PHOENIX - For the second time in four games, the Arizona Diamondbacks couldnt hold a lead. Angel Pagan hit a three-run home run in San Franciscos five-run eighth inning and the Giants beat the Diamondbacks 8-5 on Thursday in a game that was halted briefly in the top of the first due to a swarm of bees in the outfield. Paul Goldschmidt and Mark Trumbo each hit two-run homers and Arizona led 5-3 after seven, but the Giants teed off on reliever Will Harris (0-1) in the eighth to take three of four games from the Diamondbacks. “Close games but our bullpen cost us two of them,” Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. Brandon Belt hit his third home run of the series and Brandon Hicks had a pinch-hit solo shot for the Giants, who had rallied from four down to win the series opener Monday. Belt, who had no homers and just two RBIs in the spring, joined Barry Bonds, Willie Mays and Kevin Mitchell as the only Giants with three homers in the first four games of a season. Goldschmidt homered in the first inning off Tim Lincecum, his sixth homer in 21 career at-bats against the Giants right-hander. “Im going to start throwing underhand to him,” Lincecum said. “I dont know, Ive just got to figure out something.” Jean Machi (2-0) got one out for the victory. Machi also got the win in the season opener. Goldschmidt extended his hitting streak to 25 games, second-longest in franchise history. He also doubled to improve to 12 of 23 against Lincecum with 13 RBIs. With a pair of season-opening losses to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Australia, Arizona has started the season 1-5. Bronson Arroyo, sidelined most of the spring with a sore back, was lifted after 4 1-3 innings in his Diamondbacks debut. Pagan, who had three hits, homered on the first pitch after the Giants tied it at 5. “It was down and over the plate,” Gibson said. “He is very aggressive and he smoked it.” With the Diamondbacks leading 5-3, Hunter Pence drew a one-out walk in the eighth and scored on Hector Sanchezs double. Pinch-hitter Buster Posey was walked intentionally and Michael Morses pinch-hit single up the middle tied it. That brought up Pagan, who hit the first pitch into the swimming pool area in right field to put San Francisco on top. Arizonas Aaron Hill had three hits, including an RBI double, and scored twice. Belts two-out homer off Arroyo in the first inning, his third in his first 14 at-bats this season, put the Giants up 1-0. Hill singled with one out in the Arizona first to bring up Golsdschmidt, who hit the first pitch he saw into the pool area. San Francisco tied it at 2-all in the fourth. Pablo Sandoval led off with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on Pences single and scored on Sanchezs sacrifice fly to centre. Arroyo gave up a leadoff double to Pagan to start the fifth. Pagan took third on Gregor Blancos sacrifice bunt and Arroyos day was over. Left-hander Oliver Perez got Belt and Sandoval to pop out to end the threat. Hicks shot to left off Josh Collmenter with one out in the seventh cut the lead to 4-3. It was his fourth career homer, first as a pinch hitter. Arizona added a run with two outs in the seventh, Hill doubling to the wall in left off Machi to score Gerardo Parra from first. “I felt as good as I could really ask for given the fact that I really only had nine or 10 innings of spring training,” Arroyo said. “I felt strong early on and felt like I had decent zip on my fastball. A lineup like that when you run eight lefties against me at times it can make you work a little bit harder.” NOTES: The Diamondbacks franchise-record hitting streak is 30 games by Luis Gonzalez from April 11-May 18, 1999. … The Giants play a weekend series with the Dodgers in Los Angeles, sending RH Ryan Voglesong to the mound Friday night. Sharper, 38, also is under investigation in sexual assault cases in Florida, Nevada and Arizona and has pleaded not guilty to rape charges in Los Angeles. Sharpers surrender Thursday night had been arranged in advance, LAPD Officer Bruce Borihan said. He was being held at the downtown Metropolitan Detention Center. In a bail motion filed in the California case, Los Angeles County Investigator John Maccharella described a pattern in which the former football star met women at clubs or parties and lured them to a hotel room, where they were allegedly drugged and raped. Lawyers for Sharper, who played in the NFL from 1997 to 2010 primarily with the Green Bay Packers, have said they would prove that any sexual contact Sharper engaged in was welcomed. The motion says the incidents happened in the past five months, with two occurring within a day in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Maccharella said he was told a woman went to a New Orleans bar with Sharper, consumed an alcoholic beverage provided by him and blacked out. She awoke the next morning while being sexually assaulted, the bail motion stated, noting that an exam later showed Shaarpers DNA was present.dddddddddddd Another man facing rape charges in the New Orleans case turned himself in to police there on Friday. Erik Nunez, 26, was booked on two counts of aggravated rape stemming from alleged assaults last September in New Orleans, police said. Police issued warrants on Thursday for Sharper and Nunez. They face charges in the alleged rape of two women at the same location Sept. 23, police spokeswoman Remi Braden said. Sharpers New Orleans-based lawyer, Nandi Campbell, and lawyer Leonard B. Levine, who represents Sharper in the California case, did not return telephone calls seeking comment. Braden said she did not know whether Nunez had a lawyer. The assault investigation in New Orleans is ongoing and additional arrests are possible, Braden said. If convicted in the California case, Sharper could face more than 30 years in state prison. If convicted of aggravated rape in Louisiana, both Sharper and Nunez could face life imprisonment. Sharper was selected All-Pro six times and chosen for the Pro Bowl five times. He played in two Super Bowls, one with the Green Bay Packers as a rookie and a second with the New Orleans Saints. Sharper retired after the 2010 season. He is an analyst for the NFL Network, which has suspended him indefinitely without pay. OAKLAND, Calif. — Coco Crisp drove in Kyle Blanks with a two-out single in the eighth inning and the Oakland Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Friday night. Josh Donaldson hit a three-run home run, his first in two weeks, to help the As extend their winning streak to four games. Oakland also owns the best record in the majors. Boston reliever Andrew Miller (2-5) hit Blanks and Alberto Callaspo with back-to-back pitches with one out in the eighth. After Nick Punto struck out looking, Crisp lined a 2-2 pitch to right and Blanks easily scored ahead of the throw from Brock Holt. Sean Doolittle pitched the ninth for his 10th save. The As closer also extended his scoreless streak to 23 1/3 innings, the longest active mark in the AL. Oakland only managed two hits off Boston starter Felix Doubront and had stranded eight runners before Crisp delivered the game-winner. Fernando Abad (2-2) pitched one inning for the win. The As have won the first two of this series after dropping two of three to the Red Sox at Fenway Park last month. Crisp entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the seventh and struck out against reliever Burke Badenhop. Both teams squandered multiple scoring opportunities. The Red Sox left two on in the fourth and failed to score after loading the bases in the fifth. The As had two on in the third, fourth and seventh but stranded them each time. Oakland starter Brad Mills struck out the side in the first before Boston loaded the bases with one out in the second following an error by Oakland second baseman Punto. Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two-run single to drive in Mike Napoli and Jonny Gomes. It could have been worse. As centre fielder Craig Gentry made a diving catch on Holts sinking liner, then threw to second to double off Stephen Drew. Boston tied it on David Ortizs RBI single in the third. Mills, acquired in a trade from Milwaukee earlier in the week, had not pitched in the majors since 2012. He walked four and struck out four before leaving after pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. Donaldsons three-run homer off Doubront in the first was his first since June 6. Doubront didnt allow another hit after that but left without a decision. He struck out four and walked four over 4 2-3 innings. NOTES: Oakland C Derek Norris left the game in the sixth after getting hit by a bat on his left forearm during Craig Holts at-bat. … Craig Gentry reached base in the third inning after getting hit by a pitch. The play had to be reviewed by the umpires before being upheld. … RHP Clay Buchholz (hyperextended knee) rejoined the big league club after making his second rehab appearance. ANAHEIM, Calif. — Nobody had beaten the Anaheim Ducks at home all season long, and they had another late lead until Jaromir Jagr got the New Jersey Devils to overtime. From there, the Ducks beat themselves. Jagr scored the tying goal with 1:01 left in regulation, and the Devils ended Anaheims eight-game home winning streak with a 4-3 victory on Wednesday night. Travis Zajac got credit for the winning goal at 1:58 of overtime, but the Ducks put it in their own net — a fitting finish to what coach Bruce Boudreau saw as a tentative, reactionary effort. The Devils felt they got the reward they deserved for a gritty finish in the opener of a three-game California trip. “We knew we had to play better to give ourselves a chance, so we had to come out strong in the third period,” Zajac said. “We started to win some forecheck battles and stuck with it right to the end. We got rewarded late in the game on Jagrs goal. It was kind of a lucky one there.” After Jagr converted Patrik Elias pass from behind the net, with Martin Brodeur pulled for an extra attacker, New Jersey got even more luck on the winner. Ben Lovejoy hit teammate Corey Perry with the puck while attempting to clear the crease, and it caromed past Jonas Hiller to end the longest season-opening home winning streak in Anaheim history. “Thats obviously an incredibly unfortunate ending,” Lovejoy said. “Thats a game we need. Were an incredibly desperate team, even though were still all right in the standings.” With four wins in five games capped by this impressive comeback, the Devils are starting to feel better about their 8-8-5 spot in the standings. Moments after Brodeur made an exceptional save on Mathieu Perreaults attempt at an overtime goal, the Devils were rewarded with a gift from Lovejoy and Perry. “It was nice to pull it off because we worked very hard and we battled,” said Brodeur, who stopped 22 shots. “When you win, you always look at these kinds of saves. Sometimes the games are ugly, and if you make one save like that, it makes the difference.” Elias had three assists, and Marek Zidlicky and Eric Gelinas scored power-play goals in the first period after an incorrect high-sticking double minor call against Teemu Selanne. “I think the schedule worked to our advantage tonight,” said Jagr, who scored his 689th NHL goal. &quoot; They had to travel last night, and we had one extra day of rest here.dddddddddddd Maybe in the third period it showed. But theyre one of the best teams in the league — maybe the best team — so thats a huge two points for us." Ryan Getzlaf scored the tiebreaking power-play goal, and Nick Bonino had a goal and an assist for the NHL-leading Ducks, who have lost five straight. Anaheim was the leagues only remaining unbeaten home team, but the Ducks are in a skid after playing a league-high 24 games this season. Matt Beleskey also scored for the Ducks, still on top of the overall NHL standings despite going 0-3-2 in their last five. Hiller made 21 saves in just his second start in seven games. Boudreau bemoaned his clubs soft third-period effort, a creeping problem in recent days. “Thats all I talked about (in) the previous two games,” Boudreau said. “We played not to lose in the third period. You cant play the game in your own zone and expect to win. … I dont even call it a mistake (on the final goal). It was an accident. Thats the way the game was going. We missed two open nets. You knew something bad was going to happen.” Dustin Penner had two assists for the Ducks, who stumbled home to friendly Honda Center after a winless four-game East Coast road trip. Anaheim also lost defenceman Francois Beauchemin in the second period to an upper-body injury. “We need to respond to this,” Lovejoy said. “Were not playing great hockey right now. We want to be an elite team in this league, and were not playing like it.” Until the big finish, New Jersey got all of its offence on a break from a blown call. Devils defenceman Andy Greene was left with a bloody mouth after a high-stick to the face, and Selanne was whistled for a double minor — but a video replay clearly showed Zidlicky hit his teammate in the face while tussling with Perreault. Selannes stick was on the ice. Bonino tied it with his career-best sixth goal, and Getzlaf put the Ducks ahead with a vicious slap shot for the 12th goal of his stellar season. NOTES: After the game, Anaheim hired former Edmonton GM Steve Tambellini as a part-time pro scout. … The NHLs competition committee recommended video review of all high-sticking double minor penalties last spring, but the league rejected the idea in September. … The clubs met for the first time since February 2012. MONTREAL – A recharged Eugenie Bouchard, fresh off her stunning run to the Australian Opens final four, says shes ready to lead the Canadian team against Serbia at this weekends Federation Cup. Bouchard, who grabbed the tennis worlds attention at last months Grand Slam, will be joined in the best-of-five series by Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa, Sharon Fichman of Toronto and Aleksandra Wozniak, of Blainville, Que. The 19-year-old rising tennis star said Wednesday she took time off after the Australian Open, and only worked a little bit on her serve and a few technical issues. “I was definitely physically and mentally tired,” Bouchard told a news conference at Montreals Claude-Robillard Sports Complex, the site of Saturday and Sundays indoor World Group II first-round series womens tie. “Im happy with what I did, but never satisfied. I wanted to do better. At the end of the day I lost in the semifinals, so … I hit the practice court and Im going to continue to work hard on court to try and do better.” Bouchard, whose success in Melbourne moved her up to No. 19 in the world rankings, made her Fed Cup debut in 2011 and has a record of 