Téma: Jak postupovat / clear into the area in WE MISS ARTIE TOPS QUEENS PLATE FIELD Ken and Sarah Ramseys We Miss Artie, winner of the Plate Trial on June 15, has been installed as the 8-5 morning line choice in a field of 15 for the $1 million Queens Plate, Canadas most famous horse race, Sunday at Woodbine. The 155th edition of the Plate for Canadian-foaled three-year-olds, the oldest continuously run stakes race in North America, will be televised live on TSN in HD (High Definition) in a special presentation from 4:30 – 6:00 pm ET. Post time is 5:38 pm. The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Right Honourable David C. Onley, will be the Royal Guest of Honour. All starters carry 126 pounds, except the lone filly Lexie Lou, who will tote 121 pounds for the mile and one-quarter classic over Woodbines Polytrack. The winner will receive $600,000. At the Queens Plate breakfast on Thursday morning, the selection order for post positions was drawn first via the traditional pill-pull, followed by the choosing of post positions by the connections for each horse, a system which has been in place for the Plate since 1998. We Miss Artie (PP6, 8-5), trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Javier Castellano, proved a comfortable winner of the Trial by three-quarters of a length over Majestic Sunset, his first outing at Woodbine and his first start since a 10th place finish, just eight and one-quarter lengths behind California Chrome in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 3. Hell try to become the 26th Plate Trial winner since 1944 to win the Plate, the last being Big Red Mike in 2010. “I think my horse ran really well (in the Trial),” said owner Ken Ramsey, after choosing post six with the second selection. “(Jockey Javier) Castellano said he was saving himself for the Queens Plate. Hes doing exceptionally well (at Saratoga).” For More on the Plate field, click here: http://weg.bz/1qTCwcJ EIGHTY NINE RED SURPRISES IN ACHIEVEMENT There were only five horses in the co-featured $150,000 Achievement Stakes, Saturday at Woodbine. And Eighty Nine Red was the longest price of the bunch, sent postward a 16-1 outsider. No problem. Ridden by Jesse Campbell for trainer Mike DePaulo, Eighty Nine Red, tucked along the rail, stalked the pace of favoured Flashy Margaritta, then came out turning for home and prevailed in a stretch drive, taking the six furlong event for Ontario-bred three-year-olds by one length in 1:10.28. Flashy Margaritta, who had cranked out reasonable fractions of :22.97 and :45.67, held on for place, while Spadina Road closed for third. Owned by John Russell and George Schramm, the son of Bold Executive-Timeless Silver had opened his 2014 campaign in style, easily winning a five furlong allowance contest. But after a third place finish to Speightsong in the seven furlong Queenston, then a seventh place finish to Flashy Margaritta in the turf, six furlong Bold Ruckus, Eighty Nine Red returned to the Polytrack and prevailed. “I was a little worried going into the (far) turn. It was pretty tight. (Jockey) Patrick (Husbands, aboard Flashy Margaritta) was doing his job, doing what I would have done,” said Campbell. “I loved the way this horse responded today. I had high hopes for this horse all along. He put it all together today. He really ran a good race.” Eighty Nine Red had been kept eligible for the Queens Plate but his connections decided to shorten him up. Added DePaulo, “Jesse did a great job. The horse ran on and we got it done. Being by Bold Executive, there havent been too many who have run that far (the Queens Plate distance of a mile and one-quarter). Hopefully hell make a real good sprinter for us.” Eighty Nine Red paid $34.90, $9.90 and $3.30, combining with Flashy Margaritta ($3.50, $2.20) for a $119.80 (1-2) exactor. A 1-2-5 (Spadina Road, $2.70) triactor was worth $287.40. STACKED DECK ACES THE CHARLIE BARLEY Bruce Lunsfords homebred Stacked Deck, with Chantal Sutherland-Kruse, made his seasonal debut a winning one, hanging on to defeat Speightsland in the co-featured $100,000 Charlie Barley Stakes, Saturday at Woodbine. The one mile tilt on the lawn for three-year-olds drew an excellent field of nine, with Speightsong, the Queenston Stakes winner and multiple stakes winner Jose Sea View vying for favouritism. Dismissed at 14-1, Stacked Deck, trained by Barb Minshall, stalked the pacesetting Tuscan Getaway until the turn into the long E.P. Taylor Turf Course stretch. The now gelded son of First Samurai-Bel Air Beauty took over in mid-stretch, opened a length, then was all out to hold off another longshot, 16-1 Speightland, for the nose victory in 1:33.45. Florida Won was a close third, a length behind. Tuscan Getaway had set all the fractions over a lightning fast turf course, :22.99, :45.42, and 1:09.10, while being pursued by Stacked Deck, before giving way.“Thankfully my horse had something left over,” said Sutherland-Kruse. “The plan wasnt really to be that close. We were hoping for a stalking trip. We broke well. I didnt think he had much left turning for home, but he kind of foolS you.” Added owner Bruce Lunsford, who also raced the sire and the dam, “Barbara did a tremendous job bringing this horse back. To win this race off the bench after we couldnt get an allowance race to go, we think weve got big things ahead of us with this horse.” “Hes a great horse,” said Minshall. “Hes a smart horse, so clever.” Stacked Deck had three starts last year, two on the grass, but he broke his maiden in his final outing over Woodbines Polytrack. Pepe, Jese Rodriguez, and Angel Di Maria all scored as Madrid won a bad-tempered crosstown derby 3-0 to humble Atletico on Wednesday, three days after it took the outright league lead, with only its second loss of the season and first in 23 matches. Barcelona did its part to increase the chances of a clasico in the April 19 final by beating 10-man Sociedad 2-0 at the Camp Nou. Pepe spent much of the game riling up Atletico striker Diego Costa after putting Madrid ahead in the 17th minute at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium where his shot deflected off defender Emiliano Insua past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The hosts dominated the tetchy derby as Courtois made a string of first-half saves before Jese Rodriguez broke through in the 57th as the young striker continued his impressive season by using a quick touch to guide Angel Di Marias pass under the Belgium keeper. Diego Costas frustrations got the better of him as a yellow card in the 61st means Atleticos leading scorer will miss the return leg next week, which leaves the attack depleted with David Villa also expected to be sidelined by injury. With Gareth Bale out for the second straight game and Cristiano Ronaldo strangely subdued, Di Maria capped a productive night with a goal from another deflected shot in the 73rd. It came just after Luka Modric cleared Diego Godins header off the goal-line for Atleticos lone scoring opportunity. Madrid has yet to concede in eight domestic cup matches this season. “Everybody was fantastic, we did everything very well,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said after Madrid ttook a page out of Atleticos book and played with his pressure to keep the visitors from getting any time on the ball.dddddddddddd “We showed we can excel in these types of contests.” Atleticos first defeat since October came three days after it took over the league lead outright for the first time since 1996. “We didnt come through and play the kind of game we wanted to. Its unfortunate but there is still the return leg,” Atletico midfielder Koke said. Sociedads intentions were clear as the Basque side sat back and tried to weather Barcelonas pressure and strike on the counter, but goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto kicked Carlos Velas shot as the Sociedad striker managed an attempt with Javier Mascherano dragging him to the ground. “It should have been a penalty, and it would have changed the whole outlook of the game,” Vela said. “When (the referee) gives Barcelona an extra hand, its nearly impossible to beat them.” Sociedad goalie Enaut Zubikarai did well to deny Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi before watching a ball skip through the area onto the foot of Sergio Busquets to bounce inside the post in the 44th. Sociedad was reduced to 10 men after Inigo Martinez was shown his second yellow card for protesting the goal. Barcelona exploited the extra space as Alexis Sanchez was played clear into the area in the 60th but shot off the post, with Gorka Elustondo mystifyingly clearing the loose ball back into the area where it came off Zubikarai into goal. “We should have scored more goals after going a man up,” Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez said. “Both series look similar, although Madrid looks more in control of theirs.” Like Ronaldo, Messi was also muted until Zubikarai saved his leaping volley effort near the close. Téma: Jak postupovat / o had a 10-year playing career as a safet MARANA, Ariz. — Rory McIlroy was walking down the stairs toward the driving range when he passed Lee Westwood and gave him the same message he had delivered earlier Saturday in the Match Play Championship. “See you in the morning,” McIlroy said with a big smile. “Just like I told you.” In 14 years of this fickle tournament, there has never been a semifinal match so compelling. McIlroy had another surge on the back nine to put away Bae Sang-moon, 3 and 2. Moments later, Westwood finished off Martin Laird by the same margin, setting up a Sunday showdown with more at stake than just a spot in the championship match. If either McIlroy or Westwood goes on to win the Match Play Championship, they would go to No. 1 in the world. “I think with both of us being up there in the world, and both of us with the possibility of going to No. 1, it gives the match definitely an extra little bit of spice,” McIlroy said. The duel was not lacking spice in the first place. They were stablemates at International Sports Management until some testy exchanges last year. Shortly after McIlroy shot 80 in the final round of the Masters to blow a four-shot lead, Westwood got under his skin by saying the 22-year-old from Northern Ireland “has a pull hook in his bag under pressure.” But it was McIlroy who was the first to win a major, setting records at Congressional on his way to an eight-shot win in the U.S. Open. Later in the year, when McIlroy left Chubby Chandler at ISM, Westwood tweeted that it was a bizarre move. McIlroy quickly un-followed Westwood and Chandler on Twitter. Both players say their relationship is no different than with other golfers. They dont spend as much time together, understandable because they no longer have the same manager. “Theres nothing strained about the relationship between the two of us. Its still the same as it was,” Westwood said. “Rory said to me before I went out, See you tomorrow morning. And then today again there, he said, See, told you. Thats the trouble with kids nowadays. They think theyre always right, dont they?” A dull day in the desert ended with high anticipation for the final day. The championship match is at high noon. The McIlroy-Westwood duel gets under way as the sun begins to climb over the high desert. “I think its the match that most people wanted, and definitely the match that I wanted,” McIlroy said. The other semifinal match Sunday morning features Hunter Mahan and Mark Wilson, assuring an American will make it to the final for the first time since Tiger Woods won in 2008. Mahan played the shortest quarterfinal match in the 14-year history of the event by beating Matt Kuchar, 6 and 5. Wilson, gaining more respect the deeper he goes in the bracket, had an easy time in his 4-and-3 win over Peter Hanson of Sweden. The 18-hole championship match will start about an hour after the semifinals. With a strong breeze, firmer conditions, tough hole locations and only four quarterfinal matches, Saturday at Dove Mountain was lacking excitement. For the first time ever, none of the quarterfinals matches reached the 17th hole. McIlroy and Westwood saved the day. For starters, its the first time the Match Play Championship semifinals have featured two of the top four seeds since 2004, when Woods and Davis Love III advanced. McIlroy is No. 2, and Westwood is No. 3. Plus, theres that small matter of No. 1 in the world. Westwood already has been No. 1 in the world, and said his priority is picking up his first WGC title. McIlroy already is a major champion, and would become the second-youngest player behind Woods to reach No. 1 in the world. “My priorities were to win major championships and win World Golf Championships because I havent ever won any,” Westwood said. “Ive been at No. 1 couple of times. It would be a different way of thinking to me compared to