ASPEN, Colo. — Defending Olympic snowboard cross champion Maelle Ricker needs surgery after suffering a wrist injury Tuesday. The West Vancouver, B.C., native was injured during pre-Olympic training, putting her appearance at next months Winter Games in Sochi, Russia in doubt. Steven Hills, Canada Snowboards executive director, couldnt say whether or not the injury was a break or fracture and expected to release further details Wednesday. He added he expects Ricker, the defending world champion, would still be able to compete at the Olympics. “While the timing of this injury is very unfortunate, we know that Maelle is an incredibly resilient athlete that has battled back from several injuries over her career to accomplish great things for Canada,” said Hills in a release. “We hope that Maelles surgery is successful and believe that she will have every opportunity to join Team Canada in Sochi with the goal of competing in the snowboard cross event on February 16.” Carle Brenneman of Whistler, B.C., would replace Ricker if she cannot compete at the Olympics. The 35-year-old Ricker became the first Canadian woman to win Olympic gold on home soil at the 2010 Vancouver Games. She made her Olympic debut in 1998 on Canadas halfpipe team at Nagano, Japan. Ricker returned to the Games in 2006 at Turin, Italy, with the snowboard cross team. But the event ended in a crash during the final that forced her to be airlifted to a hospital. Four years later she made up for the disappointment in Italy with a gold medal in Vancouver. . Add another name to the list of potential general managers for the Buffalo Sabres. According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the Sabres have received permission to speak to Boston Bruins assistant general manager Jim Benning about their vacant GM position. Buffalo created a stir last Wednesday by firing general manager Darcy Regier and head coach Ron Rolston. They subsequently hired Pat LaFontaine as their new president of hockey operations and also named Ted Nolan as interim head coach – his second time as bench boss of the team. Earlier in the week Pittsburgh Penguins assistant general manager Jason Botterill was also reportedly given permission to interview for the Sabres job. According to McKenzie, others believed to be in the running for the position in Buffalo include Toronto Maple Leafs assistant general manager Claude Loiselle and Montreal Canadiens assistant general manager Rick Dudley. The Sabres have posted a 1-1 record since firing Regier and Rolston, splitting a home-and-home with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Their 5-16-1 record puts them last in the NHL heading into Tuesday nights games. cheap jerseys from china . Téma: Jak postupovat / Tuesday, Babcock was

The months of uncertainty and anxiousness are almost over for Ben Heenan. The spotlight has been fixed on the Saskatchewan Huskies offensive lineman since he opened the 2012 season as the CFL drafts top-ranked prospect. Although he has dipped to No. 2 in the rankings, the six-foot-four, 310-pound Heenan remains the overwhelming favourite to go first overall in Thursdays draft. “It has been very, very busy for me and my family and the media has kept me on my toes,” Heenan said Wednesday. "For the most part Im just trying to enjoy it and soak it all in. “I just want to go to a place that wants me and whatever team drafts me will want me. It will be interesting to see how things unfold.” The Saskatchewan Roughriders hold the No. 1 pick and many of their fans have made it clear they want the club to select Heenan, a native of Grand Coulee, Sask. Trouble is, the offensive line isnt a top priority for the Riders after signing free agents Dom Picard and Brendon Labatte and re-signing veteran Chris Best this off-season. That allowed Roughriders GM Brendan Taman to entertain trade offers for the No. 1 pick. But as of Wednesday no club had met Tamans asking price of a 2012 first-round pick, a future selection and/or a Canadian-born player. So unless Taman receives a stunning, last-minute offer, hell open the draft by calling Heenans name first overall, which would suit Heenan just fine. “Id have no problem staying here to play football,” he said. "It has been very, very encouraging to hear about fans lobbying for me to an extent. “Thats obviously incredible and not a lot of places get that. To have the fans behind me is a great feeling.” Heenan certainly isnt the only top draft prospect available but is one of the few whod be able to report to Saskatchewan immediately. Thats important considering the Riders only currently have 24 Canadians on their roster. Four of the top six players on the final scouting bureau rankings list have either been drafted by NFL teams or offered mini-camp tryouts, with Heenan and Laval linebacker Frederic Plesius (No. 5) being the exceptions. “I dont think we can wait for a guy we may see in a year,” Taman said. “I think you need a guy whos going to be in camp and around your team for the next two, three years.” And with Taman having already said he wouldnt take Plesius first overall, all signs point to Heenan being his man. Edmonton Eskimos GM Eric Tillman, who tried dealing with Taman for the top pick, has two first-round selections (second and sixth, overall) and much pre-draft talk had him taking Laurier receiver Shamawd Chambers at No. 2. But with Chambers, the fastest player at this years CFL evaluation camp, heading to the Philadelphia Eagles mini-camp next week, theres talk Tillman will take the six-foot-one, 245-pound Plesius, who began his college career at Baylor before transferring to Laval, second overall. The other top prospects heading to NFL camps include top-ranked Boise State defensive lineman Tyrone Crawford (Dallas Cowboys draftee), No. 4 Austin Plasztor, an offensive lineman from Virginia (Minnesota Vikings free agent) and No. 6 Christo Bilukidi, a defensive lineman from Georgia State (Oakland Raiders draft pick). The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have the No. 3 selection, but they have reportedly been discussing a trade with Calgary that would allow the Stampeders to take defensive lineman Jabar Westerman of Eastern Michagan. Hamilton could be willing to part with the pick after signing former first-round draft pick Sam Giguere, a receiver from Sherbrooke, on Wednesday. Should the Ticats hold on to the pick they could grab six-foot-seven, 305-pound Plasztor as a future selection or choose someone like the six-foot-six, 295-pound Kirby Fabien of Calgary to join the team right away. The Ticats are followed in order by the B.C. Lions, Stampeders and Edmonton again before the defending Grey Cup-champion Lions round out the first round. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were scheduled to pick seventh overall but forfeited the selection after taking Central Michigan receiver Kito Poblah in the 2011 supplemental draft. B.C. is in an enviable position of having few needs and with two first-round picks can use one on an immediate player and another on a future prospect. The Lions do need a Canadian defensive lineman to replace retired all-star Brent Johnson and either Western Kentuckys Bo Adebayo or Westerman could fill that bill. Calgary is another team with few needs and could look to either Westerman or Adebayo on the defensive side at No. 5 or Calgary Dinos offensive lineman Carson Rockhill. That would allow Edmonton to pick up Chambers at No. 6 or possibly look to Adebayo if he dropped that far. The Lions finish up the first round at No. 7 and could use the pick on an offensive lineman like Plasztor if he was still on the board. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Toronto Argonauts and Montreal Alouettes dont have opening-round picks. The Bombers first pick will be at No. 8 to open the second round, with Toronto following at No. 9 and Montreal at No. 11. But Toronto GM Jim Barker says hell continue working the phones into the draft to move up or down, depending on the circumstances. Barker added he remains in the mix for the No. 1 pick but truthfully is longshot to secure the first overall selection considering he doesnt have a 2012 first-round pick to offer Taman. “Youre always in the mix,” he said. "Does that mean were going to get that No. 1 pick? Probably not. “Were always pursuing making our team better. The key is can we come up with a deal that they feel makes them feel good about giving up the No. 1 player in the draft.” However, Barker hasnt talked solely to Taman. When asked if he had other irons in the fire, Barker responded, “Quite a few.” “The experiences Ive had, you just never know,” he said. “To say Im out of anything is probably not accurate.” If Barker cant move up, he says hell still get a quality player at No. 9. “Youre going to get a guy who is a good player and our goal is to maximize that pick,” Barker said. "We arent drafting expecting to get a player thats going to be the difference-maker in us winning the Grey Cup. “With that said, you take the player thats going to be in the best interests of your club long-term in building your Canadian talent base.” . – The Oakland Raiders have signed quarterback Trent Edwards and defensive tackles David Carter and Torell Troup to reserve/future contracts. . His agent told TSN that the deal is “virtually done” and will be official in the next day or two. The news comes with Torontos season opener set for this Saturday on the road against the Seattle Sounders (TSN, 4:30pm et/1:30pm pt). . — Kyle Blanks homered in his home debut at the Coliseum and Derek Norris capped Oaklands five-homer day with a grand slam and the Athletics snapped a season-long four-game losing streak with a 10-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday.Mike Babcock wont bend to the pressure that befalls the Canadian mens Olympic hockey team. He wont bend to outlandish questions either. The Detroit Red Wings bench boss is two practices deep with his squad and is already being bombarded — as expected — with a wide array of questions. Speaking to reporters after practice Tuesday, Babcock was candid yet focused on the task at hand. “You feel pressure because its the pressure you put on yourselves to perform,” he said. “We take our job seriously. We like to brag as a nation that we are the best in the world in hockey, but you cant just brag, (you) need to win and back it up” Its no secrett that there is pressure on Canada, not only to defend a gold medal, but also to stand behind a reputation as the centre of the hockey world.dddddddddddd. And while Babcock may worry about the high level of competition at the Olympics, he refused to worry about a question of whether it was safe to room all three goalies together in Sochi in case one of them gets sick. “You guys (reporters) spend way too much time thinking about this stuff ,” he said. “Its rare you put three goalies together in one room? Well its rare you put any three of anyone together because we all get our own room in the NHL.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

BASEL, Switzerland - Stanislas Wawrinkas prospects of playing in his first ATP World Tour Finals were damaged Tuesday by a 6-4, 6-3 first-round loss to Edouard Roger-Vasselin at the Swiss Indoors. Second-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic also lost, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) against big-serving Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, to open up Roger Federers half of the draw. Karlovic sent down 23 aces and did not need to break Berdychs serve to clinch victory. Wawrinka, ranked No. 8, struggled with his service, landing barely one-third of his first serves, to continue his struggles in home tournaments in Switzerland. For 29-year-old Roger-Vasselin, it was a first victory against a top-10 player this season and just the second of his career. Wawrinka, a U.S. Open semifinalist last month, is eighth in the points race to secure a place in the eight-man finals lineup in London next month. The ninth-placed player after next weeks Paris Masters will advance, because Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has ended his season following back surgery. While Berdych is sixth and likely to qualify, Wawrinka is under pressure from Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet, who begins in Basel on Wednesday against countryman Michael Llodra. Wawrinka, seeded No. 4, has now lost his opening match at Basel to a lower-ranked opponent in three of his past five visits. Berdych lost his first-round match at Basel for the fourth straight time, all against opponents ranked below him. Seventh-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy also lost Tuesday, 7-6 (3), 6-3, against Daniel Brands of Germany, who beat Federer at the Swiss Open in Gstaad in July. Federer, third-seeded this week, will play his second round match Wednesday against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, who beat Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 7-5, 7-6 (3). Kei Nishikori, the No. 6 seed from Japan, eased past Swiss wild card entry Marco Chiudinelli 6-2, 6-4. Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus beat German qualifier Benjamin Becker, 7-6 (8), 6-1, and Ivan Dodig of Croatia advanced after winning just two games when Carlos Berlocq of Argentina retired injured. Grant was fired a day after the Cavs dropped their sixth straight game, an embarrassing home loss to a Los Angeles Lakers team that started with eight players and finished with five. LOS ANGELES — Anze Kopitar and Matt Frattin each had a goal and an assist, and Ben Scrivens extended his unlikely winning streak with 19 saves in the Los Angeles Kings 5-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night. Justin Williams also had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who have earned a point in seven consecutive games. Captain Dustin Brown and Dwight King also scored in Los Angeles impressive return from a four-game road trip. Scrivens shutout streak ended at 191 minutes, 19 seconds on Valtteri Filppulas power-play goal late in the second period, but injured Jonathan Quicks new backup cruised to his fourth consecutive victory in his home debut. Ben Bishop stopped 26 shots and Victor Hedman had a goal and an assist for Tampa Bay. The Lightning fell out of first place in the Eastern Conference with their second straight loss. Boston passed Tampa Bay atop the Atlantic Division standings with a win over the Rangers earlier in the evening. Tampa Bay captain Martin St. Louis had an assist in his 1,000th NHL game, but the Lightning are winless halfway through their four-game West Coast road trip, with Bishop struggling in both Phoenix and Los Angeles. Drew Doughty had two assists for the Kings, who are attempting to keep pace in the tough Pacific Division while Quick and top goal-scorer Jeff Carter are out with injuries. So far, its working: The Kings havent lost in regulation since Nov. 2, and they scored five goals in a 23-minute stretch spanning the first two periods against the Lightning, avenging a 5-1 loss in Tampa Bay last month. With 31 points, Los Angeles moved one point behind Chicago and Anaheim for the overall NHL lead into a third-place tie with the Blues, San Jose and Phoenix. After joining the Kings from Toronto during the summer, Scrivens bareely played behind Quick in the first 18 games.dddddddddddd But the Kings 2012 Conn Smythe Trophy winner strained his groin late in an overtime loss at Buffalo on Nov. 12, and Scrivens has been outstanding since, allowing two goals in a road win over the New York Islanders before finishing the trip with back-to-back shutouts. Scrivens, who made his first eight appearances for Los Angeles on the road, fell just short of Quicks franchise-record shutout streak of 202 minutes, 11 seconds. The Kings went ahead when Kopitar skated onto a back pass from Doughty and put a shot through traffic past Bishop for his sixth goal of the season. After a quiet finish to last season and a slow start this fall, the Slovenian star has 16 points in his past 14 games. Los Angeles scored again on a power play late in the first period when Frattin artfully deflected Slava Voynovs long shot from the wall. The goal was just the second in 20 games for Frattin, acquired along with Scrivens in the trade sending Jonathan Bernier to the Maple Leafs. King put Los Angeles up 4-0 with a short-handed goal late in the second period, forcing a turnover and deflecting Linden Veys shot for his career-best seventh goal. Filppula scored his team-leading ninth goal during the same four-minute power play. Moments later, Brown broke in alone for just his second goal in 18 games after a steal by Frattin. NOTES: Williams got credit for his eighth goal early in the second period when he touched the puck right before it caromed off Tampa Bays Matt Carle and Alex Killorn, who swept it into Bishops net with his trailing leg. … The Lightning made their first visit to Staples Center since Nov. 4, 2010. … Tampa Bay scratched F B.J. Andy Carroll had a quiet transfer deadline day. He trained, prepared himself for his first home start of the season and got rid of some overdue baggage, finally shaving off his overgrown beard. It was three years to the day since he was the most expensive British signing in history. January 31st, 2011 changed the Gateshead lad forever. Playing and scoring goals for his boyhood club, Newcastle United, Carroll was enjoying the dream life – on the pitch. Off it was a constant battle. That Andy Carroll came with some serious baggage. Multiple assault charges finally saw him granted bail on the condition of him moving to a permanent residence, rather than a hotel. Newcastle teammate Kevin Nolan took him in and put a curfew on Carroll to help him stay out of trouble. “I said he could stay, I cleared it with the Mrs, of course, first, Nolan later reflected. She was down in Liverpool a lot of the time so we were like roommates. He was a pretty good cook. Pasta with tomatoes, chicken; things like that.” On the field, Nolan wanted nothing changed and loved making runs from midfield to get on the end of a knockdown by the big striker. Back at the family home, issues around Carroll continued when his car was set on fire in the driveway and graffiti was written all over the garage door. The Nolan family stuck by him as the midfielder revealed to the Guardian, back in 2010: “Andy has got to be indoors for 10.30pm and he has got to be in bed by 11pm. Wed already got the kids on curfews, so its no trouble to enforce. What I have learnt about Andy, though, is that hes always asleep at the wrong time, like when I get him up early to do the school run with me. He gets up at 10 to eight and we leave at five past. We then have our breakfast at the training ground. I dont know if he likes it but thats the way it is.” Carroll would later see the assault charges dropped and as he moved out of the Nolan household, he did with much less baggage. Nolan told the Daily Mirror in 2012: "When you look back on it now, it was bizarre him staying with us, but it worked. In our family, thats what we do for our friends. Ive been brought up like that by my mum and dad. “I know Andy was very grateful for what we did for him, thats why were so close. He has his family there for him but sometimes you need other people as well.” Carrolls 35 million pound move to Liverpool in 2011 was called a dream move by Nolan, who was obviously delighted for his mate, but the dream soon turned out to be a nightmare for Carroll. It was not a move that came too soon for him. It was simply a move that should never have come at all. Liverpool captured the Englishman on the day they let Fernando Torres leave. The 35 million pound figure they paid was never what Carroll was worth. It was simply a number Newcastle, on the final day of the transfer window, would allow their goal scorer to leave for. Incredibly, Liverpool took the bait and Carrolls life changed forever. Sure, there were some good moments, such as scoring the winner at Wembley over Everton in the FA Cup semifinal, but there were some tough moments too and when Kenny Dalglish was replaced by Brendan Rodgers as manager, it was only a matter of time that Carroll would be moved on. Nineteen months after signing at Anfield, Carroll was reunited with Nolan, this time down south at West Ham, agreeing to a season-long loan. “He has learned so much. There is a different lad standing in that dressing room now. There is a man who can look after himself and do the right things on a daily basis,” Nolan said. Carroll did enough last season to convince the Hammers to pay Liverpool 15 million pounds and hand the striker a new six year contract. Except, once again, Carroll came with baggage, this time in the case of a heel injury that he picked up on the final day of last season against Reading. The injury proved to be far worse than original thought and with Carroll out for months; West Ham struggled badly, causing many to panic, including the clubs co-owner David Sullivan. “Had we known he would be out for this long, we would not have signed him,” Sullivan told the BBCs Football Focus in December. “We are not a rich enough club to deal with that. You know any player can get injured, but we cant buy a player knowing he is going to be out for half the season. When we signed him we were assured by the medical staff that the very, very latest he would be back was September 1st. That would have meant he would only miss two league games.” Sullivan has every right to look after his investments but it seemed a bizarre thing to say publicly. Even if he privately believed it, it is not as if the money spent on Carroll could have gone on another player who would have instantly changed the clubs fortunes. You only have to look at the long list of strikers bought for a lot of money, in the Premier League, to know many do not work out. Injury or no injury, that label is yet to be attached to the now 25-year-old Carroll. The jury still remains out on what he can actually become. On Saturday he started his second game of the season, at home to Swansea, and in the first half showed exactly why West Ham wanted to spend that amount of money on him. Carroll was magnificent, finding pockets of space to hold up the ball and supply wide men, choosing his battles in between Chico Flores and Dwight Tiendalli, to regularly win aerial duels, and then winning two significant headers that set up the games two goals, in a 2-0 West Ham win. The beneficiary? Nolan of course. Like Carroll, the 2013-14 season had been a season to forget so far for the Hammers captain but he had no injury to blame for his torrid campaign. Nolan scored 10 goals from midfield last season and had been expected to score regularly again this season but, heading into Saturday, the 31-year-old had as many league red cards as goals this season (2). After the second red card, against Fulham in December, manager Sam Allardyce had seen enough, fining him two weeks wages (100 thousand pounds), saying: “Our captain was irresponsible. Not just today but for the future because he is suspended. Hes let everyone down and himself. I just dont quite understand where hes lost his cool and why its happened.” Nolan sat out seven games through suspension but on Saturday he was reunited with his mate, playing just behind Carroll, giving West Ham fans what they hope to be a glimpse at the partnership that can keep their team in the Premier League this season. Except, once again more baggage comes with Carroll. In the second half on Saturday he was sent off for extending a wild arm to Chico Floress head. Allardyce called it an injustice and plans to appeal against it but if that is unsuccessful Carroll will again sit out for three more games. Once Carroll returns he will have gone nine months without playing a full 90 minutes. He will have three months to not only play a pivotal role in saving West Hams season but also attempt to get on Roy Hodgsons England plane to Brazil. At the moment he appears to be completely off Hodgsons radar but in just 45 minutes on Saturday he showed why he should be more than just considered if he can play regularly. Carroll offers something completely different to the England manager, who has enough quick forwards looking to get in behind a defensive line. Carroll showed against Sweden in Euro 2012 that he can be a real handful for international defenders if the quality of the deliveries into the box is high. West Ham became the final Premier League team to score a headed goal this season on Saturday and if they can improve their crosses and get Carroll heavily involved down the stretch then do not rule out the forward making an unlikely late, successful attempt at the 23rd and final player seat on the plane to Brazil. Time is certainly running out but if Carroll can remove the personal baggage, he may well be packing his own baggage to the World Cup. The As made the moves before hosting the Washington Nationals on Friday night. Cook was injured during Wednesdays doubleheader against Seattle. Cook and manager Bob Melvin both said they dont believe the injury is serious, that its just a strain in the middle of the forearm and not anything related to the tendon. Straily is 1-2 with a 4.93 ERA in seven starts. Melvin said the team wants Straily to work on his fastball command, which has been inconsistent and led to him falling behind hitters.dddddddddddd Strailys demotion should keep Drew Pomeranz in the rotation. Pomeranz pitched five scoreless innings to help the As win the second game of Wednesdays doubleheader. Rodriguez was 1-0 with a 0.73 ERA in 11 appearances with Sacramento this season. He is coming off elbow ligament replacement surgery and last pitched in the majors with Houston on Oct. 3, 2012. Savery was 4-0 with one save and a 3.86 ERA in 10 appearances for Sacramento. Melvin also said centre fielder Coco Crisp was scheduled to have an MRI on his strained neck Friday. Crisp was injured when he crashed into the wall to make a leaping catch in Wednesdays opener. Melvin said Crisp is unlikely to play Saturday. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

ANAHEIM, Calif. — John Jaso came up big again as a pinch-hitter with a home run against Los Angeles Angels closer Ernesto Frieri, a year and five days after doing the same thing to Kevin Jepsen at Angel Stadium — a place where Jaso just loves to hit. Jasos go-ahead, two-run shot in the ninth inning sent the Oakland Athletics to a 3-2 victory Monday night. Yoenis Cespedes also went deep for the As, offsetting Albert Pujols 496th home run. Frieri (0-1) was trying to preserve a 2-1 lead for starter Hector Santiago when Josh Donaldson led off the ninth with a single and Cespedes flied out. Jaso batted for Derek Norris and drove a 1-2 pitch deep into the right-field seats for his first homer of the season and the first by an As pinch-hitter. “Donaldson hit that ball hard to start off the inning, and it kind of started there,” Jaso said. "I think Cespy just missed a pitch, too, so we definitely had some good swings going and some good momentum against Frieri. “He showed me one changeup earlier in the at-bat and got a strike, so I thought he was going to go back with an off-speed pitch — especially after I fouled off a couple of his fastballs,” Jaso added. “But he came back with another heater and left it out over the plate. My timing was a little bit better on that particular pitch, and it looked really good to hit.” Jaso has six homers and 21 RBIs at Angel Stadium along with a .424 average, the highest by any player with at least 75 plate appearances at the “Big A.” “He got a really good pitch to hit and the ball went out,” Frieri said. “In that situation, hes looking for something middle-in to drive in the air — especially when they have a man on base. He hit a mistake pitch. Dont get me wrong, he made good contact, but I was trying to go down and away.” It appeared Frieri needed more consoling from Santiago than vice versa. “I closed in 2012, so I know how it is, man. Youve got to have a short memory and forget about it,” Santiago said. “Hes going to close more games than he blows. He said Sorry to me, but I told him: No, dont worry about it, man. Were all out here battling. I could have given up a two-run homer and given up the lead in the seventh.” Santiago allowed a run and five hits while striking out three in his fourth start for the Angels after spending his three previous big league seasons with the Chicago White Sox. A two-out homer by Cespedes in the fourth was Oaklands only run against the left-hander. The Angels lost a replay challenge in the ninth after Howie Kendrick was ruled out by first base umpire Chris Segal on a grounder in the hole that second baseman Nick Punto bobbled before throwing to Daric Barton. Jim Johnson (1-2) got the victory with a scoreless eighth, and Luke Gregerson earned his second save. Jesse Chavez allowed two runs — one earned — and four hits in seven innings with nine strikeouts and no walks. Oaklands starting pitchers have yielded three earned runs or fewer in every game so far, the second-longest streak by an As rotation at the beginning of a season since a 16-game stretch in 1981, when manager Billy