Téma: Jak postupovat / :08 left in the seco SOCHI, Russia — Mark Arendz recorded a first for Canada on the opening day of competition at the Paralympic Winter Games. The 24-year-old from Hartsville, P.E.I., won a silver medal Saturday in the biathlon, the first Canadian ever to do so in the event. Arendz finished just .07 seconds behind gold medallist Vladislav Lekomtcev of Russia, who posted a winning time of 19 minutes 3.7 seconds. Russian Azat Karachurin finished third in 19:14.9. Arendzs coach, Robin McKeever, guided his brother and 10-time Paralympic medallist, Brian, to Canadas only other Paralympic medal in biathlon. They captured a bronze medal in the visually impaired 7.5-kilometre sprint discipline at the 2006 Paralympics in Turin, Italy. “It feels absolutely great and a big relief to get on the podium right away,” said a beaming Arendz. “I fought as hard as I could, and it was such a close race at the end.” It was one of three medals for Canada on the day. Josh Dueck of Kimberley B.C., also earned a silver medal in the mens downhill sit-ski. Mac Marcoux of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and guide Robin Femy of Mont-Tremblant, Que., claimed a bronze in the mens visually-impaired downhill. Dueck won his medal on the 10th anniversary of the freestyle skiing accident that landed him in a wheelchair. It was his second Paralympic medal after claiming a silver in slalom at the 2010 Vancouver Paralympic Games. “This is fantastic,” Dueck said. "Im really about performance, and I took a fast line down the hill and took some chances and I got pretty lucky. “I crossed the line and was thrilled. Second is awesome.” Kurt Oatway, of Calgary and Caleb Brousseau, of Terrace, B.C., were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the sit-ski category. Also, the Canadian sledge hockey team opened with a convincing 10-1 win over Sweden. Anthony Gale of Brampton, Ont., and Adam Dixon of Midland, Ont., led the way with two goals and two assists apiece. The Canadian team returns to action Sunday facing Norway. Four years ago, the Norwegians nipped Canada to win the bronze medal in Vancouver. And in wheelchair curling, Canada, the defending world champion, earned wins of 6-3 over Great Britain and 5-4 versus host Russia. The Canadians take on Sweden on Sunday. Arendz was fourth midway through the race but shot clean in his second stop at the range to begin his successful charge to a podium finish. “The plan was to shoot clean and I was focused on following that, but I missed that one target just slightly,” said Arendz. "I thought I had it but a twitch of the finger and I just missed it. “I wasnt far off. I told myself to fight hard on that penalty loop to get over the penalty and finish strong.” The course was slushy because of the warm weather, which created challenges for Arendz. “It is so warm and not really winter-like conditions so the course was really slowing down out there,” he said. "The guys in the wax room did a great job on the skis. “I will celebrate this one with them.” Russias Alena Kaufman shot clean en route to winning the womens standing class race. Caroline Bisson of Ottawa finished 14th. Margarita Gorbounova, also of Ottawa, and her guide, Andrea Bundon of Regina, were seventh in the six-kilometre womens visually impaired race. When they did, they left behind the Carolina Hurricanes. David Desharnais scored twice and the Canadiens rallied for a 4-1 victory Saturday night. “We had a little slump a couple of weeks ago and we wanted to get out of it,” Desharnais said. “We did and we want to stay up in the standings and with these three wins, we did. That was our goal.” Ryan White and Brian Gionta also scored and Carey Price made 31 saves to help the Canadiens win their third in a row. “It was nice to finish before the break with another win,” said Price, set to play for Canada in the Olympics. “We talked about staying focused and earning that one and it worked out for us. Confidence in hockey is a big thing and to finish strong like this is good,” Montreal left wing Max Pacioretty, a member of the U.S. team, suffered a first-period injury after being checked into the goal by Carolinas Brett Bellemore. He left with 7:30 left in the first period and did not return. After the game, Pacioretty said it was all precautionary for his to sit out the rest of the game. “I went in pretty hard and I got the wind knocked out of me,” Pacioretty said. “I think the team wanted to play it safe and I think it was a good decision.” After a scoreless first period, Carolina got on the scoreboard first in the second period. Drayson Bowman sccored his fourth goal of the season with a rising shot from the top of the right circle at 5:42.dddddddddddd Bowman took advantage of Tuomo Ruutus screen that kept Price from making a play on the puck. But the rest of the game belonged to the Canadiens. “We responded the right way,” Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. “Even though they scored the first goal, we started playing well.” Desharnais tied it with 2:08 left in the second, converting a 3-on-2 rush. It took only 1:25 for Montreal to take the lead as White scored on a rebound at the top of the crease with 42.7 seconds left in the period. Desharnais gave Montreal some breathing room early in the third period with his 11th goal of the season. It marked his first multi-goal game of the season. Gionta finished the scoring for Montreal with an empty-netter with 2:37 to go. Carolina defenceman Justin Faulk said the Hurricanes didnt play with energy. “We didnt have the drive and the effort we needed,” said Faulk, who also is on the U.S. Olympic team. “In a game like this, especially before the break, we needed to leave it all out there. It didnt go our way.” Neither team took advantage of their power-play opportunities. Montreal was 0 for 1 with the man-advantage, and Carolina failed on two power plays. The Mariners announced the deal on Tuesday. Furbushs arbitration eligibility is dependent on New York Mets infielder Ruben Tejada, who is one day short of three years of major league service. If Tejada were to win a grievance and gain a day of service time, Furbush (2 years, 121 days) would become eligible for arbitration as among the top 22 per cent by service time among players with at least two years but less than three. Furbush, 27, appeared in a team-best 71 games last season. He was 2-6 with a 3.74 ERA and a .199 opponent batting average. The left-hander tied for 10th in the AL in appearances and 13th with 20 holds. Furbush has spent parts of three seasons with Seattle. He was acquired in a trade with Detroit in July 2011. LONG POND, Pa. — Juan Pablo Montoya felt at home among a throng of his Colombian countrymen and fans in a very unique celebration spot. He detoured from the traditional Victory Lane party straight to the one thrown in his honour in the Pocono Raceway grandstands. The fans bounced, danced, cheered and unfurled flags for the Colombian driver who wouldnt make them wait long this season to celebrate a victory. Montoya zipped toward the checkered flag to the sight of hundreds of Colombian fans waving the flag and cheering him on. His win in the IndyCar race Sunday at Pocono Raceway was the highlight of a triumphant return to open-wheel racing after seven years in NASCAR. Up ahead, a serious run at the IndyCar championship. “I think people know Im coming,” Montoya said. Montoya saved his deepest gratitude for car owner Roger Penske. Penskes faith in bringing the talented and tempestuous Montoya aboard was rewarded. “I knew it was going to take a little bit of time,” Montoya said, "but having the opportunity to run for Roger, its unbelievable. Ive worked really hard physically and mentally to get here, and I feel in a really good place right now. Im really happy. Montoya won for the first time in the CART/IndyCar Series since 2000 and had his first major victory since he won a road-course race at Watkins Glen in NASCAR in 2010. Helio