Téma: Jak postupovat / ted. The Warriors also NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans are happy to win a game again and avoiding becoming the first team to lose to the Indianapolis Colts. A running back controversy may be inevitable. Matt Hasselbeck threw for 224 yards and a touchdown, and Nate Washington scored twice and the Titans beat Indianapolis 27-10 Sunday. Rob Bironas kicked field goals of 51 and 50 yards, and Jason McCourty recovered a blocked punt in the end zone as the Titans (4-3) snapped a two-game skid that seemed longer with the losses wrapped around the bye week. “Obviously, the wins the bottom line, and theres things we know weve got to improve upon,” Titans coach Mike Munchak said. “But its good to get to 4-3 the way the last two weeks went. Were going to enjoy this.” The Titans also sacked Curtis Painter twice and intercepted him twice, turning those turnovers into 14 points for their first win in this AFC South rivalry since Oct. 27, 2008. Hasselbeck credited defence and special teams with helping an offence that had four three-and-outs against a Colts defence giving up 416 yards a game. “Theres a lot to correct, but Im very excited about the win,” Hasselbeck said. “I wish we were all more excited. Thats a good win for us at home. It would not have been good if we did not win after two games of losing. It was nice to get back to winning a game.” The Colts (0-8) never really threatened to win their sixth straight in this matchup. Already without Peyton Manning, who signed autographs in the end zone during warmups, the Colts trailed 20-0 by halftime coming off a 62-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The Colts outgained Tennessee 399-311, but couldnt overcome 10 penalties for 66 yards. “I think we had eight in the first half or something like that, which is highly uncharacteristic of us,” Colts coach Jim Caldwell said. “You couple that with a couple turnovers, and its a tough day.” The Titans came in with the NFLs worst running game, and Chris Johnson said they thought theyd have a chance to run against a group giving up 150.9 yards per game. Johnson struggled again and heard more boos from the home fans as he ran 14 times for 34 yards. This time, backup Javon Ringer was more productive as he ran 14 times for 60 yards. He also caught a team-high five passes for 42 yards and was on the field late in the fourth quarter. Titans coach Mike Munchak said they were just rotating the backs trying to fix a running game that remains a work in progress. Johnson said people must not be used to the rotation, which Tennessee really hadnt used since 2008 with LenDale White. “The running game hasnt been where we wanted it to be all year, so I guess they just trying new things,” Johnson said. Indianapolis reshuffled its offensive line again due to injuries with left tackle Anthony Castonzo, left guard Joe Reitz and right guard Ryan Diem out. Jeff Linkenbach swung from right to left tackle. The Colts pulled within 20-10 when Donald Brown capped an 80-yard drive with a four-yard TD with 13:29 left. The Colts got their lone sack of Hasselbeck and forced the Titans to punt with 9:38 left. But Titans defensive end Jason Jones tipped Painters pass into the air, and linebacker Barrett Ruud hauled in the interception with 8:18 remaining. Hasselbeck found Washington alone in the end zone for a 14-yard TD pass to seal the victory with 5:20 left. Indy tried to rally and had first-and-goal twice down the stretch. But Michael Griffin broke up a fourth-down pass to Dallas Clark with 2:37 left, and Painter missed connecting with Pierre Garcon on the second with 26 seconds remaining. “We certainly know what were capable of doing,” said Painter, who threw for 250 yards and ran for a team-high 79 yards. “We came out in the second half and moved the ball well and played well. Weve just got to get sharper and not be inconsistent.” Tennessee relied on special teams most of the first half as the offence bogged down early, settling for field goals of 51 and 50 yards from Bironas. Patrick Bailey broke through and blocked Pat McAfees punt, and McCourty grabbed the ball out of the air before falling to the ground for the TD and a 10-0 lead with 9:52 left in the second. McCourty also tipped a pass intended for Garcon to Griffin for the interception. That seemed to give the Titans a spark on offence along with Ringer at running back and Johnson watching from the sideline. With first-and-goal at the Colts three, Washington ran in for his first rushing TD just before halftime for a 20-0 lead. Notes: The Titans improved to 63-37 in their 100th game at LP Field. They are 3-1 at home this season under Munchak. … The block was the first for McAfee in 172 punts. … The TD was McCourtys first of his career. … Griffin has 16 career interceptions. … Colts WR Blair White hurt his leg in the first quarter and returned. But he left again in the second quarter and did not return. … Colts CB Terrence Johnson was helped off the field putting little weight on his right leg, but he returned. … The Colts had been intercepted only three times coming into Sunday, tying St. Louis for the second fewest in the NFL. Though the Jets have not confirmed any updates to Scheifeles status, TSN Hockey Analyst Aaron Ward says early reports indicate he suffered an MCL injury and will likely out 6-8 weeks. OAKLAND, Calif. — Mark Jackson came to the Golden State Warriors talking big and brash. He promised playoff appearances and championships, and he delivered plenty of wins along the way. Away from the court, though, Jackson never backed down from doing things how he wanted. His inability to mesh with management — and managements inability to mesh with Jackson — increasingly overshadowed his success and ultimately cost him his job. The Warriors fired Jackson after three seasons Tuesday, ending the franchises most successful coaching tenure in the past two decades but also one filled with drama and distractions. “Obviously it was not made exclusively on wins and losses,” Warriors owner Joe Lacob said. Lacob and general manager Bob Myers both thanked Jackson, saying he helped make the Warriors a more attractive franchise. But Myers said the decision to dismiss Jackson was “unanimous” among the teams executives — though still not easy — in part because the Warriors want a coach who can “develop a synergy” with everybody in basketball operations. Jacksons time with the Warriors will be remembered for the way he helped turn a perennially losing franchise into a consistent winner and the bold and bombastic way in which he did it. He guaranteed Golden State would make the playoffs in his first season, then finished 23-36 after the NBA labour lockout. The Warriors went 47-35 last season and had a memorable run to the second round of the playoffs, and they were 51-31 this season before losing in seven games to the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round. The Warriors, who have surrounded star Stephen Curry with a talented nucleus since Lacobs group bought the franchise in 2010, had not made the playoffs in consecutive years since 1991-92. They had made the post-season once in 17 years before Jackson arrived. Lacob compared the decision to replace Jackson to his work as a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley. “Theres a different CEO that may be required to achieve success at different stages of an organizations development,” Lacob said. “When youre a startup company its one thing, when youre a small-growth company its one thing and when youre a mature company thats trying to reach a billion in sales — or in this case win an NBA championship — perhaps thats a different person. And we just felt overall we needed a different person.” Lacob and Myers declined to discuss the coaching search, other than to say it would begin immediately. Former NBA player and TNT broadcaster Steve Kerr, former Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy, Iowa States Fred Hoiberg and Connecticuts Kevin Ollie have been among the most talked-about candidates this off-season. The Warriors know a new coach comes with the risk of disrupting team chemistry, especially considering nearly every player publicly called for Jackson to return, most notably Curry, whom Lacob said was told of the decision ahead of time. Myers also spoke to several players after he and Lacob informed Jacksonn of their decision in a meeting Tuesday morning.dddddddddddd “The hope and belief after talking to them is that they trust us and they believe that we make decisions to win as well,” Myers said. Jackson took to Twitter to thank the organization, players and fans. Several of his present and past players also applauded the job he had done. Jackson, a former NBA point guard who had his best seasons with the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers, had never been a head coach at any level when Lacob hired him away from the ESPN/ABC broadcast table in June 2011. A minister who runs a church with his wife near their Southern California home, Jackson often spoke of his Christian beliefs while surprisingly turning the Warriors into one of the NBAs best defensive teams. But Jacksons boisterous personality at times did not play well with Warriors management, his staff and — to a much lesser extent — his players. And his attitude, which bordered on confidence and cockiness, also came off as increasingly insecure when the team struggled. The Warriors still stuck by Jackson even when he created news off the court, including when reports surfaced in June 2012 that he and his family were the targets of an extortion attempt related to an extramarital affair he had six years prior, which led to questions about his credibility and morals. The pressure on Jackson really heated up when the Warriors decided to pick up his contract option for the 2014-15 season last summer instead of negotiating a long-term deal as he had wanted. Management also encouraged Jackson to hire a strong tactician after top assistant Michael Malone — who had several disagreements with Jackson — left to become the coach of the Sacramento Kings. Instead, Jackson promoted Pete Myers and other assistants and hired Lindsey Hunter and Brian Scalabrine. And while reports of rifts within the team surfaced on occasion, having two assistants dismissed — Scalabrine reassigned to the teams NBA Development League affiliate in Santa Cruz, and Darren Erman fired — in a 12-day span before the playoffs perpetuated the idea that Jackson had fostered an environment of dysfunction, which he repeatedly refuted. The Warriors also parted ways with all of Jacksons assistants Tuesday. Several home losses to lesser teams frustrated Lacob more than anything and cost the Warriors a chance to earn anything more than the sixth playoff seed, which they also had a year ago when they upset Denver in the first round before falling to San Antonio. The Warriors still showed a lot of fight — and an ability to make adjustments — with centre Andrew Bogut out with a fractured right rib in the playoffs, pushing the third-seeded Clippers to seven games. “George Karl was Coach of the Year last year and got fired,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. “Mark Jackson gets a team to multiple playoffs for the first time in a thousand years, and then gets fired. Its our job. Its a tough job, and I think everybody knows it now more than ever.” ’ ’ ’ |

Tseng, from Taiwan, had a 21-under 267 total on the Panther Creek course for her seventh tour title in four years. She also won the season-opening LPGA Thailand and three other worldwide events this year. In the 208 tournament, Tseng led by a stroke with a hole left, but flew the green, made bogey then lost to Ji Young Oh in a playoff when she three-putting the first extra hole. “I just kept telling myself: Focus! Focus!” said Tseng, bogey-free the final two rounds. “I missed a couple of putts but I still was able to make some birdies.” Tseng bought Annika Sorenstams house — with its giant trophy case — in Florida in 2009. “I go back to my house and see all that empty space and I try to fill it up,” Tseng said. “I want to put all my amateur trophies in there and gett closer.dddddddddddd” Kerr, the 2010 winner, finished three strokes back, shooting a 67. “I played good. I just needed to get some of those putts to the hole, give em a chance to go in,” Kerr said. “It would have been nice to make birdie on the last hole, but it didnt matter. She was too far ahead.” Paula Creamer and Brittany Lincicome (70) tied for third at 16 under. Title sponsor State Farm Insurance Companies had declined to renew its commitment after this year and a replacement sponsor has yet to be found, putting the event in danger of folding. “I love this tournament since I was rookie, so I really look forward to coming back to defend my championship,” Tseng said. “I think the crowd every year is getting bigger and bigger, and all the fans, all the volunteers, the people here love this tournament. I can tell. Its like big party all week and everybody was very excited, so I wish this is not the end. I wish I can come back.