ATLANTA — Aaron Harang realizes his struggles in 2013 were a sign to some that he no longer could be a winning pitcher. Through eight starts in 2014, Harang is proving hes still on top of his game. Two days after his 36th birthday, Harang pitched six strong innings and, backed by home runs from Evan Gattis and Jason Heyward, led the Atlanta Braves to a 5-2 win and a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Harang (4-3) gave up two runs on six hits and two walks. He had nine strikeouts. He is one win shy of matching his total in 26 starts combined with Seattle and the Mets last year, and hes savoring his career revival. “It means a lot, just to get back out here and prove that I can still do this,” Harang said. “I know there were probably a lot of people questioning that after last year. Ive been pitching well and guys are playing well behind me and were battling through games. Its been a lot of fun. Ive just got to keep it going.” Harang, who was 5-12 with a career-worst 5.40 ERA last year, has a 2.98 ERA this season. The right-hander has allowed more than two earned runs in only one of his eight starts — nine runs in a 9-3 loss at Miami on April 30. Ryan Kalish, Chris Coghlan and Welington Castillo each struck out twice against Harang. Overall, the Cubs finished with 14 strikeouts. “They have a young, aggressive team over there and I think I was able to take a little advantage of that, knowing how aggressive they are,” Harang said. Gattis gave Atlanta a 3-2 lead with his homer off Edwin Jackson in the fourth inning. Heyward added to the lead with his first home run since April 9, a two-run drive off James Russell in the seventh that landed in the Braves bullpen beyond the right-field wall. “It felt like it was longer than that,” Heyward said of his power drought. “I keep on showing up every day and trying to put up good at-bats and find good pitches to hit. If you try and do too much, thats when you start to compound things.” Jackson (2-3) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks in six innings. “The two balls I got hurt on were balls up and over the middle,” he said. “Balls that should be hit. Ive just got to do a better job of getting ahead in the count and working down.” David Carpenter pitched the ninth for his second save. B.J. Upton made a sliding catch of Kalishs short fly in centre field to end it. Atlanta closer Craig Kimbrel was rested after pitching two straight days. The NL East-leading Braves have recovered from seven straight losses by winning four of five. The Cubs, last in the NL Central, have dropped seven of eight. Ryan Doumit had a run-scoring single and Andrelton Simmons drove in a run with a double to give Atlanta a 2-0 lead in the second. The Cubs tied it in the fourth on Nate Schierholtzs two-run double. The Braves quickly reclaimed the lead when Gattis hit his eighth homer over the 380-foot sign in left field. Dan Uggla was hit by a pitch from Russell as a pinch-hitter to lead off the seventh. Uggla scored on Heywards third homer. NOTES: Jackson, who grew up in Georgia and lives in Atlanta, is 0-3 in eight career games, including six starts, against the Braves. … Braves LF Justin Upton was held out after he sustained a bruised lower back muscle when he was hit by a pitch from Jeff Samardzija on Saturday night. Justin Upton said he hopes to play Monday in San Francisco. … Atlanta 2B Tyler Pastornicky made his second consecutive start and was 0 for 4. … The Braves begin a six-game road trip at the Giants with RHP Gavin Floyd facing RHP Tim Lincecum on Monday night. Park closed with a 6-under 67 for a five-shot victory over Suzann Pettersen in a Ladies European Tour event. SAN ANTONIO — Spurs coach Gregg Popovich admitted he is getting antsy for a loss. Hell have to wait. Marco Belinelli scored 18 points and San Antonio never trailed after its opening possession, extending its winning streak to 17 games with a 96-80 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday night. The Spurs once again used fluid passing and tireless player movement to overwhelm an opponent. San Antonio finished with 24 assists while going 37 for 78 from the field in snapping New Orleans five-game winning streak. “They move around a lot, and run their sets hard,” Pelicans guard Brian Roberts said. “Whatever theyre running, they are moving constantly. It puts pressure on a defence to play 24 seconds worth.” Roberts scored 18 points, Austin Rivers added 16 points, Tyreke Evans had 11 points and Al-Farouq Aminu had eight points and 10 rebounds for New Orleans (32-41). Kawhi Leonard and Manu Ginobili scored 15 points each, Patty Mills added 13 and Tim Duncan had 12 points and eight rebounds. San Antonio (57-16) extended its lead to 3 1/2 games over Oklahoma City (53-19) for the leagues best record. In addition to winning its last 17, the Spurs have won 20 of 21 and have not lost since falling 106-85 to the Phoenix Suns on Feb. 21. “It is sweet to be a part of that,” Ginobili said. “It is not something that happens very often because it is a long spread of game, a month or two. Here or there you have a bad game or the opponent has a bad one, but a lot of things have combined for us to have this type of streak. We played really well and we are healthy.” New Orleans was without Anthony Davis, its leading scorer and rebounder. Davis injured his left ankle 4 minutes into the Pelicans victory over Utah on Friday night. “Its a joint/soft tissue injury right now,” New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. “He did it in his normal routine. Hes listed as day to day. Well see how he feels tomorrow.” Williams said the Pelicans would have had a tough task even with Davis and the Spurs showed why early. “They jumped oon us,” Evans said.dddddddddddd “They just moved the ball hit shots and we couldnt make a shot.” San Antonio opened the game on a 23-6 run, with Belinelli picked up where he left off Friday night. He was 4 for 5 on 3-pointers against New Orleans after going 6 for 9 on 3-pointers Friday while scoring a game-high 27 points in a 133-102 victory in Denver. “Hes been really steady for us and he plays a great all-around game,” Popovich said. Belinelli made his first two 3-pointers against the Pelicans after opening with a 15-foot jumper off an assist from Duncan. Belinellis first 3-pointer with 6 minutes remaining in the first quarter gave San Antonio a 16-4 lead. The Spurs would never lead by less than 10 points the rest of the way. After Alexis Ajinca hit a 17-foot jumper on the games opening possession, New Orleans did not score again until Greg Stiemsmas dunk with 8:21 remaining in the first quarter. The three-minute drought was followed by another three-minute drought. “We couldnt finish in the paint tonight,” Williams said. “We were 18 for 48 in the paint. Thats a bad number for us. Were a team that usually is high when it comes to points in the paint.” Rivers layup with 30.9 seconds pulled New Orleans within 69-59 with 30.9 seconds left in the third quarter, but Belinelli hit back-to-back 3s to fuel a 12-3 run and San Antonio reasserted its control. San Antonio travels to Indiana to play the Eastern Conference-leading Pacers on Monday. NOTES: Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson sat courtside during the game cheering the Spurs. Mickelson withdrew Saturday from the third round of the Valero Texas Open after injuring an oblique muscle. “I pulled a muscle on my downswing trying to hit the ball hard on the second hole (his 11th),” Mickelson said in a statement. “It just killed and it wouldnt subside for 10 or 12 seconds.” … Spurs W Danny Green (right foot inflammation) and Matt Bonner (right calf strain) both sat out the game. … Roberts played 29 minutes after being listed as day to day with a left knee bone bruise. SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The Swiss were as surprised as anyone else by their gold-medal victory at the 2014 Ford Womens World Curling Championship. Binia Feltschers inexperienced Flims Curling Club foursome upset Canadas Rachel Homan 9-5 in Sundays final at Harbour Station. “Im speechless. Its like dream. Its awesome,” Swiss third Irene Schori said. "We were very relaxed. We had nothing to lose and they were under pressure. “We are surprised. We did a great job the whole season, but we never thought we could win a medal at the world championship.” Its Switzerlands second womens world title in three years after Mirjam Ott won it in Lethbridge, Alta., in 2012. Feltscher won an Olympic silver medal in 2006 playing third for Ott, but Schori, second Franziska Kaufmann and lead Christine Urech made their world championship debuts in Saint John. It was a deflating end for Canadas Homan, third Emma Miskew, second Alison Kreviazuk and lead Lisa Weagle out of the Ottawa Curling Club. The host country boasted an 11-1 tournament record going into Sundays final, but a devastating eighth end cost Canada. Leading 5-3 after seven, the Swiss scored three points on Canadian mistakes and Homan couldnt recover. More errors in the ninth forced Homan into a low percentage angle raise double takeout with her final throw. The Canadian skip missed and gave up a steal of three for the first time in the tournament. Down four points coming home, even a team as potent with the hammer as Homans had been couldnt generate four points. “Im disappointed we didnt finish off that last game,” a stoic Homan said. "We had a really good week. “The whole game we just werent quite making the shots we needed to make.” Homan went undefeated to win a second Canadian championship and earn a return trip to the world championship. The skip missed her last shot of the semifinal in Riga, Latvia, last year to give up the steal of a point and the win to eventual champion Eve Muirhead of Scotland. The Canadians settled for bronze in Riga and came to Saint John bent on moving two steps up the podium, not one. Muirhead opted to focus on the Winter Olympics in Sochi instead of participating in playdowns for this world championship. Canadas lone loss of the preliminary round was to Switzerland on Day 2. With runbacks and raises, Homan drained the Swiss of their offence in Fridays playoff game between the tournaments top two seeds. The Swiss felt no weight of expectations and Canada did. “A silver medal is still an improvement from the bronze last year,” Kreviazuk said. "We worked so hard this year. It feels good to come out of this with at least a medal. “Tomorrow were going to look at the silver and be a lot happier. Right now, its a little tough to swallow. Im still proud and happy. I know I will be tomorrow.” Winnipegs Jennifer Jones went undefeated in Sochi to claim Olympic womens curling gold last month, but Canada hasnt won a world womens title since Jones in 2008 in Vernon, B.C. Homan and Miskew led in shooting percentages at their position prior to the final, but shot 61 and 63 per cent, respectively Sunday. “They just made more mistakes than they usually make,” Feltscher said through an interpreter. In the eighth end, Kreviazuk needed to put her draw on the top of the four-foot rings, but her stone stayed top 12. Miskews draw was heavy and Homan missed a freeze with her first shot of the end. She threw big weight to chip off one of her own stones to the button and missed, leaving Feltscher with a draw for three. “I thought I stuck it for shot and it just kept spinning,” Homan said. The future of Homans team in Canadian curling remains bright if they continue on together as a team. Weagle, who turns 29 on Monday, is getting married in July. Her teammates are all 25 or under and in the early stages of their careers after earning their university degrees. The South Koreans, Chinese and Russians are full-time, paid athletes. The federations focus on a chosen few because those countries dont have Canadas depth. Canada determines its international representatives via the natural selection of regional, provincial and national playdowns. Qualifying for Canadas 2017 trials requires travelling to World Curling Tour events across Canada throughout the winter to earn ranking points. Thats a difficult commitment when juggling careers and families. “Its not a discussion weve had, but I cant see the girls backing down anytime soon,” Kreviazuk said. “Youll probably see a lot of us.” Kelly Scott, winner of the womens world title in 2007, recently announced her team is disbanding. “At this point, all the ladies are assessing where curling fits into their busy lives; complete with careers and young families,” Scott said in a statement. Jones, 39, has a young daughter. It is unclear at this point if she wants to commit to another Olympic quadrennial. Earle Morris, who had a cult following at Harbour Station, has coached Homan for the better part of the last decade. He wasnt certain he would be coaching them next season because he too may take a break. “I think they will have a great future,” Morris said. "The problem with curling and stereotypically with women is life gets in the way. We just have to hope thats not going to happen with this team. It would be hard to replace anybody on this team in their position. “Your motivation, suddenly its not the most important thing in the world when you have a little baby to worry about or a family to raise or work commitments. It is a challenge for women more so than men in that regard.” Anna Sidorova claimed the first womens world curling championship medal for Russia by scoring two in the 10th and stealing one in an extra end in a 7-6 win over South Koreas Ji-sun Kim. “I just dont have enough words to describe my feelings,” said Sidorova, who went 3-6 in Sochi. “Now Im pretty sure we are able to play at a really high level and were able to beat everybody. We just need to execute well and believe in ourselves sometimes.” Albertas Kevin Koe won the Tim Hortons Brier and will represent Canada at the mens world championship Saturday to April 6 in Beijing. The 2015 Scotties Tournament of Hearts will be held in Moose Jaw, Sask., and Sapporo, Japan will be the host of next years womens world championship. Saint John drew approximately 44,000 people to Harbour Station for the nine-day event. The last world curling championship at Harbour Station in 1999 drew 96,000 when it combined both mens and womens events. Since they were split into two separate events in 2005, Grande Prairie, Alta., holds the attendance record for the womens event at 60,000 the following year. The Raiders said Monday that kickoff for Sundays game will be at 8:35 p.m. PDT instead of the originally scheduled 1:25 p.m. game time. The reason for the switch is the Oakland Athletics are pplaying Game 2 of their division series on Saturday night and it takes too long to convert the Coliseum from baseball to football to play an afternoon game.dddddddddddd The Raiders are the only NFL team that still plays in a stadium shared by a Major League Baseball team. The game will be televised by NFL Network instead of CBS. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

PORTLAND, OREGON – Uruguayan midfielder Sebastian Fernandez scored his first goal of the preseason as Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Portland Timbers played to a hard-fought 1-1 draw Saturday at Providence Park. After the host Timbers opened the scoring in the third minute, Fernandez smashed home a late second-half penalty to salvage Whitecaps FCs undefeated record at the Rose City Invitational. The Caps finish the tournament as the top team with a 2W-0L-1D record and enter next weekends season opener undefeated in four preseason matches. Vancouvers squad on Saturday looked similar to the one that defeated Portmore United 5-1 last weekend, though there were a few changes. Right back Ethen Sampson and striker Kenny Miller came in to replace Steven Beitashour and Darren Mattocks, who are both away on international duty. Midfielder Gershon Koffie also drew into the starting lineup, which moved Russell Teibert up to the right wing. And goalkeeper David Ousted made his first appearance of the tournament. Saturdays contest got off to a physical start at Providence Park, which is often the norm in meetings between these Cascadia rivals. In fact, there were a total of 16 fouls committed in the first half alone. Unfortunately for the Blue and White, however, an early foul led to Portlands first goal of the match – a Will Johnson free kick from 25 yards in the third minute. The Caps nearly equalized a few minutes later when Fernandez let loose a curling strike from distance, but Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts tipped it just over the goal. Aside from the early marker, there wasnt much between Vancouver and Portland in the opening 45 minutes. The host Timbers came on in spurts, but the Caps back line anchored by Jay DeMerit and Andy OBrien kept them at bay. For Whitecaps FC, Uruguayan midfielder Nicolas Mezquida looked particularly dangerous. The 22-year-old showed great vision on a throughball to Miller in the 18th minute and some nifty footwork in midfield a few minutes later. The Caps couldnt connect in the final third, however, and it just about cost them . Portland had a great chance to double their lead in the 35th minute, as Maximilano Urruti slipped behind the Caps defence only to float his ensuing effort over the crossbar. They came close again just after the break, when Darlington Nagbe found some space in the middle of the park before letting loose a heavy strike from 20 yards that went just wide. At the other end of the park, Whitecaps FC showed some attacking flair again in the second half. And they received a boost just after the hour-mark, when local lad Erik Hurtado and Argentine midfielder came Matias Laba into the match – followed shortly by winger/striker Kekuta Manneh. And the trio combined to set up Vancouvers equalizer in the 79th minute. After a receiving a pass from Laba in midfield, Hurtado took a touch and released Manneh into the box before the Gambian was hauled down by Timbers defender Jack Jewsbury. Then Fernandez smashed home the ensuing penalty kick to level the score at 1-1. Manneh had a pair of half-chances in the dying stages of the match, but in the end the Cascadia rivals battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw – just as they did in each of their three regular season meetings in 2013. With the draw, Whitecaps FC conclude the preseason with 4W-2L-1D record. nfl jerseys china . ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Rays held a moment of silence for Don Zimmer before Thursdays game against Miami. The Rays will also have a ceremony for their team senior adviser before Saturdays game with Seattle. Zimmer spent 66 years in pro baseball and died Wednesday at 83. He had been in a Florida rehab centre since heart surgery in mid-April. Tom Zimmer, Dons son and a San Francisco Giants scout, issued a family statement thanking all of those who “rooted so hard” for “Pops recovery.” “What a great life he has had,” the statement said. “The game goes on without him now, but he surely would have expressed once again that I was so lucky to be part of this game for a lifetime.” Tom Zimmer called his fathers final few years a “huge struggle.” “In baseball terms he battled the best he could but simply was running out of gas,” he said. “These last eight weeks, he was just too weakened to survive anymore and we are grateful the suffering has ended. We will miss him terribly, but will have a lifetime of memories.” There is no funeral or other memorial service planned. In lieu of flowers, the family asked donations be made to either the National Kidney Foundation or the Baseball Assistance team. . Play hard, play tough and play rough. The philosophy has been a lesson in frustration for opponents. HARRISON, N.J. — If Chivas USA continues the play the way it has under new coach Wilmer Cabrera, its now-17-game winless streak on the road is going to end soon. Chivas USA came within seconds of its first road win in more than a year, only to see Peguy Luyindula of the Red Bulls nudge a corner kick into the net as four minutes of stoppage time was about to expire Sunday, allowing winless New York to salvage a 1-1 tie. “Of course we are disappointed,” goaltender Dan Kennedy said after Chivas USAs road drought increased to 0-13-4. “We are disappointed giving up a goal in the last minute of the game, the last seconds really. I dont know how much time was added on, but it seemed deep into the game.” Kennedy said no one is thinking about the skid because its basically a new team with a different coach and new ownership. The past is irrelevant, he said. The Red Bulls (0-3-1) had some luck on the game-tying goal against Chivas USA (1-1-2). Eric Alexander, a second-half substitute, floated a corner kick from the left side into the box and Luyindula went up and knocked it into the net past a stunned Kennedy for his first of the season. “It wasnt clean,” said Kennedy, who didnt think the shot came off Luyindulas head. “It kind of fluttered in. In the end we came in here against the Supports Shield winner and got a point and made it really, really tough on them.” Neither Luyindula, nor Alexander nor Red Bulls captain Thierry Henry spoke to the media after the game. “We feel relieved, but we still havent gotten our three points, so were not entirely happy,” Red Bulls midfielder Lloyd Sam said. “Youre happy not to lose the game, but we need to get our first win.dddddddddddd. Weve had two home games and the second half we were all over them. We should have had a couple of more goals.” Erick Torres first-half penalty kick and Kennedys outstanding play kept Chivas USA ahead from the 25th minute on. Kennedy was under constant pressure in the second half. He made a kick save on a breakaway by Bradley Wright-Phillips in the 73rd minute, nudged a dipping Dax McCarty shot over the bar and stopped a header by Henry in the final 10 minutes. A couple of other shots went just wide of the net. He finished with four saves. Chivas USA has not won away from its Carson, Calif., home since a 4-1 decision over Chicago on March 24, 2013. The Red Bulls start is still better than last season. They opened 0-2-2 before turning things around and posting the best regular-season record in the league. Torres, who has four goals in as many games, scored in the 25th minute after defender Richard Eckersley shoved Thomas McNamara in the back as he went to head a cross into the box. The penalty seemed foolish because the ball was clearly too high for McNamara to head. Torres penalty kick went into the middle of the net as Red Bulls goaltender Luis Robles dove to defend his left side of the net. “Im sad because we made a really strong effort and then to get a goal in the 94th minute obviously you leave the game very frustrated, very angry, very upset,” Torres said through a team translator. Chivas USA did not have a shot on goal other than the penalty kick. The Red Bulls saw Australian forward Tim Cahill leave the game in the first half with a pulled right hamstring. Before he left, Kennedy stopped Cahill on a header off a free kick by Henry. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

PITTSBURGH — Olli Maatta is sticking with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The team announced Thursday the 19-year-old defenceman will remain with the club indefinitely rather than return to his junior team, the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. The Penguins could have sent Maatta back down and pushed back his rookie status until next year. Instead, Maatta remain in Pittsburgh and enter the first year of his entry-level contract. If he stays more than 40 games, he can become a free agent by age 25. Its heady territory for a kid who in high school a year ago. “Its gone good so far so why change anything?” Maatta said. Maatta, who is from Finland, has one goal and two assists while averaging around 15 minutes of ice time a game for the Penguins. The 22nd overall pick in the 2012 NHL entry draft has wowed coach Dan Bylsma with his skating and impressed teammates with his ability to adapt quickly to the sports highest level. “I think hes played nine games in a row because hes earned the right to play nine games in a row because hes given us the best chance to win hockey games and thats going to happen in the 10th game too,” Bylsma said. The odds seemed long during training camp, when Maattas NHL debut figured to be at least a year away. He made a compelling case for himself during the preseason and was a surprise addition when he survived the final cuts. “I feel like I worked hard for this and they feel like I still need to work hard and get better,” he said. “But I feel better about staying here.” Maatta isnt a potent offensive player but hasnt hesitated when given the opportunity. His first NHL goal came in a 4-3 shootout win over Vancouver last Saturday when he poked in a rebound with 6:48 remaining in regulation to tie the game. Though Maatta insists the goal wasnt his “welcome to the NHL moment” theres little doubt it gave him a boost thats helped him believe he belonged. “Every game Ive got more confident out there,” he said. “Every game I get more confident that I can play at this level.” NOTES: The Penguins recalled F Jayson Megna from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL and placed F Beau Bennett on injured reserve retroactive to Oct. 12 … D Kris Letang, who has not played this season due to a lower body injury, practiced on Thursday and Bylsma said it is “likely” Letang will make be in the lineup on Friday when the Penguins host the New York Islanders. Friday, they found a solution to the problem. Detroit dominated Brooklyn for two-and-a-half quarters, building a 29-point lead, then held on for dear life as the Nets cut the lead to single digits in the waning moments. Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks said after the game that he thinks his team has developed a mental block when it comes to holding leads down the stretch. “You can get one of those,” he said. “Fortunately, we had a huge lead tonight, but that is still something we really need to work on. I think we need to win a couple games in the fourth quarter and find some confidence.” Brooklyn trailed 96-63 heading into the fourth, but Detroits offence stalled yet again. Jason Kidd didnt play his starters at all in the final period, but Jason Terry hit a pair of 3-pointers and Mason Plumlee got open for three dunks to get the Nets within 102-92 with 1:57 to go. “We could not get a rebound or a stop, so I was trying to find guys who can play,” Kidd said. “The guys who were out there playing continued to execute and we finally got some stops.” Rodney Stuckey hit a 17-foot baseline jumper on Detroits next possession, then hit a pair of free throws to stave off a complete collapse. “We were bleeding at that point, so we really needed those points,” Cheeks said. “We stopped pushing the ball in the fourth, and they started making shots, so that made it even harder to run.” Brandon Jennings made a run at a rare quadruple double, and could have had a regular triple-double if he had managed a single second-half assist. He finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and eight turnovers. Andre Drummond added 16 points and 22 rebounds, even hitting two free throws with 36.5 seconds to go after missing his first six attempts. Josh Smith had with 23 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four blocks before leaving the game with 4:39 to play. Cheeks said Smith twisted his ankle, but the team wasnt sure of the severity. The Nets were resting Kevin Garnett, and the starting lineup struggled badly, combining for just 442 points.dddddddddddd Terry led the team with 18, all in the second half, while Plumlee also got his 10 points after halftime. Joe Johnson added 16 as the one bright spot among Brooklyns starters. “We knew what we had to do against them — rebound and get back in transition defence,” Nets point guard Deron Williams said. “We just werent ready to play tonight. Our energy wasnt there, our effort wasnt there and they seemed to have another gear than we did.” With Garnett on the bench, the Nets had no answer for Detroit inside. When the Pistons werent feeding Drummond, Smith and Greg Monroe in the post, Stuckey and Jennings were driving to the basket with ease. Brooklyns struggles peaked early in the second quarter when Smith was swooping in for a fast-break dunk and Mirza Teletovic swiped at the ball, but caught Smith in the face. Teletovic was given a flagrant foul, giving Smith two chances to make one free throw to complete the three-point play. He made it on the second try and Detroit kept the ball because of the flagrant foul. Chauncey Billups, playing for the first time since Jan. 10, sent a behind-the-back pass to set up Drummond for an easy dunk and a five-point possession. That put the Pistons up by 20, and they were ahead 67-44 at the intermission. The Nets, who were outshot 62 per cent to 31 per cent in the half, didnt get much better in the third quarter, with a series of turnovers leading to Detroit fast breaks. At that point, the Pistons seemed in complete control, but that just isnt the way they play. “Once a team cuts it to 20, that should get your attention,” Billups said. “Thats when you should kick back into a more focused gear.” NOTES: The Pistons announced before the game that reserve forward Josh Harrellson will be sidelined until after the All-Star break with a slight tear of his left meniscus. … Kidd was the last NBA player to reach double figures in points, assists, rebounds and turnovers in the same game, doing it for Phoenix in 2000. … Will Bynum did not play after getting into an argument with Cheeks during Detroits last game. Cheeks said he simply wanted to get Billups back into the rotation. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

TSN.ca presents its latest weekly power rankings for the 2013-14 Barclays Premier League season. Rankings were weighted evenly between separate lists made by TSN Radio host and soccer analyst Gareth Wheeler as well as TSN.cas soccer editors. 1. Chelsea (Last Week-2) Chelsea became the first Premier League team to win at Etihad Stadium when they knocked off Manchester City 1-0. Branislav Ivanovic provided the winner maker as Chelsea completed the double over their title contending rivals. 2. Manchester City (LW-1) For the first time this season, Manchester City were beaten at home, 1-0 by Chelsea. Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko started up front, but they were locked down and frustrated by a tight Chelsea backline all game. 3. Arsenal (LW-3) A pair of goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain helped Arsenal climb back to the summit of the Barclays Premier League after a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace. Wojciech Szczesny was only forced to make two saves on his way to the clean sheet. 4. Liverpool (LW-4) A horrible error by Kolo Toure doomed Liverpool to a 1-1 draw with West Brom. Daniel Sturridge gave his side a first half lead but Toure gifted the home side a second half equalizer, that proved to be the last goal scored in the game. 5. Everton (LW-7) After falling behind at Goodison Park, Steven Naismith and Kevin Mirallas fired Everton to a 2-1 home victory over Aston Villa. The victory keeps Everton in one of the Barclays Premier Leagues European places. 6. Tottenham (LW-6) Paulinhos 61st minute marker salvaged a point for Spurs as they drew 1-1 with Hull City. This was the first time Tottenham did not earn a win on the road under new manager Tim Sherwood. 7. Manchester United (LW-5) Robin van Persie scored Uniteds only goal as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Stoke City. The setback leaves the champions seven points out of the top-four and a place in next years Champions League. 8. Southampton (LW-9) Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez were all on target in the second half as Southampton cruised to a 3-0 victory over Fulham. Artur Boruc was solid when called upon to earn the clean sheet. 9. Newcastle United (LW-8) It was a tough contest for Newcastle as they were well beaten 3-0 at the hands of Sunderland. Newcastle has just one win in their last six league contests. 10. Sunderland (LW-16) Fabio Borini, Adam Johnson and Jack Colback were all on target, the first from the penalty spot, as Sunderland dropped Newcastle 3-0. 11. Aston Villa (LW-11) Leandro Bacunas first half marker was all Aston Villa could muster as they fell 2-1 to Everton. 12. West Bromwich Albion (LW-14) Victor Anichebe benefited from a Kolo Toure error to earn West Brom a 1-1 draw against Liverpool. Toure played the ball across his defence right into the path of Anichebe, who easily put home the equalizing marker. 13. Stoke City (LW-17) Charlie Adam scored on either side of halftime to lead Stoke to a 2-1 victory over Manchester United. His second marker came just five minutes after the champions had leveled the score. This was Stokes first Premier League victory over United. 14. Hull City (LW-15) After being held goalless and pointless through the month of January, Shane Long broke them out of their funk helping them earn a 1-1 draw against Tottenham. 15. Swansea City (LW-11) In what turned out to be Michael Laudrups final match at the helm of Swansea, they were defeated 2-0 by West Ham. On Tuesday, Laudrup was fired by the Welsh team almost a year after leading them to the 2013 League Cup, their first major trophy. 16. Norwich City (LW-12) Robert Snodgrass gave Norwich the lead after just five minutes but they were not able to hang on as they fell 2-1 to Cardiff City. 17. West Ham United (LW-18) An eventful contest saw West Ham earn a 2-0 victory over Swansea at Upton Park. A first half brace from Kevin Nolan provided the difference in the contest. In the second half Andy Carroll, who set up both goals, was sent off for an altercation with Chico Flores in the 59th minute. 18. Cardiff City (LW-19) After conceding the opening goal five minutes into the match, Kenwyne Jones and Craig Bellamy turned the game within a minute to earn Cardiff a 2-1 victory over Norwich City. The victory was Ole Gunnar Solskjaers first in charge of the Welsh side. 19. Crystal Palace (LW-13) Crystal Palace surrendered two goals in the second half as they fell 2-0 to Arsenal. Palace had trouble finding their rhythm in this contest. 20. Fulham (LW-20) A disastrous second half doomed Fulham to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton. Darren Bent was turned away twice with chances to get his side on the board. Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, Guessing youre going to get a load of emails about Cookes kneeing penalty on Barrie. I know the rules specify that it is due to the severity of the knee rather than the injury that it causes. That being said, I was surprised that the hit on Barrie was not a major, was that a case of Barrie getting up and skating to the bench? Had he stayed on the ice, do you think the referee would have increased the penalty to a five minute major? Im also interested to learn whether Cooke will be counted as a repeat offender, I keep hearing that after 18 months of no suspensions or fines, that the history becomes irrelevant in handing out suspensions. If this is true, than the last time Cooke was suspended was 2011 (TSNs player profiles dont specify fines so I dont know if he was fined in between then and today). Would you consider Cooke a repeat offender despite his 3 year clean record? GarethPrince Rupert, BC - Hey Kerry, I am a big fan of reading your blog. I always email you in hopes you will answer my inquiries. Matt Cooke has developed a reputation throughout the league as a very dirty player, yet when he kneed Tyson Barrie he was only assessed a minor. I applaud Barrie for being able to get off the ice on his own, but I cannot help but yell at the television whenever they showed Cookes face. I am sure during your time as an official you have seen dirty plays committed by players who have been known to play dirty. Based on your experiences, do you agree with how the officials handled this play? And for the $64,000 question, would you suspend Cooke and for how long? Best Regards,Zach Budnick, New York, NY -- I dont know what game you had the pleasure to take in last night Kerry but this game needed more calls on the obvious infractions. There was the knee on knee from Matt Cooke which got nothing called. After that they had so many obvious interference cheap hits and cross checks from both clubs either behind the play or long after the puck was gone. This game reminded me of exactly what you said you DIDNT want to see from the referees, letting the game get out of their control by missing the easy calls and giving players far too much leniency. My question comes back to Matt Cooke and how the play looked versus the rule book. Should the league suspended him if we look at it by the book? Thanks for all your columns from the only neutral party on the ice. BretWindsor, ON Garreth, Zach (congrats on Q being chosen), and Bret: The language of Rule 50 (kneeing) provides for a minor, major penalty (plus automatic game misconduct) or match penalty to be assessed at the discretion of the referee based on the “severity of the infraction.” In judging “severity” of this highly dangerous and dirty act, the referee must take into account the time, space and distance between the two players prior to contact, in addition to the angle of attack by the player guilty of leading with his knee to make contact with his opponent. Most often a two minute minor penalty can result when a player is about to miss an intended check and makes his body posture bigger with a reflex extension of the knee to initiate contact. This is execcuted with players in close proximity to one another.dddddddddddd. The extended distance that Matt Cooke travelled through the neutral zone on a straight attack path toward Tyson Barrie, coupled with the fact that Cooke extended his knee well in advance of the impending contact (left skate off the ice through approach), elevates this infraction to a major and game misconduct or even a match penalty (I assessed a match penalty to Bryan Marchment in a game in San Jose for a very similar play when Mush approached his opponent with knee extended outwards a good 8-10 feet prior to delivering a knee hit). Only a minor penalty was assessed on this play. The infraction took place just inside the Colorado blue line. The referee that made the call came into camera frame with his arm raised from the neutral zone outside the blue line on the opposite side of the ice to where the infraction occurred. He was supposed to be the trailing referee on the play and it would appear that he vacated the end zone prematurely. As such, his sight line would have at best been parallel to the play. From this deficient vantage, the referee was provided a completely different perspective of Matt Cookes knee extension and contact. Following the game last night, the National Hockey League Player Safety Committee announced that Matt Cooke was offered the opportunity for an in-person hearing as required by provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for any suspension that can exceed five games. With a Wednesday hearing, it is not a question if Cooke will be suspended but only for how many games. You ask if Matt Cooke can or will be treated as a repeat offender. While Cooke deserves much credit for effecting positive change in his method of play over the past three seasons prior to this incident, the fact remains that a players past history will follow him throughout the balance of his NHL playing career. My colleague and friend Bob McKenzie shared the following information with me that should address your questions. A players record is expunged if he goes 18 months without an infraction but that only applies to the formula for calculating lost wages. If a player has a fine or suspension in last 18 months, hes a repeat offender and the lost wages formula is based on number of games suspended (5/82 for a five game suspension) as opposed to number of days (5/182 for a five game suspension in a 182-day regular season). But a players “history” stays with him as a permanent record and the NHL can take into account any or all past transgressions when determining length of a suspension. History doesnt allow the NHL to suspend a player who, if not for his history, wouldnt be suspended. But once an illegal play has taken place, the NHL can use Matt Cookes history as part of his sentencing even if his transgressions were years ago. In the playoffs there are no lost wages; therefore the actual repeat offender status doesnt come into play for a player suspended in the playoffs unless the suspension carries over to the regular season. By virtue of the in-person hearing being extended, it would appear that Matt Cookes history coupled with the seriousness of this incident could be taken into account for the purpose of suspension. At the very least, the Player Safety Committee is not taking the option to impose a five-plus game suspension off the table. LOS ANGELES — Three days after Kobe Bryant broke his nose and got a concussion in the All-Star game, he strapped on a mask and went back to work. Bryant received clearance to play for the Lakers on Wednesday night, not missing a game after a nasty injury resulting from a hard foul from Dwyane Wade. Bryant was declared symptom-free by his neurologist about an hour before the Lakers hosted the Minnesota Timberwolves in their first game back from the All-Star break. In his only concession to two serious injuries, Bryant wore a clear protective mask over his nose. Dr. Vern Williams said Bryant improved markedly after an exam Tuesday, meeting all the clinical guidelines for returning to action. “Well watch him very carefully, and well see how he does,” Williams said. Bryant started out well, hitting a 12-footer and a 21-footer on his first two shots against Minnesota. Bryant had headaches and nausea shortly after getting hurt Sunday in his 14th All-Star game, in which Bryant became the leading scorer in All-Star history. His concussion was diagnosed Tuesday, and Bryant complained of neck soreness Williams likened to whiplash. None of it could sideline Bryant, who leads the NBA in scoring with 28.4 points per game. He is the fifth-leading scorer in NBA history with 28,834 points. “Kobe is Kobe,” Lakers coach Mike Brown said. “I dont think he ever wants to sit out. If he had two broken legs, (he would say), Tape this one, and staple this one, and lets go.” Bryant was tested on a stationary bike, a treadmill and the court earlier Wednesday, participating in a 2-on-2 game at the Lakers training complex under supervision. Brown said Bryant looked normal, and Williams administered a final exam at Staples Center before the game. Bryant tried out a protective mask fashioned by the Lakers training staff before the game. He decided to play in the getup, which didnt look exactly like the gear long worn by NBA veteran Richard Hamilton. The Lakers opened a three-game homestand against Minnesota. Wade and the Miami Heat will visit Staples Center on Sunday. . PHILADELPHIA — Juan Pierre cant torment the Philadelphia Phillies any longer. The outfielder agreed to a minor league contract with the Phillies on Friday, getting an invitation to spring training with a club hes been a nemesis to for years. The 34-year-old hit .279 with two homers, 50 RBIs and 27 steals for the Chicago White Sox last season, starting 152 games in left field. The left-handed batter hit .329 against lefties. Pierre is the latest veteran to join Philadelphia, which has won five straight NL East titles. The Phillies have overhauled their bench, adding Jim Thome, Ty Wigginton and Laynce Nix. Scott Podsednik, a former all-star, also will be in camp as a non-roster player. All-stars Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence are Philadelphias starters in centre and right field, respectively. Raul Ibanez, who started in left field the last three years, is a free agent. John Mayberry Jr. is expected to get a majority of the playing tiime in left field, but Pierre could compete with Nix and Podsednik for a platoon role against right-handed pitchers.dddddddddddd Nix and Podsednik also bat left-handed. Pierre leads active players with 554 steals. He has a .296 career batting average with 234 doubles, 86 triples, 16 homers and 484 RBIs in 12 seasons for Colorado, Florida, the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and White Sox. Pierre has always been tough against the Phillies. He has a .310 average and .361 on-base percentage with 21 extra-base hits, 62 runs and 40 steals in 98 games against Philadelphia. In 2003, when Pierre played for the Marlins, the Phillies had a particularly difficult time keeping Pierre off base. He hit .397 with a .471 on-base percentage, scored 16 runs and stole 12 bases in 19 games against Philadelphia. The Phillies went 6-13 against the Marlins and finished five games behind them in the wild-card standings. Florida went on to beat the New York Yankees in the World Series. ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — Abbotsfords Sven Baertschi is feeling confident now that the points are starting to come. Baertschi extended his point streak to five games and scored the winner in a shootout as the Heat defeated the Texas Stars 3-2 in American Hockey League action Saturday night. The Bern, Switzerland native was assigned to the Heat by the Calgary Flames on Dec. 12 and had struggled to put up points, but since being matched with Corey Locke and Josh Jooris, things have changed. “Its nice to have points and everything but in the end you just want to play well,” said Baertschi. “There were nights before where I felt I was playing really, really well but the points werent there. In the end, if you get in that groove, you feel well and your game is going, then the points come automatic.” The Flames 2011 first round choice had just four points in his first 14 games with the AHL affiliate, but has a goal and four helpers during his current streak. “I think hes getting to that point in life . . . where its time to make hay,” said Heat head coach Troy Ward. “Theres some resiliency in his game, theres a little bit of swagger in his step, and theres a little bit of confidence. But I also think it comes to a point where every player down here in the American league has to have the ability to say, Thats enough. Its time for me to step forward.” With the shootout tied after six shooters apiece, Baertschi beat goalie Cristopher Nilstorp five-hole to give his team a 3-2 edge. “When I looked at the goalie, he has really long legs,” said Baertschi. “The move I try most of the time is to go between the legs and it worked out perfect, especially a goalie with big legs (because) they have to be very, very quick. I took advantage of that there.” Olivier Roy stopped Brett Ritchie to clinch the win. Roy made 36 saves through overtime for his third victory in five days. “He was huge for us tonight and has been great the last few games,” Baertschi said of his goalie. “Its awesome to see him come here, a new organization, and he was in the (ECHL). He gets a chance to come here and hes doing so well so were all proud of him and were glad hes playing so well.” Jooris and Derek Smith scored in regulation for Abbotsford (31-14-4), who has won five straight and is on a 6-0-2 run. Hubert Labrie and Brett Ritchie replied for Texas (28-15-6), and Nilstorp made 27 saves. The Heat crowded the front of their net and held the Stars offensive leaders to one assist combined. Travis Morin and Colton Sceviour have an AHL-high 27 goals apiece and Chris Mueller is sixth with 21. “They have some of the most skilled players in the league,” said Smith. “When you can get a chance to pressure them, take away time and space, we did that. You cant let guys like Travis Morin and the best players in the league make plays.” The Stars have dropped their last three contests and trail first-place Abbotsford by four points in the Western Conference standings. “Weve had a good stretch the last two weeks and passed them in the standings,” said Smith. “Now we want to make sure theyre looking up at us for the rest of the year.” Corban Knight was issued a penalty for a face-off violation with three seconds to go in regulation and the Stars carried that power play into overtime. Sceviour had the best chance to end it quickly but Roy stayed square to extend the extra frame. “Its an awful feeling, you dont want to be there,” said Baertschi of the overtime penalty kill. “But our guys did a great job and our goalie was outstanding there so in the end it was a huge team effort to make sure it went to a shootout.” The game marked a battle of the leagues top power-play units with Texas at 27.7 per cent efficiency with the man advantage. The Stars finished 0 for 5 and Abbotsford was 1 for 6. “Guys were getting into shot lanes and blocking shots and when Roy had to he came up big,” said Smith. “That save he made in overtime was obviously a game saver. But we did a good job clearing pucks too and when we got a chance to get it down we made sure it went the full 200.” Ritchie opened the scoring for the Stars at 10:22. After taking a feed from Jamie Oleksiak, Ritchie fired a wrist shot from the left face-off dot, beating Roy stick side for his 10th of the season. The Heat scored twice in 57 seconds to take the lead early in the second period. First, Ben Street won the draw back to Smith on a power play, and his shot beat Nilstorp top corner. Then Baertschi stole the puck at centre and fed Locke, who in turn found Jooris for a one-timer at 5:30. “Playing with Locke and Josh has been a lot of fun,” said Baertschi. “Locke made a great play today.” The Stars evened the game at 8:25. Kyrie Irving scored 22 points and the Cavaliers won their sixth straight game, 101-93 over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. MUNICH, Germany — Sergio Ramos has his redemption, Cristiano Ronaldo has his goal record and Real Madrid is one win away from the long-awaited “Decima.” Real Madrid carried out coach Carlo Ancelottis game plan to perfection and routed title holder Bayern Munich 4-0 on Tuesday to reach its first Champions League final in 12 years. Madrid will play either Chelsea or city rival Atletico Madrid in the May 24 final in Lisbon. Madrid, a 5-0 aggregate winner over Bayern, will be seeking a record 10th title — “La Decima” in Spanish. “We played a perfect game in the first half, we defended very well and pressed very high,” Ancelotti said. “We used the space we had for counters, with some great passing.” Madrid had never won in Munich in 10 previous matches, losing nine of them. But this time, Ancelottis team put its stamp on the game early and struck with awesome efficiency — something its Italian coach had promised ahead of the match. Madrids sweeping, fast counterattacks paced by Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Angel Di Maria, along with its tenacious tackling when Bayern tried to come out of the hosts own half, were a huge problem for Bayerns defence. However, the first two goals came from set pieces, as well as the last. Ramos, who missed the crucial penalty when Madrid lost to Bayern at the same stage in 2012 in a shootout, scored those first two goals and Ronaldo added two more to break the Champions League season record with a tally of 16. Ramos headed the first from a corner taken by Luka Modric in the 16th and nodded in the second four minutes later after a free kick from Angel Di Maria. “We prepared the set pieces and we used them to make things easy for us,” Ancelotti said. “We knew they defend with a zone, not man to man.” Ronaldo made it 3-0 to Madrid in the 34th minute after a perfectly executed counterattack and completed the victory with a free kick in the 89th as he shattered Barcelona star Lionel Messis record of 14 goals in a season. “Goals are great, satisfying on a personal level, but what matters is what we did as a team. The overall result was deserved,” Ramos said. &quoot; Its a dream come true.dddddddddddd Its a dream game, fantastic for all Madrid fans." After the final whistle, Madrid players put on T-shirts with the words Now for the 10th. It was a bitter defeat for Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, who had enjoyed so much success against Madrid when he was in charge of Barcelona. Bayern was seeking to become the first team to defend the Champions League title but instead slumped to its worst home defeat in the competition, and equaled its heaviest loss overall — 4-0 away to Barcelona in 2009. Guardiola bemoaned the lack of possession in the first half — although UEFA statistics show Bayern had two-thirds of possession for the game. “We didnt have ball possession and thats why we had no control,” Guardiola said. “Its a great disappointment. 0-4 sounds very bitter,” Bayern captain Philipp Lahm said. “We wanted a lot, but we failed tactically in the first half.” Madrid had lost three consecutive semifinals, including a 2012 shootout when Ramos missed a penalty. Of five previous semifinal series against Bayern, Madrid had won only one. Coming into the match, Madrid had only two wins in 27 outings in Germany, with six draws. But Ancelotti had won with AC Milan in Bavaria and believed he could do it again. “Id won here, so thats why I felt confident about our chances here,” the Italian said. “After 12 years to return to the Champions League final is very good for us.” Holding midfielder Xabi Alonso will miss Madrids 13th final because of accumulated yellow cards. There is a good omen for Madrid: every time it had defeated a title holder, it went on to win the title — in 1998, 2000 and 2002, the last two times getting through past Bayern, it the semifinals and quarterfinals, respectively. Madrid had won only two of its 27 previous matches in Germany, with six draws, but it has eliminated three German teams this season in succession — Schalke, last seasons runner-up Borussia Dortmund and now Bayern. Ancelotti won the competition twice as a player with AC Milan in 1989 and 1990 — under the European Cup format — and then twice as coach of Milan in 2003 and 2007. OAKLAND, Calif. — In three short years, Sean Doolittle transformed himself from a top first base prospect into a shut-down reliever. The Oakland Athletics are rewarding him for it, giving the left-hander a five-year contract Friday for making the improbable switch. The deal contains a pair of club options that could extend the agreement through the 2020 season. “It means everything that the organization thinks of you like that, that they want to keep you around and they think you can be part of teams here for years to come,” said Doolittle, a regular in the second deck at As games as a boy with his brother. “If you factor in the road I took to get here and everything I went through to be able to put on this uniform, its really special to know Ill be part of this organization for a while.” Oakland announced the contract ahead of a home weekend series against the Houston Astros. Doolittle took his physical Thursday and should sign the agreement as soon as Monday. His 2020 option becomes mutual if he has a combined 100 games finished between 2018 and 2019. The 27-year-old left-hander has been a reliable member of Oaklands talented bullpen since converting from first base late in the 2011 season. He appreciates his new job security — and still thinks about the path he took to get to this point. “Its crazy,” he said. “There are still plenty of times I cant believe I actually did that. The way things worked out, it just makes everything that much better. I dont take a single minute I have up here for granted.” He is 7-6 with a 3.10 ERA and four saves in 122 relief appearances, allowing 100 hits with 129 strikeouts in 125 innings. He is 0-0 with a 3.12 ERA and one save in eight appearances over 8 2-3 innings