KONIGSSEE, Germany — Canadas Kaillie Humphries edged Elana Meyers of the United States by the slimmest of margins Sunday for the overall womens World Cup bobsled title. The Calgary native finished with 1,629 points, one more than Meyers. If Humphries — the Olympic champion and now a two-time overall World Cup winner — was 0.03 seconds slower Sunday, Meyers would have won the title. Humphries and Heather Moyse of Summerside, P.E.I., finished with three World Cup victories, one silver and one bronze medal. One of the most explosive teams out of the start, the pair set a new womens start record in Konigssee at 5.17 in both runs. “Kaillie crushed everyone in that first run and I thought she was going to cruise to a win today,” said head coach Tom De La Hunty. “But she made a mistake on that second run and when you make a mistake in a snowy race it pays you back double.” Fabienne Meyer and Tanja Mayer of Switzerland won the last race of the season in a two-run time of one minute 44.01 seconds. Meyers and Aja Evans had a stellar second run to climb six spots and finish second, just ahead of Humphries and Moyse. Jennifer Ciochetti of Edmonton, and Chelsea Valois of Zenon Park, Sask., were 12th at 1:45.31. Canada also won bronze in the four-man race. Lyndon Rush of Humboldt, Sask., Lascelles Brown of Calgary and Edmontons David Bissett and Neville Wright finished two runs in 1:38.84. The defending Olympic four-man champion Steven Holcomb and his team won their fourth race of the year in 1:38.54, edging the Swiss sled driven by Beat Hefti by a mere 0.09 seconds. Holcomb medalled five times in eight four-man races this season, finishing second to Germanys Maximilian Arndt for the yearlong points title. Holcomb was the two-man season champion. Feeeding off his first World Cup two-man victory, Justin Kripps and his crew finished 11th in the four-man. Kripps of Summerland, B.C., James McNaughton of Newmarket, Ont., Tim Randall of Burlington, Ont., and Edmontons Bryan Barnett stopped the clock at 1:39.25. Calgarys Chris Spring finished fifth in the overall World Cup four-man standings with a 12th place finish on Sunday. Spring and his crew of Jesse Lumsden of Burlington, Ottawas Cody Sorensen and Saskatoons Ben Coakwell posted a time of 1:39.31. Lowry joined TSN 1050 on Monday to discuss his personal growth, what was going through his mind on his final second drive and whether his future plans include staying in Toronto. “That last play will be my summertime grind,” Lowry said of his final shot which was blocked by Paul Pierce in the lane as time expired. MAKE IT SEVEN Facing elimination, the Montreal Canadiens came out of the gate quickly to take an early lead, got a few bounces and 26 saves from Carey Price on the way to a 4-0 win, tying the series at three games apiece. Montreals big scorers came to play, as LW Max Pacioretty scored once and added an assist. It was Paciorettys second goal of the playoffs, his first of this series. Pacioretty struggled early in the series, but has been better (43 5-on-5 shot attempts for, 41 against) over the past three games. Paciorettys assist game on the first of Thomas Vaneks two goals. A couple of additions to the Habs lineup paid off in limited roles for Game Six. Veteran C Daniel Briere, a healthy scratch in Game Five, was on for nine shot attempts for and four against, anchoring the fourth line with Dale Weise and Brandon Prust. Rookie D Nathan Beaulieu, in for Douglas Murray, chipped in an assist and was one for 58.3% of 5-on-5 shot attempts when he was on the ice. Canadiens D Josh Gorges, charged with protecting the lead, played a game-high 26:19, and was on the ice for 25.0% of 5-on-5 shot attempts. With Gorges off the ice, the Canadiens held 64.3% of the shot attempts at even strength. That the series is going seven games doesnt come as a major surprise — over the past decade, the Canadiens and Bruins have gone seven games in a playoff series in 2011, 2008 and 2004 — but with a couple of missed opportunities earlier in the series (ie. Lost lead in Game Two, OT loss in Game Four), the Canadiens needed a really big performance to take this particular series to Game Seven. The Bruins have been the better team ove the course of this season and carried play more consistently over the course of this series, but that doesnt much matter now. Wednesday night will bring a winner-take-all Game Seven between these arch-rivals, with a trip to the Eastern Conference Final awaiting the winner. DUCKS FLYING HIGH For the first time in the Freeway Series, the home team came out on top, and the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 win in Game Five gave them a 3-2 series lead over the Los Angeles Kings. The Ducks turning to rookie G Joohn Gibson, in their time of need, has altered the series and Gibson turned aside 39 of 42 Kings shots in Game Five to earn the win.dddddddddddd In five regular season and playoff games with the Ducks this season, Gibson has stopped 150 of 157 shots (.955 SV%). This wouldnt be the first time that a rookie goaltender made a name for himself in the NHL playoffs, but Gibsons performance in the last two games has already tipped the series in Anaheims favour. Ducks LW Devante Smith-Pelly is taking a liking to his role on the number one line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. Smith-Pelly scored a pair of goals and led the Ducks with six shot attempts and seven hits. Once the Ducks jumped out to a 4-1 lead, they went into a defensive shell as the Kings mounted a comeback attempt. LW Marian Gaborik scored a pair of goals, giving him a playoff-leading eight goals, and had seven shots on goal. Not surprisingly, the Kings top line of Gaborik, Justin Williams and Anze Kopitar carried play, all three on the ice for better than 70% of 5-on-5 shot attempts. Unheralded Kings C Jarret Stoll has been having a tremendous series. In five games, hes been on the ice for 65.8% (79 for, 41 against) of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. Hes gone without a point in the past eight games, but the puck is spending a lot of time in Anaheims zone when Stoll is on the ice. Also, in Game Five, Kings D Drew Doughty had 13 shot attempts, including a deflection in the final minute that was kicked aside by Gibson. Kings C Mike Richards played 9:50, second-lowest on the team (ahead of only Jordan Nolan) and didnt take a shift in the final 10 minutes. In 250 regular season and playoff games over the past three seasons with Los Angeles, prior to Game Five, Richards had played more than 10 minutes in 249 of those games. The Kings may hold an edge in territorial play in this series, but theyre now facing a deficit and have to win back-to-back games against the Ducks. Finding a way to get Gibson off his game has to be the priority because, right now, the kid is playing well enough to leave Los Angeles royally disappointed. When healthy, San Diego tight end Antonio Gates is a premier performer at the position, recording more than 700 yards and eight touchdowns — thresholds hit by three tight ends, including Gates, in 2010 - in each of the last seven seasons. However, injuries have started to affect his availability. Plantar fasciitis limited Gates to 10 games last season, the first time in his career that the 31-year-old had played fewer than 15 games in a season and it now appears that hes going to remain out of the lineup this week against Miami, hoping that rest will allow his foot to get healthy and allow him to produce at an elite level when he does return. To the credit of quarterback Philip Rivers and the rest of the Chargers offence, they did go 5-1 in the six games that Gates missed last season. With Gates out, Randy McMichael will start at tight end for the Chargers, but the passing game will rely more heavily on Vincent Jackson, Malcom Floyd and Patrick Crayton. Jackson and Floyd have both been slowed in practice by injuries this week, but are expected to be ready for Sunday. When seeking other tight end options, fantasy owners could look to Detroits Brandon Pettigrew, Carolinas Greg Olsen, Clevelands Benjamin Watson or Baltimores Ed Dickson. INJURIES Even when healthy the Steelers offensive line is nothing to write home about, but three offensive linemen - LT Jonathan Scott along with guards Doug Leguarsky and Steve McLendon sat out practice. A porous line affects the entire offence, but particularly RB Rashard Mendenhall, who hasnt rushed for more than 66 yards in a game yet this season. – 49ers RB Frank Gore has been limited in practice by the sprained ankle that caused him to leave Sundays game at Cincinnati. Kendall Hunter, who had 30 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries against the Bengals, could be more prominent in San Franciscos plans against Philadelphia as a result. – Rams RB Steven Jackson has been slowed by a quad injury, which should mean continued action for Cadillac Williams, even if Jackson does suit up against Washington on Sunday. – Saints WR Marques Colston might be ready to go this week after a couple of weeks off with a fractured collar bone. It does seem a quick return, but if hes in the lineup against Jacksonville, Colston figures to be Drew Brees top target. – Falcons WR Roddy White is dealing with a thigh injury. If it keeps him out of this weeks game at Seattle, rookie Julio Jones becomes the primary target for QB Matt Ryan. – Packers RB Ryan Grant, who had his best game of the season last week at Chicago, suffered a bruised kidney and hasnt practiced this week as a result. James Starks would be in line for more touches against Denver this week. – Kerry Collins has been bad enough for the Colts fantasy value, but if hes not able to play because of the concussion he suffered against Pittsburgh on Sunday, then Curtis Painter moves into the starting lineup, hurting value across the board for the Colts offensively against Tampa Bay. MATCHUPS Tough matchup for Broncos RB Willis McGahee, going up against a Green Bay defence that has allowed 55.0 yards per game on the ground. – Detroits running game has been mediocre and Jahvid Best may have a difficult time against a Dallas defence that has surrendered 61.3 rushing yards per game. – Minnesotas run defence has been strong, allowing 67.3 yards per game and 3.1 yards per carry, and the unit should only be better with DT Kevin Williams now in the lineup, potentially providing a tough day for Chiefs runners Dexter McCluster and Thomas Jones. – Oaklands league-worst run defence was better against the Jets last week, yet could still present a good opportunity for the Patriots, though it may be a committee – BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Stevan Ridley and Danny Woodhead - getting the ball for New England. – After facing Dallas strong run defence last week, Washingtons Tim Hightower should find St. Louiss run defence (allowing 5.4 yards per carry) more to his liking. – Houstons passing attack has been prolific, but they are going up against a Steelers team that has allowed an average of 164 yards passing. Granted, the Texans have more talent available than some of the Steelers competition to this point, but it could be a difficult matchup nonetheless. – Cleveland QB Colt McCoy should have his hands full with Tennessees pass defence, allowing 172 yards per game. – New Englands league-worst pass defence could provide a favourable matchup for Raiders QB Jason Campbell along with rookie WR Denarius Moore. – Green Bay has allowed nearly 360 yards passing per game thus far, potentially an opportunity for Denver QB Kyle Orton, WR Brandon Lloyd and WR Eric Decker to put up good numbers, win or lose. Pence and the San Francisco Giants have reached a tentative agreement on a $90 million, five-year contract, pending a physical. “I cant say too much until its official,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “Its good news. I couldnt be happier for Hunter.” Pence, who was scheduled to get his physical before taking the field, politely declined comment. A formal announcement of the deal is expected Sunday. He had been eligible to become a free agent after the World Series. “You cant help but love Hunter Pence and the way he plays the game,” Bochy said. “Its all about making a commitment and getting back on track. You need great players.” Pitchers Matt Cain and Ryan Vogelsong were the first to greet Pence. “Hes a very positive man,” Giants outfielder Angel Pagan said. “The game could be 20-0 with two outs iin the ninth, and he still thinks we can win it.dddddddddddd” Pence is batting .282 with a career-high 26 home runs and 94 RBIs. He received the Willie Mac Award on Friday night, given to the most inspirational member of the Giants. Hes played in every game this season and would become the first Giants player since Alvin Dark started all 154 games in 1954. The last outfielder to play in every Giants game was Bobby Thomson in 1949. The two-time All-Star outfielder was acquired from Philadelphia in July last year and was credited with being instrumental in San Franciscos second World Series title in three years. “Were here not just to play baseball, were here to win,” Pagan said. “This is good news for us. Its good he stays here. We know the type of team weve got.” The right fielder leads the NL with 369 putouts. He has an 88 per cent success rate in stolen bases and is third with 298 total bases. Pence ranks sixth in hits and fourth in doubles. Pence finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting with the Houston Astros in 2007. ’ ’ ’

Franck Ribery set up Thomas Mueller to score the winner from close range in the 75th minute after Hoffenheim had missed a host of chances to clear. Hoffenheim went in front through Niklas Suele in the 34th, only for Bayern to equalize five minutes later when Riberys free-kick was deflected in by Mario Mandzukic. “We drew on all what we could,” Hoffenheim coach Markus Gisdol said. “But in the end we only gained prestige and not a point.” The home side had been threatening to take the lead but ran out of steam after Mueller scored. The Germany forward missed a good chance to score again before Bastian Schweinsteiger squandered another opportunity when he shot straight at Hoffenheim keeper Koen Casteels. “It definitely wasnt our best performance but we won,” Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said. “Im satisfied.” It was Bayerns 36th consecutive game without defeat, matching Hamburger SVs 30-year-old Bundesliga record. Ribery extended his personal record unbeaten run to 40 games. The win keeps Bayern one point ahead of Borussia Dortmund, which provisionally claimed the lead Friday with a 6-1 rout of Stuttgart. “We wanted to stay top of the table. We managed that,” Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. “And we reached a record that was thought to be for eternity. Now well try and build on it next week.” Ten-man Freiburg won 3-0 at Nuremberg for its first victory of the season, while bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig surprised third-placed Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 at home for only its second win. Domi Kumbela was the hero for Braunschweig, scoring from close range in the 81st minute to prompt wild celebrations among the promoted sides fans. “Our fans carried us to this win,” Braunschweig coach Torsten Lieberknecht said. “I shouldnt pick any player out but our goalkeeper kept us in the game today.” Lars Bender was sent off with a second yelloow card in injury time, his first sending off in 116 Bundesliga games and two days after the midfielder extended his Leverkusen contract.dddddddddddd Max Kruse scored twice as Borussia Moenchengladbach beat Hamburg 2-0 away for the sides first two back-to-back wins since February 2012, and Schalke defeated Hertha Berlin 2-0 away. Schalke striker Adam Szalai opened the scoring with a header from a corner in the 26th, and Julian Draxler wrapped up the win in injury time, after Hertha had missed a number of chances to equalize. “The loss feels very bad because we played a very good game over 90 minutes,” Hertha coach Jos Luhukay said. “We had to score after the interval but were missing the necessary luck.” In Hamburg, Kruse capitalized on a short back pass from Lasse Sobiech to round the goalkeeper and score from a difficult angle in the 23rd, and Sobiech was at fault again when Raffael easily dispossessed the defender to set up Kruses second in the 63rd. "The win is more important than my birthday, said Gladbach coach Lucien Favre, who turned 56. Rafael van der Vaart came closest for Hamburg after the break when his free-kick crashed back off the crossbar. “We lost against a good team but in my eyes we played the best game since I started here,” said Hamburg coach Bert van Marwijk after his first defeat in five games. “We deserved at least a point.” Nuremberg created the better chances in the other game but found Freiburg goalkeeper Oliver Baumann in inspired form after a disastrous performance in a 3-0 defeat by Hamburg the week before. “We had Olli Baumann, who was outstanding, and the luck that had been missing up to today,” Freiburg coach Christian Streich said. Felix Klaus put the visitors ahead in the 57th, 12 minutes before Oliver Sorgs sending off for a second yellow card. Vladimir Darida made it 2-0 with a fine strike in the 79th and Admir Mehmedi completed the scoring two minutes from time. Eintracht Frankfurt was to host Wolfsburg for Saturdays late game. ’ ’ ’