Rory, who hasnt been No. 1. He may be thinking about it, but my main goal is to play well — or play as well as Ive been playing — tomorrow morning and try and win that match.” Getting to this stage has been relatively easy. McIlroy had to go to the 18th hole in the opening round, but has had little resistance since then. He took the lead for good over Bae with a birdie on the 11th hole, then stretched his advantage when Bae chopped up the 13th hole and missed the par-4 15th green on the wrong side and had to settle for par. Westwood had a tougher time Saturday, but not for long. He had led in 48 of the 49 holes he played through the opening three rounds, and fell behind immediately to Laird. But starting with Lairds bogey on the sixth, Westwood won four of the next five holes. He holed a 6-foot birdie putt to halve the 13th hole and stay 2 up, then seized command when Laird took three shots to get out of the bunker on the 14th before conceding. An All-American semifinal is not nearly as surprising as the players in the match. “I dont think too many people picked me to win,” Wilson said. He has a chance to win for the fourth time in 14 months, more than anyone on the PGA Tour in that time, but gets overlooked due to his medium-length off the tee. Wilson makes up for that with smart play and great putting, a deadly combination in this format. Even on the par 5s he couldnt reach at Dove Mountain, he played to the right angles and kept pressure on Hanson. Mahan escaped the opening round in 19 holes over Zach Johnson before bulling his way through the bracket with birdies. He only needed pars against Kuchar, whose belly putter went cold on him. Mahan, who won a WGC title at Firestone two years ago, won five holes with pars against Kuchar. He holed a 20-foot birdie putt on the ninth to go 5-up at the turn, then won the next hole when Kuchar again missed from 6 feet for par. “Matt couldnt find the putter today, which is rare for him, because hes a great putter,” Mahan said. “I got lucky in that aspect. But I played solid, didnt make any bogeys and didnt give many holes — and kept the pressure on him. That was nice to do.” . The Stars were up 3-1 in the third. Stars and Jets will meet at the MTS Centre Sunday night (TSN Jets, TSN 1290) in what is a must win for the Jets. The Jets and Stars will meet in Dallas later this month, the Stars have two games in hand. . |

Téma: Jak postupovat / s win a division title wi WINNIPEG — Buck Pierce wasnt out of football long. On Tuesday, the former quarterback retired following nine CFL campaigns. Three days later, he returned to Winnipeg — where he spent three-plus seasons — as the Blue Bombers running backs coach. Rookie head coach Mike OShea said Friday adding Pierce to his staff was a no-brainer. “When Buck retired, it came up as part of my multiple conversations per day with Kyle (Bombers GM Kyle Walters),” OShea said. "Then it went to how good a guy Buck is, his experience and the value of adding a CFL quarterback to our staff. “The running backs position hadnt been filled and its an entry-level position for guys who want to get into coaching and learn the daily rigours of becoming a professional football coach. Kyle and I got on the phone with Buck and he was very receptive. He wants to coach, he loves the CFL game and it just made sense on all levels to have Buck Pierce on our staff.” The six-foot-two, 195-pound Pierce began his CFL career with the B.C. Lions, spending five seasons in Vancouver before signing with Winnipeg as a free agent following the 09 season. Pierce, 32, remained with the Bombers until last September when he was traded back to B.C. Injuries limited Pierce to 67 starts in 125 career CFL games although he did post a solid 64.2 completion percentage, with 76 TDs and 63 interceptions. He also averaged 7.2 yards per rushing attempt with 14 touchdowns while also committing 18 fumbles. Despite being plagued by an assortment of injuries, there was never any question about Pierces heart, toughness or character. Regardless of the ailment, he always returned to the field for his teammates. And embarking on a coaching career in Winnipeg makes perfect sense. Not only did Pierce play for the Bombers, his fiancee is also from the Manitoba capital. But OShea, a former standout linebacker who became Torontos special-teams co-ordinator following his stellar career with the Argonauts, said becoming a coach can present challenges for some former players. “Im sure Buck recognized early in his career the coaches were there before he was and were there after he left,” OShea said. "Its always an eye-opener in terms of the planning and the number of tasks that are involved. “But as the staff comes together in the off-season and gets going through the daily routine and has the specific tasks theyre charged with Im sure hell get it all figured out quickly.” OShea believes adding a former CFL quarterback to his coaching staff will provide added benefits as well. “These guys play quarterback for a reason, they have the ability to take in all that information, process it and then put it all back out there,” OShea said. "Hell obviously do some work figuring out drills and finding out what his position group needs on a daily basis but hell also give that group a different perspective and understanding about how other positions are looking at the game and not just through the running backs eyes. “Any time a player can gain a better understanding of what the other positions are thinking out there is a good thing. That kind of knowledge only helps players produce.” Notes: The Bombers signed quarterback Robert Marve and receiver Mario Urrutia on Friday. The six-foot-one, 212-pound Marve played collegiately at Miami (2007-08) and Purdue (2010-2012). The six-foot-six, 238-pound Urrutia was a 2008 seventh-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals out of the University of Louisville. He also spent time with the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as well as the Arena Football Leagues Utah Blaze. Jerseys Cheap . “The opportunities are going to come,” he said Monday on a conference call from Slovenia, where the team was preparing for a friendly. In the eyes of Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, the two-time defending NBA champions pretty much botched the whole thing. http://www.cheapauthenticjerseys.us.com/. As the Toronto Argonauts prepare to face their hated enemies from down the QEW, the Hamilton Tiger Cats, in this Sundays Eastern Final, theyre faced with something they havent experienced all season – a healthy receiving corps.CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Bengals released linebacker James Harrison on Thursday, leaving the former Defensive Player of the Year looking for his third team in three seasons. The 35-year-old linebacker helped the Steelers win a pair of Super Bowls and was the leagues top defensive player in 2008. He left Pittsburgh when the two sides couldnt agree on a restructured deal. Harrison went down the Ohio River to AFC North rival Cincinnati, where he got a two-year contract. The Bengals envisioned him using his pass-rushing ability to become a difference-maker on a defence that was already one of the leagues best. He wound up with a limited role for the first half of the season as he got acclimated. Harrison was limited to 14 or fewer plays in five of the first seven games, making the transition from Pittsburghs 3-4 alignment to a 4-3 in Cincinnati. His role expanded as the season went along and injuries limited the defence. Harrison played in 15 games, starting 10, and finished 12th on the team in tackles. He had two sacks and one interception. “It was great for our coaches, players and fans to have James on our team last year,” coach Marviin Lewis said.dddddddddddd "Hes a player everyone looks up to because of his ability, his accomplishments and his drive to be the best. He helped us win a division title with his play and with the example he set. “Its time for us to go a different direction now, with some younger guys, but we will all still reap benefits from having had James with us as a Bengal last year.” Linebacker Vontaze Burfict credited Harrison with helping him develop into a Pro Bowl player last season. Cincinnatis defence finished third in the NFL and was the key to the Bengals reaching the playoffs for an unprecedented third straight season. The Bengals lost to San Diego in the opening round, leaving them 0-5 in the playoffs under Lewis. They havent won a playoff game since 1990, matching the sixth-longest streak of playoff futility in NFL history. Harrison tweeted: “Many thanks to all the Bengals fans for your support over the last year — I had a great time in Cincinnati.” Harrison is the second veteran in three days that was released by the team. Center Kyle Cook, who started all last season, was released on Tuesday. Téma: Jak postupovat / e the turnovers in the first half tha VANCOUVER — A feeble power play has sucked the life out of the Vancouver Canucks at times this season. Another night of missed chances left the door open for the Nashville Predators to capitalize on a man advantage of their own. Nick Spaling scored the winner on the power play midway through the third period Thursday as the Predators defeated the Canucks 2-1. Vancouvers 25th-ranked power play finished 0 for 5, including a four-minute man advantage in the first period that could have significantly altered the games complexion. Canucks defenceman Dan Hamhuis had a tough game, missing chance after chance from the side of the Nashville net on that sequence. “We had some great looks on the power play early on. We had probably four backdoor opportunities that we didnt finish on,” said Canucks assistant coach Mike Sullivan. “I thought our power play did everything tonight except put it in the net.” Despite Sullivans positive take, Vancouver is now just 2 for 30 with the man advantage over its last eight games. “We had good chances, good looks. I thought we moved the puck well,” said Daniel Sedin, who has now gone 11 games without scoring. "In the end it doesnt really matter right now. Weve got to get some goals. “Its up to us in here to make it happen. No excuses.” Craig Smith had the other goal for Nashville (23-22-7), while Carter Hutton made 32 saves as the Predators picked up their fourth victory in the last five outings. Spaling also had an assist. “We got some good goaltending, Carter was really good on those backdoor plays,” said Predators coach Barry Trotz, whose team improved to 1-21-2 when trailing after two periods. "They were executing that pretty well. We were having trouble trying to stop that and he got over there a couple times. “It was a good character test. That was huge for us to get through the first period.” Chris Higgins had the only goal for Vancouver (26-17-9), which got 24 stops from Roberto Luongo. The Canucks, who still hold down the first wild card spot in the Western Conference, saw their modest two-game winning streak come to an end. Down 1-0 after two periods, Nashville tied it at 3:28 of the third when Smith ripped a shot upstairs past Luongo from the faceoff dot off a feed from Spaling for his team-leading 16th goal of the season. “Going into the third when youve got a lead the least you can do is bring it to overtime. Its disappointing,” said Luongo. “I need to make a better play on the first one, be more patient on the wrap and read that play a bit better.” The Predators kept pushing as the period wore on, with their sixth-ranked power play getting a couple of chances. The Canucks penalty kill — which sits second in the NHL this season — held firm until Seth Jones connected with Spaling at 12:38. Jones fired a shot from the point that Spaling tipped past Luongo with just three seconds left on the Nashville man advantage to give the Predators their first lead. Vancouver had another power-play chance late, but couldnt find a way past Hutton. “The NHL is about a lot of low scoring games,” said Luongo. "Weve got to find ways to win them. Weve got to find ways to bring these games to overtime. Weve got to find ways to protect leads. When we get scored on weve got to keep playing. “Its a tough one to lose going into the third with the lead.” After a scoreless first period, Higgins broke the deadlock at 9:09 of the second with his 13th of the season on a nifty deflection. Canucks forward Dale Weise floated a shot towards the Nashville net that Higgins tipped up and over a helpless Hutton for his first goal in seven games. All 13 of Higgins goals have come at even strength and Thursdays effort was just Vancouvers sixth overall in the last six contests. The Canucks power play continued to miss the mark in the second, with defenceman Jason Garrison blasting a shot from the point midway though the period that Hutton handled. “I thought this particular game, the power play had better puck movement and even though