CALGARY — Mikael Kingsbury has won almost everything there is to win in mens moguls. The prize hes missing is the biggest, and the chance to win it is on the near horizon. The 21-year-old from Deux-Montagnes, Que., is the reigning world champion and has won the World Cup overall title in moguls the last two years. Kingsbury is the heavy favourite to win Olympic gold in Sochi, Russia, next month. His chief rival for gold is Canadian teammate Alex Bilodeau, who happens to be the defending Olympic champion. Kingsbury added to his expanding coffers of hardware Saturday by winning a World Cup in Calgary. Kingsbury and Bilodeau were 1-2 in the final ahead of Patrick Deneen of the U.S. in third at Canada Olympic Park. Montreals Justine Dufour-Lapointe edged American Hannah Kearney for gold. Justines sister, Chloe, was third ahead of Andi Naude of Penticton, B.C., who finished fourth. Kingsbury extended his winning streak at the Calgary stop on the World Cup to four straight years. “Calgary is the best World Cup for me all over the world so far,” Kingsbury declared. "I feel like home everywhere in Canada. For sure I cant wait to ski in Quebec, but this year the course was awesome. “I felt very confident today. Thats the biggest point. I felt very good and in very good shape. Its looking good for Sochi.” The Canadian freestyle team earned seven out of a possible 12 medals in Calgary and placed another four athletes in the top five. The host country swept the mens halfpipe medals Friday with Justin Dorey of Vernon, B.C., Calgarys Noah Bowman and Matt Margetts of Penticton finishing first to third respectively. Freestyle halfpipe will make its Olympic debut in Sochi. The freestyle and short-track speedskating teams are expected to be the drivers of Canadas medal haul in Sochi, where the countrys goal is to win the overall medal count. Bilodeau, Kingsbury and Justine Dufour-Lapointe have already qualified for Canadas Olympic team. Kingsbury leads the World Cup standings again with his second victory this season. In moguls, a skiers results are determined by their time down the course and judges scores on their style and two jumps. Kingsbury scored 86.50 points followed by Bilodeau with 84.76. The Canadians had higher degrees of difficulty on their air elements than Deneen, who posted the fastest run time and scored 78.16. Bilodeau did not speak to reporters in Calgary after his performance, nor did the 26-year-old participate in a conference call scheduled for later in the day. Bilodeau looked unhappy after the race. His coach Michel Hamelin confirmed that Bilodeau felt he deserved better scores from the judges, and also that Bilodeau was undergoing post-race treatment at the time of the conference call. “Right now, hes in treatment for a massage for his legs,” Hamelin said. "Today at the course, he was down about the result. "He felt that when he skis right now, even if he does his best, he feels that he skis with a rock in his pocket. "Right now, the gap (between Bilodeau and Kingsbury) is a bit too much from the judges. If were second with a little bit tighter score well be fine with it. He was kind of upset about why am I not closer to him? “Were really above everyone, but those two guys should always be really tight on the score.” Dufour-Lapointe won the womens title in Calgary for the second straight year. With a score of 78.53, Dufour-Lapointe edged Kearney, who won Olympic gold in 2010 ahead of silver medallist Jennifer Heil of Canada. “Today, the good thing is I went fast and did clean jumps and thats how I win,” Dufour-Lapointe said. “To win a gold medal at home, its incredible.” Kearney scored 77.63 points followed by Chloe Dufour-Lapointe with 74.83. A third Dufour-Lapointe sister, Maxime, qualified for the six-skier final and finished fifth. “Im so happy she made this super final for us,” Justine said. “I just wish we could be the three of us at the Olympic Games.” Dufour-Lapointe and Kearney are tied atop the womens World Cup standings after two events. The moguls team has World Cup events in Deer Valley, Utah, Lake Placid, N.Y., and Val St. Come, Que., this month before heading to Russia. Every Canadian medallist in Calgary receives a $5,000 bonus from WinSport, which operates Canada Olympic Park. WinSport established the Sarah Burke Performance Awards in memory of the freestyle skier who died in a training accident in January, 2012. BANGKOK, Thailand – Lee Westwood followed his career-best 12-under 60 with a 64 on Friday to take a commanding 11-stroke lead at the halfway stage of the Thailand Golf Championship. The Englishman had eight birdies in his second straight bogey-free round at Amata Spring Country Club to reach 20 under overall. Westwood had 10 birdies and an eagle in the first round Thursday. “Arguably a better round this morning than yesterday in windy conditions!” Westwood tweeted. “64 to add to yesterdays 60. For sure the best Ive ever played. -20.” Masters champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa had a 66 on Friday and was tied for second at 9 under with American Michael Thompson, who also shot a 66. John Daly followed his opening-round 65 with a 73 to slip to fourth at 6 under, 14 shots adrift of Westwood. Victorias Rick Gibson (75) is tied for 64th at 3-over. With two rounds remaining, Westwood is within sight of Ernie Els record winning margin on the Asian Tour. Els won the 2005 Asian Open by 13 shots. “Ill try to keep the lead irrelevant and keep on playing as Ive been playing,” Westwood said. “Im playing pretty well and I want to maintain that and keep making birdies and no bogeys.” Schwartzel eagled the 15th and had six birdies, but bogeyed the 8th and 12th. He acknowledged that he only has a slim chance of catching Westwood. “I feel like Lee is playing his own tournament and we are playing something else,” he said. “Halfway through it now, I still feel like Ive got a very outside chance.” British Open champion Darren Clarke, Sergio Garcia of Spain and Ryo Ishikawa of Japan all narrowly made the cut at 3 over but Thailands top-ranked player Thongchai Jaidee retired after 13 holes Friday because of a back injury. . – Wednesdays lightweight bout between Canadian Sam (Hands of Stone) Stout and K.Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Dear Mr. Fraser, In the Islanders/Blues game on Saturday, the Isles had the apparent game-winning goal overturned in overtime because of a distinct kicking motion by Thomas Vanek. This was the explanation the referee received from Toronto after the goal was reviewed. Ive watched the play over and over, I cant see any kicking motion, let alone a distinct one. The Isles broadcast team thought it was a good goal. They even reported the Blues broadcast team called it a good goal. The Blues goalie (Jaroslav Halak) skated toward the gate leading to the visitors locker room (clearly, he must have figured it was a good goal). The NHL uses the word “distinct” to describe the words “kicking motion.” According to the dictionary, “distinct” means readily distinguishable by the senses. I would imagine that if the NHL added “distinct” they meant that the motion could not be interpreted as anything other than a kicking motion. What does a “distinct kicking motion” look like from a referees perspective? As a fan, I would assume the knee would have to bend a bit or the thigh would have to move somewhat, especially if we are talking about a motion being “distinct.” I know the NHL can overturn referees calls if there is conclusive evidence, but what does mean if the video doesnt seem to support the explanation. Does the NHL mean “distinct kicking motion” in a figurative or a literal way? Is there an explanation for “distinct” that the NHL uses that fans and internet analysts are not aware of? How does the NHL determine conclusive evidence to overturn a call, especially when most people watching assumed the goal was a good one? The refs didnt spend a long time at the timekeepers station, so the evidence should have been distinct to everyone watching, which is wasnt according to how many people thought the goal should have stood. The NHL had to see something that they consider “distinct,” but that the rest of people watching may not have considered (this is my speculation). Its that “something” that has prompted my email inquiry to you. Was this simply a bad call by the guys in Toronto (a frustrating bad call in my personal opinion)? I appreciate you taking the time to read this email. I enjoy reading your column on TSN.ca. Thank you,Michael Bonet Michael: Thank you for your detailed question along with the logical (and expert) analysis you provided relative to the goal Thomas Vanek scored in overtime. To the referees eye, mind and perspective Thomas Vanek did NOT use a “distinct kicking motion” to propel the puck past Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak and score the game-winning goal in overtime. This was another example of an “officiating decisiion” made correctly on the ice that was overturned by “non-officiating personnel” that staff the Situation Room on a nightly basis.dddddddddddd (NFL and MLB employ and empower referees/umpires to make final video review decisions). The guidelines and definition in determining a “distinct kicking motion” must have changed drastically, at least concerning Situation Room criteria employed, from when the kicking puck rule was first explained to my colleagues and I during a training camp meeting the season the rule was implemented. Otherwise Thomas Vaneks goal and the one scored by Brendan Gallagher of the Habs against Martin Brodeur last week (both of which were deemed legal by the referee in great position on the ice) would not have been overturned and disallowed through the video review process. The definition in rule 38.4 (iv) remains the same as when it was explained to us in that training camp meeting by Hockey Ops that still control the Situation Room. “A DISTINCT KICKING MOTION is one which, with a pendulum motion, the player propels the puck with his skate into the net. If the Video Goal Judge determines that it was put into the net by an attacking player using a distinct kicking motion, it must be ruled NO GOAL.” As you correctly pointed out, Michael, the former NHL players working as analysts on both the NY Islanders and St. Louis Blues broadcast teams were convinced that Vaneks goal should count. They went so far as to say that Vanek wouldnt have known where the puck was as he rotated his body position away from Halak at the top of the goal crease and was then shoved from behind by Alexander Steen of the Blues. A referees perspective would clearly indicate that the bump from behind by Steen changed Vaneks rotation to a forward motion toward the net and caused the puck to be deflected off Vaneks skate and into the net. (Rule 49.2 – A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking players skate who does not use a distinct kicking motion is a legitimate goal. A puck that is directed into the net by an attacking plays skate shall be a legitimate goal as long as no distinct kicking motion is evident). We can envision various legal plays when a player is allowed to deliberately turn and angle his skate to direct a puck into the net or even makes a natural sliding stop at the crease in order to contact the puck causing it to enter the goal. Unless there has been some change in the definition and criteria of a “distinct kicking motion” it makes no sense that Thomas Vaneks goal would be disallowed through a video review decision. If there has been a “distinct” change in the criteria that the Situation Room employs in rendering their exclusive decisions, perhaps it is time they advise the rest of the hockey world! Until that takes place, Michael, this decision will be viewed by most as “simply a bad call by the guys in Toronto!” ’ ’ ’

The physical first period featured a number of big hits by both teams. The tough play continued in the scoreless second period. After taking two straight penalties, Chiefs defenceman Corbin Baldwin left halfway through the period with an apparent shoulder injury after a hard hit along the boards, but returned to the game in the third. Spokane made the game 2-1 early in the third when Valcourt knocked in a goal-mouth rebound. The Royals tied it up when Crooks took a shot from the face-off circle that went off a Spokane defender and into the top corner behind Engel. EASTBOURNE, England - Former champions Caroline Wozniacki and Ekaterina Makarova headed in different directions in the Aegon International quarterfinals on Thursday. Wozniacki, champion in 2009, held off a strong challenge from Camila Giorgi of Italy 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-2. Makarova, the 2010 champ from Russia, fell to fifth seed Angelique Kerber 6-2, 6-1, with the German avenging her second-round defeat to Makarova last year. Meanwhile, 2011 Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova withdrew with a right hamstring injury but expects to play in Wimbledon next week. Wozniacki and Giorgi were interrupted in the second set when a spectator was removed from the stands on a stretcher as Giorgi led 4-3 on serve. When play resumed, Giorgi failed to win a break point to lead 5-3 and Wozniacki went on to win three straight games to level at one-set all. Wozniacki remained under pressure in the final set, fighting off two break points before breaking to lead 2-1. A double-fault at 4-2 left Wozniacki serving for victory, and in sight of her first title since October. “It feels good,” Wozniacki said of her win. “Game feels in really good shape. Camila played really well. I really had to be focused out there.” Kerber fought off four break points just to hold for 1-1 before taking charge against Makarova, breaking twice to take the set. In the second set, she needed four break points to win the first game before once more dominating Makarova. “It was not as easy as the score said, because there were tough rallies,” Kerber said. “Shes a great player on grass, so I was just focusing on me, trying to be aggressive and take my chances. I did a good job.” Kvitovas withdrawal gave British wild card Heather Watson a walkover into the semifinals. Watson will meet Madison Keys, who beat fellow American Lauren Davis, a qualifier, 6-2, 6-1. Wozniacki faces Kerber. Mens top seed Richard Gasquet also reached the semis, beating Slovak Martin Klizan 6-3, 6-4. It is his third semifinal of the year and comes after he was sidelined for more than three months with a back injury. The Frenchman, who claimed the title in 2005 and 2006 when the event was held in Nottingham, broke for 3-1. That was enough to earn him the opening set, and in the second set he again fought off a break point before breaking to lead 4-3. Gasquet is playing only his third tournament since March, and admits that although he is progressing he is still not fully fit. “Its always difficult to come back,” Gasquet said. “You are questioning yourself every day on your body. Im not 100 per cent on my game and everything, but Im playing better and better. I served well. I could play with power.” Gasquet will next play Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, who beat Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France 7-6 (5), 6-2. Spanish defending champion Feliciano Lopez will play his quarterfinal against Jeremy Chardy of France on Friday after the match was cancelled overnight due to rain. The winner will play Sam Querrey, also on Friday, after the American beat Frenchman Julien Benneteau 7-6 (5), 6-4. Kerry Fraser wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Kerry, Love the column. Had a couple questions from the Battle of Ontario game on Tuesday night between Toronto and Ottawa. Phaneuf and Spezza had some words and on the next shift, Foligno clipped Phaneuf, drawing only a two-minute penalty (as a side note, I see no difference between this check and the Marchand hit last week. Neither was technically below the knee, as the rule requires, but the intent was the exact same in both. Not sure why only two minutes were given). A few shifts later at 13:16, Phaneuf and Foligno fought, but Phaneuf was given an extra roughing penalty afterward! Ive watched the replay 50 times, and Phaneuf gives Foligno a couple of insignificant shoves before both players dropped the gloves simultaneously. Why was Phaneuf given this extra penalty? Just after Toronto killed that penalty, Spezza was given credit for Ottawas second goal despite basically using Reimer as a lounge chair in the crease without being pushed in at all. Is there any other reason for this besides a pure miss by the referee? And would you be for or against expanding replay rules to include reviewing goaltender interference? Thanks,Go Leafs,Ben