Téma: Jak postupovat / h neither team led by more than si TRELLEBORG, SWEDEN – Jake Paterson seemed to be the underdog in Canadas goalie competition when the selection camp opened. Not anymore. The Detroit Red Wings prospect made 23 saves in Canadas 4-1 win over Switzerland on Monday in what was the teams final pre-tournament test. Paterson also started Sundays game against Sweden making 31 saves and providing the lone bright spot for Canada in a 3-0 defeat. “My mindset going into it was that each goaltender would get a game and then whoever we felt deserved the opportunity to play the third game would be the guy and wed see how he responds,” said head coach Brent Sutter. And Paterson responded well in allowing just one goal, which came while Canada was shorthanded in the first period. “I thought he was really good again tonight. Hes seeing a lot of pucks, a lot of pucks hit him in the crest and thats what you want your goaltender to do. He made a couple great saves for us at critical times. Ive been happy with both our goalies, but Patty, the last two games, has been outstanding.” So will he start the tournament opener against Germany on Boxing Day? “Well wait and see. I havent decided yet,” Sutter said with a smile. “Itd be an honour to be the starter,” said Paterson, "but its still up in the air and Im not sure what the coaches are thinking so if Im fortunate enough to get the call Ill be ready. “Obviously when I found out the news that I was starting tonight I was pretty happy about it.” Zach Fucale also performed well in his pre-tournament start stopping 31 of 33 shots in a win against Finland on Friday. And the Mooseheads goalie has the better recent resume having helped Halifax win the Memorial Cup in May. The Montreal Canadiens prospect also has experienced success on the international stage helping Canada win the 2012 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in the Czech Republic. Paterson, meanwhile, has limited experience wearing the Maple Leaf. He was the third goalie on last years junior squad in Ufa, Russia, but didnt get into a game. He was also a backup with Team Ontario at the 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Winnipeg and didnt play. But Paterson is a year older than Fucale and Sutter went with 19-year-old goalies in his two previous times behind the world junior bench in 2005 and 2006. And Paterson has shown he can meet the moment. He stopped every shot he faced during last Decembers selection camp in order to steal a spot from Laurent Brossoit. Now he may have stolen another job. The third-year pro went shot for shot with Knicks star Carmelo Anthony down the stretch before nailing the most important one of the night. . — Amid stories about Jeremy Lin and the upcoming all-star game, the Detroit Pistons have quietly become one of the hottest teams in the NBA.NEW ORLEANS — Carmelo Anthony made up his mind. He was taking the big shots in crunch time, and there wasnt anything 6-foot-10 All-Star Anthony Davis or anyone else on the Pelicans could do about it. “It was just a game where I didnt want to see slip away,” Anthony said. His 12-foot jumper over Davis from the left side of the lane with 1:14 left, followed by a strikingly similar 14-footer over Luke Babbitt half a minute later, capped a 42-point performance that lifted the New York Knicks to 98-91 victory Wednesday night and halted a three-game skid. Looking to somehow stop Anthony from beating them in the waning minutes, the Pelicans sent Davis to the perimeter to guard New Yorks prolific scorer. But Anthony had no intention of giving up the shot, and had a plan to create an open look against the NBAs leading shot blocker. “Without a doubt. I knew once I beat him, just get a little bit of space from him, I had a chance of making the shot,” Anthony said. A night after losing at Memphis, New York blew a 13-point, fourth-quarter lead before Anthony took over. J.R. Smith had 19 points and Tim Hardaway Jr. added 16 for New York, which lost Iman Shumpert to a sprained left knee in the third quarter. Tyson Chandler had 11 rebounds and a pair of blocks in the final minutes. Eric Gordon scored 28 for the Pelicans, but was shut out in the fourth quarter. Davis finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Austin Rivers finished with 14 points and Brian Roberts 10 for the Pelicans, whove lost three of four. It was almost enough in a see-saw game included 16 lead changes and six ties, if only the Pelicans had an answer for Anthony. “Our help (defence) was trying to get there, but you cant help against a guy like that if you give him one or two dribbles to the basket,” Pelicans coach Monty Williams said of Anthony. “He was efficient all night long. … He hit tough shots. A lot of those shots had a hand in his face.” Then there was one critical, late sequence in which Chandler saved a lost ball after a missed shot and got it to AAnthony for a layup “I just wanted to win.dddddddddddd Whatever it took to keep that play alive,” Chandler said. “Those kind of plays ultimately help you win basketball games.” New York appeared to be seizing control late in the third quarter, which the Knicks closed with an 8-2 run that included two jumpers by Anthony, Hardaways breakaway dunk set up by Raymond Feltons block of Rivers, and Chandlers one-handed alley-oop finish over Davis. Smith then hit a 3 and driving layup to open the fourth quarter, giving New York its largest lead at 83-70. But the unlikely combination of Rivers, Babbitt and Roberts helped New Orleans storm back. Rivers hit a driving layup and a 3. Babbitt added a 3 and driving layup to cap an 11-2 spurt. Later, Babbitts turnaround and Roberts two consecutive driving floaters vaulted New Orleans back into the lead at 89-88 with 3:58 to go, setting the stage for Anthonys resounding finish. Anthony and Gordon wasted little time working their way into double-digit points, dueling throughout a tight first half in which neither team led by more than six points. Anthony scored 18 points in the opening two periods and Gordon 17. New York led by only a basket after Rivers pull-up jumper late in the second quarter, but Hardaway hit a 3 and Anthony added a free throw to make it 53-47 at halftime. Ultimately, Babbit said, the Pelicans were simply taken down by “one of the best one-on-one players in the league.” “Carmelo was just in the zone tonight,” Babbitt continued. “He was in rhythm. He made some plays down the stretch that really hurt us.” Notes: Knicks F-C Amare Stoudemire sat out with left knee soreness. … The Knicks said Shumpert would return to New York for further evaluation. He tore the ACL in the same knee in 2012 as a rookie. “They said my ACLs fine,” Shumpert said. “That was my biggest concern.” … Each of New Orleans last three losses have come against Eastern Conference teams. The Pelicans next two games are on the road against East clubs Charlotte on Friday and Washington on Saturday. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / es what Kelly delivers. NHL draft lottery losers last year, the Florida Panthers had their number come up this year. In the meantime, chalk up yet another loss for the Buffalo Sabres. The Panthers bucked the odds Tuesday by jumping up a spot and earned the right to the top pick in June. Florida, which finished 29th in the league, vaulted ahead of the last-place Sabres, who had the best odds of winning the lottery held in Toronto. “It means a lot to us. Weve very excited,” said Travis Viola, Panthers president of hockey operations. “Were looking to continue to build on our core talent of young players. Its just a great opportunity.” It also marked a reversal of fortune for Florida. After finishing last a year ago, the Panthers were relegated to the No. 2 pick after Colorado won the lottery. The top two projected prospects are left wing Samuel Bennett, of OHL Kingston, who finished first in the final rankings released by NHL Central Scouting last week, and OHL Barrie defenceman Aaron Ekblad. The draft will be held in Philadelphia on June 27-28. The Panthers (29-45-8) had an 18.8 per cent chance of winning the lottery, behind only Buffalo (21-51-10), which had a 25 per cent shot. The Sabres continued whats been a losing trend since the season began in October. Buffalos 51 losses were a franchise worst, and the most losses in the NHL since the New York Islanders went 21-51-7-3 in 2000-01. General manager Tim Murray took the latest loss in stride, telling the teams website that he almost anticipated losing out on the No. 1 pick. “Were very comfortable,” Murray said. “The other way wouldve been gravy, but its kind of what we thought would happen, and we prepared for it.” The Sabres were guaranteed falling no further than second. Florida will have the first pick for the fourth time in franchise history. The Panthers are gradually rebuilding. They made a splash this year by acquiring goalie Roberto Luongo in a trade with Vancouver. And theyll be picking third or better for the fourth time in five years. Their previous top three picks — defenceman Erik Gudbranson (in 2010), wing Jonathan Huberdeau (2011) and centre Aleksander Barkov (2013) |

