he said. NOTES: The Islanders activated G Evgeni Nabokov from the injured list and sent Anders Nilsson to Bridgeport (AHL). Nabokov, who missed 11 games with a groin injury, backed up Poulin. … New York D Radek Martinek (back spasms) replaced Strait on the injured list. . D Matt Carkner was a healthy scratch for New York. . Coyotes D Derek Morris (personal issue) missed his third straight game, but Tippett expects him to return this week. … C Frans Nielsen played in his 400th NHL game, all with the Islanders. Wholesale Jerseys From China . When you think teams you imagine a group of people who all shop at the same jersey store and move together in a large pack with a common goal, which is usually scoring goals. But at these Olympic Games the idea of becoming a team in figure skating makes perfect sense because of a new event called, shockingly, the Team Event. The teams official Twitter account quoted coach John Tortorella on Friday saying that Kesler “has a sprained knee and is out at least a couple of weeks”.RALEIGH, N.C. — Coach Kirk Muller and the rest of the Carolina Hurricanes are making the most of a makeshift lineup. Without No. 1 goalie Cam Ward and captain Eric Staal, the Hurricanes stretched their winning streak to a season-high four games with a 2-1 victory over the Nashville Predators on Sunday night. “Momentum is a big thing,” Muller said. Alexander Semin and Jeff Skinner both had a goal and an assist, and Anton Khudobin made 31 saves. Skinner netted the winner with 3:31 left on a shot from the right wing that slipped under goalie Carter Huttons pads for his team-leading 20th goal. He has scored six times during the winning streak. “Were just trying to keep this thing going right now,” Skinner said. “Were being consistent in our game and playing solid for all 60 minutes.” Patric Hornqvist had tied it for Nashville with a power-play goal at 6:46 of the third period when he tipped in the puck at the right post for his ninth goal. But the Predators, who had earned points in four straight games, dropped their third in a row. The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead on Semins goal 4:28 into the game. Semin gathered the puck from behind the net and sent a shot in off of Huttons back. Nashville coach Barry Trotz wasnt pleased with either goal allowed by Hutton. “I thought we really held them down to no chances,” Trotz said. “We got zero saves. (Skinners goal) wasnt much of a shot at all.” The Predators will now return to Nashville for a five-game homestand after an 0-3 trip. “We should have had five or six points out of this trip,” Trotz said. “We camee away with two, and thats discouraging.dddddddddddd We put ourselves in the position to get points, so we just need a save.” Staal sat out after he sustained a lower-body injury Saturday night in a win at the New York Islanders. He could be sidelined for a few more days. Nashville, which avoided its first shutout against the Hurricanes, held a 32-25 shots advantage. The Predators went 1 for 2 on the power play and killed Carolinas two man-advantages. Khudobin, filling in for Ward, improved to 5-0 this season and helped the Hurricanes win both ends of a back-to-back set for the first time this season. “It wasnt easy at all,” Khudobin said. “I was just doing my job, trying to stop the pucks. We know the situation right now with every game being important.” Khudobin started his third straight game after missing 33 because of an ankle injury. Muller said it was a risk to go back to him after Khudobins 38-save effort against the Islanders. “We took a chance, three in four nights for him, but hes been playing well,” Muller said. “We just went for it.” The Hurricanes, in their third game in four nights, played well without Staal in the lineup. Staal, who missed his first game since Feb. 26, 2011, had played in 191 consecutive regular-season games — the third longest streak in franchise history. He holds the team record of 349 straight games. NOTES: Skinner extended his point streak to five games. … The Hurricanes activated D Jay Harrison from the injured list and placed Ward on it, retroactive to Dec. 31. … Hornqvist moved into a tie for seventh place on the Predators career goal list. SAN DIEGO — Philip Rivers isnt going to get caught up trying to figure out what it will take for his San Diego Chargers to reach the playoffs. He just knows that if San Diego cant win its final two games — on the road, no less — its not going to matter. Rivers threw for one score and reached the 4,000-yard mark for the fourth straight season, Ryan Mathews ran for two scores and hit 1,000 yards rushing, and the Chargers won their third straight game, beating the playoff-bound Baltimore Ravens 34-14 on Sunday night. Unlike Joe Flacco and the Ravens, Rivers and the Chargers played as if they were post-season-bound. San Diego might not make it to the playoffs, though, because of an earlier six-game losing streak. “The one thing that stays true in all the scenarios is, we have to win our next two games,” Rivers said. “Lets just worry about us. If its not enough on Jan. 1, its not enough. But were going to go down fighting.” The Chargers (7-7) are tied with Oakland for second in the AFC West, a game behind Denver with two to play. Denver and Oakland both lost on Sunday. The Chargers finish with road games against Detroit and the Raiders. The Ravens (10-4) had their four-game winning streak snapped, but clinched a playoff berth earlier in the day thanks to losses by the New York Jets, Oakland and Tennessee. “Its a reality check,” said Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs, who was anything but the disruptive force that he has been in accumulating a career-high 13 sacks this season. “You dont show up to play in a game like this, youre going to get your (butt) whupped. Championship teams get on the road and keep playing — they peak — they dont take a step back.” Even though Ray Lewis was back with the Ravens after a four-game injury layoff, Baltimore only had two punishing hits on Rivers. Rivers was dominating, completing 17-of-23 passes for 270 yards to lead the Chargers to scores on six of their first seven possessions. He didnt throw an interception, and the only sack the Ravens got was wiped out on a personal foul against Suggs. “It was good to win a big game like this at home against a good team,” Rivers said. “It was a rough six-game stretch, but we hung tight together and fought our way back to .500 with two to play and were still alive.” Rivers joined Peyton Manning (1999-04 and 2006-10) and former teammate Drew Brees (2006-11) as the only QBs in NFL history with at least four-straight 4,000-yard seasons. Flacco got the treatment many thought Rivers would. Flacco was sacked five times — three by former Ravens linebacker Antwan Barnes — and intercepted twice. Overall, the Chargers had seven sacks, and Barnes finished with four. Chargers coach Norv Turner said it was San Diegos most complete game this season. “We are building on some things we have done over the last couple weeks,” he said. Turner said the Chargers have to “play as good as we can” to keep their playoff hopes alive. “Thats the only thing we can control. You obviously need some luck in the situation we are in.” Mathews gained 96 yards on 23 carries, including scores of one and three yards. Hes at 1,033 yards for the season. Rivers surpassed 4,000 yards on a 21-yard completion to Malcom Floyd that set up Mathews three-yard TD run late in the third quarter. The drive was set up when Takeo Spikes intercepted Flacco and returned it 45 yards to the Baltimore 27. The Chargers were flagged 15 yards for excessive celebration. “We did not play particularly well at all,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “I think the mistakes we made, they were able to capitalize on and turn them into points, especially early on. Were disappointed, but were moving on.” Nick Novak, who earlier kicked a 45-yard field goal for the Chargers, had a 37-yard attempt bounce off the right upright late in the third quarter. San Diego took the second-half kickoff and moved 80 yards, with Rivers throwing a perfect 28-yard TD pass to Floyd for a 24-7 lead. Mathews scored on a one-yard run and Novak kicked a 45-yard field goal to help the Chargers take a 17-7 halftime lead. Novak became the first Chargers kicker with 11 field goals of 40 yards or longer in a season when he booted his 45-yarder for a 10-7 lead. Rivers was sacked on the drive by Cory Redding for an eight-yard loss, but Suggs was whistled for a personal foul for head-slapping tight end Randy McMichael. Instead of a third-and-17 on their 27, the Chargers had a first down on the 50 after the 15-yard penalty. After forcing a Ravens punt, the Chargers moved 80 yards in seven plays. Rivers pitched to Mathews for a 1-yard TD run and a 17-7 lead. The key play was Vincent Jacksons 58-yard reception, which put him over 1,000 yards for the season. San Diegos Mike Tolbert scored on a two-yard run on San Diegos opening drive, and Flaccos 15-yard touchdown pass to Ed Dickson tied it early in the second quarter. NOTES: Chargers TE Antonio Gates had two catches, leaving him three shy of breaking Hall of Famer Charlie Joiners franchise record of 586. … San Diego linebacker Travis LaBoy hurt a knee. … It was the first time in franchise history — 254 games — that Baltimore allowed a team to score on its first five drives. … The Ravens allowed a season-high 34 points. . In fact, cranky would best describe the Celtics mood as they packed for a trip home to play Milwaukee on Wednesday. “It was a win, thats all it was for us,” Boston coach Doc Rivers said. MINNEAPOLIS — The shots were clanking and the frustration was mounting for J.J. Barea during a three-game shooting slump that was getting him booed off his home court with regularity. With the lowly Milwaukee Bucks hitting everything in sight, Minnesota coach Rick Adelman gave Barea some time with the Ricky Rubio in the same backcourt, and the throwback lineup helped jumpstart Barea and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Kevin Love had 27 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and Barea scored 19 points to lift the Timberwolves to a 112-101 victory over the Bucks on Tuesday night. After going 5 for his previous 25, Barea hit seven of 10 shots to help wake up the sluggish Wolves and Kevin Martin scored 26 points to help them finish a four-game homestand at 2-2. After carving a niche for himself in this league as a helter-skelter, mini-shooting guard who thrives when playing alongside a bigger point guard, roster limitations have forced Adelman to play Barea as a more prototypical backup point guard this season. But Milwaukee plays a smaller backcourt, which allowed Adelman the chance to pair Barea and Rubio. “I love it. I miss it,” Barea said. “I miss playing off the ball a little bit, especially with Ricky. When Im making shots, its great for our team.” Brandon Knight scored 21 points for the Bucks (13-51), who led at halftime and were looking for their first set of back-to-back victories this season. But after scoring 61 points in the first half and leading by 11 points in the second quarter, the Bucks were outscored 19-4 to start the fourth quarter. “Fourth quarter, we couldnt really get anything going,” said Bucks guard Nate Wolters, who had 14 points. “Weve had problems all year in the fourth quarter closing games. We gave ourselves a chance to win, having a lead going into the fourth, but just couldnt get it going and win.” Rubio had 11 points and 10 assists and three steals for Minnesota. “J.J.s a great scorer and sometimes he needs to play the (shooting guard),” Rubio said. “But its hard to do it when they have a (big) two. But I like playing with him. He made shots today and he played a lot.” The Timberwolves scored 30 points off of 15 turnovers by Milwaukee to offset some poorous defence that allowed the Bucks to shoot 52.dddddddddddd per cent. They trailed by six points at halftime, but Love and Dante Cunningham fueled the game-clinching run with a flurry of jumpers that pushed the lead to 105-88. “There was no pace and we let them get defensive stops,” said Bucks forward ZaZa Pachulia, who had a career-high 10 assists with nine points and six rebounds. “They are one of the best teams in transition and they got out in front of us and got easy buckets in transition. We just werent able to get back.” The Wolves (32-31) entered the game five games behind Memphis for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. In all likelihood, they kicked away their chance to make the post-season for the first time in 10 years with losses to the Knicks and Raptors earlier in this homestand. A loss to the worst team in the league at home surely would have ended any slim hopes that remained. The Bucks have been playing better basketball, at least offensively, since a trade last month brought Ramon Sessions and Adrien from Charlotte and sent disgruntled guard Gary Neal to the Bobcats. Even so, they were playing the second night of a back-to-back while the Wolves were playing their fourth straight game at home. The Bucks also were missing starting power forward Ersan Ilyasova because of a sore ankle. But as the Timberwolves have done all year long, they delivered a listless defensive effort to give their opponent life it had no business having. Milwaukee made its first 12 shots, the longest streak without a miss to open a game in the league this season, and shot over 71 per cent in the first quarter to jump out to a 33-22 lead. Barea made his first six shots in the second quarter, including a layup that tied the game at 49. NOTES: Wolters, from nearby St. Cloud, Minn., had a large contingent of fans who came both from his hometown and from South Dakota. Wolters starred in college at South