MINNEAPOLIS — Mike Matheny had quite the choice for the National Leagues All-Star starter. There was his own Adam Wainwright, the St. Louis Cardinals ace with a 12-4 record and a 1.83 ERA. And there was the Los Angeles Dodgers Clayton Kershaw, 11-2 with a 1.78 ERA and fresh off a 41-inning scoreless streak that ended last week. He chose Wainwright, who will start Tuesday night at Target Field against the Seattle Mariners Felix Hernandez. “Its going to be great catching them,” said Milwaukees Jonathan Lucroy, the NL starter behind the plate. “A lot more fun than facing them.” When baseballs elite met at Citi Field last year, NL batters managed just three hits in a 3-0 loss. A year earlier in Kansas City, the AL had just six hits in an 8-0 defeat. Never before had consecutive All-Star games ended in shutouts. “Guys are throwing harder. Guys have more pitches,” said Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley, making his sixth All-Star appearance and first since 2010. The big league batting average is at a 42-year low. Strikeouts are at an all-time high. Wainwright and Kershaw are on track to become the first pair of qualifying pitchers in one league with a sub-2.00 ERA since the Mets Dwight Gooden and the Cardinals John Tudor in 1985 - the last time Minnesota hosted the All-Stars. “Aside from having the ability to win two World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals, I think this has to be one of the highlights of my baseball career to this point,” Wainwright said. “One of the coolest things I can say I did is to start a big league All-Star game.” Kershaw understood Mathenys decision. “If Im him, Im probably going to pick Adam, too. Its his guy and he had the best half,” Kershaw said. Hernandez, the first Venezuela pitcher to start for the All-Stars, also has sterling credentials: an 11-2 record with a 2.12 ERA. He described his task pretty simply: “Just throw zeroes out there and get my team to win. Thats all I got to do,” he said. Back in the great pitching era of the 1960s, the game was different. Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Bob Gibson and Juan Marichal expected to finish what they started. Now, flame-throwers come out of the bullpen in the middle of games. “Youre not getting three, four at-bats off of the starter unless youre in trouble and youre losing the game,” said Baltimores Matt Wieters, elected as a starting catcher but sidelined following elbow surgery. “I think for a while it was trying to get the starter out of the game so you can get to that fifth, sixth, seventh-inning guy. And now those fifth, sixth, seventh-inning guys are throwing upper 90s with a good breaking ball.” In addition to pitchers, the spotlight will be on New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter. The shortstop, who turned 40 last month, is playing his final season and was selected for his 14th All-Star game. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera got an emotional sendoff last year, the All-Stars giving him a solo bow. When Rivera entered in the eighth inning all other players left him the field to himself. Cal Ripken Jr. was given a tribute at the start of the 2001 game at Seattles Safeco Field when Alex Rodriguez told Ripken just before the first pitch to switch positions and move from third base to shortstop, where the Baltimore star spent most of his career. The 40-year-old Ripken then homered in the third inning. And two years ago, Atlantas Chipper Jones was feted with a standing ovation at Kauffman Stadium when he pinch hit in the sixth inning and singled. What will Jeters All-Star finale be like? “I dont go into things with expectations,” he said. “Im looking forward to playing the game. Ive pretty much stopped it right there.” The game is being played in Minneapolis for the third time, following the NLs 6-5 win at Metropolitan Stadium in 1965 and a dull 6-1 NL victory indoors at the Metrodome in 1985. Oakland, a big league-best 59-36 at the break, has seven All-Stars for the first time since 1975. It got another win on Monday night when Yoenis Cespedes beat Cincinnatis Todd Frazier 9-1 in the final round to become the first repeat champion of the Home Run Derby since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1998 and 99. The Athletics have some incentive for an AL victory in the All-Star game; since 2003, the winners league gets to start the World Series at home, and 23 of the last 28 titles were won by teams scheduled to host four of a possible seven games. “I dont think you can ever underestimate the home-field advantage in a post-season,” said AL manager John Farrell, who led Boston to a six-game win over St. Louis last year. “To have that final game potentially in your home ballpark, that goes a long way to affecting the outcome.” . — One of the byproducts of quarterback Matt McGloins rise to the top of Oaklands depth chart last week was the production of rookie tight end Mychal Rivera. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — For one night, Nick Calathes provided a big reason to believe the Memphis Grizzlies might be able to withstand the loss of Mike Conley on a short-term basis. Calathes, starting in place of the injured Conley, scored a career-high 22 points and the surging Grizzlies defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 99-90 on Saturday. “Mike must have touched (Calathes) hand or given him a good-luck touch because that man was shooting the lights out of that ball,” said Memphis reserve forward James Johnson, who had 14 points. “For him to come in and do that was huge for us. We needed that.” Zach Randolph had 23 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis, which has won a season-best six straight and 11 of 12 overall. Marc Gasol scored 19. Brandon Knight led Milwaukee with 23 points, including 18 in the second half. He also had seven assists and six rebounds. Ersan Ilyasova finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Bucks, who have lost six in a row. Khris Middleton scored 12 points, while Larry Sanders and Caron Butler finished with 10 each. Milwaukee had a lead for most of the first three quarters but it slipped away in the fourth. “In the fourth quarter, we got down by a margin of five,” Knight said. “We were able to keep it there for a little bit, and then it went to 10. From that point, it was tough to really get in a rhythm.” The Grizzlies were playing their first game without Conley, the starting point guard who sprained his ankle in Friday nights win at Minnesota. The team announced before the game that Conley will miss at least a week. Even Conley recognized the teams effort, tweeting praise to Calathes after the game with the hashtag “WinWithoutMike.” Memphis shot 56 per cent in the second half and outscored the Bucks 56-41. Calathes made all three of his shots from outside the arc. “We played 2 1/2 good quarters, we just didnt finish it,” Bucks coach Larry Drew said, later adding: “We had the energy in the first half, but in the second half we didnt, particularly in the third quarter.dddddddddddd” Calathes not only set career highs for points and minutes (40), he shot 8 of 12 in the game and 4 for 5 from 3-point range without committing a turnover. His previous high was 11 points against Houston on Jan. 25. Several of his 3-point attempts in this one were uncontested. “I think they were giving up my shot, and I made them pay for it,” Calathes said. But he also recognized the importance of not turning the ball over while trying to get the Grizzlies offence running through the frontline tandem of Gasol and Randolph. “I think that was the biggest stat of the night for me, not turning the ball over,” Calathes said. “I came into the game telling myself, Dont make a crazy play. Dont try to go overboard.” Memphis struggled early but outscored the Bucks 46-32 in the paint and outrebounded Milwaukee 48-38. The Grizzlies also went 6 of 10 beyond the arc, their best percentage in a game this season. The Bucks held a 13-point lead in the first half. Knight scored nine in the third, but Memphis began to make a push at the end of the period — even adding a point after it was over when officials reviewed a shot by Mike Miller and ruled it a 3. That left Milwaukee with a 69-67 lead entering the fourth. Memphis finally erased the deficit early in the final quarter, opening with a 16-4 rally to build its first double-digit lead of the night. Calathes sparked the burst with a trio of 3-pointers, the third one coming with 3:14 left for a 90-78 lead that Memphis never relinquished. “It is hard to play 41 minutes,” Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger said of Calathes. “He has the ball in his hands a lot. Wow, what a great performance.” NOTES: Conley missed two previous games this season with a bruised left thigh. … Bucks C Zaza Pachulia returned after missing 28 games with a broken right foot. … The Grizzlies used their 14th starting lineup of the season. ’ ’ ’

Montreal Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien dismissed any speculation of a bad relationship with P.K. Subban after his decision to bench the star defenceman for half a period in Wednesday nights 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. “Ive got a great relationship with P.K.,” Therrien told reporters after the teams practice in Brossard on Friday. “We communicate a lot. And he understands our decision (to bench him) and totally agrees.” Therrien drew plenty of criticism from fans and the local media over the last couple of days after benching Subban for about 10 minutes after he took an unnecessary roughing penalty at the end of the second period. “Were making a big story honestly that as far as Im concerned isnt such a big thing,” he said. Therrien added Friday that he had a conversation with Subban at their morning practice and that he and the reigning Norris Trophy winner were on the same page. “(Therriens) the coach and at the end of the day hes got to make decisions in the best interests of the team,” Subban told reporters after practice. “Right now weve got the best team in the world coming into our building on Saturday so thats where my focus is.” The Canadiens will host the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night. PAUL, Minn.SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — Canada fell shot of an elusive semifinal berth at the FIFA under-17 womens World Cup, but coach Bev Priestman says the Canadians showed they could compete with the best in the world. Marie Levasseur and Sarah Kinzner scored for the Canadians in a 3-2 quarter-final loss to Venezuela on Thursday. The Canadians were hoping to make history as the first Canada side to make the semifinals at the U-17 event. “They outperformed what was expected of them in a very tough group and tried to play a brand of football that were trying to develop throughout our system,” Priestman said. Deyna Castellanos, Yosneidy Zambrano and Lourdes Moreno scored for the Venezuelans at the 35,000-seat Nacional Stadium. Castellanos opened scoring in the seventh minute, before goals by Kinzner, in the 19th, and Levasseur, in the 40th, gave the Canadians a 2-1 lead. Zambrano scored the equalizer two minutes before halftime, then Moreno put Veenezuela ahead for good in the 62nd minute.dddddddddddd “The girls are obviously very disappointed at the moment, but to be fair to them Venezuela really counter-attacked to make it difficult,” Priestman said. “You attack but then you lose the ball and youve got to quickly defend.” In the preliminary round, Canada played perennial powerhouse Germany to a 2-2 draw before tying 2012 runners-up North Korea 1-1. The Canadians finished the preliminary round by toppling Ghana 2-1. Venezuela went undefeated through the opening round and hadnt conceded a goal until Kinzners. This was the youngest side Canada has fielded at the tournament. Priestman said she expects some of the players to continue to represent Canada in 2016, at either the under-17 World Cup in Jordan or the under-20 tournament in South Africa. “I expect to see quite a few of the players move up the system this summer in Canada,” she said. ’ ’ ’

Téma: Jak postupovat / Star a fresh start after his Biogenes

I have been a very proud parent this week. As someone who grew up idolizing many sports I was absolutely thrilled when my daughter came home from school and told me her class spent part of their lunch watching the Winter Olympics in the library. “Look daddy there is that girl skier I watched today,” she said pointing at our television. The skier in question hadnt won gold but shed won a spot on national television and, while enjoying her moment in the spotlight, had a huge smile for the camera. An enormous smile for a finish outside the medals. This lady had captured my daughters attention. Her happiness, so it turned out, had been infectious. I had noticed the smile immediately. I had spent my day watching hours of Premier League football and on a day where few goals were scored, even fewer smiles showed up. In fact, aside from celebrating the rare goals, none of the players smiled at all. It made me wonder; isnt anyone having any fun anymore? This had come to my attention watching Manchester Uniteds recent draw with Fulham at Old Trafford. United conceded early, spent much of the next hour camped in their opponents half, scored a goal with 12 minutes left, didnt celebrate, rushed back to restart, then scored a goal again which finally allowed everyone to smile. And laugh. And, in the case of manager David Moyes, act like theyd won the Champions League. It had all seemed a bit forced and then the smiles were well and truly wiped off their faces when Darren Bent netted a dramatic 94th minute equalizer. A few Fulham players smiled at the final whistle, others hugged each other and clapped their fans as they headed down the tunnel, no doubt turning their attention to their next match coming four days later. Welcome to Premier League football in 2014. Every team is either racing after something or trying to run away from something and while they are doing it, very few are stopping to smell the roses on the way. For some, having a plethora of teams challenge for the title, European spots, and against relegation, is seen as parity and a wonderful way for the league to have many important matches. The problem, however, are the intense demands that come with chasing 1st, 4th or 17th, for example, and they are undoubtedly weighing the players down. We are not supposed to feel sorry for a professional footballer. They earn tremendous amounts of money and for that they are supposed to be looked upon differently. However, whilst watching hours of Premier League football this month, I keep coming back to my original question – Is anyone having fun anymore? Professional sports have never been as professional. No stone is unturned and athletes are given the best of everything, but is this making them better and, just as important, are they enjoying themselves? Premier League footballers have their every move looked at, both on and off the playing field. How they train, eat, sleep, socialize, cross, pass, shoot, run, you name it, the club is looking at it. We are told it is to ensure every player is getting what they need so their employers can get the best out of them but you only have to watch Manchester United this season to know that they are not getting the best out of their players. We live in a world where every player in a game we have just watched can be analyzed in many different ways. By this rule, we can debate the merits of Tom Cleverley in midfield, the decision to play Juan Mata wide or Ashley Young at all, for example. Trained eyes can tell you how well they played. Stats available on your smart phone can tell you where they passed the ball and to whom seconds after it happens. Some statistics, if used correctly, can tell a story of how a player performed. Yet, the one thing no one will ever find a way to solve is the inability to know what is happening inside a players mind. Manchester United players this season look like the shirt is very heavy on them. They look like a team featuring players who have some serious doubts in their minds. These doubts could be anything from concerns about their form, whether their manager is good enough, or if their wife and kids are happy. Some of their teammates will not even know the real issues in their mind so the media and fans have no chance at knowing. And there is a very good chance that we will never know most of the issues. “The time to speak about many things will come,” said striker Javier Hernandez on his Instagram account this week. It is a cryptic message and time will tell what he reveals, but if and when he does so, he will be in the minority. The Premier League right now is full of players going through mental