Téma: Jak postupovat / -ten finishes, including thre NEW YORK — Ichiro Suzuki scored on Brandon Workmans wild pitch with two outs in the ninth inning Sunday, and the New York Yankees overcame Mariano Riveras blown save for a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox that prevented a four-game sweep. Robinson Cano hit a two-run double and the Yankees finally quieted Bostons booming bats behind starter Hiroki Kuroda. They took a one-run lead into the ninth inning before Rivera, called on to start the eighth, gave up a wind-aided homer to streaking Will Middlebrooks. Suzuki hit a one-out single off Workman (5-3) in the bottom half, stole second and advanced to third on Vernon Wells fly to right. Workman then fired a high pitch that deflected off the mitt of catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and caromed away off the backstop, allowing Suzuki to score easily. Boston, which began the day with the best record in the majors and an 8 1/2-game cushion in the AL East, had its five-game winning streak snapped. The Red Sox simply outslugged New York in the first three games of the series, giving them a whopping 54 runs, 17 homers and 64 hits during a four-game span that ended Saturday. Finally on Sunday, some pitching. After getting big hits from Cano and Mark Reynolds off Boston starter Jon Lester, the Yankees clung to a 3-2 lead through seven innings. With setup man David Robertson and left-hander Boone Logan sidelined by sore arms, the 43-year-old Rivera (5-2) was brought in to start the eighth for the first time since June 20, 2006, at Philadelphia. Baseballs career saves leader got through his first inning with little difficulty, but Middlebrooks led off the ninth and lofted high fly to right field. Suzuki initially broke in on the ball, then scurried back as the wind caught hold of it and dropped it a few rows deep beyond the famous short porch at Yankee Stadium. It was Middlebrooks fourth home run in five days. Rivera, hands on his hips, stood on the mound with a puzzled, exasperated look on his face and appeared to mouth the word “unbelievable.” He retired the next three batters though, and the Yankees regrouped to finish a 6-4 homestand that keeps them in the wild-card hunt. Kuroda tossed six gritty innings and left in line for his first win since Aug. 12. Shawn Kelley retired Dustin Pedroia on a grounder with two runners in scoring position to end the seventh. It was Kelleys first outing since he was roughed up by Baltimore last Sunday. The right-hander had been sidelined because of inflammation in his triceps. After allowing 34 runs in the first three games of the series, the Yankees appeared to be in trouble again when Kuroda gave up consecutive doubles to David Ortiz and Mike Carp to start the second. But the right-hander fought through a 38-pitch inning and kept the score 1-0 by retiring Daniel Nava on a bases-loaded grounder following a pair of walks. Kuroda threw 92 pitches in the first four innings and 117 in all. Lester yielded three runs and 10 hits in eight effective innings. New York tied it in the fourth. Alex Rodriguez singled and scored from first base when Reynolds doubled to deep centre. Lester ran into some tough luck in the fifth. Chris Stewart blooped a one-out single to snap an 0-for-23 slump before Suzuki and Vernon Wells fisted soft singles that landed just out of the reach of shortstop Stephen Drew. That loaded the bases for Alfonso Soriano, who struck out. Cano then lined a two-run double over Middlebrooks at third to put the Yankees ahead 3-1. Ortiz hit a leadoff double in the sixth and scored on Saltalamacchias RBI groundout. Stewart, hit by a pitch in the third, was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the sixth with a bruised left foot. He was sent for precautionary X-rays. NOTES: Bostons last four-game sweep of the Yankees came at Fenway Park in June 1990. Téma: Jak postupovat / s Morning News (http://da MADRID, Spain — About 50,000 Real Madrid fans packed the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday to celebrate the clubs record 10th European Cup with a blockbuster show befitting its galactico image. Real beat city rival Atletico Madrid 4-1 after extra time Saturday night in the Champions League final to set off the celebrations, which carried on through the Spanish capital night after the European champions arrived home in the early hours. The celebration started with the teams open-top bus cruising into Cibeles Square, where team captains Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos draped a club flag around the statue in the centre of the fountain as Real does after every trophy victory. The party continued later Sunday night at the Bernabeu, where a laser show and the chants of thousands of fans honoured Madrids players and coaching staff in a rock concert atmosphere. Coach Carlo Ancelotti led the crowd in singing a celebratory song that was recorded especially for the occasion. Madrid had already recorded the song before ending its obsessive 12-year wait for “La Decima” with Saturdays victory in Lisbon. Madrids players were introduced one by one, before Casillas and Ramos hoisted the European Cup high at centre stage as streamers sprayed confetti and Queens “We are the champions” was played over the loudspeaker. “Thanks for waiting,” Casillas told the crowd amid chants of his name, before Cristiano Ronaldo took the microphone to lead a chant of “Hala Madrid!” — a traditional rallying cry for the club. With president Florentino Perez watching on, the team paraded European footballs most prestigious trophy around the Bernabeu in a lap of honour that Ronaldo recorded on his mobile phone as teammate Gareth Bale quietly soaked in the atmosphere. Several players showed off new looks as Luka Modric cut his trademark locks while dark-haired Dani Carvajal bleached his beard blond. Real was also welcomed to city hall in an afternoon ceremony to celebrate the victory in the first final between clubs from the same city. Téma: Jak postupovat / re were the best EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Two months ago, around the time the Minnesota Vikings were losing their second preseason game, Adrian Peterson was given some surprising news. The star running back says he found out then he had a 2-year-old son living in Sioux Falls, S.D., named Tyrese Robert Ruffin. He had been working with Tyreses mother to arrange a meeting with the boy when he received a call last week that the child was in the hospital with severe injuries. Peterson raced to South Dakota last Thursday, where he saw little Tyrese for the first time. The boy died a day later in an alleged case of child abuse, and Peterson has been trying to come to grips with it ever since. Peterson attended Tyreses funeral Wednesday and returned to Minnesota for practice on Thursday. His voice wavered when he discussed Tyrese publicly for the first time, trying to grapple with mourning the death of a son he never got to know. “I was planning on seeing him. I had a talk with his mom and we got some things together as far as financially helping her,” Peterson said. “Unfortunately, this situation took place. Its devastating.” A man the boys mother was dating, 27-year-old Joseph Patterson, is being held on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery. Tyrese died after Patterson was arrested, and prosecutors plan to convene a grand jury to consider more serious charges. “It was a difficult day, just taking in the circumstance and the whole situation,” Peterson said of the funeral. “A child was buried. Thats difficult for anyone.” Peterson played against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, rushing for 62 yards on 10 carries in a 35-10 loss, and he plans to play against the New York Giants on Monday night. Its been a theme for Peterson for nearly his entire life — football has been a refuge in difficult times ever since he was a youth. “A lot of people wont ever understand the situation that Im in and see it the way Im seeing the situation,” he said. “Its tough, but Im able to deal with that and got a good supporting cast around me thats been supporting me through this tough time.” Peterson thanked his teammates and the Vikings organization for their support. “Theyve been great, organization, teammates, theyve been supporting me as well,” he said. “I cant tell you how many calls Ive gotten and texts from the guys up top in the organization and players just making sure that Im OK and Im doing well.” He has always prided himself on finding the positivity even in the darkest