DALLAS — Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks got the early scare. Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans ended up with the bigger problem. Nowitzki shook off a shoulder issue in the first minute to finish with 18 points, but Davis was knocked out of the game with a similar problem and the Mavericks beat the Pelicans 108-89 Wednesday night. “Im thinking Dirks going to be out when he goes out with a shoulder injury and then a few plays later AD gets hit and hes out,” said New Orleans coach Monty Williams, who could now be without three of his top four scorers. “Dirk comes back. So, it just hasnt gone our way.” Nowitzki left the court 31 seconds into the game but emerged a short time later and returned to the game. He even had a spin move and finished with a left-handed finger roll in the first half. “Ive had it ever since Karl Malone hacked me in 99,” said Nowitzki, who was favouring the shoulder after throwing an alley-oop pass to Sam Dalembert for a layup on the first possession. “The shoulder just sometimes comes in and out a little bit. Its happened a good 20 times already over my career.” Davis, the leading scorer and rebounder for the Pelicans, was holding his sprained left shoulder on his way to play defence and didnt return after leaving the game during a New Orleans timeout with 4:13 left in the first half. After the game, Williams didnt have an update on the condition of his All-Star big man, who was on the bench during the second half with his left arm in a sling. “When you play as hard as AD and these guys who go after it every single night, theyre going to have bumps and bruises,” Williams said. “It could be nothing. It could be a day-to-day thing. Weve got to let the doctors do their deal.” The Mavericks (36-23) are a season-high 13 games over .500 after their fourth straight win, and the Pelicans stayed winless since the All-Star break at 0-5. Eric Gordon led New Orleans with 19 points, and Brian Roberts had 17. Monta Ellis led Dallas with 23 points, seven assists and four steals, while Vince Carter scored 17. “Monta has been doing a great job I think picking his spots, attacking when its there,” Nowitzki said. “Hes been great for us all season making plays off the dribble and getting in the lane.” The injury to Davis is the latest in a litany of them for the Pelicans. Second-leading scorer Ryan Anderson is likely out for the season with a herniated disk. Jrue Holiday, another double-digit scorer and New Orleans assists leader, is sidelined after breaking his right shin in early January. Davis, who averages 20 points and 10 rebounds per game and leads the NBA in blocked shots, was sharp early to help the Pelicans build an eight-point lead. He had six points to go with a game-high nine rebounds and two blocks in just 12 minutes. “Its difficult, but guys have been in and out all year,” Gordon said. “Weve just got to keep on adjusting.” Even when they had Davis on the floor, the Pelicans couldnt protect the ball while getting swept in the four-game season series with Dallas. They had a season-high 19 turnovers after committing at least 16 in each of the previous three meetings. One of New Orleans turnovers ended with a pass to Nowitzki standing alone under the basket for a dunk and an 84-69 lead early in the fourth quarter. Nowitzki was 7 of 13 from the field two nights after he hit his first game-winning shot at the buzzer since 2009 to beat the Knicks in New York and finish a 3-0 trip through the Eastern Conference. The big German led the Mavericks with eight points in the third quarter, when they took their first double-digit lead. Dallas put away its 10th win in 12 games with a 15-2 run to start the fourth. “Weve done better over the last couple of weeks,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. “But weve got a long way to go.” NOTES: New Orleans C Alexis Ajinca had 14 points and eight rebounds in his first game after setting career highs with 19 points and 12 rebounds in loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. … Ellis led the Mavericks with eight points in the second quarter, when they turned an eight-point deficit into an eight-point lead before settling for a six-point edge at halftime. It was a rare blowout for the Orioles, who scored three runs or fewer in 11 of their 20 previous games and have played 63 games decided by one or two runs.DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Novak Djokovic opened the defence of his Dubai Championships title with a straight sets victory over Denis Istomin, while second-seeded Juan Martin del Potro had to retire from his first-round match on Tuesday. Top-seeded Djokovic, who is making only his second appearance this year after reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over 54th-ranked Istomin of Uzbekistan. “It wasnt as easy as the scoreline indicates,” said Djokovic, who has won in Dubai on four occasions. "I needed to work for my games. “Having not played for more than four, five weeks, an official match, obviously it takes its toll on the court.” Djokovic saved all four break points he faced on serve and broke Istomin three times — in the third and ninth games of the first set and in the second game of the second set. Del Potro was not so fortunate, being forced to retire against Somdev Devvarman of India after losing the first-set tiebreaker 7-6 (3). Since winning the Sydney title last month, Del Potro has been struggling with a left wrist injury that has conjured up memories of similar pain he experienced in his right wrist four years ago. In 2010, the year after he won the U.S. Open, he played only three tournaments before and after surgery on his right wrist. Del Potro was fighting back tears in Dubai when he came to talk to the media after his retirement. &“I dont feel really well,” he said.dddddddddddd. "My wrist is hurting a lot and everybody knows what happened to me four years ago with my other wrist. “It was really tough to play today. I tried everything. I cannot be the player I would like to be.” Having felt the pain in his left wrist during the Australian Open, Del Potro went at the end of January to consult with Dr. Richard Berger, who performed his right wrist surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. The doctor recommended a course of physical therapy. Asked if he would have kept playing if he won the first set, Del Potro said: “I dont think so, no. It was hurting too much.” Devvarman, a wild card who won a challenger in New Delhi last week, hit a service winner on his third set point in the tiebreaker. That proved to be the final point of the match. “Its unfortunate, especially for a guy like him,” Devvarman said. “I realized he wasnt comfortable hitting backhands and I tried to make him hit as many as I could, and he wasnt really hitting over it so I knew he wasnt happy.” Third-seeded Tomas Berdych extended his winning streak to eight matches with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Romanian qualifier Marius Copil. Berdych, who reached the final in Dubai last year, won the Rotterdam title two weeks ago. Fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France secured a 6-2, 6-4 win over Victor Hanescu of Romania. TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays want to put a couple of series losses behind them as they head out for a 10-game road trip that should give them a good idea of whether theyre actually ready to be a contender in the American League East. Toronto dropped a 7-2 decision to the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon, with only a pair of late runs preventing a second straight shutout loss. Josh Willingham belted a two-run homer in the first inning and Kendrys Morales hit a bases-clearing double in the seventh as the Twins took the rubber game of the three-game series. Twins starter Phil Hughes (7-2) struck out nine and allowed seven hits over seven shutout innings. With the loss, Torontos lead atop the division standings fell to five games over Baltimore and New York. The Orioles were home to Boston on Wednesday night while the Yankees were in Seattle. The Blue Jays will play Baltimore and New York next week before closing out their trip against the Cincinnati Reds. “Well see how good we are,” said Toronto manager John Gibbons. "Were playing a couple good teams in our division. Weve got a small little lead on them but theyre right there. So we need to play good baseball on this road trip, especially the way the last four or five games have gone. “For our psyche more than anything else we need to regroup and put a couple good ball games together.” Toronto (39-28) has been giving up early leads of late, with the opposition scoring first for the seventh straight time Wednesday. Danny Santana opened the game with a single off Marcus Stroman (3-1), who was making his third career start. The leadoff man scored when Willingham turned on a 1-2 pitch and put it into the second deck. “It was just a bad pitch,” Stroman said. “It was probably the worst pitch of the outing. It was just one of those that was supposed to be buried but it just kind of hung up there. I tried to do too much with it.” The Blue Jays starter allowed three earned runs and nine hits while striking out four. Triple-A callup Bobby Korecky replaced him in the seventh and loaded the bases before Morales cleared them with a three-run double. Toronto avoided the embarrassment of a fourth shutout loss in five games by scratching out a pair of runs in the eighth. Casey Fien got the last four outs for his first save of the season. “Theres no doubt weve cooled off with the bats,” Gibbons said. "But that can turn in one day, that can turn overnight. But I do think its going to be good to get out on the road. “Weve been at home a long time. A little change of pace, a little change of scenery might do us some good.” The Blue Jays led several offensive categories last month and, despite the recent cold stretch, have won 16 of their last 22 games and 21 of 29. “The bats are going to come around,” Stroman said. “All the guys in the clubhouse are pretty positive about it. I have 100 per cent confidence in every single guy in that lineup that the guys are going to start doing what they were doing at the beginning of the year. Its close.” The Twins, meanwhile, moved two games under the .500 mark with the win. Minnesota (31-33) outhit Toronto 16-10 while Hughes picked up his ninth quality start of the season. “Super job by him of changing speeds, moving the ball in and out,” said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. “He used his breaking ball a lot better today.” Hughes did well to get out of a jam in the sixth inning after Toronto shortstop Jose Reyes extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an infield single. Reyes moved to third base on a Melky Cabrera single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Oswaldo Arcia made a nice sliding catch in foul territory on a Jose Bautista flyout and Hughes struck out Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind to escape. “I felt like I kind of found myself in the third or fourth inning and was able to ride that through,” Hughes said. The Blue Jays fell to 20-17 at home this season. They have been much stronger away from Rogers Centre this year and at 19-11, have the fewest road losses in the major leagues. “The bats will heat up again,” Gibbons said. “Hopefully sooner than later.” Notes: Announced attendance was 45,080. There were several groups of schoolchildren in the crowd. … Koreckys callup from the Buffalo Bisons was announced Wednesday morning and he was sent back down after the game. The Blue Jays also optioned outfielder Kevin Pillar to the Bisons and recalled outfielder Darin Mastroianni. … Dozier left the game in the fourth inning due to tightness in his lower back. He was replaced at second base by Eduardo Escobar and is listed as day to day. … Toronto will kick off a four-game series at Baltimore on Thursday night. Left-hander Mark Buehrle (10-2, 2.04 ERA) is scheduled to start against right-hander Kevin Gausman (1-1, 4.91). … The Blue Jays will get an off-day Monday before playing three games against the Yankees and three against the Reds. … Reyes turned 31 on Wednesday. … The game took two hours 57 minutes to play. cheap jerseys . — Henrik Zetterberg didnt wait long to make an impact in his first game back from injury. Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema scored two goals each Wednesday night in a 6-1 rout of Schalke in the first leg of their second-round matchup. “We played a very, very good match,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. “We got well into the match, scored two early goals and that opened the game and left us able to counter and to use the speed of our players. ”http://www.wholesalejerseysfamily.com/">http://www.wholesalejerseysfamily.com/. WASHINGTON — Tanner Roark won his fourth straight start, Denard Span had an RBI double and the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1 Sunday for a split of the four-game series between NL East rivals. Span, Danny Espinosa and Adam LaRoche had two hits apiece as Washington won the final two games of the series. The Nationals improved to 3-7 against Atlanta. They increased their division lead over the Braves to 1 1/2 games. Roark (7-4) went 5 1-3 innings, allowing a run and four hits. Craig Stammen came on to end a sixth-inning Braves rally, and Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his 17th save. Washington relievers retired all 11 batters they faced. Freddie Freeman had two hits for Atlanta. Evan Gattis went 0 for 3 to snap his 20-game hitting streak. Ervin Santana (5-5) went six innings, giving up three runs and six hits. He walked one and struck out nine. Atlantas Chris Johnson was ejected for arguing a checked-swing call in the sixth. Teammate Justin Upton was ejected for arguing after a swinging strikeout in the ninth. With Washington leading 3-0, the first two Braves reached against Roark in the sixth. Manager Matt Williams visited the mound but left Roark in to face Jason Heyward. Roark got Heyward on a fly to right, but Justin Upton singled home Freddie Freeman to make 3-1. Stammen came on to pitch to Johnson, who attempted to check his swing on a 1-2 pitch. Nationals catcher Sandy Leon appealed the ball call, and first base umpire Tim Welke ruled Johnson hhad gone around for strike three.dddddddddddd Johnson immediately began yelling and gesturing at Welke and was ejected by home plate umpire Mark Carlson. Stammen retired Andrelton Simmons to end the inning. Anthony Rendon made it 4-1 when he doubled in the eighth, went to third on a ground out and scored on Luis Avilans wild pitch. Washington got to Santana in the first, getting and RBI single from LaRoche that deflected off diving shortstop Simmons glove. Ryan Zimmerman had a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Atlanta threatened in the third. With one out, LaRoche misplayed Freemans grounder down the first base line for a two-base error. But Roark got Gattis on a grounder to third, and, after Heyward walked, Justin Upton hit into a fielders choice. The Nationals made it 3-0 the fifth. Sandy Leon opened with a single and Roark sacrificed him to second. Span then lined a double to left, scoring Leon. Span is 6 for his last 11 against Santana. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies wanted to make sure they maintained the momentum they had before the All-Star break. They did it by turning back the defending champion Mavericks on Wednesday night - albeit with Dallas getting little production from Dirk Nowitzki, who left with a balky back. Marc Gasol had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Mike Conley added 20 points and 10 assists as the Grizzlies won 96-85 in their first game after the All-Star break. “We all told each before the break that when we came back, it was a sprint to the finish line,” Conley said. “Each game is going to be big, especially starting off against the defending champions. I thought we showed we were hungry and wanted to get off to a good start.” Rudy Gay added 18 points for Memphis, despite hitting just eight of his 19 shots. Dante Cunningham was 5 of 6 from the field and scored 10 points as the Grizzlies won their fifth straight home game and their eighth in the last 10 overall. Jason Terry led the Mavericks with 18 points, while Rodrigue Beaubois scored 16. Brendan Haywood had 10 points for Dallas, which lost its third straight. The Mavericks played most of the game without Nowitzki, who averages 19.7 points a game. Nowitzki scored only one point before leaving early in the second quarter with lower back tightness. He did not return. “He felt something in warmups and tried to play,” Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. “He clearly wasnt moving the way he needed to be moving, so we pulled the plug.” The Mavericks also were without Lamar Odom, who missed his third game for personal reasons, and Delonte West, who is out with a fractured right ring finger. “I thought we had some good stretches,” Carlisle said. “Our second quarter was great. The start of the third was OK. Then, in the third, we had some opportunities to score, but couldnt cash in. Then they made a run.” Memphis led by as many as 15 in the second half and maintained a nine to 11-point lead most of the way down the stretch. Beaubois gave the Mavericks good minutes off the bench in the first half scoring 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. He was part of the Mavericks hitting 13 of their 20 shots in the second quarter, taking a 49-47 lead into halftime. Memphis built the lead to as many as 10 early in the second period, but Dallas outscored the Grizzlies 32-22 in the quarter. “It was slippage,” Memphis guard Tony Allen said of the second quarter. “Coach (Lionel Hollins) came to the sideline, threw that clipboard down, and I think guys looked at that as a time to respond.” Both teams shot well in the half, Dallas connecting on 54 per cent of its shots, the Grizzlies hitting at a 50 per cent clip. But the Mavericks were hampered by 10 turnovers. Gasol led Memphis with 12 points in the half. The Mavericks extended the lead with four points from Haywood to open the second half, but Conley sparked Memphis to retake the lead. The Grizzlies relied on their defence to compose an 18-2 run in the period. “When youve got five guys out there focused on the defensive end, great things happen,” Allen said. “We got deflections, steals, we kind of won the 50-50 balls.” The defensive stance and the rally werent enough to hold Dallas completely at bay, however, as the Mavericks picked their way back. Still, Memphis led 74-67 entering the final quarter. “The third quarter definitely put them in a great position to win the game,” Haywood said. “They had a good run. In the second half of the third quarter, we were really on a tough drought where we couldnt really get good shots or just get a good offensive feel.” Memphis opened the fourth with four straight baskets, including a pair by Gasol, to reach its biggest lead at 82-67. “I think our tempo was better in the second half,” Conley said. "Defensively, we did a great job on them, running them off the 3-point line, getting out in transition, playing our style of defence. Getting steals and getting out and getting easy buckets. “When we play in a comfortable zone like that, were hard to beat.” Notes: The Mavericks were playing the second game in a run of nine in 12 nights. … Grizzlies G Josh Selby, recalled from Reno, after the All-Star break, was used as a backup to Conley at point guard, displacing Jeremy Pargo. … The Mavericks 17 points in the first quarter matched Dallas season low for the opening period. … Memphis F Quincy Pondexter had a career-high eight rebounds. Ill enjoy your winters for two more years!!” Messaged left by The Associated Press for Neals agent were not immediately answered. Neal on Twitter later received congratulations from Johnny Jolly, himself an unrestricted free agent who played last year in Green Bay. In his fourth year out of Purdue, Neal last season played more linebacker and rushed from the outside in the Packers 3-4 scheme. It turned out to be an important move with Clay Matthews and Nick Perry missing time due to injuries. Neal had five sacks in 16 games and 10 starts last season, all career highs.dddddddddddd Green Bay on Wednesday did lose safety M.D. Jennings, who signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears. Jennings had one interception in 26 starts over the last two seasons. Coach Mike McCarthy has said he would like more impact players across the defence, and the team could turn to the draft to address the safety spot opposite Morgan Burnett. As for Jolly, a message on his Twitter account Tuesday said that he had “great news” from his doctor about the neck injury that knocked him out late last season. The neck fusion had “healed perfectly” and he had a “green light” to start some strength work, Jolly said. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

Here are five thoughts on the Eastern Conference first-round series between the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets following Game 5, including the play of Kyle Lowry, Joe Johnson, Kevin Garnet and Paul Pierce, as well as head coaches Jason Kidd and Dwane Casey. 1. KYLE LOWRY: Brilliant in Game 5. Watching him Wednesday night brought me back to watching Allen Iverson torch the Raptors in the 2001 playoffs. Considering Lowry is a Philly guy and one of the guys he looked up to as a young player was Iverson, I couldnt help myself but to draw comparisons. A totally different players but one quality that truly makes them alike is that they are both incredible competitors. Not the size of the dog in the fight but the fight in the dog. In the last five quarters of play (Game 4, 4th quarter and Game 5), other than the magic of Vince Carter, I cant recall a better stretch of play ever from a Raptor on so many fronts. Enjoy it – Im mesmerized by it. 2. JOE JOHNSON: Give him credit. Major bounce-back in the second half of Game 5. He was close to unstoppable. Raptors did everything they could to contain/control him and he was that much better. Im sure a significant focus of game planning for Game 6 will centre on tightening the screws on both the individual coverages associated with him and the collective scheme based upon the help you have to give his defender. He is an absolute load. Im so impressed by his talent. 3. RAPTORS FIRST THREE QUARTERS VS. 4TH QUARTER: It looked like five guys stole Raptors shirts early in the 4th and tried to imitate the real guys. In the first three quarters we saw the Raptors at their truly best – ball movement, defensive energy, effort, discipline and most importantly, a collective will and confidence that the crowd fed off of. In the fourth, we saw a team that cruised and thought it would be easy and let up with its focus. Very fortunate that they hung on, yet when I reflect on it for the majority of the game they were far better, which is good. Now its about learning from that lesson and growing. Remember back in early December at Golden State? It was the Raptors biggest collapse in franchise history and lost to the Warriors. This time, a huge collapse as well – the difference – they won and won on a much more meaningful stage than the stage back in Oakland. Speaking of Oakland, the late Al Davis (Oakland Raiders) would say just win, baby! They did. One to go but it wont be easy. Their competition has lots to play for; it should be a major challenge and lots of fun to watch. 4. KG AND PAUL PIERCE: They were spectators Wednesday night in the 4th quarter and Im sure both men will be ready to go Friday night in response to that. I dont think there have been many times in either guys career that they sat and watched at crunch time. Im sure well see two angry/ornery guys in Brooklyn talking smack and challenging their teammates and the crowd to be at optimal level. Lots of folks piling on KG these days. I respect what hes done in his career. Is he the player he once was? No, but his effort and will to win are still there all the time. Pierce – Hes still got a lot left and his matchup at the four spot is still a tough cover for the Raptors, yet I do like that the Raps are now making him guard his guy and attacking him. Fully expect both guys to come out firing guns blazing. Be prepared. 5. JASON KIDD AND DWANE CASEY: Both coaches, Im sure, are working on their teams collective psyche as we enter Game 6. Kidd challenged his team before Game 5 to be much better in the 4th quarter after being outplayed by the Raps in Games 3 and 4 in the defining stanza. They were awesome in the 4th Wednesday night… the other three quarters, not so impressive. Im sure hes pushing momentum and carryover. Coach Casey will hammer the fact that you must sustain and play every possession at the max and learn/build on the fact that you won, yet have to respect the little details of the game. You also sell that momentum in a series that lasts only as long as you allow it to or make it happen. As much as the Nets want to sell that theyre now going to pick up where they left off, youve got to sell that the score always takes care of itself if you do the right things. You concentrate on doing the right things" each possession and youll find a way in Game 6, or if necessary, Game 7. Wont be easy to put Brooklyn away Friday but it can be done. Dictate the tone and personality of Game 6 right at the start. Winning/losing – thats too much sometimes to focus on. Dive into the details of what it takes to succeed and youll handle the pressure of a road game better. . Another is a bunch of groundballs. Finally, theres a game that lasts two hours six minutes. Pavano kept up his recent surge with an efficient six-hitter for the Twins in a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. . Anthony Calvillo, through 20 CFL seasons, was frequently invincible and largely stoic in the heat of competition. With just over a minute remaining, ODriscolls and Irish hearts sank when France No. 8 Damien Chouly scored in the right corner, but the try was disallowed for a forward pass from captain Pascal Pape. “Im over the moon, very happy for the lads and obviously very happy for Brian in his last international,” Ireland captain Paul OConnell said. “Historically, this is always our toughest Six Nations with England away from home and France away from home, so to win the championship with these two fixtures is a great success.” Ireland flyhalf Jonathan Sexton scored two tries among a personal 17 points to steal the limelight in ODriscolls world-record 141st and final test. Right winger Andrew Trimble got Irelands other try. “There is where it all began and to finish with a medal around my neck 15 years later is incredible,” said ODriscoll, who was still in his jersey at the news conference. “Its been a fantastic Six Nations for us. Ive enjoyed every second. I dont really want to take this jersey off yet.” Irelands last win in Paris was in 2000, when ODriscoll, nine months into his great career, scored a hat trick of tries and made his name. “I dont think anybody will step into Brians shoes,” Ireland coach Joe Schmidt said. “Theyre rather big, but hopefully they can grow into them.” Irelands title was only its second in 29 years, and relegated England to second for a third straight year. England beat Italy 52-11 in Rome earlier, forcing Ireland and France, a long shot for the title, to win or miss out. France finished fourth, Wales rising to third with a 51-3 defeat of Scotland. France, after an indifferent campaign, came to the party with all guns loaded and produced the games highlight moment, its first try to fullback Brice Dulin. There was a controversial second try from hooker Dimitri Szarzewski, who knocked on before scoring against the post. “Of course its frustrating to finish fourth,” France coach Philippe Saint-Andre said. “You cant say our players cant play rugby and that they dont have any desire. We showed enormous ambition to play good rugby. The highesst level is very cruel and you have to congratulate Ireland and ODriscoll.dddddddddddd” France missed chances in the last 10 minutes to take the lead, when replacement scrumhalf Jean-Marc Doussains penalty drifted wide and the disallowed try. “I would have liked to have closed it out a lot better than we did,” OConnell said. “Ive been coming to Paris since I was 22, its a very tough place to win. Ive never won here before. In my year as captain, at 34 and in Brians last cap, it really is an incredible feeling.” ODriscoll kissed the Six Nations trophy before OConnell raised it aloft, sending Irelands large contingent of fans into delirium again. “I tried to channel the emotions into the performance. You cant allow the occasion to get the better of you,” ODriscoll said. “You have to try and make sure youre a cog in the wheel of the team. The emotions come after and they did, and Im sure therell be a few tears later on with multiple beers on board. But its a wonderful way to finish.” Early momentum, especially from centre Mathieu Bastareaud, was with France for a 6-0 lead. Sextons first try cut the lead to one, and soon after, scrumhalf Conor Murrays clever footwork and pass released Trimble for a try and 12-6. Stung back into action, the French pack took control. With blood pouring from a cut under his right eye, Szarzewski gained ground and flyhalf Remi Tales lofted a pin-point cross-kick to the right corner, where winger Yoann Huget brilliantly palmed it down to Dulin, who scored. It was Frances best move of the tournament. Sexton missed a penalty, the last act of the half, to allow France to go into the interval 13-12 ahead but without prop Nicolas Mas, who trudged off with his right arm in a sling. In the second half, Trimbles superb run down the right almost earned the supporting ODriscoll a try. Ireland recycled, and Murray sent Sexton over for the seven-pointer. Another penalty from Sexton made it 22-13. But France wasnt finished. Just after the hour mark, Szarzewskis try that really wasnt cut the margin to two. The Irish resisted the final French onslaught to send ODriscoll into a happy international retirement “Not many people get to finish their career on their own terms and with high emotions,” ODriscoll said. “I feel very fortunate.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Tiger Woods is making his first visit to India next week to play an exhibition with a top business executive. Woods said he will be the guest of Pawan Munjal, the CEO and managing director of Hero Motor Group, which makes motorcycles and scooters. They are to play an 18-hole match on Tuesday at Delhi Golf Club, which has hosted the Indian Open. Munjal first met Woods when visiting the Tavistock Cup in Orlando, Florida. Woods also is close to India native Arjun Atwal, a U.S. PGA Tour winner. Woods has been conducting corporate outings in Asia and Australia for the last couple of years. The Hindustan Times said the event would not be open to the public. Woods shot 73 in the Dubai Desert Classic and was tied for 44th in the second round on Friday. Trim returned an interception 82 yards for a touchdown, Hunter Stover hit a go-ahead 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, and Louisiana-Lafayette held off Tulane 24-21 on Saturday night for its third straight New Orleans Bowl victory.VANCOUVER — It wasnt long ago that the B.C. Lions ground attack was in tatters. Running back Andrew Harris registered an abysmal 10 yards on six carriers in a 31-17 home loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders back on Oct. 4 and followed that up a week later by rushing nine times for 31 yards in a 40-26 road defeat at the hands of the Calgary Stampeders. What a difference a month makes. General manager Wally Buono brought in former Lions running back/kick returner Stefan Logan to give his teams ground game a shot in the arm after the Calgary loss. Following some initial hiccups, B.C. hasnt looked back. Coming off two straight wins, that re-energized running game featuring both Harris and Logan could play a big part in Sundays CFL West Division semifinal when the Lions visit chilly Regina to take on the Roughriders. “The 1-2 punch between me and Stefan has been great,” said Harris. “We definitely feed off each other and when you have that competition with someone else taking reps and getting in there and you see them doing well, it definitely gets you going to make some plays.” Harris, who finished third in the CFL this season with 998 yards on the ground, rushed for 102 yards against Calgary in last weeks regular-season finale. It marked his first 100-yard rushing game since late July and came on the heels of Logans 121-yard effort against the Edmonton Eskimos on Oct. 25. “The biggest thing is were two different styles of running backs. It definitely frees up some space for him and it definitely frees up space for me,” said Harris, who rushed for 76 yards in the Edmonton game. “When you have two different styles of runners … its going to be tough for teams to game plan against that.” The five-foot-11, 213-pound Harris is a more straight ahead back, while the five-foot-six, 180-pound Logan is more shifty. Logan, who played with the Lions in 2008 before spending four seasons in the NFL, said the fact that B.C. has rushed for over 200 yards in each of the last two weeks has lifted a burden off both the backs and an offensive line that was taking a lot of heat for the lack of production.dddddddddddd “Being a part of it right now, were having a great time,” said Logan. “Were in the meeting rooms and now its a little more chill and laid back and having fun instead of all uptight and worrying about how were going to look this game. Its going well and we want to keep it going.” Having two featured running backs can sometimes cause problems for teams with both players wanting more touches, but Logan said a key for the Lions has been maturity. “When youre in the game and your name is called and your number is called, you want to make plays and thats what its all about,” he said. "I want to make plays any way I can. “Its always a battle with each and every position, but you cant let that get to you and lose focus on whats going on right now. Right now were in the playoffs to play Saskatchewan and right now is not a time to be selfish.” Prior to his own resurgence, Harris was clearly frustrated but bit his tongue when repeatedly asked about the struggling ground game as B.C. went 11 straight contests without a 100-yard rusher. “Theres no doubt that certainly theres been adversities, ups and downs and those types of things, but thats the course of an 18-game season,” said Lions head coach Mike Benevides. “All the challenges that weve all faced are going to make us stronger and better for when it really counts.” The Lions and Roughriders finished the regular season with identical 11-7 records, but Saskatchewan won two of the three head-to-head matchups to earn the second seed in the West Division. Benevides has yet to decide on his starting quarterback for Sunday, but either Travis Lulay — who is returning from an injury to his throwing shoulder — or veteran backup Buck Pierce will benefit if the Harris-Logan combination continues to click with temperatures expected to dip to as low as 10 C in Regina. "Me and him - the two-headed monster," said Logan. “I like the name and I want to keep it going.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

