Téma: Jak postupovat / which included two quad jumps, SUNRISE, FLORIDA – There is a sense that nobody is safe with the Toronto Maple Leafs these days – from management to the coaching staff to the players. An epic collapse – 10 losses in 12 games – in Canadas largest market is not going to simply fade away. “When something is as fresh as this is right now you always think theres going to be a lot of change,” defenceman Cody Franson said on Wednesday, “and sometimes when time goes by a little bit and you sit back and evaluate [with] cooler heads I guess and, you know, there might not be as many changes as you think.” “Weve learned our lesson,” said centre Nazem Kadri, “and you almost want next season to start right now.” Yes, it will be a long off-season in Toronto where the questions about the future are flying fast and furious right now, including in the dressing room. The Leafs pending unrestricted free agents, include: Mason Raymond, Nikolai Kulemin, Paul Ranger, Dave Bolland, Jay McClement and Troy Bodie while four players are headed toward restricted free agency: James Reimer, Jake Gardiner, Carter Ashton and Franson. Meanwhile, management may look to shake things up via the trade route with Kadris name usually front and centre in the chatter. So do the players see big moves on the horizon? “Yeah, I mean, you would think so,” said Gardiner, “but you never know whats going to happen. Management here expects a lot out of us and knows we can succeed, its just, I dont know what it was this year.” REIMER ON THE WAY OUT Reimer certainly seems destined to leave town after watching Jonathan Bernier steal away the No. 1 job this season. It has been reported by TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger that Reimer plans on respectfully asking for a trade once the season ends. Reimer let out a sigh of exasperation before breaking into a huge grin when questioned about that on Wednesday. “Lets wait a couple of days before we talk about that,” he pleaded. “Obviously, its a fair question. Honestly, I know my agents been thinking about things and stuff, but I havent been thinking about it. Ive just been trying to get this team to the playoffs.” The Leafs have two games left on the schedule: Thursday in Florida and Saturday in Ottawa. The players will likely clean out their lockers and have exit interviews on Monday. “Right now, I let my agent worry about those things and I worry about stopping that little black thing,” Reimer quipped showing that while he may have lost the starting gig he hasnt lost his sense of humour. Reimer seems torn. He has so many good memories from his time in Toronto, but he believes he can be a starter and he wants that chance badly. “Just the atmosphere,” Reimer said when asked what hes enjoyed most about life as a Leaf. “Its arguably the best franchise, best organization in the world so to have the opportunity and privilege to play, I mean, to put on that sweater its special, especially our run last year. Just the excitement and the buzz, thats why you play the game and it was a real honour.” That sentiment is echoed throughout the dressing room. THIS IS MY DREAM COME TRUE “Its been great,” said Franson, who was late arriving at training camp due to a contract dispute and now is once again facing some uneasy negotiations. “Toronto was my favourite team growing up. This is my dream come true so Im hopeful that I get to stay and that everything works out, but that is the business. At the end of the day, theyre going to do what they feel is best for the team and hopefully Im in that plan.” “I love it,” said Kadri, a player who craves the spotlight. “I love Toronto. I love our fans and how passionate they are. I love playing at the ACC for our home games. Ive cherished my time here and hopefully it continues.” “Im happy to stay with one team for six years,” said Kulemin, the longest-serving Leaf. ?“I like the team. I like the city, the fans, everything. Well see.” The players seem to still be in a state of shock. On March 13, after an impressive win in Los Angeles, the Leafs appeared a safe bet to make the post-season. The rest, as they say, is history. Another collapse. The third in three years following the 18-wheeler driven off a cliff by Ron Wilson and last Springs Game 7 meltdown in Beantown. Teams that dont learn from mistakes are doomed to repeat them so, yeah, changes seem inevitable. But the players are pleading for patience. PLEADING FOR PATIENCE “We are a young team and this is an experience we can definitely learn from,” said Kadri. “Its definitely leaving a bitter taste in our mouth. Its only going to help us, because this is an experience we never want to go through again.” So why are the Leafs wilting when the season is on the line? Certainly, their slack defensive play seemed to be exposed down the stretch as the games and playoff races got tighter. But what about the theory that the pressure of playing in a hockey-mad market contributed to the demise? Reimer, who was embroiled in a controversy after head coach Randy Carlyle deemed a recent performance as “just OK,” admits the so-called white noise created by the teams bloated media corps does indeed have an impact. “Oh, 100 per cent yeah. Its something that you have to do,” said Reimer, who almost always talks to reporters on game days, which is something many goalies will not do. "Its something you think about, but at the same time what you guys do creates such a hype around the game itself so there might be more pressure, because of it, but I think theres more excitement, because of it as well and playing hockey when there is that excitement, that atmosphere, thats what makes it fun. “Some days its tough, but at the same time the pros outweigh the cons.” For Reimer, the issue with the team this year is the same one that all non-playoff teams deal with whether they play in a Canadian market or sunny ice-averse Florida. “As a guy and as a team you look in the mirror and you just have to accept that we werent good enough,” Reimer reasoned moments after the Leafs were officially eliminated on Tuesday night in Tampa. “A wise man once said that the playoffs dont let you in unless youre good enough. You dont sneak in unless you deserve it.” . Fernandez, coached in Toronto by former two-time Olympic silver medallist Brian Orser, scored 267.11 points and is the first champion to successfully defend since Russias Evgeny Plushenko in 2005 and 2006. Sergei Voronov was second with 252.55 points and Konstantin Menshov had 237.24 in third as neither could challenge the Spaniards lead from the short program. Coming two weeks before the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, the championships offered competitors a chance to assess their preparation. Fernandez, who had an awkward landing after a quad salchow and managed only a double lutz when a triple was planned, said it was essential to eliminate errors to be able to contend for a first Olympic medal. “There are mistakes where you lose points and points and points,” said Fernandez, who skated to Henry Mancinis “Peter Gunn” and “Harlem Nocture,” a jazz standard. “In a competition like the Olympics, every single point matters.” At last years Europeans, Fernandez became the first Spaniard to win a major figure skating title. Plushenko, the Olympic champ in 2006 and a two-time silver medallist, skipped the Europeans but his absence nearly overshadowed the Russian mens trio. One of the biggest figure skating stars of the past 15 years, Plushenko is scheduled to perform a short and a free program behind closed doors for Russian skating officials on Tuesday for a chance to claim the countrys only mens slot at Sochi. Leading up to the Europeans, Voronov and Menshov were mentioned behind Russian champion Maxim Kovtun as contenders ffor the title and the position of Plushenkos main challenger.dddddddddddd But Kovtun finished fifth here and afterward seemed resigned to his fate. “After the third quad attempt, I understood this wasnt going to happen,” Kovtun said. “I dont really know what happened because it was all fine in the warmup and I had a great practice on (Friday).” Voronovs silver was his best result in international competition. Though he won the Russian nationals twice, in 2008 and 2009, his career had stagnated. He refused to speculate about Plushenkos tryout, but made it clear that if he were to be selected by Russia, he was ready for the Olympic challenge. “Of course I want to go, who doesnt want to go to the Olympics?” Voronov said. “Plushenko is an authority in figure skating but we all want to go and there is only one spot. Its not us who decides.” Adding to the intrigue, International Skating Union President Ottavio Cinquanta was showered with questions by reporters in Budapest and had to explain at length the ISUs policy allowing countries to replace injured or ill skaters at the Olympics between the team event and the individual events. The team event makes its Olympic debut on Feb. 6, a day before the opening ceremony. With a solid free skate which included two quad jumps, Menshov managed to climb to third overall after finishing 11th place in the short program. “It seems like I always have to overcome some difficulties,” Menshov said. The risk of a second quadruple jump in the short program, which he failed to complete both here and at the Russian nationals, made him fall so far behind. “Im not confident on it yet,” he said. The Europeans end on Sunday with the pairs free skate. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / t left tackle, his DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Serena Williams says she asked for a wildcard into the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships to combat boredom once she believed her back injury was on the mend. “My back finally started to feel better but it wasnt better in time for me to play Doha at the level Id like to play,” said Williams, in a pre-match media interview on Monday. "So then it became more about what can I play next and this was next on the calendar. “It gets boring to have to practice every day. I was like, I dont want to practice anymore. I want to play a match.” The American has been sidelined with an aching back since losing a three-set, fourth-round match to Ana Ivanovic at the Australian Open last month. The top-seeded Williams isnt just playing singles this week in Dubai. She and sister Venus, who also was given a singles wildcard into the main draw, were granted a wildcard into the doubles as well. “I think its actually going to be good for me to do (play singles and doubles) because it will give me some more match play,” Williams said. “I need to get used to the conditions and moving so its definitely helpful.” Williams, who received a first round bye, will play the winner of the all-Russian encounter between Alisa Kleybanova and Elena Makarova in the second round. Téma: Jak postupovat / f wed been able ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – Blair Jones scored the eventual winner in the third period as the Abbotsford Heat defeated the Oklahoma City Oil Barons 3-2 in American Hockey League action on Friday. Jones goal at 7:32 of the third gave the Heat a two-goal lead. The Barons scored late, but the Heat (40-25-7) hung on for the win. Brett Olson and Derek Smith scored on the Heats first two shots of the game. Matthew Ford and Taylor Fedun scored for the Barons (33-28-11), who slipped to eighth-place with the loss. Richard Bachman made 16 saves. Joni Ortio stopped 35 shots, including a toe save in close off Ford, the Barons leading goal scorer, with seconds to play. Abbotsford has won six of its past eight games, improving its chances of catching Chicago for fourth in the Western Conference. Olson opened the scoring just 90 seconds into the game after Corey Locke skated around a defender at the blue-line and fed him the puck down low. Olson took the pass off his skate and backhanded the puck over a sprawling Bachman for his 16th of the season. Brett Kulak picked up the second assist on the play for his first career AHL point. Smith made it 2-0 at 5:34, blasting a slap shot from just across the blue-line between the legs of Bachman. The Barons pushed to get on the board but were denied. Ortio robbed Juhjar Khaira in close on a rebound attempt. Then the Finnish netminder made a pad stop off Darnell Nurse on a backdoor play. Shots were 12-3 for the visiting Barons at the 14-minute mark of the period. The Barons finally solved Ortio at 5:37 of the second period on the power play as Ford deflected C.J. Stretchs wrist shot in midair, for his team-high 24th goal. Oklahoma City thought they tied it at 11:06, but the goal was immediately waved off because Andrew Miller kicked the puck in. Moments later Roman Horak was sent in on a breakaway by Miller, but the former Heat forward was stonewalled by Ortio. Jones restored the two-goal cushion for Abbotsford, taking a drop pass from Ben Street and ripping a shot blocker side for his 16th of the season. The Barons got back within one with just over two minutes to go as Feduns point shot redirected off of a Heat defenders skate past Ortio. The two teams face off again Sunday afternoon in Abbotsford. ORLANDO, Fla. — The New Jersey Nets are one of three teams the Magic gave superstar Dwight Howard permission to talk to about potential trades earlier this month. Its safe to say the Nets wish they had the Orlando centre on their side Thursday night. Howard scored 16 points, grabbed 24 rebounds and blocked three shots and the Magic defeated the Nets 94-78 in front of a sellout crowd of 18,954. Ryan Anderson led the Magic with 22 points, while Jason Richardson added 16 points and JJ Redick had 15. “I like the way were heading right now,” Howard said after notching his 49th career 20-rebound game. “Were doing all the right things on defence — were making mistakes here and there, but well get it right — and our effort has been great.” It was a dominant