MINSK, Belarus — Alex Ovechkin has been hospitalized with an apparent right leg injury suffered during Russias game with Germany at the world hockey championship Sunday. Coach Oleg Znarok would not reveal anything about Ovechkins injury other than to say he was taken to a local hospital. Znarok said information would be released later. “Of course its scary. We hope hes healthy and can play,” said former Winnipeg Jets forward Alex Burmistrov. Ovechkin took an open-ice hit from Marcus Kink that appeared to make contact with his right knee, then flipped over and remained on the ice. The Russian captain and Washington Capitals star was down for two minutes before needing to be helped off by teammates, putting no pressure on his right leg. Ovechkin was injured in the third period of Russias 3-0 victory and did not return. “I hope nothing is wrong with him. I hope he is fine. You never want to see that,” said German goaltender Philipp Grubauer, who is also a teammate of Ovechkin. “We need him in Washington. He had 51 goals this year, he is one of the best players in the world so we need him up in Washington.” There have been over 30 injuries at this tournament, but Ovechkins could turn out to be the most significant. Kink refused comment when asked his opinion of the hit. Montreal-born German coach Pat Cortina called it an “unfortunate incident” and added that Ovechkin was a “great ambassador” for the sport. The Washington Capitals issued the following statement on Sunday: “We are aware that Alex Ovechkin sustained an injury during todays game versus Germany. Our medical staff is working with Ovechkin and Team Russia to gather additional information at this time.” . – The Washington Wizards are in a great position to make the playoffs for the first time in six years, and John Wall has a lot to do with it. United when it travels to Columbus for a Major League Soccer clash with the Crew on Saturday. PHILADELPHIA — Spencer Hawes had the hot hand and Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown wasnt afraid to ride it. The 76ers centre hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left in regulation and scored 11 of his 25 points in the final two minutes of regulation and overtime Friday night to lead Philadelphia to a 115-107 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. The Sixers trailed 98-88 with 2:10 to play but forced the extra session with a 14-4 run that featured three 3-pointers from Hawes, the last one tying the game. Hawes ran to the sideline to catch an inbounds pass, turned, and while falling away from the basket, released his shot on one leg. “Coach drew it up in the huddle and it reminded me of the last time a coach drew up a 3 for me to tie a game,” Hawes said. “I was in college. I thought (Brown) screwed something up.” Evan Turner added 27 points in helping the 76ers snap a four-game skid. “I guess the basketball gods were looking out for us and Spencer played well all night,” said Turner who threw Hawes the inbounds pass. Hawes and Turner accounted for 19 of the Sixers final 22 points. Hawes added 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double in 14 games, and Turner was 8 for 12 from the field in the fourth quarter and overtime. “Spencer took us where we needed to go, and Evan took us home,” Brown said. Caron Butler scored 38 points for Milwaukee, which lost its seventh straight. Butler fell two points shy of his career high on 13-of-22 shooting from the floor. He was 4 of 8 from beyond the arc. His 3-pointer from the right corner with 27.8 left in the game looked as if it would end Milwaukees skid, the franchises longest since it lost eight in a row to close the 2007-2008 season. “Yeah, I thought the game was in our control,” Butler said. “But we havent developed a winning brand of basketball yet.” Only two Bucks finished in double figures. Ersan Ilyasova scored 19 points and Gary Neal had 10. The Sixers also dominated on the glass, outreboundinng the Bucks 50-32 and outscoring them 52-28 on points in the paint and 13-4 on second-chance opportunities.dddddddddddd Still, had Hawes not hit his improbable fall-away, the Bucks would have won. “That was a tough shot,” Butler said. “Hawes faded away, shot off one leg maybe, but it shouldnt have come to that. We had a lot of chances and all we needed was stops and rebounds.” The Sixers actually led by as many as 15 points in the second quarter, but the Bucks scored 23 of the final 31 points in the period to get within 55-53 at the break. At that point, the Sixers were led by rookie forward and Georgetown product Hollis Thompson, who had a team-high 10 points in the first half and finished with a career-high 16. Guards James Anderson and Michael-Carter Williams added 12 points apiece, and Carter-Williams fell two rebounds of a triple-double, recording 11 assists and eight boards. The Sixers shot a season-high 57 per cent from the field and led the Bucks in almost every offensive category, but forfeited their early lead and found themselves down by double-digits in the fourth quarter thanks to 26 turnovers that led to 28 Milwaukee points. “We were very lucky,” Brown said. Bucks coach Larry Drew couldnt say the same, but ended up sounding a lot like Butler. “Towards the end, we relaxed,” he said. "We didnt defend the 3-point line. James Anderson got away and hit one, and Hawes hit three of them. “It was a tough shot. It was a desperation shot. It shouldnt have gotten to that point. We had opportunities, we just didnt capitalize on them.” NOTES: Sixers second-year guard Tony Wroten left the game in the second half with a lower-back strain and did not return. … Forward Thaddeus Young missed his second straight game while on leave from the Sixers for personal reasons. … Bucks G Brandon Knight missed his fifth straight game with a hamstring injury. . The Sixers outscored the Bucks 13-5 in overtime and 27-9 over the final 7:08. ’ ’ ’

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Even coach Bruce Boudreau acknowledged the Anaheim Ducks played perhaps their most dynamic hockey of the season early in their 5-3 win over Carolina on Sunday night. The Hurricanes were suitably impressed, but they didnt stand a chance when the NHLs best were playing their best. Corey Perry had two goals and an assist in the first period, Andrew Cogliano scored a short-handed goal, and the Ducks jumped to an early 5-0 lead in their second straight victory out of the Olympic break. Frederik Andersen made 49 saves in his first action since Feb. 3 for the league-leading Ducks, who scored three times in an overwhelming first period filled with sharp passes, relentless skating and outstanding finishes. “We were as good as we can be,” said Boudreau, who won his 100th game in Anaheim. Francois Beauchemin and Jakob Silfverberg also scored as the Ducks won their NHL-best 43rd game and stayed five points ahead of Chicago and St. Louis in the overall league standings. Anaheim coasted late in its third consecutive win overall, giving Boudreau plenty of fuel for practice even while he complimented his team on its start. The first 30 minutes were a beauty: Perry got his 31st and 32nd goals during his sixth multigoal game of the season, while Cogliano set a new career high with the 19th goal of his breakout season. “If we play like that all the time, well be tough to beat for anybody,” Cogliano said. “I think we played really fast, moving the puck really well.” Andersen was solid while earning his sixth win in his last seven starts, but the Danish goalie could be headed back to the AHL after the game. Viktor Fasth, who has been out since Nov. 18 with muscle inflammation, is due to return to Anaheim as Jonas Hillers backup. “If we play like that, were as good as anyone,” Andersen said of the first period. “Weve just got to figure out a way to play like that for a whole game.” Alexander Semin, Andrej Sekera and Patrick Dwyer scored in Carolinas fifth straight loss overall and its fourth in six days since the break. Cam Ward stopped 29 shots in just his second start of 2014, and the Hurricanes