LOUIS — St. Louis Cardinals cleanup hitter Matt Holliday will miss four or five days with an injured right hand, hurt while taking practice swings in the on deck circle. General manager John Mozeliak says Holliday has an inflamed tendon in the middle finger. Speaking Thursday, Mozeliak said Holliday, batting .295 with 22 home runs and 74 RBIs, would be re-evaluated early next week. The Cardinals were 4 1/2 games behind Atlanta for the National League wild card and begin a four-game series Friday night at NL East-champion Philadelphia. Holliday was injured in the ninth inning Tuesday night and removed for a pinch hitter. Lance Berkman batted cleanup in Wednesdays 3-2 victory at Pittsburgh and Allen Craig started in left field, Hollidays position. wholesale jerseys . The Impact will need to contend with the Central American heat along with a raucous crowd in El Salvador when the Major League Soccer squad takes on C.D. FAS on Wednesday. Due to strict CONCACAF stadium requirements, FAS is unable to compete on its usual turf in Santa Ana. Instead, the match will be held in the substantially larger Estadio Cuscatlan, a 53,400-seater in the nations capital. Knowing just how loud and disruptive the FAS faithful can be, Impact midfielder Maxim Tissot is preparing for an intense atmosphere. “I heard about them, and its intimidating,” Tissot said in a recent interview. “Itll be tough there, with both the opposing team and the referees. We have to be ready.” In the clubs prior Champions League appearances in 2008 and 2013, Montreal travelled to Nicaragua, Mexico, Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guatemala. The Impact are 2-1-1 all-time in the Champions League in Central America. This will be the clubs first visit to El Salvador — Central Americas smallest nation — where the fans are known for their passion and sometimes unruly behaviour. In addition, Impact manager Frank Klopas will have to watch the match from the press box. Two weeks ago, when 10-man Montreal beat FAS 1-0 at Saputo Stadium to take a three-point lead at the top of their group, Klopas was ejected for leaving his technical area late in the game. The ejection came shortly after defender Hassoun Camara was shown a straight red card for a studs-up slide tackle on FAS midfielder Raul Renderos. Camara will also miss Wednesdays match due to suspension. After the ejections, FAS pressed for the equalizer, but could not capitalize with the man advantage. Striker Marco Di Vaio had the games lone goal. “Were going with confidence to El Salvador because we know that its going to be an important game for us,” Di Vaio said. “We have to go there to try to win. We arrive there with more confidence for sure because we came out of a bad time and we know that everything now is simpler.” Montreals meagre victory at home against the groups weakest team could be its undoing. The Impacts offensive woes proved costly lastt year when goal differential was a factor in their group stage elimination.dddddddddddd This fall, Montreal (1-0-0) will finish group play with a home-and-away series against the New York Red Bulls, the third and final team in Group 3. New York has yet to play a Champions League match this year. Only the winner of the group will advance to the eight-team knockout stage. FAS (0-1-0) is one of the most popular soccer teams in El Salvador. With 17 national titles, it is the countrys most decorated club. FAS is currently sixth in the Salvadoran Premier League with four points from three games. In 1979, the club won the CONCACAF Champions Cup in what later became the Champions League. Since the tournament changed name and format in 2008, FAS has never made it past the group stage in three occasions. On Wednesday, FAS will look for another standout performance from goakeeper Luis Contreras, who made six saves against the Impact two weeks ago. If not for Contreras, Montreal would likely have run away with the game early on. FAS will also benefit from a full team, which wasnt the case at Saputo Stadium. Due to visa issues, the team from Santa Ana travelled to Canada with just 14 players and without its head coach. The Impact, meanwhile, will have a slightly different look for the road game. Montreal finally added Argentine midfielder Ignacio Piatti to its roster after a lengthy courting process. Piatti made his first start for the club on Saturday before being substituted shortly after halftime. His arrival may not help the struggling team in MLS play, but the 29-year-old could help Montreal make a push in the Champions League. The Champions League is an annual club tournament that involves 24 teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Montreal is representing Canada in the competition after winning the Amway Canadian Championship in June. Notes: The Impact trained in Miami on Monday before leaving for El Salvador on Tuesday. … The distance between Montreal and San Salvador is 3,825 kilometres. … In 2008-09, when still in the North American Soccer League, the Impact reached the Champions League quarter-finals. … Montreal ended a seven-game losing streak in MLS with a 1-0 victory over Chicago on Saturday. Téma: Jak postupovat / t go into extra time The Montreal Impact signed Uruguayan forward Santiago González via Discovery process on Friday. The deal will be finalized upon receipt of his international transfer certificate and his visa. González played the first three years of his career with Institución Atlética Sud América, in Uruguays first and second divisions. He joins the Impact after finishing first on his team with five goals and two assists in 14 games, all as starter, and 1,204 minutes in the 2013 Apertura of the Uruguayan Primera Division. “Santiago is a young striker that has already played three professional seasons,” said Impact Sporting Director Nick De Santis. “He is a dynamic forward that moves very well and can play with his back to the goal. It will take a bit of time to adapt, but I think he can bring a different element to the team.” During the 2012-13 season, the 21-year-old helped Sud América earn promotion to the first division after finishing atop the Uruguayan second division in scoring, recording four goals and three assists in 18 games and 1,034 minutes. He was also part of Club Atlético River Plates Academy, in Montevideo, his hometown club playing in the Uruguayan first division. At the international level, González played two games with the Uruguayan U17 National Team at the 2009 FIFA U17 World Cup in Nigeria. cheap nfl jerseys . It got them a much-needed win Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild after they blew a two-goal, third-period lead. Defenceman Andy Greene scored from in close 2 minutes into the extra period and the Devils snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Wild in Zach Parises first game back in New Jersey against his former teammates. “Weve asked our D all year to create offence for us,” said DeBoer, whose team has lost all eight shootouts this season and an NHL-record 12 straight dating to last season. “I think we have a little more urgency in overtime as a group because of our shootout record. There isnt any secret about that, so you get a little more aggressive.” Adam Henrique and Patrik Elias each had three assists and combined to set up Greene. Elias carried the puck from his own zone into the Wild end and sent a pass through the crease that Henrique nudged toward goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. Greene got the rebound and scored his second game-winner in overtime this season. Greene took a chance on the play. “I actually kick it out of the corner to start the rush and I thought about changing, but then I kind of saw we had a three-on-two,” Greene said. “I supported it and the puck obviously squirted through their back door and I got some good lumber on it and put it home.” Greene didnt care that the win wasnt pretty. “It doesnt matter at this point,” he said. “As long as we get ourselves a chance to get two points in a game, who cares how it happens? Two points is two points.” Despite the win, the Devils are five points out of the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 12 games left in the regular season. “I liked how we played tonight,” DeBoer said. “As long as we can stay fresh and energized and bring that game, theres no reason we cant keep winning.” Michael Ryder, Mark Fayne and Jaromir Jagr also scored for New Jersey, which played with a lot more energy with their playoff hopes fading in the wake of the losing streak. Parise, Mikael Granlund and Matt CCooke tallied for the Wild, who have points in 17 of 21 games.dddddddddddd The Wild, who have lost their last four games that have gone to overtime or a shootout, were limited to 10 shots in the first 40 minutes, but rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the third period to tie the game at 3-all on goals by Granlund and Cooke. Granlund closed the gap to 3-2, beating Cory Schneider with a bad-angle shot from low in the left circle midway through the period. Cooke tied the game with 4:32 to play, deflecting a slap shot by Marco Scandella 2 seconds after a penalty to Travis Zajac expired. Parise, who was booed every time he touched the puck, got the Wild on the scoreboard with a power-play goal when he deflected a shot by Ryan Suter 21 seconds into the third. “To come back in the third period down against these guys, down 2-0 and 3-1, and we were able to claw back and get a point. There is a little bit of a silver lining,” Parise said. “Weve got to turn that corner and start winning some of these games that go into extra time.” Ryder opened the scoring with 3:02 left in the first, snapping a 23-game goal drought by taking a pass from Elias and ripping a shot past Bryzgalov from between the circles. The Devils had a chance to add to their lead when Wild defenceman Nate Prosser was given a somewhat iffy five-minute major and a game misconduct for elbowing Devils forward Tim Sestito behind the Minnesota net. Minnesota, however, had a great chance to tie the game early in the major when Parise had a breakaway after defenceman Jon Merrill fell at the Wild blue line. Parise skated in alone but Schneider smothered his shot. Minnesota survived the power play, but New Jersey went up 2-0 midway through the second period on Faynes short-handed goal, which was set up by Henrique and Elias. Parises 24th goal of the season cut the deficit to 2-1, but Jagr got his 23rd of the season a little more than three minutes later on a power play. NOTES: The Devils dressed seven defencemen after making forwards Damien Brunner and Steve Bernier healthy scratches. … Sestito had to be helped off the ice after the major penalty and he did not return. … This was the Wilds first game in New Jersey since Jan. 4, 2011. Téma: Jak postupovat / 8 while hitting 44 homers with BRISTOL, Tenn. – If two rain delays totalling more than five hours werent enough, the water-logged race at Bristol Motor Speedway had a battery fly out of a car and spread a toilet paper-looking substance all over the track. And that wasnt even the strangest occurrence Sunday. Moments before Carl Edwards closed in on what should have been the white flag lap, the caution lights were accidentally turned on from the flag stand. As NASCAR tried to figure out what was going on, the sky opened up and prevented the race from resuming. Edwards was awarded the win under caution — a victory he was headed to before the mishap — and celebrated his third career win at Bristol with his trademark backflip on the slick concrete. “Oh, man, I thought, This is stupid. I shouldnt do this … Its awfully glossy. It might be slick,” he said. “I didnt want to stick it perfectly and have my feet go that way and break my arm on the concrete. That would have been terrible. I was actually really nervous about that.” NASCAR vice-president of competition Robin Pemberton said a person in the flag stand leaned on the manual override switch and that turned on the caution lights. Six seconds after the lights were turned on, the flag man waved the yellow flag. Pemberton said that the flag man can wave the caution flag without a call from series officials in the tower if they see a proper reason. “We were scanning cars and spotters, and theres some of us in the tower that only heard it after the teams were talking about it because we were looking at other things around the racetrack,” Pemberton said. Said Edwards: “No harm, no foul, lets act like it just didnt happen.” The victory makes Edwards the fourth winner in four races this season and, under NASCARs new rules, is supposed to get him into the 16-driver Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. “Just to have a win this early, man, it is a huge relief,” he said. Five other things from water-logged Bristol: BUMP-AND-RUN: With Chase berths conceivably on the line with a win, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was salivating at a shot at teammate Edwards when the final caution came out at Bristol. But he knew if the race went green again, his only chance would be the old Bristol bump-and-run, which hasnt been used in years. Its a risky move to do to a teammate, but owner Jack Roush said he expected nothing less from Stenhouse. “When it comes time to really charge for the checkered flag, there are no team orders, there are no rules,” Roush said. “I expect them to race one another as they expect to be