Martins starters were Mike Norris, Rick Langford, Matt Keough, Steve McCatty and Brian Kingman. “It certainly hurts to lose two important guys like (Jarrod) Parker and (A.J.) Griffin,” manager Bob Melvin said. “But when you have guys like Jesse Chavez and Tommy Milone that are going to step in and hold the fort down and compete at a high level, thats what we expect from those guys. So we have the depth.” Pujols, closing in on 500 homers, a celebrated milestone achieved by 25 players in major league history, has four homers and eight RBIs in his last six games after driving in only one run in 30 at-bats over his first seven games. The three-time NL MVP also had an RBI single in the opener of a 19-game season series between the AL West rivals, who have combined to win 11 division titles over the past 14 years. The two-time Gold Glove first baseman frustrated the As in the eighth by starting a slick double play on Jed Lowries grounder. NOTES: Oakland CF and leadoff hitter Coco Crisp didnt play because of tightness in his left hamstring. … Los Angeles 3B David Freese was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. He has five hits and 13 Ks in his first 43 at-bats with the Angels. . The rest of the top five remained the same as Western, McMaster, Calgary and Saskatchewan all scored season-opening wins. The one large shift was felt out west as No. 6 Regina fell out of the top 10 after dropping a 21-10 decision to UBC. The Rams finished atop the annual Canada West coaches poll and are favoured by many to take their first Harrdy Cup since 2001.dddddddddddd However, with fifth-year Rams quarterback Marc Mueller injured on the first drive, the Thunderbirds took advantage for an opening win on the road. UBC quarterback Billy Greene completed 15-of-25 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns and also led the team with 38 rushing yards. The Edmonton Oilers could be ready to deal. TSN Hockey Insiders Pierre LeBrun and Bob McKenzie both reported Thursday that there have been ongoing trade discussions between the Oilers and Los Angeles Kings over forward Sam Gagner. The struggling Kings are desperate for some offensive punch and have been exploring trade options to acquire some help. One of the names in play as to who might be involved on the Kings end – according to McKenzie – is left winger Kyle Clifford. Whats notable in this potential deal is that neither player is a pending free agent. Gagner, 24, is in the first year of a three-year deal he signed last summer with an annual salary of $4.8 million. Clifford, 23, has one year remaining on a two-year deal worth $1.075 million per season. He is a restricted free agent at the end of next season. Due to the Kings salary cap constraints, speculation is that the Oilers may be forced to retain some salary. In 45 games this season, Gagner has six goals and 17 assists. Clifford has five points (three goals and two assists) in 48 games played. . Madrid was without suspended forward Cristiano Ronaldo and the flu-stricken Gareth Bale, but not even Karim Benzema, Marcelo, and Luka Modric going on as second-half substitutes could help it break through Olimpics modest, but disciplined defence. Carlo Ancelottis team will still be heavily favoured in the second leg of their round-of-32 tie at home in two weeks. But Olimpics players went beyond merely savoring the moment, and being sure to take Madrids jerseys as prized souvenirs. “We have left the series wide open. Anything can happen now,” said Olimpic goalkeeper Francisco Solar, who made a key save to parry Madrids best chance by Isco Alarcon early in the second half. Olimpic installed extra seating at its La Murta Stadium and the small Valencia-based club launched fireworks before the start of its biggest game in recent memory. A moment of silence was held for Nelson Mandela. Olimpic arrived to the match with the nine-time European champion on an unbeaten run in Spains third division. And after Madrids lackadaisical start, it appeared to grow in confidence it could hold its own and ended up having relatively little trouble recording its eighth straight game without conceding a goal. Ancelotti said his players were not accustomed to playing on the artificial turf. “It wasnt a great game, but it wasnt too bad,” Ancelotti said. “I am satisfied. We dont have to be worried.” Also, Celta Vigo beat visiting Athletic Bilbao 1-0 to take the advantage in their tie. Levante became the first topflight team to lose to a lower-division opponent after falling 1-0 at Huelva Recreativo, while Getafe drew 1-1 at second-division Girona. With various veteran stars injured or restiing, it was a night for some of the more promising talents to shine in the wins of Atletico and Celta.dddddddddddd Atletico coach Diego Simeone left strike duo Diego Costa and David Villa on the bench for the first hour, opting for a starting 11 with just four regular starters and featuring youngsters Oliver Torres and Javier Manquillo. It was still more than enough to overpower Sant Andreu. “This team doesnt let up for any game,” said Manquillo, Atleticos promising 19-year-old right back. “We considered this cup match was like any other and we always respect our rival, no matter who it is.” Raul Garcia almost scored just seconds into the match at the modest Narcis Sala Stadium in Barcelonas northern suburbs. But he succeeded in the 13th after he volleyed Filipe Luis out-swinging cross unmarked at the far post. Arda Turan then slotted in Manquillos back pass in the 20th, and he scored again from a series of tightly knit passes in the 56th that included two audacious back-heeled flicks by Adrian Lopez and Garcia to set up the Turkey international. Villa sealed the victory in the 84th from a pass by Diego Costa. Celta Vigo also turned to a youth player to edge Bilbao in the days only matchup between first-division teams. After both sides went close several times at Balaidos Stadium, Celta striker Santiago Mina celebrated his 18th birthday by scoring the follow-up of his own initial strike that Bilbao goalkeeper Iago Herrerin did well to block but couldnt hold on to in the 71st. Celta 35-year-old forward Mario Bermejo went on as a late substitute in his first action since tearing his left knee ligament in May. Recreativo defender Ruyman Hernandez headed in the winner one minute into stoppage time to down Levante. Getafe forward Ciprian Marica used a bicycle kick to fire in a poor clearance in the 38th, cancelling out David Timors free kick that gave Girona the lead in the 16th. SINGAPORE — Panuphol Pittayarat of Thailand made nine birdies in a blemish-free round of 9-under 63 to take the first-round lead at The Championship at Laguna National on Thursday. Panuphol, ranked just 451st in the world, was a stroke ahead of a group of four golfers in second - Scott Jamieson, David Lipsky, Kim Byung-jun and local favourite Quincy Quek. The tournament, a co-sanctioned European and Asian tour event formerly called the Ballantines Championship, was moved from South Korea to Singapore just three weeks ago after it lost its title sponsor and the promoter failed to reach an agreement with a suitable golf venue. Defending champion Brett Rumford of Australia was in joint-64th place after a 70, level with Frances Alexander Levy, who won his maiden European Tour title Sunday at the China Open. The 21-year-old Panuphol earned his best European Tour result late last year when he finished tied for 18th at the Hong Kong Open. But hes missed his last three cuts on the Asian Tour. “I didnt see it coming but it did come,” he said of his 63 on Thursday. “Im feeling good about my game right now. I was just trying to hit straight out there. I managed to hole a lot of putts and a lot of them were unexpected.” Jamieson, who won his first European Tour title last year at the Nelson Mandela Championship in South Africa, also had nine birdies in his round, including a difficult chip shot from the bunker on the par-3 No. 17, his eighth hole. He had one bogey on the par-4 16th. “Ive been hitting the ball well the last couple of weeks, so it was nice to get a round where it all came together,” he said. “There was just the one mistake with the three-putt on 16, but it was pretty far away and pace putting is always difficult in Asia with the grain. Its not what someone from Scotland is used to.” Panuphols countryman, Arnond Vongvanij, was in a share of the lead at 9 under until taking a double bogey on No. 8, his 17th hole, to fall back to a share of sixth place on 65. Spains Rafa Cabrera-Bello, who has three top-10 finishes this year, was another shot back in a group at 6 under. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It made sense perfect sense that New York Yankees rookie Chase Whitley pushed all the credit toward Brian McCann after earning the first win of his big league career. After all, the veteran catcher not only guided Whitley though a punchless Kansas City lineup, he also drove in three runs with a timely double in the third inning of what turned into a 4-2 victory over the Royals on Friday night. “He told me a game plan before the game and we were able to execute it,” Whitley said. “Just follow whatever he has in store because that guy has everything. He does.” Brian Roberts also drove in a run for the Yankees, who finally gave their young right-hander some support. Whitley (1-0) had allowed five earned runs in his first four starts, and left two of them with the lead, only for his team to saddle him with a series of no-decisions. Of course, McCann helped take care of that with his bases-loaded double. “Thats a huge hit,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “Its a tough at-bat. He fouls off a lot of tough pitches, a change-up, a curveball, a real slow curveball, and he got a ball up in the zone and it turned into a double.” Dellin Betances worked around a double by Alcides Escobar in the eighth, and David Robertson retired Salvador Perez with runners on first and second in the ninth to earn his 14th save. Jeremy Guthrie (2-6) wound up with the loss, once again getting very little support. Perez and Lorenzo Cain drove in the Royals runs. “I think I threw the ball all right except for the third inning when I gave up a couple of hits,” Guthrie said. “I had McCann down to two strikes and couldnt finish him off. I threw a couple of pitches trying to finish him off and wasnt able to do that.” Making their only scheduled visit to Kauffman Stadium, the Yankees won their second straight on the heels of a four-game losing streak. They also established some much-needed confidence as they began a 10-game trip that will take them through Seattle and Oakland. The Royals figured they were catching a break during the four-game series by missing Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka, who pitched his way to a 2-1 win over the Athletics on Thursday. Whitley made them wish they were facing the Japanese star. Mixing his fastball with an effective slider and change-up, the former 15th-round draft pick allowed five hits while striking out three without a walk in the longest start of his career. Whitley had never lasted more than five innings in the big leagues. “Yeah, tonights a big night. Were all happy for him,” McCann said. “Hes worked really hard to get here, to do this.” The Yankees took a 1-0 lead on a single by Roberts in the second inning, and Kansas City promptly answered when Perez followed a double by Alex Gordon with his own RBI single. New York quickly regained the lead in the third. Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner led off with singles, and Guthrie grazed Mark Teixeira on the shoulder to load the bases with one out. Thats when McCann connected for his double to left, giving the Yankees what turned out to be an insurmountable 4-1 lead. Guthrie kept the Royals in the game, retiring his final nine hitters. His weak-hitting offence even got a run back in the fifth when Cain drove in Gordon with a double. Still, it was not enough for Guthrie to avoid his sixth straight losing decision and his 11th consecutive start without a win. In the last five, the veteran right-hander has received a total of three runs of support. “We just couldnt get that big hit to come through,” the Royals Billy Butler said. “We were putting some good at-bats together with no results. Those days are kind of frustrating.” NOTES: Yankees SS Derek Jeter got the night off. Asked whether he felt he needed it, he replied: “I never feel like I need a day.” … The Royals traded LHP Justin Marks to Oakland for cash considerations. Murakami finished 10 points above Satoko Miyahara, also from Japan, whose free skate performance vaulted her from fourth to second overall. Despite a sore ankle hindering her practice, the 19-year-old Murakami hit a triple toe-triple toe combination, triple lutz and triple flip-double toe for her first gold at an international championship event. Ahead of her first Winter Olympics next month, Murakami earned a segment score of 132.18 and overall total of 196.91. “I was anxious the whole time because of my leg,” Murakami said. “But I was able to relax when my performance starrted.dddddddddddd.” Making her Four Continents debut, the 15-year-old Miyahara produced a stellar performance which included a triple lutz-triple toe and double axel-double toe combinations for 126.26 in the free skate and a total of 186.53. “I know this will be a great start for the next season,” Miyahara said. Li Zijun of China took bronze, ahead of Haruka Imai of Japan and Courtney Hicks of the United States in fourth and fifth respectively. Kittel timed his move to perfection, with 200 metres remaining, to edge out Nacer Bouhanni and Giacomo Nizzolo in a bunch sprint at the end of the 218-kilometre (135-mile) leg, which started and ended in Belfast. The German cyclist clocked more than five hours to claim his first Giro stage win on the day before his 26th birthday. “Honestly, it was not so easy today to stay in front with the team, I lost them a few times,” Kittel said. "It was a very hard day with all the rain, and the boys did an amazing job. "The weather was very Irish I guess, and youre cold if you ride five hours in the rain. “I was really overwhelmed by all the people on the roads, it was really a big party despite the weather. Im super happy and proud about this win, its really something to have a win in each of the three Grand Tours.” Matthews finished three seconds ahead of his Orica teammates and was hoping to still be wearing the maglia rosa when the Giro moves into Italy. “I didnt expect it, its truly an honour to be wearing this jersey,” Matthews said. "We