followed up Saturdays 3-1 loss at Los Angeles with another disappointing effort. “You take the little positives that you can out of it,” Hurricanes defenceman John-Michael Liles said. “We did put a lot of shots at their goalie, and he made some good saves. Ultimately, getting down early against a good team is tough, and it was a tough battle to get back. But were moving the puck well and were getting opportunities. Thats the biggest thing. We just got snake-bit.” Indeed, Carolina put up 26 shots and scored twice in the third period, but went scoreless on six power plays to drop into an 0-for-21 slump. The Hurricanes conclude their five-game road trip out of the break Tuesday in San Jose. “Weve been pretty sound defensively,” Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. “We just havent been scoring goals. Tonight we made a couple of mistakes early in the first, and they capitalized. They have some good players.” Perry put the Ducks ahead 6:39 in, punching in a loose puck after the Canes defence came unglued during a shift by Anaheims dominant top line. Beauchemin scored later in the period on a slap shot that deflected off Jiri Tlustys stick, and Perry got his second goal 1:48 later with a nasty wrist shot. Cogliano scored during a horrible Carolina power play early in the second period, beating Ward between the goalies legs to set his new career high for goals with 20 games still to play. Shortly after Carolina got a bench minor for too many men on the ice during a power play, Silfverberg dug the puck off the netting and scored his first goal since Jan. 15. Carolina avoided the shutout late in the second period when Sekera scored in his second straight game. Dwyer added his first goal since Jan. 9 in the third period. NOTES: Semin returned from a one-game injury absence, but Carolina lost U.S. national team defenceman Justin Faulk to an upper-body injury early in the game. Muller had no update afterward. … Anaheim F Tim Jackman was scratched a day after signing a contract extension for next season. C Mathieu Perreault also was scratched after getting hurt in the third period Friday against St. Louis. … Cogliano has eight short-handed goals in his career and three this season. Hes not the first NHL free agent to do so, and the way the Wild have been progressing he probably wont be the last. Vanek agreed Tuesday to a three-year, $19.5 million contract, giving an improving lineup a potentially prolific scorer and allowing the Austrian-born left wing to settle in an area he has made his home since college. Two summers ago, the Wild turned heads by landing left wing Zach Parise and defenceman Ryan Suter. Now theyve added another top-market free agent in Vanek, whose 277 goals are the eighth-most in the NHL since his debut nine years ago. “What intrigued me the most was obviously with Zach signing here and Suter signing here, this team is getting really good and is very good,” Vanek said, adding: “Im extremely thrilled to be a part of the Wild and of a group like this.” According to a person with knowledge of the contract who spoke to on condition of anonymity because the team did not announce the value, Vanek will make $5.5 million this season, $6.5 million in 2014-15 and $7.5 million in 2015-16. Vanek lives with his family in Stillwater, an idyllic riverfront suburb a few miles from Xcel Energy Center. He played two seasons at the University of Minnesota before turning pro with Buffalo and called winning the national championship with the Gophers the “best thing” hes done in his hockey career. “To be a part of the Wild now and go after the big prize and having a chance to do it in Minnesota is beyond my wildest dreams,” Vanek said. Vanek was the fifth overall pick by the Sabres in 2003. He had two 40-goal seasons for them, but last fall he was traded to the New York Islanders, who later dealt him to Montreal. He totalled 27 goals over 78 games with the three teams. In the playoffs with the Canadiens, he had five goals and five assists in 17 games. Vaneks production slipped at times this season, and he was even benched briefly during the post-season, but the Wild werent deterred. “It certainly wasnt my best one I can tell you that. But Ill take the blame for that,” Vanek said. “Its not always easy moving around and being away from my family.” Vanek will play on either the first or secondd line, with some combination of Parise, Jason Pominville, Charlie Coyle, Mikko Koivu and Mikael Granlund likely filling the other top five forward spots.dddddddddddd Vaneks 113 power-play goals since his 2005-06 rookie season are the third-most in the NHL in that span. The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Vanek has the type of finishing ability around the net the Wild have lacked. “Theres no question that we do have some skill, but we dont score goals easily,” coach Mike Yeo said. Vanek turned down seven-year offers, including from the Islanders. When Pominville was traded to the Wild last year, Vanek was the one who encouraged his long-time Sabres teammate. “He loved Buffalo a lot, which I did too,” Vanek said. “But I told him, Youll like it there. Theres a lot of good fans. And after a week or so, he called me and said, You know what? Youre right. I do like it here a lot.” Unlike in the other major pro sports, Minnesota can be a destination market in the NHL because of its hockey roots. The addition of Parise and Suter and the Wilds advancement to the Western Conference semifinals this spring were further steps toward NHL prominence. “People recognize the talent that you have. So were getting better. Were in a good place,” general manager Chuck Fletcher said. Defenceman Clayton Stoner (Anaheim), left wing Matt Moulson (Buffalo) and centre Cody McCormick (Buffalo) departed the Wild as unrestricted free agents. Others in that category not expected back are left wing Dany Heatley and goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. Defenceman Nate Prosser could return for the right price. The Wild also signed defenceman Stu Bickel (one year) and centre Brett Sutter (two years) to two-way contracts, adding depth with players wholl likely bounce between AHL affiliate Iowa and the parent club. The 27-year-old Sutter, the son of Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles coach Darryl Sutter, has played in 54 career NHL games with Calgary and Carolina. Bickel, a native of Chanhassen who played one season for the Gophers, played in 67 games for the New York Rangers over a two-year span. He spent last season in the AHL. ___ AP Sports Writer John Wawrow in Buffalo, New York, contributed to this report. ’ ’ ’

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — Cathy King earned a rare Canadian curling triple crown Sunday afternoon. The Edmonton skip clinched the Canadian senior womens title with a 9-5 victory over Cathy Cunningham of St. Johns, N.L., at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre. In the process, King became the first female to win Canadian junior, womens and seniors championships. Canadian Curling Association officials confirmed that no other woman has achieved the same national honours. “It makes me feel so proud,” said King, 52. “It could have gone either way, that game, really, the way that both teams were playing. There were some key shots made and some key shots missed. Im just so happy we ended up on the right end of the winning stick there.” Kings victory enabled Alberta rinks to sweep their way to both the mens and womens seniors titles over their Newfoundland and Labrador counterparts. In the mens final, Rob Armitage guided his Red Deer foursome to a 5-2 victory over Glenn Goss of St. Johns. King won the Canadian womens championship, now known as the Scotties, under her former married name Borst in 1998, and claimed back-to-back national junior womens titles in 1977 and 1978. She plans to put her seniors gold medal alongside other honours that she has won over the years in a glass case at home. “Winning the Scotties has gotta be the ultimate, but this is really special,” said King. “We are a