Tim Wallach, Murray Cook and Dave Van Horne – three men whose names were synonymous with the Montreal Expos – will be inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame on June 21. The Hall also announced on Monday that Canadian national team coach Jim Ridley will be inducted posthumously. “Tim Wallach and Dave Van Horne are two names that have become synonymous with the Montreal Expos, and both have had a significant impact on baseball in this country, and Murray Cook and Jim Ridley helped blaze a trail for Canadians in the professional scouting and executive ranks,” said Scott Crawford, the halls director of operations said in a statement. “Were proud and excited to celebrate their careers in St. Marys this June.” Wallach is the Expos all-time leader in several statistical categories, including games played (1,767), hits (1,694), doubles (360), RBI (905) and total bases (2,728). Nicknamed “Eli” by his teammates, Wallach also ranks third all-time amongst Expos in runs (737) and fourth in home runs (204). Chosen 10th overall by the Expos in the 1979 amateur draft, Wallach began his big league career as an outfielder before evolving into the best third baseman in the franchises history. In 13 seasons with the Expos from 1980 to 1992, Wallach was selected to five all-star games (1984, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990), won three Gold Gloves (1985, 1988, 1990) and captured two Silver Slugger Awards (1985, 1987). He was also named to the Topps All-Star Rookie team in 1981, topped the National League in doubles in 1987 and 1989 and finished fourth in National League MVP voting in 1987. Van Horne began his Montreal career behind the mike with the Expos first game on April 8, 1969 until the end of the 2000 season. He became known for his trademark catch-phrases like “Up, up and away!” when the Expos hit a home run. In his 32 seasons with the Expos, he broadcast the down-to-the-wire pennant races in 1979 and 1980, the teams only post-season run in 1981 and Dennis Martinezs perfect game on July 28, 1991 – a performance that inspired, perhaps, his most famous call, “El Presidente, El Perfecto!” In 2001, Van Horne accepted the radio play-by-play position with the Florida Marlins and he would later broadcast the clubs World Series-winning 2003 campaign. In 1996, Van Horne received the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fames Jack Graney Award for broadcasting excellence and 15 years later, he was the recipient of the National Baseball Hall of Fames equivalent honour, the Ford C. Frick Award. Now entering his 46th year of broadcasting major league games, Van Horne is set to become the second Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inductee (Tom Cheek is the other) to have won both the Jack Graney and Ford C. Frick Awards. Born in Sackville, N.B. in 1940, Murray Cook has spent more than half a century in professional baseball. After graduating from Ohio University with a masters degree in history in 1962, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played shortstop and third base in the lower levels of their system for parts of four years, before hanging up his spikes to become the general manager of their Class-A affiliate in Gastonia in 1966. The Pirates promoted him to their big league front office in 1967. He was named the teams assistant farm director the following year and soon rose through the ranks to become the clubs assistant director of minor league operations in 1972 and director of scouting in 1977. After 21 years in the Pirates organization, Cook was hired to be the New York Yankees scouting director in January 1983. Just over six months later, he was named the clubs general manager, becoming just the second Canadian to be a big league GM (Huntsville, Ont., native George Selkirk was the Washington Senators GM from 1964 to 1969). Cook remains just one of five Canadians to serve as a GM at the major league level. The others are Selkirk, Gord Ash (Toronto Blue Jays, 1995 to 2001), Doug Melvin (Texas Rangers, 1994 to 2001; Milwaukee Brewers, 2003 to present) and Alex Anthopoulos (Toronto Blue Jays, 2009 to present). In 1984, Cook was reassigned to the position of vice-president and director of scouting with the Yankees, before he replaced John McHale as general manager of the Expos on September 5 of that year. Drafting Randy Johnson, signing free agent Dennis Martinez and rebuilding the Expos into a surprising contender were among the highlights of his close to three years in Montreal. Following his tenure with the Expos, he served as the general manager of the Cincinnati Reds in 1988 and 1989. Since 1990, he has worked in scouting capacities for the Minnesota Twins, Miami Marlins, Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. In 2010, he was named East Scout of the Year for his contributions to the scouting field. He is currently the Tigers East Coast regional cross checker. After two seasons as an outfielder in the Milwaukee Braves organization in 1964 and 1965, Toronto native Jim Ridley returned to Canada where he would have a significant impact on baseball in his home country for the next four decades. While continuing his playing career in the Intercounty Baseball League – where he was named league MVP with Stratford Hillers in 1974 – Ridley launched his storied coaching and scouting career. He began as a part-time scout with the Detroit Tigers in 1973, before joining the Toronto Blue Jays in 1976 to run the clubs first tryout camp in Utica, N.Y. In his 26 years as a scout with the Blue Jays, Ridley was the driving force behind the clubs decisions to sign Canadians like Paul Spoljaric, Rob Butler and David Corrente. He also served as a coach with the Blue Jays rookie-level affiliate in Medicine Hat from 1978 to 1980. A highly respected coach at the local level, Ridley also coached the Canadian junior national team from 1983 to 1988, leading the squad to bronze medals at the World Junior Baseball Championship in 1983 and 1987. In 1988, he coached the Canadian Olympic baseball team and three years later, he was tabbed to manage Canadas squad at the Pan Am Games. Starting in 2002, Ridley served as a scout with the Minnesota Twins. Rene Tosoni and Jon Waltenbury are among the Canadians he signed and brought into the Twins organization. Ridley passed away from cancer on November 28, 2008. Each year, the Canadian Baseball Network presents the Jim Ridley Award to the countrys top scout in his memory. Buckingham Palace said the monarch will open both the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics this summer, signalling that both events will be celebrated as great state occasions — something the British are famous for. It is the first time the queen has opened the Paralympic Games, though she has often honoured Paralympians for their achievements in the past. Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip, will perform the ceremonial role at the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium when the Olympic games begin on July 27, and for the Paralympic Games on Aug. 29. “I think that this is great news for the games,” said Tanni Grey Thompson, one of Britains most successful Paralympic athletes, in an email. “Im sure that it will make it very special for the athletes. It really raises it to another level.” The queen follows in the footsteps of her father, the late King George VI, who opened the 1948 London Olympics, and her great grandfather, King Edward VII, who opened the 1908 London Olympics. Elizabeth also opened the 1976 Games in Canada, where she is the head of state, while Philip did so on her behalf at Melbourne, Australia, in 1956. The decision to open both ceremonies caps a very busy year for the queen, whose Diamond Jubilee this year marks her 60 years on the throne. The monarch, 85, and Philip, 90, are planning an extensive tour of the United Kingdom during the celebrations, including visits to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Philip is planning to stick to the schedule desspite his December heart scare, which required the insertion of a stent to keep his coronary arteries open.dddddddddddd. At home, the celebrations will include a flotilla on the River Thames, a gala concert in front of Buckingham Palace (with headliners including Paul McCartney and Elton John) and a carriage procession through the streets of London following a service of thanksgiving. Unlike earlier jubilee celebrations, the queen will send her children and grandchildren on official visits to many Commonwealth countries rather than undertake the strenuous voyages herself. She will be busy at the palace, though. Elizabeth will open Buckingham Palace to visitors from June 30-July 8 to accommodate Olympic activities. The palace then will close for a few weeks — until July 31 — before opening to the public as is the monarchs usual summer practice. Though it was long assumed that the queen, as head of state, would open the Olympics, her involvement in opening the Paralympics was not widely anticipated, as she normally takes her holiday at this time of year. Historian Hugo Vickers said that the decision reflects her interest in honouring the accomplishments of the athletes. “They are going to be taken very seriously,” he said of the games. “I think its going to be great.” Some 4,200 athletes will take part in the Paralympics Games from Aug. 29 to Sept 9. The event marks the return of the games to their roots. The Paralympics started in London in 1948 when injured veterans held the first disabled sport competition in archery. LONDON — Fulham defender Sascha Riether has been suspended for three matches for stamping on Manchester United midfielder Adnan Januzaj during a Premier League match. The English Football Association had charged the German right back with violent conduct after retrospectively reviewing video evidence of an incident that was missed by match officials at Craven Cottage on Saturday. Riether accepted the charge and his ban begins with immediate effect, ruling him out of league games against Liverpool, Swansea and West Ham. Wiggins, from Vaughan, Ont., joined his former coach as a guest instructor at Selfs basketball camp in suburban Kansas City on Sunday. And while Wiggins declined to speak to the few reporters at Shawnee Mission West High School, Self said the rookie wants to carve out his own legacy in the NBA. "When all this trade stuff started, I talked to Andrew and Andrew told me, “I hope I get traded,” Self said. "And Im like, No you dont. And he said, “Coach, I do. Its better for me, knowing my personality and what I need to do, to go somewhere where Im forced to be something as opposed to going in there where theyre going to be patient with me and Im going to be a piece.” Earlier this week, The Associated Press and several other outlets reported a deal has been reached to send Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and a first-round pick to Minnesota for All-Star forward Kevin Love, who will join LeBron James and Kyrie Irving to form a new “Big 3” in Cleveland. The deal cannot be consummated until Aug. 23, when Wiggins is eligible to be traded. Self said that he initially thought everything worked out perfectly for Wiggins, who would have a chance to win immediately in Cleveland. But he also ssaw Wiggins point: The low-key, soft-spoken swingman could fare better if hes carrying the weight of a franchise.dddddddddddd That would never have happened if Wiggins was playing in Jamess lengthy shadow. “Even though in a weird way everybody would love the opportunity to play with LeBron because youre guaranteed winning,” Self said, “for the longevity of his career, he needs to develop that mindset to be the guy, for him to be great, and I think being Minnesota will help him do that.” Wiggins, who set numerous freshman records during his lone season with the Jayhawks, also appears to be a good fit for the Timberwolves. While his defence is already NBA-caliber, Wiggins will be able to develop his offence alongside point guard Ricky Rubio in an up-tempo system. Speaking of that offence, Wiggins took part in a modified game of horse on Saturday against former Kansas stars Jeff Graves, Jeff Hawkins and several young campers. After clanking a series of 3-pointers off the iron, Wiggins was the first contestant to be eliminated. He took the ouster with a smile and a shrug, just as he has all of the trade talk. “I think hes handled everything great. Hes excited,” Self said. “I think the whole thing thats been blown out of proportion a bit is that hes been in limbo. Hes known since the summer that hed be traded. Its OK. In some ways hes looking forward to going to Minnesota.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

It was a classic “Dont ask how, but how many” kind of night for Toronto FC. TFC was second best for long stretches in the second leg of their Amway Canadian Championship tie against the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place. Good, however, was good enough in a 2-1-regulation loss, making the home and away tie 3-3 on aggregate. The scoreline was sufficient to send the game to extra time and, after 30 minutes solved nothing, for the first time in Toronto FCs history, a match would be decided in penalties. All five Toronto FC penalty-takers scored and goalkeeper Joe Bendik saved Kekuta Manneh, good for a 5-3 win on penalties sending TFC to the two-legged final against the Montreal Impact. It was full value for entertainment in Vancouver and a great night for Canadian soccer. It was end-to-end stuff for much of the match from two teams featuring far-from-full-strength starting XIs. The crowd of 18,470 was electric and the energy on the field matched the enthusiasm. It had a cup final feel about it despite first choice talent watching from the sidelines. Whitecaps manager Carl Robinson elected to go with a similar young team that lost 2-1 at BMO Field a week ago, making eight changes from his team that won 1-0 at Columbus on Saturday. Robinson brought on more accomplished regulars late in the match as he searched for a winner. You have to wonder if hes asking himself “What if?” Toronto FC was ripe for the picking. Perhaps a more established starting XI could have found the goals needed to advance, but his young, inexperienced side came oh-so-close, and was deserving of a better fate. They were the better team. Toronto FC manager Ryan Nelsen made five changes from his team a week ago, including three along the backline. Regulars Jermain Defoe, Steven Caldwell, Julio Cesar, Justin Morrow, Jackson and Alvaro Rey were all either unavailable and/or didnt play. Nelsen will be happy with his teams spirit and ability to remain mostly composed against a team heaping on the pressure. The same questions remain of whether or not Toronto FC can be something more than a team reliant on the counter attack. Is it the players, the tactics or unfamiliarity that are holding Toronto FC back from dictating a positive pace in a match? TFC has yet to meet expectations and will now be tasked to move closer to that bar without their best player, Michael Bradley, who leaves for World Cup duty. While it may not go down as a vintage Toronto FC performance (out-chanced and out-passed by over 100), advancing in the competition is an all-important step in making the club competitive on all fronts. As the team continues to build into a club with true ambition and the framework/ability to do-so, qualification for the CONCACAF Champions League and silverware of any kind are stepping stones. Here are five thoughts from Toronto FCs Canadian Championship second-leg in Vancouver. 