we didnt score we got some momentum off of it because at least they had some looks and they had some opportunities, which for me is progress in the right direction,” said Sullivan. “The next step is we have to finish. We have to put it in the net.” The Canucks were again without head coach John Tortorella, who served the second game of his 15-day suspension for attempting to get into the Calgary Flames locker-room after Saturdays line brawl. Vancouver was also missing captain Henrik Sedin and fellow forward Mike Santorelli. Thought to be nursing rib and finger injuries, Sedin saw his iron man streak of 679 straight games come to an end when he sat out Tuesdays 2-1 road victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Santorelli, meanwhile, missed his third in a row, also with an upper-body injury. Despite their recent run of good form, the Predators still sit eight points back of the final wild card spot in the conference behind the Canucks and Minnesota Wild. “This team has been really resilient all year,” said Trotz. “Its been a little bit of an uphill battle all year. This team has got a lot of backbone, a lot of character and this group cares about each other so when things are a little bit rough they dig in and thats a great quality to have.” Notes: Michael Del Zotto, acquired from the New York Rangers on Wednesday for fellow defenceman Kevin Klein, wore No. 18 for Nashville and played alongside Jones. … Canucks defenceman Ryan Stanton returned to the lineup after missing the last 15 games with an ankle injury. The Warriors led by at least 20 points throughout the second half and beat the Boston Celtics 108-88 on Wednesday night, showing no letdown one day after edging the Indiana Pacers on a field goal with 0.6 seconds left. Klay Thompson hit that 12-foot turnaround to beat one of the NBAs best teams, 98-96. Against one of the worst, Thompson and David Lee scored 18 points each as the Warriors ended their road trip with a 4-2 record. “This win validates last night,” Thompson said. The Warriors were determined not to ease up against much weaker competition than they faced at Indiana, which has the leagues best home record. “It was big for us,” Lee said. “The starters really wanted to come out and set the tone tonight and not give the Celtics team any life.” That plan worked. The Warriors scored the first six points and led 12-2 with just over five minutes gone as they moved a season-high 14 games over .500 with a 38-24 record. “I read where if we lost this game then that takes away (Tuesdays win). You cannot forget how tough it is to win games in this league,” Golden State coach Mark Jackson said. “Fortunately, we did not fall in love with what we did in Indy.” The Celtics (20-41) provided little resistance and lost for the seventh time in eight games. “It was a struggle for us,” Boston coach Brad Stevens said. “Id like to find something that I could say we were better in, but there wasnt anything.” Former Celtic Jordan Crawford had 15 points and Stephen Curry added 14 for the Warriors, who won for the seventh time in nine games. Kelly Olynyk scored 19 points for Boston. “We dont want to keep embarrassing ourselves and that is the mentality we are going to have,” Jeff Green said. Lee started the scoring with an 18-footer and Andre Iguodala ffollowed with a layup and a dunk for a 6-0 lead.dddddddddddd Jerryd Bayless then hit a fadeaway jumper for Boston, but Golden State got the next six points on dunks by Curry and Thompson and a layup by Lee. The game was still competitive when Bayless two free throws cut Golden States lead to 42-33 with 5:55 left in the first half. Then Thompsons 3-pointer began a 19-7 run that gave the Warriors a 61-40 lead at halftime. Baskets by Lee and Andrew Bogut made it 49-33 before Rajon Rondo sank a free throw and Jared Sullinger made two for Boston. But then Golden State scored the next six points on a short jumper by Lee, a dunk by Iguodala and a 16-footer by Curry. A 3-pointer by Green cut the margin to 55-38, but Curry followed with a 3-point play. Rondo answered with a layup before Iguodala finished the first-half scoring with a 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining. The sloppy Celtics committed 12 turnovers in the first half, leading to 15 points, while the Warriors turned the ball over just twice, leading to two points. “What hurt us more than maybe anything were the turnovers in the first half that led to the dunks that got those guys going,” Stevens said. “I didnt think our effort was great.” The Warriors took their biggest lead, 31 points, when two straight baskets by Thompson made it 80-49 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter. “Theyre hitting their stride a little bit,” Stevens said. Now the Warriors head home for 13 of their remaining 20 games. “We took care of business on the road,” Lee said. “Our thought is we shouldnt lose any more games at home.” NOTES: Golden State has 20 road wins, tied with Oklahoma City for second most in the NBA. … Jackson rested his starters in the fourth quarter. … Rondo had 14 points and seven assists, but also had seven turnovers. … Lee had a game-high 10 rebounds, while Bogut blocked three shots. Téma: Jak postupovat / ract on Monday.MALMO, Sweden - Saku M The San Jose Sharks are emerging as a strong contender for Rick Nash. Sources say Columbus initially targeted Logan Couture, but was quickly told that was a non-starter. But, make no mistake, San Jose will stay in the mix until Mondays deadline. Nash and Sharks veteran Joe Thornton are good friends and have shown an impressive chemistry when playing together internationally that isnt being overlooked. The Sharks would prefer an off-season deal to avoid the in-season disruption, but San Jose is keen. Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson wont discuss specifics on any of the deals hes working on, but tells TSN there has been a lot of creativity suggested with a variety of his players. You cant blame Howson for working outside the short list Rick Nash provided at the beginning of this saga. As much as Howson wants to hit a grand slam in this deal, Nash isnt focused solely on the next four months and where his best chance to win a Stanley Cup might be. The 27-year-old is about to make a life-altering decision on where he wants to spend the next six-plus years of his life while investing in the community the way he has in Columbus. So, as diligently as Howson is working to find the best deal, its highly unlikely Rick Nash can be pressured into accepting a trade to a team or city hes not interested in going to. Torontos bevy of blue-liners continues to draw interest from around the league. With Jake Gardiner unavailable, multiple teams would like to pry Luke Schenn loose, however the Leafs insist he wont get moved unless faced with an offer they cant refuse, and so far, that offer hasnt been made. Carl Gunnarsson, Cody Franson and Keith Aulie are also generating interest. Chicago, Detroit, New Jersey, Edmonton and Winnipeg remain among the teams still searching for defencemen, so Toronto expects an opportunity will surface in the days ahead. The Edmonton Oilers are also hoping action heats up on Ales Hemsky. Inquiring teams say Hemskys asking price of an NHL roster player in return is too steep, given his lack of offensive production and potential status as a rental. However, unless those currently on the fence shift to selling mode, teams like Edmonton and Toronto, who have players in play, may hold firm on what they expect in return. Brazill was suspended for the first four games last season for violating the substance abuse policy. He said at the time it was for marijuana use. Brazill played in 10 games last season, finishing with 12 catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Over two seasons, including the playoffs, he had 30 catches for 491 yards and five touchdowns. He was drafted in the sixth round out of Ohio University in 2012. The Colts on Friday also signed free agent wide receiver Aaron Burks, a rookie from Boise State. They still havent figured out how to make the most of overtime. Pavel Datsyuk, in his 800th NHL game, scored his second goal of the night with 42.5 seconds left in regulation, but the Red Wings couldnt turn it into a win as they were beaten 5-4 by the New York Islanders in a shootout on Saturday night. The Red Wings have lost six straight overall, five in a row in extra time, and three consecutive in shootouts — including two on back-to-back nights. “If we hadnt gone through the last five, six games, this point would be pretty good,” forward Henrik Zetterberg said. "Right now its tough. We cant find a way to win a game. I think we battled hard. It was a back-to-back game and we found a way to come back at the end. “Overall, I think its a good point, but we were right there to get two points.” The Red Wings arrived in New York around 2 a.m. Saturday after losing at home to Washington on Friday. Detroit is 1-7 after regulation this season, 0-4 in shootouts. “We found a way to get a point,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "We obviously have to get better. We will get better. Its pretty obvious weve got to win in regulation because the shootout is killing us. “Its like anything in life, it gets in your head a little bit. To me weve got to be hard-headed and mentally tough. The standings could be a lot different for us if we won all these games, especially these shootouts.” Kevin Poulin was the difference for the Islanders after he replaced the injured Evgeni Nabokov in the first period. Neither team could hold the lead until he finally shut the door in the tiebreaker, denying Henrik Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi. “I love this,” Poulin said. “I was not nervous in the shootout, was pretty excited actually. I felt comfortable. You have to be ready to jump in. Thats why I play hockey.” Frans Nielsen scored the only shootout goal for the Islanders, who had dropped five of six. “Kevin really stepped up for us,” Islanders captain John Tavares said. “We kept calm and it paid off in the end.” Cal Clutterbuck had given the Islanders a 4-3 lead when he had the second deflection of Aaron Ness shot from the left point past Gustavsson 4:43 into the third for his second goal. The Islanders are 6-0-1 against Detroit in the past seven meetings and havent been beaten by the Red Wings in regulation since November 2003. New York outshot Detroit 15-4 in the third period and 6-1 in overtime. Tavares had a goal and assist to stretch his point and assist streaks to five games. Casey Cizikas and Brock Nelson both scored tying goals in the second period for thhe Islanders.dddddddddddd Poulin made 19 saves in relief of Nabokov, who injured a groin. Darren Helm and Johan Franzen had the other goals for the Red Wings, and Gustavsson stopped 37 shots through overtime in his first outing in place of Jimmy Howard since Oct. 23. Both teams were held at bay throughout most of the second period, but then combined for three goals in a span of 1:20 in the final three minutes of the frame. The Islanders got even 2-2 when the Red Wings poorly played a rush into their zone. Matt Martin carried the puck deep and fanned on a shot, but Colin McDonald got his stick on the puck and put it on Gustavsson. Cizikas got to that rebound and scored his second of the season and second in two games with 2:10 remaining. But for the second time, Islanders fans barely had a chance to celebrate before the Red Wings responded. Helm brought the puck into the New York zone and fed a pass to Franzen on the left wing. Franzen glided from the circle into the middle of the ice and snapped a drive past Poulin just 33 seconds later. This time it was the Islanders turn to answer quickly, and they did it 20 seconds into Luke Glendenings tripping penalty. Nelson scored with a second poke with 49.5 seconds remaining. The Red Wings wiped out their early 1-0 deficit just nine seconds after they fell behind, and knocked out Nabokov in the process. Helm won a faceoff against Tavares, right after the Islanders captain put New York in front at 4:03 with his ninth goal. The Red Wings controlled the puck in their zone until defenceman Jonathan Ericsson found Helm with a long lead pass that led to a breakaway. Helm came in on Nabokov, made a move that caused the goalie to do a split, and scored his second of the season at 4:12 to tie it 1-1. The 38-year-old Nabokov was playing for the first time in four games and the second in six. He was assisted by a trainer in the crease before getting up on his skates and gingerly skating while hunched over to the tunnel leading to the dressing room. Nabokov came into Saturday with a 5-5-3 record and 3.24 goals-against average. “He means a lot to this team, all of us,” Tavares said. “Not everyone knows how much he does for us in this room. Hes important.” Datsyuk made it 2-1 with 1:42 left in the