team that just got together this year. Im really proud of my team. A couple of them have never actually been to a Canadian championship before.” The winning rink included third Carolyn Morris, Lesley McEwan and Doreen Gores. The trio asked King to join them after their former skip retired following the 2011 season. King, who curled with a combined Edmonton-Calgary team last year, accepted because it meant less travel to practices and competitions. She locked up the win in the ninth end as a Cunningham miss enabled her to steal three. As a result, a close 6-5 contest was turned into the final margin of victory. “If she gets one there, its tied up going home,” said King. “Its anybodys game really. I was just mentally preparing myself for having to draw to the pin to win. Thankfully, I didnt have to do that.” “It was a good game up until the ninth end,” said Cunningham, 52. “I missed a shot in nine and that was the end of it.” King overcame a 5-4 deficit in the seventh end as she drew for two after Cunningham admittedly “over-curled” her last shot. The loss prevented Cunningham, a 13-time provincial champion with 12 in womens play and one at the senior level, from earning her first Canadian title in any age group. Cunningham was denied a Scotties title in 2003 when her rink fell in the final to Colleen Jones of Nova Scotia. The Newfoundland and Labrador skip earned revenge of sorts as she eliminated Jones in a semifinal here, but the national title remained elusive. “Im not sure Im still looking, but I dont have one,” said Cunningham, a travel agency manager, who plans to contemplate her curling future while weighing the time demands of her career and sport. Meanwhile, Armitages long quest for a Canadian crown finally ended. He never managed to make it out of his perennial powerhouse province in three decades at the mens level as repeat Alberta and Brier champs Kevin Martin and Randy Ferbey often prevailed. “Its nice to get them both done — win my first province, and within a month win a Canadian,” Armitage said. None of his rink mates — third Keith Glover, second Randy Ponich or Wilf Edgar — had won at the national junior, mens or senior mens levels either. Suffice to say the moment was not lost on Armitage, who lists his occupation with a contracting company as “jack of all trades.” “It means everything,” said Armitage. “I worked on a (livestock) feedlot for 25 years (and) I didnt get married until I was 35, because every day I took off I went curling. I booked all of my holidays to go around curling. … Ive put in a lot of time at this game. I had bad knees, and then I couldnt practise — but stuck with it anyway. Its really gratifying.” It was a tough afternoon for the Cunningham family as the mens and womens finals were held at the same time on ice sheets next to each other. While Cathy surrendered the womens title, her husband Geoff missed out on a mens championship. Geoff Cunningham threw skip stones for the Goss rink. The turning point came in the sixth end as Geoff Cunningham tried to reduce his squads 3-1 deficit, but missed on a run-back attempt with the hammer. Armitage stole two and never looked back. Like his wife, Geoff is still waiting for his first Canadian title after reaching a national final for the first time since he was a junior runner-up in 1979. But he was still pleased to contend in such a tough field. “Im probably more disappointed for the girls, to see their result today,” said Geoff Cunningham. “That was a little harder to take.” . The league announced the decision on its website Saturday, shortly before AC Milan was due to kick off against Genoa at 6 p.m. local time. The fourth-seeded Chinese star beat Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at Rod Laver Arena to capture her first Australian Open title on Saturday. Li played in her third final in four years at Melbourne Park. She lost to Kim Clijsters in 2011 and Victoria Azarenka last year before finally breaking through at the seasons first Grand Slam event against the 20th-seeded Cibulkova. “After I win the match, I really, really exciting,” Li said. “I think I have drops still coming down, you know. I try to have hug with the team, but is too high. I cannot catch it (laughter).” Her win came at the end of a fortnight featuring an array of surprising results on the womens side. It was the first time since 1997 that none of the top three seeds made the semifinals. Li committed 25 of her 30 unforced errors in a competitive opening set before she unexpectedly breezed through the second. She had a 34-11 advantage in winners, many coming on her lethal backhand, and converted half of her 10 break-point chances. The second double fault by Cibulkova in the matchs opening game gave Li an early break. A double fault then hurt Li as Cibulkova gained a break to level the first set at 3-all. Li earned a break point with a strong backhand winner in the ninth game, but two of her forehands flew long and Cibulkova was able to hold for a 5-4 lead. After closing out a relative easy service game with an ace to extend the set, Li earned two break points when she followed up Cibulkovas sixth double fault with a blistering ccrosscourt backhand.dddddddddddd Cibulkova then netted a backhand to give Li a 6-5 lead before she broke back to force a tiebreak. Li raced out to a commanding 5-1 lead in the tiebreak and she later claimed the 70-minute first set when Cibulkova dumped a backhand into the net. The second set lasted only 27 minutes and ended with Cibulkova sending a ground stroke long. “You know, it was my first Grand Slam finals and Im just proud with the way I handle it,” Cibulkova said. “You know, I just went on the court. I wanted to play my best tennis. It wasnt easy against her because she was playing extremely well. So Im quite happy.” Li, who turns 32 next month, captured her second Grand Slam title, adding to her victory at the 2011 French Open, and improved to 9-11 in career finals. She also is just the fourth woman to win the Aussie Open crown after saving a match point. She fought off the match point in the third round against Lucie Safarova and joined Monica Seles (1991), Jennifer Capriati (2002) and Serena Williams (2003 and 2005) to accomplish the feat. “Yeah, start of tournament everybody talking about the age,” Li said. “I would like to say age is nothing. Still can win the Grand Slam. So pretty happy about my age. I got more experience on the court.” Cibulkova, who stands just 5-foot-3, knocked off No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova in the fourth round and No. 5 seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinals to become Slovakias first Grand Slam finalist. The 24-year-old fell to 3-6 in her career title tilts and 0-5 against Li. ’ ’ ’

Bobby Parnell got four outs and Jon Rauch pitched the ninth. “I thought the ball was coming out of my hand well,” Niese said. “In this ballpark, you have to focus on keeping the ball down. The all-around feel of my mechanics was good.” The five-time defending NL East champion Phillies are 3-5 and struggling offensively without All-Stars Chase Utley and Ryan Howard in the middle of their lineup. Theyve scored two runs or less in five of their eight games. “Were eight games in, it doesnt faze me at all,” manager Charlie Manuel said. “I hate to use the word early because I come to the ballpark every day and I want to win, but theres no sense in panicking. Were going to score runs, were going to compete, were going to hold the fort until our guys get back.” Phillies starter Vance Worley (0-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings. Wright hurt his finger diving back to a base Monday night. He finally felt well enough to return on Saturday, and made an impact right away. “When a guy like David Wright goes out and playys with a broken finger, the other guys dont hurt as bad,” Mets manager Terry Collins said.dddddddddddd “His presence in our lineup means a lot.” Worley retired the first two batters before Wright drove one out to almost straightaway centre to give the Mets the lead in