Edmonton made it 4-1 with four minutes left in the second as Eberle tried to hit Smyth in front for this record-setting power-play goal, but the puck caromed in off defender Alexander Edler instead. “On the replay, we thought maybe he spun around and hit it,” Eberle said of the hope that Smyth would be credited with the goal. “We were hoping that it was his. We were trying to do everything we could to get the puck to the net for him so he could tip it. Weaver is down to his final few days as owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, a countdown that has been more bitter than sweet after 18 years, 352 games, six post-season appearances and few regrets. A former shoe salesman who worked his way up the corporate ladder and became so successful that he was able to bring an expansion team to Jacksonville in 1993, Weaver sold the franchise last month to Illinois businessman Shahid Khan for US$770 million. Khan officially takes over Jan. 4, meaning Weavers final game in charge will be Sundays season finale against Indianapolis. Hes leaving an exclusive club and taking plenty of memories with him. “Im at peace with where we are and Im looking forward to the next chapter,” Weaver told The Associated Press this week. “Who knows what Ill find to do. I know I wont sit home and twiddle my thumbs. I know that for sure.” The Jaguars will honour Weaver and his wife, Delores, at halftime of Sundays game. The ceremony will include a video montage covering nearly two decades, as well as the presentation of a banner signed by fans. “Every game is emotional for me, but this one will remind me of all the great things that have happened over the last 18 years,” said Weaver, who will turn 77 next month. “Its hard to walk away. But I never let the NFL define who I am. The Jaguars have missed the playoffs in 10 of the last 12 seasons, a drought that cost coaches Tom Coughlin and Jack Del Rio their jobs. Maybe Weavers biggest downfall was being too loyal. He kept former personnel chief James (Shack) Harris after he missed on first-round picks Byron Leftwich (2003), Reggie Williams (2004), Matt Jones (2005), Reggie Nelson (2007) and Derrick Harvey (2008). He also kept Del Rio after deciding to blow the roster up in 2009. “When I came into the National Football League, I was smart enough to know what I didnt know,” Weaver said. “I think that made me more patient in getting involved in the football side of the business than I should have been. I think I recognized things sooner than I made decisions to change them in terms of personnel. I think I was patient, too patient, and I take responsibility for that.” Weaver would have liked to have a few more years before walking away. But he had been looking for an exit strategy in recent years, and Khan seems to be a suitable successor. They have known each other for years, so familiar that the US$770 million agreement was initially drawn up on a cocktail napkin. It included a sale price of $660 million plus $110 million in debt. The final paperwork also included a stability agreement that essentially guarantees that the team will remain in Jacksonville for at least five years. NFL.com has reported that Khan would have to pay $25 million to a Jacksonville charity of Weavers choice if he moves the team within five years. The stability agreement coupled with the teams stadium lease and the NFLs hefty relocation fee make a move unrealistic — at least in the short term. The stadium lease runs through 2027 and would have to be bought out for the team to move. That would cost about $65 million right now. And the NFLs relocation fee could top $100 million. Regardless, Khan has insisted he has no plans to leave Jacksonville. “Were committed to this community and we are going to keep on carrying the work that was started here in perpetuity and hopefully move it up a notch,” Khan said. Weaver hopes for the same. Although he and Delores plan to travel more beginning next year, they are keeping a suite for home games and plan to attend as many as possible. NEW YORK — Nate (The Great) Marquardt says he failed his medical for a weekend UFC fight because of high testosterone levels. But the veteran mixed martial arts fighter says he was under doctors treatment for low testosterone and that he got off the medication in question when his testosterone numbers looked high going into Sundays main event in Pittsburgh. “At the end of the day he just didnt make the (permissible) number,” Marquardts manager, Lex McMahon told “The MMA Hour.” “He has nothing to hide,” he added. Marquardt, who was cut by the UFC after failing the medical, said he should have taken action to monitor his testosterone levels better. “I messed up. There are things I should have done,” said the emotional fighter who apologized to the fans. “I feel so bad for everyone. I hope they can forgive me,” he added. Marquardt said he went to the doctor last August after feeling sluggish, awful, and irritable. “I knew something was wrong. I felt like I was overtraining, when that wasnt the case.” The prognosis was a low testosterone level. “He recommended for me to go on hormone replacement therapy,” he told “The MMA Hour.” Marquardt said he told the UFC and started the treatment - even though he was hesitant. He fought Dan Miller in New Jersey in March after applying for a therapeutic use exemption, which state officials granted. But they asked him to take three more drug tests after going off treatment for eight weeks following the fight- to determine if the treatment was needed. A doctor then reviewed the results and confirmed the low testosterone levels, Marquardt said. He went on a more aggressive treatment three weeks ahead of the Story fight. Two weeks in, he took a blood test that showed high levels. His doctor told him to go off the treatment in the hope that the level would return to normal in time for the fight. “We knew that I had to be within range,” said Marquardt, calling it one of the most stressful weeks in his life. “Obviously I should have requested testing earlier. Thats one of the biggest mistakes I made.” Tests showed the levels were going down but a subsequent test weigh-in day Friday was above the range permitted by the state athletic commission, which suspended him. That immediately drew the ire of the UFC. “Not only is he out of this fight and out of the main event on (the card on) Versus, he will no longer be with the UFC,” UFC president Dana White said in a video posted on Twitter. He figures thats the best way to stay there, too. “You dont want to get too tentative or play away from shots,” Levin said. “If you want to play well and make birdies you cant do that, so Im just going to try and stay as aggressive as I can the next two days.” Levin holed out from a greenside bunker for eagle on the par-4 17th and shot an 8-under 63 on Friday to reach 14 under.
