Canadian pilot Justin Kripps and brakeman Bryan Barnett sit in fourth place Sunday following the first two runs of the mens two-man bobsled event, posting a combined time of one minute, 53:26 seconds. Kripps, of Summerland, B.C., and Edmontons Barnett used a terrific second run to move up two spots, putting the Canadian duo in medal contention with the final two runs set for Monday (11:15 a.m. ET, streaming live at cbc.ca/olympics). Russian pilot Alexander Zubkov and brakeman Alexey Voevoda lead the event after a two-run time of 1:52.82 seconds. Switzerlands Beat Hefti and Alex Baumann overtook Americans Steven Holcomb and Steven Langton for second with a combined time of 1:53.14. Holcomb and Langton are third at 1:53.18. The Canadians are pearking at an opportune time. They won their first career World Cup two-man event in January during the last event before the Sochi Olympics. Two other Canadian sleds finished in the top 10. Calgarys Chris Spring and Jesse Lumsden, of Burlington, Ont., currently hold the eighth spot with a combined time of 1:53.43. ADELBODEN, Switzerland - Marcel Hirscher mastered a classic Swiss slope yet again Sunday, winning a World Cup slalom to seize the lead in the overall and discipline standings. Hirscher, the Austrian two-time defending overall champion, sliced through the gates on a thrilling run down the steep final slope to beat Andre Myhrer of Sweden by 0.29 seconds. “Its maybe a stupid decision,” Hirscher said about his risk-taking. “If you give a lot, you can win a lot.” Teenager Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway was third, trailing 0.66 behind Hirschers combined two-run time of 1 minute, 49.75 seconds. Hirscher won this race for the past two years en route to taking the giant crystal globe as the worlds best Alpine skier. “Its very wonderful here,” Hirscher said of the historic venue which has featured since the World Cup started in 1967. “Its kind of a special race and its working pretty well for me.” Felix Neureuther of Germany lost his unbeaten record in 2014 by straddling a gate when poised to challenge Hirschers time. With 100 race points for victory, Hirscher now leads Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway by 23 points in the overall standings. Svindal is a speed specialist who skips slalom races. Ted Ligety of the United States retained a distant third place overall despite skiing out in the second run. Calgarys Brad Spence continued his comeback from injury with a 20th place finish. Hirscher also took the discipline standings lead from teammate Mario Matt who failed to finish the second run. He leads by 60 points from Mattias Hargin of Sweden, who placed fourth Sunday after being fastest in the morning. With his fourth win this season, the 24-year-old Hirscher has 22 career World Cup victories including 12 in slalom. Kristoffersen, a 19-year-old junior world champion in two events, got his second career podium finish one day after almost colliding with a television production worker who strayed on the course during Saturdays giant slalom won by Neureuther. “I skied over the back of his skis. I was definitely touching him a little bit there. (It) happens. Were only humans,” Kristoffersen said. Spence, who underwent knee surgery in the spring of 2012, started from 45th place and finished with a two-run combined time of 1:52.76. “My goal was a top-20 (finish),” he said. "I knew I could qualify with bib 45. It was just a matter of doing things right. Ive been training really well but on race day things werent coming together. “To have that first run and qualify and then an OK second run, its a good day.” Canadian alpine skiiers typically need two top-12 World Cup results to make the Olympic team, but with Spences injury status last season, a top-20 may be enough to earn him a spot. Bode Miller placed outside the top-30 in the morning Sunday so did not qualify for a second run. The American veteran, who won this race in 2002, lost his race line and speed at the top of the final pitch. David Chodounsky of the U.S. was eighth, 1.70 behind Hirscher, to follow his 10th place here one year ago. The host Switzerland team offered little for an enthusiastic crowd of 12,000 spectators on a sunny day with temperatures rising above 43 F (6 C). Only Markus Vogel advanced to the second run and placed 17th. “The crowd is one of the most fair on the World Cup tour,” said Hirscher, whose next race is next Sunday in slalom at nearby Wengen. The three-race Wengen meeting includes the Lauberhorn downhill Saturday that is the traditional highlight of the Swiss sporting year. What he would like to acquire is another veteran pitcher to add to a starting rotation that has a pair of aces at the top and then a handful of promising prospects behind them without much major league experience. “I dont suspect well make a major move but we hopefully will do a couple of things that will be tweaks that help the club certainly for this year,” Zduriencik said Thursday. How the rotation gets filled out will be one of the major questions when Seattle reports for spring training in the middle of February. Pitchers and catchers will be on the field Feb. 13 and the first full squad workout is Feb. 18. Seattle has the top of its rotation settled with former AL Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwkuama forming a formidable combo. But the bridge between that pair and some of the youngsters Seattle would like to see take the final spots in the rotation is the question. Asked if he was comfortable with how his rotation sits, Zduriencik said, “not tremendously.” “I think there is certainly potential there. There are some things that have to come together. When youre placing a lot of faith and trust in young kids that have very short windows of success, thats risky,” Zduriencik said. "I will say that theyre talented but how quickly they become legitimate major leaguers, is yet to be seen. There may be opportunities for us in the next period of time, few days or so, maybe well be able to add something to it.&quuot; Manager Lloyd McClendon said he would be disappointed if top prospect Taijuan Walker didnt make the rotation out of spring training, but hes expected to contend with James Paxton, Erasmo Ramirez and Brandon Maurer for one of those final spots.dddddddddddd There is not a higher-regarded prospect in the Mariners system than Walker. He was described by Zduriencik as the best athlete in the entire organization and he called his brief call-up at the end of last season “short and impressive.” Walker made three starts for Seattle last season, going 1-0 with a 3.40 ERA. He struck out 12 batters in 15 innings pitched in his major league debut. “Hes young, hes talented, hes got a ton of ability. He has to acclimate himself to being a big league starting pitcher,” Zduriencik said. “How quickly that comes, I dont know. Everybody is different.” Aside from the rotation, Seattle also has significant questions about how its outfield will shake out, specifically centre field. The Mariners are hopeful that newly acquired outfielders Logan Morrison and Corey Hart are healthy enough to be regulars at the corner outfield spots. That leaves centre field jumbled with Dustin Ackley, Michael Saunders and Franklin Gutierrez as options. “As we roll into spring training its all up to them,” Zduriencik said. “I cant tell you who the centre fielder is going to be. I can tell you who the candidates are. I cant tell you who the left fielder is going to be. I can tell you who the candidates are. … If were going to be a really good ball club, lets see what happens in spring training. Its up to them.” ’ ’ ’

MONTREAL — Two-time major champion Li Na pulled out of the Rogers Cup and the U.S. Open on Thursday because of a knee injury she said has bothered her for several months. The only tennis player from China to win a Grand Slam singles title also withdrew from next months hard-court tournament in Cincinnati. “I wanted to let all of my great fans know that unfortunately I am going to have to withdraw from the upcoming WTA events in Montreal and Cincinnati, as well as the US Open,” she said in a statement released by Tennis Canada. "Since March, I have been struggling with my knee and it is just not where I need it to be in order to play at the highest level. My medical team has advised me that I need to take some time off to rest my knee so it heals. “I look forward to getting back on the court this fall in Wuhan and Beijing.” Li played in the last four editions of the Rogers Cup. In 2012, she reached the final in Montreal before falling to Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic. As a result of the withdrawal, Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., becomes the fifth seed at the Aug. 1-10 tournament at Uniprix Stadium. Shell get a first-round bye along with the other top eight seeds. Also Thursday, tournament organizers announced that Yvonne Meusburger of Austria will miss the event and American players Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and Alison Riske will enter the main draw. The official draw will be held Friday and the qualification rounds begin Saturday. Li did not specify which knee was injured, but she played with her right knee taped up at Wimbledon, her most recent tournament. The U.S. Open begins Aug. 25. Li won the Australian Open in January for her second major title. She also won the 2011 French Open. In May, Li lost in the first round of the French Open, beaten by a player ranked 103rd. FLORENCE, Italy — Manuel Pasqual and Juan Cuadrado gave Fiorentina a 2-0 victory over Udinese on Tuesday and a place in the Italian Cup final after a 3-2 win on aggregate. Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Fiorentina levelled on aggregate in the 14th minute when Joaquin Sanchez Rodriguez headed back a long ball from David Pizarro and Pasqual smashed home an angled volley. Cuadrado scored the winner in the 61st, with a ferocious shot that clipped the underside of the crossbar. As Udinese chased an equalizer in stoppage time, there was a red card for Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, who was on the substitutes bench, and then another for Maurizio Domizzi. Thats when the eight-time champion revealed that a painful back is slowing his serves — and, all in all, giving him more trouble than his opponents so far. For now, leave the on-court theatrics to others. Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, for example, was clutching at aching hamstrings while being taken to 7-all in the fifth set by No. 28 Philipp Kohlschreiber before their third-round match was suspended for fading light. No. 23 Gael Monfils acknowledged tanking a set en route to a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 victory over No. 14 Fabio Fognini, who was docked a point for chucking his racket near a ball boy. “They make a good show for the crowd,” Nadal said. “Long match. Crowd involved. Good for tennis.” Well, aside from the fact that Monfils and Fognini combined for more than twice as many unforced errors, 137, as winners, 66. Nadals play was much, much cleaner: During the entire course of his 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 win against 65th-ranked Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, the No. 1-seeded Spaniard made 10 unforced errors — two in the first set, three in the second, five in the third. Hes dropped a total of 19 games through three matches. More worrisome would be his back, which also acted up in January during a loss to Stan Wawrinka in the Australian Open final. “During my career, I had (a) few problems. … Hopefully will not be (the) case” the rest of the way in Paris, Nadal said. Against Mayer, Nadal averaged only 102 mph (165 kph) on first serves, with a top speed of 114 mph (184 kph). That was down from an average of 111 mph (179 kph) and top of 122 mph (197 kph) in the first round last Monday. Through two matches, Nadal faced five break points and lost serve twice. He dealt with eight break points Saturday, losing two. The last time Nadal won 31 matches in a row in Paris, he failed to get No. 32, losing in the fourth round in 2009 to Robin Soderling — a defeat that later was blamed, in part, on injured knees. That remains the Spaniards lone setback in 63 matches at the tournament. Next for Nadal is 83rd-ranked Dusan Lajovic of Serbia, who beat Jack Sock of the United States 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.dddddddddddd Another American, Donald Young, lost in five sets to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, leaving No. 10 John Isner as the last U.S. man. Before this French Open, Lajovic had a 10-21 career record in tour-level matches, never winning two in a row. “I saw him play a few times on TV. Sure, its great to have new players on tour, young players on the tour that are coming strong. Hopefully not too strong,” Nadal said with a smile. “Well see on Monday. I hope to be ready.” Asked whether he would seek advice from another Serbian, No. 2 Novak Djokovic, before facing Nadal, Lajovic joked: “Yeah, I will try to ask everybody (for) some tips.” That wont help if Nadal produces shots of the sort he did when Mayer served at 5-all in the second set — a stretching, scooping backhand lob to break. As Mayer watched the shot sail overhead, he waved his left hand to signal to the ball to go out, then rolled his eyes when it curled in. Nadal pumped his fist, ahead 6-5 and on his way to reaching the fourth round for the 10th time in 10 French Opens. Monfils will take on Garcia-Lopez for a quarterfinal berth. Whoever emerges from Murray-Kohlschreiber meets the winner of another suspended match scheduled to resume Sunday: No. 24 Fernando Verdasco led No. 12 Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-2, 2-2. Womens fourth-round matchups set up Saturday were No. 4 Simona Halep against No. 15 Sloane Stephens, 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova against Lucie Safavora, 2012 runner-up Sara Errani against Jelena Jankovic, and Andrea Petkovic against 148th-ranked qualifier Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands. As the sun came out and the temperature topped 70 degrees (20 Celsius) after several days of overcast skies and occasional rain, Stephens eliminated No. 22 Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-3, 6-4, while Halep beat 55th-ranked Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor of Spain 6-3, 6-0. Halep is the highest seeded woman left, following losses by No. 1 Serena Williams, No. 2 Li Na and No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska. Said Halep: “Thats a surprise for everyone.” ’ ’ ’