had a great team time trial yesterday and we decided to give it to Svein for his birthday. To take it today is truly something amazing. “Ill trry to keep it as long as I can, hopefully until at least stage six or seven.dddddddddddd Theres a few guys who are close to me. Its truly a massive thing for the team and for me as well.” Despite the heavy rain, thousands of people lined the route which took in picturesque rock formation, the Giants Causeway, as it wound down the coast. Two Garmin-Sharp cyclists withdrew from the race following a crash in Fridays opening team time trial. Dan Martin will have surgery later Saturday on a broken collarbone. Teammate Koldo Fernandez finished the stage, but tests afterward revealed he had also broken his clavicle. There was an early breakaway of four riders. Jeffry Romero, Maarten Tjallingii, Sander Armee and Andrea Fedi swiftly built a lead of more than six minutes on the peloton, which was led by time trial winner Orica. Tjallingii had a superb stage. Not only did the Dutch cyclist lead for most of the day, but he also powered up both category four climbs to claim the blue King of the Mountains jersey. With the peloton quickly catching the four escapees, Tjallingii made a solo break with eight kilometres to go and briefly looked like holding on until he was caught with little more than three kilometres remaining. Sundays third stage is a 187-kilometre cross-border leg from Armagh to Dublin. Monday is a rest day before the race resumes in southern Italy with a stage ending in Bari. LEVERKUSEN, Germany — Bayer Leverkusen has hired Roger Schmidt as the coach for next season. Leverkusen said on Friday it signed Schmidt on a two-year contract. He guided Red Bull Salzburg to the Austrian championship this season. Eintracht Frankfurt also had been seeking to sign Schmidt, who previously had been in charge of German second-division side Paderborn. Leverkusen interim coach Sascha Lewandowski will remain in charge for the final three Bundesliga matches of the season. Leverkusen fired Sami Hyypia three weeks ago. Thornton scored his second goal of the game with 1:30 remaining in overtime to lead the San Jose Sharks to their sixth straight win, 3-2 over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night. Marleau also scored as the two longtime Sharks shined one day after signing three-year deals that will keep them in San Jose through the 2016-17 season. “For me and Patty both to score, its a great night for us,” Thornton said. Antti Niemi made 20 saves and Joe Pavelski and Matt Irwin had two assists apiece as the Sharks overcame a 2-0 deficit to get their third six-game winning streak of the season. “Theyre our guys, and we need them when were down,” Irwin said. “Jumbo got us to within one and Patty tied it up and obviously Jumbo won it in overtime. Theyre our guys. Its just kind of ironic what happened.” Matt Cooke and Keith Ballard scored for the Wild, who built an early lead on the opener of a four-game road trip but still lost for the ninth time in their past 10 trips to San Jose. Darcy Kuemper made 29 saves as Minnesota lost for just the fourth time in 12 games this month. “We got a point against a good team in a tough building to play,” Ballard said. “For the most part we played a fairly solid game. We werent the best at times. But we hung in there and even after they got those two quick goals, I thought we responded pretty well. We just couldnt find the time to get the third one tonight.” Thornton and Pavelski combined on the game-winning play by causing a turnover at the blue line. Pavelski then fed Thornton, who beat Kuemper with a wrist shot from the top of the circle to end it with his ninth career overtime goal and first since Nov. 26, 2008, against Chicago. Pavelski assisted on both of Thorntons goals in a bit of a role reversal after Thornton helped set up many of his 19 goals in the previous 21 games. “Ive been teelling Pav, Youve been scoring too much.dddddddddddd Start passing the puck. And he finally listened,” Thornton said. “I dont too often, but Pav just made two good plays and luckily I put them in.” The Wild struck first on a nifty play by Cooke midway through the first period. Cooke deflected Thorntons cross-ice pass to Brad Stuart in the neutral zone. Cooke then beat Stuart to the loose puck and skated in on Niemi before beating him with a forehand for his eighth goal. They added onto the lead early in the second when Mikael Granlund fed Ballard for a one-timer that beat Niemi. It was Ballards first goal since Oct. 6, 2011, for Vancouver against Pittsburgh, ending a drought of 114 games without a goal. But that was all the Wild would get as they managed just 12 shots in the final 39-plus minutes. They spent much of the game on the defensive as they won just 18 of 59 faceoffs. “We lost the extra point because of the face-off circle tonight,” coach Mike Yeo said. “We spent the entire night chasing and its inevitable that they will put you on your heels and give them some momentum. We never started with the puck. That was the big story.” Minnesota dominated the opening half of the second period, limiting San Jose to one shot in the first 11-plus minutes before Thornton and Marleau delivered a day after getting their new contracts. Thornton struck first when Pavelski fed him for a one-timer that he knocked past Kuemper on a knuckler. Just 49 seconds later, Marleau scored his 22nd of the season when Tommy Wingels fanned on the original shot but still managed to get the puck to Marleau, who deflected it past Kuemper to tie the game. NOTES: Thornton has 40 career multigoal games. … Minnesota F Jason Pominville got his 500th career point with an assist on Ballards goal. … San Jose juggled its top two lines the second half of the game with Matt Nieto playing with Thornton and Pavelski and Brent Burns moving to a wing with Marleau and Wingels. The hosts of The College Football Podcast debate who deserves an invite to the BCS National Championship should OSU and Auburn win their conference championship games on Saturday. Ryan Bolta (TSNBolta) and the case for Ohio State: If in fact Ohio State completes an undefeated season and wins the Big 10 title on Saturday, they deserve to play for the BCS National Championship. An undefeated team in a power conference has never been passed over in favor of a team with a blemish on their record, and that should remain the case. Naysayers will point to a below-average strength of schedule, close victories or to the SEC right to have a team in the championship because their conference is the deepest. Those naysayers couldnt be more wrong. It is incredibly hard to go an entire NCAA football season without a loss. There is a reason only one team, also Ohio State, accomplished the feat last year. No matter the level of competition, winning every single game is incredibly difficult. Many teams would be part of the conversation if not for slip ups against lesser opponents. Oklahoma State lost to West Virginia, Michigan State lost to Notre Dame, and Stanford beat two top 10 teams but lost to unranked Utah and USC. There have been hundreds of examples this year that just because you enter the game as a favorite, it doesnt mean youll head home with a victory. Also, on the topic of strength of schedule there is one key fact that continues to be overlooked. If playing tough opponents is of such high importance, it would be Florida State being replaced in the national championship. According to Jeff Sagarins formula Ohio State has played the 61st toughest schedule while Florida States ranks 66th. Thats before OSU plays No. 10 Michigan State on Saturday, while FSU gets No. 20 Duke. Ohio State has played the tougher schedule, and that gap will grow on Saturday. Another popular argument is the big 10 being “down” this year. The depth in the Big 10 isnt what it was years ago, but the fact is it produced a power matchup in the title game. Ohio State will play a top 10 team with a vaunted defense and only one loss on its resume. Florida State gets a two-loss traditional basketball school in Duke that for the first time in history won 10 football games this season. The Seminoles are 29-point favorites over the Blue Devils. None of this dismisses Auburn from the conversation, just points to the fact if you were to have them leapfrog an undefeated team you are looking at the wrong one in the Buckeyes. As for Auburn, the case against them is simple, they are not perfect. I believe that any loss eliminates your should there be two power conference undefeated teams, but well dig deeper. Auburn not only lost a football game, but they lost by two touchdowns to an LSU program that sits No. 15 in the BCS rankings. As impressive as their win was against Alabama, we cannot just look at what theyve done lately. College football requires you to look at the whole resume, and the Tigers have a glaring two-touchdown defeat on theirs. No. 21 Wisconsin would surely be higher if not for their very questionable loss to Arizona State on a game where the referees decided the outcome by not spotting the ball for a game-winning field goal try. Northwestern was 16th in the rankings when Ohio State beat them by 10 points with ESPN College Gameday in attendance. The Buckeyes won a dog fight in their rivalry week game and would need a victory over a top 10 opponent in Michigan State to make the BCS Championship. OSU also beat 8-win Iowa by double-dights and 7-win San Diego state by 26. When comparing wins, was Auburns last-second win against Texas A&M really more impressive than Ohio State over the Hawkeyes? Id argue that is wasnt. Admittedly OSU didnt play the strongest schedule, but there is some proof that Ohio State is in fact a powerhouse worthy of their No. 2 ranking. This was still the schedule of a team in a power conference, and one that cannot be ignored. All of the SEC backers need not look any further than Alabama coach Nick Saban. After losing to Auburn Saban mentioned coaching his team to treat the entire season as if it were March Madness, as in you need to win your games to advance. The most decorated coach in the SEC admitted that a loss eliminates your team, unless of course there arent two undefeated teams to play for the championship. If not for sanctions against Ohio State last season, Alabama would have missed out on the title game under those same conditions. One other popular point is Urban Meyer successfully lobbying for Florida back in 2006. The difference then was only one team (ironically Ohio State) was undefeated heading into the bowl season. So any quotes from the former Gator and current Buckeye are taken out of context if they are being used to show who he believes should be in the title game. Whether it be Auburn, Alabama or potentially Missouri, the fact remains that no matter what conference you come from one-loss is too many if there are two teams remaining from power conferences that are chasing perfection. Mike Marshall (marshallmike) and the case for Auburn: When No. 3 Auburn and No. 5 Missouri meet at the Georgia Dome on Saturday, they will be playing for the Southeastern Conference championship. Despite their not-quite-perfect records, they should also be playing for a berth in the BCS National Championship. Sure the Ohio State has won a school record 24 straight games and is 12-and-0. But youre “going to tell a group of young men, who just went 12-1 in a most difficult schedule, that they dont have a chance to play for a national championship? Im going to need help with that one.” Thats a quote from Urban Meyer back in 2006. At the time, Meyers Florida Gators were 12-and-1, ranked fourth in the BCS standings, and outside of the national title picture. Meyer was lobbying for the Gators to jump USC and Michigan and earn a berth in the BCS Championship. In the end, both the Trojans and Wolverines lost, and Florida got its shot, beating Ohio State by 27 points, and beginning an unprecedented run of 7-straight national titles for the SEC. Ironically, this year Meyer is on the other side of the debate, lobbying for the unbeaten Buckeyes to get a bid over a 1-loss SEC champ. But if anything, his argument from 2006 rings more true now than ever before. Forget the fact that both Auburn and Missouri went from 3-and-9 and 5-and-7 a year ago, to 11-and-1 this season. Gus Malzahn and Gary Pinkel have already both been nominated for Coach of the Year. Forget that Auburns season culminated with a historic Iron Bowl win, their second miracle in as many games, knocking off the program that was gunning for an unprecedented third straight national title. Forget that Mizzou closed their season with a win over Johnny Manziel and then No. 21 Texas A&M, holding the reigning Heisman trophy winner to just 216 total yards, statistically the worst game of his career. The strength of schedule of an SEC champ should trump an unbeaten season of a team in a has-been conference. And the strength of schedules arent even close. Both Auburn and Missouri beat four top-25 teams this season. Ohio State beat two. The Buckeyes rang up wins against five teams with losing records. Auburn played just two. Auburns FBS opponents were a combined 20 games above .500 this season, Missouris 10. Ohio States? Eight games under. Sure both Auburn and Missouri lost a game. But Auburns loss came against then No. 6 LSU. They lost 35-21 at Death Valley, the place that LSU coach Les Miles says is “where dreams go to die.” They lost in the rain, at night, in a stadium in which the home team is 34-and-2 since 2009. Missouri lost to No. 8 South Carolina. In double overtime, when kicker Andrew Baggett banged a 24-yard field goal off the uprights. Hardly a blemish to throw away a season on. The Buckeyes played five road games en route to their 12-and-0 season. Those road opponents? A combined 5-and-36 in conference play. Ohio State won “the game” last week beating archrival Michigan – a team that had lost three of their last four – on a failed 2-point conversion. The Wolverines scored 41 points in the loss, despite scoring 49 total points in regulation in all of November. The Buckeyes two wins against ranked teams came against No. 21 Wisconsin, the same team that as a 24-point favourite lost to Penn State this past weekend, the largest FBS vs FBS upset this season. The following week OSU beat then No. 16 Northwestern, the beginning of the Wildcats seven game losing streak, and a 1-and-7 finish in conference play. When the Buckeyes meet Michigan State in Indianapolis, it will be their first regular season game against a top-10 team since 2009. Auburn has played three. This season. This week, Meyer