Fr NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — Brooke Henderson won a Canadian Womens Tour event Wednesday, three days after the 16-year-old star tied for 10th in the U.S. Womens Open. Henderson, from Smiths Falls, had a bogey-free 6-under 66 on the Legends on the Niagara Battlefield Course to finish at 9-under 135 — five strokes ahead of Stephanie Connelly. With the victory, Henderson earned a spot in the Canadian Womens Open in August at London Hunt. She also won a Canadian Womens Tour event in Quebec in 2012 at age 14. The United States-born Fiva, who was eliminated in the first round at the Sochi Olympics, won the final ahead of Tomas Kraus of the Czech Republic, Didrik Bastian Juell of Norway and Christopher Del Bosco of Montreal. Wedge will manage the final three games of this season against Oakland before the Mariners begin a search for a new manager. “Its got to the point where its painfully obvious to me that I just wasnt going to be able to move forward with this organization,” Wedge said before Fridays game.Spains 5-1 humiliation at the hands of the Netherlands on Friday came as a shock to everyone who follows the beautiful game. It also served as a reminder that at the highest level of the game, the margin for error is incredibly small. Up 1-0 in the first half after Xabi Alonso had converted a dubious penalty kick, Spain had a glorious chance to double their lead in the 43rd minute. An exquisite reverse pass from Andres Iniesta (pictured below) sent David Silva in alone on the Dutch goal. Unfortunately, Silvas finish wasnt up to the same standard as Iniestas pass. (CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGE) Just one minute later, the Netherlands equalized through a spectacular Robin van Persie diving header. With no apparent danger coming from the Netherlands, Spain set up in a very narrow defensive shape. (Spains opponents will do well to take note – exploiting this is a key to success against the reigning World Cup champs.) Yet just two passes later, the ball was in the back of the Spanish goal. The first pass came from Bruno Martins Indi to Daley Blind, who took up a wide position on the left flank. It was a free pass, with no Spanish player in a position to put pressure on Blinds first touch. (CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGE) Once Blind received the ball, Spains back four was vulnerable to the diagonal ball over the top to van Persie – because Sergio Ramos, the left central defender, fell asleep and got caught ball-watching. (CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGE) With no pressure on the ball, Blind was able to spot that van Persie managed to get a step in front of his marker, Ramos. (CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGE) The ball from Blind was exquisite, and it was matched only by the finish from van Persie – a diving, looping header over Iker Casillas in Spains goal. (CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGE) So what could Spain have done differently? In this situation, when the ball went wide to Blind, Gerard Pique was tight with Arjen Robben, the first striker – as he should be.dddddddddddd His defensive partner, Ramos, needed to be in a deeper covering position, so that he could support Pique while also nullifying the threat of the ball in behind to van Persie. (CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGE) It is only a matter of Ramos being 3-4 yards deeper, but at the World Cup, that is sometimes all that is needed to create scoring opportunities. Had Spains back-four been properly aligned (highlighted in yellow, above), Blind would never had played the ball forward for van Persie to run onto because Ramos would have been in a position to head the pass away. This goal, scored right before the half-time break, was a real blow to Spains confidence. From nearly doubling their lead a minute earlier, to conceding a wonder goal to the Dutch, the momentum turned in favour of the Netherlands going into the second half. The Spanish collapse after the break – where they conceded four unanswered goals – should have been prevented, though. The second goal was down to a combination of wonderful skill from Robben and slack marking from Pique and Ramos; the third and fourth goals down to mistakes from Casillas, with the fifth goal a classic counter-attacking move from the Dutch. It would be naïve to presume that this result – as shocking as it was – is an indication that Spains style of play is now ineffective. La Roja still possess a squad full of some of the worlds most talented players, and they will continue to employ their tiki-taka possession game to great effect. Players like Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta and Silva are still a joy to watch, and they will go into their next game with Chile knowing they must win, as a loss will effectively end their tournament. What it does prove, though, is that even the best are fallible on an off day. Téma: Jak postupovat / the first time they o LOS ANGELES — If Donald Sterling is compelled to sell the Los Angeles Clippers, the list of potential buyers has more stars than their roster. Oprah Winfrey is contemplating a bid. Sean Combs is a Knicks fan, but he wants in. Floyd Mayweather Jr. wants the whole team. Matt Damon wants a tiny piece. Billionaires, entertainers and athletes alike announced their intentions to pursue the Clippers with varying degrees of seriousness Wednesday, proving the longtime losers will be quite a prize if the NBA is able to wrest control of the team away from Sterling after his lifetime ban for racist remarks. Winfrey led the list, and the media mogul is already bringing in her friends. “Oprah Winfrey is in discussions with David Geffen and Larry Ellison to make a bid for the Los Angeles Clippers should the team become available,” spokesperson Nicole Nichols confirmed in an email. If Winfrey joins Geffen, the billionaire entertainment executive, and Oracle CEO Ellison to pool their vast resources for a bid, they could be among the top contenders for a franchise that would be among the most valuable sports properties to hit the market since the Los Angeles Dodgers $2 billion sale in 2012 to the Guggenheim Partners group fronted by Magic Johnson, the Lakers great and another potential Clippers bidder. The Clippers spent the last three decades rotting in the shadow of the glamorous Lakers, who piled up championships while the lowly Clips only racked up losses. With Sterlings ouster, the Clippers suddenly became the most attractive team in town to wealthy fans lining up for an unlikely chance to seize control of a Hollywood sports franchise on the move. David Carter, the executive director of USCs Sports Business Institute, identifies multiple factors contributing to the Clippers extraordinary value. “Interest in the team results from the combination of NBA teams being rare assets that are seldom available for purchase, the location of this particular team, and potential owners belief that revenue streams linked to rehabbing the brand and participating in future revenue linked to a new TV deal all make the team very attractive to prospective buyers,” Carter said. For a day, almost everybody seemed interested in being those buyers — and even entertainers without those limitless resources were clamouring for the chance. Combs, Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg all aired their interest, as did longtime Clippers fan Frankie Muniz and Damon, who told CNBC hed like to be a “super tiny minority investor.” Fans also got in on the frenzy, opening campaigns on Kickstarter and Crowdtilt to pool their resources for the club. Mayweather spoke seriously about his interest while preparing for his fight with Marcos Maidana this Saturday, although Money May would have to curb his enthusiastic sports gambling habit. Oscar De La Hoya, the majority shareholder in Golden Boy Promotions whose statue sits outside Staples Center, volunteered himself as a part-owner. “The league has made it known that it wants more minorities involved, and as a proud Mexican-American, I will bring a different perspective to the NBA in general, and the Clippers in particular,” De La Hoya said. “I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I know what it takes to run a successful sports entity.” A vocal segment of the NBAs social media following immediately started a campaign to move the Clippers to Seattle, a basketball-loving city that has been without a team since Clay Bennett moved the SuperSonics to Oklahoma City in 2008. But much of the Clippers value results from their location in the nations second-largest city and their opportunity to sign a lucrative new television rights deal in 2016. The Clippers association with Sterlings racist remarks could have been crushing to their prestige and value, but they dont seem to be a problem if Sterling is no longer associated with the club. “The short term damage has been dramatic, but Commissioner (Adam) Silver provided a tourniquet that has stopped the brand erosion,” Carter said. “The NBA, working in conjunction with new ownership, will have an extraordinary opportunity to rehabilitate the teams reputation, and then extend its brand.” The Clippers havent been known for success during most of their existence, but thats changing. And whats more, the Clippers are cool. Led by point guard Chris Paul and high-flying forward Blake Griffin — two All-Stars signed to long-term contracts — the Clippers have won two straight Pacific Division titles and are on the brink of their third playoff series victory since Sterling bought the team in 1981. The Clippers have captured the imagination of Los Angeles counterculture, the transplants and contrarian fans who arent interested in the Lakers bandwagon. Theyre also attracting more of an international following with each highlight-reel performance by Paul and dunking virtuosos DeAndre Jordan and Griffin, who coined the phrase “Lob City” to describe their daredevil style of play. And it doesnt hurt that the Lakers just finished their worst season in more than 50 years, missing the playoffs for just the third time in 38 seasons. The Lakers appear to be years away from title contention, while the Clippers are built to contend every year in the near future. “Were proud of this team,” Clippers guard Jamal Crawford said. “Were proud of our city, and we want to make them proud of us.” cheap jerseys from china . Nick DeLeon scored in the 36th minute for United (3-23-6), which had ample opportunities to build on its lead but went its 10th straight match without a victory.(SportsNetwork.com) – The Toronto Raptors hit the road for the first time this season, heading to Atlanta to take on the Hawks. The Raptors opened their 2013-14 campaign with a 93-87 home win over Atlantic Division rivals, the Boston Celtics. It was a nice all-around effort for Toronto. Rudy Gay led the way with 19 points, followed by 13 apiece from Amir Johnson and DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry chipped in with 11. Jonas Valanciunas, a preseason choice for Most Improved Player, only scored eight points, but pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked two shots. Tyler Hansbrough, who signed with the Raptors in the offseason, blocked three shots and grabbed 12 boards as the Raptors slaughtered the Celtics by 15 on the glass. The Raptors clobbered Boston 28-11 in the second quarter, but the Celtics bounced back with a 34-22 second quarter. The lull left a bad taste in head coach Dwane Caseys mouth. “I thought we grinded it out when it got tough and they made their run,” said Casey. “I like the way our guys bounced back, but we should have never put ourselves in that hole.” The Hawks meanwhile are looking to get their first victory of the season in their home opener. They fell to the Dallaas Mavericks, 118-109, in Dallas on Wednesday.dddddddddddd It marked the first time they opened a season without Josh Smith since the 2003-04 season. Jeff Teague, who was re-signed in the offseason, had 24 points and missed a double-double by one assist. It wasnt all roses for Teague as he committed six turnovers. Paul Millsap, the prize free agent who will replace Smith, had 20 points in his Atlanta debut. DeMarre Carroll (14) and Al Horford (11) scored in double figures as starters and Cartier Martin, another free-agent newcomer, netted a whopping 17 points in less than 17 minutes of action. The offense worked fine for the Hawks on Wednesday, it was the other side of the ball that was a struggle. The Mavericks scored 118 points, shot 57 percent from the field and 45.8 percent from long range. “We played well at times, but give them credit for playing better longer,” said new Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer. “Weve got to get a lot better. Were not going to be successful if thats the kind of defense (we play).” The Hawks have taken 13 of the last 16 contests between the two squads, although the Raptors bested them the last time the teams met in