performance from Howard — who neared his career high of 26 rebounds and helped hold the Nets to 44.8 per cent from inside the paint — in a game against the team hes been heavily linked to in trade rumours since the NBA lockout ended. The two teams reportedly were close to a three-team deal that wouldve sent Howard to New Jersey a couple weeks ago, but Orlando backed out while holding out hope that Howard might stick around long term. And with trade talks stalled, New Jersey has manoeuvred its payroll to make room for Howard, along with current star Deron Williams, next summer. But Orlando players say the off-court drama wasnt on their minds. “He did a great job approaching it just like any other game, and everyone on the team did the same thing,” said Magic guard Jason Richardson, who scored 15 of his 16 points in the first half. “We didnt really worry about whats going on with him.” Howard is intent on taking care of business. “My focus is on what the Magic have to do to get better,” he said. Rookie forward MarShon Brooks finished with 17 points off the bench for New Jersey, helping make up for the struggles of Williams, who scored just 10 points on 2-of-12 shooting. “It is definitely frustrating,” ssaid Williams, who shot 3 for 11 in the Nets loss to Atlanta on Tuesday.dddddddddddd “I am not playing well right now and the team is not playing too well right now. It is not time to panic. We are going to have a little bit of struggles just because everybody is learning.” The Magic jumped out to a 20-point lead early in the second quarter, but 14-3 run just before halftime — including eight points from Brooks — cut the Magics lead to six points heading into the break. But Orlandos suffocating defence prevented the Nets, who scored only 34 points in the second half, from making a serious run. New Jersey cut Orlandos lead to seven points in the fourth quarter, but a balanced Magic scoring attack led by Hedo Turkoglu put the win away. Turkoglu finished with 11 points, seven assists and six boards. “In the second half we came back with a good frame of mind and didnt go on a big run, but we were pretty consistent throughout the entire second half,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. “If wed been able to make free throws then we could have really opened it up.” Notes: Jameer Nelson left the game with a neck spasm early in the third quarter and didnt return. The team will evaluate him in the morning and determine if he can play Friday night at Charlotte. . In an effort to get off to better starts, the Nets adjusted their starting lineup by inserting Sundiata Gaines and Mehmet Okur in place of Anthony Morrow and Johan Petro. It didnt help; The Magic jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter. “Were still in the experimental stages,” coach Avery Johnson said. . Williams, who can opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent this summer, declined to comment when asked if he would consider joining the Magic in free agency. . Howard and Williams had dinner together on Thursday night. . The Nets were without Brook Lopez, who is expected to miss several weeks with a broken foot. … It was referee Dick Bavettas 2,500th consecutive game. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / o times." The Leafs could not t TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger have the latest on why the New York Rangers may trade Ryan Callahan, Thomas Vaneks future after the winger rejected a long-term extension from the New York Islanders, and if the Raphael Diaz trade means another Vancouver Canucks defenceman is on the way out. Ryan Callahan trade talks caught a lot of people off guard. Details are now emerging about why the Rangers would consider such a move. Darren Dreger: He wants a lot of money. Its been widely reported that Callahan is looking for a seven-year term around $6 million per year. That is not accurate. Im told that it is more than $6.5 million but less than $7 million per year on a seven-year term. Whether its $6 million per year or, as we know now, closer to $7 million, thats a lot of money; too much for the Rangers. Theres not a lot of wiggle room in this negotiation and thats why Glen Sather is considering and working towards moving his captain. It seems like a pressing issue. What are the chances Callahan gets either signed or traded before this Fridays Olympic roster freeze? Dreger: 50/50. I know thats an easy guess to make but I would say its more unlikely to get done because there is a willingness to push this as far as you can. But in the meantime the Rangers also need to get as much in return as possible for Callahan. The Chris Stewart deal with the St. Louis Blues is still there; Stewart would be a part of that. The Rangers also have to pay attention to whats going on with Dan Girardi. If he doesnt come to terms this week with the Rangers and avoid potential of unrestricted free agency, perhaps that sends a message to Sather that hes going to unrestricted free agency and he then joins Callahan in the trade speculation. Sounds more and more like New York Islanders forward Thomas Vanek wants to be an unrestricted free agent this summer. What does that mean for potential deals? Bob McKenzie: Youre right. News broke on Monday morning that Vanek rejected a verbal offer from the Islanders; a lucrative, long-term deal. The implication of course being that now hes going to get unrestricted free agency. He wants to at least test the market and see whats out there. So the Islanders are looking at trade scenarios for Vanek between now and the March 5 trade deadline. GM Garth Snow will continue to try and sign Vanek; try and sweeten the pot and push to get something done, but by the same token, hes on a track where hes talking to teams and finding out what hes going to get. The Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins are amongst those teams that would be interested in getting a scoring winger, a rental at the deadline. Pittsburgh has some cap issues, but Vaneks exactly what the doctors ordered for a lot of contending teams. Vancouver gets another defenceman in the Raphael Diaz for Dale Weise trade but isnt that an overabundance? Does this lead us to believe the Canucks will deal a defenceman at some point? McKenzie: Everybody assumes that this is the precursor to moving one of their veteran defencemen; getting Alex Edler to waive his no-trade clause or what have you. I dont believe theres any relation to the Diaz trade and making another move. Right now you have Kevin Bieksa, Chris Tanev, and Yannick Weber all battling injury. In my opinion, getting Diaz is nothing more than taking a fourth-line grinder with limited ability in Weise, and sending him to the Canadiens for a puck-moving defenceman who had fallen out of favour. I think this is about the here and now. Thats not to say the Canucks wont make a trade down the road, but I think this move is self-explanatory. David Legwand is a lifelong Nashville Predator with 951 career games, might he move? McKenzie: The Predators are shopping Legwand hard. The price is expected to be a first- or second-round pick but keep in mind he has a full no-move clause and he will decide whether or not he wants to be a rental or whether he wants to play out the string with Nashville. Speaking to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on Friday, Brodeur said "Ive come to the conclusion that Im definitely going to be available July 1.TORONTO – This was the Toronto Maple Leafs in a nutshell. With everything on the line, with any hope of the postseason hanging on by a rapidly dwindling thread did they deliver the baffling Mr. Hyde performance – a 4-2 loss to the recently eliminated Jets – that will soon seal another season of disappointment and collapse. One team on this night – the final home game of the regular season in Toronto – looked like it was fighting to get into the playoffs and it wasnt the Leafs. They were instead the lacklustre group that was pushed around, outworked, bodied off pucks, standing still, lost defensively, and lacking the urgency or emotion expected of a team fighting to stay alive for one more day. It was perhaps the predictable performance of an unpredictable and often bewildering hockey club, one who will (very) soon miss the playoffs for the eighth time in nine seasons and thus complete another shattering late season unraveling. “We seem to find ways to always wonder what the heck is going on,” said a befuddled Randy Carlyle afterward. “Thats the frustrating part for us is that when we are able to execute and our work ethic is strong were a hockey club that can give teams difficulty and play to a high level, but our consistency level, it goes from game to game and sometimes period to period.” The unraveling on this night began in earnest with less than four seconds left in the first frame. It was then, with the Leafs up 2-1, that Jacob Trouba knotted the score, ending a shift which included the usual assortment of failed execution and intensity. James van Riemsdyk, who failed initially to chip the puck out along the sideboards, was beaten to a rebound by the Jets blossoming young defender. Noticeably hungrier and more determined, Winnipeg wore out the home side for extended and repeated shifts in the two periods that followed. Toronto went seven minutes and 24 seconds at one point without even a shot on goal. Carlyle described his team as “flat”, missing energy, chasing the game constantly. “They won more one-on-one battles than we did thats for sure,” he said, a damning fact in a game of such importance. And while the head coach will surely and deservedly absorb his share of blame for a failed season, the stunning lack of fight in Game 79 cannot be thrust on his shoulders. Dave Bolland, known for a winning pedigree, wouldnt sugarcoat what was plainly apparent, that a team fighting for its playoff life was simply outworked. “When they were getting that puck in deep they were hungry,” he said dejectedly of the Jets attack. Tobias Enstrom would reward those efforts, capping a power-play with the eventual game-winner. It was the deserved fate of the home team on this night, a group that was booed off the ice by an increasingly sour fan-base. “I think they outplayed us,” said Phil Kessel. “We need to play better.” He and the Leafs have very likely run out of time, however, their chances of returning to the postseason for a second straight spring all but torpedoed with the loss. Toronto has just three games left and would somehow have to jump over the Devils and Blue Jackets (and maybe even the Capitals) for the final wild card position in the East, highly unlikely given that both have games in hand and the requisite tiebreakers. Any momentum seemingly built up in back-to-back wins over Calgary and Boston slipped away in a hurry. “I know in our heads we wanted it,” said a down-looking James Reimer, “[but] maybe it didnt show out there.” Earlier in the day, Carlyle and his players spoke of controlling what they could control and then letting the chips fall where they may. “We dont want to get caught up too much in what other teams are doing,” he said. “We want to make sure that our focus is totally 110 per cent on what were doing and what we have to do to give ourselves a chance.” But there was none of that here to see, just more of the bizarre same from a flawed and highly unpredictable hockey team. Five Points 1. Outworked? It seemed a plainly evident notion, but Dion Phaneuf disagreed with the assertion. “I dont think we were outworked,” he said, contradicting what seemed the obvious consensus, even for those in the Toronto dressing room. “We were working hard, but sometimes we made some mistakes that were costly mistakes.” Tyler Bozak conceded that the Leafs were outworked in certain segments of the game, including a one-sided second frame which saw his team outshot 14-7. “We shoulldve been [outworking them] the whole game seeing as the situation were in,” Bozak said.dddddddddddd"They were playing with nothing to lose and at ease and not afraid to make mistakes or anything like that." Winnipeg managed 41 shots for the game, nearly doubling the output of the Leafs (25). 2. Individuals vs. Team It was an extra pass by Kessel that landed in the hands of the opponent and eventually became the Jets first goal – one that Bryan Little scored. Such mistakes of added finesse have come to define some of the Leafs struggle. “Its one of those where the individual thinks that maybe hes going to make the difference and we play as individuals, not as a team,” Carlyle said, though not referring specifically to the goal. The Leafs head coach, whose job security hangs delicately in the balance, has always preferred a meat and potatoes brand of hockey, but has more often been treated (frustrated?) to sometimes unnecessary displays of skill. He gushed over the simplicity some of the leagues top teams seem to display. “They keep it very simple,” he said. “They dont complicate the game. And at times we seem to want to complicate it.” 3. Home Ice The Leafs concluded their home schedule with 24 wins, the most of any Toronto team since the 2005-06 season (26). Improvement at the ACC was a priority of Carlyle and the coaching staff prior to the season. “In order for you to be a team thats going to qualify for the playoffs and build an organization your home rink has to be one place thats difficult for opposition to come in and steal points,” Carlyle said. “Our mandate is to make it as difficult as possible.” Maybe the starkest contrast between home and away for the Leafs all year has been their offence, considerably more pronounced in Toronto. They averaged more than three goals per game at home versus 2.53 on the road with three games still to play. A big part of that has been the leagues no. 1 ranked home power-play, which finished 1-4 against the Jets on Saturday. 