Téma: Jak postupovat / tanley Cup-champion team and b PANAMA CITY – Mexicos Carlos Ortiz won the Panama Claro Championship on Sunday for his first Web.com Tour title, closing with a 6-under 64 for a four-stroke victory. The 22-year-old former North Texas player finished at 12-under 268 at Panama Golf Club and earned $112,500 to jump from seventh to second on the money list with $171,500. “I still cant believe it,” Ortiz said. “I started kind of shaky. I was pretty nervous, I can admit it. … I knew if I could shoot under par I would have a chance. The only thing I wanted was to have a chance on the back nine. I had it and I took it.” His earnings total should be more than enough to guarantee a spot on the PGA Tour next season as a top-25 finisher on the money list. “Thats always been a lifetime dream,” Ortiz said. “Its what we all work so hard for.” Jason Gore was second after a 66. Daniel Berger, Derek Fathauer and Aron Price, the second-round leader, tied for third at 7 under. Berger and Fathauer shot 67, and Price had a 70. Alex Cejka, the winner of the season-opening Colombia Championship and second last week in the Brazil Champions, tied for 11th at 4 under after a 69. He earned $13,750 to push his tour-leading total to $235,150. Knuble, 40, returns to the Flyers after spending the past three seasons with the Washington Capitals. He played for the Flyers for four seasons (2005-2009) after signing as a free agent July 3, 2004. Knuble appeared in 310 games for Philadelphia, recording 114 goals and 221 points. “Ill be ready for anything. Im pretty realistic that for a guy like me, youre going to be a spot-filler, going to fill some holes at times, and come in and do whats asked of you, play where you need to play,” Knuble said. “Youre going to go out and try to do your best in that role that night and try to do what you can do. I just need to be ready to move around, probably a lot, and be ready for anything.” The move for Knuble was necessitated by an injury to Flyers forward Scott Hartnell, who is expected to miss four to eight weeks because of a broken left foot. Hartnell, an All-Star last season who finished with 37 goals and 67 points, was injured by a shot taken by teammate Kimmo Timonen in Tuesdays game against New Jersey. Hartnell had one point in three games. “Youre going to need players to play in a short season, a 48-game season like we have. We believe we have depth in our organization,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. “Weve seen some of our young kids up already playing. Were being tested obviously right now, which is good and badd, but wed obviously like to get ourselves healthy because we know were in for a dogfight in what we have left of our schedule.dddddddddddd” The Flyers (1-3) also recalled defenceman Andreas Lilja, 37, from the AHL, and he will be in the lineup as well vs. the Panthers. “Andreas is a good guy; hes got lots of life to his game,” Holmgren said. “I think he was real good for our young players down there (in the AHL). They got a chance to play with a guy whos been on a Stanley Cup-champion team and been around a long time, and shows his enthusiasm and a real good attitude for the game. Hes played well and were happy to have him back.” The Flyers are still without forward Danny Briere (broken left wrist). Holmgren says its 50-50 Briere will be available for this weekends games at Florida and Tampa Bay. Knuble has played in 1,040 career games with Detroit, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, and has 274 goals and 540 points. He won a Stanley Cup with Detroit in 1998. “Its the first time Ive double-dipped for a team, get to come back around and play for an organization. Its a place where I feel very comfortable, the staff, the people you see at the rink every day, you know your way around, you know a few guys in the locker room that were there when you were there,” Knuble said. “Its a great organization and its a place that I kind of had to leave because of salary cap things. I didnt really want to go, and I said that at the time, but its great to have the opportunity to come back.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / as Chicago beat The Olympic break in the NHL schedule will be upon us following the conclusion of ten games on Saturday night and players selected to represent their country will head to Sochi with their sights set on a gold medal. And I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of my experiences gained through International competition and the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Seven NHL referees and six linesmen will be assigned upcoming games in Sochi by the IIHF as part of their 28-man officiating roster comprised of 14 refs and 14 linesmen. Referees Dave Jackson, Mike Leggo, Brad Meir, Tim Peel, Kevin Pollock, Kelly Sutherland and Ian Walsh will be joined by NHL linesmen colleagues Derek Amel, Lonnie Cameron, Greg Devorski, Brad Kovachik, Andy McElman and Mark Wheler. The IIHF has also selected linesmen Chris Carlson and Jesse Wilmot (Canada), along with Chris Woodworth and Tommy George (U.S.A. Hockey) to participate. Congratulations and best of luck to each of the officials selected to participate in this International showcase. The IIHF, represented by President Rene Fasel and Officiating Manager Konstantin Komissarov, or their designates will have already briefed the current crop of officials heading to Sochi with regard to rule differences, security measures, travel procedures and many other important matters that surround the Olympic event. Aside from the fact that it will be mostly business for the refs and linesmen once they arrive in Sochi, it is a much different world today than it was in 1998. As such, the current group of officials was strongly discouraged from having any family members join then for this Olympic event. It will be all business with heightened security measures in place! I recall our meeting with Mr. Rene Fasel at the NHL Offices in Toronto a month or so prior to our departure for Nagano. Since this was to be the first time that professional players and officials were being allowed to participate in the Winter Olympics there was extensive information that we were provided. As we were being brought up to speed on rule differences Mr. Fasel, stated that all referees and linesmen were required to wear a helmet and visor! My colleague Ray Scapinello raised his hand and said, “Mr. Fasel I dont wear a helmet let alone a visor.” The IIHF President addressed Scapinello directly and informed him if he didnt wear a helmet and a visor he would not be working in the Olympics. Scampy immediately responded with, “My helmet size is 7 1/4 – thank you, sir.” Those of us that didnt wear a helmet or visor put one in the last week or two of NHL games in an effort to adjust. As you can imagine I had a very difficult time with it. The visor gave me the feeling of being in a fishbowl. I tried various products and sizes in an attempt to get comfortable and was struggling with it until Ray Bourque helped me out in a game in Boston. He told me I looked ridiculous in the thing I was wearing and had the Bruins trainer put one of his special Oakley visors on my helmet. If nothing else, the style was more appealing and I wore it during the Olympics. In spite of flying business class to Tokyo from North America, it was a very long haul. We were advised to drink plenty of water (limit alcohol consumption) and to get up and exercise throughout the flight in addition to sleep as much as possible. Our Japanese hosts were fantastic. Upon arrival at Narita Airport we were personally escorted to the Bullet Train. We were then handed a ticket with a seat assignment and escorted to the platform where all passengers waited in a very orderly fashion behind a theatre-style rope. The Bullet Train pulled into the station and passengers disembarked. A cleaning crew dressed smartly in uniform and white gloves marched onto the train in single file with their brooms and dusters placed over their shoulders like rifles. They cleaned the train and then marched off in unison the same way they entered. An attendant removed the clip from the rope restrainer and the customers walked onto the train in a calm and orderly fashion, single file. For all of us that had been pushed and jostled on filthy trains throughout the North American public transit systems (especially the New York subway) this was an amazingly pleasant experience. We rolled into the mountain region of Nagano 24 hours after our flight had departed from North America. We had one day to quickly recover, meet with our IIHF colleagues in a morning skate and then work the games. The extensive travel to get to Sochi will be a challenge for the current group of officials to overcome as well. In a short tournament on the world stage, every game is crucial and the officials feel the pressure and demand to be at their very best. All of us had extensive Stanley Cup playoff experience (including multiple Cup Finals for several of us) but we were the new kids on the block regarding Olympic competition. The camaraderie that was quickly established between the amateur and professional officials in Nagano made for a unified group of zebras. We were able to share our officiating experience and help one another adjust to the bigger ice surface and style of play that we would encounter. We immediately gelled with our International colleagues and became a unified team. It was obvious to me very early in the tournament that the Czechs were going to be a team to be reckoned with. They had many talented players, but unlike their dismal performance in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey where they were individualistic and disjointed, this group appeared united and going for the gold. Their captain, Vladimir “Rosey” Ruzicka (233 NHL games with Edmonton, Boston and Ottawa) hadnt played in the NHL since the 1993-94 season but was performing at an incredibly high level; one that I had never seen from him previously. He was definitely the leader of this Czech team. And of course, they had The Dominator (Dominik Hasek) in goal! I was the backup referee for the gold medal game between Czechoslovakia and Russia. I was seated in the first row of the lower balcony beside my wife Kathy when Bill Wirtz and his wife arrived to occupy the seats beside us. The stairs were extremely steep and as Mr. Wirtz got to the railing he tripped and started to fall forward. I grabbed him by his belt and yanked hard pulling the Blackhawks owner backward into his seat before he fell over the railing. Startled, he look at me and said, “Thanks Kerry, that was a close call!” Just before the opening puck drop, Mr. Wirtz asked me who I thought was going to win the game. I told him the Czech team had really impressed me throughout the Olympics and I thought they stood a real good chance. He said that was good info because he had laid down a large bet in Vegas for the Czech team to win. The reasoning he shared with me was that he had bet against Dominik Hasek once before when he traded the goalie away from the Hawks. Mr. Wirtz said he wasnt going to bet against Hasek this time around! The Dominator shut out the Russian team and the Czechs won the gold medal. We were a tired but jovial bunch that boarded a bus arranged by Sr. V.P. of Hockey Operations Brian Burke to transport us from Nagano back to Tokyo following the gold medal game. And Burkie was busy snapping pictures of everyone as for his Nagano album. Following a brief sleep in the airport hotel, we boarded an early morning flight back home. Our stay at home was extremely short because the referees had to all fly to Toronto early the next morning for a meeting that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman insisted we attend. While we were in Nagano, the Commissioner had us craft a document with referee-in-chief Bryan Lewis in an attempt to solve the ongoing obstruction crisis in the NHL. As such, we had to jump on a plane and attend a referees-only meeting. Fortunately, those of us that had worked the Olympics were given a week off to recover from the jet lag. The meeting held in Toronto didnt prove all that productive since it wasnt until 2006 that a meaningful difference resulted in dealing with obstruction! The Olympic experience is a highlight of everyones career, whether as a player or as an official. I am quite sure the group working in Sochi will feel the same way. Best of luck boys and above all, please remain safe! No matter what, they can always count on David West. With the top-seeded Pacers poised for an early summer, West fearlessly led a 16-4 run to end the game, extending the season with a 95-88 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday night. “Hes our rock,” Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. “Theres no other way to put it.” Trailing 3-2 after losing at home for the second time in the best-of-seven series, Indiana was in big trouble when the Hawks pushed out