Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Kerry, In the first period of Saturdays Montreal-Ottawa game, Brendan Gallagher is called for goaltender interference. Craig Anderson is outside the blue paint trying to make the save. When is it legal to make contact with the goalie without a penalty? It seems they can leave the crease, wander around, check a player but touch the goalie and a penalty is called! If his domain is the blue ice then stay in there and if you come out be prepared to bite the bullet! Bill George - I have a short question regarding a rule in international hockey. At this years WJHC, I noticed numerous times that play was whistled down when a player from one team entered the crease of the opposing teams goalie. Yet other times when a goal was scored by a player who had also clearly been in the crease. Why is the play not blown dead then or the goal taken back like the days of old in the NHL? Or is this a rule as entertaining or confusing as the shoulder vs. crossbar high stick call? Thank you for your time,Jason Hoef Bill: In watching the play closely we see that Craig Anderson was actually set to play a shot (butterfly position) at the top of his goal crease with both skates and pads visible inside the blue paint. Montreals gritty little pest, Brendan Gallagher attempted to set a legal screen tight to the top Andersons crease and while facing the shooter. In doing so, Gallagher reached back with his left glove (top of stick hand) which contacted Anderson in the facemask and knocked the Sens goalie off of his set position. Due to the fact that Gallagher reached back with his hand and stick resulting in contact with Craig Anderson inside his goal crease, the referee deemed it to be more deliberate than incidental and assessed the appropriate penalty for goalkeeper interference. The overriding rationale and language of rule 69 (Interference on the Goalkeeper) is that a goalkeeper should have the ability to move freely within his goal crease without being hindered by the actions of an attacking player. In all cases in which an attacking player initiates intentional or deliberate contact with a goalkeeper, whether or not the goalkeeper is inside or outside the goal crease and whether or not a goal is scored, the attacking player will receive a penalty. Lets take the scenario where the goalie is setup outside of his goal crease to cut down the angle and for the purpose of challenging the shooter, Rule 69.4 applies: If an attacking player initiates any contact with a goalkeeper, other than incidental contact, while the goalkeeper is outside his goal crease, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed. A goalkeeper is not “fair game” just because he is outside the goal crease. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an attacking player makes unnecessary contact with the goalkeeper. However, incidental contact will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside his goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such unnecessary contact. The ambiguity contained in the language of this rule beginning with the word “However…” places huge responsibility and pressure on the referee to ascertain incidental contact and if the attacking player made a “reasonable” effort to avoid such contact! Most often the benefit will (and should) go to the goalkeeper that is set to defend the incoming shot. When a goalkeepers motion/movement outside of his crease and prior to establishing a full set, results in contact with an attacking player and a goal results it should be deemed a good goal. The harsh truth, Bill, is that goalkeepers are provided special protection due to the unique nature of their position as provided and defined by the rules committee. Jason: The IIHF rule book states: Rule 534 – Interference – If an attacking player deliberately stands in the goal crease, without interfering with the goalkeeper, the referee shall stop the play and the ensuing face-off shall take place at the nearest face-off spot in the neutral zone. As you alluded to, Jason, once the puck enters the goal crease attacking players are allowed to enter the crease and legally play the puck. Rules then apply to the legal scoring of a goal. Daniel Wapple made 299 saves for Regina.dddddddddddd. - BLAZERS 7 HURRICANES 1 KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Chase Souto and Tyson Ness each scored twice as the Blazers won a battle of cellar dwellers in their lopsided victory over Lethbridge. Cole Ully, Matt Revel and Collin Shirley scored the other goals for Kamloops (11-31-5), which ended a seven-game losing streak. Giorgio Estephan had a power-play goal in the third period for the Lethbridge (9-36-5), which lost its sixth straight. Bolton Pouliot made 30 saves for the Blazers. Lethbridge goalie Jarrod Schamerhorn got the hook at 9:40 of the first period after allowing three goals on six shots. His replacement, Jonny Hogue, allowed another one in just over two minutes of play, and allowed four goals on 32 shots. - TIGERS 6 GIANTS 1 VANCOUVER — Jacob Doty scored twice as Medicine Hat trounced the Giants 6-1. KITCHENER, Ont. – John Morris is on the right track for a second straight Olympic gold medal. Morris, who won gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics throwing third rocks for Kevin Martin, skipped his new team to a victory on Tuesday, rolling to a 10-2 win over Rob Rumfeldts rink. The tournament will decide the final two mens and womens entries in the Canadian Olympic trials next month in Winnipeg. “Its well-known that Sheet E is tough,” said Morris. "Its definitely playing with some more curl in interesting spots compared to the other sheets. "So were glad we got a win on that sheet, and now we can focus on whatever sheet were on next. We cant take anything lightly; every game you get here is going to be against some tough opponents. " Morriss team, representing Kelowna and Vernon, B.C., took one in the first end, and then piled on with a stolen single in the second and two more in the third and never looked back to move on in the A-Event of the triple-knockout competition. Rumfeldts team dropped to the B-Event. Greg Balsdon of Elgin, Ont., made an angle-raise takeout for three in the 10th end to beat top seed Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., 10-9. Jacobs had taken an 8-3 lead thanks to three in the fourth end, one more in the fifth and a steal of two in the sixth before Balsdon mounted the comeback. In other Tuesday night mens play, 2006 Olympic gold-medallist Brad Gushue of St. Johns, N.L., stole three in the second end and got one more in the third and sailed to a 9-5 triumph over Jean-Michel Menard of St-Romuald, Que. Jake Higgs of Glencoe, Ont., was a 6-4 winner over Mark Kean of Ajax, Ont., in the other mens game. In the lone womens contest on Tuesday evening, Edmontons Val Sweeting recovered from an opening-round loss to beat Reginas Amber Holland 8-3. Sweeting moves on in the B-Event, while Holland drops to the C-Event — one loss away from elimination. In the afternoon draw, Winnipegs Barb Spencer stole deuces in first and fifth ends en route to an 8-5 win over Holland in the opening round of the womens tournament. Spencer stole one more in the third end to take an early 3-0 lead that she would never surrender. Holland, looking for her fourth trip to the trials, fell behind 6-1 at one point before getting to within two thanks to a stolen deuce in the seventh end. But Spencer got the deuce back in the eighth to seal the victory. In other action, Kelly Scott of Kelowna, B.C., took two in the 10th end for a 6-5 win over Cathy Auld of Mississauga, Ont. Tracy Horgan of Sudbury, Ont., defeated Sweeting 8-3 thanks largely to a stolen three in the eighth end when Sweetings final shot slid through the house. In the draws final game, Krista McCarville of Thunder Bay, Ont., drew for a single in the 11th end for a dramatic 9-8 victory over Calgarys Crystal Webster. The teams traded three-enders in the ninth and 10th ends to set up the extra. On the mens side, Rumfeldt scored three in the first end and three more in the third en route to an emphatic 12-5 win over fifth-seed Steve Laycock of Saskatoon. In the only all-Ontario matchup of the afternoon, Joe Frans of the Bradford Curing Club had his hands full early as Higgs took two in the first and stole another in the second when Franss final draw came up short. Higgs, calling the game but leaving last rocks to third Brent Ross, forced Frans to chase most of the game and stole the last two ends for a 9-3 victory. Ottawas Bryan Cochrane faced Menard in a game that saw lots of rocks in play from the start. After holding Cochrane to a single in the first, Menard took control and cruised to a 10-4 win. In the other morning game, Balsdon hit for three in the ninth end for a 7-4 win over Rob Fowler of Brandon, Man. BERLIN — Borussia Dortmund beat Mainz 2-1 and moved closer to defending its Bundesliga title following Bayern Munichs loss on Saturday. Shinji Kagawa scored in the 77th minute, three minutes after former Dortmund striker Mohamed Zidan equalized for Mainz with his fifth goal in consecutive games since his winter transfer from the defending champion. Jakub Blaszczykowski put the home side in front in the 26th, with an unstoppable shot to the top left corner from the edge of the penalty area. Following its eighth straight win in all competitions, a club record, Dortmund was seven points clear of Bayern with 10 rounds left after Sundays games. “I havent thought about whether the seven points mean anything. I could only blather rubbish about it now,” Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said after his 100th Bundesliga win. Bayer Leverkusen beat Bayern 2-0 with two late goals from Stefan Kiessling and Karim Bellarabi. “Were very disappointed,” Bayern sporting director Christian Nerlinger said. Zidan declined to celebrate after scoring when Adam Szalai laid the ball back for him to fire. “I have respect for Borussia. I spent 3 1/2 years here and it was a wonderful time for me,” the Egypt striker said. Dortmunds endeavour paid off when Lukasz Piszczek crossed for Kagawa to crash in a shot off the underside of the crossbar and stretch the sides unbeaten league run to 18 games. “Mo really got the (Mainz) goal? I didnt realize that or I would have congratulated him,” Klopp said. “Then its perfect. He scored his goal, we won.” Elsewhere, Hertha Berlin ended its 12-game winless run with a 1-0 victory over Werder Bremen to climb out of the relegation zone. Schalke lost 2-1 at Freiburg, Stuttgart romped to a 4-0 win at Hamburger SV, Kaiserslautern and Wolfsburg drew 0-0 and relegation-threatened Augsburg drew 2-2 at Hannover. Despite leaving Franck Ribery on the bench after his heavy knock in Frances 2-1 midweek win in Germany, Bayern dominated the first half. “We played an outstanding game with great use of space and many gilt-edged goal chances that we didnt use. But thats the crux,” Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said. Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno, who turns 20 on Sunday, produced a fingertip save to deny Arjen Robben in the 13th, and Bayerns frustration threatened to boil over after half an hour when Rafinha had to step in to separate teammates Jerome Boateng and Thomas Mueller during a heated argument. Bayern was helpless when Eren Derdiyok kept Gonzalo Castros cross in play and flicked the ball back for Kiessling to score from close range. “Bayern also had chances, but we used ours,” Kiessling said. The visitors were caught on the break when Simon Rolfes set Castro free on the right. He crossed to the middle where Bellarabi timed his run perfectly to score his first ever Leverkusen goal. Leverkusen next hopes to overturn a 3-1 deficit to Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday. “My team showed a great attitude,” Leverkusen coach Robin Dutt said. Fourth-placed Schalke, playing without topscorer Klaas Jan Huntelaar, failed to close the gap on Bayern as Freiburg climbed off the bottom. Sebastian Freis scored his first goal for the home side in the 18th, and Daniel Caligiuri tucked away a penalty to make it 2-0 in the 66th. Teemu Pukki pulled one back in the 72nd, seconds after going on as a substitute, when midfielder Jermaine Jones played the Finn through. Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos earned a second yellow card with three minutes remaining. Kaiserslautern replaces Freiburg at the bottom after its 14th consecutive game without a win. Stuttgart deservedly went ahead in Hamburg in the 23rd when Vedad Ibisevic easily eluded Slobodan Rajkovic before shooting inside the left post. It got worse for Rajkovic eight minutes later when the Serbian defender gave away a penalty against Shinji Okazaki. Zdravko Kuzmanovic made no mistake from the spot. Rajkovic was unfortunate to concede another penalty after the break, when Martin Harnik made the most of his outstretched arm. Kuzmanovic duly made it 3-0 in the 47th. Hamburgs Jose Paulo Guerrero was sent off for a terrible challenge on Sven Ulreich in the 54th. Replays showed the Peru striker made no attempt to play the ball when he caught the Stuttgart goalkeeper studs up from behind. Harnik rounded out the scoring in the last minute. Nikita Rukavytsya gave Hertha coach Otto Rehhagel a winning debut at home against the 73-year-olds former side, when his mis-hit volley bounced over the helpless Tim Wiese for Herthas first goal in six games across all competitions. Ulissi made his move inside the final 300 metres, bursting out of the peloton to edge Robert Kiserlovski for a second stage win in the race. Wilco Kelderman was third on the 179-kilometre (111-mile) leg from Foligno to Montecopiolo, which had two category one climbs, including the final ascent to the finish. With new regulations and preseason testing already difficult, Red Bull has the added stress of whether Daniel Ricciardo has what it takes to drive alongside Sebastian Vettel. Although Vettels relationship with Mark Webber was often difficult, Webber was a driver who guaranteed a healthy haul of points and his retirement from Formula One has left Red Bull with a void to fill. “It is a huge opportunity and privilege to work alongside a four-time world champion in Sebastian,” Ricciardo said. “I am really looking forward to it.” With the constructors title to defend, Red Bull needs Ricciardo to perform consistently well. “I would love to be as competitive as soon as possible,” he said. “After some time, hopefully not too long, I want the team to know that I am capable of getting some top results.” This is even more the case given how their rivals are shaping up. Ferrari boasts two world champions — Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen — and the Mercedes pair of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg will have gained confidence from last season, winning three races and securing eight pole positions between them and challenging Red Bull for pure speed. Replacing one Australian driver with another makes for a nice symmetry, but the gulf between Ricciardo and Webber remains huge. Webber won nine GPs and finished thhird three times in the championship race, while the 24-year-old Ricciardo is in his third season and his best race finish is seventh.dddddddddddd Rivals will hope that a slow start from Ricciardo will impact on Red Bulls confidence and unsettle Vettel over the course of the season. A strong start on his home track in Melbourne could be just the early boost Ricciardo needs to silence the doubters. “I wont need much psyching up, Melbourne will take care of that. Being the sole Australian I am sure there will be a lot of attention,” Ricciardo said. “People talk about pressure, but for me it is exciting, the adrenaline will be pumping.” How Ricciardo fares in qualifying could also play a factor in how well Vettel does. Red Bull has been consistent in qualifying over the years, often leading races from 1-2 on the grid and making it more difficult for opponents to get to Vettel. But if Ricciardo is qualifying lower down the grid, this could leave Vettel more exposed to attack. The problems experienced in preseason testing offer further encouragement to Red Bulls rivals. “Were definitely not up to scratch with where wed like to be,” Ricciardo said during the final preseason testing in Bahrain recently. “Its clear we probably wont come out to Melbourne and dominate as the team did last year.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

BOULDER, Colo. — Long after the kids from Kansas have started raking in their NBA bucks, Askia Booker of Colorado will still be talking about the day he struck it big — the day he made the shot at the buzzer to beat the Jayhawks. Booker grabbed an in-bounds pass, dribbled twice, took two long steps, then launched the 3-pointer that gave Colorado a 75-72 victory Saturday and left him gasping for air underneath a pile of court-storming Buffs fans. It was Colorados first win over No. 6 Kansas (6-2) in the last 20 tries — a stretch dating to 2003. “Unless Im in the NBA championship, thats the only thing that could top that,” Booker said. Odds are, he wont be. Many of these Kansas players could. There are, by most estimations, at least two lottery picks and two more first-round prospects on Bill Selfs typically stacked roster. And, yes, that talent gap showed while Colorado (9-1) was squandering a six-point lead over the final 1:44 — a comeback capped when one of those first-round prospects, Perry Ellis, hit a shot to tie it at 72 with 4 seconds left. But after a timeout, Buffs forward Xavier Johnson squeezed an in-bounds pass from the corner of the backcourt to Booker, who dribbled just past the back foot of the massive Buffs logo at centre court — or about even with where John Elways courtside seats were located — and launched the shot from 30 feet. Nothing but net. “Im not sure I ever thought that would happen,” Booker said. The fans exploded onto the court, straight past Elway, and gang tackled Booker, a junior who is trying to lead the Buffs to three straight appearances in the NCAA tournament for the first time in history. This win will look mighty good on their resume. Its their ninth straight — CU hasnt lost since its opener against Baylor — and it marks only the second CU win in the last 48 meetings between the former Big 12 foes. “Its hard for me to put this win in historical perspective,” CU coach Tad Boyle said. “But for where this program is in the evolution stage, this is kind of a hump game.” Booker and Spencer Dinwiddie led CU with 15 points each. After Colorado left for the Pac-12, the schools kept the series going mainly because Boyle, who has led this renaissance in Boulder, is a former Kansas player. He was on the Jayhawks roster, in fact, back in 1982, when Colorado won one of its very few games over Kansas. Kansas, which won 90-54 in Lawrence last season, still leads one of the most lopsided series west of the Mississippi 123-40. Freshman Andrew Wiggins led the Jayhawks, who had been ranked second but have now lost two of their last three, with 22 points. Frank Mason had 11 and Ellis 10 as Kansas lost despite hitting 52.9 per cent from the floor. “Were not playing very good,” Self said. “Were not playing good at all. The pieces just arent quite fitting yet and were trying to find ourselves.” CU won this game in part because Boyle abandoned his usual man-to-man defence and put Colorado in a zone, knowing Kansas was most dangerous inside, not at the perimeter. Another key difference: Colorado shot 37 free throws — 17 more than the Jayhawks, who were in foul trouble almost from the start in this one. Dinwiddie and Booker each missed one of two from the line down the stretch, which helped Kansas pull even after trailing 68-62. Bookers free throw gave CU a 71-68 lead with 18.7 seconds left, and on the next possession, Dinwiddie fouled Wiggins while he was shooting a 3-pointer. But Wiggins made only two of the free throws and Kansas had to foul. Thats when Dinwiddie made one of two, to set up the tying shot from Ellis, then Bookers game-winner — a nice book end, if you will, with the 3-pointer he made as the first-half buzzer was going off. Bookers two long steps before launching the game-winner were a topic of conversation in the Kansas locker room. “I thought he travelled, but you know that Euro move,” Self said. “We let him catch it. Thats a little frustrating.” Small consolation on this day, but the last two times Kansas has lost to the Buffs — 1991 and 2003 - the Jayhawks have gone on to the Final Four. Theyll be in the mix again this year, for sure. On this magical day in Boulder, the Colorado contingent felt like champs, too. “For our fans and our players, its huge, absolutely,” Boyle said. “But I want our fans to understand, its not about Kansas. Its about Colorado. Thats where we need to get this program.” . “I cant say much, we agreed not to say much, but talks are ongoing and Andrei wants to stay in Montreal,” agent and former NHL player Sergei Berezin told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on ESPN.com on Friday. Regehr has not pplayed with the Kings since suffering an injury in Game 1 of his teams second-round series against the Anaheim Ducks.dddddddddddd. CLEVELAND — The Toronto Blue Jays are determined to have a special season. They opened it by making history. J.P. Arencibia hit a three-run homer in the 16th inning to send the Blue Jays, who rallied to force extras with a three-run ninth, to a 7-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Thursday in the longest opening-day game ever in the major leagues. A game that seemed so routine for several hours wound up extraordinary. “I guess its pretty cool now,” said Arencibia, who wasnt thrilled at catching all 16 innings. “Im glad to be on the winning end.” Arencibia was 0 for 6 with three strikeouts before he connected off Indians reliever Jairo Asencio. The marathon eclipsed the previous longest openers — 15 innings between Cleveland and Detroit on April 19, 1960, and 15 innings between Philadelphia and Washington on April 13, 1926. According to STATS LLC, the Indians-Blue Jays opener was the longest of 1,360 opening-day games played since 1901. “If youre going to break records you might as well do it on opening day,” said Indians All-Star closer Chris Perez, who was able to show some humour after allowing the Blue Jays to come back from a 4-1 deficit in the ninth. "No position player wants to be out there for 16 innings on opening day. I feel terrible. “Everybody did their job today except me.” Luis Perez, Torontos seventh pitcher, worked four scoreless innings for the win and Sergio Santos got two outs to end the 5-hour, 14-minute game. Jose Bautista homered and hit a sacrifice fly for Toronto, which did next to nothing for eight innings against Cleveland starter Justin Masterson before storming back in the ninth. Jack Hannahan hit a three-run homer in the second to give Cleveland a 4-0 lead against Ricky Romero. But the Indians didnt score again, blanked for 14 innings by Torontos pitchers to disappoint a sellout crowd of 43,190 that thinned to just a few thousand die-hards by the end. An opener that began in clear skies and bright sunshine ended just after twilight as the sun disappeared over the Lake Erie horizon. This one had a little of everything: strong pitching, bad pitching, blown chances, emptied benches and bullpens, a soon-to-be 45-year-old infielder playing the outfield and, of course, a spot in baseball annals. “I guess we got in the record books,” said Masterson. “Thats something. Who started it? Thats a trivia question.” Masterson allowed just two hits and struck out 10 in eight dominant innings. But the Blue Jays, who believe they can hang with Boston, New York and Tampa Bay in the brutal AL East, rallied in the ninth off Perez and gave manager John Farrell reason to think this season could be wild. “If tonight is any kind of insight into this season, strap in,” Farrell said. “Were in for a long ride.” In the 16th, moments after the teams had rewritten the history books, Asencio walked Brett Lawrie and Omar Vizquel reached on a fielders choice before Arencibia, who hit 23 homers as a rookie last season, drove a pitch onto the pedestrian plaza in left. He was lucky it ever got there. After taking a ball, Arencibia thought third-base coach Brian Butterfield had given him the bunt sign and he popped his attempt foul. “For some reason, I thought I got the bunt sign,” Arencibia said. “That got me in two strikes. Then I was just trying to hit the ball. I happened to hit it hard and got