of times — and now he finds himself searching again. “Im standing strong, man. I am,” Peterson said. “My main focus has been on my son and their family down there in Sioux Falls. Just trying to wrap my head around things and trying to stay focused and play ball as well. So things have been tough, but I can handle a lot. Im built for anything that comes my way. This right here will pass.” Peterson said he has been in touch with authorities in South Dakota to stay on top of the proceedings and didnt expect to miss any more time this season to deal with the situation. “I have the contacts that I need to be able to stay involved as far as the investigation,” he said. Téma: Jak postupovat / runner-up both times. Garcia, CLEVELAND — Dont ask Maurice Cheeks why his team is so successful away from home. The Detroit Pistons coach cant explain it. “I dont have any theories why that is,” he said. “I just dont know.” Josh Smith scored 25 points, Brandon Jennings added 21 and the Pistons continued their domimant play on the road with a 115-92 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night. The Pistons have won seven of their last eight away from home, including victories against defending NBA champion Miami and Indiana, which has the best record in the Eastern Conference. While Cheeks cant come up with a reason, reserve guard Chauncey Billups, a veteran of 17 seasons, managed to put his finger on something. “On the road, all we have is us,” he said. “We know we have to stick together when their crowds get going and they go on runs.” The Pistons went on plenty of runs in their latest road success. Detroit went ahead for good midway through the first quarter and built a 21-point lead late in the first half. The margin reached 28 points in the fourth quarter as the Pistons rolled to their biggest win of the season. Jennings also had 13 assists for Detroit, which placed seven players in double figures. Kyrie Irving scored 21 points for Cleveland, which has lost four of five. “We got our butts handed to us tonight,” said forward Tristan Thompson. The Cavaliers had shown signs of progress earlier this month, winning three straight and five of six. Cleveland has struggled since, dropping close games to Miami and Portland and losing by 16 points to a short-handed Chicago team on Saturday. “Our sense of urgency the last two ballgames has been non-existent,” Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. Cavaliers centre Andrew Bynum was scoreless in 22 minutes, missing all 11 shots from the field and getting seven rebounds. Detroit is 6-10 on its own court and was coming off home losses to Charlotte and Houston, but took control early. Smith scored 10 points in the first quarter when Detroit shot 56 per cent. Smith hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions late in the second quarter that stretched the lead to 56-35. The Pistons were 22 of 41 from the field in the first half and took a 58-40 lead to the locker room. Cleveland cut the lead to 10 points in the third quarter, but three baskets by Jennings, including two 3-pointers, five points by Smith and dunks by Andre Drummond on consecutive fast breaks extended the lead back to 89-64. Smith was 10 of 18 from the field and had eight rebounds and three assists in 31 minutes. “Working in the paint is the strength in our game, so Im making a conscious effort to not settle for shots,” Smith said. “Im used to being a little selfish, but I can be a distributor when other guys get hot.” Jennings directed the offence with 13 assists. Drummond had 14 points and 11 rebounds while Greg Monroe scored 11 points and had 11 rebounds. Reserves from both teams played most of the fourth quarter. Thompson scored 17 points for the Cavaliers. Cleveland played without guard Dion Waiters, the teams second-leading scorer, for the third straight game because of tendinitis in his right wrist. Brown is still searching for answers to get his team to play with more consistency. The loss was Clevelands biggest at home since a 125-90 defeat against San Antonio on April 3, 2012. “I dont know if we mentally understand what it takes to keep doing this every time we step out on the floor,” he said. “Were getting hit in the mouth right now and Im interested to see if we can respond the right way.” The Pistons have won seven in a row against the Cavaliers, including four straight in Cleveland. Cheeks coached his 600th career game. He has also coached for Portland and Philadelphia. NOTES: Drummond was given a flagrant foul for knocking Thompson to the floor while the Cavaliers forward drove in the lane in the first quarter. … The Cavaliers were hit with three delay-of-game warnings in the first quarter, resulting in two technical fouls. … Cavaliers rookie F Anthony Bennett — the No. 1 overall pick in the draft — returned after missing two games with the flu. He missed three shots and committed a turnover in six first quarter minutes. Bennett ended the game with seven points. … Cleveland reserve C Tyler Zeller scored a season-high 13 points, all in the fourth quarter. … Drummond recorded his 21st double-double of the season. The Japan forward was presented on Wednesday as an AC Milan player after signing a 3 1/2-year contract on a free transfer from CSKA Moscow.LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Barely able to tie his shoes three days ago, Tiger Woods is ready to tee it up in the PGA Championship. Woods caused the biggest sensation of the week Wednesday afternoon simply by driving his silver SUV into the parking lot at Valhalla. He has never arrived so late for a major championship and had so little time to prepare — just nine holes at Valhalla, which he had not seen since winning the PGA Championship in 2000. But at least hes playing. That much was in doubt Sunday when he withdrew from the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational because of back pain that made it a chore to switch out of his golf shoes. Woods said he suffered a pinched nerve, but that it was not at all related to back surgery he had March 31 that kept him out of golf for three months. He said his trainer adjusted the area above the sacrum. “Once he put it back in, the spasms went away,” he said. “And from there, I started getting some range of motion.” The latest injury occurred when Woods tried to play a shot from just above a deep bunker on the second hole at Firestone, and his momentum caused him to land hard in the sand. He kept playing, and hit some horrific shots before deciding to withdraw after a tee shot on the ninth hole. That was only his third tournament since his return from surgery, leading to concern that he might be done for the year. “It was a different pain than what I had been experiencing,” Woods said. “So I knew it wasnt the site of the surgery. It was different and obviously it just the sacrum.” His arrival put some life into what had been an ordinary week. Dozens of cameras captured Woods putting on his shoes with ease at his car. He got a big cheer just walking onto the practice range and the crowd was six-deep down the first hole, about like it was for the Ryder Cup at Valhalla six years ago. In the nine holes he played with Steve Stricker, Davis Love III and Harris English, Woods looked the same as he did last week. He drilled his driver down the first fairway. He badly pulled his tee shot on the third hole. It was a mixture of good and bad, about what can be expected from someone who has played only nine rounds in the last five months. “Nothing great,” Woods said. “Its only Wednesday.” Woods tees off Thursday alongside Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington. He simply said, “Yes,” when asked if he expected to win, which seemed to be a tall order considering his return from surgery. Woods missed the cut by four shots at the Quicken Loans National, had his worst 72-hole finish in a major at the British Open and was in the middle of the pack at Firestone when he withdrew.dddddddddddd. Barring a victory, this likely will be his last tournament for at least six weeks. Woods is not eligible for the FedEx Cup playoffs, and he hasnt given U.S. captain Tom Watson much reason to pick him for the Ryder Cup. Woods said he would have to “play well” to give reason for Watson to take him. “Thats the only thing I can control,” Woods said. “Try to go out there and win this event. Thats all Im focused on.” Watson has said he wanted Woods on the team if he was healthy and playing well. About the time Woods arrived at the course, Watson was successfully dodging questions about his chances of