He was one of six Piston BUFFALO, N.Y. — Sabres coach Ted Nolan knocked twice on the wooden podium for good luck in hoping his team can finish the final week of the season without any more injuries. So far, the fates havent been kind for a last-place team thats losing players and games at an alarming rate. Nolan provided the latest injury update Monday by announcing goalie Nathan Lieuwen and defenceman Chad Ruhwedel will miss the remainder of the season after being diagnosed with concussions. Defenceman Christian Ehrhoffs playing status is uncertain against Detroit on Tuesday. Ehrhoff was struck by a puck and required stitches to close a gash on his right ear. All three were hurt on Sunday, in a 5-2 loss at Philadelphia. Ruhwedel was hurt following what was deemed by the NHL to be an illegal check to the head by Flyers forward Zac Rinaldo. The league suspended Rinaldo on Monday for four games without pay. Lieuwen was hurt during a collision with Flyers forward Jay Rosehill. “I dont believe in luck, but its just been one of those things,” Nolan said, before tapping the podium. “Weve got four games to go. Hopefully, we can get through this unscathed.” Lieuwens injury comes at a time when the Sabres are already thin at goaltending with co-starters Jhonas Enroth and Michael Neuvirth both sidelined. The injuries forced the Sabres to call up both Lieuwen and Matt Hackett from their AHL affiliate in Rochester. Theyll have to call up another goalie to serve as backup and become the seventh goalie to dress for a Sabres game this season. And then theres the rest of Buffalos banged-up lineup which played Philadelphia with 10 players on its injury report. Its a group that includes defencemen Tyler Myers (undisclosed) and Henrik Tallinder (lower body) and forward Drew Stafford (undisclosed). At least, some are scheduled to return to a team that, with a 21-48-9 record, has four games left and guaranteed to finish in last place. Nolan said forwards Marcus Foligno (knee), Chris Stewart (lower body) and Torrey Mitchell (undisclosed) have a chance to return to play against the Red Wings. “Its pretty crazy. I havent seen anything like this,” said forward Zenon Konopka, who has missed seven games with a back injury. “Its tough when youre not in the lineup and missing games. Téma: Jak postupovat / m/Womens-Jim-Otto-Aut TORONTO – Masai Ujiri wasted little time in making his first move of the offseason. Just one day after their season came to an abrupt end, the Raptors have reached an agreement on a three-year contract extension with head coach Dwane Casey, sources confirm to TSN.ca Monday evening. In his third year with the team, Casey, 57, helped lead the Raptors to a franchise-record 48-win season en route to a division title and opening-round elimination to the Brooklyn Nets in a seven-game playoff series. Addressing the media after cleaning out their lockers Monday afternoon, Caseys players seemed to be aware of the teams plans to bring him back. “I think hell be back,” said Kyle Lowry, an unrestricted free agent. “Simple as that. Matter of fact, Im sure hell be back.” Casey was brought in by former Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo ahead of the 2010-11 season after he had won a championship as an assistant in Dallas the year prior. Right out of the gate, he took a team that had ranked near the bottom of the league in every defensive category, a long-time NBA doormat, and immediately changed the culture. After his third-year option was picked up, Casey had mixed results at the helm of the Raptors in his second season, getting off to a slow start and clashing with Lowry. Instead of discarding Casey for his own coach, Ujiri – the incoming GM – opted to give him a one-year trial, to which he did not disappoint. Both he and Lowry developed a mutual respect, as the point guard turned in a career year, DeMar DeRozan blossomed into an all-star and the team went on to exceed every rationale pre-season expectation. Casey became the fourth coach in franchise history to lead the Raptors to the postseason and his fingerprints can be found on the development of Torontos many young players. “Hes been a great coach,” sophomore Terrence Ross said Monday. “Hes helped me with a lot. Hes taught me a lot, especially when it comes to defence. I give him a lot of credit for how I play on the court.” “One thing I respect about coach Casey, man, hes been consistent,” DeRozan added. “Hes been the same Dwane Casey since hes been here, preached the same thing, told us to stick with the same principles and theyll work. We did it, and everything he said came together like he said it would.” “You could go in his office, knock on his door, talk to him whenever, you could text him,” he continued. “Hes a players coach. Hes a great dude. Sometimes you dont even look at him like a coach because you could go up to him and talk to Dwane about any situation. I think thats what helped us a lot.” Casey ranks third in team history with 105 wins, behind Sam Mitchell and Lenny Wilkens and recently became the first coach to lead the Raptors to multiple seasons holding opponents under 100 points and below 45 per cent from the field. The deal was first reported by the Toronto Star Monday evening. Casey and Ujiri will meet with the media on Tuesday. Watch it live on TSN, TSN.ca and TSN GO at 10:15am et/7:15am pt. Téma: Jak postupovat / , we made them." Trailing 52 MILAN, Italy — Indonesian entrepreneur Erick Thohir and two associates signed a deal to take over a majority stake of 18-time Italian champion Inter Milan on Tuesday, becoming the second foreign owners in Serie A. The takeover reportedly cost 350 million euros ($475 million). Thohir, and fellow Indonesians Rosan Roeslani and Handy Soetedjo agreed to buy a 70 per cent stake, Inter said on its website. The first Serie A club to cede majority ownership to foreigners was Roma, which was taken over by a group of Boston executives in 2011. The 43-year-old Thohir is part owner of the Philadelphia 76ers and D.C. United. He is chairman of the Mahaka Group, which has business interests in media and entertainment. “Today is a truly special day in my life,” Thohir said. “I am honoured that Mr. Moratti has entrusted me with the responsibility to lead Inter into the next chapter, and I am excited to have him continue in the future as my partner. The job done by the Moratti family, from Angelos great Inter to Massimos treble record, has made Inter one of the most respected clubs in the world.” Thohir has also served as vice-president of the Indonesian Olympic Committee and as Indonesias chief of mission for the 2012 London Olympics. “I am an entrepreneur but first of all I am a supporter and a sports lover,” Thohir said. “I cannot wait to put our passion and international experience at the service of this fantastic club and its supporters.” It remains unclear if the 68-year-old Moratti, who has owned the club since 1995, will remain president. “That I dont know,” Moratti said outside the office of his family oil company, Saras. “Every president leaves his mark,” Moratti added. “The important thing is that hes always respectful of the rest of the world, beyond his own job, and I think these people also have that in mind. … Theyre people that really mean well and are good character-wise, too.” Inter and city rival AC Milan have each won 18 Serie A titles, second on the all-time list behind Juventus record 29. Inter has also won three European Cups. Moratti took over the club after his father Angelo was owner during the teams early glory years in the 1960s, when Inter won the European Cup twice. After some difficult years under the younger Moratti, Inter returned to the top after the 2006 match-fixing scandal and won five consecutive Serie A titles from 2006-2010. In 2010, Inter also won the Champions League and the Italian Cup for an unprecedented treble in Italy, with Jose Mourinho as manager. However, Inter struggled again in the past two seasons — finishing sixth in 2012 and ninth last season with the same number of losses (16) as wins. Inter is coming off its first loss of this season, a 3-0 defeat to first-place Roma, which left the team in fourth place under first-year manager Walter Mazzarri. Téma: Jak postupovat / or a trade is "a bunc SALT LAKE CITY — Marvin Williams has been so hot the last three games that he didnt let an air ball bother him. With Utah leading by seven in the fourth quarter against the reigning NBA champs, the Jazz forward released a 22-foot jumper that wasnt close. The Jazz came right back to the unfazed Williams and his back-to-back 3-pointers sparked Utah to a 94-89 win over the Miami Heat. “I cant think of a bigger win than this one,” said Williams, who scored 23 points. Trailing 87-79 after Williams shots, the Heat used a 10-4 run to draw within two points after Ray Allen made a 3 from the corner with 46 seconds to play. Rookie Trey Burke, who had 13 points, rose up and drained the clutch 19-foot jump shot to beat the shot clock and Gordon Haywards