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / rphy the bulk of PARIS — At last, Formula One has a heated rivalry again. Better still, its in the same team and there are 13 races left for it to develop. The dominance of Mercedes, which has swept all six races and all six pole positions so far, prompted fears that this season was becoming even more predictable than the last, when Sebastian Vettel won the final nine races and Red Bull crushed everyone. Then, at last weekends Monaco GP, a feud erupted out of nowhere between Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to add some much-needed spice to a dull campaign. Hamilton has won four races this season, but Rosberg captured Sundays race from pole for his second victory and reclaimed the overall championship lead with 122 points to 118 for his teammate. “Were fierce competitors, so you can never expect us to be best friends and compete as fiercely as we do,” Hamilton said after the Monaco GP. “But I will try to remain respectful.” Hamilton ignited the row by taking the brash step of publicly claiming that Rosberg, the son of former F1 champ Keke Rosberg, has less hunger than him after growing up in the luxurious environment of Monaco. Rosberg didnt respond to those claims verbally, but in the eyes of Hamilton he responded to them on the track by making a surprising last-gasp mistake in qualifying that led to a yellow flag. The session was abruptly halted, ending any hopes that Hamilton, at full throttle just behind, had of winning pole. The fallout escalated quickly. An incensed Hamilton insinuated that Rosberg — cleared by stewards of any wrongdoing — had done it on purpose, suggesting he would watch his own back the way the late Ayrton Senna did when he fell out with Alain Prost when they drove for McLaren in the late 1980s. With tensions running high, the two Mercedes drivers were not in the post-qualifying team meeting together and were at opposite ends for the traditional pre-race jaunt around the circuit. After Rosbergs win, there was no handshake from Hamilton, who came in second to give Mercedes a fifth straight 1-2 finish. There have been fiery team rivalries before, notably the one between Vettel and Mark Webber at Red Bull. That got very bitter, with each driver ignoring team orders to let the other one pass and making blunt comments about the other. But the crucial difference is that, apart from 2010 when Webber challenged for the title, the four-time defending champion Vettel was always winning. Relations were ice-cold, but there also seemed to be a mutual acceptance they would never get along and the professional working environment within Red Bull continued to operate smoothly. The matter is more delicate for Rosberg and Hamilton because theyve known each other for such a long time, racing karts against each other and even going on holiday together — something that was never going to happen with Webber and Vettel, and even less so with Senna and Prost. Rosberg is less experienced than Hamilton, with five GP wins compared to Hamiltons 26, but the German has shown real consistency with top-two finishes in all six races. Hamilton would still be ahead, though, but for the engine failure that forced the British driver to retire in the season opener at Melbourne. That technical glitch, on what is the most reliable car in F1, likely still rankles him. After several frustrating seasons with McLaren, Hamilton has a great chance to win his second F1 title six years on. But standing in his way is his childhood friend. That relationship is going to be severely tested and the spotlight will be beaming straight in the face of both drivers at the Canadian GP in two weeks time. CLEVELAND — Little Faith Murphy scooped everyone on her daddy signing with the Indians. After free agent outfielder David Murphy agreed to terms on a contract last week with Cleveland, his 5-year-daughter, Faith, was at day care in Texas where she was learning about Thanksgiving. Thats when she broke the big news and startled some teachers. “They were talking about Pilgrims and Indians,” Cleveland general manager Chris Antonetti said on a conference call. “And she said, My daddy is going to be an Indian. Thats a first for us.” Murphy, who spent the past seven seasons with the Rangers, finalized a $12 million, two-year contract Monday. Among the Indians off-season goals were to improve their depth in the outfield and increase their production against right-handed hitters. They feel theyve addressed both needs by signing Murphy, who has a career .275 average and can play all three outfield positions. Murphy had a down season in 2013, batting a career-low .220 with 13 homers and 45 RBIs in 142 games. The Indians are confident hell put up statistics more in line with his career numbers. “In talking to David, with Josh Hamilton leaving (via free agency), he put some pressurre on himself and maybe tried to do a little more,” Antonetti said.dddddddddddd “We expect him to bounce back and get closer to his norms next year.” Murphy played mostly left field, but the Indians will use him in all three spots. Antonetti expects manager Terry Francona to primarily give Murphy the bulk of his at-bats while playing right field, where he can platoon with Ryan Raburn or Drew Stubbs, who is eligible for salary arbitration. “He will give Terry the opportunity to mix and match,” Antonetti said. “It will keep guys healthy and fresh. We feel like we can match up well with whoever is pitching.” Murphy will receive salaries of $5.5 million next year and $6 million in 2015, and the Indians have a $7 million option for 2016 with a $500,000 buyout. His 2016 salary can increase by $1.5 million: $250,000 each for 500, 525, 550 and 575 plate appearances, and $500,000 for 600. He would receive a $100,000 bonus if traded. A left-handed hitter, Murphy batted .304 in 2012 with 15 homers and 61 RBIs in 147 games. He finished among the AL leaders in on-base percentage and average. Murphy was drafted by Boston in 2003 and traded to Texas in 2007. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / h an efficient six-hitter for This could have been a column on why Cristiano Ronaldo should win the Ballon DOr. But it isnt. That has been done, many times, including by myself in January. For similar reasons I had a year ago, I believe Ronaldo should win it this year, but a year is a long time in sport and, although my opinion on who should win it hasnt changed, my opinion on the award certainly has. I no longer care one bit. I should point out that I have never been a big fan of individual awards in team sports. For me, important accolades, awards and trophies are won within the sporting arena and anything else is precisely what most sports are not – arbitrary; placed in the hands of a democracy who may or may not be informed enough to reach the correct decision. On the face of it, the task of finding the best player of the year should be a relatively simple one. In fact, it is so simple some inside the sport of baseball are wondering if they should have such an award, instead of their Most Valuable Player honour. In that sport, the best player in the game, Mike Trout, an outfielder for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, has finished runner-up in the American League the last two years in the MVP race, simply because his team didnt make the playoffs and were not as good as the Detroit Tigers, the team, Miguel Cabrera, the winner, played for. If a Ballon DOr existed in baseball, Trout, who has an astounding 20.4 WAR the past two seasons, would already be a two-time winner. So is it time to change their sports main individual award? ESPNs Buster Olney and Tim Kurkjian, two of the baseballs finest journalists, debated this very topic on a podcast recently: Olney said: “A really smart executive in baseball said to me, you know it would be a real shame if the best player in baseball for the first five years of his career didnt win (the MVP) because he had bad teammates and I hope, although I dont think it will happen, that the (voters) baseball writers would define MVP and just pick the best player.” Kurkjian disagreed: “I like it the way it is because it creates the debates. The word valuable is a very subjective term and its up to the voters to determine who the best player is based on the word valuable.” Make no mistake, Cabrera is a marvellous hitter, but Trout, a superior overall player, has been even better the past two years but lost out on the award simply because of the word “valuable,” with many voters believing Cabrera played in more valuable games than Trout because the Detroit Tigers were in a playoff position in September. As a lover of baseball, I have sat back the past two Septembers and watched/listened ad nauseam to networks debate who is more deserving, rather than talk about the actual baseball games taking place at an incredibly exciting time of their season. The debates might be good for media shows and the sport which wants as many people talking about it as possible, but the truth is when the decision is finally made, it doesnt make knowledgeable baseball fans think any differently about Cabrera, with two MVPs, or Trout, with none. And that is exactly the same with the Ballon DOr. From 1956 to 2009, it was an award with history that meant (a small) something, but it still had major flaws. It was only given to European players until 1995, meaning all-time greats like Pele and Diego Maradona didnt win a Ballon DOr. Zinedine Zidane did win one, as well as three FIFA World Player of the Year awards, but is that what you think of when you think of Zidane? Of course, not. Ninety-nine per cent of the games biggest fans couldnt tell you exactly how many awards he won, but they could tell you about his brilliant performance in the 1998 World Cup final and the breathtaking goal he scored in the 2002 Champions League final. And that is how it should be. As we view sporting events that take place in our time, we are trusted, as the guardians of that current footage, to ensure that history will tell the story it should. After Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi retire and your kids or grandchildren ask you about them, you should not tell them how many Ballon DOrs they won. However, with column inches to fill and shows to accommodate, the worlds media have spent the best part of this international window talking about this award, rather than the games being played. Even when Ronaldo produced one of the finest individual performances, guiding Portugal to the World Cup, much of the talk was still on whether or not he should win the Ballon DOr. His performances on the field, which ultimately define him as a player, is what people need to focus on and not because it should decide whether or not he wins an award at a glamorous FIFA ceremony in January. Since 2010, when FIFA got their grubby hands on the award and merged it with the World Player of the Year honour, the award has lost its lustre while gaining more and more media attention. Previously open to the worlds finest media members to vote, FIFA extended the Ballon DOr voting process to captains and coaches of the national teams around the world. Each voter is asked to come up with a top three from a 23-man shortlist. With 2010 a World Cup year, many eyes were on the tournament in South Africa, leaving the likes of Wesley Sneijder, Andres Iniesta and Xavi as real threats to Ronaldo and Messi at the top of the game. The last three years, however, there has been no reason for anybody to believe a player has been better than Ronaldo, let alone, Messi. And that includes Franck Ribery. Ribery was thought to be among one of the favourites to win the award in January because he was the best player on the best team, Bayern Munich, this year. This, however, is just another example of people over thinking the award. Ballon DOr does not go to the games best player, it goes to the games best player of that year, but even that should rule out Ribery. Yet, just this very week, a very respected Spanish writer suggested Ribery would be a worthy winner because Messi hadnt won anything in 2013. This is a man who covers the game extremely well and is paid to watch two of the greatest players the game has ever seen, each week, yet he would have no problem with Ribery winning the award? A man who plays in the German Bundesliga for a team the writer has probably watched fewer than a dozen times in 2013? That writer, like you and me, will not have seen enough of Ribery to know if he is on Messi and Ronaldos leve,l but if he believes the Frenchman could be, what chance does that leave footballers who see far fewer matches than media members? The result? Just a bunch of voters guessing or picking their own personal favourites or friends. Now, you have likely never heard of Jaffar Khan. He is the captain of the Pakistan national team. In 2011, Khan voted for Thomas Muller to win the Ballon DOr with Andres Iniesta second and Bastian Schweinsteiger third. No Messi or Ronaldo. In 2012, Khan voted for Iker Casillas to win the Ballon DOr with Andres Iniesta second and Xavi third. No Messi or Ronaldo. Khan is a goalkeeper. He is also a man who should never be allowed to vote ever again. This is not about personal opinion, folks. It is not like looking for a political party that matches your values. For the past three years, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been hands down better than any footballer on the planet. Yet, Khan wasnt alone in leaving them off his ballot in 2012. Many other examples were revealing, including Austrias Christian Fuchs naming Mario Balotelli (who would finish 23rd of 23 nominees) third and ahead of Ronaldo and Messi and Tomas Danilevicius of Lithuania selecting Wayne Rooney ahead of the duo. If you are looking for names more recognizable in the game when searching for questionable votes, they are scattered all over the revealed ballots. Dutch skipper Sneijders choice? Dutchman Robin van Persie. Spanish skipper Casillas? He chose Real Madrid and Spanish teammate Sergio Ramos, placing club teammate Ronaldo second and Messi outside of the top three. Chinese coach Jose Camacho, who managed his native Spain in the 2002 World Cup, picked three of his countrymen on his ballot – Iniesta, Xavi and Casillas. German boss Joachim Low? Germans Mesut Ozil first and Manuel Neuer second. Spanish boss Vicente Del Bosque? All three players from Spain. It is not fair to hammer the likes of Del Bosque and Low, after all they know the mental state of their players and if they think it can give them an edge by picking them on their ballot, then they are just doing their job. The point is the voting process is a farce and this week it become even more farcical. On Tuesday, FIFA decided to re-open this years voting process for Ballon DOr nominees following rightful criticism it received in originally enforcing a deadline of November 15th on its voters before key World Cup qualifiers had been played. This means Ronaldo will likely win in January, as he should. However, the timing of the announcement – just hours after Portugals win over Sweden – brought the attention once again