has understandably changed his tone. Hes lobbying for the Buckeyes, and a chance for the Big Ten to win a national title for the first time since 2002. But, like he said in 2006, “its called winning and losing, and playing a difficult schedule.” And there is no schedule more difficult than that of the SEC. PHOENIX — For the 41st game in a row, Kevin Durant scored at least 25 points. Not even Michael Jordan ever did that. Even so, Durant would probably trade his 38 points for a win. P.J. Tucker, who had to guard Durant most of Sunday night, scored 11 of his career-high 22 points in the fourth quarter and Phoenix beat the Thunder 122-115, giving the Suns a critical victory in their drive to make the playoffs and dealing a blow to Oklahoma Citys tenuous hold on the No. 2 spot in the West. Goran Dragic scored 26 points, Gerald Green 24 and Eric Bledsoe 18 for the Suns, who shot a season-best 58.4 per cent. With Memphis loss to San Antonio, the Suns are a game ahead of the Grizzlies for the No. 8 spot in the West and a half-game behind No. 7 Dallas. Durants streak surpassed Jordans 40 in a row of 25 or more and is the longest since Oscar Robertson did it for 46 straight games in 1963-64. Wilt Chamberlain did it in all 80 regular-season games in the 1961-62 season. And Durant is totally unimpressed his streak. “I dont really care about it,” he said. “I cant wait until its over.” Russell Westbrook scored 33 for the Thunder, who lead the Los Angeles Clippers by a game for the Wests No. 2 playoff spot. Oklahoma City took its final lead, 112-111, on Durants two free throws with 2:39 to play. Phoenix scored the next 10, the first four by Markieff Morris and the last four on free throws by Bledsoe, to lead 121-112 with 20.7 seconds to play. Durant sank a 3-pointer with 12.9 seconds to go, the only Thunder field goal in the final 3:49. “Its all or nothing right now,” Green said. “We dont have a month left to try and make up. We only got a few more games, so its win or go home for us.” Tucker was a career-best 4 of 5 from behind the arc. After struggling at the line all night, Phoenix made its last eight free throws. “Everybody is trying to win at this point,” Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said. “It was a good test for us and one that these guys passed.” Phoenix won the season series against Oklahoma City 2-1. “We feel like very game we play we can win, tthroughout the league,” Tucker said.dddddddddddd “We have confidence that we can play with anybody in the league.” Phoenix plays its next three on the road — at New Orleans, San Antonio and Dallas. “Its a big win for us,” Dragic said. “Were a step closer, but were still a long way from our goal.” Thunder coach Scott Brooks said Phoenixs great shooting was not solely the result of poor defence. “Theyre a very good offensive team,” he said. “They give you trouble because theyre small, they attack, they get to the free throw line, they can make 3s, and theyre desperate right now. Theyre fighting for their playoff lives.” Still, he said, the Thunder “didnt do a good enough job closing out their shooters.” “When you have good shooters you cant have mistakes,” Brooks said, “and we had too many mistakes on the defensive end.” The Suns led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, the last time at 85-71 on Greens 14-footer with 6:10 left, and were up 92-83 after consecutive layups by Dragic and Bledsoe with 4:04 left. But the Thunder outscored the Suns 8-2 the rest of the quarter, Durants driving dunk with 13 seconds left cutting Phoenixs lead to 94-91 after three. Durant and Nick Collison scored to start the fourth quarter and Oklahoma City led for the first time since the first quarter, 95-94, with 11:06 to play. The lead bounced back and forth after that. Tuckers reverse layup put Phoenix up 111-110 with 1:52 to go. Marcus Morris sank a pair of jumpers in a 12-4 run that put Phoenix up 38-29 early in the second quarter. Oklahoma City cut it to 44-41 on Reggie Jacksons driving layup, but Tucker sank a 3, Dragic converted a three-point play then scored on another drive and the Suns were back up 52-43 with 3:53 to go and led 62-53 at the break. NOTES: The Suns are 20-0 when shooting at least 50 per cent from the field. … Dragic scored all 19 of his first-half points in the second quarter, Green scored 17 in the second half. … Phoenix plays four of its final five games on the road. But then, the Avalanche committed three more infractions over the next 3:44, and the Islanders took advantage to score two 5-on-3 goals. Somehow, Colorado survived Saturday night. The Avalanche regained their composure, and held on to beat the Islanders 5-2 — the deceptive margin coming as the result of two empty-net goals in the final minute. Matt Duchene scored twice in a 2:44 span to give Colorado that three-goal advantage. Nathan MacKinnon got the Avalanche on the board, and Gabriel Landeskog and Paul Stasny added the empty-netters. Jean-Sebastien Giguere allowed the two 5-on-3 goals, but was otherwise string, stopping 30 shots. Colorado coach Patrick Roy credited his squad for not panicking after giving up the 5-on-3 goals. “I thought we remained pretty calm on the bench,” Roy said. “We had a power play that gave us some momentum back. … And we also had (a) great save. I think (Giguere) touched it with his glove at the end. That was a big save for us.” Duchene broke a nine-goal drought to reach 101 for his career. Roy didnt believe Duchene was pressing in search of his 100th goal. “People made a big story of that, but not me,” Roy said. “He had chances.every night. It was just a matter of time. And tonight he was resilient. He went to the net, he stayed there, and took advantage of the rebound. And then the second shot was a perfect shot. Right under the bar. It was a beauty.” The win snapped a two-game skid for Colorado, and gave it some momentum going into the Olympic break. “Im vvery proud of our players,” Roy said.dddddddddddd “Hopefully, our guys have a good 10 days off.” For the Islanders it was a disappointing end to the pre-Olympic portion of the schedule. All appeared to be lost in the second period, where they looked extremely sluggish and could only manage four shots on goal. But the flurry of Colorado penalties ignited the New York offence. John Tavares scored his 24th goal of the season to put the Islanders on the board with 8:43 remaining. Just 57 seconds later, Lubomir Visnovsky added another, to cut the deficit to one. The Islanders had the momentum on their side, and a raucous crowd behind them. They also had another 1:55 on the power play. But they were unable to get the equalizer. Islanders coach Jack Capuano was frustrated by the fact that his team was dominant in significant stretches of the first and third periods, but couldnt turn it into a positive result. “Same old story,” Capuano said. “We dominated the game, and we dont win the hockey game. … We had some unbelievable chances. Give their goaltender credit. He played extremely well.” Capuano expressed hope that his club will bounce back after the time off. “We will take.three or four days and regroup, and go through some video of the first half, things that we need to work on, and try to concentrate on those areas.” NOTES: Landeskog extended his point streak for the Avalanche to nine games. He assisted on MacKinnons first period goal, in addition to the empty netter. … PA Parenteau was held without a point in his return to the Nassau Coliseum. Parenteau spent two seasons with the Islanders before signing with the Avalanche in the summer of 2012. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

RALEIGH, N.C. – Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma says top-line forward Pascal Dupuis could miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. Bylsma said Friday after the teams game-day skate that Dupuis will have surgery “in a couple of weeks” to repair his anterior cruciate ligament. Bylsma says he has no timetable for Dupuis return and its “likely that it might” end his season. Dupuis hurt his right knee in a loss at Ottawa on Monday when Senators defenceman Marc Methot hit Sidney Crosby, sending him into Dupuis. He has seven goals and 13 assists in 39 games. Joe Vitalie will replace him on the top line. Bylsma also says defenceman Brooks Orpik and forward Tanner Glass are scheduled to be activated from injured reserve before Friday nights game at Carolina. The Bengals put him on injured reserve Tuesday. DENVER — Andrew Bynum scored 22 points, Kobe Bryant added 20 and the Los Angeles Lakers opened a season-high six-game road trip with a 93-89 victory over the weary Denver Nuggets on Friday night. Al Harrington missed a three-point attempt with two seconds left that would have put Denver ahead. Pau Gasol added 14 points and 17 rebounds for the Lakers, who won for the third time in 10 road games this season and prevailed in Denver for only the second time in their last seven trips to the Pepsi Center. The Lakers took control after Nuggets centre Timofey Mozgov rolled his left ankle while scoring a bucket early in the second half. He was helped to the locker room by Chris Andersen and Julyan Stone without putting any pressure on his left foot and didnt return. The Nuggets said X-rays were negative. Two minutes later, Denvers leading scorer, Danilo Gallinari, was accidentally poked in his left eye by Metta World Peace and retreated to the locker room for a few minutes to replace his contact lens while the Lakers put the finishing touches on a 10-2 run. Gallinari was held to six points on 1-of-9 shooting and watched from the bench for the final six minutes as the Nuggets turned to their deep and balanced bench. Harrington, who led Denver with 24 points, hit back-to-back three-pointers that got them to 84-83 with four minutes remaining. It stayed tight until the final minute, and Nenes slam with 28 seconds left cut the Lakers lead to 91-89. Bynum missed a dunk with 11 seconds left, and after the officials reviewed the tape, they overturned their initial ruling that the ball went off a Nuggets player and out of bounds. As Andre Miller was about to inbound the ball, the Nuggets called a full timeout. Miller then got the ball in to Ly Lawson, who passed to Harrington, whose long-range attempt was off the mark. Matt Barnes was fouled on the rebound and sank two free throws with two-tenths of a second left. Usually, its the Lakers who are wearied after flying into Denver on the red-eeye after playing the night before in L.ddddddddddddA., and the Nuggets who are well-rested. Not this time. The Lakers were hunkered down in snowy Denver Thursday night while the Nuggets were beating the Clippers by 21 points at the Staples Center and then flying back to Denver, which was getting hit by a storm that dumped more than 30 centimetres of snow on the Mile High City. It showed as the Lakers negated the Nuggets superior speed by getting back on defence often enough to keep the game from turning into a track meet. Behind Bynums 15 first-half points, the Lakers took a 44-41 lead into the locker room after stifling both Denvers fast-break and Gallinari, who averages 17.5 points but scored just two in the first half, on free throws in the final minute. It was noted before the game that Nuggets coach George Karl finally had a roster with enough big men to match up to the Lakers size, but he said he wanted nothing to do with a matchup like that. “This team goes to the post as much as anybody in basketball. I dont want to try to beat them power vs. power, I want to go speed. I want pace vs. power,” Karl said. “Were always going to try to outrun them.” The Nuggets took their first lead, at 47-46, on Gallinaris three-pointer with 10:34 left in the third quarter, and a half-minute later Mozgov went up for a bucket that made it 49-46 and immediately hit the floor in excruciating pain as the Pepsi Center got quiet. He was replaced by Harrington. When Gallinari went out, he was replaced by forward Corey Brewer, and Bryant capitalized with six quick points until Gallinari returned to the floor. The Lakers used a 10-2 spurt to take control at 56-51 and they never trailed again. The game finally turned up-tempo late in the third quarter, but the Nuggets didnt ever regain the lead. Notes: Brown said he didnt think PG Steve Blake would play on the Lakers trip. He is out with broken cartilage in his ribs. … Brewer returned to action after missing the Clippers game to deal with a personal issue. TORONTO - Throughout his football career Swayze Waters never thought much about the significance of a jersey number. He was issued No. 94 as a freshman at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, then various other numbers by the five pro teams he auditioned for, including the No. 30 he has worn since 2012 as a punter/kicker with the Toronto Argonauts. His latest number will mean much more. Waters will don No. 34 this season in honour of his best friend, Tait Hendrix. Hendrix, 27, died recently in a motorcycle accident. Waters, also 27, took three days away from Torontos training camp to be family and friends as they paid their final respects to Hendrix. Upon returning to the Argos, Waters decided to wear Hendrixs No. 34 and dedicate the season to his memory. “For me, Ive never had a reason to put significance in a number until now,” Waters said following Mondays practice. "That was Taits number . . . hes the guy I grew up playing any kind of sport you could think of with. “Its just my way of honouring him, the life he lived, all the things he taught me and the times we had.” At the request of the Hendrix family, Waters spoke at the funeral. Waters also wrote about Hendrix on his website (www.swayzewaters.com). “First off, I just communicated to everyone there I was suffering with them,” Waters said. "Then I talked about some of the good memories I had, not specifically stories of me and Tait personally but just the kind of guy he was, his smile, his laugh, his character. “He was just one of those guys you couldnt be around and not have a good time and not smile. He had this work ethic and mindset to get better every day . . . so I left everyone with that challenge: No matter what you do, get better at everything you do every day, keep alive that little piece of Tait thats in all of us. Thats how we can honour him as we go forward without him. It will never be the same, its going to be way different but as we move forward be the best we can every day.” Trouble was, No. 34 in Toronto belonged to rookie defensive back Eric Black. However, its the number the Argos issued Black and it held no significance to him