it out of the park.” Arencibia was unaware of his gaffe until he got back into the dugout, where Farrell told him what he had done. “He high-fived me and said, Great job, you missed a sign,” Arencibia said, laughing. The Indians squandered a potential game-winning situation in the 12th. They loaded the bases on two walks and a single before Farrell brought 44-year-old shortstop Vizquel off the bench as a fifth infielder. The strategy worked when Asdrubal Cabrera swung at Perezs first pitch and bounced into an inning-ending double play. Toronto trailed 4-1 going into the ninth after being stopped by Masterson. But the Blue Jays rallied for three runs off Perez, who missed most of spring training with a strained side muscle and looked awful. He gave up two singles to start the inning before Bautistas sacrifice fly made it 4-2. Kelly Johnson took second on the play, and after Adam Lind walked, Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run double to tie it at 4. Perez got an out, but walked Eric Thames and was pulled by manager Manny Acta before hanging his head as he walked dejectedly to the dugout amid loud boos. “I dont think I was too pumped up,” Perez said. “I was rushing, definitely, especially when stuff started getting sticky.” Perezs meltdown cost Masterson a win he deserved. The right-hander won 12 games last season, but pitched better than his record. Acta chose him to open the season, picking him in spring training over Ubaldo Jimenez, who may be the staffs ace but hasnt lived up to expectations since he was acquired in a July trade form Colorado. Masterson set an early tone, striking out the side in the first. He retired the side in order four times, and except for giving up Bautistas homer, was never in serious trouble. Hannahans third career opening-day homer gave the Indians a 4-0 lead. Hours later, Hannahan didnt know the game had reached historic proportions. “It felt really long,” he said, “and a little chilly, too.” NOTES: Arencibia has a thing for debuts. He hit two homers on opening-day last season and connected for two in his first major league game in 2010. … The Indians have had six home openers go to into extras since Progressive Field opened in 1994. … Cleveland has lost four straight openers and eight of 10. … Cleveland pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts. … Torontos Colby Rasmus made a diving catch to rob Hannahan of extra bases in the fifth. … Farrell began his playing career with Cleveland and pitched five seasons for the Indians, often taking the mound in less-than-ideal-conditions in old Cleveland Stadium. “I pitched in the snow before,” he said. “Opening day on the Great Lakes is a risky proposition.” . — Garret Sparks made 31 saves as the Toronto Marlies beat the Grand Rapids Griffins 3-1 in American Hockey League play Tuesday. ST. LOUIS — Brett Gardners leaping catch in the 11th inning gave the New York Yankees life. Patient at-bats and their first hit since the fifth inning put them over the top. “I just tried to get back there as fast as I could,” Gardner said of his catch at the top of the left field wall that denied Yadier Molina of at least extra bases and perhaps a game-ending two-run homer in the Yankees 6-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in 12 innings Monday. “It was an easy play, just go back and make sure I get the ball in the glove before my back hits the wall.” Brian Roberts bases loaded single was the go-ahead hit in a three-run 12th fueled by two walks and a hit batter. The Yankees won for the fourth time in extra innings on the season, three of them in the last six games. “Its a grind,” Gardner said. “But weve been playing pretty well and we seem to really stay focused.” Pinch-hitter Alfonso Soriano and Brendan Ryan each added an RBI for the Yankees, who took the opener of a three-game interleague series for their third straight win. Alfredo Aceves (1-2) worked two scoreless innings and David Robertson earned his 11th save in 12 chances. “At that point, youre just trying to get the guy in,” Roberts said. “You need to be selective and find ways to win.” Jon Jay had an RBI double in the 12th for the Cardinals, who lost for the third time in 12 games. “Just a really bad day,” reliever Randy Choate said. “I felt fine coming in, just didnt have good stuff.” A standing-room crowd of 47,311, the third-largest at 9-year-old Busch Stadium, showed up to see an opponent making only its second appearance in St. Louis since losing to the Cardinals in the 1964 World Series. The enthusiasm did not appear to be dampened by a 61-minute weather delay — for rain that did not materialize — before the first pitch. Cardinals pitchers retired 20 of 21 batters before the 12th, when Choate (0-2) faced five batters and four reached safely. Five Yankees relievers were stingy, too, permitting two hits in seven innings. “It comes down to doing little things and getting big hits,” St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. “Thats no secret. We had a couple of opportunities to get the big hit. You cant do it all the time.” Jacoby Ellsbury got the rally started when he walked to lead off the inning and stole second, a call upheld after Matheny challenged. After coming through, Roberts is 3 for 6 in extra innings. “Another big hit for us,” manager Joe Girardi said. “I thought the bottom of the lineup was extremely productive.” Molina slammed his helmet in frustration after Gardner came down with his drive at the top of the fence with a runner on and one out in the 11th. Derek Jeter got a standing ovation before his first at-bat, and thousands stood again when he singled, although they also roared when he took a called third strike to end the eighth against Carlos Martinez after Molinas pinpoint throw on Gardner attempting to steal. Michael Wacha dealt with a rain delay for the fourth time in his 11 starts - total idle time of 4 hours, 52 minutes. After nine pitches the Yankees had the lead, with a walk by Gardner and a single by Jeter setting up Ellsburys RBI single. The first three batters reached in a two-run fifth, too, with Kelly Johnsons RBI single and Gardners sacrifice fly putting the Yankees up 3-1. New York rookie starter Chase Whitley was vulnerable early, too. The Cardinals needed two at-bats to tie it in the first when Matt Carpenter tripled off the right-field wall and Kolten Wong doubled, but they missed a chance for more when Wong overslid third and was caught stealing for the first time in eight attempts this season. Whitley qualified for a win for the first time in three career starts, but left with the bases loaded and none out in the sixth before the Cardinals tied it against Preston Claiborne. Allen Craig had an RBI groundout and Jhonny Peralta followed with a sacrifice fly. Wacha bounced back after taking a foul liner off his elbow while sitting in the dugout his last time out, giving up three runs on four hits in seven innings. He had a season-low two strikeouts, the first against Ellsbury leading off the sixth. NOTES: In a pregame ceremony, Jeter received Stan Musial cuff links and a $10,000 check for the captains Turn 2 Foundation. … The Cardinals also paid tribute to their 1964 team. … Whitley is the first Yankees pitcher to make his first three career starts on the road since Ramiro Mendoza made four in a row in 1996. … Cardinals RHP Lance Lynn (5-2, 3.60 ERA) opposes David Phelps (1-1, 3.18) on Tuesday night. Lynn is 1-3 with a 5.08 ERA in six career interleague starts. … Wacha hasnt permitted more than three runs in any of his starts. MELBOURNE, Australia — Cycling Australia says it will seek a maximum two-year ban for Michael Rogers if the 2004 Athens Olympic bronze medallist and three-time world time trial champion is found guilty of doping. The International Cycling Union said on Wednesday that Rogers tested positive for clenbuterol, which helps build muscle and burn fat, at the Japan Cup on Oct. 20. He has been provisionally suspended. Rogers, who has denied the doping claims, has requested an analysis of his B sample. Interim Cycling Australia chief executive Adrian Anderson says “while we respect Michael Rogers right to defend himself, we will support the maximum sanctions applicable in the event that hes found guilty of doping. TOKYO — Canada is down 2-1 to Japan in its best-of-five World Group Davis Cup series following a doubles match loss on Saturday. Torontos Daniel Nestor and Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., fell to Japans Kei Nishikori and Yasutaka Uchiyama 6-3, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-4. Both teams made player substitutions prior to the match as Dancevic went in for Vancouvers Vasek Pospisil, who is still recovering from a back injury. Nishikori subbed in for Yuichi Sugita on the Japanese side. The match marked the first time Dancevic and Nestor had played together in three years. “I thought those guys came out really strong and we really didnt take advantage of our chances,” said Canadian captain Martin Laurendeau. “The guys fought really hard and it was really a matter of a few points.” The Canadian pair got out to an early lead in the second set but Japan broke back to force the tiebreak, and capitalized to take a two-set advantage before Nestor and Dancevic captured the third set. For Nestor, the loss was only his eighth in Davis Cup doubles play in his entire 22-year career representing Canada. It was also the first loss for Dancevic and Nestor as a pair, who entered the contest undefeated together with a 3-0 record. Canada is currently ranked No. 7 on the Davis Cup Nations ranking while Japan sits at No. 12. STANFORD, Calif. — Matt Besler and Geoff Cameron might hear it from every angle if they were paying any attention or had a moments spare time. They could be reminded every day that this is the first time since 1990 the U.S. heads to a World Cup with no central defenders having played previous minutes in soccers showcase event. And that makes an already daunting task in Group G much more challenging for the Americans, who face Ghana, Portugal and Germany next month in Brazil. The competition for spots on the Americans back line is fierce, leaving no time to analyze the groups inexperience. “For us, theres nothing we can do about it,” Besler said before Sundays training at Stanford Stadium. “We cant change the fact that weve never experienced a World Cup. Were looking at it as a great opportunity. Weve never done it before but everyone is excited and really hungry to prove that we belong here and that we can do well.” Nobody knows how the foursome will look for the teams World Cup opener June 16 against Ghana in Natal, yet coach Jurgen Klinsmann will get a glimpse during an exhibition against Azerbaijan on Tuesday night at Candlestick Park. He has several choices for each defensive spot. If there are concerns with Omar Gonzalez, who tweaked his left knee during a May 3 game with the Los Angeles Galaxy against Colorado, Klinsmann might go with Cameron in the middle alongside Besler. Gonzalez has since returned to full training. “I think the competition is healthy, and its definitely alive and well here,” Gonzalez said. “Before I got injured, I was probably the fittest Ive been in a very long time.” Cameron plays right back for Stoke in the Premier League but insists he only needs a couple of reps at centre back in practice, scrimmages or exhibitions to find a groove again. “When youre playing against Man United, Chelsea, Everton, Tottenham, youre playing all the big boys every single weekend against the best competition, theres no room for mental errors, theres no complaining about how tired you are or this or that because the games come so quick,” Cameron said. “For me, it was a learning process the first year. As the second year comes, you get more comfortable, youre confident going into the other stadiums.” Besler, the 27-year-old Sporting Kansas City star who was the 2012 MLS Defender of the Year, has played in the middle with both Cameron and Gonzalez. Cameron and Besler very well could start in the centre back spots for the opener. Fabian Johnson or Timmy Chandler might play right back, though Johnson said he has seen regular time there. “I played right back in all the scrimmages so Im ready for this position,” Johnson said Sunday. DaMarcus Beasley could be on the