Téma: Jak postupovat / for a boost. Ginobili is n DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — After more than 2,400 miles and 23 1/2 hours of racing, the most prestigious North American sports car race came down to eight minutes and a final five-lap sprint. The first race of the unified United SportsCar Championship — the NASCAR-owned and IMSA-sanctioned series born from the merger between American Le Mans and Grand-AM — ended with a NASCAR flair. A late, full-course caution swallowed Joao Barbosas 13-seccond lead and gave Max Angelelli a last-ditch chance to win the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Barbosa never gave him a chance, pulling away on the restart with 8:23 to race Sunday to give Action Express Racing its second victory in four years. It gave Barbosa his second overall win and third in class. Co-driver Sebastien Bourdais won the Rolex for the first time, while Christian Fittipaldi won for the second time. Action Express second entry finished third — and Chevrolets new Corvette swept the podium — in an outstanding day for the Bob Johnson-owned organization. Action won its first Rolex in 2010, and Barbosa was part of that team. “This one wasnt unexpected,” Johnson said. “This one we expected to win.” It wasnt easy. Barbosa was black-flagged for avoidable contact while running second Sunday morning, a penalty he called “really harsh” at the time. But the team worked its way back into contention. The caution nearly unraveled the comeback. While Angelelli thought there was enough debris to warrant the caution, Barbosa disagreed. “Max, he said he saw a lot of debris that I really didnt see,” Barbosa said. “I was really surprised by that caution, but its racing, and we just had to deal with it. But were here, we won the race.” Wayne Taylor Racing finished second for the second consecutive year. Co-owner Wayne Taylor came out of retirement to drive for the first time since 2010, seeking a chance to share the seat with Angelelli and sons Ricky and Jordan. The 58-year-old Taylor drove one stint Saturday and then retreated to the pit stand to strategize for what he hoped would be a third — and most memorable — victory. “It was a great result, and to have my family and my kids drive with me and Max, its been an emotional roller-coaster,” Wayne Taylor said. Action Express second car, with drivers Brian Frisselle, Burt Frisselle, John Martin and Fabien Giroix, was third. Ford was shut out in its debut of its new EcoBoost engine. The No. 01 car of Chip Ganassi Racing team wasnt able to defend its race win because of a series of problems that plagued the car starting very early in the race. Ganassis No. 02 entry was taken out of contention when it developed a flat rear tire while Scott Dixon was running second with roughly five hours remaining. The car went to the garage with 48 minutes remaining when the floor of the Ford Riley began to unravel and Dixon could see the pavement under his feet. Michael Shank Racings entry, the 2012 race winning team, was halted by a broken gearbox. CORE autosport finished a lap ahead of 8Star Motorsport to win the Prototype Challenge class. “Ive loved motorsports all my life,” CORE owner and co-driver Jon Bennett said. “Its so great for it to love me back today.” Porsche North America claimed the GT Le Mans class with its No. 911 RSR entry. The crowded GT Daytona class had the most thrilling — and controversial — finish of the race. The victory went to Flying Lizard Motorsports when IMSA officials penalized Level 5 Motorsports for avoidable contact on the last lap. Alessandro Pier Guidi in the Level 5 Ferrari traded the lead in the final laps with FLMs Markus Winkelhock, who was driving an Audi. With the Audi mounting a challenge heading into the kink portion of the course, the two cars battled side-by-side through the tight corner. The Audi ran off course, and although replays showed no contact between the two cars, the Ferrari was penalized for avoidable contact and Flying Lizard got the victory. Level 5s drivers and team personnel charged toward Victory Lane to argue their case. “If you look on the monitors, there was no contact,” driver Townsend Bell said. “Im gutted for (Pier Guidi) and the team. I think the fans want an answer for how a call comes in like that. I feel like we deserve this one.” But Flying Lizard driver Spencer Pumpelly was adamant teammate Winkelhock was in the right and IMSA made the correct call. “We dont drive people off the road. We dont win races by driving people off the road,” Pumpelly said. “They tried to do that, and it didnt work, and its a great result for us.” cheap nfl jerseys .J. — New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his left knee. Griffin was ejected for his second technical with 10:43 left after scuffling with Andrew Bogut, following Warriors forward Draymond Green to the showers after they got into it at the end of the third. “After a league review of the Clippers-Warriors game, we have come to the conclusion that Blake Griffin should not have been ejected from the game,” said Rod Thorn, the NBAs president of basketball operations. “A common foul should have been called on Griffin for initially attempting to dislodge the Warriiors Andrew Bogut and a technical foul should have been assessed to Bogut for grabbing Griffin by the shirt and wrestling with him.dddddddddddd” With Griffin gone, the Clippers missed several key chances in the waning moments. “If you look at it, I didnt do anything and I got thrown out of the game. It all boils down to they (referees) fell for it,” Griffin said after the game. “To me, its cowardly basketball. I dont know their intentions, but it worked. … If I knew the answer Id probably be in a different position. Tonight I got two technicals for nothing.” Also Thursday, the NBA fined Green $15,000 for failing to leave the court in a timely manner after his ejection. Téma: Jak postupovat / 100 yards with two TDs and one i BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Colin Montgomerie learned something about playing major championship golf at the age of 51 in the Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores. “I learned today to concentrate on me, and possibly I havent in the past,” the Scot said Sunday after shooting a 6-under 65 for a four-stroke victory over 64-year-old Tom Watson. “Were always learning and today I concentrated on my own play and could only worry about myself.” The victory was first as a senior, his first in seven years and his first in an official event in the United States. He also claimed a senior major in his fifth attempt, something he didnt accomplish in 71 majors in his regular tour days. Montgomerie, whose greatest moments in golf have been in Ryder Cup competition, finished at 13-under 261 for his first victory since he took the 2007 European Open for his 31st European Tour title. Watson also closed with a 65, and Jay Haas and Bernhard Langer tied for third at 7 under. Haas had a 67, and Langer shot 70. Montgomerie offered some comic relief on the final hole when he pulled his final approach some 20 yards only to get a bounce off the grandstand. The ball rolled to the middle of the green to set up a tap-in par. “I feel fantastic, really, superb,” he said. “Theres a motto: If you fail and fail, you come back and try again. Ive had a couple of failures here in America and close calls, especially in major championships, and its great to finally win, never mind a Champions Tour event, but a Senior PGA Championship event.” Watson, who later this year will captain the U.S. Ryder Cup team, put a charge in the tournament when he made birdies on the second and fifth holes and started the back nine with consecutive birdies to pull within one shot of the lead. He missed a 4-foot birdie putt at the short par-5 15th hole that would have put him within one shot again. “Yeah that was the roadblock right there,” Watson said. “I needed to make four there to keep the pressure on.” Montgomerie made a charge of his own. He birdied Nos. 8, 9 and 10 and, with precise iron shots and clutch putting, also made birdies at 12, 14 and 15 to pull away. He said the birdies in the middle of the round were the key. “I was caught,” he said. “It was between seven or eight players that could actually win there. Those birdies were the key.” Montgomerie will head home to Scotland for a few weeks with a first-place check of $378,000 and his name will go on the Alfred S. Bourne Trophy. The win also netted him a lifetime exemption to the Senior PGA Championship, and 2014 exemptions for the PGA Championship, Senior British Open and U.S. Senior Open. Watson, who made a bid to be the oldest player to win a senior event of any kind, had five consecutive pars to end his round while missing several birdie chances. He hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation. “It was one of the best rounds from tee to green that I played in years,” Watson said. “It was really, really good, but the putter felt like a snake in my hands. I missed a lot of short putts today. It could have been a much better scoring round of golf.” Bernhard Langer, playing with Montgomerie for a fourth consecutive round, hit his tee shot at No. 11 in the hazard right of the green and ended up making double bogey on the 140-yard par 3. It put him four shots behind Montgomerie at the time. Montgomerie is the third Scot to win senior golfs oldest championship, and the first since Jock Hutchison won his second Senior PGA in 1940. Previously slumping, Washingtons offence has 14 runs and 30 hits in its last two games. Strasburg (4-4) allowed two unearned runs, though his error led to them, and six hits. WINNIPEG — Alex Brink did all he could to keep the Winnipeg in control of top spot in the CFL East, but it wasnt quite enough to lead the Blue Bombers out of a big first-half deficit. The backup quarterback led the Bombers back from a 24-3 hole late in the second quarter, but the Toronto Argonauts hung on for 27-22 win Friday night. Brink replaced starter Buck Pierce in the second quarter after Pierce suffered an injury to his right leg with just under eight minutes left. The team said the leg will be evaluated. “Its definitely a step backwards,” said Brink, who completed 16-of-27 pass attempts for 219 yards with a touchdown toss to Greg Carr. "We put ourselves in a great position last week in getting the win over Montreal and we had a chance to control our own destiny. “Now weve got to regroup and go out and put together a win next week.” The loss hurt Winnipegs quest to finish first in the CFL East Division and get a bye into the conference final. The Bombers (10-7) had been tied for first in the East with the Montreal Alouettes (10-6), who host Calgary on Sunday. Winnipeg finishes the regular season in Calgary while Montreal visits the B.C. Lions. If the Bombers and Als are tied at the end of the season, Winnipeg gets first place by virtue of winning the season series with Montreal 2-1. Well out of the playoff picture, the Argos (5-12) played the spoiler role. Argonaut cornerback Byron Parker set a CFL record for career interceptions returned for a touchdown when he picked off a Pierce pass and ran it back 50 yards for the touchdown. It was the ninth pick for a TD in Parkers seven-year career. Pierce threw his interception to Parker after he was rushed before his throw by defensive back Lin-J Shell, who fell on him. He was 5-of-11 for 50 yards with the one interception. Parker seemed happier with the “team win” than the record. “As far as the record, its a humbling experience,” he said. “Its just a credit to all the guys thats brought me along in football — my teammates, my coaches.” The game marked the seventh straight sellout at Canad Inns Stadium (29,751) and helped Winnipeg set a single-season atttendance record of 266,008.dddddddddddd Bomber kicker Justin Palardy was good on all five of his field-goal attempts, including a pair from 42 yards out and the others from 10, 12 and 26 yards. Toronto also got touchdowns from receiver Chad Rempel and running back Jeff Johnson. Argos kicker Noel Prefontaine had a second-quarter field goal from 37 yards, was short on a 50-yard attempt and connected on a 19-yarder with 1:36 left in the game. Toronto hung on for the victory despite also losing its starting quarterback. Steven Jyles was injured with 9:03 left in the game when he was sliding and got hit helmet-to-helmet by Bomber defensive back Johnny Sears. Players started scrapping as Jyles laid on the turf and Sears and Argo linebacker Jason Pottinger were kicked out of the game. Dalton Bell, who went into the game briefly for Jyles when he took a hard hit during the first quarter, finished the game and was 2-of-4 for 13 yards. The status on Jyles was a possible concussion, but he said he felt fine and followed the game from the dressing room by listening to