Atlanta last season. Téma: Jak postupovat / Conference, 12 games b NEWARK, N.J. — Standing on the podium after what might have been his final game of his record-setting, 20-year career with the New Jersey Devils, Martin Brodeurs eyes welled with tears when he was asked to explain his emotions. Just 15 minutes earlier, after a season-ending 3-2 win over Boston on Sunday, the soon-to be 42-year goalie stood at centre ice and gave a stick salute to the crowd as his teammates stood in front of the bench and tapped their sticks to honour him. As he was interviewed the sellout crowd chanted: “Thank You Marty! Thank You Marty!” “It was a little emotional,” said Brodeur, the NHLs career leader in wins (688) and shutouts (124). "I have spent my life here. All the fans out there know me. They think they know me by my name, and I feel they know me. “They have been calling my name for 20 years. Every time they stop me and talk to me, they are great. Its a relationship that an athlete has with people. It was definitely fun, but it was emotional.” Brodeur is in the final year of his contract and is likely to test the free-agent market now that he has become the backup to Cory Schneider. He clearly indicated he wants more playing time after going 19-14-6 in 39 games. It is clear that the 28-year-old Schneider is the Devils goalie of the future. “Its not out of the question that the Devils will be in the running for me to come back,” Brodeur said. "I havent talked to Lou (Lamoriello) about what he wants to do with backing up “Schneids,” Brodeur said. "Again, if I am mentally ready to do that job, I am going to look for the Devils a little bit. “Right now Im keeping everything open. Well see what he feels is the best for the organization. Its not about me anymore. Im free. Hes not stuck with me anymore.” Brodeur made 16 saves against the Bruins, who rested many of their stars in preparation for the playoffs. Loui Eriksson and Brad Marchand scored for Boston. Travis Zajac, who put the Devils ahead 2-1 early in the third period, said the Devils goal was to send Brodeur out a winner. “It just seemed like the right ending for everything he has done for this organization,” Zajac said after the Devils missed the playoffs for the second straight season after making the finals in 2012. “Whatever happens, it just seemed right to get him that win.” Defenceman Marek Zidlicky scored twice for New Jersey and Jaromir Jagr earned two assists, giving him 1,050 and moving him past Gordie Howe for eighth on the NHL career list. “He did something that no one is ever going to do again,” Jagr said of Brodeur. “I would say its comparable to Wayne Gretzkys numbers.” Boston rested eight starters, including Zdeno Chara and No. 1 goalie Tuukka Rask. “We had a real tough opponent, and for the most part I thought we handled it OK,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said. “For us it was just about playing a solid game.” While Brodeur didnt have a lot of work against the Boston lineup that included four players called up from the clubs Providence AHL affiliate, this was a love fest for the player who led the Devils to three Stanley Cup titles and five appearances in the championship round. He was cheered from the opening introductions, and every save brought chants of “Marty! Marty!” Toward the end, the crowd just chanted his name. Zajac broke a 1-all tie at 3:52 of the final period. He got inside position on Matt Bartkowski in front of goalie Chad Johnson and redirected a pass from Jagr into the net. Zidlicky stretched the lead to two with a power-play goal that Jagr also helped set up. Boston managed to take some of the enjoyment out of the closing seconds when Marchand scored a power-play goal to make it a one-goal game. “If this is his last game, it is (cool) to have scored,” Marchand said. “I should have (grabbed) the puck.” The Devils outshot the undermanned Bruins 24-9 in the first two periods, but the score was tied 1-1. Zidlicky gave New Jersey the lead 7:12 into the game. The defenceman joined a rush late and took a pass from Zajac entering the Bruins zone. He skated down the right side, went around the net and beat Johnson with a wraparound inside the post for his 11th goal. Boston only had five shots in the period but the last one tied it on a power play. Marchand sent a pass from the right circle to Carl Soderberg in the opposite circle. He quickly found Eriksson with a pass at the right corner of the net for a slam dunk. The Devils announced during the game that coach Pete DeBoer will return next season. NOTES: Marchand played in his 300th game with the Bruins. … The Bruins, the Presidents Trophy winner for the best regular-season record also rested Jarome Iginla, Patrice Bergeron, Milan Lucic, David Krejci, Daniel Paille and Chris Kelly. They recalled forwards Craig Cunningham, Justin Florek, Alexander Khokhlachev, and Matt Lindblad from Providence. Germany, which beat Argentina 1-0 on Sunday to win a fourth World Cup, replaced deposed champion Spain in first place. Argentina jumped three places into second in the rankings, while the Netherlands soared 12 spots into third after beating host Brazil to clinch third place. Reaching the quarter-finals took Colombia to fourth and Belgium to fifth in FIFAs monthly rankings, which take into account all 64 World Cup matches. Spains title defence surprisingly ended in the group stage, and the team has dropped to eighth place. First-round exits also led to Portugal going down seven places to 11th, Italy dropping five to 14th and England plummeting 10 spots to 20th. Canada fell eight spots to No. 118, one spot below the Central African Republic and just above Lebanon. The United States fell two places to 15th despite reaching the round of 16 where they lost to Belgium. The Americans were overtaken by the Dutch, Chile and France. Then he cooled off by sticking the right ankle that had been bothering him in a bucket of ice. The Charlotte Bobcats are picking things up quickly with Jefferson in the middle again after the injury that had forced him out of the lineup. Jefferson scored 19 points, Gerald Henderson added 17 and the Bobcats handed the Milwaukee Bucks their eighth straight loss in a 96-72 win Saturday night. Jefferson, in his second game back from an ankle injury, added seven rebounds for Charlotte, which has won two of three to pull back to .500 (7-7). “My first game back, I was a little rusty,” Jefferson said while icing down the ankle. The Bobcats lost to Phoenix 98-91 on Friday night, when Jefferson finished with nine points in his first action after missing four games. “But it never fails the second game. It like clicked,” Jefferson said while snapping his fingers. “And thats what we did better than last night.” Reserve Khris Middleton (20 points) led the Bucks, who shot just 35 per cent. Milwaukees losing streak is its longest since closing out the 2007-8 season with eight consecutive losses. Coach Larry Drew was optimistic before the game that his team would bounce back from a 115-107 loss in overtime to Philadelphia on Friday night. Instead, the Bucks struggled again. At 2-10, theyre the worst team in the Eastern Conference. “I owe the fans a big, big apology for the performance of this team tonight. Very, very disappointed,” Drew said. “A team that I really thought after last nights loss would come out and play with some energy, with some passion and they did not do that.” Middleton outscored the Bucks starting five of Caron Butler, Ersan Ilyasova, Zaza Pachulia, O.J. Mayo and Luke Ridnour, who combined for 16 points on 8-of-28 shooting. Charlotte led the entire way, building on a 46-39 halftime lead. A smattering of boos came down for the Bucks with Charlotte up 23 after three quarters. “I told the guys after the game that there will be changes in our starting lineup,” Drew said. “If theyre not on the same page with it, so be it, but there will be changes.” The Bobcats outmmuscled the Bucks to pull away.dddddddddddd Jeff Adrien added 10 rebounds off the bench for Charlotte, which had decisive edges on the boards (52-36) and points in the paint (48-28). Charlotte was briefly threatened in the second quarter, when the Bucks narrowed an early 12-point edge to 36-35. But Milwaukee had a 2-of-18 shooting stretch from late in the second quarter to late in the third. “The biggest thing was energy,” Henderson said about the defensive effort. “Were coming off a tough loss at home. Then you come off a back-to-back. Milwaukee. Its cold. Youve just got to come with energy on the road.” The Bucks, struggling with injuries, are slowly getting healthy. An injury list that once numbered about a half-dozen players was down to just two on Saturday night in Larry Sanders (thumb) and Carlos Delfino (foot). Point guard Brandon Knight returned to the floor after missing time with a hamstring injury. It still wasnt enough for the Bucks, who looked disjointed on the offensive end. Charlotte capitalized coming out of the half. Josh McRoberts (12 points, nine rebounds) hit a 3 from the wing with the shot clock winding down, leaving Ilyasova to hang his head in frustration as he jogged back up the floor. Mayo missed a quick jumper and the Bobcats came racing down in transition after a rebound by McRoberts. Jefferson drove the lane and got fouled, but missed the second of two foul shots. Then the 6-foot-10, 289-pound Jefferson showed exactly why Charlotte signed him to a three-year, $41 million contract in the off-season, grabbing the offensive board and getting fouled again. This time, Jefferson made both foul shots for an 11-point lead with 11:12 left in the third quarter. “Theres not many guys that can play him effectively,” coach Steve Clifford said. “Hes an elite low-post scorer down there.” John Henson had 10 points and nine boards for Milwaukee. Notes: Knight missed five games because of the injury. He had three points and seven assists in 25 minutes. Ridnour started at the point. … The No. 2 Duke womens basketball team watched from the stands, ahead of the Blue Devils game Sunday against Marquette. Duke post player Amber Henson is Hensons sister. Téma: Jak postupovat / of the best in basebal PHOENIX — Finally, the Arizona Diamondbacks won a series at home. Cody Ross hit his first home run of the year, Eric Chavez went deep for the second consecutive day and the Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 on Sunday for their first series win at Chase Field all season. After setting a team record for runs Saturday night in an 18-5 rout, the Diamondbacks broke a 3-all tie with Chavezs two-run shot off Dan Haren (5-2) in the fifth inning. “We kind of went in there with a little momentum,” manager Kirk Gibson said. “Last nights game was good for us. The thing about last nights game is, unless you play good (today), it doesnt really mean anything.” Ross, batting .163 entering the game after coming back from major hip surgery, also doubled for Arizona, which has won two straight over the Dodgers after losing eight of the first nine meetings this season. “I felt something in BP the other day where I was, All right, I can start driving the ball,” Ross said. Chris Owings singled three times and stole two bases for the Diamondbacks. The rookie is 9 for 11 against Haren. Hanley Ramirez and Adrian Gonzalez homered for the Dodgers, who have lost three of four. “Obviously, you dont want to keep losing series. If you lose series you are not going to go anywhere,” Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly said. “I am really worried about day to day. Till we can grind out wins, we are in trouble.” Josh Collmenter (2-2) went 5 1-3 innings to get the win. Addison Reed threw a scoreless ninth for his 12th save. Collmenter was lifted after 84 pitches, allowing two runs and four hits. “If you can beat division rivals at home, thats big,” Collmenter said. “Especially the way weve been able to play halfway decent on the road, if we can match that at home I think we can get our record where we want it to be.” Haren gave up five runs, a season-high four earned, and 10 hits in six innings. “The last three games have been a struggle for me,” he said. “Prior to that I was fine. I have to look and see what I was doing earlier in the year.” Owings led off the fifth with a single. With two outs and a 3-2 count, Chavez — who entered in the fourth after Martin Prado left with blurred vision in his left eye — hit an opposite-field homer to left. That gave Chavez home runs in consecutive at-bats. He also had a pinch-hit shot Saturday. After first baseman Paul Goldschmidt dropped a relay throw for what would have been an inning-ending double play, the Dodgers loaded the bases with two outs against Brad Ziegler in the eighth. But second baseman Cliff Pennington caught Matt Kemps liner to end the inning. Ramirezs two-out homer in the first gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Arizona tied it with an unearned run in the second. Ross doubled and scored when Ramirez threw wildly to first while trying to turn what