BARCELONA, Spain — Barcelona forward Neymar has returned to training after being sidelined by a right ankle sprain. The Brazil striker worked with the ball at Barcelonas training ground on Monday, the first time hes touched one since injuring himself in a Copa del Rey match at Getafe on Jan. 16. Barcelona did not disclose when it expects Neymar to return to action, although the initial diagnosis expected him to be sidelined for three to four weeks. That would put him in line to return next week. Barcelona slipped three points back of Spanish leader Atletico Madrid after Saturdays 3-2 loss to Valencia at the Camp Nou. The Catalan club next plays at Real Sociedad on Wednesday in the first-leg of its Copa del Rey semifinal. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets have re-signed versatile backup linebacker Garrett McIntyre. McIntyre became a free agent last month after he was not tendered an offer by the Jets as a restricted free agent. The team announced the deal Wednesday, but did not release terms. McIntyre was signed by the Jets in 2011 after stints in the Arena Football League and Canadian Football League. He has 5 1/2 sacks, 72 tackles and two forced fumbles in 42 games, including 10 starts, with New York. An undrafted free agent out of Fresno State in 2006, the 29-year-old McIntyre has also spent time with Seattle, Arizona and Tennessee. Téma: Nadační fond - ONE MORE DAY FOR CHILDREN / ime a crucial situation

Stat of the week!!! Torontos back-up quarterback, third-year player from Edinboro, Trevor Harris, had two special teams tackles. Never a good thing when thats happening. Although Harris did show us 400-metre strength, speed and endurance while tracking down the speedy returner from West Virginia, Jock Saunders, on the missed field goal return of 121 yards. That play showcases how unpredictable and explosive our great brand of football can be here in Canada and also gives us an insight as to how you can make a bye week only two weeks into the season pay off. To ensure there were no blues, loss of continuity or complacency pertaining to the execution of schemes, the Stampeders coaching staff and players reloaded and actually extended their playbook. This was evident on Saunders missed field goal return. Coach Mark Kilam, in his tenth year coaching for the Stampeders, and fifth as special teams coordinator, had his return teams locked, loaded and dialed in, ready to pounce on this very opportunity. Anticipating a missed field goal, a wall return left was executed like clock work. Saunders, while making an acrobatic catch on the errant field goal attempt as he was tight roping the very back of the end zone, started to his left and quickly became the beneficiary of his teammates hustle and preparation. Before you knew it, Saunders, the first year Stampeder, was bursting down the sideline with Kilam himself not far behind. With sheer determination and athletic ability, Argonaut Harris, who was holding for third year kicker from Alabama-Birmingham, Swayze Waters, on the field goal attempt, somehow tracked down Saunders. Sometimes we see these extra effort and hustle plays pay off, but in this case the Stamps third year quarterback, from Eastern Washington, Bo Levi Mitchell cashed in quickly with a quick TD strike. Bang, ten-point swing just like that! Exciting and unpredictable. To have a designed missed field goal return implemented at this juncture of the season is one thing, but to be able to execute all the moving parts that are required in order to pull it off, is really heady stuff. Another example of how Calgary used the extra prep time to their advantage was the direct snap to Saunders, throwback to Mitchell, chunk it over the top to Anthony Parker. This early in the season, teams are working diligently to find rhythm and consistency in the basics of their respective systems, let alone trying to master plays like the flea-flicker. Maybe Saunders was the only running back who had the ability to throw it back to Mitchell, but to have that play in the game plan at this stage and the way it was executed, is an indicator that Calgary had the extra time and spent it wisely. If you still are not convinced that this extra week of prep time holds merit for teams and in this case the Stampeders, look to whom the Stamps had to replace in only their second game of the season. Missing was Jon Cornish, reigning Most Outstanding Player in the CFL and two electrifying receivers in Nik Lewis and Mo Price. The Stamps offence found a way to survive and even thrive. Second year receiver from Texas A&M, Jeff Fuller flexed his athletic ability and found the end zone twice, picking up some of the slack. Fourth year receiver from University of Calgary, Anthony Parker seemed well versed and more at ease performing his responsibilities, contributing four catches for 101 yards and a score. Third year running back, also from the University of Calgary, Matt Walter continues to round out into form when given the opportunity. Id also say that Walter took on more of a work load than usual in this contest because of the added time the Stamps were afforded. Walter was involved downfield in the passing game on play 115 from scrimmage, a fake screen pass. This is when he releases out of the backfield giving the defence a look like he is going to block the defender whos covering the receiver faking the hitch screen and then at the last possible moment, he turns it up the rail as the defence bites on the screen. You see it all the time in the CFL but primarily with your starters executing these timing plays, not your back ups. Not a believer yet? How about the Stampeders defence shutting down the high powered offence of Toronto led by 12-year veteran quarterback from Sacramento State, Ricky Ray. Ray had his streak of ten games in a row throwing a touchdown pass broken. We are talking about an offence that put up 559 total yards of offence against the defending Grey Cup Champion Saskatchewan Roughriders defence the week before and looked lethal. Defensive coordinator Rich Stubler had his men on point to where they held the Ray-led Argos out of the end zone for just the second time since Ray has been an Argo. Now I must say Ray and company moved the ball between the twenties but thats where the well devised defensive gameplan came into play. Dont give up the big play and make Toronto be patient series after series. In other words, play everything in front of you and rally to the ball. Certainly easier said than done, but the plan was implemented and well executed. So an early quirk/bye in the schedule actually pays off for the Stampeders as they were able to prepare, plug and play players without missing a beat and actually extend a few of their philosophies and schemes in only Week 2 of the season. Calgarys next bye week is a long ways off, coming in Week 16. Ill bet you they will embrace that bye week as much and if not more than they did in Week 2! Heres a look at the remaining bye weeks for each CFL team. To suggest a mutual parting of the ways between the Blue Jays and their former closer after two and a half injury-interrupted seasons would be right on the mark. After the 31-year-old laboured through the seventh of Saturdays 10-3 loss to the Rays, an inning in which he gave up two runs on three hits and two walks to spike his season ERA to 7.78, Santos suggested hes having difficulty getting into a groove due a lack of consistent game action. “Its just kind of, to get that slider was a little tough today,” said Santos. “I dont know if it has to do with not getting as much work in the last couple of weeks as I would have liked but thats part of the game as well.” Santos time in Toronto has been a grind. Acquired from the White Sox for pitcher Nestor Molina before the 2012 season, he was supposed to be the Blue Jays closer for years to come. There was reason to believe. Santos had authored a 30-save campaign for Chicago in 2011, his second season in the big leagues after converting to pitcher from shortstop, the position he played when the Jays had him in their system in the mid-2000s. However, a shoulder injury in April, 2012, turned out to be season ending when it required surgery. Two weeks into the 2013 season, Santos went down with a triceps strain and a month later underwent a procedure to clean bone spurs out of his elbow. Santos was terrific upon his return in the final two months of the year, making 24 of his 29 appearances and allowing earned runs in only three of them. This year, Santos went to the disabled list after a May 9 appearance with a forearm strain. He returned on June 17 and after six-straight scoreless appearances (5 1/3 innings), hes been hit hard in his last four outings, allowing five earned runs in just 2 1/3 innings. He insisted its not a matter of confidence. “Not so much that,” said Santos. “Once you get in the flow of the game and you get there consistently its a lot easier to kind of have those pitches. When you dont its just tough because you can throw as many flat grounds and bullpens as you want but theres nothing like a game situation.” Santos wants the ball more and feels thats the only way hell harness a slider that, when Santos is commanding the pitch, is as nasty as any in the game. On the other hand, manager John Gibbons cant be blamed for using Santos in mop up duty. Until a relief pitcher proves he can perform in relatively non-pressure situations, hes unlikely to be handed the ball with the game on the line. Santos did rack up five saves to start the year when Casey Janssen was down with an oblique strain but he blew his next three, including on that frigid night in Minneapolis when the bullpen allowed six runs on just one hit, an otherworldly eight walks and three wild pitches in the eighth inning of a loss to the Twins. Santos hasnt been the same since. Its believed general manager Alex Anthopoulos is facing the same budgetary pressures he did during the quiet offseason. There is a need to upgrade the bullpen. There is a need to acquire an infielder. While the club has been pleasantly surprised by the performance of its starting corps, there isnt a team in baseball that wouldnt upgrade its rotation if presented with the right deal. Santos makes $3.75-million, the final guaranteed year of a deal that includes three consecutive cllub options ($6-million in 2014; $8-million in 2015; $8.dddddddddddd75-million in 2016). Given the strange nature of relievers, how they can go from underachievers to consistent performers and vice versa in the blink of an eye, Santos could be of use to another team with playoff aspirations. He has the stuff. He also has a salary that, if moved, would help to facilitate a dollar in-dollar out deal. Anthopoulos talks often about getting “creative” in trade talks. This one seems rather obvious. McGowan explains Friday meltdown Dustin McGowan has generally been very good since returning to the Blue Jays bullpen on May 18. In 22 relief appearances, the 32-year-old has posted an ERA of 2.86 and an opponents OPS of .605. Hes allowed earned runs in only three appearances. Yet the perception of McGowan is changing, somewhat, because his two biggest meltdowns have happened recently and theyve both been ugly. On June 28 against the White Sox, it took McGowan one pitch to erase what had been 6 2/3 innings of scoreless work by Marcus Stroman. He hung a slider to Dayan Viciedo, who hit a three-run home run to turn a 2-0 Jays lead into a 3-2 deficit, from which Toronto wouldnt recover. Fast forward to Friday night, with four scoreless appearances (four innings) in between, McGowan entered the game in the seventh inning with a 5-2 lead. He walked Evan Longoria on a full count. He walked James Loney on five pitches. That brought up right-handed hitting Sean Rodriguez, who on the third pitch in a 1-1 count slammed a game-tying home run. Just like the pitch to Viciedo, it was a cement-mixer slider. “It seems to be my nemesis right now, the hanging slider,” said McGowan. “Ive got to fix that.” In advance of the home run, McGowan was up with his fastball and at other times wide. He was bouncing his slider but the Rays wouldnt offer. He knew in the bullpen he was in for a battle. “Getting loose I was a little erratic, too” said McGowan. “For me, sometimes, its different coming from the pen to the mound, usually you can lock in on a hitter. Its just one of those games where I couldnt find anything.” While McGowan admitted the sting of failure more than once in a brief period can affect confidence, he vowed the next time a crucial situation called for a slider, hell throw it. It doesnt hurt the psyche when the team bounces back and wins, as the Jays did with three runs in the ninth for an 8-5 final score. “That made it a lot better,” said McGowan. “If we had lost the game it would have been really hard on me but we came back and won the game, the guys battled back and that made it a lot easier.” Kawasaki okay Munenori Kawasaki wasnt in Saturdays starting lineup after feeling hamstring tightness the night before. Approached by TSN.ca, Kawasaki announced his availability. “No problem,” said Kawasaki. “I play today.” Kawasakis hit .289 in 23 games since rejoining the club on June 17. Hes proven an adequate defender at second base. “Just cramps,” said Kawasaki. “Just cramps. I play today, no problem.” Reimold not okay Nolan Reimold also was injured in Friday nights game and the news on the recently acquired outfielder isnt as good. An MRI revealed a left calf strain. Reimold was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Anthony Gose was recalled to take Reimolds place. ’ ’ ’