raced, not only with one another, but with everybody in the garage. I expect Ricky is as fierce a competitor as there is out there, and if his car has the speed in it and he can get to the car in front of him, particularly the short track, youd bump-and-run and take the prize if you could. Id be disappointed if he didnt have that in his mind.” AWESOME ARIC: Aric Almirola finished a career-best third — and Richard Petty Motorsports teammate Marcos Ambrose was fifth as four Ford drivers placed in the top-five — but Ambrose felt he could have gotten more. He restarted second behind Carl Edwards with 70 laps to go and had one solid chance to take the lead. If hed gotten past Edwards, he just might have grabbed his first career victory. “These races are so hard to win, and it was a great day for us,” he said. “Im not disappointed at all with third, but when you see it and you can taste it and its that close, you wonder what could have went different.” SMOKE RISES: Tony Stewart salvaged what looked like it was going to be an awful weekend with a season-best fourth-place finish. It came after he qualified 37th, needed two Saturday practice sessions with crew chief Chad Johnston to make significant improvements to the car and needed the entire race to work his way into the top-10. “Its a step in the right direction for sure. This is a big one. If you come out of this place with a top-five youve had a good day,” he said. DISSAPOINTED WITH THE FINISH: Kyle Larson flirted with the lead and was in position to race for the win until the race-changing caution with 77 laps remaining. He went to pit road third, took four tires and restarted ninth. So even though he finished a career-best 10th, the rookie wasnt thrilled. “Its crazy to think its kind of a disappointing finish for the way we ran for most of the race, but all in all it was a good race,” Larson said. DALES BAD DAY: Dale Earnhardt Jr.s strong start to the season finally came to an end at Bristol, where he finished 24th after opening with a win and two second-places. Although his Chevrolet wasnt great all weekend, his trouble Sunday was compounded by two left-front tire issues. Once he was out of contention, he was basically just making laps for the bulk of the race. It cost Earnhardt the points lead, which went to Brad Keselowski. Earnhardt now trails Keselowski by 10 points. Making his 13th PGA Tour start, the 26-year-old Hadley had four birdies in an early five-hole stretch and also birdied the par-4 14th in wind gusting to 25 mph. “It was frustrating, to be honest with you, even though I was playing well, just because I hit it so well today and I missed quite a few putts, a lot of putts the last 11 holes,” Hadley said. "But you know what, were right where we need to be. Im leading and thats great. “Is hard to be satisfied with how well I hit it, but we need to keep in perspective that were leading and were in a great spot for tomorrow.” Hadley had a 16-under 200 total. “Im going to go at just about every flag,” Hadley said. “You got to stay aggressive out here. Ive learned that. For me, if I kind of take the foot off the pedal a little bit, Ill kind of lose focus and I wont be as sharp as I would like to be, so I plan on being really aggressive.” Danny Lee was a stroke back after a 66. “It was another good day of golf,” Lee said. “I was hitting it really well at the beginning and putting is good. I think everything is going really nicely at the moment.” Hadley won twice last year on the Web.com Tour, taking the Rex Hospital Open in his hometown of Raleigh, N.C., and the season-endiing Web.ddddddddddddcom Tour Championship. In Raleigh, he began the final round five strokes behind Lee and rallied to beat the New Zealand player by two strokes with a 64. “I was thinking about that a little bit,” Hadley said. “Danny and I are great friends and were going to have a blast. I think were playing twosomes tomorrow, so well have a blast out there, and hopefully we can kind of duel it out. Obviously, I would love to come away with a victory.” Jason Gore and Jonathan Byrd were tied for third at 14 under. Gore shot 66, and Byrd had a 67. Gore pointed to a recent talk with former basketball star Charles Barkley for his strong play. “I just met Charles that day, and he goes, So whats been wrong the last few years?” Gorse said. “I said, You know, I kind of just lost my love for the game. He goes, Well, why? I said, Man, I have a family. He said, Man, I aint buying that. … He goes, Why would you not want to provide your family a better life, and doing something you love. And it was one of those things, it wasnt Nostradamus or anything like that. He didnt break any barriers there, but it did kind of hit a hard string and made me stop to think why would I not want to be better for them and provide better, and lucky to get to do what I do.” James Driscoll, the second-round leader after matching the tournament record with a 63, had a 75 to drop into a tie for 20th at 9 under. OKLAHOMA CITY — Russell Westbrook apparently is a quick healer. The All-Star point guard, sidelined for the past six months with a knee injury, was set to return to the Oklahoma City Thunder lineup for Sunday nights home game against the Phoenix Suns, weeks earlier than expected. Westbrook was slated to start instead of easing back into action. “Rehab is a tough process,” Westbrook said. "Im going to continue to rehab throughout the season, before the game, whatever I need to do to stay healthy throughout the year. Its a tough process, but Im thankful for . everybody that supported me throughout the process. “Im just happy to be back on the floor.” Before Sunday, Westbrook hadnt played since tearing the lateral meniscus in his right knee during the second game of the NBA playoffs last April. The injury occurred when Houston Rockets guard Patrick Beverley banged knees with him while going for a steal after Westbrook had stopped to call a timeout. Westbrook underwent an initial surgery for the injury on April 27. He underwent another surgery on Oct. 1 to remove a loose stitch from the first procedure. At the time, the Thunder said he would miss the first four to six weeks of the regular season. Under that timetable, Westbrook could have been out for as many as 22 games. Insteead, he missed only two games – a win at Utah on Wednesday and a loss at Minnesota on Friday.ddddddddddddWestbrook said he never expected to be out four to six weeks. “I dont know who made that up in the first place,” he said. “I was never on that timeline at all. I was just taking it day by day and going one day at a time until I was ready to play.” Thunder General Manager Sam Presti called Westbrooks rehabilitation process “methodical” and said it “has been instrumental in getting Russell to this point.” Presti said the process included physical and medical benchmarks, the final one being “unrestricted basketball activity.” Presti said the team, doctors, Westbrooks representatives and Westbrook all agreed “that returning to play was the correct next step.” Thunder coach Scott Brooks said the team found out late Saturday that Westbrook would be able to play Sunday. Asked if he thought he might be a bit rusty after such a long layoff, Westbrook replied, "I expect to win. I just expect to go out there and play hard, have fun with my teammates and try to win. “Its going to be a little different, to get back in the groove of things, find a rhythm, whatever it may be. He also posted an impressive 7.4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. “I really liked what he did with us last year,” said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. “Hes very consistent. Hes a strike-thrower and has Double-A and Triple-A experience. He has great poise when hes out on the mound. We have high expectations of Matt. We think he can legitimately be a 10-game winner and throw 125 innings for us. Hes a very important piece to our starting rotation.” A product of Bossier, La., Jackson was drafted by San Diego in the 31st round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft and played five seasons in their organization. He reached Class AAA Tucson in 2012 and didnt allow a run in two starts. In 12 appearances, including 10 starts, at the Class AA and Class AAA levels in 2012 and 2013, Jackson was 4-2 with a 3.64 ERA. Wroten announced Tuesday he would declare for the NBA draft and hire an agent, ending his collegiate career after one season during which he was the Pac-12 freshman of the year but could not help the Huskies reach the NCAA tournament. “I just felt like it was the right time and I was ready and it was the best decision for me and my family,” Wroten said during a conference call. “I accomplished a lot and Im ready for the next step.” Wroten said he received word from the NBA draft advisory committee that hed be selected anywhere between the top 5 and about the No. 25 pick depending on how his individual workouts go. Hearing that news all but cinched Wrotens decision that even though his game still needs work, he was ready to make the NBA leap. He purposely held off on making the announcement until Tuesday, his mothers birthday. Wroten acknowledged he would have regrets if he did slip out of the first round. Various mock drafts have Wroten currently going in the latter half of the first round. Wroten made his announcement less than 48 hours after teammate Terrence Ross announced his intention to leave Washington following his sophomore season. The Huskies will now go from having one of the most talented guard pairs in the country to needing to replace the top two scorers from a team that won the Pac-12 regular-season title. Washington was also the first team from one of the six major power conferences to win a regular-season crown and not make the NCAAs. The Huskies reached the semifinals of the NIT before losing to Minnesota. “Just make the NCAA tournamennt, I wish we could have done that,” Wroten said.dddddddddddd “But at the end of the day I think everything happens for a reason and I would have loved to be in the NCAA tournament … but I just have to move forward.” Wroten was Washingtons leading scorer for most of the season, but was the subject of constant debate by fans who were thrilled by Wrotens electric ability to create his own shot but were often left shaking their heads when he struggled to make a simple play. He set Washington freshman records for scoring, assists and steals, but also had more turnovers (132) than assists (130). Wroten averaged 16 points per game for the season, just slightly behind Ross 16.4, but will need to develop an outside shot at the NBA level. Wroten shot 44 per cent for the season, although most of that shooting came from inside 12 feet. Wroten was just 9 of 56 (16 per cent) on 3-pointers and didnt make one after Jan. 28 — a span of 14 games. Asked why he thought he was NBA ready, Wroten was succinct with his answer. “My athleticism and my court vision and my potential,” he said. Hes just the second Washington freshman to declare for the draft, joining centre Spencer Hawes, who left after his only season in 2007. Wroten said he consulted with a number of local NBA players, including Jamal Crawford, Nate Robinson and Isaiah Thomas, who left Washington last year after his junior season and has twice been named Western Conference rookie of the month playing for the Sacramento Kings. Thomas was the final pick in the 2011 NBA draft. “They felt like I was ready. … They felt like I was ready now,” Wroten said. “Im just happy they have my back and they were great for somebody to look up to.