making the team. “Its speculation whats going to happen,” Watson said. “I cant tell you whats going to happen with Tiger.” The excitement over his arrival was sure to be tempered by the reality of the task ahead. Not only has Woods gone more than a year without winning — and six years since he last won a major — Rory McIlroy has replaced him as the overwhelming favourite. McIlroy went wire-to-wire at the British Open, then rallied from a three-shot deficit to win the World Golf Championship at Firestone. Sergio Garcia was a runner-up both times. Garcia, who went 0-3 playing in the final group with Woods at three majors, was asked about similarities between the two. “When they are both at their best, to me it seems like Rory is less afraid of hitting driver,” he said. “And when hes hitting it as well as hes hitting it now, hes hitting it very far and quite straight. So its a little bit of an advantage at that point.” Woods might have lost his advantage from being a past champion at Valhalla. He missed the Ryder Cup in 2008 while recovering from knee surgery, and course architect Jack Nicklaus has made plenty of changes, particularly on some of the greens. Woods spent much of his time chipping from collection areas that werent around 14 years ago. “Its a totally different golf course than what I played in 2000,” he said. “The greens are all different. I have my book from 2000 — its useless. Theres some new things that we have to learn out there.” With that, he headed to the back nine to walk the remainder of the course with his putter. He had 15 hours before teeing off in the final major of the year. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / hnnys been healthy, TORONTO — In the immediate moments after the Raptors 101-87 victory over Detroit on Wednesday, Toronto coach Dwane Casey sat down to watch the dying minutes of the Miami-Brooklyn game. Amir Johnson checked the result on his phone. With 20 games left on a thrilling season that sees Toronto poised for a playoff position for the first time in six years, the Raptors are excited, and thinking about little else. “Hell, yeah. Without a doubt, man,” DeMar DeRozan said. “Thats why I work so hard, and it always bugged me going home early, and just sitting there doing nothing. It used to make me so hungry just watching.” DeRozan poured in 25 points, while Johnson scored 20 and grabbed nine rebounds in a game that was no thriller but served its purpose — one step closer to the teams second Atlantic Division title and its first playoff berth since 2008. The Nets, who edged Miami 96-95 on Wednesday, are three games behind Toronto for the division title. “Ive got a lot of friends that play in the playoffs and I had to hear all summer them talking about their experience in the playoffs. It always pushed me even further,” DeRozan said. “You just want to get there. Not even for myself, just for this organization as well. It definitely feels good that were moving in the right direction now.” Kyle Lowry had 19 points and six assists, while Jonas Valanciunas had 13 rebounds to go with eight points for the Raptors (36-27), whove won 10 of their last 13 games. The affair wasnt pretty. The Raptors coughed up double-digit leads a couple of times — including an 18-point third-quarter advantage that the Pistons whittled down to just five — in a game they could have put out of reach far earlier. The Raptors went into the fourth quarter with a narrow 74-69 lead in front of the 18,247 fans at the Air Canada Centre that braved the rare March snowstorm. They scored the first nine points of the fourth to go up by 14. A wide-open three by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope with 8:23 to go cut the Raptors lead to nine points, but that was as close as the struggling Pistons would come. Brandon Jennings topped Detroit (25-40) with 24 points, while Andre Drummond had 16 points and nine rebounds and Greg Monroe had 13 points to go with 10 boards. Ugly or not, the Raptors were happy to tick off another win. “Absolutely. Im ready,” Johnson said, when asked if hes thinking post-season. “Were going to win as many games as we possibly can going down the home stretch, collect these wins.” Casey said hes happy his players are enjoying their success, but warns that theyve got to focus on themselves down the stretch. “It is fun. But weve got to take care of our business. We can watch (what other teams are doing), but if we dont take care of our business, its not worth crap,” the coach said. "Im more concerned with what we do, and how were playing, . . .and losing leads, moreso than anything else. “I hope (the Raptors) are enjoying it but still understand how hard it is, getting there first, and then after you get there, its even harder.” DeRozan, whos in his fifth season in Toronto thus has never stepped on the court for a playoff game, said he has always forced himself to watch the post-season, regardless of how frustrating it was. “I had to, just to understand and see how it was,” he said. “Youre playing the same team possibly seven times in a row. Seeing the different schemes. Just trying to get a knowledge of how its played every single day.” He said hes particularly thrilled to be sharing this seasons success with Johnson, who last made the playoffs with Detroit in 2009. “Thats my dog, man. Its definitely cool,” DeRozan said. “I knew Amir, and Amir knew me when I was running around with the same pair of dirty shoes on, playing basketball. Amir is a helluva dude, how hard he works, and how good of a person he is.” Johnson was key Wednesday night in containing Detroits frontcourt — what Casey had predicted would be a “huge test” for Toronto. The Pistons lead the league in points in the paint and offensive rebounds, thanks largely to Drummond. The Raptors were effective inside, outrebounding Detroit 54-39 and outscoring their visitors in the paint 44-38. Casey wasnt thrilled with the second unit, saying it was “playing in mud a little bit.” “We needed to keep the pace going, I thought the pace slowed down,” he said. “For whatever reason we got stagnant and lost a couple of leads and thats something we have to work on.” The Raptors raced out to a nine-point lead four minutes into the game, stretching it to 14 on a pullup jumper by John Salmons before ending the first quarter up 29-21. The Raptors went almost five minutes without a point to open the second, and Bynum drained a three with 8:37 left in the half to tie the game 29-29. The Raptors managed to cobble together another 10-point lead and took a 52-45 advantage into the dressing room at halftime. A three-pointer by Lowry stretched Torontos lead to 18 points just four-and-a-half minutes into the third but the Raptors couldnt maintain it. The Pistons ended the quarter on a 14-2 run to send the game into the fourth with Toronto leading 74-69. NOTES: Patrick Patterson missed his third straight game with an elbow injury. . . The game was the first of three straight at home. The Raptors host the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday and the Phoenix Suns on Sunday before playing a pair on the road at Atlanta and New Orleans. . . . Midfielder Michael Bradley, one of the teams new designated players, will make his debut, while striker Gilberto could see his first action for TFC in the contest. http://www.shoptheofficialsaints.com/Elite-Pary…. A year ago, as newly appointed general manager Masai Ujiri bided his time and sat out of a lacklustre 2013 draft, this scenario seemed highly improbable. The Raptors, like every other team in the association, had at least one eye on this years rookie crop, one of the most highly touted and eagerly anticipated ever to enter the league. First-year manager Bryan Price said Thursday that Cueto will pitch Monday at home against St. Louis. Price had to sort through a series of minor injuries, including Cuetos tender right shoulder, before making the final determination. Cueto missed a turn this spring because of soreness. “When Johnnys been healthy, hes been our No. 1 starter, legitimately for the previous four years,” Price said. “Keeping him healthy is the key. He only made 11 starts for us last year. Yesterday, I had him long toss. I asked him how he felt after it then made the decision.” Tony Cingrani will pitch the second game. He was the only starter in the rotation without an injury issue this spring. Homer Bailey was skipped with a sore right groin and Mike Leeake had slight pain in his abdomen.dddddddddddd Bailey will start the final game of Cardinal series. Leake will start the first game in New York. Mat