to an 84-79 lead with just over 3 minutes remaining, cheered on by a raucous crowd that barely sat down in the second half. But, for the fourth time in this back-and-forth affair, the road team won. West seemed to make every big play down the stretch, scoring four straight points and forcing a huge turnover to begin the turnaround. He hit two more baskets in the final minute to wrap things up, finishing with 24 points. Game 7 is Saturday in Indianapolis. “When a team is making runs like that, an eight seed trying to knock off a one seed in their building and the place is erupting on every play, we have a guy with the composure to settle everyone down,” Vogel said. Paul George also scored 24 points for the Pacers, making four straight free throws to help fend off a team that was trying to become only the sixth No. 8 seed to win a playoff series. The Pacers went with a smaller-than-usual lineup much of the game, hoping to match up better with Atlanta spreading the court and shooting a bunch of 3-pointers. Roy Hibbert remained the starting centre, but played only about 12 minutes for the second game in a row. Ian Mahinmi played nearly twice as long, giving Indiana more mobility in the lane, while C.J. Watson and Chris Copeland also got extensive minutes. It worked. Atlanta bogged down offensively and made only 9-of-35 from beyond the arc. “We tried some different lineups,” West said. “Coach rolled the dice.” West came up big all over the court, also leading the Pacers with 11 rebounds and six assists, not to mention a couple of steals. “I told the guys, If worse comes to worse, weve got to play park baskeetball,” he said.dddddddddddd Atlanta, playing perhaps its biggest home playoff game since the 1980s, looked as if it was on the verge of a huge celebration when the defence sagged and Jeff Teague knocked down a jumper with 3:16 to go. But, led by West, the Pacers showed some of the resolve theyve lacked in a late-season swoon. After swishing a pair of free throws, he hustled back to swat the ball away from Atlantas Pero Antic. Making sure Indiana took advantage of the turnover, West calmly made a jumper from the top of the key. Paul Millsap missed at the other end, and George Hill burst into the lane to drop one in. Just like that, the Pacers were back up 85-84 with 1:58 remaining. Antic tied it for the final time, 85-all, on a free throw with 1:24 remaining. But that was it for the Hawks. West hit another jumper to put the Pacers ahead for good. Then, coming off a timeout, Lou Williams drove under the basket and tried to throw an outlet pass to Teague; instead, the ball went right to George. He was immediately fouled, made both free throws, and Teague missed again for the Hawks after a brilliant night to seal it for the Pacers. Teague scored 29 points, nearly pulling out a victory on a night when Atlanta shot just under 36 per cent. “Nobodys going to lay down and just allow their season to be over with,” Williams said. “Especially with the type of basketball team that they are. I think they just did a great job of just fighting at that three-minute mark and made the plays that we didnt.” The bruising series nearly turned ugly near the end of the first half. Scott doled out an elbow to Hill, and the Pacers guard responded with a shove. The refs jumped in quickly and no punches were thrown. After initially calling a foul on Hill, the officials got together and changed it to Scott. The crowd booed lustily, but it appeared to be the correct call. Replays appeared to show a couple of Indiana players stepping beyond the bench area, but they didnt get involved and Vogel said he didnt expect any discipline from the league for Game 7. Notes: Millsap and Williams were the only other Atlanta players in double figures, both with 16 points. … Lance Stephenson scored 21 points for the Pacers. … Millsap had 18 rebounds. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / uthentic-brett-favre-kids-j TORONTO — Calling it a tale of two seasons, Toronto FC players and coaches say the Major League Soccer team is headed in the right direction despite again missing the playoffs. Under new coach Aron Winter and assistant Bob de Klerk, Toronto finished with a 6-13-15 record, but showed signs of promise as the season ended. The MLS side also turned heads by qualifying for the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League. Still, Toronto fans have yet to see a post-season appearance in the clubs five-year history. Winter fell short of saying its playoffs or bust in 2012, but pointed to the teams improvement in the second half of the season. “We are on the right track but we are not still there,” the Dutch coach said Monday as the team met the media for a post-mortem. “Next season were going to start from the beginning to give everything to get at least into the playoffs,” Winter added. “But we always say we are here not for the short-term, we are here for the long-term … we are still building.” It was up to goalkeeper Stefan Frei to call a spade a spade. “Its been (a year) of transition again,” he said. "Obviously a lot of changes throughout the season. “You might even want to split the season up in two — obviously almost two different teams. But I think what the team has achieved throughout the second half of the season has been good progress and thats I think what weve been looking for.” But Frei, who lost his starting job while injured, was not about to give the 2011 season a thumbs-up. “Im not going to go to bed with a smile either,” he said. “Although a lot of people thought this season was going to be just (about) progression, getting better, our goal was to reach the playoffs and we failed at that.” In January, Winter and de Klerk took over a franchise that seemingly had gone backwards. They came in with a vision, introducing the Dutch concept of “total football” where every position has a designated role. “I remember the first couple of games it was almost like them speaking another language,” midfielder Julian de Guzman said. "And no one really understood what they wanted from each individual. “I think thats why they were forced to make certain changes at the midpoint of the season. Now that theyve got the guys that they want, it feels more like a team. Everyone comprehends the system very well and, at the same time, theyre getting better at it.” Winter essentially remade the roster in July. He brought in designated players Torsten Frings and Danny Koevermans and seven others. In all, Toronto used some 40 players in 2011. Winter and Paul Mariner, director of player development, say they still have holes to fill. Central defence remains a worry after season-ending injuries to Adrian Cann and Dicoy Williams and a league-worst 59 goals against. “Just the way that we played —so open,” said Ty Harden, who soldiered on valiantly with Andy Iro at centre back. “We lost the ball too easily too many times. To (the point) where teams were just flying at us.” Every set piece was a defensive adventure. “All I really know is we gave up a lot of goals on set pieces,” Harden said. “Obviously if we knew exactly why or how to fix it we would have done that already. Its obviously something we talked about a lot. Obviously we couldnt, for whatever reason, fix it.” Frings was dropped back as a sweeper to help steady the creaky backline. The team needs more depth, with de Klerk saying only once during the season did the coaching staff have a discussion on who to play in the No. 10 shirt. The team braintrust is able to point to the start of construction of Torontos new training ground. Academy graduates like Ashtone Morgan, Matt Stinson and Doneil Henry have been success stories this season. Forward Ryan Johnson has been a fine, unsung pickup and teenage Ecuador forward Joao Plata has proved to be a “difference-maker,” in de Klerks words. It has two goalies in Frei and Milos Kocic who have both shown they are good enough to start. The two are friends, rooming together on the road, but the team may look to move one to pick up another asset. While the two were diplomatic about the starting role Monday, it seems clear they dont both expect to be here next season. Frings, a former German international, has proved to be a leader on the pitch and a role model off it, according to the team. Koevermans scored eight goals in 10 games, proving to be a big Dutch goal machine. “During the last three months we played some good games,” said Koevermans. De Guzman regained his fitness after a troublesome knee injury and was beginning to show his influence on the pitch as the season ended. Winter and De Klerk says the leagues intricate roster and salary rules will not be as foreign to them next season. “Were under no illusions that weve got more work to do,” said Mariner. Making Plata and fullback Richard Eckersleys loan status is high on his to do list. Both say they want to be back. Téma: Jak postupovat / :30 to go before Markieff Morris three MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Grizzlies ratcheted up their defence to avoid a back-to-back sweep by the two best teams in the Eastern Conference. And, in the meantime, Memphis kept its spot in the Western Conference playoff race. Mike Conley scored 21 points, Zach Randolph added 18 points and 13 rebounds, and the Grizzlies held the Indiana Pacers to their lowest output of the season in an 82-71 victory on Saturday night. Several Grizzlies players said it may have been their most complete game of the season. The victory came after Memphis lost 91-86 at Miami on Friday night. “It started from the defensive intensity, and it was consistent,” Conley said. “On offence, we moved the ball well. We were efficient with it, but defensively, we really locked down and communicated.” Mike Miller added 13 points as Memphis moved a game ahead of Phoenix for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Marc Gasol, returning after spraining his ankle Friday night, had 10 points and nine rebounds. Lance Stephenson led the Pacers with 15 points and eight rebounds, while David West added 10 points, but was 5 of 15 from the field. Paul George, the Pacers leading scorer at 22.1 points per game, was held to eight points, missing eight of his 10 shots, and Indiana shot 37 per cent for the game. “We couldnt score at all,” said Pacers centre Roy Hibbert, who was in foul trouble and ended the night with four points and no rebounds. “Thats the basic thing. I think we had a lot of contested 2s. Guys were trying, and they were playing hard, but for some reason, something was a little off.” Indiana, which allows a league-low 35.4 points per game in the paint, surrendered 46 to Memphis, which also outrebounded Indiana 47-35. The Pacers only lead in the game came at 3-2. Gasol, who was treated for a Grade 1 left ankle sprain sustained in Fridays loss to the Heat, was a game-time decision. He was on medication and didnt warm up before the game. “I wanted to save every step I was going to take for the game,” said Gasol, adding that the medication made it where he could barely feel his hands or face. “It definitely helped the purpose, and made it worth it because we won the game.” Memphis, which built a double-digit lead in the first half, maintained the advantage through the third period as the Pacers seemed to be dragging. Through three periods, Indiana was still under 37 per cent, and George had been limited to only seven shots and six points. “Its the offensive end where we didnt play well,” George said. “We didnt get into a rhythm. . If you hold a team to 82 points, you are playing pretty good defence.” Memphis continued to maintain the double-digit lead, keeping the Pacers down 10 to 14 points through most of the fourth. “We were a little bit too indecisive and hesitant with the basketball,” Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. “We had poor shooting nights from a number of guys.” As was expected with two of the best defensive teams in the league, the first half was a low scoring affair despite Memphis shooting 46 per cent. The Pacers were at 32 per cent. That helped Memphis carry a 43-30 lead into the break as Miller connected on four of his first five shots in the second period, all of them from outside the arc, for all of his 13 points in the game. “If you take away Mike Millers 3s in the first half, this is a college score in terms of the game.” West said. But the Grizzlies said the performance was important after a Miami game they thought they could have won. They also mentioned that it was an important confidence-builder for the stretch run. “We were in attack mode most of the night on both offence and defence,” Memphis coach Dave Joerger said. “That is as complete of a win as we have had all season.” NOTES: Pacers C Andrew Bynum remained inactive for the fourth game with swelling and soreness in his right knee. …The previous low for points in a game for Indiana was 73 against Dallas on Feb. 12. … Indianas three-game win streak against the Grizzlies was snapped. .Memphis has won nine