would have been an inning-ending double play. In the third, Ramirez walked and Gonzalez homered to give the Dodgers a 3-1 lead. The Diamondbacks cut it to 3-2 when Gerardo Parra led off the bottom half with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Owings single. Téma: Jak postupovat / shot from the point SAN DIEGO — The NCAA tournament has a new darling after one of the most improbable finishes in the NCAA tournaments long bracket-busting history. Got Jacks? Pulling off a comeback for the ages, feisty Stephen F. Austin became the latest No. 12 seed to pull off an upset, tying the game on Desmond Haymons did-that-just-happen four-point play with 3.6 seconds left, and then holding on in overtime for a 77-75 win over Virginia Commonwealth on Friday night. “Well, miracles truly do happen,” SFA coach Brad Underwood said. Pretty regularly these days. Its been a wild ride in the NCAA tournament already, a two-day run filled with upsets, buzzer-beaters and millions of crumpled brackets across the country. SFAs victory marked the fifth overtime game during the round of 64, a tournament record. SFA didnt have the biggest upset of the opening two rounds — Mercer probably gets the nod there with its win over Duke — but the Lumberjacks certainly had the most jaw-dropping finish. Heres how it went down: The South Regions No. 5 seed, VCU (23-10) was firmly in control after its swarming defence flustered SFA during a big second-half run. The scrappy Lumberjacks (32-2) kept hanging around and clawed their way back in the closing seconds. Two missed free throws by VCUs Jordan Burgess with 10 seconds left gave SFA a chance. The Lumberjacks worked the ball around to the wing, where Haymon launched a 3-pointer and was fouled by JeQuan Lewis just before the ball fell through the basket. “I just tried to get out and contest it,” Lewis said. “(I) jumped to the side a little bit and kind of fell into him. The ref called a foul.” Haymon still had some work to do, though. The crowd still buzzing, VCU coach Shaka Smart called a timeout, trying to ice Haymon. The senior didnt seem to mind, returning to the court to calmly knock the free throw down. “I was struggling shooting the ball and I knew to get it going, I was going to have to continue to try to find it (his touch),” Haymon said. “I guess I found that groove with the last shot.” The tension still wasnt over. Following a missed desperation heave at the end of regulation, Haymon put the Jacks ahead in overtime on a 3-pointer with 2 minutes left. VCUs turn at glory came after SFAs Thomas Walkup made 1 of 2 free throws put the Lumberjacks up 2 with 14 seconds left. The Rams got a good look on the final possession, working the ball around to Lewis for an open 3-pointer on the wing. His shot went long, the Lumberjacks grabbed the rebound, then stormed the floor after improbably extending the nations second-longest winning streak to 29 games. Jacob Parker scored 22 points and Haymon had 17 for SFA, which moves into Sundays third-round game against the Tulsa-UCLA winner. Treveon Graham had 19 points, Burgess 14 and Lewis finished with 13 for the disappointed Rams, the third No. 5 seed to lose this tournament. “Honestly, I thought we had it,” Burgess said. “We had them on the ropes, but they came back and made some tough shots and important shots to win the game.” Every year, the NCAA tournament has a feel-good team fans lock onto, like Florida Gulf Coast and Dunk City last year. SFA certainly had qualifications to be this years darling: A fun-loving group of players led by a long-haired shooter they call Sunshine, a frenetic style — at least when it comes to half-court defence — and the nations second-longest winning streak at 29. But for Lumberjacks to become the latest lovable lower seed, they had to get past VCU, a team that had been-there, done-that with the whole underdog thing. The Rams had a magical run of their own, reaching the 2011 Final Four, and have been consistent winners since, reaching the NCAA tournament four straight years. Oh, yeah, VCU has that defence, too. Its called Havoc and it has created more turnovers and steals than any other team in the country the past two seasons. SFA plays a little D of its own — more of the half-court variety than the Rams — so naturally tipped passes, floor burns and scraps for loose balls filled the arena when they met on the court for the first time. The Lumberjacks picked their way through the havoc with pinpoint passing on backdoor cuts and the interior, taking a six-point lead into halftime on Parkers last-second 3-pointer. VCU made the game more chaotic — Havotic? — with its pressure to start the second half and started working the ball inside, racing through an 11-0 run to go up 52-43. The Rams stayed in control most of the half, but missed four free throws in the final 32 seconds to give the Lumberjacks a shot at victory. “I like the way we battled the majority of the second half, but we just didnt finish the game,” Smart said. “We kind of gave them a glimmer of hope.” The Jacks ran with it, earning their spot in NCAA tournament history with one improbable shot. NEWARK, N.J. — Devils coach Pete DeBoer has been looking for one of his goalies to get hot and take over the majority of the playing time. Marty Brodeur gave DeBoer a clear answer Saturday night with one of his best games of the season. Dainius Zubrus scored two goals in the third period and Brodeur made 33 saves, leading the New Jersey Devils past the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-0. “Its exactly what we needed at the right time,” DeBoer said of Brodeur. “That game (Friday, 3-2 loss to the Penguins) night took a lot out of us and I knew the difference was going to be the goaltending.” Brodeur earned his third shutout of the season and 124th of his career. “I know for me, its always been hard not to be there all the time,” Brodeur said. “Its the way it is when you have two guys who can play. It always makes decisions difficult.” Jaromir Jagr assisted on both goals to raise his assist total to 1,024. Damien Brunners seventh goal had broken the scoreless tie in the second period. “It was a really nice pass and it doesnt happen a lot these days,” Brunner said. “I was able to generate some speed and Geli (Eric Gelinas) made a great pass.” Jagr skated behind the net and passed to Zubrus on doorstep of the crease for the goal at 6:44 of the period. Then, at 9:36, Jagr put a backhand shot on goal and Zubrus was there to knock in the rebound for his seventh goal and a 3-0 advantage. Brodeur came up with two of his best saves in the third to thwart the Lightning. First, he turned away a breakaway chance with a pad save on Nikita Kucherovs shot. Then he smothered a point-blank shot by J.T. Brown. “I have no clue,” when asked how he made the save on Kucherov.dddddddddddd “I didnt feel it and didnt know what it was. I got lucky.” Brunner scored at the 15:37 mark. Rookie defenceman Eric Gelinas made a pass up the middle to Brunners stick, just before the blue line. Brunner got between two defenders for a break on goal, deked to his left and then pushed a forehand past Lightning goalie Anders Lindback. Mark Fayne was credited with an assist. The Lightning put pressure on Brodeur in the second period, outshooting the Devils 14-5. Before Brunners goal, Brodeur had Martin St. Louis muttering to himself in the second period after the Devils goalie foiled a scoring chance by the Lightnings star. St. Louis received a pass in front and wristed a high shot from the point that Brodeur managed to grab out of the air with his glove. “Marty was Marty tonight, for sure,” St. Louis said. “I didnt get a lot of wood on it and I was frustrated. It was a good save. We were surging and had chances, but they got the second goal, that made it tough.” In the first minute of the third period, Brunner was denied a second goal when Lindback came up with a big save on a shot from the right circle. NOTES: The Devils were 3 for 3 in penalty kills vs. the Lighting, giving them the best penalty kill percentage in the NHL .933 (42 of 45). … Tampa Bay star Steve Stamkos joined his teammates for the morning skate at the Prudential Center on Saturday, 33 days after breaking his leg in a collision with a goal post. “My 4-week X-ray looks good. Im just trying to progress,” said Stamkos in a video on the Lightning website. Stamkos had 14 goals and 23 points in 17 games before the Nov. 11 injury sustained in Boston. Téma: Jak postupovat / a possibility," Ighal OAKLAND, Calif. — Pinch-runner Rajai Daviss decision to steal third base just as Oakland catcher Derek Norris was throwing the ball back to the pitcher caught most everyone by surprise — including several of his Detroit teammates. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus just hopes its the spark to pull his slumping team out of its two-week funk. Davis scored on Austin Jacksons fielders choice groundout in the eighth inning and the Tigers beat the Athletics 6-5 on Tuesday night to end a three-game losing streak. “Raj was just being Raj,” Ausmus said. “He likes to wreak havoc on the bases, he saw the pitchers head drop and he took advantage.” A day after getting shut out in this ALDS rematch from a year ago, the Tigers jumped out to an early lead, lost it, then rallied to win for just the second time in nine games. That helped overcome another rough outing by reigning AL Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, who gave up five runs and eight hits in six innings but was long gone by the time Davis scored the game-winning run. J.D. Martinez drew a one-out walk off Oakland reliever Fernando Abad (0-2). Davis was brought in to run and the speedy outfielder took second on a passed ball. He then stole third when As catcher Derek Norris was throwing the ball back to Abad. After Luke Gregerson replaced Abad, Jackson hit a sharp grounder to shortstop Jed Lowrie, but the As were unable to turn the double play and Davis raced home with the go-ahead run. “I think he caught the whole stadium sleeping,” Tigers closer Joe Nathan said. “I know I missed it.” As manager Bob Melvin credited Davis for his aggressive running. “That was the difference,” Melvin said. “He timed it perfectly. As soon as (Norris) let go of the ball he took off. I havent seen the replay yet if he had a chance to get it and throw him out, but thats a big chance he took and it paid off.” Miguel Cabrera and Torii Hunter homered for the Al Central-leading Tigers. Al Albuquerque (2-1) pitched one inning for the win and Nathan worked the ninth for his 12th save in 15 tries. John Jaso homered for the As. The game began as a marquee matchup between Scherzer and Sonny Gray, but both starters were gone after the sixth. Scherzer, who beat the As in Game 1 of the ALDS last season, struck out four, walked two and balked home a run. Grey, who led the AL in ERA entering the night, wasnt much better. He pitched with runners on base in nearly every inning, allowed four runs for the first time this season and struck out five before leaving with a one-run lead after the sixth. The As bullpen couldnt make it stand. Reliever Dan Otero gave up Hunters tying home run with two outs in the seventh before the Tigers scored off Abad in the eighth. It was a much-needed boost for the slumping Tigers, who had dropped seven of eight before coming from behind to beat the As. “We certainly needed it for sure,” Ausmus said. “The mood has been good all along … (but) you could tell in the dugout that the players really wanted this one.” Detroit, which was shut out in the series opener, got to Gray when Hunter doubled with one out in the first and scored on Cabreras single up the middle. After Gray walked Victor Martinez on four pitches, J.D. Martinez lined an RBI double to right-centre to make it 2-0. Oakland tied it in the second on RBI doubles by Lowrie and Alberto Callaspo before Cabrera hit his tiebreaking home run in the third and Alex Avila doubled in Jackson in the fourth to make it 4-2. Coming off his worst start of the season, Scherzer couldnt make it hold up. He balked home a run in the fourth after giving up singles to Josh Reddick and Callaspo. Jaso followed with his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot that gave Oakland a 5-4 lead. Odion Ighalo turned to flick a weak shot beyond goalkeeper Claudio Bravo for the 93rd-minute equalizer that moved the Andalucians three points above the drop zone. “Staying up is still a possibility,” Ighalo told Spanish broadcaster Cuatro after scoring from what TV replays showed could have been an offside position. “Were going to fight right until the end.” Granada was reduced to 10-men in the 54th when Recio was shown a second yellow card for protesting, just three minutes before Sociedad defender Mikel Gonzalez also exited after his hard challengge earned a straight red card.dddddddddddd Sociedad had gone ahead in the 77th when Carlos Vela squeezed a cross inside the near post, but Ighalos late dramatics meant the Basque club must wait another