Dakota State. … Timberwolves F Luc Richard Mbah a Moute hosted a dozen young fans from the south of France. The fans made plans to travel to the U.S. to see him play for Sacramento against New York. But Mbah a Moute was traded to Minnesota in December, so he picked up the tab to change their flights. PHILADELPHIA — Martin Brodeur has blanked all types of Flyers teams over two decades. He never had a shutout against one this bad. Brodeur was flawless in his 12th career shutout against Philadelphia, and Adam Henrique and Cam Janssen each scored goals to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 3-0 win over the Flyers on Thursday night. “Ive played the way I feel capable of playing, and I feel comfortable,” Brodeur said. “Ive been working hard in practice, knowing I dont get as many starts as I would like.” The Flyers beat the Devils 1-0 on Saturday in New Jersey. Henriques first-period goal would have been enough to stand in this one. Brodeur was never seriously challenged against the NHLs weakest offence and posted his 122nd career shutout. The Flyers have scored two goals in their last four games and have twice been shutout over that span. The anemic Devils havent been much better. They were blanked in their last two games, snapping the scoreless drought on Henriques goal only 1:57 into the game. Janssen scored in the third period. “Obviously the men went seven periods, and I think regardless of what you say, there are seeds planted in the back of your mind,” Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. “To get a break early like that, I think it relieved a little bit of pressure. I thought we played a really good road game.” Jaromir Jagr added an empty-netter with 1.3 seconds left. Both teams lived up to their billing as the worst offences in the NHL. The Devils entered next-to-last in the league with 27 goals while the Flyers were at the bottom with 22. The Flyers fell to a woeful 4-10-1 and held a closed-door team meeting for about 15 minutes. “Ive got to get them to play better, thats my job,” coach Craig Berube said. “Its not a hard game. Its about competitiveness and a will to win and to do all the little things right to win.” For as punchless as the Flyers offence has been, they were 52.3 seconds away from consecutive 1-0 wins after beating the Devils and holding a late lead against Carolina on Tuesday night. But the Hurricanes tied it in the final minute and won the game in overtime. The victory did make it another big night at the Wells Fargo Center for New Jersey owners Joshua Harris and David Blitzer. They bought the Devils in August, giving them duel ownership with the NBAs Philadelphia 76ers. The rebuilding Sixers stunned Miami and Chicago in the building last week. The Devils scored first when Eric Gelinas shot was deflected from the high slot by Henrique past Ray Emery. “We did a lot of things that we talked about; trying to get to those dirty areas and get those dirty goals,” Henrique said. Emery got the start after the 1-0 shutout win over the Devils on Saturday. He stopped 14 shots in the win and 22 on Thursday. Janssen redirected Adam Larssons shot early in the third for the 2-0 lead. Emery has only one win this season. “We definitely have the resolve, have the guys in the room that want to get it going and theyre willing to do whatever we have to, to get it going,” he said. The Flyers offence put almost no pressure on Brodeur, taking just six shots in the second period. He scored just his fourth NHL goal in 313 games. “He thinks he belongs here. Dont tell him that he doesnt belong here,” DeBoer said. “Thats just the attitude that he has, and people feel that. Hes a good kid. He takes care of himself, and he works really hard at the game, because he needs to. Its all good for him to be here.” Flyers centre Claude Giroux, the team captain, has not scored a goal in 15 games this season. Hes twice scored 25-plus goals and averaged a point-per-game in last years lockout-shortened season. He declined to talk to the media and met privately with team chairman Ed Snider. The Flyers were booed off the ice between each period by a crowd that thins out with each defeat. “You hear the boos,” Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds said. “That just means youre not doing your job. The fans react to what they see.” NOTES: Flyers F Steve Downie (concussion) did not play. … Brodeur has 47 wins against the Flyers. … The Flyers have lost seven of nine home games this season. … The Devils won for the second time in 10 road games. He just doesnt know when. The Cardinals and his agent are in the early stages of negotiations, Peterson said, with no timetable on reaching an agreement. One thing for sure — it will be a big deal. Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman just signed a four-year, $57 million contract with $40 million guaranteed. Peterson, a two-time All-Pro selection who has made the Pro Bowl in each of his three seasons in the NFL, wouldnt say whether his contract should be bigger than Shermans. But Peterson said he “kind of” had a smile on his face when he saw the terms of Shermans deal. He spoke Monday to announce a drive by his Patrick Peterson Foundation for Success to provide help to low-income and inner-city youth to have the resources they need to succeed. The foundations goal is to help 30,000 at-risk Arizona youth by 2015. A fundraising event, with his teammates serving at a local restaurant, is set for June 9. Peterson said that from the moment he became a professional football player, he decided his charity work would be aimed at helping children. Peterson congratulated Sherman on his contract and said the cornerback position has become a valuable one. “I think cornerbacks are definitely worth the dollars that they get because now this league is a passing league,” he said. “You need that shutdown corner to lock down one side of the field, or like myself, go out there the entire field.” Rather than play one side on defence, Peterson goes from side to side to defend the opponents best receiver. His skill and worth to the team may well drive his contract higher than Shermmans.dddddddddddd The Cardinals just picked up the option on Peterson for 2015, and hes not sure any deal will get done before the coming season. He knows the Cardinals are eager to keep him, though. “I think Ill be here for a while,” Peterson said. “Thats a definite guarantee, Ill be here for a while.” Coach Bruce Arians has said he wants to ease up on Petersons punt-return duties, and there is less chance he will be used on offence. Peterson tied an NFL record by returning four punts for touchdowns as a rookie but has not done it since. He said hes “cool” with Arians moves. “At the end of the day, I believe coach wants to put me in the best position that he can to keep me healthy, for one, and be successful,” Peterson said. “Teams are starting to game-plan against me. Youve got teams kicking it to the sidelines, not kicking it as deep as they did the week before.” Peterson likes the look of the secondary with the addition of cornerback Antonio Cromartie and last weeks selection of hard-hitting safety Deone Bucannon from Washington State, in the first round of the draft. Tyrann Mathieu, coming off knee surgery, is expected to fill the other safety spot with Rashad Johnson adding depth to the position. Peterson said he believes Cromartie “has a lot left in his tank.” “You hear a lot of talk Oh, can he stay healthy? Is his hip going to be OK?” Peterson said. “But talking to him he says this is the best hes felt since he first entered the NFL.” Bucannons addition drew a rave review from the star cornerback. “Im excited to see him fly around and knock off some chin straps — legally,” Peterson said. LONDON — Theyre still in their 20s, yet their rivalry is already one of the most heralded in mens tennis history. Rafael Nadal vs. Novak Djokovic has become a classic. The pair met for the first time at tour level seven years ago and, when they go head-to-head in the final of the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals on Monday, it will be for the 39th time. The Spaniard and the Serb have been dominant this season, with Nadal replacing Djokovic for the No. 1 ranking last month on the back of a stunning comeback from a career-threatening knee injury. “Whenever we play each other, its a huge challenge,” the 26-year-old Djokovic said. “This is the probably the most competitive tournament that we have after Grand Slams in our sport, and we both want to crown this season in the best possible way and end it with a title.” Djokovic extended his winning streak to 21 matches since losing in the U.S. Open final to Nadal when he beat Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. Nadal had earlier dispatched his old rival Roger Federer in straight sets. The worlds two highest-ranked players are unbeaten this week and have faced each other five times this season, with Nadal leading the 2013 meetings 3-2. After losing a set in each of his three previous matches, Djokovic raised his game on Sunday, making only 14 unforced errors as he broke Wawrinka four times. “The performance was definitely by far the best Ive had in the tournament,” said Djokovic, who is bidding for a third title at the elite, season-ending event and has been the best player of the indoor season. Nadal ended Federers hopes of finishing a disappointing season on a high note, defeating the six-time champion 7-5, 6-3. He leads Djokovic 22-16 in their career head-to-head record, although he lost their previous encounter last month in Beijing soon after regaining the top ranking. “After the U.S. Open final, I havent lost a match,” Djokovic said. "Im trying to take a lot of positive energy out of this confidence and out of this run. I won against him in the finals of Beijing in straight sets and I played a great match. I liked the way I improved in our matches. I like that I changed a few things that allowed me to win against him. Thats something that I will definitely try to use tomorrow. " Nadal, who claimed his first win over Federer on an indoor hard court, extended his winning career record over the 17-time Grand Slam winner to 22-10 and has now beaten the Swiss player on every surface. Federer had won their four previous matches at the ATP Finals, dropping only one set. “The most important thing for me is (that indoor) is the toughest surface for me to play,” Nadal said. “The most difficult for me was to be able to win four matches against top eight players. Its a very good way to finish the year.” Chasing his first title at the Finals, Nadal played down the importance of the victory over his greatest rival. “It is probably one of my best seasons,” said Nadal, who returned to the tour in February after a seven-month injury layoff. “The most satisfying thing is always (to win) the tournament more than the personal victories. So for me it is more important to be in the final in the last tournament of the year than to have the chance to win against Roger.” Since returning from injury, Nadal has won 75 matches —losing only 6 —to win 10 titles including the French Open, the U.S. Open and five Masters 1000 events. Federers season was very different. Hampered by a back injury, he won only one title in 2013 and was hoping to secure a major trophy before the year-end break. He played aggressively early on but faded after losing the first set, making too many mistakes to threaten the Spaniard. “In the beginning, his serve worked very well,” the 27-year-old Nadal said. “My feeling is that in the first set, he played very well. He was closer than me to have the break. So in my opinion until 4-all, he was playing better than me.” Nadal and Federer treated the O2 Arena fans to some superb exchanges early on, reminiscent of the classic matches that have punctuated their nine-year rivalry. But Nadal was much sharper on the important points, converting all four break points he earned. Federer had 32 unforced errors and made some uncharacteristic poor volleys. Federer, who beat Juan Martin del Potro on Saturday to qualify for the semis while Nadal had a rest day, also appeared to fatigue near the end. Federer failed to convert three break points in the sixth game before Nadal took advantage of his first opportunity to break for 5-4 with a superb forehand winner. Federer broke back immediately, but failed to build on the momentum. He dropped his serve in the very next game before conceding the set. He then struggled with his rhythm and was broken twice in the second set. “I struggled to stay consistent enough throughout the match, and thats why he deserved to win” Federer said. “This game is a game of making or missing your opportunities.” . The 10th match-up of the Round of 32 sees Jason Spezzas sweet hands square off against Jonathan Toews mittens in an outdoor game. Spezza eliminates the defender that blocks his path to the net by simultaneously going around and right through him. Forced to the boards coming over the blue line, Spezza proceeds to victimize Florida Panthers defender Dylan Olsen. Dangling to the outside, Spezza gets Olsen to bite before bringing the puck right past him and drives the net. Bringing it back to his forehand, he roofs a shot over top of Scott Clemmennsen for a tremendous individual effort.dddddddddddd Toews takes his act outdoors, but still displays some soft hands and a hot stick. In front of a packed house at Soldier Field, Toews fights neutral zone traffic and uses an outside-inside move to run right through Brooks Orpik. The falling snow is not enough to slow the shot as it squeaks between Marc-Andre Fleurys pads and trickles over the goal line. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Atlanta Hawks only needed one spectacular quarter to earn their first back-to-back wins of the season. Well, that and Al Horford. Horford had 13 of his 24 points in the third quarter as the Hawks outscored Charlotte 34-16 en route to a 103-94 win Monday night in Bobcats coach Steve Cliffords first game back after having two stents placed in his heart. “Energy, by far,” Horford said of the difference in the third quarter. “Especially on the defensive end. And we stopped fouling so much. At the beginning of the game we were really getting some cheap fouls. So, we did a better job defending them.” The Hawks trailed by eight at halftime but shot 72 per cent from the floor in the third quarter; the Bobcats managed just 33 per cent. Jeff Teague, who finished with 14 points and 12 assists, was pivotal during that stretch and Clifford said the Bobcats simply couldnt find anyone to guard him. “We came in the third quarter with absolutely no energy, and that was obviously the difference in the game,” Clifford said. Cartier Martin scored 16 points off the bench, including a pair of 3-pointers to help push the lead to 14. Horford finished 9 of 15 from the field; Martin was 5 of 7. Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer called it a good road win. “I think another step forward for our defence,” Budenholzer said. “I think a great job by our bench to come in and give us a boost. We had some foul trouble early and I think some guys just got picked up tonight by their teammates and by their bench.” Atlanta, which came in ranked seventh in the NBA in scoring, has reached at least 100 points in all seven games. Josh McRoberts led the Bobcats (3-4) with 19 points and seven assists. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 16 points, but none in the second half. Al Jefferson had 10 points and seven rebounds in his first game since Oct. 30. But its clear the Bobcats still havent adjusted to playing with their $41 million free-agent pickup. Jefferson looked slow and rusty and was a non-factor in the opening half with no points and one rebound in 10 minutes. Meanwhile, the offence was out of sync. McRoberts said it will take time for everyone to get used to playing with Jefferson. “Its just a different style of play playing through Al,” McRoberts said. “You try to work through growing pains. … There are probably guys in here who have never played with a low-post scorer in their entire careers, whether college or NBA. So its definitely a change having one of the best low-post players in the world down there in the block. We have to adjust and play through him.” Jefferson feels bad knowing that it hasnt been easy for his teammates to get used to his style of play with him being in and out of the lineup. He missed most of the preseason, too, with a sprained ankle. “Weve all got to get on the same page,” Jefferson said. Said Clifford: “Hes not in a great shape yet, and he played more minutes than I thought he would simply because we are better when hes on the floor.” The Bobcats certainly had their chance to erase a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter after the Hawks went cold from the field. But Charlotte couldnt get anything to fall, with McRoberts missing a pair of layups and leading scorers Gerald Henderson and Kemba Walker unable to get going. As for Clifford, he said he plans to obey doctors orders and not overdue it in his return to coaching. Clifford missed Charlottes game last Friday night against the New York Knicks after having two stents placed in his heart. “Im doing exactly what they tell me to do,” Clifford said before the game. “Im going to do a little bit less during the work day, come in just when the team is here. Im going to work out of the house more, sleep in for a couple of weeks and I think Ill be good. Ill be getting checked regularly. I think itll be fine.” NOTES: Kyle Korver has made at least one 3-pointer in 80 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in NBA history behind Dana Barros. … The Hawks have at least 24 assists in all seven games this season. They are first in the NBA in assists per game. … The Bobcats have lost two in a row at home after winning five straight. nfl jerseys china . After reports emerged on Tuesday that the Toronto FC midfielder would head to Vancouver on loan, the team confirmed on Wednesday that they had, in fact, traded for the Argentine designated player. SALT LAKE CITY — A game after he scored a career-high 43 points, nothing seemed to be going right for Paul George. Fighting a cold, his chest was burning and he couldnt seem to catch his breath. To make matters worse, his reliable shooting stroke was faltering. “It was so hard to find my wind but I didnt want to make any excuses. I tried to play through it and find a way to will us to a win tonight,” said George, who scored 19 points as the Indiana Pacers returned to their defensive ways in beating the Utah Jazz 95-86 on Wednesday. George and Pacers primarily did it with defence as they usually do. “We struggled but we stuck with what we do best,” said George, who had a key steal and dunk moments after the Jazz got within two points midway through the final period. “We made those guys take tough shots and, over time, those shots start to get a little short or a little long. Our defence played a huge part in us getting this win.” Lance Stephenson scored 15 points, Luis Scola had 14 and Roy Hibbert added 13 points to win in Utah for the first time since an 84-60 victory on Nov. 29, 2005. The Pacers were coming off their first back-to-back games of the season in which they allowed their opponent to reach 100 points — L.A. Clippers and Portland. But Indiana outscored the Jazz 27-19 in the fourth quarter and parlayed 14 Utah turnovers in 20 points. “They pushed us off our spots,” Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. “They put pressure on us a little bit and threw off our rhythm.” Gordon Haywards 3-pointer cut the Indiana lead to 79-76 before the Pacers scored nine straight points, capped by Wests 20-foot jumper that just beat the shot clock, and never looked back. “We made the better plays down the stretch. We got what we wanted, getting open shots because we executed in the fourth quarter,” West said. Derrick Favours led Utah with 22 points and 13 rebounds and Enes Kanter had 20 points and 10 boards for the Jazz, who had won three of their last four games. Hayward and George, who have worked out together in the summers and were picked ninth and 10th in the 2010 draft, both struggled with their shooting against each others tenacious defence. “Its always fun playing against Gordon because hes one of the few guys in this league that never lets up. I know I always have my hands full when I face him,” George said. When George finally made a 3-pointer — his firsst in eight attempts — with 53 seconds left, he paused and pointed skyward in relief at seeing one drop.dddddddddddd. “I pointed up to the basketball gods and thanked them. It was just a relief. I wasnt able to shoot the ball well and I was just fatigued out there,” said George, who finished 7 of 20 from the field after an acrobatic layup with 21 seconds remaining. Hayward made only 3 of 14 shots and finished with 12 points. “They are good defensively. They challenged a lot of shots at the rim and forced us to shoot over the top and we just couldnt knock them down,” Hayward said. Behind 10 points each from Kanter and Favours, the Jazz built an 11-point lead in the first half that evaporated to 48-47 by halftime. Led by Stephenson, the Pacers used an 18-4 run bridging the second and third quarters to move in front. The Pacers are the top defensive team in the league — holding opponents to 39.5 per cent shooting and 87.6 points per game — but they allowed the Clippers to score 100 points in a win and the Blazers 106 points in a loss on the current five-game road trip. “It was a really good win for our guys, kind of a grind-it-out type of game,” Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. Power forwards Marvin Williams (foot) and Jeremy Evans (flu) sat out the game for the Jazz but Utah attacked the Pacers for three quarters and led 69-68 after Kanters layup to open the fourth quarter. But the deeper into the fourth period they went, the more difficult it was for the Jazz to score. The Pacers disrupted the Jazz offensive sets and when Utah found open looks they misfired down the stretch. “The altitude and my asthma kicked me in the rear to begin with. But I got my second wind and I was trying to be a defensive presence,” said Hibbert, who blocked two shots and altered several others. The Pacers tough trip concludes with a back-to-back set against San Antonio on Saturday and Oklahoma City a day later. NOTES: Jazz rookie Trey Burke had a career-high nine assists. . Stephenson, upset with an offensive foul call in the fourth quarter, threw the ball over his shoulder and got a technical foul. . Kanter looked as if he threw Hibbert to the floor in the final two minutes but Hibbert gave a sly smile, indicating he may have helped sell the call. . Though he travelled with the team, Danny Granger has only played five games this season for the Pacers due to a strained calf and is still inactive. TORONTO — Toronto FC now has brainiac GM Tim Bezbatchenko to go along with up-and-coming manager Ryan Nelsen. The underachieving MLS team has a $20-million training centre that is the envy of the league, a fan base that has stayed remarkably loyal considering the dreck put in front of it, and an owner willing to spend more than US$25 million on two marquee designated players when the transfer window re-opens in January. There is salary cap space and allocation money to spend, not to mention some talent available to move. So is the dark age over for the 4-14-11 club, whose career league record is a woeful 49-102-66 going into Saturdays home game against Sporting Kansas City? “I do not think the dark days are over yet but I think there is a light at the end of the tunnel and we control our own destiny,” said Tim Leiweke, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. “And now we have to do the heavy lifting to get there by January so we could look everyone in the eye and tell them this is a different era here in this organization. Its not about flash, its not about spin. Its about hard work, tough decisions, spending some money and making the right decisions. I think well know that in January.” No stranger to navigating multibillion-dollar sports empires, Leiweke is used to being the smartest person in the room. The 31-year-old Bezbatchenko may give him a run for his money, although the new GM is undoubtedly too smart to make it too obvious. A lawyer with degrees from the University of Cincinnati and the University of Richmond, Bezbatchenko comes from the leagues inner circle. As senior director of player relations and competition at Major League Soccer, he was a young league insider with intimate knowledge of MLSs complicated legal landscape. His brief at the league — a single entity structure in which players are signed to the league rather than the team — was to oversee and manage six clubs budgets and rosters, among other things. And his group included Toronto FC. Bezbatchenko (pronounced bez-buh-CHENK-oh) clearly knows where the bodies are buried in MLS. Although Leiweke said exactly that about former president and GM Kevin Payne before firing him. Bezbatchenko, a native of Westerville, Ohio, played midfield for the second-tier Pittsburgh Riverhounds in 2004-05, joining MLS in 2010 after two years with the law firm Shearman & Sterling. Bezbatchenko was working in mergers and acquisitions at the law firm. Or as he explained, he was getting deal experience in buying and selling companies. “This is the same, but youre doing it with players,” he said of the move into soccer. Its not exactly a warm, fuzzy management approach. But top sports executives tend to be more ruthless than Ruth Buzzi. Bezbatchenkos job will be to help Nelsen get what he needs to continue the reconstruction of a moribund franchise. Leiweke has given an unqualified vote of confidence to Nelsen, saying the new GM would have to work with him in 2014. But it is clear that come January, if Nelsen gets the players he wants, the clock will be ticking on the manager. Should Nelsen ever depart the team suddenly, he no doubt has a book in him. He has quietly cleaned one mess after another at TFC while staying mostly mum. Leiweke made a point of noting that this is not rocket science. Hard work and good judgment are whats needed. “To be honest with you, this is not that difficult. Theres 11 slots and you need a couple of players per slot. And this is about filling in the boxes … And one thing that Ryan pointed out, and I think hes right, is its not like were 22 boxes away. Were four or five boxes away. A couple of those are DPs.” Those designated players are key, with Toronto eyeing international stars who can score goals while bringing some much-needed sizzle to the franchise. The team has pushed back the deadline for season ticket-holders to put their money down to January so they can see what progress has been made. Asked how long it takes to turn around an MLS team, Bezbatchenko smartly stepped around the crux of the matter. When pressed, he said it would be difficult to do it in one year “but our goal would be to have a nice upward trend over the next few years.” Spoken like a true suit. Much of the talk Friday was about business plans, the right course and analysis. Although Bezbatchenko worked himself into a verbal pickle when he talked about Toronto “not having a successful playoff run in, ah, well ever.” The club has never made the post-season in its seven seasons in the league. Some observers commented that Nelsen looked uncomfortable at the podium Friday, alongside Leiweke and Bezbatchenko. If so, it was likely because the former New Zealand