straight at home. .The Pacers lost for only the second time this season when holding an opponent under 90 points. He did it again on Wednesday night. The 36-year-old Ginobili scored 11 of his 24 points in the final four-plus minutes, and the Spurs snapped the Suns five-game winning streak with a 108-101 victory. Phoenixs Channing Frye said hes seen Ginobili do this sort of thing “a trillion times.” “Its like a bad nightmare,” he said. “Hes absolutely amazing. He just does a good job of continuing to push. I thought he was getting tired there at the end. Obviously, I was wrong.” Tim Duncan added 17 points and 13 rebounds and Kawhi Leonard scored 14 for the Spurs, who played without point guard Tony Parker after he bruised a shin in Monday nights loss to the Clippers in Los Angeles. Frye scored 15 of his 22 points in the first quarter. Goran Dragic had 18 points and Eric Bledsoe 15, but the two Phoenix guards were a combined 12 of 33 from the field. Miles Plumlee added 13 points and 13 rebounds. Led by Ginobili, the Spurs outscored the Suns 15-6 over the final 4:11 after Phoenix used a 10-0 run to take a 95-93 lead on Plumlees rebound basket with 5:10 to go. “These guys are a good team,” Phoenix coach Jeff Hornacek said, praising San Antonios resiliency. “It doesnt matter if guys are out of the lineup.” Ginobili had a tying tip-in, and then made a 3-pointer to put San Antonio ahead for good at 98-95 with 2:58 to play. San Antonio put it out of reach when Ginobili sank a 10-footer from the baseline, and then stole the ball at the other end and made two free throws to make it 104-97 with 47.5 seconds remaining. “Down the stretch I thought we did look like a veteran team,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. Ginobili, who also had seven assissts, six rebounds and five turnovers, gave himself a so-so grade.dddddddddddd. “I played pretty well,” he said. “I turned the ball over too much but in general the minutes I played I scored well and I moved the ball. I think I did OK. Im very happy that I helped the team win because we are in a tough stretch. We lost the last one, we have a tough back-to-back without Tony and then Oklahoma City.” Parker will miss Thursday nights game at Golden State and its uncertain whether he will be able to play when the Spurs host the Thunder on Saturday. Leonards 3-pointer gave San Antonio its first lead at 46-45. There were five lead changes the rest of the first half, with San Antonio up 59-58 at the break. With 4 seconds left in the third, Dragic was fouled while heaving a shot from just past midcourt and Popovich drew a technical complaining about the call. That gave Dragic four free throws. He made three to cut San Antonios lead to 87-81 entering the fourth quarter. Consecutive baskets by Marco Belinelli and Patty Mills put San Antonio ahead 93-85 with 8:30 to go before Markieff Morris three-point play ignited the Suns 10-0 run. “We know that we can play well against good teams,” Dragic said. “We are a young team and we have to learn a lot, especially in these types of games where, in the last three or four minutes, you have to close out the game, and I think we can get there.” NOTES: Parker has returned to San Antonio for treatment. … San Antonio has not lost two in a row this season. … Popovich is the only NBA coach whose tenure dates to Hornaceks playing days. … Bledsoe was 1-for-8 shooting in the fourth quarter. … Entering the game, Duncans career minutes (42,064) were 37 more than the 13 players on Phoenixs active roster combined. … Phoenix has not won six in a row in three years. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / on six of the pr VANCOUVER — The biggest knock against Gershon Koffie with the Vancouver Whitecaps has been his consistency. An imposing presence in midfield, the Ghanaian would be the best player on the pitch one game and virtually invisible the next. After starting the 2014 campaign on the bench, Koffie has finally begun to live up to expectations on a daily basis, and both he and the Whitecaps have one of the teams new acquisitions at least partly to thank. Toronto FC dealt Matias Laba to Vancouver right before the start of the season and the Argentine midfielder has slotted seamlessly into the centre of rookie head coach Carl Robinsons formation. The workhorse not only cleans up danger in front of the Whitecaps defence, he also allows Vancouvers attacking players to push forward — with Koffie being one of the main beneficiaries thus far. The 22-year-old scored from 40 yards out after pouncing on a goalkeeping error in last weekends 2-2 draw with the Seattle Sounders, and had three other clear-cut chances, including a shot that rattled the crossbar in the games opening minutes. “Gersh has got incredible attributes. Hes got the physical strength. When he makes a tackle and he means it, no ones going to beat him. Hes really that powerful,” Whitecaps assistant coach Martyn Pert said Thursday. "The consistency part of the game is still something that hes got to really work hard at, and hes getting there, thats four or five games on the spin now hes been very good. “Hes got to keep it going, keep the foot on the pedal and keep driving.” Robinson favoured Nigel Reo-Coker in the centre of midfield at the start of the season, but after the Englishman was injured in an off-field incident the Whitecaps turned to Koffie. “I dont think I was disappointed to be on the bench, but that motivated me,” said Koffie, whose goal against Seattle was his first of the season. “I have to embrace it because my fellow mates were doing well and it was a coachs decision.” Koffie — who has already played 93 games in his Major League Soccer career — said Robinson has asked him to go forward more in his attack-minded system, and credits Laba with allowing him that freedom to roam. “Playing with Matias Laba gives me the license to go forward and get some chances,” said Koffie. “I know hes there to work the defensive part and delay (opponents) before we can get back in (formation).” Labas tenacity has also rubbed off on his midfield counterpart, who tracked back on more than one occasion against Seattle to help out Vancouvers back line. “(Labas) a guy who sets the tone,” said Koffie. “If you play next to him, he goes in for tackles (and) you have to do the same. If he goes in chasing the ball, you have to do the same, because you cant let him do the job (alone).” Also just 22, Laba was a casualty of Toronto FCs winter spending spree, with the club unable to retain the designated player it acquired last season. “I didnt expect it, but I think its for the best,” Laba said through an interpreter. “Im very happy in Vancouver with a great coach and teammates.” Although he often takes care of the less-glamorous tasks on the field, the Whitecaps have come to appreciate his tireless work. “Mati gives us a great dimension to build off of at the back,” said Vancouver captain Jay DeMerit. “He lets the guys that are creative express themselves a little bit more, just by giving you a little bit more of a lockdown defensively.” Added the selfless Laba: “Ive always played that way — win balls, win tackles — and quickly disperse (passes) so my teammates have more time on the ball.” Pert has been in awe at how quickly Laba has adapted to his new surroundings. “Matis been incredible since hes come in and the fact he came in two weeks before the start of the season and every game he just never lets you down,” said Pert. "Hes absolutely a top, top player. I couldnt speak highly enough of Mati. “He makes incredible tackles, he gets his foot on the ball, he plays it simple.” Because of their youth, Laba and Koffie could be patrolling Vancouvers midfield for some time, and the pair are expected to start alongside each other once again when the Whitecaps (4-2-5) visit the Portland Timbers (3-3-7) on Sunday. “(Koffies) a great player and I think we work really well together,” said Laba. “I can win balls and that opens space up for him to go forward and attack more. We compliment each other quite well.” . PAUL, Minn. Irving scored 23 points and the Cavaliers won back-to-back games for the first time this season with a 98-88 victory over Denver Wednesday night. Tristan Thompson had a career-high 21 rebounds and 17 points for Cleveland, which handed Denver its first loss since Nov. 18. The Nuggets played the third game of a six-game road trip, which began with a 14-point win in Toronto on Sunday and a 24-point victory in Brooklyn on Tuesday. “They just whupped us tonight,” Denver coach Brian Shaw said. “They looked like the fresher team and they were quicker to the punch.” Randy Foye led Denver with 16 points, while J.J. Hickson had 15 points and 11 rebounds, but the Nuggets couldnt contend with Clevelands balanced attack. Anderson Varejao scored a season-high 18 points and had 13 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who recorded their largest margin of victory this season. While the Nuggets have been one the leagues hottest teams, the Cavaliers have struggled to adjust to new coach Mike Browns system. Cleveland already has lost seven games by double figures, but a win over Chicago on Saturday and its latest victory produced some confidence. “Winning is the thing that cures everything,” Brown said. “We came out aggressive on both ends of the floor and thats what coach Brown has been preaching,” Irving said. “Its paying dividends. It starts with the way we practice and carries over into games.” Denver trailed by 12 points in the second quarter, but finished the first half on a 10-2 run and cut the lead to two early in the third period. The Nuggets got no closer, however, as the Cavaliers stretched the lead to double figures. The margin reached 13 early in the fourth. Andrew Bynum, coming off his best game of the season, had 14 points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes. The 7-footer had 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocked shots Saturday against the Bulls in a 97-93 win. Bynum, Thompson and Varejao combined for 41 of Clevelands 58 rebounds. “They were monsters in the pick-and-roll,” Brown said. “They were monsters on the glass. They were monsters around the rim. It was awesome to watch.” Thompson had nine rebounds in nine minutes in the first quarter. He had 11 points and 13 rebounds in the first half. “Tristan Thoompson had his season averages at halftime,” Shaw said.dddddddddddd “This was a good lesson for our bigs. When youre playing against bigger guys like him and Bynum, youve got to put a body on them.” Despite being 6-12, the Cavaliers havent fallen too far from the pack in the Eastern Conference, where only Indiana and Miami are over .500. “Thats the good thing about being in the East right now and Im sure every other team feels the same, but we truly believe we havent played our best basketball,” Brown said. “Contrary to what anybody believes I do feel like were getting better.” Nate Robinson scored 14 points and Wilson Chandler added 13 for the Nuggets. Denver got off to a slow start playing its third game in four nights. The Cavaliers led by seven points on several occasions in the first quarter and stretched the lead to 12 in the second. Cleveland led 54-42 with 1:51 remaining in the second, but Denver scored 10 of the halfs final 12 points, highlighted by Lawsons three-point play, a 3-pointer by Foye and four points by Darrell Arthur. Lawsons basket accounted for his first points of the game. He came into Wednesday averaging a team-high 20.2 points, but finished with four points on 1-of-13 shooting. “I feel like I missed all easy shots,” said Lawson, who had 11 assists. “I aint never shot 1 for 13 before in my life.” Bynum was given a flagrant foul for hitting Hickson in the shoulder in the third quarter while the Denver forward was driving to the basket. The Nuggets had won six of the previous seven meetings with the Cavaliers and three straight on the road. Denver reserve centre Timofey Mozgov had eight points and three rebounds in 17 minutes one night after grabbing a career-high 20 rebounds to go with 17 points against the Nets. He totalled 33 points and 35 rebounds against Brooklyn and Toronto. NOTES: Robinson played despite re-injuring his right wrist Tuesday. X-rays after the game were negative. SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Golden State Warriors have made another move in hopes of finding a reliable backup to point guard Stephen Curry. The Warriors acquired Steve Blake from the Los Angeles Lakers for reserve guards Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks on Wednesday night, adding a veteran ball-handler to their beleaguered bench. Word of the deal started to spread just before the Warriors played in Sacramento and the Lakers hosted Houston, with the three players involved saying goodbye to teammates and coaches in the locker room. Both teams confirmed the trade before halftime of their games. “We think this just bolsters the bench and gives us some more options, some more weapons