LONDON — Chelsea has signed St. Etienne defender Kurt Zouma on a 5 1/2-year contract but he will remain on loan at the French club until the end of the season. The 19-year-old centre back has made 52 league appearances for the Ligue 1 team and scored four goals. Zouma has represented Frances youth teams and he was part of the group that won the Under-20 World Cup last year. Chelsea has already signed midfielder Nemanja Matic and winger Mohamed Salah in the January transfer window. whole… nfl jerseys . Beaulieu has four goals and 10 assists in 32 AHL games and had one assist in five games for Montreal this season. The 23-year-old Nattinen has five goals and six assists in 37 games for the Bulldogs this season. whole… jerseys . It was almost exactly like the way Babcocks Team Canada won gold at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The result was a 2-1 Red Wings victory on Swedish Olympian Gustav Nyquists rebound goal with 28 seconds left in overtime. http://www.wholesalejerseychinastore.com/. The Jets jumped into a quick 2-0 lead in the first on goals by Zach Bogosian (3rd) and Devin Setoguchi (9th) 1:05 apart. Toby Enstrom and Andrew Ladd drew assists on the Bogosian goal, a point shot that seemed to dip and get by former Moose goaltender Eddie Lack. nfl jerseys china . Kane returned to score a goal and added an assist, leading the Winnipeg Jets to a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night. cheap jerseys . And it showed Thursday night. The Canadiens, playing in their second game in as many days, however, got a good performance in the end from their backup goaltender as he filled in for an injured Olympic gold medallist .MELBOURNE, Australia — Two-time cancer survivor Jarrod Lyle made the weekend cut in the Australian Masters in his first event in 20 month. Lyle followed his opening 72 and with a 71 on Friday to reach 1-over 143 at Royal Melbourne. The Australian hadnt played a tournament since a second bout with myeloid leukemia in early 2012 after having first fought off the disease when he was 17. The 32-year-old Lyle said his legs felt heavy but he would draw on his “fighting instinct” to finish the weekend. “If I have to crawl those last 18 holes, Im crawling them,” Lyle said.dddddddddddd “Nothings going to stop me from finishing.” Lyle, then a regular on the U.S. PGA Tour, was diagnosed with leukemia in March 2012 just before the birth of daughter Lusi. Lyles wife, Briony, became pregnant despite medical advice that Lyles first bout of cancer and the resulting chemotherapy would leave him sterile. He has a medical exemption to return to the PGA Tour whenever he feels hes ready. ’ ’ ’

Did you think that the Swedish game was tailored against your skillset? Actually I was surprised how they played over there. It was a lot of trap hockey, it was pretty tight checking, I thought it would be a lot more wide open with dangling. Id say the rules were not as suited towards me, as they dont allow big body checks, youll get a penalty for roughing or boarding if you hit a guy too hard, so theres a little big of an adjustment there. I was more surprised how they played over there than the dangling Russian style I kind of pictured. Was there any culture shock going over? Yeah, definitely. I think day-to-day life away from the rink, and even at the rink, your schedule with practice, the game day set up that theyve been doing there for years, its all totally different – even practice days – I hadnt done some of the drills before. It was free-flowing big big ice drills with lots of turning. But I brought my family and my kids over there, so getting used to how things operate, how restaurants work, how every little thing you are used to here is kind of different. Did your family enjoy being there? Yeah I think they did. We had our baby like two weeks before wed gone over there so that was not good [laughs] for the wife off the start. It turned out she had a really good time though and our family enjoyed it. My kid was in preschool and learned a little bit of Swedish, a young kid takes everything in well, so it ended up being a good family experience. Happy to be back in Canada? Yeah, very happy. Your Twitter handle @Armdog has over 163k followers, do you like interacting with people on Twitter? I love Twitter actually. My wife gives me a hard time because Im on there all the time, but I love checking it out for my own personal news pick ups and things that Im interested in following, and hockey and other people in general. I also like the fan interaction, I like getting @ mentions, its pretty fun, its like somebody has my phone number but they dont have my phone number, like I could send you a text message and youll see it. What was it like playing for both sides of the Toronto/Montreal rivalry? It was great. I dont know how many times Ive said it but I feel very lucky to have played on both organizations, it was two great experiences. It was awesome living in both cities. It was great for my family, people were friendly, both cities were awesome. Putting on those jerseys was something special, it was something else. Did you have any preference? I know you were a Montreal Canadiens fan growing up. Yeah, I grew up as a Habs fan so Id probably say that hit home for me a lot more. Growing up being a Habs fan, I was in the Montreal Canadiens fan club as a kid, which I think had a five-dollar entry fee [laughs] you would get a pendant that says youre a part of the fan club, which had up on my wall, but to get to put on that jersey after being a fan as a kid was like a dream come true. I wish it hadnt been during a lockout year, it was something to remember. Now that youve had time to reflect, what do you think of this video? Oh did you like that [laughs]? It was certainly something else. That was McLovin [as Maxime Talbot is on the screen]. You know what, that was put on Jay Leno as like the worst car commercial hes ever seen. I was sleeping and we had a game the next day and I was in bed and my wifes parents were visiting and they came upstairs and were like “oh my gosh, you were just on Jay Lenos worst car commercial,” and I immediately felt myself sweating and getting red and embarrassed because thats pretty big time you know. I was just like “oh my God,” because I knew it was pretty cheesy and bad when we did it, but its something fun, its kind of a YouTube sensation. Did you ever think it would blow up like it did? No, not off the start, I guess it kind of fizzled out now, but people still talk about it or bring it up on Twitter especially. It still kind of lingers around but it did kind of take off at the start which I think what the company was hoping for [laughs]. Changing topics, who do you have for the Stanley Cup this year? I hope my buddies in Montreal can pull off the series and get to the finals, but I think Chicago/LA are pretty strong. I think yesterday on Off The Record I think I picked Chicago in the series, but I dont know, I think L.A is just built for playoff series, I think theyll probably win. When somebody asks, who is the best playing in the NHL? You say.. There are so many guys that are different players. I dont think you can question what Toews have done for his teams that hes played on. I remember him when he was 18 or 19, and he just carried his World Junior team to Gold and played with us as a young guy at the World Championships as a young guy and was a big part of the team at a young age. That guys just got it. Crosby or Toews, just with their resumes, what theyve done with their teams in their careers is just incredible. Can you go bar down? I can go cheddar down mostly [laughs]. Finally, whats next for Colby Armstrong? Just a summer of training and getting ready. Hopefully find a job over here that could take off and make me happy. Thats what Im looking to do. Youll have to keep your eyes on me and see where I land or see if I could get anything. Ekblad led all defencemen with 23 goals and finished tied for fifth in scoring among blue-liners with 53 points in 58.OAKLAND, Calif. – After sewage backups, toilet overflows and foul smells surfaced the past two years, nothing at the Oakland Coliseum surprises the home team anymore. Eric Sogard drove in two runs and threw out a runner at the plate, Scott Kazmir pitched another gem and the Oakland Athletics stayed focused after a delay caused by a malfunction with the outfield lights to beat the New York Yankees 5-1 on Saturday night. “Thats the Coliseum for ya,” Sogard said. “Thats why we love this place. Never know what youre gonna get.” The game was stopped for 38 minutes in the middle of the fourth inning because of an outage to the panel of lights above left field. Players from both sides said that the lights never initially turned on. The As said the circuit breaker turned off and had to be manually reset. “Maybe some carry over from Friday the 13th the night before. I dont know,” As manager Bob Melvin said. New Yorks four-game winning streak ended because of its own errors. Two passed balls by backup catcher John Ryan Murphy, who was inserted in the lineup after Mark Teixeira was scratched with what he called a spasm in his midback, helped Oakland score twice in the fifth. But the delay surely didnt help Hiroki Kuroda (4-5), who compared the stoppage to a rain delay. He allowed four runs and five hits in 4 2-3 innings. That included a perfect fourth after the delay before he lost his rhythm in the fifth — and so did his catcher. “The fact that I couldnt protect (the lead) was really frustrating,” Kuroda said. Kazmir (8-2) allowed one unearned run and three hits in six innings for his third straight win. Dan Otero pitched two perfect innings before Sean Doolittle closed out the Yankees in the ninth. Kazmir stayed warm in the clubhouse during the delay and then threw a simulated inning in the bullpen, which wrapped up just as the lights came back on. “It worked out perfectly,” Kazmir said. Brian McCann was switched from catcher to first base after the Yankees took Teiixeira out about 30 minutes before the game.dddddddddddd Murphy moved into the catchers spot. Sogard walked, advanced to second on Coco Crisps single and moved to third on Murphys first passed ball. Sogard scored on John Jasos groundout, and Crisp came home on Murphys second passed ball to put the As up 4-1. After being held out of Friday nights game to rest his sore right ankle, Sogard came through at the plate and in the field. Sogard lined a two-out, two-run single to centre to give the As a 2-0 lead in the second, and he cut down Kelly Johnson at home after fielding a grounder by Jeter in the fifth. New York scored its only run in the third when shortstop Andy Parrino sailed his throw to first on Derek Jeters grounder. Parrino got the run back when he hit an RBI double in the sixth. But the latest maintenance issue at Oaklands dual-purpose ballpark overshadowed the Kazmirs latest gem and anything else the As did on the field. The aging Coliseum, which is shared with the NFLs Oakland Raiders and is the only stadium in the country still home to teams from both leagues, has had multiple plumbing problems the past two years. The As have been trying for years to move to a new ballpark, including in San Jose, which the San Francisco Giants contend is part of their territory. The As are in the process of negotiating a new lease at the Coliseum, which opened in 1966, though its unclear what — if any — facility upgrades will be included in a potential deal. NOTES: Josh Donaldson was ejected for arguing with plate umpire Hal Gibson at the end of the seventh inning. Donaldson is in an 0-for-31 skid after going hitless in all four plate appearances. … Yankees CF Jacoby Ellsubury had his 17-game hitting streak snapped after going 0-for-3 with a walk. … Yankees 2B Brian Roberts (sore right knee) sat out and DH Carlos Beltran had the day off. … The Yankees send lefty Vidal Nuno (1-4, 4.97 ERA) to the mound opposite Oaklands Jesse Chavez (5-4, 3.04 ERA) in Sundays series finale. ’ ’ ’

STILLWATER, Okla. — Clint Chelfs latest career day against Baylor sent another shockwave through the top of the BCS standings, and put Oklahoma State within reach of a Big 12 Conference championship in the process. The Oklahoma State (10-1, 7-1 Big 12) quarterback passed for a career-high 370 yards and accounted for four touchdowns as the No. 11 Cowboys dismantled the No. 3 Bears 49-17 Saturday night. Chelf, who was 19 of 25 passing, has thrown for 703 yards in his last two games against Baylor (9-1, 6-1) — including last years 41-34 loss in Waco. His latest performance came in a win, a crushing one that delighted the record crowd of 60,218 in Boone Pickens Stadium. “I couldnt be more proud of what hes accomplished,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. “Hes been a good leader and he does it quiet. Hes been humbled, and for that hes had success.” The loss for the Bears almost certainly dooms their national title aspirations, leaving Alabama, Florida State and Ohio State as the lone remaining unbeatens near the top of the BCS standings. Theyll certainly line up in that order when the new numbers come out Sunday. Bryce Petty was 28 of 48 passing for 359 yards for Baylor, which had its school-record 13-game winning streak snapped and hasnt won in Stillwater since 1939. “This is very difficult,” Baylor safety Ahmad Dixon said. "… This hurts. Our chances of still winning the Big 12 arent over, but we wanted something bigger than that. “We wanted something thats never been done before, and that was to go to a national championship. That dream came down.” Oklahoma State has won 10 or more games in three of the last four seasons, and can win the Big 12 by beating rival Oklahoma at home in two weeks. If Chelf, who lost the starting job earlier this season for the Cowboys, plays like he did on Saturday night against the Sooners, a win is certainly possible. The senior threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score against the Bears, against whom he set his previous career best with 333 yards passing last year. He also had a 48-yard reception and finished with 438 yards of total offence. Tracy Moore finished with five catches for 126 for Oklahoma State. While the Cowboys had 594 yards of total offence, it was the usually high-flying Bears who were grounded. Baylor entered Saturday averaging a national-best 61.2 points and 684.8 yards per game, but they had no answers for a Cowboys defence that held the high-powered attack in check most of the way. Oklahoma State forced three Baylor fumbles and also stopped the Bears on two key fourth-down attempts in the second half — both which led to Cowboys touchdowns. Baylor finished with 453 yards of total offence, and Antwan Goodley had 10 catches for 118 yards receiving. “(Oklahoma State) played extremely well, played with a lot of energy, made plays when they needed to make plays,” Baylor coach Art Briles said. After falling behind 35-3, Baylor appeared on the verge of cutting the lead to 35-17 early in the fourth quarter. However, Petty fumbled after a wild snap deep in Oklahoma State territory and Tyler Patmon returned it 78 yards for a touchdown to put the Cowboys up 42-10. The score put the exclamation point on a thoroughly one-sided performance. Chelf lost the starting job earlier this year to sophomore J.W. Walsh, slowly working his way back to the role of top option for the Cowboys. The senior accounted for four touchdowns in last weeks win over Texas, but he was at his best Saturday night — capping the stunning performance with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jhajuan Seales. As has been the case for most of the season, Gundy didnt make Chelf available to talk following Saturdays win. His coach, however, had plenty to say about his recent performances. “Im happy with the groove hes in right now,” Gundy said. “And so, we just want to let him keep going.” Baylor appeared on its way to the early lead when Petty broke free on a third-and-2 on the Bears second possession — with no defenders in his path to the end zone. However, the quarterback — who entered the game leading the Big 12 in total offence — tripped short of the end zone and fell down at the Oklahoma State 1. Two plays later, Shock Linwood fumbled when he tried to stretch out for the touchdown — with James Castleman knocking the ball loose and recovering for the Cowboys. That was followed by a 99-yard touchdown drive for Oklahoma State. Kye Staley capped the quick turn of momentum with a 2-yard touchdown run to put the Cowboys up 7-0, a drive that included a 51-yard pass from Chelf to Marcell Ateman. Oklahoma State pushed its lead to 14-0 in the second quarter when Chelf found Charlie Moore for a 12-yard touchdown over the middle. The completion was Chelfs 11th-straight of the game. Chelf didnt have an incompletion until Oklahoma States final possession of the first half, and he finished the half 12 of 13 passing for 238 yards. “Hes a leader,” Oklahoma State wide receiver Josh Stewart said. “Thats what we want from our quarterback, and he gives us everything we need.” The Cowboys held Baylor to three three-and-outs on seven possessions in the first half. The Bears entered the game having been held to 17 three-and-outs all season, and their three points at halftime was their lowest first-half total since being held scoreless by Oklahoma State in 2011. “Well bounce back from this,” Petty said. “Im not going anywhere, and were not going anywhere. We still have a lot to accomplish.” cheap china jerseys . And it showed Thursday