first period, scoring a power-play goal with Bertuzzi screening Poulin in front. The Toronto Maple Leafs are now the only team Datsyuk hasnt scored a goal against. NOTES: The Red Wings recalled Glendening from Grand Rapids (AHL) to fill in for forward Daniel Alfredsson, who missed his second straight game because of a groin injury. … The Islanders failed to score on a 4-minute power play that spanned the second and third periods after Franzen was called for high-sticking. Téma: Jak postupovat / ross from an angle in the 34t DAYTON, Ohio — Dont get discouraged, coach Cuonzo Martin told his Volunteers during those long NCAA tournament timeouts. Instead, hang in there and figure a way to pull it out. They went about it a most improbable way. With forward Jarnell Stokes using his 280 pounds to dominate inside and a highly regarded defence finally locking in, Tennessee pulled off the first amazing comeback of the NCAA tournament. Stokes opened overtime with a three-point play that put Tennessee ahead to stay, and the Volunteers defence shut down Iowa in overtime for a 78-65 victory on Wednesday night, finishing off the First Four with an exclamation point. “I told our guys weve been through everything this season, keep your composure down the stretch,” said Martin, who got his first NCAA tournament win in his third season at Tennessee. “Find ways to win the ball game.” The Vols (22-12) head to Raleigh, N.C., where theyll play sixth-seeded Massachusetts on Friday in the Midwest Regional. They left Dayton with a lot of momentum — six wins in their last seven games. “We did a tremendous job toward the end of fighting back,” said Jordan McRae, who had 20 points. “We did a great job on our defence. For us to hold them like we did was a great job.” Tennessee didnt lead until Antonio Bartons 3-pointer put the Vols up 59-57 with 3:05 left regulation. There were five lead changes before McRae missed a jumper missed at the buzzer, leaving it tied at 64. No surprise that Barton made the big shot. The senior transfer is the only Volunteer with any significant NCAA tournament experience, having appeared in three of them with Memphis. Stokes three-point play in overtime was the key moment in his 18-point, 13-rebound performance, putting the Volunteers ahead to stay. It was his 20th double-double this season, the most by a Volunteer since Bernard King had 22 of them in 1976-77. Tennessees highly regarded defence took it from there, holding Iowa (21-13) to one free throw the rest of the way. The Hawkeyes missed all eight of their shots from the field in overtime. “You go through anything so often — being in those games, being in those situations — were a much better team the last eight games,” Martin said. “Guys stepped up and made plays.” It was a tough ending to a long and stressful day for Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. He started the day in Iowa with his teenage son, Patrick, who had surgery to remove a thyroid tumour. His assistant coaches led the Hawkeyes through a meeting and their final practice, and McCaffery was back by game time. Martin and the Volunteers hugged him after the game and wished him well. “Their players hugged me and told me they were thinking of me,” McCaffery said. “I was really impressed with their guys and the program Cuonzo has built there.” Adam Woodbury had 16 points for Iowa, which got a subpar performance from its leading scorer. Roy Devyn Marble was only 3 of 15 from the field for seven points, matching his season low. “I dont think we ran out of gas,” Woodbury said. “We made some key mistakes down the stretch and that hurt us.” The ending will sting the Hawkeyes for a long time. They were struggling as they headed into their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2006, losing six of their previous seven games. Defence was the biggest problem, often letting them down in the second half. They opened the game in promising fashion, switching from man-to-man to zone to half-court traps. It worked. They got off to a 16-4 lead and were still ahead 29-26 at halftime. They kept swatting away the Volunteers runs until the last few minutes of regulation. Marbles basket tied it at 64, and he was guarding McCrae when he missed his fade-away shot at the buzzer sending it to overtime. Tennessee got an at-large bid by closing the season with a defensive flourish. The Volunteers won five straight before losing to No. 1 Florida 56-49 in the Southeastern Conference tournament. They gave up 61.1 points per game, second only to Florida in the SEC, and allowed an average of only 47.4 points in the last four games. In overtime, that defence decided it. Lionel Messi volleyed in Dani Alves pass for his 28th league goal this season in the 23rd minute, only for Lafita to level after a rare attack for Getafe in the 37th. Substitute Cesc Fabregas appeared to put Barcelona back on track when he initiated a move that ended with Alexis Sanchez scoring in the 67th. But Barcelonas brittle defence again betrayed it in the final moments when Lafita charged in to head home Jaime Gavilans cross and grab a draw that silenced the Camp Nou. Out of the Champions League and Copa del Rey, Barcelonas chances of defending its domestic crown are fading fast. The Catalan club was left three points behind Atletico Madrid before the leader visits Levante on Sunday. There are two more rounds after this weekend. Real Madrid trails Atletico by six points but has a game in hand. Despite still being mathematically alive, Barcelona appears to have given up the title. “This hasnt been a good season, nor is this the way we wanted it to end,” Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said. “The responsibility lies with the manager. Our expectation was to stay in it as long as we could. We did so until today. If we havent been able to beat a team fighting to stay up, then we dont deserve to be champions.” Barcelona has been sub-par in the second half of the season. After dropping just four points through the first 18 league games under Martino, it has dropped 18 points in the last 18 rounds. Martino, who is widely expected to be fired, added, “Sometimes you dont think its necessary to ask for a second chance because you dont deserve one.” Elsewhere, Celta Vigo won 2-0 at Osasuna, Elche won 1-0 at Malaga, and Valladolid edged Espanyol 1-0 as it tries to escape the relegation zone. Barcelonas first home game since former coach Tito Vilanovas death last week from throat cancer ffeatured a commemorative video, an enormous banner with the message “Tito, Always Eternal,” and a minutes silence before kickoff.dddddddddddd. Barring slipups by Atletico and Madrid, Barcelona wont win a major title for the first time since the 2007-08 season, before former coach Pep Guardiola took over with Vilanova as his assistant. Vilanova led the team to the league title last year in his only season as coach. Barcelona dominated the outclassed Getafe for the first 80 minutes, but its lack of scoring touch cost the host dearly. Lafita converted two of Getafes three scoring opportunities, while Pedro Rodriguez and Alexis were particularly off target for a Barcelona side that generated a plethora of empty shots. Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets said the players were the “only ones” to blame. “We have committed mistakes that are not befitting players who want to play in this league. We wont win any titles this year, and I hope that serves the team in years to come.” Getafe rested one point above the relegation zone. In Pamplona, Manuel “Nolito” Agudo scored his third brace in as many games for Celta. He struck first in the 20th with an exquisite chip shot and followed that by driving in a cross from an angle in the 34th. Celta climbed into eighth place while Osasuna was left level on points with Valladolid and clinging to safety. Elche moved four points above the drop after winning at Malaga thanks to Garry Rodrigues goal in the 11th. Elche had two players shown direct red cards. Reserve goalkeeper Antonio Rodriguez was booked for coming off the bench to argue with Malagas players in the 68th, and defender Alberto Botia was sent off in the 82nd for kicking the ball into a prone Malaga player after a foul. Valladolid defender Antonio Rukavina scored in the 20th and Espanyol was never able to mount a comeback, with Luis “Pizzi” Afonso dismissed with a second yellow card in the 72nd. Valladolid striker Manucho injured his leg in the second half and had to carted off. Téma: Jak postupovat / has been frustrated with shoulder SOCHI, Russia — Canada captured a historic fourth Olympic gold medal in womens hockey Thursday with a 3-2 overtime win over the United States in a thrilling championship final. The only other womens team to win more consecutive Olympic gold is the U.S. in womens basketball with five in a row from 1996 to 2012. Marie-Philip Poulin scored the winner on a power play at 8:10 of overtime for her second of the game. She had tied it up with 55 seconds remaining in regulation. Poulin was a heroine of Canadas gold in Vancouver four years ago. She scored twice in a 2-0 win over the Americans. Trailing 1-0 after two periods and down two goals deep into the third, Canada scored twice in the final 3:26 of the regulation and suddenly the gold that had been slipping away was within reach again. Canadas Brianne Jenner halved the deficit at 16:34 of the third with a shot that deflected off of U.S. defender Kacey Bellamys knee and over goalie Jesse Vetter. With Shannon Szabados pulled from Canadas net for an extra attacker, forward Kelli Stacks attempted empty-netter that would have sealed the gold for the Americans hit the post. In overtime, Canadian defender Catherine Ward was serving a cross-checking minor and American forward Jocelyne Lamoureux a slashing minor when Canadas Hayley Wickenheiser took off on a breakaway. She was hauled down by Hilary Knight and Poulin scored on the ensuing four-on-three. U.S. captain Meghan Duggan scored in the second period and Alex Carpenter added a power-play goal in the third in front of an announced 10,639 at the Bolshoy Ice Dome. Duggan beat Szabados with a wrist shot over the Canadian goalies glove shoulder at 11:57 of the second. Carpenter deflected a cross-ice pass from Hilary Knight past Szabadoss left pad at 2:01 of the third. Szabados made 27 saves for the win, while Vetter stopped 28 shots in the loss. Canada edged the Americans 3-2 in the final preliminary-round game for both countries. SAO PAULO, Brazil — Top-seeded Tommy Haas retired with a shoulder injury while losing 6-3, 3-2 to Paolo Lorenzi of Italy in the Brazil Open semifinals on Saturday. Haas said he “felt a lot of pain” in his right shoulder when he slammed his racket to the ground in frustration after losing his serve at 3-3 in the first set. He kept playing despite needing medical treatment several times, and finally gave up after going down another break in the second set. The 12th-ranked German said the pain was “getting worse during the match” and it didnt allow him to “compete the way” he wanted. “After I threw my racket when I got broken at three-all I felt a lot of pain in my shoulder and it never really got away,” the 35-year-old Haas said. “The pain was getting worse. And the smart players decision has to be not to continue, unfortunately.” Haas said he has been frustrated with shoulder problems and admitted it could play a factor on when to stop playing. “Ive had three shoulder injuries and one elbow injury, so my shoulder is not the youngest, not the way it needs to be,” Haas said.dddddddddddd"Im very happy that I can still play at a high level, but sometimes the shoulder is very, very tired, very, very stiff, and it tells me not to continue. But Ill try to play as long as I can, hopefully for the rest of the season, then we will see." The 32-year-old Lorenzi, ranked 114th, will play in his first ATP final against 61st-ranked Federico Delbonis of Argentina, who got past home-crowd favourite Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 in 2 hours, 9 minutes. Lorenzi had previously never advanced past the quarterfinals. “When I started this tournament I never thought that I would be playing in the final,” Lorenzi said. “Now tomorrow lets see what happens. Right now Im just happy to be in this final.” Rafael Nadal elected not to defend the title this week. He chose to play in the first Rio Open, which he won last week. Téma: Jak postupovat / its of winning an Olympic medal go right down to soc EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Monday night that New York Giants centre Chris Snee and punter Steve Weatherford restructured their contracts. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not formally announced the moves, said that centre David Baas also will be waived-injured on Tuesday, when teams can start signing free agents. The person did not have details Monday night of the deals for Snee and Weatherford. ESPN reported that Snee will cut his salary $7.2 million to $1.1 million. He also can earn $1 million in incentives. Snee missed most of last season after undergoing hip surgery. He will be entering his 11th season. Weatherford was to earn almost $2.2 million next season. Baas was signed as a free agent in 2011 and centred the line that helped Eli Manning and the Giants win their second Super Bowl in five seasons in 2012. The 32-year-old played three games last season because of knee and neck injuries. The Giants will save more than $1.75 million in salary cap space by cutting him. The move leaves the Giants without a centre since Kevin Boothe is a free agent and Jim Cordle is a restricted free agent who probably will not be tendered because of a knee injury. New York reportedly has interest in Saints centre Brian de la Puente and Packers centre Evan Dietrich-Smith. The moves leave the Giants roughly $24 million under the salary cap. That consistency was rewarded Friday when Sinclair was named Canadian womens soccer player of the year for the 10th straight time, and 11th overall. Her latest accolade came a day after the 30-year-old forward from Burnaby, B.C., marked her 200th appearance for Canada and scored her 147th career international goal in a 2-0 win over Scotland. “Internationally Ive been a part of this team for a while and been through many ups and downs, and three coaches, but its clear to see the program is progressing,” Sinclair said Friday on a conference call from Brazil, where Canada is participating in the Torneio Internacional de Futebol Feminino. “I think both technically and tactically, the support from the federation, everything seems to be going in the right direction building towards 2015,” she added. The national womens program is in a good place heading into 2015, when Canada will host the FIFA Womens World Cup. Canada won its first ever Pan Am Games gold medal in 2011, then made its mark on the nations sports landscape with a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. “Very few people get an opportunity to actually play in a World Cup at home, but I think we have a shot at doing very well,” Sinclair said. “Everything were doing is building toward that and trying to prove to everyone that what happened in London isnt a one-off thing and that its sustainable. That Canada is a forced to be reckoned within the international scene.” Sinclair called her international experience this year “interesting.” She missed Canadas first four international games due to a suspension stemming from an altercation with an official after Canadas semifinal loss to the U.S. at the London Games. She also said that Canada is currently in a building phase and developing younger players for the main squad, which has meant results have been muted following an explosive 2012. But on the club level, Sinclair had a season to remember. She led the Portland Thorns to the NWSL championship with eight goals in 20 matches. It marked her third straight club title, having won in 2010 with FC Gold Pride and 2011 with the Western New York Flash. “I have many ties to the Portland area having gone to university there,” she said. “Its a soccer-crazy city, and being able to reward those fans and that organization with aa championship, it just meant so much to me to be able to give that to the city.dddddddddddd” Sinclair added that as big as international womens soccer is getting, a healthy domestic league will do a lot to help to grow the game. “For me its all about doing everything I can to help the NWSL survive,” she said. "Its my goal to have this league around for years to come, so that nine- and 10-year-olds now have a place to play when theyre done with university and a place to dream of playing. “Very few people make national teams, but it doesnt mean that once youre done your university or youth club career that your soccer career should be over.” Sinclair made the 10-player shortlist for the 2013 FIFA Womens World Player of the Year award and was honoured on Canadas Walk of Fame. Sinclair first won the Canadian award in 2000 and has made it her own since 2004. Six men have won the male half of the award since then. A lot has happened since her first award, from the highs of playing in the 2002 under-19 World Cup final in front of a big crowd at Edmontons Commonwealth Stadium, to the lows of finishing in last place at the 2011 World Cup in Germany. “I remember back to 2002 with the under-19 world championship and there being almost 50,000 fans at the final and thinking All right, womens soccer has arrived in this country,” she said. “And then we went through a little bit of a lull. As a national team we didnt perform as well as we would have hoped to, and you didnt see the huge increases in attendance. But obviously what happened in London has blown everyones expectations out of the water.” Sinclair said the benefits of winning an Olympic medal go right down to soccers youth level. “Just little kids who recognize all of us, because when I was that age I had no idea there was even a national team,” she said. “Now these kids have female athletes as role models and they dream of being the next Erin McLeod (Canadas goalkeeper), that never happened 15 years ago.” Midfielder Diana Matheson was runner-up for the Canadian soccer award, followed by McLeod and midfielder Desiree Scott. The award is voted on by Canadian media, coaches and clubs. Portland Timbers captain Will Johnson was named male player of the year on Thursday. Dylan Carreiro and Kadeisha Buchanan were earlier named under-20 players of the year. Marco Carducci and Sura Yekka took under-17 honours while Liam Stanley was named Para Player of the Year. The awards are sponsored by BMO. cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / highs in points (18.8), assists (5.9) re TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie, Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger have the latest on whats brewing ahead of the Sochi Olympics and beyond to the Mar. 5 trade deadline, including an important date in Ryan OReillys future with the Colorado Avalanche. The Sochi Olympics will occupy most of our attention for the next month or so, but 10 days after the gold medal is handed out, its TradeCentre. Give me some names that might move. Bob McKenzie: Two names that you might hear out there are a couple of veterans from the Dallas Stars and maybe those players are actually hoping to hear their names in trade rumours: Were talking about veteran forward Ray Whitney and defenceman Sergei Gonchar. Neither of these two players, you could say, are thriving under Lindy Ruff in Dallas right now. Its not a great situation for either one of them. Now, if the Stars decide to move them, Whitney would be a pure rental and would be a lot easier to move, since somebody could pick him up for just the balance of the season. Gonchar has two more years left at $5 million per year on one of those over-35 contracts. That will be a tough one to move. Pierre LeBrun: One of those contenders looking to add before the trade deadline will be the Anaheim Ducks although youd wonder what a team thats won 18 of 19 could possibly need. Were told that they are targeting a right-handed defenceman. That would be the top of their wish-list and one name that I know will have some intrigue is Dan Girardi of the New York Rangers. However, at this point the Rangers are telling teams that theyre not moving him, are focused on signing him and are confident at this point that those negotiations will possibly lead to a new deal. Ryan Callahan is another unrestricted free agent for the Rangers. That negotiation is perhaps not as far down the road, and I dont know if the Rangers can get both done, but Girardi seems more likely. “California Dreamin” goes beyond the Ducks. What would the L.A. Kings like to add? Darren Dreger: Theyd like to add some scoring and a bit more skill but the sense is around the Kings that theyre going to have to wait, let the money go down a little bit more. So, were talking about a deal that probably doesnt happen much before the Mar. 5 trade deadline. Theyre looking at rental players like Mike Cammalleri, Thomas Vanek perhaps Tomas Fleischmann or even Matt Moulson. Thats the type of player the Kings feel would give them a bit of a push going into the playoffs. Five days before TradeCentre – right at the end of February – is a very important day for Ryan OReilly and the Colorado Avalanche. Explain. McKenzie: It will mark a year since he signed his free agent offer sheet that the Calgary Flames tendered and was obviously matched by the Avalanche. That is when the Avalanche – if they so desire – have the availability to move him in a trade. Theyve been restricted and havent been able to do that up until now. Im not saying they will, Im saying that that is the time lapse that if they wanted to trade OReilly. Keep in mind that they have to qualify OReilly when the season ends at $6.5 million. LeBrun: So many teams are keeping an eye on what the Avs are going to do with OReilly. If hes made available, to me hes a number one player on the trade market. So many teams could use him and one of those teams that covet him – I believe – are the Vancouver Canucks. I would put him at the top of their list, he fits all their needs in terms of finding another centre and they have an abundance of defencemen, which is something Colorado would want to have back in a trade, if they were to put OReilly on the market. If some student were to do a study on which team is talked about most with trade rumblings on Insider Trading it would probably be the Carolina Hurricanes. Whats the latest there? Dreger: Tuomo Ruutu is very much in play. It seems like he has been for the entire season and last year, too. Jim Rutherford met with Ruutu this week and told him hes going to start pushing that trade now. Ruutu has a no-trade clause but he said hed do his best to work with Carolina. McKenzie: Rutherford sent a league-wide email saying Ruutu is available, as well as Jiri Tlusty, Riley Nash, Drayson Bowman and Brett Bellemore. The Canucks did the same thing with Dale Weise and the Tampa Bay Lightning did the same thing with Keith Aulie and Tom Pyatt. LeBrun: One goalie that is available is Michal Neuvirth in Washington. We know his agent spoke publicly about hoping he would get a new home. The Florida Panthers are a team keeping an eye on it. That may be more of a move for the off-season, but they have some interest. Steven Stamkos has three more weeks to be ready for Sochi. He participated in the morning skate with his team for the first time Thursday. What does this mean as far as his timetable for a return? Dreger: Its a great sign because up until this point hes been skating on his own and those that have been following Stamkos thought that that was a good sign. Now, be mindful of the fact that this wasnt a full practice but Stamkos did skate with his team wearing a red jersey and clearly not participating in any sort of battle drills. He was not going full-steam but, as I said, those who were watching this – and that includes Team Canada – are very optimistic with Stamkos rejoining his club and participating in that type of practice environment. They are not optimistic enough, though, to guarantee that he will be in the line-up prior to the Olympic break. Most believe that he should be ready by a game or two before the Olympics, so were talking Feb. 4, 6 or 8. But that is not a guarantee. Catch the game, live from US Airways Center, on TSN2 beginning at 9pm et/6pm pt. Torontos 27-point collapse in Tuesdays 112-103 loss to Golden State was the largest comeback by an opponent in the Raptors 19-year existence. After allowing the Warriors to shoot 68 per cent and being outscored by 27 during the final 12 minutes, the Raptors aim to replicate their dominance through the first three quarters rather than the nightmare that occurred in the fourth. While the Raptors have dropped four straight – allowing opponents to shoot 50 per cent and giving up 104.0 points during that stretch – the Suns continue to defy the odds, winning five of their last eight games. Expected by many to be one of the worst teams in the league this season, Phoenix has started off strong, thanks in large part to their dynamic backcourt and improved offence. The Suns have been the leagues most improved offensive team over last season according to NBA.com/stats, scoring six points more per 100 possessions. Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe – who was acquired in an offseason trade with the Clippers – are both averaging career highs in scoring and have combined to contribute 36.7 points, 12.6 assists and 6.5 rebounds per contest, both shooting over 48 per cent from the field. “Theyre a little bit like the Phoenix teams of old as far as their running games concerned,” Dwane Casey said following shootaround Friday afternoon. “Dragic does a great impersonation of [Steve] Nash. Hes playing very well right now, handling the basketball, hes the head of the snake so our work is cut out for us on the defensive end.” Torontos guards, DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, accounted for 46 points in Tuesdays loss. DeRozan has led the team in scoring in six of the last eight games, pouring in 17 or more points in a career-high 11 straight contests. Meanwhile, Lowry has paced the club in assists in nine straight games, recording at least six dimes in each, also a career-best. Having swept the season series with Phoenix last year, the Raptors are looking to win four consecutive games against the Suns for the first time in their history. Trends and Tidbits The Raptors are 4-2 in games following a 20-point comeback by an opponent. Toronto has been outscored in the paint in each contest during its four-game skid and by 58 points overall (188-130). The team is averaging just 17.3 assists, committing 17.5 turnovers and is allowing opponents to shoot 40 per cent from three-point range over that stretch. What to Watch For Slowing down the Suns With Bledsoe and Dragic running the show, the Suns have been the leagues most lethal team in transition, scoring 20.0 fast-break points per game. Phoenix has tallied 20 or more fast-break points in 11 of 19 contests this season so keeeping this young and athletic Suns team in the half-court will be a key to Torontos success.ddddddddddddIt should also be one of the Raptors biggest challenges. Defending the three-point line Although the Raptors contained Golden States sharpshooters through the first three quarters, holding the Warriors to 4-of-12 shooting from long distance, they got burned by the three-ball down the stretch. The Warriors went 8-for-11 in the fourth quarter with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson connecting on six of their seven attempts. Like the Warriors, the Suns are not shy from beyond on the arc. Phoenix attempts the fourth-most threes in the league on a per game basis and has drained seven or more treys in 11 straight contests. Who to Watch For DeMar DeRozan Even in embarrassing defeat on Tuesday, DeRozan has been the best and most consistent Raptor this year. Sitting 12th in the NBA in scoring at 21.8 points per game, DeRozan has been especially productive over the last eight contests when hes averaged 26.4 points on 50 per cent shooting from the field and 46 per cent from three-point range. DeRozan needs 18 points to reach 5,000 for his career, becoming the sixth player in franchise history to achieve that milestone, joining Chris Bosh, Vince Carter, Andrea Bargnani, Morris Peterson and Jose Calderon. His biggest challenge Friday will come on the defensive end where he will be assigned to one of Phoenixs point guards, Bledsoe or Dragic. “It gives us a different look but we have to adapt, we have to adjust,” said Casey, who spoke about trying to exploit the Suns small lineup. “We want to try to make sure we make them pay on the offensive end with our size and our inside game.” Eric Bledsoe After missing six games with a shin injury, then coming off the bench for two, Bledsoe has returned to the Suns starting lineup. With the increased playing time – 34 minutes per game, up from 20 with the Clippers last season – Bledsoe is averaging career highs in points (18.8), assists (5.9) rebounds (4.2) and steals (1.6). The Suns guard has already scored 20 or more points six times this year after doing so on four occasions in his first three NBA seasons. “Theyve made it work because Bledsoe is a tough little guy down in the post,” Casey said of the Suns small backcourt. “A lot of teams have tried to post him and well probably try to do some of the same but he does a good job even though hes small. Hes strong, hes like a little fireplug. So weve got to do a good job of getting deep post position on him and try to make them pay for playing small.” Injury Report Kyle Lowry was hit in the head late in the third quarter Tuesday but returned in the fourth. He was tested for a concussion on the bench before re-entering then again after the game, passing both. He practiced in full Thursday without experiencing any grogginess, per Casey, and will be active for Toronto in Phoenix. Thats when things started to go wrong for her Monday, the first day of the season-opening major. The seven-time Grand Slam champion missed the break-point chance in the sixth game and then, after getting to 40-30 on serve in the ninth, inexplicably firing three consecutive double-faults to surrender a break and just about the set to No. 22-seeded Ekaterina Makarova. After a quick break and a change of her self-designed zebra print dress, she took a 3-0 lead in the third before her unforced error toll climbed to 56 and Makarova won six of the next seven games for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win. The 33-year-old Williams, the second-oldest player in the tournament, has struggled with injuries and illness in recent seasons but reached the final of the WTA event at Auckland to start 2014 and came to Melbourne saying she was feeling better than she had in years. “The last 12 months I have had issues,” she said. “But this year I definitely am looking forward to having a good run and feeling well.” That didnt happen Monday. “My level was a little bit too up and down. Obviously my error count was a little high,” said Williams, the 2003 finalist who was playing in her 14th Australian Open. “I have to give her a lot of credit, though, she was very determined … played hard.” Makarova said because it was the first match of the tournament, it was probably more difficult to beat Venus than it was to upset Serena Williams in the fourth round here in 2012. Montreal native Eugenie Bouchard, who is seeded 30th, reached the second round with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Chen Tang Hao of China. Bouchard led the opening set 3-1, only to fall behind 5-3. Bouchard saved set points in the ensuing game on Tang errors before finally earning a 7-5 win on a break. The 19-year-old Bouchard was more in control in the second set and dominated to win the set 6-1. Vasek Pospisil, a 23-year-old Vancouver resident who grew up in Vernon, B.C., also won his opening match early Monday. Téma: Jak postupovat / g All-Star catcher Salvador Pere ST. JOHNS, N.L. — The sound of the final buzzer going off on Saturday night was music to St. Johns IceCaps goalie Michael Hutchinsons ears. Hutchinson earned a 42-save shutout to lead his team over the Binghamton Senators 1-0 in American Hockey League action. “I was pretty excited when the final buzzer went,” Hutchinson said. "I didnt even realize when it first went off, I was getting ready for the guy who was about to take a shot. “After that, everything hits you and you start reflecting and enjoying it once you get in the locker room.” IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge said the star of the game tonight was an expected one. “I thought our best player was obviously who everybody knows it was, its Hutchinson,” McCambridge said. “It was all him. He bailed us out numerous times, and credit the guys who were blocking shots.” The IceCaps were aware what they were up against playing the Senators, who lead the league in goals scored this year. “They are the number one ranked team offensively in the league, and they showed that tonight,” McCambridge said. “We turned over too many pucks, to give them opportunities.” Hutchinson says playing against a team with the offensive production of the Senators is a welcome challenge. “Its always really fun to play when we play against a team with as much offensive power as Binghamton has,” Hutchinson said. “You know youre going to face shots and youre going to be relied on.” Eric ODell scored for the IceCaps (34-19-4). Andrew Hammond made 24 saves for the Senators (33-19-4). St. Johns opened the scoring 11:41 into the game, as Kael Mouillierat found ODell headed to the net. ODell finished off a low one-time wrist shot. St. Johns was outshot 17-8 through the first period but held on to the lead due to strong play from Hutchinson. Halfway through the second period, Hutchinson made the save of the night, sprawling with his left pad to shut down Corey Cowick on a cross-crease opportunity to preserve the lead. Téma: Jak postupovat / he enormous pressure placed on i FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — LeGarrette Blount made one last big splash into a soggy end zone. The powerful back finished his 35-yard touchdown run up the left sideline by flopping with outstretched arms and capping the New England Patriots 34-20 win over the Buffalo Bills in a steady downpour Sunday. The victory gave the Patriots a first-round bye and the Gillette Stadium field an extra week to dry out. “He carried the team on his back most of the day,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. The rain “got worse as the game went along. It was definitely a running game.” Blount rushed for a career-high 189 yards, returned two kickoffs for 145 and set a club record with 334 all-purpose yards. The Patriots (12-4) obtained Blount in an off-season trade with Tampa Bay and he shared playing time with other backs since then. On Sunday, the 250-pounder led the charge. He also scored on a 36-yard run and set up a touchdown and field goal with kickoff returns of 83 and 62 yards. The extra point after his 35-yarder put the Patriots ahead 34-20 with 2:31 left. “Every time I play I try my best to come out with the mindset to make a contribution to any part of the game, whether its kick returns or running the ball or catching it,” Blount said. After his second touchdown, he hugged Belichick, who had a towel draped over his shoulders. Tom Brady was content to hand the ball off rather than throw through rain drops against a team leading the NFL in sacks and second in interceptions. “The water on the field at the end, it was just puddles,” he said. Stephen Gostkowski kicked four field goals as the Patriots earned their eighth bye in Belichicks 14 seasons. The Bills (6-10) missed the playoffs for the 14th straight year, the leagues longest current streak. They won their previous two games. “It would be much different if we were ending on a three-game winning streak,” Bills coach Doug Marrone said. “To say that youre close or anything like that, until you win we dont have a leg to stand on.” New England won its 13th straight home game against Buffalo, including 12-0 since Gillette opened in 2002. The Patriots have the second seed and play in two weeks at home, where theyre 8-0. Denver, which beat Oakland, has the top seed. New England began its game with a chance to finish in any of the AFCs top four playoff spots. “We put together a great season, but it doesnt matter much now,” Brady said. The Bills played without quarterback EJ Manuel, who has a small tear in a left knee ligament, and wide receiver Stevie Johnson, excused for the second straight game after his mothers death. Backup Thad Lewis threw a 12-yard scoring pass to T.J. Graham late in the third quarter and led an 80-yard drive capped by Fred Jacksons 5-yard run with 10:20 remaining. After each of those touchdowns Blount had his long kickoff returns. His 83-yarder set up Bradys 5-yard scoring pass to Shane Vereen, followed by a 2-point conversion pass that made it 24-10. The 62-yarder led to Gostkowskis fourth field goal, a 35-yarder that put the Patriots ahead 27-17. The Bills turned over the ball on downs on their next possession. “Of course the ball is wet,” Buffalo wide receiver Robert Woods said, “but we still have to make plays and catch the ball.” Before the Patriots ran the next play, “Singin in the Rain” blared over the public address system, and drenched fans sang along. Then Manny Lawson intercepted Bradys pass and the Bills capitalized with Dan Carpenters 37-yard field goal. Buffalo tried an onside kick, but Nate Ebner recovered for New England. Blount then ran 10 yards before scoring his second touchdown on the next play. The game even featured a punt by Brady on third-and-32 from his 46-yard line midway through the third quarter with the score 16-3. It travelled 32 yards, where Jim Leonhard made a fair catch. “It could have been a lot better,” Brady said. Brady finished 14 of 24 for 122 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Lewis went 16 for 29 for 247 yards and a touchdown. C.J. Spiller led the Bills with 105 yards rushing. NOTES: Bills tackle Marcell Dareus was benched for the first half for violating a team rule. In Buffalos previous game he was benched for the first quarter, also for violating a team rule. … The previous Patriots record for all-purpose yards was 273 by Larry Garron in 1962 at Buffalo. … Carpenters 51-yard field goal that tied the game at 3 made him the first player in Bills history with four field goals of at