4. Career-Highs Setting up Kessel for the games first goal, Bozak matched career-highs with his 29th assist and 47th point of the season. He met those marks in 18 fewer games than when he initially established them in the 2011-12 season. The 26-year-old Kessel meanwhile matched a career-high himself, scoring his 37th goal of the year while also hitting the 80-point plateau for the second time in his career. He sits just off the 82 points totaled in the 11-12 campaign. Having already set career-highs in all three main offensive categories (goals, assists, points), Nazem Kadri hit 20 goals for the first time in his career, scoring the Leafs second goal against the Jets. 5. Out of Town Scoreboard On the edge of his seat Friday night watching the Blue Jackets play the Blackhawks, Kadri cheered loudly when Ben Smith scored with four seconds left in regulation to lift Chicago to a 4-3 win. Columbuss last-second defeat kept them just a single point in front of Toronto for the final wild card spot in the East – they hold the tiebreaker. “Were following it pretty closely, at least I am,” said Kadri of the out-of-town scoreboard before Saturdays game. “That was a pretty spectacular finish. I did fist-pump one or two times.” The Leafs could not take advantage, however, of the door which cracked open ever so slightly in the Columbus loss. The Blue Jackets, with 85 points and six games to play, occupy the final wild card spot in the East. Stats-Pack 24-16-1 – Leafs record at the ACC this season. 20 – Goals for Nazem Kadri this season, the first time hes hit that mark in the NHL. 23 – Consecutive games without a power-play point for James van Riemsdyk. 0 – Victories in a start for James Reimer since Jan. 21. 10-4-2 – Leafs record vs. Canadian teams this season. 47 – Points this season for Tyler Bozak, matching a career-high. 7:24 – Time between shots for the Leafs in the second period. 37 – Goals this season for Phil Kessel, matching a career-high. 600 – Games played in the career of Joffrey Lupul. Lupul exited Saturdays game after the second period, re-aggravating a lower-body injury. Special Teams Capsule PP: 1-4Season: 20.6% (5th) PK: 1-2Season: 78.5% (28th) Quote of the Night “I know in our heads we wanted it, maybe it didnt show out there.” -James Reimer, following the loss to Winnipeg. Up Next The Leafs conclude the regular season with a three-game road trip, beginning Tuesday night in Tampa. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ngle and scored on Robins The top six teams remain in the same order in this weeks version of the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings as the cream has risen to the top. Philadelphia continues to reign, as Cliff Lee has been dominant in the second half of the season, going 6-0 with a 0.37 ERA since the beginning of August. The Yankees sit in second spot, bolstering their lineup with the long-awaited promotion of designated hitter (and alleged catcher) Jesus Montero. There were three teams that moved up significantly. Arizona has gone 12-2 in the last 14 games and climbed up from 13th to seventh. A couple of teams playing out the string have been playing better lately and climbing the rankings as a result. The Dodgers are 12-3 in the last 15 games, good enough to move from 19th to 14th, while the New York Mets have managed a 9-3 record in their last dozen games to move up from 24th to 18th. Toronto continues to hang around, just outside the Top 10, sitting at 13th this week. With the game tied at 1, the bases loaded, two outs and a full count, Saunders hit a chopper to first and narrowly outraced pitcher Tony Sipp, who was covering the bag. The batters were running on the pitch, allowing two runs to score. The play was upheld after a brief replay review. Jose Altuve homered on the games first pitch for the Astros, who have lost three in a row. Dominic Leone (1-0) pitched 1 2-3 innings for his first major league win in 16 appearances, and Fernando Rodney pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save. Houston starter Jarred Cosart (3-4) had kept Seattles offence largely bottled up until the seventh inning. Dustin Ackley and Stefen Romero led off with singles and Cosart walked Nick Franklin to load the bases with no outs. Cosart struck out Mike Zunino before giving way to Sipp, who got pinch hitter Cole Gillespie to pop up before Saunders hit. Cosart gave up three runs on five hits and four walks over 6 1-3 innings. Téma: Jak postupovat / n Red Sox signed i PHILADELPHIA — Strong defence makes St. Johns a tough opponent, even if the Red Storm dont get a win to show for it. Darrun Hilliard scored 18 points, Ryan Arcidiacono had 12 and No. 9 Villanova beat St. Johns 57-54 on Saturday. It was the second straight win for Villanova (24-3, 12-2 Big East) since its second loss of the season to No. 11 Creighton. “That was old-school, Big East basketball,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “Ugly. Great defence. Physical. You had to be physically and mentally tough to play that game. It was the Big East. Im glad to see our conference at that level. It was just the kind of game in the 80s when I was an assistant here.” DAngelo Harrison had 15 points for St. Johns (18-10, 8-7), Rysheed Jordan scored 13 and JaKarr Sampson had 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Red Storms six-game winning streak ended. “It was a Big East battle right to the end,” Red Storm coach Steve Lavin said. “We punched and counter-punched right until the end in a hostile environment.” Though moral victories dont show up in the standings, games like this increase St. Johns NCAA tournament chances. “If you know basketball, our team is coming together,” Lavin said. “Now its up to us how we play the last two weeks.” Wright thinks the Red Storm should get an invitation to the field of 68. “I think we can get five teams in on a year when our conference is down,” Wright said. “Rivalries are getting interesting. Im getting excited about this league.” Arcidiacono banked a three-pointer from the top of the circle to give Villanova a 53-50 lead with 3:43 left. After the Red Storm missed a shot, JayVaughn Pinkston grabbed two key offensive rebounds for the Wildcats and Hilliard made a free throw. St. Johns went 3:36 without a point before Sampsons free throw with 1:14 remaining. Arcidiacono then threw away the inbound pass following a timeout, and Harrison made a driving layup to cut it to 54-53. Daniel Ochefu made one of two free throws to give Villanova a two-point lead with 34 seconds left. With a chance to tie or give the Red Storm a lead, Phil Greene IV was called for travelling with 14 seconds to go. Arcidiaconos free throw made it 56-53. But the Red Storm couldnt get a three-point shot off and Harrison was fouled going for a layup with 1.5 seconds left. He made the first free throw and purposely missed the second, but a lane violation gave the ball to Villanova. “We were trying to get a three, but just couldnt do it,” Harrison said. Josh Hart made one free throw and the Red Storm missed a desperation three-point shot at the buzzer. “Its frustrating,” Sampson said. “We knew it was a big game. We just have to look forward to the next one.” St. Johns came in allowing the second-fewest points in the nation (68.0). They also had the top field goal percentage defence and three-point percentage defence. It showed as the Red Storm forced 15 turnovers and held the Wildcats 23 points below their average (80.7). The Wildcats tied for the fewest points they have scored in a win this season. James Bell hit a three-pointer to give Villanova its biggest lead, 44-38, in the second half. But the Red Storm answered with a 9-3 run capped by SirDominic Pointers driving layup that tied it at 47. After both teams traded misses and turnovers for two minutes, Bell drained another three for a 50-47 with 5:52 left. Villanova, which beat St. Johns 74-67 at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 11, jumped to an 8-0 lead behind two threes by Hilliard. The Red Storm scored the next nine points and the teams played a tight, defensive first half that ended with Villanova leading 28-27. For the Los Angeles Clippers, its about half-court offence and defence to be successful these days. Especially being so short-handed. Blake Griffin scored 26 points, Chris Paul added 25 points and 13 assists, and the depleted Clippers defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 94-83 Monday night. DeAndre Jordan had 11 points and a season-high 21 rebounds, and Jared Dudley scored 10 points for the Clippers, who won their second straight. The Clippers are 2-1 on a season-high tying seven-game road trip. “Weve just got to keep grinding and cant worry about anything,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. Los Angeles played without guards J.J. Redick (injuries to right hand and wrist), Reggie Bullock (sprained left ankle) and Maalik Wayns (left knee). Forward Matt Barnes is out with a torn retina in his left eye. Help may be on the way for the Clippers, who are close to signing free agent forward Stephen Jackson. “Aint nobody going to feel sorry for us,” Paul said. “Weve got to go out there and compete.” The Sixers were not at full strength, either, missing rookie point guard Michael Carter-Williams for the third consecutive game. Carter-Williams was released from Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday after a three-night stay because of a skin infection that caused soreness in his right knee. Evan Turner scored 25 points and Thaddeus Young added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Sixers, who struggled once again without their floor leader. The Sixers are 1-6 without Carter-Williams this season. “The challenge, at times, keeps you up real late at night,” Sixers coach Brett Brown said. Tony Wroten had nine points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in place of Carter-WWilliams.dddddddddddd. The Sixers missed their first 13 3-pointers and trailed 44-36 at halftime, their lowest output in any half this season. “Weve been emphasizing defence so much,” said Sixers centre Spencer Hawes, who was limited to a season-low two points. “Weve been playing a lot better in the last couple games there. Sometimes, it comes at the expense of some things on offence.” The Clippers came out of the locker room and quickly extended their advantage to 57-36 following a 13-0 run. Paul keyed the third-quarter surge with 12 points and five assists as Los Angeles went ahead 76-60. The Sixers made a late push and got within 83-76 with 5:24 remaining. But the Clippers made enough plays down the stretch to pull away. Paul knocked down a huge 3-pointer for an 88-77 lead with 3:10 left and it was enough of a cushion to seal the win. “Were still a work in progress,” Paul said. “Weve just got to keep working.” Rivers addressed Jacksons situation before the game. “Its not done yet,” the coach said. “Nothings done in our league until its done, as you know. I just think hes a veteran. We need him in a pinch, and we need him, like, now. Thats a guy you can bring in, and hopefully he can give you something right away.” Jackson has been out of the league since being released by the San Antonio Spurs before the playoffs last season. NOTES: Youngs name has been reportedly mentioned in trade talks. “I think it would be very hard (to leave), seeing as this has been the only place Ive been in my career,” Young said. . The Clippers, who are 6-6 on the road, dont return home until Dec. 16 against the Spurs. . Téma: Jak postupovat / and Stuckey and shot ST. LOUIS — Jordan Zimmermann needed just 76 pitches to throw his second straight complete game for the Washington Nationals. He made one big mistake, and Matt Adams drove it over the wall in centre to lead Lance Lynn and the St. Louis Cardinals to a 1-0 victory Friday night. It was “a changeup that was down the middle,” Zimmermann said. “He made me pay. Its tough, but tomorrows another day.” Lynn threw eight innings of two-hit ball and Adams homered on his first swing since coming off the disabled list. Zimmermann (5-3) threw a two-hit shutout at San Diego his last start and worked 19 2-3 consecutive scoreless innings before Adams hit his fourth homer on a 1-0 pitch with two outs in the second. He gave up three hits, two of them by Adams, in eight innings against St. Louis for his seventh career complete game and third in a loss. Zimmermanns 76 pitches were the franchises lowest total in a complete game since it relocated to Washington in 2005. The Nationals turned two double plays. “I was throwing a lot of strikes and they were coming up hacking,” Zimmermann said. “I was locating the fastball, got a lot of groundballs and had good defence behind me.” Just no offence. “He was on and we were off,” cleanup man Adam LaRoche said after going 0 for 3. “The majority of the time when Ive seen Jordan, hes really had it.” Adams was activated from the 15-day disabled list from a strained left calf earlier Friday and rookie Oscar Taveras was optioned to Triple-A Memphis. Lynn (7-4) struck out eight with no walks against the NL East leaders, who had won 10 of 13. Trevor Rosenthal added three more strikeouts in the ninth, working around rookie second baseman Kolten Wongs two-out error on Denard Spans routine grounder for his 18th save in 21 chances. Zimmermann is 0-5 against the Cardinals and 0-2 against the Pirates, the only two NL teams he hasnt beaten. The Cardinals have won 10 of the last 12 regular-season meetings, and beat the Nationals in the 2012 NL division series. Lynn retired his first 16 batters. He got some help from his defence when shortstop Jhonny Peralta went into the hole to snare Jayson Werths one-hop liner in the fourth and threw to first to end the inning. Jose Lobaton singled with one out in the sixth for Washingtons first baserunner and took an extra base when left fielder Matt Holliday bobbled the ball. But Zimmermann popped out and Span flied out to centre to end the inning. “Needless to say, he had pretty good stuff,” LaRoche said. “Both