Latos will miss at least one start after minor elbow and knee surgery. Alfredo Simon will start the fifth game in New York against the Mets. Brett Marshall is slowed by a strained tendon in his middle finger, and he will see a hand specialist in Phoenix on Friday. Marshall and Devin Mesoraco may join Aroldis Chapman; Jonathan Broxton, who pitched in a minor league game today; Sean Marshall; Latos; Jack Hannahan and Skip Schumaker on the disabled list. Mesoraco hasnt played in 10 days with a strained oblique. “Devin has to play. He has to catch, throw, hit and run. Téma: Jak postupovat / tolerate such abuse Champions Tour golfer Steve Elkington drew plenty of attention over social media on Tuesday, sending out out two comments on Twitter about NFL prospect Michael Sam. “ESPN covering Michael Sam as a gay athlete is embarrassing…” read the first tweet. Hours later, Elkington tweeted, “ESPN reporting Michael Sam is leading the handbag throw at NFL combine…No one else expected to throw today.” Elkington then clarified his remarks to a respondent, tweeting: “Im for Sam Im against ESPN telling me hes gay….” Sam, the Missouri defensive end who was the SEC defensive player of the year, could be the first openly gay player in the NFL if hes drafted in May. They werent Elkingtons first controversial comments made via Twitter. Earlier this month, he made a misogynistic comment on the platform about a female golf writer and later apologized, saying that he had “been drinking.” Late last year, he also made a remark about a fatal helicopter crash in Glasgow that killed eight people. “Helicopter crashes into Scottish pub… Locals report no beer was spilled,” he wrote. During last years Senior British Open at the Royal Birkdale course in Southport, the Australian tweeted: “Couple caddies got rolled by some Pakkis (Pakistanis), bad night for them.” And that followed a Twitter post in which Elkington wrote, “Things about Southport – fat tattooed guy, fat tattooed girl, trash, Pakistani robber guy, [expletive] food.” . The Raptors point guard is widely believed to be next on general manager Masai Ujiris chopping block after the first domino – Rudy Gay, Lowrys best friend – fell last week. The negativity, anger and frustration leaped off the pages. The mood following the weekends matches was dictated by the headlines that screamed loudly at the reader before the article was even perused. Ronaldo hits out at the ref. Wenger puzzled by the decision. Inside the stories told a much deeper story. “Maybe they dont want Real Madrid to win this Liga,” said Ronaldo after his side lost 4-3 to Barcelona in Sundays El Clasico. Just what we need, another accusation that a referee wanted a team to win over another. It was supposed to be a weekend where two of the elite games of the European football calendar could be digested, enjoyed in a way that entertainment is supposed to be sampled. Chelsea were sensational against a hapless, under-prepared Arsenal and Barcelona were just a little bit better than a fantastic Real Madrid in a game played at a breathtaking pace. There were so many storylines to get into, or so you would think. Instead many of the headlines were about a man who didnt even play. The game is officially out of control. Andre Marriners incorrect decision to send off Kieran Gibbs instead of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was unfortunate but shouldnt be surprising given the amount of players who crowded around him the moment a penalty kick was given. El Clasico referee Alberto Undiano Malenco, who made a number of big decisions including a sending off and the awarding of three penalty kicks, was also asked to make split second decisions with players in his face. Many of those players were the greatest in the world but are also the greatest at playacting and conning officials to get one over on the other team, yet when things do not go their way they want to know why the official got it wrong. Except he may not be wrong at all. If he is guilty of something, he is guilty of seeing something different to the accuser. Sometimes, like Marriner at Stamford Bridge, (for the second time this season I might add) he is very wrong and then the real people who lose out are those who follow the game so closely. The greatest thing, for me, about the supposed beautiful game has always been how much emphasis is given on what happens on the field between the players. Go to any pub close to a football ground and listen to the conversations about their favourite team. So often, these fans are not blinded towards their own players. Instead, they are as educated as the people sitting in the press box being paid to cover the sport. They talk about tactics, position switches and refer to their encyclopedic mind when referring to past games. They do not talk about a sport they love by referencing point spreads or how many fantasy points they got that week. Yes, gambling and fantasy sports play a part in their fandom but it is not at the top of their list of priorities like it is fans of other sports. There is so much that happens for them to analyze during 90 minutes that they can, and do, talk about the game for a week until they watch another one. This is what should be happening after Chelsea 6 Arsenal 0 and Real Madrid 3 Barcelona 4. It will be hard to find any games played at such a high level (by three of the four teams anyway) this year than those. And, yes, I am aware it is a World Cup year. Some of the skill on display in those games was absolutely absorbing as was the pace and tempo.dddddddddddd Yet, while we watch such brilliance no thought is given to the referee in the middle of it all until we expect him to make a split second correct decision to ensure fairness. It is an utterly irrational expectation. Here is a game played by 22 of the most exceptional athletes in sport, throw in a rivalry, later in the season, add tempo and speed alongside theatrics and plain old fashion cheating (lets call it what it is) and then place one man, usually much older than most of the players, who is expected to supervise all of them and ensure they stick to the rules by making immediate decisions. Its a process that would be laughed at if the sport were to be created today with rule makers demanded he gets more help. Its a small four letter word that would solve many problems at all levels. Lets help the officials. Lets start on game-defining moments. For as much as we all love the game it is clear that a match, more often than not, only has a handful of these from start to finish. Goals, penalty kick decisions and red cards. No sport can look to get every decision right but the fact that the major game-defining ones are still not getting solved while the game is happening is laughable. Why should a fan or a player leave the game knowing (not thinking) his team were wrongly punished for a significant game-defining moment? A goal, a penalty kick decision and a red card all come at the stoppage of the game on the whistle. At this time, one simple rule needs to be implemented. “No player can approach the referee at this time allowing him time to run to his assistants and communicate with the fourth official if he thinks he needs help to make an absolute decision.” This doesnt require technology or long pauses. It simply gives officials time to ensure they get a clear game-defining decision correct without having a bunch of petulant players all throwing their toys out of their pram in front of his face. Think back to the last time you made a massive decision in your workplace. Were you asked to make it in less than a second with people pointing and shouting in your face? Of course not, because it is ridiculous. So why does soccer allow it? It is not a thing exclusive to sport where emotion and competitiveness can be quoted as an excuse for some of the disgusting behavior on show. Many other sports do not tolerate such abuse towards officials and allow them time to express themselves and get things right. Look at rugby union where captains only are allowed to talk with the referee and where all game-defining decisions (tries, sendings off, etc) can be reviewed between officials. Not every goal needs to be looked at this way but the sport desperately needs this to be an option to give officials time and stop players from constantly affecting their decision-making with abuse. Until that happens stories will continue to flood our newspapers and favorite internet sites about poor refereeing because the petulant babies got in front of a microphone after the match to moan some more. Just make sure you dont feel sorry for any of them. They have created the mess and now have to play a massive part in cleaning it up. ’ ’ ’ |