7-2. Last year in Kyiv, Bouchard battled an injured ankle and won two matches, including the decisive doubles match alongside Fichman. That victory gave Canada a place in World Group II for the first time since 2010. Dabrowski, the countrys top-ranked female doubles player at No. 61 in the WTA computer, reached her first two WTA doubles finals in 2013 at Brussels and Linz in addition to winning two doubles titles of the ITF Challenger Circuit. The 26-year-old is 3-0 in Fed Cup play. The 23-year-old Fichman has a 22-7 career record at the Fed Cup, while Wozniak, 26, is 37-9. The Canadians will square off this weekend with a young, less-experienced Serbian team that will be missing two of its top players: Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic, a former world No. 1. Bouchard, who upset Ivanovic in the quarterfinal at the Australian Open, said Wednesday her team would have liked to meet them in the Fed Cup. “I think were all disappointed not to have the two best, Ivanovic and Jankovic, here,” said Bouchard. “But now we will take advantage, we will try to do our best and I think we have all the best players in Canada here. They might not have their best, so we will use that to our advantage.” Serbian team captain Dejan Vranes said Ivanovic wont play this weekend due to injury and that Jankovic no longer competes in the event. The country will be represented by Nina Stojanovic, 17, Aleksandra Krunic, 20, Jovana Jaksic, 20, and Vesna Dolonc, 24, who at No. 117 is its top-ranked player. Vranes called the Canadians the favourites, particularly since they will be playing in front of a home crowd in a venue that holds some 4,000 fans. “We have a great challenge in front of us, but I believe in our team and I think we have a chance in every match,” a confident Vranes told reporters. “Well be ready to fight.” The Canadian women, however, are aiming to continue Canadas recent stretch of strong tennis performances. On the mens side, Milos Raonic climbed into the top 10 in the world last year, while Vasek Pospisil also rose in the rankings. Both reached the Rogers Cup semifinals in Montreal last summer and led the Davis Cup team to a first-ever semifinal appearance. Wozniak said she hopes the women can also deliver their own record-breaking finish. “Were looking forward to the challenge, and what the men did, its made history in Canada,” Wozniak said. “So, I think for me, and for the team, its important. We would love to make a new history for Canada and win this tie.” For Bouchard, who grew up in the Montreal Island community of Westmount, theres the bonus of playing a match in her hometown for the first time in a year and a half. “Its always fun to play in Montreal,” said Bouchard, who was asked whether more people seem to recognize her in the city since the Australian Open. “Yeah, for sure, there are people who say, Good luck and that they are proud of me. Its special. Im happy to get compliments like that.” . The Stars were up 3-1 in the third. Stars and Jets will meet at the MTS Centre Sunday night (TSN Jets, TSN 1290) in what is a must win for the Jets. MADRID, Spain — Croatia midfielder Luka Modric reinforced his commitment to Real Madrid on Wednesday by signing a four-season contract extension through June 2018 with the club. Modric, who joined Madrid in August 2012 from English Premier League club Tottenham in a deal worth a reported 35 million euros ($44 million), won the UEFA Champions League with the La Liga club last season. The midfielder said joining Madrid had been like a dream come true. “With my renewal, my dream continues. Hopefully in the next few years we can win many more titles,” he said. Madrid announced the extension, linking Modric to the club for the next four seasons, in a short statement. The 28-year-old has matured into a vital player for the European champions, where coach Carlo Ancelotti values his calm assurance and ability to feed attacking players with skilfully weighted passes from the midfield. He is also prized for his willingness to fall back and tackle in defence. Ancelotti looks likely to use Modric alongside Xabi Alonso and Toni Kroos. Modric played a key role in the 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Tuesday. “When I came here two years ago we won the Super Cup,” he said. “It would be very important to start the season by winning another Super Cup.” The second leg is to be played Friday at Atleticos Vicente Calderon Stadium. WELLINGTON, New Zealand — After 24 years of stumbles, disappointments and plain old chokes, New Zealand finally lived up to its billing as world rugbys premier side in 2011. The All Blacks stood up to the pressure of playing on home soil to win the Rugby World Cup for the first time since 1987. With star flyhalf Dan Carter injured, they didnt do it in the style that neutrals would have hoped for but few in the rugby-mad country cared. All that counted was seeing captain Richie McCaw get his hands on the Webb Ellis trophy. While New Zealands 8-7 final win over France cemented its place at the top of rugbys world order, the rest of the tournament suggested that the games minnows had narrowed the gap on the established powers. Romania, Georgia and Tonga all competed more strongly than expected in a tournament that had become renowned for exposing the shortcomings of less experienced teams. Tonga gave the All Blacks a hard time in the opening match, and beat France in pool play. When Georgia played Romania in Palmerston North, city officials changed the names of the towns main streets to honour the teams. The French bickered and fought their way to within a single score of what would have been the countrys first World Cup win, while Australia impressed fitfully before losing to fierce rival New Zealand in the semifinals. Australia did win the final edition of the Tri-Nations before Argentina is admitted next year and looks set for a bright future with the likes of James OConnor, Digby Ioane and Quade Cooper. Where England goes from here is less certain after a World Cup campaign characterized by turgid performances and off-field indiscipline. Mike Tindalls drunken night out in Queenstown attracted more headlines than his on-field displays and team manager Martin Johnson quit amid the very public recriminations that followed a quarterfinal loss to France. But the tournament — and the year — was dominated by New Zealand. The All Blacks never looked like losing, rolling to comfortable wins over France, Argentina and Australia before a rematch with the French in front of a partisan crowd at Aucklands Eden Park. Carter was missing with a groin injury and the team was down to its fourth-choice flyhalf but captain McCaw led his team coolly through a tense second half with only a single point separating the teams. Previously discarded standoff Stephen Donald kicked what turned out to be the winning points. “When the final whistle went, I wanted to be happy but I dont know if I was,” McCaw said. “I was relieved more than anything else because I knew the amount of energy and time that had gone into it all.” With an implanted screw grating on bone, McCaw was unable to train through the later rounds of the tournament and was barely able to pull a boot onto his swollen foot ahead of the 20-6 semifinal win over Australia. But he pulled through — delaying surgery until after the competition was over — and was named the International Rugby Boards player of the year. Greater honours were on offer to the flanker but McCaw politely declined the knighthood his country offered him. New Zealanders in large cities and small towns embraced the tournament, with teams and visiting fans welcomed with warmth and enthusiasm. The tournament saw the rise of a talented young Wales team. The Welsh lost their first and last matches by just a single point - first to defending champions South Africa and then to France in a semifinal in which 22-year-old captain Sam Warburton was harshly sent off early. Australia came into the tournament confident after winning the Tri-Nations but lost to Ireland in a staggering upset in pool play which split the draw along geographical lines. Johnson wasnt the only coach to suffer for his teams Cup performance. Fiji was the first to sack its coach, removing Sam Domoni within days of its elimination. Springboks coach Peter de Villiers followed, with captain Victor Matfield also quitting. Graham Henry, who coached the All Blacks for eight years, was allowed a more dignified exit and by December had been replaced by his assistant Steve Hansen. Frances Mark Lievremont, barely speaking to his players in a campaign riven by dissent, did not seek reappointment. Englands Jonny Wilkinson quietly shut the door on an injury-ravaged international career that included the winning drop goal of the 2003 World Cup final and made him the sports leading scorer until Carter overtook him. But Toby Flood had largely assumed the England flyhalf role by then, leading his team to the Six Nations championship along with try-scoring winger Chris Ashton. Australias win in the shortened Tri-Nations followed on from the success of the Queensland Reds who won the first Super tournament to feature 15 teams. In Europe, Leinster won the Heineken Cup, Harlequins the Challenge Cup, Saracens won the English Premiership and Munster the Magners League. But New Zealands domination was not to be denied. The country won four of eight tournaments on the 2010-2011 IRB Sevens World Series to claim the championship for the ninth time. The United States-born Fiva, who was eliminated in the first round at the Sochi Olympics, won the final ahead of Tomas Kraus of the Czech Republic, Didrik Bastian Juell of Norway and Christopher Del Bosco of Montreal. (Sports Network) – The Vancouver Canucks will take a shot at reclaiming first place in the Western Conference tonight when they host the Montreal Canadiens. Vancouver stopped a two-game losing streak on Thursday, as Samuel Pahlsson scored the game-winner with 5:43 to play to lift the Canucks to a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets at Rogers Arena. “It hasnt been going in for me lately so to get that one is big,” said Pahlsson. “Its not my main role out there, but you want to get goals once in a while.” Ryan Kesler and Alexander Edler each scored for the Canucks, while Cory Schneider posted 30 saves in the win. Roberto Luongo will likely be back between the pipes tonight, but has allowed at least three goals in five of his last six games. Vancouver holds a comfortable 18-point lead over Colorado for the top spot in the Northwest Division with 92 points and sits one point back of St. Louis for the top spot in the Western Conference and overall in the NHL. The Canucks could get a little closer to that top spot tonight, as they have won 10 of their last 11 at home versus the Canadiens. Vancouver also earned a shootout win in Montreal back on Dec. 8. The Canadiens got some good news on Saturday when the team activated defenceman Andrei Markov and said he would be available for the game against Vancouver. The 33-year-old has not played for the Canadiens since tearing the ACL in his right knee over a year ago in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Montreal comes into tonights affair on a winning note after Max Pacioretty scored twice and added an assist in the Canadiens 5-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday. P.K. Subban posted a goal and two assists for the Canadiens, who had dropped seven of eight coming into the game. Peter Budaj posted 24 stops in the win. “Im happy that I was able to help us shake off this losing streak,” said Subban. “I thought we kept the game simple and just tried to play solid every shift.” Vancouver is 20-8-4 as the home team this year, while the Habs are 14-17-2 on the road. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Royals agreed to one-year contracts with pitchers Jonathan Sanchez, Luke Hochevar and Felipe Paulino along with reserve outfielder Mitch Maier on Tuesday, leaving outfielder Alex Gordon as the only remaining player in arbitration. The Royals are hopeful of signing Gordon to a long-term deal. Sanchez will get $5.6 million and is eligible for up to $200,000 in bonuses after arriving in an off-season trade that sent outfielder Melky Cabrera to San Francisco. Hochevar will make $3.51 million, Paulino is in line for $1.9 million and Maier will make $865,000, not counting performance bonuses. General manager Dayton Moore, who was travelling to Latin America on Tuesday, said last week he was hopeful that deals would get done with each of the players before arbitration. He also indicated that hed like to get a deal done with Gordon, who was drafted by the Royals and has expressed interest in signing a long-term deal before he reaches free agency. Gordon has asked for $5.45 million in arbitration, while Kansas City has countered at $4.15 million. “Every day youre working to try to improve. You dont want to get too crazy, force things,” Moore said. “I think Ive learned the last few years not to be too forceful, to force things that may not work. When you have the group we have right now, its easier to be patient.” Sanchez, Hochevar aand Bruce Chen are expected to anchor the Royals starting rotation, while Paulino is a favourite to land one of the remaining jobs.dddddddddddd The subject of trade speculation for years, Sanchez was the Giants best pitcher during the latter part of 2010, when they beat the Texas Rangers to win the World Series. He was 4-1 with a 1.03 ERA over his last seven outings, and finished the year with a 13-9 record and a 3.07 ERA. He struggled most of last season, though, partly due to biceps tendinitis, going 4-7 with a 4.26 ERA. He missed the final month with a left ankle sprain. Hochevar finally experienced a breakthrough in his fifth big league season. The former No. 1 overall draft pick went 11-11 with a 4.68 ERA, leading the Royals in innings (198), strikeouts (128) and giving an indication that he can match up with an opposing teams ace. Paulino was acquired from Colorado for cash in May. He wound up going 4-6 with a 4.11 ERA once he arrived in Kansas City. The 29-year-old Maier is the longest-tenured player on the Royals roster. He was drafted in the first round in 2003 but has struggled to crack the starting lineup. Still, he provides depth at both corner outfield spots after hitting .232 and driving in seven runs last season. Kansas City also signed second baseman Chris Getz and catcher Brayan Pena on Monday, avoiding arbitration. Both are expected to be backups. TAMPA, Fla. — Daniel Briere might have been the most comfortable player on the ice. Playing in his 109th career playoff game and first for the Montreal Canadiens, Briere skated around in overtime feeling fresh and like something good was going to happen. The least surprising thing was that Briere, a patented playoff performer, made the play to set up Dale Weises goal to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1. It was Brieres 110th point in the Stanley Cup playoffs but also evidence of how strong an overall game he played. “I had lots of chances,” Briere said. “I really liked the play of our line. Talking to ourselves before the game, we wanted to bring energy to our team. I believe we were able to do that. Personally I felt like I had a lot of jump and probably couldve scored a few goals before that overtime.” Briere had a couple of the games better scoring chances despite playing in a role with Weise and Michael Bournival in which he wasnt expected to bring offence. But thats exactly what he brought on the game-winner, taking advantage of a Tampa Bay defensive breakdown to feed Weise for the winner. “It was an excellent reward for them because they played an excellent game,” coach Michel Therrien said. “They deserved to score the winning goal.” Given his noticeable play for much of the night, Briere probably deserved more than just a point. But Weise will take what he got. “I thought he was awesome tonight,” Weise said of Briere. “Hes a guy that I grew up as a little kid watching him play, and he just raises his level in the playoffs and you saw that tonight.” Briere helped beat the Habs in the 2010 Eastern Conference final while with the Philadelphia Flyers, putting up three points in the series first two games. He led all players in those playoffs with 30 points in 23 games. Even though his minutes arent that of a top-liner, Montreal hopes to continue to reap the benefits of Brieres playoff prowess, as it did Wednesday night. “Hes played a ton of playoff games and played some big games,” captain Brian Gionta said. “No different tonight.” Briere didnt want to blow one primary assist out of proportion, even though it was a significant one. “I dont know, its just one game,” he said. “I dont want to get too crazy. Its a huge win. Its a great feeling.” . Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade and Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin were named the NBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for the period ending Dec. 22. Wade averaged 26.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 steals while leading the Heat to a 3-0 record. The 31-year-old shot 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range en route to his 17th weekly honor. Griffin averaged 26.0 points and 11.3 rebounds per game as the Clippers finished the week with a perfect 4-0 mark. He finished with at least 20 points and 10 boards in three games, and shot 49 percent from the field and 87.5 percent from the free throw line for the week to secure the third weekly honor of his career. Other nominees for the awards included Atlantas Al Horford, Charlottes Kemba Walker, Golden States Stephen Curry, Clippers guard Chris Paul, Oklahoma Citys Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, Portlands Damian Lillard, Torontos Kyle Lowry and Washingtons John Wall. At 25-25, Washington is on track for its first playoff berth in six years. After an uninspiring 93-84 win over the Sacramento Kings, however, Wittman made it clear he expects more. “I dont want them to be satisfied,” Wittman said. “Were back to .500. Were better than .500. I want them to believe that. They believe that.” Over its last 14 games, Washington has been within a game of .500. Its flirtation with a winning record has been a source of ridicule. Quality wins over Miami, Oklahoma City and at Golden State were countered by home losses to Detroit, Boston, and Cleveland. As Washington frittered away most of a 17-point lead against Sacramento, Sundays game bore some of the earmarks of those unfocused defeats. “I wont accept the way we played,” Martell Webster said. “We should have won by 30 points.” There were some positives for Washington. Bradley Beal scored 16 points, hitting two 3-pointers in the final 6 minutes. Marcin Gortat added 17 points and eight rebounds. Nene scored 18 points and led a strong defensive effort, limiting DeMarcus Cousins to 14 points on 3-of-16 shooting. On a key sequence in the fourth quarter, Nene made a jumper, then followed with a block of Cousins. Nene took little credit for shutting down the NBAs ninth-leading scorer. “You know his average,” Nene said. “We did our job.” The Kings outrebounded the Wizards 49-38, but made only 35.4 per cent of their field goal tries, went 2 of 11 from 3-point range, and committed 18 turnovers leading to 26 Washington points. “That was not an offensive performance we were hoping for,” Sacramento coach Michael Malone said. “Very hard to win on the road when you turn the ball over that many times. We talked about it going in that this is a team that does a great job turning their opponents over and scoring.” Sacramentos Isaiaah Thomas scored 30 points and had eight assists, but he had little help.dddddddddddd Rudy Gay, one of three Kings who averages more than 20 points per game, had five points, hitting two of 11 shots. Rookie Ben McLemore scored nine of his 11 points in the second half, helping the Kings reduce the 17-point deficit to four. But Beal answered with 3-pointers from the same spot in the left corner to steady the Wizards. “We wish we could have had at least 10 more wins, but at the end of the day, we really cant complain where we are at,” Beal said. “Were in a solid position playoff-wise, but we still have a lot of moves to make.” Washington took command in the first half with a lift from its reserves. After Webster hit a 3-pointer, Kevin Seraphin made hook shots to close and open the quarters and added a jumper. When Garrett Temple retrieved a loose ball and scored a transition three-point-play, the Wizards had a 39-26 lead. Washingtons lead swelled to 17 points in the third quarter, but Sacramento went on a 14-2 run that bridged the quarters, the surge touched off by Quincy Acy, who scored on a put-back slam. It wasnt the resounding win the Wizards were looking for. Afterward they faced another round of questions about a sore subject – their .500 mark. “I dont want to answer that. I dont care about .500,” Nene said. “We need everything we can. Thats the mentality. If youre going to think small like that, its fine, just stop right there. If you want to go for the gold, the championship, make the team better, you need to think forward.” NOTES: Kentucky coach John Calipari attended the game, visiting with former Wildcats Cousins and John Wall. … With a 22.9 scoring average entering Sunday, Cousins ranks ninth in the NBA and is the only player in the top 15 who was not selected to play in the All-Star game. … Rudy Gay (illness) and Marcus Thornton (hip) returned to the starting lineup after missing Fridays loss at Boston. MILWAUKEE – It wasnt the bounce-back performance they expected, but it was the one they needed. Coming off a disappointing loss, their first of the young season in Atlanta 24 hours earlier, the Raptors responded with a gritty victory and one they can be proud of despite shooting just 40 per cent from the field. Rudy Gay, like the rest of his team, was not perfect, but delivered on his promise to be better after turning in one of his worst outings as a Raptor on Friday. “We learned from last night,” said Gay, the Raptors leading scorer, who had a career night rebounding the ball in Torontos 97-90 win over the Bucks Saturday. “It shows how resilient we are. We just picked it up and still got the win, even if it wasnt pretty.” In terms of offensive efficiency, it wasnt pretty. Gay, fresh off a 6-for-23 shooting night, shot just 4-of-14 from the floor. DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry also struggled, each shooting 5-for-14, while Jonas Valanciunas was 3-of-8 in just 16 minutes. “I mean, myself, I cant remember the last time I knocked down a shot personally,” Gay joked after the game. “But as far as the team [goes], we were moving the ball around and we defended our asses off.” “It definitely wasnt our offence,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey admitted. “We had to do it with our defence. We had to dig in.” Hanging their heads following Fridays defeat, Casey reminded his players they were just two games into a long season. His message to Gay and the others: if your shots not falling, find another way to help the team win. Message received. Gay grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds and got to the line 10 times, DeRozan dished out five assists and Lowry contributed six boards and four dimes. All three were a factor on defence. “Im just trying not to be one-dimensional,” Gay said. “[Friday,] my shot wasnt falling. Tonight my shot wasnt falling. I just wanted to make an effort on defence and on the glass…try to make myself a part of the game, because Friday I didnt feel like I was.” Shot selection was still an issue for Gay and so too were turnovers – he had five. With six minutes remaining and following a sloppy pass, Gay missed a 25-foot three-point jumper and committed a frustration foul. As a result, Casey took Gay out of the game. Whether the Raptors coach felt he needed a breather or whether he was sending Gay another message, the forward responded when he re-entered a minute-and-a-half later. “I know he probably didnt like it,” Casey said of his decision to sit Gay down midway through the final quarter. “But I know whats best for him. He needed to sit down for a little bit [and] let his second wind kick in. We got him right back in and he finished it out.” Gay checked back in with 4:24 left to go with the Raptors up two on the Bucks. He didnt attempt a single field goal the rest of the way, but knocked down a couple free throws and pulled down six big rebounds. “Nobody wants to come out of the game in the fourth quarter,” Gay said candidly after the victory. “I dont know anyone who does. But no matter what happens, you have to stay focused and do the best you can for the team.” The Raptors took advantage of six Milwaukee miscues in the third quarter to stretch their lead to as big as 13 before the Bucks made a run in the fourth, tying the game at 85 with just under six minutes to play and Gay on the bench at the time. A similar stretch, late in the second quarter, turned the game in Atlanta, but this time, the Raptors responded, mainly on the defensive end. “We are becoming a resilient team,” Gay said. “Times where we would fold last season, we are showing we can come back after a tough loss and still win games.” Dominating the boards, the Raptors out-rebounded Milwaukee 60-38, including an 18-6 advantage on the offensive boards Saturday night. Including Gays career total, seven Raptors tallied five or more rebounds and the team won the battle of the boards for a third consecutive game. “[It was a] concerted effort to rebound,” Lowry said. “Thats our team game. When we go to small ball, we all have to rebound.” Through three games, the Raptors have out-rebounded their opponents by 42 with a plus-23 differential on the offensive glass. Moving the ball After totalling just 15 assists in each of the teams first two games, the Raptors registered 19 dimes on 31 made field goals. “I think the ball really moved a lot better tonight,” said Lowry, who had four assists without committing a turnover. “I think everyone made a concerted effort from watching the film this morning of last nights game to try to get the ball from side to side and get everybody involved early.” Quiet night for Jonas For the second straight night, Jonas Valanciunas played fewer than 18 minutes, a product of the match-up against smaller, quicker front lines according to Casey. Casey has opted to use small lineups in the fourth quarter of each game, matching up with both the Hawks and Bucks, who have done the same. “When you go small, hes not ready to be that five man yet, alone,” Casey said of Valanciunas, preferring to use Amir Johnson or Tyler Hansbrough as an anchor in the middle with four smaller, more versatile players. “Hes going to get there, believe me – hes going to get there. Hes not there yet.” Up next The Raptors return home, where theyll host the two-time defending champion Miami Heat at the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday. John Walls Washington Wizards, meanwhile, are headed the opposite way, losing four of their last five games to let teams behind them in the East inch closer. After letting a 25-point lead dwindle to three Wednesday night, Bledsoe and Dragic got back to business and combined to finish with 48 points, 13 assists and 13 rebounds in Phoenixs 99-93 victory over Washington. “Im glad,” Dragic said, “that we didnt panic.” The surprising Suns moved into a tie with the Dallas Mavericks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Both clubs are 43-29 with 10 games remaining. “We dont care what other people think,” Dragic said. “Before the season, they were saying were going to win 15 games.” The Suns have won seven of their last eight, coinciding with Bledsoes return to the starting lineup after missing 33 games because of knee surgery. He had 23 points, seven assists and six rebounds, and Dragic wound up with 25 points, six assists and seven rebounds. “We were missing him those two months,” Dragic said about his backcourt mate. “Now hes back and he looks good. Its much easier for me to play with him. He can handle the ball, I can handle the ball.” Wizards centre Marcin Gortat, who used to play for the Suns, offered high praise for their pair of guards. “These guys are hungry. They bring it every night. They compete every night. They know what theyre playing for,” Gortat said. “They have character, a lot of will to win the game.” Gortat was not nearly as complimentary about his current teammates, who are sixth in the Eastern Conference but now are only 1 1/2 games ahead of No. 7 Charlotte, which beat Brooklyn 116-111 in overtime Wednesday. Gortat called Washingtons showing “embarrassing” and added: “Sometimes we show that mentally we are weak and just not competing.dddddddddddd Thats it.” Wall, who led Washington with 29 points and six assists, and coach Randy Wittman preferred to put the blame on poor defence that allowed Phoenix to shoot 50 per cent on 3-pointers for the game (14 of 28). Phoenix made 7 of 9 field-goal tries during a 17-4 run to open the second half. The Suns led by as much as 75-50 in the third quarter, but Washington kept chipping away at that, getting as close as 83-79 on Walls three-point play with a little more than 8 minutes remaining. But an 8-0 run by Phoenix that closed with Dragics 3-pointer followed by his reverse layup gave the Suns some breathing room. Washington