1) Controversial Goal – Whitecaps supporters will claim Toronto FC should never have had the away goal that ultimately sent the tie to extra time. Doniel Henrys 4th-minute goal was highly disputed, but not truly without the assistance of video replay. Bradleys free kick sailed into the Whitecaps 18-yard box and defender Nick Hagglund beat goalkeeper Marco Carducci to the ball in the air. The referee allowed the play to continue, despite Hagglund looking to impede the goalkeeper with a forearm to the face. The ball went off the crossbar to Henry who tapped the ball home. Although it wasnt noticed at the time, Henry should also have been called offside. It looked as though Henry was fair game to make a play on the ball with a Whitecaps defender covering on the goal line. However, FIFAs offside rule, law 11, states a player is offside if hes nearer to his opponents goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent. Because Carducci had come so far out to challenge the ball and, thus, became the second last defender, it left Henry in an offside position. The linesman was in no position to make the call, playing the defender, rather than Carducci, as the ‘last man or second last defender. Confusing, but completely understandable, why offside wasnt given. It will go down as a missed call by the letter of the law. That being said, it was the missed call on the Hagglund foul where the play should have been blown dead and that was the bigger injustice for me. 2) Oh Henry, again – Sloppy challenges by Henry continue to provide ample ammunition for his detractors. The Canadian international has all the physical attributes and intangibles hinting at sky-high potential. The 21-year-olds night wont be remembered for his goal, but instead a series of questionable tackles, playing his team into trouble. Henry simply needs to learn to stay on his feet in vulnerable areas. The timing, placement and manner of his challenges were front and centre on three separate occasions. Henry was fortunate not to be called for a penalty on a tight challenge on Manneh early in the first half. Early in the second half, he was cautioned for a diving challenge from behind, dangerously close to being inside the box. Henrys third mistake came in the 85th-minute, diving in from behind once again against Erik Hurtado, making for an easy penalty decision, leading to Vancouvers 2-1 goal. There was no arguing the decision and it was the third penalty Henry has conceded on the year. Far better is required, but Nelsen will continue to live and die with his young centre-back. He has far too much promise to sit on the bench. Nelsen, a former defender himself, needs to continue to preach patience and positioning with his young player. Maturity in these kinds of decisions will become more critical as the season wears on. 3) Midfield Meltdown – If youre a regular in this space, it will come as no surprise seeing criticism on Toronto FCs ability to hold on to the ball and build sustained attacking play. Toronto FCs midfield was overrun again this match with the Whitecaps having more than 55 per cent of possession. Its troubling how cheaply TFC gives the ball away, making it difficult for the midfield four, consistently falling too deep and not in position to support the forwards. The problem was further complicated Wednesday with more natural wing-players Rey and Jackson not in the team. It must be said that the team had better stretches late in the game with Daniel Lovitz, making his TFC debut, looking comfortable on the ball. Systematically, Nelsen may need to add an attacking midfielder, resorting to a 4-5-1, to provide more support and a player to link the attack. 4) Questioning Nelsen – It is remarkable how many TFC supporters are openly questioning the manager this early in the season. For a club with a history of being a conveyor belt for managers, youd think common sense would prevail in having some patience and seeing this process out before jumping to conclusions. Some are not convinced in Nelsens tactical approach. While its true the team isnt playing the free-flowing football many desire, it must be acknowledged a team with so many new players and a squad that has dealt with a number of early season injuries will take time develop said cohesiveness. Nelsens reluctance to move away from a preferred 4-4-2 has been decried by many, but that, too, is a work in progress. This is only Nelsens second season as a manager. Last years team was too short on talent to make any reasonable conclusion of Nelsens managerial abilities. What we do know is this team will fight and play for him. Nelsen is a players manager and is well liked within and around the room. His decision-making and adjustments certainly need work. It was peculiar that Hagglund started at right back when he is a preferred centre back and Bradley Orr started at centre back when he is a preferred right back. That being said, he has pulled the right strings earlier this season, namely in Columbus and Seattle, and continues to discover what he has and doesnt have. Time is required and a better evaluation will come months from now, not in May. This is a marathon, not a sprint. 5) Not-so Average Joe – Goalkeeper Joe Bendik was not overly impressed losing his starting job to Julio Cesar this season. With Cesar set to go on his World Cup adventure, Bendik was handed another start, in back-to-back games, and he didnt disappoint. Bendik came up big as the game opened up in the second half, coming off of his line multiple times, diving at the feet of an attacker and taking away goal-scoring opportunities. He kept them in the game when needed most, not to mention his penalty save. Goalkeeping is and will continue to be a position of strength for Toronto FC. The team has confidence in Bendik and will be comfortable with their “number two” while Cesar is on international duty. Its reassuring that Bendik has taken this short term setback in stride and looks to prove himself worthy as a starting goalkeeper in Major League Soccer. Toronto FC (3-0-4) welcomes the New York Red Bulls (3-5-3) to BMO Field Saturday at 430pm (TSN, TSN 1050 Radio). On Sunday night, they were able to deal a dose of frustration to the Chicago Blackhawks. Rinne made 29 saves for his first shutout in more than a year to lead Nashville to a 2-0 win over Chicago. Mike Fisher and Gabriel Bourque scored for the Predators, who won their second straight and improved to 3-1 against the Blackhawks this season. “You saw tonight exactly what Pekka Rinne can do for you,” Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. When hes healthy. Rinne, a two-time Vezina Trophy finalist had surgery on his left hip in May 2013 and recovered in time to play in nine of the Predators first 10 games to start the season. But an infection in the hip required him to undergo a second surgery and he missed 51 games. Rinne was sharp in his 31st career shutout, his first since March 12, 2013, as Chicago dominated territorially in the first two periods and outshot Nashville 29-17 for the game. “It feels good after tonights win,” Rinne said. “Against a top team like that, its going to get the best out of you and we showed that as team tonight.” Rinne has started nine of 11 games since returning in a 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh on March 4. But in three games before Sunday, he allowed 13 goals while taking two losses and a no-decision. “Obviously, I never thought it was going to be this kind of season,” Rinne said. “I put that behind me now and Im focusing on these last games we have left … and at the same time having a good summer and being ready to the next season.” The Predators are all but out of the playoff picture in the Western Conference. On Sunday, Nashville forced the Blackhawks to shoot from the perimeter and limited second and third chances as the game went on. “It started with us getting the shot from the outside that he can see and control,” defenceman Ryan Ellis said. “But hes one of the best in the league. He came out of the net and played (the puck) well and overall was just unreal tonight.” Chicago came out flying despite playing its second game without Patrick Kane, the teams leading scorer when he was injured against St. Louis on Wednesday. The star forward is on injured reserve with a lower-body injury and could miss the rest of the regular season. But once Nashville got a lead and as the game progressed, the Predators defence and Rinne took over. “We had a good start, had a couple great looks at the net, missed the net, missed the opportunities there.” Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "They scored first and it was the same, exact same as what hhappened the other day.dddddddddddd. “They get the lead, go into a checkfest, and they check well.” Chicago fell six points behind Western Conference and Central Division leader St. Louis, which defeated Pittsburgh 1-0 earlier on Sunday. The Blackhawks Corey Crawford made 15 saves. Predators defenceman Seth Jones suffered concussion-like symptoms didnt return for the second period. Hell be evaluated when the team returns to Nashville. Forward Patric Hornqvist, tied for second on the Predators with 38 points, missed the game and returned to Nashville to be with his wife following the birth of the couples first child. The Blackhawks outshot the Predators 11-6 in the first and dominated much of the period, but Nashville led 1-0 after 20 minutes. Fisher opened the scoring on a deflection with 1:22 remaining in the first when he slipped in unchecked from the left side of the net. Ellis shot through a screen from the right point, and Fisher jammed in front and tipped the puck past Crawford. The Blackhawks came out strong in the second, but Rinne stopped several close-in chances and limited rebounds to keep the Predators ahead. Bourque made it 2-0 with 2:25 left in the period on a rising shot from the left circle that sailed over Crawfords right shoulder as he dropped to the ice. In the third, Rinne came through when tested and managed the puck conservatively, often smothering it to eliminate Chicago rebounds and chances. Rinne stopped Niklas Hjalmarssons screened shot from the point in the final minute, then sprawled to stop Jonathan Toews rebound attempt from the side of the net. Notes: Trotz praised his teams defensive play, but singled out star defenceman Shea Weber who logged 34 minutes, 14 seconds. “Our defence, especially Weber, was an absolutely monster out there today,” Trotz said. "It was worth every penny watching him. Before the game, Quenneville said theres “a good chance” top prospect Teuvo Teravainen could make his NHL debut on Tuesday against Dallas. Teravainen, Chicagos first-round draft pick in 2012, joined the Blackhawks on Friday and has been skating with the team. … F Matt Carey, 22, signed by Chicago as a free agent on Thursday following one season at St. Lawrence University, also has joined the Blackhawks and could play down the stretch. … Chicago F Brandon Saad returned on Sunday after missing three games with an upper-body injury. F Bryan Bickell and D Michal Rozsival remained out. … Sitting out with injuries for Nashville were F Patrick Eaves and F Paul Gaustad. D Michael Del Zotto was a healthy scratch. LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Chicago Bears say they have agreed to a one-year contract with centre Roberto Garza. The Bears had expressed a desire to bring him back, and they announced the move on Thursday. Garza, who turns 35 in March, was the lone holdover on a line that featured four new starters last season. He has appeared in 194 games and made 164 starts over 13 seasons with the Bears and Atlanta Falcons. CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks are on top of their game and back on top of the NHL. That is almost satisfying to Chicago bench boss Joel Quenneville, who became the 10th NHL coach to earn 600 victories as the Blackhawks beat the Calgary Flames 4-2 on Sunday night for their fifth straight win. Marian Hossa had a goal and an assist, while Steve Montador, Niklas Hjalmarsson and Patrick Kane also scored for the Blackhawks, who got 22 saves from Ray Emery. Chicago vaulted past Minnesota into first place in the NHL standings with a league-leading 46 points. The Blackhawks improved to 7-0-1 in their last eight games. “We did some good things for the most part,” Quenneville said. "Our puck possession game has gotten better as weve gone along. “I dont think we should be satisfied … but weve gotten production from a lot of places.” Quenneville, who led the Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup title in 2010 — the franchises first championship since 1961 — is 162-81-32 with Chicago, the best winning percentage in team history. He took over five games into the 2008-09 season. Quenneville reached 600 wins in 1,113 games, the second fastest in league history. Scotty Bowman, a Blackhawks senior adviser, did it in 1,002 games. “Ive been fortunate in a lot of ways,” Quenneville said. “Im in a great spot here, very content, and Ive got a nice team to work with.” Quenneville received the game puck from team captain Jonathan Toews. “You dont get to that point without knowing a thing or two about hockey,” Toews said. “Hes done nothing but good things since hes come into this locker-room, for the guys in here.” The Blackhawks keep looking better. They havent lost in regulation since Nov. 29. “Were building our confidence every game,” Toews said. “The last couple of games, weve distanced ourselves a little bit.” Chicago built a 3-0 lead against the Flames and was in control throughout. Calgarys Olli Jokinen and Curtis Glencross scored power-play goals in the third period, and both had an assist. Miikka Kiprusoff made 21 saves. “I think we were just too easy on them in general,” Calgary forward Lee Stempniak said. “We needed to make them play in their end to force them out of their comfort zone, and we just didnt do it.” The Flames finished a four-game road trip at 0-2-2. The Blackhawks have won eight straight at home against Calgary, dating to a loss in March 2008. “Of the four games we had on the road, this was certainly the most disappointing effort,” Calgary coach Brent Sutter said. “You cant play that way against any team, let alone top teams, in the National Hockey League and think you have a chance to win.” Emery, who has taken over for struggling No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford, started and won for the fifth straight game. He is 9-1-2 overall, and has played in seven straight, including six starts. Crawford hasnt played since a start on Dec. 5 against Phoenix when he was pulled early in the second period after allowing three goals on 16 shots. Blackhawks defenceman Brent Seabrook sustained an undisclosed upper body injury late in the first period and didnt return. “He seemed not bad after the game,” Quenneville said. “It was precautionary.” Montador scored at 9:23 for the only goal in the first period. After the Blackhawks had controlled the puck in the Calgary zone for a nearly a minute, Montador fired in