least 50 yards or more in a season. As someone who grew up idolizing many sports I was absolutely thrilled when my daughter came home from school and told me her class spent part of their lunch watching the Winter Olympics in the library. “Look daddy there is that girl skier I watched today,” she said pointing at our television. The skier in question hadnt won gold but shed won a spot on national television and, while enjoying her moment in the spotlight, had a huge smile for the camera. An enormous smile for a finish outside the medals. This lady had captured my daughters attention. Her happiness, so it turned out, had been infectious. I had noticed the smile immediately. I had spent my day watching hours of Premier League football and on a day where few goals were scored, even fewer smiles showed up. In fact, aside from celebrating the rare goals, none of the players smiled at all. It made me wonder; isnt anyone having any fun anymore? This had come to my attention watching Manchester Uniteds recent draw with Fulham at Old Trafford. United conceded early, spent much of the next hour camped in their opponents half, scored a goal with 12 minutes left, didnt celebrate, rushed back to restart, then scored a goal again which finally allowed everyone to smile. And laugh. And, in the case of manager David Moyes, act like theyd won the Champions League. It had all seemed a bit forced and then the smiles were well and truly wiped off their faces when Darren Bent netted a dramatic 94th minute equalizer. A few Fulham players smiled at the final whistle, others hugged each other and clapped their fans as they headed down the tunnel, no doubt turning their attention to their next match coming four days later. Welcome to Premier League football in 2014. Every team is either racing after something or trying to run away from something and while they are doing it, very few are stopping to smell the roses on the way. For some, having a plethora of teams challenge for the title, European spots, and against relegation, is seen as parity and a wonderful way for the league to have many important matches. The problem, however, are the intense demands that come with chasing 1st, 4th or 17th, for example, and they are undoubtedly weighing the players down. We are not supposed to feel sorry for a professional footballer. They earn tremendous amounts of money and for that they are supposed to be looked upon differently. However, whilst watching hours of Premier League football this month, I keep coming back to my original question – Is anyone having fun anymore? Professional sports have never been as professional. No stone is unturned and athletes are given the best of everything, but is this making them better and, just as important, are they enjoying themselves? Premier League footballers have their every move looked at, both on and off the playing field. How they train, eat, sleep, socialize, cross, pass, shoot, run, you name it, the club is looking at it. We are told it is to ensure every player is getting what they need so their employers can get the best out of them but you only have to watch Manchester United this season to know that they are not getting the best out of their players. We live in a world where every player in a game we have just watched can be analyzed in many different ways. By this rule, we can debate the merits of Tom Cleverley in midfield, the decision to play Juan Mata wide or Ashley Young at all, for example. Trained eyes can tell you how well they played. Stats available on your smart phone can tell you where they passed the ball and to whom seconds after it happens. Some statistics, if used correctly, can tell a story of how a player performed. Yet, the one thing no one will ever find a way to solve is the inability to know what is happening inside a players mind. Manchester United players this season look like the shirt is very heavy on them. They look like a team featuring players who have some serious doubts in their minds. These doubts could be anything from concerns about their form, whether their manager is good enough, or if their wife and kids are happy. Some of their teammates will not even know the real issues in their mind so the media and fans have no chance at knowing.dddddddddddd And there is a very good chance that we will never know most of the issues. “The time to speak about many things will come,” said striker Javier Hernandez on his Instagram account this week. It is a cryptic message and time will tell what he reveals, but if and when he does so, he will be in the minority. The Premier League right now is full of players going through mental battles. Yes, they have tremendous talent with a football and show you a strong side of them when they are on the field but what of the other times? A lot of things can happen in 6,410 hours – the amount of time between the start and end of a Premier League season. Only 57 of these are spent playing 38 games of Premier League football, less than nine per cent of the time. Yet, it is this time that many of us use when analyzing these individuals. It is, of course, the time we get to know them as we welcome them inside our living rooms, but for over 91 per cent of the time, these individuals are left to be as vulnerable as you or I and wed be foolish to not think what happens during this time doesnt have a substantial impact on what they do when playing. They are over analyzed and monitored by their clubs who hire men, who usually lose their job within two years, to get the best out of them as soon as possible. The pressure from that manager leaks to the players and leaves many to do things they wouldnt normally do. This is an example of insecurities being created by the sports culture. Clubs demand success, managers demand players to play at a high level and players are told they must deliver when the pressure is on. They are bombarded with information about their style and how they can be better but some are drowning in modern day over-professionalism and are losing their love for the sport. Last November I watched closely a battle between England and Australia in cricket and was left puzzled by the poor performances of a particularly England player who consistently seemed to play poorly. That player, Jonathan Trott, would go on to leave the tour and return home with a stress related illness. He was one of the minority who got help and, because he walked away from the series, allowed the public to see what demons he was battling in his personal life. Trotts case is the extreme and it would be wrong to assume many professional footballers have gone through something similar but it would naive to deny it completely. When we study the less than nine per cent of visual evidence we have on these players it is clear that many are not enjoying themselves enough. Manchester United have no chance at winning the league but instead of the club adopting a we are in a transition phase where we are experimenting to evaluate what we need to know to get better approach, the club is starting every match like it needs to win it and the enormous pressure placed on its players means they are not expressing themselves. How much better would they be if they were told to just forget the league table and have fun? Southampton have no such demands and have shown this season what a club can do when they are free to express themselves. Sure, they too could smile more but if a league table existed for content and happiness they would be at the top. Anyone who doesnt think this leads to success should talk to the current Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. “My priority is to ensure that players feel more amateur than professional,” Scolari once said. “Thirty to forty years ago, the effort was the other way. Now there is so much professionalism, we have to revert to urging players to like the game, love it, do it with joy.” Anyone who watches Neymar often would say Scolari has so far accomplished that goal. Neymar would make a great Olympian; a true global superstar who plays with a smile. Too bad too many in the Premier League take it too seriously. Another win for modern day over-professionalism. Thankfully it isnt creeping into our childrens schools during Sochi 2014. Instead a letdown in a second-set tiebreaker proved costly for the Canadian as he dropped a three-set decision to Novak Djokovic on Saturday at the Italian Open. The second-ranked Djokovic will now renew his rivalry with top-ranked Rafael Nadal in the championship match Sunday. There will be an enticing womens championship too, with top-ranked Serena Williams to face Sara Errani, the tournaments first Italian finalist in nearly 30 years. Djokovic took his time before figuring out Raonics massive serve for a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory in a three-hour match at the Foro Italico. “I did the things I wanted to do. I didnt execute in the moments I would have liked but I did create a lot of opportunities for myself,” Raonic said. "I just wish I would have played a few situations differently. I had the right approach but wasnt able to execute well (all) of the time. “I felt I had a chance in the match. I brought my best tennis (so) I could give myself an opportunity — which I was able to do today. It came down to a few moments and he performed better in those moments than I did.” Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., had 55 winners but also made 42 unforced errors. The 23-year-old missed out on three break-point chances in the second set while Djokovic earned an early break in the third for a lead he wouldnt relinquish. “It was a tight match that was decided in the first two sets on a few points,” Djokovic said. “He put a lot of pressure on my service games. And when you serve that well, you dont have as much pressure on your return games.” Raonics serve flirted with the 230 km/h mark at times and he fired 17 aces. “I cant recall the last time when I was feeling so helpless in the return games,” Djokovic said. “It was brutal.” In mens doubles action, Canadas Daniel Nestor and Serbian partner Nenad Zimonjic reached the final with a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 12-10 win over Bob and Mike Bryan of the United States. Raonic lost to Nadal in the final of the 2013 Rogers Cup in his lone Masters 1000 final appearance. He will return to a career-high No. 9 in the world rankings on Monday. Raonic will also be a top-eight seed at the French Open in two weeks since Argentinas Juan Martin Del Potro — currently the world No. 7 |

Téma: Jak postupovat / He was the difference in why we came back." FORTALEZA, Brazil — The Dutch were worried about the oppressive heat at Arena Castelao, and they left it with the stifling hot conditions to thank for a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals. An inspired tactical change during the second of two official stoppages led to a late goal from Netherlands forward Wesley Sneijder and an injury-time penalty from Klaas Jan Huntelaar in a dramatic 2-1 victory over Mexico on Sunday. “I moved to Plan B at the cooling break,” said Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal, soon to be the manager at Manchester United. “That is a good way to take advantage of those breaks.” Despite scoring 10 goals in three group matches, the Dutch again started the match with a defensive 5-3-2 system. Van Gaal made the switch to a more attacking 4-3-3 formation in the second half and tweaked it further when referee Pedro Proenca stopped the match in the 76th minute to allow players to rehydrate. That helped turn the match around and extend Mexicos second-round curse to six straight World Cups. “Unbelievable,” said Arjen Robben, the Netherlands forward that earned the late penalty. “Five minutes from full time, we were out.” Instead of the Dutch players, it was the Mexicans who wilted in the heat as they conceded twice as many goals in the final minutes of the match as they had in the entire group stage. “The humidity was against us, but we were fresher and fitter than the Mexicans,” Van Gaal said. “Yes, we escaped. But we showed that we could create more chances with 4-3-3, and the players handled this shift very well.” The Dutch will next face Costa Rica in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Salvador, and may have to play without midfielder Nigel de Jong, who was substituted in the ninth minute with a groin injury. Mexico coach Miguel Herrera, one of the most popular characters at the World Cup because of his emotive ways on the sidelines, blamed Proenca for the loss and accused Robben of diving under a challenge from Rafael Marquez to earn the penalty. “Today it was the man with the whistle who eliminated us from the World Cup,” Herrera said. "If a referee invents a penalty, youre out of the World Cup. “I hope they have a look at what happened and that this gentleman goes home just like we are.” Marquez