SUNRISE, Fla. - Michael Yormark resigned as president and CEO of the Florida Panthers on Monday, taking a job with rap mogul Jay Zs Roc Nation and setting off a front-office shake-up for the long-struggling franchise. Yormark said he has accepted a job as president and chief of branding and strategy for Roc Nation, Jay Zs sports agency. The Panthers promoted Rory Babich into the jobs that Yormark had held with the organization, and announced that general manager Dale Tallon was having his responsibilities expanded to also include business operations. “While we are sorry to see Michael leave, he has received an offer for a tremendous opportunity and we are fortunate that we will be able to continue working with him in his new role,” said Panthers owner Vincent Viola, who bought the team in September. “Rory has been working with us throughout our acquisition of the team and has been partnering with Michael on the business side and Dale on the hockey side since he joined us.” Babich and Tallon also will be alternate governors for the team. “Dale and I, together, will be partnering on all aspects of our business,” Babich said. Yormark joined Sunrise Sports and Entertainment as its Chief Operating Officer in September 2003, was promoted to president in August 2007 and then to president and CEO of the team and SSE last September. Yormark said he still believes the Panthers, under Violas leadership, will get to the level the franchise has sought to reach for years. The Panthers have reached the playoffs only once since 2000, and are well out of post-season contention this year. “Roc Nation represents a wonderful new adventure for my family and me, and I am thrilled to join an exciting, innovative organization,” Yormark said in a statement released Monday afternoon. “Roc Nation is poised to grow in to one of the most influential companies in the industry and I am looking forward to taking on this new challenge.” Babich grew up in the New York area, the son of a sports writer, and said hes loved hockey since childhood. He joined the Panthers after Viola bought the team, and said his role as CEO will simply continue Violas vision to build a winner in South Florida. “Its an exciting time for us,” Tallon said. “Rory and I have been together since December. Weve developed a close relationship in a short period of time. … Were excited about what were going to do, how were going to do this and were going to work together to bring a Stanley Cup to the Panthers and their fans.” Roc Nation was founded in 2008, and represents major sports stars as Robinson Cano, Kevin Durant, Victor Cruz and others. "This new 12-year agreement with Bell Media represents one of the most wide-ranging and comprehensive deals in NHL history. “A long-term deal was personally important as it will allow us to work very closely with the Bell family to continually integrate emerging and evolving technologies so our fans receive a superior product for our regional television and radio broadcasts. This agreement is significant for the Senators, our fans and the future of our franchise.” Beginning next season, the agreement will see TSN and RDS each broadcast its slate of regular season and pre-season games in the Ottawa Senators designated broadcast region, which spans Eastern and Northern Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Canada, and Newfoundland. Details on the Frrench-language radio broadcasts will be announced in the coming weeks.dddddddddddd “This comprehensive partnership marks an exciting new chapter for the Ottawa Senators and all of their fans, as well as TSN, RDS, and Bell,” said Kevin Crull, President of Bell Media. “Leveraging the strength of world-class hockey production at TSN and RDS, as well as Bells extensive assets and reach, we are eager to amplify Ottawa Senators regional coverage to a whole new level.” Additionally, the Senators and Bell are strengthening their exclusive corporate telecommunications sponsorship over the long-term. It includes a broad variety of activations on all levels, including community engagement, in-arena promotions and branding, and retail support through The Source. Bell, an original partner of the Ottawa Senators, has a relationship with the team that dates back 22 seasons to when the team returned to the NHL – marking Bells longest relationship with an NHL franchise. The agreement features a number of future programs to enhance the fan experience, both inside and outside of Canadian Tire Centre. Details on these initiatives will be announced at a later date. Along with being the official regional television broadcast rights holders for the Ottawa Senators, Bell Media also holds long-term broadcast rights for the Toronto Maple Leafs (TSN and TSN Radio 1050), Winnipeg Jets (TSN and TSN Radio 1290), Montreal Canadiens (RDS and TSN Radio 690), Vancouver Canucks (TEAM 1040), along with all Hockey Canada games including the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, IIHF Hockey Championship and the IIHF World Womens Hockey Championship. ’ ’ ’

And it showed Thursday night. The Canadiens, playing in their second game in as many days, however, got a good performance in the end from their backup goaltender as he filled in for an injured Olympic gold medallist . Peter Budaj stopped all three shooters in the shootout and David Desharnais scored the only goal, leading the Canadiens to a wild 6-5 victory. “He battled back in the second and third and in the shootout he was outstanding,” Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said of Budaj. Budaj, in his second straight start for injured starter Carey Price, stopped Penguins shooters James Neal and Sidney Crosby before denying Evgeni Malkins slap shot for the win. Desharnais, the third shooter for Montreal, slammed on the brakes at the top of the crease before sliding the puck by Marc-Andre Fleury. “I would like to have some goals back, but we scored five goals against Pittsburgh,” Budaj said. “We have to learn from the mistakes we made. We have to keep going and getting better.” Daniel Briere scored twice, once on the power play, and Max Pacioretty also scored with the man advantage, his 27th of the year. Brendan Gallagher netted his 15th for the Canadiens and Alexei Emelin also scored his second of the season. Budaj, who stopped 27 shots, made his second straight start after turning aside 28 shots during an overtime loss one day earlier against Detroit. “You can tell the bench guys wanted to battle back for him because he certainly worked hard,” Therrien said. He filled in for Price, who was named the top goaltender at the Olympic games after going 5-0 with a 0.59 goals-against average and two shutouts, leading Team Canada to a gold medal. Price, who aggravated a lower-body injury sustained in Sochi, will be re-evaluated Friday. “Credit to the team because they stuck with it, they battled for me and we got the two points,” Budaj said. Crosby, who leads the NHHL with 80 points, scored his 29th and added an assist.dddddddddddd Neal scored his 21st for his 300th career point and also had an assist, while Malkin provided two assists, both extending six-game point streaks. Olli Maatta scored his seventh of the season on the power play and had an assist, while Brandon Sutter had a short-handed goal, his 10th of the year. Deryk Engelland also scored his career-high fifth goal. “We worked hard,” Crosby said. “It was a little sloppy, and a lot of special teams. … Probably a tough first one for everybody to get into.” The teams were tied at 3 after two periods and both scored twice in the third, sending the game to overtime. Three of the four third-period goals were scored by special teams units, Sutter giving the Penguins a 4-3 lead with a short-handed breakaway goal and Crosby later putting Pittsburgh ahead 5-4 on the power play. Emelin tied it 24 seconds after Sutter gave the Penguins the initial lead and Briere sent the game to overtime with his second goal of the game. With the Canadiens trailing, the Penguins Tanner Glass was issued a five-minute major for a hit on Emelin. The call was elbowing, but video replays showed Emelins stick came up and hit him in the head. “Thats why I kind of followed through the way I did, to get his stick away from my face,” Glass said. “Its a hockey play, it happens. I can understand why he made the call.” The Canadiens cashed in anyway, Briere tying it with his second of the game when he feathered a back-door rebound behind Fleury, who made 24 saves. OAKLAND, Calif. — Every facet of the silver and black came together one last time to honour Raider Nations late king, Al Davis. Fans decked out in spikes, war paint and bandannas. Former players and coaches gathered in suits and sweats. Rappers Ice Cube and MC Hammer stood along the sideline in traditional Raiders garb. All stood united at the Oakland Coliseum again in a 24-17 win over the Cleveland Browns to pay tribute to the owner with a simple two-letter message supplanted on the Raiders shield, spreading across helmets, shirts, posters, pins and programs: “AL.” “Were just delighted at the way everybody has come together to honour him. Whether to say he was a great man or wasnt a great man, the turnout says it all,” Davis older brother, Jerry, told The Associated Press. “While he might not have always looked it, Als mind was sharp right until the end.” The celebrations of Davis life were all over. The most poignant moment came during a halftime ceremony with dozens of former players standing in a circle around the Raiders emblem at midfield. Super Bowl-winning coach John Madden then lit a cauldron on the plaza level in the corner of the stadium with the public address announcer saying the fire will “burn forever” for fans to remember Davis. “I know hes looking down saying, Just win, baby,” Raiders coach Hue Jackson said, echoing the owners longtime motto. “Thats what we did.” A video presentation of Davis life began playing 20 minutes before kickoff and continued throughout the game against the Browns, the first at home since Davis died Oct. 8 of an undisclosed illness. A moment of silence was held before former Raiders offensive lineman Henry Lawrence sang the national anthem. Coaches, players and team employees wore T-shirts with “AL” inside the Raiders shield. Fans came with signs that read “R.I.P. AL” and “King AL.” Most simply carried handmade posters and ironed out shirts with the phrase, “Just Win, Baby.” “Its like losing a family member,” said a fan with six-inch spikes attached to his pads who wanted only to be identified by the name “Violator,” which was taped to the back of his black No. 57 jersey. Davis turned the Raiders into one of the leagues premier franchises with a “Commitment To Excellence.” The franchise won Super Bowls after the 1976, 1980 and 1983 seasons — the last one in Los Angeles, where the franchise moved in 1982 after protracted court fights before returning to the Bay Area in 1995. Past and present Raiders took flights from all over the country to stand along the sidelines in respect. Jim Plunkett, Jim Otto, Ted Hendricks, George Atkinson, Greg Biekert, Morris Bradshaw, Cliff Branch and Bill Romanowski were among those at the game. Madden watched from Davis suite. They told stories and recounted memories of the renegade owner who became one of the most important figures in pro football history, from his role in the development of the AFL, the merger with the NFL and the success he built on the field with the Raiders. “A lot of people knew him as an antagonist. But if you were a Raider, you were a Raider for life,” said Plunkett, a championship quarterback who played for the Raiders from 1978-86. “Al was unquestionably loyal.” He never backed down, either. That was most evident during the 1980s when he went to court — and won — for the right to move his team from Oakland to Los Angeles. Even after he moved the Raiders back to Oakland, he sued for US$1.2 billion to establish that he still owned the rights to the L.A. market. While some in Southern California and the Bay Area remain bitter about the moves, others never lost love for the Raiders because of what they — and Davis — stood for, not where they played. “I dont know if he would condone this, but to me, hes the original gangster,” said Ice Cube, a Los Angeles area native whose rap group “NWA” embraced the Raiders attitude and colours in the early 1990s. “He did it his way. I call him the Frank Sinatra of football. He really showed that you could be yourself and you still could be the best. You dont have to conform to be the best.” Ice Cube and MC Hammer also enjoyed hugs with each other before the game and with Jackson, CEO Amy Trask and Davis son, Mark, who is expected to run the franchise along with the late owners wife, Carol. “Al was like an uncle to many fans growing up,” said MC Hammer, an Oakland native. “Just had to show my respects.” People carrying flowers, flags, silver and black pompoms, jerseys, helmets and other cherished memories have stopped by Raiders headquarters since Davis died to pay tribute to the longtime owner. For others, Sunday was the first — and perhaps final time — to say goodbye. “He was a mans man,” said Hendricks, a Hall of Fame linebacker for the Raiders from 1975-83. “Its a sad day for Raider Nation. But the Raiders will live on. And so will Als memory.” . SUNRISE, Fla. - The Philadelphia Flyers are ready for the playoffs. Claude Giroux scored two goals and the Flyers clinched a Stanley Cup playoff berth by beating the Florida Panthers 5-2 on Tuesday. Tye McGinn, Sean Couturier and Vincent Lecavalier also scored for the Flyers and Steve Mason made 38 saves. The Flyers won their second consecutive game after losing the four previous games and after a 1-7 start to the season, making the playoffs is a big