But for a few weeks this spring, it also played a significant role in a labour dispute that could have stopped the season from getting off the ground. TSN/RDS and the CFL signed a new contract last year that runs through 2018, reportedly worth in the neighbourhood of $40 million per season, more than double the previous five-year agreement. That extra cash is great news for money-losing franchises like the Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. “We needed a deal that would dramatically change the economics of our league and its teams and thats what this does,” league commissioner Mark Cohon said last year when it was announced. “This will allow losing teams to start making money and to make some investments in their future, whether its new stadiums or practice facilities. Its definitely transformative from an economic standpoint.” But the flip side of the coin was the serious pre-season friction with the CFL Players Association the lucrative new agreement provoked. Players wanted a bigger slice of the TV pie than the league was offering and in the end settled for a $600,000 bump in the salary cap to $5 million, more than a million short of what they initially sought, although only $200,000 less than their final offer to the league. But labour peace has now been guaranteed for the next five years and TSN president Stewart Johnson wants to look for even more ways to give fans an up-close-and-personal look at the CFL this season as the new deal kicks in. “How do we create better access for a viewers?” he said as the CFL prepares to start the 2014 season with the Toronto Argonauts visiting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday. He said he league has already been very co-operative in allowing the network to put microphones on players, put cameras in locker-rooms for speeches and Grey Cup pre-game and post-game talks and putting cameras in less traditional places on the field. “Look for us to continue to look for new ways to innnovate when it comes to that type of thing,” he said.dddddddddddd This year former Bombers coach Paul LaPolice will move to a full-time member of the “CFL on TSN” panel from the part-time role he occupied last season. Rod Smith will host the show. “He (LaPolice) has shown to be an incredible asset to bring a coachs perspective to our panel as we try to tell those stories,” said Johnston. The panel is expected to be live in Ottawa for the expansion Redblacks opener and Hamilton as their new stadium is christened. The 2014 CFL broadcast schedule will expand to 86 games in 2014, with the addition of the Ottawa expansion franchise and the playoff games, including the Grey Cup. “Were thrilled with that expansion to begin with. Having nine more games on the schedule in and of itself is a huge benefit to TSN (and) expanding to another major Canadian market that will generate interest not only in the home team but the league as a whole is a benefit to TSN.” The new agreement gives TSN and RDS exclusive media rights to all CFL exhibition, regular-season and playoff games — including the Grey Cup — as well as the leagues annual draft and combine. In addition to broadcast and digital rights, it includes exclusive radio rights to the Grey Cup for TSN and Team radio stations. “The deal is an incredibly important component of TSNs overall programming schedule,” said the network president. “It is an exclusive relationship with a top-tier property that delivers incredibly compelling all-Canadian content and culminates in the biggest show on Canadian soil, the Grey Cup.” The CFL is a marquee property for TSN, which lost the NHL national rights earlier this year after Rogers paid $5.2-billion for a 12-year deal. Sports increasingly is seen as the premium product for broadcasters in the competitive multi-channel environment. “It has to be consumed live, there are very few folks who want to PVR a sporting event and watch it later,” said Johnston. “That translates into an increased value proposition for our advertisers.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’

TORONTO – When Patrick Chan was feeling the pressure before making his Olympic debut, he reached out to a Canadian athlete who was shouldering perhaps the greatest pressure of all. Chans drive to the rink four years ago in Vancouver included a phone call to Sidney Crosby. The two share a common trainer in Andy OBrien, who was in the car with Chan that day. “I told Andy I was nervous, who wouldnt be, I was really nervous about the event. Andy was like Oh Ill call Sid,” said Chan, who opens his season next week at Skate Canada International. "We talked about expectations and at the end of the day, he told me Yeah, the Canadian hockey team has the most pressure out of all the events. The way he put it in perspective was that we train every day and we train every day to kind of build an automatic pilot, and in order to initiate that automatic pilot when youre playing, you have to put it in perspective. “For example, my mentality is that this isnt the end of the world, people will support me because they want me to win, and they want the best for me and they want a medal for Canada, and I accept that. But then I have to be selfish in a way and realize Im doing it for myself and that was the mistake I made in Vancouver. I wanted to win the medal for Canada, and I looked at it as a big picture instead of narrowing it down to me wanting to be there, and me wanting to compete and excited to compete, and eager to win a medal.” Chan, who was 19 in Vancouver, went on to finish fifth in his first Olympics, while Crosby, of course, scored the winning goal in Canadas thrilling victory over the U.S. for gold. Four years later, the pressures have changed for Chan, who talked about his preparations for Sochi in a wide-ranging conference call Tuesday that touched on everything from the gay rights controversy in Russia to his move to Detroit. Chan, who spoken about Russias controversial gay laws before saying he plans to focus on skating, said Tuesday he believes that “everyone deserves a fair chance.” “I always believed, it doesnt matter what colour, what race, what gender, or whats your opinion on gays, it doesnt matter as long as you have the talent and you work hard and you have something to show and something to prove, anyone deserves to be on the field, and especially in the Olympic Games,” Chan said. “Thats my opinion. Figure skating, were full of gays, and I train with a lot of gay skaters, and some of them are my best friends, and honestly it doesnt bother me. I just honestly believe everyone deserves to be on the ice to compete.” The Toronto skater said hell be fending off a different kind of pressure in Sochi, where hell come in as a three-time defending world champion. "Vancouver was a pressure because it was a thought of winning a gold medal at home, I put that pressure on myself, like Oh my god the dream of all dreams would be to win and Olympic gold medal in your home country and hearing your anthem in Canada. “Sochi is different. . . coming in as three-time world champion, you put expectations on yourself, theres a lot of talk. Is this the year that hes not going to put it together, and hes going to be dethroned? I think I have many more tools going into Sochi to overcome those pressures.” Chan, who will be 23 in Sochi — his birthday is New Years Eve — has learned to shift his priorities. Hes figured out how to narrow his focus, which goes back to Crosbys call in the car ride to the rink. "If you look at the Olympics as a mountain, its like Mount Everest, its impossible. You already start beating yourself up, just like my long program. My long program is my nemesis because I look at it as a huge mountain I have to climb thats going to kill me and Im going to be out of breath and exhausted at the end. “But it doesnt seem so bad if I cut it down into portions. For Mount Everest I would focus on reaching the first base camp, then reaching the second base camp, then reaching the third, then you can get to the top. You have to look at it in stages and not try to sprint to the top.” Chan said hes a much happier skater than hes been in a while, and credits his move to Detroit. Chan pulled up stakes in Colorado Springs and drove to Detroit a couple of weeks before last springs world championships. He made the move, he said, to reinvigorate his career after his motivation had seeped out of him in Colorado. Detroit has become his “comfort zone” in the months since. “Its funny, the rink in Colorado was full, like 25 people on the ice, which is insane, and that was international skaters mixed with national level skaters. There was 25 skaters yet I still felt alone on the ice,” he said. “It was beyond motivation, I was not motivated, I was just more frustrated because there was so many people.” In Detroit, there are usually about eight elite skaters on the ice, including U.S. team member Jeremy Abbott, and rising Canadian skater Elladj Balde. “Coming here, I was worried I was not going to be able to make friends and would be alone again. but that was totally not the case,” he said. "We all get along, so we all move for each other, we all respect each other, we all push each other, we all motivate each other. And then if I have a bad day, I can get off the ice and sit in the lobby and have my lunch with Elladj and totally forget about the session and just laugh about things outside of skating. “Those little things go a long, long way. We come in every day, and it gets monotonous, it gets boring, its frustrating, so its good to have your friends around and have people who support you and make you laugh and make you forget about skating once in awhile.” . While Max Pacioretty was celebrated for having scored the game-winning goal of the series, the Montreal Canadiens can actually attribute the work of their third and fourth lines as the key contributors for their first round sweep of the Tampa Bay Lightning. There is no argument that the line of Pacioretty, David Desharnais and Thomas Vanek was one of the hottest in the NHL leading into the post-season, and they did combine for three goals and seven points, but it was the depth of all four lines that helped propel Montreal. It started in Game 1, where the fourth line took control, led by playoff veteran Daniel Briere, and capped off with the overtime winner by Dale Weise. Along with Michael Bournival, the trio tallied two goals and five points in the series with a plus-4 rating. Solid numbers for a fourth line that features a centreman who now has 51 career playoff goals and 111 points in 112 games. Briere showed this series why his off-season signing to help bring playoff experience can be very beneficial to the Canadiens. The checking line of Brandon Prust, Tomas Plekanec and Brendan Gallagher added their share of offence with the energetic Gallagher leading the Habs in playoff scoring with three goals and five points. His line had five goals and nine points. Despite the balanced attack, the big story of the series was the resurgence of Rene Bourque and Lars Eller, two players who found themselves in chateau bow-wow on more than one occasion this season, and their lack of production earned them some time in the press box as healthy scratches. Yet Bourque found the style of game that Michel Therrien has wanted from him all season long, and after finding success, built his confidence as the series wore on. Last season, Eller was the Canadiens best forward heading into the playoffs with Ottawa, before he was knocked out of the series. This time around, Eller had started to pick up his play over his final few games of the regular season, prior to missing a pair of games with the flu. He and Bourque have both used the post-season as a chance to hit the reset button on their seasons, and so far so good. That line which includes captain Brian Gionta, who added a critical shorthanded goal in the series, led the Habs with six goals, 11 points and a plus-11 rating, showing they were responsible on both sides of the puck. So often, playoff success is based on a balanced attack and the chance for a different hero each night. While this series saw big saves from Carey Price, some excellent plays and big minutes from PK Subban, a solid defensive job on Steven Stamkos done by the Habs blue line, especially Josh Gorges, the series win can really be attributed to depth. Now the Canadiens will have a week or so off before facing either Boston or Detroit in the second round. Again, Michel Therrien will have a balancing act to work on; the balance between rest and preparation for your next opponent, while ensuring the Canadiens stay game sharp and not lose the momentum built from the first round. Despite the advantage of four Fijians being sent to the sin-bin in eight minutes early in the first half, Italy almost spoiled the occasion for two of their rugby greats by blowing a 30-10 lead with 20 minutes to go. Fiji scored three converted tries to