the first. “It was supposed to be a fastball away and it ran right back over the plate,” Worley said. The Mets tacked on three runs in the fourth. They loaded the bases with no outs on a walk and singles by Wright and Ike Davis, who was 1 for 24 to that point. One run scored when Jason Bay grounded into a double play. Duda then ripped a two-run shot to right, snapping an 0-for-15 slump with his third homer. Mets centre fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis robbed Brian Schneider of extra bases and an RBI with a sensational running catch on a drive to the warning track to end the second inning. The crowd of 45,750 was the 225th straight sellout at Citizens Bank Park, including post-season play. There were blue-shirted Mets fans mixed in, of course. The loudest cheers from home fans came when a New York fan was ejected from the ballpark in the ninth. NOTES: Manuel was honoured before the game for being the winningest manager in franchise history. Manuel moved into first place on the teams list with his 646th victory on the final day of the regular season last year. … Schneider caught Worley for the 13th consecutive start. The last time Worley didnt pitch to Schneider was last July 15 at Citi Field. … Wright has an eight-game hitting streak. … Wrights 16 homers at Citizens Bank Park are the most by a visiting player. … LHP Cole Hamels (0-1) goes for the Phillies against RHP Mike Pelfrey in the series finale Sunday. Hamels is 3-10 with a 4.46 ERA in 17 career starts vs. the Mets. Pelfrey is 7-7 with a 5.37 ERA in 19 starts against the Phillies. ’ ’ ’

SANDY, Utah — Alvaro Saborio and Joao Plata each scored in the second half to help Real Salt Lake overcome a slow start to earn a 2-1 victory over Chivas USA on Wednesday night. Real Salt Lake (16-10-8) clinched a top-two seed heading into the MLS playoffs. RSL can clinch the top seed in the west if Chivas beats or draws Portland on Saturday. Chivas (6-19-8) threatened a late rally after a goal from reserve forward Julio Morales in the 77th minute, but the Goats couldnt bridge the gap and fell to RSL for the third time this season. RSL got on board in the 49th minute when Saborio slotted a penalty kick inside the right post. Salt Lake took a two-goal lead in the 52nd minute on Platas goal. After a failed attack by Javier Morales, Plata collected the ball outside the 18-yard box and fired it down the middle, burying a low shot inside the left post. “We know that weve been struggling to score goals lately and I think its one of those situations where one comes, its going to be coming in bunches,” Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis said. “If you look at that game, we should have probably scored three at least, maybe four goals. On a different night we put those away and make the game easy for ourselves.” Morales scored when he got behind Tony Beltran and latched onto a long cross from Carlo Chueca. Morales drew goalie Nick Rimando off his line and slipped the ball past his left side for the goal. “The players were respecting the opponent, but they didnt stop fighting,” Chivas coach Jose Luis Real said. “We had very good possession against a very good team and the fight the guys put on the field was very remarkable.” Salt Lake controlled possession throughout the first half as Chivas USA packed the box on the defensive end to keep RSL off the scoreboard. It resulted in plenty of scoring opportunities for the home team before halftime - none of which RSL could finish. Kyle Beckerman bent a free kick on the frame to force a corner kick in the 22nd minute. Beckerman played it as a short corner and worked the ball into the middle of the box. Yordany Alvarez headed a point-blank shot down the middle, but Chivas goalkeeper Tim Melia defended it perfectly. Beckerman crossed the ball into the centre of the box again in the 28th minute. This time, Saborio got a head on the ball and put it right on frame. But Melia dove low to his right and wrapped up the ball. “I feel like every team comes here and they try to sit back,” Javier Morales said. “We have to be smart and we have to be patient.” .” – Mark Bloom (@markbloom21), on Twitter That one sentence sums it up, while at the same time, leaving so much out. The sophomore forward had 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to help the 23rd-ranked Sooners defeat No. 8 Oklahoma State 88-76 on Monday night. Spangler, in his first season playing for Oklahoma after transferring from Gonzaga, has displayed an energy level that has helped change the Sooners from a team that could just score a lot of points into one that held Oklahoma State to 40 per cent shooting. “Ryans kind of been the cornerstone for our growth in the toughness area,” Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. “I think were getting tougher. I think weve made big strides in that area.” It was the first time both teams have entered a “Bedlam” rivalry game ranked since 2005. The Sooners got great efforts from a few unexpected sources. Freshman Jordan Woodard scored 17 of his 18 points in the second half and reserve Tyler Neal added a season-high 15 points for the Sooners (17-4, 6-2 Big 12), who won their fourth straight game and claimed their third win over a ranked conference opponent this season. Woodard averaged just 11 points a game and Neal averaged 5.9 coming into the game. “Thats kind of been the trademark of this team all year long — different guys, different nights, stepping up and giving us great support,” Kruger said. “We beat a great Oklahoma State team. That makes it even more satisfying.” Oklahoma shot 46 per cent from the field and made 8 of 17 3-pointers. The Cowboys committed 29 fouls and were outscored 30-15 at the free throw line. Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said the poor defence and the foul trouble were related. “We didnt defend very much,” he said. “When you dont defend, you put yourself in position to foul. Give them credit. They beat us off the dribble. Fouling is usually a product of being out of position.” Oklahoma State guard Phil Forte said the team has to handle situations like Mondays better. &“We need to quit worrying about the refs and all that and just play,” he said.dddddddddddd “Move onto the next play. Thats the most important thing.” Marcus Smart had 22 points on 6-of-18 shooting and spent much of the game in foul trouble. Forte scored 20 points and made all six of his 3-point tries and Markel Brown added 18 points for the Cowboys (16-4, 4-3). OSUs LeBryan Nash, who scored a career-high 29 points against West Virginia on Saturday, fouled out with eight points in 17 minutes. Oklahoma dominated early as Oklahoma States Smart, Nash and Stevie Clark all committed two fouls in the first 12 minutes. Forte gave the Cowboys some life with two deep 3-pointers in a run that trimmed Oklahomas lead to 32-26. The Sooners extended it to 46-36 on a 3-pointer by Neal with 46 seconds left in the first half, and the Sooners led 46-38 at the break. Neal scored 10 in the first half. Smart played just 6 minutes in the first half and had six points on 2-for-4 shooting. Woodard drained a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to push Oklahomas lead to 53-41, and he later hit a 3-pointer to bump OUs lead to 13. A 3 by Frank Booker increased the Sooners lead to 16 points, then Nash committed his fourth foul with 14:17 remaining, and Clark fouled out with 12:18 to go. A 3-pointer by Smart and a dunk by Brown cut OUs lead to 64-57. Spangler scored on a putback, was fouled by Smart and made the free throw to put the Sooners up 75-62 with just over 6 minutes to play. Oklahoma State cut Oklahomas lead to six, but Woodards 3-pointer with just under 3 minutes left bumped the Sooners lead to 10. “Give them credit,” Ford said. “Every time we would make a semi-run at them, they would make a big shot and we would make a silly play.” The rematch is Feb. 15 at Oklahoma State. “Theyre a great team,” Neal said. “Theyre going to do some good things this year, and were going to have to be ready when we play them in Stillwater.” ’ ’ ’