night. The Canadiens, playing in their second game in as many days, however, got a good performance in the end from their backup goaltender as he filled in for an injured Olympic gold medallist . cheap jerseys from china . At the moment, neither do the decision-makers. Dustin McGowan is front-and-centre in this ongoing saga, having thrust himself into the conversation with a dominating three-inning performance against the Phillies on Thursday, just hours after manager John Gibbons appeared to pour cold water on the notion. http://www.cheapjerseyschina.cc/. – Holden Cook and Kyle Hope combined for seven points as the Owen Sound Attack downed the visiting Barrie Colts 5-1 on Wednesday in Ontario Hockey League action. cheap jerseys china . Wedge will manage the final three games of this season against Oakland before the Mariners begin a search for a new manager. “Its got to the point where its painfully obvious to me that I just wasnt going to be able to move forward with this organization,” Wedge said before Fridays game. cheap nfl jerseys china . The Michigan lineman faces three assault charges stemming from an incident in December, according to a report from ESPN. The report states Lewan is scheduled to be arraigned in April on one count of aggravated assault and two counts of assault or assault and battery. Some notes from the first week of MLB action, including Blackmon, Solarte, Bonifacio, Belt, Eovaldi, K-Rod and more. Charlie Blackmon, CF, Colorado – A 27-year-old who just surpassed 500 career plate appearances, Blackmon hit .309 with an .803 OPS in 82 games last season, and has opened this year with 13 hits in 24 at-bats (.542). As long as he hits, and a minor-league batting average of .309 with an .843 OPS in 2222 plate appearances is an indication that is a possibility, then Blackmon should stay ahead of Drew Stubbs in the Rockies outfield rotation. Josh Hamilton, LF, L.A. Angels of Anaheim – After last seasons flameout, Hamilton is an interesting rebound option in 2014. Remember, hes one season removed from 43 homers, 128 RBI and 103 runs scored for Texas. In the crazy small sample of the first week, Hamilton has at least been showing a touch more plate discipline, with 12.5% swinging strikes his lowest rate since his rookie year in 2007. Yangervis Solarte, 3B, N.Y. Yankees – 26-year-old rookie flew under the radar when the Yankees added veteran infielders Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts in the offseason, but Solarte hit .429, with a 1.061 OPS in the spring, hitting .282 with a .736 OPS at Triple-A over the past couple seasons. Hes off to a nice start (8-for-17, .471 AVG, 1.232 OPS) for the Yankees; certainly fortunate with a .500 batting average on balls in play, but also making a lot of contact, with only 2.7% swinging strikes. Chris Colabello, DH, Minnesota – The 30-year-old DH had his first major league plate appearances last year, when he hits .194 with a .631 OPS in 181 plate appearances for the Twins, but he mashed in the minors (24 HR, .352 AVG, 1.066 OPS in 89 GP at AAA last year) and is off to a strong start this year, leading the American League with 11 RBI while hitting .391 with a 1.112 OPS. Hes been more fortunate (.500 BABIP) than can be expected, but Colabello also has higher line-drive and flyball rate, with a lower groundball and infield flyball rate compared to last season. Xander Bogaerts, SS, Boston – Coming into the year as the leading candidate for AL Rookie of the Year, 21-year-old Bogaerts hasnt done anything to slow down that talk, hitting .381 with a .956 OPS, hitting fifth in the Red Sox lineup. Emilio Bonifacio, CF, Chicago Cubs – Its a wonder that a player with a .628 OPS over the previous two seasons would be playing regularly, but such is the situation with the Cubs, and 28-year-old Bonifacio is off to a blazing start, hitting .500 with a 1.120 OPS and tied for the MLB lead with four steals. Bonifacio has always been valuable on the bases, stealing 98 bases on 120 attempts (81.7%) in the previous three seasons, but he hasnt always been able to hit enough to hold down an everyday job. Mark Trumbo, LF, Arizona – Over tthe last three years, four players — Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre, Jose Bautista and Jay Bruce — have hit more home runs than Trumbos 95, and hes crushed five in nine games to start the year.dddddddddddd Trumbo, whose outfield defence is not a strength, is hitting enough that he wont have any concerns over playing time. Brandon Belt, 1B, San Francisco – The progress has been steady, if sometimes slow, for the 25-year-old first baseman, but Belt has mashed four home runs early. Not to rain on his parade, since Belt is a nice breakout candidate, but hes been unusually aggressive at the plate early, seeing fewer pitches per plate appearance (3.65) than his standard (3.96 for his career) and hasnt walked once in 31 plate appearances. Yovani Gallardo, RHP, Milwaukee – Responsible for murdering fantasy teams (including one of my own) last season, when he had a career-high 4.18 ERA, Gallardo emerged unscathed from his first two starts. Dont get too carried away with the praise, however, as his strikeout rate (seven in 12 2/3 IP) is way low and hes been fortunate enough to strand every runner thats reached base against him. Nate Eovaldi, RHP, Miami – A 3.46 ERA in two starts is nice for the 24-year-old, but there are more promising results in underlying numbers. For one thing, Eovaldi has been a hard thrower who struggled to miss bats in the past and his average fastball is still up near 96 MPH, but hes missed more bats, and his 14 strikeouts in 13 innings (9.7 K/9) is far better than the 179 strikeouts in 260 1/3 innings (6.4 K/9) to start his career. Francisco Rodriguez, RHP, Milwaukee – The 32-year-old received the early closing opportunities for the Brewers, while they waited for Jim Henderson to find his form. Even without great velocity, K-Rod has six strikeouts in three innings, with a couple of saves, so its not like the Brewers figure to be rushing him out of the role. Pedro Strop, RHP, Chicago Cubs – A 28-year-old journeyman with four career saves entering the year, Strop is pushing Jose Veras, who has six walks in 1 2/3 innings, for the closers role with the Cubs. Strop throws hard enough, though hes been slider-heavy in the early going this year. Jose Valverde, RHP, N.Y. Mets – With word that Bobby Parnell is undergoing Tommy John surgery, the Mets closer role is open for 36-year-old Valverde, who busted out of the role in Detroit last season after allowing six home runs in 19 1/3 IP. With six strikeouts in 3 1/3 IP, Valverde is off to a good start in that spot, but has spent a career walking the high wire as a closer who rarely makes it look easy. MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact have come to terms with Spanish midfielder Gorka Larrea. The 30-year-old Larrea played 22 games in Spains La Liga with Real Sociedad from 2003 to 2006 and Levante UD in 2010. He also played more than 100 games in Spanish second division with Real Sociedad, UD Almeria, Levante UD and CD Numancia. The central midfielder has also appeared in several Copa del Rey games over his career. COLUMBIA, S.C. — Injured All-American Jadeveon Clowney is working hard so he can play against Arkansas on Saturday, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said on Tuesday. Spurrier said hell know later in the week if Clowney has recovered enough from a strained muscle near his ribcage to get back on the field. Since the 6-foot-6, 274-pound defensive end said shortly before kickoff last Saturday against Kentucky that he was in too much pain to play, there have been questions about whether the potential No. 1 pick in next years NFL draft was shutting it down for the season. Spurrier doesnt believe Clowney is done but didnt rule out the possibility. “Let me say this about Jadeveon, if he never plays another snap, we all should be thankful and appreciative that he came to South Carolina,” Spurrier said. "Weve won 26 games, two 11-2 years, the greatest seasons weve had in 120 years. “So none of us need to be upset at Jadeveon. None of us.” Spurrier certainly sounded upset Saturday night, saying that if the defensive end didnt want to play for the Gamecocks, he didnt have to and the program would “move on.” The coach said since then, he has spoken with Clowney and is confident the junior is committed to finishing the season on the field. “Im all for Jadeveon and his future,” Spurier said. " When he is ready to play were going to put him out there. He has been coming to treatment, I think, twice a day and told me he is doing everything he can to try to get ready to play." The eighth-year coach said he was more upset Saturday with how he learned of Clowneys status. Spurrier said he was more frustrated that proper protocol wasnt followed and that word of Clowneys absence in the 35-28 win over Kentucky didnt come from trainers or team doctors. Instead, Spurrier learned about it when he saw Clowney without pads on prior to kickoff. “Obviously, we all handled it poorly. All of us did,” Spurrier said. Clowney is expected to talk with the media later Tuesday. It has not been the season expected out of the SECs reigning defensive player of the year. He has just two sacks and 12 tackles. After setting a school mark of 23 1/2 tackles for loss last season, Clowneys got just three stops behind the line of scrimmage this year. Clowney was one of the most talked about player in college football after finishing last season with his helmet-popping hit on Michigans Vincent Smith in the Outback Bowl. Some analysts projected that Clowney would have been the top pick in last years NFL draft as a sophomore, prompting talk he should sit out this year instead of risking on field injury. Clowney eventually purchased $5 million worth of NCAA-allowed insurance. Clowney spent a summer in the spotlight. “The Hit” won the ESPY Award for best play while Clowney met with LeBron James and other celebrities. Spurrier cut off access to Clowney once fall camp began, but the issues continued. When the season began, Clowney looked winded and was bothered by the flu in the opener against North Carolina. He needed IV fluids the day before the Gamecocks played UCF because of illness. Hes been bothered by a flare-up of bone spurs in his right foot and now has the muscle strain that kept him from a practice last Thursday and again on Monday. Clowneys also been frustrated that South Carolinas defence is not playing as well as it had his first two seasons. He said after a 41-30 loss at Georgia that coaches should move him around more, then said the guys on defence had to improve after giving up most of an 18-point lead in a 28-25 win at UCF. Arkansas coach Bart Bielema hopes Clowneys ready to go for his offence. "As is the case any time that youre in this type of situation, Im sure hes going to play, Bielema said. “I think its competitive nature. Its kind of like when we were getting ready to play A&M. At the beginning of this season, people were taking about him (Manziel) being suspended or not.” Gamecocks quarterback Connor Shaw said Clowneys situation has not created a problem in the locker room. “All I know is Clowneys helped us win a lot of games,” he said. “Its more of a big deal to everyone else instead of us.” jerseys from china . Holmes was a 3-foot putt away from winning the Wells Fargo Championship when he backed away to size up the situation. For the second straight week, the top six remain the same in the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings, but there is some jockeying for position after that point. The Detroit Tigers have continued their late season surge, going 27-11 since the beginning of August, and have climbed from ninth to seventh spot in the rankings. While Justin Verlander has obviously been terrific, newcomer Doug Fister has bolstered the staff, going 5-1 with a 2.28 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in eight starts with the Tigers. Seven wins in the last eight games also vaults the Tampa BBay Rays from 10 to eight, closing in on the Boston Red Sox in the AL Wildcard race.dddddddddddd Tampa Bays chances could be improved even more, as they are calling up Matt Moore, widely-regarded as the top pitching prospect in the game. San Franciscos season-long scoring woes are finally catching up to them and theyve slipped from eighth to 11th. The Toronto Blue Jays keep the status quo, in 13th, though they have a nice story with Adam Loewen belting his first major league home run since converting from pitcher to outfielder. ’ ’ ’

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Arizona general manager Kevin Towers had been talking trade with Chicago White Sox GM Rick Hahn for a month when he arrived at the winter meetings last weekend and sent a text to Angels counterpart Jerry Dipoto. “Can I get your attention in that Trumbo deal for Skaggs and Eaton?” he remembered writing. “Sure, why dont you come down and talk?” Dipoto quickly replied, according to Towers. Two days later, a three-team trade fell into place. Chicago acquired outfielder Adam Eaton from Arizona for left-hander Hector Santiago, and the Diamondbacks then sent Santiago and left-hander Tyler Skaggs to the Angels for slugger Mark Trumbo. Arizona also will receive a player to be named or cash from each of the other clubs. “Its nice when youre able to have three clubs up here all feeling good about things,” Hahn said Tuesday during a news conference. “Obviously, as Jerry pointed out, it does hurt a little bit, but it costs something to get something.” Trumbo, 27, hit .234 with 34 home runs and 100 RBIs this year, playing first base in 123 games because Albert Pujols was hurt. Despite hitting 95 homers during the last three seasons, the sometimes outfielder was deemed superfluous by Los Angeles, which craved starting pitching behind Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson and Garrett Richards. “Right now wed line up with both guys as starters,” Dipoto said. Trumbo was used to hearing his name in trade talk. “I think its been rumoured for years now,” he said. “I knew that this one was a serious thing.” Hell join a batting order that includes Paul Goldschmidt, who led the NL with 125 RBIs and tied for the league lead in home runs with 36. “We all addressed some of our biggest needs,” Towers said. “Well give him some protection.” After finishing last in the AL Central with their worst record since 1970 at 63-99, the White Sox were looking to make changes, and Hahn is counting on Eaton to provide a spark. “We lacked a little bit of energy and a little edge,” Hahn said. “This is a dirt-bag baseball player. This is a guy who has been described to me by someone at this table with words I cant use.” Santiago, 25, was 4-9 with a 3.56 ERA in 23 starts and 11 relief appearances. His fastball velocity has dipped from 93.8 mph in 2011 to 92.8 in 2012 to 91.8 last season, according to fangraphs.com. Eaton, a 25-year-old speedy leadoff hitter, was sidelined from spring training until July 9 by a sprained left elbow. He hit .252 with three homers, 22 RBIs and 44 strikeouts in 250 at-bats for the Diamondbacks this year. Skaggs, 22, went to Santa Monica High School, was taken by the Angels with the 40th overall selection of the 2009 amateur draft and was dealt to the Diamondbacks in August 2010 to complete the trade that brought Dan Haren to Los Angeles. Skaggs made his big league debut in 2012, when he had six starts, but spent much of this year in the minors. He was 2-3 with a 5.12 ERA in seven starts this year for Arizona, leaving him with a 3-6 career mark. Trumbo is eligible for salary arbitration for the first time this winter. Santiago is on track to be eligible after next season, Eaton following 2015 season and Skaggs after the 2016 season. For Towers, the deal meant mission accomplished. “Weve got a guy that we can control now for three years. Two of the probably better right-handed power bats in the National League,” he said, “Excited for spring training.” . Howards plan worked. He had 17 points and 10 rebounds by halftime on the way to a 26-point night to help the Rockets cruise to their third straight win, a 119-98 victory over the Kings. Howard also had 13 rebounds and four blocks and James Harden added 24 points and nine assists before the pair went to the bench for the fourth quarter. “The last couple of games against those guys, I didnt come out aggressive like I needed to on both ends of the floor,” Howard said. “Ive been looking at some film and I wanted to get off to a better start. Its not just about scoring. Its defence and things like that.” The Rockets took the lead midway through the first quarter and didnt trail again. The Kings struggled after losing top scorers Rudy Gay and DeMarcus Cousins to injuries before halftime. Gay, who tied a career high with 41 points on Tuesday night, injured his left Achilles tendon in the first quarter and Cousins sprained his left ankle in the second. Sacramento coach Mike Malone didnt have any more information on the injuries after the game and said that theyd know more on Thursday. “It was a big loss to lose both of those guys in the first half,” Malone said. “Unfortunately, those other guys that were able to play didnt respond. We got our (tails) kicked tonight and were a no-excuse team … so the fact that we guarded no one tonight has nothing to do with them not being able to play in the second half.” Derrick Williams scored 22 points with 11 rebounds and Isaiah Thomas added 