guys did.” Werth singled with one out in the seventh but was erased on LaRoches double-play ball. Lynn is 22-9 at home for his career, and shut out the Yankees in his first career complete game on May 27. He surrendered six runs in a total of 8 1-3 innings in a pair of losses in his next two starts at Toronto and against the Giants. The game was played in a snappy 2 hours, 3 minutes, fastest of the season at Busch Stadium. “Just a pretty quick, lifeless game offensively,” LaRoche said. “Its amazing how quick that game was.” NOTES: A pair of 2009 first-round draft picks are matched on Saturday with Stephen Strasburg (6-4, 2.99 ERA) opposing Shelby Miller (7-5, 3.59 ERA). Miller is 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA against Washington. … All four of Adams homers have come at home. … LaRoche made two nice defensive plays at first, scooping up the relay on Peraltas double-play ball in the fifth and then snaring Matt Carpenters smash in the sixth. … Zimmermann had won seven straight decisions in June before Friday, dating to 2012. Andre Drummond had 19 points and 14 rebounds, and Detroit shot a season-best 55 per cent to blow by the Jazz 114-94 Monday night. It was the Pistons first victory in Utah since Richard Hamilton had 28 points in an 80-78 squeaker on Nov. 6, 2002, that was aided by an ill Malone taking the night off. When guard Rodney Stuckey found out, he couldnt believe it. “Wow. Well this is very rare, absolutely, but we really played as a team,” said Stuckey, who had 19 points. Brandon Jennings, who scored 15, said he was probably 12 or 13 years old the last time the Pistons won in Utah — and this one reminded him of being a kid on the playground. “Tonight felt like a pickup game. We were getting things that were so easy,” Jennings said. Drummond shot 9 for 10 from the field and Greg Monroe added 18 points and 11 rebounds to help the Pistons snap a 14-game road losing streak in the finale of a four-game Western Conference trip. “We were both aggressive. We moved around trying to get second shots … and we did a good job being patient,” Monroe said. Gordon Hayward scored 32 points — his highest total since he had 37 against Oklahoma City on Jan. 7 — to lead the Jazz, who have lost seven of eight. Hayward converted a three-point play to slice the lead to 88-76 with 10:03 to play, but the Jazz couldnt get any closer. Each time they made a run, the Pistons responded with a 3-pointer or a basket near the rim. “Its too difficult when you let teams get going like this. They feel good about all the shots they get,” Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. Detroit went 9 for 17 from 3-point range and ended a five-game losing streak. Just as they did when their comeback fell just short against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, the Pistons used crisp ball movement to find open shots. They topped their previous mark for accuracy (54 per cent) set against Atlanta on Feb. 21. “We just took what their defence gave us. We were able to move the ball around, we were making shots and we made everybody look good tonight,” Jenniings said.dddddddddddd Monroe scored on a pass from Kyle Singler to stake the Pistons to their largest lead at 71-46 in the third quarter. The Pistons still have an outside shot at the playoffs, but they need more efforts like this one. Detroit outrebounded Utah 53-33 and hounded the Jazz into 7-of-27 shooting from beyond the arc. The Pistons gained a game on the Hawks, who lost to Phoenix on Monday, but still trail them by 5 1/2 games for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth with 12 games remaining. The Jazz missed the offensive creativity of Alec Burks, the teams second-leading scorer. He sat out his second straight game with a sprained left ankle. Utahs roster doesnt feature many players who can create their own shot, and once the Pistons interrupted the Jazz sets, they were forced into several off-balance jumpers to beat the shot clock. In the first half, the Pistons didnt miss many attempts, shooting at a 61 per cent clip. When they did happen to misfire, they were often there to get the rebound and put the ball back in. Of their 16 misses, the Pistons retrieved nine of them on their way to a 60-40 halftime lead. The Pistons avenged a 110-89 loss at home Jan. 17 when Trey Burke led Utah with 20 points and 12 assists. This time around, the former Michigan star was outplayed by both Jennings and Stuckey and shot just 6 of 15 for 15 points with two assists. “Its tough, but weve just got to continue to learn,” Burke said. “They had more energy than us early on and when we did try and make a push, it was kind of too late.” The Jazz, who have shown effort throughout this trying season, looked spent and splintered against Detroit. Players and coaches were yelling at each other, no one was sprinting to the timeout huddles, and hustle plays were few and far between. The Jazz, who never led, own the worst record in the Western Conference. NOTES: The Jazz were only able to convert Detroits 13 turnovers into six points. Utah had a season-low seven turnovers, but they led to 14 Detroit points. … The Pistons outscored the Jazz 34-17 in the second, their most dominant quarter of the season. … Drummond entered the game ranked second in the NBA in field goal percentage. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / zerheide, Switzerland, NEW YORK — Rather than ban home plate collisions outright, Major League Baseball and its players adopted a rule limiting them this season. In what both sides said was a one-year experiment, the rule allows collisions if the catcher has the ball and is blocking the runners direct path to home plate, and if the catcher goes into the basepath to field a throw to the plate. “Its not a radical departure from what it had been,” Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon said. The new rule, 7.13, states “a runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate).” A runner violating the rule shall be declared out, even if the fielder drops the ball. “Its good, I think it takes away the malicious intent behind the play at the plate,” Texas Rangers catcher J.P. Arencibia said. “Obviously the runner doesnt always have to slide, and the catcher still has the ability to block the plate once he has the ball in hand.” Along with the rule, the sides agreed to a pair of comments umpires use for interpretation. The first comment says “the failure by the runner to make an effort to touch the plate, the runners lowering of the shoulder, or the runners pushing through with his hands, elbows or arms, would support a determination that the runner deviated from the pathway in order to initiate contact with the catcher in violation.” The comment says players who slide appropriately are not in violation of the rule. The second comment says that “unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score.” The runner shall be declared safe if the catcher violates that provision. In addition, it is not a violation “if the catcher blocks the pathway of the runner in order to field a throw, and the umpire determines that the catcher could not have fielded the ball without blocking the pathway of the runner and that contact with the runner was unavoidable.” “There are some things that often times can make the water a little muddy,” union head Tony Clark said after meeting with the New York Yankees. “Over the course of the off-season, the concern was protecting players, but trying to draw up something that not only made sense on paper, but also was going to make sense to the players that were playing on the field.” The umpire crew chief can use the new video-review system to determine whether the rule was violated. “It stops guys just going out of their way just to try to dislodge the baseball when they (catchers) have the plate,” Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington said. Debate over plate collisions has intensified since May 2011, when San Franciscos Buster Posey was injured as the Marlins Scott Cousins crashed into him at the plate. Posey, an All-Star catcher, sustained a broken bone in his lower left leg and three torn ligaments in his ankle, an injury that ended his season. In Game 5 of last years AL championship series, Detroit backstop Alex Avila was pulled a couple of innings after being run over at the plate by Bostons David Ross, a fellow catcher. “I think its fair. A runners path is to home plate,” Oakland catcher Derek Norris said. “Any deviation and hes not trying to score, hes trying to harm. A runner going out of the basepath trying to break up a double play is declared out. This is the same concept as a double-play slide.” . COURCHEVEL, France — Marlies Schild joked that her younger sister would not have got any Christmas presents if she had stopped her from equalling Vreni Schneiders record for World Cup slalom wins on Tuesday. Marlies overcame her younger sister Bernadettes leading time from the first run to win her 34th slalom. The 2011 slalom world champion was third after the first run in the morning. But the elder Schild posted a second run of 53.26 seconds to clinch victory ahead of Frida Hansdotter of Sweden. Bernadette Schild was third overall, and Kathrin Zettel of Austria fourth. After Hansdotter could not match her time, it was down to Bernadette Schild — nine years younger at 23 and seeking her first win — to stop her sibling equalling the record. “She wouldnt have got any Christmas presents,” Marlies Schild said after winning her third straight race at Courchevel, but her first since winning a slalom race at Soldeu-Grandvalira in Andorra in February 2012. “Its a very big (weight) falling off my body and my heart. Its nearly two years ago since my last victory. Everyone was asking and asking what the problem was. I wasnt feeling very good for a long time now.” Canadas Marie-Michele Gagnon finished sixth to continue her hot start to the Olympic season. The 24-year-old from Lac-Etchemin, Que., cemented her reputation as a multi-discipline medal contender for the 2014 Sochi Olympics on a challenging course. “Im showing consistency. Im excited,” said Gagnon, who also competes in giant slalom, super-G, super combined and sometimes downhill. "I really feel like Im in a magical moment right now. “It was not an easy one today, thats for sure. Especially with not training slalom for a long time, I just wanted to make it down so for sure Im happy.” Gagnon was fifth in the slalom and 10th in the giant slalom in the opening World Cup, then added a sixth and a 10th-place finish in super-G races earlier this month. She looked poised for her first World Cup podium in giant slalom last weekend before she went out four gates from the finish. Brittany Phelan, of Mont-Tremblant, Que., was 27th on Tuesday while Elli Terwiel of Sun Peaks, B.C., didnt qualify for the second run. Erin Mielzynski of Collingwood, Ont., and Mikaela Tommy, of Wakefield, Que., were among 25 racers who didnt finish their first runs. Matching Schneiders record from 1986-95 was an extra bonus for Schild. “Lindsey (Vonn) was always saying If you make records, its the only thing you remember. I dont think thats the main thing,” Marlies said. “Its just that (it means) you are a good skier when you break records. Im glad that its over now.” Last season, she stopped racing in March to recover from another knee injury, but the hunger to keep going fuelled her recovery. “I lost some years because of injuries and always had the feeling that I could do moore, and thats the reason Im still here,” she said.dddddddddddd “I had back problems and knee surgery. I didnt know if I could do it again. I was thinking a lot, I was thinking too much. But now Ive got my self-confidence back.” World champion Mikaela Shiffrin, who was seventh after the first run, finished 12th. She won the seasons opening slalom at Levi, Finland, last month, but it has been a miserable few days for the 18-year-old. After failing to finish Sundays giant slalom in St. Moritz, this was her lowest finish since placing 13th in GS at Maribor, Slovenia, in January, and her lowest slalom finish since 15th in Schladming, Austria, in March 2012. “I think I needed that today. I cant win everything. I dont think its good to win everything (because) then I just become complacent,” she said. “So I need to know that Marlies is back. Thats the coolest thing for me because its nice to know Im not the Snow Queen.” She expects fierce competition from Marlies over the next few months. “For her it wasnt even that impressive. Thats saying something. Shes an amazing skier and I kept saying that I thought she was the best slalom skier,” Shiffrin said. “I dont think I own that title, I think she owns it.” Tessa Worley, the Frenchwoman who won a giant slalom in St. Moritz last weekend, was taken to hospital after falling back on her skis and tearing a right knee ligament in the first run. The International Ski Federation said she will miss the rest of the season, ruling her out of the Sochi Olympics in February. Bernadette was .13 seconds faster than Hansdotter and .20 clear of her elder sister after the first run. Marlies, who took slalom bronze at the 2006 Olympics, flew down the Stade Emile Allais course on her second run — .80 seconds faster than Zettel on the first split, .80 quicker on the second, and 1.43 quicker as she crossed the line. Bernadette was more than one second behind. Still, she earned a big hug from Marlies at the finish line for securing her second career podium result, after finishing second at Lenzerheide, Switzerland, in March. Being in the unfamiliar position of leading the race gave her some added stress. “It wasnt too easy to me. I had to breathe deeply to get my heart rate down,” Bernadette said. “Its different to stand up there when youre the last one down.” Worley, the giant slalom world champion, toppled backward before twisting forward and landing in the safety netting. She slowly got back up, and was taken to a hospital in Lyon. No further information was immediately available. “I feel bad for her. She was in really good shape,” Marlies said. “I know what its like to have so many injuries.” Anthony Sechaud, coach of the French women, said the injury likely occurred when Worley got her leg tangled up in the protective netting. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / at 7:46 with a s KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Blue Jays recalled outfielder Anthony Gose and selected the contract of infielder Steve Tolleson from Triple-A Buffalo in an attempt to jumpstart their struggling offence before Thursday nights series finale in Kansas City. To clear roster space, Toronto optioned infielder Jonathan Diaz to Buffalo and designated outfielder Moises Sierra for assignment. “Just looking to beef up the offence a little bit, and add a little team speed, something we dont have a lot of,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. The 23-year-old Gose was in the starting lineup Thursday night, batting ninth and playing left field in place of Melky Cabrera, who left Wednesday nights game when he was hit by a pitch. Cabrera walked through the clubhouse with his bruised left shin tightly wrapped but without a noticeable limp, and Gibbons said its possible he could pinch hit against the Royals. Gibbons also said its possible he could play Friday night when Toronto opens a series in Pittsburgh. “Hes doing better,” Gibbons said. “He got hit pretty good, but theres no crack (in the bone) or anything like that. He just got hit square.” Gose has spent parts of three seasons with the Blue Jays, hitting .238 with three homers and 23 RBIs in 109 games. Hes known for his speed but also his strikeout rate, and Gibbons said Gose must get that under control if hes going to stick as the clubs fourth outfielder. “When it comes down to the big leagues, its about production,” Gibbons said. “Thats why its so hard to make the big leagues for any length of time. Guys go up and down.” Tolleson, who was hitting .236 in 19 games for Buffalo, provides some versatility with the Blue Jays heading into interleague play. He has played in both the infield and outfield, though Gibbons said its likely he will platoon with Chris Getz at second base. “Maybe get a little more offence out of that spot,” Gibbons said. “Hope he does something.” . “I cant say much, we agreed not to say much, but talks are ongoing and Andrei wants to stay in Montreal,” agent and former NHL player Sergei Berezin told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on ESPN.com on Friday. Montreal took eight minor penalties and played almost an entire period shorthanded in their 3-2 loss to a speedy Blue Jackets team on Thursday night. “They were first on the puck, making us react to them, putting us on our heels a bit,” said Lars Eller of a young and energized Columbus team in the heart of a heated playoff race. “When they do that, we take penalties.” Montreal played more than 15 minutes down a man, including 50 seconds on a 5-on-3. Seven different players did time in the penalty box for hooking, tripping, holding, high-sticking and once for having too many men on the ice. Forwards Brian Gionta, Daniel Briere and Max Pacioretty saw their average ice time significantly reduced. “There were a lot of guys sitting on the bench for long stretches that should have been out there,” said Eller. “Its not good for our rhythm. We want to be five guys on the ice.” The undisciplined Canadiens began showing signs of frustration midway through the second period, taking several unwarranted penalties. Newcomer Thomas Vanek gave Columbus Artem Anisimov a slew-foot when he was beaten to the puck, and Ryan White hooked Ryan Johansen after the 21-year-old flew past him. In the third, P.K. Subban and Tomas Plekanec took back-to-back penalties for high-sticking. But as successful as the Blue Jackets were in drawing penalties, their power play was a bit of a dud. Columbus went 0 for 8 with the extra skater, and saw all 13 power-play shots turned away by Carey Price. “Wed love to get a power-play goal,” said Columbus forward Brandon Dubinsky, whose teams power-play unit has not found the back of the net it its last 26 opportunities. “Its going to be important down the stretch. But we didnt earn all those power plays without playing the right way.” Dubinsky scored the go-ahead goal at 6:53 of the second period, at even strength, to give the Blue Jackets a 2-1 lead after burying a juicy rebound past an off-balance Price. “We skated, we were physical, we fore-checked hard,” added Dubinsky. “I liked our tenacity. We created turnovers.” One of those turnovers came on the game-winning goal. Johansen made rookie defenceman Jarred Tinordi pay for a giveaway at the Canadiens blue-line. Johansen intercepted Tinordis weak pass, and beat Price on a partial breakaway for his team-leading 27th goal of the year at 16:59 of the third period. “That doesnt feeel good,” said Tinordi, who had an otherwise solid game, blocking three shots in 15:29 of work.dddddddddddd"Its a stupid play on my part. I put it on my backhand, trying to go through the middle. (Johansens) a quick player. I should have anticipated he was going to be there." The Blue Jackets (36-27-6) showcased their speed from the get-go, setting the tone after the initial faceoff by springing Cam Atkinson on a breakaway in the games first six seconds. Price, who stopped 37 shots for the Canadiens (38-26-7), got the better of him. But it was Prices counterpart, last seasons Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky, who got the better of the Canadiens in the end. Bobrovsky made 25 saves for the win, and has now started the last 16 games for the Blue Jackets as well as 23 of their last 24. The Habs beat Bobrovsky in the first period when Brendan Gallagher turned his stick into a baseball bat, hitting a puck out of mid-air at 14:53 to give the Canadiens the 1-0 lead. After an initial save, Gallagher took a swing at a waist-high puck, which floated above the net, landed on Bobrovsky chest and trickled past the goal-line. Columbus wasted no time finding their equalizer, scoring exactly one minute after the Canadiens. With the youngster Johansen in the box for cross checking, Derek MacKenzie scored a short-handed goal right off the faceoff. The Blue Jackets are now tied for third in the league with nine short-handed goals on the season. After the Canadiens killed off three straight minor penalties to start the third, Vanek made it 2-2 at 7:46 with a slapshot from the face off circle to Bobrovskys right. The Blue Jackets have now collected 15 out of a possible 20 points in their last 10 games (7-2-1). The team is holding on to the last wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Columbus hopes to play post-season hockey for only the second time in the franchises 14-year history. In 2009, they were eliminated by the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference quarter-finals. Notes: Brandon Prust (upper-body injury) was not in the lineup for the Canadiens. Prust was hurt in Tuesdays 6-3 win against the Colorado Avalanche. Ryan White got the start in his place. … RJ Umberger was a healthy scratch for the Blue Jackets. Rene Bourque and Douglas Murray sat out for the Canadiens. … Max Pacioretty hasnt scored in seven games, his longest goal drought since November. Hes two goals shy of 100 with the Canadiens. … The Montreal Impacts Marco Di Vaio, Patrice Bernier and Justin Mapp were in attendance. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / were still talking about two Erika Brown remembers very little about her first Olympics. After all, it was 25 years ago — and she was only 15. “I remember the opening ceremony, marching, bits and pieces of the competition,” Brown said of her time at the 1988 Calgary Games, “but not a heck of a lot, actually.” Now 40, Brown has earned the chance to relive the Olympic experience. On Saturday, she was skip of the rink that swept the playoffs in the U.S. curling trials in Fargo, N.D., to claim a place at the Sochi Olympics in Russia. “Twenty-five years later is bit hard to swallow,” Brown told The Associated Press in a phone interview. “I can barely believe I have been alive that long.” Brown, who also represented her country at 1998 Nagano Games, said this will be her last Olympics. But for a fierce competitor with curling in her blood, somehow its hard to believe her. Her parents, Steve and Diane, both curled for the U.S. and own a big curling store in Madison, Wis. Steve, who coached Erika at the 1988 and 1998 Games, will coach the U.S. wheelchair team in Sochi. Even Erikas younger brother, Craig, is into curling and competed at the mens trials in Fargo. “Its been a family thing since we were little kids,” Erika said. “My mum wasnt sure what to do after I was born, so she took me to watch my dad curl when I was 7 days old. Id probably had only two trips to the doctor by then.” Brown has managed to maintain her motivation and desire to practice curling despite having a day job as a physicians assistant in Ontario, where her patients range from newborns to 90-year-olds, and being a mother of two. If she wraps up her morning appointments, she tries to squeeze in about 30 minutes of curling during her lunch hour at a curling club a short distance from work. That will change in the run-up to Sochi. “I am going to be taking a leave of absence from work, probably in January,” Brown said. “That should allow me to have more relaxed practices, where I can be a little more deliberate and take my time.” Brown certainly didnt appear underprepared in Fargo last week, clinching victory over Allison Pottingers team at the Scheels Arena with a draw into the four-foot with the final stone of the game. Her teammates — Debbie McCormick, Jessica Schultz and Ann Swisshelm — are all former Olympians and Browns rink should contend for a medal in Sochi. “We just found a great combination with this team about three years ago when we got together. Our goal was to make it back to the Olympics and we have,” Brown said. “I think anyone who has been to the Olympics once has some pretty built-in motivation to go back. Its such a privileged experience to be part of Team USA, wearing your nation on your back. That experience alone has been a pretty big motivator for the past 25 years.” When Brown took time away from school to compete in Calgary, curling was only a demonstration sport. It was again in 1992 before returning to the Olympic program in Nagano. The U.S. rink didnt get past the round-robin stage then, and an Olympic medal remains the thing missing from Browns resume that includes world and national titles. “Olympic gold?” Brown said. “That would be a pretty sweet one of sew it all up with.” . On Saturday night, Shine left AT&T Park with a souvenir game ball for his heads-up performance behind the scenes in a 5-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants. It saved Miami from giving up an early run that could have swung the momentum. Marlins manager Mike Redmond requested a review of whether Brandon Hicks touched first base on a second-inning double. The play was overturned in 2 minutes, 42 seconds, and became a putout from the pitcher to first baseman. That left Hector Sanchez on third base with two outs, and Brandon Crawford ended the inning on a deep fly to centre. “That was unbelievable. In my mind, Pat Shine won the game today,” winning pitcher Tom Koehler said. “I looked at the replay to see how close it was. Second inning of the game and if youre wrong you burn your challenge in the second inning. Hes been doing a great job all year and thats why he got the game ball today when we came in from the field. Thats no joke. He got the game ball.” Giancarlo Stanton homered and tripled to back Koehler (4-3) in his first road win. He struck out seven in seven innings to finally win in five tries away from South Florida after coming into his outing 0-3 on the road to start the year. He allowed four hits and walked two in his first road victory since Sept. 22, at Washington. Garrett Jones hit an RBI triple, Jarrod Saltalamacchia had a sacrifice fly and Adeiny Hechavarria singled to drive in a run for Miami. The Marlins improved to 11-2 at AT&T Park since 2011. Tim Lincecum (3-3), coming off his best start of the year with an 11-strikeout performance in a season-high 7 2-3 innings to beat Atlanta on Monday, never found his groove. On a night thousands in the sellout crowd donned orange giveaway Fedoras, the Giants were handed consecutive home losses for just the second time all year and first since April 9-10 against Arizona. San Francisco figures it missed a scoring opportunity in the second via a replay review. Giants coach Shawon Dunston, who works the replay room in the clubhouse, said the right call was made — though Hicks thhought he glanced the bag.dddddddddddd He didnt plan to watch the replay, ready to move on from the mistake. “The umpires were right,” Dunston said. “He didnt touch it. They got it right.” Stanton, whose career-high 17-game hitting streak ended with an 0 for 5 on Friday, hit a two-out triple in the third — his first since Sept. 15, 2012, off Cincinnatis Johnny Cueto. Stanton hit his 12th homer in the seventh. Kevin Slowey, Miamis third pitcher, got into trouble in the ninth and Steve Cishek entered to finish the six-hit shutout with his ninth save. San Francisco went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position and left nine on base. “Ive said this many times, when you dont hit and score runs, you look flat,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “That was the game. We couldnt knock in runs.” Suspended infielder Miguel Tejada was quoted as telling ESPN Deportes he had signed a minor league contract with the Marlins pending a physical. He served 41 games of a 105-game suspension last year for testing positive for an amphetamine. Tejada