SEATTLE — Without wavering, Chris Young will say it each time he is asked: Individual wins are not important to him. Its about the teams success, the veteran right-hander says, going to painstaking lengths to get his point across. Young reached his first double-digit win total in a season since 2006 on Wednesday, but it truly was a team effort this time around as the Seattle Mariners sent the Atlanta Braves to a season-high eighth straight loss with a 7-3 victory. It is the first time since May 2012 that the Braves, who were swept at Dodger Stadium and San Diego before losing two straight at Safeco Field, have lost eight in a row. “You cant get caught up in wins and losses as a starting pitcher. One day the media will stop evaluating us on that,” Young said with a laugh. Young (10-6), who allowed all three runs in the third, was immediately picked up by his teammates, as the Mariners responded with a four-run third. Dustin Ackley led off with a home run and Logan Morrison added a three-run shot off Julio Teheran (10-8) for a 5-3 lead. Teheran was wildly inconsistent in six innings, yielding six runs in three frames, while allowing just one baserunner in the other three innings. Even after allowing Ackleys homer, Teheran appeared to have settled down with two quick outs and a 3-2 advantage. Kyle Seager and Chris Taylor hit back-to-back singles, though, and Morrison deposited a fastball into the right-field seats. After Young protected the 5-3 lead through the fifth, the bullpen took over. After a quick hit, four Seattle relievers combined to throw four innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits. “Its nice to have an eight-man bullpen with so many quality arms down there, so many choices,” Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. Seager drove in Seattles first run with a single in the first, and Taylor and Kendrys Morales later added RBI singles. The Braves scored all three runs in the third, with Freddie Freeman driving in two with a bases-loaded double, but Tommy La Stella was thrown out trying to score from first on the play. “Its just not matching up right now,” Braves outfielder Jason Heyward said. “Its not clicking on all cylinders at the same time for us.” TRAINERS ROOM Braves: SS Andrelton Simmons, who sprained his left ankle during Tuesdays game, was wearing an air cast and using crutches on Wednesday morning. He still hopes to avoid time on the disabled list. Mariners: OF Michael Saunders, on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique, will join Triple-A Tacomaon Thursday to begin a rehab assignment. McClendon said Saunders will DH before moving to the outfield. … INF Willie Bloomquist did not get a positive report after being checked out by a doctor on Wednesday and will get a second opinion on his bruised right knee. UP NEXT Braves: Atlanta returns home to start a 10-game homestand against the Nationals on Friday. Ervin Santana (10-6) lost his only career start against Washington. Mariners: Rookie Roenis Elias (8-9) will make his second career start against the White Sox on Thursday. Elias allowed five runs in five innings in Chicago on July 4. ACK-ATTACK Ackley continues his torrid pace at the plate and is hitting .346 (37-107) since July 1 after collecting two hits, including the home run. HOME VS. AWAY Teheran did nothing to help boost his road stats. The right-hander entered the game 6-6 with a 3.91 ERA away from Turner Field. At home, Teheran is 4-1 with a 1.48 ERA, which is tied for the major league lead in that category. . Dexter Fowler singled with one out in the ninth, Jason Castro drew a walk and Dominguez hit a long fly ball off Nick Martinez (0-1). It took an offensive explosion to end Kamloops eight-game winning streak. Jordan Weal had a hat trick and an assist Sunday as the Regina Pats hammered the Blazers 8-4 in the Western Hockey League. Brandon Davidson chipped in with two goals for Regina (17-14-2), while Colton Jobke had a goal and an assist. Ricard Blidstrand and Dryden Hunt had the other goals for the Pats. Dominik Volek had two assists. Colin Smith had two goals and an assist for Kamloops (22-8-1), while Dylan Willick and Tim Bozon added singles. The Blazers also got two assists each from Brendan Ranford and JC Lipon. Regina goalie Adam Beukeboom made 32 saves to pick up his first WHL win. Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Calgary 4, Brandon 3; Prince Albert 5, Red Deer 0; and Tri-City 3, Portland 0. At Regina, the game was tied 1-1 after the first thanks to a pretty breakaway goal by Weal and wicked wrist shot by Willick. The Pats blew it open in the second with six goals. Weal startted the onslaught with a short-handed effort and ended it with a booming slapshot on the power play.dddddddddddd In between, Reginas Davidson and Kamloops Smith also scored twice, while Jobke and Blidstrand buried their goals. Cam Lanigan took the loss for the Blazers after making just 12 saves on 16 shots. Cole Cheveldave started and allowed three goals on 16 shots before getting pulled. Hitmen 4 Wheat Kings 3 At Calgary, Trevor Cheek scored a pair of goals and Brady Brassart added the winner late in the third as the Hitmen (17-13-2) edged Brandon (19-13-2). -- Raiders 5 Rebels 0 At Red Deer, Alta., Mike Winther and Justin Maylan each scored twice and Cole Holowenko made 39 saves as Prince Albert (10-22-3) shut out the Raiders (14-15-4). - Americans 3 Winterhawks 0 At Kennewick, Wash., Ty Rimmer posted his third shutout of the season and Connor Rankin added a pair of goals to lead Tri-City (25-7-0) past Portland (20-11-3). ’ ’ ’

PITTSBURGH — Less than seven weeks after sustaining a stroke, Kris Letang was cleared to practice with the Pittsburgh Penguins and will join the team for practice Monday. Letang, who has not played since a Jan. 29 stroke and resulting discovery of a small hole in his heart, has been taken off blood thinner medication. The defenceman has missed the past 14 games. “He still has some other things to go through (before returning to game action),” Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said, “but we knew that this was the six-week mark (since the stroke diagnosis) and there was a chance. Hes been working out, hes been skating and doing quite a bit on his own.” A Norris Trophy finalist as the leagues top defenceman last season, Letang signed an eight-year, $58 million contract extension last summer. He has 10 goals and eight assists in 34 games this season. Letang did not skate at all for more than four weeks after the stroke and was not skating vigorously until this past week. SALT LAKE CITY — Derrick Favors is a difference-maker, rusty or not. Favours returned from a hip injury and set the tone early on his way to 20 points to help the Utah Jazz beat the Boston Celtics 110-98 on Monday night. “I felt rusty to tell you the truth but it felt good to be back out there. I made a lot of open shots and I think I did a good job defensively to help my team win,” Favors said. Utah coach Ty Corbin was glad to see Favours back on the court. “He does so many good things for us on the defensive end, it really makes it easy for the other guys,” said Corbin, whose team is 0-9 without his star centre. In the games Favors has missed, its easy to see the Jazz struggle to defend. Even the soft-spoken big man can see the void when hes on the sidelines. “They are a step slow on the defensive end. Usually Im the only guy who helps out when guys make mistakes. Im the guy who bails them out,” Favors said. On the offensive end, Alec Burks is the guy who bails out the Jazz when the play breaks down or the shot clock nears zero. Burks scored 21 points and his instant offence helped keep the Celtics at bay but he knows Utahs limited success this season is keyed by defence. “Having that defensive anchor, that man-child down there helps us a lot,” Burks said. “When we see he is also confident in his shot, it makes the whole team confident.” Marvin Williams added 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting to help the Jazz break a three-game losing streak and end a six-game skid to the Celtics. Favours established himself early with four baskets in the opening quarter and bolstered Utahs leaky defence in the middle. Jeff Green and Kelly Olynyk each had 21 points for Boston, which dropped all four games on its road trip and extended its losing streak to five. The Jazz shot 55 per cent and led by as many 18 points as six players scored in double figures and featured quick ball movement against the weary Celtics. “We couldnt break their rhythm,” Green said. “They kept going to the same thing, making us work. They got good looks and were making shots.” Favours had three blocked shots and Jeremy Evans had a career-high four but the Celtics made 20 of 21 free throws to stay in the game. Despite a strong game from Rajon Rondo, who had 18 points and 10 assists, the Celtics dropped to 4-22 against teams from the Western Conference and 0-13 on the road. Boston has dropped 18 consecutive road games versus Western Conference opponents since a 110-107 overtime win over Utah last Feb. 25. Burks, who is averaging more than 20 points in a reserve role over the last six games, helped the Jazz finally shake the Celtics mastery over Utah. No current member of the Jazz roster was on the team was on the team when Utah last defeated Boston, 110-97 on March 10, 2010. “Were maturing as a team and Im maturing as a player. Im playing my game. I know my role,” Burks said. The Celtics, who shot less than 40 per cent on the road trip, missed regular starters Jared Sullinger and Avery Bradley as the Boston offence broke down early and often. Sullinger is following the leagues protocol after suffering a mild concussion Friday, while Bradley has missed 12 of 15 games with an ankle injury. “Were just trying to keep our heads up, keep working. Were banged up,” Olynyk said. Rondo passed to Kris Humphries for a jumper and then made one of his own to pull the Celtics to 59-50 to begin the second half. But Williams and Richard Jefferson countered with baskets and the Celtics couldnt again trim the lead to single digits until Jerryd Bayless made a layup to make it 103-94 with 3:18 to play. The Jazz clinched the game with a three-point play by Favours and Williams fast-break layup with 1:08 to play. The starting lineup of Richard Jefferson, Williams, Favors, Gordon Hayward (10 assists) and Trey Burke improved to 17-9 on the year. All other lineups are 3-33 for Utah. NOTES: The start of the game was delayed for 10 minutes while crews fixed the remote-controlled camera perched atop one of the shot clocks. … Tennis great John McEnroe sat courtside and hit balls into the crowd during a timeout. … Favours used the ballboys mop to get a ball down that became stuck on the top of the backboard after an errant driving attempt by Bayless. CORVALLIS, Ore. - Nick Johnson scored 25 points and No. 3 Arizona beat Oregon State 74-69 on Wednesday night in a back-and-forth game that wasnt decided until the final minutes. Kaleb Tarczewski added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats (28-2, 15-2 Pac-12), who had already clinched the regular season conference title. The Wildcats have won five straight with their last loss on Feb. 14 at archrival Arizona State. Roberto Nelson scored 25 points and Devon Collier had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Beavers (15-14, 7-10). Arizona built several leads during the game but couldnt pull far away from a feisty Oregon State team. Arizona opened the game on a 7-0 run before Oregon State responded and took a 10-9 lead on a steal and layup by Hallice Cooke at the 14:13 mark. The Wildcats gradually crept away, and an alley-oop pass from T.J. McConnell to Johnson for a dunk that put the Wildcats up 31-22 with 3:53 left in the half, their largest lead of the game. Arizona led 36-33 at halftime. The Beavers went ahead 46-44 after consecutive 3-pointers by Cooke, the latter at the 15:15 mark. Arizona went on a 7-0 run that ended with a jumper by Johnson that made it 58-51 with about 10 minutes left, but Oregon State again responded, tying the game at 58 on a layup by Eric Moreland with 8:13 left. The Wildcats forced turnovers on three straight possessions and took a 69-64 lead with 1:36 left. With 30 seconds left and the score the same, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson blocked a shot by Cooke. Hollis-Jefferson finished with 13 points and six boards. Oregon State outrebounded Arizona 43-34, only the sixth time Arizona has lost the rebounding battle this season. The Wildcats crushed the Beavers on the boards 39-24 in the teams last meeting on Feb. 9, which host Arizona won 76-54. The Wildcats forced 17 turnovers and only committed eight. Arizona won its 108th game in the last four years, the best four-year stretch in school history. Oregon State hasnt beaten a top-5 team since it upset No. 3 Arizona 70-69 in Corvallis in 2000. It hasnt beat a top-25 team in more than three years. Nelson came into the game leading the Beavers with a 20.6-point average. He is on pace to become the first Oregon State player to lead the conference in scoring since Gary Payton in 1990. Cooke, a freshman point guard, who was 7 of 31 from the field in his last four games, finished with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Fourth-seeded Roger Federer ended top-seeded Novak Djokovics chance of defending his Dubai Championships title with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 semifinal win on Friday. Federer will be looking for his sixth Dubai title when he plays third-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in Saturdays final. Berdych reached his second consecutive Dubai Championships final with a tough 7-5, 7-5 semifinal win over seventh-seeded Philiipp Kohlschreiber of Germany. Federer now leads Djokovic 17-15 in their career head-to-head meetings. He also leads Djokovic 13-12 when competing on hard courts. “He deserved to win,” Djokovic said. “He played in the second part of the match better and was more aggressive and played all around the court really well.” Djokovic had won their last three matches and nine of their last 12 matches. Hes twice won three consecutive matches against Federer, but never has won four in a row. “Right now Im just happy that I was able to win the match,” Federer said. "I dont care so much about the head-to-heads. “But its nice to be in the finals here in Dubai again.” For the first set-and-a-half, Djokovic looked as if he would have an easy time reaching the final. Djokovic established an early lead when Federer lost his serve in an error-filled second game of the first set. Serving at 5-3, Djokovic won the first set on his third set point of the game with a clean ace down the middle. Midway through the second set, it seemed as though Federer remembered that his new part-time coach Stefan Edberg, who is not in Dubai, is urging him to play more offensively. From that point on, Federer started to come into the net and volley more often, which was an effective strategy that Djokovic couldnt handle. “I think I was able to play a bit more aggressive as the match went onn,” Federer said.dddddddddddd "For me it was just a matter of playing consistent, but remain aggressive. “Clearly it was close, but I think I got the right balance.” Djokovic doesnt seem to be interested in learning to use the net effectively now that he has Boris Becker, who was a serve and volley type of player, as his new head coach. “Weve been working on certain details in my game, but its nothing significant that Im going to change,” Djokovic said. “Im not going to play serve and volley.” In the second set, Djokovic surrendered his serve in an error-riddled sixth game to put Federer in position to even the score at one set apiece. Federer broke Djokovics serve in the first and fifth games of the third set to set up the win. In the final game, Federer saved two break points when serving for the match in the final game. Berdych enters the final on a 11-match winning streak. He arrived in Dubai having won his first title in over a year at Rotterdam two weeks ago. “I think hes playing very well right now,” Federer said. "This is a big match for him tomorrow (Saturday) as well. “I will try to stop him and play a good match myself.” Berdych now leads Kohlschreiber 8-1 in career matches played. In the first set, Kohlschreiber broke out to a 4-2 lead after Berdych lost his serve in the opening game of the match. From 5-3 for Kohlschreiber, Berdych won the next four games to win the first set, which lasted one hour, 28 minutes. The second set stayed on serve until the very last game, when Kohlschreiber surrendered his serve at 15-40 for Berdych to return to the final. “The second final in a row with so many great players in the draw here is a great result for me,” Berdych said. “Its great to be able to be hitting the ball so nice and clean.” ’ ’ ’