LOS ANGELES — The ball was dropping everywhere for the Giants through the first two innings. After that, they couldnt get a hit. They made their early runs hold up, beating Los Angeles 8-4 Friday and spoiling the Dodgers home opener played nearly two weeks after they began the season in Australia. Michael Morse keyed a six-run first inning with a two-run single in the Giants highest-scoring opening inning since they scored six on June 2, 2008, against the Mets. “We had some breaks and we know it,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said, “so you take them.” David Huff (1-0) got the victory, allowing two hits in 1 2-3 innings of relief while striking out three. After retiring the first two batters, Hyun-Jin Ryu got pummeled for six runs while giving up six hits, including four in a row as the Giants batted around. They finished Ryu with two more runs in the second, extending their lead to 8-0. It was the South Koreans shortest outing as a Dodger. Ryu and four relievers combined to hold the Giants hitless over the final 7 1-3 innings. “I dont really feel like he got thumped,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “We didnt help him for sure. Things didnt go his way, but I like the way he handled himself. He could have gotten irritated.” Ryu (1-1) gave up a career-high eight runs — six earned — and eight hits while getting six outs. The left-hander walked three and struck out two while making his third start in six games. He was moved up in the rotation after injured ace Clayton Kershaw went on the disabled list for the first time in his career with a strained muscle in his back. Kershaw may be out a month. “You wish it was one of those games buried on a Tuesday night in August instead of opening day,” Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis said. “It was one of those games where he (Ryu) just couldnt catch a break.” Pablo Sandoval walked, Buster Posey singled and Morse singled them in for a 2-0 lead. Center fielder Matt Kemp bobbled Morses hit, allowing him to take second on the error, and Brandon Belt singled in another run. Activated from the disabled list before the game, Kemp wasnt originally in the lineup but was inserted after Yasiel Puig arrived late to the ballpark and was removed from the batting order. “The first two innings were sloppy defensively,” Kemp said. “We didnt do a good job of anything, but we kept fighting. We kept grinding. Youre going to have those games when you start out slow.” Puig said after the game through a translator that he had already apologized to his teammates and Mattingly. “Im sincerely sorry. It was my fault,” he said. “Ill be here early tomorrow.” Pitcher Ryan Vogelsongs bloop single scored Belt and Brandon Hicks after an intentional walk to Joaquin Arias, extending San Franciscos lead to 5-0. Angel Pagans RBI single tacked on another run. Hicks had an RBI double and Arias added an RBI single to make it 8-0 in the second. Bochy successfully challenged a call in the seventh after Hanley Ramirez singled leading off and was called safe in stealing second. Second base umpire Marty Fosters call was overturned under the new video review rule. “Thats a big call. Theres nobody out and they got the leadoff hitter on, but it worked out well,” Bochy said. “We also had one before today that didnt work out well, so hopefully at the end of the season, you have more that go your way. But I like it. I just take it for granted that you have to use your challenge if you have one.” The Dodgers got back-to-back homers by Adrian Gonzalez and Andre Ethier leading off the fourth to trail 8-2. Kemp doubled in a run in the fifth, his first hit in his season debut after rehabbing left ankle and shoulder injuries. “It felt good to come back. Its been a rough 1 1/2 years for me,” Kemp said. Vogelsong allowed seven hits and four runs in four-plus innings. He struck out four and walked two. “Ive been throwing the ball exactly the way I wanted to. I just got away from it a little bit,” he said. “Ill try to get my stuff cleaned up before the next outing.” Notes: The Dodgers streak of winning every home opener since 2008 ended at six. They are 28-25 in home openers. … The Dodgers allowed the most runs in a home opener since 2006, when they lost 11-10 to Atlanta. … The Dodgers entire team was introduced for the fifth time this season, including twice in Australia and twice in San Diego, where they opened the North American portion of the schedule. … Dodgers Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully rode in a baby blue 1965 Mustang convertible to home plate, where he handed rather than tossed the first pitch to Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax while other Dodger greats who had defining career moments announced by Scully ringed the plate. … Former Dodgers broadcaster Ross Porter, who spent 28 years with the team starting in 1977, served as honorary public address announcer. By evening, he was out of a job. Sermanni was fired by the U.S. Soccer Federation on Sunday after a disappointing finish last month at the Algarve Cup. The surprising move came just 16 months after he was put in charge. The dismissal was announced hours after Lauren Holiday and substitute Megan Rapinoe scored in the exhibition victory over China in Commerce City, Colo. “We felt that we needed to go in a different direction at this time,” USSF President Sunil Gulati said. He said the federation will begin looking for a new coach immediately, with the team looking toward qualifying for the 2015 Womens World Cup. On Monday, a message on goalkeeper Hope Solos Twitter account addressed the firing: “Its a sombre day for us all today. Tom is simply a classy man in every way, and he will certainly be missed.” Jill Ellis, the USSFs director of development, will serve as interim coach. She went 5-0-2 in that role in 2012. The womens team faces China again on Thursday in San Diego. “I was completely blindsided,” Sermanni told SI.com on Sunday night. “Maybe Im losing my intuitive and perception skills, but I didnt sense a real unease in the team. But I could be wrong in that regard.” Sermanni said he assumes there was “some degree of dissatisfaction among the players, otherwise we wouldnt have gotten to this point so quickly now.” He added that the players did what he asked and he has “no qualms with them in the sense of having poor relations with them.” He was hired in October 2012, but Ellis served as interim coach until he took over that January. Sermanni made his debut in a 4-1 win over his native Scotland on Feb. 10, 2013. He spent the previous eight years coaching Australias womens team, leading the Matildas to the quarterfinals of the last two World Cups. Sermanni helped the U.S. to a 13-0-3 record laast year, but the Americans went 1-2-1 at the Algarve Cup, the last major tournament for the U.dddddddddddd.S. before qualifying for next years World Cup. The seventh-place finish included a 1-0 defeat to Sweden and former U.S. coach Pia Sundhage, ending a two-year, 43-game unbeaten streak. That was the first loss following a 16-0-4 start under Sermanni. “To put it in a nutshell, they just felt that the way I was managing the team wasnt working,” Sermanni told SI.com. “It could be the U.S. team is a unique team that has certain demands that perhaps my management style or my philosophy didnt quite jell with.” His firing came about six months before North and Central American and Caribbean World Cup qualifying, which takes place from Oct. 16-26 at Cancun and Playa del Carmen, Mexico. On Sunday, Sermanni experimented with a 4-3-3 alignment (four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards) and talked about the team making the most of its offensive opportunities. “I thought our movement was good, thought our passing was quite incisive,” Sermanni said. “What we shouldve done better is finish the game off a lot earlier. We really need to be finishing these games off when were creating chances.” The U.S. outshot China 23-1 and ran its unbeaten streak on home turf to 81 games (71-0-10). Holiday was back in the lineup after missing the Algarve Cup because of a family commitment. She scored in the 39th minute — the U.S. finally solving goalkeeper Zhang Yue after a flurry of shots. Holiday nearly had another goal early in the second half, only to have it deflected near the goal line. The defence allowed only one scoring chance to China, which played defensively even after falling behind. “The most important thing is coming together now and figuring out what works and what doesnt,” forward Sydney Leroux said. “Were getting better every single day.” Any further improvement will come under a new coach. They think they got both by agreeing to a $2.9 million, one-year contract with Carlos Pena. “We believe he is exactly the kind of player we need in this organization at this time,” general manager Jeff Luhnow said Monday. “We think that hes going to be a big contributor for us on the field as well as in the clubhouse next year.” Pena will be the Astros designated hitter, addressing a key need as they prepare for their first season in the American League. But Luhnow said Pena could also play first base. “I think he provides some flexibility because hes a left-handed batter who can play a good first base defensively,” Luhnow said. “So that gives you some options … he can still play very good first base, and we expect to see him at first base a little bit.” The 34-year-old Pena, who spent last season in his second stint with Tampa Bay, hit .197 with 19 home runs and 61 RBIs in 2012, when he made $7.5 million. In addition to his base salary, he can earn $1.4 million in performance bonuses, $233,333 each for 350, 400, 450, 500, 550 and 600 plate appearances. He has hit below .200 in two of the past three seasons and struck out a career-high 182 times last season. But he also draws a lot of walks — he had 87 last season — and has continued to drive in runs despite his dipping averages. “There are so many things that I have to improve,” he said. “There are so many things that Ive been so good at, and other things that Ive been challenged with. The game has changed so you adapt and make adjustments … Im always learning.” He said that he had other offers, but felt as if Houston was the right fit for him. “Everything seems so fresh so I wanted to be part of that new identity,” he said. “Hopefully as we start creating our new identity and shhaping up our culture, I want to make sure that I do everything I can to start steering it in the right direction.dddddddddddd” Pena had the best seasons of his career in his first stint with the Rays from 2007-2010 when he had at least 100 RBIs in three of those four seasons. His most productive year came in his first with the team when he hit 46 homers with 121 RBIs, both career highs. Pena started his career with the Rangers, and has hit 277 homers with 791 RBIs in a 12-year career that also had stops in Oakland, Detroit, Boston and with the Cubs. He has history with new Houston manager Bo Porter, having played with Porter in spring training when he was in the Rangers minor league system. Hes undaunted by the fact that Houston has lost more than 100 games in each of the past two seasons and isnt expected to contend in its move to the powerful AL West next season. Pena was in a similar situation in Tampa Bay. They Rays had lost 95 and 101 games respectively in the two seasons before he joined the team. They lost 96 in his first season there in 2007 before winning 97 games the next season and reaching the World Series. “It actually was inviting to me,” he said of joining a rebuilding team. “Ive been on teams where we were thought to be the worst in baseball at one point and very quickly, sooner than anyone expected, we were in a World Series. So Ive seen things change very quickly. … I like the challenge that it presents and the potential for growth.” Some had speculated that the signing of Pena would eliminate the possibility of the Astros bringing back slugger Lance Berkman. Luhnow said that wasnt the case. “We need to do everything we can to improve this team,” Luhnow said. “And if we get to a point where Lance is interested in playing and we find that we can utilize him, which we obviously can if hes healthy, then well have a conversation with him.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

Téma: Jak postupovat / "This means a lot.

The New York Rangers will try to take a commanding 3-0 series lead and push the Montreal Canadiens to the brink of elimination in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final on Thursday at Madison Square Garden in New York. After erasing a 3-1 series deficit against the Penguins in the second round though, the Rangers know that things can change quickly in a best-of-seven series. Theyre not about to look ahead or become complacent thanks to that experience and the winning pedigree of their veteran leaders. “Plays happen fast; emotional swings happen fast, penalties happen fast and different things do because everything is magnified,” Rangers forward Brian Boyle pointed out. "So if you can kind of keep your heart rate at a steady level, I think its beneficial. “But people talk about the whole experience of the playoffs, winning it all or just getting to the finals and we have some people that have been through it. Thats kept everybody on an even keel and trying to work for that next goal and that next win. Thats what we need to continue to do.” After being shut out in Games 2 and 3 of that second-round series against Pittsburgh and then mustering just 15 shots in their 4-2 loss in Game 4, the Rangers used that leadership to do some soul-searching and havent lost since. “We got a group in here that no matter what, were gonna play and were gonna play hard,” said Boyle, who has four points in the playoffs. “Thats something that came when things changed after Game 4 in that last series. That feeling stuck with us for two days. Teams have had bad losses, Ive had bad losses but theres nothing quite like that one. But the way weve rallied together through adversity, every guy in this room, its got us to here. But we still got quite a bit of that mountain left to climb.” Thats why they plan to be ready for a Montreal team that is in a similar state to what New York was following that demoralizing Game 4 loss to the Penguins. “Im sure theyre going to be motivated and we need to match that,” Boyle said. “Theres mistakes we made and we need to correct those and be even better. We need to be ready and be ready for their best. This is the playoffs and you need four wins to win a series and that doesnt come easily.” James Murphy is a freelance reporter who also writes for NHL.com, the Boston Herald and XNsports.com. GREER, S.C. — Former South Carolina player Mark Anderson won the BMW Charity Pro-Am on Sunday for his first Web.com Tour title, closing with a 6-under 65 at the Thornblade Club for a five-stroke victory. The 27-year-old Anderson had a tournament-record 27-under 259 total, the third-lowest score in relation to par in tour history. He opened with a 63 at The Reserve at Lake Keowee, added a 67 at Greenville Country Club and took a one-stroke lead Saturday with a 64 at Thornblade. Anderson earned $117,000 to jump from 133rd to ninth on the money list with $124,535. “To get that first professional victory is the toughest,” Anderson said. "This means a lot. Its been four years really and its been a struggle this year. It really hasnt looked that great but I felt good this week. “To get this victory in South Carolina is awesome. This state has done so much for me as far as golf. The SSouth Carolina Junior Golf Association and the South Carolina Golf Association can take credit for this win and lots of other wins by South Carolina natives.dddddddddddd. To get it here in front of my mom, my dad and my grandparents, it couldnt be any better.” Tom Hoge shot a 67 to finish second. Chesson Hadley, Michael Connell and Franklin Corpening tied for third at 21 under. Hadley had a 63, Connell shot 65, and Corpening closed with a 70. Hadley matched the tour record for nine holes when he went out in 8-under 27, making six birdies and an eagle. “I played well,” Hadley said. “I think I learned quite a bit last year. I was in this position and failed. Today, I really hit the ball beautifully from the fourth hole on and I hope I can keep it going. This is my second year out here and Im a little more comfortable on the courses. I know what to expect now.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