would be eligible to play in the Marlins 65th game, which barring rainouts would be June 10 at Texas. He could appear in minor league games at Double-A or lower on May 31. NOTES: Giants C Buster Posey had the night off until grounding out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth. … Giants RHP Tim Hudson tested his strained left hip with an up-tempo throwing session on flat ground and was scheduled to throw a bullpen Sunday. Hes on target to make his next start Thursday at Colorado. He made 30-40 throws from up to about 80 feet. … Both managers were still talking about two exclamation-point catches a night earlier — Stantons grab of a fly by Michael Morse at the StubHub! sign in right field and San Francisco CF Angel Pagans over-the-shoulder catch of a ball by Derek Dietrich at the YAHOO! sign in left-centre. Pagan landed hard on his left shoulder trying to make a diving catch Saturday. … Giants athletic trainer Dave Groeschner remains optimistic of 2B Marco Scutaro returning from a back injury this year. “Thats our goal,” Groeschner said. Téma: Jak postupovat / d the importance of taking adv Washington Capitals 4 Winnipeg Jets 2 (Jets 28-26-5, road 14-15-1) – The win was the sixth straight game that the Caps have beaten the Jets, snapping the Jets winning streak at three. The Jets have still won nine of 12, and five of seven on the road. They are 2-1 on this four game trip, with three straight games against Eastern Conference teams. They close with a divisional game in St. Louis Saturday afternoon. (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). Then its the Olympic break with the Jets back in action on Feb. 27 at home against Phoenix. With Vancouver losing, the Jets still sit two points out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the west. The Jets will close with 22 games in 44 days. Troy Brouwer and Bryan Little exchanged goals in the first, as the period ended 1-1 with shots favoured the Jets 14-11. Braden Holtby stopped the initial shot by Little, but the rebound bounced in off Martin Erat. For Little it was his 18th of the year. Andrew Ladd assisted on the goal to extend his point streak to four games, 1-4-5. The Jets took the lead in the second on a nice three-way passing play between Olli Jokinen, Devin Setoguchi and Dustin Byfuglien, Byfuglien getting the goal, his 13th of the year. Jets outshot the Caps 16-7 in the second. The third period started with the Caps on their fourth power play of the game, but they were unable to beat Ondrej Pavelec. But they seemed to build momentum off the man advantage with Tom Wilson tying the game at 3:38. Then the leagues top goal-scorer Alex Ovechkin poked home a loose puck for his 40th of the year to give the Caps the lead. Toby Enstrom was tied up in front with Nicklas Backstrom who ended up on top of Pavelec, but the goal stood. Late in the period Brouwer with his second of the night put the game away. Caps outshot the Jets 12-6 in the third as the Jets appeared to run out of steam. The Jets had 50 hits in the game, 12 by Mark Stuart. Enstrom led the Jets in ice time at 25:07, Byfuglien in shots on goal with six. The Caps came into the game leading the NHL in power play goals, but the Jets penalty kill was again terrific, going four for four.?? In the last five road games the Jets are 16-for-16 on the PK. For the first time since Paul Maurice took over, Stuart and Jacob Trouba were on the minus side of the plus-minus stats. After not getting a power play in Carolina, the Jets just had one in this game. “They got some breaks and bounces,” said Maurice post-game. “Proud of our effort through two periods, couldnt make it three. We spent a lot of energy on the four penalty kills. They got better in the third, their “D” got involved. Well leave this game here and move on.” During the break the Jets have planned an outdoor practice that is free to the public at the Forks on Feb. 23. Subban following the Canadiens Game 7 win over the Bruins in the second round, after the Montreal defenceman planted a huge kiss on McGuires forehead as he exclaimed, “Yeah baby!” before heading off to celebrate with his teammates in their dressing room. “I didnt see that coming at all,” McGuire told TSN.ca recently. But what McGuire has always seen coming was the performance and level of play Subban showed in the Canadiens run through to Game 6 of the 2014 Eastern Conference Final. Subban finished the playoffs with 14 points in 17 games, with seven of those points coming in that series win over the Bruins. He played a major role in helping Montreal upset the Presidents Trophy winners and helped lead his team to within two wins of their first Stanley Cup Final berth in 21 years. As McGuire pointed out, it wasnt just Subbans skill – that helped him win the 2013 Norris Trophy – that allowed him to take a big step forward in the playoffs, but also the enthusiasm he showed in that interview and how he applies that both on and off the ice. “I remember when P.K. went to his first World Junior Championship and talking to him before he flew over to Pardubice,” McGuire said. “He was beaming and just so excited to go over there and to be part of the experience. Obviously then he was such a raw talent and hes worked hard to get to where he is now. But that excitement and enthusiasm for the game has never faded. Its still there now and thats a main reason for what youre seeing now. Thats why hes a leader. He loves the game; he plays it the right way and youre seeing that more and more now. Can he improve? Yes and hell tell you that. But what youre seeing now is the potential anyone who knew him well saw.” While winning the Norris Trophy last season impressed his teammates, that passion for the game and what he did to help the Canadiens go deep into the playoffs was equally if not more impressive. “Hes definitely maturing and hes showing why he won the Norris Trophy,” said teammate Carey Price on Saturday. “He had an excellent postseason. For us to win the Cup, were going to need him to play that way. Hes a fun-loving guy; hes fun to hang out with and he makes it enjoyable to come to the rink every day. Hes a really good buddy of mine obviously and I was happy to see him succeed in the playoffs and prove a lot of doubters wrong.” Canadiens defenceman Mike Weaver was acquired at the trade deadline and in his short time as Subbans teammate, realized how infectious the 25-year-olds love of the game was having an effect on him..dddddddddddd “I think a lot of the time the enjoyment of the game is sometimes forgotten,” said Weaver, who is an unrestricted free agent in July. “You almost gotta get back to the time when you had fun playing hockey and instead of it being a job, its more of a privilege. Playing with him and even in playing in Montreal, I started to enjoy the game again.” When told of Weavers comments, a flattered Subban told the media that enjoying the game and embracing the moment has always been an important part of his approach. “I enjoy every moment,” Subban said on Saturday. “Through the ups and downs you have to because as much as careers are long, theyre short too. You just dont know what can happen so you have to enjoy your time when youre out there. The playoffs are a fun time to play and I obviously enjoy playing that time of year.” Subban, who is a restricted free agent again this July (this time with arbitration rights), will continue to be a hot topic as the offseason gets under way. But before he headed off for what will be his shortest summer yet as an NHLer, he made it clear he wants to continue to enjoy the playoff moments with the Canadiens and help them build towards and achieve their ultimate goal of winning their 25th Stanley Cup. “Theres something about that,” Subban explained. “Theres something about building a team and being part of a special group that youve seen grow from the bottom up and add blocks along the way. Theres something special about winning with a team like that. I believe we have an opportunity to do that here. I look at the Montreal Canadiens winning the Cup in 93 and only being to the conference finals two times since then, and Ive been to them both times. A lot of guys go their whole career and never make it to a conference final and get to within two wins of a Stanley Cup Final, so I understand the importance of taking advantage of those moments. Its unfortunate we didnt get that done this year, but I know that the future is bright and theres going to be plenty of opportunities for us to redeem ourselves and take that next step.” James Murphy is a freelance reporter who also writes for NHL.com, the Boston Herald and XNsports.com. Téma: Jak postupovat / ns, teammates and his FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS 1. KYLE LOWRY (Raptors): This is great news for Raps fans. He was in a nice spot with demand from other teams and he cashed in quite well. Bottom line, market value sets the price point and its the cost of doing business. Hes the heart and soul of their team and was an important guy to keep, mission accomplished. This is an important point to consider – the fact that he makes more money doesnt mean hes going to be an even better player than he was last year. Its a tough thing for players who sign big deals; they feel they need to live up to the money and contract. Realistically, if he can provide them what he did last season on a consistent basis and stay healthy the next three to four years – where do I sign up? Good get even if the money is a tad bit high but again its all about right place and right time for Lowry and for the Raptors. Its a deal that makes both good basketball and organizational sense. I love the addition of Patrick Patterson as a restricted free agent to the mix as well. Hes a good young player whose best days lie ahead for him. His perimeter shooting, defence, rebounding and overall toughness are a good piece for this group. Obviously, he ended up being for the Raps what Andrea Bargnani was supposed to be yet at a much more reasonable price. Good deal. Hopefully Greivis Vasquez gets done soon as well. Fingers crossed. Off to a nice start though. Masai Ujiris surely has planned his work and is working his plan. 2. BEN GORDON (Magic): What a Country! I cant believe he got a two-year deal, even if whole money amount isnt guaranteed. Im sure if former Detroit Pistons president, Joe Dumars is walking on a beach this summer thinking about the moves that cost him his job; this guy and Charlie Villaneuvas deals are right at the top of the list. He gets another chance to resuscitate his career with Magic but Im skeptical of this one. 3. SHAUN LIVINGSTON (Warriors): Im happy for him. Hes battled back from major injury in his career and hes not the player he once was in his early Clippers days, but he has reinvented himself and thats a testament to his work ethic and character. Hes a dependable pro and plays the game hard and right. Hell be a nice mature addition to Coach Steve Kerrs locker room. 4 LeBRON JAMES (Heat): Pat Rileys has to be sweating a bit here. So far no luck attracting the other pieces to compliment the King and hes evaluating his options as he should. He is legitimate by the contract he and the heat negotiated in good faith. Who knows how it will all work out with him and even a guy like Carmelo Anthony. Bottom line, guys want to get paid at the highest level as well as the mid and lower tier players. Your sales pitch as a team beyond winning is still how much cap space do you have and what percentage of it am I getting? 5. NO STATE INCOME TAX: You hear this all the time about states like Texas and Florida, that their free agent pitches have a built in competitive advantage. Heres my question; in cap-centric leagues like the NBA, NHL and NFL, I wonder why this loophole wouldnt be closed. In my opinion, the cap is set up to level the playing field and teams in states that have a distinct advantage with the net income equation have the upper hand. Not sure if this has ever been considered but my thought is based upon this advantage – why dont the leagues set the cap based upon what the money means on the back end in net income per team, so its equal. In 98 per cent of the cases youre dealing with players that are in the highest taxable tax bracket in their state or Country, so why not do the research and base the cap number (which is equal) to the after tax value in each market and even the cap that way. Again, Im not sure if its ever been discussed or if it even makes any sense, Im just thinking out loud. Its probably too complicated an issue to work on but for the life of me I cant tell you why those teams in tax friendly states gain a major advantage. Its an issue for minds much greater than mine (not saying much there!) to figure out. Probably a wasted thought but thats what Im here for! Have a GREAT weekend! But the quarterback hopes to stay involved in football after officially calling it quits Tuesday. “Id love to look at those opportunities as they arise,” Pierce said in an interview from his Winnipeg eatery. "(Football) is my passion. Ive always been a student of the game and looked up to coaches. “Obviously, (the passion doesnt end) just because you stop playing. That competitive fire will never burn out.” Pierce split last season between the Lions and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, throwing for 1,176 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions. Over nine seasons with Winnipeg and B.C., he completed 1,200 passes for 15,289 yards, 76 TDs and 63 interceptions. “I feel pretty good about (retiring) actually,” he said. "I feel that, over the last nine years, its been a great career for me. I enjoyed every minute of it. The teammates, the organizations were the part that were great experiences for me. Its a hard day also, in a way, for me because its what Ive known. Its what Ive been about for the most part of my life. “So its a big day in both ways. But Im also excited