in Utah Ben: In spite of your understandable bias toward the Toronto Maple Leafs your officiating is pretty darn good as you made the call on these three plays. I agree with your judgment on two of them. The one that we differ on is the Nick Foligno clip on Dion Phaneuf. While you could certainly argue that the clip (Watch the video here) appears to be similar to the low bridge hit that Brad Marchand delivered on Sami Salo there are also some distinct differences I wish to point out. When Salo approached Marchand in a similar area on the ice, Salo did not come with a menacing or engaging posture but more intent on playing the puck (Yes players should expect to be hit at all times but a lack of engagement on Salos part is part of the equation). Conversely, Dion Phaneuf approached Nick Foligno in an engaging posture and elevated himself and braced to make body contact with the Ottawa Senator forward (Watch Phaneuf raise and stiffen his body and hands just prior to contact as Foligno drops in a downward position). The point of contact is different in these two hits as Brad Marchand drops lower on the unsuspecting Salo (Watch the video here) than Foligno did with Phaneuf. Marchand drops down to the knee area and lifts Salo up and over causing the Canuck to fall on his head (Salo suffered a concussion as a result oof the low clipping infraction).dddddddddddd Given the elevation of posture that I have established Dion Phaneuf demonstrated, his willingness and expectation to engage his opponent in physical contact, coupled with the fact that Foligno bent in half (not as low as Marchand) resulted in the area of contact being between Phaneufs hip and thigh. Under normal circumstances this could have been deemed a “hip check” had Phaneufs upward elevation not resulted in such an awkward fall. A two minute clipping penalty was most appropriate here. Relative to Brendan Shanahans decision on Brad Marchands low bridge hit is the fact that Salo was injured on the play (concussion after falling on the back of his head) and that Marchand had been suspended on a previous incident. Dion Phaneuf was not injured on the play and returned to take a regular shift throughout the balance of the game. Based on the merits and appearance of these two similar yet distinctly different plays I do not believe that Nick Foligno should be suspended or fined. At 13:16 of the second period Dion Phaneuf, still smarting from the clipping minor to Foligno, pinched up the boards and after poking the puck away engaged Nick Foligno with a couple of quick bumps. While there was certainly a willingness and some intent on Dion Phaneufs part to initiate an altercation with Foligno, he did it in a very calculated way so as to not incur an instigator penalty. I give Dion full marks for his rule of engagement here. When pressed, Nick Foligno knew that he had to answer the bell and became a willing combatant prior to the gloves coming off. I therefore agree with you Ben that an additional minor penalty for roughing that was assessed to Phaneuf was an overreaction on the part of the referee and unnecessary. Finally we look at the Jason Spezza goal that he tipped into the open cage (Watch the video here) while he had the Leafs goalie, James Reimer securely under foot/skate and unable to defend his net. Spezza cut behind and contacted Leafs defenceman, Carl Gunnarsson with a fork hook between the legs. At that point Spezza backed into Reimer who was maintaining a butterfly position inside the top of his goal crease. Jason Spezza never became disentangled with Reimer until after tipping the puck into the back of the net. Since Jason Spezza made contact with James Reimer inside the blue paint and then remained in contact straddling Reimers pads, any goal that resulted should have been disallowed through incidental contact. No goal – no penalty to Spezza. Good call Ben. Two-for-three is a pretty good average that some refs might be happy with. ’ ’ ’

DOHA, Qatar — Sergio Garcia birdied the third extra hole to beat Mikko Ilonen in a playoff Saturday and win the Qatar Masters for his second victory in three events. Garcia entered the round three shots behind overnight leader Rafa Cabrera-Bello but birdied six of his last 12 for a 7-under 65, forcing Ilonen to make an 18-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to force the playoff with a 66. They both finished on 16-under 272. Garcia missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the last that would have given him the win in regulation, and then couldnt make an eagle putt for the victory on the first playoff hole. The Spaniard and Ilonen both had birdies on the second extra hole as well before Garcia sealed the victory with a tap-in birdie at the third to Ilonens par. “I started the day thinking if I can shoot a 6 or 7 under, I can have a chance,” Garcia. “Im very happy to be able to win it.” Cabrera-Bello only managed a 69 and fell to a tie for third with Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark (68). Garcias victory helped make up for last years disappointment in Doha, when he finished runner-up after Englands Chris Wood eagled the last hole to claim his first European Tour win. It also came on the heels of his victory at the Thailand Golf Championship in December, when he had his girlfriend Katharina Boehm caddie for him. Boehm was among the first to congratulate him after he sealed the win on Saturday. “When things off the golf course are on good terms it is a little easier to concentrate when you dont have too many things in your head,” Garcia said. "I am very fortunate with Kathy and with my family and all those around me, so its great to be playing well and to be in this winning situation with the goal now to keep improving. “I still feel like I can do better and that is the goal.” Ilonen was seeking just his third tour victory after ending a six-year winless drought last June at the Nordea Masters. “I came up two shots short of my target in regulation thinking a 64 would win outright, but a 66 was good enough for the playoff,” the Finn said. “But Sergio was a bit better than me.” Olesen had the chance to join the playoff but missed his eight-foot eagle putt on 18. European No. 1 Henrik Stenson finished strongly with birdies on his last four holes for a 67 that put him in a tie for 28th — perhaps a good sign at the end of a disappointing tournament ahead of next weeks Dubai Desert Classic. BOSTON — Jordan Crawford says the young Boston Celtics have a few things to learn about finishing out close games. Crawford took over the role of teacher Tuesday night, scoring 15 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to help the Celtics hold off the Milwaukee Bucks 108-100. “Weve just got to learn to stay focused and pull out these wins — grind them out,” said Crawford, who was 5 for 5 from the field in the fourth, including three 3-pointers. Jeff Green added 18 points and Brandon Bass added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Celtics, who were coming off a 92-85 loss to the Bucks on Saturday in Milwaukee. Of Milwaukees three wins this season, two have come against Boston and the Celtics avoided having the total reach three by holding off the Bucks down the stretch. “We moved the ball side to side and inside-out way better than we did Saturday,” coach Brad Stevens said. “Maybe thats a little bit of karma for why the shots went in.” Avery Bradley scored 15 and Jared Sullinger finished with 12 points as all five starters scored in double figures for Boston, which had lost two of three. The Bucks had just snapped an 11-game losing streak by beating the Celtics on Saturday in Milwaukee, but couldnt quite rally from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter. “I think were getting a little better. They still made a run and made it close,” Crawford said. O.J. Mayo scored 19, and Brandon Knight had 15 points and six assists for Milwaukee. Khris Middleton added 14 points for the Bucks, who were outrebounded by the Celtics 40-33. The win put the Celtics at least in a temporary tie for first place with Toronto, which played later Tuesday at Golden State. But in the Atlantic Division, which currently doesnt have a team with a winning record, the standings arent all that impressive. “Were 8-12. Its not likee were lighting the world on fire,” Stevens said.dddddddddddd The Celtics led by as many as 15 points and had a 13-point lead in the final period cut to three twice before holding on for the win. “I felt we were right there. They just made the tough shots,” Milwaukee coach Larry Drew said. “They made the plays down the stretch and we did not.” Giannis Antetokounm pulled Milwaukee within 69-65 with an alley-oop dunk to open the fourth quarter. Crawford answered for Boston with a 3-pointer, starting the Celtics on a 15-6 run that nearly put a comeback out of reach for Milwaukee. Lee followed his 3-pointer with a jumper to put the Celtics up 81-71, then Crawford hit a 3-pointer to put Boston up 84-71 with 7:51 left. The Bucks got back in it with a 13-4 run, pulling within 90-87 on a pair of free throws by John Henson, then made another charge late in the period for a close finish. Knights 3-pointer with 1:10 remaining cut Bostons lead to 99-96, but Sullinger answered at the other end, beating the shot clock with a jumper that put Boston back up 101-96. Stevens said he put Sullinger in a bad position with the play, but the young forward beat a double-team and got the shot when the Celtics needed it. “Its a good player making a good play and bailing out a bad coach,” Stevens said. Knight missed everything on another 3-point attempt for Milwaukee and the Celtics held on to win it. NOTES: Two of the Bucks three wins this season have come against the Celtics. … Caron Butler (knee) missed his third straight game for the Bucks. … Boston rookie Kelly Olynyk (sprained right ankle) did not dress. … The Celtics committed just one turnover in the first quarter. … Milwaukee was playing the first of back-to-back nights. The Bucks host Detroit on Wednesday. … Kris Humphries and Sullinger pulled down eight rebounds apiece. ’ ’ ’

REGINA — Andrew Harris gave the B.C. Lions exactly what they were looking for — a boost and a win. Harris provided a spark Saturday night and the Lions defence pitched a second-half shutout in a 26-13 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium. Harris racked up 203 total yards and scored one touchdown to lift the Lions (1-2), who had been playing with a listless offence the first two weeks of the season, to their first win. The Riders, meanwhile, have lost two straight and share the same record heading into their bye week. “I think the confidence is building with our offensive line a and we were embarrassed last week (in Montreal) and so we really came back with a vengeance tonight,” said Harris. “We have to build off of this now and take this confidence and go forward with it.” The all-star running back racked up 145 total yards in the first half, including 94 yards along the ground. His 58-yard run for a touchdown late in the first quarter gave the Lions an 11-0 advantage and was the teams lone major in the opening two quarters. Harris finished the night with 132 yards rushing and 65 receiving, both of which were team highs. “This was a character win more than anything,” Harris said. Quarterback Kevin Glenn, who had thrown six interceptions in his first two games with the Lions, played turnover-free football on Saturday. He completed 16 of 27 pass attempts for 170 yards and one touchdown. Glenns 20-yard touchdown strike to Courtney Taylor midway through the fourth quarter gave the Lions a 26-13 lead and sent the majority of the 32,864 spectators scrambling for the exits. “Its hard to come in here and get a win,” Lions linebacker Solomon Elimimian said. “They had a great crowd here and thats the kind of crowd you want to play in front of. Its just a you against the world kind of feeling and it makes you depend even more on that guy next to you, trust in your teammates even more.” Quarterback Darian Durant and Roughriders offence struggled for much of the night. Durant completed just 15 of 34 pass attempts for 191 yards. “We were 0-2 and no one gave us a shot to win this game,” Elimimian said. “We knew a lot of times what (the Riders) were trying to do. The biggest thing with Durant is containing him a hes the main cog in that offence and we got some hits on him tonight and that slowed him down.” The Riders held a brief 13-11 lead late in the second quarter after Durant hooked up with receiver Taj Smith on a five-yard touchdown pass and catch. But after Hugh Charles lost a fumble on the Riders next possession, Paul McCallum kicked a 41-yard field goal, one of three on the night, to give the Lions a 14-13 advantage going into the half. Saskatchewans Chris Milo made two field goals, also in the second quarter. “Im disappointed,” Durant said after the game. “I thought we would come out and put on a better performance than what we did. Rendon connected for a two-run double in a four-run fourth and added a solo home run in the sixth. The Houston native added a double in the first and a single in the third but flew out to left in the eighth. Zimmermann (2-1) scattered seven hits in 6 1-3 innings. He struck out seven to earn his 45th win with the Nationals, making him the winningest pitcher since the Montreal Expos moved to Washington in 2005. Denard Span and Kevin Frandsen each had two hits and Danny Espinosa also had two hits, including a solo home run in the fifth that chased Brett Oberholtzer (0-5). Span put the Nationals up 1-0 in the third with a triple to centre field, and he scored on an error by George Springer. Frandsen extended the lead to 2-0 in the fourth, scoring on Jesus Guzmans error after advancing to third on Sandy Leons single. After Rendons double, Jayson Werth singled to score the third baseman. Oberholtzer allowed six runs on 11 hits withh three walks and five strikeouts in 4 2-3 innings.dddddddddddd The left-hander has struggled his last two starts, allowing 12 runs in 8 1-3 innings. Washington first baseman Adam LaRoche was out of the lineup Wednesday with a quad injury. “He did it last night running to second on the double,” Washington manager Matt Williams said. “I didnt want to take him out of the lineup but its probably better to give him two. Were trying to get him as much rest as we can and try to calm it down a little bit.” ’ ’ ’