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Five former Kansas City Chiefs players who were on the team between 1987 and 1993 filed a lawsuit Tuesday claiming the team hid and even lied about the risks of head injuries during that time period when there was no collective bargaining agreement in place in the NFL. The lawsuit was filed in Jackson County Circuit Court on behalf of former players Leonard Griffin, Chris Martin, Joe Phillips, Alexander Louis Cooper and Kevin Porter, all of whom played on defence. It seeks more than $15,000 in actual and punitive damages. All five players have opted out of a multimillion-dollar settlement announced this summer that would compensate former players for their head injuries. The Kansas City plaintiffs claim to be suffering from post-concussion syndrome and latent brain disease because of multiple concussions they sustained while playing for the Chiefs. They all claim also to be suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which can only be definitively diagnosed by examining the brain after death. Martin, a Kansas City resident who played linebacker for the Chiefs from 1988 to 1993, said at a news conference he didnt know that continuing to play in games after sustaining a head injury would cause permanent damage. “I would have liked to have the opportunity to know that going back on the field would cause me to have severe disabilities later in life,” he said. “I didnt know that. Thats what the lawsuit is about.” Chiefs spokesman Ted Crews and NFL spokesman Greg Aiello both declined to comment on the suit. Hours after Martin talked about his brain injuries, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodells wife, Jane, and the wives of former NFL players Howie Long and Mike Golic led a discussion with hundreds of mothers about why they should let their children play football. As part of the safety clinic at the Chiefs training facility, roughly 200 women of all ages took part in drills designed to teach them proper tackling techniques. Nearly a dozen former Chiefs, including Hall of Fame linebacker Bobby Bell, walked the giddy moms through the drills. Roger Goodell and Chiefs owner Clark Hunt also addressed the women, but did not bring up the lawsuit. They were not available to answer questions from the media. Plaintiffs attorney Ken McClain called the proposed $765 million settlement between the NFL and former players insignificant and said it provides compensation only to the former players with the most severe brain injuries. None of the five plaintiffs will get monetary compensation under that deal, he said. “All theyre going to be is monitored over time, but no relief will be offered to them,” McClain said. “Its really a very small amount of money if you do the math. Its paid out over 20 years, its $765 million total. Its a little under $20 million a year the teams are contributing to these very severely injured people. Its not very much money.” It wasnt known whether similar lawsuits might be filed in other states, given the nations patchwork workers compensation laws. McClain said Missouri presented a “unique opportunity” because a state workers comp statute was amended in 2005 to exclude cases of occupational injury that occur over an extended time. That exception more commonly applies in workplaces where smoking is allowed and workers suffer lung problems because of it. McClain also represented workers at a Jasper popcorn plant who were awarded millions of dollars in lawsuits claiming they got cancer because of a chemical in butter flavouring used at the plant. The lawsuit says the Chiefs ignored decades of research indicating that concussions cause long-term brain damage, instead referring to the injuries as “getting your bell rung” or a “ding.” It accuses the team of lying to players in saying concussions are not serious injuries. “Every time I would get a head injury I would stay in or come to the side and get smelling salts and go back in,” Martin said. “The pressure was there. If you were first team, you got all the reps.” McClain said the notion that CTE can be diagnosed only through a post-mortem examination is outdated. “Thats an old position,” he said. “Most of the neurologists weve been in discussion with believe most if not all professional football players do have CTE to some degree or another.” Fellow plaintiffs attorney Dirk Vandever cited a recent UCLA study in which researchers said they were able to correlate some of the clinical problems they found and conclude they likely represent CTE. “After you see 19 out of 20 brains autopsied have CTE, as well as the ongoing widespread nature of the injury to players, doctors are fairly able to conclude players, based upon their symptomology, do or do not have the disease,” Vandever said. In recent years, a string of former NFL players and other athletes who suffered concussions have been diagnosed after their deaths with CTE, including Junior Seau and Ray Easterling, who both committed suicide. In August, the NFL agreed to settle lawsuits filed by more than 4,500 former players who developed dementia or other concussion-related health problems they say were caused by playing football. The settlement, subject to approval by a federal judge in Philadelphia, would apply to all past NFL players and spouses of those who are deceased. Plaintiffs attorneys say individual payouts would be capped at $5 million for men with Alzheimers disease; $4 million for those diagnosed after their deaths with a brain condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy; and $3 million for players with dementia. About 19,000 retired players would be eligible to seek awards or medical testing, but current players are not part of the deal. The settlement does not include an admission from the NFL that it hid information from players about head injuries. At the time, the settlement announcement appeared to remove a major legal and financial threat hanging over the NFL. But if too many former players opt out, the deal could fall apart. cheap jerseys . PAUL, Minn.MONTREAL – If its not a must-win game, the Montreal Impacts home opener is certainly one they would very much like to win. After opening the Major League Soccer season with two tight losses on the road, the Impact will play host to the Seattle Sounders before more than 25,000 at Olympic Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It will be a first home game for new coach Frank Klopas, the first time Brossard, Que., native Patrice Bernier will play at home as team captain, and the last that star striker Marco Di Vaio will sit out from the three-game suspension he got for wading into a skirmish in the playoffs last October. “Its the third game of the season, but we need to start getting some points,” former Chicago Fire boss Klopas said this week. "Its good to be home. “We definitely felt that we should have picked up some points on the road, but thats the game.” The Impact opened the season March 8 with a 3-2 loss in Dallas marked by a harsh penalty awarded to the home team. They followed a week later with a 1-0 defeat in Houston. There was a feeling the team played better in the second game — that the defence was sharper, that better chances were created and that Di Vaios replacement Andrew Wenger looked more comfortable up front. “We have some momentum even if were 0-2,” said Bernier, who replaced the departed Davy Arnaud as captain. "Its not like we played bad and got cleaned out. “We felt we progressed last game from the first game and now were coming home. We have to defend our home and weve been very good at home the last two years. This is a game that could send us in the right direction and give us a positive boost.” They are up against a Seattle side (1-1-0) with a formidable attack, but which is coming off a 2-1 loss at home to Toronto FC on former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoes pair of first-half goals. The Sounders, old foes of the Impact from their A-League and United Soccer League days, have not beaten Montreal in MLS play. The Impact won 4-1 in Montreal in 2012 and opened the 2013 campaign with a 1-0 win in Seattle. But Seattle has been among the better away sides in MLS, with a 29-28-24 road record since they entered the league in 2009.dddddddddddd Di Vaio and midfielder Andres Romero, both with three game suspensions, wont see action until a March 29 game in Philadelphia. In Di Vaios absence, winger Justin Mapp and attacking midfielder Felipe Martins have led the offence. The veteran Mapp was among their best players last season, but Felipe looks to have rebounded from a mediocre campaign and is looking more like the energetic playmaker he was as a rookie in 2012. He has yet to score, but leads the team with eight shots. “I had a few chances,” he said. "But the hardest thing is to create chances and were doing that. “The only thing is we have to put it in the net, but that is going to come. Its not after one or two games you have to figure out whats going on. Its just soccer, no? One time a goal goes in and after that it comes natural.” Klopas likes what hes seen of the Brazilian. “He missed the beginning of the season with injury last year and that was one reason his fitness level and sharpness werent the same,” the coach said. "Hes a guy that sometimes doesnt get the points, but he helps the team in so many ways without the ball, with his work rate and stuff like that. “Ive been very pleased with him and I know he has a lot more room to grow.” Bernier, coming off knee surgery, missed the season opener but got in 72 minutes in Houston. The team is still waiting for Bernier, Felipe and designated player Hernan Bernardello to all be at peak form to see what the centre of their midfield can do. Bernardello was injured shortly after signing last summer. The Impact are to play their first three home games at the Big O before moving outdoors to Saputo Stadium. Klopas coached Chicago against the Impact in Montreals first MLS game at Olympic Stadium in 2012, a 1-1 draw. “Its amazing that two years ago I was on the opposite side in the first game here, with a tremendous atmosphere,” he said. “I hope its the same, only now theyre cheering for me and our team.” ’ ’ ’

MADRID, Spain — Real Madrid presented its redesign of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Friday, a reported 400 million euros ($540 million) renovation it expects will transform its home ground into a world icon. German company GMT Architects, which has also designed the Arena Amazonia World Cup stadium in Manaus, Brazil, will lead the redesign which will see the stadium receive a new exterior with a hotel and shopping centre added. Madrid, which has debts of over 500 million euros ($675 million), plans to finance the project by selling naming rights to the stadium and through a bond issue among Madrid members. President Florentino Perez says “we want the new stadium to be a world icon.” The Bernabeu, which was inaugurated in 1947, was last reworked for the 1982 World Cup. Grossman and rookie George Springer homered for the Astros, who moved into fourth place by a percentage point over slumping Texas. It is the first time in their two seasons since switching leagues that the Astros have not been in fifth place in the five-team AL West after mid-April. “When you look at where were at today, obviously we feel like we have improved as a ballclub,” Porter said. “At the same time, when we get to the end of the year, well see where were at. It definitely feels good to be playing good baseball right now.” Springer also made an incredible running catch in the third inning. The centre fielder leaped on the warning track, reached over his head and held onto the ball when he slammed into the wall. Houston had 28 runs and 42 hits in the series against its in-state rival that won 17 of 19 against the Astros last season. The Rangers lost for the 10th time in 11 games and have dropped 18 of 21 overall. At 38-53, their .418 winning percentage is the worst in the majors — just behind Arizona and Houston, both 39-54 for a .419 mark. “Its been really tough. Its been frustrating,” outfielder Alex Rios said. “This is a season that I believe that were all going to remember in a bad way.” Dallas Keuchel (9-5), one of five candidates in Internet balloting for the final spot on the AL All-Star team, allowed four runs and eight hits over 6 2-3 innings. While it wasnt his best performance, he was happy to beat the Rangers. “Just bbecause theyve beaten us up the last couple years,” Keuchel said.dddddddddddd “Theyve been the big brother, of sort.” Darvish (8-5), who had thrown 20 consecutive scoreless innings while winning his last three home starts, gave up a season-high 10 hits and six runs. He struck out eight and needed 109 pitches to get through six innings. Against Houston at home in April, Darvish allowed one hit over eight scoreless innings. The Japanese ace also had two near no-hitters on the road against the Astros last season, one in which he retired the first 26 batters. Carlos Corporan had a two-run double in the sixth to break a 4-all tie. An inning later, Springer hit his 19th homer, a two-run shot off reliever Jason Frasor. Grossmans solo homer, about 329 feet into the right-field corner, made it 4-all with two outs in the fifth. He also had a double in the first inning and an RBI single in the third. Before getting recalled this week by the Astros, Grossman had an 18-game hitting streak at Triple-A Oklahoma City. But he was hitless in a span of 28 at-bats in the majors after going 0 for 4 on Tuesday night to start his third stint with Houston this season. Adrian Beltre extended his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI single in the Texas first. The All-Star third baseman is batting .494 (38 for 77) in his last 20 home games, and is second in the AL at .336 overall. Houston took a 2-1 lead in the second when Corporan hit a two-out double before Enrique Hernandez tripled and scored on a wild pitch. “The team is in a skid, but Im telling you, theyre playing,” Texas manager Ron Washington said. " Were not pitching very well. … We just dont have a sustainable offence to support whats going on right now." NOTES: Springer also made a running catch in the right-centre gap to end the third. … Beltre was called out on strike three in the third when he stepped out of the box but wasnt granted time. When he came to bat in the sixth, Beltre had an animated conversation with plate umpire Bill Miller. ’ ’ ’

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Bandits star John Tavares scored the 800th goal of his National Lacrosse League career on Saturday, but it was the Calgary Roughnecks who left Buffalo with a 16-13 win on the strength of four goals from Dane Dobbie. Tavares, a 45-year-old Toronto native, scored his milestone goal at 13:49 of the third quarter. He is an uncle of NHL star John Tavares, a forward with the New York Islanders. OSTERSUND, Sweden — There will be no world junior womens curling medal for Canadas Jocelyn Peterman. The Red Deer, Alta., skip was eliminated from the tournament after an 11-10 loss to Russian Anna Sidorova in Fridays tiebreaker. A win would have sent the Canadian rink into a Page playoff game and an opportunity to advance to the semifinal. “Thats not the outcome we wanted,” Peterman said. “I struggled for the first few ends, but she (Sidorova) made some really nice shots for her team.” Peterman opened the contest scoring one in the first with the hammer, but fell behind 4-1 following the second. Canada responded with two in the third, but Sidorova countered with three in the fourth and a steal of one in the fifth for an 8-3 advantage. Petermans rink pulled to within 8-6 with one in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but the Russians scored three in the eighth for an 11-6 advantage. The Canadians mounted another comeback, scoring three in the ninth to pull to within 11-9 but could only add one in the 10th to fall just short. Peterman said the second end was an important one in the game. “We were in control for that whole end, she just played a really nice shot,” she said. "We were chasing it a little bit from then on. “We came back with our deuce and we didnt feel too bad about that. Weve played a lot of games where weve come from down a lot so we knew we could at least make it a little closer.” Russia faced Sweden — 6-4 tiebreak winners over Japan — in the playoff, with the Swedes earning a 6-5 win with a steal in the 10th end. Peterman finished the round robin in a five-way tie for second with a 6-3 record. The Czech Republic had the best head-to-head record and advanced to the Page playoff against first-place Scotland, which advanced to Sundays final with a 6-5 victory. “Were a little disappointed with the way we played this week,” Peterman said. "We didnt bring our A game to all the games, so we know that if we did, we could have done a lot better, so that kind of sucks. “But overall, reflecting on the whole season, we think we did all right.” The Czech Republic and Sweden will square off in the semifinal, with the winning meeting Scotland in the tournament final. The loser takes on Russia in the bronze medal game. Peterman said her team will take some time off when it gets home, then begin preparing for a possible return to the world tournament. “It has been a really good experience and weve made a lot of new friends,” she said. "Were one of the youngest teams here and we all have two more years. “So were going to take a couple of weeks off and then get back to practising so hopefully we can do it again next year.” On the mens side, Canadian skip Brendan Bottcher will enjoy a day off before meeting Sweden in the one-versus-two Page playoff game Saturday. Bottcher finished first in the mens standings with an 8-1 record. cheap jerseys from china . cheap jerseys . LOUIS — Duke forward Jabari Parker has won the Wayman Tisdale Award, presented by the U.FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS 1. KYLE LOWRY (Raptors): This is great news for Raps fans. He was in a nice spot with demand from other teams and he cashed in quite well. Bottom line, market value sets the price point and its the cost of doing business. Hes the heart and soul of their team and was an important guy to keep, mission accomplished. This is an important point to consider – the fact that he makes more money doesnt mean hes going to be an even better player than he was last year. Its a tough thing for players who sign big deals; they feel they need to live up to the money and contract. Realistically, if he can provide them what he did last season on a consistent basis and stay healthy the next three to four years – where do I sign up? Good get even if the money is a tad bit high but again its all about right place and right time for Lowry and for the Raptors. Its a deal that makes both good basketball and organizational sense. I love the addition of Patrick Patterson as a restricted free agent to the mix as well. Hes a good young player whose best days lie ahead for him. His perimeter shooting, defence, rebounding and overall toughness are a good piece for this group. Obviously, he ended up being for the Raps what Andrea Bargnani was supposed to be yet at a much more reasonable price. Good deal. Hopefully Greivis Vasquez gets done soon as well. Fingers crossed. Off to a nice start though. Masai Ujiris surely has planned his work and is working his plan. 2. BEN GORDON (Magic): What a Country! I cant believe he got a two-year deal, even if whole money amount isnt guaranteed. Im sure if former Detroit Pistons president, Joe Dumars is walking on a beach this summer thinking about the moves that cost him his job; this guy and Charlie Villaneuvas deals are right at the top of the list. He gets another chance to resuscitate his career with Magic but Im skeptical of this one. 3. SHAUN LIVINGSTON (Warriors): Im happy for him. Hes battled back from major injury in his career and hes not the player he once was in his early Clippers days, but he has reinvented himself annd thats a testament to his work ethic and character.ddddddddddddHes a dependable pro and plays the game hard and right. Hell be a nice mature addition to Coach Steve Kerrs locker room. 4 LeBRON JAMES (Heat): Pat Rileys has to be sweating a bit here. So far no luck attracting the other pieces to compliment the King and hes evaluating his options as he should. He is legitimate by the contract he and the heat negotiated in good faith. Who knows how it will all work out with him and even a guy like Carmelo Anthony. Bottom line, guys want to get paid at the highest level as well as the mid and lower tier players. Your sales pitch as a team beyond winning is still how much cap space do you have and what percentage of it am I getting? 5. NO STATE INCOME TAX: You hear this all the time about states like Texas and Florida, that their free agent pitches have a built in competitive advantage. Heres my question; in cap-centric leagues like the NBA, NHL and NFL, I wonder why this loophole wouldnt be closed. In my opinion, the cap is set up to level the playing field and teams in states that have a distinct advantage with the net income equation have the upper hand. Not sure if this has ever been considered but my thought is based upon this advantage – why dont the leagues set the cap based upon what the money means on the back end in net income per team, so its equal. In 98 per cent of the cases youre dealing with players that are in the highest taxable tax bracket in their state or Country, so why not do the research and base the cap number (which is equal) to the after tax value in each market and even the cap that way. Again, Im not sure if its ever been discussed or if it even makes any sense, Im just thinking out loud. Its probably too complicated an issue to work on but for the life of me I cant tell you why those teams in tax friendly states gain a major advantage. Its an issue for minds much greater than mine (not saying much there!) to figure out. Probably a wasted thought but thats what Im here for! Have a GREAT weekend! ’ ’ ’