relief. “From the start we got, from the first (eight) games, weve got to be proud of what weve done,” Lecavalier said. “Obviously we have to finish strong and make sure that were ready and confident for that first round.” Jonathan Huberdeau and Erik Gudbranson scored goals for Florida and Dan Ellis stopped 22 shots. Ellis substituted for Roberto Luongo, a late scratch with an upper-body injury. After the game, Panthers coach Peter Horachek said Luongos injury was muscular soreness and not serious. The Panthers didnt go easily. Trailing 4-0, they scored two goals early in the third period to close to 4-2 and make the Flyers nervous. “We kind of took our foot off the gas,” Giroux said. “We only have three games to kind of work on our game and be ready for the playoffs.” The Flyers scored four goals in the second period, including three on their first four shots. The Flyers took a 1-0 lead when Lecavalier found a loose puck in the slot and wristed it between Ellis pads at 2:02 for his 20th goal of the season. The Flyers have seven 20-goal scorers. Philadelphia went ahead 2-0 when Giroux fired a shot from the top of the right circle that got cleanly by Ellis at 6:29. The Flyers stretched their lead to 3-0 a few minutes later on Girouxs second goal. Mark Streit dropped a pass to Giroux in the slot and his wrist shot beat Ellis at 8:50. “Just a couple of shots where I?was able to get open and shoot it on net,” Giroux said. “Obviously those goals were huge for us to get the lead.” Philadelphia went ahead 4-0 with 4:57 left in the second when Couturier wristed in a rebound from the right side. It was his first goal in 18 games. The Panthers have lost six of their past seven games and Ellis has lost all five starts with the Panthers since being acquired from Dallas on March 5. “It was a good start (in the first) but in the second period I just let in four bad goals,” Ellis said. “I take responsibility for that loss. … I cant let two pucks go right through me.” Gudbranson scored 1:14 into the third when he fired a shot from just inside the blue line that got past Mason to make the score 4-1. Huberdeau pulled the Panthers to 4-2 when he poked the puck between Masons pads at 5:38 of the third. It was the first goal for Huberdeau since Jan. 20 at Pittsburgh, a span of 19 games. “Obviously, we made it closer than it should have been,” said Flyers coach Craig Berube, who was happy the team clinched a spot in the playoffs. “They went through a lot and they battled hard all year. Theyre a good group of guys, good character, and they deserve a lot of credit for making the playoffs.” The Flyers made it 5-2 when McGinn took a pass from Lecavalier from behind the net and poked the puck past Ellis with 4:54 left in the third. NOTES: Flyers R Steve Downie returned to the lineup after missing eight games with an upper-body injury. … Huberdeau returned after missing 11 games with a lower-body injury. … The Panthers recalled centre Drew Shore from AHL San Antonio and reassigned forward Bobby Butler to the Rampage. Once the Pac-12 tournament got rolling, the Bruins took off. CLEVELAND — Mike Pettine got a second look from the Browns, who could be zeroing in on their next coach. Buffalos defensive co-ordinator had his second interview with Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner on Tuesday night, a person familiar with the Browns plans told The Associated Press. The meeting took place in Mobile, Ala., site of the Senior Bowl, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team is not commenting during its search. Pettine is the first candidate to meet twice with the Browns. He spent four hours with Haslam, Banner and other members of Clevelands front office but was not offered the job. Pettine had impressed the Browns during his first interview last week, and club officials flew to meet with him again — a strong sign of their interest. However, the person familiar with the teams plans said the Browns left Mobile and had another interview lined up for Wednesday. The Browns are in the fourth week of their search for their seventh full-time coach since 1999. Pettine just completed his first year with the Bills, and he improved the teams defence in every statistical category. Though the Bills still struggled against the run, they finished second in the NFL with a franchise-record 57 sacks. The 47-year-old Pettine spent four seasons as a defensive co-ordinator under Rex Ryan with the New York Jets before joining the Bills. Pettine also has worked as an assistant in Baltimore. Bills Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas hopes Pettine stays put. “Hey .Browns leave our DC alone,” Thomas posted on his Twitter account. Earlier, Adam Gase, Denvers highly regarded offensive co-ordinator, called Haslam and informed him he was withdrawing his name and would not interview after the Super Bowl. The 35-year-old Gase, who will lead the Broncos high-powered offence against Seattle, was the first candidate contacted by the Browns after they fired Rob Chudzinski following a 4-12 season. Gase declined an initial interview request because he wanted to concentrate on the playoffs, and the Browns would have had to wait until after Feb. 2 to speak with him. Haslam said last week the team is “preparedd to wait as long as necessary” to hire a coach, and the Browns quickly moved ahead without Gase, who enjoys his role with the Broncos and may not be ready for a head coaching gig.dddddddddddd The Browns are the only team without a head coach and have interviewed at least eight known candidates — the list is still growing — to become their fourth coach in the past six years. Besides Pettine, the team has set up a second interview with Seattle defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn. The 43-year-old Quinn, who presided over the NFLs top-rated defence this season, met with the Browns on Jan. 1. Per NFL rules, the Browns can conduct a second interview with Quinn by Sunday, but are not permitted to offer him a job until after the Seahawks season is over. Gase drew the Browns attention and soared up their wish list of candidates after helping quarterback Peyton Manning shatter several league records this season. Also, Haslam received a glowing recommendation on Gase from Manning, who has a long-standing relationship with the Haslam family because of their Tennessee ties. Gase, too, fit the outline — young, offensive-minded — of the type of coach Banner wanted to bring to the Browns, who have lost at least 11 games in each of the past six seasons. Gase is the second high-profile coach to remove his name from consideration. New England offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels also told the Browns he was not interested in pursuing their opening. The Browns also have interviewed former Tennessee coach Mike Munchak and Dallas special teams co-ordinator Rich Bisaccia, and both be brought back for second meetings. The team also plans to meet with Atlanta offensive co-ordinator Dirk Koetter. San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh said he has been contacted by the Browns about members of his staff. Cleveland may want to interview defensive line coach Jim Tomsula or offensive co-ordinator Greg Roman. Harbaugh would not confirm which coaches Cleveland asked about and was reluctant to offer much information. “To go into any further detail, I dont think helps our situation, their situation,” he said. “Their search is their search.” ’ ’ ’

MILWAUKEE — The NBAs board of governors unanimously approved the sale Thursday of the Milwaukee Bucks to New York investment firm executives Wesley Edens and Marc Lasry, bringing the forlorn franchise one step closer to starting a new era. Former U.S. senator Herb Kohl reached agreement with them last month for a price tag of about $550 million after they pledged to keep the team in Milwaukee. The NBA said Thursday in a statement that the transaction is expected to close shortly. The leagues expected approval comes days before the NBA holds its draft lottery. The Bucks, who had a league-worst 15 wins, have the best odds to get the No. 1 pick next week for Junes talent-rich draft. “The Bucks and their fans will benefit greatly from their vast business experience, energy and strong commitment to Milwaukee,” commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. Lasry and Edens committed to providing $100 million to help build a new arena. Kohl also announced he would donate $100 million for a new facility to replace the BMO Harris Bradley Center, the teams downtown home, which opened in 1988. Edens had said he hoped to get a plan completed for a new arena in a year, and have it built in a couple of years. He thought it might take about $400 million to build a new facility, though the new owners might face a tricky task in seeking public funding if they dont get more private help. Kohl bought the Bucks for $18 million in 1985. The Milwaukee native, whose family owned a chain of department stores, was hailed as a hometown hero. Silver praised Kohl for his “unprecedented and historic financial gift toward the construction of a new Milwaukee arena and for his outstanding service to the league and his community over his nearly 30-year tenure.” An injury-plagued season left the Bucks a franchise-worst 15-67. They have finished above .500 only three times since 2000, though Milwaukee did make the playoffs in 2012-13. The Bucks were swept in four games by Miami in the first round. With new owners and a 25 per cent chance to pick up the No. 1 pick in the draft, the Bucks face a defining off-season. Even if it doesnt win the lottery, Milwaukee cannot fall below the fourth pick in a draft stocked with top prospects, including Dukes Jabari Parker and Kansas Andrew Wiggins. A 2-0 victory Sunday over the Milwaukee Brewers allowed the New York Mets to head home after the All-Star break, happy with a 5-5 record on its grueling 10-game road trip. Duda hit a two-run homer and rookie Jacob deGrom pitched well into the seventh to allow the Mets to split a four-game series with the NL Central-leading Brewers. “Its huge for us,” manager Terry Collins said about going .500 on the swing that also took the Mets to San Diego and Seattle. “When you start the second half with a 10-day road trip and you play two teams that are fighting for the playoffs, its a big test and our guys rose and played very well.” With the non-waiver trade deadline looming Thursday, the Mets are five games under .500 overall at 50-55 and 6 1/2 games back in the wild card race. Duda sent an 0-2 slider in the sixth from rookie Jimmy Nelson (1-2) into the second deck above right field to break a scoreless pitchers duel. It was Dudas third homer in four days in Milwaukee. Overall, Duda finished with four homers and seven RBIs on the road. “Hes had a tremendous road trip,” Collins said. “Lets hope he remains hot.” The Brewers mounted a ninth-inning rally against Mejia with two outs after Jean Seguras single put runners on first and second. Mejia got Lyle Overbay to ground out for his 15th save. DeGrom (5-5) held the Brewers to four hits and two walks, exiting with one out in the seventh after allowing two singles. Reliever Vic Black got out of that jam. DeGrom had location and life on a fastball that peaked in the mid-90s, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. “We didnt square up many balls today,” said the skipper. The closest thing to a rally came in the ninth after Khris Davis reached first on an infield single with one out. The play stood following a replay review. Mejia got Mark Reynolds to strike out before Segura siingled to put the tying run on base.dddddddddddd After Overbay grounded out, Mejia savored the save with his animated celebration. The rookie starters matched scoreless innings early. Nelson allowed four doubles and got into a little trouble in missing high with his sinker, but finished with six strikeouts in seven innings. He was also helped by three double plays. But that one slider he left up to Duda proved to be the difference. At least Nelson got to smile after singling up the middle in the third for his first career hit in 66 at-bats as a professional, dating back to the minor leagues. “I think my thumbs are still in the batters box,” Nelson said. “Its been a while since I got one of those, about 10 years.” DeGrom won his fourth straight start, each time getting into the seventh. The most worrisome pitch for the righty came when Reynolds hit a towering fly ball to left that appeared to hit the heavy wires that support Miller Parks retractable roof. The ball caromed back into fair territory, and Davis, at first, was racing around third when he was held up after the umpires ruled the play foul. DeGrom then struck out Reynolds looking. The right-hander with curly brown hair flowing out from under his blue cap had hitters swinging through fastballs that peaked in the mid-90s. He finished with four strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 2.81. “Hes been very good. I guess he has to go out each time and prove it,” Collins said. “He was very good today.” NOTES: The Mets improved to 22-13 in day games. … 3B Aramis Ramirez, who was 2 for 24 on the seven-game homestand, had a day off before popping out in the seventh as a pinch hitter. … Manager Ron Roenicke indicated 2B Scooter Gennett could return to action full time when the Brewers open a three-game series Monday in Tampa … Bartolo Colon (9-8) starts when the Mets return to the Citi Field for the first time since the All-Star break to play the Phillies on Monday. … Kyle Lohse (11-4) opens the three-game series against the Rays for Milwaukee. ’ ’ ’