round before its place in next seasons Europa League is secured. Téma: Jak postupovat / least the Spurs di BUFFALO, N.Y. – New York Islanders coach Jack Capuano had no choice but to have faith in younger players after star forward John Tavares was lost to a season-ending knee injury. Brock Nelson and fellow rookies delivered down the stretch and provided a glimpse at a brighter future for the Islanders, who head into the off-season after missing the playoffs for the sixth time in seven years. Nelson scored with 3:44 remaining to force overtime, and then netted the lone shootout goal in a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night in a season-ending matchup of non-playoff teams. The Islanders (34-37-11) won by rallying from a 2-0 deficit and closed the season by winning three straight and eight of 12 (8-2-2). “These kids have played extremely hard, and Im proud of what theyve done not only in the last month and a half, but these last three games,” Capuano said. “They really stuck together.” The future looks even better after Capuano reiterated that Tavares is on track in his recovery from a left knee injury and should be ready to begin training in the summer. There is much more work to do in Buffalo. Torrey Mitchell, Jamie McBain and Matt Ellis scored for the Sabres (21-51-10), who had already clinched the NHLs worst record. The Sabres went 0-6-1 in their final seven games. With 150 goals scored, Buffalo set the NHL-low in the leagues post-expansion era that began in 1967. The previous low was 151 by Tampa Bay in 1997-98. “The standard has to be set a little bit higher than it was,” Sabres coach Ted Nolan said. “Well address that starting with the meetings (Monday).” Nelson, an Islanders first-round pick in the 2010 draft, was eager to show what potential the teams youngsters possess. “We knew we had a young group and a lot of rookies,” said Nelson, who topped the Islanders rookie class with 14 goals and 26 points. “We wanted to go out there and give it everything we had every night. I think we were able to do that.” Nelson scored the lone shootout goal on the Islanders second shot. He snapped a shot that rookie Connor Knapp got a piece of with his stick. But there was enough backspin for the puck to dribble in. Anders Nilsson stopped 36 shots through overtime and all three he faced in the shootout. Nilsson clinched the victory by using his glove to sweep away a puck that got away from Ville Leino as he drove to the net. Anders Lee, a recent call up, scored twice in a game the Islanders never led until the final score. The Sabres bookended their season with long droughts. Buffalo got off to a 2-13-1 start, and ended with a 2-16-2 skid. “This is our job and we failed. So its definitely salt in the wound,” forward Marcus Foligno said. “I guess when it rains it pours, and you really just got to keep putting your head down and moving forward.” Though both teams rosters were depleted by injuries, the Islanders fill-ins proved to be better. Down 2-0, Lee scored both his goals in a span of 3:40, bridging the second intermission, to tie it 17 seconds into the third period. Mitchell put the Sabres ahead by deflecting in Rasmus Ristolainens shot 10:09 into the third, before Nelson scored the equalizer. Using Ristolainen as a screen, Nelson snapped in 40-foot shot over Knapps left shoulder. The only thing on the line for the Islanders was where they would finish in the overall standings. The win pushed them into 26th place, two points ahead of Calgary. There is a Sabres tie-in for the Islanders connected to a trade in which Buffalo sent Thomas Vanek to New York for Matt Moulson and a first-round draft pick in one of the next two drafts. The Islanders have until June 1 to determine whether to give up their selection this year or hold off. NOTES: The Sabres 21 wins are the fewest in an 80-plus-game season, and rank second fewest behind Buffalos 16-43-19 finish in 1971-72. Buffalo matched the 21 wins it had in the lockout-shortened season last year. Their 51 regulation losses are the most ever. … The Islanders went 21-18-2 on the road for their best finish since going 21-15-3-2 in 2001-02. … The Sabres were forced to call up G Andrey Makarov, D Mark Pysyk and LW Nicolas Deslauriers from AHL Rochester after the team lost five players to injuries at Boston on Saturday. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich sported a casual, no-tie look. An NBA Finals rematch, yes. An NBA Finals replay, it was not. Either way, it still wound up going how the Miami Heat wanted. Chris Bosh scored 24 points on 9 for 10 shooting — making him 17 for his last 18 from the floor — and LeBron James added 18 points as the Heat rolled past the San Antonio Spurs 113-101 on Sunday, never trailing and leading by as many as 29 points along the way. “Did that feel like The Finals? No, it did not feel like The Finals,” is how Heat coach Erik Spoelstra opened his postgame remarks, without anyone even asking the question. Mario Chalmers scored 16 points for Miami, which used Wade as a reserve for the first time since Jan. 6, 2008. Wade — an All-Star starter again this season — had not played in any of Miamis most recent four games while dealing with ongoing knee rehabilitation, and finished with eight points and five assists in 24 minutes. Wade said not starting was his idea, and seemed generally pleased with his first game in nine days. “Ive only had one practice in a while,” Wade said. “Team was in a good groove. I wanted to work my way into my rhythm.” Michael Beasley scored 12, Norris Cole scored 11 and Ray Allen added 10 for Miami (32-12). Spoelstra said afterward that nothing is set in stone about Wades status going forward. “It was just good to have him out there,” Spoelstra said. Tim Duncan led San Antonio with 23 points. Boris Diaw added 15, Marco Belinelli scored 12 and Tony Parker finished with 11 for the Spurs, who were without three players who played key roles in last years Finals. Kawhi Leonard (hand), Danny Green (hand) and Tiago Splitter (shoulder) all remain sidelined for San Antonio (33-11), which lost for just the fourth time in 20 road games. “Everybody has injuries. You have to deal with them during the season,” said Parker, who jammed a finger Sunday but didnt seem concerned.dddddddddddd “Obviously, its hurting us but theyre going to come back. We just have to keep pushing and try to get better.” The game was tied at 44 late in the first half. Before long, it was a runaway. Miami closed the second quarter with a 14-6 spurt, outscored San Antonio 33-21 in the third and opened the fourth on a 13-4 run, just in case there was any remaining doubt, which hardly seems likely. Add it up, and over a 20-minute stretch the two-time defending champs outscored the Spurs 60-31. “They kind of got in a comfort zone,” Duncan said. “Obviously a very good team and very good at what they do, just didnt get them off their game at all.” Sundays game was the first official meeting between the teams since Miami won Game 7 of last seasons Finals. San Antonio visited Miami in the preseason, a night where the title rematch was the only thing really worth talking about, but at least the Spurs didnt have to see Miamis third championship banner hanging from the rafters of AmericanAirlines Arena that night. “Obviously, it brought back memories, for sure,” James said. “But its a regular-season game where both teams were trying to get better.” The third quarter decided just about everything. Bosh was 4 for 4 from the field, on the way to a 12-point quarter. Miami outrebounded San Antonio 14-3 in the period, with James and Cole each grabbing one more rebound than the entire Spurs roster did collectively. “Its a bad combination when were not disciplined enough defensively and theyre making shots,” Popovich said. “They shot it really well — came with their A game.” NOTES: Only two of the teams last eight non-Finals meetings have been decided by less than 12 points. … The Heat have played their last 98:33 without facing a deficit. … Actor John Malkovich was in the sold-out, largely late-arriving crowd for the 1 p.m. start. … Popovich remained tied with Red Auerbach on the all-time NBA coaching wins list, with 938. … The Spurs scored 100 or more points for the 15th straight game. The first openly gay player drafted in the NFL said Friday there have been no issues fitting in with his St. Louis Rams teammates, no awkward moments in the locker room and that he was accepted right away. Working out with the full squad this week, Sam says he realizes he must step up his game to carve out a spot on a loaded defensive line. Sam got a lot of snaps at left end with the second team defence, moving up on the depth chart because veteran William Hayes is rehabbing from an injury. Third-ranked Ferrer was leading 6-4, 2-2 when he suffered an inner thigh strain in his left leg. After seeking treatment in the locker room, the Spaniard returned to the court but lost the next two points before retiring. Ferrer said he will have an MRI on Friday and then assess his recovery. “Im very sad because I was playing great”, Ferrer said. While Fulhams statement failed to mention Meulensteens fate, the Dutchman later told BBC Radio 5 that he had been relieved of his duties at Fulham.WASHINGTON — When he found out he was getting his first start in seven weeks, Michal Neuvirth felt the same way he did before his NHL debut. Anxiety. Nerves. Butterflies. That first start, five seasons ago, went well for the Washington Capitals goalie and so did Fridays game against the Toronto Maple Leafs as he made 32 saves in a 3-2 victory. “I was nervous, couldnt really sleep before the game,” Neuvirth said. “I was feeling like I was as nervous as my first NHL game. My girlfriend told me just do what you do and try to be good.” Neuvirth was just that, giving up just two goals, both on deflections. In his first NHL game, Neuvirth had 31 saves in a 5-1 victory over Tampa Bay. “I thought he played a great game, I really did,” Washington coach Adam Oates said. “First period, I think he had some shots that allowed him to get into the game, which is good for him. After the second goal, he made a fantastic save that saved the game for us.” Neuvirths work paved the way for Joel Ward to score the go-ahead goal with just over 8 minutes left in the third period, and Alex Ovechkin added a goal and an assist. Nicklas Backstrom also scored as the Capitals won on back-to-back nights for the fourth time this year. It was the fourth straight loss for Toronto after a 3-2 victory over Detroit on Jan. 1 in the Winter Classic, and the Maple Leafs have been outscored 21-7 in the defeats. James Van Riemsdyk and Phil Kessel each had a goal and an assist. Coming off a 6-1 loss Thursday night at Carolina, Toronto saw some positives in the defeat. “This might be one of the better games weve played in a month. We showed desperation. We showed that we care,” coach Randy Carlyle said. “Weve been begging, pleading, kicking, kissing, whatever we can do to try and find a way to play with some confidence. It seems like weve squeezed our sticks here. Its mind boggliing.dddddddddddd” Kessels team-high 21st goal gave Toronto a short-lived 2-1 lead in the third when his shot went off the stick of Washington defenceman Karl Alzner and over the shoulder of Nuevirth. The Caps got the equalizer in similar fashion with 15:24 left as Backstroms severe-angle shot went off the skate of Maple Leafs centre Jay McClement and past Jonathan Bernier (32 saves) for his 11th goal. “A little lucky,” Oates said. “Their second goal, Alzy breaks a stick on that deflection. A little lucky, so were even.” Wards winner, his 13th of the season, came with 8:10 left, 6 seconds after Toronto had killed a penalty, as he fired a slap shot from 15 feet out on a pass from Marcus Johansson. “I was a little upset at first cause the way it kind of came off my stick,” Ward said. “But I kind of got enough to actually go in.” After that, Neuvirth kept Washington in command, making his final save with 12 seconds left. The last time the 25-year-old was set to play for the Capitals, on Nov. 29, he suffered a leg injury in warmups. He had not suited up for a game since. With the Caps playing their second of five games in a span of seven days, Braden Holtby struggling and rookie Philipp Grubauer coming off a taxing 4-3 win Thursday night at Tampa Bay, Neuvirth made his first start since Nov. 22. In the absence of Neuvirth, Grubauer (6-2-3) emerged as perhaps the teams most reliable goalie, prompting Neuvirth to request a trade last month. “Ive been watching a lot of hockey from the press box,” Neuvirth said. “I havent seen the puck for some time. Probably would be tough if I get scored on in the first couple minutes, but I didnt want to think about it.” NOTES: Washington D John Erskine had an eventful second period, drawing a pair of penalties for fighting. The scraps were against Cody Franson and Colton Orr. cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