the announcer. “He had me (knocked) out for a second,” Jyles said of the Sears hit. "Thats what they tell me. “Im OK. No headache. No dizziness.” Jyles finished 9-of-13 for 100 yards with two TDs and one interception. Carr led all receivers with seven catches for 122 yards and was frustrated by his teams inconsistency. “You know that at the end of the day its not them, its you,” Carr said. Bomber running back Chris Garrett rushed 20 times for 159 yards. “I wouldnt call it a setback,” Garrett said of the loss. “Weve just got to finish the season strong and just pretty much see what Montreal does.” Toronto running back Cory Boyd had 14 carries for 91 yards, giving him 1,036 on the season — the second Argo in history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. Michael Jenkins was the other in 2000 and 01. Notes: The Bombers paid tribute to alumni at halftime as the club marked its last regular-season game at the 58-year-old stadium. The team will move into a new stadium on the campus of the University of Manitoba next year. Téma: Jak postupovat / , the two decided that Saunders shoul DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Stephen Gallacher of Scotland shot a final round 72 Sunday to become the first player to successfully defend the Dubai Desert Classic title, beating Emiliano Grillo of Argentina by one stroke. Gallacher fought back after four bogeys over his opening eight left him in a five-way tie for the lead after 11 holes. He won the 25-year-old tournament with an overall 16-under 272 for only his third victory in 18 years and 431 events on the European Tour. Grillo secured his best Tour finish with an overall 15-under 273 when he eagled the last hole for a round of 66. Frenchman Romain Wattel also shot a 66, including birdies on the last two holes, to finish tied in third on 14-under 274 with Brooks Koepka (70) of the United States. Rory McIlroy struggled with a 74 to finish tied for ninth while top-ranked Tiger Woods (71) birdied his closing three holes for a share of 41st with a 6-under 282. The 39-year old Gallacher eventually broke clear of the logjam atop the leaderboard to birdie Nos. 13, 16th and 17th before a regulation par at the last. “It took everything I had to win today especially after the start I had when I bogeyed the first two holes,” Gallacher said. “The good thing is that I was fortunate that no one was running away with the tournament … The turning point came at 11 when I holed a nice putt for birdie.” The win puts Gallacher into the top 40 in the world, putting him in strong position to play the Masters for the first time in his career. The top 50 in the world at the end of March get into the Masters. McIlroy began the last day two shots behind playing partner Gallacher but was 2-over after 10 holes before the first birdie of his round at the 11th. The Northern Irishman then bogeyed the 12th and 13th before only his second birdie of the round at No. 17. “On the rare occasions I got the ball close, I didnt make any putts, so it was one of those days,” McIlroy said. “I thought if I could get to 16 under it would be good enough and it turned out that it was as thats what Stephen got to. I just wasnt able to play well enough to get there. It was just one of those days. Nike Roshe Run Women Sale . PETERSBURG, Fla.MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Timberwolves best days came with Flip Saunders on the sideline. Now that the organization is shrouded in uncertainty surrounding the long-term future of star forward Kevin Love, Saunders is returning to the bench to try revive a franchise that hasnt made the playoffs in 10 years. With the teams coaching search complicated by Loves status, the Timberwolves decided the best course of action was to have Saunders, who was hired last season as president of basketball operations, step in for a second stint as coach until the situation stabilized, two people with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Thursday. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not officially announced the move. A news conference was scheduled for Friday. Saunders previously coached the Timberwolves from 1995-2005. He won 411 games in 10 1/2 seasons in Minnesota and guided the Wolves to the only eight playoff appearances in franchise history, including the Western Conference finals in 2004. He has a career record of 638-526 in 16 seasons as an NBA head coach, a career that also includes stops in Detroit and Washington. Saunders is joining a short list in the NBA of coaches that also have final-say executive authority, one that includes newly hired Stan Van Gundy in Detroit, Doc Rivers with the Los Angeles Clippers and, to a certain extent, Gregg Popovich in San Antonio. Saunders will continue to work closely with GM Milt Newton in the front office while handling coaching duties. When Rick Adelman retired at the end of the regular season, he did so in part to try to help the Timberwolves move forward with a plan to show Love, a three-time All-Star who can opt out of his contract next summer, that there was a long-term plan in place for success. But Loves tenuous situation didnt help the search process, with trade rumours serving as a caution sign for several high-profile candidates. Saunders was in the market for a coach with extensive head coaching experience, either in the NBA or at a major college program, one that could command the respect of a young locker room and also handle the media scrutiny that comes with the questions surrouunding Love.dddddddddddd Names like Tom Izzo, Billy Donovan and Fred Hoiberg came and went without any traction. The Wolves hosted Memphis coach Dave Joerger for an interview two weekends ago, but Grizzlies owner Robert Pera sweetened his contract to keep him around. Sam Mitchell, Lionel Hollins, Scott Skiles and several others received consideration as well. Unable to find what they felt was the right fit for a delicate job, Saunders and owner Glen Taylor met this week to reassess the situation. Taylor said when he brought Saunders back as team president that he would not put him back on the bench. He fired Saunders as coach once before, in 2005 when Latrell Sprewell and Sam Cassell, unhappy with their contracts, submarined the follow-up to the teams stirring run to the Western Conference finals. Saunders was also hopeful that he could find someone other than himself to take over the team. But with Loves status preventing them from pursuing the coaches they felt would fit best, the two decided that Saunders should take over for at least this season if not longer. The Timberwolves have not given up on convincing Love to play out this season in Minnesota and re-sign next summer to a contract that can pay him and extra year and about $26.5 million more than any other team. It was not immediately clear what the appointment of Saunders would do for Loves desires to stay or go. Love has yet to make the playoffs in his six seasons in the league and is believed to be growing impatient with the Wolves, who finished 40-42 and in 10th place in the West this year. Love created a stir when he spent last weekend in Boston, where the Celtics are rumoured to be making a run at trading for the 25-year-old power forward before the June 26 draft. Just how long Saunders will coach remains to be seen. There is the possibility that Saunders will add assistants to his staff who could be groomed to eventually take over. The Wolves were expected to reach out to Mitchell, a former Timberwolves player and Raptors head coach, and David Blatt, who has spearheaded Russias return to Olympic relevance and coaches in Israel, to gauge their interest in joining his staff. After spending more than two decades attempting to become an NHL head coach, and with training camp in Whistler, B.C., two weeks away, he is vowing not to change his style behind the bench. “One thing I learned is, youve gotta be who you are,” said Desjardins, 57, the new Canucks coach, after taking part in a Vancouver Board of Trade luncheon Tuesday. “You cant be somebody youre not. (Otherwise), it just falls apart on you.” Desjardins reached the NHL this spring after helping the Texas Stars win the AHL title. He has also spent time in the Canadian university and junior ranks, winning championships at both levels, while also serving a two-season stint as a Dallas Stars assistant. Fans want a significant improvement in the standings after the team missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008 last season. Desjardins, who finds it “unbelievable” that his long-held dream of guiding an NHL clubs training camp is about to come true, suggested that chances of a Canucks turnaround are better than many people might think. “You just get to see the quality of people,” Desjardins told reporters. “Sometimes, when you get into something, you go: Oh, what I have I gotten into? But thats not the case here.” During the luncheon with 400 members of the local business community — as well as Canucks president of hockey operations Trevor Linden and team GM Jim Benning — Desjardins shed some light on what fans can expect from the veteran-laden Canucks. In one notable change, contrary to the views of former Vancouver coach John Tortorella, who was fired after one season, Daniel and Henrik Sedin are likely to spend less time killing penalties. “We have to share the workload,” said Desjardins. “I dont think were going to make the playoffs with one line being shut down. Theyre good at all aspects of the game. Theyre good at killing penalties and theyre good five-on-five. They can play the power play. I think youre lucky to have players like that. For us, we want to make sure that theyre able to go (and) at the end of the game, theyre still fresh and theyre playing hard.dddddddddddd So that may mean managing their minutes a little bit. We want to play with four lines.” Henrik and Daniel, both former NHL most valuable players, managed to produce only 50 and 47 points, respectively, last season. Daniel also endured a lengthy goal drought while both battled injuries after seeing their playing time increased. Desjardinss view on the Sedins reflects the desire of the new top brass to have the Canucks rely on their veterans. Key additions include centre Nick Bonino and defenceman Luca Sbisa, who were acquired via trade from Anaheim for Ryan Kesler. Vancouver also added veteran wingers Radim Vrbata and goaltender Ryan Miller, who were signed as free agents. Benning, who replaced former president and GM Mike Gillis, said he, Linden and Desjardins have focused this summer on finding support for the veteran core. “Therell be many challenges for throughout the season, but I think weve tried to do everything that we could at this point to make the team deeper and give them more enthusiasm so they play with more energy,” said Benning. The Canucks lack of depth showed last season as the NHL veterans and minor-league callups could not make up sufficiently for declines in offence from the Sedins and others when injuries and poor play took their toll. “We talked about maybe there wasnt the depth that we needed to counter those injuries going into that last stretch of the year,” said Benning. “So we tried to add to our depth this summer. Now, we dont have to rush young players, and we can let them develop properly and be ready to come up and play when we call them up to play.” During the luncheon, questions focused more on hockey than the clubs business issues. But the Canucks, used to perennial sellouts, are also trying to bolster their bottom line with more on-ice success. Linden told reporters that season ticket sales are “down a few percentage points.” But he expects them to pick up as training camp creates more excitement about the team. The teams had been tied atop the conference standings, but the Buckeyes (19-3, 7-2 Big Ten) dominated the second half. They used a 14-2 run to turn a one- point edge into a double-digit gap midway through the period, and held on to the finish. Jared Sullinger scored 13 points for Ohio State, which has won four in a row since losing at Illinois on January 10. Tim Hardaway Jr. netted 15 points to pace the Wolverines (16-6, 6-3), who have lost six in a row against Ohio State. Trey Burke added 13 points, including a three-pointer that capped a 7-0 burst and brought Michigan within 34-33 with just under 16 minutes remaining in the contest. However, William Buford sank a jumper at the other end, igniting the key run. Turnovers on Michigans next two possessions led to buckets by Smith and Buford, and Wolverine fouls led to free throws by Sullinger and Deshaun Thomas. Thomas pair from the line closed the rally and gave OSU a 48-35 advantage with just under 11 minutes left. The Buckeyes benefited from fouls the whole contest. The lefty is still working his way back from shoulder surgery exactly a year ago