LONDON — Tottenhams Champions League qualification hopes were stymied by West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green and the goal-frame on Saturday after the team was held to a 0-0 draw by its relegation-threatened London rival. Green tipped Gareth Bales free kick onto the crossbar and twice denied Roman Pavlyuchenko late in a dominant but frustrating match for Tottenham in the Premier League. Jermain Defoe spurned several chances to score his 100th Tottenham goal, while Michael Dawson and Aaron Lennon hit the goal-frame in the first half. “If we had got one today we could have won quite comfortably,” Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said. “We passed the ball great and made a lot of chances but couldnt get the break today.” The draw gives Chelsea — in the fourth and final Champions League spot — a chance to move five points ahead of Tottenham by beating Manchester City on Sunday. West Ham ended the match a point above the relegation zone, but results later Saturday could return the team to the bottom three. “We defended well as a team — the back four had to do its job,” West Ham captain Matthew Upson said. “Rob Green made a couple of outstanding saves and kept us in it. Its a good result for us.” It was the first time the Hammers had not conceded a goal in an away league match this season. “They defended well but we kept hitting the woodwork,” Redknapp said “They rode their luck at times.” After only three minutes, Luka Modrics curling shot hit the bar and Bale then cut a low cross inside the box for Defoe, who flicked a shot just wide. Carlton Cole wasted West Hams best first-half chance by shooting straight at goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, however the visitors were otherwise on the back foot. Modric curled a shot wide after beating his marker on the edge of the penalty area, before picking out Rafael van der Vaart with a short corner that the Netherlands forward volleyed wide. Before halftime, Lennon struck the post after racing down the right, with Defoe shooting wide after being caught by surprise by the rebound. West Ham nearly went ahead at the start of the second half. Cole turned William Gallas on the edge of the penalty area and forced Gomes into making a one-handed save. Green kept the scores level with a quick reaction save with his legs from Defoes shot from six meters out. But West Ham looked more comfortable in the second half, with Cole having an appeal for a penalty turned down after Dawson appeared to push the striker as he went up for a header. And Demba Ba unleashed a 25-meter (yard) shot that Gomes blocked with a diving one-handed save. Pavlyuchenko fluffed a chance to put Tottenham ahead from close range, but then almost immediately made up for his failure, drawing a save from Green with a long-range strike. Green was called into action again to tip Bales shot onto the bar, before Defoe and Modric blasted shots well over his goal in the closing minutes. Redknapp was frustrated by the draw, and by Van der Vaart deciding to head straight down the tunnel after being substituted with around 20 minutes to go. “I dont like that,” Redknapp said. “Ill talk to him about that. If youre part of a team, you should stay and watch the game. Hes a good lad and I just made a substitution.” . That doesnt mean he cant dial up flashes of the Freak he once was — especially against the San Diego Padres. Lincecum pitched his second no-hitter against the Padres in less than a year, allowing only one runner Wednesday and leading the San Francisco Giants to a 4-0 win. “Ive always been that guy who will kind of go for the strikeout,” Lincecum said. “I think my first no-hitter I had 13, so I think I was going for those a little bit more often.” “Today I tried to be a little bit more efficient and take what they were going to give me. They were giving me a lot of groundballs and a lot of pop flies, so I was just going to try to keep attacking the way that I was,” he said. Lincecum totally shut down the weakest-hitting team in the majors, striking out six and walking one in a 113-pitch outing — 35 fewer than he needed last July 13 against the Padres in his first no-hitter. Lincecum retired the final 23 batters after walking Chase Headley in the second inning, relying much more on his off-speed stuff than his fastball. Though the Padres hit a few balls hard, San Francisco fielders didnt need to make any exceptional plays to preserve Lincecums gem. The right-hander with two NL Cy Young Awards became just the second pitcher in major league history to twice no-hit the same team. Hall of Famer Addie Joss did it for Cleveland against the Chicago White Sox with a perfect game in 1908 and a no-hitter in 1910. “Its hard enough to do one,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “To do two, that puts you in a little different class. I couldnt be happier.” Lincecum (6-5) threw the 16th no-hitter in Giants team history. Just one other pitcher has thrown two — Christy Mathewson for the New York Giants more than 100 years ago. In fact, Lincecum joined Sandy Koufax, Randy Johnson and Roy Halladay as the only pitchers with two Cy Young awards and two no-hitters. “Just to be in that company allows me a chance to pat myself on the back a little bit,” he said. Making the performance even sweeter was the fact that Lincecum even got two hits of his own, becoming the first pitcher with two hits in a no-hitter since Rick Wise hit two homers for Philadelphia against Cincinnati on June 23, 1971. “Regardless of what they did, I think its cool I got two hits anyway because up to today I only had one and a pretty poor batting average,” Lincecum said. “I got that thing above .100 and I feel much better about it.” But Lincecum will always be known for his pitching. He arrived as a shaggy-haired phenom nicknamed the Freak in 2007 for his ability to generate tremendous velocity from his slight frame. He won NL Cy Young awards in 2008 and 09 and helped lead the Giants to their first World Series title in San Francisco the following season. As age and wear and tear ate away at his velocity, Lincecum was forced to change what kind of pitcher he is.dddddddddddd It hasnt been an easy transformation at times as he posted a losing record the past two seasons as his ERA hovered around 5.00. He was even relegated to the bullpen when the Giants won it all again in 2012 but was brought back with a $35 million, two-year deal last off-season for moments just like this. “I think its been a battle for him at times to make that transformation to what he is now,” Bochy said. “Sometimes less is more, and thats what I think if anything, hopefully he learned today.” Headley walked with one out in the second after falling behind 1-2 in the count. The Padres began the day worst in the majors in batting average, runs and hits. “He was good. It wasnt a fluke,” Headley said. “His split and changeup or whatever you want to call it. If its not the best in baseball, then its one of the best pitches in baseball. Even with the diminished velocity, its still a tremendous pitch. He was able to throw it for strikes when he wanted too.” This was the third no-hitter in the majors this year. Clayton Kershaw did it exactly a week ago and his Los Angeles Dodgers teammate Josh Beckett did it earlier in the season. The Padres, incidentally, are the only franchise in the big leagues that has never pitched a no-hitter. Lincecum made quick work of the San Diego hitters in the late innings. He drew a standing ovation when he batted in the eighth, then got another ovation when he took the mound to begin the ninth. “His rhythm was going,” third baseman Pablo Sandoval said. “Thats the best hes pitched. Two no-hitters, thats pretty impressive.” Lincecum struck out pinch-hitter Chris Denorfia to open the ninth. Pinch-hitter Yasmani Grandal followed with a tapper back to Lincecum, who tossed to first for the out. Will Venable was up next, and Lincecum retired him on an easy grounder to second base. Lincecum took a few steps toward first when the ball was hit, stopped to watch the play and clapped his hand into his glove when it was over. Catcher Hector Sanchez soon met Lincecum for an embrace, and the rest of the Giants joined in the celebration. “It was amazing,” Sanchez said. “Anybody wants to be part of something special like this. Thats a great feeling.” Buster Posey got four hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Ian Kennedy (5-9) allowed four runs on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out eight. The Giants took a 1-0 lead in the second when Brandon Crawford tripled and Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly. NOTES: Giants RHP Ryan Vogelsong (5-3, 4.13) is scheduled to start Thursdays series opener against Cincinnati. … RHP Tyson Ross (6-7, 3.22) starts for the Padres against Arizona on Friday. … The Padres are hosting a public memorial for Tony Gwynn on Thursday at 7:19 p.m. at Petco Park. Gwynn wore No. 19. ’ ’ ’

