Stokley sustained a concussion in Sundays game against the Minnesota Vikings. He has had multiple concussions over his 15-year career, and the Ravens determined after testing that the 37-year-old would not be able to return anytime soon. Stokley began his career with the Ravens in 1999 and signed a one-year contract as a free agent in August. He battled through a series of injuries and played in only six games, catching 13 passes for 115 yards. Stokley was replaced on the roster by running back Bernard Scott, who was waived Saturday to make room for tight end Dennis Pitta wholesale nfl jerseys … thanks to every “buddy” that was involved. In years past, that very thought might send a very cold shiver through the U.S. speed team. At least this time, the Americans are loaded with depth in downhill and super-G. Julia Mancuso, Stacey Cook, Leanne Smith and Laurenne Ross are the skiers the Americans could be counting on for medals in Russia if Vonn, the reigning Olympic downhill champion, cant compete after hurting her surgically repaired right knee again. All of them made the podium at least once last season and all of them were top 16 in the downhill standings. Add Alice McKennis, who won a World Cup event last season but is still recovering from a shattered right leg, and its an even more dynamic mix. This also creates quite a few tough decisions for womens coach Alex Hoedlmoser, since there are only four race spots available in Sochi in the downhill and again in the super-G. That means someone well-deserving could be left out of the starting gate. “One of the best traits of our team is everyone has the understanding that if you get beat out for that spot, its not somebody elses fault. Its probably something you did or your own fault in some way,” said Cook, who had the fastest time in downhill training on Wednesday. “Theres not a lot of the blame game that you might see typically.” Vonn remains unsure just how much her latest knee injury will affect her Sochi hopes. In an interview on NBCs “Today” show Wednesday, the four-time overall World Cup champion was asked whether her knee can withstand the pressure of training for the Olympics. “To be honest, I dont know,” Vonn replied. Vonn crashed during a downhill training run in Copper Mountain last week and partially tore a reconstructed ligament in her knee. She skipped the events in Beaver Creek, but is hoping to be ready for the upcoming races in Lake Louise, Alberta. “I dont know exactly where shes at (in her recovery), but she doesnt sit still easily,” Cook said. If Vonn is only 50 per cent fit by the time Sochi rolls around, and someone else is completely healthy, just who gets to race? “Were still gooing to bring the potential medallists down to Sochi,” Hoedlmoser said.dddddddddddd “We can put more people in training runs and then make a decision before race day.” There are plenty of chances between now and Sochi to stand out, beginning this weekend on the new course at Beaver Creek created ahead of the 2015 world championships. “You are in control of your results,” said Smith, who was 14th in training on Wednesday, 1.21 seconds behind Cooks top time. “If youre skiing well and have the right mentality, its going to work out just fine.” The recent success in speed events has a lot to do with the presence of Vonn and Mancuso. Training alongside those two icons over the years has elevated everyones performance. “To see them get on the podium, week in and week out, was obviously very inspirational for someone like me, who was just scrapping down these courses to try and get World Cup points,” said Smith, who had two downhill podium finishes last season. "You learn and you figure out what it takes. You compete with your teammates. All of a sudden, you are in a situation that were in, where everyone is super competitive and you still have those two girls that are leading the pack. “Its just fun, good pressure for everyone else. Its something to aspire to.” For years, Cook didnt believe she had the ability to keep up with Vonn in a race. But last season in Lake Louise, the 29-year-old had a breakthrough, finishing runner-up to Vonn in two races. It showed Cook she was on the right path. “Its really become a challenge to myself, to believe that I can compete with her,” Cook said. "Ive really accepted that over the last few years instead of hid behind it. “It takes perfection for me to beat her. That is the absolute challenge, to reach perfection going 80 mph (129 kph) on two planks.” Mancuso sees a renewed confidence in the speed team, a definite camaraderie, too. “Were all leaning on each other. Thats nice,” said Mancuso, a three-time Olympic medallist . “Just all of us together trying to go fast. Everyone is cheering for each other and thats always fun.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Curtis Davies and Robert Koren secured the victory with goals inside 35 minutes of the fifth-round replay against the second-tier side. Leonardo Ulloa pulled one back for Brighton midway through the second half but couldnt force the game into extra time. Completing the quarterfinal draw, Charlton also beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 to set up a meeting with Sheffield United. Gonzalez participated in his final game on Sunday, Atlantas 21-20 defeat at the hands of the NFC South champion Carolina Panthers, having posted four catches for 46 yards. BOSTON — After putting only five shots on goal in the first period, the Boston Bruins took aim against Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo in the second and third. Three of their shots got past Luongo and although only two of them counted for goals, that was more than enough offence for the Bruins to beat the slumping Canucks 3-1 on Tuesday night. “The first period was a little bit of a tough period for us. I thought our puck management or how we move the puck around wasnt great,” Boston coach Claude Julien said. “It wasnt really sharp, but it got better in the second and third period and that made a big difference.” Boston led 1-0 after the first on Milan Lucics goal despite being outshot 9-5. Jarome Iginla and Daniel Paille added goals in the second period for the Bruins, and Tuukka Rask kept the Canucks from rallying with several saves on short-handed opportunities that could have invigorated Vancouver. The biggest was stopping Daniel Sedin on a breakaway, which led to Iginlas goal that put Boston up 2-0 with 12:01 left in the second period. “Its always good when they get a chance and you make a save and then your team scores right after that,” Rask said. “That was a good sign.” Rask made 27 saves against the road-weary Canucks, who were coming off 2-0 loss in Detroit the night before and dropped their fifth straight. Sedin and his twin brother, Henrik, extended their goal-scoring droughts to 17 games. “Me and Danny have got to step up and score goals. Thats No. 1. Thats the difference right now,” said Henrik Sedin, who returned to the lineup Monday night after missing six games with an upper-body injury. “Weve got to be the difference-makers and were not right now.” Raphael Diaz scored the only goal for Vancouver, pulling the Canucks to 2-1 on a slap shot with 8:32 left in the second period. Luongo stopped 29 shots for Vancouver and tried to take responsibility after the Canucks lost for the sixth time in seven games. “I think this ones 100 per cent on me. I wasnt too good out there tonight,” he said.dddddddddddd. Canucks coach John Tortorella, in his second game back from a 15-day suspension, thanked Luongo for the sentiment, but said Vancouvers struggles go much deeper. “I appreciate Louie saying that, but this is a team thing here that were going through and well go through it together,” Tortorella said. The Canucks kept it close until Paille scored on a breakaway late in the second period, then Boston controlled the final 20 minutes for its sixth win in seven games. “Weve been in a pretty good stretch. Weve had a goal leading up until the Olympic break to try and go in the right way,” Iginla said. “We have two left, then some of the guys will go and well enjoy watching them.” Vancouver had won the last two meetings since the Bruins beat the Canucks in seven games in the 2011 Stanley Cup finals. Boston appeared to take a 3-1 lead just 2:21 after Diaz scored, but Brad Marchands goal was waved off after officials ruled Bostons Torey Krug interfered with Luongo. The goalie immediately protested and gave Krug a shove, which led to a crowd in front of the net but nothing further. Luongo had no argument after the next goal. Paille took a long pass from Johnny Boychuk at the blue line for a breakaway and beat Luongo on a backhand with 2:54 left in the period. Rask stopped a pair of short-handed chances during Bostons first power play, then Daniel Sedins breakaway in the second that led to the Bruins second goal. Zdeno Chara slipped a crossing pass to Iginla for a one-timer past Luongo on the glove side with 12:01 left in the second. Lucic, who gave Boston a 1-0 lead 5:12 into the game, also got an assist on the play. NOTES: Iginlas assist on Lucics goal was the 600th of his career. … Diaz made his Vancouver debut after he was obtained from Montreal for forward Dale Weise on Monday. … The Bruins improved to 27-3-0 when leading by two or more goals this season. … Chara played his final game for the Bruins before leaving for Russia to carry Slovakias flag during the opening ceremony at the Winter Olympics on Friday. Fournier was the eighth Griffins shooter and had a chance to win the game after Petr Mrazek came out to stop Abbotsfords Chad Billins. Fournier beat Olivier Roy stick side to clinch the win for the visitors. Teeumu Pulkkinen scored twice, giving him a team-leading 23 goals and four in two games. Calle Jarnkrok had a goal and two assists. Andrej Nestrasil had two assists. Mrazek stopped 31 shots in the win. Max Reinhart had two goals for Abbotsford (33-17-6), who have now lost three straight. Sven Baertschi had a goal and an assist, while Roy made 34 saves in the losing effort. Baertschi opened the scoring on the power play when Ben Streets wrist shot from the point was redirected between Mrazeks legs at 6:11. Pulkkinen tied the game at 16:44. After taking a pass at the blue-line, he stepped into a slap shot from the top of the face-off circle to beat Roy far side for his team-leading 22nd of the year. The 22-year-old Finn gave the Griffins the lead at 3:49. Nick Jensens shot from the top of the circle was deflected by Pulkkinen, cruising through the slot. That was Jensens first professional point. Reinhart tied the game at 16:09, taking a pass from Brett Olson and wiring a wrist shot far side on Mrazek. Jarnkroks power-play goal gave the Griffins the lead heading into the second intermission. Nestrasil found Jarnkrok in the low slot and he beat Roy bar down with just 20 seconds to play. Grand Rapids thought they had doubled the lead eight minutes into the third, but the deflection in front was a high stick and was immediately waved off by referee Trevor Hanson. Reinhart tied the game with just under four minutes to go, redirecting a pass from Baertschi around Mrazeks left pad. Grand Rapids had the best scoring chance in overtime, but Ryan Sproul fired it off the crossbar midway through the extra frame and with 35 seconds to go, Cory Emmerton shot a one-timer from the slot right into Roys crest. Téma: Jak postupovat / us.com/Womens-Rob PORTLAND, Ore. — Sal Zizzo and Brian Umony scored first-half goals to lead the Portland Timbers to a 2-0 win over Club Atletico Independiente of Argentina in a friendly Tuesday night. The win was Portlands first on its home field in nine games, a stretch that includes five Major League Soccer and four exhibition matches. The last time the Timbers won at Jeld-Wen Field was May 21 against Columbus. The Timbers (6-10-3 MLS) are 1-3 in exhibition matches this season. “In the first half, they were the superior team,” Independiente coach Antonio Mohamed said of the Timbers. Independiente, of the Argentine Primera Division, has won 16 international championships during its existence and is considered one of the worlds most successful club teams. Coming off a 1-0 loss at Columbus last Saturday, most of the Timbers starters rested against the Argentina opponent. Nonetheless, Portland dominated the first half, as the Timbers produced a number of quality scoring opportunities, two that led to goals. “I thought every player we had on the field, especially in the first half, looked like a quality player,” Portland coach John Spencer said. Portland took a 1-0 lead during the 36th minute when Zizzo streaked down the right side of the field and kicked a 15-yard shot past Independiente goalie Hilario Navarro. Three minutes later, the Timbers struck with a beautiful goal off a set play 35 yards from the goal. Mike Chabala crossed the ball just inside the top of the penalty box, where Umony sent a header over Navarro and into the goal for a 2-0 Portland lead. Chabala, a defender acquired in a trade with Houston last Thursday, made his Timbers debut against Independiente. “For me, (the assist) wasnt the important part. Its the shutout, and showing the guys I can contribute to the team,” Chabala said. The Timbers have had trouble holding leads during their recent home-field slide. Last week in an exhibition against West Bromwich Albion, Portland built a 2-0 halftime lead, only to lose 3-2 in stoppage time. “Were tired of losing games. When you put your uniform on, it means something,” Spencer said. “At halftime, you could tell from the guys look in their eyes that they werent going to it slip.” Independiente threatened to score a couple of times during the second half. CAIs best chance came during the 85th minute on a set play just outside the penalty box, but Julian Velaquezs kick was turned away by Portlands defensive wall. Missing from the Timbers was midfielder Jack Jewsbury, who will participate Wednesday night for the Major League Soccer all-star team against Manchester United in New Jersey. Portland resumes MLS play Saturday with a home match against Toronto FC. . Téma: Jak postupovat / on. Seven plays and 52 yar VANCOUVER — As the Vancouver Whitecaps season comes to a disappointing end Sunday, Sam Adekugbe will offer some hope for the future. The 18-year-old Calgary product is slated to make his Major League Soccer debut, as a starter or substitute, when the Caps (12-12-9) close out their campaign, after missing the playoffs, against the visiting Colorado Rapids (14-10-9.) “If I do start, itll definitely be exciting,” said Adekugbe, a defender who came up through the Whitecaps youth program and signed with the MLS squad in August. “I think its every kids goal to debut as a professional as young as possible.” Adekugbe, who was born in London and lived in Manchester until age nine before moving to Calgary, gets the opportunity to play due to left fullback Jordan Harveys suspension for yellow-card accumulation. “Growing up, you talked about how exciting it would be to make your debut at 18 because, growing up in England, you see a lot of kids making their debut at 18,” said Adekugbe. “So if I get to do this in Canada, its going to be an exciting possibility.” Adekugbes