SAN DIEGO — Less than five months after having back surgery, Wimbledon champion Andy Murray propelled Britain into the next round of the Davis Cup and earned some time off. Murray beat Sam Querrey 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-3 to clinch Britains opening-round victory against the United States on Sunday at Petco Park. “Im proud of the way Im playing just now, because I had to do a lot of work to get back to where I want to be,” Murray said after celebrating with his teammates on the red clay court in a temporary stadium in left field of the downtown home of baseballs San Diego Padres. “Im still not quite there yet,” said Murray, who beat Donald Young in straight sets on Friday. “Winning matches of that length and quality so soon after the surgery is good. And changing surfaces and stuff. Ive done 13 weeks consecutively without a break of training and playing tournaments to try and get myself back. I need a break now to take some days off after I get back home. I deserve it.” Murray won his 18th straight Davis Cup singles match and Britain beat the Americans for the first time since 1935. Britain advanced to the World Group quarterfinals for the first time since 1986. It will face Italy, which defeated Argentina. The United States is relegated to the World Group playoff in September and will need to win to stay in the World Group. The last time Great Britain won in the United States was in 1903 in the World Group Challenge Final at the Longwood Cricket Club in Boston. American captain Jim Courier was asked to put that in perspective. “It feels great to be alive in 2014,” Courier said. “We certainly dont feel a lot of kinship to the last team that lost to the Brits on American soil since theyve been dead a long time. It has nothing to do with us. We come to play on our own terms.” Murray split tiebreakers with Querrey in the first two sets, breezed through the third set in 29 minutes and won the match when Querrey returned a serve long. Murray leaned back and pumped both fists, and then swatted the ball into the stands on the opposite end of the court before joining his teammates in a celebration huddle. Later, he had a hot bath, an ice bath and other treatment on his back. Britain clinched the match at 3-1. The fourth singles match was cancelled. Murray reached matched point on Querreys serve in the eighth game of the fourth set before the American won three straight points to stay alive. After falling behind 15-30 in the ninth game, Murray got a new racket. He then double-faulted, giving Querrey break point. Murray won the next three points to clinch the match. In the first-set tiebreaker, Murray was down a mini-break before rallying to win when Querrey hit a drop volley into the net. “I tried to do a little too much with it,” Querrey said “Every now and then you miss an easy one. It happened to be at a big moment.” Querrey won the second-set tiebreaker on a forehand passing shot and then jumped for joy. Murray immediately rebounded by breaking Querrey twice to go up 4-0 in the third set. He broke Querrey again to win the set in a seventh game that went to deuce four times, clinching it when Querrey hit into the net. Murray said it was important to win the first set "because I felt like I was playing the better tennis for the most part of it. Then he started playing better at the end of the set. He probably played a better tiebreak than me as well. Just missed a couple of shots, like the volley on set point was a bad one, but he got himself into a great position. “If I had lost that it wouldve been tough after having served for it. Yeah, in these sorts of matches, first set can be crucial.” Although Murray struggled on clay last year, he said he was surprised the Americans chose that surface for this match. He said the clay might have affected Querrey in his five-set loss to James Ward on Friday. “When we got here the court was pretty slippery and tough to move on,” Murray said. "I would say for myself, one of my strengths is my movement on the court. I didnt know if that was something they had done intentionally or just the nature of putting down a temporary clay court. “Obviously it did have a bearing in the tie, you know, for Sam especially. I think his best surface is hard courts. He will have had all his best results on hard courts.” . BUFFALO, N.Y. — Mike Smiths unwitting mistake gave the short-handed Buffalo Sabres a 2-1 overtime win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night. With 3:47 gone in overtime, Sabres defenceman Mark Pysyk took a shot that hit Martin Hanzal and became lodged in the back of Smiths jersey. The Coyotes goalie retreated into his crease, unknowingly carrying the puck across the line and ending the game. “I didnt feel it at all,” Smith said of the bizarre goal. “I didnt know what happened. I knew that puck went up in the air but had no idea where it went after that.” Ryan Miller made 36 saves for the Sabres, and said hes never seen anything quite like Mondays ending. “A little unlucky for Smith there,” Miller said. “I think hell be shaking his head for a while. Its a little bit of a Christmas present for us and well take it.” The Sabres started the game with just 16 skaters after a virus left Linus Omark, Cody Hodgson, Ville Leino, Marcus Foligno and Alexander Sulzer unable to play. Buffalo was only able to recall Pysyk and left wing Johan Larsson from its AHL affiliate in Rochester because the team was en route to the Spengler Cup tournament in Davos, Switzerland. Tyler Ennis also scored for Buffalo, which is 4-0-1 in its last five home games after starting the season 3-12-1 at First Niagara Center. The fans gave the Sabres several standing ovations throughout the contest, and the team went to centre ice to salute them after the game. “I play on emotion and when fans are just supportive like that, its a huge boost,” Sabres rookie centre Zemgus Girgensons said. “First 30 games fans were there for us but we didnt play well.” Hanzal scored for the Coyotes, who concluded a four-game road trip with a 1-1-2 record. Smith made 30 saves. Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said the odd ending fit his teams performance. “The game is an honest game,” he said. “If youre supposed to win, usually you can win. And we didnt deserve to win tonight, so those things happen.” Phoenix outshot Buffalo 15-3 in the first period, though the two best chances belonged to the Sabres. The Coyotes opened the scoring 19 seconds into the second period when Hanzal raised his stick to deflect Connor Murphys slap shot over Miller. The play was reviewed and it was determined Hanzals stick struck the puck below the height of the cross bar. Miller didnt like the call and directed blame to the NHL Situation Room in Toronto, which reviewed the goal. “It hit the top of his blade and his blade was up high,” the goaliee said.dddddddddddd “The puck wasnt rising, it was already over the crossbar in my mind so I think Toronto got it absolutely wrong.” Buffalo native and former Sabres left wing Tim Kennedy recorded an assist on the goal. Miller kept the deficit at 1 by coming out to the top of his crease to stop a high shot from Michael Stone. Girgensons was thwarted on a breakaway just two minutes later as Murphy grabbed the rookies stick before he could get a shot on Smith. There was no penalty on the play. Drew Stafford left the Sabres with 15 available skaters after receiving a five-minute elbowing penalty and game misconduct. Facing the boards to the right of Smith, Stafford swung his elbow backward at oncoming Oliver Ekman-Larsson and caught the defenceman in the face. The Sabres killed off 2 1/2 minutes of the major penalty before Hanzal took a roughing penalty. In the remaining 30 seconds, Smith stopped Otts slap shot during a 2-on-1 break. Buffalos penalty kill has been successful on 21 of its last 22 chances. “Short bench, all the penalties we had, it didnt seem like anything in the game was really going our way,” Girgensons said. “We just worked probably the hardest weve worked throughout the whole season and stuck to the system. Thats the way we won.” Ennis tied the score 14:01 into the third. Girgensons forced a turnover at the Coyotes blue line and found Ennis, who beat Smith for his eighth goal of the season. “The guy just fell and I lifted his stick and slid the puck through the two guys I was hoping it would go through and Ennis finished it really good,” Girgensons said. Jamie McBain had a partial breakaway in overtime but was stopped by Smith, who quickly had to make a second stop on McBain. The game ended moments later with Pysyks goal. “I just put it on net, figuring Id maybe get a rebound,” Pysyk said. “Just popped up right in the air and was lucky enough that he spun and it went right into the net.” Smith was embarrassed by his teams effort considering the Sabres line-up woes and an impending three-day break for Christmas. “That was embarrassing as far as Im concerned,” he said. “You go on a Christmas break, you have three days off and you come out like that? I think thats a bunch of garbage as far as far as Im concerned.” NOTES: The Sabres placed C Kevin Porter on injured reserve before the game and assigned D Chad Ruhwedel to AHL Rochester. … Phoenix scratched Gilbert Brule for the first time in three games. … John Scott played forward and defence for the Sabres. There was no shortage of big names moved over the final 24 hours before the NHLs trade deadline. But at the same time, several of the prominent players who were most talked about ahead of the deadline frenzy ended up staying put after 3pm et on Wednesday. Front and centre on that list was Ryan Kesler, who was not dealt by the Vancouver Canucks despite rumours of strong interest from a number of NHL teams – especially the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Canucks did not get the package they were seeking to trade the 29-year-old centre. “We entertained multiple offers in multiple situations and none of them fit with our long-term vision,” explained Canucks general manager Mike Gillis after the deadline had passed. “When youre under-performing like we are, you get calls from lots of teams about lots of players.” With two years remaining on his contract at $5 million per season, Kesler was an attractive target for teams as a cost-effective two-way veteran who could add some scoring punch. After the deadline passed Kesler still had the endorsement of his head coach. “Kesler has been our most consistent and hardest working player. I dont have to say a word to him,” said head coach John Tortorella. In Calgary, many expected forward Mike Cammalleri to be traded for the third time in his 10-year NHL career. But the 31-year-old remains with the Flames despite being eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer. Flames president of hockey operations and acting general manager Brian Burke explained afterwards that the team will continue to talk to Cammalleri about a contract extension. “I think Mike Cammalleri has been an ultimate professional,” said Burke. “Prices on all the packages dropped. We reacted and dropped our price but nothing made sense for us.” In New Jersey, there was speculation that Martin Brodeurs career-long tenure with the Devils might have been coming to an end with the 41-year-old eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Playing primarily as Cory Schneiders back-up this season, Brodeur was thought to be willing to waive his no-trade clause if general manager Lou Lamoriello had interest in moving him. But as the deadline passed, Brodeur remained with the Devils to complete his 20th season and Lamoriello was not happy about the rumours that had circulated about his veteran netminder. “Its just a shame that without no substance at different times and no facts that people say things,” Lamoriello said. Lamoriello was not even willing to disclose if Brodeurs name had come up in trade talks at all. “Why are we dealing in hypotheticals, I have no idea,” Lamoriello said. “Its not the case. So why we react and try to look for something thats no there and create a story out of nothing.” . . PAUL, Minn. MELBOURNE, Australia — With a quick wave and a smile, Kim Clijsters walked out of Rod Laver Arena for probably the last time in her professional career on Thursday, leaving behind a crowd that has come to view her as their own. Clijsters, who plans to retire at the end of the season, was adopted by Australian fans when she began dating Lleyton Hewitt in 2000 and the affection didnt wear off after the couple split in 2004. Playing on the Australia Day national holiday, Clijsters every winner was raucously cheered against Victoria Azarenka, but the Belarusian maintained her composure to win a seesaw semifinal 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. One of the biggest cheers came when Clijsters walked off court and disappeared from view. The Belgian, though, has never been the sentimental type. “I mean, you dont think about it,” she said of her emotions when leaving Rod Laver Arena. “The loss is too fresh I think to think about something else. So Im sure that will sink in in the next couple of days.” By that time, she will back at her home in Belgium, where she lives with American husband Brian Lynch, a retired basketball player, and their 3-year-old daughter Jada. Lynch sat nervously courtside on Thursday to watch an absorbing semifinal, one of the best womens matches of the tournament so far. “Im sure I lost a few days of my life in that box but it was all worth it. Wifey is a true champ!” he tweeted afterward. Spending more time with her husband and daughter is one of Clijsters priorities after she ends her career, but she says she isnt in a hurry to leave tennis behind. “I enjoy being at home. But I still enjoy playing tennis very much. I enjoy the challenge,” she said. "Im lucky enough that Im capable of being in this position where Jada and my husband, theyre capable of travelling with me, because otherwise it would be too hard to do that. “Tennis has given me so many great memories and emotional rollercoasters. I dont think you can experience that again in any other thing in life, maybe except giving birth.” Clijsters has already retired once — in 2007 — but was tempted back in 2009 and has since won three Grand Slam titles. She won the Australian Open a year ago but the remainder of the season was marred by shoulder, wrist and abdominal injuries.dddddddddddd A twisted ankle almost curtailed the defence of her title here. Playing Li Na in the fourth round, she stumbled and turned her left ankle midway through the first set and needed immediate treatment. As her opponent struggled with nerves, a hobbling Clijsters somehow came from four match points down to win in three sets. She had considered quitting, but didnt want to retire from her last match at the Australian Open. It was that sort of fighting spirit that endeared her to the sport-loving Australian public and it was in evidence again against the 22-year-old Azarenka. Scampering from side to side, retrieving balls that most players would not have got close to let alone returned, Clijsters didnt seem at all bothered by her ankle. Several times, she almost did the splits as she stretched out wide to force her opponent to play one more ball. Trailing 4-2 in the deciding set, Clijsters recovered from 40-0 down on her opponents serve, saved another three game points and broke back — to elicit what must have been one of the loudest cheers of the fortnight. “She made me run so much, I felt like I was running like a marathon out there,” Azarenka said. It wasnt enough. Azarenka broke straight back and served out the win to reach her first Grand Slam final. “Its unfortunate when you get so close,” Clijsters said. "I know Im capable of beating all these girls, but its whoevers better on the day wins and gets to go through. “But I could have been home already two days ago. I feel that I really gave it 200 per cent, so in that way I really dont feel like I could have done anything differently these last two weeks.” Clijsters didnt reflect on her loss for long before looking ahead to her next target: the French Open, where she was the beaten finalist in 2001 and 2003. “It is a challenge,” she said. “Its one of the goals that I have this season, to give myself a really good preparation on the clay courts and try to be close to my best level when I get to the French Open.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was banned for seven matches on Tuesday for head-butting an opposing player during a Premier League game, further besmirching the reputation of one of English footballs most hot-headed coaches. Pardew was hit with the heaviest punishment ever inflicted on a Premier League manager, which will involve him initially serving a three-match stadium suspension. He is banned from being on the touchline for the other four games. “As I have made clear, I deeply regret the incident and again wholeheartedly apologize to all parties for my conduct, which I understand was not acceptable,” Pardew said in a statement released by Newcastle after an FA hearing. “I will accept the punishment handed down by the FA today.” Pardew already has been sanctioned by Newcastle, accepting a formal warning and a fine of 100,000 pounds ($168,000), following his confrontation with Hull midfielder David Meyler on March 1. Meyler initially barged into Pardew as he looked to retrieve the ball for a throw-in in the 72nd minute of the game at KC Stadium. Pardew squared up to Meyler and moved his head in the direction of the players face, then was sent to the stands. The FA also fined Pardew 60,000 pounds ($100,000) and warned him about his future conduct. Pardew is the first Premier League manager to receive a stadium ban. Earlier this season, then-Blackpool manager Paul Ince received a five-match stadium ban from the FA for violently shoving a fourth official during a rant filled with profanity. It is the latest touchline incident involving the hot-headed Pardew, who was banned for two matches last season for pushing a linesman and also was warned about his conduct in January after abusing Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini in the technical area. In light of this latest touchline spat, Pardew said he may have to stay in his seat in the dugout and resist the temptation to get close to the action. “Ive always been involved by being on the sideline,” Pardew said. “But I dont think it can harm my managementship to sit there, and maybe Im at an age now where I need to.” Pardew will not be able to attend Craven Cottage for Newcastles match at Fulham on Saturday. He will also miss the home games against Crystal Palace and Everton. Pardew has apologized to Hull and Meyler. Police said no criminal action will be taken against him. WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin was a bit off — and still on target. The Russian star scored with 48 seconds left and goalie Phillip Grubauer off for an extra attacker to cap a late three-goal rally and the Washington Capitals went on to beat Philadelphia 5-4 in a shootout Sunday. “Ill be honest with you, I missed my shot,” Ovechkin said. “It was kind of funny. I didnt get all of it.” It was the second time in six days that Ovechkin scored the tying goal with less than a minute left to cap a rally from three goals down. On Tuesday night in a 6-5 shootout victory over Tampa Bay, Ovechkin powered the comeback with four goals. Mike Green cut Washingtons deficit to 4-2 with 8:40 remaining, and Dmitry Orlov pulled the Capitals within one with 3:31 to go. The two defencemen scored on long slap shots. “I think we had too much perimeter stuff, and once we just started peppering him with shots, one was bound to go in,” Green said. “You look at the goals that went in, he either didnt see it, and it was just a floater, which could have been an easy save from that far out.” Ovechkin then tied it with his NHL-leading 27th goal. “I think we had luck on our side today, especially at the end of the game,” Ovechkin said. “Ill take it and the team will take it.” In the shootout, Eric Fehr and Nicklas Backstrom for Washington and Grubauer made two saves on three shots to give