free throw clinched the win for the Jazz, who have beat the Heat at home three straight times. Burke has said he hit the classic rookie “wall” that often plagues first-year players after theyve played 35-40 games. Shooting just over 30 per cent the past three games, his teammates and coaches have encouraged him to keep shooting. “They come to me and tell me to play with confidence. Dont think about it. Just play freely. Thats what I did tonight,” said Burke, who had a penchant for big shots as the AP Player of the Year at Michigan last season. Dwyane Wade had 19 points for the Heat, who missed their last four shots from the field to thwart their comeback bid. LeBron James was 4 of 13 from the field for 13 points, his lowest scoring total since he had 13 points in a 104-88 win over Atlanta on Nov. 19. “Theres nobody that can stop LeBron from scoring the basketball, but we tried to slow him down collectively as a team and I think we did pretty good,” Williams said. Hayward nearly had his first triple-double with nine points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, while often guarding Wade and James. Richard Jefferson had 14 and Alec Burks had 12 points for the Jazz, who snapped their four-game losing streak in front of a frenzied crowd. James subbed in with 7:54 to play and his team trailing 77-70 and the Heat looked poised for a comeback as they also reached the penalty with 6:51 to play. But James missed his only two field goal attempts of the fourth quarter and was 2 of 4 from the line. The young Jazz, who entered the game with worst record in the Western Conference, relied on their two veterans down the stretch until Burkes big shot. Williams, who averages 9.9 points, has scored 67 points in his last three games and made 5 of 8 from beyond the arc in this one. After his air ball, Williams made a pair of 3-pointers — the last shot just beating the shot clock after Jefferson dove to the floor to gather a loose ball and flip it to Utahs hot hand. “He just found somebody open and I was able to get away from Chris Bosh. I just threw it up there and was able to beat the clock and it went in,” Williams said. Once the Heat turned up the defensive pressure, the Jazz were often scrambling to get any shot they could muster late in the clock. When the ball ended up in the hands of Williams and Jefferson, who had seven in the final period, good things happened. “I cant say enough about their focus and desire to help this young group grow. And their play has been great, gives us a chance to be competitive every night,” Utah coach Ty Corbin said of his veteran forwards. James has averaged 31.3 points and 7.8 assists per game in his last four on the road as the Heat have found their offence, shooting better than 50 per cent. “It was just one of those games where offensively we were out of rhythm and you try to win on the defensive end,” said James, whose team dropped to 27-2 when holding opponents under 100 points this season. The four-time MVP also had scored 30 or more in six straight trips to Salt Lake City, averaging 33.5 points while hitting 57.7 per cent from the field, but didnt ever get things going in a contest that snapped the Heats three-game winning streak. “We didnt shoot the ball well like we are capable of doing,” James said. “We had some great looks, including myself, some really open looks.” Even after a couple nights off, the Heat started sluggishly and the Jazz ran around and through them for a 32-18 lead in the first quarter. The Jazz had 11 assists in the opening period and shot 62 per cent. James gave the Heat their final lead in the opening moments of the third quarter at 54-52, but Utah controlled the game the rest of the way. “It seemed we were always in the right place at the right time tonight,” Hayward said. NOTES: The NBA assessed a $5,000 fine to Chalmers for a flop in the third quarter against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday. The league office previously warned Chalmers for a flop against Atlanta on Jan. 20. . Téma: Jak postupovat / me since 2011. Ov MONTREAL – Rene Bourque had just nine goals and 16 points in 63 regular season games, but the Canadiens forward has become a key cog in Montreals offence during the playoffs. A trade bait name brought up over and over again on local radio, web message boards and social media all season, Bourque netted his first career playoff hat trick in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final Tuesday, giving him eight goals and 11 points in 16 playoffs games and helping his team stave off elimination with a 7-4 victory over the New York Rangers. A while his sudden emergence as a scoring threat in the playoffs has surprised many, its nothing new to his teammates. Despite his regular season struggles, they never doubted the 62, 217-pound power forward would shine through when it mattered most. “Ive said it before and Ill say it again, hes got world class speed and a world class shot and its showing right now in the playoffs,” said forward Max Pacioretty, who also chipped in Tuesday night with a goal and an assist. “Hes a bigger body and he plays a simple game and that suits him well in the playoffs. Its a great time for him to step up and he was huge tonight, he helped out a lot.” After the Canadiens blew a 4-1 lead in the second period on Tuesday night, Bourque halted the Rangers comeback scoring his second goal of the game at 15:10 of the second period to make the score 5-4 and give Montreal a lead they wouldnt relinquish. Bourque then added another goal at 6:33 of the third period to complete the hat trick and help the Canadiens avoid elimination for the third time in these Stanley Cup playoffs. Montreal will try to repeat the feat for a fourth time in Game 6 in New York on Thursday and force a Game 7 back in Montreal on Saturday. “Even going back to last year, he just loves this time of year,” said forward Brendan Gallagher. “Hes leading by example again. For him to go out there and score not only three goals but very timely goals was big. Anytime you give up the lead like that and can come right back and score thats big. Thats what clutch guys do at this time of year, they score timely goals.” Since being acquired from Calgary two years ago in a trade that saw popular scorer Michael Cammalleri go the other way, many have doubted Bourques role on this team. But not Gallagher and his teammates. They saw a hard-working character player that could come up big when it mattered most. “You just gotta understand the character he has,” Gallagher explained. “Hes big. Hes a guy that we rely on. He showed up and thats what we expect from him. Hes a competitor. He loves the atmosphere and he loves the opportunity we have right now and thats kind of expected from him.” Michel Therrien was also thrilled with Bourques performance. “He played a great game; he was a force out there,” the Canadiens head coach said. “On the forecheck, he took the man. He was moving his feet. He was going hard to the map mat. Hes a very good scorer, so definitely that was a great performance by him.” The always quite and humble Bourque wasnt about to take all the credit though. “Everybody was ready for this game,” he said after the game. "We knew the situation. We got a big power-play goal early and a few others. “It was just a see-saw battle back and forth. (Dale) Weise made a great play to me. I called for the puck and somehow it got through. It was nice to get in there.” The pucks have gotten through for Bourque just one less time than they did in the regular season and the Canadiens are hoping his clutch run continues as they try to come back from what is now a one-game deficit. " ROME — Francesco Totti scored the opener and Roma went on to beat Udinese 3-2 Monday to maintain its three-point lead over Napoli in the race for Italys last direct Champions League spot. Third-place Napoli had won earlier, with Gonzalo Higuain scoring a controversial goal in the 90th minute of a 1-0 victory at Torino. The top two finishers in Serie A gain direct entry to the Champions League, while the third-place finisher goes into the last playoff round. Napoli beat Roma 1-0 last weekend, although Roma beat its southern rival 2-0 in October and so holds the head-to-head edge. Roma also has a game in hand. “We need to keep this pace until the end of the season,” said Totti, who scored off a rebound from the centre of the area in the 22nd. It was Tottis sixth goal in 16 appearances this season and the 233rd of his Serie A career, second only to record-holder Silvio Piolas 274. Téma: Jak postupovat / helped the Spurs to PARIS – Milos Raonic is a much different player than the one who lost in the third round of the French Open one year ago. “Not only am I a better player purely all-around, but also on clay,” said Raonic, who is seeded eighth, his highest ever ranking at a Grand Slam event. “Last year, coming in, there was a lot of doubts in my mind, struggling with a coaching change [an emotional split with Galo Blanco] and everything and I just wasnt playing my best tennis leading into it or at the