The latest on injured Avalanche forward Matt Duchene remains a mystery. On Sunday, head coach Patrick Roy said the teams leading scorer will skate at Mondays morning practice and the club will make a decision on his status for Game 6 at that point. Duchene has been out since damaging the MCL in his left knee when he ran into a teammate against San Jose on March 29. Hes been skating on his own all week, before joining the team Saturday hours before a pivotal game in a series tied at 2. Rookie Nathan MacKinnon says that knowing Duchene may return at some point is “definitely a huge momentum boost for us.” Duchene had 70 points in the regular season. Kendel Ross scored 16 points to lead the undefeated Canadians to an 89-45 rout of Venezuela at the FIBA Americas Championship on Tuesday, assuring themselves a spot in the semifinals. But after three lopsided victories, Canada knows it faces a much tougher test Wednesday in Cuba for top spot in Group A. “They play hard when they need to and when they have a lead, they kind of coast,” Canadas coach Lisa Thomaidis said of Cuba. “So we need to have some realistic impression of what theyre going to bring and overestimate what weve seen from them so far.” Kim Gaucher, Kia Nurse, and Natalie Achonwa added 12 points apiece for Canada, while Tamara Tatham grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. The world No. 9-ranked Canadians opened the tournament with a 75-37 win over Jamaica, then cruised past Chile 93-51. The 14th-ranked Cubans have won by similarly lopsided scores, while Brazil and Puerto Rico have dominated the other side of the draw. The Canadians shot 47 per cent from the field against Venezuela, outrebounding their opponent 52-25, and outscoring them 16-4 on second-chance points. Still, Thomaidis wasnt pleased with her teams performance. &quuot; We just werent very sharp, our offensive precision was not there.ddddddddddddWe didnt think we brought a lot of defensive energy," Thomaidis said. “Its one of those tough games, the result should be a foregone conclusion. However you still want to maintain that level of intensity and energy heading into our most important game, which is (Wednesday).” The lopsided games have allowed Thomaidis to rotate her roster, giving key players such as Gaucher and guard Shona Thorburn some rest. The team had talked before the tournament began about the importance of maintaining their focus when theyre not playing. “When were on the bench, you have to be engaged, whether youre bringing energy by talking to your teammates or just cheering your teammates on,” Ross said. “Thats really what you have to do, you have to stay in the game, you cant just be on the bench kind of looking around wondering whats going on in Mexico. You really have to keep yourself focused and be ready for your number to be called.” Canada is gunning for its third straight world championship appearance, and needs to finish top three in Mexico to earn a spot in the 2014 world tournament in Istanbul. The semifinals are Friday, with the medal games scheduled for Saturday. ’ ’ ’

Qatar sought to allay widespread concerns about conditions for migrant workers on World Cup building projects by detailing on Tuesday how their rights must be protected by contractors. Rights group Amnesty International called the charter a “positive, if partial” step, but the International Trade Union Confederation called it a “sham,” and complained that 2022 World Cup leaders have not demanded changes in Qatars labour laws despite mounting criticism from rights groups. Qatari organizers released the charter after being ordered by FIFA to explain by this week how working and living conditions for workers building the venues for the Middle Easts first World Cup are improving. The 50-page document fleshes out the basic welfare obligations that were published last year. Within it are the requirements for employment contracts, payment, medical care and living conditions, including the meals and bedrooms that must be provided. Employers must also allow workers to retain their passports and cover the cost of their costs to return home at the end of their contract. “In our experience enforcement (of the standards) is almost always the stumbling block,” Amnesty researcher James Lynch said in a statement. Lynch stressed that only a “relatively small proportion” of workers are covered by the charter. Only companies building World Cup venues must abide by it, rather than those with government contracts for the wider infrastructure projects that are required to handle an influx of players, fans and media. Just 38 construction workers are currently employed by World Cup organizers, building the Al Wakrah Stadium south of the capital Doha. The labour force will rapidly rise as a dozen stadiums and training camps for the 32 competing teams are built from scratch or renovated. The International Trade Union Confederation is troubled by the charters failure to address the sweltering summer working conditions when temperatures can hit 50 degrees (120F). “It promises health and safety but provides no credible enforcement,” ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow said. “It promises employment standards but gives migrant workers no rights to collectively bargain or join a trade union. It promises equality but does not provide a guarantee of a minimum wage.” The ITUC is urging the Qatari government to abolish the “kafala” employment system, which stops workers from leaving the country without written permission from employers. FIFA executive committee member Theo Zwanziger, who is working with the ITUC to resolve concerns about Qatar, will face questioning on their progress at the European Parliament in Brussels on Thursday. Hassan Al Thawadi, secretary general of the World Cup organizing committee, insisted that the tournament will be a catalyst for change in Qatar. “(It) will leave a legacy of enhanced, sustainable and meaningful progress in regards to worker welfare across the country,” Al Thawadi said. And follow TSN.ca right through Deadline Day for all the updates. Flip it and Reverse It? The Buffalo Sabres made the first big move of the pre-trade deadline season by dealing Ryan Miller and Steve Ott for Chris Stewart, Jaroslav Halak and draft picks, but they are probably far from done dealing. TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun believes the Sabres could look to flip Stewart before Wednesday. LeBrun believes the Sabres may consider Stewart as a possible fit for the teams rebuilding core, given that he has one year remaining on his contract and is still only 26. However, LeBrun countered, the offers on Stewart could also be enticing to the Sabres with the Ottawa Senators believed to be interested in the forward dating back to before Fridays blockbuster. Meanwhile, LeBrun tweeted Saturday afternoon that the Minnesota Wild are kicking the tires on goaltenders available via trade, including Halak. Pitt Stop? While Ryan Keslers availability via trade remains a contentious issue around the Canucks, the Pittsburgh Penguins might be leading the charge to try to pry the 29-year-old loose. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Reviews Rob Rossi tweeted early Saturday that the Pens are “very interested and [it] sounds like theyre on his list.” Kesler has two years remaining on his current contract at an average annual value of $5 million. Rossi expanded on his tweet in an article on Saturday, reporting that the Penguins would offer Brandon Sutter, two 2014 draft picks and the Canucks choice of deefensemen Simon Despres or Brian Dumoulin Out of Oil If this is Ales Hemskys last week in an Oiler uniform, the Czech forward appears ready for whatever comes next.dddddddddddd “It could be my last two games in this locker-room, so I better enjoy it,” the 30-year-old winger said after practice on Friday. “I want to enjoy every moment Ill spend with the guys, with my friends, with the people I know.” “Im ready for it. Im excited.” With a provincial showdown with the Flames on tap for Saturday it could provide one last battle-ground for the winger, who is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Strictly Business Cory Schneider doesnt want to see his crease-mate Martin Brodeur traded, but understands that if the 41-year-old does get moved its just part of the business of being an NHL player. “Marty is big part of this team and has been forever. Im not sure there is any player as synonymous with the franchise as Marty has been or is. So it wouldnt be just anybody leaving this team. It would be the most important player in the franchises history,” the 27-year-old netminder told The Star-Ledger. Schneider, of course, is no stranger to speculation, having endured years of rumours in Vancouver playing alongside Roberto Luongo. The way that situation played out this off-season – resulting in his relocation to New Jersey – has shown Schneider that anything is possible. “It would be difficult for everybody, but thats kind of what happens. I didnt think I was going to get traded and I did. It happens. It could happen to anybody.” ’ ’ ’

ARLINGTON, Texas — Gregg Marshall, whose Wichita State team was the first to reach the NCAA tournament undefeated in 33 years, has been selected The Associated Press coach of the year. The Shockers entered the tournament at 34-0 and as a No. 1 seed. They became the first team in NCAA mens history to win its first 35 games. They lost to Kentucky in the third round and fell short of matching Indiana in 1976 as the last unbeaten national champion. Marshall led the Shockers to a No. 2 ranking in the final poll and to the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament titles. For the fifth straight season, the Shockers won at least 25 games. Marshall received 44 votes Thursday from the same 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Tony Bennett of Virginia had 13 votes, Billy Donovan of Florida drew six and John Beilein of Michigan and Larry Brown of SMU one each. Voting ended on Selection Sunday. Kaleb Tarczewski added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats (28-2, 15-2 Pac-12), who had already clinched the regular season conference title. The Wildcats have won five straight with their last loss on Feb. 14 at archrival Arizona State. Roberto Nelson scored 25 points and Devon Collier had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Beavers (15-14, 7-10). Arizona built several leads during the game but couldnt pull far away from a feisty Oregon State team. Arizona opened the game on a 7-0 run before Oregon State responded and took a 10-9 lead on a steal and layup by Hallice Cooke at the 14:13 mark. The Wildcats gradually crept away, and an alley-oop pass from T.J. McConnell to Johnson for a dunk that put the Wildcats up 31-22 with 3:53 left in the half, their largest lead of the game. Arizona led 36-33 at halftime. The Beavers went ahead 46-44 after consecutive 3-pointers by Cooke, the latter at the 15:15 mark. Arizona went on a 7-0 run that ended with a jumper by Johnson that made it 58-51 with about 10 minutes left, but Oregonn State again responded, tying the game at 58 on a layup by Eric Moreland with 8:13 left.dddddddddddd The Wildcats forced turnovers on three straight possessions and took a 69-64 lead with 1:36 left. With 30 seconds left and the score the same, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson blocked a shot by Cooke. Hollis-Jefferson finished with 13 points and six boards. Oregon State outrebounded Arizona 43-34, only the sixth time Arizona has lost the rebounding battle this season. The Wildcats crushed the Beavers on the boards 39-24 in the teams last meeting on Feb. 9, which host Arizona won 76-54. The Wildcats forced 17 turnovers and only committed eight. Arizona won its 108th game in the last four years, the best four-year stretch in school history. Oregon State hasnt beaten a top-5 team since it upset No. 3 Arizona 70-69 in Corvallis in 2000. It hasnt beat a top-25 team in more than three years. Nelson came into the game leading the Beavers with a 20.6-point average. He is on pace to become the first Oregon State player to lead the conference in scoring since Gary Payton in 1990. TORONTO — In coach Randy Carlyles estimation, the Toronto Maple Leafs have had to make last-minute lineup decisions much more this season than usual, and the health of David Clarkson forced them into another one. With Clarkson deemed “questionable” by Carlyle to play Saturday night against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Leafs recalled tough guy Frazer McLaren from the AHLs Toronto Marlies. McLaren, who cleared waivers before the trade deadline, would be playing in his fifth post-Olympic break game if he takes Clarksons spot in the lineup. That Clarkson was still bothered by a pulled muscle in his leg which seemed to start during Fridays practice came as a surprise to Carlyle. Following the morning skate at Air Canada Centre, the veteran coach left open the possibility the Leafs could dress 11 forwards and seven defencemen or make a recall, as they did with McLaren. “Its always tough when youre missing quality players, and nobody wants to do that, but in the situation if the player is not deemed healthy by our medical staff and himself, then we have no other choice other than to make decisions,” Carlyle said. Clarkson has four goals and six assists in 43 games for Toronto after starting the season with a 10-game suspension. Those 10 points are good for 14th on the team and tied with Dave Bolland, who hasnt played since November. Captain Dion Phaneuf will play against Philadelphia as Carlyle said Friday. Phaneuf took part in the morning skate, his first time on the ice this week with teammates outside of game action. “I feel good,” Phaneuf said. “Obviously when youre not on the ice for a couple days, you want to get back, feel the puck a bit before you go right into a game.” Phaneuf, who leads the Leafs in average ice time at 24:19 a game, has played in every game this season except the two he was suspended for boarding Kevan Miller of the Boston Bruins. That included games this week against the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers. Taking some time off between games is a matter of preservation for Phaneuf. “Sometimes when you have the opportunity to rest certain things, you want to take the time to do that,” he said. "You weigh how much hockeys going to be played. “For me, it was good to be able to get those couple days to recharge and to rest a couple bumps and bruises.” More than bumps and bruises have kept Bolland and tough guy Colton Orr out. Bolland hasnt played since having a tendon on the back of his ankle sliced Nov. 2 while Orr has been out the past six games. The Leafs open a five-game road trip Monday in Anaheim, and Carlyle hopes Bolland and Orr will be available by the end of it, March 17 at Detroit. “Orrsy skated again today, so Orrsys getting close,” he said. "And with Bolland, its a situation as weve talked about before where were just waiting and biding our time and hopefully rebuilding that ankle, that area. “Hell give us the green light when he says hes ready.” whole… jerseys . The Trail Blazers lead the first-round series 3-2 entering Game 6 on Friday in Portland. A basket by Damian Lillard got the Trail Blazers within two points before James Harden stepped back and swished a 3-pointer to make it 103-98 with about three minutes left. nfl jerseys china . The pitchers agent, Bob Garber, confirmed the decision and said Oswalt would go to work for his agency, RMG Baseball. Oswalt will be vice-president of baseball operations. http://www.cheapnfljerseyschinastore.com/. Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Friday night and tightened the top of the NL Central. The Reds moved within three games of the second-place Cardinals, who have won seven of their last nine games while staying right behind the division-leading Brewers. cheap jerseys . It all paid off Friday night, when the Toronto right-hander earned his first victory since 2008 with an effective and emotional effort at Baltimore. McGowan allowed five hits over 6 1-3 innings, and the Blue Jays used two unearned runs to beat Chris Tillman and the Orioles 2-0.The Winnipeg Jets are in Chicago tonight for their fourth and final regular season game against the Blackhawks. Chicago is 3-0 against Winnipeg this season, outscoring the Jets 15-5 in those games. Jonathan Toews leads the Blackhawks with two goals and three assists. Tonights game is a 6pm ct faceoff on TSN 1290 Radio and regionally on TSN Jets TV. Neither team had a pre-game skate on Sunday morning at the United Center so the line-ups will not be known until warm-up. The (24-24-5) Jets are seventh in the Central Division with 53 points. They trail Vancouver by eight points for a Western Conference Wild Card playoff spot. The Canucks have played one less game than the Jets. Winnipeg is coming off a 5-4 overtime win last night at home against Toronto. So far this season, the Jets record is 0-5-1 when playing the second game of back-to-backs on the schedule. Over the passt six games, Ondrej Pavelecs record is 5-1 with a 1.dddddddddddd98 goals against average and .927 save percentage. Bryan Little has 11 points (three goals and eight assists) in his last nine games. The (32-9-12) Blackhawks are first in the Central Division with 76 points. They have a one-point lead on second-place St. Louis, however the Blues have two games in hand. Chicagos last two games were a 5-4 shootout loss in Detroit and a 2-1 loss in Minnesota. Their longest winless streak of the season is three games. Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane are on three-game point streaks (one goal and two assists). Sharp leads the Blackhawks with 26 goals while Kane is their assists (35) and points (59) leader. Chicagos power play is ranked third in the NHL at 22 per cent efficiency. The Jets next game is Tuesday at home against Nashville. ’ ’ ’