pull within six with five minutes left, but time ran out, and Fiji missed out on a fifth straight win to match their record runs in 1934 and 1999. “I wanted to celebrate with a win, but not suffering so much,” Parisse said. "But after the heavy defeat against Australia, we had to win and we did so. “Certainly, there are so many things to improve on but you can work more calmly when you get a positive result.” Fiji also had replacement Sisa Koyamaibole sent to the sin bin late on to set an unwanted international record of the most yellow cards by one team in a match. As early as the third minute, Fiji flanker Dominiko Waqaniburotu was warned that he was fortunate not to be yellow-carded for a dangerous tackle which forced Luca Morisi out of the match and gifted three points to Luciano Orquera. The first try arrived in the ninth minute with a swift counterattack after Orquera lost the ball to centre Asaeli Tikoirotuma, who raced almost the entire length of the pitch before offloading to fullback Metuisela Talebula. Captain Akapusi Qera was the first to be sin-binned in the 21st for lashing out at scrumhalf Edoardo Gori after play had already beeen stopped for a penalty.dddddddddddd Qera was swiftly joined in the bin by Tikoirotuma for a dangerous tackle and No. 8 Sakiusa Matadigo for a high tackle, and Italy took the lead with a second Orquera penalty. It worsened for Fiji as inside centre Nemani Nadolo was binned for an intentional knock down. Against 11 men, Italy drove Parisse across in a rolling maul for a converted try. Qera came back but Italy managed a second try, with fullback Luke McLean forcing his way over between two tacklers, and Italy bumped its lead to 20-5. Another Orquera penalty started the second half, but Fiji reduced the deficit through a Nagusa try. The Fijians continued to sabotage themselves with more indiscipline. Orquera missed another penalty but Italy extended its lead in the 58th with a penalty try. But up 30-10, Italy was looking far from convincing. Nadolo claimed a try, but Fiji had a fifth yellow card when Koyamaibole was punished for a shoulder charge on Tommaso Iannone. Italy thought it sealed the match when Fijian-born Manoa Vosawai scored for 37-17 with 10 minutes remaining. However, winger Napolioni Nalaga crossed and Nagusa grabbed his second try of the match while Parisse was in the sin-bin. Italy hung on without its captain for its first win since March, ending a streak of four losses. -—— Italy 37 (Sergio Parisse, Luke McClean, Manoa Vosawai tries; penalty try; Luciano Orquera 3 conversions, 3 penalties, Tommaso Allan conversion), Fiji 31 (Timoci Nagusa 2, Metuisela Talebulamaijaina, Nemani Nadolo, Napolioni Nalaga tries; Seremaia Bai 3 conversions). Gyorkos agreement, announced Monday, is a six-year deal that adds $35 million over five seasons through 2019. It replaces a one-year deal agreed to last month and includes a team option for 2020. San Diego essentially buys out one year of free agency and possibly two. “These contracts make a lot of sense for both sides,” general manager Josh Byrnes said. “In this case we potentially buy out two years of free agency. Its rare to do it so early, but Jedd, I think, he answered all the criteria you look at. First of all, character. This guy is a baseball player. I think hes going to be a part of us establishing the kind of winning tradition we want to have here. Hes always hit and hes handled things that have been thrown at him.” Gyorko proved himself with a big rookie season, hitting .249 with 23 home runs and 63 RBIs. “I wanted to be a Padre,” Gyorko said. “When they came to me and kind of showed the vision of what they have looking forward, its something I want to be a part of. Be a part of a championship team. I think thats what were going to be, hopefully soon, if not, definitely by the end of my contract.” Gyorkos previous deal called for $510,900 this year in the major leagues and $294,000 in the minors. The new contract eliminates the lower minor league pay and adds salaries of $2 million in 2015, $4 million in 2016, $6 million in 2017, $9 million in 2018 and $13 million in 2019.dddddddddddd San Diegos 2020 club option is at $13 million with a $1 million buyout. The option can escalate a maximum of $2 million, and the buyout can escalate by up to $750,000, based on All-Star appearances and Top 10 MVP finishes by Gyorko between 2014 and 2019. He also gets a suite on the road. “Its good to have the possibility and potential to pencil Jedd into the lineup for a long time,” manager Bud Black said. Gyorko, 25, was a second-round pick out of West Virginia in the 2010 amateur draft. While the Padres like Gyorko at second base, he played third base in the minor leagues and could move back to that position if Chase Headley leaves via free agency at the end of the season. Gyorko said hell play wherever the team wants him. “I think he adjusted very well and people didnt realize how good hed be there, so now its a matter of maintaining that level,” Byrnes said. “You never know how our rosters going to shape up. We like him at second base. We like the competitive advantage of a second baseman who gives us this much offence. That was part of the attraction on the front end, and for now, Id say thats the way we want it to end up as we go through the contract.” “Its a big commitment, but I think Jedd is worth it,” Byrnes said. “When you place it through the age 30, 31 view, its a risk we felt was worth taking.” The deal was negotiated by agents Sam and Seth Levinson. OAKLAND, Calif. — Two of the American Leagues top teams have struggling closers who are accustomed to being among the best in baseball. Joe Nathan held on through another rocky ninth inning for his 13th save a day after blowing one, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Oakland Athletics 5-4 on Thursday for a split of the four-game series between division leaders. “If Joes on youre going to have quick outs. Hes been one of the best closers, he had an unbelievable year last year,” Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. “If hes on, hell get quick outs. It just wasnt today.” On the other side, Oaklands Jim Johnson — the 2013 AL saves leader — walked off the mound to boos from the home crowd after allowing two runs in the seventh. He is pitching in lower-pressure situations for now. “What am I supposed to do?” he said of the crowd treatment. “I dont know what to tell you. Balls are finding holes. I think everybody else thinks that way.” Miguel Cabrera hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the fifth to back Rick Porcellos eighth victory. Porcello (8-2) overcame a career-high six walks, three shy of his season total coming into Thursdays start. Nathan allowed Josh Donaldsons leadoff double, an RBI infield single by Yoenis Cespedes and Josh Reddicks run-scoring double before pinch-hitter Jed Lowrie grounded out to end the game. It was Nathans first outing since he surrendered Donaldsons game-ending three-run homer in Wednesdays 3-1 loss for his fourth blown save opportunity. “You guys can get the guys that did their part. You can write whatever you want,” Nathan said. Victor Martinez doubled home two runs in the seventh and Cabrera also had an RBI groundout for the Tigers, who head to Seattle for the weekend before returning home. Nick Punto hit a two-run homer in the fourth for Oakland, which wasted chances all game to lose for only the seventh time in 20 games. Porcello moved into second place in the American League for wins behind Torontos Mark Buehrle. He did just enough this time, coming off his second loss of the year Saturday against Texas in which he was tagged for eight runs and 12 hits in 5 1-3 innings. “Its no secret I was all over the place,” Porcello said. “I was fortunate to get out of some of the innings.” Porcello improved to 5-1 on the road. He allowed five hits and two runs with four strikeouts in 5 2-3 innings. Oakland starter Jesse Chavez (4-3) lost consecutive starts for the first time this season following a two-game winning streak. His pitch count went up in a hurry. The right-hander walked two of his first three batters but escaped a rough first inning unscathed. After Ian Kinsler lined out to start the game, Chavez walked the next two and received a mound visit from pitching coach Curt Young after going to 2-0 on cleanup hitter Victor Martinez. Martinez then singled and J.D. Martinez grounded into an inning-ending double play. The As left the bases loaded in the second and sixth innings, and also squandered scoring chances in the first, fifth and seventh. They had the tying run on second and go-ahead run on first to end the game, leaving 14 on base in all. “We had plenty of opportunities,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We had some situational at-bats where we didnt come through.” AL Central-leading Detroit, which eliminated the two-time defending AL West champion As in a five-game division series each of the past two Octobers, won for just the third time in 11 games following a six-game winning streak. More than 50 per cent of the team are aged 23 or below, this is a team to be built, which is what I have been asked to do, build, with the fantastic talent I have, a Chelsea team for the next decade.” – Jose Mourinho, summer 2013. Without a ball being kicked, Mourinho knew the size of the task at Stamford Bridge. When his team came up against Manchester United at the end of August at Old Trafford, he kept it tight, bringing a new resilience to the team to help them get a point. It was an examination of his players and one they had rarely been asked to do under Roberto Di Matteo and Rafael Benitez last season. Almost five months later, in the return match against United at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho put his players through a different exam, one they passed again, thumping Manchester United 3-1. This was not a game won on the training pitch, or at the blackboard tactically in the buildup; instead a deflection and two poor defensive errors handed the game to Chelsea. Mourinho had hoped something like that might have happened at Old Trafford. This time hed hoped they might create a bit more, but he will certainly take the manner in which they won. In the minds of many, the game officially ended Uniteds title challenge but, realistically, this was secured two months earlier. Instead, this game showed us more of Chelsea – a win where they finally relied upon a striker to deliver the critical blows, as Samuel Etoo scored a hat-trick inside 50 minutes, and a win where they easily defeated an arch-rival without being at the top of their game. And it is that which will please the manager most. Strikers are paid a lot of money to score goals and often these become vital, isolated moments that have no reflection on the way the game was played. When Etoos shot deflected off Michael Carrick and into the net on 17 minutes, it put an end to a period that United were in control of the match. Etoo scored again and again, both times being left to easily poke home in the penalty box to secure a rare kind of victory for Chelsea. Dont get used to it. Mourinho acknowledged this recently, saying: “We cannot just let the players hide behind the fact that we are not scoring enough goals and wait for that to happen. We cannot play for that. People need to change their brains a little bit more." Sunday was the first time all season a Chelsea striker had scored more than once in a game. Last season? It happened just once in 38 games when Fernando Torres got a brace at Sunderland (and one of those was a penalty.) Etoo handed Chelsea the three points on Sunday, but with a settled back four and an average striker playing up top for Chelsea this season, their championship-calibre credentials will be determined by the five that connects them together. This is Mourinhos most important project. The Fundamental Five Mourinho knows that these five players dictate the way his team is playing. When they lose, like they did at Sunderland in the League Cup last month, it makes Mourinho question how these five play, as he said: “We may have to take a step back in order to be more consistent at the back. Its something I dont want to do, to play more counterattacking, but Im giving it serious thought. If I want to win 1-0, I think I can, as I think its one of the easiest things in football. Its not so difficult, as you dont give players the chance to express themselves.” If Mourinho is giving counterattacking more thought, it requires a more solid double pivot in central midfield, but when you ask him about this area, Mourinho would admit he isnt fully sold on the style, saying, as he also did last month, this time after a win: “We are not a very solid team, at the same time compared with last season, when this team played a big part of the season with David Luiz and [John Obi] Mikel in front of the four defenders, so at the end of the day they had five