and a player when you give him the ball you know you can trust him,” Warriors general manager Bob Myers said during intermission in Sacramento. “We just think it was a chance to improve our roster and that was our justification.” The trade gives Golden State a savvy veteran off the bench without sacrificing any of its core players or moving into the leagues luxury tax. The Warriors used a $4 million trade exception they got in the deal with Denver that landed free agent Andre Iguodala last summer. The team is about $400,000 under the luxury tax, Myers said. The Warriors were hoping Blake would be uniform when they host Houston on Thursday night in Oakland. Blake, who is making $4 million in the final year of his contract, averaged 9.5 points and 7.6 assists while starting all 27 games he playedd for the injury-depleted Lakers this season.dddddddddddd. The Warriors are counting on the 33-year-old veteran to improve a bench that has been searching for a solid ball-handler since Jarrett Jack left for Cleveland in free agency last summer. The Warriors acquired Jordan Crawford and Brooks from Boston in a three-team trade on Jan. 15. Golden State sent struggling backup Toney Douglas to Miami in that deal. Crawford has been, at times, a prolific scorer but is still learning how to be a better distributor and playmaker on a Warriors team that has plenty of shooters. He entered Wednesday averaging 6.3 points and 2.2 assists in his first 13 games with the Warriors after starting for the Celtics while Rajon Rondo was injured. “We like our core, and I think our core likes each other. I think its a core that can win,” Myers said. “And our bench, for whatever reason, struggled early on. Anything we could do to fortify it, we tried to do without removing what we consider our core.” The Lakers received some salary cap relief and a pair of young and unproven players in the deal. Brooks appeared in just seven games with the Warriors and never caught on in Mark Jacksons rotation. Bazemore, best known for his animated cheering on Golden States bench, also struggled in limited action the past two seasons. Both had split time with the teams NBA Development League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors, but should get more of an opportunity with the rebuilding Lakers. ’ ’ ’ |

INDIANAPOLIS — Paul George and Lance Stephenson combined for 43 points and the Indiana Pacers remained unbeaten in the young season with an 89-74 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday night. Stephenson scored 22 points, including 10 in a 14-4 run midway through the fourth quarter that gave the Pacers a 79-61 lead with 7:46 to play. George, who had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and scored all the points in a key third-quarter run for Indiana (3-0). Dion Waiters scored 17 points, Kyrie Irving had 15 and Anderson Varejao 14 for Cleveland (1-2), which dropped both ends of a two-night road trip after beginning the season with a homecourt win. Stephenson began the final surge by hitting a 3-pointer from the left side, scored on a layup, drove the lane, then finished the run by knocking down a 28-footer from the left side. That pushed Indianas lead to 18 points, and both coaches substituted liberally. Roy Hibbert added 11 points for the Pacers, who played without guard George Hill, who sat out with a sore left hip. Replacing Hill, who scored 19 points in the Pacers opener, was C.dddddddddddd.J. Watson, who scored seven points and dished out a team-high six assists. Cleveland, which had scored the last six points of the third quarter to pull within 62-55, trailed 65-57 early in the fourth quarter. Stephenson was 7 of 13 from the field, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range. George was 8 of 17 from the field, including 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. George fueled the only real run of the first half, starting with a monster jam with 4:06 to go in the first quarter and finishing the 8-2 surge with two free throws as the Pacers took a 21-16 lead after one quarter. Varejao started out fast for the Cavs, scoring eight points in the first 4:42, but the Pacers began to defend him at the free throw line and he did not score again in the half. The Pacers shot 42 per cent (16 of 38) in the first half to Clevelands 31 per cent (13 of 42) and outrebounded the Cavs 30-25. Cleveland, which shot 29.2 per cent (7 of 24) in the first quarter, improved to 34.9 per cent (29 of 83) for the game. The Pacers finished at 41.6 per cent (32 of 77). Téma: Jak postupovat / o remove his name from c PHOENIX — What was supposed to be the triumphant return of Eric Bledsoe for Phoenix instead was an ugly home loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Kyrie Irving scored 12 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and the Cavaliers snapped a four-game losing streak with a 110-101 victory on Wednesday night. Spencer Hawes added 19, 17 in the first quarter, and Luol Deng scored 18 for Cleveland. Bledsoe, who underwent knee surgery and missed 33 games, had 15 points on 5 for 16 shooting and a team-high nine assists in 32 minutes. “It spoiled everything,” he said of the loss. “It was a team we needed to beat and a game we needed to win, so now its going to make it that much tougher.” Goran Dragic scored 20 points, Markieff Morris 18 and Channing Frye 17 in the Suns third straight loss. Irving also had nine rebounds and six assists for the Cavs, who never trailed, building a 14-point first-quarter lead. “They looked like the team that was trying to get into the playoffs,” Phoenix coach Jeff Hornacek said. “We looked like the team that just wanted to play a basketball game.” Phoenix fell two games behind Memphis and Dallas for the final two playoff spots in the West. The Cavaliers led by as many as 20 at home before falling to Phoenix earlier this season. But they held off a Phoenix rally this time. “A lot of huge contributions from a lot of our guys, especially from the three-point line,” Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. Cleveland led by 15 in the opening minutes of the third quarter but the Suns, behind Dragics 11 third-quarter points, cut it to two twice late in the period, the last time on Gerald Greens 11-footer in the lane that made it 77-75 with 35.9 seconds left. But after the teams traded baskets, Dion Waiters made a 3 at the buzzer to put Cleveland up 82-77 entering the fourth. It was part of a 12-2 run that gave the Cavaliers an 89-77 lead on Irvings 18-footer with 10:15 to play. Greens steal and breakaway dunk cut it to 89-81, but Irving scored eight, including two 3s, in a 9-3 spurt and the Cavs led 98-84 with 6:33 left. Green, who had averaged 26 points in his previous five games, scored eight on 4 of 14 shooting, 0 for 6 from 3-point range as the Suns went 10 for 36 from beyond the arc to Clevelands 12 of 24. The Cavs outrebounded Phoenix 51-36. The Suns also struggled from the foul line, going 13 of 22 to Clevelands 22 of 27. Hawes scored 17 in the first quarter, including 3 of 3 3-pointers, as Cleveland took a 37-24 lead. “They were sinking back and just letting me walk into some on the trail so I took advantage of that,” he said. It was the highest-scoring first quarter of the season for the Cavaliers. “I dont know what it is with us in these first quarters,” Dragic said. “We played better (after that) but you use up so much energy trying to come back.” Phoenix never got closer than nine in the second quarter. Markieff Morris scored inside to make it 46-37, but Tristan Thompson made a 6-footer and Deng made a 3 and Cleveland led 51-37 with 4:01 left in the half. The Cavs were up 60-47 at the break, outrebounding the Suns 25-13 and making 8 of 11 3s to Phoenixs 5 of 18 in the first two quarters. CLEVELAND — Mike Pettine got a second look from the Browns, who could be zeroing in on their next coach. Buffalos defensive co-ordinator had his second interview with Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner on Tuesday night, a person familiar with the Browns plans told The Associated Press. The meeting took place in Mobile, Ala., site of the Senior Bowl, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team is not commenting during its search. Pettine is the first candidate to meet twice with the Browns. He spent four hours with Haslam, Banner and other members of Clevelands front office but was not offered the job. Pettine had impressed the Browns during his first interview last week, and club officials flew to meet with him again — a strong sign of their interest. However, the person familiar with the teams plans said the Browns left Mobile and had another interview lined up for Wednesday. The Browns are in the fourth week of their search for their seventh full-time coach since 1999. Pettine just completed his first year with the Bills, and he improved the teams defence in every statistical category. Though the Bills still struggled against the run, they finished second in the NFL with a franchise-record 57 sacks. The 47-year-old Pettine spent four seasons as a defensive co-ordinator under Rex Ryan with the New York Jets before joining the Bills. Pettine also has worked as an assistant in Baltimore. Bills Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas hopes Pettine stays put. “Hey .Browns leave our DC alone,” Thomas posted on his Twitter account. Earlier, Adam Gase, Denvers highly regarded offensive co-ordinator, called Haslam and informed him he was withdrawing his name and would not interview after the Super Bowl. The 35-year-old Gase, who will lead the Broncos high-powered offence against Seattle, was the first candidate contacted by the Browns after they fired Rob Chudzinski following a 4-12 season. Gase declined an initial interview request because he wanted to concentrate on the playoffs, and the Browns would have had to wait until after Feb. 2 to speak with him. Haslam said last week the team is “preparedd to wait as long as necessary” to hire a coach, and the Browns quickly moved ahead without Gase, who enjoys his role with the Broncos and may not be ready for a head coaching gig.dddddddddddd The Browns are the only team without a head coach and have interviewed at least eight known candidates — the list is still growing — to become their fourth coach in the past six years. Besides Pettine, the team has set up a second interview with Seattle defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn. The 43-year-old Quinn, who presided over the NFLs top-rated defence this season, met with the Browns on Jan. 1. Per NFL rules, the Browns can conduct a second interview with Quinn by Sunday, but are not permitted to offer him a job until after the Seahawks season is over. Gase drew the Browns attention and soared up their wish list of candidates after helping quarterback Peyton Manning shatter several league records this season. Also, Haslam received a glowing recommendation on Gase from Manning, who has a long-standing relationship with the Haslam family because of their Tennessee ties. Gase, too, fit the outline — young, offensive-minded — of the type of coach Banner wanted to bring to the Browns, who have lost at least 11 games in each of the past six seasons. Gase is the second high-profile coach to remove his name from consideration. New England offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels also told the Browns he was not interested in pursuing their opening. The Browns also have interviewed former Tennessee coach Mike Munchak and Dallas special teams co-ordinator Rich Bisaccia, and both be brought back for second meetings. The team also plans to meet with Atlanta offensive co-ordinator Dirk Koetter. San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh said he has been contacted by the Browns about members of his staff. Cleveland may want to interview defensive line coach Jim Tomsula or offensive co-ordinator Greg Roman. Harbaugh would not confirm which coaches Cleveland asked about and was reluctant to offer much information. “To go into any further detail, I dont think helps our situation, their situation,” he said. “Their search is their search.