battles. Yes, they have tremendous talent with a football and show you a strong side of them when they are on the field but what of the other times? A lot of things can happen in 6,410 hours – the amount of time between the start and end of a Premier League season. Only 57 of these are spent playing 38 games of Premier League football, less than nine per cent of the time. Yet, it is this time that many of us use when analyzing these individuals. It is, of course, the time we get to know them as we welcome them inside our living rooms, but for over 91 per cent of the time, these individuals are left to be as vulnerable as you or I and wed be foolish to not think what happens during this time doesnt have a substantial impact on what they do when playing. They are over analyzed and monitored by their clubs who hire men, who usually lose their job within two years, to get the best out of them as soon as possible. The pressure from that manager leaks to the players and leaves many to do things they wouldnt normally do. This is an example of insecurities being created by the sports culture. Clubs demand success, managers demand players to play at a high level and players are told they must deliver when the pressure is on. They are bombarded with information about their style and how they can be better but some are drowning in modern day over-professionalism and are losing their love for the sport. Last November I watched closely a battle between England and Australia in cricket and was left puzzled by the poor performances of a particularly England player who consistently seemed to play poorly. That player, Jonathan Trott, would go on to leave the tour and return home with a stress related illness. He was one of the minority who got help and, because he walked away from the series, allowed the public to see what demons he was battling in his personal life. Trotts case is the extreme and it would be wrong to assume many professional footballers have gone through something similar but it would naive to deny it completely. When we study the less than nine per cent of visual evidence we have on these players it is clear that many are not enjoying themselves enough. Manchester United have no chance at winning the league but instead of the club adopting a we are in a transition phase where we are experimenting to evaluate what we need to know to get better approach, the club is starting every match like it needs to win it and the enormous pressure placed on its players means they are not expressing themselves. How much better would they be if they were told to just forget the league table and have fun? Southampton have no such demands and have shown this season what a club can do when they are free to express themselves. Sure, they too could smile more but if a league table existed for content and happiness they would be at the top. Anyone who doesnt think this leads to success should talk to the current Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. “My priority is to ensure that players feel more amateur than professional,” Scolari once said. “Thirty to forty years ago, the effort was the other way. Now there is so much professionalism, we have to revert to urging players to like the game, love it, do it with joy.” Anyone who watches Neymar often would say Scolari has so far accomplished that goal. Neymar would make a great Olympian; a true global superstar who plays with a smile. Too bad too many in the Premier League take it too seriously. Another win for modern day over-professionalism. Thankfully it isnt creeping into our childrens schools during Sochi 2014. DENVER — Aaron Brooks got word just before game time that he would start in place of an ailing Ty Lawson, and then took advantage of his opportunity. Brooks had 27 points and a career-high 17 assists to lead the Denver Nuggets past the Detroit Pistons 118-109 on Wednesday night for their fourth win in five games. “Aaron did a great job of picking those guys apart,” teammate Darrell Arthur said. “He did whatever he wanted to. He got to the rim. He got guys open for easy looks. He did a great job managing the floor today.” Brooks said he found out Lawson, who was suffering from a sinus infection, wouldnt be able to play when Lawson walked off the court and told him after struggling in pregame warm-ups. “I thought he was joking at first,” Brooks said. “I was like, Quit playing around. Get back out there. But thats what you have to do. We all stepped up.” Randy Foye added 22 points, Kenneth Faried had 14 and J.J. Hickson had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets. Wilson Chandler also sat out after receiving an injection to treat a hip injury. Greg Monroe scored 22 points to lead the Pistons, who lost their 11th in a row on the road. Rodney Stuckey added 18 and Kyle Singler and Charlie Villanueva each had 13. “Aaron Brooks was able to get in the lane and Randy Foye just caught fire from 3,” Monroe said. “Anytime you have a backcourt that ones getting to the rim and the other is knocking down 3s, its going to be tough on any night.” Trailing by seven at the half, the Nuggets rallied to take an 85-84 lead into the fourth quarter. After Singlers 3-pointer put the Pistons in front 82-75, the Nuggets outscored Detroit 10-2 over the final 3:20 of the third quarter to regain the lead. Brooks started the spurt with a 3-pointer and a driving reverse layup and Foye closed it by hitting a 3 and finishing a fast-break with a layup after stealing an inbounds pass. Denver used another 10-2 surge to stretch its lead to 104-91 midway through the final period. Detroit pulled to 113-109 with 54.2 seconds remaining as Singler and Villanueva hit 3s around a layup by Hickson. But Hickson had another layup and Anthony Randolph converted a three-point play to give the Nuggets a nine-point cushion with 31.7 seconds remaining. Stuckey scored 14 of his points in the first half, helping the Pistons take a 61-54 lead. Detroit led by as many as 11 points early on. TORONTO — Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Thursday that hes confident hell have financial flexibility should he need it later in the season. Anthopoulos, who held a media availability before his team opened a four-game series against Kansas City, was asked about an online report by columnist Peter Gammons that quoted him saying the team is “pretty much maxed out” in terms of payroll. “Were at our number to start the year,” Anthopoulos explained to reporters. “Thats fair so I dont think it varies from anything else weve ever said.” The Blue Jays, who have a payroll of about US$135 million, dont have a locked-in salary ceiling. If a situation presented itself, it appears there would be room to heighten it if needed. Toronto has been one of the surprises of the American League this season, rising to the top of the East division and taking a nine-game winning streak into Thursdays game. Talk of potential upgrades and loading up for a post-season run is already underway in the playoff-starved city even though the season is barely one-third old. Anthopoulos said while its still quite early, he does not expect to be hamstrung when it comes to finances. “I have every confidence that if we have a need come the trade deadline, which is obviously late July, I have every confidence that well have the resources to do that,” Anthopoulos said. “I dont have any doubts about that at all.” The teams purse strings were in the news last April when reports surfaced that some Toronto players discussed deferring portions of their salary to help land Ervin Santana. The free agent pitcher ended up signing with Atlanta for the same one-year US$14-million deal offered by the Jays. But Anthopoulos stressed that if something came up in the next month or two, he feels the team could take on salary if required. “We may need to be creative, we may need to do some things,” he said. “But weve been able to add payroll when needed.” One potential upgrade area is the starting rotation, which has improved significantly this season despite Brandon Morrow going on the 60-day disabled list and a variety of pitchers handling the No. 5 spot. Anthopoulos gave credit to his starters and said their performance will be key going forward. “I know the offence has been great, were hitting home runs and all that, its fun to watch,” he said. “But we will go as far as the rotation will bring us, there is no doubt about that.” The Blue Jays could get an in-house upgrade if Morrow is able to return to form. “Well have more of a report by the end of June,” Anthopoulos said. “Hes going to be back around the all-star break and by late June, he should be going out on a rehab assignment. So I think it could actually time well.” For now, Anthopoulos is focusing on preparations for next weeks draft. He expects GMs to pick up trade discussions once the selection process is complete. “Were not having any active talks at all,” Anthopoulos said. “Were really immersed in the draft right now. But I do expect once that draft is over and we get to the Monday after the draft, I think thats when everyone is going to start making the calls again.” The teams play over the next month will determine the GMs next move. But again, Anthopoulos doesnt believe money will be an issue. “I think if were in a good position at the beginning of July, well know the landscape a little bit more with what our needs are,” he said. "I have every confidence in the world that I can have that conversation with (president) Paul (Beeston), and Paul has that conversation with ownership. “But one, we need to be playing well at that time and were still very far away from that (date).” . — San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks was fined $15,570 by the NFL on Wednesday for his hit on Saints quarterback Drew Brees last Sunday. Toronto Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray took first team reps at practice on Thursday, fueling speculation that he may return to action this weekend. Ray suffered a partially torn muscle in his throwing shoulder in a game against the Calgary Stampeders in Week 9. He was expected to be out up to six weeks. “Obviously, its not 100 per cent like it would be at the beginning of the year but it feels good,” said Ray after practice. “I dont think about it when Im throwing.” The Argonauts lost their next game but then made CFL history, winning four consecutive road games with Zach Collaros at the helm. Should Ray play on Thanksgiving Day in Hamilton, it would be six weeks since he suffered the injury. “Its hard to say. This is really my first full day back in a couple months. If I can get through tomorrow and the next day, Ill have a good shot,” added Ray. However, head coach Scott Milanovich stopped short of making any confirmation that Ray would be starting on Monday. “Were going to be cautious and wait to see how he feels (tomorrow),” said Milanovich. . – The way Mark Teixeira looks at it, getting booed on the road is a badge of honour. The Oscar Pistorius murder trial is underway. On the first day of trial, Michelle Burger, a neighbour of Pistorius, took the stand and set the stage for the prosecutions case. She testified that she heard Reeva Steenkamp cry for help. “I was sitting in bed and I heard her screams,” Burger testified. “She screamed terribly and she yelled for help. I heard the screams again. It was worse. It was more intense. Just after her screams, I heard four shots. Four gun-shots… You could hear it was blood curdling screams. You cant translate it into words. The anxiousness in her voice, and fear. It leaves you cold. She screamed terribly and she yelled for help.” We know that Pistorius has admitted to killing Steenkamp. The issue being determined at trial is whether he killed her intentionally, or as Pistorius alleges, he killed her by accident. This is his version: “During the early hours of the morning I brought two fans in from the balcony. I had shortly before spoken to Reeva who was in bed beside me. Unbeknown to me, Reeva must have gone to the toilet in the bathroom at the time I brought in the fans, closed the sliding doors and drew the blinds and the curtains. I heard the bathroom window sliding open, I believed that an intruder or intruders had entered the bathroom through the bathroom window which was not fitted with burglar bars. I approached the bathroom armed with my firearm, so as to defend Reeva and I. At that time I believed Reeva was still in the bed. The discharging of my firearm was precipitated by a noise in the toilet which I, in my fearful state, knowing I was on my stumps, unable to run away or properly defend myself physically believed to be the intruder or intruders coming out of the toilet to attack Reeva and me.” So lets address some of the more important parts of the trial. Understanding the Charges The key charge against Pistorius is premeditated murder. Premeditated murder requires an intent to murder plus planning the murder. Based upon what we know, expect the prosecution to have a tough time establishing premeditated murder. As support for the charge, the prosecution will argue that the act was planned (or premeditated) since he took the time to put on his prosthetic legs before walking to the bathroom and firing four deadly shots. However, that by itself wont likely be enough to establish the requisite planning element. Premeditation is reserved for more robust planning and generally doesnt capture an intent that materialized right before a crime was committed. For those that like precedents, in the case of State v. Raath, a South African Court ruled that a father forcing his son to remove a firearm from the safe to kill the sons mother was not sufficient to constitute premeditated murder. However, that doesnt mean Pistorius walks. Not even close. Even if the prosecution cant make out premeditated murder, it can still get Pistorius on the lesser charge of murder. In order establish murder, they only need to show that he intended to kill Steenkamp (no planning element needed). Should the prosecution fail on murder, there is another lesser charge that could come into play: culpable homicide. This charge means that Pistorius negligently killed Steenkamp (or that the killing was an accident). And this is what Pistorius is alleging – he killed Steenkamp by accident. He thought she was an intruder. Prison Time Premeditated murder would get Pistorius a compulsory life sentence, while murder would result in a compulsory sentence of 15 years. For culpable homicide, the sentencing is discretionary (varies from fines to prison time), although its not unusual to see prison time in South Africa of 5-10 years for this type of crime. No Jury System & Judge Masipa South Africa does not have a jury sysstem.dddddddddddd Juries at times render unexpected or unusual decisions. They can also be swayed by public sentiment and emotion, while also potentially distracted by celebrity and irrelevant facts. A judge, however, is more likely to focus on the facts and make a ruling based upon those facts. The judge is charged with ensuring a just result and on that basis, will carefully review and consider all the facts of a case. Judge Thokozile Masipa is presiding over the trial. Masipa has a reputation for being tough on cases that involve crimes against women. In May 2013, Masipa ordered serial rapist Shepherd Moyo to serve a jail sentence of 252 year sentence. She hoped the sentence would serve as a “deterrent.” Given her intolerance for violence against women, Judge Masipa is perhaps not the ideal judge for Pistorius. South Africa, by the way, has the highest reported rate globally of females murdered by shooting in a country not engaged in war. Thats another reason this case matters. The Case The trial has only just begun. More witnesses will testify and further evidence will be presented. So its tough to know how this will end for Pistorius. Still, there are a number of improbabilities with Pistorius version of the events. How did he not know Steenkamp was not in bed when he walked right by her? Wouldnt Steenkamp have yelled in the bathroom after the first shot was discharged? As well, witnesses have reported seeing the lights on, contradicting Pistorius account that it was pitch dark in his room. As well, Steenkamps wounds suggest she was not sitting on toilet on left hand side of bathroom but rather on right side of bathroom. This suggests she was hiding from Pistorius. Also key is whether Pistorius and Steenkamp argued that night. The prosecution has already produced witnesses who testified that they heard shouting and screaming. This helps the prosecutions argument that this was a quarrel that tragically escalated to murder. As well, the couples mobile phone records could provide helpful insight as to what happened that night. Steenkamp is said to have had her phone with her in the bathroom when she was shot. Was she contacting the authorities or friends for help as an enraged Pistorius charged toward her? It is unusual for someone to take their phone to the bathroom in the middle of the night (unless they feel threatened) and the prosecution will undoubtedly raise that. There is more. Pistorius told authorities he could not remember the password to his own cell phone. As a result, authorities took the phone to Apple headquarters to have it unlocked. This raises the possibility that Pistorius may have been hiding incriminating messages. Forensic evidence will also be presented, which can be quite effective in piecing together what really happened that night. For example, each drop of blood in the bathroom can help determine if Steenkamp was sitting, standing or moving at the time she was shot. Pistorius rage issues will also come into play. As for the defence, they will argue that the shooting was a tragic mistake – but a mistake nonetheless. They will also focus on contradictions and inconsistencies in statements made by witnesses to police and their answers in court. In fact they have started challenging witnesses, attacking not only their recollection of events, but also the plausibility of their claims that they could hear the couple argue from their homes. Pistorius claims lack believability and veracity. Ultimately, it would not be a surprise to see Pistorius convicted of murder and sentenced to 15 years in jail, particularly with a Judge like Masipa presiding over the trial. That being said, there is still a lot of track to cover and much evidence to consider. Still, Pistorius is facing an uphill battle. ’ ’ ’

