Téma: Jak postupovat / spots in every short-track speed BOSTON — Boston Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck went onto the court right after the final buzzer sounded to pull aside the game ball for coach Brad Stevens. It took five games, but the Celtics finally helped Stevens earn his first NBA victory. “Im going to celebrate for a whole 12 minutes, and then Im going to start watching Orlando and trying to figure them out,” the first-year Celtics coach said after Boston beat the Utah Jazz, one of the leagues other winless teams, 97-87 on Wednesday night. Brandon Bass scored 20 points and Jeff Green added 18 to lead Boston to its first win of the season. The game reunited Stevens, the former Butler coach, with Gordon Hayward, the Bulldogs star who took them to the 2010 NCAA championship game against Duke and just missed a shot from inside half court that would have won it. “We exchanged greetings before the game,” said Hayward, who had 28 points and nine rebounds. “But being the competitors we are, we both wanted to win the basketball game.” Now one of the two remaining winless teams in the NBA this season along with the Denver Nuggets, Utah trailed by 25 points in the third quarter and opened the fourth down 22 before scoring 17 of the next 20 points. Hayward had eight points, five rebounds and three assists in the fourth quarter, but the Jazz never got closer than six points. “Hes a lot better than when I coached him. And he was pretty good when I coached him,” Stevens said. “I was there when he was a puppy. … But I wish he would have backed off a little at the end.” The attendance of 17,130 was about 1,500 fans short of a sellout, ending a streak of 289 games dating to the end of the 2006-07 season. That was the last game before the Celtics brought in Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to join Paul Pierce for a New Big 3. The trio helped Boston win the 2008 NBA title and took the Celtics back to the finals two years later. But the team was dismantled this summer when Garnett and Pierce were traded to the Brooklyn Nets and coach Doc Rivers left for the Los Angeles Clippers. Stevens, who guided Butler to consecutive NCAA championship games, took over the Celtics — his first NBA experience as a coach or player. The rebuilding Celtics lost their first four games, including last weeks home opener in which they blew a 22-point lead. But the Celtics held on in Stevens second game in front of the home crowd, thanks largely to a second quarter in which they outscored Utah 27-8 and turned a three-point deficit into a double-digit lead. “Eight points in the second quarter. Eight points in the second quarter,” Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. “Thats where we lost the game right there.” Gerald Wallace had nine points and nine rebounds for Boston. Derrick Favours had 10 points and 14 rebounds and Enes Kanter scored 22 points with eight boards for the Jazz, who open a season with five straight losses for the first time since 1974, when they were still in New Orleans. “Its a long year,” said Corbin, whose team goes to Chicago and Toronto. “Were in a bad stretch right now, losing five games in a row. Youve got two more tough ones on this road trip and youre still shorthanded. But you know what, nobodys going to feel sorry for us.” The Jazz opened a 16-3 lead in the first 5 minutes but Boston scored the next seven points and cut it to 26-23 by the end of the quarter. The Celtics made the first four baskets of the second to take the lead, and they scored 12 consecutive points at the end of the half to take a 16-point lead. “You had two hungry teams that needed a win. We got off to” a fast start, forward Richard Jefferson said. “But we didnt come out in the second quarter.” It was 70-45 midway through the third quarter and 84-62 heading into the fourth before the Celtics missed eight of their next nine shots. Kanter made a layup to cut it to 89-83, but Bass made a jumper and Jared Sullinger made a baby hook with 3:16 to play to make it 93-83. NOTES: The Celtics entered the night averaging 21 turnovers per game; they had 15. Utah averaged 19.8 turnovers and committed 22. … The Celtics avoided starting the season 0-5 for the first time since 1946, when they lost the first five games in franchise history. … The Jazz played the “old Celtics,” also known as the Brooklyn Nets, on Tuesday night and lost 104-88. Téma: Jak postupovat / Ducks fans from that 2008 pla LONDON — Croatian player Marin Cilic was handed a nine-month suspension by the International Tennis Federation on Monday after testing positive for a banned substance. The suspension was back-dated to May 1 and will last through Jan. 31, 2014. Cilic tested positive for nikethamide, a stimulant, at a tournament in Munich last spring. The ITF said it accepted the players contention that he ingested the substance inadvertently in glucose tablets and was not trying to cheat. As a result, the ITF gave him a reduced penalty rather than a ban of up to two years. “Mr. Cilic asserted that the nikethamide, for which he did not hold a valid TUE (Therapeutic Use Exemption), had entered his system through his ingestion of Coramine glucose tablets that had been purchased on his behalf from a pharmacy,” the ITF said in a statement. “The Independent Tribunal found that Mr Cilic ingested the nikethamide inadvertently as a result of taking the Coramine glucose tablets, and did not intend to enhance his performance in doing so.” The 24-year-old Cilic, who reached a career-best ranking of No. 9 in 2010, has not played since pulling out from Wimbledon in June before a second-round match, citing a left knee injury. He has since missed the U.S. Open and will also be ineligible for the Australian Open in January. The ITF said Cilic will lose all his results, ranking points and prize money since the Munich tournament. His best result since Munich was a runner-up finish at the Queens Club grass-court tournament, where he lost to Andy Murray. Cilic said in a statement he will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland. He said the banned substance came from a glucose tablet purchased at a pharmacy in France. “Unbeknownst to me, the glucose tablets contained a substance that is banned in-competition (although it is allowed out-of-competition),” he said. “I wish to emphasize that I have never knowingly or deliberately taken any banned substances in my life and that I am opposed to any use of performance-enhancing substances in sport,” Cilic added. Cilic said he isnt able to comment further until the legal process is completed. . The Ducks acquired Robidas from the Dallas Stars on Tuesday for a conditional fourth-round pick in this years draft. The overall NHL leaders made three deals on the day before the leagues trade deadline, shaking up their roster with 20 games left in the regular season. Anaheim also sent backup goalie Viktor Fasth to Edmonton and shipped forward Dustin Penner to Washington. Although the 37-year-old Robidas wont return from a broken leg for at least two more weeks, the Ducks were eager to acquire a hard-nosed veteran with superior passing skills and a nasty edge to his game. Theyre all attributes Anaheim could use in its attempt to back up its outstanding regular season with playoff success. The Ducks lead the NHL with 91 points and three straight victories heading into Wednesdays game against Montreal, but theyve won just one playoff series since winning their franchises only Stanley Cup title in 2007. Robidas knew he probably didnt have a future with the Stars, who havent discussed a contract extension with him. When he heard Anaheim was interested, he jumped at the chance to play in the post-season for the first time since 2008, when Dallas eliminated the defending champion Ducks in the first round. “Were going for a Stanley Cup, and thats what Ive been waiting for for a long time,” said Robidas, who is joining his fourtth NHL club.dddddddddddd “I think its a great opportunity for me, and Im just very excited for the chance the Ducks are giving me.” Robidas hasnt played since breaking his leg against Chicago on Nov. 29 while crashing into the boards behind the net, but he has been participating extensively in practice. He had four goals and one assist in 24 games for the Stars this season. “Everything has been going really well,” Robidas said of his recovery. “Ive just got a few little things I need to get a little more comfortable.” Robidas should add experience and toughness to a defence that has spent the entire season without veteran Sheldon Souray, who got hurt in summer training. Robidas should be familiar to some Ducks fans from that 2008 playoff series in which Anaheims Todd Marchant accidentally broke Robidas nose with the puck — and Robidas returned to the game shortly afterward. “Thats how I play,” Robidas said. “Im not a finesse player. I know my role. I know what I need to do. I know how I need to play, and Im not going to change the way Ive been playing. Im going to be the same player, and I think thats why they came and they got me.” Robidas is seventh in Dallas club history with 704 games played. He has 211 points in two stints with Dallas, his home for all but 45 NHL games since 2002. The draft pick acquired by the Stars becomes a third-rounder if the Ducks reach the Western Conference finals and Robidas plays in half their playoff games. Téma: Jak postupovat / with a 2-1 victory over the Oilers in The Vancouver Canucks could be closer to naming a general manager. The team met with Boston Bruins assistant general manager Jim Benning on Wednesday about the vacant role. TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports that Benning is considered the frontrunner for the job. Dreger also reports that some believe that Canucks president Trevor Linden is waiting until the end of the second round of the playoffs to make an appointment. Benning, a former Canucks defenceman who spent nine seasons in the league with Vancouver and the Toronto Maple Leafs, has been an assistant with the Bruins since 2006. Following his playing career that ended in 1990, he worked as a scout for the Anaheim Ducks and the Buffalo Sabres before a six-year run as the Sabres Director of Amateur Scouting starting in 1998. Benning won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011. The Canucks parted ways with former general manager Mike Gillis last month. Téma: Jak postupovat / falo into a tie for la MONTREAL – General manager Jim Popp says he has had no contact with former NFL receiver Chad (Ochocinco) Johnson about playing for the Montreal Alouettes. “I have had no discussions with Chad Johnson or his representation,” Popp said Friday in an email. However, he appeared to confirm a report on Twitter from TSN this week that Johnson was on Montreals negotiation list. He said it had become news “because someone has leaked confidential information to a media source about our negotiation list.” Johnsons response on Twitter to the report said: “Nothing to negotiate, Ill be fast as hell and in shape @ochocinco.” In another cryptic tweet later, Johnson was asked what are the chances he will sign with the Alouettes and he replied: “85 % yes 15 % probation.” The 36-year-old Johnson played 11 seasons in the NFL, the first 10 with Cincinnati. He last played in 2011 with New England, when he had 15 catches for 276 yards. Over his career, the popular receiver caught 766 passes for 11,059 yards and 67 touchdowns. BUFFALO, N.Y. — Given how poorly Buffalo was playing two months ago, defenceman Tyler Myers is certain it would have let this one slip away. Its a much different story in March, now that the surging Sabres have climbed back in the hunt for a playoff spot. Buffalo allowed the tying goal with 5 seconds left in regulation, but Myers scored 2:01 into overtime to secure a 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night. “Two months ago, I would say it wouldve been very tough with our group,” Myers said, noting how the Sabres might have allowed frustration to settle in after Montreals David Desharnais forced overtime by scoring during a wild scramble in front. “But I think weve come a very long, long way,” Myers said. “Those goals dont feel good. And the way we responded was a big sign of life with our group.” The Sabres (33-29-8) improved to 9-2-2 in their past 13 games, a roll that has moved them from the depths of the Eastern Conference standings into ninth place, two points behind Washington in the race for the final playoff spot. Myers raced up the right wing to join Derek Roy and Jason Pominville for a 3-on-2 rush that led to the winning goal. Roy crossed the blue line and slid a pass across to Myers, who snapped a shot by Peter Budaj and just inside the left post. Tyler Ennis scored twice, Drew Stafford had two assists and Ryan Miller stopped 26 shots while extending Buffalos home winning streak to a season-best five straight. “I think it shows weve got good character,” Ennis said. “It can be deflating when you let in a goal with a few seconds left. And we bounce back and score right away in overtime.” Desharnais and Erik Cole each had a goal and an assist each for the Canadiens (27-32-11), who salvaged a point but remain stuck in last place in the East. Coach Randy Cunneyworth didnt consider the loss to Buffalo as a setback, and noted his team was