event whereas now Im playing some of my best tennis, definitely my best tennis on clay and I feel like Im getting better each week on the clay.” Just last week, Raonic came within a few points of knocking off Novak Djokovic at the Masters 1000 event in Rome, ultimately falling 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 3-6. After the match, the worlds second-ranked player said he could not remember the last time he felt so “helpless” in the return game. “Thats what I want every single one of my opponents to feel,” Raonic said. “I know that when I can make them have a lot of doubts and a lot of insecurities on my service games, my return games get easier, because they feel the pressure that they need these games and its about imposing myself and I felt that in that match, I was able to impose myself.” Raonic has won 80 pre cent of his first-serve points on clay this season to lead the ATP Tour. Thats up from the 76 per cent last season. “I think its the serve, but also the confidence I have behind the serve when the ball comes back,” Raonic explained. “I think Im structuring points better. A lot of the time when people look at serve stats, they think that its just the serve and nothing happens after that, but its how you back it up and I think it creates more pressure on my opponents that when they do get my serve back, its not just about getting it back, they have to do something with it to at least neutralize [the point], because if I start the point ahead, I can finish it off.” Raonic is a much more complete player than the one who burst onto the scene three years ago at the Australian Open advancing all the way to the fourth round. That remains the furthest he has progressed at a major (hes reached that stage four times, including twice at the US Open and once more at the Australian Open in 2013). It also matches the furthest any Canadian man has ever advanced in the singles competition at a Grand Slam event. But all signs point to that changing soon as the big server from Thornhill, Ont. seeks to break down yet another Canadian tennis barrier. He beat Andy Murray, seeded seventh at Roland Garros, earlier this season at Indian Wells. He pushed Rafael Nadal, the top seed in Paris, to three sets at a hard-court event in Miami this season. So as he enters the years second Grand Slam, his confidence level against the games elite is very healthy. “Its quite high actually,” the 23-year-old said in a matter-of-fact tone. “I feel like every time Im getting better when I put myself in those situations. Its a big focus for me: do well in early rounds so you can face those top guys, because each time you do, youll get more experience.” Raonic could get another shot at Djokovic if the draw holds to form and both make it to the quarterfinals, although the road there for the Canadian is littered with tricky propositions. Hell open the tournament on Sunday against Australian wildcard Nicholas Kyrgios. He is ranked 161st right now, but turned heads in Melbourne at the seasons first major by upsetting Benjamin Becker in the first round before falling to Benoit Paire, a top-30 player, in five sets in the second round. The 19-year-old Kyrgios is viewed as a player on the rise. “I followed him a lot, especially in the Australian Open,” said Raonic. “He was having some exciting matches. He played really well. He likes to play aggressive. He likes to sort of use the ambiance around him and hes got a big personality in that sense. For me, it really comes down to taking care of what I need to take care of. Ive got to take care of my serve. Ive got to go out there, its the first match, with the attitude. The approach on the mental side is going to be very important and I must make sure I stay with patience. It doesnt matter if moments get difficult, because its still three out of five, just let my game flow and let my game follow.” In the second round, Raonic could face 53rd-ranked Czech Lukas Rosol and in the third round, Gilles Simon could be waiting and its certain the Frenchman would have the home fans on his side. Then, should Raonic get to the round of 16, a showdown with ninth-seed Kei Nishikori looms. The Japanese star is 2-0 against Raonic and just beat him in Madrid (straight sets, but both went to a tiebreak). A Canadian man has never made the fourth round at Roland Garros so history seems to be within reach for Raonic, who made it clear he must do better than last years third-round finish if this tournament is to be considered a success for him. And should Raonic make more history at Roland Garros by making the quarterfinals, well, that would be an important milestone, but the rising star is hardly fixated on that benchmark. “It would mean a lot in that moment,” he said, “but I dont think it would be very significant at the same time, because my ambitions dont lie in just making the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam.” .C. |

Yet thats what they got in a three-game series with the Kansas City Royals. The veteran catcher hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning Sunday to lift the Angels to a 4-3 victory. He also connected Friday night for their first run in a win. Iannettas latest go-ahead drive sailed into the lower seats in the left-field corner. “I didnt know if it was going to go out or not. I was just hoping it would stay fair. Im glad it did,” he said. Reliever Tim Collins (0-3) retired the first batter in the eighth before Iannetta hit his fifth homer of the season. “I just missed. I was trying to go away,” Collins said. “You cant miss your spots in those situations. Thats what I did, and thats what happens.” Michael Kohn (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning. Ernesto Frieri got three outs for his sixth save, retiring Alcides Escobar on a popup with a runner on third. Garrett Richards, trying to preserve some arms in the Angels bullpen following Saturday nights 13-inning 7-4 loss, pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked two. “I was prepared to go back out for the eighth, with the bullpen being taxed from last night,” Richards said. “But I always try to go deep in game because I know that if I do, Im doing my job. Im going as hard as I can for as long as I can.” Royals starter Jason Vargas was charged with a run and three hits over 6 1-3 innings in his return to Angel Stadium, and was lifted after 109 pitches with a 3-0 lead. Kelvin Herrera took over with a runner at first and gave up a single by No. 9 hitter Collin Cowgill on his first pitch. Mike Trout hit an RBI double with one out, Albert Pujols was hit by an 0-2 pitch and David Freese had a tying, two-run single. Pujols tried to score the go-ahead run from second on C.J. Crons sharp single, but Lorenzo Cain — starting in right field for the first time this season after 28 starts in centre — threw him out at the plate. Vargas struck out six and tied a career high with five walks. This was the sixth time in 165 big league starts that the 31-year-old left-hander has walked as many as five batters, and the first time since July 20, 2011, with Seattle. “I think he was being extra careful with Pujols and Trout — and Howie Kendricks also tough,” manager Ned Yost said. “Thats a powerful lineup over there. So either he was going to make his pitch, or he wasnt going to make a mistake to those guys and let them drive it out of the ballpark.” Vargas walked his first batter in the second, third and fourth innings after giving up a leadoff single in the first, but the Angels couldnt capitalize. He walked his first two batters in the third before retiring Pujols on a double-play grounder to shortstop and striking out Freese. “It was just one of those games where I had to battle through some innings,” Vargas said. “I was just missing and wasnt able to get ahead on some of those guys, but I was fortunate to get back into some counts later in the inning and ended up getting out of it.” The Royals, who scored first in all three games of the series, took a 3-0 lead in the second. Pedro Ciriaco hit a bloop double that scored Jimmy Paredes, who singled and advanced on Richards first balk in 291 1-3 career innings to that point. Jarrod Dyson reached on a fielding error by Gold Glove shortstop Erick Aybar, and Eric Hosmer followed with a sacrifice fly before Alex Gordon capped the rally with an RBI single. Richards retired his next 11 batters, striking out the side on 11 pitches in the fifth. “Other than the third inning, it was good,” Richards said. Vargas was 9-8 with a 4.02 ERA in 24 starts with the Angels last season after four years with Seattle. He signed a four-year, $32 million contract with Kansas City on Nov. 21. Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, Thursday nights Bruins-Blackhawks game had a goal by Patrice Bergeron initially waved off by the referee, but video review clarified it was a good goal. The situation had Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford scramble behind the net, lose the puck to Brad Marchand, who quickly threw it out to Bergeron who one-timed a shot at the net, and in. During this time, Crawford pushed the back of the net up as the puck crossed the goal line, between the posts. I understand the ruling was that it is a goal as the net didnt come off its post moorings. The question I have, is what if Crawford completely knocked the net off, on his own, as the puck went through? According to the video ruling, they indicated “because the posts remained in place, it was a goal.” If the posts didnt remain in place, and the puck went in, wasnt there a rule in place that allows the goal, if the defending team knocks the net off on their own? I know this is also a delay of game penalty but, in a shooting situation, would this have counted, if Crawford knocked the net off just before the puck went in? Thanks, Louie Melissis from Whitby Hi Louie, Once the referee on the goal line waved off an apparent goal scored on a Patrice Bergeron shot that entered the net from the front position and immediately exited under where Corey Crawford had tipped the goal frame forward, the other on-ice officials quickly gathered to share their perspective on the play. During this conference it was determined (and convinced the ref that initially waved it off) that a good goal had resulted and the initial call on the ice was reversed. Video review was then initiated and it was confirmed that the puck did cross the goal line and that the goal frame was considered in its proper position as spelled out in Rule 78.4. (The goal frame shall be considered in its proper position when at least a portion of the flexible peg(s) are still inside both the goal post and the hole in the ice.) Under Rule 38.4 (Situations Subject to Video Review), the video goal judge (Situation Room) is allowed to rule that the puck crossed the goal line and did so prior to the goal frame being dislodged under subsections (i) and (ii).dddddddddddd. If however, Crawford had knocked the net completely off the moorings prior to the puck crossing the goal line, the video goal judge could only advise the referee that the net was off the mooring prior to the puck crossing the goal line. The resulting verdict through the review process could only be “no goal”. Louie, situations subject to video review aside, the referee can award a goal under Rule 63.6 when he determines that the goal post is displaced, either deliberately or accidentally, by a defending player, prior to the puck crossing the goal line between the “normal” position of the goalposts. We saw Cam Atkinson of the Columbus Blue Jackets awarded a goal under this rule in their big win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. For a goal to be awarded, the goal post must have been displaced by the actions of a defending player, the puck must have been shot (or the player must be in the act of shooting) at the goal prior to the goalpost being displaced, and it must be determined that the puck would have entered the net between the normal position of the goal posts. On this play, if Crawford had knocked the net completely off its moorings (accidentally or otherwise), it would have required a similar conference by the officials to award a goal since the ref closest to the net did not think that the puck had crossed the line between the goal posts! Video review would not be able to assist them in making this call since it is not reviewable and therefore must be determined by the referee(s) on the ice. I am quite sure the same verdict would have eventually been rendered on the ice and a goal would have been awarded to Bergeron. Boston is really bringing their “A” game at the absolute perfect time of the season. The Caps and Flyers draw the Bruins this weekend in afternoon games. Huge points for playoff standings are on the line this weekend with several meaningful 4-point games; Leafs, Flyers, Blue Jackets, Caps, Wings, Minnesota, Phoenix, Dallas, Vancouver just to name a few! Have a great weekend everyone and enjoy the exciting playoff race. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ool where hes now a co HOUSTON — Texans defensive co-ordinator Wade Phillips will take over as Houstons interim head coach and try to help the team end a six-game skid with Gary Kubiak out indefinitely after suffering a mini-stroke this weekend “Im just keeping the seat warm,” Phillips said. Its a familiar position for Phillips, a 30-plus-year NFL coaching veteran, who was last a head coach in Dallas and has twice served as an interim head coach in the league. The first time came in 1985 when his father Bum Phillips stepped down with the Saints, the second was in 2003 when Dan Reeves resigned as Atlantas coach with three games left. “Thirty-three years Ive been either a co-ordinator on one side of the ball or a head coach,” Phillips said. “I think experience helps. I hope it does in this case. Im pretty familiar with what (to do).” Phillips has had a tough month with the recent death of his father and being thrust into this role with Kubiak ailing. Hes talked to the team about dealing with adversity and thinks the players will respond well Sunday. “A lots been going on in my life and, I told the players, too, weve lost some games, but there are tougher things than losing some ballgames that people have overcome,” Phillips said. “And so we can overcome losing ballgames if people can overcome some of the things that have happened.” Offensive co-ordinator Rick Dennison will take over the play-calling duties, with input from Phillips, when the Texans travel to Arizona on Sunday. Dennison doesnt believe much will change offensively with Kubiak out. “Ive been with him for a long time and we have the same philosophy on how to win football games,” Dennison said. “I would say just being around him in this position for the last four years we would be very similar. I dont know that were exact, but were very similar.” The team said Monday the 52-year-old Kubiak suffered a transient ischemic attack at halftime of Sundays loss to Indianapolis. He was released from the hospital on Tuesday and is expected to make a full recovery, but there is no timetable for his return to the team. Phillips said he has spoken to Kubiak, but they didnt really talk football. “Hes left it to me and he said: Do what you think,” Phillips said. Dennison said Kubiak told him hed like to come by the stadium in the next few days, but he wasnt sure if that would actually happen. “I called him back and (Kubiaks wife) Rhonda answered the phone and I was in a bit of trouble,” Dennison said. “So Im going to try to stay away.” Phillips mixed up some things at practice Wednesday in an attempt to help the team get back on track. Cornerback Johnathan Joseph said Wednesdays practice was “energetic” and that it ran smoothly without Kubiak. “We are changing a few things in practice that we think will help,” Phillips said. “We feel like we need to change something. Its not going the way we want it to go, so we have to change some things.” Case Keenum will make his third start Sunday after solid performances in the first two. Phillips said Keenum has earned the right to start and has been impressed with his ability to make big plays. Hes completed 11 passes of 25 yards or more in his two starts combined as the Texans have dropped those games by four total points. Téma: Jak postupovat / e did a good KANSAS CITY, Mo. — James Loney delivered the clutch hit for Tampa Bay after Chris Archer kept Kansas City from getting one. Loney hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Rays over the Royals 1-0 on Tuesday night following an impressive pitchers duel between top young arms. Archer wriggled out of two bases-loaded jams and went seven innings. Royals rookie Yordano Ventura dazzled in his season debut, holding Tampa Bay to two hits in six innings. “I saw some really good pitching on the other side,” Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. “Archer was on top of his game. This guy had a big league two-seamer, 92-95 mph, throwing strikes with it, real efficient with his two-seamer and his slider. He had some nasty stuff working.” Loneys grounder to right scored Wil Myers, who snapped an 0-for-15 slump when he reached on an infield single to start the ninth. Myers advanced on a two-out wild pitch by Greg Holland (0-1). “Loney is a very calm guy,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “He does not get excited and I appreciate that about him.” Loneys grounder got past a diving Danny Valencia at second base. “I wanted to hit it hard,” Loney said. “You always want to hit it hard and hopefully not at somebody.” Holland said he would have liked to have that last pitch to Loney back. “With first base open and essentially the winning run on second, Ive got to get that ball down a little more,” Holland said. “Ive got to be smarter than that. In that mindset, I didnt execute the pitch and it cost us the game.” Joel Peralta (1-1) struck out Valencia with the bases loaded, and Grant Balfour worked the ninth for his second save. Ventura walked none and struck out six, including Myers three times. “Ventura was really throwing good fastballs, triple digits at times,” Yost