MIAMI – The last time Dwyane Wade played in an NBA Finals game, he needed fluid drained from his left knee and eight hours of intense game-day therapy just to get into uniform. The Miami Heat guard later described it in a single word. “Hell,” Wade said. It was also worth it, after he scored 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and hoisted his third Larry OBrien Trophy. Now, unlike last year, Wade is not dealing with any injuries heading into the Miamis finals rematch against the San Antonio Spurs. At 32 years old and with 866 NBA games already on his playing odometer, Wade still deals with plenty of aches and pains, good days and bad days, and basically has a standing appointment in the Heat training room. But compared to last seasons NBA Finals, his knees are good as new. “Hes a big-time, huge piece to our puzzle,” four-time NBA MVP and Heat star LeBron James said. “To have him out there in the groove that hes in right now, its going to help us.” The Heat are looking to win their third straight title and Wade is on the cusp of joining a list of all-time NBA greats. There are just seven players with four championships and at least one NBA Finals MVP award on their resumes: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, John Havlicek, Magic Johnson, Shaquille ONeal, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and the Spurs Tim Duncan. Wade could be the eighth person in that club. “We just want to continue to add to what were accomplishing,” Wade said. Almost forgotten amid all the memories of Wade limping about during last years playoffs — he whacked what was his “good” knee at this time last year, the surgically repaired left one, in a collision with the Spurs Manu Ginobili during Game 6 of the finals — is he had big games when Miami needed him. Through his first 14 games of the 2013 playoffs, Wade was averaging 13.6 points. In the final eight games of that post-season run, starting with Game 7 against Indiana, he averaged 19.8 points. And in the last four games of the finals, he averaged 23.5 points against the Spurs to close the series. As his knees got worse, Wade seemed to get better. “He still found a way last year,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “He really did. He had some of his biggest games not only in the finals, but Game 7, we didnt think necessarily he was going to even play that game in the Eastern Conference finals.” This year, the Heat tried to leave nothing to chance with Wades health. The so-called maintenance plan for Wade — limiting his minutes to save his knees — kicked in on the second night of the regular season. He wound up missing 28 games in all, mostly because of that rest-and-rehab scheme, to ensure that he would be good to go in the playoffs. The results cant be argued. Wade is averaging 18.7 points on 52 per cent shooting, Miami is 12-3 in the playoffs and when getting more than three days rest — like the Heat will have before Game 1 in San Antonio on Thursday night — the perennial All-Star has had games of 23, 14, 27 and 23 points on a combined 60 per cent shooting. “Dwyane is playing great,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Tuesday. “He looks a lot more spry and ready to go then he did last year in the finals.” Maybe the biggest payoff of the regular-season maintenance plan has been how Wade has closed games in this post-season. Wade is shooting 56 per cent in fourth quarters during the playoffs, the best clip of his career and the best percentage of any guard with more than 30 shots in the final period of post-season games this season. San Antonios Danny Green is second on that list, shooting just under 49 per cent. Wade doesnt like talking about his place in history. But he knows what rarefied air he would be entering with a fourth title run. “I think weve all put ourselves in great situations, and were just going to continue to try to enjoy this moment that were in because its an amazing moment,” Wade said. “Its something that, for a lifetime, is going to fulfil us as athletes. Even when we cant play this game, were going to always be able to talk about this.” And now, when talking about his health, Wade has another one-word answer: “Better.” . ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Takuma Sato won the pole at St. Petersburg for Sundays season-opening IndyCar Series race, where Tony Kanaan will make his debut in his new Target/Chip Ganassi Racing ride starting alongside him on the front row. Sato circled the street course in 1 minute, 0.01 seconds Saturday in the rain-delayed qualifying session to put his A.J. Foyt Racing entry out front. It was a stellar debut for Honda and its new twin turbo engine. “Its a fantastic day. I cant really ask any more for the start of the season,” Sato said. “A.J. said Very well done, and he was very happy, and making him happy is a very difficult thing. So Im pleased.” Sato also praised Honda Performance Development, which struggled mightily in this race a year ago. He said having the engine ready early in the off-season allowed his team to do needed testing in advance of the opener. “Last year, my first test was the end of February with the team,” he said. “Its a very short time to prepare. But this year, really the winter testing started from December, so effectively more than two months ahead of what we were last year.” Tony Kanaan qualified second, 0.2951 seconds behind the Japanese driver. Kanaan, the defending Indianapolis 500 winner, replaced Dario Franchitti during the off-season following Franchittis forced retirement from injuries suffered in an October crash. His first qualifying session with his new team led to Kanaans best starting spot at St. Pete since 2010. Its the first time he advanced to the final Fast Six round of qualifying at this course in three years. It could bode well for Kanaan, who improved seven spots to finish fourth a year ago when he drove for KVSH Racing. “Its just qualifying. Youve still got to make it to turn one (Sunday),” Kanaan shrugged. “I think it has been like three years since I have been in the top six. It feels really good, I cant thank the Target Chip Ganassi Racing guys enough. A lot of people made a lot of comments over the years because we struggled so much in qualifying in street and road courses and nobody was counting on that. I like to be the element of surprise.” Ryan Hunter-Reay was third and followed by Will Power, who had won the polee the last four years.dddddddddddd Defending IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon was fifth and Marco Andretti rounded out the Fast Six. Juan Pablo Montoya failed to advance out of his group in his first qualifying session in IndyCar. He returned to open wheel this year to drive for Roger Penske after seven seasons in NASCAR with Chip Ganassi. Hell start 18th in the 22-car field. “The biggest problem for the (car) was the last corner, for some reason. I just couldnt come off that corner and get the car to turn,” Montoya said. "Sato was in front of me and I would lose everything to him right there. It is what it is. I havent driven in wet conditions in a long time and we