20 points for the Kings. Houston led by 15 points entering the fourth quarter and padded its lead with Harden and Howard relaxing on the bench in their warm-up shirts. They used a 15-3 spurt in the first 4 1/2 minutes of the fourth to make it 103-76. Sacramento missed eight shots, including three layups in that span, and its only points came on free throws by Williams. The Rockets were up by nine points early in the third quarter before scoring 10 straight points to stretch their advantage to 65-46. Chandler Parsoons and Patrick Beverley both had 3-pointers in that stretch.dddddddddddd Jimmer Fredette made a 3-pointer that cut Houstons lead to 11 points with about eight minutes left in the second quarter. Cousins went down on Sacramentos next possession when he was knocked to the court on a hard foul by Beverley as he drove to the basket. Beverley stood over him for a second while he was down and Beverley received a technical. Cousins entered the game leading the team in scoring (23.1) and rebounding (11.7). He scored just two points before getting hurt, snapping a streak of 30 straight games with at least 10 points. The Rockets used a 6-2 spurt after that to extend their lead to 44-29. Sacramento got within eight two times after that in the second quarter, but Howard scored six points with two alley-oop dunks in the last 1 1/2 minutes of the first half to help the Rockets lead 55-44 at the break. The Kings were up by five points early before Houston used a 14-5 run to take a 21-17 lead with about three minutes left in the first quarter. Gay, who entered the game averaging 20.2 points, was injured at the beginning of that run, which was powered by eight points from Harden. Houston coach Kevin McHale was impressed with Hardens work on Wednesday night. “He started getting to the rim,” McHale said. “I thought we were settling for a lot and playing East and West. We told them to get to the hole and put pressure on the basket and they did.” Gay has started all 21 games for the Kings since being traded from Toronto on Dec. 9. Aaron Gray received a flagrant foul soon after that when he grabbed Harden as he was heading to the basket. Harden made both free throws as part of an 8-2 run that put the Rockets up 29-22 at the end of the first. Omri Casspi added 20 points and tied a career-high with 12 rebounds and Parsons added 19 points with 10 rebounds. NOTES: Houstons Terrence Jones missed his second straight game with a deep thigh bruise and Ronnie Brewer sat out with a sore calf. … Sacramentos Quincy Acy and Harden both received technical fouls on the same play in the third quarter. … Thomas has made at least one 3-pointer in 35 straight games, tying the fourth-longest streak in franchise history. ’ ’ ’

LONDON — Roger Federer made light work of Richard Gasquet to clinch his first win at the ATP World Tour Finals, defeating the Frenchman 6-4, 6-3 on Thursday to boost his chances of making the semifinals for an 11th time. In a match pitting together two stylists, the sixth-seeded Swiss quickly took control and broke Gasquet four times in the match. The Frenchman hit only 11 winners and looked inhibited throughout. Federer, who has won a record six year-end championships, was not having a great day either — he had 30 unforced errors — but prevailed on important points as Gasquet converted only one of his six break chances. Federer needed five match points to earn his 43rd Finals win. “It is a big win for me and hopefully I can keep it up in the next match against Juan Martin del Potro,” said Federer, chasing only his second title of the year. “Im not coming back from a serious injury, but Im coming back from a lot of sort of ups and downs, resetting things, trying out things, making sure I get my confidence back, my movement and so forth.” Federer and Gasquet lost their opening round-robin matches in Group B, against defending champion Novak Djokovic and del Potro, respectively. Djokovic played del Potro late Thursday. Only once in his previous 11 Finals appearances has Federer failed to advance to the last four. A win against del Potro on Saturday will guarantee him a spot in the semis, while Gasquet became the second player to be eliminated, following David Ferrer. It was Federers 11th win in 13 matches against Gasquet, who started by winning his first service game at love before fading. The Finals are Federers last chance to win a big tournament this season. He has won only one title in the past 14 months and has only three victories against top-10 opponents in 2013, including one against del Potro in Paris last week. “Im glad I got one back in Paris because I knew we could be again in the same group, we could be playing each other,” Federer said. “I think that win for me in Paris psychologically was very important. I could beat top-10 guys, I beat Richard, I beat Juan Martin last week. I truly believe my confidence is higher, and thats what I need to beat the best, and Juan Martin is part of that group honestly.” nfl jerseys china . Ortega played 42 games for Double-A Tulsa in the Texas League last season before sustaining a hairline fracture on his shin. JUPITER, Fla. — Matt Carpenter called agreeing to a new US$52-million, six-year deal with St. Louis a no-brainer. The Cardinals are hoping their third baseman sticks even longer than that. “Hes the type of player youd like to think could finish his career as a Cardinal,” St. Louis chairman and CEO Bill DeWitt said Saturday. St. Louis began contract talks with Carpenter in August. Both sides characterized the negotiations smooth. “It was not one of those where we were sitting there debating all of Matts faults or his weaknesses, because there werent any,” St. Louis General Manager John Mozeliak said. “Hes really a special person not only on the field but off the field.” The deal includes a team option for a seventh year in 2020 at $18.5 million. Should the St. Louis decline the option, they would pay Carpenter a $2-million buyout. “For a baseball junkie like myself, I cant think of a better place to play than the city of St. Louis,” Carpenter said. "Busch Stadium, I still pinch myself every time I make that drive to the field. “Playing in front of these fans, the city of St. Louis, Cardinal baseball as a whole, its just so much fun. Its such a privilege to put on this jersey. Its something I dont take lightly at all.” Carpenters agent, Bryan Cahill, said the 28-year-old received a $1-million signing bonus and will make $1.55 million this season.dddddddddddd The salary escalates each year, reaching $14.5 million in 2019. Carpenter hit .318 while leading the National League in hits (199), doubles (55) and runs (126) last season and playing mostly second base. He is moving back to third this season, where he has played most of his professional career. He earned his first all-star selection in 2013 and finished fourth in MVP voting. A 13th-round draft choice out of TCU in 2009, Carpenters first full season in the majors was 2012. Carpenter switched to second during last spring training and started 128 games as a middle infielder in 2013. He also played 24 games at third. Known in the clubhouse for his work ethic and daily preparation, it hasnt taken Carpenter long to take on a leadership role. Hes made an impact not only on the younger Cardinals, but also on the veterans. “They cant help but watch,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "OK, how did this guy get on the board all of the sudden? “Hows he in the MVP running? Where did this come from? They cant help but translate the work thats put in and the discipline.” He fought back emotion at Saturdays press conference. “I realize what a responsibility this is for me,” Carpenter said. “Im really looking forward to living up to this and continuing being part of such a great organization.” ’ ’ ’

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Jaime Garcias 40th win in the majors will always be special. It took a lot of hard work and more than a year to get it. The left-hander took another step in his comeback from shoulder surgery by getting a win on Saturday night, and Yadier Molina homered again in the city where hes always booed, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The Cardinals evened their series at a game apiece. St. Louis has won nine of the last 10 series between the NL Central rivals. Garcia (1-0) made his second start since recovering from surgery on his labrum and rotator cuff last May. He gave up six hits and a pair of runs in 5 2-3 innings, fanning seven and retiring 12 batters in a row over one span. Although he would have liked to have stayed in the game longer, it was encouraging to get a long-awaited victory behind his name. “I didnt go as deep as I wanted to,” said Garcia, who threw 55 strikes out of 75 pitches. “But its a big win for me, for the team. Obviously Im excited to go out there and feel healthy.” His first five innings were very encouraging. “He had exactly what we were hoping to have, right from the top,” manager Mike Matheny said. “He just couldnt stay in the game longer.” Ryan Ludwick homered in the ninth off Jason Motte. Trevor Rosenthal came on with two outs and fanned Todd Frazier with two runners aboard for his 15th save in 17 chances. Molina hit a solo shot off left-hander Tony Cingrani (2-4), who has lost both of his starts since returning from the disabled list. Cingrani, who had shoulder tendinitis, has given up eight runs and 14 hits in 12 innings his last two times out. Molina also homered off Johnny Cueto for a 1-0 win on opening day in Cincinnati. Two of his five homers have come at Great American Ball Park, where he is booed by fans who remember his 2010 brawl at home plate with second baseman Brandon Phillips. “I tell them to keep booing — just to myself,” Matheny said. “It seems the louder they get, the better he gets.” Jon Jay, a late addition to the Cardinals lineup, had three hits and drove in a pair of runs. St. Louis was forced to change its bullpen and its lineup before the game. Left-handed reliever Kevin Siegrist went on the 15-day disabled list with strained pitching forearm. Left-hander Sam Freeman was called up from Triple-A to take his spot. Centre fielder Peter Bourjos was scratched from the lineup less than half an hour before the first pitch because of a stomach virus, prompting Matheny to change three spots in the batting order. Jay, who wasnt in the original lineup, took Bourjos place in centre. The sixth inning proved pivotal, with second baseman Mark Ellis playing a role in both halves. The Cardinals loaded the bases with a single and a pair of walks, and Ellis hit a sacrifice fly to the wall in centre. Jay singled home another run for a 4-1 lead. Phillips doubled home a run in the bottom of the inning, leaving runners on second and third. Ellis jumped and caught Devin Mesoracos liner, helping Garcia hold the lead and stay on course for his first victory since May 17 last year. “An unbelievable play,” Garcia said. “A game-changer right there.” The Cardinals dugout couldnt believe Ellis got the ball. “The way I saw it, it looked like he had no chance when the ball left the bat,” Matheny said. “Im still surprised. It looked like he jumped twice his height.” NOTES: Adam Wainwright (7-2) tries to become the NLs first eight-game winner in the series finale. Hes 6-9 with a 4.75 career ERA against Cincinnati. They brought home-court advantage with them. To guard Mike Conley, that ratchets up the pressure even more. Its time for the Grizzlies to protect the place they call the Grindhouse. “Its going to be tough against a team thats played so well, especially on the road,” Conley said Wednesday of the Thunder. “But were happy with our position, I can tell you that much.” The Grizzlies evened this first-round Western Conference series by winning 111-105 in overtime at Oklahoma City on Monday. Being the visitor Thursday night in a hostile arena for Game 3 isnt a concern for the Thunder, who went 25-16 away from Oklahoma City for the NBAs second-best road record in the regular season. “Everybodys going to be there. Theyre going to have T-shirts. Theyre going to be swinging towels,” Kevin Durant said. “Its the playoffs. Its going to be hostile, but weve been there before.” Yes, the Thunder certainly have. But they have exactly one win in five previous post-season games in Memphis, and they needed three overtimes to pull that out in the 2011 conference semifinals. Memphis took both matchups in last years semifinals en route to winning the series in five. Memphis went 5-2 at home in the 2013 playoffs, when San Antonio, in the conference finals, was the only visitor to win. Tony Allen, who has made Durant work so much harder for his points in this series, said the Grizzlies cant become complacent knowing theyll have a loud crowd at the FedExForum. “We got to understand its one game at a time,” Allen said. “Its the playoffs. Each game counts. Each possession counts. We cant get caught up in that.” Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger also has cautioned his team not to simply assume being home will make everything work. That 14-game winning streak that helped them reach the pllayoffs as the seventh seed also is meaningless.dddddddddddd Joerger said its time to start over now, and the team that sets the tone for its style quickest has won each of the first two games. Oklahoma City ran all over Memphis in winning the opener 100-86 in a game that was only that close because the Grizzlies had a big third quarter. The Grizzlies slowed the Thunder down from the opening tip Monday night in leading by as many as 10, even if they needed overtime after Durants amazing four-point play off his 3 falling out of bounds. “Our team is a team that cant play too far from behind because we play a certain style of basketball, and its tough,” Grizzlies forward Mike Miller said. “Our starts are big for us. They do have some pressure. They have some expectations.” The Thunder practiced Wednesday in Oklahoma City before travelling to Memphis. Coach Scott Brooks wants the Thunder to keep Conley and backup guard Beno Udrih in front of them. Udrih had 14 points in 14 minutes, giving Conley plenty of rest in his first extended action since being claimed off waivers in February. Brooks also wants to make sure Memphis big men work for what they get. Zach Randolph scored 25 points Monday, hitting 10 of his 20 shots. Offensively, Oklahoma City wants to screen better to keep Allen away from Durant as much as possible. “If we dont have good setups and good screens, its going to bog down and its going to be tough shots at the end of the shot clock,” Brooks said. Of course, thats exactly what the Grizzlies want to slow down the Thunder. “We just keep slogging along and we feel always that if we get you in a possession game, we feel like that over the course of 48 minutes that we can grind you down,” Joerger said. ___ AP Sports Writer Cliff Brunt contributed to this report from Oklahoma City, and AP freelance writer Clay Bailey contributed in Memphis. ___ Follow Teresa M. TORONTO — It was a CFL pink night at the Rogers Centre in honour of breast cancer awareness. But you could have coloured a bruising Argos-Bombers game black and blue Thursday. Toronto defensive back Neiko Thorpe was carted off the field early in the Argos 36-21 win after appearing to get his head caught in an awkward position trying to tackle Winnipeg running back Will Ford. Thorpe was taken to nearby St. Michaels Hospital for precautionary evaluation but released later Thursday night after the game. “All I know is that he was moving a little bit and he had a little tingling in his neck,” Argos coach Scott Milanovich said at his post-game news conference. Later word was that Thorpe had been released from hospital after all tests were negative. There was a lengthy delay with 2:16 remaining in the first quarter when Thorpe was hurt — his head appearing to slam off Fords leg — as the Bombers drove towards the Toronto goal-line. Players watched as trainers worked on Thorpe in the Toronto end zone. The import defensive back was strapped onto a board — his head immobilized — and placed on a stretcher before being carted off. Toronto (11-6) led 10-0 at the time. The Bombers scored several plays later to make it 10-7. “The Blue Bomber organization wishes the best for injured Argo Neiko Thorpe,” Winnipeg said on its official Twitter account. Thorpe was the second Argo defender to go down in the CFL game. Middle linebacker Robert McCune was hurt in a collision on an earlier pass play. McCune, who was being examined in the dressing room when Thorpe went down, returned to the game despite what he called “a little shoulder issue.” “They checked it out and I told them I was good enough to finish the game,” he said later. “Ive got two weeks now to try to get it back healthy and get ready for this Eastern final.” Asked if it hurt, McCune smiled wryly and said: “Its starting to stiffen up a little but now … Ill be OK.” Toronto receiver Spencer Watt also was sidelined after talking a big hit from defensive back Johnny Sears near the Winnipeg goal-line. Milanovich had no other injury updates. The Bombers (3-14) had their own problems. Quarterback Max Hall had to be helped off in the dying minutes as he tried to scramble for a first down near his goal-line. Linebacker Marcus Ball, who made the tackle, was also shaken up on the play. Hall was said to have suffered a hip injury but there was no other immediate update. Hall was replaced by Jason Boltus, who was saved from being erased by McCune when