back on FIFA and their award. In an era where peoples attention spans are lesser than ever, the great thing about this game is just how much you need to watch it to make judgments. There isnt a baseball box score or a fantasy football ticker available to show you who had a good game. It is down to your eyes and your insight and it is on those that you will rely when you look back at the great careers Messi and Ronaldo have. Dont let FIFA and their annual Mickey Mouse parade every January alter that. Téma: Jak postupovat / the high slot that we DENVER — Lindsey Vonn will skip the World Cup races next week in Beaver Creek, Colorado, as she recovers from a downhill training crash in which she partially tore one of the reconstructed ligaments in her surgically repaired right knee. The reigning Olympic downhill champion will continue to go through therapy on her knee and is not ruling out a possible return to racing in Lake Louise, Alberta, the following week, her personal publicist, Lewis Kay, said in a statement Friday. The Sochi Games are less than three months away and its unclear whether Vonns crash earlier this week will affect her Olympic aspirations. The four-time overall World Cup champion fell during a training run at Copper Mountain, hurting the same knee she injured in a high-speed crash at the world championships in February. She also suffered minor facial abrasions and a bruised shoulder blade, which are on the mend. On her Facebook page Friday afternoon, Vonn wrote: “Thank you all so much for your support and well wishes. It has been a very difficult few days and your positive messages have helped tremendously. Rehab is going well and I am working as hard as I can to race in Lake Louise in a few weeks. Thank you again, Im proud to have the best fans in the world! Love, Lindsey.” She then added, “PS: dont worry guys, this is only a temporary setback. Nothing will keep me from picking myself back up and continuing to fight for my dreams.” Her surgeon, Dr. Bill Sterett, said that Vonn is “progressing well while not losing any of the strength she worked so hard to achieve.” Vonn, who lives in Vail, was looking forward to making her season debut in Beaver Creek on a new womens course set up ahead of the 2015 world championships. Vonn knows Lake Louise quite well, though, and has been so successful there — winning 14 times — that its become known as “Lake Lindsey.” After Lake Louise, the World Cup womens circuit swings back to Europe for super-G and giant slalom races in St. Moritz, Switzerland, on Dec. 14-15. Then, its off to Courchevel, France, for a slalom event on Dec. 17. Vonn remains three wins away from matching Austrian great Annemarie Moser-Proells record of 62 World Cup race victories. Winnipeg got out of the post-Olympic starting blocks quickly with a 3-2 shootout win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night as Wheeler scored his 23rd goal of the season. “A vast percentage of the league is going to be pretty rested after a 2 1/2-week break,” said Wheeler, who played for the United States in Sochi, but saw limited minutes as the Americans 13th forward. “I think its an all-out sprint. Theres no time to be tired.” Wheeler was joined on the score sheet by Bryan Little. Olli Jokinen put away the shootout winner in the fourth round for Winnipeg (29-26-6). Devin Setoguchi also beat Coyotes goalie Mike Smith in the shootout, while Antoine Vermette was the only Coyote to solve Ondrej Pavelec. Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Martin Hanzal scored in regulation for Phoenix (27-21-11) in the first game for both teams after a 19-day break for the Winter Olympics. The Jets continued their winning ways under new head coach Paul Maurice, improving to 10-3-1 since he replaced the fired Claude Noel. Despite some less-than-crisp play, the coach said he was pleasantly surprised by how well his team played after such a long layoff. “It was tough at times, but just from the stuff I watched the last two days (around the league), it was a better game than I thought I was going to see,” Maurice said. Winnipeg pulled within one point of the Coyotes as both teams chase a wild-card playoff spot, although Phoenix has two games in hand. Dallas sits in the final spot with 66 points, one better than Phoenix and Vancouver, and two ahead of Winnipeg. Pavelec made 34 saves for the Jets, with two of his toughest stops coming in overtime. “It wasnt an easy game for both teams. It was the first game back and we didnt know what to expect a little bit,” said Pavelec, who stopped Mike Ribeiro to end the shootout. Smith stopped 27 shots for the visitors, including a pair of scoring chances in the final seconds of regulation. “For the most part I felt not too bad,” said Smith, whho was a member of Canadas gold medal-winning team in Sochi but didnt see any playing time.dddddddddddd “But like I said, it doesnt matter how you feel, you need to come out on the better side of things.” Hanzal put away a rebound to tie the game at 2-2 with Jets centre Jim Slater in the penalty box 6:40 into the third period. Winnipeg took advantage of a giveaway by Coyotes defenceman Zbynek Michalek to take the lead late in the second period. With Ekman-Larsson in the penalty box, Little intercepted Michaleks pass in the low slot and beat Smiths glove hand to make it 2-1. The teams wasted no time reminding fans of one of the differences between international hockey and the NHL game. Winnipegs Zach Bogosian and Phoenixs Rob Klinkhammer dropped the gloves just 78 seconds into the game after Klinkhammer shoved Bogosians defence partner Toby Enstrom into the boards. The Coyotes opened the scoring with an Ekman-Larsson wrist shot from the high slot that went in off the post 12:17 into the first period. It took the Jets less than three minutes to respond, as Wheelers shot from the corner hit Coyotes defenceman Michael Stone in the leg and bounced into the net. Smith was distracted earlier in the sequence by Winnipeg forward Dustin Byfuglien, and the Coyotes argued for an interference call. Smith and Coyotes coach Dave Tippett both said they disagreed with the non-call in their post-game comments. “Personally, I think if theres incidental contact in the net and then the puck goes in after, it shouldve been not a penalty, but it shouldnt have been allowed,” Smith said. Notes: Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. Anne, Man., a defenceman for Canadas Olympic gold medal-winning womens hockey team, performed the ceremonial puck drop. a The Jets welcomed back Slater, who missed 52 games with a sports hernia, and left-winger Evander Kane, who sat out the last six games before the Olympic break with a hand injury. a The Jets head to Nashville for a one-game road trip on Saturday, while the Coyotes play in Denver Friday night before heading home. a The teams have one remaining meeting, April 1 in Arizona. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / rom down the QEW, the Hamil WINNIPEG — Some played together in college, others may have played on the same professional teams, but Thursday evening those friendships get pushed aside as Canada once again tries to beat the United States in womens soccer. Its something the Canadians havent managed since 2001 but this time theyll have a home crowd edging close to 30,000 to cheer them on at Investors Group Field, the home of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. “Its a game that Canada wont dominate,” Canadian coach John Herdman said Wednesday after their final practice before the game. “Were not going to have 700 shots and 700 crosses, so the fans have got to be ready to really get behind us when we need (them). We know these games are always tough tight games, hopefully.” In club and varsity soccer, Canadians and Americans play side-by-side. Canadian captain Christine Sinclair, for example, is an attack partner of American star Alex Morgan on Portland Thorns FC of the National Womens Soccer League. But internationally its a different story as the neighbouring countries have developed a strong rivalry. Canada is ranked seventh in the world in womens soccer and the U.S. sits at No. 1, but American midfielder Lauren Holiday suggests those numbers dont necessarily reflect the way things play out on the field. “Every game is such a battle, you never know whos going to win,” says Holiday. “Every time we play them its such a fierce competition that . . . anything can happen.” The rivalry intensified after Canadas semifinal loss to the United States at the last Olympics. The U.S. team went on to win gold but Canada won the bronze medal, an event which has meant a lot for womens soccer. Herdman says the country now needs to do more capitalize on the strong base of players now developing across Canada. “Weve got the third largest playing population in the world and we cant produce a consistent podium team.” He says there are 350,000 girls playing soccer in Canada, compared with just 30,000 in perennial contender Japan. This game is just a friendly but it will give both national teams another chance to see how they stack up against a top tier opponent prior to next years Womens World Cup. And while Canada wont be playing there, the U.S. team might end up playing in Winnipeg, one of the venues for the 2015 event also being held in Vancouver, Edmonton, Ottawa, Montreal and Moncton. Herdman also said jokingly that this game is basically dedicated to midfielder Desiree Scott, a Winnipeg native who joined him at the final pre-game news conference. She will be playing live in front of her family for the first time in her national team career. “I think its going to be the Desi Scott show tomorrow,” said Herdman. "I think the whole of Manitobas going to come and see her in action. . . “Its a proud moment for the team. Weve all got a massive smile on our face cause the local girl gets to come home. Can you imagine playing in front of your mom and your family for the first time, no pressure Des.” Scott likes the buzz. “Im just trying to thrive off the excitement of playing at home,” said Scott, nicknamed “The Destroyer.” “And being in front of my family and friends, I think it will definitely give me that energy.” For both Herdman and interim head U.S. coach Jill Ellis, this is very much about preparing for the World Cup. “I think for our players its just a great opportunity to play against a quality opponent,” said Ellis, U.S. Soccers director of development who took over when Tom Sermanni was fired last month. “Im just hoping the crowd now will get a real sense of whats coming in 2015,” said Herdman. “This country will stop at some point. Téma: Jak postupovat / for contact with an offi (Sports Network) – The Boston Red Sox certainly looked like a team that was tired of hearing about a potential collapse down the stretch. Less than 24 hours after posting their highest run total of the season, the Red Sox seek a sweep of a quick two-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays. Boston headed into last nights opener on a five-game slide, its longest since beginning the season 0-6. The club also returned home after winning just once on a seven-game road trip, including losses in three of four at Toronto from Sept. 5-8. The Red Sox got a bit of revenge on Tuesday, getting a pair of homers from Dustin Pedroia in an 18-6 rout that gave Tim Wakefield his long-awaited 200th career victory. Wakefield had been winless in eight appearances since his last victory on July 24 before the 45-year-old limited the Blue Jays to five runs over six innings while getting plenty of run support. “Im just glad its over with. Its been a long road, but its definitely been worth the wait,” Wakefield said. Jacoby Ellsbury, who has a 17-game hitting streak, and Pedroia each had four hits, scored four times and combined for eight RBI to help the Red Sox move four games ahead of the Rays for the American League Wild Card spot. The Rays, who lost at Baltimore Tuesday night, come to Boston for a four-game series this weekend. Though third baseman Kevin Youkilis played for the first time in four games due to a nagging hip injury, designated hitter David Ortiz was removed before his first at-bat due to back spasms. His status for this game is unknown. Jose Bautista hit his major league-leading 42nd homer of the season and J.P. Téma: Jak postupovat / t. "Everyone has the notion that LONG BEACH, Calif. – Ryan Hunter-Reay, determined to rebound from a disappointing season, is off to a strong start in what he hopes will be another run toward the IndyCar championship. Hunter-Reay won the pole Saturday for the 40th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, knocking teammate James Hinchcliffe of Oakville, Ont., from the top spot while ensuring an all-Andretti Autosport front row. Hunter-Reay won three poles last year, but as his performance tapered off in the second half of the season, he was unable to defend his 2012 championship. He opened this year with a second-place finish at St. Petersburg, and now will try for his first win of the season Sunday at Long Beach. “It just comes down to this team giving me what I need when I need it,” the American said after turning a lap in 1 minute, 7.8219 seconds on the temporary course through the streets of downtown. Hinchcliffe wound up second after his lap at 1 minute, 7.9403 seconds. “If you are going to lose pole, it might as well be to a teammate,” Hinchcliffe said. Sebastien Bourdais was third, followed by Josef Newgarden, rookie Jack Hawksworth and Simon Pagenaud. Honda drivers made up five of the Fast Six spots, with Bourdais the only Chevrolet representative. “What a qualifying session — you never knew who was going to put in the best lap,” Hunter-Reay said. “It was anybodys session.” Well, not anybody. The session was surprising for who didnt advance into the later rounds. Defending race winner Takuma Sato didnt make it out of the first group, and was penalized for interfering with Hunter-Reay during his lap. The punishment stripped Sato of his two fastest laps in the session. “Tough qualifying session,” Sato said. Also failing to advance was Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan, making