LeBron James return to the court in Cleveland looks like it could be against the defending champs. According to the Boston Globes Gary Washburn: “Rumor has it that the NBAs season-opening game on TNT will be San Antonio at Cleveland.” The NBA schedule is expected to be released in August. A LeBron-Spurs match-up would keep with recent Opening Day trends in the NBA with having the defending champions tip-off against marquee competition. The Miami Heat have played the season opener the past two seasons, hosting the Boston Celtics in 2012-13 and the Chicago Bulls last season. MILWAUKEE — With Prince Fielder all but gone and Ryan Braun facing a possible 50-game suspension, the Milwaukee Brewers needed another source of offence. The Brewers finalized a US$36 million, three-year contract with free agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez on Wednesday, adding a much-needed bat to their lineup. Ramirez, who played the past eight-plus seasons for the NL Central rival Chicago Cubs, said he considers the Brewers a team that will be in position contend every year for the foreseeable future - even if they do lose Braun for a chunk of next season and lose Fielder for good. “Youre going to miss those guys if Ryan Braun is suspended, but I think you win with pitching,” Ramirez said. And while Ramirez said hell do his best to help produce runs, he doesnt see himself as a direct replacement for Fielder. “You cant replace Prince Fielder,” Ramirez said. “Hes one of the best hitters in the game.” Brewers general manager Doug Melvin acknowledged that Wednesdays signing of Ramirez more or less means that theyre moving on from Fielder, who is almost sure to sign elsewhere. “It appears, obviously, that Prince Fielder will probably not be coming back at this time,” Melvin said. “So we had to move forward.” Braun, the NL MVP, is appealing a positive test for a banned substance. “Theres a lot of uncertainty, but were moving forward with him being a part of our ballclub,” Melvin said. Melvin said the team wasnt going to change its off-season plans to compensate for the potential loss of Braun. “Were just doing business as usual,” Melvin said. The 33-year-old Ramirez played 149 games for the Cubs last year, batting .306 with 26 home runs and 93 RBIs. “Hes got some pretty impressive credentials,” Melvin said. “I know when we always played them, hes the one guy that I always feared coming up there in key situations, with men on base.” Ramirez has been with the Cubs since he was traded by Pittsburgh to Chicago in the middle of the 2003 season. Ramirez isnt quite sure what to expect now that hes on the other side of the intense Cubs-Brewers rivalry. “I dont know,” Ramirez said. “Ive got to experience it first. I know its going to be a little different, because I played in Chicago most of my career.” And hell enjoy playing in Miller Park with the roof closed in April. “I just dont like the cold weather,” Ramirez said. Ramirez gets $6 million next year, $10 million in 2013 and $16 million in 2014, of which $6 million is deferred. There is a $14 million mutual option for 2015 with a $4 million buyout. The deferred money from 2014 is due in two $3 million payments on Dec. 15 in 2017 and 2018. If the 2015 buyout money is paid, it would be owed in two $2 million payments on Dec. 15 in 2015 and 2016. Part of the Brewers pitch to land Ramirez came from principal owner Mark Attanasio and manager Ron Roenicke, who met with Ramirez in California while he was there to visit with another team that was interested in signing him. Melvin said he recently talked to former Cubs general manager Jim Hendry, who said Ramirez is the kind of hitter you want at the plate in pressure situations. “Like Aramis said, youre probably not ever going to totally replace Prince,” Melvin said. “But these are some big numbers that hes put up.” . VANCOUVER — John Tortorella was shocked by what he had witnessed, but he wasnt the only one. The Vancouver coach and an announced sellout crowd of 18,910 watched in dismay as the Canucks lost 7-4 to the New York Islanders on Monday night by squandering a 3-0 lead in the third period. “This is a kick in the teeth,” said Tortorella “Its certainly going to take a little bit more than normal coachs speak (to get) by this game.” Matt Martins goal at 10:04 of the third proved to be the winner as the Islanders rallied with seven third period goals, including four in the first 6:22. New Yorks first three goals came on power plays and its fourth came one second after another Vancouver penalty had expired. “A 3-0 deficit going into the third period, we were pretty deflated,” said Martin. “The coaches came in and made it clear we didnt do enough in the second period and we didnt play for one another, and if we didnt pick up our game in the third period theyd have no problem taking guys out of the lineup and not dressing everybody.” Josh Bailey, Ryan Strome, Calvin de Haan, Frans Nielsen, Anders Lee and Cal Clutterbuck also scored for the Islanders (25-33-9). “Ive never been in a game like that as far as seeing a period like that, because we were playing so well going in,” said Tortorella. “In between periods, we talked about the things we needed to do to nail that game down, but we really put ourselves in a jam with some bad penalties and they gained momentum a” His voice trailed off and then he continued: “What could happen, happened. And, its been going on for a little while here, since eternity. But, somehow, weve gotta try and put it behind us.” Chris Higgins, Henrik Sedin, Ryan Kesler and Chris Tanev scored for the Canucks (29-28-10), who suffered their 12th loss in the past 14 games. “We just took some bad penalties and they had some seeing-eye shots that went in and got the momentum,” said Higgins. “We battled back to tie it up and they scored that fifth goal.” Rookie Nicklas Jensen was in the box for New Yorks first two goals. The first penalty, a slaashing infraction late in the second period, prevented a goal.dddddddddddd But the second one was a holding call in the offensive zone. The penalties spoiled what could have been an extremely memorable night for Jensen as he recorded his first NHL point with an assist on Sedins goal. New York converted four of eight man-advantage opportunities while Vancouver was good on two of four. Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov made 20 saves for the win as Eddie Lack stopped 21 shots for the Canucks. “Its was a very weird third period,” said Lack. “Its not only the (penalty killers) fault, its my fault, too. I need to stop the puck and I didnt tonight.” After Bailey put the Isles on the scoreboard 1:13 into the third, Strome, on a five-on-three, and de Haan scored seconds apart to create a 3-3 tie. Nielsen put the Islanders ahead 4-3 just under three minutes later as he put in a shot from the wing. The crowd let out a huge roar of relief after Tanev brought the Canucks even at 9:54 of the third. Martin, however, gave the Isles the lead only 10 seconds later on a backhand from the slot, and Lee padded New Yorks lead just a minute and 44 seconds later. A disappointed Kesler said the Canucks have to start playing like they still want to make the playoffs. “Being up 3-0 and the blowing it like that, its embarrassing,” he said. Notes-Alex Burrows drew an assist on Keslers goal, earning his 300th NHL career point. a The Islanders had seven rookies in their lineup.a The Isles lost Michael Grabner, a former Canuck, to an upper-body injury late in the second period following a collision with Vancouver defenceman Tanev. a Canucks winger Zack Kassian served the second of a three-game suspensiona The game was rare in that it featured three Denmark natives – Jensen and Jannik Hansen of the Canucks and Nielsen of the Islanders. All three of them earned points. Only seven Danish players have suited up in the NHL this season. a Monday marked the ninth anniversary of the Aquilini Investment Groups purchase of the Canucks from former owner John McCaw. a Islanders defenceman Thomas Hickey is the only player to suit up for all 67 of their games this season. Anthony Calvillo was named the best player in the CFL today in a pre-season poll of Canadian Football experts and analysts. But, as Calvillo closes in on two of the CFLs most-coveted all-time records, the question is beginning to arise: is he the greatest quarterback in the leagues history? Hes up against some stiff competition with some of his long-time CFL counterparts, but the numbers Calvillo has racked up over the past decade and a half are getting harder and harder to argue with. First, though, the competition: Damon Allen currently shares the leagues all-time touchdown passes record and is tops in passing yards. He is professional footballs all-time leading passer with 72,381 yards, so statistically-speaking, hes the man Calvillo is chasing down for all-time-greatest status. In 23 CFL seasons with Edmonton, Ottawa, Hamilton, Memphis, B.C. and Toronto, Allen won four Grey Cups and was named MVP in three of them. He also won the leagues Most Outstanding Player Award in 2005. Allen is also unquestionably the leagues greatest rushing quarterback, topping the all-time rushing yards list for quarterbacks with 11,920. That total is more than 3,000 better than second-place Tracy Ham and more than double the next person down on the list. Doug Flutie is perhaps the toughest of the competition to quantify, since his CFL career spanned a mere eight seasons. However, few can argue with the achievements he attained during that span. Flutie racked up 270 touchdown passes in just 135 games and passed for 41,355 career yards, good for sixth on the leagues all-time list. Flutie is also responsible for two of the three highest single-season performances in terms of passing yards and possesses three of the four highest single-season touchdown pass records. He won six Most Outstanding Player awards in his eight years, as well as winning MVP in all three of his Grey Cup victories. For many years, before the league was dominated by long-standing, highly-effective quarterbacks like Calvillo, Allen and Doug Flutie, Ron Lancaster was the stand-alone name in most quarterback categories. Lancaster led the Saskatchewan Roughriders to 12 Western Conference finals in his 16 years with the team and to this day remains fourth on the leagues all-time passing yardage list with 50,535 yards. His 6,676 playoff passing yards is still tops amongst CFL quarterbacks by over 1,700 yards. So, where does Calvillo rank? He is on the verge of claiming the two most coveted quarterback records in the CFLs books, sitting tied with Allens 394 touchdown passes and sits less than 4,000 yards behind Allen with a career total of 68,892. His trophy case is full, with a trio of Grey Cups to go with his three Most Outstanding Player awards. His 2,470 passing yards in Grey Cup games is tops all-time and there have been only three occasions since 2000 where he was unable to lead the Alouettes to the Grey Cup Final. Meanwhile many other quarterbacks have made contributions that warrant entry into the discussion: Danny McManus 3,640 completions and 53,255 passing yards both rank third all-time behind Allen and Calvillo. Warren Moon dominated the CFL for a too-brief period in the late 1970s and early 80s before leaving for the NFL. Russ Jackson is probably the games greatest Canadian pivot, while Matt Dunigans 43,857 passing yards and 306 touchdown passes rank among the all-time leaders. So, is Calvillos resume the greatest all-time amongst CFL quarterbacks? Its Your! Call. . The 11-year NBA veteran scored 18 of his 28 points in the third quarter and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Phoenix Suns 104-96 Tuesday to match their season best of five victories in a row.MONTREAL – One by one did they file off the ice at the Bell Centre as Max Pacioretty and the Montreal Canadiens celebrated victory just steps away from the since-vacated crease of Jonathan Bernier. The good saw the Maple Leafs pick up at least a point for the 14th time in the past 16 games (11-2-3), the bad saw opportunity to draw even with a division rival foiled on yet another blown third period lead. Rather than depart the grand old city of Montreal with a share of second place in the Atlantic division, Toronto heads home three points back of their Original-Six rival with an eye on what went well and what mightve been. “Were disappointed to not get the other one,” said Dion Phaneuf of the point lost in overtime. “But we did a lot of good things.” The effort was vastly improved from a post-Olympic dud in Long Island two nights earlier, one that saw them dribble away a pair of third period leads before falling in the extra frame to a struggling Islanders squad. It didnt start well. Montreal scored twice on this night before the Leafs had even managed a shot on goal in what was a sluggish opening frame for both teams. But from there, the visitors gradually wrestled some control of the hockey game, scoring three unanswered, all from the scorching duo of James van Riemsdyk and Phil Kessel. Kessel broke a 2-2 tie with his 33rd of the year – the second of two in a span of just over two minutes – dancing around Pacioretty just outside the Montreal blue-line before beating Peter Budaj with a laser far-side. “We came back from it,” said head coach Randy Carlyle of the early deficit. “We found ways to create offence and I thought we had a majority of the puck time probably from the second period on so there were a lot of positives in the game.” Just as they failed to do against the Islanders, the Leafs could not hold a third period lead, this one of increased importance opposite a foe just steps ahead in the playoff race. Tim Gleason took the first of three consecutive (and certainly contested) Toronto penalties, whistled for interference on Brian Gionta along the wall in the defensive zone. The maneuver (one that drew ire from Carlyle) proved costly as P.K. Subban fired a one-time blast short-side beyond Bernier, evening the score at three. “We had a one-goal lead and we took three straight penalties,” said Carlyle afterward. “Now we can challenge the validity of the penalties one way or another, but we took three straight penalties.” The last of which was just as unlikely as the two that preceded it. Racing out of his crease to protect a puck that was up for grabs, Bernier was dealt a delay of game offence, the second of two such penalties for the Leafs in overtime. After wiping out the first to Kessel, the Toronto penalty kill could not ultimately hold the fort, surrendering a second power-play goal to the Canadiens. Subban loaded up in this instance for another one-time blast, only his stick shattered, the puck squirting to Andrei Markov and eventually Pacioretty in the slot for the overtime winner. It was the summation of a brief, two-game road trip that could have and (probably should have considering the circumstance) yielded a full four points, valuable points lost in an ever-tightening playoff race. And so while they could point to the good of the evening, there was certainly an undercurrent of what was actually lost and that was an opportunity to catch the Habs. “We turned the tide of the hockey game in our favour for the majority of it and were going to take the positives out of it and move on,” said Carlyle. “Were .500 on the road (trip) which in this situation isnt great – wed like to have won both hockey games in our minds, but this is the way it goes.” Five Points 1. Dynamic Duo They sizzled before the Olympics, during the Olympics and now after the Olympics. Kessel, who had a goal and an assist for the third straight game, continues to boil at a heat hes never before attained in the NHL. The 26-year-old now has 13 goals and 31 points in the past 17 games and 17 points in the past nine games alone. “Ive said it for quite a few years now that Ive played with him, I think hes one of the top players in the National Hockey League,” said Phaneuf. “Hes proving it year and year again that hes extremely skilled (and) he can put the puck in the net with the best of the goal-scorers in the NHL. I think that hes having a tremendous year and hes a huge part of our team and why weve had success.” Tied for the Olympic lead in scoring and now with 69 points this season, Kessel is alone in second place to Sidney Crosby in the scoring race. He is four goals from matching a soon-to-be broken career-high of 37. James van Riemsdyk meanwhile continues to fly himself. The 24-year-old, who matched a career-high with three assists in Long Island and finished third in Olympic scoring, scored twice against Montreal. His first of the night and second shorthanded marker this season was a thing of beauty. Racing past Subban on a failed Markov feed, he burst in alone on Budaj, tucking a nifty backhand through the five-hole. “At first I wasnt even sure if I was going to even go for it, but I realized that they looked pretty tired and just kind of took off and went from there,” he said. Totaling 52 points on the year, van Riemsdyk is up to 24th in the scoring race. 2. Officiating Concerns Carlyle didnt hide his displeasure with the officials after the Pacioretty goal, barking at them as he left the ice in defeat. What stuck most in his craw was the call on Gleason which preceded Subbans game-tying goal. The 31-year-old Gleason stepped in the way of Gionta just ahead of the puck and was hauled off for it. “I was under the impression that if it was one one-thousand yoou could take the players body if the player tries to make a play on it,” Carlyle said.dddddddddddd “I just said how do you call that in a 3-2 game and I figured I really didnt even hit him, I just kind of one-armed (him),” said Gleason of his conversation with the officials afterward, not having seen the replay himself. Further concerns were raised when Kessel was called for delay of game in the final moments of regulation. He attempted to ring a puck off the glass – and did in the minds of his teammates – but was called for the penalty anyway. “Maybe youd like to see that video review for that because you cant get that wrong at that time of the game,” said van Riemsdyk. “Its definitely a tough one. Couple other ones that were a little debatable.” The last in dispute saw Bernier jump out of his crease in overtime, snatching hold of a loose puck from Daniel Briere and freezing play. “I havent been called for that ever I guess,” said the 25-year-old. “I dont even know whats the rule, how far you can actually get it and freeze it.” The rule in this case is clear (63.2). “If the goalkeeper races out of his crease in an attempt to beat the attacking player to the puck and instead of playing the puck jumps on the puck causing a stoppage of play, this shall be a minor penalty for delay of game.” 3. Slight Dip Jonathan Bernier entered the Olympic break on a roll, winning five of his last six starts while stopping 105 of the final 109 shots he faced. But in two starts post-Olympics he has looked rather ordinary, yielding five goals to the Islanders on Thursday (without much help) and four more to his hometown Canadiens on Saturday. “I thought it was actually a tough game for me,” he said of a rare night with fewer than 30 shots against, Montreal mustering just 29. “They had a lot of bodies in front of me. They were hitting me quite a bit. It was a tough game. And thats one thing that when youre away from the game thats the hard part for a goalie is to find that seam and find that puck through traffic.” Never in his NHL career has Bernier played as much as he has this season for the Leafs, starting his 40th game on Saturday. His performance as the no. 1 down the stretch under such strain will certainly be worth monitoring and key for a club that has relied on great goaltending from the Laval, Quebec native on many a nights. 