so far this year, his third big league season. “Hes a guy weve gotten to know on a personal level and we have a ton of faith in the person he is on the field and off the field,” said Farhan Zaidi, As assistant general manager and director of baseball operations. “Having to transition from being a position player to a pitcher, thats shown us a lot. Weve seen what everybody else has seen the last two years. Hes been one of the best relievers and setup men in baseball. I think every team would want to have that guy around for as long as possible. That was our motivation.” His previous deal was a one-year contract paying $505,000 in the major leagues this season and $295,500 in the minors. The sides reached a basic framework on the new deal before the end of spring training, but still had some language to work out. If Doolittle becomes “Super 2” eligible after this season as expected — meaning he is just shy of three years of service time - there are escalators in his new deal based on games finished. Doolittle certainly hopes his role evolves into becoming the regular closer one day. The As brass are thrilled with Doolittles reinvention of himself, though he no longer surprises anybody. “The durability that he has shown, he takes good care of himself, all of the things you look for in the guys you want to get a long-term deal with, he does,” manager Bob Melvin said. “With both sides happy about it, its a good deal for us, its a good deal for him. To have a guy like that around for a while is good news to everybody in our clubhouse.” . The Russian star retired Thursday just after he withdrew from the mens event at the Sochi Olympics for medical reasons. The 31-year-old Plushenko is the only modern-era figure skater to win medals in four Olympics. He helped Russia win the team gold over the weekend. “I think its God saying, Evgeni, enough, enough with skating,” said Plushenko, who originally was hurt in a training session Wednesday. “Age, its OK. But I have 12 surgeries. Id like to be healthy.” In warmups before the short program, he fell on a triple axel and said it felt “like a knife in my back.” He skated toward his coaches while bent over, then tried to loosen up by skating around the Iceberg rink some more. He then attempted another axel and botched it, shook his head and consulted with coach Alexei Mishin. When Plushenkos name was announced to the crowd seconds later — to loud applause — he skated to the event referee and withdrew. Before the latest injury, Plushenko said he planned to go out in style. “I said to myself, Evgeni, you must skate. Its two more days, short and long program,” the 2006 Olympic gold medallist saaid.dddddddddddd He also won Olympic silver in 2002 and 2010. Before leaving the ice, he held up both hands to the crowd as if to say he was sorry, and took a small bow. He was Russias only man in the competition, so the host country will have no finisher in the event. Plushenko finished second at the Russian national championships and didnt appear headed for Sochi at all. He was added to the Russian roster late last month after a trial run-through in front of federation officials convinced them he was the countrys best mens option. That decision paid off when he finished second in the team short program and first in the free skate, helping Russia to its first gold of the Sochi Games. In that final full practice Wednesday, he fell three times, but was laughing and joking with Mishin after two of the flops. Mishin even said Plushenko was “ready” for the mens event. That changed Thursday, and when Plushenko limped out of the arena, the cheers turned to mild applause from the stunned audience. “Some people say we had this plan from the very beginning, but we did not,” he said. “We were going to go to the end. If I really wished to withdraw after the tem event, I would have.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer gets the call in net as Canada opens up its World Championship group stage play on Friday against France. You can catch the action live on TSN at 9:30am et/6:30am pt. Coach Dave Tippett says he made the call of Reimer over Edmonton Oilers goalie Ben Scrivens, Reimers former teammate, strictly due to seniority. Its expected that both goalies will split time at the tournament in Belarus with Scrivens likely seeing action in Canadas next game on Saturday against Slovakia. Reimer last played for Canada at the 2011 World Championships in Slovakia, posting a 4-0 record in the group stage. Jonathan Bernier, now Reimers teammate with the Leafs, was preferred for Canadas quarterfinal game and dropped a 2-1 decision to Russia. This is Scrivenss first time representing Canada at any level. Meanwhile, Kevin Bieksa was named Team Canadas captain on Thursday. Coach Dave Tippett said Bieksa got the nod because hes outgoing but also plays hard and with passion. Jason Chimera is one alternate because he brings the experience of winning at this tournament before and Kyle Turris is the other because he bridges young and old on the roster. One thing Canadas leadership group has in common is a love for keeping things light on the ice. Thats part of what Bieksa thinks his role is, but he also expects his teammates to take the tournament seriously. “Just to keep guys loose having fun and then focused for the games,” the Vancouver Canucks defenceman said. “Everybodys coming over here for a purpose. We didnt fly all this way just to have a good time. We flew here to win games and to continue on the standard that Canada set at the Olympics. Were going to come to compete.” At 32, Bieksa is the fourth-oldest player on the team, younger than only Chimera (35), Joel Ward (33) and Alex Burrows (32). There are also a handful of very young players, including Nathan MacKinnon (18), Sean Monahan (19), Jonathan Huberdeau (20), and Mark Scheifele (21). Bieksa is in charge of helping meld this diverse group together. “Its been pretty seamless so far. Everybody brings something to the table,” Bieksa said after practice at Chizhovka-Arena. “The young guys are young and (add) a new perspective and energy and the older guys, theres some guys that have played in this tournament a few times and they know what to expect and you lean on them for some advice. Its a good mix.” Chimera is Canadas only player with an IIHF World Hockey Championship gold medal, won in 2007 in Moscow. His message to a lot of his teammates is that they never know when theyll be able to wear the Maple Leaf again. That could be true of Chimera, too, and if it is the Washington Capitals winger is making sure he enjoys it. Even with two children at home, his wife was supportive of him coming to Minsk to play in his third world championship. “Hockey keeps you young,” said Chimera, whos 4 1/2 years too young to be able to play without a visor. “Its just awesome, you see these young kids, how talented they are, they keep it light. A lot of them were pretty nervous coming over here, but I try to keep it as light as possible.” Thursdays first practice in Minsk following an exhibition game against Switzerland in Zurich was light but up-tempo. Tippett and assistants Paul Maurice and Peter DeBoer had plenty of teaching to do a day before Canada opens the tournament against France. James Reimer will start against France, while Ben Scrivens is set to start against Slovakia on Saturday night. “It goes solely off seniority,” Tippett said. “Scrivens was upset because he thought he shouldve got the call because he had 19 seconds longer than Reimer the other day (in the exhibition game).” Reimer is playing at the world championships for the second time after going 4-0-0 in 2011 before being replaced by now-Toronto Maple Leafs teammate Jonathan Bernier. With Scrivens — whos now with the Edmonton Oilers - on board this time, Reimer is sharing the net with a former teammate. Come the start of the 2014-15 NHL season, he very well could have another goaltending partner if the Leafs trade the restricted free agent. Reimers season in Toronto didnt go as he planned, and its only natural for him to think scouts and general managers will be watching him in Minsk. “I assume so. I think theyre scouting everyone,” Reimer said. “I think everyones taking a peek at whoever might have a contract up or might not, thats what theyre here to do. Any time youre playing, especially in a different situation, theyre watching to see how you react and respond. But in every NHL game theres scouts and GMs watching, too. Its just one of those things wherever youre playing competitively, people will be watching.” Theres plenty for Tippett to watch for early in this tournament that could affect his plan going forward. On Thursday he kept the top line of Burrows, Turris and MacKinnon together from Tuesdays exhibition game and tinkered elsewhere. Nazem Kadri centred Cody Hodgson and Troy Brouwer, while Philadelphia Flyers teammates Brayden Schenn and Matt Read skated with Huberdeau. Chimera and Capitals teammate Ward remained together, and Tippett said hell keep an eye on having either Scheifele or Monahan between them. Because this tournament is such a “scramble” with so little preparation time, Tippett is just trying to get create some chemistry before the first puck drop. “Youve got to get your players in roles early,” he said. “Always subject to change, but I think one of the most important factors of a tournament like this is you try to get everybody in their spots as quick as you can.” That starts with establishing Bieksa as captain. Burrows voiced support for that choice because his Canucks teammate is good at bringing people together. “He keeps it fun, he likes to have a good time,” Burrows said. “But at the same time when its time to work and do the right things, hes the first one to lead the way.” [url=http://www.raidersproshop.us.com/Womens-DJHayde…. Its time for rudimentary math; time to let the players worry about winning today while others concern themselves with the broader, increasingly bleak, picture. Write down the numbers one to 12 in ascending order. Each time Toronto loses a game, mark an X through the corresponding number. Why 13? Given the way the season is trending, the Blue Jays need to win at least 88 games to qualify for a playoff spot. With a record of 64-62 after Tuesdays action, in order to be 88-74 by seasons end Toronto had to go 24-12. Thats just for a chance. The American League East leading Orioles are on pace for 94 wins. In the race for the second wild card spot, the leader Mariners are eyeing an 88-win season; the runner up Tigers are looking at 88 victories (rounded up on percentage points); the Yankees are on pace for 83 wins. The Blue Jays, playing at a .508 clip, would end up in the 82-win neighbourhood. Thats not going to get it done. Whats more disconcerting are signs of fraying in the starting rotation. Through the first seven games of this eight-game road trip, Toronto pitching had allowed 11 first inning runs (two on Tuesday night). “Just another game where we gave up a lot of runs early and we couldnt do anything with (Brewers starter Mike) Fiers,” said manager John Gibbons. “He did a nice job. A lot lately weve been giving up some runs early.” Playing come-from-behind on a near-daily basis isnt ideal for an offence which has gone cold. In 16 games this month, the Jays have scored 48 runs or exactly three per game. One of the main culprits is the decline in home run production. Despite the recent downturn the Jays season total of 141 remains tied for second-most in baseball (with Colorado) behind Baltimores 157. The Jays have hit only seven long balls in the month of August (16 games). “Power comes and goes,” said hitting coach Kevin Seitzer. “Its kind of one oof those things when guys get hot they can usually get hot together and home runs are usually just a by-product of good at-bats and good swings and catching balls out front a little bit more.dddddddddddd” The Jays are one of three teams in the American League which require the home run to cash more than 40-percent of their runs scored, which is to say if Toronto doesnt hit the long ball, most of the time it wont score enough. Entering Tuesdays play, 225 of Torontos 558 runs (40.3-percent) were cashed via the home run. Theyre joined by Baltimore (251 of 531 – 47.2-percent) and Houston (219 of 501 – 43.7-percent). Nine teams come in the 30-39.9-percent range and the remainder fall below. The hope is the recent returns of Edwin Encarnacion (26 home runs) and Adam Lind (who despite having only four home runs, is a crucial middle-of-the-order bat against right-handed starting pitching) from injury will lengthen the lineup and pave the way to more pop. “A lot of times when guys try to compensate because of a lack of power and try to do a little too much then it works against you,” said Seitzer. “I think thats kind of where were at right now. As far as overall as a team we didnt start off very good home run-wise the first month of the season and then all of a sudden in May it came in bunches and it came for a long time.” Seitzer is looking to hits with runners in scoring position (RISP), specifically hits with runners in scoring position and two outs. Hes sensing players, especially the Jays best, are pressing. One example would be Jose Bautista, whos a .300 hitter with RISP this season but that number dwindles to .111 (4-for-36) with RISP and two outs. With Tuesday nights loss, Cleveland pulled even with the Blue Jays in the wild card race. The more teams youre chasing, the less likely it is you can gain ground on a nightly basis. Time is ticking away. Dont lose sight of your pencil. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

Canadas entire womens moguls team is headed for the medal round in Sochi. A strong Canadian contingent battled down the challenging moguls run on Thursday at Rosa Khutor Exreme Park, keeping Canadas hope for another Olympic medal in womens moguls alive. The Dufour-Lapointe sisters — Chloe, Justine and Maxime — along with teammate Audrey Robichaud finished in the top 10 to earn direct berths into Saturdays final. Chloe Dufour-Lapointe led the charge by posting a score of 22.64 to finish second behind reigning Olympic champion Hannah Kearney of the United States, who scored 22.05. Justine Dufour-Lapointe, the youngest sister at 19, finished third with a score of 22.28, while sister Maxime finished the day in eighth after scoring 20.88 on her qualifying run. Veteran Team Canada member Audrey Robichaud also advanced to Saturdays medal round, scoring 20.61 and finishing in ninth place. Robichaud, the only “non-Dufour-Lapointe” on the womens team, is happy to ski alongside the trio of sisters in Sochi. “People call me the other, but I think that might be playing into my favour,” said Robichaud. “I just do my thing. I do what I love, which is skiing.” Canadian coaches Jean-Paul Richard and Marc-Andre Moreau were pleased with the performance of their athletes in Thursdays qualifying runs. “It is a good day at the office,” said Richard. “It was the plan and the hope to get all four in the top 10.” As for what the womens team can accomplish in Saturdays final, Canadian medal expectations remain high. “All four are capable,” said Moreau. “It is a hard course but they have reacted well to it. If they do what they have to do then they all have the potential to get on the podium.” The rest of the field will compete for the remaining 10 spots in a second qualification run on Saturday before the final at 10 pm ET. Things just went our way in foul situations when its been the other team getting breaks.” Millsap had 24 points and 11 rebounds, Jeff Teague added 15 points and 10 assists, and the Atlanta Hawks rallied for their third straight win with a 97-92 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night. Kenneth Faried finished with 25 points and Wilson Chandler scored 12 for the Nuggets, who were coming off a dramatic victory Friday at two-time defending champion Miami. Kyle Korver, who hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to make it 96-92, had 18 points and Pero Antic added 16 for Atlanta. Before winning Monday at Utah, the Hawks had dropped from third to eighth in the Eastern Conference during their 1-14 stretch. The Hawks are 3 1/2 games ahead of New York for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Atlantas three-game winning streak is its longest since beating the Jazz on Dec. 20. “We knew they were going to make a run, but I think our mindset was just goiing back to being an aggressive team,” said DeMarre Carroll, who had 11 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Hawks.dddddddddddd"I think our biggest thing is we just have to keep staying aggressive for the entire game instead of just for 36 minutes or 40 minutes." Faried gave the Nuggets a 92-91 lead on a three-point play, but they trailed the rest of the way after Antic hit a long jumper over Faried from the left corner and Wilson Chandler missed a 3 that gave Atlanta possession with 30 seconds to go. The Nuggets, who had erased a 14-point deficit Friday in a 102-97 victory at Miami, had won two straight and four of six. After Korvers 3 made it 16-3, Denver coach Brian Shaw called timeout, and the Nuggets went on a 23-15 run, but they trailed 53-37 on Teagues three-point play with 12 seconds left before halftime. Atlanta went ahead by 21 early in the third on Antics 3, but Denver cut the lead to seven on Foyes 3 at the 5-minute mark, and the Nuggets only trailed by six entering the fourth. “Just a case of too little, too late,” Shaw said. “We were real lethargic in the first half. We needed to play the way we played the end of the third quarter (and during the) fourth quarter from the start of the game.” NOTES: Antics long jumper with 41.8 seconds remaining was originally scored as a 3, but officials changed the call after watching a replay. … Carrolls double-double was the second of his career. … J.J. Hickson scored 12 points for Denver. … The Nuggets outscored Atlanta 44-26 in the paint and 39-13 off the bench, but Atlanta converted 21 turnovers into 25 points. … The Hawks have won five of six at home against Denver and are 20-3 since 1989-90 versus the Nuggets in Atlanta. … Atlanta, the NBA assists leader, handed out 25. The Hawks have had 20 assists in 60 of 64 games this season. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