international is more at home on the training field than in a suit — although he cleans up nicely. Nelsen, 35, is smart enough to know he needs someone who knows the league and can do the spadework to unearth the talent he wants. Bezbatchenko fits that bill. “This is kind of a Theo Epstein hire,” Leiweke said, referring to the baseball executive. Epstein, currently president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs, was 28 in 2002 when the Boston Red Sox made him the youngest GM in Major League Baseball history. Bezbatchenko, who is married with a one-year-old son, acknowledged his goal has been to become a GM. “Absolutely. Its the reason I went to law school,” he said. There is no shortage of grey matter in the Bezbatchenko household. His wife is in higher education with a PhD to her credit. Leiweke said while commissioner Don Garber was loathe to let Bezbatchenko go, he saw the bigger picture. The league needs to fix Toronto as a franchise once and for all. “He was in Toronto a couple of weeks ago and he went to the game and he saw whats going on here,” Leiweke said of a Sept. 11 tie with the Chicago Fire that drew a season-low crowd of 15,217. “I think he understands our pain … And he knew that we need a big, bold statement. And amazingly he sees this the same way we do. It wont be the biggest name in the business but it will be the best move we could have possibly made.” Bezbatchenko has also been a key figure in an MLS partnership with the French Football Federation that sees MLS youth academy coaches learn from the French model. Leiweke is a big believer in the role MLS academies can play, knowing if done right they can be a pipeline for cheap talent. Toronto canned Payne on Sept. 5 with Leiweke saying the two were no longer on the same page. Earl Cochrane, Paynes right-hand man and Torontos director of team and player operations, was also fired. Chief scout Pat Onstad subsequently left. Just minutes before Fridays announcement at BMO Field, pictures of Cochrane and Onstad remained on the wall outside the news conference room. But they were gone by the time it started. The team also wasted little time trading Argentine striker Maximiliano Urruti, Paynes prize acquisition, to Portland after just 37 minutes action in a Toronto uniform. For those wondering, Bezbatchenko grew up a Manchester United fan. He has since helped sign a Rooney, although unfortunately it was John — Waynes little brother. PITTSBURGH – Brandon Morrows MRI results are in and theyre not good. The 29-year-old felt something pop in his right index finger in the fifth inning of his Friday night start against the Pirates. He, and the Blue Jays, now know the cause: a torn tendon sheath. Hes been transferred to the 60-day disabled list. “If he heals up he should be back in July,” said manager John Gibbons. “If its not healing up theyll have to do surgery and hell be done for the year, probably.” The injury is the latest setback for Morrow in whats become a star-crossed career. After making 26 and 30 starts in 2010 and 2011, respectively, Morrow has been limited to only 37 appearances since the beginning of the 2012 season. In 2012, he began to show what the front office believes he could be, posting 10 wins, a 2.96 ERA and a 1.115 WHIP. An oblique strain cost Morrow more than two months that summer and while subsequent injuries, to his forearm and now his finger, were unrelated, it was a sign of things to come. The Blue Jays will select the contract of Marcus Stroman and hell be at PNC Park in time for Sundays series finale with the Pirates. Gibbons plans to begin with Stroman in the bullpen, although the 23-year-old acclimated well to his first taste of Triple-A baseball. Stroman is 2-2 with a 1.69 ERA, a 1.088 WHIP and 36 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings for the Buffalo Bisons this season. In his last start, Stroman struck out 10 and didnt allow a hit over six innings. At one point, he retired 16 consecutive Louisville Bats hitters. As for the starting rotation, Gibbons will send Dustin McGowan to the mound against the Pirates on Sunday. Left-hander J.A. Happ is scheduled to make his first start of the season on Monday in Philadelphia, followed by Drew Hutchison on Tuesday. Sending Morrow to the 60-day disabled list opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for Stroman. The Blue Jays still need to clear space for Stroman on the 25-man active roster. A corresponding move will be made before Sundays game. . There are surprises among the Vezina candidates, but most of the others are standard top-tier performers, even if the two Hart Trophy runners-ups have never been quite as good as they have been through the first half of the season. While there is much room for movement over the second half of the year, the Calder Trophy race might be the most volatile because no one has run away from the pack and when there are so many candidates close together, it gets easy to see big changes. Anyway, here are my picks for awards through first first half of this season: HART TROPHY Winner: Sidney Crosby, C, Pittsburgh Runners-up: Ryan Getzlaf, C, Anaheim; Patrick Kane, Chicago Comment: After what counted as a slump for him knocked Crosby to runner-up status through the first quarter, hes pulled away from the pack, leading the scoring race by nine points over Kane and 15 points ahead of Getzlaf who fit second and third, respectively. Scoring isnt everything, but all three have been on a roll through the first half of the season. Getzlafs shooting percentage (17.9%) and on-ice shooting percentage (12.0%) are a tad higher than his norm, but hes also shooting more than he has in the past and the results are there — his 20 goals already counts as his most since 2008-2009 and has him in easy range of surpassing his career-best of 25 goals. Kane has a strong supporting cast, of course, but hes on pace for a career-high in points and shots per game. Hes slumped in his last four games, but Kane has done enough to deserve consideration. If not Kane, Capitals RW Alex Ovechkin is worthy of consideration. His 31 goals is six more than anyone else, and while Ovechkin has an unsightly minus-17, his possession stats are solid and basically has bad puck luck when it comes to percentages. NORRIS TROPHY Winner: Duncan Keith, Chicago Runners-up: Erik Karlsson, Ottawa; P.K. Subban, Montreal Comment: Keith is having a season very similar to his 2009-2010 season, when he won the Norris Trophy, putting up dominant possession stats, but also contributing more offensively — his 42 points in 45 games (0.93 per game) represents the best per-game scoring rate of his career. Karlsson continues to be a game-changer offensively, and his possession numbers are more favourable than his minus-12 rating would suggest, but the percentages have not been playing in his favour through the first half of the season. Subban had a fantastic start to the year, but his play dipped some in December. Not enough to knock him from contention, but enough that hes closer to other contenders, like Nashvilles Shea Weber and St. Louis Alex Pietrangelo, than he is to Keith at this point. VEZINA TROPHY Winner: Ben Bishop, Tampa Bay Runners-up: Josh Harding, Minnesota; Tuukka Rask, Boston Comment: The 32 games that Bishop has played this season already counts as a career-high, so who knows where this is going (especially considering his injury on the weekend), but he leads in even-strength save percentage (.945) and has been an anchor for a team that has been playing without their top offensive threat for more than a quarter of the season. Harding was the early front-runner, but has only played two games in the past three weeks as he took time to adjust MS medication. That hes usurped Niklas Backstrom in net for the Wild is a story in itself, but Hardings numbers still have him right there with Bishop through the first half of the year. Rask is the more predictable option, the one goaltender that would have been considered a contender in the preseason because Rask is always turning in excellent wwork — his worst save percentage in the last five seasons was .dddddddddddd918 and this years .934 currently ranks as a career-high. There is plenty of time for other goaltenders to make their move. Montreals Carey Price, Torontos Jonathan Bernier and Colorados Semyon Varlamov are among those closest to the contenders. CALDER TROPHY Winner: Torey Krug, D, Boston Runners-up: Tomas Hertl, LW, San Jose; Seth Jones, D, Nashville Comment: With 23 points in 42 games, defenceman Krug is only three points behind Colorados Nathan MacKinnon, who leads the rookie scoring race. More than half of Krugs points have come on the power play, where hes running the point on the Bruins number one unit, but without any breakout forwards, Krug is the pick at the midpoint of the season. Hertl was the leading candidate, even if he slowed down from his tremendous start, but hes already missed more than two weeks since taking a knee-on-knee hit from the Kings Dustin Brown and hes still going to be on the shelf for the forseeable future. Jones had a strong case early in the year, then his game fell off and his ice time was reduced dramatically. Hes working his way back up lately, enough to get a runner-up nod, though not far ahead of the competition. MacKinnon is starting to pick up offensively, and injuries in Colorado are opening up more opportunities. Others of note include Rangers LW Chris Kreider, Jets D Jacob Trouba, Kings RW Tyler Toffoli, Panthers C Aleksander Barkov and Stars RW Valeri Nichushkin, who could be in the best position of all if he can stick on the wing with Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin on the Stars number one line. SELKE AWARD Winner: Jonathan Toews, Chicago Runners-up: Patrice Bergeron, Boston; David Backes, St. Louis Comment: Its a familiar group, with Toews and Bergeron the last two winners. They simply excel as two-way players, typically dominating possession even when they face elite competition. Backes isnt far behind, either. Hes a beast to play against, handles tough assignments like Bergeron and Backes is probably getting a little more notice this season because hes been running alongside Alexander Steen for most of the year. Steen would be a candidate too, but thats because hes always a sound two-way player, not because of his goal-scoring explosion, and Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog has such a strong two-way game that he has a chance to work his way into consideration, which isnt easy for a winger. JACK ADAMS AWARD Winner: Bruce Boudreau, Anaheim Runners-up: Ken Hitchcock, St. Louis; Todd McLellan, San Jose Comment: Its always difficult to narrow down the best coaching jobs, but the Ducks have been so good that some credit should go to Boudreau, who is not only getting the most out of his superstars, but also the supporting cast. The St. Louis Blues play such a grind-it-out style of game that its a testament to the coaching of Ken Hitchcock that they stick with it, and they have one of the leagues best records despite what has been merely decent goaltending. Same goes for San Jose and coach Todd McLellan, who is succeeding without great numbers from his tenders and has done some line juggling to incorporate younger options. A couple of other viable candidates — Colorados Patrick Roy and Tampa Bays Jon Cooper — have had such strong goaltending that I have a hard time separating that from the team success. Theyre worthy, but would they be worthy if their goalies werent great? Scott Cullen can be reached at Scott.Cullen@bellmedia.ca and followed on Twitter at http://twitter.com/tsnscottcullen. ARLINGTON, Texas — The Toronto Blue Jays lead the major leagues in extra-base hits and they used an effective combination of those to beat the Texas Rangers 4-2 on Saturday night and put themselves in position to move into first place in the American League East. Eighth-inning doubles by Kevin Pillar and Jose Reyes produced the go-ahead run. Doubles by Anthony Gose and Brett Lawrie also played roles in runs. Jose Bautista opened the scoring with a first-inning home run. Toronto has won four straight and 10 of its last 14 to move within a half-game of Baltimore and the Yankees for first-place in the AL East. “Weve got a quality team,” said Bautista, who had two hits and reached base in all five plate appearances. "When we execute like we have the last couple of games, we do well. “We have a lot of guys who have been around and have had success. We have to keep coming out and executing.” Right-hander Steve Delabar (3-0) retired four straight, including striking out the side in the eighth, to earn the victory. The save by right-hander Casey Janssen was his third of the season and 19th straight in save situations going back to last year. Bautistas homer was his 179th with Toronto, tying him with Jesse Barfield for fifth place in club history. The Blue Jays broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh when Gose, a speedster called up Thursday from Triple-A Buffalo when Colby Rasmus went on the disabled list, led off by legging out a double to left, stole third and scored on Melky Cabreras chopper to third. “He wants to be here, and hes showing he belongs,” Jays manager John Gibbons said of Gose. “Guys who do what he does constantly put pressure on the opponent.” Jays starter Mark Buehrle was denied his major league-leading eighth victory. He allowed two runs over 6 2-3 innings. His ERA rose to 2.11 and his road ERA went up to 1.00. Buehrle had six assists, many of which had teammates telling him he threw harder to first base. “I dont know if I say in my mind I know Ive got to kind of let it loose,” Buehrle said. Pillar hit a cue shot down the right-field line off left-handed reliever Neal Cotts (1-3). Reyes two-out dunker into