said Robben admitted that it was a bad call, but added that the Dutchman thought he should have been awarded a spot kick for an earlier challenge. “I spoke with him after the match and he told me that it was not a penalty,” Marquez said. “He said that the first foul was a penalty and that one was not called.” Mexico has now advanced to the second round at the World Cup six straight times and not reached the quarterfinals. The last time the team made it that far was as host of the 1986 tournament. Giovani Dos Santos gave the Mexicans the lead in the 48th minute after a goalless first half, but Sneijder equalized with a hard shot in the 88th. It was the first time Sneijder, who scored five goals at the last World Cup in South Africa, has found the net in Brazil. Robben, who has already scored three goals for the Dutch at this years tournament, then earned the penalty in the fourth minute of injury time but he handed the ball to Huntelaar. “You dont know when your chance will come, but it was today, and so you grab it with both hands,” said Huntelaar, who replaced captain Robin van Persie in the 76th minute. “And it was fantastic.” For Mexico, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was again the star player, pulling off two more great saves after playing a key role in holding Brazil to a 0-0 draw in Group A. But he couldnt block Sneijders shot and guessed wrong when diving in an attempt to stop Huntelaars penalty. “It isnt easy to go out this way, the way this match went,” Ochoa said. “Its just very hard to deal with when victory escapes you this way.” . Nowitzki scored 28 points, Harris had a season-high 14 for the second straight game and the Dallas Mavericks beat the Detroit Pistons 116-106 Sunday night. With Monta Ellis struggling to take care of the ball — he had eight of Dallas 17 turnovers — Harris offered a steady hand in just his fifth game of the season after a setback in recovery cost him an extra month. “Im making the most of my experience on the floor, trying to get used to playing with different guys in different situations,” said Harris, who led Dallas with seven assists while making just one turnover. “Im using this as kind of my training camp.” Brandon Jennings had 26 points and seven assists to lead the Pistons, who lost their fourth straight. Josh Smith had 25 points and eight rebounds, while Greg Monroe had 20 points and nine boards. Jose Calderon scored 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting for Dallas, including a jumper that put the lead back in double digits for good with 2:37 remaining. Nowitzki was 10 of 16 from the field in his second straight game wearing a sleeve on his sore left knee after sitting out a loss in Toronto. Its not the knee that required surgery and sidelined him the first 27 games last season. The 7-footer had a pair of 3s and eight points in the fourth, including one that pushed the lead back to 13 during a stretch of three straight buckets assisted by Harris. Nowitzki scored five straight points in the final 2 minutes after the Pistons had earlier pulled within eight, and he led Dallas with nine rebounds and threw in four assists. “We know Dirk,” Detroit coach Maurice Cheeks said. “Weve known it for a long time. He can make a play for himself or give it to somebody else. He makes those 3s at the right time.” Harris scored five straight points in the final minute of the third quarter to break a 79-all tie, hitting a long jumper and the pulling up for a 3-pointer in transition. His other 3 early in the fourth capped a 15-2 run for a 94-81 Dallas lead. “On a night when Monta couuldnt get it going, its a godsend to have a guy like Devin available,” coach Rick Carlisle said.dddddddddddd “Hes an experienced NBA player whos really done everything.” The Pistons got within five midway through the fourth, but Vince Carter hit a layup to start an 8-0 run as the Mavericks answered consecutive losses on an East Coast trip by winning the opener of a four-game homestand that includes a pair of two-day breaks. After Carters bucket, Brandan Wright had one of his three fourth-quarter blocks on a drive by Kyle Singler, and Calderon hit a layup in transition at the other end. “We were close several times in the game to kind of blowing the top off and we got sloppy with the ball,” said Wright, whose three blocks were matched by Sam Dalembert. “But we stuck with it.” The Pistons opened the second half with a 12-2 run to get even at 58-all. Jennings scored seven straight Detroit points and had 12 in the third quarter, including a 3-pointer that gave Detroit its first lead since late in the first quarter. Jennings go-ahead bucket triggered a stretch of four lead changes and four ties in the third. “We made a nice run,” Cheeks said. “I thought Brandon played well in the third quarter. He was the difference in why we came back.” The Mavericks made 10 of their first 12 shots, but had seven turnovers in the first 9 minutes. DeJuan Blairs layup finished an 8-0 run that gave Dallas its biggest lead of the first half at 49-37, but Detroit answered with seven straight points capped by Kentavious Caldwell-Popes layup after a bad pass from Nowitzki, one of Dallas 11 first-half turnovers. NOTES: Carlisle said before the game he thinks Nowitzki will make the All-Star game as a reserve. His 11-year All-Star streak ended last season. All-Star reserves are announced Thursday. … Pistons C Andre Drummond had four points and six rebounds two nights after his first career game with at least 20 points and 20 rebounds against New Orleans. He had an 11-game streak of at least 11 rebounds snapped. … The Mavericks shot 61 per cent in the first half despite going 1 of 9 from 3-point range. Téma: Jak postupovat / the season on his return to the LONDON — Manchester Uniteds seven-point lead over neighbour Manchester City stayed intact after the title-chasing rivals downed two of the Premier Leagues fallen giants in contrasting ways on Sunday. While United ended up scraping to a nervy 2-1 win at home to Liverpool, City sauntered to a 2-0 victory at Arsenal after playing against 10 men for most of the match. Laurent Koscielnys ninth-minute red card for wrestling Edin Dzeko to the ground inside the area proved decisive, with Dzeko missing the resulting penalty but later adding to the superb opener by James Milner. The only negative for City after its first league win at Arsenal in 38 years was the red card awarded to Vincent Kompany for a two-footed tackle, which will deprive the team of its captain for three games. Robin van Persie set United on the way to victory over its greatest rival at Old Trafford with his league-high 17th goal of the campaign. Nemanja Vidic unwittingly made it 2-0 but United had to resort to some desperate defending to preserve the lead after substitute Daniel Sturridges goal on his league debut for Liverpool. “It was a big game, everyone felt that during the week, and this is a great result,” said Van Persie, whose arrival from Arsenal in August is proving to be a big factor in the title battle. Many pundits were dubbing this weekend a pivotal moment in the title race but the status quo remains with 16 matches still to play. Chelsea, a 4-0 winner at Stoke on Saturday, can keep its slim hopes of catching the Manchester clubs alive by beating Southampton on Wednesday in their game in hand to reduce the gap to United to 11 points. Playing in the days early kickoff, United had piled the pressure on City by holding off a valiant fightback from Liverpool after getting itself into a position to coast home at Old Trafford. “The name of the game is winning,” United manager Alex Ferguson said. “There are moments where you have to defend. Today was one of them.” Van Persies well-taken finish — his ninth goal in his last nine games — in the 19th minute came from one of a host of first-half chances created against a slovenly Liverpool team that gave the ball away with alarming regularity early on. When Vidic made it 2-0 in the 54th by glancing in Patrice Evras downward header, United relaxed and Liverpool started to threaten. Sturridge, who transformed Liverpool following his arrival at the start of the second half, reduced the deficit from close range within three minutes but missed the best of the chances to equalize late on. “I am very proud of the fight of the team in the second half having gone 2-0 down,” said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, whose side stayed in eighth place. “Teams who come here often crumble but I thought by the end we deserved something to be honest.” Arsenal and Liverpool used to be regular challengers for the title but their main target nowadays is qualification for the Champions League. Even that might be beyond Arsenal this season, with the loss to City leaving Arsene Wengers side six points adrift of fourth-place Tottenham in sixth. From the moment Koscielny was dismissed for hauling Dzeko to the ground, the hosts were always up against it. “We started too timidly with not enough authority … and we paid for it,” Wenger said. “Playing 80 minutes with 10 men against 11 is difficult.” City ensured there would be no coming back for Arsenal by scoring twice in a 12-minute span midway through the first half. Milner drove in the 21st-minute opening goal from Carlos Tevezs cute pass and then supplied the cross that Dzeko ended up tapping in after Tevezs flick-on was saved. “Them going down to 10 men helped (but) before the sending-off, we looked the most dangerous side anyway,” Milner said. “It was important we did not give them a sniff.” With City having come from eight points behind with six games left to win the title last season, the current seven-point gap doesnt concern manager Roberto Mancini. “United is a strong team — at this moment, they are playing very well,” he said, “but this season is long and its important we are still there.” Mancini said City will be appealing against Kompanys sending-off, given in the 75th minute when he left the ground and lunged studs-first at Jack Wilshere. “Its absolutely not a red card. He anticipated the opponent,” Mancini said. “He (Kompany) is disappointed. He said, I did nothing.” .Com Tour. Jack Wilsheres 34th-minute opener was quickly followed by a well-taken goal by Olivier Giroud, which proved to be enough to lift Arsenal back above Manchester City and Chelsea after their victories at the weekend. Belgium striker Christian Benteke scored his first goal since mid-September to give Villa hope in the 76th minute but the home side couldnt find an equalizer despite late pressure. “The first half was more about playing, and the second half was more about fighting,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. With its fourth straight league win, Arsenal restored its one-point lead over City after 21 matches. To cap another disappointing result at Villa Park for the mid-table hosts, Villa defender Nathan Baker was carried off on a stretcher in the 21st minute after briefly losing consciousness when he was hit straight in the face by a shot from Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry. Baker required oxygen and a neck brace after being treated on the field for seven minutes. He was later diagnosed with mild concussion, according to broadcaster Sky Sports. The pressure was on Arsenal after seeing the rest of the top seven all pick up victories by two-goal margins over the weekend. However, save for a worrying last 15 minutes when Villaa rallied gamely, the Gunners passed the ball much better and always looked the likely winners.dddddddddddd Wilsheres goal came when he ran onto a cut-back from left back Nacho Monreal, took a touch and shot low in to the bottom corner to the left of goalkeeper Brad Guzan. Just seventeen seconds after the restart, the ball hit the back of the net again. This time Wilshere was the provider, the England midfielder collecting a loose ball and playing a sublime pass through to Giroud, who brought the ball down well and fired across Guzan into the corner. It was the France strikers ninth league goal of the season on his return to the first team after a spell out through injury and illness. Villa had only scored seven goals in its previous 10 home games this season so a comeback was unlikely, even if memories were relatively fresh of a surprise win at Arsenal on the first day of the season. However, when Benteke stooped to head in Matthew Lowtons fine cross at full stretch after Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla sloppily gave possession away, it was all to play for with 14 minutes left. Bentekes downward header, saved comfortably by Wojciech Szczesny, was the closest Villa came to earning a point. “Its a massive three points, especially because we dropped a bit in the second half,” Wilshere said. “We have done that a few times, letting teams come on to us, but we dealt well with it.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’ |