a low shot from the top of the right circle. With 4:35 left in the first, Seabrook was slammed headfirst into the glass from behind by Flames forward Rene Bourque, who received a major penalty for boarding and was ejected. He remained on the ice face down for a minute before he was helped up and skated to the bench on his own. The Blackhawks failed to capitalize on the ensuing power play. Hjalmarsson made it 2-0 at 5:15 of the second with his first goal of the season. He took a pass at the top of the slot and fired a shot through a screen in front of Kiprusoff. The puck hit traffic and curled slowly into the net. Kanes power-play goal with 5:05 left in the second extended Chicagos lead to 3-0. Kane moved in on right wing and beat Kiprusoff with a high screened shot from the slot. Jokinen cut it to 3-1 with a power-play goal at 2:35 of the third, but Hossa restored Chicagos three-goal edge during a 5-on-3 power play midway through the period. Glencross completed the scoring with a power-play goal with 3:35 left on a rebound of his own shot. NOTES: Hossa has six goals and six assists in his last seven games. … Chicagos Patrick Sharp had an assist to run his career-high point streak to nine games. … Flames C Matt Stajan left the game late in the second period with an ankle injury and didnt return. Chicago LW Dan Carcillo sat out a second game with an undisclosed upper-body injury. Both are day-to-day. Blackhawks LW Jeremy Morin played after being recalled from Rockford of the AHL earlier Sunday. Flames captain Jarome Iginla, who has 496 NHL goals, was held to one assist. Louis Blues will try to remain undefeated against the defending Stanley Cup champions this season when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks for Wednesdays Central Division showdown at United Center.NEW ORLEANS — Tony Parker was causing the Pelicans so much trouble with his dazzling dribble drives that New Orleans best defender, agile big man Anthony Davis, stepped out to challenge the shifty San Antonio point guard on the perimeter during the critical final five minutes. With a shoulder fake to his right and a cross-over dribble to the left, Parker wrong-footed Davis and exploded down an open lane for yet another easy layup. Parker scored 21 of his 32 points in the second half and also doled out nine assists, and the Spurs overcame a 14-point deficit en route to a 102-95 victory over the Pelicans on Monday night. “Tony pretty much carved them up,” said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, referring to Parker as “a monster” down the stretch. Tim Duncan scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half, and Marco Belinelli added 13 against his former club. Davis had 17 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks, Anthony Morrow added 20 points and Eric Gordon scored 19 for the Pelicans, who appeared in line for their fifth win in six games when they led by 14 near the end of the third quarter. The Spurs had other plans, outscoring New Orleans 38-19 in the final period. “Finally, in the fourth quarter, we were more physical and played better defence,” Parker said. “And we just know how to win. … In the fourth quarter, when its tight, we know how to execute and we know what we want to do on offence.” Duncan had a difficult first half, hitting only two of his first eight shots and even missing a dunk, but looked like his usual self when it mattered. He opened the third quarter by making 5 of 7 shots. Parker added 10 points in the quarter, and his scoop shot had San Antonio as close as 65-62 with 3:13 left in the period. But New Orleans regained its rhythm once more while the Spurs briefly came unhinged. Shortly after Morrows 3 made it 70-62, Parker and Duncan were called for technical fouls on the same offensive possession. Morrow made both free throws, then got fouled and made two more free throws, and New Orleans went back up by 14 on Greg Stiemsmas tip-in. San Antonio simply wouldnt go away, suffocating New Orleans shooters and forcing four turnovers in the first six minutes of the final quarter.dddddddddddd “We had some costly turnovers,” Pelicans coach Monty Williams said. “A number of our guys, you look at our numbers, we just did not shoot the ball well across the board, in the fourth quarter for sure.” The Pelicans has 16 turnovers in all, leading to 18 San Antonio points, and New Orleans made only 8 of 21 shots (38 per cent) in the final period. That, combined with Parkers clutch play, was too much to overcome. “Tony Parker got it going and we didnt corral him enough when he got in the paint,” Morrow said. “He just made more plays down the stretch.” The Spurs, meanwhile, took over the game with a 12-0 run that began when Patty Mills hit a 19-foot jumper and followed that with a 3. Then Danny Green, back from a broken left hand to play for the first time in 10 games, made his first shot — a 3-pointer — on his seventh attempt with 7:24 to go to pull the Spurs to 82-78. Parker completed the comeback a few plays later with his driving floater that tied it at 82 with 5:48 to go. “We played badly for 24-plus minutes — made a lot of mistakes and finally put a stretch together,” Duncan said. “We finally made some shots, honestly. We made, I think, two 3s in a row during the run that were big for us. We just needed something. We needed some kind of spark, some kind of stop-and-score. … We had a crew in there that did it well.” The Pelicans shot nearly 57 per cent in the first half (21 of 37) and led for most of it. Morrow made five of his first six shots and Gordon had 12 early points, including a 3 that put the Pelicans up 54-42 at halftime. NOTES: Green finished with 7 points in 30 minutes in what was his first action since Jan. 12. … Pelicans G Tyreke Evans played only five minutes, leaving the game for good shortly after hurting his right ribs in a collision with Matt Bonner. … The halftime performer, tight-rope artist Fletcher Runyan, drew empathetic groans from the crowd when he fell and straddled the rope. After sitting on the rope with a pained expression on his face for several seconds, he gingerly got back up, landed a successful backflip, then smiled and waved as he walked off the court to applause. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Boston Red Sox have put first baseman Mike Napoli on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained finger and recalled right-hander Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket. The moves were made before Sundays game against Tampa Bay. Napoli has been playing with an injured fourth finger on his left hand, along with nagging hamstring and calf issues. He also missed games Wednesday and Thursday due to flu-like symptoms. The decision on Napoli allows Boston to keep right-hander Alex Wilson on the roster to help a taxed bullpen. The Red Sox used seven relievers in Saturdays 6-5, 15-inning loss to Tampa Bay. Napoli is hitting .260 with five homers and 22 RBIs this season. He will return to Boston for further examination. Mike Carp will fill in at first base. “The fact is we needed to keep the added bullpen arm,” Boston manager John Farrell said. “Mike is still a few days away.” Workman was called up to start Sundays game with Rays in place of left-hander Felix Doubront, who is on the disabled list with a strained left shoulder. Workman made three relief appearances earlier this year before being optioned to Pawtucket on April 8. . Dennard, 24, reported to the Lancaster County Adult Detention Facility Saturday morning, according to corrections officers with the Lincoln facility who spoke on condition of anonymity because of jail policy. The former Nebraska football standout will have to serve at least 35 days, after credit for good behaviour and the three days hes already spent in jail. In April, a judge sentenced Dennard to two years probation, 30 days in jail and community service for assaulting an officer and resisting arrest outside a Lincoln bar days before he was choosen in the NFL Draft.dddddddddddd Dennard had been projected to be a middle-round NFL draft pick, but the Patriots took him in the seventh round. The judge later extended his probation to three years and doubled the jail time after Dennard was again arrested in Lincoln on suspicion of drunken driving in July. That charge was later dismissed in exchange for Dennards no contest plea for refusing to submit to a chemical test. He was fined $500 and placed on probation for that offence. Dennard finished this season, his second in the NFL, with 40 tackles (34 solo, 6 assists) and one interception. HOYLAKE, England – A year ago, Graham DeLaet arrived at the Open Championship wide-eyed and excited to play his first major. He made the cut and for a rookie, put in a decent effort. But since that time, the Canadian has played three more majors and missed the cut in all three. Add in a missed cut at The Players and theres a pattern starting to show. Those performances stand out from the rest of his otherwise strong record over the past year and DeLaet believes its likely all self-inflicted. “I think more than anything, its just getting used to playing in majors, just trying to treat them like a regular tournament,” he said after playing the first nine at Royal Liverpool on Tuesday. “I think in the past, I put too much pressure on myself and made them bigger than they are.” Who can blame him? The kid from Weyburn teed it up at Muirfield, Oak Hill, Augusta National and Pinehurst No. 2 in the last 12 months, a pretty solid slate. But now he realizes its time to perform in the majors, not just play in them and thats what hes hoping to do this week. He learned from last year at the Open, he said, and understands that links golf isnt always fair. “You have to really control where the ball is landing,” said DeLaet. "You can hit great shots that run, run, run, run right into a bunker. You just really have to be cognizant, thinking all the time about where your ball is going to land and where you look for it to finish. “Everything from 50 yards in front of the green is up to Mother Nature.” This years course at Liverpool is a far cry from last years baked out Muirfield course. That layout not only treated golf balls as if they were on airport tarmacs, but also didnt help DeLaets arm any. “I dont have to shallow my swing out because it took a toll on my hand and wrist last year. But theres a little bit of give in the turf; its not quite a fiery as last year. And with that the ball is not quite going crazy when it gets on the ground.” DeLaet arrives at Royal Liverpool off a T51 and a missed cut in his last two starts, the latter being the U.S. Open. He was so displeased with his showing of late that he cut off his infamous beard, hoping that might shake things up. He spent part of last week up in Ireland, playing at Doonbeg, Tralee and Lahinch to get immersed in the links feel and is hoping that will inspire him to bigger things this year. "I love it, DeLaet said of links golf. “Its such a cool place and this is such a great golf tournament as well. The fans are so respectful and its just an awesome event.” DeLaet understands that the task to success on this course may be somewhat simplistic, but thats what wins tournaments. “Just try to make a lot of pars and give yourself opportunities,” said DeLaet. “You cant really force anything in this style of golf. There are maybe a couple of different tee shots where you can get a little more aggressive but I think the main key is just keeping the ball in between the fescue and giving yourself a look on the green so Ill try to do that for 72 holes.” . No, it was something more basic. “I think we were mad,” Chambers said, emphasizing that his team had been thumped by Iowa and Nebraska in its previous two games. “It just happened to be Ohio State tonight. We came out and played desperate and with a sense of urgency. And we played angry.” D.J. Newbill scored 23 points, Tim Frazier added 16 and Penn State held off a late rally by No. 22 Ohio State for a 65-63 victory Thursday. The Buckeyes (22-7, 9-7 Big Ten) had a chance to win at the end. Coming out of a timeout with 6.8 seconds left, Lenzelle Smith Jr.s 3-pointer rimmed out. The Nittany Lions (14-14, 5-10) grabbed the rebound and time expired. Ohio State was led by LaQuinton Ross, who scored 19 points. Aaron Craft, plagued by foul trouble most of the game, added 10. “It was one of those games where two guys pound the ball off the backboard and it bounces out and they make a 3 on us,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. “Little things like that is kind of the way the game went.” Penn State swept the season series. The Nittany Lions upset then-No. 23 Ohio State 71-70 in overtime on Jan. 29 in Columbus. Nittany Lions forward Donovan Jack made a turnaround jumper, was fouled and hit the free throw to give Penn State a 60-55 lead with 1:59 to go. Ross and Craft each made a pair of free throws, sandwiched around two by Frazier, to pull the Buckeyes to 62-59 with just more than a minute to go. Frazier pushed Penn States lead to five with 39.4 seconds left with a pair of free throws. After Ross made two more free throws, Shannon Scott stole the inbounds paass and passed to Trey McDonald for a layup that cut it to 64-63.dddddddddddd Penn State missed two free throws on the ensuing possession, but Smiths shot caromed off the rim and over the backboard, giving the Nittany Lions the ball back with under 10 seconds left. Frazier was fouled and made one of two at the line, setting up Smiths last-second attempt from 3-point range. “When we executed what we were supposed to do, it was amazing what happened. We didnt have the flow that we normally do,” Matta said. “That was the difference. We talked about it and talked about it. We couldnt get it to where we needed it.” Frazier, a senior point guard, was recognized before the game as part of Senior Night festivities. He is one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, given annually to a student-athlete with notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. Frazier will leave Penn State as the schools career leader in assists. Frazier acknowledged that his uneven play early was due to the emotions and nerves of the night. “It was very emotional. I was basically trying to hold back tears in the beginning. Obviously you tell at the beginning of the game I had so many emotions running through me. Turnovers left and right. Airballs,” he said. Chambers was happy to see a player who has meant so much to the program get a win on such a special night. “Hes an amazing kid. A man now. Hes a man,” Chambers said. “Its Senior Night. Youve got family there. Youve got one game left in this building. Youve been here five years. Youve invested time and energy. He puts so much into this program. You cant blame the guy for being jacked up. I was happy to see us get a win for him.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