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a minor league contract with reliever Brandon Lyon that includes an invitation to their big league camp for spring training. The 34-year-old right-hander had a 4.98 ERA in 37 appearances with the New York Mets last year. He signed with the Boston Red Sox on July 19, making four appearances out of their Triple-A bullpen before opting out of his contract. Lyon went unsigned for the last two months of the regular season. The agreement was announced on Tuesday. cheap jerseys . DALLAS — The Dallas Stars have bought out the final year of defenceman Aaron Romes contract, a move that will give the club more salary cap space. Under the NHL collective bargaining agreement, teams were given two amnesty buyouts that must be used by the end of the month. With Tuesdays move, the Stars will pay Rome two-thirds of the $1.6 million he was set to earn next season. That money wont count against the salary cap. Rome, who signed a three-year, free-agent contract in 2012, had one assist in 25 games during an injury-plagued season with the Stars. He played once during Dallas six-game playoff loss to Anaheim. The Stars have several young defencemen who could push for playing time next season. nfl jerseys china . Park closed with a 6-under 67 for a five-shot victory over Suzann Pettersen in a Ladies European Tour event. NEW YORK — The NBA gave J.R. Smith a warning — and then a $50,000 fine when he ignored it. The league penalized the New York Knicks guard again Wednesday, this time for “recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct” after he tried to untie an opponents sneaker for a second time in two games. Smith untied Mavericks forward Shawn Marions shoe while they were standing next to each other during a free throw attempt at Dallas on Sunday and was warned not to repeat the act by the league office. Coach Mike Woodson had said before Tuesdays home game against Detroit that Smith shouldnt be doing things like that, but the reserve guard then tried it again on Greg Monroe during a free throw attempt — with league disciplinarian Rod Thorn in attendance. “Ive always said I dont condone things that I know you shouldnt do and no, Im not happy about this, because again, he was warned, he comes back and he makes the samee mistake and its not right,” Woodson said during a radio interview with ESPN New York.dddddddddddd “Im going to address it tomorrow when he comes in here for work, because its unacceptable, I mean it really is. I mean, its unprofessional. Thats the only word I can use, or two words. Its just, you cant do that. You just cannot do that.” But Smith does keep doing things like that in whats becoming an expensive season for the reigning Sixth Man of the Year. Smith was suspended without pay for the first five games of the season, costing him about $253,000 of his $5.6 million salary, after violating terms of the leagues anti-drug program. He was then fined $25,000 in November for using hostile and inappropriate language toward the Pistons Brandon Jennings on his Twitter account. Smith is shooting under 35 per cent from the field and averaging 11.3 points, a drop of about seven per game from last season. ’ ’ ’

PORTLAND, Ore. - Damian Lillard had 32 points and the short-handed Portland Trail Blazers rallied to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 108-97 on Sunday night. Thomas Robinson had 14 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for Portland, which won its second straight after a three-game slump. Kevin Love scored 31 for Minnesota, which had won three in a row. It was Loves franchise-best fifth straight game with 30 or more points. The Blazers played without All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who missed his third straight game with a groin injury. After trailing by as many as 18 points in the first half, Nicolas Batums fast-break layup gave Portland an 84-80 lead going into the fourth quarter. After Robinsons basket, Victor Claver dunked to extend the lead to 88-80. It was more of the same as the Blazers continued to attack. Robinson, who sparked the second-half comeback, blocked Corey Brewers shot on one end, Claver grabbed the rebound and Will Barton broke free for a dunk that gave Portland a 92-83 lead. Lillards 3-pointer made it 105-91 with 4:14 left, and Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman took Love out with 3:36 to go. The Timberwolves were coming off a 121-104 victory at Utah on Saturday night. Love led the way with 37 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for his first career triple-double. Love presented a significant matchup problem for the Blazers with Aldridge sidelined by a left groin strain. Aldridge, who averages a team-high 23.9 points and 11.4 rebounds, is expected to be re-evaluated in the next few days. Aldridge wasnt the only Blazer hurting: The team was also without forward Joel Freeland because of a right knee sprain and centre Meyers Leonard because of a left ankle sprain. Love finished with 10 rebounds. The Timberwolves continued to miss centre Nikola Pekovic because of a sore right ankle and Kevin Martin because of a fractured bone in his left thumb. Love got off to a fast start with seven points as the Timberwolves built an early 18-9 lead. By the end of the opening quarter, Love had 13. Minnesota extended the lead to 43-28 early in the second quarter on Shabazz Muhammads short jumper. The Timberwolves stretched the lead to 52-34 after a short jumper and a pair of free throws from J.J. Barea. Portland then got back into the game with an 18-8 run capped by Robinsons two layups and Nicolas Batums 3-pointer, closing the gap to 60-52 at the half. A pair of 3-pointers from Lillard and Batum put Portland in front 74-73. It was short-lived and Love drained a 3 to give Minnesota an 80-76 lead before the Blazers furious fourth-quarter surge. Portland was coming off a 102-94 victory over the Jazz on Friday night. Lillard had 28 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter. NOTES: Love is from Lake Oswego, just outside of Portland. … Adelman coached the Blazers from 1989-94, guiding the team to two Western Conference titles. … Love has at least 25 points and 10 rebounds in 10 straight games, the longest run of 25-10 games since Shaquille ONeal had 13 in a row in 2001. … Love has an NBA-high 47 double-doubles. Guerrero also threw out the first pitch on opening day at Angel Stadium, and new Angels hitting coach Don Baylor had to be helped off the field after injuring his right leg while catching it. Guerrero signed the contract on the field before the game, getting a loud ovation from the Anaheim crowd when he put pen to paper. The slugging outfielder then threw the first pitch to Baylor, the only other league MVP in Angels history. But Baylor couldnt get up after making the catch, unable to put weight on his leg. Two Angels staff members had to help him off the field. The former Rockies and Cubs manager was taken to a hospital for further tests while the Angels faced the Seattle Mariners.dddddddddddd The 39-year-old Guerrero hasnt played in the majors since 2011. He spent six of his 16 major league seasons with the Angels from 2004-09, winning the 2004 AL MVP award and earning four of his nine All-Star selections. Guerrero began his career with eight seasons for the Montreal Expos and finished with single years in Texas and Baltimore. He played briefly in the minors for Toronto in 2012, and was out of baseball last year. Guerrero leads all Dominican major leaguers with 2,590 hits, also finishing with 449 homers and 1,496 RBIs. He had 12 seasons with at least 25 homers. He never batted lower than .290 in his final 15 seasons despite a well-known penchant for swinging at balls outside the strike zone. Guerrero hit above .300 for 12 straight years. ’ ’ ’