Washington an improbable victory in the first meeting of the teams since they brawled at the end of the Capitals 7-0 victory in Philadelphia on Nov. 1. Marcus Johansson had a first-period power play goal for Washington, scoring on a pass from Ovechkin that went through the legs of a Philadelphia defender. Claude Giroux, Mark Streit, Sean Couturier and Jacob Voracek scored for Philadelphia, and Michael Raffl had three assists. “It doesnt matter how many goals you score and how many pointts you have in this league,” Streit said.dddddddddddd “Its a very bad loss.” Streit scored the go-ahead goal early in the second period when he picked off a pass by Washington defender Karl Alzner and received a give-and-go feed from Raffl to make it 2-1. When Couturier and Voracek scored 1:14 apart early in the third period, the Flyers appeared on their way. “Nothing changed,” Washington coach Adam Oates said. “A little bit of luck on the first goal. We got some life. The emotion of the game, I guess would be the one thing. Obviously the crowd gets into it and you feel a little bit better and make a push. Win a draw and before you know it, its a game.” Washingtons Michael Latta and Philadelphias Zac Rinaldo traded punches and were sent off in the second period. Early in the third, the Capitals Steve Oleksy and the Flyers Wayne Simmonds received majors for fighting. The teams will meet again Tuesday night in Philadelphia. The primary combatants from Nov. 1 in a rare fight between goalies — the Capitals Braden Holtby and the Flyers Ray Emery — were on the bench. Steve Mason had 29 saves for Philadelphia, and Grubauer stopped 24 shots for Washington. NOTES: The Capitals have moved Brooks Laich to the long-term injured reserve list retroactive to Nov. 27 because of a strained groin. Sunday was the eighth straight game Laich has missed. He would be eligible to return Dec. 22. The 30-year-old centre played only nine games last season as he battled a similar injury, leading to sports hernia surgery in April. Laichs problems continued in September when he left the ice with a strained hip flexor in the first 10 minutes of the Capitals opening preseason practice. … The Capitals recalled centre Michael Latta from Hershey and activated defenceman John Erskine, who had missed 21 games with a knee injury. BARCELONA, Spain — Real Madrid lost 2-1 at Sevilla on Wednesday in the aftermath of its stinging “clasico” defeat as it slipped behind in the Spanish title race, while Atletico Madrid and Barcelona kept winning to move ahead of their rival in the standings. Cristiano Ronaldo put Madrid in charge with his league-leading 27th goal of the season in the 14th minute, but Sevilla striker Carlos Bacca scored twice, in the 19th and 73rd, to complete the comeback. Madrids loss at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium came four days after it squandered a chance to effectively end Barcelonas title defence, with Lionel Messi out-dueling Ronaldo by scoring a hat trick for a thrilling 4-3 win in the Spanish capital. These consecutive losses came after Carlo Ancelottis side had gone undefeated for 31 straight matches. “We have to keep working, fighting and ask our fans for forgiveness,” said Madrid full back Marcelo. “Its tough to do what we did, to keep winning for so many games. We have lost two games. They arent more important, but they are critical. Now everything is much more difficult.” Diego Costas second-half header gave Atletico a 1-0 victory at home over Granada as it moved three points clear of Madrid with eight rounds remaining. Lionel Messi and Neymar helped Barcelona stay one point behind Atletico as it rose into second place, but the 3-0 win over Celta Vigo came at the cost of goalkeeper Victor Valdes tearing a right knee ligament. “I am happy for the goals and for having won the other day at the Santiago Bernabeu,” said Neymar. “(But) the victory is sad because of Valdes injury.” Ronaldo struck first at Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium when his free kick took a deflection off the arm of Bacca, catching goalkeeper Antonio “Beto” Bastos out of position and helpless as he watched the ball float into his net. But Bacca equalized from Jose Antonio Reyes pass after Xabi Alonso had lost possession. Madrid then wasted several chances, and Sevilla tilted the match in its favour in the second half when Ivan Rakitic used a superb control of a pass before playing Bacca clear to beat goalie Diego Lopez for the winner. Sevilla extended its winning streak to six games in a row as it remained in fifth place. Atletico stayed unbeaten at home in league play this season after limiting Granadas attack with its stout defence before Diego Costa turned home Jose Sosas corner kick in the 63rd for his 24th league goal of the season. Earlier at Camp Nou, Valdes right knee buckled after a routine save in the 22nd, and he had to be shuttled off the pitch with his gloved hands covering his face. The club later said he will need surgery, which would rule him out for the season. Neymar netted twice from passes by Alexis Sanchez. The Brazil striker opened the scoring in the sixth minute and struck again in the 67th after Messi recorded his 22nd league goal of the season on the half-hour mark. Celta, coached by former Barcelona player and B-team manager Luis Enrique, never mounted a challenge and its high defensive line proved easy pickings for the Catalan sides passing game. Messi got things rolling when he dribbled at Celtas defence and spotted Alexiss run down the right edge of the area, where he received Messis pass and squared for Neymar to tap home. After Jose Pinto went on to replace the injured Valdes, Messi took Andres Iniestas pass, rounded keeper Yoel Rodriguez and fired the ball inside the upright for his eighth goal in his last four matches. Pain in his left leg kept Iniesta from returning after halftime, but he said he expected to be fit to play at Espanyol on Saturday. The 38-year-old Pinto was tested in the 52nd and was up to the challenge when he made back-to-back reflex saves to turn away Augusto Fernandezs powerful strike and Santi Minas follow-up attempt. He went on to make two more noteworthy saves. Neymar hit a second time from a long pass by Alexis when he managed to slot the ball through two defenders and beyond Rodriguez. Also, Rayo Vallecano beat Osasuna 1-0 thanks to Joaquin Lavirreys 90th-minute penalty for its fourth win in five rounds to edge away from the relegation zone. MONTREAL — It will be up to Frank Klopas to salvage something from an all-but lost 2014 season and try to build the Montreal Impact into a winning team. Club president Joey Saputo removed his friend and long-time Impact player, coach and manager Nick De Santis from his job as sporting director on Wednesday and handed control of the Major League Soccer team to Klopas, the head coach and director of player personnel. “Nick will have an administrative role, but will not be involved in the management of the technical team,” said Saputo. Pressure from fans and the media had been building since the end of last season to replace De Santis, who seemed to be out of answers for a free fall that began with a 1-6-1 finish to the 2013 regular season and a 3-12-5 start to the 2014 campaign. De Santiss failure to make off-season changes other than replacing coach Marco Schallibaum with Klopas was his undoing, as the same weaknesses on defence and in the midfield that were exposed late last summer carried into this season. Now Klopas will have full control to decide who will play and who will sit out, and what trades or signings will be made. “He will have the responsibility to tweak this team according to what he feels he needs to be more competitive for the remainder of this season, the 2014 CONCACAF champions league and the 2015 season,” said Saputo. The Impact have already made a handful of player moves since April, shipping out defender Jeb Brovsky, midfielders Collen Warner and Sanna Nyassi and forward Andrew Wenger. Midfielder Hernan Bernardello left in midseason to sign with a Mexican club. None of the moves made much difference as the Impact, now on a five-game losing run, sank further into the MLS basement. Saputo hopes to eliminate confusion over who is in charge, particularly among the players brought in by De Santis and those acquired by Klopas. “I want the message passed to the players that the person on top is Frank Klopas and not Nick De Santis. Its Frank who is the players boss,” he said. Klopas is the Impacts third head coach in as manny seasons in MLS, following Jesse Marsch for the expansion season in 2012 and Schallibaum last year.dddddddddddd Saputo said he has assured Klopas, who signed in December for two years plus an option year, that he will have his job at least until the end of the 2015 campaign. “He has the security regardless of what happens this year, so if Frank decides tomorrow that he wants to start playing some of the younger players, I give him full responsibility, knowing that his job is not on the line,” said Saputo. “Its obvious we need to change.” The 47-year-old Klopas has extensive MLS experience as a player and as a former technical director and head coach of the Chicago Fire. It was De Santis who pushed for him to be hired. While reaching the MLS playoffs will be a long shot with only 14 regular season games left to play, the Impact can save face with a strong showing in the Champions League. They begin CONCACAF play Tuesday at home against FAS of El Salvador. One of the clubs high points came in 2009 when they drew more than 50,000 fans to Olympic Stadium for a quarter-final against Santos Laguna of Mexico. They also expect to have a second designated player, Argentine midfielder Ignacio Piatti, in camp starting next week. More player signings, although not a new DP, are planned for the off-season. Saputo did not say what De Santiss new duties will be. Montreal native De Santis has been part of the Impact since the team was formed from the ashes of the defunct Montreal Supra in 1993. The 46-year-old won an APSL championship as a player in 1994, won the A-League title as coach in 2004 and got a USL First Division championship as a manager in 2009. “He was a key element and architect of this organization and one of the reasons we are in MLS today,” Saputo said of De Santis. “He is a friend, however, we are in a results-driven business and unfortunately, since July 2013, our results have not been what we expected them to be and hes paying the price for it.” The Impacts next game is at home Saturday against Toronto FC. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hi Kerry, I was wondering what influence, if any, the home team fans can have on the on-ice officials? If a referee misses or blows a call, but its not missed by the other 18,000 refs in the arena and lets the referee know about it by booing and such, does that impact any future calls or how the game is further officiated? Does the name calling and heckling by the fans get under your skin or just fall on deaf ears? Always looking forward to your column, Stephen Lee Stephen, In theory the objective of every sports official is to remain focused and in the moment, regardless of mistakes that have been made. Dwelling on a missed/wrong call or to be intimidated by the fallout from players, coaches and of course, the fans is a recipe for a ref to compromise his integrity and/or commit further errors. It is best to keep all mental thoughts in perpetual motion to allow your brain to function in the moment. A missed opportunity is one youll never get back. A makeup call diminishes any credibility and respect that every official works so hard to achieve. In practice however, we must recognize that refs arent mechanical robots but human beings with feelings, emotions and individualized character traits. These traits are developed over a lifetime but especially during the early formative years. Positive and negative elements of an individuals personal makeup and self-worth are brought into the arena every game and will often dictate how an official responds in stressful situations. One of the most basic human instincts is a desire to be loved; okay maybe way over the top here but how about a need to be liked, appreciated and accepted? If we can agree on that premise then, now place yourself as a referee in front of 20,000 out-of-control hockey fans chanting in unison “Ref, You SUCK,” throwing debris at you and threatening your personal safety. How would that make you feel? More importantly, how would you respond? Would you have the courage and personal strength to stand tall in the face of adversity or would you give in to the pressure and alter your judgment in their favor? The flip side is, if you possessed a combative nature, stubbornness and/or arrogance as dominant traits, you just might stick it to someone! What Im really saying here is that the response and action taken by an official when hes pushed to the wall results from his unique internal makeup. All referees will rely on their strengths (skating, judgment, positioning, communication skills etc.) but I found it was most important to recognize my personal deficiencies and keep them in check. I never lacked courage but I recognized very early in my career that positive trait could quickly erode to a stubborn Ill show you attitude that was very counterproductive once my authority was challenged. I have observed a potential infraction and, as the information was being sifted through my brain, the crowd reaction beat my switch to pull the trigger, giving the impression that the crowd made the call. We have all witnessed situations (or been involved in them) when the ref has been jolted to a better sense of awareness as a result of the crowd reaction. Whenever the ref raises his arm, the call should be scrutinized based on its merit and not through the reaction time it took for the referee to make it. I saw old-school referee Wally Harris (excellent ref and great guy) call an infraction that happened behind his back when he caught the reflection of the play in the glass. It was a legitimate infraction but unorthodox in Wallys detection method. Nothing ever phased Wally. A game was held up for over 20 minutes in the Boston Garden to clear debris from the ice that was thrown at this courageous ref. While I experience many emotionally charged moments from fan vitriol, allow me to share one unusual incident. It resulted from ejecting Blackhawks coach Orval Tessier from a game in the Chicago Stadium just prior to him being terminated and replaced by Bob Pulford Feb. 4, 1984. Tessier was feeling intense pressure with speculation of his imminent termination. His players were still smarting from the coachs public suggestion they required heart transplants from the Mayo Clinic. The comment backfired and their ongoing play reflected a seeming lack of interest. When Mt. Orval erupted to incur the game ejection, Hawk fans (21,000 strong) started throwing everything that wasnt nailed down. I was their intended target and the ice became a sea of debris. A chair even flew over the glass from the high-priced seats. I took safe refuge underneath the big clock above centre ice. Coach Tessier walked across the ice to make his way to the Hawks dressing room and slipped as he kicked at a popcorn box in his path. My mouth was dry as sawdust and the blood felt like it had drained from my entire body, causing numbness in my extremities as shock and awe rained down from the rafters in the Madhouse on Madison. My emotions were raw. I felt vulnerable and alone as Hawk fans did their very best to inflict some form of retribution against me. Moral support then came to me from the most unusual of places. Captain Doug Wilson and alternate captain Bob Murray skated up to me. I was expecting additional protests to be lodged against me by the two captains. Instead, they thanked me for ejecting their coach and expressed a wish that I had done so earlier in the game! I thank them sincerely for the support they provided but suggested they should move away since the three of us made a bigger target and I feared for their personal safety. When the fans had nothing left to throw, the rink attendants filled wheelbarrows with the trash and the game resumed without further incident. Buoyed in part with the support I had received from the Hawks captains, in addition to my personal character traits, I weathered the storm. I did not allow the fans to dictate what I called moving forward in that game. After all, they had nothing left to throw at me! . So far, his encore is even better. Wainwright became the National Leagues first eight-game winner by dominating Cincinnati again, and the St. . The solutions? Not so much. Given an extra week to stew over the worst start in 45 years, Tomlin is tweaking the lineup hoping to find a spark that will help his team begin the long road back to respectability. http://www.shoptheofficialsteelers.com/Elite-Le…. — Al Jefferson thinks hes finally figured out the NBA game. .C. — Al Jefferson thinks hes finally figured out the NBA game.NEW YORK, N.Y. – Henrik Lundqvist wasnt happy going into Game 6 against Montreal. Given the hook midway through the previous game of the Eastern Conference final, the US$100-million-plus Rangers goalie had been doing a lot of soul-searching. “You have so many highs. You have a few lows where youre questioning a lot of things, but then you just have to make up your mind,” Lundqvist said after Thursdays 1-0 series-clinching win over Montreal. "You cant have any excuses. You just have to go out there. “I kept telling myself all day, believe in what youre doing. Ive been in that spot before. It gets silly, you get pulled. You have a tough game, but you just have to stay confident.” The mental review concluded, Lundqvist returned to world-class form. In dispatching the Canadiens to win the series four games to two, Lundqvist only had to deal with 18 shots. There were stretches of inactivity for the stylish Swede but he had to be razor sharp on a couple of occasions. Lundqvist, in 20 playoff games this season, leads the NHL with a .928 save percentage and ranks second with a 2.03 goals-against average. New York will need more of the same in the Stanley Cup final. “He was totally focused,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said of his goalie. "He was probably a little upset tonight coming into the game. I dont know if it was because of the opportunity or if he was upset with the way it ended in Montreal in Game 5. “But he was definitely focused, and those are not easy games to play. I mean, there is not a lot of work, but youve got to stay sharp. He stayed really sharp.” The biggest save came in the second period off Thomas Vanek. It was an amazing circus-like save with his arm and then blocker as Lundqvist, who lost his stick in the process, corkscrewed his body to stop the close-range shot that deflected off a diving defenceman. Asked what he thought of the play, Vigneault replied: “Same thing you did. Wow.” The Rangers scored soon after to book a ticket to their first Cup final in 20 years. When the final whistle blew, the normally ice-cool Lundqvist threw his arms up in the air and pumped them in celebration, before being mobbed by his teammates as New York celebrated its 11th trip to the final. The Rangers will open the championship series next Wednesday in either Chicago or Los Angeles. “Its going to be a great challenge,” said Lundqvist before knowing the identity of his opponent. "Were going to play against a really good team. Its about, for us, in the room to remind each other that this is such a special moment that you have to grab it. You have to make sure youre ready and play your absolute best. “Youre not going to get that many opportunities. Ive been here for nine years. This is my first final, and now its all about preparing the right way and try to leave it all out there.” In front of Lundqvist, the Rangers can roll four lines. Vigneault started the fourth line of Dominic Moore, Brian Boyle and Derek Dorsett against the Habs in Game 6 and they responded with the lone goal on the night. The goal came through nose-to-the-grindstone resolve as the Rangers outworked a tired