his second start for Target/Chip Ganassi Racing. In the next group, Will Power failed to move on for just the second time in his career. He last failed to advance out of the first round at Brazil last season. “Obviously, the team is starting a lot further back then we had hoped,” Power said. “We just have to try to make that work from where we are and do the best we can tomorrow.” Defending series champion Scott Dixon did advance into the second round, as did runner-up Helio Castroneves. But neither made it into the Fast Six round, shutting both Team Penske and Chip Ganassi Racing out of the final group. Juan Pablo Montoya continued to struggle in his return to IndyCar after seven seasons in NASCAR. As he was pushing for more speed on his last qualifying attempt, he lost control of his car and hit the wall. We just brushed the wall in turn four,” he said. “I was trying hard to get that extra two tenths and it didnt work out.” Also struggling on Saturday was Graham Rahal, who has not found much speed and qualified last in the 23-car field. Oriol Servia, making his first start of the season for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, also struggled in morning practice but picked up some speed in qualifying and advanced into the second round. Servia was eliminated in that round and will start 12th. “We tried to make more changes to get the balance in the car better and then tried some bigger ones for qualifying,” Rahal said. “We are just struggling with overall grip. Oriol had a big grip gain on alternate tires and I didnt feel it. We have a lot of work to do.” . Taman, the Saskatchewan Roughriders general manager, signed an extension that keeps him under contract with the CFL club through the 2017 season. Last month, Taman re-signed Chamblin as the clubs head coach for the next four seasons. “Corey Chamblin is a big part of making me look good,” Taman told reporters Wednesday. “I had a lot of faith in him when we hired him and he continues to show that.” However, Taman also received a promotion, adding the title of vice-president of football operations to his job description. “Im excited about this,” said Jim Hopson, the Riders president and chief executive officer. "I think we have a good team, a good organization and weve got some people who are very important to making us a good organization and Brendan is one of them. “We need continuity so with Brendan and Corey under contract through 2017 I feel really good as I look to the future.” Chamblin guided the Riders to a Grey Cup title last year, just his second with the CFL club. Taman certainly did his part, not only hiring Chamblin as head coach in 2012 but strengthening Saskatchewans 13 roster by acquiring slotback Geroy Simon — the leagues all-time leading receiver — from the B.C. Lions, hiring George Cortez as offensive co-ordinator and dipping into free agency to add such proven veterans as defensive linemen Ricky Foley and John Chick and defensive back Dwight Anderson. Saskatchewan finished second in the West Division with an 11-7 record — Calgary was first with a league-best 14-4 record — before downing B.C. 29-26 in the conference semifinal. That set up a showdown with the Stampeders at McMahon Stadium that the Riders won 35-13. Saskatchewan capped its season to remember by beating Hamilton 45-23 before a rabid Mosaic Stadium gathering of 44,710.ddddddddddddIt was the Riders fourth Grey Cup title but first one on home soil as well as being Tamans first CFL championship. “Last year was obviously a pretty special year, thats not a secret for anybody,” Taman said. "I was in the boardroom (Tuesday) and looked at our Grey Cups on the wall and I went from 66 to 89 to 07 to 13. "Theres 23-year gap from the first (to second), then theres 18 years and then theres six years. My goal this year is to make that less than six and ideally that would be one if we can do it. “Everyone has the notion that we went all-in last year and were very aggressive and thats very true. But this year is no different. Were driven to win in this business and this organization has been very successful over the last while and were going to continue to strive to do that.” Taman, a native of Saskatoon, has been the Riders general manager since 2010 and his previous deal was set to expire following the 2015 campaign. “Obviously its a real special day for me to do this,” Taman said. "I wanted to be here for a while and in this business thats not always the easiest thing to do. “Any good organization has sound, consistent relationships at the top. Jim is a great leader, we have a really good relationship, we have an open dialogue all the time. Hes a huge part of our success in this whole organization.” Taman also praised the work of player-personnel director Craig Smith, football research and development co-ordinator Terry Baskier and assistant GM Jeremy ODay. Taman went so far as to say ODay — a former Riders offensive lineman — will be a CFL general manager one day. “Im so fortunate to work with him,” Taman said. "Hes such a bright guy. “He brings a lot to the table and puts me in a good light because of how good he is.” ’ ’ ’ |

Watch the Senators vs. Penguins live tonight on TSN at 7pm et/4pm pt. The Senators led 2-0 early in the second period, but the Maple Leafs scored six of the games final seven goals to take the tilt in regulation. Toronto winger Phil Kessel capped his fifth career hat trick with the game-winning goal at 14:02 of the third period. Chris Neil posted two goals and an assist while Colin Greening also had a goal and an assist for the Senators. Craig Anderson allowed five goals on 36 shots in the loss. “I felt we played hard. We gave up some chances in the second, but I thought we settled it down there in the third and got back after them,” said Neil. “I dont think its a 6-3 hockey game, thats for sure. It was pretty close back and forth.” Ottawa fell to 12-10-5 as the visiting team this season after Saturdays setback. The Sens will close a three-game road trip when they visit St. Louis on Tuesday. Erik Karlsson had a goal and two assists in Decembers blowout win over the Pens. The talented defenseman has 13 points (3 goals, 10 assists) in 13 career games versus Pittsburgh. Anderson is 5-4-1 with a 2.24 goals against average in 12 career games against the Pens, while Fleury is 9-9-1 with a 3.41 GAA in this matchup. The Penguins and Senators met for the first of three scheduled encounters in 2013-14 on Dec. 23 in Ottawa, and the home team recorded a 5-0 rout. Along with a 5-1 road loss to the New York Rangers on Nov. 6 and a 5-1 setback against visiting Florida on Jan. 20, it marked the only time Pittsburgh was defeated by a margin of four or more goals this season. Pittsburgh had won three straight in the regular-season series against the Sens before that December loss and Ottawa enters Monday having lost four of five in the Steel City. That doesnt include last seasons playoff encounter in the Eastern Conference semifinals, which the top-seeded Pens won in five games. The Penguins enter Monday leading the East with 78 points, but the talented club was dealt a regulation loss Saturday at Phoenix. Mike Smith stopped 23- of-24 shots to help the Coyotes register a 3-1 victory over Pittsburgh in the desert. Evgeni Malkin had the only goal of the game for the Penguins, who had won four of five entering the contest. Malkin passed Ron Francis for fifth place on Pittsburghs all-time scoring list with the goal, which represented the Russians 614th career point. Marc-Andre Fleury gave up all three goals on 30 shots in the loss. “I thought we played a real good game and their guy made some really strong saves,” said Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby. “They played a pretty tight game and when you dont cash in on your chances youre not going to win.” Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang missed his second straight game due to an illness and he is questionable for Monday. Fellow Pens blueliner Olli Maatta is also questionable after getting hit in the face with a puck on Saturday. More than a month after signing the free agent centre, Bynum is expected to make his debut with Indiana on Tuesday night against Boston. ORLANDO, Fla. — Eric Winston was elected president of the NFL Players Association on Wednesday, three years after he was active for the union during the lockout. The 30-year-old offensive lineman was the Arizona Cardinals starting right tackle last season, his eighth in the league. He is currently a free agent. Winston succeeds Domonique Foxworth as NFLPA president. Foxworth was out of the league last season and so could not seek re-election. NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith tweeted: “Thank you to @Foxworth24 and all the Executive Committee for their leadership. Congratulations to Eric Winston. Lots of great work ahead.” The other candidates for president were New Orleans Saints tight end Ben Watson and former Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark, who is a free agent. Watson and Clark will both serve on the executive committee elected later Wednesday by the unions board of representatives. Clark joined Lorenzo Alexander and Jay Feely of the Cardinals, Zak DeOssie and Mark Herzlich of the Giants, Adam Vinatieri of the Colts, and Scott Wells of the Rams as new members of the executive commiittee.dddddddddddd Watson, Matt Hasselbeck of the Colts, and free agent Brian Waters were re-elected. Saints quarterback Drew Brees stepped down from the executive committee. Winston has played for Houston, Kansas City and Arizona since being chosen by the Texans in the third round of the 2006 draft. He played his first six NFL seasons with the Texans, joined the Chiefs in 2012, then moved to the Cardinals last season. Winston has started 112 consecutive games. He has served on the unions committees for finance and agent discipline and does community work on behalf of Shriners Hospital for Children. Winston was elected as a co-alternate union representative by the Texans in 2010. While in Kansas City, he drew plenty of national attention early in the 2012 season, when he criticized Chiefs fans who cheered when the teams then-quarterback, Matt Cassel, got a concussion during a game. “Its 100 per cent sickening,” Winston said that day. “Ive never, ever — and Ive been in some rough times on some rough teams — Ive never been more embarrassed in my life to play football than at that moment right there.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / p as they had been a SOCHI, Russia — No Dutch sweep this time. Martina Sablikova saw to that. Sablikova defended her Olympic speedskating title in the womens 5,000 metres Wednesday, knocking the Netherlands off the top step of the medal podium. The 26-year-old from the Czech Republic set a track record at Adler Arena with a time of six minutes 51.54 seconds. Its not like the Dutch didnt show up. They added two more medals to their record haul, as Ireen Wust took the silver in 6:54.28, while 35-year-old mother Carien Kleibeuker grabbed the bronze in 6:55.66. It was Wusts fourth medal of the Sochi Games, added to a gold in the 3,000 and silvers in the 1,000 and 1,500. Ivanie Blondin of Ottawa was the lone Canadian in the field, finishing 14th in 7:20.10, 28.56 seconds behind Sablikova. Racing against Sablikova in the seventh of eight pairs, Wust knew she had to push the pace early and hope to hang on. She built a sizeable lead but began to fade just past the midway point. Sablikova went right on by — and never slowed up. The standings were a reversal of the 3,000, when Wust beat Sablikova to deny the Czech skater a shot at repeating as a double gold medallist in the two longest womens events. But Sablikova was determined to hang on to her title in the 5,000, even dropping the 1,500 — an event she won bronze in four years ago |

Téma: Jak postupovat / d speculation that Ferrari was int KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs parted ways with veteran defensive back Dunta Robinson, who never quite lived up to expectations last season, and signed CFL wide receiver Weston Dressler on Friday. Robinson was just one year into a $13.75 million, three-year deal that the Chiefs hoped would provide a veteran presence in what became a vastly retooled defensive backfield. Instead, Robinson was slowed by a series of nagging injuries and appeared in only nine games, making 14 tackles and defending just two passes. He was also part of a defence that was torched by Indianapolis wide receivers in a loss that knocked Kansas City out of the playoffs. The move was widely expected not only because the 31-year-old Robinson struggled most of the season, gradually losing playing time to undrafted free agent Marcus Cooper, but also because the cash-strapped Chiefs would save more than $3 million. The Chiefs were bumping along the just below the salary cap at the beginning of the week, and theyre expected to make more moves — perhaps restructuring some of the long-term contracts signed by the previous regime — so that they can sign their draft class and be active in free agency. Kansas City is expected to lose Pro Bowl left tackle Branden Albert, who was franchised last season, though there are several in-house candidates to replace him. Offensive linemen Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz are also hitting free agency, as are defensive tackle Tyson Jackson, safety Kendrick Lewis and Pro Bowl punt returner Dexter McCluster. The move to sign Dressler, who spent the past six years in the CFL, could be in response to McCluster likely demanding a contract far more lucrative than the Chiefs are willing to pay. Dressler, a former North Dakota standout, caught 442 passes for 6,531 yards and 43 touchdowns for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, helping them win the Grey Cup this past season. Hes also proven that he can return kicks and punts, in essence many of the things McCluster did for the Chiefs. “Ever since the first time I touched a football, thats something I dreamed about, having an opportunity to play in the NFL, on the games biggest