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / 9 percent clip. Russell Westbro ORLANDO, Fla. — The Memphis Grizzlies have a magic number when it comes to making the playoffs — and they hit it on Wednesday night. Zach Randolph had 20 points, Courtney Lee added 17 and the Memphis Grizzlies held off the Orlando Magic 86-81 for their 29th win of the season. The Grizzlies have made the playoffs every season when they win 29 or more games before the All-Star break. Theyve also never made the post-season when winning fewer than 29 games before the seasons midpoint. The Grizzlies led by as many as 13 points in the second half before having to fight off several Magic runs down the stretch. They survived, but did lose centre Marc Gasol in the third quarter when he limped off the court after aggravating a left knee injury. “We just stuck with it was the most important thing,” Grizzlies forward Tayshaun Prince said. “When Marc went out, everybody was kind of hurt by it. … But this is definitely a good win going into the break.” Gasol didnt appear to be in a lot of pain, but he will have an MRI on the knee as a precaution. Grizzlies coach David Joerger said afterward that he is optimistic. “Im really proud of our first half of the season, and then to come out and lose Marc for a little bit — hopefully not a lot,” he said. Memphis beat the Magic for the sixth straight time and enters the break having won eight of its last 11. Nik Vucevic had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Magic. Tobias Harris added 13 points. But they committed 14 turnovers that led to 19 Memphis points. Orlando had won three straight and five in a row at home. “It was our game, I thought, right there. We let one slip away,” Harris said. Following the Grizzlies win over Washington on Tuesday, Joerger acknowledged his team was mentally tired. It showed as the game wore on Wednesday against Orlando. First they lost Gasol, then after leading by as many as 13 points in the first half, the Magic stormed back and briefly took the lead in the third quarter. Orlando trailed by three entering the final period. Magic coach Jacque Vaughn began the fourth with the young, quick lineup of Harris, Victor Oladipo, ETwaun Moore, Maurice Harkless and Kyle OQuinn that had been so effective in back-to-back wins, over Oklahoma City and Indiana Orlando surged at the outset, but Memphis weathered the rally and got two free-throws from Randolph that put the Grizzlies up 78-77 with 4 minutes to play. Memphis was leading 80-79 when Jameer Nelsons 3-pointer bounced off the back of the rim and was rebounded by the Grizzlies. Lee got it and raced into the front court before a clear-path foul was called on Arron Afflalo with 35.7 seconds left. The call was upheld after an official review. Lee connected on both free throws to make it 82-79. Memphis retained possession and wound down the clock before getting Randolph free in the paint for a layup to stretch the lead to five. The Magic called timeout, but they could only muster a long 3-pointer on the other end by Oladipo that caromed off the backboard and was rebounded by Memphis. The final review was one of three in the final 1:26 of the game. “The refs did the right thing in going back and looking at a couple of them so if it happens, Id rather have them go back and look at it than just make the call and stick with it,” Lee said. “One of them, they gave us the ball and another one was a clear-path foul. So it was 2 for 3. Ill take it.” Vaughn said hes looking forward to seeing how his team responds with six of their first seven on the road after the break. “I think we get an immediate test,” Vaughn said. “Back to the grind we go and a great challenge for our group to see if we can take some of the things we learned at home … and see if we can kind of duplicate it on the road.” Joerger said the break is coming at the perfect time. “Were exhausted. Were making mistakes toward the ends of games that are just mental mistakes … those are exhaustion mistakes,” he said. “It was a slugfest, I thought at halftime maybe wed get to 84. We got 86 so Im fired up.” NOTES: The Grizzlies improved to 6-4 this season in the second night of a back-to-back. … Memphis G Mike Conley missed his seventh straight game with a sprained right ankle. You can see the game on TSN beginning at 7pm et/4pm pt. The Raptors are in the midst of a four-game trek and got off to a great start with a 109-108 overtime victory on Friday in Dallas over the Mavericks. DeMar DeRozans jumper with 1:11 left in overtime proved to be the difference as the Raptors held the Mavs scoreless to close out the extra session. It was DeRozan who sent the game to overtime with two of his 15 points with just 16 seconds left. “We were sleepwalking early. I thought we were feeling sorry for ourselves a little bit. I had to get their attention and they did. Guys responded,” said Raptors coach Dwane Casey. “They came out swinging, hit us with a haymaker, and Im proud of the way our guys fought back. Thats what the NBA is all about.” Kyle Lowry scored a team-high 20 points, Jonas Valanciunas added 18 with 13 rebounds while Terrence Ross and Amir Johnson finished with 15 points apiece for the Raptors, who have won three of their last four. Greivis Vasquez managed 14 for the second unit. The Raps will also visit San Antonio and New York on this sojourn. The Thunder have won three straight against Toronto. The Raptors have dropped two straight and six of the last seven as the visitor in this series. Oklahoma City will try to run its winning streak to 10 games tonight against the visiting Raptors.dddddddddddd The Thunder havent lost since a Dec. 4 setback in Portland to the Trail Blazers. Oklahoma City is the lone remaining undefeated team at home with a perfect 13-0 mark. OKC ran its winning streak to nine with a 113-100 road victory Saturday night over the San Antonio Spurs. The Thunder took control of the game with a 40-29 second quarter and held the ultra-efficient Spurs under 43 percent shooting, while connecting at a 49 percent clip. Russell Westbrook was dynamic on Saturday with 31 points on 13-for-22 shooting. He handed out eight assists, grabbed four rebounds and only committed three turnovers. “Hes an All-Star and playing like one every night,” Thunder coach Scott Brooks said of Westbrook. “He makes us go with his effort, with his toughness, with his team mentality and the last couple of years, the game has slowed down. He sees so many things on the floor. He does a great job of running our sets and does a great job of leading our defense.” Reggie Jackson had 21 off the bench and Kevin Durant, the NBAs leading scorer, finished with 17. Serge Ibaka enjoyed a great all-around game with 14 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. The Thunder head out for a two-game road trip, starting in Madison Square Garden on Christmas afternoon against the New York Knicks. Téma: Jak postupovat / shot high into the net fo MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The New Orleans Pelicans were hoping for a quick start coming off a tough loss. They did just that, shooting extremely well early and building a big lead in a 99-84 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night. Eric Gordon scored 19 points to lead the Pelicans, and Anthony Davis had 18 points and nine rebounds. It was New Orleans first road win of the season and followed 104-98 loss to Phoenix on Tuesday. “We came out with a lot of defensive intensity, moving the ball, sharing the ball pretty well, and we got open shots,” said Davis, who also had three blocks and three steals. “When we play like that, it is tough for us to get beat.” Strong defence allowed the Pelicans to get out in transition and hit 13 of their first 16 shots. “We played really good defence,” Gordon said. “It gave us opportunities to get fast-break points. We did that all night, and we really hunkered down defensively.” Tyreke Evans had 16 points, Jrue Holiday scored 11 and Jason Smith finished with 10 points for New Orleans, which led by as many as 29 points in the fourth quarter. Mike Conley led the Grizzlies with 26 points before leaving in the fourth quarter with a cut that required three stitches. Marc Gasol had 11 points for Memphis, but connected on only 4 of 11 shots and grabbed one rebound. Memphis played most of the game without starting forward Zach Randolph, who left in the first half when his fiance, Faune, went into labour. The Grizzlies announced after halftime that Randolph made it to the hospital in time for the birth of their 7-pound, 4-ounce boy. While Randolph left to celebrate the birth of his child, two Memphis guard left the game with injuries. Jerryd Bayless sprained his right knee in the third quarter, then Conley left after he caught an inadvertent elbow from New Orleans guard Anthony Morrow. Bayless is day to day and Conley was expected to be at practice Thursday. New Orleans shot at least 50 per cent through most of the game before finishing at 49 per cent. The Pelicans outrebounded Memphis 39-29 and forced 18 turnovers. The Grizzlies committed eight turnovers in the first quarter, and the Pelicans made 14 of their first 20 shots in opening a 51-41 lead at halftime. It was a quick reversal from the home loss to the Suns. “When you lose the way that we lost (Tuesday) night, it leaves a sick feeling in your stomach,” Pelicans coach Monty Williams said. “I did expect us to play with a bit of passion and with a chip on our shoulders. I didnt know that we would come out and have the defensive quarters like we had.” Things just kept getting worse for Memphis in the second half. New Orleans opened the third with an 8-1 run. Davis had 10 points in the quarter, and New Orleans extended the lead to as many as 23 points before carrying a 79-57 lead into the fourth. The Grizzlies were so frustrated that Gasol slammed the scorers table with both hands in anger as he headed to the huddle at the end of the third quarter. “Weve got to play better, play more as a unit and help each other,” Gasol said. Brian Roberts scored on a 3-pointer and a jumper to start the fourth, and when Morrow scored on a layup after Memphis second straight turnover to make it 86-57, the Grizzlies fans started booing. The Memphis reserves made it a bit exciting in the fourth, crafting a 16-0 run, eventually cutting the Pelicans lead to 93-84 with 2:32 left. “We are a little frustrated,” Conley said. “If we lost giving the effort that we normally give and laid it all out there, we would have been fine with that. I saw that we came back at the end, but we were never really in the game.” NOTES: Memphis is now 0-3 vs. Southwest Division. The Grizzlies were 10-6 in the division last season. … Memphis has trailed after three quarters in all five games this season. … New Orleans, which entered the game with the best shooting percentage in the league beyond the arc at 52 per cent, connected on only 4 of 13 (31 per cent). Portuguese sides Benfica and Porto also advanced to the last eight while Basel overcame an early red card to win 2-1 at Salzburg and progress from a last-16 second leg that was briefly suspended because of crowd trouble. Lyon, Valencia and AZ Alkmaar will also be in Fridays draw in Nyon, Switzerland, where the team to avoid will be Juventus — even though the Italian champions made heavy work of their all-Italian last-16 match against Fiorentina. Having drawn 1-1 at home in the first leg, Juve was staring at elimination on the away-goals rule until Fiorentina defender Gonzalo Rodriguez was dismissed in the 69th minute for a second booking. From the resulting free kick at the edge of the area, Pirlo stepped up and whipped a brilliant strike into the top corner to seal a 1-0 win. The classy Italy midfielder shows no sign of decline at the age of 34 — he scored a similarly sublime free kick for his team in a last-gasp league win over Genoa on Sunday, which kept Juve 14 points clear in Serie A and on course to defend its title. Juventus will be hosting the Europa League final on May 14 and the runaway Italian league leader may yet be playing in the showpiece match in front of its own fans. Sevilla overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit courtesy of goals by Jose Antonio Reyes and Carlos Bacca, earning a 2-0 win that sent the match to penalties. Sevillas first spot kick by Vitolo was saved but Alfred NDiaye and Nono failed to find the target with Betis last two attempts, putting the two-time winners through 4-3 on penalties. Benfica remained on course for a return to the final after surviving a late fightback by Tottenham to draw 2-2 in their second leg and advance 5-3 on aggregate. Two goals in less than two mminutes by Nacer Chadli put Spurs 2-1 ahead on the night and gave them 11 minutes to score another, which would have forced extra time.dddddddddddd The English team missed a number of chances before conceding a penalty deep into injury time, converted by Lima. There was no repeat of the touchline spat between rival coaches Jorge Jesus and Tim Sherwood form the first leg — Sherwood opted to sit in the stands and stay out of trouble. Portos 1-0 lead from its first leg against Napoli was wiped out by Goran Pandevs deft finish in the 21st minute. The Italian side dominated but was picked off on counterattacks through goals by Nabil Ghilas in the 69th and Ricardo Quaresma in the 76th. Quaresma, the mercurial playmaker, finished off a flowing move by jinking between two defenders and slamming a shot high into the net for the goal of the evening. Duvan Zapatas consolation goal earned Napoli a 2-2 draw but it exited 3-2 on aggregate, denying coach Rafael Benitez the opportunity to retain the title he won when in interim charge of Chelsea last season. Players were taken off the pitch by the referee for about 10 minutes midway through the first half of Salzburg-Basel after missiles, including fireworks, were thrown onto the field of play by Basel fans. The score was 1-0 to Salzburg at the time after Jonatan Sorianos competition-high eighth goal in the Europa League, while Basel was down to 10 men after Marek Suchys straight red in the ninth minute. However, Marco Streller and Gaston Sauro scored headed goals in the second half for the Swiss team and Salzburg also ended the match with 10 men after Alan received a second yellow card for trying a bicycle kick and hitting Basel defender Philipp Degen in the face. Lyon lost 2-1 at Viktoria Plzen but advanced 5-3 on aggregate, Valencia beat Ludogorets Razgrad 1-0 thanks to Paco Alcacers 59th-minute goal and advanced 4-0 on aggregate. AZ Alkmaar drew 0-0 at Anzhi Makhachkala for a 1-0 aggregate victory. Téma: Jak postupovat / ockey team was also picked by FLORENCE, Italy — Fiorentina striker Giuseppe Rossi could be back playing in as little as six weeks, much sooner than first thought after he damaged his right knee again. Rossi was thought to have ruptured the cruciate ligament in his right knee for a third time but tests Monday revealed that the American-born forward has a medial collateral ligament injury. “It seems to be a sprain with damage to the collateral. We got lucky. He could return to the pitch in 6/7 weeks,” one of his agents, Federico Pastorello, wrote in Italian on Twitter. Fiorentina said Rossi will soon be seen by Colorado-based