Wednesday. The Mets say he will pitch a simulated game this Sunday in Fort Myers, Fla., and then go to the instructional league. The Mets expect the two-time Cy Young Award winner to be ready for spring training. Early this year, the Mets had thought Santana might be able to rejoin the rotation by June or sometime this season. But manager Terry Collins says that hope “pretty much has been out the window for a while.” Santana made two rehabilitation starts for class-A St. Lucie and another for class-A Savannah in the South Atlantic League playoffs. There was a chance he would pitch again this week for Savannah in the championship series, but Santana and the Mets decided against that idea. On the court, those players are looking pretty small. Deron Williams couldnt score in the last game. Kevin Garnett has barely scored at all. And the Miami Heat keep proving that when it comes to constructing a super team, still nobody has done it better. Up 2-0 even without needing huge efforts from LeBron James, the Heat try to push the Nets to the brink of elimination when the series shifts to Brooklyn on Saturday night. “We did what we were supposed to do, protecting home court,” Miamis Dwyane Wade. “Now it gets interesting. Now were trying to get one in their building. This is when the playoffs get fun.” Miami tied a franchise record with its eighth straight playoff victory by pulling away to win 94-82 in Game 2 on Thursday night. The Nets felt better about their effort after getting blown out in the opener, but there was still plenty of cause for alarm. Williams, the former All-Star who teammates insist is their most important player, shot 0 for 9 in the worst playoff game of his career. Garnett, who is 10 days shy of his 38th birthday, missed a couple of point-blank attempts while going 2 for 8, but that was an improvement from his scoreless Game 1. But as they head home, the Nets still believe they can again become the team that beat the Heat all four times during the regular season. “We have a lot of confidence in ourselves,” Garnett said. “We just have to go home and defend our home court.” James, averaging just 22 points, has won at least one road game in every playoff series since he and Chris Bosh joined Dwyane Wade in Miami in 2010. A victory in Brooklyn would make it 14 straight series, giving the Heat the longest streak in NBA history. Brooklyn tried to build a threat to the two-time defending champions last summer by bringing in Garnett and Paul Pierce to join All-Star centre Brook Lopez and the Williams-Joe Johnson backcourt that wass already in place.dddddddddddd They believed their aging roster had a two-year window, but the first could be slammed shut by Monday. Lopez was long ago lost to a broken foot, and while the Nets flourished with a smaller lineup, theyre now facing a team that has won two straight titles playing small-ball. So the Nets need everyone to play well, but so far that looks unlikely. Garnett had 12 rebounds and defended well in Game 2, but shouldve had at least two more baskets. Williams, who has battled ankle problems and been in decline since signing a $98.5 million contract in 2012, passed and rebounded fine, but has to give the Nets points, too. “We look for him to bounce back in Game 3,” Nets coach Jason Kidd said. Even with Williams woes, the Nets were within two points midway through the fourth quarter. The Heat couldnt shake them until getting three straight offensive rebounds during a 100-second possession in the closing minutes, and are bracing for another tight one Saturday. “This is a very possession-oriented series. Not a lot of turnovers,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “Possessions really, really matter and those extra ones can really be backbreakers.” No NBA team has won a series after falling behind 3-0, so it doesnt take all that considerable post-season experience the Nets roster possesses to realize Brooklyn has to win the next game. “We need a win. Its a must-win,” Williams said. “We cant afford to go down 3-0. We need to get these at home starting with the one on Saturday.” The Nets are only 1-10 against the Heat in the post-season, but they also hadnt defeated Miami in the regular season for 4 1/2 years before ending that 13-game skid with a victory on Nov. 1. That was in their home opener and cemented their belief that they could topple the champs in the spring. They insist that confidence is still there. “Our mindset is positive,” reserve Mirza Teletovic said. “We know we can beat this team at home.” AP Sports Writer Tim Reynolds in Miami contributed to this report. Téma: Jak postupovat / tage for the Wolves in the third. MONTREAL — The Montreal Impact wasted no time cooling off the hottest team in Major League Soccer. Montreal needed just three minutes to score the winner against a streaking New England club, shutting out the Revolution 2-0 on Saturday night at Saputo Stadium. New England (7-4-2) came to Montreal riding a five-game winning streak, their longest such run in nearly a decade. The team was unbeaten in its last seven contests atop the Eastern Conference standings. But with fans still trickling in to their seats after the opening whistle, midfielder Andres Romero scored the Impacts quickest goal of the season in the third minute to give last-place Montreal (2-6-4) a surprise lead. Romero took a long through ball from striker Marco Di Vaio and moved in all alone on goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. With Revolution defenders requesting an offside call on the play, Romero held onto the ball several seconds before beating the keeper for his career-high third goal of the season. “We came out, we dominated, and we did exactly what we wanted to do,” said Jack McInerney, who played up front with Di Vaio in a seldom seen two-striker formation. Montreal followed the early goal with sustained pressure. Its emphasis on the long ball created several goal-scoring opportunities in the first half hour. “We had a stronger start than they did,” said defender Wandrille Lefevre. “That made a world of difference. We controlled the ball and it allowed us to ease into the game.” Many of the Impacts scoring chances fell to Di Vaio, who couldnt find the back of the net despite taking four shots on target in the first half. Di Vaio came close in the 17th minute when his strike from outside the 18-yard box missed the net by inches. A minute later, Di Vaios volley from close range was stopped by Shuttleworth. In the 26th minute, the Italian striker moved in alone on goal, but tripped and fell. The Impact took eight shots on target in the first half to New Englands one. “You have to credit the other team because they came flying,” said Revolution coach Jay Heaps. “In this league, you cant give a team anything. We gave quite a bit to Montreal, and they took it. Montreal did an excellent job of taking advantage of our slow start and they were ready.” Frank Klopas men doubled their lead in the 31st minute after an impressive individual effort by newcomer Issey Nakajima-Farran, who made his Saputo Stadium debut after being acquired from Toronto FC two weeks ago. The left-winger cut into the middle of the pitch and fired a powerful strike at Shuttleworth, who bobbled the ball. McInerney pounced on the rebound from the edge of the six-yard box for his fifth goal against New England in 10 career appearances. Although he wasnt credited with an assist on the goal, Nakajima-Farran was instrumental on the play for the Impact. “It just clicks,” said Nakajima-Farran, who played at the club level in Denmark, Australia, and Cyprus before making the move to Major League Soccer. “Everybody is playing simple, and the ball is zipping around. I feel conformable, and the guys know my movement too. Its been a very easy transition.” Coming into this one with just one win on the season, seven points from 11 games, and a league-worst goal differential, the Impacts stingy defending settled a hot team that had scored 12 goals in its last three games. The Revolution couldnt generate much offence on Saturday despite controlling the ball for long stretches. Rookie forward Patrick Mullins, who entered the game with a goal in four consecutive contests, an MLS record for a rookie, was limited to just one shot on target. And 19-year-old Diego Fagundez, who scored four times on New Englands winning streak, did not challenge goalie Troy Perkins once. “It wasnt our best stuff,” said Heaps, whose Revs still top the Eastern Conference despite the loss. “It was one of those nights where every pass was a little bit off. It didnt have the same zip to it. To break a team down, you have to have things go your way a little bit. You have to credit a team when they do a good job.” At the other end of the table, the win keeps Montreal at the bottom of the standings, but the team is now only six points out of a playoff spot. “The first couple of games of the season didnt show the kind of talent we have on this team, and what we can do,” said McInerney. “If we want to get back into the picture, we need to be consistent.” The Impact now turn their attention to a mid-week battle versus Toronto FC on Wednesday for the second leg of the Amway Canadian Championship final. The winner advances to the CONCACAF Champions League. Down a goal heading into the third period, the Wolves came from behind to win 5-4 in a shootout over the Abbotsford Heat in American Hockey League action. Heading into Thursday in Abbotsford, the Vancouver Canucks farm club was 0-19-0 when trailing after two periods. “Its a big step for our team,” said Jordan Schroeder, who scored twice for the Wolves. "We havent really done that all year. For us to come back in the third and get the shootout win is great. “Any time you score and help your team win its definitely a big boost.” Mark Mancari scored the lone goal in the shootout after the Wolves came back to tie the game in the third period. Eddie Lack stopped Dustin Sylvester to clinch the win. Lack made 19 saves in the victory, though he had to stop just five shots in the final 25 minutes. “He made some big saves for them,” said Abbotsfords Ben Walter. “Especially in the shootout. Theres not much room on him. Hes the kind of goalie thats going to make the first save most of the time and weve just got to get to the rebounds.” Rookie Brad Hunt recorded his first professional goal and added an assist, while Tim Miller also scored for the visiting Wolves (38-25-5), who increased their lead in the Midwest Division to six points, solidifying their hold on the third seed in the Western Conference. “Every game right now is huge,” said Wolves defenceman Kevin Connauton. “The standings are so tight and every point counts. I dont even know if well clinch a spot until the last three games maybe. Those points are huge tonight and we need to continue and pick up another two tomorrow.” Paul Byron, Hugh Jessiman, Joe Piskula and Krys Kolanos scored for Abbotsford (35-26-8). Leland Irving stopped 30 shots in the loss, but the single point allowed Abbotsford to hold on to fourth place in the Western Conference. The Wolves took the lead in the season series 4-2-1. The teams have developed a rivalry this season since Chicago is the Canucks farm club, just an hours drive from Abbotsford. The Heat opened the scoring on their first shot of the game at 4:02. Sylvester poked the puck away from Mark Matheson and went in on two-on-one with Byron. He faked a shot, held up and slid it over to Byron who easily redirected it past Lack for his fifth of the season. With the Wolves killing a too many men minor, Miller tied tthe game at 12:33 on a short-handed rush.dddddddddddd. He wired a shot past Irvings glove for his 18th goal of the season and his second short handed. “We cant give up short-handed goals this time of year and be an effective team,” Ward said. The Heat regained the lead just as the Wolves penalty expired. Jessiman took a pass from Greg Nemisz, wheeled out to the face-off dot and wired a shot short-side on Lack at 13:16. Schroeder scored twice in 25 seconds in the second period to give Chicago their first lead of the game. Brad Hunts point shot was deflected by Schroeder in front at 5:51, then Schroeder took a feed from Michael Davies and slid a puck under Irving for his 19th of the season. “Sometimes you get lucky bounces if you go to the net,” Schroeder said. “I was fortunate to get one off the leg and kind of got me going. That same shift my line mates made a great play and it ended up in the back of the net.” The Heat stormed right back. Piskula threw a puck towards the net that snaked its way through bodies into the net at 11:43. It was the veteran defencemans third of the season. The Heat regained the lead on their third power play of the game. Off the draw the puck came back to Kolanos, whos one-timer slapshot at 14:17 gave him 23 on the season. With