ST. PAUL, Minn. — On a night when two of the biggest stars in the NHL were on the ice, Minnesotas fourth line stepped up to help the Wild continue their surge toward the playoffs. Cody McCormick had a goal and an assist, and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped all 20 shots he faced in the Wilds 4-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night. Erik Haula, Mikko Koivu, and Stephane Veilleux also scored for the Wild, who have gone 3-0-1 over their past four games. With four games to play, they hold a five-point cushion over Dallas for the seventh playoff spot in the Western Conference. With Olympic captains Sidney Crosby of Canada playing for the Penguins and Zach Parise of the United States on the ice for the Wild, Minnesota won with huge nights from some of its least-heralded players. The fourth line, centred by McCormick, accounted for two goals and helped keep the Penguins off the board all night. “When you get contributions from your energy guys like we did tonight with Cody and Veilleux, it goes such a long way for the team,” Parise said. “I thought those guys had such a good game tonight when they were out there. They were hitting, they didnt give up anything against, defensively, and they got the big goals.” The Wild jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first period, scoring on three of their first five shots against Pittsburgh rookie goalie Jeff Zatkoff. Haula started the scoring just 1:42 into the game, chipping a backhand shot over Zatkoffs shoulder on the back end of a give-and-go with Matt Moulson. Haula had spent most of his rookie season on the fourth line, but hes scored twice in two games while filling in for Mikael Granlund, who has missed the past two games with an upper-body injury. Koivu put Minnesota up 2-0 on its fourth shot of the game, scoring his 11th of the season just under 9 minutes in. Koivu carried the puck across the Penguins blue line, waited patiently for Parise to crash the net, then flicked a wrist shot past a screened Zatkoff. Veilleux pushed the lead to 3-0 on a gift goal from Zatkoff. McCormick fed the puck into the slot, where Veilleux corralled it, spun and fired a shot that was headed wide of the net. Zatkoff tried to glove it, but he mishandled the puck and it trickled behind him and into the net. “They got three goals on six shots in the first period and got out to that lead,” Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. “We were certainly from behind in this game and couldnt generate a lot going the other way.” Bryzgalov posted his second shutout since being acquired by the Wild on March 4. He was steady throughout and made a pair of outstanding saves in the second period to keep the shutout intact. First he sprawled to his right to rob James Neal with a stick save. A few minutes later, he kicked out his right leg just in time to stuff Lee Stempniak, who was alone at the left post after a rebound off the back boards had bounced out to him. “We were pretty good defensively, but they had a bit of a push right from the start,” Wild coach Mike Yeo said. “They had some shots, but he just settled everything right down. He looked so calm and in control and the team definitely feeds off that.” With four games to play, Pittsburgh has all but wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. So while Saturdays outcome wasnt ideal, Crosby said the Penguins wont overreact to the loss as they prepare for the final week of the season. “Just play the right way,” he said of their approach heading down the stretch. “We know what that is. Weve done a pretty good job of it. Its just a matter of making sure we find that urgency here for the last couple.” NOTES: The game was played before 19,409 fans, the largest crowd for a Wild game in the history of Xcel Energy Center, which opened in 2000. … McCormicks assist on Veilleuxs goal was his first point with the Wild. PORTLAND, Ore. – Brendan Leipsic had a goal and an assist in his return from a one-game suspension, and the Portland Winterhawks defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings 3-1 in Game 2 of the Western Hockey League final Sunday. Portland leads the series 2-0, with Games 3 and 4 coming Tuesday and Wednesday in Edmonton. Chase De Leo and Paul Bitter also scored for Portland, while goaltender Corbin Boes made 28 saves in victory. Henrik Samuelsson scored a third-period goal for Edmonton, which got 29 saves from Tristan Jarry in defeat. Portland has now won 24 straight games at home, including all eight in the post-season. The Winterhawks last lost on home ice on Jan. 4. Overall, Portland has won 42 of its last 45 games dating to the regular season. De Leo opened the scoring 2:12 into the game with a long wrist shot that squeezed between the pads of Jarry. Leipsic scored his 13th goal of the playoffs 1:02 later to give Portland a 2-0 lead and force the Oil Kings to use their timeout. Bittner made it 3-0 at the 4:32 mark of the second period as his shot from just inside the blue-line hit Oil Kings defenceman Dysin Mayo and fluttered into the net. Samuelsson gave the Oil Kings a glimmer of hope when he deflected a shot by Ashton Sautner past Boes for a power-play goal with 6:28 remaining in regulation. Edmonton couldnt pull any closer, though, despite a spirited push in the final minutes. Clarkson blocked a shot from New York defenceman Michael Del Zotto midway through the first period. He hobbled to the bench and seemed to be in a lot of pain once there. The 29-year-old, who has three goals and five assists this season, went to the bench shortly thereafter. Clarkson returned to the bench later and took one 21-second shift early in the second period before leaving again.dddddddddddd Minutes after Clarkson was injured, Gunnarsson took a hit from Carl Hagelin on his left shoulder, and the 27-year-olds right shoulder was rammed into the glass. Chris Spring and his Canada-1 crew were 13th in 3:42.84. The 39-year-old Zubkov predicted the third run of the competition would decide everything and he was right. He padded his lead considerably in that heat, and no one could keep pace. Not long afterward, he enjoyed what was a golden final joyride down the track, clinching the title by 0.09 seconds. While the spotlight has been on potential first overall draft pick Jadeveon Clowney and his 40-yard time, and top quarterback prospect Blake Bortles during the throwing drills, top prospects Greg Robinson and Sammy Watkins have impressed scouts enough to solidify or even boost their spots on draft boards. Showing more spark after not taking enough challenging shots on goal in their 1-0 loss Friday night, the Bruins had 18 shots in the first period after managing just 25 in the entire opener. Luke Glendening cut Bostons lead to 2-1 at 13:20 of the second period before Milan Lucic scored late in the second and Zdeno Chara added a power-play goal early in the third. When speaking with Mauro Biello shortly after the clubs 1-1 tie in Philadelphia on March 29, the Impact assistant looked at the result as a point gained and not a case of another two lost. The same cant be said of last Saturdays 2-2 draw at Olympic Stadium against a very weakened New York Red Bulls side and one which had three stalwarts in Henry, Cahill and Olave back home in Harrison, NJ. With confidence and belief at the lowest of ebbs with barely five minutes on the board the Impact could not have asked for the better start as Felipe threaded the ball perfectly into the space Romero was running into. You could almost feel the relief on the Impact bench as Romero intricately placed his shot just inside the far post. Dominating the possession early on and carving out opportunity seemingly with ease – this was a Red Bulls team that was certainly there for the taking. However, come the final whistle, the post-match discussion yet again was dominated by the Impacts inability to defend effectively. It is the basic and elementary aspects of the craft which have been their unravelling. We saw glimpses of this through the pre-season and alarmingly the trend has been allowed to continue as the season has progressed. How much longer the team can afford to set themselves up in a loose fitting 4-2-3-1 system remains to be seen. Saturday afternoon at Olympic Stadium, and just like 2012s maiden MLS season, the Impact will go into a sixth match of the season still in search of their first victory of the season. With this as the backdrop a match against the Chicago Fire could not have come at a worse time for Frank Klopas as his old club come into Montreal in search of its initial victory this term too. His successor at the Fire – Frank Yallop – spoke in glowing terms during the week about the man he replaced. “I know Frank well, playing against him, coaching against him and socially. Hes a good guy.” Klopass Chicago football roots go all the way back to 1983 when he played with the NASLs Chicago Sting. It was during this time Klopas got to visit, and play in Montreal. A city he continued to visit through intervening years during Christmas shopping trips with his wife. Familiarity with Montreal also extends itself through Fire ownership. Club president Andrew Hauptman is married to Charles Bronfmans daughter Ellen. The original Expos owneer was special guest of honour at Olympic Stadium when the Impact played the Fire in front of close to 59,000 during the clubs home debut in MLS back on Mar.dddddddddddd. 17, 2012. With the Impact buoyed McInerneys paperwork has now been sorted out the Fire counter this with news Mike Magee has signed a new deal. Reports yesterday indicated that the league MVP and Golden Boot recipient native had doubled his salary. News coming on the very same day the MLS Players Union released 2014 salary figures. Magee missed the two opening games of the season due to a hamstring recurrence. But just like Marco Di Vaio before him, opened his 2014 account against the Philadelphia Union when the 29-year old Chicago native opened the scoring in last Saturdays 2-2 draw at Toyota Park. Impact players and coaches this week appeared to sound a collective sigh of relief now McInerey had joined their ranks. Di Vaio going as far to say he had the soccer goods that would not look out of order in Europe. Klopas didnt hesitate when asked if the two could play together. Lets see, and in what context. Someone likely missing from the starting XI will be Hernan Bernadello – who was substituted late on against the Red Bulls after landing awkwardly. The 27-year old made his club debut against the Fire last August but due to an ankle injury only managed to feature in eight matches in 2013. Bernier who didnt look at all out of sorts when he came on to replace the DP likely could be inserted into tomorrows line up. The club captain played and scored during the Impacts reserve team outing at Olympic Stadium last Sunday. Tomorrow at Olympic Stadium the Impact go into the match on the back of a solitary victory in their last 13 league matches. Patience will be worn mighty thin though if come 6pm Saturday that number extends itself to 14. It would most certainly sour the planned chance for the two Franks to share a post-game bottle of wine. Ominously on the two previous occasions, the Chicago Fire has played against a former coach they have come out on the winning side each time. Both wins secured on the road. NORMAN, Okla. — Ryan Spanglers intense play has fueled Oklahomas growth this season. The sophomore forward had 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to help the 23rd-ranked Sooners defeat No. 8 Oklahoma State 88-76 on Monday night. Spangler, in his first season playing for Oklahoma after transferring from Gonzaga, has displayed an energy level that has helped change the Sooners from a team that could just score a lot of points into one that held Oklahoma State to 40 per cent shooting. “Ryans kind of been the cornerstone for our growth in the toughness area,” Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. “I think were getting tougher. I think weve made big strides in that area.” It was the first time both teams have entered a “Bedlam” rivalry game ranked since 2005. The Sooners got great efforts from a few unexpected sources. Freshman Jordan Woodard scored 17 of his 18 points in the second half and reserve Tyler Neal added a season-high 15 points for the Sooners (17-4, 6-2 Big 12), who won their fourth straight game and claimed their third win over a ranked conference opponent this season. Woodard averaged just 11 points a game and Neal averaged 5.9 coming into the game. “Thats kind of been the trademark of this team all year long — different guys, different nights, stepping up and giving us great support,” Kruger said. “We beat a great Oklahoma State team. That makes it even more satisfying.” Oklahoma shot 46 per cent from the field and made 8 of 17 3-pointers. The Cowboys committed 29 fouls and were outscored 30-15 at the free throw line. Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said the poor defence and the foul trouble were related. “We didnt defend very much,” he said. “When you dont defend, you put yourself in position to foul. Give them credit. They beat us off the dribble. Fouling is usually a product of being out of position.” Oklahoma State guard Phil Forte said the team has to handle situations like Mondays better. “We need to quit worrying about the refs and all that and just play,” he said. “Move onto the next play. Thats the most important thing.” Marcus Smart had 22 points on 6-of-18 shooting and spent much of the game in foul trouble. Forte scored 20 points and made all six of his 3-point tries and Markel Brown added 18 points for the Cowboys (16-4, 4-3). OSUs LeBryan Nash, who scored a career-high 29 points against West Virginia on Saturday, fouled out with eight points in 17 minutes. Oklahoma dominated early as Oklahoma States Smart, Nash and Stevie Clark all committed two fouls in the first 12 minutes. Forte gave the Cowboys some life with two deep 3-pointers in a run that trimmed Oklahomas lead to 32-26. The Sooners extended it to 46-36 on a 3-pointer by Neal with 46 seconds left in the first half, and the Sooners led 46-38 at the break. Neal scored 10 in the first half. Smart played just 6 minutes in the first half and had six points on 2-for-4 shooting. Woodard drained a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to push Oklahomas lead to 53-41, and he later hit a 3-pointer to bump OUs lead to 13. A 3 by Frank Booker increased the Sooners lead to 16 points, then Nash committed his fourth foul with 14:17 remaining, and Clark fouled out with 12:18 to go. A 3-pointer by Smart and a dunk by Brown cut OUs lead to 64-57. Spangler scored on a putback, was fouled by Smart and made the free throw to put the Sooners up 75-62 with just over 6 minutes to play. Oklahoma State cut Oklahomas lead to six, but Woodards 3-pointer with just under 3 minutes left bumped the Sooners lead to 10. “Give them credit,” Ford said. “Every time we would make a semi-run at them, they would make a big shot and we would make a silly play.” The rematch is Feb. 15 at Oklahoma State. “Theyre a great team,” Neal said. “Theyre going to do some good things this year, and were going to have to be ready when we play them in Stillwater.” .C. - Major League Soccers Vancouver Whitecaps and the City of New Westminster have signed a memorandum of understanding towards bringing a United Soccer Leagues Pro franchise to the British Columbia city. Houston overcame a four-run deficit to win. Dexter Fowler singled with one out in the ninth, Jason Castro drew a walk and Dominguez hit a long fly ball off Nick Martinez (0-1).BRISBANE, Australia – Serena Williams extended her winning streak against Maria Sharapova to 14 matches with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) semifinal victory Friday to earn a shot at back-to-back Brisbane International titles. The defending champion will play second-seeded Victoria Azarenka in Saturdays final, and will be favoured to retain the title that kicked off her stunning 2013 season that included 78 wins from 82 matches and 11 titles. After blowing two match points in the tiebreaker, Williams sealed the win with her seventh ace against the third-seeded Sharapova. In their first meeting since the French Open final, the uneasy rivals barely exchanged glances before the match and only briefly shook hands after. Both players were returning aggressively — leading to 15 double-faults between them and six breaks of serve in the second set — and hitting their grounds strokes hard and deep. Williams hit consecutive double-faults to give Sharapova a mini-break at 5-4 in the tiebreaker, something she said she couldnt remember ever doing before on tour. Sharapova responded with a double-fault to make it 5-5, and said shed missed her opportunities. “I had a few missed chances … but overall Im happy I can compete at this level in my third match back,” Sharapova said. “Its a good sign for me.” Any friendship that existed between the pair soured when they traded personal barbs relating to their romantic relationships ahead of last years Wimbledon, where Sharapova made an early exit. Sharapova only played one match after that in 2013 as she recovered from a right shoulder problem. Williams said shed need to vastly improve her first-serve percentage — which sunk to 40 in the semifinals — to beat Australian Open champion Azarenka, who overcame a shaky serve and another case of the nerves to beat former No. 1-ranked Jelena Jankovic 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Facing two of her biggest rivals back-to-back in her first tournament of the year, and less than two weeks before the Australian Open, is a big step up in preparations for Williams. “Yeah, I feel like Im being pushed into the deep end straightaway,” she saiid.dddddddddddd. “I also think its a good thing.” Azarenka had her problems on serve, too. She dropped her first three service games and was facing three break points in the opening game of the second set when she shifted the momentum with a winner she picked up on a half-volley when Jankovic was in control of the point. After needing 10 match points to beat Stefanie Voegele in the quarterfinals the previous night, Azarenka missed one chance to serve it out at 5-2 in the deciding set, conceding a break with a double-fault. She then missed a match point at 5-4 but held her nerve and finally finished it off on her second match point. The prospect of a match against another top four player so close to the Australian Open doesnt daunt Azarenka. “I dont think its ever too early. If you want to win big titles you got to play against the best players,” she said. On the mens side, top-seeded Roger Federer coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marinko Matosevic of Australia and moved into a semifinal against No. 8 Jeremy Chardy of France. Second-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan reached the semifinals with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over Marin Cilic of Croatia and will next play former No. 1-ranked Lleyton Hewitt, who cruised past Romanian qualifier Marius Copil 6-4, 6-2. Both Williams sisters will be playing finals Saturday, with Venus Williams to face Ana Ivanovic in the title match at the WTA tournament in Auckland, New Zealand. Venus Williams got a walkover into her first final since October 2012 when Jamie Hampton withdrew from their semifinal with a right hip injury. Ivanovic beat third-seeded Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 6-2, 7-6 (3). At the Hopman Cup, France clinched a place in the final against Poland with a victory over winless Spain. Alize Cornet beat Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-2, 6-2 before Jo-Wilfried Tsonga sealed the victory by defeating 194th-ranked Daniel Munoz-De La Nava 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-2. The Czech Republic took a 3-0 win over the United States after John Isner withdrew ahead of his singles match and Sloane Stephens retired with a left wrist problem after losing the first set 6-3 to Petra Kvitova. ’ ’ ’