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / on one count of aggrava CALGARY — Calgary Flames rookie sensation Sean Monahan will miss at least the next two games with a hairline fracture in his foot and defenceman Dennis Wideman will be out longer with a fractured hand. The Flames said the 19-year-old Monahans status is week to week. The team also announced Thursday that Wideman fractured his left hand in the previous nights 3-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. Both players have been placed on the teams injured reserve list. Wideman will undergo surgery to have a pin placed in the hand and will be out six to eight weeks, according to general manager Jay Feaster. Calgary (8-12-4) is on the road in Anaheim on Friday and in Los Angeles on Sunday. With nine goals and six assists, Monahan is second in NHL rookie scoring behind Thomas Hertl of the San Jose Sharks. Monahan is also second in Flames scoring. He took a shot off the foot in practice Nov. 21, but played in Calgarys next two games. Monahan scored his ninth goal of the season against the Blackhawks, but his foot continued to be painful. A scan Thursday confirmed the fracture. “He will be re-evaluated at the beginning of next week and well have a better idea exactly what the time frame will be,” Feaster told reporters Thursday. “Its certainly not good news when these things happen. To lose a guy like Wideman thats a tough blow for the team. Obviously with Monny, the way Monnys been playing, its a tough guy to take out of your lineup.” The injury bug has bitten the Flames hard this season. Captain and top defenceman Mark Giordano hasnt played since he broke his ankle during a game Oct. 21. He has started skating again and Feaster is hopeful the captain will be ready to play next week. Forward Curtis Glencross is out two to three weeks with a knee injury and forward T.J. Galiardi is day to day with back spasms. “Weve lost some significant players for a significant period of time,” Feaster said. "Its important they dont become an excuse. Theyre not a crutch, no pun intended, to lean on. “You try and find a way to soldier on. We have to find ways to win games with the guys we do have.” The Flames have called up forward Max Reinhart and Paul Byron from their American Hockey League affiliate in Abbotsford, B.C. The very nature of the sport makes it difficult – some might say near impossible – to keep players united during a work stoppage because work stoppages are always about making sacrifices in the short term to benefit in the long. And for a great number of players in a sport with short careers and non-guaranteed contracts, there is no long term. But perhaps even more difficult to overcome is the fact that in football a small number of players on every team are paid far more than the rest, especially the large number of players on every team who will earn at or near the league minimum. And it is those star players, who already enjoy the biggest paydays and the most job security, wholl gain the most as the result of a successful work action. Look at any roster in either the CFL or NFL and youll probably be surprised to earn how many players are earning at or near the league minimum, which this NFL season will ranges between $420,000 and $645,00 for players from zero to three years of service in the league. In the CFL, that figure will go from $45,000 to $50,000 for this season based on what the parties have agreed to so far during current CBA negotiations. Since payrolls for CFL teams arent public, lets use an NFL team as an example to illustrate the payroll dynamics in pro football, which are similar in both leagues, albeit on a different scale. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers enters this season with an average salary of $22 million, nearly double that of anyone else on the team. Among Packers currently under contract, there are only four with an average salary of more than $7 million season, and another four at more than $4 million. There are eight players listed at between $2 million and $4 million, and 67 whose average salary is less than $1 million, 49 of whom are due to earn less than $600,000. The numbers in the CFL are obviously smaller but the manner in which they compare to one another is similar, with star quarterbacks earning roughly $500,000 per season while a large portion of each roster earns less than $60,000 per season. The truth is that whatever gains are made for the players in either league usually mean the rich will get richer. For example, the NFL will operate this season with a salary cap of $133 million dollars. But if that figure was suddenly increased to $200 million, the primary beneficiaries would be the Peyton Mannings, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Bradys and Richard Shermans of the world, while the leaggues rank and file would essentially remain un affected.dddddddddddd Same thing in the Canadian Football League – where if the CFLPA were to get its wish and have the salary cap jump immediately from $4.4 million to $5.8, the benefits would go to players such Ricky Ray, Darian Durant and the rest of the players whom fans pay to see. Of course theres another dynamic in the CFL game that doesnt exist south of the border. And thats that starting Canadian players – the ones mandated by the leagues quota system – also stand to benefit handsomely from any increase because of the laws of supply and demand. But the question becomes how do you convince the great number of players earning at or near the league minimum – young American players or backup Canadians – to commit to a work stoppage when theres little or no chance many of them will benefit from it? Standing up for a much higher minimum salary might help boost support among the rank and file, but that never seems to be the priority in either league. And therein lies the challenge of trying to keep a union full of professional football players all on the same page during a negotiating process. Consider that, despite having the leverage of being able to shut down the most profitable sport in North America, NFL players werent much interested in testing the resolve of their membership by missing paycheques when the league locked out its players during the off-season three years ago. They settled before that could happen. In Canada, the CFLPA has made a lot of noise about being disappointed in the leagues various offers this spring. But it hasnt said anything about having all of its membership on side, or being unbreakable, or being willing to miss game cheques in order to reach their goals in negotiation. The truth is that if the CFLPA were to strike a portion of the season, a great number of players will never get that money back – even if the owners were to capitulate completely. Many would simply be out of the league before they could benefit or would be left to watch the windfalls go to star players while they continue to earn similar amounts. All of these dynamics play to the owners advantage. And in the CFL, where were talking about players needing money to simply pay for the cost of living, the advantage is even greater. Will we see a CFL players strike later this month? Perhaps while its just training camp being missed, when no one has to make a true financial sacrifice to benefit the group for the long term. But in a sport where the rewards of such an action are likely to wind up in the hands of a select few, expecting anything more may be asking too much. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / a cut this year and l Every day pretty well, I check out the Blue Jays minor league stats to see whos trending upwards and whos tailing off. Saturday, the boxscore for Double A New Hampshire really caught my eye. Bostons farm club, the Portland Sea Dogs throttled the Fisher Cats right in their own ballpark. It was the most lopsided defeat in franchise history and the biggest shutout loss. That wasnt the biggest story though. It was the young man who started that game for New Hampshire, Aaron Sanchez. Regarded by many as the Blue Jays top pitching prospect, Sanchez didnt get out of the first inning. In fact he didnt even record an out. My first though was that maybe he was injured, but I called the Fisher Cats early Monday morning and was assured Aaron is alright. He just struggled mightily with his command. Sanchezs line was pretty ugly. He faced only six batters, walked four and a hit another, and the only batter to make contact reached on an error by first baseman Mike McDade. Though he didnt give up a single hit, Sanchez was charged with six runs, though only three were earned. Sanchezs entire season so far has been rife with growing pains. Hes 1-3 with a fairly respectable 3.54 ERA. However in just 48.1 innings, hes walked 34 men while hitting another seven versus 41 strikeouts. Its hardly time for the Blue Jays to panic. Sanchez looked great at spring training this year and wont turn 22 until July 1. Still, I wouldnt be looking for a quick call-up to the “Big Club”, if any of the Jays starters falter or get hurt. Sanchez still has a ways to go on the developmental curve. On the flip side of that coin is right hander Deck McGuire. The Jays drafted him number 11 overall in 2010 out of Georgia Tech. In 2012, at Double A, he seemed to hit a wall and had a terrible season. Last year, again at Double A with New Hampshire, he had a bounce-back season and has continued to grow this year with the Fisher Cats. On Saturday after two strong starts with the Fisher Cats, McGuire was promoted to Triple A Buffalo. While not as highly regarded a prospect as Sanchez or Marcus Stroman, the Jays may yet get something out of McGuire, who turns 25 on June 3. After detailing Kyle Drabeks struggles over the past two columns, its only fair to mention how good he was last Thursday at Louisville. He pitched eight shutout innings, striking out five and walking only two in what became a 4-2 victory for the Bisons. Ricky Romero, whose struggles have been epic this season at Buffalo, was due to rejoin the club Monday after spending a few days in California to attend his brothers college graduation. Ricky is pencilled in to start the Memorial weekend holiday Monday game at Indianappolis. The Blue Jays Mark Buehrle is well on his way to a 14th straight season of pitching 200 or more innings. As things stand right now, only three other pitchers have put together a string like that of 15 years or longer. The trio includes Gaylord Perry (15 years), knuckleballer Phil Niekro (15), and lefty Warren Spahn (17). All three are Hall of Famers. They also won over 300 games each. Buehrle (8-1) on the season has 194 wins at age 35. With their recent spurt, including six straight wins, the Blue Jays only have to go 62-49 the rest of the way to finish with 91 victories. Thats a number that should put them in the post-season for the first time since 1993. Around the Majors What in the name of Bobby Valentine has gone wrong with the Red Sox? The defending World Series champs, making like Valentines team of two years ago, have dropped 10 in a row and have been swept in consecutive series by Detroit and the Blue Jays at home and Tampa Bay on the road. Theyre in last place in the AL East, eight games back of the Blue Jays and six games out of the second Wild Card position. On the plus side, Bostons farm system is reputed to be strong, especially at Double A Portland. The Sea Dogs second baseman, Mookie Betts, is a sparkplug speedster who because of the presence of Dustin Pedroia may ultimately wind up in Bostons outfielder sooner rather than later. From the “go figure” file, the Texas Rangers have used a Major League-high 39 players so far this season and have utilized the disabled list 17 times. Yet in the same week they found out that Prince Fielder and Jurickson Profar were gone for the season, the Rangers went into Comerica Park in Detroit and took three out of four from the powerhouse Tigers, outscoring them 35-15. Houstons rookie right fielder George Springer has had his moments defensively, but he is really picking it up at the plate. Hes slugged four homers in the last three games, including two on Sunday to give him seven on the season to go with 22 runs batted in. The Astros though still have the worst record in the Majors at 19-32. Until the other day, I did not know that in his pitching days Babe Ruth threw sidearm. In his relatively brief time on the mound as a full-time starter, he was regarded as the best lefty in the Majors. The best pitcher period, in those days, was Walter Johnson. “The Big Train” also threw sidearm. Makes you wonder why that style barely exists in the Majors today. Maxime Presseaults goal at 13:59 of the second period broke a 2-2 deadlock for the Foreurs, who trailed the series 3-2 before winning back-to-back games, and Guillaume Gelinas and Pierre-Maxime Poudrier also scored. The former prodigy continued her resurgence on the LPGA Tour on Friday, shooting a 5-under 66 to finish a stroke behind leader Hamiltons Alena Sharp after the first round of the NW Arkansas Championship. Wie spent much of her week leading into the tournament busy on the national morning television circuit, only arriving at Pinnacle Country Club on Thursday. Following a practice round and 12 hours of much-needed sleep, the most recognizable name on the LPGA Tour shot a bogey-free 66 on the 6,375 yard layout — closing with a birdie on the par-5 18th and upstaging local favourite Stacy Lewis. “Definitely running on fumes right now,” Wie said. “… I think it definitely struck me on the back nine, a little bit tired, but I just was really excited to get out here and start playing again. New York was fun, but its just fun to get back to playing golf.” Sharp, ranked 234th in the world, had only 27 putts in her opening 65, while Mexicos Alejandra Llaneza matched Wie with a bogey-free 66. The