debut coincides with the final game of Vancouver defender Young-Pyo Lees distinguished career. Lee, who represented his homeland of South Korea in three World Cups and won titles in his home country, England, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia, has announced his retirement and will remain with the Whitecaps for at least two seasons to learn about sports administration. “I learned so many things the last two years,” said Lee, 36. “It is, someone (said), another world for me about sports.” South Korean media are expected to give extensive coverage to his swan song and he hopes to use the game as a chance to say “thank you” for the support he has received from fans. Meanwhile, the rest of the Caps will use the contest as a chance to show that all is not lost even though the club missed the playoffs after being near the top of the Western Conference standings before a summer swoon. “Im really excited about it, because we can have two 18-year-olds out there and another player whos come through our system (Adekugbe and Kekuta Manneh),” said embattled Vancouver coach Martin Rennie, whose future with the team is expected to be determined next week. “Were just really starting to see the benefit of all the hard work that the clubs done for many years, and the clubs poised to be really good, and its because of these young guys coming through.” Rennie noted the Whitecaps have achieved many of their aims this season, including: new highs for wins, points and goals; first victories over Seattle, New York, and Los Angeles; and a Cascadia Cup crown for the best in-season record in games between Seattle, Vancouver and Portland. The coach hopes to get an opportunity to stay on for a third season and keep building a club that he guided to the playoffs in 2012. “I know that this team can go on and be a really strong team that contends for titles,” he said. “I also know how long it takes to build a team to do that, and its not an overnight process. Its not a one-year process. Its not even a two-year process.” But before facing the inevitable changes that will come, the Whitecaps want to excel against the Rapids, who beat the Caps 3-2 last weekend to extinguish Vancouvers flickering post-season hopes. “For a long time, we had the best record at home in MLS and then we had a spell where we didnt do as well as we had been doing before,” said Rennie. “We need to finish on a high.” Captain Jay DeMerit, who refuses to view the season as a failure despite the teams exclusion from the playoffs, said this is a time for the Caps to reflect on their campaign and put together one final triumph. “We all look at it as: This will be the last game where all these guys are here,” he said. “So we need to make sure that we get the most out of it.” DeMerits contract is expiring, but president Bob Lenarduzzi has indicated the team wants to re-sign him after he made a strong recovery from a torn Achilles tendon suffered in the first game of the season. Goalkeeper Joe Cannon, 38, who started the campaign as No. 1 but was relegated to No. 3 and has not played since a win over L.A. on May 11, is not expected to get a new deal. Lenarduzzi and Rennie indicated in mid-season, when the team signed new No. 1 goalkeeper David Ousted, that Cannon would not be brought back in 2014. Cannon hopes to keep playing somewhere next season. “Its been great to have seen this organization from day one and grow to what its become,” he said. "But, obviously, its a bit bittersweet. “I think, as a group, we could have achieved a lot more things than we have.” Notes: The fifth-place Rapids have not officially clinched a playoff spot yet, but their chances of being eliminated, with sixth-place San Jose getting in on a tiebreaker instead, are mathematically remote. Pending other results this weekend, a win over Vancouver could enable Colorado to finish as high as second. . The Buckeyes made Penn State pay the price. Braxton Miller passed for three touchdowns and ran for two and Carlos Hyde rushed for 147 yards and two more scores to lead the fourth-ranked Buckeyes to a 63-14 victory over Penn State on Saturday night. “Weve got to keep our foot to the pedal,” said Miller, who completed 18 of 24 passes for a career-best 252 yards before leaving in the third quarter. It was the most points surrendered by Penn State (4-3, 1-2 Big Ten) and its worst beating in 114 years. “Its the worst game Ive experienced,” said Nittany Lions outside linebacker Mike Hull. Meyer said trying to rout an opponent was not what his team set out to do. “It helps,” coach Urban Meyer said of needing to win big to get the attention of those voting in the coaches and Harris polls that are part of the BCS standings formula. “That was not certainly our mindset. Our mindset was to find a way to win this game against a very talented team that we have a lot of respect for that had a lot of momentum coming into this game. … Things usually work out. Id be disappointed if that was our guys focus. Thats not our focus.” But not all of his players felt that way. “We wanted to make a statement,” wide-out Devin Smith said. The Ohio State (8-0, 4-0) victory stretched its nations best winning streak to 20 in a row, two behind the school mark which included the 1968 national championship season. That team was recognized during the opening half as the Buckeyes streaked to a 42-7 lead. Nittany Lions freshman QB Christian Hackenberg bobbled the second snap of the night and it never got much better. He ended up throwing two interceptions. A crowd of 105,889 at Ohio Stadium roared from the outset — and had plenty of reasons. Penn State hadnt given up so many points or been beaten so badly since losing 64-5 to the Duquesne Athletic Club on Nov. 25, 1899. Even Millers backup — Kenny Guiton — rushed for two touchdowns. The Buckeyes dominated all the crucial numbers, totalling a staggering 686 yards (to 357 for Penn State) while rushing for 408 yards on 51 attempts — an average of 8 yards per carry. Bill Belton was one of the few bright spots for the Nittany Lions, gaining 98 yards on 22 carries. It was the most one-sided margin by the Buckeyes and their most points scored in the 29 meetings in the series. The teams had split the last four meetings, with Ohio State holding a cumulative 79-66 scoring advantage. All of those matchups were close. But this one sure wasnt. It got out of hand quickly. “I take full responsibility ffor this loss,” Penn State coach Bill OBrien said.dddddddddddd “We didnt have them prepared good enough as a coaching staff, or me has a head coach. Therefore we didnt play good enough.” The Buckeyes enforced their will on the Nittany Lions on both sides of the ball in an impressive show of strength. Ohio State scored on six of seven possessions in the first two quarters, throwing deep for scores to wide-open receivers and jamming it between the tackles with Miller and Hyde making the most of gaping holes. “Im improving myself and showing what Ive got,” Miller said. “The first half, it went really well: fast, fast, momentum. The game plan worked out.” Miller completed all four of his passes for 65 yards after the opening kickoff before Hyde bulled right tackle for a 2-yard TD. In the only real drama of the game, Penn State manufactured a nice drive in response by mixing Belton runs with Hackenberg passes until faced with a third and 5 at the Ohio State 12. Then Hackenberg tried to thread a pass to tight end Adam Breneman at the goal line, with safety Corey “Pittsburgh” Brown picking off the underthrown attempt to end the threat. After the teams traded punts, the Buckeyes scored on five straight possessions. Miller scrambled right and just tumbled into the end zone behind a block by Devin Smith on a 39-yard scoring run. Two plays later, safety C.J. Barnett jumped a route and intercepted a Hackenberg pass and the onslaught was on. Seven plays and 52 yards later, Miller hesitated after taking the snap and had his pick of routes to the goal line, carrying the final 6 yards to make it 21-0. Hackenberg finished 12 of 23 for 112 yards passing with a touchdown and two interceptions. He carried four times for 21 yards in losses. The final score had to bring a chuckle to former Ohio State coach John Cooper. He took a team ranked No. 21 to Happy Valley in 1994 which was run over by the top-ranked Nittany Lions by a score of — thats right — 63-14. Even though the players werent motivated to roll up a big score to grab voters, Miller said the thought crossed his mind. “We didnt really talk about it, but I was watching games all day on TV,” Miller said. “We cant go out there and predict whats going to happen. We just had a great week of preparation and it turned out well.” Meyer, unbeaten in his 20 games since coming to Ohio State, felt his team did some things it hadnt been able to all year. “I like where were at right now as a team,” Meyer said. “The most impressive part of the game to me was we caused turnovers and we hit the quarterback a little bit. We havent been doing that.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / rl=http://www.wildhockeystore LOS ANGELES — Josh Rutledge began the season at Triple-A before the Colorado Rockies recalled him less than three weeks ago. The little-used second baseman came up big in a key situation on Sunday to help them win another series. Rutledge hit a three-run homer to support Jorge De La Rosas seven strong innings, and the Rockies beat the error-prone the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1 in the rubber game of the three-game set. Colorado was leading 3-1 in the sixth when Rutledge drove Hyun-Jin Ryus 89th and final pitch into the left-field pavilion. Rutledges homer was the 16th of his career, and his first with more than one man on base since his grand slam on Sept. 16, 2012, at San Diego. He came into the game with one RBI in 18 at-bats. “That was a big at-bat by Rut. Obviously, that changes the game there,” manager Walt Weiss said. “Hes not playing every day, but hes working hard and staying ready until he gets an opportunity.” Nolan Arenado had two hits and extended his career-best hitting streak to 17 games |

Téma: Jak postupovat / o the corner board The Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly taking a look at Shawn Marion. The veteran forward was in Cleveland on Monday, according to ESPNs Marc Stein on a recruiting visit with the Cavs. Marion, 36, appeared in 76 games with the Dallas Mavericks in 2013-14 averaging 10.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists. A veteran of 15 NBA seasons, Marion has appeared in 1,106 career games with the Mavericks, Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors, possessing a career free-throw percentage of .811. Marion is a four-time All-Star and won a bronze medal with the 2004 U.S. Olympic team in Athens. He was a member of the Mavericks 2011 NBA Championship-winning team. Stein added that he has been told the Cavs are pursuing Marion “for defensive depth”. wholesale nfl jerseys . The United States-born Fiva, who was eliminated in the first round at the Sochi Olympics, won the final ahead of Tomas Kraus of the Czech Republic, Didrik Bastian Juell of Norway and Christopher Del Bosco of Montreal. Duncan, from London, Ont., won the small final and is clinging to a tight lead in the standings as he aims to become the first Canadian to win a mens skicross Crystal Globe.Despite a stronger start for the Maple Leafs against the Vancouver Canucks – building a 7-1 lead at one point on the shot clock – things didnt look too good until the final 20 minutes. Struggling to generate much offence in the second half of the first period and into the middle frame, the Leafs found their legs in the third period, scoring three unanswered goals to split their season series with the Canucks at a win apiece with a 3-1 victory. “We were pleading, begging, crying, all those things to change the way we were playing and it just seemed that we didnt have our sharpness in terms of making tape-to-tape passes,” said Carlyle. “Then we tried to make plays as individuals in the second period and they just sat back with their 1-4 (formation) and trapped.” But with a chance to head into the Olympic break on a high and post an impressive 11-2-1 record in their last fourteen games, Carlyle asked his team during the second intermission to find twenty inspired minutes. “The idea is that it was a one-goal hockey game, here we have an opportunity to pull a game out of the fire by scoring one goal to give ourselves a chance,” explained Carlyle. “We had a break coming. Wouldnt it be nice for everybody to feel a lot better about ourselves with a win here versus a loss?” Tied with Montreal at 70 points in the Atlantic, the Leafs run has positioned them well for the final 22 games of the regular season, sitting seven points up on the Columbus Blue Jackets for the final Wild Card spot. “We talked about wanting to go into the break I think probably six games ago,” said Dion Phaneuf. “Our focus really focused in on playing well going into the break. We feel weve done that, we got some big wins and we wanted to get as many points as we possibly could going into the break and we did that.” Five Points 1) Burrows Pokes The Bear Alex Burrows drew the ire of Phil Kessel late in the second period, cross checking him near the chin before giving him a glove on punch. Kessel responded with a few shots of his own and was noticeably agitated as he left the ice. But the Leaf sniper responded in the third period with what held up as the game-winning goal along with an assist on James Van Riemsdyks insurance marker. “I dont know, its just a hockey game,” said Kessel, after the game. “I wasnt too happy, but its part of the game." It wasnt the first time, though, this season that Burrows had gone after Kessel. In the previous meeting on Nov. 2, the two players fought in what was only Kessels second career NHL fight. On Saturday, both players received just two minutes for roughing with an extra two minutes going to Burrows for high sticking. “I think Burrows has kind of a mandate to disrupt Phil so its always nice when you come out on the right end of a big game like that and Phil scored a big goal for us,” added Carlyle. 2) Kulemins New-Found Talent Nikolai Kulelmin surprised many by how well he performed playing centre between Mason Raymond and Troy Bodie on Thursday in Tampa. But he showed it was no fluke with another solid outing on that same line against Vancouver. Assisting on Mason Raymonds goal that tied the game 1-1 early in the third period, Kulemin also improved in the faceoff circle going 7-for-16. “There has been kind of an unveiling of Kulemin at centre,” said Carlyle. “Its been a big surprise for everybody.” With Kulemin heading towards unrestricted free agency this summer, it will be interesting to see if his new-found versatility will affect how the Leafs approach the decision they will have to make. Additionally, Carlyle also indicated that David Bolland should be available once the Leafs resume their schedule on February 27th against the Islanders, giving the Leafs a wealth of strength down the middle with Tyler Bozak, Nazem Kadri, Nik Kulemin, Dave Bolland and Jay McClement. 