Castroneves was second to make it a 1-2 finish Sunday for Team Penske. With double points awarded in the 500-mile races, Castroneves moved into a tie for the points lead with Penske teammate Will Power. Carlos Munoz, Ryan Briscoe and Scott Dixon completed the top five. Montoya, who won from the pole, took the lead for good when Tony Kanaan was forced to pit for fuel with four laps left. Montoya took it from there and continued to stamp himself a player in the championship hunt. He moved to fourth in the standings. “As soon as we signed him, I knew he would be an asset for us, and a headache,” Castroneves said. Montoya damaged his front wing when he connected with Power on a pass for the lead on the 167th lap. Powers penalty troubles continued at Pocono when he blocked Castroneves on the 171st lap and had to serve a drive through penalty, effectively ending his shot at victory. “You tell them, Lets keep each other on the track,” Penske said. “But that was a little tight right there.” After only two top 10s in his first seven starts, Montoya reeled off a third, second and seventh in his past three. Now, he has the win needed to erase any lingering doubts that has move back to open wheel was the right one. Here are 5 things to know from the IndyCar race at Pocono: POWER PENALTY: Powers latest penalty cost him a shot at racing for the win — and his spot alone atop the points standings. Even worse, his ill-timed block almost derailed a podium finish for Penske teammate Castroneves.dddddddddddd Power was hit with a blocking penalty on Castroneves late in the race and his drive through penalty cost him a shot at racing for the win. He finished 10th. Power said he tried to let Castroneves go and had no intention of blocking him. He unleashed a profanity over the radio toward IndyCar and was told to cool down by Penske president Tim Cindric. “Thats not doing us any good now, is it? Get your head on straight and go,” he said. Power has been smacked with a rash of penalties this season that have cost him strong runs at the checkered flag. He was annoyed when he had to watch the replay after the race for NBC Sports. “It was another penalty and other drive through and another really good opportunity lost,” Power said. “Time after time it happens to me and no penalty.” NEWGARDEN RUN: Josef Newgarden said this weekend hed have to grade his season an F. On Sunday, that stood for fantastic. Newgarden started last after an accident in practice, then stormed his way to the front and led seven laps at the end of the race. He finished a solid eighth for Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. He surrendered the lead when he no choice but to make one final pit stop for fuel on Lap 194. “It was a big strategy race,” Newgarden said. “Considering nobody did much passing today and because it was more of a track position, fuel mileage and strategy race, I thought we did a really good job of keeping up and making the moves when we needed to. That helped get us into the top 10.” HAWKSWORTH OUT: Jack Hawksworth missed the IndyCar race Sunday at Pocono because of a heart contusion. Hawksworth was injured Saturday in an accident during the second practice session. He was evaluated and released from the infield care centre. Hawksworth stayed overnight for observation at a hospital and was released Sunday. Hawksworth will be re-evaluated by the IndyCar medical team Tuesday before being cleared to drive next week at Iowa Speedway. KANAAN CANT: Tony Kanaan dominated most of the race and led 78 laps. Montoya, who won from the pole, took the lead for good when Kanaan was forced to pit for fuel with four laps left. “Its obviously frustrating to dominate a race like that and not win,” Kanaan said. “We just missed going the full 500-mile distance by a few laps and its heartbreaking when those things happen. But that is racing, as they say, and we will focus on Iowa now and put it behind us.” SPEED RACER: The average speed of 202.402 mph was the fastest 500-mile race in IndyCar history. The 200-lap race was caution-free for the first 158 laps until Graham Rahal spun to bring out the yellow. The 158 consecutive laps of green flag racing to open a race was the longest stretch for a 500-mile race in IndyCar history. ’ ’ ’ |

Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins (3) – He had a solid first period again as he was composed and very confident in net. Carl Hagelins goal was a good shot above the glove which broke a 145 minute shutout streak for Fleury. He made the big save on Rick Nash during a two on one break look easy. The second goal was a bit of a softie as it squeaked through his glove shortside. Fleury was solid overall, but it was a slow night, only facing 15 shots. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (3) – There was slight interference on the first goal by Evgeni Malkin as he was late to get down and the puck went underneath his left pad. Téma: Jak postupovat / egan a transitio The Texas Rangers first tried to get Tommy Hanson as part of what was a franchise-changing trade seven years ago. Now they have signed the free agent right-hander to a one-year contract in their search for depth in a rotation dealing with injury concerns. Hanson signed for $2 million plus possible incentives Friday, two days before Rangers pitchers and catchers report to spring training in Surprise, Ariz. “Hes a guy we followed for a long time,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “Probably back to the Mark Teixeira trade in 07, followed his career and happy to have the opportunity to bring him in and looking forward to seeing him compete.” Texas also avoided salary arbitration with first baseman Mitch Moreland by agreeing to a $2.65 million contract for this season, a raise of more than $2 million. The two sides were scheduled for an arbitration hearing Wednesday, but agreed to a number just more than midway between the salary figures they exchanged. The 27-year-old Hanson was 4-3 with a 5.42 ERA in 15 games (13 starts) in a difficult season with the Los Angeles Angels that included a right forearm injury and the death of his stepbrother. “Mentally, I dont think I was where I needed to be last year,” Hanson said. “It wasnt only me. My whole family was dealing with that. Its hard to see your family struggle. Its difficult, something I dont really like to talk about. I feel like Im in a lot better place now than I was last year.” Hanson said hes glad that is in the past. Physically, he said he feels great after two months of throwing. The Rangers made room for Hanson by putting left-handed reliever Joseph Ortiz on the 60-day disabled list with a broken left foot. He had surgery last month after he was run over by a motorcycle while home in Venezuela. The Angels traded for Hanson after he won at least 10 games in all four major league seasons (2009-12) with Atlanta, the organization he was with when the Rangers traded Teixeira in the deal that brought shortstop Elvis Andrus, left-hander Matt Harrison and Neftali Feliz |

