Téma: Jak postupovat / Kentucky was forced to BOSTON — A few relaxing words from David Ortiz helped get Rubby De La Rosa in the right frame of mind for his first start in nearly three years. De La Rosa pitched seven shutout innings, Brock Holt hit his first career homer and the Boston Red Sox won their sixth straight with a 7-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday night. The teams kept it clean a day after having their second benches-clearing scrum in less than a week. Taking the mound for a tense start after the teams cleared the benches in their last two meetings, De La Rosa heard all he needed from Big Papi. “David told me whatever happened last night, just focus on pitching,” said De La Rosa, who allowed four hits and struck out eight without issuing a walk in his first start since July 31, 2011, when he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Holt and Jackie Bradley Jr. each hit two-run homers, and Jonathan Herrera had three singles as the Red Sox continued to rebound from a recent 10-game losing streak. There was no carry-over from Friday nights game, when three Red Sox managers and a pitcher were ejected after Rays starter David Price hit Ortiz in the first inning and Mike Carp in the fourth. “No pregame warnings,” Boston manager John Farrell said. “We met with the umpiring crew before the game, just had a chance to talk about a couple of things. That was it.” De La Rosa (1-0), recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Pawtucket, made his first start for the Red Sox. “He showed four pitches for strikes,” Farrell said. “Given the environment, given what we went through last night, he was outstanding.” The 25-year old right-hander was acquired in Bostons salary-dump deal in August 2012 that sent Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez to the Dodgers. Rays first baseman James Loney, who also came over in the deal with De La Rosa, remembered the talent the righty showed. “Yeah. hes always had an electric arm and wants to be out there, a good competitor,” he said. “Hes probably what, mid 20s? Back then, he was a good pitcher and you knew he was going to be good.” Kevin Kiermaier had an inside the park homer for the Rays, who have lost five straight. It came when Bradley Jr. attempted a leaping grab and the ball caromed off the Green Monster, off his face and rolled away as he was down on the ground. Rays manager Joe Maddon was happy the teams didnt follow Fridays hard feelings with any nastiness. “It was really nice to go out there and not be concerned with a bunch of garbage and just play the game,” he said. “I was pleased with that a lot. I thought it was a well-played game.” Last Sunday at Tropicana Field, the clubs had a scrum after the Red Sox were yelling from the dugout when Yunel Escobar stole third with the Rays holding a big lead. Rays starter Jake Odorizzi (2-5) lasted just 3 1-3 innings, giving up five runs and six hits with two wild pitches. The Red Sox grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third when Holt homered in Bostons bullpen after Herrera singled. Carp added a sacrifice fly. Boston added two more in the fourth and chased Odorizzi. Herrera dropped down a safety squeeze, and was credited with a hit, when Grady Sizemore slid in just under the throw, making it 4-0. A.J. Pierzynski added an RBI single. Bradley Jr.s two-run homer made it 7-0 in the fifth. NOTES: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia was out with a sore right hand. He was hurt on a swing in Friday. He had an MRI and the results showed “no further or structural damage.” … Rays RF Wil Myers and SS Escobar were also out with injuries. Myers hurt his right hand in a fall when he tumbled over CF Desmond Jennings as the pair collided on Pierzynskis game-ending triple on Friday. Escobar injured his quad running out a grounder Friday, but Maddon said he should be back “(Sunday) or Monday at the worst.” … Red Sox LHP Jon Lester (5-6, 3.45 ERA) faces LHP Erik Bedard (2-3, 4.10) in the series finale on Sunday. … To make room for De La Rosa, the Red Sox optioned OF/1B Daniel Nava to Pawtucket. Florida (32-2) built a 16-point lead early in the second half, but Kentucky nearly pulled off an improbable comeback to hand the Gators their first loss since early December. Two missed free throws gave the Wildcats (24-10) a final possession, but James Young slipped trying to drive into the lane. The ball squirted loose, and the horn sounded while Floridas Scottie Wilbekin and Kentuckys Andrew Harrison dived for it. A giddy Wilbekin popped up and sprinted toward the Gators bench in celebration. Harrison rolled over with the ball, then put his hands over his face in anguish. The Gators extended their school-record winning streak to 26 games and awaited a sure No. 1 seed when the NCAA pairings were announced Sunday evening. Patric Young and Michael Frazier II led Florida with 14 points apiece, while Wilbekin and Casey Prather had 11 each. Kentucky, also headed for the NCAAs, was paced by Aaron Harrison with 16 points. Young added 13, while Willie Cauley-Stein had 10 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Florida led 40-30 at halftime and scored the first six points of the second half for its biggest lead. But Kentucky ussed a 14-0 run to close within one point with just over 6 minutes remaining.dddddddddddd It was a nail-biter the rest of the way, the Wildcats coming oh-so-close to beating the first team to go 18-0 in SEC play during the regular season. First, Andrew Harrison drove down the middle of the lane and put up a running jumper with 33 seconds remaining, but the shot clanked off the rim. Dorian Finney-Smith grabbed the rebound for the Gators. Kentucky was forced to foul three times to get Florida into the bonus. With 23 seconds left, Wilbekin missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but Finney-Smith came up with another huge rebound and was quickly fouled by the Wildcats. Finney-Smith missed the front end, too, giving Kentucky a chance to win it. Coming out of a timeout, the Wildcats didnt even get off a shot. Andrew Harrison dribbled the clock down at the top of the key, then dished off to Young on the right wing. He tried to cut into the lane, bumped a Florida player and tumbled to the court. That was it. Florida ran off the court with its first conference tournament title since 2007, when the Gators went on to capture the second of consecutive national titles. They had lost in the tournament final two of the last three years. Kentucky was denied its 28th tournament championship. The Wildcats have more titles than all the other SEC schools combined. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / and Philadelphia, have los MINSK, Belarus — Alex Burrows suffered an apparent right knee injury in the first period of Team Canadas game against Italy at the world hockey championship and will not return. Italian forward Joachim Ramoser made knee-on-knee contact with Burrows in Canadas offensive zone with 56 seconds left in the first period. Burrows, who plays for the Vancouver Canucks, was down on the ice in a lot of pain before being attended to by trainers and helped off the ice. The 33-year-old Burrows was not able to put any pressure on his right leg as he was helped off by Brayden Schenn and Nathan MacKinnon. Ramoser was given a five-minute major penalty and an automatic game misconduct. A Hockey Canada spokesman said early in the second period that Burrows was out of the game with a lower-body injury and was being evaluated. Its the second straight year a Canadian player was the victim of a knee-on-knee hit at this tournament. Téma: Jak postupovat / prompting manager Ron G NEW YORK — Mark Teixeira has provided consistent power for weeks. The rest of the New York Yankees joined in Saturday. Teixeira hit a two-run homer, Zoilo Almonte connected in his first start of the season and New York went deep five times for a 7-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was the second time since 2011 that five Yankees players homered in one game. “It was nice to see,” manager Joe Girardi said. “Our team is built for this park.” Brett Gardner and Alfonso Soriano also homered off a struggling Edinson Volquez to back five scoreless innings from David Phelps (1-0). Brian McCann added a two-run drive in the eighth against reliever Vin Mazzaro as New York won for only the second time in eight home games. Coming off consecutive road shutouts against the crosstown rival Mets, the Yankees took their third straight following a four-game slide. “We had a very good game overall,” Soriano said. “Thats what we expect.” Starling Marte homered and had three hits in his return to the starting lineup for the Pirates, winless at Yankee Stadium since Harvey Haddix pitched them to a 5-2 victory in Game 5 of the 1960 World Series. Volquez (1-4) gave up six hits — four homers — and no walks in 6 1-3 innings, dropping to 0-4 in his last five starts. Teixeira connected on a 1-2 pitch following Derek Jeters single in the first for his eighth home run in his last 17 games. It was the 350th of his career, tying Chili Davis for sixth place among switch-hitters. Almonte sent Volquezs first pitch of the third into the raised bleachers in right-centre for his second major league homer. Called up from the minors Tuesday, Almonte was a late addition to the lineup when centre fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was scratched with flu-like symptoms. Gardner homered leading off the sixth and Soriano did the same in the seventh. “They are great hitters and I made a lot of mistakes,” Volquez said. “You cannot make a lot of mistakes in this ballpark.” After a rainout Friday night, 47,353 fans turned out on a beautiful afternoon for the Pirates first visit to the current Yankee Stadium. They went 0-6 in interleague games at the old place, swept in a June 2005 series and again two years later. Phelps pitched out of early trouble to earn his first win as a starter since July 4, 2013, at Minnesota. After beginning the season in the bullpen, the right-hander was making his third start since replacing injured Michael Pineda in the rotation. “At the end of the day it was five zeros and Ill take that,” he said. “You dont want to grind every time out, but its one thing that Ive kind of done this year. I havent really had my best stuff yet.” Phelps got some help from the overaggressive Pirates, who ran into three outs on the bases. “We were pushing guys out there,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “Those are the chances you want to take when youre not getting those big hits with runners in scoring position, try to push yourself across the plate or get yourself in scoring position.” Dellin Betances tossed two innings in relief before Adam Warren and Matt Daley finished up. Phelps is 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA in his last three starts at Yankee Stadium. “He made pitches when he had to,” Girardi said. “There were some good plays.” Pirates bopper Pedro Alvarez, who grew up a few miles from Yankee Stadium, went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts in his first game against the Yankees. He left about a dozen tickets for family and friends and was expecting his father to be in the crowd. Two calls were overturned on replay challenges, one in favour of each team. Both plays involved tags by Jeter at second base. “We won with the home run today, which were capable of doing,” Teixeira said. “We have to score a little bit more and I think the last few games our pitching has really picked us up. So its good to see us break out today.” NOTES: Marte (lower back tightness) made his first start in a week. … 1B Ike Davis, traded by the Mets last month, went 0 for 3 with a walk and three strikeouts in his return to New York. … Girardi said he would be “kind of shocked” if LHP CC Sabathia (right knee) is able to return after only 15 days on the disabled list. “We dont know when hes coming back,” Girardi said. … Pineda (shoulder muscle) is scheduled to throw 25 pitches on the side Sunday. … Ichiro Suzuki (back) entered in RF in the ninth and is likely to play in the traditional doubleheader Sunday — the first