In total the Predators directed 75 shots at the Jets net, with the Jets blocking 20, and another 15 missing the net. Trouba again led the Jets in ice time at 25:06, Bryan Little was again their best face-off man at 63 per cent, winning 12 of 19. Stuart had five blocked shots. ’ ’ ’

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Juan Agudelo scored midway through the first half and the New England Revolution beat the Columbus Crew 1-0 on Sunday to qualify for the post-season for the first time since 2009. The Revolution (14-11-9) needed to win their regular-season finale because Houston defeated D.C. United earlier in the day to also reach 51 points. New England moved from sixth in the Eastern Conference, one spot out of the playoffs, to third because it owns the tiebreaker against Houston. New England finished the season with a 4-0-2 stretch and will take on Sporting Kansas City in the first round of the playoffs next weekend. “Its a credit all our guys because it wasnt the prettiest game,” Revolution coach Jay Heaps said. “They showed a lot more heart than any game Ive seen because there were situations we had to fight and dig in deep. We lost the possession battle but every other battle I felt we won.” Agudelo completed a crafty give-and-go with Lee Nguyen on the right side of the box and put away his ninth goal from 12 yards in the 28th minute. The Crew (12-17-5) dropped their second straight game. “There was no rhythm to the game unfortunately,” Crew interim coach Brian Bliss said. “That was their game plan. It worked.” The Crew had a large portion of the possession to that point but a quick counterattack set the stage for New England to take the lead, thanks to the passing of Nguyen, who returned after serving a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation. “Having that week off I was fresh,” Nguyen said. “I wanted to contribute as much as I could. Everybody worked so hard to make it happen.” Agudelo has seven goals and one assist in 14 games since being acquired from Chivas USA on May 7. He was proud of how the Revolution was able to preserve the lead. “Its something weve been doing the last couple of games,” he said. “We were confident but not too confident. The Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs are no strangers to the NBA Finals. The Heat are returning to the championship for a fourth consecutive year while the Spurs are making their sixth trip since 1999, including last years matchup with the Heat. Both clubs are filled with All-Stars and future Hall of Famers. With so much talent and experience on the court, picking a winner isnt an easy thing to do. The question is, which player in the NBA Finals is most important to their teams success? Who needs to be on top of their game for their team to have a shot at the Larry OBrien Trophy? Lets start off with the Miami Heat. The obvious choice is LeBron James. The player widely regarded as the best in the world is a game-changer in every sense of the word. Hes taken home the Finals MVP the past two championship seasons for the Heat and is in the prime of his career. In Game 7 against the Spurs last year, James racked up 37 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Not a bad performance for the biggest stage an NBA player could ever play on. If James is on his game, or close to it, are the Heat a lock to capture their third consecutive championship? Dwyane Wade played the 2013 Finals with a bad left knee and was still able to contribute to the teams success. Now in 2014, the 32-year-old has a clean bill of health (for his standards) and is ready to compete for his fourth title in a Miami uniform. Wade is averaging 18.7 points and close to 20 minutes of play per game throughout these playoffs. The knee doesnt seem to be an issue. Wades leadership and secondary scoring behind James may be integral to Miamis chances. The third wheel when it comes to the Miami Heat is Chris Bosh. The 30-year-old Dallas native doesnt seem to get the same respect as his fellow Heat All-Stars. But, the reality is, Bosh is a good player. The Heat probably wouldnt have been as dominant as theyve been over the past few seasons if Bosh had stayed with the Toronto Raptors. Does Bosh need to continue being effective for the Heat to be at the top of their game as a group? The Spurs have their share of talented players as well. The ageless Tim Duncan will be vying for his fifth championship with San Antonio. Even as a 38-year-old in his 17th season in the NBA, Duncan hasnt missed a step in these playoffs, averaging close to a double-double. Will Duncans leadership and flawless fundamentals on the court be the difference-maker in a Spurs series victory? Last year it was Wade hobbled with an injury in the Finals, now its Spurs point guard Tony Parker stricken with the bug. Parker is dealing with a lingering left ankle problem that forced him to miss the second half of Game 6 against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Finals. Hes expected to play in Game 1. Even with the wonky ankle, the 32-year-old is leading the team in points (17.2) and assists (5.7) this post-season. If Parker can stay healthy enough to contribute on the court, San Antonio might be able to figure out Miami. Manu Ginobili is arguably the most reliable bench player in the Association and is a major key to the Spurs success. If San Antonio is going to beat Miami, will Ginobili be a major reason why? And then there is Gregg Popovich. The four-time NBA champion and three-time Coach of the Year (including this season) knows the game like the back of his hand. Will his fiery intensity be enough to help dethrone the Heat? So there you have it, the main characters of the 2014 NBA Finals. It was a great seven-game series last June and theres no reason the same wont happen this time around. With these teams being so evenly matched, its hard to predict a winner and one player could be the difference. So, which player is most important to their team winning the Larry OBrien Trophy? As always, its Your! Call. . When a few shots broke through that defensive front, Jonathan Quick was there. JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Lee Westwood is trying as hard as ever to win a major, the missing piece to what has turned into a stellar career. His goal at the PGA Championship is not to try so hard. “Ive done all the hard work now, done it for 20 years,” Westwood said Tuesday. “Its time to relax and let it flow.” He comes to Atlanta Athletic Club at No. 2 in the world behind Luke Donald. Not many would dispute that Westwood is No. 1 when it comes to wearing the label as best to have never won a major. “Its good to be the best at something, I suppose,” he said. Westwood had putts on the final hole of the 2008 U.S. Open and 2009 British Open to get into a playoff. He had the lead going into the final round of the 2010 Masters. The attention on Westwood without a major only got greater when his best friend, Darren Clarke, won the British Open last month at Royal St. Georges. That makes four of the last five majors for players who are represented by Chubby Chandler at International Sports Management. Who could have believed that group would not include Westwood? Westwood said he would treat this week just like any other, no matter the size of the Wanamaker Trophy. “Its four rounds of golf, same as the Indonesian Masters,” Westwood said, alluding to the Asian Tour event he won in May to briefly return to No. 1 in the world. Now, he appears to be paying attention to what is working for his stable mates. Westwood recently started working on his putting with Dave Stockton, the two-time PGA champion considered to be among the best when it comes to teaching the most important part of the game. More surprising is that Westwood, who has been suspicious of what sports psychologists have to offer, is now spending time with Bob Rotella. Rory McIlroy started working with Stockton in May, a month before his record-setting win in the U.S. Open at Congressional. Clarke, who had fallen out of the top 100 in the world, began working again with Rotella before the British Open. Might it work for Westwood? “Ive ticked pretty much every other box, and its got me to a very high level,” Westwood said. “To get to No. 1 in the world (he has been there longer than anyone this year), you have to be doing most things right. Putting would be the top of the priority list with regard to room for improvement.” Stocktons advice on putting mirrors the attitude that Westwood is taking into the PGA Championship, the final major of the year that starts Thursday. Its also one that has worked so many years for Brad Faxon, regarded as among the best. Putt like you dont care. “Youll see a routine that Im comfortable with,” Westwood said. “But youll see me not trying.” As for the mental side? “Lee is trying to get the best out of himself that he possibly can,” Clarke said. “And obviously, with people — especially from the same stable — winning majors all around him, its an avenue he has not explored in the past. And certainly working with Dr. Bob cant do any harm.” Westwood wanted to be more lighthearted this week, and that much became clear almost immediately. He was introduced in his press conference as No. 2 in the world, playing in his 14th PGA Championship, having tied for third in the PGA two years ago and tying for 44th at Atlanta Athletic Club in 2001. “I made the cut?” Westwood said. “Check on that. Lets have a look. I dont think I made any cuts in 2001.” He had the moderator, Kelly Elbin, get out the PGA record book and thumb back 10 years. Sure enough, Westwood tied for 44th, with a pair of 68s in the middle rounds. Westwood then looked up at the audience and spoke like he knew it all along. “I played nicely in 2001 and shot a couple of 68s, really loved the course and happy to be back,” he said. Talking about his fitness routine, which relies on powerlifting, Westwood said he recently deadlifted 354 pounds. “A Chubby and a quarter,” he said, referring to his burly agent. And what about Chandler going for a Grand Slam? The question referred to his clients winning the Masters (Charl Schwartzel), U.S. Open (McIlroy) and British Open (Clarke). Westwood jokingly went literal with it. “Im not impressed with his preparation,” he said. “He doesnt function well in the heat. He drinks a lot, but not water, unless you count tonic water.” Westwood, of course, is not the only player desperate to win a major. Now that Tiger Woods has been in a slump, on and off the golf course, the majors have been more open to all. Twelve players have won the last 12 majors. There hasnt been a streak that long in seven years. So open is golf at the moment that only six of the top 20 players in the world have won majors. Jason Day was a runner-up in the first two majors. Adam Scott is coming off a World Golf Championship, his confidence boosted by having Woods ex-caddie, and by a long putter that has done wonders for the one weakness in his game. Dustin Johnson was a runner-up at Royal St. Georges, and he looks talented enough to have won three majors by now. He blew the U.S. Open last year with an 82 in the last round, and was knocked out of a playoff at the PGA Championship when he didnt realize he was in a bunker at Whistling Straits. But if anyone should expect to contend this week, it starts at the top — not just Westwood, but Donald. After a tie for fourth in the Masters, Donald has vanished in the other two majors this summer. Even so, his golf remains at such a high level that his lead atop the ranking is increasing. With a runner-up finish last week at a World Golf Championship, he became the first person since Woods more than a year ago whose ranking average was higher than 10. He understands what Westwood is feeling, because Donald feels it himself. They are the only two players to be No. 1 in the world without ever having won a major. “Theres more pressure,” Donald said. “You feel a little more uptight, and sometimes its harder to let it go and just kind of play the way you know how to play. But its very hard. Theres a hard balance between not trying and obviously putting in some effort to give it your best.” . Brooks and Harrison, along with tackle Walter Jones and coach Tony Dungy, were the first-year eligible candidates to make the cut from 126 to 25. Sabathia did not get a decision on Monday against Tampa Bay, as he allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings. Hes 13-4 on the year to go along with a 3.42 ERA. . The All-Star point guard, sidelined for the past six months with a knee injury, was set to return to the Oklahoma City Thunder lineup for Sunday nights home game against the Phoenix Suns, weeks earlier than expected. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Cam Newton wasnt flawless on Sunday. He didnt need to be. Newton threw for one touchdown and ran for another to overcome a shaky start, the defence intercepted Matt Ryan three times and the Carolina Panthers beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-10 for their fourth straight victory. Offensive tackle Jordan Gross was more impressed with Newton on Sunday than in the previous three games in which the third-year quarterback played near-perfect ball. “There were times today where he could have gotten rattled,” Gross said. “He took some shots and had some turnovers, but he didnt (get rattled). He kept on swinging.” Newton entered on quite a streak, completing 77 per cent of his passes with eight touchdowns — six passing and two rushing — and no turnovers in his previous three games. But he had two first half interceptions and wasnt sharp on his deep balls, regularly overthrowing his receivers. “He got a little carried away early on and tried to make things happen,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “The ball sailed a little bit on him today and when hes doing that its because hes anxious. Hes excited. He wants to do well. Its unfortunate that he didnt bring the ball down a little bit because there were some big plays left out there.” Still, Newton bounced back to throw for 249 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Greg Olsen, and also scored on an 8-yard run. Newton called his play “unacceptable.” “I didnt put my best foot forward in the first half,” he said. But his teammates were quick to back him up. “Everybody gets wrapped up in stats and quarterback ratings and yards per catch or whatever,” Olsen said. “At the end of the day, when you go out and you win 34-10 and you are the quarterback — you did your job.” The Panthers (5-3) pulled within a game of the New Orleans Saints, who lost to the New York Jets. Fullback Mike Tolbert scored his fifth touchdown in the last four games on a 4-yard burst and cornerback Drayton Florence intercepted Ryan and returned it 38 yards for a score to seal the win. At 2-6, the Falcons post-season hopes are fading fast. The Falcons continued to struggle without Julio Jones and Roddy White. Tony Gonzalez had six catches for 81 yards and a touchdown but the running game continues to struggle as Steven Jackson and company were held to a combined 78 yards on the ground. The Panthers defence limited Ryan to 219 yards and forced four turnovers — three interceptions.dddddddddddd “I know Matt. Hes going to look at this film. Hes going to obsess over it,” Gonzalez said. “I have no doubt hes going to bounce back.” The Panthers got a huge break early in the fourth quarter. Leading 17-10, Carolinas Brandon LaFell broke free in Atlanta territory for a big gain but had the ball punched out from behind by cornerback Asante Samuel. The Falcons had a chance to recover, but the ball bounced right back into LaFells arms while he was on the ground. Newton scored on an 8-yard run on the next play to give Carolina a 24-10 lead with nine minutes remaining. “When youre winning, things happen in your favour,” LaFell said. “With all of the bad luck around here last year, that thing would have been lost. We got the luck of the bounce.” The Panthers put the game away on the next possession when Florence stepped in front of Ryans pass in the flat and returned it for the score — the first “pick 6” allowed by the Falcons since 2010, a span of 47 games. “If you play sports long enough, there will be ups and downs, and waves throughout that,” Ryan said. “Ive played poorly before, but its about trying to stop that at one, and moving on. I wasnt able to do that.” Carolina led 14-10 at halftime despite the two interceptions by Newton. Newtons 13-quarter streak of turnover-free football ended when he went long for Ted Ginn Jr. and was intercepted by Desmond Trufant in the second quarter. Newton turned it over again in the final seconds of the first half on an interception by rookie Robert Alford in the back of the end zone, ending a golden scoring opportunity. Atlantas only touchdown of the game came when Ryan hooked up on a 17-yard strike with Gonzalez in the back of the end zone. The Falcons might have had more, but Steven Jacksons 2-yard touchdown run was nullified on a holding penalty on lineman Garrett Reynolds forcing the Falcons to settle for a Matt Bryant field goal. NOTES: The Panthers lost starting right guard Chris Scott and backup Jeff Byers to injuries on Sunday, forcing them to use former defensive tackle Nate Chandler at that spot. … The Panthers have led at halftime in all eight games this season. … Jonathan Stewart had 43 yards rushing on nine carries and 22 yards receiving on three catches in his first game this season for the Panthers. ’ ’ ’