The 2014 FIFA World Cup is nearly behind us, a tournament thats been repeatedly called the best of all time. And Canadians have bought in, consuming the games on radio and television, mounting flags to their cars and following the news from Brazil with great anticipation throughout. Theres only been one thing missing for fans in this country – Canada. No matter how big a soccer fan you are, theres just no doubt the tournament would take on a different kind of appeal if Canada had a stake in the game. The diversity of teams being followed across the country over the past month is a reflection of the mosaic that is Canada, which is fine. But wouldnt it be a heck of a lot more fun if we all had a common rallying point, from one coast to another? Our struggles in mens soccer are well documented, with just one World Cup appearance in 1986, despite the fact that participation levels for soccer players in Canada surpassed hockey during the late stages of the last century. The national mens team is currently tied with Bahrain for 110th in the world. Fortunately, the state of things in the womens game couldnt be more different. Which is why there will be a much different dynamic surrounding the 2015 FIFA Womens World Cup which will take place next summer in Canada. For while this will be a tournament about hosting the world in a global game at venues in Vancouver, Ottawa, Montreal, Moncton, Winnipeg and Edmonton next June and July, it will also be about showcasing and getting behind Canadians in the sport of soccer. Team sports tend to get overshadowed at the Olympics. But there is no doubt the most compelling story of the 2012 Summer Games in London was Canada winning bronze in womens soccer. The Canadian women losing in dramatic — and controversial - fashion against the United States, and subsequently defeating France to win a medal were two of the most memorable international sporting moments in recent Canadian history. Throw in the fact Canada possesses a world-class star player in Christine Sinclair and you have the kind of dynamics behind which an entire country can rally. Canada currently ranks seventh in womens soccer worldwide, ahead of such traditional soccer nations as England, Italy and the Netherlands, countries our men couldnt touch on their best days. So the optimism about what Canada might accomplish is based on more than just the 2012 Olympic result and the fact that the tournament will be played here. At the top of the heap in womens soccer is the United States which, besides being the tournament favourite, also represents Canadas greatest rival. What will it be like when Canada and the U.S. play next summer? What kind of television audience will it draw? Well consider the factors that could make this one of the marquee events on the Canadian sporting calendar next season. First, the proximity of the U.S.to Canada means the U.S. will have a strong contingent of supporters along with them. Then there is the recent history, the bitterness of the Canadians and the raw feelings over the manner in which they were defeated by the U.S in London. Throw in the fact that the Canadian team is comprised almost exclusively of players who got their training in the U.S. and you can understand why the familiarity of this rivalry makes it so intense. But the real payoff to having the Womens World Cup is what it may mean to the sport of womens soccer in Canada in general. Weve seen the effect that the womens national hockey team has had on the growth of the sport among young girls and women. By its very nature, soccer is a more accessible sport than hockey, which means the potential to seed future generations of womens soccer players is immense. Its one thing to present the worlds game to Canadians and tell them to pick a country to get behind. Its something completely different, and far, far more compelling to tell them they can get behind their own. Soccer isnt a new game in Canada, and from widespread participation to the emergence of Major League Soccer in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal to the technology that allows fans to follow it around the globe, its become a significant part of the sporting fabric of Canada. But safe to say we have never experienced the sport like we will next summer. . Michalek scored his second goal of the game and 10th of the season with 23 second left as Ottawa defeated the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Thursday. “We believe theres still lots of goals left in Milan, but its taken a long time to get them out this year,” Senators coach Paul MacLean said. "With his work ethic and his play without the puck and his abilities on the penalty kill, theres never been a question about his contributions to the team. “We knew if he would just stay with it good things would happen for him.” The Sabres had fought back to tie the game with two third-period goals, but Senators captain Jason Spezza found Michalek, who beat Jhonas Enroth over the shoulder for the winner. “Its all about winning and were not doing that right now,” said Sabres defenceman Henrik Tallinder, who said the puck hit the referee and went right to Spezza on the winning goal. “Nothing you can do about it. We didnt go the right way that maybe we should have, but it hit the ref and bounces are going to happen but they just werent in our favour.” Erik Karlsson also scored for the Senators (26-21-11) while Craig Anderson made 30 saves. Tyler Ennis and Drew Stafford scored for the Sabres (15-34-8), who lost for the fourth straight time. Enroth made 33 saves. Following two periods that saw the Senators build a 1-0 lead, things opened up in the third period with four goals off several good scoring opportunities. It started with Michalek doubling the Senators lead to 2-0 just 10 seconds into the period on a perfect pass from Spezza which allowed Michalek to redirect the puck in. The goal was the fastest in team history from the start of a period breaking the old record of 12 seconds set by Spezza back in 2009. “At least Im still involved in (the record) I guess. I would have shot it if I knew that,” Spezza joked after the game, quickly getting serious when the Sabres comeback was brought up. “A two goal lead is a tricky lead. We give up the one goal to make it 2-1 and then really anything can happen with a bounce here or a bounce there. Hopefully we learn from it.” Ottawa got into penalty trouble but was fortunate when Ennis hit the post on one power-play opportunity. The Sabres also had a five-on three advantage for 17 secoonds but were unable to get a shot on goal during that brief stretch.dddddddddddd Ennis broke Andersons shutout bid at 10:25 of the third when the puck came to him in front off a failed wrap-around attempt by Stafford. The puck rolled off Staffords stick right to Ennis who had an empty net to shoot at. Stafford then tied the game at 15:46 when he grabbed a rebound and went around Anderson who was down and out on the play. “There were no excuses not to battle as hard as we could going into that third period and we did a really good job,” Ennis said. “Its super disappointing to lose that one.” Only seven goals, including one in a shootout, have been scored in the previous three matchups between the Sabres and Senators. Karlsson put the Senators on the board first with his shot from along the boards eluded Enroth just 3:12 into the second period. Neither team had many quality scoring chances despite seven power plays between them through the first two periods. But one scoring chance the Sabres did have though came late in the second when Stafford drove the Senators net from just above the goal line but he was unable to tip the puck through Anderson. The Senators stymied the Sabres on all seven of their power-play opportunities. “Weve been winning faceoffs and doing a much better job up the ice and on the initial entry into our zone weve contested it and been hard to play against,” MacLean said. The Senators were 0-3 with the man advantage. NOTES: Forwards Linus Omark and Marcus Foligno along with defenceman Tyler Myers were scratches for the Sabres Thursday. Scratches for the Senators were defencemen Chris Phillips and Joe Corvo plus forward Matt Kassian. … Senators forward Bobby Ryan has gone four consecutive games without a point, his longest such streak this season. … The Senators are 10-0-3 in games this season when captain Jason Spezza has at least two points. … Matt DAgostini played his 300th NHL game Thursday night and his 25th with the Sabres. … While the Senators have a game in Boston Saturday, the game Thursday was the last for the Sabres until after the Olympic break. The team will be off until Feb. 25 except for Ryan Miller (USA), Jonas Enroth (Sweden), Henrik Tallinder (Sweden) and Zemgus Girgensons (Latvia) who will all represent their countries at the Sochi Olympics. … Sabres coach Ted Nolan will also be the head coach of Team Latvia. ’ ’ ’

RALEIGH, N.C. — Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller wasnt sure how his team would respond after Tuesdays game at Buffalo was postponed by a blizzard. With the way Carolina is playing right now, it is going to take more than a change in plans to throw off the Hurricanes rhythm. Jordan Staal had a goal and three assists, and Jeff Skinner extended his offensive surge with a goal and an assist to lead the Hurricanes to a 6-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night. It was Carolinas fifth consecutive win. “That game cancelled in Buffalo gave us an extra day or two of rest,” Muller said. “I think it really helped us. We had fresh legs and everyone contributing.” John-Michael Liles, Patrick Dwyer, Zach Boychuk and Elias Lindholm also scored for the Hurricanes. Liles was playing against his former team for the first time — Carolina sent defenceman Tim Gleason to Toronto for Liles on Jan. 1. “Its just nice to be wanted and to feel like I have a place,” Liles said. “It allows me to be confident and play my game. I think we have a great group of guys on the team — theyve welcomed me, and its been a nice fit so far.” Skinners goal was his 17th in his last 17 games, and he improved his point streak to a career-high six games, with seven goals and five assists in that stretch. Lindholm had three points in his first game back with Carolina after playing for Sweden in the World Junior Championship. Anton Khudobin made 25 saves for the Hurricanes to improve his record to 6-0-0. Khudobin missed more than two months earlier this season with an ankle injury. “This game was, by far, the easiest game,” Khudobin said. Joffrey Lupul scored for the Maple Leafs. James Reimer made 30 saves. Toronto has lost three in a row by a combined score of 18-5 after defeating Detroit in the Winter Classic on New Years Day. “We are standing still,” Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said. “We are watching teams skate. We are not engaged in the hockey game at the level that is required to give ourselves a chance at success.” The Hurricanes took immediate control of the game. Boychuk opened the scoring 2:33 in, when his backhand shot deflected off the stick of Gleason and beat Reimer. It was Boychuks first goal of the year. The Hurricanes made it 2-0 exactly 6 minutes later following a long stretch of sustained pressure on the power play. The puck eventually got to Lindholm, who set up Staal for a one-timer in the slot. Reimer stopped that shot, but Skinner cleaned up the rebound. Following lopsided losses to the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders in its previous two games, Toronto appeared lethargic for much of the night, but the Maple Leafs did manage to close the deficit to 2-1 a little less than 6 minutes after Skinners goal. Mason Raymond won the puck on the forecheck behind the Hurricanes net and centred to Lupul, who scored from the top of the crease. Carolina reclaimed its two-goal lead with 2:27 left in the first period on Dwyers goal. After another long stretch of offensive zone pressure, Dwyer scored when his wrist shot through traffic went through Reimers legs. “Youve just got to find a way to make a save there to keep your team in it,” Reimer said. The Hurricanes then made the score 4-1 early in the second when Liles scored on a snap shot on a 3-on-1 break. It was the first goal for the defenceman since he was traded to Carolina. Staal added a short-handed goal 25 seconds into the third period, and Lindholm finished the scoring with a 5-on-3 goal in the final 70 seconds. It vanished with a flick of Pavel Datsyuks wrist. Just like that, on Datsyuks goal with 3:01 left, the Detroit Red Wings got the upper hand with a 1-0 win in the opener of the best-of-seven playoff series Friday night. “We know were good enough,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said, “but its one thing to know youre good enough and another thing to show it.” The Bruins won the Presidents Trophy for the best record in the regular season — although they were 1-3 against the Red Wings — but were locked in a tight game in which neither team had many solid scoring opportunities. The eighth-seeded Red Wings made their last one count. “Its a good start,” Datsyuk said, “but we know there are many tough games (ahead).” Game 2 of the first playoff matchup between the Original Six teams in 57 years is set for Sunday in Boston. And Detroit doesnt have to win there again to advance. “Ill take home-ice advantage any time,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said, “but that doesnt mean you cant win on the road … which is what we have to do in this series if we plan on winning this.” Datsyuk, still not fully recovered from a knee injury, wasnt Detroits only late-game star. His goal came moments after a brilliant glove save by Jimmy Howard on Milan Lucics deflection in front of the net. “It was pretty lucky,” said Howard, who had 25 saves in his third career playoff shutout. Lucic “stuck his stick out and got a lot on it and it just sort of spun (off) my glove and I was just able to get enough of it.” The goal came when Datsyuk carried the puck from the right side to the left in Bostons zone while teammate Justin Abdelkader skated up the slot between Zdeno Chara and Dougie Hamilton. Both defencemen fell as Datsyuk put a 30-footer past goalie Tuukka Rasks left glove. “Abby did a great job, drove the middle, created space for him,” Babcock said. That may have distracted Rask. “You just try to get the puck in your eyes and I couldnt,” Rask said. “Usually, he tries to make a pass.” Puckk handlers had very little space throughout the game.dddddddddddd “Were going to have to expect that for the rest of the series and find ways to create some offence,” Bostons Patrice Bergeron said. The Bruins scored the third-most goals during the regular season and had just two regulation losses in their last 23 games. Fridays loss was their first playoff game since they dropped the deciding Game 6 of last seasons Stanley Cup final in Boston. They lost 3-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks after allowing the tying and winning goals in the last 76 seconds. Datsyuk, who missed 16 games with a knee injury before returning April 4, got his first playoff goal since Game 3 of Detroits second-round playoff series against Chicago last year. The Red Wings had a 3-1 lead in that series against the Blackhawks, and then lost three in a row. Boston had a decent scoring opportunity in the first minute of the third period when Brad Marchand stole the puck in the Detroit zone and fired a 20-footer from Howards right. But the goalie stopped the shot with his pad. The Red Wings had a better chance two minutes later when Rask made a save, and then stuck his right pad out to kick aside Darren Helms shot on the rebound. Boston played without four regulars, including defencemen Matt Bartkowski and Kevan Miller, both sidelined with the flu. Center Chris Kelly sat out with a back injury and left wing Daniel Paille had a head injury suffered in a collision in the next-to-last game of the regular season. For Detroit, centre Henrik Zetterberg has been out since Feb. 8 with a back condition that required surgery and defenceman Jonathan Ericsson hasnt played since March 14 because of a broken finger. NOTES: Seven players saw their first playoff action, Detroits Luke Glendening, Tomas Jurco, Riley Sheahan and Tomas Tatar, and Bostons Justin Florek, Corey Potter and Reilly Smith. … Smith became the first Bruin to face his brother in a playoff games since Phil Esposito played against Chicago goalie Tony Esposito in 1975. Brendan Smith plays defence for Detroit. … The Red Wings are in the playoffs for the 23rd straight time. ’ ’ ’

