Téma: Jak postupovat / national teams ATLANTA — Another strong outing from Julio Teheran. Another clutch hit by Evan Gattis. It added up to another win for the Atlanta Braves. Gattis hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning after Teheran threw seven strong innings, leading the Braves past the Miami Marlins 4-2 on Monday night. Dan Uggla led off with a single up the middle off Arquimedes Caminero (0-1). Gattis followed with a shot into the left-field seats for his fifth homer of the season — and first career walkoff homer, though he had numerous big hits his rookie year. “It feels good,” Gattis said. “It feels different when you hit one and know the game is over.” Coming off his first career complete game, Teheran turned in another stellar performance by Atlantas rotation, allowing only one run and five hits before he was lifted for a pinch-hitter. He actually lowered the cumulative ERA for Atlantas starters, already the best in the majors, from 1.54 to 1.52. “Were just trying to keep our team in the game,” Teheran said. “Were doing a great job.” Andrelton Simmons also homered for the Braves, and Jason Heyward put Atlanta up 2-1 with a seventh-inning single off Mike Dunn — only Heywards second hit in 19 at-bats off a left-hander. Craig Kimbrel failed to hold the lead, a second straight shaky outing for the closer who was yanked in his previous appearance when he couldnt get three outs in a non-save situation against the Mets. This time, Gattis contributed to the troubles — called for catcher interference when a swing ticked his glove — before pinch-hitter Derek Dietrich lined one off the wall in left-centre for a game-tying double. But, with runners at second and third and no outs, Kimbrel struck out the side to keep the game 2-2. “I didnt do my job, but we came back to win the game,” he said. “If we lose the game, it hurts a lot more.” Anthony Varvaro (1-0) worked a scoreless inning for the win, first-place Atlantas eighth in the last 10 games. Garrett Jones homered leading off the second for Miamis first run, just the ninth homer surrendered by the Braves. Miami should have scored two runs on Deitrichs double, but pinch-runner Reed Johnson went back to tag at second base on a drive the Braves had no chance of catching. That caused Adeiny Hechevarria, running all the way from first, to slow up so he didnt pass Johnson. Hechevarria was held at third and never got any farther. “I feel terrible,” Johnson said. “Thats the game right there.” Miami also squandered a chance in the eighth after Uggla botched a potential inning-ending double play. Second-base umpire Marvin Hudson initially called the runner out, ruling that Uggla caught the ball but dropped it attempting to make the relay throw to first. Marlins manager Mike Redmond challenged. After a delay of nearly 5 minutes, the call finally came down from the replay centre: all runners safe. The video showed Uggla making the catch, but losing control as he grabbed the ball with his right hand |

Téma: Jak postupovat / hirts in temperatures t (Sports Network) – The Winnipeg Jets will be looking for their first three game win-streak since Dec. 27-31 when they take on a well-rested Pittsburgh Penguins team at Consol Energy Center on Saturday. Winnipeg, which is three points behind Washington and Florida for first place in the Southeast, used a late comeback to shock the Capitals Thursday in D.C. and will try to build off that dramatic win this afternoon. Bryan Little eventually scored the game-winner in the shootout in the 3-2 decision for the Jets, but that was after Winnipeg rallied from two goals down in the closing minutes of regulation. Trailing 2-0 with less than three minutes to play, Winnipeg got goals from Evander Kane and Dustin Byfuglien in a span of 12 seconds to force overtime. The tying goal was nothing short of a fluke, as Byfuglien slapped a shot from center ice, which deflected off a Washington defender and awkwardly skipped over the shoulder of Caps goaltender Tomas Vokoun. “We didnt really quit,” said Byfuglien. “We stuck with it and we battled.” Thursdays comeback win improved Winnipegs weak road record to 10-16-4 this season. After today, the Jets will play nine of their next 10 games at home, where they are 16-8-2. The well-rested Penguins meanwhile hope a three-game homestand and the return of Jordan Staal can get them back on track today as theyll try to avoid losing for the fourth time in five games. The Penguins closed last month on a season-high eight-game winning streak, but they opened February with a 1-2-1 road trip. The club is now back home for three straight in the Steel City, where Pittsburgh has won four straight and is 15-7-2 this season. Pittsburghs recent lull has allowed New Jersey to move a point ahead of the Pens for third place in the Atlantic Division and the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. With Sidney Crosby still sidelined with his head and neck issues, the Penguins should be excited to get Staal back today for the first time since he suffered a knee injury back on Jan. 6. The centerman has 15 goals and six assists in 34 games this year and is one of Pittsburghs best two-way forwards. “I expect him to be used significantly in the game,” Pens head coach Dan Bylsma told his teams web site about Staals availability for today. “Maybe not quite totally to the 20-minute mark, but 15-plus minutes and on the second power play. Probably not 100 percent on the penalty kill. That may be a spot where other players may go in front of him where he normally would assume their ice time.” The Penguins last played on Tuesday in Montreal. The Canadiens posted a 3-2 win over Pittsburgh after Tomas Plekanec scored in the eighth round of the shootout. In the decisive round, Plekanec beat Marc-Andre Fleury to the glove side with a wrister and Carey Price sealed the win as he kept out a low forehand shot from Jason Williams. Pascal Dupuis and James Neal scored for the Penguins, while Fleury posted 28 stops in the loss. Pittsburgh erased a pair of one-goal deficits in the third period to grab a point. The Pens have won five of six and 13 of the last 15 encounters with the Winnipeg/Atlanta franchise. Tonight marks the Jets first trip to Pittsburgh since the club made the move to Manitoba in the offseason. The Thrashers had lost their last nine tests in the Steel City. Louis Cardinals have agreed on a four-year contract, giving the All-Star a fresh start after his Biogenesis drug suspension last summer.Anybody worried about how Bruno Mars would do on one of the worlds largest stages had obviously never seen the young star perform live. That all changed Sunday night when tens of millions got their first chance to see why hes one of the most exciting live acts of his generation. Mars, 28, took his high-powered live show to Super Bowl halftime, creating what felt like an intimate show in the arena in East Rutherford, N.J., and supersizing it in what has become a defining moment for those who preceded him on the list of halftime performers in the big game. The Grammy Award-winning singer eliminated any doubters from the second he appeared on screen in a skinny tie and gold jacket almost as dazzling as his smile. He played a deep-groove drum solo while rolling across the field on a raised, motorized platform, then joined his smoking-hot live band for a series of energetically executed hits that were clearly not lip-synced. He then seamlessly integrated the Red Hot Chili Peppers into his set. “There were a lot of doubters and my man delivered,” Fox commentator Howie Long said after the performance. Hard to disagree. There were no flubs, no negative moments that will live on at the water cooler Monday morning. And while you can argue about the entertainment value of watching shirtless Chili Peppers gambol about the stage, the 50-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famers managed to match Mars energy in a brief appearance that was no less memorable. Mars trades in shared memories, taking the best of acts that have come before like the infectiousness of Sting and The Police, or the groove of James Brown, and updatting them with lyrics and sounds that capture the freshness of the current moment.dddddddddddd He opened by displaying the beauty of his high tenor with the sing-a-long-inviting “Locked Out of Heaven” and “Treasure” before transitioning to “Runaway Baby.” That song, with its Brown-flavoured beat, allowed the Hawaiian-born singer to dance in homage to “Soul Brother Number One,” complete with an impressive gymnastics-style split as part of his moves. He broke down the band to silence and killed the lights for a moment, allowing the crowds screams to be heard at home, before transitioning to the Chili Peppers and the funky “Give It Away.” The Chili Peppers, which included singer Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea sans shirts in temperatures that hovered in the 40s, powered through the song, then joined Mars and his Hooligans in a quick few bars from Black Sabbath. Mars and his eight-piece band, The Hooligans, were dressed from head-to-toe in custom-made clothes from Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane. Fox cut to video segments of soldiers around the world dedicating the next song to loved ones before going back to Mars. He appeared alone on a small stage in the centre of the field where he sang the ballad “Just the Way You Are” with the stands full of lights and the sky aflame with the biggest fireworks display in NFL Super Bowl history. It was a powerful moment and compared favourably to past performances by stars like Prince and Bruce Springsteen. There was never a dull moment. Thats about all you can ask, especially in a game that was full of them. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / inally, it was three OWINGS MILLS, Md. — When it came down to it, Jacoby Jones decided he just wanted to stay with the Baltimore Ravens. The 29-year old wide receiver signed a four-year contract with the Ravens Thursday after agreeing to terms on the contract Wednesday. “I wasnt even thinking about the money,” Jones said. “Its the fact that this is probably the only place that will let me be myself.” He later joked, “The city, the state, the organization, the coaches, they know I kind of dont have it all together up here, up top — some loose ends — and they all accept that.” The former “Dancing with the Stars” participant was in the midst of a meeting with the New York Giants Wednesday when he made the decision that he wanted to return to the Ravens. After meeting with the Giants, Jones got in a car to head downtown and meet New York executives for dinner. During that car ride, Jones said he told the driver to head to the airport, that he wanted to come back to Baltimore. Jones agreed to terms with the Ravens later in the day. “Couldnt be more excited,” coach John Harbaugh said. “Once again, we keep adding our guys on our offence. Our offence is getting better by maintaining the guys that we have here right now.” Jones is the third offensive player to re-sign with Baltimore since Feb. 28, joining tight end Dennis Pitta and left tackle Eugene Monroe. Jones signed with the Ravens in 2012 after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Houston Texans. With Baltimore, he has been a weapon on special teams. He has five returns for touchdowns the last two years, including a 108-yard return for a touchdown in Super Bowl XLVII. But he also started nine games at wide receiver in 2013, and Harbaugh envisions him continuing to play a role on offence going forward. The Ravens hired Gary Kubiak in January to be their offensive co-ordinator. Kubiak was Jones coach in Houston during his time there. “Its just a great opportunity for us,” Harbaugh said. "Jacoby is a playmaker, but hes not just a playmaker. I think everybody understands what he brings to the table in terms of ability to break open a game at any time, but hes also a quality receiver. “Hes a special teams player, but hes also a guy that can