again cut into the lead, though, and when Wall made consecutive driving layups, it was 93-90 with 1 1/2 minutes left. Sure enough, Dragic and Bledsoe again responded. Bledsoe hit a 3 off Dragics assist, and then Dragic fed Gerald Green, who was fouled and made two free throws. And that was pretty much that. Bledsoe called it “a sloppy win,” but knows that his team is going to fare well when six players each make at least one 3-pointer, as happened Wednesday. “We live by the 3, die by the 3, most likely. Thats how it is,” Bledsoe said. “When were making 3, its tough to beat us.” Notes: Wizards G Bradley Beal missed the end of the first half and beginning of the second because he went to the locker room for treatment of a right hip pointer after a Suns player landed on him. Beal said he hopes to play Friday against visiting Indiana. … The Suns had lost their previous three games against the Wizards, including at Phoenix in January. … Wall reached 100 3-pointers for the season for the first time in his NBA career, and he joins Beal, Trevor Ariza and Martell Webster to give Washington a franchise-high four players with at least that many. SAN FRANCISCO — Los Angeles Clippers reserve forward Hedo Turkoglu will not play in Game 6 against the Golden State Warriors because of a lower back injury. Clippers coach Doc Rivers said after the teams morning shootaround that Turkoglu is “not doing well enough” to play in Thursday nights game. Turkoglu injured his back in the third quarter of the Clippers 113-103 win over the Warriors on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. Turkoglu was defending David Lee when he was knocked to the ground. Lee picked up an offensive foul on the play. Turkoglu lay writhing in pain during a timeout before being helped to the locker room. The 35-year-old veteran is averaging 3.2 points and one rebound in 8.2 minutes per game in the series. It was the Flames seventh straight home loss, a new franchise mark. The Jets opened the scoring with Bryan Little notching his 16th of the year, putting home the rebound off a Michael Frolik back hand shot. Andrew Ladd also drew an assist, time of the marker was 5:01. Dustin Byfuglien with his 11th from Olli Jokinen and Chris Thorburn at 8:11 put the Jets ahead 2-0 after one, the shots 10-8 Jets. The Jets added two more in the second, Mark Scheifele with his eighth from Blake Wheeler and Thorburn, followed by Jokinen on the power play from Ladd and Little. Jokinen has now scored in back to back games and has 13 on the season. Shots were 6-3 Jets in the second. In both periods the Jets forecheck gave the Flames problems. The Flames came out with a push to start the third and Mark Giordano with his eighth got the Flames on the board and put the Jets on their heels. Then a key sequence of events: A Jokinen penalty put the Flames on the power play, Ondrej Pavelec made a terrific left pad save of Mikael Backlund, a strong play along the boards by Frolik resulted in a penalty to Dennis Wideman, and while four-on-four Jacob Trouba with his fifth restored the four-goal lead. Pavelec would be superb the rest of the game as he kept the Flames from narrowing the gap, and has now won back to back games. Lance Bouma on a deflecction made it 5-2 but Pavlec kept the Flames from getting any closer.dddddddddddd Shots in the third were 11-7 Calgary. Jokinen, Ladd, Little, Thorburn, Scheifele and Wheeler all had two points each in the game as the Jets go back to back with five goals scored. Jets have seven players in double digits in goals, last year, after 48 games they had three. After a 14-point shortened season last year, Jokinen has 31 points, and 17 in his last 21 games.? Byfuglien extended his point streak to four games (2-4-6) and has 10 points in his last seven games, 15 points including six goals in his last 13 games. It was Byfugliens 499th NHL game. Scheifele has 6-11-17 in the last 19 games and continues to lead all NHL rookies in assists. Trouba led the Jets in ice time at 23:25. Byfuglien and Setoguchi each had five shots on goal. Little won 13-of-19 face-offs. Postgame, coach Maurice acknowledged how critical Pavelec was to the win with the saves early in the third. Maurice did call a time out at 4-1 to settle his team down. ”We needed to talk about how we were going to handle things going forward,” Maurice said. On the play of rookies Scheifele and Trouba: “They are players, not rookies. When I throw them over the boards its because they get what they have earned. Its been solid back to back games for Scheifele.” Maurice did not feel it was an easy win. “We respected how hard they work.” The Jets now play Edmonton at MTS Centre Saturday afternoon (TSN 1290), then head to California for the first time this season, into Anaheim Tuesday and then San Jose Thursday (both games TSN Jets, TSN 1290). VANCOUVERUFC president Dana White credits the rise of the companys flyweight division to a champion nicknamed after a cartoon character. “Every time he fights he gets better and better,” White said of Demetrious Johnson this week. “You talk about legacies – his legacy is going to be as the guy who built this division.” Known in the cage as “Mighty Mouse,” Johnson will look to continue that work on Saturday night at UFC 174 when he defends his title against Ali (Puncher) Bagautinov in the octagon at Rogers Arena – the first time a 125-pound division bout will anchor a pay-per view card. “Its awesome,” said the five-foot-three Johnson. “The UFC has given us a shot to headline a big pay-per view so Im pretty pumped to be the man to front that bill. Hopefully we can put on an exciting show on Saturday.” Johnson (19-2-1 all-time) won the UFCs inaugural flyweight title back in 2012 and has defended it three times since, including a knockout of Joseph Benavidez in December. The 27-year-old who fights out of Parkland, Wash., said the pressure of a pay-per view spectacle doesnt add any pressure to put on a show. “My jobs to go out there and fight,” said Johnson, who has a record of 7-1-1 in UFC. "If you look at all the flyweight fights, there hasnt been one boring one. Obviously theres boring fights in every single division. “But I havent sat there and watched a fight and thought, Man that was pretty boring.” Johnson said the five-foot-four Bagautinov (13-2, 3-0) will pose a unique challenge because the 29-year-old Russian specializes in Sambo fighting, a form of mixed martial arts that he has never faced. “In order to keep my belt Ive just got to go out there and be myself and just fight,” said Johnson, a heavy favourite in the eyes of bookmakers against the fourth-ranked challenger. “Regardless of whatever happens with this fight, whether I win or lose, the same thing is going to happen (afterwards). Im going to go home, relax and get ready for my next fight, whether its be defending my belt or trying to get it back.” Saturday nights co-main event has Canadas Rory (Ares) MacDonald taking on Tyron (The Chosen One) Woodley in a welterweight matchup between the No. 2- and No. 3-ranked challengers for Johny Hendricks belt. “Its the biggest fight ever for (MacDonald) and Woodley,” said White. “Saturday night is the night that both these two have got to go out and make people want to see them fight for the title.” The soft-spoken MacDonald — who was born in Quesnel B.C., but now fights out of Montreal and was mentored by Georges St-Pierre – said the Woodley fight is a chance to show he belongs at the top of the 170-pound division. “Its a big opportunity. Every fight you take is a big opportunity, but this on in particular,” said the 24-year-old. “Im facing a very talented opponent and Im very excited to be matched up against someone like that and challenge my techniques against his.” MacDonald (16-2, 7-2) lost to Robbie Lawler in a split decision at Novembers UFC 167, but rebounded to take a unanimous decision against Demian Maia at UFC 170 in February. “Losing can be a good thing in the long run for a mixed martial artist,” said MacDonald. “You learn your weaknesses and turn them into strengths.” A technically sound fighter who learned his craft at the famed Tristar Gym alongside St-Pierre in Montreal, MacDonald said he believes hes ready to take his game to the next level. “I want people to talk after my fights and be like Wow thats another Rory MacDonald I havent seen. Thats the best Rory MacDonald Ive seen so far. Thats my goal for this fight.” White said MacDonald needs to start turning some of the talk and hype surrounding his talents into consistent performances. “Rory has these moments where he comes out and does nothing,” said White. “The fight isnt exciting. He doesnt seem like hes got that killer instinct to finish a fight and get to that next level to be everything that GSP said about him.” The 32-year-old Woodley (13-2, 3-1), a former All-American wrestler, scored a technical knockout of Carlos Condit at UFC 171 in March and expects MacDonald to be the most well-rounded fighter he has faced. “Rory is a guy who started doing mixed martial arts all together,” said the St. Louis native. "I think thats the biggest challenge. He spent quite a bit of his youth as a teenager training (in) mixed martial arts. Hes had a great camp to train out of, hes had a champion to train under. I think those are the threats, but in actuality Ive had other fights and other fighters whove been a little bit more threatening than Rory. “If you cant really threaten me to freakin knock my head off like certain other guys Ive fought, I just dont get that anxiety.” Like MacDonald, Woodley added that he also sees Saturdays bout as a stepping stone to an eventual shot at the UFC welterweight title. “I plan on every fight from now on being me fighting for the title or defending the title,” he said. “Im just mentally getting prepared for that. I know that I have to beat guys like him consistently.” Its expected that Saturdays crowd at Rogers Arena should be on the side of the B.C.-born MacDonald, but his American opponent, perhaps naively, disagreed. “I really just dont think Rory MacDonald has this huge following in Vancouver like people think,” said Woodley. "Hes not Georges St-Pierre. This is not Montreal. “Vancouver fans like MMA and they might like me, they might like him, but I think they respect what I bring to the table and they respect that I respect him, and I think thats enough.” White called that view a little far-fetched. “I think hes super delusional if he thinks thats the case,” White said with a smile. “Were in Canada, man. Let me tell you what — Canadas going to be cheering for the Canadian.” Saturdays card also includes: light heavyweight Ryan (Darth) Bader against Rafael (Feijao) Cavalcante; heavyweight Andrei (The Pit Bull) Arlovski against Brendan (The Hybrid) Schaub; light heavyweight Ovince Saint Preux against Ryan (The Big Deal) Jimmo of Saint John, N.B.; welterweight Daniel Sarafian against Kiichi (Strasser) Kunimoto; womens bantamweight Valerie (Trouble) Letourneau of Montreal against Elizabeth Phillips; bantamweight Yves (Tiger) Jabouin against Mike (The Hulk) Easton; lightweight (Ragin) Kajan Johnson of Burns Lake, B.C., against Tae Hyun (Supernatural) Bang; bantamweight Roland Delorme of Winnipeg against Michinori Tanaka; and lightweight Jason Saggo of Toronto against Josh Shockley. The display produced a 117-101 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday, giving the Clippers their franchise record-tying 56th win of the regular season. Blake Griffin had 27 points and nine assists, DeAndre Jordan had 21 points and nine rebounds, and Chris Paul added 17 points and 10 assists. “Were still playing for something,” Paul said. “We can keep building confidence on defence. Were at our best when were running and getting stops.” J.J. Redick had 13 points and Matt Barnes scored 12 in helping the Clippers improve to 33-7 at Staples Center, breaking the franchise record for home victories in a season. “When we got stops, got out and moved the ball from side to side, we were able to get what we wanted,” Griffin said. “Thats the key for us, just playing our offence and not letting what they do dictate our game.” Los Angeles completed a season sweep of the Kings and has won seven straight against them at home. “I just hated our defence,” Sacramento coach Mike Malone said. DeMarcus Cousins had his seventh straight double-double with 32 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Kings, who lost their fifth in a row in their last road game of the season. Rudy Gay scored 16 points, and former Clipper Reggie Evans had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Cousins and Ben McLemore combined to score 24 of the Kings 32 points in the third quarter, including their last 20. McLemore hit consecutive 3-pointers, the second one just beating the clock at the end of the period, to leave the Kings trailing 85-79 going into the fourth.dddddddddddd “We couldnt get any stops,” Malone said. “Defensively, they just got whatever they wanted. It was just layup after layup after layup.” McLemore finished with 14 points, hitting all six of his free throws, before getting his second technical and being ejected with 10:51 left in the game. “Thats the crazy thing about it,” he said. “Ive never gotten kicked out of a game in my life.” The Kings closed within two on a three-point play by Cousins in the fourth. The Clippers answered with a 12-2 run to go up 103-91, capped by Jamal Crawfords back-to-back 3-pointers. He landed in the lap of courtside fans after the first one. “Those two 3s Mal hit were backbreakers,” Paul said. Crawford returned after missing five straight games with a sore left Achilles tendon. He finished with 10 points in 20 minutes. “I felt good, rusty obviously, but my teammates did a good job getting me easy looks,” he said. Los Angeles outscored the Kings 25-5 on fastbreak points and 54-42 in the paint. “When a team lives in your paint, especially a good team like they are, youre going to have a hard time beating them,” Malone said. Téma: Jak postupovat / e two days after the Kings got