NEW YORK — If Martin St. Louis wasnt a fan favourite during his first two months with the New York Rangers, he certainly became one during a very emotional weekend. St. Louis came to New York in March in a deal in which popular team captain Ryan Callahan was shipped to Tampa Bay. When he didnt light up the scoreboard right away, the Madison Square Garden crowd was slow to warm to him. That all changed Sunday night. Three days after the sudden death of his mother, St. Louis scored 3:34 in, and the Rangers avoided elimination for the second straight game by beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1. Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series is Tuesday in Pittsburgh. New York advanced in the first round with a Game 7 win over Philadelphia. St. Louis rejoined his teammates for Game 5 in Pittsburgh on Friday, after a quick trip to Montreal to be with his family. That dedication inspired his teammates during a 5-1 win and carried over to Sunday. “Its probably one of the cooler things Ive been a part of in my professional career,” said Derek Stepan, who earned the first assist on St. Louis goal. “The emotion on that goal is something that I will never forget.” Fans were already chanting “Mar-ty, Mar-ty” on his first shift. The cheers got louder after he scored. St. Louis, the first star of the game, patted his heart when he came out to an ovation from the crowd. “Mothers Day, my dad is here, my sister is here,” St. Louis said. “Its been a tough time for my whole family. To be able to get the lead in the first period, it was a good one.” But not the prettiest of goals. St. Louis got in good position in front of the net. Stepan swiped at the puck in traffic and knocked it off St. Louis right leg and into the net. “I got a pretty good bounce,” St. Louis said. “I know (my mother) helped me through this. Its a great win by the guys.” Carl Hagelin pushed the Rangers lead to 2-0 just 2:51 later, and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 36 shots to keep Pittsburgh at bay. Derick Brassard made it 3-1 in the second period. Brandon Sutter scored the lone goal for the Penguins, who got 26 saves from Marc-Andre Fleury. The Penguins, who led the series 3-1, failed in their first attempt to advance to the Eastern Conference finals with a 5-1 home loss on Friday. Now the pressure has shifted to them, and frustration is showing. Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby took a penalty at the end of the second period that gave the Rangers a power play to start the third. Several scrums also broke out — including one after the final buzzer. “With a minute left in the game, emotions run high,” Crosby said. “I dont think thats why we lost. We put ourselves in a bad position early. We fought hard and tried to get back, but you cant continue to do that in the playoffs. You cant start like that.” The team that has scored first has won every game. Under coach Dan Bylsma, the Penguins are 1-7 at home when having a chance to clinch a series. Overall, the Penguins are 2-6 in Game 7s in Pittsburgh. On the flip side, the Rangers are 9-2 in their past 11 games when facing elimination, dating to Game 6 of the first round in 2012 at Ottawa. New York has never won a series it trailed 3-1 and has never beaten the Penguins in the playoffs. Buoyed by another early lead, the Rangers pressed for more, and got it on Hagelins unassisted goal at 6:25. Hagelins initial shot attempt from the left-wing boards was blocked by defenceman Rob Scuderi. Hagelin got to the loose puck in the centre of the left circle and sent a hard backhand sailing past Fleury for his fourth of the post-season. Bylsma burned his lone timeout to try to calm his team that was being outshot 7-2. Pittsburgh reversed that trend and cut its deficit in half before the end of the first. The Penguins started to gain momentum after they killed a roughing penalty against Jussi Jokinen and then received their first power play after Chris Kreider knocked down Jokinen at the edge of the crease with 8:40 left in the period. New York had built its shots edge to 12-3, but then helped the Penguins make the score 2-1. Sutter flung the puck toward the net, and it appeared to hit Rangers defenceman John Moore and then bounce in off the foot of defenceman Kevin Klein near the left post with 3:04 left. Lundqvist was clearly agitated by the late goal by Pittsburgh, which led 15-14 in shots in the first period. The teams both had chances in the middle period, and neither could connect on a pair of power plays. Pittsburgh twice challenged Lundqvist with short-handed breakaways, and the Rangers had a goal waved off at 5:55 when Kreider was called for goalie interference after he was shoved from behind into Fleury by Kris Letang. The Rangers made it 3-1 with 4:30 remaining in the period — 25 seconds after Mats Zuccarello finished serving a tripping penalty. Brassard lunged, knocked the puck out of the air, and scored his third goal in two games and fourth in the series. Benoit Pouliot earned an assist, giving the line of Pouliot, Brassard, and Zuccarello 12 goals and 15 assists in 10 games — regular season and playoffs — against Pittsburgh. NOTES: The Penguins dropped to 9-3 at the Garden in the playoffs and 15-15 overall in Game 6s. … Lundqvist made his 79th consecutive playoff start, tying Fleury for third place on the NHL list among goalies with one team. … The Rangers were 0 for 6 on the power play. The goals took Liverpools tally in the Premier League this season to 70, overtaking Manchester City as the top scorers, and left the fourth-place team just four points behind league leader Chelsea. However, manager Brendan Rodgers refused to be drawn on Liverpools title hopes. “I think for us, were concentrating on our performance,” Rodgers said. “Were just concentrating on winning games. No one is really talking about us for the title anyway. Everything now is about Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.” Sturridges first came in the third minute when he received a through ball from Raheem Sterling before rounding Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm and firing into an open goal. The striker then provided the assist for Henderson to double Liverpools lead in the 20th from the edge of the area. Jonjo Shelvey pulled one back for Swansea against his former club three minutes later with a long-range strike that went in off the crossbar. He held his arm up in apology to his former club, a gesture that received applause from the Liverpool fans. But the home supporters were shocked into silence soon after when Wilfried Bony equalized in the 27th minute, with his header from Jonathaan De Guzmans free kick taking a slight deflection off Martin Skrtel.dddddddddddd Sturridge gave Liverpool a 3-2 lead at halftime when he headed in from close range after a Luis Suarez cross had found him unmarked. Swansea levelled soon after the interval though when Bony scored a penalty after being fouled by Skrtel. Suarez went close to restoring Liverpools lead but Vorm saved well when one-on-one with the striker before De Guzman nearly gave Swansea the lead when he shot just wide from a free kick. Henderson struck the winner after receiving a pass from Suarez. His initial shot was parried by Vorm but the England forward reacted quickest to poke the ball in from close range. Despite the victory, Rodgers is hoping to see an improved defensive display against Southampton next weekend. “At 2-0, we should manage the game better,” Rodgers said. “We are obviously very disappointed with the goals we conceded.” Swansea manager Garry Monk tried to take the positives out of the defeat. “I cant complain about the effort from my players,” Monk said. “Going forward, I think its a confidence boost to them that they can come to somewhere like this – where a lot of people thought they would wipe the floor with us, the way theyve been dismantling teams here – and we were in the game right up until the final whistle.” ’ ’ ’

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Every time that Towson missed a shot, it seemed as if somebody from Kansas was there to corral the rebound, throw an outlet pass and start the Jayhawks on the fast break. Usually it ended up with a dunk. Andrew Wiggins of Vaughan, Ont., and the high-flying Jayhawks put together a highlight reel in the first half Friday night, rolling to a big lead over the overmatched Tigers. The nations No. 2 team cruised in the second half to an 88-58 win in its opening game of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. “When were playing our game, no one can stop us,” said Wiggins, the star freshman who led the Jayhawks (4-0) with 16 points. “When we play in the flow of the game, no one can stop us. We have too many tools to use. When were playing like we did today, nobody can stop us.” Andrew White III finished with 13 points, Wayne Selden added 12 and Perry Ellis had 10 for the Jayhawks, who used a 22-2 run to take a 49-16 lead by halftime. From there, they might as well have started to look ahead to their game against Wake Forest in the Bahamas on Thanksgiving Day. The Jayhawks are scheduled for three games in the rest of the Battle 4 Atlantis. “Hopefully this will be a good stretch for us to start putting some stuff together,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “Were making steps in the right direction.” Jerrelle Benimon had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Towson (3-2), the favourite in the Colonial Athletic Association. Rafriel Guthrie scored 15 points off the bench. “Theyre deep, theyre athletic, and unfortunately for us, they were locked in,” Towson coach Pat Skerry said with a shake of his head. “If theres a better team in the country, Id like to find out who they are, and I certainly dont want to play them.” After stumbling a bit out of the gate, the uber-athletic Jayhawks reeled off 11 straight points to seize control. Six of the points came on rim-rattling dunks, two of those by Tarik Black. Towson quickly became rattled and started to settle for a cacophony of quick 3-pointers, ill-advised shots in the paint and tightly contested jumpers. All of its misses only served to fuel the Kansas fast break, which piled up 22 points in the first 20 minutes. “All of them run,” Benimon said. “They just get up and down.” The Tigers were still within 27-14 with 7:42 left in the half, but they only managed one field goal from there as Kansas used a 22-2 finishing flurry to blow the game open. Wiggins scored nine of his 14 first-half points during the run, and was involved in both of the highlights. The first came after a miss by the Tigers Timajh Parker-Rivera. The ball ended up with Frank Mason, whose pretty one-bounce, cross-court pass to Wiggins resulted in an easy dunk. The second highlight came after Mike Burwell missed and Mason again got the ball in the open court. He fed it to fellow freshman Conner Frankamp who, rather than take a mildly contested layup, added one extra pass like a seasoned veteran that Wiggins slammed with two hands. By the time White was fouled in transition and made the second of two free throws with 1.4 seconds left on the clock, the Jayhawks had built their huge halftime advantage. Kansas wound up shooting 69 per cent from the field over the opening 20 minutes, had a 23-11 advantage on the boards and outscored the smaller Tigers 26-10 in the paint. Towson shot 20.7 per cent from the field and missed all 10 of its 3-point tries. The Jayhawks didnt slow down much in the second half, racing up and down the court like it was a YMCA pickup game. Black had another big dunk during one stretch, Frankamp curled in a 3 and Kansas coasted to its 66th consecutive non-conference win at Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks wont return to the friendly confines of the Phog for close to a month. After the Bahamas, they visit Colorado and Florida along with playing New Mexico at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. They return home to play Georgetown on Dec. 21. “I think potentially we could be one of the better teams, no question,” Self said. “I think by the end if our young kids get better, we have a chance to be in the conversation. … Theres a lot of nice teams out there but certainly when we play with energy we can be one of the better ones.” . TAMPA, Fla. — Josh Freeman pushed his way into the end zone, scrambled to his feet and flapped his arms in celebration of the first rushing touchdown of his career. The little bird dance seemed uncharacteristic for Tampa Bays usually unflappable 23-year-old quarterback. It also spoke to how much beating the Atlanta Falcons means to a young Buccaneers team that ended three years of frustration against their NFC South rivals with a 16-13 victory on Sunday. Tampa Bays defence forced three turnovers and sacked Matt Ryan four times in its best performance of the season. Freemans 1-yard sneak snapped a 3-3 tie in the second quarter and Connor Barth kicked three field goals as the Bucs (2-1) stopped a five-game losing streak in the series. Four of those losses were by six or fewer points. “Its huge, and its about time one went our way. Theyve been really close games since Ive been here,” the third-year pro said. “Theyre a great divisional opponent. Ive got a lot of respect for those guys, offence and defence. Theyre a good team. Well get to see them again. Im looking forward to that, but today was our day. We got it done.” As good as it felt, though, dont try to tell the NFLs youngest team that it has arrived. “I just told the team we didnt come into the season to beat the Atlanta Falcons. We came into this season to win the division. They just happen to be a team thats in our division,” Bucs coach Raheem Morris said. “Weve got to beat those guys just like weve got to beat everybody else in our division and try to win this thing so we can go to the playoffs, and then compete for a championship.” Tampa Bay won 10 games a year ago, but lost twice to the Falcons with both games being decided in the closing minutes. When his players convened for training camp, Morris delivered a simple message: The goal this year is to win the NFC South, regardless of how many wins it takes. That will ensure a post-season berth. The Bucs forced two first-half fumbles with sacks. Ronde Barber intercepted a pass to stop an Atlanta threat just before halftime, and the Falcons (1-2) were stopped on downs