LONDON — Andy Murray will lead Britains team in the Davis Cup quarterfinals against Italy next month. The Wimbledon champion heads the four-man lineup announced Tuesday for the April 4-6 matches on clay in Naples. Dan Evans, Colin Fleming and James Ward round out the British team. Ross Hutchins, who returned to action in January after recovering from Hodgkins lymphoma, is a reserve. Murray, Ward and Fleming were part of the team that beat the United States 3-1 in February. Evans played last year in the win over Croatia that put Britain into the elite World Group. This will be Britains first Davis Cup quarterfinal since 1986. The sixth-ranked Murray says Italy has “some very good clay court players with a passionate crowd behind them.” The winner will play either Kazakhstan or Switzerland in Septembers semifinals. Wins like Friday night will help erase those questions. Casey McGehee singled home the winning run with one out in the ninth inning to atone for a costly error and help the Marlins earn a rare road win, 7-5 over the San Francisco Giants. “I think were still trying to figure it out,” Redmond said. “If I had an answer to why were so much better at home to on the road, wed fix it, right? But these guys keep battling. They keep fighting. You saw that tonight. We dont quit. We keep grinding. We might make a few mistakes, but we keep going.” The Marlins made plenty of mistakes. They also made some big plays, too. Derek Dietrich and Christian Yelich homered, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia snapped an 0-for-26 skid by tying his career high with four singles to stop Miamis slide. The Marlins entered the game losers of six of their past seven games and a majors-worst 4-16 record away from home. They also are a league-best 17-5 at home. “Weve seen those games go the other way sometimes, especially on the road right now. It was huge for us to be able to stick in there and get that one,” McGehee said. Santiago Casilla (1-1) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, but couldnt escape trouble in the ninth. The right-hander allowed two baserunners before McGehees tiebreaking grounder to right field. “It just had eyes and got through the infield,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “Thats the way the game goes.” Garrett Jones added an RBI single off lefty Javier Lopez and made a leaping catch in the netting of the photographers pit in foul territory in the bottom of the ninth. Mike Dunn (4-3) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Steve Cishek converted his eighth save for Miami. Neither starter pitched well but did just enough to give his team a chance in the final innings. Henderson Alvarez allowed five runs — four earned — and 10 hits in six innings for the Marlins. He struck out four and walked none. Giantts right-hander Yusmeiro Petit, filling in while Tim Hudson rested his nagging hip, gave up five runs — four earned — on seven hits in five innings.dddddddddddd He struck out five and walked none. “I lost a little bit of my command in the first inning. I tried to stay close in the game,” Petit said. After wasting a 4-1 lead in a loss Thursday night to San Francisco, Miami moved ahead 4-1 again but rallied back late this time. The Giants had three RBI hits with two outs, including pinch-hitter Gregor Blancos bloop single in the sixth that tied it at 5-all. Blancos hit came after McGehee couldnt corral a grounder at third. “I still feel terrible. Alvarez battled through and it wouldve been nice to get him the win,” McGehee said. Defence — or a lack thereof — proved pivotal in the late innings. Redmond successfully challenged a transfer rule call in the fifth. After a replay review, umpires ruled Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton caught Hunter Pences fly in the web of his glove and dropped the ball trying to transfer it to his hand for a throw. Buster Poseys flyout to right later scored Angel Pagan, who had advanced to third on Stantons botched transfer. Stanton made up for the play with an outstretched catch of Michael Morses fly near the wall in the eighth. Pagan also made a spectacular over-the-head catch on Dietrichs deep fly for the first out of the seventh and held on after running into the padded wall in left-centre. And Casilla got pinch-hitter Ed Lucas to ground into a double play with the bases loaded to end the eighth. NOTES: It was the fifth time Saltalamacchia had four hits in a game. … Stantons career-high 17-game hitting streak ended after going 0 for 5. … San Francisco hosted “Metallica Night,” which included members of the heavy metal band playing the national anthem, drummer Lars Ulrich throwing out the ceremonial first pitch and singer James Hetfield announcing San Franciscos starting lineup. … RHP Tim Lincecum (3-2 4.78 ERA) starts for the Giants opposite Miamis RHP Tom Koehler (3-3, 2.57) on Saturday. ’ ’ ’

MONTREAL - FC Edmonton had its first Amway Canadian Championship final within its grasp. But then it all slipped away. Edmonton was winning on aggregate after 90 minutes of play on Wednesday, even though the Montreal Impact were winning the match 3-2. But Patrice Bernier scored late in stoppage time on a penalty kick to give Montreal its second consecutive Amway Canadian Championship final berth. “Its sickening,” said Frank Jonke, who scored the games two goals for Edmonton three minutes apart in the second half. “It leaves a sick feeling in everybodys stomach on our team. To lose, to not go through on that, is very sickening for us.” Having lost the first leg of the home-and-home series 2-1 in Edmonton last week, the Impact needed a two-goal victory for a spot in the next round. Berniers goal five minutes into stoppage time, effectively the last kick of the game, gave Montreal the 5-4 victory on aggregate over the Eddies. In the dying minutes of added time, Montreals Heath Pearce fired a shot into a crowd of Edmonton defenders in the box. Referee Drew Fischer blew his whistle for handball, ran over to Edmontons Kareem Moses, and then pointed to the penalty spot. “I dont think it was a handball,” said Jonke. “I dont think it was a penalty, and I think we should be going through.” Edmonton coach Colin Miller also thought his team was robbed. “(Two Edmonton players) saw one of our players with his hands behind his back. And the ball hit him here,” said Miller, pointing to his shoulder. “The referee then went to the wrong player to tell him it hit him.” Miller was livid with Fischer after the game, and confronted the official as he was leaving the pitch. “Our players in the second half didnt deserve to get beaten in the manner that they did,” said Miller. “I had a go at the referee after the game, and rightly so. The job that we do as coaches is hard enough without that decision being made.” Impact president Joey Saputo then jumped onto the field and got into a screaming match with Miller. “I wished him a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!” quipped the Edmonton coach. “Im sure Mr. Saputo will buy me a Guinness afterwards.” With the win, Montreal (1-0-1) will play either Toronto FC or the Vancouver Whitecaps in the two-leg final on May 28 and June 4. The winner will advance to the CONCACAF Champions League. The Impact went up 3-0 on Wednesday on two first-half goals by Jack McInerney and a 47th minute strike by Jeb Brovsky. Montreal was all but assured victory before Edmonton clawed back in the second half. Jonke scored his first goal in the 67th minute when his shot from just outside the six-yard box deflected off an Impact defender and beat goalie Evan Bush. The Edmonton striker added what would have been the series-clincher three minutes later from the penalty spot, firing right down the middle for his second of the game. The Eddies were awarded a penalty after Impact defender Karl Ouimette took down Neil Hlavaty in the box. Jonkes goals were the first conceded by the Impact at Saputo Stadium in four Canadian Championship matches dating back to 2012 when the team joined MLS. “The game should have been 5-0,” said Impact coach Frank Klopas. “It should have been over. It was a lack of concentration. In five minutes, the game changed. We should have never been in this situation. We crumbled. Our mentality has to be stronger.” If not for Berniers stoppage-time goal from the spot, the Eddies would have progressed to the next round. “Some guys took their foot off the gas pedal, and we let them right back into it,” said McInerney. “We were fortunate to get a goal at the end. Its about time something goes our way this season.” Last week in Edmonton, the Eddies scored a stoppage-time goal for the 2-1 victory. McInerney was the lone goal scorer for Montreal in that game, beating goalkeeper John Smits in the 56th minute. It only took 10 minutes for McInerney to score on the return leg at Saputo Stadium, firing home after a Justin Mapp cross missed Felipe in the box but fell right to the 21-year-old instead. “No disrespect to Edmonton, but theyre a lower-level team,” said McInerney. “I would expect from myself to go out there and score every game against them.” Mapp fed McInerney again seven minutes later, flicking the ball to the on-rushing striker with his heel at the edge of the 18-yard box. McInerney gave no chance to Smits, beating the Eddies keeper with a quick strike. As winners of last years Canadian Championship, the Impact made it to the CONCACAF Champions League for the second time in the continental tournaments six-year history, where they were eliminated in the group stage. Except that shes playing the biggest event in womens golf. Li, a sixth-grader from the Bay Area who doesnt appear to be the least bit overwhelmed by the attention around her, became the youngest qualifier in U.S. Womens Open history when she shot 68 at Half Moon Bay last month to win her sectional by seven shots. She celebrated by having dinner at her favourite restaurant and watching “The Amazing Spiderman 2.” Now its time for the amazing Lucy Li show. “She looks so darn cute,” said Michelle Wie, who didnt make it to her first Womens Open until she was 13. “I was like, I dont think I looked that cute when I was 11. But she just looks so excited, so wide-eyed. … And Im just really so excited for her to be out. Its a memory that will last her a lifetime. What other 11-year-old can say that they played in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst? And she got to see the men play, too.” Life is moving at warp speed for little Lucy Li. She only became serious about golf four years ago when she set up shop in Miami to work with Jim McLean. Just two months ago, the precocious 11-year-old with a mouth full of braces won her age division in the inaugural Drive, Chip and Putt Championship at Augusta National. And now shes at Pinehurst No. 2, ready to take on the course where Martin Kaymer won the U.S. Open on Sunday. “Its awesome, right?” she said. “I mean, Pinehurst and Augusta National in like two months. I mean, thats just amazing. Its mind-blowing for me. Its been awesome, because its been … I mean, the food is great and its been a lot of fun. Ive made a lot of friends.” Theres something about U.S. Womens Open in the North Carolina sandhills that attracts all the kids. Morgan Pressel qualified when she was 12 and had just turned 13 when the Womens Open was down the street at Pine Needles in 2001 (Li wasnt even born then). Lexi Thompson qualified and played at 12 when it returned to Pine Needles in 2007. Too young? Both went on to win major championships. “Look, if youre good enough, youre old enough — or young enough, whichever way you look at it,” Laura Davies said. "If you can play the golf and you can qualify, then have a go. Whats the worst that can happen? She shoots a million this week and everyone says, Wasnt it great she was here? So I dont think anything bad can come out of it because shes too yooung to worry about the pressure.dddddddddddd “Shes just having fun. Shes got a week off school. Its perfect.” Li looked as if she was having a blast on a broiling day of practice Tuesday. She went nine holes with a local caddie. Then, it was time for a press conference, which drew the largest crowd of the day. Her pigtails in braids, held by clips the shape of hearts, she twirled in her chair waiting for it to start. She giggled before just about every answer, including one about whether her father could beat her. She laughed. She laughed again. And then she moved closer to the microphone and said, “No.” But the kid made one thing clear. Shes not out to prove anything. She not out to make history. “The perfect week? I just want to go out there and have fun and play the best I can, and I really dont care about the outcome,” Li said. “I want to have fun and learn. I want to learn a lot from these great players.” She is not the youngest player in Womens Open history. Beverly Klass was 10 when she played in 1967, before there was qualifying. The youngest player to make the cut was Marlene Hagge, who was 13 in the 1947 Open at Starmount Forest in North Carolina. Among the favourites this week is Lydia Ko, the youngest LPGA Tour winner in history at 15 in the Canadian Womens Open two years ago. Age is becoming irrelevant, though something about the number “11” grabs the attention. “I saw her on the range this morning for the first time and didnt really watch her hit any balls — just how little she was, and the pigtails kind of caught me off guard,” Stacy Lewis said. "But Im not a big fan of it. She qualified, so we cant say anything about that. You qualify for an Open, its a great thing. I just like to see kids be successful at every level before they come out here. “When I found out she qualified, I said, Well, where does she go from here? What do you next? I dont know. If it was my kid, I wouldnt let her play in the U.S. Open qualifier at 11. But thats just me.” Li played in the U.S. Womens Amateur last year at 10. She was the youngest to qualify for match play at the U.S. Womens Amateur Public Links. The idea to try to qualify for the Womens Open was “mine.” “Because I wanted to go out there and get the experience,” she said. “Because its 36 holes and I didnt care if I qualified or not. I didnt think about it. I just wanted to go for the experience.” ’ ’ ’