Dr. Richard Steadman — the same surgeon who carried out the second operation — “in order to correctly evaluate the extent of the injury and the prognosis.” Rossi limped off in tears in Sundays 1-0 win over Livorno following a strong tackle from Leandro Rinaudo. The club initially feared Rossi would be out for another six months, although that was later reduced to three with the news that it wasnt another cruciate ligament injury. “We are more optimistic,” Rossis other agent, Andrea Pastorello, said as the pair left the hospital to applause from fans. Rossi tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in 2011, and did so again in training six months later before he had returned to first-team football. The 26-year-old Rossi is the top scorer in Serie A this season with 14 goals in 17 matches and had returned to the Italy team. Seventy-three per cent of those surveyed in the Harris-Decima poll, which was provided to The Canadian Press, said Canada winning gold in mens hockey is “important in determining the success of the Games.” But even more say they view avoiding security threats as the most important measure of whether the Sochi Olympics are a success. In total, 83 per cent said it was very or somewhat important that there be no security threats. That is a slightly smaller number than the 88 per cent who said in a survey prior to the 2010 Olympics that it was very or somewhat important that there be no security threats in Vancouver. Nationally, 58 per cent of those polled suggested they would follow the Sochi Olympics very or somewhat closely, also down from those polled prior to the Vancouver Games. And just over half those polled suggested theyd be paying less attention to these Games than they did to the Vancouver Olympics. “We saw an amazing degree of national enthusiasm for the Games we hosted in Vancouver and we shouldnt expect Canadians to get quite that engaged for any other Winter Olympics,” said Harrris-Decima vice-president Megan Tam.dddddddddddd “That being said, a majority of Canadians anticipate following the Games in Sochi and there is clearly some sense of national competitiveness demonstrated with the attitudes expressed about the importance of winning certain gold medals or even the most overall again.” B.C. residents were the most likely to say they would be paying a lot less attention to Sochi. Mens hockey gold wasnt the only big item on the list of those who will be following the Olympics. A gold by the Canadian womens hockey team was also picked by 71 per cent as important in gauging success. And 70 per cent said they felt it was important there be no organizational problems that could give the Olympics a black eye on the world stage. Canadas overall standing was also important with 63 per cent saying its important Canada finish in the top three in the medal count, and 58 per cent suggesting Canada winning more medals than any other would be important in their determination of the success of the Olympics. . But in the aftermath a 115-91 pounding of the Utah Jazz on Saturday night, Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey insisted it was still invaluable for evaluating the depth of his team early in the season.ST. LOUIS — Ryan Miller was supposed to be the piece the St. Louis Blues needed to make a deep playoff run and perhaps at long last win a first Stanley Cup. The highly-decorated goalie was among those falling fall short for a franchise smarting from another early exit, and he might not be back. The team scheduled availabilities for general manager Doug Armstrong, coach Ken Hitchcock and players for Tuesday. Hitchcock deflected questions about the 34-year-old Miller, wholl be an unrestricted free agent, after the Blues were eliminated Sunday in Chicago. The Blues could opt to go with prospect Jake Allen, called the franchise goalie of the future by Armstrong when the Miller deal was made. “I dont get into long-term stuff. Thats Dougs department,” Hitchcock said. “He played good for us. Im sure theres some goals that hed like to have back, just like any goalie would. We win as a team and lose as a team.” Asked how he played, Miller said: “Im going to sit down and think about that. Not good enough, I guess.” The Blues were among the NHLs best before a six-game losing streak to end the regular season landed them with a tougher first-round draw. For the second straight year they were knocked out in four straight by the defending Stanley Cup champion after taking a 2-0 series lead. Last season, it was the Kings. This time, it was Chicago. It was small consolation that before the Blackhawks four-goal third period in Game 6, the difference was razor-thin. The first five games were decided by one goal, discounting an empty-netter by the Blackhawks in the final minute of Game 3. “Youve got to bring your game every night, every shift, every period,” captain David Backes said Sunday. “I sound like a broken record here. Finding ways to win those close games, they did and we didnt.” Miller was acquired from Buffalo on Feb. 28 along with forward Steve Ott in a deal that cost the Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak, forward Chris Stewart and a fiirst-round pick in 2015.dddddddddddd He made $6.25 million last season. “Ive just got to take things as they come right now,” he said, adding, “I guess Im free to go to my sister-in-laws wedding.” Miller would like to stay, but acknowledged he wasnt sure how the Blues “feel about me.” He had a 2.70 goals-against average and .897 save percentage in the series. Hitchcock wasnt pinning the teams failure on the goalie. He noted the Blackhawks split the defence on the go-ahead goal and the Blues surrendered a breakaway on the third goal, which he called “a back-breaker.” Just as important, they couldnt capitalize on scoring chances. St. Louis was 2 for 29 on the power play in the series. “Ill take more than my share of the blame,” Backes said. “Im counted on to produce and I didnt produce. Ill think about that a lot this summer and drive the engine going into next year.” Injuries factored into the early exit. Backes missed two games with stiffness in his neck after an illegal hit by Brent Seabrook, who was suspended for three games. T.J Oshie also wasnt quite himself coming off a blow to the head late in the regular season and Patrik Berglund was no factor coming off a shoulder injury, scoreless and minus-7 in four games. Vladimir Tarasenko was a breakout star early in the series and had four goals, one of them forcing overtime with 6.4 seconds to go in Game 3. But he was scoreless the last two games. The Blues defence got burned on an ill-timed change in the pivotal Game 5, leading to Jonathan Toews overtime winner. Barret Jackman was minus-5, Jaden Schwartz minus-4. Backes, Oshie, Ott and Roman Polak were all minus-3. “We all need to look in the mirror and assess how we did and we didnt do, and take that gut check,” Backes said. “No offence to you guys,” he added to reporters, “but these interviews are getting a little sickening to have in April and not in June.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / yea said. From there, Goldeyes re ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Before John Elway headed out to the golf course to take advantage of a sunny Sunday in the Rocky Mountains, the Denver Broncos general manager made yet another splash in free agency by signing wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders to a three-year, $15 million contract. The Broncos have been the leagues most successful suitors so far, committing nearly $128 million to five players, including three thumpers who will reinforce a defence that was exposed in the Super Bowl: safety T.J. Ward, cornerback Aqib Talib, pass rusher DeMarcus Ware, and two receivers in Bubba Caldwell and Sanders. “They definitely did a great job from a free-agent perspective,” Sanders said. “When I saw them bring in DeMarcus Ware, Aqib Talib and T.J. Ward, I was like, Theyre stacking up on defence. I knew with Peyton Manning and Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas and Wes Welker and (Bubba) Caldwell, I was like, I would fit with these guys really well. When my agent, Steve Weinberg, got the call, we were definitely fist-bumping. We were hoping that the numbers matched, and they matched. So yesterday was probably one of the best days of my life.” A former Pittsburgh Steelers No. 2 receiver, Sanders can play both the slot and the outside in place of Eric Decker, who left Denver for the New York Jets. This latest move left several teams fuming, according to NFL.com, which reported that Sanders agent, Steve Weinberg, shopped is client around after agreeing to a deal with principle with the Kansas City Chiefs. A call from The Associated Press to Weinberg went straight to voice mail Sunday, and that mailbox was full. Sanders defended his agent, saying Weinberg did nothing wrong. He said he visited four teams and when he was ready to sign they reached out to all four of those teams to ask for their final offer. “And I guess the Chiefs felt like they had a deal. But we never officially had a deal,” Sanders said. He said the fact that he was at the Chiefs facility at the time may have made them believe they had a deal in place. “There was no handshake. There was no kind of agreement … we were close to a deal, but it wasnt anything official just yet,” Sanders said. “In terms of shopping around, we didnt shop around. Teams were still calling. Teams were still trying to get involved. Thats what happened. Steve Weinberg, he did an exceptional job in terms of the whole free-agency process. At times, I was like, Steve, what is going on? Am I flying East Coast or West Coast? But I believe in him. Everything that he said was going to happen, happened. I ended up at the place that I needed to be.” Elway said this sort of thing happens this time of year. “I will say this, we didnt know anything about it, but having been in this for the last three years, that stuff happens quite a bit, so miscommunications happens a lot of times,” Elway said. Sanders, a third-round draft pick in 2010, had 161 catches for 2,030 yards and 11 touchdowns in four seasons with the Steelers. He also has 13 receptions for 172 yards in four career playoff games. Last year, he caught a career-best 67 passes for 740 yards and six TDs, including four over the Steelers final six games. Although not as big as Decker, Sanders is fast and elusive — he ranked fourth in the league last year by causing opponents to miss 15 tackles. Elway said, “I think hes going to add a lot,” to Denvers high-octane offence that shattered several records last year and was the envy of many a wide receiver who marveled at the numbers Manning put up week after week. “It was amazing and I remember sitting at my house saying, Man, thats what I want to be a part of someday,” Sanders said. “It always works out as long as you work hard. They had a really good season last year and hopefully we can repeat the same things and this time finish it off.” . – Alex Gordon went from a bust to busting the bank. On the back of an early 3-0 lead and a shutdown pitching effort, the Goldeyes (1-1) beat the Amarillo Sox (1-1) 5-2 Friday night before 2,120 fans at a gusty Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium in Texas. With two out in the top of the first inning, Goldeyes left fielder Ray Sadler hit a solo home run to left field. It was Winnipegs first home run of the season and put the road team up 1-0. Winnipeg added to its lead in the third inning. Designated hitter Ryan Pineda led off the inning with a triple and was quickly singled home a batter later by catcher Luis Alen. After shortstop Tyler Kuhn hit into a double play, second baseman Jake Blackwood hit a solo home run to extend Winnipegs lead to 3-0. Goldeyes starting pitcher Jason Jarvis was stellar in his first start of the season, throwing just 58 pitches in six innings of work. “You have to go out there and get strike one,” Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said on the Jewel 101 post-game show. “Jarvis did a heck of a job doing that tonight.” Jarvis only blemish came in the bottom of the sixth inning when he surrendered three consecutive one-out singles and a sac fly, which led to two Amarillo runs. Down to a one-run lead, the Goldeyes restored the three-run lead in the top of the eighth inning. Kuhn singled and BBlackwood walked to start the inning.dddddddddddd. Then a deep fly ball from Sadler moved them to second and third base. After centre fielder Reggie Abercrombie was intentionally walked, Kuhn scored on a wild pitch and third baseman Josh Mazzola scored Blackwood on a sac fly. “There was a three-inning stretch there where we didnt put together too many good ABs, but we beared down in the eighth inning and mustered those two runs, which were big for us,” Vermilyea said. From there, Goldeyes relievers Chris Kissock, Brendan Lafferty and Kyle Bellamy – in windy conditions in the bottom of the ninth inning – wiped out any hopes Amarillo had of staging a comeback. Jarvis posted his fourth quality start in five starts as a member of the Goldeyes dating back to last season and earned the win, while Bellamy picked up his first save in a Goldeyes uniform. Amarillo starter Derek Blacksher also turned in a quality start, but he suffered his first loss of the season.Kuhn, Blackwood and Sadler led Winnipeg with a pair of hits each, as the