TORONTO – There may come a time in the next few years when the Houston Astros are a good baseball team. That time, however, is not now and with apologies to the “Its Early” crowd, with whom we typically should all agree hardly removed from opening day, this three-game home set with the Houston Astros is important to the Blue Jays. Nobody is suggesting that, say, if Toronto gets swept its season is over. But a check of the math tells you it doesnt help. The Blue Jays, by virtue of their perch in the American League East, have the unenviable task of playing 76 of their 162 games against their four divisional opponents. They get the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles 19 times each, a veritable meat grinder that can chew up and spit out the hope for a successful season all by itself. Lets say, for the sake of argument, the Blue Jays go 38-38 against their own division. That leaves 86 games against non-divisional opponents. To get to 90 wins, which likely wont be enough to win the division and may or may not be enough to capture one of the two wild card spots, Toronto would have to go 52-34. So far, after splitting a four-game series in Tampa Bay and disappointingly dropping two of three at home to the Yankees, the Jays are 3-4 within the AL East. Houston marks the first non-divisional opponent and due to the make up of the schedule, this is the only time the Astros will visit Toronto all year. It doesnt matter whether its April, June, or the intensity filled months of August and September, Houstons only here once and when they visit the Jays need to make hay. More than anything, manager John Gibbons wants his club to better protect home soil. “Ive always said you cant bury yourself early,” said Gibbons. “Especially in this division, its an uphill battle and its real tough to come back. Were trying to get off to a good start and with more games at home itd be nice to finish up good at home. Youve got to play good at home, its no secret. Hold your own on the road and play good baseball at home.” JEKYLL AND HYDE ROTATION The biggest question facing the Blue Jays (3-4) heading into the season centred on the starting rotation. Could it hold up in the toughest division in baseball? In the wins, Dr. Jekyll rules the day. When Torontos lost, Mr. Hyde rears his ugly face. Heres a look at the numbers through the first seven games: In the three wins, no runs allowed in 20 2/3 innings pitched. April 1: Drew Hutchison, 5.1 innings pitched.April 2: Mark Buehrle, 8.2 IP.April 5: R.A. Dickey, 6.2 IP. In the four losses, the starts have allowed a staggering 20 earned runs in just 16 innings pitched (11.25 ERA, averaging four innings pitched per start): March 31: R.A. Dickey, 6 earned runs in 5 innings pitched.April 3: Brandon Morrow, 4 ER in 5 IP.April 4: Dustin McGowan, 4 ER in 2.2 IP.April 6: Drew Hutchison, 6 ER in 3.1 IP. ROTATION JUGGLING Mondays off day has afforded manager John Gibbons the opportunity to flip R.A. Dickey and Dustin McGowan, meaning Dickey will start Thursdays series finale against the Astros and McGowan will open a three-game set in Baltimore on Friday night. “Thatll split up Morrow and McGowan,” said Gibbons. “The two guys were watching a little bit. Put Dickey in the middle and he can eat some innings, anyway.” Dickey has repeatedly said he prefers pitching under a roof, although Gibbons denied the forecasted cool conditions outdoors in Baltimore factored in to the decision. REYES UPDATE Jose Reyes, eligible to come off the disabled list from a strained left hamstring on April 16, ran the treadmill and took ground balls during batting practice on Tuesday afternoon. “Ill know better when I start running and see how Im feeling,” said Reyes. “For now, Ill just take it day by day and see what happens.” Reyes has been hitting to maintain his batting stroke but still has yet to run at full speed. When Reyes is ready to play, he expects to appear in at least a couple of minor league rehab games before returning to the Blue Jays. JANSSEN UPDATE Casey Janssen, out with an abdominal/back strain, doesnt think hell be ready to come off the disabled list when hes eligible on Sunday. “Probably not,” said Janssen. “I dont know the exact date but Ive got to get on a rehab somewhere; hopefully shortly thereafter.” Janssen expects only to need one or two minor league rehab games before hes back with the Blue Jays. The man who will carry the Maple Leaf at the opening ceremonies of the Pan American Paralympic Games says keeping a narrow focus will be important for Canadian athletes hoping to win medals. Wheelchair basketball player David Durepos gave the advice to the team after being named the Canadian flagbearer Wednesday for the opening ceremonies of the Parapan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. “You have to focus on the little things that got you here,” Durepos said during a telephone interview with The Canadian Press. "Its the little things that are going to get you on the podium. “If you think of winning a medal thats a great goal. Its not the same as your focus.” The Fredericton native was announced as the flagbearer for Saturdays opening ceremonies at a Canadian team pep rally and flag-raising ceremony at the Paralympic Village. “Im pretty excited, honoured and humbled at the same time,” he said. "Ive always been honoured and humbled to wear the Canadian jersey. “Now to be the flagbearer, its quite special.” Durepos has been on the national wheelchair basketball team since 1994 and is considered one of the worlds best outside shooters. He has won two gold medals and a silver at the Paralympic Games. He also won a silver medal at the 2007 Parapan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This years Parapan Am Games will begin Saturday and go to Nov. 20. Canada will sent a team of 121 athletes, 11 guides and 73 officials to compete in 11 of the 13 sports. Durepos learned a lesson about focusing when the wheelchair basketball team lost to Australia in the gold medal game of the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing. “It sort of bit us in the butt,” said Durepos, who is married to Canadian womens wheelchair basketball player Sabrina Pettinicchi. "Everyone was talking that if we won the gold it would be the first time a mens team would have three-peated at the Paralympics. “I think there was too much emphasis placed upon that. We fell a little bit short. Thats why I think its really important to narrow your focus down and just work on the little things.” Selection criteria for the flagbearer require the athlete exhibit a commitment to fair play; be respected as a role model by other athletes; maintain an exemplary standard of behaviour; and have made a contribution to Paralympic sport and the sporting community. “David exemplifies both the excellence in athletic achievement and the leadership values that all Canadian team flagbearers share,” chef de mission Rob Needham said in a news release. “We know that Team Canada members will be proud to enter the stadium behind David.” The Parapan Ams are expected attract 1,500 athletes from 25 countries. At the 2007 Parapans in Rio, Canada won 112 medal (49 gold, 37 silver, 26 bronze). That left Canada second in the country standings behind host Brazil. Wheelchair basketball player Jen Krempien was the flagbearer for the opening ceremonies. Swimmer Benoit Huot, who won three gold and four silvers, carried the Maple Leaf at the closing ceremonies. The Parapan Ams will serve as a direct qualifier for the London 2012 Paralympic Games in wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball. To book a ticket to London the mens and womens wheelchair basketball teams need to finish in the top three in Guadalajara. The mens sitting volleyball team must win gold to qualify for London. Durepos said the basketball team heads into the Parapan Ams focused on securing a spot in London. “We are definitely motivated,” he said. "When you are on top of the mountain, and you get knocked down a notch like it happened to us in Beijing, you want to get right back to where you belong. “We have taken a new approach. We are not looking too far ahead, We are just taking the little steps we need to accomplish our goals.” . — The basic role that Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito shared as offensive linemen for the Miami Dolphins was protecting quarterback Ryan Tannehill. DENVER — Peyton Manning and Matt Prater were more about big numbers than the little one Sunday. As in, an NFL-record 64-yard field goal to go along with 39 completions, 397 yards passing and, of course, 51 points. That the temperature was only 18 degrees at kickoff and only 14 when Prater kicked his way to one of the most iconic records in the game felt more annoying than anything. Same for the opponent — the Tennessee Titans, who fought gamely for a half before falling 51-28 on Sunday to the Broncos, who clinched a playoff berth. As for all those doubts about Mannings abilities in the cold: “I wont try to answer it because I didnt give it any validation in the first place,” said the quarterback, who is now 4-7 in games where the temperature is 32 or below at kickoff. The cold certainly didnt bother Prater, who lashed his 64-yarder through the icy air on the last play of the first half. Yes, it was at altitude in Denver, same as two of the four 63-yarders from years past. “But I think the 10-degree weather takes out the altitude,” Prater said. Mannings 39 completions set a team record. His 59 attempts matched a franchise high. His seven games this year with at least four touchdowns are the most in NFL history. Hes now in the playoffs for the 13th time, which breaks a record for a quarterback that he shared with Brett Favre. Manning led the Broncos (11-2) past the 50-point mark for the third time this year, the first time a team has done that since the NFL merger in 1970. The Broncos ran a whopping 91 plays on offence, giving them plenty of chances to eat away at a 21-10 second-quarter deficit. “We were doing well at the beginning, but they took off like a rocket,” Titans cornerback Alterraun Verner said. Despite the gaudy numbers, Manning and Prater were about the only Broncos clicking on all cylinders on the day coach John Fox rejoined the team and coached from the sideline after missing four games because of heart surgery. The special teams gave up a 95-yard kickoff return — the second return of 90-plus it has allowed in the last two games. The Titans (5-8) burned the Denver defence a few times early, most notably when Ryan Fitzpatrick (13 for 24, 172 yards) picked on rookie cornerback Kayvon Webster on the first drive for a 57-yard completion to Justin Hunter that set up the games first touchdown. There were about a half-dozen dropped passes and the Broncos had a whale of a time punching the ball in from the 1. They needed 11 snaps from that distance to get two touchdowns and a field goal. Those struggles turned Praters record-setting attempt into much more than a theatrical flourish, which is what most field goals are for a team that has now put up 515 points through 13 games. Denver had cut its deficit to 21-17 and a penalty forced Manning to start from his 15 with 52 seconds left in the first half. An 18-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas got the ball near midfield with 7 seconds left. Then Manning completed a quick 7-yarder to Jacob Tamme, who went out of bounds with 3 seconds. On came Prater. With steam pouring from his mouth, he lined up on the right hash mark at the Denver 46, just a few steps over from the eye of the Broncos logo. The kick cleared the crossbar with a bit of room to spare, and holder Britton Colquitt jumped piggyback onto the kicker to celebrate. “I think I just said, Kick it as hard as you can,” Colquitt said. “I didnt want to put that bug in, Hey, this is the record.” Prater broke the mark held by four kickers, set first in 1970 by Tom Dempsey and most recently matched by David Akers, whose kick last season in Green Bay bounced on the crossbar before going over. Manning led the Broncos on an 80-yard scoring drive to open the third quarter and the Broncos didnt trail again. And speaking of big numbers: The quarterbacks 4,522 yards and 45 touchdowns this season remain on pace to break the NFL records of 5,476 and 50. NOTES: The Broncos dedicated the press box to longtime public-relations man Jim Saccomano, who is retiring after the season. … Titans WR Justin Hunter cracked the 100-yard mark for the second time in three weeks, finishing with four catches for 115 yards. … Knowshon Moreno and Wes Welker each reached double digits in touchdowns Sunday and the Broncos became the first team to have four players score 10 or more in a season. By the sixth inning, both Royals rookies figured out how to hit the floater. Alex Gordon and Hosmer each drove in two runs in an eight-run sixth inning to help the Royals rally to beat the Boston Red Sox 9-4 on Saturday night, depriving knuckleballer Tim Wakefield of his 200th victory. Wakefield, who is 0-2 with three no-decisions since a July 24 triumph over Seattle, took a 4-1 lead into the sixth, but failed to get out of the inning. He was pulled after giving up three consecutive hits with one out and the Red Sox holding onto a 4-3 advantage. “A lot of these kids had never even seen a knuckleball before, so the third time around might have made a difference,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He would leave a couple up, but the majority were really dancing good and really dive bombing once it got into the strike zone. “The speed of 66-67 miles per hour is difficult to time when the ball is fluttering that much. Finally there in the sixth, we did some damage. His knuckleball was really dancing. It was good to get him out of there. It was good to keep the hits coming.” Gordons two-run double off Matt Albers (4-4) put the Royals up 6-4. Hosmer, who started the rally with a single off Wakefield, capped off scoring with a two-run triple off Franklin Morales. “It was different,” Hosmer said of facing Wakefields knuckleball. "It seems like every pitch is moving some way different. Some are dropping and some are staying up. Youve got to tell yourself dont overswing, nice and easy and take it the other way. Thats why hes been in the game this long cause its a great pitch. When he throws it and its moving how he wants it to move, its pretty effective. “That first fastball from that left-hander (Morales) seemed like it was 105 miles per hour after seeing knuckleballs all the time.” The Royals also got run-producing doubles by Jeff Francoeur and Mike Moustakas. Chris Getzs single scored Moustakas to tie the score at 4-4. “Hes got an unbelievable knuckleball,” Moustakas said. "You saw what he did the first five innings. He shut us down pretty good. Thats just a tribute to what he does. Hes been in this league a long time and it shows you what hes capable of. “Hitting the knuckleball is not an easy thing. Its tough. It dances all over the plate. You almost have to get lucky a little bit for the ball to float into your zone and you put a good swing on it.” The eight-run sixth matched a Royaals season-high for an inning.dddddddddddd Gordon led the Royals offence with two doubles and an eighth inning single for his 500th career hit. The 45-year-old Wakefield gave up four runs and nine hits in 5 1-3 innings. Hosmer, Moustakas and Salvador Perez were not even born when Wakefield began his professional career in 1988 as a weak-hitting first baseman for Watertown in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system. He moved to the mound the next year. “Im not frustrated,” Wakefield said. “I felt normal just like the last five starts. I take it like a normal start. Im trying to get outs and give us a quality start.” Boston built a 3-1 lead in the fourth when they had four singles and a walk. Carl Crawfords single scored Dustin Pedroia, who led off the inning with a single. Darnell McDonalds sacrifice fly scored Josh Reddick with the other run. The Red Sox missed an opportunity for a much bigger inning when former Royal Mike Aviles flied out to deep centre, leaving the bases loaded. Boston added a run in the sixth when Ryan Lavarnways single brought home Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who led off the inning with a double, for his first big league RBI. The Red Sox scored a run in the third, which Lavarnway led off with a walk, took second on a Paulino wild pitch and third on a Darnell McDonald bunt single. He scored when Marco Scutaro grounded into a double play. Billy Butlers double to right in the bottom of the inning scored Escobar. Notes: While CF Jacoby Ellsbury was held out of the Red Sox lineup with a back bruise, Scutaro returned to the lineup Saturday after missing the previous six games with a stiff back. Ellsbury suffered a contusion after being hit in the back by an Everett Teaford pitch in the eighth inning Friday. Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Ellsbury is “pretty sore” and is unlikely to play Sunday. Darnell McDonald replaced Ellsbury, making his fourth start of the season in centre. … 2B Chris Getz was in the Royals starting lineup for the first time since Aug. 4. Johnny Giavotella, who had started 15 consecutive games at second since his Aug. 4 promotion from class AAA Omaha, was given the day off. … Red Sox LHP Jon Lester, who starts Sunday, is 4-1 with a 1.28 earned-run average in six career starts against the Royals, including a no-hitter in 2008. Lester, however, is 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in his lone start at Kauffman Stadium. Blake Wheeler and Olli Jokinen lead Winnipeg with four points, while Craig Smith has four for the Predators.ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills are starting to get their injured quarterbacks back. And it is giving coach Doug Marrone more options to improve the Bills offence. A day after watching undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel throw two interceptions in a 23-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Marrone on Monday was preparing to welcome back his two most experienced quarterbacks to practice. Rookie first-round pick EJ Manuel is cleared to play after missing four weeks with a sprained right knee. And Manuels replacement, Thad Lewis, will be back after missing one game with bruised ribs. Marrone wants to see how both perform in practice before determining which one starts Sunday, when the Bills (3-6) travel to play the Steelers (2-6). He didnt rule out either, but was particularly cautious in assessing Manuels chances of playing. “We feel really good, but weve got to be careful, though. Lets make sure,” Marrone said. “In the back of my mind, Im thinking to make sure hes 110 per cent and were not putting a player out there that can jeopardize himself.” Manuel called himself ready to play, which is something hes already made sure to stress to Marrone. “He knows where Im at,” Manuel said, speaking to reporters for the first time since being hurt. “Its up to coach. I know Im going to be out there ready to go to practice and get back to work with the guys.” Manuel spent last week throwing passes to receivers before and after practice. He stepped up that process during pregame warm-ups Sunday. “Its feeling a lot better,” Manuel said. “Definitely looking forward to getting into practice full course and taking as many reps as coach allows me to get.” Lewis, meanwhile, threw passes on Monday for the first time since being hurt in a 35-17 loss at New Orleans on Oct. 27. Buffalo also made a move at quarterback by releasing Matt Flynn, three weeks after signing the sixth-year player in free agency. The Bills depth at quarterback has been unsettled since Manuel was hurt in a 37-24 loss at Cleveland on Oct. 3. After Tuel struggled in replacing Manuel against the Browns, the Bills turned to Leewis by promoting him from their practice squad.dddddddddddd Lewis went 1-2 in three starts — including a 23-21 win at Miami on Oct. 20 — before being sidelined. That left Buffalo with little choice but to start Tuel against the Chiefs. Tuel went 18 of 39 for 229 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Tuels second interception was particularly costly, coming on third-and-goal at the 1. He was picked off by cornerback Sean Smith, who returned it 100 yards for a touchdown that tied the game at 10 in the third quarter. Another turnover sealed the loss after linebacker Tamba Hali returned receiver T.J. Grahams fumble 11 yards for a score. Running back Fred Jackson acknowledged the constant change at quarterback has stunted the offences development. “I think any time you have inconsistency back there its going to make it tough, or adverse,” Jackson said. "You want to be consistent. You want to have somebody back there thats steady throughout the season. And that helps you grow as an offence. Not having that I think it definitely has played a role in us having some ups and downs. Manuel got the Bills off to a 2-2 start before getting injured for the second time in two months. He missed the final two preseason games after having surgery to repair a left knee injury, which he hurt while scrambling in a 20-16 win over Minnesota. In both instances, Manuel was faulted for putting himself in a position to get hit by failing to slide or get out of bounds. Manuel said he needs to be smarter when it comes to avoiding injuries. “Im not going to play scared or anything like that,” Manuel said. “Im going to continue to get as many yards as I can, but at the same time slide or get out bounds, throw it away or whatever when I you get out of the pocket.” In cutting Flynn, the Bills filled the roster spot by signing fullback Evan Rodriguez. Selected in the fourth round of the 2012 draft by Chicago, he had four catches for 21 yards in 12 games last season. Rodriguez was waived by the Bears in June after being charged with driving under the influence, his second alcohol-related arrest. NEW YORK — The New York Mets have put infielder Justin Turner on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained right ankle and cut right-handed reliever Manny Acosta. The Mets recalled righty Chris Schwinden from Triple-A Buffalo and selected the contract of infielder Omar Quintanilla before Tuesday nights game. Quintanilla started at shortstop against Philadelphia. Turner was hurt during a rundown Monday. A key pinch hitter, he is hitting .269 with 10 RBIs and has played all four infield positions. Acosta was 1-2 with an 11.86 ERA in 19 games. The Mets designated him for assignment a day he gave up a game-breaking homer to Philadelphias Ty Wigginton. Schwinden is 0-1 in two starts for New York, shuttling between the majors and minors as the Mets deal with injuries. “The bus from Buffalo arrived today, as it normally does,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said. He was a quiet leader who led by example andd always represented this organization and himself with class.dddddddddddd” Hejduks career was a decorated one. The three-time All-Star won a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2001 and two Olympic medals (gold in 1998 and bronze in 2006). In 2002-03, Hejduk won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy for finishing the season as the NHLs top goal-scorer with 50. He eclipsed the 30-goal plateau five times and scored at least 20 goals in 11 times. Last season saw Hejduks worst offensive output, scoring only four times in 29 games of the lockout-shortened year, finding himself a healthy scratch at times. The Avalanche did not offer Hejduk a contract following last season, although, Hejduk did express desire to play on. He finishes his career with 375 goals and 470 assists in 1020 games played, the second-most in Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques history. He holds the franchise record for most overtime goals with nine. Hejduk is the third-highest scoring Czech player in NHL history behind Jaromir Jagr and Patrik Elias. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Antoine Vermette scored late in the first period, Mike Smith stopped 23 shots and the Phoenix Coyotes got back to their defensive ways in a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night. After some shaky performances coming out of the Olympic break, the Coyotes had a strong night in their own end, blocking shots and limiting scoring opportunities. Phoenix held Vancouver to 12 shots until midway through the third period. Smith made some tough saves down the stretch for his third shutout of the season and 27th in his career, helping Phoenix move ahead of Vancouver to tie Winnipeg for ninth in the Western Conference. Eddie Lack kept Vancouver in it with 31 saves, but the Canucks were unable get much going offensively to lose for the ninth time in 10 games. Both teams needed a jump-start after slipping down the Western Conference pecking order. Vancouver lost seven straight games before the Olympic break and followed a victory over St. Louis by losing to Minnesota, then Ottawa. Adding to the Canucks problems, Daniel Sedin, tied for the team lead in points, suffered a lower-body injury against the Senators and was out against the Coyotes. The team also dealt veteran goalie Robert Luongo to Florida earlier Tuesday. Phoenix has been inconsistent since starting the season strong, following wins against some of the NHLs best teams with losses against some of the worst. Despite saying they needed to play with urgency, the Coyotes have laboured since the Olympic break ended, earning one point in three games. Phoenix has had trouble holding leads, coughing it up five times in the past 11 games, including Sundays 4-2 loss to the Blues, when they gave up four goals in the third period. Vancouver had a similar problem against the Senators, allowing four straight goals after going up 2-0. The Coyotes and Canucks played with a testiness expected between two teams scrapping for a playoff spot, with plenty of hitting, pushing and shoving throughout the first period. Phoenix had good pressure in the period and broke through late when Vermette fought off two Canucks and took a couple of swipes before knocking in a rebound for his 22nd of the season. The Coyotes kept up the pressure in the second period, but Lack was sharp, making some tough saves, particularly during an early Phoenix flurry. Vancouver couldnt find any holes in Phoenixs defence, though, going 13 minutes spanning the second and third periods without a shot on goal. The Coyotes thought they had a 2-0 lead when Mikkel Boedker scored midway through the third period. But it was waved off because Vermette, who was being held down by two Canucks players, was in the crease. It didnt matter the way they were playing defence and Smith was seeing pucks in his crease. Notes: A moment of silence was held before the game for two Phoenix police officers, including one who died, during a shootout on Monday. … The Coyotes added what they hope will be a valuable scorer, acquiring Martin Erat and John Mitchell from the Capitals for forward Chris Brown, defenceman Rostislav Klesla and a fourth-round selection in the 2015 draft. … Coyotes C Martin Hanzal did not play due to a lower-body injury. … Vermette has scored 11 of his 22 goals this season against Canadian opponents. … Vancouver plays at Dallas on Thursday in another game against a team fighting for one of the Wests last playoff spots. SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Dustin Tokarski stopped all 43 shots he faced as the Hamilton Bulldogs blanked the host Syracuse Crunch 3-0 on Saturday in American Hockey League action. Nathan Beaulieu and Christian Thomas had a goal and an assist apiece for the Bulldogs (9-7-3), who used their power play to supply all of their offence, and Martin St. Pierre tacked on two assists. Greg Pateryn added a single goal to round out Hamiltons scoring. Nikita Nesterov led the Crunch (9-6-2) with seven shots on goal while Cedrick Desjardins turned away 30-of-33 shots in defeat. Tokarski kept his club in the game early by turning away 15 shots in the first period. Thomas opened the scoring 1:29 into the second while Syracuse blue liner Matt Taormina was serving a minor for tripping. Taorminas period got worse as he picked up another minor for delay of game at 5:51, which led to Pateryn making it 2-0 for Hamilton at 7:18. Beaulieu added another power-play goal for the Bulldogs at 6:47 of the third period. He wants to find more competition through the draft and free agency — and thats not changing simply because team owner Jim Irsay isnt around. At the team complex, Grigson said its been pretty much business-as-usual since Irsay was arrested Sunday night following a traffic stop. He faces preliminary charges of misdemeanour driving while intoxicated and four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance. “He leaves the football stuff to me. He trusts me. Thats what he hired me to do,” Grigson said during Fridays conference call with local reporters, his first public comments since the arrest. “If theres something major, a transaction thats going to go down, or I need to use his plane in free agency, or if theres something I need to lean on him about in terms of using his football knowledge, from my benefit and the clubs benefit, then I reach out to him.” Normally, in mid-March, Irsay, who once served as the Colts GM, is involved with draft preparation and signs off on any major deals. Its a lot different right now. On Tuesday, Irsays family issued a statement saying he had voluntarily checked himself into a treatment facility. The move comes more than a decade ago after Irsay acknowledged a painkiller dependency. Its unclear when Irsay will return to run the team. If Irsay is charged and convicted on the felonies, he could face six months to three years in prison on each one. Irsay also could be fined or suspended by the NFL. But its not as if Grigson doesnt have help. He usually consults with coach Chuck Pagano before making decisions and one of Irsays daughters, Carlie, also is filling in while her father is out. “Basically, Carlie is just in place of Jim, for right now,” Grigson said. “Hes never been a micro manager, never has meddled or anything like that. He leaves football decisions up to myself and the head coach. Hes reallyy been great in that respect.ddddddddddddCarlie is going to be in his place while hes recovering.” With or without Irsay, Grigson likes the direction Indianapolis is going. Before the free-agent market opened March 11, Grigson devoted much of his time trying to work out deals with his own players. Eventually, he re-signed a handful of players including punter Pat McAfee, kicker Adam Vinatieri, running back Ahmad Bradshaw and cornerback Vontae Davis. He also dipped into the free-agent pool and plucked linebacker DQwell Jackson, defensive lineman Arthur Jones, receiver Hakeem Nicks and centre Phil Costa. Grigson may not be finished, either. Last year, he nabbed receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey in April and Bradshaw in June — a scenario that could be in play again. “We feel real good where we are at right now,” Grigson said. “Of course, we are going to look toward the draft, but you never say never. We are always trying to get better.” On the field, the big questions primarily surround Indys injured players. Grigson said the rehab process is on schedule for starting guard Donald Thomas (quad) and running back Vick Ballard (knee). The team has already said starting tight end Dwayne Allen (hip) is healthy, too. What about perennial Pro Bowl receiver Reggie Wayne, who tore the ACL in his right knee in October? “Reggie is just one guy we dont have to worry about,” Grigson said. “Hes kind of like that Jerry Rice type mindset. He just doesnt stop working and hes so determined. I really dont worry about him and I know Chuck doesnt. I feel like hell be ready to roll.” Grigson hopes thats the case with Irsay, too. “Everyone in the building loves the man,” Grigson said. “We all would run through a brick wall for him. We all just really wish him a full and complete recovery and we are all really pulling for him.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

Anze Kopitar scored 5:29 into the first period to help Slovenia beat Austria 4-0 on Tuesday in the qualification round of the Sochi Olympics, extending the experience of playing for his father in international competition. The Olympic hockey rookies will face top-seeded and 2006 Olympic champion Sweden on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. Kopitar, who plays for the Los Angeles Kings, is the only NHL player on the Slovenia squad. His father, Matjaz, is the national teams coach. Robert Kristan had a 30-save shutout for the Slovenes, and he got plenty of support offensively. Jan Urbas scored a short-handed goal midway through the first period, and Sabahudin Kovacevics slap shot put Slovenia up 3-0 early in the second. Austria called timeout late in the game to add an extra skater and Slovenias Jan Mursak took advantage with an empty-net goal. The Austrians lost their first two games by a combined score of 14-4 to Finland and Canada before beating Norway 3-1 in their final game of the preliminary round. Their goaltender, Mathias Lange, made 31 saves. Kopitar beat him with a shot from the slot early in the game, and that proved to be the only goal the feel-good team needed to keep playing in the tournament it wasnt expected to be in a little more than a year ago. Slovenia earned a surprising spot in the Sochi Games by knocking off Belarus, Ukraine and Denmark in last years qualification tournament. It was an impressive accomplishment for a hockey team ranked 17th in the world from a nation with fewer than 2 million people, only seven hockey rinks and only one professional team. Instead of being just satisfied to be here, Slovenia beat usually steady Slovakia 3-1 in the preliminary round. Austria, meanwhile, is eliminated with one victory and three lopsided losses. Slovenia got two key players back in the playoff round. Kopitar didnt finish the previous game against the U.S. because of flu-like symptoms. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry Fraser wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Mr. Fraser, please explain to me what happened on OT in the Sharks-Isles game over the weekend? One linesman is clearly seen making the tipped sign for the puck going out of play, then all of a sudden they huddle and say “Delay of Game,” pretty much costing the Isles a shot of an extra point. As you watch the replays, one linesman is ducking so he has no view of it and the other says tipped, why then would they change the call? Joe from NYC -— Hi Kerry, Not many people have seen the missed call on the Island Saturday night that led to the Sharks overtime win against the Islanders, but I am sure you have. Like coach Capuano said after the game officials have a tough job. However, most of us in the stands seen it and so did all the players and staff. Why when in doubt did two officials and two linesman conclude that the puck went straight out of play and not just say no one seen it – so no call? No calls like that happen all the time on high sticking incidents. Also since that is not a judgment call should it be re-viewable? Tom Heiser,New Jersey Joe and Tom: I must concur with NY Islander coach Jack Capuanos post game comment, “The game officials have a tough job.” Saturday night at the Nassau Coliseum an incorrect assessment on a delay of game penalty in overtime made their job even tougher and resulted in the game winning goal being scored with San Jose on the power play. Whether you like rule 63.2 – Delaying the Game or hate it, let me assure you it can be extremely difficult for the officials, in the very best of circumstance, to detect if the puck is shot directly out of the rink unless it clears the glass by a wide margin. Factor in the possibility of an active stick on the fore-check, player traffic, distance and angle of all the officials from the play and even the dark winter clothing the spectators wear can affect the game officials clarity in making the right decision. That is why there is often a huddle by the officiating crew to gather a consensus from various on-ice positions to attempt to get it right. In this case they obviously didnt get it right at a crucial time which negatively impacted the game. For those of you that didnt see the play let me describe what took place. With the teams playing four aside in OT, Islander defenceman Travis Hamonic gained possession of the puck deep in his end zone corner to the left of goalkeeper Rick DiPietro. Hamonic started to skate with the puck as John Tavares bolted past Brent Burns of San Jose at the Islanders blue line on the same side of the ice as Hamonic and close to where linesman Jonny Murray was correctly positioned. Also on this side of the ice and skating backwards to lead the approaching Islander attack was referee Mike Hasenfratz. From this vantage point Hasenfratz was focused on Burns attempted grab with his free hand on Taveres for a potential holding/interference infraction. Logan Couture of the Sharks pressured Travis Hamonic, who then attempted to chip the puck off the glass and up ice for John Tavares. Murray turned away from the chip shot in a move of self defense with Tavares and Burns skating past him. The puck clipped the top of the glass on the chip and fluttered over the glass. After a consultation by the officiating crew (which also included referee Eric Furlatt and rookie linesman Matt MacPherson) a delay of game penalty was assessed to Hamonic. It appeared obvious that referee Hasenfratz was unsure how the puck exited the playing surface due to his appropriate focus of attention on Burns and