4. Bollands Mountain Climb Dave Bolland missed his 47th game Saturday because of a once-severed and now healing tendon in his left ankle. The four-month recovery process has been taxing on the 27-year-old, who is close to a return, but not quite there yet. “Its sort of a slow mountain climb for me this whole rehab,” said Bolland. “Its been painful and slow and grueling. Im ready to get back on the ice as soon as possible.” Bolland is listed as day-to-day and according to head coach, Randy Carlyle, is at the stage where he, the player, will decide when exactly he is ready to return. For the Mimico native, who played in 15 games for the Leafs in October, its about being up to speed with the fundamentals, areas such as being strong in the corners and fully able to handle defensive responsibilities at full speed. “I dont want to be a liability out there when transition comes around and Im the one thats last getting back and I cant back-check because of my ankle,” he said. “I want to be sure that when Im out there Im going at a 100 per cent and Im ready to play.” He doesnt appear to be at that point yet, even suffering a setback in practice earlier in the week. “Thats just the way these injuries heal,” Carlyle said. "Its a severe injury to a vital part in his body, specifically a tendon in his foot. When you put a skate on it, theres a lot more complications than just you and I walking around. Hes putting skates on and putting a lot of pressure in that area. “Basically its up to him. Hes got to be the guy that tells us hes ready to go.” 5. Hollands Lace-Bite It was the final game of January and Peter Holland played 11 minutes in a 6-3 win over Florida. He was in pain the whole night, but didnt think much of it. “I went to sleep and woke up in the morning and could hardly put any weight on it,” Holland said of his foot. The 23-year-old had suffered from lace bite before (which causes pain from skates being too tight) but nothing quite like this. “It was just released as lace-bite but it ended up getting pretty badly infected,” said Holland, recalled by the Leafs for Saturdays game against the Canadiens. “I was in the hospital for four or five days with an IV in my arm trying to look after it. It was pretty painful for a while there. I was on crutches (and) in a walking boot and couldnt put too much weight on it.” Holland missed four games with the injury before being assigned to the Toronto Marlies for two games. He played just under 12 minutes against Montreal, centering a line with Mason Raymond and Nik Kulemin. Stats-Pack 31 – Points for Phil Kessel in the past 17 games. 14-14 – Goal differential between the Leafs and Canadiens this season. 30:34 – Ice-time for Dion Phaneuf on Saturday, a season-high. 13-6-3 – Toronto record versus the Atlantic division. 11-2-3 – Record the past 16 games. 11 – Goals in the past 17 games for James van Riemsdyk, who has a career-high of 26 so far this season. Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week they discuss football enrolment, the reimagining of Mike Tyson, Denis the “Tweeting Mayor” Coderre and Sochi security. Bruce Arthur, National Post: My thumb is up to what appears to be happening in football at its roots. ESPN reported this week that Pop Warner Football, Americas biggest youth football program, experienced a 9.5 per cent drop in enrolment between 2010 and 2012, largely over what appears to be a fear of children experiencing concussions. Another survey said participation in tackle football has fallen 13 per cent since 2011. We still have a lot to learn about concussions; not every kid will be irreparably damaged by football, and not every kid will get away clean. But given everything we are learning about the dangers of the game – and since six American high school players have died playing football in 2013 alone – talking about whether you want your kids to take the chance seems like something close to the least a person can do. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is down to the daily attempt and the publics buy-in to the rehabilitation of Mike Tysons image. You cant turn on your television set these days without being exposed to a Tyson movie, a documentary, an upcoming book, something. You can even turn on a comedy movie like “The Hangover” and see him in a cameo role. And laugh we all do, uncomfortably. Thats not the Mike Tyson I covered for more than a decade. That guy went to prison for rape in 1992, went to prison again in 1999, was accused of assaulting his first wife, was arrested 38 times before he was 13, arrested again in 2006, 2008, 2009 for drugs and assault and more. You can buy in on the new Mike Tyson. Sorry, Ive seen too much. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is up to Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre, who tweets em as he sees em. Coderre tweeted he wanted to send scuffling Canadiens centre David Desharnais to Hamilton, which, in Montreal, amounted to taking a strong populist stand. I was awaiting Desharnais tweet that Coderre should be shipped to Chicoutimi. Ive had a fondness for sports mayors ever since Philadelphia mayor Ed Rendell told me before a World Series game at SkyDome that he would relish a chance to hit against Todd Stottlemyre. Anyway, after Desharnais shootout winner in Columbus Friday, Coderre tweeted, “Bravo, David.” I look forward to Coderres Twitter account tackling my citys other pressing issues, such as P.K. Subbans penalty killing minutes. Dave Hodge, TSN: My thumb is down to any sporting event whose location, sheer size or stated importance makes necessary the kind of security measures that will exist at huge cost at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. To understand, there were patrols by combat jets, surface-to-air missiles on rooftops and an aircraft carrier on the river Thames at the London Olympics, and Sochi is promising police and soldiers in double the numbers mobilized in 2012. Spectators must carry and show at all times Olympic passports that will not respect their privacy – theyll be watched by more than 5,000 closed-circuit cameras and a fleet of drones – it is said they could be monitored on their phones and computers and their email could be intercepted. And they dare not protest those things or any other things as they go about their business as sports fans. Wainwright became the National Leagues first eight-game winner by dominating Cincinnati again, and the St. OTTAWA — There is still some life in the Ottawa Senators. Milan Michalek and Kyle Turris scored twice Sunday as the Senators defeated the Calgary Flames 6-3, giving Ottawa seven points in its past four games. The win moves the Sens to within six points of the Columbus Blue Jackets and the second wild-card berth in the Eastern Conference with eight games remaining. “Well have to continue to play hard in those games and Ill like where well be at the 82-game mark. I might be dreaming but thats what I believe,” Senators coach Paul MacLean said. Clarke MacArthur scored on a tip in 13 minutes into the third period after Jared Cowen had given the Senators a 4-3 lead a little over a minute into the third period. That third period was what allowed the Senators to keep their hopes alive. “We were very pleased with how we played the third period, giving up six shots, and the way we put the game away was good,” MacLean said. Turris scored into an empty net and Robin Lehner made 37 saves allowing the Senators (31-29-14) to win back-to-back games on home ice for the first time since they won three straight in late December and early January. “In the third we continued to play our game and we were smarter and made better decisions,” said Turris, who also had an assist. “We put the puck deep when we were up by one or two and we played our game the whole way through, we just made smarter decisions in the third.” Matt Stajan, Paul Byron and Sean Monahan scored for the Flames (31-37-7) and Karri Ramo made 31 saves. The Flames could not have played a much better period than they did in the second as they outshot the Senators 21-9, but the best they were able to do after taking a 3-2 lead was go into the second intermission tied 3-3. Ottawa native Byron scored four minutes into the period for the Flames to tie the game as he corralled a rebound in the slot and put a shot into the top corner. It was only Byrons third career game in his hometown and he has a goal in two of those games. He scored his first goal in his second NHL game in early 2011 when he was a member of the Buffalo Sabres. “I always enjoy playing in Ottawa in front of friends and family and I appreciative of all the things theyve done for me over the years,” said Byron, who played his junior hockey across the Ottawa River with the QMJHLs Gatineau Olympiques, where he staarred alongside Claude Giroux, now captain of the Philadelphia Flyers.dddddddddddd “Its hard to stay focused sometimes and you get distracted getting tickets and putting people on lists to see after (the game). I just try to stay focused and Im happy I have success here.” A little more than three minutes after Byron tied the game, former Ottawa 67s standout Sean Monahan scored to give the Flames a 3-2 lead as he picked the corner over Lehners left shoulder. The goal was the 20th of the season for Monahan, making him the third rookie this season to reach that plateau along with Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche (23) and Tyler Johnson of the Tampa Bay Lightning (22). Losing that lead wasnt something Monahan or the rest of the Flames were particularly proud of. “I dont know what it was but like I said its not a game we can lose and its pretty upsetting. They capitalized on their chances and they put the puck in the back of the net. Thats something that we can fix and theyre simple mistakes,” Monahan said. “We had a lot of chances and unfortunately we couldnt capitalize on some of them. At the end of the day we have to find a way to pull out the win.” The Senators had gone into the second period with a 2-1 lead as Michalek sandwiched goals around one from Stajan. Michalek opened the scoring when he redirected a point shot from Erik Karlsson past Ramo at 10:42. Less than three minutes later though, Stajan jumped into the slot and buried a pass from behind the net past Lehner. Michalek re-established a one-goal lead for the Senators thanks to some terrific patience from Jason Spezza. The Senators captain moved around a sliding Calgary defenceman behind the goal-line, cut back out in front and slid a backhand pass that Michalek buried for a 2-1 lead. Notes: Cody Ceci, Bobby Ryan and Colin Greening were scratches for the Ottawa Senators while scratches for the Calgary Flames were Bryce Van Bradrant, Ladislav Smid, Dennis Wideman, Kenny Agostino, David Jones, Ben Hanowski and Markus Granlund. …The game was the first Ceci has missed in his career since he was called up from Binghamton in early December. He played in 41 straight games. … The Flames have played in 45 one-goal games this season and remain one shy of establishing a new franchise record. Their record in those games is 22-16-7. Ortega played 42 games for Double-A Tulsa in the Texas League last season before sustaining a hairline fracture on his shin.International football badly needed a good World Cup. The jury is yet to deliver a verdict with the knockout rounds still to come, but all indications are that this will not be a good World Cup. Indeed, it is on track to be a great World Cup. Two weeks to the day that the opening match of the tournament between Brazil and Croatia came to a close, the curtain came down on the group stages and what a sensational show it was. We are now already through three quarters of the tournament, but rather than be sad that much of it is over, we should be grateful with what we witnessed. It was a group stage that gave us more special moments than the three previous World Cups combined. A group stage of surprises, where tactically versatile and organized sides shocked the so-called super powers of the game. A group stage that saw the renaissance of 3-5-2, used so well by surprise teams like Netherlands, Costa Rica and Mexico. A group stage of counterattackers, comebacks and headers, trends that the Netherlands used in their demolition of Spain back on Day 2. Their superb pressing and clinical finishing gave us a glimpse of what was to come in Brazil, but not before that look and pass by Daley Blind just before the half-time break. The ball landed on top of the supremely intelligent head of Robin van Persie and his magnificent header over Iker Casillas changed everything. It became the group stage of headers with 27 more following van Persies, but none of them beating it. It became the group stage of comebacks. Spain, massacred by the Dutch 5-1 in the third game of the tournament, was already the second team, after Croatia a day earlier, to lose a game they led. A small, exclusive group of only four from 2010 would grow quickly as Uruguay, Japan, Ecuador, Algeria and Australia joined them in the first week. During their second group games Germany, Ghana, Portugal and USA all managed to not win games against each other that they led in. Even Uruguay, Greece and Algeria had comebacks of their own, all qualifying despite losing their opening World Cup match. Only Spain did that in 2010. It became the group stage of counterattacks, once again ignited by the Dutch over Spain as they scored their last three goals with a combined 29 seconds in possession, and never more highlighted than when Switzerland broke away in the final seconds to score a dramatic, crucial winner over Ecuador. It became the group stage of creative, left-footed masters who glided across the field into space left open by a transition. The group stage of substitute goals, 24 in total, highlighted by Miroslav Klose joining the great Ronaldo on 15 World Cup goals and James Rodriguez dancing his way through the Japanese defence for one of the goals of the tournament. In the end, though, it was the group stage of goals as an incredible 136 wennt in (there was a total of 145 scored in South Africa).dddddddddddd It was no surprise that a wind of caution blew around the stadiums as the third group games took place but before they started the goals per game ratio stood at a wonderful 2.96. It ends the group stage at a beautifully high 2.83. There are still 16 games to go, of course, but no World Cup since 1970 has come close to that average. It wasnt just about the amount of goals, however. Many of the worlds stars were the ones scoring and we already have three world class stars on four goals each through three games. My 23 man squad of the group stages GK – Guillermo Ochoa (Mexico), Keylor Navas (Costa Rica), Vincent Enyeama (Nigeria) D – Serge Aurier (Ivory Coast), Cristian Gamboa (Costa Rica), Kostas Manolas (Greece), Rafa Marquez (Mexico), Mario Yepes (Colombia), Raphael Varene (France), Giancarlo Gonzalez (Costa Rica), Daley Blind (Netherlands). M – Jose Vazquez (Mexico), Hector Herrera (Mexico), Blaise Matuidi (France), Charles Aranguiz (Chile), Toni Kroos (Germany), James Rodriguez (Colombia) F – Neymar (Brazil), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Karim Benzema (France), Thomas Muller (Germany), Arjen Robben (Netherlands), Robin Van Persie (Netherlands) Group Winners – Brazil, Netherlands, Colombia, Costa Rica, France, Argentina, Germany & Belgium. For the third time in the last four World Cups, three teams that were not seeded won groups. For the second successive World Cup, the only seed that didnt progress through to the next stage was the previous winners (Spain 2014, Italy 2010). Since the World Cup went to 32 teams in 1998, over the last four World Cups, nine group winners have lost in the next round (average of more than two per World Cup) and there hasnt been a World Cup in that time when all group winners advanced. Runners-up – Mexico, Chile, Greece, Uruguay, Switzerland, Nigeria, USA & Algeria. With that stat in mind it is likely that at least one of these teams will beat their opponent. Look for Greece, Uruguay, possibly Mexico, USA and even Chile to continue this streak. After that? In nine of the last 10 World Cups a group runner-up has made it to at least the semi-final stage. That will be the target of one of these teams going forward. Ranking teams eliminated at this World Cup based on performances in Brazil 32. Honduras31. Cameroon30. Japan29. South Korea28. England27. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Robinson Cano delivered the biggest hit of the day for the Seattle Mariners, but not before a perfectly executed drag bunt set up things against one of the best pitchers in baseball. James Jones went 3 for 4, including a bunt single that wound up in the middle of three converging players and loaded the bases for Cano, whose third-inning, opposite-field double drove in two runs in Mondays 3-0 victory over David Price and the sputtering Tampa Bay Rays. “Were a team that has to do anything to win a game,” Cano said. “We dont have three or four or five guys thatll hit 30 home runs, so weve got to play the little game, do the little things.” Five Seattle pitchers combined on a five-hitter, blanking the punchless Rays for the second straight days. The Mariners extended their scoreless streak to 19 innings and won for the eighth time in nine games. “Our last seven or eight starts have been pretty darn good. Our starters have given us everything weve asked them and probably a little bit more,” manager Lloyd McClendon said. “With that our bullpen is even better.” The Rays, whove made the playoffs four or the past six seasons, have lost 13 of 14 and are saddled with the worst record in the major leagues at 24-41. The last time they were 17 games under .500 was the end of 2007, the final year they were known as the Devil Rays. “Right now, were the worst team. I dont anticipate finishing like that … but right now, weve earned that position,” Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. “Do I believe we can turn this around? Absolutely,” he said. “But right now, if youre a baseball fan watching us, and you look at everything, you have to consider us the worst team.” Canos big hit came on an 0-2 pitch during a three-run third inning against Price (4-6), who struck out 10 in eight innings. The 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner has dropped three straight decisions and hasnt won in nine starts since beating Minnesota on April 22. “It just goes to show you how good this guy is,” McClendon said of Cano. “Against one of the toughest lefties in baseball and down like that. … That was a huge hit for us.” Mariners starter Erasmo Ramirez didnt allow a run, but failed to get through the fifth inning to qualify for the victory. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed four hits and walked five in 4 2/3 innings. Joe Beimel (1-1) retired the only two batters he faced to get the victory, and Fernando Rodney worked a perfect ninth for his 18th save in 20 opportunities. The Rays were shut out for the AL-high ninth time overall. Seattle finished a 6-1 road trip. The Mariners won three straight over Tampa Bay after dropping the opener of the four-game series. Price allowed three runs and seven hits and walked one. He has the best strikeout to walk ratio in baseball, but has also yielded a major league-leading 105 hits 99 2/3 innings. The Rays stranded seven runners and were 0 for 5 with men in scoring position through four innings against Ramirez, who entered the game with a 6.82 ERA. The frustration continued in the fifth, when Ramirez gave up a two-out double to James Loney and walked Ben Zobrist before McClendon turned to his bullpen. Beimel fanned pinch-hitter Jerry Sands, ending the threat and eliciting smattering of groans and boos from the crowd of 10,400 at Tropicana Field. “At some point, we have to get our bats alive,” Maddon said. “The effort is wonderful. The work is great,” the manager added. “The hits arent there.” NOTES: Struggling Grant Balfour is out as the Rays closer. Maddon said the team instead will close games by committee. … Mariners 1B Justin Smoak (sore left leg) and OF Michael Saunders (sore right shoulder) were out of the starting lineup for the third consecutive game. … Rays rookie right-hander Jake Odorizzi (2-6) will go against St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright (8-3) in the opener of a two-game interleague series Tuesday night. Odorizzi grew up 35 minutes from St. Louis and called his start against the Cardinals a “special occasion.” … In a matchup of former teammates with Rakuten of Japans Pacific League, Mariners RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (4-2) and Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka (9-1) will start in the opener of a three-game series in Seattle. The Blue Jays are in first place in the AL East.TORONTO — R.A. Dickey, his knuckleball moving like the noggin on his bobblehead giveaway, gave the Toronto Blue Jays a sorely needed quality start Sunday. And the rest of the team also stepped up, with Brett Lawrie and Edwin Encarnacion combining to drive in four runs in a 7-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Toronto (12-13) leaves for an eight-game road trip, which starts Tuesday in Kansas City, having washed away the taste of a sour four-game losing streak at home. The Jays, who had given up 36 runs on 47 hits and 22 walks during the four-game slide, badly needed a change of direction. Dickey said a talk by manager John Gibbons after Saturdays 7-6 loss, when a Jays comeback fell just short, had done the trick. “He was just so encouraging,” said Dickey, who got the win on his first major-league bobblehead giveaway day. "I think everybody left the clubhouse feeling at ease about who we are as a team. So we just needed to come out today and be ourselves. And we were able to do that. “We fought hard. Guys were getting dirty, diving for balls, taking the extra base. I was able to throw strikes and we had a great team win today.” Said Gibbons: “It was a much-needed win, I will definitely say.” On a weekend where racism in sports made headlines thanks to Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, the Jays made Major League Baseball history with a record six Dominicans in the starting lineup: Encarnacion, Jose Reyes, Melky Cabrera, Jose Bautista, Juan Francisco and Moises Sierra. The Dominicans signed the lineup card, which Bautista said was going to be sent to the Dominican Museum of Baseball. “It was an honour to be part of that today,” said Reyes. An announced sellout of 45,260 at the Rogers Centre saw Dickey outduel Jon Lester with Lawrie providing the early offence before the Jays put the game away with two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth. Lawrie, who entered the game hitting .165 but leading the team in RBIs, drove in two runs with a homer and double to increase his RBI total to 20. Dickey (2-3) scattered five hits over 6 1/3 innings, giving up one run and striking out six. Walks have been a thorn in the Jays side. Toronto pitchers had issued 108 free passes going into play Sunday — second-worst in the majors — with Dickey tied for the MLB lead with 18. But Dickey was in control Sunday. He threw 95 pitches, including 62 strikes, and didnt issue a walk for the first time since October 2012. “When I have one to zero to two walks, its usually going to be a pretty good day,” he said. “And thats what I have to get back to and today was a step in that direction.” Relievers Stevve Delabar and Esmil Rogers closed out the game for Toronto, which outhit Boston 9-6.dddddddddddd Lester (2-4) deserved better from his seven innings. He gave up four runs on five hits, striking out seven and walking none. He threw 120 pitches, 80 for strikes, as Boston (12-14) was denied its first sweep of Toronto since June 10-12, 2011. The Boston left-hander came into the game with a 15-7 career mark against Toronto, having held the Jays to a .199 batting average. It was the first win for Dickey since April 5 and came after three starts in which he went 0-2 with 13 walks in 13 1/3 innings. He used his fastball more than usual, knowing that Boston led the league in pitches seen. “So I knew they were probably going to be patient. And nothings worse than seeing a fastball down the middle from a knuckleball pitcher and letting it go,” he added. Some observers thought Dickey seemed irked at being pulled in the seventh inning. The pitcher, who has faded in some previous starts, said hes just “passionate” about what he does. He acknowledged he had told both Gibbons and pitching coach Pete Walker to keep a close eye on him in case he did falter. After the Jays went ahead 2-1 in the third, Dickey and Lester took turns mowing down the opposition. It took some time but Toronto bats finally came alive, welcome news for Dickey who had only got five runs in support before leaving in his five previous starts. Toronto increased its lead to 4-1 in the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Encarnacion and Lawrie and an RBI groundout by Sierra. Lester had retired 10 straight prior to the inning. Reyes scored on an RBI single by Bautista — who extended his on-base streak to 25 games — in the eighth before Encarnacion drove in two more with another double. Dickey retired his first five hitters before giving up a run on three straight singles with the RBI going to Jackie Bradley Jr. Lawrie tied it up with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the second, depositing a 3-2 Lester delivery into left-centre for his sixth homer. Lawrie has just 17 hits this season but seven have been for extra-base hits. Toronto went ahead 2-1 in the third on Cabreras two-out RBI double, sending Josh Thole home. Thole, Dickeys personal catcher, singled down the left-field line and then advanced on Jonathan Diazs sacrifice bunt. Cabrera, who came into the game leading the majors in hits, now has 39 including 13 of the extra-base variety. Dickey was slated to head home after the game, with a couple of bobbleheads under his arm for his kids. “Theyre not going to be collectors at my house,” he said. “The heads are going to be popped off by the end of the day.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

Bronx, NY – The New York Yankees acquired left-handed pitcher Jeff Francis in a trade with the Oakland Athletics on Friday. The deal sent Francis and cash considerations to New York for a player to be named later. The Yankees needed to add depth to their rotation with ace Masahiro Tanaka out indefinitely. Tanaka has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow and with successful rehab could return in approximately six weeks. Francis, a first-round draft pick by the Colorado Rockies in 2002, was recently designated for assignment by the Athletics after recording a 6.08 ERA in nine relief appearances over 13 1/3 innings. The veteran has a 5.89 ERA in 10 games with Oakland and the Cincinnati Reds this season. For his career, the 33-year-old has a record of 70-80 with a 4.95 ERA and 847 strikeouts in 238 games. The Yankees also designated right-hander Jim Miller for assignment and recalled right-hander Matt Daley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Ukrainians are scheduled to face the United States in a friendly on Wednesday in Cyprus, a match moved from Kharkiv to Larnaca for security reasons. “The national team is a symbol of unity because players come from all over Ukraine,” said its captain Anatoliy Tymoshchuk on a wind-swept practice pitch behind the teams hotel in the coastal resort of Ayia Napa. “Were all one big family, were all united.” Speaking ahead of the teams training session on Tuesday, Tymoshchuk said the troubles at home do weigh on players minds. “Its a dangerous situation,” he said. “We have our families, we worry but we hope that we can keep the peace in Ukraine as quickly as possible.” Team spokesman Alexander Glyvynskyy said Wednesdays match is dedicated to the people of Ukraine under the slogan “Peace for Ukraine.” “We are not ready for war,” Glyvynskyy said. “We hope that we can be good neighbours (with Russia) in the future.” Ukraine coach Mykhailo Fomenko said he wanted his teams performance to send a message of unity back home. “Most important is unity and concentration, its important for all Ukrainians,” Fomenko said. “I told the players to play like one unit.” Despite threats to cancel the match, Ukraine football association president Anatoliy Konkov said Tuesday the game would go ahead. “(We) reached a consensus to play the USA after all,” Konkov said in a statement that also praised the American team. “(They) stood behind us to protect the national iinterests and territorial integrity of Ukraine.dddddddddddd.” The match, which will be played at Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium, is a key warm-up for the United States ahead of this years World Cup. But for Ukraine, which failed to qualify for the tournament in Brazil, it will serve as preparation for the qualifying tournament for the 2016 European Championship. “This game is a huge opportunity, mainly for our European-based players, for those guys to prove to us that they are eager and hungry to jump on the train to the FIFA World Cup,” U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. Fomenko said earlier in Kyiv that he expects Wednesdays game to be similar in style to a Premier League match, since many of the American players play for English clubs. Glyvynskyy said he expects the Americans to play an attacking game, but that Ukraine is injury-free and has all its best players available. “The players want to play on an official level and want to test their level of play after a two-month winter break,” he said. He added that Cyprus was an ideal location for the match because it was relatively simple to organize at short notice and there are no problems with visa issues. Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium has hosted many of Cyprus international matches, but its not the Mediterranean islands top football venue. The GSP Stadium in Nicosia, however, is unavailable because Cyprus is hosting Northern Ireland in another friendly. Its the second time in recent weeks that Cyprus has been selected as an alternate venue for a match involving a Ukrainian team. Last month, a Europa League match between Dynamo Kyiv and Valencia was moved to the Cypriot capital. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

The CFL Players Association has voted to ratify the proposed new collective bargaining agreement. The PA confirmed the ratification via press release on Thursday night. It was unclear which way the players were leaning prior to the vote. After the league and CFLPA struck a tentative deal on Saturday, many players publicly voiced their displeasure over the terms. The five-year deal calls for a $5 million salary cap which was below the PAs opening proposal of more than $6 million per year. The Players Association also wanted the agreement to be renegotiable after the third year if league revenues increased by more than $18 million, but settled for the leagues figure of $27 million. The next step is for the Board of Governors to vote on the deal, which is expected to happen Friday. . The Missouri Tigers Defensive End and SEC Defensive player of the year is eligible for the upcoming NFL draft in May. TORONTO — Grey Cup MVP Kory Sheets is one of five Saskatchewan Roughriders named to the 2013 CFL all-star team. But the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, runners-up in last months CFL championship game, failed to place a single player on the team voted on by the Football Reporters of Canada and the leagues head coaches. The 10-8 Ticats had earlier placed seven players on the East Division all-star team. The Ticats tweeted they are the first team in league history to earn a spot in the Grey Cup without a single CFL all-star. That drew a “LOL” retweet from the Argonauts. The Ticats responded with a “..and we still ended your season. LOL!” tweet from the Hamilton team. That prompted a “and then what happened?” tweet from the Argos, complete with a photo of Saskatchewan quarterback Darian Durant kissing the Grey Cup. Calgary led all clubs with seven CFL all-stars, with running back Jon Cornish adding to a memorable season that has already netted him the leagues Most Outstanding Player and Outstanding Canadian awards. Toronto had five all-stars while Montreal had four, B.C. three, Edmonton two and Winnipeg one. In 2013, Cornish won his second straight rushing title by gaining 1,813 yards, fourth-highest in league history. He also led the league and set a Calgary franchise record with 2,157 yards from scrimmage. His season was marked by nine 100-yard games — including a Stamps-record five straight - and a career-best 208-yard outing Oct. 5 against Winnipeg. Sheets ran for more than 100 yards in the first six games of the season and finished tied with a franchise-best nine. In 15 games, he ran 287 times for 1,598 yards and caught 37 balls for 264 yards. The second-year Rider also ran for a Grey Cup-record 197 yards and two touchdowns to help the Roughriders thump the Ticats 45-23. Cornish was one of three unanimous all-star selections. The others were Calgary defensive end CCharleston Hughes and Montreal receiver S.ddddddddddddJ. Green. The other Stampeder all-stars were receiver Marquay McDaniel, offensive tackle Stanley Bryant, kicker Rene Paredes, punter Rob Maver and special-teams player Larry Taylor. Ricky Ray of the Argos got the nod at quarterback, with an all-star backfield of Cornish and Sheets. The receivers were Green, McDaniel, Edmontons Fred Stamps, and Saskatchewans Weston Dressler. Ray, runner-up to Cornish for Most Outstanding Player, had a record-breaking year marred only by injury and the loss to Hamilton in the Eastern final. In 10 games, Ray completed 77.2 per cent of his passes (234 of 303) to erase Dave Dickensons league record of 74 per cent. For Montreal linebacker Chip Cox and Stamps, it was a fourth all-star honours. B.C. defensive tackle Jovan Olafioye and defensive back Ryan Phillips were named all-stars for the third time. Eleven others, including Cornish and Ray, were honoured for a second time. -- CFL All-Stars (x- denotes unanimous choice) Offence Quarterback: Ricky Ray, Toronto. CLEVELAND — After 475 pitches, 20 runs and more than five hours of baseball, the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers settled this lengthy game in a most bizarre fashion: a walkoff balk. Al Alburquerques bases-loaded balk in the 13th inning Wednesday gave the Indians an 11-10 victory over Detroit. “I dont even know where to start with that game,” Indians right-fielder David Murphy said. “I dont know if that was a baseball game or a marathon combined with a circus.” Murphy tied the game that took 5 hours, 16 minutes in the ninth with a two-run homer off Joe Nathan Alex Avilas two-out homer in the top of the 13th put Detroit ahead, but the Indians scored twice for their second walkoff win in the three-game sweep. Mike Aviles led off with a single against Phil Coke (0-1) and took second on Michael Bourns sacrifice. After Asdrubal Cabrera was hit by a pitch, Michael Brantley lined a single to left for his fourth hit that scored Aviles, who slid home before Rajai Davis throw. After a groundout, Alburquerque relieved and pinch-hitter Yan Gomes was walked intentionally to load the bases. Ryan Raburn took the first pitch for a ball. As Alburquerque went into his set position, he appeared to move his leg and glove and then stopped. Indians manager Terry Francona couldnt remember a game ending on a balk, but he knew Alburquerque committed one. “It was definitely a balk,” he said. “If they hadnt have called it we would have went out there and argued.” The Tigers put up no argument. “He just went to come set and he stopped and it was pretty blatant,” Avila said. “There wasnt any controversy about that one.” According to STATS, the game-ending balk is the first since July 4, 2011, when the Royals Aaron Crow committed one in the ninth inning against the White Sox. Its also the first walkoff balk in extra innings since June 16, 2011, when the Mets D.J. Carrasco did it against the Braves. Josh Tomlin (3-1), the Indians ninth pitcher, worked the final three innings. Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera and manager Brad Ausmus were ejected in the sixth inning by plate umpire Tim Timmons for arguing balls and strikes. Raburn raised his arms in victory after the balk was called and the Indians rushed from the dugout to mob Cabrera at the plate. Cabrera had been hit on the knee by Cokes pitcher and spent several moments on the ground before going to first. The Indians bid to win in the 10th ended when Davis throw to the plate got Lonnie Chisenhall, who was trying to score on Bourns flyball. Zach McAllister allowed four runs in the first and didnt retire a batter in the third. Having already used seven relievers, Francona had no choice but to call on Tomlin in the 11th even though the right-hander was scheduled to start Thursday in Baltimore. Asked how long Tomlin would have pitched, Francona said, “Till we won or lost. There was nobody else.” “I dont know if Ive ever done that before, but I was ready,” Tomlin. “They asked me about the 10th inning if I could pitch, so I ran and got my spikes.” A roster move to add Thursdays starter will be made before that game. Max Scherzer allowed seven runs in seven innings. He gave up one run in the first, five in the second and another in the third, but blanked the Indians over his final four innings of work. The right-hander gave up 12 hits and threw 113 pitches. Scherzer, last seasons AL Cy Young winner, had allowed six total runs in his previous six starts, all wins, over 39 innings. A dropped throw by Cabrera helped Detroit break a 7-all tie in the eighth. J.D. Martinez, who hit a two-run homer in the first, had three RBIs. Victor Martinez was 3 for 6 with two RBIs, including a solo homer in the third. Chisenhall hit a solo homer for Cleveland. McAllister allowed five runs in two innings. NOTES: Tigers OF Torii Hunter had the day off. … Indians DH Jason Giambi played for the first time since May 3 when he strained his right calf. He came off the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. … Victor Martinez is 8 for 13 with seven RBIs lifetime against McAllister. … Bench coach Gene Lamont ran the team after Ausmus was ejected. … McAllister is 0-4 with a 9.51 ERA in his last six starts. Niese pitched seven steady innings on a rainy Tuesday night and Daniel Murphy had three hits to lead New York to a 6-1 victory over the Phillies.HOUSTON — Dwight Howard didnt think he was aggressive enough in Houstons two losses to Sacramento this season and vowed to attack from the beginning when the Rockets faced the Kings on Wednesday night. Howards plan worked. He had 17 points and 10 rebounds by halftime on the way to a 26-point night to help the Rockets cruise to their third straight win, a 119-98 victory over the Kings. Howard also had 13 rebounds and four blocks and James Harden added 24 points and nine assists before the pair went to the bench for the fourth quarter. “The last couple of games against those guys, I didnt come out aggressive like I needed to on both ends of the floor,” Howard said. “Ive been looking at some film and I wanted to get off to a better start. Its not just about scoring. Its defence and things like that.” The Rockets took the lead midway through the first quarter and didnt trail again. The Kings struggled after losing top scorers Rudy Gay and DeMarcus Cousins to injuries before halftime. Gay, who tied a career high with 41 points on Tuesday night, injured his left Achilles tendon in the first quarter and Cousins sprained his left ankle in the second. Sacramento coach Mike Malone didnt have any more information on the injuries after the game and said that theyd know more on Thursday. “It was a big loss to lose both of those guys in the first half,” Malone said. “Unfortunately, those other guys that were able to play didnt respond. We got our (tails) kicked tonight and were a no-excuse team … so the fact that we guarded no one tonight has nothing to do with them not being able to play in the second half.” Derrick Williams scored 22 points with 11 rebounds and Isaiah Thomas added 20 points for the Kings. Houston led by 15 points entering the fourth quarter and padded its lead with Harden and Howard relaxing on the bench in their warm-up shirts. They used a 15-3 spurt in the first 4 1/2 minutes of the fourth to make it 103-76. Sacramento missed eight shots, including three layups in that span, and its only points came on free throws by Williams. The Rockets were up by nine points early in the third quarter before scoring 10 straight points to stretch their advantage to 65-46. Chandler Parsoons and Patrick Beverley both had 3-pointers in that stretch.dddddddddddd Jimmer Fredette made a 3-pointer that cut Houstons lead to 11 points with about eight minutes left in the second quarter. Cousins went down on Sacramentos next possession when he was knocked to the court on a hard foul by Beverley as he drove to the basket. Beverley stood over him for a second while he was down and Beverley received a technical. Cousins entered the game leading the team in scoring (23.1) and rebounding (11.7). He scored just two points before getting hurt, snapping a streak of 30 straight games with at least 10 points. The Rockets used a 6-2 spurt after that to extend their lead to 44-29. Sacramento got within eight two times after that in the second quarter, but Howard scored six points with two alley-oop dunks in the last 1 1/2 minutes of the first half to help the Rockets lead 55-44 at the break. The Kings were up by five points early before Houston used a 14-5 run to take a 21-17 lead with about three minutes left in the first quarter. Gay, who entered the game averaging 20.2 points, was injured at the beginning of that run, which was powered by eight points from Harden. Houston coach Kevin McHale was impressed with Hardens work on Wednesday night. “He started getting to the rim,” McHale said. “I thought we were settling for a lot and playing East and West. We told them to get to the hole and put pressure on the basket and they did.” Gay has started all 21 games for the Kings since being traded from Toronto on Dec. 9. Aaron Gray received a flagrant foul soon after that when he grabbed Harden as he was heading to the basket. Harden made both free throws as part of an 8-2 run that put the Rockets up 29-22 at the end of the first. Omri Casspi added 20 points and tied a career-high with 12 rebounds and Parsons added 19 points with 10 rebounds. NOTES: Houstons Terrence Jones missed his second straight game with a deep thigh bruise and Ronnie Brewer sat out with a sore calf. … Sacramentos Quincy Acy and Harden both received technical fouls on the same play in the third quarter. … Thomas has made at least one 3-pointer in 35 straight games, tying the fourth-longest streak in franchise history. Prince Fielder could have vetoed the blockbuster swap of All-Star players that sent him to the Texas Rangers less than two years after signing his big deal with Detroit. The slugging first baseman decided to take the fresh start with a new team. "Obviously, its another good team, " Fielder said Thursday, a day after being sent to Texas for second baseman Ian Kinsler. “I didnt think it was going to be a bad thing and plus, most of all, I thought it was going to be good for everyone. I just wanted everyone to be happy.” Fielder was only two seasons into the $214 million, nine-year contract he signed with Detroit before the 2012 season, when the Rangers were also a suitor. Their offer was nowhere close to what the five-time All-Star got then. While playing all 324 regular-season games for the Tigers the past two seasons, Fielder hit .295 with 55 home runs and 214 RBIs. But his 25 homers this year were his fewest over a full season, and he didnt drive in a run in 11 post-season games before Detroit lost the AL championship series to Boston in six games. “It was cool. The season was fine. It is what it is bro,” Fielder said during a brief conference call with Rangers beat writers. “You cant take it back. Everything is cool. We got to the playoffs. Unfortunately we didnt get where we wanted to go.” The Rangers plan to formally introduce Fielder in a news conference Monday. Fielder provides Texas manager Ron Washington with a middle-of-the-order threat in a lineup that still includes Adrian Beltre and Alex Rios, filling one of the teams primary off-season wants even before baseballs winter meetings. “It gives us some direction the rest of our off-season,” general manager Jon Daniels said late Wednesday night. Fielder is a .286 career hitter with 285 homers and 870 RBIs in 1,322 games with Milwaukee (2005-11) and Detroit (2012-13). In 13 career games as an opponent at Rangers Ballpark, he hit .265 with four homers and 15 RBIs. Before Fielder went to Detroit, he travelled to Dallas to meet with Daniels and other Rangers officials. Daniels said that was helpful this week when making a decision in a trade that came together quickly. That also played into Fielders quick decision to accept it. “It definitely didnt hurt. Everybody was real nice, and I liked the guys,” Fielder said. “It definitely will be different. Its definitely going to be new. Yeah, Ill take it, I guess, a fresh start.” As for the Texas heat, the big first baseman spent some of his preteen years living in the Dallas area and isnt concerned about playing every day in the summer months. “I kind of like it. Obviously it keeps you loose,” he said. “I play every day, the heat actually is good just to be able to get muscles loose, especially later in the season as the body starts to get tired. For me, whenever its warm, Im just loose and better actually. Its definitely going to be hot, but its not going to be a problem.” .J. — The New York Giants are not only back in the playoff hunt with a four-game winning streak, theyre calling the plays that get them those wins. HOUSTONUFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos will meet for the final fight in their heavyweight trilogy Saturday night in UFC 166. And whatever the outcome, Velasquez said he wont fight Dos Santos again — at least not anytime soon. “I think it will be settled for a while,” Velasquez said. “I wont say that I wont fight him in five years or so because that could be a possibility.” But he does enjoy the rivalry theyve had over the last couple of years. “Its good to have an opponent like that thats always pushing you to get better,” Velasquez said. Velasquez reclaimed the belt from Dos Santos with a decisive unanimous decision in UFC 155 in December. It was the first loss for Dos Santos since November 2007. Velasquez is expecting Dos Santos to take a different approach in this one. “I think his biggest adjustments will have to be his pace — not just backing up,” Velasquez said. “I think him being more aggressive. I think the only thing different he could do is to be more aggressive.” Dos Santos said he made a lot of mistakes in the last fight and hes studied them to correct the problems before Saturdays bout. “The past fights are going to help me a lot because I learned from that,” Dos Santos said. “I think the biggest challenge is going to be to stop him. He walks forward all the time and we have to take care of that.” Dos Santos (15-3-0) took the title from Velasquez in the first meeting in November 2011 with a knockout in 64 seconds. It remains the only career loss for Velasquez, who is 12-1-0. “If you look at my UFC fights, most of them I knock them out very fast and it happened with him, too,” Dos Santos said. “The second fight he showed a little bit of who he is. He put on some pressure, made me tired and won the fight. Thats what he does very well. Now were going to see which one works better, my style or his style.” Velasquez is looking to guard against Dos Santos landing that one big punch because he believes thats the only way Dos Santos can win. Seven of Dos Santoss victories in the UFC have come by knockout, which is tied for second-most in heavyweight history. “I think thats the case, landing that one punch,” Velasquez said when asked how Dos Santos could win. “Weve got to use our game plan to fight him. Just be aggressive and in his face all the time and just take that away from him.” The Brazilian-born Dos Santos is a big fan of boxing and hopes Saturdays fight helps this trilogy live up to some of the fabled trilogies in boxing history. “I want to be one of those,” he said. “Years after this fight people will be talking about us, but I want people to talk about Junior Dos Santos more.” The co-main event at the Toyota Center, home the NBAs Houston Rockets, will feature former Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier against Roy Nelson in a heavyweight matchup. Cormier is undefeated and Nelson is one of six fighters in UFC history to knock out two or more opponents in less than a minute each. Also on the card is UFC lightweight contender and former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez against former Ultimate Fighter winner Diego Sanchez. Gabriel Gonzaga takes on Shawn Jordan in a heavyweight fight, and flyweights John Dodson and Darrell Montague round out the competition. It may not be in Toronto, but Komarov seems to have his sights set on a return to the NHL next season. The 27-year-old had his first (and long-desired) taste of the league in 2013 – calling it “probably the best time of my life” – before returning to Dynamo of the KHL last summer for reasons both financial and otherwise. “I want to get back,” Komarov said of the NHL. “Its a big goal for me for next season. [But] Im going to see how its going to work out. Dynamo is playing pretty good right now so its like everything is good there too, but I really enjoyed it in Toronto. It was really good.” Komarov played in 42 games with the Leafs and was the pesky, agitating force the organization hoped hed become when they drafted him in the sixth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. But with the lure of a hefty one-year contract in Moscow and more opportunity ahead of the Olympics this winter, Komarov chose to leave Toronto after just one season. “No hard feelings against Toronto,” he said. “I really enjoyed it. Everything was good, but Dynamo gave me a really good offer.” More money than a cap-strapped Leafs brass was prepared or even able to pay this past summer. But just as important as the dollars gained by returning to Russia was the chance to play big minutes with a powerhouse squad in Dynamo. And with keen hopes of representing Finland for the first time on the Olympic stage here in Sochi, Komarov wanted to ensure his best was on display as often as possible. “I need to play a lot to make this team for Olympics and I knew Im going to get a lot of ice-time in Dynamo,” said Komarov followwing practice with a trimmed down Finnish Olympic squad, NHL players yet to arrive on this day.dddddddddddd. “You go in the NHL and play on the fourth line – five, six minutes – its hard. I wanted to make 100 per cent sure that Im going to make the team. “Maybe the contract situation was a little bit [a reason] too. It was a hard decision, like I want to play in NHL, but what happened happened.” Though he is quite at home in the KHL, where hes played for four seasons now, Komarov certainly enjoyed the upgrade in lifestyle associated with the NHL. From the lavish hotels to comfortable charter planes to do-it-all training staffs to visits in New York, Montreal and Boston, the NHL just has more to offer than the league in Russia, up-and-coming as it is. “Its like the best thing that can happen to a hockey player to be there,” said Komarov of playing in the NHL, remaining in touch with current Leafs Phil Kessel, Frazer McLaren, Tyler Bozak and Nikolai Kulemin. “Its so nice.” Toronto was also a more desirable resting place for his Finnish girlfriend. Unlike Komarov, who speaks four languages including Russian, Swedish and Finnish, his better half has nothing to fall back on as far as communication is concerned, this in a place where English is rarely spoken or understood. “She liked Toronto really much, did whatever she wanted by herself there, but in Moscow she always needs me around,” said Komarov, noting the challenge of simply traveling around the city without knowing the Russian language. An unrestricted free agent this summer, Komarov is open to returning to the Leafs and the city of Toronto, but he appears more focused on simply getting back into the NHL however possible. Yet to receive any offers he remains hopeful about his prospects with a fallback plan of good money and opportunity in the KHL. “Theyve got good money in KHL, but its not all about the money either,” he said. “NHL is the best league you can play in.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