about the next phase of my life and moving on.” Pierce, a 32-year-old Hutchinson, Kan., native who played collegiately at New Mexico State, originally signed with the Lions in 2005. He was a key member of the club as both a backup and starter through five seasons before playing 3 1/2 seasons with the Blue Bombers. He returned to B.C. last September in a trade that brought wide receiver Akeem Foster to Winnipeg. “Buck was a fearless competitor who never hesitated to put his body on the line for our organization,” Lions general manager Wally Buono said in a news release. Pierces career was marred by multiple injuries as he chose to take a hit instead of sliding or running out of bounds before getting tackled. But he said the rewards were worth the punishment. “I wouldnt change anything I played the game the way that I felt this game should be played, and I felt that I represented myself extremely well on and off the field,” he said. “Theres always going to be critics, and people are going to say what theyre going to say, but at the end of the day, I represented myself and my family and this league in a positive way.” He won a Grey Cup with the Lions in 2006 and led the Bombers to the 2011 championship game, where they lost 34-23 to B.C. “Obviously, winning the Grey Cup in 06 was a big pointt in my life,” he said.dddddddddddd "Theres lots of memories. You dont necessarily remember all of the big wins and stuff like that. But when you play almost a decade, you have lots of teammates and you see lots of teammates be traded and all these things, so you have lots of memories that stick with you. “Obviously, when I helped the Bombers get to a Grey Cup in Vancouver, that was a big part, and I felt very good about what we accomplished that year.” His final CFL campaign, when he was relegated to third-string status with the Blue Bombers before being dealt, was “extremely difficult.” “But its all about what he you take away from situations and what you learn,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to get traded to B.C., where it all started, and I had some great games at the end of the year. Im privileged and excited to be retiring as a Lion.” Pierce had “extremely minor” arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder following the season and would have needed to get another contract from the Lions. But neither his health nor contract issues affected the decision to retire. “I didnt know what was going to happen (after) last year,” he said. “I wanted it to be my decision. It wasnt money. It wasnt about injuries. It wasnt about anything else. It was about where I was at my point in my career and moving forward and taking that next step — and about taking advantage of some of the opportunities that I have out there.” Noting he had reached a state of contentment, Pierce expressed gratitude to fans, teammates and his two clubs alike. “The CFL and Canada have been great to me,” he said. “Ive been fortunate to have amazing teammates, great mentors all throughout my career, and have played in great cities in the league — and became a part of the culture here in Canada.” He and his wife Lori, who is from Winnipeg, live in the Manitoba capital and plan to reside there until the future opportunities take them somewhere else. “Winnipegs the place that I call home right now,” said Pierce. After announcing Pierces retirement, the Lions also announced the signings of quarterbacks John Beck and Jarrett Lee. Pending any early cuts following a mini-camp, the Lions are slated to have five quarterbacks at training camp in June in Kamloops, B.C. In addition to starter Travis Lulay, whose recovery from off-season shoulder surgery is considered ahead of schedule, the Lions have holdover QBs Joey Elliott, the apparent No. 2 at this point, and second-year pro Chris Hart. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / h the Flames because, with INDIANAPOLIS — All Hakeem Nicks really wanted in free agency was a chance to resuscitate a once-promising career. He was willing to play on a one-year deal, he was willing to work out a fair price and his only significant requirement was finding another star quarterback who could get him the ball. On Friday, the former Giants receiver found his new team: Indianapolis. “Hakeem is a big, tough, and highly competitive wide receiver who knows what it takes to win,” Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said in a statement issued by the team. “His big-play potential requires attention from the defence every time hes out on the field. He adds another highly talented playmaker to our offence.” Terms of the deal were not immediately available, though it is believed to be for one year. Nicks was the Giants first-round pick in 2009, and became an immediate contributor. He had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2010 and 2011 and was part of the Giants Super Bowl-winning team following the 2011 season. But injuries sidetracked his career the past two seasons. In 2012, Nicks was limited to just 53 catches, 692 yards and three touchdown catches in 13 games. The numbers were marginally better last season when played in 15 games. He finished with 56 catches and 896 yards but failed to score a touchdown. The Colts believe if Nicks is healthy, he can help them. The 26-year-old Nicks joins a receiving corps led by perennial Pro Bowl player Reggie Wayne, who is rehabilitating from a torn ACL, and emerging young star T.Y. Hilton. And, of course, Nicks will be catching passes from one of the NFLs best young quarterbacks in Andrew Luck. Indy was in the market for another receiver after last years free-agent flier on Darrius Heyward-Bey didnt work. And with Wayne trying to come back from his own injury, the Colts wanted another veteran to help mould a large group of young receivers. Since joining the Colts in January 2012, Grigson has been unafraid to take some calculated gambles. He traded a second-round pick to Miami for up-and-down cornerback Vontae Davis, a move that has panned out. Last year, he traded a first-round pick to Cleveland for running back Trent Richardson, a move that drew widespread scrutiny when Richardson didnt live up to the expectations of a top-five draft pick. He took a chance last year on receiver Darrius Heyward-Bye, a move that didnt work out, and he now has another injury prone former Giant to go along with running back Ahmad Bradshaw, who signed with Indy in June and re-signed this week. It goes against our ingrained notion, particularly in sports, that hard work is rewarded and that players create their own luck. But, the truth is, there are so many things that happen on the ice over which a single player has little to no control. Advanced stats pioneer Gabriel Desjardins has taken the position that, in a given season, 38% of the standings results are luck-driven. (Start with shootouts and go from there.) When it comes to individual players, there are a couple of numbers to look at to see if a player has been lucky, getting the bounces, whatever, and that is contributing to better-than-expected results. On-ice shooting percentage refers to the 5-on-5 shooting percentage of all players when a particular player is on the ice. League average goaltending offers about a .922 save percentage in 5-on-5 situations so, naturally, average on-ice shooting percentages come in at 7.8%. Not every player shoots the puck with the same effectiveness, but even the best skaters can only have so much impact on a metric that involves four other skaters at any given time. Very few players can, over the long haul, generate a substantially higher on-ice shooting percentage because it is so dependent on the performance of others. Sure, Sidney Crosby can hover over 11% and random fourth-liners hang around 5% year after year, but somewhere in between is where the vast majority of players fall. (Since 2007, among skaters to play at least 1000 minutes at 5-on-5, 592 of 796 skaters — 74.4% — fall between 6.5% and 9.0% on-ice shooting.) The opposite angle of that percentage game is a players on-ice save percentage during 5-on-5 situations and this is another number that, over a larger sample, is beyond a skaters control. A lot of it will depend on the goaltender, though a factor like quality of competition can play into those results too. If youre facing top lines every night, for example, its not easy to hold their shooting percentages to five or six percent. While the standard short-form measure for whether a player has been lucky is PDO (which combines on-ice shooting and save percentages), I thought I would break it into components because, while the tendency is to have a PDO around 1000 over the long haul, there are players that are outside that range. Of 796 skaters to play at least 1000 5-on-5 minutes over the past seven seasons, 39 players have a cumulative PDO higher than 102.00, while 44 players have a PDO lower than 98.00. That leaves 713 of 796 (89.6%) within that 98-102 range. What Ive done is pulled out those players that have the largest differential from their previously-established on-ice shooting and save percentages to see who has benefited or being punished, essentially, by luck. (minimum 1000 5-on-5 minutes 2007-2013; 500 5-on-5 minutes this season) HIGH ON-ICE SHOOTING Francois Beauchemin, D, Anaheim 2007-2013 On-ice SH%: 6.86 2013-14 On-ice SH%: 11.30 Difference: +4.44 Vladimir Sobotka, C, St. Louis 2007-2013 On-ice SH%: 5.91 2013-14 On-ice SH%: 9.14 Difference: +3.23 Ryan Getzlaf, C, Anaheim 2007-2013 On-ice SH%: 9.51 2013-14 On-ice SH%: 12.62 Difference: +3.11 Tyler Bozak, C, Toronto 2007-2013 On-ice SH%: 8.43 2013-14 On-ice SH%: 11.40 Difference: +2.97 Its difficult for individual players to affect on-ice shooting percentage, but especially so for defencemen, because they tend not to shoot the puck as often as forwards. So, Francois Beauchemin being far above his previous norms can be tied to spending a lot of his time on the ice with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. Oh, and it turns out that Getzlaf is even having more success than usual this year. Blues C Vladimir Sobotka is an interesting case because hes spent much of his career as a third and fourth-liner, and been plenty effective in that role, but with St. Louis, hes had the opportunity to move up the depth chart. His most common linemates have been Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko, much better than typical checking line fare, and that should be at least part of the reason for his dramatic increase. Then we get to Tyler Bozak, the Maple Leafs centre who has come under so much criticism in recent seasons, but has quieted critics this season, scoring 45 points in 53 games. Certainly, Bozak reaps the rewards of playing with Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk on Torontos top line, but thats not unfamiliar territory — Bozak has played a lot with Kessel over the years — so the conclusion to be drawn from this is that Bozak (like anyone far exceeding their established norms) is likely due for some regression because, no matter how much of a Tyler Bozak supporter you might be, theres no argument to be made that he somehow creates scoring chances at the same calibre of Sidney Crosby over the long haul. LOW ON-ICE SHOOTING Bryan Bickell, LW, Chicago 2007-2013 On-ice SH%: 9.05 2013-14 On-ice SH%: 5.88 Difference: |

Téma: Jak postupovat / re a run in six of KANSAS CITY, Mo. — While Salvador Perez came up with the winning hit right after Nori Aoki made the game-saving catch. Salvador Perez hit a go-ahead RBI double with two outs in the eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 Saturday. Alex Gordon doubled off left-hander Scott Downs (0-1) before Perez hit Maikel Cletos second pitch down the left-field line. Wade Davis (1-1) let the White Sox tie it at three when gave up two runs in the eighth on two singles, a walk, a hit batter and sacrifice fly. Greg Holland worked around a leadoff walk for his second save in two days. Royals right fielder Aoki prevented the White Sox from taking a lead when he made a lunging catch of Alexei Ramirez line drive to end the eighth with two runners on base. “Nori made a tremendous catch that saved the game from being cracked open there,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. Aoki, a six-time Gold Glove winner in centre field in Japan, got a good jump on Ramirezs scorcher. “It was a situation where we couldnt give up any more runs,” Aoki said through an interpreter. “That was the play I was most happy with. The only thing was the sun was in my eyes.” Ramirez already had two singles and believed he had one over extra bases over Aokis head. “I dont think it got up in the wind enough to have a chance,” Paul Konerko said “Thats what the game comes down to sometimes, something so small.” Conor Gillaspie hit an RBI single in the eighth before Konerkos sacrifice fly tied it and gave him 146 RBIs against Kansas City, the most by any opponent. Royals left-hander Bruce Chen allowed one unearned run on six singles, walked none and struck out seven in 6 1-3 innings, but had to settle for a no-decision. White Sox left-hander John Danks did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, when six straight Kansas City batters reached base. “I wish I had an explanation for it,” Danks said. “It was the heart of the lineup. I was trying to come inside and just lost control a little. Hosmer I got behind 2-0 and you dont want to make too good a pitch to him.” Omar Infante, Eric Hosmer, Butler and Alex Gordon opened the inning with singles. Butlers single scored Infante for the first run, while Mike Moustakas walked with the bases loaded for the other run. Butler drove in another run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly. “John just had the one inning where it got out of hand and he lost his control and it came back to bite us,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. Moustakas fielding error led to an unearned White Sox run in the fifth. Adam Eatons groundout scored Ramirez. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Ricky Romero made sure the Toronto Blue Jays finally had some success against David Price. Romero allowed one hit over eight innings and Jose Bautista hit his 32nd homer of the season Tuesday as the Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays and their all-star pitcher 3-1. “Its fun pitching against him,” Romero said. “Were good friends. We have talked about it. It was definitely fun going out there to battle against him and Im happy we came out in front.” Romero (9-9), who didnt allow a hit until Desmond Jennings started the sixth with a homer, struck out seven and walked four over eight innings. Jon Rauch allowed two-out singles in the ninth to Casey Kotchman and B.J. Upton before retiring Matt Joyce on a fly to left on a 3-0 pitch for his 10th save. Price (9-10), who entered with eight wins and a no-decision in nine career starts against Toronto, gave up three runs and five hits in 6 2-3 inning. The Rays have scored once while Price has been on the mound during his last three starts. “Somebodys going to go through that every year,” Price said. “These guys are trying. Thats part of it.” Tampa Bay was one-hit by Seattles Michael Pineda in a 3-2 loss to the Mariners last Saturday. The Rays have lost 11 of 17. Toronto, which is three games over .500 (56-53) for the first time since April 8, also got a homer from Yunel Escobar. Blue Jays manager John Farrell said there was no thought given to having Romero going out for the ninth after throwing 109 pitches. Bautista put the Blue Jays ahead 1-0 on his first homer in 15 games — snapping a drought of 46 at-bats without one — on a fourth-inning shot off Price. The Toronto slugger is 9-for-22 with four homers against the Rays left-hander. “It was good to see Jose get a 2-0 fastball and do what hes very muuch capable of doing,” Farrell said.dddddddddddd. Tampa Bay had reliever J.P. Howell intentionally walked Bautista with no one on base and two outs in the eighth. Howell then retired Adam Lind on a grounder. Escobar made it 2-0 on a homer in the sixth. Jennings, hitless in his previous 13 at-bats, got the Rays to 2-1 on his shot in the bottom of the inning. Rajai Davis RBI double, which ended Prices night, extended the Blue Jays advantage to 3-1 in the seventh. Tampa Bay loaded the bases — on two walks and a hit batter — in the second, but didnt score when Romero struck out Joyce and Kelly Shoppach before getting an inning-ending grounder from Sean Rodriguez. “He had a tough first couple innings,” Farrell said. “He created a jam in the second that he found a way to pitch out of it. He used his curveball really effectively against Joyce, against Shoppach to get a couple key strikeouts. He didnt let the early frustration linger too long.” The Rays have loaded the bases 11 times this season with no outs, and failed to score a run in six of those opportunities. “To get the bases loaded early … thats a great chance for us to get on top,” Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. “Romero, if you dont get him early, and he gets out of a couple of jams, or a jam, he normally sets in, which he did again. We have to do better. Bases loaded, weve been bad at that play and weve got to get better.” NOTES: Tampa Bay executive vice-president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman was at the ballpark, three days after having an appendectomy. … Farrell said RHP Jesse Litsch could remain in the bullpen the final two months of the season to help decide where he is best suited to pitch. … Tampa Bay C John Jaso (right oblique strain) could resume swinging a bat by the end of the week. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / Nick Diaz," St. Pierre said. "I OKLAHOMA CITY — NBA scoring leader Kevin Durant marveled at what Jamal Crawford did to his team. Crawford scored 36 points to help the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 125-117 on Sunday afternoon. Durant scored 42 points, but such performances are almost expected from him. Crawford, on the other hand, averages about 19 points. Hes known to be streaky, and in this game, he was on. He made 5 of 8 three-pointers, many of which were launched from well beyond the line. “Jamal Crawford comes across halfcourt shooting,” Durant said. “Youve got confidence once you start seeing the ball go in the rim.” Matt Barnes scored 24 points, Chris Paul had 18 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds, Blake Griffin scored 20 points and DeAndre Jordan added 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Clippers, who snapped a two-game skid and beat the team with the leagues best record. “We were on the plane yesterday flying here and we were just talking about how we hadnt beaten any good teams on the road, any really good teams, and this would be a perfect time to start,” Paul said. “Doc (Clippers coach Doc Rivers) was on us, telling us that in the playoffs, youre going to lose a home game at some point and youve got to be able to win on the road. Hopefully this is a win for us that gets us moving.” Durant also had 10 assists, and Serge Ibaka added 20 points for the Thunder, who lost their second straight. It was the most points the Thunder have allowed this season, and it came on the heels of a 103-81 home loss to Miami on Thursday. “Weve just got to get over this little slow stretch that were in,” Durant said. “Wed better. Weve got to play defence. Thats the thing. We cant just let teams come in here and do whatever they want offensively.” Oklahoma City overcame a 15-point deficit late in the third quarter to take a 115-112 lead on a three-pointer by Durant with 2:43 to play, but the Clippers controlled the game from there. A three-pointer by Crawford with 1:30 remaining gave Los Angeles a 119-115 lead. Crawford scored again on a floating jumper in the final minute to push the lead to 121-117. “Jamal made timely shots,” Paul said. “Every time they made a run and we just needed a bucket, Jamal was our guy.” Oklahoma Citys Russell Westbrook missed a three-pointer on the other end, and Paul made two free throws to extend the Clippers lead to six. Paul sprained his right thumb against Memphis on Friday, and he wasnt sure hed play. “I think the credit goes to our training staff,” he said. “I came here to the arena thinking that I wasnt playing, but they found a way.” The Clippers shot 66 per cent in the first half to take a 72-66 lead at the break. Barnes made a three-pointer with 9.8 seconds left in the first half, and a loose ball foul was called on Ibaka away from the shot. Griffin made the free throw to give the Clippers a 72-64 lead. Durant closed the half with a long two-pointer. The Clippers scored 44 points in the second quarter, just short of their season high of 46 in a period. The Clippers had 27 fast-break points at halftime. “We really couldnt get ourselves in front of them, and they were beating us down the floor early, and it gave them some confidence and led them to winning the game,” Westbrook said. Griffin hit a three-pointer to push the Clippers lead to 91-79 with 3:26 left in the third quarter. Darren Collisons layup pushed the lead to 95-80 late in the third quarter, but Oklahoma City outscored the Clippers 13-4 in the final two minutes of the period to cut its deficit to 99-93. Derek Fisher hit two 3-pointers to start the rally, and then Durant made a 3 with 1.6 seconds left in the quarter. The Thunder trimmed the Clippers edge to a point on a pair of free throws by Jeremy Lamb, and Fisher tied it at 107 on a 3-pointer with just over six minutes to play. The Clippers kept the offence working from there, holding on for a win that they hope launches their playoff push. “Its very important,” Crawford said. “Coming down the stretch, we just want to continue to do our game, every single night, no matter who were playing. It doesnt matter. As long as we keep getting better down the stretch, I think well be in good shape.” NOTES: The Clippers made their first five shots. … Thunder centre Kendrick Perkins missed Sundays game against the Los Angeles Clippers with a strained left groin. He was injured during the third quarter of Oklahoma Citys loss to Miami on Thursday night. Steven Adams, a rookie, got his third career start in Perkins place. … Rivers and Crawford were issued technical fouls in the first quarter. Paul was given one in the second quarter. … Clippers guard J.J. Redick sat out with a bulging disc in his lower back. He had missed the previous six games. He has played in just 30 games this season while dealing with wrist, hip and back injuries. He averages 15.7 points and 2.2 assists per game. Unlike whatever unknown reason (Diaz posted a short YouTube clip Wednesday apologizing that he didnt make the “beauty pageant”) that kept Diaz away from the biggest fight — and payday — of his life, the only reservations Condit had in quickly returning UFC president Dana Whites phone call offering the bout — was he first had to wipe away some tears. “It was a little embarrassing cause I was actually crying there in front of everyone,” said Condit — who was eating at one of his favorite restaurants, the Flying Star in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after a morning training session — when he learned he would replace Diaz on the Halloween Weekend show in Las Vegas. “I called my dad (Brian) first thing. Hes been my biggest supporter in my career,” continued Condit, who quickly tried to book the first flight he could to Vegas, where he arrived about 6:30 p.m. PST and went straight to UFC studios to do promotional shoots and interviews. Much like the shock that St-Pierre (22-2 MMA record) exhibited on Tuesday and Wednesday when Diaz no-showed media conferences in both Toronto and Las Vegas, Condit (27-5) cant comprehend while the 28-year-old Stockton, Calif. fighter would pass up such an important career opportunity. “I dont know what Nicks mindset is, and Im not gonna sit here and pretend that I do, but it blows me away that he blew this unbelievable opportunity because he simply didnt want to talk to people,” Condit said Thursday during a media gathering at the Four Seasons hotel. “Some of the press said earlier that he could have came here, thrown his hoody over his head and gave everybody the finger and he still would have had the fight. I dont care what you do for a living. If you dont show up to do youre job, youre gonna get fired. And thats what happened.” While Diazs loss was Condits gain, the 27-year-old Albuquerque native in no way feels he backed into his championship opportunity. “I earned it. No matter what happened with Diaz and that whole thing, I think that Im legitimately the No. 1 contender, and Ive earned this shot,” said the former WEC champ, who has won 12-of-13 fights — including four straight wins and impressive finishes over Dong Hyun Kim, Dan Hardy and Rory MacDonald in his last three bouts. Condit certainly couldnt have predicted the turn of events that took place to land him his title tilt, but even before he began training for B.J. Penn for their scheduled UFC 137 bout on Oct. 29, Condit wanted to keep himself in championship-level shape. “After my fight wwith Dong Hyun Kim, I told my manager, Im going to get right back into the gym; something might happen, Diaz might get hurt,” Condit said.dddddddddddd. "I just kind of said it in passing, and this is how it turned out. Sometimes youve just got to roll with it and take life as it comes. “Im really excited about this opportunity. I think Ive been preparing for this my whole life.” And he knows that hes preparing for one of the most dominant champions in UFC history with the 30-year-old St-Pierre, who has won nine straight fights in the Octagon dating back to April 2007. “Its a tough puzzle to solve honestly,” Condit said, of trying to game plan for GSP. "Hes got great striking, his explosiveness, his ability to close distance not only with strikes, but to use his takedowns to impose his wrestling. “I dont know. Honestly Im going to have to sit down and talk to my trainers and figure out how were going to pull this off.” But Condits trainer – the famed Greg Jackson – who also is St-Pierres main man, publicly stated Thursday that he wont corner either fighter. “Since Ive been at Jacksons, he (St-Pierre) hasnt been there a whole lot, and when he has, weve kind of stayed to our respective sides of the gym. I think that we saw this on the horizon. I definitely did,” said Condit, who will train with Mike Winkeljohn and Chris Luttrell. “There will be some adjustments, but Ive trained with Chris Luttrell for years and years and years — since I was a teenager. I feel like Im in great hands. Were going to do what we need to do to be prepared for this fight.” St-Pierre promised the same on Wednesday, despite the shortened seven-week training camp, and said he believes Condits diverse style offers a stiffer test than a fight with Diaz would. “I do believe Carlos Condit is more dangerous than Nick Diaz,” St. Pierre said. "If they fought, I would put my money on Carlos Condit, so for me its a bigger challenge. “Condit has more power, way more diversity of attack than Nick Diaz has. I think hes going to be a way more dangerous opponent than Nick Diaz.” Condit promised as much Thursday, saying while he has the utmost respect for the 170-pound champ, he can be beaten. “Hes a man. Hes a human. Hes not invincible. Hes not this machine that is untouchable,” said Condit of St-Pierre, whose last loss came when he relinquished his welterweight title to Matt Serra at UFC 69 in April of 2007. “Georges is the biggest star in MMA, and its an honour to fight him. Its an honor to even be mentioned in the same sentence as Georges, honestly. But Im trying to cement a legacy. I want to be known as one of the greatest fighters in the world when Im done with this. This is another step in that direction.” ’ ’ ’ |