jet-lagged after a 4-1 win at Vancouver on Saturday. “I dont look at it as a step backward,” Cunneyworth said. "I was happy with the effort. II think under the circumstances, the guys gave everything they had.ddddddddddddquot; Despite a slow start and being outshot 14-6 in the first period, the Canadiens opened the scoring 4:32 in on Coles slap shot off a Sabres turnover. Buffalo pressured Montreal but Budaj stepped up with 33 stops. In the first period, he somehow got a piece of Thomas Vaneks shot through a screen. Four minutes into the second, Budaj thrust his glove up to snag Roys blast that came on a 3-on-1 break. Vanek was foiled again with 8:32 remaining, when he got in alone only to have Budaj get a piece of the shot with his right pad. Ennis tied it 11:08 into the second period on a great individual rush when he crossed the blue line, turned Montreal defenceman Andrei Markov inside out and beat Budaj by faking a backhand shot before going forehand. Ennis then put the Sabres in front 1:50 into the third period courtesy of a fortunate bounce on a 2-on-1 break. His pass through the crease deflected in off Montreal defenceman Alexei Emelins stick. Buffalo improved to 7-0-1 in its past eight against Northeast Division-rival Montreal. The only blemish was a 4-3 shootout loss in their previous meeting last month. That game prompted Sabres coach Lindy Ruff to say he was “embarrassed” following a sloppy effort that dropped Buffalo into a tie for last place in the East. Ruff was in a better mood this time. “It was tough on the emotions giving that goal up with that amount of time,” Ruff said. “We didnt defend that situation very well. But to come back and go after it and not get on our heels … I thought we answered the bell.” NOTES: Sabres LW Matt Ellis is out indefinitely after hurting his right knee in a 4-3 shootout win at Ottawa on Saturday. Ruff also said D Andrej Sekera has been diagnosed with pneumonia after missing the past three games with flulike symptoms. … Desharnais returned after missing one game with a lower body injury. … Before the anthems, the Sabres honoured Rick Martin, Buffalos French Connection-line winger, who died last March 13 of heart disease. Téma: Jak postupovat / igned a 4-year contract ext Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is set to extend a memorable season by joining Canada for the IIHF World Hockey Championship. The Edmonton Oilers rookie accepted an invitation Tuesday after receiving medical clearance from the Oilers. Nugent-Hopkins missed time this season with a shoulder injury, but was eager for the opportunity to represent his country. “Its always something I wanted to do,” he said. “Getting asked is a big honour for me.” The 18-year-old will be joined by Oilers teammate Devan Dubnyk, who has agreed to return to the event for a third straight year. Dubnyk didnt see much action in the last two tournaments but should be used more this time around in a goaltending tandem with Cam Ward. In all, Hockey Canada has received commitments from 10 forwards, four defencemen and two goaltenders. The NHLs top goal-scorer, Steven Stamkos, will not be among the players who travel to Europe at the end of the month. Even though an MRI on his injured left shoulder revealed no structural damage, the Tampa Bay Lightning star elected to pass on his invitation Tuesday. “Im going to rest the shoulder,” Stamkos told the Tampa Tribune. There should still be plenty of scoring to go around, with four 30-goal scorers (Corey Perry, John Tavares, Jordan Eberle, Evander Kane) from this season and a strong supporting cast that includes Jeff Skinner and Nugent-Hopkins, who put up 52 points in 62 games. The No. 1 pick from last years draft was never given the chance to represent Canada at the world junior tournament. He was cut at age 17 and wasnt made available by the Oilers this year. Hes heading to the world championship at a crucial time for Canada, which has dipped to fourth in the world rankings after consecutive quarter-final exits. The groupings for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia will be set once the tournament wraps up next month. “At every level when you put on the Canadian jersey its important, but this year at the mens worlds its very important,” Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson said Tuesday. “We want to win a gold.” General manager Kevin Lowe will continue to fill out his roster before the team travels to Zurich at the end of the month for a pair of exhibition games. Oshie scored in the shootout to give the St. Louis Blues a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night. Alexander Steen and Chris Stewart scored for St. Louis in regulation time (9-2-2). Jaroslav Halak stopped 25 shots and turned away three shots in the shootout. Rene Bourque and Michael Bournival scored for Montreal (8-7-1), while Carey Price made 30 saves. The Blues outshot the Canadiens 32-27 overall. St. Louis opened the scoring at 2:38 of the first period when Steen fired home his league-leading 13th goal of the season. Blues captain David Backes started the play by stealing the puck from defender Douglas Murray, who was playing softly behind his own net. Backes pushed Murray down with little effort and passed the puck to a wide-open Steen, who beat Price over his left shoulder. Montreal tied the game at 5:38 of the second period. Andrei Markov drove hard to the net, knocking Halak in the process. With Halak still shaken up, the puck fell to Bourque in the crease, making no mistake from close range. Bournival put the Canadiens in front at 14:49, his fourth of the year, when he intercepted a poor pass from Jay Bouwmeester in the St. Louis zone and quickly fired a slap shot between Halaks legs. Stewart levelled the score at 10:31 of the third period by deflecting a Kevin Shattenkirk blue-line shot off the post and in past Price. Tomas& Plekanec was awarded a penalty shot in the final minute of the third period, but missed the net high and wide.dddddddddddd Overtime solved nothing before Oshie scored the shootout winner. Former Canadiens netminder Halak returned to Montreal for just the second time since being traded to the Blues in 2010. The 27-year-old forward, who recently signed a 4-year contract extension with the Habs, has managed only one point in 15 games this season. Téma: Jak postupovat / o has seen countless Buffalo Sabres interim coach Ted Nolan spoke to the Buffalo News Wednesday and said he believes they should build their team around goaltender Ryan Miller, who is set to become an unrestricted free agency this summer. “You look at all the championship teams and it starts from goaltending out. … I prefer you build around him rather than use him as a pawn to try and get something to make you better,” Nolan told the Buffalo News. “You learn to deal with the now as a coach and weve got one of the better goaltenders in the world here and Id like to build around him myself.” Though Nolan said he does not discuss contracts with players. He did however mention he had spoken with President of Hockey Operations Pat LaFontaine about creating a culture that draws in the best players. “I talked to Pat about this and I said the one thing we want to do is create an environment where people want to come here and stay here,” Nolan said. “Hopefully he likes what were doing. You never know.” After the New York Rangers recent signing of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, Miller, Jaroslav Halak (Blues) and Jonas Hiller (Ducks) are the remaining top unrestricted free agent goaltenders. . PAUL, Minn. ANAHEIM, Calif. — Although Teemu Selanne has been playing in the NHL for more than two decades, he had never seen anything he could even compare to the goonery in the Anaheim Ducks latest victory. The Vancouver Canucks third-period antics aside, the NHL also hasnt seen much like these Ducks as they cut a swath through the league on their merciless winning streak. Corey Perry had two goals and two assists, Selanne had two goals and an assist, and the steamrolling Ducks beat Vancouver 9-1 Wednesday night for their 18th victory in 19 games. Nick Bonino scored also two goals for the NHL-leading Ducks, who earned their eighth consecutive victory by scoring a club-record six power-play goals against the NHLs best penalty-killing team. The Ducks got those opportunities thanks to a wholesale collapse by the Canucks, who picked up 58 penalty minutes in the third period with several old-time-hockey attempts to start a brawl. With four Canucks in the dressing room for misconduct, Vancouver gave a late seven-minute, two-man advantage to the Ducks, who scored twice to wrap up the highest-scoring performance in the franchises two-decade history. “What happened at the end, I havent really seen before,” said Selanne, who scored his 682nd career goal during the two-man advantage. “It was kind of weird. You dont want to finish the game like that … but this is still a confidence boost for us. Theyre a great team.” Andrew Cogliano, Jakob Silfverberg and Sami Vatanen also scored, and Frederik Andersen made 31 saves as Anaheim joined the 1967-68 Montreal Canadiens as the only teams in league history to win 18 times in a 19-game span. Vatanens score with 38 seconds left pushed the Ducks past the club-record eight goals, accomplished twice previously. Captain Ryan Getzlaf, rookie Hampus Lindholm and Vatanen had two assists apiece while Anaheim scored six power-play goals — one fewer than in their previous 15 games combined. “We just want to keep good habits and keep things fresh,” Cogliano said. “Obviously it got a little out of hand, and thats unfortunate. Ive been on the other side of that, and its not something thats fun.” The Ducks also improved to 20-0-2 at Honda Center, matching San Joses 2008-09 start for the longest home points streak to open a season in thhe last 34 years.dddddddddddd Zack Kassian scored for the Canucks in their seventh loss in eight games. Eddie Lack gave up three goals on 13 shots before getting chased early in the second period, and backup Joacim Eriksson was relentlessly battered in his NHL debut. “It got away from us,” Vancouver captain Henrik Sedin said. “Ive had a lot of disappointing losses. This was up there, but this was not a 9-1 game. This was not a 6-1 game. They had eight or nine minutes of 5-on-3. Theyre going to score when they get that.” Anaheim led 6-0 late in the second period, and the blowout got even uglier after the Ducks went up 7-1 in the third on Perrys 27th goal. Vancouvers Tom Sestito, Jannik Hansen and Kassian all got misconduct penalties with 7:11 to play, and Kevin Bieksa was sent to the showers moments later. “Im not even going to try to explain it,” Vancouver coach John Tortorella said. “One of those nights, so we plow along to our next game and get ready to play. … It does me no good, it does the players no good, to discuss anything that happened here.” Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau, who has seen countless minor-league shenanigans during a long hockey career, wasnt overly upset with the Canucks bush-league behaviour. “There was a lot of frustration on their part,” Boudreau said. “They just started punching our guys. It wasnt the brightest thing to do. What are the refs supposed to do? … It was just an unfortunate game for Vancouver. Im sure their next opponent is going to pay for that.” With just one loss since Dec. 3, Anaheim has opened a six-point lead atop the NHL standings on the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks, who will host the Ducks on Friday night. The Ducks would have to beat Chicago and St. Louis in back-to-back road games this weekend to match the 1967-68 Canadiens, who won 20 of 21. NOTES: Andersen filled in capably for Jonas Hiller, who sat out with an illness. Hiller has won 14 straight games, the second-longest winning streak by a goalie in NHL history. … The 23-year-old Eriksson, in his first North American season, is filling in for Roberto Luongo, who has been out since Jan. 4. … Selanne is 11th on the NHLs career goals list, trailing Mario Lemieux by eight goals for 10th. Téma: Jak postupovat / after catching his head awkward BUFFALO, N.Y. — Mike Smiths unwitting mistake gave the short-handed Buffalo Sabres a 2-1 overtime win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night. With 3:47 gone in overtime, Sabres defenceman Mark Pysyk took a shot that hit Martin Hanzal and became lodged in the back of Smiths jersey. The Coyotes goalie retreated into his crease, unknowingly carrying the puck across the line and ending the game. “I didnt feel it at all,” Smith said of the bizarre goal. “I didnt know what happened. I knew that puck went up in the air but had no idea where it went after that.” Ryan Miller made 36 saves for the Sabres, and said hes never seen anything quite like Mondays ending. “A little unlucky for Smith there,” Miller said. “I think hell be shaking his head for a while. Its a little bit of a Christmas present for us and well take it.” The Sabres started the game with just 16 skaters after a virus left Linus Omark, Cody Hodgson, Ville Leino, Marcus Foligno and Alexander Sulzer unable to play. Buffalo was only able to recall Pysyk and left wing Johan Larsson from its AHL affiliate in Rochester because the team was en route to the Spengler Cup tournament in Davos, Switzerland. Tyler Ennis also scored for Buffalo, which is 4-0-1 in its last five home games after starting the season 3-12-1 at First Niagara Center. The fans gave the Sabres several standing ovations throughout the contest, and the team went to centre ice to salute them after the game. “I play on emotion and when fans are just supportive like that, its a huge boost,” Sabres rookie centre Zemgus Girgensons said. “First 30 games fans were there for us but we didnt play well.” Hanzal scored for the Coyotes, who concluded a four-game road trip with a 1-1-2 record. Smith made 30 saves. Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said the odd ending fit his teams performance. “The game is an honest game,” he said. “If youre supposed to win, usually you can win. And we didnt deserve to win tonight, so those things happen.” Phoenix outshot Buffalo 15-3 in the first period, though the two best chances belonged to the Sabres. The Coyotes opened the scoring 19 seconds into the second period when Hanzal raised his stick to deflect Connor Murphys slap shot over Miller. The play was reviewed and it was determined Hanzals stick struck the puck below the height of the cross bar. Miller didnt like the call and directed blame to the NHL Situation Room in Toronto, which reviewed the goal. “It hit the top of his blade and his blade was up high,” the goalie said. “The puck wasnt rising, it was already over the crossbar in my mind so I think Toronto got it absolutely wrong.” Buffalo native and former Sabres left wing Tim Kennedy recorded an assist on the goal. Miller kept the deficit at 1 by coming out to the top of his crease to stop a high shot from Michael Stone. Girgensons was thwarted on a breakaway just two minutes later as Murphy grabbed the rookies stick before he could get a shot on Smith. There was no penalty on the play. Drew Stafford left the Sabres with 15 available skaters after receiving a five-minute elbowing penalty and game misconduct. Facing the boards to the right of Smith, Stafford swung his elbow backward at oncoming Oliver Ekman-Larsson and caught the defenceman in the face. The Sabres killed off 2 1/2 minutes of the major penalty before Hanzal took a roughing penalty. In the remaining 30 seconds, Smith stopped Otts slap shot during a 2-on-1 break. Buffalos penalty kill has been successful on 21 of its last 22 chances. “Short bench, all the penalties we had, it didnt seem like anything in the game was really going our way,” Girgensons said. “We just worked probably the hardest weve worked throughout the whole season and stuck to the system. Thats the way we won.” Ennis tied the score 14:01 into the third. Girgensons forced a turnover at the Coyotes blue line and found Ennis, who beat Smith for his eighth goal of the season. “The guy just fell and I lifted his stick and slid the puck through the two guys I was hoping it would go through and Ennis finished it really good,” Girgensons said. Jamie McBain had a partial breakaway in overtime but was stopped by Smith, who quickly had to make a second stop on McBain. The game ended moments later with Pysyks goal. “I just put it on net, figuring Id maybe get a rebound,” Pysyk said. “Just popped up right in the air and was lucky enough that he spun and it went right into the net.” Smith was embarrassed by his teams effort considering the Sabres line-up woes and an impending three-day break for Christmas. “That was embarrassing as far as Im concerned,” he said. “You go on a Christmas break, you have three days off and you come out like that? I think thats a bunch of garbage as far as far as Im concerned.” NOTES: The Sabres placed C Kevin Porter on injured reserve before the game and assigned D Chad Ruhwedel to AHL Rochester. … Phoenix scratched Gilbert Brule for the first time in three games. … John Scott played forward and defence for the Sabres. Téma: Jak postupovat / Africa for the first time. Som PARIS — Milos Raonic hopes his recent success on clay leads to a long run at the French Open. The Canadian star won his opening match at the second Grand Slam of the year on Sunday, beating Australian wildcard Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to reach the second round. Raonic, the eighth seed from Thornhill, Ont., needed exactly two hours to advance against one of the games rising young stars. He also beat an Australian opponent for the first time at a Grand Slam after losing to Carsten Ball at the 2010 U.S. Open and Lleyton Hewitt at the 2012 Australian Open. He won on his third match point, sealing victory with a 27th ace. Raonic, who came to Roland Garros from a Rome semifinal last weekend, finished with 50 winners and 30 unforced errors, breaking on four of ten chances. “I felt very good, I was able to do the things I wanted to do,” said Raonic, who next plays one of two Czechs, Lukas Rosol of Jiri Vesely. “In the first round you go in not knowing exactly how things are going to play out. When it mattered, I was able to put forward the right attitude and the right level of tennis. Im happy with that.” Raonic has a career record of 32-23 on clay courts, compared to 100-42 on hard surfaces that dont deaden his powerful serve. But Raonic had two quarter-final appearances as well as the Rome semifinal in four clay-court tournaments leading up to the French Open. Hes trying to go beyond the third round at Roland Garros for the first time in his career. Later Sunday, sixth seed Tomas Berdych beat Canadian qualifier Peter Polansky of Thornhill 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Polansky, ranked 137th and playing in only his sixth career singles main draw at a major, last played a Grand Slam at the 2010 US Open. He was successful on only one of six break points while committing 21 unforced errors with 15 winners. “Its good to be back in the main draw of a slam,” said Polansky. "I played well and enjoyed it. I was hoping to get a better draw, there are a lot of guys I could have beaten today. “I played well, I just came up a it short. But I take a lot of positives out of the last few weeks. Maybe I have more belief in my game now that Im older.” Raonic said that despite heavy conditions in wet Paris, the courts held up well compared to Rome. “Theyre quite similar, though here they can change a little bit more due to the cloud coverage and not really that much sun the last few days,” he said. "The ball wasnt bouncing as much as it had actually the last days on the outside courts. The 23-year-old Raonic used his experience against the young Australian, reducing Kyrgios to racket-hurling frustration after breaking immediately after losing serve in the second set. Raonic began the third set with a break for 2-0, lost it, but again gained the lead 4-2 on his way to victory. Raonic said that he was having trouble at times on serve, but managed to fight through the problem. “I was getting it together when it mattered, and thats all I can really ask,” he said. “There was some moments where I was losing a little bit of concentration on my level, and I was able to put it together when I was in the important moments.” After answering on-court questions in French, Raonic then said he would tweet a message in the language later. He said he would have the tweet proofed by an expert speaker before broadcasting it to his 143,000 followers. cheap nfl jerseys . A person briefed on the U.S. Olympic Committees decision-making process told The Associated Press on Friday that all four cities are still in consideration. The person requested anonymity because the USOC has not made an official announcement. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Olympics. The other three cities would be first-time hosts. But theres an arduous and expensive process facing any potential bid city before the International Olympic Committee awards the games in 2017. Over the next six months, the USOC will decide whether it even wants to try to host the Olympics. The last two U.S. candidates both suffered humiliating fourth-place finishes: New York for the 2012 Olympics and Chicago for the 2016 Games that went to Rio de Janeiro If the USOC goes ahead with the bid, the U.S. ccity would find itself in a spirited battle.dddddddddddd Paris, Rome, Doha and Istanbul are among those that could enter the race. The IOC has also long stated a desire to bring the Olympics to Africa for the first time. Some inside the USOC feel the time is right for a bid, now that the federation has made progress in shoring up some of its international relationships, which were frayed in 2009 when Chicago finished last in the voting for the 2016 Games. The USOC is waiting to see what sort of changes the IOC might make in the bidding process when it meets later this year. New IOC President Thomas Bach is asking the committee to build a new roadmap for the Olympics, and the way the IOC handles bids is expected to be on that agenda. “We clearly want to see output from that working group and what changes are adopted before we push the go button on 2024,” USOC chairman Larry Probst said earlier this week. Téma: Jak postupovat / ss they had a little debacle in N DETROIT — Mike Babcock insisted being a lame-duck coach next season for the Detroit Red Wings would not be a problem for him. Babcock has one year left on his contract, and told reporters on Tuesday that getting a new deal this off-season is not a priority. “When youre at the stage of my career that I am, Im real comfortable with whatever they want,” he said. "I want them to be happy. If theyre not happy, then Im not happy. “I can go year to year.” Babcock finished his ninth season as Detroits coach on Saturday at Boston, where the Bruins eliminated the Red Wings in Game 5 of their first-round series. He has won a franchise-record 415 games, a Stanley Cup and a pair of conference championships. He led Canada to a second straight Olympic gold medal earlier this year. “If you put down a list of the best coaches in the National Hockey League, hes on that short list,” Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. Holland said he has not begun talking to Babcock about negotiating a long-term deal. The Red Wings have Holland under contract for one more year with a team option for another year, and he is “assuming” to have talks with ownership about his future with the franchise this summer. Detroits decision-makers will also have some other topics to ponder, heading into the NHL draft in June and free agency in July. Daniel Alfredsson might be the only unrestricted free agent the team wants to re-sign. The 41-year-old forward chose to chase a Stanley Cup with a one-year deal after spending his entire career with the Ottawa Senators. Alfredsson, though, is not sure if he wants to return or retire. “Its going to be at least a few weeks,” he said. “You need time to get away from it. Ill talk to Kenny and Babcock later this week. Both sides want to know what the other side is thinking.” Unrestricted free agents David Legwand, Dan Cleary, Mikael Samuelsson, Jonas Gustavsson, Kyle Quincey and Todd Bertuzzi may have to continue their careers elsewhere. The 39-year-old Bertuzzi said he definitely does not want to retire if Detroit decides to let him hit the market. “Id like to keep playing,” he said. “I still feel like I can contribute.” The Red Wings are counting on their two stars, Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, to contribute more than they did during injury-shortened seasons. Zetterberg expects to return 100-per cent healthy after having back surgery two months ago. Datsyuk said he will soon find out if he needs to have surgery on his left knee. “A healthy Pav and Z makes everyone else score more,” Babcock said. “Z came back for two games (in the playoffs) and suddenly we have a power play. We didnt have a power play till that. To me those are the guys capable if healthy that can make everyone else around them better.” Nike Roshe Run Dames Sale . Téma: Jak postupovat / s since the beginning of the year," ATLANTA — Hank Aaron is still the home run king to many. Even baseball commissioner Bud Selig has a difficult time seeing it any other way. Aaron was honoured before the Braves game against the New York Mets on Tuesday night with a ceremony commemorating the 40th anniversary of his 715th home run, the one that pushed him past Babe Ruth and gave him the major league record. Aaron finished with 755 home runs, but was eventually passed on the career list by Barry Bonds, whose career was tarnished by steroids allegations. Bonds has 762 homers, but many baseball fans dont accept that number and stand by Aaron as the true record-holder. Speaking with reporters after the ceremony, Selig was asked about Aaron being called the true home run king. “Im always in a sensitive spot there, but Ive said that myself and Ill just leave it at that,” Selig said. During the ceremony Braves chairman Terry McGuirk said Aaron “set the home-run record the old-fashioned way” and added “You will always be the home run king of all time.” Retired Braves broadcaster Pete Van Wieren earned a big ovation when he said Aaron is “still recognized as baseballs true home run king.” Aaron, 80, was given a standing ovation in the ceremony before the game. Aaron broke Ruths record with his homer on April 8, 1974, off the Dodgers Al Downing. Downing attended the ceremony and threw out the first pitch. Some of Aarons 1974 