We often speak of moments when it comes to football. The 90-plus minutes of play are about trends and approach. A lot happens in that span, altering the course of a game. There is an epidemic emerging among onlookers focusing on useless stats, some with meaning but few telling the true story. Its the moments that define a match and decide its fate. Two particular moments Sunday not only defined their respective matches, but also the tournament as a whole. No minute played will ever encapsulate the positive nature of this tournament better than in time added between Switzerland and Ecuador in Brasilia. With the match level at 1-1, the South American side saw weakness in an underperforming Swiss team and nobly was pushing for a winner. Antonio Valencia found space down the right side and played a good ball to Michael Arroyo inside the top of the box. Arroyos touch was heavy and the Ecuadorian hesitated. That moment of indecision gave Swiss central midfielder Valon Behrami time to get stuck in, coming to the rescue with a picture perfect game saving tackle. Behrami, who struggled throughout the match, didnt stop there. He started the counter-attack from inside his own box with purpose, sprinting with the ball down the middle of the field. Behrami was met by a crunching challenge, a clear foul by any standard. Behrami went down but wasnt out. Many players in that situation would have stayed down, waited for the whistle and killed off the match and settle for the point, but not Behrami. The midfielder immediately jumped to his feet and carried on his run. Huge credit goes to the referee, Ravshan Irmatov of Uzbekistan, who refereed a very good match. No moment was better than allowing play to continue after the foul. Advantage earned, advantage given. So many officials in the game are over-anxious, especially when a player goes down, to blow their whistle and halt proceedings. Irmatov read the play, was patient and the game carried on. It was truly expert officiating. Switzerland carried on their move. Within seconds, the ball was played wide right by Behrami. The ball kept moving, with the switch of play on. Ricardo Rodriguez had been flying down the left flank all day long. He was open and he got the ball. Rodriguez took a touch, brought his head up and played a perfect ball to the near post. Substitute Haris Seferovic obliged, making the near-post run, getting on the end of the weighted pass to knock in the winner with seconds to play. It was spectacular football in all phases of the build-up and worthy of the game winning goal on any occasion, let alone in World Cup play. It was excellence personified, from the tackle to the fair play, from the officiating to the counter-attack and the finish. The end result may be harsh on Ecuador. They deserved something from a match well played. A goal in such a manner can only sting so much. It was a defining moment for all thats good and right in the game of football. The second defining moment came between France and Honduras in a rugged, physical match where Honduras was content to kick and hack. The ‘H on their jerseys must stand for hatchet job. It was largely disgraceful. Nevermind the overall quality of the match, it was the moment goal-line technology made its true arrival at the World Cup and signals progressive change, benefiting the game to the highest degree. In the 48th minute and France up 1-0, Karim Benzema broke in and put the ball off the post, rebounding off goalkeeper Noel Valladares before it appeared to cross the goal-line. Benzema celebrated, but was it a goal? In a matter of seconds, referee Emerson De Carvalho pointed to half and the goal was ruled ‘good. De Carvalho was notified immediately of the good goal call and pointed to half. The viewer may have been confused, but there was no indecision by the officiating crew. It took a minute and ten seconds for the video replay to show on the screen. Initial panic on Twitter was complete nonsense, as the first goal-line review showed ‘no goal. Those who were patient enough came to realize the first adjudication had nothing to do with the ball of the post, and that two goal decisions using the technology were needed. The second review came after the ball went off the back of Valladares. By the slimmest of margins, the video showed the ball had crossed the line. The margin for error with the technology is said to be plus- or minus-1.5cm. The ball couldnt have crossed the line by much more than that. But we have to trust the technology. There is no point using it if we dont. Honduras Head Coach Luis Fernandez Suarez unsurprisingly protested. French Head Coach Didier Deschamps tried to explain, but how do you plead for common sense to someone acting irrational? Arguing against goal-line technology is like arguing against gravity: It is nonsensical. The call was right. There is no point arguing. After the protests ceased, the match carried on. It took two minutes, thirty seconds total to go through the process, celebrate and calm emotions. Two minutes, thirty seconds to make sure the call was right. This was no Frank Lampard foot-over-the-line in Bloemfontein we are talking about here. It was mere centimeters. The debate is done. Good goal and we move on. This stands as a watershed moment for FIFA and world soccer. For goal-line technology to work so effectively on the world stage is a testament to progression in the game. It is an overwhelming success and must be instituted in all major leagues, worldwide. It begs the question what else this technology can be used for and how far the game is willing to go with technology. Offside calls? Perhaps thats the next step in the evolution of the game, to get the call right. These were two very different moments, but two tremendously important ones. The World Cup continues to live up to all the hype. There have been 37 goals in 11 matches, the most through this many games since 1958. Three goals or more have been scored in 10 out of the 11 matches played and in the game there were not three goals, two were disallowed that should have stood. The tournament has been spectacular. With moments like these, we can truly call it the beautiful game. Sit back and enjoy. SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For two teams that only face each other twice a year, Sacramento and Boston sure played like longtime rivals. Kings centre DeMarcus Cousins and the Celtics Kris Humphries were hit with technical fouls after tussling for a rebound in the first half, part of a game-long battle between the two big men that at times looked more suitable for a rugby field. Sacramentos Carl Landry was called for a flagrant foul in the fourth quarter after sending Jerryd Bayless crashing to the floor to stop a fast break. At least Bayless and Sacramento guard Isaiah Thomas kept their cool, a change from when the two teams met in Boston earlier this month. Thomas scored 21 points and matched his career high with 12 assists, Rudy Gay added eight of his 22 points over the final six minutes and the Kings beat the Celtics 105-98 Saturday night. “We were poised down the stretch and thats really the thing that sealed the game,” said Cousins, who had 13 points and seven points after sitting out Wednesdays 101-92 loss to Golden State. “They beat us on the offensive boards a lot, our turnovers hurt us a lot … but through it all what I think saved the game was the more poised team, and that was us tonight.” Not all the time. At one point in the second half, Cousins crashed into Humphries as the two men were running down the court and then gave the Celtics centre a hard shove. “Guys were playing very physical, but thats just how it is sometimes,” Thomas said. “The only time it was a little chippy in Boston was me and Bayless. But today it seemed like it was everybody, even the refs. We played through it the best we could.” The Celtics, playing without starters Rajon Rondo and Jared Sullinger, struggled to keep their cool. Bostons frustrations boiled over late in the fourth quarter, when Gerald Wallace and coach Brad Stevens were ejected with 35 seconds left to play. “It was a long game, a lot of possessions and a lot of things happened,” Stevens said. “We still had a chance to win.” Despite being short-handed, the Celtics managed to keep it close and tied the game at 85-all following Kelly Olynyks free throw with 6:23 remaining. Rudy Gay helped Sacramento pull away. After a free throw from Cousins broke the tie, Gay made a pair of long jumpers, sank a pair of free throws then scoreed on a layup to make it 99-91.dddddddddddd Jeff Green stopped the run with two free throws, but Thomas made six straight free throws down the stretch to secure the win. “Its a physical game and we cant let people get under our skin and get in the way of what were trying to do,” said Sacramento coach Michael Malone, whose team had 18 turnovers. “Well take the win, but we have to get a lot better.” Derrick Williams and Carl Landry scored 10 points apiece off the bench for Sacramento. The Kings never trailed and limited the Celtics to one basket over the final 7 1/2 minutes after Boston tied the game midway through the fourth quarter. Green scored 29 on 7-of-25 shooting for the Celtics. Humphries added 19, while Bayless had 16 off the bench. Rondo was resting on the tail end of a back-to-back while Sullinger — who had 31 points against Sacramento earlier this season — is experiencing from concussion-like symptoms after getting hit by an elbow from the Los Angeles Lakers Chris Kaman on Friday night. Down to nine players, the Celtics got off to a slow start and couldnt catch up. Sacramento held Boston to 16 points in the first quarter, led by as many as 16 and limited the Celtics to 34 per cent shooting before the break. Sacramento also was short-handed. The Kings announced before the game that Jason Terry will spend the remainder of the season rehabilitating his left knee. The announcement came two days after the Kings got Terry and Reggie Evans from the Brooklyn Nets for guard Marcus Thornton. The Kings led the entire first half and were up 49-33 with 2:28 left following a pair of free throws by Cousins. Green, who missed 10 of his first 13 shots, made a pair of mid-range jumpers and added a 3-pointer to cut the gap to 51-43 by halftime. NOTES: Cousins said his hip is continuing to bother him. “I had to do a couple of exercises on the sideline just to loosen it back up,” he said. “It tightened up on me during the game a few times. Its bothering me a lot right now. Just running up the floor was tough.” … Thomas double-double was his sixth of the season. … Gay scored 20 or more points for the 18th time in 31 games since being traded to Sacramento. … Boston remained winless on its four-game road trip. … Green missed his first nine shots from the field but made a career-high 13 free throws. VANCOUVER — Toronto FC head coach Ryan Nelsen was surprised to see star striker Jermain Defoe left off Englands 23-man World Cup squad, but he knows that snub could pay dividends in the long run for their Major League Soccer outfit. Defoe failed to make England manager Roy Hodgsons team announced Monday, instead being named to a seven-man standby list that will only be used in the event of injuries in the leadup to the tournament in Brazil. The 31-year-old Defoe is healthy, scoring goals in MLS and could well take out his frustration at being left out by Hodgson on opponents in North America. “You never like to take benefit from other peoples agony, if you know what I mean,” Nelsen said Tuesday. “If Jermain stays with us, hes probably going to be motivated to prove a lot of people wrong, which I suppose is nice for us.” That could come as early as Wednesday night when Toronto FC visits the Vancouver Whitecaps in the second leg of the Amway Canadian Championship semifinal. Toronto holds a 2-1 lead after a victory at home in the first leg last week. Even though its a boost for his team, Nelsen also couldnt hide his disappointment. “Obviously devastated for Jermain. Its surprising,” he said. “I dont know how Roy Hodgson picks his team. Its a surprising decision — gutted for the man. I know Ive played against all those guys and I know with 10, 15 minutes to go in a World Cup, I know who Id want with the ball at his feet in front of the net.” Defoe said he was stunned not to be heading to Brazil after figuring into all but two of Hodgsons matchday squads prior to this announcement. “I was shocked, like you can imagine,” Defoe said after training at B.C. Place Stadium. “Especially when youve been involved in every squad, and then for some reason youre not included. But (I) always remain positive and just continue doing what Im doing. Ive come over here and done exactly what I used to do at home and thats play well and score goals.” A veteran of the 2010 World Cup who has scored 19 times in 55 games for his country, Defoe added that he didnt think his move from the English Premier League to MLS had anything to do with Hodgsons decision. “Ive been here two months. Does it really change much? I dont think so,” he said. “I mentioned before the squad was announced that the manager, he knows most of the players, even before he was manager. He knows the players. I think the fact of me being here two months, that shouldnt play a factor at all.” England is bringing four strikers to the World Cup, including Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck and Rickie Lambert. Defoe said that despite this disappointment, he will remain available for England selection. “Im not going to retire (from the national team) just because someone doesnt put me in a squad,” he said. "I would never do that. I would never turn my back on my country because I still feel like Ive got a lot to offer. The games Ive played and just being involved with England over the years, its been great. “I think my record speaks for itself and Ill just try and continue to work hard and enjoy my football.” Defoe will remain with Toronto FC and only join up with England if called upon. He added that Hodgson told him: “He wants to go with the young kids. Thats it.” Toronto midfielder Michael Bradley, who was named to the U.S. 30-man provisional roster and will leave to meet up with the American camp after Wednesdays game in Vancouver, said he was disappointed for his club teammate. “He and I have developed a really good relationship since weve come (to Toronto), both on the field and off the field,” said Bradley, who along with Defoe, joined Toronto FC in a big-money off-season deal. "Ive seen first-hand what a great player he is, what a great person he is and I know how much it meant to him, so on a personal level I know were all really disappointed for him. “Hes taken it exactly how youd expect — committed and ready to keep going, keep fighting, keep scoring goals here and do as much as he can to help us win in Toronto.” With about a month to go before the World Cup, Defoe said he will continue to work hard in MLS and see what happens. “Its still a long way to go. You never know what happens, people get injured, but at the same time if it doesnt happen, then it doesnt happen,” he said. “I wish the team good luck, all the young players that are in the squad, I wish them good luck because Ive had that experience, been at a World Cup, and its the best feeling ever. Its special.” 