he fell over as the bruising Argos linebacker steamed towards him. Bombers coach Tim Burke recited a list of players who had taken knocks during the game. Defensive back Desia Dunn (reaggravating an ankle injury) and defensive lineman Michael McAdoo also did not finish the game. The walking wounded included receiver Wallace Miles and defensive back Jovon Johnson. . BRASILA, Brazil — Canadas womens soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Chile on Sunday in their second game of an international tournament in Brazil. Yanara Aedo scored the games only goal in the 40th minute, getting her head on a free kick to clinch the win. Chile won a few early corner kicks to test the resolve of a young Canadian back line that features two teenagers — Sura Yekka and Kadeisha Buchanan. Canada spent the majority of the second half on Chiles side of the field, and had a number of scoring chances, but couldnt find the goal it needed. After using up its four allotted substitutions, Canada had to play the final minutes a player short after Kaylyn Kyle had to be helped off the field with an injury. U.S. District Judge Gordon Quist in Grand Rapids ruled in favour of a Swiss insurance company. The insurer had asked the court to recognize a Swiss courts $1.1 million judgment, which increased to $1.6 million with interest and costs. Quist said in Thursdays ruling that his court was adhering to the Uniform Foreign-Country Judgments Recognition Act. Millers hit on Canadian national Andrew McKim caused McKim to fall forward and strike his head on the ice. He was hospitalized for weeks with a concussion and other injuries. Miller previously refused to pay the Swiss courts judgment, saying he didnt think the ruling was valid. His attorney, Douglas Donnell, didnt respond to a phone message seeking comment left Saturday at his office by The Associated Press. According to The Grand Rapids Press, Miller was charged in Switzerlands Canton of Zurich in 2004 and eventtually convicted of simple bodily harm, intentional bodily harm and gross negligence.dddddddddddd The court found him completely responsible for McKims injuries. A similar case is playing out in Canada, where a lawsuit is pending against Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi for a career-ending hit he laid on Colorado Avalanche centre Steve Moore in 2004, when Bertuzzi played for the Vancouver Canucks. Moore is suing Bertuzzi and the Canucks for $38 million over the hit, which left Moore with a concussion and three fractured vertebrae. The case is scheduled to go to trial in Toronto on Sept. 8. Bertuzzi was suspended for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs, which cost him about $502,000, and he didnt play during the 2004-05 lockout season. But he was reinstated for the 2005-06 campaign and has since continued his career, most recently with Detroit. Like Miller, Bertuzzi also faced criminal charges over the on-ice incident. He pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm and was sentenced in 2006 to a year of probation and 80 hours of community service. ’ ’ ’

LOS ANGELES – The Raptors will be at the edge of the NBA spotlight Sunday evening, whether they like it or not. Basketball fans around the globe will be watching as Kobe Bryant makes his season debut – 240 days after tearing his left Achilles – against Toronto, a team he has used as his own personal punching bag. Bryant announced his return in a video posted on his Facebook page Friday afternoon and the game, which airs at 9:30pm et on TSN2, will also be picked up by NBA TV in the US. All eyes will be locked on the Lakers future Hall-of-Famer, all except the Raptors coach, who would rather avoid becoming a sideshow in the Bryant circus that is sure to consume Staples Center on Sunday. “Everybodys going to be watching Kobe come back but Im totally concerned about the Toronto Raptors,” said Dwane Casey, hoping to put an end to his teams five-game skid. “No disrespect to Kobe, hes one of our greats in the game, we need him in the game, but for us Im worried about the Toronto Raptors, our physical disposition, our approach, our toughness.” Whether he cares to admit it, the Lakers did Casey and Torontos coaching staff a favour by making their announcement public Friday rather than keeping Bryants status under wraps until game day. As the home team – with an assist from the NBA – shamelessly builds the hype for Bryants return, the visitors are trying desperately to dodge it. “Weve got to go out there and play hard regardless, [even] if we werent on TV, if we were just playing in front of five people,” said California-native DeMar DeRozan after practicing at the Clippers training center in LA Saturday afternoon. A match-up with the struggling Raptors is a fitting return for Bryant, who has torched Toronto throughout his 17-year career. Bryant is averaging 28.3 points in 29 games against the Raptors, his second highest average against any opponent, inflated by his infamous 81-point performance. Bryant has only lost to Toronto at Staples once, back in 2001, and the Raptors havent defeated the Lakers in LA since. Now the question is: How will the 35-year-old fare coming off major surgery, after an eight-month layoff? “Me, knowing him, he wouldnt come back if he didnt think he could play at a dominant level,” DeRozan insisted. “I think its mixed emotion for everybody. Everybodys just eager to see how hell be. Everybody always tries to doubt him in some way and he always seems to prove people wrong. So its just another test for him, well see how he bounces back.” Bryant should see limited playing time in his first game back, roughly 20-30 minutes of action per Lakers coach Mike DAntoni. Although working one of the all-time greats back into your lineup isnt a bad problem to have, DAntoni hopes it wont disrupt the chemistry thats been built over the teams first 19 games. “Theyve been moving the basketball well, [doing] a lot of things [DAntoni was] doing in New York with the same sets, same things he was doing in Phoenix,” Casey said of the 10-9 Lakers. “A lot of pick-and-rolls, the ball was humming, moving and I assume theyre going to do the same thing with [Bryant] coming back. We just have to be prepared.” With Bryant hurt, Steve Nash out of the lineup – hes already been ruled out for Sundays game – and Dwight Howard in Houston, these Lakers have looked more like a vintage DAntoni team than last seasons incarnation ever did. This team has played at the NBAs third quickest pace, making more three-point shots per game than any other in the league. Now how do they integrate Bryant? The Raptors – in full out “we need to worry about ourselves”-mode Saturday – are navigating through an identity crisis of their own. Opponents have shot over 45 per cent in each game during their losing streak and have exceeded 100 points in four of the five contests. Their latest defeat, a 106-97 loss in Phoenix Friday, exposed a lack of toughness on both ends of the floor. “Weve gotten away from that for whatever reason,” Casey said after his team was out-rebounded 53-36 by the Suns, including an 18-11 disparity on the offensive glass. “Were not the hit first team that we were.” To make matters worse, Toronto may be without its most physical player on Sunday after Tyler Hansbrough sprained his left shoulder against the Suns. The Raptors forward underwent an MRI in LA Saturday morning and the team is awaiting the results before determining his status. Playing on the big stage, with the focus surrounding the other team and its best player, the Raptors have an opportunity to spoil the party and prove themselves in front of a large audience. “Weve got to get out of this slump,” DeRozan said. “We understand it doesnt feel good, its a bad feeling and weve got to turn it around.” nfl jerseys china .Com Tour. United when it travels to Columbus for a Major League Soccer clash with the Crew on Saturday.MONTREAL – The question was posed to Jonathan Bernier, perhaps the busiest netminder in the National Hockey League this season and a man who has witnessed the strength of terrific defensive hockey in Los Angeles firsthand en route to a Cup in 2012: Can his Toronto Maple Leafs, currently the top wild card in the East, threaten a deep playoff run without raising their substandard level of defensive play? “Goalies got to be good,” Bernier said with an almost uncomfortable laugh. “I personally dont think so,” he continued frankly. “Because some games [the goalie] wont get those bounces and [the puck is] going to go in somehow. But we know weve got it in this room. Weve just got to pay the price to play better defensively and, if we do, Im pretty sure we can be one of the top teams in this league.” Its an uncomfortable truth for a team that wrung up 11 wins in 14 games before the Olympic break and has designs on making noise in the playoffs after a long-awaited return last spring. This is a hockey club that struggles badly to defend and relies most nights on terrific goaltending and an incredibly potent offence to win. Its a formula that might yield success in the regular season, and it has for the Leafs thus far, but is unlikely to gain much steam when the hockey tightens in mid-April. Head coach Randy Carlyle has been beating the drum loudly on the topic all season, but doesnt have much to show for it. His group remains a work in progress. “Weve been trying and stressing that defensive hockey is whats going to give your team the best chance to qualify for the playoffs,” said Carlyle after an instructive practice in Brossard, Quebec. “[But] were in the qualification mode. Were not in the playoff mode [yet].” Only five teams have been worse than the Leafs defensively this season and only one of those teams, the Ottawa Senators, has any hope of qualifying for the playoffs. Toronto has allowed a bloated three goals per game despite boasting some of the finest goaltending in the league with the 25-year-old Bernier. No team, in fact, puts more pressure on their goaltender to be great than do the Leafs. Only Mike Smith in Phoenix has faced more shots than Bernier thus far and hes started 10 more games than the native of Laval. “I think weve seen it,” said Bernier of sturdy defensive play. “I think everyones seen it, but I dont think weve seen it consistently enough.” Hurting the effort is a bad penalty kill, one thats allowed the most goals (tied) in the league this season, an unstable defence which includes young and growing parts like Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner and a high-end forward group that has shown only spotty attention to defence. A pile of goals and timely goaltending have been required most nights to win. That was true during an 11-2-1 run before the 18-day Olympic stoppage. Running, then, behind the all-world efforts of Phil Kessel, who has been the hottest player on the planet in 2014, the club scored 51 goals – 3.64 per game – but also allowed 41 on the other end. Theyve won despite being outshot in 36 of 48 games – they have a record of 21-10-5 in those games – and despite the ffact that theyve allowed a league-high of more than 36 shots per game.dddddddddddd Cody Franson, second on the back-end in minutes, believes the instability is tied to confusion in the defensive end, too much thinking rather quick instinctual reaction. “I think were still a little indecisive on things sometimes,” he said. “We try and play a quite aggressive style of defence and sometimes when you think too much you end up being a half second slow compared to where you should be. That comfort level just isnt quite there with us yet. I think we still think about things too much.” They allowed five in their most recent affair against the Islanders on Thursday night, an overtime loss to a struggling club that was without its best player and leading scorer, John Tavares, and their third leading point-getter in Frans Nielsen. Two of the goals came by way of short circuiting on the power-play with Michael Grabner scoring twice shorthanded in a span of 48 seconds on the same power-play. Another found the back of the net via the aforementioned penalty kill with two more coming on defensive breakdowns, including the overtime winner. “Gifts,” said Carlyle after the 5-4 defeat. “Ive got no other word to describe the goals that we gave up.” A drastic reversal at this late stage in the year seems unlikely, though Carlyle and the coaching staff continue to push and prod. They did so with any available ice during the Olympic break and continued at practice Friday, narrowing their sights on a tighter neutral zone and improved forecheck – efforts aimed at spending less time in the defensive zone. But with just 21 games to play, including a division clash with the Canadiens on Saturday, its probably safe to say that this is what these Maple Leafs are. The question now is whether they can, as currently constructed, make a little noise in the postseason (assuming they get in) or whether their defensive liabilities will prove too onerous to overcome. Last spring, they nearly toppled a Bruins giant, but required some lightning in a bottle and forgotten brilliance from James Reimer in Games 5 and 6. History points emphatically in the direction of those that can defend. In fact, the last three Stanley Cup winners finished the regular season as either the best or second-best team defensively. And though the Leafs are not yet in the Cup conversation, that remains the goal somewhere down the road. Dave Nonis and the Toronto management team have to be mindful of that fact as it relates to the larger construction of the roster, both now with the Mar. 5 trade deadline looming and over the longer term with the core thats being put into place. Are these the foundations of a club that can eventually win the ultimate prize? “You always see it every year, strong defensive teams win,” said Jay McClement. "I think we have the make-up for it. But not without being strong defensively. Obviously, youre not going to win a lot of games 5-4 in the playoffs. We have the goaltending for it and have had it all year. Weve just got to cut down on these mistakes and well be fine. “Were not changing the way we do it, weve just got to do it better.” ’ ’ ’

OYONNAX, France - French rider Tony Gallopin led a late breakaway in a show of opportunism and savvy racing to win Wednesdays 11th stage of the Tour de France as Italys Vincenzo Nibali retained the overall lead. The peloton returned to action after the races first rest day with the 187.5-kilometre (116.3-mile) ride from Besancon to Oyonnax, not far from the Swiss border. The stage featured four small to medium-sized hills near the end. In the stages mini-drama, American Andrew Talansky, struggling through pain from crashes earlier in the race, dropped out of the pack and rode solo much of the day. In a show of grit, he finished some 32 minutes back - enough to qualify to ride another day under race rules. Gallopin, who wore the yellow jersey for a day before Nibali recaptured it, first tried to break away with about 13 1/2 kilometres (8.4 miles) left but got reeled in. Then, in a late flurry, with less than 3 kilometres to go, the Lotto-Belisol rider tried again. This time, it worked. He chiseled out a lead of several seconds and, desperately pedaling, held off a surging pack in the final several hundred meters. Gallopin won by several bike lengths, just enough for him to have time to lift his arms in celebration, panting. “Incredible,” said Gallopin of his first Tour stage win. "I came to train for the Tour de France here … that really served me today. “Its really a victory that feels good.” The top standings didnt change, because Nibali finished in the pack with the same time as Gallopin. Astana team leader Nibali has a lead of 2 minutes, 23 seconds over Australias Richie Porte, in second. Alejandro Valverde of Spain was third, another 24 seconds back. Gallopin was in fifth, 3:12 behind Nibali. With such a margin and the strong form he has shown so far, Nibali is looking well-positioned for possible victory when the race ends in Paris on July 27. But tough days lie ahead: in the Alps later this week, and the Pyrenees mountains in Week Three. Talansky, in pain after two crashes twice in recent days, dropped back from the peloton more than halfway through the stage. At one point, he stopped and sat down on a roadside guard rail. French TV first counted him out, as did some observers on Twitter. But in a show of heart, and with encouragement from his team sports director Robert Hunter, Talansky got back on his bike, wiped his eyes and continued. Now he was racing against the clock. Under race rules, which require riders to finish within a certain time of the stage winner, he had to finish within 37 minutes of Gallopin. Talansky did that with about five minutes to spare, said Jean-Francois Pescheux, a top race official. The Garmin-Sharp team leader, who won the Criterium du Dauphine stage race last month, was seen as a potential podium contender before this Tour. But Talansky fell largely out of contention for that prospect in Stage 10, when he had the second of two crashes in this race. As Wednesdays stage began, he was nearly 15 minutes back of Nibali in 26th place. Riders head off on another day featuring four small to mid-sized climbs on Thursday, with a 185.5-kilometre (115-mile) 12th stage from Bourg-en-Bresse to Saint-Etienne. You can catch all of the action live tonight at 8:30pm et/5:30pm pt on TSN with the pre-game show before the 9:10pm et/6:10pm pt tip-off. Here are 3 Keys for each team. Enjoy! UCONN KEYS: 1. DOMINATE THE GUARD PLAY: Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright have been terrific so far in the tournament. Their ability to take you out of your comfort level with their tenacious defense and their ability to create and make their own shots is big. They are more experienced and, in my opinion, as talented, if not more talented, than the Harrison twins – they must dominate this match-up and frustrate the young guards. 