defenders plus Mikel, Ramires playing on the right side closing one side down and the team was playing with one striker and Juan Mata behind him, defending well and trying to counterattack, thats not the direction we want to go.” Mourinho will only tell you publicly what he wants you to know. In truth, if Chelsea are to become the powerhouse Mourinho wants, the team needs to be able to attack better annd counter and that was shown on Sunday against United.ddddddddddddUp 3-0, he brought on Mikel to play alongside Luiz and pushed Ramires on to the right to close down the threat of Adnan Januzaj, who had moved there when Javier Hernandez came on. However, it is one thing to do this, up 3-0, but it is quite another to do it at 0-0. Yet, at 0-0 Chelsea still countered. And at Arsenal last month, a game that ended 0-0, they countered from deep positions on regular occasions. However, in that match never, was it more evident that the playmakers didnt trust Torres, as they often would break from deep positions and not want to give the ball to the Spaniard. “It was like they were playing with 10 men,” said Sky Sports analyst Gary Neville after the match and he was absolutely spot on. Ramires has been a permanent fixture in central midfield and, despite often saying Luiz wasnt a central midfielder, the Brazilian was selected there again for Sundays clash, just as he did last week at Hull and at home to Liverpool recently. Luiz is clumsy on the ball and gives away needless fouls, but, unlike Frank Lampard, he gets the best out of his midfield partner because, positionally, he is ideal. He allows Ramires to use his speed and energy, getting forward to connect with the playmakers further forward, but is also useful in counterattacks because he can often ignite them with the first pass as he thinks like a centre back when his team is not in possession of the ball. It is clear Mourinho wants to play a four-band system, which has been labeled 4-2-3-1, but is often really 4-3-2-1 with the central playmaker dropping deeper when not in possession, another reason why counterattacking can work for this team. When asked about the three behind the striker, earlier this season, Mourinho said: “We have six players for these three positions and they will give me chances as a manager to change, match to match, depending on the opponent, the game plan. It is based on these three players how we create our football.” This has certainly been true. Five months after that comment, Kevin De Bruyne has been sold, Juan Mata and Andre Schurrle have sat on the bench a lot and Mourinho has found out who the three players he relies on most in those positions – Willian, Oscar and Eden Hazard – and, with whoever playing as a striker continuing to be inconsistent, these playmakers certainly dictate Chelseas creativity. Hazard is the fun inside the fundamental five and has had a wonderful season, already scoring nine league goals. Of the three, he sticks to his position, on the left, more than most, but has the football intelligence to come central, to occupy the centre backs, when the striker comes deep, and even go right and attack from deep through the middle, as he did when he scored his wonderful individual goal against Liverpool. Keeping the Belgian predominantly on the left appears to be the reason Mourinho prefers Cesar Azpilicueta over Ashley Cole at left back. Mourinho rarely encourages his full backs to get forward and having a more defensive-minded full back down the left negates Hazards defensive issues, which were far too evident under both managers last season. Finding these combinations all over the pitch is what is crucial in finding the perfect balance for Chelsea going forward. Oscar is much better at combining with Ramires than Juan Mata, for example, while Willians workrate on the right has made him a perfect partner for Branislav Ivanovic. It was fitting, after a win on January 1st, that Mourinho said: “We are right in it, we have a good team but we need a few important bodies for next season, and I will say in the summer we will get it, I would say the team evolves in this direction, I can predict in the next season we will be real important contenders.” For many, Chelsea are real important contenders this season, but what Mourinho means is that, by then, his team will play the way he wants them to. Nemanja Matic has arrived and 4-3-3 may well be in the future, but for that Chelsea needs a legitimate star striker and they need to continually show their manager that they are getting better when they immediately lose the ball. Transitions are the theme for Chelsea to improve, but in this transitional time at the club, they might even be surprising the manager with just how well they are doing. The team not built for tomorrow is becoming the team to win today. PHILADELPHIA - Keeping key parts of their offence together for a long time is clearly a priority for the Philadelphia Eagles. The NFC East champions agreed to a five-year contract with wide receiver Riley Cooper and a seven-year deal with centre Jason Kelce on Thursday. They gave All-Pro left tackle Jason Peters a new five-year deal a day earlier. “Its a great reflection of ownership, a credit to Jeffrey Lurie for the flexibility to do what we need to be successful,” general manager Howie Roseman said. Cooper wouldve become a free agent next month after a breakout season in which he set career highs in receptions (47), yards receiving (835) and touchdowns (eight). His deal is worth $25 million over five years with about $10 million guaranteed, according to a person familiar with the contract who spoke on condition of anonymity because terms werent announced. “Riley is one of the toughest and hardest-working guys in our locker room,” coach Chip Kelly said. “We talk a lot about how players have to make the most of their opportunities, and he did just that last year. He used his size, strength and speed to make a lot of big plays for our team and Im excited to watch him build upon his success.” Cooper has come a long way since leaving the Eagles for three days during training camp after using a racial slur. “I didnt test free agency because I wanted to be here,” he said. “I wanted to be in Philly from the get-go.” Kelce was signed through 2016, and the new deal adds four years to his contract. Overall, its worth $37.5 million with $13 million guaranteed, according to the person familiar with the deals. “The numbers just sounded right,” Kelce said. Kelce was part of an offensive line that helped the Eagles lead the NFL in rushing while setting a franchise record for points (442). “Jason is the epitome of the type of player we want around here, both on and off the field,” Kelly said. “Hes tough, extremely intelligent and is a leader by his actions and by his words. His athleticism is something that really sticks out when you watch him play. There arent many centres that can get down the field like he does.” Roseman said the signings wont affect the teams draft plans. The Eagles shifted their focus from drafting for needs to drafting the best players available on the board a couple years ago. The results have been successful picks. “A lot has changed since 2011, starting with team philosophy,” Roseman said. “Im proud of the process weve developed to set ourselves up to contend.” The Eagles were 10-6 and won the NFC East title in Kellys first season as coach after going 4-12 in 2012. Cooper blossomed in his first season as a starter after Jeremy Maclin went down for the season with a knee injury in camp. Maclin, a former first-round pick, is scheduled to be a free agent, but the Eagles are hoping to bring him back. “He fits into our chemistry and what were trying to do,” Roseman said. Tuesday night marked the Toronto Maple Leafs starting goaltenders first game back after missing five straight with a groin injury. Bernier managed to get through it despite facing 48 shots in a 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues. “A lot of work. But I felt OK,” Bernier said. “It was a little sore obviously, but I was just trying to get it loose a little bit in between whistles and timeouts.” Bernier aggravated the groin injury March 13 in the first period in Los Angeles. James Reimer relieved him and beat the Kings, then lost five straight starts. With the Leafs season looking like it was going off the rails after three straight losses, Bernier pushed himself too hard at Fridays practice with the hope of returning for the weekend. A setback at that point delayed his return. By Monday, Bernier felt better but needed Tuesdays morning skate to know for sure. Wheen he experienced no soreness, the decision was made to start against the Blues.dddddddddddd Asked if he wouldve done the same in the 10th game of the season and did not rush back, Bernier responded: “Ah, I mean you always want to be back as soon as possible.” Bernier said he would be able to play back-to-back games moving forward. The Leafs visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night before returning home to face the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night. The process of managing this groin injury, the first of his career, will be an ongoing process. “We got a good staff and obviously a lot of stretching and take care of my body — lots of rest,” Bernier said. Even in a losing effort, the Leafs were glad to get Bernier back because without him they mightve not even been in the game. “He was outstanding in there,” winger James van Riemsdyk said. “He made big save after big save for us.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’

OAKLAND, Calif. — Even with a runner on second and an open base at first, Coco Crisp fully expected Boston closer Koji Uehara to come right after him. For the second straight game, Oaklands speedy leadoff hitter guessed right. Crisp singled in Alberto Callaspo with one out in the 10th inning and the Athletics beat the Red Sox 2-1 on Saturday to extend their winning streak to five games. “I was taking the approach they were going to come right after me,” said Crisp, who also drove in the game-winning run during Fridays 4-3 win. “I didnt want to wait around for the splitter so I was hoping that he would come in to what I was looking for, and he did. Another lucky guess.” Its the second game-ending hit for Crisp this season and seventh of his career. It also took Oakland off the hook after Bostons Dustin Pedroia scored the tying run in the eighth following a controvesial call that resulted in the ejection of As manager Bob Melvin. Boston put runners on the corners with two outs when Oakland reliever Luke Gregerson appeared to strike out Mike Napoli. Napoli argued that he fouled the ball off the dirt, and home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott agreed although television replays appeared to indicate otherwise. The umpiring crew met to discuss the play before upholding the original call. Under the current replay system, balls and strikes are not reviewable. “The plate umpire heard sound and thought the ball hit the ground and called it a foul ball,” said crew chief Gerry Davis. “This type of play happens quite often actually, its a difficult call for us. And in order to change it we have to positive (proof).” Gregerson, who had celebrated the apparent strikeout, bounced his next pitch in front of home plate. The ball ricocheted off the chest protector of catcher Stephen Vogt and rolled toward the mound as Dustin Pedroia scored from third. After Napoli flew out to end the inning, Melvin raced out from Oaklands dugout and angrily confronted Wolcott before getting tossed. “My feeling is that if theres a play that needs to be reviewed, you should review it. You just cant on that one,” Melvin said. “What I was told the call was was a foul ball that hit the dirt. And no one saw anything conclusive to overturn it. But after looking it, it was caught.” The play prevented Oakland starter Jesse Chavez from winning his second straight start. Chavez took a no-hitter into the sixth and held the Red Sox scoreless through seven before giving way to the bullpen. He struck out four and walked four. The As have won the first three games of this four-game series by a total of four runs. Callaspo drew a leadoff walk against reliever Edward Mujica (2-3) in the 10th and was sacrificed to second. Uehara replaced Mujica before Crisp lined his first pitch into right field. Boston right fielder Brock Holt made a strong throw but Callaspo slid home with the game-winner. “Coco being Coco,” Chavez said. “He did it last night and he did it again today.” Boston was shut out for the first seven innings before Pedroia scored on a wild pitch in the eighth. The Red Sox missed a chance to take the lead in the top of the 10th when Oakland reliever Dan Otero struck out David Ortiz with two on and two out. “Weve had situations get away from us in terms of men in scoring position,” Boston manager John Farrell said. “Weve got to