Montreal quintet to keep the puck in the Habs end. Left alone behind the goal, Boyle sent a perfect pass through defenceman Francis Bouillon and Moore snapped a shot past Dustin Tokarski on the stick side. The Rangers rrely on goaltending and penalty killing to limit the opposition offence.dddddddddddd Its a recipe that worked well against Montreal, other than Game 5 when Lundqvist was pulled after giving up four goals on 19 shots. New York also has speed in the form of Carl Hagelin, Mats Zuccarello and others. There are Cup winners in Brad Richards and Martin St. Louis. And first-class defencemen in Ryan McDonagh and Dan Girardi. There is character galore. Moore and St. Louis have had to endure personal tragedies in recent time, but found refuge at the rink, according to Vigneault. The team is well-drilled and does the little things well, although there was a tendency to take poor penalties against Montreal. Behind the bench, Vigneault is a calming presence. In a year that saw the Rangers wobble out of the starting gate, forced to play on the road for most of October due to Madison Square Garden renovations, Vigneault kept the train on the tracks while changing the team culture. Lundqvist also endured a rocky start, going 8-11 with a 2.51 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage in his first 20 games. “We did change a lot of things going into the season. I think it was a time where we had to find ourselves a little bit as a group,” the goalie said. "But personally, I think it was my toughest start in my career, my 12, 13 years as a pro, if I combine the Sweden years. “So its definitely a tough test. But it feels better when you turn it around and good things start to happen. Its been a great ride so far, especially the second half of the season. Its been a lot of fun to be around the guys, thats for sure.” Lundqvist, in the final year of a six-year, US$41.25 million deal, signed a seven-year contract extension worth US$59.5 million that will make him the NHLs highest-paid goalie. The win that moved the Rangers into the final came a year to the day that New York fired fiery coach John Tortorella, who is worlds apart from Vigneault. “I personally just like how calm he is,” Lundqvist said of Vigneault. "Obviously, he changed a lot the way we play, so it was a big change early on in training camp and the first couple months for us to adjust and for me to adjust. It was a little different game. But he was very patient and calm and understood the process for us to get there. Its going to take a while to get there. “But obviously having Tortorella for almost five years and having that coaching style and then A.V. comes in, theyre opposites. As a player, you learn from both, and I enjoy both. But its refreshing when you see a new coaching style that you havent had before and the way he handles pressure situations. … Hes pretty consistent with the way he talks to us good or bad.” Vigneault is the picture of calm, although he is no automaton. “Yeah, he gets worked up. Hes a human being, and hes a coach,” said Richards. "Coaches have to do things sometimes to get things going. But his worked up is different than other peoples worked up. Different from my worked up and your worked up, everybody has different ways of showing it. “I think youve just got to be around it and be behind closed doors, and youll know when he wants a little more of a practice or a little more preparation or whatever hes doing. He still sets the tone when you see him that day, if things need to be changed or need to be worked on.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

CLEVELAND — A trip to Progressive Field last month began a downward spiral for the Detroit Tigers. Their return visit could signal the start of a significant reversal. Max Scherzer pitched six strong innings, Miguel Cabrera homered and drove in three runs, and the Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 10-4 on Sunday for a three-game sweep. The Tigers, swept in a three-game series at Cleveland in May, have won four in a row overall and reclaimed first place in the AL Central. “Were playing good baseball right now,” Scherzer said. “If we play good baseball and do the little things right, were as good as any team in the American League. Thats what we did this series.” The first trip to Cleveland began a 9-20 tailspin that dropped the Tigers out of first place for the first time this season. Manager Brad Ausmus is pleased his team finally seems to be out of its funk. “We played well here,” he said. “Were playing better, obviously, but Im not going to make any declarations that anything is starting or finishing.” Scherzer (9-3) bounced back from one of the worst outings of his career. The reigning AL Cy Young winner allowed 10 runs in four innings against Kansas City on Tuesday. Scherzer gave up one run and six hits, striking out eight. He was struck in the side of the right leg by Lonnie Chisenhalls line drive in the sixth, but recovered to throw him out and completed the inning. “That one hurt,” Scherzer said. “He hit it good. My leg is planted into the ground, so it has no give. I wore the whole thing.” Ausmus and a team trainer checked on Scherzer, who quickly indicated he wanted to remain in the game. Nick Swisher doubled, but David Murphy grounded out and Scherzer pumped his fist as he headed to the dugout. “His velocity actually went up after that,” Ausmus said. Cabrera hit his 13th homer in the first, added an RBI single in the third and drove in a run with a grounder in the fifth when Detroit scored seven times. Josh Tomlin (4-5) allowed eight runs in four-plus innings. He faced six hitters in the fifth and all reached base. Cabrera, whose RBI double in the 10th inning Saturday gave Detroit a 5-4 win, lined a full-count pitch to right after Tomlin retired the first two batters in the first. The Tigers took advantage of errors by shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and centre fielder Michael Bourn in taking a 9-0 lead in the fifth. “Against any team, if you give them extra opportunities, theres a decent chance you pay for it,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “They just blew it open and we helped them. They dont need the help.” Singles by Ian Kinsler and Austin Jackson placed runners at the corners. Cabreras grounder scored a run - the call of an apparent force play at second was overturned when a replay review requested by Ausmus showed the shortstop dropped the throw from Jason Kipnis before completing the out on Jackson. Bourn charged in for Victor Martinezs line drive but dropped the ball, loading the bases. J.D. Martinez, extending his hitting streak to 12 games, doubled to right before Nick Castellanos doubled to left for a 7-0 lead. Austin Romine added an RBI single off Kyle Crockett. J.D Martinez is batting .447 with four homers, five doubles and 11 RBIs in his hitting streak. Even though Torii Hunter is expected to return Tuesday in Texas after missing six games with a strained right hamstring, Martinez will remain in the lineup. “I dont see how I can take him out unless he tells he doesnt want to play or cant play,” Ausmus said. Michael Brantley drove in three runs for Cleveland with an RBI double in the fifth and a two-run double in the ninth. NOTES: Cleveland has lost four of five at home since winning 10 straight at Progressive Field. … Tomlin, who has lost three straight starts, has allowed a team-high 10 homers in 55 1-3 innings. … The Indians committed three errors, bringing their season total to a major league-high 67. Cabrera leads the team with 14. … … Indians RHPs Justin Masterson and Corey Kluber have been taking batting practice and running the bases to get ready for interleague series at Arizona that begins Tuesday. … Tigers LHP Patrick McCoy, called up from Triple-A Toledo following Saturdays game, made his major league debut and pitched a scoreless eighth. He replaced LHP Ian Krol, who has a sore shoulder, on the roster. … Detroit RHP Chad Smith also made his first major league appearance and allowed three runs in the ninth. . Niese pitched seven steady innings on a rainy Tuesday night and Daniel Murphy had three hits to lead New York to a 6-1 victory over the Phillies. . The Texas Rangers right-hander will probably reconsider now. Wolf pitched five strong innings for his first big league win in his first start in the majors, David Murphy and Adrian Beltre homered in a three-run first inning, and the Rangers avoided a sweep with a 3-1 victory against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. http://www.billsstoreonline.com/Black-55-Jerry. — Reginas Mark McMorris is taking home a silver medal and a fractured rib from Saturdays slopestyle event at the Winter X Games. Kyrie Irving scored 22 points and the Cavaliers won their sixth straight game, 101-93 over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. . There is considerable interest from fans around the league as well, with all eight teams vulnerable to poaching. Perhaps his best option at landing his first choice at QB, the expansion draft also poses problems for general manager Marcel Desjardins.RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — FIFA will not take action against the Colombia player who injured Neymar and ended the Brazil stars World Cup. FIFA said its disciplinary panel “cannot consider this matter” under the rules because the match referee saw the challenge by Camilo Zuniga and judged it at the time. “In this specific case, no retrospective action can be taken,” FIFA said in a statement on Monday, because the incident “did not escape the match officials attention.” In a separate decision, the panel also refused to consider a Confederation of Brazilian Football appeal against captain Thiago Silvas yellow card in the 2-1 win quarterfinals over Colombia on Friday in Fortaleza. Thiago Silvas second caution of the tournament triggered a one-match ban which he will serve in the semifinals. Brazil will therefore be without its best player and its captain against Germany on Tuesday in Belo Horizonte. Neymar will be sidelined for about 45 days after sustaining a fractured third vertebra. The panel studied video of Zunigas 86th-minute challenge, where he kneed Neymar in the back when jumping into him at speed. Zuniga apologized on Saturday. Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo did not show Zuniga a yellow card, and FIFAs disciplinary panel coonsidered the incident judged on the spot.dddddddddddd The seriousness of an injury could not be weighed in a disciplinary decision, nor was mistaken identity a factor in the case, FIFA added. “First and foremost, the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee (Claudio Sulser) wishes to state that he deeply regrets the incident and the serious consequences on Neymars health,” the statement said. The Luis Suarez biting case earlier in the World Cup raised expectations that Sulsers panel would also punish Zuniga. However, Suarezs bite of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellinis shoulder was missed by match officials. That allowed Sulser to use video evidence to ban the Uruguay forward for nine international matches and four months. The Mexican referee in that case, Marco Rodriguez, will handle the Brazil-Germany semifinal in his first match duty since Uruguay beat Italy 1-0 on June 24. Thiago Silva was booked against Colombia for impeding goalkeeper David Ospina who tried to kick the ball downfield. The FIFA disciplinary code states that cautions can be cancelled only in “exceptional circumstances.” The panel “cannot consider the matter given the fact that there is no legal basis entitling it to grant such request,” FIFA said. (SportsNetwork.com) – The Ottawa Senators will try to record consecutive wins for the first time since early February when they welcome the sliding Nashville Predators for tonights clash at Canadian Tire Centre. Watch the Senators vs. Predators live on TSN starting at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. The Senators ended a two-game slide by capping a four-game road trip with Saturdays 5-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets. It was only the second win in the last six games for Ottawa, which last posted consecutive victories when it beat St. Louis and Buffalo on Feb. 4 and 6, respectively. Ottawa has made the playoffs in each of the past two seasons and is trying desperately to get into the Eastern Conference postseason picture for 2014. The Sens are currently four points out of a playoff spot in the East. Eric Gryba, Kyle Turris and Mike Hoffman tallied in the second period for Ottawa, which was able to hold on for Saturdays win despite a ferocious attack by the Jets over the closing 20 minutes. Milan Michalek added a goal and two assists for the Senators, who managed a split of their four-game Canadian road swing after dropping the previous two. Ales Hemsky picked up three helpers and Jared Cowen also tallied to back a 46- save effort from Craig Anderson. The Senators goaltender stopped all 22 shots he faced in the third period when the Jets outshot Ottawa by a 22-7 margin. “No lead is safe until the game is over and that was the case tonight,” said Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean. “Our goaltender really held the fort for us there at the end.” The Senators are playing four of their next five games at home, but the club is just 13-12-5 in Canadas capital city this season. Ottawa has won three straight over the Predators and has won four of the last five meetings in this series. Nashville also has dropped four of its past six road games in this matchup and the club enters Monday with an 11-12-6 away record this season. Nashville recently went 1-5-0 on a six-game homestand and lost the final four tests of that residency. The Predators have scored a total of three goals during the current four-game slide and they were shut out 1-0 by Columbus on Saturday. The Predators fired 28 shots at Sergei Bobrovsky on Saturday, but the Blue Jackets netminder turned aside every one. Artem Anisimov tallied the games lone goal with 6:25 left in the third period. Anisimov entered the neutral zone on the rush and dropped a pass back to James Wisniewski. The defenseman quickly pushed the puck back up to Anisimov, who rushed in on net with a power move and backhanded a shot past Nashville netminder Pekka Rinne. Rinne turned aside 35 shots, but received no offensive support as the Predators lost for the seventh time in their last eight contests. “We played strong as a team, we never quit,” said Rinne. “Its a good sign, but obviously right now the only thing we care about is getting points.” Nashville is kicking off a three-game road trip tonight and will play seven of its next eight tilts away from Music City. The Predators are 10 points out of a postseason spot in the West and could be headed for a second straight season out of the playoffs. Prior to last season, Nashville had made the postseason tournament in three straight and six of the previous seven years. Kingsbury, from Deux-Montagnes, Que., won gold with a score of 26.93, while Bilodeau, from Montreal, took silver with 26.54. Each day, TSN.ca provides the latest rumours, reports and speculation from around the NFL beat. Missing Time San Francisco 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree will miss one to two weeks with an injury , coach Jim Harbaugh announced on Friday. Harbaugh refused to detail the injury, but said it was not related to the Achilles injury that sidelined Crabtree until Week 13 of last season. Of the inury, Harbaugh simply stated Crabtree was “working through something.” In five regular season games last season, Crabtree caught 19 passes for 284 yards and one touchdown. He caught 15 passes for 203 yards in three playoff games. The news comes just two days after quarterback Colin Kaepernick told the media that Crabtree was a “a step or two quicker” than last year. The 49ers lost running back Kendall Hunter for the season already with a training camp injury and will be without running back LaMichael James for roughly month after he suffered a dislocated elbow. Great Expectations According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Green Bay Packers are counting on 2013 first-round Datone Jones to start at defensive end this season. Jones, selected 26th overall, is coming off a disappointing and injury-plagued rookie season with the Packers. The UCLA product managed just 10 tackles, however showed strong moments as he managed 3.5 sacks. The Packers base defensive will likely consist of Jones and Mike Daniels at the defensive end positions with B.J. Raji at nose tackle. Time for Teddy? Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune “wouldnt be surprised” if Teddy Bridgewater opens the season as the Minnesota Vikings starting quarterback. According to Scogginns, the coaching staff sounds willing to let Bridgewater start if he beats out Matt Cassel for the job in the preseason.dddddddddddd The Vikings traded back into the first round of this years NFL Draft to select Bridgewater with the 32nd overall pick. Cassel threw for 1,807 yards last season with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 9 games (six starts) with the Vikings last season. Former first-round draft pick Christian Ponder is the third quarterback in camp with the Vikings, though he appears to be ruled out of starting competition. Still Out New Orleans Saints wide receiver Kenny Stills has not practiced since suffering a quad injury on July 25. Coming off an impressive rookie season in which he posted 641 yards and five touchdowns, Stills is fighting for a starting position in the Saints offence. In his absence, first-round pick and Brandin Cooks and third-year receiver Nick Toon are enjoying added snaps. Head coach Sean Payton told reporters on Thursday that Toon is having a “fantastic camp.” Long Return St. Louis Rams left tackle Jake Long took part in team drills in practice on Thursday. Long is making his way back from tearing both his MCL and ACL in Week 15 of last season, in his first year with the Rams. Long signed a four-year, $34 million contract with the Rams prior to 2013 season. He was drafted first-overall by the Miami Dolphins in the 2008 NFL Draft. Bolstering the Line The Arizona Cardinals signed tackle Max Starks on Friday, adding depth to their offensive group. Starks appeared in two games with the St. Louis Rams last season. The 32-year-old, who stands at 6-8, 345 pounds, was selected in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Starks spent nine seasons with the Steelers before signing with the Rams prior to the 2013 season. TORONTO – Sunday afternoons track meet with the fleet-footed Suns left the Raptors in a daze, but one player was feeling it more than the others. With just over 90 seconds remaining, down by nine in a game Toronto would go on to lose 121-113, Kyle Lowry – the Raptors most irreplaceable player – clutched his head, as he remained sprawled out on the court across from the teams bench. Scrambling for a loose ball moments earlier, Lowry took two inadvertent knees to the head from Suns 235-pound forward P.J. Tucker. Assisted by his teammates and the medical staff, the Raptors point guard walked gingerly to the bench where he was examined briefly during the timeout but would ultimately stay in the game. “Hes fine,” Dwane Casey said after the game, but Lowrys assessment was a little less comforting. “I got kneed in the head, bad,” he told reporters. “Ive got a headache right now. These (television) lights are killing me right now. But Im alright, though.” Has he suffered a concussion before? Was he concerned that he may have suffered one that afternoon? Lowry balked at those questions. “No, Im tough,” he said with a laugh, as if that could shield him from possible head injury. For those familiar with Lowry, one thing was for certain. He was not coming out of that game voluntarily. Sure enough, he shook it off and played the final 1:36, badly missing his next shot, a three coming out of the timeout. After a slow start, Lowry scored all but two of his team-high 28 points during the Raptors second half push. Ultimately he and his club could not overcome