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - The Buffalo Bills have signed Canadian defensive tackle Stefan Charles to their 53-man roster. The Bills made the move Wednesday. The six-foot-five, 323-pound Charles, a native of Oshawa, Ont., joined the Bills after spending the first eight weeks of the season on the Tennessee Titans practice roster. Charles signed with Tennessee after being bypassed in last years NFL draft. The former University of Regina star was selected in the second round, 10th overall, in the 2013 CFL draft by the Edmonton Eskimos. Charles appeared in 20 games at Regina, registering 9.5 sacks and 74 tackles. . CORK, Ireland — Mikko Ilonen of Finland birdied the last hole to stay on top of the Irish Open leaderboard after the third round on Saturday. Ilonen, who has led from the outset, carded a 2-under-par 69 to move to a 12-under total at Fota Island. The leader by two shots overnight, Ilonen will take a one-shot lead into the final round over Danny Willett of England, who eclipsed Ilonens own course record by a shot with an 8-under 63 that also included a hole-in-one at the seventh. One shot further back on 10 under was crowd favourite Graeme McDowell, who birdied two of his closing three holes in a score of 69. The Northern Irishman was not only targeting a first victory this year but also a maiden Irish Open victory. “Its been fun to come here this week after the pressures of last weeks U.S. Open and just let off some steam and relax, and enjoy my golf again, and also enjoy the odd pint of Guinness in the evenings,” McDowell said. "I will now try and give the crowds what they want tomorrow, and thats an Irish winner, but then there is a lot of names up on the leaderboard who will have issues with that. “Winning the Irish Open is well up my leaderrboard as far as wish lists of golf tournaments I would like to win, and to win would do many things like kick start my season and boost my Ryder Cup chances.dddddddddddd” He noted an Irish winner would also cap a good week for Irish golf, with Royal Portrush added to the British Open rotation, and Rory McIlroy committing to representing Ireland at the 2016 Olympics. Ilonen confessed he wore an emerald-colored shirt to try and win over the large Irish crowds. The Finn could have easily finished two clear when his attempted eagle chip shot at 18 lipped out, leaving a three-footer for his birdie. “I decided to wear a green shirt today, and the fans were really pleased, but then I knew my course record wouldnt last long and I called that,” Ilonen said. “But I feel really comfortable out there, and really pleased to birdie 18, and get back the lead.” Willett recorded his second hole-in-one of the year, after one at the China Open. “It was a perfect number, wind out of the left with an 8-iron, kind of saying go in and not really quite sure, but it slam-dunked in the hole,” Willett said after his second 63 of the year. ’ ’ ’

LOS ANGELES — Don Mattingly will be back as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers next season with a new three-year contract that takes him through 2016, quieting speculation that his future with the club was somehow in doubt. A person familiar with the agreement, speaking on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized, said Mattingly is getting a raise from the $1.4 million he made last year. By comparison, Yankees manager Joe Girardi, entering his seventh season in New York, is starting a $16 million, four-year agreement after completing a $9 million, three-year deal. Mattingly had sought the stability of a multiyear deal. “I just want guys to know the organization has confidence in you is important to me as a manager,” he said by phone from his off-season home in Evansville, Ind. Mattingly has a 260-225 record in his first three seasons with the Dodgers, who reached the NL championship series this year, automatically triggering an extension of his contract that was set to expire at the end of last season. He was runner-up for NL Manager of the Year last season. Last winter, the Dodgers declined to exercise Mattinglys option for 2014, a move he believed portrayed him as a lame-duck in the clubhouse. In an awkward October news conference after the Dodgers were eliminated by St. Louis in the playoffs, Mattingly said the organization put him in a difficult position by not exercising the option. The front office didnt clarify his status for 2014 that day, which frustrated Mattingly. “I knew my contract had vested. I thought that at least that would have been said that day,” he said. “It kind of got left open and thats what got me going a little bit. If I had to do all over again, I would have preferred it to be in-house. I wish I had kept it inside and dealt with it face-to-face with those guys.” The next day, the team didnt pick up the contract option of coach Trey Hillman, who was Mattinglys right-hand man on the bench. Shortly thereafter, Mattingly spoke with majority owner Mark Walter and team president Stan Kasten, who let him know they wanted him back. “I was comfortable with where it was going to go,” Mattingly said. “I knew at that point wed get something done.” General manager Ned Colletti said the deal was mostly done three weeks ago, but the club waited until after a flurry of off-season signings and the holidays ended to announce it. “Its well-deserved,” he said. “The traits of the man are really work ethic and making sure he can be as successful as he can be and not leaving anything per chance. Thats one of the main reasons I hired him three years ago.” Mattingly began his career with the Dodgers in 2008 as a hitting coach under Joe Torre, who mentored Mattingly and endorsed him as a successor after Torre retired. NOTES: Colletti has talked to the representative of star pitcher Masahiro Tanaka and he said his camp is in a feeling-out process with all 30 MLB teams. The 30-day window to sign the 25-year-old Japanese right-hander ends on Jan. 24. … The team has talked to the agent of NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw, who is eligible for free agency after next season. “Its our desire to sign him here for a very long time,” Colletti said. … CF Matt Kemp is out of the walking boot that was on his sprained left ankle at the end of last season, and hes starting to hit. The Dodgers expect him to be ready by the middle of spring training. … Colletti would like to sign another infielder to give the team more versatility. … INF Dee Gordon is playing winter ball in Puerto Rico. … Pitchers Chad Billingsley and Scott Elbert wont return until midseason after recovering from Tommy John surgery. NEW ORLEANS – As All-Star festivities wrap up in New Orleans and the focus immediately shifts to Thursdays NBA trade deadline, Masai Ujiri is prepared for a busy week of fielding phone calls. “Ill be right here," he said pointing to his cell phone, “waiting and well see what happens.” “I never know what to expect,” Ujiri continued, speaking to TSN.ca ahead of Sundays All-Star game. “Sometimes its quiet until the last minute, sometimes its busy. As far as our team, I think the team has played well. They have done well with the platform so [well] keep trying to grow.” If the Raptors general manager is feeling any pressure to make a move ahead of the deadline, hes not showing it. Ujiri remains patient, committed to sustainable long-term growth and weary of disrupting the teams newfound chemistry, but he wouldnt rule out pulling the trigger on the right deal, if its out there. Despite his teams recent success, the plan hasnt changed and neither has his composure. “I always said since I came [to Toronto], the players will dictate where we go and the team will dictate where we go,” he stated. “Thats kind of how its been. So theyre growing and you want it that way.” Following a disappointing 6-12 start to the season, the Raptors have gone 21-12 since trading Rudy Gay to Sacramento on Dec. 9. Whats stood out to Ujiri, coach Dwane Casey, the players and anyone that has watched this team over the last two months is their on-court chemistry. Gays absence has allowed for a more cohesive offence, predicated on ball movement, which has allowed Kyle Lowry and Torontos young players to flourish. All four incoming players have contributed and the defence has improved. Still, not even the Raptors architect could have predicted such a quick turnaround. “We try to study [but] were not geniuses,” Ujiri admitted. “You have to get lucky sometimes and I think we were lucky. It kind of came together in terms of chemistry.” With 30 regular season games to go, the Raptors find themselves at the top of the Atlantic Division, third in the Eastern Conference. Theyre one game ahead of fourth-place Chicago and only 3.5 games separate them from Brooklyn, sitting in the seventh seed. Ujiri wont compromise the organizations future for instant gratification but he knows where they sit in the East and would consider adding another impact player as long as it doesnt derail their long-term flexibility. “I dont want to call out the conference,” he said, “I cant do that but its the measuring stick and I think we have to keep that in mind.” Lowry – a subject of trade rumours all season, the final year of his contract – has been a big part of the Raptors success and figures to be just as valuable to a their playoff cause. The question, as it has been for months is: Will he be around for the stretch run? “I hate to comment about any player in that way, but I think we are not good enough so you have to keep it open,” he responded. “Thats the honest answer. These guys have done pretty good. I know weve won a couple of games but we havent done anything yet.” Translation; there are no untradeable players on the roster, Lowry included. If the right offer comes along Lowry could be moved but the asking price is significant, as it should be. It should go without saying, but Ujiri wont be pressured into selling off Lowry or any of his assets simply to make a mid-season splash. Although previous regimes have fallen into that trap, the Raptors first-year GM will survey the field and go from there. His phone is on. His eyes and ears are open. OTTAWA — The Ottawa Senators were looking for a little redemption and Saturday night they were able to find it. Coming off an embarrassing 5-0 loss to the Boston Bruins on Friday night the Senators made the most of the rematch as they defeated the Bruins 4-3 at the Canadian Tire Centre. “Any time you drop a game like that and you get a chance for redemption and you dont take advantage of that things can spiral from there,” said Bobby Ryan. “Hopefully this is a building block.” Ryan was the games hero as he broke a 3-3 tie late in the third to give Ottawa the 4-3 lead. “We had it in our mind-set all night long that we were going to come out with two points (Saturday),” said Ryan. Patrick Wiercioch, Cory Conacher and Zack Smith also scored for the Senators (16-18-7). Craig Anderson stopped 29 shots to earn the victory. Daniel Paille, Jarome Iginla and David Warsofsky scored for the Bruins (26-11-2). Tuukka Rask allowed three goals on 12 shots before being replaced by Chad Johnson, who allowed one goal on 18 shots. Saturdays game marked the halfway mark of the season for the Senators, who continue to chase a playoff spot. Both teams were missing a number of key players, including their captains as Ottawa was without Jason Spezza and the Bruins were without Zdeno Chara. Both sat out with lower body injuries. The Senators got off to a strong start and managed to play well enough through 60 minutes to hold off the Bruins to the delight of the 20,500 on hand in Ottawa, but it didnt come easily. Smith was called for a faceoff violation with 1:51 remaining in regulation, leaving Ottawa shorthanded but with a 4-3 lead. Still, the Senators managed to hold off the hard-pressing Bruins and earn the win. “You never want to put your team in that position, but I had faith in the guys killing and obviously Anderson was playing very well,” said Smith. “That was a tough one to take. Its not a call thats called consistently so I think someone has to get on the same page about that one. If theyre going to call it they have to call it all the time I think.” Anderson was solid as the Senators held off the Bruins and when asked what it was like to face the onslaught he replied, “exhausting.” “They had a 6-on-4 there and they were moving the puck pretty good and we got a couple of key blocks and that was the difference,” said Anderson. “When youre out-manned like that anything can happen.” Anderson admitted the team wasnt feeling very good after Fridays loss and says the fact they were able to rebound with a win shows a lot of character. “Its all about how you respond,” said Anderson. “Its not about what happens to you its how you respond and I think we came out here and we responded in the right way. Now the key is we have to respond again going forward.” Ryan scored the winner at 15:25 of the third after forcing a turnover at the Ottawa blue-line and breaking in alone, beating Johnson with a high backhand. Earlier, the Senators caught a break when what would have been Iginlas second of the night was reviewed and ruled to be kicked in, keeping the game tied 3-3. Iginla admitted he wasnt all that surprised that the goal was called back. “I didnt really expect it to be a goal,” said Iginla. “I knew (the puck) was coming to my foot, but I was hoping it wasnt a kicking motion. At the same time I understand the call, but youre always hoping for the best for sure.” Bruins coach Claude Julien said his team played well and probably deserved a better fate. “Our guys battled hard,” said Julien. "It would have been nice to come out of here with at least a point. I thought we deserved that much with how hard we competed to get ourselves back in the game, but unfortunately that wasnt the case. " Ottawa opened the scoring at the seven-minute mark of the first as Wiercioch jumped into the play to grab a rebound and beat Rask through the legs. The Bruins tied the game on Pailles fourth of the season as he sidestepped Erik Karlsson along the sideboards and beat Anderson cleanly. Conacher made it 2-1 for the Senators when he tipped a Kyle Turris backhand. The Senators made it 3-1 just 29 seconds into the second on Smiths short-handed goal. It also marked the end of Rasks night. Anderson made a number of good saves through the second, but had no chance on Iginlas 12th of the season as he was left all alone at the side of the net for an easy tap in. Warsofsky, with his first in the NHL, tied it 3-3 at the six-minute mark of the third with a shot from the side boards. Notes: C Jason Spezza and D Chris Phillips missed the game with a lower body injury. In Spezza and Phillips absence Kyle Turris and Erik Karlsson wore an A. D Eric Gryba was a healthy scratch for the Senators. a The Bruins announced D Dennis Seidenberg will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. D Zdeno Chara was a late scratch and is listed as day-to-day. The Bruins were also without C Carl Soderberg. D Zach Trotman was recalled on an emergency basis and made his NHL debut. Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week they discuss their best of the year. Bruce Arthur, National Post: My thumb is up to the end of the NHL lockout. After months of labour war, wed spent a week freezing on some of the finest sidewalks New York had to offer, staking out meetings that produced nothing much. And then on Jan. 5 the NHL walked to the players hotel for what was described as an informal meeting, starting at one in the afternoon. It didnt stop. Midnight arrived, and the meeting kept going. At 4am I closed my eyes for 15 seconds and Aaron Ward took a picture. And finally, at five in the morning the news broke: Labour peace was at hand, and a voice exiting the room bellowed out, this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. For ending something thats the opposite of sports, thats my moment of the year. Steve Simmons, SUN Media: My thumb is up to the least natural sporting emotion of 2013 – caring about the Davis Cup. Most of us couldnt tell you when the Davis Cup begins, when it ends, how the schedule works or who plays who, but Milos Raonic and Canadian tennis changed all that this past year. Suddenly we were pulled in by possibility, by Raonics huge first serve, by the fortitude of Vasek Pospisil, by the stoic veteran Daniel Nestor, all of them coming together in red and white as a team. Our team. They didnt win the Davis Cup but did what no Canadians had ever done before. They made the semi-finals. In a way it was the perfect Canadian ending: We played hard, we played great, we inspired, we just didnt win. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is up to the Iron Bowl, proof that one second can last for eternity. The improbable finish started with that single tick Alabama coach Nick Saban lobbied to have put back on the scoreboard. Rather than take his chances in overtime, Saban sent out a back-up kicker to attempt a quixotic 57-yard game-winning field goal. Auburns Chris Davis took the failed kick deep in the end zone and juked and then sprinted more than 100 yards – straight into the hard drive of memory. In-state rival Auburn deprived Alabama of a third straight national championship with Davis return while reminding us that sport is the grand unscripted drama of our lives. Dave Hodge, TSN: Well if that defied belief, my thumb is up to the current NFL season, which has done that… right from the start when Peyton Manning tossed seven touchdown passes, only to have Nick Foles of the Eagles do the same thing later on. Matt Prater broke a record with a 64-yard field goal at the end of the first half, but Justin Tuckers 61-yarder might have been more amazing, because it came at the end of the game. One week, the NFL set a record with 90 touchdowns. The next week, it set a record for one-day scoring with 763 points. Phillys LeSean McCoy rushed for 217 yards in the snow, and Kansas Citys Jamaal Charles, another running back, caught four passes for touchdowns. NFL stadiums have scoreboards, and the busier they are, the better the games tend to be – never truer than in 2013. . Too many on Clint Dempsey, says U.S. coach Juergen Klinsmann. But the league decided that Dempsey was the trouble-maker not the victim when it suspended the Seattle Sounders star striker two games Friday for “violent conduct” against Toronto FC defender Mark Bloom. The incident happened off the ball in the 40th minute of Torontos 2-1 win in Seattle last Saturday. Dempsey swung an arm and caught Bloom in the groin. The U.S. international was also fined an undisclosed amount. Klinsmann stepped in after the game, saying MLS has to offer key players like Dempsey more protection. “Obviously we are a little bit worried about Clint Dempsey getting fouled I dont know how many times in this game against Toronto,” he said in a U.S. Soccer video. Toronto committed 25 fouls compared to 15 for Seattle. “Im hoping MLS is having an eye on that … What I saw there on the weekend there were certain things not within the rules any more,” Klinsmann added. “So I hope that our players in a certain way get a little bit of protection because they need to be healthy going into this World Cup.” Seattle was also the victim of 25 fouls in its season-opening win over Sporting Kansas City. Asked about the Klinsmann comments on protecting stars, Toronto FC manager Ryan Nelsen stuck his tongue firmly in his cheek. “I 100 per cent agree with him,” he said. “Jermain Defoe, Michael Bradley and Gilberto should be left alone, they shouldnt be allowed to tackle them.” “I think theres a hidden agenda with Juergens comments,” he added. Bradley, a veteran U.S. international whose father Bob Bradley used to coach the American national team, also downplayed the issue. “Its a physical league for sure but when youu look around the world, all the best games are physical,” he said.dddddddddddd "Theyre hard, Teams compete at the highest level. For us, when we look back at last weekend, we feel like we played hard, we competed hard, we left everything we had on the field but in an honest, fair way. “And so I think, after the fact, for people to look and to start to talk about a play here, a play there, lets be honest, theres little plays like this that go in every game. And still when you look back at 90 minutes, I think the way that we were able to get after Seattle and make the game hard on them and really win the physical battles was something we want to take forward into this game (Saturday against D.C, United) as well.” Seattle coach Sigi Schmid didnt offer much on the suspension in an interview posted on the club website. “It is what it is so we have to deal with it,” he said. Dempsey is eligible to return for an April 5 road game in Portland. The MLS disciplinary committee also suspended Chicago Fire defender Lovel Palmer for two games and fined him an undisclosed amount for violent conduct toward Portland Timbers forward Maximiliano Urruti last weekend. Both Dempsey and Palmer submitted appeals that were turned down. Montreal Impact midfielder Justin Mapp was also fined an undisclosed amount for simulation in a game against the Houston Dynamo. New York Red Bulls defender Armando was banned one game and fined an undisclosed amount for serious foul play against Colorado Rapids forward Deshorn Brown. Prior to the start of the season, the leagues board of governors approved a policy stating that any player receiving a red card for violent conduct or adjudged unanimously by the discipline committee to be an unequivocal red card for violent conduct will be automatically suspended for at least two games and be fined. ’ ’ ’

The Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues all augmented their free agent classes by signing some European free agents. Numbers Game examines the signings of Petri Kontiola, Leo Komarov, Jiri Sekac and Jori Lehtera. The Maple Leafs Sign: C Petri Kontiola and LW Leo Komarov. Komarov is a familiar face for the Maple Leafs, a 27-year-old winger who was a regular in the Leafs lineup in 2012-2013 before returning to the KHL for a nice payday last season. Komarov had a strong year in the KHL, with Moscow Dynamo, leading the team with 34 points in 52 games, and he played for Finland in both the Olympics and the World Championships. Komarov didnt score much in his first go-round with the Leafs, tallying nine points in 42 games, but there may be more offence to his game than that. Usage would play a big part in whether or not Komarov is ever a factor offensively, but hes being brought back to Toronto more for his attitude than production. Komarov is a relentless pest, who hits a lot and gets under opponents skin. To his credit, he did have solid relative possession stats for the Leafs a couple of years ago. Heres the issue with Komarov, though. If he is capable of contributing offensively, and could fill a top-nine role, then it could justify the four-year, $11.8-million contract he received. If hes the same energetic fourth-liner that he was a couple of years ago — a distinct possibility — then hes vastly overpaid. Kontiola is a 29-year-old who was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2004 and played a dozen games with the Blackhawks in 2007-2008, registering five assists and, in that small sample, putting up great possession stats. In two AHL seasons, Kontiola scored 140 points in 159 (regular season plus playoff) games, before heading to the KHL, where he has scored 152 points in 204 games over the past four seasons, the last three with Chelyabinsk Traktor. He had 14 points in 16 games playing for Finland at the Olympics and in the World Championships. With that track record, its possible that Kontiola could contribute some offence for the Maple Leafs but, as a 29-year-old who has barely seen NHL action, he could also be a spare part. The good news is that, signed to a contract for $1.1-million for one season, hes a low-risk investment. If he wins a spot in the lineup and contributes, they can work on an extension; if he doesnt, no big deal. The Canadiens Sign: RW Jiri Sekac. 22-year-old Jiri Sekac was suddenly a hot name on the free agent market this spring after a nice season in the KHL, scoring 11 goals and 28 points in 47 games for Prague Lev, leading his team in points per game (0.60). As a junior, Sekac played a little in North America, earning zero points in eight games with the Peterborough Petes of the OHL as a 17-year-old before joining Youngstown of the USHL, where he scored 56 points in 96 games. Understandably, with that production, he wasnt considered a hot NHL prospect and went to the KHL, where he scored 21 points in 83 games over two seasons before breaking out last season. Signed for two years, at an entry-level of max of $925,000 per season (plus bonuses), Sekac is rapidly-improving and his potential drew lots of interest throughout the league, but it would be premature — considering hes had basically one productive scoring season in three years — to put big expectations on his scoring significantly for Montreal next season. However, if Sekac found a spot in Montreals top nine, maybe he could contribute some offence as a rookie. The Blues Sign: C Jori Lehtera. Lehtera, 26, was a third-round pick of the Blues in 2008 and has played all of 14 (regular season plus playoff games) in North America since, managing three points with Peoria in the 2008-2009 season. Since then, however, Lehtera has been very productive as a playmaking centre. In the past three seasons, playing for Novosibirsk Sibir in the KHL, Lehtera has tallied 39 goals and 118 points in 125 games (with zero goals and eight points in 13 playoff games). The 6-foot-2 centre had 12 points in 10 games at the World Championships this year, as well as four points in six games at the Olympics, not looking the least bit out of place against high-level competition. Coming to North America may require some adjustment, but Lehtera is going to have an opportunity to put up points right out of the game, slated to skate on the Blues second line with Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko on his wings. With quality playing time on a strong team, Lehtera could make an impact right away. 50 points seems a reasonable expectation, but theres upside beyond that if he can make a smooth transition. Lehtera is signed for two years, at a total cost of $5.5-million, a very reasonable price if he ends up fulfilling a top-six role for the Blues. His presence, along with Paul Stastny, allows the Blues to move David Backes and Patrik Berglund to the wing, giving the team outstanding depth up front. Joseph was San Antonio top draft pick last year, but the 20-year-old point guard has a lot of learning to do before he gets a regular shift with the Spurs. And the Toronto native knows it. Joseph, who would be in his sophomore year if he had continued playing college basketball at Texas, already has spent eight days with Austin in the NBA Development League in January during this lockout-shortened season. It wouldnt be surprising if he returns there for more playing time. “The speed of the game is a step faster than in college,” Joseph said after Wednesdays 113-106 win over the Toronto Raptors. “With the 24-second shot clock its a lot, you have to adjust much quicker.” While Joseph doesnt play much, he watches and learns from the Spurs all-star point guard Tony Parker. Watching power forward and team leader Tim Duncan also is educational. “Its an adjustment,” Joseph said. “I know its bigger than me, its a team thing and I just have to stay mentally ready.” He is working with one of the NBAs top coaches in San Antonios Gregg Popovich. “Hes a high character young man,” Popovich said. “Hes got a great work ethic and he wants to learn and he will learn. Hes an easy person to have on the team.” Joseph said he vvalued his short time in the D-League.dddddddddddd “I didnt look at the D-League as a bad thing,” he said. "Pop told me just to go down there and get some minutes and get some game experience. We only had a week of training camp and not a lot of practices. “Everybody looks at the D-League like its a bad thing but Austin was a good thing for me. They have a great coaching staff there. There are ex-NBA players and people with potential to be NBA players so it was good.” Joseph had only one chance to play on Wednesday, coming in with 3:20 play in second quarter when he replaced Parker for nearly three minutes. He has been averaging about seven minutes a game. “He probably just needs a chance to play,” Popovich said. “Hell probably have more time in the D-League at some point this year Im sure to give him that time, to get that experience.” Joseph spent his first two years in high school in Pickering, Ont. After leading Pickering to two consecutive provincial championships he moved to Henderson, Nev., where he attended Findlay Prep for the next two years. He was joined there by forward Tristan Thompson of Brampton, Ont. Both went on to Texas. Thompson was drafted in the first round, and fourth overall, last year by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Joseph was taken 29th overall. ’ ’ ’

The league also said the banned owner has engaged in other conduct that has impaired its relationship with fans and merchandising partners. “All of these acts provide grounds for termination under several provisions of the NBA constitution and related agreements,” the league said in a statement. Sterling was banned for life and fined $2.5 million by Commissioner Adam Silver after the release of a recording in which he made racist remarks. He has until May 27 to respond to the charge, and the right to appear at the hearing and make a presentation before the board of governors. He has the right to a lawyer at the hearing, but strict courtroom rules of evidence would not apply. Sterlings attorney, Maxwell Blecher, asked for a three-month delay in response to the charge, a person with knowledge of the situation said, confirming a report by SI.com. The league will not grant it, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no official comments were authorized. Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, the board chairman, will preside over the hearing in New York, which is planned for two days before the start of the NBA Finals. If three-fourths of the other 29 owners vote to sustain the charge, Sterling will be forced to sell the team he has owned since 1981. Silver has said he is confident he has the 23 votes that are necessary. Sterling told a female friend, V. Stiviano, not to bring blacks to Clippers games during their conversation that was recorded. Sterling specifically mentioned Magic Johnson, then criticized the NBA Hall of Famer again as a poor role model during a recent interview with CNN. “Among other things, Mr. Sterling disparaged African-Americans and minorities; directed a female acquaintance not to associate publicly with African-Americans or to bring African-Americans to Clippers games; and criticized African-Americans for not supporting their communities,” the NBA said. The league also charged Sterling with destroying evidence and providing false and misleading evidence to the NBA investigator, and said the Clippers issued a false and misleading mediia statement about the matter.dddddddddddd It also cited “a failure to use best efforts to see to it that the sport of professional basketball is conducted according to the highest moral and ethical standards.” Article 13 of the NBAs constitution, which deals with termination of ownership, states that one condition is if an owner fails or refuses “to fulfil its contractual obligations to the Association, its members, players, or any other third party in such a way as to affect the Association or its members adversely.” A number of sponsors suspended their deals with the Clippers in the wake of Sterlings remarks, potentially hurting league revenues, and players have said they would consider refusing to play next season if he still owned the team. “Mr. Sterlings actions and positions significantly undermine the NBAs efforts to promote diversity and inclusion; damage the NBAs relationship with its fans; harm NBA owners, players and Clippers team personnel; and impair the NBAs relationship with marketing and merchandising partners, as well as with government and community leaders,” the league said. If Sterling did not respond to the charge within five business days, or does not appear at the hearing, it would be deemed an admission of the “total validity of the charges as presented,” according to the constitution. But even the players who want him out believe Sterling will fight, and his attorney sent a letter to the league last week informing it that Sterling wouldnt be paying the fine. A message on the office voicemail of Blecher said he would have no comment now. Sterlings estranged wife, Shelly, has said she will fight to keep her 50 per cent share of the team even if Donald Sterling is forced to sell, but the league said in its statement that “all ownership interests in the Clippers will be terminated” if the charge is upheld. Shelly Sterlings attorney, Pierce ODonnell, said he was reviewing the charges. “Based on our initial assessment, we continue to believe there is no lawful basis for stripping Shelly Sterling of her 50 per cent ownership interest in the Clippers,” ODonnell said in a statement Monday. “She is the innocent estranged spouse. We also continue to hope that we can resolve this dispute with the NBA for the good of all constituencies.” ’ ’ ’