Goldeyes outhit Amarillo 9-7. Defensively, Winnipeg didnt commit an error after making four on the rugged playing surface at ANB Sox Stadium last night. Téma: Jak postupovat / d the scenes every game to br HOUSTON — Butler coach Brad Stevens loves an underdog, whether its his team back in the Final Four or Connecticut making an unprecedented five-games-in-five-nights run through the Big East tournament. Wait, what? A Big East team as an underdog? The coach at tiny Butler cheering for big, bad UConn? Welcome to the bizarro world of college basketball in 2011 — a sport where not only is anything possible, but where nothing quite makes sense. A sport in which the story of a small school from a small conference making a run to a title is no more rare than that of the late-season magic conjured by a power program with one of the nations best players. Butler and Connecticut will meet Monday in the national title game — the eighth-seeded Bulldogs trying to finish the deal after coming oh-so-close last season and the third-seeded Huskies (31-9), led by Kemba Walker, talking about shocking the world with their 11th straight victory after a regular season that foreshadowed none of this. You can see the championship game on TSN2 tonight at 9pm et/6pm pt. “We were all rooting for UConn because it was a great story,” Stevens said, “a lot of fun to follow.” As is Butler, the team from a 4,500-student campus in Indianapolis that practices at Hinkle Fieldhouse, used as the backdrop for the classic movie “Hoosiers” — the based-on-reality melodrama in which tiny Hickory High stares down the biggest schools in Indiana and wins the state championship. On its second try. What seemed impossible in that movie is becoming more the norm, at least in the college game. Last season, Butler (28-9) came one desperation heave from toppling Duke to become the first true mid-major to win the championship. This season, Butler wasnt even the biggest longshot at the Final Four. That was VCU, an 11th seed that fell to the Bulldogs in Saturdays semifinal. As recently as 2008, the NCAA tournament landed all four No. 1 seeds in the Final Four. This year, there wasnt a single 1 or 2 seed for the first time in the 33-year history of seeding. UConn coach Jim Calhoun said this has been the natural progression since the NCAA started limiting scholarships and new NBA rules triggered a flood of players who would come to college for one year, then declare for the draft. “Its as close to parity as there can be,” Calhoun said. “It certainly can occur in a tournament a lot more than it could playing a Saturday night, then Big Monday. Its just the nature of things. … The one-and-done thing, walking the tightrope is a hard thing, a very difficult thing.” If anyone can say theyve mastered it this season, its UConn. Led by Walker, the junior guard on the verge of becoming the best player to ever put on a Huskies uniform, Connecticut won five games in five nights against Big East competition to win the post-season tournament. A remarkable accomplishment in any conference, but especially the Big East — the 16-team behemoth that placed a record 11 teams in the tournament this year. Maybe because of the grueling nature of its regular season, the Big East wore down and had a terrible showing, only moving two teams into the second weekend. But Connecticut is still standing, a testament to Walkers playmaking ability (hes averaging 25.5 points during this 10-game winning streak) and Calhouns ability to adjust on the fly to the fatigue that has predictably set in. “Our code has been very simple: The hell with it, lets just go play basketball,” Calhoun said. “Well, we wouldnt be doing all the things we did last night defensively to Kentucky if we just kind of rolled the thing out there. We worked very hard on it. But we worked on it in a different way.” Connecticut advanced to the final by holding the Wildcats to 33.9 per cent shooting in a 56-55 victory Saturday night. Butler, meanwhile, only needed two wins in four nights to capture the tournament title in the less-heralded Horizon League. Still, the Bulldogs are on a 14-game winning streak that began after losing their third straight back on Feb. 3. At that point, this was a team that had no guarantees it would even make the NCAA field. It looked nothing like the one that captured hearts as it made its run through last years tournament. In the final last April, Butler trailed Duke 61-59 with 3.6 seconds left when Gordon Hayward (now playing for Utah in the NBA) grabbed the rebound off an intentionally missed free throw, dribbled four times to the halfcourt line and launched a shot at the buzzer. It hit the backboard, the inside of the rim and bounced out. It could have been the greatest finish ever in sports. It wound up as something less, though Stevens insists he walked away that night feeling like a winner. “Our guys played as well as they could have,” Stevens said. “They represented themselves in an unbelievable manner throughout that whole game. That might be the reason why we had parades, too, even though we lost. It was remarkable the way people treated us even though we lost.” One win away from the pinnacle once again, the Bulldogs are talking about finishing the deal this time. They havent turned their backs on the heart-tugging story lines that help define them, but they dont fall back on them, either. “There are some connections to us and Hoosiers. I understand that, and thats nice if people want to make those connections,” senior forward Matt Howard said. Calhoun, trying to become only the fifth coach to win three NCAA titles, says he appreciates Butler as much as the next guy. He sees the slow, steady improvement of mid-majors such as Butler and figures there will be more tournaments like this one and more nights like Monday — where the small school and the big school are on even footing. Maybe one of those days, the little guy will win it all. “I think its good for college basketball,” Calhoun said. “I think if it starts around 2012, 2013, it would be a wonderful thing.” C… Jerseys NFL . Open on Wednesday as he recovers from back surgery that has kept him out of golf for nearly three months. It appears as though the Holiday Break couldnt have come at a better time for the Montreal Canadiens this season. After a roller coaster 4-3 OT win in Nashville on Saturday night, the Habs look like a team that needs a few days of rest and relaxation away from the rink and the game. Montreal has the rare opportunity this particular season to have a stretch of seven days off in between games. In fact, they wont even return to the ice for practice until next Friday when they arrive in Tampa to prepare for a date with the Lightning. While the physical break is always enjoyed, sometimes its the mental break that can be the best thing for a player; a few days away from the arena and the game all together, spending time with family and friends to enjoy the season. Sometimes it can be overlooked how much a few days of family time can do for a player. A good example would be Daniel Briere, who has only been back to his home in Philly with his kids once since arriving in Montreal for training camp. A few days back around the Christmas tree with family can be a great recharge. Max Pacioretty will have his hands full with a new baby to welcome into the family over the break, and no doubt will enjoy a few days off during the whirlwind experience of becoming a father. Its also a case of some good ol home cooking, with several players heading home for the holidays. Ryan White said hes most looking forward to Moms cooking. The holidays also bring out memories of childhood and for players with young kids, a chance to pass on family traditions. Even though Travis Moen recalls his excitement of receiving his first shotgun on Christmas morning at 12 years old, hes not looking to pass on that tradition, saying “we live in the city now, so I cant see that,” but jokes that some traditional food dishes are in order and of course the matching pajamas for the whole family. Its a mixed bag for the Habs this year, some who have family coming to Montreal while others will venture home. There are even plans which include enjoying the holidays away in a different destination to escape the madness. One of those spots include Florida, where theyll remain and await the teams arrival next week. No matter which Habs player you talk to, and what the plans are, the common theme remains the same, its all about family. Hockey players are a tight group and the dressing room is much like a family, so its no surprise that remains the focus. So, while the players take a few days off, the fans should as well. Relax, take youur mind off hockey for a few days.dddddddddddd Focus on the people around you. Spend some quality time with family and friends, and enjoy the festive season. Line combinations, statistics, and standings can take an aside for a few days to focus on whats really important. Its a long season in an Olympic year, and theres lots of hockey to still be played. Of course, theres still the World Juniors to watch on Boxing Day on TSN. And now, a few holiday notes… Id like to take a moment to thank all our team at TSN Radio 690 in Montreal. Its been a well-documented wild ride for the last two years, but things look brighter than ever for the future. There are a lot of people behind the scenes that make the station tick day to day and Id mention all the names, but fear of missing some. While you all are most likely familiar with the on-air talent, there is one name you dont hear of often that Id like to mention. He is our game night producer Marco Campagna. Hes the voice at the other end of the line every game for me, and also assembles our Saturday night montage openers. Top notch guy who never misses a game and it wouldnt be the same without him. Congratulations to our colleagues at RDS, who will remain as the Canadiens Regional rightsholder “en francais” for another 12 years. In addition to my friends Pierre Houde and Marc Denis, there are a lot of good people who work behind the scenes every game to bring a quality broadcast and its nice to see theyll still be together. A great piece of news before the holidays. Atlantic Canada, stay tuned, more Habs hockey is coming to a radio near you in 2014! The TSN 690 Habs Radio Network is expanding very soon. Téma: Jak postupovat / eaults goal at 13:59 of the se Marcus Stroman tries to win his fourth consecutive decision today when the Toronto Blue Jays close out a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins at Rogers Centre. Stroman, the Jays first round pick in 2012, is also trying to become Torontos first rookie to win his first three starts since Mauro Gozzo in 1989. He was terrific on Friday versus St. Louis, as he gave up a run and seven hits in six innings to run his record to 4-0, while, lowering his ERA to 5.40. Hes won both of his starts and has surrendered just two runs in 12 outings of those contests. “Its been special,” said Stroman. “Its just awesome to put my team in a position to win the two times I have been out there.” Minnesota will have an equally impressive right-hander on the hill in Phil Hughes, who lost for the first time in nine starts his last time out. Hughes was defeated by Houston on Friday, as he yielded five runs and six hits in six innings, dropping him to 6-2 on the year to go along with a 3.46 ERA. “I just wasnt making adjustments the way I have before,” Hughes . “I didnt recognize it early enough to make some better pitches with the two-seamer or the cutter. I tried to generate some extra velocity and came out of my mechanics a little bit and just left some balls over the plate.” Hughes may continue to struggle on Wednesday, as he is a mere 1-4 with a 7.39 ERA in his last seven starts north of the border. Torontos high-powered offense was blanked for the third time in four games on Tuesday, as Kevin Correia spun six-plus strong innings in Minnesotas 4-0 win. Correia (3-7) gave up six hits and a walk with one strikeout, while Brian Duensing, Jared Burton and Glen Perkins each tossed a scoreless frame to polish off the shutout for the Twins, who won for only the second time in six tries. “I think once he got going he got his confidence,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said of Correia. “Great performance by him.” Brian Dozier hit a two-run home run while Danny Santana had two hits, drove in one and scored once in the win. J.A. Happ (5-3) was tagged for four runs — three earned — on six hits in just 3 2/3 innings for the Blue Jays, who have lost three of their last four. “I felt like I was locating for the most part. It doesnt really matter … all that matters is the results,” Happ said. The Blue Jays, who had been shut out only once before this stretch, is hitting just .186 over its last four games. “You never see that coming,” manager John Gibbons said. “Naturally, as hot as we were, you figure youre going to cool off a little bit.” Minnesota won two of three when these teams squared off in April. Téma: Jak postupovat / t the Yankees would need to f GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried said his team had a “golden” opportunity to help its NCAA tournament chances. The Wolfpack didnt squander it, instead sending Jim Boeheim and No. 11 Syracuse to a quick exit from their first Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. T.J. Warren scored 28 points