ex-Wolf J.P. Testwuide in the box for tripping the Wolves tied the game. Hunt redirected a pass from Steve Reinprecht in the slot at 12:37 for his first AHL goal. “It feels great,” said Hunt, who played his minor hockey just across the Fraser River in Ridge Meadows. “It was a nice pass from Reinprecht. Its just good to get the first one out of the way and to get it at home in front of my family and friends.” The Heat had just three shots on goal in the third period and none until Hunts power play goal, the second man advantage for the Wolves in the third. “If youve got a lead in the third period you want to stay out of the box,” said Heat captain Quintin Laing. “We didnt do that and we paid a price for it.” The two teams face-off again Friday night at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. Téma: Jak postupovat / the end zone in six plays GLENDALE, Ariz. — Ryan Millers debut for the St. Louis Blues started with a tough break and ended with a victory. Miller made 23 saves and Patrik Berglund scored twice during St. Louis four-goal, third-period rally and the Blues beat the Phoenix Coyotes 4-2 on Sunday night. Kevin Shattenkirk and Magnus Paajarvi added goals for the Blues, who had been scoreless for a franchise-record 187:44 before scoring three in a nine-plus minute span. Miller was playing in his first game since being acquired by St. Louis in a five-player deal with Buffalo on Friday. In addition to posting a 284-186-57 record in 10-plus seasons, all with the Sabres, Miller entered the game 6-0-0 with a shutout and a 1.15 goals-against average in his career against Phoenix. “I was pretty anxious and nervous all day,” Miller said. “Its a new group of guys and you want to show them what youve got and let them know youre there for them.” The night got off to a rocky start courtesy of an unlucky bounce less than three minutes into the game. With a teammate skating down the slot, Paul Bissonnette wristed a soft shot toward the net. St. Louis defenceman Barret Jackman, seemingly anticipating a harder attempt, dropped to the ice for the block. But the puck ticked off the prone Jackmans left skate and bounced off Millers right shoulder and into the net for the goal and a 1-0 Phoenix lead at 2:56 of the first. “Things like that happen,” Miller said. “You need to be able to react quickly enough to recover.” Halpern made it 2-0 at 7:09 of the second, slipping behind Shattenkirk after the Blues defenceman cleared Bissonnette from the front of the crease and scoring off Yandles pass from the left boards. But momentum turned quickly in the third. Berglund took a backhand pass from Jaden Schwartz and beat Mike Smith from the left of the net to pull St. Louis within a goal at 3-1 at 3:18 of the third, his first goal in 17 games. “Everyone on the team could see Berglund was going to score,” Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. “He was on a 2-on-1 and when it went in everyone jumped up. Once we got that first goal, it was a like the weight was lifted off of everybodys shoulders and they just took off.” Just over four minutes later, Paajarvi rifled a shot past Smith from the middle of the faceoff circle to tie the game with 12:26 to go. Shattenkirk gave the Blues their first lead of the game with 7:14 left when he took a pass at the point, skated into the left faceoff circle and took advantage of a screen from T.J. Oshie to score his first goal since Jan. 21. Berglund capped the scoring with an unassisted goal with 1:39 left, jumping on a loose puck after Yandle was apparently tripped between the circles in the St. Louis zone and skating the length of the ice before scoring on a sharp wrist shot. “I think that in the last few games weve had a lot of chances, but we havent been able to capitalize,” Shattenkirk said. “We did a great job of going down 2-nothing and staying with our game plan.” Jeff Halpern scored his 150th career goal and Bissonnette added his first goal since Dec. 14 for the Coyotes, who have lost four straight and five of six. “I still look and there are good things that we are doing,” said Coyotes coach Dave Tippett, whose team squandered a chance to move from 11th place into a wild-card playoff spot in the Western Conference. “They pushed hard and we couldnt push back.” Smith made 26 saves for the Coyotes. MINNEAPOLIS — The Philadelphia Eagles were soaring after a big win in the snow the week before. This game was inside. Adrian Peterson was missing. The stage was set for another step toward the playoffs. Well, Matt Cassel and the Minnesota Vikings just made the flight path a bit bumpier. Cassel passed for two touchdowns and 382 yards, the most by a Minnesota quarterback since Brett Favre was here, and ran for another score to lead the injury-depleted Vikings to a 48-30 victory that snapped a five-game winning streak by the Eagles. “I dont think you can ever count out our players. Weve had some difficult moments this season, for sure, but I always believed,” coach Leslie Frazier said. “Even early in the week I said, This game really doesnt have to be this close, except for the fact that we were going with so many guys in backup roles.” With Peterson and Toby Gerhart out, third-stringer Matt Asiata rushed for his first three career touchdowns. Greg Jennings caught a career-high 11 passes for 163 yards. The Vikings (4-9-1) produced quite the spoiler performance without their top two running backs, top two tight ends and top three cornerbacks. This was their highest score since a 50-10 victory over Jacksonville on Dec. 20, 1998. “Got great camaraderie. Got good leadership. So as you can tell, nobodys letting down for anything,” Cassel said Fresh from a decisive win at home over Detroit that gave them control of the NFC East over Dallas, the Eagles (8-6) fell flat in the controlled climate of the soon-to-be-demolished dome. They must play at the Cowboys the last week of the season. Nick Foles threw for a career-high 428 yards and second-half touchdown scores to DeSean Jackson, Zach Ertz and Jason Avant, but he was picked off by former teammate Shaun Prater at the Minnesota 5-yard line in the third quarter. League rushing leader LeSean McCoy had 38 yards on only eight carries after posting a career-high 217 yards last week. The Eagles had nine penalties for 94 yards. “I didnt feel they was going to be able to stop us and doing things they was able to do to us today,” Jackson said. “Sometimes thats what happens when you go play a game. Theyre in the NFL, too. It was jjust a frustrating part, because I know how talented and dangerous this offence can be.dddddddddddd.” Foles finished 30 for 48, including 10 completions for 195 yards to Jackson, but he took four sacks — two each by Jared Allen and Brian Robison — and misfired on several downfield passes. After the interception, Jackson was caught on camera shouting at the coaches. “When we were 3-5 and kind of dug ourselves out of a hole there, we were playing well on the offensive side of the ball and had a rhythm to what we were doing,” coach Chip Kelly said. “Today we didnt.” After nine straight games of allowing 21 points or less, the Eagles gave up their highest total since a 52-20 loss at Denver on Sept. 29. They cut the lead to 27-22 on a tricky catch in the back of the end zone by Ertz with 15 seconds left in the third quarter, but the 2-point conversion pass was broken up. The Eagles refused to kick deep to rookie Cordarrelle Patterson, the league leader in average yards per return. After a short popup kick by Alex Henery, who made three field goals in the first half, the Vikings took the ball at their own 46 and cruised to the end zone in six plays to push the lead back to 12 points. Cassel completed 26 of 35 passes and improved to 2-2 as a starter. In two other games, he relieved an injured Christian Ponder and helped guide the Vikings to victory. “Hes not worried about what couldve, shouldve, possibly or couldve possibly been,” Jennings said. “He stays in the now. As a player, thats how we have to operate.” Asiata needed 30 attempts to total 51 yards, but he helped the Vikings control the clock after taking an early lead. Their time of possession was 36 minutes, 26 seconds. “It says a lot about this team, just the fight in our backups and everything,” wide receiver Jerome Simpson said. “They could go to any other team and play, too.” NOTES: This was Cassels highest total since Nov. 14, 2010, a 469-yard performance for Kansas City. One week earlier, Favre had 446 yards against Arizona for Minnesota. … The Eagles became the fifth team in NFL history to have 11 games in one season with at least 400 yards of offence. The record is 13 by New Orleans in 2011. cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Camper, 25, has been assigned to the American Hockey Leagues Springfield Falcons. A native of Rocky River, Ohio, Camper has appeared in 171 career AHL games with the Providence Bruins, tallying 128 points on 37 goals and 128 assists. He has registered 8 goals and 23 assists in 41 games this season, ranking third on the team in scoring. The 59 centre has also skated in three career NHL games with Boston, recording 1 goal. Prior to turning pro, Camper spent four seasons with the Miami University RedHawks from 2007-11. He registered 69 goals and 114 assists in 158 career NCAA games and was named a CCHA First-Team All-Star in 2008-09 and 2010-11. Parlett, 24, has recorded 4 goals and 14 assists and 22 penalty minutes in 37 games played with the Falcons this season. He has tallied 18 goals and 58 assists and 170 PIM in 192 career AHL games with Springfield and Connecticut. COLUMBUS, Ohio — The numbers didnt look too promising for Jeff Zatkoff in his first two NHL games. He made up for them by putting up a zero in his third. Deryk Engelland, Chris Kunitz and Jussi Jokinen scored and Zatkoff made 19 saves in his first NHL win to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins past Columbus 3-0 Saturday night for their fourth victory in a row and second over the Blue Jackets in just over 24 hours. “Ive been waiting for a month now,” Zatkoff said of his 0-2 record with a 5.06 goals-against average and a .818 save percentage. “It feels like a little weights off my shoulders. Its nice to be able to contribute to the team in the win column.” The 26-year-old rookie made several big stops but wasnt very busy as the Blue Jackets squeezed off a season-low in shots. Zatkoff is backing up Marc-Andre Fleury while Tomas Vokoun recovers from preseason surgery. “Jeffs best numbers havent been obviously in the National Hockey League,” coach Dan Bylsma said. “Hes been a solid guy. His numbers (in the minors) are outstanding. Tonight I thought there wasnt a ton of work at times in the game for him. But he looked comfortable and really solid.” Engelland scored on a rapid-fire one-timer to stake Zatkoff to a lead in the second period before Kunitz picked up his eighth when a shot went in off a Blue Jackets stick in the third. Jokinen added an empty-netter. All anyone could talk about was Zatkoffs shutout and the way the defence played in front of him. “You could see the way the guys were blocking shots and stuff, really taking it upon themselves to play good defence for him,” Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby said. “And he made the saves that he had to. Were really happy for him.” A crowd of 18,634, including thousands of Penguins fans, cheered wildly when it was announced during the first period that Columbus will host the 2015 NHL All-Star weekend. Perhaps Zatkoffs best save came when he blocked Dalton Prouts hard shot from close range at 8:32 of the third period that would have cut the margin to a goal. It did not appear that Zatkoff knew he was sitting on the puck in the crease. Kunitz made it 2-0 just 47 seconds into the third period on a fluky goal. Before taking a hard check from defenceman Jack Johnson at the right end of the goal line, Kunitz swept the puck toward the goal — where there were no teammates. But it ricocheted off the stick of trailing Columbus winger Blake Comeau and found the net. Curtis McElhinney, ggetting his second start for the Blue Jackets, looked to the rafters in exasperation.dddddddddddd The game marked the second night in a row that the teams had met. In Pittsburgh on Friday night, the Penguins manhandled the Blue Jackets 4-2 as Fleury was staked to a 4-0 lead and made it stand up with 37 saves. Columbus Sergei Bobrovsky, the Vezina Trophy winner as the NHLs top goalie last year, was pulled in favour of McElhinney after giving up three goals on 13 shots. After a scoreless first period Saturday night, the Penguins scored at the 6:46 mark of the second. Joe Vitale won a puck battle against two Blue Jackets along the wall, then skated to the right corner and saucered a centring pass to Engelland, who unloaded a one-timer from the lower right circle. McElhinney, who stopped 23 other shots, had no chance of stopping it. “Joe just put it right in the wheelhouse,” Engelland said of his second goal of the season. “I wasnt picking a corner or anything, but it found its way in.” The loss, which touched off a four-game homestand, was the third in a row for Columbus after winning three straight. “(The Penguins) were skating and seemed to have more desperation and urgency in their game,” Columbus coach Todd Richards said, comparing the second meeting with the one a night earlier. Even as the game progressed, Zatkoff said he tried not to even think about the possibility of a shutout for his first win. “I tried to block that out and go with the process,” he said. “It sounds kind of cheesy but I was worrying about every shot and trying not to look at the scoreboard.” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Blue Jackets director of hockey operations John Davidson appeared on the arena monitors over centre ice during a first-period break to announce that the 2015 All-Star Game weekend was coming to Columbus. The 2013 event was supposed to be held at Nationwide Arena, but that was cancelled by the lockout. NOTES: The Penguins play home-and-home games on back-to-back nights three times this season; this was the only such pairing all season for the Blue Jackets. … Pittsburgh had not played in Columbus since a 7-2 victory on Dec. 4, 2010, victory. … The Blue Jackets had several points streaks end: James Wisniewski (5), Nick Foligno (3) and Ryan Johansen (3). … Crosby, leading the NHL in points with 22 coming in, assisted on Jokinens empty-netter to give him at least a point in 13 of the Penguins 15 games. Téma: Jak postupovat / he flood gates opened," Yost said. PHILADELPHIA — Lewis Katz, a self-made man who built his fortune in New York parking lots, billboards and cable TV, and went on to buy the NBAs New Jersey Nets, NHLs New Jersey Devils and The Philadelphia Inquirer, died in a weekend plane crash. He was 72. Katz died Saturday night in a Massachusetts crash that claimed six other lives. His death was confirmed Sunday by his son, Drew, and his business partner Harold H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest. Katz grew up in working-class Camden, New Jersey, and worked as a lawyer before earning hundreds of millions of dollars investing in the Kinney Parking empire and the Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network in New York. He went on to become a major philanthropist in the Philadelphia region. “Youve got to make money in the world that we live in, in order to accomplish what your ultimate goal is. But along with making money, equally important is preserving, for the community, a community trust,” Katz testified at an April hearing on the Inquirers sale. “Thats what this paper represents.” Tributes poured in from prominent figures in sports, media, politics, business and education, reflecting the wide range of his interests and charitable endeavours. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called him “a visionary”; the Yankees held a moment of silence before Sundays game. Temple University recalled his recent advice to graduates to “have as much fun as you can conjure up.” “He was a visionary businessman who touched the lives of so many with his tireless pursuit of innovation and enterprise, as well as his deep commitment to his family, friends and community,” Silver said in a statement. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman in a statement called Katz a man of “tremendous influence” and sent condolences to Katzs family and “the many organizations that benefited from his philanthropy.” Katz, in his April testimony, said he had lost money on both the Nets and Devils, but made it big through the 2012 sale of the sports cable network. “We lost our shirt in the Devils and the Nets,” he testified. “But for the YES network, Id be back in my law office in Cherry Hill, waiting for the clients to come in again.” He hoped to be a hands-off owner of the Inquirer, where his longtime companion, Nancy Phillips, was the city editor. “Im spending, hopefully, a lot more time with my grandchildren and Ive opened a school in Camden for approximately 300 children,” he testified. “Im not active in business, anymore.” Katz had agreed to invest $16 million for a 26 per cent stake in the Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News in 2012 at the behest of former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, who wanted to return the newspapers to local ownership after a bankruptcy that left them in the hands of New York hedge funds. But a feud with rival investor George Norcross, an equally powerful business leader, over the direction of the news business forced him to be more a more active owner. Katz filed suit last year to stop Norcross from firing Pulitzer Prize-winning editor Bill Marimow. He succeeded, then joined Lenfest in bidding $88 million to buy out Norcross and his allies at an auction Tuesday. “He was very creative, as a person and as a business partner,” Lenfest said. “He thought beyond the edge. He had wonderful, creative ideas.” The sale had been set to close June 12, but will now be delayed for 30 days to give Katzs family time to get the estate in order, Lenfest said. “Well lose his expertise, but the paper will continue because we both intended to put a new CEO in charge of the day-to-day operations,” Lenfest said. Drew Katz will take his fathers seat on the board of directors, Lenfest said. “My father was my best friend. He taught me everything,” Drew Katz, who was often seen at his fathers side at business events, said in a statement on behalf of him and his sister. “He never forgot where and how he grew up, and he worked tirelessly to support his community in countless ways that were seen and unseen.” Katz had recently given $25 million to Temple University for its medical school, and had previously given $15 million to another alma mater, Dickinson Law School, where he had graduated first in his class. He also supported the Boys & Girls Clubs in Camden, along with many Jewish charities. Katz recently helped fund a charter school in impoverished Camden. “There are so many organizations that he endowed, many anonymously,” Marimow said Sunday. Marimow described Katz as a brilliant man and generous philanthropist who developed a love for journalism from a college stint working for the syndicated columnist Drew Pearson. “That really inspired an appreciation and a love for journalism that lasted his whole life,” Marimow said. His wife, Marjorie, died in December. His survivors include his son, daughter Melissa, and several grandchildren. Katz, a classmate of Bill Cosby in Temples 1963 graduating class, had spoken at the schools commencement last month, and received an honorary doctorate. “Life in my view is meant to be enjoyed,” he told the graduates. “Its meant to have as much fun as you can conjure up” cheap soccer jerseys . BALTIMORE — There wont be too many games in which James Shields throws seven innings of three-hit ball and is upstaged by a teammate. This was one of them. Omar Infante homered and tied a career high with six RBIs to carry the Kansas City Royals over the Baltimore Orioles 9-3 on Sunday. Shields (3-2) allowed two runs, struck out six and walked two in winning his third straight start. The right-hander gave up only an infield hit in the first five innings and improved to 10-7 lifetime against Baltimore, including 7-2 at Camden Yards. Shields was more impressed with Infantes performance, which included a fine defensive play at second base against Baltimore leadoff hitter Jemile Weeks. “Omar, definitely the player of the game,” Shields said. “It all started with that first play he made barehanded. He had a great day today. Definitely carried our team.” Infante hit a run-scoring groundout in the first inning, a sacrifice fly in the third, a two-run double in the fifth and a two-run shot in the seventh. He entered with one home run and 11 RBIs in 21 games. “It was a great day for me,” Infante said. “Im happy because that has not happened too many times for a player. It was a great day for the team. Ive been working hard in the cage. The last couple of days I hit a lot of fly balls. I dont like that; I want to drive the ball.” The last time Infante had six RBIs was last Sept. 13 with the Tigers against Kansas City. The starter for the Royals that day was …. James Shields. “Im glad hes on my team now,” Shields said. Nori Aoki scored three runs for the Royals, who took two of three from Baltimore to conclude a 3-4 road trip that began in Cleveland. Kansas City is 12-0 when scoring at least four runs and 0-12 when scoring three runs or fewer. “I take it we need to score four runs. Were trying to do it more,” manager Ned Yost said. “Its just a testament to how good our pitching is, how good our bullpen is. How good our starting pitchers are, how consistent they are that we could have that kind of record.” Nelson Cruz hit his seventh homer for the Orioles, who finished with five hits. Before the game, Baltimore pput slugger Chris Davis on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.dddddddddddd Miguel Gonzalez (1-2) gave up four runs, three earned, and six hits in six innings. “Deserved a better fate,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. The Orioles quickly got a hint of what kind of day it was going to be when Aoki, leading off the first, hit a fly to centre that popped out Adam Jones glove for a three-base error. Infante followed with a grounder to shortstop that put the Royals ahead for good. “Missed it,” Jones acknowledged. It wasnt the Orioles only mistake. “We made a couple of good decisions with pitchouts (but) we werent able to execute that,” Showalter said. “Those are two free outs. Then obviously, Adams one of the best centre fielders in the game. So Im not going to lament that at all. Hes been a rock for us out there. You spot them, give them those type of things that they dont earn, with Shields on the mound, thats not a good combination.” Baltimore fell to 0-7 in games it makes an error. The Orioles are 12-5 without committing an error. After Jarrod Dyson singled and scored in the third, singles by Alcides Escobar and Aoki preceded Infantes double in the fifth. Baltimore closed to 4-2 in the sixth when Jemile Weeks singled and Cruz homered to centre, but Kansas Citys four-run seventh against reliever Evan Meek turned the game into a blowout. After Infante connected, Alex Gordon doubled in two runs for an 8-2 lead. “The flood gates opened,” Yost said. “That broke the game open at that point.” Mike Moustakas doubled in a run off Ryan Webb in the ninth, and the Orioles scored in the bottom half on a wild pitch. NOTES: Orioles LF David Lough made a fine diving catch in the eighth inning to rob Dyson of a hit. … Cruz has 25 RBIs this month. The club record for April is 31, by Miguel Tejada in 2005. … Kansas City went 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position. Baltimore was 0 for 2. … Dyson was 5 for 5 lifetime against Gonzalez before flying out in the fifth. … Baltimores Nick Markakis got his 1,400th career hit, a single in the ninth inning. Téma: Jak postupovat / nior curling team will play for bron The Winnipeg Jets have now won three straight under new head coach Paul Maurice. The first period was scoreless with the Jets outshooting the Oilers 11-8, and both Ilya Bryzgalov and Ondrej Pavelec making a number of very good saves. The Oilers opened the scoring in the second period on a power play goal from Jordan Eberle, his 16th of the year. After the game Maurice commented on the goal, saying he wanted lefthanded Olli Jokinen to take the faceoff to the left of the Jets net, but Jokinen was not available due to a broken skate lace. On the game, Jokinen won 76 per cent of his faceoffs, winning 13 of 17. After the goal, the Jets dominated the remainder of the period but could not find the tying goal. Jets outshot Edmonton 13-8 in the second. The Jets started the third period on a power play but on this day, the power play that had scored five goals in the last four games went zero for five. But special teams did play a part in the third, as Jacob Trouba would tie the game with a shorthanded tap in goal at 5:48. The goal was Troubas first career shorthanded goal, with Bryan Little extending his point streak to four with an assist. Little is 2-4-6 over the four games. The goal came just over two minutes after Pavelec made a great save off Eberle, who went in alone but was stopped as he tried to go to the backhand. At 10:37, Mark Scheifele gave the Jets their first lead of the day with the nicest goal of the afternoon. Scheifele worked the puck out of the corner, withstood a couple of hits and buried his own rebound with a backhand shot for his ninth goal of the season and his first