right off Cotts scored Pillar. Texas has lost four straight and six of its last seven to fall seven games behind first-place Oakland in the AL West. Michael Choices third-inning RBI single to left tied the score and ended Texas scoreless streak at 15 innings. “Ive been through struggles as a player, as a coach and as a manager,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said. “I have to lead and come out positive every day.” Texas starter Robbie Ross lasted only 4 1-3 innings. In the Rangers last 18 games, they have gotten three quality starts — all from Yu Darvish. Rangers first baseman Prince Fielder sat out with a herniated disk in his neck, ending his consecutive games streak at 547. Fielder received a nerve-root injection on Saturday morning to alleviate pain that he has felt since last season and, according to Texas general manager Jon Daniels, causing weakness in his left arm. The Rangers hope Fielder can return to the lineup on Tuesday. One of the 13 Rangers currently on the disabled list, left-hander Martin Perez, confirmed before the game that he will undergo Tommy John surgery on Monday. NOTES: Recently retired Michael Young, a seven-time All-Star with the Rangers, was honoured before the game. … With Toronto C Dioner Navarro returning from the bereavement list, RHP Neil Wagner was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. … RH reliever Justin Germano, designated for assignment by Texas on Wednesday, cleared waivers and is deciding whether to accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Round Rock. First reported by FOX Sports Ken Rosenthal, its unknown if the impetus for the deferral proposal came from players or management, but it never left the preliminary stages.ALAMEDA, Calif. — Less than three years after being one of the most prized free agents on the open market, Nnamdi Asomugha NFL career is over. Asomugha formally announced his retirement Friday at the Oakland Raiders headquarters, ending his 11-year career at the place he had his most success. “Im just grateful to be back, grateful for everything to go full circle,” Asomugha said. “For all of the achievements and awards, to be able to retire as a Raider ranks highest among all of those.” Asomugha made three Pro Bowls and was a two-time first-team All-Pro during his eight seasons with the Raiders when he was considered one of the leagues top cover cornerbacks. But his career quickly fizzled after signing a $60 million, five-year contract with Philadelphia in the summer of 2011. He was cut after two years with the Eagles and played just three games this season for San Francisco before being released in November. He said he had opportunities to come back since then but felt the time was right to go on with the rest of his life. Asomugha was joined at his retirement news conference by three of the Raiders best defensive backs: Hall of Famer Willie Brown, Lester Hayes and Charles Woodson. Asomugha credited all three, along with others like Rod Woodson and Mike Haynes for his transformation from a college safety to an elite NFL cornerback. “He turned into what they call that shut-down corner,” Woodson said. “People just decided going into the game they werent going to throw at him. Thats a testament to his hard work.” Asomugha came into the NFL as a first-round pick out of California in 2003 and became one of the rare Al Davis first-rounders to pan out in his later years running the Raiders. After taking a few years to adjust to playing cornerback after being mostly a safety in college, Asomugha thrived in the Raiderrs system that often left cornerbacks alone on an island matched up man-to-man against opposing receivers.dddddddddddd “When I first came into the league not too many people really knew who I was,” Asomugha said. “When I first got here I was definitely called a reach. In great Al Davis fashion, he took a reach that he believed in and instilled confidence in me like nobody else could and I was able to become all that he expected of me.” Asomugha had a breakthrough season in 2006 when he intercepted eight passes and was a rare bright spot on a 2-14 team. By the next season, opposing quarterbacks rarely even threw the ball his direction. In his final four seasons with the Raiders, Asomugha had just 136 passes thrown at him in 60 games, allowing just 66 completions and only two touchdowns. Asomugha was paid well for his performance in Oakland, earning $9.5 million in 2008 and then signing a $45.3 million, three-year deal the following off-season. That contract voided after his second year and he became one of the most prominent free agents after the lockout ended in 2011. After never playing on a winning team in his eight seasons in Oakland, Asomugha joined the Eagles in what was billed as the “dream team.” But he never fit in to a system that had him playing zone coverage instead of being exclusively in man-to-man. Philadelphia was one of the leagues most disappointing teams in his two seasons there, going 12-20 and missing the playoffs both times. Asomugha signed a minimum contract with the 49ers last off-season but made one start and played three games before being released, meaning he will end his career having never made the playoffs. “We didnt get a championship, that was the goal,” Asomugha said. “But we had a lot of championship moments here and thats the stuff I can be proud of moving forward.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’

WASHINGTON — D.C. United has added former Canadian international Enzo Concina as an assistant coach. Concina comes on board via the MLS teams partnership with Italys Inter Milan. “Enzo will add a wealth of experience and knowledge to our staff,” D.C. United head coach Ben Olsen said in a statement. “We are extremely pleased that he has joined our coaching staff.” Concina will remain on Inters books as a scout during his time with United. Reportedly filmed on September 30, 2013 at 3 a.m., the video below was posted to YouTube yesterday, and it shows a group of daredevils who somehow gained access to the tower, climbed the stairs up to the 105th floor roof deck, and plunged gracefully back down to the mean streets of Lower Manhattan. The video slowly builds the suspense for about two and a half minutes before the first guy jumps, and when the B.A.S.E. jumper with the GoPro camera makes his leap, the result is downright breathtaking. Of course, the four men involved in the B.A.S.E. jump made it to the ground unscathed, but they wont escape the long arm of the law. The New York Daily News reports that the four men have been charged with burglary, reckless endangerment, and “jumping from a structure.” . MILAN, Italy — Carlos Tevez scored his first hat trick for Juventus to help the Serie A leader crush Sassuolo 4-0 on Sunday and reinforce its bid for a third successive league title. Federico Peluso scored the other goal as Juventus bounced back from its midweek Champions League exit in emphatic fashion, with its eighth successive league win and clean sheet. “What emotion do I feel after the hat trick? The only emotion is that of winning a match which was very difficult after we were knocked out of the cup,” Tevez said. "We are a very strong squad mentally and we showed that today. “We talked after the Galatasaray match. Weve paid for our mistakes against Copenhagen and in the first part of the Champions League. Now we have three other titles to go for: league, Italian Cup and Europa League. Well try to get all three.” Juventus moved provisionally six points clear of Roma, which visits AC Milan on Monday. Napoli is two points further back after also getting over Champions League disappointment with an entertaining 4-2 win over 10-man Inter Milan. “Today was like a final for us, we wanted to win it and we did so,” Gonzalo Higuain said. “It was a very important match, Im delighted with the victory. Inter is now seven points behind us, Fiorentina still has five points less and we are closer to Roma.” Earlier, Fiorentina leapfrogged Inter into fourth spot after a comfortable 3-0 win over Bologna, while Lazio beat Livorno 2-0. Elsewhere, it was: Chievo Verona 0, Sampdoria 1; Genoa 1, Atalanta 1; Parma 0, Cagliari 0; and Udinese 0, Torino 2. Juventus had lost at Galatasaray on Wednesday in a game that was pushed back a day because of snow. Because of that the league match was moved to Sunday, with 9,000 children in attendance as one of the stands behind the goal was still closed to the ultras following anti-territorial chants. Tevez grabbed his first in the 15th minute, firing in the rebound after Arturo Vidals effort had been saved by Gianluca Pegolo. The Argentina striker turned provider in the 28th with a free kick which Peluso headed in for his first league goal for Juventus. Tevez doubled his tally on the stroke of halftime, pouncing on an error from Lino Marzorati before rounding the onrushing Pegolo and slotting into an empty net. And Tevez — who scored a hat trick for Manchester City earlier this year — completed his treble in the 69th minute, starting the move and finishing it when Mauricio Isla rolled the ball across for him to tap in from six yards. Tevez was substituted moments later to a standing ovation. In Naples, coaches Walter Mazzarri and Rafa Benitez both faced their former teams and it was the latter who emerged victorious. Higuain, who had scored in the ultimately meaningless 2-0 win over Arsenal midweek, opened the scoring for Napoli in the ninth minute with a delightful volley after Yuto Nagatomo headed a clearance straight at the Argentine. Esteban Cambiasso levelled in the 35th but Dries Mertens restored Napolis lead almost immediately before Blerim Dzemaili added a third three minutes later when Samir Handanovic could only get a hand to Mertens shot. Nagatomo atoned for his earlier error to reduce the deficit in first-half stoppage time but the match swung back Napolis way in the 72nd minute when Ricardo Alvarez was sent off following a second yellow card for handball. Jose Maria Callejon sealed the match nine minutes from time with a simple finish. Napoli almost scored a fifth but substitute Goran Pandev had a penalty saved by Handanovic after he was tripped by Andrea Ranocchia immediately after coming off the bench. It was Napoli second win in five league matches. Earlier, Josip Ilicic scored his first goal in eight months before Borja Valero and Serie As leading scorer Giuseppe Rossi sealed the win for Fiorentina. The American-born Rossi, who plays for the Italian national team, is the top scorer in Serie A with 13 goals, three more than Tevez. In Rome, Miroslav Klose netted twice in the Germans first start in a month for Lazio following a shoulder injury to help Lazio to its first league win since Oct. 27. Livorno remains a point off 17th-placed Sassuolo and safety, with Bologna a point further back. Chievo Verona had been in fantastic form and won its three games since firing coach Giuseppe Sannino and rehiring Eugenio Corini. However, Sampdoria had also turned things around since changing coaches and was unbeaten under Sinisa Mihajlovic. Eder heading a corner into the top right in the 16th minute. It was the first goal Chievo had conceded in five matches going back to Oct. 31. Samp moves above Chievo and level on points with Udinese after second-half goals from Alexander Farnerud and Ciro Immobile helped Torino to its first win in Udine in 29 years. Torino moved into seventh spot, two points above both Lazio and Genoa. Andrea Bertolaccis 72nd-minute strike looked to have given Genoa victory but Giuseppe De Luca levelled for Atalanta deep into stoppage time. LONDON — The draw for Wimbledon was relatively kind to defending champion Andy Murray. It was a lot more daunting for top-ranked Rafael Nadal. Murray, who last year became the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936, was drawn Friday to open the defence of his title against 104th-ranked David Goffin of Belgium, who will be playing in the main draw of the grass-court tournament for only the third time. Eighth-seeded Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., will face Matthew Ebden of Australia in the first round and could meet Nadal in the quarter-finals, while Vancouvers Vasek Pospisil, the No. 31 seed who is in top-seeded Novak Djokovics section of the draw, faces Dutchman Robin Haase. Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., who lost in the qualifiers but entered the main draw as a lucky loser, opens against No. 29 seed Ivo Karlovic of Croatia. In the womens draw, top-ranked and five-time champion Serena Williams is in the same quarter as French Open champion Maria Sharapova. The two could face each other in the quarterfinals. No. 13 seed Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., who made the semifinals at the French Open earlier this month, is also in the same section as Williams and Sharapova. She opens against Slovak veteran Daniela Hantuchova while Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., takes on 10th-seeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova. Torontos Sharon Fichman will face Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland. The third-seeded mens doubles team of Torontos Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia will open against the Italian duo of Andreas Seppi and Paolo Lorenzi. In womens doubles, Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa and Alicja Rosolska of Poland will play the 13th-seeded team of Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic and Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands. Murray, who is seeded third this year, has admitted he does not know how he will cope with the pressure of walking onto Centre Court as the defending champion on Monday. At least he has a relatively smooth path in the draw until the quarterfinals, where he could play seventh-seeded David Ferrer or Grigor Dmitrov, who won last weeks warm-up at Queens Club. Then looms a potential semifinal against top-seeded Novak Djokovic — a rematch of last years final. “It will be a proud moment to come back as defending champion,” said Murray, who is now coached by former Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo after parting ways with Ivan Lendl earlier this season. “I dont know how I will feel, I have no idea. Im sure I will be nervous and feel some pressure, but Ill try to enjoy it. Its a new experience for me.” For Nadal, its a lot trickier. The Spaniard, who holds two Wimbledon titles, has not fared well on the grass the past two years, losing in the second round in 2012 and the first round last year. Hes also coming off a loss in his first match at the Halle grass-court tournament. The top-ranked Nadal, who is seeded No. 2, will start against No. 57 Martin Klizan of Slovakia. The Spaniard, who won his ninth French Open title earlier this month, could then face Lukas Rosol, who beat him here two years ago. Nadal, the only man with at least one Grand Slam title in 10 consecutive years, could then be pitted against big-serving Ivo Karlovic in the third round. Waiting in the quarterfinals could be another big hitter — eighth-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada. Fridays draw put Murray in the top half with Djokovic, who won Wimbledon in 2011. Nadal is in the bottom half with seven-time champion Roger Federer. Federer will start against Paolo Lorenzi of Italy and Djokovic will play his first match against Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan. Djokovic could meet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the fourth round and former finalist Tomas Berdych in the last eight. Federer, who has lost before the quarterfinals at three of the last four Slams, might face third-ranked and Davis Cup teammate Stan Wawrinka in an all-Swiss encounter in the quarters. Sharapova, who defeated Serena Williams in the 2004 final at the age of 17 to win her only Wimbledon title and first Grand Slam championship, will open against Samantha Murray. Williams will take on Anna Tatishvili. If Williams and Sharapova get to the quarterfinals, it will set up their 19th career meeting. Williams leads 16-2 and has not lost to her Russian rival since the 2004 WTA Championships. The other potential womens quarterfinals are: Simona Halep vs. Jelena Jankovic, Victoria Azarenka vs. Agnieszka Radwanska, and Petra Kvitova vs. Li Na. Williams is coming off a second-round loss at the French Open, where Sharapova won her fifth major title. After Williams previous early exit at the French Open in 2012, when she lost in the first round, she went on to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Sharks got a spark from an unusual place and turned a close game into another laugher against Jonathan Quick and the Los Angeles Kings. Fourth-liners Mike Brown and Raffi Torres scored second-period goals to erase an early two-goal deficit and the Sharks rolled to a 7-2 victory Sunday over the Los Angeles Kings and a 2-0 lead in their first-round series. “They got us going and everybody followed,” coach Todd McLellan said. “You need that to have success. Success has only been two games. Weve got a lot left. But you need to have everybody stirring the drink if you will.” Justin Braun, Patrick Marleau, Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture and Joe Thornton also scored for the Sharks, who overcame a two-goal deficit after the first period of a playoff game for just the third time in 26 tries in franchise history. Antti Niemi made 24 saves. The Sharks matched a franchise playoff record with seven goals in a game and have 13 goals through two games after managing just 10 in a seven-game loss to Quick and the Kings last year. “Hes probably the best goalie in the league, so to do that two games in a row, its an oddity,” Thornton said. “Weve been working hard for our goals and the fourth line got this game back in our grip for us, but scoring seven … just a weird night.” Jake Muzzin and Trevor Lewis scored first-period goals before Quick allowed seven goals in the final two periods. Los Angeles heads home for Game 3 on Tuesday looking to get back into this series. The Kings can take comfort in the fact that the home team has won 18 of the previous 19 games between these teams, including nine in the playoffs. Los Angeles also overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first round against St. Louis last year, but those were one-goal games instead of blowouts. “I wouldnt exactly call it new,” captain Dustin Brown said. “We were in the same situation last year. We came up here twice and didnt get anything that we wanted. … Now we go home and we take care of our home ice.” The Kings appeared poised to steal home-ice advantage when they scored twice in the first period and Quick responded after allowing five goals in two periods of a 6-3 loss in Game 1 on Thursday. But the Sharks seized momentum inn the second period thanks to a decision to drop Pavelski to the third line and a spark from the fourth line.dddddddddddd Known for their ability to deliver hard hits and get into fights, the line of Andrew Desjardins, Torres and Brown has set the tone for the Sharks this series. Brown pushed Slava Voynov into Quick early in Game 1 and Torres added a goal in that contest. They came through even more in Game 2 with Brown scoring his first career playoff goal on a quick shot from the slot after a turnover by Kyle Clifford to get the Sharks on the board early in the second. Midway through the period, Desjardins dropped a perfect pass to Torres, who beat Quick up high for the equalizer. Torres missed the final six games of last years series for a hit to the head of Jarret Stoll, but has made his impact felt so far in the rematch. “Any time the fourth line contributes with goals its always a bonus,” Mike Brown said. “For us to put in a few here, its great for the team, its great for the guys to kind of know they have that depth in the fourth line that we can contribute.” The Sharks took the lead late in the period when Braun beat Quick with a shot from the point through a screen by Tommy Wingels. Marleau, Pavelski and Couture turned it into a blowout with goals off odd-man rushes in the third before Thornton scored a power-play goal. “If were not playing the way were supposed to, having the coverage were supposed to then those types of things are going to happen,” defenceman Robyn Regehr said. “Weve really got to clean that up in a hurry.” The Kings were undisciplined in the final period, most notably when Mike Richards speared Couture. “He got me pretty good, a full-on spear right in front of the ref so well see what happens,” Couture said. NOTES: San Joses only other playoff comebacks from two goals down after the first period were on April 23, 1994, against Detroit, and April 19, 2011, against Los Angeles. The Sharks trailed that game to the Kings 3-0 after one and 4-0 in the second before rallying for a 6-5 overtime win. … … The Sharks beat Colorado 7-3 on April 30, 1999. … The Kings scratched F Jordan Nolan in place of a seventh defenceman, Matt Greene, who was on the ice for four San Jose goals. LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers confirmed Byron Scott is their new coach Monday night. The Lakers finally made the long-anticipated announcement in a news release. Scott will be introduced at a news conference Tuesday at the Lakers training complex. Scott told reporters last weekend he had been hired by the Lakers, who have been without a coach since Mike DAntoni resigned April 30. Scott is the 25th head coach in the 16-time NBA champions franchise history. General manager Mitch Kupchak said he conducted “an extensive and thorough search” with owner Jim Buss. “Were proud to welcome Byron back to the Lakers family as our next head coach,” Kupchak said. “Byron has proven himself at the highest levels of the game as both a player and a coach in his almost 30 years of NBA experience. His leadership skills and track record for success make him the ideal person to lead this franchise forward.” Scott is 416-521 as a head coach for New Jersey, New Orleans and Cleveland, reaching two NBA Finals with the Nets. He has won three division titles, and he was the NBAs coach of the year in 2008. Scott also was a shooting guard for the Lakers for 11 seasons, playing alongside Magic Johnson during the Showtime era. He was a teammate of Lakers star Kobe Bryant during his final NBA season, and Bryant has endorsed Scott for his new job. “I am ecstatic to once again be a Laker and to have the opportunity to work alongside Mitch and the Buss family,” Scott said. “I know firsthand what it takes to bring a championship to this city, and as someone who both grew up in L.A. and played the majority of my career here, I know how passionate and dedicated our fans are. I will give everything I have to fulfil the championship expectations that our supporters have for us, and that we have for ourselves.” Scott spent last season as an analyst on the Lakers television network, watching their disintegration during a 55-loss season, the most in franchise history. Bryant played just six games last season. The Lakers interviewed several coaching candidates over the past three months, including Lionel Hollins and George Karl. Scott has been widely considered the front-runner for the job since early summer, but Kupchak and Buss appeared to be more focused on the NBA draft and free agency than their current teams leadership. Justin Dowling, Travis Morin and Francis Wathier also scored for the Stars (22-10-5), who bypassed Abbotsford for top spot in the West Division, and Mike Hedden tacked on two assists. Mays Draft will see underclassmen enter, forgoing their senior years with hopes of being picked into the pros. How comfortable are you with your team picking an underclassman in the draft? The top of the draft is dominated by names like Teddy Bridgewater, Jadeveon Clowney, Johnny Manziel, Tre Mason, Sammy Watkins, HaHa Clinton Dix and Blake Bortles – all underclassmen. Some would say its to the benefit of these players to stay in school and work on their craft while at the same time pursuing their degrees. However, declared underclassmen do meet the NFLs three-year eligibility rule, with some leaving school as just red-shirted sophomores. Would you prefer your team invest a draft pick on a prospect who isnt an early entry? Teams have being willing to take chances on non-seniors in the past. In the last three drafts, an average of 72 per cent of the underclassmen who declared were drafted. Last seasons draft saw a then-record 73 players forego ttheir eligibility.dddddddddddd While only 52 of them were selected, there were 15 picked in the first round. Of those first-rounders, just four started all 16 games, including Eric Reid, Justin Pugh, Deandre Hopkins, and Alex Ogletree. At every position there are as many cases where it has worked for an underclassman to declare as there are instances where it hasnt. Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell serves as an example of the negative in coming out early. After coming to the NFL after his junior season at LSU, he lasted only 31 games in the league, and has not played an NFL snap since 2009. On the flip side, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck also came out as a junior, and already has two playoff appearances in as many seasons. With this, would you rather your team spend a draft pick on a player who stayed in school to work on his skills in the NCAA? Or are you fine with your team taking a risk and selecting a player looking to come into the league early, perhaps still a little raw? As always, its Your! Call. COLUMBUS, Ohio — Luke Moore assisted on what he hoped would be the winning goal by Jonathan Osorio. But, after the Columbus Crew tied the match in the 81st minute he had to do a little extra. Moore headed in a corner kick by Collen Warner in the 84th minute to give Toronto FC a 3-2 win against Columbus on Saturday. Moores goal was the last of three scores in the final 31 minutes and gives Toronto a sweep of the three-game season series against the Crew. “They defend well in the box. They counter well and (have) set pieces,” Columbus coach Gregg Berhalter said. “Those three components gave us trouble in all three games.” It was the latter that proved to be the difference. Moores fifth goal of the season came under duress. He was blanketed by Crew forward Aaron Schoenfeld but still managed to direct the ball past goalkeeper Steve Clark. “It happened quickly,” Moore said. “It was a great ball by Collen. It had enough pace on it. I think the keeper misread it.” Gilberto gave Toronto (9-7-5) a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute off a pass from Moore, but the Crew got the equalizer in the second minute of first-half stoppage time on a penalty kick by Federico Higuain. “The first half we created so many chances to put the game to bed,” Toronto coach Ryan Nelsen said. “We just didnt take them and then the penalty gave them a big boost, especially the timing of it. We knew they were going to come out invigorated by that.” Toronto took a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute with Moore the catalyst. He challenged Clark in the box but was denied. The ball bounced off Moore to an unmarked Osorio for the easy goal, his second of the season. Columbus (6-8-9) made it 2-2 when Justin Merams long cross ended up skipping past goalkeeper Joe Bendik as he was distracted in front by Schoenfelds try for the ball. Toronto was undeterred and Moores score gave the Reds five goals in the past two games despite the absence of leading scorer Jermain Dafoe (11 goals), who