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry Fraser wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hey Kerry, As a Sens fan, Ive watched about as much poor officiating as I can take. Tuesday nights debacle in the Sens/Bruins game has put me over the edge. Dan ORourke has for a third time in the past three weeks, directly affected the outcome of a Sens game with his obvious bias. My concern, now that it has become so apparent, is what if any recourse does the Sens organization have to get to the bottom of this? Does the league fine or suspend officials that can be shown to be unprofessional in their work? Can the team request that a problem official be removed from the crews that are to do their remaining games? I would love to hear your take on this, because this situation is getting out of hand. Having watched most games over the past three seasons, I cant understand how the Sens are consistently the highest penalized team in the league. It is bordering on the ridiculous. Jamie in Ottawa -— Kerry, As an Ottawa Senators fan, I watch practically every game and the refereeing in Senators games is blatantly one-sided. I am not one to whine and feel like the world is against the team I cheer for, but the penalty differential facts are there and from what Ive seen, I am losing respect for officials, no offense. There is always talk about bringing in more digitized officiating and I used to be against it, however the officiating this year in the NHL and against Ottawa particularly, seems to be “game-altering”, which is certainly not what we want. Chris Phillips was called for covering the puck in the crease which led to a penalty shot for the opponent. He clearly slid the puck to Anderson and did not cover his hand over the puck. Another example is the referee calling Erik Karlsson a “diver”. First of all, this is completely unprofessional, and second, Karlsson has one diving call in his career (far from being labeled as a diver) There needs to be more action taken against officials and “poor acts of officiating”. This game is a game, but many peoples lives depend on the successes and failures of their respective careers and referees can have a huge impact on that. Anytime the officiating takes away from the “fair and true fate” of the outcome, then I consider it deemed “poor officiating” and action should be taken. I am by no means suggesting that officiating is “rigged” or “fixed”, however I think it would be naive to think that referees dont have biases towards or against certain players and teams. Players and even coaches get punished for their actions in a game, so why not officials? What makes referees above the game? There needs to be some form of “challenge system” or a “video official” which can correct any calls or missed calls during the course of a game. This would make for a more accurate and precise game and who wouldnt want that? What are your thoughts, Kerry? Sincerely, Greg Pierce in Fredericton, NB -— Hey Kerry, Curious after watching the Boston vs. Ottawa game about how officiating is reviewed by the league during the season. IMHO, the penalties that the Sens received were no doubt penalties, but what struck me after the game and from what I can see struck the Sens coach as well is the perceived non-calls against the Bruins throughout the game. Coincidentally it was the same official that called one of the Sens players a diver! So my question is not about each non-call and why it was/was not a penalty, my question is what does the NHL do in regards to officiating in all games throughout the year? Do officials get questioned on why or why not a call was made, how they handled certain situations? In other words are they held accountable for their actions in efforts to improve the level of officiating? What happens when there is simply no explanation for a call? Peter in Ottawa -— Hi Kerry, Seriously, how is it that a team is nearly a whole game minus when it comes to power play minutes for and against? As a Sens fan, youve got to wonder what is going on. Is the league fixing games? Are the refs unprofessional and taking their personal feelings out on a team? Im talking about a game against the Bruins where the Sens have four penalty kills and the Bruins have none. Im talking about the road trip west where it could easily be argued that we saw a single ref cause them to lose two games in a row. Im talking about the lopsided plus/minus for penalties throughout the year. Im talking about blatant head shots against Alfredsson that went unpunished. Ive seen games over the years when the Sens have had all the power plays and have been embarrassed. There is no way one team in a single game should be given three, four, five power plays in a game and the other team gets none. There is no way a single team should be down by that many minutes in penalties for or against. There has got to be something going on in the NHL. If I had the money of Melnyk, Id offer to pay any fine MacLean can get for screaming at the league/refs for the blatant bias. As I only have the money that I have, I will probably stop watching NHL altogether as if a fix isnt in, then the quality of the refereeing is disgusting. Can you honestly say you can watch the broadcast (let alone what isnt shown outside the camera angle) and say the Bruins didnt deserve a penalty or that any team should have such a lopsided plus minus in penalties? Tim from Ottawa -— An open response to ALL fans that think referees display bias against teams and individual players: A very serious accusation of bias is being made by Ottawa Senators fans in each of the above questions against the officials and in particular referee, Dan ORourke. This largely stems from a game in Anaheim when Sens coach Paul McLean reported that referee ORouke allegedly told him that Eric Karlsson was a “diver”. While I dealt with that incident at length in a previous column, it appears the perception created from this incident has become reality for many Ottawa fans and perhaps even the players and team management. Let me attempt to set the record straight. Over my many years as a professional referee, I have been cussed at in the most vile language imaginable by players and coaches, spat upon (one time directly into my open mouth from close range by a player in the IHL), physically attacked, had a helmet thrown at me by Theo Fleury, a stick launched like a javelin off the LA Kings bench by then coach Tom Webster, ducked a water bottle thrown at my head by Wings captain Reed Larson and countless pucks that not so accidentally came in my direction. None of these things infuriated me more than being called a “cheater” (biased) or “gutless (coward)!” Those highly offensive terms questioned my integrity, which I held above all else, in addition to my manhood and courage. When accused of either, I responded immediately with a misconduct penalty in addition to anything else that was allowed within the rules. When your questions centered on the integrity of the officiating staff or any particular referee, I took it very seriously. I watched the entire Boston-Ottawa game from start to finish. I closely observed the game, making honest and objective notes no differently than the NHL Officiating Department would do if such claims were initiated by a team for investigation. (NHL teams do make requests of the Officiating Department to review particular calls or a referees performance that they deem unsatisfactory. This request is usually by the team general manager to the Sr. VP of Officiating – presently Terry Gregson. A review and full report is then issued to the team general manager.) This not “Fraser sticking up for the officials once again,” as some of you have claimed. Remember my premise and promise to you in crafting this article is threefold “Honesty, Fairness and Opinionated!” As such, there have been times when my honest assessment has not agreed with the officials. Trust me, at times such as this, I have not endeared myself to my former colleagues. I accept their disappointment (most often disdain) as the price I must pay for being objective and honest in my new role. In the following review of the game, I find absolutely no evidence of bias on the part of the officiating crew in either the penalties that were assessed or their judgment on non-calls. If there was in fact a bias against the Ottawa team by the referee, the outcome and judgment demonstrated on the following plays would have been much different. This is what I observed: First Period: 9:50 Good non-call; Brad Marchand (Ott) breaks in on goal and is pursued by an Ottawa defenceman. Marchand toe-picks and falls but complains he was fouled. Contact did not cause Marchand to fall. 9:51 Minor penalty instead of penalty shot; Sergei Gonchar (Ott) is assessed a hooking minor for taking down Marchand after receiving a quick breakaway pass. Gonchar hooks from a position behind Marchand and a penalty shot could easily have been awarded instead of a minor. (Chara scores on PP) 12:58 Missed Call; Ott Gonchar strikes and takes down David Krejci (Bos) with a hard slash to the legs. Referee Martell turning/avoiding player contact in the corner near the play. Back ref, ORourke does not impose himself as back referee to make the call against Ottawa from a long distance away. 17:30 Good non-call; Joe Corvo (Bos) steps up and delivers a hard, clean, open-ice body check on Kyle Turris (Ott) at the centre red line. Ref ORourke looked on and correctly ruled no penalty on the play. Second Period: 8:41 *Missed Call; Milan Lucic (Bos) steps up late and boards Eric Condra inside the blue line. The puck was being battled for up the wall and referee ORourke was focused on the puck action and would not have seen the hit delivered by Lucic from his obstructed view. Back referee responsibility. *This was the only infraction in the game that I would have called against Boston. This one was missed! 15:37 *Non call/Missed call; Nick Foligno (Ott) does a wide cut path with skates and trips Peverley. Could have very easily been deemed a trip – referee ORourke viewed the play from close proximity and chose otherwise. No penalty to Ottawa assessed. Third Period: 00:46 Obvious trip called; Erik Karlsson trips Tyler Seguin on break toward the Ottawa goal. 5:20 Good non call; Sergei Gonchar (Ott) clamps on stick of Milan Lucis (Bos) in the corner and in clear view of referee ORourke. Gonchar does a catch and release of the stick. Referee ORourke does not overreact and correctly allows play to continue without assessing a holding the stick penalty to Gonchar. 7:56 Diving Non Call on Chris Neil (Ott); Shortly after Dennis Seidenberg scored the fourth and ultimate game-winning goal with a centre ice slapshot, Ottawa attempted to draw a power play. Chris Kelly delivered a light, short cross-check shove to the upper arm of Chris Neil as the two players converged at center ice. Neil threw himself to the ice in an obvious embellishment attempt to draw a penalty. This is likely a case where the scrutiny referee ORourke might be enduring from the Karlsson diving report resulted in a non-call to Chris Neil. Given the pressure any referee would feel following a highly publicized incident, he would not look to provoke or draw further attention by making a call of this nature; warranted or otherwise. If referee ORourke held bias or contempt for the Ottawa Senators, this was a call he could step up and make ultimately rubbing salt in a fresh wound. That is not the case, folks! 12:50 Non call on Ottawa; Nick Foligno stabs at the puck and gets mostly the leg of Adam McQuaid (Bos) but a little puck. Referee ORourke was close by and deemed it not to be a penalty to the Ottawa player, likely given the fact that some contact with the puck was made. 17:12 Tripping Penalty to Ottawa: Nick Foligno used his active stick to take a bad penalty deep in the attacking zone when he pushed the leg of Rich Peverley while he was turning with the puck. The leg pressure caused Peverley to trip and fall. Even though Foligno complained, this was a penalty. 19:56 Aggressive Cross-Check Penalty; Jason Spezza let his frustration get the better of him and delivered a hard cross-check to the back of Johnny Boychuk. Obvious penalty but one that counts in the stats as number of penalties assessed to the Ottawa Senators. In the final review of the officiating in this game, there is just one Bruins penalty that went uncalled/undetected (Lucic boarding). On the other side of the tally sheet, I observed five plays committed by the Ottawa players that could very well have been deemed penalties to support your theory of bias. (Gonchar slash, Foligno skate trip, Gonchar stick hold, Neil dive, Foligno trip on McQuaid). There were several good non-calls in this game for both sides where the referees utilized good judgment and did not overreact. In answer to your questions as to how one team (Ottawa) could receive multiple penalty calls against while the Bruins were not deemed guilty of any, I offer you the same answer I gave to coach Bob Hartley one night in Colorado. Hartley informed me that his Colorado Avalanche had just taken their fifth penalty in a row while the other team had none. I responded to Bob that while math was never my best subject, if they were to commit the next infraction, it would make No. 6. I have had games where one team received all the penalties and their opponents none. Referees do not act as accountants to balance the books. It is not their job to make sure each team receives an equal number of penalties by the end of the game. This conspiracy theory has gotten way out of hand. Mistakes are made in a game and they most often result from a deficient sight line when ruling on a play, just like the penalty shot that was called in error against Chris Phillips. Please believe me when I tell you they are honest mistakes. Each official takes his responsibility to uphold the integrity of the game very seriously. Please swear at me but dont call me (or my former colleagues) “cheaters” (biased) or “gutless.” There is no place for either in a striped jersey. Hilton Elite Jersey Womens . The NFL club and Rogers Communications announced Wednesday theyve put the beleaguered Bills Toronto Series — which features Buffalo playing exhibition and regular-season games at Rogers Centre — on hold for at least a year.PRETORIA, South Africa – Months before he killed his girlfriend, Oscar Pistorius said he drew his gun and went into “combat mode” after thinking he heard the noise of an intruder at his home, which turned out to be a washing machine, a South African guns expert testified Monday at the athletes murder trial. Sean Rens also said Pistorius wanted to buy seven more guns in 2012 — to add to the 9 mm pistol he already owned for self-defence — and asked the firearm trainer to procure them for him under a gun collectors permit. The guns included a semi-automatic assault rifle, three shotguns, another self-loading rifle and two Smith & Wesson handguns. Rens, the manager of the International Firearm Training Academy in Walkerville, south of Johannesburg, produced one invoice that included five of the guns and nearly 600 hundred rounds of ammunition made out in Pistorius name. That total price came to nearly $5,000 and Pistorius had already paid around $4,500 of the bill, the invoice showed. The order was cancelled after Pistorius shot dead girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in early 2013, Rens said. The remaining two guns were contained on a second invoice, the firearm dealer said. Rens also said he had many conversations about firearms with Pistorius, who is accused of murder in Steenkamps shooting death on Valentines Day last year. Rens said the double-amputee runner had “a great love and enthusiasm” for guns. Rens met Pistorius in 2012, he testified, and trained with him at a gun range. In one conversation, Pistorius described how he was startled by a noise at home and decided to clear the house by drawing his gun and checking rooms, according to Rens. “He went into what we call code red or combat mode,” Rens said. “When he came to the source of the noise, it was the laundry or something.” Pistorius tweeted about the incident in November 2012: “Nothing like getting home to hear the washing machine on and thinking its (sic) an intruder to go into full combat recon mode into the pantry!” Pistorius said he killed Steenkamp by accident before dawn on Feb. 14, 2013, shooting her through a toilet door after mistaking her for an intruder in his home. Prosecutors say he killed her intentionally after an argument and also questioned Rens on Pistorius firearm training. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel asked Rens to describe how Pistorius was quizzed on how to handle a firearm in various scenarios, for example when two unidentified men approach the house of a gun owner; then when they break into the house, begin to steal belongings and order the gun owner to leave; and if the men threaten to kill the gun owner, who is behind a security gate in the house.dddddddddddd. In each case, Rens said, Pistorius was asked if it was OK to fire at the men and Pistorius correctly answered “No.” Pistorius correctly said he was only entitled to shoot at them if they advanced on him with a gun, according to Rens. Nel was trying to show that Pistorius flouted the regulations that he knew when he shot Steenkamp. Pistorius says he fired because he thought he was under threat. Rens said he was introduced to Pistorius in May 2012, a few months before the runner made history by competing at the London Olympics. Pistorius first wanted Rens to find a “specific” gun for him, Rens testified, a Smith & Wesson 500 revolver handgun. Rens also listed the other guns Pistorius was hoping to procure under a collectors license. They were a .38-calibre Smith & Wesson revolver, the civilian version of a Vector .223-calibre assault rifle used by South African police, another self-loading semi-automatic rifle and three shotguns. Pistorius applied to the South African polices National Firearms Centre for the licenses for six of these guns on Jan. 22, 2013, according to the centres records, just three weeks before he shot dead Steenkamp in his home using his 9 mm Parabellum pistol, which he already licensed for self-defence. Pistorius applications were not processed and were instead “sent back” four days after he killed Steenkamp, officials at the South African polices National Firearms Center told The Associated Press last year. In later testimony Monday, police photographer Bennie van Staden spoke about the images he took when he arrived at Pistorius house on the night of the killing. One photograph of the runner, taken in his garage, showed unexplained scuff marks on his bloodied prosthetic limbs. Another from the Paralympians bedroom showed a box with a label that said “Testis compositum.” The runners representatives have identified the substance as an herbal remedy used for “muscle recovery.” A product by that name also is sold as a sexual enhancer and contains the testicles, heart and embryo of pigs, among other ingredients. Some retailers also say it can be used to treat fatigue. Also found in the bedroom was a box with the label “Coenzyme compositum” as well as syringes and needles. Steenkamps mother, June, was in the Pretoria courtroom for a second time Monday but had left by the time van Staden was describing some photos being displayed of the bloody bathroom scene where her daughter was shot. June Steenkamp last attended the trial on the opening day on March 3. ’ ’ ’

(SportsNetwork.com) – The Toronto Raptors hit the road for the first time this season, heading to Atlanta to take on the Hawks. The Raptors opened their 2013-14 campaign with a 93-87 home win over Atlantic Division rivals, the Boston Celtics. It was a nice all-around effort for Toronto. Rudy Gay led the way with 19 points, followed by 13 apiece from Amir Johnson and DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry chipped in with 11. Jonas Valanciunas, a preseason choice for Most Improved Player, only scored eight points, but pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked two shots. Tyler Hansbrough, who signed with the Raptors in the offseason, blocked three shots and grabbed 12 boards as the Raptors slaughtered the Celtics by 15 on the glass. The Raptors clobbered Boston 28-11 in the second quarter, but the Celtics bounced back with a 34-22 second quarter. The lull left a bad taste in head coach Dwane Caseys mouth. “I thought we grinded it out when it got tough and they made their run,” said Casey. “I like the way our guys bounced back, but we should have never put ourselves in that hole.” The Hawks meanwhile are looking to get their first victory of the season in their home opener. They fell to the Dallas Mavericks, 118-109, in Dallas on Wednesday. It marked the first time they opened a season without Josh Smith since the 2003-04 season. Jeff Teague, who was re-signed in the offseason, had 24 points and missed a double-double by one assist. It wasnt all roses for Teague as he committed six turnovers. Paul Millsap, the prize free agent who will replace Smith, had 20 points in his Atlanta debut. DeMarre Carroll (14) and Al Horford (11) scored in double figures as starters and Cartier Martin, another free-agent newcomer, netted a whopping 17 points in less than 17 minutes of action. The offense worked fine for the Hawks on Wednesday, it was the other side of the ball that was a struggle. The Mavericks scored 118 points, shot 57 percent from the field and 45.8 percent from long range. “We played well at times, but give them credit for playing better longer,” said new Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer. “Weve got to get a lot better. Were not going to be successful if thats the kind of defense (we play).” The Hawks have taken 13 of the last 16 contests between the two squads, although the Raptors bested them the last time the teams met in Atlanta last season. TORONTO — The Ontario government is honouring the late Sarah Burke by dedicating a highway to the freestyle skiing pioneer. Highway 93 will be known as the Sarah Burke Memorial Highway. The road runs for 24 kilometres through Simcoe County, the region where Burke was born and raised. “Thats a great idea,” said Chloe Dufour-Lapointe, Canadas silver medallist in freestyle moguls at the Sochi Olympics. “She was such a great skier, everything that you heard about her was only positive, a girl who smiles.” “A perfect inspiration for young girls,” added Chloes sister Justine, who won moguls gold in Sochi. The 29-year-old Burke, who was born in Barrie, Ont., and grew up in Midland, died after a training accident in Utah in January 2012. Burke was a four-time X Games champion and a driving force behind the inclusion of halfpipe and slopestyle in the Olympics. The events made their Olympic debut last month in Sochi. “The Sarah Burke Memorial Highway will provide a lasting reminder of her accomplishments,” Premier Kathleen Wynne said Wednesday. Burkes teammates honoured her in Sochi by spreading her ashes on the Olympic halfpipe, high on a mountain above it and near the Olympic rings in the athletes village. Mikael Kingsbury, who won a silver moguls medal for Canada in Sochi, called the highway dedication “very cool.” “She was an awesome woman,” he said. “I had the chance to meet her the summer before she passed away. The sport misses her and she was a great example for anyone. She deserves that highway.” . Gut temporarily relinquished the overall lead to Maria Hoefl-Riesch at the Alberta resort after the German won downhill races Friday and Saturday. Guts victory Sunday put her back atop the overall standings. “Its the first time Im in the top three in the overall, so its a pretty new thing for me,” Gut said. "I just have to stay focused on my skiing and not starting thinking about points. “If I starting thinking about points, I will start getting nervous and not ski the way I can. Today I knew I had to ski and this is what I did. Its cool to know when you have to ski, I can be in the top in Lake Louise.” Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein was second and Anna Fenninger of Austria finished third for the second straight day. Hoefl-Riesch was 19th in super-G and trails Gut in the overall standings by 41 points. Marie-Michele Gagnon of Lac-Etchemin, Que., was the top Canadian in 10th. Larisa Yurkiw of Owen Sound, Ont., missed a gate and did not finish. The World Cup Lake Louise was the scene of Vonns first races since crashing and severely injuring her right knee in super-G at the world championships in February. The reigning Olympic downhill champion tore two ligaments in her knee and broke a bone in her leg. Vonns comeback was on track until she partially tore a reconstructed anterior cruciate ligament while training in Colorado last month. The 29-year-old owns a record 14 World Cup victories at Lake Louise, but Vonn was 40th in the first downhill before jumping to 11th on Saturday and then fifth Sunday. “I think it was a huge step in the right direction,” Vonn said. “I know I can win again.” Vonn needs more surgery and intends to postpone it until after the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Chasing a fifth career overall World Cup title this season is out of the question with her knee in a tenuous state. Vonn is concentrating on defending her title in Sochi now. She must decide how many races she can do between now and February to accomplish that. “I do need a couple more starts,” Vonn said. "I want to make sure I get on the podium at least once if not win before going into Sochi. I really want to have that in my back pocket. "Im ready for Sochi. I may race one or two races. I really have to look at the program with my coaches and come up with a game plan. Maybe a couple more starts, but I really want to focus on Sochi and take the risk away from any long-term damage on my knee. “Not very much ACL left is pretty hard-core. I give myself a little bit of credit. Im not going to give up and Im going to be in Sochi and fighting for my medal.” Gagnon, a slalom specialist, diddnt race the Lake Louise downhills.dddddddddddd She competed in super-G to get work in speed events. Gagnon will represent Canada in the super combined event — the combined times of a slalom and a downhill — in Sochi. Gagnon was nevertheless pleased with a third top-10 result this season in as many disciplines. She placed fifth in the season-opening slalom in Levi, Finland, and 10th in a giant slalom in Soelden, Austria. The 24-year-old helicoptered her pole around her head in celebration when she crossed the finish line Sunday. “Im definitely a slalom ninja,” Gagnon said. "I was really surprised. I charged and I didnt know what it would get me, but at the same time I know my technique is improving and giant slalom and slalom is pretty strong now and its looking good now. “Its carrying onto speed events and thats really exciting. It shows I can use the speed side to my advantage a little bit better.” The womens World Cup races followed a mens downhill and super-G at Lake Louise. Canadas skiers left their home races this year with three top-10 results, but no medals. Canadians stood on the podium nine times between 2006 and 2009 with the last medal a downhill bronze by Emily Brydon. Yurkiw was seventh in the first womens downhill, Erik Guay of Mont-Tremblant finished eighth in the mens downhill and Calgarys Jan Hudec was 10th in the mens super-G. Hudec, Guay and Vancouvers Manuel Osborne-Paradis qualified for nomination to the Olympic team with top-12 results at Lake Louise. Yurkiw needs another top 12 to reach the criteria set by Alpine Canada. She was dropped from the Canadian ski team after last season. Yurkiw says she raised about $150,000 on her own to pay for her summer ski camps in Europe and for her coaching and training expenses. “Shes on a roll right now and I hope she can carry it on through the next races in Europe,” said Paul Kristofic, Alpine Canadas vice-president of sport. "Well lend a hand and cheer her on towards her goals absolutely. “Today with Mich, thats a testament to the momentum she has in all events right now. Shes been skiing really well with tremendous speed. Shes definitely a contender in the combined event. Doing some speed is critical for that.” Yurkiw was to board a flight Sunday for St. Moritz, Switzerland, where she and Gagnon will race a super-G on Saturday. Gagnon will also compete in a giant slalom there. Own The Podium doles out taxpayer money to sport federations based on the ability of their athletes to win medals. OTP is spending $2,788,000 on Canadas ski team in 2013-14, which ranks third behind the money going to speedskating and freestyle skiing. Since the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C., OTP has provided just over $7 million to the alpine ski team, which is fourth behind speed skating, freestyle skiing and snowboarding. ’ ’ ’