continue to build opportunities. Whether or not we cash in on those, thats what we got to continue to focus on” Boston starter Rubby De La Rosa nearly matched Chavez in his first career appearance against the As. De La Rosa, who struck out four and walked four, retired the first six batters before Vogts triple off the extended wall in right-centre. Vogt scored on Alberto Callaspos sacrifice fly despite a stellar play by Holt, who had made a diving catch on Callaspos sinking liner in the gap in right-centre then threw home. Oakland managed only six runners over the next six innings until Callaspos leadoff walk in the 10th. NOTES: The As are 7-2 on this homestand. … Melvins ejection is his first this season. … Bostons Jon Lester (8-7) faces Oaklands Tommy Milone (5-3) on Sunday in a battle of lefties. Hamilton failed to complete a lap in the opening practice session due to a malfunctioning oil pressure sensor that shut down his engine, but recovered to set a time of 1 minute 29.625 seconds in the second session around the Albert Park circuit, 0.157 seconds ahead of Rosberg. “That was quite satisfying. On one lap the pace was good, and on the long run, as well,” Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said. He added, however, that Hamiltons early problem meant there is still cause for concern. “You need to be very careful because its enough to have a little problem and the race or qualifying could be finished.” Fernando Alonso of Ferrari was fastest in the first session but dropped to third in the second, half a second off Hamiltons time. Kimi Raikkonen was only seventh fastest in his return to the Italian team after suffering some problems, including failing to select first gear when trying a practice start. “Were still not on top of all the things we need to resolve,” Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali said. “The negative sides have to be addressed very quickly because the competition is strong and the time available is not very much.” The gaps at the top of the timesheets were reasonably close, which points toward a competitive qualifying session on Saturday and race on Sunday, rather than the Mercedes dominance that many had predicted. Red Bulls Sebastian Vettel was tipped to struggle in his campaign for a fifth straight drivers championship due to his teams preseason struggles with Renaults new V6 turbo engine, but he put in an encouraging performance to finish fourth fastest in practice.dddddddddddd Vettel and new teammate Daniel Ricciardo — who was sixth fastest — completed a total of 115 laps, which will provide valuable data on the car and engines performance. “Its been a very strong first day for us,” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said. "Weve had a very difficult preseason with numerous issues so it was refreshing to get some laps in and get a first proper feel for the car. “We can see there is quite a gap to the Mercedes and the Ferrari, but we are starting to feel what that gap is and by the end of the weekend we will have a clearer idea.” By contrast, fellow Renault-powered teams Lotus and Caterham did very little running due to a succession of technical problems, coupled with some spins into the gravel traps by Lotus drivers Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado. There has been concern that these two teams, and perhaps others, will sit out Saturdays final practice session to avoid encountering a problem that takes a long time to fix — as many do with these new complex engines — and therefore having to miss both qualifying and the race. Renault deputy managing director Rob White admitted the company was way behind schedule in integrating the complex new powertrains to its four customer teams. “Its completely unacceptable to come to the first race as relatively unprepared as we are,” White said. McLaren driver Jenson Button was fifth fastest in Fridays practice, while his rookie teammate Kevin Magnussen was ninth. Williams driver Valtteri Bottas was eighth, four places above his experienced new teammate Felipe Massa in 12th. Force Indias Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the top ten. Smith and Brandon Jennings opened the period with 3-pointers, and Detroit led the rest of the way. “We didnt give them easy looks,” said Detroit interim head coach John Loyer. “In that quarter I think we held them to 11 points and our contest rate was one of the highest of the year.” Despite the sub .500 record, the Pistons are just three games behind the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. “I have to be able to contribute, I dont want to sit home in April and think about what I could have done,” said Smith, who is averaging 21.1 ppg over his last nine. “I just want to try to leave it all out there on the floor.” nfl jerseys china . JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Jaguars are bringing back quarterback Chad Henne — and making him the starter. Henne and the team agreed to a two-year contract worth $8 million Friday, keeping him from hitting the free-agent market. Hennes deal includes $4.5 million guaranteed in the first year and comes four days before the beginning of free agency and one day before Henne could have started negotiating with other teams. Coach Gus Bradley made it clear on a conference call that the plan is for Henne to be the starter, even if the general manager Dave Caldwell selects a quarterback with the No. 3 pick in the May draft. “Thats our plan,” Bradley said. "If we did go that route, where we did bring in a quarterback at No. 3, wed like to create an environment where that quarterback could come in and just put all of his focus on preparation and learning without the distractions that come with it. That would be the ideal environment. “We feel good about that … And if we draft a guy at No. 3, if that should happen, he could learn and just see how he progresses. Now, if we did do that and he did really well, were going to be open to it. Were obviously going to play the best guy. We want to create an environment like that for him to compete in, and I think that would give him the best opportunity to get better.” Henne signed a two-year deal worth $6.75 million with Jacksonville in 2012. He started 13 games last season and threw for 3,421 yards, with 13 touchdowns with 14 interceptions, after replacing benched starter Blaine Gabbert. His return could mean the end of Gabberts tenure in Jacksonville, especially if the team drafts another quarterback. Gabbert is in the final year of his contract, and although his 2014 salary is guaranteed, the Jaguars are unlikely to keep Gabbert as the third-stringer. “It all depends on what we do in the draft,” Bradley said. “Just want to have flexibility in the draft to make sure that we can draft the best players at the position where were drafting and not to be handcuffed. Now, whether we decide to draft a quarterback in the draft or not, obviously thats something that Dave and I are looking at. I havent had any of those discussions like that with Blaine. I told him right after the season, come in, compete and lets go. Lets see what happens.” Henne is 5-14 as a starter in two seasons with the Jaguars. A second-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2008, Henne said he preferred to stay in Jacksonville. “From my standpoint, we did want to talk to a couple of teams,” Henne said. “But we figured if we got what we wanted — and Jacksonville was my No. 1 choice — that we would go ahead and sign with Jacksonville and not even venture out and talk with other teams. It was my No. 1 choice and I wanted to be there, so it all worked out for both sides.” The decision keeps Henne from having to learn a new offence for the fourth consecutive season. He will team with offensive co-ordinator Jedd Fisch in hopes of improving one of the worst passing attacks in the league. Henne also knows the team could draft a quarterback who could push him for the starting spot. “This being my seventh year, there are no surprises,” Henne said. “If they bring in a quarterback at No. 3, thats just only another guy in there thats going to try to compete and make me better and hopefully I can make him better. What it really all comes down to is helping the team win, and Ive always been a team player. Im going to bust my butt to be the starter and hopefully be the starter there for a long time. Whatever they do, thats their decision. My job is to help lead this team and be the starter Day 1.” . - One game. First Line Promotion Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun reports the Edmonton Oilers appear to be moving Sam Gagner to the first line in order to showcase him for a trade. The Oilers practiced with Gagner at right wing on the top line with Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on Thursday. Tychkowski speculates that though Gagner will likely be the first Oiler traded, he may not be the last as Jordan Eberle and Nail Yakupov could also be on the move. Tychkowski adds that the Oilers need to add many pieces to become a contender including multiple top-six forwards in 210-225 pound range, a top defence pair and a starting goaltender. A Perfect Fit? David Staples of the Edmonton Journal believes Andrew Laddd of the Winnipeg Jets is exactly what the Oilers need.dddddddddddd Staples considers the idea of the Oilers trading Gagner for Ladd, Blake Wheeler or Dustin Byfuglien. With Mark Scheifele and Brian Little solidified at centre on the top two lines, Gagner could have to play on the wing in Winnipeg. Jetting to New York? In a chat with readers, Katie Strang of ESPN SportsNation noted that the New York Rangers could also have interest in Jets right-handed defenceman Byfuglien. Strang notes the Rangers could soon find themselves in need of defence as they try to move Michael Del Zotto. As well, contract talks with Dan Girardi continue to make no major progress. Top of the List Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News reports that re-signing goaltender Ryan Miller is a top priority for new Buffalo Sabres general manager Tim Murray. However, if Miller is not interested in committing long-term, the Sabres will look to move the veteran netminder. Miller is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. Strang believes the Sabres must try to move Miller before the NHLs March 5 trade deadline. BEIJING – Norways Thomas Ulsrud led from start to finish in defeating Sweden 8-3 to claim the gold medal Sunday at the world mens curling championship in Beijing. Canadas Kevin Koe had to settle for fourth place after falling 7-5 to Switzerland in the bronze-medal match. Koes Calgary rink came into the 10th end down by three, but couldnt muster the comeback, scoring just a single point in the final end against the Swiss team. Despite failing to medal, Canadian coach Rick Lang said there was no reason to push any panic buttons, considering Canada has finished in the top six at every international curling event this season. Koe also gave credit to his team. “Im proud of the guys. We had a great run. Two weeks after winning gold in Sochi alongside her sister Chloe — who won silver at the Games — Justine again placed first in competition, this time at a moguls World Cup event on Saturday while her other sister, Maxime, placed third. “Its awesome. Im so proud of Maxime,” the 19-year-old Justine Dufour-Lapointe said. "Shes achieved so many great things and she really improved her skiing this year. Everyone sees it now and its great. “Whichever sister is next to me, Im always proud and happy for them.” Justine Dufour-Lapointe earned 23.41 points on the final run while Maxime took 22.67. Maxime Dufour-Lapointe, who watched her sisters win Olympic medals while finishing 12th in Sochi, said shes cherishing this moment. “Its my first podium that I share with one of my sisters and hopefully there will be a lot more of these,” the 25-year-old said. “I was so happy with my own run. JARAGUA DO SUL, Brazil — Vitor Belfort delivered one of the most spectacular knockouts of his career on Saturday, beating Luke Rockhold in the first round of the main event of “UFC on FX 8: Belfort vs. Rockhold.” Known as an aggressive striker, Belfort (23-10) instead paced himself as the engaged in the early going and showed restraint by not overcommitting against the larger Rockhold (10-2). But when the opportunity presented itself, Belfort delivered an incredible spinning heel kick that landed flush on Rockholds chin and sent him toppling to the floor. Belfort pounced with a flurry of punches on the ground, and referee Leon Roberts called off the fight at the 2:32 mark of the first round. Belfort, who has been heavily criticized in some circles for his commission-approved use of testosterone-replacement therapy improves to 4-1 in his past five fights and may have moved himself back into title contention at 185 pounds. The Brazilian is now 10-2 in the past six years with both losses coming to the men largely