That said, the strategy for Canada remains the same according to Melodie Daoust. “I think we need to keep shooting the puck like we did against Switzerland,” Daoust said. “And I think using our speed will be a big part of our game.” Finland is a formidable opponent and is coming off a hard-fought 3-1 loss to the United States. Swiss stopper Florence Schelling played brilliantly Saturday, making 64 saves as Team Canada held a huge territorial edge in play, but were unable to score on many of their chances. It likely wont be any easier against Raty. “We know we have to be better as we move forward,” said Canadian veteran Hayley Wickenheiser. “But these countries are getting harder to play against. The difference between the countries is narrowing, but it comes down to fitness and conditioning, and the fact that we are able to train and play together more.” Vetter had some words of advice for Team Canada about facing the Finns. “Youve got to be mentally in it,” Vetter said. “Finland is a great side who play great transitions and you need to make those saves. Their conditioning and speed makes them a team you cant look past.” Rebecca Johnston paced Canada with a goal and two assists against Switzerland. Wickenheiser scored a short-handed goal and other singles went to Jocelyne Larocque, Tara Watchorn and Marie-Philip Poulin. Téma: Jak postupovat / ian spent the past three sea In a franchise that has no time for spotlights, with a roster that has no interest in headlines, R.C. Buford may be the very embodiment of the all-for-one San Antonio Spurs. For more than two decades he has toiled in the shadows, happy to let the attention fall on coach Gregg Popovich and the team that Buford has played such a pivotal role in assembling. He quietly — happily — lives in the back channels and has built a reputation as one of the most respected executives in the NBA. Yet for all his impressive work over the previous 11 years as a general manager and architect of the most enduring success story in modern American sports, Buford had never been honoured by his peers as the leagues executive of the year. Until now. Buford won the award Wednesday, and as is the custom in the Alamo City, did as much as he could to downplay his significant contributions to a team that posted the best record in the NBA. “I think its not why we do what we do,” Buford said. “I think its a great honour for the group of people that have been here and have been through here that have built and an ownership group thats allowed a continuity to build a program that were proud of so to be recognized as a program that people respect by your peers, thats rewarding.” That Buford had never won the award before while helping to put together a team that won four championships and has posted a staggering 15 straight 50-win seasons has been one of the great mysteries in league annals. Hes helped put the Spurs at the forefront of the international invasion, implemented a system that demands commitment and humility over recognition and individual achievement, and has been partly responsible for so many teams pilfering his staff to run front offices or teams across the league. Yet he may have finally earned the award in his 12th season as GM because of what he didnt do. In the wake of a devastating loss to Miami in the NBA Finals last season, Buford didnt panic. He didnt give up on an aging Manu Ginobili. He didnt let Tiago Splitter get lured away by big money elsewhere. He followed the Spurs creed: Stay the course. Believe in the system. Never give in to outside influence. While other teams chased huge stars and made big splashes, Buford quietly re-signed Ginobili and Splitter and added second-tier free agent Marco Belinelli. The moves werent flashy, but were exactly what the Spurs, who enter Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals on Friday night leading Portland 1-0, needed to recover from that bitter defeat. “Its pretty cool,” Popovich said. “Were all excited for him; long overdue. Hes done a great job for a very long time. Were giving him the requisite amount of you-know-what all over the offices. He walks down the halls we hit the walls we hit the sides to make room for him.” Buford received nine first-place votes and 58 total points to win the award. Phoenixs Ryan McDonough (47) finished second for his superb job in turning the Suns from an afterthought into a 48-win team that just missed the playoffs. Neil Olshey, who added Robin Lopez, Dorell Wright and Thomas Robinson to bolster the Trail Blazers depth and get them into the playoffs, finished third in the voting with 34 points. Torontos Masai Ujiri and Miamis Pat Riley rounded out the top five. Popovich and Buford have made the Spurs the envy of the league, assembling one of the most uniquely stable systems in professional sports built around Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Ginobili, a trio that has won three championships together and keep coming back for more. “Weve been working with each other for a long time,” Popovich said. “We participate in everything. Its been a great relationship in that regard. We share everything its benefited both of us and the organization without a doubt. Just having that ability to communicate and having an owner that allows us to do that.” Popovich gets more of the credit for making the Spurs machine go, and thats just fine with Buford. But most around the league, and certainly everyone in San Antonio, recognizes what a big role Buford has played in helping the Spurs avoid the teardowns that almost every franchise has endured since he and Pop took over. “You recognize how difficult that is and how fortunate weve been that an ownership group has allowed us to stay together and have the opportunity to survive through the growing pains,” Buford said. "To have a group of players that have wanted to be a part of what this community of San Antonio and what our fans mean to them. To have wanted to stay with an ownership group the sacrifices that theyve made to make this a unique environment and then how theyve handled themselves that presents a platform that other players want to come join. “Again, were not in this to win an award. Were in this to try to win a championship. Thats the reward were all hoping for.” . . On Tuesday, they did it again. Roy Hibbert scored 22 points and Lance Stephenson fell just short of his fourth triple double this season, helping the Pacers hold off Torontos late charge for an 86-79 victory that allowed them to keep the NBAs best record. Its been two years since the BC Lions hoisted the Grey Cup and Wally Buono handed the head coaching reigns to Mike Benevides. Since then the Lions have entered each season with one of the most talented rosters in the league before falling short of expectations. Two years is a short time to be sure, and its not like the Lions cant supply excuses for their shortcomings since 2011 – Travis Lulays shoulder injury last year – but in the ultra-competitive and impatient world of professional sports, the pressure is on. Bad teams feel pressure to be better; good teams feel pressure to be the best. And dont forget the added burden of a potential home field for the Grey Cup and the three-year streak of Grey Cup champs winning at home. The Lions were smart in acquiring veteran leader and “quarterback 1A” Kevin Glenn from the Ottawa Redblacks during the CFL Draft for the fifth-overall draft pick. The price was a little steep for a player few figured would actually end up with Ottawa for the upcoming season, but with Lulays shoulder still a talking point, Glenn provides quality insurance at the most important position. BC has opted for younger projects at QB behind Lulay the past couple years but the Glenn acquisition makes sense for a team that cant get derailed for even a short period of time, should Lulay miss games – for whatever ailment – this season. Especially with Thomas DeMarcos selection in the Expansion Draft, Glenn gives the Lions peace of mind at one of their most worrisome areas for 2014. Another solid move, adding to a position of strength, was the free agent signing of Jamall Johnson. Johnson returns to BC after five seasons in Hamilton, his last a down year after being asked to play in the middle, and joins a frightening linebacking corps that already includes Solomon Elimimian and Adam Bighill. BCs task in once again entering the year as one of the most talented teams on paper is replacing receiver Nick Moore and a number of large bodies on the offensive line. Not to diminish Moores impact, but the Lions receiving corps still has enough burners, and more importantly, added Canadian content, that Lulay – or Glenn – shouldnt feel frustrated for lack of quality targets. The line however, may have to rely on more youngsters than would be considered ideal. The good news is their young contingent on the offensive line is talented and the unit is still anchored by perhaps the best left tackle in the game in Jovan Olafioye. While theyve fallen short of the Grey Cup the past two years, the Lions still qualified for the postseason those years, and were just a win away from a return trip in 2012; so it feels strange to suggest the team enters the season under pressure to do more. That reality is part testament to how well the Lions organization is run, but as is the case with all good teams, being good only coounts for so long; greatness sticks.dddddddddddd Like the Argos and Riders before them, look for the Lions to go all out in 2014. Notes Parting Ways After a long tenure with the Lions as an offensive coach and coordinator, Jacques Chapdelaine left the Lions early in the off-season, the coach and team mutually agreeing to part ways. It was certainly a big shakeup on Benevides staff, getting rid of the offensive mainstay of 10 of the past 11 years. Up and coming offensive mind Khari Jones replaced Chapdelaine as well as taking on the QB coach role. Expansion Draft The Lions search for a backup quarterback began anew after the Ottawa Redblacks selected Thomas DeMarco, who gained solid experience filling in for an injured Travis Lulay In 2013, in the first round of the Expansion Draft. BC also lost guard Matt Albright and DT Andrew Marshall to the Redblacks. Free Agency With the least amount of players to hit the free market, the Lions were one of the least active teams during the free agency period. They did lose promising receiver Nick Moore to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers however, but made a splash on the other side of the ball when they brought back linebacker Jamall Johnson, who last played for the Lions in 2008, from Hamilton. Retirements The Lions offensive line took a number of big hits this off-season with the retirements of three big pieces. Veteran centre Angus Reid was the first to announce his retirement. The 13-year veteran was a three-time West Division All-Star and one-time league All-Star. Not long after tackle Ben Archibald retired. The two-time All-Canadian spent the past three seasons in BC. Then late in the off-season Patrick Kabongo joined the two in retirement. The nine-year vet was a one-time West Division All-Star. CFL Draft The Lions traded out of the first round in order to solidify their backup quarterback situation by grabbing Kevin Glenn from the Redblacks for the fifth-overall pick. The team had two picks in the second round, grabbing OL Tchissakid Player from Northwestern State and FB Pascal Lochard from Laval. With their final five selections the Lions took LB Casey Chin from Simon Fraser in the third round, DL David Menard from Montreal in the fourth round, WR Alexander Fox from Bishops in the fifth round, DL Dylan Roper from Simon Fraser in the sixth round, and RB Guillaume Bourassa from Laval in the seventh round. Khalif Mitchell Returns One of the most enigmatic players in the league the past few seasons made his return to BC late in the off-season after a year with the Toronto Argonauts. Khalif Mitchells talent and impact at his DT position are unquestionable, but his return to the Lions was surprising after Mitchell seemingly burned a lot of bridges on his way out of BC a year ago. Lions GM Wally Buono has said all the right things about Mitchells return so far, noting the player has matured over the years. Téma: Jak postupovat / d a fight back from 2-0 do Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) – Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will likely return to the starting lineup Sunday against the New York Giants. Vick suffered a hamstring strain against the Giants on Oct. 6 and missed the past two games. He took the first-team reps at practice on Tuesday and the Philadelphia Inquirer cited a source as saying the veteran would get the nod Sunday, but his status will likely be evaluated as the week goes along. “Im optimistic about it,” said Vick. “At some point this week Ill test it out, I just dont want to do it this early in the week.” Eagles coach Chip Kelly has stated that the health of his quarterbacks would weigh heavily in his decision for