MILWAUKEE — Ryan Braun hadnt done much except get hit by a pitch. He made up for it with one swing in the bottom of the ninth. Braun was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning that scored a run and had an RBI single in the ninth, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night. “I got beat up pretty good,” Braun said. “Ill take it. Ill take them both.” Braun thought the Rockies might pitch around him. He had already struck out twice and grounded out while Jonathan Lucroy had two hits and a RBI. “Typically, there is probably a higher likelihood that they pitch around me,” Braun said. “I have been swinging so terribly and Luc has been swinging so great that that combination probably enticed them to at least come at me a little bit.” Rockies manager Walt Weiss told reliever Matt Belisle to pitch carefully to Braun, but the strategy didnt work. “Ill always take responsibility for that one,” Walt Weiss said. “Could have put him on. Its a tough situation for Mattie. Hes trying to get him to expand for a couple of pitches. The ball was maybe a little up. Braun went up and got it.” Mark Reynolds led off the ninth with a single off Belisle (2-3) and advanced on a sacrifice by Jean Segura. Scooter Gennett pinch hit for Francisco Rodriguez (3-2) and was intentionally walked. The runners advanced on a passed ball by catcher Michael McKenry. After Rickie Weeks went down swinging, Braun drilled Belisles first pitch up the middle. “I dont think they were trying to throw it where he ended up throwing it,” Braun said after collecting his first walk-off hit since 2011. Josh Rutledge tied the game when he homered off Rodriguez with one out in the ninth. Rutledge hit a 3-2 pitch that just barely cleared the wall in left for his second homer this season. Rodriguez was trying to help Kyle Lohse win his third straight start. Lohse has been victimized by five blown saves this season. He allowed one run on seven hits over seven innings and came within two outs of beating the Rockies for the second time in five days. Sunday, he pitched five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits in the Brewers 6-5 win in Colorado. Rodriguez leads the majors with 27 saves, but this was his third blown save this season. Lohse had plenty of sympathy for Rodriguez. “I feel bad for K-Rod because hes been pitching so well, but the bottom line is we won,” Lohse said. “He came in and did what he does. Ill take K-Rod closing out one of my games any time.” The Brewers became the first team in the majors to record 50 wins. Their NL-leading record (50-32) is the best in team history through 82 games. They have 13 games left to top the team record of 54 wins before the All-Star game. The Brewers also improved to 5-0 in the season series with the Rockies. “Its nice to be the first one to 50 wins, for sure,” Braun said. “Were excited with the way that weve played so far, but theres still a lot of baseball left.” The Brewers went ahead 2-1 in the seventh. Khris Davis doubled off Nick Masset to start the inning and Reynolds followed with a walk. Both advanced on a sacrifice by Segura. When Lyle Overbay was announced as the pinch hitter for Lohse, the Rockies brought in Rex Brothers. The Brewers countered with Martin Maldonado, who struck out swinging. After Weeks walked, Adam Ottavino came on to face Braun and hit him with the first pitch. Lucroy hit into a fielders choice for the third out. The Rockies scored their run in the seventh on a sacrifice by pinch-hitter Brandon Barnes that scored Rutledge. The Brewers scored first when Lucroy chopped an RBI single over second base off rookie Tyler Matzek in the sixth. Matzek went six innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three. NOTES: The Rockies challenged the call when Carlos Gomez was ruled safe at second in the eighth inning. The decision was reversed in under 2 minutes. . Rockies C Wilin Rosario, who left Thursday nights game with lower back tightness, missed the game. Weiss said that the injury was not serious, but enough to keep him out of the lineup. . Rockies RHP Nolan Arenado (broken left middle finger) heads to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Sunday for a rehab assignment. . Troy Tulowitzkis double in the fourth was his 400th career extra-base hit. . RHP Matt Garza (4-5, 3.20 ERA) faces Colorados RHP Jhoulys Chacin (1-6, 4.84) on Saturday. nfl jerseys china . Bayern led second-place Leverkusen by 10 points with a game in hand, while Dortmund was another four points off the pace. Freiburg midfielder Felix Klaus scored in the last minute as his side twice came from behind to climb provisionally out of the relegation zone. cheap nfl jerseys . 1. PHIL JACKSON: Would be a major coup of the NY Knicks to get him as their President. Bottom line, owner James Dolan needs to stay out of the way. Jackson must have the ability to select his GM, front office staff, coaches, support staff and have final say on all player issues. http://www.cheapnfljerseyschinaplay.com/. Heading into the final round with a two-stroke lead, Donald had seven birdies and two bogeys at the par-71 Phoenix Country Club to finish at 14-under 270 on the Japan Tour. cheap jerseys from china . Grabner scored on a breakaway 3:53 into overtime as the Islanders defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 on Tuesday. wholesale nfl jerseys . The assistants greeted Aldridge with compliments and high fives. Stotts had only one word for his high-scoring forward: “Thanks.” Aldridge had 25 points and 16 rebounds in his return after missing seven games with a lower back contusion, and the Trail Blazers beat the Atlanta Hawks 100-85 on Thursday night to end a three-game losing streak.MIAMI — The last offensive play for the Miami Heat did not go as planned. In the eyes of Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, the two-time defending NBA champions pretty much botched the whole thing. Except the ending, that is. “It helps to have LeBron James,” Spoelstra said. James bailed out the play — and delivered the eventual game-winner in the process. His jumper with 15.1 seconds left provided the final points, and the Heat rallied from 16 down in the second half to beat the Orlando Magic 101-99 on Saturday night. Dwyane Wade scored 27 points in his return to the lineup after missing two games to rest his knees, James added 22 and Chris Bosh had 15 for the Heat (10-3), who have won six straight. This marked the first time the Heat needed to rally in the final quarter. “I cleared out and he did the rest,” Wade said of Miamis final offensive play. “He made an unbelievable shot.” Glen Davis, playing for the first time since Jan. 30 because of a broken left foot, scored 20 points for the Magic, who fell to 0-5 on the road. Arron Afflalo and Victor Oladipo had shots in the final 5 seconds, but neither fell — Oladipos skipped off both sides of the rim — and Miami escaped when James got the games last rebound as time expired. He threw the ball downcourt, tossed his headband and wristbands into the stands, and exhaled deeply. “LeBron in space, and hell take care of the rest,” Spoelstra said of Miamis last play. “But the execution before that was extremely poor, very poor. And he just did what great players do. He was very relaxed, calm, got to a spot where he felt comfortable and shot a great in-rhythm jump shot that made all of us look better.” Afflalo scored 18, Oladipo added 17 and ETwaun Moore had all of his 14 points in the first half for Orlando, which let one slip away. In the first 43 minutes, the Heat led for all of 54 seconds, and were getting blown out for a while. In the end, they had the only lead that mattered. “We know that they are a team that can get things going pretty quickly,” Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. Boshs jumper with 4:30 remaining put Miami up 89-88, and from there it got frantic to the end. James made a 3-pointer over Davis for another Heat lead with 3:47 left,, then took a charge against the burly power forward 19 seconds later, grimacing as he got off the hardwood.dddddddddddd Miami led by four points on a pair of occasions, and the lead was three with just under a minute to play. Afflalo missed a 3-pointer that would have tied it, but Davis got the rebound, went into the lane, drew contact from Bosh and got a shot to fall. The free throw rattled and dropped with 37 seconds left, and the teams were tied at 99-all. Orlando didnt score again. “I wouldnt want to come back against no other team,” said Davis, who got three stitches near his right eye after the game. “This was a great team to come back and play. Im just happy to be back no matter if were playing the NBA champs or were playing (the New Orleans) Pelicans or something, Im just happy to play basketball and show the world that I can contribute to a team. Im just happy Im back.” James added nine rebounds and seven assists for the Heat, plus reached double figures for the 508th straight regular-season game, tying Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the fifth-longest streak in NBA history. Moore had all his points in the second quarter, on 5 for 5 shooting, 4 for 4 from 3-point range. When Afflalo got a 3-pointer to rattle off the rim a couple times and finally fall with 7 seconds left in the half, the Magic owned a 55-39 lead to take into the intermission. By the time Orlando got its first points of the second half, that lead was largely gone. Miami opened with 10 straight points in the third quarter, with James hitting a pair of 3-pointers and Wade capping it all by going down the middle of the lane for a dunk. Just like that, 55-39 became 55-49, and the Heat had life. And in the end, they had a win as well, albeit a much tougher one than the 28-point romp at Orlando on Wednesday. “Thats the nature of the game,” Wade said. “We knew they were going to play better tonight.” NOTES: After playing twice in four days, the teams do not meet again until Miami visits Orlando on Jan. 4. … James had a stuff-like-only-he-does sequence in the third quarter when he got a deflection and steal, gathered the loose ball, dribbled upcourt and threaded a one-handed crosscourt pass between plenty of Orlando defenders to set Ray Allen up for a 3-pointer. FIVE QUICK HOOPS THOUGHTS 1. SPURS WIN TITLE: The model NBA franchise. Bottom line, Im hopeful that everyone saw how beautiful the game is when its played with the team concept in mind and thats the right way to play. In a society where if very “Copycat” aligned, this could be a really good development for the game as a whole on all levels. Every coach out there has the blueprint that we all witnessed for the sacrifice and selfless play that is the core principle of the sport. Now its on every coach to demand that the game be played (and important for folks in authority to back this concept and their leaders) in the proper fashion with We/Us always coming first before I/Me and a guys nonsensical “brand”. Youre a player, not a “brand”. Its a TEAM game – always will be. Fingers crossed that young players across the globe and particularly here in North America (where some have a warped view of what the sport is) see this as a cool way of playing the game and that the “pass” is a great way of “expressing yourself”. 2. LEBRON JAMES (Heat): Im tired of the knuckleheads that bash him vs. Michael Jordan. Hes a totally different player in a different era. The guy plays hard, is a great teammate and is the only reason the Heat even were able to compete in short stretches. I saw no Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Horace Grant, Toni Kucoc, John Paxson or Steve Kerr out there for Miami in this series. The guy was fighting many times on his own. Hed be a guy that I would be honoured to coach and Id say more than 99 per cent of players – current and retired – would love to have him as a teammate. Is he as good as Jordan? No. So what? Its not like he isnt laying it on the line each night. Hes still terrific and not the problem. Im far from an apologist. He has made his fair share of mistakes but at the core, he carries himself properly and values the team concept. I would take him any day of the week on my team. 3. CARMELO ANTHONY (Knicks): I said this after Game 4 and Ill say it again, I think the Melo to Miami rumours were a distraction to the Heat – particularly to guys like Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. By the way, the two of them played poorly to say the least (24 points combined on 26 shots in Game 5). Not sure where he ends up but hes a wonderfully talented player who is an amazing scorer who Im not totally sold understands the 10-man (5-on-5) game and the value of team play. He needs a very strong coach and point guard to get him to see the light. In my opinion, Jason Kidd really helped him last season in his final year as a player, allowing him to understand the right way to play. With him though, its a daily fight to continue to get him to shake off bad habits and buy in to the value of the team game. He knows right from wrong – hes a big boy with tons of talent and money. Accountability is key with him. You keep him on the right path and he can really help you but you have to battle him every day. Ask George Karl – thats tiring. It can be done though. You need great energy and persistence to get him to do it each day. Teams need to decide if they want to fight that fight. 4. SHANE BATTIER and RAY ALLEN (Heat): Battier has already announced his retirement (guys actually retire? Not too often these days – normally guys hang on for anther deal as long as possible) and Allen might choose the same path. Both of them are FIRST CLASS, top-notch professionals who got everything out of their games. They had work ethics off the charts and are coachable. Wonderful examples of the best the game has to offer. Have always admired their approach. When you think of all the lucky guys who had a chance to play with these guys over the years, it has made the game better. Their influence and maturity were impactful, as was their play. 5. DAVID BLATT (Coach): Has had great success overseas and in international competition. Happy to see his name mentioned for the Cavaliers head coaching job as well as the top assistant job with the Warriors. Long overdue. Hes a top-notch offensive coach and gets a ton out of the talent level at his disposal. Very adaptable and creative. Would be a nice addition to the NBA coaching fraternity in some role. The Kings were beaten on a goal by Logan Couture after the Sharks played the entire 89 seconds of overtime on the power play. The Kings were received penalties for both hooking and goaltender interference in the final minute of regulation play. WATERLOO, Ont. — Kelsey Thomson scored the only shootout goal as Queens defeated the defending champion Alberta Pandas 2-1 at the CIS womens hockey championship on Friday. “Im so proud of them,” said Queens head coach Matt Holmberg. “At the beginning of the game there was a bit of nervousness, Alberta is a great team, and we managed to weather the early storm.” The Gaels got off to a strong start on a 5-on-3 power play, with Elizabeth Kench scoring the games first goal. She beat a defender to get to the high slot. The Pandas got on the board in the second period with a 5-on-3 power play of their own. Leah Copeland scored over sprawling goalie Mel Dodd-Moher from the side of the net. With 1:56 left in the third period Panda Leah Copeland took an elbowing penalty, but the Gaels couldnt capitalize, sending the team to their sixth straight overtime in the post-season. The Gaels have played 178:42 minutes in overtime this post-season, including the longest game in collegiate history, prior to this game. “We have the determination that we arent going to lose,” said Dodd-Moher. “When we go into overtime, we arent scared.” Thomson was the first shooter and beat Kanese Schwetz. That goal would stand up as the winner as Dodd-Moher shut the door on all three Panda shooters. “I think we all feel we could have done a better job when the result isnt the result you want,” said Alberta head coach Howie Draper. Dodd-Moher finished with 34 saves on 35 shots. Pandas goalie Kanesa Shwetz made 28 saves. The Gaaels will take on the McGill Martlets on Saturday while Alberta plays in the fifth place game on Sunday.dddddddddddd In Fridays other game, Golden Hawks goalie Liz Knox made 20 saves for the tournaments first shutout as No. 5 Wilfrid Laurier upset the No. 3 Manitoba Bisons 4-0. Devon Skeats, Andrea Shapero, Tammy Freiburger and Fiona Lester scored for the Golden Hawks. “We all dug down and pulled it together and it showed tonight,” said Lauriers Shapero. Freiburger opened the scoring when she came out of a scrum in front of goalie Tara Lacquette and slid a puck through the five-hole at the 15:30 mark of the first period. Shapero made it 2-0 at the 13:12 mark of the second and Skeats slid the puck past Lacquette at the 8:13 of the third. With game winding down, Lester found a loose puck in front and fired in past Lacquette who had no chance on the play at the 17:23 mark. “After last nights game we were a little discouraged, we just rallied as a team and supported each the whole way and thats what got us the motivation out there today,” said Knox. With the win, Laurier still has a chance to advance to the gold medal game. If St. FX beats Manitoba on Saturday then they will advance to the gold medal game and Laurier will play for bronze. However, if Manitoba beats St. FX where the goal differential is less than eight then Laurier will advance to the gold medal game and St. FX will play for bronze. If Manitoba wins by eight or more then they would advance to the gold medal game, Laurier would play for bronze. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