The legend of Jose Abreu continues to grow, but the enormous early achievements for the rookie have yet to translate into an overall level of success for his Chicago White Sox. Abreu his and teammates shoot for back-to-back wins for just the second time since June 11 on Saturday as they battle the Toronto Blue Jays in the third of a four-game set. Trying to slow down Abreu for the Jays is rookie hurler Marcus Stroman, a product of Duke. The right-hander, making his first-ever appearance against Chicago, managed to break a minor two-game slide on Monday as he allowed just a single run on three hits, striking out seven, over eight innings against the New York Yankees at home. Stroman has appeared in four day games this season already, but the results have been somewhat hard to swallow, even though he has a record of 1-1 in such games. He is also carrying a lofty 5.65 ERA in those 14 1/3 innings. Chicago, which is alone in last place in the AL Central, has the second- highest team ERA in the league at 4.40 and is the only club yet to register a shutout on the campaign. Conversely, Toronto is second in the AL with 10 shutouts, although the Jays are 11th in overall ERA with a 4.09 mark. Chicagos first baseman posted two more home runs on Friday as the Sox slipped by Toronto in a 5-4 decision. The victory snapped a brief two-game slide for a Chicago club that is 10 games below .500 (16-26) on the road. Abreu, though, now has four multi-homer games through his first 67 contests, becoming the first player since Atlantas Bob Horner in 1978 to achieve such a feat. Abreu is also tied with Torontos Edwin Encarnacion and Nelson Cruz of Baltimore for the Major League lead in home runs with 25. “Im glad hes on my team,” said White Sox starter John Danks, who picked up his seventh win of the campaign. “Im glad I dont have to face him.” Danks made it through six innings, allowing two runs on five hits, two of those being home runs. A host of relievers handed the game to Jake Petricka who picked up his second save of the season by recording just a pair of outs in the ninth. Former Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey was saddled with the loss as he was hammered for four home runs, five runs overall on just five hits. The knuckleballer did strike out nine and walk only one through six innings, but it just wasnt enough. “I felt very good with it, tonight was a very bizarre outing,” Dickey said. “I dont know how else to explain it, to give up five hits and four of them being home runs. To walk one guy and strikeout nine and leave the game after six innings giving up five runs, thats a bizarre outing.” Encarnacion, who is second in the league in RBI with 65, delivered on his 25th home run, a solo effort, while Colby Rasmus and Dioner Navarro also went deep for a Toronto team which is still holding down first place in the AL East, 1 1/2 games ahead of Baltimore entering play today. After missing almost the entire month of March, Chris Sale is now aiming to come up with his seventh win in eight decisions as he heads to the mound for the White Sox this afternoon. The left-hander pitched on Monday against Baltimore on the road but failed to earn a decision as Chicago was handed a 6-4 loss. Sale made it through just six innings for the second game in a row, permitting a mere two runs as he scattered a season-high 11 hits and struck out three. Now in his fifth season in the majors, Sale has pitched against Toronto four times previously but is still awaiting his first favorable outcome (0-2), although he has been credited with a save in one of those contests. Eugenie Bouchards days of playing lower-tier events and working through qualifying draws appear to be over. The Canadian tennis players first full season on the WTA Tour was a strong one. She has risen to No. 32 in the world rankings and will likely be seeded at the first Grand Slam event of the 2014 season. Bouchard scored some big victories this year and proved she can hang on court with the sports elite. Her next mission is to build on that momentum as she looks ahead to next year. “Ive always believed in my skill,” Bouchard said Friday on a conference call. "I think it was just a matter of time for me to get to this level. But then again, I dont want to stay here. “I want to work hard in the off-season and get ready for 2014 and try to improve as fast as I can and even more for next year.” At just 19 years of age, Bouchard posted impressive victories this past season over big names like Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic and Sloane Stephens. The young Canadian pushed Venus Williams to three sets last month in Tokyo and reached her first Tour final this month at the Japan Open. Not bad for a player who was ranked No. 144 in the world at the end of the 2012 season. Bouchard was also given heavy promotional treatment at last summers Rogers Cup in Toronto. Her matches were given showcourt attention and she performed admirably in the brighter spotlight. “I do like it, its part of the job,” she said. “I think the harder I work and the better I do, that will happen more often.” Bouchard doesnt have a specific ranking goal for next season. She simply wants to improve all facets of her game and get stronger by continuing to play the top players on tour. One area where she noticed an improvement of late was her on-court transition from defence to offence. She also feels her mental game is better. “Ive played big matches and gained so much experience,” she said. “Ive played on centre court at the French Open, centre court at Wimbledon and at Louis Armstrong (stadium court) at the U.S. Open. Those are big matches and big moments that really have given me a lot of confidence and strength and experience.” Bouchard, who is from Westmount, Que., but trains primarily with coach Nick Saviano in Florida, has a 39-24 record this year and earned over US$415,000 in prize money. Her top highlight was beating Ivanovic on Centre Court at the All-England Club, the same venue where Bouchard won the Wimbledon junior title a year earlier. “It was an amazing feeling,” she said. “In tennis you cant get a bigger stage than that.” Bouchards 2014 campaign will kick off during the holiday season at the Hopman Cup mixed tennis team tournament in Perth, Australia. She will team up with Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., for the Dec. 28-Jan. 4 event before continuing preparations for the Australian Open. The 35-year-old from West Vancouver, B.C., broke her wrist in training Jan. 28 and required surgery to repair the compound fracture. “Ive been training everyday, Ive been doing physio everyday. My arm is getting better and better, its getting more range and getting the swelling out,” Ricker said during a conference call Wednesday. “Everybodys done such an amazing job just as a team, as a whole support network to get me out the door and get me on the plane Saturday to get me over to Russia.” Snowboard cross involves four athletes racing down a course at the same time, often jockeying for position. Rickers accident happened when she lost her balance during a training run on the X Games course in Vail, Colo. “It was in a section that Ive ridden dozens of times previous to that run. It was nothing new or surprising. I didnt control my speed as I should have,” said Ricker, who won gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. “I did the exact opposite of what youre supposed to do — I put my arm out to break the fall and unfortunately it broke me.” Despite having a bone sticking of the side of her arm that “was crazy looking” less than three weeks before she was scheduled to compete in Sochi, Ricker said she was never concerned about her ability to participate. “I wasnt worried about that because I had so much support and reassurance right away that I was getting the absolute best medical care on the planet,” she said. “I definitely felt that support and reassurance right away.” Ricker said she wont get back on her snowboard until she reaches Sochi. She expects there to be some pain when she competes, mainly at the top of the course when she pulls herself out of the start gate. She said some of the exercises shes been doing since the injuury involve simulating a snowboard cross start using bungee cords and pulleys.dddddddddddd “I think its going to be better than maybe what I think, based just on my progress the last few days,” said Ricker. "Everything is moving so much better than what I would ever imagine a week (post-operation) from breaking an arm. “I think its going to go quite well. Im really positive about this.” Ricker and her fellow womens snowboard cross competitors will get their first look at the Sochi course Feb. 12, with the initial training session scheduled for two days later. The race is scheduled to go Feb. 16. Ricker has fought through injuries before — including a crash right before the Vancouver Games as well as a concussion this past December — and expects to be able to do the same in Sochi. “Id be lying if I said it wouldnt be in the back of my mind,” she said. “Im hoping everything will go as a usual competition and thats where I spend a lot of time visualizing and thinking about the race and technically what Im doing on the board. Usually that overpowers any pain or anything else thats going on.” Ricker made her Olympic debut in 1998 on Canadas halfpipe team at Nagano, Japan. She returned to the Games in 2006 at Turin, Italy, with the snowboard cross team but crashed and had to be airlifted to hospital. She returned in 2010 to win gold and it sounds like shes equally motivated this time around. “It sounds crazy, but its helped me,” said Ricker of the injury. "This is almost like there was this burning fire, desire. Its almost like somebody doused a bunch of gasoline on the fire so Im pretty ready to go. I can feel the adrenaline and I can feel the excitement of going over to Russia. “Im actually just going to use that as a positive and use that for motivation to just get me through these couple of weeks and hopefully have the race of my life.” ’ ’ ’

The Ottawa Redblacks historic home debut in the CFL will be played in Saskatchewan. At least for the preseason. The Roughriders announced on Monday says the Grey Cup champions will host — as the visitors — the expansion club in a preseason contest on June 14. “Were going to have a lot of fun with this game,” Roughriders president and CEO Jim Hopson said in a statement. “The Redblacks will be on the home side of the field, introduced from their own inflatable helmet and were working on a whole series of fan entertainment features to make it really seem like their home game.” The game is the Redblacks home portion of the preseason, which the Roughriders will host while Ottawas TD Place Stadium undergoes its final tune-ups in preparation for the regular-season home opener in July. “What better place to open a new CFL era than in the city with the most vibrant fans in the CFL,” said Jeff Hunt, President of OSEG Sports. “It will be an incredible experience for fans at the game in Saskatchewan and a taste of things to come for our own incredible fan-base in Ottawa.” . The Browns have relaxed their media limitations to see rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel practice. Two and a half weeks removed from one of the greatest fights in MMA history, the Ultimate Fighting Championship heads to Barueri, Brazil for UFC Fight Night 29. While no hardware is one the line for this event, there are a number of pivotal matchups in both the welterweight and flyweight divisions. Jordan Cieciwa is off this week for this article (probably still upset over fellow Winnipeg native Louis Fisette being ousted from the Ultimate Fighter last week) so Im riding solo. As always you shoot me a tweet on Twitter @LynchOnSports if you agree or disagree. As well feel free as well to leave your opinions in the comment section below. Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields Lynch A pair of ground specialists clash in the main event, as the Brazilian Maia battles Cesar Gracie student Shields. This match is intriguing because both fighters have been headed in opposite directions as of late. Back in 2010, Shields was considered a prized acquisition from the now defunct Strikeforce organization and after just one fight in the UFC (albeit a controversial decision win over Martin Kampmann at UFC 121), fought for the welterweight title against Georges St Pierre at UFC 129. Fast forward to today, the 34-year old has racked up a 2-2-1 record since his UFC debut, which included a first round knockout loss to Jake Ellenberger and a failed drug test against Ed Herman (Which caused that bout to be overturned). Even in his last victory over Tyron Woodley, UFC President Dana White was not impressed, going on his Twitter post-fight and writing “Woodley GOT Robbed!!!” The 35-year old Maia meanwhile has looked very impressive since his drop to welterweight, going a perfect 3-0 and dispatching the likes of Dong-Hyun Kim, Rick Story and Jon Fitch. The question is how will this fight play out? Both are well versed on the mat, with the edge going to Maia being a fourth degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. Shields arguably has better standup and may want to keep the fight on the feet if hes worried about the Maias submission game. While many pundits are claiming this is 35-year-olds fight to lose, I think well see very hungry and desperate Shields, as he potentially faces unemployment. The former Strikeforce Middleweight champion should use his underrated wrestling to control the fight and dictate the pace, something that Maia hasnt been accustom to in his last three fights. Expect Shields to pull off the upset and prove critics wrong yet again. Shields via unanimous decision Erick Silva vs. Dong Hyun Kim Lynch Another intriguing welterweight matchup serves as the nights co-feature as Team Nogueira fighter Silva battles Korean standout Kim. After a string of first round finishes starting off his UFC career, the hype train came to a halt for the 29-year old Silva when he lost to Jon Fitch back at UFC 153. A lack of conditioning and wrestling in that unanimous decision loss proved to be the biggest detriments to “Jungle Boy” losing that fight. He bounced back in his last contest dispatching Jason High back in June with a first round submission at UFC on FUEL 10. Kim meanwhile is on a two-fight winning streak, successfully using his clinch game to control his opponents in both those unanimous decision victories. Whats interesting is Kim has never tapped out during his 21-fight career, while Silva boasts nine submission victories on his resume. Could we see a first for the Busan Team M.A.D member Kim? Its unlikely for a number of reasons. For starters the 31-year old Kim is one of the biggest fighters in the welterweight division and holds a three inch height and reach advantage over the Brazilian. He also possesses exceptional judo, being a fourth degree black belt. Much like thee main event, we should see another upset and a fight playing out similarly to what Fitch imposed in his victory over Silva, controlling the Brazilian over three rounds for the decision win.dddddddddddd Kim via unanimous decision Thiago Silva vs. Matt Hamill Lynch Two 205lb fighters go to war in a wide open Light Heavyweight division, as the Brazilian Silva takes on Ultimate Fighter 3 contestant Hamill. After a string of failed drug tests, the Blackzillians member Silva finally got back on the winning track at UFC on FUEL 10, knocking out former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight champion Rafael Cavalcante. Hamill meanwhile came out his 2011 retirement (after losing to Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 133) to defeat Canadian Roger Hollett at UFC 152. While the 36-year old Hamill does have the superior wrestling which could threaten Brazilian, Silva is just too good in all other areas. A combination of being a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and possessing some of the most devastating knockout power in the division, the fight doesnt bode well for the Ohio native. Expect Sao Carlos native to find his range sometime in the second round and knockout “The Hammer” Silva via second round knockout. Fabio Maldonado vs. Joey Beltran Lynch In a contest that has “Fight Of The Night” honors written all over it, 33-year old Maldonado takes on “The Mexicutioner” Beltran. With 23-knockouts between the two of them, its no secret this will be a standup affair, but the question becomes who will get the better of the exchanges? Despite losing to Glover Teixeira last October, the Brazilian showed that hes extremely durable in that fight and that should serve him well in this bout. You should see Maldonado display more technical boxing than his foe and connect on his chin sometime in the second round for the knockout win. Maldonado via second round TKO Rousimar Palhares vs. Mike Pierce Lynch After back to back losses against Alan Belcher and Hector Lombard, the Brazilian Palhares makes his welterweight debut against Mike Pierce. Physically these two fighters are identical in height and reach, but stylistically the ADCC silver medalist is far superior on the mat. Pierce is a former NCAA Division I wrestler and that should serve him well if hes able to keep Palhares against the cage and off the ground. It will be interesting to see how the weight cut affects the 33-year old as well, who at times was bullied in the middleweight division because of his size. Because Pierce is on a four-fight win streak and doesnt have to deal with a first time weight cut, I give him the nod over three rounds to take home a decision. Pierce via unanimous decision Raphael Assuncao vs. T.J. Dillashaw Lynch In what arguably is the most competitive matchup on the main card, 31-year old Assuncao goes to war with former NCAA Division I wrestler Dillashaw. Expect the Brazilian Assuncao to immediately try and take his American foe on the ground early on, as he boasts nine submission victories. For the TUF 14 runner up, its another chance to display his much improved striking, thanks to the addition of striking coach Duane Ludwig. Both fighters are on four-fight win streaks and could easily emerge as the next title challenger to current interim champion Renan Barao. Expect Dillishaw to use his wrestling and superior standup to earn himself a decision and a shot at the bantamweight title. Dillashaw via unanimous decision Undercard Picks: Dias, Alcantara, Cabral, Cariaso, Whiteley Also be sure to tune into the “Weigh-In” on TSN Radio 1290 Winnipeg every Saturday as myself, Jordan and Big Marv Timog go toe to toe discussing the hottest topics in MMA. ’ ’ ’

FORTALEZA, Brazil — The Dutch were worried about the oppressive heat at Arena Castelao, and they left it with the stifling hot conditions to thank for a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals. An inspired tactical change during the second of two official stoppages led to a late goal from Netherlands forward Wesley Sneijder and an injury-time penalty from Klaas Jan Huntelaar in a dramatic 2-1 victory over Mexico on Sunday. “I moved to Plan B at the cooling break,” said Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal, soon to be the manager at Manchester United. “That is a good way to take advantage of those breaks.” Despite scoring 10 goals in three group matches, the Dutch again started the match with a defensive 5-3-2 system. Van Gaal made the switch to a more attacking 4-3-3 formation in the second half and tweaked it further when referee Pedro Proenca stopped the match in the 76th minute to allow players to rehydrate. That helped turn the match around and extend Mexicos second-round curse to six straight World Cups. “Unbelievable,” said Arjen Robben, the Netherlands forward that earned the late penalty. “Five minutes from full time, we were out.” Instead of the Dutch players, it was the Mexicans who wilted in the heat as they conceded twice as many goals in the final minutes of the match as they had in the entire group stage. “The humidity was against us, but we were fresher and fitter than the Mexicans,” Van Gaal said. “Yes, we escaped. But we showed that we could create more chances with 4-3-3, and the players handled this shift very well.” The Dutch will next face Costa Rica in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Salvador, and may have to play without midfielder Nigel de Jong, who was substituted in the ninth minute with a groin injury. Mexico coach Miguel Herrera, one of the most popular characters at the World Cup because of his emotive ways on the sidelines, blamed Proenca for the loss and accused Robben of diving under a challenge from Rafael Marquez to earn the penalty. “Today it was the man with the whistle who eliminated us from the World Cup,” Herrera said. "If a referee invents a penalty, youre out of the World Cup. “I hope they have a look at what happened and that this gentleman goes home just like we are.” Marquez said Robben admitted that it was a bad call, but added that the Dutchman thought he should have been awarded a spot kick for an earlier challenge. “I spoke with him after the match and he told me that it was not a penalty,” Marquez said. “He said that the first foul was a penalty and that one was not called.” Mexico has now advanced to the second round at the World Cup six straight times and not reached the quarterfinals. The last time the team made it that far was as host of the 1986 tournament. Giovani Dos Santos gave the Mexicans the lead in the 48th minute after a goalless first half, but Sneijder equalized with a hard shot in the 88th. It was the first time Sneijder, who scored five goals at the last World Cup in South Africa, has found the net in Brazil. Robben, who has already scored three goals for the Dutch at this years tournament, then earned the penalty in the fourth minute of injury time but he handed the ball to Huntelaar. “You dont know when your chance will come, but it was today, and so you grab it with both hands,” said Huntelaar, who replaced captain Robin van Persie in the 76th minute. “And it was fantastic.” For Mexico, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was again the star player, pulling off two more great saves after playing a key role in holding Brazil to a 0-0 draw in Group A. But he couldnt block Sneijders shot and guessed wrong when diving in an attempt to stop Huntelaars penalty. “It isnt easy to go out this way, the way this match went,” Ochoa said. “Its just very hard to deal with when victory escapes you this way.” . TORONTO — Jonathan Bernier tried to stretch at every opportunity. Tuesday night marked the Toronto Maple Leafs starting goaltenders first game back after missing five straight with a groin injury. Bernier managed to get through it despite facing 48 shots in a 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues. “A lot of work. But I felt OK,” Bernier said. “It was a little sore obviously, but I was just trying to get it loose a little bit in between whistles and timeouts.” Bernier aggravated the groin injury March 13 in the first period in Los Angeles. James Reimer relieved him and beat the Kings, then lost five straight starts. With the Leafs season looking like it was going off the rails after three straight losses, Bernier pushed himself too hard at Fridays practice with the hope of returning for the weekend. A setback at that point delayed his return. By Monday, Bernier felt better but needed Tuesdays morning skate to know for sure. When he experienced no soreness, the decision was made to start against the Blues. Asked if he wouldve done the same in the 10th game of the season and did not rush back, Bernier responded: “Ah, I mean you always want to be back as soon as possible.” Bernier said he would be able to play back-to-back games moving forward. The Leafs visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night before returning home to face the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night. The process of managing this groin injury, the first of his career, will be an ongoing process. “We got a good staff and obviously a lot of stretching and take care of my body — lots of rest,” Bernier said. Even in a losing effort, the Leafs were glad to get Bernier back because without him they mightve not even been in the game. “He was outstanding in there,” winger James van Riemsdyk said. “He made big save after big save for us.” . The figure is $119 million higher than a previous profit figure reported in April, but is still dwarfed by the government subsidies given to the organizing committee, valued at $420 million in December. The Sochi organizing committee said its projected surplus is a record for any games. The 1984 Los Angeles Olympics produced a surplus of $232 million. The 2008 Beijing Games claimed a profit of over $146 million, while the 2012 London Olympics recorded an $8 million surplus. The surplus is only from the Sochi organizing committee, which had an operations budget of about $2 billion. It does not cover any coonstruction or infrastructure costs.dddddddddddd Russias overall spending for the games totalled $51 billion. Sochi organizing committee chief Dmitry Chernyshenko said in a statement that all the profit would be “oriented towards the development of sport in Russia,” with plans to provide “a significant sum” to Paralympic sports from the profits, plus a lump sum of $17.5 million. The organizing committee promised final results by the end of the year, by which time it expects to wind up its operations and be dissolved. As well as government subsidies, the organizing committee also earned money from merchandizing, ticket sales and sponsorships, including from Russian state-owned companies. ’ ’ ’