said. “He threw some good breaking balls, but really had a good changeup working to keep them off balance. He matched up against a good pitcher and came out with nothing to show for it.” Venturas initial scheduled start in Detroit was rained out, so he was making his first appearance since March 29 in spring training. “Its a lot of time between pitching,” Ventura said. “Its my job. No matter how many days off, you have to do your job. I was just glad I was able to do my job today. Im used to pitching every five days. Thats what I want. It was a little tough.” Archer pitched out of bases-loaded, one-out jams in the third and sixth. He induced Eric Hosmer to ground into a double play to end the third. In the sixth, Archer retired Alex Gordon on an infield popup and Valencia on a grounder to leave the bases full. “I had confidence,” Archer said. “I didnt at any point think I was going to fail. The way we were playing D I felt like we were going to get it done.” The Royals loaded the bases again in the eighth against Jake McGee and Peralta, but Valencia looked at three straight strikes from Peralta to end the inning. Mike Moustakas, hitless in his first 21 at-bats this season, opened the Royals ninth with a single to centre but went no further. Tampa Bay missed an opportunity in the eighth when Royals reliever Wade Davis walked Matt Joyce and plunked pinch-hitter Logan Forsythe with a pitch. Davis recovered to strike out Yunel Escobar and David DeJesus. NOTES: The Rays placed LHP Matt Moore on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow injury. An MRI exam was inconclusive and Moore will see Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday or Thursday for further exams. … The Rays recalled LHP Jeff Beliveau from Triple-A Durham. … Tests revealed Royals 2B Omar Infante has a sprained jaw, but no fracture, after being struck by a pitch from Heath Bell in the seventh inning Monday. Infante, who needed six stiches, will be evaluated over the next 48 hours, but the preliminary diagnosis was that he would not miss many games. … Valencia made his first big league start at second base. … The Royals lost for the first time since Aug. 30, 2013, at Toronto when allowing four hits or fewer. Téma: Jak postupovat / ed Sox for Game 6 of the W NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguezs lawsuit claiming Major League Baseball and Commissioner Bud Selig went on a “witch hunt” to force him from the sport has been moved from state to federal court. Major League Baseball filed a notice of removal Monday, saying claims by the New York Yankees third baseman are governed by federal law. The lawsuit, originally filed Thursday in New York Supreme Court in Manhattan, was assigned to U.S. District Judge Lorna G. Schofield, who joined the bench in December, and U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin N. Fox. Rodriguezs legal team could file a motion asking that the case be returned to state court. One of his lawyers, Joseph Tacopina, said in a statement that the league “knows that these state law claims properly belong where they were filed, in the New York state court.” The legal action comes during a grievance by the Major League Baseball Players Association to overturn a 211-game suspension given to Rodriguez by MLB on Aug. 5 for alleged violations of baseballs drug agreement and labour contract. A hearing began last week before arbitrator Fredric Horowitz. After a week of sessions, three additional days are scheduled starting Oct. 15, and more days may be needed. A decision is unlikely before winter. In his lawsuit, Rodriguez claimed MLB and Selig tried to smear the three-time AL MVP and cost him tens of millions of dollars in an attempt to cover up Seligs alleged past inaction on performance-enhancing drugs. The lawsuit claimed Selig hoped to redeem himself by going after Rodriguez. MLB responded by calling Rodriguezs actions “desperate” and a violation of the confidentiality provisions of the league and unions Joint Drug Agreement. On Friday, Rodriguez sued the Yankees team physician and a New York hospital in New York Supreme Court in the Bronx, claiming they mishandled his medical care during the 2012 American League playoffs by letting him play after failing to inform him that a test revealed an injury to his left hip joint. The lawsuit said Rodriguez then further injured himself, forcing him to suffer hospitalization, disability and emotional distress. During the 2012 post-season, Rodriguez hit .120 (3 for 25) with no RBIs before undergoing left hip surgery in January that prevented him from rejoining the Yankees until August. Téma: Jak postupovat / sales for the Aug HOUSTON — Houston rookie George Springer has had a month to remember. And hes not about to let up. Springer hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Astros extended their winning streak to six with a 3-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Springers shot to left off Preston Guilmet (0-1) extended the rookies hitting streak to 11 games and was his seventh homer in his last seven games. The shot barely got over the left field wall. “I was screaming at it,” Springer said. “I was saying Go, go, go and it went. So thank you, baseball.” Springers 10 home runs in May extended his Astros rookie record and tied him for the third most long balls by a rookie in May with Jose Canseco, Wally Joyner and Walt Dropo. Mark McGwire set the rookie record for home runs in May with 15 in 1987. “What a guy,” Houston manager Bo Porter said of Springer. “Its been pretty impressive. Its fun to watch. Its almost must-see TV.” Springer said he was happy to help the Astros continue winning and gave a lot of credit to the man hitting before him in the lineup, Jose Altuve, who had three hits. “The guy thats on base, and its always Jose Altuve,” Springer said of his late game poise. “Hes always on base, and with him on base, I understand that hes a threat. With him on base, if they miss, I have to hit it.” Springer became the first Astros rookie to hit seven home runs in seven games and first Houston player to do it since Morgan Ensberg in 2006. Ensberg, however, hit his seven home runs over a six-game span. “Hes an exciting player,” Porter said. “At any moment, he can change the game with one swing. It doesnt matter if hes 0 for 3 or 3 for 3, he has the ability to impact the game every time he steps into the batters box.” Brad Peacock allowed a run on six hits with eight strikeouts in six innings. Peacock, who was scratched prior to his scheduled start May 24 at Seattle with forearm soreness, went six innings for the fifth straight start. Porter said it was the best Peacock had pitched all season. Peacock said it was the best he had felt all year, and he was able to locate his pitches. “I went out there, I wasnt scared,” Peacock said. “I threw my fastball, the team came up with some big plays. Springer got the homer and the team got the win. Thats all you can ask for.” Josh Fields (1-3) threw two scoreless innings for the win, and Chad Qualls pitched the ninth for his fourth save. Ubaldo Jimenez allowed one run on three hits with eight strikeouts in six innings. Jimenez had struggled in his last two outings, allowing 10 runs in nine innings. “I was able to get a little bit deeper in the game and thats always good,” Jimenez said. “Hopefully I get deeper than that in my next game. I felt good. I was able to be there for the team.” Houston could not take capitalize with runners in scoring position, going 0 for 11 against Jimenez and finishing 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position with the lone hit being Springers home run. Nelson Cruz remained hot, extending his hit streak to 10 games with two hits, including an RBI single in the fourth that tied it at 1. The Orioles losing streak reached three games. “Its not always going to click together,” Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said of the Orioles inconsistency of late. “Youre hoping one part of the game is good enough to offset another and we have for the most part. I have a lot of confidence that our best baseball is ahead of us. Tonight we just didnt swing the bats well enough Ubaldo deserved a better fate.” Jason Castro scored from third on a wild pitch by Jimenez in the second on a close play at the plate to make it 1-0. Téma: Jak postupovat / o providing them with a Leading up to SportsCentres Year In Review on Christmas Eve, TSN and TSN.ca look back at each of the Top 10 stories of 2013. Today, we look back at the rapid rise of basketball in our country. In Canada, hockey has always been – and will most likely always be – the sport that produces the most professional talent. Yet over the past year it seems basketball north of the border is turning a corner. Most expected it wouldnt truly start until 2014. Andrew Wiggins, the freshman forward from Vaughan, Ont., is dominating in college ball with the Kansas Jayhawks and should go first overall in next Junes NBA draft. Well that all might still happen, but Wiggins wont be the first Canadian to ever be selected No. 1. That