NEW YORK - Michael Jordan has been fined by the NBA for making comments about the leagues ongoing collective bargaining process. NBA spokesman Tim Frank confirmed the penalty for the Charlotte Bobcats owner on Monday, but said the league doesnt comment on the total. ESPN.com reported the fine was $100,000. In an interview last month with Australias Herald Sun, Jordan said the NBAs current model was “broken” and called for revenue sharing for small market teams such as his Bobcats and the Milwaukee Bucks, whom Australian Andrew Bogut plays for. The Hall of Famer added that he knows “owners are not going to move off what we feel is very necessary for us to get a deal in place where we can coexist as partners.” The NBA prohibits owners from speaking publicly about the labour situation. PITTSBURGH — Scoop Jardine had 16 points and eight assists to lead top-seeded Syracuse to a 75-59 victory over eighth-seeded Kansas State on Saturday in the third round of the East Regional. Dion Waiters had 18 points and James Southerland added 15 for the Orange (33-2), who didnt wait until the final minutes to seal the win as they did in the second round against 16th-seeded North Carolina-Asheville. Montreals Kris Joseph scored 11 for Syracuse, which plays the winner of the Vanderbilt-Wisconsin game in Boston on Thursday night in the regional semifinals. Rodney McGruder had 15 points for the Wildcats (22-11), who struggled from the field against Syracuses 2-3 zone defence. Neither team had its leading rebounder. Syracuses seven-foot Fab Melo, the Big East Defensive Player of the Year, was declared ineligible by the school for the rest of the tournament earlier in the week. About 20 minutes before the start of this game, Kansas State announced that Jamar Samuels would be held out over an eligibility issue. Among those in the crowd at Consol Energy Center was Vice-President Joe Biden, who went to law school at Syracuse. This is Syracuses 17th appearance overall and third straight in the round of 16. The Orange, who had already set a school record for wins in a season, were ranked No. 1 for six weeks this season and were never out of the top five. They hadnt looked that way lately, even in their wins. Syracuse scored fewer than 70 points — it averages 74.5 — in five of the last seven games. The Orange shot better than 46.5 per cent from the field — their mark for the season — only once, and the stretch included three-point performances of 1 for 15, 5 for 20 and 3 for 14. Against UNC-Asheville, they shot 44.6 per cent overall and 5 for 23 on threes, and that included making one of their first 13. It was a lot different against Kansas State, especially with the strong second half. Southerland was 5 of 6 from the field and Jardine and Waiters were both 5 of 9. With Waiters going 7 of 7 and Joseph 7 of 8, the Orange finished 23 of 29 from the free-throw line, while the Wildcats were 13 of 19. Rakeem Christmas, who moved into Melos spot in the starting lineup, had eight points and 11 rebounds for Syracusee, which shot 66.dddddddddddd7 per cent in the second half (14 of 21), including making all five of its attempts from behind the 3-point line. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, whose 889 wins rank third on the Division I list behind Mike Krzyzewski and Bob Knight, earned his 47th NCAA tournament victory, tied with John Wooden for fifth place. Jordan Henriquez had 14 points and 17 rebounds for Kansas State, which dominated the rebounding throughout, finishing with a 41-32 advantage. Henriquez had 11 of the Wildcats 25 offensive rebounds, but they were only able to turn them into 20 second-chance points. McGruder had 30 points in the second-round win over Southern Mississippi but he was just 5 of 13 from the field against the Orange. Syracuse, which didnt take the lead for good against Asheville until there were 6 minutes to play and then saw the Bulldogs get within three points three times in the closing 1:20, took the lead for good Saturday with 18:20 to go on a three-pointer by Jardine. The Orange pushed the lead to double figures on two free throws by Southerland that made it 45-34 with 12:52 to play. Waiters three-point play with 5:19 left had the Orange ahead 63-47, and they were in control the rest of the way. Kansas State, which had three wins this season over teams ranked in the top 10, was last in the regional semifinals in 2010. It was a first half of runs that left Syracuse with a 25-24 lead. Kansas State opened the game on a 9-2 spurt, another in a streak of bad starts for the Orange. They didnt wait long, however, to put together a 21-3 run to take a 23-12 lead with 8:09 to play. Joseph and Waiters scored all but two of Syracuses point in the run and it looked as though the Orange were going to take control as the Wildcats missed shots from the field and the free-throw line and turned the ball over time and again against Syracuses 2-3 zone. But it was Kansas States turn to go on a run and the Wildcats, playing mostly reserves, closed the half on an 11-2 spurt to make it a one-point game at halftime. Both teams struggled shooting in the first half and the Wildcats dominated the rebounding 28-16, including grabbing 15 on the offensive end. But they only turned those into nine points. GLASGOW — Recently crowned Scottish champion Celtic dealt a blow to Motherwells hopes of qualifying for next seasons Champions League by easing to a comfortable 3-0 win at Fir Park on Sunday. A double by debutant Tony Watt and a late strike from Cha Du-ri sealed victory for Celtic, which secured a first title since 2008 two weeks ago. Motherwell could qualify for the Champions League if it stays in third place because Rangers, which is currently 11 points ahead in second, is unlikely to be eligible for Europe next season after falling into administration — a form of financial bankruptcy. However, the loss left Motherwell only three points clear of fourth-place Dundee United with four matches remaining. . He passed for more than 3,800 yards three times, including a career-best 4,301 in 2006, the only season he played all 16 games. After parting with St. Louis after the 2009 season, he spent last year with the Ravens but did not play. “Moving forward, Im excited to continue doing work through my foundation to help the men and women in uniform who risk their lives every day so we can enjoy the game of football,” he told ESPN.com. LONDON - Total prize money for this years Wimbledon tournament will reach 25 million pounds ($42 million), an increase of 10.8 per cent that will mostly favour the early-round losers. The All England Club said Tuesday that the mens and womens singles champions will each receive 1.76 million pounds ($2.9 million), a 10 per cent increase on last years top prize won by Andy Murray and Marion Bartoli. By comparison, this years French Open champions will receive 1.65 million euros ($2.3 million) while Stanislas Wawrinka and Li Na earned $2.65 million for their wins at the Australian Open in January. U.S. Open organizers have yet to announce the prize money for this years tournament. The main increases at Wimbledon are for the early losers, with players who fail to get past the third round receiving prize money worth 12.5 per cent more than in 2013. “Weve placed emphasis on the large group of players who need our help the most, those players who lose in qualifying and in the early rounds of the championships,” Wimbledon chairman Philip Brook said. “We also had an eye to being competitive internationally, and we do keep our watch on what is going on in other tennis events and in particular the other Grand Slams.” The grass-court Grand Slam will be played from June 23-July 6. In keeping with player demands for a larger slice of Grand Slam revenues, all four majors have greatly increased their prize money in the past two years, with Wimbledon offering the biggest amount following a record 40 per cent increase last year. The French Open now offers more than 25 million euros ($34.5 million) while the U.S. Open increased its purse to $34.3 million and the Australian Open went up to AU$33 million ($31 million). The Wimbledon prize money for the majority of singles players who lose in the first three rounds of the grass-court tournament has been increased by more than 100 per cent over a three-year period. The main increase this year is for first-round losers, with each receiving 27,000 pounds ($45,450), 14.9 per cent more than last year. “This year weve got a very generous increase once again,” Brook said. “We wanted to build on the focus from 2012 and 2013.” There will also be an increase of 8.7 per cent in prize money for doubles and a 6.1 per cent increase for mixed doubles. In all, an extra 2.4 million pounds ($4 million) is up for grabs compared to last year. Brook said plans to build a retractable roof on Court No. 1 are still on track pending planning approval, with an application to be submitted later this year. The roof, similar to the one on Centre Court, should be completed in 2019, and court capacity will be increased by 900 seats to 12,400. Brook also confirmed the tournament will start a week later in 2015 to create a three-week gap between the French Open and Wimbledon, with the mens final on July 12. “Hopefully with the extra week more players will be encouraged to compete on grass,” Brook said. Seedings for this years tournament will be announced on June 18. Brook said defending champion Murray, who has slipped to eighth in the rankings, will stay among the top seeds thanks to his strong record on grass over the past two years. Wimbledons seeding order is determined using the ATP rankings and points are added for achievements in grass-court tournaments in the past 12 months. “And we add to that 75 per cent of the best-performing tournament in the previous year,” Brook said. “For Andy Murray, as the winner of Queens last year and the winner here last year, and a finalist here in 2012, there will be a significant impact on him.” Brooks said the seedings will also have “significant impact” on seven-time champion Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, Brook said. Brook did not comment on speculation of a possible return to competition by Bartoli ahead of Wimbledon. The 29-year-old Frenchwoman retired suddenly after a loss at Cincinnati last August, explaining that her body could no longer take the strain after 14 years as a pro. When asked if her entourage had been in touch recently and if Bartoli would be granted a wild card if she asked for one, Brook said: “The rumours in France have not reached London yet, so well wait and see.” . — Vincent Viola grew up in Brooklyn, graduated from West Point, is a former chairman of the New York Mercantile Exchange and after the Sept. ANAHEIM, Calif. — This was one time when C.J. Wilson didnt question manager Mike Scioscias decision to remove him from a game while an inning was in progress. Despite the fact that a bout with the flu had sapped his energy, he still was able to dominate the Chicago White Sox for 7 1-3 innings. Wilson bounced back strongly from his shortest outing of the season, taking a three-hit shutout into the eighth, and Josh Hamilton drove in three runs to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. Wilson (7-5) was charged with one run, struck out six, and was lifted after 107 pitches. Last Tuesday at Houston, the left-hander gave up five runs, six hits and five walks through 2 2-3 innings in a 7-2 loss. “I dont even remember what happened five days ago. Ive just been in a stupor,” Wilson said “Ive been sick with the flu the last couple of days, so I didnt really have much in the tank. That was pretty much all I had. I wish could say that I could have gone nine today, or throw 130 pitches, but it just wasnt in the cards.” Joe Smith relieved Wilson, giving up a double to pinch-hitter Alejandro De Aza, a run-scoring infield hit by pinch-hitter Conor Gillaspie and an RBI single by Adam Eaton before retiring Gordon Beckham in a double-play grounder. Ernesto Frieri got three outs for his 10th save. The White Sox concluded a nine-game stretch in Southern California in which they lost two of three to San Diego, won two of three against the Dodgers and were swept by the Angels thanks to Wilsons gem. “Wilson threw a great game. We didnt get anything going, and we were just flat,” manager Robin Ventura said. “We just couldnt get anybody on base. And when we did, he got a couple of double-play balls that really just took the life out of any kind of rally.” Chicago first baseman Jose Abreu started in the designated hitter role for the 10th time and was 0 for 4 with a pair of double-play grounders. A top contender for AL Rookie of the Year, he is 9 for 38 with four homers and 11 RBIs as a DH. “I think we held him in check the whole series, but I think we just sort of got him at a bad time,” Wilson said. Jose Quintana (3-6) allowed four runs, seven hits and four walks through 4 1-3 innings and struck out four. It was the eighth time in the left-handers 13 starts that he left a game with fewer than three runs of support, and he is 0-6 in those outings. “It just seemed like Q was battling all the time with guys on base,” Ventura said. “I mean, hell walk a few guys here and there, but today he was just falling behind and not really locating like he normally does.” Quintana escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first when he retired Hamilton on a popup and struck out C.J. Cron. But Hamilton drove in the Angels first run with a two-out double in the third, then made it 3-0 in the fifth with a bases-loaded two-run single after Quintana walked cleanup hitter David Freese. Cron followed with an RBI single that chased the left-hander. “In situations with guys on base, the biggest thing is putting the ball in play,” Hamilton said. “One time I didnt and two times I did. You do what you can to help the team win. Weve done a great job the last few games getting runners in scoring position with two outs.” Freese, who had never drawn more than two walks in any of his 507 previous regular-season games in the major leagues, got a free pass all four times up — all on 3-2 counts. That tied a franchise record for a nine-inning game, and was the first time it happened since May 18, 2013, when the White Sox walked Chris Iannetta four times. “We worked a lot of walks today. Freese had the force field going today,” Wilson said. “Anytime you put that much pressure on the starting pitcher and knock him out before the fifth inning, thats good.” NOTES: This was the Angels third series sweep this season, and Jered Weaver had recorded a victory in each of them. … The Angels are batting .170 with the bases loaded (8 for 47). … The last time Wilson faced the White Sox was May 17, 2013, when he lost his second 3-0 decision to Chris Sale in a span of six days. … Wilson has pitched at least five innings in 12 of his 13 starts without allowing any fourth-inning runs. … The White Sox, who began the day trailing AL Central-leading Detroit by four games, open a nine-game homestand Monday night with a four-game series against the Tigers. The tournament at River Run Country Club is the second in the four-event series that will determine 25 PGA Tour cards for the 2013-14 season. The bulk of the field is made up of players in the top 75 on the Web.com Tour money list and Nos. 126-200 in the PGA Tours FedEx Cup standings. The top 25 on the Web.com money list are assured PGA Tour cards, while the other players are fighting for 25 additional cards. Loar was fourth on the Web.com Tour money list, and Swafford finished 61st. Kohles was 148th on FedEx Cup list, and OHern was 176th. Swafford missed the cut last week in the series opener in Fort Wayne, Ind. “Ive been getting caught up in worrying about what others are doing around me,” Swafford said. “When I commit to my game plan I play a lot better. … Last week was a liittle unfortunate because it put me behind in getting a tour card.dddddddddddd The only thing I can control is this week.” OHern said River Run is comparable to Sedgefield, the site if the PGA Tours Greensboro event. “Its nice to play a golf course where you have to be in the fairway,” the Australian said. “The greens are very similar and the way the holes are shaped, its right up my alley.” Only 45 players finished under par. “The rough is all you want,” Loar said. “Youve definitely got to golf your ball around here.” Troy Merritt, D.J. Brigman, Peter Tomasulo and Matt Davidson shot 68, and Web.com money champion Michael Putnam was another stroke back along with Jeff Klauk, Bronson LaCassie, Tim Petrovic, Will MacKenzie and Michael Putnam. Japans Ryo Ishikawa had a 70 after missing the cut last week in Fort Wayne. South Africas Trevor Immelman, the winner in Fort Wayne, opened with a 73. OKLAHOMA CITY — The Detroit Pistons had Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. The Oklahoma City Thunder had Kevin Durant. Even on a career night for Caldwell-Pope, advantage Oklahoma City. Durant scored 42 points, including 21 in the fourth quarter, and the Thunder secured the No. 2 playoff seed in the Western Conference, rallying from 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Pistons 112-111 Wednesday night. Oklahoma City (59-23) had lost two straight to put itself in the must-win situation in the regular-season finale to earn the No. 2 seed. Durant rallied the Thunder while recording his 14th 40-point game of the season. He drove for the go-ahead dunk with 16.5 seconds left and won a tip over Greg Monroe with 1.8 seconds to go after a scramble for a loose ball resulted in a jump ball in Detroits end. Detroits Brandon Jennings could only manage a 30-foot heave at the buzzer that banged off the rim. “We just figured it out,” Durant said. “We got it done. It wasnt the best game. We didnt play well defensively. We didnt shoot the ball well offensively. But theres something about just getting it done, having that willpower, having that fight in you, no matter what. It was a tough game, we persevered and we got a good win.” The Thunder extended their winning streak over Detroit (29-53) to nine games, dating to December 2008. Caldwell-Pope scored 30 points for the Pistons (29-53), while Monroe had 22, Kyle Singler added 20 and Andre Drummond recorded his ninth straight double-double to end the season for Detroit, finishing with 22 points and 13 rebounds. “Our guys played their hearts out, competed from the opening tip,” Detroit coach John Loyer said. “I feel terrible for them because they deserved to win the game. They did anything we asked them to do tonight. Some guys stepped up and made some incredible shots and they put together 48 minutes of as good of basketball as we can play.” Russell Westbrook added 22 points for Oklahoma City, which will play Memphis in the first round of the playoffs. It was the ability of Westbrook, and especially Durant, to attack the rim in the fourth quarter that made the difference. Durants fourth quarter left Loyer almost speechless. “Hes one of the top one or two players in the world,” Loyer said. “Thats what he did.” For much of Wednesday, the Thunder looked and played like a tired team. Oklahoma Citys late-season defensive issues were on full display, as the Pistons shot 50.6 per cent from the field and Caldwell-Pope joined other non-marquee players such as Jodie Meeks (Los Angeles Lakers), Gerald Green (Phoenix Suns) and Tyreke Evans (New Orleans Pelicans) in enjoying a career night against the Thunder. Oklahoma City trailed for most of the first half before taking a one-point lead twice in the third quarter. Detroit went on a 15-7 run and took an 87-79 lead on a basket by Jonas Jerebko with 5 seconds left in the quarter. Detroit led 94-84 with 10:13 left in the game after a basket by Monroe. But Durants offensive flurry cut into that gap and the Pistons didnt score a basket in the final 3:17 or at all after Jennings