Tavares. I am unsure who actually made the call but the resulting explanation to Jack Capuano and assistant coach Doug Weight at the Islander bench was made by Murray. By virtue of the numerical strength in overtime and as a result of the Islander penalty the teams would play 4 against 3 with a faceoff to the left of DiPietro in the Islander zone. I understand that linesman Matt MacPherson is a real good kid and a fine young official. On the ensuing faceoff however, Matt committed a rookie mistake by ejecting the lone NY Islander forward, center man Frans Nielsen, who had been sent out by Capuano to take this crucial draw. Hall of Fame linesmen Matt Pavelich, John DAmico, Ray Scapinello or any veteran NHL linesman would tell the young man to give that lone forward every opportunity imaginable to take that faceoff and win it! Defenceman Steve Staios replaced Nielsen and was no match on the draw for a partially turned Joe Thornton who won the draw cleanly to the side wall giving the Sharks end zone possession. The puck never cleared the Islanders zone and Brent Burns snapped the puck past DiPietro for the power play winner. A couple of things need to be highlighted here. The first is the extremely difficult task the officials have to detect if the puck cleanly cleared the glass which can result in a delay of game penalty. While everyone in the Nassau Coliseum saw the replay and knew the puck had deflected off the top of the glass the officials didnt. At least one of them was convinced from his perspective that a penalty was deserved. For the sake of argument lets assume that it was one official that made the decision on this play. Depending on his level of “certainty” in selling the call I would want to make sure through dialogue that he was 110 percent sure there was no possibility the puck had been deflected prior to exiting the playing surface. Otherwise we just might have to eat the non-call at that point. This brings up an opportunity to revisit the coachs challenge that was proposed by Florida GM Dale Tallon. We all make mistakes and clearly this was one of those times. For those of you that watched the Eagles-Cowboys game on Sunday night you saw Philadelphia coach Andy Reid toss the red hanky on two occasions in that game. Upon further review by the referee both of Reids challenges revealed incorrect calls by the officiating crew that were appropriately reversed. If Jack Capuano had this option available to him the red pocket square from his suit jacket would have been tossed on this play. If the game officials had the opportunity to review that play through a coachs challenge I believe they would have welcomed the chance to change their initial, incorrect ruling on the ice. You notice I said the game officials/referee be given the opportunity to review the play. Just like coach Capuano said, “The game officials have a tough job.” To err is human, to forgive is divine. Jack Capuano deserves the “Alexander Pope Divinity Award” for his post game comments. A year ago, as newly appointed general manager Masai Ujiri bided his time and sat out of a lacklustre 2013 draft, this scenario seemed highly improbable. The Raptors, like every other team in the association, had at least one eye on this years rookie crop, one of the most highly touted and eagerly anticipated ever to enter the league.(Sports Network) – The Ottawa Senators decided last season that they wanted to upgrade their goaltending position. Now the man that they dealt away reappears in town as an All-Star. Brian Elliott makes his return to Scotiabank Place this evening as a member of the St. Louis Blues almost a year after the Sens shipped him out of town for their current goaltender. Elliott was a ninth-round pick by Ottawa in 2003 and appeared in 130 games with the club. He went 59-45-15 in that span with a 2.81 goals-against average and .903 save percentage, winning a career-high 29 games in 2009-10 with five shutouts. Elliott also went 1-2 in four playoff games that season. Ottawa dealt the 26-year-old to Colorado on Feb. 18 of last year for Craig Anderson and Elliott went 2-8-1 in 12 games before signing with the Blues this offseason to back up Jaroslav Halak. Elliott, though, has made 22 starts to Halaks 29 and was a participant in this seasons All-Star Game. Both Elliott and Halak are among the league leaders with five shutouts each, while the former leads the NHL with a 1.69 GAA and is second with a .938 save percentage. St. Louis head coach Ken Hitchcock is expected to give Elliott his first career start versus his former team tonight after going with Halak in the first two games following the All-Star break. Halak notched a 22-save shutout versus the Kings on Friday and was then dented for two goals on 36 shots in a 3-1 loss to Pekka Rinne and the Predators the following night. Rinne made 41 saves for Nashville and allowed just a goal by St. Louis Chris Porter. For the Blues, it was the third loss in four games and dropped them a point behind the Preds for second place in the Central Division. “Obviously, Rinne played extremely well and made some big saves, but I think the thing we seemed to do in stretches was to get away from our game and try to find some cute way of passing it around him and thats exactly what they want,” Blues forward Jamie Langenbrunner said. Halak fell to 12-2-3 in his past 17 starts, posting a 1.56 GAA and .940 save percentage in that span, and has four shutouts in his last eight starts. St. Louis, which is 9-0-2 versus the Eastern Conference this year, played without Jason Arnott due to a shoulder injury and lost the opener of a three- game swing. The Blues have lost seven of their past nine on the road and will look to win in Ottawa for the first time since Jan. 26, 2000. St. Louis has lost five straight as the guest in this series and snapped a five-game overall losing streak to Ottawa with a 5-2 home win last season. Elliott started that game for the Senators and allowed five goals on 33 shots. Anderson and the Sens will try to snap their season-high six-game slide this evening. The skid is the clubs longest since an 0-9-2 drought from Jan. 14- Feb. 9 of last year and has dropped it seven points behind Boston for first place in the Northeast Division. The Sens are also sitting eighth overall in the East, now one point back of the Maple Leafs and three ahead of the ninth- place Capitals. Ottawa lost ground to Toronto on Saturday with a 5-0 setback to the club. Anderson made 35 saves in his 17th straight start as the Senators were held to one goal or less for the fourth time on their skid. “This is definitely the worst loss. Its against a big rival for us, a team were battling with,” Senators center Jason Spezza said. “You hope this is the end of it.” Ottawa plays the third of a season-high five-game homestand tonight. Vancouver Canucks (32-15-5) at Nashville Predators (32-17-4), 8pm et/5pm pt (Sports Network) – There may not be a more confident goaltender in the league rigght now than Nashvilles Pekka Rinne.dddddddddddd Vancouver should have plenty of positive feelings heading into Tuesday night after the way it won its last game. The Predators look for their seventh victory in eight games and seventh in a row at home as they take on the Northwest Division-leading Canucks. Nashville has posted the best record in the league since Dec. 28, going 14-3-0 and outscoring its opponents 55-33 in that span. Saturdays 3-1 triumph over St. Louis put the Predators a point ahead of the Blues for second place in the Central Division and Nashville enters tonight four points behind front-running Detroit for the most in the NHL. Rinne has been a huge part of the Predators recent run. He made a season-high 42 saves versus the Blues to extend his franchise-record win streak to 11 straight games. He made 19 of those stops in the third and hasnt lost since Jan. 5, giving up more than two goals just once over his win streak. “I think the biggest thing is as a team were playing consistent and well defensively,” Rinne said of his win streak. “Confidence-wise, we have momentum going for us and weve been getting these one-goal games and a couple of huge comeback games. I think those kind of things just glue the whole team together and builds your confidence.” Rinne is just the fifth netminder since 1998-99 to post 11 straight victories in a season and he is 14-1-0 since Dec. 28 with a 1.72 goals-against average and .944 save percentage. Martin Erat scored a goal and assisted on tallies by Sergei Kostitsyn and Mike Fisher for the Predators. Erat and Fisher both have 16 points in their past 17 games, while Kostitsyn has 15 in that span. Vancouver comes in having won four of five while going 6-1-2 in its past nine, though it seemed like it was on its way to a regulation loss on Saturday in Colorado. The Canucks trailed by a goal late and the Avs T.J. Galiardi sent the puck towards Vancouvers open net looking to seal things up. However, Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa dove to prevent the puck from going in and then sent the game into overtime when he scored with 34.1 seconds to play. Mason Raymond then netted the lone goal of the shootout for an improbable 3-2 win. “I just tried to put my body in front of it because it was a rolling puck and the ice was obviously bad, so I didnt want to risk swinging at it with my stick,” said Bieksa. “Then once we got into their zone, Im not too sure what the puck hit, most likely a stanchion, but I just tried to put it on net because we had a pretty good screen in front.” Roberto Luongo made 44 saves for the Canucks, who own an 11-point lead in their division and trail the Red Wings by three in the overall NHL standings. Vancouver also moved to 4-11-5 when trailing after two periods this season. Ryan Kesler netted his 16th goal of the season for the Canucks, giving him four tallies and an assist over a five-game point streak as well as goals in three straight. The Canucks and Predators have split a pair of meetings so far this year, with both taking place in Vancouver. The two teams have combined for 17 goals in those encounters, though the Canucks Daniel Sedin and Fisher are the only two skaters with multiple goals. Sedin has five points in the two games and twin Henrik has four off a goal and three assists, while Colin Wilson is pacing the Preds with a goal and three helpers in the two meetings. The Canucks have won six of their past eight during the regular season in Nashville, where the clubs are meeting for the first time since last seasons Western Conference semifinals that Vancouver won in six games. VANCOUVER — The Montreal Canadiens traded defenceman Raphael Diaz to the Vancouver Canucks on Monday in exchange for forward Dale Weise. The 28-year-old Diaz had 11 assists and 12 penalty minutes in 46 games for the Canadiens this season. The native of Baar, Switzerland, has 41 points (four goals, 37 assists) and 48 penalty minutes in 128 NHL career games but was a healthy scratch of late with Montreal. “This is the business. This is the way it is,” Diaz said Monday on a conference call. “As a player you want to play as much as you can and you want to help you team.” Diaz joins a Canucks blue-line that has suffered a number of injuries in recent weeks, with both Christopher Tanev and Kevin Bieksa currently out of the lineup. “As a sportsman, as a hockey player, you respect everything (teams) do,” he said. "(The Canadiens) always treated me good. They helped me learn a lot things to play in the NHL. “Im really excited for the new opportunity.” Meanwhile, Weise never seemed to fit into the plans of Canucks head coach John Tortorella. The Winnipeg native had three goals, nine assists and 42 penalty minutes in 44 games this season, mostly while playing on the fourth line. “I think I can bring a physical presence to the (Canadiens),” said Weise. "Im a good skater and I work hard and my success is down low and hanging onto pucks and being physical and trying to get to the hard areas to score goals. “Im not sure where Im going to fit in just yet. Im just looking forward to coming in and trying to play hard and trying to find a spot.” In 162 career NHL games, the 25-year-old has 10 goals, 16 assists and 185 penalty minutes. Weises name had been mentioned in trade speculation in recent weeks, but Mondays deal still caught him off guard. “(The trade) comes as a little bit of a shock to me,” said Weise. "I think any time you hear rumours around you think about it but theres so many (rumours) that go around and you just never know. “I didnt put too much thought into it … I was shocked when I heard about it today.” Weise was expected to arrive in Montreal on Monday night and practise with the Canadiens on Tuesday morning, while Diaz was set to meet up with his new teammates the same day in Boston. Both Weise and Diaz will get a chance to face their old teams this week when the Canadiens host the Canucks on Thursday night at the Bell Centre. Wolf pitched five strong innings for his first big league win in his first start in the majors, David Murphy and Adrian Beltre homered in a three-run first inning, and the Rangers avoided a sweep with a 3-1 victory against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.MILAN, Italy — Fernando Llorente scored a stoppage-time winner to help Juventus snatch a 1-0 win over Udinese and stretch its lead at the top of the Italian league to three points after Roma drew 1-1 at Atalanta. Roma also needed a late goal as Kevin Strootman scored in the final minute to preserve the teams unbeaten record. Mario Balotellis free kick helped AC Milan beat Catania 3-1 for its first win in six league matches, while a last-minute equalizer saw Sampdoria earn a 1-1 draw at Inter Milan, in front of new Nerazzurri President Erick Thohir. Elsewhere, Cagliari came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Sassuolo and Chievo Verona beat Livorno 3-0. Juventus dominated possession, but it was Udinese which had the best opportunities and home goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon pulled off a three stunning saves to deny Antonio di Natale twice and Andrea Lazzari once. Defender Stephan Lichtsteiner returned after almost two months out with an injury and he was instrumental in the Juventus goal flicking on a cross for Llorente to head past the motionless Zeljko Brkic. Llorente had almost scored moments earlier but saw his header cleared off the line by Udinese defender Allan. Kickoff had been brought forward to allow more than 12,000 children to fill the stands behind each goal, replacing the ultras which had been banned for insulting territorial chants against Napoli. It was Juves sixth successive league victory without conceding a goal. “We have to continue like this,” Juventus coach Antonio Conte said. "We have 12 wins, a draw and a defeat. Thats very important but we mustnt sit back on our successes. “We were good today and lucky. We played well and showed that we are doing well physically, despite playing three games in a week. Buffon was good today, but Brkick was exceptional.” Key playmaker Andrea Pirlo limped off after 13 minutes with a knee injury. Earlier, Roma was held to its fourth successive draw. Atalanta, which had hit the post in the first half, took the lead seven minutes after halftime when Davide Brivio sent a free kick under the wall and into the bottom right corner, although Roma goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis was partly at fault as he misjudged the ball. United States forward Michael Bradley thought he had levelled in the 76th but his header was harshly ruled out for offside. Atalanta goalkeeper Andrea Consigli made several good saves, but could do nothing when Adem Ljajic crossed for Kevin Strootman to tap in from six yards. There was also a last-gasp leveler at San SSiro, where Thohir was watching his first match since being elected president last month.dddddddddddd Inter captain Javier Zanetti made his first start since snapping his Achilles tendon in April. Inter took the lead in the 18th when Ricardo Alvarez worked his way through on the left of the area before rolling across for Fredy Guarin to lash in under the bar. Guarin almost doubled his tally seven minutes after the interval but his effort crashed off the post. Shortly afterwards Sampdoria striker Nicola Pozzis effort was ruled out for offside. Substitute Renan levelled in the final minute, with a powerful shot from distance, just three minutes after coming off the bench. “This was our worst performance of the season,” Inter coach Walter Mazzarri said. "We went too deep after going 1-0 up and we didnt even start well. Too many were under par and Sampdoria deserved the draw. “I didnt like this Inter. We should never let our guard down.” In the lunchtime kickoff, Milan dominated possession but it was Catania that took the lead in the 13th against the run of play as poor defending eventually saw Lucas Castros effort deflected over stand-in goalkeeper Gabriel. The visitors levelled six minutes later when Riccardo Montolivo volleyed Urby Emanuelsons cross into the back of the net. Balotelli had gone six matches in all competitions without a goal before Tuesdays 3-0 win at Celtic, but he was involved in most Milan moves and fired his side in front shortly after the hour mark with a low free kick. Moments later Catania were down to 10 men when Panagiotis Tachtsidis was harshly shown a straight red for a challenge on Balotelli. Kaka sealed the match nine minutes from time, bursting into the box and firing into the roof of the net from a tight angle to score for the third successive match. It was his 99th Milan goal. Milan moved provisionally level with eighth-placed Lazio. Catania remains at the bottom of the league. There was another positive for Milan as Stephan El Shaarawy made his return from injury, coming on in the 74th for his first appearance in three months. Balotelli was replaced seven minutes from time after getting into a heated argument with Catania defender Nicolas Spolli, whom he accused of racism. “I didnt hear anything, so I cant judge,” Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “I took Mario off only because I saw he was a bit tired and had taken some knocks. There are so many skirmishes on the pitch, in any match, whats important is to stay calm.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