Manchester Uniteds already arduous season just got tougher. The English champions were drawn Friday to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals, pitting them against the defending champions and the favourites. “I was thrilled that we were in the draw. In a lot of ways, it didnt matter who we drew,” said Manchester United manager David Moyes, who has led United into the quarterfinals for the first time since reaching the 2011 final. “But we have pulled out the favourites.” In the other quarterfinal pairings, Real Madrid will face Borussia Dortmund in a rematch of last years semifinals, Spanish clubs Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will meet for a spot in the next round, and Paris Saint-German will take on 2012 champion Chelsea. United and Barcelona will host the opening two matches on April 1, while Madrid and PSG are at home for their first legs on April 2. The return legs will be played on April 8-9. Five-time champion Bayern will be looking to heap even more pressure on Moyes. United is a disappointing seventh in the Premier League and likely needs to win the Champions League to qualify for next seasons competition. “Perhaps they are not in the best form, but they are still a top team,” said Bayern winger Arjen Robben, who scored a late goal to eliminate United from the competition at the same stage four years ago. “Its a good draw, we play away first.” Bayern, meanwhile, is unbeaten in 50 Bundesliga games under coach Pep Guardiola and leads second-place Dortmund by 23 points. Dortmund beat Madrid in the semifinals last year before losing to Bayern in the final at Wembley Stadium. But Madrid is unbeaten in 31 games in all competitions, and Cristiano Ronaldo leads the Champions League with 13 goals this season. “When you repeatedly make the last eight you have to count on meeting one team often,” Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. “It could be an advantage that we first play in Madrid. Its no time to raise the white flag yet.” Three Spanish clubs reached the quarterfinals and at least one is guaranteed to play in the semifinals. Although four-time champion Barcelona has excelled in the Champions League, the Spanish champions have had an irregular season at home and have yet to beat Atletico in three games - all draws. “Being an opponent we know can be helpful or not. There wont be any surprises,” Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes said. “They are a tough rival. We cant allow any goals at home.” For Chelsea, coach Jose Mourinho will need to come up with a strategy to stop Zlatan Ibrahimovic when the English leaders travel across the channel to face French champion PSG in the first leg. Mourinho led Chelsea against PSG in the tournaments group stage in 2004-05, when the Blues won 3-0 in Paris before a scoreless draw at home. Jason Dickinsons goal 57 seconds into overtime gave the Storm a 3-2 win over the North Bay Battalion on Thursday for a 1-0 series lead. But Walker was far from happy with his teams performance. “To be honest with you, we have to play better,” Walker said. "We have to focus on winning our battles, skating more and we cant take for granted that were here. They (the Battalion) earned their spot and we earned our spot. We have to start skating and start playing. “We did it in the first and then it was like we werent satisfied. There was something more out there, something better. There isnt anything better than what we were doing in the first.” The first period was all Guelph, as they outshot the Battalion 16-6 and beat them to pucks right from the opening faceoff. Holding the leagues most potent offence scoreless in the first period seemed to give North Bay more confidence as the game went on. Battalion head coach Stan Butler was happy with the way his team matched up against the heavily favoured Storm. “I thought we played hard and it was a pretty even game. Once you get in overtime, one shot and its done,” Butler said. "They have a great team and thats the style we have to play. We have to play hard, we have to check up ice, track the puck hard and not give them time and space. “If we sit back and watch like we did in the first period and allow them time and space, theyll do serious damage.” The Battalion benefited from the scoreless opening 20 minutes by taking iit to the Storm in the second.dddddddddddd They were rewarded early when Ben Thomson, on a power play, snapped a fat rebound past goalie Justin Nichols, who made 32 saves on the night, for a 1-0 lead at 3:06. But Guelphs Brock McGinn evened the scored a minute later. North Bay continued to play a tough defensive game, holding the Storm to just seven shots in the second period. The Battalion regained the lead 3:35 into the third, as Jamie Lewis wrist shot from the faceoff circle found the top corner past Nichols. But Guelph made the most of the few scoring chances it had, and came back to tie the game once again on its second shot of the third period. Robby Fabbri found Mitchell cruising over the blue-line and he ripped a wrist shot over Smith for his 11th goal of the playoffs at 12:23. With the goal, Mitchell moved ahead of teammate Kerby Rychel, into first place in playoff points with 24. Guelph ended the game on its first shot of the extra period, with Dickinson wristing a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle over Smiths glove for his sixth goal of the playoffs. Smith made 27 saves. Guelph finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play, while North Bay was 1-for-2 with the man advantage. North Bay captain Barclay Goodrow said the Battalion are looking forward to stepping back on the ice in less than 24 hours for a chance at evening the series before heading home for Game 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday. “I think the advantage of playing back-to-back is you can get right back at it and you dont lose too much of the momentum you gained from the game before. Hopefully, we come out tomorrow and forget what happened tonight and keep on going.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’

LOS ANGELES — Dodgers manager Don Mattingly is going to have a difficult time keeping all five of his outfielders happy, because four of them are regulars. And the way Carl Crawford has been hitting lately, it isnt likely hell get a day off anytime soon. Crawford hit an RBI double in the 10th inning, lifting Los Angeles to a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. Joba Chamberlain (0-1) struck out the side in the ninth for Detroit, but walked pinch-hitter Chone Figgins to open the 10th and was replaced by Phil Coke. Dee Gordon popped out to first baseman Victor Martinez on an attempted sacrifice bunt, but Figgins scampered home when Crawford lined a 2-0 pitch past left fielder Rajai Davis. “I was just trying to stay short and take it the other way,” Crawford said. “Once it got past the outfielder, I knew Chone was fast enough to score.” The Tigers were down to their final out in the ninth when Victor Martinez got Max Scherzer off the hook with an RBI single against Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen — who had just struck out two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera — to make it 2-all. Ian Kinsler started the rally with a leadoff double. J.P. Howell (1-0) pitched a perfect 10th. Austin Jackson homered for the Tigers in an interleague matchup between division winners from last season. Gordon led off the first with a homer against Scherzer, and Justin Turner had a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Scherzer allowed two runs and eight hits over seven innings and struck out eight, after throwing eight scoreless innings of four-hit ball last Wednesday in another no-decision against Kansas City at Comerica Park. “I can only control what I can control,” Scherzer said. “The win-loss thing is a fluke. All last year, I said: Im 21-3 because I had a good offence behind me. But Im sure those guys will pick it up and theyll score 10 more runs for me.” Matt Kemp, who hit his first two homers of the season in Sundays win over the Giants, was 0 for 2 against Scherzer and is hitless in 18 career at-bats against him. “Hes a great hitter, so youve got to be aggressive right back at him,” Scherzer said. “Youve got to go up there with a plan, just kind of feel what kind of pitches are working in a particular at-bat and keep attacking.” The Tigers got a scare in the second when 38-year-old Torii Hunter tried to make a sliding catch of a foul ball by Tim Federowicz down the right field line and jammed his left knee as the ball landed in the seats. “It was a tough play,” Hunter said. “Its weird over there, because you have the foul line right next to the wall. But you dont want to give up on the ball because it might stay fair. So you use whatever manoeuvr you can come up with and try to keep the ball from bouncing on that line.” The nine-time Gold Glove winner, who homered in each of his previous three games, remained down for several minutes while a trainer looked him over and flexed the knee. Hunter gingerly went back to his position, but left the game when his teammates took the field in the fifth. The Tigers called the injury a bruise. “The style that I play, I play rough. I try to get everything. Its just my instincts. I cant help it,” Hunter said. “Unfortunately, Ive got a swollen knee because of it. We iced it three times just to get the swelling down. My wrist is jammed up and my shoulders a little sore. But its not going to keep me out — hopefully not at all, and Ill be ready to go tomorrow.” Dan Haren pitched six innings and allowed three hits, including Jacksons homer in the second. Alex Avila followed with a single, Detroits last hit until Ian Kinslers double in the ninth. The injuries kept mounting for the Dodgers, who just got Kemp off the disabled list Friday and are expecting to activate right-hander Josh Beckett to start Wednesday night. Catcher A.J. Ellis joined Clayton Kershaw, setup man Brian Wilson and Chad Billingsley on the DL, and right fielder Yasiel Puig sat out his second game because of a swollen left thumb. NOTES: Don Kelly replaced Hunter in right field. … Ellis had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus, and is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks. Federowicz was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque. . Memphis pulled away late in the first half, closing on an 18-7 run that gave the Grizzlies a 10-point lead at the break. They totally blew it open in the third quarter after Atlanta missed its first seven shots and turned it over three times. The Hawks were coming off a 4-1 road trip that left them tied with Miami for the Southeast Division lead. But they looked exhausted in their return to Philips Arena, putting up ugly jumpers, playing pedestrian defence and struggling just to hang on to the ball. Gay and the Grizzlies took advantage, running the court with abandon and slamming down several thunderous dunks. The sparse crowd at Philips Arena began booing in the third quarter, then mostly headed for home early in the fourth as Memphis stretched the lead as high as 30 points. Tony Allen and O.J. Mayo scored 18 apiece for Memphis, while Mike Conley had 15. Marc Gasol turned in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Dante Cunningham chipped in with 10 rebounds off the bench. Josh Smith led the Hawks with 11 points, playing only 19 minutes. Both teams cleared their benches in the final minutes and the only thing the Hawks could take solace in was avoiding their worst loss of the season, which remains a 22-point defeat at San Antonio. The Hawks got an omen of things to come when backup centre Jason&nbssp;Collins tumbled to the court chasing a loose ball late in the first quarter.dddddddddddd. His left arm was pinned under Cunningham, leaving the 7-footer writhing on the court with a sprained elbow that finished him off for the night. The Hawks were already shorthanded in the middle with Al Horford recovering from surgery for a torn pectoral muscle that will keep him out for most, if not all, of the regular season. Atlanta was up 36-35 with 5 minutes left in the opening half. Thats when the game turned Memphis way. Mayo knocked down a jumper, Gasol hit a turnaround hook and Allen laid it in off a nifty pass from Gay. After Jeff Teague missed a jumper, Gay broke ahead of the pack, took a pass from Conley and jammed it down. Then Mayo stole the ball from Joe Johnson, feeding Allen for another layup. The Hawks got a bit of a spark when Marvin Williams swished a 3-pointer, but Allen matched it with a 3 of his own just ahead of the buzzer, sending the Grizzlies sprinting to the locker room up 53-43. Atlanta never got closer. Joe Johnson was smothered by the Grizzlies and finished with 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting. Ivan Johnson, also with 10, was the only other Hawks player in double figures. Notes: The Grizzlies had 58 points in the lane, matching the most allowed by the Hawks this season. They also surrendered 58 in a Jan. 5 game against Miami. … Gay had three steals and became Memphis career leader in that category. … Memphis outrebounded the Hawks 49-36. CALGARY - One person has been hurt and a horse has died during separate chuckwagon training exercises at the Calgary Stampede. The Stampede says driver Tim Haroldson was a passenger on a wagon driven by fellow driver Jerry Bremner. The wagon rolled while coming around one of the barrels during this mornings training, and Haroldson was thrown. He was taken to hospital for evaluation and treatment. Bremner was not injured. In a separate incident, a 12-year-old horse belonging to the team of Reg Johnstone collapsed after completing a run. No other horses were injured. “We are hoping for the best for Tim,” Paul Rosenberg, vice-president programming at the Calgary Stampede, said in a news release. The Stampede is reviewing the circumstances of the crash to determine what happened. Initial indications are that there was nothing out of the ordinary with the wagon, the horses or the tack. The Stampede says the horse that died, which was named Denny, had last raced about a week ago at the Ponoka Stampede. . TORONTO — After taking a sip of water at the start of his news conference, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis made sure to thank the players who were around last season and left on the first day of free agency. “I just wanted to thank them for what they attempted to do over the last 12 months and wish them all the best going forward,” Nonis said. Attempted might be the most important word after the Leafs went from being almost surely playoff bound to collapsing with an eight-game losing streak. Gone from that group are centres Dave Bolland and Mason Raymond, who signed elsewhere Tuesday. In come defenceman Stephane Robidas, signed to a US$9-million, three-year deal, and forward Leo Komarov, signed to an $11.8-million, four-year deal, along with forward Matt Frattin, re-acquired in a trade that sent winger Jerry DAmigo to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Its Noniss hope that those players change the Leafs mix back to more of what it was like in the lockout-shortened 2013 season, when they made the playoffs. “The compete level that we had two years ago, I think was at or near the top of the league,” Nonis said. “We got more out of our players, the coaches did, the players themselves did in terms of pushing each other, than we did last year — no question about it. Some of the players that were talking about either were here and will help us get that back or have a history of doing that. That was a focus for us.” Robidas at 37 brings 885 games of experience to Toronto, along with a right-handed shot. He broke his