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks top pitching prospect Archie Bradley has a strained elbow and will rest his arm for two weeks before beginning a throwing program. The team placed Bradley, who has been pitching for Triple-A Reno, on the seven-day disabled list Tuesday with a mild flexor strain in his right elbow. The hard-throwing 21-year-old right-hander is considered one of the top young pitchers in the minor leagues and it was widely expected he would be called up by the major league club this season. Bradley, the seventh overall pick in the 2011 draft, struggled in Reno, going 1-4 with a 5.18 ERA. Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said results of the MRI and CAT scan on Monday were “good news” because the problem is not that serious. “The key thing is, structurally he is fine,” Towers said. "Most of our pitchers have some sort of discomfort when they throw. Small tears. Thats just the wear and tear of throwing the ball 90-plus every fifth day for a whole season. " Towers said that hopefully the swelling subsides in a couple of weeks and “he doesnt have the issue any more. I wouldnt be surprised at some point in his career he has tenderness in his elbow. That happens with pitchers.” . 1 overall pick likes best about football. “Big hits,” he said. “Im all about hitting. NEW YORK — The pitching-poor Texas Rangers plan to add right-hander Jerome Williams and will start him Friday night against AL West-leading Oakland. The Rangers announced after Thursdays 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees that they would purchase Williams contract from Triple-A Round Rock. The 32-year-old Williams was released by Houston earlier this month after going 1-4 with a 6.04 ERA in 26 relief appearances. He signed with Texas and went 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA in two starts at Triple-A. Williams is 43-51 with a 4.45 ERA in nine seasons with San Francisco, the Cubs, Washington, the Angels and Astros. Texas has a 4.84 ERA, the highest in the AL and almost a half-run over anyone else in the league. The Rangers have the worst record in the majors, and set a big league record by using 30 pitchers before the All-Star break. Theyve already tied a team mark for most pitchers in a season, and they added another newcomer to the roster before Thursdays game by promoting reliever Nate Adcock from Triple-A. NEW YORK — Masahiro Tanaka has been every bit the ace the New York Yankees went shopping for last winter. Tanaka pitched a four-hitter for his first major league shutout and the Yankees got home runs from Yangervis Solarte and Mark Teixeira on Wednesday night, snapping a four-game skid with a 4-0 victory over the Mets. “Overall, I think that today was my best day,” Tanaka said through a translator. Brian Roberts tripled twice and the Yankees finally beat their crosstown rivals after dropping six straight meetings. The Mets took all four Subway Series games last year and won two slugfests in the Bronx this week. Back home at spacious Citi Field, however, their bats went silent again. “You asked me about the home run barrage? We hit three of them tonight. They were just in the wrong park,” manager Terry Collins said about spacious Citi Field. Tanaka (6-0) overwhelmed the Mets with his vast assortment of pitches while spoiling Rafael Monteros big league debut. Montero, the latest to arrive in a line of touted Mets pitching prospects, threw six competitive innings but was no match for the $155 million rookie from Japan. “In some ways, this is a David-and-Goliath matchup. One guys never lost and the other guys never pitched,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said before the game. “So, its interesting. Well see how many rocks Rafaels got.” Not enough. Tanaka is 34-0 combined in Japan and North America over his last 42 regular-season starts. He did lose Game 6 of the Japan Series last year — before earning a save in Game 7. “I just go up there and basically try to win every single game,” Tanaka said. The right-hander struck out eight and walked none, throwing 114 pitches during his first complete game in the majors. He lowered his ERA to 2.17 and gave the Yankees taxed bullpen a much-needed break. “I knew what was coming, but I couldnt hit it,” Daniel Murphy said. “Hes commanding all his pitches to all zones. The splitter is the equalizer. You dont see it that much, someone using it in any count like that.” Tanaka became the first Yankees rookie to begin his career 6-0 as a starter since Hall of Famer Whitey Ford went 9-0 in 1950. That sort of dependability has been sorely needed, with the Yankees already missing CC Sabathia and two other injured starters. “Hes been special,” manager Joe Girardi said. Tanaka even singled in the ninth inning for his first major league hit — giving him one more than Mets pitchers have in 64 at-bats this season. Asked what the highlight of the night was for him, Tanaka smiled. “The first hit,” he said, kidding. Girardi said Tanakas teammates “loved it” and gave the pitcher some good-natured ribbing. “When you look at it, hes not that far removed from hitting,” Girardi said. “Hes got an idea. He wears a shin guard.” Montero (0-1) allowed three runs and five hits. He struck out three and walked two after getting called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to step into the rotation slot previously held by Jenrry Mejia, who was moved to the bullpen. The slim right-hander fanned Derek Jeter in the third for his first strikeout, but was hurt by his defence an inning earlier. With a runner on first and Tanaka on deck, left fielder Eric Young Jr. made an ill-advised dive in trying to catch Roberts sinking liner with two outs. The ball got past Young and to the wall, allowing Solarte to score as Roberts cruised into third with his first triple. Solarte, the ALs leading hitter, sent a solo homer to right in the fourth. He has 23 RBIs in his rookie season, tops on the team. “He just keeps thrilling us all, in a sense,” Girardi said. Teixeira lifted Monteros second pitch of the sixth to right-centre for his eighth home run and seventh in his last 15 games. Jeters infield single, a dribbler that barely travelled 20 feet out in front of home plate, scored Brett Gardner in the seventh. “I knew that we were in a little funk, losing four in a row, and I also knew that we hadnt won a Subway Series in a while. So yes, I did want to go out there and try to get a win for us,” Tanaka said. NOTES: Yankees RF Carlos Beltran (right elbow) was still unavailable but reserve outfielder Ichiro Suzuki (back) was feeling better, Girardi said. … Sabathia had his sore right knee drained and the Yankees hope he can return as soon as his 15-day stint on the disabled list is up, Girardi said. Sabathia was examined by Dr. James Andrews and is receiving treatment. … The Mets plan to commemorate Jeters final regular-season Subway Series game Thursday. The Denver Nuggets played as though they were already relaxing on a tropical beach. Love started practicing early for All-Star festivities, making six of 11 shots from 3-point range and totalling 32 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Timberwolves to a 117-90 victory over the Nuggets on Wednesday night.Arsenal and Everton drew 1-1 on Sunday in a fantastic back-and-forth match between two teams high on style. Both sides passed the ball with confidence, and despite only coming away with a point, Evertons confidence will get a massive boost from having played so well at The Emirates Stadium. One of the talking points during the game was how high Arsenal were defending wide free kicks. The game commentator said it was a dangerous tactic from the Gunners, as it invited the ball to be played in behind the defenders. I disagree, for a number of reasons. 1. The goalkeeper needs space if he is to come and attack the ball. It is essential for the defenders to set a defensive line that gives the goalkeeper enough room to come and claim the ball if (when) it comes into the penalty area. It is a fine balancing act, though, and this is something that Arsenal do exceptionally well. In the 15th minute, Everton had a wide free kick. Arsenal have not yet picked up their defensive marks in this picture, but it indicates just how high they are prepared to hold their line. They are not even ten yards from the line of the ball, and when the ball is played short by Everton, they are quick to react and force the ball away from goal. Wojciech Szczesny has the entire penalty area to come and claim the ball if it is flighted into the box, which is all that he can ask for – an excellent example of a well-organized defensive line from Arsenal. 2. Defenders need to be ball-side, goal-side. By this, I mean that good defenders are always in a position where they are favourite to win the ball if it is played in behind them, and can also get a challenge in if the ball is played into the attackers feet. When defending wide free kicks, it is imperative for the defender to be ball-side, goal-side. You do this by ensuring that you are “touch-tight,” meaning that you are close enough to touch the attacker, and closer to your goal than the attacker.dddddddddddd With a more central free kick, Arsenal still hold a very high line; they are inviting Everton to play the ball into the penalty area. But because they are ball-side, goal-side, they are favourites to win the ball when it comes into the area. The one Everton attacker that is in behind the defensive line is in an offside position, and must come back onside before the ball is kicked. At this point, the Arsenal defenders must get ball-side, goal-side, or they run the risk of being second favourite to win the ball. 3. If the defensive line is set too deep, the goalkeeper cannot react to a header or deflection. This point was perfectly exemplified in Canadas 2-0 loss to the Czech Republic in November. Canadas defensive line was set so deep, that goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld could do nothing about the first goal, scored in just the third minute of the game. Look at how deep the Canadian defensive line is (in red). When the ball is flighted to the near post, Marcel de Jong is out-jumped by Ondrej Celustka, who heads the ball past Hirschfeld. The goal could have easily been prevented had Canada held a more aggressive defensive line nearer the 18-yard line. If the ball is floated in behind the defensive line, it is a much easier play for Hirschfeld to make. Being a good defender is about assessing, prioritizing and mitigating risk. You always want to be in a position where you are favourite to win the ball if it comes into the most dangerous area – which is generally closer to your goal. But there is no hard and fast rule when it comes to your distances from the ball, when to drop in and when to hold your line. That is down to the judgment of the players, who must make those decisions based on their individual and collective skill sets. The best teams, like Arsenal at this point in time, are exceptionally well-organized and consistently make the right decisions as a group when defending. ’ ’ ’

Great news for NCAA fans in Canada, as 16 of the 35 bowl games this season can be found on TSN, TSN2 or TSN1050 (and in some cases multiple platforms). All of the games arent created equal and with bowl season kicking off Saturday with the first four matchups, its time to rank them from best to “35th most exciting.” 1. BCS National Championship – Florida State vs Auburn (January 6th, 8:30 on TSN and TSN1050)The easiest decision on the list sees #1 and #2 in the BCS fighting for the National Championship. The only remaining FCS undefeated team in the Seminoles takes on the biggest Cinderella story college football has seen in years in the Auburn Tigers. If watching the two best teams of the season battle for the crystal trophy isnt enough, tune in for a chance to watch Heisman trophy winner Jameis Winston cap off his freshman season. 2. Rose Bowl – Michigan State vs Stanford (January 1st, 5:00 on TSN2)The granddaddy of them all takes place on a loaded New Years Day and features two of the best defenses in the country. Stanford came out of the difficult Pac-12 while Michigan State ended Ohio States title hopes to win the BIG 10. If you love smash mouth football this is the game for you. 3. Valero Alamo Bowl – Texas vs Oregon (December 30th, 6:45 on TSN1050)This game shot up my list the minute Mack Brown announced it would be his last game on the sidelines for the Longhorns. After a storied career that included a national championship hell step down after this game. Texas has a chance to win one for their coach against a very talented Oregon team that may not be excited to be playing in the Alamo bowl after opening the season with national championship hopes. Still, this game has intriguing storylines and talent all over the field its a must-see game. 4. Orange Bowl – Ohio State vs Clemson (January 3rd, 8:30 on TSN2 and TSN1050)Ohio State had the inside track to the title game before losing to Michigan State in the BIG 10 Championship. Clemson had their championship hopes dashed earlier in the year when they fell, and fell hard against Florida State. Even though both teams had higher hopes, theyll both be out to win a very competitive BCS bowl game against a similar style team. Neither defense is very imposing this season, and both offences are incredible. Braxton Miller facing off with Tajh Boyd could be the best QB battle of the bowl season. 5. Chick-Fil-A Bowl – Texas A&M vs Duke (January 31st, 8:00)Johnny Manziel is expected to bolt to the NFL after this game, so its the last chance to see one of colleges most electric players put on a show. Its ironic that a player with red flags for off-field partying issues will ring in the New Year trying to hang points on what should be an over-matched Duke squad. The Blue Devils enjoyed their most successful football season ever, but did it in a weak ACC and were exposed against FSU in the conference title game. Theyll look to bounce back and prove they belong amongst college footballs semi-elite. 6. All-State Sugar Bowl – Alabama vs Oklahoma (January 2nd, 8:30 on TSN2 and TSN1050)Nick Saban signed an extension thatll pay him nearly $7 million a season to roam the sidelines in Tuscaloosa. He can start to earn some of that coin with a victory over Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. The Crimson Tide may have missed out on a chance on a third straight national championship but adding to their recent resume with a win in this game would still be a great coup. Its also the last chance to watch Heisman runner-up AJ Mccarron before he graduates and heads to the NFL. 7. Fiesta Bowl – Baylor vs UCF (January 1st, 8:30, TSN2 or TSN1050)Both of these teams over-achieved and find themselves in a BCS bowl for the first time. Interesting story line to follow for this one is Bears head coach Art Briles who has been linked to gigs with Texas and in the NFL with the Washington Redskins despite signing an extension this year. Its a last audition for him to show off his exciting and productive offence. QB Bryce Petty has decided to come back next year, but watching him and RB Lache Seastrunk alone makes this appointment viewing. 8. AT&T Cotton Bowl – Missouri vs Oklahoma State (January 3rd, 1:00)Missouri lost their chance at the title game when they took their second loss of the season in the SEC championship game. Oklahoma State missed their chance at a Big 12 crown when they lost their finale to Oklahoma. Despite both teams coming in after taking an “L” they both had incredible years and should match-up to provide some entertainment in a battle of programs trending in the right direction. 