teammates returned, including Dusty Baker, who was on-deck when the record-breaking homer was hit, Ralph Garr, Phil Niekro, Ron Reed, Marty Perez and Tom House, who caught the homer in the bullpen. Aaron thanked fans “for all your kindness all these many years.” Aaron, recovering from recent hip-replacement surgery, used a walker. “The game of baseball was a way that I relaxed myself each year that I went on the field for 23 years,” Aaron said. “I gave baseball everything that I had, everything, every ounce of my ability to play the game I tried to play to make you the fans appreciate me more. Thank you.” Selig, Aarons longtime friend, established the Hank Aaron Award in 1999 to honour the top hitter in each league. He called Aarons 715th homer “the most famous and treasured record in American sports.” Selig said Aaron was a worthy successor to Ruth as home-run king “because he is the living embodiment of the American spirit. … Baseball is forever our national pastime because of people like Henry Aaron.” The Braves wore their 1970s era white-and-blue uniforms, complete with small “a” caps, in tribute to Aaron. The Braves are wearing an Aaron 40th anniversary patch on their uniform sleeves this season. The numbers “715” were painted on the outfield grass, stretching from left-centre to right-centre. The Braves unveiled Aaron jerseys from other college and professional teams in the Atlanta area. Falcons owner Arthur Blank, former Georgia coach and athletic director Vince Dooley and former Georgia Tech coach Bill Curry were among those who stood with their teams jerseys adorned with Aarons name and No. 44. The outfield was filled with fans, each wearing blue 44 Braves jerseys and each holding baseball-shaped signs bearing numbers from 1 to 715. The future Hall of Famer told TSNs sister station in Quebec RDS on Monday that while Luongo and Montreal Canadiens netminder Carey Price have been the countrys top two candidates, the Vancouver Canucks goaltender should get the edge for the starting job. “(Price) and Roberto Luongo are the two strongest candidates since the beginning of the year,” Brodeur told RDS after the Devils 3-2 loss to Montreal. In 24 games this season, Luongo has an 11-8-5 record with a 2.41 goals-against average and .911 save percentage with two shutouts. Téma: Jak postupovat / increase to the overall pot wil NEWCASTLE, England — Juan Mata inspired Manchester United to a 4-0 victory at Newcastle on Saturday, securing a 10th away win in the Premier League that belies the champions poor home form. The 25-year-old Spaniard, who joined United from Chelsea in January, scored twice, including directly from a free kick, to take his tally to three goals in his last two games. “I think he has made us better,” United manager David Moyes said. "He hasnt had the goals in the earlier games, but I really thought he played fine in the games. “But recently he has started the get the goals and, more importantly, assists as well. Over the last few seasons in the Premier League, Juan Mata is one of the best assist-makers and he has always got himself a good tally of goals.” Showing that United can cope without injured striker Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, Javier Hernandez and substitute Adnan Januzaj added further goals in the second half. Moyes United moved up to sixth place, while Newcastle stayed ninth. The priority for United is to follow up a 1-1 home draw with Bayern Munich with a victory in Germany on Wednesday to reach the Champions League semifinals. Moyes made wholesale changes for the trip to Newcastle with only three of the players who started against Bayern Munich in midweek — Phil Jones, Antonio Valencia and Marouane Fellaini — retained with one eye on Munich. However, once Mata had fired them ahead from a 39th-minute free kick which Magpies manager Alan Pardew felt should never have been awarded, United never looked back. Mata added a second from close range five minutes after the restart and Javier Hernandez put the result beyond doubt 15 minutes later, before substitute Januzaj wrapped up a comfortable win with the help of a deft assist by the Spain international. It handed Newcastle a seventh loss in 10 league games. “Its tough. The IceHogs scored three unanswered goals, capped by Jeremy Morins third-period goal, to beat the Marlies 3-2 in American Hockey League play Wednesday.CALGARY — On the night Calgary honoured former great Joe Nieuwendyk, an inspired new generation of exciting young centres led the Flames to a thrilling come-from-behind victory. Joe Colborne scored twice and Sean Monahan had the other in a furious third period comeback that saw Calgary overcome a 3-1 deficit with less than nine minutes to go to edge the New York Islanders 4-3 on Friday. Colborne was not yet born when Nieuwendyk scored 51 goals as a rookie in 1987-88. Nonetheless, the touching ceremony made an impact on the Calgary-born 2008 first round pick acquired from Toronto at the start of the year. “You forget how good he was,” said Colborne, whos first career two-goal game gives him seven goals on the season. "You hear his points and stuff and you almost forget until they walk you through his career, and that was really cool for me. “I might have felt it a little more than some of the other guys because he was one of my favourites growing up.” Colborne got the Flames comeback started at 11:29 when he knocked in a rebound off the end boards after Mark Giordanos point shot missed the net. After Monahan went forehand to backhand on a pretty play in-close to tie it at 14:22, Colborne completed the comeback, deflecting in Giordanos slapshot at 15:41. “Joe Nieuwendyk started the game and Joe Colborne decided that he would finish the game,” said Flames coach Bob Hartley. The win gives Calgary seven in its last eight games at the Scotiabank Saddledome. “Obviously its always fun after a win but after a game like that when youre down and you come back, it feels that much better,” said Monahan, who leads the team with 19 goals. “After those couple goals by us, it felt like they stepped back a little bit. At that point when you have momentum like that, it almost feels like that next goals coming and thats what happened.” Finnish rookie Markus Granlund, with his second goal in as many games, also scored for Calgary (25-31-7). The Flames, who had eight rookies in their line-up for the first time since Dec. 10, 1996, play in Vancouver on Saturday. Kyle Okposo, Colin McDonald and Brock Nelson scored for New York (24-33-9). The Islanders are 1-1-1 with one game to go on a four-game road trip. The Islanders also play in Vancouver next but not until Monday. Hartley said it was some words from veteran players at the second intermission that got his team going again. “We had a good little talk in the locker room and the boys got back and they were on their toes again,” he said. &qquot; When we work, when we drive the net, were a pretty solid team.ddddddddddddI dont care how many kids we have in the line-up. Its all about passion. “We never quit. Im pretty proud of my boys.” The third period unfolded just like it did Thursday night in Edmonton when the Islanders blew a two-goal lead in a 3-2 loss. “We just stopped playing,” said Okposo, who leads the team with 26 goals. “We gave up a goal and we stopped moving our feet and stopped going after them. We dominated the game for 50 minutes. Theres no reason we should lose that game.” Tied 1-1, the Islanders took their first lead early in the second period on an uncharacteristic giveaway by Giordano, which led to a two-on-one goal finished off by Okposo. New York took a 3-1 lead to the third period. “We were playing well until 10 minutes left and they get one, they find a bounce off the end boards and score and we just pucker up,” said Islanders defenceman Thomas Hickey. It is the 12th time the Islanders have lost a game in which they held a two-goal lead. “You look at it and were in the playoffs if we dont do that. But you cant even make that excuse. The good teams find a way to win those and were not doing that right now,” said Hickey. After winning his first NHL game on Wednesday, Ortio had 23 saves in his third NHL start to improve to 2-1-0. Nilsson made 19 saves for New York and fell to 2-4-2. The Flames are 9-4-0 in their last 13 games. “Tonight was far from being the perfect game, lets be honest. It was an exciting game but Im not happy,” said Hartley. "But that third period, just like the fans, Im thrilled. This building was electric in the third period. It was such a great atmosphere on the bench. “To feel the fans, it seemed like the entire crowd was sitting on the bench with us.” Granlund opened the scoring at 2:01 with the second NHL goal of his career and second in as many games, this time shorthanded. Téma: Jak postupovat / ho logged almost 28 minute TORONTO – With seven seconds remaining, the game all but wrapped up and moments after draining the biggest shot of the night, Kyle Lowry stepped to the line. As he recorded his 23rd and 24th points of the evening, a segment of the sellout Air Canada Centre crowd expressed their appreciation for the Raptors point guard with a smattering of MVP chants. Even Lowry, in the midst of a career and possible All-Star year, laughed it off. “If I win the MVP youll see pigs fly,” he joked after leading his team to a bounce-back 94-89 victory over the Timberwolves Friday. Lowry connected on a season-best six three-point shots, none bigger than the one he hit from the corner with just under 15 seconds left to give the Raptors a seven-point lead and put the Wolves comeback hopes to rest. He wont be lifting an MVP trophy anytime soon – though he did ascend to 10th on NBA.coms “Race to the MVP Ladder” this week – but he is well on his way to representing the Raptors in New Orleans for next months All-Star Game. In nine games this month, the eighth-year vet is averaging 17.8 points and 8.0 assists while shooting a remarkable 52 per cent from long range. “Hes playing at a high level,” Dwane Casey said. “This is the highest level hes played, the best I think hes played. I dont think hed tell you that.” Casey was right, he wouldnt. “I feel good,” Lowry responded, asked if hes playing his best basketball, also citing a productive half-season stretch he had with the Rockets in 2011-12. “Hes a tough competitor, plays hard all the time,” said Rick Adelman, current Wolves bench boss and Lowrys former coach in Houston. “Hes jumped around to different situations but he was really good for us in Houston and it looks like hes playing that way now.” Adelman, who Lowry called his favourite coach, gave the Philadelphia-native his first shot to start and play big minutes in the NBA. In Lowrys final season as a Rocket – with Kevin McHale replacing Adelman on Houstons bench – he appeared to be on the verge of a breakout. He averaged 15.6 points and 7.6 assists prior to the All-Star break and before a mysterious bacterial infection derailed the rest of his season. The Wolves coach said he never had a doubt that Lowry would get back to and even eclipse that level but still, many questioned whether he could be a positive leader at the point guard position. “Hes grown into that role of being a leader, hes matured as a man,” Casey said. “Hes doing all the right things and those were the only question marks with Kyle as far as the other coaches are concerned.” Lowry credits his personal success to his off-court growth as well as the work he put in during this past offseason. “Im just growing up,” the 27-year-old said. “Ive got a son, a wife, a family, its one of those things where you just hit that moment and its just like, youve got to grow up sometime. This summer was a big summer for me. I got a chance to really work as hard as I wanted to and I got a chance to relax my mind and clear it and it seems to be working.” With Rudy Gay – his best friend – in Sacramento, Lowry has finally found a balance between utilizing his ability as a scorer and facilitating a productive offence, also excelling on defence and leading the NBA in charges taken (he drew his 24th early in Fridays game). But more than anything else, its his leadership that continues to turn heads, rightfully so. “I didnt do nothing,” Lowry said, asked about the teams performance against Kevin Love and Nikola Pekovic, one of the toughest frontcourt duos in the league. “The big fellas did a great job tonight, they redeemed themselves. JV, Amir, Chuck, Patt, those guys played huge tonight and all I can do is treat them to lunch one of these days on the road.” Lowry, like the rest of the team, recognized the importance of this game following one of their most disappointing efforts of the season in Boston on Wednesday. “We definitely wanted to redeem ourselves after that Boston game,” said Amir Johnson, who added 19 points and held Love to 16 on 7-of-19 shooting. “We made it a goal to get stops, get every rebound and we did that tonight.” The Raptors allowed an opponent season-high 19 offensive boards in Boston and appeared to be headed for another long night against the one of the NBAs topped ranked rebounding teams. Minnesota grabbed 10 off the offensive glass in the first half but was held to just two the rest of the way as Johnson and Jonas Valanciunas battled Love and Pekovic, keeping them both in check. “We had a bounce-back as a team from