stage,” Dressler said during a recent news conference, when he was released by Saskatchewan and finalizing a deal with an NFL team. It was unclear at the time that his landing spot would be Kansas City. “To kind of get to that point now is pretty surreal,” Dressler said. The Chiefs didnt announce Dresslers signing until Friday, even though his name popped up on the leagues transaction report earlier in the week. Terms of his deal were not available. “Money wasnt a factor for me in this decision,” Dressler said. “Its a decision based on an opportunity I feel like I have a very good chance to make a football team.” . Speaking ahead of this weekends Bahrain Grand Prix, which will be a night race for the first time, Domenicali said rival engine manufacturers Mercedes and Renault have an advantage on Renault because their road-car divisions have more experience with fuel-efficient six-cylinder engines, which have come into F1 this year. “We know that other engine manufacturers have advanced knowledge because they use that technology in their road cars, so we knew it was not going to be easy,” Domenicali said on the official F1 website. “But we know the areas where we need to improve and falling into disappointment doesnt help.” “If Mercedes keeps the pace it will be very difficult to match them.” Ferrari has been well off the pace of the Mercedes team and Renault-powered Red Bull in the first two races in Austrralia and Malaysia, with Fernando Alonsos two fourth-place finishes the best the Italian team could manage.dddddddddddd Domenicalis discussions with Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel in the paddock at last weekends Malaysian Grand Prix sparked renewed speculation that Ferrari was interested in signing the German, but the Ferrari chief insisted his team was satisfied with the performance of current drivers Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen, who simply need a better car. “That is the urgent need, and it has to happen very soon,” Domenicali said. "So far Fernando has proved to be fast immediately. Kimi needs some time to understand the car, but you can see he is getting there. I am sure from the drivers side there will not be a problem. “Sebastian is a fantastic driver, a four-time champion. Thats a fact. Téma: Jak postupovat / for the Rockets. Aldri RENTON, Wash. — There is still no definitive date for when wide receiver Percy Harvin will make his Seattle Seahawks debut. And just as much of an unknown is what Harvins role will be when hes finally given the OK to get back in a game for the first time in a calendar year. The analysis of how Harvin would fit with the Seahawks first started when he was acquired in a trade with Minnesota in March, then was put on hold when Harvin underwent hip surgery to repair an injured labrum in early August. Its all restarted this week as Harvin returned to practice for the Seahawks, ahead of the initial timeline that was presented for his recovery. Coach Pete Carroll reiterated Thursday that Harvins return remains a day-to-day evaluation and made no promises about whether his debut would come on Monday night at St. Louis or is still a couple of weeks away. Harvin was not listed on the Seahawks injury report Thursday since he is not on the active roster. “Its a day-to-day, almost a drill-to-drill kind of situation to see if were managing him properly, to bring him back. It would be great to see him play this weekend, but thats not part of what were counting,” Carroll said Thursday. When he does return, Harvin will join an offence that will always be based around the run first and spreads the ball to its various pass catchers. Headed into Mondays game — which will mark the midway point of the season for Seattle — no receiver has more than Golden Tates 27 catches and six players have at least 10 receptions. The Seahawks leader in touchdown catches is Zach Miller, with three, while Jermaine Kearse is the only other player with more than one TD catch with two of his eight receptions going for touchdowns. How will Harvin fit in? He thinks itll be very similar to his first couple of seasons with Minnesota, when he was working under current Seattle offensive co-ordinator Darrell Bevell. “It should be a lot similar especially dating back to my first two years when coach Bevell was my offensive co-ordinator with the Vikings,” Harvin said. “I expect it to be a lot similar. I dont expect pretty much anything to change.” Sidney Rice was Harvins teammate during those two seasons with the Vikings, before signing with the Seahawks before the 2011 season. The best season of Rices career was 2009, when he caught 83 passes for 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns and often found himself with single coverage because Harvin was on the field. “Put a package in and let him make plays; that was his role,” Rice said. “He mostly played in the slot but he did play on the outside quite a bit depending on what packages we had in for him. Im sure eventually once he gets healthy well start seeing the all-around Percy Harvin, lining up on the outside, on the inside, running back, who knows whats going to come of that.” While Harvin is known for his blazing speed, for much of his career it hasnt been used to try to beat defences deep downfield. Harvin has caught 280 passes in his career and 210 of those receptions have come either behind the line of scrimmage or within the first 10 yards of the snap, according to STATS Inc. Whats made Harvin so successful is his ability to turn those short catches into big plays. For his career, Harvin is averaging nearly 7 yards after catch, meaning the many quick screens that were thrown his way with the Vikings were turned into meaningful gains. Last season, before being injured against Seattle in Week 9, Harvin was averaging 8.9 yards after catch. That was the best in the NFL for any wide receiver with more than 10 receptions. “Hes a gifted athlete,” Bevell said. “Hes got great quickness, he can make guys miss. Hes got great toughness. He runs like Marshawn (Lynch) once he has the ball. He can run through people, he can run around people. He can make people miss. All those things together help him make those big plays.” .C. – Bernhard Langer overcame a bad start Saturday to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Champions Tours Greater Hickory Classic. Up 2-1 in their first playoff series since 2011, the Blazers didnt want to mess up Game 4, especially in front of their hometown fans. “In the words of Chuck — Charles Barkley — we were playing like wussies,” Portland guard Wesley Matthews said. “That was the message to each other.” Whatever was said, the Trail Blazers pulled out of their funk and went on to defeat the Rockets 123-120 in overtime Sunday night to take a 3-1 advantage in the series that moves to Houston on Wednesday. LaMarcus Aldridge had 29 points and 10 rebounds in the first win for the home team in the series, while Nicolas Batum added 25 points. It was the third game in the series decided in overtime. The Blazers havent advanced out of the first round since 2000. Portland also hasnt held a 3-1 advantage in a series since the 2000 Western Conference semifinals against Utah, which the Blazers won 4-1. James Harden had 28 points and Dwight Howard added 25 points and 14 rebounds for the Rockets. “The playoffs are a grind,” Houston coach Kevin McHale said. “Its a different game than the regular season. Youve got to be built for the grind.” Portland trailed by as many as 11 points, but rallied in the fourth quarter. Mo Williams 3-pointer put the Blazers in front 105-104 with 18.9 seconds left. Dorell Wright missed the first of two free throws, making it 106-104 with 8.3 seconds to go. Howard dunked off a feed from Harden with 3.6 seconds left to tie it and Williams missed a 3 at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Chandler Parsons was hit with a flagrant foul on Aldridge, who made both free throws to give the Blazers the lead to start off OT. Batum scooped up a layup before adding a 3-pointer and Damian Lillard made a layup to put Portland ahead 117-110. Houston rookie Troy Daniels nailed a 3 and Harden landed a jumper to narrow it to 119-117, but Lillard made free throws to extend the lead to four points with 17 seconds left. Aldridge missed a pair of free throws and Daniels was fouled by Wright on a 3-point attempt and made all three shots to narrow it to 121-120 with 8.9 seconds left. After a Portland timeout, Mo Williams made free throws for the final margin.dddddddddddd “It was tough,” Aldridge said. “I thought it was a gut-check by everybody. I thought our guys took on the challenge.” Aldridge opened Portlands return to the playoffs with a franchise post-season-best 46 points in the Blazers 122-120 overtime victory in Game 1, then followed it up with 43 points in the 112-105 win. The Rockets won the third, 121-116 in overtime on Friday night at the Moda Center. McHale again started Omer Asik in place of Terrence Jones. Asik had success against Aldridge in Game 3, helping to hold Portlands All-Star to 23 points. The two teams played closely for most of the first quarter, but the Rockets took a 29-22 lead after an 11-4 run highlighted by two straight 3-pointers from Daniels. Daniels, who spent time in the D-League this season and only made his NBA debut on March. 5, was the unlikely hero of Game 3 when he drained a 3 with 11.9 seconds to go in OT that proved to be the winner. Houston led 61-51 at the half, led by Parsons with 19 points. The Rockets maintained the lead through the third quarter and Hardens jumper from the top of the key stretched it to 92-84 with 8:31 left. Portland got within 94-91 on Batums layup with 6:35 left. Lillards 3-pointer tied it at 94, but Harden answered with his 3 for the Rockets. Aldridge made a layup to put Portland up 102-97, but Howard made three of four free throws to narrow it before making two big blocks. Harden hit free throws to tie it at 102 with 1:11 left. Aldridge missed a layup and Harden hit another two foul shots to give the Rockets back the lead. Parsons finished with 26 points for the Rockets. “Everything you do is magnified and all the little things that were not doing cost you … and were down 1-3 because of it,” Parsons said. Téma: Jak postupovat / back to inside linebac NEW YORK — Ernesto Frieri has lost his job as Los Angeles Angels closer — at least for a while. Angels manager Mike Scioscia says setup man Joe Smith will step into the stopper role until Frieri works out his problems beginning Friday night when the Angels play the New York Yankees. “We want to get Ernie off of that treadmill and let him get an inning or two where he can try to make some adjustments,” Scioscia said. “Historically, Ernie has responded well to this. We need him, and I think this is the best route to take to get to the final solution we want.” The move comes two days after Frieri allowed four runs and three hits while failing to protect a lead for the Angels in a loss at Washington. It was his second blown save this season in four chances. Frieri is 0-2 with a 9.35 ERA in 10 appearances this year. Hes allowed five home runs, a problem that plagued him last season when he was tagged for 11 homers and briefly lost the closer job. Scioscia said Frieri will be used at less stressful times, not in setup situations. The eighth-inning role will be filled by matchups. “To put him in setup role right now would defeat the purpose, because youre going to put him in a high-leverage situation,” Scioscia said. “If youre ready for the eighth inning, youre ready for the ninth.” “Mechanically hes fine,” Scioscia said. “At times hes overthrowing, and when he does, hes missing some spots. Hes not a fine control guy, but he definitely knows what area he wants to throw the ball, and hes usually pretty good at getting it there.” Smith signed a $15.75 million, three-year contract with the Angels this winter. In his eighth season, the 30-year-old right-hander is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA, but 10 of his 11 appearances have been scoreless. He has three career saves in 450 games with the Mets, Indians and Angels. Téma: Jak postupovat / Premier League finish. He ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Cleveland Indians made their first visit this season to Angel Stadium and found an old friend in the closers role for the other team — Joe Smith. The right-hander, who spent the previous five seasons with the Indians, got three outs in the ninth inning to preserve a 6-3 victory for Los Angeles on Monday night for his first save with the Angels. His role changed after a series of poor outings by Ernesto Frieri. “I dont think your attitude changes,” Smith said. “I mean, if youre coming on in the seventh or eighth inning, the goal is the same: get out of the inning with a zero and hand the ball off to the next guy. Now, the goal is to get out of the inning with a zero and slap hands. It doesnt matter what inning Im throwing. I pitch people the same.” Smith retired Carlos Santana on a foul pop behind the plate, then gave up a single to pinch-hitter David Murphy before retiring Michael Brantley on a fielders choice grounder and Asdrubal Cabrera on a line drove to centre field. “When hes on your team, hes easy to root for,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “Im one of his biggest fans — and I only had the opportunity to have him for one year. For the guys who were around him longer than that, I can see why they like him so much. Hes a pros pro. I remember a conversation I had with Smitty when he was going through free agency, and I remember telling him flat out: We want you back so bad. But if we dont get you back, I hope you break the bank.” Smith, who signed a three-year, $15.75 million contract in November, was the setup man last year for the Tribe and got three saves along the way. “Joe could be successful anywhere they put him,” Francona said. Fernando Salas (2-0) pitched a hitless eighth inning and got credit for the victory after the Angels broke a 3-all tie in the bottom half with an RBI single by Mike Trout and a two-run triple by Raul Ibanez against