career goal on home ice. Blake Wheeler and Eric ODell drew assists with ODell moving onto that line in the third period with the Jets down a goal. Scheifele now has three goals and seven points in his last six games, and is 7-11-18 in his last 20 games. It appeared the goal would be the winner until the Oilers caught a bit of a break. A puck in the Jets end headed for Zach Bogosian went off the officials skate, and ended up at the point where a Jeff Petry shot was deflected by David Perron to the tie the game with two minutes left in regulation. It was Perrons 18th of the year. Jets outshot the Oilers 13-5 in the third. The overtime ended with a great effort by Wheeler, who attacked the Oiler zone with speed, had Bryzgalov down and out only to have the puck hit the side of the net. Wheeler stayed with it, and set up Trouba for his second tap-in goal of the afternoon to end it. It was Troubas first ever overtime goal and his first career two-goal game. For Wheeler, it was back to back two-point games. Final shots were 39-22 in favour of the Jets. Jets are now 3-1 in games that end in overtime and 8-5 overall in extra time games. Trouba finished a plus two, with five shots on goal in 23:32 of ice time. Zach Bogosian led the team at 25:42, Scheifele led the team in shots on goal with six. Pavelec has now won three straight games for the first time since mid-November. “The effort and intensity were good, so it was a big win for us,” said Maurice after the game. “The puck wasnt easy for us, lots of deflected passes. There were things wed like to have done better but I liked our bench, I liked the fact we got better as the game went on.” He again liked the play of Scheifele and Trouba. “They are good players with good instincts. I really liked the way Scheifele scored his goal. Took two hits to score. I think the difference between the first two periods and the third was our energy level. Weve got this building and its a bit of a powder keg.” So its three straight wins for the Jets but the team will be put to the test this week with road games in Anaheim and San Jose (both on TSN Jets and TSN 1290), then a home game Saturday vs Toronto and into Chicago on Sunday. Téma: Jak postupovat / nged personnel around, tried FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS: 1. LANDRY FIELDS (Raptors): He is looking much more comfortable each time I watch him play. Thats a good development for a guy that had injury issues/surgery to deal with last year. He lost his shot mechanics and, in many ways, his confidence. His shot release is still a bit slow but in time it will get better. Hell have to be conscious of that when he takes perimeter shots and make sure he has time to set himself up and get it off. His shot preparation will be very important. Hes a smart, team oriented player and does all the little things that coaches love and has a winning personality/approach. Too often folks focus on the contract – its not his fault that he got the deal he was offered, and who wouldnt take it? Bottom line for the Raptors, to compete for a playoff spot this year theyre going to have to find some consistent productivity from their second unit (an area of concern right now) and Fields is a guy that you hope can be ready to contribute. 2. REGGIE JACKSON (Thunder): Talk about a guy whos on the radar this year in OKC. With the trade of James Harden and the free agent departure of Kevin Martin to the Timberwolves, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook will need some heavy perimeter support to make up the difference and keep their team at a high level. In his third NBA season out of Boston College, this is the year you have your fingers crossed his level of play is elevated and reliable. Hes got solid versatility in his game, has decent shot making ability and hell compete for you on the defensive end. Now its all got to come together and quick. Usually in the third pro season you find out an awful lot about a guy with the growth of his skills, strength, and basketball IQ. You focus on his dedication and overall makeup and whether hes got what it takes to take that next step. Time has arrived and hes going to get a shot each night. Take advantage. 3. LA CLIPPERS: The Clippers have decided to cover the Lakers Championship banners and retired numbers when they play their home games at the Staples Center. This has caused quite a stir and to be perfectly frank it should have happened the day they started playing games at the arena. Theyve been the JV team in LA for too long and they owe the Lakers organization and their former greats absolutely nothing. Theyre a tenant of the arena just like the Lakers and can do whatever theyd like when its their building. Its their money and their time. I always wondered why they would ever even acknowledge the other team. This is competition; its ruthless and thats the way it would be if the shoe was on the other foot, thats for sure. 4. CHARLIE VILLANUEVA (Pistons): Villanueva will be starting his ninth NBA season next week and the question is if hell ever play at a consistently productive level as a pro. Hes coming off two poor seasons in Detroit where he averaged 7 ppg and 3.5 rpg while shooting an abysmal 38% from the field for a lousy team. Are you part of the solution or part of the problem? Ill never forget a conversation I had with an NBA College Scouting Director when he was a player at UConn. He said that Villanueva would end up playing for at least 4-5 NBA teams and be one of those guys that youd be fascinated by his skills and potential and yet always be frustrated that you never got the high level nights enough. After former Raptors GM Rob Babcock drafted him in controversial fashion hes had stints as well with the Bucks and now the Pistons. I like him, hes a good guy and not a problem player, yet hes just not getting it done. At age 29, its time. Now or never. 5. THOMAS ROBINSON (Blazers): Robinson is in his second season and already on his third NBA team after playing his rookie year in Sacramento and Houston. Is this another guy who will bounce around and not fulfill his potential? Honestly, I dont know yet. He averaged an underwhelming 4.8 ppg and 4.5 rpg in his rookie year; thats not going to make anyone happy for a lottery pick out of Kansas. I liked him in college yet I was a bit concerned with his size and still unpolished game. He reminds me of Truck Robinson (Im dating myself!) who had a good career (15 and 9) in his best days with Washington, Phoenix and New York. He needs to focus on being a terror on the glass and the other stuff will work itself out. Hell get a shot at good playing time in Portland and Blazers fans will hope the light comes on this season and he takes that significant jump as a player. RALEIGH, N.C. — The Edmonton Oilers used a late-power-play goal to get a hard-fought road victory. Justin Schultz scored with the man advantage at 9:01 of the third period and the Edmonton Oilers earned a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. David Perron and Taylor Hall had the assists on Schultzs ninth goal of the season as part of his third multi-point game of the season. “Yeah, it was a good road effort for us,” Shultz said. “We battled hard all game.” Matt Hendricks opened the scoring at 6:43 of the first to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead. Boyd Gordon and Schultz had the assists on Hendricks fifth goal of the season. The goal was his first since Feb. 3, and third with Edmonton after being acquired from Nashville on Jan. 15. Hendricks outskated Hurricanes defenceman Ryan Murphy to the puck behind the Carolina net and attempted to pass it back to Edmonton centre Anton Lander. The puck deflected off Hurricanes defenceman Jay Harrisons stick as he trailed to defend on the play and the puck ended up behind Khudobin to give Edmonton the early lead. Edmonton goalie Ben Scrivens made 29 saves for the win. “Hes been great,” Hendricks said of Scrivens performance. “Our tandem (of goalies) has been outstanding. Since I got here, goaltending has been number one, the backbone of this team, and it continued again tonight.” Khudobin made 31 saves for the Hurricanes while the Oilers dominated play throughout the early part of the first period. Carolinas Jordan Staal tied it at 1-1 with 17.2 seconds remaining in the opening period as his brother Eric Staal and defenceman Justin Faulk helped set up the play. It was Staals 14th goal of the season and extended his point streak to six games, giving him thrree goals and six assists during that span.dddddddddddd Staals shot attempt was deflected high toward Scrivens after it caromed of Perrons stick as he tried to block it. As Scrivens effort to slap the puck away with his blocker was ineffective, Staal batted it past him and into the net to tie the game. “It was a great team effort,” Oilers coach Dallas Eakins said. “I thought our penalty kill sparked us. Theres a lot of sacrifice out there blocking those shots and it really got our bench ignited, and finally our power play was able to chip in and win us the game.” Edmonton finished 1 for 4 on the power play and Carolina was 0 for 3. The Hurricanes continued ineffectiveness with the power play left coach Kirk Muller struggling to explain it. “Weve changed personnel around, tried guys in different positions, but at the end of the day, its just not getting results,” Muller said. “Obviously, it hasnt been there. At the end of the day, you just (gotta) get the job done.” Despite the loss, the Hurricanes are trying to stay positive. “Its frustrating,” Jordan Staal said. “Theres times when we play so well and do a lot of good things, playing smart and doing those things. Then there are times when its just not working. Its frustrating for sure.” Notes: Hurricanes forward Radek Dvorak did not return to play in the third period, suffering an upper body injury. … At puck drop, Carolinas Jiri Tlusty was scratched with a lower-body injury which moved Nathan Gerbe into his spot on a line with Jordan Staal and Alexander Semin. … Defenceman Mike Komisarek was also a healthy scratch and John-Michael Liles remained out with a concussion, missing his fifth straight game for the Hurricanes. He still found a way to end the New Orleans Pelicans three-game winning streak. Nowitzki scored 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and had the last of his season-high four blocked shots on a crucial possession in the final minute as the Mavericks beat the Pelicans 100-97 at the start of a four-game road trip. Nowitzki gave Dallas the lead with a free throw to make the score 98-97 with 32.3 seconds left. He then got a piece of Eric Gordons driving floater, grabbed the rebound and hit two more free throws with 8 seconds left. “It could have gone either way,” Nowitzki said. “Finally, we were on the other end one time in execution and getting some stops and getting some big rebounds. It was definitely a good one to get against a very good team.” Nowitzki ran off a long list of negatives that could have cost the Mavericks the game. The Pelicans outrebounded them 58-38. He felt he forced some bad shots in the first half when he was double-teamed, connecting on only 2 of 7 instead of finding the open man. He even missed two free throws after hitting an NBA-best 86 of 91 before Wednesday. The Mavericks also messed up their final defensive possession, giving New Orleans forward Ryan Anderson a wide-open look to tie the score. Anderson, who entered as the NBAs second-most-accurate 3-point shooter at 55.6 per cent, missed it with 2 seconds left. “We switched at the end and left him open,” Nowitzki said. “I dont know what happened. He had a clean look from the top of the key, which he probably makes eight out of 10, so we really dodged a bullet.” Reserve Vince Carter had 15 points for Dallas and Monta Ellis added 14 points, with the other three starters scoring between 10 and 12. Jrue Holiday had a season-high 26 points for the Pelicans, who played without injured forward Anthony Davis for the second consecutive game. Al-Farouq Aminu tied his career high with 20 rebounds and added a season-high 16 points. Anderson finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds. The Mavericks won with balance for three quarters and Nowitzki taking over down the stretch. No play was bigger than his block of Gordon in the lane. He had not blocked more than one shot in any game this year. “Tell them youre a shot blocker now,” Carter said jokinglly as Nowitzki talked in the locker room.dddddddddddd “We have a lot of guys doing a lot of things to try to take the pressure off of him so he doesnt feel he has to put up big numbers every quarter,” Carter added. “It can wear him down. Now fourth quarter he can do what he does best.” The Pelicans, who outscored opponents by 25 points in the second half while going 3-0 on their recently concluded road trip, tried to pull away in the third quarter with an 8-0 run to go up 73-65 late in the quarter. But the Mavericks answered with a 10-2 spurt, getting 3-pointers from Jae Crowder and Carter. Dallas stayed hot at the start of the fourth. Nowitzki scored on a turnaround to give the Mavericks a 79-77 lead, converted a 3-point play on a tough shot and hit a free throw after the Pelicans were called for a defensive 3-second violation as Dallas went ahead 83-77. That lead didnt last long. Holiday sank a 3-pointer to tie the score at 86 with 6:49 left. Nowitzki hit a face-up midrange shot to give Dallas a 97-94 lead before Holiday sank a long 3-pointer to tie the score at 97, setting up Nowitzkis finish. “Its not very often you win on the road getting pounded on the glass by 20 boards,” Nowitzki said. “But well definitely take it.” Without Davis, New Orleans could not extend its winning streak to four games for the first time since Jan. 5-11 of 2013. In Davis absence, Aminu was more aggressive than usual. Averaging 5.