Phoenixs dynamic backcourt and devastating team speed. “Their speed and quickness was the biggest factor,” Casey said after his team surrendered 121 points, most since they lost a Jan. 25 shootout to the Clippers. “Speed does that,” he continued. “Speed kills. Thats the whole bottom line. We wont see a faster team than that the rest of the year. It caused a lot of breakdowns.” With the tandem of Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe setting the tone for Phoenix, the Raptors were forced out of their comfort zone, playing at a tempo that suited the Suns high-octane attack. “Thats their type of game,” Lowry admitted. “We dont want to have no type of game like that. We want to hold teams under 100, under 90, preferably.” The Raptors, who had not lost a game by more than five points in over a month, were holding their previous nine opponents at home to 91.3 in regulation. For the first time over that stretch, they seemed to let their own frustration get the better of them. Usually a calm, cool and collected bunch, the Raptors got caught up arguing with the officials during a third quarter in which the Suns shot 23 free throws, including 10 from Bledsoe alone. The afternoon mercifully came to an end with reserve forward Steve Novak confronting a teammate on Torontos bench as Jonas Valanciunas played peacemaker and held him back. Novak would not say he was shouting at, or why and insisted, its a non-issue. Despite a bit of understandable post-game tension in the teams locker room, there was an underlying feeling of calmness, stemming from their unflappable head coach. “Its not a systemic problem,” Casey insisted. “Its not a situation where (we should) panic. Its one game. We knew we werent going to go undefeated the rest of the way. That team right there, theyre fighting for their playoff lives like we are.” Of course, that wasnt the case back in December when Toronto last visited the Suns. In the midst of a Western road trip, the Raptors dropped their fifth straight and fell six games below the .500 mark for the only time this season. It was an undeniable low point for the squad before their fortunes turned two days later, as Rudy Gay was traded. Even after Sundays loss, they are 31-16 since that game in Phoenix. In a couple losses to the Suns – the Western Conferences feel-good story – this season, the Raptors have been out-rebounded by 36, grabbing a season-low 26 on Sunday, allowing a total of 227 points. Missing Patterson Without Patrick Patterson, missing his fourth straight game with an elbow ligament sprain, the Raptors undermanned second unit was thoroughly outplayed Sunday. The Suns finished with a 59-11 advantage in bench scoring, led by the 28 points of Gerald Green – a starter until Bledsoe returned from injury – and the Morris twins, who Patterson likely would have guarded. “Once Patrick gets back we have offence coming off the bench, which is huge, everybody kind of gets back in their place,” said Casey, who wasnt concerned about long-term ramifications of the benchs underwhelming performance. “Again, no time to panic. Weve showed that weve played against quality teams without Pat. Weve got to continue to do that.” Patterson will be re-evaluated Monday and the team hopes to have him back in the lineup sometime this coming week. Johnson climbs franchise block list With his swat on Tucker midway through the first quarter, Amir Johnson passed Antonio Davis for third on the Raptors all-time block list. Johnson, who leads Toronto with 73 blocked shots this season, has recorded 406 since being acquired by the Raptors ahead of the 2009-10 campaign. He is now 9 blocks away from tying Vince Carter for second-most in franchise history. Chris Bosh is the Raptors all-time leader with 600. The Stat DeMar DeRozan, who scored 17, has been held under 20 points in consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 20-23. The Raptors all-star guard tallied 16 points on Friday in a challenging matchup against the Grizzlies Tayshaun Prince and Tony Allen before facing Tucker and the Suns Sunday. The Quote “Its just tough when you go out there playing hard and sometimes we dont get a call that were fighting or dying for, that we may need at a critical time,” said DeRozan, who was whistled for a technical, along with Casey, after voicing his disapproval of a no-call on a drive to the basket in the third quarter. “Its definitely tough but its something we can learn from.” . The Heat are one win away from becoming the fourth team in NBA history to reach four consecutive finals appearances and all that stands between them and the record books is the pesky Indiana Pacers. Watch the game live on TSN and TSN GO at 8:30pm et/5:30pm pt. The two teams rekindle the Eastern Conference Finals Friday night at AmericanAirlines Arena. The Boston Celtics made a whopping 10 in a row from 1957-66, then the Los Angeles Lakers turned the trick from 1982-85. The Cs did it once again, battling those same Lakers a few times, from 1984-87. Miami lost the championship in 2011, then won back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013. The Heat are a perfect 7-0 in South Beach this postseason and had a chance Wednesday to advance and get plenty of rest before the NBA Finals begin Thursday. The Pacers werent ready to call it a season. Indiana staved off elimination with a 93-90 Game 5 victory at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in one of the most entertaining playoff games in recent memory. All it took was a Herculean effort from Paul George, a foul-plagued LeBron James and crazy antics from Lance Stephenson, which included, but was not limited to, pinching and blowing in James ear. George was magnificent as he scored 31 of his 37 points after the break, including 21 in the fourth quarter. “I just came out firing. My teammates found me and I got hot,” said George, who shot 15-of-28 from the floor. “I felt in rhythm, regardless of who was guarding me. I was just in the zone.” The Heat essentially played the entire second and third quarters without James, who battled foul trouble throughout and finished with a career playoff low seven points on 2-of-10 shooting. “Its not something Im accustomed to,” James said of sitting with foul trouble. “I wasnt able to make plays and help our team win.” Then, there was Stephenson. The wild-card played a pivotal role in Indianas Game 5 success, despite the silly instance where he blew in James ear, or when he pinched James side, or even when he listened in on a small huddle between Heat coach Erik Spoelsttra and two of his players.dddddddddddd “Just trying to help my team win, whatever it takes. Theres a lot on the line now. Just trying to win games,” Stephenson explained. Lost in the bizarre nature of his ways, Stephenson proved to be a huge catalyst in the Pacers comeback. Indiana trailed by nine at the half, then ratcheted up the defensive intensity over the final 24 minutes. Stephenson picked up full court and George manned the passing lanes. They forced turnovers and George finished with six steals. The defensive pressure created easy shots for the Pacers, who scored 31 in the third quarter after posting only 33 in the first half. A George slam off a steal pushed Indianas lead to 77-66 early in the final stanza, but nine consecutive Miami points in less than two minutes brought the Heat right back. Miami never got over the hump — thanks to George countering nearly every Heat basket with one of his own — but the visitors closed within 91-90 following Rashard Lewis sixth 3-pointer with 16 seconds to go. The Pacers went 1-for-3 from the foul line over the closing seconds and the Heat had a chance for the tie or the lead. James knifed through the lane, encountered Indiana center Roy Hibbert, kicked it out to an open Chris Bosh in the corner. Bosh missed and the Pacers live to see another day. “Weve been able to win a road game in each playoff series weve been involved in the last two years, and we have a confidence that this series will be the same, that we can go into Game 6 and be able to get a W.” Pacers coach Frank Vogel said after practice Thursday. The world will likely see a different Heat team on Friday, one with James making an impact and not in warmups. “Hes going to come out and play with a lot of energy. Im sure hes got a lot built up from not playing much in Game 5,” said George. And despite James foul woes, the Heat had a good look at a shot to win the game. But, the Heat werent interested in how close it was without the best player in the world. “Aint no moral victories for us. We win or we lose. Thats it,” said James. If the Pacers survive, Game 7 would be Sunday in Indianapolis. cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Blaine Gabbert is back on the bench with another injury. Jacksonville Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said Monday he expects Gabbert to miss Sundays game at Denver because of a strained hamstring. The injury knocked Gabbert out of Sundays 34-20 loss at St. Louis. Bradley also reiterated that hes planning to stick with Gabbert, the 10th overall pick in the 2011 draft, as the starter when hes healthy again. “Right now, thats what I think,” Bradley said. “There are some crazy things that can happen, I guess. … Well see how Blaine does this week with his injury. I know its very important for him to get back, and hes going to do everything he can to get back.” Chad Henne will make his third start of the season. Henne has completed 56 per cent of his passes for 601 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He has been sacked eight times. Gabbert has been considerably worse. He has completed 49 per cent of his passes for 481 yards, with a TD and seven INTs. Three of his picks have been returned for touchdowns — one in every start. Gabbert also has been sacked 12 times. Equally troubling for the Jaguars (0-5) is that Gabbert cant seem to stay healthy. He has failed to finish six of his last 10 starts, including the preseason. Hes had a shoulder injury, a forearm injury, a broken thumb, a sliced-open hand and now a strained hamstring. He also missed time with a sprained ankle in training camp. “That is something that we have to take a look at, not only within our training and strength and conditioning, but also Blaine,” Bradley said. "These things have surfaced up. And its so important to be able to trust that hes going to stay healthy. And for whatever reason, these things have happened. I know his workouts and hes training and hes doing these things. But we have to take a look at that. “We have to take a look at it and see why. We have to really study it. But I cant argue the fact that some things have popped up for him.” The Jaguars had planned to give Gabbert every chance to prove he can be the franchises starter. They pointed to potential reasons why he struggled as a rookie and showed little progress last season. But Gabberts durability questions and his inability to move the ball with any consistency have most outsiders questioning his viability as an NFL quarterback. “I think at times maybe the quarterback is held separately than the rest of the team, and for us and my mindset, its not,” Bradley said. “If the receiver makes a mistake out there in a critical situation, then hes held accountable. If its the quarterback, then so be it, the quarterback as well. (On Sunday), there were times it was the quarterback.” The Jaguars have lost every game by double digits. They looked to have a shot at breaking a nine-game losing streak Sunday until Gabbert badly overthrew a pass to Justin Blackmon. It was picked off and returned 82 yards for a score. “I feel strongly about Blaine, but there were missed opportunities by Blaine this week and hes got to step up in the pocket, hes got to stay strong, hes got to play with confidence and make those passes that he does in practice,” Bradley said. “And thats the next step for him. Were always competing.” In other injury news, tight end Marcedes Lewis (calf) will miss another game. Fellow tight end Allen Reisner will be out at least six weeks with a sprained knee ligament. Receiver Stephen Burton, safety Dwight Lowery and defensive end Jeremy Mincey all will try to pass concussion tests Tuesday. Receiver Mike Brown (back) and cornerback Dwayne Gratz (ankle) are expected to practice in a limited capacity this week. The Jaguars also were awarded receiver Stephen Williams off waivers from Seattle. The Austrian, who also won the Olympic super-G in Sochi, won the race despite finishing seventh in the first run. Her combined time of 2 minutes, 26.39 seconds was 0.21 faster than surprise runner-up Anemone Marmottan of France. Lara Gut of Switzerland and Eva-Maria Brem of Austria tied for third, trailing Fenninger by 0.39. Hoefl-Riesch placed 21st in what is typically her weakest discipline and earned only 10 World Cup race points. Fenningers 100 points brought her within 67 of the 2011 overall champion from Germany with six races remaining this season. Congratulating Fenninger in a post on her Twitter account, Hoefl-Riesch wrote: “Now you are the favourite for the big crystal globe.” In her past four races, Fenninger has collected two Olympics medals, finished second in a World Cup downhill and now taken her sixth career World Cup win. The 24-year-old Austrians second GS victory this season lifted her to secondd behind Jessica Lindell-Vikarby of Sweden in the season-long discipline standings.dddddddddddd. Lindell-Vikarby placed sixth in front of her home crowd, 0.82 behind, and has a 54-point lead over Fenninger. Are hosts another giant slalom on Friday, after Thursdays race was a replacement for one cancelled last month in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. Tina Maze of Slovenia, the Olympic champion in GS, held a clear first-leg lead Thursday but had a strangely cautious second run to fall to fifth place. Marmottan and Brem both recorded their first career podium finishes in the World Cup. Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States placed 15th, 2.16 behind Fenninger. The Olympic champion in slalom will get a chance to race her favourite event on Saturday. The season concludes next week with the World Cup finals races in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, where weather has been a major factor. Hoefl-Riesch clinched her 2011 title by only three points from Lindsey Vonn when the final GS race was cancelled, and last year none of the mens and womens downhill and super-G races were completed. SAN DIEGO - Less than five months after having back surgery, Wimbledon champion Andy Murray propelled Britain into the next round of the Davis Cup and earned some time off. – Alex Gordon went from a bust to busting the bank. Matt Dominguez hit a two-run homer and a tiebreaking RBI double, and the Astros tied their season high with 17 hits as they prevented a three-game sweep. Second baseman Jose Altuve made a pair of errors and first baseman Jon Singleton had one, with each infielder allowing a grounder through his legs. “Its part of the game,” manager Bo Porter said. “Obviously, Altuve is a guy whos pretty sure-handed, but it happens. But its good to see the rest of the team pick those guys up.” Altuve hit a two-run homer for the Astros (41-58), who find themselves 1 1-2 games ahead of last-place Texas in the AL West. “We battled through that game,” said Dominguez, had three hits and four RBIs. “It was nice to go out there and get a win like that.” Chicago fell behind 4-0 early and tied the score 7-all in the sixth on Alexei Ramirezs RBI double, Jose Abreus run-scoring single and a run-scoring two-out grounder by Dayan Viciedo that went Altuves legs for Houstons second error of the inning. Daniel Webb (5-3) allowed RBI doubles in the seventh to Dominguez and L.J. Hoes, and Marwin Gonzalez followed with a two-run single. Tony Sipp (2-1) pitched 1-1 scoreless innings as Houston stopped a three-game skid. Josh Fields and Chad Qualls got three straight outs each. Houstons Jarred Cosart allowed four runs, seven hits and four walks in five innings. John Danks lasted a season-low 4 1-3 innings, giving up a season-high 12 hits and seven runs. On May 18, he allowed eight runs — seven earned — and 10 hits over 4 2-3 innings in an 8-2 loss to the Astros.dddddddddddd “Dug us a hole. These guys fought hard to get out of it,” Danks said. “For whatever reason, Houston has beat me up this year, so fortunately, were done with that.” Hoes filled in for Astros OF George Springer, who was held out because of soreness in his right knee and quadriceps. Springer will continue to receive treatment, and he expects be in the lineup for the opener of a three-game set against the Athletics in Oakland on Tuesday night. “Its fine,” Stringer said. “Its just a little something. I just have to make sure Im all right, and well go from there. I can play through it.” NOTES: Singleton was inserted in the lineup after 1B Jesus Guzman reported back discomfort in batting practice. … Abreu extended his hitting streak to 11 games. He had at least one hit in 29 of his last 30 games. … Manager Robin Ventura was noncommittal about the closer role, which Jake Petricka and Zach Putnam shared in recent weeks. Matt Lindstrom (left ankle surgery) could return next month, while Thompson also was a potential candidate. Prior to the game, Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte, where he converted all six of his save chances. RHP Felipe Paulino was transferred to the 60-day DL. … Ventura had a rooting interest in the upcoming Hall of Fame induction of Frank Thomas, his former teammate. “He was a dominant player in his era, and that will stand the test of time as far as his place with the White Sox,” Ventura said. … White Sox LHP Chris Sale is to make his first post-All-Star game start versus the Kansas City Royals on Monday night. (SportsNetwork.com) – The Pittsburgh Penguins will try to complete a sweep of the Washington Capitals when the clubs cap a quick home-and-home series Tuesday night in the Steel City. Catch the action live on TSN2 at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. Pittsburgh visited the Capitals on Monday and Chris Kunitz potted a pair of goals, including the go-ahead marker in the second period, to help the Penguins continue their recent dominance of Washington with a 3-2 victory at Verizon Center. Sidney Crosby assisted on both of Kunitzs scores and tallied one of his own in Pittsburghs seventh consecutive win over the Capitals, while Jeff Zatkoff outperformed counterpart Jaroslav Halak with a 31-save performance between the pipes. “At the end of it, the goalie has to make the big save and we had that all night,” said Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi of Zatkoff. Halak, making his second start for Washington since being acquired from Buffalo at last weeks trade deadline, stopped just 17-of-20 shots. Eric Fehr and Nicklas Backstrom accounted for Washingtons goals in the loss, the Capitals fourth in five games. “I think we have to look at the positives,” Fehr said after Mondays game. “We had some time where we outplayed them and we have to try to do that again tomorrow.” Pittsburgh pushed its lead atop the Metropolitan Division to 16 points over the New York Rangers. The Capitals, meanwhile, enter Tuesday one point behind both Columbus and Detroit for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Blue Jackets and Red Wings are facing each other tonight in Columbus. Washington twice rallied from one-goal deficits to knot the score at 2-2 midway through the second period on Monday, but Kunitz struck for the second time of the night with 7:20 left in the middle session to put the Penguins in front to stay. The goal came on a rush up the ice led by Crosby, who dropped the puck back to Lee Stempniak for a shot that Halak kicked away. Kunitz raced in down the left side while uncovered, however, to deposit the rebound into an opening. Zatkoff made the lead stand with a seven-save third period. Washington had an opportunity to tie after the Penguins were called for too many men on the ice with 2:17 left, but never got a shot on goal during the advantage. “I thought we did a good job just sitting back and not giving them passing