considered the worlds two best fighters in Jon Jones and Anderson Silva. Still, Belfort said hell wait for the UFC to issue his next assignment rather than ask for a specific opportunity. “Im here to fight,” Belfort said after the win. “I dont pick fights. I accept fights.” Belfort was awarded a US$50,000 bonus cheque as the evenings “Knockout of the Night.” In the nights co-feature, former Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (18-3) flashed his impressive jiu-jitsu skills in a first-round stoppage win over Chris Camozzi (19-6). Souza wasted little time getting the fight to the floor in the opening round, and while Camozzi showed capable defence for several minutes, “Jacare” was too much on the floor. The multiple time jiu-jitsu world champion quickly latched on an arm-triangle choke and squeezed tight, putting Camozzi to sleep in mere seconds. The official time came at the 3:37 mark of the first frame. With an impressive win in his UFC debut, Souza immediately establishes himself as a contender in the promotions 185-pound division. “Everyone was asking if I was going to get the jitters, but I didnt because of the crowd — the crowd has been fantastic,” Souza said. “We were grappling, and I was waiting for him to give me the opportunity. I saw his neck, and I just went for it.” Souza also pocketed an extra $50,000 as the evenings “Submission of the Night” winner. In a key lightweight contest, Brazilian slugger Rafael dos Anjos (19-6) earned a controversial split-decision win over American Evan Dunham (14-4). The pair traded shots on the feet throughout the 15-minute affair. It was dos Anjos who appeared to hold the power advantage, but a gritty Dunham consistently walked forward and linked together combinations. A pair of late takedowns in the opening to rounds appeared to earn Dunham the frames, but judges disagreed and awarded a unanimous-decision win with scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28. UFC president Dana White, who was not in attendance for the event, immediately took to Twitter to protest the decision. “Dunham got ROBBED!!!!” White wrote. In the nights first main-card contest middleweight Rafael Natal (16-4-1) earned a unanimous decision over local hero Joao Zeferino (13-5). Zeferino, who earned his way on to the card as an injury replacement with less than three-weeks notice, looked sharp in the opening round but visibly tired as the contest wore on. Natal, while cautious, controlled the pace and positioning over the final 10 minutes en route to the clear-cut decision win. “I knew that being called on in such short notice, he wouldnt have enough time to get in shape,” Natal said after the win. “I thought that although I lost the first round, I was going to get the second and third, and thats what happened.” UFC on FX 8 drew a reported 7,642 fans, according to UFC exec Marshall Zelaznik. Crisp, who scored the tying run with two outs in the eighth inning, hit a towering home run off Seattle reliever Hector Noesi (0-1) on an 0-1 pitch. The ball landed just above the out-of-town scoreboard in right field. Its the sixth game-ending hit of Crisps career. Yoenis Cespedes and Sam Fuld also drove in runs for Oakland, which rallied from two runs down for its first walkoff win of the season. Drew Pomeranz (1-0), the fifth As pitcher, worked one scoreless inning for the win. Abraham Almonte had two hits and an RBI for Seattle. The Mariners were coming off a series sweep of Anaheim and were attempting to go 4-0 for the first time since 1985. After scoring 28 runs in the three games against the Angels, Seattles offence managed just six hits against Oakland and stranded seven base runners. The Mariners scored in the first without the benefit of a hit. Almonte hit a grounder that went through the legs of Oakland infielder Alberto Callaspo, who was making his first career start at first base. Second baseman Nick Punto chased down the ball in right field but threw wildly back to the bag for another error, allowing Almonte to take second. Two batters later, Canos groundout scored Almonte. Almontes RBI single off Oakland starter Jesse Chavez in the fifth drove in Logan Morrison and made it 2-0. That put Seattle starter Roenis Elias in shape to become the first Cuban-born pitcher to win a game for Seattle before the Mariners bullpen gave up the lead. Elias, an all-star in the minors a year ago, aallowed one runs and two hits in five effective innings but left with a no-decision.dddddddddddd The 25-year-old lefty allowed only two runners past first base and struck out three and walked three. The Seattle rookie didnt give up a hit until Nick Puntos sharp single to left with two outs in the fifth. The play was reviewed and upheld. Oakland failed to score after loading the bases with two outs in the seventh before Cespedes tripled in Crisp to tie it with two outs in the eighth. Chavez, making his first start since 2012, allowed two runs and five hits over six innings. TAMPA, Fla. — New York Yankees reliever David Robertson is not overanalyzing his role as Mariano Riveras replacement. Robertson is moving from an eighth-inning setup man to closer following Riveras retirement. “Its the same deal,” Robertson said Tuesday after a pre-spring training workout at the Yankees minor league complex. “Throwing the eighth or ninth inning, youve still got to get three outs. Youve got to be effective. You cant give up a lead. Im not going to try to overthink the whole situation.” Rivera has said that Robertson is the right man for the role. The former teammates spent time together last month at the New York baseball writers dinner. “First thing he said is, You scared?” Robertson recalled. “Im like, No. Its typical Mo. Hes all over my case already. I havent even thrown a pitch yet, and hes on me. He knows I can do it, and I think I know I can do it. Its just a matter of actually stepping out there and doing it.” Given the chance to fill in as closer when Rivera injured a knee in 2012, Robertson strained muscle in his left ribcage. Rafael Soriano took over as closer for the rest of the season. Robertson went 5-1 with a 2.04 ERA in 70 games last year, striking out 77 in 66 1-3 innings. “Hes been in some huge situations here,” Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. “Hes been around Mo. Hes in a good position to know what he has to do. Hes done everything that you could ask him to do to this point to become a closer. Now its just a matter of executing the pitches. Unless he gets overwhelmed by the situation, I dont anticipate major problems.” Rothschild also said CC Sabathia has increased his throwing program during the off-season to build up arm strength and stamina. Coming off elbow surgery to remove a bone spur in October 2012, Sabathia was 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA last year. “The last couple winters, three or four really, he hasnt been able to do a lot with going back to his knee and then the elbow last winter,” Rothschild said. “Hes been able to do a lot more this winter, so coming into spring training I think hell be in a little different place than he has been the last couple years.” NOTES: Rothschild has had email communication with Japanese RHP Masahiro Tanaka. “Theres going to be adjustments hes going to have to make,” Rothschild said. “Hes got the presence of mind to know what he needs to do to adjust when he gets here.” … SS Derek Jeter, limited to 17 games last season due to injuries, took 48 swings during his second day of batting practice. Only Manchester City has been more lethal in front of goal, with the team — a point behind Liverpool and Arsenal in third — scoring 51 goals in 17 games.SALT LAKE CITY — After spraining his ankle, Chris Paul might have lost some quickness. He compensated with determination. Paul shook off the injury and the teams early sluggishness to score 18 points and extend the Los Angeles Clippers winning streak to 10 with a 96-87 victory over the Utah Jazz on Friday night. “I knew I had just had to find a way,” Paul said. “We already said at halftime, its not going to be pretty every night, but stay the course and find a way to win.” Before Paul got hurt, it certainly wasnt pretty and the Clippers struggled. Blake Griffin had 20 points, even though he never got into a comfortable flow. “Its never an easy game coming into a place like this,” he said. “You cant relax and walk into a building and think youll just win because of who you are or what you done, or a streak youre on.” Los Angeles had its lowest points total during the streak, but the Clippers won this time with defence, forcing 20 turnovers by the Jazz that led to 31 points. “Thats what we kept saying in the huddle, Lets play our defence!” Paul said. “Early in the game, it was like they were just in a rocking chair. They were swinging it and getting everything they wanted.” The Jazz led 70-60 in the third quarter, but the Clippers capitalized on a rash of Utah miscues and poor shot selection to go on a 20-2 run. “We locked in. The intensity and the effort was finally there,” Griffin said. In the midst of the surge, Paul landed awkwardly after scoring and sprained his left ankle. “It was the freakiest thing ever. I layed it up and no one was around me but when I landed, my left foot was on the stanchion,” said Paul, who returned after quickly getting the ankle taped between the third and fourth quarters. The point guard limped up and down the court, but still quarterbacked the Clippers come-from-behind-third quarter burst. He had seven points and three assists in the six-minute run that ended with Will Greens 3-pointer with 10:37 to play that made it 80-72. Griffins inside basket extended the lead to 85-74 before the Jazz made one final surge. Hayward made a 3-pointer that closed the gap to 90-85 with 3:25 remaining, but the Jazz couldnt score again until 24 seconds remained and the game was decided. Trey Burke had 18 points — his thirrd straight with at least that many — and Derrick Favours also scored 18, but the Jazz made only seven of 19 fourth-period shots and have dropped eight of nine contests.dddddddddddd The Clippers scored an average of 115 points a game in their previous nine, but were sluggish early against Utah. The Jazz led by as many as 13 in the first half as they played with more energy than theyve shown in the past several games. One thrilling sequence exemplified Utahs determination near the end of the half. Jeremy Evans and Gordon Hayward blocked back-to-back fast-break layups by the Clippers and brought the crowd to its feet. “Our biggest area of growth will be maintaining that type of intensity throughout the game and playing that way for 48 minutes,” Burke said. The Clippers missed the shooting and playmaking of Jamal Crawford (calf), but turned to their stars, Paul and Griffin, to bring them back and claim their ninth straight against the Jazz. “Chris started being more aggressive,” Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers said. “I think sometimes he wants to be the point guard, but tonight we needed his scoring.” Griffin ranks fourth in the league with more than 28 points per game since Feb. 3 and has now scored at least 20 points in 25 consecutive games, the second-longest current streak in the NBA. But it was defence that turned the tide. “It was definitely a defensive thing,” Griffin said. Matt Barnes contributed 15 points and Darren Collison had 14 as the Clippers set a season-high for fast-break points with 31. “Were tough to guard in transition. Blake makes some great decisions,” Paul said. Starting in place of injured Marvin Williams (back), Enes Kanter had 11 points and 15 rebounds, but shot just 5 for 17 for the Jazz. “In the second half, they were just aggressive and we couldnt match them,” Kanter said. NOTES: In honour of the upcoming St. Patricks Day holiday, the Jazz wore their road green uniforms. The Clippers played in their regular red away attire. … Collisons layup at the first-half buzzer was disallowed after video review. … The Jazz fell to 0-12 when Williams is out with injury, while the Clippers are 6-0 without Crawford. … Paul had seven assists to move into 30th place all-time, passing Mookie Blaylock. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Arizona Diamondbacks and Bronson Arroyo have agreed on a two-year, $23.5 million contract with a club option for a third. The right-hander, who turns 37 in two weeks, has a 138-127 record with a 4.91 ERA. He pitched the last eight seasons with the Cincinnati Reds before becoming a free agent. Last year, Arroyo was 14-12 with a 3.79 ERA. The Diamondbacks had been searching for another veteran starter for their rotation and had been in contact over the past few days. Arroyo gets $9.5 million each of the next two seasons plus a $4.5 million buyout if the team doesnt exercise its $11 million option for 2016. Arroyo reportedly also had discussions with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles. Arroyo, who also pitched for Pittsburgh and Boston, has been a workhorse for the Reds, starting no fewer than 32 games in each of his eight seasons with the team. He has topped 200 innings in eight of his past nine seasons. The exception was 2011, when he pitched 199. He immediately becomes Arizonas most experienced starter. The others are right-handers Trevor Cahill and Brandon McCarthy and young left-handers Patrick Corbin and Wade Miley. General manager Kevin Towers had said at a news conference earlier in the day that starting pitching depth was the biggest issue the team needed to address. Team President Derrick Hall confirmed that a deal had been reached Friday afternoon. cheap jerseys . So far, his encore is even better. Under the gaze of nine NFL and four CFL scouts, Duvernay-Tardif confirmed why hes one of the most touted Canadian football prospects in recent memory. The six-foot-five offensive lineman for the McGill Redmen had his private pro day in Montreal on Thursday. He leapt, sprinted and tackled during the two-hour training session, setting personal bests and impressing his visitors from out of town. Its been a while since a CIS player garnered such attention from both sides of the border. “It doesnt happen every day, sure,” said the 23-year-old, who chose to let scouts from both professional football leagues assess his abilities simultaneously, rather than attend last weeks CFL combine. “And its not every day a Canadian gets the opportunity to do what Im doing. I dont know if this is historic. But Im really happy it happened to me.” Duvernay-Tardif, a medical student at Montreals McGill University, is projected as a third-to-fourth round pick in Mays NFL draft. The native of St-Hilaire, Que., scored a personal best in the broad jump Thursday, and some scouts clocked him in at less than five seconds in the 40-yard dash — impressive results for a player weighing just under 300 pounds. “Ive been training for so long for these tests,” said Duvernay-Tardif, who dedicated five months of work and conditioning to his pro day. “It was time to show what I could do. I knew what I was going to hit. I hit those numbers, and even better.” About the only downside was Duvernay-Tardif registering 34 reps in the bench press. While thats a more than respectable showing, Duvernay-Tardif was looking for between 37 and 40 reps. Still, his results in most categories place him amongst the top performers from last Februarys NFL scouting combine, a week-long event where the top U.S. college football prospects display their abilities before league coaches, scouts and GMs. In Duvernay-Tardifs case, the NFL came to him. Scouts from Oakland, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Arizona, New York, Green Bay, Chicago, San Francisco and Buffalo made the trip north to see first-hand if the Quebec native has what it takes to play in the NFL. Lee Gissendaner, area scout for the Green Bay Packers, was pleased with Duvernay-Tardifs overall performance. “The most impressive was the way he moved around,” said Gissendaner, now in his 13th yeear scouting for the Packers.dddddddddddd. "He showed the versatility that you like, the flexibility. He did everything in the workout. “He seems like a guy who likes to compete. He responded to what we asked him to do, followed directions. His work ethic was on display.” NFL scouts have been watching Duvernay-Tardif closely since the East-West Shrine game in St. Petersburg, Fla., last January. He and Manitoba defensive tackle Evan Gill — another top prospect for this years CFL draft — represented Canada at the annual U.S. college all-star game. “You look for a guy to stand out at this level,” said Gissendaner. “When he came down to Florida, he held his own. We saw some raw ability, and some raw tools that maybe we can develop.” Scouts will continue reviewing film, compare some of their top prospects, and put together draft and free agency boards until the start of the NFL draft May 8 in New York. If the offensive lineman gets his way he will be drafted by an NFL team and head to training camp this summer. There are only a handful of Canadians in the NFL, and earning a spot on a starting line in the U.S. is no easy task. And Duvernay-Tardif is actually the top-rated prospect for the coming CFL draft according to the latest rankings. Alongside NFL scouts Thursday were members of the Montreal Alouettes, Calgary Stampeders, Toronto Argonauts, and Ottawa Redblacks. “Hes one of the top picks in this draft, for sure,” said Joey Abrams, the Alouettes assistant director of player personnel. "Its difficult to find a kid like this, with his skill set and abilities. Hes a rare specimen. This is unprecedented. Ive never seen this before. “He met expectations. Everyone knew he was big and strong, and he showed that today.” If the NFL doesnt come calling, Duvernay-Tardif is more than happy to play in is home country. “I would love to play in the CFL,” he said. “I played against a lot of people that now play in the CFL. It would be great to play in that league. Im going to play and do my best wherever I end up.” The CFL will hold its annual draft by conference call May 13. Notes: Earlier in the week, Duvernay-Tardif appeared on a two-page spread in the latest edition of Sports Illustrated. The article was titled “Heal Thyself.” a Last fall, Duvernay-Tardif was awarded the J.P. Metras Trophy as Canadian university footballs top lineman. ANAHEIM, Calif. — Ryan Getzlaf and Jonas Hiller propelled the Anaheim Ducks into the second half of their season with the NHLs best record and ample reason to think they could get even better in the new year. Getzlaf scored his 20th goal and added two assists, Francois Beauchemin got his first goal of the season, and the Ducks beat the San Jose Sharks 6-3 Tuesday night, closing the best December in club history with their 11th victory in 12 games. Nick Bonino and Matt Beleskey each had a goal and an assist, and Hiller made 33 saves in his ninth consecutive win as Anaheim improved to 15-0-2 at Honda Center, remaining the only NHL team without a regulation loss at home. With another overpowering offensive performance despite a slow start, the Ducks also avenged San Joses 3-1 victory at the Shark Tank on Sunday that snapped Anaheims franchise-record winning streak. “Were a good hockey club, and we know it,” said Getzlaf, the NHLs third-leading scorer with 47 points. “But we also know weve got to get better. Games like this, when you come out flat, teams will bury you.” Andrew Cogliano scored a short-handed goal while playing in his 500th consecutive game for Anaheim, which kicked off the second half of its schedule and headed into the new year at a franchise-record 29-8-5. The Ducks lead San Jose by seven points in the Pacific and sit even with Chicago atop the overall NHL standings with 63 points. Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau has built one of the best teams in hockey, but the Ducks dissatisfaction with their start against San Jose indicated a hunger to get better. “Its been a lot of fun, and I hope we can keep this going,” said Hiller, whose winning streak is the longest in club history. “Its nice to be up there in the standings and to be able to achieve something like we have this year, but I dont think anybody is satisfied yet.” Kyle Palmieri also scored for the Ducks, who shredded their Pacific Division rivals and chased Antti Niemi with five goals in an 11 1/2-minute span of the final two periods. Dan Boyle and Bracken Kearns scored power-play goals as the Sharks four-game winning streak ended with a dismaying defensive effort in front of Niemi, who stopped 29 shots. Logan Couture also scored for San Jose, which dominated the first period before falling apart in the second. Alex Stalock replaced Niemi after Getzlaf blasted a wrist shot past the Finnish goalie for Anaheims fifth goal early in the third period. “You want to keep the momentum going, but the second period we were just caught staring, and it definitely cost us,” Sharks captain Joe Thornton said. Two nights after the Sharks held Anaheim to one goal for the first time in 17 games since Nov. 22, the Ducks showed they havent lost their teamwork and offensive power by putting up a franchise-record 25 shots in the second period. “We were on our toes, winning the races,” San Jose coach Todd McLellan said. "Where did it go in the second? I guess thats the big question we have to ask our group. What do you do? What do you bring to the team? Are you an energy guy? Do you hit, block shots, or just take up space? “We have got some guys … that need to perform a little bit better.” Beauchemin got a rebound goal after a lengthy cycle in the second. Couture tied it with his 12th goal before Bonino dived headfirst onto the ice to slap home Getzlafs rebound, ending Anaheims eight-game drought on power plays. Bonino then stole a pass behind San Joses net and got it in front to Beleskey for the grinding forwards second goal of the season. After Getzlaf chased Niemi, Cogliano put home Saku Koivus rebound when the Sharks gave up a 3-on-0 short-handed rush moments later. Cogliano became the fifth NHL player to play in 500 consecutive games from the start of his career. NOTES: San Jose announced F Tomas Hertl had successful surgery Tuesday to repair damaged ligaments in his right knee. … Dustin Penner was a healthy scratch for the Ducks. Jakob Silfverberg took his place on the top line with Getzlaf and Corey Perry. … Sharks C Tommy Wingels missed his first game of the season after running into the boards on Sunday. … Sharks rookie LW Matt Nieto had an assist while making his first NHL appearance in his native Southern California. He is from nearby Long Beach. The Montreal Canadiens goaltenders dogs Motty (“short for Mozart”) and Duke got loose overnight.Vijay Singh received a favourable ruling in his lawsuit against the PGA Tour when a judge allowed his complaint that he was treated differently from other players under the tours anti-doping policy. The New York State Supreme Court only partially dismissed the lawsuit, meaning the case could be headed for trial. The tour announced a year ago that Singh would be suspended for saying in a Sports Illustrated story that he took deer antler spray, which was believed to contain the banned substance IGF-1. Late in the appeals process, the tour dropped the case when the World Anti-Doping Agency said deer antler spray was no longer a concern. Singh sued the tour in May — the day before The Players Championship — saying it exposed him to “public humiliation and ridicule” during the investigation. In Tuesdays order, Judge Eileen Bransten threw out five of seven elements in the tours motion to dismiss. Four of them effectively agreed with the tours argument that Singh had to abide by the anti-doping policy because he willingly signed up as a PGA Tour member. Another part of the ruling rejected Singhs claim of intentional emotional distress. “This is a big win,” said Peter Ginsberg, an attorney for the Hall of Fame golfer from Fiji. “The cornerstone of our lawsuit is that the PGA Tour violated in covenant to treat Vijay fairly, and the court has allowed us to proceed with that claim.” Asked if the tour or Singh had talked about a settlement, Ginsberg declined comment. PGA Tour spokesman Ty Votaw said it does not comment on pending legal matters. Along with ruling in favour of Singh on his allegations of fair treatment, the court sided with his complaint that the tour unfairly held $99,980 in PGA Tour earnings while the case was being investigated. Singh says his prize money was being held in escrow since the 2013 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, before he was informed of his suspension. Most daamaging for the tour in Tuesdays ruling is the potential for Singh to demand evidence involving other players.dddddddddddd Both sides already are battling over how much information the tour should hand over regarding its handling of other players. “So far the tour has put up a road block and failed to produce anything,” Ginsberg said. “The court has made it clear that the PGA has to satisfy our requests. Well go through discovery, and we expect to go all the way through with this.” The tour is the only major sports league in America that does not announce how it punishes its players for violations, such as bad conduct. Even when John Daly told The Associated Press in 2008 that he had been suspended for six months for his conduct, the tour would not confirm it. The anti-doping policy requires the tour to announce when a player has been suspended for performance-enhancing drugs (but not which one). Doug Barron is the only player to have been suspended since the program began in July 2008. But the commissioner does not have to disclose any suspension for recreational drugs. Even though Singh agreed to the anti-doping policy as a PGA Tour member, Bransten said Singh could proceed under the “good faith and