while Ralston Turner banked in the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:28 left to help N.C. State upset the Orange 66-63 in Fridays quarterfinals, continuing both the Wolfpacks push for the NCAAs and the Oranges downward late-season trend. The seventh-seeded Wolfpack (21-12) blew a 10-point second-half lead but came through with two clutch baskets late to hold off the Orange (27-5) in front of a home-state crowd in Greensboro. It was a huge win for N.C. State, which came into the year picked to finish 10th in the league with a young team and instead finished 9-9. That included one-point losses on last-second baskets to Wake Forest and rival North Carolina, as well as one to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome last month. “I hope that were a legitimate contender,” Gottfried said. “Were not the same team that we were in November and December. When you lose 80 per cent of your scoring from a year ago, its going to take a while to figure yourselves out.” Now N.C. State has won four straight heading into Saturdays semifinals against No. 7 Duke, marking the third time in three seasons that N.C. State has reached Saturday at the ACC tournament under Gottfried. This win could help Gottfried also make it 3 for 3 with the NCAAs, too. “I think so,” Turner said when asked about whether N.C. State should be in, “but thats not up to me.” Warren followed Turners tiebreaking 3 with a jumper to make it 64-61, then hit two free throws with 24.6 seconds left to keep the Wolfpack up three. Syracuse had one wild final possession, missing six shots — including four hurried 3-pointers from Tyler Ennis, Trevor Cooney and C.J. Fair — to ensure its first ACC tournament would be a one-and-done stop. “I thought the 3s we were taking, we had a couple of good chances,” Ennis said, “but they just didnt fall.” Ennis scored 15 of his 21 points after halftime for Syracuse, which was unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the country a month ago but has faded down the stretch. The tournaments No. 2 seed had lost four of six coming into Greensboro, though Boeheim has dismissed the suggestion that his team was in a slump. That talk will probably grow louder with another loss — Syracuse is 2-5 after a 25-0 start — heading into the NCAA tournament. Syracuse shot 33 per cent Friday, with leading scorer Fair scoring nine points on 3-for-16 shooting. “Im not concerned about our team,” Boeheim said. “I think weve played well all year. I think weve struggled shooting, and I think thats pretty well-documented. But in spite of that, we won 27 games, so Im pretty pleased with what these guys have done, and I believe well be a very good tournament team.” Warren, the ACCs leading scorer and player of the year, finished 9 for 21 from the field but hit 10 of 12 free throws and grabbed eight rebounds. “I just wanted to find open spots on the floor,” Warren said. “Their zone is so spread out that its easy to find little gaps and little separation. Theyre very athletic so youve really got to think quick to get your shots up.” Fifth-year senior Jordan Vandenberg added 10 points for N.C. State, which led 28-25 at halftime then shot 52 per cent after halftime. The Wolfpacks win against reigning champion Miami in Thursdays second round set up the rematch with Syracuse, who was still atop the polls when it edged N.C. State 56-55 on Feb. 15. Syracuse won that after the Wolfpack committed a late turnover that led to Fairs winning layup with 6.7 seconds left. There was also a much-discussed call in which officials waved off a basket from Warren while being fouled with 13.6 seconds left because the foul came before the shot with N.C. State up one. This one came down the stretch just like before, but the Wolfpack didnt let this one get away. “Sometimes those kind of things balance out in life,” Gottfried said. “We had the tough one earlier in the year where we didnt finish the game. Today, maybe fate was on our side on that last possession.” . . PAUL, Minn.ORLANDO, Fla. — Baseballs annual gathering of general managers began Monday when $14.1 million qualifying offers were turned down by all 13 free agents who received them from their former teams, a group that included Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Napoli and Stephen Drew of the World Series champion Boston Red Sox. Three New York Yankees also said no thanks: Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson and Hiroki Kuroda. The others turning down the offers were Atlantas Brian McCann, Cincinnatis Shin-Soo Choo, Clevelands Ubaldo Jimenez, Kansas Citys Ervin Santana, St. Louis Carlos Beltran, Seattles Kendrys Morales and Texas Nelson Cruz. “I dont think its that particularly surprising that all the offers were turned down across baseball,” Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said. New York Mets GM Sandy Alderson interpreted the turndowns as an indicator a bull market is possible. “That ought to tell you a little bit about their expectations,” he said. If a player who turned down the offer signs with a new team, his former club would receive an extra amateur draft pick at the end of the first round next June. All 22 players given qualifying offers have said no during two offseasons under the new system. “When we made the qualifying offers, we did not expect anyone to accept. We would have been happy if any of them did,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. Cashman was an early arrival at the sessions, with some GMs due to check in on Monday night. In addition to early talks with agents and trade feelers, GMs will hold rules discussions, such as whether there should be any limitations on bowling over catchers. Owners then arrive for their fall meeting on Thursday morning, with expanded instant replay on the agenda. A baseball official familiar with the deliberations, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said management probably would approve the additional video review by umpires in phases. The go-ahead to spend the funds probably will occur Thursday. Approval of the rules likely would be put off until the January owners meeting. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized. For expanded replay to start next season, agreements with the World Umpires Association and Major League Baseball Players Association would have to be reached. “Both parties are working diligently to iron out every possible scenario that could occur with a replay,” WUA President Joe West said. These meetings usually are the spark for trades and signings later in the off-season. The pace figures to increase during the winter meetings, to be held in nearby Lake Buena Vista from Dec. 9-12. “These meetings will probably be mostly about just getting informaation,” Cherington said.dddddddddddd"Id be surprised if anything actually happens in the next three days." With many clubs seeking top starting pitching, Tampa Bay is expected at some point to trade 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner David Price, who is eligible for free agency after the 2015 season. Detroits Max Scherzer, favoured to win a Cy Young on Wednesday, can be a free agent in 12 months and the Tigers may try to gauge what he would bring in return. Texas would consider offers for middle infielders Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus to clear a starting spot for Jurickson Profar. After missing the playoffs for just the second time in 19 years, the Yankees figure to be a central figure in the market. Cano, an All-Star second baseman, has been seeking a 10-year deal in excess of $300 million. Re-signing Cano is a top priority, but at some point the Yankees would have to move on. “Those type of players dictate the dance steps,” Cashman said. “So well do the dance as long as we can but, yeah, at some point you cant do that forever. But were in the very front end of this thing, so the music hasnt even started yet.” While New York wants to get its payroll under next years $189 million threshold for the luxury tax, the Yankees may not be able to unless Alex Rodriguez serves a major part of his 211-game suspension for violations of baseballs drug agreement and labour contract. The players union filed a grievance to overturn the penalty, and arbitrator Fredric Horowitz is expected to rule during the off-season. New York would be happy to save much of Rodriguezs $25 million salary if he misses a significant part of the season, but the Yankees would need to find a third baseman. “I have question marks clearly with the controversy at third. I have a question mark at short with Derek Jeter coming back from his ankle, a free agent in Cano,” Cashman said. “So ultimately, I need to look and be open-minded to improving aspects when I can.” With more cash available because of the increase in national broadcast contracts, more teams could be bidders. After cutting payroll by about 33 per cent over two years, the Mets may be ready to spend. And they could be interested in some of the players who turned down qualifying offers, because they wouldnt forfeit their first-round draft pick — the top 10 selections in the opening round are protected, and those clubs would lose their second-round slot. “The fact that we only have to give up a second-round pick may give us a little bit of an edge,” Alderson said. “Well see.” He even joked about his newfound financial flexibility. “I was upstairs stacking our money,” he said. “Dont get excited. They were all fives.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / basketball of the season over the pas TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed Brad Mills off waivers from the Oakland Athletics, bringing the left-handed pitcher back to the team that drafted him. The 29-year-old Mills started three games for Oakland this season, posting a 1-1 record with a 4.41 earned-run average. He opened the season appearing in 14 games and making 12 starts for the Milwaukee Brewers triple-A affiliate in Nashville, posting a 4-2 record with a 1.56 ERA, before being traded to Oakland and joining the Major League team. Originally drafted in the fourth round in 2007 by the Blue Jays, the six-foot, 188-pound pitcher has a career record of 4-4 in 18 games (13 starts) with a 6.98 ERA with Toronto, the Los Angeles Angels and Oakland. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays have designated right-hander Deck McGuire for assignment. The team will make a corresponding move to the 25-man roster once Mills reports to the team. Valanciunas, who left Tuesdays loss to the Hawks late in the third quarter with a lower back sprain, missed his first game of the season. Head coach Dwane Casey announced the news an hour and a half prior to tip-off. “His back is still tight,” Casey said. “[He] wasnt able to get it loose. (Director of Sports Science) Alex (McKechnie) put him through some preliminary work and it still was tight so hes going to be out.” Valanciunas sustained the injury turning to set a screen, feeling immediate pain in his lower back before McKechnie and the Raptors training staff made the call to pull him from the game. After navigating through a mini-slump to close the month of February, the Raptors sophomore centre had been playing some of his best basketball of the season over the past week. Getting off to hot starts in each of hiss last three games, Valanciunas has totalled 34 points on 14-of-20 shooting in the first quarter of those contests.dddddddddddd The Raptors were already undermanned in the frontcourt, missing Patrick Patterson for a seventh straight game Wednesday. He is expected to be out at least another week resting an elbow injury. Tyler Hansbrough started in place of Valanciunas. Both he and Chuck Hayes will see increased playing time as long as the teams starting centre in sidelined. Amir Johnson also played against the Pelicans after tweaking a lingering right ankle injury at the end of regulation in Tuesdays overtime loss. “Weve been very fortunate not to have that many injuries up until this part of the season,” said Casey. “A lot of teams had them earlier and its unfortunate were hitting them now but its part of the NBA. Now weve got to adjust to it and make hay from it.” Valanciunas is considered day-to-day. GOLD COAST, Australia — Adam Scott won the Australian PGA by four strokes on Sunday, his best shot of the final round coming immediately after a two-hour thunderstorm delay to set up a tap-in eagle on the way to a 4-under-par 67. Scott and playing partner Rickie Fowler marked their balls on the 12th fairway after a severe storm warning suspended play with Scott holding a one-shot lead. When Scott returned, his iron shot from the fairway nearly holed out for an albatross and he made the 1-foot eagle putt. Scott was 4-under in his seven holes after the weather suspension. Fowler finished in second after a 68. Making his first appearance back in Australia since his April win at the U.S. Masters, Scott finished with a 14-under total of 270 at Royal Pines. Scott joins Greg Norman, Craig Parry, Peter Lonard, Robert Allenby and Peter Senior as the only Australian golfers to add the Joe Kirkwood Cup for winning the Australian PGA to the Australian Open annd Australian Masters titles in their careers.dddddddddddd Those three tournaments are considered the Australian majors. Scotts defining shot on the 12th came on a 4-iron from 266 yards. “I came out and knew I had to do something great to win this,” Scott