Téma: Jak postupovat / an skating sta PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Dont worry, Kris Letang insists. The heat is coming. Sure, the Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman admits the New York Rangers dont invite quite the same animosity inside his teams locker room as the Philadelphia Flyers. The Rangers ended any shot of that tantalizing matchup when they beat the Flyers in seven games to set up a showdown with Pittsburgh in the Eastern Conference semifinals starting Friday. That doesnt mean Letang expects the next two weeks to be devoid of drama. Far from it. “Im pretty sure the intensity will get really high at one point when we start,” Letang said. “The emotion is always going to be part of the game and were going to have to control it the best we can.” Its an internal battle the Penguins won during a taut first-round series against Columbus. Expected to send the inexperienced Blue Jackets home without much effort, Pittsburgh needed six trying games to advance. The way the Penguins figure it, thats a good thing. Forced to respond to adversity, they played what coach Dan Bylsma called their best 120 minutes this season to avoid the upset. “We keep coming and we keep coming, playing forward and playing in the offensive zone and grinding teams down with that play with that speed and quickness,” Bylsma said. “Games 5 and 6 were our best at playing that way.” The Penguins will need to do it four more times if they want to advance to the Eastern Conference finals for the second straight year. They split their four regular-season meetings with New York, all of them coming before the Olympic break. The Rangers hardly look like the team that was still struggling to find an identity when they last faced Pittsburgh in early February. Pittsburgh is no longer the patched-together unit that cruised to the Metropolitan Division title despite having stars Letang, Evgeni Malkin, Paul Martin and James Neal miss large chunks of the season due to injury. The Penguins are healthy. New York is hot. Five things to look for heading into Game 1. SLUMPING STARS: Pittsburgh captain and likely NHL MVP Sidney Crosby hasnt scored a goal in his past 10 playoff games. New York forward Rick Nash has just one in 19 post-season contests wearing a Rangers sweater. Whichever streak ends first could swing the balance of the series. Crosby had six assists against the Blue Jackets, including one to Malkin in the first period of Game 6 in Columbus that gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead. Crosby knows he needs to take more chances. So does Nash, who can live with the drought as long as the Rangers keep it going. “Thats all that matters,” Nash said. “Im going to try to keep getting my game going.” LUNDQVIST VS. FLEURY: New Yorks Henrik Lundqvist and Pittsburghs Marc-Andre Fleury are the two winningest goaltenders in the regular season over the past five years, combining for 334 victories. Yet Lundqvist has yet to lift the Rangers past the conference finals while Fleury has struggled in the playoffs since helping the Penguins win the Stanley Cup in 2009. Both had their wayward moments in the first round. Both responded with brilliant play. Whoever gets hot — and stays hot — will give his team the upper hand. POWERLESS POWER PLAY: The Rangers went just 3 for 29 on the power play against Philadelphia, ending the series by failing to score 21 straight times with the man advantage. Not exactly the recipe to hang with the Penguins, who had the NHLs best power play during the regular season and was a solid 4 for 15 against the Blue Jackets while adding a pair of short-handed goals in the process. GENOS BACK: Like Crosby, Malkin was in the midst of a lengthy goal drought before coming up with his second career playoff hat trick in the clincher against the Blue Jackets. The rust that came with missing the final three weeks of the regular season appeared to vanish as he lit up Columbus goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky in Game 6. Playing alongside Crosby at times to try to shake loose the cobwebs, Malkin got hot. Expect to see the two MVPs on the ice frequently against New York. NEW YORK MINUTE: Game 1 marks the middle of a busy stretch in which the Rangers will play five times in seven days. Thats fine by them considering it beats the alternative of watching from home. “Now were in the middle of it and were in the battle,” New York forward Brad Richards said. “This is when it gets real fun.” ___ AP Sports Writer Ira Podell in New York contributed to this report. So it was really good that I was able to deliver itt out here.dddddddddddd” Nguyen wont change a thing for the free skate. “Im looking forward to delivering the same performance and to just keep doing what I do in practice,” he said. Téma: Jak postupovat / er 29. The Lions can LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Clayton Kershaw gave up two home runs, as many as he did in his previous 11 starts, and that was enough to abruptly snap his long winning streak. Ryan Braun and Carlos Gomez homered against the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner and three-time defending major league ERA champion on Saturday night, as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 behind eight solid innings from Yovani Gallardo. Kershaw (14-3), who had won 11 straight decisions, allowed five hits and no walks and struck out 11 in going the distance for the 17th time in 202 career starts. “It comes down to (the fact that) I got outpitched,” said Kershaw, who had a 1.16 ERA over his previous 13 starts since his last loss on May 28 against Cincinnati. Last Sunday, he held the NL Central-leading Brewers to one run in eight innings in a 5-1 victory at Milwaukee. “Yovani pitched better than I did and we lost the game,” Kershaw said. "I just made more mistakes than he did and it showed up on the scoreboard. “Its funny, I felt like I pitched so much better than I did in Milwaukee. I got lucky in Milwaukee, and Im paying for it here.” Justin Turner had an RBI single in the fourth for the Dodgers, whose third loss in four games reduced their NL West lead over San Francisco to 4 1-2 games following the Giants 6-5 win over Philadelphia. Braun heard taunts of “Cheat-er, cheat-er” from the crowd of 50,849 as he dug in against Kershaw in the fourth inning. He temporarily silenced them with an opposite-field drive that barely cleared the right field fence and the leaping attempt of Matt Kemp, the runner-up to Braun for NL MVP honours in 2011. The two-run homer was the 15th shot this season for Braun, who was suspended for the final 65 games last season and the playoffs for violating baseballs drug policy. “Kershaw is the best pitcher in baseball and hes been on an incredibly great run,” Braun said. "Its extremely difficult to beat him, and it hasnt happened much this year. So for us to do that is an impressive accomplishment and something were proud of. “To split those two games he started is encouraging for us.” Gomez drove Kershaws first pitch of the sixth inning into the Dodgers bullpen in left field for his 19th homer. “I think one of our biggest strengths is that we have guys up and down the lineup who have the ability to hit home runs and drive the ball for extra-base hits,” Braun said. “When you face pitching thats this good, sometimes you dont get many opportunities.” Gallardo (8-6) threw 96 pitches, allowing a run and six hits with three strikeouts and a walk. The right-hander has won back-to-back starts for the first time since his first two outings of the season. “Yo was just outstanding,” Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. “He had great command and an outstanding fastball. He pitched off the fastball the whole game, mixing in his slider and curveball. He really dominated. Thats a good club, so you cant mess around and make mistakes against them.” Francisco Rodriguez got three outs for his major league-leading 38th save and 342nd of his career, despite giving up Kemps 15th homer leading off the ninth. Rodriguez, who broke a tie with Hall of Famer and former Brewers closer Rollie Fingers for 11th place on baseballs career list, has passed 11 players this season. TRAINERS ROOM Brewers: RHP Matt Garza, sidelined because of a strained left oblique, played catch for the second straight day. Dodgers: 3B Juan Uribe was placed on the disabled list because of an injured right hamstring for the second time this season. He is the seventh Dodgers player to go on the DL this month, joining SS Hanley Ramirez and pitchers Josh Beckett, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Paul Maholm, Chris Perez and Paco Rodriguez. UP NEXT Brewers: Wily Peralta (14-7, 3.46 ERA) is 5-1 with a 2.06 ERA in his last six starts since giving up a career-worst nine runs in a 9-7 home loss to the Phillies. Dodgers: Dan Haren (10-9, 4.50) is coming off victories over the Angels and Braves. He will