leg while playing in the playoffs for the Anaheim Ducks but started skating last week and expects to be ready for Day 1 of training camp. Komarov returns from the 2013 Leafs after a year with Dynamo Moscow of the KHL. He had four goals and five assists in 42 games that season, but the 27-year-old Finn is expected to have a much bigger role this time around. “Leo offers a lot more than I think even we got out of him two years ago,” said Nonis, who met with Komarov in Finland and “laid that out so that he knew that he wasnt just a fourth-line guy that was playing six minutes a night, that we feel that he can do more.” Komarovs return could help fill the void left by the departure of Bolland, who signed for five years and $27.5 million with the Florida Panthers. Bolland said on a conference call with local media that the Leafs were close to bringing him back. “We were getting there,” the 28-year-old Toronto native said. “We were just a little bit apart.” Nonis did not begrudge Bolland for taking the more lucrative deal with the Panthers. “We feel our offer was very fair, very strong, it reflected his value to us,” he said. “He chose to go somewhere else, thats his right. Hell be a good player for them … The only way to prevent that from happening was to spend more than we felt was appropriate, and I dont think thats something we wanted to get into.” Raymond also got more money than the Leafs were willing to pay: three years and $9.5 million from the Calgary Flames. Being closer to home was part of the Cochrane, Alta., natives decision to go there. Even before signing in Calgary, Raymond expected changes around the Leafs under new president Brendan Shanahan and after the teams late-season collapse. “I think we all wouldve loved to finish a lot better,” Raymond said in a phone interview. “When you have new management or different changes within the organization, that (roster moves are) susceptible to happen.” What Bolland and Raymond have in common is they werent around for the Leafs somewhat-expected 2013 season that Nonis seems to want to replicate. Komarov and Frattin, who was sent to Los Angeles a year ago in the deal that brought goaltender Jonathan Bernier to the Leafs, were. “We talked a little about the chemistry that we had two years ago and the work ethic and i think players playing outside their comfort zone,” Nonis said. “Those are two players that played a big part in it.” Notes — Nonis said if a trade for restricted-free-agent goaltender James Reimer was there and made sense, the Leafs would make it. Otherwise, he reiterated, Reimer could be back next season. … The process of hiring assistant coaches is still ongoing with no resolution as of Tuesday. COLUMBUS, Georgia – Shannon Szabados made 27 saves in her mens professional hockey league debut Saturday, although her Columbus Cottonmouths fell 4-3 to the Knoxville Ice Bears. Szabados joined the Southern Professional Hockey League team last week. The 27-year-old goaltender from Edmonton backstopped the Canadian womens hockey team to Olympic gold Feb. 20. Columbus led 2-1 after the opening period, but Knoxville scored three unanswered goals in the second before the Cottonmouths scored again in the third. “It was fun,” Szabados told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. “I saw a few Szabados shirts out there. It was definitely a great moment.” Szabados made 27 saves in Canadas 3-2 thrilling overtime win over the U.S. to defend the gold in Sochi. She posted a 28-save shutout over the Americans in the womens Olympic hockey final in 2010. Szabados has spent much of her career in mens leagues. She played for Sherwood Park, Bonneyville and Fort Saskatchewan during her four years in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. She then spent five years in Alberta mens college hockey with Grant MacEwen and then NAIT. Saturdays game was her first since the Olympic womens final, although she practised with the NHLs Edmonton Oilers when they were short a backup goaltender March 5. No woman has ever played in an NHL regular-season game. Goaltender Manon Rheaume became the first to play in an exhibition game with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992. Canadian womens hockey team forward star Hayley Wickenheiser has played in mens leagues in Finland and Sweden during her career. Then they got his signature. James signed a two-year, $42.1 million contract with the Cavs on Saturday, a day after he announced he was returning to play in Cleveland and try to end the citys 50-year championship drought. The deal provides flexibility for the NBAs biggest star with the leagues maximum salary expected to rise in the future. A person familiar with the negotiations said James contract includes an option for the four-time league MVP to become a free agent next summer. However, it is strictly “a business deal,” according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team is not providing any details about the agreement. By only signing for two years, James can get another contract with the Cavs before the 2016-17 season, when a new television deal is expected to push the maximum salary higher. The max contract for next season is $20.7 million. Until this deal, James had never been the highest paid player on his team in 11 seasons as a pro. The Cavs did not provide any terms of the contract in a release, citing league policy. James announced he was returning to the Cavaliers on Friday, picking Cleveland over Miami and reversing the decision he made four years ago to sign as a free agent with the Heat. In an essay in Sports Illustrated, James indicated he will finish his career in Cleveland, and the Cavaliers are confident the Akron, Ohio, native is committed to them long-term. “We could not be happier to welcome LeBron James home,” Cavaliers general manager David Griffin said. “Yesterday, LeBron, through his essay, told us he wasnt going anywhere except Cleveland and that Cleveland is where he always believed he would finish his career. TThese words and commitment put all of us, including LeBron, in the best position to build our franchise the right way and achieve the kind of goals we all know are possible.dddddddddddd Expectations will be at the highest levels but no one should expect immediate and automatic success.” ESPN.com first reported the contract terms for James. His decision to come back to his native Ohio was universally applauded. In the powerful essay on SI.com, the 29-year-old laid out his reasons for returning and said his relationship with Northeast Ohio “is bigger than basketball. I didnt realize that four years ago. I do now.” Griffin echoed those sentiments. “LeBrons motivation to return home is clearly fueled by the kind of emotions and ideals that we can and should embrace,” he said. "The contract and those details are secondary to his commitment to Northeast Ohio and the Cavaliers. It extends well beyond the boundaries of basketball and speak to his love and passion for his family, home, and our fans. He communicated his role and growth as a husband, father, teammate, community leader, and business person. “This resonated in a special and personal way for all of us. LeBron put it well when he stated; In Northeast Ohio, nothing is given. Everything is earned. We cant wait to get started and look forward to his leadership, on and off the court, for many years to come.” James spent his first seven seasons in the NBA with the Cavs, taking them to their first finals appearance in 2007. James is already the franchise leader in scoring (15,251 points), scoring average (27.8 PPG) field goals ((5,415), free throws made (3,650), steals (955) and minutes (22,119). James is in Brazil to watch Sundays World Cup final between Argentina and Germany. To get another chance late in the game and come through like that definitely helped.” The Cubs finished with 15 hits after managing just five runs and 12 hits in the first three games against the White Sox. “We did more damage than them today,” Rizzo said. Alexei Ramirez had four singles for the White Sox, who had won four in a row. Conor Gillaspie went 2 for 4 with a walk in his first action since he was activated from the disabled list Wednesday after being sidelined with a bruised left hand. The White Sox got Adam Dunn back after he missed a game due to a bruised right calf, but rookie slugger Jose Abreu was hampered by a left ankle injury. Abreu, who is off to a terrific start with 12 homers and 35 RBIs, hobbled down the line each time he put the ball in play. “He just seemed like he was limping a little bit tonight, thats why in the end there I (took) him out,” said manager Robin Ventura, who had Marcus Semien hit for Abreu in the ninth.dddddddddddd"But he says hes fine." Abreu did not speak with the media after the game. The Cubs jumped on Scott Carroll (1-2) for four runs in the third, sending 10 batters to the plate. Luis Valbuena singled in Kalish before Rizzo hit a drive to centre for his seventh homer. Lake added a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-2. Rizzo also walked and scored when Castro connected in the fourth. Castro went 1 for 15 with two walks during the Cubs losing streak. Carroll departed after Olt and Lake started the fifth with consecutive singles. The 29-year-old rookie was charged with 11 hits and six runs after he pitched well in each of his first two major league starts. “It was just a situation where I didnt have my best stuff tonight,” Carroll said. “I left a few pitches up when I obviously didnt have the ability to do so. Kind of just fighting it the whole time.” The White Sox got two runs back in the fourth on RBI singles by Gillaspie and Tyler Flowers. But five Cubs relievers combined for five innings of one-run ball after Jake Arrietas shaky outing. Brian Schlitter (2-0) got five outs for the win. Arrieta allowed four runs, three earned, and nine hits in four innings. He pitched 5 1-3 scoreless innings in a no-decision against St. Louis on Saturday in his first start of the season. NOTES: White Sox ace Chris Sale (left arm) felt fine after throwing a bullpen session Wednesday, and Ventura said the left-hander probably will throw again on Saturday. “Hes progressing. He doesnt feel anything,” Ventura said. “In talking to him, he says everything feels good.” Ventura said he thinks the team will have a better idea this weekend about a rehab schedule for Sale. … Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said Jeff Samardzijas 126 pitches on Monday night “is just a story that should probably die.” He said the front office, Renteria and Samardzija are all on the same page. … The Cubs send RHP Jason Hammel (4-1, 2.43 ERA) to the mound when they open a weekend series at Atlanta on Friday night. RHP Julio Teheran (2-2, 1.80 ERA) is slated to pitch for the Braves. WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State went to the Final Four last year, yet there was something missing for that team: a Missouri Valley Conference championship. This season the Shockers were focused on not letting that happen. So after No. 3 Wichita State routed Drake 83-54 Saturday night behind Tekele Cottons 21 points and Darius Carters 15, the Shockers relished cutting down the nets to celebrate a conference title that seemed like a foregone conclusion some time ago. “It means a lot, it really does,” said point guard Fred VanVleet, who had 15 points and six assists. “Its something we didnt do last year. Its special, and we appreciate it. But, at the same time, we have more goals ahead of us.” Wichita State (29-0, 16-0 Missouri Valley) is the first team to start 29-0 since Illinois in 2004-05 and is two wins away from a perfect regular season. The Shockers cruised despite leading scorer Cleanthony Early being held to a season-low three points and Ron Baker only scoring six, less than half his season average. Daddy Ugbede scored 14 points, Jordan Daniels had 13 and Aaron Hawley 10 for Drake (14-14, 5-11), which had more turnovers (20) than field goals (18). Drake coach Ray Giacoletti can compare this seasons Wichita State team to that of a year ago. He was an assistant at Gonzaga last season, and the top-seeded Bulldogs lost to the Shockers in the NCAA Tournament. “Its a much better basketball team now than it was at that time,” Giacoletti said. “Ive been doing this 29 years and have been around a lot of great teams that try to outscore you and out-talent you. This team tries to out-tough you in every single facet and really doesnt care about the other stuff.” That toughness was flaunted in a 31-4 run Wichita State wrapped around halftime, an onslaught so complete that the Shockers completed the 14-1 portion to start the second half without Drake even attempting a field goal. After trailing early, the Bulldogs held the Shockers scoreless for over 3 minutes, going on a 9-0 run capped by Hawleys backdoor layup for a 15-14 lead with 9:18 remaining in the first half. To make matters worse for Wichita State, Early was on the bench with two fouls and Baker soon joined him with his second. But Wichita State started the game-turning run behind Carter, a reserve who scored four straight before the Shockers started a parade of baskets at the rim. “I thought Darius gave us a huge lift tonight,” Shockers coach Gregg Marshall said. “He was really active.” VanVleet and Cotton had layups. Cotton and Nick Wiggins had back-to-back slams. VanVleets 3-pointer helped Wichita State lead 31-18 at halftime. The Shockers roll only gained momentum to start the second half. After Drakes Seth VanDeest made a free throw, Wichita State scored 14 straight. Cotton and Carter converted three-point plays to get it started and Carter had another slam. And Kadeem Coleby and VanVleet put back offensive rebounds, bringing roars from the crowd. The Shockers led 45-19 with 16:35 remaining, and Drake seemed befuddled. Much of that had to do with Cotton, who had seven steals in the game. “Was there two Tekele Cottons out there?” Marshall asked, joking. “It sure seemed like it.” Cotton said his approach was simple. “I just try to get in position where they dont see me,” he said. “Sometimes I can get in the passing lanes and get it. Sometimes, I dont.” Hawley ended the run with a 3-pointer 15 seconds later, the Bulldogs first shot attempt of the half. After that, the Shockers could sub liberally and soon start celebrating an outright Missouri Valley title, actually clinched earlier in the day when Indiana State lost. “Hopefully,” Marshall said, “this isnt our only championship.” . The Oilers have been idle since a 2-1 overtime setback to the Calgary Flames on Saturday. Edmonton salvaged a point and prevented a shutout loss of its own when Taylor Hall scored with 10.3 seconds left in regulation. Devan Dubnyk was solid with 25 saves before giving up the winning tally 3:14 into overtime. Edmonton, which was coming off an 8-2 win over Colorado, fell to 1-1-1 on a five-game homestand. The Oilers and Canes have split their last six meetings in Edmonton. Carolina picked up a 5-3 victory in the most recent encounter there on Dec. 7, 2011, its second straight win in the series. Dubnyk is 0-1-0 with a 4.34 GAA in two previous meetings with the Hurricanes, including one start. The Hurricanes opened up a four-game swing on Monday night in Vancouver and were blanked 2-0 by the Canucks and backup goaltender Eddie Lack, who