Justin Masterson (0-1). Masterson gave up six runs and seven hits in 7 1-3 innings after getting a no-decision in each of his first five starts. The right-hander hasnt posted a victory since beating the Angels 3-1 last Aug. 21 at the “Big A.” Nick Swisher misplayed J.B. Shucks leadoff grounder to first base in the eighth for an error, and Erick Aybar bunted Shuck to second before Trout singled to left on a full-count pitch to snap a 3-all tie. Albert Pujols was walked intentionally in front of Ibanez, who capped the scoring with his triple to right-centre on Mastersons 113th and final pitch. Tyler Skaggs allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings and struck out six. The left-hander, staked to a 1-0 lead on Pujols RBI groundout in the first, retired his first 10 batters before giving up a double by Swisher, a walk to Jason Kipnis and Santanas second homer of the season into the left field bullpen. “Tyler hung a curveball to Santana, but other than that, he threw the ball awesome,” Smith said. “If our starters go seven and give up three every time, thats great. Keep it rolling. It only makes it easier on us — especially with this offence.” Santana, the Indians switch-hitting third baseman, came in batting .122 over his first 24 games and was 3 for 22 with men in scoring position. But Francona said before the game that he wasnt ready to drop Santana out of the cleanup spot, where he has been in every game hes played. The Angels tied it in the fifth on a two-out, two-run double down the right field line by Aybar after Masterson issued a leadoff walk to Ian Stewart and a single by David Freese. Stewart started at third base while Freese was the designated hitter on his 31st birthday. The Indians, who had just gotten swept in a series at San Francisco, were 2 for 20 with runners in scoring position during that three-game set and totalled just five runs — while their 4-5-6 hitters were a combined 0 for 29. NOTES: The Angels flight from New York didnt get in until 5:15 a.m. local time after a 3-2 loss at Yankee Stadium on Sunday that ended their 4-5 road trip. “I wish they played 20 innings,” Francona said. … Angels LF Josh Hamilton had his cast taken off Monday and is wearing a splint, the next step toward beginning his strength exercises and resuming baseball activities. Pochettino replaced Tim Sherwood, who was fired on May 13 after just five months in the job following Tottenhams sixth-place finish in the league. The 42-year-old Pochettino developed a strong reputation for playing a positive, attacking brand of football in his 18 months at Southampton, which he joined from Spanish side Espanyol when he replaced Nigel Adkins. Southampton finished eighth in the standings last season, with its highest Premier League points haul of 56. “This is a club with tremendous history and prestige and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to be its head coach,” Pochettino said. “There is an abundance of top-class talent at the club and I am looking forward to starting work with the squad. We are determined to give the supporters the kind of attacking football and success that we are all looking to achieve.” Pochettino is the eighth permanent manager to be appointed in Spurs chairman Daniel Levys 13 years at the club. “In Mauricio I believe we have a head coach who, with his high energy, attacking football, will embrace the style of play we associate with our club,” Levy said in a statement. “He has a proven ability to develop each player as an individual, whilst building great team spirit and a winning mentality. We have a talented squad that Mauricio is excited to be coaching nexxt season.dddddddddddd” Tottenham aspires to qualify for the Champions League again, having played one season alongside Europes elite in 2010-11. Following the sale of winger Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for 100 million euros (then $132 million), the North-London club went through a chaotic season that has featured defeats of 6-0 and 5-1 to Manchester City, 5-0 at home to Liverpool and a change of manager when Andre Villas-Boas was replaced by Sherwood. Pochettinos arrival could also help relaunch the career of forward Erik Lamela, who has struggled to adapt to the Premier League and was hampered by a series of injuries since joining the club for an estimated 30 million pounds ($50.41 million) fee. Although he was beaten twice by Sherwood last season, the former Espanyol boss led Southampton to its highest-ever Premier League finish. He will keep working with his own staff, with assistant coach Jesus Perez, first team coach Miguel DAgostino and goalkeeper coach Toni Jimenez all following him to White Hart Lane. Southampton said it has begun its search for a “high-calibre” manager, with Sherwood reportedly an option to replace Pochettino alongside the likes of Malky Mackay, Steve McClaren, Murat Yakin and Michael Laudrup. “The club has been on a constant path of growth since the arrival of (the late owner) Markus Liebherr in 2009,” Saints chairman Ralph Krueger said. “This growth took place before Mauricio came, it continued strongly under his leadership, and it will continue into the next season.” ’ ’ ’ |

SAN FRANCISCO — Mike Leake has gotten stronger every year, and his fastball velocity has increased as a result. Even so, he still doesnt know where all those strikeouts came from. Leake allowed four hits in eight innings and had a career-high 12 strikeouts in the Cincinnati Reds 3-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night. “It didnt feel like that many,” said Leake, who allowed one run and walked one, which was intentional. “But I guess its a big accomplishment. Im not high on strikeouts.” Cincinnati manager Bryan Price thinks Leake (6-6) could be a strikeout pitcher if that was his goal. “Hes pretty consistent hitting 93, 94 mph with his fastball,” said the former pitching coach. “Thats not a fastball you have to apologize for. He could throw more pitches and be less effective but strike out more guys.” Brandon Phillips had three hits, including a home run and double, and scored twice in his return to the lineup for the Reds, who won their fifth in six games. Leake, still looking for his first major league shutout, didnt try to talk his way onto the mound for the ninth. He hasnt pitched a complete game in nearly two years. Aroldis Chapman worked the ninth for his 15th save in 16 chances. “We have a good closer, why not use him?” Leake said. Jay Bruce and Todd Frazier each added two hits for the Reds. Bruce doubled in the seventh and has an extra-base hit in each of his last seven games, the longest streak by a Reds player since Dave Parker did it in eight straight in 1986. “We seem to play well here,” Bruce said. “With this pitching staff, if you put runs on the board, you have a chance.” Adam Duvall, making his major league debut, hit a home run for the Giants, who lost for the 12th time in 16 games. Ryan Vogelsong (5-4) allowed a run on five hits over six innings one day after Tim Lincecum threw a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres. He struck out seven and walked one. “I rubbed up against him before the game, but it didnt work,” Vogelsong said. “I just wasnt good enough.” Jean Machi, who allowed Phillips home run leading off the seventh, had his scoreless sstreak end at 25 1-3 innings.dddddddddddd Zack Cozart and Ryan Ludwick also drove in runs for the Reds, who have won eight of their last 10 games, including playoffs, in San Francisco. The Reds ended a scoreless duel with a run in the fifth. Phillips, who missed the last three games with a bruised heel, led off with a single. Two outs later, Cozart doubled him home. Bruce followed Phillips homer with a double and scored on Ludwicks single. Duvall hit a 0-2 pitch from Leake into the left field bleachers to put the Giants on the scoreboard. “Thats a feeling Ill never forget running the bases,” Duvall said. “I tried to tell myself it was the same game, just a bigger crowd.” Leake allowed a two-out double to Buster Posey in the first and then retired 15 of the next 16 hitters before Hunter Pences triple in the sixth. Leake improved to 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA in four starts at AT&T Park. The Giants also threw out two runners at home. Billy Hamilton tried to score on Devin Mesoracos shallow fly to second baseman Joe Panik in the sixth, and Brandon Crawford nailed Mesoracso trying to score on Phillips double to centre field in the eighth. Téma: Jak postupovat / two posts in the p MONTREAL — Rachel Homan and Team Canada have served notice theyre ready to defend their title at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. The defending champions grabbed the early lead and held on for a 9-6 win in nine ends over Quebecs Allison Ross on Sunday to emerge from the second day of play at the Maurice Richard Arena as the lone team yet to lose a match. “Its where I hoped wed be,” said 24-year-old Homan (3-0). “You never know whats going to happen, but the teams playing really well. Weve just got to keep rolling.” With previous victories of 8-3 over Manitoba and 9-3 over Ontario, both in eight ends, they have piled up points against some highly-regarded teams without yet having to go the full 10 ends. But Homan and the team were most concerned about giving up three to Quebec (0-4) in the second, which drew a roar from the 2,281 in the seats. “We gave up three in two, but thats alright — mistakes will happen,” said Homan. “Were learning the ice and different draws will be different weights.” “I underthrew two halfway hits and that didnt turn out well and then Rachel threw one we thought was good but it sailed off,” said Team Canada third Emma Miskew. "We got tricked a little on either the speed or the weight. “We didnt throw any more finesse shots after that because it tricked us a little.” The evening draws saw two matches go to extra ends as both New Brunswick and P.E.I. pulled off victories. New Brunswicks Andrea Crawford (2-1) scored a single in the 11th end to take a 4-3 win over British Columbias 22-year-old skip Kesa Van Osch (1-3). And Kim Dolan (1-2) of P.E.I got her first victory of the tournament, 7-6 over Quebec in 11 ends. In the other late draws, Newfoundlands Heather Strong (3-1) edged Yukons Sarah Koltun (1-2) 6-5. Koltun scored singles in the ninth and 10th ends but fell short of the comeback. And Albertas Val Sweeting (3-1) scored three in the sixth end en route to a 5-4 victory over Nova Scotias Heather Smith (1-2). The afternoon draw saw some wild finishes. Stefanie Lawton (2-1) of Saskatchewan tied her game up with two in the ninth and then stole two in the 10th to win 8-6 over Sweeting. “Tied up coming home, without hammer, we know what we have to do,” said Lawton, whose side gave up two in the 10th to lose 5-4 to Manitoba in the morning draw. "We have to put up two guards and get one on the button. “We got away with one when they kissed the guard and bit and I was able to put another on top of that and put the pressure on them. Theres going to be lots of games that will be battles. You just have to keep plugging away.” Another cliffhanger saw Manitobas Chelsea Carey (2-1) get the point she needed in the 10th to defeat the B.C. side 7-6. And Ontarios Allison Flaxey (1-2) scored two in the 10th and a steal of one in an extra end to down Newfoundland by 8-7. Homan won last years Scotties as skip of Team Ontario, beating Jennifer Jones Winnipeg rink in the final. Jones isnt at this years tournament, having won an ultra-competitive qualifying tournament to represent Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Other top teams bowed out in their provincial championships, some citing mental fatigue from trying to make the Olympic team. But Homans side was spared that because they qualified automatically for the Scotties as the defending champions. “That definitely helped us,” said Miskew. “Theres a lot of new faces here, but its nice to see a lot of young teams here.” “We definitely have room to improve. We had a bad end but we were able to bounce back, so that was important for us. It seems every game you get a little better and thats our goal.” Team Canada is part of the youth movement. Homan and Miskew are both 24, while second Alison Kreviazuk is 25. Theyve been playing together since they were young kids. Lead Lisa Weagle, 28, joined them later. Building a big lead in the morning draw against Ontario allowed them to give some playing time to their alternate, Stephanie LeDrew, who substituted for Weagle for the final two ends. “Its good to have her throw some shots and see the lines,” Homan said of LeDrew. "You never know during a week if youre going to have to use her or not. “Hopefully not. Hopefully shell just be there to cheer us on, but its good to get her in early.” LeDrew normally plays for Hollie Nicols Toronto rink, but she was brought in as an alternate by Homan for last years Scotties in Kingston, Ont., as well as for the 2013 womens world championship in Riga, Latvia. She got into three matches last year. “I know what it is to be prepared to jump in at a moments notice,” said LeDrew. “I actually went for a jog around the arena in the sixth end to be prepared to go in the seventh, so I was warmed up and ready to rock.” LeDrew said it is usually a team decision to get the alternate some playing time. “It tends to be on the ice between ends, if they have a big lead going,” she said. "They see it as a good opportunity to throw the alternate in. “They also want to get me in because I have to play in two games, for at least one end in each game, in order to be eligible for the jewelry (prizes) at the end of the week — the diamonds. So theyre being good to me.” The match also pitted sister against sister as Alison Kreviazuk faced Lynn Kreviazuk, the Ontario second. “Actually, I havent played against Lynn in a few years, so this was kind of a first for me,” Alison Kreviazuk said of her 22-year-old sister. "We get along great, so theres nothing negative. “They played really well, they just had a few bad breaks. I know shell pick it up for the next one.” The morning draw saw more one-sided