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, he had a double-double by halftime (10 points, 11 rebounds) of his first in a full game this season. He finished the half with a soaring dunk off a nice pass from Holiday and a reverse layup around Nowitzki. “I always grade myself off wins and losses,” Aminu said. “It really doesnt matter what I do. Its a disappointing night.” NOTES: Davis talked to reporters before the game for the first time since he fractured the fifth metacarpal when he hit his hand on the rim against the New York Knicks on Sunday. “Of course its frustrating,” he said. “You want to be on the floor. But at the same time, theres nothing you can do about it.” . Calderon started for Dallas after being listed as day to day with a bruised right ankle. . Neither team led by double digits at any time in the game. . New Orleans, which fell to 9-9, has not been two games above .500 since starting 2-0 in 2011-12. Kevin Shattenkirk scored the game-winner for the Blues on the power play with just 3:02 left in the third period. Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien was sent off for hooking with 3:26 to play in the third period, and the Blues wasted little time in breaking a 1-1 deadlock. Derek Roy fed across to Shattenkirk at the left point, and his shot changed direction en route to the net and floated over Winnipeg netminder Ondrej Pavelec. “I thought the game was … a chess match played game early,” said Jets head coach Claude Noel. “They ended up scoring a seeing-eye, power-play goal, so what can you do?” Bryan Little scored the lone goal for the Jets, while Pavelec made 18 saves in a losing effort. Téma: Jak postupovat / top Ian Desmonds fieldi PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida – Aaron Sanchez was so impressive on Friday afternoon against the Rays big league line-up, he had Tampa Bays hitters giving him props to catcher Dioner Navarro. “Theyve never seen him,” said Navarro. “Theyve never faced him and they get this young, lanky, tall guy whos throwing cheese and hes got pretty good movement. I think his composure on the mound was pretty good, his demeanour was pretty good, his body language, everything around him was pretty good today.” Sanchez played the role of top prospect, shutting out the Rays over five-and-a-third innings in Torontos 5-0 win. He allowed three hits, all singles, and walked three, but helped his cause be forcing three double-play balls. One each came off the bats of Evan Longoria and Wil Myers. Sanchez struck out two, his fastball was clocked consistently in the mid-90s and his patented curveball was sharp. “It was extremely impressive, theres no doubt about it,” said pitching coach Pete Walker. “He came out throwing strikes. He was composed. Faced their line-up, Im sure close to their opening day line-up, faced all their big hitters and certainly handled them pretty well. Pounded the zone, got ahead of the hitters, didnt work from behind in the count, showed an explosive fastball and, like I said, a lot of poise and a lot of ground-ball outs.” Watching Sanchez pitch on Saturday, its easy to fall in love with his stuff, his composure, and easy to forget about where he is in his career. The Blue Jays have taken great care, some would say too much care, since drafting him 34th-overall in 2010. Hes only 21, turns 22 on Canada Day, and hasnt thrown a pitch in pro ball above High-A Dunedin. Sanchez hasnt exceeded 100 innings in three pro seasons, although factoring in Arizona Fall League appearances, combined with his time in Dunedin, he tossed 109 2/3 last year. If the Blue Jays increase his innings load by 20 per cent this year, hed throw approximately 130. A 30 per cent increase and Sanchez would throw about 140 innings. He authored a 3.34 ERA in 22 appearances, 20 starts, for Dunedin in 2013. His strikeouts per nine innings dropped to 7.8, but that was by design. Hes worked to become a better ground ball pitcher, which was evidenced by the double play turns in Fridays game. Its tempting for a coaching staff that can see the future but knows another failed season likely means it wont be a part of it; a coaching staff which knows theres at least one glaring hole in the current composition of its starting rotation. “I guess it would be hard not to just from watching and laying eyes on him,” said Walker of whether he thinks about Sanchez breaking camp. “But obviously we want to make sure hes ready when the time comes.” Hes an affable young man, but also smart. Sanchez doesnt make much noise around the clubhouse; he knows his role as a young player. Hes the Blue Jays top pitching prospect but restricts the projection of swagger and confidence to his mound appearances. “Its good to get my feet wet,” said Sanchez of his first big league camp. “Coming into camp, for me, it was to soak everything all in, learn from the veteran guys, just go out and have fun.” “I think some of the intangible things that you try to look for in young players in an atmosphere that can be uncomfortable at times, you know, is he so reserved? Is he getting involved in the drills and some of the meetings? Hes handled himself very well and that says a lot about his character and who he is,” said bench coach DeMarlo Hale, who served as manager on Friday. It remains to be seen whether Sanchez will throw again for the Blue Jays in spring training. Walker will sit down with manager John Gibbons and draw up a schedule. Sanchez likely starts his season at Double-A New Hampshire. A good showing there and its next stop, Buffalo. Or, maybe, Toronto. THE PIGGYBACK Theres been open musing in the press box about the idea of Dustin McGowan joining R.A. Dickey, Brandon Morrow, Mark Buehrle and Drew Hutchison in the starting rotation. Why not cap McGowan at four or five innings as he builds up arm strength and piggyback him with one of two long relievers, either Esmil Rogers or Todd Redmond? “Still trying to sort through it,” said pitching coach Pete Walker when presented with the idea. “Obviously, theres still some time left in spring training. Guys are going to get the ball; get their opportunities to stand out right now. Obviously, Dustin looked great yesterday and Sanchez looked great today and the other guys, Redmond and Rogers, have thrown the ball well. Obviously, wed like to see [J.A.] Happ pitch well on the 25th and well continue to take a look at how it works out.” Walker didnt have the opportunity to speak to McGowan before leaving for Port Charlotte, but said reports are the 31-year-old “felt fine” after throwing three scoreless innings against the Phillies on Thursday. TUIASOSOPOS NUMBERS General manager Alex Anthopoulos ist shy about scouring the waiver wire for players. On Thursday, he picked up Matt Tuiasosopo from the Diamondbacks. “Played well for the Tigers last year and we had good reports on him,” said Anthopoulos in a statement. “He gives us a right-handed bat that gives us positional versatility. Obviously, there isnt a lot of time left but hell come in and compete for a spot.” Time is of the essence and Tuiasosopo is going to need more of it than usual to join the ballclub. He was in Australia, where the Diamondbacks are opening their regular season with two games against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Its difficult to see, on the surface, where Tuiasosopo fits in. Hes a right-handed bat who got off to a strong start with the Tigers last season, hitting six of his seven home runs before the All-Star break, including four in a personal five-game span between June 18 and July 11. He can play the corner outfield positions, first base and third base in a pinch. “Youre talking about, maybe, from the right side where there could be an option there,” said bench coach DeMarlo Hale. Tuiasosopo hasnt proven he can hit left-handers at the big league level. In 194 at-bats against lefties, Tuiasosopo has hit .196/.287/.345 with eight home runs. Against right-handers, his slash line is .221/.287/.368. Over his major league career, Tuiasosopo has struck out in 31.7 per cent of his big league at-bats. By comparison, while acknowledging the sample size is small, Moises Sierra hits left-handers at a .267/.327/.478 clip with four home runs. “Decisions havent been made, Im sure of that,” said Hale. "I cant speak for Alex and Gibby, but it becomes added depth and well see what hes got over these next four or five days left of spring training.” Like Sierra, Tuiasosopo is out of options, meaning he would first have to pass through waivers before being assigned to the minor leagues. If the Blue Jays go with an eight-man bullpen to start the season, carrying both is out of the question. The back-up catcher, likely Erik Kratz, and Maicer Izturis must be accounted for, which leaves only one additional roster spot. The agreement Thursday was for $5,000 above the midpoint between the $2.4 million he had asked for and the $1.6 million the Indians had offered when the sides exchanged arbitration figures last month. Washington, DC (Sports Network) – Roy Halladay overcame a shaky ninth inning to toss his 59th career complete game, as the Philadelphia Phillies edged the Washington Nationals, 3-2, in the middle installment of a three-game series at Nationals Park. Halladay took the mound in the ninth aiming for his 20th shutout, but gave up a leadoff double to Rick Ankiel, who advanced to third on a Jayson Werth single. After Adam LaRoche struck out, Laynce Nix and Danny Espinosa stroked consecutive RBI singles before Halladay fanned both pinch-hitter Matt Stairs and Ivan Rodriguez to end the game. You always remain confident with a guy like Roy on the mound, said Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard when asked if there was panic in the ninth inning. It was his game to win or lose. Halladay (2-0) allowed only two hits through the first eight innings and finished with nine strikeouts. Placido Polanco went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI for the Phillies, who improved to 8-3 on the young season. John Lannan (1-1) surrendered three runs — two earned — on six hits in six innings for Washington, which had won four of its previous five games. We battled to the end, Lannan said. We didnt make it easy for them. The Phillies put their first two batters of the game on base but failed to score.dddddddddddd. Philadelphia threatened again in the third when Wilson Valdez singled and Shane Victorino drew a one-out walk. Polanco, though, grounded into an inning-ending double play. Washington stranded two runners in the home third. Alert base running by Jimmy Rollins helped the Phillies grab a 1-0 lead. Rollins, leading off the fourth, reached on shortstop Ian Desmonds fielding error. Howard then hit a grounder to the right side and was thrown out at first. Because the Nationals employed a defensive shift, third base was left unoccupied. Knowing this, Rollins hustled around second, but had his path impeded by Desmond, who was called for interference. Rollins was awarded third and came home on a groundout by Ben Francisco. Philadelphias first two batters were aboard in the fifth, and this time the visitors took advantage as Polancos two-out single plated Valdez. After Rollins singled to load the bases, Lannan hit Howard with a pitch to make it 3-0. Lannan retired Francisco on a fly ball to limit the damage to only two runs. GAME NOTES:Halladay, who issued two walks, has now won each of his last 11 starts against National League East opponents…Both teams had six hits. Téma: Jak postupovat / e family-farm with him (in Foxwa HARRISON, N.J. — Needing to win by three goals, Guatemala coach Ever Hugo Almeida told his players to ignore the big picture and focus on one at a time. They made it — with one to spare. Marco Pappa had a goal and an assist and Guatemala beat Grenada 4-0 Monday night to clinch its first