Letang has played 419 career games over seven seasons, registering 227 points, including 54 goals. “I hope that by making my condition public at this time, I can help other people by encouraging them to seek medical help if they experience some of the symptoms associated with a stroke — regardless of their age or general health,” Letang said. “It obviously was a shock to get the news but Im optimistic that I can overcome this and get back on the ice.” After six weeks of treatment, Letang will be re-evaluated. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / or another fou LAS VEGAS, Nev. – UFC 178, previously announced for Sept. 27 in Toronto, has been moved to Las Vegas and a planned December date in Montreal is also in doubt. The September card features a marquee main event rematch between light-heavyweight champion Jon (Bones) Jones and Swedens Alexander (The Mauler) Gustafsson. Jones, currently rated the UFCs top pound-for-pound fighter, won a hard-fought decision the first time they met at UFC 159 last September in Toronto. UFC president Dana White said there were talks with Toronto, Las Vegas, Sweden and several other U.S. cities about holding the Jones-Gustafsson card. White said the decision to go to Vegas was a business decision. “Its a massive fight,” White told The Canadian Press on Friday after the UFC 175 weigh-in. “Lets just say Vegas made a lot of sense,” he added. “When you have big fights, there are some cities that want big fights worse than other cities do. And Im not saying thats the case with Toronto but Vegas really wanted this fight.” He said he could not announce the exact venue because the deal was not done yet. The UFC usually holds fights at the MGM Grand or Mandalay Bay. While the venues in Vegas are smaller than the Air Canada or Bell Centre, they can charge higher prices. Casinos also welcome the show for the business they bring in. Asked if the UFC 178 venue would be one of the normal Vegas venues, White said: “Should be, yeah.” In January, the UFC announced plans to hold five shows in Canada in 2014: Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto and Vancouver. Vancouver and Quebec City have taken place and a UFC spokesman said the planned Oct. 4 televised Fight Night card at the Halifax Metro Centre is still a go. Tom Wright, managing director for UFC operations in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, said the Toronto show will be pushed back to 2015. As for the planned Dec. 6 show at Montreals Bell Centre, Wright said the UFC had dates reserved for both December and March and should have a decision in several weeks on which it will choose. Wright attributed the changes to the need for fluidity in the fight game. Asked what his message was to Canadian fans in the wake of the schedule upheaval, White said: “Love you guys. I love Canada. I probably couldnt say it enough. But Vegas really wanted this one bad.” The five Canadians shows originally announced for 2014 were up from three in recent years when Toronto and Montreal were constants on the schedule with another city rotating in. The UFC has held 15 pay-per-view shows to date in Canada: six in Montreal, four in Toronto, three in Vancouver and one in each of Calgary and Winnipeg. The Quebec City card was a televised show. Téma: Jak postupovat / ion while wildly waving CALGARY — Mark Giordano returned from a broken ankle Wednesday night and, just like they had been doing before he got injured, the Calgary Flames got right back to winning. In the captains first game back after missing 18 games, Giordano scored a goal and added an assist in the Flames 4-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes. “For me, personally, to get back in, it was a great feeling,” said Giordano, who proudly wore the Flames fire hat after the game, emblematic of being the teams choice of player of the game. “I felt pretty good. Your adrenaline gets going pretty quick and I really didnt feel my ankle at all tonight so thats a great sign.” Giordanos goal was a big one, extending the Flames lead to 3-1 at 11:46 of the second period. On the power play, Giordanos shot from the blue-line changed direction off the stick of Antoine Vermette and eluded goaltender Thomas Greiss. “Scoring always feels great. Obviously, that one was a bit lucky, going off the stick, but it was a great feeling and I felt after that for the rest of the game, we played pretty solid,” said Giordano, who has 11 points in nine games, just four back of his point total in 47 games last year. Giordano sustained the injury Oct. 21 in a win in Los Angeles. At the time, the Flames were 4-2-2. While he was absent, the club struggled going just 5-11-2. “Obviously its a big deal to get your captain back. Hes our leader on and off the ice,” said Flames goaltender Karri Ramo. “Hes been around us the whole time hes been hurt and trying to help the team any way he can, so it was really good to see him out there.” TJ Brodie, Mikael Backlund and Lee Stempniak also scored for Calgary (10-13-4). The Flames have won consecutive games for the first time since Oct. 9 and 11 and won on home ice for just the second time in their last nine tries (2-5-2). Keith Yandle scored the lone goal for Phoenix (16-8-4), who had won 6-2 in Edmonton on Tuesday night. The Coyotes have split the opening two games of their four-game road trip, which continues Friday night in Vancouver. “Got unlucky with a goal at the end of the first period that probably gave them some momentum and we couldnt get it back,” said Phoenix coach Dave Tippett. “We had lots of pucks around the net, lots of opportunities, thats the way it goes sometimes.” Trailing 1-0, the Flames got an important goal with eight seconds left in the first period when Brodies shot deflected in off Phoenix defenceman David Schlemko for his career-high third goal. “That one hit me twice, once in my foot, once in my rear-end and then it goes top shelf,” Schlemko said. “Kind of an unlucky way to end the first period.” The goal sent Calgary to the dressing room even despite being outshot 11-3. Building off that momentum, the Flames played a much better second period, taking the lead at 5:48 when Backlund scored to end an 18-game scoreless drought. “We came in here, we know we didnt have our best first, they sort of took it to us for the first half. But those late goals, they usually are momentum swings and we did a great job of carrying it over into the second,” Giordano said. Up 3-1 heading to the third period, Calgary got insurance at 2:44 in the form of their league-leading sixth short-handed goal. Matt Stajan neatly set up Stempniak on a two-on-one. “I think we dominated that first period so kind of unlucky to come out tied 1-1 but at the same time, you have to come out in the second with a little more jump, we knew they were going to push back and weve got to do a better job there,” said Yandle. The benefactor of all the offence was Ramo. Making his second consecutive start after stopping 21-of-22 shots to beat Los Angeles on the weekend, the 27-year-old Finn was excellent again with 29 saves to improve to 4-4-1. “It was a while that I didnt see a game but you just have to take it game by game and dont think about the situation too much and whats going to happen,” Ramo said. “You just have to play the game and enjoy it.” In the pivotal second period when Calgary bolted into the lead, Ramo had a pair of solid glove saves — first denying Vermette, and in the final minute robbing Mikael Boedker. With Mike Smith getting the night off, Greiss made his fourth start. He had 14 saves to fall to 3-2-0. Notes: Giordano logged 20:28 in ice time and was credited with three blocked shots… Phoenix fell to 12-2-1 when they score first … The Flames won by more than one goal for just the second time. They entered the night 1-9-0 in goals decided by two or more goals … Calgary was coming off its fifth break of three or more days. Téma: Jak postupovat / runner past second. He retired the JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Suspended Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Justin Blackmon has been arrested in Oklahoma on a complaint of marijuana possession. Blackmon, a former standout at Oklahoma State, was arrested Wednesday evening in the Oklahoma City suburb of Edmond. Police said they noticed his sedan go around stopped traffic in an attempt to get into a turn lane. Police spokeswoman Jenny Monroe said an officer