wins as Yukon downed P.E.I. by 10-3 in eight ends. Nova Scotia, beat New Brunswick by 12-2, also in eight ends. Yukon scored five in the eighth end to prompt P.E.I. to concede, while Nova Scotia had ends of four and five points in their romp over New Brunswick. The Canadian duo finished with a four-run time of three minutes 50.MONTREAL — Brendan Gallagher felt a little hard done by the referees. In the final minute of play in Winnipegs 2-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday, Gallagher was roughed up by three different Jets players, preventing him from leaving the offensive zone. With their net empty, and an extra player on the ice for a Canadiens team looking for the equalizer, Gallagher was kept on the wrong side of the blue-line for roughly 20 seconds, keeping his team from entering Winnipegs zone. Gallagher was crosschecked into the net by Zach Bogosian, punched and then elbowed in the head by goaltender Al Montoya in the crease, and then elbowed again by defenceman Jacob Trouba. There was no call on the play. “There could have been five penalties there,” said head coach Michel Therrien, who watched the replay before speaking to the media. “Were definitely going to ask the league for explications. Its very frustrating. It could have given us the chance to tie the game.” But Montoya, who made 30 saves for his 10th win of the season, wasnt buying any of it, and suggested the Habs forward was doing his best to stay in the zone and draw a penalty. “No. 11?” Montoya asked, apparently not knowing Gallagher by name. “We were all caught up. The referees saw that. They were there. You know he was doing something for a reason.” After the game, defenceman Josh Gorges spoke to the press on Gallaghers behalf, calling the five-foot-nine forward too “fired up” and “heated” to address questions about the games final minute. “I have to be careful with what I say,” said Gorges. “It was pretty evident they were not allowing him to get out of the zone. He took a punch to the head from the goalie, got tripped up from the defenceman, and the guy coming off the bench gave him another shot.” To make matters worse, Gallagher made three trips to the penalty box during the game, for roughing, holding, and tripping. He finished the game with two shots, six penalty-minutes and a minus-1 rating. “I cant comment on how (the referees) feel towards any one individual player,” said Gorges. “I dont know if theres a grudge or something. Its too bad.” With the game tied at 1-1 going into the third period, Michael Frolik scored the eventual winner at 1:04 after a Winnipeg dump-in was mishandled by netminder Carey Price. Thee Jets captain Andrew Ladd took the puck off Prices stick, and found a streaking Frolik in front of the net.dddddddddddd The Canadiens (29-21-6) kept the pressure on Montoya and the Jets in the final frame, but couldnt benefit from two power plays. Winnipeg held on for their eighth win in 10 games since Paul Maurice took over as head coach on Jan. 12. The Jets (27-25-5) are still in last place in the Central Division, but are only four points off the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Winnipeg has now won four of its last five on the road, and beat the Canadiens for the first time in seven encounters. “Weve made some pretty big strides,” said Maurice. "Theres still a lot to cover. Its what we want our team to look like. We want to define what the Winnipeg Jets game is. And thats going to take a long time to do. “Were big and were fast and were young. And we want to use that. We want to be aggressive with our size and our speed.” The Jets benefited from good speed by Tobias Enstrom in the second period when he opened the scoring at 9:13 on a great individual effort. The Winnipeg defenceman carried the puck along the end boards, circled the net and squeezed a shot under Prices glove on the wraparound for his sixth of the year. After hitting two posts in the period, the Canadiens got their equalizer courtesy of a quick release wrister by Brian Gionta at 17:06. While playing 4-on-4 hockey, the Canadiens captain took a pass from Tomas Plekanec on his backhand, quickly switched to the forehand and fired home a sharp shot into the roof of the net. And despite the incident with Gallagher in the dying seconds, Gorges thought the Canadiens shouldnt have left it so late. “Thats not what happened tonight, that wasnt the difference,” said Gorges of the altercation. “But it was a frustrating end to the game.” Price, playing his second game in as many days, made 33 saves in the loss. NOTES: Michael Bournival was back in the Canadiens lineup after missing Saturdays game with the flu. Christian Thomas dressed for the second straight game, while George Parros was a healthy scratch. a The Jets were without Evander Kane, the teams third-best goal scorer. Téma: Jak postupovat / ots back with a round of 69 t MINNEAPOLIS – The Phoenix Suns did what theyve done all season — come from out of nowhere to win a game it appeared they had lost. After Goran Dragic and the Suns burned the Minnesota Timberwolves with a stunning comeback, Kevin Love torched some of his teammates. Dragic had 26 points, nine assists and six rebounds, and Gerald Greens baseline jumper with 3.9 seconds completed a rally from six points down with less than two minutes to play in a 104-103 victory over the Timberwolves on Wednesday night. The Suns (21-13) closed the game on a 7-0 run for maybe their most improbable win in a season full of them. Channing Frye scored 22 points and hit five 3-pointers and Green finished with 14 points for Phoenix, which was playing the second game of a back-to-back and is still missing starting guard Eric Bledsoe. “We just have confidence in each other and I think we just want to continue to play our way of basketball,” Frye said. The Timberwolves have no such thing right now. Kevin Martin scored 20 points, but his runner at the buzzer clanked off the rim. Nikola Pekovic and Love combined to shoot 10 for 36 and the Timberwolves failed to get over .500 on their seventh straight try. They are 0-10 in games decided by four points or less this season, but the thing that troubled Love most was seeing J.J. Barea and Dante Cunningham sulking at the end of the bench in the final quarter. “We all need to be in this together,” Love said. “That kind of (ticks) me off. Were supposed to be a team.” Love didnt call out either veteran by name, but the body language for Barea and Cunningham in the fourth made them easily identifiable. “If and when I did that last year when maybe I didnt sit out for the game for all 48 minutes and so on and so forth, they would have killed me,” Love said, referring to him missing many games last year with a broken hand. “They wouldve aired me out. Thats tough. Its two guys that we expect more from them. I think they expect more from themselves.” The Wolves led by nine with 4:16 to play and were up 103-97 with 1:36 to go. But as is usual in this unlikely season in Phoenix, the Suns never gave in. P.J. Tucker hit two free throws, Dragic scored off a steal, Markieff Morris hit another freebie and Green, the former Timberwolves flop, hit a jumper with the shot clock winding down to seal it. The Wolves committed three turnovers in the final minute, the last on an errant pass from Ricky Rubio that gave the Suns the ball with 16 seconds to go. “I think we play better with our backs to the wall, but I dont think nobody in this locker room wants to ever be in that situation,” Green said. “We want to finish out games better.” Love had 15 points on 4-for-20 shooting with 12 rebounds and Pekovic had 17 points on 6-for-16 shooting with 12 boards. Miles Plumlee had 11 points and nine boards before fouling out and Marcus Morris had 10 points and five boards for the Suns, who just keep surprising people. Martin had his 20 points early in the third quarter and Corey Brewers activity on defence and ability to get out in transition keyed a 30-19 period for the Wolves, who were rattled in the first 24 minutes by the Suns rugged defence and the way the game was being called. Love and coach Rick Adelman picked each picked up technical fouls for arguing with the officials, and the Timberwolves star missed 10 of his 12 shots in the first half. Pekovic didnt fare much better, going 1 for 8 from the field and having all kinds of difficulty with Plumlees athleticism in the paint. The Suns had plenty to complain about themselves. But they never got rattled. And it paid off. “They kept their composure,” Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said. “They didnt get panicked. They made some stops. Thats the key. We really buckled down at the end. They were kind of scrambling there.” NOTES: Chase Budinger made his season debut for the Wolves after missing the first 34 games with an injured left knee. Téma: Jak postupovat / le it here with so MILWAUKEE – The playoff-bound Toronto Raptors found themselves trailing the hapless Milwaukee Bucks by nine points at halftime. DeMar DeRozan made sure the Raptors recovered to continue their push for post-season position. The Toronto guard scored 15 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and the Raptors beat the Milwaukee Bucks 102-98 Saturday night to keep pace with the Chicago Bulls for the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. “We cant look at a teams record, come in here and think this is going to be a cakewalk,” DeRozan said. “That team came out here and played extremely hard. They kind of blindsided us and we had to fight the whole game.” After the Raptors gave up 38 points in the paint to trail 56-47 at halftime, coach Dwane Casey lit into his team at halftime. “We let them shoot 58 per cent in the first half and I cant accept that,” Casey said. “The first half, we were playing in mud. Standing up straight and it wasnt just the starters. Everybody who was in there.” Toronto is tied the Bulls, who beat Washington on Saturday night, at 45-32 with five games to play. Milwaukee fell to an NBA-worst 14-63, guaranteeing the teams worst record in its 45-year history. “We want to win, but I think if we can play this competitive as a team every night, I think there are some better days to come,” said Milwaukees John Henson, who had 23 points and nine rebounds in 39 minutes. Greivis Vasquez tied a season-high with 26 points for Toronto, which has won three consecutive games and six of seven. Vasquez, who averages 9.1 points, made up the scoring lost when starting point guard Kyle Lowry missed the game with a bruised left kneecap. “Coach jumped on us (at halftime) and we reacted pretty well,” Vasquez said. “In the second half we came to play.” DeRozan made six free throws in the final 24 seconds to seal the victory. “We always find ways to fight through,” DeRozan said. “We tried to turn up the aggressiveness, especially in the fourth quarter.” Khris Middleton scored 20 points for Milwaukee, which has lost 13 of 14 games. Middleton made 6 of 9 shots after a shooting slump in which he made 14 of 41 over the past four games. DeRozan made a pair of free throws to give the Raptors a 98-94 lead with 24 seconds left. Giannis Antetokounmpo then made two free throws to pull Milwaukee within 98-96 with 20 seconds left. DeRozan made two free throws to give Toronto a 100-96 lead with 18.6 seconds to go. Jeff Adrien dunked with 11 seconds left, but DeRozan made two more free throws to cap the scoring. Both teams played short-handed for the second consecutive night. Lowry and starting forward Amir Johnson were out with injuries for Toronto. Milwaukee had only eight players available due to injuries. The Bucks was 1 of 9 from 3-point range while Toronto was 12 of 27. “That is where the difference was,” Milwaukee coach Larry Drew said. “If you look at all the other categories, I believe we outscored them in the paint, more assists. A lot of good things we did do, but the 3-point line we did not do a good job defending.” There were nine lead changes in the fourth quarter, but Vasquez hit a 3-pointer to give Toronto the lead for good at 86-84 with 5:24 left. DeRozan then hit a free throw and made a 22-foot jumper to give the Raptors an 89-84 lead. The Bucks pulled within 89-88, but DeRozan scored on a driving runner and Jonas Valanciunas converted a 3-point play to give the Raptors a 94-88 lead with 1:43 to go. A sprained right knee derailed any hope of making a run. Now Scheifele is healthy, and Team Canada heads into the playoff round at the world hockey championship with legitimate medal aspirations thanks in part to his progression. “Every game hes got better and better,” coach Dave Tippett said. “Hes been good in the faceoff dot, puck control. … Were going to need everybody to be a good team in the quarter-final, and Scheif, his game has improved every game we played.” Scheifele assisted on Ryan Elliss overtime winner against Sweden, scored against Norway and is making use of his increased ice time. Along with the Toronto Maple Leafs Morgan Rielly and Nazem Kadri and the Calgary Flames Sean Monahan, the 21-year-old Jets centre is making big strides in Minsk. “You just gain experience,” Scheifele said. “You play against different kinds of hockey. Its just kind of a matter of learning how to adapt to who youre playing against, what kind of competition youre coming against. Obviously just playing with and against the best players in the world helps.” Each game is a new test for the young Canadian team, but Scheifeles journey to the world championships showed Paul Maurice something. Maurice, his coach in Winnipeg and an assistant to Tippett at this tournament, was impressed by how hard Scheifele worked to recover from a sprained MCL to be ready. At first, the coaching staff saw a player who hadnt experienced game action in more than two months. Then Maurice saw the player who was so vital to the Jets when healthy. “Hes responded like Mark does: He just got better,” Maurice said. “He didnt play a lot in the (first) few games and kept working hard in practice and hed get his handful of shifts one night and show you something in each shift. Dave Tippett is really strong at recognizing that in players