9. Capital One Bowl – South Carolina vs Wisconsin (January 1st, 1:00)Jadeveon Clowney has his last chance to impress NFL scouts on a football field before turning pro after what was a disappointing campaign. He is still a freak, and properly motivated could provide viewers with quite the show. On the other side will be a Wisconsin team that would like to be playing in a different New Years Day game but should still be very motivated to knock off a tough SEC opponent. RBs Melvin Gordon and James White both ran for over 1,000 yards and are among the best tandems in college football. Itll be interesting to see how those two avoid Clowney on the other side of the ball. 10. Russell Athletic Bowl – Louisville vs Miami (December 28th, 6:45)QB Teddy Bridgewater claims he hasnt made up his mind regarding leaving college for the pro game, but make no mistake hes leaving Louisville after this bowl game. Much like Clowney and a few others vying for the number one draft slot its his last on-field chance to make a statement. Miami could prove to be a worthy foe; they were a top-10 program before getting slammed by FSU. 11. Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl – Fresno State vs USC (December 21, 3:30)The best game of the opening day sees QB Derek Carr of Fresno State take on the Trojans who will be auditioning for new coach Steve Sarkisian. While USC wont have their new boss on the sidelines, its always added incentive for players when they know their new coach is taking notes. As for Carr, this is the 3rd straight game on the list that has a top-tier NFL draft prospect stating his case. Carrs brother David was a number-one selection, and while Derek may not go that high he does have the chance to be the first QB off the board. 12. Taxslayer.com Bowl – Georgia vs Nebraska (January 1st, Noon)There are a few SEC versus BIG 10 matchups this bowl season. Bo Pelini may be coaching for his job for the Cornhuskers, and hes also coaching to give some respect to the BIG 10. A win in this game would go a long way for the conference in their bid to shake the “down” label. One player to watch is RB Todd Gurley for Georgia, watch for him to pick up the slack with QB Aaron Murray out due to injury. 13. Outback Bowl – LSU vs Iowa (January 1st, 1:00 on TSN2)This game features an SEC team with an injured QB taking on a BIG 10 program fighting for respect. Its crazy how similar this game is to the Taxslayer.com bowl. Iowas defense has a chance to keep them in this one, and with QB Zach Mettenberger out, LSU may struggle to score points. This game has a chance to be a defensive battle, but that doesnt mean it wont be fun to watch. 14. Poinsetta Bowl – Northern Illinois vs Utah State (December 26th, 9:30 on TSN1050)Huskies QB Jordan Lynch was a Heisman nominee and one of the few players in the country you must watch. He plays in the MAC which doesnt receive much attention but his game is definitely worth enjoying. His combination of pass/rush is very unique and very successful. He is similar to Ohio State QB Braxton Miller, but plays for a team that relies on him much more. 15. Hawaii Bowl – Boise State vs Oregon State (December 24th, 8:00 on TSN2 and TSN1050)When youre done with dinner on Christmas Eve cozy up by the fire place and turn on the television to watch these two programs do battle. Much like USC, the Broncos will be out auditioning for a new head coach after Chris Petersen bolted to Washington. 16. Sun Bowl – UCLA vs Virginia Tech (December 31st, 2:00)UCLA QB Brett Hundley may head to the NFL after this one and he may go with a prominent agent. Hundleys father joked about a meeting with JAY-Z saying if they were going to meet he wanted Beyonce in the room. Sounds funny, but with a big performance in this one its all but a done deal Hundley moves on. For those who love coaching controversy UCLAs Jim Mora has been rumored as an option at Texas. A big win here could keep his name in those discussions. 17. Pinstripe Bowl – Rutgers vs Notre Dame (December 28th, Noon)Sometimes the venue alone is reason to watch a game and thats the case with the Pinstripe Bowl which is held at Yankee Stadium. Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees will play his final game against an awful pass defense that ranked 120th in the country and Vegas expects a big performance – the Fighting Irish are currently more than two touchdown favorites. 18. Advocare V100 Bowl – Arizona vs Boston College (December 31st, 12:30)Kadeem Carey of Arizona and Andre Williams of Boston College are the two of the best backs in the country. Williams rushed for 2,102 yards which was tops in the FBS, while Carey took top spot back in 2012. The passing games may not be on display in this one, but the running attacks make it worth tuning in for. 19. Holiday Bowl – Arizona State vs Texas Tech (December 30th, 10:50 on TSN1050)Todd Graham won Pac-12 coach of the year and Red Raiders HC Kliff Kingsbury is one of the fastest rising bosses in the NCAA. Arizona State enters having won seven straight while Texas Tech has lost five in a row after starting with seven straight wins. Two top-20 offenses could light up the scoreboard and provide one of the most exciting bowl games on the schedule. 20. Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl – Michigan vs Kansas State (December 28, 10:15)This has been billed as a battle of two teams in a rebuilding year – but dont buy that story. Michigan wasnt rebuilding, they underachieved and suffered five losses under third year coach Brady Hoke. On the positive side, the Wolverines came within a two-point conversion of winning “The Game” against Ohio State. Its been Jeckyl and Hyde for Michigan this season and its anyones guess which team will show up for this one. Two bright spots are QB Devin Gardner and WR Jeremy Gallon. Kansas State looks for their first bowl win since 2002. 21. Fight Hunger Bowl – BYU vs Washington (December 27th, 9:30)Steve Sarkisian is out as Huskies coach after taking over the USC Trojans program but Washington arguably upgraded landing Chris Petersen. He wont be on the sidelines but hell have eyes on this tilt which sees two top-15 offences do battle at AT&T Park in San Francisco. QB Keith Price and RB Bishop Sankey of Washington are two key players to watch in this one. 22. Music City Bowl – Ole Miss vs Georgia Tech (December 30th, 3:15)Ole Miss has won their last five bowl games but enter this one on a two-game losing streak. They failed to score 10 points in both of those losses and may have a tough time putting up points against the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech will run the ball to eat clock using the triple-option before sending out the nations 21st ranked defence. QB Bo Wallace will need to have a strong performance for Ole Miss to make it six straight bowl wins. 23. BBVA Compass Bowl – Houston vs Vanderbilt (January 4th, 1:00, TSN2)HC James Franklin has Vandy trending in the right direction with 17 wins in the last two seasons. To put how big of an accomplishment that is into perspective, its the first time ever the program is heading to a bowl game for a third straight year. They won their final four games, while Houston lost three of four4 heading into bowl season. The Cougars will lean on their 16th ranked defense to keep this one close. 24. Belk Bowl – Cincinnati vs North Carolina (December 28th, 3:20)UNC let the fans pick their uniforms for this one, which is cool and gives me a reason to tune in. If youre looking for something a little deeper the atmosphere should be great with North Carolina playing only 140 miles from Chapel Hill. On the other side of the field theyll see a Bearcats team thats been here before; they won the Belk Bowl last season. 25. Little Caesars Pizza Bowl – Bowling Green vs Pittsburgh (December 26th, 6:00)Bowling Green won the MAC title upending Jordan Lynch and the Huskies in the title game at Ford Field, and now they find themselves back in Detroit. They average 14.8 points allowed per game which is fifth-best in the FBS. Pitt boasts Senior Aaron Donald who won defensive player of the year. 26. New Mexico Bowl – Washington State vs Colorado State (December 21st, 2:00 on TSN2 and TSN1050) Colorado State will go as far as RB Kapri Bibbs takes them. Hes a high end talent that scored 28 TDs this season. Cougars HC Mike Leach loves to pass the ball which is good and bad – fun to watch, but QB Connor Halliday threw 21 interceptions, which was worst in the FBS. This game should be full of big plays, points, and mistakes. 27. GoDaddy Bowl – Arkansas State vs Ball State (January 3rd, 9:00)You have to feel bad for juniors on Arkansas State – when they return for their fourth year next season theyll have a fourth head coach after Bryan Harsin accepted the Boise State gig. That said; its their third straight appearance in this bowl and got the bid after finishing as co-Sun Belt champs. Ball State QB Keith Wenning will top 4,000 yards passing in this one and had an impressive 34:6 TD/INT ratio. 28. Autozone Liberty Bowl – Rice vs Mississippi State (December 31st, 4:00)The Mississippi State Bulldogs won their final two games in overtime to get six wins and become bowl eligible. Six wins may not be overly impressive, but all six of the Bulldogs losses came against Top 25 ranked teams (Oklahoma State, Auburn, LSU, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Alabama). Rice won 10 games and took home their first outright conference title since 1957. 29. Famous Idaho Potato Bowl – Buffalo vs San Diego State (December 21st, 5:30 on TSN2 and TSN1050)Khalil Mack is the highlight of this bowl game. He racked up 94 tackles, 11 sacks, three interceptions and two TDs this season for Buffalo. Many NFL mock drafts have Mack in the top 10 and a big performance here could land him right there. There are lots of offensive players worth watching this bowl season, but very few defensive stars that are worth tuning in for – Mack is one. 30. Texas Bowl – Syracuse vs Minnesota (December 27th, 6:00)The Orangemen find themselves in back-to-back bowl games for the first time since Donovan McNabb – and all it took was a victory over Boston College in the final week of the season to do it. Minnesota returns to the Texas Bowl after losing last season. The Golden Gophers are looking to win nine games for just the second time in 108 years. 31. Beef OBrady St. Petersburgh Bowl – East Carolina vs Ohio (December 23rd, 2:00 on TSN2)ECU has a great QB/WR tandem in Shane Carden and Justin Hardy thats worth seeing before the year is complete. Carden was sixth in passing with 3,800 yards, while Hardy caught 105 passes; which was fifth best in the FBS. The Bobcats 29th ranked pass defense will need to step up if they have any chance of hanging with ECU. 32. Bell Helicopter Bowl – Middle Tennessee vs Navy (December 30, 11:45AM on TSN2)Navy runs the triple-option and was second best in the country with 322 yards per game on the ground. MTSU was 85th versus the run. This one could be a track meet, and who doesnt love long running plays and lots of scoring. 33. Military Bowl – Marshall vs Maryland (December 27th, 2:30 on TSN2)The Terps head to the Big 10 next season, and would love to take a bowl win with them. Theyll play this one in front of a home crowd with Navy Stadium only 27 miles from campus. Marshall is trying to win 10 games for the first time since 2002 – when QB Byron Leftwich was the star. This year its been another pivot leading the way in Rakeem Cato. His 36:9 TD/INT ratio was one of the best in all of college football. 34. R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl – Tulane vs Louisiana Lafayette (December 21, 9:00 on TSN2 and TSN1050)Despite being 34th on the list, if I could attend one bowl game this season it would be this one for the BBQ at the tailgate parties alone. The Green Wave vs the Rajin Cajuns is the battle of two of the coolest names in the NCAA. If youre looking for a player to watch, try Tulane QB Nick Montana – hes the son of Joe Montana. 35. Heart of Dallas Bowl – UNLV vs North Texas (January 1st, Noon)And the award for the “35th best” bowl game goes to the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Its in tough against the packed New Years Day schedule but its still a bowl game – and thats saying something. Called on from the college ranks to replace Andy Reid, Kelly implemented a whole new atmosphere in the City of Brotherly Love and now has the Eagles in the playoffs for the first time since 2010. The Eagles won 10 games and took advantage of a weak NFC East by capturing the division title on the final weekend of the regular season. Now theyre set to host Drew Brees and the high-powered New Orleans Saints tonight at Lincoln Financial Field in the Wild Card round. You can watch the game on CTV beginning at 8pm et/5pm pt. Kellys debut as an NFL head coach got off to a rousing start with a big win at Washington on “Monday Night Football,” but the Eagles fell back to earth with three straight losses. They snapped the slide with a win at New York and quarterback Nick Foles replaced an injured Michael Vick to take over for good under center. Foles made his first start in Week 6 at Tampa Bay and helped the Eagles even their record at 3-3. However, Foles would suffer through his worst start as a pro on Oct. 20 versus Dallas and was knocked out of the game with a concussion. After a brief Vick appearance and a Matt Barkley sighting the next week in a loss to the Giants, Foles stormed back with seven touchdown passes at Oakland, then led Philadelphia to another road win against Green Bay. The Eagles won five in a row at one point and erased a 3-5 start by finishing the season 7-1. Philadelphia squeezed past the Cowboys, 24-22, last Sunday night to capture the division crown and bring playoff football back to the Linc. “Its a great feeling,” Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson said about returning to the playoffs. “Our fans are going to go wild. Its a great opportunity to bring the playoffs to Philadelphia on Saturday. We just need to have a great week of practice and get ready for a good team coming in here.” Foles passed for 263 yards with two TDs and no interceptions in Big D, while the heart-and-soul of the offense, running back LeSean McCoy, recorded 131 yards on 27 carries to break the franchises single-season rushing mark, which was previously held by Wilbert Montgomery. McCoy led the NFL in rushing yards (1,607) and yards from scrimmage (2,126) and will face a Saints defense rated 19th in defending the run (111.6 yards per game). The Eagles finished the season first in rushing yards (160.4) and second in total yards (417.2). McCoy, Foles and Jackson give the Eagles a scary offensive trio, while the speedy wide receiver had a career-high 82 receptions for 1,332 yards, the second-most in team lore. Not to be forgotten, wide receiver Riley Cooper had a career year and put a foolish offseason incident in the past by hauling in 47 passes for 835 yards and eight TDs. He emerged as a big-play threat and averaged 17.8 yards per catch. All that wouldnt have happened if it wasnt for the efficient play of Foles. The lanky QB threw for 2,891 yards with 27 touchdown passes and only two interceptions, the best TD/INT ration in NFL history. Foles 119.2 passer rating led the league and he compiled 21 TD passes over the last eight games of the regular season. Foles now faces Brees and the two attended Westlake High School in Austin, TX. “Ive always watched him from afar,” Foles said of Brees. “Hes a great player and one of the best to ever play the game at the position. Hes a guy Ive watched and learned from and hes done a lot of great things throughout his career, on and off the field, and hes a great role model for fellow players, kids and adults.” New Orleans failed in its bid to capture an NFC South title and perhaps its struggles on the road this season didnt help. The Saints were an impressive 8-0 under the lights at the SuperDome, but 3-5 in enemy stadiums.dddddddddddd Brees and the Saints captured a playoff berth with last Sundays 42-17 demolition of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as Brees passed for 381 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions and surpassed the 5,000-yard passing mark for the fourth time in his Hall of Fame career. Brees, who has eclipsed the 5,000- yard passing mark in each of the previous three seasons, threw a TD pass in every game this year, finishing with 39 total, 5,162 yards and 12 INTs. The Saints did not make the playoffs a season ago when head coach Sean Payton was suspended for the entire year because of a bounty scandal. Payton and Brees have formed a solid friendship both on and off the field, and