inside the Bucs 10 early in the fourth quarter. Still, Ryan nearly pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback from a double-digit deficit for the second straight week. The Falcons drew within 16-13 on the 91st TD reception of Tony Gonzalezs career with just under 10 minutes to go. They drove to the Tampa Bay five-yard line before Matt Bryants 33-yard field goal made it a three-point game with 4:06 left. Ryan and his supporting cast of playmakers never got the ball back. With Freeman and LeGarrette Blount, who rushed for 81 yards on 24 carries, leading the way, the Bucs burned the rest of the clock. Any hope the Falcons had evaporated as Tampa Bay converted a final first down when Atlantas Corey Peters jumped offside on fourth-and-inches when the Bucs did not plan to snap the ball. “It was a freeze play. They were going to use a hard count,” Atlanta coach Mike Smith said. “We talked about it on the sideline. We didnt execute as an entire defence. Not one person (should be singled out). That one play didnt determine the game. There were lots of plays. We just didnt get it done.” Peters took responsibility. “It was stupid. It was my fault. I take 100 per cent of the blame for that,” Peters said. “We went over it over and over again.” Ryan, who overcame a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat Philadelphia 35-31 the previous week, completed 26 of 47 passes for 330 yards and one touchdown. The Bucs turned one of his two fumbles inside the Atlanta 20 into a field goal, and their last sack reduced the Falcons options after their drive reached the Tampa Bay five. Roddy White had nine receptions for 140 yards for Atlanta. Rookie Julio Jones had six catches for 115 yards, including a 49-yarder that set up Ryans 10-yard TD pass to Gonzalez, who tied Isaac Bruce for ninth on the NFL career TD reception list. Atlantas running game was nonexistent with Michael Turner, who had been averaging nearly seven yards a carry, being limited to 20 yards on 11 attempts. “Were not executing in order to be successful. Its not just in one phase. Its across the board,” Smith said. The Falcons have trailed by double-digits in all three of their games. “We have not started fast. We have not gotten out of the chute like we want,” Smith said. "Every coach in this league talks about starting fast. One of the things you have to do. We havent done it to this point. Theyre fighting hard and they have resolve. But weve got to start faster. Freeman completed 22 of 32 passes for 180 yards with two interceptions. He rushed for 35 yards on 10 attempts. Both quarterbacks began the game with turnovers on their teams first possession. Freemans end zone interception cost the Bucs a chance to take a quick lead after Dekoda Watson, starting in place of injured linebacker Quincy Black, sacked Ryan to force the fumble Barber recovered at the Falcons 17. Freeman threw six interceptions all last season. Hes already thrown four this year, including ill-advised throws to the middle of the end zone each of the past two games. NEW YORK — Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello will be sidelined for a while because of the fracture he sustained in his left hand while playing for Norway in the Sochi Olympics. Zuccarello was evaluated back in New York, and diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture — an injury that typically takes 3 to 4 weeks to heal — the Rangers said Friday. The 26-year-old Zuccarello, New Yorks leading scorer this season with 43 points, will miss a week of practice time before the Rangers play Chicago on Thursday in their first game following the NHLs Olympic break. He could be back in action during the second week of March. New York has nine games scheduled between Thursday and March 14. Zuccarello is tied for second on the team with 15 goals and he leads with 28 assists. Rangers defenceman Marc Staal also missed practice on Friday because of back spasms. Since leaving the Los Angeles Galaxy in December, and retiring from the game after a subsequent five-month stint at Paris Saint-Germain, Beckham has been mulling over the location for his MLS franchise. Beckham has now made up his mind and he would pay a discounted rate of $25 million to start an MLS expansion team in Miami, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because plans for the team arent being publicly discussed yet. The option of becoming a team owner was included in the MLS contract Beckham signed when joining the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007. “We know that Miami is one of the most passionate soccer markets in North America,” MLS Executive Vice-President Dan Courtemanche told the AP. “We have met with David Beckham regarding ownership of an expansion team, and we look forward to David one day owning an MLS club.” There are currently 19 MLS teams, and league commissioner Don Garber hopes to expand to 24 teams by the 2020 season. A 20th team is already in place to begin playing in 2015 after Premier League club Manchester City and its partner, the New York Yankees, paid an expansion fee of $100 million to launch New York City FC. The MLS still has to give Beckham the go-ahead to make Miami the location of the franchise. Beckham is looking to raise several hundred mmillion dollars of investment to fund the setup costs, including putting together the squad of players and building a stadium.dddddddddddd Beckhams business partner Simon Fuller, the “American Idol” creator who is the driving force in franchise negotiations, will be a significant shareholder, the person familiar with the situation said. Beckham is looking to sell stakes in the team to other investors, and has already had expressions of interest from businessmen globally. Beckham hopes the team to debut in three years, which would probably require the franchise to initially play in an existing venue. In June, Beckham toured the Sun Life and Florida International University stadiums and met with Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez. University officials delivered a presentation to Beckham and Marcelo Claure, president and CEO of Brightstar Corp. and a member of the FIU Board of Trustees, explaining the draw of a professional team in Miami. Before deciding on Miami as the franchise location, Beckham explored options in other cities, including Montreal, San Diego and Orlando, the person said. Miami has had a Major League Soccer team before. The Miami Fusion held matches in Fort Lauderdale from 1998 to 2001, before shutting down because of poor attendance. As a former Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan midfielder, Beckham hopes his star power will make a team work there. Beckhams management team said it is not ready yet to make an announcement about Beckhams franchise ownership option. ’ ’ ’

This week, collegiate players from across Canada participated in three regional combines in Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto. Those who impressed in each of the three events were asked to attend the main CFL Combine which begins Friday in Toronto. TSNs Duane Forde gives his thoughts on this weeks regionals, who impressed and who to look out for in Toronto this weekend. EDMONTON – Twenty-one draft eligible players participated in Mondays Edmonton regional combine with five of them advancing to the national combine in Toronto. The most impressive among them was Simon Fraser receiver Tore Corrado. Having established himself more as a kick returner than as a receiver at the NCAA Division II-level, Corrados quickness is his greatest strength. His skill set gives him an opportunity to be an effective player on the bigger Canadian field. Corrados SFU teammate Dylan Roper turned scouts heads early in the day when he hoisted 225 lbs. 26 times. The defensive end clinched his trip to Toronto in the one-on-one drills, where his quickness off the edge and non-stop motor were evident. The Regina Rams also had two players promoted to the main combine in guard Kyle Paterson and defensive end Michael Dadzie. The latter hails from the athletic hotbed of Brampton, Ontario and, although he wasnt a full-time starter for the Rams, he possesses a combination of strength and speed that intrigues scouts. Paterson hopes to continue following in the footsteps of fellow Weyburn, Saskatchewan natives and U of R products Brendon LaBatte and Brett Jones. He topped the bench press test with 27 reps and was clearly the most athletic O-lineman in attendance. Rounding out the national combine invitees was rock solid Manitoba linebacker Thomas Miles, who tested well and brings an element of physical play to the table. My honourable mentions from the Edmonton regional go to scrappy Manitoba receiver Andrew Smith, who combines good leaping ability with a willingness to compete in the air for every ball, and Calgary kicker John Mark, who wasnt as accurate as usual, but hit the ball well on every field goal attempt. MONTREAL – There were twenty-seven draft eligible performers among the participants at Wednesdays Montreal regional combine, five of whom earned their way to the national event. Nigel Romick of Saint Marys distinguished himself in a very competitive defensive line group, testing very well across the board and showing great versatility by taking one-on-one reps at tackle, end and even linebacker. Sherbrooke receiver Francis Lapointe, one of the favourites among scouts entering the combine, lived up to his advance billing, running solid pass routes and tying for the fastest 40-yard dash of the day. Two running backs with very different skill sets will also be moving on to the national stage. Bruising fullback Alexandre Dupuis of the Montreal Carabins came back last fall from injuries to both knees that had wiped out his 2012 campaign and continued to impress with his work ethic and toughness. Meanwhile, Lavals shifty Guillaume Bourassa, who has always had to share time in the crowded Rouge et Or backfield, shone as both a receiver and blocker. Performing on the Concordia University field that he has called home for the last four years, Stingers linebacker Travis Bent also punched his ticket to Toronto. The native of Ajax, Ontario was one of the most heavily recruited players in this class coming out of high school. A number of other players also caught my eye in Montreal, led by Mount Allisons Quinn Everett, who shows good potential as an O-lineman after spending the last four years on the defensive side. Defensive linemen Vincent Desloges (Laval), Shaquille Armstrong (Concordia) and Sanmi Adereti (St.FX) all had their moments, as did receivers Nathan Heather and Mike Harrington, while McGill DB Mattey Ossom and Bishops LB Omar Smith-Jackson displayed outstanding athleticism. TORONTO – On Thursday, Toronto was home to the third and final regional combine with 25 draft eligible prospects on hand. Four would ultimately earn promotions to this weekends national combine, led by former St.FX defensive back Raye Hartmann. An AUS All-Star in 2011, Hartmann had sat out the last two seasons, but showed absolutely no signs of rust as the 62" Mississauga, Ontario native was dominant in pass coverage and excelled in testing. Big Queens receiver Scott MacDonell was equally impressive, using his 65", 225 lbs. frame to his advantage in one-on-ones. He runs well for his size and could certainly contribute at the next leavel with most teams, at least occasionally, employing a tight end package. The day got off to a bit of a rough start for Toronto running back Aaron Milton, when he raised some eyebrows by declining to do the bench press test, later citing a shoulder injury. The big back more than made up for it on the field, showing both explosiveness as a ball carrier and receiver, as well as a willingness to get his nose dirty in blocking drills. High-energy defensive end James Tuck of the York Lions snagged the other invitation, combining an impressive level of athleticism with an even more impressive effort level. Winnipeg-born, Texas-raised offensive lineman Tchissakid Player of Northwestern State was a virtual lock to claim a spot at the main combine until a pulled hamstring ruled him out. Strong-legged kicker Zack Medeiros (Western), waterbug receiver Quincy Van De Cruize (Bishops), and hard-working Guelph defensive tackle Jeffery Finley were among several who didnt advance but likely still helped their stock on Friday. LOS ANGELESSACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — In a story April 28 about responses to racist comments attributed to Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, The Associated Press misidentified a lawmaker who denounced the statements. Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, D-San Diego, spoke out against the comments, not Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown, D-San Bernardino. The NAACP has decided against honouring Donald Sterling with a lifetime achievement award from its Los Angeles chapter after the Clippers owner allegedly made racist comments in a recorded conversation. Donations made by Sterling, who has owned the team since 1981, will be returned, Leon Jenkins, president of the Los Angeles NAACP, said at a news conference Monday. Jenkins would not say how much money was involved. “There is a personal, economic and social price that Mr. Sterling must pay for his attempt to turn back the clock on race relations,” he said. Sterling, 80, had been scheduled to receive the honour on May 15 as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the Los Angeles branch of the nations oldest civil rights organization. He had been chosen to receive the award because of his long history of donating to minority charities and giving game tickets to inner city children, Jenkins said. The NAACP has honoured Sterling several times in the past. The Donald T. Sterling Charitable Foundation gave $5,000 to the NAACPs Los Angeles chapter in 2010, according to tax records, and Sterling was listed as his foundations only contributor. There were no records of further NAACP contributions in 2011 or 2012, the latest years for which records were available. Sterlings purported comments have overshadowed the NBAs opening playoff round and prompted an NBA investigation. The league is planning a Tuesday news conference to discuss the probe. There has been no official confirmation that it is Sterling on the recording, portions of which were released over the weekend by TMZ and Deadspin. Sterling “is emphatic that what is reflected on that recording is not consistent with, nor does it reflect his views, beliefs or feelings,” according to a statement from team president Andy Roeser on Saturday. Neither Sterling nor his representatives have since commented on the controversy. Jenkins, of the NAACP, was asked how detrimental he considered Sterlings alleged remarks. “On a scale of one to 10? Eleven,” he said. “It goes back to a segregation system and a time that nobody in America is proud of.” Members of the state Legislatures black caucus joined those denouncing Sterling. Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, D-San Diego, said lawmakers should not ignore the countrys history of discrimination. “Once again we are reminded of the ugliness and sometimes what appears to be the pervasive permanence of hatred,” Weber said while speaking in support of a resolution declaring Holocaust Remembrance Week. “So I want to simply challenge us as we go forward to not think that, Yes, we see the past, but recognize the past has a profound impact on the present. And if we are not conscious (of it), it will direct our future.” Assemblyman Isadore Hall, D-Compton and secretary of the black caucus, blasted Sterling and compared him to a “slave master” looking down at his African-American players. “Its an utter embarrassment,” Hall said in an interview after the floor session, “not just to the NBA, but also to all the individuals who believe that at some point, in California at least, we have risen above that, and we obviously havent.” . PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. - Hal Steinbrenner says Alex Rodriguez is “a great player” and “obviously an asset,” but the New York Yankees managing general partner wouldnt discuss the third basemans possible return to the team following a season-long suspension. Speaking to reporters at baseball owners meetings Wednesday, Steinbrenner said he isnt thinking about 2015. Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig suspended Rodriguez for 211 games in August, and arbitrator Fredric Horowitz cut the penalty last weekend to the 2014 season and post-season. The arbitrator found “clear and convincing evidence” the three-time AL MVP used three banned substances and twice tried to obstruct Major League Baseballs investigation of the Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic. Rodriguez responded by suing MLB and the players association in an effort to overturn the decision. Asked if he would welcome Rodriguez back, Steinbrenner said, “Hes a great player.” “I have not though about 2015, nor am I going to right now,” Steinbrenner said. “My focus has to be right now. But when hes on and when hes healthy, hes obviously an asset. Well see what happens.” Rodriguezs relationship with the Yankees became strained last summer, when he wanted to come off the disabled list following hip surgery before the team said he was ready. Rodriguez returned Aug. 5, the day Selig announced his suspension. In October, Rodriguez sued the Yankees team physician and a New York hospital, accusing them of mishandling his medical care during the 2012 AL playoffs. Rodriguezs salary this year was cut from $25 million to $2,868,852 because of the suspension; Horowitz decided baseball drug agreement requires he lose 162 days of pay over the 183-day season. New York was required to make a $3 million payment to Rodriguez on Wednesday, the last installment of the $10 million signing bonus that is part of the contract Rodriguez agreed to before the 2008 season. The Yankees owe A-Rod $21 million in 2015 and $20 million in each of the deals final two seasons. “Those of you that know me, Im pretty objective in my thinking,” Steinbrenner said. “This is business. Im just focusing on the team, a player. Is the player an asset to the club or not? Thats about as far as I look. I dont get personal.” . TORONTO – Once he got going, no one could calm Jonas Valanciunas down, despite Kyle Lowrys best efforts. As Valanciunas was whistled for a rare technical toward the end of the third quarter – a result of waving his hand at an official after being called for a foul – Lowry pulled the Raptors sophomore aside, corralling him by his jersey and patting him on the back. “Youve got to be smart in certain situations,” Lowry told the young centre. “I just tried to say look, you cant waste your money.” “Yeah, he was trying to calm me down,” Valanciunas said of the conversation with his point guard, speaking with a mischievous look on his face following the Raptors 98-91 win over the Cavaliers. “That technical foul cost me, so I feel bad now.” He shouldnt. The tech will cost Valanciunas a small fraction of his next paycheque but the unbridled emotion he played with in the second half of Fridays game was the driving force of Torontos rapid turnaround. Valanciunas, like the rest of his team, got off to an ugly start. The Raptors were fortunate to be down by only five going into the break, scoring just 39 points in the first half and shooting 33 per cent from the field. For the third straight game coming out of the All-Star break, Valanciunas got a quick hook in the first quarter. The seven-footer has been strangely quiet of late, averaging under six points in four games entering Fridays contest. His minutes have been down, as hes battled growing pains on the defensive end. After being sent to the bench midway through the opening quarter, he sat for around 12 minutes of game time before re-entering. Somewhere, somehow, someone lit a fire under the sophomore and not only did it spark him, it ignited the whole team. Valanciunas was a possessed man coming out of the halftime break. He was aggressive on defence, manic on the boards and dominant down low. He ran the floor with a purpose, worked to establish position, then demanded the ball. As he turned to face up Clevelands Tyler Zeller midway through the third, he pump faked – not once, but twice – took the contact and drained the jumper. Before completing the three-point play, he pumped his fist in the air and yelled out to the crowd, or the Cavs, or his teammates, or whoever was listening. His face was as red as the logo at centre court. He meant business. “Hes going to have ups and downs but tonight he was intense,” Lowry said of Valanciunas, who had 10 points and four rebounds in the third quarter, finishing the game with 18 points and eight boards. “He really kind of carried us with his intensity and his passion and fire tonight.” The 21-year-olds inspired play lifted the Raptors in what turned out to be a game-deciding third quarter. Toronto scored 37 points in the frame – two fewer than its first-half total – and shot 70 per cent, turning a five-point deficit at intermission into an 11-point advantage going into the fourth. “Hes our enforcer in the paint,” said Amir Johnson, who returned to the starting lineup Friday after coming off the bench in his two previous outings, nursing an ankle injury. “When he gets going, everybody else plays good and that just gets everybody open shots when hes scoring in the paint.” Johnson also came to life in the second half, the two bigs even hooked up on an alley-oop lob – from Johnson to Valanciunas – late in game. “We had to give our bigs a wakeup call,” Dwane Casey said. “They turned it around in the second half. We reminded them, theres more to the game than the offensive end.” “You can do a lot of different things other than make shots,” he continued, “and I thought the second half, Amir Johnson and JV worked at it and got it done.” Although Valanciunas helped turn the game, the best Raptor on the night – from start to finish – was fellow sophomore Terrence Ross, hands down. Ross scored a team-high 20 points, shooting 9-for-18, but his most important contribution was on the defensive end, where he went toe-to-toe with All-Star Game MVP Kyrie Irving. When the game began, Ross was assigned to check former Raptor Jarrett Jack while Lowry defended Irving. Early in the first quarter, there was a switch and Ross ended up on the Cavs point guard and leading scorer. It stuck for the rest of the evening, and Ross did not disappoint. The Raptors forward used his length and athleticism to frustrate Irving, forcing him to launch tough perimeter jumpers, keeping him out of the paint and holding him to 3-of-16 shooting. “He can score in a lot of different ways [and] get his teammates involved,” Ross said of Irving, who ended up with 17 points and nine assists for Cleveland. “So if you slow him down, you slow the team down.” “He had to chase [Irving] everywhere,” Johnson said of Ross. “He chased him off screens, he didnt quit on plays and thats how you have to play a guy like that. [Irvings] so crafty and hes always moving so you just have to keep a body on him and stay in front of him. [Ross] did a great job.” It was Canada Basketball Night at the Air Canada Centre Friday, as local product and first overall pick Anthony Bennett made his NBA debut in Toronto. Bennett, who continues to improve after a slow start to the season, knocked down his first two shots and finished with nine points in 15 minute of action while fellow Canadian Tristan Thompson scored 13 to go along with nine boards. In snapping Clevelands six-game winning streak, the Raptors picked up their 30th win of the campaign, doing so in just 55 games. It took them 78 contests to reach the 30-win mark a year ago. Kenseth followed his win in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship opener at Chicagoland with his series-high seventh victory of the season. Kenseth made his 500th career start and maintained his points lead as the series shifts to Dover. Kenseth and Busch made it a 1-2 finish for Joe Gibbs Racing for the second straight week and helped the organization win for the fourth time in the last five Cup races. Chase drivers filled six of the top 10 spots. Greg Biffle was third and Jimmie Johnson fourth. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was sixth and Carl Edwards ninth. Kenseth joins Biffle (2008) and Tony Stewart (2011) as the only drivers to win the first two Chase races. Stewart went on to win the title. Kenseth won for the first time at New Hampshire and moves on in the No. 20 Toyota to Dover, where hes a two-time winner. He led 29 laps there earlier this year before an engine failure ended his day. “For me to win at Loudon, its more than a stretch, more than a dream,” Kenseth said. “This is probably one of my worst places. This just shows you how good this team is.” JGR, with Busch, in the past has dominated the regular season, but dropped off considerably once the Chase began. NNow theyve carried over their success into the Chase and are a credible 1-2 threat to give Toyota its first Sprint Cup title.dddddddddddd. “Theres somebody faster so it doesnt matter how fast I am,” Busch said. " JGR has won five of the last seven races dating to Buschs win at Watkins Glen in August. Kenseth won at Bristol, Busch took Atlanta and Kenseth won the last two. Kenseth has obliterated his season best for wins. His previous high was five in 2002 and Kenseth won only once in 2003 when he won the Cup championship. While NASCAR has been smacked with scandal, Kenseth has quietly gone under the radar doing what he does best: winning races. He has 31 wins in 500 starts. “Its been a great start for JGR,” Kenseth said. “I just feel like the luckiest guy in the world to be standing here.” Chase drivers took spots 13-17: Kurt Busch, Joey Logano, Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman and Clint Bowyer. Kevin Harvick was 20th and Kasey Kahne slammed the inside wall with 48 laps left and was 37th. Kenseth took the lead from Bowyer with 92 laps left. Martin Truex Jr., whose future is in limbo after NAPA dropped its sponsorship of Michael Waltrip Racing in the wake of the NASCAR scandal at Richmond, led a race-high 98 laps. Jamie McMurray was the highest non-Chase finisher in fifth place. ’ ’ ’

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Vikings have ruled out running back Adrian Peterson for their final game of the season. The Vikings announced Saturday they downgraded Peterson from doubtful on the original injury report to out against Detroit Sunday, when the Vikings and Lions will play the last game at the Metrodome. Peterson sprained his right foot Dec. 8 at Baltimore and sat out the following week against Philadelphia. He played last Sunday at Cincinnati but was mostly ineffective. Peterson acknowledged afterward the injury affected his performance. He has also been bothered this year by a sore groin. Peterson finished the season with 1,266 yards rushing, the second-lowest total of his seven years in the NFL. . But after playing in England for more than a decade, Reo-Coker already recognized a key issue. He faces an adjustment as he prepares for his first Major League Soccer season.NEWARK, N.J. — Two days after being a healthy scratch against Buffalo, Matt Nieto had the perfect response for San Jose Sharks coach Todd McLellan. Nieto returned to the lineup and scored the game-winning goal at 6:20 of the third period and the Sharks defeated the New Jersey Devils 4-2 on Sunday. “Whenever you get a chance to be in the lineup, you have to have a positive impact and thats something I try to do whenever I am in,” Nieto said. Nieto not only returned to the lineup, he replaced Brent Burns on the top line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski. It worked out just fine, with Nieto also getting a great chance in the first period, breaking in from the left boards. “Its so easy playing with those guys,” said Nieto, who now has seven goals in 48 games and also played a key role as the Sharks killed off all four Devils power plays. “I just have to retrieve pucks for them, and when I get it to them, go to the net and get open.” The winner came on a counterattack after goaltender Alex Stalock made five of his 21 saves, including a two-on-none save against Patrik Elias. Thornton made a pass from the left boards to Pavelski in the middle of the ice. He found Nieto coming down the right side and the forward ripped a shot into the top corner of the net. “I had a couple of chances in the first period and wasnt able to elevate the puck,” Nieto said. “We knew in the pre-scout that we needed to get pucks high on this guy so I shot it high, and luckily it went by.” McLellan said he was not sending Nieto a message by sitting him the previous game. He just wanted to get some other players in the lineup. The coach admitted, he got the message, if Nieto was sending him one. “We have to listen, too,” he said. “He played well.” Logan Couture and Raffi Torres also scored and U.S. Olympian Joe Pavelski had the primary assists on the tying and winning goals as the Sharks won for the fifth time in six games. They were 2-1 on the road trip after the Olympics. Patrick Marleau iceed the game with a breakaway goal with 2:25 to play, his 25th of the season.dddddddddddd Adam Henrique and Patrik Elias scored for the Devils, who had a two-game, post-Olympic break winning streak snapped. Cory Schneider had 18 saves for New Jersey, which was playing its third game in four days. “We did a lot of good stuff,” Devils coach Pete DeBoer said. “We gave ourselves a chance under a tough circumstance to get points and it didnt happen.” The Sharks and Devils took turns taking the lead in the second period that featured four goals. Couture and Torres, who returned to the Sharks lineup after the Olympic break, scored in the second period and each has three goals since returning. Henrique, who has four goals since the break, and Elias, who has two, tallied for the Devils. Couture snapped a scoreless tie at 3:26 of the period, putting in the rebound of a Marleau deflection into an open net. Schneider contributed to the goal by playing the puck poorly behind his own net to set up a point shot by Jason Demers. Henrique tied the score a little more than a minute later, depositing a nice cross-ice pass from the right corner by Steve Bernier into an open net for his career-best 18th goal. Elias put New Jersey ahead about 10 minutes later, deflecting a point shot by rookie defenceman Jon Merrill past Stalock. The lead stood for 92 seconds as Torres and Pavelski worked a beautiful give-and-go on a 2-on-1 break that led to Torres third goal. He missed the Sharks first 59 games while recovering from knee surgery. He scored twice in his debut against Philadelphia on Thursday and sat out Fridays game against Buffalo. PHOENIX — Chase Anderson is the first Arizona pitcher to win his first three career starts. And the Diamondbacks offence has made it a lot easier for him. Arizona set a first-inning franchise scoring record on Wednesday night en route to a 12-6 victory over the San Diego Padres. The Diamondbacks scored 18 runs for him in his previous start. “Golly, I mean, shoot,” Anderson said. “What was it 18 runs the last time when we played against the Dodgers, 12 today? Thats a pitchers dream right there.” Rookie Tommy Medica fell a single shy of becoming the first Padre to hit for the cycle and would have had it had his screaming line drive dropped by third baseman Martin Prado not been ruled an error in the second inning. Medica said it “definitely” could have been ruled a hit. “Prado is great player,” he said. “I dont know if they are thinking it might be routine for him.” Prado and Paul Goldschmidt both hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs for Arizona. Diamondbacks rookie Chris Owings had his first big-league four-hit game. Goldschmidts homer travelled an estimated 470 feet, the farthest he can remember hitting one. Arizona, taking two of three from the Padres, scored eight runs and eight hits in the first, chasing starter Tim Stauffer (2-1) after just one-third of an inning. Anderson (3-0) got big support for the second straight outing. The Diamondbacks scored 18 runs for him in his previous start. Medica tripled in the third, doubled in fifth and homered in the eighth — one night after getting three hits, including a two-run homer, in the Padres 4-3 win. He had a final chance for that single in the ninth but flied out to centre. Anderson allowed four runs, just one earned, and eight hits in five innings to help Arizona win its second straight home series after losing its first seven. A.J. Pollock doubled twice, singled and drove in three runs in the Diamondbacks 17-hit effort. Arizona sent five batters to the plate in the opening inning before the first out. Pollock and Gerardo Parra opened the game with singles, then Goldschmidt doubled home Pollock. Miguel Montero walked to load the bases and Prado singled in a run. “Baseball at times is a very cruel game,” Padres manager Bud Blackk said. “Pollocks was just a bounding groundball that was hit in the right spot. Parra, a bounding ball hit in the right spot and not hit hard. Goldschmidt just a blooper down the right field line. Not hit hard. You look up and it is guys on second and third and one run in and they havent hit the ball hard.” Aaron Hill struck out — the only out for Stauffer who was making his second start after moving from the bullpen. Owings singled in a run, then Ender Inciarte singled