DUBLIN, Ireland — Brian ODriscoll put on a show to remember in his last home test by spearheading Ireland to a 46-7 win over Italy at Lansdowne Road on Saturday and setting up their Six Nations closer in Paris next week as the title decider. While history counts against Ireland in Paris, where they havent won since 2000, ODriscoll said they have the momentum and ability to win their second Six Nations in 29 years at the expense of France. Ireland leads the standings with a points differential of plus 81, while next-best England, hosting Wales on Sunday, was at plus 21. “We go to France with huge positivity,” he said. “Were capable of doing great things and we have to start next week by trying to win a second championship with this unit of players.” ODriscolls final bow at home in an illustrious 15-year international career was his 140th test, making him world rugbys most capped player. He played for only 62 minutes, walking off to a standing ovation, but had a hand in three of Irelands four tries by then. After he left, Ireland poured in three more tries as Italy tired in having to make more than 200 tackles. Bemused by all the attention and embarrassed to be named man of the match, he addressed the packed crowd and the meaning of the day finally got to him. “I feel really humbled by the reaction today,” he said, misty-eyed. "It seems a bit of a joke to get man of the match for 60 minutes. “Ive loved my time playing in this jersey and unfortunately it does have to come to an end, and Im glad Ive got to go out at home with a big win.” It was a tribute to ODriscoll that he produced his best game of the championship in an emotionally charged atmosphere that ramped up when he led the team out. For the hour he spent in the game, he was in the middle of all the main moments. His no-look flick over his left shoulder sent flyhalf Jonathan Sexton, on the loop around, scampering past the bewitched defence and to the try-line just six minutes in. Coach Joe Schmidt called ODriscoll a magician. The man himself said, “I take as much satisfaction in setting up tries as scoring them, I have to these days, I dont tend to get too many myself anymore.” The tackling on both sides took a quick toll: Tighthead prop Martin Castrogiovanni, extending his Italy caps record to 105, walked off with broken ribs, then Ireland scrumhalf Conor Murray with nausea. Italy contributed to the occasion with backplay that was genuinely threatening. When Ireland accidentally conceded possession on halfway, Italys attack appeared to die when the ball was jolted by Ireland wing Andrew Trimble. But ODriscoll booted the ball straight to Italy wing Leonardo Sarto, who blasted off. Sarto ran through fullback Rob Kearney and inside his winger brother Dave for the first try Ireland has conceded at home in the championship. After replacement scrumhalf Eoin Reddan almost scored from a solo dart, Sexton regained the lead for Ireland with a penalty for 10-7. With Italy on the ascendency heading toward the interval, it lost possession on the Ireland 22 and the hosts counterattacked. Rob Kearney surged to the Italy 22, Ireland went through the phases, and finally ODriscoll unlocked the defence in a crowd with a basketball pass to Trimble, who was too close to the line to be stopped. Ireland went to the break 17-7 up. Irelands third try came in the 53rd, a tap penalty leading to prop Cian Healy scoring with a helpful shove from Paul OConnell, then walking straight to the bench. ODriscoll found himself in space but, too slow to have a go, he ran across field looking for support, only to be levelled. After regaining his wind, he then featured in Sextons second try with another offload, a reverse flick to Rob Kearney, who fed brother Dave, who found Sexton inside. That was enough for Sexton, whose Racing Metro club thought he couldnt play with an injured thumb, and ODriscoll, who was replaced by Fergus McFadden, who scored a try as Italy ran out of gas. Further tries to replacement forwards Sean Cronin and Jack McGrath further overwhelmed Italy. Thats not a comment on the suspension that banished the Portland Winterhawks general manager and coach from his Western Hockey League teams bench for most of the 2012-13 season. Its just a statement on who he is. “(Coaching) is in your blood when the pre-season starts until it finishes at the end of the year,” he said. “Its just kind of that own ownership, being able to coach, being able to compete, and you miss that when youre away from it, for sure, and its a good feeling to be back.” Heading into Saturdays home game against the Kamloops Blazers, he has guided the defending WHL champions to a 3-3-1 record. Johnston was suspended last November after a league investigation determined the Winterhawks provided improper, undisclosed benefits that included free flights for players and parents. The team, which was also fined $200,000 and lost several draft picks, and league disputed the allegations publicly but Johnston ultimately accepted his punishment. He didnt get mad. He got busy, even though he was prohibited from going into the teams office or having any contact with players. “I tried to focus on what I could do rather than what I couldnt do, and I could still evaluate older players or our team for the future, and I could evaluate players who were on our list and determine if they were ready to fit into our program or were a ways away,” he said from Portland in a recent phone interview. “I couldnt watch our team, but I could watch the other Western league teams.” Johnston watched games online and also ventured to numerous rinks to scout Winterhawk hopefuls playing at lower levels. He also attended major coaching clinics in Burnaby, B.C., where he was a speaker and attended sessions to get insight on his profession. “Any time youre not coaching, like summer hockey, I always try and see if theres some way I can improve and try and study what other teams are doing, what other coaches are doing, take a look at our team, the organization, to see if theres any way to get an edge, to improve in what youre doing from that perspective,” he said. Johnston, a Dartmouth, N.S., native who is in his early 50s, has been trying to get an edge on the bench since he stopped playing university hockey and got into coaching while in his 20s. He joined the Winterhawks after serving in the NHL for almost a decade as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks and Los Angeles Kings. He has also won several medals with Canadian junior and senior-age national teams and served as an assistant with Canadas 1998 Oympic team in Nagano. His resume includes Canadian college coaching experience with the Camrose Kodiaks, a tenure with the University of New Brunswick and a stint as an assistant at the University of Calgary, where he obtained a masters degree in coaching science. He also co-authored the book, “Simply The Best — Insights and Strategies From Great Hockey Coaches.” After joining the Winterhawks early in the 2008-09 season, he guided the team to the playoffs for thee first time in four years and built them into the powerhouse that won the WHL title last season.dddddddddddd Former assistant Travis Green filled in as head coach before taking a job as head coach of the Canucks new AHL affiliate in Utica, N.Y. Although he was exiled from the club, Johnston took considerable satisfaction from the accomplishment. “Every year, we were making strides, we were taking steps and then last year we were able to break through,” he said. “I was extremely proud of the coaching staff, the players and the whole team on how we handled the steps that wed been through the last four to five years — how they progressed, how they developed and how they finally pushed over that hurdle to win a WHL championship.” Now Johnston is setting his sights on a possible repeat and another berth in the MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament with the bulk of the roster that prevailed last season. The Winterhawks lost seven players to graduation and promotion to the pro ranks. Defenceman Seth Jones, the fourth overall pick in this years NHL draft, has moved on to the Nashville Predators, while winger Ty Rattie, a St. Louis Blues prospect who placed third in the WHLs scoring race with 48 goals and 62 assists, is now playing for Chicago Wolves of the AHL. Defenceman Tyler Wotherspoon is also in the AHL, toiling for Calgarys affiliate in Abbotsford, B.C. Portland still has 15 holdovers from the championship club. Among the returnees are Brendan Leipsic, who had 49 goals and 120 points last season. “Its going to be challenging, its going to be difficult,” Johnston said of the effort to repeat. "But it wasnt easy to do what we did the last couple years. There are a lot of good teams in the league. Its a well-coached league, a well-run league and every season there are five or six teams that are playing at a level where anybody could win it. “This year it looks like its even more wide open than that. But weve got a good nucleus back, weve got a good core group and I believe that well have a chance to play (for a title). Well be right there.” And so will Johnston. He declined to discuss his suspension in detail, and a team spokesman noted the organization is moving on from it. Johnston also declined to indicate whether the Winterhawks have reviewed or changed their recruiting procedures in wake of the suspension. But the club is treading carefully now that Johnston has been reinstated. “Were making sure that everything we do is in conjunction with what is being allowed by the league,” said Johnston. “So we are making sure that (with) any grey area, any questions we have, we are checking with the league office first to make sure were in accordance with exactly how everything should be done.” That way, Johnston, a self-described career coach, can focus on guiding his charges without fear of sanctions and a hiatus that, despite his efforts to keep busy, still caused obvious discomfort. “This is what I do, what I love to do,” he said. “It means a lot to be back coaching.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

There was nothing second-rate about their performance, but second place is where Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir find themselves following their short program in the ice dance event on Sunday. Following a pattern that has become all too familiar for the defending Olympic champions, the American team of Meryl Davis and Charlie White bested Virtue and Moir by a margin of 2.56 points at the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi to take top spot. Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov fed off the pro-Russian crowd and tallied a 73.04, putting them in bronze-medal position heading into Mondays free dance (10:00 a.m. ET, streaming live at cbc.ca/olympics). Virtue and Moir, skating to Ella Fitzgeralds Dream a Little Dream of Me, put their slip-up in the team event far in the rear view mirror with a seemingly flawless performance, carving perfect turns, nailing their rotational lifts and staying in sync during their twizzle sequences. As the music ended and they struck their final pose, Moir let out a triumphant “Yes!”, knowing that the skate represented one of their best performances of the season. Their joy was short-lived though, as their score of 76.33 came in below their season best score of 77.59 at the Grand Prix Finals in December, leaving the door wide open for the reigning world champions Davis and White, who set a new short dance world record with a score of 78.89. Canadas other medal hopefuls, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, skated a strong routine that earned them a 65.93, good for seventh place. The third Canadian entry, featuring Toronto-born Alexandra Paul and Barries Mitchell Islam, skated a light, airy and up-tempo routine, marred only by a small bobble on the opening twizzle by Paul. The 2010 world junior silver medallists finished with a score of 55.91, putting them in 18th place. Virtue and Moir have some work to do to catch the leaders, but they were still happy with how the day unfolded. “It was a really fun performance,” the 24-year-old Virtue told CBC Sports. “Obviously, you are here to defend your title. You also want to have fun. You still love what you do.” Moir, 26, said that it was this type of performance that has kept them going for the last four years. “Its definitely the reason we keep going. To be on this stage representing Canada, its a huge thing for Tessa and I to be part of a fantastic Olympic Canadian team.” Moir added that they still get plenty of enjoyment out of competitions like these. “We love what we do. We love skating together. We have a lot of special moments, and that was one of them.” Sundays short dance marked the third head-to-head battle between the Canadians and Americans at these Olympics. Davis and White beat Virtue and Moir by three points in the short dance portion of the team event early in the Games, and repeated the feat in the free dance portion with a seven-point victory. The two rivals bring contrasting styles to the sport. Virtue and Moir boast an elegant and flowing style, and a sense of unison that no other team can match, thanks to nearly 17 years as an on-ice tandem. Davis and White, on the other hand, typically display a faster and bolder technique than the Canadian duo, albeit one with arguably less precision. Virtue and Moir have laid claim to an Olympic gold medal in Vancouver, two world titles and six Canadian championships during their careers, but theyve consistently come up short against the American pair over the past two seasons, including at the 2013 world championship in Virtues hometown of London, Ont. What makes the rivalry even more peculiar, if not slightly peculiar, is the fact they share not only the same training facility in Canton, Mich., but also the same coach and choreographer, Russian-born Marina Zoueva. Zoueva has coached Davis and White for the past 14 years, and has been working with Virtue and Moir for 10 years. While they arent close friends with the Americans off the ice, Virtue and Moir have often said that they have a good relationship with them and that both sides enjoy the friendly rivalry. Another storyline that has surrounded the athletes since the team event, an alleged judging scandal, has fortunately faded into the background. During the opening weekend, the French sports publication LEquipe had reported that the American and Russian judges were conspiring against Canada in order to assure a gold medal for Russia in the team competition and gold for the U.S., in ice dancing. Despite being at the centre of the controversy, Virtue and Moir insist that the rumours havent affected their focus on or off the ice. Bolt, who false-started in South Korea last month to end his hopes of retaining his world title, shaved 0.03 seconds off his previous fastest time this year — 9.88 seconds at Monaco in June — on a warm, still night. “It was a poor start,” said Bolt, the world and Olympic record-holder. “I kind of lost concentration and just went through the line. It was OK, I suppose, but I could have done better, especially with the weather like that.” Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, B.C., was third in the shot put with a throw of 21.40 metres. The world silver medallist finished behind Americans Reese Hoffa, who threw 21.73, and Christian Cantwell (21.55). Kim Collins of Saint Kitts and Nevis ran a season-best 10.01 seconds to finish second in the 100, ahead of Trinidads Richard Thompson at 10.03. There was standing room only at the 61st Boris Hanzekovic Memorial, where Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and club official Emilio Butragueno arrived in time to see Bolt run. Madrid begins its Champions League campaign at Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday. “It was wonderful, the crowd here,” Bolt said. "I loved that they were excited and that the fans come up to me. “Im always grateful for that.” However, security had trouble controlling the crowd as “Boltmania” took hold when he celebrated with delirious fans. “Its not as bad in Jamaica, where they see me every day,” Bolt said, laughing. The commotion extended to his news conference, which was cut short when too many journalists tried to force their way into the room. The apppearance of local favourite Blanka Vlasic in the womens high jump also delighted the home crowd, although she eventually succumbed to world champion Anna Chicherova.dddddddddddd “It will be difficult to improve this season,” Vlasic said. “Im delighted that the fans were treated to a spectacular meet because I practically grew up in this stadium.” In the mens 110-metre hurdles, Cubas world-record holder Dayron Robles beat world champion Jason Richardson for the second straight race. Robles finished first at the world championships but was disqualified for impeding Liu Xiang of China, giving Richardson of the U.S. the gold. Richardson, who was also beaten by Robles at the Weltklasse meet in Zurich last week, set a personal best of 13.04 seconds, but Robles won in 13.00. David Oliver of the U.S. was third in 13.20. Carmelita Jeter took the womens 100 in 11.00. The American was pushed hard to the line by Schillonie Calvert of Jamaica, who finished in 11.13, with Bulgarias Ivet Lalova third in 11.33. “Hopefully Ill come back next year. Ive enjoyed myself so much so far,” Jeter said. Calvert won the 200 with a personal-best 22.55 seconds, leading a 1-2 Jamaica finish. Sherone Simpson was second in 22.95, with Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie of the Bahamas third in 22.97. In the womens 100 hurdles, world champion Sally Pearson followed her success at the Weltklasse in Zurich to claim the gold in 12.67. “Relief more than anything. I came into this meeting a bit tired,” Pearson said. Lashawn Merrit of the United States won the mens 400 in 45.20 seconds after a slow start, finishing ahead of compatriot Greg Nixon (45.73) and Trinidads Renny Quow (45.95). Jamaicas Novlene Williams Mills set a meet record of 50.31 seconds to win the womens 400. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