attempt to win three consecutive starts for the first time since July 27-Aug. 9, 2013, when he beat the Mets, Brewers and Phillies and went seven innings each time. The NFL club and Rogers Communications announced Wednesday theyve put the beleaguered Bills Toronto Series — which features Buffalo playing exhibition and regular-season games at Rogers Centre — on hold for at least a year. With five weeks remaining in the NFL season, three teams remain in contention for the NFC North crown all separated by just a half game. The Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears both sit at 6-5, while the Green Bay Packers have a record of 5-5-1, coming off a 26-26 tie with the Minnesota Vikings. Its crunch time and one of these teams will come out on top of the division. Which one will it be? The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears are both currently playing without their starting quarterbacks; Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler. The Packers are 0-3-1 without Rodgers and the Bears are 2-3 in games without Cutler (or when he has exited with injury). Despite the injuries to stars within the division, the Lions have failed to pull away, winning just two of their previous five games. The division title, and right to host a home playoff game, could be won by any team. Both the Lions and Packers control their own destiny; if either team wins out, theyre in. The playoff chances of the Lions and the Packers could change dramatically when the two teams meet on Thursday. The Packers will have Matt Flynn under centre as Rodgers continues to rehab his broken collarbone. Flynn will be the fourth quarterback to start for the Packers this season in Rodgers absence but does have experience against the Lions. Flynn threw for 480 yards, six touchdowns and one interception against the Lions on January 1, 2012 when the Packers rested Rodgers in a meaningless game for them. Flynns career day on his second career start tied Packers records for yards and touchdowns in a game.dddddddddddd After Thursdays game, the Packers will play the Falcons (2-9), Cowboys (6-5), Steelers (5-6) and Bears (6-5). Wins over the Lions and Bears in the next five games would give the Packers a division record of 4-1-1. The Lions are reeling after two straight losses to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, a win over the Packers would put them on pace to win the division with season sweeps against the Packers and Bears and a 5-0 record in the division with a matchup against the Vikings looming on December 29. The Lions can clinch a playoff spot by winning out their schedule against the Packers, Eagles (6-5), Ravens (5-6), Giants (4-7) and Vikings (2-8-1). The Bears have survived life without Cutler thanks to the strong play of Josh McCown, who has thrown seven touchdowns and just one interception in five games this season. However, the Bears have struggled on defence, ranking 25th overall and dead last in the NFL against the run. The Bears need help from the Lions to clinch the division. If the Bears win out, the Lions must lose once in order for the Bears to make the playoffs and the Bears remaining schedule is against the Vikings, Cowboys, Browns (4-7), Eagles and Packers. The Bears and Packers both hope to have their starting quarterbacks playing in the Week 14 but, with both teams playing within the division this week, it may be too late. Thursday will provide a major clue as clue as to win will the division. Until then, we leave it up to you. Which team will win the NFC North? As always its Your! Call. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / after all thre AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Kyle Lowry picked up his fifth foul at around the midway point of the fourth quarter — then was called for his sixth 20 seconds later. It was the type of mistake that could prove costly for Toronto in the playoffs, but this time the Raptors were able to overcome it. DeMar DeRozan scored 14 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter, and the Raptors tied a franchise record for victories with a 116-107 win over the Detroit Pistons on Sunday. Lowry scored 28 points before fouling out with 5:51 remaining. “I was just glad the guys won it without me,” Lowry said. “DeMar was rested going into the fourth quarter, and he really took over down the stretch. Thats what happens when he is aggressive — he can take over a game.” The Raptors (47-33) had already clinched the Atlantic Division, and the victory over Detroit was their 10th in 14 games. Toronto has reached the 47-win mark for the third time. The Raptors went 47-35 in 2001 and 2007. Andre Drummond had 14 points and 17 rebounds for the Pistons in the final home game of their dismal season. Detroits Josh Smith missed a fourth straight game with tendinitis in his left knee. Detroit trailed by as many as 18 in the first half but rallied to take the lead late in the third quarter. But no matter what the Pistons did, DeRozan always seemed to have an answer in the fourth. “I understood if we were going to win the game, then I had to step it up,” DeRozan said. “I just tried to make plays for us and get a couple of easy baskets.” DeRozans three-point play put the Raptors ahead 97-95 and started an 11-2 run. His emphatic, right-handed dunk made it 107-99 and thrilled the vocal contingent of Toronto fans who were in attendance. “The fans were unbelievable,” Lowry said. “Ive never heard anything like that, especially not here.” The Raptors shot 74 per cent from the field during a brilliant first quarter and looked headed for a blowout. A three-point play by Terrence Ross put Toronto up 20-5, and an alley-oop to DeRozan made it 28-12. It was 42-26 at the end of the quarter, and DeRozans four-point play early in the second made it 46-28. “We had no rhythm early on and we didnt guard. You give a team 42 points in the first quarter, I dont know what your chance of winning is, but I would think in this league its pretty low,” Pistons interim coach John Loyer said. “Then you really have to fight uphill the whole way. But to our guys credit, they fought an uphill battle.” The Pistons trailed 63-49 at halftime but made a game of it by outscoring Toronto 37-24 in the third. Detroit dominated the boards, finishing with 21 offensive rebounds. Greg Monroe had 23 points and 10 rebounds. Lowrys fifth foul came with 6:11 remaining. He then fouled out going after a rebound on a missed shot by DeRozan. The Pistons couldnt take advantage, though. After a free throw by Drummond cut Detroits deficit to two, Jonas Valanciunas answered with a free throw and Ross made a 3-pointer for the Raptors. A layup by Patrick Patterson made it 105-97. NOTES: Detroits Tony Mitchell had four fouls in 6:16 of playing time in the first quarter. Then he didnt play again until the final minute of the fourth. … The Pistons werent thrilled with the officiating early. Monroe was called for a technical foul in the first, and Detroit was charged with a team technical in the second. … Toronto has scored at least 100 points in six straight games. Kelly was placed on injured reserve Saturday, becoming the third defensive starter for the Patriots to go on the list. Theyve already lost defensive tackle Vince Wilfork and linebacker Jerod Mayo, who both were chosen for several Pro Bowls. Kelly, a 10-year veteran, signed with New England after being released by Oakland in March. He missed the last three games after being injured Oct. 6 in a 13-6 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Patriots also signed offensive lineman Josh Kline to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. New England (6-2) is home against the Pittsburgh Steelers (2-5) on Sunday. Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, Detroit third baseman Miguel Cabrera and Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer each were selected for the fifth time.ST. PAUL, Minn. — Now that the Senators have played themselves back into contention, the hard work really begins. Kyle Turris had a goal and an assist, Robin Lehner made 27 saves for his second career shutout and Ottawa beat the Minnesota Wild 3-0 on Tuesday night. Clarke MacArthur and Erik Condra also scored for the Senators, who head home after earning seven of a possible eight points on their four-game road trip. “All weve done now is set the table to keep doing it,” said coach Paul MacLean, whose team has bounced back after winning only four times in its first 12 games. “Our team had been playing better and better as December rolled on, so the potential was there for us to have success on this road trip.” Despite controlling play and outshooting the Wild 15-3 in the first period, Ottawa led only 1-0 on MacArthurs 16th of the season. With the Wild hanging around thanks to another strong effort from goalie Darcy Kuemper (29 saves), Condra won a race with Marco Scandella to a puck in front of the net and made it 2-0 at 5:55 of the third. Turris scored on the power play at 17:38 of the third to put the game away. “Tough start. Our first period wasnt good enough,” Wild forward Jason Pominville said. “We were better in the second, but unfortunately gave up the first goal. Its tough to come back when you give up the first goal.” Playing recently without forwards Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise and top goalie Josh Harding, the Wild had won five of their last six, scoring 21 goals during that span. But scoring opportunities were tough to come by against Ottawa, which is a much better defensive team on the road than at home. When the Wild did get scoring chances, Lehner turned them away. Making his first start since losing 5-0 to Boston on Dec. 27, Lehner notched his first shutout since Feb. 28, 2012, against Boston. “It was kind of tough in the begiinning.dddddddddddd. I tried to stay focused, and didnt want to spin off in my head there,” Lehner said. “It feels good to come back and get a win.” Lehners play picked up right where regular goalie Craig Anderson left off. Anderson is 6-0-2 over his last eight starts. MacArthurs goal was his fifth in six games and it came after he redirected a centring pass from Turris into the net. Wild coach Mike Yeo wanted offside called on the play, and yelled at the officials from the bench as the teams lined up for the ensuing faceoff. “The bottom line is, when youre more engaged in the game, when youre on top of your game, things like that dont beat you,” Yeo said. “We werent good enough to win this hockey game tonight.” Kuemper was coming off his first career shutout on Sunday and has stopped 91 of 95 shots since being recalled from Iowa of the AHL on Jan. 2. It was the second time Minnesota was shut out this season and the third time Ottawa has blanked an opponent. “We knew that we were going to have to get on a run just to get back into the (playoff) picture, so now we cant let up,” Turris said. “We need to keep going. There are five or six teams trying to get into that last spot.” NOTES: Harding took part in the morning skate, but theres no timetable yet for his return to game action. He missed his seventh straight game, and 11th out of 13, due to his recovery from an adjustment to his multiple sclerosis treatment. … Parise skated on his own for the first time since before Christmas. He missed his 11th straight game because of a foot injury. “I cant predict what that means as far as when hell be in the lineup, but an important first step for sure,” Yeo said. … Colin Greening became the 40th player in Ottawa history to skate in 200 games. … Ottawa D Chris Phillips left midway through the third period after getting hit in the face with a puck. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / when Rose scored of CHICAGO — The Chicago Bulls were open all over the floor, so Joakim Noah kept collecting assists. Jumpers for Jimmy Butler and Kirk Hinrich. A dunk for Taj Gibson, another jumper for Butler, and on and on it went. The All-Star centre put on quite a show. Noah had 14 assists in his fifth career triple-double, leading the streaking Bulls to a 109-90 victory over the New York Knicks on Sunday. “Its really all my teammates,” he said. “I think were getting better every game.” Noah also had 13 points and 12 rebounds in his second triple-double of the season, but it was his deft passing that really stood out. It was the most assists by an NBA centre since at least the 1985-86 season and a franchise record for his position. “What can you say? He is playing MVP basketball,” Gibson said. “He is doing everything in all facets of the game.” Chicago had seven players score in double figures and set a franchise record by committing only three turnovers in its ninth win in the last 10 games. The Bulls also reached 100 points for the fourth consecutive game for the first time since Oct. 30-Nov. 5, 2010. D.J. Augustin had 21 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as Chicago (33-26) improved to 21-8 since Jan. 1 and a season-high seven games above .500 overall. Butler scored 19 points and Carlos Boozer had 14. “Weve hit a stretch where we have guys that are healthy playing that I think they know what to expect from each other,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “I think theyre playing to their strengths.” While the Bulls are galloping through the weak Eastern Conference, the Knicks are floundering. Carmelo Anthony scored 21 points and Tyson Chandler had 22 rebounds, but New York dropped its sixth consecutive game. The Knicks (21-39) are just 6-16 since Jan. 14. “Its embarrassing,” Anthony said. “Its frustrating and its embarrassing.” Swingman Iman Shumpert had three points on 1-for-6 shooting in his return to the lineup. He missed five games after he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during New Yorks 98-91 victory over New Orleans on Feb. 19. Noah rolled his right ankle at the beginning of the second half and got it re-taped before coming back in at the start of the fourth quarter. He heard more chants of “M-V-P! M-V-P!” when he went 1 for 2 at the line to make it 89-70 with 9:26 to go. There were more loud cheers when Jimmer Fredette checked in with 3:08 left after joining the Bulls earlier in the day. The sharp-shooting guard drilled a long jumper on his first shot, making it 107-83 with 2:16 remaining. Fredette, the 10th overall pick in the 2011 draft, was bought out by Sacramento on Thursday and cleared waivers on Saturday. His contract with the Bulls covers the rest of the season. “It was great. I mean, these guys did a great job the whole game and got a big lead and I was able to get into the game,” Fredette said. Led by Noah, the Bulls jumped all over the Knicks right at the start. He capped Chicagos opening 16-1 run with a driving layup and rebound tip-in. It just kept getting worse for New York, which shot 32 per cent from the field in the first quarter. Butler scored 10 points and also found Gibson for a big dunk as Chicago jumped to a 37-16 lead, setting a season high for points for the opening period. “They came out with more energy than we did, took advantage of us,” Chandler said. “On the defensive end, backdoor cuts that pretty much changed the game.” The lead grew to 25 early in the second before Anthony and Amare Stoudemire started to heat up. Anthony made a nice pass to Stoudemire for a reverse layup that got New York within nine with 3:33 to go. Anthony drove the baseline for a smooth jam, but Noah found Butler for a jumper that lifted Chicago to a 59-48 halftime lead. Noah had 11 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds at the break. “You cant come on the road and start like that and expect to win,” Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. NOTES: Anthony has said he plans to become a free agent this summer, and there was at least one sign calling on him to come to Chicago. “I cant see next year,” Anthony said. “I cant even see tomorrow at this point.” … Stoudemire and Tim Hardaway Jr. had 