single-admission twinbill at Yankee Stadium since 2004. … RHP Hiroki Kuroda chose to start the opener Sunday against Pirates RHP Charlie Morton. The Lions traded their fifth overall pick in the 2014 CFL Draft to the Ottawa Redblacks for QB Kevin Glenn. MINNEAPOLIS — The Chicago White Sox havent conceded the division race, during yet another mercurial season for temperamental manager Ozzie Guillens team. Jake Peavy sure pitched like he isnt giving up. Peavy won for the first time in more than six weeks with eight shutout innings, and the White Sox beat the Twins 7-0 Sunday to sweep a three-game series in Minnesota for the first time in more than seven years. “Were going to grind things out,” Peavy said. “Thats a testament to these guys who have not mailed it in. After that last stretch, we couldve come in here, our heads hung low, and mailed it in on a team that has had our number.” Brent Lillibridge, Paul Konerko, Alexei Ramirez and Alex Rios each hit home runs for the White Sox, who had lost 29 of 36 games to their nemesis until winning three straight at Target Field this weekend. The backsliding Twins have lost seven of their last eight games overall. Thats what the White Sox looked like at the beginning of the weekend, after losing six in a row after finally pulling back to the .500 mark. Those defeats did come against the top two teams in the American League, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, though, and with 50 games left in the underwhelming AL Central the White Sox arent at all out of it. Theyre still in third place, but they climbed to 5 1/2 games behind the Detroit Tigers. “Its all about confidence,” Guillen said. “Theyve got their confidence back, and they know they can win.” Peavy (5-5) last picked up a victory by pitching four shutout innings in his first career relief appearance, June 25 against the Washington Nationals, three days after he beat the crosstown rival Cubs with a so-so start. The 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner hasnt been the same since coming to Chicago in a trade with the Padres, but the 30-year-old right-hander was in a rhythm that recalled his old San Diego form. “Once he got the lead, he just said, Im getting ahead of every hitter,” said Minnesotas Michael Cuddyer, marvelling at the way Peavy used and spotted his cut fastball. Cuddyer added: “They stuck it to us, all three games.” The power surge from Peavys teammates sure helped. The White Sox were averaging barely more than four runs per game when hes pitched, but little Lillibridge went deep for the second straight day in the second inniing and Konerko followed suit in the fourth — both shots to the same section in the second deck above left field off Brian Duensing (8-10).dddddddddddd The White Sox hit only 18 home runs in July, their fewest in that month since 1992. “You have to tip your hat to them. They hit the ball well,” said Duensing, lamenting that he left many of his sinkers up in the strike zone. Peavy, whose start was pushed back by one day, will probably have to play a big part for the White Sox to catch the Tigers. He gave up only three hits, all in the first three innings, and Joe Mauers double was the only way the Twins got a runner to second base. Peavy struck out six without a walk, hitting one batter. “Were just aggressive. I cant stand putting people on base,” Peavy said. “My stuff was OK, but it makes all the difference in the world when you get a two or three-run lead early.” Duensing lasted 6 1-3 innings, but he gave up nine hits — Rios had an RBI double to cap a stretch of three straight extra-base hits that started the fourth — and five runs while walking one and striking out four. One of those runs was unearned, due to a throwing error by Duensing in that rough fourth inning. He stopped a soft comebacker by Gordon Beckham but sent his throw well wide of first base, blowing an easy out and prompting manager Ron Gardenhire to rub his balding head before letting out a big sigh in the dugout. Thats the kind of mistake the Twins have been making lately, and being swept by the White Sox is a sure sign theyre struggling. They were 7-1 against their primary division rival this year until this weekend. “We have great players here. We had a good series,” Rios said. “Everybody did a good job. Thats what we need, to get things rolling.” Notes: The White Sox are the only AL team with a winning record on the road and a losing mark at home. Theyre 14-5 in their last 19 road games, including five wins in a row. … Guillen gave struggling DH/1B Adam Dunn a day off against a lefty and said he hopes Dunn can start fresh and finish strong this season. The manager also said he wants the slugger to come to spring training next year in better shape. … LH John Danks pitches Monday in Baltimore, facing RH Jeremy Guthrie of the Orioles. … Danks has a 1.69 ERA since June 6, the lowest in the majors in that span. ’ ’ ’ |

Connor Wickham opened the scoring and picked up a second to close the game off for the Black Cats. 17. Aston Villa (LW-15) Gabriel Agbonlahors 22nd marker was not nearly enough as Aston Villa fell 4-1 at the hands of Swansea City. 18. The Cottagers are very involved in the relagation fight. 19. Cardiff City (LW-18) A 4-0 loss to Sunderland has sent Cardiff City to the bottom of the table. The Welsh side will need at least two points and some goal differential help to stay in the Premier League. 20. Decker spent all day Wednesday at the Jets facility and had dinner with a contingent of team officials, including coach Rex Ryan. He gives quarterback Geno Smith and the offence a sorely needed playmaker and No. 1-type wide receiver. According to ESPNs Adam Schefter, its a five-year, $36.25 million deal with $16 million guaranteed. The Jets on Monday cut talented but oft-injured wide receiver Santonio Holmes after four seasons. The move saved the Jets $8.25 million, and Holmes was also scheduled to have a $10.75 million cap number, a lofty total for a one-time Super Bowl MVP who has struggled with inconsistency the last two seasons. He turned 30 last week. The Jets get a rising star in Decker, who last season combined with Demaryius Thomas as the most prolific receiving tandem (2,718 yards) in the league, meshing with Peyton Manning all year. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Decker, wholl be 27 on Saturday, set career highs with 87 catches and 1,288 yards receiving to go along with 11 touchdowns. He had 85 receptions for 1,064 yards and a career-best 13 TDs in 2012. Getting a top receiver was a priority as the Jets headed into free agency, especially after parting with Holmes. Decker emerged late last season, with a four-touchdown breakout at Kansas City on Dec. 1. Until then, the only starring role Decker enjoyed with the Broncos had come in his reality TVV show about his wedding to country and pop singer Jessie James.dddddddddddd He was in the final year of the contract he signed as a rookie four years ago with no extension in hand. He ended December with eight touchdowns for the Broncos, a triumph of sorts for a player who had contended with a balky shoulder and endless comparisons to teammates Thomas, Wes Welker and Julius Thomas. The slump-busting performance against the Chiefs did wonders for him as the Broncos advanced to the Super Bowl. Also Wednesday, the Jets agreed to terms with former Seattle Seahawks right tackle Breno Giacomini, quickly finding a replacement for Austin Howard. The Jets re-signed backup defensive lineman Leger Douzable to a one-year deal, too. Giacomini missed seven games with a knee injury last season for Seattle, but was back in time for the Seahawks run to their Super Bowl title against Denver. The 6-foot-7, 318-pound Giacomini will replace Howard, who signed with Oakland as a free agent after starting every game the last two seasons. Giacomini was a fifth-round pick in 2008 of Green Bay, where he spent three seasons before spending the last three with Seattle. Douzable signed with New York as a free agent last off-season and had 20 tackles and a career-high 1 1/2 sacks. The Jets earlier released cornerback Antonio Cromartie, clearing $17.75 million of salary cap space. New York could also save another $8.3 million if they cut quarterback Mark Sanchez, who missed last season with a shoulder injury. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / gs defence tandem that ma TORONTO – The Blue Jays play the rubber match of their three-game series with the Yankees on Sunday. With a win, Toronto (3-3) would head into its first off-day of the regular season above .500 and with the Astros coming to town for a three-game set starting Tuesday. KRATZS FIRST START Catcher Erik Kratz was looking forward to being behind the plate for Drew Hutchisons start on Sunday afternoon. “I like his demeanour,” said Kratz. “I like how he goes after hitters and hes not afraid of contact. Hes going to go right after these guys and Im excited about it.” Its been a whirlwind couple of weeks for Kratz. Acquired from Philadelphia in the offseason, along with pitcher Rob Rasmussen, it was assumed Kratz would have the inside track to be Dioner Navarros backup because hes an offensive threat. Kratz lost the job to Josh Thole, who has a lengthy track record catching knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, but was recalled in time for opening day when Casey Janssen went on the disabled list. “Theyve been up and down for sure,” said Kratz. “When I got sent down I was disappointed but when I got called back up obviously youre excited again. Its something that, its part of the game, its part of where Im at in my career.” He understands the business and knows there are limited opportunities to impress. But Kratz is familiar to the organization, the Blue Jays drafted him in 2002, and hes confident hes built up enough of a resume during his time in Philadelphia. He hit 18 home runs in 375 at-bats over the last two seasons. “I cant sit here and say, Oh man, this one at-bat that Im going to get off the bench is going to make or break my season,” said Kratz. “Its something that you do have to take advantage of your opportunities. Ive been fortunate to have opportunities in the big leagues so Ive put together a little bit of a resume.” Should he be called upon to catch Dickey this season, Kratz has confidence in his ability to receive the knuckleball. “Its as good as its been,” said Kratz. “I think he said it right and he knows the pitch the best. I definitely improved. Is there room for more improvement? Absolutely. I think its something that, getting that comfort level out in those games, lights are a little brighter than in spring training. Just the more reps I can get the more comfortable Ill get.” WALDEN “SHOCKED” AT CALL-UP Needless to say Marcus Walden was surprised when his contract was purchased from Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday. “I was definitely shocked,” said Walden. “I saw that they were calling up Chad Jenkins. I didnt hear of a 10-day rule, I had no knowledge of it, so my skipper called me in and I was shocked. Really shocked.” The 10-day rule to which Walden is referring applies to players optioned to the minor leagues. Players on option already are on the 40-man roster and if theyre sent to the minor leagues, they must spend 10 regular season days on option before theyre eligible to be recalled. The lone exception is to be an injury replacement when someone on the big league roster is placed on the disabled list. The Blue Jays intended to recall Chad Jenkins but, because hes on option, he isnt eligible for call up until April 10, the 11th day of the regular season. Walden wasnt on the 40-man roster, hence his contract being “purchased,” and so he was selected as Jeremy Jeffress replacement when Jeffress was designated for assignment. Walden, 25, is a sinkerball pitcher who relies on ground ball outs. His career minor league strikeout rate of 5.4 per nine innings reflects his approach. He missed most of 2009 and all of 2010 after undergoing Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. Walden made a number of adjustments to his training regimen as a result. “Ever since then Ive kind of changed a lot of stuff