MIAMI — Cam Newton threw a long desperation pass that fell incomplete on the final play of the first half Friday night, and thats the closest he came to reaching the end zone. The top pick of the NFL draft was shut out in his first exhibition-game start, and Newtons Carolina Panthers lost to the Miami Dolphins 20-10. Newton played the entire first half, when the Panthers (1-1) managed only three first downs, had the ball for less than eight minutes and fell behind 17-0. Newton went 7 for 14 for 66 yards, and he ran four times for 18 yards. “With this performance tonight, Im not pleased with it at all,” Newton said. “We just couldnt find a way to stay on track. Three-and-out is not acceptable. We put our defence in some lose-lose situations.” Carolina crossed midfield for the first time when Newton ran for seven yards on the next-to-last play of the half. “As a whole offence, we didnt do the things we needed to do,” new Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “We didnt protect the quarterback, we didnt run good routes and then we didnt make good decisions, either.” Reggie Bush, another former Heisman Trophy winner, played for the first time since joining the Dolphins and totalled 81 yards from scrimmage in three series. He ran eight times for 48 yards, including a 17-yard burst up the middle, and caught two passes for 33 yards. Soon he had the crowd chanting, “Reg-gie! Reg-gie!” “I wanted to make an impression with this team and the fans,” Bush said. “Im all about earning respect.” Chad Henne played the entire first half and led the Dolphins to 17 points in five possessions, including 10 points in two series against Panthers reserves. Henne went 15 for 24 for 194 yards, and he had a 17-yard scramble for Miami (2-0). “Chad did a great job,” Bush said. “He took control of the game. He looked like a really good quarterback.” The Dolphins went 1-7 at home last season, and Henne was booed during a recent scrimmage on the same field. Spectators had little to complain about in the opening half, however, as they watched the Dolphins outgain the Panthers 301-90. “Its good to get a win at home and start a run that way,” Henne said. “Winning at home is pretty important to us. Were trying to build tradition here.” Charlotte did sit out six starters, including four on offence. But a sputtering offence was nothing new for the Panthers, who ranked last in the NFL in points and yards in 2010, when a 2-14 record gave them the chance to take Newton in the draft. The crowd was likely the smallest he has played before since his days at Blinn College. Announced attendance was 54,157, but the actual turnout was about 30,000. Jimmy Clausen, who started last week for Carolina, entered the game to begin the second half and went 9 for 15 for 69 yards. The Panthers scored their touchdown in the fourth quarter after Miami backup quarterback Matt Moore lost a fumble. Rivera declined to say when hell decide whether to start Newton or Clausen in the opener Sept. 11 against Arizona. “They were efficient at best,” Rivera said. “They made some good reads, made some good decisions but missed a couple of throws. That was disappointing.” In two games, Newton has yet to lead the Panthers to a touchdown. When asked if he had done enough to be the No. 1 quarterback, he said, “No sir. Im not going to worry about whos the starting quarterback and whos not. Im just going to worry about myself, as a whole, getting better.” Newtons first pass went to Greg Olsen for 12 yards, but the Panthers were then forced to punt, and they totalled only 10 plays on their next three possessions. Miami rookie Daniel Thomas carried 12 times for 52 yards. Brandon Marshall played three series and caught five passes for 46 yards. The second possession by the Dolphins first-teamers resulted in a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown drive late in the first quarter. The final yard proved the toughest — Miami ran up the middle three times for no gain before Lex Hilliard scored on a fourth-down leap. In the second quarter, Henne led another 12-play scoring drive against Panthers reserves. It ended with a 39-yard field goal by Dan Carpenter. The Dolphins got the ball back with 2:03 left in the half, and Henne moved them 63 yards for a score in four plays, the last a 4-yard run by Thomas. Notes: Charlottes running backs totalled 46 yards rushing. … Fifteen players caught passes for Miami. … Third-string linebacker Thomas Williams had seven solo tackles, including one on special teams. Its the victory celebration that again gave him fits. Keselowski topped all the fields Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, including a dominant run in his Nationwide Series victory. Keselowski also led the speed charts during both Sprint Cup practices. Throw in the pole for the Nationwide race and that made the Team Penske driver a neat 4 for 4. Simply perfect. “Well a hell of a Saturday,” Keselowski said. His only hiccup came when he dropped the American flag out of his No. 22 Ford. The flag rested on the track before it was retrieved by an official to let the victory celebration continue. “It was really windy and my hands been sore,” he said. “I took my hand off the flag for the second and the wind ripped it out. It wasnt one of my prouder moments.” Keselowski still needs work on his victory laps. He needed four stitches to close a wound he received during his Victory Lane celebration in the Sprint Cup race at Kentucky. He tried to open the bottle of champagne by hitting it against a podium, and the bottle broke and cut his hand. Keselowski led 153 of the 200 laps in his second Nationwide win of the season.dddddddddddd He also won at Phoenix and hasnt finished worse than third in six races this season. “I enjoy this series and feel lucky I am allowed to compete in it,” he said. He is a star off the track, as well — Keselowski appears as himself Tuesday on the “Sullivan & Son” show on TBS. Kyle Busch avoided disaster late in the race when he connected with James Buescher trying to make an outside pass and finished second. He starts on the pole for Sundays Cup race. Matt Kenseth, Kyle Larson and Chris Buescher completed the top five. Regan Smith was seventh and won $100,000 in the first event in the four-race “Dash 4 Cash” program that could award up to $1 million to a series regular. Smith, the series points leader, was presented with an oversized check on pit road and joked he wanted to make an immediate bank deposit. “We struggled in traffic more than we needed to and I guess weve got to figure that out soon because weve got a championship race here,” Smith said. “The side note today is the $100,000.” Not a bad consolation prize. RUKA, Finland — Canadians Mikael Kingsbury and Alexandre Bilodeau finished 1-2 in mens moguls on Saturday in a World Cup of freestyle skiing event. Kingsbury, from Deux-Montagnes, Que., won gold with a score of 26.93, while Bilodeau, from Montreal, took silver with 26.54. Japans Sho Endo (25.24) placed third. “Alex was going right before me and he did an amazing run with a very high score,” said Kingsbury. "I knew it would be very hard to beat that score, so I went for it. I went just a little bit faster than him and got the gold today. “Its probably the best run of my life.” Kingsbury was very pleased with his performance, especially heading toward the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, this February. “Its the perfect way to start the season, especially for an Olympic year,” said Kingsbury. “Its looking great, Im skiing great, Im in good shape, no injuries. I just want to keep it going.” Bilodeau, who won gold for Canada at the 2010 Vancouver Games, is very impressed with Kingsburys progress as a high-calibre skier. “Mikael is a great talent and he really pushed it today,” said Bilodeau. “I put the bar very high and I knew I had a very clean run, quite fast. He had to go all out.” Bilodeau was also pleased with his performance and is looking forward to fine-tuning for the Olympics. “I went very big on the top air, perfect top air. The middle section probably was one of my best middle sections ever,” said Bilodeau. “I cant wait to see the videos and to see the judges score and to analyze that with my coach.” Quebec Citys Philippe Marquis was in 10th and Montreals Pascal-Olivier Gagne was 12th. In womens moguls competition, Montreals Justine Dufour-Lapointe won silver with a score of 23.90. She lost to American Hannah Kearney (25.07) and beat out Japans Aiko Uemura (23.69). “I worked hard this summer on my jumps and it really paid off today,” said Dufour-Lapointe. “Im really stoked and happy that everything came together. Its such a good feeling to know that youve done an awesome job.” Dufour-Lapointe likes how competitive the womens moguls circuit has become leading to the Sochi Games. “This season I really feel the girls are hungry to go faster, to try and make it to the Games,” said Dufour-Lapointe. “Its really fun and nice that the sports going further. Its going to be a really good year, I think.” Montreals Chloe Dufour-Lapointe was fifth, Quebec Citys Audrey Robichaud ninth, Montreals Maxime Dufour-Lapointe 14th and Andi Naude of Penticton, B.C., came 16th. With Pettine hired on Thursday, Marrone is forced to enact the contingency plan the team began preparing once Cleveland honed in on his key assistant. “We have a plan in place,” Marrone said, in a statement released by the team. “I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Mike on becoming the Browns new head coach and thank him for all of his time and efforts with our team this past season. He did an excellent job of improving our defence, and we wish him the best.” Marrone did not reveal a timetable or list of potential candidates. Depending on whether any Bills assistants follow Pettine to Cleveland, Buffalo has several in-house assistants to consider, most notably linebackers coach Jim ONeil and defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson. ONeil has spent the past five seasons working under Pettine, including the first four with the New York Jets. Henderson is the most experienced, having split 29 years as a coach at the NFL and college levels, including stints as a defensive co-ordinator with the Detroit Lions in 2006 and Jets, 2004-05. Replacing Pettine is not something Marrone was anticipating a year after luring the former Jets defensive co-ordinator to Buffalo to become the most-high profile member of his first staff. Pettines departure is a significant blow to a defence that emerged as the Bills strength last season. And the loss has the potential of under-cutting much of the progress the Bills hoped would carry over into next season after a 6-10 finish that extended the NFLs longest active playoff drought to 14 seasons. Continuity also becomes an issue for a defence set to be led by a fourth co-ordinator in as many years. Pettine succeeded Dave Wannstedt, who was fired along with Chan Gailey and his staff a year ago. Wannstedt replaced George Edwards, who struggled during his two years as co-ordinator. Pettine, in oone season in Buffalo, played a considerable role in transforming the Bills once-porous defence into an aggressive unit that finished second in the NFL with a franchise-record 57 sacks.dddddddddddd Though the Bills were inconsistent against the run, they still finished 10th in the NFL in fewest yards allowed — Buffalos best ranking since finishing second in 2004. The Bills success on defence translated into four players earning Pro Bowl selections, including defensive tackle Marcell Dareus as a last-minute injury replacement. Also selected were defensive linemen Mario Williams and Kyle Williams and safety Jairus Byrd. In November, Pettine indicated he was in no hurry to leave Buffalo. He enjoyed the community and also wanted to continue what he began building with the Bills. Pettines approach and no-nonsense demeanour was popular among players and staff. During the Bills bye weekend off in November, Pettine and a number of assistants spent a weekend sharing a cabin in nearby Ellicottville. He also earned raves among several veterans, including Mario Williams, who led the team with 13 1/2 sacks. Pettine learned his defensive approach under Jets coach Rex Ryan. And its a style thats somewhat unique among NFL teams in placing a premium on players versatility and capability of playing several positions to confuse offences. The secondary benefited in finishing second in the NFL with 23 interceptions. The change at co-ordinator could have an effect on Byrds desire to return to Buffalo. Byrd played last season under a one-year contract after the Bills retained his rights by applying the franchise tag. The Bills have the option of tagging Byrd once more this off-season, but are also making a push to sign the player to a long-term contract. Despite initial reservations, Byrd enjoyed playing in Pettines system and working with Henderson. The defence also featured the Bills most promising youngster, linebacker Kiko Alonso, an NFL defensive rookie of the year candidate. PHILADELPHIA — A three-goal cushion was much easier for the Philadelphia Flyers to protect the second time around. Jakub Voracek scored two goals and the Flyers beat the Washington Capitals 5-2 Tuesday night for their seventh consecutive win at home. Two days after blowing a 4-1 third-period lead at Washington in a 5-4 shootout loss, the Flyers held this lead against the high-powered Capitals. “Up three, the guys talked about it and we couldnt let that happen again,” said Matt Read, who had one of the five goals. “We took it as a 0-0 game, kept them on their heels. We had to do the simple things, the smart things.” Mark Streit and Wayne Simmonds also had goals for the Flyers. Alex Ovechkin and Eric Fehr scored for Washington. “Its always hard to come back, especially in this building,” Ovechkin said. “They got the lead with two goals and they just played safe. We had our chances but we didnt score.” Steve Mason made 24 saves for Philadelphia, which evened its record at 15-15-4. The Flyers are 12-6-4 since an embarrassing 7-0 loss at home to the Capitals on Nov. 1. Theyll try to go over .500 for the first time this season Thursday night when they host Columbus. Down 2-1, the Flyers stormed back with three straight goals, including a pair on the same power play in the second period. First, Read scored his team-high 10th goal on a wrister to tie it at 2. Then Washingtons Tom Wilson received a 5-minute major and ejection for charging. Wilson sent Brayden Schenn crashing headfirst into the boards with a hit from behind. Schenn sustained an upper-body injury and didnt return, but the Flyers made the most of their 5-minute man advantage. Streit fired a one-timer from the left point past goalie Braden Holtby to make it 3-2. Voracek then slid one inside the near post 72 seconds later for a 4-2 lead. “Anytime you get a 5-minute power play, you have to make sure you get at least one,” Flyers captain Claude Giroux said. Capitals coach Adam Oates was not pleased with the call on Wilson. “Its a game-changing call which, which they call the way they think they see it,” Oates said. “I cant do anything about it. Im also mad they dont get an instigator after that, because every single time we have one of our guys hit and a guy goes across its an automatic instigator to neutralize the play.” Simmonds extended the lead to 5-2 in the third period. “We executed our game plan,” he said. After a scoreless first period, Ovechkin got the scoring started 40 seconds into the second on a power play. Nicklas Backstroms pass from the far side of the net bounced off defenceman Nicklas Grossmanns skate, trickled away from Mason and went to Ovechkin, who backhanded it in for his NHL-best 28th goal. The Flyers answered 58 seconds later when Voracek took a pass from Braydon Coburn and skated in with Giroux on a 2-on-1 break. Voracek kept the puck and fired a wrister that beat Holtby to the stick side. “I surprised myself because I never shoot,” Voracek said. “I always pass. Ive been that way since I was a kid.” Fehr gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead in the second period when he scored on a one-timer off a perfect centring pass from behind the net by Troy Brouwer. NOTES: The Capitals recalled C Casey Wellman from the AHLs Hershey Bears. Wellman had 13 points (seven goals, six assists) in 23 games. … Voracek has five goals in the last five games. … Washington had played to a shootout in its previous three games. … Simmonds snapped a 10-game drought with the goal. TSNs Jack Armstrong offers his thoughts on Andrew Bynum, Al Horford, the Toronto Raptors, the atmosphere for the Portland vs Miami game, and the long list of injured players. 1. ANDREW BYNUM (Cavs): Grow Up! Youre a professional athlete. These are your prime earning years. Dont mess it up. For the life of me I cant comprehend how guys dont realize that there is no other walk of life that theyre going to make the kind of money they make and have the fun they do being a pro athlete. Once its gone, its very difficult to recapture what you blew. Sure, maybe he has other off-court interests; youve got a long life to enjoy those. Capitalize on what youre doing now and dont be silly. Its a shame: talented guy who needs to get with the program. 