the quarterback is ready to get going again for another Super Bowl run. “That is always where the expectation has been,” Brees said of reaching the playoffs with or without Payton. “I know that we fell short of that last year and that was disappointing. We expected to be here with Sean, without Sean. Obviously having him back is great and he has a way of just little things to just kind of remind you of the focus and the opportunity and why we are all here.” Brees, who won the Super Bowl in 2009, is the only player in NFL history with two or more 5,000-yard seasons and has three straight 300-yard passing games in the playoffs. New Orleans welcomed Payton back by winning its first five games, but stumbled in a road matchup at New England. The Saints responded by winning four of five games, then dropped three of the next four before closing the regular season by crushing the Bucs. The Saints probably thought winning the division would be a no-brainer because Atlanta struggled, but Carolina came out of nowhere behind Cam Newton to claim the division and a first-round bye. Much like the Eagles minus the ground attack, the Saints have a solid quarterback and plenty of talented pass catchers. Pro Bowl tight end Jimmy Graham finished the season with 86 catches for 1,215 yards and 16 touchdowns, becoming the first tight end in NFL history to record at least 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns in two different seasons. Graham had six 100-yard games and is a huge target for the Saints. “Its been a good year for this team. We have been through a lot,” Graham said. “We have had ups and downs. We have learned a lot from our mistakes.” Graham and wide receivers Marques Colston (943 yards, 5 TD) and Kenny Stills (641 yards, 5 TD) get to line up against Philadelphias average secondary. The Eagles were last in passing yards allowed (289.8) and 29th in total yards allowed (394.2) in the regular season. They have played better on defense, though, especially against talented receivers in Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson and Brandon Marshall. But while Graham seems to be Philadelphias biggest issue, it will be running back Darren Sproles who can wreak havoc. Sproles was one of four players with at least 70 receptions (71) and finished with 604 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns. Running back Pierre Thomas aided in New Orleans pass attack by grabbing 77 passes for 513 yards and three scores. Thomas also had a team-high 549 rushing yards and two TDs. He is nursing a chest injury, but should play. The Saints, losers in three straight on the road, were second behind Denver in passing yards (307.4) and fourth in total yards (399.4). New Orleans and Philadelphia will meet for the third time in the playoffs, as the Eagles won back in 1992 and the Saints prevailed in 2006. The Eagles lead the all-time series by a 16-12 count, but New Orleans has won two in a row and four of the past five encounters between teams. ’ ’ ’

Hes moved across the country, and to a ballpark that isnt as hitter-friendly, but Robinson Cano remains the best of the bunch at second base. Over the past five seasons, Cano has led second basemen with 142 home runs, 496 runs scored, 513 RBI and a .314 batting average. Gaudy numbers at a position that doesnt have a ton of competition, so it would normally land Cano in the first round and it still could, but there is an argument to be made that Cano isnt going to have the same power numbers in Seattle and there is a difference between a .300 hitter with 25 home runs and a .300 hitter with 18 home runs when it comes to assigning relative value. The closest rival to Cano is Bostons Dustin Pedroia, who has hit .297 over the past five seasons, averaging 88 runs, 71 RBI and 18 stolen bases in that time frame. With those two as the established leaders at the position, the rest are definitely a tier behind. Clevelands Jason Kipnis is closing the gap, with back-to-back 30-steal seasons and Cincinnatis Brandon Phillips wont duplicate his 100 RBI season and doesnt provide stolen bases as he did earlier in his career, but hes in the middle of a productive lineup and has registered more than 600 plate appearances in six straight seasons, so he can help many teams. Another longtime productive option at second base is Ian Kinsler, moving to Detroit from Texas. While Kinsler has dipped from his two 30-30 (HR-SB) seasons, hes in prime position to score a lot of runs and hes topped 100 runs in a season four times. Houstons Jose Altuve offers value in terms of batting average and back-to-back 30-steal seasons, but his overall numbers are limited somewhat by the weak Astros supporting cast. Tampa Bays ultra-versatile Ben Zobrist hold more value because he can play more than one position, and even coming off a bit of a down year, still had his fifth straight campaign with double-figure homers and steals. The thing about second base is that, unless youre going after Cano or Pedroia early, you can probably afford to wait and make a value play. Health was an issue for Arizonas Aaron Hill last season, as he was limited to 87 games, but hes been really productive since going to the National League, hitting .300 with an .862 OPS in 1060 at-bats with the Diamondbacks. Veteran standbys Chase Utley, always an injury concern, and Howie Kendrick are worth looking at for middle-infield spots and the Mets Daniel Murphy, a .290 career hitter, added value to his game last season when he stole 23 bases. San Diegos Jedd Gyorko mashed 23 home runs in 486 at-bats as a rookie. If he is healthy enough for 550-600 at-bats, is a 30-homer season within reach? Gyorko is only one of the younger guys that would have potential to help. Milwaukees Scooter Gennett hit .324 in 213 at-bats last season and .297 three-and-a-half minor league seasons. Texas Jurickson Profar is widely considered one of the top prospects in baseball and may be a year or two away from putting up big numbers (and is hurt in camp), but hes going to get a chance to play every day now that Kinsler is gone. Washingtons Anthony Rendon, the sixth overall pick in 2011, is another young player with a chance to break out. He had a .939 OPS in the minors and a .725 OPS in 351 at-bats as a rookie last year. Over a full season, 20-plus homers is possible. For a potential late-round bargain, consider the Dodgers Dee Gordon, the speedster who won the starting job over Cuban import Alex Guerrero and has swiped 66 bases in 182 career games. Speaking to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on Friday, Brodeur said "Ive come to the conclusion that Im definitely going to be available July 1.MONTREAL — For Montreal Canadiens and their rabid fans, its seventh heaven. In a fight for their playoff lives, the Montreal club pulled off a convincing 4-0 win against the Boston Bruins on Monday night to force a seventh and deciding game in their Stanley Cup playoff semifinal series. To hear their fanbase, a do-or-die Game 6 win against their hated rivals from Boston was never in doubt. “Incredible! The Habs are the best, did you see that win?,” yelled Andrew Giannakis, breathlessly, as he emerged from the arena. “They scored the first goal and the rest is history.” As with Monday night, Montreal is faced with a must-win situation in 48 hours if it wants to continue being the only Canadian team in the NHL playoffs this year. Some, likes Charles Mondon, can feel the playoff fever in the air. “I dont think there is no better place to cheer for hockey than Montreal,” said Mondon, sporting a Max Pacioretty jersey as he smoked a cigarette outside the arena. “No disrespect to the rest of Canada … here in Montreal, we bleed hockey, we breath hockey, we eat hockey, we sleep hockey.” Mondon predicts a close contest on Wednesday night — a three-goal game that could really go either way. “To be honest with you, Game 7 against Boston for round two is the best feeling in the world,” Mondon said. “I think were going to beat them.” Montreal and Boston is considered one of the greatest rivalry in sports, and that battle is playing out again this post-season. The Canadiens and Bruins have met a whopping 34 times in the NHL playoffs, wiith the Canadiens having won 24 of those series.dddddddddddd Things have been different in recent years — the Bruins have taken the last two series in 2009 and 2011. But fans are hoping for a reversal of fortunes, like Devon Pattemore of Yorkton, Sask., a lifelong Habs fan who finds herself in Montreal for a conference during a playoff run. Sporting a well-worn Saku Koivu jersey, she came out to watch the third period outside the Bell Centre with a few hundred other fans who peered into a restaurants giant screen from outside the eatery. “Theyre just a faster team and I just believe in them,” said Pattemore, predicting a Montreal Game 7 victory. “On Wednesday night well be at a pub (in town) watching.” The last time the Canadiens beat the Bruins in the playoffs was in 2008 and it was largely overshadowed by what happened once the game was done. A thrilling, emotionally charged seventh game win ended with smashed windows, tear gas and arrests. Police cars were set ablaze and stores looted when a festive celebration turned ugly. But in a city known for its hockey-related rioting, security has not been an issue so far in these playoffs. There was a heavy police presence downtown on Monday night, but few revellers made it up to the downtown core. Clusters of officers were gathered at every street corner and in front of storefronts that might be susceptible to looting. Security guards hired by some businesses milled about and there were no large gatherings on a crisp May evening. And by the end of the night, Montreal police reported no major incidents. ’ ’ ’

The Toronto Argonauts have a lot to look forward to in 2014. Long gone are the glory moments of the 100th Grey Cup, back to reality, which is an almost total rebuilding effort on defence in effort to get back to the 102nd Grey Cup come November 30th. First and foremost, this year has such special optimism because they get their quarterback back. With Anthony Calvillo out of the picture, Ricky Ray is the best in the league. He did have issues staying healthy last year but in the time he played he was remarkable. Completing 77 per cent of your passes and finishing with a 21:2 touchdown to interception ratio is an accomplishment that other quarterbacks envy and respect. His quarterback rating was 126.4. If Ray can stay healthy for the year, the Argonauts will always be in position to win it all. Health really is the only issue as age, now creeping into the mid 30s, is still not a significant detriment. Other positions? Absolutely. If you are a running back or defensive back, when you lose that athletic burst or reactive ability, you lose a lot. But quarterbacks, more than any other position, are cerebral more than physical and as long as the first dominates the second, you can continue to play at a very high level. The next aspect of success could be a re-designed defence. Losing Chris Jones, now the head coach with the Edmonton Eskimos, was intense as Jones transferred his intensity successfully to the players he directed. But when a coaching void is opened it is usually filled quickly, and the combination of Tim Burke and Casey Creehan will develop their own style based on experience, not experiment. Toronto will be a much more “upfield” team, depending on a front four to pressure and a back eight to react. As a coordinator, Burke has always been successful, and as a linebacker coach so has Creehan. Then after Mike OShea left to become the head coach in Winnipeg, the void was filled by Jim Daley, who knows this league better than any. Losing two assistants to head coaching jobs says a lot about how good the defensive staff was, but it could be even better potentially with the positions filled in the present. Running back will be a battle. With Chad Kackert retired, it appears to be a three-man competition between Steve Slaton, Curtis Steel, and Anthony Coombs. Can Coombs be an 18 game starter? Very unlikely, but possible. Nothing would be better than to see the University of Manitoba star be the next Jon Cornish. If he does, then everything falls into place on offence and with ratio flexibility. Overall, from last year there are major priorities for improvement. Toronto ended the season with the best red zone offence and the best red zone defence. 69 per cent of the time the Argos produced touchdowns over field goals on offence. And only 46 per cent of the time Toronto allowed touchdowns, forcing opponents into field goals. Inside the 20, the Argos were the best in CFL football. Outside the 20s: a priority to improve. On average, teams produced 389 yards of offence, 289 of which was through the air. Those totals were both eighth in the league. Toronto finished dead last in rushing yards as well, with only 85 produced per game. And that eighth-place reality is for the second year in a row. But you can rationalize that with a +18 takeaway/giveaway number and arguing what happens between the 20s is not as significant as what happens from the 20 in. But all that yardage against takes time away from Ray and the offence; that has to be improved. So looking into the future one year at a time, Toronto will have a good team. Looking into the future more than one year, Toronto needs a new home for the team. BMO Field is an excellent choice but the financing is still floating in space. Because the stadium was built with tax payer money, there is no reason not to include all. If it was privately funded, than those who paid for it can use it as they see fit. But it was paid by the public so should be open to public use, and that includes the Toronto Argonauts. To me, expansion will create more revenue for all and the location and design can be adapted for all. Where there is a will, there is a way. Both Hamilton and Montreal will be better and are better right now than at this time last year. Ottawa is a complete unknown but is not to be looked at as a guarantee win day. Toronto is somewhere in the middle, catching up perhaps to Hamilton and Montreal but way ahead of Ottawa. But with Ray at quarterback the catch up is more of a threat than a desire. Two years removed from the Grey Cup means a new team in Toronto. . - Floridas seniors, those four guys who fell just short of the Final Four the last three years, talked about cutting down the nets after clinching the Southeastern Conferences regular-season championship. Louis Blues return to top spot in the TSN.TORONTO — Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks and Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers have been nominated as finalists for the Ted Lindsay Award. The award is presented annually to the most valuable player in the NHL, as voted by fellow members of the National Hockey League Players Association. The three centres are also the finalists for the Hart Trophy, awarded by the NHL to the player considered most valuable to his team. Crosby scored 36 goals and led the league in assists (68) and points (104) to capture his second career Art Ross Trophy and lead the Penguins to their second consecutive division title. He registered points in 60 of the 80 games he played in (75 per cent), including 30 multi-point performances, and never went more than two consecutive games without registering a point. The 26-year-old Cole Harbour, N.S., native also reached the 100-point milestone for the fifth time hit 700 career points in his 497th game, the fastest among active players and sixth-fastest in NHL history. Crosby won the award in 2007 and 2013 and was a finalist in 2010.dddddddddddd Getzlaf scored a career-high 31 goals and ranked second in the league with 87 points to lead the Ducks to the top record in the Western Conference for the first time in franchise history. He posted a 14-game point streak from Nov. 15-Dec. 15 (six goals, 11 assists). Getzlaf, from Regina, also set a career high with seven game-winning goals and recorded a plus-28 defensive rating. Hes a first-time nominee and is looking to become the first Ducks player to receive the award. Giroux matched a career high with 28 goals and finished third in the NHL scoring race with 86 points to help the Flyers bounce back from a 3-9-0 start to the season. After being held pointless in his first five games and not scoring a goal until his 16th, Giroux totalled 28 goals and 51 assists in his final 67 games of the season. The 26-year-old Hearst, Ont., native also compiled a career-long, nine-game point streak Dec. 11-30, (six goals, 11 assists) and recorded his 100th NHL goal Dec. 19. Hes looking to become the first Flyer to receive the Award since Eric Lindros in 1995. ’ ’ ’