in two more and it was 5-0 with two runners on base when Donn Roach replaced Stauffer. Pollock promptly doubled home both runners, then Arizona wrapped up the eight-run frame with Parras RBI double. In the Arizona second, Montero singled, then Prado smashed a line drive two-run shot into the Diamondbacks bullpen down the left field line, his second home run in as many games, and it was 10-0. Medica led off the fourth with a triple then scored on Jedd Gyorkos groundout. San Diego scored three unearned runs in the fifth. Everth Cabrera singled, then with the shift on for Seth Smith, Prado dropped a grounder to the right of second base, his second error of the game. Yonder Alonso singled in a run, then Medicas two-run double cut it to 10-4. Pollock opened the seventh with a double, then scored on Goldschmidts soaring home run to centre off Troy Patton to make it 12-4. The first-inning outburst was well off a franchise record for a San Diego opponent. The Padres gave up 11 runs in the first to St. Louis in 2005. NOTES: Arizona manager Kirk Gibson turned 57 on Wednesday. …The Padres announced that RHP Ronald Herrera is the player to be named in the deal that sent Kyle Banks to Oakland. … The Diamondbacks called up Nick Evans from Triple-A Reno and optioned OF Alfredo Marte to Reno. Evans replaced Goldschmidt at first base in the eighth. … The Padres have Thursday off and open a three-game series in Chicago against the White Sox on Friday … The Reds begin a 4-game series in Arizona on Thursday with Cincinnati sending LHP Tony Cingrani (2-4, 4.06 ERA) against Arizona RHP Josh Collmenter (3-2, 3.91). Malaga levelled two minutes later despite Pablo Perez being offside when he collected the ball before lifting a shot over goalkeeper Francisco Casilla. Malaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero made a number of key saves but couldnt reach Pizzis winner in the 75th. Malagas rally was stalled when Perez was red carded moments later. “An important win for ensuring we stay up in the first division,” Garcia said after Espanyol reached 40 points to go provisionally eighth. Athletic, which currently holds the final Champions League qualifying spot, provisionally stretched its advantage over fifth-place Sevilla to nine points. Sevilla hoosts Real Madrid, which is looking to rebound from its weekend defeat to Barcelona, on Wednesday.dddddddddddd Neither team dominated at the Elches Martinez Valero Stadium, with Bilbao coming close in the 16th when goalkeeper Manuel Herrera palmed Ander Herreras curling free kick over the bar. The hosts best chance came in the 72nd when Christian Herrera cut a shot back across the box but it ran wide of the far post. Elche moved three points clear of 18th-place Getafe and the drop. “The weather didnt help, the pitch didnt help, neither team played great,” Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera said. “I think we could have offered a better performance.” Atletico Madrid leads the standings with 70 points, the same as Madrid but it enjoys the tiebreaker. Atletico plays Granada on Wednesday, when Barcelona faces Celta Vigo. Defending champion Barcelona trails the two Madrid clubs by a single point going into the 30th round of games. ’ ’ ’

TORONTO — To prepare his players for the biggest game of their lives, Raptors coach Dwane Casey borrowed from the 2011 NBA champion Dallas Mavericks. “I go back to my experience. (Mavericks coach) Rick Carlisle has a thing, Wipe off the blackboard. Just wipe it off,” said Casey, an assistant under Carlisle on that 2011 Mavs squad. “Nothing on the blackboard is really going to make a difference at this time of year. At this game, Game 7, its mental.” The Raptors host the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday in a game that will either advance them into the second round of the post-season for just the second time in the franchises 19-year history, or send them home. Sundays winner faces the two-time NBA defending champion Heat in the Eastern Conference semifinals beginning Tuesday in Miami. By wiping the blackboard, Casey trusts the Raptors that have scraped and clawed to so many huge wins in this unexpected season of success wont go down without a fight Sunday. The coach likens his team to Freddie Krueger — the unkillable villain from “A Nightmare on Elm Street” movies and a name Casey has mentioned after virtually every unlikely victory this season. “Its our approach,” Casey said Saturday. “Its our toughness. Its our persistence on getting open. Our persistence in defending. Our persistence in going for loose balls, rebounds. Thats what this game is going to be about.” Casey had the Raptors at the Air Canada Centre for a long session Saturday, the morning after a woeful 97-83 loss to the Nets in Game 6 at Brooklyn. In a series that has been feisty since before the first ball was even thrown up, Nets centre Andray Blatche fired the latest shot Saturday night. “We guarantee were going to go there and take care of business and go to Miami,” Blatche told reporters at Barclays Center. The Raptors shrugged off the comment. “I dont care what he said,” said Raptors all-star DeMar DeRozan. “He can say what he wants, honestly. He can go out there and say hes going to hit the lottery tomorrow, I could give a hell.” Raptors backup guard Greivis Vasquez added: “I dont know who does he think he is. Hes not KG (Kevin Garnett) or Paul Pierce or Jason Kidd. Were not going to listen to his nonsense. Hes gotta earn that, and he hasnt yet.” Vasquez said the Raptors are focused only on themselves, and with good reason. They could have closed out the series Friday night, but instead slogged out to their worst opening quarter of the series Saturday night, and trailed by as much as 26 points. Once again, Casey showed his players video footage of the bouncing and cheering mass of fans that turned out to watch the game at Maple Leaf Square. “This is what youre playing for,” Casey told them. While the vastly-inexperienced Raptors battled nerves early on in the quarter-final series, Casey would have liked to have seen some Friday night. “I wanted nerves in the first quarter because we came out like we were in never-never-land,” the coach said. "We want the passion. We want the feelings. I dont mind nerves because a couple of times up and down the floor you get hit, you get knocked down, those nerves go away. “Weve just got to come out with a stronger constitution out of the locker-room.” DeRozan, who has shone in his first-ever play appearance, said theres more pressure on the Nets. Brooklyn assembled a star-studded squad with its sights set on an NBA title, signing all-stars Pierce and Garnett in the off-season. “Yeah, man. We aint got no 100 million, whatever payroll they got,” DeRozan said — the figure is actually US$180 million-plus with payroll and taxes. “Hey, thats all on them. At the end of the day they have more to lose than us.” The Raptors know that this season will be considered a success even if they dont make it to the second round. They were all but written off when the season began, and played to the low expectations until the blockbuster seven-player deal in December that sent Rudy Gay to Sacramento. The turnaround was remarkable. They went on to win their second Atlantic Division title, earning the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. The players — the majority of whom had little to no playoff experience when this series began — are soaking up every moment of their post-season run. “Honestly, this is what you live for, man — to play and be in moments like this, honestly, because they last forever,” DeRozan said. “Memories like that are going to last way after Im finished playing so youve definitely got to take advantage of it and understand youve got to go out there and play youre A-game.” Vasquez was asked how exciting it is to play a Game 7 at home. “See, thats the best question,” he replied. "Thats the best question. Were in a position right now to really make a solid push and then shut everybody up. You dont have to talk about our experience or anything like that, were going to get it done. “This is what you dream about. Thats when you go play at the park, you think about Game 7 against those guys. Its just fun.” Chuck Hayes, acquired in the Sacramento trade, has played in two Game 7s with the Houston Rockets. The Rockets lost them both, and he talked to the team about playing with that win-or-go-home urgency and energy. “You should be exhausted by the time the game is over with,” Hayes said. “You should be exhausted every timeout because the intensity is going to be risen, the atmosphere, everything. You probably wont even be able to hear yourself think. Its a fun experience though.” DeRozan, who likes to go to the Air Canada Centre to shoot baskets late at night, said he planned to head home after practice Saturday and have a nap. Hed then watch Friday nights Game 6 again, and “get mentally ready for (Sunday).” Vasquez, a father of two children, said he would spend Saturday night relaxing with his family to take his mind off the game. “I dont really like thinking about the game, like Ahhh, putting so much pressure on myself,” he said. "I think when you relax and let the game come to you — obviously, you focus, you get your rest, you watch other NBA games — thats the way I do it. “Im not going to lie, its a big game. Ive been in a Game 7 before to go in the conference finals and that was one of the best experiences I ever had. And (Sunday), I know for sure its going to be the best game of my life.” . The report states Lewan is scheduled to be arraigned in April on one count of aggravated assault and two counts of assault or assault and battery. LOS ANGELES — Hiroki Kuroda had to share the spotlight with new teammate Justin Sellers on Sunday, and the right-hander didnt mind one bit. Kuroda pitched seven strong innings, Sellers hit a three-run drive for his first major league homer and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Houston Astros 7-0 on Sunday to sweep their three-game series. Sellers was promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque when rookie Dee Gordon went on the disabled list on Friday. The 25-year-old shortstop is from nearby Bellflower and made frequent visits to Dodger Stadium with his parents when he was a child. “It was very special, exciting and emotional for me, my family and my friends who have been there supporting me ever since day one,” said Sellers, whose father Jeff spent four seasons in the big leagues as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. Sellers chased rookie Jordan Lyles with a drive into the lower seats in the left-field corner for his first three RBIs in the majors. The sixth-inning homer came in Sellers ninth big league at-bat. “My first reaction was: I knew I got it. Running around the bases was just the most incredible feeling Ive ever had,” said Sellers, whose favourite Dodgers growing up were sluggers Eric Karros, Mike Piazza, Darryl Strawberry and Eric Davis. “It was awesome to have my family here and get it. When I got to the dugout I got a lot of high-fives and hugs and stuff. Ive got chills right now talking about it.” Sellers teammates were certainly pumped — particularly catcher Dioner Navarro, who surprised him with a shaving cream pie in the face while he was doing a post-game TV interview on the field. “All home runs are exciting, but you never really forget your first one,” said Matt Kemp, one of several players who urged Sellers to acknowledge the curtain call he received from the crowd of 36,339. “Thats a good feeling. I know what it felt like to get my first home run. Hes from this area and had his family here, so it was a special moment. Im happy for him Hopefully, theres more to come.” Kemp matched his career high with his 28th homer for the Dodgers, who had lost four in a row before the lowly Astros came to Chavez Ravine. Navarro also went deep and scored twice. Kuroda (8-14) allowed five singles, struck out six and walked one. The 36-year-old right-hander, who came in tied with recently demoted Astros left-hander J.A. Happ for the most losses in the NL, won for only the third time in his last 15 starts despite a season ERA of just 2.88. Kurodas last five victories have come in games in which he didnt allow a run, dating to hiss 2-0 win at Pittsburgh on May 11.dddddddddddd “Im not really used to having this many runs. Id much rather have it than not have it, but my approach to pitching isnt any different,” Kuroda said through a translator. “Im a starting pitcher, and I want to keep the game close. So the less home runs I give up the better, but its not because of a lack of run support.” The rebuilding Astros have dropped a season-worst six straight games and 13 of 16 since unloading outfielders Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn before the non-waiver trade deadline. Houstons 38-83 record is the worst in the majors. The Astros trail NL Central-leading Milwaukee by a whopping 32 games — their largest deficit since ending the 1975 season a franchise-record 43 1/2 games off the pace. Lyles (1-7) gave up seven runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings, including all three home runs. The right-hander, who at age 20 is the youngest player in the majors, has a 5.31 ERA in 13 starts since beating the Chicago Cubs in his big league debut on May 31 at Wrigley Field. “I just made mistakes throughout the entire game and they made me pay,” Lyles said. “On Sellers home run, I was trying to punch him out with runners on first and second and then just hung a mistake over the plate.” Navarro hit a two-run shot in the second inning for his fifth homer and Kemp made it 3-0 in the third with his second homer in two days after a season-worst 11-game drought. Dodgers first baseman James Loney pulled off a slick unassisted double play to end the fourth inning, making a leaping grab of Carlos Lees line drive and spinning around to tag J.D. Martinez as he dove back to the bag. NOTES: Four of Navarros five homers this season have come in day games, one of them against Astros RHP Wilton Lopez in the eighth inning of a 1-0 victory on June 19 at Los Angeles. Kuroda also started that game and ended up with a no-decision after allowing just three hits in seven innings. … Pitching at Dodger Stadium for the first time, Lyles walked his first two batters of the game — equalling the number he had in 32 1-3 innings over his previous five starts. … The Dodgers only other three-game sweep this season came against San Diego at Chavez Ravine in the final series before the all-star break. The Padres and Astros, both last in their respective divisions, are a combined 92-151 and 46 1/2 games out of first place. … The Dodgers begin 10-game road trip through Milwaukee, Colorado and St. Louis on Monday night. 2B Jamey Carroll is batting a major league-best .344 on the road, compared to .253 at home. ’ ’ ’