2. AL HORFORD (Hawks): Significant blow to Atlantas season losing one of my favorites in the league. He was having another steady season at 18+ ppg and 8+ rpg. Thats hard to replace. Thank goodness they signed Paul Milsap (17 and 8 per game) as a free agent this past summer. Theyre going to have to ride him a bunch in the post area; hes more than capable. The nightly loss of Horford will be a big hole to fill though considering the lost Josh Smiths athleticism and scoring ability this past off-season. The Hawks are still a capable team that will be in the playoff hunt. It will just get harder to maintain that third spot in the East Standings. 3. TORONTO RAPTORS: Im afraid to snap my fingers right now for fear theyll come out of the zone theyre in at this stage. Theyve been really fun to watch and the energy, effort, and commitment to team has been top-notch. Ive got my fingers crossed it continues; its been an enjoyable stretch of hoops to say the least. The Raptors have a really difficult stretch of games coming up however, take a good look at the schedule. The travel will be frequent and the rest/prep time will be minimal. The true test for this group will be whether they can handle some of the adversity thats ahead. If they play the way theyre playing right now, they can hang with anyone. Theres still plenty of time for GM Masai Ujiri to evaluate his team and make decisions in a calculated, big-picture way to determine whether he wants to buy, hold or sell. You need to see guys get put through the ringer a good bit to see what youve got and just as important you need to evaluate what each team in your conference has and doesnt have to determine how you want to build your eventual contending team. 4. PORTLAND/MIAMI: Not sure if you caught the Heat/Blazers game on Saturday night or even caught the highlights but wow! The energy in the arena in Portland, one of the three best playing atmospheres in the NBA (OKC and Golden State are the other two), was off the charts. The action on the court was equally good. Sometimes when youre around pro sports you can get a bit cynical once in a while. When you see the level of passion and love for the sport and competition that both teams had it gives you goose bumps. The great teams and great players have incredible pride and a wonderful makeup. Thanks to the players on both teams for giving folks their moneys worth. 5. INJURIES: Last week we had Russell Westbrook and Al Horford added to the long list of elite players with significant injuries this year. There are a lot of theories as to why its happening. Ill just say this: Im firmly convinced that players are overtraining and not allowing their bodies enough rest/recovery time. In addition, many players hire their own workout guys in the off-season with their own theories/approaches that tend to differ from what they hear from their teams. I dont like that pattern. Im a huge believer in perfect practice makes perfect. When you train improperly or utilize varying training methods at different times youre exposing yourself to greater harm. In season, teams need to be more conscious of reducing the amount of time players spend on their feet. Its all about quality vs. quantity. Am I a bit concerned? Yes. Balance and moderation have got to be looked at more rather than obsessive overkill. Dont mistake activity for achievement! . An excellent start from Drew Hutchison and the return of Jose Bautista helped provide a little breathing room in the divisional race while ending a three-game losing skid at the same time. LOUIS — St.INDIANAPOLIS — Drew Brees record-setting season has earned the New Orleans quarterback the 2011 Associated Press NFL Offensive Player of the Year award. Brees shattered Dan Marinos 27-year-old mark by passing for 5,476 yards, and his 468 completions broke Peyton Mannings 2010 record of 450. Brees finished the season completing 71.6 per cent of his passes, breaking his own 2009 NFL record (70.6). He also surpassed 300 yards passing for sevenn straight games and 13 times during the season, both beating league marks he already held.dddddddddddd Brees, the 2008 top offensive player, received 43 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL. Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers got the other seven votes. Thanks to Brees brilliance, the Saints set several single-season records, including offensive yards with 7,474 and first downs with 416. SURPRISE, Ariz. – Russell Wilson is getting on the diamond again. The Texas Rangers expect Seattles Super Bowl-winning quarterback to participate in a team workout and then be in uniform for a Cactus League game when Wilson visits camp Monday. Wilson tweeted last week his plans to visit the camp. The Rangers selected Wilson from the Colorado Rockies in the Triple-A portion of baseballs December draft at the winter meetings. After playing football and baseball at North Carolina State, Wilson played parts of the 2010 and 2011 seasons in Colorados organization The second baseman hit .229 with five homers in 93 professional games, none above the Class A level. He then transferred to Wisconsin to play football. He just finished his second NFL season with the Seahawks, with a win earlier this month over Denver in the Super Bowl. Theyre also making plays — and Frank Kaminsky came up two huge ones to beat No. 15 Iowa on Saturday. Kaminsky had 21 points and a crucial late steal as Wisconsin won 79-74 for its fifth straight win after a 1-5 stretch marked by poor shooting. Sam Dekker added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Badgers (22-5, 9-5 Big Ten), who swept the season series and moved a half-game ahead of the Hawkeyes (19-7, 8-5) in the Big Ten standings. “We like to get into our classroom and in the gym and teach guys things. Show them film, work with them,” Ryan said. “Frank is one of those guys thats doing a heck of a job on his learning curve. Hes really been pretty sharp.” No one was sharper than Kaminsky in the final 36 seconds. Josh Oglesbys jumper with 1:01 left put Iowa up 72-71, but Kaminsky answered with a jumper that gave Wisconsin a one-point lead. Kaminsky then stripped Iowas Roy Devyn Marble under the basket and hit two free throws as the Badgers went up 75-72 with 24.5 seconds left. “He was trying to make a play, and he presented the ball and I just hit it out of his hands. Thats one of those plays where its kind of up to the (referee) to see what theyre going to call. I thought I got it clean,” Kaminsky said of the steal. “Im just happy it came out in our favour.” Marble had 21 points and 11 assists for the Hawkeyes, who lost their third home game in four tries. Marble could have milked the shot clock down to just over a second on the games biggest play. He instead attacked the rim and paid for it with a turnover that the Hawkeyes didnt recover from. “You call a play and then hes got to read it. Thats what he did,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. This was just the second game in two weeks for Iowa. The Hawkeyes were off ahead of last Saturdays 82-70 win at Penn State, and Tuesdays postponement at Indiana gave the Hawkeyes an extra week off. After a ratheer rusty start, Iowa asserted itself in the second half.dddddddddddd Marble hit a 3 and Aaron White followed with a strong drive to the hoop that put the Hawkeyes ahead 62-58 with 6:27 left. The Badgers seemed flummoxed at times by Iowas zone defence, scoring just 20 points in the first 16 minutes of the second half. Still, Wisconsin tied it at 66-all with 3:18 left on a three-point play by Nigel Hayes, and freshman Bronson Koenigs jumper put the Badgers ahead 71-70 with 1:21 left. “Hes a good player. Youre going to see a lot more of him over the next few years,” Ryan said of Koenig, who had a career-high 12 points. Iowa was forced to make a rare lineup change. Forward Zach McCabe started in place of Melsahn Basabe, who was limited to just a minute because of illness. Basabe is one of Iowas top interior defenders, and the Badgers took advantage of his absence early on. Wisconsin hit 12 of its first 16 shots, and Dekkers 3 put the Badgers ahead 34-24. Wisconsin shot 57 per cent from the field in the first half, and Koenig matched his previous career high of 10 points in just 10 minutes as the Badgers led 40-31. But Wisconsin missed its first six shots after the break and Iowa eventually retook the lead, 52-51, with 10:55 left. Oglesby matched a season high with 17 points for Iowa. But White was held to just four points, and McCabes 3-point attempt with less than 20 seconds left and the Hawkeyes down 3 never reached the rim. “It didnt come out of his hand cleanly, but he was wide open,” McCaffery said of McCabe. “I dont think hell make any excuses.” Kaminsky shares Ryans assertion that shot-making has keyed Wisconsins recent surge. But Kaminsky added that the belief that those shots are going to fall has been whats really reinvigorated the Badgers over the past three weeks. “Having the confidence to step up and take those shots is back. I think we had that at the start of the season. It kind of went away for a little bit, and now I think we have that back,” Kaminsky said. The franchise tag dispute, whether Jimmy Graham should be paid as a tight end or wide receiver, none of that matters now. Graham and the New Orleans Saints have agreed to terms on a new contract. According to ESPNs Adam Schefter, its a four-year, $40 million deal with $21 million guaranteed. The All-Pro broke the news on his Twitter account Tuesday, tweeting “Its official Im bleeding black and gold this morning!" Its official Im bleeding black and gold this morning! Thank you WhoDatNation for all the support. — Jimmy Graham (@TheJimmyGraham) July 15, 2014 The deal comes just ahead of the 4pm et deadline for franchise tagged players to sign new contracts with their teams. Graham of course filed a grievance when he was first tagged by the team, asking to be considered a wide receiver rather than a tight end, which would have pushed the price of his franchise tag higher. The grievance was ultimately rejected. The former third-rounder has 301 catches for 3,863 yards and 41 touchdowns in his four-year career, all with the Saints. This is baseball, youve got to reset and come ready to play the next game.” Red Sox manager John Farrell on momentum, whether it exists in baseball and if it does, whether his team has it following its late win on Sunday night: “You know, I think we certainly gained some confidence in the last couple of innings (Sunday) night, particularly how the first 14 or 15 innings of this series has gone. Much like we talked about coming into yesterdays game and putting Game 1 behind us, in my mind and in our clubhouse, Game 2 is behind us as well. Its been the beauty of this team all year long is to focus on tonights or todays game, and almost be a little bit singular in mind and not be living in the past by any means.” LINEUP CONSIDERATIONS: Andy Dirks will get the start for the Tigers in left field. Jhonny Peralta will play shortstop. Dirks, a left-handed hitter, is 2-5 in his career against Lackey, including a triple. Hes also taken a walk. Dirks is the third starting left fielder for the Tigers in as many games. Peralta (Game 1) and Don Kelly (Game 2) are the others. Mike Napoli will draw back into the starting lineup for the Red Sox, playing first base. GAME THREE PREDICTION: Whats that saying about momentum being the next days starting pitcher? Verlander continues to roll, the Tigers get to Lackey and take a 2-1 lead in the series, winning Tuesdays game 6-2. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

BOSTON - Never one to take a lot of time between pitches, John Lackey had extra motivation to throw quickly and get out of the biting chill at Fenway Park. Lackey pitched eight solid innings with temperatures in the low 40s as the Boston Red Sox beat the slumping Tampa Bay Rays 7-4 on Tuesday night. “I try to work fast,” Lackey said. “Especially when its cold, Im trying to get guys in the dugout. It wasnt a whole lot of fun out there on the field today.” Lackeys teammates showed their appreciation with a five-run rally in the sixth as the Red Sox opened a three-game series with a win over their AL East rivals. Shane Victorino drove in his first two runs of the season while going 4 for 4, hiking his batting average from .133 to .316. Victorino was playing in his fourth game after missing the first 22 with a hamstring injury. He singled in his first two at-bats, hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth and added an RBI double in the sixth. “We knew it was going to take a couple of games for him to get his feet on the ground,” Boston manager John Farrell said. “He does give us a completely different dynamic in that 2-hole. When we can set the table for that middle of the order, weve got a chance to score some runs.” Lackey (4-2) scattered six hits and allowed two runs, striking out five and walking one. After the Rays scored twice in the ninth, Koji Uehara came in and struck out Ben Zobrist on three pitches for his sixth save. Jackie Bradley Jr. had a pair of doubles and two RBIs as the Red Sox got 13 hits and won for the third time in four games. Xander Bogaerts was the only Boston starter without a hit. “It was good to see the evenness throughout the at-bats 1 through 9,” Farrell said. The Rays lost for the seventh time in eight road games and are 4-9 away from home. Wil Myers had two hits and scored a run for the Rays. James Loney hit two doubles and joined Myers as the only Tampa Bay players with more than one hit. Both scored in the ninth on a throwing error by Bogaerts at shortstop. The Rays began the second leg of a 10-game road trip, which they started 1-3 in Chicago. Erik Bedard held Boston to one run through five innings, but the bullpen could not stop the Red Sox in the sixth. Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said both starters had good command, but it was a tough night for relievers to sit through the frigid conditions and then have to pitch. “Bedard was good. I thought Lackeys command was good tonight,” Maddon said. “Its hard. Its hard for both sides. The game was not meant to be played in this kind of weather. But youve got to fight through it.” Brandon Gomes (1-1) started the sixth inning and immediately walked Mike Napoli and Jonny Gomes. Juan Carlos Oviedo took over with one out and fared no better. A.J. Pierzynski hit an RBI single, then Will Middlebrooks and Bradley hit back-to-back doubles. Bradleys shot to centre bounced off the wall in one of the deepest parts of Fenway Park, scoring Pierzynski and Middlebrooks easily. Bradley went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Victorinos ground-rule double. The Red Sox scored three more on three hits off Oviedo. Boston scored five times in the inning and sent nine batters to the plate. “Thats something that we normally dont do,” Maddon said. “Were normally pretty good at minimizing damage. Weve got to do a better job of that.” Bedard got his third no-decision in four starts. He allowed four hits, striking out four and walking three. Middlebrooks walked to start the fifth and went to third when Bradley doubled to centre. The Rays nearly got out of it when Dustin Pedroia lined out to third baseman Evan Longoria, who made a dive for the bag. Middlebrooks was diving in the other direction and barely beat the tag, then scored on Victorinos fly to centre to put Boston up 1-0. The Rays got the run back in the sixth when Desmond Jennings doubled with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Longoria. Ryan Hanigans single in the seventh drove in Myers, who led off the inning with a double that was just a few feet left of being a homer to centre. NOTES: Napoli has reached base in 24 of 25 games this season. … It was the 28th anniversary of Roger Clemens first 20-strikeout game for Boston, when he broke the major league record for a nine-inning game against Seattle. … Red Sox DH David Ortiz played in his 1,994th game. … Tampa Bay played its 1,000th game since shortening the teams name to Rays in 2008. A steady supply of refreshmentsLets face it: looking down a tournament consisting of 68 teams, 67 games, and 134 halves of exciting basketball, you have time for a beverage or two. Draw up your own personal version of the Washington Posts celebrated March Madness beer bracket. If youre not passed out by the time Kansas gets eliminated, youre doing it wrong. 2. Your finest throwback jersey The Wilt? The Kareem? The Laettner? Whatever your style, no March Madness would be complete unless youre decked out in some properly sleeveless vintage threads (And in the process, take a trip down memory lane to the days when Vince Carter still bothered to dunk). 3. NCAA snuggies But why stop with jerseys? If the plan is not to leave the sofa til somebody cuts the net down, you might as well stay cozy in one of these terribly comfortable (and terribly gaudy) college hoops snuggies. 4. A mini hoop for your living room Do you sit around daydreaming about draining a three at the buzzer? Well, forget about going outside to prove that you could have nailed it—if only coach had put you in. Instead, take the time to perfect your flick, re-create unforgettable dunks, and re-live the tourneys most brutal posterizations-all without putting your pants on. For more serious in-home hoopsters, set up both an NBA and college three-point line. 5. This insanely awesome 90s basketball pen This year, youll need two brackets. One is the TSN Tournament Challenge, where you compete online against your friends. The other is the hard copy version, which will stare you down from your coffee table throughout the tourney. To check off your genius upset picks as they happen, look no further than this insanely cool basketball pen. 6. The best basketball movies When the last buzzer sounds and your insatiable craving for hoops remains thooroughly unquenched, the best basketball movies of all time are here to fill the void.dddddddddddd We recommend starting with this classic trifecta: Hoosiers, He Got Game, and White Men Cant Jump. If youre still wired after 13 hours of Madness and three feature films, well, theres always Space Jam. 7. Star-tracking resources Youre going to hear a lot of new names over the next couple weeks, and at times it can feel like information overload. Youll definitely require some background info on where each tournament-conquering scorer might fall in the upcoming NBA Draft. For all that and much, much nerdier stats and information, look to two resources: NBADraft.net and DraftExpress.com. Track the stars, keep tabs on whose draft stock is rising or falling, and find out who could be the next Amare Stoudemire (with the heart of a champion, of course). 