made 31 saves in his first career shutout. Carolina backup Justin Peters gave up onne goal and finished with 24 saves for the Hurricanes, who had a season-high, three-game win streak snapped.dddddddddddd “I think as a team we deserved a better fate,” said Peters. “We played the right way, we had some chances. Just give credit to their team and Lack was playing well.” Carolina was shut out for the second time this season and for the first time since a 3-0 setback at home to Tampa Bay on Nov. 1. The zero-goal effort came on the same day that Canes forward Jeff Skinner was named the NHLs First Star for last week. Skinner was coming off a week-long span in which he led the league with five goals and added an assist. No. 1 netminder Cam Ward should get the start tonight for the Hurricanes and is 3-3-0 with a 2.53 goals against average in six previous meetings. “It was nice to score that goal late. It was a huge rush and a boost for the team to send it into overtime,” said Hall, who was named the leagues Second Star for last week on Monday after notching four goals and two assists. TORONTO – In a match-up between first and worst, the unexpected Atlantic Division-leading Raptors (6-7) host the disappointing Brooklyn Nets (3-10) at the Air Canada Centre tonight. Watch the action live on TSN and listen on TSN 1050 Radio beginning at 7pm et/4pm pt. The Raptors maintained their spot atop the Atlantic Friday after defeating the Wizards, 96-88, for their second win in a row. Meanwhile, the Nets have been the NBAs biggest early-season surprise, coming into Tuesdays contest losers of five straight. After trading for future hall of famers Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in the summer, the Nets – who are due to spend $190 million this season on salaries and luxury tax, an NBA-record payroll – were the obvious favourites in the division. Instead, theyve struggled out of the gate and are just 1-7, allowing 104.8 points per game on the road prior to visiting Toronto. “Believe me, Brooklyns going to be okay,” head coach Dwane Casey insisted. “Theyre going to bounce back. Theyre playing with injuries right now.” “I just hope and pray they dont get it together [against us].” Whats the importance of being an early-season division leader? TSN 1050s Josh Lewenberg and Duane Watson weigh in and preview Tuesdays meeting with the Nets on this weeks Raptors Report podcast. Deron Williams and Brook Lopez have been ruled out for Brooklyn, as both remain out with left ankle sprains. Williams has sat out four of the last five games while Lopez will miss his sixth straight. With the Nets all-stars sidelined, their new additions have struggled to pick up the slack. Pierce is scoring 13.0 points per contest on 38 per cent shooting and Garnett is averaging 6.5 points, connecting on 35 per cent of his field goal attempts, all career lows. “Theyve just started slow,” said Rudy Gay, who has been battling a bout of the flu thats been going around the Raptors locker room. “I know theyll pick it up, we just have to take care of them before they do.” Torontos offence continues to evolve after getting off to rough start. The Raptors averaged 92.3 points in their first six games of the season but have scored 102.3 per contest since. They have recorded 20 or more assists in back-to-back games after accomplishing that feat just once in their first 11. “Were playing harder than our opponents,” Gay said. “And no matter what shots go in, what plays work or not, not matter what they do, we play hard.” Trends and Tidbits The Nets were victorious in three of four meetings with the Raptors last season but have lost six of their past eight visits to Toronto. Toronto has won consecutive games during the month of November for the first time since 2010, when they team had a four-game winning streak. Combined, the Atlantic Division has a record of 24-46. What to Watch For Control the pace For the most part the Nets have been at the mercy of their opposition. Last in the league in defensive efficiency and fast-break scoring, Brooklyn has been unable to impose their will on either end of the floor. They have been especially ineffective without their starting centre. The Nets have allowed over 113 points per 100 possessions in the five games Lopez has missed, according to NBA.com, and have allowed just 98.7 in the 244 minutes he has played. Who comes to play in the third? The Nets and the Raptors are two of the NBAs three worst third-quarter teams, in terms of point differential. Brooklyn has been outscored by a league-most 67 points in the third frame so far this season, while the Raptors – who have been a net positive in each of the other three quarters – are a minus-44 after the halftime break. “Weve got to meditate,” DeMar DeRozan joked, searching for answers to solve his teams third-quarter dilemma. “Whatever weve got to do at halftime, weve got to do it. Weve got to understand thats a critical point of the game.” Toronto has turned the ball over 59 times in the third and are allowing opponents to shoot 52 per cent. The Raptors were outscored 32-15 in the period before going on a fourth-quarter run during Fridays win, however the Nets were bested 34-15 after the break, which sealed their fate in Sundays 109-97 loss to Detroit. Who to Watch For DeMar DeRozan Quietly, DeRozan has bounced back after a slow start to the season and is playing some of the best basketball of his career. After shooting 6-of-25 in a double overtime loss to Houston, the Raptors guard is averaging 26.8 points, shooting 51 per cent from the field and 9-of-19 from three-point range in five games, three of which his team has won. DeRozan tweaked an ankle twice in Fridays win over Washington but has been practicing in full and insists it wont be a problem for him going forward. Joe Johnson With Williams and Lopez sidelined and Pierce and Garnett struggling, Johnson has become the focal point of Brooklyns offence. The Nets guard is coming off his best game of the season, scoring 34 points in Sundays loss. Johnsons three-point shooting has been one of the lone bright spots for Brooklyn early in the year. He was 8-for-10 against Detroit and is now shooting 46 per cent from long distance on the season. Injury Report Gay, Amir Johnson and Tyler Hansbrough all participated in shoot around despite battling bouts of the flu. Theyre all expected to play Tuesday. Williams and Lopez have been ruled out for the Nets, still nursing sprained ankles. Jason Terry (knee) and Andrei Kirilenko (back) havent been practicing and are unlikely to be available against the Raptors. Two popouts later, the inning was over with no damage done, and the Washington Nationals scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins.CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Celtics coach Brad Stevens said he could sense the frustration in Gerald Wallaces voice when the two spoke on Sunday. The 31-year-old Wallace wasnt pleased with the Celtics losing six of their past seven and was eager to help the team get things headed in the right direction. “I could sense that he was going to be focused and ready,” Stevens said. “Hes such a competitive guy.” Wallace led a productive night for Bostons reserves with a season-high 17 points, Jordan Crawford had 21 points and the Celtics defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 96-86 Monday night for their second straight victory since ending a six-game losing streak. “I had a talk with coach and the main thing he wanted me to do was to play the way I know how to play,” Wallace said. “He told me not to try to figure out how to fit in or what to do, just go out and play basketball the way I know how to play basketball. … I just wanted to go out there and be aggressive and play the way I know how to play.” Said Stevens: “The effort was good and (Wallace) was a big part of that. Hes contagious in the way he plays. When he plays like that, it makes it easier to follow. Were kind of finding our way back to that Jeff (Green) and Gerald lineup more and more.” For most of the game he looked like the Wallace of old, spinning and twisting his way to the basket, getting good shots and drawing contact. Crawford said Wallace gives the team “everything we need” to be successful. “He can check the best player, he can rebound, he can pass and he can score,” Crawford said. Bostons reserves outscored Charlottes bench players 39-15. The Celtics got 11 points from reserve Courtney Lee and a career-high eight assists from Phil Pressey. “The bench play was the difference in the game,” Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said. Crawford was 5 of 11 from the field and had five assists as the Celtics avenged an 89-83 loss to the Bobcats on Nov. 13. Wallace, who played for the Bobcats from 2004-11, was 6 of 10 from the field. Kemba Walker had 28 points and Gerald Henderson had 20 to leead the Bobcats (7-8), who were hoping to get above the .dddddddddddd500 mark after 15 games for the first time in franchise history. Charlotte cut Bostons lead to 68-66 entering the fourth quarter, but the Celtics got a 3-pointer from Lee and a layup by Kris Humphries off a pick and roll to score 10 straight points. The Bobcats would trim the lead to six with 1:25 remaining in the game before the Celtics got an offensive rebound off a missed shot and Crawford hit a pair of free throws to make it a three-possession game with 34 seconds remaining. The Celtics came in looking to avenge a loss two weeks ago to the Bobcats that started their six-game losing skid. Boston started slow Wednesday, falling behind 20-10 but took a 47-38 lead into halftime after outscoring the Bobcats 33-17 in the second quarter. The Celtics came alive behind the outside shooting of Crawford, who knocked down three 3-pointers and led all scorers at the break with 12 points and strong play from the bench. “We came out the start of the second quarter and had nothing,” Clifford said. “The same thing happened at the start of the fourth.” Charlottes struggles continue at home, where they have lost five of their last six. The Bobcats entered the game with the NBAs third best defence, allowing just 83.6 points on 38 per cent shooting. But in their last six home games they have surrendered 98 points per game on 48 per cent shooting. “I dont know what it is right now with us being at home, but we just dont have that energy like we have on the road,” said Bobcats centre Al Jefferson. “Thats unheard of for me. Im always used to playing well at home and not good on the road, but it is vice versa here.” NOTES: Henderson has scored in double digits 13 times this season, including the last six games. … Green has scored in double digits 13 times for the Celtics. … The Celtics are 2-3 against the Bobcats in their last five games. … Bismack Biyombo, who recently received a contract extension from the Bobcats, has not played in two of the teams last three games. … The Bobcats had 17 turnovers to Bostons 12. Dirk Nowitzki has agreed to a new contract with the Dallas Mavericks and hes taking a pay cut. According to ESPN sources, the deal is worth $25 million over three years. Earlier in the free-agent period, the contract was reportedly worth $30 million over the same term, but Nowitzki took a cut to help Dallas strengthen the team. They were able to sign Chandler Parsons to an offer sheet worth $45 million over three years, that the Houston Rockets could not afford to match. The 36-year-old has played his entire 16-year career in Dallas and averaged 21.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists over 80 games in 2013-14. Dustin Penner and Justin Williams scored in regulation, while Jonathan Quick made 31 saves to give the Kings a 9-1-5 mark over their past 15 games and keep them two points back of the first-place Sharks in the Pacific Division. “Youre only as good as your last game and we certainly needed to come back with a little bit of snarl. We lost our last game in Edmonton and you need to have that mentality that we lost that last game, weve got to come out and push,” said Williams, who has three goals and four assists over a five-game point streak. Anze Kopitar also has points in five straight, logging three goals and three assists over that run, while Penner snapped a 17-game goal drought. “Two points here gives us a great road trip, five out of six isnt easy to do coming up here to the northwest,” said Quick. “So, were happy with what we did this weekend and were looking forward to getting back home.” The Kings have taken three in a row at home versus the Flames and will host them for the first time this season. They catch Calgary in the midst of an 0-4-2 slide on the road since a win at Columbus on Dec. 27. Téma: Jak postupovat / Ginobili for a boost. Ginobili is no

Its been a long wait for Mackenzie Hughes but in just a couple of weeks, hell finally kick off his 2014 season on the Web.Com Tour. The former Canadian Amateur champion, who made his rookie year as a professional a memorable one, has had a long wait to get back on the course and after last season, hes anxious to play. “Its funny that my season really ended in September,” he said, noting the end of the PGA Tour Canada schedule. “That was so long ago and Ive had so much time to think about it.” Whats probably crossed his mind from time to time has been his great campaign of 2013, where he went from having no status and minimal financial backing to winning the Order of Merit on PGA Tour Canada, which gave him an exemption onto the Web.Com Tour. It was certainly a whirlwind season but one the product of Dundas, Ont., never doubted he could make. After playing for Canada at the World Team Amateur Championship, Hughes turned pro, moved to Charlotte, N.C., and ventured out into the world of mini-tours. “I dont like mini-tours so much,” he chuckled. “Youre not playing for a lot of money and its definitely not glamourous.” However, thats about all Hughes had at that point. And he did learn a thing or two about life as a professional, which was a definite change from his amateur and college days. “You have to learn on your own pretty quickly,” he said. “Youre really on your own.” One thing that didnt change, however, was his talent. It didnt take him long to parlay a couple of PGA Tour Canada starts into a regular gig. And, in June, after going through the qualifying and winning a playoff, he made it into the U.S. Open. Although he didnt make the cut at Merion, it was an eye-opening experience. “It showed me that Im not that far off, that I can play at that level,” he stated. “And it helped me when I got back to PGA Tour Canada.” After missing the cut in his first three stops, Hughes rolled off four top-10 finishes in his next five events. That included a runner-up finish at the Wildfire Invitational and a victory at the Cape Breton Celtic Classic. His success on the course also helped him off it. When he first turned pro, Hughes attempted to find sponsors, even coming up with a plan to sell shares of himself. That didnt work out and in the early going, things were tight. This year, hes signed on with SportBox Entertainment Group, the new Canadian agency thats headed up by former IMGer Danny Fritz and includes as clients Mike Weir, Graham DeLaet and David Hearn. Hes found some stability with sponsorships from Ping and Freedom 55 Financial, but says hes a long way from