lanes and making them shoot themselves,” said Scuderi. “Its way easier for the defense and goalie if you can just keep the puck on one half of the ice and not have to be going side-to-side. I guess I thought everyone did a good job with that.” The Pens own a stellar 23-4-2 record on home ice this season, but have lost two straight at CONSOL Energy Center. Washington has lost two straight on the road and is just 12-15-5 as the away team in 2013-14. . TORONTO — A half-time message woke up the Raptors on a night when Toronto found itself sleepwalking against the struggling Detroit Pistons. “We pretty much said, This is a must-win game,” Amir Johnson said after Toronto trailed Detroit by four at the break but finished with a 112-91 win Wednesday. “We had to go out and take it. We did that.” After Johnson and DeMar DeRozan started the game cold, their teammates kept things close and allowed a second-half turnaround to take place. Jonas Valanciunas had 16 points and 11 rebounds while Kyle Lowry scored 21 points and added nine assists in a game the Raptors needed to work themselves into. “The first half was a little sluggish but we picked it up and thats most important,” said Lowry. “Thats a team. You need everybody, all 15 guys and all 13 that are dressed to step up and take advantage when the opportunity comes.” Toronto (17-17) needed strong performances from Valanciunas and Lowry. DeRozan and Johnson combined to shoot 0 for 16 from the floor in the first half with the team making just 33 per cent of their field goals compared to 47 per cent shooting from the Pistons. Brandon Jennings led the way for Detroit (14-22), scoring 22 points to go with nine assists in the loss. Andre Drummond added 16 rebounds as the Pistons lost their sixth straight. After going up 11 midway through the second quarter, the Raptors went more than five minutes without a field goal and allowed Detroit to go on a 14-0 run to take a 54-50 lead at the half. “We started off terrible,” DeRozan said. “We didnt have any legs and we told ourselves that we can have no excuses. We had to pick it up because that wasnt us in the first half.” Things flipped in the third quarter when the Raptors outscored Detroit 34-20 while making 11 of their 22 field-goal attempts. DeRozan and Johnson were able to shake off their starts to help Toronto build a 10-point advantage going into the fourth. “There was a big difference,” Toronto head coach Dwane Casey said of the two halves. "We knew it was going to be a grind out game and thats ssomething we are learning to do, to grind things out possession by possession, quarter by quarter.dddddddddddd “We knew DeMar and Amir werent going to go zero-for, in the second half. The defensive intensity (after halftime) is what changed the game.” The final quarter resembled the third as Toronto outplayed the Pistons and broke the game open with five minutes remaining and the lead up to 18. All five of Torontos starters finished the game in double figures after the team dropped its last two contests against the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers. DeRozan finished the game shooting just 3 for 15 from the floor, but connected on 13 of his 16 free-throw attempts to finish the game with 19 points. The 16 free throws tied a career-high. “He went to plan B and thats what hes got to do,” Casey said about DeRozans night. “About a year or two ago he wouldnt have done that. He did a good job of attacking the feet and taking what the defence gave him.” Johnson finished the game with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Terrance Ross scored 17 points. “Hes improving as a basketball player,” Lowry said of Rosss evolving game. “Catching and shooting, his confidence is unbelievable. Hes showing his versatility. He can play defence. Hes scoring, but if you look at the defensive assignments hes had in the past few weeks, hes done a great job at it … I know I tip my hat to him.” Lowrys explanation for the strides Ross has taken was simple — hes playing more. “Thats how you get better,” he said. “Once you get more minutes, more repetition, thats how you get better.” Toronto finished the game shooting 41 per cent from the floor as compared to 40 per cent for the Pistons, but the Raptors shot 91 per cent from the free-throw line, making 31 of their 34 attempts. Detroit made just 19-for-35 shots from the line. Notes: Torontos Tyler Hansbrough missed his fourth straight game with a left ankle sprain. … Rodney Stuckey returned to action for the Pistons after missing three games with a sore shoulder. … The Raptors return to the court Saturday at home to the Brooklyn Nets. CHICAGO — Chase Utley stuck it to the Cubs again. Its just what he does to teams when hes healthy and hitting. Utley went 3-for-3 and homered for the second day in a row, and Cliff Lee pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. “He looks good,” Sandberg said. “Hes feeling good, hes in great shape and hes producing quality at-bats right now. Hes very healthy and he looks good.” Dominic Brown drove in Utley for the Phillies other run with a single in the fourth inning. Lee (2-0) allowed 10 hits and had just one 1-2-3 inning. But it never felt as if he was in trouble. He worked on the edges of both sides of the plate and kept the Cubs hitters off balance. Four of his six strikeouts were called third strikes. “I still had to battle a little bit,” said Lee, who won his first start of the season despite allowing eight runs in five innings. "They got their fair share of hits, but I was able to make pitches when I needed to. “Seven innings, no runs, Ill take that every time.” The Cubs wasted another strong start from Jeff Samardzija (0-1), who allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings. He walked three and struck out eight. In his two starts, the right-hander has a 1.29 ERA with nothing to show for it, but said hes confident the offence will come around. “Absolutely,” he said. "I see these guys working every day; I know what theyre doing. If it were a different situation, if I thought these guys were being lazy or this or that, obviously itd be different. But these guys come to work every day, doing everything we can. “Its early in the season, were going to keep going, keep pushing and figure this out.” Utley ensured that Lee would take the mound with a lead when he cranked a 1-1 fastball from Samardzija into the right-field bleachers for a two-out solo home run in the top of the first inning. It was Utleys second homer of the season. Utley then led off the fourth with a walk, took second on a single by Ryan Howard and scored on a single by Brown to make it 2-0. Utley, who has been bothered by knee problems in recent years, showed how healthy hes feeling on the play. Browns hit was a liner to left-centre. Utley got a quick read on the ball and raced around third to score without a play. With Lee painting the corners, the two-run advantage seemed huge. The Cubs managed two hits in each the first, third and seventh innings, but couldnt produce a big hit break through – just like things have gone so far this season. NOTES: The Cubs confirmed that RHP Carlos Villanueva will make his scheduled start in Sundays series finale. Villanuevas status was in question because he used in relief twice during the opening series in Pittsburgh. He was losing pitcher in both, meaning hell take the mound for his first start with a 0-2 record and a 13.50 ERA. A.J. Burnett (0-0, 1.50) will start for the Phillies. The veteran RHP allowed one run in six innings in his first start of the season. . Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins was back in the lineup after missing the previous two games when he returned to Philadelphia for the birth of his second child, a daughter named Logan Aliya. . Utleys double in the eighth inning was the 300th of his career, which is eighth on the Phillies all-time list. wholesale nfl jerseys . COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Blue Jackets wanted their last home game in a month to be memorable. Linemates Ryan Johansen and Boone Jenner each had a goal and an assist in the first period, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 36 saves to lead the Blue Jackets past the Florida Panthers 4-1 on Saturday night. It was Columbus final home game until March 1, due to four road games and the NHL Olympic hiatus. “We definitely wanted to leave Columbus on a good note,” Johansen said of the impending West Coast road trip that will lead into the break. “Now were heading out with three really tough games. We wanted to finish this off well, and obviously we did.” After Brad Boyes cut Floridas deficit to 2-1 early in the second period, Nick Foligno and Mark Letestu scored for the Blue Jackets. Nathan Horton had two assists in the opening 20 minutes. In their last 13 games, the Blue Jackets won eight in a row, lost three straight and now have won the past two. Down 3-1 going into the third, the Panthers dominated the pace but Bobrovsky made several big stops to maintain the two-goal lead. He improved to 11-2 in his last 13 starts. “Our goalie was very good,” coach Todd Richards said. “We were a very opportunistic group.” The Blue Jackets considered it a must-win game, because they started the day in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division, one point out of third place and one point out of a wild-card spot. In a crisp first period, the Blue Jackets line of Johansen, Jenner and Horton — ages 21, 20 and 28, respectively - played particularly well. After getting a pass from Horton, Johansen carried the puck from the right wing and waited patiently for an opening with Jenner on his wing. As Johansen ran out of room, he wristed a shot that goalie Tim Thomas stopped. But as Thomas, lying on his stomach, tried to gather the puck, he flicked it with his stick under his glove. Jenner crashed the net and jammed the puck into an empty net at 15:33 for his ninth goal. “I blocked it, and then I went to pull it back with my stick, and my glove was caught on the lip of the net,” said Thomas, who had 26 saves as the Panthers lost their third in a row. “Thats bad luck. We cant afford that. The team needs me to keep us as close as possible. Were a little bit of a fragile team right now. That was terrible.” Just 2 1/2 minutes later, Jenner ended up with the puck off a pass from Horton and skated parallel to the goal line to the left wing. Jenner threw a blind, behind-the-back pass to the crease where Johansen was alone for his 22nd. “Boone works so hard and creates so many turnovers,” said Horton, a big off-season free-agent signing from Boston who played six years for the Panthers. “And Joey (Johansen), when he has the puck, good things happen.” Florida dominated the opening minutes of the second, outshooting the Blue Jackets 8-1. That pressure paid off when Boyes scored his 15th goal. The puck went in off the stick of Columbus defenceman David Savard. After Floridas Nick Bjugstad struck a post with a wrist shot that would have tied the game, the Blue Jackets pulled away. Foligno skated with the puck through the neutral zone, and from near the top of the right circle unloaded a snap shot that appeared to handcuff Thomas and trickled through his pads. He dived with his stick to try to prevent it from going over the line, but was too late. “They got a missed puck that bobbled through,” Florida coach Peter Horachek said. “Then they had two that were blindly kind of thrown behind themselves that went to people. Our chances were point blank but we didnt capitalize.” NOTES: Columbus LW Blake Comeau, still hurting from a sprained ligament in his left knee, was scratched for the second straight game. … It was the first meeting between the teams in almost two years. Columbus had won the last five matchups. … Florida will play two of its final three games at home before the Olympic break. … Savard returned after missing four games with an illness. … Columbus has won the last six meetings with the Panthers, dating to 2007, and is 9-4 in the series. Major League Soccer has come a long way since the inaugural SuperDraft back in 2000 and Darren Mattocks journey since leaving Bridgeport High School in Portmore, Jamaica has been on a similar upward trajectory as the league he recently joined. Signed as a Generation Adidas player in late December – shortly after Noon eastern today he will know the destination of the club he will play for. Perhaps he already knows. Mattocks certainly did know from a tender age he was ready for a day like this telling TSN990 on the eve of the draft, “I was probably 7 or 8 years old when I realized I was pretty talented at this. At the age of 12 was when I realized I had a pretty good eye for goal.” From there it was onto Bridgeport High School. “I nurtured my talent in high school and I also played for the Waterhouse football club and to see my talent develop I realized soccer was a good sport for me at that age. It has turned out wonderful.” The decision to continue his development at Akron University and leaving Portmore, a small town on the south coast 20 minutes or so outside the capital Kingston wasnt a difficult one. “I knew I was going there under Coach Caleb Porter, a fantastic coach who would help my career.” In two short seasons at Akron, Mattocks certainly put good use to his pretty good eye for goal. Notching 39 goals in a mere 47 appearances and winning a national championship in 2010. Mattocks spoke very fondly of his time in Ohio. “To play for Akron its one of the most prestigious colleges in America in terms of soccer. I think Coach Porter has done a wonderful job over his six seasons. To cap it all off last year he sent five guys to the first round of the MLS draft. For me to have been in an environment such as Akron was really amazing.” If the Whitecaps hadnt drafted Selgado first last year the Zips would have owned the 2011 SuperDraft Podium. After his standout freshman year the considered opinion was he would skip out of school. Mattocks had other ideas. “I got a chance to leave school early last season but I turned it down because I felt I wasnt ready to go to the next level. So I stayed in school one more year.” Good decision from the marketing major. In that second season when over half the starters from the 2010 championship team had departed for MLS pastures Mattocks tallied a quite remarkable 21 goals in 22 games. Like all promising athletes in all the various sports and disciplines across the globe as a kid they each share something in common. An idol. Mattocks was emphatic in who he idolizes – Steven Gerrard, “I think hes a wonderful role model, a fantastic captain playing all his career with the one club.” A motivational idol at that. “Steven Gerrard is my biggest motivation out on the pitch.” He didnt hesitate when discussing whom he most modeled his style of football on, “Fernando Torres.” Not bad to mirror yourself on a chap who scored the winner at EURO2008 and laid on the extra time winner at the 2010 World Cup. If youve ever seen film of Mattocks theres an uncanny resemblance. We are of course still speaking about Liverpool players here. Alongside Mattocks rapier-like burst of speed, ability to score from all angles – from near and far he also possesses that natural goal predatory threat. That innate instinct not many possess and often through an entire career can be the difference maker between the very good and the truly great. “However they come I just want to take them.” Leading up to todays SuperDraft and as always occurs the best college players alongside a number of International recruits gather for the Combine – the pathway to the MLS. Mattocks didnt find the back of the net as often as many would have expected or perhaps he would have liked. Torres in a Chelsea shirt anyone? Mattocks did though get opportunity to showcase his considerable skill set in front of each and every head coach in the league. Many of which would likely have taken a trip or two down to Akron last fall. “It was pretty amazing to see all the coaches turn out. I mean, looking at me hopefully as the Number 1 overall and to play against all the best players in college was really exciting, a lot of fun. It was amazing and has shown people how far the league has come.” Harking back to that decision to stay in school, one that certainly sets a perfect example for all the other promising kids back home in Partmore and across Jamaica not only did Caleb Porter hone and refine the marksmens lethal skill set Porters immense guidance has better prepared him psychologically too. Or as Mattocks put it, “Not only physically, but mentally also.” Mattocks saves his highest praise for those he cherishes most dearly. "My parents, my mum, my brothers have been supportive of me all the way since I was younger and playing soccer. Theyve given me 100 per cent support where ever Ive gone. From the Bridgeport High School, Waterhouse Football Club, to the University of Akron and now playing for MLS theyve supported me 100 per cent. Its really unfortunate they wont be able to make it but thats how it goes sometimes. He was expecting to be reunited in Kansas with his mother so she could so proudly be by his side when his name is called this afternoon. But in a most unfortunate twist of fate she was prevented from boarding her plane back home in Kingston. “Currently my mother was supposed to come to the draft but unfortunately with some visa issues back in Jamaica she wont be able to make it.” The 21-year-old Jamaican has no doubt that whichever club rises to the podium and says, “From Akron University…” with boots in hand and that eye for goal hes more than ready to hit the back of the MLS net. “Im ready to contribute on the pitch straight away. Im going to do my best.” Before that though comes those few final hours, that anxious wait. “Im pretty excited, I cant wait. Lets see what the day holds.” . The NFL has been investigating whether or not the Patriots used underinflated footballs in the AFC title game against Indianapolis. New England won the game 45-7 to earn a berth in this weeks Super Bowl against Seattle. According to FoxSports.com on Monday, the NFL has already interviewed the locker room attendant and is trying to determine if the individual has done anything wrong. Patriots coach Bill Belichick said during an impromptu news conference on Saturday that hes confident the Patriots did everything by the letter of the law. Belichick and New England quarterback Tom Brady both denied last week any knowledge of deflated balls being used during the Jan. 18 game, which was played in the rain at the Patriots home stadium. ESPN.com reported last week that the NFL found 11 of the 12 balls used by the Patriots were deflated. The league announced that its early findings suggest the Patriots used undeerinflated balls in the first half before they were replaced by properly inflated balls, which were used in the second half and retained their air pressure.dddddddddddd The ESPN.com report said the NFL found that 11 of the 12 balls used by the Patriots during the game were underinflated by two pounds of air pressure per square inch (PSI). NFL rules mandate game balls, which are inspected by the referee hours before kickoff, be inflated between 12 1/2 to 13 1/2 PSI. Underinflated balls are said to help a player better grip the ball in inclement weather. The league said Friday the investigation is being led jointly by NFL executive vice president Jeff Pash and Ted Wells of the law firm of Paul Weiss. Wells was the leagues investigator into last seasons bullying scandal involving the Miami Dolphins. If the NFL finds the Patriots deflated footballs intentionally, they could be subject to penalties similar to ones levied after the team was found to have videotaped defensive signals used by the New York Jets during a game in September 2007. Those penalties included a $500,000 fine for Belichick, a $250,000 fine for the team and the loss of a draft pick. TORONTO – Although no one cared to admit it, on either side, at the outset of the evening, Mondays divisional grudge match in Brooklyn meant more to the Raptors than the game that preceded it or the one to follow. The stakes were higher, the competition more fierce