NEW YORK — Another win for the New York Knicks, in another game they mightve lost last month. Carmelo Anthony had 29 points and 16 rebounds, and the Knicks held the Phoenix Suns without a field goal in overtime to win 98-96 on Monday night for their fifth straight victory. Anthony scored four of the Knicks six points in the extra session, and New York allowed only four free throws while forcing the Suns to miss all seven shots. The Knicks pulled it out after their 14-point lead turned into a five-point deficit late in regulation. “I think now as a team, I think mentally were a different type of team,” Anthony said. “I think now were starting to believe that when we do get down, we still have a chance to win the basketball game.” Raymond Felton added 19 points for the Knicks (15-22), who climbed into a tie with Brooklyn for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Goran Dragic had 28 points and eight rebounds for the Suns, who dropped their third straight. Leandro Barbosa scored 21 in his best game since rejoining his old team on a 10-day contract. But the Suns endured dreadful games from starters Gerald Green (2 of 16) and Channing Frye (3 of 12), ending their road trip with a 1-4 record. “For the fifth game in seven nights against a team thats playing well, I thought they gave a heck of an effort,” Phoenix coach Jeff Hornacek said. “We didnt make shots. Dont know if its because its the end of the trip.” Playing their fourth straight game without Tyson Chandler because of bronchitis, the Knicks beat a Western Conference team at home for the first time in seven chances and improved to 7-12 overall at Madison Square Garden. Despite their miserable start to the season, they can continue climbing the rest of January, as they open an eight-game homestand on Friday. “The game is not over until the clock hits zero,” Knicks forward Kenyon Martin said. “We lost some close games early on, so (were) just learning from the mistakes that we made early, just trying to build on what weve been doing.” The Suns ran off nine straight points midway through the fourth quarter to open an 88-83 lead on Barbosas jumper with 4:50 remaining. The Knicks recovered to regain the lead on Feltons 3-pointer from the corner with 53 seconds to play, and after Gerald Green and Anthony traded misses, the Suns had one final chance. Though Martin appeared to have his hand on some of the ball, a foul was called and Barbosa sank both free throws with 1.2 seconds left. J.R. Smith, who beat the Suns on a jumper at the buzzer last season, was long on a chance to do it again. Martin found Anthony for a basket to open the scoring in overtime, then dunked a missed shot to make it 96-92. The Knicks could only manage Anthonys turnaround jumper with 2:41 remaining from there, but it didnt matter because the Suns couldnt get anything going. Phoenix compounded its problems when Frye made the second of two free throws with 2.5 seconds left, leaving the Suns down 98-96 without a timeout left and unable to get another possession. With Eric Bledsoe lost to right knee surgery, the Suns just didnt have enough to support Dragic, who had been starting alongside him. “Its a little bit harder now with Eric out. Its much easier when youre playing together and you have two ballhandlers. But it is what it is and I have to keep my head up,” Dragic said. The Knicks built a big early lead in the first half, when the highlight was when the Suns Markief Morris was ejected for picking up his second technical foul for shoving Smith after he was fouled. Because Morris was scheduled to shoot, the Knicks were allowed to pick someone off the Phoenix bench to do it. Coach Mike Woodson went all the way across midcourt to tab Slava Kravtsov, a second-year Ukranian centre who had attempted just six free throws all year, making three. With fans howling, Kravtsov went 1 for 2. But the Suns opened the third quarter with an 11-2 spurt to tie it at 54. The Knicks quickly regrouped and rebuilt a double-digit lead, and were ahead 75-68 heading to the fourth. Barbosa, the Sixth Man of the Year in Phoenix in 2007 who just returned to the NBA last week, scored eight straight Phoenix points to trim it to 78-76. The Suns eventually pulled ahead when Barbosa blew by his defender on consecutive trips for layups, one of them while getting fouled, to make it 84-83 with 5:51 to play. NOTES: Chandler worked out before the game and said he hopes to play Tuesday in Charlotte so he can get some minutes before facing Indiana centre Roy Hibbert on Thursday. … Anthony was the Eastern Conference player of the week last week. . – The Abbotsford Heat hope a last-minute goal keeps their season alive for more than one extra game.INDIANAPOLIS — For a half, Rudy Gay dominated Paul George. The way George had started the season, Gay knew better than to think it would last. George scored 17 of his 23 points in the third quarter and the Indiana Pacers beat the Toronto Raptors 91-84 Friday night to improve to 6-0 and match the best start in franchise history. George, who entered the day fourth in the league in scoring at 25.8 points per game, is a big reason. “Hes Paul,” Gay said. “Paul George is a great defender. Hes not just going to sit down and let people score on him. Everybody on our team expected him to warm up.” Gay scored a season-high 30 points on 12-of-26 shooting for the Raptors, but was held to 3-of-13 shooting after halftime. George bounced back from a five-point, 2-of-10 first half to completely change the tenor of the small forward matchup on both ends of the floor. Gays 22 points had carried Toronto to a 46-44 lead at intermission. “Thank God he just stopped making those contested shots,” George said. “It was frustrating because he was hitting some tough ones, but in this league, jump shots dont always last. So I was just trying to pressure up and contest all his shots.” Toronto lost its third straight to fall to 2-4. Amir Johnson added 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Raptors shot 39.5 per cent from the field, becoming the sixth consecutive opponent Indiana has held to 40 per cent shooting or worse. Roy Hibbert added a season-high 20 points and seven rebounds as the Pacers remained the NBAs lone undefeated team. “Everybody has to sacrifice something,” Hibbert said. “Its somebody different every night. I dont expect to have 20-point nights all the time.” The Pacers improved to 6-0 for the first time since the 1970-71, when the club played in the ABA. They rallied from a halftime deficit for the fifth time this season and overcame 16 turnovers to shoot 46.2 per cent. George made an arcing 3 over a leaping Landry Fields at the third-quarter buzzer and clinched his fists in celebration before sprinting to Indianas bench and slapping hands with teammates. George outscored the Raptors 17-13 in the period while shooting 5 of 9 from the field and making all five free throws. The Pacers led 72-59 entering the fourtth quarter.dddddddddddd While George had Hibberts scoring and 14 points from George Hill, Gay never received much support. His usual wingman, DeMar DeRozan, entered averaging 19.2 points per game but scored just six and missed 13 of 15 shots. “Its tough on the whole team when DeMar struggles,” Gay said. “I have to figure out how we can make us both comfortable at the same time.” George added eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. His sensational start to his fourth season had fans at Bankers Life Fieldhouse peppering him with the occasional “M-V-P” chant. Toronto used a 19-7 run over the final 5:17 of the first quarter to lead 32-22. The Raptors had success running with nine fast-break points in the period but produced just two more the rest of the game. “They stopped sending guys to the (offensive) boards,” said Raptors guard Kyle Lowry, who had 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. “They just let Roy and David (West) go to the boards so other guys could get back.” The Pacers limited transition opportunities and kept Toronto off the 3-point line in the second quarter to get back in the game. Orlando Johnson had five points and an assist in a 12-0 Pacers run early in the second quarter that tied it at 34. Hibberts fallaway 18-footer at the halftime buzzer completed a 5-2 spurt. Indiana started the second half on a 10-0 run and led by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter before finishing off its fourth home victory. NOTES: Hill returned after missing three games with a sore left hip. C.J. Watson scored 33 points in three games starting in Hills place. … Pacers forward Danny Granger, who has yet to play this season because of a strained left calf, may return to practice next week. … The Raptors won both visits to Bankers Life Fieldhouse last season. … Tyler Hansbrough, drafted by Indiana with the No. 13 pick in 2009, returned for the first time since signing with Toronto as a free agent in July. He entered to a mixed reaction in the first quarter and finished with four points and five rebounds in 19 minutes. . Pacers guard Lance Stephenson limped off the floor in the first minute of the second quarter with a sore left knee but returned to start the second half. ’ ’ ’

VAUGHAN, Ont. - Its been a roller-coaster summer for Canadian basketball star Andrew Wiggins, from that momentous night in June that had him bound for Cleveland as the No. 1 draft pick, to last weeks reports that Wiggins was on the move. On Monday, the 19-year-old was just happy to be shooting hoops at his old elementary school, deftly dancing around questions about his future. Hell be playing basketball somewhere this season, and he insists thats all that matters. “I dont worry about anything out of my control, I just know Ill be playing basketball in September,” he said. The basketball world has been abuzz about Wiggins and whose jersey hell be wearing come October. Numerous reports last week have Wiggins, fellow Canadian Anthony Bennett and a first-round pick headed to Minnesota for all-star forward Kevin Love. The deal cant be consummated until Aug. 23, when Wiggins is eligible to be traded. The Vaughan, Ont., native was at Glen Shields Public School to shoot a commercial for BioSteel, the Canadian sports drink company hes signed an endorsement deal with. A couple dozen journalists, including some 10 television cameras, turned up to talk to the most-hyped player in Canadian history. But Wiggins, speaking publicly for the first time since the reported trade was agreed to, had little to say about what his rookie NBA season might hold. After Wiggins attended Jayhawks coach Bill Selfs basketball camp Sunday, Self said Wiggins told him hed welcome the trade to Minnesota, where he could be the face of the franchise, rather than playing in the shadow of LeBron. “Even though in a weird way everybody would love the opportunity to play with LeBron because youre guaranteed winning, for the longevity of his career, he needs to develop that mindset to be the guy, for him to be great, and I think being Minnesota will help him do that,” Self said. When asked about Selfs comments, Wiggins would only say: “Anywhere, any team. I can play anywhere.” He was similarly brief in response to all answers about his NBA future. When asked whether he wants to be his teams star player he said: “Whatever happens is out of my control, Im not worrying about it right now, Im just here having fun.” When asked about his thoughts on a future with the Toronto Raptors: “The hometown love will always be there, no matter what, I try to do good for the city, the city tries to do good for me.” When someone pressed the issue, asking again if hed like to play for Toronto: “Um. . . I dont know. Only God knows. Thats too far ahead.” On where he sees himself in the next five or 10 years: “Whatever God wants. God has a plan for me.” The six-foot-eight Wiggins said hes tried to avoid the buzz going on around him, spending time with his family and enjoying the summer. He drowns out the noise by “listening to music, listening to my family.” He insisted hes had no trouble concentrating, saying: “Basketball is the love of my life, no matter what happens, Im always concentrating on basketball.” The six-foot-eight forward, who starred in his one season at Kansas, did admit life has changed a lot since the June 26 draft in Brooklyn, N.Y. “More eyes on me. More criticizing, stuff like that,” he said. “But going to Kansas University, that kind of prepared me for moments like this, because Kansas, they treat the basketball players like rock stars, so it kind of prepared me for this transition.” When asked if hell play with a chip on his shoulder, Wiggins said “I think every player, every competitor should play with a chip on their shoulder, no matter what, everyone has something to prove.” Including him? “Im a competitor, so, yeah.” Wiggins spent the day shooting a commercial with a group of young kids. They fed him alley-oops that he dunked with ease on the hoop that he knows so well. There were plenty of laughs and high-fives. “When I was playing basketball with the kids, I forgot it was a (commercial) shoot, I was just having fun with the kids playing basketball because it just brought back all these memories,” Wiggins said. His face lit up when asked about the chance to return to his roots. “It means a lot, coming back to my old stomping grounds, this is where it all started,” Wiggins said. "Growing up as a little kid, I was here every day after school, even coming before school, just playing basketball here with my friends. Its just good being back. “It just brings it all back, this is where it started, you can never forget where you came from. If it wasnt for this school right here, I dont know where Id be,” Wiggins added. “Growing up as a kid, even the teachers here changed my life, really.” While he was loving being back home, Wiggins wouldnt bite when asked about the upcoming mayoral vote in Toronto. When asked who hed vote for in the election that includes controversial candidate Rob Ford, who recently returned to work following a stint in rehab, Wiggins answered, with an awkward chuckle: “Not too sure.” . The Richmond, B.C., native added eight rebounds and was named the tournaments most valuable player as the top-seeded Ravens defended their 2011 championship. “The biggest thing is to win the whole thing as a team,” said Scrubb.NEW YORK — With a handful of boppers in their new-look lineup, these Miami Marlins are a legitimate comeback threat. Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered leading off the 10th inning, Giancarlo Stanton also went deep and Miami rallied from four runs down to beat the New York Mets 7-6 on Saturday night. Stanton hit a two-run shot and Miami climbed out of a 5-1 hole with a five-run sixth capped by pinch-hitter Reed Johnsons two-run double. Stantons seventh home run of the season gave him 29 RBIs, most in the majors. “There wasnt any point we thought we were out of this game,” Saltalamacchia said. “With our lineup, theres no doubt were going to put up runs.” Bobby Abreu hit his first major league homer since 2012 and Lucas Duda had a two-run single for the Mets, who had won three straight and five of six. New York was trying to move four games over .500 for the first time since July 14, 2012. Mike Dunn (2-3) struck out four in two hitless innings and Steve Cishek earned his fifth save, one night after coughing up a ninth-inning lead for his first blown save since June 4, 2013. Cishek had converted a team-record 33 straight chances before Friday. “These guys have a lot of fight in them. I wasnt worried that they were going to get down on themselves,” Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. “Definitely something to build off of tonight.” Saltalamacchia, who hit a tying homer Friday, sent a 2-2 pitch from Kyle Farnsworth (0-1) off a railing just above the left-centre fence. The ball caromed back onto the field and Saltalamacchia initially stopped at second base, but the umpires quickly waved him home without looking at a replay. “It was supposed to be a fastball away, came over the middle,” Farnsworth said. “If Im going to get beat, Im going to get beat with my best pitch and he put a good swing on it, went opposite field.” “Hes trying to do one thing — hit the ball out of the park. Im looking to be aggressive,” the reliever added. “Just one of those cases of old-fashioned hardball.” Miami is 2-9 on the road and 3-11 against NL East opponents. But the offence is certainly dangerous; the previously punchless Marlins began the day third in the NL in runs and batting average. Mets starter Jenrry Mejia, backed by two outstanding plays from shortstop Omar Quintanilla, took a 5-1 lead into the sixth, when the first tthree Marlins batters swung at the first pitch and hit the ball hard.dddddddddddd. “It caught me by surprise, thats for sure,” Mets catcher Travis dArnaud said. Marcell Ozuna doubled, Stanton homered to right-centre and Casey McGehee singled as rain began to fall. Two outs later, Adeiny Hechavarria chased Mejia with an RBI single. Johnson went after Carlos Torres first pitch and sliced a high fly that landed just fair in the right-field corner to give Miami a 6-5 advantage. “We saw what we can do in one inning. We have to keep that confidence up tomorrow,” Stanton said. Mejia was charged with six runs and eight hits. New York starters had gone straight 11 games without allowing more than three runs. Saltalamacchias passed ball and Hechavarrias throwing error from shortstop let the Mets tie it in the bottom half. Five hitters in New Yorks lineup entered batting .375 or better with at least one home run against Marlins starter Kevin Slowey. One of those was the 40-year-old Abreu, who made his second start for the Mets since getting called up Monday from Triple-A Las Vegas. Abreu, who didnt play in the majors last season, hit a two-run shot in the first inning to give New York a 3-0 lead. It was his first big league homer since Sept. 28, 2012, with the Los Angeles Dodgers against Colorado. “Feels good, man. A relief, Id say, after one year off,” Abreu said. Shoddy defence by the Marlins led to New Yorks first run, on David Wrights sacrifice fly. Derek Dietrich hit an RBI single in the second, snapping Mejias scoreless streak at a career-best 14 2-3 innings. NOTES: Sloweys previous outing at Citi Field was a memorable one. He struck out eight over seven shutout innings, setting club records for strikeouts and innings in a relief appearance, to earn the win in Miamis 20-inning victory last June 8. … New York native Tom Koehler (2-1, 2.13 ERA) faces Mets RHP Dillon Gee (1-1, 3.58 ERA) in the series finale Sunday. … Abreu is 8 for 20 (.400) with four home runs against Slowey. … Mets manager Terry Collins won a replay challenge in the top of the ninth after Christian Yelich was called safe at first on a bunt. The ruling was overturned following a review that lasted 2 minutes, 8 seconds. … Mets 2B Daniel Murphy was ejected by plate umpire Seth Buckminster for protesting a called third strike in the bottom of the 10th. ’ ’ ’

CHICAGO — Neither the brutal cold nor the leagues worst defence could stop Josh McCown and the Bears. Instead, Chicago jumped right back into the playoff race. McCown threw for a career-high four touchdowns, and the Bears scored on their first eight possessions to grab a share of the NFC North lead with a 45-28 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on a frigid Monday night. The Bears (7-6) retired Hall of Famer Mike Ditkas number at halftime and pulled even with Detroit in the division race on a night when the game-time temperature was in single digits and the wind chill factor was below zero. The loss left Dallas (7-6) a game behind Philadelphia in the NFC East and owner Jerry Jones calling for more aggressive play-calling on defence. The bone-chilling conditions didnt stop McCown from throwing for 348 yards or keep the Bears from running away with a lopsided victory. It was one they desperately needed after consecutive losses, and although Detroit holds the head-to-head sweep, the Bears are back in the thick of the playoff race. “All we could do is try to beat the Dallas Cowboys,” coach Marc Trestman said. “We kept it as simple as that. We didnt get into all the hypotheticals and all the things that go into winning or losing a game.” Alshon Jefferys leaping catch between two defenders in the corner of the end zone in the closing seconds of the second quarter gave the Bears a 24-14 lead, and they continued to pour it on in the second half after a gut-wrenching overtime loss at Minnesota last week. McCown, making his fourth straight start with Jay Cutler sidelined by a high left ankle sprain, became the first Bears quarterback to throw for 300 or more yards in three straight games. And for that, DeMarcus Ware blamed Dallas defence. “If you were back there quarterbacking and we played the way we played you probably would have five touchdowns,” he said. McCown, meanwhile, insisted hes still the backup. And Trestman said the plan with Cutler hasnt changed. “Well see where Jay is this week,” he said. “Hell have to be released by the doctors and when Jay is ready to play, hell be playing.” Brandon Marshall caught six passes for 100 yards, and Jeffery added 84 yards receiving after breaking his own team record the previous week with 249. Matt Forte chipped in with 102 yards rushing and 73 receiving, and the Bears racked up 490 yards in all. “Basically, we will have to make some adjustments in what we are doing defensively,” Jones said. “What that usually means is taking more risks on defence. But if youre going to have the kind of match like we had tonight or certainly in New Orleans you have to take some risks. We have to double up and Im sure that will be part of the plan on defence; more risks.” Tony Romo threw for three touchdowns but completed just 11 of 20 passes for 104 yards for Dallas. DeMarco Murray ran for 146 yards against the leagues worst run defence, but the Cowboys were overmatched after winning two straight. They also lost linebacker Sean Lee to another injury — this time a neck issue after making a tackle in the third quarter. He missed the previous two games with a hamstring problem. “Certainly, it was a disappointing loss and the loss stings,” coach Jason Garrett said. “The worst thing we can do is have a hangover after this loss.” The game-time temperature was 8 degrees with the wind chill at minus 9, but the freezing conditions did nothing to slow either team in the early going. Garrett said both teams handled it well. Murray burned Chicago for 52 yards on six carries on the games opening possession to set up a 2-yard scoring pass from Romo to Dez Bryant, but the Bears scored just about every time they got the ball. After Bryants TD, McCown tied it with a 4-yard pass to Earl Bennett and put Chicago ahead 14-7 early in the second quarter with a 7-yard scramble, leaping at the goal line and getting spun in midair. Jason Witten tied it at 14 when he dragged Major Wright across the goal line on a 10-yard touchdown catch, but the Bears grabbed a three-point lead on Robbie Goulds 27-yard field goal with 1:33 remaining in the half. Jeffery added to it with that neat catch after Dallas was forced to punt. “Im just trying to give him a chance to go up and make the play but not really put the ball in jeopardy, so to speak,” McCown said. “My part was relative easy to the catch.” NOTES: The record low temperature for a Bears home game is 2 degrees against Green Bay on Dec. 22, 2008. RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — A convicted match-fixer denied a report in a German magazine Tuesday that he predicted the result and details of a World Cup football match. Cameroons football federation said it was investigating the report in der Spiegel magazine that Wilson Raj Perumal accurately predicted in an online chat with one of its journalists that Cameroon would lose 4-0 to Croatia and would have a player sent off in the first half. And that is exactly what happened in the June 18 match. Cameroon midfielder Alex Song was sent off before halftime for striking Croatia striker Mario Mandzukic in the back. Der Spiegels claims rang alarm bells because Perumal is the best-known match-fixer in football. He was convicted of fixing matches in Finland and suspected of fixing other games in Africa and involving African teams. He also isnt averse to self-publicity, having recently published memoirs with two journalists as co-authors. Perumal denied having predicted the outcome. “The Facebook chat with the Der Spiegel journalist took place a few days after the match – June 21st, as confirmed by my Facebook log,” his statement said. “At no time did I make reference to four goals being scored or to a red card being issued. At no time did I suggest that I had any way of corroborating or substantiating what was meant to be an educated guess based on my extensive match-fixing experience. Last but not least: at no time was I informed by the Der Spiegel journalist that our chat was going to end up in the German publication.” “I am shocked and amazed that a respected magazine such as Der Spiegel would go so far as to fabricate statements by yours truly with the visible aim of stirring the row over match-fixing,” he said. “I apologize to the Cameroon FA and to its fans if I inadvertently offended them; it was not my intention.dddddddddddd I strongly believe that Der Spiegel should also do the same since they placed words in my mouth that I did not utter.” One of the Spiegel reporters involved, Rafael Buschmann, said the magazine stood by its story. “We firmly stand by our assertion that Mr Perumal wrote in a Facebook chat with der Spiegel some hours before the world cup match Croatia vs Camerooon, that the result of the match will be a 4-0-victory for Croatia and that a player of Cameroon will get a red card in the first halftime,” Buschmann said. Earlier, Cameroons football federation had said it instructed its ethics committee to open an investigation. The federation, Fecafoot, evoked the possibility that seven players on its team may have been corrupted. “Recent allegations of fraud around Cameroons three 2014 FIFA World Cup preliminary games, especially Cameroon vs. Croatia, as well as the existence of seven bad apples (in our national team) do not reflect the values and principles promoted by our administration in line with the FIFA Code of Conduct and the ethics of our nation,” Fecafoot said in the statement. “We are strongly committed to employ all means necessary to resolve this disruptive matter,” the federation said. FIFA President Sepp Blatter confirmed that a probe was underway, telling reporters: “Yes I have been told about this but let them do their work on this investigation.” That game was the low point of a disastrous World Cup for Cameroon, which conceded nine goals and scored just one in its three games. The Croatia match was also marred by an argument between Cameroon teammates Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Benjamin Moukandjo that ended with Assou-Ekotto head-butting his teammate. ’ ’ ’