do the things that you need to do to move the chains when you need to move them. . His boss interrupted him in midsentence. “He should have won the Gold Glove,” Cleveland Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said. Brantleys response matched his “Dr. Smooth” nickname. He kept right on going, talking about everyone except himself. “Its about winning baseball games,” Brantley said. His devotion to that answer helped him get a $25 million, four-year contract on Thursday as the Indians opened spring training. A player who was the last piece in the deal for pitcher CC Sabathia in 2008 is now recognized as one of the Indians core players. Brantley batted a team-leading .284 last season, when Cleveland ended a five-year playoff drought. The Indians lost to Tampa Bay 4-0 in the wild-card game. The challenge is to keep getting better. The Indians decided that the 26-year-old can be instrumental that way. He avoided arbitration by agreeing to the deal, which he signed after passing a physical. Brantley gets a $3.5 million signing bonus and salaries of $1.5 million this year, $5 million in 2015, $6.5 million in 2016 and $7.5 million in 2017. Cleveland has an $11.5 million option for 2018 with a $1 million buyout. His 2017 salary would increase by $1 million if hes among the top five in MVP voting in any year from 2014-16 and would go up by $500,000 if he finishes sixth to 10th. The option price would be boosted by $1 million if hes among the top five from 2014-17 and by $500,000 if he finishes sixth to 10th. “He is a complete player,” Antonetti said. "He is a tireless worker, a great teammate, a complete professional in every sense of the word. When youre making investments of this magnitude, those are the things you look for. He embodies everything we look for in our players. “His entire focus is on the team. A lot of guys talk about that and will give the surface, Hey, Im a team pplayer.dddddddddddd. Michael lives that every day.” He proved it last season. Brantley was slotted as the leadoff hitter and centre fielder until the Indians signed Michael Bourn. He agreed to move to left field and floated around in the batting order, hitting everywhere from first through eighth as manager Terry Francona rested regulars. Brantley set career highs with 26 doubles, 10 homers, 73 RBIs and 66 runs. He also stole 17 bases in 21 attempts. And he went the entire season without making an error in his new outfield spot. “Those are the players that you value because regardless of what their personal goals are or their aspirations, theyre able to put the team goals ahead of it,” Francona said. "And thats a good example. We all know he wanted to play centre field, and he moved to left. And he probably preferred to stay in one spot in the order, but he moved around. “And he did it willingly.” Brantley was part of a four-player package that the Indians got from Milwaukee on July 7, 2008. Originally, it was three players and one to be announced after the season. Brantley heard that he would be the final piece in the deal, which was completed on Oct. 3. Little did the Indians know he would end up being the biggest prize in the package, which included first baseman Matt LaPorta. “In bringing Michael over, we had some sense of those things,” Antonetti said. “But Im not sure we could fully appreciate how great of a worker he was, how great of a teammate he was, how driven he was to be successful.” Notes: Francona isnt sure where Brantley will bat this season, but said its possible he could move around in the order again. … The Indians were prepared for an arbitration hearing Friday with RHP Josh Tomlin, who is asking for $975,000. The team has offered $800,000. RHP Justin Masterson also has an arbitration hearing pending. He is seeking $11.8 million, while the club offered $8.05 million. Vogel still believes Indiana can get there without overhauling the roster. The Pacers have already answered one key question: Vogel will return as coach. When asked if his appearance Monday was indicative he would be back next season, Vogel simply said: “Yes.” Now comes the hard part. Téma: Jak postupovat / e first half and failed t EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Josh Freemans career keeps spiraling. The New York Giants released the quarterback Freeman on Friday, five weeks after signing him. Freemans stock has plummeted since the beginning of last season, when he was Tampa Bays starting quarterback. He was benched and then cut by the Buccaneers, signed with Minnesota and started one game. That was in a lopsided loss to the Giants when he appeared unprepared for the assignment, going 20 of 53 for 190 yards with an interception. New York signed him as its 15th veteran free agent in the off-season, adding Freeman to the roster in part because starting quarterback Eli Manning and backup Curtis Painter had undergone surgery. But Manning was back at practice this week, Painter is expected back before training camp, and second-year QB Ryan Nassib will get a long look for the second-string job behind Manning. So Freeman was expendable, and his work in recent organized team activities was not impressive enough for the Giants to keep him. Freemans quarterbacks coach in Minnesota was Craig Johnson, now the Giants running backs coach. Freeman went 0-3 as a starter in 2013 with the Buccaneers before being cut on Oct. 3. He signed with the Vikings five days later, but other than his start against the Giants, he was a nonfactor in Minnesota. He was the Buccaneers first-round draft pick in 2009 out of Kansas State. He became a starter in November of that year and started 60 games for Tampa Bay. The Giants also were awarded offensive lineman Rogers Gaines off waivers from the Bears. Gaines, 6-foot-6 and 334 pounds, entered the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in May 2013. He played in all four preseason games for Baltimore last summer but was waived on Aug. 30. Gaines signed on with Chicagos practice squad on Sept. 24 and spent the rest of the season there. PETERSBURG, Russia — Zenit had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday after the Russian sides striker Hulk missed a penalty against his former club. Lucho Gonzalez gave Porto the lead by heading in Danilos perfect cross from the right after 23 minutes. Zenit equalized five minutes later when Hulk took advantage of a mix-up in the Portuguese defence. The former Porto forward pounced on Roman Shirokovs pass to stroll past defender Alex Sandro and goalkeeper Helton before prodding the ball into an empty net. Though Porto side dominated the first half, Zenit improved after the break and Hulk missed his chance to score a second when Helton saved the Brazilians low penalty in the 52nd minute following a handball by Nicolas Otamendi. The draw kept Zenit second in Group G, behind Atletico Madrid but a point ahead of Porto. “Porto played better in the first half but in the second half, we dominated and should have scored to win the match,” Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti said. “Nothing is yet decided in our group. If we play the remaining matches the way we played in the second half, we can beat any opponent and advance to the next round.” Porto enjoyed all the possession from kickoff, with defender Danilo testing keeper Yuri Lodygin in the seventh minute. Jackson Martinez sent an effort wide 10 minutes later — after Aksel Witsel had fired high the home sides first chance in the game. Hulk then had his first shot on goal as the home side struggled to find its game and relied on counter attacks. Danilo broke down the right flank to set up the visitors deserved lead, with Gonzalezs downward header giving the keeper no chance. Spalletti was forced to make an early substitution by sending on striker Alexander Kerzhakov for the injured Danny.dddddddddddd Kerzhakov duly started the attack that led to the equalizer, with Hulk racing through while Portos defence dithered over which of them should clear Shirokovs pass. However, Zenit turned the game its way in the second half, playing more aggressively and constantly threatening the Porto defence. Oleg Shatov missed the target in the 50th before Hulk failed to beat Helton from the penalty spot, while Lodygin blocked Eliaquim Mangalas header at the other end in the 59th minute. Former Arsenal midfielder Andrei Arshavin came on for Shirokov in the 67th and helped to lead Zenits attacks. Helton dived to save Arshavins low shot the 73rd. “I really liked the way I ran today,” Arshavin said. “We really played badly in the first half and failed to find our game. If Hulk had scored the penalty, we could have definitely won. Porto looked more tired in the second half while we found our game.” Hulk had one last chance to score the winner but his curling free kick from 26 metres was easily blocked by Helton three minutes into stoppage time. Zenit will next host Atletico Madrid on Nov. 26, while Porto will be at home to face Austria Vienna. Qualifying for the knockout stages is clearly possible for Porto, but is more difficult now for the 2004 Champions League winners. “We could have won and there were chances to do that, especially in the first half,” Porto coach Paulo Fonseca said. "In the second, Zenit improved and showed what theyre capable of. “Zenit have one more point and they have the advantage. Now we have to win two matches and wait for our rivals to slip up.” Atletico was playing Austria Vienna later on Wednesday. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / er, when Kansas Citys Derr TORONTO — Hockey Canadas Bob Nicholson figures its too early to worry about whether an injury clause could be used on Steven Stamkos for the Olympics. But its not too early for the management staff to consider potential alternatives if a broken right tibia keeps Stamkos from playing in Sochi. “Youre never replacing Steve Stamkos,” said Nicholson, Hockey Canadas president and CEO. “We have a lot of great players. Steve Yzerman has a very difficult job putting this team together, but you dont replace Steve Stamkos and well just have to find another way to make sure the lineups strong.” The Tampa Bay Lightning star was tied for the NHL lead in goals and assists and was considered a lock for the Canadian Olympic team. It also wasnt out of the realm of possibility that Stamkos couldve been on right wing alongside Pittsburgh superstar Sidney Crosby. After Canada struggled to score goals on the bigger, international-sized ice in Turin in 2006, pure scorers are likely to be a major priority. Through more than a month of the NHL season, no one fits that bill more than Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks and Matt Duchene of the Colorado Avalanche. Its possible Perry and Duchene, who each scored 11 goals through Mondays games, would ride their strong starts to spots on the team regardless of Stamkoss status, but theyre certainly in better shape now. Yzerman and coach Mike Babcock want to break up Perry and Ryan Getzlaf, so the Ducks winger could be ticketed to play with Crosby. Marty St. Louis, who won the Art Ross Trophy last season for Yzermans Lightning, also might get a chance with the Pittsburgh Penguins captain. The players stocks who could rise the most in the aftermath of the Stamkos injury are two who werent in Calgary for Olympic orientation camp in August: Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers and Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars. Giroux elected not to go while rehabbing a hand injury, while Benn was not invited. Girouxs horrid start put him in a bad spot, but the need for a centre who can play right wing gives him a chance for redemption. He scored his first goal Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers, which could be just the spark he needs. Benn is a centre-turned-left-winger, but the flexibility of players like Patrick Sharp of the Chicago Blackhawks could help him get on the roster and let the lines shake out later. The suit was filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. Téma: Jak postupovat / als provi Mike Babcock wont bend to the pressure that befalls the Canadian mens Olympic hockey team. He wont bend to outlandish questions either. The Detroit Red Wings bench boss is two practices deep with his squad and is already being bombarded — as expected — with a wide array of questions. Speaking to reporters after practice Tuesday, Babcock was candid yet focused on the task at hand. “You feel pressure because its the pressure you put on yourselves to perform,” he said. “We take our job seriously. We like to brag as a nation that we are the best in the world in hockey, but you cant just brag, (you) need to win and back it up” Its no secret that there is pressure on Canada, not only to defend a gold medal, but also to stand behind a reputation as the centre of the hockey world. And while Babcock may worry about the high level of competition at the Olympics, he refused to worry about a question of whether it was safe to room all three goalies together in Sochi in case one of them gets sick. “You guys (reporters) spend way too much time thinking about this stuff ,” he said. “Its rare you put three goalies together in one room? Well its rare you put any three of anyone together because we all get our own room in the NHL.” . Cooper said the last few days have been incredibly difficult and he will step away to seek counselling. “My actions were inexcusable,” he said. “The more I think about what I did, the more disgusted I get. I keep trying to figure out how I could have said something so repulsive, and what I can do to make things better.” Cooper apologized profusely Wednesday after a video of him using the N-word at a Kenny Chesney concert last month surfaced on the Internet. The Eagles immediately fined him. “Right now, I think its important for me to take some time to reflect on this situation,” Cooper said. “The organization and my teammates have been extremely supportive, but I also realize that there are people who will have a tough time forgiving me for what Ive done. The best thing for me, and for the team, is to step away for a period of time.” The Eaagles did not set a timetable for Coopers return.dddddddddddd “He will meet with professionals provided by the Eagles during this period of time to better help him understand how his words have hurt so many, including his teammates,” the team said in a statement. Cooper spoke to the media again after practice Thursday, telling them his meeting with teammates a night earlier was “extremely emotional.” Teammates Michael Vick, Jason Avant and others expressed forgiveness for Cooper. LeSean McCoy also said he forgives Cooper, but “I cant really respect somebody like that.” Cooper, who grew up in Clearwater, Fla., was selected in the fifth round of the 2010 draft by the Eagles out of the University of Florida. He has just 46 catches and five touchdowns in three years with the Eagles, but has been practicing with the starters since Jeremy Maclins season-ending injury last week. “As long as it takes, and whatever I have to do, Im going to try to make this right,” Cooper said. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ality show "The T.O. Show NEW YORK — The latest buzzer-beater at the Big East tournament belongs to a Seton Hall reserve with a familiar last name. Sterling Gibbs hit a step-back jumper as time expired and Seton Hall stunned No. 3 Villanova 64-63 in a thrilling quarter-final Thursday, a loss that could cost the Wildcats a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. “Were really confident, honestly, especially after you beat the No. 3 team in the country,” said Gibbs, a sophomore transfer from Texas whose brother was a Pittsburgh star. “We know if we can beat them, we can beat anyone. So were just up for the challenge.” Eugene Teague had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the eighth-seeded Pirates (17-16), who advanced to the tournament semifinals for the first time in 13 years. They will play Friday night against No. 4 seed Providence, which held off fifth-seeded St. Johns 79-74. Josh Hart scored 18 to lead the top-seeded Wildcats (28-4), beaten only twice in 18 regular-season conference games while winning their first outright Big East title since 1982. Both losses were blowouts by Doug McDermott and Creighton. “Youve all heard me say this before: This was not about 1 seeds, 2 seeds. This was about we wanted to come to Madison Square Garden and win the Big East tournament. Winning the Big East tournament would mean much more to us than a 1 seed,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “The NCAA tournament seedings, my belief is 1, 2, 3, it doesnt matter that much. Youre going to play great teams.” Patrik Auda scored all 13 of his points in the first half for Seton Hall, a 10 1/2-point underdog. But the pesky Pirates, accustomed to playing close games, built a 15-point lead and recovered after Villanova spurted past them with a 16-0 run in the second half. It was Seton Halls first victory in five tries against top-seeded teams at the Big East tournament. “We never really got rattled,” coach Kevin Willard said. “These guys have a lot of heart. They have a lot of character, and they deserve to win.” Villanova took a 63-62 lead on Darrun Hilliards floater in the lane with 7.8 seconds to go. Seton Hall pushed the ball past halfcourt, then called timeout with 3.7 seconds left. With much of the crowd on its feet, Jaren Sina inbounded and Gibbs backed off Hilliard with a hard step back, draining a 17-foot jumper from the top of the key just as the horn sounded. “We usually dont like to call timeouts. We usually like just to go. But I wanted the ball, at that time, in Sterlings hands,” Willard said. A fired-up Gibbs, who finished with 10 points, jumped onto the scorers table and looked up at the crowd as excited teammates ran all over the court in a wild celebration. The shot was a near carbon copy of the one Kemba Walker hit three years ago at the Garden during Connecticuts captivating run to Big East and NCAA tournament championships. That buzzer-beating jumper by Walker, also in the quarterfinals, beat a top-seeded Pittsburgh team that was led by Gibbs brother, Ashton. “It ended up being a little bit of a scramble. The plan kind of got switched up a little bit,” Sterling Gibbs said before Teague interrupted. “A little bit?” said the senior centre. “Yeah, a lot of bit,” Gibbs acknowledged. “In the end, it was supposed to get in my hands and I was supposed to create a shot for my teammates or create a shot for myself, and I just stepped back and hit the jumper.” Hilliard scored all 11 of his points in the second half. JayVaughn Pinkston also had 11 for the Wildcats, but the 77 per cent free throw shooter was 3 of 10 at the foul line as the Wildcats went 15 for 25 (60 per cent) to Seton Halls 6-for-9 mark. The Pirates limited Villanova to 37.9 per cent shooting and 21.1 per cent from 3-point range (4 for 19), less than 18 hours after holding Butler to a 2-for-18 mark (11.1 per cent) from long distance in the opening round. “We got the shots we wanted to. We just werent making them,” Villanova guard Ryan Arcidiacono said. Playing in the Big East quarterfinals for the first time since 2003, the Pirates won despite getting only seven points from leading scorer Fuquan Edwin on 3-of-15 shooting. Villanova won both regular-season meetings, by an average of 16.5 points, and figured to have an advantage again after Seton Hall had to hold off Butler 51-50 Wednesday night. Early on, though, it was the Pirates who looked fresh even though they had little time to rest. On a bitterly cold day in the Big Apple, the Wildcats took a while to warm up. They missed 13 of their first 14 attempts from 3-point range and trailed 44-31 with 14 minutes remaining. But they made a flurry of steals during a 16-0 run and took their first lead at 47-44 on Hilliards 3-pointer with 8:03 left. Edwin tied it with a 3 and Teague followed with a three-point play to put the Pirates back in front. With the score tied at 59, Arcidiaconos steal sent Villanova on a fast break that culminated in Harts layup with 40 seconds left. Undeterred, the Pirates worked the ball around and Gibbs passed to Sina for a 3 from the left corner that gave them for a 62-61 edge with 17.2 seconds remaining. “That was a great college basketball game,” Wright said. “Great to be a part of it. Nadal, a two-time Wimbledon champion who is coming off his ninth French Open title, is seeded No. 2 for the grass-court Grand Slam, which starts on Monday. Murray last year became the first British player to win the Wimbledon mens title since 1936. The womens seedings, however, stick to the WTA rankings. That means five-time champion Williams is No. 1, followed by Li Na, French Open runner-up Simona Halep, Agnieszka Radwanska and Maria Sharapova. Sharapova, who won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon 10 years ago, is coming off her second French Open championship. SHANGHAI, China — Rory McIlroy reeled off five birdies on the back nine to take a one-stroke lead over Hunter Mahan after Thursdays opening round of the Shanghai Masters, a lucrative invitational tournament not sanctioned by any of the major tours. McIlroy, the 22-year-old U.S. Open winner from Northern Ireland, had eight birdies in total and no bogeys at the just-completed, Jack Nicklaus-designed course at Lake Malaren Golf Club in the outskirts of Shanghai. He finished at 8-under 64. “If I can play as solid for the next three days as I did today, I feel as if Ill be very difficult to beat,” he said. Mahan had seven birdies, including three in a row on the back nine, but he missed his final chance on the 18th hole when his putt just glanced off the lip of the cup. The 29-year-old American is hoping to make up for a disappointing finish at the Tour Championships last month, where he lost in a sudden-death playoff to Bill Haas. “You have to go out there and try to make as many birdies as you can. A lot of great players are here so you cant take your foot off the pedal, youve got to be aggressive,” Mahan said. “The course is set up well enough so that its not too long — (there are) good length holes. But its still challenging in a lot of areas so you have to be cautious on a few shots.” Englands Paul Casey and Ian Poulter and three-time major winner Padraig Harrington of Ireland were three shots behind McIlroy at 5-under 67. Anthony Kim of the United States and Li Chao of China were another stroke back at 4-under 68. Even though the first-year tournament isnt sanctioned by a major tour and is being held the same week as the PGA Tours Asia Pacific Classic in Malaysia, it still managed to attract an elite, 30-player field by offering a total purse of $5 million and a winners cheque of US$2 million — the richest first-place prize in golf. All the top players are also getting appearance money, and last place pays $25,000. The winners of each of the majors and the Tour Championships this year took home $1.44 million apiece, whilee the winner of the Asia Pacific Classic will be awarded $1.dddddddddddd3 million. There are 10 major winners in the field, including three from this year: McIlroy, Masters winner Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, who was six strokes back after shooting a 70, and PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley, who had a 72. Among the other former champions are Retief Goosen of South Africa (69), Y.E. Yang of South Korea (69), Geoff Ogilvy of Australia (73) and Jim Furyk of the United States (75). Lee Westwood of England also finished with a 69. The world No. 2 didnt look sharp for much of the day, but he nearly had an eagle on a long putt from the fringe of the green on the par-5 13th — the ball stopped less than an inch in front of the hole. There are no ranking points at stake at the tournament and PGA players did not need a competing-event release in order to take part. The PGA Tour was not pleased about the event, which is being run by the International Management Group, particularly since 16 PGA players are in the field. But the players themselves are excited about the new event. “With a small field like we have here, and I think I may get in trouble for saying this, but Im kind of glad its not sanctioned by the European or PGA tour,” said American player John Daly, who only has six cuts on the PGA Tour this year, but finished the first round in a share of eighth with Westwood, Goosen, Yang and Swedens Robert Karlsson with a 69. “It shows that China is doing something on their own. Theyre saying, Hey, we may not need the PGA Tour or European Tour, no disrespect.” Mahan said the $2-million payout was only one of the reasons he decided to play in the tournament before competing in the HSBC Champions event, also being held in Shanghai, next week. “Theyre building golf courses daily here. This is a place you want to market yourself,” he said. “No question this is one of those events I think is going to grow through time and get bigger and bigger and Im excited to be at the beginning part of it.