said. “Its been an incredible year since April, and so great to come home. Ive had a great week.” Fowler said the storm suspension hurt him. “I had some good momentum going up until we had the rain delay,” Fowler said. "I got to within one and then he came out swinging. “He made some great swings coming down that last stretch. So its a little tough to catch a guy when hes making an eagle and a couple of birdies.” Scott moves on to Royal Melbourne next week to defend his Australian Masters title. Then he will play with Jason Day on the Australian team at the World Cup, also at Royal Melbourne, then will play at the Australian Open at Royal Sydney a week later. Téma: Jak postupovat / ummer training. Robidas should be f (NLL) – The Buffalo Bandits agreed to terms with free agent goaltender Steven Fryer to a one-year deal and re-signed five other players on Wednesday. The Bandits re-signed Chad Culp, Shawn Williams and Anthony Cosmo to one-year deals as well as David Brock and Aaron Wilson to two and three-year deals, respectively. Also, the club opted to use one of its Franchise Tags on John Tavares and has qualified Ryan Benesch, Billy Dee Smith, Jay Thorimbert and Rory Smith. Fryer last played in the NLL in 2012 as a member of the Philadelphia Wings when he saw action in 10 games and registered a 8.80 goals against average. Last season, he suited up as a member of the CLAXs Brampton Inferno. An 11-year NLL veteran, Culp has recorded 392 points and 563 loose balls in 146 regular season games. The Fergus, Ontario native recorded 21 points and 54 loose balls in 11 games with the Bandits in 2013. Williams returns for his second straight (and fourth overall) season with the Bandits. Entering his 17th NLL season, the Scarborough, Ontario native has not missed a game over the past 12 seasons and over his career has tallied 1,103 points and 983 loose balls in just 239 games. In 2013, he led Buffalo in assists (46), points (65) and finished third in goals (19). Cosmo will embark on his third season as one of Buffalos goaltenders, having appeared in 187 career NLL games over which he has amassed a 67-51 record, 10.64 goals against average. Most recently in 2013, the five-time NLL All-Star recorded a record of 4-4 along with a goals against average of 13.37. Brock has appeared in a total of 41 career NLL outings over three seasons, tallying 23 points. In 2013, he recorded a career-high 13 points in his first season as a member of the Bandits. Wilson has suited up in 171 career games to this date, contributing 615 points between stints with Toronto, Rochester, Minnesota, Edmonton and Buffalo. Heading into his second season with the Bandits, he finished second on the team in goals (23), assists (23) and points (46) during the 2013 season. The Ducks acquired Robidas from the Dallas Stars on Tuesday for a conditional fourth-round pick in this years draft. The overall NHL leaders made three deals on the day before the leagues trade deadline, shaking up their roster with 20 games left in the regular season. Anaheim also sent backup goalie Viktor Fasth to Edmonton and shipped forward Dustin Penner to Washington. Although the 37-year-old Robidas wont return from a broken leg for at least two more weeks, the Ducks were eager to acquire a hard-nosed veteran with superior passing skills and a nasty edge to his game. Theyre all attributes Anaheim could use in its attempt to back up its outstanding regular season with playoff success. The Ducks lead the NHL with 91 points and three straight victories heading into Wednesdays game against Montreal, but theyve won just one playoff series since winning their franchises only Stanley Cup title in 2007. Robidas knew he probably didnt have a future with the Stars, who havent discussed a contract extension with him. When he heard Anaheim was interested, he jumped at the chance to play in the post-season for the first time since 2008, when Dallas eliminated the defending champion Ducks in the first round. “Were going for a Stanley Cup, and thats what Ive been waiting for for a long time,” said Robidas, who is joining his fourtth NHL club.dddddddddddd “I think its a great opportunity for me, and Im just very excited for the chance the Ducks are giving me.” Robidas hasnt played since breaking his leg against Chicago on Nov. 29 while crashing into the boards behind the net, but he has been participating extensively in practice. He had four goals and one assist in 24 games for the Stars this season. “Everything has been going really well,” Robidas said of his recovery. “Ive just got a few little things I need to get a little more comfortable.” Robidas should add experience and toughness to a defence that has spent the entire season without veteran Sheldon Souray, who got hurt in summer training. Robidas should be familiar to some Ducks fans from that 2008 playoff series in which Anaheims Todd Marchant accidentally broke Robidas nose with the puck — and Robidas returned to the game shortly afterward. “Thats how I play,” Robidas said. “Im not a finesse player. I know my role. I know what I need to do. I know how I need to play, and Im not going to change the way Ive been playing. Im going to be the same player, and I think thats why they came and they got me.” Robidas is seventh in Dallas club history with 704 games played. He has 211 points in two stints with Dallas, his home for all but 45 NHL games since 2002. The draft pick acquired by the Stars becomes a third-rounder if the Ducks reach the Western Conference finals and Robidas plays in half their playoff games. Téma: Jak postupovat / obin Lehner made 18 saves as Ottawa fa MALELANE, South Africa — Charl Schwartzel and Morten Orum Madsen shared the lead after two rounds at the Alfred Dunhill Championship on Friday and will square off again at the back end of a tournament. Schwartzel lost out to Madsens late surge in the European Tours season-opening South African Open last weekend, but the Alfred Dunhill defending champion shot a second straight 68 at Leopard Creek to draw level with the Dane on 8-under 136 at the halfway stage. Madsen added a 71 to his opening-round 65 to stay on course for a second title in seven days to extend his early lead on the new Race to Dubai. They lead by a shot from Englands Ross Fisher and another Dane, Soren Hansen, who both returned impressive 7-under 65s. John Daly missed the cut in his second tournament back from elbow surgery after a 75 took him to 3 over par for the tournament. Schwartzel joined Madsen at the top of the leaderboard with four birdies and no bogeys in his second round. The South African won here by 12 shots last year for his only European Tour victory since his triumph at the 2011 Masters. Having denied Schwartzel in Johannesburg on Sunday for a maiden tour title, Madsen had a tougher time on the second day in northern South Africa with two bogeys and two double bogeys. At one point, he dropped four shots in three holes but also carded an eagle and five birdies to go 1 under on the day. Fisher climbed into contention after four birdies and an eagle in his opening nine, and Hansen had eight birdies overall. Daly, who had surgery on a damaged right elbow tendon in July, started with three bogeys in his opening nine on Friday, then finished with bogey and double bogey to miss out on the second half of the Alfred Dunhill. South Africas Hennie Otto, who sits second behind Madsen in the Race to Dubai, was tied for 12th, four off the pace. Davis had 34 points, including 13 in the Pelicans fourth quarter, and New Orleans beat Atlanta 111-105 on Friday night.(SportsNetwork.com) – The shock of Daniel Alfredssons departure from Ottawa has probably started to lighten a bit now that the NHL season is a few weeks old, but Senators fans may still have to blink a few times on Wednesday night when they see the veteran forward in a Detroit Red Wings sweater. The Sens will get a look at the definition of their past as they visit Alfredsson and the Red Wings for the first time since this season. You can catch all of the action live on TSN at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt and get in-depth player stats, Twitter Trender and more on TSN.cas GameTracker. Alfredsson sent waves through the NHL, especially in Ottawa, when he departed the Sens as a free agent by signing a one-year, $5.5 million deal with Detroit on July 5. It ended a relationship with the city and franchise that began when the Senators took the Swede in the sixth round of the 1994 draft. “It was a very tough decision, especially when it happened fairly quickly. But the way I looked at it at the time and still do today, its a huge challenge for myself personally, both on and off the ice,” Alfredsson told NHL.com. “Its a big challenge for our family and I think I will look back at this down the road as something that was a stepping stone for me in my life, in a lot of different areas.” The 40-year-old played in 17 seasons with Ottawa before departing as the clubs all-time leader in goals (426), assists (682), points (1,108) and games played (1,108). He was selected to six All-Star Games in that span and served as the captain of the Senators from 1999-2013. Alfredsson, who has a goal and eight assists in 10 games with the Red Wings, will face the Senators again in Detroit on Nov. 23 just over a week before his first scheduled trip to Ottawa on Dec. 1. Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean is tasked with trying to keep his team focused on the task at hand and not on the reunion with Alfredsson. “I think Bobby Ryan went back to Anaheim and it was emotional for him,” said MacLean. “Im not going to be able to speak for Daniel. Were just going there to play the Red Wings. Thats all my focus is on is were playing the Red Wings. Thats a big enough task in my book.” The Sens and Red Wings will meet four times in total this season after realignment shifted Detroit from the Western to Eastern Conference. The Senators and Red Wings both now reside in the new-look Atlantic Division.dddddddddddd Detroit has won four straight over Ottawa, scoring 19 goals over that time, and has not lost to the Senators since Jan. 12, 2008 on the road. The Red Wings have won two straight and five of the previous six meetings at home in this series. Alfredsson and the rest of the Red Wings offense was shut down in Mondays 1-0 shootout loss to the visiting San Jose Sharks. Jimmy Howard made 27 saves through overtime to get credited with his 17th career shutout, but allowed the only goal of the tiebreaker. “That was two really good teams playing some great defense out there,” said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. “Scoring chances were very few on both sides of the ice.” The Red Wings lost their second game in a row, but are 4-1-1 in their past six games overall. Detroit will be without defenseman Jonathan Ericsson for at least the next two weeks due to a partially dislocated left shoulder. Niklas Kronwall, who intended to play on Wednesday, took a puck to the face at practice and will be a game time decision. The team recalled Xavier Oullett from Grand Rapids, who will step in if Kronwall is unable to play. The Sens, meanwhile, had a two-game win streak halted with Saturdays 3-1 home setback to the Edmonton Oilers. Chris Neil had a third-period goal and backup netminder Robin Lehner made 18 saves as Ottawa failed to record a point for the third time this season (3-3-2). “I dont think we had enough traffic at their net. We didnt get to their net probably as much as we needed to,” noted MacLean. “If we could have got a little more traffic it probably would have helped us a lot, but they did a good job of boxing us out.” As the Senators prepare to face their former star they recalled 20-year-old forward Mika Zibanejad from Binghamton on Tuesday. The sixth overall pick of the 2011 draft ranked fourth in scoring for the Sens last season, notching 20 points on seven goals and 13 assists in 42 games. The Swede had two goals and five assists in six games with the B-Sens of the American Hockey League this season. No. 1 goaltender Craig Anderson is likely to get the start tonight for the Sens and is just 2-5-0 with a 3.14 goals against average in 10 games (7 starts) versus the Red Wings. Howard is unbeaten in three starts against the Sens, going 3-0-0 with a 3.00 GAA. Téma: Jak postupovat / losed the opening 20 minutes with back SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Michigan knew Florida State would present problems after watching the Seminoles pick apart a talented VCU squad in their first game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. What the Wolverines didnt know is that theyre a lot more resilient than they might have realized. Nik Stauskas scored 26 points, including seven in overtime, as No. 14 Michigan erased a 16-point second-half deficit to beat Florida State 82-80 Friday in the island tournament. The win earned the Wolverines (4-1) a spot in Sundays championship game against Charlotte, which beat Northeastern 86-77 in the other semifinal. “I think we just didnt want to go home with another loss on our chest. We came together as a team,” Michigan guard Derrick Walton Jr. said. “We stayed together the whole time and possession after possession we got stops and it paid off at the end.” Walton Jr. added 15 points and Mitch McGary had 14 points and 12 rebounds in his third game back from a back injury. McGary logged 33 minutes and went