about working out and doing a lot of things to get myself ready to pitch,” said Walden. “At the end of the day I think its paid off.” Walden swears by yoga; he estimates he participated in 40 to 50 sessions in the offseason. Hes considered one of the strongest players in the Blue Jays organization and he credits yoga. “I think its something, it kind of gets people to be more limber and more flexible,” said Walden. “If youve got really big, strong, tight muscles it does you no good. The more limber you are, the more flexibility you can have, the looser your muscles are to help with not having injuries.” ,b>POSITIVE SIGN For the first time in franchise history, the Blue Jays first three wins of a season have come with the club scoring fewer than four runs in each of the victories. The starting pitching, with the benefit of improved defence, is off to a much better start than last year. Its early but the Blue Jays 3.78 starting staff ERA has the team on track to vastly improve on last seasons 4.81 ERA amongst starters, which ranked second worst in baseball. HABS HEADED TO CONFERENCE FINAL The Montreal Canadiens scored early in Game Seven, built a lead and protected it well on their way to a 3-1 series-clinching win over the Boston Bruins. While this game or series isnt necessarily a referendum on the value of fourth lines, the Canadiens certainly benefitted from production lower down their forward depth chart. In Game Seven, the scoring was opened by Dale Weise, who has been a nice surprise for the Canadiens, contributing three goals and five points in 11 playoff games. The last goal of the game came from Daniel Briere, and while it was a power play goal, Briere did centre the fourth line (with Weise and Brandon Prust) and his two-point effort in Game Seven left Briere with six points in 10 playoff games. With two points in Game Seven, Briere moves past Sidney Crosby for fifth place among active playoff scorers. No Canadiens forwards have averaged less time on ice in this postseason than Briere and Wiese, but their contributions cant be ignored. Canadiens RW Brendan Gallagher had two assists in Game Seven, giving him nine points in the postseason, tied with Lars Eller for most points among Montreal forwards. Another depth player that made a useful contribution for Montreal was rookie D Nathan Beaulieu, the rookie who replaced Douglas Murray in the lineup and while he hasnt played much, hes been effective. In Games Six and Seven, Beaulieu had two assists and was on for 63.8% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts when he was on the ice. Michel Therrien thinks Murray is hard to play against? Beaulieus harder. The supporting cast was valuable for the Habs, but so too was their franchise goaltender. Carey Price stopped 219 of 234 shots he faced in the series (.936 SV%), outdueling his Boston counterpart, Tuukka Rask, who stopped 177 of 196 shots (.903 SV%). Its not as though Rask let in glaring bad goals — Brieres goal in Game Seven was banked in off Zdeno Charas skate — but Price stopped more pucks and, in a series this close, that made the difference. While RW Jarome Iginla scored Bostons only goal, that didnt erase the trouble that Bostons first line experienced in the postseason. David Krejci, who far-and-away, had more playoff points than anyone in the past three postseasons, finished this years playoffs with no goals and four assists in a dozen games. LW Milan Lucic had points in the first three games of the series against Montreal, but was held off the scoresheet in the last four games, registering two shots on goal, total, in the final three games. Iginla did lead the Bruins with five goals in the playoffs, but seven points in a dozen playoff games is hardly earth-shattering production. Such is the nature of an upset in the playoffs, though. The lower-seeded Canadiens got better goaltendingg, some unexpected production from players on the low-end of the depth chart and that was enough to overcome a Bruins team that held a consistent territorial edge throughout the seven games.dddddddddddd This may result in some changes for the Bruins, but not likely anything drastic. They had the best record in the league this season and, while improvements are needed, they will be contenders again next year. As for the Canadiens, they are in their second Eastern Conference Final since 1993, when they last won the Stanley Cup. That season, the Canadiens had a fortunate path once the New York Islanders eliminated the Cup-favourite Pittsburgh Penguins. This time, the Habs bounced the top seed and take on a New York Rangers team that may be favoured, but not by much, making for what should be a competitive series. KINGS AND DUCKS GOING SEVEN With their season the line, the Los Angeles Kings locked down against the Anaheim Ducks, taking a 2-1 decision in Game Six to force a seventh game in the Freeway Series. While the final shot count in the game barely favoured the Kings, 23-22, they dominated at score close, with nearly two-thirds of the 5-on-5 shot attempts and not one Kings player was on the ice for less than 50% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. The winning goal in Game Six was scored by Kings RW Trevor Lewis. Soft as it may have been (a wrist shot from the top of the circles), Lewis now has four goals in 13 playoff games after scoring six goals in 73 regular season games. In the past four games, Lewis has been on the ice for 65.4% of the shot attempts when hes on the ice at 5-on-5. More contribution from unexpected sources. Los Angeles first goal came from D Jake Muzzin, his third of the playoffs and Game Six was the second straight game in which he played more than 25 minutes in regulation. In the past three games, Muzzin has been on the ice for 74 of 108 (68.5%) of shot attempts at 5-on-5. It wasnt all unheralded performers getting the job done for the Kings, though. C Anze Kopitar had an assist, to give him a playoff-leading 17 points. On the other side, Game Six was the first game in the series in which Ducks C Ryan Getzlaf didnt register a point; it was also the first time in the playoffs that Getzlaf didnt register a shot on goal. That probably means some credit is due to the Kings defence tandem that matched up against Getzlaf, so, take a bow, Jeff Schultz and Slava Voynov. Schultz, who spent the entire season in the AHL, isnt exactly driving play, but has been on the ice for more than 55% of the shot attempts at 5-on-5 in five games since being inserted into the lineup. Lewis questionable goal aside, its not as though the Kings found a great secret to beating Ducks G John Gibson, who has still stopped 86 of 92 shots (.935 SV%) in three games against the Kings but, with the Kings season on the line, two goals was enough to force Game Seven. Téma: Jak postupovat / t an easy win even though Matt Forte an MANCHESTER, England – Rio Ferdinand brought his trophy-filled, 12-year stay at Manchester United to an end on Monday by announcing he would be leaving Old Trafford to continue his playing career. The 35-year-old Ferdinand, who became Englands most expensive player when he joined United from Leeds for 29.1 million pounds in 2002, has not been offered an extension to his contract that expires next month. He suggested, however, that his departure was on his own terms, saying in a statement: “I have thought long and hard over the last few months about my future, and after 12 fantastic years playing, for what I regard, as the best club in the world, I have decided the time is right for me to move on.” A tall, elegant, ball-playing defender, Ferdinand made 454 appearances for United — his last coming in the 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday in the final match of the season. He had been marginalized by the club this season, making just 14 appearances. Ferdinand won six league titles, two League Cups, one Champions League and a Club World Cup with United and forged one of Premier Leagues great centre-back partnerships with Nemanja Vidic, who will also leave this summer to join Inter Milan. With left back Patrice Evra soon out of contract, too, whoever comes in as the full-time replacement for fired United manager David Moyes faces a huge task to rebuild the defence. Ferdinand has had injury problems in recent years — particularly with his back — and has been following a strict training regime to extend his career, but he signalled he is not ready to retire. “I am feeling fit and healthy, ready for a new challenge and looking forward to whatever the future holds for me,” he added in the statement. While Vidic was afforded an emotional farewell at Old Trafford in his final home match, receiving a memento from club great Bobby Charlton before last weeks Premier League game against Hull and a rousing ovation from Uniteds fans, Ferdinand will leave without any ceremony. Sections of the British media reported Monday that Ferdinand was told in the dressing room after the Southampton match that he wouldnt be offered a new deal. “Circumstances didnt allow for me to say goodbye the way I would have liked,” he added in the statement, “but Id like to take this opportunity to thank my teammates, staff, the club and the fans for an unbelievable 12 years that Ill never forget. Winning trophies I dreamed about as a kid came true at this great club.” The low point of his spell at United undoubtedly came in 2003 when he was banned for eight months after being found guilty of missing a drugs test. But he will be remembered by United fans as one of Alex Fergusons best defensive purchases, despite his hefty price tag, with Ferdinand breaking the mould for English centre backs with his touch, athleticism and ability to play the ball out of the back. CHICAGO — The Chicago Bears understand where they were and can appreciate how far theyve come. Charles Tillman and Major Wright returned interceptions for touchdowns early in the third quarter, and Chicago picked off Matthew Stafford four times to beat the Detroit Lions 37-13 in a heated game on Sunday. “Were getting better,” Brian Urlacher said. “No doubt about that. Were not done yet. Weve still got a long way to go. But were going the right direction, thats for sure.” Beating Detroit was another big step. The four interceptions by Stafford matched his season total entering the game and helped knock the Lions (6-3) into a second-place tie with the Bears in the NFC North. Stafford was also involved in a skirmish that led to an ejection of Chicagos D.J. Moore early in the fourth quarter. By then, the Bears (6-3) had locked up their fourth straight win thanks to a dominant defence and another punt return for a touchdown by Devin Hester, who ran one back 82 yards. That extended his NFL record for punt-return TDs to 12 and combined kick-return touchdowns to 17. Julius Peppers and Tim Jennings forced turnovers on Detroits first two possessions, leading to a touchdown and field goal by Chicago. Wright and Tillman returned interceptions for touchdowns on the Lions first two possessions of the second half to put game out of reach. In between turnover binges, Hester caused his usual havoc before leaving with an undisclosed illness. For a guy who was listed as questionable with a sprained left ankle, Hester sure looked good while he was in the game. He had already set up a field goal by Robbie Gould in the opening seconds of the second quarter with a 29-yard punt return before his long TD return along the left sideline, giving the Bears a 20-0 lead. The idea that the Bears would be tied with the Lions seemed far-fetched after their 24-13 Monday night loss at Ford Field last month, but the teams have gone in different directions since. “We had a lot riding on this game,” Smith said. “NFC division game at home we just couldnt afford another loss. Weve gotten better and better each week.” Detroit has dropped three of four after winning its first five, and this one was brutal — particularly for Stafford and Calvin Johnson. Johnson had 81 yards on seven catches with Tillman locking him down. Stafford, playing with a fractured finger in his right hand, completed 33 of 63 passes for 329 yards, and any shot the Lions had at aa comeback ended when Wright and Tillman