top-ranked Stacy Lewis, who played at the nearby University of Arkansas, was 2 over after four holes before recovering to finish with a 70. Ten players, including major champions So Yeon Ryu and Shanshan Feng, shot 67. Sharp entered this week having missed the cut in six of her 11 LPGA Tour events this year, though she did win the Symetra Tours season-opening event in Arizona in February. She entered the week 137th on the LPGA Tour with an average of 31.34 putts per round, but she credited a recently putting lesson for Fridays improvement. “Im trusting it more and jusst trying to relax,” Sharp said.dddddddddddd “Its been a part of my game that hasnt been the greatest this year. Ive hit a lot of greens and not making a lot of birdies, so today was definitely a step in the right direction.” While Sharp controlled the leaderboard following the morning group, Wie overcame windy conditions to post the best round of the afternoon — closing with a 4-under 31 on the back nine. She closed with a birdie on the par-5 18th and needed only 28 putts in her first round since earning her first major championship at Pinehurst. Wie, who was 64th on the LPGA Tour money list in 2012 and 41st last year, has yet to miss a cut this year and leads the money list with nearly $1.6 million. “I just feel comfortable out there, and Im trying to keep improving a little bit every day and still working on a lot of things,” Wie said. Lewis earned an unofficial win in the rain-shortened event as an amateur in 2007, but the Texas native, who finished second to Wie in the Womens Open, struggled early on Friday — much to the dismay of her large pro-Razorbacks gallery. She was 2 over after four holes, thanks to a missed 4-foot par putt on No. 2 and a bogey from the greenside bunker on No. 4. Lewis recovered with three birdies to finish 1 under, but she needed 31 putts on her way to settling for a tie for 43rd. “Its always hard playing here,” Lewis said. “People, I dont think they realize how hard it is. Theres a lot of pressure, and its hard to not put too much pressure on yourself.” European Solheim Cup star Caroline Hedwall also was in the group at 67 along with Jennifer Rosales, Moriya Jutanugarn, Emma Jandel, Gerina Piller, Ji Young Oh, Pornanong Phatlum and Paz Echeverria. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / single that drove in Brau HAMILTON, Ont. — Two power-play goals 1:39 apart in the second period helped the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 4-2 win over the host Hamilton Bulldogs Saturday in American Hockey League play. Adam Ebbett had two goals and an assist for the Penguins (31-20-8) and Tom Kostopoulos and Denver Manderson scored a goal apiece. Peter Mannino made 30 saves for the win. Gabriel Dumont and Mike Blunden scored for the Bulldogs (25-27-5), who dropped their second game in as many nights. Robert Mayer stopped 31 shots in a losing effort. The Penguins were unlucky not to take an early lead just two minutes into the game, as Jayson Megna came free along the left wing and fired a rising wrist shot that rang off Mayers crossbar. It was a shaky period for the Bulldogs netminder, who nearly gifted the opening goal to the Penguins six minutes later when he misplayed the puck behind his net. Davis Drewiske showcased his stickhandling ability to create Hamiltons best scoring chance of the period when he broke past two defenders and out-waited Mannino, but could not slide the puck behind the downed goaltender. Hamilton put an end to the trend of near misses when, as its power play expired, it found the games opening goal at 15:17. An initial point shot was kicked aside by Mannino, but the puck came to Martin St. Pierre at the right circle, and he slid a cross-ice pass to Dumont, who easily fired a one-time shot into the gaping net. Momentum appeared to be in the Bulldogs corner as they emerged from the first period with the lead. But an early collapse to begin the second would drastically change the landscape of the game. Ebbett tipped in a point shot from Nick Drazenovic just 42 seconds into the period to level the game at a goal apiece, and the Penguins struck again just 1:39 later. After St. Pierre was whistled for hooking, Ebbett won the ensuing faceoff in the Hamilton zone straight back to Kostopoulos at the blue line, who took a heavy slap shot that beat Mayer over the near shoulder to give the Penguins the lead. Play moved almost exclusively into the Hamilton zone after the quick goals, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton built on its lead when a cross-checking penalty to Greg Pateryn sent it back to the power play. Adam Payerl wrong-footed Mayer with a wrap-around play, and the goaltender was just able to deny his first effort with his foot. But his hold on the post was weak, and Manderson successfully swooped in to bang in the rebound at 10:59 of the second. The Bulldogs cut into the deficit on a power play of their own at 3:53 of the third period. Having already scored a goal, Dumont took his turn as creator, threading a cross-ice pass to Blunden in the low slot. The winger tipped the puck through the legs of Mannino, who was fooled by the sudden change of pace. That goal appeared to galvanize Hamilton, as the Bulldogs pressed furiously for the tie as the period wore on. Sven Andrighetto came closest to scoring the equalizer when he fired a heavy shot from the top of the left circle that beat Mannino only to hit his crossbar and deflect clear. Ebbett put the game out of reach at 19:04, when he scored his second goal of the night into an empty net. . LOUIS — Duke forward Jabari Parker has won the Wayman Tisdale Award, presented by the U.MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee tweaked its top of the batting order recently and it has been paying off. On Friday night, the rest of the Brewers lineup joined in on the fun. Ryan Braun homered to highlight a five-run first inning and the Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 11-5 on Friday night. “Everybodys swinging the bat well,” Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said, “and theres no doubt when everybody is hitting like this and there are mistakes made, were not missing them like we were earlier.” Braun had three hits and three RBIs for Milwaukee, which has won 25 of its last 31 games against Chicago. Rickie Weeks and Martin Maldonado had three hits and two RBIs each as the Brewers scored a season-high runs in its most lopsided victory of the year. “Youve got to cherish moments like this when you come out swinging and it lasts the whole game,” Weeks said. “Its always a good thing.” Marco Estrada (5-2) allowed three earned runs and six hits in six innings. Travis Wood (5-5) turned in his shortest outing of the season when he lasted only 2 2-3 innings. He gave up 10 hits and seven earned runs for the Cubs (19-33), who have the worst record in the majors. “They hit everything I threw up there,” said Wood, who allowed two hits and struck out seven in seven innings of a 4-2 victory over Milwaukee on May 18. “It didnt matter what I threw. They were hacking early and they got to me. … Three pitches into it, I was two runs downs. Its tough to get into a rhythm there.” Chicago, shut out in its last two games at San Francisco, ended its scoreless streak at 22 innings. “We scored a couple of runs but we fell behind the 8 ball early, and it was just kind of tough to recover,” Chicago manager Rick Renteria said. The change to the top of Milwaukees lineup has paid dividends. Jean Segura has batted leadoff the last eight games and is 14 for 38 (.368) with seven runs scored during that time. Braun has hit second in each of the last six games and is 13 for 27 (.481) with seven RBIs. Before this season he had not batted anywhere in the starting lineup but third since Sept. 30, 2010. And Carlos Gomez batted cleanup for his seventh straight game — Aramis Ramirez is on the disabled list — and is 13 foor 27 with one homer and eight RBIs.dddddddddddd He led off his first 42 games this season. Against Chicago, they were a combined 4 for 5 with a walk in the first two innings to help Milwaukee take a 6-0 lead. “We just need to do what works for us,” Segura said. “This is good for us.” All three reached base in the first, as Chicago allowed five runs in an inning for the first time since April 12, against St. Louis. “When you come out in the first inning like we did, thats outstanding,” Roenicke said. “It allows your pitcher to do some different things, and then we added to it, which a lot of times weve been scoring in the first inning or second inning and then we dont do much the rest of the game.” On the first pitch of the game, Segura reached on an infield single. Two pitches later, Brauns blast sailed over the wall in right-centre field for his eighth homer — and first at Miller Park. “When you get guys on base early, things usually escalate pretty well after that,” Weeks said. Gomez walked and scored on a double by Khris Davis for a 3-0 lead. Weeks followed with a run-scoring single before Maldonado gave Milwaukee a 5-0 lead with a two-out double. In the second, Gomez extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single that drove in Braun for the six-run lead. A four-run fifth padded Milwaukees lead to 11-2. “It makes things a little easier, especially when Im kind of scuffling,” Estrada said. “My last two outings before this Ive kind of been all over the place. Tonight I just felt much better. I located better, but still walked four guys and cant keep doing stuff like that.” NOTES: Ramirez will begin a rehab assignment Sunday with the Class-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. … Chicagos 20 road losses are the most in the NL. … Braun moved into sole possession of fourth place on the franchises all-time RBI list with 707. … Wood was trying to become the fourth Cubs pitcher in the last 20 years with five victories in May. … Milwaukee tied a team record by collecting at least 10 hits in its ninth straight game. … Starlin Castro has reached safely in his last 14 games at Miller Park dating to Aug. 22, 2012. … Chicago is 7-25 at Miller Park since the start of the 2011 season. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ach Barry Trotz said a me BOSTON — The Washington Nationals have quite a one-two punch in their starting rotation. Gio Gonzalez followed Stephen Strasburgs strong effort a night earlier by pitching 6 1-3 effective innings to carry the Nationals to a 4-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. Gonzalez held Boston to two hits and no runs before leaving with two runners on in the seventh. “Were talking about two guys that are such talented guys, they have great stuff,” said Nationals catcher Jesus Flores, who caught both games. “Its hard to adjust. They throw hard and they have good breaking ball pitches. Youve got to be a good hitter, just to go out there and look for a good pitch to drive. Stras and Gio are pretty much wearing them down when theyre in a good spot.” One night earlier, Strasburg held Boston to two runs over six innings, striking out 13. Adam LaRoche hit a solo homer and Washington spoiled Daisuke Matsuzakas return from reconstructive elbow surgery with its second straight win over the Red Sox. The Nationals go for the sweep Sunday when Jordan Zimmermann faces Jon Lester. “Its no picnic facing Zimmermann or any of our starters,” manager Davey Johnson said. “Thats been our strength all year, holding the opposition down.” Ian Desmond had a two-run single and Michael Morse added an RBI double during a three-run fourth for Washington. Matsuzaka (0-1), making his first major league start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June 10, gave up four runs and five hits over five innings, striking out eight and walking one. “I definitely think I pitched better than I had during my rehab,” Matsuzaka said through a translator. “The biggest difference today was the consistency of my velocity and the command of all my pitches.” The Red Sox have lost five of six, dropped below .500 (29-30) and are 1-4 on a six-game homestand that concludes Sunday. Gonzalez (8-2) allowed David Ortizs leadoff double in the second and Dustin Pedroias infield hit in the sixth before leaving with two runners on. Gonzalez, Mays NL pitcher of the month, allowed two runs, struck out five, walked two and was helped by a pair of solid defensive plays by third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and one by second baseman Danny Espinosa. “I felt like the team did a great job, the defensive was unbelievable, the offence came alive and the bullpen shut it down for me,” Gonzalez said. “My arm slot was just going down a little bit and I couldnt find the zone after that.” Gonzalez was 5-0 with a 2.25 ERA in May. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine felt it was a decent first start for Matsuzaka. “If we can build on that — eight strikeouts in five innings — thats pretty good,” Jarrod Saltalamacchia had a pinch-hit, bases-loaded two-run double off reliever Michael Gonzalez in the seventh, cutting it to 4-2, but Gonzalez got the next two batters with runners on first and third. Tyler Clippard got the final three outs for his seventh save, and second in two days. Leading 1-0 in the fourth, Washington added three runs off Matsuzaka. Morse hit his double after Bryce Harper walked and advanced on Zimmermans hit-and-run single through a vacant shortstop hole. Desmond followed with his single to right. The Nationals went ahead when LaRoche homered on the first pitch of the second. Ortiz had a leadoff double in the second, advanced on a wild pitch when Gio Gonzalez crossed up catcher Flores and hit him in the midsection with a breaking pitch. Gonzalez then got Will Middlebrooks to ground out and Darnell McDonald on a fly out. In the sixth, Espinosa made a leaping grab of Adrian Gonzalezs liner in short right. Zimmerman had a backhand stab of Middlebrooks second-inning grounder. NOTES: The Red Sox designated OF Marlon Byrd before the game to make room for Matsuzaka. “Marlon came here and kind of saved the day,” Valentine said. “Hell probably be with another team. I hope its not someone on the AL East.” Byrd was acquired from the Cubs on April 21 for RHP Michael Bowden and a player to be named, played in 34 games, hitting .270 with one homer and seven RBIs. … Valentine said of Matsuzaka, “Id like to get it over. I dont know what to expect. Ive never really seen him.” … The Nationals team bus was stuck in traffic and took nearly 90 minutes to get to the park. Manager Davey Johnson did not talk to the media before the game, sending bench coach Randy Knorr to take his place due to the late arrival. … Thirty-three cancer survivors cycled around the warning track before the game, kicking off the 33rd annual Pan Mass Challenge, a two-day bike-a-thon that will be held in August to raise money for cancer research and patient care. Player wives Tiffany Ortiz and Holly Beckett are expected to join the Red Sox team of riders. Téma: Jak postupovat / lked of quittin SAN ANTONIO — Georges Niang scored 24 points, but also broke his foot will miss the rest of the NCAA tournament, as Iowa State pulled away from No. 14 North Carolina Central in the second half for a 93-75 win Friday night in the East Region. The Big 12 tournament champions found themselves in an early struggle with a program making its first NCAA tournament appearance in just its third year as a full-time Division I program. But the Cyclones quickness and balance eventually took over. Iowa State (27-7) had five players score in double figures. Niangs two 3-pointers early in the second half keyed Iowa States run that put the game away. After the game the Cyclones announced on Twitter: “Georges Niang has a foot fracture and will miss the remainder of the season.” Jeremy Ingram scored 28 for North Carolina Central (28-6), which came in on a 20-game win streak and won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Matched up against a tournament newcomer, Iowa State players said they wouldnt look past the Eagles. As this years tournament has shown, hubris breeds upsets and the Cyclones werent taking any chances, especially after a first half in which the Eagles took an early lead and stayed within five at halftime. The Cyclones were wary of a team that dominated its league, even a lightly-regarded like the MEAC. The Eagles also had notched an upset win over North Carolina State and nearly took down Wichita State, the nations only undefeated team and the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Regional. Earlier in the day, North Carolina Central saw their neighbours from Durham, perennial power Duke, get knocked off by Mercer in one of the tournaments biggest upsets so far and dreamed of making some magic of their own in their tournament debut. Iowa State tried to show some muscle at the start when the Cyclones opened the scoring with an alley-oop reverse dunk by Melvin Ejim. If it was a play meant to scare the Eagles, it didnt work. North Carolina Central opened the game with a flurry of 3-pointers and put bodies on the Cyclones on every rebound. Karamo Jawara scored 10 points in the first half and tied it 30-30 on a soft jumper. Iowa State appeared to get the game under control with an 8-0 run punctuated by Ejims fast break dunk. The Eagles rallied with a 9-2 run of their own before Iowa State took a 45-39 lead into halftime. North Carolina Central simply couldnt sustain it. Over 40 minutes, the Cyclones were just too fast, too strong and too balanced. There were just too many Cyclones doing too many things. Ejim, the Big 12 player of the year, scored 17 points. DeAndre Kane, the MVP of the Big 12 tournament, scored 14 with seven rebounds and five assists. Dustin Hogue and Monte Morris each scored 15. In one sequence, Hogue ripped a rebound out of the arms of an Eagles player, passed to Monte Morris, who whipped the ball to Ejim for a another dunk. And then there was Niang, whose 3-pointers pushed Iowa States lead to 11 early in the second half. Niang made four of Iowa States nine 3-pointers. North Carolina Central coach LeVelle Moton should have at least had a chance to enjoy some of his big week. But two days after the NCAA tournament bracket was announced, Bracketts 1-year-old son was hospitalized with burns after a coffee spill accident and his family didnt make the trip with him to San Antonio. Upset by treatment he considered abusive, the Miami Dolphins tackle let the situation fester for months before leaving the team last week. Martins agent then complained to the Dolphins, who suspended guard Richie Incognito. The NFL is investigating whether Incognito harassed or bullied Martin, and whether their teammates and the organization mishandled the matter. Some say Martin, a Stanford graduate who went about his business quietly, handled the situation well. But pro football is a macho world, and some players believe Martin should have responded more firmly. “Is Incognito wrong? Absolutely. Hes 100 per cent wrong,” New York Giants safety Antrel Rolle said. "No individual should have to go through that, especially in their workplace. “But at the same time, Jonathan Martin is a 6-4, 320-pound man. I mean, at some point and time you need to stand your ground as an individual. Am I saying go attack, go fight him? No. I think we all understand we can stand our ground without anything being physical.” Dolphins players have robustly defended Incognito, long considered among the NFLs dirtiest players. Hes now a notorious national villain, but teammates praise his leadership and loyalty. Theyve been less passionate in their support of Martin, saying he and Incognito behaved like best friends. “They did a lot of stuff together,” tackle Tyson Clabo said. “So if he had a problem with the way he was treating him, he had a funny way of showing it.” Martin is with his family in California to undergo counselling for emotional issues. A senior partner in a New York law firm was appointed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to investigate possible misconduct and prepare a report. DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association, said Thursday that he continues to be in touch with those involved. “The NFLPA has taken steps to ensure that every one of our affected members is represented,” Smith said in a statement. “It is our duty as a union to learn the full facts, protect the interests of players involved and hold management accountable to the highest standards of fairness and transparency.” The alleged bullying saga engulfing the Dolphins has shed a light on how damaging perceptions can be in the violent world of the NFL. A Pittsburgh native, Martin is the son of Harvard graduates and his great grandfather also graduated from the school in 1924. At Stanford he protected Andrew Lucks blind side, and also majored in the classics. Taken in the second round of the 2012 draft, Martin has what it takes physically to be an NFL player — size, skill, athleticism, intelligence. He won praise from the Dolphins for his diligent study of game and practice video.dddddddddddd But while has been a starter since the first game of his rookie season, Martin developed a reputation in the NFL for lacking toughness. That impression might have been reinforced by the way he handled his issues with Incognito, current and former teammates acknowledge. “A lot of people might look at Jonathan Martin and think that hes soft because he stepped away from the game, and say, Why dont you just fight him?” said Seattle Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin, who played with Martin at Stanford. "Well, if you look at it with common sense and being logical, what options did Jonathan Martin have? “He could fight Richie Incognito. He could go and tell on the players, which we know in the football locker room doesnt go over too well. Or he could remove himself from the situation and let the proper channels take care of itself. And I think he made the intelligent, smart choice without putting himself or Richie Incognitos physical abilities in danger.” Houston Texans Antonio Smith, who has accused Incognito of dirty play since they went against each other in college, said Martin should have responded more forcefully. Smith drew a three-game suspension this year for taking Incognitos helmet and hitting him during an exhibition game. “I dont think that in my opinion a grown man should get bullied,” Smith said. “And I think that if youre realistically getting bullied, theres only one way my mom taught me and my dad taught me how to get rid of bullies. They used to always say, You hit a bully in the mouth. It will stop him from bullying, no matter what you hit him with.” Incognitos harassment of Martin included text messages that were racist and threatening, two people familiar with the situation have told The Associated Press. Incognito is white, while Martin is biracial. Two other people familiar with the situation have said Martin talked of quitting football earlier in his pro career before leaving the Dolphins. One person said Martin considered giving up the sport because of the way he was being treated by other offensive linemen on the team. The person added that Martin now wants to continue his football career. The Dolphins (4-4) play for the first time since the scandal broke Monday night at Tampa Bay (0-8). At least 75 reporters and cameramen tracking the case were in the locker room after Thursdays practice, but receiver Brian Hartline said the scrutiny wont prevent the team from playing well. “It almost heightens your awareness,” he said. “You know its going to take away from your focus, so it does the exact opposite. You overcompensate to make sure you stay aware of the game.” ’ ’ ’ |

The Ducks are hoping defenceman Francois Beauchemin returns from an injury for their next game Sunday against Edmonton. Anaheim defencemen Luca Sbisa, Sheldon Souray and Mark Fistric also are out with injuries. ORLANDO, Fla. — Eric Winston was elected president of the NFL Players Association on Wednesday, three years after he was active for the union during the lockout. The 30-year-old offensive lineman was the Arizona Cardinals starting right tackle last season, his eighth in the league. He is currently a free agent. Winston succeeds Domonique Foxworth as NFLPA president. Foxworth was out of the league last season and so could not seek re-election. NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith tweeted: “Thank you to @Foxworth24 and all the Executive Committee for their leadership. Congratulations to Eric Winston. Lots of great work ahead.” The other candidates for president were New Orleans Saints tight end Ben Watson and former Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark, who is a free agent. Watson and Clark will both serve on the executive committee elected later Wednesday by the unions board of representatives. Clark joined Lorenzo Alexander and Jay Feely of the Cardinals, Zak DeOssie and Mark Herzlich of the Giants, Adam Vinatieri of the Colts, and Scott Wells of the Rams as new members of the executive commiittee.dddddddddddd Watson, Matt Hasselbeck of the Colts, and free agent Brian Waters were re-elected. Saints quarterback Drew Brees stepped down from the executive committee. Winston has played for Houston, Kansas City and Arizona since being chosen by the Texans in the third round of the 2006 draft. He played his first six NFL seasons with the Texans, joined the Chiefs in 2012, then moved to the Cardinals last season. Winston has started 112 consecutive games. He has served on the unions committees for finance and agent discipline and does community work on behalf of Shriners Hospital for Children. Winston was elected as a co-alternate union representative by the Texans in 2010. While in Kansas City, he drew plenty of national attention early in the 2012 season, when he criticized Chiefs fans who cheered when the teams then-quarterback, Matt Cassel, got a concussion during a game. “Its 100 per cent sickening,” Winston said that day. “Ive never, ever — and Ive been in some rough times on some rough teams — Ive never been more embarrassed in my life to play football than at that moment right there.