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / e et Or had the other 10 A few days before the Stanley Cup Playoffs began, TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger asked a Western Conference general manager for his thoughts on how the postseason would be played out. The GMs answer was simple and prophetic – it was going to be nasty. And for the first week of the NHLs second season, nasty has been just one word to describe the play thus far. Where headlines are concerned, postseason accomplishments have been overtaken by dirty play, questionable hits, scary injuries and eight (thats right) suspensions. Thats one for every day of the playoffs so far with more on the way. And its certainly something that has polarized everyone who follows the game. On one side, its argued that this isnt indicitive of Canadas national pasttime and that the game has taken a turn for the worse. At the other end of the argument, its a part of the game – brought on by emotion, drama and intensity and only makes the postseason that much better to watch. So heres Daves question to you: “Is the on-ice mayhem that brings multiple suspensions enhancing your enjoyment of the Stanley Cup playoffs, or detracting from it?” Here are the answers that Dave liked best: Paul had these comments: “Chicago screams about Raffi Torres. I didnt hear Chicago say anything about Duncan Keith. What the NHL is doing doesnt work – time to try something else.” This from Joe: “If the next Philly-Pittsburgh game were on Saturday instead of Friday, Id re-schedule my wedding.” Daryl offers this thought: “Only when they faced elimination did the Penguins concentrate on playing hockey. Funny how well that works.” Fil writes: “It makes you wonder why we didnt see more of Colton Orr and Jay Rosehill down the stretch. The Leafs could still be playing.” Greg sent this observation: “With so many stoppages, I have time to go to the fridge without missing any goals, so I guess it has enhanced my enjoyment.” John writes this e-mail: “Hockey is no longer family entertainment. I wont let my kids watch the playoffs unless Im there to monitor the TV set.” And Norm had to know wed use this: “Instead of switching to a 2-2 Ottawa-NY Rangers tie game, I kept watching Pittsburghs 10-3 blowout of Philly, just in case. Youre welcome, TSN.” And Daves Reply to All: The NHL has a clear choice that it cant make. It has to choose between mayhem and safety. It wants both, but it cant have both. Some in the hockey audience would make the choice for the NHL by wiping out the office of Brendan Shanahan in order to create an “anything goes” jungle that would let the animals hurt each other and deal with each other. The NHL might like the consistency that doing nothing would provide, but the NHL cant shrug its shoulders and look the other way – not as long as it professes to care about concussions, and of course, it should care and it must care about concussions. Its out of business if it doesnt, and even at that, beware the lawsuits from victims of hockey violence that are bound to mirror the current situation in football. So the choice should be easy, but as hard as it tries to avoid making it, the NHL is seen to be confused, and out of control, and negligent. The Washington Wizards were again trying to erase the stigma of mediocrity. Surely, against this Celtics lineup, this would be the night they would end their long and laborious quest to get above .500. Never mind. The Celtics won. Jeff Green put the team on his shoulders and scored a season-high 39 points, while the Wizards wilted with a display of selfish basketball. Boston blew a 19-point first-half lead, but Gerald Wallace made a driving layup with 2.5 seconds remaining in overtime Wednesday night for the 113-111 victory that snapped a 10-game road losing streak. “Lot of reasons to give up,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. “And they didnt do that.” Green shot early and often, finishing with career-highs in 3-pointers attempted (16) and made (8). Rookie Phil Pressey added a career-high 20 points. The Celtics played without Rajon Rando, Avery Bradley and Jerryd Bayless and at one point had Chris Johnson and Vander Blue, both on 10-day contracts, on the floor together in the second quarter. “I just put myself in the position where I had to be the man to carry the team and shoot the ball,” Green said. “So thats what I did.” John Wall had 28 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his second career triple-double for Washington, but he went 9 for 29 from the field and missed a potential game-winning, contested 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime. The Wizards havent won a game to move above .500 since Halloween 2009 and have failed to win this season at 0-0, 9-9, 14-14, 19-19 and 20-20. The milestone has become such a psychological hurdle that coach Randy Wittman this week had to caution against thoughts that “all of a sudden fairy dust is going to fall on us if we get over .500.” This time Wittman was angry because he said his players came down with a case of “I got mine,” looking to pad their stats against a team that was supposed to be easy pickings. “I can get mine because who are we playing?” Wittman said forcefully. &quuot; You cannot screw with the basketball gods like that.dddddddddddd It always comes back to get you. … Every player in this league can play. Theyre in the NBA. Every player can play. And if you dont give them the respect, this is what happens." Wall pleaded guilty. “It starts with me,” he said. “I took too many shots tonight and didnt move the ball like were supposed to in the first half. … For some reason, we dont go out there in that first half when weve got an opportunity to go (above) .500 and play as a team. We get to playing selfish.” Bostons Rondo sat out the second half of a back-to-back in his return from major knee surgery, Bradley is sidelined for about two weeks after spraining his right ankle against the Miami Heat the night before, and recently acquired guard Bayless missed his second consecutive game with a sprained left big toe and is day to day. Stevens therefore started a lineup consisting of a backup point guard — undrafted rookie Pressey — and four forwards. Blue made his NBA debut after being signed earlier in the day. The Wizards played the first half as if in slow motion, but the Celtics looked like their patchwork selves in the third quarter, committing a pair of offensive fouls during an 11-0 Wizards run. Martell Webster gave the Wizards their first lead of the game with a four-point play that made the score 88-87 with 6:37 remaining in regulation, but neither team could make a clutch shot in the final minute of the fourth quarter with the score tied. Pressey had made only 6 of 38 3-pointers all season, but he went 5 for 6 from 3-point range against the Wizards. His 3-pointer in the final minute of overtime gave the Celtics a 111-108 lead. The Wizards tied the game when Marcin Gortat made 1 of 2 free throws with 13.9 seconds left in the extra period, but they couldnt stop Wallace from making the winning basket. “We had a good start to the third quarter,” Wizards forward Trevor Booker said. “But other than that, we played like doo-doo.” NOTES: Bostons 10-game road skid was its longest since a 12-game streak in 2007. … Booker returned after missing one game with a sprained left ankle. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / though the rule stipul CALGARY — The Calgary Flames are in familiar territory looking for a different outcome. The Flames came out of the all-star break with 52 points in 50 games, a pace identical to last season after 50. Calgary ended up finishing 10th in the Western Conference and three points out of the final playoff spot last year. If theyre to avoid sitting out the post-season a third year in a row, the Flames need to win, at minimum, two out of every three of their remaining 31. Even that might not be enough. The West is once again tightly packed with just six points separating seventh from 12th on Wednesday. Calgary was tied for 10th and three points out of a playoff spot at 23-22-6. The Flames host the Chicago Blackhawks (29-15-7) on Friday. “Id be lying if I said I wasnt looking at the standings and looking at our situation,” winger Alex Tanguay said Wednesday. "I think we all do it. “We were right in there last year and for some reason in March we fell back a little bit. Certainly its on all of us now to make sure we get those extra points, those extra three points we were short of last year, to get ourselves in the playoffs.” The win-two-of-three mantra was a clearly stated team goal to end last season and to begin this one. Head coach Brent Sutter has altered the message, however, and broken objectives down to even smaller pieces in hopes of achieving results. “A year ago, winning two out of every three is something we really focused in on and talked a lot as a group,” Sutter said. “We wanted to do it from the start of the season, but it kind of didnt have the steam it needed to have the inside the room for various reasons. Its no ones fault for it. It just didnt happen and so you focus in on other goals.” Sutter now emphasizes goals within the game for individual players. He wants them thinking about their execution instead of obsessing over grabbing four points out of every six. One reason for a shift in the message is the Flames have moved players in and out of the lineup recently via injuries and trades, he explained. In January, forwards Rene Bourque and Brendan Morrison and defenceman Brendan Mikkelson were traded and forward Mike Cammalleri and centre Blair Jones were acquired. Injuries prompted call-ups from the AHL with forward Krys Kolanos the most recent reinforcement summoned Wednesday. “The focus this year has been more on individuals and part of it because of a lot of different bodies in our lineup and young kids in our lineup,” Sutter said. “(Its) focusing more on whats more important in this shift youre giving us right now and coming back and focusing on the next shift.” “Dynamics are different, but when its all said and done, hopefully the goal is the same and you win two out of every three. You put it in smaller terms, but ultimately you want your goal to be the same at the end of the day.” A perceived lack of offence is the buzz around the Flames these days after scoring one goal in two straight losses. But more at issue is Calgary was tied in the third period against two elite teams and didnt seize the moment. The Flames fell 1-0 to San Jose last week before the all-star break and 3-1 to Detroit on Tuesday. Goalscoring, Tanguay said, is not the problem. “If wed won yesterdays game 2-1, even though wed only score two goals we wouldnt hear anything about it because we won,” he said, quite correctly. “Right now, whether we win with five goals or whether we win with one goal, were all about getting points,” Tanguay continued. “I dont think theres problems with offence