picked him off early in the third.dddddddddddd Wright returned his interception 24 yards and Tillman ran his back 44 yards for TDs that made it 34-6, sending the Lions to their first road loss after they won their first four away from Ford Field. Stafford said the finger wasnt really a factor, but the strong wind was. “Wind was blowing the ball around, and they had a tough time throwing it and we had a tough time throwing it,” he said. Things really got chippy early in the fourth quarter after Stafford threw his third interception. Jennings picked him off and got shoved hard out of bounds by Nate Burleson. While that unfolded, Stafford grabbed Moore by the helmet and threw him to the ground, setting off a confrontation involving players from both teams that ultimately led to Moores ejection. “When you are going after my livelihood, my neck, and youre trying to hurt me, I just cant let that go,” Moore said. Stafford said he wasnt trying to injure Moore. “He kind of blocked me and I was just trying to get him off me best I knew how,” Stafford said. “And I guess he didnt like the way I did it. He wanted to ask me about it.” There was also some tension earlier in the game. Jay Cutler had his helmet ripped off by Ndamukong Suh after a run, and he got slammed to the ground by Nick Fairley on a late hit in the third quarter. And a few plays before Jennings interception, Chicagos Lance Briggs had a hard hit on Johnson. “It wasnt clean and it wasnt quiet,” Cutler said. “I know that. Thats just how it is.” Those incidents aside, there was little drama in this one. The Bears pulled out an easy win even though Matt Forte and Cutler did not have big games. Forte scored the games first touchdown on a six-yard run but finished with 64 yards — 40 of them on one run. Cutler was consistently under pressure while throwing for 123 yards, but for one game it didnt matter. Notes: Smith said LG Chris Williams was undergoing surgery Sunday after leaving the game with a wrist injury. … Tillman tied Mike Brown and Bennie McRae for the club record with his fourth career interception return for a touchdown. He has 28 interceptions and ranks fourth on the Bears all-time list. … Peppers had an 11-yard sack on third down at the six that forced Detroit to kick a field goal in the second quarter. … The Lions had won six straight road games dating back to last season. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / years ago, was down 0 TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays dug themselves a massive hole, then almost managed to climb out Saturday against the Boston Red Sox. But when it was all over they had wasted another lead, seen another pitcher flame out on the mound and lost their fourth straight at home. After roughing up Clay Buchholz for three runs in the first inning, Toronto (11-13) found itself behind 6-3 after three innings as starter Brandon Morrow literally lost control. A late comeback by the Jays fell short as Boston (12-13) hung on for a 7-6 win. Morrow (1-2) walked a career-high eight of the 14 batters he faced before being pulled after 2 2/3 shocking innings before an announced crowd of 40,322 under the roof at the Rogers Centre. “Its not a good feeling when you can take the blame for the game and put it squarely on your shoulders,” said Morrow, who made no excuses as he threw himself on his sword. “I came in with one goal and that was to pitch late in the game and keep us in it. I let down the team in a big way today.” Twice he was rescued by double plays before the bottom fell out in a six-run Boston third that saw Toronto pitching coach Pete Walker ejected for back-chat to home-plate umpire Jeff Kellogg. “Its embarrassing to not be able to command your fastball,” said Morrow, who said physically he was fine. “I had decent command of the other stuff.” The first walk of the afternoon, to Red Sox leadoff batter Dustin Pedroia, was the 100th Jays free pass this season. Toronto pitchers issued nine walks on the day, with David Ortiz the recipient of three. “Weve been walking way too many guys all year,” said manager John Gibbons. “Thats unlike us. Weve got some strike-throwers.” A.J. Pierzynski hit his eighth career grand slam to power the Red Sox offence before Toronto staged a nail-biting late comeback. Téma: Jak postupovat / tar Bryan Chiu as ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – The NFLs officiating chief has cleared Broncos receiver Wes Welker of any wrongdoing for his hit that knocked Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib out of Sundays AFC Championship. “It was a legal hit,” Vice-President of Officiating Dean Blandino said on the NFL Network on Wednesday night. On Monday, New England coach Bill Belichick blasted Welker for the hit, calling it “one of the worst plays” hed seen in nearly four decades of coaching. Without mentioning his former player by name, Belichick said it “was a deliberate play by the receiver to take out Aqib, no attempt to get open.” He added, “Ill let the league handle the discipline on that play.” There will be no discipline for Welker; Blandino said there was simply no infraction of the rules. Welker, coming from the right, collided with Talib, who was running from the left to stay with his receiver, a split-second before Peyton Mannings pass went off the hands of receiver Demaryius Thomas a few yards away in the first quarter Sunday. No flag was thrown. Talib left the game with a knee injury and didnt return, and Manning threw for 400 yards in Denvers 26-16 win that sent the top-seeded Broncos to the Super Bowl. “The first potential foul would be for offensive pass interference; a receiver cant block downfield before the ball is touched, so the timing is important,” Blandino said on his weekly appearance on the NFL Network. He noted that as “contact occurs, the ball is touched almost simultaneously. We dont have a foul for pass interference.” “The other thing, is it unnecessary roughness? Under the current rules it isnt,” Blandino said. “Its not late; Talib wasnt out of the play.” Given that an injury occurred, Blandino said he expects the leagues competition committee to examine the play in the off-season “and determine if there needs to be a change. But under the current rules, this is a legal play.” Welker, who had a cool relationship with Belichick before leaving New England as a free agent last off-season, hasnt been available for comment this week as the Broncos wont practice until Thursday. But after the game, Welker said, “it was one of those plays where its kind of a rub play and I was trying to get him to go over the top, and I think he was thinking the same thing and wanted to come underneath and we just kind of collided. … It wasnt a deal where I was trying to hit him or anything like that.” Broncos coach John Fox responded to Belichicks stinging criticism on Monday by saying Welker is a “a great player, high integrity. I can say that we were not doing anything with intent.” At 5-foot-9 and 185 pounds, Welker is 4 inches shorter and 20 pounds lighter than Talib. Hes also wearing a special helmet to guard against further head injury after missing the final month of the season with his second concussion. Hes also never been known as a dirty player. Patriots safety Steve Gregory said he didnt think Welker would deliberately try to hurt a player, saying, “I dont think anybody plays that way, especially at this level of football with two great football teams in the Broncos and ourselves.” Blandino said he has spoken with Belichick this week about the play “and obviously there is a difference of opinion there and something that well continue to look at during the off-season.” ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org ___ Follow AP Pro Football Writer Arnie Melendrez Stapleton on Twitter: http://twitter.com/arniestapleton [url=http://www.officialbrowns.us.com/Brown-Jim-Brow… Jim Brown Mens Authentic Jersey Mitchell and Ness[/url] . Chiu spent his entire 13-year CFL career as a centre with the Montreal Alouettes. He was named a CFL all-star seven times, the leagues outstanding lineman in 2002, and helped the Alouettes earn Grey Cup titles in 2002 and 2009. The Vancouver native retired as a Grey Cup champion before the 2010 season. “I am very excited that Bryan Chiu was available to join our staff,” Argos head coach Scott Milanovich said in a statement. “Bryan is a competitor whose 13 years of playing experience and winning approach will provve invaluable to our offensive line.dddddddddddd” Chiu was most recently a member of the Concordia Stingers coaching staff, serving as offensive line coach and assistant offensive co-ordinator. “I am thrilled for the opportunity to come to Toronto and work with the entire coaching staff, especially Scott Milanovich and (GM) Jim Barker,” Chiu said. “These two men were each, at different times, instrumental in the Grey Cup championship teams I was part of as a player. I want to thank the Argonauts organization for believing in me and I look forward to meeting the players and getting to work.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / minal complaint against b The Professor Ricky Ray has been putting on a clinic just about every time hes been on the field in 2013. Im loving watching this guy go out there and nonchalantly dismantle defence after defence and effortlessly complete ball after ball after ball. Rays unmatched accuracy (77.2 percent completion rate and 21 touchdown passes to only two interceptions in 2013) is extremely rare. Ive called many of his games when hes torching defences and I cant emphasize it enough for fans to take notice and enjoy it while they can. Quarterbacks like Ray come around but every half century or so…rare indeed! Whats giving this pulse-less and pure passing quarterback a chance to succeed even more than usual is he is matched with a coach, Scott Milanovich, that gets it; he himself having been there before. Its like the perfect storm: a head coach that has played the position before equipped with a tremendous offensive scheme coupled with, in my opinion, the most accurate pure passer the CFL has ever seen!Know this, when you are on top of your game as a quarterback, theres nothing a defence can show you, throw at you, or do to you that you dont have an answer for offensively. Its a state or level we all try to achieve and get to. When you do, or if you do, you just hope that your physical skills are still at a premium level so you can maximize the knowledge you have. Thats when you are hitting on all cylinders and truly a general on the field of play. I try and explain it to people like this: when you are in that zone I just described, you are connecting all the dots before the ball is even snapped, meaning you already know where you are going with the football before the play starts. The formation, pre-snap motion, positioning of each and every defender and their reactions only verify what you already know. Its now just getting the ball in your hands and using your eyes in order to expand a hole for a receiver or move a defender just a bit more, and then you plant your back foot and – with great confidence, timing, and accuracy – you trust your eyes and pull the trigger! Ray does this more consistently than anyone else in the league, period! The video tells you as much, just about every play hes on the field; like the old saying goes, “The eye in the sky never lies.” You can see the prior preparation coming into play: the experience, the talent, and the recognition. When it does, now you are throwing with confidence and spotting the football. Pitching and catching! Another guy that comes to mind that is pure and as prepared as Ray is a guy named Peyton Manning. You see him connect the dots dont you? Well thats what Ray is doing, and hes doing it with only 20 seconds every play or half the time Manning gets! Impressive, I know! Now Im not saying that hes unstoppable, Im just telling you hes extremely rare. My good friend and colleague Gord Miller once told me, “Having a good quarterback does not guarantee that you are going to win, but not having one guarantees you wont.” Enjoy folks, because this guy is special and hes in that ZONE. The Argos have