title went to Torontos Anthony Bennett of the University of Nevada, taken first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 6-8 forward hasnt had a stellar year – already getting unfairly booed by the Cleveland faithful – but the 20-year-old was never chosen with the expectation hed coast to a Rookie of the Year award. Bennetts potential and raw athleticism was what caught the Cavaliers eye. Regardless, it made history and it was a proud moment for Canadian sports fans. With Wiggins playing well in Kansas and being compared to a superstar-type player, the future is looking pretty decent. And Wiggins and Bennett are just the tip of the iceberg. On both the college and pro stage, Canucks are popping up at a rapid rate – and Canada could have the chance to not only qualify, but compete for a medal in the 2016 Olympics and beyond. The Cavaliers Tristan Thompson (Toronto), the Magics Andrew Nicholson (Mississauga), the Celtics Kelly Olynyk (Toronto), the Spurs Cory Joseph (Toronto) and the Lakers Robert Sacre (North Vancouver) are all young, talented and ready to put Canada on the map of basketball relevance. Dont forget about two-time NBA champion Joel Anthony (Montreal) of the Miami Heat. When it comes to NCAA ball – besides Wiggins – theres Kevin Pangos (Holland Landing, Ont.) of the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Nik Stauskas (Etobicoke, Ont.) of the Michigan Wolverines. Both teams are ranked in the Top 25 and will look to continue the trend when March Madness rolls around. The days of looking up to Victoria, B.C.s Steve Nash as the lone productive Canadian in the Association are long gone. Whether its better coaching at the grassroots level, more interest in the sport or just sheer luck, Canada is improving on the hardwood. This is the golden age of Canadian basketball and its only getting started. James Naismith would be proud. . Canadas strong showing throughout the World Cup season has qualified it for the maximum number of spots in every short-track speedskating event at the Sochi Games in February. "With the beginning to the season that Ive had, beginning with the Canadian trials in August, I have nothing to doubt in myself.Dwayne De Rosarios return to Toronto FC is expected to be confirmed later this week after the former MLS MVP agreed to a contract with his hometown team. Canadas all-time leading goal scorer was selected by TFC in the MLS Re-Entry Draft before Christmas and I understand the two sides have now successfully negotiated a deal, although he hasnt yet put pen to paper. Whether or not this move is the right one for Toronto FC depends on how much they are paying, but with financially prudent general manager Tim Bezbatchenko at the helm, its a good bet the salary cap hit will be low, with the contract fully stocked with bonuses depending on the performances of De Rosario and the team. I was at Air Canada Centre in Toronto on the day De Rosario was first introduced as a Toronto FC player back in December 2008 following a highly successful spell with the Houston Dyamo. It was a heralded homecoming of a player who was one of the most decorated in Major League Soccer – a winner, coming to his hometown as a signature signing for a club heading into its third year of existence. For two seasons, De Ro lived up to the billing, but the club struggled through managerial instability and failed to qualify for the playoffs. However, his personal impact during his first spell with the club was overshadowed by the way in which he exited Toronto early in the 2011 season – a year when he went on to play for both the New York Red Bulls and DC United, and was then named MLS MVP. The infamous cheque signing and then the training spell at Celtic took the shine off his time in Toronto, but now there is a chance to put things right. De Rosario will now have the opportunity to finish a wonderful MLS career in his hometown. He could probably have earned more moneyy elsewhere, but if he can make the desired impact, he has the potential to heal the wounds felt by some fans following his 2011 departure.dddddddddddd. Its not only a chance for De Rosario to make amends, but also for Toronto FC, under new management, to show the club has completely moved on from past failings. This time around, De Rosarios role will be much different. He wont necessarily be the focal point on the pitch, but more a member of the supporting cast for the already signed Brazilian forward Gilberto and the expected arrival of England international forward Jermain Defoe. For a player who turns 36 in May, it seems an ideal scenario. De Rosario is coming off a frustrating season in 2013. His DC United team finished bottom of the Eastern Conference and he scored an MLS career low of just three goals. So it is a much needed change of scenery with all of the financial benefits and home comforts that being in Toronto will bring. For the club, it is a gamble worth taking. It sends a positive message about the teams new management, while also providing them with a valuable piece of the puzzle currently being assembled by Bezbatchenko. De Rosario may be getting to the latter stages of his career, but hes been included in the MLS Best XI six times and still has plenty to offer. In his first spell with the club, he scored 27 goals in 57 MLS appearances during which time he was also named team captain. Its unlikely the Scarborough, Ontario native will produce those goal-scoring exploits this time around but he will more than adequately fit the role that will be asked of him. And in my opinion, the addition of the Canadian veteran is another shrewd addition by a club that appears to be moving in the right direction. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / rwolves were again th It wasnt the sort of performance you would expect from a side chasing for a playoff place. With the opportunity to close to within a point of the postseason positions, Vancouver Whitecaps turned in a display in front of their home fans on Saturday that lacked energy, cohesion and ideas. Real Salt Lake walked out of BC Place with a 1-0 win, despite having left most of their regular starters at home, and they thoroughly deserved the three points. The visitors took the lead inside ten minutes when Devon Sandoval headed in a superb cross from Lovel Palmer, and through the following 80 minutes, the Whitecaps were hardly able to muster an effort on goal. It was an incredibly flat performance from a team that had everything to play for, and it was summed up perfectly by Caps midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker following the game. “We got taught a footballing lesson today,” Reo-Coker told my TSN colleague Perry Solkowski. “They have a system that they stick to through the whole season and everybody knows their roles. They had a lot more desire than us.” Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie didnt sugarcoat things either. “I thought it was a terrible performance from everybody, and that means it was a terrible performance from the coach as well,” he said. Real Salt Lake played really well – a team of reserves who all stepped up and proved that the Utah club has the deepest squad in MLS. However, the Whitecaps also made it fairly easy for them. We have seen many times at BC Place earlier in the season that the Whitecaps are capable of playing an attacking, entertaining style of play, scoring plenty of goals, but that wasnt evident at all against Real Salt Lake. As has been the case this year, Vancouver certainly missed the injured Kenny Miller, but they still had plenty of attacking weapons available. The problem was those weapons appeared fairly blunt. There was little creativity and an inability to break down a very well organized Real Salt Lake team. Perhaps the biggest disappointment was the lack of urgency. Playing at home against a massively understrength opposition, the Whitecaps just never seemed to get going. Even when Rennie made changes early in the second half bringing on the speedsters Darren Mattocks and Kekuta Manneh, the Caps produced very little to trouble the opposition. In past games, the injection of Mannehs pace has changed games, but both Manneh and Mattocks provided little impact off the bench. It wasnt until the 93rd minute of the match that we saw the first attack-minded burst from midfield by Reo-Coker. In fact, Real Salt Lake managed the midfield battle for most of the match, dominating possession and preventing the Caps from gaining any momentum going forward. While the Whitecaps chances of making the postseason are mathematically still very much alive, there is little chance of them picking up the necessary points from the remaining four games, judging by the display they produced at the weekend. It was even more puzzling following on from a spirited and highly effective showing in Montreal a week earlier when the Whitecaps came away from Stade Saputo with a 3-0 victory. Its now just two wins in 11 matches for Vancouver – far away from the form needed to challenge for the top five. If the Whitecaps are to keep their hopes