14 points apiece for New York. … The Bulls improved to 14-2 this season when they score 100 or more points. … The Bulls and Knicks have one more scheduled meeting, on April 13 in New York. They showered him with “MVP! MVP!” chants. In many ways, it seemed like hed never been gone. Rose scored 22 points in his long-awaited return to the United Center court to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 96-81 preseason victory over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night. The way Rose was dominating, it was hard to believe nearly 18 months had passed since he suited up for a game in this arena. The explosiveness was back after he spent last season recovering from knee surgery, and when he wasnt finishing drives, the former MVP was hitting his free throws. As for any emotions? Rose downplayed them. “Not at all,” he said. “I think Im past that, jitters and everything. For me, its just going out there and trying to compete and try to do better as a teammate and as a leader.” He got a thunderous ovation during the pregame introductions and proceeded to put on a show, scoring 18 in the first half. He had the crowd chanting “MVP! MVP!” at the end of the second quarter after he froze Peyton Siva with a wicked crossover and flipped the ball in off the glass over Andre Drummond as he crashed to the floor. Rose buried the free throw to complete the three-point play. Rose hit 6 of 9 shots and was 9 for 10 on free throws over 22 minutes after missing the previous game against Washington in Rio de Janeiro because of soreness in his surgically repaired left knee. “He didnt look like he lost a step to me,” Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks said. “He was as quick as hes ever been.” Carlos Boozer added 10 points and 11 rebounds. Joakim Noah had two points and eight rebounds after missing the first three preseason games because of a strained right groin. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with 18 points, but this night was all about Rose. “We are starting to see him find his rhythm,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. “The moves, the explosion, the power, the change in directions .dddddddddddd.. thats been there all along. Now, he has better balance and (is) playing in rhythm.” Rose hadnt played at the United Center since April 28, 2012, when the Bulls worst nightmare unfolded near the end of a playoff-opening victory over Philadelphia. There was Rose coming to a jump stop and crumbling to the floor with about 1:20 left in a game that was out of reach, a torn anterior cruciate ligament ending his season and sending top-seeded Chicago to a first-round exit. His recovery became a running soap opera last season, and it only escalated after he returned to practice in midseason. Should he return? Should he sit out the season? Rose and the Bulls never publicly ruled out a return, so the debate raged on. His image took a hit in some corners as the Bulls clawed their way through injuries and illnesses on the way to 45 wins and a second-round playoff exit. None of that seemed to matter on Wednesday. When the PA announcer bellowed before the game, “From Chicago! No. 1, Derrick Rose!” a deafening roar echoed through the arena. There was a loud cheer when Rose caught an outlet pass from Boozer after a miss by Detroits Drummond on the games first shot, and they were screaming again moments later when Rose scored off a feed from Noah. He added a neat layup, pumping in midair and drawing a few “oohs” and “ahs” from the crowd," and scored eight points before heading to the sideline with 3:59 left in the first quarter. It was a promising start punctuated by that brilliant move at the end of the half. It still remains to be seen how the knee will hold up once the season starts and how hell fare against stiffer competition, such as Miami in the opener. But the signs are good. “I was just trying to really be aggressive,” Rose said when asked about the play at the end of the half. “Thats the way I normally play. (If thats a sign) for whats to come, I hope so. For me, I was just trying to do anything to get to the basket.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / dont), then at least re YANGMEI, Taiwan — Suzann Pettersen had a hole-in-one and increased her lead to five strokes Friday after the second round of the LPGA Taiwan Championship. The defending champion aced the 133-yard second hole with a pitching wedge and finished with a 3-under 69 in swirling wind conditions to reach 7 under at Sunrise Golf and Country Club. “I called the shot. I hit it exactly how I wanted and was fortunate enough that I had a good break,” the Norwegian star said. “It was a very good shot. Its nice to get a hole in one when you actually call the shot in advance and then pull the trigger.” The second-ranked Pettersen was the only player in the 78-player field to break par in each round. “Today was a really tough day,” Pettersen said. “The wind got stronger and stronger and its definitely not easy out there. The wind and the conditions test every aspect of the game. I mean, even an 80-yard shot, its challenging enough to control the spin and know what the ball is going to do. Standing over putts, you feel the wind on the body. Its a mental test out there but its a fun challenge. Ive been playing really solid golf, and Im excited to be where Im at after two days.” She has three LPGA Tour victories this year, winning in Portland, Ore., and France in consecutive starts last month, and also won a Ladies European Tour event this year in China. “I think Im just getting to the point in my career that Id better just enjoy what I do,” Pettersen said. “Im tough enough on myself that, I mean, I can grind it out on the course and kind of be focused. But Im trying to enjoy this ride, because I guess Im maturing and you actually realize that you are fortunate to do what you do.” South Koreas Sun Young Yoo of South Korea and Spains Carlota Ciganda were tied for second. Yoo had a 69, and Ciganda shot 70. “I knew it was going to be windy today, so I just focused on where I want to start the ball, instead of focusing to getting close to the pin,” Yoo said. Taiwanese star Yani Tseng, the 2011 winner, followed her opening 76 with a 78 to drop 17 strokes back. Winless in 41 LPGA Tour since the 2012 Kia Classic, she has tumbled from first to 25th in the world ranking in seven months. Torontos Rebecca Lee-Bentham is tied for 45th at 7-over 151. Returning to the team halfway through last season, he went 7-1 with a 2.Im going to write in defence of Capitals RW Alex Ovechkin, if only because there have been some recent attacks and, while I can certainly live with them being directed at Ovechkin, the analytical process ought to be better, particularly if its going to be a hit piece on the leagues leading goal-scorer. Yes, Im writing to defend a player that is on pace for a 59-goal season, when the second-best goal-scorer in the NHL this season, Torontos Phil Kessel, is on pace for 43. Naturally, I didnt think that Ovechkin would be a player that needed much defending, but hes taken some hits lately. Im going to largely ignore his contributions on the power play because its not in any dispute that Ovechkin is great with the man advantage and can make a difference even when he doesnt score. On one side of the discussion, we have the Toronto Star, with their Department of Hockey Analytics, and while there are plenty of flaws in Ovechkins game, they somehow determined that his goals-for/against percentage was the way to illustrate the problem. Never mind that goals for/against percentage is essentially measuring plus-minus. Ill get to that in a moment but, first, also peruse the Hockey News piece by Ken Campbell who, after Ovechkin was minus-5 against Columbus, decided that Ovechkin has to decide what kind of player he is. After all, Ovechkin was minus-17 on the season after that game. Whats odd about using plus-minus to denigrate Ovechkins contributions is