fair dealing” because of his allegation that the tour was “reckless in its administration of the program.” The tour had warned players about deer antler spray because it was believed to contain an insulin-like growth factor on the tours list of banned substances. It can only be detected through a blood test — the tour only tests urine samples. But the admission of taking a banned substance constitutes a positive test under the tours anti-doping policy. Singhs lawyers have said the amount of IGF-1 in the spray is so diluted that it would be comparable to pouring a shot glass of bourbon in an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and then drinking a shot from the pool water. LONDON — Lukas Podolski scored twice as Arsenal came from a goal down to beat West Ham 3-1 in the Premier League on Tuesday and provisionally reclaim the last Champions League spot. Arsenal trailed to Matthew Jarvis 40th-minute opener, but Podolski equalized before the break and Arsenal dominated the second half. Olivier Giroud made amends for an earlier miss by showing off a delicate touch in the area to put Arsenal ahead in the 55th and Podolski finished off the win with another clinical strike in the 78th. Arsenal leapfrogged Everton into fourth place, although the Merseyside club is only one point behind with a game in hand. “It was a hard-fought win, but a very, very important one,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. “The key was (to score) just before halftime. In the second half we controlled well the game.” Coming off their penalty-shootout win against Wigan in the FA Cup semifinals on Saturday, Arsenal looked sluggish at the start. West Ham was the better team for the first 30 minutes, but when the opening goal came it was against the run of play following a period of sustained Arsenal pressure. Kim Kallstrom, making his first start for Arsenal since joining on loan in January, lost track of Antonio Nocerino down the right flank as the West Ham player broke into the area. Nocerinos shot was stopped by Wojciech Szczesny, but Jarvis was there to head in the rebound in a goalmouth scramble. Jarvis then could have earned a penalty shortly afterward when Bacary Sagna clearly clipped his legs in the area, but he stayed on his feet and the referee waved play on. “Im grateful for that,” Wenger said about Jarvis staying on his feet. “I dont think it was a penalty, but he touched him. Can you be too honest? Ill leave you that judgement.” West Ham manager Sam Allardyce certainly thought so. “The facts are that when you stay on your feet the referees dont give penalties,” Allardyce said. “When theres contact, you have to go down and make the referees mind up for him. Theres no reward for honesty.” Arsenal responded shortly thereafter as Santi Cazorla found Podolski in the area and the Germany forward took one touch to create space before slotting a clinical finish inside the far post. Before that, Giroud had wasted Arsenals two best chances as the France striker couldnt make contact with Podolskis cross in the 14th, and then wasted a one-on-one opportunity in the 30th. Cazorla picked out Giroud that time as well, but the Frenchman went for finesse rather than power, trying to chip the ball with the outside of his boot past Adrian, but the goalkeeper palmed it away. Giroud made no mistake the next time, however, after Thomas Vermaelen picked him out with a long ball into the area. Giroud downed it with a perfect first touch and then slotted a shot between Adrians legs to put the hosts up for good. Arsenal kept pressing and the third goal came after Giroud broke down the left and sent a high pass in toward substitute Aaron Ramsey, who picked out Podolski with a header and the German blasted a high shot into the net. “Hes a fantastic finisher,” Wenger said of Podolski. “The one you want to have a chance is him.” nfl jerseys china . The Argentina international has agreed to a new contract with Barcelona that could give him $27 million for each season. Combined with other performance-backed incentives, the 26-year-old Messi is expected to make millions more every year. Barcelona did not release details of the deal, but called it “an agreement to adjust the terms in the contract binding Leo Messi to the club.” Messi, who is expected to sign the restructured deal in the coming days, already has a contrract with the Spanish champions through the 2017-18 season, making a reported $22 million per season.dddddddddddd He also has a buy-out clause of 250 million euros ($343 million). Messi is seven goals shy of becoming the Spanish leagues all-time leading scorer. He has scored 354 goals at Barcelona, including five straight seasons of at least 40. The four-time Ballon dOr winner has scored 28 league goals this season. “Everything he does well also rubs off on us and makes us better,” Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said Friday, a day before his team plays Atletico Madrid for the Spanish league title. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Lleyton Hewitt beat Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals at the U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships on Thursday. The No. 3 seed leads the career series with Baghdatis 3-2, winning their first match since 2010 when Baghdatis had to withdraw with an injured shoulder. Hewitt won his 29th career title in Brisbane this year. He needed 91 minutes to finally beat Baghdatis for the first time outside of Australia and continue his strong start this year. “Marcos, hes always a tough competitor, and this type of court suits his style as well,” Hewitt said. “He hits the ball hard and flat out there, and if hes making a lot of first serves its not easy. I just sort of bided my time out there and took my chances. Had to fight hard early in the second set to hold serve and got a bit of momentum after that.” Hewitt will play American Michael Russell on Friday. Ivo Karlovic of Croatia beat second-seeded Feliciano Lopez of Spain 7-6 (2), 6-4, serving up 19 aces and losing only six points off his serve. He will play American Jack Sock. Earlier, American qualifier Alex Kuznetsov upset eighth-seeded Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1) to reach his first ATP quarterfinal. He will play fourth-seeded Lu Yen-Hsun of Taiwan, who beat American qualifier Denis Kudla 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Hewitt could join Roger Federer (932) and Rafael Nadal (669) as the third active player with 600 match victories if he wins the title in Memphis. Baghdatis had the benefit of an opening match here in Memphis, while Hewitt had a bye. Baghdatis also opened the match serving well with four aces, and he broke Hewitt in back-to-back games to go up 5-1 and serve out for the first set. Then Hewitt settled down and faced only one more break point in the final two sets. That came in the first game of the second set, and the former No. 1 took advantage of Baghdatis double-faulting four times and struggling with his serve. Baghdatis said he was very aggressive early. “After having a break point in the first game of the second set, I stopped playing, stopped playing aggressive and he started getting to points and rallies,” Baghdatis said. “He was dictating the rallies and basically thats it. Thats all. Couldnt get back to where I started from.” Hewitt said he needed a bit of time to adjust in his first match at The Racquet Club. He also started mixing up his serve as well. “He was taking a swipe at all of my serves early on so I just had to find a way to hang in there more than anything,” Hewitt said. “Just the pace of the court, the ball, just try and find that rhythm out there.” Kuznetsov, who turned pro in 2004 and just turned 27, finally won the seventh match of his career in his 38th match. KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Sporting Kansas City has acquired 19-year-old Brazilian defender Igor Juliao on loan from Fluminense FC to occupy one of its international roster spots. Juliao joined Fluminenses academy at 8 years old and capped his youth career by leading the clubs under-20 team to back-to-back championships. He travelled to the U.S. for the Dallas Cup last year, his club losing to eventual champion Fulham FC at the Cotton Bowl. Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes said Friday that he first saw Juliao at the Disney Pro Soccer Classic. After scouting him for six days and watching four games, Vermes knew the talented young defender would fit with the MLS Cup champions. Juliao calls the move to Sporting KC “a new challenge for me. Given an extra week to stew over the worst start in 45 years, Tomlin is tweaking the lineup hoping to find a spark that will help his team begin the long road back to respectability. The 28th season of indoor pro lacrosse begins Dec. 28 with a Vancouver entry for the first time in 10 years and a novel new collective bargaining agreement. Players have accepted a two-year pay freeze even though schedules have increased from 16 games to 18, and lineups have decreased from 20 to 18. So, how did the new seven-year CBA come to pass? “We were concerned with the financial stability of the league,” said Edmonton Rush captain Chris Corbeil, who took part in every bargaining session. “We realize a lot of teams are struggling to stay in business and as players we want to see the league survive so were able to play lacrosse for years to come.” Steve Govett, the Colorado Mammoth president who chairs the NLL board of governors, lauds the players co-operation in ensuring the leagues stability. “We feel like the NLL has turned a corner,” Govett said. “Our focus (in CBA talks) had to be on creating positive momentum for all of our teams and to show the viability of our league to potential new partners for expansion, for television and for sponsorships. We had to reduce costs without damaging the product.” The Rochester Knighthawks, Toronto Rock, Philadelphia Wings, Buffalo Bandits and Minnesota Swarm, who move over from the West, make up the new East division, while the Edmonton Rush, Calgary Roughnecks, Vancouver (formerly Washington) Stealth and Colorado Mammoth represent the West. Six teams, instead of last years eight, will advance to playoffs. Gone are the single-game eliminations of previous years as playoffs will now be two-game sets beginning in the arenas of lower-seeded teams. Division leaders will get first-round byes and await the survivors of playoffs between the second- and third-place teams. If two-game sets are split, mini-games of 10 minutes will decide winners. Reducing active rosters to 18 — 16 runners and two goalies — will force in-game adjustments. “That was, for me, one of the toughest pills to swallow,” Corbeil said. “Last season we had 10 defencemen — two five-man units — and eight forwards for games. Now well be mixing and matching. Guys are going to be double-shifting and sucking wind. Conditioning and stamina are going to play an even bigger role.” Salaries range from a $9,207 max for rookies to a $27,217 max for veterans, with an exception for one or two “franchise” players per team wholl get an additional $5,000 for the season. A cost of living raise of 3.5 per cent a year kicks in in 2016. The heightened competition for jobs caused by reduced roster size has combined with the introduction of a salary cap of $400,000 per team to squeeze out some well-known players. A prime example was the release by Colorado of former captain Gavin Prout, 35. “For years, Gavin Prout was synonymous with the Colorado Mammoth,” said Govett. "Unfortunately, he is a casualty of the reduced roster size and newly-implemented salary cap of the CBA. “Elements of the agreement made for some incredibly difficult decisions. This was the toughest. With just 16 runners dressing each game, theres a significant emphasis on speed and athleticism. Younger and faster players are the new NLL.” Rochester will be seeking a third straight NLL title and that is entirely possible ggiven the return of all significant players, the patient coaching of Mike Hasen, the consistent goaltending of Matt Vinc, a staunch defence led by captain Sid Smith, and the scoring exploits of Cody Jamieson, Dan Dawson, et al.dddddddddddd Veteran forward Mike Accursi has retired and accepted an executive role. Others packing it in are Jimmy Quinlan, who passes the Edmonton captains “C” to Chris Corbeil, Torontos Blaine Manning and Cam Woods, Buffalos Mike Hominuck and Jon Harasym, and Colorados Rich Morgan. Casey Powell, the NLLs all-time leading American point-getter, has told the Mammoth hes sitting out for now, and transition speedster Paul Rabil is likewise unavailable to the Wings as some of the best U.S. players appear to be passing on the NLL season to avoid the risk of injury before the world field lacrosse championship in Denver this summer. Some of the most significant personnel changes involve the Bandits. After firing head coach Darris