20:21ET 13-05-14 cheap jerseys . Maxime Presseaults goal at 13:59 of the second period broke a 2-2 deadlock for the Foreurs, who trailed the series 3-2 before winning back-to-back games, and Guillaume Gelinas and Pierre-Maxime Poudrier also scored. Teague one handed three pointerTheres something to be said about having the nerve to go up and take a shot from downtown late in a close playoff game, but what is there really to say when that shot is one handed? Teague answers that question with a simple Jordan like shrug of the shoulders. wholesale jerseys . But the left-hander knows that getting to this point — nearly two years removed from shoulder surgery — was anything but easy. This is how they describe their version of the puck. “The Aalto Puck is made in the same material as a regular hockey puck and behaves in the same way on ice with one fundamental difference. It has a built in randomness, it doesnt bounce as a regular puck, it can, depending on how its hit, speed off in different ways and more importantly, by adding an element of chance its the most equal puck produced.dddddddddddd Advantages are randomly given to either of the two competing teams. By adding the element of chance this small puck changes the big picture.” To be honest, this will be a very hard idea to get past hockey purest, however evolutionary thinking always does cause a big stir in the beginning. Stay away. He wanted the shutout. And he certainly got it, the first one of his stellar young career, but there was no way Collins was not going to check out his prized pitcher. Harvey proved himself with a warmup toss, then he got All-Star Troy Tulowitzki to pop up a 91 mph slider for the final out of his first complete game, a four-hitter, and New York beat the Colorado Rockies 5-0 Wednesday night. “I dont like when they come on the field at all so I was trying to shoo them off as quick as I could,” said Harvey, who had a big ice wrap on his knee. “I felt fine, I wanted to finish the game.” Harvey said the ball just grazed his knee — even if it shot into shallow right field. Collins had a different view. “He must have thought I was blind if he thought I thought that glanced off that his leg,” Collins said. “I knew it hit him good.” Harvey (9-3) earned the shutout in his 33rd career start. He pitched nine innings of one-hit ball on May 7 but New York lost in 10. Not this time. Rookie third baseman Wilmer Flores helped make sure of that. Filling in for injured David Wright, Flores cleared the bases in the eighth against Manny Corpas with a three-run double for his first big league RBIs. “I think I was a little more relaxed,” Flores said a night after going 0 for 4 in his debut. Omar Quintanilla and John Buck each had RBI singles off Jhoulys Chacin (10-6), who lost for just the third time in his last 11 starts. Flores got his first big league hit and scored on Quintanillas hit in the second inning. Flores went 2 for 4. The Rockies lost for the eighth time in nine games on their 10-game road trip. They lost All-Star left fielder Carlos Gonzalez to the disabled list before the game then learned that Thursday starter Tyler Chatwood was going on the DL with elbow inflammation. His start was pushed back this week because of a hamstring injury. He tested it in a bullpen session Tuesday but had elbow trouble Wednesday. Manager Walt Weiss was not sure who would start Thursday against the Mets. “Tylers been real good for us,” Weiss said. “When it rains it pours.” Harvey came out for the ninth to loud cheers. And they grew with each out. He retired pinch-hitter Corey Dickerson on a groundout to shortstop Quintanilla. Then Dexter Fowler grounded out to short. The fans stood and chanted “Lets Go Harvey!” when Charlie Blackmon stepped in. The cheers turned to groans when Blackmon lined the pitch off Harveys knee. After his warmup toss, Harvey got Tulowitzki to pop out to secoond base on his 106th pitch for the final out.dddddddddddd “Its awesome,” Harvey said of his first shutout. “As a starting pitcher thats what you shoot for every time.” The 24-year-old right-hander struck out six without walking a batter. In his previous outing, Harvey lost to a most surprising nemesis, the Miami Marlins. In four starts this season against the Marlins, he is 0-1 with a 3.52 ERA. Against the rest of the majors, he is 9-2 with a stingy 1.84 ERA. Miami tagged him for three runs in 5 2-3 innings on Thursday, but he was in command from the start against Colorado. “He was dirty,” Colorados Todd Helton said. “He was as good as Ive seen in a long time.” Wilin Rosario grounded a single past a lunging Quintanilla with two outs in the second inning for the Rockies first baserunner. Michael Cuddyer became the next Rockies player to reach with a two-out single to centre field in the fourth. Harvey then set down 11 in a row before Nolan Arenado reached on an infield single. Replays, however, showed the throw from shortstop Quintanilla just beat Arenado. No worries. Harvey got D.J. LeMahieu to ground into a 6-4-3 double play with his 91st pitch. The Mets have said they are going to limit Harveys innings and when Jonathon Niese comes back Sunday the team will go to a six-man rotation for a while to help limit but. On this night, Collins wasnt worried. “He deserved to go back out there,” Collins said. “Ill worry about making up those innings later.” Chacin was nearly as good, doing it with guile instead of power. Barely reaching 90 on the stadium scoreboard, while Harvey routinely touched the mid-90s, Chacin struck out five and walked one in seven innings. He had little trouble with the top of the Mets order but the bottom caused the trouble. Flores and Buck had two hits apiece. “I got behind in the second (inning) and had to throw fastballs for strikes,” Chacin said. “Thats why 6-7-8 were able to get those runs off of me.” Ike Davis hit an opposite-field double down the left field line with one out and scored an out later on righty swinging Bucks single to right field for a 2-0 lead. Batting sixth, Flores hit a ground rule double in the eighth off Corpas in centre field to put New York up 5-0. NOTES: Mets OF Lucas Duda (muscle strain in rib cage) was recalled from his rehab assignment and optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas. Duda has been on the DL since June 22. Duda went 7 for 45 (.156) with one HR and six RBIs in his rehab. … The Rockies recalled LHP Jeff Francis from Triple-A Colorado Springs. … When Harvey got his fourth strikeout, the Mets flashed on the videoboard “ZackKKKK,” for the Mets other young ace, Zack Wheeler. SAN ANTONIO — The Spurs beat the Heat. Miami couldnt beat the heat. And there was the story of Game 1 of the NBA Finals. With LeBron James unable to play in the final 3:59 because of cramps throughout the left side of his body, and on a night where an air conditioning failure inside San Antonios arena had temperatures hovering near 90 degrees, the Heat simply withered in the final minutes. As their four-time MVP could only watch, Miami watched as San Antonio pulled away in the final minutes for a 110-95 win on Thursday night in the opener of the title series. “Its frustration and theres anger,” James said as he lay on a training table long after the game. "But at the same time, its something you try to prevent, you try to control. I got all the fluids I needed to get. I did my normal routine Ive done. Its something that was inevitable for me tonight. “It just sucks not being out there for your team, especially at this point of the season.” James scored the last of his 25 points on a layup that got Miami within two. That was the end of his night; he stood still on the baseline afterward, unable to move his left leg because of cramping. His night was over, and soon, so was the game. The Spurs outscored the Heat by 13 the rest of the way, and took the series-opener for the second straight finals. The Heat were outscored 36-17 in the fourth quarter. Dwyane Wade scored 19 points, Chris Bosh added 18 and Ray Allen scored 16 for Miami. Rashard Lewis added 10 for the Heat. “I think it felt like a punch in the gut when you see your leader limping like that back to the bench,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “But at the same time we still had an opportunity.” James has dealt with cramping issues several times in the past, including during the 2012 NBA Finals against Oklahoma City — in a game in Miami. “Were used to having the hotter arena,” Spoelstra said. Spoelstra insisted that the Heat would not use the temperature as an excuse, and said James tried to return to the game shortly after the cramp knocked him out. “I just looked at him and said, Dont even think about it. You cant even move,” Spoelstra said. James didnt need much convincing. He knew. Cramps, he said, were affecting nearly the whole left side of his body. “Any little step or nudge, it would get worse,” James said. “It would lock up even worse. My muscles would just spasm at a 10 out of 10.” Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Tony Parker added 19 points and Manu Ginobili finished with 16 points and 11 assists for San Antonio, which improved to 10-1 at home in the playoffs. James was affected throughout the second half, asking for breaks more than once, and some players placed ice bags on the backs of their necks in an effort to combat the temperature. Duncan said the heat was a significant factor in the game. “I dont know what happened to LeBron, but I think all of us were feeling the heat,” Duncan said. “We were all dehydrated.” If there is a bright side for James — who used cold towels, drank what he could and even changed uniforms at halftime — its that Game 2 isnt until Sunday. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich acknowledged afterward that James departure obviously played a role in the finish, though lauded the way his team executed in the deciding minutes. “Certainly could have been a different story. Theres no doubt about that,” Popovich said. Its not the first time electricity has had a significant impact on a championship event in recent years. The Super Bowl in 2013 between Baltimore and San Francisco was marred by a power outage at the Superdome in New Orleans, interrupting play for 34 minutes. Power was the culprit in Game 1 of the finals as well, arena officials said. “An electrical failure for the power that runs the AC system in the AT&T Center has occurred,” Spurs Sports and Entertainment said in a statement distributed in the second half. “We are continuing to work on resolving the problem. We apologize for any inconvenience.” Many fans removed the giveaway black T-shirts handed out before the game, obviously wanting to wear as few layers inside the steamy building as possible. “Not NBA Finals worthy,” Wade said of the conditions in the locker room afterward. “Ill tell you that. This is crazy.” cheap jerseys . Mata had already been dropped from Spains squad once this season and with the country blessed with so many playmakers, he was in real danger of being overlooked for the trip to Brazil to defend their title. This week, topics cover the Blue Jays rotation, the futures John Gibbons and Alex Anthopoulos, protecting pitchers and a bonus question on his predictions for the MLB playoffs. nfl jerseys china . — One of the byproducts of quarterback Matt McGloins rise to the top of Oaklands depth chart last week was the production of rookie tight end Mychal Rivera.CHICAGO — Nick Markakis preserved the lead on defence and then enlarged it at the plate. The right fielder hit a two-run homer after preventing one with a leaping catch, sending the Baltimore Orioles to an 8-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night. While offence usually is the focus, Markakis didnt hesitate when asked which moment felt better. “Robbing a two-run homer,” he said, “especially in that situation.” Nelson Cruz and J.J. Hardy each added a solo shot as the Orioles upped their AL East lead to 7 1/2 games over the idle New York Yankees. Cruz hit his 32nd homer, passing White Sox rookie Jose Abreu for the American League lead. Cruz is tied with Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins for most in the majors. Markakis was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs, but everyone in the Baltimore locker room was talking about his clutch catch. “That was big,” manager Buck Showalter said. “The score wont look like it, but obviously it was a big play.” The Orioles entered the bottom of the seventh with a 3-0 lead after starter Bud Norris (11-7) retired 17 of his first 18 batters. But he quickly found himself in trouble in the seventh after hitting Alejandro De Aza with a pitch and giving up a double to Alexei Ramirez that put runners on second and third with the heart of the Chicago lineup coming up. Abreu flied out to shallow centre and Adam Dunn struck out. It appeared Norris might escape with his shutout intact, but Avisail Garcias two-run single made it 3-2. Conor Gillaspie followed with a drive to deep right field, where Markakis raced back to the fence and made a leaping grab. “I thought I had a shot at it all the way,” he said. "I was going after it. I was doing everything I can to catch it, with the situation of the game and the way Bud was pitching. “It helped us out tremendously and kind of took the wind out of their sails a little bit.” The Orioles then broke it open with a five-run eighth..ddddddddddddJonathan Schoop doubled in three runs and Markakis hit a two-run homer to cap the rally. Chicago ace Chris Sale (10-3) took the loss, yielding three runs and eight hits in six innings. He has dropped two straight decisions. The Orioles are the only AL team he hasnt beaten in his career. “We were a great outfielder away from potentially winning that game,” Sale said. TRAINERS ROOM Orioles: 3B Manny Machado will miss at least another week with a sprained right knee he sustained while taking a swing last Monday. Theres no timetable for his return. Machado didnt play this season until May 1 because of surgery on his left knee in the off-season. White Sox: CF Adam Eaton (strained right oblique) continues to make progress and the hope is hell be ready to return when hes eligible to be activated from the 15-day disabled list Sunday. Eaton, though, is likely to go to the minors for a rehab stint before then. UP NEXT In the second game of the series Tuesday night, Orioles RHP Chris Tillman (9-5, 3.68 ERA) faces LHP Jose Quintana (6-9, 3.14). ALL DUNN? Adam Dunns four-year, $40 million contract is up at the end of this season and the White Sox slugger hinted Monday there is a possibility he could retire. Dunn, who turns 35 in November, has 459 homers and could move way up the career list by sticking around a few more years (hes just three from tying Jose Canseco for 34th place). But he said numbers, even the possibility of hitting 500 homers, wont be a determining factor. “Its going to be a decision where Im