left as he looks to become the first American to play in four World Cups. “It is different playing with different guys. Everyone has different styles,” Besler said. “I think as a team we play the same but when you have different guys back there you have to make little adjustments depending on whos back there. But for me I have experience with both. Ive played in World Cup qualifiers with Geoff, with Omar. I feel comfortable with anyone, really.” If midfielder Jermaine Jones is suspended at some point for accumulation of yellow cards, Klinsmann might call upon Johnson in the defensive midfield. While experience on the defence would certainly be preferred at this stage, goalkeeper Tim Howard will help everyone get up to speed. “All things considered, of course youd like to have some guys back there who understand the rhythm and the pacing and the difference of a World Cup,” said Alexi Lalas, a starting U.S. defender for the 1994 World Cup, former MLS general manager and current analyst. "This decision was made a long time ago, regardless of the final personnel, you knew you were going to have some World Cup inexperience out there. And we still dont know how the back four is going to look. “With that being decided and the veterans no longer being part of the scene, it was about getting some sort of understanding, communication and comfort with the defence. Thats really a much more important piece considering theres not going to be World Cup experience.” Cameron is considered a central defender by Klinsmann. “Ive said that over three years I think his best position is centre back,” Klinsmann said. “And its good to know he can play right back, too, and its good to know he can play a No. 6, too. Still I think his best fit, his best game for himself is the centre back role.” Klinsmann isnt making a big deal about the teams lack of experience. Only five players among the 23 have appeared in a World Cup. “The plan is to help them in that process, to get in that World Cup with a lot of confidence and being sure that they know what theyre doing. In every training session we will work on those pieces and we will guide them through all the different things that happen during a game, preparing the best way possible for the opponents they face in the group stage already,” Klinsmann said of the defence. “Im sure theyre going to be very well prepared and they will be ready for the task. Theres always a first time in life in whatever you do. Its for some the first World Cup, though its the first of hopefully many World Cups to come for them. Im not worried about the inexperience.” NOTES: Landon Donovan, cut by Klinsmann on Thursday, broke the Major League Soccer goal record Sunday night. He returned to the LA Galaxy to score his 135th and 136th regular-season goals in a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union. The 23-year-old Ortio picked up his 19th win of the year, one off the league lead, though Hamilton snapped his shutout streak at 107 minutes and 41 seconds. Markus Granlund had a goal and an assist for Abbotsford (28-14-4), who are 3-0-2 in their past five. Max Reinhart, Josh Jooris and Derek Smith also scored. Stefan Fournier scored for Hamilton (20-20-4). The Bulldogs have just one win in their past six games and scored just three goals in those five losses. Robert Mayer made 26 saves in the loss. Reinhart opened the scoring at the 7:56 mark of the first on the power play. Markus Granlund crept to the right face-off dot to release a hard wrist shot and Reinhart was there to quickly bbag the rebound for his 10th of the year.dddddddddddd Jooris doubled the lead with 42 seconds to go in the first. Sven Baertschi was checked off the puck in the high slot, but Jooris pounced on it and beat Mayer with a deke move for his sixth goal of the season. Granlund made it 3-0 at 3:33 of the third on a short-handed goal. Carter Bancks chipped the puck to himself, creating a 2-on-1 rush with Granlund and the Finnish forward backhanded the Bancks saucer pass past an outstretched Mayer. The Bulldogs solved Ortio at 7:41 of the third as Greg Pateryns shot was deflected by Fournier for just his second goal of the year. Smith floated a shot from centre into the empty net with 45 seconds to play to round out the scoring. The Bulldogs power play unit, third-worst in the AHL, has been held scoreless in its last 32 attempts. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

MIAMI — LeBron James watched from the bench in a stylish grey suit, and with the game deadlocked at halftime, he took off his necktie. . Soon the tie on the scoreboard was gone, too. Stout defence plus Chris Boshs outside shooting and a boost from Miamis reserves helped the Heat overcome the absence of their MVP on Sunday to beat the Chicago Bulls 93-79. “We were missing a pretty big man,” Dwyane Wade said. “Theres nothing we can do to replace the best player in the world, but we just had to go out there and play team basketball on both ends of the floor.” James was a late scratch after he broke his nose in Thursdays win at Oklahoma City, and his teammates picked up the slack. Former NBA No. 1 draft pick Greg Oden replaced James for his first NBA start since December 2009, and reserves Chris Andersen, Michael Beasley and Ray Allen helped the Heat pull away in the second half. “You dont want to see guys out,” said coach Erik Spoelstra, who earned his 300th career victory. “But when guys are out, Im always curious to see how you respond as a team. Weve have several of these games that could have been excuse games, but guys have stepped up.” Bosh tied a career high with four 3-pointers and had 28 points and 10 rebounds. Wade added 23 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, while Mario Chalmers contributed 12 points and nine assists. Defence did the rest against the offensively challenged Bulls. “Were starting to put it together defensively,” Bosh said. “We got off to a slow start early in the season, but I think right now were starting to get it, starting to click.” Like the Heat, the Bulls were also short-handed, with starter Jimmy Butler a late scratch because of bruised ribs. They shot 36 per cent, went 6 for 21 from 3-point range and were called for a 24-second violation at least six times, including twice in a row. “We werent playing with a good enough thrust,” guard Kirk Hinrich said. “We were slow getting into our stuff. We didnt make quick decisions, and we got stuck fighting the clock.” Joakim Noah had 20 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks for the Bulls, who had won five in a row. “Those guys have ended our seasons a lot,” Noah said. “Youve got to hate playing those guys, and every time we play them our intensity has to be high. We did it in spurts, it wasnt good the whole time, and thats whats disappointing.” Miami, playing at home for the first time in 20 days, extended its winning streak to five games. Wade sealed the victory by sinking a jumper with less than three minutes left, giving the Heat their first 18-point lead. Earlier two of his points came on free throws after he improvised a backward somersault when fouled hard in the lane. Otherwise there werent a lot of acrobatics from the typically high-flying Heat, who shot 42 per cent and had only seven fast-break points. Contributing to the workmanlike effort was the 7-foot Oden, playing his 11th game after being sidelined by knee trouble for 3 1/2 years. He had five points and five rebounds in 13 minutes. “Greg was great,” Spoelstra said. “Hes an active player for somebody that big, and hes very intelligent. He has a good grasp of what we want to do.” The stoic Oden shrugged off the milestone of returning to the starting lineup. “Im starting to feel a little more comfortable out there, and I think guys are starting to feel more comfortable with me,” he said. “Its something we can build on. Being able to put me in that starting lineup showed some confidence in me.” James, missing a game for only the second time this season, drew a big ovation when he was shown on the video scoreboard during an early timeout. During another timeout in the fourth quarter, when the Heat had built a big cushion, he danced to music blaring over the public address system while his teammates huddled. They scored on seven consecutive possessions during a 16-2 run at the end of the third quarter that put them ahead 65-52. The catalysts were unlikely: In quick succession, Andersen dunked on an alley-oop, Allen hit a runner and Beasley banked home a basket. “It doesnt matter if LeBrons out,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. “Theyre a good team. That team has other players. Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade — those are All-Stars, too. The bench is deep. Thats a championship team.” NOTES: Spoelstra earned his 300th victory in his 448th game. Only five coaches reached the milestone more quickly, including his boss, Pat Riley, who did it the fastest at 416 games. … Wades seven offensive rebounds were a career high. … The Bulls fell to 24-6 when leading after one quarter. … Miami improved to 8-1 in February. Thomas Vaneks NHL future does not appear to be with the New York Islanders. . Newsdays Arthur Staple tweeted Monday morning that his sources indicate the 30-year-old Austrian has turned down a “substantial” contract offer from the Islanders. Staple added that the Islanders are now likely to deal Vanek before the NHLs Mar. 5 trade deadline. Newsday reported on its web site that the offer is “believed to be in the same range as Vaneks current seven-year, $50 million deal”. The Isles acquired Vanek from the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 27 in exchange for forward Matt Moulson and a first round draft pick. In 41 games with the Islanders, Vanek has scored 15 goals and added 23 assists. He has 19 goals and 28 assists in 54 total games this season between the Sabres and Islanders. Vanek is in the final season of the seven-year, $50 million contract he signed with the Sabres prior to the 2007-2008 season. A one-time Second-Team NHL All-Star, Vanek has scored 269 goals and 266 assists in 639 career games with the Sabres and Islanders. DUNEDIN, Fla. Whol… Jerseys From China . — Jose Bautista kept up his torrid start to the spring, hitting two doubles and driving in two runs Thursday that sent the Toronto Blue Jays over the Philadelphia Phillies 7-5. A day after hitting a long home run against the Phillies in his first at-bat of exhibition play, Bautista had an RBI double in the first inning off Philadelphia ace Cliff Lee. Bautista finished 2 for 2 with a walk. The former two-time major league homer champion missed the final six weeks last year because of a hip injury. Jose Reyes, Brett Lawrie and Melky Cabrera also drove in runs for Toronto. “I thought we swung the bats pretty good,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. Gibbons liked how many of Torontos hits were up the middle or to the opposite field. “Against a lot of lefties and things like that, you have to be able to do that and I think it was progress for us,” he said. Lee allowed two hits and a run in two innings. He struck out three and walked none. “Obviously Im trying to throw strikes,” Lee said. “I made a couple mistakes. The first double was, for sure, a mistake. I tried to throw a backdoor cutter and it ended up right down the middle.” “And then Bautista, I just missed on the pitch before and tried to throw the same pitch. It wasnt a bad one, its just you get into a 2-2 count with him in that situation is not where you want to be. He put a good swing on it.” Philadelphias offence was powered by a pair of home runs from bench hopefuls: Darin Ruf hit a two-run shot in the third and John Mayberry Jr. had a solo drive in the sixth. Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey allowed one unearned run in two innings. He gave up two hits, two walks and struck out two. STARTING TIME Phillies: Lee gave up doubles to two of the first three batters he faced, then stopped the Blue Jays. He is the odds-on favourite to start on opening day March 31 at Texas. Blue Jays: Dickey got through an uneasy first inning to feel good about his spring debut. The knuckleballer walked back-to-back batters with one out in his opening inning. “Im feeling a lot better than I was at this point last year, so Im hoping that will carry out through the rest of spring and opening day,” Dickey said. RUF RIDER Ruf hit a long home run off Esmil Rogers with one on and no one out in the third inning. The shot was the first for any Phillies player this spring. Ruf finished 1 for 3 with a walk. KNUCKLED Dickey worked with new battery partner Erik Kratz for the first time this spring. Kratz, a catcher acquired from the Phillies in a trade this winter, wore a first basemans glove in an attempt to have a better chance at catching Dickeys arsenal of knuckleballs. Kratz allowed one passed ball in the games first inning. “Its a hard thing to do,” Dickey said. “The game speed, and runners on — its just going to take some time. But I felt like he looked real comfortable back there. Outside of the one passed ball, I felt like he handled it pretty well.” TRAINERS ROOM Philadelphia right-handed reliever Mike Adams threw off the mound for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery on July 31. He was limited to 28 games in his first season after signing a two-year, $12 million free agent deal with the Phillies. The veteran setup reliever hopes to join the Phillies bullpen at some point in April. “It went good — really good,” he said. “It was probably an 85 per cent bullpen or so. I wasnt trying to let loose right off the bat. I was trying to get a good feel for throwing off the slope again.” Philadelphia right-hander Ethan Martin, who entered camp competing for the fifth starters job, left after facing four batters in the fifth inning with shoulder discomfort. Hell be examined by the team medical staff on Friday morning. “He was pain-free pitching, but the ball just wasnt coming out, throwing 85 miles per hour,” Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. “That was a sign for me to go out and see what was going on.” Whol… Jerseys Supply . — Brian Dawkins biggest contribution Sunday in the AFC wild card playoffs will be with his talking and not his tackling. The league announced the decision on its website Saturday, shortly before AC Milan was due to kick off against Genoa at 6 p.m. local time. The 25-year-old Morosini died about an hour earlier after suffering cardiac arrest during his teams Serie B match at Pescara.BERLIN — Ivan Perisic scored for Borussia Dortmund shortly before being sent off in a 2-0 win for the Bundesliga champion at Werder Bremen on Friday. Perisic opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when he eluded Bremen defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos with a stepover on the edge of the penalty area before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. The Croat — who was bookeed for a foul on Sokratis three minutes before scoring — earned his second yellow card for another dangerous tackle on the same player in the 47th. Whol… Jerseys China. Dortmund defender Patrick Owomoyela scored against his former club in the 72nd, when he beat the offside trap. DUNEDIN, Florida – The following players will make up the Blue Jays 38th opening day roster: STARTING ROTATION (in order of appearance:) R. .A. Dickey, Drew Hutchison, Mark Buehrle, Brandon Morrow, Dustin McGowan. BULLPEN: Casey Janssen, Steve Delabar, Sergio Santos, Brett Cecil, Aaron Loup, Esmil Rogers, Todd Redmond, Jeremy Jeffress. CATCHERS: Dioner Navarro, Josh Thole. INFIELDERS: Edwin Encarnacion, Adam Lind, Jose Reyes, Brett Lawrie, Ryan Goins, Maicer Izturis. OUTFIELDERS: Jose Bautista, Colby Rasmus, Melky Cabrera, Moises Sierra. DISABLED LIST: J.A. Happ. Dustin McGowan typically isnt long-winded. Wednesday morning was no exception when he found out the news he would be starting the Blue Jays 38th home opener on April 4 against the New York Yankees. “I was kind of speechless,” said McGowan. “I told them, thank you for the opportunity and Ill be ready.” What this decision says about McGowan is one thing. What it says about the state of the Blue Jays starting rotation is another. First, McGowan, who turned 32 on March 24 and suddenly is the author of an unlikely story. At one time the organizations highly prized pitching prospect, McGowan cemented himself as a bona fide big leaguer when he won 12 games and posted a 4.08 ERA in 27 starts for the Blue Jays in 2007. The persistent shoulder problems began on July 8, 2008, when he was forced to leave a game against Baltimore after four innings. He wouldnt pitch again that year and his rehab took him into the 2009 season. McGowan was progressing before developing a cartilage problem in his knee, which required surgery. He missed all of 2010 with a torn rotator cuff. It wouldnt be until September 6, 2011, that McGowan would pitch in another big league game. He finished the season with the Blue Jays but returned to the disabled list out of spring training in 2012 with a foot problem. Later that summer, he was back under the knife for arthroscopic shoulder surgery. It wasnt until last season, when McGowan made 25 relief appearances, that he showed he could continue to pitch at the big league level. Late in the season, he expressed an interest in trying to be a starter one more time. It seemed unlikely at the time but, then again, the fact he pitched at all last year was proof McGowan could overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. “I always had the resolve to push through,” said McGowan. “Theres no quitting in my blood. There was times I thought it may not happen anymore but it wouldnt be from lack of trying so I kept pushing hard for moments like this.” “He was one of the top up-and-coming pitchers here in this organization a few years ago and we got a glimpse of it before he had his injuries,” said manager John Gibbons. “Its pretty amazing in my mind that hes come back this far and looked this good. Were going to run with it and see where it takes us.” Really, what option does Gibbons have? J.A. Happ, like Ricky Romero last spring, pitched his way out of the rotation with four poor Grapefruit League performances (20.57 ERA) and will begin the season on the disabled list. “He had that back issue earlier on,” said Gibbons. “It hasnt been a big deal. Hes getting better but its something we think its limited him a little bit right now and its affecting him so hell go on the DL and hell get himself right and well look at it in the near future.” Disabling Happ is nothing more than a paper move, which enables the Blue Jays to carry an eight-man bullpen to start the season. Each of Esmil Rogers, Todd Redmond and Jeremy Jeffress is out of options. When Happ is activated, someone will have to go. The Jays are simply delaying the inevitable. Gibbons confirmed Redmond is the next starter in line should there be an injury in the rotation. Meanwhile, Josh Thole beat out Erik Kratz for the second catchers job behind Dioner Navarro. “Hes got something special with Dickey,” said Gibbons. “Hes caught him the last few years. Theres a little bit of something theyve got working so were going to run with that.” Thole has caught Dickey for a total of 565 innings during their time together with the Mets and Blue Jays. While its expected the second catcher is going to have to play more this year, Navarro hasnt played in more than 89 games in any of the last four seasons, the ability to handle Dickeys knuckleball is being prioritized ahead of offence. “I think hes a better hitter than he showed last year,” said Gibbons, referring to Tholes .175/.242/.216 slash line. “Hes made some adjustments but his number one job is to catch Dickey. Thats what hes here for. Well take whatever offence we can get.” Kratz has an option remaining and will begin the season at Triple-A Buffalo. “He was disappointed,” said Gibbons of Kratzs reaction to his demotion. “I mean, you expect him to be. It was a long time coming to get to the big leagues. Hed been up there a little bit with Pittsburgh and of course, Philly, and yeah, he was very disappointed and I dont blame him but the way were going to start this thing out, let Thole run with it. Our number one job, the big question mark is how good our starting pitching is going to be, weve got to take care of those guys.” It appears it will be a short stay with the Blue Jays for utility infielder/outfielder Matt Tuiasosopo, who was informed on Wednesday he wouldnt make the opening day roster. He was seen leaving Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in street clothes. No formal roster move has been made. Tuiasosopo is out of options, meaning he will have to clear through waivers before being sent to the minor leagues. If he isnt picked up by another club, he would likely start in Buffalo. The New York forward will look to build off his first career hat trick on Monday night as the Rangers welcome the Winnipeg Jets to Madison Square Garden. Coming off a 3-2 loss to Boston the previous day, the Rangers prepared for a big showdown with the John Tortorella-led Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. It marked Tortorellas first trip back to New York after being fired by the Rangers during the offseason. Tortorella was replaced as coach by Alain Vigneault, who was let go by the Canucks over the summer to create the position filled by Tortorella. Vigneault opted to shake up his lines ahead of Saturdays game and one move was putting Kreider on the top line with Rick Nash and Derek Stephan. It paid off as Kreider scored three times in the 5-2 win. The 22-year-old now has six goals and 16 points in 20 games this season after logging just two goals and one assist in three games last season under Tortorella. He credited his linemates with Saturdays success. “Those are just the kind of players they are. It doesnt matter really who you put with them, theyre so good. Ive been really lucky to have some good linemates this year,” Kreider said. Nash scored and had two assists, while Stepan finished with a pair of helpers. Defenseman Michael Del Zotto — a healthy scratch in the previous two games and five of the last eight — also scored in New Yorks fourth victory in six games. Backup goaltender Cam Talbot made a career-high 35 ssaves, moving to 6-1-0 on the season. . . He has not allowed more than two goals in any of his seven starts, the first of his NHL career, while giving some rest to No. 1 Henrik Lundqvist. The Jets visit New York looking to get their struggling power play on track. They went 0-for-6 in Fridays 2-1 setback to the Philadelphia Flyers and rank 28th in the league on the man advantage at 11.5 percent. Winnipeg also allowed its NHL high-tying fifth short-handed goal in Fridays defeat. “Our power play was disappointing. We cant get anything out of it and havent been able to through the years. Its not like its anything new for us. Finding solutions to that issue and problem is certainly a challenge for us,” said Winnipeg coach Claude Noel. Michael Frolik had a third-period goal and Ondrej Pavelec made 32 saves for the Jets, who had won the first two of a six-game road trip and fell to 2-3-2 in their past seven games overall. Winnipeg lost forward Evander Kane to a lower-body injury in the first period and he did not skate in Saturdays outdoor practice in Central Park. He is tied for second on the club with seven goals, but has not been ruled out for this game. The Jets have lost five of their last seven meetings with the Rangers, including three of the four games played in New York since the Winnipeg franchise relocated from Atlanta. Lundqvist is 10-7-6 with a 2.19 goals against average in his career versus the franchise, while Pavelec has gone 4-4-1 with a 2.34 GAA lifetime against the Rangers. EAST RUTHERFORD, N. cheap nfl jerseys china .J. — Even though they got help from the Giants , Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys took this pivotal game and all but buried New Yorks slim hopes of making the playoffs. Romo threw two touchdowns and led a drive that set up Dan Bailey 35-yard field goal on the final play as the Cowboys won 24-21 Sunday, ending the Giants four-game winning streak and denying them a place in NFL history. The victory moved the Cowboys (6-5) into a first-place tie with idle Philadelphia in the NFC East with five games left. It left the Giants (4-7) wondering about what they gave away in two losses to Dallas. Romo hit two third-down passes on the 14-play drive that covered the final 4:45 after New York tied the game