the starting role. Vick said his health is improving each day, but he would not give a definitive answer whether or not he would suit up as the starter. “Its kind of sore, but its progressing every day,” Vick added. “Im excited to have an opportunity to play this week with this group of guys.” Nick Foles replaced Vick as the starter the past two games, but suffered a concussion in Sundays 17-3 loss to the Cowboys and must pass the mandatory concussion protocol in order to play. Matt Barkley took over for Foles against Dallas and threw a trio of interceptions. The rookie would be the starter Sunday if Foles and Vick are unable to play. Vick has thrown for 1,185 yards and has completed 53.8 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and two interceptions. The Eagles ground attack will get a boost if Vick plays. LOUIS — St.The Toronto Maple Leafs will be without the services of Tyler Bozak for a lot longer than anticipated, as the club has placed him on the long-term injured reserve list. As per the National Hockey Leagues collective bargaining agreement, Bozak must remain there for a minimum of 10 games or 24 days. The move is able to give the Maple Leafs some financial flexibility to move above the upper limit of this years salary cap and allow them to move players between the NHL club and the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, but long-term injury may not provide full relief of the players cap hit.dddddddddddd Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle said Thursday that Bozak is sidelined for, “an extended period of time” with an oblique strain and the club initially placed him on injured reserve. Téma: Jak postupovat / arterback Dan Marino inten The co-main event of the UFCs card in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night is the long and short of the heavyweight division. Six-foot-11 Stefan (Skyscraper) Struve takes on five-foot-11 Pat (HD) Barry. The smaller man says look for big entertainment. “Definitely, I would say this has got to be the best fight on the card,” Barry said confidently. "One, the height discrepancy. Two, both of our styles, I mean were two kickboxers coming in to put it all on the line. “A Dutch kickboxer, he cant fall to an American kickboxer,” he added, playing devils advocate. “Thats just unheard of in the kickboxing world. The Americans arent suppose to be as good at kickboxing as the Dutch are. Thats the fact so he cant lose a kickboxing match to me.” The 23-year-old Struve, who has excellent submission skills, may elect to bypass the fight for bragging rights by taking Barry down. The ground game is not the 32-year-old Americans world. The main event of the televised card at the Verizon Center pits bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz against Demetrious (Mighty Mouse) Johnson. Struve (25-5) weighed in at 261 pounds Friday while Barry (6-3) was 243. Barry plays down the height advantage. “Everybody Stefan comes across, fights or trains with is shorter than he is,” he said. “Everybody that I come across, fight or train with is taller than I am. So I think this fight is going to be pretty much everyday normal.” Barry may be American but he is also all too familiar with Dutch kickboxers. A former K-1 fighter himself, he spent five years training in Amsterdam with four-time K-1 world champion Ernesto Hoost. “It was the best thing that happened to my kickboxing career,” Barry said. “The Dutch are the best kickboxers on the planet in my opinion, so it only made me better.” In his UFC debut, Barry used his wicked leg kicks to literally chop down six-foot-three Dan Evensen at UFC 92 in December 2008. Edmontons Tim (The Thrashing Machine) Hague caught him in a submission next time out but Barry rebounded to earn the win over six-foot-four Dutch kickboxer Antoni Hardonk. Losses to Mirko (Cro Cop) Filipovic and Cheick Kongo were sandwiched around a win over Joey Beltran. The Kongo fight in June saw the six-foot-four Frenchman snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with a first-round TKO win over Barry in a wild two minutes 39 seconds. “Insane fight,” said Canadian lightweight T.J. Grant. “I would say it was probably the craziest back-and-forth fight Ive ever seen.” Kongo was knocked down twice and looked out on his feet. Referee Dan Miragliotta seemed about to step in but pulled back. Barry seemed destined for victory but when he rushed in to finish the fight, he walked straight into a right to the head and vicious uppercut that knocked him senseless. Barry, who says he has watched the fight “a million times,” has no complaints that the fight wasnt stopped earlier when he held the advantage. “It would have robbed Cheick Kongo of one of the best comebacks like ever in the UFC, and Id say the best comeback in his lifetime.” Looking back, Barry says despite the outcome, the Kongo fight showed that the training for the bout with his new team in Minneapolis was “perfect.” “I didnt learn so much from the fight but everything I did in my training, preparation for the fight was correct.” Barry, a New Orleans native, continues to work with Brock Lesnars Deathclutch team and has moved house from Milwaukee to Minnesota to be closer to them. Struve is coming off a debacle of his own, felled by Travis Brownes savage Superman punch at UFC 130 in May. . A report in the Los Angeles Times on Monday had Marino, along with 14 other players, linked to the lawsuit. But according to the Sun Sentinel, Marino and his lawyers will be in discussions to withdraw his name. “It was never Marinos intention to initiate litigation in this case, but to ensure that in the event he had adverse health consequences down the road, he would be covered with health benefits. They are working to correct tthe error,” a source said to the Sun-Sentinel.dddddddddddd Marino has said in the past he had two reported concussions during his 17-year career. Nearly 5,000 other former players have alleged the NFL misled them about the long-term dangers of concussions. The NFL has denied those claims. The lawsuit doesnt specify any medical problems suffered by the plaintiffs. It seeks unspecified damages and medical monitoring. The NFL and the original group of players agreed on a $765 million settlement last August. But the settlement was rejected by a federal judge in January. Téma: Jak postupovat / was the NFLs top defensive pla KAMLOOPS, B.C. — The B.C. Lions turned to a familiar face when their ground game was in tatters late last season, and Stefan Logan is looking forward to once again exploiting his unique backfield partnership with Andrew Harris in 2014. “Its like ketchup and mustard,” Logan said of the Lions running back duo. “If you dont have ketchup and mustard on your hamburger, it wont be any good.” Logan was a dynamic threat for the Lions in 2008 before jumping to the NFL, but when the phone stopped ringing with offers down south he decided on a return to his former CFL club. “As I was at home waiting on calls I was working out and staying in shape and stuff like that,” said Logan. “When I talked to the B.C. Lions I was more than willing to come up here and help us win games.” A leaky offensive line and a tendency to abandon the ground attack meant the Lions were without a 100-yard rusher for 11 straight contests in 2013, but the speedy Logans injection into the lineup helped the situation improve almost overnight. A more south-runner, Harris was no longer the only focus for defences, and both he and Logan found some traction as the Lions ran for almost 200 yards a game over the seasons final three weeks. “(Harris) does a lot of different things that I dont do,” Logan said at training camp last week. "Hes more of a downhill, patient runner and hits the hole. Im more of a slasher, getting inside and outside. “He has the ability to do certain things that Im not that great at, and I can do certain things that he cant do. Thats what makes it such a great running back (combination).” Despite all the struggles last season, Harris still managed to rush for 998 yards and seven touchdowns. Clearly frustrated at times, the Winnipeg native never criticized his coaches or teammates and is now looking forward to having Logan as a backfield counterpart for a full season. “Its going to be a great give-and-take scenario. Having two guys to spell each other and feed off each other … any time he makes a play, Im going to want to make a play,” said Harris. "I think we both bring a different skill set and thats something we can utilize. Having us both on the field at the same time is going to create mismatches with linebackers and in the pass game as well. “I think no matter what we do were going to be productive.” Not unfamiliar with the spotlight of being a ball carrier after mainly returning kicks in the NFL, Logan had sympathy for Harris when things werent going well last season. “I understand when people point the finger at you and its not your fault. Its not like his running style had changed or he started tipping (plays) or anything like that,” said Logan. "When youve got people pointing the finger, its always going to be towards you because youre running the ball. “If guys miss a block, the fans dont see that. All they see is you.” Lions head coach Mike Benevides parted ways with offensive co-ordinator Jacques Chapdelaine after last season and replaced him with former CFL quarterback Khari Jones in hopes of reinvigorating a stagnant attack. “What everybodys seen the last couple years in our league is you have to run the football,” said Benevides. "Two years ago we were the best running team, last year we werent but I think we showed an identity at the end of the season when we were running for 200 yards a game. “With (Logan and Harris), you have two changeup guys. You have two elite players with different skill sets that can attack out of the backfield.” Jones has made it clear he wants to be aggressive, and with starting quarterback Travis Lulay still struggling to come back from shoulder surgery, the Lions could lean on Logan and Harris even more. “Its going to give us some great options on offence,” said Jones. “Its going to be our job as an offensive staff to find out how to best utilize those two guys and get them the ball in the right positions.” The Lions will host the Grey Cup in November, and with the CFL and its players association now waiting to ratify a new labour agreement, the team is eager to see what a Logan-Harris backfield can do from the start. “Were all about getting those positive yards and not putting that heat on our back. We want to put the team on our back to move forward,” said Logan. "I felt (Harriss) pain last year and I wanted to come in and boost him up and let him know that its going to be OK. “I told him: You and I are going to be back here together and were going to run this thing down their throat until the season is over.” . 1. PHIL JACKSON: Would be a major coup of the NY Knicks to get him as their President. Bottom line, owner James Dolan needs to stay out of the way. Later, his catcher delivered the deciding stroke. Price struck out 10 in his Detroit debut and was long gone when Alex Avila homered in the 12th inning to lift the Tigers over the New York Yankees 4-3 Tuesday night.FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Rex Ryan bolted out of his office the moment he heard Ed Reed was cut. He wanted to make sure general manager John Idzik knew one of his favourite players was available for the New York Jets to pursue. “Its only a rumour that I pulled a hamstring,” Ryan said, grinning. “Thats not true.” The Jets signed the nine-time Pro Bowl safety Thursday, bringing one of the NFLs greatest playmaking defensive players to a secondary on a defence that ranks 24th against the pass. The 35-year-old Reed was released Tuesday by Houston, cleared waivers Wednesday and joined less than 24 hours later. “John had a big smile on his face,” Ryan said about the Jets GM. “I think he anticipated it, but he had already beaten me to the punch. He had already set it in motion with our scouts.” Reed joined his new Jets teammates on the practice field wearing a green No. 22 jersey; his familiar No. 20 is currently worn by cornerback Kyle Wilson. Reed laughed when he was asked if he thinks hes got anything left. “I dont think Id be here if they didnt think that,” he said after his first practice with the Jets. "I know what I know. I know how I feel and I know what Ive put in my off-season workouts. Im ready to go. Youll see. “You guys can be the judge of it.” The Jets released outside linebacker Ricky Sapp to make room on the roster for Reed. Ryan and defensive co-ordinator Dennis Thurman coached Reed for eight years in Baltimore. Reed has always been a favourite of Ryan, who once labeled him the greatest safety to play the game. While his physical skills no longer make him one of the games elite players, Reed will be able to serve as a leader in the secondary and help bring along young safeties Antonio Allen, Jaiquawn Jarrett and Josh Bush. “This