2. REBOUNDING: Kentucky is +9 per game in the Tournament on the boards. That is a huge disparity and a big part of Kentuckys game is the second or third shot per offensive trip. UConn must neutralize this or theyll be in trouble. This is not one of UConns strengths. but theyve got to find a way to win the 50/50 battles and be physical. With the Wildcats, UConn is giving up lots of size inside. 3. DeANDRE DANIELS: After averaging 20 points and nine boards in his last three games, Daniels has to continue to be that versatilebig man for the Huskies inside and use his shot-making ability while facing the basket. Hes a tough cover and his ability to make the three-ball and lure you away from the hoop can take the Kentucky big out of their comfort zone a bit. They did a wonderful jjob stopping Wisconsins big man, Frank Kaminsky, with lots of attention.dddddddddddd Daniels has to pick his spots, yet has to assert his game early and establish the fact that hes a guy getting lots of touches and attract the double team to open things up for teammates. KENTUCKY KEYS: 1. LATE SHOT CLOCK & GAME CLOCK SITUATIONS: The Wildcats have really impressed me with their discipline and poise in the tight situations. Decision-making with the ball and the types of plays and shots theyve been getting have been much improved over the early part of the season. Theyve been excellent at being organized and fundamentally sound on defence with a great attention to detail as the game progresses. They must continue to be sound on both sides of the ball. 2. TURNOVER MARGIN: Take care of the rock. Thats what it comes down to. Kentucky has been really steady in this regard and helped prevent run outs against their defence. They are a very good half-court defensive team that has the quickness, athleticism, size and length to frustrate opponents. You get folks into that type of game and then grind them. UConns guards want to run and create chances in open space. The fewer turnovers, the more the style of play favours you. 3. MARCUS LEE / JULIUS RANDLE / JAMES YOUNG: Energy, offensive rebounds, blocks, deflections, post scoring effort plays and paint domination are major areas that these, among many of the Kentucky young front court players, can get the upper hand over the Huskies. Beat them to the punch and be the better front court. ’ ’ ’

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Wild traded for goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov on Tuesday in conjunction with their decision to shut down ailing veteran Niklas Backstrom. The Wild sent a fourth-round draft pick to Edmonton to complete the deal one day before the NHL trade deadline. General manager Chuck Fletcher said the team must assume that neither Backstrom nor Josh Harding will be healthy enough to mind the net again this season. Rookie Darcy Kuemper has been stellar in their absence, but with a finishing stretch of 20 games in 37 days starting Saturday, hes not enough. “We have a lot of work ahead of us to get where we want to get to, but clearly having two quality goaltenders was very important,” Fletcher said. Kuemper has started 15 straight games, so Bryzgalov is more for insurance, though hes certain to have his time, too. The Wild are 14-4-2 in 2014 and in firm control of the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference playoff race. “I will do my job as best I can. Making the decisions on who is supposed to play is not my job,” Bryzgalov said on a conference call. He added: “I look at this as a great opportunity for me to play, and yeah its like a new challenge.” Backstrom has been bothered by injuries all season, most notably to his midsection that will probably prompt surgery, and the 36-year-old has a career-worst 3.02 goals-against average over 21 games. Fletcher told him Monday of their preference to hold him out until training camp. “His pain threshold is tremendous,” Fletcher said. “Hes a competitive guy and I know hes really disappointed because the team has taken a really strong step the last couple months. Hes been through some of the lean times, and I know he wants to be a part of it but our goal for Nik is to get him healthy.” Harding was superb early in the season, but the 2013 Masterton Trophy winner — for sportsmanship, dedication and perseverance — has not played at all in 2014 due to illness related to medication for multiple sclerosis. With not much more than a month left in the regular season and Harding not yet ready to resume skating, Fletcher said hes probably finished until the fall, too. The search for a replacement intensified in the last couple of days. Martin Brodeur and Jaroslav Halak also were potentially available via trade, but their price was far higher than what it took to nab Bryzgalov. The 33-year-old Russian has a 5-8-5 record in 20 games for the Oilers this season, with an ugly 3.01 goals-against average. Hes on an expiring contract, a requirement for the Wild. This is a rental, plain and simple. Thats largely because Kuemper has tied a Wild rookie record with 11 wins and since Jan. 7 has a 1.70 GAA with two shutouts and a .939 save percentage. “Weve always felt hed be a very good No. 1 goalie down the road, and we just didnt realize down the road would mean this January and February,” Fletcher said. The pick sent to Edmonton was originally acquired last year from Buffalo in the trade that brought first-line right wing Jason Pominville to Minnesota. Bryzgalov has 38 games of playoff experience over five postseasons with Anaheim, Phoenix and Philadelphia, including three stellar starts against the Wild in the Western Conference quarterfinals in 2007. He stopped 73 of 77 shots in the first three games of that series, all Ducks victories. Bryzgalov struggled in defeat in the next game, Jean-Sebastien Giguere replaced him thereafter and the Ducks went on to win the Stanley Cup. Bryzgalovs career record is 213-157-50, including a 42-20-6 mark for the Coyotes during the 2009-10 season, his best in the NHL. He had a 2.29 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage. Then came his ill-fated time in Philadelphia. The Flyers signed him to a $51 million, nine-year contract in 2011 and used a salary-cap compliance buyout to release him last June, just two seasons into the megadeal. General manager Paul Holmgren said then the contract was “a costly mistake.” Bryzgalov didnt sign with the Oilers until last November. After signing goalie Ben Scrivens to a two-year contract extension last week, the Oilers took their first step away from Bryzgalov. Then they acquired goalie Viktor Fasth from Anaheim on Tuesday for a fifth-round draft pick this summer and a third-round selection in 2015. SUNRISE, Fla. — The Carolina Hurricanes took advantage of solid goaltending on their end and an unexpected change in the other net. Jiri Tlusty scored twice and Anton Khudobin stopped 35 shots to lead the Hurricanes to a 3-0 victory over the Florida Panthers on Thursday night. Khudobin recorded his first shutout this season with the Hurricanes, and the third of his career. His last shutout was March 31, 2013, at Buffalo as a member of the Boston Bruins. Jeff Skinner also scored for the Hurricanes. “Its always good when you (dont) get scored on in a game. But the most important is we just got the W,” Khudobin said. Dan Ellis, who played last season for Carolina, started the second period in relief of Roberto Luongo and made 18 saves. Luongo left the game after the first period with an upper body injury sustained in a collision with Carolinas Radek Dvorak. The Panthers described it as a precautionary measure. Luongo stopped 11 of 12 shots. Dvorak was assessed a game misconduct at 12:48 of the first when he crashed into Luongo and sent him into the net, knocking it off its moorings. Floridas Erik Gudbranson was assessed a roughing penalty for engaging Dvorak in retaliation. “I?made the shot and then I was driving like 100 miles per hour to the net and then I got a little push,” Dvorak said. “Next thing I?knew I was in the net with Louie, but it was not intentional at all. Thats not my style.” Dvorak, who has a home in the area, had over 20 family members and friends attending the game, only to see him exit early. “Obviously, you want to finish the game because you want to play in front of your family, in front of your friends, but sometimes you have a little bit of bad luck,” Dvorak said. “But the thing is we got two points after the game, which is more important for us.” Khudobin was pleased with his own play but concerned about Luongo. “I?hope hes OK and hes not going to have anything, but at the same time its just hockey,” Khudobin said. “Sometimes it happens, but I?dont feel good about it.” It didnt take long for the Hurricanes to take advantage of the goalie change as they scored two goals in five minutes. Tlusty scored his second goal after he grabbed a loose puck to the left of the net. Ellis fell down in the crease and wasnt able to reach across to block the shot from the left side. Tlusty found the net at 2:30 of the second for his third two-goal game of the season and a 2-0 lead. The Hurricanes stretched their advantage to 3-0 on Skinners goal. He took a pass from behind the net and his shot from the right side beat Ellis on the stick side at 5:46 of the second. “Its never a fun situation because you know your partner . something might not be good with him,” Ellis said. “Thats the job and you have to be ready when they call you. I wish I could have made two more saves.” The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead on Tlustys first goal 9:09 into the first period. Eric Staal grabbed a loose puck along the left boards and brought it toward the net. He passed to Tlusty low in the right circle. Tlusty was able to work the puck and get Luongo out of position and score on a wrist shot. “Tonight we scored the first goal, which is always better than being one down. Everyone came ready,” Tlusty said. NOTES: Gudbranson returned to the lineup after missing the past nine games with a knee injury. … The Hurricanes won all three games against the Panthers this season. … Khudobin has started five of the past six games for the Hurricanes. The Spurs announced on Monday that they have re-signed Matt Bonner.INDIANAPOLIS — This time, Jordan Morgan got the ball to bounce the right way — and Michigan celebrated. A little more than one year after missing a last-second tip-in that would have given the Wolverines a share of the Big Ten regular-season title, the 6-foot-8 forward scored on a layup with 7.9 seconds left to give No. 8 Michigan a 64-63 victory over Illinois in Fridays Big Ten tournament quarterfinals and a shot at another league championship. “Im telling you — I probably exaggerate — 10,000 times, at least 2,000 times in five years Jordan Morgan has run that same drill,” coach John Beilein said. "Theres a bag to hit him, you still got to catch it in a crowd and keep it up and dunk it if he can. He said he wanted to add a little drama to the game, so he decided to put it up on the rim. Illinois had a chance to win it when Tracy Abrams drove in for a layup, expecting contact, but the ball hit the front of the rim and bounced off. No foul was called. Its about time something went right for the Wolverines (24-7) in this tournament. Since going 3-0 to win the first title in 1998, Michigan has not won more than one game in the annual tourney. The Wolverines later vacated that tourney title because of NCAA infractions, and Michigan has endured everything from an embarrassing 21-turnover game in a 2006 first-round loss to Evan Turners buzzer-beating 40-foot heave, which gave rival Ohio State a 69-68 quarterfinal win in 2010. Things are supposed to be different this year. After ending a 28-year drought between outright regular-season titles with a win at Illinois last week, Michigan came into this weekend with the No. 1 tourney seed for the first time in school history and with a full head of steam — six straight wins. But it almost happened again. Michigan blew a 13-point second-half lead, scored just six points in the final 7 1/2 minutes and then wound up getting bailed out by Morgan when Big Ten player of the year changed the play coach John Beilein called in the huddle. “I was looking to be aggressive and raised up to shoot and man, the guy guarding me was still chasing me and the big was chasing me too and J-Mo rolled down the lane and he was wide open,” Stauskas said. “I hit him with the ball and he laid it in.” The Wolverines usual trio led tthe way.dddddddddddd Stauskas had 19 points despite going 4 of 12 from the field and 2 of 10 on 3-pointers against Illinois zone defence, Glenn Robinson III had 15 points and seven rebounds and Caris LeVert finished with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Yet it was Morgan, who wound up the star. He made the only two shots he took — none bigger than the layup he never expected that sent Michigan into Saturdays semifinals against either fourth-seeded Nebraska or fifth-seeded Ohio State, who played in the second quarterfinal of the day. Michigan swept Nebraska this season and won at Ohio State in this seasons only meeting with the Buckeyes. Morgan, who missed the shot that gave Indiana last years outright regular season title, made this one. “As far as catching it, I just put it on the rim and got a nice roll,” he said matter-of-factly. Ninth-seeded Illinois (19-14) was on the cusp of pulling off a major upset after finally retaking a 59-58 lead on Rices driving layup with 4:53 left. The Illini allowed just one 3-pointer, one free throw but couldnt stop Morgans layup the rest of the way. Abrams and Rayvonte Rice each finished with 11 points. Kendrick Nunn had 10 points as the Illini lost for only the second time in seven games. “Its obviously an uncontested shot that I probably could make,” Abrams said. “We obviously wanted to get that one in and we wanted to win, but there was a lot of other plays that we can account back to that we could have did different or could have got an extra rebound.” Illinois zone defence changed game. Following a media timeout with 11:26 left, Stauskas made two free throws to give the Wolverines a 55-44 lead. The Illini answered with 10 straight points and finally took the lead on Rices driving layup with 4:53 left. Michigan tied the score at 61 with 3:10 to go, but all the Wolverines could muster the rest of the way was one free throw from Stauskas until the surprised Morgan got the right roll. “Well, were thrilled to get that win because as you can see, as Illinois has shown in their last six games, how well the program has played after a tough January,” Beilein said. “They proved how good they were, and, fortunately, we got some good bounces around the basket to finish the game.” ’ ’ ’