that anyone doing serious analytical work in hockey has been against using plus-minus because it involves so many factors beyond an individual players control (not least of which are the contributions of nine other skaters and two goaltenders when the game is 5-on-5) and, generally, involves small samples because goals are relatively rare events. Its funny to find myself in this position, because I can be a bit of an apologist for plus-minus. You spend enough time around the game and that thinking can be pretty common, and when the sample is large enough, you can get a pretty decent list of players at both ends of the spectrum. (For example, heres the list of players with the best cumulative plus-minus since 2000, and here are the worst.) But, Ive at least learned that there are many other factors that go into whether a player is a plus or minus player, and they must be considered if youre going to attempt to pass judgment on a single season or, especially, a portion of a season. So, lets take a look at some factors that are at play to make Alex Ovechkin a minus-17. First off, the shooting percentage of others on the ice with Ovechkin at 5-on-5 is ridiculously low. His 6.3% is only ahead of fourth-liners Aaron Volpatti and Jay Beagle among Capitals forwards. The suggestion could be made — and of course it has been — that Ovechkin isnt making those around him better, but here are the 5-on-5 on-ice shooting percentages when Ovechkin has been on the ice for the past five seasons: 10.36%, 8.62%, 8.05%, 11.76%, 9.09%. Youre really going to have to dig for reasons, other than poor luck and ineffective shooters, to explain even-strength shooting effectiveness declining by 40% over last season, especially when Ovechkin himself is shooting 10.6% (18 goals, 170 shots) at 5-on-5. Taking away Ovechkins 18 goals on 170 shots, leaves the other Capitals to score eight goals on 242 shots (3.3%) with Ovechkin on the ice. Marcus Johansson, his most common left winger, has one goal on 51 shots. This undeniably effects plus-miinus, right? Of course it does.dddddddddddd Give Ovechkin an average on-ice shooting percentage (say, 8%) and that is a difference of about seven goals. At the other end of the rink, Ovechkin is getting burned with a .909 save percentage at 5-on-5. Naturally, the argument will be that Ovechkins defensive play is what leads to that low percentage. Keep in mind, that percentage is well below career norms for him (.922 over the past five seasons, including this one) and ranks near the bottom on the Capitals roster. Use that typical save percentage, on 439 shots against, and that becomes a difference of 5-6 goals. So, why not take a look at where the shots are coming from with Ovechkin on the ice? According to Some Kind of Ninjas Shot Tracker, shots against the Capitals with Ovechkin on the ice at even strength, come from an average distance of 34.5 feet. In the previous five seasons, it has been 34.2, 36.6, 35.8, 34.6 and 35.9 feet on average. There can be an argument made, based on those average shot distances, that Ovechkins most effective defensive performances were in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 (the Dale Hunter season), but there really isnt a huge difference; goaltenders arent suddenly flummoxed by 34-foot shots when 36-footers are easy pickings. On top of that, best of luck trying to identify those particular seasons as anything close to Ovechkins best. Why? Because he scored 70 goals and 150 points in 157 games over those two seasons, producing the two lowest point scoring rates of his career. Yes, even lower than this season, when virtually no one else puts the puck in the net with him on the ice. Of course Ovechkin is not a defensive whiz, but that shouldnt stand as an indictment any more than it has for elite offensive players throughout the history of the game. Seriously, take a look at the Top 10 goal-scorers in the league, none of whom put the puck in the net like Ovechkin, and identify the ones that are notably strong backcheckers. Some are: Joe Pavelski, Alexander Steen, Patrick Sharp, but theres no reason to believe that right wingers Kessel or Corey Perry or Patrick Kane are doing brilliant work in the defensive end. Heres the thing: theyre all great players! Part of the trouble for Ovechkin is that the Capitals havent been able to win in the postseason, so he gets painted with the brush of failure for a whole host of team shortcomings. Thats what comes with being a superstar. This Capitals team is flawed. They rank in the bottom third of the league in Fenwick Close (measuring shot attempts, not including blocks, at even strength, with the score close), which is a good indication of team puck possession, yet Ovechkin has relatively solid possession numbers. If you want to break down a players overall contribution, and feel that you must use one statistic in order to do so (better yet, dont), then at least reduce the impact of others on the ice and look at the possession stats, because it wont matter that linemates arent finishing or that, for whatever reason, goaltenders arent stopping the puck. Shooting and save percentages fluctuate and while they affect perception — just ask Tyler Bozak — they dont get to the bottom of a players on-ice contribution, and so it is with Ovechkin this year, who is having a fine season, no matter what his plus-minus says. In terms of candidates looking to take over as Montreal Canadiens general manager – should that opportunity arise – there is no shortage of interest from those who would be on the outside looking in. Jacques Martin is the former coach of the Canadiens and still has time left on his deal. That move would come as a surprise to many. But there are a few reasons to consider Martin for the job. Hes a very smart hockey man and has the respect of many around the National Hockey League. He has previous NHL general managerial experience and hes owed as much as $3 million by the club. Julien BriseBois – who is currently an assistant general manager with the Tampa Bay Lightning under Steve Yzerman – would also be on the list of possibilities. BriseBois is a strong up-and-comer. Hes got great pedigree working alongside Yzerman and spent nine seasons in the Montreal Canadiens organization. He truly was Bob Gaineys right-hand man before Gauthier came in.dddddddddddd Many believe BriseBois might be the underdog. He might work alongside the likes of Pierre Lacroix or perhaps even a longshot like Serge Savard. Doug Risebrough is a consultant with the New York Rangers and won four Stanley Cups with the Canadiens as a player. He would also be on the list. The team could look at Claude Loiselle, currently an assistant general manager with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He is a smart guy whos very CBA-savvy and specializes in negotiation and arbitration. John Ferguson Jr. is now the director of pro scouting with the San Jose Sharks but comes with managerial experience. Hes very conversant when it comes to the language. The move to the top of the Canadiens wouldnt be an issue for him. Pierre McGuire, who is an NBC and former TSN analyst, has the support of Scotty Bowman. Pierre possesses an encyclopedic knowledge and knows the players well. Finally theres Marc Bergevin, who is an assistant general manager under Stan Bowman with the Chicago Blackhawks. He has been with the team a long, long time and is learning the craft. He may not be quite ready for the job, but he is getting close. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ing along with the crowd as she left stadium Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. On Sunday, Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist scored what could very well be the goal of the year. As he broke in on the net he was clearly held and the ref had his arm up to call a penalty, or penalty shot, but allowed Nyquist to continue on his breakaway first. If a second infraction was committed on Nyquist, a trip or a slash for example, before he scored the goal, would both calls be wiped out or would the Red Wings be awarded the goal and a power play. Thanks for taking the time to read my question. Matt NimmoBrampton CLICK HERE to watch the play in question. Matt: After being fouled by Matt Carle on a breakaway, Gustav Nyquist demonstrated amazing patience, persistence and the hands of a surgeon in order to regain puck possession with both skates well below the goal line and then slide the disk into the net past Ben Bishop from what appeared to be an impossible angle. Not many players, past or present, possess the skill and instinct required to spin and thread the needle at full speed to score a goal from that location on the ice. Your question, Matt, has several variables for us to consider. The assessment of a penalty shot is designed to restore a scoring opportunity which was lost as a result of a foul being committed by the offending team. On the initial part of this play all parameters of the rule were satisfied for referee Wes McCauley to impose a penalty shot once Gustav Nyquist was clearly fouled from behind by Matt Carle and denied a reasonable scoring opportunity. I am certain that McCauley intended to award a penalty shot to Nyquist had he not scored or other criteria were to develop during the delayed call. As Wes McCauley demonstrated, the referee must delay the call until the offending team gains possession of the puck. If during this delay, Gustav Nyquist or any other Red Wing player had regained a reasonable scoring opportunity (or opportunities) yet no goal resulted, the initial penalty shot call would revert to the assessment of a minor penalty. The next to impossible shot by Nyquist would not have qualified as him regaining a “reasonable scoring opportunity.” A penalty shot would have been awarded if the puck had not gone in the net as specified in rule 24.8 (iii)—The fact that he (Nyquist) got a shot off does not automatically eliminate this play from the penalty shot consideration criteria. If the foul was from behind and he was denied a “more” reasonable scoring opportunity due to the foul, then the penalty shot should be awarded. Allow me to answer your direct question, Matt, and also play out some other scenarios that could result, with the understanding that if the foul for which the penalty shot was awarded was such as to normally incur a minor penalty, then regardless of whether the penalty shot results in a goal or not, no further penalty shall be served. (Major, Match and Misconduct penalties would be assessed in addition to the penalty shot.) In addition, no penalty being served on the clock will expire when a goal is scored on a penalty shot. • If the penalty shot infraction committed by Matt Carle was such to incur a double-minor penalty (i.e. high-stick resulting in injury), the first minor penalty would not be assessed since the penalty shot was awarded to restore the lost scoring opportunity. The second minor penalty would be assessed and served regardless of whether the penalty shot results in a goal. It would be announced as a double-minor penalty and the player would serve two minutes only. (This would also be the assessment in the case where Nyquist (or Wings) scored prior to play being stopped to award the penalty shot resulting from a double minor infraction.) • If a Tampa player (or bench) was assessed an additional minor penalty on this play (separate from the hooking minor infraction to Carle that resulted in the penalty shot), the Tampa minor penalty would be served on the clock regardless of whether the penalty shot results in a goal. • Although it is not currently in the Officials Situation Handbook, conventional wisdom states (until further advised), if both of the above situations were to be satisfied (double minor plus a second minor penalty) one minor of the double minor infraction is eliminated to restore the lost scoring opportunity and the stand alone minor infraction is also assessed and served. A 5 on 3 manpower situation would occur regardless of whether the penalty shot results in a goal. (Presently no “Captains choice” extended in this scenario to allow for team option to play one man short for 4 minutes or two men short for 2 minutes). • Should two penalty shots be awarded to the same team at the same stoppage of play (two separate fouls), only one goal can be scored or awarded at a single stoppage of play. Should the first penalty shot result in a goal, the second shot would not be taken but the appropriate penalty would be assessed and served for the infraction committed. Thanks for the thought provoking question, Matt. I trust the answer pretty much covers all the bases for you. Cmon Ref extends Happy Birthday Wishes to Gordie Howe, who is 86 years young today. My bet is that “Mr. Hockey” would have also been able to score from the angle that Gustav Nyquist did last night in Hockeytown, USA. Téma: Jak postupovat / her starting or coming o NEW YORK — Major League Soccer has fined Toronto FC coach Ryan Nelsen an undisclosed amount for criticizing the officiating after Torontos 2-2 draw with Sporting Kansas City on Friday. Nelsen was upset with a straight red card given to defender Steven Caldwell for a high tackle on Sportings Antonio Dovale and with a penalty awarded to Kansas City late in the game. “If they gave Steven a yellow, nobody would have blinked an eyelid, nobody would have worried about it,” Nelsen told MLSSoccer.com after the game. “But because (referee Baldomero Toledo) has set a precedent throughout his refereeing career that he always likes to influence games, he decided to give a red for what was really a yellow card.” Nelsen also complained about a penalty assessed to Toronto defender Doneil Henry late in the game, which Kansas City converted to take a 2-1 lead. “In all honesty, theres not one person who has seen the replay that said that was a penalty,” Nelsen said. “So when youre down to 10 men, in the 84th minute, you have to be 100 per cent certain that its a penalty. One hundred per cent certain. Téma: Jak postupovat / team win a champio ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey has dropped its bid to host the 2020 European Championship final and semifinals, and will focus on hosting Euro 2024 alone. Turkeys football federation announced its decision ahead of Fridays bidding deadline despite Istanbul being a front-runner for the marquee matches with support already pledged by UEFA President Michel Platini. “We believe … we are at a point where we can undertake the entire tournament, not just the semifinals and final,” the Turkish federation said in a statement. The strategic move makes England and Germany favoured to receive the prestige package of final and semifinals for the 24-nation 2020 tournament. England has proposed Wembley Stadium in London and Germany has offered the Allianz Arena in Munich. UEFA will choose 13 host cities across Europe for Euro 2020 at a Sept. 19 meeting of its executive committee. Twelve winning bidders will each host three group-stage matches and a single knockout match from the last-16 or quarterfinals rounds. At least 20 UEFA member countries are expected to meet Fridays deadline to bid, including Italy and the Netherlands, plus newcomers Azerbaijan and Romania. A total of 32 countries expressed interest last September when Turkey was already a clear favourite for the final. Platini has publicly supported Turkeys claim since his native France won a close race between the countries in May 2010 to host Euro 2016. Turkey seemed sure to host Euro 2020 alone but the campaign was complicated by Istanbuls insistence on bidding for the 2020 Olympics, scheduled weeks later. Despite UEFA and Platini seeking a firm commitment for its tournament, Turkeys political and sporting leaders proceeded in the Olympics contest won by Tokyo last year. Turkey automatically becomes the favourite to host Euro 2024, with one of its probable opponents — England or Germany |