had nothing to do with sentiment,” Ryan said. “We believe that Ed will be a great signing for us and hes going to help this football team, without question.” Reed said New England also showed interest, as well as one other team, but everything seemed right about coming to the Jets. “It just fits,” he said. “I know the system. Rex was like, Go ahead and lets see what youve got.” The fact that the Jets (5-4) are in the playoff hunt was also a plus. “Thats a huge factor,” Reed said. “It was a huge factor in playing this year, in general, being with a team that was going to contend and be in the playoffs.” Theres a good chance Reed will be ready to play Sunday at Buffalo, at least in certain situations, and it is a low-risk, high-reward situation for thee Jets.dddddddddddd. “Weve had some issues with the deep ball,” Ryan said. “Let them throw it there now.” Reed would like to start, of course, but added that hes fine with whatever the coaches want him to do, including playing in dime packages or special teams. “They had a good thing going before I came,” Reed said. “I dont plan on rocking the boat.” That was a bit of an issue in Houston, as Reed missed the Texans first two games after off-season hip surgery and was relegated to a backup role, making just 16 tackles with no interceptions. He was unhappy about not starting after signing a three-year, $15 million deal in the off-season following 11 years in Baltimore. Reed also criticized the team for being outplayed and outcoached after the Texans seventh straight loss last Sunday. “To put it simple for you,” Reed said, “it wasnt a good fit.” Texans defensive co-ordinator Wade Phillips said Thursday that Reeds criticism was not why he was released, but rather because the teams younger players were performing well and Reed wasnt getting a lot of playing time. Phillips laughed when he was asked if the Texans thought they were going to get more out of Reed when they signed him. “Yeah, I think thats probably an understatement,” Phillips said. “We all thought he was going to be J.J. Watt in the secondary. And things didnt work out that way.” Reed, who won a Super Bowl last season with the Ravens, was the NFLs top defensive player in 2004. In 11-plus seasons, the ball-hawking Reed has 61 interceptions, including seven returned for touchdowns. Hes a five-time first-team All-Pro who also holds the NFL record with 1,541 yards on interception returns. His nine career post-season interceptions, including one in the Ravens Super Bowl win, tie him for the league mark. Reed said recent criticism of him has come as a result of being held to higher standards than most safeties. “I created that monster, and Ive been blessed to create that monster,” he said. “I love it.” Reed had a whirlwind 24 hours, which began with him working out in Georgia when he cleared waivers around 4 p.m. Wednesday. Less than six hours later, he was on a plane to New Jersey. “We had him at hello,” Thurman said. Reed met with Idzik before going to bed around 2:30 a.m., and then heading back to the facility after a few hours of sleep. “We put him in some defences just to see what he could remember with his partner (Dawan) Landry out there,” Ryan said. "It was like, Whoa, here we go. “It was like he hadnt missed a beat.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

The victory helps the Gunners get another step closer to next seasons Champions League competition. 5. Téma: Jak postupovat / SHAWINIGAN, Que. — Ma (SportsNetwork.com) – The Edmonton Oilers are coming off Tuesdays 6-2 home loss against Phoenix, but will look to rebound tonight at home against the Colorado Avalanche. Thursdays encounter is the first of three scheduled meetings between the Oilers and Avs this season. The Oilers have some lineup moves ahead of this game as defenceman Jeff Petry and Anton Belov will watch the game as healthy scratches. The Oilers also have claimed two straight, four of five and seven of their last 10 home games against Colorado, but Edmonton is just 3-9-0 at Rexall Place this season. Edmonton trailed the Coyotes by a slim 3-2 margin after two periods on Tuesday, but Phoenix scored three unanswered goals in the final stanza to breeze to the win. David Perron scored both goals for the Oilers, while Devan Dubnyk turned aside 27-of-33 shots. “We really unraveled there in the third,” said Oilers forward Taylor Hall. “It was a close game at one point, 3-2. We let it slip away from us. That seems to be the kind of theme this year.” With Ilya Bryzgalov still out with concussion-like symptoms, Dubnyk could get the start again on Thursday. Dubnyk is 7-3-1 with a 1.94 goals against average in 12 career games against Colorado, while current Oilers backup Jason LaBarbera is 2-6-0 with a 3.19 GAA in nine lifetime outings versus the Avs. The Avalanche swept a home-and-home series with Minnesota over the weekend and havent played since notching a 3-2 shootout win over the visiting Wild on Saturday. That victory came after Fridays 3-1 decision at Minnesota and the two-game winning streak allowed Colorado to close out November by winning five of six games. Colorado also is carrying a three-game road winning streak into Thursdays tilt and the club has an impressive 9-2-0 record as the guest this season. On Saturday, Ryan OReilly beat Josh Harding through the legs in the shootout and Semyon Varlamov sealed the Avalanches 3-2 win over the Wild with a glove save at the other end. In the second game of a home-and-home, the Avalanche bounced back after giving up two goals in the last 3:27 of the third period, including Mikko Koivus tying goal with 5.7 seconds left. Koivu was one of three Minnesota skaters to be denied by Varlamov in the Avs first shootout of the season. Varlamovs glove save on Jason Pominville came after OReilly scored the shootouts only goal in the third round. Gabriel Landeskog and Nathan MacKinnon scored in regulation for Colorado, while Varlamov made 35 saves through overtime. It was the third time in the last five outings that the Avs have gone past regulation. They have won all three of those tilts, but Colorado doesnt want to make a habit of playing past regulation. “We have to do a better job of winning these games in regulation but at least we got the two points,” said the rookie MacKinnon. “It was a good couple of games.” The Avs will continue their road trip Friday in Calgary before capping the trek Sunday night in Vancouver. Marc Beckstead, Taylor Burke and Marc-Olivier Crevier-Morin chipped in with two assists apiece. Daniel Audette and Tim Wieser scored for the Phoenix (15-30-7), who dropped their fourth straight, and Gabriel Labbe assisted on both of his clubs goal. Gatineaus Anthony Brodeur only had to make 15 saves for his 11th win of the season. Sherbrookes Maxime Lagace turned aside 40-of-47 shots in a losing cause. When you think teams you imagine a group of people who all shop at the same jersey store and move together in a large pack with a common goal, which is usually scoring goals. NEW ORLEANS — Rudy Gay went from ejection to redemption in just a couple of days. One game after a miserable showing in Oklahoma City, Gay tied a career high with 41 points and the Sacramento Kings cruised to a 114-97 victory at the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night. “Honestly, I didnt even know how much I scored,” Gay said. “It was more about getting the win.” In a loss two nights earlier to the Thunder, Gay scored only six points before being sent off the court with two technical fouls in the fourth quarter. But Gay hit 16 of 25 shots in the Big Easy, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range, to match a point total he last put up on Dec. 13, 2009, in Miami. It was going so well for Gay that he casually walked the ball up the court with an eye on the clock late in the third quarter, and then drilled a pull-up jumper from 27 feet. “He put on a show tonight, coming off a game in Oklahoma City where he didnt play very well and got thrown out,” Kings coach Michael Malone said. “He wanted to bounce back and show everybody what he is capable of.” DeMarcus Cousins had 18 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks for the Kings, who have won five of eight. Isaiah Thomas added 20 points and 11 assists. “When in doubt, go to Rudy and youll get an assist,” Thomas said. “He really carried us tonight.” Tyreke Evans scored 17 for New Orleans, which trimmed a 23-point deficit to six shortly before halftime, only to fall behind by 23 again in the third quarter and remain behind by double digits the rest of the way. Anthony Davis scored 16 points and blocked four shots, and New Orleans rookie centre Jeff Withey had a career-high 14 points, but that was not nearly enough to prevent the Pelicans from losing for the ninth time in 10 games. The latest loss came one night after the Pelicans snapped an eight-game skid in Memphis. “We just didnt have a lot of juice collectively from our starters tonight and certainly didnt play with any kind of intensity that was comparable to what we did last night,” Pelicans coach Monty Williams said. “That is just part of being a pro and understanding that when you have an emotional win like we did last night, theres a quick turnaround.” Quincy Acy grabbed 10 rebounds for the Kings, who outrebounded New Orleanns 46-35.dddddddddddd The Kings were the sharper team from the outset, shooting 70 per cent (14 of 20) in the first period, during which they scored 38 points and built an 18-point lead. “Obviously I could point to a few things, but that would be emotional and I dont want to do that,” Williams said. “Theres some things Ive discussed with our team that they need to be better at, and they understand. … Were not the type of team that can just put our jersey on and step onto the floor. Weve got to go out and play with a high level of energy.” New Orleans had 10 players in uniform, out of 15 on the roster. Ryan Anderson (herniated disk), Jrue Holiday (stress fracture, right shin) and Jason Smith (right knee) were injured. Reserve shooting guard Anthony Morrow was sick and newly acquired guard Tyshawn Taylor was not with the team. Téma: Jak postupovat / s on Monday, while Benjamin B WICHITA, Kan. — Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson couldnt hear himself amid the roar in Koch Arena, so he kept stomping on the floor in a fruitless attempt to get his teams attention. Hed say later that the crowd was the biggest factor in the game. The Salukis hung tough for all but about 3 minutes Tuesday tonight, finally falling 78-67 to fourth-ranked Wichita State. It put an end to Southern Illinois four-game winning streak, its best in more than four years, while leaving the Shockers still unbeaten. “Gosh, that crowd,” Hinson said. “I hate them — and I love them. Its an oxymoron.” Make no mistake: Hinson loves the passion of Missouri Valley Conference fans. He just wishes he could have better communicated with his players down the stretch, when the game hung in the balance. Instead, the Salukis (10-16, 6-7) starting turning it over on offence, the Shockers (26-0, 13-0) started getting easy baskets at the other end, and Hinson was left standing on the sideline with his hands on his hips, watching mirthlessly as the final seconds ticked away. Anthony Beane scored 25 points to lead the Salukis. “Theres a reason theyre 26-0. Theyre damn good,” Hinson said, “but they made shots and that crowd just went nuts, and we came down and said, Hey, its close to April 15! Well just give you the ball and well get a tax deduction!” Ron Baker scored 19 points and Cleanthony Early had 18 for the Shockers, who became the first team to start 26-0 since Memphis in 2008. Five games stand in the way of Wichita State becoming the first team since Saint Josephs in 2004 to have a perfect regular season. The Hawks didnt lose that year until the Atlantic 10 tournament. “Just survive,” Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall said. “That was not our best effort, obviously. They get a lot of credit for that. They had a great game plan. They packed it in and we didnt make any shots from the arc. It was a good strategy. Finally we made some in the second half and pulled away slowly, but give them credit. They played well.” The Shockers trailed at halftime for the ninth time during their unbeaten run, though the 33-32 deficit could have been a whole lot worse the way they were shooting the ball. Wichita State was just 2 of 14 from 3-point range in the first half, most of them missing just about everything. In fact, the only shots the Shockers seemed to make outside of 3 feet were a series of free throws that Early made to keep them within striking distance. It didnt help that the Shockers were in foul trouble, too. Baker, Early and Fred VanVleet — their top three scorers — were on the bench with two fouls apiece late in the half. Once they returned after the break, the Shockers started to pick up steam. Early converted a three-point play with 15:47 to put them ahead 44-43, the