3) Bodie Plays Into Carlyles Good Books Bodie continued to be featured regularly by Randy Carlyle against the Vancouver Canucks, playing 14:13 on a line with Raymond and Kulemin. On Thursday in Tampa, Carlyle suggested that Bodies play has been so strong of late that he felt he owed the Portage Le Prarie native more ice time. “Its a nice vote of confidence,” said Bodie before Saturdays game, regarding Carlyles comment. “Being up and down from the minors, its not the easiest thing to do but to get in the line-up and get some oppportunity and to play well with it, its nice.dddddddddddd To hear it from him (Carlyle) is good too.” Bodie rewarded his coach, assisting on Mason Raymonds tying goal, and tied for the team lead with six hits. “I think just being strong on pucks, getting into fore-checks and being hard on fore-checks,” said Bodie, on what has allowed him to play into Carlyles good books. “Thats really my game, getting in there and just getting pucks back for the skill guys on the line.” 4) JVR and Kessel Excited For Their Olympic Experience Van Riemsdyk and Kessel played a big part in the Leafs come-from-behind 3-1 win but next week, they will be hoping to display that same prowess for Team USA at the Olympics. The two players along with Kulemin will head to Newark on Sunday and then on to Sochi. “Im excited,” said Kessel. “Obviously whenever you get the chance to play for your country its a big honour and Im looking forward to it.” “Its a huge thrill on this stage,” added van Riemsdyk. “One of the highest levels of sport you can play at is the Olympics and to be with a guy I play with day in, day out, it should be fun.” It would stand to reason that JVR and Kessel would play on the same line with Team USA but both indicated they have not been told as of yet who they will be playing with. One thing is for sure though. If they do play together, theyll have to find a new centre to mesh with. “Im excited to watch them play; I think theyre going to do great,” said Tyler Bozak, who said hell be watching his teammates from the Bahamas over the Olympic break. “Its nice that theyre coming into the Olympics really hot. Im Canadian so if Canada and the U.S. play each other, its going to be tough. I dont know who Im going to cheer for yet.” 5) Olympic Break Concerns The Olympic break couldnt come at a better time for the Vancouver Canucks, having lost seven straight. But for the Maple Leafs, the concern for Randy Carlyle is that the break will interrupt the hot streak the Leafs have found themselves on. “It gives us an opportunity to get our team back together and not to drop what weve done now, its to maintain some level of consistency and push for the last 22 games to get ourselves in the best possible position to qualify for the playoffs,” said Carlyle. With four sets of back-to-back games remaining and a five-game road trip that will take them to Anaheim, San Jose, Los Angeles, Washington and Detroit, the schedule will be a grind. “We know that the games are going to get tougher, were going to go out west, play some Western Conference teams, its not going to be an easy schedule that weve got coming,” Carlyle cautioned. “There are no easy ones in the NHL and theyre just going to get tougher when we come back, thats for sure.” He also opted to leave his players with a message he hopes they heed over the break. “The message was ‘the break is here for you to rest and relax but youd be well advised to make sure that you have some form of exercise taking place a few times during the break because when we come back, were going to go to work,” said Carlyle. Injury Update: Jay McClement left in the second period after tangling with Dan Hamhuis, falling awkwardly into the corner boards. He did not return to the game, playing just 5:22. Randy Carlyle confirmed after the game that McClement had a gash over his eye and went to the quiet room. Stats Pack: 11-2-1: Leafs record in final 14 games 100: Career assists for Tyler Bozak; earned it on Phil Kessels goal 14:13: Troy Bodies ice time; second highest among this season 60%: Tyler Bozaks night in the faceoff circle going 12/20 57%: Nazem Kadris night in the faceoff circle going 12/21 7: Losses in a row for the Vancouver Canucks 19: Games since Daniel Sedin last scored a goal 28: Games Alexander Burrows has gone without a goal Quote of the night: “I dont think anyones happy when stuff like that happens, he kind of went after (Phil). I mean its a scrum, theres going to be tons in hockey but I think Phil kind of likes that stuff secretly. It kind of fired him up. They say dont poke the bear and I think they kind of did there. Phil showed it in the third period.” – Tyler Bozak on Phil Kessels skirmish with Alexander Burrows. Ho BARCELONA, Spain — Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets says only “losers” make excuses after Manchester City justified its Champions League loss to the Spanish champions through officiating error. City manager Manuel Pellegrini said referee Jonas Eriksson “decided the game” when he sent off Martin Demichelis before the hour mark of Barcelonas 2-0 first-leg away win in the last 16. Busquets says “referees make mistakes all the time, for and against you. But making excuses for why you lose is for losers.” The Spain internationals comments may provide City with some extra spark ahead of the return leg at the Camp Nou on March 12. And then Tyler Thornton reached out and came up with the only defensive stop the Blue Devils needed. Duke held on to beat Clemson 63-62 Friday night in the ACC quarterfinals after Rodney Hood hit two free throws with 3.8 seconds left and Thornton came up with his timely stop — the only one the Blue Devils managed in the last 5 minutes. “We wouldve lost that game a month ago, I think,” Hood said. ACC rookie of the year Jabari Parker scored 18 points, and Hood had 17 for the third-seeded Blue Devils (25-7). They blew a 13-point lead with 12 minutes left before regrouping just in time to avoid joining No. 15 North Carolina and No. 11 Syracuse as ACC quarterfinal losers. Duke will play seventh-seeded North Carolina State in a semifinal Saturday. Hall scored 13 points to lead sixth-seeded Clemson (20-12), and his runner in the lane with 7.4 seconds left capped a late 15-5 run and gave the Tigers their only lead of the second half at 62-61. After Hoods free throws, Hall made it deep into the lane before Thornton stripped him a moment before the buzzer sounded. “He was coming so fast, and I was just trying not to hit him on the body,” Thornton said. “And then I saw an opportunity to swipe at the ball when he went through, and I hit it.” Clemson coach Brad Brownell and the rest of the Tigers staff erupted when no foul was called. Hall said he was hit “on both sides” by two defenders. “I mean, we wasnt getting calls throughout the game,” Hall said. “So I didnt know how it was going to go out. Just trying to make a play.” Rasheed Sulaimon added 14 points and Amile Jefferson had 13 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who narrowly avoided their third straight post-season loss at the Greensboro Coliseum. They lost their first ACC tournament game here last year to Maryland and before that were memmorably upset by 15th-seeded Lehigh in their NCAA tournament opener in 2012.dddddddddddd All-ACC guard K.J. McDaniels scored 12 points and Jordan Roper added 11 for Clemson, which trailed by nine points with less than 6 minutes remaining before its late run. “In the beginning of the second half, we kind of got a lot of stuff at the rim, and I think we shied away from that,” Parker said. “We didnt really get to the line like we wanted to, and we allowed them to take advantage of our bad shots, and they would capitalize on offence when they got on the breaks because they took advantage of the bad shots we took.” Damarcus Harrison and Hall hit back-to-back 3s to start the burst in which the Tigers scored on seven straight possessions. McDaniels hit a free throw with 47.7 seconds left to pull Clemson to 61-60. When Sulaimon missed a floater with about 15 seconds left, Landry Nnoko pulled down the rebound and kicked it out to Hall — who hurried downcourt and hit his runner in the lane to briefly put the Tigers ahead. Hood then flew right back the other way, drew contact from McDaniels while attacking the basket and hit both ends of a one-and-one for the games final points. “I just got eye contact with him when he got the ball, and I said, Go,” coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “I believe in Rodney. You sink or swim with him, and were still swimming. So thank goodness.” Nnoko finished with 10 points for Clemson, which won the only regular-season meeting — a 72-59 romp in January that dropped Duke to 1-2 in the league and caused a significant amount of soul-searching among the Blue Devils. The Tigers shot 67 per cent in the second half of this one to nearly knock them off again. “I couldnt be prouder of my players to show the resiliency we did throughout the game, especially the second half when it looked like we were dead again,” Brownell said. “Our guys just had a lot of fight. They just kept coming.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / solo homer off Jared Burton. Even with the benefit of a later deadline, Team Canada general manager Steve Yzerman and his staff have less than a month to decide on their roster for the Sochi Olympics. A week could still make plenty of difference in the long run. Now Canada has until Jan. 7 to name its 25-man group with injury replacements still possible. Another week might not make a huge difference in the case of Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos, who is rehabbing from a broken right tibia. It would make all the sense in the world for Team Canada to name Stamkos to its initial roster in case he can return by early-to-mid-February. Where the extra time could really come into play is in helping some players heal up and others show that slow starts dont matter as much as hot streaks. There might not be room for the hottest Canadian-born player in the NHL come early January, but one or two spots being determined by whos on a roll isnt out of the question. Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers would be well served to pick up his offensive production, even though his rebound from a poor start (five goals and 15 assists in 29 games) has him back in the conversation. Problem for Giroux is, as Dallas Stars coach and Canada assistant Lindy Ruff said, the list of players who could make it is still “pretty long.” No one has forced himself into that conversation more so than the Stars Jamie Benn. Playing left wing on the top line alongside Tyler Seguin has brought out the best in Benn, who wasnt invited to Team Canadas Olympic orientation camp in August. Benn said last week in Toronto he naturally used that as motivation, and Ruff said the converted centre was playing “like a possessed player” this season. Benn has seven goals and 19 assists in 28 games, second to only Chris Kunitz of the Pittsburgh Penguins among Canadian left-wingers. Who comes out to make room for Benn might not even be a matter of that player disappointing as much as a numbers game. Kunitzs numbers could have him in the conversation on their own, but his chemistry with Sidney Crosby cant be overlooked. Patrick Sharp of the Chicago Blackhawks brings versatility and the ability to play all three forward positions, but its easy to see him getting bumped at the last minute — or making it only if Stamkos cant go. Rick Nash of the New York Rangers didnt make the last projection while he was out with a concussion. Assuming he stays healthy through early January, Nash is a strong bet to sew up a spot, in this case knocking out Milan Lucic of the Boston Bruins. Jeff Carter of the Los Angeles Kings just returned from an extended absence with a foot injury, so its tough to gauge his candidacy at this point. Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks getting off to such a wicked start helps when Yzerman and Co. look at pure scorers, but it wouldnt hurt to have another one around, especially with Stamkoss status uncertain. On defence, Marc Staals neck injury and what New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault called “symptoms,” could ensure he doesnt make it to Sochi to play with brother Eric, who should be a lock after picking up his production. Staal could be the fourth-best left-handed option Team Canada has behind Chicagos Duncan Keith, Jay Bouwmeester of the St. Louis Blues and sneaky-good Marc-Edouard Vlasic of the San Jose Sharks, but that might not be enough because of the depth of righties. Assuming Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators doesnt experience lingering problems from taking a puck to the face, Alex Pietrangelo of the Blues keeps up his impressive play and Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings stays healthy, the top three on the right side is set. Dan Boyle of the Sharks could be a good veteran to take for his work on the power play, while risk-reward case P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens might prove too good not to take. That would mean three lefties and five righties, but with the ability to dress seven defencemen there was already going to be some imbalance. The place where theres no real fluidity might be in goal. Montreals Carey Price has a 1.95 goals-against average and .938 save percentage and could be called Team Canadas presumptive No. 1 goaltender. Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks (2.34, .916) doesnt have numbers that jump off the page, but he did win gold in 2010 and has the edge over goalies like Mike Smith of the Phoenix Coyotes and Corey Crawford of the Chicago Blackhawks because of that and his body of work. When told his manager referred to him as Minnesotas “igniter” over the past couple of games — during which he homered on consecutive nights — the Twins second baseman looked embarrassed. “The igniter? Oh goodness,” Dozier said Saturday night after hitting a three-run homer that proved to be the game-winning hit in Minnesotas 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Then he was told “The Ignitor” was the nickname for Hall of Famer Paul Molitor, the former Twins player and current coach. “Thats pretty cool. . Ill take it,” Dozier said with a laugh. So will the Twins. Doziers homer in the fifth inning put Minnesota ahead for good, Samuel Deduno tossed six sharp innings for his first win as the Twins moved a game over .500 — a rarity in these parts over the past three years. With Minnesota trailing 2-1, Dozier followed consecutive singles by Aaron Hicks and Eduardo Escobar by sending a curveball from Roenis Elias (3-3) into the seats in left field. It was Doziers 11th homer of the season. “Hes our igniter,” Gardenhire said. “If we can get the bottom of the order to get on base, and roll it over, hes going to come up with more and more RBI opportunities and thats kind of what were looking for, and tonight he delivered.” Dozier had a solo homer on Friday night; Saturday night marked the fifth time in his career he homered in consecutive games. His 20 home runs at Target Field ties him for fourth all-time with former Twins slugger Justin Morneau. He leads the A.L. with 40 runs scored. “My job is to get on base, whether its my hits or anything, on base is my biggest stat,” said Dozier, who extended his current hitting streak to a season-high eight games. Michael Saunders had a homer and two RBIs for Seattle. Deduno (1-2) struck out four, allowed two hits and retired 18 of the 23 batters he faced. Both of Seattles runs off Deduno came in the third inning after James Jones triple scored Brad Miller..dddddddddddd Jones scored on Saunders sacrifice fly to give the Mariners a one-run lead. But Deduno was otherwise solid, working efficiently through Seattles lineup over the next three innings while Elias struggled with his control. Elias allowed six hits and one walk in seven innings, but he also hit a batter, and had a wild pitch and a balk in the second inning. Elias teammates and manager sounded pleased with his performance, even saying his curveball that Dozier homered on was a good pitch. “I went back right after that inning to check where it was and I thought it was a really good pitch,” catcher Mike Zunino said. “(Dozier) just dropped the head on it and was able to elevate it.” Seattle pulled to 4-3 in the eighth when Saunders hit a solo homer off Jared Burton. Corey Hart doubled two batters later, but Burton got Kyle Seager swinging to end the threat. Glen Perkins worked the ninth for his 12th save in 14 chances. The Mariners have lost four straight. “Well figure it out. Its a little tough right now,” Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. “One thing I pointed out right from the start, winning games at this level is tough. One thing here and one thing there will cause you to lose. Well figure this offence out and well be OK.” NOTES: The Twins havent been above .500 since April 27. … McClendon decided to skip RHP Brandon Maurers turn in the rotation for Seattles upcoming two-game series at Texas. Téma: Jak postupovat / lds top-15 ranked team WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Drew Brees stood on the sideline throughout the Saints first scrimmage of training camp on Saturday, resting a strained abdominal muscle on his left side and likely watching with envy as his backups cashed in on the big-play potential of rookie receiver Brandin Cooks. “Hes explosive and hes a guy that, if you can get the ball to him in space, he has a chance to give you some run after the catch — and he did that,” coach Sean Payton said of Cooks, New Orleans first-round draft pick. “Youve just got to keep working with him on a lot of the nuances and specifics of the passing game, but it was good to see him make a few plays.” Cooks racked up more than 100 yards receiving on six catches. His highlights included a twisting, falling catch along the sideline of Ryan Griffins deep pass. Cooks beat veteran cornerback Patrick Robinson on the play, which gained about 40 yards to the 1-yard line. Later, Griffin found Cooks along the sideline, and the receiver stopped suddenly to elude defensive back Rod Sweeting before sprinting nearly 30 yards down the sideline to the end zone. He also had long returns of both a punt and kickoff. The Saints did not make Cooks available after the scrimmage, but teammates unequivocally praised the rookies performance. “Hes electric,” Saints career receiving leader Marques Colston said. “He can run all the routes and hes a big-play guy. … Hes a guy that comes to work every day with the right mindset and I think thats why hes able to be as productive as hes been — and I dont really see a change in that coming.” Saints defenders agreed. “Obviously, today we were going against our offence, so I was quite upset, but its an amazing thing to watch,” outside linebacker Junior Galette said. “Hes everything that we expected him to be so far.” “I see that hes zero to 60 real fast. Thats why we took him with the first-round pick,” inside linebacker David Hawthorne said. “Hes a young guy with a heck of a lot of potential.” Also scoring touchdowns were tight end Jimmy Graham (on a short pass from Luke McCown), as well as running backs Mark Ingram, Travaris Cadet and rookie Derrick Strozier. Ingram scored on a 5-yard run, while Cadet used a hard cutback to his left to score from roughly 25 yards out. Strozier ran in a sweep from about 10 yards. New Orleans running game, which ranked 25th in the NFL last season, thrived in the scrimmage. Ingrams day included a long run through the middle. Right tackle Zach Strief said he can sense the chemistry between the offensive line and ball carriers improving. “Guys are more comfortable with it,” Strief said. “The more confident you are in what you are in what youre doing, the faster youre going to play. And thats the key to this game, you know, how fast can you make the right decisions. … There were some good creases there.” A crowd of more than 4,200 fans filled stands and an embankment along the Saints picturesque training camp fields at The Greenbrier resort in the Allegheny mountains. Some could be heard expressing disappointment when they realized they would not get to see Brees play. Brees was disappointed as well, Strief said, but the star quarterback is expected to recover quickly. “I know its really hard for Drew to stand there and not be in pads and not be with his guys,” Strief said, a playful smirk emerging as he continued to speak. “We do a lot of hugging and make sure hes feeling OK. Ive rubbed his obliques a few times. Im sure thats helped. … The great thing about Drew — you know hes going be in the training room twice as much as anybody, and hes going to get himself right.” Notes: Beside Brees, others sitting out the scrimmage included CB Champ Bailey, S Jairus Byrd, G Ben Grubbs, WR Kenny Stills, NT John Jenkins. While Payton has declined to discuss specific injuries in training camp, he said Bailey should be back soon, adding he doesnt “think its anything serious.” … WR Joe Morgan, trying to make a comeback from a serious knee injury that sidelined him all of last season, saw limited action and made a catch. … Newly acquired S Marcus Ball had an interception of McCown. Téma: Jak postupovat / mens-Jersey/. -- The linebacke TORONTO — She has successfully defended her Olympic gold medal and plans to compete in the 2018 Games, but Kaillie Humphries still has her sights set on achieving yet another goal in bobsleigh: having women take part in the four-man competition. Humphries said she plans to make a proposal this summer to her sports international governing body. The Calgary athlete hopes to help lead the charge by seeking to train and compete with men as the pilot of a four-person sled. “Women dont have four-man — yet,” Humphries said in an interview Friday, sporting her gold medals from the Vancouver and Sochi Olympics. "Were in a situation where women for a lot of years in our sport have always been told that were not as good a pilot, or were not as strong. And I think were at a point where women are proving now that we are just as good…. Were competing on the same level. And so its got to start somewhere. “Were still very much an all-boys club, and were still fairly new,” she added, noting that women first competed in Olympic bobsleigh at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. “But at the same time, youve got the chicken and the egg. Youre not going to get more girls coming in unless you have more events. At the same time, theyre saying you cant have more events until you have more girls.” Humphries said if women arent allowed to start competing in four-man bobsleigh, then maybe she can “join the guys.” “Ill definitely have to have three men behind me in order to be competitive at all, but I feel like that could be a start and a step in a right direction towards encouraging women to come out to the sport, which will hopefully raise the profile a little bit more. And from there, we can hopefully get four-man started (for women).” The 28-year-old acknowledged that it will be an uphill climb, saying shell have to attend driving school and qualify “just like any other mens team would,” adhering to both the Canadian system and international rules. "It will be a long process, it will be a hard one, one that I know Im going to get a few battles over and slack over for sure — but one that Im willing to face. “I feel like Im a great person to at least get the ball rolling. Whether itll happen while Im still in sport, I dont know — but its got to start somewhere.” So could Humphries foreseeably see herself piloting both two-man and four-man sleds in the future? “I wouldnt go forward with it if I wasnt super passionate about it and didnt see it happening,” she said. “Its just whether the federation and everybody else is ready for that to take flight yet. So thats what Ive got to do my best to convince people of.” Humphries is still revelling in the golden glow of earning back-to-back Olympic titles with brakeman Heather Moyse of Summerside, P.E.I. The duo capped off their victory with yet another honour: being chosen as Canadas flag bearers for the closing ceremony. Humphries mom, Cheryl Simundson, was able to attend the Games as part of the “Thank You, Mom” program spearheaded by Procter & Gamble Co., which sponsors the bobsleigh champion. The program honours the role mothers play in helping children achieve their dreams. Simundson became emotional recalling the nail-biting two-minute wait to see Americans Elana Meyers and Lauryn Williams complete their run following the Canadian team. In the end, Humphries and Moyse eked out a victory by a tenth of a second. “We knew that it was close. We knew that they had finished their fourth run and that it was possible, that it was up to Elana to take it or lose it,” Simundson recalled, as her eyes began to fill with tears. “It was all about consistency. At that moment, we knew that they had done their best.” Humphries admitted the pressures were greater heading into the Sochi Games, but said she couldnt approach the event any differently than other competitions. “I try and keep all my races as simple as possible,” she said. "I push as hard as I can and I drive that track the very best that I can, and all my energy and focus goes into that. “If I think about it as the Olympics and your life is built up to this, four years is about this moment its too much.” As has become customary, the heavily tattooed athlete plans to add new ink in commemoration of her Sochi victory just as she did after Vancouver. She plans to have a design of her newest medal tattooed with art from Sochi blended into one piece. Despite thriving under the intense spotlight of competition, Humphries admitted carrying Canadas flag with Moyse at the closing ceremony was fraught with a fresh set of jitters. While no one offered any guidance on how to carry the colours, she recalled a tip she received from British flag bearer Lizzy Yarnold that didnt quite work out as planned. “She said: I think you wave it like a figure eight. So I started doing that as I walked out, and I started hitting other peoples flags and I was like: This is an epic fail. OK, dont do that. Thanks, Lizzy,” Humphries recalled, laughing. Still, the moment in Fisht Stadium was one to remember. “To know that we had our whole country behind us that just completely supported us and to hear it and to feel it from back home … it was unbelievable.” Humphries said while her biggest goal now is “just trying to live in the moment,” her plan is to compete at the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, with hopes of once again piloting to victory |

Carroll received the award from the Professional Football Writers of America on Thursday. The Horrigan Award is given to the league or club official for qualities and professional style in helping the pro football writers do their job. Carroll was recognized for his dealings with the media as Seattle made its run to its first Super Bowl title. He was praised for never being “reluctant to recognize the effort, the dedication, the pain and the hardships attendant to an athletes life.” Hes the second Seahawk to win the award; then-coach Mike Holmgren received it in 2008. Dustin McGowan is front-and-centre in this ongoing saga, having thrust himself into the conversation with a dominating three-inning performance against the Phillies on Thursday, just hours after manager John Gibbons appeared to pour cold water on the notion.BOSTON — Golden State didnt need another winning, last-second basket this time. The Warriors led by at least 20 points throughout the second half and beat the Boston Celtics 108-88 on Wednesday night, showing no letdown one day after edging the Indiana Pacers on a field goal with 0.6 seconds left. Klay Thompson hit that 12-foot turnaround to beat one of the NBAs best teams, 98-96. Against one of the worst, Thompson and David Lee scored 18 points each as the Warriors ended their road trip with a 4-2 record. “This win validates last night,” Thompson said. The Warriors were determined not to ease up against much weaker competition than they faced at Indiana, which has the leagues best home record. “It was big for us,” Lee said. “The starters really wanted to come out and set the tone tonight and not give the Celtics team any life.” That plan worked. The Warriors scored the first six points and led 12-2 with just over five minutes gone as they moved a season-high 14 games over .500 with a 38-24 record. “I read where if we lost this game then that takes away (Tuesdays win). You cannot forget how tough it is to win games in this league,” Golden State coach Mark Jackson said. “Fortunately, we did not fall in love with what we did in Indy.” The Celtics (20-41) provided little resistance and lost for the seventh time in eight games. “It was a struggle for us,” Boston coach Brad Stevens said. “Id like to find something that I could say we were better in, but there wasnt anything.” Former Celtic Jordan Crawford had 15 points and Stephen Curry added 14 for the Warriors, who won for the seventh time in nine games. Kelly Olynyk scored 19 points for Boston. “We dont want to keep embarrassing ourselves and that is the mentality we are going to have,” Jeff Green said. Lee started the scoring with an 18-footer and Andre Iguodala ffollowed with a layup and a dunk for a 6-0 lead.dddddddddddd Jerryd Bayless then hit a fadeaway jumper for Boston, but Golden State got the next six points on dunks by Curry and Thompson and a layup by Lee. The game was still competitive when Bayless two free throws cut Golden States lead to 42-33 with 5:55 left in the first half. Then Thompsons 3-pointer began a 19-7 run that gave the Warriors a 61-40 lead at halftime. Baskets by Lee and Andrew Bogut made it 49-33 before Rajon Rondo sank a free throw and Jared Sullinger made two for Boston. But then Golden State scored the next six points on a short jumper by Lee, a dunk by Iguodala and a 16-footer by Curry. A 3-pointer by Green cut the margin to 55-38, but Curry followed with a 3-point play. Rondo answered with a layup before Iguodala finished the first-half scoring with a 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining. The sloppy Celtics committed 12 turnovers in the first half, leading to 15 points, while the Warriors turned the ball