never had an opportunity to do it in testing. “I dont think were that far off. Im still getting acclimated. My team is still getting acclimated to me. If that process was complete we would be a lot better. We are definitely making progress.” The qualifying session was delayed more than three hours because a heavy rainstorm drenched the course and forced the race promoter to clear the grandstands and ask fans to seek shelter in various locations around the temporary street circuit. Fans huddled inside the parking garage that serves as the garage for many teams, and at least 12 drivers passed the time by posing for a “selfie” photo similar to the star-studded one Ellen DeGeneres took at the Oscars. When the qualifying session did begin, the first group was slowed by several red flags. It infuriated Sebestien Bourdais, who replaced Kanaan at KVSH Racing and is hoping for a strong debut in his hometown race. But Bourdais waited late into the session to go out onto the course, and the red flags limited him to just one qualifying lap. Hell start 13th. “This is a joke,” he grumbled. "If we are going to qualify, we at least have to have a fair shot, and we didnt. It wasnt much of a qualifying session. Because of the track conditions we waited to go out to make sure that we had room in case something happened, so everyone else got in a lap before the first red flag. “When we went back out I got one lap at speed before the second red flag. We were too conservative and I feel bad for the crew.” ’ ’ ’

Which is exactly where it landed Saturday night, with the players and league reaching a tentative agreement which – pending ratification – will end the threat of a work stoppage for the next five seasons. The $5 million figure is an increase of $600,000 per team over one year ago which means, when combined with ratification bonuses just for signing the deal, player compensation will grow to roughly $5.3 million per team this upcoming season. Historically speaking, a payroll jump of nearly $1 million per team from one season to the next is unheard of in the CFL. So why are so many players apparently unhappy with the deal? Largely because the CFL Players Association had been trying to build solidarity by pointing to the leagues new TV contract and several new stadium, while pleading its case first for a share of revenues and then for a salary cap of $6.8 million. But as time passed, the CFLPA executive sensed the that the $5 million salary cap was a deal-breaker for the league, an amount the players were likely going to have to accept either now, or in July or sometime after that. The players had every right to expect more. But any student of professional football labour knows that owners hold more of the cards in this sport than any other. Remember that three years ago, with all signs pointing to record revenues and popularity, the NFL locked out its players and rolled back their percentage of the take. All for the same reason the CFLs owners were able to gain the upper hand with their players: because they could and this is business. The unique element of the CFLs business case is that it can reasonably say it needed to make the league more economiically stable.dddddddddddd The bad old days in the CFL arent really all that long ago (its been eight years since a CFL team folded, 11 since two others were in bankruptcy) so the league based its position on prioritizing the medium to long term future of the league. There are non-monetary wins for the players in this deal, in such things as reduced hitting time in practice time, plus the fact that veteran contracts will no longer tie players to their teams for an extra year at the clubs option. But as for how this will affect the CFL game as a whole, theres not a whole lot in this agreement thats going to change the product as we know it. The league hopes the new agreement will provide the financial footing for it and its teams to invest in all areas of its business, essentially play catch-up on some of the things it wasnt able to do while it was trying to keep its head above water. With three teams having public ownership and six other franchises owned by people of considerable wealth unrelated to the business of football, the owners getting their way in this deal isnt about fat-cats trying to line their pockets. Its really about creating a business model that can drive franchise values up and make CFL franchises desirable to own in a way they havent been for decades. Which is the very best insurance the league can have and should mean the end of fire sales and circumstances where owners are tempted to throw the keys on the table and walk away. If the league operates soundly from here on, there will be better paydays in a stronger CFL down the road. Thats little consolation for this group of players, most of whom wont be around to share in the spoils that may come. But for a league that has spent much of the past 30 years trying to stay a few steps ahead of The Grim Reaper, theres no shame in striking a deal that builds a solid financial foundation to the future. ’ ’ ’

The Rangers force Game Seven, the Blackhawks hold on home ice; notes on Martin St. Louis, Sidney Crosby, Rick Nash, Ryan Suter, Jonathan Toews, Bryan Bickell and more. RANGERS PUSH BACK Facing elimination once again, the New York Rangers took a 3-1 decision against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game Six, forcing the series to Game Seven. In the wake of his mothers sudden passing this week, Rangers RW Martin St. Louis has been put more in the spotlight, particularly with Sundays game falling on Mothers Day, and St. Louis got the Rangers on the board first, scoring 3:34 into the game. It hasnt been a glorious run for St. Louis with the Rangers, scoring four goals and 15 points in 32 (regular season plus playoff) games, but this was his first goal since Game Three against Philadelphia. If hes able to perform through this adversity, thats a real credit to him in what is surely a difficult time. Pittsburghs lone goal of Game Six came from C Brandon Sutter, who now has five goals in the playoffs; only Evgeni Malkin and Jussi Jokinen, both with six, have more for the Penguins. Penguins C Sidney Crosby was held off the scoresheet again, despite playing 24:23. Crosby has been a dominant player in the playoffs, even though his point totals havent followed. He has three points in the series, and one goal in a dozen playoff games, but the Penguins ultimately need goals when Crosby is on the ice and, to this point in the postseason, Crosby has been on the ice for eight goals for and eight goals against during 5-on-5 play. That frustration appeared to boil over in Game Six, with Crosby getting into a confrontation with Rangers C Dominic Moore, which then led to Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist squirting Crosby with a water bottle in the ensuing pile-up. The best of the Rangers in terms of Game Six possession stats was D Kevin Klein, on for 11 5-on-5 shot attempts for and five against. Klein is getting limited ice time, ranking sixth among Rangers defencemen in the postseason, but he has the best possession stats among Rangers blueliners and the second-best on the team. The one player with better possession stats than Klein, RW Rick Nash, maintains that lead despite getting overrun Sunday. With Nash on the ice, at 5-on-5, the Rangers had four shot attempts for and 22 against (15.4%); with Nash off the ice, the Rangers had 52.1% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. A bad possession game puts the exclamation mark on Nashs postseason struggles — he has no goals in his 51 shots on goal. Hes now seven away from the playoff record for most shots on goal without scoring, set last year by Jaromir Jagr. That the Rangers are taking this series to Game Seven, despite Nashs ongoing struggles and limited production from St. Louis, is a testament to the rest of the club but, to some degree, the same can be said for the Penguins, who are still waiting for Crosby to break out offensively. With Game Seven all thats left to