with this team. We have guys who are capable of putting points on the board, but like Ive said, were looking at winning games and if we have to do it with a 1-0 win well take that.” The Flames spent over half an hour closeted with the coaching staff prior to stepping on the ice Wednesday. Cammalleri, who came to Calgary on Jan. 13 in the Bourque trade with Montreal, hinted there was heat in Sutters words. “We talked, coached talked and from my short time here, it seems like hes that kind of coach. He likes to wear his emotions on his sleeve and tells you how he feels and be honest with you,” Cammalleri said. Sutter said his message was for his players to bear down at crucial moments in games. “In a game like last night, for example, its 1-1, stay with your game, dont be the team thats going to break,” he said. “You get into these games and in the last 10 minutes, you have to nail it. You have to be razor shop in everything you do. You cant miss an assignment and thats what we basically talked about.” That the Flames are in striking distance of the playoffs is due in large part to goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff. Of the goaltenders in the NHL who played 40 games or more Wednesday, the Finnish workhorse ranked fourth in save percentage at .919. Flames management vows every year to play the backup more to conserve Kiprusoff for later in the season and again, it hasnt happened. The 35-year-old has played all but seven games this season, in part because regular backup Henrik Karlsson missed 25 games with sprained knee ligament. Karlsson is expected back in the lineup Friday, but may not play soon because Calgary cant afford to sit Kiprusoff now. “Were in a position where we have to play our No. 1 goalie,” Sutter said Wednesday. “Thats just what it is, yet I do know theres certain point in our schedule that were going to have to use our backup.” If Kiprusoff appears in 26 of the remaining 31, hell have played 70 or more games for the seventh straight year. Winger Lee Stempniak left Tuesdays game with a “lower-body” injury. Sutter didnt provide an update on his status following Wednesdays practice. In addition to calling up Kolanos, the Flames announced theyd signed the 30-year-old to a two-year, two-way contract worth US$1.05 million. Kolanos has played 136 NHL games for Phoenix, Edmonton and Minnesota. “Hes getting an opportunity now again to prove he can play in the National Hockey League, so theres incentive for him to come in here and play well,” Sutter said. “Thats what we want from him.” . Brian Nicholson,Edmonton Brian: The referees job is to impose penalties for violations of the rules whenever they occur throughout the course of a game; including after time has expired on the game clock signaling the end of the match. The authority empowered to the referees over the game participants do not end until all players and coaches have left the ice and are safely in their respective drressing rooms.dddddddddddd The scrums and ultimate fighting that began in the dying seconds of the game and continued well after the final horn was part of the game and could not be ignored by the game officials. They could not turn a blind eye to it and say it never existed. Even though the game was effectively over, the officials must continue to police the game participants. The job is never done until the paper work has been completed! An automatic fine of $100 is incurred to a player assessed a misconduct penalty (rule 22.5). Failure by players to clear the area of a fight shall, in addition to the other penalties that may be assessed, result in a fine to the team of $1,000 and the coach of said team in the amount of $1,000 (46.18). Rule 31.9 (viii) states that the Referee shall report to the Commissioner promptly and in detail the circumstances surrounding any unusual occurrence that takes place on or off the ice, before, during or after the game. Should rule 28 supplementary discipline be invoked, it does not bode well for the Officials if penalties were not assessed following a major altercation even though the rule stipulates additional fines and suspensions can be imposed whether or not such offense has been penalized by the Referee. It is also important to note that a whistle was blown to halt play as a result of the altercation and prior to Chris Porter depositing the puck in the Jets unattended net with .01 seconds on the game clock. As a result of the whistle stopping play the goal was not allowed to stand. A “ceremonial face-off” is no longer required to complete the game when player aggression such as this takes place just prior to final horn. Only after breaking up the two sides and imposing the appropriate penalties Brian, are the officials authorized to “just call it a night!” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / les. "I think the service has bee SOCHI, Russia — Jonathan Toews pushed Matt Duchene into the centre of the ice as Team Canada started to stretch before practice. After sitting out as the 14th forward against Latvia, Duchene is back in the game following an injury to John Tavares. Duchene will replace Tavares in Canadas lineup for the Olympic semifinal showdown with the United States on Friday after the star centre suffered a tournament-ending knee injury. Its also a season-ending injury, as the New York Islanders confirmed their franchise player tore the medial collateral ligament and meniscus in his left knee on a hit from Latvias Arturs Kulda. The team said he would remain in Sochi with Team Canada for the rest of the Olympics before returning home for further evaluation. In the meantime, Canada must go on without him, and that means Duchene stepping into his spot centring the fourth line between Patrick Sharp and Rick Nash. “Johnnys been playing great for us, and hopefully he has a speedy recovery,” Duchene said. “But its a big opportunity for myself now, chance to play centre, to play where Im comfortable. Theres been a lot of unfamiliars in this tournament, and when you get a short chance at it, sometimes can be tough, so this is going to be much more familiar.” This is where Canadas best-in-the-world depth at centre provides a big advantage. Duchene goes from being a healthy scratch in two of the first four games and playing left wing in the other two back to the middle where he plays for the Colorado Avalanche. Duchene called speed his biggest asset, and its undoubtedly one reason coach Mike Babcock plugged him in where Tavares had been playing. “Thats why were set up (with so many centres),” Babcock said. “Duchys a real good centreman with great speed, so were not concerned about him that way.” Another reason might be that it meant not having to mess with the other three lines. Again in practice Thursday, Sidney Crosby centred Chris Kunitz and Patrice Bergeron, Ryan Getzlaf centred Jamie Benn and Corey Perry, and Toews centred Patrick Marleau and Jeff Carter. If those lines stay together against the U.S., aside from Tavares out because of injury, itll mark the first time Canada had consistent lines two games in a row. Thats not any accident. “We like what we got going,” Babcock said. “Were trying to build a team here, too. Were trying to make everybody important. We knew there was going to be some lineup changes.” In some places, there are no changes. Carey Price will start in goal for the third straight game and fourth time at these Olympics, and the same defensive pairs of Duncan Keith with Shea Weber, Marc-Edouard Vlasic with Drew Doughty and Jay Bouwmeester with Alex Pietrangelo are expected to stick together. Given that the forwards have scored only six of Canadas 13 goals through four games, there might be some benefits to building chemistry from game to game. “That can add a little bit of comfort going into the next game if youre playing with the same guys and you kind of get that rhythm together,” Getzlaf said. “But … that can change with the drop of the puck, so youve just got to be prepared for everything and be prepared to go out and work that system no matter who youre playing with.” Kunitz took Tavares spot on the power play with Crosby, Carter, Sharp and Keith. The other unit of Toews, Getzlaf, Perry, Weber and Doughty remained the same. . You can catch the action live on TSN2 at 10pm et/7pm pt. The players looked relaxed and smiled as they filed out for practice. There was little evidence the teams confidence had been shaken by a pair of subpar performances and its first loss in eight Major League Soccer games. There was even talk about how the Seattle Sounders, Vancouvers Cascadia rival with the best record in MLS, are the right medicine to cure whatever ails the Whitecaps. “Its the perfect test to bounce back,” forward Nigel Reo-Coker said about Saturdays game at BC Place Stadium. “Its a great test for the team. No one expects us to win this game. They are the most experienced team, I would say, in the league. For us, as an emerging young team, its a great time for us to prove to people we should be taken seriously as a team.” The Whitecaps had a franchise record eight-game unbeaten streak (3-0-5) snapped in a 2-0 loss to the Colorado Rapids last week. Vancouver had also played poorly in a 0-0 draw to the Montreal Impact the previous game. A Vancouver team that had gone six of seven games scoring two or more goals has suddenly had problems putting the ball in the net. “The last couple of games I dont think our team has produced the same amount of opportunities they have in the past,” said forward Erik Hurtado. “That is going to affect us scoring goals.” Coach Carl Robinson doesnt see any big problems with the Whitecaps game, just areas that need little fixes. “Good teams are able to do the crappy jobs very well,” said Robinson. "Weve done that the first part of the season. In the last two games I think we went away from that. “Our transition play needs to be a little bit better. Its the little details that make the big differences. If we get back to that, then everyone will put a smile on their face.” Seattle leads the MLS standings with 35 points from a 11-3-2 record. One of those ties came against Vancouver last month. The Sounders have also scored 33 goals, more than any other team in the league. Vancouver is fifth in the Western Conference, 13 points behind Seattle with a 5-3-7 record. Steven Beitashour, who is returning to the Whitecaps lineup after playing for Iran at the World Cup, said the last two results are a minor bump in a long season. “We were on a nice streak,” said the 27-year-old right back. "The guys did well during that. “The league is going to have runs, good runs, bad runs. I dont think two is bad at all. Im confident this weekend we will have a good result, then we will start a new winning streak.dddddddddddd” The last time the teams met Seattle salvaged the tie on a late penalty kick after a controversial call. Sounders coach Sigi Schmid doesnt expect things to be any easier in the rematch. “They are going to be a team that is motivated,” Schmid said on the Sounders website. "Im sure they havent been happy with their last two games they played, they havent scored any goals. “Coach Robinson will be under them and motivating them. That team is going to be hungry when they play us.” One reason the Whitecaps have had problems scoring goals is teams are dropping back defenders to counter Vancouvers speed. Robinson said his team must be smarter with the ball when they have possession. “We have to get back to maintaining possession, dictating possession, but also being a threat in the final third,” he said. “We know we have quick players, but have we got players with an understanding how to move (opposition) players out of position? Seattle is a very organized team. They like to get eight, nine men behind the ball. We are going to have to be open and expansive but also a little bit creative in our final third play.” Vancouver could also improve its set plays. The Whitecaps have been unable to take advantage of some good deliveries from midfielder Pedro Morales. “I think the service has been there,” said Robinson. “Now its the challenge for the players to get in the right position. Its about movement in the box.” The Whitecaps have been guilty of giving up leads. Robinson said thats a result of his team still learning how to deal with certain game situations. “The top teams are able to grind out results,” he said. "I havent got an experienced core. I have a young group. “When we bend we might break at the moment. Its important we learn from scenarios like that. At the moment we have broken but we will learn form certain things.” One player thrilled to be back in the Whitecaps lineup is Medhi Ballouchy. The 31-year-old midfielder from Morocco spent 11 months recovering from anterior cruciate ligament surgeries on both knees. During that time he also lost his father to cancer. Ballouchy played 20 minutes against Colorado and called the experience “amazing.” “Taking something from a soccer player … its always hard,” he said about his long recovery. "Im just happy (and) at this point dont even want to think about it. “I hope I can stay in this phase for a long time.