hit two of three free throws with 2:07 left. On the Pistons final possession, the ball found its way to Jerebko, but he lost the handle as Thunder players slapped at the ball and officials ended up calling a tie ball. Caldwell-Pope hit four 3-pointers in the first half — making one over the outstretched arm of the 6-foot-10 Durant — and eclipsed his previous career high of 15 points by the 5:27 mark of the second quarter. His next basket put the Pistons ahead 48-37 with 4:52 left in the first half and hushed the crowd at Chesapeake Energy Arena. Durant, who was 2 of 8 from the field to that point, hit two free throws, then drained a 3-pointer to start a 17-7 run by Oklahoma City. Westbrook scored seven points in the final 2:41 and Durant drained an 18-foot jumper in the final second to pull the Thunder within 55-54. NOTES: Drummond set the Pistons record for highest field-goal percentage in a season, finishing at 62.3 per cent. Dennis Rodman had held the previous team record of 59.5 per cent, set during the 1988-89 season. … Kendrick Perkins was called for a technical foul by official Tony Brothers with 8:01 left in the third quarter when he protested after picking up his fifth foul. … The Thunder recorded their 130th straight regular-season sellout at Chesapeake Energy Arena, which seats 18,203 fans. New Zealand brushed aside England 26-7 to win the event and reclaim top spot in the overall standings. The All Blacks, the defending World Series champions, won their third tournament this season in style, running four tries past England to claim their 11th Cup championship in Hong Kong and first since 2011. Canada finished runner-up to England in Pool C with a 2-1-0 record to reach the quarter-finals of the elite Cup competition for the fourth event in a row. And it led Australia twice in Sundays quarter-final — 5-0 and 12-7 on tries by Harry Jones and Ciaran Hearn — before giving up a converted try in the final minute. Canada then lost 31-14 to Wales in the consolation Plate semifinal. Wales led 19-0 before Canada got on the board. Jones and Sean Duke scored tries for Canada. The Canadians were without captain Nathan Hirayama, ruled out by injury. Canada finished 12th in last years series standings. In Sundays final, first-half tries from Ben Lam and Tim Mikkelson gave New Zealand a 12-0 lead but England hit back just before the break when Tom Powell burst through to touch down from a quickly taken tap penalty to reduce the deficit to just five points. But evergreen captain DJ Forbes, who had a huge impact on the final day with his bustling play at the breakdown, quickly put New Zealand back in command, stretching the lead after receiving a hugge cut-out pass from Sherwin Stowers to score uncontested.dddddddddddd “We were given a lesson by England last week (in Tokyo) but here we are on the podium. It feels good to win in Hong Kong again,” said an elated Forbes. Despite a second try by Lam being overturned, and the winger being penalized for an off-the-ball offence, the men in black had too much firepower and sub Sam Dickson sealed victory with his sides fourth try. The victory allowed New Zealand to regain the lead from South Africa who had entered the Hong Kong Sevens holding a two-point lead. With two more legs remaining in Scotland and England in May, New Zealand top the standings with 136 points, seven points ahead of South Africa who stumbled badly after losing in the Cup quarter-finals to England, 14-7. Fiji are third on 112 while England fourth on 105. England had booked its berth in the Cup final with a 17-7 victory over Fiji in the semifinal. Fiji had looked impressive in the run-up and seemed on course for back-to-back titles after winning in Tokyo last week but came undone against a disciplined English side. New Zealands path to the final was a 28-5 win over Wales in the quarter-finals followed by a 19-7 victory over trans-Tasman rivals Australia. Japan became the first Asian team to win a core team spot on the World Series when it won the qualifying tournament defeating Italy 26-5. Japan will play in the remaining two legs this season in Scotland and England, and all nine legs in the World Series next season. Sweden wont have Henrik Zetterberg for the rest of the 2014 Sochi Olympics due to injury, the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation announced Friday. The teams captain, who has a herniated disc in his back, missed 13 games for the Detroit Red Wings during the current NHL season. Zetterberg scored a goal and logged 18:14 of ice time in Swedens Olympic opener against the Czech Republic on Wednesday. The Swedes won 4-2. The 33-year-old centreman missed the teams practice Thursday to receive treatment. Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Zetterberg will return to Detroit for evaluation in the next day or two. Holland also said the Red Wings captain wont be available to play for Detroit after the Olympic break. According to International Ice Hockey Federation rules, Zetterberg cannot be replaced on Swedens team as the rosters for the 12 competing nations were locked when the opening game of the tournament started. Zetterberg, a four-time Olympian, won gold with Sweden in Turin in 2006. Sweden takes on Switzerland on Friday (olympics.cbc.ca, TSN, 7:30 a.m. ET). ATLANTA — Kirk Hinrich made all the right moves for the Chicago Bulls in the final minute of the game. Not so much for Jeff Teague and the Atlanta Hawks. Hinrich buried six big free throws down the stretch and Teague had a couple of costly turnovers as the Bulls held on for a 107-103 victory at Atlanta on Tuesday night. Mike Dunleavy scored 22 points for the Bulls, who have won six of seven. Joakim Noah had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Carlos Boozer finished with 17 points and 11 boards. Dunleavy also had eight rebounds and four assists. He was covered in ice bags as he sat slumped at his locker after playing all but nine seconds in the game. “I appreciate (coach Tom Thibodeau) giving me that nine-second breather at the end of the half,” Dunleavy said with a laugh. “That made a big difference.” The Bulls won after trailing by 14 points in the first quarter. “They put us in a hole; we fought out of it,” Dunleavy said. “We just had to battle the whole game.” Since Jan. 1, Chicago is 12-1 when holding its opponent under 90 points. No other team in the league has kept as many opponents under 90 in that span. Teague had 26 points for the short-handed Hawks, who have lost nine of 10. Shelvin Mack scored 17. The Bulls led most of the second half but never pushed the advantage to double figures. “I think they really wanted that game today,” Noah said of the Hawks. “We really wanted that game, too. It wasnt pretty at times. Im just happy we were able to come out with the win.” DeMarre Carrolls fast-break basket gave Atlanta a 100-99 lead, but Dunleavy answered with a layup. With 1:03 remaining, Carroll sank a 3-pointer to give Atlanta a 103-101 lead. With 43.2 seconds remaining, officials reviewed and confirmed a questionable foul called on Carroll on Hinrichs 3-point attempt. Hinrich made the three free throws to put Chicago in front again. Noahs steal from Teague got the ball back for the Bulls with 20 seconds remaining. Atlantas Kyle Korver stole the inbounds pass, giving the Hawks a chance to take the lead, but Teague stepped out of bounds behind the basket. Hinrich then made two free throws. Noah stripped Mike Scott of the ball on Atlantas next possession, setting up another foul shot by Hinrich. Coach Mike Budenholzer and the Hawks argued that Noah fouled Scott. “Do I think he was fouled?” Budenholzer asked after the game. “I just looked at it, and yes I do.” Scott said Noah hit his arm but added “Cant do nothing about it now.” Budenholzer also protested Carrolls foul on Hinrich but said after watching the replay he agreed with that call. Hawks All-Star forward Paul Millsap missed his second straight game with a right knee contusion and also will be held out on Thursday at Boston. The Hawks also were without centres Pero Antic (stress fracture, right ankle) and Gustavo Ayon (right shoulder), who had filled in following Al Horfords season-ending torn pectoral muscle. Budenholzer said morale isnt a problem. “I thought our group competed at a very high level for 48 minutes tonight,” Budenholzer said. “Thats what were looking for, and thats what is most important to us.” Korver hit 3-pointers on Atlantas first two possessions, extending his NBA record to 125 straight games with a 3. Korver added a third trey a couple minutes later, and his strong start seemed to spark the Hawks, who jumped to a 26-12 lead. Chicago closed the deficit with a 13-2 run in the final minutes of the opening period and start of the second quarter. The Bulls led 54-51 at halftime. Mack sank a short jumper with about 2 seconds remaining in the third period. D.J. Augustin, who had 10 points, then banked in a half-court shot for Chicago, lifting the Bulls to an 80-75 lead heading to the final period. The IceHogs scored three unanswered goals, capped by Jeremy Morins third-period goal, to beat the Marlies 3-2 in American Hockey League play Wednesday.JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The captain was a few minutes late, though no one seemed to mind. Russell Wilson is usually worth the wait, and no more than on this day, his final one speaking about the game before he actually plays The Game. Peyton Manning is supposed to be the star of this Super Bowl, but a minor league second baseman who refused to listen to those who said he was too small to play quarterback in the NFL may have something to say about that. Proving people wrong is almost as fun for Wilson as winning football games, and hes done both with great regularity since being drafted with the 75th overall pick two years ago by the Seattle Seahawks. “For all the kids that have been told, no, that they cant do it, or all the kids that will be told no,” Wilson said. "Thats one of the reasons that I left playing baseball, to be honest with you. I had this urge to play the game of football, because so many people — I shouldnt say so many, a handful of people — said I couldnt do it. Richard Sherman will be the player most remembered from the win that got Seattle here. But if not for a gutsy play on an equally gutsy call, the Seahawks would not be in position to win their first Super Bowl title. Wilson found Jermaine Kearse in the end zone for the touchdown on a fourth down against San Francisco in the NFC championship game, giving the Seahawks the lead for the first time. It was the kind of play a veteran star like Manning might make when it counts most. The kind of play Wilson prepared for meticulously every day for the past two years. The kind of play that can win a Super Bowl. “I dont think Ive seen too many people have the knack to want be great. He wants to be a great quarterback,” receiver Percy Harvin said. “He just doesnt want to be average or All-Pro. He wants to be talked about as a great quarterback and I dont think hes going to stop until he does.” By now, Wilsons story is fairly well known. The son of the late Harrison Wilson III — a star athlete at Dartmouth who became a lawyer after briefly thinking of trying out for the NFL in 1977 — he lost a job as starting quarterback at North Carolina State while playing second base in the Colorado Rockies organization. Wilson would give up baseball to star as a graduate student at Wisconsin, leading the Badgers to the Big 10 title and a spot in the Rose Bowl. But he was undersized at 5-foot-11 and languished in the NFL draft before Pete Carroll and the Seahawks took a chance on him for what was expected to bee a backup quarterback position.dddddddddddd Instead, Carroll called him to the basketball court at the teams complex prior to his rookie season, where Wilson watched him shoot jumpers. "I go outside and he said, You want to shoot? " Wilson said. "Then he said, We want you to know youre going to be the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, hopefully for a long time. “That put a huge smile on my face. I immediately thought of my mom and dad and all the things theyve done for me and all the discipline they gave me.” That discipline is evident in the way Wilson approaches his job as both the quarterback and leader of his team. Like all quarterbacks he watches film, but Wilson is constantly studying situations and is relentless about fixing mistakes. “He makes everyone around him almost a perfectionist because we pick up off that and the habits that he has,” said receiver Ricardo Lockette. “He is always the first one there in the morning and the last one to leave.” Those habits helped propel the Seahawks to an 11-5 record last season behind their rookie QB. They beat the Washington Redskins in the first round of the playoffs, then lost a shootout to Atlanta that had Wilson down in the dumps — if only for a moment. By the time he was in the tunnel going back to the locker room he had already begun thinking what he had to do in the off-season to get the Seahawks over the hump this year. “I want to change the game and theres a difference between being good and being great and changing the game,” Wilson said. “Guys like Peyton Manning change the game in terms of the way he thinks and in terms of the way he processes things. Tom Brady is the same way, hes so clutch that people fear him. One day I want to evolve to that.” Wilson can take a big step in that direction should he join an elite group of quarterbacks (Brady, Kurt Warner and Ben Roethlisberger) who have won a Super Bowl in just their second year. Hes certainly not overwhelmed by the moment, and seems to embrace the challenge, even when it comes to answering the same questions over and over during the pregame buildup. A great believer in visualization, he already sees himself on the field at the Meadowlands, is already trying to figure out how to feel when the national anthem is sung and the stadium erupts in flashes for the kickoff. “Then it will be, OK, Im ready to go,” Wilson said. If he is, there may be more than one quarterback star in this Super Bowl. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

SEATTLE – When Richard Sherman gave Michael Crabtree a pat on the backside, got shoved in the face and made a choke sign toward the San Francisco bench, he was just getting warmed up. Get ready for two more weeks of the unfiltered Sherman with the Seattle Seahawks headed to the Super Bowl. “I hadnt gotten many opportunities all game and Im happy. Im happy about that,” Sherman said. " Im sure if our team knew it was going to come down to a play like that they would be pretty confident going into it." Sherman stole the attention on Sunday, first by deflecting a pass intended for Crabtree in the corner of the end zone with less than a minute left, right into the arms of Seattle teammate Malcolm Smith to seal the Seahawks 23-17 win. But then came the antics and Shermans words that revealed a deep dislike for Crabtree and satisfaction in Seattle knocking off its division rivals to reach the Super Bowl. While Smith was celebrating the interception, Sherman exchanged words with Crabtree, got shoved in the face as a rebuttal then made a choking gesture toward the San Francisco bench that he said was intended for quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Asked about the incident afterward by Fox reporter Erin Andrews, Sherman lit up Twitter with a rant that began: “Im the best corner in the game. When you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree, thats the result you gonna get. Dont you ever talk about me!” Sherman didnt back down even after getting some time to collect his thoughts. He apologized to Andrews, then proceeded to call Crabtree “mediocre,” making sure to annunciate each syllable of the word. “I was making sure everybody knew Crabtree was a mediocre receiver,” Sherman said. “And when you try the best corner in the game with a mediocre receiver thats what happens.” It was a fiery, emotional rant from Sherman, who celebrated his first conference title by racing around the field after Russell Wilson took the final knee, then leaping into the first row of seats in the south end zone to celebrate with fans. “I know how passionate he is about the game of football. He said to me before the game its going to come down to us making big plays. Weve got to do it. Somehow weve got to find a way to make big plays,” said teammate Doug Baldwin. “(Sherman) has been doing it all season. He is arguably the best cornerback in the NFL. They were trying to stay away from him the whole game. Eventually they were going to have to go his way and eventually they did and they made a mistake.” Sherman was rarely targeted by San Francisco, with most of the throws going toward Shermans teammate Byron Maxwell. But when Kaepernick had to make a throw in the final seconds, he decided to challenge the All-Pro. Sherman stayed with Crabtree, leaped and batted the ball into the air with his left hand. That allowed Smith to run underneath and make the interception that clinched the victory. It was San Franciscos third turnover in the fourth quarter. “I knew if I tipped it high enough someone would get there,” Sherman said. Sherman then ran over to Crabtree and gave him a pat on the backside, then appeared to extend his arm for a handshake. Instead, Sherman got shoved in the face before picking up his personal foul as his celebration continued. “Sherman made a good play. Thats probably the only play he made all game,” Crabtree said. “I aint getting into that, he knows what time it is. When were on the field, he aint doing nothin. Thats one play, you know what Im saying? … Hes a TV guy, Im not a TV guy. I play ball.” Sherman said his issues with Crabtree go back to something that happened during the off-season. He would not go into detail about what happened. “He said something personal face to face,” Sherman said. “He knows what he said and he knows Im going to be tough on him the rest of his career.” . LOUIS — St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford was very limited in practice, leaving his availability in doubt for Sundays game at San Francisco. “He didnt do much at all,” coach Steve Spagnuolo said. “Hes still a little sore, so well see where were at tomorrow.” Bradford aggravated a high left ankle sprain in last weeks loss to the Seahawks and didnt practise Thursday. Spagnuolo thought Bradford hadnt improved much since then. Bradford, who was listed as questionable, was not made available to reporters. Backup A.J. Feeley would make his third start if Bradford isnt able to go. One of Feeleys starts