the other night,” Casey said. We were disappointed that we were ambushed in Boston." “[It was] just a bounce back game for us and we needed it,” Lowry echoed. “Tonight we did a great job of bouncing back against a team thats really good, I mean theyre a talented team, well coached. We did a good job of executing our game plan, they made it close but we pulled it out.” Nike Roshe Run Kopen . The Vancouver right-winger scored his first and second goals of an injury-marred season as the Canucks defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 in a shootout Wednesday night. Chris Higgins had the only goal in the shootout as Vancouver (30-28-10) handed the Jets (30-28-9) their fifth straight loss. Burrows was playing in only his 36th game this season after breaking a foot to start the season and then breaking his jaw in December. “I hit a few posts, a few saves, a few rebounds, a few empty nets that should have gone in,” Burrows said. "Its a fine line between goals and not. “Tonight I was able to get a few. Even though, honestly, I could have got four, I think. I hit the post, a few tips that they blocked and a two-on-one in the first my stick breaks.” But Vancouver suffered another injury blow when centre Ryan Kesler left the game in the second period after a knee-on-knee collision with Jets centre Jim Slater. Canucks head coach John Tortorella said Kesler will be sent back to Vancouver for tests while his teammates keep travelling to games against Washington, Florida and Tampa Bay. “Hes going to get some imaging and well have a better indication of where hes at, but hes out for a while,” Tortorella said. Slater said he didnt intentionally try to hurt Kesler. “I thought I had him lined up, he kind of bailed there at the last second there,” Slater said. "I didnt stick my knee out or anything in his path, wasnt leading with my leg. I thought I actually took the worst of it. “Obviously, if hes hurt bad, I feel bad about that. It wasnt any intent. I thought I had him lined up and at the last second he tried to jump out of the way.” Higgins scored the decisive goal with some quick stick-handling on his way toward Ondrej Pavelec, flipping the puck by him after the netminder went down. Andrew Ladd scored his 18th goal of the season and Michael Frolik added his 13th that put the Jets ahead 2-1 early in the third period.dddddddddddd Burrows had tied the game 2-2 at 11:17 of the third period. Vancouver is now 2-4-1 in their last seven games. The game was a big improvement for the Canucks, who collapsed on Monday and gave up seven goals in the third period in a 7-4 loss to the New York Islanders. Pavelec stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, while Eddie Lack made 31 saves for Vancouver. Lack had let in six goals in the embarrassing loss to the Islanders. “I just needed a big bounce-back game and I was really happy we got the win,” Lack said. The Canucks now have 70 points and Winnipeg 69 as they battle for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Dallas holds the last wild-card berth with 74 points. Phoenix has 73. The Stars and Coyotes were idle Wednesday night. The Jets are 0-2-3 in their last five and host the New York Rangers on Friday. “We got opportunities to get the second point there the last couple games. Weve got to start getting them,” said Jets rookie defenceman Jacob Trouba, who logged almost 28 minutes of ice time. “Those are points were letting slip away. Its good that we get one and we look at the positives and try to think about that, but at the same time its at the back of your mind — youve got to get those points that youre letting go.” Vancouver outshot Winnipeg 14-9 in the scoreless first period, but the Jets outshot the Canucks 16-5 in the third. Vancouver was 0 for 5 on the power play and the Jets went 0 for 4. “I thought we played hard right on through, and thats two out the last three games weve played well in the third period so good for them,” Tortorella said. “Theyve hung in, theyve hung together. Losing a big guy like Kes, I thought they stuck together as a group. It was real nice to see.” Notes: Henrik Sedin was marking a major milestone, playing in his 1,000th NHL game, all with Vancouver. Téma: Jak postupovat / alled Howard. "I let the rock go, HOUSTON — James Harden faced the throng of reporters waiting at his locker and exhaled heavily after the Houston Rockets slipped by the New York Knicks on Friday night to end a two-game skid. “Its a huge sigh of relief,” Harden said. “We found a way. It wasnt pretty. It wasnt the prettiest win, but at the end of the night a win is all that matters.” Harden scored 37 points and Aaron Brooks made a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to lift the Rockets to a 102-100 victory. The Knicks had a chance to tie it at the end, but Iman Shumpert missed a shot before Andrea Bargnani grabbed a rebound and dished it to Beno Udrih, whose running jump shot rolled in and out of the basket at the buzzer. Several Knicks put their hands on their heads in disbelief as they watched the ball spin out. Udrih and J.R. Smith both missed 3-pointers for the Knicks with under a minute remaining. Brooks grabbed the rebound on the second one and was fouled by Udrih to set up the game-winning free throws. Smith admitted after the game that he made a mistake in taking his shot, which came with 19.9 seconds remaining. “Honestly I thought we were down two when I shot the ball,” Smith said. "I started hearing Tyson (Chandler) say: “No, no, no dont take the shot.” But at that point it was already released … it was just bad basketball IQ by me." Carmelo Anthony couldnt believe they had another play where they should have held the ball instead of taking an ill-advised shot. In a game last month against Milwaukee, Bargnani jacked up a 3-point attempt with 11.9 seconds left and New York up by two points in overtime. The Bucks made a shot on the other end to force a second overtime, but the Knicks were able to rebound for a double-overtime win in that one. “Yeah, yeah, it was kind of like deja vu,” Anthony said when asked if that play reminded him of Smiths shot. New York coach Mike Woodson said Smiths miss was just one of many opportunities they didnt take advantage of Friday night. “We had our shots and I think we compounded it too by fouling instead of making them go through our defence,” he said. Shumpert, who scored a career-high 27 Thursday night, led the Knicks with 26 and Anthony added 25. Anthony returned on Thursday night after missing three games with a sprained left ankle and tweaked it late in that win. He was still struggling with it Friday night, and winced almost every time he landed after jumping in the second half. “I think it was just the back-to-back and not giving it a chance to rest,” Anthony said. “It was just aching at times, at moments throughout the game.” Shumpert, who was 6 for 6 on 3s, hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to two points before Chandler hit two free throws to tie it at 100 with 1:02 left. Chandler finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Houston used a big run to start the fourth quarter and erase an eight-point deficit. The teams exchanged leads several times after that, but neither team led by more than a basket in the quarter before Harden scored five straight points to make it 100-95 with 2:23 remaining. Chandler Parsons added 17 points and 11 rebounds for Houston, Dwight Howard had 15 points and Jeremy Lin scored 14 against his former team. The Rockets opened the final period with a 10-1 run to take an 83-82 lead with about nine minutes remaining. Harden scored 11 points, powered by three 3-pointers, in the opening minutes of the second half to stretch Houstons lead to 61-56 with about eight minutes left in the third quarter. Anthony, who scored 45 points against Houston earlier this season, responded after that by making the first four points of an 8-0 run by New York to put the Knicks up 64-61. The game was tied at 66-all when New York scored seven straight to regain the lead 73-66. New York led 81-73 entering the fourth quarter thanks in part to 13 points by Shumpert in the third. The Knicks led by one with about 7 1/2 minutes remaining in the second quarter when Houston used a 10-2 run to take a 39-32 lead. Chandler received a technical foul in that span when he got tangled up with Howard and swung an elbow. Lin then made a nifty reverse layup and the ensuing free throw and Houston capped the run with an alley-oop dunk from Harden to Terrence Jones. New York got going after that, using an 11-2 spurt, with consecutive 3-pointers from Anthony, to regain a 43-41 lead. Parsons made a pair of free throws with seconds left in the second quarter to lead 48-47 at halftime. Neil Harrison, a two-time world champion with skip Ed Werenich (1983 as the lead, 1990 as the alternate), died early Monday at the age of 64. In his prime, he was one of the games best leads, and was a trailblazer for front-enders who specialized in the positions. He earned six Brier Purple Hearts, representing Ontario, and was elected to the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in 1991. “Hell be greatly missed, obviously,” said fellow Hall-of-Famer Russ Howard, who played against Harrison for many years in Ontario, and played two seasons with him in the late 1990s. “I truly believe he was the first of the guys in the modern era of curling to say that he was going to perfect his position. It used to be that your lead was your worst curler, where you put your weak link. But he was so good – he made a positive difference on every team he played for.” Howard said Harrison, who also won 10 Canadian firefighters curling championships and was the captain of the victorious Team Norrth America team at the 2011 WFG Continental Cup in Camrose, Alta.dddddddddddd, caught on to some of the nuances of curling, most of which are now commonplace, long before his peers “We got to a final for $40,000, and I was throwing my draws heavy all week. But Neil has his head down and hes pounding it as hard as he can. Well, the thing ends up right on the button. We come off the ice to have a beer, and I say to Neil, Why were you sweeping that? I slid out heavy, and I was heavy all week, but he told me that I slid heavy, but there was no rotation on the rock, so he knew it was going to die. That was Neil; he was ahead of his time in recognizing that sort of thing.” Harrison was equally in demand off the ice, said Howard with a laugh. “Nobody could hold court like Neil Harrison,” he said. “He was one of those guys who everybody wanted to sit down and have a beer with.” cheap jerseys whole… jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ints for Jake Gardiner in D For the first time since the preseason, there is a team other than the Indiana Pacers at the top of the TSN.ca NBA Power Rankings. Entering the All-Star break, the Oklahoma City Thunder have won 14 of 16 games to take over top spot, even without injured star point guard Russell Westbrook. Making a big move up, with the return of point guard Chris Paul, the Los Angeles Clippers jumped from 10 to four, and the surprising Phoenix Suns moved from 15 to 12. 14-5 in the past 19 games, the Brooklyn Nets are up to 15, from 19, their highest ranking since the preseason. The Minnesota Timberwolves are down two starters and fall from 11 to 14 and the Atlanta Hawks, losers of five straight, fall from 14 to 17. Down to their last option at point guard, and losers of four straight by an average margin of 25 points, the Denver Nuggets slide from 16 to 19 and the Philadelphia 76ers, losers of seven straight, drop from 26 to 29. The Toronto Raptors are down from one spot, from nine to 10, effectively losing ground to the Clippers upon Pauls return. It was the kind of surreal moment that made life playing at home all the more real. “That never wouldve happened in Anaheim, California,” Holland, a native of Caledon, told the Leaf Report with a chuckle. “That was pretty cool.” No longer on the west coast with the Ducks, the 22-year-old enjoyed the biggest night of his NHL career in front of the hometown crowd on the Saturday night stage. With his parents and childhood skills coach (Joey Simon from Powerhouse Hockey) in the stands, Holland scored twice and added a helper as Toronto stunned the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks 7-3 at the ACC. It was the clubs first win in regulation since Nov. 19 and third in the past 20 games. Moved up in the lineup onto a unit with Joffrey Lupul and Mason Raymond – David Clarkson was serving the first of a two-game suspension – Holland scored his fourth this season and first of the game on an early power-play, notching his second on a tic-tac-toe feed from Lupul and Raymond. He would add an assist on the second of two goals from Lupul. “Theyve given me a good opportunity here and I think that as long as Im playing my game I think I have the ability to play at this level,” said Holland, acquired from Anaheim in mid-November. “Obviously playing with guys like Lupul and Raymond is going to help me stick around too.” A first round pick of the Ducks in 2009, Holland nearly doubled his season output with the standout performance against Chicago, now at five goals and seven points in 16 games this season. With injuries plaguing the Leafs at centre ice – Dave