just 6 for 15 from the field, but kept the Wolverines competitive inside against the much bigger Seminoles front line. “Tonight was a battle. I think we stuck together as a team and showed our core values tonight,” McGary said. "Going in at halftime we were down 10 and we still had a positive attitude toward the game, we just knew we needed to get stops each possession. “Theres not a 10-point basket we could use to get back in the game. We just had to grind it out each possession and thats that we did,” he said. FSU (4-1) had a chance to win the game in the final seconds, but a midcourt heave by Aaron Thomas bounced off the backboard. Ian Miller had 19 points to lead four Seminoles players in double figures, but he had just three after halftime. Okaro White added 18 points and Montay Brandon chipped in 14 in the Seminoles first loss of the season. Coach Leonard Hamilton said he thought Michigans change to a 1-3-1 zone defence disrupted not Miller, but the flow of his entire team. He also said that self-inflicted mistakes when players dribbled off their feet or stepped out of bounds late in the game were too much to overcome. “It made us tentative, we were not nearly as aggressive and then on the defensive end they did a very good job of attacking the basket and getting to the foul line,” Hamilton said. “We tried to attack the basket and we couldnt get to the foul line … they deserved this victory today.” Michigan came out aggressive in overtime, with Stauskas scoring six of the Wolverines first eight points. He made one of two foul shots with 1:17 to play to put Michigan up 80-77. The Seminoles misfired on two possessions that could have tied it, and Walton made a pair of free throws to make it 82-77 with 14.8 seconds left. FSU wasnt finished, though. Miller broke a second half scoring drought with a 3-pointer that made it 82-80 with just 5 seconds remaining. After trailing by double figures for most of the second half, the Wolverines got a steal and 3-pointer by Spike Albrecht to cut the lead to 56-51 with 9:04 to play in regulation. Brandon scored six straight points for FSU to make it 63-54, before a basket by Stauskas got the Wolverines back within seven. Walton then got loose under the basket a few possessions later and was fouled as his layup dropped through to make it 64-58 with 3:52 remaining. He hit the free throw to complete the three-point play. The Wolverines kept scrapping and got a 3-pointer from Robinson to pull back within 67-63. Robinson then got a strip on defence and was fouled on the fast break. He hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to just a basket. Two foul shots on the other end by Devon Bookert put FSU back up by four, but it went right back to 69-67 on a two free throws by Stauskas with less than a minute to play. FSU took the shot clock down, but Bookerts 3-pointer from the corner was long. Michigan coach John Beilein said his team will only get better, and expects McGary to continue to be a key cog in that development. “You could see it a couple of times he wasnt ready for the 33 minutes,” He said. “Hes so far (away), his timing and all those things are so far off. But he gives us some energy and some rebounding that few people in the country have right now.” . The win earned Villanova (19-2) a perfect 4-0 record in Big 5 play and its 22nd Big 5 championship in program history. Temple (6-14), meanwhile, missed out on a share of the city title and an opportunity to upset a Top-10 team for the sixth consecutive season. The Owls have 11 of their last 13 games overall, dating back to Dec. 7. The Wildcats took a five-point lead at the half and stretched it to as much as 24, at 64-40, with 10:17 to play. They outscored the Owls 28-9 in the first 10 minutes of the second half. While Bell led the way, nine different Wildcats scored at least four points. JayVaughn Pinkston (13), Darrun Hilliard (12), Daniel Ochefu (11) and Dylan Ennis (10) finished in double figures. Temples chances at a comeback took a blow with 11:22 remaining when its leading scorer to that point, junior guard Will Cummings, left the floor and headed into the locker room with a lacerated lip, causing him to miss the next six minutes of play. He finished with 24 points. Cummings did return to finish with 24 points, but he didnt get much help. Temple big man Anthony Lee, who nearly had a double-double with 100 points and nine rebounds in the first half, fouled out with 6:06 remaining to finish with only 12 and 10 for the game, and the Owls two best shooters, Dalton Pepper and Quenton DeCosey combined to 9 for 31 from the field.dddddddddddd Villanovas lead was as large as 12 in the first half but it slipped away when the Cats went 6:35 without a field goal and gave up a 12-0 run to Temple. Ryan Arcidiacono closed the opening 20 minutes with back-to-back threes to give the Wildcats a 36-32 lead at the break. Despite shooting 10 for 36 from the floor and 1 of 8 from three before heading into the locker room, Temple stayed in the game by outscoring Villanova 9-0 on fastbreak points and 7-0 on points off turnovers. Before the game on Saturday, Temple unveiled two statues at the Liacouras Center honouring its two Hall of Fame coaches, Harry Litwack and John Chaney. Litwack coached the Owls from 1952-1973, complied a 373-193 record, led the program to its only Final Four appearance and an NIT Championship. He was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1976. Chaney took over in 1982, compiled a 516-253 record, and took his team to 17 NCAA tournaments and five Elite Eights. He was inducted into the Hall in 2001. Téma: Jak postupovat / pens to run through Bank of Americ Any NFL team that drafts Michael Sam will be taking on much more than a rookie pass-rusher. But experts say the smart approach for a team that signs the leagues first openly gay athlete — from a marketing and public relations standpoint — is to simply let Sams on-field play speak for him and his team. “While this is a significant announcement given the sport, the general hope is that hes just accepted as one of the other men on the roster, and therefore his marketability is still simply tied to his ability to play well on the field and ultimately make the team,” said Paul Swangard, managing director of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon. Sam declared Sunday that he is gay in interviews with ESPN, The New York Times and Outsports. The Missouri All-American had already come out last August to his coaches and teammates, who respected his privacy. Now Sam is entering uncharted territory as he prepares for the NFL draft. The SECs co-defensive player of the year was projected to be a mid-round selection. At 6-foot-2, 255 pounds, Sam will likely have to transition to outside linebacker, which could impact where hes drafted. But announcing hes gay could also have an impact on his draft status. “Im not naive to think there arent potentially some owners or executives out there who will say, Eh, Im not so sure now.” said Golden State Warriors President and Chief of Operations Rick Welts, who came out publicly in 2011. “But also, I hope, there are a lot who would say, Theres an opportunity to do something that I think our fans would actually embrace. And if were supposed to win football games, if this guy helps us win football games, thats somebody we should have on our roster.” Sam, 24, joins a growing list of active athletes to publicly come out, including Robbie Rogers, a winger for Major League Soccers Los Angeles Galaxy, and Brittney Griner, who plays for the WNBAs Phoenix Mercury. Conner Mertens, a kicker for Division III Willamette University, came out as bisexual late last month, and is believed to have been the first active college football player to publicly announce his sexuality. Griner, as one of the WNBAs brightest stars, was the centerpiece of the Mercurys marketing campaign. She also made a point of supporting causes that are important to her. “There was nothing about her that was difficult in marketing. We supported what she wanted to do with bullying and the LGBT community. We made those connecting points,” said Amber Cox, president of the Mercury before leaving to go to the Big East last fall. Nike has also thrown support to LGBT athletes, signing both Griner and Jason Collins, a former NBA player who came out last year, to sponsorship deals, and launching its “Be True” campaign. Profits from the .BeTrue collection are being donated to the LGBT Sports Coalition to support the goal of ending discrimination in sport. Mark Elderkin of the Gay Ad Network, an online media platform for national advertisers, said NFL teams need only look at Sams track record. “Theyre going to make their choices based on who the best college athletes are. And theyre going to choose Michael if they deem him the best pick. So, I think they need to focus on the facts, and his performance over the years, his All-America status and everything hes done for Missouri,” Elderkin said. “Also his relationships with the fans, and with the positive energy he has around his teammates and their full support, shows that hes not going to be disruptive to the team in any way, but is going to add value.” But its still a reality that gay athletes face a backlash. Derogatory comments were easily found among the positive posts on social media and other online commentary following Sams announcement. A Pew Research survey last year of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender adults in the U.S. found that just 4 per cent saw pro sports leagues as friendly toward LGBT people, while 59 per cent saw the leagues as unfriendly and 36 per cent saw them as neutral. Still, even over the past year there have been significant overall victories in gay and lesbian rights, most notably two U.S. Supreme Court decisions in June. One ruling cleared the way for ending a ban on same-sex marriages in California; the other struck down a 1996 law passed by Congress that banned federal recognition of same-sex marriages. It remains to be seen how growing tolerance extends to the NFL playing field. “I think the point thats being made in a lot of the discussion is, Lets just move on,” Swangard said. “If the guy makes a team, then he makes the team. His sexual orientation shouldnt be the story.” . Téma: Jak postupovat / uke Schenn inadvertently hit PITTSBURGH — Bernhard Langer made a short birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff with Jeff Sluman to win the Senior Players Championship on Sunday. Langer appeared to be in trouble when his second shot on the par-5 18th ended up in the rough short of the green. He hit a brilliant pitch to 5 feet and made the putt after Slumans birdie attempt rolled just wide. The victory was the 56-year-old Langers third of the year and his third major title on the Champions Tour. The two-time Masters champion shot an even-par 70 to finish at 15-under 265 at Fox Chapel. Sluman had a bogey-free 65 to match Langer, but narrowly missed a birdie putt on the first playoff hole that would have won it. Russ Cochran, who trailed by seven shots early in the final round, had a 67 to finish third at 14 under. Defending champion Kenny Perry tied Langer for the lead heading into the back nine, but faded badly over the closing holes. Perrys 69 left him two shots out of the playoff. Langer nearly missed out on the playoff himself. He fought a balky putter much of the day only to hole a 35-foot birdie putt on the 17th that lifted him into a tie with Sluman. The normally reserved German pumped his fist in disbelief after the ball dropped into the cup. He parred 18 to match Sluman at 15 under and escaped one more time when Slumans birdie attempt on the first playoff hole burned the right edge. Sluman, the 1988 PGA champion, covered his hands in disbelief after the putt stayed out. Langer didnt let the reprieve go to waste, birdieing the 18th on his third try to earn his first major title on the 50-and-over circuit since the 2010 Senior British Open. It didnt come easy for a player who started the day with a comfortable three-shot advantage over Perry. The steady play that kept Langer atop the leaderboard for the better part of 54 holes abandoned him early in the round, opening the door for the rest of the field. Langer missed a short par putt at the par-4 fourth, and he turned the 295-yard par-4 seventh into an adventure when his pitch sailed over the green and his 5-foot comebacker for par popped off the back edge of the cup. Perry, who promised to go into “attack mode” to chase down his good friend, had little trouble tracking Langer down. He pulled even with a birdie at the seventh and did it again at the ninth, when he bounced back from a bogey at the eighth by holing out from a greenside bunker for birdie. A back-nine duel, however, never materialized. Both players started spraying shots — including an ugly double bogey for Langer at the par-4 12th — while Sluman quietly went about his business in the group ahead. Sluman slowly reeled in the front-runners, taking the lead with a birdie on the par-4 14th and adding another at the par-4 16th while Perry and Langer faltered behind him. The streaky Perry, trying to join Arnold Palmer as the only player to win consecutive Senior Players titles, cooled as the pressure mounted. He shot 3-over 38 on the back, failing to make a single birdie down the stretch as the crisp iron game that vaulted him into contention vanished.