SEOUL, South Korea — Neymar and Oscar scored either side of halftime to give Brazil a 2-0 win over South Korea in a friendly on Saturday. Neymar curled home a free kick from just outside the area to put the 2014 World Cup host ahead in the 44th minute. Three minutes after the break, a simple through pass from Paulinho freed Oscar and the Chelsea star rounded goalkeeper Jung Sung-ryong to extend Brazils lead. “While it was good to score from a free kick, I prefer to score from open play” Neymar said. “It was not an easy game and there were many tackles on me but when I got used to it, it was not a big problem.” The five-time world champion did not play at its best but took the chances that came its way in clinical fashion. “We played better than I expected,” said Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, referring to the lengthy trip to East Asia. “We overcame the situation well, started to play the way we wanted to play and picked up a good win against a strong team. Korea had us worried and was excellent in the final 20 minutes.” After a shaky start, South Korea exerted considerable pressure on the South Americans but struggled to create clear openings. “We can take confidence from this game,” said South Korea coach Hong Myong-bo, who was captain of the team that defeated Brazil in Seoul in 1999, the last Asian team to do so. “We made just two mistakes and lost the game,” Hong added. “The players did their best against a very good opponent and while I am sorry we did not win in front of a big crowd, we can build upon the performance.” Brazil continues its Asian tour on Tuesday by taking on Zambia in Beijing while South Korea, which has already qualified for the World Cup, hosts Mali. WASHINGTON — The Washington Nationals winning streak ended at a team record-tying 10 games Friday night when rookie Joe Panik hit his first major league home run and sent the San Francisco Giants to a 10-3 romp. Panik went 4 for 5 in his first four-hit game, highlighted by his three-run shot to centre field. Tim Hudson and four relievers quieted bats of the Nationals, who apparently dont have an inexhaustible supply of comeback wins and last-at-bat heroics. During their success streak, Washington had seven one-run victories, five come-from-behind wins and five walk-offs. Hudson (9-9) allowed one earned run over 5 1-3 innings for his first since win July 19. Javier Lopez, Jean Machi, Sergio Romo and Juan Gutierrez finished the job for the Giants, who have won six of eight. Doug Fister (12-4) threw six innings and uncharacteristically gave up a pair of homers — Nos. 12 and 13 allowed this season. The Nationals winning run had become suspense baseball theatre at its best, always with a happy ending for the team in red and white. The staff ERA over during the streak was 1.82, and there were regular Gatorade baths for the player who inevitably would get the game-ending hit. Manager Matt Williams found himself having to answer to a promise he made to a television network earlier this season about doing his famous Babe Ruth impersonation if his team won 10 in a row. He says hell do it eventually, but that the middle of a pennant race is not “the proper time.” Fister looked set to keep it going. He had a 1-0 lead and appeared in little danger when he retired the first two batters of the fourth. He then induced a chopper up the middle from Pablo Sandoval, but the ball bounced so high that it became an infield hit. That was enough to start the game-turning rally. Michael Morse followed with a single, and Panik put the next pitch just right of the 402-foot mark to give the Giants a 3-1 lead. Jayson Werths solo homer led off the fourth to cut the Nationals deficit to one, but Buster Posey matched him in the sixth to make it 4-2. Travis Ishikawa added insurance with a two-run double in the eighth, and the Giants pounded Ross Detwiler for four runs in the ninth. TRAINERS ROOM Giants: 1B Brandon Belt (concussion) was moved from the seven-day disabled list to the 15-day DL. He hasnt played since Aug. 6. Nationals: OF Nate McLouth had surgery on the torn labrum in his right shoulder. “It went fine and its all put back together,” Williams said. The Nationals expect McLouth recover in time for spring training. UP NEXT San Franciscos Tim Lincecum (10-8, 4.48 ERA) faces Jordan Zimmermann (8-5, 2.97) on Saturday in the second game of the three-game series. Yet there was little reason to celebrate Wednesday amid doubts about when or even if the remaining five venues will be ready in time for footballs showcase tournament in June. The Arena das Dunas in the northeastern city of Natal was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who took a symbolic first kick in front of a few thousand people. The event came a day after organizers admitted there is a serious risk the southern city of Curitiba might be dropped from the tournament because of lagging stadium construction. Brazils World Cup organizing committee admitted FIFA might have to consider reshuffling the tournaments matches, which would be an embarrassment for the country and disastrous for footballs governing body as more than 1 million game tickets have already been sold. “We know we had several warnings but it seems that these warnings were not taken seriously,” Jose Maria Marin, the committees president, told reporters. “Its a difficult situation.” Brazil promised to deliver all 12 World Cup stadiums by the end of 2013, but five are still under construction and at least two of those will not be ready until about two months before the tournaments June 12 start. One of those two is the Itaquerao stadium in Sao Paulo, which is supposed to host the World Cups opening match. In Natal, work was being done until the last minute before the inauguration of the Arena das Dunas, a 42,000-capacity stadium hosting four matches in the World Cups opening round — Mexico vs. Cameroon, Ghana vs. United States, Japan vs. Greece and Italy vs. Uruguay. The pace of stadium construction is likely to be on the agenda when Rousseff meets with FIFA President Sepp Blatter in Zurich on Thursday. The delay in building the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba is the biggest problem so far. FIFA and local organizers will make another evaluation there Feb. 18, but even if Curitiba is kept as a host city, the stadium isnt likely to be ready until a few weeks before the World Cup. “t;We cant believe in the worst.dddddddddddd. On the contrary, I believe that the governor, the mayor and the entrepreneurs responsible for the stadium in Curitiba will have it ready in time,” Rousseff said. “I have to bet in favour of that, not against.” The Itaquerao stadium in Sao Paulo is where two workers were killed late last year when a crane collapsed while hoisting a huge roofing structure. It isnt expected to be done until mid-April. Officials say the three other unfinished stadiums will be ready before then, but the timing remains unclear. Organizers were hoping to have the first match at the renovated Beira-Rio stadium in the southern city of Porto Alegre on Jan. 29, but civil defence officials monitoring construction said Wednesday there might not be enough time to get everything ready by then. The Arena Pantanal in the wetlands city of Cuiaba was listed as 90 per cent complete going into January. The Arena da Amazonia in the jungle city of Manaus, where a worker fell to his death from about 115 feet (35 metres) up in December, was about 95 per cent ready. There also have been problems at some of the stadiums already completed. The roof leaks at the stadium in the capital of Brasilia, and there are concerns about the condition of its playing field. On Wednesday, FIFA inspectors recommended officials reduce the number of matches scheduled there before the World Cup to preserve the grass. Also Wednesday, Brazilian authorities announced that the 12 host cities will have integrated command centres to provide security during the monthlong tournament. The estimated $14 billion that Brazil is spending to put on the World Cup has been one of the targets of anti-government protests that erupted last year, and several times demonstrators clashed with police trying to reach stadium sites. On Wednesday, during the inauguration ceremony for the Arena das Dunas, nearly 300 demonstrators gathered outside the stadium to protest the tournaments cost, local media reported. Globo TV said some protesters vandalized a car. Associated Press writer Marco Sibaja in Brasilia contributed to this report. ’ ’ ’

PHOENIX — The Arizona Cardinals have landed their top priority in free agency — a left tackle. A person with knowledge of the situation says the Cardinals and towering free agent Jared Veldheer have agreed on a five-year contract. The deal is worth $35 million, with $17 million guaranteed, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the agreement has not been officially announced. The contract includes another $2.5 million tied to playing time. The 6-foot-8, 320-pound lineman, entering his fifth NFL season, will be reunited with quarterback Carson Palmer. Veldheer blocked for Palmer when the two were together in Oakland. The deal first was reported by ESPN. Additionally, the Cardinals agreed to contracts with three of their free agents: a two-year deal for defensive end Frostee Rucker and one-year contracts for kicker Jay Feely and tight end Jake Ballard. The team also officially announced that left guard Daryn Colledge had been released. The Cardinals made left tackle their free agent priority in what looks to be a greatly revamped offensive line. Last season, the team traded left tackle Levi Brown — who since has been released - to the Pittsburgh Steelers and gave the job to inexperienced Bradley Sowell. He was adequate as the lines performance improved as the season wore on, but the Cardinals obviously didnt believe he was ready to take the job long-term. Veldheer, 26, missed the first 11 games last season with a torn triceps. He played in all 16 games in his first three seasons with Oakland. The Raiders chose him in the third round of the 2010 draft out of NCAA Division II Hillsdale College in Michigan. Oakland reportedly had considered using the franchise tag on Veldheer but instead chose to let him go. With the release of Colledge, the Cardinals could have two new guards. One of them, 2013 first-round draft pick Jonathan Cooper, missed all of last season with a broken leg. The leading candidate for the other guard spot is Earl Watford, a fourth-round draft pick last season. If Arizona doesnt re-sign free agent right tackle Eric Winston, the lone returnee on the offensive line would be centre Lyle Sendlein. 18:18ET 11-03-14 . – Adam Scott didnt have to look as far down the leaderboard to find players who suddenly are a real threat to win at Bay Hill. That wont change the 16-year-old New Zealanders approach Sunday at Desert Mountain. “Im just going to play my own game,” Ko said. “If somebody goes crazy low like shooting 10 under, 9 under or whatever, its not something I can control.” She shot a 5-under 67 on Saturday to reach 16-under 200. Jessica Korda and Mirim Lee were a stroke back, and a dozen players were within four shots on a course that gave up a 63 and two 64s in the third round. “Obviously, theres going to be some nerves,” Ko said. “Of course, thats always there.” Ko was 3 under on Wildfires Arnold Palmer-designed front nine Saturday after playing it in even par the first two days. She eagled the par-5 fifth after hitting a 5-wood to 7 feet. “I played much better on the front nine, so I was really happy with that,” Ko said. Ko tapped in for birdie on the par-5 15th after missing an eagle try and took the outright lead with a 10-footer on the par-3 17th. Shes 13 under on the Nick Faldo-designed back nine, where the tournament will be decided. “You never know until the last hole, last putt,” Ko said. Ko won the Canadian Womens Open as an amateur the last two years and took the Swinging Skirts World Ladies Masters in December in Thailand in her second start as a professional. She has five victories in pro events, also winning in Australia and New Zealand. “It would be pretty special and especially at the Founders Cup,” Ko said. “Without the founders, there would be no LPGA. This has been my dream tour.” Ko will play alongside Korda. They also played together in the first two rounds. “Its always cool to play with her,” Ko said. Korda, the winner in the season-opening event in the Bahamas, birdied the final two holes for her second bogey-free 66 in a row. “I look at her like a little sister,” Korda said about Ko. “Shes a great girl.” Lee, the leader after each of the first two rounds, bogeyed the 15th and shot 70. Im really excited for tomorrow.” Munoz, coming off a playoff loss to Paula Creamer three weeks ago in Singapore, shot 64 — one of 19 rounds of 67 or better in the 74-player field Saturday. Yang had a 67, and Ryu and Choi shot 68. Choi holed out from the fairway for eagle on the par-4 18th. Creamer had a 64 to match defending champion Stacy Lewis and Morgan Pressel at 12 under. Creamer played the first 15 holes in 9 under, then bogeyed the short par-4 16 after driving into a bunker. “I have hit the ball great this week,” Creamer said. “Ive given myself so many opportunities, its kind of ridiculous. I just didnt putt my best the last two days.” In Singapore, she holed a 75-foot eagle putt to beat Munoz on the second extra hole. Lewis and Pressel, 9 under after 11 holes Thursday, shot 67. “Pretty disappointing,” Lewis said. “I left a ton of shots out there today. The greens were a bit softer and I just didnt quite adjust to it. Speed was a little bit different.” Scottsdale resident Cristie Kerr matched the course record with a 63 to reach 11 under, finishing an hour before the leaders teed off. “I saw Cristie shot 9 under and Paula was 8 and I was like, Wow! Thats serious scoring,” Korda said. “But the greens are a little bit bouncier in the afternoon and you can kind of see where people have walked.” Kerr, playing a new set of irons this week, had an eagle, eight birdies and a three-putt bogey. “Im glad that I had the courage to switch because Im just so much more consistent now,” Kerr said. DENVER — Tyler Matzek was nervous and wild in his bullpen session before his first major league start. When he took the mound he was nearly unhittable. Matzek pitched two-hit ball for the first seven innings of his big league debut before faltering in the eighth, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Atlanta Braves 8-2 on Wednesday night. The left-hander retired the first 13 hitters and 21 of 23 before allowing three straight singles to start the eighth. His strong start to the game masked the jitters catcher Mike McKenry helped ease. “The first inning was really, really nervous,” Matzek said. “Mac was calming me down, telling me it was the same thing as Triple-A, just go out there and play your game. I let it be a positive thing, not a negative thing. If I try to fight it, it turns into a negative thing so I was just embracing it.” Matzek (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out seven in seven-plus innings. He also had his first hit and run scored. The Rockies had lost 11 of 12. He is the third Colorado pitcher in the last six days to make his debut and the first to get a win. “A masterful performance by Tyler. An explosive fastball and his slider looked like it disappeared,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. “He had it all working. He commanded it. Very impressive.” It was what the Rockies needed after they had lost 15 of 18. They broke out against Braves starter Julio Teheran, who had blanked them over six innings in Atlanta on May 25. Teheran (6-4) entered Wednesday with a 1.89 ERA, best in the majors, but Colorado scored three in the first on Drew Stubbs RBI double and Corey Dickersons two-run triple. Troy Tulowitzki and Justin Morneau had three hits each for Colorado. “It wasnt my day from the first inning,” Teheran said. “I didnt have a problem with the grip and with my pitches. I think I got my good stuff. A couple bloopers that happened and they got me