on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning to Louis Murphy Jr., and a 2-point conversion run by Andre Brown. Romo hit Jason Witten on TDs of 20 and 2 yards, and Dallas got a defensive touchdown on a 50-yard fumble return by Jeff Heath. The Giants, seeking to become the second NFL team to win five straight after losing the first six, rallied over the past month to get into position to challenge for a playoff spot. They knew this was a must-win game because they had lost to Dallas in the season opener after turning over the ball six times. They also knew the Cowboys were facing questions after a blowout loss to New Orleans before a bye week. Romo and his team answered them at the end of a week in which owner Jerry Jones said coach Jason Garrett would return next season. True to form, New York tried another comeback after falling behind 21-6 in the third quarter. But Romo took it from the Giants on the final drive that started at the Dallas 20 on a cold and blustery day. He hit Dez Bryant on a 19-yard pass on third-and-8 and added throws of 17 yards to Miles Austin and 13 to Cole Beasley, the latter on third-and-10 from the New York 28. With the wind howling, a long field goal would have been tough. Instead, that play gave Dallas a first down at the 15 and Bailey converted after Romo took a couple of kneel-downs. Ziegler revealed the agreement via Twitter, saying hes “really excited to stay in Arizona for a couple more years, at least.” Under the contract, the side-arm pitcher gets $4.5 million for 2014 and $5 million for 2015 with a $5.5 million option for 2016 that includes a $1 million buyout. The 34-year-old pitcher has spent the last two seasons with the Diamondbacks, going 14-2 with a 2.36 ERA. Last season, Ziegler inherited the closers role due to injuries and struggles by others. He had a career-high 13 saves in 15 opportunities. Last season, he was 8-1 with a 2.22 ERA. Also on Friday, the Diamondbacks officially reported they had reached an agreement on a one-yeear contract with third baseman Eric Chavez. cheap jerseys from china. Chavez gets $3.5 million plus $1 million if he reaches a threshold of days on the active roster. In addition, Arizona announced its minor-league coaching assignments. They include Mark Grace, the former Diamondbacks first baseman, then television analyst before a pair of DUI arrests in a 15-month period cost him that job. The Diamondbacks kept him on as a spring training hitting instructor this year. Former major leaguer Phil Nevin will manage Arizonas Triple-A team in Reno. He replaces Brett Butler, who left to become third base coach in Miami. Former Diamondbacks catcher Robbie Hammock goes from managing Hillsboro to managing high Class A Visalia. Hammock played six seasons for the Diamondbacks, memorably catching Randy Johnsons perfect game. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

LOS ANGELES – Ryan Getzlaf breaks into a big grin when asked about the agitating antics of his longtime linemate Corey Perry. . “What? You want me to talk about that?” the Anaheim Ducks captain asks chuckling. After some gentle prodding Getzlaf opens up. “Thats part of Perrys game. I mean, hes always going to play hard, play hard between the whistles and, you know, theres always a little extra stuff going on and its stuff hes been doing his whole career. Its part of his makeup and things that fuel him to be a better player on the ice and I thought he was unbelievable [in Game 3].” On the ice, Perry is in the middle of everything. Rarely will a shift go by without him getting engaged physically with someone. “He is what he is,” said Getzlaf. “Hes not out there chirping at every guy that skates by or anything like that. Hes just a bit of a rat out there, I guess, if you want to call him [that]. He stirs the pot and he does the things that he does and that helps make him a better player.” What makes Perrys pest persona on the ice intriguing is that it differs sharply with the seemingly reclusive life he leads away from the rink. “Hes very, very quiet off the ice,” said Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau. “Hes actually shy around people. But on the ice hes one competitive man.” “If you dont really know him off the ice hes pretty quiet, he really doesnt say too much,” said Kings defenceman Drew Doughty, who lives around the corner from Perry in London, Ont. and was his Olympic teammate in February. “You kind of got to get to know him a bit more. Hes an awesome guy off the ice and I see him quite a bit in the summer, but on the ice hes just a pest out there. Hes a really good player and he likes to get under the other teams skin and when you put those two things together it kind of frustrates you.” Perry was third on the Ducks with 65 penalty minutes in the regular season. He is fourth on the team in penalty minutes during the post-season with 15. And the Kings are wary of being goaded into taking retaliation penalties. “If he starts [agitating] after the whistle then Im probably going to ignore it, but if its throughout the game, hes going to try and hit me or whatever, Im going to try and hit him for sure,” said Doughty. “You got to play physical on a guy like that. The only way you can beat him is physically. You got to play him hard and try and get under his skin too, because he gets frustrated at times.” What makes Perry somewhat different is that hes a creative pest. His prank on Jeff Carter in Game 1 – squirting water in his Olympic teammates unattended glove during a commercial break – went viral. Someone even showed Boudreau the video on YouTube. It reminded the Ducks bench boss of when Perry sprayed water at Colorado Avalanche head coach Patrick Roy at the end of the first game of the regular season when the two coaches engaged in a shouting match. Perry also made it on to plenty of highlight reels earlier in the season. During a November overtime game in Carolina, the 28-year-old broke his stick and grabbed one right out of Alex Semins hands while skating back to the Ducks bench. Semin was hanging over the boards waiting to come on as part of a line change. “I dont know if hes trying to get under peoples skin or if hes just playing like hes been playing since he was six years old,” said Boudreau. “I dont think hes a guy like [Stars forwards] Antoine Roussel or [Ryan] Garbutt, who purposely do things to tick the other person off. I think Corey just plays as Corey and if it ticks people off then thats an added bonus.” Boudreau believes Perry needs to create chaos in order to be the effective 43-goal scorer he is. “The more youre on him and the more you hound him the more competitive he gets just like when I watch Doughty,” Boudreau explains. “The more you hit him the better he gets.” “If Im not doing different things,” Perry said, “Im not going to be myself on the ice.” But how does Perry explain the double life he leads? How is he able to morph from unassuming off the ice into an annoyance on it? “Theres a switch where, when I get to the rink, it flips on,” the former Hart Trophy winner said quietly. “I can turn it off when I leave.” NOTES: Perry and Getzlaf held a one-on-one meeting after the Game 2 loss to discuss why they werent as effective. “Luckily enough we dont have to have them that often,” said Getzlaf. “Its not that often where both of us dont have a good game. Sometimes its one or the other and we can kind of pick each other up a bit. There were just some things we needed to do better. Its not like we were playing horrible or anything like that. It was just we needed to be better than we were and thats when you have those talks.” The two responded with a strong effort in Game 3 as the Ducks got back in the series. Perry scored the opening goal of the game on the power play … “We just got to take him out of this series,” said Doughty of Perry. “Hes one of the key guys on their team and we havent done a good enough job against him yet so tonight [in Game 4] we got to pay special attention to that and take him out of the game.” . As Valanciunas was whistled for a rare technical toward the end of the third quarter – a result of waving his hand at an official after being called for a foul – Lowry pulled the Raptors sophomore aside, corralling him by his jersey and patting him on the back. . The team said Bryce Harper and Adam LaRoche also had operations this week. Harper had the bursa in his left knee repaired after it had hampered him last season.NEW YORK — Between the 15th and 16th picks in Thursday nights draft came a very special selection by the NBA. Commissioner Adam Silver announced at that point that the NBA would let Isaiah Austin fulfil the dream of every young player, making him a ceremonial pick. Just over a week ago, the sophomore centre from Baylor was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects the heart. It ended his playing career. The illness was discovered during a physical for the draft. “For Commissioner Silver to even invite me here was a tremendous blessing and it just shows how much class that man has,” Austin said. “Its really been a tough week for me, and its been really rough. Ive just had a tremendous amount of support from everybody around the world, telling me theyre praying for me and everything. I cant thank everybody enough.” The crowd at Barclays Center rose to its feet as Austin, sitting in the waiting area with most of the first-round picks, hugged family members and put on a generic NBA cap. He went up to the stage and posed with Silver, just as all the drafts picks do when they are called. During the season, the 7-foot-1 Austin revealed he had a prosthetic right eye after multiple operations couldnt repair a detached retina. Austin, expected to be a high pick when healthy, said he felt he has “a great story to share.” He said Baylor coach Scott Drew has already offered him a coaching position with the Bears. “I have a whole life ahead of me,” Austin saaid. . “Im not going to sit here and Im not going to sulk about not being able to play basketball anymore, because I can still be involved with the game somehow or some way.” Austin said there was plenty to enjoy on what would have been his draft day. “Just being around all the draftees and seeing my friends get drafted, it just brings joy in my heart because I know how hard we work to get to this point,” Austin said. “Ive been through it. … Just to see how people persevere through their own problems, because everybody has their own problems. Its touching and its heart-warming, really.” Minutes after Austin made the walk across the stage, there were comments on social media. Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves tweeted: “Happy Isaiah Austin was able to hear his name called at the NBA draft. Very cool to see.” The 1991 Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard tweeted: “Adam Silver hasnt been on the job 12 mos and is already doing a remarkable job! Very classy move. God bless Isaiah Austin.” Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder tweeted: “Adam silver is such a classy man! Thats love right there. Im emotional for him. Damn I love that.” Austin is already spreading his message of perseverance. “I want people to know they can push through anything, because Ive done it,” he said. “I just want them to know they have the power within themselves to do it if they keep faith and a positive attitude.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