WASHINGTON — New Yorks Cam Talbot and Washingtons Philipp Grubauer, two backup goalies making it hard for their coaches to keep them on the bench, combined for 68 saves on Friday night. Talbot came up one short. Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist, and Eric Fehr scored the tiebreaking goal with 5:09 left to lift the Capitals over the Rangers 3-2. Moments after New York defenceman Dan Girardis drive hit the post, Fehr took a pass from Backstrom during 4-on-4 play, skated in, and beat Talbot from the right circle for his sixth goal. “It was just a quick release that beat me,” Talbot said. “Its (a save) Ive got to make, especially in a situation like that where its a tie game with five minutes to go and were pressing for the win.” Mike Green added a goal, and Grubauer had 37 saves for Washington, which had dropped two straight before taking the finale of a three-game homestand. “Its huge,” Grubauer said. “Every win is, because I havent played many games. Every win is a great feeling for me.” Grubauer improved to 5-1-1 in eight games since being called up to Washington. “Right now, its only been eight games, and goalies — like everybody — have their waves,” Capitals coach Adam Oates said. “Right now it looks like hes playing with confidence, and hes giving the players confidence.” Benoit Pouliot and Carl Hagelin scored for New York, which had won two straight. It was the Rangers first game after a nine-game homestand. “Its disappointing, obviously. I thought we played a pretty strong game,” Girardi said. “That last (goal) is tough. I hit the post then they come right back down and score.” Talbot, making his third straight start in place of No. 1 goalie Henrik Lundqvist, stopped 31 shots in the opener of a five-game road trip. He came in with an 8-2 record and a 1.60 goals against average in 12 games, and won the final two games of the homestand. Backstrom continued his impressive December and has 17 points in his last eight games. He began the night fourth in the NHL in points and third in assists, “Hes handling the puck with confidence, and hes making great plays,” Fehr said. “Its what we expect of him, but its pretty unbelievable to watch.” Hagelin tied the game with a short-handed goal 17 seconds into the third period. He took a feed from Ryan McDonagh, skated in alone on Grubauer, and scored with a backhanded shot. The Rangers outshot Washington 14-7 in the opening period and had two power plays to one for the Capitals, but trailed 1-0. With Rick Nash off for tripping, Martin Erat sent a pass to Green at the point for a one-timed shot that got past Talbot on the glove side at 6:55 for his third goal. New York lost defenceman Anton Stralman to an undisclosed injury in the period and played the remainder of the game with five defencemen. “You go from six to five defencemen and youre top three have to log a tremendous amount of minutes,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said, “Might make it a little bit more challenging in terms of defending and attacking, but thats not an excuse. Those are things that happen.” The Rangers tied it on a power play when Pouliot deflected Brad Richards shot from the point past Grubauer at 1:37 of the second period. It was Pouliots sixth goal of the season and third in four games. The Capitals appeared to retake the lead midway through the second, but a replay review showed that Fehrs shot bounced off the post, went behind Talbot, but didnt cross the goal line. After a flurry of saves by Grubauer late in the period, the Capitals went ahead 2-1 when Steve Olesky pushed a loose puck ahead to Backstrom. Talbot could only get a piece of the shot from the right circle that produced Backstroms 10th goal with 1:05 left in the period. “Hes playing great, hes obviously in a groove,” Oates said. “We count on him so much for so many touches in a game.” Lundqvist, a three-time All-Star, signed a seven-year, $59.5 million contract extension on Dec. 4 to become the highest paid NHL goalie. Since then, he is 2-4-2 with a 3.41 goals-against average in eight games. Lundqvist lost his most recent appearance 5-3 to the New York Islanders last Friday, giving up four goals on 19 shots. NOTES: Alex Ovechkin failed to score a goal for the ninth straight game against the Rangers, including the playoffs. … Capitals C Brooks Laich (groin), who returned Monday after missing 11 games, was out of the lineup. … RW Erat has 14 assists in 35 games, but hasnt scored a goal. "Well see where it goes. Hes played 13 seasons with Montreal. DUNEDIN, Fla. — Given a day to prepare, prized Houston infield prospect Carlos Correa delivered in a big way. Told that he would start, the 19-year-old Correa hit his first two home runs of spring training and led the Astros over the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5 Thursday. Manager Bo Porter told Correa, the overall No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft, on Wednesday night that he would be in the lineup. “A lot of time with young players, youll go up to them and tell them that, because you kind of want to see how theyre going to respond,” Porter said. “And he responded the way you would want your player to respond.” “The way he performed today was pretty impressive,” he said. Correa and Jon Singleton connected off Blue Jays starter Esmil Rogers for back-to-back homers in the third inning. Correa connected again in the eighth, hitting a two-run drive to centre field off Neil Wagner. “I was just focused,” Correa said. “He told me I was going to start today.” “I came out here with the mentality to play hard, play the game the right way and do my best all the time on the field,” the shortstop said. Porter said while Correa still has room for improvement, his work ethic has been outstanding. “Hes a focused individual,” Porter said. “Hes one of the first ones to the ballpark, hes the last one to leave. His attention to detail is mature for his age, but thats why he plays the game at the speed he plays it — because hes confident.” Astros starter Dallas Keuchel yielded six hits and struck out two in four scoreless innings. The left-hander, who was 6-10 with a 5.15 ERA last season, has not allowed a run in three starts this spring. Anthony Gose finished 2 for 2 with a triple and double, and scored three runs for Toronto. Edwin Encarnacion, Adam Lind, Melky Cabrera and Dan Johnson also doubled for the Blue Jays. STARTING TIME Blue Jays: Rogers, a candidate for the fifth spot in Torontos rotation, allowed four earned runs, walked two and struck out six in three innings. Rogers struggled with command of his changeup, which led to Singletons home run. “The only way I can get better is when I pitch and throw the changeup,” he said. “I just have to make my pitches and work a little bit more out of the stretch and try to get my command out of the stretch because Im a little quick when I have runners on base.” Astros: Keuchel said throwing against high wind gusts was tough, but he was happy to keep solid command on all of his pitches. “Always got to be a little happy with throwing up some zeros, but that wind was kind of a challenge there in the first inning,” he said.dddddddddddd “You know, Im warming up in the bullpen and always getting loose and you never know how the wind is going to respond. But I think I had a little bit more movement on my two-seam and my changeup, so that was kind of nice,” he said. TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: Manager John Gibbons said left-handed starter J.A. Happ (sore back) is scheduled to throw three innings in a minor league game on Friday in Dunedin. Astros: Top pitching prospect Mark Appel could make his first appearance of the spring next week. Appel, the first overall selection by Houston in last years amateur draft, underwent an appendectomy in January. Porter said reliever Jesse Crain (right biceps surgery) is continuing to make progress in the organizations training program and his arm strength is increasing. The right-hander had an 0.74 ERA in 36 2-3 innings with the Chicago White Sox last season. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in July, but did not pitch because of the injury. RIGHT ON Porter said L.J. Hoes is still in the mix for the starting spot in right field despite a hip injury early in camp. George Springer, Marc Krauss and J.D. Martinez also are in contention. Porter said Hoes, acquired from the Baltimore Orioles at the trade deadline last season for right-handed starter Bud Norris, played well enough down the stretch to get a look this spring. “Hes got about two weeks to get ready for opening day,” Porter said. “L.J. is a guy thats always gotten on base (and) has great minor league numbers. He came here last year and was a great asset to our ballclub the second half of the season and we believe hes going to be able to help us a lot this year.” Hoes started in left field against the Blue Jays. He began a relay in the first that nabbed Jose Bautista at the plate when the slugger attempted to score from first base on a double by Edwin Encarnacion. MELKMAN IN THE MIDDLE? Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera could see time in centre field during the regular season now that he has fully recovered from complications stemming from a benign tumour, which was removed from his lower back last September. Gibbons said he will probably only use Cabrera there against a tough left-hander, or if Colby Rasmus needs a day off. “Thats where he played today and he played there in Lakeland the other day and did a nice job,” Gibbons said. “He only got a couple balls, but hes done it before. When he came up with the Yankees, he played centre field and he played it in Kansas City and played it very well.” ’ ’ ’

On Tuesday, Canada Soccer unveiled its new technical development vision for soccer in Canada, entitled Canada Soccer Pathway. Your Goals. Our Game. The pathway consists of three streams of play: recreational, competitive and EXCEL (the high performance level of the game). On hand to discuss the pathway were Canada Soccer Technical Director, Tony Fonseca, womens national team head coach, John Herdman, and Canada Soccer Long-Term Player Development Manager, Sylvie Béliveau. According to Béliveau, the pathway is “built around the principles of long-term player development and encourages lifelong participation. At Canada Soccer, we believe all players deserve the best possible soccer experience, and our Canada Soccer Pathway is designed to place their needs front and centre at each and every stage.” The creation of different streams in youth soccer is long overdue, and a move that is likely to be met with approval across the country. Clubs are the primary delivery agents of the recreational and competitive streams, and in the coming weeks, Canada Soccer will release a national curriculum that supports coaches working with players in the first three stages of LTPD. Canada Soccer hopes to have the curriculum for the rest of the stages ready for release by the end of the summer. The national curriculum will be a valuable resource for coaches – especially for the thousands of volunteer coaches across the country working with young players. The curriculum will contain a “Preferred Training Model” that incorporates “station work”, so that clubs that are heavily reliant on volunteer coaches can maximize their resources in order to provide the best development environment possible. The preferred model allows for a four-parent collective approach to training, and frees up the volunteer parent-coach from trying to impart too much technical or tactical information in one session. There are many benefits of taking such an approach at the early stages of player development. It maximizes the availability of coaching and facility resources, it aids volunteer parent coaches by allowing them to pool their knowledge, and it places players into an environment that meets their learning needs, where shorter, diverse sessions are broken up into varying activities of different intensity. There are some questions that still need to be addressed with such an approach, though. Utilizing a “station work” approach to training requires guidance and oversight from a trained facilitator or coach educator. Do the majority of clubs across the country that are working with players between the ages of 4-12 have coach educators on staff? If not, how does Canada Soccer train coaches to be able to perform this role? Is the long-awaited “Childrens License” that has been in development finally going to be given the resources it needs to be completed? The Preferred Training Model suggests that an assessment-based coaching qualification such as this is required, so one would hope that its completion would be given top priority. More pressing questions arise when one looks further along the Canada Soccer Pathway. Given the significance of HP (high-performance) leagues in the Pathway, will Canada Soccer assume direct control of these leagues? If not, how will Canada Soccer ensure that such leagues will be open to both non-profit community clubs and for-profit private academies? If Canada Soccer is going to leave the operation of HP leagues to the respective provincial associations, how will Canada Soccer ensure that political forces do not undermine technical decisions – like the inclusion of private academies? If we are serious about creating the best possible environments for player development in Canada, then politics have no place in our technical decision-making process. Among the documents released on Tuesday was a community guide for long-term player development, as well as a womens EXCEL program guide for players and parents. Both documents provide some valuable insight into the direction of the game in Canada. Those expecting Tuesdays announcement to contain the answers for all of our developmental woes will feel very underwhelmed. Our problems run deep, and require a series of detailed, long-term solutions. While this is just the first step, it is important to remember that every long journey starts with a single step. I, for one, am hopeful that this step will take us in the right direction. . The Heisman Trophy winner has been hired as a college football analyst for the new SEC Network in a return to his Florida glory days, but he still hopes to play quarterback in the NFL. Tebow will appear on “SEC Nation,” a pregame show that will travel to a different campus each week after the channel launches in August. The multiyear deal “will not preclude him from continuing to pursue playing opportunities in the NFL,” ESPN, which runs the network, said in a statement Monday. Tebow did not play in the league in 2013 after he was cut by the Patriots in August. In the span of just over one season, he went from a national sensation who led the Denver Broncos to the playoffs, to a backup, to out of the NFL. “While I continue to pursue my dream of playing quarterback in the NFL, this is an amazing opportunity to be part of the unparalleled passion of college football and the SEC,” Tebow said in a statement released by ESPN. ESPNN senior vice-president Justin Connolly called Tebow an “SEC icon with a national fan base and broad appeal.dddddddddddd” Tebow will make his ESPN debut during pregame coverage of the BCS championship Jan. 6. After winning the 2007 Heisman and two national championships for the Gators in the SEC, Tebow became one of the biggest stories in the NFL in his second season. He went 7-1 in his first eight starts in 2011 then threw an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime to give the Broncos a 29-23 playoff win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. But he was still dogged by doubts about his passing ability, and Denver traded him that off-season to the New York Jets after acquiring Peyton Manning. He languished on the bench while coach Rex Ryan ignored fans calls for Tebow to replace a struggling Mark Sanchez. Tebow threw just eight passes, ran only 32 times and was cut last April 29. For six weeks no team wanted him until the Patriots signed him to a low-risk, two-year contract with no guaranteed money. ’ ’ ’