so when approached by Waters, Black willingly gave it up. Waters said hell forever be indebted to the Argos and his teammates for their support. “It was anything but a vacation,” Waters said. "But Im very thankful to the Argonauts for allowing me that opportunity to go home and be a part of that and just be with the family. “I know in this business not a lot of teams wouldve done that but its family around here and I really appreciate what everyone did for me.” Waters said the three days he spent at home were invaluable to him. “It was huge,” he said. "I think that was the biggest thing I could do, just be there. “There was a lot of laughing and a lot of crying. I got home and hugged my wife. We cried it out then went over to his house. Not a lot of words needed to be said. For me, that was a big part of it. Weve got to go on and things are going to be different but this is just one thing I wanted to do to honour my best friend.” Waters said Hendrixs death is a sobering reminder of just how precious life is. “When you go through something like this it just puts everything in perspective,” he said. “Youre reminded how short life is and that football is just a game.” Its a perspective the Argos third-year kicker plans to lean on heavily this season. “Dont get me wrong I love football, its my job and Im always going to work as hard as I can to be the best I can to help my team,” Waters said. "But football is not life. "Theres already enough pressure in professional sports. Youre playing in front of one million people on TV and 30,000 to 40,000 people in the stands. Youve got your job, your house payments, all that kind of stuff on the line. Theres no need to add any more pressure and this is one of those things that reminds me this is just a game. “Im going to go out there and do the best I can and the rest will take care of itself. Im just going to mainly take the kind of guy Tait was, work hard and get better at everything every day, into the season. Every day I put No. 34 on will remind me of that.” . Coach Jose Pekerman has until June 2 to name the final 23-man squad. Falcao has been sidelined since January. If he recovers in time — surgeons initially gave him a 50-50 chance - Colombia could be one of the real threats in the World Cup. “I am getting better and Im very happy with how the knee is reacting,” Falcao wrote this week on social media. “Im starting on the pitch with the ball, again getting used to what used to be familiar.” Falcao has been in Monaco, Spain and Portugal undergoing his rehab. If Falcao cant make it back, more responsibility for Colombias attack will rest with James Rodriguez, who plays with Falcao at Monaco. Colombias defence looks solid. It is led by 38-year-old Mario Yepes, who has made more than 100 international appearances. Colombia allowed only 13 goals in 16 matches to have the best record in South American qualifying. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Add yet another chapter to the long-running saga that is the New York Jets-New England Patriots rivalry. But, heres a new twist: Rex Ryan actually defended Bill Belichick. Wait. Say what? Well, it started Thursday when a profile on Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine published on Sports Illustrateds theMMQB.com site included a revelation from the former Jets defensive co-ordinator that suggested New England might have obtained a copy of New Yorks playbook a few years ago. Pettine said Ryan, his longtime buddy, once gave Alabama coach Nick Saban a playbook — and Pettine warned that Belichick and Saban are close friends. At the wedding of then-Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker a few years ago, Tom Brady bragged to former Jets assistant Mike Smith that New England might have gotten its hands on one of its rivals playbooks. “It didnt shock me,” Pettine told the site, “because Rex would give them out like candy anyway.” After the Jets completed their final minicamp practice, Ryan became agitated at times when asked about the story. The Jets coach refuted the suggestion that Saban — who is also friends with Ryan — might have given Belichick and the Patriots a sneak peek. “One thing I know for a fact, No. 1, I think its disrespectful to New England to say, Oh, they did this,” Ryan said. “I can tell you every single game weve ever had with New England has been decided on the field. Nobodys had a competitive advantage. Nobodys had anything else. And thats a fact.” The Patriots have won seven of the 11 games against the Jets since Ryan became New Yorks coach in 2009. Ryan said in the Jets losses, Belichicks bunch simply “outperformed us.” So, this is, of course, not quite a scandal such as Spygate. Then, came the bombshell moment. “To discredit somebody like Belichick, who is a real coach, studies his butt off,” Ryan said, “is ridiculous.” Ryan explained that every team frequently changes its playbooks, tailoring plans to specific opponents. Theyre also coded in ways that would be difficult for opponents to completely decipher. “To me, I think its ridiculous,” Ryan said. “But I think it sounds like everybody needs to talk to Pettine, because apparently hes got all the information.” Alabama associate athletic director Jeff Purinton confirmed that Saban has a copy of the playbook Ryan gave to him — and it has remained in his office at the school. Belichick opted to not comment after the Patriots practice. “Talk to Mike Pettine,” Belichick said. “I dont know.” In the interview, Pettine used the anecdote to explain why he doesnt have thick playbooks — just in case they end up in the wrong hands. Ryan acknowledged he wasnt sure if Pettine was just displaying his dry sense of humour, but was clearly irked by the whole situation. “I dont understand what hes trying to gain by it,” Ryan said. “Thats up to Mike and hes certainly free to do whatever he chooses.” Pettine and Ryan have been friends for years, dating to their days together in Baltimore. Pettine was Ryans defensive co-ordinator in New York before he left to take the same position in Buffalo in 2012. Cleveland hired Pettine as its head coach this off-season. Ryan was asked if a first-year head coach such as Pettine might consider staying out of the spotlight. “Yeah, he needs to learn to be quiet,” said a smiling Ryan, whose mouth certainly has gotten him in trouble over the years. “Absolutely.” The Jets coach then continued to lighten the mood, saying the story was being “a bit overblown” and analyzed his relationship with Pettine. “Its in a bad spot right now,” a laughing Ryan said. “Like, really dude? Seriously?” Ryan later praised Pettine for his work by his side for so many years and acknowledged that he was proud of him for becoming a head coach in the NFL. So, will Ryan reach out to Pettine to smooth things over? “I dont need to,” Ryan said with a grin. “Im going on vacation.” Hmmm. Picture it: Ryan and Belichick having fun in the sun on Cape Cod. Now that would be some plot twist. NOTES: The Jets signed a pair of “camp legs” — K Andrew Furney and P Jacob Schum — and released TE Terrence Miller, putting their roster at 90 players. … LB David Harris sat out with a hamstring issue that isnt serious. Ryan joked that Harris absence was a result of “the playbook issue.” … Ryan said hes “pretty optimistic” that RB Chris Johnson will be ready to participate in training camp next month. Johnson is coming off off-season knee surgery. Ryan suggested the Jets could use “pitch counts” for Johnson to limit his practice days. All that matters to the son of a high school coaching legend is that hes the one they selected. “Its been my life-long dream to be an NFL head coach,” Pettine said Thursday, "and however that opportunity presents itself, its fine with me. And the Ottawa Redblacks linebacker wanted to be sure his words delivered their full effect. “Its an insult,” he said over the phone Wednesday after the CFL Players Association lifted its media ban, giving its members the ability to speak openly about stalling collective bargaining talks.LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As Louisville strives to reach the high level of performance and consistency achieved by last years championship squad, the Cardinals also know that getting there will take time with a bunch of new faces. Wednesday nights game against Missouri-Kansas City could be considered a small step in that process. The No. 7 Cardinals used contributions from veterans and newcomers to get the job done in a 90-62 win over Missouri-Kansas City. Montrezl Harrell scored 14 points to lead five Louisville players in double figures. Facing first-year UMKC coach Kareem Richardson, Louisville reminded the former Cardinals assistant what he left behind to take the job with the Kangaroos. A year after they beat UMKC 99-47, the Cardinals (7-1) controlled the game throughout and steadily pulled away in the second half. “Sometimes, you dont look at what were doing because everybodys so focused on last year, which is where we need to get to because we were so successful,” Cardinals senior guard Russ Smith said. “Its going to take some time. Its a tough, empty space to fill, but I think well get there.” As Louisville continues to learn how to replace point guard Peyton Siva and centre Gorgui Dieng, it had some things to feel good about. The Cardinals manhandled UMKC 44-24 in the paint, forced 20 turnovers that led to 29 points and outrebounded the Kangaroos 49-29, grabbing 22 on the offensive end. Chane Behanan came off the bench for 11 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Jones, Smith and Luke Hancock each added 10 points and combined for five of Louisvilles 10 3-pointers. The Cardinals shot 33 of 77 from the field (43 per cent). Nelson Kirksey and Martez Harrison had 14 points apiece for UMKC (1-6), which shot 23 of 50 (46 per cent) and was 5 of 17 from long range but were never in a game that matched Richardson against Louisville counterpart Rick Pitino, with whom he spent last season during the teams national championship run. The Kangaroos were consoled with shooting fairly well against a team that prides itself on defence. That fact bothered Pitino and illustrated his belief of how far the Cardinals have to go to match last years standard. "We did some things well tonight and some things we did not do,&qquot; the coach said.dddddddddddd “We pressed well, got a lot of deflections. We just got beat off of the dribble quite a bit. That is probably our biggest weakness to date. … We have got to correct that the next few days, because this team was obviously very inferior to our athletic ability.” Louisville nonetheless helped Pitino improve to 34-9 against teams coached by former assistants such as Richardson, 39. Though Pitino supported his desire to be a head coach, he also noted the huge challenge he faced in starting his career with a team that was 8-24 last season. Compounding Richardsons task is blending in six freshmen and three transfers, two of whom must sit out this season due to NCAA rules. Things got even tougher for UMKC late in the first half when starting guard Aaron Washington injured his right knee going for a loose ball. The senior went to the locker room at halftime on crutches with the knee wrapped in ice and did not return. The Kangaroos were down 43-27 at that point, shooting a decent 46 per cent from the field (11 of 24) and only four points shy of the Cardinals in the paint (18-14). That was the only area in which UMKC stayed close to the defending champions, who took a plodding approach in pulling away from a team they beat by 52 points here nearly a year ago. “Obviously, going up against a calibre team like Louisville has was certainly a challenge for us,” Richardson said. "I was really pleased with our guys effort. That was one of the main things we wanted to come in and play hard. “But Ill tell you, that Louisville team, theyre going to be good — not going — they are very good. Despite what Coach may think and that (North) Carolina loss, they have enough talent, enough depth, to really make a run at it again. I know a lot of things got to go the right way, but theyre certainly good.” Freshman guard Terry Rozier started in place of Smith, a senior, and quickly hit a 3-pointer to spark a Louisville outside game that UMKC couldnt match. The Cardinals shot 6 of 17 from long range in the first half while the Kangaroos missed all five attempts, helping provide a cushion that reached 23 late in the first half despite 15-of-39 shooting (39 per cent). Monday afternoon, she wore the smile of a proud parent when the Canadian team marched in for the traditional flag-raising ceremony at the Commonwealth Games athletes village. “Its really an amazing experience being here, watching the athletes getting ready,” Petitclerc said. “Ive been retired six years now, so its enough distance to actually know what its like, but not wanting to be there myself because Ive done it, but really wishing the best for all of them.” The 44-year-old, who won 21 Paralympic medals including 14 gold, is Canadas chef de mission in Glasgow. She led some 100 Canadian athletes plus coaches and staff members into Mondays welcome ceremony. “Its a very new feeling for me, because as you know athletes can be very egocentric. So after 20 years of thinking about myself and my own performance, it is a great feeling caring and wanting the best for all the other athletes,” Petitclerc said. Canada is fielding a team of 265 athletes for the Games, and those in attendance Monday, decked out in their white and red Canada T-shirts and white track pants, were all smiles as the Canadian flag was raised and O Canada played. Bal Gosal, Canadas sports minister, greeted the athletes with a handshake. The festive ceremony on a sun-drenched afternoon featured a performance by young singers and dancers, some with fiddles and guitars. Susan Nattrass, a veteran of six Olympics and now five Commonwealth Games, will carry Canadas flag into Wednesdays opening ceremonies. She took the opportunity to mingle with her teammates. “Its such an honour and you want to be very appreciative. And then you also really encourage everyone to enjoy it,” Nattrass said. “Its fun. I was talking to the (lawn) bowlers today. And the rugby guys. Its really fun and its really interesting to see and meet with people and hear of their experiences.” The athletes village, which sits in the shadow of Celtic Park — normally home to Celtic FC soccer club and the venue for Wednesdays opening ceremonies — was abuzz with athletes milling about at the nearby shopping area and hair and nail salon. “Were really excited. The village