SHENZHEN, China – Defending champion Li Na and Peng Shuai advanced Friday to set up an all-Chinese final at the Shenzhen Open. Top-seeded Li defeated Germanys Annika Beck 6-1, 6-3, while fifth-seeded Peng advanced in a walkover when American Vania King withdrew with a right thigh injury. “Itll be a tough match tomorrow,” Li said. “Were quite familiar with each other and have improved a lot over the last year. But no matter what, Im quite looking forward to the final.” Li was leading 6-1, 5-0 Friday when Beck came back to reel off three straight games, but the former French Open champion regrouped to close out the match. King said she began feeling pain in her leg during her win over second-seeded Sara Errani in the second round and pulled out to rest before the Australian Open, which begins on Jan. 13. “It was a really difficult decision for me to pull out because I hate losing and not competing,” King said. “But I just have to look out for my health.” Saturdays final will be just the second in WTA history featuring two Chinese players. Li lost the first when she retired against Zheng Jie at Oeiras in 2006. Li has a 5-1 record against Peng, including a 4-0 mark at tournaments in China. Kevin Bieksa scored his second of the night at 2:15 of overtime as the Canucks fought back after blowing two separate two-goal leads to defeat the Coyotes 5-4. The defenceman collected his own rebound and chipped his fourth of the season over Phoenix goalie Mike Smith while falling to the ice, capping a game where Coyotes forward Antoine Vermette was credited with a hat trick — even though he only shot one puck into Vancouvers net himself. “It was a strange game on both sides. It was bizarre,” said Canucks assistant coach Mike Sullivan. “I think there might have been one goal that was actually shot in the net. It seemed like everything was a deflection off a skate, off a stick, off something, so it was just one of those games for both sides.” Chris Higgins had a goal and two assists for Vancouver (27-17-9), while Zac Dalpe added a goal and an assist. Jannik Hansen also scored for the Canucks, his first in 11 games. Vancouver, which came in having scored just eight times in its last seven games, holds down the first wild card position in the Western Conference and is just a point back of the Los Angeles Kings for third place in the Pacific Division. “It wasnt your typical game. Weve been struggling to score goals lately, so lets take some positive out of it. We put five in, some guys got on the scoresheet and we found a way to win when it came down to it,” said Bieksa, who also had an assist. “We needed the two points. We were up a couple goals a few times and they came back and we stayed resilient and found a way to win.” Added Higgins: “Kind of a sloppy game and with the weird goals it was kind of a strange game. Its nice to be on the winning side of those games and nice to score a bunch of goals — its been tough to come by recently.” Roberto Luongo, who was shaky at times and even directed one of Vermettes goals over the line himself, made 29 saves for the Canucks. On the whole, it was a night to forget for both Luongo and Smith as two of the three goalies heading to next months Winter Olympics for Canada fought the puck and looked lost in the crease at times. “It was definitely a weird one,” said Luongo. “It was one of those games where it felt like the puck was bouncing in from everywhere. The good thing is we got the win.” Shane Doan chipped in with a goal and an assist for Phoenix (24-18-10), which got 20 stops from Smith as the Coyotes picked up a point but still sit four back of the Minnesota Wild for eighth in the West and five back of Vancouver. “Were going to have to be better than we are right now,” said Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett. “We play stretches well but make critical errors at the wrong time and those have to be cleaned up if we are going to be a playoff team.dddddddddddd” After a wild finish to the second period, Doan tied the game 4-4 on a breakaway at 5:24 of the third. The Coyotes captain moved in on Luongo and lost control of his deke but still saw the puck squeak through the five-hole for his 15th of the season. Vancouver was handed a power play right at the end of regulation, but the leagues 28th-ranked unit failed to convert in overtime before Bieksa won it. The Canucks power play came into Sunday on a dreadful 2-for-30 run over the last eight games and rarely looked dangerous against the Coyotes in four failed attempts. “When a power play struggles it can take on a life of its own,” said Sullivan, who is running the Canucks bench in place of the suspended John Tortorella. “Now not only are you trying to coach the Xs and Os of the strategy of the power play, but you are coaching the mindset and a fragile mindset.” Down 2-1 in the second, the Coyotes tied it while shorthanded against that feeble power play. Canucks forward Ryan Kesler tried to slap the puck off Vermettes stick in front of Luongo, only to see it carom into the Vancouver net to tie the score at 9:07. The goal was Vermettes second of the night and 17th of the season. The Canucks had just 10 shots in total when Higgins restored Vancouvers lead at even strength by deflecting a shot from the point past Smith for his 14th of the season, and second in as many games, at 16:59. Dalpe then followed up his own rebound off the rush to score his third and stretch the Canucks lead to 4-2 just 42 seconds later. That two-goal lead would be short-lived as Vermette completed his second hat trick of the season — and third of his career — with 54.5 seconds remaining in the period with a shot from in close as the Coyotes broke through against the Canucks stingy penalty kill, which came in ranked second overall. Vermette now has six goals in his last six games, and three short-handed goals in his last four. “Free hat trick right there,” Luongo said with a laugh. “At least he buried the last one to make it at least somewhat justifiable. It was just one of those nights where it felt like the puck was finding ways in.” Vermette was unapologetic when it came to his good fortune. “You get good chances and the puck doesnt go in for you,” he said. “I thought it was a good sign, weve been talking about those bounces lately. Its a sign that things are going to turn around.” The Canucks — who were still without injured forwards Henrik Sedin and Mike Santorelli because of upper-body injuries — beat Smith twice in a 44-second span midway through first period as both Bieksa and Hansen ended lengthy droughts. Bieksa opened the scoring at 10:31 on a shot through traffic to pick up his first goal in nine games. The defencemans third of the season was also his first point in the last eight contests and came moments after a failed Vancouver power play. ’ ’ ’

PHOENIX – Revenge was a fleeting thing for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Milwaukee Brewers got their payback the very next pitch. Jonathan Lucroy homered twice, including a grand slam in an eventful seventh inning, and the Brewers made it two in a row over Arizona by beating the Diamondbacks 7-5 on Tuesday night. Lucroys slam to centre came on Brad Zieglers first delivery after Arizona reliever Evan Marshall was ejected for hitting Ryan Braun with a pitch. “They won the tough-guy points, but I dont know what the stats are for those,” Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse said. “We won the game because of that.” Brewers manager Ron Roenicke called Lucroys at-bat “probably the best Ive ever seen.” “After they smoke our guy, they bring in their closer, the first pitch he sees he hits a grand slam. Theres no way an at-bat can get bigger than that,” he said. It was the first grand slam and only the 16th home run allowed by Ziegler, who is not usually the Arizona closer. The Brewers couldnt understand why the Diamondbacks picked that moment to hit Braun. “We know the way the game works,” Braun said. “I was surprised I got hit in that situation, those circumstances — go-ahead run at second base, tying run at third.” Lucroy insisted the Diamondbacks drilling Braun did not provide added motivation. “Im not about revenge or payback,” the catcher said. “Im just about winning the game. It worked out for us.” Marshall (2-2) took the loss, facing three batters without getting an out after relieving starter Mike Bolsinger, who was called up from Triple-A Reno earlier in the day. Lucroy had a solo homer in the sixth. Aramis Ramirez also hit a solo shot for the Brewers. Lohse (8-2), who had hit three batters all season, plunked two in his six innings. He grazed Didi Gregorius to start the game, then hit Chris Owings just below the back of his head to start the sixth. Lohse also threw one over Bolsingers head, and the Brewers hit a batter in Monday nights win as well. All that apparently led to Marshall retaliating. “I am not going to comment on that,” Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. “You have been around the game long enough.” With a slight smile on his face, Marshall said he didnt hit Braun on purpose. Lohse allowed four runs, three earned, and six hits. The Brewers trailed 4-2 when he was lifted for a pinch-hitter in a five-run seventh. Arizonas Roger Kieschnick hit his first career homer, off Francisco Rodriguez to start the ninth. The ball landed in the swimming pool beyond the right-field fence. Singles by pinch-hitter Cody Ross and Gerardo Parra put runners at first and second with one out, but Rodriguez struck out Paul Goldschmidt. Miguel Montero bounced out to first to end it, and Rodriguez earned his major league-leading 22nd save. With the Brewers trailing 4-2, Jean Segura led off the seventh with his second triple of the night, off the wall in centre, and scored on Elian Herreras sacrifice fly. That ended the night for Bolsinger, who had a 4-2 lead when he left. He wound up allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks in 6 1-3 innings. Marshall came in and gave up a pinch-hit single to Lyle Overbay, then a double by Scooter Gennett to put runners on second and third. That brought up Braun. Marshalls first pitch went behind the batter, leading plate umpire Ted Barrett to walk to the mound for a nose-to-nose conversation with the Arizona pitcher. The very next pitch, Marshall plunked Braun just above the left hip to load the bases. “Thats ridiculous,” Lucroy said. “Its overreacting.” Barrett immediately tossed Marshall, who got high-fives from his teammates in the Diamondbacks dugout. But with the bases loaded, Lucroy homered to left-centre, above the 413-foot sign, and Milwaukee led 7-4. Gibson has been outspoken since Brauns 65-game suspension last year for violating baseballs drug agreement during the 2011 season, which included the sluggers big series when the Brewers edged the Diamondbacks in the NL playoffs. Asked if he thought that figured in Marshalls pitch, Braun said: “Youd have to ask him (Gibson). I wish him the best, hope he finds peace and happiness in his life.” NOTES: It was the second ejection for the Diamondbacks in two nights. Gibson was tossed in the ninth inning Monday. … A victory would have lifted Arizona out of last place in the NL West. … To make room for Bolsinger, the Diamondbacks optioned reliever Will Harris to Triple-A Reno. … Brewers CF Carlos Gomez sat out his second consecutive game with a sore hamstring. … In the third game of the four-game series Wednesday night, the Brewers send Matt Garza (4-4, 4.17 ERA) to the mound against Wade Miley (3-6, 4.71). DALLAS — Rich Peverley will not play again this season after collapsing on the bench during a game. Whether the Dallas Stars forward resumes his career wont be known until after more extensive work evaluating his irregular heartbeat. Peverley appeared briefly at a news conference Wednesday, reading nervously from a statement that thanked “the number of people that saved my life” after he went down in the first period of a game against Columbus, stunning players, coaches and fans. The 31-year-old left the questions to doctors who said his season was over and he would undergo a procedure that he decided to put off when his condition was first discovered during a physical before training camp in September. Dr. Robert Dimeff said Peverley was given the option of treating atrial fibrillation, the most common type of heart arrhythmia, with a minor adjustment and medication or missing several months to undergo a more invasive approach. “He said, Im new to the team, its a new coach, a new general manager, I only have a two-year contract, theyve got to know that I can play,” Dimeff said of Peverley, who came to the Stars in an off-season trade from the Boston Bruins. “And so we went back and forth. That was a joint decision, an informed decision on his part.” Dimeff said Peverleys heart likely raced out of control and then stopped during the game against Columbus on Monday night, but probably for no more than about 10 seconds before medical personnel got it going again in the tunnel behind the Dallas bench at American Airlines Center.ddddddddddddThe game was postponed. The procedure Peverley skipped in September, called an ablation, will likely be performed within days. When he walked out of the news conference at St. Paul University Hospital, Peverley could be seen wearing a device that a doctor later described as something that monitors his heart rate constantly and can automatically implement corrective measures if the heartbeat gets out of rhythm. Peverley remains hospitalized, but all heart tests have been normal, Dimeff said. “The last couple of days have been a lot of anxiety, a lot of unknown,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said. “It turns out that its a great day to walk in here, to see Rich Peverley walking in here.” Dimeff said the question of whether its safe for Peverley to play hockey again wasnt one they wanted to address yet. Peverley was sidelined through the first game of the regular season after the condition was diagnosed, then played in 60 straight games before complaining of discomfort that caused him to miss a game at Columbus last week. He played in two more games before his collapse. ’ ’ ’

The jest fell flat in the wake of the Dolphins 2013 bullying scandal, in which Pouncey was implicated. The Dolphins took Tennessee tackle JaWuan James with the 19th overall choice Thursday. “Great pick! I cant wait for our gifts hes getting us lol,” Pouncey tweeted. An investigation into the bullying scandal found Pouncey followed guard Richie Incognitos lead in harassing Jonathan Martin, who left the team during the season. Pressure on Martin to give other linemen gifts was part of an alleged pattern of harassment. On Friday, general manager Dennis Hickey ssaid he cleared the air with Pouncey regarding the tweet.dddddddddddd “Mike understands that sometimes things can be taken out of context, and whats meant as a lighthearted comment can be taken out of context,” Hickey said. “He was good with that, and understands that social media is a great tool to reach our fans for the positive, but you just have to make good choices with that. So were all good.” Pouncey is only offensive line starter from last season still with the team. James said he had no problem with Pounceys tweet. “Hes probably just playing and just saying things,” James said. “Its all part of the process being a rookie. PHOENIX - Taking on the NBAs most prolific backcourt, Eric Bledsoe and Goran Dragic more than held their own. Bledsoe scored seven of his 24 points in the fourth quarter and Dragic added 21 points to help the Phoenix Suns hold off Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors 106-102 Sunday night for their fifth straight win. “For this game, facing one of the best 1-2 punches in the game right now, it was a challenge,” Bledsoe said. “We definitely feel good about ourselves.” Bledsoe added eight rebounds and eight assists and Channing Frye added 20 for the Suns, who snapped a six-game losing streak against Golden State. Curry scored 30 points, including 20 in the second half, and Klay Thompson added 19 for the Warriors, who have lost three of four. David Lee added 18 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double. “I am finding that the guys in the suit and tie want it more than the guys in uniform,” Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "Its disappointing right now. We are going to be fine, but its disappointing to once again lose in the same fashion. “We see it. Everybody sees it. But I dont see anybody in uniform with that same passion. Enough is enough at some point. We are watching the same movie every single night.” The Warriors lost even though Curry and Thompson bettered their 44 points-per-game average and went a combined 6 for 11 on 3-pointers. “We think our guards can play with any of them,” Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said. “Those are two great guards that they have on that team and our guys fought them all game.” Golden State trailed by as many as nine in the third quarter, but pulled to within 76-75 on Currys 3-pointer that capped a 10-2 Golden State run. Maurice Speights brought the Warriors even for the first time since 3:41 of the first quarter, sinking a 3-pointer with 1:15 left in the third to knot the score at 81-all. But Golden State, which surrendered the lead for the final time five minutes into the game, could not pull ahead despite Currys best efforts. “They did a great job of fighting back in it, but we did a great job of staying solid,” Bledsoe said. Phoenix opened the fourth quarter leading 81-80 and stretched the lead to six on Bledsoes jumper with 9:20 to go. Curry made it 92-91 on a 3-pointer with 7:49 left, but Marcus Morris hit a jump shot and added a free throw to stretch the lead to 95-91. Thompson made two free throws with 5:21 left to cut the Suns lead to one and had a chance to give Golden State the lead, but his 3-point attempt bounced off the back iron. Bledsoe and Frye hit consecutive 3-pointers to put the Suns ahead 102-95 with 3:19 left. Curry answered with a long 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it 102-100 with 1:37 left. “With those guys you never know,” Dragic said. “Even when youre up 15, they still can win the game.” Curry missed a forced 15-footer with the shot clock running down while defended by P.J. Tucker and Bledsoe made two free throws to secure the win. “He played good defence. I couldnt get a shot off,” Curry said. “I tried to draw a foul and get him up in the air but he didnt go for it.” Tucker hit his only 3-pointer and Gerald Green added four points as the Suns closed the first quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 33-27 lead. Phoenix extended its lead to 59-46 with 1:27 left in the first half, but Curry scored five points to lead a 7-0 run that brought the Warriors back to 59-53 at halftime. NOTES: The Suns had three 20-point scorers for the first time this season. … Curry has scored 20 or more in 10 straight games. … Dragic has three straight 20-plus point games for the third time in his career and for the first time with the Suns. … Frye started the first half 5 for 5 from the floor, including 3 for 3 from beyond the 3-point line, until ending the streak on a half-court heave at the halftime buzzer. … Before the Warriors six-game winning streak in the series, Phoenix had won seven in a row. … Golden State F Andre Iguodala missed his 12th straight game with a left hamstring strain. EDMONTON — What looked like an easy two-point evening ended up with the Boston Bruins hanging on for dear life. Jarome Iginla scored twice as the Eastern Conference-leading Bruins withstood a barrage in the third period to hold on and defeat the West cellar-dwelling Edmonton Oilers 4-2 on Thursday. Dennis Seidenberg and Brad Marchand also scored for the Bruins (22-8-2), who