MINNEAPOLIS — All-Star forward Kevin Love missed Minnesotas game against Portland because of a bruised left quadriceps, and starting point guard Kevin Martin also was out Saturday night because of a broken left thumb that will sideline him indefinitely. During halftime, Love told The Associated Press he would receive treatment Saturday night and hoped to play Monday night against Houston. “I knew that my quad was bothering me pretty bad so I went out there and tried to move around a little bit and it just wasnt quite right,” Love said. Love limped noticeably a couple hours earlier, but the team didnt announce he would miss the game until just before tipoff. Earlier, he told reporters he took a knee from New Orleans Greg Steimsma on Friday night in Minnesotas road loss. Before the injury was announced, Love — averaging 25.6 points and 13.3 rebounds — said he had no plans of skipping the All-Star game. “There was a number of things that happened late in the fourth quarter, getting back late last night, travelling and then just not getting enough treatment before tonight,” Love said. “So well just get back and do some more treatment tonight get in tomorrow and then hopefully be ready Monday night.” Martin was hurt Friday in the closing minutes of the Timberwolves 98-91 loss. X-rays taken Saturday morning revealed the fracture. Martin is averaging 19 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 32.3. The Timberwolves also are without starting centre Nikola Pekovic. Hes sidelined by bursitis in his right ankle. All three players were in street clothes behind the bench. “Thats like making up 60 points there and a number of rebounds and a lot of firepower,” Love said. “So we just need to get everybody back quickly as we can and I think Ill probably be the first.” . Switzerland won the Davis Cup first-round tie against Serbia after Marco Chiudinelli and Michael Lammer beat Nenad Zimonjic and Filip Krajinovic in doubles for an unbeatable 3-0 lead on Saturday. A confident Chiudinelli and Lammer defeated veteran doubles player Zimonjic and young Krajinovic 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2. The Serb pair fought hard and appeared even, forcing a tiebreak in the first set and winning the second. But Zimonjic and Krajinovic failed to convert two break points at 5-5 in the third set, allowing the Swiss to regain confidence and cruise to victory in the fourth set. “We wanted to get the three points, we have the victory already on Saturday,” Lammer said. "We are in the quarterfinals for the first time in a long time, which is very exciting for Switzerland.ddddddddddddquot; Serbia captain Bogdan Obradovic said: “Our guys did their best, but didnt have luck.” On Friday, Swiss stars Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka won the opening singles. Federer was making his first Davis Cup appearance since 2012. Serbia, last years finalist, was playing without its three top players, Novak Djokovic, Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki. The second-ranked Djokovic decided to rest after losing to Wawrinka in the Australian Open quarterfinals, while Tipsarevic was nursing a heel injury and Troicki was serving a 12-month doping ban for failing to appear at a test. That meant 102nd-ranked Dusan Lajovic was Serbias highest-ranked team member. Coach Obradovic said he hoped the top players will be back next year. “All that is left is to reorganize and fight to stay in the World Group,” he said. ’ ’ ’

ARLINGTON, Texas - The two-time American League champion Texas Rangers have made their first off-season move, picking up the 2012 club option for right-hander Colby Lewis. Lewis will get US$3.25 million next season, which will be his third back with the Rangers since returning from Japan. The move was made Monday, three days after the Rangers ended their second consecutive season with a loss in the World Series. Lewis was 14-10 with a 4.40 ERA in the regular season and 1-1 with a 3.04 ERA in the post-season. Later Monday, Texas exercised a $1 million option on right-handed reliever Yoshinori Tateyama, who was 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 39 appearances this season. BUFFALO, N.Y. — Sergei Bobrovsky and the Columbus Blue Jackets keep finding ways to win. The Blue Jackets gave up a game-tying goal with 24.9 seconds to play, but used Ryan Johansens shootout goal to extend their winning streak to six games in a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. “Every night we have to find a way to get points,” said Bobrovsky, who made 26 saves and didnt allow a goal in the shootout. “Thats why we play. Its our goal to be in the playoffs and we have to take points to be there. It doesnt matter how and who we play.” Columbus rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to take the lead on a Brandon Dubinsky goal in the third period, but had to regroup again after Myers goal sent the game to overtime. “Its a tough thing to give up a goal in the last minute of the game but this is a group thats faced adversity all season long,” Dubinsky said. "And instead of cowering to it and conceding to just one point, we stuck our heads down and went after them. “Im really proud of this bunch and the way we stuck together through some adversity.” David Savard and Matt Calvert also scored in regulation for Columbus. Tyler Myers had two goals for Buffalo, and Drew Stafford also scored. The Sabres have lost three straight. The Blue Jackets winning streak matches the longest in franchise history set on April 3, 2006. “Right now for me its just a stat,” Columbus coach Todd Richards said. “Weve done a good job putting ourselves back in the fight and right in the middle of it.” Columbus improved to 24-20-4 after winning just 14 of its first 35 games. Dubinsky said the win streak speaks volumes of his teams improvement. “It says were finding ways to win games and were getting points,” Dubinsky said. "Were getting some swagger here and some confidence. The Blue Jackets played Friday night at home against Washington as Buffalo looked to capitalize on a hot start from the line of Tyler Ennis, Matt Moulson and Drew Stafford. The Sabres struck just 59 seconds into the game when Moulson sent a soft pass across the ice to Myers, who had crept in from the right point and lifted a shot over Bobrovsky to put Buffalo up 1-0. Columbus countered when a one-time shot from Savard off the right half wall caught Ryan Miller out of position to tie the score at 6:19. The tie lasted just 28 seconds. A poor Blue Jackets breakout left Ennis alone in front off Bobrovsky.dddddddddddd The Sabres centre slid the puck to Stafford at the left post, and he slid it into the open net at 6:47. “They played a tough game last night,” said Ennis, who finished with two assists and seven shots on goal. “We wanted to jump on them early.” Miller made an athletic save on a 2-on-1 break midway through the first period, reaching behind his body to make a glove save on RJ Umberger. He finished with 32 saves. The Blue Jackets tied it at 2 after a Myers boarding penalty gave them the games first power play. Calvert whiffed on a backhand attempt, but pushed a second chance past Miller at 12:44 of the first. Buffalo had a goal disallowed 24 seconds into the second period. Moulson was judged to have used a distinct kicking motion to put the puck behind Bobrovsky. “The league is screaming for goals and all of a sudden, I dont know how you can kick it and try to stop at the same time,” Sabres interim head coach Ted Nolan said. A power-play goal gave Columbus its first lead at 11:21, as Dubinsky took advantage of crowded Buffalo crease with his rebound goal. The Blue Jackets needed a right pad save from Bobrovsky on Moulson during a late Sabres power play, but finished the second period with a 3-2 lead. Buffalo didnt score on its first three power plays, and the last was an abbreviated one when Stafford was hauled down behind the Columbus net with 36.4 seconds to play in regulation. Nolan called timeout, Buffalo won the faceoff in Columbus zone and Myers sent a wrist shot past Bobrovsky. Myers almost scored a third goal in overtime, but his low shot went wide of the goal. Johansens game-deciding goal required patience. Miller stayed with the third-year mans shootout attempt until an opening appeared just as Johansen reached the crease. “I thought the play was dead, I really did,” Richards said. “When he got there, I thought, Oh, hes got nothing and he got it up quick on his glove side.” The Blue Jackets are off until Tuesday, when theyll host Los Angeles in the first of a three-game homestand. Buffalo is 6-1-3 in its past 10 home games after beginning the season 3-12-1 at First Niagara Center. Theyll next face Florida on Tuesday in the second of three straight at home. NOTES: Defenceman Fedor Tyutin was the only scratch for Columbus. … The game was the 300th of Myers career. … Columbus RW Corey Tropp played his first game against the Sabres since Buffalo waived him on Nov. 27. ’ ’ ’

Every night of the Stanley Cup playoffs, TSN hockey analyst and former NHL goaltender Jamie McLennan breaks down each goalies performance. Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh (3) – He made a huge glove save on Ryan Murray with 63 seconds left. He was looking for a response (mentally) after he was down 3-1 and made two big saves – one on Ryan Johansen and one on Mark Letestu. All eyes were on him to see if he could hold up and he passed his first test. Sergei Bobrovsky, Columbus (2) – Brandon Sutters game-winning goal wasnt great. Also, Matt Niskanens power play goal went through the legs. He was not at the top of his expected game and has more to give. Carey Price, Montreal (3) – Price made three huge saves in overtime (on Alex Killorn, Teddy Purcell and Nikita Kucherov), on a night where he faced few shots and had a few goals that – by his standards – he would stop on a regular night. Anders Lindback, Tampa Bay (3) – Lindback gave them a chance to win, as the Habs had most of the shots and chances in Game 1. The goals by Lars Eller and Thomas Vanek goals were not his best work, but he made more than enough stops to keep them in the game. Frederik Andersen, Anaheim (3) – He made two big saves early in the game on Jamie Benn and Alex Chiasson. Not much could be done on two of the three goals he allowed, as Chiasson was a screen. But he was very good in tight on Wednesday night using his feet and post protection. Kari Lehtonen, Dallas (2) – Lehtonen did not get much help or chances on three of the four goals he allowed. He had rebound issues all night, looked unsettled at times on perimeter shots and was deep on screen shots where hes usually more aggressive. LONDON — After a gloomy start to 2014 for English Premier League teams in Europe, Tottenham achieved what five rivals failed to do — win. Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City all opened the Champions League knockout phase with first-leg losses, while Chelsea drew. But on Thursday, straight after Swansea was knocked out of the Europa League, Tottenham overturned a 1-0 deficit against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk to win 3-1 at White Hart Lane and advance to the round of 16. Roman Zozulya headed the Ukrainian side in front at the start of the second half but, after Christian Eriksen levelled from a free kick, he was dismissed for head-butting Jan Vertonghen in the 62nd minute. Within six minutes, Emmanuel Adebayor scored twice to set up a meeting with Benfica, which beat PAOK Salonika 3-0 to go through 4-0 on aggregate. The last 16 will see two meetings of national rivals that should lift Europes less illustrious competition, with Juventus facing Fiorentina, and Sevilla playing Real Betis. Juventus replicated its 2-0 first-leg victory over Trabzonspor in Turkey, with goals from Arturo Vidal and Dani Osvaldo. And Fiorentina was held to 1-1 by Esbjerg of Denmark but advanced 4-2 on aggregate.dddddddddddd. Swanseas loss at Napoli gave Italy a third team in the next round and kept Rafa Benitez on course to win back-to-back Europa League titles. The Spanish manager, who lifted the trophy with Chelsea last season, saw his new team emerge 3-1 winners over Swansea after a goalless first leg in south Wales. Napoli will next face Porto, which drew 2-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt to advance on away goals with a 5-5 aggregate draw. But Serie A rival Lazio went out, drawing 3-3 at Ludogorets after losing 1-0 at home. Three Spanish teams also remain in the competition. Sevilla beat Maribor 2-1 to complete a 4-3 aggregate win over the Slovenian side, and Betis advanced 3-1 on aggregate after winning 2-0 at Rubin Kazan. Valencia relied on its 2-0 away win to oust Dynamo Kyiv after a scoreless draw in Spain, and will next face Ludogorets. Lyon beat Chornomorets Odesa 1-0 to setup a meeting with Viktoria Plzen after the Czech side beat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-2 on aggregate. Ajax conceded another three goals against Red Bull Salzburg, losing 3-1 to allow the hosts to advance 6-1 overall. BUFFALO, N.Y. — Sabres forward Drew Stafford has witnessed plenty of turmoil during his eight seasons in Buffalo. Following Staffords rookie season in 2007, the Sabres lost co-captains Chris Drury and Danny Briere to free agency. Last year, long-time coach Lindy Ruff was fired. What occurred during a 24-hour stretch this weekend has become the topper, leaving Stafford shaking his head in disbelief after returning to practice Sunday. “I thought I had seen it all,” Stafford said. “But, I guess, theres always room for more surprises. And this ones definitely a shocker.” On Friday, Stafford had difficulty keeping his emotions in check after star goalie Ryan Miller was traded to St. Louis. A day later, he was blindsided upon learning of Pat LaFontaines abrupt resignation as president of hockey operations. “Its tough,” Stafford said. “Its another challenge, a little more adversity that youve got to put on top of the pile.” As if the Sabres (18-34-8) needed any more distractions during a season in which upheaval and dysfunction have been common threads for the NHLs last-place team. At 2-13-1, Buffalo got off to its worst start in team history. Leading scorer Thomas Vanek was traded to the Islanders in October. The Sabres opened 0-8-1 at home, before enjoying their first win on Nov. 12. Three days later, general manager Darcy Regier and coach Ron Rolston were fired. Now this. Miller getting dealt along with captain Steve Ott, were widely anticipated moves because both were in the final years of their contracts. LaFontaines departure was a surprise, coming a little more than three months after his arrival was hailed as a positive turning point for a struggling team. “Its a lot for our fans to swallow in a short amount of time,” Sabres president Ted Black said. “It creates uncertainty. And its something that fans are going to be upset by.” Black failed to divulge any further details regarding the resignation except to reiterate LaFontaine wanted to resume his previous role working with the National Hockey League. Black called the resignation a disappointment, but denied speculation that there had been any discord between LaFontaine and front-office staff or owner Terry Pegula. LaFontaine has not returned messages, and on Sunday, his cell-phone mailbox was full. Whats clear is that his departure marks the latest setback for a franchise that has had difficulty establishing a winning course in the three years since Pegula bought the team and vowed to build an immediate contender. The Sabres are in jeopardy of missing the playoffs for a third straight season, and in the midst of a rebuilding plan that began with the purge of numerous high-priced veterans last year. Black said the objective has not changed, and the teams transformation will continue under general manager Tim Murray. “Pat was here for three months. It is one person,” Black said. “I dont know if that impacts the greater mission or will deter us.” Murray was hired by LaFontaine in January, and now assumes much of his former bosss responsibilities. It was Murray, who negotiated the Miller trade. And he is also fielding offers to make further deals before the leagues trade deadline on Wednesday. Next on Murrays priority list is negotiating a contract extension with interim coach Ted Nolan, who was brought in by LaFontaine for a second stint in Buffalo. “We want Teddy to be our coach going forward,” Murray said. “If he wants to be here, I want him to be our coach.” The question is whether Nolan wants to stay, something he left open following practice Sunday. “Right now, its not about my contract. Its about the situation thats happening,” Nolan said. “Its about whats transpired in this organization, what happened to a very dear friend. And well leave it at that.” So much for the momentum the Sabres were supposed to be enjoying with their first three-game winning streak in preparing to play Dallas on Monday. “We traded our franchise player, we traded our captain. Thats tough enough as it is. And then all of a sudden the situation with Patty,” Nolan said. “Right now, I have to put my personal situation behind right now and really concentrate on those 22 guys here.” Informed of Nolans comments, Murray said, “Im not going to beg anybody to come work here.” Murray said its his objective to continue rebuilding the Sabres, which is what he was hired to do with or without LaFontaine. “I cant make choices for him. He makes his own choices,” Murray said. “Im not one to dwell on what-ifs and sentiment and all that. But Ill forever be grateful that he hired me.” . — Dwight Howard vs. . – The Abbotsford Heat hope a last-minute goal keeps their season alive for more than one extra game. http://www.hockeylightningstore.com/authentic-t…. – Tennessee Titans safety Michael Griffin, and New York Jets defensive players Muhammad Wilkerson and Quinton Coples all have been fined for plays during last Sundays game at Nashville. The Frenchman, who won in Wengen last year, timed 49.94 seconds in falling snow, 1.22 faster than Ted Ligety of the United States. Natko Zrncic-Dim of Croatia was third, trailing Pinturault by 1.50. Ligety, the super-combined world champion, got the best conditions skiing first before the course quickly deteriorated. “To run first was definitely an advantage. The snow was pretty bad up there,” Ligety said. “I need to be faster than that against Pinturault and against guys like (Romed) Baumann.” Baumann, who earned bronze behind Ligety at the worlds last February, was fifth Friday, 2.15 behind Pinturault. Olympic champion Bode Miller started wearing bib No. 25, yet placed seventh with 3.43 to make up in the afternoon downhill run on the adjoining hill. “It didnt feel like slalom,” Miller said. “Obviiously three seconds is a long way.ddddddddddddIm going to go for it and well see.” Four years ago, Miller ended a run of poor results by winning the race in Wengen, and followed up one month later with super-combined gold at the Vancouver Olympics. Organizers ran the slalom first Friday to give snow and cloud cover time to clear before a downhill run on a shortened, 3.1-kilometre (1.9-mile) Lauberhorn course. Downhill specialist Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway was 22nd, 4.32 behind after starting No. 15. “The ruts go out from the gate and never stop. Its impossible to stay tight to the gate,” Svindal said. “Four seconds faster than Pinturault (in downhill)? Thats going to be a tough one.” Svindal needs a top-10 finish to take the overall standings lead from Austrian rival Marcel Hirscher, who skips speed events. Ivica Kostelic of Croatia, a six-time winner in slalom and super-combined in Wengen, went out early after straddling a gate. ’ ’ ’