detected a “heavy smell of marijuana” coming from the car, and that Blackmon admitted had smoked “a blunt” while driving and had another in his vehicle. Blackmon was arrested and booked into the Edmond jail, where he posted $657 bond. Blackmon was suspended without pay indefinitely last November for repeated violations of the NFLs substance-abuse policy. The Jaguars have been hesitant to cut the fifth overall pick in the 2012 draft. “I know our policy right now, I believe, is its not putting us in a difficult situation having him still be part of our organization in this capacity,” Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said Thursday. “Its really hard by not having conversations with him. I really dont know how hes doing, where hes at. And then when we receive news like this, it creates more discussion. So Im sure those will be conversation well have (about) the direction well go.” General manager Dave Caldwell and owner Shad Khan were scheduled to talk at a kickoff luncheon later in the day. Teammates seemed hardly surprised by Blackmons latest transgression. “Its just a difficult situation,” quarterback Chad Henne said. “Its kind of ongoing. All we can do is pray that he finds a way to get on the right track and save his life.” Added linebacker Paul Posluszny: “This is no longer a football issue. As his teammates, you hope he can do everything he can to get his life squared away. We feel for him and we obviously want the best for him because hes a good kid at heart. We want the best for him. We hope that he can come out of this. … Hes a good guy. Hes fighting through some things now and hopefully hes able to fix that and get his life back on the right.” Blackmon was suspended the first four games of last year for violating the leagues drug policy. He played four games before getting suspended again — at least for a year. NFL rules prohibit the team from having any contact with Blackmon — aside from texts — during his suspension. With Blackmons uncertain future, the Jaguars drafted receivers Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson in the second round of Mays NFL draft. Both could get on the field right away, especially with fellow receiver Ace Sanders suspended the first four games of the season for violation the leagues drug policy. Blackmon has been involved in three substance-related incidents in three years. He was arrested on a misdemeanour DUI charge in Texas in 2010 after officers caught him speeding on a suburban Dallas highway. The charge was later reduced to an underage alcohol possession charge. A little more than a month after the Jaguars drafted him, he was arrested during a traffic stop in Stillwater, Oklahoma, after a breath test allegedly showed his blood alcohol content to be three times the legal limit. A subsequent violation landed him the four-game suspension. Another one got him the indefinite suspension. Blackmon caught 29 passes for 415 yards and a touchdown in the four games he played last season. He was the teams leading receiver during that stretch. While Blackmon sat out the first four games, the Jaguars averaged 224 yards of total offence. In the four games he played, Jacksonville hiked its offensive output to just over 350 yards per game. He has 93 catches for 1,280 yards and six scores in 20 games |

Téma: Jak postupovat / d both subtly and forcefully at times. M TSN.cas NHL Play of the Year showdown continues today with a starter and a finisher. The final match-up of the Round of 32 sees Calgary netminder Reto Berras acrobatics pitted against Hurricanes forward Nathan Gerbe and his breakaway theatrics. Weve already seen some kick saves in the opening round, but Berras easily gets top marks for distance. Jack Johnson has a good look at the net on a Blue Jackets power play, but Berra comes out of nowhere with a denial. Going into a full roll, the Finnish netminder not only gets his pad up to stop it, but connects with a near-bicycle kick to fire the rebound out of the crease in a move thats “more Pele than Brodeur.” Gerbe wins a foot race for a breakaway and then goes into full “skills competition” mode for the finish. Easily beating a pair of Flyers to a loose puck, Gerbe barrels in all alone on Steve Mason. Cutting across the net, Gerbe drops the puck between his legs and reaches back for the flip shot going against the flow. Mason manages to get a piece of it, but by the time the puck is in the net, Gerbe is already halfway back to the bench. He treats the unbelievable move like its just another day at the office. JERSEY CITY, N.J. — John Elway says Peyton Manning cannot stamp himself as the greatest quarterback in NFL history even if he wins the Super Bowl on Sunday. Elway told The Associated Press on Wednesday that hes come to realize the argument over whos the best QB ever is a lot like beauty: Its in the eye of the beholder. “I dont think theres ever going to be a very best. I think theres always going to be a conversation,” said Elway, the Broncos Hall of Fame quarterback-turned-executive vice-president who lured Manning to Denver after his release from Indianapolis two years ago. Manning has the chance to become the first starting quarterback to lead two franchises to Super Bowl titles when the Broncos play the Seahawks at MetLife Stadium. When Manning signed with the Broncos on March 20, 2012, Elway declared, “My goal is to make Peyton Manning the best quarterback thats ever played the game.” But at the team hotel on the Hudson River on Wednesday morning, Elway said he now realizes that question will never truly be answered “even though when he walks away Peyton may well have broken every single record.” “So, youre going to always have your detractors, but he may have a large percentage of whos the best, you know what I mean?” Elway said. “Yeah, all he can do is he can continue to cement his legacy, especially if he continues to keep going like the year he had this year. And Im going to try to make sure he has all the weapons to be able to do that.” Manning has brushed off all questions about his legacy this week. With Manning leading the huddle and Elway the front office, Denver is back in the big game for the first time since the Broncos won back-to-back titles in 1998 and 99, after which Elway tried his hand at running restaurants and car dealerships. Those businesses “dont have scoreboards on Sundays,” so Elway returned to his beloved Broncos in 2011 to rescue the foundering franchise after a slow descent under Mike Shanahan and a nosedive under Josh McDaniels. Tebowmania quickly came and went and with Manning throwing for 99 touchdowns, the Broncos have gone 28-6 the last two years. Elway looked more relaxed in his suit and tie than he ever did during the weeks preceding the five Super Bowls he played in, wins over Green Bay and Atlanta after losses to the Giants, Redskins and 49ers. Thats because Super Bowl week is way more stressfful on a quarterback, he said.dddddddddddd “Well, Im finally at the stage where I worry about what I can and cant control,” Elway said. This is quite the contrast from Jan. 12, when the Broncos fended off a fourth-quarter rally for a 24-17 win over San Diego that avoided a repeat of their crushing loss to Baltimore exactly a year earlier. Elway said he was “absolutely miserable” watching that game and “it took me four hours to get the pit out of my stomach afterward.” “San Diego was different because that was a hump we had to get over because of Baltimore,” Elway said. “So, that was something that we had to put in our rearview mirror because if we hadnt done it, then were going to be talking about it for another full year. Then, were dealing with another year of the same thing.” That 38-35 double-overtime loss to the Ravens, helped along by Rahim Moores infamous gaffe that allowed Jacoby Jones to haul in a 70-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of regulation, haunted the Broncos for 365 days — and might return to burden them anew if they dont beat Seattle on Sunday night. As Terrance Knighton put it, “Our goal wasnt to get here. Our goal was to get out of here — with the Lombardi Trophy.” Thats been Elways message since last January, delivered both subtly and forcefully at times. Manning said Elway created an “uncomfortable atmosphere” at Dove Valley last off-season. Elway used Denvers sloppy 40-10 preseason loss at Seattle in mid-August as an opportunity to send a message about effort and expectations. “John pretty much laid it on us,” Manning recalled Wednesday. “He was not happy with that game. It was a butt-kicking, and whether its preseason or regular season, he was just sharing his thoughts that that wont be accepted.” So unusual was Elways exasperation that Manning took notes, which he said he reviewed this week in preparing for the Seahawks. “He talked about what he thought our potential could be and didnt want to see that wasted,” Manning recounted. “So, I think guys got the message. If I was reading it the right way, he mightve been giving the message to some coaches as well. … I think it was a challenge, too, that he saw some real potential in this team. He thought it had the makings of a special team and just wanted to be sure we were going to max out.” ’ ’ ’ |