have won four in a row and eight of their last 10. The Bruins had a 3-0 lead after the first period, but found themselves under siege for much of the rest of the game. “I told the guys that they would come back hard on us,” said Boston coach Claude Julien. “I didnt like the goals we gave up for what we expect of our team. They were sloppy, but credit to the Oilers. They skated and showed their skill level and gave us a really tough game. At the end we were just hanging on. Our bench is short and we have been struggling with the health of our team and you could see that it was a matter of winning it in regulation or I dont think we come out of here with a win.” Marchand said all that mattered was the end result on the night. “Its a road win and we have to be happy with it,” he said. “We know we are not going to put our best game on the ice every night, but we want to keep building. With all of the injuries we have right now, every win is huge.” Bruins backup goalie Chad Johnson made 39 saves and was especially tested in a third period that saw his team outshot 13-3. “It was a tough game to hold on in,” he said. “Sometimes it is like that. Sometimes you have to hold on. We battled really hard. I thought the guys did a good job killing penalties and battling defensively.” David Perron replied with both goals for the Oilers (11-19-3), who have lost two of their last three and dropped to 6-10-2 on home ice. “I dont know if we won a battle in the first period,” said Oilers coach Dallas Eakins. “I dont know if we were, The Bruins are in town, theyre one of the best teams in the league and we need to play cautious. You cant play cautious against anybody, youll get killed if you give them too much time and space. But even though we werent winning the battles, I didnt think the first period was as bad as the shot clock showed or the score was. I still felt we had a chance if we could get a goal.” Perron felt his team might have deserved a different fate in the game. “I felt even after the first period the score wasnt reflective of the game,” he said. “I thought they were outplaying us, but not by that much. Not by three goals anyway. We did our job in the second and were probably going to have nightmares about not scoring in the last minute and hitting the post.” Edmonton has lost 11 straight games to the Bruins dating back to 2000. There was a ggood pace to the game in the early going before the Bruins started the scoring.dddddddddddd Edmonton starter Devan Dubnyk whiffed on a long hopeful shot from the blue-line by Seidenberg, who was sending the puck in while his team made a line change just past the mid-mark of the first period. Boston made it 2-0 with four minutes left in the opening period on another long shot goal as Edmonton-area native Iginla scored on a slapshot with Milan Lucic providing a screen in front. It was Iginlas first game in Edmonton as a member of any team other than the rival Calgary Flames. The Bruins then took a dominating three-goal edge thanks to a short-handed goal with 1:43 left in the first. Philip Larsens shot was blocked at the point, allowing Boston to break away on a 2-on-1 that was capitalized on when Patrice Bergeron fed Marchand for his fifth goal of the season. The Oilers have allowed a league-high seven short-handed goals this season. Edmonton backup goaltender Jason LaBarbera came in to replace Dubnyk to start the second period. The Oilers finally got on the board three-and-a-half minutes into the second as Perron gained the zone and beat Johnson stick-side with a quick wrist shot for this team-leading 13th goal of the season. Edmonton cut Bostons lead to one goal with two-and-a-half minutes left in the second as Perron picked up a puck behind the net and fought off Bergeron with one hand while hooking the puck around and into the net with a highlight-reel move. The shots were an even 28-28 after 40 minutes. The Oilers pressed hard for the equalizer in the first 13 minutes of the third period – out-shooting the Bruins 10-0 – but were unable to get a shot past Johnson. Edmonton continued to be all over Bostons zone, but the Bruins were able to put it away when Iginla scored an empty-net goal in the final minute. The Oilers embark on a four-game road trip, beginning on Friday in Vancouver. The Bruins follow the Oilers out west to face the Canucks on Saturday. Notes: It was Ferences first game against his old team since joining the Oilers as a free agent during the summer and subsequently being named captain. … The Bruins are battling the flu bug and hardest hit was goalie Tuuka Rask, who served as a backup to Johnson in the game. … The Bruins were also without forward Shawn Thornton, who was out pending a disciplinary hearing for his actions in the injury to Pittsburghs Brooks Orpick. … Out with injuries for Boston were forwards Daniel Paille (upper body), Loui Eriksson (concussion) and Chris Kelly (broken ankle) and defencemen Doug Hamilton (lower body) and Adam McQuaid (lower body). … The Oilers were absent forwards Boyd Gordon (shoulder) and Ryan Smyth (neck) and goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov (concussion). Defenceman Jeff Petry returned for the game. ’ ’ ’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Cam Newton wasnt flawless on Sunday. He didnt need to be. Newton threw for one touchdown and ran for another to overcome a shaky start, the defence intercepted Matt Ryan three times and the Carolina Panthers beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-10 for their fourth straight victory. Offensive tackle Jordan Gross was more impressed with Newton on Sunday than in the previous three games in which the third-year quarterback played near-perfect ball. “There were times today where he could have gotten rattled,” Gross said. “He took some shots and had some turnovers, but he didnt (get rattled). He kept on swinging.” Newton entered on quite a streak, completing 77 per cent of his passes with eight touchdowns — six passing and two rushing — and no turnovers in his previous three games. But he had two first half interceptions and wasnt sharp on his deep balls, regularly overthrowing his receivers. “He got a little carried away early on and tried to make things happen,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “The ball sailed a little bit on him today and when hes doing that its because hes anxious. Hes excited. He wants to do well. Its unfortunate that he didnt bring the ball down a little bit because there were some big plays left out there.” Still, Newton bounced back to throw for 249 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Greg Olsen, and also scored on an 8-yard run. Newton called his play “unacceptable.” “I didnt put my best foot forward in the first half,” he said. But his teammates were quick to back him up. “Everybody gets wrapped up in stats and quarterback ratings and yards per catch or whatever,” Olsen said. “At the end of the day, when you go out and you win 34-10 and you are the quarterback — you did your job.” The Panthers (5-3) pulled within a game of the New Orleans Saints, who lost to the New York Jets. Fullback Mike Tolbert scored his fifth touchdown in the last four games on a 4-yard burst and cornerback Drayton Florence intercepted Ryan and returned it 38 yards for a score to seal the win. At 2-6, the Falcons post-season hopes are fading fast. The Falcons continued to struggle without Julio Jones and Roddy White. Tony Gonzalez had six catches for 81 yards and a touchdown but the running game continues to struggle as Steven Jackson and company were held to a combined 78 yards on the ground. The Panthers defence limited Ryan to 219 yards and forced four turnovers — three interceptions. “I know Matt. Hes going to look at this film. Hes going to obsess over it,” Gonzalez said. “I have no doubt hes going to bounce back.” The Panthers got a huge break early in the fourth quarter. Leading 17-10, Carolinas Brandon LaFell broke free in Atlanta territory for a big gain but had the ball punched out from behind by cornerback Asante Samuel. The Falcons had a chance to recover, but the ball bounced right back into LaFells arms while he was on the ground. Newton scored on an 8-yard run on the next play to give Carolina a 24-10 lead with nine minutes remaining. “When youre winning, things happen in your favour,” LaFell said. “With all of the bad luck around here last year, that thing would have been lost. We got the luck of the bounce.” The Panthers put the game away on the next possession when Florence stepped in front of Ryans pass in the flat and returned it for the score — the first “pick 6” allowed by the Falcons since 2010, a span of 47 games. “If you play sports long enough, there will be ups and downs, and waves throughout that,” Ryan said. “Ive played poorly before, but its about trying to stop that at one, and moving on. I wasnt able to do that.” Carolina led 14-10 at halftime despite the two interceptions by Newton. Newtons 13-quarter streak of turnover-free football ended when he went long for Ted Ginn Jr. and was intercepted by Desmond Trufant in the second quarter. Newton turned it over again in the final seconds of the first half on an interception by rookie Robert Alford in the back of the end zone, ending a golden scoring opportunity. Atlantas only touchdown of the game came when Ryan hooked up on a 17-yard strike with Gonzalez in the back of the end zone. The Falcons might have had more, but Steven Jacksons 2-yard touchdown run was nullified on a holding penalty on lineman Garrett Reynolds forcing the Falcons to settle for a Matt Bryant field goal. NOTES: The Panthers lost starting right guard Chris Scott and backup Jeff Byers to injuries on Sunday, forcing them to use former defensive tackle Nate Chandler at that spot. … The Panthers have led at halftime in all eight games this season. … Jonathan Stewart had 43 yards rushing on nine carries and 22 yards receiving on three catches in his first game this season for the Panthers. Not exactly bursting with sentimental feelings, Matthew Lombardi makes an odd return to the state of Tennessee on Thursday night.BRISBANE, Australia — This was one time Serena Williams didnt mind being pushed into the deep end, to use her own description. The top-ranked Williams carried her winning momentum from 2013 into the new season, beating No. 2-ranked Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 7-5 on Saturday to defend her title at the Brisbane International and set the tone for the Australian Open. She extended her winning streak to 22 matches with the emphatic win over the reigning Australian Open champion, making it back-to-back victories over two of her main rivals. She beat four-time major winner Maria Sharapova in straight sets in an intense semifinal, her 14th consecutive win in that frosty duel. She improved to 14-3 against Azarenka, the last person to beat her last year. Before the semifinals, Williams said there was nothing like being “thrown into the deep end straight away.” Having come through those challenges, she thought it was the ideal season-opening tournament. “It was a great test. It showed me where my level was,” Williams said, looking ahead to the Australian Open. “Im happy I was able to play both Maria and Victoria, because they brought their A games against me. I know now what I need to do for Melbourne — I look forward to it.” The years first major starts Jan. 13 at Melbourne Park and Williams, who won 78 of her 82 matches and collected 11 titles last year, is positioning herself as the favourite to claim a sixth Australian title after winning a tournament featuring six of the top 10 women. Williams has so many trophies now, she said she doesnt know where they all are — “some are MIA” — but that doesnt stop her from collecting more. This was her 58th, including 17 majors. Immediately after the loss, Azarenka said she hopes to face Williams again in Melbourne — as the top two ranked players, they can only meet in the final. “I cant say Im satisfied today, but I want to take the positive, what Ive done today, and build from here towards the next week,” Azarenka said. “This is the first week where you really test yourself where yoour game is at, and from here you can take the positives and the things that you have to work on and really go after that.dddddddddddd” Williams earned the first break in the seventh game and hit fired consecutive aces to finish off the first set in 37 minutes. She went up a break immediately in the second set before Azarenka won four straight games to take a 4-2 lead. Williams, who was comparatively silent against a screeching opponent for the second straight night, let out a scream of relief and satisfaction after hitting an overhead winner to break back in the seventh game. And she yelled and pumped her arm again after converting a break in the 11th game with a backhand down line. Serving for the championship, Williams started with two aces — her 10th and 11th — and then hit a service winner to set up two championship points at 40-15. She fired an unreturnable serve to finish it off. The Williams sisters were hoping to both win a WTA Tour event in the same week for the first time in 15 years, but Ana Ivanovic prevented that when she beat Venus Williams 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand. It was the end of a personal drought for second-seeded Ivanovic, who claimed her 12th career singles title and her first since Bali in 2011. Venus Williams was the crowds sentimental favourite after reaching the final of her first tournament since September. After a long struggle with injury and illness, her form in Auckland supported her claim that she is fitter and healthier than she has been in years. The mens final in Brisbane on Sunday will feature two 32-year-old former No. 1s. Top-seeded Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt earned three-set semifinal victories to advance, renewing a rivalry that stretches back to the last millennium. Federer beat No. 8-seeded Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 immediately after Hewitts 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over second-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan in sweltering heat topping 40 Celsius (104 F). The pair have met 26 times dating back to 1999, with Federer leading 18-8 including 16 of the last 17. ’ ’ ’

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Even when Andy Dalton is mixing interceptions and touchdowns, the Bengals somehow find a way to win at home. And thats the best thing the AFC North champions take with them into the post-season. Their next game will be at Paul Brown Stadium, where the Bengals are still perfect. Dalton threw for two touchdowns, ran for another and set a pair of Bengals passing records on Sunday, leading Cincinnati to a 34-17 victory that eliminated the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. The Bengals (11-5) are 8-0 at home and will host San Diego in a playoff game next Sunday. They beat the Chargers 17-10 in San Diego on Dec. 1. Cincinnati wound up with the No. 3 seed when New England beat Buffalo 34-20 later Sunday to clinch the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. “Were playing with a lot of confidence right now,” said Dalton, who was 21 of 36 for 281 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. "The last couple of years we played on the road. For us to have a home game here, itll be a great environment. “Were ready for the playoffs to start.” The Ravens (8-8) lost their last two games, denying them a chance to make the playoffs for a sixth straight season. They couldnt avoid the Super Bowl slump thats so common. The Ravens became the 15th Super Bowl champ that failed to reach the playoffs the following season, and the sixth in the last 12 years. Their running game fell apart, the offence had to settle for field goals, and the defence missed Ray Lewis inspiration in the big moments. “Thats it,” coach John Harbaugh said. “That ends it. That stings.” In Cincinnati, theres only one thing in mind: win a playoff game for the first time since the 1990 season. The Bengals lost opening-round games in Houston each of the last two seasons, leaving them tied for the seventh-longest stretch of playoff futility in NFL history. This time, theyll be playing at home, where theyve scored 49, 41, 42, 42 and 34 points in their last five games. “If we have to play next week or we have to play in two weeks, this team is going to carry this swagger and attitude into the playoffs,” offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth said. “If we continue to put up 30-plus points a game and continue playing defence the way we are, well have a chance to make a lot of noise.” Most of the focus will be on Dalton, who had two horrid games in the playoffs. He put together one of the best seasons by a Bengals quarterback, breaking Carson Palmers club records for touchdown passes and yards passing on Sunday. Dalton threw interceptions on Cincinnatis first two possessions, then regrouped. He threw a 53-yard pass to A.J. Green, who got behind a defence that went for a fake handoff. Marvin Jones made a one-hand, diving catch in the end zone for a 16-yard score just before halftime. Daltons 33rd TD pass surpassed Palmers club record from 2005. He finished 21 of 36 for 281 yards, breaking Palmers club record for yards passing in a season with 4,296. After the Ravens tied it 17-all in the third quarter, Dalton led a 90-yard drive that ended with his 1-yard touchdown run. “He just keeps being Andy,” coach