SALT LAKE CITY — Tyrone Corbin oversaw Utahs transition from Jerry Sloan and Deron Williams to a youth movement, one he wont get to see to fruition. The Jazz are in the market for a new coach after deciding not to offer Corbin a new contract Monday. Corbin went 112-146 in three-plus seasons in Salt Lake City. He took over on Feb. 10, 2011, following the resignation of Sloan, for whom he played three seasons and served as a longtime assistant. Corbin reached the playoffs in the strike-shortened 2011-12 season, but his team was swept by San Antonio in the first round of the playoffs. The Jazz went 43-39 the next season and dumped a number of veterans. This year, they went 25-57, the worst season by the Jazz since 1979-80, when Utah was 24-58 following the franchises relocation from New Orleans. Still, it wasnt easy to cut ties with a classy man who steered the franchise through the difficult stretch and whos worked for the organization for more than a dozen years. “Tys a man of dignity, class, integrity and well do nothing now in this press conference or moving forward that will disparage him or his coaches in any way,” Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey said. “Today, were grateful for a period that they saw us through and following coach Sloan in many ways … is like following John Wooden.” Lindsey said he doesnt have a short list of preferred coaching candidates nor does he have a deadline for hiring Corbins replacement. Corbin was the seventh coach in franchise history. He served as an assistant under Sloan from 2004-11. He also played for nine teams during a 16-year NBA career, including three seasons with the Jazz from 1991-94. Lindsey left open the possibility of Corbin returning to the organization in some capacity. “I dont want to speak for Ty and understand his range of emotions, from disappointment to anger to everything in between, but (hes) a good man who was a very good player, very good assistant that led us well through a tough three-plus years where there was significant change of personnel,” Lindsey said. "So, I wouldnt rule anything out, just because hes that high of character. “And Ill say this, as well: I think Ty is … going to be a better coach or is potentially going to be a better head coach for his experience, and it wouldnt surprise me at all to see him land on his feet to be a head coach and to do very well going forward. If that doesnt happen and he were to want to come back in some fashion, I dont think theres anybody within the organization that would prevent that.” Owner and CEO Greg Miller said in a statement that Corbin “has always represented the Jazz franchise in a first-class manner both on the court and in the community. He did a wonderful job of building relationships with the players and encouraged their growth throughout the season.” After jettisoning veteran salaries last summer, the Jazz started 1-14 amid injury woes, but improved as the season progressed. Rookie point guard Trey Burke started the season on the bench with a broken finger, pressed through a shooting slump and ended with a season-high 32 points in the final game. He averaged 12.8 points and 5.7 assists. Despite the losses, the team never splintered. Players pointed to Corbins positivity and the veteran influence of Marvin Williams and Richard Jefferson, who resurrected his career, shooting 41 per cent from 3-point range and scoring 10.1 points after rarely playing at Golden State last year. A lottery pick, another first-round choice and sizeable salary cap flexibility will benefit the Jazz and Corbins successor this off-season. And theres plenty of promise in Enes Kanter, Derrick Favours and Alec Burks. The two big men improved in all statistical areas. Burks became a go-to scorer and ended up as the second-leading scorer despite playing as a reserve most of the season. . Bjoerndalen, who had failed to win any major race for two years before Sochi, writes in a Facebook entry that he is “full of energy and inspiration” after winning the 10-kilometre sprint and mixed relay at last months Olympics. After months of lengthy debate from hockey fans across the country, Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subbans status for Sochi is no longer up in the air. Hes officially a member of the 2014 Canadian mens Olympic hockey team – and no one is happier than Montreals No. 76. “Obviously I was very happy (to receive the phone call) and my family was as well,” he told reporters after Tuesdays announcement. Subban, 24, captured the Norris Trophy last season as the NHLs best defenceman after posting 11 goals and 27 assists in 42 games during the lockout-shortened campaign. But the Habs top blueliner has maintained that he wouldnt stand still as he tried to make a lasting impression with Hockey Canada. “I try not to be complacent, get better every day and do my job to help my team win,” said Subban. “Im just grateful to have the opportunity to play with the best players in the world, play against them and learn from them.” The Toronto native has a solid international resume, having captured back-to-back gold medals at the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Championship, including a berth in the tournament All-Star Team in his second stint with three goals and nine points. Hes also no stranger to playing on the larger ice surface that will be utilized in Sochi. “I played on an Olympic-sized rink in junior for four years with Belleville,” he explained. “It changes the game a little bit in terms of how much space and time you have out there.” And Subban has shown no signs of slowing down from last years career campaign, leading the Canadiens in scoring with sevven goals and 26 assists in 44 games this season.dddddddddddd “His greatest strengths are his shot and his puck handling,” said Steve Yzerman, executive director of Team Canada. “Hes the right fit for that spot right now.” That assessment was echoed by Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien, whos been pleased with the improvements Subban made to earn the selection. “He made progress over the last two years,” he said Tuesday. “We wanted to make sure he was a good all-around player and he puts in effort. All the credit goes to him.” Subban is one of four players named to Team Canada that is currently playing for a Canadian NHL team, joining teammate Carey Price as well as Dan Hamhuis and Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks. And the young blueliner is looking forward to sharing the Olympic experience with Price – a long-time friend on and off the ice. “Myself and Carey, weve had the opportunity to play together for a couple years now and to represent our country is great,” said Subban. “I hope I get to room with him so I can snore and keep him up all night.” Another teammate Subban plans to chat with is defenceman Andrei Markov, who was named to the Russias team at the same time. Provided of course, he can get Markov to respond. “Hes not talking very much right now, maybe hes already in Olympic mode,” joked Subban. “Ive spoken to him many times about Sochi and he thinks its going to be a great experience. Ill definitely pick his brain on a couple things.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The usually even-tempered Champ Bailey admonished his team after an aggravating performance against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. His rebuke was out of frustration and maybe a twinge of fear. After all, Bailey certainly doesnt want to experience yet another late-season collapse. The Denver Broncos are not only chasing their first playoff spot in six seasons, but also fighting recent history. For the third time in four years, the team has taken an 8-5 record into the final three weeks of the season. Twice before, the Broncos failed to make the post-season. In 2008, the flop cost Mike Shanahan his job. And in 2009, it rendered then-coach Josh McDaniels team a footnote in NFL history — one of just a handful of squads to start 6-0 and fail to make the playoffs. Now, the Broncos (8-6) are trying to avoid another December nosedive after a 41-23 loss to the Patriots on Sunday. Theyre just a game up on the Oakland Raiders and the suddenly surging San Diego Chargers in the AFC West. Theres little margin for error anymore. Thats why Bailey, whos been around for both downfalls, exhorted his team after Brady carved up a patchwork secondary that was missing the leadership of Brian Dawkins. “We need to concentrate on getting better. We showed today that were not ready to go to the playoffs and make a push,” Bailey said Sunday. "Weve got to get better and we only have two or three weeks to do it. “If we dont, then well be sitting home in the playoffs.” The task ahead wont be easy for the Broncos as they travel to Buffalo on short rest before closing out the season against the Kansas City Chiefs and Kyle Orton, whos eager to keep his former team from the playoffs after they benched him in favour of Tim Tebow and then released him. “We have to play a whole lot better if we want to win,” said cornerback Andre Goodman, who was back in the lineup Sunday after suffering a concussion the week before. “We havent played our best football yet, but I think we feel good about the position were in, in terms of the division race and right now thats the only thing we can focus on.” Denver has been in this position before, only to fall short when a playoff spot looked almost certain. Under Shanahan in 2008, the Broncos were outscored 112-54 over the final three weeks to finish at 8-8 and miss the post-season. Soon after, Shanahan was fired. In came McDaniels, who had the team off to a sensational start. Only they couldnt sustain the momentum, losing their last four games to become just the third team since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger to go unbeaten through six games and miss the playoffs, joining the 78 Redskins and the 03 Vikings. However, this version of the Broncos isnt paying any attention to the past. “At the end of the day, dont give up, and just go out there and continue to believe,” linebacker Wesley Woodyard recently said. “Thats something that we have this year. We believe in each other.” After an impressive six-week winning streak that included four fourth-quarter comebacks, the Broncos fell apart Sunday, exposing weaknesses that hadnt shown up since October. — They were a solid ball control offence, turning it over just five times in six games. But they coughed up the ball three times in the second quarter, leading to 13 New England points and costing them the chance to keep up with the prolific Patriots. — Their defence, so reliable this season, was shredded by Brady & Co., giving up 451 total yards. — Their special teams faltered as returner Quan Cosby had a critical mistake just before halftime, muffing a punt and setting up a 21-yard field goal by New England. The usually sure-handed Lonie Paxton also had a bad snap on a botched extra point. “Its very frustrating. But at the end of the day, its just one game,” Goodman said. “I think thats what we have to take out of it. Its one game and were still in a good position in terms of the division race, and were just going to have to learn from this, but be able to move on quickly from an emotional standpoint.” Overshadowed by the breakdowns and mistakes was this: Tebow turned in one of his finest games. He was solid and steady all afternoon, even staking the team to a quick 16-7 lead. Scoring early has been the Broncos Achilles heel lately. Then, the turnovers hit. Lance Ball fumbled. Tebow fumbled. Cosby couldnt hold onto a punt he never should have tried to catch. As is his nature, Tebow kept a rosy outlook after the game. “I definitely feel like were all right,” said Tebow, who ran for 93 yards and threw for another 194. “Were excited about where were at, and were going to continue to be positive and stay motivated and just try to improve.” With Dawkins out because of a neck injury, the Broncos had to rely on rookies Quinton Carter and Rahim Moore. That simply opened the door for Brady, who exploited the secondary as he threw for 320 yards and two scores. “Mentally, we just didnt play smart enough to win,” Carter said. “Got to play smarter. Cant make those mistakes.” Notes: Broncos coach John Fox said Monday there was no update on RB Willis McGahee, who was hampered by a left leg injury against the Patriots. … Asked if Cosby was still his returner, Fox said: “Yeah. I havent seen him since the game.” . The two were going for a loose puck.Newcastle manager Alan Pardew head-butted a player in an English Premier League game against Hull on Saturday, leading to a swift formal warning and 100,000-pound ($168,000) fine from his club, and facing the prospect of a lengthy touchline ban. The touchline confrontation unfolded in the 72nd minute when Hull midfielder David Meyler barged into Pardew as he looked to retrieve the ball for a throw-in at KC Stadium. After squaring up to Meyler before moving his head in the direction of the players face, Pardew was sent to the stands. FA chairman Greg Dyke described Pardews actions as “serious” after Newcastles 4-1 win, and said an investigation would be opened. Pardews employers reacted quickly, holding urgent talks with the manager and announcing his punishment hours later. “His behaviour was unacceptable and is not the behaviour we expect from the manager of Newcastle United,” the northeast club said on its website. Pardew, whose job does not appear to be under immediate threat, accepted the formal warning and fine, Newcastle said. “Alan unreservedly apologized immediately following the game to the player, to Hull City Football Club and its fans, and to the fans of Newcastle United,” the club statement said. "We have held discussions this evening with Alan, who has offeered his sincere apologies to the club and it is clear he deeply regrets his actions.ddddddddddddquot; Although Pardew denied head-butting Meyler, he conceded the incident was “a wake-up call,” coming after a recent touchline altercation with Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini. “(Meyler) was right on top of me and I wanted to just ease him away from me but obviously I put my head in a forward motion,” Pardew said after the game. "I want to apologize to him, everyone at Hull and obviously my own fans as well. I dont think it was a head-butt. It wasnt a motion that was quick. “Sometimes when youre on the sideline like that you can get involved in a moment like that. It was an incident that just flared up all around me. I just wanted to get him away.” Pardew said he would “accept whatever comes my way” as a punishment, and he was likely to be prevented from sitting on the bench for several games by the FA. Newcastles statement expressed disappointment that Pardews behaviour took the focus off such a fine attacking performance against Hull. Newcastle was already leading 3-1 at the time of the incident after Moussa Sissoko scored twice on either side of Loic Remys goal. With Pardew in the stands, Vurnon Anita added the fourth in stoppage time. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – O.J. Simpsons lawyers submitted a supersized appeal to the Nevada Supreme Court, seeking the former football stars release from prison and a new trial in his 2007 Las Vegas armed-robbery case. The lawyers met a midnight Wednesday deadline to submit a request for the court to review Simpsons claim that 2008 trial in Las Vegas was tainted by his fame and notoriety following his 1995 acquittal in Los Angeles in the deaths of his ex-wife and her friend. However, the document totalled 19,993 words, court spokesman Michael Sommermeyer said Thursday. That was some 43 per cent longer than the 14,000-word limit the court had set. It will be up to the seven justices to decide whether to accept it for filing and consideration. Until that time, the document hasnt been made public. The court hasnt decided whether to hear oral arguments. Simpson, 66, is serving nine to 33 years in a northern Nevada prison after being found guilty of leading a group of armed men in a September 2007 confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers at a Las Vegas casino hotel. He was convicted of kidnapping, armed robbery and other charges. Hes not eligible for parole until late 2017. The appeal stems from arguments rejected last year by Clark County District Judge Linda Marie Bell that Simpsons trial attorney botched Simpsons trial and first appeal to the state Supreme Court, the only appeals court in Nevada. Simpson attorney Patricia Palm said the appeal ran long because she and attorneys Ozzie Fumo and Tom Pitaro were responding in detail to the judges Nov. 26 ruling, which totalled 101 pages. Palm said the state high court routinely accepts oversized filings in complex cases. She also submitted 36 appendices to the appeal brief. Bells ruling came after she held five days of hearings in Las Vegas on a 94-page petition that Palm filed in May 2012 seeking a new trial on 22 possible grounds. The judge said she reviewed the entire Simpson court record and determined that evidence was overwhelming that Simpson orchestrated the armed kidnapping and robbery, and that Simpsons current attorneys failed to demonstrate how his former lawyers actions changed the outcome of the case. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said he was confident that Bells ruling would be upheld. Wolfsons wife, former Clark County District Judge Jackie Glass, presided over Simpsons 2008 trial and sentencing. Simpson claimed he was trying to retrieve from the memorabilia dealers items that had been stolen from him after his Los Angeles trial and a 1997 civil court a wrongful-death judgment that put him on the hook for $33.5 million to the estates of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. The NFL hall of famer testified last year that he thought he had a right to get his own belongings back, and he never knew any of the men with him were carrying guns. ___ Find Ken Ritter on Twitter: http://twitter.com/krttr . — Garret Sparks made 31 saves as the Toronto Marlies beat the Grand Rapids Griffins 3-1 in American Hockey League play Tuesday. San Jose (2-3-4) stretched its unbeaten streak at home to three matches despite losing winger Shea Salinas to a straight red card after a studs-up tackle on Dallas defender Zach Loyd just before halftime. FC Dallas (5-5-1) slid to its fourth straight loss despite a stinging 20-yard free-kick goal by Michel in the 76th minute. Cato burst in behind the Dallas defence to give San Jose a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, set free by a long pass forward by goalkeepeer Jon Busch and a redirecting header from centre back Clarence Goodson.dddddddddddd It was the first career assist for Busch, a 14-year MLS veteran. San Jose doubled its lead off an own goal by Dallas substitute David Texeira in the 73rd minute, providing enough of a cushion to withstand Michels strike. The Earthquakes held on in the second half. Victor Ulloa banged a shot off the post in the 57th minute, and Busch scrambled across his goalmouth to deliver a body block on Blas Perezs rebound try. Matt Hedges, Fabian Castillo and rookie Tesho Akindele all missed wide for Dallas in the final 11 minutes of regulation. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