seventh lead change in the game. Baker added a silky-smooth jumper, then knocked down his first 3 moments later as Wichita State took control and Koch Arena suddenly got rocking. Beane refused to let the Salukis wilt under the pressure. The sophomore guard kept slicing through Wichita States man-to-man defence for baskets near the rim, more than once drawing contact along the way. When the Shockers finally clamped down on him, he deftly found the open teammate for wide-open looks. Jalen Pendletons three-point play pulled the Salukis to 69-64 with 2 1/2 minutes left, but Baker answered with his third 3-pointer. The Shockers turned up the pressure and forced Sean OBrien into a turnover that led to a run-out by Baker, who was fouled and made both free throws. Still with a chance to make it a game, Southern Illinois promptly turned it over again, and this time the Salukis allowed VanVleet to go for an uncontested layup that made it 76-64. Wichita State merely had to coax the final seconds off the clock to remain undefeated. “Its cool, you know?” Early said. “But we take it game by game, day by day. I dont think were looking at an undefeated season because you have to beat the team thats in front of you.” wholesale jerseys . Téma: Jak postupovat / t goes on out there. We bl PITTSBURGH — Tony Sanchez knows hes heading back to Triple-A soon enough. The Pittsburgh Pirates backup catcher will be going to Indianapolis when Russell Martins strained left hamstring is healed. Its a reality Sanchez can deal with so long as he makes a contribution while given the chance. At the moment, thats hardly a problem. Sanchez tiebreaking single off Baltimores Ryan Webb in the bottom of the seventh scored Starling Marte to give the Pirates the lead for good in a 9-8 win on Wednesday night. Coming off an embarrassing 9-2 loss on Tuesday and desperately in need of something positive, Sanchez helped Pittsburgh earn a split of the brief two-game interleague set. “Its almost a must win,” Sanchez said. “We didnt have a really good road trip. To start off this homestand and go 0-2 it wouldnt have been pretty. Thats huge for me.” Andrew McCutchen went 3 for 4 with an RBI and his first two extra-base hits in more than two weeks for Pittsburgh, which won for only the third time in its past nine games. Marte and Ike Davis had three hits and two RBIs apiece for the Pirates. Bryan Morris (4-0) earned the victory after allowing the Orioles to tie the game in the top of the seventh. No biggie. Mark Melancon worked a perfect ninth for his seventh save, one that capped a weird night in which the teams combined for 14 runs in the first two innings while starters Wandy Rodriguez and Chris Tillman took turns getting hit hard. It ended in more orderly fashion after Marte led off the seventh with a bunt single, moved to third on a single by Davis and scored when Sanchez laced a Webb offering into right field. “Its a game-winning hit, hes got a few of them,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of Sanchez. “Hes got extreme confidence.” Nelson Cruz hit his 14th homer of the season and drove in three runs for the Orioles. Nick Markakis, Chris Davis and JJ Hardy had two hits and one RBI apiece but Baltimore left 10 men on base. “You had two early exits from starters and it became a game out of the bullpen and they pushed one across there late,” Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. “But our guys, we had a couple opportunities to score some more, but I cant fault the offence.” Pittsburgh began the night eight games under .500 in part because of a struggling starting staff that has hardly looked like the group that led the team to the post-season last fall. Things didnt get much better, but the bullpen briefly recaptured its touch. Vin Mazzaros worked 3 1-3 innings of hitless relief to steady things after Rodriguez made a mess of things during 1 2-3 poor innings. The veteran left-hander has struggled with his command and his conviction all season and did little to convince Hurdle he was ready to turn the corner despite being spotted a 4-0 first-inning lead thanks in part to a two-run triple by Marte. The 35-year-old Rodriguez, in the final year of his contract, promptly gave the big lead away as Cruz led off the second a blistering solo home run and added a two-run double later in the inning to put the Orioles in front. Rodriguezs throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Tillman meant he was only charged with one earned run for his 1 2-3 innings of work, dropping his ERA from 6.84 to 6.75. Hurdle said it was too early to discuss whether Rodriguez would make his next start, though Rodriguez insists hes healthy after missing time early this season with a left knee injury. Tillman couldnt take advantage of the reprieve. Coming off a shutout win over Kansas City in his previous start, Tillman only managed to get three outs. He failed to retire a batter in the second as the first six Pittsburgh batters reached base. Brad Brach came on in relief to get out of the inning, but not until after the Orioles trailed 8-6. NOTES: Pirates closer Jason Grilli could return as early as Saturday. Grilli has been on the disabled list since sustaining a left oblique strain on April 20. He threw 20 pitches in a simulated game on Tuesday without incident … The Orioles sent LHP Wei-Yin Chen back to Baltimore ahead of the team on Wednesday as a precaution due to concerns over weather in Pittsburgh. Chen (5-2, 3.69 ERA) is scheduled to start on Thursday against Cleveland. … The Pirates begin a four-game series with Washington on Thursday. Edinson Volquez (1-4, 4.71) starts for the Pirates against Washingtons Blake Treinen (0-1, 0.77). nfl jerseys china . Thats how perfection-driven the New England Patriots are. On a day when tight end Rob Gronkowski is simultaneously strong and nimble while setting an NFL record, on a day when the defence again makes just enough plays to compensate for all the yards it allowed, on a day when a 34-27 score versus the Washington Redskins meant a fifth straight victory, it was Brady who had to be calmed down after a rare fourth-quarter mistake. With the Patriots leading by seven, Brady tried to find Tiquan Underwood at the back of the end zone and was instead picked off by Josh Wilson with 6:30 remaining. The Redskins then began a march downfield that could have sent Sundays game to overtime — even as Brady sat on the bench and exchanged words with offensive co-ordinator Bill OBrien. “I threw a pretty bad interception, so he wasnt happy about it,” said Brady, who completed 22-of-37 passes for 357 yards with three touchdowns and his first interception since Nov. 6. “And there was probably a long line of coaches and players that were pretty (upset) at me after that, but Billy got to me first. He let me have it; I deserved it.” And yet Brady had a 107.6 rating and upped his career touchdown pass total to 294, moving ahead of Warren Moon (291) into sole possession of sixth place all-time. Brady also surpassed the 4,000-yard mark for the fourth time in his career. But the Patriots (10-3) have such high expectations that a miscue in a close win over a struggling team like the Redskins (4-9) gets the juices flowing between player and coach. “Were both pretty emotional guys,” Brady said. Gronkowski, meanwhile, caught six passes for a career-high 160 yards and set the NFL single-season mark for touchdown receptions by a tight end. His 14th was an 11-yard grab that moved him ahead of Antonio Gates (2004) and Vernon Davis (2009), and No. 15 was a 24-yard scoring strike in the second half. But it was the play immediately before No. 14 that everyone will remember. Gronkowski made a diving catch, got up, dragged DeJon Gomes and Reed Doughty a few yards and escaped while tiptoeing along the sidelines. Gronkowski tiptoed again when hit by Wilson and stumbled ahead to complete the 49-yard gain. “That play was right in front of us,” New England coach Bill Belichick said. “He did a great job there, getting the ball off the ground, breaking a couple tackles, staying in bounds — he had almost no room to work with on the sideline. … Hes a tough guy to cover, a ttough guy to match up on.dddddddddddd” But the Patriots didnt have the game won until they caught a couple of breaks at the end of Washingtons final possession. The Redskins drove from their own 20 to New Englands five, but Santana Moss catch at the goal line was negated by a pass interference call on the receiver, and then Moss tipped a pass into the hands of linebacker Jerod Mayo to save the day for a New England defence that ranks last in the league in yards allowed — and one that cant keep cutting it this close come playoff time. “You kind of dont want to give up those yards in the first place,” Patriots safety James Ihedigbo said. “But at the same time, were going to bow our necks once we get down there, and say, Hey, theyre not getting in the end zone.” The Redskins (4-9) amassed a season-high 463 yards but lost for the eighth time in nine games. Already playing without tight end Fred Davis and left tackle Trent Williams — both suspended for the rest of the season last week for violating the NFLs drugs policy — Washington lost another offensive starter during pre-game warm-ups when right tackle Jammal Brown injured his right groin. But it was the officiating that had the Redskins steamed. In addition to the crucial flag on Moss, linebacker London Fletcher was whistled in the second quarter for a personal foul call that appeared particularly egregious. The referee announced that Fletcher hit a late-sliding Brady with a forearm to the head, but Fletchers arm clearly hit the quarterback in the chest. Coach Mike Shanahan said he thought the call against Fletcher was “horrible.” “We dont get no calls around here, man,” Moss said. “You guys have been covering us for a long time. Yall see what goes on out there. We blow our breath on one of the doggone guys over there and its a penalty. Our quarterback gets killed — and you just almost hit somebody thats a quarterback and we get flagged. So a lot of stuff goes on. But I guess weve got to play against a team and the ref.” Notes: The Redskins were the only current NFL franchise New England had never beaten on the road. … Roy Helu (126) became the first Washington rookie to run for 100 yards in three straight games. … Patriots WR Wes Welker became one of three players in NFL history with four 100-catch seasons, joining Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison. … Redskins FB Mike Sellers hyperextended his right elbow. … The end zones were marked “Army” and “Navy,” leftovers from the game the stadium hosted a day earlier. Top-seeded Djokovic, who is making only his second appearance this year after reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over 54th-ranked Istomin of Uzbekistan. “It wasnt as easy as the scoreline indicates,” said Djokovic, who has won in Dubai on four occasions. "I needed to work for my games. “Having not played for more than four, five weeks, an official match, obviously it takes its toll on the court.” Djokovic saved all four break points he faced on serve and broke Istomin three times — in the third and ninth games of the first set and in the second game of the second set. Del Potro was not so fortunate, being forced to retire against Somdev Devvarman of India after losing the first-set tiebreaker 7-6 (3). Since winning the Sydney title last month, Del Potro has been struggling with a left wrist injury that has conjured up memories of similar pain he experienced in his right wrist four years ago. In 2010, the year after he won the U.S. Open, he played only three tournaments before and after surgery on his right wrist. Del Potro was fighting back tears in Dubai when he came to talk to the media after his retirement. “I dont feel really well,” he said. "My wrist is hurting a lot and everybody knows what happened to me four years ago with my other wrist. “It was really tough to play today. I tried everything. I cannot be the player I would like to be.” Having felt the pain in his left wrist during the Australian Open, Del Potro went at the end of January to consult with Dr. Richard Berger, who performed his right wrist surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. The doctor recommended a course of physical therapy. Asked if he would have kept playing if he won the first set, Del Potro said: “I dont think so, no. It was hurting too much.” Devvarman, a wild card who won a challenger in New Delhi last week, hit a service winner on his third set point in the tiebreaker. That proved to be the final point of the match. “Its unfortunate, especially for a guy like him,” Devvarman said. “I realized he wasnt comfortable hitting backhands and I tried to make him hit as many as I could, and he wasnt really hitting over it so I knew he wasnt happy.” Third-seeded Tomas Berdych extended his winning streak to eight matches with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Romanian qualifier Marius Copil.