Marvin Lewis said. “He just keeps playing.” All too often this season, the Ravens settled for field goals when they got close to the goal line. They did it again on Sunday, managing only three field goals off Daltons first three three interceptions. Justin Tucker was good from 38, 22 and 34 yards, giving him a club record of 38 field goals. The Ravens took advantage of Shawn Powells 10-yard shanked punt and evened it 17-all in the third quarter. Flacco threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Marlon Brown, and Ray Rice ran for the 2-point conversion. Dre Kirkpatrick had two interceptions in the fourth quarter that sealed it, including a 21-yard return for a touchdown. CHICAGO – The Chicago Blackhawks are trying get into a groove so they can head into the playoffs firing on all cylinders. Even without star forward Patrick Kane, the defending Stanley Cup champions showed signs of moving in the right direction Tuesday night. Andrew Shaw and Duncan Keith each had a goal and an assist, and Chicago held on for a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars. “We did some good things throughout the game,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “All four lines were contributing and our special teams were good as well. Good win.” Kris Versteeg and Marian Hossa also scored for Chicago, which needs just one more point to clinch a playoff berth for the sixth straight season. Patrick Sharp added two assists to help Chicago finish 4-1 against Dallas in the Central Division rivals regular-season series. “It was a big win tonight,” said Keith, second in scoring among defencemen with 57 points. “Theyre a hungry team, fighting for their playoff lives.” Ryan Garbutt scored twice for the Stars, who fell three points behind Phoenix for the final Western Conference playoff berth. Dallas matched Chicagos speed and effort early, but eventually the Blackhawks took over and built a 3-1 lead. Garbutts second goal cut it to 3-2 late in the third, but Hossa empty-netter sealed the Blackhawks solid effort. Chicagos Corey Crawford made 25 saves, while Dallas Kari Lehtonen blocked 38 shots. “Theyre a fast team, can really skate,” Crawford said. "They got the jump early and then our D were able to shut them down really good. “They really shut down everything in the third period.” Dallas Tyler Seguin set up Garbutts goal in the second period to extend his point streak to 10 games. He has seven goals and 10 assists during the run. Blackhawks top prospect Teuvo Teravainen didnt record a point in his NHL debut, but logged 11 minutes and 39 seconds of ice time. The 19-year-old forward was Chicagos first-round draft pick in 2012 and led his team in Finland, Jokerit, in scoring this season. Chicago played its third game without Kane, who is on long-term injured reserve and may miss the rest of the regular season. Dallas had several good chances early, including Garbutts breakaway just over 2 minutes in. Crawford stopped his close-in rising shot with a glove save. “We hung around the first 10 minutes and Garbutt had the breakaway,” Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "But I thought they slowly started taking it away from us. “We slowed the game down and they sped it up all the time.” Chicago took charge as the period progressed, then Shaws power-play goal with 18 seconds left in the first opened the scoring. Shaw swept in a rebound of Sharps shot from the blue line with a highlight-reel effort. Shaw was knocked to the ice by Dallas defenceman Trevor Daley in the crease, but backhanded in the loose puck as he fell to his knees and while facing away from the net. Versteeg was credited with a goal at 4:12 of the second that made it 2-0. After Dallas Antoine Roussel failed to clear the puck, Versteeg slid a pass toward Hossa who was cruising in down the slot. Rousell reached with his stick to break up the pass, but deflected the pucks past Lehtonen. Garbutt didnt miss on his second breakaway of the game, and cut it to 2-1 midway through the second. He skated in behind the Blackhawks defence after Seguin banked a pass off the left boards from the Stars zone. Garbutt cut across the crease and slipped a backhander between Crawfords pads. Keith restored Chicagos two-goal lead at 3-1 with 5:45 left in the period on a fluttering screened shot from the left point. Garbutts second goal cut it to 3-2 with 5:40 left in the third. Following Nick Leddys turnover in the right corner of the Chicago zone, Garbutt carried the puck to the net. Crawford stopped his first shot, but Garbutt stuffed in the rebound from right side of the goal. “Its too bad we couldnt get the third (goal) there,” Garbutt said. "Its doesnt matter if its pretty or not this time of year. “Well just take what we can get and need to start scoring more as a team.” Hossa fired into an empty net with 33.3 seconds left to complete the scoring. Notes: Keith has six goals and 51 assists for his 57 points. … The Blackhawks won 49 of 71 faceoffs on Tuesday. Captain Jonathan Toews was 23-for-28 and Teravainen was 7-for-7. Blackhawks F Bryan Bickell (upper-body) and D Michal Rozsival (lower-body) each missed their third games with injuries. … Dallas F Erik Cole sat out his third game with an upper-body injury. … Long-time Blackhawks beat writer Tim Sassone, who passed away Tuesday, was honoured with a moment of silence before the game. BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Ravens had just beaten their bitter rivals in record-breaking fashion, and some of the players felt inclined to put some perspective on their 35-7 manhandling of the defending AFC champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Although their overwhelming victory Sunday provided a bit of payback for Januarys playoff loss — and dont think the Ravens did not remember that game — coach John Harbaugh and his players have turned their attention toward this season. And Baltimore could not have possibility started it any better. Joe Flacco threw three touchdown passes, Haloti Ngata led an inspired defence that forced a team-record seven turnovers, and the Ravens rolled to their most lopsided victory in a hotly contested series that began in 1996. “The whole thing about ghosts, demons, monkeys on your back — thats not real to us,” Harbaugh said. “This is the 2011 Baltimore Ravens.” Ray Rice ran for 107 yards and scored twice for the Ravens, who bolted to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and never let up. It was a rematch of a second-round playoff game in which the Steelers rallied to beat Baltimore 31-24. That day, the Ravens let a 21-7 halftime lead evaporate with three turnovers in the third quarter. At halftime of this one, Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis spoke loudly in the locker-room after his teammates compared the two games. “They were saying, Weve been here before,” Lewis said. “No, we havent been here before. This is a whole new year.” This time, the Ravens got three takeaways in the third quarter to turn a 21-7 advantage into a rout. Revenge? Not quite. Just a chance to move on. “That playoff taste? Now its over,” Rice said. “They beat us in the playoffs, all right. We got that burden off our shoulders, boom, were one up on them. Thats how we got to approach this.” Ngata was the driving force Sunday, causing a fumble and deflecting a pass that produced an interception. Ed Reed also picked off two passes for the Ravens, who mercilessly harassed nemesis Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger had won seven straight starts against the Ravens, but in this one he was 22 for 41 for 280 yards and three interceptions. “I guess they were waiting for this one,” Roethlisberger said. “Its not the way you want to start it for us, obviously (but) Id rather this be a Week 1 loss than a Week 13, 14, 15 loss.” The defeat ended Pittsburghs eight-game winning streak in season openers. The Steelers committed six turnovers after halftime and were dominated on both sides of the field. “We got beat into submission,” linebacker James Farrior said. Flacco went 17 for 29 without an intercepption, getting the best of Roethlisberger and giving the Ravens an early advantage over their AFC North foes.dddddddddddd “This was a huge win for us against Pittsburgh today, but without us playing great in these next 15 games, its not going to mean anything,” Flacco said. In the past 51 games, only twice has Pittsburgh allowed a runner to reach 100 yards. Rice did it both times. Rice had more yards at halftime on rushes (89) and catches (38) than Pittsburgh did on its 26 offensive plays (113). Before the game, both teams and the crowd of 71,434 marked the 10-year anniversary of 9-11 by standing silent while “Taps” was played over the public address system. Then a giant American flag was unfurled, covering the entire field. Players on both sidelines held the flag in place while the national anthem was sung. The Steelers won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, giving the Ravens the chance to get the ball first. Baltimore made the most of the opportunity — and didnt take much time doing so. Rice ran for 36 yards on the first play, then carried for three yards to the 27 before Flacco lofted a touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin. Baltimore turned a Roethlisberger miscue into a touchdown to make it 14-0 late in the first quarter. Roethlisberger fumbled when sacked by Terrell Suggs and Ngata recovered the ball at the Pittsburgh 37. Flaccos 29-yard completion to tight end Dennis Pitta set up a one-yard touchdown run by Rice. The Steelers then got their first score of the 2011 season, an 11-yard touchdown pass from Roethlisberger to Emmanuel Sanders. Baltimore went up 21-7 with an 84-yard march in which Flacco converted three third-and-6 situations, the last with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Rice on third down. In the third quarter, Ngata forced a fumble on the first play from scrimmage by driving into Rashard Mendenhall immediately after the running back took a handoff. Ngata recovered the loose ball, and Flacco threw an 18-yard TD pass to Ed Dickson on the next play. To add insult, Baltimore added a two-point conversion when holder Sam Koch ran the ball in on a fake kick. After the kickoff, Ngata tipped a Roethlisberger pass and Lewis made the interception. But the Ravens were stopped on a fourth-and-1. An interception by Reed led to a field goal by Billy Cundiff for a 32-7 lead. NOTES: Pittsburgh LB James Harrison left in the fourth quarter with a bruised knee. … Ravens rookie CB Jimmy Smith sprained his ankle on a first-quarter kickoff and did not return. … Suggs had three sacks to become the Ravens career leader with 71 1/2, passing Peter Boulware. … Reed has 12 career multi-interception games. ’ ’ ’

Jill Ellis has been named the U.S. national team coach in the run-up to the womens World Cup next summer in Canada and beyond. Ellis has been the interim coach since Tom Sermanni was surprisingly dismissed in early April after an exhibition victory against China. It was Ellis second stint as an interim coach with the team; she also took over when previous head coach Pia Sundhage resigned in 2012 to become head coach of Swedens national team. Ellis has a 6-0-3 record overall as the teams interim coach. Ellis was an assistant to both Sermanni and Sundhage. She was on the staff of the gold medal-winning U.S. teams at the Beijing and London Olympics. The 47-year-old coach, who is well respected among national team players, has had a lengthy coaching career, including 12 seasons at UCLA. “Not beating around the bush, I know the expectation, embrace the expectation,” Ellis said Friday. “I know that we want to win, and I think this group is capable of winning. Thats what we want, it is always the expectation. People ask me if thats intimidating and I say no, because when you work for U.S. soccer its about winning gold medals and standing on the first-place podium.” The U.S. womens team, which has been ranked No. 1 for the past six years, next plays a pair of exhibition matches against France in Tampa, Florida, and East Hartford, Connecticut, in mid-June. The United States will host the eight-team CONCACAF qualifying tournament in October for the 2015 World Cup, according to an announcement Friday. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place in Mexico but there were “issues” concerning the venues, U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said. The venues and schedule for the tournament have yet to be determined. Despite the teams success on the international stage in recent years, the U.S. women havent won a World Cup title since 1999. Japan won the 2011 World Cup in Germany, defeating the United States on a penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw after extra time. “The job description is to win next summer,” Gulati said during a conference call Friday announcing Ellis appointment. Beyond that, the U.S. team will also look to defend back-to-back-to-back Olympic titles in Brazil the following year. Sermanni helped the U.S. to a 13-0-3 record last year, but the Americans went 1-2-1 at the Algarve Cup in March, the last major tournament for the U.S. before qualifying this fall. The seventh-place Algarve Cup finish included a 1-0 loss to Sweden and Sundhage, ending a two-year, 43-game unbeaten streak. That was the first loss following a 16-0-4 start under Sermanni. Ellis led the team to a 3-0 exhibition win in the second match against China after Sermanni was dismissed. “Were comfortable with Jill, we love Jill, we have a lot of respect for Jill, and she didnt really miss a beat. She put the pen on the board and she just started coaching,” U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo said following the match. “Im always honoured to be coached by Jill. Every time she has something to say, I always perk up and listen.” Ellis will step down from her position as U.S. Soccer womens development director now that she is the head coach, the organization said. “We think Jills got all the right credentials, both in terms of experience, and how she relates to the players — weve been able to see that firsthand in the two times shed been with the senior team and previously with our youth teams,” Gulati said. “She gets top marks in all the work shes been doing on the technical side with all of our programs in the last several years. Its all of those things.” cheap jerseys from china . In the days leading up to the draft, TSN.ca and TSN Radio basketball analyst Duane Watson looks at some of the names that will be headlining the event. Watch the 2014 NBA Draft on TSN, Thursday at 7pm et/4pm pt. Name: Khem BirchFrom: Montreal, QuebecPlayed: University of Nevada, Las VegasHeight: 69"Weight: 209 Position: Power Forward2013-2014 Stats: 11.5 points per game, 10.2 rebounds, 3.8 blocks Breakout Game: 15 points, 15 rebounds, 6 blocks assists in win vs. Boise State on Feb 1.Accolades: 2013-14 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year, finished second in the nation in blocked shots per game.Draft Projection: Mid-late second round.Comparable NBA player: Chris Andersen Khem Birchs young basketball career has already been fuelled by some interesting decisions. Birch entered the NCAA ranks as the 11th-best high school player in the United States, and accepted a scholarship with the University of Pittsburgh. However, the Montreal native controversially left Pitt only 10 games into his freshman season. At the point of his departure, he earned a spot in the starting line up and showed glimpses of the defence and athleticism that made him a blue chip prospect. Yet after citing team issues of selfishness, he returned home to figure out his next move, which would eventually lead him to transfer to UNLV. Birch played two seasons at UNLV, his first coinciding with Toronto native Anthony Bennetts standout fresshman campaign that culminated in his first overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.dddddddddddd Bennett outshined Birch with his dominant play and impressive stat line, yet Birch was named Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year. This season with Bennett out of the picture, Birch almost doubled his scoring (7.5 ppg to 11.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.7 rpg to 10.2 rpg) averaging a double-double, and again winning Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year honours. Despite improvement across the board Birch is very much a raw athlete, and instead of spending another year at school to work on his offensive game, he declared for the 2014 NBA Draft. Birchs strength is his defence. His 71" wingspan placed him second in the NCAA in blocked shots behind fellow Canadian Jordan Bachynski at a clip of 3.8 per game. His quickness and mobility make him a strong rim protector and help defender where his tenacity on defence cant be overlooked, tallying 1.2 steals per game. Offensively, he can run the floor and moves well without the ball, but is very limited in terms of offensive moves. His inability to create his own shot, coupled with his slight build will make it hard for him to maintain position in the low post. Quite simply, Birch will have to bulk up, which will help him on the defensive end as well. A great athlete with a high motor equals lots of upside, yet hes still a project. If an NBA team wants to develop him and help round out his game, its not a risk, but a long-term investment. It would be an interesting choice, however thats something that Birch is not averse to. ’ ’ ’