LIVERPOOL, N. .S. - Kelsey Rocques Alberta rink struck gold on Saturday, scoring a nearly wide-open inturn hit in the 10th end to edge B.C.s Kalia Van Osch 7-6 in the womens final at the 2014 Canadian junior curling championships. It was Albertas seventh Canadian junior womens title, and first since Jocelyn Peterman of Red Deer won in 2012. Rocques rink will represent Canada at the world junior curling championships, which begin Feb. 26 in Flims, Switzerland. “Were really excited,” said Rocque. “No kidding, its a dream come true, for sure. It honestly hasnt hit me, and it probably wont for a couple days. Its just so surreal right now.” Alberta never trailed, opening the scoring with a deuce in the third end, holding B.C. to one in the fourth and then padding its lead with a fifth-end deuce. Van Osch struck back with a double takeout to score a game-tying three in the sixth. Alberta restored its lead with a deuce in the seventh. B.C. came back to tie it with two in the eighth, and it could have been three but Kalia Van Osch was heavy with her last draw. Alberta blanked the ninth end to carry hammer into the 10th. A double peel from second Taylor McDonald kept things wide open, but Rocque missed on her first delivery, a peel attempt that left a B.C. rock in the top 12-foot. Van Osch was perfect on her draw weight, but couldnt bury her inturn draw, giving Rocque a nearly wide-open inturn hit for the title. “So close,” said Van Osch. “It was as close as we could make it and she made the last shot for the win, and thats all you ask for as a skip. But it was an amazing experience.” . Anthony Calvillo, through 20 CFL seasons, was frequently invincible and largely stoic in the heat of competition. But underneath the professional exterior he was, and is, compellingly human. PAUL, Minn.ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Gleason Fournier scored the shootout winner as the Grand Rapids Griffins defeated the Abbotsford Heat 4-3 Friday in American Hockey League action. Fournier was the eighth Griffins shooter and had a chance to win the game after Petr Mrazek came out to stop Abbotsfords Chad Billins. Fournier beat Olivier Roy stick side to clinch the win for the visitors. Teeumu Pulkkinen scored twice, giving him a team-leading 23 goals and four in two games. Calle Jarnkrok had a goal and two assists. Andrej Nestrasil had two assists. Mrazek stopped 31 shots in the win. Max Reinhart had two goals for Abbotsford (33-17-6), who have now lost three straight. Sven Baertschi had a goal and an assist, while Roy made 34 saves in the losing effort. Baertschi opened the scoring on the power play when Ben Streets wrist shot from the point was redirected between Mrazeks legs at 6:11. Pulkkinen tied the game at 16:44. After taking a pass at the blue-line, he stepped into a slap shot from the top of the face-off circle to beat Roy far side for his team-leadiing 22nd of the year. . The 22-year-old Finn gave the Griffins the lead at 3:49. Nick Jensens shot from the top of the circle was deflected by Pulkkinen, cruising through the slot. That was Jensens first professional point. Reinhart tied the game at 16:09, taking a pass from Brett Olson and wiring a wrist shot far side on Mrazek. Jarnkroks power-play goal gave the Griffins the lead heading into the second intermission. Nestrasil found Jarnkrok in the low slot and he beat Roy bar down with just 20 seconds to play. Grand Rapids thought they had doubled the lead eight minutes into the third, but the deflection in front was a high stick and was immediately waved off by referee Trevor Hanson. Reinhart tied the game with just under four minutes to go, redirecting a pass from Baertschi around Mrazeks left pad. Grand Rapids had the best scoring chance in overtime, but Ryan Sproul fired it off the crossbar midway through the extra frame and with 35 seconds to go, Cory Emmerton shot a one-timer from the slot right into Roys crest. MEDINA, Minn. – Minnesota Timberwolves forward Dante Cunningham was arrested Sunday for the second time in less than a week, booked for suspicion of making terrorist threats just days after being charged with felony domestic assault for an incident involving his girlfriend. Medina police Officer Chris McGill confirmed Cunninghams latest arrest but declined to go into detail about the allegations, saying police would release more information Monday. Cunningham, 26, was arrested early Thursday and charged with felony domestic assault. According to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court, the power forwards girlfriend told police he attacked her during an argument early that morning in his suburban Minneapolis home. The woman, who isnt named in the complaint, told police he kicked down a locked bedroom door, grabbed her around the neck and slammed her against the wall, choking her for 15 to 20 seconds during which she could not breathe. Police said the woman, who had been in a relationship with Cunningham for the past eight months, did not require medical treatment. Cunningham was charged with one felony count of domestic assault by strangulation. He was released Friday and missed that nights win over the Miami Heat, but he rejoined the Wolves in Orlando, Fla., in time to play in Saturday nights loss to the Magic. He started, scoring 12 points in 34 minutes. The Timberwolves issued a statement Sunday saying the team is continuing to monitor Cunninghams “very fluid” situation. It didnt shed light on the allegations surrounding his latest arrest, though. “We reiterate that the Minnesota Timberwolves do not condone the behaviour described in the accusations. We continue to wait for the legal process to run its course and will have further comment when appropriate.” In his fifth year in the league, Cunningham is averaging 6.0 points and 4.0 rebounds this season. He is set to become a free agent on July 1 after completing the final year of his contract that pays him $2.1 million this season. Dan Boyle and Patrick Marleau also scored, and Alex Stalock made 32 saves for the Sharks, who had lost four of six to fall short in their race for first place in the Pacific Division. Patrick Bordeleau scored the lone goal for the Avalanche, who lost for the first time in regulation since March 21 against Boston. Colorado had gone 8-0-1 in its last nine games to move into a tie for first with St. Louis. The Avalanche can win the division either by beating Anaheim on Sunday night in the regular-season finale or with a regulation loss by St. Louis earlier Sunday against Detroit. Colorado needs the Ducks to lose Saturday in Los Angeles to have a chance of finishing in the top spot in the Western Conference. San Jose is locked into the second seed in the Pacific Division and will open the playoffs at home next week against Los Angeles. The Sharks moved two points ahead of Chicago in the race for home-ice advantage in a possible conference final matchup. Despite the significant stakes in the game for Colorado, coach Patrick Roy opted to give third-string goalie Reto Berra his second start since joining the team last month. The move backfired quickly as Berra allowed two goals on the first five shots he faced and was replaced by Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Boyle opened the scoring with a well-placed shot from the faceoff circle just over 3 minutes into the game. Marleau ended Berras night 10:11 into the game with a slap shot from the slot for his 33rd goal.dddddddddddd. The Avalanche got on the board late in the second when Bracken Kearns failed to clear the puck from the defensive zone, leading to a 2-on-1 down low. Maxime Talbot slid a pass to Bordeleau, who shot a one-timer into the empty net. Colorado nearly tied it after killing a high-sticking penalty to P.A. Parenteau. But Stalock stopped Parenteau on a breakaway just after he left the penalty box. Havlat sealed the game with three goals in the third for his sixth career hat trick and first since Nov. 2, 2005, for Ottawa at Buffalo. Havlat scored on a deflection, a breakaway and then added an empty-net goal with 4:56 to play. The big performance came when he was reunited on a line with Marleau and Logan Couture and one game after he was a healthy scratch in a crucial loss at Anaheim that ended the Sharks chances at a division title. The game was also notable for the Sharks because rookie Tomas Hertl returned to the ice for the first time since a knee injury in December. Hertl got a loud ovation his first time on the ice, and he generated a few good scoring chances. Both teams also lost defencemen to injuries during the game with San Joses Scott Hannan not returning after being hit high by Bordeleau in the first period. Colorados Tyson Barrie was also hit high in the first by Jason Demers. Barrie stayed in the game for the rest of the period but didnt play after that because of an upper-body injury. NOTES: Parenteau (knee) returned to the lineup after missing 15 games. … Sharks D Marc-Edouard Vlasic sat out to rest for the playoffs. RALEIGH, N. .C. — The Carolina Hurricanes continued their solid play on their homestand by handing the Colorado Avalanche their first road loss of the season. Jordan Staal and Patrick Dwyer each had a goal and an assist, lifting the Hurricanes to a 2-1 victory over the Avalanche on Tuesday. It was Colorados first loss in seven road games this season, and Carolinas fourth straight win over the Avalanche in Raleigh. “We have a lot of respect for a team thats gotten out to the start Colorado has,” Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. “Theyve played good hockey and we know weve been playing good hockey for the past few games. It was going to take everyone tonight to play a complete game in order to beat that club, and I thought everyone was up to the task.” Carolina has points in four straight games (3-0-1), all at home, since snapping a five-game losing streak. Carolina goalie Justin Peters stopped 33 shots, while Colorados Semyon Varlamov stopped 26. Paul Stastny scored his seventh goal of the season for Colorado, which had won the teams other meeting this season 4-2 on Oct. 25 in Denver. “I have to give it to (the Hurricanes),” Colorado coach Patrick Roy said. “They played really well at the start of the game. I would say that the second half of the game was ours. We just didnt execute around the net, and I thought that was the only thing that was missing because we had a lot of chances.” All seven of Carolinas victories this season have been by one goal. “The D did an awesome job helping me out tonight,” Peters said. “(Colorado) was coming fast and hard. We talked about before the game how we wanted to protect the house and we did that. This just shows how well we can play when we stick to the process and do things the right way.” Nathan Gerbe had two assists for Carolina. Eric Staal played in his 708th game for the Hurricanes, tying Kevin Dineen for third on the clubs all-time list. The Hurricanes led 1-0 after a penalty-free first period in which they outshot the Avalanche 11-5. Carolina got on the board first at 12:47 of the first, as Staal followed a Gerbe shot by backhanding the puck past Varlamov for his third goal of the season. Colorado outshot the Hurricanes 19-12 in the second. The Hurricanes made it 2-0 on a rush 26 seconds into the second, as from the left boards Gerbe passed to Dwyer for an easy glove-side goal with Staal on the secondary assist. “In the last few games weve been building on those little details,” Jordan Staal said. “Weve been talking in the room a lot more and getting the guys aware of what we need to do to. Its been the short shifts, the strong plays at the blue line and all those little things thats keeping the other teams away from big opportunities and wearing them down.” Stastny made it 2-1 on the games first power play at 14:34, picking up the loose puck behind Peters in the crease and following Nathan MacKinnons shot. Carolina right wing Radek Dvorak left the game early in the third with a lower-body injury and did not return. NOTES: Carolina will complete its five-game homestand Thursday night against the Anaheim Ducks. … Colorado will play at St. Louis on Thursday night. … Hurricanes D Tim Gleason (upper body) missed his fifth straight game and RW Kevin Westgarth (upper body) his fourth. … Avalanche LW Alex Tanguay (knee) missed his fourth straight and D Ryan Wilson (back) his third. The 25-year-old rookie forward scored the winner on his first career shootout attempt as the Philadelphia Flyers overcame an early deficit to earn a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.LISBON, Portugal — Portugal says forward Cristiano Ronaldo has tendinitis in his left leg to go with a left leg muscle injury as the team prepares for its World Cup opener on June 16 against Germany. NEW YORK — The NHL and the NHL Players Association say the salary cap for the 2014-15 season is going up to $69 million after a year of record revenues. nfl jerseys china . In a joint announcement Friday before the NHL draft, the sides said the cap is rising from the $64.3 million upper limit that teams operated on during the just-completed season. As stipulated in the collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players, clubs must maintain a minimum payroll of $51 million. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Thursday, following a meeting of the leagues board of governors, he hoped to have the cap set before the start of the two-day draft Friday. Now clubs know the salary parameters they have to work with entering the free-agent signing period that begins Tuesday. whole… jerseys . Red Wings coach Ken Holland says hes excited to keep one of the young coaches in hockey. If Mike Babcock does not keep coaching the Red Wings after his contract expires following next season, the Red Wings can potentially promote Blashill to lead their NHL franchise. cheap jerseys . The Korea Football Association announced Thursday that Park Joo-ho will join the 23-man squad to replace the 21-year-old Kim, a Japan-based left back who has played nine internationals since Hong Myung-bo took over as head coach last year.COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M offensive tackle Jake Matthews will be the seventh member of his family to play in the NFL if he is drafted as expected in May. He knows his football lineage doesnt hurt him, but hopes that his work as a four-year starter for the Aggies is what really wows the scouts. “Its always been a little something to think about,” Matthews said of his famous last name. “Its a special situation. Now that I finally have my shot Im just looking forward to going out and proving it doesnt matter what my name is, what matters is that I can play and Im capable. And I hope teams get that from me and not just going off my name.” Matthews, the son of Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, did position drills at A&Ms pro day on Wednesday. Afterward, he met with officials from the St. Louis Rams, who have the second overall pick in the draft. Matthews and Auburns Greg Robinson are considered to be the best offensive tackles available in the draft and most believe the Rams will choose one of them. Other members of the Matthews family who have played or are currently playing in the NFL are his grandfather Clay Matthews (offensive tackle, San Francisco), uncle Clay Matthews, Jr. (linebacker, Browns, Falcons), cousin Clay Matthews III (linebacker, Green Bay), brother Kevin Matthews (centre, Tennessee) and cousin Casey Matthews (linebacker, Philadelphia). He said growing up in that environment was invaluable to his development as a player. “It helps a lot,” he said. "Its kind of like Ive been training for this whole process my whole life. Its really humbling, especcially being a part of this family with the tradition of football we have. cheap nfl jerseys. " Quarterback Johnny Manziel attended the event, but did not work out. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner is scheduled to throw for scouts on March 27. Manziel did not speak to reporters on Wednesday, but Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin answered questions about his departing star. “Obviously Ive got a different perspective than a lot of different folks from a human standpoint,” Sumlin said when asked if theres anything people overlook about Manziel. “That will always be something special.” Also in attendance was receiver Mike Evans, who also only watched the event after working out at the NFL combine last month. Representatives for all 32 NFL teams were at the event as nine other Aggies went through drills. Matthews played right tackle for his first three years at Texas A&M before switching to left tackle for his senior year. Sumlin said his versatility is one of his great qualities. “Hes such a team guy,” Sumlin said. “So mature, patient. Hes strong. Hes athletic and has been a real leader in this program since the time we arrived. In my opinion, hes not just a tackle hes one of the few guys in the country that can play all five.” Matthews hopes that returning for his senior season and playing another position will help his draft stock. “Teams can only take seven linemen in the NFL to games so youve got to have guys that can swing around and play different positions,” he said. “So knowing that I can play either tackle, I think thats something that really helps me out a lot.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

GREEN BAY, Wis. . — Jermichael Finley is remaining with the Packers, signing a new contract with Green Bay. The big-play tight end was set to become a free agent before re-signing with the team on Thursday. Packers general manager Ted Thompson, who drafted Finley in the third round in 2008, announced the move. In 2011, Finley matched his career high with 55 receptions and had career bests in yards receiving (767) and touchdown catches (8). The reception and yardage totals rank second in franchise history by a tight end, and Finley ranked third in the NFL for tight ends with a 13.9-yard average in 2011 (minimum 40 receptions). On Wednesday, Finley posted a message on his Twitter that he agreed to return to the team he helped to the NFLs best record last season, 15-1. Finley wrote, “I could not be happier to have the privilege of being a Packer for the next 2 yrs. Glad to be back with my team & coaches for 1 common goal.” The Packers were expected to consider using the franchise tag on Finley, who at 6-foot-5, 247-pounds runs and cuts like a wide receiver, but also has problems with dropping passes. Finley has played in 48 games with 29 starts during his four seasons in Green Bay, missing much of 2010 with a knee injury. He has caught 137 passes for 1,818 yards and 15 touchdowns during his career. . CLEVELAND — As the final out was made, Derek Jeter stood near home plate, resting his bat on his shoulder. . He was on deck — just as he is for 3,000 hits. Jeter pulled within three hits of 3,000 for his career, lining a double in three at-bats against Clevelands Justin Masterson, who shut down the powerful New York Yankees for eight scoreless innings and led the Indians to a 5-3 win on Wednesday night. Jeter, playing his third straight game since returning from injury, went 1 for 3 and also drew a walk from Masterson (7-6), who was backed up by two sensational plays from all-star shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera in the eighth. His quest to become the 28th major leaguer — and first purebred pinstriper — to reach 3,000 will resume on Thursday night against Tampa Bay at Yankee Stadium, his professional home since 1995. The famed ballparks, both the new and old versions, have never hosted any player getting his 3,000th hit. Now at 2,997, Jeter would be the first, perhaps fitting for the only player to reach the milestone having spent his entire career as a member of the Yankees. Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, DiMaggio and Berra didnt get nearly as close as Jeter, the teams career hits leader and one of the most popular players in history. And now, hes just three solid swings from standing alone among the Yankees legion of Hall of Fame sluggers. “Im looking forward to it,” Jeter said of his return to the big ballyard in the Bronx. "I wanted more today, but that wasnt the case. Im definitely looking forward to going back to New York. Our fans have always been pretty good when they have an opportunity to witness something that hasnt happened. “They care a lot about the history of the organization, so I would anticipate them being animated. I dont know, but I probably think it will be kind of fun.” Rookie Lonnie Chisenhall hit his first career homer for Cleveland, which took two of three from the AL East leaders. The Central-leading Indians scored two runs in the first off starter Phil Hughes (0-2), but spent most of the night wasting scoring chances. They left the bases loaded twice and stranded 13 runners. Masterson allowed three hits, struck out six, walked two and got just his second win since April 26. New Yorks left-handed hitters went 0-for-19 against him. The right-hander turned it over in the ninth to Clevelands bullpen, but reliever Vinnie Pestano couldnt finish it out and gave up three runs. Closer Chris Perez came on and got three outs for his 21st save, striking out Brett Gardner to end it as Jeter stood a few feet away. Hitless in his first three appearances, the 12-time all-star doubled with one out in the eighth. He went to third on a sharp grounder that Cabrera ran down on the first-base side of second, spun and threw out the speedy Curtis Granderson. Cabrera, who almost didnt play because of a sprained right ankle, wasnt done. With the Indians shifting right for left-hander Mark Teixeira, Cabrera went even farther into short right field before making a sliding stop of a hard-hit grounder. He popped to his feet and threw out Teixeira, punctuating his second defensive gem in minutes by pumping his fist. Cabrera has been a human highlight reel all season. “Nothing he does surprises me,” Masterson said. “It never gets old.” Jeter came in 5 for 12 in his career against Masterson, but went 0 for 2 with a strikeout and walk before his 479th career double, a Jeter-esque shot on an inside-out swing to right field. “It seems like his ball moves as much as anyone weve seen,” Jeter said of Masterson. “Hes throwing 95, 96 all night with a lot of movement. He pitched outstanding.” Jeter had to talk his way into staying in Girardis lineup so as not to interrupt his pursuit of 3,000. Following Tuesday nights game, Girardi was leaning toward sitting his captain, who just completed a three-week stint on the disabled list with a calf injury. Jeter helped persuade Girardi, who said his talk with Jeter and a night to sleep on his decision gave him a greater appreciation for the players twisted journey to 3,000. “He wants to get this done with so he can go on and be Derek Jeter, not Derek Jeter pursuing 3,000 hits,” Girardi said. "Thats the sense I got from him. If I was going for 3,000 hits, I dont know if I would want a day to think about. I would want to get back out there. “I really did sleep on it. And, no, I didnt dream about it.” There shouldnt be any doubt about Jeter playing the next few days in New York, where fans have been critical of his game over the past two years. He said he would like to reach the 3,000 plateau at home, and hell have four games to get there before the All-Star break. Hes eager to hit the milestone, and the Yankees cant wait for him to get there. “Hes three hits away,” Girardi said. “Lets just hope he gets all three tomorrow. Were excited about him getting it done.” Hughes was activated before the game to make his first start since April 14. He had been on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. The right-hander allowed two runs and six hits in five innings. Hughes was in trouble right away — some of it his doing, some of it by others. He walked leadoff hitter Michael Brantley in the first and Cabrera, who left Tuesday nights game in the fourth inning when he rolled his ankle, singled. Travis Hafner followed with an RBI single before Hughes struck out Carlos Santana on a ball in the dirt that got away from Canadian catcher Russell Martin. Cabrera broke for third on the play, and Martins throw was wide of the bag, scoring Clevelands second run. Chisenhalls homer made it 3-0 in seventh, and the Indians added two in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk and Grady Sizemores sacrifice fly. Sizemore also made a nice defensive play in the fifth, robbing Nick Swisher of extra bases with a leaping grab at the wall in right-centre. NOTES: Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez went 2 for 4 and made a diving stop of Santanas sharp grounder with the bases loaded to end the sixth. Rodriguez is hitting .397 (23 of 58) with 10 RBIs since June 18. … New York had won seven straight series, but lost an outright set in Cleveland for the first time since Aug. 2-4, 2005, when the Indians also took two of three. … The series drew 102,702, Clevelands largest three-day weekday total since July 23-25, 2007, vs. Boston. … The Indians will call up former Yankees minor league RHP Zach McAllister to start Thursday against Toronto. McAllister came over last season in a trade for Austin Kearns, who wound up re-signing with the Indians. . The 27-year-old Niskanen, the more offensive-minded of the pair of defencemen joining the Capitals, got a $40.25 million, seven-year contract. “Its a very big commitment from Washington.