has been great — feels like youre at hhome,” said Kate Gillis, captain of Canadas womens field hockey team.dddddddddddd The positive vibe was a departure from four years ago when organizers were still rushing to finish the athletes village — amid complaints of unsanitary conditions — and sports venues at the Games in New Delhi. An outbreak of norovirus, a highly contagious gastrointestinal illness, made headlines in Glasgow last week after 53 employees at the athletes village fell ill. But Glasgow officials said the virus was under control, and shut down a temporary toilet facility that was identified as the likely source of the bug. Preparation for Glasgow has been otherwise smooth sailing. There have been no grumblings about venue construction, tickets are sold out for many events, and the athletes have raved about the athletes village. The only minor concern has been about the weather in a country known almost as much for its soggy conditions as its Scotch and its shortbread. But there was no rain in sight Monday as temperatures reached 22 C. And the forecast is even brighter, calling for sunny skies and temperatures that could soar as 26 this week. The Games feature some 4,500 athletes competing in 17 sports over 11 days. Its the only fully integrated major Games, with 22 Paralympic events in five sports. Petitclerc, who carried Canadas flag into the opening ceremonies at the 2006 Games in Melbourne, Australia, won gold over 800 metres at the 2002 Games — when Paralympic sports were given official status — and then again in 2006. The welcome ceremony, she said, represented the “last countdown” before the athletes competitions begin. “So every athlete is really trying to focus on their event and getting a little bit of butterflies, so its a very important moment,” she said. "At this point, physically, theres not much they can do except for resting, so it becomes a mental situation where youre really trying to find that good place in your head and just be good. “Thats how the village and the team is important because it can provide a home away from home.” The Canadian teams goal is to reclaim its traditional spot among the top three in the medal table after finishing fourth four years ago in New Delhi behind Australia, England and host India. Canada claimed 76 total medals in 2010, including 26 gold, 17 silver and 33 bronze. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Redblacks lumberjack mascot finally has a name. The CFL expansion team announced Friday its mascot will go by the handle of “Big Joe Mufferaw.” The Redblacks received a number of online suggestions from fans, most of whom wanted the CFL clubs mascot named after late Ottawa storyteller Bernie Bedores character. “Our fans spoke and we listened,” said Jeff Hunt, the president of the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, which owns the Redblacks. "We heard that fans loved the look of our mascot and hundreds said he had to be Big Joe Mufferaw. “We like that name too because it reminds us of our citys past and fits so well into the branding of our football team.” Hunt said he connected with Bedores family about using the name. Bedore wrote several books aimed at youngsters that illustrated the tall-tale lumberjacking exploits of Big Joe Mufferaw. “Were delighted to continue dads legacy through a new series of books for kids,” said Judy Bedore, the late storytellers daughter. “This initiative will bring Big Joe Mufferaw and the history of the lumber industry in our region into the hearts and minds of a new generation of young people for years to come.” Big Joe Mufferaw was also immortalized in a famous song from Canadian country-folk legend Stompin Tom Connors. The Redblacks will kick off their inaugural season July 3 in Winnipeg, with their first home game scheduled for July 18 versus Toronto. Not exactly bursting with sentimental feelings, Matthew Lombardi makes an odd return to the state of Tennessee on Thursday night.Who does TSN work with to ensure that stadium designs are realized with television in mind?It really is a partnership. We work with the CFL head office, the local team, and the design group theyve hired, so its basically a four-pronged group that works together to share their perspectives. From the leagues standpoint, they work with us on video review, so we have to ensure we have the correct angles to support the video review system. The league also provides video for each teams coaching staff. They install a minimum of two cameras per game to shoot various angles so they can teach the players. So the league is very active to make sure that space is there for them. Its quite an active dialogue from all sides.New stadiums have opened in cities across the CFL in recent years. Are there challenges that come with broadcasting from a new venue for the first time? The game ball from the 1976 Grey Cup, which was won by the Ottawa Rough Riders.Theres no blueprint for stadium broadcasts: Winnipeg is vastly different from Ottawa, or Hamilton, or from the design thats now taking place in Regina. Each one is creative in its own way, and that leads to additional challenges. But we have a full crew on hand for the Redblacks opener, and theyll be testing everything. After two or three games, we typically have everything running smoothly. In Ottawa, we had one hiccup with our end zone camera: the only place we could realistically put it was on top of a two-and-a-half storey building connected to a condo. So we worked through it with the developers, the Minto Group, and we now have a position there that will act as an end zone camera not only for us but the CFL as well. It doesnt matter how well you plan, there are always challenges. What do you have planned for TSNs on-site panel from the home opener at TD Place? James Duthie on the TSN ddesk at TD PlaceFor the opening game at TD Place, weve got a nice little corner position down at field level.ddddddddddddWell have our TSN set there with James Duthie and Jock Climie on it, and there will be interviews with Ottawa football greats Russ Jackson and Tony Gabriel. Theyll pay a visit to the set, and were also hoping to have CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon join us for an interview as well.James is from Ottawa and hes a big CFL fan, so we wanted to include him, and Jock lives in Ottawa and played for the Ottawa Rough Riders, so we think thats a good fit to complement our main CFL ON TSN panel, which will broadcast from Toronto.Along with TD Place stadium, the entire Lansdowne Park area is currently undergoing a complete redevelopment. What are the most interesting elements of it?I was fortunate enough to produce games from Frank Clair Stadium back in the day, as well as hockey games from the Civic Centre arena, so Im very familiar with the area. They tore down the south stands, which was a good thing, and the new south stands are quite amazing. Theyve also renovated the north stands, which now look almost brand new, though theyve been there for quite some time. New seats and some paint can do wonders. And the seat colour structure, with the red, black, and light grey, certainly lends itself to a pretty camera picture.Ottawa Rough Riders legend Russ JacksonBut the best thing about the stadium is that the surrounding area will be fantastic. With newly constructed condos in the area, new restaurants, new bars, a cinema, and lots of added green space, the environment theyve created at Lansdowne Park will be a destination for people in Ottawa. That coupled with a sharp-looking stadium will make for a great experience for anyone whos planning to go to both Redblacks games and any other events held there. MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Its been a frustrating season for Chad Kackert. Injuries have forced the speedy running back to miss nine of Torontos 16 games this year. After sitting out two weeks with a shoulder ailment, Kackert returns Thursday night when the Argonauts (10-6) face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (3-13) at Rogers Centre. Kackert has been plagued by knee and shoulder (twice) injuries as well as a concussion this season. But heeding some friendly advice has helped the 2012 Grey Cup MVP put his struggles into proper perspective. “Its been frustrating but its been a learning experience,” Kackert said. “When youre not playing you have too much time to think and thankfully I got some good advice from some friends back home and have been able to find some peace and make the most out of the circumstance.” Kackert drew solace from English writer Rudyard Kiplings poem “If,” an inspirational sonnet about character and integrity and remaining true to ones self. In fact, two lines from Kiplings composition — “If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two impostors just the same,” — are featured above the players entrance to Centre Court at Wimbledon. “It kind of talks about stuff you hear about every day but the way he words it is unique,” Kackert said. "(The poem offers) perspective and that if I let anything get to my character, then Ive lost. “I kind of had to take that in and understand thats the one thing I do have that cant be taken away.” Injuries have taken Kackerts big-play potential from Torontos offence for much of this season. The five-foot-eight, 206-pound Kackert has managed just 60 carries but is averaging a solid 6.7 yards per attempt. Kackert rushed for 112 yards and a TD on 10 carries in Torontos season-opening 39-34 win over Hamilton on June 28. He ran for a season-high 155 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries in a 34-22 victory over Edmonton on Sept 28. “Hes got that explosiveness,” Argos quarterback Ricky Ray said of Kackert. "Weve seen it this year and last where he gets a crease and hes gone for a touchdown. “Thats a big game-changer. It changes momentum, it changes field position, it gets you going offensively. Just to have that big-play ability back in the lineup is going to be big for us.” Argos head coach Scott Milanovich agrees. “Kack is fast . . . and when hes playing well hes very decisive, he hits the hole and then he goes,” Milanovich said. "Thats what were looking for. “We dont want to see him out there dancing and being indecisive. We want him to get through that hole before they can close it and get north and south and run away from people.” Kackerts returns at a good time for Toronto, which can clinch first in the East — and home field for the division final — with a win. An Argos victory would give them top spot for the first time since 2007 and just the third time since 1997. “I did,” Milanovich said when asked if he told his players what was on the line Thursday night. “But theyre well aware of what the reward is.” Toronto eliminated Winnipeg from playoff contention with last weekends 26-20 road victory. Kackert and the Argos know the importance of finishing strong. Toronto was 6-12 in 2011 but 3-1 over its final four regular-season games, momentum Kackert said the club carried into last season when it captured the 100th Grey Cup. “Weve been in their shoes before,” Kackert said. "We just have to make sure were fighting for our goal more than theyre fighting for theirs. “At this point it might be easy to say we share a common goal where they might be fighting for their own jobs.” Toronto has a CFL-best 7-2 road record but is just 3-4 at Rogers Centre. However, Milanovich said the Argos formula for success is a simple one, regardless of where they play. “The things we like to think weve built our foundation on are protecting the football, winning the field-position battle on special teams and winning the penalty battle,” he said. "When weve done that, whether were at home or on the road weve won games. “Were just looking for some more consistency from all three phases.” Winnipeg has a league-worst 1-7 road record but Milanovich isnt taking the Bombers for granted. “These guys are professional football players, theyre paid to do a job,” he said. "I expect theyll play hard and play well, I dont know we can look at it any other way. “(When) youve got nothing to lose you can kind of come out and just let it all hang out and those kinds of teams can be very dangerous. Were going to have to be at our best, theres no doubt about it.” NOTES - Ray is a man with simple needs. He turned 34 on Wednesday and when asked what gifts he received, Ray said he got a set of headphones and ice cream cake . . . Argos slotback Andre Durie leads the CFL with 685 yards after catch. Thats the most ever since the league began compiling the stat in 2010 . . . Toronto safety Matt Black returns to the starting lineup Thursday night . . . Argos receiver Chad Owens has regained the lead in CFL all-purpose yards despite missing four games with a rib injury. Owens is attempting to win the combined yards crown for a record fourth straight year. Owens and Winnipegs Dave Raimey (1966-68) are the only players to have won it three consecutive years. EAST LANSING, Mich. — Adreian Payne had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and No. 9 Michigan State cruised past Northwestern 85-70 on Thursday night to stay tied atop the Big Ten. The Spartans (21-4, 10-2) are even in the standings with rival Michigan - and those two teams meet in Ann Arbor on Feb. 23. Gary Harris added 14 points for Michigan State, rebounding a bit from a poor shooting performance in a loss to Wisconsin last weekend. The Spartans shot 53 per cent from the field against a Northwestern team that came in with a sterling defensive reputation. The Wildcats (12-13, 5-7) had not allowed 80 points in a game in over a month. Michigan State was without point guard Keith Appling, who has been bothered by a wrist injury. A goal machine for the MLS team when healthy, the former striker is back in his native Netherlands these days.COLUMBUS, Ohio — Patience is a virtue in hockey, too. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 24 shots and flu-weakened James Wisniewski had a goal and two assists to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 4-1 victory over the struggling New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. Nothing much happened in the first 26 minutes of play, but the Blue Jackets adhered to their game plan and in the end it paid huge dividends. “We kind of just stuck with it,” said Cam Atkinson, who scored an unassisted goal for what proved to be the winner. “Theyre a trap team so whoever broke down first, the other teams going to capitalize. A big power-play goal by Dubie kind of got the ball rolling for us.” Brandon Dubinsky had a goal and an assist and Marian Gaborik added an empty-netter for the Blue Jackets, who won for the second time at home after losing four games in a row. They are 13-3-3 in their last 19 home games. “We played a smart, systematic game — thats what the Devils do,” Columbus coach Todd Richards said. “It was a little bit of a chess match going back and forth. I like the way we managed the puck and managed our shifts. There just wasnt a lot going on and you have to be comfortable playing that game. Patience is a good way to describe it.” Leading 2-1, the Blue Jackets made it a two-goal lead at 4:12 of the third. The Devils had a bad turnover in their defensive zone, with Wisniewski stepping across the blue line and almost pushing the puck toward the net. The puck hit the stick of defenceman Mark Fayne and went through to goalie Corey Schneider before tumbling over the goal line. That was more than enough of a cushion for Bobrovsky, last years Vezina Trophy winner as the NHLs top goalie. He came in with just two wins despite a .921 save percentage while starting the first seven games. He made several solid saves in the second period, in particular, but wasnt tested much in the third. “Obviously, Bob was a rock for us tonight,” Atkinson said. The loss dropped the Devils to 0-5-2 on the road and 1-5-3 on the season. They had finally picked up their first win with a 4-0 victory on Saturday that ended a club-record, season-opening seven-game winless streak. “We definitely wanted to build off that win. We started that way with the power-play goal (by Michael Ryder), but we didnt do it,” captain Bryce Salvador saidd.dddddddddddd Asked what the teams problem was on the road, Salvador said, “I dont know. If we knew, wed definitely address it and fix it.” Coach Peter DeBoer was left to explain another defeat. “We turned the puck over in our own zone a couple of times and they banged it in,” he said. “Were all searching for answers. The bottom line is, when you go on the road and play these teams — and thats a big strong team — you have to have 20 guys prepared to be in the fight and win battles. You cant go in with 15 or 16.” The Devils led 1-0 after Ryders power-play goal in the second period, but Dubinsky responded with a man-advantage goal of his own. Atkinson and Wisniewski, who didnt come out for the morning skate he was so sick, each added unassisted goals. “I woke up at 6 a.m. and (was really sick),” Wisniewski said. “We showed a lot of character in the way we played. It took us a while to get going, but we found a way to win.” The Blue Jackets took a 2-1 lead at 15:30 of the second when Atkinson skated toward the high slot. His quick backhander made it through heavy traffic for his third of the season. After Wisniewskis goal, Gaborik scored his fourth on an empty net with 35 seconds left in the game. The Blue Jackets are a different team from when they couldnt gain a point on the road a week ago. “The big word for me is urgency,” Dubinsky said. “Were a lot more urgent in our game. Were putting long stretches of (good) time together. If you look through those losses, we had stretches where we were playing good but just not for long enough. Over the last couple of games, weve just dug deep and played complete games.” NOTES: New Jersey F Jaromir Jagr played in his 1,400th NHL game. He is the active leader in goals (683, 10th all-time), assists (1,011, 12th) and points (1,694, 8th). … The Blue Jackets are 29-0-0 since Jan. 9, 2012 when leading after two periods. … The Devils allowed assistant coach Mike Foligno to fly to Columbus on Sunday so he could spend time with his son Nick, a Blue Jackets forward, his wife and new granddaughter Milana, diagnosed with a heart condition soon after her Oct. 14 birth. … The Devils fell to 1-2-3 when scoring first, while the Blue Jackets are 3-1-0 when down 1-0. … It was Columbus D David Savards 23rd birthday. … Schneider had 20 saves for the Devils. Téma: Jak postupovat / e more options," Van Gaal said

The Ottawa Senators are having a bit of an attendance issue in the early part of this season and Tuesday nights result in Philadelphia certainly wont help put more people in the seats. However, there will be a 2-for-1 promotion for Wednesdays home game against the Minnesota Wild. No, there wont be a discount on tickets for this game, but fans will get a chance to boo two villains for the price of one. And considering how ornery and agitated Sens fans are these days, this could be a perfect outlet to vent their frustrations. Dany Heatley and Matt Cooke roll into town as members of the Wild, meaning they would only need Alexei Yashin to centre their line to make it the most hated visiting trio in Sens franchise history. Based on recent history, Heatley and Cooke could very well be Villains 1 and 1A for the Sens fan base. So which player will receive the louder boos tonight? Lets analyze the case for both Heatley and Cooke. Dany Heatley The Dany Heatley saga is well-documented in this town, after the sniper demanded a trade in the summer of 2009. He cited a “diminished role” under head coach Cory Clouston as the catalyst for his departure. When Heatley made his first return to Ottawa on December 2, 2010, he was clearly public enemy No. 1 in this city. The Ottawa Sun ran a headline that screamed Suck It Up Princess and was accompanied by a large photo of Heatley with a super-imposed baby pacifier in his mouth. The sub-headline elegantly stated Heatley still loved by children…….in Africa. Roy MacGregor had the following passage in his Globe and Mail story that day, which perfectly captured the sentiment of the city towards their former hero. “Dany Heatley screwed up the federal by-elections. Dany Heatley is causing area house prices to drop. Dany Heatley is behind this week-long spit that passes for weather around here…Welcome to Ottawa on Dany Heatley Day in the nations capital, the day the San Jose Sharks leading scorer gets blamed for, as the Bible might put it, every little sparrow that falls.” That night, fans showed up with old No. 15 jerseys that had the Heatley name plate altered to just spell “H-A-T-E”. At one point during the game, a handful of fans came down and threw Heatley jerseys onto the ice in a staged protest. Urinals had Heatley action figures in them, giving a new meaning to the term number-one winger. Ottawa has never had an evening quite like that and unfortunately for the home team, Heatley and his Sharks skated away with a 4-0 win. But since leaving Ottawa, its not like Heatley has made Ottawa fans wish he stayed. His goal production has diminished in each of the last five years, going from 39 to 26 to 24 to 11. And last night at the Bell Centre, he scored a meaningless goal with only two seconds left in regulation time – only his third marker of the season. And for a player who once complained about his role on a team, its interesting to note that Heatley is playing only 14 minutes a night this season under Mike Yeo, marking the lowest ice time of his NHL career. Heatley is no longer a front-line player in the NHL and, with his contract expiring at the end of this season, it will be interesting to see how many offers he receives as a free agent. Ironically, this is the final year of the six-year deal he signed with the Sens in the fall of 2007. The terms of that contract called for him to receive a $4 million bonus on July 1, 2009, which the Senators grudgingly paid, even after Heatley had demanded a trade and refused to accept one to Edmonton. Owner Eugene Melynk was so incensed with that turn of events that he filed a grievance against Heatley and that case was only resolved in the past couple of weeks, although the terms of the settlement were not disclosed. So the book on Heatley is virtually closed for Sens fans. It seems like the pitchforks and torches have been put away and the hatred towards Heatley has been replaced with some level of indifference. Matt Cooke Matt Cooke could receive the lions share of boos tonight because the wound he caused is still fresh in the minds of Sens fans. It was only nine months ago that Cookes skate blade sliced the achilles tendon of Erik Karlsson in a game at Pittsburgh. At the time, Karlsson was arguably the most dynamic player in the game and since coming back from the injury, he has only shown flashes of his former brilliance. This will actually be Cookes fourth visit to Ottawa since the incident occurred and when he returned for his first visit in April, there were Wanted posters that were circulating with his name and face on it. Sens fans wanted Cooke to pay for his recklessness, with some suggesting he deliberately caused the injury. Even Eugene Melnyk went on the record to say he would consider launching an independent investigation into the matter to prove that Cookes actions were intentional. To Cookes credit, he faced the media and answered all of the questions about the incident and adamantly denied he purposely tried to slice Karlssons leg. And to Karlssons credit, he completely downplayed the situation when the two faced off in their second-round playoff series last spring. The Sens defenceman likely holds some deep-rooted anger towards Cooke, but he has done a very good job of masking it and trying to defuse the situation. Still, Sens fans and management cant help but wonder how good Karlsson would be if that incident hadnt occurred. And if Karlsson never regains his Norris Trophy form, Cookes ranking on the villain list will stay firmly at the top. Conclusion If I had to place my bet, I would think that Heatley would receive more boos than Cooke – if only because the fan base still hates the fact that he demanded a trade and had five years left on his contract. And in the case of Cooke, you can make the argument that what he did was an accident; whereas Heatleys decision was calculated and intentional. Both players had a negative impact on the Sens franchise, but only one of them was on the teams payroll when he chose his course of action. But while the Heatley vs. Cooke argument is debatable, we can probably agree on one thing: If the Sens dont play well tonight, they will be the ones getting the loudest boos from the hometown crowd. Today, BarDown takes you behind the scenes inside TSNs TradeCentre war room. To get things started, heres a little photo tour to get you acquainted with all the main characters. When TSNs coverage hit the airwaves at exactly 8 a.m. this morning, there were eight people in front of the camera and a small army gathered behind it. With a massive crew of Insiders, analysts, news breakers, producers, photographers, stage managers, camera operators, lighting techs, and a solitary music man, the situation is all hands on deck.Taking the show to air is TSNs team of producers and directors. Teeing up a 12-hour show takes superhuman organizational skills. That must be why they get to watch so many TVs.Keeping all the bodies in line is TSN stage manager Ellen Pfeffer. She does a lot of yelling. When youre breaking all the days news, everybody wants a piece of the action. Hidden in the corner is an extra camera for live news interviews. Here, hockey analyst Jamie McLennan limbers up for his first hit of the day.Providing musical accompaniment today is TSNs own musical genius Lester McLean. The songwriter behind the famed “Puck Over Glass” viral video, Lester ushers each segment into commercial with a timely tune focused on the big names in play. His biggest hit of the morning thus far is a ditty about all the rubber that Roberto Luongo is sure to face now that hes back in Florida.Let there be light! Keeping the studio bright under the warm glow of 250 beaming bulbs is TSNs own Seth Goldberg.Because the TSN team couldnt survive without some sweet, cinnamon sustenance. (Sports Network) – Make no mistake, the Chicago Bulls are in a dogfight now. The top-seeded Bulls were a prohibitive favorite over the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals before superstar Derrick Rose suffered a torn ACL late in a Game 1 rout. Now Chicago is fighting for its playoff life without Rose as the series shifts to Philadelphia for Game 3 on Friday. Watch the game live on TSN2 now. The 76ers found a way to turn out the lights on a Bulls team trying to rally without their superstar on Tuesday. They shot em out. Jrue Holiday, Lou Williams and Evan Turner combined to score 65 points in Game 2 as Philadelphia shot nearly 60 percent from the floor to stun Chicago 109-92 and even their first-round series at a game apiece. The Bulls, of course, won the series opener on Saturday but lost the reigning MVP Rose for the rest of the season to a torn ligament in his left knee. Tuesday was a different story as the Sixers became the first No. 8 seed in the East to win a game on the road since 2003. Holiday scored 26 points, Williams had 20 off the bench and Turner added 19 for the Sixers, who shot 59 percent for the game and led by as many as 24 down the stretch. “A wonderful win,” said Sixers coach Doug Collins. Philadelphia shot better than 68 percent while outscoring the Bulls 36-14 in a third quarter punctuated by alley-oop dunks and 11 fast-break points. “The third quarter was the game,” said Bulls coach Tomm Thibodeau.dddddddddddd “They got into the open floor and crushed us off isolation. We have to come back with a lot more fight.” Joakim Noah scored 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting in Roses absence and John Lucas had 15. C.J. Watson started for Rose, who watched the game from a United Center booth, and had 12 points. The Bulls went 18-9 without Rose in regular season as their star point guard battled a litany of injuries, but struggled to stop the hard-charging Sixers in the second half. “Were capable of playing a lot better than we did,” Thibodeau said. “It starts with me. I have to get us ready to play better. We have a couple of days to get it right.” Thibodeau was especially concerned about his team losing its identity — rebounding and defense. “Defense and rebounding, thats the whole key,” said Thibodeau. “The big thing was they got into the open floor. They got easy baskets. You get easy baskets early in the game, youre going to get confidence. When a team gets confidence, theyre much harder to shut down.” On the injury for the Sixers, defensive stalwart Andre Iguodala has been limited in the series with a sore right Achilles but will continue to play. These two rivals have met in postseason twice before, in the East semifinals in back-to-back years (1990 and 91) during the Michael Jordan-era with Chicago taking both sets 4-1. Game 4 is set for Sunday also in Philadelphia. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’