Kilgour, they replaced him with Troy Cordingley, who was let go by Toronto even though he was named coach of the year for helping the Rock to a league-best 10-6 season. Buffalo GM Steve Dietrich traded away future draft picks to get 34-goal shooter Ryan Benesch from Minnesota and tough defenceman Rory Smith from Colorado. One constant in Buffalo, however, is all-time NLL scoring leader John Tavares, 45, who will play his 23rd season in Bandits black and orange. The leagues other golden oldie, 39-year-old John Grant Jr., signed a new four-year contract with Colorado. Grant scored 43 goals last season. In all, there will be only seven players over the age of 35 on green NLL carpets in January as the youth-oriented league gathers momentum into the new season. John Lovell, an assistant under Cordingley, takes over as head coach in Toronto, and Blane Harrison is the new head coach in Philadelphia after GM Johnny Mouradian relinquished that job and promoted Harrison. The youngest and fastest team in the league will undoubtedly be Minnesota, which is blending five 2013 draft picks including No. 1 Logan Schuss and No. 2 Jason Noble into a lineup that already has four 2012 first-rounders. The Dec. 28 openers begin with Philadelphia at Buffalo, Minnesota at Rochester and Edmonton at Colorado. Calgary opens in Toronto on Jan. 3 and Vancouver opens in Colorado on Jan. 4. The NLL could be one lucrative league-wide TV deal away from flourishing and, with more and more all-sports channels starting up, it could happen sooner rather than later. If not, the leagues devoted fans will continue to enjoy some of the lowest ticket prices of any pro sport. “This was an extremely collaborative process, one that we hope will set the stage for the long-term stability and growth of the NLL,” Govett said. "By allowing us to focus on fixing our business model, the nine teams will remain dedicated to the cause while attracting new franchise owners to the mix, ultimately replacing jobs that have been lost over time and growing the pie for everyone. “The existing players chose to understand that the sacrifices they are making today, along with owners that have been sacrificing for some time to bring this great game to the public, need to be in unison if the league is to make it to that ever-elusive next level.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing will field a second IndyCar entry for Oriol Servia this season in at least four races, more if sponsorship can be secured. Servia is currently scheduled to compete at Long Beach, Barber, the inaugural road course race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500 in a deal announced Wednesday. The Rahal organization last month finished a drawn-out process to secure sponsorship from the National Guard for Graham Rahals car. Team owner Bobby Rahal has insisted he would only field two cars if it would strengthen the organization, and Graham Rahal said he told his dad he didnt want to “rob Peter to pay Paul” just to have a teammate. But in Servia, the organization gets a veteran driver who was briefly teammates with Graham Rahal at Newman-Haas-Lanigan Racing in 2009. Servia also ran the Indy 500 that season for Bobby Rahal. “We have had the pleasure of working with Oriol before and are looking forward to his return,” Bobby Rahal said. “I have always respected his ability to develop the race car and be a productive member of the team, so when it came time to consider the possibility of a second entry, he was right at the top of the list. We are happy to have him back and look forward to having him help the team progress toward the front.” A native of Pals, Spain, Servia has made 191 starts in CART, Champ Car and the IndyCar Series since 2000. He won at Montreal in 2005, has 19 career podium finishes and was fourth in the 2012 Indianapolis 500. His Panther DRR team shut down after last years Indy 500, and he ran seven of the final 14 races for Panther Racing. “Continuity is a very important part of success in any racing team,” said Servia. “By my moving to Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, this happens at many different levels. On the team side, in 2009 we did the 500 together as a one-off race. We were running very strong until we had a fuel pump fail on us, but that one race left us with a sensation that we could do great things together. That same year I did a short stint at Newman/Haas/Lanigan where my teammate was Graham, and that also started a great chemistry between us that translated to results on track.” Servia will participate in the IndyCar Series open test at Barber in two weeks. “There are enough synergies within the team that make me feel positive, that even if we may be starting a little late, we will hit the road running,” he said. Lemieux (25-1) was safely ahead on all three judges cards when he was knocked down. He got up, but his trainer and manager Russ Anber threw in the towel to stop the fight. The 30-year-old Rubio (50-5-1) became mandatory challenger for the WBC belt. It was a battle of power punchers, who between them combined to win 67 of 74 bouts by knockout. This week, Lemieuxs promoter Yvon Michel said this week a loss would not be the end of the 22-year-oldds career.dddddddddddd “Maybe Lemieux will be that type of fighter that one day will lose but youll want to see him come back because of his style and his personality,” Michel said. In the co-feature, super-middle-weight Adonis Stevenson (14-1) of Montreal knocked out American Derek Edwards (25-2) in the third round to win the minor NABA title. Montreals Didier Bence, a former national amateur champion, didnt take long in his pro debut as he took down American Leonard Coller (1-7) in the first round. LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland - Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway retook the lead in the overall World Cup standings Wednesday by placing fifth in a downhill won by Olympic champion Matthias Mayer of Austria. Svindal earned 45 points to move 41 ahead of two-time defending overall champion Marcel Hirscher of Austria, who skips downhills. “If I had to put money on someone I have no idea who it would be,” said Svindal, who will race against Hirscher in a super-G on Thursday. Mayer earned his first career World Cup win in one minute, 29.99 seconds, 0.11 faster than Christof Innerhofer of Italy and American Ted Ligety, who tied for second. Svindal was 0.20 seconds behind Mayer. Mayer and Innerhofer finished 1-2 in the downhill at the Sochi Olympics. “Its very important,” Mayer said of his win. “It was a target for me to win a World Cup race this year. Its perfect.” Manuel Osborne-Paradis of North Vancouver, B.C., was 13th while Erik Guay of Mont-Tremblant was 19th but finished the season a career-best third in the overall standings despite persistent knee issues. “Theres no question it was a successful year in downhill,” Guay said. "With no skiing throughout the summer and having those knee difficulties in January, there have been a lot of ups and downs. To finish third overall is great. “I feel like I could have been competitive for the Crystal Globe if Id been healthy. Its a little bit of a bummer to finish on this note but finishing third overall gives me (hope) for next year.” Osborne-Paradis was ranked 18th in downhill while Calgarys Jan Hudec, who sat out Wednesdays race due to a back injury, was 24th. On Thursday, Guay and Osborne-Paradis will conclude their World Cup seasons in the super-G. Osborne-Paradis will return to Canada to defend his national downhill title in Whistler, B.C., later this month, Guay, though, will head home to Quebec, where his wife, Karen, is expecting their third child. “The super-G is going to feel fast, it will be interesting,” Osborne-Paradis said. "Im going to ski hard and hope for the best. “Ive got nothing to lose so Im going to push my line and take what Ive learned from today. Ill see what I can get away with.” Ligetys career-best result in downhill lifted him to third in the overall standings. His previous best in downhill was fourth, in 2007 at Lenzerheide where the steep, twisting course suits his technical skills. “This is a hill I know I have a good chance on,” said Ligety, the world champion in super-G. “I also dont count on this carrying through to other races on the World Cup downhill tour.” Svindal, a two-time overall champion, already clinched his second straight season-long downhill title before the World Cup Finals. “I used to be 1-2-3 every race, and now Im 4-5-6,” said the Norwegian, who has finished just off the podium since the Olympics. “But Marcel is too.” Manuel Osborne-Paradis of North Vancouver, B.C., was 13th and Erik Guay of Mont-Tremblant, Que., was last among the 19 skiers who finished the race. Svindal is scheduled to start the giant slalom on Saturday, but skip Sundays season-ending slalom which is typically Hirschers best event. American Bode Miller seemed poised for victory Wednesday until going wide near the end of his run. He placed eighth, 0.62 behind Mayer. Several racers found trouble on the hard, bumpy snow despite the clear, sunny conditions. The Bruins play their system and play it well no matter where they play. Patrice Bergeron scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and also tallied in the shootout to help Boston to a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. The Bruins have won nine straight road games, a single-season club record. “Just being smart, playing the system and not forcing plays,” Bergeron said. “Every time we take whats there, we have success.” Reilly Smith, the fifth Boston shooter, clinched the victory in the shootout for the Bruins, who ended March 15-1-1. “Thats pretty impressive,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said. “Theyve stayed focused, theyve stayed humble, theyve stayed determined. Im very proud of the way weve handled this month.” Vincent Lecavalier scored twice for the Flyers, including the game-tying goal with 25 seconds left in regulation. Lecavaliers first goal was the 400th of his career. “Ive always wanted to have a long career, but you dont come into the league saying, I want a certain amount of goals,” Lecavalier said. “You come into the league saying, I want to win the Stanley Cup. I never even thought about 400. Now that it was today I was proud of it, but as a hockey player your goal is to win a Stanley Cup.” Kimmo Timonen also scored for Philadelphia, which has lost three of four to remain in third place in the Metropolitan Division. “I thought our team competed real hard,” Flyers coach Craig Berube said. “They had an attitude today that they were going to show them something and I think they did. I know the outcome wasnt what we wanted, but we attacked and put a lot of pucks at the net.” Andrej Meszaros and Zdeno Chara also scored, and Tuukka Rask made a career-high 49 saves for the Bruins. “They play their system to a T no matter what,” Berube said. “They dont vary from it. Theyre a very competitive, heavy team.” Bergeron scored to give Boston a 1-0 lead in the shootout and Claude Giroux, Philadelphias second shooter, tied it. But no other Flyers shooter scored. The Bruins last road setback came in overtime Feb. 26 at Buffalo, and they havent lost on the road in regulation since a Jan. 9 defeat at Los Angeles.dddddddddddd Lecavalier scored his second goal with 25 seconds left. With goalie Steve Mason on the bench, Philadelphia pressed into the Boston zone. Johnny Boychuk had a chance to clear the zone, but the puck bounced over his stick on a backhand clearing attempt and went right to Jakub Voracek. Rask contested Voracek, who passed in front to a wide-open Lecavalier. It looked as if Boston had it won in regulation. Boston erased a one-goal deficit with a pair of second-period goals. Chara scored on the power play 5:44 into the period. Jarome Iginla set Chara up for the goal with a pass in front of the net, and Chara wheeled to his backhand and lifted it past Mason to the far side of the net. Bergeron continued his torrid pace with a goal in his seventh straight game, this one with 8:55 left in the period to give the Bruins a 3-2 advantage. Bergeron whirled around from the left circle and his turnaround shot slipped under Masons pads. The Flyers led 2-1 after an action-packed first period. Lecavalier opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game by beating Rask with a slap shot from the point that dipped under Rasks glove. Meszaros, who the Flyers traded to the Bruins at the trade deadline for a conditional third-round pick, tied it just over five minutes later when his wrist shot from the slot got past Mason on the stick side after Philadelphia had trouble clearing the zone. Philadelphias Zac Rinaldo raised the excitement level with a hard check on Iginla with just over four minutes left in the period and the players subsequently were penalized for fighting in a one-sided affair in favour of Rinaldo.