over just twice, leading to two points. “What hurt us more than maybe anything were the turnovers in the first half that led to the dunks that got those guys going,” Stevens said. “I didnt think our effort was great.” The Warriors took their biggest lead, 31 points, when two straight baskets by Thompson made it 80-49 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter. “Theyre hitting their stride a little bit,” Stevens said. Now the Warriors head home for 13 of their remaining 20 games. “We took care of business on the road,” Lee said. “Our thought is we shouldnt lose any more games at home.” NOTES: Golden State has 20 road wins, tied with Oklahoma City for second most in the NBA. … Jackson rested his starters in the fourth quarter. … Rondo had 14 points and seven assists, but also had seven turnovers. … Lee had a game-high 10 rebounds, while Bogut blocked three shots. Téma: Jak postupovat / brook for an 85-81 lead. But W Denny Morrison is having the Olympics of a lifetime. Three days after taking silver in the mens 1,000-metre long track speed skating event at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Morrison has added a bronze to his cabinet, this time in the 1,500 metres on Saturday. “Its been a long road with a lot of persistence and its finally paid off,” an elated Morrison told CBC Sports after the race. Morrison, skating 15th of 20 pairs, capitalized on a strong opening lap to lay down a time of one minute, 45.22 seconds, and was the leader until Polands Zbigniew Brodka topped it for gold in 1:45.00. “What Ive found [in 1,500-metre races] is that I cant go out slow and conservative and try to beat the other guys who finish strong, I have to go out my way – go out fast, and just hang on,” Morrison said. “And I was able to hang on just enough.” There was more drama to come in the final pairing. Dutch skater Koen Verweij finished in a dead heat with Brodka, crossing the line in 1:45.00 as well. When the times were adjusted, Brodka ended up with the gold medal, a mere three thousandths of a second ahead. But it also meant that Morrison had his medal, after an agonizing wait to see if any of the 10 skaters after him could take his place on the podium. “It is [excruciating], you already want to puke,” he said. “Youre already so tired and hurting, but man does it feel good to win [a medal].” Mathieu Giroux of Pointe-aux-Trembles, Que., finished in 19th in 1:47.65. Lukas Makowsky of Regina placed 28th in a time of 1:48.51. Teenager Vincent de Haitre of Cumberland, Ont., was 33rd in 1:49.42. Morrisons bronze puts Canadas medal count at 12, with four gold, five silver, and three bronze. Morrison, Giroux and Makowsky are expected to compete in the team pursuit event next week, as they attempt to defend their gold medal from the Vancouver Olympics. Morrisons efforts have been one of the highlights of the Olympics so far for Canada. Not even scheduled to compete in the 1,000-metres after falling in the event at the Canadian trials, Morrison was given a spot in the race thanks to teammate Gilmore Junio, who gave up his. The Fort St. John, B.C., native fully took advantage of the opportunity, taking silver in the 1,000 metres behind Stefan Groothuis of the Netherlands. Defending Olympic champion Mark Tuitert of the Netherlands finished fifth. American Shani Davis continued his disappointing 2014 Olympic campaign with an 11th-place finish. Canada now has two medals in long track, both from Morrison. The Dutch team has dominated the proceedings at Adler Arena, taking four gold and 13 medals so far in only seven races, matching the record set by East Germany in the 1988 Games in Calgary. With five long track events still remaining, the Netherlands will likely surpass that mark in the coming days. To compare, the other nations have eight long track medals combined. Its a big turnaround for the Dutch team from their Vancouver effort in long track, where it finished well below expectations with three gold and only seven medals total. Consecutive overtime wins makes the needed corrections much easier for Memphis. Mike Conley scored five of his 20 points in overtime, and the Grizzlies beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 98-95 Thursday night to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round Western Conference series. “Obviously, were happy with the win but disappointed at the way we handled that last quarter,” Conley said. “We knew they were going to make runs. We knew theyd keep fighting because thats what they do, and its the playoffs. Theyre going to make runs. Theyre going to make plays. They have two of the best players in the league.” Still, the Grizzlies won their second straight overtime game this time after leading by 17 before going cold for most of the final 7:43 of regulation. Courtney Lee clinched the win, hitting three of four free throws in the final 10.9 seconds of OT. Game 4 is Saturday night in Memphis. The Thunder, who had the NBAs second-best record in the regular season, have to figure out how to shoot better against the team that ousted them in the conference semifinals in five games last year. “We just got to stay together, and we will do that,” Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. “Were down right now in the series 1-2, but just got to focus all of our attention after tomorrows review of the film together as a group and take it all to the next game and do our best to tie it up and take it home 2-2.” NBA scoring champ Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook each scored 30 for the Thunder, who even got another four-point play in the final minute to force overtime. This time, it was Westbrooks turn with 26.6 seconds left. But Durant missed all eight 3-point attempts and was 10 of 27. Westbrook was 9 of 26, though he grabbed 13 rebounds. The Thunder hit only 3 of 12 overall in overtime. “Kevin is really prideful,” Brooks said. “He loves what he does and loves doing it with the guys that hes playing with. He was frustrated a few times with himself missing shots he normally makes in his sleep.” Durant said they have to get easier shots and will figure it out for the next game. “Personally, I think we missed a lot of good looks, some open 3s, some lay-ins, some I wish I could take back,” Durant said..dddddddddddd Zach Randolph scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds for Memphis, which now has won 15 straight at home. Tony Allen, who scored 16 points for Memphis, gave the Thunder one final chance at an improbable play to keep the game alive. After Lee split his free throws with 1.7 seconds left, Westbrook was racing up the right sideline trying to get a shot off before the buzzer. Allen tripped Westbrook, sending him to the line for three attempts. Westbrook hit the first, missed the second and then clanked the third off the rim on purpose. But Ed Davis tipped away the ball to seal the win for Memphis. Marc Gasol scored 14 points for Memphis. Beno Udrih added 12 points, and Lee finished with 10. Serge Ibaka had 12 points for the Thunder, which went 5 of 28 beyond the arc. The Thunder trailed 81-64 in the fourth quarter. Then they scored 17 straight with Westbrooks 3-pointer in the left corner tying it up with 57.3 seconds left, and setting up yet another thrilling finish between these teams. “We got to be better down the stretch is the thing that sticks out,” Allen said. Memphis couldnt protect its lead by going completely cold after a hook shot by Kosta Koufos with 7:43 left. The Grizzlies didnt score again until Allens baseline dunk with 57.3 seconds to go. He then scored on a layup after stealing the ball from Westbrook for an 85-81 lead. But Westbrook made up for his turnover on the next trip down the court. He hit a 3-pointer and dropped to the floor on a hard foul by Allen. His free throw tied it at 85 with 26.6 seconds left. Memphis tried to hold for the late shot, but Conleys one-handed layup clanked twice on the rim before rolling off. Durants 3-pointer for the win missed harmlessly off the backboard, sending these teams into their second straight overtime. In overtime, the Thunder took their first lead since 9-8 on a three-point play by Durant for an 88-85 lead. Téma: Jak postupovat / situation says free-agent pitcher METAIRIE, La. — Saints coach Sean Payton says outside linebacker Victor Butler wont be returning for the Saints playoff push. The chances of Butler returning appeared remote since he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and had surgery in June. Yet New Orleans kept the possibility of Butlers return alive by placing him on the clubs physically-unable-to-perform list rather than on injured reserve. The window for Butlers return to the active roster closed this week. Payton says Butlers rehabilitation has gone “extremely well,” but the club felt it was best to let Butler continue his rehabilitation rather than risk rushing him back too soon. Butler was acquired by the Saints as a free agent after starting his career in Dallas, where he played under current Saints defensive co-ordinator Rob Ryan. Téma: Jak postupovat / til David Steckel bea SANTA CLARA, Calif. — At last, Mario Manningham is back in game-week mode. And that has a far better ring to it than rehab mode given the countless hours he has spent for much of the last year nursing himself back to health following major knee surgery. Manningham walked through the locker room Wednesday, binder in hand and headed for meetings with the expectation that he will play for the San Francisco 49ers (6-2) in Sundays game against Carolina (5-3), even if coach Jim Harbaugh has yet to formally say so. “Mario, hes a receiver whos easy to throw to, so its not going to take much time for him to get back up to speed,” quarterback Colin Kaepernick said. Manningham is on the active roster again nearly 11 months after a knee injury derailed his season and forced him to the sidelines long before the Super Bowl run. Michael Crabtree is back on the practice field six months after he suffered a torn right Achilles tendon that also sent him to surgery. Kaepernick credits both of his star wideouts for returning to their former explosive selves so soon. Such compliments go a long way. “Its important when it comes from your teammates,” Manningham said. “I know I can get better, everybody can always get better. Im trying to take it step by step and do what I can do to make my team look better. Im practicing like Im playing, just trying to make plays and come out with a W.” At the start of practice, the first full session for Crabtree since he was medically cleared Tuesday, he planted hard with his healthy right foot to cut inside on a short route. Between drills, he shuffled his feet in a little jive as Bruce Springsteens “Born in the U.S.A.” blared from the sound system. Crabtree has been doing speed work for a few weeks. “I really just want to get back out there. They really have to calm me down. I was the first person out there today stretching for no reason,” he said. “When I come back Ill let you know if its stronger. Right now Im just trying to get going.” Harbaugh wandered over for a glimpse of the receivers doing their position work. He will be among those to keep Crabtree on task so he doesnt try to do too much too soon. “Good to have him back, 15 reporting eligible,” Harbaugh said earlier, referencing Crabtrees uniform number. “Everybody kind of watches out of the corner of their eyes doing their drills. Its neat to see any player who comes back from a serious injury, understanding the grueling rehab thats taken place, the mental toughness grinding through those rehab sessions. … Hell be on a pitch count.” Just imagine what San Franciscos 32nd-ranked passing game might look like down the stretch with these two back in the offensive mix for Kaepernick to complement Anquan Boldin. Suddenly, San Franciscos players will allow themselves to think about the added big-play potential for a unit already on a nice roll and riding a five-game winning streak in which the team has scored at least 30 points in each victory. “Itll be crazy,” running back Frank Gore said. “Looking back the way guys were playing, especially with Kap and Crab on the field last year and how they were so used to breaking a lot of plays down the field, the running game will be getting easier. Thats big for the team. A lot of teams are playing us with a lot of people in the box. With those guys back out there making plays, with the people who are already making plays — Vernon (Davis), Anquan Boldin, adding Crab, Mario, thats big.” Before his injury last December, Manningham had 42 receptions for 449 yards and one touchdown in 12 games and 10 starts. He injured his left knee in a loss at Seattle Dec. 23 then underwent reconstructive surgery to repair torn anterior cruciate and posterior cruciate ligaments. Crabtree, the teams 10th overall pick in the 2009 draft out of Texas Tech, established career highs last season with 85 receptions for 1,105 yards and nine touchdowns. Then Crabtree sustained the injury during 7-on-7 drills in an organized team activity May 21. Manningham is likely to make his season debut for the 49ers in Sundays home game against Carolina. Crabtree shouldnt be more than a couple of weeks behind him. In Crabtrees case, the 49ers have slightly less than three weeks before they must activate him. “I had the math since the surgery, five months, 27 days as of Sunday, so five months, 30 days, today,” Harbaugh said. “Surprised? I dont know the surprise there, I guess because you watch them day to day. Successful surgery, on track at every point, doing everything he was asked to do by the doctors. All reports were really good.” . Foye scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter against his former team, leading the Clippers to a 102-84 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night. “Foye was outstanding, and were going to need that from him,” point guard Chris Paul said. "Tonight he hit some very timely threes that gave us some separation. Ive known him for years and I used to play against him when he was in Minnesota. “Foye was one of those guys who used to give us fits because hes such a good player. I think at times, hes better than he thinks he is. He can handle the ball, hes big and strong and athletic, and he can shoot it. So we just need him to keep getting his confidence.” Blake Griffin had 23 points and 15 rebounds, Caron Butler added 21 points and the Clippers increased their lead in the Pacific Division to two games over the idle Lakers with their ninth victory in 12 contests. Paul had 16 points and nine assists. Coming off a 96-92 loss at Dallas in which Foye 0 for 7 from the field, the Clippers took an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter before John Wall cut it to 75-72 on a 16-footer with 10:12 remaining. But Foye completely took during the next 3 1/2 minutes, after missing all four shots in 26 minutes over the first three quarters. The six-year veteran, who spent the 2009-10 season with the Wizards before signing with the Clippers as a free agent in July 2010, started his one-man assault with a three-pointer, then made two free throws and hustled after an offensive rebound to set up another three by Mo