The Rangers force Game Seven, the Blackhawks hold on home ice; notes on Martin St. Louis, Sidney Crosby, Rick Nash, Ryan Suter, Jonathan Toews, Bryan Bickell and more. RANGERS PUSH BACK Facing elimination once again, the New York Rangers took a 3-1 decision against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game Six, forcing the series to Game Seven. In the wake of his mothers sudden passing this week, Rangers RW Martin St. Louis has been put more in the spotlight, particularly with Sundays game falling on Mothers Day, and St. Louis got the Rangers on the board first, scoring 3:34 into the game. It hasnt been a glorious run for St. Louis with the Rangers, scoring four goals and 15 points in 32 (regular season plus playoff) games, but this was his first goal since Game Three against Philadelphia. If hes able to perform through this adversity, thats a real credit to him in what is surely a difficult time. Pittsburghs lone goal of Game Six came from C Brandon Sutter, who now has five goals in the playoffs; only Evgeni Malkin and Jussi Jokinen, both with six, have more for the Penguins. Penguins C Sidney Crosby was held off the scoresheet again, despite playing 24:23. Crosby has been a dominant player in the playoffs, even though his point totals havent followed. He has three points in the series, and one goal in a dozen playoff games, but the Penguins ultimately need goals when Crosby is on the ice and, to this point in the postseason, Crosby has been on the ice for eight goals for and eight goals against during 5-on-5 play. That frustration appeared to boil over in Game Six, with Crosby getting into a confrontation with Rangers C Dominic Moore, which then led to Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist squirting Crosby with a water bottle in the ensuing pile-up. The best of the Rangers in terms of Game Six possession stats was D Kevin Klein, on for 11 5-on-5 shot attempts for and five against. Klein is getting limited ice time, ranking sixth among Rangers defencemen in the postseason, but he has the best possession stats among Rangers blueliners and the second-best on the team. The one player with better possession stats than Klein, RW Rick Nash, maintains that lead despite getting overrun Sunday. With Nash on the ice, at 5-on-5, the Rangers had four shot attempts for and 22 against (15.4%); with Nash off the ice, the Rangers had 52.1% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. A bad possession game puts the exclamation mark on Nashs postseason struggles - he has no goals in his 51 shots on goal. Hes now seven away from the playoff record for most shots on goal without scoring, set last year by Jaromir Jagr. That the Rangers are taking this series to Game Seven, despite Nashs ongoing struggles and limited production from St. Louis, is a testament to the rest of the club but, to some degree, the same can be said for the Penguins, who are still waiting for Crosby to break out offensively. With Game Seven all thats left to decide which team goes to the Eastern Conference Final, its a prime opportunity for the stars on either side to make the difference. BLACKHAWKS HOLD HOME ICE After a slow start at home in Game Five, the Chicago Blackhawks picked up their game, and won 2-1 over the Minnesota Wild, taking a 3-2 lead in a series in which the home team has won every game. Minnesotas first-period goal came from rookie C Erik Haula, who has been a nice playoff contributor with three goals and six points in a dozen games, and the line of Haula, Matt Cooke and Justin Fontaine had the best possession stats among Wild forwards. D Jared Spurgeon had the best possession stats for the Wild, on the ice for 19 5-on-5 shots for and and nine against (67.9%). On the other hand, Wild D Ryan Suter, who played a game-high 28:32, was on the ice for 14 shot attempts for and 28 against (his most against in the playoffs). Suter gets charged with facing both of the Blackhawks top scoring lines but, on this night, he was getting stuck in his own end all too often. Chicagos second-period rally brought goals from LW Bryan Bickell and C Jonathan Toews. Bickell scored his team-leading sixth goal of the playoffs, on the power play, but was part of a very effective line with Peter Regin and Kris Versteeg; all three were on the ice for at least 68.8% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. The game-winner came from C Jonathan Toews, who was re-united with LW Patrick Sharp and RW Marian Hossa, as Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville was shuffling lines. Toews had a dominant game, with 76.0% of shot attempts. Chicago set the pairing of Niklas Hjalmarsson and Johnny Oduya out, primarily, against Zach Parise, Mikael Granlund and Jason Pominville, and Oduya had the games best possession stats, on the ice for 16 shot attempts for and four against. The Blackhawks controlled play significantly, but the win didnt come easily for them, and isnt really a surprise given how the first four games of the series played out. Theyll have a chance to finish off the Wild in Minnesota for Game Six but, considering that the Wild are 5-0 at home in the playoffs, outscoring opponents 16-5, it will come as no surprise if this series has to go the distance. SAN ANTONIO — Brandon Kozun scored two power-play goals — including the winner 34 seconds into the overtime period — and assisted on another to lead the Toronto Marlies over the San Antonio Rampage 4-3 in American Hockey League action on Friday night. Jerry DAmigo tied the game with less than a minute to go in the third period to force the extra frame, and Tyler Biggs also scored for the North division-leading Marlies (26-14-4). T.J. Brennan and Spencer Abbott each contributed with two assists. Bobby Butler scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season, which included a short-handed goal in the first period, and Captain Greg Rallo added the other for San Antonio (17-22-7) at 4:38 of the third period. Marlies goaltender Garret Sparks made 26 saves for the win, while San Antonios Jacob Markstrom stopped 22 shots in the losing effort. Toronto was 2 for 9 on the power play while the Rampage failed to score on seven opportunities with the man advantage. Both teams showed a lack of discipline throughout the game as the Marlies racked up 45 penalty minutes on 14 infractions, and San Antonio took 16 penalties totalling 38 minutes. Torontos Jerred Smithson was dealt a five-minute major and game misconduct for boarding at 16:15 of the second period. The Heat got rolled in the NBA Finals by San Antonio, losing in five games, the last three of them lopsided, and for the first time since 2011 there would be no championship parade in Miami.PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Martin Kaymer and Jordan Spieth are having a blast at The Players Championship — one because hes playing good golf again, the other because thats all hes been doing. Kaymer followed his record-tying 63 on the Stadium Course on the TPC Sawgrass with a 3-under 69, capping off his round by hitting a pitching wedge to 3 feet on an island green with a back pin on the 17th hole. He had a one-shot lead going into the weekend as he tries to end more than two years without a victory. “Everything is coming together nicely,” said Kaymer, a former PGA champion and world No. 1. Spieth, in his first big tournament since his runner-up finish at the Masters, hasnt shown any signs of a letdown. He pieced together another bogey-free round and converted pure swings into tap-in birdies on consecutive holes on the back nine that carried him to a 6-under 66. “I dont think its going to be possible to stay bogey-free for two more rounds with the greens firming up,” Spieth said, not sounding at all like someone making his Players Championship debut. “Thats a nice goal to have, I think. When bogeys come, its going to be how I rebound.” Kaymer was at 12-under 132. That matched the best 36-hole score on the Stadium Course at the TPC Sawgrass in 20 years, dating to Greg Normans record-setting performance. Norman made only one bogey that week. Spieth hasnt made a bogey all week — he has gone 51 holes without a bogey going back to the third round at Hilton Head — though he had to make a couple of tough chips look easy to keep a clean card. The 20-year-old Texan was still on the practice range when he saw Kaymer finish at 12 under, a score that felt impossible to catch in warm, blustery weather. The grass remained soft on the golf course, however, allowing players to take aim at the flags. Some players had no choice. Adam Scott, in his first tournament as a married man, kept alive his hopes of going to No. 1 in the world this week with three birdies in his last four holes for a 67. That was a 10-shot improvement from Thursday and enabled him to make the cut on the number at even-par 144. Brantford, Ont., native David Hearn finished the second round in a tie for 25th place. Rory McIlroy shot 42 on the front nine and appeared headed home early until making birdie on the 18th hole to salvage a 74 to make the cut. Not so fortunate was Phil Mickelson. He missed his birdie attempt on No. 18 and had a 70 to miss by one. Mickelson now has missed the cut in the two biggest events of the year — the Masters and The Players.dddddddddddd “I dont feel bad about the game,” Mickelson said. “But mentally, Im just really soft right now.” Kaymer is winless dating to the HSBC Champions in Shanghai at the end of 2011. The more good scores he sees, the more often his name is on a leaderboard, the more confidence he gains. Darren Clarke watched it for two days, referring to him as a “finely tuned engineer.” Even so, the 29-year-old German is hesitant to look beyond the next day. He knows its tough to follow a record-tying round with anything remotely close. So he lowered his expectations, figuring anything around par would be suitable, and then kept his distance from the field. “Yesterday was just a very special day for me,” he said. “Even though I shot 9-under par yesterday … if people want to talk negative about it, I then shot six shots worse. But you can always go in the negative. I see very positive things that I backed up that 9-under par with another decent round.” Spieth was even better. He had to scramble for par from short of the ninth green and from behind the 10th green. He hit his stride in the middle of the back nine with two shots that were nearly identical — a 6-iron on the par-3 13th that rode the ridge down to about 4 feet, and a 6-iron from 184 yards on the 14th to 3 feet. “It was a nice break to land and roll to pin-high, because it was a very tricky pin with quite a bit of slope around the hole,” he said. Spieth has said he was proud of how he played the final round of the Masters, even with a two-shot lead with 11 holes to play. His game looks every bit as solid at Sawgrass, a course he had only seen while playing a junior event. He finished second in that one, too. And thats what keep him going. Asked he if was getting bored being in contention so much, he smiled and said, “No, because I havent won one.” “You should probably have to win every time in order for it to get boring,” he said. “But not even Tiger gets bored.” Russell Henley didnt make a par over his last six holes — three bogeys, three birdies — for a 71 and was in third place at 8-under 136. Sergio Garcia (71), U.S. Open champion Justin Rose (71), Gary Woodland (71), Lee Westwood (71) and Jim Furyk (68) were six shots behind. The course appeared to be getting slightly firmer by the end of the day. The excitement figures to start on the weekend. ’ ’ ’

NEW YORK — San Francisco Giants right-hander Matt Cain needs surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow, an operation that likely will end his season. The three-time All-Star sure hopes not. Giants manager Bruce Bochy is fairly certain his one-time ace is done for the year. “If youre putting odds on it, the odds are not going to be that he will pitch,” Bochy said Friday. Cain played catch on flat ground, from 60 feet, before the Giants played the New York Mets and is waiting to see how his arm responds before making a decision on when he will have surgery. Bochy, though, said the team allowed him to throw just to “check off that box.” Cain has not pitched since July 9 and is 2-7 with a 4.18 ERA. He was checked by Dr. James Andrews, Giants orthopedist Dr. Ken Akizuki and Mets orthopedist Dr. David Altchek. All three doctors were in agreement: the chips have to come out. “Ive had them for 10 years,” Cain said. “Theyve always been there. Now theyre mad and letting me know about it.” Bochy says Cain will need about three months recovery time so he should be ready for spring training regardless of when he has the operation. The Giants acquired Jake Peavy in a deal with Boston last week. “Fortunate that Jake Peavy was available,” Bochy said. “He helps soften that.” NOTES: The Giants designated 2B Dan Uggla and OF Tyler Colvin for assignment. They filled the spots by calling up Double-A INF Matt Duffy and OF Jarrett Parker. Uggla was signed by San Francisco on July 21 after being cut by Atlanta and called up four days later. In four games, Uggla was 0 for 11 with six strikeouts, and he made three errors. Colvin batted .223 in 57 games for the Giants this year. … Bochy said 1B Brandon Belt (concussion) ran and took grounders. Bochy wasnt sure if Belt needed a rehab game, but he could play this weekend. … CF Angel Pagan (back inflammation) is scheduled to play seven innings in Arizona on Friday and could move to Triple-A Fresno on Saturday. Bochy says Pagan could return Tuesday in Milwaukee. . . PETERSBURG, Fla. LONDON — Arsenal stayed top of the Premier League after scoring two late goals in a 2-0 win over Cardiff while fellow title rivals Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool also started the year with victories on Wednesday. However, the league trophy looks more out of reach than ever for Manchester United after the reigning champions lost 2-1 at home to Tottenham and fell 11 points behind Arsenal. Nicklas Bendtner and Theo Walcott scored Arsenals goals at Emirates Stadium to beat a resilient Cardiff team which played in front of expected new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and frustrated the hosts for 88 minutes in the driving rain. “We have a special spirit in the side and you know well fight until the last minute in the game,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. City remained a point behind in second after a 3-2 win at Swansea, while Chelseas 3-0 victory at Southampton in awful weather conditions ensured Jose Mourinhos team stayed in third place, two points behind the leaders. After two consecutive losses, Liverpool climbed back into the top four after Luis Suarez scored his 20th goal of the season in a 2-0 win over Hull. Spurs climbed above United into sixth place — two points behind Liverpool — after goals by Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen earned them a second straight league win at Old Trafford. United has now lost four times at home this season. “The margin of error has been slim for a long time,” United manager David Moyes said of his teams title hopes. Arsenal had to wait until two minutes from time before Bendtner gave the Gunners reasons to celebrate the start of a new year when he pounced from a rebound. The striker picked up an ankle injury while scoring and was substituted before Walcott chipped the ball over goalkeeper David Marshall. “He was a bit unlucky, he said he landed on the foot of a Cardiff player and sprained his ankle,” Wenger said. “It looks like it is not a question of days, but weeks.” In other games, Everton fell to fifth by being held 1-1 draw by Stoke, Aston Villa beat last-place Sunderland 1-0, Fulham earned a comeback 2-1 win over West Ham to climb out of the relegation zone, Crystal Palace drew 1-1 with Norwich and West Bromwich Albion beat Newcastle 1-0. Man City carried its recent form into 2014 and recorded the first goal of the year after 14 minutes when Fernandinho gave Manuel Pellegrinis team the lead at Liberty Stadium. Wilfried Bony put the hosts back in the game with a header but City was more cliinical after the interval and pulled away with goals from Yaya Toure and Aleksandar Kolarov before Bony pulled another one back.dddddddddddd Fernando Torres helped Chelsea to a 3-0 victory over Southampton as the Blues kept pace with their rivals. The Spain striker broke the deadlock on the hour mark, heading home a deflected cross from close range. Chelseas substitutes then combined to deliver the second, with Oscar cutting in from the left to set up Willian for a powerful shot from the edge of the area in the 71st minute. Oscar then put the result beyond doubt with a clinical finish in the 82nd minute after Eden Hazard and Ramires linked up to put the Brazilian through. Suarez set a Premier League record when he scored his 20th Premier League goal in just 15 games after missing five matches with a suspension. He doubled the Reds lead in the 50th minute with a perfect free kick curled into the top left corner after Daniel Agger had headed home Philippe Coutinhos corner to make it 1-0 in the 36th. “It was our best win of the season,” said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers. “After a tough period, to get a result like that against a very good team.” Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard made his return off the bench to play his first game since picking up a hamstring injury in early December. The other Liverpool club, Everton, had a less enjoyable day. Leighton Baines converted an injury-time penalty, cancelling out Oussama Assaidis goal for Stoke, to earn his side a draw that could not prevent it from slipping to fifth. United has now dropped 26 points, one more than it did in the whole of the teams title-winning campaign last season. Danny Welbecks fifth goal in five games, which made it 2-1 after 67 minutes, was the only bright spot on a miserable evening for United, whose four-match winning run in the league came to an end. Aston Villa ended its five-match winless run by beating Sunderland and goals from Steve Sidwell and Dimitar Berbatov helped Fulham defeat 10-man West Ham. Saido Berahino converted an 87th-minute penalty to secure the win for West Brom, overshadowing the return of Nicolas Anelka after his controversial goal celebration. Newcastle looked like holding on for a draw despite the 62nd-minute sending-off of defender Mathieu Debuchy for a two-footed tackle on Claudio Yacob. Anelka started despite being the subject of a league investigation for celebrating a goal against West Ham on Saturday with a gesture that has anti-Semitic connotations. ’ ’ ’