being on easy street. “Its better for sure, but at the same time, Im going to spend a lot more money this year,” Hughes pointed out. “Ill be paying for caddies, more travel, more of everything really. It adds up pretty quick. But if I play well, its not an issue.” In addition to learning how to balance his chequebook, Hughes is learning the ropes of another new tour, this one a step up on the competitive scale. The long layoff has made it possible for him to glean lots of information about playing the Web.com Tour, but that has an upside and downside. “Ive talked to a million different people about it,” Hughes said. “Ive maybe got too much advice. Im really just trying to figure out whats best for me.” He has sought out help from those whove gone before him and hes hoping to play practice rounds with fellow Canadians Roger Sloan and Adam Hadwin to not only learn about courses, but also life on tour. He will also likely join up with another Canadian rookie, Albin Choi to share expenses and experiences. “Im more excited than nervous,” Hughes admitted. “I want to test my game against the next level and see where I am.” Hughes will get that opportunity when the Tour gets underway Feb. 13 in Bogota, Colombia. KITCHENER, Ont. — Edmontons Val Sweeting is two wins away from a trip to Winnipeg to play in Canadas Road of the Rings in December. Sweeting claimed a berth in the Page playoffs on Friday, beating Tracy Horgan of Sudbury, Ont., 5-3 in one of a pair of womens C-Event finals at the Olympic curling pre-trials. “It feels great,” said Sweeting, who will face Calgarys Cheryl Bernard on Saturday. “We played really well today and we want to keep it up tomorrow and put ourselves in a position today. Thats what we did today. The team played really well, so to come out on top is confidence-boosting for sure.” On Friday night, Sweeting had a tight game going with Horgan, who represented Ontario at the 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, through six ends. But with Horgan holding a slim 2-1 lead, Sweeting was able to make a clutch hit to score a game-changing three, and never looked back, although she needed to make a delicate tap with her final rock of the 10th end to nail down the win. Bernard, meanwhile, prevailed 10-8 in an extra end over Cathy Auld of Mississauga, Ont., in a topsy-turvy affair that saw Bernard race to a 5-2 lead through four ends, then fall behind 8-6 through nine. But Bernard made a spectacular triple takeout to score a game-tying deuce in the 10th, and then stole the winning pair in 11 when Auld was wide on her game-winning draw to bite the button. The winner of the Sweeting-Bernard game will move into Sundays qualifying game for the Roar of the Rings Canadian curling trials in Winnipeg — the event that will decide Canadas teams for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. “We were definitely here to win,” said Sweeting. “Were in a position to do that, so we have definitely met our expectations.” The first womens Trials qualifier will be decided Saturday night between A-Event winner Kelly Scott of Kelowna, B.C., and B-Event winner Renee Sonnenberg of Grande Prairie, Alta. The loser of that game will play the Sweeting-Bernard winner. In mens play, reigning Brier champ Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., ran his win streak to four games on Friday night with a 9-6 win over Saskatoons Steve Laycock in the B-Event final. That set up a tantalizing Page playoff A-B game Saturday against A-Event winner John Morris and his Kelowna/Vernon, B.C., team. Jacobs took control of his game Friday night by scoring three in the fifth end, and then took advantage of a Laycock miscue in the ninth to score a deuce out of thin air. “Mission accomplished,” said Jacobs. “Were in that A-B game, we have two shots to go to the Trials. We really came out and played well today, and we got a few breaks honestly. But sometimes you need those breaks to get the wins, and well take it.” In C-Event play, meanwhile, Jake Higgs of Glencoe, Ont., stole a big deuce in the eighth end — the turning point in an 8-7 win over Joe Frans of Bradford, Ont. Higgs advanced to a C-Event semifinal clash with 2006 Olympic gold-medallist Brad Gushue of St. Johns, N.L., while Frans was eliminated with the loss. TSNs Jack Armstrong offers his thoughts on the wealth of Canadian talent in NCAA, the Wizards acquisition of Andre Miller, the skills of Spencer Hawes, the transition of Glen Davis to the Clippers and the upside of Evan Turner in Indiana. 1. CANADIAN PLAYERS: Take a look at just a few of the up-and-comers like Andrew Wiggins (Kansas), Tyler Ennis (Syracuse), Nik Stauskas (Michigan), Melvin Ejim (Iowa St.), Kevin Pangos (Gonzaga) and Brady Heslip (Baylor) and its quite impressive to see how the continued growth of the sport is so amazing to watch before our eyes. The amount of young people playing the sport at a high level is growing and it will only get better. The success stories keep coming at you from so many different directions. Great time to be a hoops fan. 2. ANDRE MILLER (Wizards): Like this pickup for them. I know conditioning will be a factor for a while but theyve been quite inconsistent when theyve gone to their bench and he will provide stable/steady play and leadership for them. He knows how to run a team and get teammates quality shots. His experience and savvy will help provide direction for a team that goes through nightly droughts of attention to detail and productivity. You never have enough veteran know-how and this team desperately lacked it. 3. SPENCER HAWES (Cavs): Will be difficult for them to capture the eighth seed in the East yet they improved their chances by picking him up. Low maintenance guy who has a great knack for making the right plays. Good shooter with outstanding passing skills in both the high and low post and hell compete for you on the boards. Has really developed over the years into a nice secondary piece in a starting lineup. His skill and know-how will help the chemistry of this young team. 4. GLEN DAVIS (Clippers): This move had head coach Doc Rivers written all over it. Obviously, he coached Big Baby in Boston and knows his pros and cons and feels he can be a good fit for them. When you look at LAs question marks in the second unit, particularly in the front court, this makes complete sense for them. He gets after it and can score in the post and will defend/rebound to the best of his ability for you. His experience and relationship with the coaching staff will make it a good transition. 5. EVAN TURNER (Pacers): To get a guy who is still developing as a pro and having a solid year is a smart acquisition. His rebounding ability and desire to guard are pluses. He can get to the rim and will give them good second unit scoring. In addition, being thrust into a playoff environment coming from a Philly situation that was a total rebuild gives him a huge boost and shot of energy. His competitive juices will be flowing. Look at his play each year and I see a guy thats starting to figure it out. Averaging an impressive 17+ ppg this season and how do you turn that down? At the end of the season, you can revisit the relationship contractually, considering you have some control with a qualifying offer and see if you want it to be a rental or continue on. In the meantime, a sound pickup for the stretch run and playoffs. nike roshe run sale uk . Another is a bunch of groundballs. Finally, theres a game that lasts two hours six minutes. Pavano kept up his recent surge with an efficient six-hitter for the Twins in a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. . It all paid off Friday night, when the Toronto right-hander earned his first victory since 2008 with an effective and emotional effort at Baltimore. McGowan allowed five hits over 6 1-3 innings, and the Blue Jays used two unearned runs to beat Chris Tillman and the Orioles 2-0. http://www.ukfreeruncheap.com/. Nick Bonino and Matt Beleskey also scored in regulation and Frederik Andersen stopped 27 shots for the Ducks, who will face Dallas in the opening round of the post-season. Anze Kopitar had two goals, including the tying one with 3:12 left in the third period, and Dustin Brown also scored for Los Angeles. FRANKFURT – A late goal by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Borussia Dortmund a 1-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday and a place in the semifinals of the German Cup. Henrikh Mkhitaryans corner was headed over to the far post by Sebastian Kehl in the 83rd and Aubameyang sent a powerful header from close range past Sebastian Rode on the goal-line, with goalkeeper Kevin Trapp stranded in the far corner. Until then, Eintracht had had the upper hand in the second half, after Dortmund had missed better chances in the first. In Wednesdays remaining quarterfinals, Bayern Munich travels to Hamburg, Hoffenheim plays Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen hosts second-division Kaiserslautern. Frankfurt travels to Dortmund in the Bundesliga over the weekend. Kehl says Dortmund “had the better chances” and “deserved to win.” cheap soccer jerseys for sale . But now that Di Vaio and midfielder Andres Romero have served their three-game suspensions for a melee in a 2013 playoff game, the Italian striker is ready to get back to the business of scoring goals. “Ill try to bring something more, some experience, to the field,” Di Vaio said Thursday. “I trained hard the last three weeks and I want to play.” The scoring touch that saw him amass 20 goals last season — all in open play, no penalties — was clearly lacking as the Impact opened with losses of 3-2 in Dallas, 1-0 in Houston and 2-0 to Seattle in their home opener at Olympic Stadium last week. The 38-year-old, who will see his first action Saturday when the Impact play the Union in Philadelphia, cautioned that he cant turn the clubs fortunes around on his own. It will be his first competitive game in five months. “I hear that people are expecting us to get points because me and Romero are returning, but its not just two players that are going to change everything,” he said. “I have to do my job — try to score and be dangerous — but the most important thing is that the team keeps its confidence because when you lose a game, sometimes you think what youre doing on the field is no good. I see every day the team is training really well, with a good attitude.” Andrew Wenger filled in for Di Vaio up front and had a goal against Dallas, but foor the most part, the Impact created plenty of chances that went wanting for someone with the goal-scorers knack.dddddddddddd Montreal leads MLS with 57 shot attempts and 20 shots on goal, with midfielder Felipe Martins at the top with 13 shots. Defender Heath Pearce only joined the Impact this season, but the former New York Red Bull knows what Di Vaio can bring to a match. “Hes a great goal scorer and hes a really busy and active player on the field,” said Pearce. "Its always good to have someone like that who always wants the ball — a guy who gets mad when he doesnt get the ball all the time. “Thats the kind of guy you want making big plays in the tough moments for your team.” The suspension stemmed from an ugly 3-0 loss in Houston in the Impacts first MLS playoff match in October. Late in the game, Romero touched off a skirmish by kicking an opponent. Di Vaio took a red card when he jumped into the fracas. It wasnt clear whether Romero will play in Philadelphia, but his return gives coach Frank Klopas an extra option. The Argentine played mainly on the left wing last season. “Its never easy for players being out, especially when you look at Marco,” said Klopas. “Its kind of crazy, the three-game suspension he got, but his attitude has been great and hes worked extremely hard.” The Union may be the ideal opponent for Di Vaio, who scored four times in three matches against them last season, including a hat-trick in a 5-3 win on May 25 in Montreal. Téma: Jak postupovat / e bases again, but the Yankees

Each week, TSN.ca Fantasy Editor Scott Cullen, NFL Editor Ben Fisher, and Isaac Owusu discuss three hot fantasy football topics. How good could Josh Gordon be matched with a competent quarterback? Cullen: Considering how well Gordon is playing with mediocre quarterbacks, its not unreasonable to think that he would be the most productive receiver in football if given a top-tier starting quarterback but, the truth is, Gordon is not that far off as it is. Gordon is already averaging a league-leading 124.9 receiving yards per game and his 19.5 yards per catch ranks second only to the Saints Kenny Stills (20.6), who is strictly a deep threat. Gordon catches a higher percentage of his targets (64 of 113 – 56.6%) than Detroits Calvin Johnson (72 for 132 – 54.5%), who holds the title as the leagues best wide receiver now so the only thing that would really work in his favour with a better quarterback might be more opportunities to score. Fisher: Gordon is the second-leading fantasy receiver despite missing the first two games to injury so theres not much room for improvement. The former second round supplemental pick gets thrown to a lot in Cleveland; with a better QB comes also a better offence so Gordon could conceivably see his targets decrease, but that better offence would also lend to more scoring opportunities. Ill stop short of putting Gordon on Megatrons level just yet, but teams are definitely kicking themselves for not pulling the trigger when the Browns made Gordon available earlier this season. The guy is a stud regardless of whos throwing him the ball Owusu: Without question, Josh Gordon has moved himself into high WR1 status. His fortune has come simply by being the only dependable option in an offense that has no choice but to throw the ball. Going into next season Gordon will be viewed as what Brandon Marshall, Julio Jones and A.J Green were heading into this year, another party in the battle for who will be the second best receiver in fantasy, behind Calvin Johnson, who is in a tier of his own. Considering that the Browns best RB option is either probably Chris Ogbonnaya or Willis McGahee, and the team has had three barely average quarterbacks passing Gordon the ball with all the defensive attention placed on him, he has played out of his mind. Like a true WR1, Gordon is matchup-proof a target machine. If the Browns can pair him up with a decent passer on a full-time basis Gordon should be the second WR drafted next year in fantasy based on the fact that there really just isnt a major weapon in that offense that could bite into his production like Marshall, Jones and Green have to deal with. Can Nick Foles be a future Top 5 fantasy QB? Cullen: Top five is too high for me. For one thing, hes not going to forever throw touchdown passes without ever throwing an interception, but if we presume that Foles becomes more comfortable with more reps as the Eagles starter, I can buy him as a consistent fantasy starter. Maybe, as the older guys – Manning, Brady, Brees (even Romo and Roethlisberger too) – either slow down or move on, maybe Foles could creep into the Top Five at that point, but I guess you could say that I like, instead of love, Foles. Fisher: Foles average numbers this season would have him ranked among the best fantasy QBs this season and hes being mentioned as finalist for Peyton