alive, they will need to achieve two firsts. Objective number one is to win against Portland Timbers on Sunday, something they are yet to do in Major League Soccer. They will then have to go into Seattle the following Wednesday (live on MLS on TSN) and win at Century Link Field for the first time. The Timbers and Sounders have improved greatly this season, as have Colorado Rapids. At this stage, it seems the Whitecaps havent been able to keep up. The Media Match The day before the Whitecaps played against Real Salt Lake, the club held its first – and soon to be annual – Media Invitational Tournament. It was a fantastic event with around 50 media members attending and split into four teams playing three matches each on the BC Place pitch. If you listen to our TSN FC podcast or follow along on Twitter, you will know the stakes were high, with plenty of banter going back and forth in the days leading up to the tournament. For the record – because my broadcast partner Jason De Vos will try and twist the story – I actually scored three goals, one in each of the games. The highlight was a stunning back-post volley against Jasons team. We ended up tying the match 4-4, and post-game Jason tweeted: “To his credit, Luke played well.” Make sure you check out this weeks podcast for a full recap of the event. Along the way to sweeping a home-and-home set against the Jazz, Alexey Shved left with a broken nose and Kevin Martin sliced open his right pinkie. “Its crazy. I cant remember two people bleeding like that in the same game,” said Nikola Pekovic, who had 18 points and nine rebounds. Love leads the league with 35 double-doubles but he thought it was passing and teamwork that sealed a sweep of the home-and-home set with the Jazz. “Ive been passing the ball all season and guys were converting,” said Love, who had eight assists. “I didnt get too many looks and didnt convert many from the 3-point line so I had to figure other ways to be effective.” Ricky Rubio has returned to his spontaneous, free-flowing style and had 11 points and 13 assists for the Wolves, who snapped a seven-game losing streak in Utah. “Tonight was a pure team effort,” Pekovic said. “We are all good friends between us. On the good nights everything is fine, of course.” It was another good night for Minnesota as Corey Brewer scored 19 points and Martin contributed 18. Each time the Jazz threatened to get close in the fourth quarter, J.J. Barea hit big baskets and finished with 15 points to keep the Jazz at bay. “I think we needed that win (on Saturday) and we had a great team effort defensively. It carried on to tonight,” Barea said. Gordon Hayward returned from a five-game absence to lead the Jazz with 27 points, but he was the only starter in double figures. The Jazz went 2-3 in Haywards absence, including a 98-72 road loss to Minnesota where Utah set a record for worst field goal percentage in franchise history at 28.8 per cent. “It felt good to be back out there,” Hayward said. “But we just didnt get stops tonight. They were too effective offensively.” A team that seemed disjointed and frustrated during a three-game losing streak a week ago, the Timberwolves apparently needed a couple of matchups with the Jazz to break out off the funk.dddddddddddd The Timberwolves ran crisp sets and were eager to make the extra pass to wide-open teammates. Minnesota led 84-62 at the end of three quarters as it assisted on 23 of its first 30 field goals. Picking up right where they left off on Saturday, the Wolves using a 17-2 run in the first quarter to stake a commanding lead that ballooned to 18 points. Love hit a 3-pointer and Brewer dunked to make the score 30-12 in the first quarter. “I was pleased with the way we came out and controlled the game from beginning to end,” Minnesota coach Rick Adelman said. “I thought (the Jazz) would come out with so much energy at the start of the game.” Instead the Timberwolves made the Jazz look flat and flustered and soon they were on their way to consecutive wins for the first time since they beat Washington and Milwaukee on Dec. 27-28. Hayward was having the best three-game set of his career before injuring his left hip and being sidelined five games. But he scored early and often despite the layoff. His teammates, though, seemed powerless to stop Minnesotas attack. Alec Burks had 18 points but the Jazz missed starting centre Derrick Favours, who was out with a right hip injury. “Defensively, he protects the rim for us,” Utah coach Ty Corbin said. “We missed that.” Of course, Minnesotas plan to was get the ball to Love and Pekovic. “We knew we had the advantage against them inside. After last game, we wanted to keep doing that. We had a nice balance of looking at those two guys, plus getting other open looks,” Adelman said. After losing 14 of their first 15 games, the Jazz have been playing about .500 and hadnt lost two consecutive since losing to San Antonio and Miami on Dec. 14 and 16. The Timberwolves were again the aggressors against the Jazz and made 22 of 24 free throws. Haywards 3-pointer drew the Jazz 58-47, but Minnesota responded with a 10-0 surge that ended with Martins three-point play. NOTES: The Timberwolves wore their black short-sleeved uniforms. . The Jazz had three points nullified in the third quarter because Trey Burkes 3-pointer came after the shot clock expired, the ruling came during a time out more than four minutes of elapsed game time after the shot. . The Jazz are 1-18 when Enes Kanter starts. He had four points and six rebounds. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ary of State Condoleezza Rice wo SPARTA, Ky. — As Austin Dillon proved again at Kentucky Speedway, being good creates its own fate. Although misfortune by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Elliott Sadler factored in the outcome of the Nationwide Series race Saturday, Dillons ability to take advantage resulted in victory. Starting on the pole and always in contention, the rookie positioned himself to pass Sadler when his teammates Chevy fell off the pace with steering issues with 50 laps left. Nothing lucky about that. “It wasnt a gift by (any) means,” Dillon said after leading the final 50 laps to complete a season sweep at the 1.5-mile oval. “We had a great car in practice, we adjusted on it (Friday) and today and it got really good. Were in victory lane and proud to represent the speedway with the sweep.” Dillon, who dominated the June race by leading 192 of 200 laps, led four times for 65 laps this time around in the iconic No. 3 Chevy owned by grandfather Richard Childress. He won comfortably over Sam Hornish Jr., Brendan Gaughan, Drew Herring and Sadler, who seemed headed for his fifth win after leading 93 laps. Sadlers consolation was reclaiming the points lead from Stenhouse, whose pit-road collision with Eric McClure on lap 33 helped create an opportunity that Dillon ultimately seized. But he lamented what might have been given his own wide-open chance. “It seems like whoever gets the points lead messes up,” said Sadler, who leads Stenhouse by four points and Dillon by 19 with six races remaining. "I messed up at Richmond and Ricky had some bad luck today, and I think its going to go back and forth from now all the way to Homestead. “At the time we were leading the race and running fast, I felt like I could make a big gain if we won the race. But were up four points and will go on to Dover.” Stenhouses pit-road accident initially benefited Sadler. Leading the race as he pitted during a competition caution, the defending series champion collided with McClure exiting his stall. The prolonged pit stop for repairs opened the door for Sadler to take the race and series lead, and he went on to lead 93 of the next 98 laps with Dillon following before the handling issue created opportunity for his Richard Childress Racing teammate. After grabbing the points lead from Sadler last week with a win at Chicago, Stenhouse started off looking as if he would extend his roll. He started second but moved past Dillon on the first lap, and his No. 6 Ford seemed to strongest early on. Things unraveled after a competition yellow at lap 30. Stenhouse quickly backed up his car to make repairs, but the damage was done. He restarted 27 spots behind Dillon in 28th and subsequent pit stops eventually left him three laps behind Sadler, who took the lead from Hornish on lap 47. Stenhouse finished 17th. “Our first mistake was on pit road,” he said. “It was one thing after another. We rebounded to finish 17th, but we made way too many mistakes.” With 80 laps left, Sadler held a 1-second lead over Dillon, with Kurt Busch 4 seconds back. At that point Busch was making a strong comeback after starting from the rear for the driver change. The 2004 Sprint Cup series champion flew in from Loudon, N.H., just before the race to drive the No. 54 Toyota that Crafton qualified 14th. Busch quickly went to work in the car owned by his brother Kyle, standing 16th after 23 laps and fourth after 50. But the car started smoking on lap 125. Within seven laps, Busch was in the garage.