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / t, to replace L SAN DIEGO — The first-round Davis Cup match between Britain and the United States will be played on a clay court in left field at baseballs Petco Park from Jan. 31-Feb. 2. While organizers havent decided if itll be red or green clay, they feel their choice of surface will give the Americans an advantage over Britain, which is expected to be led by defending Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. “The feeling is that Murray and anyone below him would have trouble on clay,” Jeff Ryan of the U.S. Tennis Association said after a news conference on the infield at the downtown ballpark, home to the San Diego Padres, on Tuesday. “Its not their preferred surface. In between now and then, with Andy still recovering from his surgery and going to Australia and playing there, I dont think theyll have a lot of clay court experience. The home court advantage is right there. Thats it. Were used to getting it against us all the time. Were getting much more comfortable on clay.” Organizers havent decided whether itll be red clay, which is made from crushed bricks, or on Har-Tru green clay, which is made from crushed stone. Playing the match on clay probably is a lesser of three evils decision. Murray is best on the speedier surfaces of hard courts and grass, as evidenced by his Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon this year and the U.S. Open in 2012. But hes not afraid of clay, having trained from his teen years on the slow red surface in Spain. He once reached the semifinals at the French Open, something none of the current crop of American men has come close to doing. In addition to that run to the final four in 2011 — before losing to Rafael Nadal, which is no shame at Roland Garros — Murray also made it to the quarterfinals in Paris two other times, in 2009 and 2012. Capacity will be about 8,000. Some 2,000 permanent seats in the left field stands will be augmented by about 6,000 more in a temporary stadium built around the court. “I think it creates a lot of excitement,” said Bill Kellogg, president of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. “Davis Cup is all about crowd and people and cheering, which is not what people usually think tennis is. That national pride, I dont think it gets any greater than it does in a ballpark.” Itll be the first time a Davis Cup match will be played in an open-air ballpark in the United States. The United States is undefeated in six Davis Cup matches in the San Diego area. The Britain-U.S. rivalry is the oldest in Davis Cup history, dating to the first competition in 1900, when the Americans beat the British in Boston. The United States last faced Britain in the 1999 World Group first round in England, winning 3-2 when Jim Courier rallied in the fifth match to beat Greg Rusedski in the fifth set, 8-6. Courier, now the U.S. captain, also won in five sets on the opening day of that match, beating Tim Henman in 4 hours, 12 minutes. The one drawback is that the final day of the match is Super Bowl Sunday. “We would prefer not to have it conflicting with the Super Bowl, but fact is, it will be largely decided by the time the Super Bowl starts,” Kellogg said. “Its really not a huge factor in diminishing the appeal of the Davis Cup. Louis Cardinals had a major need at shortstop and signed a veteran free agent who, while having PED issues, has been a potent hitter throughout his career.DETROIT — The Lions re-signed tight end Brandon Pettigrew on Friday, keeping one of Matthew Staffords top targets and a player who can potentially make defences regret focusing too much on Calvin Johnson. “The key is to be able to keep your good players,” new Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. “And, I think anytime you can do that in an organization, its great. It doesnt always work out for you, but when you can, and a guys been productive for you, I think its huge.” Pettigrew will get a $16 million, four-year contract with half of the money guaranteed, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke Friday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because terms were not announced. “Obviously, this is certainly a long-term commitment from both sides and were certainly looking forward to that,” Caldwell said. The Lions drafted Pettigrew with the 20th overall pick in 2009, the same year they selected Stafford first overall in the NFL draft. The native of Tyler, Texas, has 284 receptions for 2,828 yards and 16 touchdowns in five NFL seasons. Pettigrew said part of the reason he wanted to stay was because hes in “a groove,” with teammates such as Stafford. “We got drafted together,” he said. “Weve already got that going, and I think thats important. I love the city. Im grateful for being able to be here. The city is going through change, as is the organization. Its just an honour to be a part of that.” He tested the market as a free agent before deciding to stay in Detroit. “Of course, the pursuits were real because thats just part of the business,” Pettigrew said. The 6-foot-5, 265-pound Pettigrew is yet another weapon for Stafford, who already has Johnson and will now have receiver Golden Tate next season. Detroit, with a solid offensive line, should be able to strike a balance in the running game with Reggie Bush in his second season paired with Joique Bell, who was re-signed with a $9.3 million, three-year deal earlier this week. “He gives you a guuy that really is a dual threat in terms of being able to handle the end-line blocking on the line of scrimmage, which he does very well,” Caldwell said.dddddddddddd “Also, obviously, hes a threat in the passing game. When you look at whats going to happen in most cases with the guys that we have on the outside, our inside receivers are going to certainly become a bigger part of our game.” Pettigrew is coming off a relatively disappointing season, which probably cost him some money on the market. He had 41 receptions for 416 yards and two TDs, his lowest numbers in each category since he was a rookie. When Pettigrew was at his best in 2001, he caught 83 passes for 777 yards and five TDs — all career highs — and helped the franchise end an 11-year post-season skid. Pettigrew said he spoke to some members of teams new staff, including Caldwell. “Hes already told me he wants me to step up and be in that role of a leader and coming out to accept that,” Pettigrew said. “Ive been here long enough, and I agree with him. He seems like a great guy. So, Im looking forward to getting back.” The Lions next significant move may be finding a starting safety to play alongside Glover Quin, who was signed last year as a free agent, to replace Louis Delmas. They seem to be interested in adding veteran safety James Ihedigbo, but he left team headquarters without a contract after a visit Thursday. Ihedigbo made 99 tackles last season, ranking second on the Baltimore Ravens, and had three interceptions after not picking off one pass in his first five NFL seasons. He started 16 games last season and 12 games in 2011 for the New England Patriots and ranked fifth on the team in tackles. He spent his first three seasons in the league with the New York Jets after making the team in 2008 as an undrafted rookie. Detroit, desperate for success with only one playoff victory since 1957, also hopes Ndamukong Suh will sign a new contract to avoid having the defensive tackle count more than $20 million against the salary cap in 2014. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / o run the ball out. Gi PHILADELPHIA — Evan Turner hit the winning basket at the buzzer and scored 29 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 121-120, overtime win over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night. Paul Pierce hit a 3-pointer with 16.9 seconds left in OT to give the Nets the short-lived lead. Turner, sensational all game, drove past a pair of defenders and tossed up the last-gasp shot. The ball bounced three times around the rim before it dropped through the net. After a brief review, the bucket stood, Turner was mobbed by his teammates and the Sixers snapped a seven-game losing streak. Thaddeus Young scored 25 points for the Sixers, and Michael Carter-Williams had 15 points and 10 assists. Alan Anderson had a season-high 26 points for the Nets, Pierce scored 24 with 10 rebounds, and Deron Williams had 17 points and 14 assists. Brooklyn grabbed a 115-113 lead early in OT after Turner and Pierce swapped 3-pointers. Carter-Williams hit two free throws for a 116-115 lead, then had the assist to Young in front of Brooklyns bench on a 3-pointer with 2:02 left. The 76ers missed three shots on the same possession, setting up Pierces clutch 3, Brooklyns 15th of the game. Turned out, the Sixers had one last dramatic shot of their own. Turners 13th basket of the game was his biggest of the season, and he was mobbed on the court by a Sixers team buried well below .500. Carter-Williams returned after a seven-game absence because of a skin infection and teamed with Tony Wroten in the backcourt for an effective 1-2 punch. Wroten scored 19 points. Thanks to OT, the Sixers finished with season highs in field goals (51) and assists (36). Mirza Teletovic hit 6 3s and scored 18 points for the Nets. Brook Lopez had 22 points. The Nets played without veterans Joe Johnson (personal reasons) and Kevin Garnett (rest). Without their veterans, the Nets missed twice on one of the final possessions of regulation and the Sixers grabbed the rebound. Philadelphia rookie coach Brett Brown called timeout with 21.1 seconds left, setting up Carter-Williams drive down the lane. He beat Williams to the basket, but ended with a wild misfire on a left-handed layup over Lopez. Brooklyn grabbed the rebound and called timeout. Williams missed at the horn over Youngs outstretched arm to send it into OT. Neither team could break away in the fourth. Young hit a mid-range jumper from the top of the key with 1:58 left for a 107-106 lead. Anderson snatched it right back on two free throws — a lopsided edge for the Nets. The Nets made 21 of 30 free throws; the 76ers just 10 of 15. Turner, who made his first eight shots from the floor, hit only the front end on a pair of attempts, but tied the game 108-all. The Nets struggled to build a small lead for most of the quarter. They botched an alley-oop and Williams had the ball slip out of his hands on a layup attempt. Still, all five starters hit double-digit scoring in regulation, and Williams had a double-double. Anderson, who averages only 8.0 points, connected on a pair of 3s during a 10-1 run late in the third that sent the Nets into the fourth with an 83-82 lead. Johnson made 10 3-pointers, most in the NBA this season, and scored a season-high 37 points in the Nets 130-94 victory over the Sixers on Monday night. With Johnson out, Teletovic took over as Brooklyns 3-point