on a couple base hits.” Matzek breezed through the first four innings on 39 pitches. Atlanta hit three balls hard, including a line drive by Teheran snared by Morneau to end the third. Morneau couldnt come down with Justin Uptons single with one out in the fifth to give the Braves their first baserunner. The Coors Field crowd acknowledged Matzeks early work with applause after Uptons hit. Chris Johnson followed with a single to right but Matzek retired the next two batters to get out of the inning. “He has good stuff, 94-95 mph fastball,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “The whole day youre talking to guys, Hey, this guy sprays it around a little bit. Be patient. Im not sure how many three-ball counts he got into, if any.” Matzek didnt walk a batter and threw 71 pitches through seven innings before the Braves got to him. Johnson, Tommy La Stella and Andrelton Simmons singled to start the eight and make it 8-1.Franklin Morales came on and gave up a two-out RBI single to B.J. Upton before getting Freddie Freeman to fly out. Matzek received another ovation as he walked to the dugout when Weiss pulled him in the eighth. “It felt amazing. Great fans, great fan base,” he said. The Rockies made it 4-0 in the third when Tulowitzki scored on a sacrifice fly by Stubbs. Josh Rutledge scored from third when Tulowitzki, who singled, was caught in a rundown between first and second in the fifth. Stubbs and Dickerson led off the sixth with consecutive doubles to give Colorado a 6-0 lead. Tulowitzki and Morneau had RBI singles in the seventh. Teheran allowed seven runs on 10 hits and struck out five in 6 1-3 innings. “I know it was a tough day for me. Im just glad that I was able to compete and get through six innings,” Teheran said. BOSTON — The Boston Bruins worked all season to get home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs. It vanished with a flick of Pavel Datsyuks wrist. Just like that, on Datsyuks goal with 3:01 left, the Detroit Red Wings got the upper hand with a 1-0 win in the opener of the best-of-seven playoff series Friday night. “We know were good enough,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said, “but its one thing to know youre good enough and another thing to show it.” The Bruins won the Presidents Trophy for the best record in the regular season — although they were 1-3 against the Red Wings - but were locked in a tight game in which neither team had many solid scoring opportunities. The eighth-seeded Red Wings made their last one count. “Its a good start,” Datsyuk said, “but we know there are many tough games (ahead).” Game 2 of the first playoff matchup between the Original Six teams in 57 years is set for Sunday in Boston. And Detroit doesnt have to win there again to advance. “Ill take home-ice advantage any time,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said, “but that doesnt mean you cant win on the road … which is what we have to do in this series if we plan on winning this.” Datsyuk, still not fully recovered from a knee injury, wasnt Detroits only late-game star. His goal came moments after a brilliant glove save by Jimmy Howard on Milan Lucics deflection in front of the net. “It was pretty lucky,” said Howard, who had 25 saves in his third career playoff shutout. Lucic “stuck his stick out and got a lot on it and it just sort of spun (off) my glove and I was just able to get enough of it.” The goal came when Datsyuk carried the puck from the right side to the left in Bostons zone while teammate Justin Abdelkader skated up the slot between Zdeno Chara and Dougie Hamilton. Both defencemen fell as Datsyuk put a 30-footer past goalie Tuukka Rasks left glove. “Abby did a great job, drove the middle, created space for him,” Babcock said. That may have distracted Rask. “You just try to get the puck in your eyes and I couldnt,” Rask said. “Usually, he tries to make a pass.” Puck handlers had very little space throughout the game. “Were going to have to expect that for the rest of the series and find ways to create some offence,” Bostons Patrice Bergeron said. The Bruins scored the third-most goals during the regular season and had just two regulation losses in their last 23 games. Fridays loss was their first playoff game since they dropped the deciding Game 6 of last seasons Stanley Cup final in Boston. They lost 3-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks after allowing the tying and winning goals in the last 76 seconds. Datsyuk, who missed 16 games with a knee injury before returning April 4, got his first playoff goal since Game 3 of Detroits second-round playoff series against Chicago last year. The Red Wings had a 3-1 lead in that series against the Blackhawks, and then lost three in a row. Boston had a decent scoring opportunity in the first minute of the third period when Brad Marchand stole the puck in the Detroit zone and fired a 20-footer from Howards right. But the goalie stopped the shot with his pad. The Red Wings had a better chance two minutes later when Rask made a save, and then stuck his right pad out to kick aside Darren Helms shot on the rebound. Boston played without four regulars, including defencemen Matt Bartkowski and Kevan Miller, both sidelined with the flu. Center Chris Kelly sat out with a back injury and left wing Daniel Paille had a head injury suffered in a collision in the next-to-last game of the regular season. For Detroit, centre Henrik Zetterberg has been out since Feb. 8 with a back condition that required surgery and defenceman Jonathan Ericsson hasnt played since March 14 because of a broken finger. PETERSBURG, Fla. – It took the Tampa Bay Rays 11 innings into the third game of the series to come through with a big hit against the Oakland Athletics. Sean Rodriguez hit a three-run home run with two out in the 11th Thursday to lift the Rays to a 5-2 victory that ended their four-game losing streak — and Oaklands five-game winning streak. “I wouldnt say it would have been the end of the world if wed have lost that one, but the morale would have been a little lower,” said Alex Cobb, who pitched 6 2-3 shutout innings in his first start since April 12. “It was a huge win for us. For Roddy to go off in that fashion and deliver that to us is a big boost that is very welcome.” Rodriguezs team-leading fifth homer came off Luke Gregerson after Desmond Jennings two-out single had tied it against Dan Otero (4-1). “It was obviously good to get a win after the fact that we were able to go that many innings with the pitchers throwing as well as they did,” Rodriguez said. Yeonis Cespedes sacrifice fly had given the As a 2-1 lead in the top of the 11th. Cespedes also drove in the first Oakland run with an RBI double in the ninth off Rays closer Grant Balfour. Josh Lueke (1-2) got the win after one inning of relief for the Rays, who had scored only four runs during their four-game losing streak. “It was great for our guys to do that,” said manager Joe Maddon. “We needed some kind of a boost all night and we were foiled in our attempts.” The Athletics lost for only the second time in 13 games. “Its always nice to win a series, but when youve won two and youre ahead, not being able to close it out is a little disappointing,” said As manager Bob Melvin. &“But you pick up and go on to tomorrow.dddddddddddd” Yunel Escobar drove in the Rays first run with a single in the seventh off Oakland starter Sonny Gray, who pitches eight innings and reduced his league-leading earned run average to 1.99. Cobb gave up three hits and two walks while striking out six after spending 35 days on the disabled list with a strained left oblique. The right-hander tied a franchise record with his third straight scoreless start. “It felt like for a while there might not be any runs scored,” Melvin said. “Youve just got to wait out the starting pitcher and try to get to the bullpen.” The Rays final out in the ninth came when Jennings was caught stealing. The original call of safe was overturned by a replay challenge that took two minutes and 13 seconds. DUBLIN, OHIO - The day didnt start off all that well for Graham DeLaet, but it sure had a fine finish. The Canadian and partner Aussie Jason Day captured the first point of the competition for the International side Thursday, earning a 1-up victory over Americans Brandt Snedeker and Hunter Mahan. It was one of two-and-a-half points the team from the rest of the world racked up after looking early on as if they were going to get slaughtered by their American competitors. DeLaet made his Presidents Cup debut by teeing up his ball on the first hole, only to be told the Americans were away. He sheepishly pulled his tee out and slinked back to watch Brandt Snedeker and Hunter Mahan hit their shots. Chalk some of that up to confusion from officials and some to nerves. In fact, a lot to nerves. “Ive never been so nervous in my life,” DeLaet admitted. “The only thing I can compare it to was when I was proposing to my wife.” When he did eventually strike his opening tee shot, it sailed smoothly down the hole and was followed by an iron to 12 feet, which he rolled in for a three and a 1-up lead. “I dont know how I was able to make a birdie,” stated DeLaet. “Because I could honestly barely feel my hands; my legs were shaking.” That lead was the only time Day and DeLaet were ahead on the front nine. In fact, it was the only time the entire International team was ahead for the first part of the day. As play unfolded, the Yanks seemed to make putt after putt and in the early going led all six matches. It appeared the rout was on. DeLaet and Day were caught in the U.S. thrasher. After that opening birdie, the American duo won four of the next five holes to go three up after six. The Internationals chipped away at the American lead, cutting it to 1-down but still looked far from comfortable. In fact, International captain Nice Price came out to walk a few holes in the match, saying later he wanted to try and dial down DeLaets emotional level because the Canadian was a little amped up. While Price was helping all he could, he got a big assist from Mother Nature, who decided to step in at that point. Just when it appeared things were getting out of hand, she dumped a storm on Dublin, Ohio – it seems to happen whenever theres a golf tournament here – and sent both teams scurrying to their rooms to regroup. Despite the dire situation, there was no rah-rah speech from the captain, no secret potions being quaffed. The message was all about biding their time. “Mostly Pricey just told us to stay patient,” DeLaet said of the rain delay conversation. “We were all playing well. The Americans were just making so many birdies. I think they told us theyd made 39 birdies before the delay. It wasnt that we were playing poorly but we just couldnt seem to get any momentum going.” That changed when the teams re-emerged for the second part of the day. After halving the first few post-break holes, DeLaet reached the green in two on that long par-5 15th, winning it with a birdie. On the par-3 16th, he hit his shot to a foot and the birdie was conceded for a 1-up lead. On the 17th, he had a five-footer to guarantee a half but missed the putt. When Snedeker made his birdie the teams were tied playing the final hole. After both Snedeker and Mahan missed the green, the International team had two putts for the win. DeLaet missed his 35-footer, but Day dropped his to ensure the victory. “Honestly I had a feeling he was going to make it,” said DeLaet, who jumped and then gave a vicious hand slap to his partner when the ball disappeared. “I dont even know what my reaction was or anything. I think I kind of blanked out there for about five seconds. Unbelieveable – my hand is still stinging from the high five.” “It was just a crazy day and I was super happy to get the win. We both played great – the Americans played great too. It was just a great match.” At the end of the day, the Internationals were trailing 3 ½ to 2 ½ but it was clear, after the early scare, the comeback was almost as good as winning the session. The International team sounded pleased, or perhaps relieved, not to have been wiped off the board. Now it needs to try and solve the mystery of alternate shot, a format that hasnt been kind to it. The last time the Rest of the World squad won a foursomes session was in 2005. DeLaet and Day will once again be the first team to try and figure things out when they lead off against Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley. The betting is this time, DeLaet wont put his tee in the ground until its his turn. . SAN CANDIDO, Italy – Canadian Dave Duncan is hitting his stride just in time for the Winter Olympics. Duncan of London, Ont., won his second skicross World Cup in as many days on Sunday, rocketing him to the top of the mens overall rankings and qualifying him for the Sochi Games in February. “From the outhouse to the penthouse,” said Duncan, who skied on the international circuit for five years before winning his first World Cup on Saturday. "Its pretty hard to sum up everything thats happened this weekend. Its an incredible feeling. “I know thats a troublesome word, but the truth of it is that describes how much this means to me to get that first win and not even have to wait 24 hours to get a second one. I mean, this is the stuff you dream of.” Duncan finished ahead of Austrias Andreas Matt and Germanys Daniel Bohnacker. Calgarys Brady Leman was fourth in the final after a mid-air collision knocked him off course. “In the final I was battling, trying to move up,” said Leman. “I was fourth for a bit, third for a bit, I was really battling with Andy Matt and in the end we kind of got tangled up and then I missed a gate and that was it.” In womens competition, Marielle Thompson of Whistler, B.C., finished second behind Switzerlands Katrin Mueller. German teammates Heidi Zacher and Anna Woerner were third and fourth, respectively. The silver medal kept Thompson atop the overall womens rankings. “Today was just awesome,” said Thompson. "I just won every start and really showed where my skiings at. Im really excited to have the leader bib back again. It just goes to show that all that training I did this summer is paying off. “Im just feeling really great.” Kelsey Serwa of Kelowna, B.C., won the small final, placing fifth overall. “Id much rather be in the final, but when I get in the small final I get all fired up and tell myself OK, this is my shot at the podium so youd better churn out a fifth-place finish,” said Serwa. Canadas skicross team made the podium fives times over the weekend, bumping several of its members into contention for spots at the Olympics. Duncan and Leman are guaranteed spots in the mens skicross event at Sochi, while Thompson is a lock for the women. Serwa will likely make it as a “Tier 2” skier, while Vancouvers Georgia Simmerling is “Tier 3” and considered very close to making the Olympics. Montreals Chris Del Bosco and Tristan Tafel of Canmore, Alta., havent yet made the minimum points to lock into Tier 3, although a World Cup podium finish would put either one into the second tier. “Training with the top guys in the world, it just creates an environment of excellence and I know that if Im able to beat (Leman) or (Del Bosco) in a training run you can feel pretty good leaving that camp, knowing that youre on pace to have a good year,” said Duncan. "I think theyll probably say the same thing about their training. “It just helps training with the guys that we do. We all push each other, we all cheer for each other, we all strive for the top. So well just keep on doing that and hopefully itll take us to some pretty cool results in Sochi.” . — Amid stories about Jeremy Lin and the upcoming all-star game, the Detroit Pistons have quietly become one of the hottest teams in the NBA. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - From the moment Phil Mickelson set foot at TPC Scottsdale early Thursday morning, it was clear that the back pain that sidelined him last weekend was gone. It also was quickly evident that his game was a little off. “My back is fine. My game was a little rusty,” Mickelson said after opening his Phoenix Open title defence with an even-par 71. After effortlessly hitting his opening drive 300 yards down the middle on the par-4 10th, Mickelson dumped a 90-yard wedge shot into the left greenside bunker. He blasted 10 feet past the hole and sighed in relief when his par putt slid in. A few minutes later on the par-3 12th, Mickelson found the water hazard along the right side of the green. His chip from the fringe stopped about 15 feet short and he two-putted for a double bogey. He three-putted twice, once for par and another for bogey. “I threw away a lot of shots,” Mickelson said. “I made some careless swings. Hitting it in the water on 12 was just pathetic.” He was seven strokes behind leaders Bubba Watson and Y.E. Yang. “I got off to a poor start, played a couple over, and finished poorly,” Mickelson said. “In the middle of the round, though, I hit a lot of good shots and had a good little run, but it just wasnt quite sharp. I wasnt quite focused on every shot the way I need to be and let way too many shots slide.” Mickelson first felt soreness in his back two weeks ago in Abu Dhabi, and pulled out of his hometown event in San Diego after making the 36-hole cut at Torrey Pines. He flew to Georgia to see back specialist Tom Boers and was told his facet joints locked up. “Its fine. Honestly, its no big deal,” Mickelson said. “It was a five-minute fix. I just have to be careful for a week or two as it heals up. Its fine. Mobility is back. Its just not a big deal. … It happens every now and then. Last time was about four years ago.” After the double bogey on 12, he rebounded with 20-foot birdie putts on the next two holes, but three-putted for par on the par-5 15th after hitting a hybrid pin-high from 245 yards. “Fifteen really stung,” Mickelson said. "It was only a 12 or 15-footer, and I am thinking eagle. I roll it 6 feet by and I miss it coming back. That was costly. Mickelson got to 3 under with birdies on Nos. 17, 1 and 4, then bogeyed three of his last five holes. He three-putteed the par-4 fifth — missing from 5 1/2 and 3 1/2 feet — and failed to get-up-down for par after finding greenside bunkers on Nos.dddddddddddd 7 and 9. “Playing the last five holes at 3 over … that was really bad,” Mickelson said. He hit five of 14 fairways, 11 greens in regulation and had 30 putts. “I wasnt as sharp as I need to be, for sure,” Mickelson said. In his victory last year, he opened with a 60 — lipping out a birdie putt on the final hole — and matched the tournament record at 28-under 256. The 43-year-old former Arizona State star is making his 25th appearance in the event that he also won in 1996 and 2005. “Its fun to be back here,” Mickelson said. “I love playing here.” Watson and Yang shot 64. Watson birdied four of the final six holes. The 2012 Masters champion had eight birdies and a bogey in the afternoon session. “This golf course, if your ball-striking is good, you can shoot some good numbers here,” Watson said after hitting 17 greens in regulation. “Hit a lot of greens, didnt make too many mistakes, didnt miss too many fairways. Just played solid.” Yang birdied the final two holes. The 2009 PGA winner also had eight birdies and a bogey, playing the back nine in 6-under 30 in his morning round. “I think you have to be aggressive,” the South Korean player said through a translator. “At the same time, you cant be too aggressive. … You have to really balance it out, but you still have to be a little bit more aggressive than other tournaments.” Scottsdale residents Pat Perez, Kevin Stadler and Matt Jones were a stroke back at 65 along with Harris English, William McGirt, Greg Chalmers and Chris Kirk. English birdied Nos. 12-15 to top the leaderboard at 8 under, but bogeyed the par-3 16th — the rowdy stadium hole — and the par-4 18th. He hit an 8-iron over the green on the 178-yard 16th. “I guess I was a little juiced up on that tee,” English said. “I left myself with an impossible up-and-down.” Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., fired a 4-under 67. David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., is another shot back at 68. Amateur Ki Taek Lee of Vancouver shot a 2-over 74. Mike Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., carded a 75, and Calgarys Stephen Ames had a 76.. The crowd was estimated at 88,113, a record for the first round. ’ ’ ’

The Lakers will also visit Cleveland and Philadelphia, have lost four in a row on the road and are 8-18 as the guest this season. They are 3-12 on the road against Western Conference opponents. Los Angeles is mired in a six-game slide overall and dropped a 110-100 decision to the Charlotte Bobcats the last time out on Friday, when Pau Gasol finished with 24 points and nine rebounds. Nick Young added 21 off the bench and Jodie Meeks scored 19 points for the Lakers, who are only 3-18 in the last 21 games and shot 38.7 percent from the floor. “They just werent ready to play for whatever reason,” said Los Angeles head coach Mike DAntoni. “Whether its the end of January, who knows, but its inexcusable.” As has been the case almost all season, injuries are the main story for the Lakers. Kobe Bryant (knee) wont travel with the team on this trip and it was announced Gasol (groin) would also stay in LA for rehab. However, there is some good news as all three injured point guards, Steve Nash, Steve Blake and Jordan Farmar, appear ready to return to the lineup. “Theyre all good,” DAntoni said. “I think theyre all ready to go. Theres a possibility all three could play (at Minnesota).” Lakers center Chris&nbssp;Kaman is probable Tuesday because of a sore knee and he has missed the previous seven games.dddddddddddd He might get the starting call with Gasol shelved, although Kaman has basically fallen out of the rotation. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves have dropped two in a row and three of five games, including Saturdays 120-113 setback at Atlanta. Kevin Love pumped in 43 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, while Kevin Martin and J.J. Barea added 17 and 12 points, respectively, for the Timberwolves, who finished shooting 44 percent from the field. Barea was ejected with 6:43 left in the fourth quarter after receiving his second technical foul. “I didnt even know I had it (43 points) until I think Martin told me after the game. I was just trying to get us back in the game by any means,” Love said. “Teammates set me up with a lot of good shots. A loss, especially right now, is tough.” Love has posted three straight double-doubles and nine in the last 10 games, posting an average of 25.3 points and 13.3 rebounds in that time. Minnesota has dropped 11 straight in Atlanta and will visit Oklahoma City and New Orleans after hosting the Lakers. The TWolves, who are 13-9 in the Twin Cities, have split two meetings with Los Angeles this season and will host the Lakers on March 28. The Lakers have won 26 of the last 28 matchups with Minnesota and are unbeaten in 11 straight and 12 of 13 contests at the Target Center. ’ ’ ’

(Sports Network) – The St. Louis Blues will try to rebound from a tough double-overtime loss in their playoff opener, as they host the seventh-seeded San Jose Sharks tonight in Game 2 of the Western Conference quarterfinals at Scottrade Center. You can watch the game live on TSN and TSN Mobile TV at 7pm et/4pm pt and join our Game Night Blog to get playoff updates. Martin Havlat scored 3:34 into the second overtime to give the Sharks a 3-2 win over the second-seeded Blues in Game 1 on Thursday. St. Louis certainly needs a bounce-back performance tonight or it could be down 2-0 when the series shifts to San Jose for Games 3 and 4. The Blues were 30-6-5 as the home team during the regular season and 19-16-6 as the guest. The Blues, who are in the playoffs for just the second time in the post- lockout era, enter this postseason coming off their first Central Division title since 2000. St. Louis is hoping to avoid its fate from 12 years ago, when it won the division and claimed the top seed in the West only to get bounced out in the first round by San Jose. In the second extra session, Sharks forward Ryane Clowe chipped a backhand pass from the near the left boards to the inside left circle where Havlat one- timed it home to give the Sharks the series lead. Havlat had two goals while Andrew Desjardins scored the other for the Sharks, who have made it to the conference finals in each of the past two seasons, but failed to reach the Stanley Cup Finals both times. Antti Niemi made 40 stops in Thursdays win. Desjardins goal tied the game with 5:16 left in the third period for San Jose. “A lot of us have been here before these past few years,” said San Jose head coach Todd McClellan. “Weve played overtime hockey in the playoffs and we kept calm. To me, thats a sign of veteran leadership.” Patrik Berglund scored both goals for the Blues, while Jaroslav Halak made 31 saves in the loss. “We were the ones who made a number of big errors tonight and it cost us,” said St. Louis head coach Ken Hitchcock. “Well take it hard tonight and get ready tomorrow and come back with a better effort on Saturday.” Hitchcock has opted to go with Halak at the start of this series and will stick with the netminder tonight. The Blues had the NHLs best goaltending tandem this season with both Halak and Brian Elliott generating buzz as possible Vezina Trophy candidates. “He was like our team,” Hitchcock said of Halak. “He had some real good moments and then some times, wed like him better. He was just like our team.” The Sharks were just 17-17-7 as the visiting team during the regular season and would like to take a 2-0 series lead with them back to Northern California. San Jose, which will host Game 3 on Monday, had a strong 26-12-3 record at home in 2011-12. The first time San Jose and the Blues met in the postseason was in 2000, when the Sharks upset St. Louis in seven games. The teams have split two playoff encounters since with San Jose also taking the most recent meeting during the 2004 conference quarterfinals. The announcement from Rutgers President Robert Barchi, who said there was a “miscommunication” about the speeches, is the latest development in a strange saga surrounding the May 18 ceremony. The New Jersey university initially announced that former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would give the keynote address, and school officials maintained that she would not be “disinvited” as some students and faculty protested her selection, including holding a sit-in last week. Charlotte outscored Cleveland 32-17 in the third quarter to go ahead 72-59 and pulled away.1) Play the first round as currently devised.2) Re-seed, according to regular-season points, the four first-round winners in each conference, and conduct the second round to create four Stanley Cup semi-finalists. Notice I didnt say four “conference winners”. Thats because the conferences cease to exist at this stage.3) The third round will feature Stanley Cup semi-final matchups that are determined, once again, by re-seeding the four remaining teams according to their regular-season points. Obviously, then, teams from different conferences could be playing each other in round three, and just as obviously, two teams from the same conference could be the semi-final winners.4) Voila! A Stanley Cup final that could bring together any two of the 30 NHL teams. The Stanley Cup final should be the NHLs best attraction. It has the built-in difficulty of June dates that make it too easy for hockey fans of 28 other teams to ignore the two that are still playing, especially when those two are not rivals in any other sense.dddddddddddd So forgive me when I say that Los Angeles/New Jersey (2012) and Anaheim/Ottawa (2007) and Carolina/Edmonton (2006) were not what wed call “marquee matchups”. Under a system that could put any two teams in the Stanley Cup final, such matchups could occur again. But they wouldnt occur as often if their odds of meeting were reduced by 50 per cent, and the introduction of odds allowing for an all-East or all-West Stanley Cup final would inject the playoffs with a difference that could be felt where it matters most—in the last series. If you like the idea, PASS IT ON! Meanwhile, heres David Bowie with “CHANGES”. ’ ’ ’