developed a really nice alternative to the three-time Grey Cup winner in Zach Collaros. Zach has showed us all that there are several ways to be successful at quarterback. Young, talented and extremely mobile are just a few of his positive attributes. Two other strengths are his creativity when the initial structure of a play breaks down and his resilience. You think this guys down and out and he gets up off the canvas and starts to dominate and find a way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The quarterbacking carousel and talent pool does not stop there for the Argonauts. We have had a chance to see Trevor Harris a little this season and got a glimpse of Mitchell Gale as well. Both these young quarterbacks have the skill set to be successful in this league. Their hurdles and struggles are finding the opportunity to prove it. The Eastern Final between the Argos and Hamilton Tiger-Cats is surprisingly rare. In fact, its the first time since 1986. But thats not as rare as the Argos Ricky Ray. Go down to the Rogers Centre this Sunday, buy a ticket and watch this guy connect the dots! Téma: Jak postupovat / Record I think I picked Ch CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders refuse to let a few injuries to key players dampen their enthusiasm heading into the CFL playoffs. Calgary finished atop the CFL standings with a 14-4 record and earned the right to host the West Division final at McMahon Stadium on Nov. 17 against either the Saskatchewan Roughriders or the B.C. Lions. In their final game of the regular season in Vancouver last Friday, the Stamps suffered a 26-7 setback to the Lions and also lost the services of three starters due to injury in the first half. Defensive linemen Micah Johnson and Demonte Bolden both injured knee ligaments and receiver Marquay McDaniel sustained a high ankle sprain. With all three deemed unable to play in the West Final, the Stamps will count on other players to step up in their absence. “Thats been our mindset all year,” said defensive tackle Junior Turner. “Guys have gone down and out and guys have filled in.” Running back Jon Cornish, who was one of 10 Calgary players named to the CFLs West Division all-star team on Wednesday, said that dealing with injuries is nothing new for the Stamps. “Were a team that played through all kinds of injuries last year and we came into this season virtually the same team,” said Cornish, who missed one game in the regular season with a thigh contusion. “We understood that people get hurt playing football, so I dont ever think that we need to do any rallying. The next guy up did what they needed to do and they understood that they either did it right or theyre off the team.” Calgary coach John Hufnagel said that Turner and Etienne Legare will be counted upon to anchor Calgarys defensive line up the middle, while hell also consider activating Earl Okine and/or Oren Wilson from the practice roster. “We brought Mr. Wilson in to see what he can provide for us,” Hufnagel said. “Earl Okines been here for a couple, three, four weeks. With Etienne Legare and Junior Turner we have enough men to fill the holes.” Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing in at 286 pounds, Okine appears to have the physical stature to make an impact on defence for the Stamps. “The CFL is a tough game and absolutely its a very fast-paced athletic game and it takes a lot of adjustment, but Ive been here,” said Okine, while adding that hes been waiting patiently for his opportunity. “Ive been working very hard in practice, getting in with my defensive line, working very hard every day after practice and before practice.” The Stamps received some good news on Wednesday as Joe West returned to the practice field after missing the past three games with a shoulder injury, while fellow receiver Brad Sinopoli is close to making his return from a concussion he sustained on Oct. 18 in Edmonton during Calgarys 27-13 win over the Eskimos. “Brad Sinopoli was back on the practice field doing a bit of individual work,” Hufnagel said. “Hell do a little bit of contact work (Thursday), but everything looks like hell be able to make the game, so well adjust accordingly with the players that we have.” While the Stamps have suffered their fair share of injuries, quarterback Kevin Glenn said that theyve had enough depth to plug those holes with capable replacements. “It just seems like when a guy does go down, its another guy thats coming back off of injury just to fill that spot,” Glenn said. “You dont ever want to see that kind of stuff happen, but it just seems like for us its been happening at the right time that weve been losing a guy, but getting a guy back too.” In the case of receiver Jeff Fuller, the Stamps benefited from a player who took advantage of making the most of his opportunity when it was given to him. Fuller signed with the Stamps on Sept. 14 and then spent four weeks on the practice roster before making four catches for 75 yards in his CFL debut on Oct. 18 against the Eskimos. “A guy coming in so late like that and actually playing very well at the end of the year has been another help,” Glenn said. Fuller followed up his impressive debut by making six catches for a team-leading 113 yards during a 29-25 win at home over the Riders on Oct. 26 before hauling in five passes for 66 yards in the season finale against the Lions. “Im definitely extremely excited about this next game coming up,” Fuller said. “Its opportunities for other players to come in and make plays and make a run at this Grey Cup. Im here now and Im loving every minute of it and feel myself getting better. Its just a blessing to be a part of such a great program.” Thanks to their performance in the regular season, the Stamps have the benefit of an extra week to prepare to host the West Final. “Its unique, its beneficial and its welcoming,” Hufnagel said. “Thats why you work so hard during the regular season to try to finish first so you do have a bye week.” [url=http://www.officialjets.us.com/Black-Jeff-Cumbe… Cumberland[/url] . The Browns have relaxed their media limitations to see rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel practice.Did you think that the Swedish game was tailored against your skillset? Actually I was surprised how they played over there. It was a lot of trap hockey, it was pretty tight checking, I thought it would be a lot more wide open with dangling. Id say the rules were not as suited towards me, as they dont allow big body checks, youll get a penalty for roughing or boarding if you hit a guy too hard, so theres a little big of an adjustment there. I was more surprised how they played over there than the dangling Russian style I kind of pictured. Was there any culture shock going over? Yeah, definitely. I think day-to-day life away from the rink, and even at the rink, your schedule with practice, the game day set up that theyve been doing there for years, its all totally different – even practice days – I hadnt done some of the drills before. It was free-flowing big big ice drills with lots of turning. But I brought my family and my kids over there, so getting used to how things operate, how restaurants work, how every little thing you are used to here is kind of different. Did your family enjoy being there? Yeah I think they did. We had our baby like two weeks before wed gone over there so that was not good [laughs] for the wife off the start. It turned out she had a really good time though and our family enjoyed it. My kid was in preschool and learned a little bit of Swedish, a young kid takes everything in well, so it ended up being a good family experience. Happy to be back in Canada? Yeah, very happy. Your Twitter handle @Armdog has over 163k followers, do you like interacting with people on Twitter? I love Twitter actually. My wife gives me a hard time because Im on there all the time, but I love checking it out for my own personal news pick ups and things that Im interested in following, and hockey and other people in general. I also like the fan interaction, I like getting @ mentions, its pretty fun, its like somebody has my phone number but they dont have my phone number, like I could send you a text message and youll see it. What was it like playing for both sides of the Toronto/Montreal rivalry? It was great. I dont know how many times Ive said it but I feel very lucky to have played on both organizations, it was two great experiences. It was awesome living in both cities. It was great for my family, people were friendly, both cities were awesome. Putting on those jerseys was something special, it was something else. Did you have any preference? I know you were a Montreal Canadiens fan growing up. Yeah, I grew up as a Habs fan so Id probably say that hit home for me a lot more. Growing up being a Habs fan, I was in thhe Montreal Canadiens fan club as a kid, which I think had a five-dollar entry fee [laughs] you would get a pendant that says youre a part of the fan club, which had up on my wall, but to get to put on that jersey after being a fan as a kid was like a dream come true.dddddddddddd I wish it hadnt been during a lockout year, it was something to remember. Now that youve had time to reflect, what do you think of this video? Oh did you like that [laughs]? It was certainly something else. That was McLovin [as Maxime Talbot is on the screen]. You know what, that was put on Jay Leno as like the worst car commercial hes ever seen. I was sleeping and we had a game the next day and I was in bed and my wifes parents were visiting and they came upstairs and were like “oh my gosh, you were just on Jay Lenos worst car commercial,” and I immediately felt myself sweating and getting red and embarrassed because thats pretty big time you know. I was just like “oh my God,” because I knew it was pretty cheesy and bad when we did it, but its something fun, its kind of a YouTube sensation. Did you ever think it would blow up like it did? No, not off the start, I guess it kind of fizzled out now, but people still talk about it or bring it up on Twitter especially. It still kind of lingers around but it did kind of take off at the start which I think what the company was hoping for [laughs]. Changing topics, who do you have for the Stanley Cup this year? I hope my buddies in Montreal can pull off the series and get to the finals, but I think Chicago/LA are pretty strong. I think yesterday on Off The Record I think I picked Chicago in the series, but I dont know, I think L.A is just built for playoff series, I think theyll probably win. When somebody asks, who is the best playing in the NHL? You say.. There are so many guys that are different players. I dont think you can question what Toews have done for his teams that hes played on. I remember him when he was 18 or 19, and he just carried his World Junior team to Gold and played with us as a young guy at the World Championships as a young guy and was a big part of the team at a young age. That guys just got it. Crosby or Toews, just with their resumes, what theyve done with their teams in their careers is just incredible. Can you go bar down? I can go cheddar down mostly [laughs]. Finally, whats next for Colby Armstrong? Just a summer of training and getting ready. Hopefully find a job over here that could take off and make me happy. Thats what Im looking to do. Youll have to keep your eyes on me and see where I land or see if I could get anything. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / his week. "It woul HALIFAX – Saint Marys University says it has suspended six members of its football team for allegedly tweeting messages of hate, racism and sexual violence. The move comes after an online publication produced by students at the University of Kings College School of Journalism cited a number of tweets from accounts it said belonged to members of the football team. A spokesman for Saint Marys University said Monday that officials have spoken to the football players and are trying to confirm if they sent the tweets as reported in UNews. Steve Proctor said if a player denies he sent the tweet, the university will conduct an investigation. “Weve told them they are suspended,” Proctor said. “If theyre denying that its their posting, then well go back and well say, Lets look and see what the evidence is.” Proctor said the university may also decide to impose further academic discipline. David Gauthier, the universitys academic and research vice-president, said in a news release the tweets arent consistent with the schools values, calling them “completely inappropriate and unacceptable.” One of the tweets quoted by UNews said: “to that b**ch that bit me last night. Hope your dead in a ditch. you are scum.” Another tweet included an offensive term for gays. The university attracted national attention last September over a student-led chant that glorified sex with underage girls. In December, the university endorsed a report from an independent council that contained 20 recommendations on cultural changes to prevent sexual violence and inspire respectful behaviour and a safe learning environment at the school. PAUL, Minn.SAINT JOHN, N.B. — Canadas Rachel Homan opened the Ford Womens World Curling Championship with a 7-5 win over Russia on Saturday. The skip and her teammates know properly managing sleep, diet, stress and downtime for another eight days will keep those wins coming. Homan, third Emma Miskew and front end Alison Kreviazuk and Lisa Weagle have played in enough national and international events to know their off-ice schedule impacts the on-ice performance, particularly in the important games at the end of the tournament. The Canadians will sleep as much as they can and eat at pre-scouted establishments that serve healthy food. When they need to mentally “check out”, the Ottawa Curling Club foursome will play cards or “Heads Up”, which is a game app popularized by Ellen DeGeneres. In short, winning a world title is a marathon and not a sprint. “We make sure were trying to keep it as loose as possible when were not on the ice because its pretty stressful out there wearing the Maple Leaf,” Homan said. “We want to be as stress-free as possible when were not playing.” For Homan, that means going to the gym a couple of times during the tournament. Miskew doesnt love napping, but she knows its important to lay down, put her feet up and close her eyes for awhile, particularly on a day when Canada plays morning and evening draws and not in the afternoon. Thats Canadas schedule Sunday when the host team faces the Czech Republic in the morning draw and the United States in the evening. Those days are the toughest when it comes to eating at the right time of the day. “The eating schedule is challenging because you eat in the morning, have a game and youre starving to eat a big lunch,” Miskew explains. “Youre not really hungry before your next game, but an end or two in youre starving. You almost have to force yourself to eat before the game so youre not dying during the game.” Canada had a kind opening-day schedule in Saint John with one game in the afternoon draw. Homan had hammer coming home with the score tied 5-5. She didnt have to throw her last stone because Russian skip Anna Sidorova was heavy with a draw. Latvias Evita Regza, South Koreas Ji-Sun Kim and Swedens Margaretha Sigfridsson also opened with wins, while Scotlands Kerry Barr, Denmarks Madeleine Dupont and Anna Kubeskova of the Czech Republic joined Russia at 0-1. Canadas average age is 25.5 and the Russians are even younger at 23.5. Sidorova, vice-skip Margarita Fomina and front end Alexandra Saitova and Ekaterina Galkina went 3-6 at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Sidorova, 25, is making her fifth straight appearance at a world championship and her third as a skip.dddddddddddd Russia was scheduled to arrive in Saint John on Thursday, but they were delayed until Friday because of winter storms that wreaked havoc on air travel midweek. The Canada-Russia opener wasnt a classic as both teams made mistakes. But when Canada made a costly error, Russia let them off the hook with one of their own. “I cant say were really tired,” Sidorova said. "Were ready to play. We still want to win. “We need to be much better than the others. Thats probably the goal this week and hopefully we will (be). The game was pretty tight, but in the end, they were just better than us.” Miskews shooting percentage was 90 per cent compared to Fominas 78. Homan outcurled Sidorova 89 to 66 per cent. Saitova at 78 per cent and Galkina at 91 outcurled Kreviazuk and Weagle both at 71. Kreviazuk missed shots in the fifth and seventh ends, but Russia handed momentum right back with lethal errors. Canada scored two points in those ends to lead 5-3. “Its the first game so youre not going to know the ice perfectly,” Homan said. “A couple of spots were learning and a few misses here and there, not because were throwing badly, just because were learning the ice.” Russia countered with two in the ninth to tie it up. Homans double takeout that end limited damage from Miskew miscue. Another double from the Canadian skip in the eighth erased Russias chance to score two and forced Sidorova to blank the end. Homan was pleased to start the tournament with a win in front of 2,848 at Harbour Station, which seats 6,000 for curling this week. “It wouldnt have been fun to lose that one with everyone coming out to cheer us on,” the 24-year-old Canadian skip said. “Im glad we got the win under our belts. Now weve got the night off to have some dinner with friends and family and re-group for tomorrow.” Homan and company won the bronze medal at last years world womens championship in Riga, Latvia. Their reward for a 13-0 record at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Montreal was a return trip to the world championship and in their own country this time. The Jennifer Jones team from Winnipeg went undefeated in Sochi to claim gold for Canada. Edmontons Kelsey Rocque won the world junior title earlier this month in Switzerland. Homan wants to continue the domination of Canadian women on the world stage. The last Canadian team to win a womens world curling title was Jones in 2008 in Vernon, B.C. Kelly Scott (2007) and Colleen Jones (2004) earned Canadas other world womens titles in the last decade. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / Said (PP10, 20-1), another AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — If the Detroit Pistons had played defence like this all season, their chances of making the playoffs might not look so remote. Josh Smith scored 24 points and Rodney Stuckey added 23, and the Pistons held Sacramento to 11 points in the third quarter in a 99-89 victory over the Kings on Tuesday night. “I thought our bigs were tremendous in pick-and-roll tonight,” Detroit interim coach John Loyer said. “But it was a team effort. The guys on the ball did a good job. We didnt give them easy looks.” Andre Drummond added 15 points and eight rebounds for Detroit, outscoring DeMarcus Cousins in a matchup of two of the NBAs top young big men. Cousins had 13 points and 14 rebounds but shot 5 of 15 from the field. Detroit trailed 54-52 at halftime, but outscored the Kings 20-11 in the third quarter. “I thought we lost that game in the third quarter,” Sacramento coach Michael Malone said. “We did not come out ready to play. We had some good looks, but did not knock them down.” Rudy Gay scored 20 points and Isaiah Thomas added 19 points and eight assists for Sacramento. The Pistons snapped a three-game losing streak and pulled to within three games of Atlanta for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. “We played with a sense of urgency,” Detroit guard Will Bynum said. “There are a couple of things we could do a little better, but this is definitely a building point.” The Pistons have shown little sign of a late-season run, but they put the Kings away with impressive starts to the third and fourth quarters. Detroit began the third on an 8-0 run thanks to a dunk by Drummond and 3-pointers by Smith and Brandon Jennings. An alley-oop from Smith to Drummond on the break made it 69-60. “Sometimes it isnt about numbers, its how you play,” Loyer said. “I thought it was one of Andres better games. I thought he did a much better job in the post. I thought his defence was good.” It was 72-65 after three, and Detroit started the fourth with six straight points. “Were concentrating on feeling more comfortable and were also trying to play for something,” Smith said. “I dont want to sit home in April and think about what I could have done.” The Pistons won despite a rough shooting night for their two point guards. Jennings and Will Bynum combined to go 5 of 24 — although they did finish with 13 assists between them. Cousins dunked on Drummond early in the game, giving the Kings a 12-6 lead, but the Pistons kept him under control for the most part. Drummond blocked a shot by Cousins out of bounds later in the first quarter. “We just make too many small mistakes during the game. Turnovers hurt us, and we didnt communicate on defence,” Cousins said. “Were making things too hard on ourselves. They came to play, and they made it tough for us, but we are hurting ourselves.” Greg Monroe, who was drafted two spots after Cousins in 2010, had six points and 12 rebounds for Detroit. The 31st edition of the worlds richest pacing event, showcasing the finest three-year-olds on the continent, will go postward at 10:14 p.m. and will be shown live on TSN. A half-hour preview of the race will air on TSN GO from 9:30-10:00 pm ET, with the race set for TSN from 10:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. ET. The winner will earn $500,000. Post positions were drawn today at Mohawk, with Toronto Maple Leafs forward Dave Bolland as the guest drawmaster. Last Saturday, three Cup eliminations were held to determine the field for the final. The three winners earned their connections the right to choose a post position before the balance of the field is drawn. Seventeen of the past 30 Cup winners also won their elimination. Trainer Jimmy Takter, more renowned as a trotting conditioner for such stars as Moni Maker, Kadabra and Malabar Man, but who also directed filly pacer See You At Peelers to championship seasons, has two Cup entrants, Lyonssomewhere and Tellitlikeitis, who both won their elims in ultra-impressive fashion, who both will be solidly backed on Saturday night and who were the first two horses to select a post position. The morning line favorite, at 3-1, is Tellitlikeitis (PP3), bred and owned by Lothlorien of Cheltenham, Ontario, who took his elim in a career best 1:48.4, blowing by heavily-favoured Hes Watching to win by two and one-quarter lengths in only his second start of the year. The regally bred son of 2009 Cup winner Well Said out of champion Kikikatie also won his season opener, a Pennsylvania Sires Stake, at Pocono Downs in May. Lothlorien has shared ownership of three previous Cup winners – Well Said (2009), Rocknroll Hanover (2005) and Red River Hanover (2002). Takter has only started two previous Cup entrants, both in 2012, and finished second with Time To Roll. Driver Brett Miller has two previous Cup drives, finishing second in 2010 with We Will See. “He has wicked speed and hell take you to where you want to go in the mile,” said Miller. “I definitely wanted to sit in with him this week (in the elim) and it worked out very well that the two horses I wanted to follow were in front of me.” Lyonssomewhere (PP4, 4-1), owned by Geoffrey Lyons Mound of Burford, Ontario is undefeated in five starts. The son of 2008 Cup winner and Horse of the Year Somebeachsomewhere took his elim comfortably in 1:50.1 by one and three-quarter lengths in his first stakes appearance. Hell be driven by Corey Callahan, making only his second Cup drive after finishing fourth with Mr Wiggles in 2009. “I like just about everything about him,” said Takter, after the race. “Tonight was his first stakes appearance and thats very rare and he responded. He beat some really good horses. Hes handy and hes the real deal. Its a long year and I wanted to have him fresh for this event and not too many starts.” Trainer Casie Coleman, who won the 2010 Cup with Sportswriter, sends out the 7-2 second choice Mcwicked (PP2), who recorded the fastest elim, winning by two lengths