and the atmosphere was that of a playoff game – something the young, upstart Raptors have five weeks to better prepare themselves for or the result will be eerily similar. If they looked out of place in that environment, its probably because they were. Torontos starting five features a fifth-year star that has yet to make a playoff appearance. Theyre the only team currently in a playoff position that starts two sophomores and its been five years since either their point guard or power forward has experienced postseason basketball. Combined that lineup accounts for 24 games of postseason experience. Staring them down in the final minute of a one-possession, high stakes game was a Nets unit that has collectively participated in 268 playoff contests. Paul Pierce alone is responsible for 136 of them while Kevin Garnett and Andrei Kirilenko – both out with injuries – would have added another 176. The Nets took a five-point advantage into the fourth quarter and, for all their hardships this season, they had only lost one of 30 games in which they held the lead after 36 minutes. Thats the difference experience makes. The Raptors, despite a valiant effort, showed up to a knife fight armed with plastic forks. “This team here in Brooklyn is a championship-caliber team,” Dwane Casey said following his teams 101-97 loss. “They know the plays to make to win games. Weve still got to learn that. Were on our way but we still have some learning to do.” Although the Raptors remain the NBAs best fourth-quarter team, outscoring opponents by 158 points in the final frame this season, their late-game execution continues to be a work in progress. When ahead or behind by five points or less in the final three minutes, Toronto shoots 37 per cent, the ninth-lowest mark in the league. Theyre 15-18 in games that come down to that scenario. On Monday, Pierce hit what may have been the biggest shot of the night – a cold-blooded three to break a tie with just over a minute left and the shot clock ticking down – while the Raptors wilted in the moment. Down one, 30 seconds later, Toronto got the stop it needed, leading to a five-on-four break the other way. In the midst of a brilliant second half, Kyle Lowry found DeMar DeRozan in transition, believing he would continue to go hard to the bucket. Met by Pierce in the lane, DeRozan lateraled back to Lowry, who wasnt expecting the pass and turned down the shot. John Salmons, receiving the ball from Lowry, also hesitated on an open look from the elbow, which ultimately led to Terrence Ross fumbling the ball as he looked to salvage the broken play. It was a possession mired in indecision and it sealed Torontos fate. The Nets – 10-for-14 from three-point range after the first quarter – hit big shots and made winning plays. They looked like the desperate team, and rightfully so. Had they won, the Raptors would be sitting pretty in the Atlantic Division, five games up on Brooklyn with the season-series tiebreaker in hand. Instead, Brooklyn has pulled within three games of the division lead. “[The atmosphere] was definitely a notch higher because of what was at stake,” DeRozan admitted after the game. “Theyre chasing us and were leading in the division. It was just a big game overall. Theyve been playing well, trying to make a playoff push and were trying to sustain our position so it definitely was a big game.” While the loss stings, the Raptors are still in the drivers seat, controlling their own destiny with 20 games to go. “It was a disappointing loss in the fact that theyre a team thats battling us for the division,” Casey said. “Theres still a lot of basketball left to play. Weve got to stay positive. Its not the end of the world. We werent going to go undefeated the rest of the way. We knew that.” Should Toronto and Brooklyn share the same record atop the Atlantic when its all said and done, with the season series now even, the tiebreaker would go to the team with the most wins within the division. The Raptors are currently 8-3 with five games left to be played against Atlantic opponents while the Nets are 7-5 with four remaining. Each of those games could be crucial – including two meetings with New York in the final week of the season – for the Raptors who are hoping to win their second division title in franchise history. Sink or swim, that will be determined by what theyre able to take out of Mondays squandered opportunity. “Its a learning experience,” DeRozan said. “It was a heck of a game that we can learn from and possibly could be a team we could see in the playoffs.” wholesale jerseys . Darvish is scheduled to make his season debut Sunday at Tampa Bay after getting through an extended bullpen session without any issues. PALM BEACH, Fla. — In this unpredictable, headline-grabbing off-season, not even hot topics such as overtime or instant replay can push aside the New Orleans Saints and their bounty program. NFL owners completed their meetings Wednesday by passing several significant rules changes, including expanding the post-season OT rules to the regular season and having all turnovers reviewed by the replay official, just as all scoring plays currently are. Yet the spotlight all week was on the Saints, who are talking to Bill Parcells about becoming interim coach while Sean Payton is suspended for the 2012 season. Other NFL coaches offered their take on Commissioner Roger Goodells hefty punishments for Payton and former defensive co-ordinator Gregg Williams, who was suspended indefinitely for overseeing the bounty pool that offered payouts for damaging hits to targeted opponents. Most coaches said they found it important to discuss. And not only with the media, but with their teams. “The whole league will talk about it,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Wednesday. “The commissioner wants the entire league to make sure its discussed — to go forward using it as an example, to stress there is no place for that in our league.” Several coaches echoed Coughlin, with the hope they will need to bring it up only once to their players. Clubs will gather for workouts in mid-April. “Its definitely necessary to mention it,” said Ron Rivera, whose Carolina Panthers play the Saints twice a year in the NFC South. “The precedent has been set by the commissioner and they need to understand that and it is not to be broached again. Going forward, we wont have to go over these things again.” Goodell reiterated the leagues strong stance against non-contract bonuses such as the bounty program that cost New Orleans a $500,000 fine and two second-round draft choices. Goodell said the league will not allow any cash payments between players, whether the clubs are involved or not. “Its not permissible and we are going to take that out of the game,” he said. Goodell expects to speak with players union head DeMaurice Smith before the end of the week and hopes to have the NFLPAs recommendations on punishment for players involved in the bounties by then or soon after. The league will be scheduling additional hearings in the investigation. Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz stressed how easy it is to cross the line from acceptable rewards to something sinister. Schwartz said past awards hes given out while working for the Tennessee Titans and the Lions — baseball bats or a boxing glove for big hits — had league approval, because they didnt have any monetary significance. “It was part of the game-ball program. It wasnt part of anything else,” Schwartz said. “A recognition system has been in effect for football since pee wee balll.dddddddddddd. We give out game balls. We give out trophies at the end of the season for all different things. A lot of colleges give out stickers on helmets; high schools give out stickers on helmets. Theres a big difference between things like that and things like bounties.” Schwartz noted that its not unheard of for QBs to buy gifts for their linemen, or for running backs to do the same if they have a big season. “That would all receive very good press,” he said. “I think what this shows is how fine some of the lines are and how easy it is to go from something like that thats been around and has been part of football to something that should never be part of football and is not good for our game.” The game will see some changes in the upcoming season. All games that go into overtime now cannot end on a field goal on the first possession. The opposing team must get one series, and if it also kicks a field goal, the extra period continues. Of course, if it fails to score it loses, and if it gets a touchdown, it wins. The rule has not been a factor since it was instituted in 2010, with only two playoff games going to OT. One ended on the first play, Tim Tebows 80-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas for a Denver victory over Pittsburgh. The other had several possessions for each team before the Giants beat the 49ers in the NFC title game this season. The vote on adopting the new overtime rule was 30-2. Other rules changes: a team will lose a down for illegally kicking a loose ball; too many men on the field becomes a dead ball foul; and a player receiving a crackback block is now considered a defenceless player and the hit will result in a 15-yard penalty. Not passed were proposals to have the booth official handle video reviews rather than the referee, and outlawing the horse-collar tackle made on quarterbacks in the pocket. Given the NFLs concern with player safety, the failure to extend the horse-collar rule seemed surprising. But competition committee chairman Rich McKay said the ownership “didnt think this can impact on player safety.” “The rule was developed for the open-field tackle when a defender has the chance to do something else (in making the tackle),” he said. “Hes also able to use the runners momentum against him. We didnt think that applied to the pocket, didnt see the injury risk.” Several bylaw changes were tabled until the league meetings in May, including expanding preseason rosters to 90, designating one player suffering a major injury before Week 2 of the season as eligible to return from injured reserve, and moving the trading deadline back two weeks to after Week 8. McKay expects them to pass at the next meetings in Atlanta. “There were good ideas and suggestions, no resistance,” he said. “Well work on the language.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

SAO PAULO, Brazil — Former Brazil and Lyon midfielder Juninho has announced his retirement from football after a 20-year career. The 39-year-old Juninho had been practicing with Brazilian club Vasco da Gama in an attempt to keep playing, but the midfielder said he was struggling too much to recover from a muscle injury sustained late last year. Juninho says “it was privilege to play” as long as he did, “although it was harder than I thought.” The midfielder will be a TV commentator during the World Cup and says he is already “considering a coaching career.” Juninho played in the 2006 World Cup with Brazil. BALTIMORE — One good thing about losing the Kentucky Derby is that nobody wants much of your time for two solid weeks. Bob Bafferts countdown still had 36 hours or so left to run Friday morning when the silver-tongued Hall of Fame trainer stepped outside his barn at Pimlico Race Course and looked at the grandstand looming in the distance. “I dont really get charged up until we walk over there Saturday afternoon,” Baffert said. “Thats when it really becomes the Preakness to me.” Hes won the race five times in 11 tries, three of those with the Kentucky Derby winner in his barn and twice with spoilers, who have history on their side. Only 32 horses have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown in the 130-plus times both races have been run, yet Baffert had three of those, only to lose each time in the Belmont Stakes. That wont be a problem this year, since rival California trainer Doug ONeills bay colt, Ill Have Another, ran down Bafferts Bodemeister in the final few strides at Churchill Downs two weeks ago. “When you come in with the Derby winner, youre on such a high that if things dont go your way, you still feel like, No big deal,” Baffert recalled. “On the other hand, if you come in here still thinking you should have won (the Derby), at least you know youre going to get a better trip. Theres fewer horses and a lot less racing luck involved.” Pimlico handicapper Frank Carulli apparently felt the same way, making Bodemeister the morning-line 8-5 favourite over Ill Have Another, the second choice at 5-2. “That a lot of respect in my mind,” said ONeill, whos enjoyed his turn in the sports spotlight. "If you would have said a few years ago, Hey, would you feel respected if youre 5-2 in the Preakness? I would have said, Sign me up. " ONeills willingness to mix it up was apparent when he made the drive from Louisville right after the Derby. Baffert said that after the blistering pace Bodemeister set in that race, he expected to find little left of his horse besides “hair and lactic acid.” No wonder. Bodemeisters opening half-mile of 45.39 seconds was the fifth-fastest in Derby history, and none of the four horses with faster splits finished better than 13th. Only two went on to run in the Preakness, with Top Avenger finishing last in 1981 and Groovy finishing sixth of seven horses in 1986. Even so, Baffert didnt seem overly concerned. “The horse is deceiving. He will fool you. I think Mike (Smith, his jockey) didnt realize he was going 45. If they didnt have a clock there,” Baffert added, “I would have thought he was going 47.” Most handicappers have cast the Preakness as a two-horse race. Because there wont be a crowded field nor any speed horses to hem Bodemeister in, ONeill was inclined to agree. Though Ill Have Another didnt make his move until the horses turned for home in the 1 1/4-mile Derby, his trainer isnt inclined to let Bodemeister get loose on the lead at the 1 1/16-mile Preakness. “If somebody gets an easy lead, I want it to be us,” ONeill said. “If were sitting behind, I want it to be a pretty heated pace. Those are the two scenarios Id like to see.” Baffert claims not to have thought the race through that far. "I just cant map out a strategy. If he came from off the pace, Id map out a strategy, you know, Mike, you need to do this, this and this. But his strategy is just to break well and keep him in a comfortable mode. “He knows what to do,” Baffert said, referring to his jockey or his horse or maybe both. A moment later, Bode, the youngest of Bafferts kids and Bodemeisters namesake, came running out of the barn, puncturing the relative silence with laughs. Baffert watched the scene and smiled ruefully. “Its been quiet all week. Every time I brought the loser of the Derby here and won, its been really quiet all week. … He just got here,” Baffert said, referring to the boy, "and he doesnt like the pressure of being asked about Bodemeister too much. When the horse got beat, he took it a little bit like its his horse. “I didnt want him to be mad at me, that I didnt do a good job training his horse or anything. Hes funny about that,” Baffert said, lowering his voice. After a week of not saying too much, Baffert wasnt about to tempt fate now. Happ was pummeled by the Pirates on Tuesday, leaving general manager Alex Anthopoulos with an unappealing conundrum: its become easier for him to sell to the fan base the idea of having $12.7-million (Ricky Romeros and Happs combined 2014 salaries) of dead or differently-allocated money than it is to sell the fan base on including the left-hander in the opening day starting rotation. Happ faced 20 batters in three-plus innings. Twelve of them got hits, including Pittsburgh starter Wandy Rodriguez, who hit a wind-aided, opposite field, two-run home run to cap a four-run second inning. Rodriguez had never homered in 437 career major league at-bats. Happ allowed seven earned runs, bloating his springtime ERA over four starts to 20.57. The Blue Jays lost, wait for it, 22-5. “It wasnt a good day for anybody, really,” said manager John Gibbons. “We got pounded pretty good. They werent missing em. We got hit around pretty good.” Meanwhile, back in Dunedin, Dustin McGowan, the sudden favourite for the final available rotation job, threw four innings of scoreless baseball in a Triple-A game. His fastball was clocked in the mid-90s; McGowan hit the 62-pitch mark. “I thought he looked great,” Anthopoulos told a pool reporter in Dunedin. “Its just trying to get him stretched out here. Every step is a step in the right direction, but well see how he feels tonight, tomorrow, all that kind of stuff. He got up to 62 today off of 48 the (outing) before. Well take it outing by outing at this point.” The logical next step, provided McGowans wonky shoulder feels good on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, is to have the right-hander throw another minor league game in Florida on Sunday. “The big thing is that we dont get ahead of ourselves because we re-evaluate it almost daily to see how he feels,” said Anthopoulos. “I always remind him as well, I keep reminding him that at any time any concerns, any tweaks, anything at all, he needs to tell us, and he said, Absolutely. Hes obviously a big part of wanting to do this as well. As I told him when were even exploring this, he needs to want to do this because we would never take chances with his career or with his health. Hes the one who knows how he feels. Hes been through this enough times. He has to communicate with us.” Happ has had a puzzling spring. He arrived in Dunedin under the impression he had a spot in the starting rotation locked up. After poor starts on February 26 and March 3, he missed game action due to a bad back. His two appearances since his return, on March 19 and on Tuesday, have gone no better. “Yeah, thats not an issue,” said Gibbons, when asked if Happs back was still a concern. Happ has an option remaining, meaning he could be sent to the minors without first passing through waivers. However, the fly in the ointment is significant: as a major league veteran with more than five years of service time, Happ has the right to refuse the assignment, at which point the Jays could keep him or release him while paying him full freight. Would Happ be willing to move to the bullpen? “Im not thinking about that,” he said. “Ill answer that question if someone elsee, one of the bosses, decides they need to ask that.dddddddddddd Well deal with that then. But thats not something thats on my mind.” The Blue Jays still have not officially named Drew Hutchison to their starting rotation although its inconceivable he doesnt make the team. Hutchison has been the clubs best pitcher this spring and Anthopoulos is on the record as saying hes taking the best 25 players north. Assuming Hutchison joins R.A. Dickey, Brandon Morrow and Mark Buehrle in the rotation, Anthopoulos, Gibbons and pitching coach Pete Walker have to decide between McGowan, Happ and Todd Redmond for the final spot. The idea of piggybacking McGowan, that is starting him on a strict pitch count and backfilling with Redmond, Esmil Rogers, maybe even Happ, behind him has been bandied about. It likely will be revisited during internal meetings ahead of Sundays deadline to announce the opening day roster. “When we announce the team, everybody will know who it is,” said Gibbons. REYES GOING TO MONTREAL? The Blue Jays are encouraged by the MRI results on Jose Reyes left hamstring, which revealed a minor strain. “Hopefully hes in there the next couple of days, maybe at DH,” said manager John Gibbons. “Let him run half-speed, three-quarter-speed. It actually made us feel pretty good after we heard the results.” When asked on Monday, before he had his MRI, whether he would play through the strain if the regular season already was underway, Reyes didnt answer. It behooves the Jays to be careful, though, especially considering the club plays 91 games (81 at home, 10 in Tampa Bay) of its 162 on artificial turf. “With baseball, too, there can be a lot of dead time too before you actually get a ball,” said Gibbons. “That quick movement will sometimes get you. We feel good about it and you hope it doesnt