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / terms on a new collective barg Carl Robinson has accomplished quite a bit in his first nine Major League Soccer games at the helm of the Vancouver Whitecaps. After a rocky off-season that saw star striker Camilo Sanvezzo force his way out of town, the energetic and enthusiastic rookie head coach retooled his roster and has Vancouver off to a 3-2-4 start, including a 3-1-1 mark at B.C. Place Stadium. Robinson then admittedly took a risk this week by selecting a “younger than young” starting 11 in a hard-fought 2-1 road defeat to Toronto FC in the first leg of Amway Canadian Championship semifinal that resulted in the Whitecaps escaping with a valuable away goal. But like so many teams in MLS, picking up wins on the road has been elusive, and Robinson will be looking for his first on Saturday when the Whitecaps visit the Columbus Crew. You can see all the action on TSN beginning at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. “Were hungry. Part of the reason I left some of the senior guys out on Wednesday was to rest them for Saturday,” said the Welshman. “Theyve got to go in now and give me everything theyve got for the weekend.” Vancouver is 0-1-3 on the road so far in 2014, but played tough in a loss to the L.A. Galaxy and a draw against to Real Salt Lake — two teams considered to be among the Western Conferences best. Robinson said its his job to find a way to get his players on the front foot when they are the visitors, something that comes much easier at home. “Once I find that solution its going to be a lot easier because it wont put us under as much pressure at B.C. Place in getting results,” said Robinson. "Its known throughout MLS that teams, when they go on the road, do struggle. But I think that if youre able to win four or five games away from home and take care of your home business then youre going to be there in the playoffs. “MLS brings up funny results. You lose two or three games and youre down at the bottom of the conference. You win two or three games and youre at the top of the conference. Thats the way Major League Soccer is set up and I think its an exciting way to go.” Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted said its up to the squad to trust themselves and their abilities in tough environments. “I think its a mentality thing — going away from home and still believing fully that you can go win, even against good teams,” he said. “Believing in the team and believing in your own ability and going away from home and trying to win every game is an important thing.” Ousted and the Whitecaps other regulars saw some of that fight from the sidelines on Wednesday as Vancouvers kids battled a Toronto roster that boasted high-priced talent like Jermain Defoe and Michael Bradley. “The senior players were there and rooted them on and tried to support them as best as possible,” said Ousted. “The young guys did brilliantly. It was a chance for them to show the coaches what they can do and they did really well.” The Crew (3-3-3) won their first three games of the season but have failed to record a victory in the last six, including a 1-0 road loss to the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday. “They are a little bit of a wounded animal. Theyre a good team and teams like that will do anything to get back to winning ways,” said Ousted. "Were going to their place, were going away from home and they probably are going to come out and give all they can to get the win. We need to be ready for both a battle and a soccer match. “The start of the game will probably be a battle and be about finding the edge. After that we can hopefully get our game going and keep the ball and get chances.” Columbus, meanwhile, will be hoping to get back in the win column for the first time since March 29. “Well be coming home, so well have a little more energy, hopefully, that were playing in front of our home fans,” Crew midfielder Ethan Finlay told the clubs official website. “(The Whitecaps) are a really good team … theyre a team that you have to watch for, they have a lot of pieces going forward, and it will be a tough test.” One of those pieces in Vancouvers attack is Pedro Morales, who has three goals and two assists in six games this season, including two in last weekends 3-2 home victory over the San Jose Earthquakes. The Chilean is one of the pieces Robinson brought in after Sanvezzos departure and his presence in midfield has been a big part of the Whitecaps early success as the team looks to return to the post-season after missing out in 2013. On the other side, Columbus boasts the equally dangerous Federico Higuain, a striker who has four goals and two assists so far in this campaign. “Hes a special player,” Robinson said of the Argentine. "Ive got one in Pedro Morales. He makes things happen in games. “Its going to be interesting. Theres two playmaking players (who are) going to be on the field on Saturday and whichever one probably has the biggest influence will win the game.” Notes: Vancouver is 2-2-0 all-time against Columbus, including a 2-1 home victory last season. … Robinson said he was pleased with striker Omar Salgados performance on Wednesday. The 20-year-old started the season with the second-tier Charleston Battery, but was recalled after the Whitecaps parted ways with Kenny Miller. And with Darren Mattocks out injured, Robinson said the first overall pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft will remain with Vancouver for the foreseeable future. … The second leg of the Amway Canadian Championship tie between Toronto and Vancouver goes Wednesday at B.C. Téma: Jak postupovat / anada was coming off a LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Urijah (The California Kid) Faber finds himself in an unaccustomed position Saturday night at UFC 175 — on the preliminary card. Faber, a former WEC champion who has challenged for a UFC championship belt three times, has never lost a non-title bout and was in the main event last time out at UFC 169. But the 35-year-old bantamweight from Sacramento, currently ranked second among 135-pound contenders, find himself topping the televised preliminaries before the pay-per-view portion of the show at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Middleweight champion Chris Weidman meets former light-heavyweight title-holder Lyoto (The Dragon) Machida of Brazil in the main event while womens bantamweight champion (Rowdy) Ronda Rousey takes on Alexis Davis, a native of Port Colborne, Ont., who fights out of San Jose. Faber faces No. 12 Alex (Bruce Leroy) Caceres in a fight where a win means much more to the up-and-coming Caceres than the veteran Faber. Having an established star like Faber (30-7) lead into the pay-per-view is good for the UFC. Faber has no complaints, knowing the prelim finale will draw plenty of viewers on free TV. A canny businessman, Faber understands the value of keeping his brand in the spotlight. “I feel great,” said the five-foot-six fighter with a megawatt smile and dimple in his chin. "Its kind of a strange thing. Ive gotten to the point now where Im one of the veterans of the sport. “Ive had the same lifestyle since I was a little kid — basically do your homework, hang out with your buddies and play your sports. So Im living the same life. To be the crafty old veteran at this point is kind of funny. … Im 35 now and feeling as fresh as a daisy, ready to rock and roll. Its good position to be in.” The matchup was apparently triggered by a fan on social media. The 26-year-old Caceres took up the cause and Faber accepted the bout when the UFC offered it. “Its smart to want to fight me,” said Faber. “I mean, the guy doesnt have anything to lose. Im one of the bigger names in the sport.” But as UFC president Dana White often says, be careful of what you wish for. Faber is a 15-1 favourite to put Caceres in his place, in the eyes of some oddsmakers. Rather than titles, Faber talks about being the best fighter he can be these days. But he believes the two can come together, even if the championship belt currently belongs to teammate T.J. Dillashaw. “I feel like I still havent had my best performance,” Faber said. “When I do, I feel like Ill be the champion.” Caceres (10-5 with one no contest) has won four of his last five fights. It could have been five straight but his split decision win over Kyung Ho Kang in March was changed to a no contest after he tested positive for marijuana. That earned him a six-month suspension. Faber is coming off a second defeat at the hands of Brazils Renan Barao, who lost his bantamweight title to Dillashaw one fight later. “I dont like to dwell on such,” Faber said of his loss. “As soon as that one was over, it was on to the next one, I cant really change the past, It was really unfortunate because I definitely had more fight in me. Im a guy thats known for being able to push through adversity. I didnt get a chance to show that. It could have been one of my greatest fights … So its onto the next one. Ill make this next one my greatest fight.” Barao knocked Faber out in the first round at UFC 169 in February what some — including White — thought was a premature stoppage. Faber was getting the worst of it on the ground, but gave referee Herb Dean a thumbs up to show he was still on top of things. Dean missed the gesture and stepped in to stop the fight. Barao, filling in for the injured Dominick Cruz, won a five-round decision over Faber at UFC 149 in Calgary in July 2012 to win the interim bantamweight title. Faber suffered a broken rib early in the fight. A former featherweight champion in the WEC, Faber was the longtime face of MMAs lighter weight classes. But he lost his 145-pound crown to Mike Brown in November 2008 and was beaten in a rematch seven months later. After dropping an April 2010 decision to champion Jose Aldo, who had dethroned Brown, Faber dropped down to 135 pounds. He has gone 7-3 since (6-3 in the UFC) with wins over Takeya Mizugaki, Eddie Wineland, Brian Bowles, Canadian Ivan Menjivar, Scott Jorgensen, Iuri Alcantara and Michael McDonald and title losses to Dominick Cruz and Barao. Faber, who made his pro debut in November 2003, may have slipped down the bantamweight mountain slightly but he remains active. Saturday marks his sixth fight in a little more than 16 months. “Im pumped to be back,” he said. Dillashaw winning the bantamweight title has changed the 135-pound landscape. Especially since the two train together as part of Team Alpha Male at Fabers gym. “I couldnt be more excited about that,” Faber said of the Dillashaw win. "It was a big deal for our team and for myself, a guy that I helped bring up. “People have asked about us fighting and I dont really want to do that.” Faber talks of “exciting fights,” citing Cruz, Barao and Kid Yamamoto. “Just keep winning and putting out my best performance.” But he doesnt rule out a Dillashaw clash. “If it comes to a point where we need to cross that bridge, its going to be a discussion that he and I are going to have to have with our bosses Dana and Lorenzo (UFC president Dana White and co-owner Lorenzo Feritta).” Cruz, who has not fought since October 2011 and had to give up his title due to his knee injury layoff, will have problems getting his championship belt back, according to Faber. “I dont think hell do very well against T.J.,” said Faber. The California Kid speaks warmly about Caceres, citing his recent win streak and positive if somewhat quirky outlook on life. “I kind of like the guy. But Im going to beat the crap out of him.” Away from the cage, Faber has proved to be one of the more successful fighter-entrepreneurs. A graduate of the University of California, Davis, where he was a standout wrestler when not working on a degree in human development, is on his second clothing company (Torque), has written a book (“The Laws of the Rings”) and has had several other business ventures, usually drawing in family and friends to help. In addition to his Ultimate Fitness gym in Sacramento, Faber also has a private gym on the California coast. A new project, in conjunction with photographer Sam Hon, is Optical Panacea which combines the imagery of a background photo with a series of action shots in MMA and other sports. Faber is also involved in the MMA Draft combine, which serves as a showcase for amateur athletes who want to get into fighting. The many ribbons to his bow may explain why Faber has no plans to follow Randy (The Natural) Couture and fight into his 40s. “I have no desire to do that,” he said. “But could I? Of course I could, if I put my mind to it. But I dont think thats the plan for me” NOTES — Faber will have veteran fighter Martin (The Hitman) Kampmann in his corner as coach.