was the Rams best game of the year, a 31-21 victory over the New Orleans Saints. “It helps when you get reps in practice,” Feeley said. “But I fully anticipate Sam being ready to go.” The Rams re-signed quarterback Tom Brandstater to the practice squad as insurance, releasing linebacker Eddie Jones. Bradford didnt practise much leading up to the Arizona game in early November, but started in an overtime loss after missing two games with the injury. He had been listed as questionable. “Were going to make sure hes OK,” Spagnuolo said. “Its kind of like the Arizona game, we didnt play him until we knew he could get himself in and out of trouble.” Spagnuolo said Bradford was hurt making a throw, rather thhan getting the ankle rolled on by a tackler.dddddddddddd Wide receiver Danario Alexander (hamstring) has been practising all week, giving the Rams a potential deep threat. Alexander has missed five games. “Danario adds a little bit of a different element,” offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels said Thursday of the six-foot-five Alexander. “Hes got obviously a lot of size and length and has made some down-the-field plays for us that have really helped us.” Safety Darian Stewart (concussion) ruled himself out for this week, saying he didnt feel right, although the team has not made anything official and listed him as questionable. Spagnuolo said Stewart did a lot in practice Thursday but didnt feel well afterward. “Im not feeling normal,” Stewart said. “Just playing it safe.” Defensive end Chris Long (ankle) missed his second straight day of practice and also was questionable, but said Thursday it was “100 per cent” that hed play. Defensive tackle Justin Bannan (shoulder) was questionable. Punter Donnie Jones didnt test his sprained left ankle, saving it for game day. Jones was hurt when his cleats got caught in the turf trying to make a play on Patrick Petersons 80-yard punt return for touchdown last week, but made a couple of punts after that. PITTSBURGH — Jussi Jokinen enjoyed his four-plus seasons in Carolina and understood when the rebuilding Hurricanes sent him to Pittsburgh last spring as part of a salary dump. Imagine the damage he might have done on Tuesday night if he was angry. Jokinen poured in three goals for his first hat trick in nearly six years and the Penguins remained unbeaten with a 5-2 win. “Theres always extra motivation when you play against your former team,” Jokinen said. “I could have had five goals tonight. I hit the post and the crossbar too.” Not quite, but his hat trick was more than enough to push the Penguins to their best start since the 1994-95 team won its first seven games. “Its so much fun,” Jokinen said. “Im just trying to enjoy every moment and work. Im working hard in practice and games. Playing with (Evgeni Malkin) helps too, we have great chemistry.” It shows. Less than two minutes after Carolinas Nathan Gerbe tied the game at 2-all 3:13 into the third period, Jokinen put Pittsburgh in front to stay when he streaked down the left wing, took a pass from Malkin and threaded a wrist shot over the shoulder of Carolina goaltender Cam Ward. Ward responded with a flurry of brilliant saves during extended pressure by Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosbys line. Any momentum Wards gymnastics provided didnt last. Seconds after belly flopping to stop Pascal Dupuis on the doorstep, Ward failed to cover a loose puck off a face-off and Tanner Glass pounced on it to make it 4-2. Jokinen then finished off the Hurricanes with his second power-play goal of the night and first hat trick since he scored four for the Dallas Stars on Nov. 16, 2007. “Pittsburghs a good hockey team and theyre going to keep coming and they pressed and they didnt capitalize there, but they stayed with it and get that goal,” Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. “We would have liked to have used it to our advantage, not theirs, so it kind of backfired unfortunately.” Paul Martin also scored for Pittsburgh, while Crosby picked up his first two assists of the season. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 32 shots for the Penguins, who have not trailed through three games. Pittsburgh has outscored opponents 12-3 heading into a two-game road-swing through Florida starting Friday. “I think for us the biggest thing is our defensive play,” Glass said. “Were able to shut teams down and not give them too much.” Eric Staal also scored for the Hurricanes and Cam Ward made 32 saves, but Carolina crumbled in the final 15 minutes. “Everybody needed to be stronger tonight than they were,” Staal said. “We gave too much space for some of their skill players. You dont want to give time. You give time theyve got players who can make plays and they did that.” The Penguins brought in Jokinen last March, hoping the talented winger would help them lift the Stanley Cup. The Hurricanes even agreed to pay $900,000 of the $3 million Jokinen is due this year just to get him out of town. While Jokinen and Pittsburgh failed to win a championship, he showed an ability to blend in with Penguins stars Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and now has 10 goals in in 13 regular-season games since the trade. “Hes got an ability to play off players and read off them and it showed,” Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. “He was excellent.” The Penguins came in 0 for 3 on the season on the power play before breaking through 14:17 into the first period. With Carolinas Jay Harrison off for tripping, Pittsburgh took the lead when Crosby tried a centring pass that deflected off Staal and right to Jokinen, who collected the puck with his skate and kicked it to his stick. His backhand shot slid past Ward and put the Penguins in front. Pittsburgh made it 2-0 1:04 into the second when a sliding Martin took a Brooks Orpik shot off the end boards and threw it by a badly out of position Ward. Staal sliced the lead in half with an acrobatic deflection in which he managed to get his stick on Justin Faulks pass despite getting checked to the ice by Orpik. Carolinas surge pulled them even early in the third on Gerbes goal but the Hurricanes couldnt sustain it. NOTES: Penguins F James Neal missed his second straight game with an undisclosed injury. Neal aggravated a pre-existing problem during Pittsburghs season opener against New Jersey last week. Bylsma said Neal is more “week to week” than “day to day.” … Carolina plays at Washington on Thursday in the franchises 1,200th game since relocating from Hartford in 1997. SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Olivier Hanlan and Patrick Heckmann hit 3-pointers in overtime, Lonnie Jackson made four straight free throws in the final 26.2 seconds, and lowly Boston College stunned top-ranked Syracuse 62-59 on Wednesday night, ending the Oranges unbeaten season. “It was an emotional game for us,” BC coach Steve Donahue said after his first Carrier Dome win in eight tries against the Orange. “Its been incredible for these guys to persevere. Weve played well in a lot of games.” The Eagles came to town with heavy hearts and a good dose of determination. Longtime basketball media contact and sports information assistant Dick Kelley died last week after a two-year battle with ALS. His funeral was Tuesday and the Eagles, who often visited his apartment, were wearing “DK” patches on their uniforms. “The patch on our chests, toward the end of the game it was like, We cant be denied. DK is looking down on us. Hes got us,” said Ryan Anderson. “Its real emotional. Its really going to set in in a couple of hours.” Boston College (7-19, 3-10 Atlantic Coast Conference), which had lost five straight, rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit to pull off the improbable upset. Syracuse (25-1, 12-1) travels to No. 5 Duke on Saturday night for a rematch of their overtime instant classic on Feb. 1. The loss leaves No. 3 Wichita State (28-0), which beat Loyola of Chicago 88-74 on Wednesday night, as the lone unbeaten in Division I. The Eagles, whose only conference wins this season were over Virginia Tech, beat a No. 1-ranked team for the third time and first since knocking off then-No. 1 North Carolina in 2009. Syracuse, which had won its last two games by a combined three points, shot a season-low 32.2 per cent from the field including going 2 of 12 from 3-point range, its sputtering offence unable to pull off another miracle finish. “When you get in enough of these games, theres going to be one youre not going to make a play. Thats what happens,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "At the end of games, you get into enough of these games, youre not going to win. “Im really happy that weve won 25 games,” Boeheim said. “We cant think about that. Weve got to think about what we have to going forward. Weve really got to get better, and I think we will. Its been an unbelievable run, Ive never seen anything like it before. Its remarkable what theyve done.” Tied at 50 after two halves played at Boston Colleges deliberate pace, Hanlan and Heckmann hit from long range to give BC a 56-52 lead with 2:56 left, but Tyler Ennis driving layup knotted the score at 56 with 2:09 to play. A free throw by Ennis, from Brampton, Ont., gave the Orange a one-point lead, but Heckmanns backdoor layup put the Eagles back in front with 43.5 seconds left. After a timeout, Ennis threw a pass toward C.J. Fair in the right corner that sailed out of bounds. After the officials initially ruled it was Syracuses ball a video review with 32.dddddddddddd seconds left re-affirmed the call. It didnt matter when Fair missed a drive and Jackson sealed the victory with his clutch free throws. Hanlan finished with 20 points and Jackson had 10. Anderson had nine points and 14 rebounds, but the Eagles won it by going 11 of 22 from behind the arc. They committed 15 turnovers, three after halftime. Fair finished with 20 points on 7-of-23 shooting and had 11 rebounds. Ennis had 14 points and six assists and Jerami Grant finished with 11 points. Syracuse won 58-56 at Pittsburgh a week ago and 56-55 over North Carolina State in the Carrier Dome on Saturday night — as the Orange had walked a tightrope much of the season. Grants spinning layup on a drive through the lane gave Syracuse a 50-48 lead with 77 seconds left in regulation, but Hanlan tied it with a layup 30 seconds later. After a timeout, Ennis missed a layup attempt but snared his own rebound and Boeheim called a timeout with 20 seconds left to set up a final shot. But Rakeem Christmas missed a hook in the lane just before the buzzer to force overtime. BC was called for two shot-clock violations in the final 5 minutes, squandering a chance to win it in regulation. BC figured to attack the Syracuse zone inside-out with Jackson leading the ACC in shooting at 50 per cent (34 of 68) from behind the arc and Joe Rahon and Hanlan each with 21 3-pointers. Eddie Odio averaging 42.4 per cent from long range, also started. BC trailed by eight points at halftime and by as many 13 in the second half before its outside game came alive. Hanlan hit three from behind the arc and Rahon had two in a 7-minute span to key a 21-8 spurt, and Andersons layup tied it at 41-all with 8:15 left. A 3 by Rahon from the left corner made it 46-42 with 6:09 to go. Syracuse tied it at 46 on Ennis driving layup with 5:09 left, but he committed a turnover on the ensuing possession and Heckmanns layup put BC back in front 48-46 at 3:30. The Orange tied it at 48 on a free throw by Christmas with 2:23 to play. Syracuse started badly, missing its first seven shots and falling behind 7-2 as Jackson drained two 3s in the first 5 minutes. Fair notched the Oranges first basket on a reverse layup at 14:19. Fair, Syracuses leading scorer, had eight of the Oranges first 12 points, but half those points were on free throws as he missed eight of his first 10 shots. Syracuse shot 34.5 per cent (10 of 29) and missed all six attempts from long range in the first half. Grants three-point play gave Syracuse a 25-17 lead at halftime as the Orange held Boston Colleges top scorers in check. Hanlan was 1 of 5 from the field and Anderson 1 of 4. The Orange boosted the lead to 33-20 on Ennis 3 from the wing with 17:25 left. Syracuse won at Boston College a little more than a month ago. The Orange trailed 51-46 with just over 10 minutes to play, then took advantage of their size inside during a 16-1 run over a span of less than 4 minutes and won 69-59. As much as seven prospects with Canadian connections could find their way onto an NFL team come draft time. Canadians Brent Urban and Bo Lokombo appear to be locks to have their name called on Draft weekend while Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, a CIS offensive lineman, could also be drafted. John Urschel and T.J. Jones are Americans born in Canada that should be drafted as well while Hunter Steward and Casey Chin could earn UDFA contracts after the draft. Go to TSN.ca for the full list of Canadian prospects. Next up is the Montreal Canadiens – Canadas top franchise last season with a lot of pressure to improve on last springs playoff success. Catch up on their off-season moves and the issues they face this season, as well as their analytical breakdown by TSNs Scott Cullen. Division: Atlantic GM: Marc Bergevin Head Coach: Michel Therrien 2013-14: 46-28-8 (3rd in Atlantic) Playoffs: Lost in Eastern Conference Final Goals For: 209 (21st) Goals Against: 201 (8th) PP: 17.2% (19th) PK: 85.1% (4th) That Was Then: After a 2012-13 season that saw the Canadiens capture the division title and qualify for the post-season, most of the Montreal faithful were happy with their turnaround from a last place finish in the Eastern Conference basement a year earlier. Not Marc Bergevin. “There were a many positives from last year,” he told his players flatly prior to last seasons training camp. “We made the playoffs but lost in the first-round (to Ottawa). We cant be satisfied with that.” The Canadiens struggled in the first quarter of the season, with a 10-9-2 record and slow starts from two of their top forwards. David Desharnais, with just one assist in his first 17 games, was chastised on social media by Montreal mayor Denis Coderre – who called for his demotion to Hamilton of the American Hockey League. Max Pacioretty, who was also struggling on the score sheet, was suddenly the subject of trade speculation. All of that came to a head on Nov. 19, when Pacioretty scored a natural hat trick and Desharnais notched two assists in the Habs 6-2 win over the Minnesota Wild. That victory put the Canadiens top scoring duo back on track, as well as kickstart a 9-0-1 run through Dec. 7. The rest of December and January werent particularly kind, headlined by a listless 5-0 home loss to Washington on Jan. 25 that saw the club booed mercilessly at the Bell Centre. Cue Bergevin, who saw it all first-hand and had all of his players stay in the dressing room to address the media after the game. That subtle (or not-so-subtle depending what he said to his players) reminder of accountability worked as the Habs recovered quickly and went 5-1-1 into the Olympic break. Going into the NHLs 3pm et trade deadline on Mar. 3, things looked very quiet from the front office. The team had already acquired depth players in forward Dale Weise and defenceman Mike Weaver and appeared to be standing pat. That is, until 2:59pm et when news broke that the Canadiens – who werent even rumoured to be in the running – acquired arguably the biggest name of the day in sniper Thomas Vanek. The Austrian winger, who settled in on a line with Desharnais and Pacioretty, gave the Canadiens that added offensive punch they needed to make the post-season. Which brings us to Mar. 15 and a nationally televised Saturday night game at home against Ottawa. Down 4-1 late in the third period, the Canadiens – in an NHL first – stunned the Senators with three unanswered goals in the final three-and-a-half minutes of play en route to an incredible 5-4 overtime win. As Therrien and Bergevin later admitted, that victory turned their season around and gave them the momentum to clinch a post-season berth with an 11-3-1 finish in their final 15 games. What happened in the playoffs was beyond just about everyones expectations, as the Canadiens knocked off the Tampa Bay Lightning and hated Boston Bruins before losing out in six games to the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference Final. Just two wins shy of their first Stanley Cup Final since 1993, it will be difficult for Bergevin and Therrien to temper expectations after the Habs best post-season showing of this generation. Games 21-41: Percentages closer to average, possession falls, but record strong thanks to four OT/SO wins. Games 42-62: Top-shelf goaltending and improved finish kept Habs rolling, despite subpar possession stats. Games 63-82: Addition of Thomas Vanek helped elevate shooting percentage. On July 1, the Canadiens added faceoff specialist Manny Malhotra, who should take some of the defensive zone responsibilities off two-way centres Tomas Plekanec and Lars Eller. Free agent defenceman Tom Gilbert was also brought in, providing power play help and a valuable right-handed shot behind Andrei Markov and P.K. Subban. Markov appears to be a career Canadien after signing a new three-year contract prior to July 1, while Subban – much to the delight of Canadiens fans – signed an eight-year, $72 million contract. Giontas absence leaves the Canadiens with two roles to fill – a stable second/third line right winger and a leader in the dressing room. Parenteau believes he can take the role on the second line, while free agent signing Jiri Sekac will also get a look. Where the leadership element is concerned, Giontas (and Gorges) departure means the torch will be passed to a core headlined by younger players like Pacioretty, Subban and Brendan Gallagher. Fantasy – Cullens Player to Watch Alex Galchenyuk The third overall pick in 2012 has shown flashes of talent in two pro campaigns, but struggled during his sophomore season, particularly after missing time with a broken hand, scoring three goals and eight points in 21 games after returning from the injury. Nevertheless, the 20-year-old has the size and skill to be a difference maker for the Habs, provided he is utilized in a sufficiently prominent offensive role. Through his first two years, there have been some ups and down when it comes to ice time, as Galchenyuk has averaged 13:30 per game over his first 113 NHL games, but if he stays healthy, and plays a top-six role this season, Galchenyuk could be poised for a breakthrough season.