turn into anything down the road either.” Still, Gibbons says the plan is to bring Reyes to Montreal, where two games will be played on turf, if hes healthy enough to go. “Im sure everybody wants to see him play up there,” said Gibbons. THE SECOND CATCHER R.A. Dickey is scheduled to start the Blue Jays final Grapefruit League home game on Wednesday. By game time, we should have a better idea of who will back up Dioner Navarro. “I would say the guy who catches him (Wednesday) will be the backup catcher,” said Gibbons. “Ill leave it at that.” Erik Kratz and Josh Thole are vying for the job. Gibbons has repeatedly said that effectively catching Dickey is the jobs number one priority. Thole, to the extent someone can be, is a master at it. Hes also got the most experience. Dickeys pitched 565 innings to Thole over their time together with the Mets and Blue Jays. Kratz, a 2002 Blue Jays draft pick, returned to the organization in an offseason trade with the Phillies. Hes a threat to hit a home run, having gone deep 18 times in 375 at-bats over the last two seasons. Thole posted a .175/.256/.242 line in limited action last season. If he makes the team it appears the club will have trouble generating offence from the eighth and ninth (Ryan Goins) spots in the lineup on the days he plays. NEW YORK — Redskins coach Mike Shanahan spoke Monday with the NFLs director of officiating after the league said Sunday nights crew made an error on Washingtons final drive. The league said officials should have stopped play and eliminated confusion about the down and distance at the end of the Giants 24-17 victory at Washington. “I talked to Dean earlier today, he gave me a call and just went over the scenario,” Shanahan said, referring to Dean Blandino, who oversees NFL officiating. “Obviously they made a mistake and you live with it.” With New York leading by seven points just after the two-minute warning, a catch by the Redskins Pierre Garcon on second-and-5 was spotted short of a first down at the Washington 45. Referee Jeff Triplette signalled third down. But the head linesman, with the Redskins in a hurry-up offence, incorrectly motioned for the crew to advance the chains, which caused the down boxes to read first down. “In this situation where there is obvious confusion as to the status of the down, that play should have been stopped prior to third down and the correct down communicated to both clubs,” Blandino said Monday in a statement. “This should have occurred regardless of the fact that Washington had no timeouts and it was inside two minutes.” Only the referee can rule and signal a first down. The official nearest to the down markers and chain crew, the head linesman, is required to wait for that first-down signal from the referee before moving the chains. That did not happen at FedEx Field. After Washingtons incomplete pass on the next play — which many Redskins believed was on first down - the chains were moved back and the down boxes correctly reset to fourth down. Blandino said instant replay review was not used on Garcons catch because the replay official determined the ball was “correctly spotted short of the line to gain for a first down.” Shanahan was asked if he would be in favour of scrapping the chains and using laser technology to help spot the ball. “You talk about it at the owners meeting, kind of go through the variables, exactly how accurate it is and how it would be implemented,” he said. “I think theres a lot of technology that you could possibly use, but before you do that you go through all the situations and find out if its effective and how effective.” Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III said the confusion affected the play calling. “The chain said first down, and then when we came back, we think its second-and-10, and theyre yelling out its fourth down,” Griffin said. “No explanation. No measurement. Didnt stop the clock to allow the chains to move back. And we just had to go ahead and call the play.” Griffin did complete a 6-yard pass to Garcon on fourth-and-1, but safety Will Hill stripped the ball. The Giants then ran out the clock. “I told him I wanted a measurement because I knew it was close,” Shanahan said, not specifying which official he was referring to. “It was inches. And he said, No, its a first down. And he moved the chains. And then after I saw it was fourth down, I asked him, You already told me it was first down. He didnt say anything. So that was quite disappointing.” Speaking to a pool reporter Sunday night, Triplette said: “We signalled third down on the field. The stakes were moved incorrectly. After that play, we said it was still third down. We had signalled third down prior to the play starting. The stakes just got moved incorrectly.” Triplette defended not stopping play, saying it would have given an “unfair advantage.” But Blandino said Monday that was the wrong decision. Giants defensive end Justin Tuck, who played every snap, said he was aware it was not a first down. "I remember turning to the referee and saying, Thats not a first down, " Tuck said Monday. " Obviously, theyre hurrying up, you dont really have time to argue it. “I think at the end of the day, it was actually the right call. It might not have come across in the right manner, but I think it was the right call. And when the ball is getting snapped that fast, its very tough for a referee to get all of these calls right.” . Paris, France – Former champion Maria Sharapova fought her way into the semifinals at the French Open on Tuesday. The seventh-seeded former world No. 1 star Sharapova came from behind to beat rising 20-year-old Venezuelan-born Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1, on Court Chatrier. Muguruza, who displays easy power and a beautiful forehand and serve, shocked defending champion Serena Williams in the second round here last week. Sharapova trailed 6-1, 5-4 against Muguruza before suddenly catching fire and winning nine of the last 10 games on Day 10. The Russian also posted a comeback victory against Sam Stosur in the fourth round, winning nine straight games after trailing that one, 6-3, 4-3, against her fellow former U.S. Open champ. The 27-year-old Sharapova saved five break points while serving at 2-1 in the third set on Tuesday and then won the next game for a double-break lead, at 4-1, and cruised from there versus Muguruza to reach her fifth career French Open semi, including four straight. Sharapova avoided becoming the latest upset victim in the womens draw, which has lost seven of the top-10 seeds. The veteran Sharapova improved to 18-3 in major quarterfinals and won her 48th match at Roland Garros (against 10 losses), breaking a tie with Williams for the most among active female players. Sharapova completed a career Grand Slam with a French Open title in 2012 and lost to Williams in last years marquee finale at Roland Garros. The Russians semifinal opponent will be the 18th-seeded Eugenie Bouchard, who upended 14th-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-5, on Court Lenglen. Bouchard came back from a break down in the final set. The 20-year-old Bouchard will appear in her second Grand Slam semi in as many tries this year, as she was a surprise Australian Open semifinalist back in January. Shes 0-2 lifetime against Sharapova, including a straight-set second-round French Open loss last year. Two more quarterfinals will be staged on Wednesday, when fourth-seeded Romanian Simona Halep takes on 27th-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova and 10th-seeded Italian Sara Errani battles 28th-seeded German Andrea Petkovic. The former world No. 2 and former U.S. Open champion Kuznetsova titled here in 2009 and was the Roland Garros runner-up in 2006. Errani was the 2012 French Open runner-up to Sharapova. The CBC/Radio-Canada announced on Thursday that the network will no longer compete for the rights to professional sports, as the national public broadcaster is cutting $130 million from its budget this year and eliminating 657 jobs over the next two years. “As of today, CBC and Radio Canada is out of the business of competing with the private (broadcasters) for professional sports,” network president Hubert Lacroix told employees in a corporate-wide town hall. The crown corporation maintains it will still compete for other sporting events with interest to Canadians such as the Summer and Winter Olympics. “We remain committed to signature events of national importance such as the Olympics; but, as with Sochi, well approach these events in new ways – new ways of producing, new technologies and new partnership arrangements,” the network said in a statement. While CBC will still broadcast Hockey Night in Canada NHL games on Saturday nights over the next four years, incoming rights holder Rogers will produce the programs, sell the ad space in the time slot and keep the revenue. The netowrk has also had to deal with $115 million in cuts to federal government funding, which was announced in the federal budget two years ago. Hockey Night in Canada has been airing on CBC for over 60 years and the network was also a broadcaster for the Canadian Football League, Montreal Expos and Toronto Blue Jays baseball games and Toronto Raptors basketball. Harvey decided he would not start Sundays nine-kilometre pursuit race because the punishing climb up Alpe de Cermis could have a negative effect on an artery in his leg. The motion of lifting the leg up the steep alpine ski hill can force his hip flexor to bulge, impeding blood flow and circulation. “For me it was pretty clear before the Tour started that I wasnt going to climb that hill,” said Harvey, who also pulled out of the final stage last year. "Being in the lead and the top three for the Tour opened the door to thinking about it, but there is just so much to lose for me physically when the blood flow shuts down completely when Im working so hard. “We dont know exactly how long it takes to recover, and I just dont want to risk anything especially with the Olympics coming up.” It was still a very successful Tour for Harvey, who opened the event last month with a victory and later added silver and bronze. Petter Northug revved up his preparations for next months Sochi Games by winning Saturday, cutting into the overall lead of fellow Norwegian Martin Johnsrud Sundby. Northug fought through snow and rain for the win in 24 minutes 45.6 seconds over the 10-kilometre classical stage. Sundby crossed second, 9.7 seconds behind, and Chris Jespersen was third to complete a Norwegian sweep. The 25-year-old Harvey, from St-Ferreol-les-Neiges, Que., was fifth in 25:21.1. “It was pretty messy weather today but overall my skis were good and I felt good the whole way,” said Harvey. “I started aggressive and fought for the podium the whole way. I think I paced things well and attacked where I needed too which is key to an individual start.” The final stage ends with a four-kilometre climb with pitches that come close to a 30 per cent grade. “With his leg condition, it takes at least one week foor Alex to recover from something like that,” said head coach Justin Wadsworth.dddddddddddd “Alex knows he will not be able to fight for the top three tomorrow with his leg. So looking at what is really to gain, he made the smart decision not to race.” Ivan Babikov of Canmore, Alta., was 27th and Devon Kershaw of Sudbury, Ont., was 52nd. Entering Sundays final stage, Sundby leads Northug by 48.5 seconds. Jespersen is 1:26.8 back in third place. Norwegians are also commanding the womens race, with two-time runner-up Therese Johaug winning a 5K classical stage Saturday to cut into the lead of countrywoman Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen. Johaug had a time of 13:58.4 to finish 14.9 seconds ahead of Jacobsen, with Anne Kyllonen of Finland third, 19.2 back. In the overall, Jacobsens lead over Johaug was sliced to 23.8 seconds, with Kyllonen 1:31.5 back. Northug won the 15K classical title at last years world championships in Val di Fiemme and also took gold in the 50K at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. He has also finished on the podium four times in the Tour de Ski but has never won the competition. “I am getting stronger with each competition,” Northug said. “This time I am not as tired going to the final stage.” Sundby has never come close to winning the Tour de Ski. “I felt quite tired after yesterdays competition,” said Sundby, who won Fridays stage. “I felt better in the second lap. I have to recover well today and get ready for the final climb. It will be pure pain.” Johaug was runner-up in 2011 and 2013 and finished third in 2012, while Jacobsen has never reached the podium. “I feel I am in a very good shape and I can compete with almost everybody,” Jacobsen said. “I do not think much about the overall result. Its already a great achievement for me to be in the leading position before the final stage. I am happy that there is a high chance that a Norwegian lady crosses the finish on Alpe Cermis in first place.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie, Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger gathered for the latest installment of Insider Trading and the topics discussed included the Buffalo Sabres general manager search, the resurfacing of former Toronto Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson, Team Canadas captain and the Edmonton Oilers asking price for Sam Gagner. Who will become the new general manager of the Buffalo Sabres? McKenzie: The very clear front-runner and Pat LaFontaines first choice is Ottawa Senators assistant general manager, Tim Murray. As of Tuesday evening, no formal offer had been made to Murray and no contract negotiations have taken place as of yet. However, it is clear LaFontaine would like Murray to be the guy. In related news, Boston Bruins assistant general manager Jim Bennings window of permission to talk to the Sabres expired Tuesday. He is now out of the picture, there are also other finalists that have been told they are no longer part of the mix. Right now it is headed toward Tim Murray, but there is no formal offer or contract negotiations taking place just yet. Who will become the GM of the Calgary Flames? McKenzie: Brian Burke is getting set to commence his search, it is likely to be a slow and deliberate pace and it could be until the draft before Burke has picked a new GM. Burke has no intention of doing the job himself long-term, but he may fill the role for the balance of this season. There are several reasons for this, he will looking at many experienced candidates such as Joe Nieuwendyk and Darcy Regier, as well as up and comers like Mike Futa from the Los Angeles Kings and Brad Treliving of the Phoenix Coyotes. Due to the length of the Buffalo search, many teams granted their officials a window to interview and are not in position where they want to grant permission again and have their guys flapping in the breeze for another search. Therefore, this could drag out for quite some time. Ron Wilson walked away from hockey after being fired by the Toronto Maple Leafs, is there a chance he may resurface? Dreger: Wilson basically disappeared after the disappointment with the Leafs in 2010, 2011, 2012. There is a chance he could return, he is discreetly putting word out there that his ready, waiting and willing to coach again. For some, he may be considered a long-shot and it is relatively quiet on the coaching front but aside from his coaching record with the Maple Leafs, he is considered to be a very good coach, as his record of 1,400 games would indicate. Who will be Team Canadas captain, it seems obvious with Sidney Crosby but Jonathan Toews has two Olympics appearances, two Stanley Cups and was terrific in the 2010 Games, is there a possibly a question there? LeBrun: Toews will be in his second Olympics and there is some argument, and how could there not be after everything Toews has accomplished, but the betting money is obviously on Sidney Crosby, the best player in the world. Whats interesting to me is the dynamic between Toews and Crosby, mutual admirations aside, I remember when Toews got a text from Crosby when Toews was named captain of Chicago, that meant a lot to him. I remember in September we asked top players who their top forward in the NHL was and most of them, of course, said Crosby but Toews said “and by 30 per cent its Sidney Crosby.” So there is, I think, a special bond between those two guys and theyll both wear a letter in Sochi. We expect Crosby, Kunitz, Stamkos on the top line but if Stamkos isnt ready to go, do they have a list of top two replacements for him? Lebrun: They have some candidates, I think among those at the top is Claude Giroux, a big surprise omission from Team Canada, hes one of those strong candidates if he continues to play well. James Neal is another option, a great triggerman, a guy like Stamkos that could fill the net. Those are the top two guys. Is there an X-factor for Team Canada? LeBrun: Ralph Krueger, the former Switzerland national coach, talked to the Canadian national coaching staff and they cannot believe what impact hes had in his feedback for them on the big ice and international hockey. In fact, Kruger is going to meet with head coach Mike Babcock on the Detroit Red Wings upcoming western road trip. Hell update Canada again on what hes seen overseas. P.K. Subban is on Team Canada, how are his contract negotiations going with the Montreal Canadiens? McKenzie: Negotiations are ongoing, there is no real hard news to report there other than we know Dion Phaneuf signed a long-term deal with the Maple Leafs worth $7 million a year. P.K. Subbans asking price will be somewhere from $8 million to $9 million a year. I am sure the Canadiens will not be thrilled about that and I suspect its going to be tough sledding for some time to get this deal done. Dreger: We will also continue watch the speculation around the Edmonton Oilers and Sam Gagner, there is no question the Oilers would consider moving him. The expected rate of return would be a top-six forward, a top-four defenceman or a starting goalie. . The 25-year-old rookie forward scored the winner on his first career shootout attempt as the Philadelphia Flyers overcame an early deficit to earn a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. There is considerable interest from fans around the league as well, with all eight teams vulnerable to poaching. Perhaps his best option at landing his first choice at QB, the expansion draft also poses problems for general manager Marcel Desjardins. http://www.officialnhljerseysonline.com/cyber-m…. Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Buddy Robinson scored 43 seconds apart in the second period to lead the Binghamton Senators to a 4-1 victory over the Bulldogs in American Hockey League action Friday night at the Bell Centre. The first-year manager was asked after Detroits 2-1 loss to Kansas City on Wednesday how his mood is when he heads home from the ballpark these days.ORLANDO – Its been a rewarding season for Kyle Lowry, the Raptors most important player, but its also been a long one. The eighth-year point guard played in his 500th career game on Sunday, a 98-93 win over the Orlando Magic. Does he feel like hes played in that many games? “No,” he said initially, before reconsidering. “I mean, this season, yeah.” “This is a game I love to play,” the 28-year-old continued. “Ive probably played 500 more in street ball games growing up. So this is a great accomplishment for me to say Ive made it that far.” After missing 14 games last year, his first in Toronto, Lowry is the Raptors only starter to suit up in every game this season. Hes 10th in the NBA in minutes played and is fighting through a number of ailments, but with fewer than 10 contests remaining before he makes his first playoff appearance in five years, Lowrys still the engine that drives his team. Despite taking a 19-point lead into third quarter – their largest halftime advantage of the season – the Raptors began to come apart in the second half. The Magic, down by as many as 21 points, hit 22 of their final 33 shots and tied the game early in the fourth. With his team up by two, Lowry misfired on a long three-point shot, absorbing a fair amount of contact on the play, immediately turning to give official Eli Roe the trademark Lowry scowl. Scorned after the no-call, Lowry would get the ball back off of an Amir Johnson offensive rebound and drain the same shot he had just missed, shooting another look at Roe on the way down the court. Weve seen this before. Lowry was fired up. The Raptors point guard scored nine of his 16 points in the final quarter, holding off the Magic, who were coming hard. Dwane Casey continues to seek passable opportunities to manufacture rest for Lowry, but theyve proven few and far between. As he and DeMar DeRozan sat to end the third and begin the fourth, the lead dwindled down and in came Torontos star backcourt. Lowry logged 35 minutes while DeRozan – who scored 15 of his 28 points at the line – played 38. “Its tricky,” Casey admitted. “Its tricky to make sure we cut their minutes and not give up leads. Its something we have to learn to do, but I thought the second unit did their job. They built a lead. Now its up to the starters coming back in. I wasnt going to play them a lot the second half, but they kept chipping away at it so I couldnt wholesale sub the second unit in.” After a quiet first half, Lowry – to his own admission – began the second half lacking the “energy and effort” hes become synonymous with.dddddddddddd The wear and tear of a long season has taken its toll and he, understandably, has to pick his spots, but there he was when his team needed him most. The Raptors needed this win with games against the Heat, Rockets and Pacers on deck. “Were happy about the win but we cannot be satisfied about the way we got it,” Casey said. ““The hardest thing to do in this league is to play with a lead and thats something we have to learn to do.” Big night for JV In a tough matchup against the Magics Nikola Vucevic, Jonas Valanciunas did not back down and more than held his own. The Raptors sophomore centre got off to a hot start, scoring 10 of his 20 points in the first quarter. “They are two good, young players that are coming up in this league,” Casey said of Valanciunas and Vucevic, who led Orlando with 22 points and 10 rebounds. “So you will see them go at each other a lot in the future.” Bench comes through in second quarter Without Patrick Patterson – who could return Monday in Miami, but missed his 13th straight with an elbow injury – the Raptors second unit has under-performed. Beginning the second quarter with an unconventional lineup that included Nando De Colo running the point and Landry Fields, who hasnt played much since a spot-start early in March, the reserves gave Toronto a lift that ballooned the lead going into intermission. “They really gave us a great boost,” Lowry said of the bench. “They pretty much won the game in the second quarter.” Vasquez gets stitched up After getting hit in the face early in the game, Greivis Vasquez required five stitches to close a gash below his left eye. He return late in the first half with a bandage covering the wound and finished the game with five points in 15 minutes of action. The stat Toronto matched a franchise record with its 20th road win of the season Friday, one shy of finishing the season above .500 away from home for the first time in team history. They have four road games to go, three against losing teams. The quote “I thought he did a heck of a job of initiating the offence, being in attack mode,” said Casey on De Colo, who played the point for the first time as a Raptor in the second quarter. “We know he can pass the ball but what he did tonight was get to the rim. He grew on us as a coaching staff tonight… not that he wasnt there in the beginning.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

VICTORIA – Emerson Etem had his league-leading sixth and seventh goals as the Medicine Hat Tigers beat the Victoria Royals 4-2 in WesternHockey League action Thursday. Etem used his speed to bust in on the wing and score the first goal of the game. He later scored in the third period to seal the victory. The Tigers (3-2-0) looked strong against the Royals (3-3), who were unable to sustain pressure when they attempted a third-period comeback. Medicine Hat went up 3-0 early in the second with goals by Scott McKay and Matthew Konan, both scoring for the first time this season. Victoria tried to make it a game when Royals centre Logan Nelson scored his fifth. Etems second goal, a tip in front of the net, put the Tigers up 4-1 at 1:06 of the third period. Royals right-winger Robin Soudek scored his fifth goal of the season, and 100th point in the WHL, just under four minutes into the final period to make it 4-2, but Victoria could not make up the two-goal deficit. The scrappy game featured two lopsided fights. First Royals defenceman Keegan Kanzig got a knockout punch in against Tigers forward Cole Grbavac early in the opening period, then Victoria winger Tim Traber was one-punched by Medicine Hats Adam Rehak with less than five minutes left in the game. Eriksson was credited with nine saves. Jordan Eberle had a goal and two assists for the Oilers. Eberle produced his points in the first 7:38 of the game as all of the scoring was completed in the opening period. Martin Marincin, David Perron and Jesse Joensuu also scored for the Oilers. Edmonton goaltender Devan Dubnyk stopped 25 of 26 shots as he played the whole game. Brendan Gaunce, with his second goal in two pre-season games, scored for the Canucks. The Canucks went with several core players among the 10 NHL veterans they dressed, including Daniel and Henrik Sedin and defenceman Kevin Bieksa. Edmontons lineup contained 12 NHL regulars, with Taylor Hall, Nick Schultz and Ryan Smyth among them. Eberle opened the scoring 4:49 into the game as he slid a wraparound in off of Luongo. COLUMBUS, Ohio — In a game in which both teams badly needed a win to stay in the playoff picture, Jason Spezza did what captains do. Spezza scored a power-play goal with 5 minutes left and Stephane Da Costa had the other two goals to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. “It was a tie game and we got a faceoff play and then a little bit of puck luck in front of the net,” Spezza said. “Johnny on the spot.” After Nathan Horton went off for tripping at 13:08, the Senators took advantage late in the power play. Colin Greenings pass through the crease was deflected by Blue Jackets defenceman Fedor Tyutin, with Spezza closest to the loose puck. His first shot was blocked by Tyutin, but he took another whack at it and got it past McElhinney for the tiebreaker. Spezza, named captain in September, is having a solid if unspectacular season. He also picked up his 23rd assist to go with his 14th goal. But he came into the game with a minus-21 plus/minus rating. “No doubt Ive had much better years in the past,” he said. “But theres a lot of hockey left, and I have a lot to give.” Craig Anderson had 34 saves for the Senators, who had lost two in a row and four of five but picked up a critical win against another team theyre battling for contention in the Eastern Conference. “Youve just got to be patient,” Anderson said while improving to 17-10-7 on the year. “Thats the key to any position, especially goalie. You start chasing (the puck), they can make you look silly or foolish. Patience is a virtue.” Down a goal headed into the third period, the Blue Jackets tied it on a power play. Anderson turned away one hard shot by James Wisniewski from the top of the right circle, but moments later the Columbus defenceman got another chance and this time he found the net. Matt Calvert helped set it up with a screen that completely blocked Andersons vision. The goal was Wisniewskis fifth of the year and came at the 7:16 mark. But that just set up Spezzas big goal. Anderson made several clutch saves in the waning moments after the Blue Jackets pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. Up 1-0 after the opening period, the Senators made it 2-0 at the 6:24 mark of the second — and again it was Da Costa getting the goal. Spezza corraled a loose puck along the back wall and waited patiently before feeding Da Costa for his second of the night and second of the season. “Its real good to see him score,” coach Paul MacLean said. “He was a good player for us tonight. Since hes come up, hes been good.” Calvert carried the puck around the back of the goal and fed it to the point, eventually getting it back at the right doorstep. He slipped a blind, between-his-legs and backward pass to Atkinson, who had an empty net for his 16th at the 12-minute mark. Ottawas Milan Michalek split two defenders in the high slot but lost the puck, with Da Costa trailing the play. He jabbed at the puck and got it through heavy traffic at the 8:06 mark of the first period. The first one was just lying there on the power play so I kind of jumped on it," said Da Costa, playing only his eighth game with the Senators this season. “The second one was a real good pass from Spez to the backdoor and I just tapped it in.” The Blue Jackets, playing their third game in four nights and second of a back-to-back, looked tired and sluggish most of the evening. “It took a long time (to get everyone skating) and some guys still arent going,” Columbus coach Todd Richards said. “To me, thats it right there. Were a good team when we have 18 skaters going and we were missing too many tonight.” NOTES: Columbus LW Blake Comeau saw his first action after missing nine games with a sprained medial-collateral ligament in his left knee. … Ottawa improved to 12-9-5 on the road this year, better than the 11-11-5 the Senators are at home. … Senators D Chris Phillips did not play after suffering a minor injury during Saturdays 6-3 loss at Carolina. The agreement Thursday was for $5,000 above the midpoint between the $2.4 million he had asked for and the $1.6 million the Indians had offered when the sides exchanged arbitration figures last month.BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Jeff Brohms belief in taking chances and having a creative offence helped Western Kentucky pile up yardage, points and victories last season. It also helped him become the Hilltoppers new head coach. WKU athletic director Todd Stewart announced Friday that it was promoting the offensive co-ordinator, naming Brohm as its coach. Brohm is replacing Bobby Petrino, who Thursday was named the Louisville head coach. Brohm vowed to maintain WKUs offensive proficiency as the Hilltoppers move into Conference USA next season. “Were going to try to stay cutting edge, be ahead of the curve and be creative,” he said during a press conference Friday afternoon after becoming WKUs 19th head coach. “Thats one thing as a coach that I take pride in — not just studying ourselves but the best teams in the country, making sure were not missing out on anything other teams do,” he said. “And making sure were giving our players the best chance to succeed.” Brohm, 42, takes control of a Hilltoppers squad that went 8-4 in their final year as a member of the Sun Belt Conference and just missed a second straight bowl appearance as an FBS school. A Louisville native who played quarterback for the Cardinals and was an assistannt coach at the school under Petrino, Brohm built the Hilltoppers into the Sun Belts second-ranked offence (458.dddddddddddd5 yards per game) in his first season as co-ordinator. Running back Antonio Andrews was named conference player of the year. The former NFL quarterback has sent 20 players including four QBs to the pros. Brohms coaching resume includes stops at Florida Atlantic, Illinois and UAB. Stewart said the Hilltoppers offensive success last season made searching for Petrinos replacement a no-brainer. “Jeff earned this over the past 12 months and was a big reason we won eight games,” the AD said, adding that it would have been a waste of time to interview anyone else for the job. Brohm said Petrino was very supportive of him being a head coach while he was a co-ordinator and told him the “best thing” was to do it at WKU. Now that he has the job, the next step is trying to win the C-USA title. “I think its a quality conference and were excited to be in it,” Brohm said. "It will bring a lot of energy to our fans and team to play new teams and experiment with going to different places and I think we fit in great. “In our first year our goal is to win the conference championship.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

CHICAGO — Derrick Rose isnt wavering. He still sees himself as a star, a cornerstone player, despite another major knee injury that brought his long-awaited return to a screeching halt. So he wasnt quite sure what to make of the idea. Is it time for the Chicago Bulls to move on, to abandon the idea of building around him, given his injuries? “What can I say to that?” Rose said. Then, after a long pause, he added, “You could be a fool if you want to. Dead serious. I know Im going to be all right.” In fact, hes not quite ruling out a return this season. The superstar point guard left the door slightly open for a comeback in the playoffs if his surgically repaired right knee is healed — even though the team has said he will miss the rest of the year. Rose tore the medial meniscus in his right knee in a game at Portland on Nov. 22. He had surgery in Chicago three days later, cutting short his comeback after he sat out last season recuperating from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. “If Im healthy and the situation is right, I will be back playing,” Rose said Thursday when asked if he might return for the playoffs. “If Im healthy and my meniscus is fully healed, of course Ill be out there playing. But if its something totally different and the outcome is not how I would want it to be, theres no need.” That comment aside, the odds of a comeback this season appear to be just about nil given that the team has ruled him out. “Right now, its been determined that hes out for the season,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “So thats the way were going to approach. If something changes later on, well adjust then.” The bigger issue remains how effective Rose will be whenever he makes his next return. The MVP in 2011, he tore the ACL in his left knee in the playoff opener against Philadelphia the following year, sending top-seeded Chicago to a first-round exit. The Bulls relived their nightmare last month in Portland when Rose lost his footing while turning to get back on defence. Rose limped across the court, unable to put any weight on his knee, a huge blow for a team that thought it would challenge Miami in the Eastern Conference. Rose is in an all-too-familiar spot, trying to recuperate. He has played in just 50 NBA games — 49 in the regular season and that lone playoff game — since the Bulls run to the conference finals during his MVP season, but he felt as if he was returning to form just as he went down again. Rose was averaging 15.9 points and was shooting just over 35 per cent. But he looked a little better in his final two games with 19 points in a loss at Denver and 20 against Portland. “I was catching a rhythm of how I used to play,” he said. “I think I was getting in condition more than anything for this season. For this one to happen, just from me turning and running back down the court, theres nothing I can say about it, nothing I can do about it, but just take it, be strong.” Rose wondered how it could happen to him again after everything he went through. But he was also relieved he didnt suffer an ACL tear. Even so, he knew the injury was serious when he was being examined in Portland. He said his leg was “catching on the meniscus side, on the inside.” “I started thinking about, Why me? and all that stuff the day after the surgery,” Rose said. He said meniscus tear was a “freak accident.” “(The doctors) look at the tape, look at the film,” Rose said. “The first one (the ACL tear) could have been I put too much pressure or I put too much weight on that leg at that time. This one … I didnt buckle me knee or anything. I paused for a second. I was able to still run a few steps before I couldnt walk. It just happened.” Now, hes going for therapy every day. Hes incorporating yoga and swimming into his rehab routine and is able to put pressure on his leg. He said he might try to land a spot on the U.S. world championship team next summer if hes ready, but he still wont be playing in any pickup games. He also said hes not about to start recruiting players to Chicago — something he hasnt done in the past — even though the Bulls core could have a different look. Luol Deng has an expiring contract and Carlos Boozer is a candidate to be amnestied. But Rose said he hasnt thought about possible changes. “Theres a chance I could come back so Im just cheering them on,” he said. For now, the Bulls are in a difficult spot. They were third in the Central division at 7-9 entering Thursdays game against Miami, one that looked like a marquee matchup when the schedule came out. Since then, it has lost that shine. Rose insisted hes not finished. “I believe that Im a special player. I think people love the way that I just play. I dont try to impress anyone while Im playing or anything. Ive just got a feel for the game. I know my story is far from done.” wholesale jerseys . When you think teams you imagine a group of people who all shop at the same jersey store and move together in a large pack with a common goal, which is usually scoring goals. Guay underwent knee surgery over the summer, then returned for the start of the World Cup season after an intensive rehab program.QUEBEC — Eugenie Bouchard gave Canada a 2-0 lead over Slovakia on Saturday in the Fed Cup World Group playoff tie at Laval University. It took world No. 18 Bouchard two hours seven minutes to beat No. 137 Kristina Kucova in three sets 7-6 (0), 2-6, 6-1. “I didnt play well today. I am proud the way I fought through it” said Bouchard after the match. The Montreal native started very slowly, not being able to find her rhythm, committing unforced errors and double faulting on important points. “Lack of consistency was a big issue for me today” she added. Down 0-3 in the opening set, Bouchard started winning some key rallies, and after tying the set 6-6 she won seven points in a row in the tiebreaker to take the first set 7-6. But Kucova, who never finished a season being ranked inside the WTAs Top 100, played with even more determination. Hitting winners off both sides with her two-handed groundstrokes she won the second set quickly and decisively. “I know I can play well against top players,” said Kucova. “This year Ive already play 3 set matches against Flavia (Pennetta) and Alize (Cornet). Ive lost, but I know I can play at their level.” Bouchard then centred herself and cruised to a 6-1 win in the final set. Earlier, Aleksandra Wozniak earned a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Janna Cepelova in the first match of the tie.dddddddddddd The Blainville, Que., native trailed 2-5 in the second set before she began playing more confidently off the ground, moving her opponent around the court and forcing errors from the young Slovak. “It was a difficult match,” said Wozniak. “Weve never played before so I was focusing on reading her game, and this is why I was missing so much in the beginning of the match” Cepelova, ranked almost 100 spots higher than Wozniak, twice served for the match in the second and third sets but couldnt finish off the win. “I wanted to win this match so much! Ive been here for 12 days waiting for today,” said Wozniak. “It was so close, and I thought Ive already won this match” Canada can secure a spot in the World Group I for 2015 in the first reverse singles match, when Bouchard plays Cepelova. The Canadians only need to win one match on Sunday to beat Slovakia for a place in the elite World Group. "But I have to play much better than today. Have to find my consistency before tomorrows match " said Bouchard. After the first match between Bouchard and Cepelova, Wozniak will face Kucova, and in doubles competition Torontos Sharon Fichman and Ottawas Gabriela Dabrowski will play Janette Husarova and Cepelova.