ASHBURN, Va. – The Washington Redskins have signed Jerry Rice Jr., son of the Hall of Fame receiver. Rice is an undrafted free agent out of UNLV. He caught 11 passes for 86 yards and one touchdown last year in his only season with the Rebels. Rice is 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds. He previously played at UCLA before transferring to UNLV. Rice had tryouts with the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers this off-season. The Redskins also waived cornerback Blake Sailors. The Bobcats (2-2) trailed 35-23 early in the second quarter, but cut the lead to 42-40 at halftime. Charlotte outscored Cleveland 32-17 in the third quarter to go ahead 72-59 and pulled away. cheap jerseys .J. — The New York Giants are not only back in the playoff hunt with a four-game winning streak, theyre calling the plays that get them those wins. jerseys from china .Y. - The Buffalo Sabres signed forward Nicolas Deslauriers to a two-year contract on Monday. What made the 85 Jays extra special was the relative dearth of mercenaries. The eventual 1992/1993 championship squads will always have a place in our memories and civic pride, but the teams were filled with free agent assassins. Those 1980s powder blue warriors claim a place a little deeper, a little less diminished by time, because we were emotionally invested in each players trajectory. A Toronto team hasnt been built that way in a long time.(*Authors Note: Before I cue the obvious comparison, let me state plainly for the record: I am a fan of the Toronto Basketball Club but I HATE THE NAMERAPTORS”. I will suppress my urge to call them by their eventual, rightful name — the Toronto Towers — just to avoid confusion. But understand, every time I type “Raptors”, I die a little.)Even in the face of this linguistic predicament, these Raptors have won me over. They are thriving in a delightfully familiar manner, with a buoyant, tough-minded, youthful sense of potential. Like a devoted dog, thought lost for days, scratching at our doorstep impossibly, exhausted, muddied…could it be? Could these upstart Raptors be the generational descendants of the 1985 Jays?Lets ask the pertinent questions, get out the red pen, and assign the grades.Where in the teams history does the season fall?85 BLUE JAYS: A ripe scenario coupled a weary, winner-less town with a franchise still relatively fresh in its ninth season. Mired in expansion doldrums for its first half decade, in 1982, the Blue Jays began an ascent from seventh to sixth place (of a seven-team division). In 1983, it moved into 4th place, winning 89 games, a feat replicated in 1984. 1985 was something new. The club won 99 games (a .615 winning percentage) — more victories than the future World Series teams — and it would stand until today as the greatest record in team history. No Blue Jays, Raptors or Maple Leafs team has had a better winning percentage since the 1934/35 Leafs (30 wins in a 48-game season).14 RAPTORS: This particular comparison would have lined up better for the Wince (not a typo) Carter-era team, had it made good on its promise in 2001, during the teams sixth season. Now 19 years old, the Raptors arent so green. Still, Torontos weariness from being mired in a decades-long losing streak across all major team sports, engulfs the city as it did back then. Further compelling the argument for similarity, is the Raptors current 45-32 record (a .584 winning percentage), which is the best in franchise history.COMPARISON GRADE: C+How skilled and well-loved are the players, and how do they compare with the talent in the league?85 BLUE JAYS: No surprise the best regular season team in Blue Jays history was arguably the most talented. Stacked with classic Jays in their primes, which included starters Dave Stieb and Jimmy Key, emerging closer Tom Henke, the best young outfield in baseball in Lloyd Moseby, George Bell and Jesse Barfield, and eventually-iconic infielders Tony Fernandez and Ernie Whitt, each one was either raised through the system or had their first taste of big league success in Toronto. The city got to watch the talent grow. To that end, not a single player made a million dollars in 1985. All Star Jimmy Key made $131,000. Tom Henke would get votes for MVP…on a $60,000 stipend. The league competition was also first-rate — peep the opposing lineups — as the American League was on the upswing, with Kansas City poised to claim the ALs third consecutive title (the AL would win 8 of 11 going forward).14 RAPTORS: The competition is, uh, less fierce. Beyond the general talent deficit in todays NBA (a column Ill be publishing soon), the Raptors Eastern Conference is particularly woeful. Despite Miamis recent prosperity, the East has won only 5 of the past 15 titles, and will be sending at least one sub.500 team to the big dance this year (and possibly two). In the West, Memphis could finish 50-32 and still miss the postseason.Putting aside the lesser competition, a different story emerges. Like those early Jays, the Raptors have players worth rallying around. Homegrown DeMar DeRozan, Terrence Ross and Jonas “Wasaga” Valanciunas are legit NBA starters capturing the imaginations of wide-eyed fans. Kyle Lowry and Amir Johnson play the game hard and are easy to root for, as is the surprisingly deep bench. The teams burgeoning continuity is the key ingredient as it was with the Jays: fans getting to root as their local talent grows and matures and succeeds (Gallay derisively glares towards south Florida). Even with the team headed towards their greatest season yet, not a single Raptor is even making a modest ten million dollars a year. (A tumbleweed blows across the screen.)COMPARISON GRADE: C+How were the Leafs, arbiters of the citys sports fortunes, doing at the same time?85 BLUE JAYS: As the 1985 baseball season was kicking off, the NHL season was winding down. Mercifully. The Leafs would finish 20-52-8, the worst season in franchise history (before or since). No surprise. They hadnt posted a winning record in six years. Russ Courtnall, Al Iafrate, Gary Leeman and Steve Thomas were rookies whhich gave the team hope, and they would make the playoffs the following year.dddddddddddd. (In 1986, the Maple Leafs qualified by winning a shameful 25 of 80 games because 16 of 21 teams made the playoffs. Not making the playoffs was the NHL equivalent of being picked last in gym.)14 RAPTORS: Similarly, the past several years have not been kind. After a team record seven consecutive seasons outside the playoff ranks, the blue and white made the postseason last year — defying the advanced metrics — but look to be on the outside once again in 2014. There is hope for the future despite a tumultuous plunge in the final months. But hey, lets not nitpick too much, in both eras the Leafs werent in the playoffs, hadnt had much success in the preceding years, and no sober fan in the Big Smoke had any illusions that the Cup was changing downtown addresses soon.COMPARISON GRADE: BHow confident are fans in the coaching staff and front office?85 BLUE JAYS: Bobby Cox — a Hall of Famer as of July 27, 2014 — was the manager. He took a mediocre team in 1982 and turned it into the best team in the league. He had done it before in Atlanta. He would do it again in Atlanta. He would win Manager of the Year in 1985, and though his departure upset fans, he was offered a ton of money and the GM job he coveted. The 44-year old Cox and GM Pat Gillick — who would ultimately put together the talent for back to back World Series wins — were as savvy a tandem as the city had seen. Most importantly, they had our confidence.14 RAPTORS: 56-year old coach Dwane Casey grew up in Kentucky, just an eight hour drive from where Bobby Cox—okay, Im gonna stop. Direct comparisons wont work here. Casey did not arrive in Toronto with Coxs pedigree, though he also had one prior championship ring, as an assistant on the 2011 Dallas Mavericks. Hes made strides each season and the team is proudly a shadow of his no-nonsense, tough-minded attitude. The city likes him, the players trust him. He has a legitimate shot to duplicate Coxs feat and take home Coach of the Year (though my vote would narrowly go to Jeff Hornacek in Phoenix, because I do not understand how the Suns are doing what they are doing). Two more words to add to this section: Rudy Gay. General Manager Masai “Gillick” Ujiri, 2013s NBA Executive of the Year in Denver, has been masterful in his first season at the helm, as demonstrated by the Sacramento overhaul. History will unfurl each mans ultimate place, but the city is rallying around both, and both are succeeding. Most importantly, they have our confidence.COMPARISON GRADE: A-What was going on in Toronto during the season in question?85 BLUE JAYS: In the spring and summer of 1985, Torontonians were preparing for a mayoral election, still several months away. A longtime incumbent, who refused to celebrate the Gay Pride Parade, would be put to the test by a variety of challengers. Ultimately, reigning Mayor Art Eggleton would win out.14 RAPTORS: In the spring and summer of 2014, Torontonians are preparing for a mayoral election, still several months away. A longtime incumbent, who refuses to celebrate the Gay Pride Parade, is to be put to the test by a variety of challengers, assuming a second term wont conflict with his Jimmy Kimmel-related moonlighting. Same old, same old.COMPARISON GRADE: B+All right, pens down.Depending on how you weigh each category, the comparison works out to a solid “B”. Not too bad, really. Going in, I didnt think the teams would match up this well.Of course, these grades are neither objective, nor properly weighted, nor were they subject to any advanced algorithmic, Nate Silver-style analyses, but moreover is the baseline, root-level difficulty. This sort of phenomenon doesnt come down to math. It is a familial connection between team and fans. It is emotional. With so many entertainment sources vying for our attentions, a city-wide swoon grows ever less likely. And unlike baseball, where only four teams in 1985 made the playoffs, basketball allows for 16 entrants, with more making the playoffs than getting left behind. Just making the playoffs or winning the division is not in the same stratum as the accomplishments of those 85 Jays, who were playing for a spot in the World Series. These Raptors — seriously we gotta change the name — are greyer in years, and owe us more success if they hope to be revered like Bell and Whitt and Gillick. To capture the ardent fans, the otherwise supportive moniker-loathers, and the bandwagoners alike, a deep playoff run will be necessary. Then maybe, Terrence Ross will grab the torch from George Bell. Maybe this team, despite already having a winning record, is more a version of the rarely-considered 1982 Jays, the ones who first showed promise.Maybe they are just something new.GALLAYS POLL #6How do you think the 2013/2014 Raptors stack up to the 1985 Blue Jays?(A) Theyve won me over, same as the Jays did.(B) I like where they are headed, but that 1985 team was special, yo.© Way too soon for a comparison, if ever.(D) Im not from Toronto. Could not care less. I have the Fireplace Channel on right now. ’ ’ ’