After giving up two goals in three minutes in the second half, however, Canada had to settle for a 2-2 draw in their opening match of the Womens Under-17 World Cup. “We had the 2-0 lead and we gave that up, but Germany are the European Champions for a reason,” said head coach Bev Priestman. “I think playing this level of opposition for all three games, I think we really need to stay focused and do the things that we do well and trust our strategy.” Canada frustrated the Germans over the opening 45 minutes and went into the break up 2-0 from goals by Jessie Fleming and Marie Levasseur. Fleming gave Canada the lead three minutes into the contest and Levasseur added another in the 44th. Germany roared to life with goals in the 65th and 68th minutes by Nina Ehegoetz and Kim Fellhauer. Téma: Jak postupovat / only teams to have played their GLENDALE, Ariz. — Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke left his start against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday after throwing just four pitches because of a mild right calf strain. “I think its minor, but well see,” Greinke said. “I dont know exactly what it was, but it felt kind of like a cramp.” Grienke was making his first spring start after saying he had “zero interest” making the trip for the Dodgers two regular-season games in Sydney, Australia, March 22-23 against Arizona. But now Geinke says hed like to start a game Sydney Cricket Ground. “If were going to be there, which obviously we are, then, yes, Id like to pitch over there,” he said. "Im looking forward to flying over there. “No one wants me to say it this way, but in my vote, if we could go over there, my vote was not to,” he said. “But more people wanted to go than not. So, now that we are going, I want to be there. I dont want to not go and have the rest of the team go and have to play and me sit here watching. I also dont want to go over there and watch. I want to go over there and play, since thats what were doing.” His initial comments, he said, were based on concerns that the trip would alter his spring training. “Its just the routine thing,” he said. "I want to pitch good. I want to win games. When youre forced to do something youre not used to doing, its harder to be able to do it at the best of your abilities. Its still possible, but it makes it harder. “Ive never been real big on what peoples perceptions are of me,” Grienke added. “The only goal is to try to win as many games as possible.” Greinke left the mound after throwing two pitches to the Diamondbacks second hitter, Cliff Pennington. He retired Tony Campana on two pitches. Following the second pitch to Pennington, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly and Stan Conte, chief of the clubs medical staff, rushed to the mound. Greinke threw a couple of warmup pitches and then headed for the clubhouse. “I just was walking around the mound a little bit,” Greinke said. “I didnt think I was going to need to come out this time, but after talking to them, thats what they decided. Id like to see how it feels later.” .Y. — The New York Knicks hope to have Amare Stoudemire back before the end of the season after a second doctor said he wont need surgery on the bulging disk in his back. The Canadian duo finished with a four-run time of three minutes 50.Interleague play has been a boon for Major League Baseball. For the Blue Jays, not so much. This weekend, battling to get back over the .500 mark, John Gibbons and company kick off a stretch of seven straight games against the National League. They start with three at Pittsburgh against the struggling Pirates and then follow up that series with two at Philadelphia before returning home the next night to kick off a two-game set at Rogers Centre with the Phillies. After salvaging the final game of their three-game set at Kansas City on Thursday night with a 7-3 victory, the Jays sit at 13-15 but thanks largely to the injuries and flaws of the other teams in the AL East, they are still just two-and-a-half games back of the first place Yankees. Still, if the Blue Jays are going to keep it that close, theyve got to start beating the National League clubs with more regularity. Since interleague play came into being in 1997, the Blue Jays have compiled a record of 143-160. The first 16 years, the games were compressed into a small portion of the schedule when school was out in June and early July for the most part. Last season, with Houston moving to the American League, there were 15 teams in each league so there pretty well had to be at least one interleague game each and every day of the season. Last season, the first year under the new format, the Jays actually had a winning record against the National League clubs at 11-9. But overall, the Jays interleague record pales to those of the Yankees and Red Sox. The Yanks are 179-123 over the 17 years heading into this season. Boston is right behind them at 175-128. It isnt just the big boys who have success in interleague play, though. The Angels, who havent won a World Series since 2002, are 174-130 against the senior circuit over that span. The White Sox are 171-132 and even the Minnesota Twins are 165-137. If you average it out over 17 seasons, the Blue Jays have cost themselves about two games per season versus the Yanks and Red Sox in the East by struggling in interleague play. The American League has dominated this annual showdown between the two leagues, having the better record in 13 of the 17 seasons. Oddly enough, though, in the beginning the National League was up four winning seasons to three over the first seven interleague plays. The American League has dominated ever since. Nine American League teams are above .500 in the crossover play to just five National League clubs. The top National League club in interleague play is Atlanta at 148-131, followed by St. Louis at 135-120. Miami has done surprisingly well at 149-141. Luckily for the Blue Jays, the two teams they are playing against over the next seven days havent traditionally done well against the American League. Pittsburgh is the worst at 106-143 and the Phillies are 127-158. The Pirates have really had their troubles this season. After making the playoffs last season for the first time since 19992, the Bucs are 10-18 this time around.dddddddddddd They lost one of their top pitchers in A.J Burnett in the offseason as a free agent to the Phillies, while lefty Wandy Rodriguez is recouping from a knee injury. But the Pirates real problem has been cashing in runners. They stranded 28 men in dropping a day/night doubleheader to Baltimore Thursday. On top of that, their number one catcher, Russell Martin of Montreal, is on the disabled list. The Pirates are in a virtual tie for last in the NL Central with the Cubs. The Phillies are only marginally better. They are 13-13, tied with Miami for last in the AL East. Yes the Phillies were stung by the retirement of Roy Halladay in the offseason but like the Pirates, their problem is run production. If you can believe it, their outfielders have only 15 extra base hits and the season is a month old. These are teams the Blue Jays must beat. Anything less than five out of seven will be a failure. One thing to remember about the Phillies is that they won a World Series in 2008; just six years ago. Yet this year, they lost 6,000 season ticket holders and their average attendance drop from a year ago, according to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer, is 9,129 per game. This, for a team that has known recent success and has a pretty new and fan-friendly ballpark. The inclement weather of April likely plays a major part in the Phillies drop-off, but it just shows fans wont put up with mediocrity forever. I was more than a bit surprised that the team with the second biggest drop-off is Detroit at 5,493 per game. This, for a Tigers team that seems to win the AL Central nearly every year and has been to the World Series, albeit, hasnt won twice in the last eight seasons. You might have missed it but the Dodgers franchise reached a milestone on Wednesday, winning its 10,000th game. The only others to reach that magic figure are the Giants, the Cubs and the Braves. And of those four, the Cubs are the only teams to have played their entire existence in one city. The Dodgers Zack Greinke is putting up some obscure but impressive stats, nonetheless. Hes off to a 5-0 start this season and has made 18 straight starts where he has pitched five innings or more and given up two or fewer runs. That hasnt happened in 100 years — since 1914. The last time Greinke started a season 6-0, he won the Cy Young Award in 2009 while in the American League. Adam Lind isnt close to returning to the active roster yet. Hes still rehabbing his back. But when he is healthy again, the Blue Jays could face an interesting dilemma if Juan Francisco keeps hitting the way he is. There is no way the Jays can carry Edwin Encarnacion, Lind and Francisco on the same roster. Francisco has one edge over Lind in the versatility department in that he can also play 3rd base in a pinch. Linds not in any kind of jeopardy, but this situation will be interesting to watch. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / Gonzalez-World-Cup A meeting between Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin is usually big enough on its own. The fact that the Pittsburgh Penguins can post the longest home winning streak in franchise history only adds more intrigue to tonights matchup with the Washington Capitals. Catch all the action live on TSN2 at 8pm et/5pm pt. The Penguins return home from a 2-0-1 road trip out west having won 12 straight as the hosting club. That matches the record set between Feb. 22- March 30 of last season. Pittsburgh also comes in well rested, having been off since winning a 2-1 decision in Calgary on Saturday. Marc-Andre Fleury came up with 27 saves and both Chris Kunitz and Matt Niskanen had goals. The Penguins, who are 6-1-1 in their last eight games, had scored 18 non- shootout goals in their previous four games while allowing 15. “It was nice to have a nice, low-scoring game,” said Fleury. “The last few games were a little crazy. We have a lot of guys who can score goals, but if we want to be successful we have to do well defensively.” Pittsburgh will play its next three at home, where it has not lost since Nov. 13 and is 19-3-0 this season. The Pens also get some rest after this contest as their next game isnt until Monday versus Florida. Even with the recent days off, Penguins forward James Neal is day-to-day and questionable for tonight with an upper-body ailment that has held him out of practice the last two days. Neal has 17 goals and 36 points in 27 games this season and notched a goal and an assist in Pittsburghs 4-0 win over hosting Washington on Nov. 20. Fleury recorded an 18-save shutout, improving to 14-7-2 with a 2.49 goals against average in his career versus the Capitals. Pittsburgh bested Washington for the fifth consecutive game and the Capitals have lost three straight in the Steel City following an eight-game series road win streak. Crosby and Paul Martin also had a goal and an assist in the November victory, while Ovechkin was held to just two shots. Crosby leads the NHL with 67 points and is second with 42 assists. He has logged eight goals and 25 points over a 16-game home point streak and has tallied five goals and 22 points in 12 career home meetings with the Capitals. The former Hart Trophy winner has 45 points in 26 career games versus Washington, while Ovechkin has 22 goals and 40 points in 32 career games against the Penguins. Ovechkin notched his league-leading 33rd goal of the season in last nights 2-1 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks. However, Ovechkin, Eric Fehr and Nicklas Backstrom all failed on their attempts in the tiebreaker, while San Joses Patrick Marleau had the lone shootout goal. “It was a good test for us. A good team. Theyve been together for a long time,” said Ovechkin. “I think we had good chances to win the game in (regulation), in the third period, but we got the point.” Rookie Philipp Grubauer made 28 saves as he started for the 12th time in Washingtons past 17 games. He is 6-2-5 with a 2.06 GAA and .936 save percentage in 14 games (12 starts) this season. Though Washington has now followed up two straight wins with back-to-back shootout losses, the point moved the Capitals into a tie with Philadelphia for second place in the Metropolitan Division. Both teams trail Pittsburgh by 16 points for the top spot. Washington will play three straight and eight of its next nine on the road, where it is 8-8-4 on the season. Braden Holtby got the start in Washingtons first meeting with Pittsburgh this season, giving up all four goals on 40 shots faced. Téma: Jak postupovat / eated Andreas Prommeg LIVERPOOL, England — Ki Sung-Yeungs first-half penalty gave last-place Sunderland a surprise 1-0 win at 10-man Everton on Thursday after goalkeeper Tim Howard was sent off for bringing down the South Korea midfielder. Ki, who is on loan from Swansea, darted into the box midway through the first half and was tackled by Howard, who was given a straight red card. The midfielder then converted the 25th-minute spot kick to give Sunderland its first away win of the season and a much-needed boost in its fight to escape the relegation zone. Gus Poyets team remains bottom, three points from safety. Everton brought on Ross Barkley as a substitute and piled on the pressure after the break but could not find an equalizer, with Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone pulling off several impressive saves. Everton is fifth after only its second loss of the season, five points off the league lead. Howard saved a shot by Jack Colback shortly before the incident that led to his sending off. Howard opted for a short goal-kick to Leon Osman, who couldnt control it and Ki stole the ball and tried to go around Howard but was fouled by the goalkeeper. Ki, who also netted the winning goal against Chelsea in the League Cup quarterfinals, then made no mistake in firing the penalty in past substitute goalkeeper Joel Robles. Robles looked shaky as he fumbled Ondrej Celustkas drive in the 36th minute but did well to block the follow-up by Sebastian Larsson and from the resulting corner, Ki miscued wildly when trying to shoot. After the break, Everton began to apply some pressure but Mannone made a decent parry to keep out Phil Jagielkas header and got his hands on Romelu Lukakus attempt at a rebound shot. Lukaku then saw Mannone get down to claim his drilled shot from outside the box, before Barkley – who netted so spectacularly in the previous game against Swansea – sent another ambitious effort too high. The decision came a day after a 1-0 home loss to fellow struggler West Bromwich Albion, which left Norwich in 17th in the Premier League standings, just five points above the relegation zone after losing four out of its last six matches. Four of the teams remaining five games are against Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal — by far the toughest run-in of any of the relegation-threatened teams. Norwich said in a statement it parted ways with Hughton and his staff “to give the club the maximum chance to secure the points required between now and the end of the season to ensure retention of our Barclays Premier League status.” The 48-year-old Adams was promoted from his previous post as under-18 coach. He played 206 matches for Norwich between 1993 and 1999, having won the league with Everton in 1987. “To say that I am delighted to have been offered the opportunity of managing Norwich City Football Club would be a massive understatement,” Adams said. "People know what this club means to me, and so it goes without saying that we will be doing everything possible to ensure that we maintain our top-flight status for next season. “These final five games will be a huge test for us, and everyone must step up to the mark. But with the full backing of these magnificent Norwich supporters we will have every chance of achieving our objective.” Hughton guided the Canaries to 11th place last season, and Norwich said “he has represented the club with dignity throughout his tenure.” “However the recent run of four defeats in our last six Premier League games and six consecutive away league defeats, left the club with no choice but to act, with five games still to play in the current campaign,” the clubs statement said.