going to sit down with the people who are important to me and make a quick decision,” Dunn said. “Whether its tomorrow (or) whether its February, I dont know.” WAITING GAME RHP Miguel Gonzalez, sent to the minors Aug. 9, is expected to be back with the Orioles this weekend to start against the Cubs. Gonzalez threw a simulated game in the minors Monday — Double-A Bowie had the day off — to prepare for the potential assignment. WASHINGTON — Ryan Zimmerman came forward to make a head-high running catch on a slicing line drive off the bat of Chase Utley, a routine play that drew a disproportionately grand ovation from the home fans. “Thats almost the awkward part of it,” Zimmerman said. “Yeah, I caught the ball. Yeah, like, I can catch a fly ball.” He might have been embarrassed by all the fuss, but it was nevertheless a landmark moment in career of the player long considered the face of the Washington Nationals franchise. It was his first putout as an outfielder after more than 1,100 games as a third baseman, part of a good night all around for him and his club Tuesday in a 7-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Jordan Zimmermann rebounded from a mini-slump to throw eight scoreless innings, Zimmerman hit a pair of doubles and handled his two chances with aplomb in left field, and the Nationals moved back to .500 by taking the opener of the three-game series. “Theres nothing like getting into the first game and getting a couple of balls,” Zimmerman said. “And getting a couple of hits helped, too.” Zimmermann (4-2) allowed five hits and struck out four, recovering well from four middling starts that had raised his usually impeccable ERA to 4.07. He got all the support he needed when the Nationals scored three in the third inning off David Buchanan (1-2), making his third career start. “May was a pretty rough month for me, and hopefully June has better things to come,” Zimmermann said. “I wanted to go nine, but eightll be good enough.” Zimmerman went 2 for 4 with one RBI after being reinstated before the game following 44 games on the disabled list with a broken right thumb. Of greater interest was his move to the outfield, a switch necessitated by his throwing problems and the need for a strong hitter to play left field while Bryce Harper recovers from thumb surgery. Zimmerman said he was initially hesitant to try the outfield, but he realized his chronic shoulder problems mean his days as a regular third baseman are numbered. Ever the team player, he said he just wanted to help the club win — even if theres likely not a Gold Glove in it for him, like the one he won playing third in 2009. “I feel like Im athletic enough to at least blend in,” he said. “And not cause problems.” Like many infielders-turned-outfielders before him, he learned the action isnt as fast and furious when stationed 300 feet from home plate. Playing deeper than a usual left fielder and using a glove borrowed from teammate Jayson Werth, he fielded only the liner from Utley and a shallow flyout by Marlon Byrd in the sixth before being removed for defensive replacement Nate McLouth after seven innings. There was no complaint about the lack of work. “That means our pitchers are doing a good job,” Zimmerman said. “I just catch what comes to me.” Its Zimmermans bat thats really needed by the Nationals, who slumped at the plate for most of last month and have been hovering around .500 in the NL East. They started hitting better in a weekend series against the Texas Rangers, however, and have scored 26 runs in their last four games. Zimmerman doubled to left in the second and to right in the fifth, and each time a black padded glove was brought to him to wear to protect his thumb as he ran the bases. Werth added a two-run double in the third, Denard Span had three hits, and Ian Desmond and Anthony Rendon homered for the Nationals. The Phillies lost their fourth straight and were shut out for the eighth time this season, failing to get any impetus from a pregame team meeting called by manager Ryne Sandberg. Sandberg addressed focus and fundamentals, but theres only so much the manager could do about Zimmermanns mid-90s fastball and debilitating slider. Philadelphia is 9-18 since May 4. “We werent able to get anything going offensively, got shut down by a good pitcher,” Sandberg said. “He kind of set the tone for the game.” NOTES: The Phillies optioned RHP Phillippe Aumont to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and recalled RHP Ethan Martin from Lehigh Valley. … Philadelphia signed RHP Jason Marquis to a minor league contract. He will report to Class-A Clearwater for extended spring training. … Nationals LHP Gio Gonzalez, on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed pitching shoulder, will make a rehab start with Single-A Potomac on Friday. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Kerry, How does Alex Galchenyuk get called for tripping Carl Hagelin in the neutral zone in the second period? Where was the official watching this from? Looked like Hagelin took a dive over Galchenyuks foot! Martin,Peterborough, ON Martin: Carl Hagelin did not deliberately take a dive or embellish his fall in an attempt to draw a penalty as he picked up a loose puck on a turnover at the red line. Hagelin made a sweeping cut turn as he attempted to reverse his direction toward the Montreal zone and in doing so both of his skates made independent contact with the left skate blade of Alex Galchenyuk. Hagelins lose of balance, forward momentum and attempt to advance the puck as he was falling contributed to an impression some might hold that the Rangers player took a dive. In the eyes of one referee it was deemed a trip and resulted in a power play goal. Referee Dan OHalloran trailed the play out of the Montreal end zone on the players bench side after Andrei Markov flipped the puck into the neutral zone. When the skate contact between Hagelin and Galchenyuk occurred, OHalloran was approximately mid to three quarters toward the Habs blue line and looking directly into and through neutral zone player traffic. From this location the referee would not have been able to draw an angle on the play and erroneously determined that Galchenyuk had committed a tripping infraction. Hindsight is, as they say, 20/20 and you can be certain that the referee wishes he had not perceived the play as he did. This play demonstrates the magnitude and potential consequence that a penalty call can have on a game and possibly even a series. Hockey is an extremely fast paced game. We know that officials, players and coaches make mistakes. In an effort to minimize errors in judgment the official needs to find the very best location in advance to judge a play; to find that perfect “replay angle” in real time whenever humanly possible. I have often referenced an officials positioning in answer to your questions. One aspect of officiating that I havent written about much (and probably more important than having your feet in the right place) is for the official to have his head in the right place to avoid overreacting or being fooled on a play. It is crucial that every official sustain a rock-solid level of concentration throughout the game; especially as he deals with self-imposed pressure and excessive amounts of pressure exerted upon him externally. We often hear broadcasters refer to a high level of “energy or intensity” that is displayed by a player or team. A referee observes the game as it is being played in the moment; but more importantly, he must “think” the game with an “intensity of focus and concentration” that doesnt allow for any distractions to adversely affect his judgment. The referees perception of a play becomes his reality. He must silence the crowd in his head by letting the noise pass through his ears as a meaningless background effect. The ref must also move on from confrontations with players and coaches to keep his mental awareness where it belongs. To accomplish this task, an internal running dialogue or play-by-play commentary can be implemented by the referee to remain focused. (I often implemented this procedure to intensify my focus and concentration.) An official that sustains a state of intense concentration is much less likely to overreact or misread a play. A referee that is dialed into the zone can better differentiate between legitimate fouls and allowable contact in all locations on the ice. Finally, there cant be any guess work at this time of the season. If a ref is not 100 per cent sure a foul was committed, he should never raise his arm. Then, in a flash everything changed. Bradley Beal came on strong late in regulation to finish with 26 points, Nene scored six of his 17 points in overtime and the Wizards beat the Chicago Bulls 101-99 Tuesday to take a 2-0 lead in their first-round series. Game 3 is Friday at Washington. “Weve got to come out like were down 0-1 or 0-2,” said Beal, who scored 11 in the fourth quarter. “Weve got to have that sense of urgency and just that drive and that motivation like we did early. Weve got to be able to maintain that lead. Weve got to continue to stay poised.” The Wizards couldnt maintain a 17-point first-quarter lead and had to rally from 10 down in the fourth. Nene scored the first six points in overtime after being held in check by Defensive Player of the Year Joakim Noah in regulation, and the Wizards hung on after Kirk Hinrich failed to convert at the foul line in the closing seconds of overtime. Noah had just hit two free throws when Beal missed a jumper with 18 seconds left. Jimmy Butler got the rebound and Chicago called time. Hinrich, a 76 per cent free throw shooter this season, had a chance to tie it after getting fouled by Nene on a drive with 2.4 seconds left. But his first attempt hit the rim. He deliberately missed the second, and Trevor Ariza grabbed the rebound to seal the win for Washington. “I went up there thinking I was going to knock them down,” Hinrich said. “Tonight, I just couldnt do it. However, I really felt that I shouldve made the layup.” D.J. Augustin led Chicago with 25 points but cooled off late in the game with Ariza guarding him. Taj Gibson had 22 points and 10 rebounds. Noah added 20 points and 12 boards, but the Bulls find themselves in a huge hole after dropping two at home. They blew a 13-point lead in Game 1 and couldnt hang on after rallying in this one. Both times, they struggled in the fourth quarter, and coach Tom Thibodeau bristled when asked if he might switch up hhis late-game rotation.dddddddddddd “We look at everything,” he said. “Unreal.” John Wall had 16 points and seven assists for Washington. The Bulls appeared to be in good shape when they were leading 87-77 five minutes into the fourth. They were still leading, 91-85, when Beal shot the Wizards back into the game. He nailed a 3-pointer that made it 91-88 and added a floater to make it a one-point game. Then, with a chance to put Washington ahead, he hit 1 of 2 free throws with 52.9 seconds left to tie it at 91. Both teams had opportunities to win it in the closing seconds but couldnt convert. “I think we did a great job staying calm and composed,” Wall said. “Early in the season, we would get rattled and guys would try to make plays one on one on their own. Tonight, we trusted in our offence like weve been doing.” The Bulls were leading 87-77 after a driving layup by Noah and two free throws by Butler with 6:59 left regulation. But with Beal going off, the Wizards made a run. “I cant take a lot of credit for the fourth quarter,” said Beal, who scored 11 in the fourth after quiet second and third quarters. "I think we got a lot of offensive rebounds and kickouts, and John hit me on a couple. I was fortunate to be able to knock down some, and I just stayed with it. NOTES: Only three teams have dropped Games 1 and 2 at home and won a series: the 1968-69 Lakers, 1993-94 Rockets and the 2004-05 Dallas Mavericks. … Dikembe Mutombo presented the Defensive Player of the Year award to Noah, who hoisted the trophy above his head to loud cheers before the game. … Thibodeau praises San Antonios Gregg Popovich and Phoenixs Jeff Hornacek after they took the top two spots in the Coach of the Year vote. As for the guy who finished third? “Hes terrible,” he joked. Thibodeau, of course, took the third spot after guiding the Bulls to 48 wins. It might have been his best coaching job yet, with another knee injury curtailing Derrick Roses comeback and Luol Deng getting traded away. LAUSANNE, Switzerland - Luis Suarez has been told to expect a verdict next week in his appeal against a FIFA ban for biting an opponent at the World Cup. The Uruguay and Barcelona forward signed autographs for young fans waiting outside the Court of Arbitration for Sport after a six-hour hearing Friday, then left in a car without speaking to reporters. The panel “informed the parties that it will issue its decision as soon as possible, probably before the end of next week.” Barcelona begins the Spanish league season in two weeks. MILAN – Javier Zanettis last home match at the San Siro was celebrated with a win as Inter Milan beat Lazio 4-1 to all but guarantee a Europa League berth from the Serie A on Saturday. Zanetti will retire after 19 seasons at Inter, and the stadium was sold out as fans packed in to bid farewell to their 40-year-old captain. Lazio threatened to spoil the party when Giuseppe Biava scored the opening goal inside two minutes to stun San Siro. However, Rodrigo Palacio scored twice, either side of Mauro Icardis strike, and Hernanes netted against his former club to secure victory. At the end of the match, footage was shown on the big screens of Zanettis greatest Inter moments, and the clearly emotional player was led out by his family, peers and club presidents, with all his teammates wearing shirts with his number four on it. To chants of “theres only one captain,” Zanetti took the microphone and thanked the fans and teammates. “I have always tried to honour and defend the Inter shirt in every country in the world,” he said. “I learnt to love it thanks to you, I will love you forever. A very lovely career is coming to an end for me. I dont know what I will do but now one thing is certain: I will defend Inter even off the pitch.” Players from across the globe also took to Twitter to pay tribute to Zanetti, including former teammate Mario Balotelli, who wrote, “Javier Zanetti is an example of humanity and professionalism for all of us!” Inter has five points more than Torino and six more than Parma and AC Milan, who all have two matches remaining. It is the same number of points above Hellas Verona, which squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at home to Udinese following a superb goal from Antonio Di Natale. Verona and Inter have