in 1:48.3. Owned by SSG Stables of North Boston, New York, Mcwicked, a son of 2002 Cup third place finisher Mcardle, is a five time winner in 14 outings with career earnings of $248,457. Driver Dave Miller has yet to win the Cup in 13 tries, but has twicce been second, including last year with a 96-1 shot, Twilight Bonfire.dddddddddddd. “He was absolutely awesome (in his elim),” said Coleman on Tuesday. "It was the fourth time Ive raced him and every time he keeps getting better and better. Ive been extremely impressed with him. He came out the elim great, hes sound, healthy, his blood is perfect. This horse, so far, knock on wood, hes given me no issues. “It looks like theres a lot of speed in the race. My horse can race either way. Id prefer him coming off a helmet but hes very versatile.” Hes Watching (PP7, 5-1), co-owned and trained by David Menary of Rockton, Ontario, finished second to Tellitlikeitis in his elim, but last year won all eight starts en route to a Dan Patch Award as the United States Trotting Associations top two-year-old colt pacer. Winner of a Somebeachsomewhere division on May 31 in a career best 1:49.3, the son of American Ideal will be driven by Tim Tetrick, who won the 2013 Cup with Captaintreacherous. “Im happy with (post) seven,” said Menary on Tuesday. "It could have been a lot worse. Well make the best of it. He can race any way. I dont think anybody is going to wire this field. (In the elim), our colt did a lot of work, a big second quarter, putting up big fractions, they raced the whole way. I think it was the toughest elim. “Last year, he did all he could do, two world records, six track records, every-sized track, every which way. Hes just a hulk of a little horse.” JK Endofanera (PP9, 10-1), trained by Ron Burke for owner-breeder 3 Brothers Stables of New York City, had a five-race win streak broken in his elim when finishing third as the 1-2 choice to Lyonssomewhere, while drifting out in the stretch. The son of Art Major is the fields leading money winner with $457,057, topped by his win last year in the Governors Cup at the Meadowlands. Hell be driven by Brian Sears, who steered Rocknroll Hanover to victory in the 2005 Cup. Last years Breeders Crown champion, Luck Be Withyou (PP8, 12-1), was third to Tellitlikeitis in his elim, after finishing second to JK Endofanera in a Somebeachsomewhere division the week before in his seasonal debut. Trained by 72-year-old Bill Cass, with his first Cup entrant, for owner John Craig of North York, the son of Western Ideal will be driven by Ron Pierce, who has won two Cups, with Total Truth in 2006 and Well Said in 2009. Lets Drink On It (PP5, 6-1), trained by Joe Seekman, is a seven-time winner in 16 starts and was third to Mcwicked in his elim. A son of Art Official, the only horse to defeat Somebeachsomewhere, hell be piloted by 21-year-old Tyler Smith, who would become the youngest driver to win the Pepsi North America Cup. Sometimes Said (PP10, 20-1), another son of 2009 Cup winner Well Said, finished second to Mcwicked last Saturday, the ninth time in 14 outings hes been the runner-up. Trained by Jim Campbell for owner Fashion Farms and driven by his Hall of Fame brother and record six-time Cup winner John Campbell, Sometimes Said was also second to Luck Be Withyou in last years Breeders Crown. Campbell last won the Cup in 1999 with The Panderosa. Beat The Drum (PP1, 20-1), a son of 2007 Cup winner Tell All, finished second as a 27-1 shot to Lyonssomewhere in his elim for trainer Staffan Lind. Yannick Gingras drives the three-time winner in 17 starts, the most outings by any Cup entrant this year. Completing the field is Ideal Cowboy (PP6, 15-1), who finished fourth to Mcwicked in his elim but drew into the final. A driver has not yet been confirmed for the son of American Ideal, who is trained by Paul Fraley of Anndrovette fame. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / provement by a forme SPARTA, Ky. — Brad Keselowski wont soon forget an eventful Saturday night in which the same right hand that held the winners trophy was soon bloodied and bandaged after he broke a champagne bottle celebrating. “We were playing around with some champagne and I told my good friend I should have stuck with beer,” Keselowski joked after receiving four stitches in the infield care centre. “We had too much fun with champagne and one of the bottles broke and I cut my hand open. Its no big deal.” Hell certainly remember the masterful performance that set those wild series of events in motion. Keselowski showed early and often that his No. 2 Ford was the best car at Kentucky Speedway, dominating the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race to become the tracks first repeat winner. The Penske Racing driver and 2012 race winner and Cup champion followed his record-breaking pole effort to lead 199 of 267 laps en route to his second victory of the season and 12th of his career. Keselowski won from the pole for the first time, pulling away after rallying from sixth on a restart to chase down and pass leader Kyle Busch on Lap 248. “I knew it was going to be a dogfight to get back to Kyle and then race him,” Keselowski said. “We got there with a really fast car and I hit the perfect run on him with traffic. Next thing I knew, we were there. It feels really good to get that second win.” Busch was second, followed by Ryan Newman, Matt Kenseth and Dale Earnhardt Jr., who rallied from a 29th-place start. A night after dominating the Nationwide Series race before finishing second to Kevin Harvick, partly because of a pit-road speeding penalty, Keselowski saved his heavy foot for the bumpy, rough track. The 2012 Cup champion went on to win by 1.014 seconds and post his ninth top-10 this season in moving one spot to fourth in the standings. Teammate Joey Logano started second and led 37 laps before a dropped cylinder left him ninth. Busch led 31 in a race that featured 12 lead changes — all but one featuring Penske drivers. “I felt like we were better than (Newman), but nowhere near as good as (Keselowski) or (Logano),” Busch said. “Those guys were really stout.” Keselowski, also the winner in Las Vegas, became the first driver this season with multiple victories on 1.5-mile tracks that make up much of the Chase for the Sprint Cup. The circuit wont see another such track until late August at Atlanta, and Keselowski made a case for being a favourite with arguably the most impressive run of his career. It followed his track-record qualifying speed of 188.791 mph and 138 laps led in the Nationwide race, which also featured a furious late run before settling for second to Harvick, who was seventh in the 400-mile race. This time he had enough laps to pass Busch. But the tone was set from the start, as Keselowski and Logano justified their front-row qualifying sweep with a vengeance. Keselowski wasted no time with that agenda, taking charge at the green flag and leading the first 78 laps before Logano took over for five laps. The two traded leads from there with nobody else to challenge them until Aric Almirolas wreck brought the sixth caution on Lap 213. That sent the leaders down pit road and scramble off produced the races first non-Penske leader in Busch, whose No. 18 took over on Lap 217 and led the restart with Newman second. The Penske duo needed just seven laps to draw a bead on both drivers and Keselowski was soon second and making a furious effort trying to chase down Busch, who had a 2-second lead at one point. Once Keselowski caught him in the backstretch, he again showed his Fords superiority. “Our car was awesome,” said Keselowski, who has led a series-high 346 laps in four starts at Kentucky. Earnhardt, Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart meanwhile overcame bad starting spots to finish in the top 11. Johnson was 10th after starting 25th and Stewart recovered from a 42nd-place start because of a transmission change for 11th. He had qualified 13th. “I would have liked to have been a little better than what we were there at the end,” Stewart said, “but I think we definitely had to fight our way up through the day. .. All in all I thought we had a pretty honest day there; cant complain about that.” Points leader Jeff Gordon finished sixth and leads Johnson and Earnhardt by 24. Téma: Jak postupovat / h hit the post, hit Ma GREEN BAY, Wis. – The brief scuffle at Packers practice turned heads in the crowd. The dropped ball by a receiver during an offence vs. defence security drill drew roars from defenders. The team has grinded through off-season workouts with a work ethic that coach Mike McCarthy says is one of the best hes seen during his nine years as head coach in Green Bay. The energy is up. “Im not saying the other groups werent mature,” McCarthy said. “It just seems like this group is further ahead than weve been, and you can sense the energy.” Caveat: Its June, still more than six weeks from the start of training camp and three months from the start of the 2014 season. Almost every team feels good this time of year. The Packers, of course, have a championship pedigree. Confidence that comes with winning three straight NFC North titles, and just a few seasons removed from winning the Super Bowl. “The work ethic is very high. This group is really extremely competitive, in tune. Our new training environment has been unbelievable. It has put us so far ahead of where weve ever been, so I think with that brings more confidence so theres just a sense of maturity,” McCarthy said. Changes on the coaching staff brought some new perspective. Quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo left to become the offensive co-ordinator of the New York Giants, while outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene left to spend more time with family. Sam Gash is the new running backs coach after Alex Van Pelt slid over to replace McAdoo. Winston Moss is the assistant in charge of all linebackers now, not just inside linebackers. Former Illinois and Florida head coach Ron Zook is now an assistant special teams coach. Green Bay hopes the defence will be improved this year with the addition of Julius Peppers and the anticipated healthy return of linebacker Clay Matthews from an injured thumb. Eddie Lacy has a full year of seasoning now as the lead rusher in a talented backfield that complements Rodgers. The 2011 NFL MVP, for one, likes the spunk hes seen on the practice field. “I love it. I love the energy, I love the passion. There will be those altercations in training camp. When guys remember this is a professional environment, not a personal environment, then you wont have any issues in the locker room,” Rodgers said. “But every now and then you have to stir it up a little bit, you have to make some changes.” Rodgers said he also likes the changes he has seen with new personnel and new coaches. “Its a natural progression. And when you have some new players theres always going to be stuff like that, guys getting used to this tempo,” Rodgers said. “Sometimes guys dont like getting tossed down a little bit, and you need to work it out.” Fringe players anxiously looking for a roster spot shouldnt get too overly worked up. Jobs arent won in June, McCarthy said, when practices are tailored to highlight agility and playing in space. But McCarthy likes some of the intangibles that he has seen so far. “I think youre seeing more player interaction as far as what goes on on the field. Guys self-correcting, and a lot more pro-active as far as sharing information,” he said. “Those are good things. I see more of it this year.” Note: The Packers signed rookie free agent Shaun Lewis on Tuesday. Lewis, a 5-foot-11 linebacker from Oklahoma State, tried out at Packers rookie minicamp in May. Téma: Jak postupovat / k they know they just have to SEATTLE – Jacob deGrom allowed five hits and a run in seven impressive innings, Lucas Duda hit a mammoth home run and the New York Mets beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1 Tuesday night. DeGrom (4-5) walked one and struck out seven to improve to 4-1 with a 1.59 ERA over his last six starts. Travis dArnaud drove in a run with a gift triple off Erasmo Ramirez (1-5), who