PHILADELPHIA — Trade talk mostly fizzled at the NHL draft. “It just seemed to me there were a lot of phone calls, a lot of talking, people interested, but nothing really happened,” Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray said. Aside from Ryan Kesler getting dealt before proceedings got underway and then James Neal a few hours later, the weekend passed without much major action. One small trade — the Calgary Flames getting Brandon Bollig from the Chicago Blackhawks for a third-round pick - looked like a preview of many more to come as cap-strapped teams try to get under the US$69 million ceiling set for next season. “Its a puzzle to put together and try to make all the numbers work,” Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said Saturday. “Thats clearly the biggest factor youre faced with when you have salary cap being what it is. Youre going to have some tough decisions. Were not the only team thats in that position. There will be other teams that face the same things.” Without naming names, Bowman was describing the plight of the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers, along with his Blackhawks, who almost certainly have to make sacrifices just to be cap-compliant. In the Bruins case, it might mean saying goodbye to Jarome Iginla, a 61-point player and a major piece of their Presidents Trophy-winning season. “If we cant sign Jarome, were going to find a good player at that position,” Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said Friday night. “We feel all our young guys and our current players are going to get better.” Its unclear what else the Bruins might have to do with forwards Reilly Smith, Jordan Caron and Justin Florek and defenceman Torrey Krug and Matt Bartkowski needing new deals as restricted free agents. According to CapGeek, Boston has just over $1.6 million to spend. The Flyers, technically over the cap by a couple hundred thousand dollars, have some room with defenceman Chris Pronger bound for long-term injured reserve. But theyre still reportedly shopping Vincent Lecavalier to rid themselves of at least part of his $4.5 million cap hit for the next four seasons. Chicago managed to part with Bolligs $1.25-million cap hit but might have to clear more salary to fill out the roster. Enter the likes of the Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Buffalo Sabres, teams with salary-cap space to take on salary. Oilers GM Craig MacTavish knows players wont be given away, but talent should be available. “Were in a pretty enviable position to be able to take on some of those contracts,” MacTavish said Friday night. “Those are really the style of deals that weve looked to make over the last little while where we give up a few assets, take the contract and the cap space, so well be trying to do some of that.” That was part of what went into the Flames trading for Bollig, who just signed a contract extension in March. When the cap was set at $69 million, it was at least $1 million, if not more, less than GMs were hoping for. “Weve been looking at situations with the cap where people that may have difficulty or be in a situation where they had to move money,” Flames GM Brad Treliving said. Sabres GM Tim Murray implied that hed be willing to accept expensive contracts, but only if he gets an asset like a draft pick in return. “I tried to make a big trade today, a unique trade,” Murray said Saturday. “I said, We got to do like the NBA. So I went to a team and said, You trade me your first pick from yesterday. He didnt want to be the first guy to do that. So Im not sure I did, either. But I thought it was a good idea.” There could be a market for those NBA-style deals if GMs determine the cap space gained is worth it. More likely, teams up against the $69 million limit will be getting partial value on current players to clear room to manoeuvre when unrestricted free agency opens Tuesday. Plenty of money will get handed out then, and the teams that dont have the space to do it will be forced to rely on younger players to fill the void. Bowman, who has gone through this during two Stanley Cup runs, called it just the continuation of the development cycle. “Its a constant process of finding guys who will be able to fill those roles,” he said. “Its a never-ending game. Thats the state of the game today. But you have to find players, whether theyre free agents or like today draft picks and work with making it to the point where they can be NHL contributors.” . 1. NEW YORK — Henrik Lundqvist already knows the joy of getting a lucrative contract extension. Who knew that one week later, a win at Madison Square Garden would bring the star goalie pure jubilation. When Lundqvist turned aside Mikael Backlund in the seventh round of the shootout Sunday night, he and the rest of the New York Rangers had a long-awaited 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames and an end to a four-game losing streak, all at home. Lundqvist, who stopped 18 shots through overtime, spread his arms and looked up to the ceiling as his teammates raced from the bench to meet him at the end of the 0-3-1 skid. “It was just a big relief to get two points,” said Lundqvist, who earned just his second win since agreeing to a seven-year contract extension. “I had a chance to close it out twice and I didnt do it. Finally we ended the game.” Benoit Pouliot scored the fourth goal of the Rangers first shootout of the season to give them their first win on a team-record, nine-game homestand. “I just had a feeling that if we dont win this one, Im not going to be a happy guy,” Lundqvist said. "Its a big win for us. Right now, you have to look at it as taking baby steps in improving and start winning. You cant turn this around right away. “You start with one period, then two periods, then a game. Then you start feeling good about yourself.” Derek Stepan and Carl Hagelin scored to erase the Rangers early 2-0 deficit, and Chris Kreider made it 3-3 with 7:53 left in regulation as New York improved to 2-15 in games in which it allowed the first goal. “Thats a picture weve seen,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said about the early deficit. "We stuck with playing a pretty solid defensive game. We werent giving them much, and we spent a lot of time in their end. “We got a couple of goals and just kept plugging away.” Rookie centre Sean Monahan gave Calgary a 3-2 lead at 4:44 of the third but the Flames couldnt stretch their winning streak to three. The 19-year-old Monahan chipped a shot from in close off a feed from behind the net from Curtis Glencross for his 10th goal and third in his last seven games. He missed seven games because of a broken foot, and returned to the lineup Saturday for the Flames win at Buffalo. Backlund and Glencross scored in the first period, Jiri Hudler had two assists, and Karri Ramo made 29 saves through overtime.dddddddddddd “It was a big battle all night,” Ramo said. "Not happy about the goals I allowed. Sometimes you just have to take the point and move on. “We played good enough to win. They were a desperate team.” The clubs played a frantic final few minutes of regulation when the Rangers were given power plays 40 seconds apart after Mike Cammalleri was sent off for roughing, and Ramo was called for delay of game when he whacked a rebound out of play. That advantage was short-circuited right when Cammalleris penalty ended when Kreider was given four minutes for high-sticking Chris Butler. The Rangers got it to overtime, with Calgary still having 2:04 left on its power play. “Thought wed get it done in overtime, but we couldnt execute on the power play,” Flames captain Mark Giordano said. "Were not happy with the point. It should have been two. “If you get a power play in overtime, you should win.” The Flames had won their first two since general manager Jay Feaster and assistant GM John Weisbrod were fired Thursday. New York tied it at 2 at 7:29 of the second on Hagelins sixth goal. Hagelin got to a rebound, swung around the net and stuffed a shot inside the right post. The Rangers again had a rough first period, but it was actually a better start than in their previous game — holding the Flames to two goals. The Rangers trailed Columbus 3-0 in the opening frame on Thursday, and Lundqvist was chased from the net 11:10 into the 3-2 loss. Calgary got the quick jump when Backlund scored at 7:28, just five seconds into a power play after Kreider was sent off for interference. Backlund won a faceoff in the left circle and moved into the slot, where he deftly tipped in Hudlers shot for his fourth goal. The Flames made it 2-0 with 5:00 left in the period. Hudler weaved his way in close and made a short backhanded pass to Glencross, who used his own backhand to beat Lundqvist for his sixth goal. The announcement of Glencross goal was only halfway finished when Stepan brought a roar from the crowd with his sixth of the season 25 seconds later. It was Stepans first goal in 11 games. NOTES: Stepan earned his 100th NHL assist on Kreiders goal. … Giordano played in his 400th NHL game. … Calgarys previous four games were decided by 2-1 scores. … The Rangers used seven defencemen and only 11 forwards in their lineup. LONDON — Grigor Dimitrov saved a match point to defeat Spanish left-hander Feliciano Lopez 6-7 (8), 7-6 (1), 7-6 (6) Sunday and win the grass court tournament at Queens Club, a warm-up event for Wimbledon. The fourth-seeded Dimitrov is the first Bulgarian to lift the title, and also the first player this year to win titles on three different surfaces after claiming victories in Acapulco on hardcourt and Bucharest on clay. At age 32, 10th-seeded Lopez was attempting to become the oldest winner of the tournament since 33-year old Tony Roche defeated John McEnroe in the 1978 final, and to win his first title since Eastbourne one year ago. “Of course, Im really happy with the win,” said Dimitrov. "Obviously I knew what I had to do today out on the court, and Feli is one of those competitors that when it comes to fast surfaces, hes always very tricky to play. “Down match point in the second set wasnt the coolest thing, but, you know, I just fought hard. I just left everything out on the court.” In a match that featured few rallies and even fewer break point opportunities, Dimitrov dropped only four points on serve in the first set but failed to convert two break points to lead 4-2. Lopez went on to claim the tiebreaker on his fourth set point and games went comfortably with serve in the second set until the Spaniard held a match point on his opponents serve at 6-5. Dimitrov survived that crisis and then swept the tiebreaker for the loss of just one point, but a forehand volley by Lopez gave the Spaniard a break in the opening game of the final set. The Bulgarian got back on level terms at 4-4 when Lopez double-faulted, and claimed the tiebreaker on his second match point when Lopez netted a forehand. “I think when you face players like Grigor, you know that even playing the way I played today there is a chance to lose because hes a great player,” said Lopez. "He never gives up, as he showed today. “Its tough to lose when you play such a great match, but you have to take it the other way, no? Overall it was a great week for me. It has been a great preparation for Wimbledon, and hopefully in Eastbourne next week I can do well again.” Dimitrovs girlfriend, French Open champion Maria Sharapova, was among the spectators at Queens. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — For months now, the battered country of Japan has been looking for a lift. By using her blossoming golf game as a tool for charity, 21-year-old Mika Miyazato could turn the U.S. Womens Open into the feel-good story her country seeks — and back it with some cold, hard cash. Miyazato shot 67 to grab the lead at 5-under-par 137 at the halfway point at the Broadmoor on Saturday, where rain once again stopped play early and brought up the prospect of a grueling, 36-hole Sunday. She had a one-shot lead over Ai Miyazato — who is not related but is from the same city, Okinawa. When the Miyazatos return to the course, they will play in the final group together, each wearing red and white pins they created to raise awareness for the thousands of victims in a country ravaged by an earthquake, tsunami and the resulting nuclear catastrophe. The pins have Japanese characters that translate to “Never Give Up Japan.” For Mika, it goes beyond mere symbols, though. She is donating all her winnings from the 2011 majors to the Red Cross for the recovery cause in her home country. That has already totalled more than US$100,000 thanks to top-10 finishes at the first two majors. First place at the U.S. Open is worth around $600,000. “Winning majors is what I strive for,” she said. “And to donate all of my earnings from the majors, I hope to give positive things to the people who are around the disaster area.” What a way to make a name for herself — even though Mika has spent most of her young career being confused with Ai Miyazato. Ai has six LPGA Tour victories to none for Mika and she has spent a longer time on the radar as the best hope to become the next golf superstar in a country that loves the game. Not that Mika has complained much when people get them mixed up. “Everybody thinks were sisters,” she said. “That way, everybody can remember me, because Ai is playing great.” For the final 36 holes, the Miyazatos will also be grouped with South Koreas I.K. Kim, who returned early Saturday with the lead, played the last four holes of her second round, then finished the day two shots behind — in third place at 3 under. In an attempt to bring a Sunday conclusion to a tournament that has fallen behind after three straight afternoons of rain, the USGA will send threesomes off from the 1 and 10 tees Sunday and will not re-pair the groups after the third roound.ddddddddddddIt brings up the prospect, however slight, of having a victory celebration on the ninth green. Almost certain, though, is that the final 36 holes will be as much a test of endurance as shot-making. Play is set to resume at 6:45 a.m. local time and if there are no interruptions, tournament director Ben Kimbal said the last putt will drop at 7:07 p.m. “Oh, the USGA makes it really tough for all of us,” said Kim, who has been passing the considerable down time playing games she loaded onto her new iPad. “Its already tough out there. But weather, I mean, you cant really control it. Youve really got to play with what we get.” The only other players to reach the halfway point under par were Stacy Lewis and Ryann OToole, both at 1 under. Lewis led for much of the second round before making bogey and double-bogey in the hour after play resumed following a rain delay Friday evening. She played the last two holes of the second round Saturday morning and finished with a 73. “I felt awful last night,” said Lewis, who won the years first major, the Nabisco. “I didnt feel much better when I woke up. It was just really tiring to me. Ive played 36 holes before, but not on a golf course like this.” Sue Kim from Langley, B.C., was at even par after 2 holes when play was stopped and is tied for 34th at 5 over. Defending champion Paula Creamer was in a six-way tie at even. “Youre either above it and move on and you just kind of accept that this is what it is,” Creamer said, “or you dwell about it and let it get to you, and affect your game out there.” Four-time major winner Yani Tseng, trying to complete the career Grand Slam, was 4 over, nine shots out of the lead. After finishing her frustrating round Saturday morning, she said she was having more trouble dealing with the Broadmoors hard-to-read greens than the weather. But make no mistake. The East Course is taking a hunk out of these players. Its a 7,000-yard monster at 6,400 feet in elevation — a long walk on a normal day, let alone a multiple-round grind under major-championship conditions. Rounds averaged about 5 1/2 hours Saturday. “You come to this Open, you have to really prepare,” said Se Ri Pak, who will start the third round at 2 over. “Mentally stronger, physically stronger, your game has to always be strong enough to make sure you stay the whole week.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’