trip to the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-finals since 2007. “More than anything, this was a psychological and mental game,” Almeida said. “We had to score a specific number of goals. We needed three goals, but we had to take it goal by goal. We were able to manage the game and get the result we wanted.” Jose Del Aguila, Carlos Ruiz and Carlos Gallardo also scored for Guatemala, which finished finish third in Group B after Jamaica beat Honduras 1-0 later in the evening. Guatemala had a plus-2 goal difference to top Group As third-place finisher, El Salvador, which also had four points but an even goal difference. Guatemala, ranked No. 124 in the world, will not know where it will play until Wednesday, when Group C finishes. The results also will determine whether El Salvador advances. Canada will play Panama and the United States will face Guadaloupe in Tuesdays games. Guatemala either will play Saturday at the New Meadowlands Stadium or Sunday at RFK Stadium in Washington. That didnt worry Pappa. “Now, we have to think about the next match,” the Chicago Fire forward said. No matter what happens in the knockout round, Almeida said the team has achieved all its goals heading into the Gold Cup competition. “At this moment, were very happy,” Almeida said. “We were able to qualify, and thats what we came for. Now well wait and see who we play, whoever it is.” Guatemala lost 3-0 to Canada in its previous appearance in the Gold Cup quarter-finals. But it capped a 1-1-1 performance in this years group competition with a stellar showing against 98th-ranked Grenada. Del Aguila and Pappa scored in the first half. Jairo Arreolas shot went off the crossbar and Ruiz knocked it in to make it 3-0 in the 54th minute. Pappa fed Gallardo from the side of the box for a shot past goalkeeper Shemel Louison in the 59th minute. Grenada finished last in Group B, losing all three of its games by a combined score of 15-1. It has been outscored 25-1 in two Gold Cup competitions. “We realistically felt we could get third place and get into the quarter-final through the back door,” Grenada coach Mike Adams said. “But the intensity the game is played at this level came as a big surprise to us. Its a big step up from the Caribbean Cup. It was a case of not being able to sustain it.” cheap soccer jerseys from china . Falloons goal at 15:01 of overtime sealed the Yorkton Terriers first RBC Cup championship with a 4-3 victory over the Carleton Place Canadians. He jammed in a rebound to cap Yorktons comeback from a 3-1 deficit with less than three minutes left in regulation time. “Its unbelievable. Its just the best feeling and I dont think Ill ever score a bigger goal than that for the rest of my life,” said Falloon, 21, who has used up his junior eligibility. Falloons goal gave the Terriers their first Canadian Junior A championship in their fifth trip to the tournament. Yorkton placed second to the Burnaby Express, led by current Ottawa Senators centre Kyle Turris, in their last trip to the RBC Cup in Streetsville, Ont., in 2006. The Terriers had finished no better than third in their three other trips, all in the 1990s. The puck barely crossed the line as Carleton Place goaltender Guillaume Therien attempted to cover it. While the crowd waited, the referee confirmed it was a goal. After trailing 3-1 at the end of the second period, the Terriers forced overtime with goals from Tanner Lishchynsky and Dylan Johnson eight seconds apart in the last three minutes of the third period. Daylan Gatzke had Yorktons other goal and Kale Thompson made 31 saves. Anthony McVeigh, Stephen Baylis and Andy Sturtz scored for the Canadians while Therien stopped 42 shots in the losing effort. Falloons overtime winner was his second of the tournament. He also scored in extra time against Dauphin in the round robin. “I guess I just happened to be at the right place at the right time,” said Falloon. “Im sure any of the boys could have (done) it. Lucky me, I guess.” Falloon missed the first three games of this tournament with his third concussion of the season, suffered in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoffs. He missed most of the Western Canadian championship tournament, from which Yorkton qualified for the RBC Cup. Yorkton coach Don Chesney said Falloons return brought life to Yorktons lineup. “He has a flair for the dramatic,” said Chesney. “I joked around (saying) his first (overtime goal) didnt make the back of the net. (The RBC Cup-winning) one, I think, made it — maybe a few inches over the goal-line. But in 10, 20 years, thatll be the nicest goal he ever scored and the biggest goal he ever scored.” Johnson also provided some drama as his tying goal, at 17:20 of the third period atoned for an interference penalty he took at 14:05. “To bee honest, when we got that penalty with five minutes left, it was not looking too good, and they shut us down pretty good,” said Chesney.dddddddddddd “We didnt create a lot of high-quality scoring chances.” Added Johnson: “That (goal) felt great, especially after getting that penalty a couple minutes before that. Getting that goal was unreal. It brought the life back into the fans. After we got that, we knew this was ours.” Until then, the Canadians had a good reason to think they would claim the crown in their first RBC Cup appearance. “Looking back on it now, maybe I should have called a timeout after the second goal,” said Carleton Place coach Jason Clarke. “But weve just been so resilient all year. Things didnt really seem to bother us.” Baylis put the Canadians ahead 2-1 at 4:12 of the second period as he fired a shot from the slot after his teammates fought to keep the puck in at the blue-line along the boards with little space to work with. Sturtz increased the Carleton Place advantage midway through the second, stealing the puck from a Terrier in one corner and skating to the opposite side to put in a backhand. But just when it looked like the Canadians could begin to rest easy, Lishchynsky and Johnson sent the game to overtime, setting up Falloons special moment. “Were proud (of getting to the final), but its a sour taste, for sure,” said Clarke. Falloon received advice from his cousin Pat Falloon, the former NHLer who was drafted second overall by the San Jose Sharks after Eric Lindros in 1991. “(Pat) was talking to my dad,” said Falloon. “We family-farm with him (in Foxwarren, Man.) We keep in touch with him. He was texting my dad and telling me to keep calm and just do what I can do.” The RBC Cup adds a second Canadian junior crown to the extended Falloon family. Pat Falloon won a Memorial Cup with the Spokane Chiefs in 1991, when he was named the tournaments most valuable player. “Ive heard stories,” said the younger Falloon. Falloons hockey future is far from certain. He only knows how he will spend his summer. “Were just going to celebrate, and then Im going to go back (home),” he said. “Ive got to get to work on the farm.” Notes: The game marked the first time in 19 years that the Canadian Junior A final went to overtime. … Los Angeles Kings centre Jarret Stoll sent a congralutory tweet to Yorkton for reaching the final. Stoll grew up in the Yorkton/Melville area. a Yorkton assistant coach John Odgers is the son of former NHLer Jeff Odgers. Téma: Jak postupovat / the goal, Brennan became t SANDY, Utah — A feral second-half attack led to an improbable comeback for the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Whitecaps scored two goals in the final eight minutes to steal a 2-2 tie at Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. Nicolas Mezquidas first career goal in the 86th minute cut the deficit in half and set the stage for fellow Uruguaian Sebastian Fernandez, who scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to stun the home crowd and earn the result. Real Salt Lake (3-0-5), the leagues remaining unbeaten team, jumped ahead 2-0 in the games first nine minutes on goals by Joao Plata and Alvaro Saborio. But the Whitecaps (2-2-4) again showed some second-half magic. “Its a get out of jail card, I believe,” Vancouver coach Carl Robinson said. “We were 2-0 down and dug ourselves a hole, but we learned from that. Weve shown if we go behind, the games not over.” Fernandezs shot from about 40 yards out beat goalkeeper Nick Rimando in the lower right corner of the net. It was a dramatic capper to an unlikely turn of events that began moments earlier when Saborio held possession. The Salt Lake forward dribbled in space near midfield, in what appeared to be the start to an offensive rush that would, if nothing else, run out the games final seconds. But Vancouver defender Steven Beitashour tackled the ball away and to the foot of Fernandez, who scored his second goal of the season. “I got the ball and knew it was going to be one of the last plays of the game,” Fernandez said through an interpreter. “I got it, hit it, and it went in.” Said Beitashour: “I was on the floor when I saw Seba take it, and hes got a rocket. I think everyone behind him was yelling Shoot! Shoot! I had a good angle from the floor, and that ball moved on (Rimando).” Vancouver, which earned a point for the first time in four games, was stunned by the early deficit and “played fearful” in the first half, according to Robinson. After the break, the Whitecaps sent wave after wave at Rimando, and looked to be a different squad. Robinson went to his bench to provide a spark, sending Fernandez and Mezquida each in shortly after halftime. Vancouvers challenge now comes in finding consistency throughout a full 90 minutes — a task Robinson acknowledged after the game. “Its a challenge when youve got a group of young players, which is what I have,” Robinson said. “They played with fear in the first half. I dont want them to play with fear. I put demands on players because I know how good they can be, but theyve got to start believing. The promotion paid off as Kozun picked up the insurance maker and the Marlies defeated the reigning Calder Cup champion Grand Rapids Griffins 4-1 on Friday, “It was nice that we could slot him right up there and that was a huge goal because Grand Rapids was coming late,” said Spott. "That seemed to quiet them a little bit because the fire power, the ability to turn over pucks in transition, theyre going to come at you hard and that was a big goal by Brandon. “I know he needed it personally, its good for his confidence and it was a timely goal for our team.” Kozun restored Torontos two-goal lead at 12:05 of the third period, beating Mrazek stick-side for his 13th of the season. The goal was Kozuns third and seventh point in eight games since he was acquired from the Manchester Monarchs. “Well when (injuries) happen, everyones got to step up their game, play together as a team, I think this team has been doing it all year and youve got to play as a team to beat a team like that,” said Kozun. "Theyre obviously the reigning champions and everyone came to play tonight and it was a good one. T.J. Brennan, Josh Leivo and Jerry DAmigo had the other goals for the Marlies, who won for the third time in four games. The win moves Toronto (28-15-4) two points back of the second-place Griffins (29-15-4) in the AHLs Western Conference. Landon Ferraro replied for Grand Rapids, which has just one win in the last five games. Grand Rapids out-shot Toronto 34-12 in the finall 40 minutes, but could not get another one past Drew MacIntyre, who made 41 saves for his league-leading 21st win of the season.dddddddddddd Petr Mrazek made 23 saves for the Griffins. “Youre playing the reigning Calder Cup champions and you know theyre going to come, youre up two goals, you lose arguably your best forward in Spencer Abbott and a great shutdown player in Tyler Biggs so there is absolutely nothing left in the tank,” said Spott. “We have to go easy (Saturday) and weve got to find a way to, with our tank almost on E, to get another 60 minutes out of these guys on Sunday. Theres not a lot left.” Brennan opened the scoring with his 20th goal of the season on the power play at 1:17 of the second period, beating Mrazek with a wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle. With the goal, Brennan became the first defenceman to score 20 goals in a single season since Johnny Boychuck did it with the Providence Bruins in the 2008-2009 season. The Marlies added to their lead at 4:01 of the period when Leivo stepped out of the corner and beat Mrazek from the slot for his 10th. Ferraro pulled the Griffins to within one as he one-timed a Jeff Hoggan pass past MacIntyre at 8:20 of the second period DAmigo added an empty netter for his 10th of the season with 1:09 remaining. In addition to Abbott, who left the game with a lower body injury, the Marlies also lost forward Biggs. Spott said he would have a better idea on the condition of both players Saturday.