DETROIT — Don Kelly entered the game as a pinch-hitter and batted twice before the inning was over. It was an unusual experience for the Detroit utilityman — and a sign that the Tigers offence is beginning to live up to its potential. Miguel Cabrera hit a go-ahead single and the Tigers scored seven runs with two outs in the eighth to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-3 on Sunday. Kelly started the rally with a one-out single with the Tigers down a run. By the time he came to the plate again, Detroit led 7-2. “It doesnt happen too often, but we like it when it does,” Kelly said. Detroit was playing in front of its third home sellout of the season — the team retired former manager Sparky Andersons No. 11 before the game. Jhonny Peralta gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the second with his 12th homer, but the Tigers trailed 2-1 until their big eighth inning. Kelly singled off reliever Aaron Heilman (4-1). After Austin Jackson struck out, Casper Wells drew a walk. David Hernandez then came on and didnt retire any of the four batters he faced. He walked Magglio Ordonez on four pitches to load the bases for the always-dangerous Cabrera, who appeared to get jammed but managed to line a two-run single to left. Hernandez then gave up RBI singles to Victor Martinez and Peralta. “We never quit, thats for sure,” Martinez said. And they didnt stop. Brandon Inge hit a two-run single off Bryan Shaw to make it 7-2, and Kelly — batting again — reached on an error, with another run scoring. Al Alburquerque (5-1) pitched 1 1-3 innings of scoreless relief for Detroit. “We played a tough game, but theyve got a great offence and they got everything rolling all at once,” Arizona outfielder Chris Young said. “Thats why you have to get all 27 outs.” The Tigers are averaging 5.1 runs a game in June. Cabrera, Peralta and Martinez have hit well all season, and Ordonez is showing signs of turning around a poor start. “We hit some of them good, some of them not so good — but wherever we hit them, they found a gap, found a hole,” manager Jim Leyland said. “That was the big thing. Miguel had a big two-out hit, thats golden. Thats what hes good at. The other guys kind of picked up on it and we added some insurance and had a good win after what looked like it could be a potentially tough day.” Arizona wasted a fine start by Joe Saunders, who allowed a run and four hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked one and has thrown at least six innings in 11 consecutive starts. Arizona scored twice in the seventh to take a 2-1 lead. Young led off with a double and Miguel Montero followed with a tying single. Detroit starter Brad Penny got the next two outs on popups, but Gerardo Parra hit a single and Ryan Roberts followed with another to put the Diamondbacks ahead. Roberts was in the starting lineup only because Melvin Mora was a late scratch with a bad back. Penny went 6 2-3 innings, allowing two runs and eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts. “Thank God they took Saunders out,” Penny said. “He threw a great game. He was making pitches with everything — pitching in and out, up and down and locating his off-speed stuff.” Alburquerque, who has been outstanding all season, relieved Penny with two on in the seventh. He allowed a walk to load the bases, then struck out Stephen Drew to end the threat. Alburquerque gave up two hits in the eighth but worked out of that jam, too. He lowered his earned-run average to 1.95. He has struck out 46 hitters in 27 2-3 innings. NOTES: Montero and Roberts had three hits each for Arizona, and Peralta had three for the Tigers. … Detroit 2B Carlos Guillen (left knee) is scheduled to start a rehabilitation assignment with Class-A Lakeland on Monday. … Jackson struck out twice in the eighth inning and four times in the game. cheap jerseys china . Take a look at TSN. HOUSTON — Scott Feldman didnt get frustrated after allowing six hits in the first three innings Sunday. He kept attacking, and it paid off. Feldman scattered eight hits in his first complete game in nearly a year, Chris Carter and Matt Dominguez each had two RBIs, and the Houston Astros beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 on Sunday. Feldman (5-8) retired 17 of the last 19 batters, including nine straight at one point, and won for the first time since June 29. It was his first complete game since Sept. 6, 2013, against the White Sox. “I was just trying to battle through it,” Feldman said. “Once I got that double play with the bases loaded in the third, I felt like I got into a better groove.” Houston manager Bo Porter said Feldman was outstanding and looked like he did in April, when he went 2-1 with 1.69 ERA. “The cutter was really working. He was able to get in on the lefties and just had that late life to his fastball,” Porter said. “He was sinking it away and did a really good job today.” Carters two-run single in the third gave the Astros the lead. “I was thinking to get a ball up there in the zone and put it in play and not strike out there with the bases loaded,” Carter said. Dominguez had an RBI single as part of a three-run fourth and added a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Dominguez, Jon Singleton and Jake Marisnick each had two hits as Houston won its fifth in the last seven games and third straight against Toronto. Marcus Stroman (7-3) allowed five runs on seven hits in three-plus innings. He had allowed one run in 21 innings over his last three starts. “I just didnt have my stuff,” Stroman said. “I had trouble putting guys away. It was just a tough one, but Im not discouraged.” Dominguez and Marisnick hit RBI singles in the fourth to chase Stroman. Robbie Grossman drew a bases-loaded walk off Todd Redmond later in the fourth to make it 5-1.dddddddddddd Jose Reyes had three hits for Toronto. He remained in the game after sliding head first into second in the first inning and appearing to hurt his right shoulder on the play. Ryan Goins RBI single in the second put Toronto up 1-0. “Weve been playing good baseball,” Toronto manager John Gibbons said. “The last three games didnt go our way, and we got outplayed, pure and simple.” ON DECK: Blue Jays: Toronto is off Monday before returning home to start a three-game series against division rival Baltimore on Tuesday. Lefty Mark Buehrle (11-7, 3.11) will start Tuesday for the Blue Jays. Astros: Houston is also off Monday before travelling to Philadelphia for a three-game interleague series. Left-hander Dallas Keuchel (10-7, 2.97) will start Tuesday for the Astros. TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: Infielder Brett Lawrie, who has been on the disabled list since June 23 with a fractured right index finger, will continue a rehab assignment at Single A Dunedin. Lawrie went 2 for 3 hitting leadoff Saturday night and played third base after starting at second base Friday night. Astros: Infielder Jesus Guzman was placed on the 15-day disabled list with back spasms, and the Astros promoted outfielder Domingo Santana from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday. .. Outfielder George Springer, who has been on the disabled since July 20, will start a rehab assignment Monday at Single A Quad Cities. CABRERAS STREAK SNAPPED Toronto outfielder Melky Cabrera had his hitting streak snapped at 10 games after going 0 for 4. Cabrera, who ranks second in the majors with 142 hits and is third in multihit games with 41, has a hit in 89 of 112 games this year. SINGLETON HEATING UP Singleton recorded his second straight multihit game and is 7 for 15 in his last three starts. Of the rookies 36 hits this season, 19 have been for extra bases. ’ ’ ’

TORONTO – Toronto FC went 1-2-2 during an injury-plagued Florida training camp, coming home to a frozen tundra. Star striker Jermain Defoe has yet to touch down and fellow marquee signings Michael Bradley and Gilberto have been hampered by injury. Goalie Julio Cesar is on international duty with Brazil in South Africa and backup forward Bright Dike is already probably out for the season after tendon surgery. Manager Ryan Nelsen has been down three fullbacks and three strikers. Minor niggles have turned into more bothersome setbacks. Its meant extra minutes for some players and new positions for others. For an MLS franchise that has gone all-in on the transfer market in a bid to finally make the playoffs after seven seasons of failure and a woeful 51-105-66 record, there is still much work to do. The good news is Toronto has a bye this weekend when 16 clubs kick off the 2014 season. Toronto opens March 15 in Seattle. “We planned that brilliantly,” Nelsen said dryly after practice Tuesday under the bubble at the teams well-appointed north Toronto training ground. Nelsen, in his second year at the helm, has managed to find some positives in the rocky pre-season. “It did expose our weaknesses,” he said. “You always get exposed at some part of the season, whether its injuries or suspensions or international call-ups or something like that.” “We know what we have, we know what we need to be and where we need to get to,” he added. "Its good to know now rather than a quarter or halfway through the season. “Well be a different animal come the 15th but in the back of my mind, its a nice thing to know moving forward.” Depth is an issue. Toronto can field an impressive starting 11 but pre-season has already shown that the wrong combination of injuries at the wrong position can cause havoc. The team remains very much a work in progress. Even MLSsoccer.com, which ranked TFC 17th out of 19 teams in its weekly “power rankings,” has Toronto 14th in its pre-season list. “Were not all aboard the bandwagon just yet,” said the website. Nelsen, whose team went 6-17-11 last season, says he doesnt concern himself with “outside voices.” But the former New Zealand international knows that whipping up a gourmet meal is more than just buying the right ingredients. “Just because you make some changes, its not like a light switch. It does take time,” he said. "Thats the beauty of sport. “But in saying that we fully expect to get where we want to be. And if you think the expectations are high outside, theyre probably higher inside. But we know its hard and we know its a journey to get to.” The pre-season injury list has included forwards Gilberto (quadricep) and Dike (tendon), midfielders Jonathan Osorio (flu) and Daniel Lovitz (knee) and fullbacks Mark Bloom (quadricep), Bradley Orr (calf) and Justin Morrow (hip). Bradley, who withdrew from the U.S squad to face Ukraine in Cyprus, is nursing a minor foot issue. More worrying for Nelsen is the fact that the injuries to Bloom and Orr started as minor issues but got worse. “Well definitely be addressing it,” Nelsen said. “You always get niggles and you always get injuries but theyre re-injuries. When you re-do an injury, its major cause for concern.” Nelsen expects everyone to be ready for the season. Defoe, the former Tottenham star, is expected to join the team after Wednesdays England friendly against Denmark. “As soon as he plays the game for England, hell be on a plane over,” said Nelsen. Still, that means a longer road for team chemistry. Although, unlike past off-seasons, Torontos transaction list has been relatively short and very select. Bradley, Defoe, Gilberto, Cesar, Morrow, Jackson, Orr, and veteran midfielder Dwayne De Rosario are all targeted as starters. The injuries at fullback have meant rookie centre back Nick Hagglund has been shifted to an emergency right back. “Couldnt be more happy with Nick,” said Nelsen. Mata had already been dropped from Spains squad once this season and with the country blessed with so many playmakers, he was in real danger of being overlooked for the trip to Brazil to defend their title. jerseys from china . PAUL, Minn.ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Oakland Raiders have added another proven veteran to their rebuilding defence, signing free-agent cornerback Carlos Rogers to a one-year contract on Monday. Rogers, 32, joins former San Francisco 49ers secondary mate Tarell Brown on Oaklands overhauled defence. The Raiders have also brought in defensive linemen Justin Tuck, LaMarr Woodley and Antonio Smith. All of those other players are at least 29 years old and have played in the Super Bowl in their careers as general manager Reggie McKenzie is counting on that experience to help end an 11-year playoff drought. “The Raiders have been one of the teams that have been more active in the off-season, trying to turn things around,” Rogers said. “I see where this team is going and it wasnt hard to come here and finalize the deal.” Oakland is coming off back-to-back four-win seasons and hasnt had a winning record since winning the 2002 AFC championship. After showing some promise early in the season, the Raiders defence wilted late and allowed the second-most points per game (28.3) in franchise history. Oakland has had two of the three highest scoring seasons allowed in coach Dennis Allens first two years with the franchise. That led to the big changes on defence this off-season. Rogers played an NFL-high 1,259 snaps as a slot cornerback in his three years in San Franciscoo, according to Pro Football Focus.ddddddddddddHe will likely play that role again in Oakland on the nickel defence and will also compete with last years first-round pick D.J. Hayden for a starting spot outside across from Brown. “We were a big part of the puzzle that turned San Franciscos defence around, so hopefully we can translate that over here and be even better,” Rogers said. Rogers was let go earlier this off-season by the Niners in a cost-saving move. He said he holds no ill will to his former team but is looking forward to playing San Francisco this upcoming season. Rogers has started 116 games over nine seasons with Washington and San Francisco. He has 17 career interceptions and 109 passes defenced. His best year statistically came in his first season in San Francisco in 2011 when he had six interceptions and was picked for the Pro Bowl and earned second-team All Pro honours. That performance helped lead San Francisco back to the playoffs after eight straight years without a berth. Rogers played in three NFC title games in three seasons with the Niners and also lost the Super Bowl to Baltimore following the 2012 season. “I want to continue to win and I want to continue to be a big part of helping to turn this organization around, like I did in San Francisco and continue to win and try to get to that Super Bowl and win it,” Rogers said. ’ ’ ’

TORONTO — When the pace car began sliding around the Toronto track, IndyCar knew it was in trouble. The Honda Indy Toronto was postponed Saturday after steady rain throughout the afternoon made for hazardous conditions on the 11-turn, 2.81-kilometre track at Exhibition Place. “Im gutted. I just feel so bad for all the fans here in Toronto,” said driver James Hinchcliffe of Oakville, Ont. "Its the worst case scenario — the rain started right as the race was supposed to start, the conditions were just so bad. “Just gutted for these guys. I really hope we can get back tomorrow and mother nature co-operates a bit more and we can put on a show. These fans have been great all week and they definitely deserve it.” The race was moved to Sunday morning, with the second half of a planned doubleheader still scheduled for the afternoon. Both races were also shortened from 85 laps to 65. The morning race will feature a rolling start, while the second will be a standing start. Qualifying for the second race will also be determined by current points standings, which puts Helio Castroneves on pole. Driver visibility and a slick street course led to a pair of accidents before Saturdays race ever got started when Ryan Briscoe and Will Power each hit the wall. Even the pace car nearly slid into a corner. “The conditions were tough for sure,” said Ryan Hunter-Reay. “I cant speak for the drivers in the back on how visibility was but it was borderline — marginal even — for us.” Sebastien Bourdais was set to start on pole after qualifying first in the morning session. Bourdais waited under an umbrella through two red flags that twice pulled the cars off the track as IndyCar officials hoped for the weather to clear. It never did. Bourdais, who was to start a race from the pole for the first time since 2007, looked steamed as he left the pits for good. Hell start again in first place Sunday morning. IndyCar president Derrick Walker said race officials waited as long as they could for conditions to improve. “I think it would have been crazy to have started the race today,” said Walker. "I mean it doesnt look like a lot of water but when you get out there and look at it, its enough to make a difference. … “I dont think we did the wrong thing. We waited and waited and part of the indecision … was really us just going as late as we could before we called it.” The race, which was initially shortened from 85 laps to 65 and two hours to 90 minutes to compensate for the delay, was finally called after well over two hours of waiting. The first casualty of the weather was a planned standing start that had to be scrapped in favour of a safer, single-file rolling start. Briscoe then collided with the same turn where he broke his wrist last year. Power, who was supposed to start second, slid into a 180 and damaged his car to trigger another delay. Powers Penke crew hustled to get his car fixed and back on the grid, but the effort was futile in the end when the race was cancelled and soggy fans left the track. IndyCar races can be run in the rain, the last one as recently as June 28 at the doubleheader in Houston. But Walker said sweepers couldnt keep water from collecting on the track at Exhibition Place. Driver and fan safety, in the end, trumped the race. “Racing in the rains great but you cant go and throw everybody in the fence just because the conditions are archaic and I think they were that today,” said Walker. Both races Sunday could be just as wet. More rain is in the forecast, but Walker was adamant IndyCar would run at least one race in Toronto. “I think wed probably stay here as long as we possible could to get a race in, for sure,” said Walker who added there was a chance it might also happen Monday if necessary. “But I think were going to get it in tomorrow. At least one race tomorrow.” nfl jerseys china . cheap nfl jerseys .com) – There was clearly no looking ahead for the U.KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Indianapolis Colts had watched the Kansas City Chiefs march downfield for an easy score on the first series of the game, yet nobody on their sideline seemed to be worried. In fact, it seemed as if their confidence soared. Andrew Luck answered by calmly picking apart the Chiefs defence, Donald Brown had touchdowns running and receiving, and the Colts didnt allow another point the rest of the way in a 23-7 victory Sunday that could turn into a preview of an AFC wild-card game. If Indianapolis ends up as the No. 4 seed in the playoffs and with the Chiefs assured of the fifth seed, the two teams would meet again in two weeks at Lucas Oil Stadium. Kansas Citys chances of winning the AFC West were dashed earlier Sunday when Denver beat Houston. “There was no panic,” said the Colts Jerrell Freeman, who had two interceptions. “When they got that touchdown we were like, Aww, its OK. Its just execution, and us not trying to panic.” Instead, it was the Chiefs (11-4) who looked as if they panicked. Alex Smith threw for 153 yards, but he fumbled once and was picked off twice. Knile Davis also fumbled the ball away, and the Chiefs were hit with several key penalties that scuttled any chance of mounting a second-half comeback in the frigid weather at Arrowhead Stadium. “Well see them again,” Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson said. “Theyve got the upper hand on us right now because in their minds they think they can beat us. If we go down there, it will be a different story. But weve got to fight our way back.” The AFC South-champion Colts (10-5) have beaten the Chiefs in five of their last six games. Jamaal Charles ran for 106 yards and the games opening score, but Kansas City failed to keep him involved as the Colts scored the final 23 points. Luck finished with 241 yards passing, while Brown gashed a decent run defence despite working behind a patchwork offensive line. Adam Vinatieri also had three field goals for the Colts, who didnt commit a turnover. “Thats what coach (Chuck) Pagano has preached since Ive been with the club,” Luck said. “Limit turnovers on offence and create turnovers on defence.” Early on, the Chiefs appeared as if they weree going to pick up right where they left off last week, when they hung 56 points on the Raiders.dddddddddddd. They marched downfield on the opening drive, and Charles took a carry around the right side 31 yards for a touchdown. The Colts defence stiffened after that, though, and the closest Kansas City came to scoring again in the first half came when Ryan Succop yanked a 47-yard field goal wide left. “It was a team effort in not a very good way,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “You cant pull your foot off the accelerator when you get out that quick.” Meanwhile, Indianapolis kept taking advantage of breakdowns in the Kansas City pass defence, the most glaring one coming after running back Knile Davis fumbled in the second quarter. Brown leaked out of the backfield unnoticed by the Kansas City defence, Luck hit him with a dump-off pass that he took virtually untouched 33 yards for a score. “I think they busted the coverage,” Brown said, “so that made my job a lot easier.” Browns job wasnt a whole lot tougher when the Colts got the ball back in the third quarter off Smiths interception. He raced through a gaping hole, then tight-rope walked down the sideline 51 yards for a score — a video review showed that he somehow stayed inbounds. Vinatieri added to the Colts cushion with his third field goal, capping a drive kept alive by a defensive hold and a taunting penalty after the Chiefs had already held on third down. Smith was picked off again by Freeman in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter, and then the quarterback fumbled the ball away with 3:24 left to seal the game. “The way we opened up, marching down the way we did, it felt like things were going to be the way theyve been,” Smith said. “We really didnt get into a rhythm after that, didnt execute in any area, and then the turnovers. The turnovers hurt you.” NOTES: Vinatieri has now scored 1,993 points, passing fellow kicker Jason Elam for seventh on the NFLs career list. … Three of the Chiefs four losses have come at Arrowhead Stadium. … Kansas City had scored 101 points the last two weeks. … The Colts started their seventh offensive line combination and fifth in five games. ’ ’ ’