8. A March Madness map Just where is Gonzaga, anyway? What the heck is Creighton? And where exactly might one find Stephen F. Austin State University? March Madness geography questions require answers. This interactive map is a handy geographical guide to college basketballs biggest programs, and it also outlines how much each teams coach is paid per tournament win. 9. March Madness Bingo A blog called For All Momkind came up with this genius idea to make the tourney a touch more exciting: March Madness bingo cards. Employ them to add a much-needed layer of intrigue to the impending deluge of college hoops clichés. 10. TSN GO Naturally, wed be remiss not to close with a reminder that the whole tourney is available to all TSN subscribers on the networks newly-launched digital live streaming service. If youre somehow tied up away from the big screen due to work-related commitments, its the perfect antidote to that whole having-a-career thing. LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Marquette has perfected the art of the comeback. Down late yet again, Jae Crowder scored six points during a decisive 14-2 run, and the third-seeded Golden Eagles pulled away from Murray State for a 62-53 victory Saturday that sends the Golden Eagles into next weekends West Regional semifinals. Crowder finished with 17 points, 12 in the second half, and also had 13 rebounds. Darius Johnson-Odom also had 17 for Marquette (27-7). “When youre playing a team like Murray State, theyre going to keep throwing punches and throwing punches, and you have to find a way to slow them down,” Johnson-Odom said. “We did a great job of that today.” Isaiah Canaan had 16 points and six rebounds for the sixth-seeded Racers (31-2), who fell just short of their first trip to the regional semifinals for the second time in three years. This one is sure to sting, too, even if it wasnt as gutwrenchingly close. Murray State lost to Butler 54-52 in 2010 when Gordon Hayward forced a Canaan turnover with about 10 seconds left. The Racers have come a long way since. They won their first 23 games of the season, were the last team in the country to lose and showed against Marquette they can play with anyone. “We proved today that we belong, and we belonged on a national stage,” Racers coach Steve Prohm said. “We just werent good enough the last seven minutes.” Give Marquette some credit for that. Despite a decided size advantage — Prohm joked Crowder and Johnson-Odom were missing spring practice somewhere — the Golden Eagles could never quite get in sync against the speedy, aggressive Racers. That Marquette was essentially playing a road game couldnt have helped. Plenty of Racers fans made the three and a half hour drive for the game, and Kentucky fans jumped on the bandwagon in a show of state solidarity. When Jewuan Long made a layup to put the Racers up 46-41 with 7:43 to play, the crowd responded with the kind of roar usually reserved for that other Kentucky team. But the Golden Eagles had plenty of practice at rallying during the regular season, when they came back to win six games after trailing by 11 or more points, and never doubted they could come back against the Racers. “Eight minutes,” Johnson-Odom said, “is like 30 minutes.” Todd Mayo made a pair of free throws, and Crowder banked in a jumper off the glass. Davante Gardner, who missed eight games at the end of the season with a left knee strain, followed with a layup and a pair of free throws to put Marquette back in front 49-46. Ivan Aska briefly halted the Marquette run with a putback, but the Golden Eagles kept right on going. After another Gardner layup, Crowder took a charge and then came down to the other end and coolly drilled a 3, sending the outnumbered Marquette fans into a frenzy. Even the university president, the Rev. Scott Pilarz, was pumping his fist and screaming, “We are! Marquette!” “We were a couple plays from closing the game out, and I just wanted to make the next big play,” said Crowder, the Big East player of the year. “I really wanted to make that play defensively, and it worked out in my favour. I just wanted to try to get a steal, a charge, a rebound, something. I just wanted to make that play. I knew at that time it was big in the game, and it was the next big stop that we needed.” Crowder added another free throw before Long was able to end a four-minute scoring drought. But it was too late. The Racers were just 2 of 12 with five turnovers over the last 7:43. “I told them in the locker room that I just — I wish I could have figured out a way to get them through the last seven minutes,” Prohm said. “I dont think we wore down. Weve got a tough, resilient group … We just didnt finish some plays on the offensive end that we had to do in order to withstand some of their run-outs and some of their execution, and we didnt.” Long finished with 12 points, and Ed Daniel tied a career high with 14 rebounds. Murray State shot just 31 per cent, including 9 of 35 in the second half. Donte Poole, Murray States second-leading scorer, managed only seven points, half his average. Poole was playing with a nose broken by an inadvertent elbow during Thursdays game. “We thought we would come out with a win,” Poole said. “So for it to end like this, youre upset, but youve just got to look at all the great things weve done this season, as well.” Marquette now looks to Phoenix, where it will play the winner of Norfolk State-Florida on Thursday. The Golden Eagles also made it to the regional semifinals last year before getting routed by North Carolina, and many expect them to go further this year now that Missouri is out of the way. Not that the Golden Eagles want to hear any of that. “I think its even harder,” Johnson-Odom said, who began shaking his head as soon as he heard the word "Missouri. “I dont think those seeds really mean too much of anything for us. We were an 11 seed, and we werent expected to do anything last year. I think for us were going to just have to stay focused on what we want to do, whats the goal for our team, things that weve been doing to continue the success weve been having.” wholesale jerseys . Louis Blues return to top spot in the TSN. jerseys from china .Y. – Centre Corban Knight scored 3:30 into overtime, and the Abbotsford Heat rallied to edge the Utica Comets 5-4 on Wednesday in American Hockey League play. http://www.nfljerseyswarehouse.com/. The incident happened during Barcelonas 3-2 win at Villarreal on April 27th when Alves, who is black, picked up the banana thrown by 26-year-old David Campayo Lleo, bit off a piece and then discarded it. wholesale nfl jerseys . The deal, filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, calls for the NCAA to toughen return-to-play rules for players who receive head blows and create a $70 million fund to pay for thousands of current and former athletes to undergo testing to determine whether they suffered brain trauma while playing football and other contact sports. cheap jerseys . After losing the first two games of this set in Arlington the Tigers showed some signs of life on Tuesday, as Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta all homered and Austin Jackson went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI for the AL Central champs in a 5-2 win. VANCOUVER — The San Jose Sharks have made beating the Vancouver Canucks a habit of late. Thursday night was no different. Antti Niemi made 25 saves and Matt Pelechs first NHL goal stood up as the winner as the Sharks stayed perfect on the young season by downing the Canucks 4-1 for a ninth straight victory over their Pacific Division rivals. “It was a test for us to come on the road and play in this building again,” said Sharks head coach Todd McClellan. “There werent any freebies. A good one for us to play in.” Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Patrick Marleau and Brent Burns, into an empty net, also scored for the Sharks (4-0-0), who beat the Canucks 4-1 in both teams season opener after sweeping Vancouver four straight in the first round of last years playoffs. San Jose, which also won all three meetings during the 2013 regular season, has not lost to the Canucks (3-2-0) since Jan. 21, 2012. “Were just deep, were really, really deep and we want to come at you every night,” said Sharks captain Joe Thornton, who along with Logan Couture, added two assists. “We have been doing that early on.” The backbreaker was Marleaus goal that made it 3-1 midway through the second period. Despite trailing 2-0 after the first, the Canucks managed to cut the San Jose lead in half with Mike Santorellis fourth goal in three games at 10:20, only to see Marleau score on a one-timer just 95 seconds later. “No matter what happened or where we struggled, we crawl back into it (at) 2-1. We need to at least play with that for a little bit and not get scored on so quickly,” said Canucks coach John Tortorella. “Really that was a gimme. We were just too slow. We turn it over when we dont need to and then we dont react defensively after the turnover.” Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo held his team in with 25 stops, but said Vancouver needed a better start. “Obviously the first period hurt us. Weve made comebacks the last couple of games but against good teams like that its tough to get out of a hole,” he said. "I thought our first period we were a little bit tentative. “Against a team like that you got to play 60 minutes if you want to give yourself a chance.” Sharks forward Tomas Hertl, who became the talk of the NHL after scoring four times in Tuesdays 9-2 win over the New York Rangers, was held pointless but was still noticeable as part of a dominant San Jose first line that includes Thornton and Burns. San Jose led 3-1 after 40 minutes and hadd a good chance to extend the lead five minutes into the third, but Luongo kept Vancouver in it with a breakaway stop on Hertl.dddddddddddd The Canucks, who had come back from two-goal deficits against the Calgary Flames and the New Jersey Devils, showed little life until midway through the period. Their new puck-pressure style eventually started to gain a bit of time in the Sharks zone, but they rarely threatened Niemis crease. “Youve got to give them some credit. Theyve got a good team over there, play a great system,” said Canucks captain Henrik Sedin. “Youve going to have games like this where you have to win the one-on-one battles and we didnt do that enough.” Vancouver pulled Luongo with 3:08 to go in the period, but Burns scored into an empty net with 2:19 to play. “They locked it down pretty well,” said Tortorellla, whose team had just six shots in the third. “Its not like were playing against no one out there but we need to have more people going to play against a balanced team like that.” Vlasic opened the scoring at 12:16 of the first period by finishing off a nice passing play. The San Jose defenceman took a feed from Burns off the rush in the high slot and snapped a shot blocker side on Luongo. Niemi came up big on a Vancouver power play later in the first, with big stops on both Alexander Edler and Jason Garrison. Luongo then stopped Burns on another good chance before Pelech doubled the Sharks lead with 58 second. The nephew of Vancouver general manager Mike Gillis chipped a pass from behind the Canucks net up into the top corner past Luongo. “It felt awesome,” said the 26-year-old, who was playing in just his ninth NHL game. “It was a really good feeling to see that go in.” Notes: The teams play twice more this season, Nov. 7 in San Jose and Nov. 14 in Vancouver. … Santorelli, who scored the winner in the Canucks 3-2 overtime victory on Tuesday against the New Jersey Devils, wasnt credited with the goal Wednesday. The Burnaby, B.C., native is the first Vancouver player to record consecutive OT winners in franchise history. … The Canucks host the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday before heading out on a season-high seven-game road trip. San Jose is home to the Ottawa Senators the same night. … Canucks right-winger Zack Kassian will be eligible to return to the lineup on Saturday after serving his eight-game suspension (three pre-season, five regular) after breaking the jaw of Edmonton Oilers centre Sam Gagner with a high stick. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Henrik Stenson remained in position to win the European Tour money title, opening a one-stroke lead Friday in the season-ending World Tour Championship. The Swede had an 8-under 64 to reach 12 under after two rounds on Jumeirahs Earth Course. Stenson also leads the Race to Dubai standings. The points champion will receive $1 million from a $3.75 million bonus pool that counts on the final money list. In September, Stenson won the PGA Tours season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta to take the FedEx Cup title and $10 million bonus. Spains Alejandro Canizares was second after a 67. Stenson is trying to become the second Swede to top the money list, following Robert Karlsson in 2008. Stenson had a five-stroke advantage over Englands Justin Rose, second in the points standings. Graeme McDowell, third in the points race, was eight strokes behind Stenson. “They are chasing me as good as they can, and I know neither one of the guys are going to back down,” Stenson said. “So it is better I keep my foot down and my head down and try and keep the momentum going.” Stenson also won the Deutsche Bank Championship outside Boston en route to the FedEx Cup title. “The key for me this summer was that I have been up so many times,” Stenson said. “When I needed the putts to drop they did in Boston, and when I played really well to win in Atlanta (U.S. Tour Championship).” Rose, the U.S. Open champion, says it is becoming increasingly difficult to catch Stenson. “I thought that 5-under par would be good enough for me to just stay in the tournament, which I am happy about,” Rose said. “But then this golf course seems really tailor-made for Henrik. He just seems to be able to take advantage of all the par-5s, and hes playing really, really well. It will be tough to catch him.” Defending champion Rory McIlroy was tied for ninth at 6 under after a 67. “Its nice to know going into the weekend you still have a chance to win the golf tournament, and thats the stage Ive been trying to get to for the last few months,” he said. “I finally feel like Ive got to the stage now where I can contend week-in, week-out.” wholesale nfl jerseys . — The basic role that Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito shared as offensive linemen for the Miami Dolphins was protecting quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The French driver made it through the first two qualifying rounds and into the Fast Six.ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Cardinals signed free-agent second baseman Mark Ellis to a one-year, $5.25 million contract, giving them insurance for rookie Kolten Wong. In a conference call after the deal was announced Monday, the 36-year-old Ellis said he had some multiyear offers but chose the Cardinals because he wants to win a World Series. Ellis played for the Dodgers in the NL championship series last fall against St. Louis, which won the Series in 2011 and lost in six games to the Red Sox in 2013. “I am fully fine with one-year deals at this point in my career,” Ellis said. “There were some good opportunities, very good teams and very good organizations. I felt like this was the perfect place for myself and my family.” The contract calls for an additional $125,000 at 250 plate appearances and for every 25 plate appearances after that up to 475 plate appearances. “Nothing was promised,” Ellis said. “Ive pretty much been an everyday player my whole career. Im going to prepare this off-season like Im going to play 162 games.” Ellis is a lifetime .265 hitter for three teams. He hit .270 with six home runs and 48 RBIs for the Dodgers last season, and is considered a strong defensive second baseman. Hes had only spot duty at other infield positions during his careeer, but was open to that option, noting he played third base two years in college and was a shortstop growing up.dddddddddddd “Im not so stubborn I have a huge ego that I have to be the second baseman,” Ellis said. “I dont care. I want to do whatever it takes to win a World Series.” Wong, a first-round pick in 2011, made his major league debut last year and is expected to get the starting shot at second base in 2014. Matt Carpenter moves to third base following the trade of David Freese to the Angels and Ellis provides a right-handed hitting option, plus hes open to a mentor role. Before learning of Carpenters position switch, Ellis hadnt thought the Cardinals would be a good fit. “Mark is a player we identified early-on as being an ideal fit for our team,” general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement. “His experience and steadiness, both in the field and at the plate, certainly enhances our overall roster makeup.” Ellis has appeared in 22 post-season games and batted .240 in the NLCS last fall with a double, triple and stolen base. Ellis has hit 20 or more doubles nine of the past 10 years and is a career .276 hitter with a .348 on-base percentage against left-handed pitching.