Williams. Foye made two more free throws and capped his run with a three-pointer that made it 88-76 with 6:59 to play. From then on, it was no contest. “Mo drove and then he found me on the left wing, and I just let it go,” Foye said. “I didnt shoot too well in Dallas, and I was upset with myself. So I got here early and took some shots trying to get myself going. I didnt shoot too well early on, but once I hit a shot, I felt good.” The Clippers have beaten the Wizards seven consecutive times — including a double-overtime win last March at Staples Center in which Griffin had 33 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists in a career-high 51 1/2 minutes for his first NBA triple-double. The Clippers longest winning streak against any club is 11 against Dallas from 1992-1994. Wall and JaVale McGee led Washington with 18 points each. The Wizards, coming off their second straight road win after an 0-10 start, werent able to sustain their momentum following Tuesday nights 124-109 victory at Portland. “We did a great job managing the game, running pick(equals)-and-rolls and getting everyone involved,” Wall said. “Its tough to play them because they can play defence, run and score.” Former USC guard Nick Young missed his first nine shots and finished 5 for 18 with 14 points after getting a season-high 35 against the Trail Blazers. “We wanted to make him as uncomfortable as possible. That was the plan,” Foye said. “You cant just let him stand out there and take target practice.” Young ended his field goal drought with a three-pointer that trimmed the Clippers lead to 56-55 with 7:19 left in the third quarter and made two more from behind the arc in a 1:19 span to put Washington back in front 60-58 with 5:57 left in the period. “My teammates were encouraging me all night long, and I tried to get it going in the second half,” Young said. “It was just one of those nights. We played hard and fought, but it was back-to-back games, and they made a push in the fourth quarter.” Rookie forward Jan Vesely threw down an uncontested dunk that gave the Wizards a 62-60 edge with 5:07 left in the third. But he returned to the bench 15 seconds later after picking up his fifth foul, and Griffin gave the Clippers the lead for good with a back-to-back dunks to make it 70-66. The first came after his offensive rebound of Foyes missed three-pointer, the other off an alley-oop lob by Paul with 2:47 left in the quarter. Notes: Howard Eisley, a player development assistant with the Clippers who sits right behind their bench during games, was fined $15,000 by the NBA on Wednesday for verbal abuse of an official. The incident took place at the end of the Mondays 96-92 loss at Dallas. “It was kind of unexpected, but the league felt it was warranted — and the rules are strict,” coach Vinny Del Negro said. … Paul received a technical foul with 1:59 left in the second quarter, the 32nd called against Clippers players and coaches this season. They have yet to have anyone ejected from a game with two, but Paul came close 39 seconds later after fouling Wall. … The game featured the first overall pick in three drafts: Griffin (2009), Wall (2010) and Kenyon Martin (2000). Martin made his home debut with the Clippers, playing 23 minutes and getting four points and four rebounds in his fifth game with the club after signing as a free agent Feb. 3. Wholesale Soccer Jerseys . “I cant say much, we agreed not to say much, but talks are ongoing and Andrei wants to stay in Montreal,” agent and former NHL player Sergei Berezin told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on ESPN.com on Friday. “Well see where it goes. Hes played 13 seasons with Montreal. ”http://www.worldcupjerseys.us.com/">http://www.worldcupjerseys.us.com/. The Texas Rangers quickly got even, and the right-hander felt like he was starting over when he got back on the mound. . Atletico built a provisional three-point advantage over Barcelona before the defending champion hosts Elche on Sunday. Barcelona then visits Atletico in the following round. “We will have to wait and see if Barcelona wins tomorrow to stay leader, as it is accustomed to doing,” Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. Cheap Jerseys . A stick in the gut prevented him from getting off a clean drive, but it earned him the first penalty shot of his career. He converted, and Patrice Bergeron also scored a short-handed goal on Thursday night as the Bruins opened the defence of their Eastern Conference championship with a 3-1 victory over the Lightning. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Houston Astros got a good glimpse of what could happen if Chris Carter and George Springer are hitting well at the same time. Carter connected for two home runs, Springer set a rookie club record for homers in a month and the Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 9-3 Wednesday for their fifth straight win. The Astros have been waiting for Carter to take off after he hit 29 home runs last year. “This guy led our offence in home runs and RBIs last year. He had been hot and cold, but we all know when hes hot, he can carry a ballclub because weve seen him do it,” Astros manager Bo Porter said. “We definitely would love to get him going. That would be an added boost to our team,” he said. Carter, who had been benched the previous three games with a .192 batting average, homered to lead off the fifth. He hit a three-run homer in sixth off reliever Louis Coleman for his fourth career multihomer game and his first this season. “He sat for three days, worked extremely hard in the cage and watched a lot of video,” Porter said. “He came in today with a good game plan and understanding the things in which hes worked on the last few days.” “I always say this: Its good from a coaching standpoint you put in effort with a guy and the next time he gets in the lineup you see it pay off. Thats good for the player to see the immediate results of the work which hes putting in” he said. Springer homered off Danny Duffy (2-5) in the first for his ninth home run in May. Glenn Davis held the Astros rookie record with eight home runs in September 1985. Springer also walked twice and was hit by a pitch. “Our offence is better,” Carter said. “Its been coming around really good. George has six home runs in six games. Im happy for him. I think we have something going here.” The Astros, with the worst record in the AL, won three times in Kansas City for their first sweep of the season. Houstons winning streak is its longest since a siix-game string that ended last June 3.dddddddddddd The Royals have lost four in a row. “Its just a bad series, unfortunately, it happened at home,” Royals designated hitter Billy Butler said. “Its a tough go right now.” Carlos Corporan had three hits with a walk. He drove in a run as the Astros outscored the Royals 21-5 in the series. Jarred Cosart (4-4) gave up one earned run and four hits in five innings, but was pulled when his pitch count reached 95. “I chose a good day to go five and the offence scored nine runs,” Cosart said. “I didnt have my best stuff. The offence came out scoring early. I felt pretty good out there. I had a couple of innings with high pitch counts. We have a five-game winning streak going. Weve got momentum. Were going back home to our own ballpark.” Duffy allowed six runs on seven hits and five walks in four-plus innings. The first four Royals pitchers combined to walk 10, which was a season high. “He just didnt have anything going for him today,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “His fastball was down to 88-92 (mph) and we kept checking and asking if he was OK. He was fine, but he was going through a little dead arm. He was throwing hard, but it just wasnt coming out. We had to kind of ride it. We didnt have any bullpen help.” Brett Hayes singled in the Kansas City fifth to snap an 0-for-27 skid to begin the season. He homered in the seventh, the Royals first home run in nine games. NOTES: Houston 2B Jose Altuve dropped Eric Hosmers popup to shallow right in the sixth inning for his first error of the season. That ended an Astros record of 88 errorless games by a second baseman. Altuve also had a single and tops the majors with 73 hits. … Butler grounded out four times and is in a 2-for-22 funk, tumbling his average to .235 with one home run. … Royals LF Alex Gordon batted third for the first time this season and extended his hitting streak to six games with a first-inning single. Téma: Jak postupovat / er Charles Bronfman s Day 11 in 100 words or less We must remember that people are seeing a World Cup for the first time, just dont tell them it isnt always like this. Many of those eyes are in the United States of America, a country that the sport has wanted on its side for some time. On Sunday the football Gods delivered once again, only this time it was time for good old USA to experience as much heartache as joy. Portugal 2-2 USA Football is a funny old game. Last week the USA struggled to keep the ball, were not at their best, and still won. This time they treasured the ball far better, were absolutely outstanding, and didnt win. This World Cup has been an absolute blockbuster and some of its main characters have been counter-attacks, comebacks, headers, and substitute goals. All four starred together in an incredible last scene in Manaus. Portugal were on the ground, seemingly knocked out in Brazil, flat out on their back with the referee standing over them about to wave his arms and end their misery. They knew they were out of the fight. Angry, petulant, disappointed they were a wounded bunch. Then, like a boxer swinging one last right hook at an opponent just for the sake of it, they delivered a stunning final moment to another monumental match in Brazil. The clock read 94:25. Michael Bradley picks up the ball and has no outlets to pass the ball to. Eder, the Portugal striker who came on early in the first half finally did something valuable by making a crucial tackle. 94:28 – Nani counters with pace, looks up and sees Cristiano Ronaldo on the right side. It was the first time the talisman was in that zone where he could put a pass in. (stats powered by Opta) 94:31 – Ronaldo had just enough time to take one touch, look down at the ball, look up and deliver an absolutely incredible cross. 94:33 – Silvestre Varela then runs into the box and delivers a powerful header into the mix. The USA victory and place in the last 16? Gone in eight seconds. It was a fitting dramatic finale to an enthralling game in the Amazon. It will be remembered for the final scoreline, the Ronaldo pass, and the USA comeback, but we shouldnt forget about the tempo. The game was stretched throughout, played at an incredible pace in exhausting conditions. Watching it we learned many things. We learned that Portugal have very little depth. Anyone who has followed this small, yet proud football nation would tell you they already knew that but this exposed it even deeper. Anyone who criticizes Ronaldos performance would be best served to look at what he had to work with. They lost Helder Postiga early, threw on Eder and effectively played with 10 men for the second successive match. The sight of the worlds finest player having to play up front in the second half and get absolutely no service was an all too familiar one. A sad tale of what could have been. Nani scored a goal but was very disappointing the rest of the way, giving the ball away far too much. Joao Moutinho is a special player but his sparring partners, Miguel Veloso and Raul Meireles are not at the form of Euro 2012. Theyve been hammered by injuries, admittedly, but this was one of the worst showings by a Portugal team in two decades. Last week they could blame Pepe and a brilliant German attack. On Sunday their excuses ran out and they will likely fly home on Friday as another European team humbled in Brazil. Jurgen Klinsmanns team were by far the better side and will be happy to be on four points through two games but it is far from job done. Indeed, it could turn out to be what might have been. Sure, Jurgens new mates and old mates can kick a ball around for 90 minutes in Recife on Thursday and both go through but anyone who thinks Germany would agree to that are kidding themselves. Germany are in Brazil to win the World Cup, not risk playing a close game with an inferior country, where a bad bounce or poor decision could end up costing them the chance to progress or, even, win the group. If the game is even as it enters the final 25 minutes I could see the two teams defending deep and giving up very little but until then I expect Germany to use the game as an opportunity to get back the tempo and attacking guile that was missing against Ghana. Belgium 1-0 Russia The 2014 World Cup has been billed by some as the greatest ever but then Fabio Capello arrived in a time machine from 2010 to remind us just how easy a game can be killed off. It almost worked. To be fair, the dullest game of the tournament so far was not all Russias doing. An average Belgium defended deep and rarely got playmaker Eden Hazard into the game, looking to settle for a point they know would have helped them win the group. The schedule makers also played a small part in the snoozefest. Every team in this World Cup, Mexico vs Brazil aside, had four or five games off in between group games but all the teams who played on Sunday play again on Thursday, giving them just three days off before a crucial group finale. Thankfully, Belgium decided to find some extra gears in the last ten minutes and for the second successive match their changes made a difference. Substitute Kevin Mirallas got the best out of Hazard and the two combined on the goal, scored by another sub, 19-year-old striker Divock Origi. The extra gear found by Belgium showed, again, they can reach another level when required and also left Russia embarrassed that they couldnt. Russia were organized and clearly had a game plan that almost worked and it is hard to be too critical of that based on that game but the bigger question mark over this teams methods is do they have it in them at all to play a more open, expansive style that will be needed against Algeria to progress? This World Cup has made a mockery of players and coaches who have tried to play like it was 2010. Capello gets one last shot to prove otherwise, against Algeria. How did that work out for him in 2010? South Korea 2-4 Algeria Missed by many, this was a fantastic game. Algeria are a real threat to Russia. They are strong in attack, have a fine, technical leader in Sofiane Feghouli who can glide by midfielders and can score. Admittedly, South Koreas defending in the first half was woeful but Vahid Halilhodzics side deserve tremendous credit for sensing their opportunity to finish the game off early. It has been a good couple of days for African football. Man of the day Nominees…. Vincent Kompany – on a day where most of his teammates were average, the Manchester City skipper was fantastic in the middle of the Belgian defence. Islam Slimani – he got his first start at the World Cup and it wont be his last after he tormented the South Korean backline. Clint Dempsey – talk about a big game player. Not