only one match remaining. Inter coach Walter Mazzarri was resoundly booed before kickoff when it was revealed Zanetti was starting on the bench. The 20-year-old Mateo Kovacic – who was less than four months old when Zanetti made his Inter debut – set up two of the goals with delightful throughballs. The Inter players hugged Zanetti after every goal, and the Argentine was eventually sent on seven minutes into the second half to a raucous standing ovation. Zanetti was wearing a special captains armband for the occasion. It had the words “Zanetti 4 Ever” in large letters over a background with the name of all his Inter teammates past and present. In Verona, substitute Badu came off the bench with minutes left and drilled in a stoppage-time equalizer for Udinese with a low shot into the corner. Luca Toni put Verona in front from the penalty spot in the 14th minute after Alessandro Agostini was tripped by Allan. It was the veteran strikers 20th league goal of the season. Emil Hallfredsson doubled Veronas lead in the 54th before Di Natale pulled one back two minutes later in stunning fashion. The Udinese forward controlled the ball with his back to goal and swiveled to fire a volley under the bar with his second touch for his 190th Serie A goal. McCoy ran for a franchise-best 217 yards, including touchdowns of 57 and 40 yards, and the Philadelphia Eagles overcame two TD returns by Jeremy Ross to beat the Detroit Lions 34-20 in a blizzard Sunday. “It was tough, to be honest,” McCoy said. “But the guys were giving me so much room. I actually like to run in between the tackles.” Ross returned a punt 58 yards for a score and ran a kickoff 98 yards. But McCoy ran 57 yards up the middle for a tying TD, and Nick Foles connected with Riley Cooper on the 2-point conversion. Foles sneaked in from the 1 and Chris Polk had a 38-yard touchdown run to cap a 28-point fourth quarter for the Eagles (8-5). Snow began falling two hours before kickoff and intensified after the game started. Workers used shovels and hand-held blowers to clear off yard lines. Conditions were so poor neither team tried a field goal, and there were 2-point conversion attempts after seven of the eight TDs. “We just felt footing was so bad,” Eagles coach Chip Kelly said. The Eagles, looking to go worst-to-first in the NFC East, won their fifth straight game and took over sole possession of first place. Dallas can make it a tie for the top spot with a victory at Chicago on Monday night. The Lions (7-6) have a half-game lead over the Bears in the NFC North. Forecasters predicted only some snow, so neither team was prepared for a storm that dropped up to six inches in Philadelphia. The Lions lost running back Reggie Bush when he fell on the slippery field during warmups and re-injured his calf. Matthew Stafford fumbled three snaps in the first quarter and had a costly turnover in the fourth. Joique Bell lost two fumbles inside the red zone in the first half. “Its not the same as a sunny day, thats for sure. But youve got to make adjustments,” Stafford said. McCoy ran for 148 yards in the fourth quarter, and broke Hall of Famer Steve Van Burens mark of 205 yards rushing against Pittsburgh on Nov. 27, 1949. “He was dominant,” McCoy said. “It means a lot.” The Eaggles finished with 299 yards rushing against a defence that didnt allow a TD on the ground in the previous eight games and came in allowing the third-fewest yards rushing per game (82.dddddddddddd7). “The first half we stopped the inside run and forced them to go sideways. In the second half, we allowed them to run inside and that was the difference,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. “Just about all those runs started off inside, even though some of them broke off outside.” Foles threw his first interception, leaving him one shy of matching Peyton Mannings record for most touchdowns without a pick to start the season. Foles had 19 touchdowns before Chris Houston grabbed his overthrown pass at midfield and returned it 20 yards to the Eagles 30. That ended Foles franchise-best streak of 237 passes without a pick. He finished 11 of 22 for 179 yards and a TD. “You were seeing a lot of white, a lot of snow falling down,” Foles said. “We got more comfortable as the game went on.” Bell ran in from the 2 and caught Staffords pass on the 2 -point conversion for an 8-0 halftime lead. After the Eagles rallied from a 14-0 deficit to tie it, Ross took the ensuing kickoff the distance. Ross ran into a crowd, came out of the pile and sprinted down the right sideline to the end zone. Foles connected for 44 yards to Cooper, who made a twisting over-the-shoulder catch, one play before hitting DeSean Jackson in the back of the end zone for a 19-yard TD that cut it to 14-6. Detroit star Calvin Johnson passed Herman Moore for most yards receiving in franchise history on a 33-yard catch to the Eagles 13 late in the first quarter. Johnson came up with a face full of snow on the play. But Bell fumbled a few plays later at the Eagles 10 and Patrick Chung recovered. Foles connected with Brent Celek for what wouldve been a 37-yard TD pass in the final minutes, but Celek slid at the 10-yard line so the Eagles could run out the clock. NOTES: Johnson had three catches for 49 yards. … Stafford was 10 of 25 for 148 yards. … The Lions fumbled seven times, losing three. The Eagles fumbled only once and recovered it. … Neither QB was sacked. Suh says he could have played elsewhere when he entered the league. The Lions took him with the second overall pick in the 2010 draft. “Probably a lot of you guys dont know, I could have gone elsewhere when I was drafted. I had that decision in my hands,” Suh said. “I chose not to take it, because thats just the way I saw it.” Suh was responding to a question about whether he wants to stay with Detroit long term — his point was that his decision to play for the Lions in the first place was evidence of his commitment. But he did not elaborate much when asked how, exactly, he might have ended up elsewhere four years ago. “Theres many ways to do things,” Suh said. “You can drop down in the draft, you can move up in the draft. People can come get you. Theres a lot of things that happen that you guys dont know. … It is for sure my choice, but like I said, thats water under the bridge, Im here in Detroit. Im happy to be here in Detroit, and Im going to continue to play my heart out, as Ive always done.” Suh is entering the last season of his contract, so his future with the Lions is unclear. He skipped the teams voluntary minicamp last month, but hes stayed away from voluntary workouts before in his career. He is taking part in organized team activities now, and was at practice Wednesday. The two-time All-Pro has always gotten himself physically ready to play. “This is the same time I came last year,” Suh said. “Ive been in a great program, one thats dialed in exactly to me and whats best for my body, to have longevity, which has been proven. I havent missed many gamees, if any at all.dddddddddddd So thats what I do. I stayed close to that program.” Suh said his absence had nothing to do with contract talks. “If it was about my contract, I wouldnt be here now,” he said. Suh says hes not putting a timetable on his contract negotiations. Suh said he was probably one of the first players on the team to meet with members of Detroits new coaching staff. The Lions fired Jim Schwartz and replaced him with Jim Caldwell after last season. And Suh isnt buying the idea that his absence during the off-season affects his ability to be a leader. Suh became a captain last season. “Last year I came in at the same exact time,” Suh said. “I showed that I was worthy of wearing a C at that point in time.” As for Caldwell, he seemed happy to move on from the constant questions about whether Suh would be participating in the teams off-season work. “He looks good, obviously. Hes in very fine shape, as always,” Caldwell said. “Hes one of those guys — he knows how to take care of his body. Hes certainly done a great job with that, and hes fit and excited about being here.” Indeed, Suh looked ready to practice Wednesday, at one point knocking two blockers back almost into the quarterback during a drill. “Hes back and hes in full swing, and doing everything above and beyond,” centre Dominic Raiola said. “I dont know if you guys watched practice close, but you can see him doing extra steps, taking extra conditioning measures, finishing down the field 40 yards. We see all that. If I see all that, I know everybody else sees all that.” NOTES: Caldwell said WR Golden Tate was absent because he was with the Seattle Seahawks for their presidential visit. Tate played for the Super Bowl-winning Seahawks last season. PARIS – Montreals Eugenie Bouchard recovered from early breaks in both sets to reach the second week of the French Open as she beat Swede Johanna Larsson 7-5, 6-4 Friday. The 18th-seeded Bouchard, an Australian Open semifinalist earlier this year, showed fighting spirit in winning her 84-minute match with the 99th-ranked Larsson in the pairs first meeting. Bouchard finished with 27 winners and 30 unforced errors, breaking on six of 11 chances while losing serve four times. Bouchard lost the opening game but recovered nicely to take a 5-3 first-set lead. She got into trouble as Lasson levelled for 5-all but claimed the set with a break for 7-5 on her third set point. The Canadian lost serve in the third game of the second, breaking back in the fourth to tie the set at 2. Bouchard earned a 4-2 lead as she move on to victory, with Larsson donating a double-fault for a second match point before volleying a forehand return low into the net. Next up for Bouchard is German eighth seed Angelique Kerber, who defeated Slovak Daniela Hantuchova on Friday. BOSTON — World Series MVP David Ortiz and Boston Red Sox teammate Shane Victorino had their beards shaved for charity Monday to benefit victims of the Boston Marathon bombings in April. The “shave offs” occurred at Gillettes world headquarters. The Boston company donated $100,000 to the One Fund, which is assisting victims and their families of the bombings on April 15. Three people were killed and over 260 injured near the finish line that day. Ortiz, fresh off his third World Series title with the Red Sox, joked that its a perfect look for his off-season. “Im going down south — some place warm,” he said. “I feel fresh. Ive got to keep it real. Its not that cold down there.” Sitting in one of two barbers chairs to Ortizs right, Victorino appeared a bit shocked when he looked into a hand-held mirror and realized his beard and goatee were completely gone. “Im a World Series champion and I look like Im 12-years old,” he said. Ortiz had his most of his beard shaved off, leaving only a goatee. “Hes a three-time champ and Im a two-time champ, and hes a little more tenured in the city than I am,” Victorino said. “Its different look for me and something Im definitely not accustomed to.” But he did find another reason to enjoy his fresh look. “My kids will be excited,” he said. “I dont know if theyre going to recognize me when I walk in the door. My daughter was tugging on it last night and said, When are you going to shave it? I didnt want to let the secret out. She was still sleeping when I left this morning.” Ortiz couldnt resist teasing his now fresh-faced teammate. “He looks like hes in fifth grade. You going back to school?” Big Papi said. “Mine will grow very fast. I dont think Ill have any problems letting it grow. I dont know about this guy.” Victorino said hes hoping to grow a beard back by spring training. “It was a battle. We fought to get that beard,” Victorino said. Outfielder Jonny Gomes and first baseman Mike Napoli encouraged teammates during spring training to grow beards in spring training, even teasing players who talked about shaving. “Mike Nap said, You touch that one more time and were going to have to need a new DH,” Ortiz recalled. Napoli and Gomes had the biggest, bushiest beards on the club. “It was a goal to come in and play hard and finish the season like we did for all the people that were struggling from the marathon, all the family members, the whole New England area that struggled with this and the whole country that struggled with this,” Ortiz said. Victorino and Ortiz were joined by Fenway Park bullpen and Boston police officer Steve Horgan and fan, Michael Grant, from Leicester, Mass. Grant was selected from Gillettes Facebook and Twitter accounts. Horgan, stationed in the Red Sox bullpen, became an instant celebrity after he was photographed with his arms in the air celebrating Ortizs grand slam in Game 2 of the AL championship series as Detroit right fielder Torii Hunter flipped over the short fence with his legs straight upward. “I started it a week before the playoffs,” Horgan said of his full beard. Tropical rains delayed the start of qualifying for 50 minutes, but even the wet track at the Sepang International Circuit could not prevent Mercedes continuing the dominance it had shown all weekend as Hamilton made it back-to-back poles to start the new season. Red Bulls Sebastian Vettel came close, but finished five hundredths of a second behind Hamilton and just in front of Mercedes Nico Rosberg, who qualified third. Hamiltons pole was the 33rd of his career, bringing him level with former world champion Jim Clark for the most by any British driver. It also puts him in an ideal position to make up for his early retirement from the season opener in Australia due to an engine misfire. “It was very, very tricky out there, particularly at the end — it was almost impossible to see on the last lap,” Hamilton said. Ferraris Fernando Alonso recovered from a crrash that broke his front suspension in the second session of qualifying and will start from fourth on the grid.dddddddddddd His teammate Kimi Raikkonen qualified sixth, behind Red Bulls Daniel Ricciardo. Force Indias Nico Hulkenberg, McLaren rookie Kevin Magnussen, Toro Rossos Jean-Eric Vergne and McLarens Jenson Button rounded out the top 10. There was standing water on the track from a pre-qualifying downpour, and lighter rain continued throughout the sessions to make things difficult for all drivers, who switched back and forth between the intermediate and full-wet tires as they tried to find the right setup for the conditions. The first session of qualifying was held up after Caterhams Marcus Ericsson went off the track, into a wall, through a brake marker and back onto the track where he was almost hit by Saubers Esteban Gutierrez. There was also a red flag in the second qualifying session, when Toro Rosso rookie Daniil Kvyat tried to pass Alonso on the inside of a corner but collided with the Ferrari, leaving debris on the track.