The Professional Referee Organization, which manages game officials for the U.S. Soccer Federation and MLS, notified the Professional Soccer Referee Association of the lockout and said replacement officials will be used. PRO said the union, which was formed last year, rejected a no strike-no lockout agreement that management had proposed. The sides have bargained since July without reaching a deal on a labour contract. “Our proposal represents a significant increase above current compensation for referees and places them above the average for officials around the world,” said PRO general manager Peter Walton, an English Premier League referee from 2003-12. PRO said in the 1 1/2 years since its formation, it had increased full-time officials from two to nine and added 11 part-time officials. The PSRA has filed uunfair labour practice charges accusing the PRO of bad-faith bargaining and making threats against its members.dddddddddddd “We have requested a plethora of information, including financials, that PRO and MLS have refused to provide, instead demanding we take their pleas of poverty at face value,” said Lukas Middlebrook, a lawyer for the union. TORONTO – Brett Lawries impending return from hamstring tightness creates a problem – a good problem – for manager John Gibbons. That is, how does he keep the red hot bat of Juan Francisco in the lineup when first base is taken by Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind is back as the designated hitter? “Maybe Francisco can play second,” joked Gibbons. In all seriousness, Francisco has been a revelation for the ballclub since signing a minor league deal on April 2 and arriving in Cleveland to meet his new Blue Jays teammates on April 20. Coming off an 18-home run season split between Atlanta and Milwaukee last year, Franciscos already hit five in 61 at-bats for Toronto. He doesnt get cheated, either, having deposited one in the fourth deck of Rogers Centre, just above Paul Beestons name on the Blue Jays Level of Excellence. Franciscos slash line of .311/.403/.623 (1.026 OPS) is well above his career .248/.308/.447 (.755 OPS) but even if his history suggests his numbers will regress the longer he plays, until it happens, Francisco needs to stay in the lineup. “Right now were looking at everything,” said manager John Gibbons. “While hes hot weve got to find a way to keep him in there somehow.” The obvious play is to move Brett Lawrie to second base. It doesnt have to be permanent. Lawrie, should the decision be made, hopes its only temporary. “Im going to do it because its for the team but Im not necessarily amazed about it,” said Lawrie. “Im a third baseman. Its where I play. Its what Ive been doing. Its what I did to work to get here. Obviously Francisco is swinging a hot bat but were going to have to find another way to get him in the lineup, who knows, but if I do get put at second base thats how it goes. Ill just do it for my team.” Look at this hypothetical starting lineup with Francisco at third base and Lawrie at second base: Reyes – SSCabrera – LFBautista – RFEncarnacion – 1BFrancisco – 3BNavarro – CLind – DHLawrie – 3BRasmus – CF One through nine, wheres the easy out? The Blue Jays would be giving something up defensively with the realignment but Francisco has proven to be more adept at third base in Lawries absence than expected. “Ive been very impressed,” said Gibbons. “I think that was his rap. His defence was the reason he never really established himself but we havent seen it. Of course hes not Lawrie down there but how many guys are?” Dont count on Saturday being Lawries return date. He took ground balls on Friday afternoon and participated in batting practice for a second consecutive day. Its part of the process of ramping up the effort level, testing his sore right hamstring. “Ive still got to do some other stuff baseball-wise,” said Lawrie. “Ive still got to get up to relatively full speed to see how were doing. Ran on the treadmill today at a little bit higher pace so feeling a little bit better.” Lawries willing to be a team guy. He also wants the appropriate recognition for his gold glove caliber play at the hot corner. “Im a third baseman,” said Lawrie. “I worked my butt off to get where Im at. Im not saying its not going to help the team. Im here to do what it is to help the team but I worked my butt off to be that good at third base and continue to do what Im doing. I work everyday over there. Still continuing to get my work in and second base, it is what it is, man, its not what Im here to do. I worked my butt off to do what I do out there.” cheap jerseys from china . For Kyle Lowry, its become an accepted reality. He will be traded. The question is, when and where? The Raptors point guard is widely believed to be next on general manager Masai Ujiris chopping block after the first domino – Rudy Gay, Lowrys best friend – fell last week. Garza, who signed a four-year, $50 million deal with the Milwaukee in the off-season, retired the Cubs in order in four of the first six innings. http://www.wholesalejerseysfamily.com/. On Tuesday, they did it again. Roy Hibbert scored 22 points and Lance Stephenson fell just short of his fourth triple double this season, helping the Pacers hold off Torontos late charge for an 86-79 victory that allowed them to keep the NBAs best record. Jarome Iginla and Zdeno Chara each had two goals, Tuukka Rask made 25 saves and the Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-1 Saturday.CARDIFF — Cardiff manager Malky Mackay was back on the hot seat after his side was thumped by Southampton 3-0 in the English Premier League on Thursday. A pair by Jay Rodriguez and another by Rickie Lambert, all in the first half hour, helped Southampton cruise to its first victory in seven games. Fans of the visitors chanted to Mackay, “Youre getting sacked in the morning,” and he couldnt defend himself in the face oof a woeful display.dddddddddddd Cardiff owner Vincent Tan wanted Mackay out last week, but after Mackay vowed to stay and was backed by team fans, club chairman Mehmet Dalman said on Sunday that Mackay was “in charge for the forseeable future.” However, Cardiff supporters were booing Mackay and the team by fulltime on Thursday, not that Tan might have heard. He left his seat five minutes before time. ’ ’ ’

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Kevin Durant is learning to be patient if he gets off to a bad start shooting. Durant showed the new approach Wednesday night, scoring 32 points, despite missing six of his first seven shots, as the Oklahoma City Thunder remained undefeated with a 98-95 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. “You know, I think Im maturing as a player,” Durant said. “Last year, if I got off to a slow start, I would have let it affect me. But I try to keep my composure and believe in myself and know I worked hard.” The shots started falling after the inaccurate start, as Durant made nine of his next 10 before converting the clinching free throws with a second left. “I started off terrible,” Durant said. “I thought I was going to have a really, really bad game after the first shot I took. It didnt even touch the rim. But I just stayed with it and continued to believe in myself.” James Harden finished with 20 points, while Kendrick Perkins added 10 for Oklahoma City. However, point guard Russell Westbrook had an awful offensive night, finishing with only four points, all on free throws while misfiring on 13 shots from the field. He and Durant also had to be separated after shouting at each other during a second-quarter timeout, The Oklahoman reported on its website. Westbrook wasnt available for comment after the game. He made a pair of free throws with four seconds left before Memphis Zach Randolph connected on a three-pointer with 1.8 seconds remaining to cut it to 96-95. “I think you come to expect the game to be as physical as this game was when you come to play against Memphis,” Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. “It was a heck of a game. I thought both teams gave everything they had. .Every possession was difficult to get off a good shot because both teams were competing on that end of the floor.” Randolph finished with 24 points, while Rudy Gay scored 19 and Marc Gasol added 16 points. Each had 12 rebounds, as Memphis held a 49-41 advantage on the boards. Jeremy Pargo, filling in for point guard Mike Conley, who aggravated a left ankle injury in the games early stages, had 15 points and seven assists, while committing only one turnover. “He played with a lot of confidence, and thats great. We need that,” Gasol said. “He is very aggressive. I think hes going to get better, too, as far as reading the game and knowing whats going on offensively and defensively.” The game was an early matchup between two of the Wests young up-and-coming teams, who met in last seasons conference semifinals, won by the Thunder in seven games. And at times the atmosphere had the physical play and intensity of a playoff game. The jostling under the basket was rough, and the reaction of players to calls and no-calls was indicative of post-season play rather than an early contest. “It was like a playoff game. Their fans were loud,” Harden said. “…We knew it was going to be a tough battle. We came out here and fought and did everything we needed to do to win.” Memphis missed 12 shots before Randolph made the Grizzlies first field goal with 4:04 left in the first quarter. Oklahoma City continued to lead through the second quarter despite Durant continuing to misfire until the final minutes of the half. He had 13 at the break, including hitting all six of his free throws. Harden added 10 for the Thunder. Meanwhile, Westbrook missed all five of his first-half shots and didnt record a point. But despite Memphis poor shooting and the loss of Conley to the ankle injury just over a minute into the game, Oklahoma Citys lead at intermission was only 54-49. Pargo, a rookie, who played two seasons in the Euroleague after playing at Gonzaga, continued to pester Westbrook and Memphis put together a 12-6 run to open the second half for the Grizzlies first lead at 61-60 on Randolphs fadeaway with 6:33 left in third. The teams remained close the rest of the third period with Oklahoma City carrying a 72-70 lead into the final quarter as Durant tallied 10 in the period. “In the first three quarters, we had some good opportunities,” Harden said. “(Brooks) said to stick with it and keep shooting open jump shots. We got some to fall.” Memphis took a 76-75 lead on a 15-foot shot by Randolph with 9:40 left, but Oklahoma City began connecting on 3-pointers to compose a 14-1 run. Daequan Cook had two long-range shots in the rally, while Durant and Harden had one apiece, Hardens giving the Thunder its biggest lead of the game at 89-77 with 5:23 left. The Thunder shot 10 of 25 from outside the arc, while Memphis was only 2 of 16. “We dont make threes; we are not a good 3-point shooting team,” Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. “We would love to have a couple of guys that could make threes consistently, but we dont.” Randolph scored six straight Memphis points to whittle away at the Thunder advantage after the 3-point shooting barrage. Gays 12-foot baseline jumper pulled Memphis within 92-90 with 58 seconds left, but Durant answered with a 15-foot jumper of his own and the Thunder held on. NOTES: Last years conference semifinals solidified the similarities between the two teams. Durant noted that both are small-market teams with young players in key roles. But Thunder coach Scott Brooks said the seven-game series doesnt translate into a rivalry yet. “Both teams grew up in that series,” Brooks said before the game, adding: “I think its probably too early. In rivalries, it takes years of playoff battles. Its one great playoff battle for sure.” While the Thunder won the semifinal playoff series, Memphis was 3-1 against Oklahoma City during the regular season. .Durant has recorded at least 30 points in the first three games, the only player to do that the past two seasons. The Thunder were 24-5 last season when Durant recorded 30 points or more. cheap jerseys from china . Davis, 28, was stopped in Tysons Corner about 4 p.m. Thursday and arrested, Fairfax County Police said. Police spokeswoman Shelley Broderick declined to discuss why Davis was stopped. A court date has not been set. The NFL announced Wednesday that Davis was suspended indefinitely without pay. Davis, who will become a free agent next month, said in a statement Thursday that the suspension resulted from taking a supplement that contained a banned substance, not recreational drug use, which prompted his 2011 suspension. Court records show nearly three dozen traffic-rrelated charges against Davis in recent years.dddddddddddd Specifically, court records in Fairfax, Loudoun and Arlington counties and Fairfax City show 34 charges from 23 separate incidents going back to 2008, the year the Redskins drafted Davis in the second round. Twenty-one of the charges resulted in convictions, including a speeding charge for 82 mph in a 50 zone, driving on a suspended license, and numerous charges for improperly tinted windows. The count does not include dozens of charges for failing to pay tolls, and none of the previous charges includes any allegations of drunken driving. A lawyer who has represented Davis on some of his most recent charges, Mark Dycio, was not immediately available for comment Friday morning. ’ ’ ’