blessed with any one outstanding trait, he just seems to pop up in big moments. Jermaine Jones – After a brilliant display on the left of a midfield diamond against Ghana, he was asked to come more centrally this time and had a superb match. Cristiano Ronaldo – he was far from his best but, just like Lionel Messi on Saturday, he had his moment. Winner Cristiano Ronaldo – a defensive liability in the first half, clearly not fit, playing with a bunch of average players, sulking and then he does that. Wow. Whats next Australia vs Spain & Chile vs Netherlands (12pm/9am) Croatia vs Mexico & Brazil vs Cameroon (4pm/1pm) Burning question for Mondays games Can Chile win the group and finally carve open a path to the late rounds that doesnt include nemesis Brazil? Stat of day 11 Silvestre Varela became the 16th substitute to score at this World Cup. jerseys from china . Brooks and Harrison, along with tackle Walter Jones and coach Tony Dungy, were the first-year eligible candidates to make the cut from 126 to 25. Brooks won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay, while Harrison and Dungy were champions with Indianapolis. cheap jerseys from china . No way, absolutely no way. If you do, where do you go from there? If you want to progress as a team and as a club you have no chance if you sell players like that. http://www.cheapjerseyssafe.com/. A Los Angeles judge on Thursday said the case wont finish by Tuesday but will continue on July 21 because some lawyers for team owner Donald Sterling have personal plans. Sterling is suing to block his wifes unilateral deal to sell the team to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. wholesale nfl jerseys . Make that 2-40 now. Tony Gwynn Jr. led off the ninth with a walk against Miami closer Steve Cishek and later scored, Ben Revere added the go-ahead run when Miami second baseman Donovan Solano bobbled a potential double-play grounder and the Phillies rallied past the Marlins 5-4 Thursday night to snap a six-game losing streak. cheap jerseys . The executive board of the Major League Baseball Players Association voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint Clark to replace Michael Weiner, who died Nov.Major League Baseball may one day return to Montreal, but that day will not be coming any time soon, according to Bud Selig. Speaking with TSNs Michael Farber, the commissioner said that while franchise relocation and expansion is not currently being considered, the sour ending of baseball in Montreal would not keep the city from being awarded a franchise in the future. “With the 30 teams, you know we just went from 15 to 15 in scheduling, that was a very complicated process so there are really no expansion plans at all,” he explained. “Fortunately, we dont really have any club that wants to move right now and havent for a long time. Its my last year and I cant, in the foreseeable future, see any expansion.” Selig didnt rule out the possibility of Montreal landing a franchise again in the future, but added that one of the key steps would be getting a new stadium. “The first thing you need, and this has been true everywhere, even in existing places, is to build a stadium that can produce the kind of revenue you need today to compete,” he said. “This is a sport now that is at an all-time high in popularity and revenue and everything else, but teams do generate a lot of revenue to compete and without a new ballpark, its not possible. So the first condition everywhere is to have a new ballpark.” Selig also noted that having a local owner is crucial in establishing a franchise in a city. “You really need a group with local roots, who understands their market, but is also committed to keeping it in that market,” he added. “Local ownership is vital.” Speaking on the Expos and the series of events that led to their relocation in 2004, Selig said that he did not necessarily believe the sale of the franchise in 1991 was the “death knell” for the Expos, but called it “a sad day for baseball and a sad day for Montreal.” He added that as the team was failing in the early 2000s, he tried to find another owner in Montreaal to keep the team in the city, but couldnt find support.dddddddddddd “(I) spent quite a bit of time, worked a lot with (team president) Claude Brochu, who was very good,” said Selig. “Claude did everything in the world he could, and he was a wonderful citizen when it came to baseball. I know how he felt about Montreal, it just didnt work, but it wasnt for lack of effort. I came up there and we tried and we just didnt get anywhere.” The commissioner also disagreed with the sentiment of some fans that Major League Baseball quit on the city of Montreal long before moving the Expos. “Thats regrettable,” he said. “I dont believe that, in understanding of the historical facts and what happened, justifies that. I dont think MLB ever quit on Montreal. I think what happened, if you asked before and after Charles Bronfman sold the team, you bet I worked a lot with people to try to get permanent ownership and stable ownership but they obviously had a stadium problem. The Montreal people themselves talked about it a lot. So, I really dont think it was a matter of us quitting on Montreal. Montreal was a great part of baseball for all the years Charles Bronfman owned them, we had no reason to go against that in any way. I think we (MLB), every place we have been, we have made a very sincere attempt to really change the situation, and build stability into it, and weve succeeded everywhere else. And we tried in Montreal.” With a decade gone by and the Expos firmly entrenched in Washington, D.C. as the Nationals, Selig added that the sour ending of baseball in Montreal would not keep the city from being awarded a franchise in the future. “The Montreal situation was one that we didnt want to happen, but with no ownership group and the very things that we have discussed here today, we had no choice,” he said. “But as far as Im concerned, if and when that time comes, and there is a team, why wouldnt Montreal be considered?” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / he plate. He scored on Staff from Canadas three Major League Soccer clubs will congregate in Florida later this week to assess some of the talent that will be available in next weeks MLS SuperDraft in Kansas City. While there is an ever increasing emphasis on clubs developing their own players through academies, the Draft can still provide them with an opportunity to add some valuable pieces to their squad. On the draft floor last year it was Vancouver Whitecaps who were the centre of attention, taking striker Omar Salgado as the first overall pick. This time around it is another Canadian expansion team, the Montreal Impact, who are scheduled to kick things off. Around 65 players will be on show at the Combine which kicks off in Fort Lauderdale on Friday, providing coaches and general managers with a valuable first-hand insight into the talent available. The league has already announced the signing of some of the top prospects in this years class, and the top pick may very well be one of the five players signed to Generation adidas deals. The major bonus with players who have been given these contracts is that they dont count against the salary cap. So when MLS Commissioner Don Garber announces the Impacts top pick (trades permitting) live on TSN2 just after 12 pm ET on January 12, dont be surprised to hear one of the following names pulling on the blue Montreal jersey. Four of the five Generation adidas signings are forwards. Darren Mattocks is a 21-year-old Jamaican who scored 39 goals in 47 matches for the University of Akron and was part of their College Cup-winning squad in 2010. Hes a member of Jamaicas U-23 squad. Sam Garza is a 22-year-old who split his college career between the University of Denver and UC Santa Barbara. He was on the United States squad for U-20 World Cup qualifying in 2009. Chandler Hoffman led the UCLA Bruins in scoring in 2011 with 18 goals, helping his team make it to the College Cup semifinals. Andrew Wenger is a forward from Duke. The 21-year-old is a MAC Hermann Trophy Finalist who was named 2011 ACC Offensive Player of the Year. The fifth Generation adidas signing is UCLA midfielder Kelyn Rowe who hails from Federal Way in Washington and has represented the United States at youth level. Along with the anticipation of clubs snagging some of the top young talent coming out of the College game, the SuperDraft is also a time when teams are inclined to trade players as they continue to assemble their roster ahead of training camp. Throughout Mo Johnstons reign as General Manager with Toronto FC, the SuperDraft always presented many opportunities for deals to be done, often involving the trading of picks. Even without Johnston around it was no different in Baltimore a year ago when Toronto traded striker Chad Barrett to Los Angeles Galaxy on the morning of the Draft, and goalkeeper Jon Conway headed to Chicago later in the day as Aron Winter attempted to create room under the salary cap to bring in new players. Ahead of this years SuperDraft, Toronto FCs management team have had much more time to prepare. This week sees Winter, Paul Mariner and Bob de Klerk pass their one year anniversary mark in charge of the club. They do however still enter the New Year with a number of holes in their squad. The Reds have so far added speedy winger Reggie Lamb and defender Jeremy Hall to their ranks but still require some significant additions throughout the team. There also remain questions surrounding the futures of last years loan signings Richard Eckersley and Joao Plata. On the other side of the country, Vancouver Whitecaps are also in need of further additions, although they have already been busy during the off-season transforming their roster under new head coach Martin Rennie. Rennie has been watching potential targets in the U.K. over the last couple of weeks whilst spending the holidays back in his native Scotland. With the arrival of Young-Pyo Lee the Whitecaps have added an important piece in defence, but Rennie is still working on options to make his team more solid at the back, including the possibility of adding a ball-winning defensive midfielder. With pre-season training camps opening before the end of the month, the Whitecaps, Toronto FC and Montreal Impact all have a busy few weeks ahead to kick off the New Year. Along with their participation in the Combine and SuperDraft, off-field preparations will also be able to take a step forward in the next few days with the release of the full 2012 MLS schedule. cheap nfl jerseys . “First, I would like to offer my deepest and sincerest apologies for any harm I have inflicted on University of Missouri defensive lineman, Michael Sam,” the statement read. The 36-year-old announced his retirement on Friday after having played in Montreal, Los Angeles, Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Columbus and Tampa Bay.WASHINGTON — Anthony Rendon doubled twice and drove in three runs, and the Washington Nationals opened a six-game homestand with a 6-5 victory over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night. Ryan Zimmerman added two doubles and two RBIs as Washington snapped a four-game losing streak. Tanner Roark (6-4) pitched five innings in winning his third straight start. Rafael Soriano worked the ninth for his 14th save. Houstons Jose Altuve returned to the lineup, going 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs. He was limited to one pinch-hitting appearance in the last three games after being hit on the right hand by a pitch. Houston trailed 6-1 before scoring four in the eighth off Tyler Clippard, the last two on a double by Altuve, who is hitting .370 (17 for 46) in June. Dallas Keuchel (8-4) came in 6-1 with a 1.33 ERA over his last seven starts, but struggled with his command. He allowed four earned runs on six hits and a season-high four walks, while striking out four in five innings. It was the shortest outing since April 5 for Keuchel, who tied his season high in runs allowed while picking up his first road loss. Houston has lost three of four overall and 11 of its last 12 against Washington. Keuchel was lifted after throwing 105 pitches. Roark tossed 95 on a night when the game-time temperature was 92 degrees. Roark gave up seven hits and walked two, but minimized the damage when the Astros loaded the bases on three singles leading off the fourth. After Roark fanned Jason Castro, Matt Dominguez hit a grounder that deflected off Roarks foot into right field, scooring Altuve to pull Houston within 4-1.dddddddddddd Roark rebounded to get Jonathan Villar on a fly to shallow left before striking out Robbie Grossman. Washington, which managed just four runs in its four straight losses, scored four in three innings against one of the leagues hottest pitchers. Denard Span broke a 0 for 18 skid when he opened the first with an infield hit on a bouncer off the plate. He scored on Rendons double to the wall in right centre. With one out, Zimmerman doubled to drive in Rendon and make it 2-0. The Nationals doubled their lead in the third. With two outs, Zimmerman doubled home Jayson Werth, who had walked. Zimmerman scored on a single by Ian Desmond. Rendon made it 6-1 when he doubled in two runs off reliever Kyle Farnsworth in the sixth. NOTES: Washington OF Bryce Harper took two-handed swings Tuesday for the first time since injuring his left thumb April 25. Manager Matt Williams said Harper hit soft toss pitching in the indoor batting cage Tuesday and the goal is to evaluate him on the field this week. Williams pointed to “beyond July 1” for Harpers return. . Houston manager Bo Porter coached third base for the Nationals from 2011-12. Tuesday was his first visit since Washington dropped the decisive Game 5 of the 2012 NL Division Series to St. Louis after leading 6-0. “It hurt,” he said of that loss. “I would say it still hurts.” . Nationals LHP Gio Gonzalez (3-4, 4.62) returns Wednesday from the 15-day DL (shoulder inflammation) and opposes RHP Scott Feldman (3-4, 3.98). Téma: Jak postupovat / and they only score one off hi Continuing with the subject of “The Russian Five”, they are worth reviewing as well. The group of Slava Fetisov, Igor Larionov, Vladimir Konstantinov, Sergei Fedorov, & Slava Kozlov were a dominant force for The Wings at one point in the 90s. Reyes hit a two-run triple to give New York the lead in the seventh inning and the Mets held on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Tuesday night. “Ive never had a player like that where he is so exciting to watch,” Collins said. “Ill tell you what, when he hits a ball in the gap or down the line, he is right out of the batters box — and he wants it, badly.” Reyes now has a major league-high 11 triples but Tuesday nights was his first on the road. “I take them at any time,” Reyes said. “It doesnt matter. A triple is a triple no matter where I play.” With a pair of hits Tuesday, he extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Reyes is 22-for-48 during the streak. Reyes triple came off reliever Marco Estrada and wasted an impressive start from Milwaukees Shaun Marcum, who pitched six scoreless innings. Prince Fielder hit his 15th home run of the season, a solo shot to give the Brewers the lead in the sixth. But that was the only big mistake of the night for Mets starter Chris Capuano (4-6), a longtime Brewers player making his return to Milwaukee. Capuano downplayed his return to Milwaukee going into the game but acknowledged afterward that it was “a little strange” to be on the visiting side at Miller Park. “Once you get on the mound and you lock in on that target, after you let that first pitch go, all that other stuff disappears,” Capuano said. “Its just a matter of getting yourself to that point with the minimum amount of distraction possible.” Capuano was with the Brewers organization from 2004 to 2010 and made the all-star team in 2006 before his career got off track because of injuries. He received warm applause from the crowd when he took the mound at the beginning of Tuesdays game, as well as in his first plate appearance. And he nearly homered in the fifth, sending a deep fly ball to centre that was caught at the wall by Carlos Gomez. Collins said Capuano has pitched better than his record would iindicate.dddddddddddd “Hes really pitched good,” Collins said. “He deserves three or four more wins than what hes got. He kept us in the game all night tonight. Really was very, very good. When you make only one bad pitch, thats a pretty good outing.” Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 17th save. Estrada (1-3) took the loss. Tuesdays game came as a heat wave hit Milwaukee, with 94-degree temperatures at first pitch. The Brewers were nearly as hot as a team, having won 20 of their past 26 games coming into Tuesdays game — most recently a four-game road sweep of the Florida Marlins. Marcum held the Mets scoreless, giving up two hits in six innings. But he threw 108 pitches and gave up four walks, and Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said he struggled with his command. “He still finds a way to get people out and he still finds a way to keep the run total down to where youve got a real good chance to win,” Roenicke said. “If he goes out there and battles like that and they only score one off him, almost every night, were going to win.” Carlos Beltran was back in the lineup for the Mets after leaving Sundays game against Atlanta with a right leg bruise. X-rays were negative, and Beltran said before the game that he still had some soreness after receiving treatment during the Mets off day Monday. “It didnt seem to affect him at all,” Collins said. Beltran got off to a rough start, struggling to field a first-inning line drive off the bat of Corey Hart, although the play was ruled a hit. But he recovered to make several good plays later in the game. And Collins was happy his team got through a game without any more injuries. “We didnt lose anybody tonight,” Collins said. NOTES: The Brewers drafted 3B Trent Boras in the 30th round of the first-year player draft on Tuesday. He is the son of agent Scott Boras, who represents Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder. … One round earlier, the Brewers selected right-hander David Lucroy, the younger brother of Lucroy. … Reyes singled in the fifth, extending his hitting streak. Téma: Jak postupovat / , was among 65 go ORLANDO, Fla. — Another baseball tradition is about to largely disappear: a manager, with a crazed look in his eyes, charging the field and getting into a face-to-face shouting match with an umpire. Instead, most calls on the field next season will be subject to video review by umpires in New York, Major League Baseball took the first vote in a two-step process Thursday, unanimously approving funding for expanded instant replay in 2014. They plan to approve the new rules when they meet Jan. 16 in Paradise Valley, Ariz., after agreements with the unions for umpires and players. “We made a gigantic move today,” Commissioner Bud Selig said. “This is quite historic.” Selig long opposed replay and watched from afar as it was first used by the NFL in 1986, the NHL in 1991, the NBA in 2002 and Wimbledon in 2006. Even the Little League World Series put replay in place for 2008. MLB allowed it starting August 2008 but in a limited manner: to determine whether potential home runs were fair or cleared fences. Now, virtually every decision likely will be subject to review, except balls and strikes, checked swings and some foul tips. “Tag plays, out/safe at first, fair/foul past the bags, those are all going to be included,” said Rob Manfred, MLBs chief operating officer. So no more blown calls, like Don Denkingers at first base that turned Game 6 of the 1985 World Series or Jim Joyces bad decision at first base that cost Detroits Armando Galarraga a perfect game in 2010. “We want to get more plays right, the ones that matter,” Manfred said. Manfred said when a manager wants to challenge a call, he will notify an umpire, triggering a review in New York by what are likely to be present or retired big league umps. A headset would be brought to the crew chief, who would be notified of the decision. There will be a maximum of two challenges per manager in each game — “it could be less,” Manfred said — and if the challenge is upheld it would not be counted against the managers limit. If a manager is out of challenges, umpires probably will be allowed request a review on their own. “Getting more plays right can only enhance the game,” St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. Manfred appeared to indicate that the video being reviewed in New York could be show to fans in stadiums or possibly on television broadcasts. “I think you can expect that there will be as part of this package expanded use of in-stadium video boards,” he said. Selig has emphasized that he doesnt want replay to slow games, whose increased length in recent decades has been targeted for criticism. “The current thinking is that if a manager comes out and argues, once he argues, he cant challenge that play,” Manfred said. “One way to control the timing of challenges is to use the natural flow of the game, that is the next pitch cuts off your right to challenge.” But MLB doesnt want managers to tell players to stall to give team employees time to review video on their own and instruct the dugout whether to use a challenge. In tests last week at the Arizona Fall League, most reviews averaged 1 minute, 40 seconds. Former manager Tony La Russa, now an MLB special adviser, said managers will have to “rely on their integrity” and not cause delays. “This is an historic opportunity,” he said. “Were going to monitor it. If somebody plays around with it, theyre going to get called on the carpet.” Manfred said the initial rules likely wont be the final ones. “The system will see some continuing evolution until we get to a point of stability, similar to what you saw in the NFL,” he said. M LONDON — Chelseas fine run of form came to an abrupt end in a 2-0 defeat at Newcastle, while Manchester City crushed Norwich 7-0 and Manchester United beat Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday. City showed its title credentials with a devastating rout that maintained its perfect home record this season. Down at Craven Cottage, United scored three times in the space of 13 minutes to dispatch Fulham 3-1, courtesy of goals from Antonio Valencia, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney. Chelsea went into its game at St James Park on the back of a nine-match unbeaten run in all competitions and got off to a good start. But Jose Mourinhos side paid for its missed chances as Newcastle secured a first home wins in two months with goals from French duo Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy. “I dont need to lose a match to be aware of (how competitive the league is),” Mourinho said. “It is something I know and pass on to my players every game. I know exactly how it is. The race is there for everybody.” Following the Blues slip-up, City moved up to fourth place in the standings, a point behind Chelsea. League leader Arsenal was hosting second-place Liverpool in Saturdays late game. United raced into a three-goal lead within the first 22 minutes before Alexander Kacaniklic pulled a goal back for Fulham with a shot that deflected in off Rooney in the 65th minute. United was less impressive in the second half after United manager David Moyes made three changes during the interval following a string of injuries. The Red Devils, who have now won their last six Premier League meetings with Fulham, stayed eighth in the table, two points behind City. “Its always been my team since Ive taken over from Sir Alex Ferguson, it can take time to settle in and it has for us but Manchester United usually make slow starts and get better as the season goes on,” said Moyes, who replaced Ferguson this summer. “The players have great habits from the previous manager and they have a winning mentality which I see every day.” In other matches, goalkeeper Asmir Begovic scored a bizarre goal after 13 seconds in Stoke Citys 1-1 draw with Southampton, while Sunderland had two men sent off in a 1-0 defeat at Hull City. Last-place Crystal Palace lost 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion and West Ham was held to a goalless draw by Aston Villa. Manchester City dropped England keeper Joe Hart after a string of high-profile mistakes for club and country and his replacement Costel Pantilimon enjoyed a quiet afternoon for his Premier League debut against Norwich. Manuel Pellegrinis team cruised from the start as David Silva hit the post after 15 minutes before Bradley Johnson scored an own goal to put City in front. Silva, Matija Nastasic and Alvaro Negredo then slotted home before the interval and Yaya Toure scored with a curled free kick into the top corner in the 60th minute. Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko completed the rout. “We were very unhappy when we lost against Chelsea (last weekend), but we didnt deserve to lose that match — we dominated possession. So we continued playing the same way, we won against Newcastle in the Cup in midweek and I thought today we had a really good match,” Pellegrini said. “Norwich did not have a chance to score, we scored seven and could have scored more.” On a windy day at the Britannia Stadium, Begovic scored almost immediately with a kick from his own area that bounced before flying into Artur Borucs goal. Southampton levelled in the 42nd minute as James Ward-Prowse crossed from the right for Jay Rodriguez to head home his third goal in his last four Premier League appearances. After 10 games, Stoke is 16th in the standings, just one point above the relegation zone. Against Sunderland, Hull took the lead after 25 minutes, thanks to an own goal by Carlos Cuellar, who headed home under pressure from Yannick Sagbo. Another setback followed when Sunderland goalkeeper Kieren Westwood had to be replaced by Vito Mannone in the 43rd minute due to a neck injury. However, much worse was to come for Sunderlands new manager Gus Poyet in first-half stoppage time, as Lee Cattermole picked up a straight red for a bad challenge on Ahmed Elmohamady and Andrea Dossena was dismissed for a stamp on David Meyler. According to The Globe and Mails James Mirtle, the Latvian mens Olympic team – which finished eighth in the hockey tournament – now faces possible disqualification after a second player has allegedly tested positive for a banned substance. Mirtle cites a report from Latvian web site sportacentrs.com that states an unnamed player has turned up the teams second positive drug test of the tournament. Forward Vitalijs Pavlovs failed a drug test following Latvias 2-1 quarter-final defeat to Canada. Under Olympic rules, hockey teams do not face disqualification until mmultiple players test positive for banned substances.dddddddddddd The eighth-place finish improved Latvia to 10th in the IIHF world rankings, which is a key determinant to Olympic qualification. The top nine teams in the IIHF world rankings received automatic berths to the Sochi Games, which was the reason why Norway (ranked ninth through 2012) was able to avoid the qualification tournaments that saw Slovenia, Austria and Latvia qualify by beating the likes of Germany, France and Belarus. IIHF rankings are based on tournament performance over a four-year span, including both the Olympic hockey tournament and the World Championships. Téma: Jak postupovat / aka, will work mi MALMO, SWEDEN – Brent Sutter is usually pretty honest when it comes to assessing his players both in words and actions. Team Canadas head coach has, at different times during the World Junior Hockey Championship, benched 16-year-old Connor McDavid and alternate captain Jonathan Drouin for taking untimely penalties. After one pre-tournament game he declared Drouins performance was “average at best.” He noted goalie Jake Paterson would want a couple goals back after a loss to the Czech Republic. On Wednesday, Sutter had another blunt assessment, but this one was of the positive variety when asked about Edmonton Oil Kings forward Curtis Lazar and specifically how hes adjusting to playing the wing. “Obviously, hes been one of our best forwards if not our best so we got to make sure he feels comfortable.” Lazar, a first-round pick of the Ottawa Senators last June, started Tuesdays game against the United States on left wing before shifting to the right. On Wednesday, he was back on the right wing skating alongside centre Nic Petan and Connor McDavid at practice. “We talked after the first period and he was having a bit of difficulty with that position so I moved him back and he got his game right back where he was before,” said Sutter. “Its definitely unique thats for sure,” said Lazar, who has also taken shifts at centre, which is the position he plays in the WHL. “I played all three positions in one game, which is something Ive never done before. I started at left wing against the Americans and I was struggling a little bit so Sutter moved me to the right side where I feel a little more comfortable. Its about versatility and I want to do whatever it takes to help the team win.” The numbers back up Sutters assessment that Lazar has been among the most effective Canadian forwards. He has two goals and three assists through four games while playing on both special teams units and in key defensive situations. Lazar has also come through in the clutch. His third-period goal against the Americans stood up as the game winner. With nine centres on the roster a number of the 13 forwards have had to shift to the wing, which has turned Sutter into a mad scientist at times as he searches for a winning formula. “Its been a revolving door,” the coach acknowledged. “Theres not really a plan in place. You just have a feel for your team. If somethings not working, youve got to change. You dont have time to let it progress over a month. If somethings not working or someones not playing well, you have to change it up quickly.” Lazars ability to adapt, at least at right wing, has given Sutter some much-needed flexibility. “I love skating and I love this big ice,” Lazar, a Vernon, B.C. native, said. “It gives me a lot of time to wind-up, get in on the forecheck and do my thing.” .