Bolland and Tyler Bozak are both sidelined – opportunity is there for someone like Holland to grab hold of. To this point, he had offered only brief glimpses of the skill his pedigree would infer. But with more opportunity – a career-high of over 19 minutes – he was able to show it off in a big way against the Blackhawks. “Im just kind of approaching it like its a job and it is a job,” Holland said. As to the chance to play at home, after bouncing between outposts in Syracuse, Norfolk and Anaheim, Holland said its been more comfort than distraction. “If anything I think it almost relieves pressure,” he said. “Youve got more of a support network around you. Its a thrill to play in front of them every night. Going back to minor hockey when your parents came to every game, driving you there and stuff, and now they can come to every home game here. Its a good feeling.” Five Points 1. Response from St. Louis Only two days before shocking the Blackhawks at home, the Leafs were embarrassed on the road by the Blues. It was their eighth loss in 10 games and among the worst efforts of the year. “Off our performance in St. Louis we could not have anything close to that again,” said Randy Carlyle following the win against Chicago, the leagues top team again this season. "They werent very proud of our performance. They knew that we didnt do a lot of things that we set out to do. “I thought that our hockey club responded the way they needed to respond,” he continued. “They took responsibility for our actions and thats a good sign. But the most encouraging thing for us tonight was our work ethic and we stuck to our system and played it.” Trekking through their most arduous portion of the schedule – which has included the Sharks, Bruins, Kings, Blues, and Blackhawks – the Leafs now face another top team in Pittsburgh on Monday. “It doesnt get any easier,” said Lupul, who had four points on Saturday, “but certainly winning a game against the top team in the league gives you a little bit of confidence so hopefully we can run with it.” 2. Cycle Offence Though they generated the bulk of their offence off the rush, the Leafs did manage to sustain bursts of the cycle game Carlyle has been pleading for. The fourth goal of the evening, and fourth this season from Nik Kulemin, found its way into the back of the net off such an attack. “Weve been striving for that,” said Carlyle. “And in the games that we are effective it seems that we have more of that in the hockey game. Thats really what were trying to do is were trying to eliminate a one-dimensional rush team.” That rush game was certainly effective, notably the line of Holland, Lupul and Raymond. “When you start to wear teams down, if you play more in their zone, your rush game becomes more effective,” Carlyle said. “The players will tell you, they never get tired playing in that zone. Theyre not receiving the game. When youre attacking and youre creating more offensive zone time its a better feeling.” The Leafs also benefited on this night from scoring beyond their top unit. Phil Kessel would score the seventh and final Toronto goal, his 17th this season, but the remainder of the offence came from the second and third lines. Pegged to slow down the Blackhawks imposing top trio of Patrickk Sharp, Jonathan Toews, and Marian Hossa, the third line of Kulemin, Jerry DAmigo, and Jay McClement scored twice while holding their opponents off the scoresheet.dddddddddddd “They did a heck of a job for us,” said Carlyle. 3. Playing at Home In addition to the unlikely meet and greet with the fan on the GO Train, Holland said the second surreal moment of playing at home came when he put on the Leafs jersey for the first time, one he wore as a fan growing up. “I kind of let that sink in for a couple seconds there because that was a dream come true for sure,” he said. Holland often made it down to Leafs games as a kid, mostly at the old Maple Leaf Gardens. “Some of my fondest memories were actually at the Garden,” said Holland. “I was in there bleeding blue and white with the fans growing up.” 4. Defensive Confusion A frequent frustration for Carlyle in recent weeks has been the rising tide of goals scored against from the critical areas or the zone surrounding the goal. “Its taking care of the front of your net before anywhere else,” John-Michael Liles said of such improvement, prior to Saturdays game. “Ultimately, most teams are trying to draw you out of those critical areas so they can get the puck into those critical areas. Its no different than any other sport.” Liles compared the tactic to soccer or basketball (where quality outside shooters draw defenders from the basket), noting the desire of an offence to space the defence out and away from the respective goal. “Its that movement (of) trying to confuse,” he said. Defensive improvement stands high atop the Leafs priorities. During their ongoing struggle, theyve allowed three goals or more in 13 of 20 games, losing all but two of those games (including on Saturday). “Were trying to implement a defensive zone coverage that we can hang our hat on,” said Carlyle. “Once you play better defensively then you start to become more of a team that (attacks) versus receiving the game. Thats really what has happened with our hockey club, I would say specifically in the last 15 games, is weve been receiving more than weve been attacking.” 5. Shake-Up For the first time all season neither Paul Ranger nor Mark Fraser was in the lineup for the Leafs. A new-look third pairing of some speed and some skill saw John-Michael Liles paired with Morgan Rielly. The adjustment appeared an early success. “I thought they did a good job from a standpoint of we played our system and we moved the puck pretty much worrisome-free other than about five or six minutes in the second period,” said Carlyle of the group. The Toronto defence has been a source of instability all season. Only one pairing has remained a constant from start to present: Carl Gunnarsson and Dion Phaneuf (save for Phaneufs recent two-game suspension). Asked prior to Saturdays game if he would consider splitting the two as he did last season – and thus balancing the group –Carlyle said no. “Its been an experiment that we felt it failed,” said Carlyle. “We werent happy with that. I would say at this point we think that theyre our go-to pair. Right now, I dont think thats a possibility for us … But coaches change their minds.” Searching for balance, Carlyle split Gunnarsson and Phaneuf for the first 28 games last season with Phaneuf playing alongside Korbinian Holzer and current Blackhawk Michael Kostka. By mid-March though he abandoned the plan and reconnected the teams usual top pairing. Bonus Point – Bolland Update A bit of positive news amid a difficult stretch for the Leafs saw Dave Bolland off crutches this week and walking around the Air Canada Centre on Saturday morning. “The update is that hes progressing along at the expected rate,” said Carlyle without offering any concrete timeline. “Theres no great difference in where hes at versus where we thought he was going to be. Hes not ahead of schedule, hes right on schedule right now.” Stats-Pack 7 – Goals for the Leafs against Chicago, a season-high. 3 – Points from Peter Holland, a career-high. 4 – Assists for Mason Raymond against Chicago, a career-high. Raymond also surpassed the 22 points he had in 46 games last season. He now has 24 points in 34 games. 19:22 – Ice-time for Holland, also a career-high. 5 – Points for Jake Gardiner in December. He had six points combined in October and November. 1 – Career NHL goal for Jerry DAmigo. DAmigo also added an assist against the Blackhawks. 2 – Goals from the Leafs third line, who also held Chicagos top unit scoreless. 9 – Games without a goal for Joffrey Lupul prior to a two-goal outing on Saturday. Lupul hadnt scored since Nov. 9 in Boston. Special Teams Capsule PP: 2-4Season: 24.3% (3rd) PK: 1-2Season: 76.7% (27th) Quote of the Night “You guys cant see it, but Im just going crazy inside right now.” -Jerry DAmigo, moments after scoring his first career NHL goal. Téma: Jak postupovat / for the club where he t SAN FRANCISCO — While chatter has swirled about Jim Harbaughs future with the 49ers in recent weeks, wide receiver Anquan Boldin has secured his status in San Francisco — and even credited the coach for his decision to come back. The franchise gave him a few million other reasons, too. The 49ers signed Boldin to a two-year, $12 million contract with $9 million guaranteed Monday, keeping quarterback Colin Kaepernicks top option from last season and one of Harbaughs favourites from hitting free agency. “Hes a guy I had a real good relationship with,” Boldin said about Harbaugh on a conference call with reporters. “Me and him were able to talk about anything. And I just like his demeanour, the way he approaches the game. Hes a guy that wants to win. Im the exact same way. So I think we mesh pretty good.” Boldin, who was set to become a free agent next week, led San Francisco with 85 catches for 1,179 yards to go with seven touchdowns last season. He was traded from John Harbaughs Ravens to the 49ers in the off-season for a sixth-round pick after helping Baltimore win the Super Bowl. While the salary cap strapped Ravens failed to make the playoffs, the 49ers finished 12-4 during the regular season — in part because Boldin filled the void created by an off-season torn right Achilles tendon that sidelined Michael Crabtree for the first 11 games. Boldins performances earned him the Bill Walsh Award, given to the team MVP by the coaches. Boldins deal locked up one of San Franciscos top off-season priorities and briefly quieted the questions about Harbaughs future with the 49ers after reports surfaced in recent weeks about the team fielding trade offers for the coach from the Cleveland Browns, a possible rift with general manager Trent Baalke and even problems with players. Boldin said he doesnt pay much attention to NFL news in the off-season because hes focused on his family and charitable foundation and “at this time of year, people grab at whatever.” But he admitted hed been following the Harbaugh saga. “When I did hear about it, I kind of laughed,” Boldin said. "I dont think anybody in our locker room has an issue with coach Harbaugh. The way our locker room is built, we have an open-door policy. If anybody has a concern or wants to voice their opinion, theyre more than welcome to. “There have been times when we have voiced our concerns as players, and coach Harbaugh has listened to us and taken into consideration how we felt as players. So I dont think theres any rift between players and coaches, particularly coach Harbaugh.” Boldins return to San Francisco was not all that surprising. Harbaugh said at last weeks NFL Scouting Combine that the franchise was determined to re-sign the wide receiver, and Boldin had repeatedly said he wanted to come back. The sides hashed out the deal before Boldin could become a free agent for the first time in his 11-year career. “We are pleased that Anquan has chosen to continue his career as a 49er,” Baalke said in a statement. “He is a consummate professional whose love and respect for the game provide a tremendous example for all players. Anquan has been a very productive player throughout his career and we look forward to his future contributions to our team and community.” Boldins transition to the 49ers seemed seamless. Boldin, now 33 years old, was at his best in his debut for San Francisco when he caught 13 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown in a 34-28 win over Green Bay. He then capped his season with his second-best game with nine catches for 149 yards and a score in a Week 17 win over Arizona that clinched the fifth seed for San Francisco. In three playoff games, Boldin had 16 catches for 227 yards and a touchdown. The 49ers lost in the NFC title game to the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. Boldin, drafted by Arizona in the second round out of Florida State in 2003, played seven seasons for the Cardinals and three for the Ravens. The three-time Pro Bowler has 857 receptions for 11,344 yards and 65 touchdowns in his career, which he believes is far from finished. “Physically, I feel fine,” he said. “I feel as if I can play five more years. So thats not a problem for me. I feel great. But well see how it goes.” AP Sports Writer Janie McCauley contributed to this story. Téma: Jak postupovat / n the road and are 8-18 as the guest this se PRETORIA, South Africa – The chief defence lawyer in Oscar Pistorius murder trial sought on Wednesday to undermine the prosecution testimony of a couple who say they heard a womans screams and gunfire the night the athlete fatally shot his girlfriend. Lawyer Barry Roux said telephone records will show that the banging sounds the neighbours heard were instead a distressed Pistorius hitting a toilet door with a cricket bat to get to fatally wounded girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Charl Johnson and his wife Michelle Burger have testified to hearing a sequence of events in the pre-dawn hours of Valentines Day last year that involved a woman screaming, a man shouting for help and then the sound of gunshots. Cross-examining Johnson on the third day of the blockbuster trial, Roux says call records will show Pistorius