SQUAW VALLEY, Calif. — Olympic slalom gold medallist Mikaela Shiffrin won the giant slalom at the U.S. Alpine Championships by nearly 2 seconds on Thursday. The 19-year-old Shiffrin, who is based in Eagle-Vail, Colo., won her third U.S. title overall, after slalom championships in 2011 and 2012. She completed Thursdays two runs in 2 minutes, 30.93 seconds. The race was open to women from other countries, and Marie-Michele Gagnon of Lac-Etchemin, Que., finished second, 1.88 seconds behind. Julia Mancuso, a four-time Olympic medallist who lives in Squaw Valley, was third. Shiffrin became the youngest slalom champion in Olympic history last month at the Sochi Games, then returned to the World Cup circuit to wrap up a second consecutive slalom season title. The pitcher left no doubt the second time he faced Colorado Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa. Bumgarner hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high five runs to overcome a shaky outing on the mound, sending the San Francisco Giants to a 6-5 victory Friday night. Bumgarner hit a sacrifice fly off De La Rosa in the third inning, then connected for a towering home run in the fourth. It was Bumgarners third career homer and only the second grand slam by a Giants pitcher since the team relocated from New York to San Francisco in 1958. “They dont really expect a whole lot out of pitchers so we get to go up there with no pressure,” Bumgarner said. “Its easier to hit that way, but at the same time its the hardest thing to do in sports.” Shawn Estes is the only other San Francisco pitcher to hit a grand slam. He did it against Montreal on May 24, 2000, in an 18-0 blowout of the Expos. Bumgarners homer came with the Giants trailing 3-1, and his five RBIs wound up being the difference in the game. “Thats quite a night,” San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. “He wasnt quite as sharp (on the mound) but he found a way to win the game and he did it with his bat. Good for him.” Brandon Crawford added two hits and scored twice for the Giants. Carlos Gonzalez homered for Colorado, which played short-handed after injuries sidelined two of its top hitters. “Any time youre facing Bumgarner you know its going to be a tough at-bat,” Gonzalez said. “He threw me a 3-2 curveball and theres no way Im sitting on it. I just reacted … but things changed after that.” Bumgarner (2-0) struck out seven and walked two in six erratic innings. He allowed nine hits and appeared headed for a short night until the Giants scored five runs in the fourth. His home run came on a day when both teams were minus key players. Troy Tulowitzkis sore quadriceps kept him out of Colorados starting lineup. He pinch-hit in the ninth and struck out looking against closer Sergio Romo to end the game. The Rockies also werre without catcher Wilin Rosario, who hurt his left wrist while sliding during Wednesdays 8-1 win against the Chicago White Sox.dddddddddddd San Francisco played with a jumbled lineup as Bochy rested catcher Buster Posey and centre fielder Angel Pagan. There were still plenty of offensive fireworks. Gonzalez hit a two-run shot off Bumgarner in the third to put the Rockies up 3-0. The ball landed in McCovey Cove, the second time Colorados slugger has reached the waters beyond AT&T Park. Bumgarner, a right-handed batter, came a few feet shy of homering off De La Rosa (0-2) in the third and hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Crawford, who led off the inning with a triple. There was no doubt about Bumgarners drive in the fourth. He sent De La Rosas first pitch deep into the left field stands for his first home run since 2012. De La Rosa, Colorados opening day starter, failed to make it out of the fifth for the third consecutive start. He struck out six and walked two. “It looked like his command got away from him,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. “He had his A game early, then it got away from him.” Bumgarner wasnt sharp either and laboured most of the game. He threw 112 pitches and gave up four runs, ending a streak of 21 consecutive starts in which he allowed three earned runs or fewer. Colorado cut it to 6-5 on Charlie Blackmons pinch-hit single off reliever Santiago Casilla in the eighth but made two baserunning blunders. Blackmon strayed too far off second and was thrown out after Casilla made a nice play to spear Jordan Pachecos fielders choice. Pacheco then got doubled up when San Francisco centre fielder Juan Perez caught DJ LeMahieus flyball and threw to first. Romo struck out the side in the ninth for his third save. The Rockies went up 1-0 in the first when leadoff hitter Brandon Barnes singled and later scored from third while Josh Rutledge was caught trying to steal second. Rutledge started in place of Tulowitzki and went 3 for 4. NOTES: Gonzalez has five career home runs off Bumgarner, the most given up by the San Francisco lefty. … LHP Brett Anderson (0-2) pitches Saturday against San Francisco RHP Matt Cain (0-1). ’ ’ ’

INDIANAPOLIS – Jadeveon Clowney made things tougher for Johnny Manziel and the other potential No. 1 picks Monday. The former South Carolina star ran the fastest 40-yard dash time of the defensive lineman. NFL.com reported the unofficial time at 4.47 seconds. NFL Network said it was 4.53. Either way, it was still tops at his position. Clowney did 21 reps at 225 pounds in the weightlifting workout, putting him in the second half of the defensive ends. Michael Sam, who is trying to become the first openly gay player in the NFL, posted an unofficial 40-yard dash time of 4.79 seconds and did 17 reps, according to NFL.com. Col. J.G. Vermeulen said he believed Pistorius was on his stumps when he swung his bat at the brown cubicle door. The defence, on cross-examination of the policeman, insisted instead that Pistorius was wearing his prosthetic legs when hitting the door in the pre-dawn hours of Valentines Day last year — and the marks from the bat on the door were lower down because the athlete swung with a bent back. The intricate argument over whether Pistorius, the first amputee to run at the Olympics and now on trial for murder, was on his prosthetic limbs or not is important because it could match parts of his story that he accidentally shot Reeva Steenkamp. It could also show that he is lying. The athlete has said he fearfully approached the bathroom on his stumps on Feb. 14 last year and shot Steenkamp by mistake, thinking she was an intruder hiding behind the door. According to his account, he then put on his prostheses and tried to kick down the locked toilet door, and battered it with a cricket bat to get to his girlfriend after realizing what he had done. Prosecutors maintain he intentionally shot the 29-year-old model and have charged him with murder. He pleaded not guilty to all charges against him, which also include three firearm related counts. The actual door that Pistorius shot through a year ago was erected in the Pretoria courtroom Wednesday. The bat he used that night was also used in the dramatic demonstrations. And there was even a toilet cubicle behind the door, recreated to the exact specifications of the small area of Pistorius bathroom where Steenkamp was fatally shot, Vermeulen said. It included a toilet bowl. The door also had what appeared to be white tags on it and, lower down and below the handle four bullet holes were clearly visible. Pistorius shot at Steenkamp four times through the door, hitting her in the hip, arm and head. One shot missed, the court has heard. Vermeulen, who said he has 29 years experience as a forensic analyst, said it was his belief that Pistorius was on his stumps — and against what the athlete says — when he hit the door.dddddddddddd “The marks is consistent with him being in a natural position without his prostheses,” Vermeulen said. The police analyst was repeatedly asked by both the prosecution and defence to demonstrate his assertions by swinging the bat at the door. “Its quite low down on the door,” Vermeulen testified about one of the marks he said were made by the bat. He said it was “not the normal position that I would expect from a mark from a cricket bat.” Defence lawyer Barry Roux countered that Pistorius hit the door with a “bent back” and that the low marks were consistent with such a body position. Roux also made it clear that the prosecution had now retracted initial claims that Pistorius was on his prosthetics when he fired the shots that killed Steenkamp. It is now accepted, Vermeulen said, that he was probably on his stumps. That mistaken claim by prosecutors in the early part of the investigation was used by them to argue there was premeditation in the killing because they believed the disabled runner planned the killing while putting his prosthetics limbs on. Earlier, Vermeulen also said a metal panel on the wall of the main bathroom in Pistorius home had been damaged by being hit with a “hard” object, or after the object fell against it. The steel plate was new evidence. A photo of the damaged plate was shown. Prosecutors say Pistorius intentionally shot Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, after a fight. Led by questions from prosecutor Gerrie Nel, Vermeulen removed his blazer and walked down from the witness stand and over to the door to demonstrate to the judge how he believes the door was hit by Pistorius last year. Vermeulen said he was particularly interested in two specific marks on the door that he concluded were made by the bat and with the use of court photos and by kneeling down in court, Vermeulen showed the low position that the person could have been in when striking the door with the bat. Pistorius faces a possible life sentence if convicted of murder for killing Steenkamp. The judge, who watched the demonstrations Wednesday, will ultimately decide on the verdict. There is no trial by jury in South Africa. Associated Press writer Torchia reported from Johannesburg. ’ ’ ’

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Mixed martial arts fighter Cristiane Justino Santos has been suspended and fined for testing positive for steroids. Known in MMA circles as Cris Cyborg, the California State Athletic Commission fined Santos US$2,500, suspended her licence and nullified her Dec. 17 victory in San Diego against Hiroko Yamanaka. Santos said on her website she unknowingly ingested banned substances from a dietary supplement she was taking to reduce weight for the bout. “It was never my intention to obtain an unfair advantage over Hiroko,” she wrote. The CSAC did not specify in its statement the length of the suspension and its Sacramento office was closed Monday for Martin Luther King Day. The suspension was applied retroactively to Dec. 16, 2011. It has been reported to be one year in duration. Santos, a 27-year-old Brazilian, can appeal the suspension although she indicated on her website she would not. Shes also been stripped of her Strikeforce womens featherweight title. Santos won her Dec. 17 bout against Yamanaka by knockdown just 16 seconds into the first round, but the result has since been changed to a “no decision.” A drug test taken the previous day was analyzed by a World Anti-Doping Agency facility at the University of California and came back positive for stanozolol metabolites, according to CSAC. “Our primary concern is for the health and safety of fighters,” CSAC executive officer George Dodd said in the statement. “Anabolic agents and other banned substances put not only the users of those agents at risk, but their opponents as well. The commission simply will not tolerate their use.” . 31 as the deadline to submit an Olympic hockey roster, the deadline has changed. The Red Bull driver has experienced a troubled off-season, with the team severely restricted in its testing because engine supplier Renault suffered a myriad of problems trying to make the sports new six-cylinder turbo hybrid powertrain function in anything approaching a reliable fashion. While Vettel acknowledged that Mercedes will be the team to beat in this weekends season-opening race in Australia — and Red Bull will likely be off the pace in early races — he was adamant another title was within his reach, even if it was not in the imperious style of 2013 when he won the last nine races. “We are not in the best position for this race, but its a different story when you talk about the championship,” Vettel said Thursday. Vettel did not have far to look for inspiration about how to overcome early-season difficulties as he was speaking while sitting beside Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso, who found himself in a similar predicament in 2012. “Two years back Fernando was on the grid with 1.5 seconds to pole, and very close to beating us for the title at the very last race, so anything can happen,” Vettel said. “We are a strong team. We have a lot of good people on board with a lot of strong resources. We should progress as the season goes on.” Red Bull was not alone in suffering severe problems in the off-season. While the ongoing troubles are expected to particularly afflict the Renault-powered cars in the early races, all teams will be anxious heading into this Fridays practice sessions. The new computer-controlled engines must balance the poweer supply between the combustion engine, turbo charger, and the battery-stored electric power — the role of which is vastly greater than in previous years.dddddddddddd. Added to that is the need to reduce fuel use by about a third on last year to meet new rules, understand the altered aerodynamics and get used to new tires. Little wonder that F1 officials have relaxed the curfew restricting how many hours engineers and crew can spend in pit lane working on the cars. Some bleak forecasters are even predicting there will not be enough finishers on Sunday to fill the ten points positions, and race director Charlie Whiting on Thursday was asked questions about the contingency plans if no cars are running. Simple answer – the race will be stopped. While such doomsday scenarios are very unlikely, there was a strong possibility of several cars not getting within seven per cent of the pole sitters qualifying time and therefore being excluded from the race. Stewards have always had some discretion to exempt teams from that rule and Whiting said that Melbournes stewards will look upon such scenarios in Melbourne “very sympathetically.” The men considered most likely to vie for that that pole-sitting yardstick are the Mercedes pair Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg who, in contrast to most drivers, had enjoyed smooth and impressive testing sessions. The Mercedes drivers are old colleagues from their childhood days, and Hamilton said their friendship will not be tarnished if they end up fighting each other for race wins and perhaps even the championship as many expect. “It (the relationship) will be the same at the start as at the end,” Hamilton said. “We have been racing together since we were 13. This is a stronger championship but I dont see any issues.” ’ ’ ’