was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma for the start, and scored on Ruben Tejadas soft single in the second inning to help New York end a three-game skid. Duda hit his 15th home run, a 446-foot drive off the second deck scoreboard in right field in the eighth. Jeurys Familia worked an easy eighth and Jenrry Mejia picked up the save — his 12th in 14 chances. Endy Chavez led off the bottom of the first with a single then deGrom retired the next 11 batters. With one out in the fifth, Willie Bloomquist broke through with a single to right. Dustin Ackley then doubled into the right-centre gap, scoring Bloomquist. Ackley advanced to third when Daniel Murphys relay to the plate sailed past the catcher but Ackley was left stranded. Ackley, who was 2 for 3, is hitting .377 in July after hitting just .214 in the first three months of the season. Ramirez went seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He walked two and matched his career high with 10 strikeouts. He also hit two batters. It is his fifth straight loss. He has not won since April 1. Over his previous four starts — all no-decisions — Ramirez had a 0.90 ERA with 14 strikeouts and 16 walks. Ramirez was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma before the game for his fourth stint with the big club. He likely will be sent back down after the game to make room for Wednesdays starter, Taijuan Walker. Duda gave the Mets a two-run cushion with his drive off the second-deck facade on a 3-1 pitch from Tom Wilhelmsen. NOTES: Walker was sent to Tacoma just before the All-Star break with an emphasis on working on his control. “I think hes better,” Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. “He has worked out some things down there, from a mechanical standpoint.” Another top prospect, LHP James Paxton, had a second rehab start for Tacoma Tuesday. He likely will get one more before a decision will be made on his status. . The Mariners, 53-47, have not had better than a .500 record after 100 games since they were 52-48 in 2009. . Chavez is 12 for 27 (.444) leading off. . Mets LHP Scott Rice, who made the big league roster last season after 14 years in the minors, will have elbow surgery Wednesday in New York to remove bone spurs in his left elbow. “For Scott, hes got to be very disappointed,” manager Terry Collins said. “He spent 15 years in the minor leagues, finally get to the bigs, have success then have it squashed like he has.” . I know what Olympics look like, so Im really ready to give everything that I can.” Abel leaves for her second Olympic Games on Monday. At 20 years old, It seems improbable that she could already be an Olympic veteran — at times Abel disbelieves it herself. But in 2008 at age 16, the Laval, Que., diver made her first Olympic team. It took a while to sink in. “Even when I was on the plane (to Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games) I was like, OK, somethings going to happen and they wont send me there. Im too young. Its impossible,” said Abel. Already focused on London 2012 at the time, Beijing was simply outside her radar.“It was so big for me. I said to myself, Your dream is going to come true four years earlier.”The first time Abel approached the Olympic diving board during a Beijing training session, she was a wreck. She caught a glimpse of the Olympic rings that wavered from the bottom of the pool, and her eyes welled up with tears.“I am going to be an Olympian at 16 years old,” she thought to herself, the fact suddenly hitting home.Thinking she suffered from nerves or cold feet, her teammates tried to offer comfort. But Abel was overwhelmed not with the pressure, but with joy and hope instead.“Maybe you can change your vision,” she realized. “Just think about whats going to happen in 2012 if you make the team. Maybe you can have a medal. Maybe you can make the final. Maybe you can be better than what you are right now, because you are still young.”Abel did make the Olympic diving team for London 2012, qualifying in the individual 3-metre springboard as well as the 3m synchro event with teammate Émilie Heymans. And there is no question that she is a better diver today than when she finished 13th four years ago in Beijing. Abels breakthrough year came in 2011. She earned two medals at the World Championships in Shanghai that year, and finished second overall in the international aquatics federations four-event World Series. Olympic bronze medallist Blythe Hartley competed with Abel at Beijing 2008. Now a diving analyst for CTVOlympics, she believes that Abels second Olympic appearance will be very different from her first. “This Olympics, she is a contender,” Hartley said. “On the world scene, everybody considers her a medal threat. She has the ability to do her dives better than anybody in the world and although its a strong competition and there are a lot of contenders in the field, absolutely Jennifer is [one of them].”But with success, Abels world has changed. A relative unknown ahead of her first Games, today Abel is inundated by media requests and appearances. She presented an award at the 2012 Juno Awards; she is a PwC Canada-sponsored athlete; as a featured athlete in the Canadian Olympic Committees “Give Your Everything” campaign, her face fills the television screen and stares back from bus and subway stops.“When youre a medal contender, there is a lot more pressure and expectation,” warned Hartley. “There aree more media demands, there are more elements to your Olympic training.dddddddddddd And to [Jennifer], I give her so much credit because shes handled that so seamlessly. She seems to really thrive in that environment and enjoy it. Shes very aware that she is a medal contender, and shes not hiding from that.”Abel appears comfortable on camera and has said she would like to work in television when her diving career comes to an end. Still, despite her calm exterior, she admits that she has felt the weight on her shoulders at times.“I was [at Beijing 2008] for experience, and now Im [on the team to] get a good result. Its completely different… I am a little bit nervous,” she told CTVOlympics.ca earlier this year.Abel chalks a rocky 2012 season up to those nerves. On the heels of her breakout 2011, she started the year with strength, capturing a silver medal in the synchronized event at Londons World Cup in February. Then things fell apart, and she dropped to fifth as an individual in World Series standings and fourth as a synchronized duo with Heymans. One dive in particular has been critical for Abel in both the individual and synchronized events this season. Her reverse 2.5 somersault in the pike position is third of five on her dive list, and she considers it her game making — or breaking — dive.“This is the one I can hit for nines, or the one that I can miss. So Im pretty sure that if this dive is going well, the rest of my dives are going to be good too,” she said.Hartley expects to see more hits than misses in London. Good divers have a special quality, she says, that enables them to pull off their best work when the stakes are highest. It is a trait that Abels veteran teammates, Heymans and Alexandre Despatie, have demonstrated time and again. Together, the two veterans have earned five Olympic medals throughout the past three Games. The is a trait that Abel is beginning to develop, too.“Ive seen it in action. I absolutely believe (that she has it already),” Hartley said, pointing Abels recent synchronized performances with Heymans as an example.“[Abel and Heymans] both thrive under adversity. Theyve had some less-than-ideal competitions this year, but they won a medal at World Cup and I think theyre feeling strong. They are such a strong team that I think they know they just have to continue to focus on training, and then it does come down to the five dives at the Olympics.”Abel and Heymans showed improvement late in the season, winning gold in commanding fashion at a spring Grand Prix event in Montreal. More impressive than the colour of the medal was their score — a season-high 323.40 points.“I would say [Émilie and I] are probably in the better position that weve been for the whole year,” Abel said of her final preparations ahead of the Games. “We are less nervous, we are having more fun, because now everything has been done. We are going officially to the Olympics, and were just doing our dives and getting closer to the perfect ten.”Watch Jennifer Abel and Émilie Heymans in the womens 3m synchronized springboard event on July 29, and again in the womens individual springboard beginning on August 3. ’ ’ ’ |

Even before leaving the batters box, Upton flashed a grin to Freddie Freeman, who also grinned as he waited on-deck. They seemed to know what was coming. Freemans single up the middle drove in Jason Heyward from second base in the 10th inning and the Atlanta Braves recovered from Craig Kimbrels blown save to beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 Friday night. Freeman said he savored the opportunity when the Cubs walked Upton. “It puts a smile on my face,” Freeman said. "I dont know if you saw on TV, but after the second, third and fourth pitches Justin and I were kind of just laughing at each other. It kind of fires you up, if youre not fired up already. “When they walk someone intentionally to get to you, it definitely lights a fire under your butt.” Chris Johnson, whose two-run single in the third inning gave Atlanta a 2-1 lead, said facing Freeman with the game on the line is a dangerous strategy. Freeman, who had three hits, is hitting .321. “I think Freddie is the best hitter in the National League,” said Johnson, who had three hits. Kimbrel couldnt hold the 2-1 lead in the ninth after Julio Teheran allowed only one hit — Mike Olts homer — in eight innings. Wesley Wright (0-1) walked Heyward to lead off the 10th. Heyward stole second base, setting up Wrights intentional walk to Upton. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he knows Cubs manager Rick Renteria faced a tough decision. “Youve got to pick your poison,” Gonzalez said. Freeman ended the game with his single. Heyward slid home with the winning run as Ryan Kalishs throw from centre field was off target. Luis Valbuena led off the 10th with a single to right field off Alex Wood (3-5), who then recorded three straight outs in his first relief appearance of the season. The Braves announced before the game Wood was moving to the bullpen for one week. The Braves eaarned only their second win in their last 10 games.ddddddddddddThe Cubs, last in the NL Central, have lost five of six but took some solace in the ninth-inning comeback off Kimbrel. “All in all, I take away we fought a pretty good battle, but we just fell a little short,” Renteria said. Olt led off the third inning with his seventh homer to give Chicago a 1-0 lead. Teheran retired 17 consecutive batters after the homer. Chris Coghlan led off the ninth with a single off Kimbrel. Coghlan moved to second on Emilio Bonifacios groundout and scored on a single to left by Kalish, who advanced to second on Justin Uptons fielding error. Kalish moved to third on Anthony Rizzos grounder to first. Kimbrel walked Starlin Castro before ending the inning on another grounder by Nate Schierholtz. “Theres definitely a lot of fight in this team,” Olt said. “As long as we keep fighting were going to find a way to come up with some wins.” Teheran began the night fifth in the majors with a 1.80 ERA and he lowered the mark to 1.71. He had a season-high nine strikeouts with two walks. Kimbrel suffered his second blown save in 11 chances. Chicagos Jason Hammel allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk in seven innings. The Braves only runs against Hammel came on a string of three straight two-out hits in the third. Freeman and Evan Gattis singled, Gattis moved to second on a wild pitch and Johnson drove both runners in with a single to left field. NOTES: The start of the game was delayed 18 minutes by rain. … Johnson capped his big night with an eighth-inning single before stealing second — his first stolen base since 2012 and only the 11th of his career. … Wood had been scheduled to start Sunday against the Cubs.