called an estate manager at around 3:19 a.m. and soon after he bashed in the door with the bat. In Johnson and Burgers testimony, they say they heard what they described as shots straight after making a call to security at 3.16 a.m. The similar times show the sounds were the bat on the door, Roux argued. “There is only one thing you could have heard, because it coincides precisely,” Roux said to Johnson. “That was the time that he (Pistorius) broke down the door (with the bat).” Johnson replied, addressing the judge: “My lady, I am convinced the sound I heard was gunshots.” “I understand,” Roux said in the exchange, suggesting Johnson had convinced himself they were shots. Throwing doubt on the witnesses recollection of the sequence is crucial for Pistorius defence after the state maintained there was a loud argument on the night he shot Steenkamp through a door in his bathroom and screams and shouts before a gun was fired. Pistorius team wants to show the screams were Pistorius calling for help after the accidental shots. After a break, prosecutor Gerrie Nel asked for permission to stand down Johnson until Thursday to get more records. The judge agreed and the case moved on to its fourth witness. Pistorius, 27, has said he shot 29-year-old Steenkamp by accident, fearing she was a dangerous intruder in his home. The case has transfixed people around the world, and the proceedings are being broadcast on television, adding to the scrutiny of South Africas criminal justice system as well as the character of a globally admired athlete whose career peaked when he ran in the 2012 Olympics. Pistorius was born without fibula bones because of a congenital defect and his legs were amputated when he was 11 months old. He has run on carbon-fiber blades and was initially banned from competing against able-bodied peers because many argued that his blades gave him an unfair advantage. He was later cleared to compete. He is a multiple Paralympic medallist but he failed to win a medal at the London Olympics. Lawyer Roux earlier attacked the testimonies of Johnson and Burger by also saying similarities in their accounts indicated that they had aligned their versions at the expense of truth. In his testimony Johnson told the court in Pretoria, the South African capital, that he heard the cries of a terrified woman and shooting around the time that Pistorius killed Steenkamp. Johnsons wife, Burger, had given similar testimony and at one point broke down in tears because of what she said was the memory of the terrified screams of a woman. Roux said there were differences between the statements that Johnson and Burger had given to police after the shooting, and testimony that they gave in court. Both the statements and the testimony shared similarities, Roux said, implying that the couple had contaminated their evidence by talking through what they were going to say. “You could just as well have stood together in the witness box,” Roux said. “What do you say to that?” The tart assertion drew a caution from Judge Thokozile Masipa, who told Roux he had gone too far. Roux contended that crucial elements in the testimony of the couple were missing in their earlier comments to police, including the statements that they heard a womans screams rising in anxiety and intensity and that they heard the womans voice “fading” after the last in a volley of gunshots. Johnson suggested that he and his wife were more expressive while testifying in court than when providing information for a police document. “I would venture a guess that its the way you verbally tell the story,” he said. “Theres a lot more emotion involved … whereas the statement is more factual.” At the beginning of proceedings on Wednesday, prosecutor Nel said Johnsons telephone number had been read out in court a day earlier. Johnson then said he had since received a “large amount” of missed calls. He described one voicemail message as saying: “Why are you lying in court? You know Oscar didnt kill Reeva. Its not cool.” ___ Gerald Imray is on Twitter at www.twitter.com/GeraldImrayAP . – Phil Macks penalty kick with no time remaining completed a remarkable comeback Sunday as Canada defeated Samoa 22-19 to finish third at the USA Sevens — its best ever finish at an IRB Sevens rugby event. Schumacher has been placed in a medically induced coma to relieve pressure on his brain, which suffered bruising and bleeding when the retired seven-time world champion fell and struck a rock Sunday while skiing during a family vacation. “We cannot predict the future for Michael Schumacher,” Dr. Jean-Francois Payen, the doctor in charge of Grenoble University Hospitals intensive care unit, said at a news conference. “He is in a critical state in terms of cerebral resuscitation,” said Payen, the chief anesthesiologist treating the 44-year-old German driver. “We are working hour by hour.” Schumachers wife, Corinna, daughter Gina Maria and son Mick were at his bedside. “The family is not doing very well, obviously. They are shocked,” his manager, Sabine Kehm, told reporters. Schumacher earned universal admiration for his uncommon driving talent, which led to a record 91 race wins. His single-minded dedication to victory sometimes meant he was denied the same affection during his career that he received Monday. Schumacher “gave the image of someone indestructible, powerful,” Frances four-time F1 champion Alain Prost said on iTele TV channel. “Its a banal accident compared to what hes done in the past. Its just a dumb thing that ended badly.” Schumacher and his 14-year-old son were skiing Sunday morning in the French Alpine resort of Meribel, where the family has a chalet. He fell and hit the right side of his head on a rock. By wearing a helmet, Schumacher had given himself a chance of survival, Payen said, though the protection was not enough to prevent serious injury. Gerard Saillant, a trauma surgeon who operated on Schumacher when he broke his leg in a 1999 race crash, was at the hospital as a visitor. He told reporters that Schumachers age and fitness should work in his favour. Schumacher, who turns 45 on Friday, retired from the track for the second time only last year, after a three-season comeback. Still, the hospitals neurology team, which is recognized as among the best in France, was cautious about Schumachers prospects. Doctors lowered his body temperature to between 34 and 35 degrees Celsius (93.2 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit) as part of the coma, which essentially rests the brain, slowing its metabolism to help reduce inflammation after an injury. The hospital, in a city that is the gateway to the French Alps, sees a large number of skiing accidents every year. Schumacher has been seriously hurt before. In addition to the broken leg in a crash at the 1999 British Grand Prix, he also suffered neck and spine injuries after a motorcycle accident in 2009 in Spain. An expert skier, Schumacher fell in a section of trails that slice down tthrough a vast and, in parts, very steep snowfield.ddddddddddddAlthough challenging, the snowfield is not extreme skiing. The runs are broad and neatly tended, and the ungroomed area in between — where the resort said Schumacher was found — is free of trees. “He was in the deep snow. But it was not an off-piste track,” Kehm said, suggesting Schumacher had not taken undue risks. “They were skiing on pistes, but in the moment that it (the accident) happened, it was not on the piste.” Meribel resort officials said Schumacher was conscious when first responders arrived, although agitated and in shock. After the fall, Payen said Monday, Schumacher was not in a “normal state of consciousness.” He did not respond to questions, and his limbs appeared to move involuntarily, the doctor said. He was airlifted to a local hospital and then later brought to Grenoble. Doctors said that stopover was typical and did not affect his condition. The French prosecutor in Albertville has opened an investigation into the accident, according to the Mountain Gendarmerie in Bourg-Saint-Maurice. The goal is to determine the circumstances and cause of the accident. Formula One drivers and fans rushed to wish Schumacher a quick recovery. “Like millions of Germans, the chancellor and members of the government were extremely dismayed when they heard about Michael Schumachers serious skiing accident,” German Chancellor Angela Merkels spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said in Berlin. Sebastian Vettel, the Formula One racer for whom Schumacher was a boyhood idol, told German news agency dpa: “I am shocked and hope that he will get better as soon as possible.” Ferrari, which Schumacher raced for, also expressed its concern. Company President Luca di Montezemolo and race team leader Stefano Domenicali were in contact with the family, the company said in a statement. Former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa, who himself recovered from life-threatening head injuries at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2009, wrote on Instagram: “I am praying for you my brother!! I hope you have a quick recovery!! God bless you, Michael.” British former F1 champion Jenson Button posted that “Michael more than anyone has the strength to pull through this.” Some fans gathered outside the hospital Monday. Nuravil Raimbekov, a student from Kyrgyzstan who is studying in Grenoble, said Schumacher has been an inspiration to him. “Im worried, of course … But I still hope, and I will pray for him,” he said. During his career, Schumacher set an array of Formula One records. After initial success with the Benetton team, winning his first two championships in 1994 and 1995, Schumacher moved to Ferrari. There, he helped turn the storied Italian team into the sports dominant force. After initially retiring in 2006, he made a comeback in 2010 and raced for three years with Mercedes. Téma: Jak postupovat / s should be fixed. This will HARRISON, N.J. — With replacement referees handling the games, there was bound to be some controversy in Major League Soccer this season. It happened in Week 2. Vicente Sanchez scored on a penalty kick in the 72rd minute after a questionable decision by the substitute referee and the Colorado Rapids and new coach Pablo Mastroeni opened their season with a 1-1 tie with the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. Substitute referee Alan Kelly awarded the penalty kick after defender Jamison Olave used his chest to knock a much smaller Marvin Chavez to the grass as he took a pass from Sanchez. “If its against you its a tough call,” Mastroeni said. “If its for you, you are OK with it. I think referees are out of our control.” The substitute referees are working the games because the Professional Referee Organization, which manages on-field officials for Major League Soccer, has locked out officials from the Professional Soccer Referees Association. The two sides have failed to reach agreement on a contract after the officials formed a union last year. Kelly told a pool reporter that Olave challenged Chavez from behind and initiated the contact, a decision that brought boos from the crowd of 20,542 at Red Bull Arena who earlier had thought that Thierry Henrys 57th-minute goal would be the winner. “I dont mean to be blunt, but in terms of the questions thats the straight forward answers I can give,” Kelly said. Red Bulls coach Mike Petke didnt like the decision but he wasnt going to draw a fine from the league by criticizing it. “Listen, its the game,” Petke said. “I mean what am I going to say about the penalty kick? Perhaps if the guy was Olaves size he would not have gone down like that. I dont know? Olave looked to step up and stand his ground and keep him in front of him and got him. The referee made a decision. Its unfortunate for us, fortunate for Colorado. You get away from it, move on from it.” The 6-foot-3 and 210-pound Olave, who seemed shocked by the call, left the locker room and was not available for comment. Sanchez deposited the kick from the spot into the right corner of the net. Red Bulls keeper Luis Robles did not have a chance to stop it. “I spoke to the ref afterward and he said, He was too physical coming from behind him,” Robles said. “I have to respect that.” The Red Bulls, the defending Supporters Shield trophy winners, were trying to bounce back from a dismal season-opening performance in 4-1 loss at Vancouver last weekend. Henry, who did not play in the season opener because it was on an artificial surface, headed a brilliant crossing pass by Lloyd Sam under rookie goalkeeper John Berner. It was his 42nd goal for the Red Bulls, second on the career list behind Juan Pablo Angel (58). “There is no panic,” Henry said about the slow start. “We have to go back to the film this week and do better because it obviously was not enough to win the game today.” He had no comment on the referees decision. New York had two chances to win in the five minutes of injury time. Eric Alexander was wide with a shot in the box and Berner, who played last season at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, made a diving save on another header by Henry. “To say I wasnt on the edge of my seat of out, if not out of it, would be an understatement,” said Mastroeni, who played 11-plus seasons with the Rapids and returned after last season with