Mannings MVP award this year. His numbers suggest hes a Top 5 at least, but can he be trusted to continue putting up these numbers on a consistent basis? I dont think Foles will be susceptible to the same “sophomore slump” as other second-year starters because theres nothing too revolutionary about his game that defences will eventually adjust to. Still, theres a few too many QBs I trust more than Foles (Manning, Brady, Rodgers…) to make him a Top 5 right away. Id be comfortable picking him as a QB1 next year however. Owusu: Yes! It appears that Nick Foles has finally gained that vote of confidence from head coach Chip Kelly, and that goes a long way. Foles plays in an offence that is spoiled with riches: tons of weapons, a dangerous running back an aggressive coach, and they play in the NFC East! the perfect recipe for quarterbacking success. Since taking over as Philadelphia Eagles starter, Foles has launched the ball vertically downfield at a ridiculous rate, in fact hes tied for second with Drew Brees in 40 yard pass completions with 11, only behind Peyton Mannings 12. Its all crazy considering that Foles only has 6 starts this season and zero interceptions. Foles consistency and grasp of the Eagles offence makes it apparent that hes poised to join the tier of top 5 fantasy QBs consisting of Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Which rookie runner have you been more impressed by: Eddie Lacy or LeVeon Bell? Cullen: Im going with Lacy, though Aaron Rodgers recent absence shows just how much respect for the Packers passing game helped Lacy churn out yards earlier in the year. Generally, Ive been a little down on Bell because he averages only 3.3 yards per carry, but he augments his rushing totals with some decent receiving numbers (33 REC, 319 YDS). Some of that is obviously due to a subpar Pittsburgh offensive line and the circumstances surrounding each back makes it a closer call, but I still side with Lacy. Fisher: This is a tossup. Lacy and Bell have near identical average numbers in both scores and total yards. Lacy has averaged more yards on the ground but Bell makes up for it through the air. But while the two are near identical now I think Bell will finish the season with the better average numbers. Lacy will struggle along with the rest of the Packers offence while Aaron Rodgers recovers from his shoulder injury and Bell is the slightly better option in PPR leagues. Owusu: Its been fairly close, but between the two of them Lacy has showed that he is the guy youd want to have as your RB1 in all formats. Bell is solid and does contribute in the Steelers offense but his role on his team is not as prominent as Lacys. Its been clear all season that Mike McCarthy wants to ease the workload from Aaron Rodgers, (or whoever else is tossing the ball around for Green Bay) and Lacy has responded well to the call. Consistency and usage are what make an RB1 valuable, and for Lacy, in 7/11 games that he played, hes amassed at least 20+ rush attempts, while Bell only has 2/9 games where hes actually gone for over 20+ carries. Lacy also already has three 100-yard rushing games, to Bells zero. Both RBs have been steady with their production but Lacy has shown that the design of the Packers offense has called for more production out of him and he has delivered. . The solutions? Not so much. Given an extra week to stew over the worst start in 45 years, Tomlin is tweaking the lineup hoping to find a spark that will help his team begin the long road back to respectability. . Bortles, one of three quarterbacks vying to be the first taken in the NFL Draft in May alongside Bridgewater and Johnny Manziel, helped his cause by impressing scouts with a clean performance at the UCF Pro Day Wednesday, according to reports. http://www.wildjerseyshockeyproshop.com/Matt-Co…. The Texas Rangers right-hander will probably reconsider now. Wolf pitched five strong innings for his first big league win in his first start in the majors, David Murphy and Adrian Beltre homered in a three-run first inning, and the Rangers avoided a sweep with a 3-1 victory against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. Scott won four times around the world, none bigger than his playoff victory at Augusta National to become the first Australian in a green jacket. HOUSTON — New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi admitted he didnt know anything about Yangervis Solarte when he was signed to a minor league deal in January. The rookie is quickly teaching his manager all about himself. Solarte had three hits and an RBI in his first major league start and Derek Jeter drove in a run to give the New York Yankees their first win this season, 4-2 over the Houston Astros on Thursday night. “You have to give a lot of credit to our scouting department and front office for finding this kid because he gives us a lot of options being a switch-hitter and can play all over the infield,” Girardi said. The 26-year-old Solarte has spent time in the minors with Minnesota and Texas, but never got called up until this season after hitting .429 this spring. “Ive worked very hard for this, and to be able to help the team, thats even better,” Solarte said in Spanish through a translator. “These are the small things that are key.” Solarte singled in a two-run third inning which put New York up 2-1. He doubled in the fifth and scored on a single by Jeter to push it to 3-1. Houston cut the lead to one in the bottom of that inning before Solarte came through again, this time with a single that drove in Ichiro Suzuki. Solarte, the third baseman, also had a nifty defensive play when he grabbed a bullet hit right at him by Jose Altuve in the eighth. Ivan Nova allowed six hits, two runs and walked five in 5 2-3 innings. He was helped by a defence which turned four double plays with him on the mound. “This could have been a game where he gave up a lot of runs without those double play balls,” Girardi said. “He made big pitches when he had to.” David Robertson, who took over as closer for Mariano Rivera, pitched a perfect ninth for his first save. Dexter Fowler continued to shine in his first season with the Astros, getting two singles to become the second player in franchise history — and first since Ken Caminiti in 1987 — to begin his Houston career with three straight multi-hit games. “We had our chances, especially early on there,” Houston manager Bo Porter said. “I think we hit into four double plays in the first five innings. We had baserunners everywhere. It was probably one big hit away from getting some separation early in the gaame.dddddddddddd” Houston starter Brett Oberholtzer also went 5 2-3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs while fanning five. Suzuki doubled with two outs in the seventh before scoring on the RBI by Solarte. Solartes hit was a high pop-up which dropped right between three Astros players assembled directly in front of home plate. Solarte doubled with one out in the fifth and scored on a two-out single by Jeter to make it 3-1. Jeter was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Houston got to 3-2 when Jonathan Villar doubled and scored on a single by Fowler in the bottom of the inning. The fourth double play by the Yankees got the first two outs before Chris Carter grounded out to end the inning. Oberholtzer retired the first seven batters he faced before running into trouble. Suzuki and Solarte hit consecutive singles before a third one by Brett Gardner scored Suzuki to tie it at 1-all. Jeter walked and Carlos Beltrans sacrifice fly scored Solarte to give New York a 2-1 lead. Fowler and Grossman hit back-to-back singles to start the first before Nova plunked Castro to load the bases. Altuve grounded into a forceout that left Castro out at second and scored Fowler to make it 1-0. Carter walked to load the bases again, but the Yankees turned a double play to limit the damage. The Yankees also used double plays to get out of the third and fourth innings. Castro was also hit by a pitch in the third inning to become the first Astro since Brad Ausmus on April 7, 2007, to be hit twice in a game. He remained in the game before being replaced by Carlos Corporan in the top of the sixth with a bruise on his right foot. X-rays were negative and he is day to day. NOTES: A replay was initiated by umpires on the field to check the count on an at-bat by Solarte with two outs in the ninth and it was confirmed it was a 3-1 count. … Japanese ace Masahiro Tanaka is scheduled to make his major league debut against right-hander Dustin McGowan when the Yankees open a three-game series at Toronto on Friday. … Houston right-hander Lucas Harrell opposes left-hander Tyler Skaggs when the Astros begin a series with the Los Angeles Angels. … The Astros observed a moment of silence before the game to remember the victims on Wednesdays shooting at Fort Hood, which left three dead and 16 wounded. BARCELONA, Spain — Cristiano Ronaldo scored his Spanish league-leading 25th goal to give Real Madrid a lacklustre 1-0 win at Malaga on Saturday, when the pacesetters extended their unbeaten run to 30 consecutive matches in all competitions. Diego Costa made sure Atletico Madrid stayed within three points of its crosstown rivals by scoring his 22nd league goal of the season in a 1-0 win at home over Espanyol. Ronaldo netted the winner in the 23rd minute, and a tired Madrid was fortunate Malaga failed to muster a comeback after pushing the visitors into their area for the final 10 minutes. Third-place Barcelona will enter Sundays match against Osasuna seven points behind Madrid with the two powerhouses set to clash in the Spanish capital next weekend. Madrids win was tarnished by the loss of Karim Benzema to a right thigh injury after colliding with Ronaldo in the first half. “We suffered, above all in the second half,” Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso said. “They pressed us and it was tough for us to move the ball. These are three important points. There are 10 games left and we have to play each one like its the last.” Elsewhere, Rayo Vallecano beat Almeria 3-1 to provisionally escape the relegation zone with a third consecutive victory, while Celta Vigo earned an entertaining 1-0 win at Levante. The opening stage of the match at La Rosaleda Stadium saw a vibrant back-and-forth exchange before Ronaldo put Madrid ahead with a wonderful solo effort. The Ballon dOr winner looked to be hemmed in by two defenders on the edge of the area, but he took three touches to his right and lashed a bouncing strike beyond goalkeeper Willy Caballero. Ronaldos goal gave him 39 goals in 36 games in all competitions this campaign. Ronaldo went close twice more shortly after, first being blocked by Caballero and then sending Gareth Bales lobbed pass into the side netting before he ran into Benzema. Benzema was treated on the sideline by team doctors before he asked to be substituted, ceding his spot to Angel Di Maria, in the 31st. Former Malaga standout Francisco “Isco” Alarcon, who joined Madrid this summer, wasted a golden chance in the 51st when he sent the ball sailing high after Di Maria set him up for a one-on-one with Caballero. Isco was applauded by his former fans when replaced by Jese Rodriguez less than 10 minutes later. Madrid, so dominant in the first half, lost control of the ball and Malaga tilted the match in its favour led by tireless forward Nordin Amrabat. But defender Sergio Sanchez blasted his teams most promising opportunity to level high in the 76th. “This team is consistent game after game,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. “We are ready for the clasico.” But before receiving fierce rival Barcelona, Madrid hosts Schalke on Tuesday with one foot in the Champions League quarterfinals after winning their first meeting 6-1. The first half at Vicente Calderon Stadium was ruled by the defences and featured a good save each by Atleticos Courtois Thibaut and Espanyols Kiko Casilla. Diego Costa broke through in the 55th when he received a throughball from David Villa, easily fended off Diego Colottos timid attempt to slow him down, and fired the ball past Casilla. Courtois took a hard hit to the head when Jhon Cordoba inadvertently kneed him, but the Belgian recovered and four minutes later in the 77th David Lopezs bouncing strike struck his head before falling wide of the post. “Espanyol played a great game and complicated our lives a lot,” Diego Costa said. “But that just makes us stronger.” Rayo won thanks to Joaquin Larriveys double after Alberto Bueno headed in the opener. Fernando Soriano scored for Almeria. Rayo rose three points above danger. Almeria was left in the drop zone along with Valladolid and Real Betis before they play on Sunday. Celta forward Manuel “Nolito” Agudo scored from a well-orchestrated counterattack in the 19th. David Barral missed a penalty for Levante in the 61st. The loss was Levantes first in seven straight home games. Both teams stayed in the middle of the standings. Minnesota Wild Jerseys . New video, though, shows Tomlin inching closer to the field before Baltimore kickoff returner Jacoby Jones nearly collided with him in last Thursdays 22-20 win by the Ravens. KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh released video Monday indicating Tomlin took a sizable step toward the field as Jones broke into the open, and didnt move until Jones was nearly on top of the coach. Tomlin actually put his right foot on green grass as part of a stutter step move out of harms way. It wasnt early enough to stop Jones from moving to his right just before being tackled by Pittsburghs Cortez Allen after a 73-yard return. Tomlin was not penalized, though he is facing disciplinary action. Tomlin said following the game he was watching the play unfold on one of the scoreboards and lost his “placement” on the field. “I do it quite often, like everybody else in the National Football League,” Tomlin said. “I was wrong, I accept responsibility for it.” Steelers safety Ryan Clark defended Tomlin, saying being on the field is common even though rules require players, coaches and support staff to stand behind a large white strip of grass that separates the field from the benches.dddddddddddd “Im always on the field. I sit on the field, but I try to sit on it away from anything,” Clark said Monday. The 12-year veteran said he stepped onto the field while Pittsburghs offence tried a potential tying 2-point conversion against the Ravens in the final minutes “so I could see.” Clark added there was no malice in Tomlins actions. “There was no intent at all,” Clark said. “When he noticed he was in the way, he got out of the way. If he tripped (Jones), tackled him, itd be a different story.” The NFL fined the New York Jets $100,000 in 2010 when cameras caught strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi tripping a Miami player on the sideline. Alosi was suspended by the Jets and eventually resigned after the season. Jones said after the game that “if I was (Tomlin), I would do the same thing” and didnt blame the coach for Jones inability to score. That doesnt mean Jones is ruling out the idea Tomlin knew what he was doing. “Before I got to him, he was halfway on the field,” Jones said. “He gave me a little juke, and I tried to juke him.” ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’