ace, hitting five in the first half against one of the worst-defending teams in the league. He nearly did as much damage alone from 3-point range as the Sixers did as a team. NOTES: Wroten has started all games Carter-Williams has missed this season. … There were 31 lead changes and 21 ties. DUBLIN, Ireland — Ireland has a sniff of its first Six Nations rugby title in five years after humbling defending champion Wales 26-3 at Lansdowne Road on Saturday. Ireland scored the games only two tries from superb rolling mauls while Jonathan Sexton kicked four penalties, his only miss from beyond halfway. By contrast, Wales only shot in anger was a second-half try disallowed, while Irelands superior discipline gave Leigh Halfpenny only one penalty kick, nearly an hour in. Wales, trying to become the first team to win the championship three successive times outright, promised to be direct and physical but was overwhelmed by a swarming defence and forced into multiple errors; 15 penalties and two free kicks, 16 missed tackles, 10 turnovers, two chargedowns. Wales paid for it with a first away loss in the championship since 2011, when it also last failed to score a try. Coach Warren Gatland, following Wales biggest Six Nations defeat in his seven-year tenure, called it his lowest moment. “We wont be thinking in terms of retaining the Six Nations, well be thinking about improving for our next game against France,” he said. Gatland was taken aback by Irelands rugged defence, and his side conceding 17 penalties and free kicks. “I cant remember any occasion when they moved the ball through the backline at us,” he said. “They dominated us up front and caused us a lot of problems. We have a target of 10 (penalties) or loss, so to give 17 away was simply unacceptable.” After two successive wins for the first time since 2010, Ireland was in pole position for this years title, though it must win at least one of its two away games, against England next in two weeks, or France in the tournament closer next month. “Im not going to think too far ahead,” Ireland coach Joe Schmidt said. “But its certainly a gathering of confidence for us.” He said replacement lock Dan Tuohy may have a broken forearm. The 13-0 halftime score fairly reflected Irelands control. By the time Sexton kicked them 6-0 ahead in the 17th minute, Wales had conceded five penalties to one. The scrums were a mess ffor both sides but the lineout was an Irish pressure point, thanks to OConnell and Devin Toner.dddddddddddd Even in the collisions, the Welsh came off second best. Scott Williams cut down Irish opposite Brian ODriscoll, who was winded for a bit, but it was Williams who soon walked off cradling his right shoulder. With Wales putting out a dozen Lions to Irelands nine, some big Welsh names were left in the shade: Gethin Jenkins and Adam Jones by Cian Healy and Mike Ross in the front row, Sam Warburton and Dan Lydiate by Chris Henry and Peter OMahony in the loose, and George North and Alex Cuthbert by Andrew Trimble and Dave Kearney on the wings. Sexton, Paul OConnell, Toner were also Irish standouts. Wales coming off second-best everywhere was no better encapsulated than about half an hour in. Wales earned a lineout throw-in on the Irish 22, but Wales blew the lift and Toner didnt even have to jump to take the gift catch. Moments later, Wales turned over the ball near halfway and Sexton had the foresight to realize Halfpenny was up near the play, so he kicked down the line and No. 8 Jamie Heaslip forced Rhys Priestland to run the ball out. Given an attacking lineout five meters out, Toner took the catch, handed the ball to Henry, and the flanker was trailered in a fast rolling maul into the right corner for his first test try. Sexton converted from the touchline. After Sexton made it 16-0 in the 46th, Irish fans began singing, their confidence rising. When Halfpenny, on the occasion of him becoming the youngest Wales player to 50 caps at 25, finally kicked their first points, OMahony drew a second penalty for Ireland and Sexton delivered. Wales one try chance came after scrumhalf Mike Phillips tapped two consecutive penalties and replacement prop Rhodri Jones burrowed over but he was penalized for a double movement. In the last minute, Ireland expressed its power again when it rolled a maul from a lineout 20 metres out, which sucked in so many Welshman that replacement flyhalf Paddy Jackson ran in untouched, until Liam Williams dropped an elbow on his face. Jackson still had the last say, with the conversion. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / h his third hit. McGehee OTTAWA — Chris Phillips couldnt have scripted a better night. The Ottawa defenceman scored twice, including the game-winner, in his 1,000th NHL game and the Senators stopped a seven-game winless streak with a 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night. “This is unbelievable,” Phillips said. “The whole hype around it was fun and exciting to be in my 1,000th game and to top it off with a couple goals and one ended up being a game winner — you cant write that stuff.” Jason Spezza scored twice for the Senators (28-22-7), while Bobby Butler, playing his first game after being a healthy scratch for the last three, had two assists. Alex Auld, making his first start since Dec. 30th, faced 27 shots. Gabriel Bourque, Patric Hornqvist and Martin Erat scored for the Predators (32-18-5). Pekka Rinne stopped 25 shots. Former Senator Mike Fisher made his return to Ottawa since being traded to the Predators last February. Fisher was honoured by the Senators midway through the first period with a video montage and a standing ovation from the 18,500 in attendance. “I definitely appreciated it and it meant a lot to me for sure,” Fisher said. “I said earlier I almost wished I wore a tinted visor because I was a bit emotional.” Fisher said he was thrilled to see Phillips, a former teammate and good friend, have such a big night. “I was really happy for him,” Fisher said. “He played real well. He stole the show for sure.” Leading 3-2 heading into the third, the Senators played with a desperation that hadnt been seen of late. They were strong on the forecheck and kept the Predators offensive chances to a minimum. Phillips scored the winner on the power play with just over six minutes remaining as he banged home Filip Kubas rebound. It was Phillips fourth career two-goal game. The last time he accomplished the feat was in his 800th game in 2009. “I think (Phillips) scoring two goals proves theres hockey gods in rewarding a great person,” Spezza said. “Hes a great teammate, hes a guy thats highly regarded in this room and I dont think theres a guy in this room that isnt happy for him and to see him have the night he had was a pretty special night for him.” Erat added a late goal for the Predators. Despite giving up a late goal in the dying minutes of the first, the Senators came out with a solid effort to start the second. Phillips first goal of the game, his first in 75 games, gave the Senators the lead, but the Predators tied the game when Hornqvist scored on the power play. The puck seemed to take a strange bounce as Auld looked totally unprepared for the shot. Auld played a solid game for the Senators and was particularly good in the third when the team needed him most. “I thought he was aggressive in the third period and met the puck at the top of the crease and really gave us a solid effort,” said Senators coach Paul Maclean. Ottawa finished the second with a 3-2 lead as Spezza picked up his second of the game. Spezza jammed the puck past Rinne on the power play as bodies scrambled for a loose puck in the crease. The Senators opened the scoring at the four-minute mark as Spezza beat Rinne over the left shoulder for his first goal in eight games. “Its a big game and I hadnt been producing offensively and our line has to be good offensively for us to win games,” Spezza said. Bourque tied 1-1 as he beat Auld through the legs with just over a minute remaining in the first. Notes: After missing 11 games with a lower body injury Brian Lee was back in the line-up. … The Senators were without C Peter Regin (shoulder, out for season), C Jesse Winchester (concussion, indefinitely). MIAMI — Casey McGehee tied the game in the eighth inning with a two-out, two-run double, then drove home the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th, and the Miami Marlins averted a series sweep by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 Sunday. Pittsburghs Vance Worley pitched seven innings in his season debut and departed with a 2-0 lead. But the Marlins tied the game when McGehee doubled off Tony Watson, who entered the game with a streak of 21 1-3 consecutive scoreless innings. Leading off the 10th, Rafael Furcal fouled a ball off his leg and tumbled to the dirt in pain, but stayed in the game long enough to single. Pinch runner Ed Lucas advanced on a sacrifice, and Giancarlo Stanton was intentionally walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and McGehees fly to right field against Jared Hughes (3-2) scored Lucas without a play. The Marlins earned their sixth walkoff win and broke a three-game losing streak. The Pirates had won four in a row and were bidding for their first three-game series sweep in Miami since 1993. Miamis A.J. Ramos (4-0) loaded the bases with none out in the 10th but escaped. On a 3-2 pitch, Russell Martin grounded into a 5-2-3 double play, and Clint Barmes struck out to end the threat. Worley was recalled from Triple-A before the game to fill in for left-hander Francisco Liriano, who went on the disabled list Wednesday with a left oblique strain. Worley allowed five hits and no walks. Miamis Henderson Alvarez allowed two runs in seven innings. Pittsburghs Jared Hughes escaped a jam in the ninth, retiring two batters with a runner at second. Pirates leadoff hitteer Gregory Polanco, who has had a hit in all six games since breaking into the big leagues, had two infield singles and is batting .dddddddddddd387. Andrew McCutchen had two hits and is batting .444 during an 11-game hitting streak. Polanco singled in the third and scored the games first run on Starling Martes double. That ended Alvarezs streak of 27 consecutive scoreless innings at Marlins Park. Josh Harrison singled home a run in the fourth to put the Pirates ahead 2-0. Miamis rally in the eighth began when pinch hitter Jeff Baker led off with an infield single, and Rafael Furcal also singled. Reed Johnson and Giancarlo Stanton struck out, but McGehee tied the game with his third hit. McGehee leads the majors with 30 hits with runners in scoring position, and hes batting .411 in those situations. Téma: Jak postupovat / nds at the Canadian Tou EDMONTON – Kyle Koch pondered the question for a moment: how different is the Edmonton Eskimos dressing room this week, after two straight losses, compared to Week 5 when they were 5-0? “Ah, theres not too much difference,” said the veteran offensive lineman. “Everyones still pretty upbeat. You have to remember we went from 5-0 to 5-2, the worlds not crumbling. We played a bad game (in Montreal). We just have to get ready to win a game this week.” After going unbeaten in their first five games, the Eskimos lost 28-16 in Winnipeg and 27-4 in Montreal. They return to the comfort of Commonwealth Stadium where they are 3-0 this season and meet the 1-6 B.C. Lions this evening. Watch all the action live on TSN and TSN Mobile TV. Also, watch live streaming and join TSN.cas live blog. Coverage is underway LIVE NOW. For the surprising Eskimos, the next game is crucial not only to end the losing streak but to ensure theyre at least tied for first in the West Division with the Calgary Stampeders going into the bye week. It is, said Koch and several other Eskimos, still about getting two big points. “When we were 4-0 it wasnt about going to 5-0, it was about taking those two points every week,” said Koch. "Now were 5-2 its still about taking those two points, especially from a team in your division. “Were