several club records, including most games played. “Thats the beauty of the game. It can all come down to the last minute, the last second, thats why its exciting.” Robles had kept the Red Bulls in the game in the first half, making five saves, including a finger-tip stop on a 35-yard shot by Nick LaBrocca that caught the goalkeeper a little too far off his line. Mastroeni was named the Rapids head coach last week, replacing Oscar Pareja, who left in January to take the same job with his former club, FC Dallas. Mastroeni was in charge of the squad through the preseason. . PAUL, Minn. cheapa…] . Marian Gaborik had two goals and an assist and Martin Jones made just 17 saves to record his fourth shutout of the season as the Kings snapped a three-game losing skid with a 3-0 victory over the lowly Oilers on Thursday. Lee doubled and scored in his debut, Buerhle struck out a season-best eight over 7 2-3 innings and Miami beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-0 Thursday to split the four-game series. My uncle Rolly would say “a tie is like kissing your sister” and though I did not have a sister, and kissing anyone was a wholly unappetizing prospect, I got his drift. Nobody is happy with the outcome. To its credit, in the late 1990s, the spry brain-trust at the National Hockey League recognized this fundamental drag on its product and vowed to improve a flawed system. Various solutions and quick-fixes were considered in the ensuing years, and the League, largely during semi-regular work stoppages, decided on a blended approach. (This new three-pronged approach, despite coinciding with league expansion and record revenues, would trigger the erosion of my interest, until I eventually stopped watching entirely.) Change Number One: Four Skaters and a Goalie The number of skaters decreased to four a-side during the overtime period, opening up offensive manoeuvrability and theoretically ending more games with game-winning tallies rather than endless dump-and-chase neutrality. Verdict: Wow. This was a major move, altering the five-on-five structure basic to the sport, and it was a winner. Instead of labouring through increased late game conservatism, skilled players could find themselves better able to deke and shimmy and strut their capabilities, particularly in the games most crucial moments. It also encouraged the reversing of a trend which had taken hold across the league, one where teams were playing “not to lose” and overtime periods were getting increasingly dump-and-chase ho-hum. Overtime would be meaningful again! Sha-la-la-la! Success. Change Number Two: If At First You Dont Succeed, Shoot Again The NHL introduced the controversial, internationally-tested shootout as a means of concluding deadlocked matches. Already in use at NHL All-Star Games, the League took a baby step, opting for three shooters per side, rather than the five per side standard in international play. One in seven games ended in a tie in 2003-2004, so this was going to have a major impact. Verdict: Surprisingly decent move. Fans get a thrill and hopelessly tied games get a victor. Two for two, by my count. But the NHL is not in the leave-well-enough-alone business. In classic League fashion, a third branch of tinkering was offered up, one in which the basic worth of winning or losing would be altered. It is this final alteration that persists to today, defining the current system, and for this hanging-by-a-thread fan, produces a result which is laughable and has firmly pushed me to the periphery of support. Change Number Three: The Three Point Game Shudder. In the former system, a win was worth two points for the victor, zero points for the vanquished. A tie meant a point to each side. Two points per game to be won, lost or split. In the current system, two points continue to be the victors spoils, but depending upon how the loser loses, the losing team may be awarded one or zero points. The pertinent extrapolation — particularly in a conference-based playoff system — is to recognize that some games are then worth three points and other games worth two. This imbalance is a black eye on the game which needs immediate attention. The rule change emerged from what was termed the “Dead Puck Era” or “The Decade Hockey Turned To Crap”. Overtime periods had become interminable with each side playing for the tie rather than chance going home pointless. So the NHL made tie games at the end of regulation worth one point to each side to encourage vigorous overtime play for an additional point. The change did not have the desired outcome. The risk-averse playing just starts earlier. Now the second half of the third period is the play-it-safe spot. (For those following at home, the second half of the third period was traditionally also known as the “end of the game”.) So now this “end of the game” segment is like a Benjamin Moore product demonstration. Not coincidentally, since the current system launched in 2005-06, there has been a major weakening in the Mike Gallay-watching to hockey-on-television corollary. Whatever, It All Shakes Out in the End If the very nature of consolation points doesnt enrage you, consider this: not only should the Los Angeles Kings not have won the Stanley Cup in 2012, they should not have even been in the playoffs.dddddddddddd In 2011-12, the Kings finished the regular season in the 8th seed of the Western Conference. Their record of 40-27-15 really meant they finished games 40-42. In 10th place languished the Dallas Stars (42-40) and in 11th, the Colorado Rockies* (41-41). In any season prior to the three point game initiative, the Kings would not have been in the post-season. (I am an indefatigable purist in some regards.)(*I realize if that was truly the case I should refer to them as the Quebec Nordiques.) This is not a one-off situation. It happened to Vancouver and Los Angeles in 2005-06. To Colorado and Montreal in 2006-07. To Carolina in 2007-08. Dozens of teams have received unmerited seedings over the years, all because of the preposterous three point game. Et tu, Baseball? Whats that gang? You all are expanding to 30 or more teams?Hey, we can too!Sure weve heard of Atlanta. The NHL has long been a follow-the-leader organization which makes the three point game more puzzling. It has no relevant precedent. MLB games cannot finish in ties and, bolstered by its non-contact, non-cardiovascular setup, teams may play endlessly into the night. Hell, if necessary, theyll just keep playing tomorrow. Quite reasonably, the NHLPA would not approve potentially endless overtime periods because of potential injury and fostering competitive imbalance (ie. when a rested team plays a team which last night played seven periods). In the NBA, there are no ties and overtime periods are rare and captivating. Hardwood scoring is more plentiful than hockey scoring, so the likelihood of limitless overtime periods is slight. In the NFL (AKA “the league that gets things right”) surprisingly there is allowance for ties, but league-wide there have been only two in the past five years. The anomaly of the football tie makes it bizarre and accepted as it functions more as a novelty than a drag on competitive balance. If every team averaged even one tie per season, oh yes, the NFL would have torched it long ago. Dumping & Chasing Dreams I try to get excited for hockey. I remember my youth, endless slapshots against a laundry room wall. I check out the standings to see who is jostling for—nope, cant do it. Right now, RIGHT NOW, of the 30 teams competing only 7 have losing records. Last year, by seasons end, same result, only 7 had losing records. In 2009-10, only 20% of the league had a losing record. Stop this madness. Its humiliating when grown men playing a grown mans game require the systemic equivalent of an orange slice and a plastic participant trophy. Are savvy Hockeytown fans sincerely fooled that their beloved Red Wings 30-24-13 record doesnt mean their team is a 30-37 loser? Their skaters headed to the locker room showers pissed off 37 times this year. Fact. Deep breath. I have heard all the reasons, some logical, some inebriated, on how to remedy this situation. The League and the PA and the broadcasters all have a say. But the solution is barely a tweak on what exists and would solve everything: Ten minute overtimes with four skaters a-side and a best-of-5 shootout. Winner gets two points. Loser gets a Tim Hortons special. Fans get a better reason to spend hundreds of dollars to attend. If you cannot win a game after seventy minutes then you earned the uncertainty of a shootout. The shootout, exciting as it is, might as well be five shooters a-side to give it more weight and the fans more thrills. The League only introduced regular season overtime in 1983-1984. Crucial, fundamental changes like this happen frequently. When the three point game was introduced it was to be rid of ties, to be rid of the indecision of such an outcome, but we wound up with a greater ingrained indecisiveness. This can be fixed. This should be fixed. This will improve the game. It might even make me forgive what those morons did to the conferences. Gallays Poll #3 If you were the NHL commish (my condolences), how would you remedy the current point system? (A) Leave it as is because I value tradition and systemic imbalance.(B) Take Gallays suggestions to make every game worth 2 points. 1 Winner. 1 Loser.© Go back to the system with the ties we all loved so much. Everyones a winner.(D) Abandon points altogether for a ranking system based entirely on scrapping. Téma: Jak postupovat / ey . As the Toronto Argonaut Each week, well take a look at some top performers from the CFL, with an eye to looking ahead to some matchups that could be favourable for TSN Fantasy Football, CFL Edition, presented by Joseph Abboud. Here are some of the best from Week Eight and players to watch for Week Nine: TOP PERFORMERS Stefan Logan, RB, B.C. (194 YDS, 1 TD, 24 touches at Toronto) – No Andrew Harris, no problem for the Lions, who turned Logan loose against the Argos Sunday and watched the 5-foot-6 runner go for nearly 200 yards, pushing Logan to fifth in the league in rushing yards through the first eight weeks, with 376 yards on the ground, a 5.4 yards per carry. Rob Bagg, WR, Saskatchewan (90 YDS, 1 TD, 6 REC vs. Montreal) – The veteran Canadian could be on his way to his best season, particularly if his recent numbers hold up. Over the past three games, Bagg has 244 yards receiving on 16 catches and now leads the Roughriders with 359 receiving yards on the season. Ricky Ray, QB, Toronto (49-for-72, 478 YDS, 5 TD, 2 INT vs. Winnipeg and B.C.) – The first game of the week, against Winnipeg, went much better for Ray and the Argos, than Sunday nights game against B.C., but the overall total made for a productive week for Ray, who is now the leagues leader in passing yardage, with 2,165, seven yards ahead of Winnipegs Drew Willy. Curtis Steele, RB, Toronto (188 YDS, 2 TD, 27 touches vs. Winnipeg and B.C.) – A part-time back who had not recorded 10 touches in a game since last August, Steele had 119 yards and a couple of scores on a dozen touches against Winnipeg, then added 69 yards on 15 touches against B.C. PLAYERS TO WATCH IN WEEK NINE Jon Cornish, RB, Calgary – Slated to return from a concussion, the reigning CFL Most Outstanding Player, could make his return to the Stampeders lineup at Ottawa, to face a Redblacks team allowing a league-high 121 yards per game on the ground. If Cornish somehow isnt ready, the Stampeders can turn to Hugh Charles, who hit the ground running for the Stampeders, rushing for 102 yards on 14 carries against Hamilton last week. Matt Carter, WR, Ottawa – Despite a critical fumble against Edmonton last week, the Canadian wideout is emerging as a threat in the passing game, catching eight passes for 172 yards in the past two weeks, after 10 catches for 95 yards in the previous five games. His 267 yards receiving counts as a career high and hes likely to keep getting more looks from QB Henry Burris. Duron Carter, WR, Montreal – As much as the Alouettes passing game has been a mess, averaging a league-low 179 yards per game through the air, Carter is starting to make an impact, catching 17 passes for 181 yards in the past two games. As the Toronto Argonauts prepare to face their hated enemies from down the QEW, the Hamilton Tiger Cats, in this Sundays Eastern Final, theyre faced with something they havent experienced all season – a healthy receiving corps.RENTON, Wash. — Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Sidney Rice tweeted an apparent goodbye after a report about his pending release. Rice tweeted on Friday afternoon saying the No. 12 would “remain on the left side of my chest no matter what! Grateful for the opportunity to share so many special moments w yall.” The tweet seemed to be in response to an ESPN report that Seattle intended to release Rice. The team said no rosster move has been made and the NFL transactions report showed no roster move Friday.dddddddddddd Releasing Rice would not be surprising. He is scheduled to make $8.5 million in 2014 and Seattle could use the cap savings in its attempts to re-sign Michael Bennett and extend Earl Thomas. Rice has been with Seattle since 2011. He has caught 97 passes and had 12 touchdowns in his three seasons with the Seahawks.