during games, so hes gotten more and more opportunity.” Scheifele, who is expected to again centre the fourth line in Thursdays quarter-final game against Finland, had a leg up on Monahan going in because he had a little more experience. But he wasnt quite himself. That made Scheifele the 13th forward and his ice time dropped. The Kitchener, Ont., native played just 2:20 in the second game against Slovakia and then 2:34 the next one against the Czech Republic. A leg injury to Alex Burrows — who practised Wednesday and is set to return against Finland after a two-game absence — gave Scheifele another chance. His patience set up arguably Canadas biggest goal of the tournament, and he scored another to help ensure first place in the group. “I think every game I kind of get a little more ice, a little more comfortable,” Scheifele said. “Every game, just getting my legs under me, and thats the biggest thing. I feel more comfortable every game, and I just got to continue that.” The tests are just beginning for the world championship rookies, including 20-year-old Flames prospect Johnny Gaudreau, whose U.S. team faces the Czech Republic on Thursday for the righht to face the winner of Canada-Finland.dddddddddddd “Playing with NHL players and playing against NHL players obviously will help me in my game and help me develop as a player,” Gaudreau said. “Playing college the last three years I felt this would be the best opportunity to help me become a better pro.” Olli Jokinen, a teammate of Scheifeles with the Jets and captain of Finland, agrees wholeheartedly. “Everybodys goal is to make the playoffs and have a long run. At the same time with the younger players coming here, I think for them understanding the games like this. Its like a Game 7 in the playoffs,” Jokinen said. “Having experience like that, its going to help you to get even better. And at the same time, for the younger guys, its an eye-opener, probably, too, how tough this tournament actually is.” Tippett likes that his younger players get an opportunity to play in “real competitive, playoff-style games.” Rielly considers it beneficial to work with three different coaches he didnt know before and thinks that itll help him learn quicker in the future. “You get a chance to kind of learn new breakouts, new power-play things,” the 20-year-old Leafs defenceman said. “I think if youre trying to keep learning like that, thats always helpful. I think Ill be able to carry that back to Toronto with me.” Scheifele and Maurice will be able to carry something back to Winnipeg, as well. The tournament is just another chance for the coach who signed a four-year deal and the Jets franchise forward to get better accustomed to each other after just half a season together. Maurice said hes still learning about Scheifele, but he has a lot to be proud of over the past couple of months. “What I really like is how hes handled the adversity of the injury,” Maurice said. "When something doesnt go his way, he doesnt quit. He digs in and works harder and competes and then I also recognize that this is a learning experience for him. Over the course of his career hes going to have some adversity. “The question is how do you learn to handle it, and hes learned to handle it here with some pretty high-level hockey where he wasnt handed ice time and he fought his way through it and became a real important part of the team here.” According to Jokinen, Scheifele followed the same path in his first full NHL season as he has at the world championships. As a result, he has a chance to be a major contributor for Canada now that every game is an elimination game. “It took him a little bit of time to get used to it,” Jokinen said. “But once he started feeling comfortable, he was really good for us. Hes a highly skilled player, he can be the difference-maker every time when he steps on the ice.” NOTES — Tippett would not reveal which goaltender, Ben Scrivens or James Reimer, would start Thursday against Finland, which has no such dilemma thanks to the presence of a healthy Pekka Rinne. … Defenceman Tyler Myers missed Wednesdays practice because of the flu bug thats going around the team. Tippett expects him to be OK to play in the quarter-finals. ’ ’ ’ |

The Knicks th HOUSTON — Jimmy Nielsen had five saves, while Tally Hall had one stop and Sporting Kansas City and the Houston Dynamo played to a 0-0 tie Wednesday night. The draw extends Houstons unbeaten streak to five games, but the Dynamo (13-10-9, 48 points) were unable to close the gap on Kansas City (15-10-7, 52 points), which remained four points ahead of the Dynamo in second place in the Eastern Conference. Nielsen was tested early by the Dynamo. Will Bruin had a shot from the right box stopped by a sliding Nielsen in the second minute, and Nielsen got a foot on a Bruin shot from outside the right goalkeepers box in the sixth minute. Corey Ashe let loose a shot from 30 yards in the middle of the field in the seventh minute that Nielsen had to jump up and bat over the crossbar. Aurelien Collin kept the game scoreless at the half, clearing a Brad Davis free kick from outside the upper right box off the end line. Off a throw-in, Kansas City had one of its best chances in the 67th minute, but Dominic Dwyers header from the penalty area was saved by Hall. Téma: Jak postupovat / as the Sociedad striker mana MIAMI — Jason Taylors ready to hang it up, while the New York Jets are desperate to keep playing. Taylor plans to retire after Sundays season finale for the Miami Dolphins. Theyll try to send him out with a win against the Jets, who need a victory to keep alive their slim hopes of making the playoffs. Even if the Jets win, to earn a post-season berth theyll also need losses Sunday by Cincinnati, Tennessee and either Denver or Oakland. “This is the first time I have ever been in a situation like this,” said receiver Plaxico Burress, a 10-year veteran. “If we do get in, great. If things dont work out, we have nobody to blame but ourselves.” The Jets (8-7) lost control of their destiny when they were beaten last week by the Giants 29-14. Now the Jets are in danger of missing the playoffs after reaching the AFC championship game each of the past two years, and elimination could come at the hands of the AFC East rival Dolphins (5-10). “It would be beautiful to ruin their playoff dreams,” Miami defensive end Kendall Langford said. “Were playing for pride. Theyre playing for a playoff spot.” The teams meet in a regular-season finale for the first time since 2008, when the Dolphins won to clinch their only division title since 2000. That game eliminated the Jets from playoff contention. This year the Dolphins have been consigned to a spoilers role since Halloween, thanks to their 0-7 start. Taylors retirement announcement this week provided some additional motivation for the last game. The NFLs active sack leader spent 13 of his 15 seasons with Miami, made the Pro Bowl six times and ranks with the greatest players in franchise history. “His presence will be missed, not only in our locker room, but in this organization,” receiver Brandon Marshall said. “Those guys are once-in-a-lifetime guys. We would love for him to go out with a win.” Coincidentally, Taylor played last season for the Jets before rejoining the Dolphins. “He was a great teammate, and we loved having him here,” Jets tight end Dustin Keller said. “But theyre going to want to send him off with a big win, and we cant let that happen. We know what kind of player he is and what hes capable of, and we cant let him disrupt the game.” Taylor has 16 1/2 of his 139 1/2 sacks against the Jets, although he managed none when the teams met in October. New York won 24-6, and while the Dolphins have been a much better team lately, theyll be without 1,000-yard rusher Reggie Bush because of a knee injury. The Dolphins took a 17-point lead at New England last week before losing 27-24, which left them 0-5 in games decided by a field goal or less. The Jets loss to the Giants carried even more sting, because it may wind up costing them a playoff berth. Coach Rex Ryan declared months ago that these Jets are even more talented than the two teams he took to the AFC title game. But New York has given up 74 points while losing the past two games, and the offence was so out of sorts against the Giants that Mark Sanchez was forced to throw a career-high 59 passes. The Jets rank 27th in the NFL in yardage, stirring speculation about offensive co-ordinator Brian Schottenheimers job security. With typical bravado, Ryan insisted the season might yet be salvaged. “We can do some damage if we get into the playoffs,” he said. “I dont think theres any doubt about that, because I think we play excellent defence, I think we can run the football, and I think thats what you have to do this time of year.” But getting to the post-season is now a long shot. Three of the other games that will determine the Jets fate are late starts Sunday, which means that if they win, the Jets will likely be flying home when they learn whether their season is over. “Were just focused on the things we can control, and thats trying to play well against Miami and coming up with a win,” Sanchez said. “After that, well see what happens. Hopefully we get a win and on the plane we find out everything worked out in our favour. But all we can control is winning.” The Dolphins, meanwhile, are bound for another off-season of change. Coach Tony Sparano was fired Dec. 12, and the next coach will be Miamis seventh since the start of 2004. With a losing record for the third consecutive year — the Dolphins first such stretch since the 1960s — a roster shake-up is likely, too. Given his teams situation, the 37-year-old Taylor decided the time was right to call it quits. Hell do it after playing his 204th game for the Dolphins, more than anyone aside from Dan Marino. “Its great to have a chance to walk away in front of your home crowd in a city that means a lot to you against an opponent that youve had a tremendous history against,” Taylor said. “I want to win the game, but not so I can say I won my last game. This is not about Jason Taylor and my career. There are guys in the locker-room that are fighting for jobs, fighting for their futures, auditioning for their next jobs. So Im just a small piece of this team train. Im going to do my part Sunday to help win.” . The 33-year-old right-hander was 14-7 with a career-low 3.64 ERA in 28 starts for his hometown San Diego Padres last season. He joins a rotation that includes NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw, Chad Billingsley, Ted Lilly and fellow newcomer Chris Capuano, who signed a $10-million, two-year deal last week. Pepe, Jese Rodriguez, and Angel Di Maria all scored as Madrid won a bad-tempered crosstown derby 3-0 to humble Atletico on Wednesday, three days after it took the outright league lead, with only its second loss of the season and first in 23 matches. Barcelona did its part to increase the chances of a clasico in the April 19 final by beating 10-man Sociedad 2-0 at the Camp Nou. Pepe spent much of the game riling up Atletico striker Diego Costa after putting Madrid ahead in the 17th minute at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium where his shot deflected off defender Emiliano Insua past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The hosts dominated the tetchy derby as Courtois made a string of first-half saves before Jese Rodriguez broke through in the 57th as the young striker continued his impressive season by using a quick touch to guide Angel Di Marias pass under the Belgium keeper. Diego Costas frustrations got the better of him as a yellow card in the 61st means Atleticos leading scorer will miss the return leg next week, which leaves the attack depleted with David Villa also expected to be sidelined by injury. With Gareth Bale out for the second straight game and Cristiano Ronaldo strangely subdued, Di Maria capped a productive night with a goal from another deflected shot in the 73rd. It came just after Luka Modric cleared Diego Godins header off the goal-line for Atleticos lone scoring opportunity. Madrid has yet to concede in eight domestic cup matches this season. “Everybody was fantastic, we did everything very well,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said after Madrid ttook a page out of Atleticos book and played with his pressure to keep the visitors from getting any time on the ball.dddddddddddd “We showed we can excel in these types of contests.” Atleticos first defeat since October came three days after it took over the league lead outright for the first time since 1996. “We didnt come through and play the kind of game we wanted to. Its unfortunate but there is still the return leg,” Atletico midfielder Koke said. Sociedads intentions were clear as the Basque side sat back and tried to weather Barcelonas pressure and strike on the counter, but goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto kicked Carlos Velas shot as the Sociedad striker managed an attempt with Javier Mascherano dragging him to the ground. “It should have been a penalty, and it would have changed the whole outlook of the game,” Vela said. “When (the referee) gives Barcelona an extra hand, its nearly impossible to beat them.” Sociedad goalie Enaut Zubikarai did well to deny Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi before watching a ball skip through the area onto the foot of Sergio Busquets to bounce inside the post in the 44th. Sociedad was reduced to 10 men after Inigo Martinez was shown his second yellow card for protesting the goal. Barcelona exploited the extra space as Alexis Sanchez was played clear into the area in the 60th but shot off the post, with Gorka Elustondo mystifyingly clearing the loose ball back into the area where it came off Zubikarai into goal. “We should have scored more goals after going a man up,” Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez said. “Both series look similar, although Madrid looks more in control of theirs.” Like Ronaldo, Messi was also muted until Zubikarai saved his leaping volley effort near the close. ’ ’ ’ |