is expected to miss two to three more weeks because of a groin injury. “The mentality of this team is strong,” Toronto midfielder Michael Bradley said. “We need to be a little more consistent. To do that we need to be a little more ruthless and determined to walk off fields every week with points.” Nelsen is encouraged by the play of Gilberto, the Designated Player from Brazil in his first MLS season. On his goal, Moore found Gilberto drifting wide on the left flank. Gilberto had the angle on Crew defender Giancarlo Gonzalez, a starter for Costa Rica at the 2014 World Cup, and beat Clark with pin-point accuracy for his fourth goal. “Every game Gilberto is getting better,” Nelsen said. “We knew Gilberto was finding out the league. It takes the foreign guys a wee bit of a while. He was injured all pre-season so he kind of started a few yards back of everybody else. Hes catching up.” The Crew were able to tie the score 1-1 when Justin Morrow was called for a handball, but TFC battled back. “It shows we can win at any place, including Columbus, which is a very difficult place to play,” Nelsen said. “We havent had much success here ever so to win here twice (this season) is obviously very big.” Toronto next plays at Sporting Kansas City on Aug. 16. .ca Fantasy Editor Scott Cullen, NFL Editor Ben Fisher, and Isaac Owusu discuss three hot fantasy football topics. HOUSTON — The Houston Rockets seemed to be rolling in the first half against New Orleans, shooting well and building a double-digit lead. Luis Scola knew better. “We werent executing the right way,” the Rockets forward said. “They came back, and thats what happens when you dont play good.” Houston survived one of the worst fourth quarters in team history to hold off the Hornets 90-88 in overtime on Thursday night. Kevin Martin scored 27 of his 32 points in the first half, Samuel Dalembert grabbed a season-high 17 rebounds and the Rockets won their fifth straight game. Barely. “It just looked like the life was out of us,” Martin said. “But we found a way to pull out that one.” Courtney Lee scored a season-high 17 points and Kyle Lowry added 10 points and eight assists for the Rockets, who shot 3 for 21 from the field in the fourth quarter and mustered 7 points, matching a team record set three times previously. Martin hit 10-of-14 shots in the first half, then went 2 for 6 in the fourth as the Hornets rallied to tie it. “I always tell them, Give the fight and do your best,” New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. “We did everything we could to win the game.” Jason Smith scored 17 points and Jarrett Jack and Marco Belinelli added 15 points apiece for the Hornets, whove lost 12 of 13. But the players on New Orleans bench went nuts when Jack swished a baseline jumper with 3:47 left in overtime to give the Hornets their first lead, and Smith hit one from nearly the same spot to put the Hornets up 86-83. Jack scored again before Dalembert converted a three-point play. Scola sank two free throws to tie it with 1:10 remaining. Martin picked up a loose ball with under 30 seconds left and missed a layup on a fast break, but Dalembert grabbed the rebound and dunked with 11 seconds left. “We put ourselves in that situation,” Dalembert said. “We dug ourselves so deep that we had to dig ourselves out. And we did it.” Belinelli missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, and Houston escaped to beat the Hornets for only the second tiime in the last eight meetings.dddddddddddd “Im only taking positives from this game,” Smith said. “We played hard and thats what we have to do every game to give ourselves a chance to win.” Houston shredded the Hornets defence in the first half, going 8 for 14 from 3-point range and matching its first-half season high point total set in Mondays 114-106 win in Washington. With the Hornets focused on Martin in the third quarter, Dalembert scored six points inside to keep Houston in front. But like Scola, Houston coach Kevin McHale sensed that the Rockets were losing their offensive rhythm. “We had no flow in that second half after having had a lot of flow early,” McHale said. “On average, you can feel it coming on and its a bad feeling.” The Rockets bench was unable to stretch the lead early in the fourth, and Lowry says the New Orleans defence deserves credit for turning the tide. “They junked it up a little bit on us,” Lowry said. “Just being physical, just being everywhere, just showing hard on the defensive end and making sure we didnt get easy shots.” Martin returned and converted a three-point play with 7:02 left for a 78-69 Houston lead. The Hornets defence fueled a 9-0 run capped by Smiths turnaround jumper to cut the deficit to 80-79 with just over two minutes remaining. Smith had a chance to win it in regulation, but his turnaround at the buzzer rimmed out. NOTES: The Rockets have held double-digit leads in eight straight games, one shy of matching their longest streak since 2008-09. … Houston has won 18 consecutive games when holding its opponent below 90 points. … Dalembert has three double-doubles this season, all in the last week. … The Hornets have held 12 of their first 14 opponents below 100 points. … The Rockets had a 53-48 edge on the boards, only the third time this season that the Hornets have been outrebounded. … Hornets coach Monty Williams set no target date for the return of shooting guard Eric Gordon, whos been out since Jan. 4 with a bruised right knee. … Rockets F Jordan Hill sat out with flu-like symptoms. MADRID, Spain — Madrid is celebrating the success of its two major football clubs after Atletico Madrid ensured a historic Champions League final derby against crosstown rival Real Madrid. Atleticos 3-1 victory at Chelsea saw it progress to its first European Cup final in 40 years, where record champion Madrid awaits after crushing titleholder Bayern Munich 5-0 over two legs. Atletico is on the verge of an historic double as it closes in on its first Spanish league title in 18 years, while Madrid is chasing a treble after winning the Copa del Rey against Barcelona. The feat is all the more impressive for Atletico, which under coach Diego Simeone has completely turned from a club with a history for underachieving and late collapses into a European heavyweight. “Atletico is a real team,” Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said after Wednesdays defeat. “It knows how to be strong in defence and when to come out and attack. Its a great team.” One year after an all-German Champions League final, the continents top competition has its first ever final between clubs from the same city. “Im happy that its an all-Spanish final,” Atletico playmaker Koke said of the May 24 date in Lisbon. “Its going to be a special day, a very nice day because all of Madrid will be in Lisbon.” The final will also highlight the teams different philosophies and history. Atleticos blue-collar base is far removed from Reals home in the northwest Chamartin area with its leafy avenues, luxury homes, and expensive cars. Madrid is the record 32-time Spanish champion with nine European Cups, and record revenues that are nearly five times that of Atletico allow it to pay for Ballon dOr recipient Cristiano Ronaldo and world-record 100 million euros signing Gareth Bale. Atleticos payroll is a fraction of Madrids or Barcelonas, and it is a club with a history of dubious finances. Yet Simeone, who was on the team that won the league-cup double in 1996, has nurtured a winning culture from a squad that has changed little since his arrival more than two years ago, and despite the sale of star striker Radamel Falcao in the off-season. “Its crazy to think were in the Champions League final,” Atletico midfielder Tiago Mendes said. “But this team deserves it after everything it has accomplished.” Madrid and Atletico have met just once before in the competition, in the 1959 semifinals, where Madrid won a replay 2-1 when their two-leg series finished 2-2. Atleticos only final appearance in 1974 saw it succumb to Bayern Munich 4-0 in a replay following a 1-1 draw. While Madrid beat Atletico en route to this seasons domestic cup trophy, Atletico still enjoyed a breakthrough year against its city neighbour, which is returning to the final for the first time since 2002. Atletico beat Madrid in the Copa del Rey final last season for its first win over its city rival in 25 games. It followed that up with a league victory at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium followed by a draw at home at the Vicente Calderon. Spanish leader Atletico is six points ahead of Madrid, which has one game in hand, with three left to play, while Barcelona trails the Spanish leader by four points. The league has been dominated by Madrid and Barcelona since Valencia was the last club besides the big two to win the championship in 2004. But Atletico could clinch its first title since 1996 with a victory against Levante on Sunday if both Madrid and Barcelona lose their games. The all-Spanish final also proves the domestic league is healthy despite continued economic problems. Either Sevilla or Valencia will also advance to the Europa League final. Even the citys cleanup crews should have an easy time co-ordinating their work following the victors celebrations. Madrid traditionally celebrates its triumphs at Plaza de Cibeles, while Atleticos fans gather just down the street at Plaza de Neptuno. “This is the final all Madridistas have been waiting for,” Madrid fan Jose Luis Marron Rodriguez said. “Whatever the result, the European Cup stays at home. Now, let the best team win — I just hope its Madrid.” . — Reginas Mark McMorris is taking home a silver medal and a fractured rib from Saturdays slopestyle event at the Winter X Games. D.J Augustin scored 20 points and Taj Gibson had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 102-94 win over Philadelphia on Wednesday night, handing the 76ers their 22nd straight loss. The Sixers are four losses shy of matching the NBA record for the longest single-season losing streak. The Cleveland Cavaliers set the record of 26 consecutive losses in the 2010-11 season. The Vancouver Grizzlies (1995-96), Denver Nuggets (1997-98) and Charlotte Bobcats (2011-12) each lost 23 straight. “Winnable game,” 76ers coach Brett Brown said. “I say that because a group thats been losing … still stays together. They still compete. Im proud of them.” The Sixers also lost their 17th straight home game since beating Charlotte on Jan. 15. They were 8-11 at home at that point and had already defeated Miami, the Bulls, and Houston in Philadelphia. After the Sixers were 3-0 following a Nov. 2 win over Chicago, fans held signs that said, “3-0. Thats No Bull.” That seems like another season at times after the Sixers traded Evan Turner, Spencer Hawes and Lavoy Allen at the deadline for draft picks, a necessary step for a rebuilding franchise. Unlike most of the first 21 losses in the streak, the Sixers were competitive until the final possessions, never letting the Bulls lead by more than 11. Sixers centre Byron Mullens, who hadnt attempted a shot all game, hit consecutive 3s to pull the Sixers to 83-80. He made a nifty save on a ball headed out of bounds, leading to Henry Sims bucket and a foul. With a chance to tie the game, Sims missed the free throw with 8:19 left. Thaddeus Young bailed him out a possession later with a 3-pointer that made it 85-all. Joakim Noah buried a go-ahead 3 from the top of the arc and Augustin followed with one from the sideline to put the Bulls up 91-85. Tony Wrotens 3 made it 93-90 but it was just more false hope. Carlos Boozers emphatic dunk stretched the lead to six and the Bulls did enough to hang on and move to .500 onn the road (17-17).dddddddddddd The Sixers have lost three of four by less than 10 points after losing each of the previous 10 games by double-digits. “We knew it would be this type of game,” Augustin said. “We just tried to fight them until the end and it was a fight, a real fight.” The Sixers could make it 23 straight with a loss Friday to New York. Then three straight on the road at Chicago, San Antonio and Houston. If the Sixers lose all of those games, the potential record 27th loss would come March 29 vs. Detroit. Young scored 24 points for the Sixers and Wroten had 17. “Were going to get one soon,” Wroten said. Boozer had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulls and Noah added 14 points and 10 boards. The Sixers solid 11-for-24 3-point shooting was undone by a 9 of 19 mark from the free-throw line. “There is just no inch for error,” Brown said. “Theres no wiggle room at all.” The Sixers stayed tight and chipped away in the third, making it 64-61 on Youngs 3-pointer. Sims was 0 for 7 from the floor until his first basket cut it to 64-63. The Sixers just couldnt make the clutch basket or two to finally take the lead. Theyd get as close again as two points in the third and trailed only 75-69 at the end of the quarter. “I think Bretts done a great job with them,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "Theyve got a lot of moving parts. I give a guy like Young a lot of credit for his professionalism — how hard he plays. They shot the ball well. The Bulls played without Derrick Rose, the former MVP point guard who tore the meniscus in his right knee at Portland in November and was ruled out for the remainder of the season. Thibodeau said Rose could could be ready to return if he gets the call to play this summer for Team USA at the world championships. “I know hed like to do it,” Thibodeau said. “I know how USA basketball feels about him. If hes cleared to do it, Id love to see him do it.” NOTES: The Sixers are 3-32 since a four-game winning streak ended Jan. 4. … The Bulls have won seven of eight against the Sixers. ORLANDO, Fla. — A miserable