tied for first, so the world isnt crumbling.” The world isnt, but the Eskimos receiving corps is. All four starters – Fred Stamps (abdominal surgery) Adarius Bowman (cracked ribs), Jason Barnes (cracked ribs) and Marcus Henry (concussion) – are injured and only Bowman has a slight chance of playing Friday. Edmonton brought in two new receivers this week – Dobson Collins, a recent cut by the Lions, and Prechae Rodriquez, released by Montreal after training camp – and with both expected to play Friday the Eskimos will have a reduced playbook available. That will likely mean more emphasis on the running game that had been so good early in the season but was a disaster in Montreal, where the Eskimos finished with minus one-yard rushing on six carries. “We just had a rough night, it happens sometimes,” said running back Jerome Messam, who carried four times for minus three yards and a fumble. “It was non-existent,” Calvin McCarty, who carried twice for one yard, said of the run game. “We didnt run the ball well, we didnt execute the run plays we did run.” The lack of a run game allowed the Montreal defence to focus on quarterback Ricky Ray, who was sacked six times. “Thats definitely not going to get it done,” Ray said of the non-existent running game. "We have to get back to controlling the line of scrimmage and that means being balanced (on offence). … “Early in the season we were getting good play all around offensively. Thats what we have to get back to, being good with the run, good with the pass, making some big plays, protecting the football, doing all those good things we were doing early.” Through their five wins the Eskimos had a balanced offence, something Lions coach Wally Buono will be watching for on Friday. “Youve got to try to make sure that you dont give up the big play and this is where Ricky Ray can really hurt you,” Buono said. Even in Edmontons loss in Winnipeg they ran the ball 18 times for 87 yards. “Up until Montreal weve been fairly balanced, about 40 per cent run,” said head coach Kavis Reed. “I anticipate well continue to be balanced. We have to have a run game to improve our protection, in order to maintain the time of possession weve enjoyed the first five games.” His message to his players this week was not to panic, and “not let any external situations dictate how we handle our business. Were probably going to lose a few more (games), so we have to make sure our temperament stays the same.” The offensive line juggling also continued. Junius Coston (knee) is gone for six to eight weeks, Greg Wojt is still dealing with a knee injury from the Montreal game and veteran Cliff Washburn was released. Brian Ramsey has been working with the first team and newcomers Devin Tyler and Chris Patrick, signed this week, are expected to be the roster. DB Rod Williamss hamstring has kept him out of practice this week and Wopamo Osaisai moves from the practice roster to replace him. Among the many other changes this week, the Eskimos released kick returner Brandon James and linebacker Rico McCoy and signed kicker returner/receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen and offensive lineman Chris Patrick. Téma: Jak postupovat / ree-point arc and his dribble RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes hope they now have the leadership tandem in place to turn the franchise around. Bill Peters was introduced Friday as the Hurricanes new coach, the first big hire made by new Carolina general manager Ron Francis. Now its up to Peters to prove it was shrewd move. Carolina has made three coaching changes since 2006 and has only one playoff appearance to show for it. “When I did my due diligence and went to look at rosters … were not far off,” Peters said. “I think theres lots of pieces here and its up to us and our coaching staff … to max our group out.” He replaces Kirk Muller, who was fired last month — a week into Francis tenure as GM — and went 80-80-27 in three seasons with no playoff berths. Instead of an established NHL head coach or a popular ex-player, Francis went with Peters — a 48-year-old Detroit Red Wings assistant who has never been an NHL head coach but was in demand this off-season. Peters said he interviewed for two other jobs and Francis says he spoke to 10 candidates during “a pretty extensive search,” narrowing that to a three-man short list before deciding on Peters and giving him a three-year contract. “You have to take the time to go through it and make sure you get the right guy,” Francis said, “and thats what we did.” What dazzled Francis was Peters attention to detail: He penned a booklet breaking down the team and brought it to his first interview with them, and his second one included a PowerPoint presentation, Francis said. “Hes extremely, extremely detailed,” Francis said. “Hes going to communicate with our players. Our players are going to know where he stands, and theres no little detail that (will) be overlooked.” From the outside, his challenge looks daunting: Making the Hurricanes a consistent playoff team. Muller couldnt do it in three years. Neither could Paul Maurice, at least during his second stint with the team. Even Peter Laviolette — the only Carolina coach to hoist the Stanley Cup — couldnt get the Hurricanes back in the post-season. Now Peters gets his chance to try to revive a club that has missed the playoffs in seven of the eight years since the Hurricanes won their only Stanley Cup in 2006. The lone post-season berth since that Cup run came in 2009, when the Hurricanes reached the Eastern Conference final in the first year of Maurices second term as coach. Peters plan is to address three glaring problems from last season: Starting games strong, producing more on the power play and winning more often at PNC Arena. Carolina was the leagues third-worst team with the man advantage and was just 18-17-6 at home. “Weve got to become a harder team to play against here in Raleigh,” Peters said. His hiring caps about two months of turbulence in the Hurricanes organization. Francis, a Hall of Fame player who has been both an assistant coach and an assistant GM with Carolina, was moved up a rung on the organizations ladder and his mentor, Jim Rutherford, stepped aside after two decades — and eventually wound up bolting to Pittsburgh to take over as the Penguins GM. Francis first big move came a week later when he fired Muller and put the players on notice that the responsibility for turning the team around is on them, too. After a 46-day search in which some recognizable names were floated, Francis plucked Peters from Mike Babcocks staff with the Red Wings. He spent the past three years working primarily with the Red Wings defencemen and penalty killers. Before joining the Red Wings staff, he coached Rockford of the AHL from 2008-11 and guiding that team to consecutive 40-win seasons. Eight of his Rockford players helped Chicago win the Cup in either 2010 or 2013, and he also coached Spokane (Washington) of the Western Hockey League for three seasons. “This is a guy that knows coaching,” Francis said. ___ Follow Joedy McCreary on Twitter at http://twitter.com/joedyap . – Inbee Park is back defending her No. . He was willing to play on a one-year deal, he was willing to work out a fair price and his only significant requirement was finding another star quarterback who could get him the ball.FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS: 1. DEMAR DEROZAN (Raptors): Hopefully, hes back sooner rather than later. Hell be missed by his team – obviously. Hes such a competitor. After getting hurt the other night, he kept trying to play on his injured foot. He loves the game and Im so impressed with his progress over the years. DeRozan is a mature and serious young man. There is a reason above and beyond his physical ability why hes a good player; he has worked incredibly hard on his skills, his strength and conditioning and is a student of the game. It would be nice to see him make the All Star game. In the meantime, Raptors really need to buckle down defensively and find scoring and consistency in other areas, could be a challenge. Big one tonight here in New York City vs. the red hot Nets. 2. SHAUN LIVINGSTON (Nets): When you watch the Raptors tonight it is always nice to see a guy who has fought back from a devastating injury to have success. When he was a young player with the Clippers, Livingston had a chance to be a special player in this league and then it all got derailed. He has made a difference with Brooklyn, being a sound defender who sets the tone for his team. In the absence of Deron Williams, his leadership was critical for Coach Jason Kidd turning this team around. Not a flashy player yet his smarts, toughness and consistency are a big part why the Nets are surging right now. 3. SPENCER HAWES (Sixers): Hawes has really developed in the past few years into a steady Post player. His rebounding instincts are solid while his back to the basket game has improved. He is also a capable face up shooter. He passes the ball quite well from both the low and high post and is a good fit in a teams attack.dddddddddddd When I saw him as a young player at the University of Washington and when he was on the Sacramento Kings, I didnt envision him to have this upside. Hes really carved out a nice niche in Philly. 4. JAMAAL CRAWFORD (Clippers): Raptor fans got to see first-hand why Crawford is probably the best sixth-man in the NBA right now. He dropped 37 points on them, but more importantly he had an amazing 11 assists as well. What a luxury for Doc Rivers brining him off the bench. He changes the game completely when he comes in. You better check him from behind the three-point arc and his dribble moves are tantalizing. Hes bounced around a lot and Ive never understood why – hes always been a good player. Clips are lucky to have him. Hell steal a playoff game or two for them. 5. AL JEFFERSON (Bobcats): Sure, they spent above market value to get Jefferson but in a market like Charlotte, which has had a rough go of it lately, you have to acquire talent somehow. Hes been a good player for them. 19 points per game and 10-plus rebounds per games as well, while shooting 48 % has really helped their team. Hes in terrific shape and has been quite engaged in the rebuilding process. He plays with a terrific front court partner in Josh McRoberts, who does all the little things while Jefferson racks up the points and boards. If the Bobcats add perimeter shooting, (theyre awful in those categories -bottom eight in field goal and three-point field goal percentage) it will really open things up for their team in future years. You can never have enough shot makers. ’ ’ ’ |

"Som ROME — Francesco Totti scored the opener and Roma went on to beat Udinese 3-2 Monday to maintain its three-point lead over Napoli in the race for Italys last direct Champions League spot. Third-place Napoli had won earlier, with Gonzalo Higuain scoring a controversial goal in the 90th minute of a 1-0 victory at Torino. The top two finishers in Serie A gain direct entry to the Champions League, while the third-place finisher goes into the last playoff round. Napoli beat Roma 1-0 last weekend, although Roma beat its southern rival 2-0 in October and so holds the head-to-head edge. Roma also has a game in hand. “We need to keep this pace until the end of the season,” said Totti, who scored off a rebound from the centre of the area in the 22nd. It was Tottis sixth goal in 16 appearances this season and the 233rd of his Serie A career, second only to record-holder Silvio Piolas 274. The 37-year-old Roma Totti had been out for a month due to a minor injury. Mattia Destro added another for Roma in the 30th, dribbling by the goalkeeper and shooting into an empty net after collecting a pass from Gervinho. Giampaolo Pinzi pulled one back for Udinese in the 51st with a long, angled shot and then Romas Greece defender Vasilis Torosidis restored the two-goal lead in the 69th with a long left-footed effort that appeared to surprise the defence |