season just keeps getting worse for the Philadelphia 76ers. Tobias Harris scored a career-high 31 points and the Orlando Magic beat the 76ers for the second time in less than a week, winning 92-81 Sunday night to extend Philadelphias losing streak to 14 games. The 76ers skid is their longest since 1994, when they lost 15 straight, and includes a defeat last Monday to the Milwaukee Bucks, the NBAs worst team. The 76ers have the NBAs second-worst record, while the Magic have the third-worst. Nikola Vucevic had 18 points and 17 rebounds for Orlando, which outscored Philadelphia 26-12 in the fourth quarter to earn the win. “It was definitely my mindset to attack them, put pressure on their defence,” Harris said. “When I saw gaps in their defence, I wanted to attack them. They were focusing a lot on Nik tonight, so I saw a lot of openings spacing-wise that I used to my advantage.” Both Orlando and Philadelphia have been clear that they are in rebuilding phases, and the 76ers traded two of their best players — centre Spencer Hawes and guard-forward Evan Turner — on Feb. 20. Philadelphia coach Brett Brown attributed the 76ers new-look lineup to their recent woes, pointing to it as a reason behind his squads spate of turnovers against Orlando. “We had 19 turnovers and six came from our point guards,” Brown said. "A lot of that happened when we had three of five guys on the court who have only been with each other four days. Our offence hurt us more than our defence. “We were throwing the ball away or not knowing who to turn to. We poked ourselves in the eye with our turnovers. But give Orlando credit for raising the intensity in the fourth quarter and bothering us.” Thaddeus Young had 29 points for Philadelphia and Michael Carter-Williams added 17 points and 11 rebounds. Both teams played road games the night before, which might have contributed to sloppy in a game that featured two of the leagues top rookies: Carter-Williams and Orlandos Victor Oladipo. Carter-Williams leads all NBA rookies in points, rebounds, assists, steals and minutes played, is a front-runner to win the Rookie of the Year award, with Oladipo closely following him. Oladipo finished with nine points and Magic coach Jacque Vaughn admitted hes monitoring Oladipos minutes out of concern for fatigue. “Ill gauge his minutes to see how he feels,” Vaughn said. “But hes been taking care of his body.” NOTES: Magic guards Jameer Nelson (sore calf) and Arron Afflalo (illness) were out with injuries. It was the fifth game in a row Afflalo has missed, three with a sprained ankle and two with illness. . The Magic have a 15-15 record at home, thanks to winning seven of their last eight. . In their 14-game losing streak, Philadelphia has lost by an average of 16.8 points, with 11 of 14 of those losses coming by double digits. … Even though the team that finishes with the leagues worst record increases its draft lottery chances, its no guarantee. The last team to finish with the worst record and secure the No. 1 pick was the Magic 10 years ago. They used that pick to select Dwight Howard. After Gasquet beat fifth-seeded Ivan Dodig of Croatia 7-5, 6-3, Tsonga followed up with a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2 win against sixth-seeded Edouard Roger-Vasselin in an all-French match. Gasquet, ranked ninth, broke Dodig twice in the first set and once more in the second set, where he saved three break-points of his own. He sealed the win on his own serve when Dodigs forehand from the back of the court was wide. “I played a solid match. I served well, didnt really drop off at all during the match and managed to save some break-points,” said Gasquet, who lost the Open Sud de France final in Montpellier to countryman Gael Monfils earlier this month. “Im happy to be in the semifinals. Its the first time Ive reached the semifinals here so Id like to get to the final.” Gasquet next faces third-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, who won 6-3, 7-6 (1) against No. 8 Nicolas Mahut of France to reach his second consecutive semifinal. He leads thee 23rd-ranked Gulbis 2-0 in the career head-to-heads.dddddddddddd Tsonga, who improved to 4-0 against Roger-Vasselin, next faces Germanys Jan-Lennard Struff, who continued his run toward a first career final with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Frenchman Michael Llodra. “Edouard played very well. He took his chance in the tiebreaker and was very aggressive,” Tsonga said. “It was tricky and Im glad to have got out of it. I hope I recover well so that I can play a good match tomorrow.” Tsonga broke Roger-Vasselin twice in the second and third sets, and sealed victory on his first match point with a backhand pass down the line. But Tsonga, who had 39 winners, was unhappy with his overall performance. “I got through with my serve tonight,” he said. “The rest wasnt great and at one point I wanted to leave the court because I was ashamed of how I was playing.” The 23-year-old Struff, who is ranked 117th, had nine aces, won 87 per cent of first-service points, did not face a single break-point and broke Llodras serve three times in a dominant performance. (SportsNetwork.com) – Tired of not getting positive results, the underachieving Ottawa Senators held a players-only meeting on Monday. On Tuesday, well see if the get-together pays immediate dividends when captain Jason Spezza and the Senators visit the Chicago Blackhawks for a battle at the United Center. Spezza, who is in his first season as captain following the departure of Daniel Alfredsson to Detroit, called the meeting and said the team had a dialogue for about 35 minutes. Count head coach Paul MacLean among those who think the meeting could help his team find its way after a 4-5-2 start to the season. “I think any time youre talking about things and finding solutions when you work in a group I think its a good thing and a positive thing, trying to find solutions,” MacLean told the media after Mondays practice. The Senators enter Tuesday having lost two straight and three of their last four games. Since beating the Detroit Red Wings by a 6-1 score last Wednesday in the Motor City, Ottawas offense has been an issue as the club has managed just three goals over their past two games. After dropping a 2-1 regulation decision Friday against the visiting Anaheim Ducks, the Senators were handed a 5-2 defeat in Sundays home test against the San Jose Sharks. Ottawa did manage to fire 40 shots on goal against the Sharks, but San Jose goaltender Alex Stalock, making his first NHL start, turned away 38 of them. “Right now its not going our way, its just something you have to fight through,” Senators forward Kyle Turris said. Craig Anderson allowed all five goals on 29 shots for the Senators in the loss. Ottawa will try to get on track tonight against a Chicago club it has little success against in recent years. The Blackhawks have won two straight, five of six and seven of the past nine meetings between the clubs and the Sens have lost four in a row in Chicago. The last time Ottawa won a game in the Windy City was back on March 28, 2001, when the Sens notched a 5-2 win. Chicago, the defending Stanley Cup champions, is coming off a 5-1 rout of the Minnesota Wild on Monday. The Blackhawks won the road portion of the home-and- home series after losing Saturdays 5-3 decision against the Wild in Chicago Patrick Kane and Brandon Saad each tallied a goal and an assist to help the Blackhawks halt a two-game losing streak. Nick Leddy, Patrick Sharp and Sheldon Brookbank added a goal apiece for the Blackhawks. “I liked the results of everybody tonight,” Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville said. “I thought we had a very business-like approach to the game, played with a purpose and got some contributions across the board.” Corey Crawford turned away 29 shots in the triumph and he could get the start Tuesday on back-to-back nights. Centerman Michal Handzus is expected to miss a third straight game for Chicago with an upper-body injury. cheap jerseys from china . The Formula One circus has arrived in town and on this Thursday afternoon the teams crew members are setting up their equipment in the pit lane ahead of the three day race weekend. SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Fourth-quarter comebacks have been common for the Sacramento Kings this season. The one Tuesday night was different, though, because they finally won. DeMarcus Cousins had 27 points and 12 rebounds to help Sacramento rally for a 107-104 victory over the Phoenix Suns. The Kings, who outscored Phoenix 25-16 in the fourth, scored the final 10 points of the game in a run that was aided by three straight Suns turnovers in the closing minutes as Sacramento halted a two-game skid. The teams play again Wednesday night in Phoenix. “I never say, Wait until the fourth quarter. We have to give a much more consistent effort,” Kings coach Michael Malone said. "I cant figure us out at times. Were first in the league in fewest turnovers, but weve had games recently where we look like the Keystone Cops. That needs to be cleaned up, especially going into their house tomorrow. Overall, the Kings have had little to feel good about early this season. Despite a favourable schedule with a number of home games, they dropped seven of eight after defeating Denver in the opener. Selfish play on offence, combined with a lack of defensive effort and overall hustle, has typified the Kings thus far. But that wasnt the case in the fourth quarter when Sacramento forced six turnovers and limited the Suns to 32 per cent shooting. “Everybody was doing whatever it took to win this game,” said reserve guard Isaiah Thomas, who scored nine of his 19 points in the fourth, including two huge free throws. “A win like this builds confidence that we can be a good defensive team. This is a positive step forward for us.” It was definitely a positive step forward for rookie Ben McLemore. He made four 3-pointers and had a season-high 19 points. That was six more points than he had combined in his previous three starts since replacing Marcus Thornton at shooting guard. “I just wanted to come out and stay aggressive,” said McLemore, who also had five rebounds and a block in a season-high 34 minutes. “My teammates and our coaching staff has confidence and told me to just keep shooting. Even after I missed shots tonight, I kept shooting. Im a shooter; thats what I do.” Cousins was dominant inside for much of the game, even though his left shoulder popped out of place in the second quarter and bothered him slightly for the rest of the night. The Kings physical centre shot 9 of 18 and added four steals, three assists and two blocks. “After a few pain pills my adrenaline got going and it kind of went away, but it will really be hurting tomorrow,” Cousins said, adding the shoulder wasnt separated. Greivis Vasquez had 11 points and Patrick Patterson 10 for the Kings. Gerald Green scored 23 points and Marcus Morris had 19 for the Suns, who lost their third straight and dropped to 1-4 on the road.dddddddddddd Phoenix had 16 turnovers and was outrebounded 48-31. Archie Goodwin scored 16 and Goran Dragic had 10 points and eight assists with seven turnovers. “The way we play (up tempo), were going to have some turnovers,” said Channing Frye, who had 17 points and nine rebounds. “But theres a difference between good turnovers and bad turnovers. And tonight we had too many bad turnovers.” Morris missed a corner 3-pointer and Cousins grabbed the rebound and made one of two free throws with just under a second left to preserve the victory. Phoenixs five losses this season are by a total of 16 points. “That one was the worst of them all,” coach Jeff Hornacek said. “You cant go down to the end of the game and have five or six straight turnovers. We were just not taking care of the ball. They run the plays. They dont run them the right way and then we turn it over. Give them credit, they stuck in there.” Travis Outlaw tied the score with a jumper and Thomas followed with two free throws to put the Kings ahead 106-104 with 30.4 seconds left. It was Sacramentos first lead since early in the second quarter. With the Kings trailing by seven, Thomas made two free throws and Cousins had a three-point play to cut the Suns lead to 104-102. Phoenix played without starting point guard Eric Bledsoe, who bruised his left shin in practice this week. Bledsoe leads the team in scoring (20.4) and assists (6.8). After the Kings tied the score at 97, Frye made a putback to put the Suns ahead. Dragic followed with a runner and Greens 3-pointer off a fast break extended the lead to 104-97. The Kings made three 3-pointers early in the third quarter, and the final one by Jimmer Fredette cut the Phoenix lead to 95-93 with 7:42 left in the fourth. Green scored 11 points in the third quarter when the Suns stretched the lead to 14 on several occasions. But McLemore hit two 3s and had 11 points for the Kings, who closed the gap to 88-82 heading into the fourth. Morris scored 14 points and Goodwin had 12 to help Phoenix take a 62-54 lead into halftime. The Suns shot 54 per cent and made 17 of 22 free throws in the opening half. NOTES: Hornacek was called for a technical midway through the first quarter. … Thomas scored in double figures off the bench for the 10th straight game to start the season, establishing a franchise record that he previously shared with Walt Williams. … Goodwin stole a pass and dunked at the other end to conclude a 10-0 run for the Suns to open the second quarter. … McLemore made two 3s and had eight first-quarter points. In his previous three starts, McLemore shot 5 of 20 and had 14 total points. … Thornton, who started the first six games but has struggled in the early going, didnt play for the first time this season.