decide which team goes to the Eastern Conference Final, its a prime opportunity for the stars on either side to make the difference. BLACKHAWKS HOLD HOME ICE After a slow start at home in Game Five, the Chicago Blackhawks picked up their game, and won 2-1 over the Minnesota Wild, taking a 3-2 lead in a series in which the home team has won every game. Minnesotas first-period goal came from rookie C Erik Haula, who has been a nice playoff contributor with three goals and six points in a dozen games, and the line of Haula, Matt Cooke and Justin Fontaine had the best possession stats among Wild forwards. D Jared Spurgeon had the best possession stats for the Wild, on the ice for 19 5-on-5 shots for and and nine against (67.9%). On the other hand, Wild D Ryan Suter, who played a game-high 28:32, was on the ice for 14 shot attempts for and 28 against (his most against in the playoffs). Suter gets charged with facing both of the Blackhawks top scoring lines but, on this night, he was getting stuck in his own end all too often. Chicagos second-period rally brought goals from LW Bryan Bickell and C Jonathan Toews. Bickell scored his team-leading sixth goal of the playoffs, on the power play, but was part of a very effective line with Peter Regin and Kris Versteeg; all three were on the ice for at least 68.8% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. The game-winner came from C Jonathan Toews, who was re-united with LW Patrick Sharp and RW Marian Hossa, as Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville was shuffling lines. Toews had a dominant game, with 76.0% of shot attempts. Chicago set the pairing of Niklas Hjalmarsson and Johnny Oduya out, primarily, against Zach Parise, Mikael Granlund and Jason Pominville, and Oduya had the games best possession stats, on the ice for 16 shot attempts for and four against. The Blackhawks controlled play significantly, but the win didnt come easily for them, and isnt really a surprise given how the first four games of the series played out. Theyll have a chance to finish off the Wild in Minnesota for Game Six but, considering that the Wild are 5-0 at home in the playoffs, outscoring opponents 16-5, it will come as no surprise if this series has to go the distance. ROME — Roma beat Napoli 3-2 in the first leg of their Italian Cup semifinal on Wednesday thanks to a double from Ivory Coast forward Gervinho. The return match will take place next Wednesday. Udinese leads Fiorentina 2-1 in the other semifinal. Napoli staged a second-half comeback from two goals down after Gervinhos opener and a stunning strike from Kevin Strootman. But Gervinho scored the winner two minutes from time. “In our league, ninety per cent of the matches are played defensively but its good to play like this against strong players,” Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi said. "Its good to see games like this, theyre an advert for football. “It wasnt good for us mentally to concede a minute after the restart. But after they made it 2-2, we responded brilliantly. Another good game like tonights awaits us in Naples.” Napoli started the brighter but it was Roma which broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when Gervinho ran onto a delightful through-ball from Francesco Totti and rounded goalkeeper Pepe Reina before firing home from three meters. Strootman doubled Romas lead in the 32nd with a stunning rocket into the top right corner from more than 30 metres. Gonzalo Higuain pulled one back for Napoli a minute into the second half as the ball deflected off Mehdi Benatia and goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis got his hands to it but could not prevent it from going in. It was the former Real Madrid strikers 16th of the season. Substitute Dries Mertens levelled in the 70th, four minutes after coming off the bench, when he burst between two defenders and blasted an effort past De Sanctis. Gervinho secured the match for Roma when he collected Alessandro Florenzis pass and coolly slotted into the near side of goal. Udinese, which has eliminated both Milan teams, beat Fiorentina on Tuesday in a match which saw three wonderful goals. Antonio Di Natale broke the deadlock in the 36th minute with his first goal from open play since September but Juan Manuel Vargas smashed an effort in off the underside of the crossbar a minute from halftime. Substitute Luis Muriel scored a long-range winner for Udinese, which is hoping to reach the final for the first time since 1922. Both sides eliminated illustrious teams in the previous round. ATLANTA — A three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves moved the Phillies out of last place in the NL East and provided a huge confidence boost for their hitters. Ryan Howard capped a big series by driving in two runs with three hits and the Phillies battered Aaron Harang and the Braves 10-5 on Wednesday. Philadelphia set a season high with 18 hits. Five Phillies had three hits. “Its a good feeling because you put in the work,” said Marlon Byrd, who drove in three runs with three hits, including a homer. "It seems like youve put in the work every single day and dont get the results. The results are the key. You start feeling good about yourself. “To come out here the whole series and put up runs against a good staff is huge for us, knowing that the work weve put in is starting to show up on the field.” Howard, who hit homers in each of the first two games of the series, drove in a run with a double in the Phillies five-run second inning. He added a run-scoring single in the fifth. He had five hits, four walks and six RBIs in the series in Atlanta, where he has a good history. Howard has 46 career homers against Atlanta, more than against any other team. His 20 homers at Turner Field are his high mark for any road stadium. Asked what made the difference for Howard in the series, Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said “Possibly just some confidence.” “This is a place hes hit well so maybe it brought back some positive thoughts,” Sandberg said. “He has been seeing the ball real well, made them throw strikes and used the whole field.” Evan Gattis hit a two-run homer in Atlantas four-run first inning off Roberto Hernandez (3-5). Ryan Doumit also homered and hit a two-run single for Atlanta. Hernandez overcame his rough first inning to last six innings, giving up five runs and eight hits and five walks. He had been 0-4 in eight starts since his last win on May 4 against Washington. “He had a rough first and the offence bounced right back for him and picked him up there,” Sandberg said. Harang (5-6) allowed nine runs, eight earned, in five innings. He threw 115 pitches while allowing 13 hits and three walks. The Phillies have won seven of nine. Atlanta has lost eight of 12. The Phillies sweep knocked the Braves out of first place in the NL East, just in time for a visit to first-place Washington. “Were going to go into D.C. with a little bit of a chip on our shoulders,” Doumit said. “This wasnt a good series. It left a bad taste in our mouths, but were going to go take it out on the Nationals.” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez tried a new lineup, and rookie Tommy La Stella was 0 for 4 with a walk in his first game hitting leadoff. “I thought we swung the bats well,” Gonzalez said. “We were knocking on the door there almost the entire game trying to get back in it, which is a good sign.” Trailing 4-2, the Phillies scored five runs in the second on six straight two-out hits, including a two-run single by John Mayberry Jr., who had three RBIs. Shortstop Cesar Hernandez, batting leadoff for the first time this season, had three hits and scored two runs. Domonic Brown and Will Nieves also had three hits. Nieves left the game with what Sandberg said appeared to be a quadriceps injury. Antonio Bastardo and Ken Giles combined for three scoreless innings behind Hernandez. NOTES: Phillies CF Ben Revere (sore left knee) had a pinch-hit groundout in the eighth. … The Braves rested several starters including LF Justin Upton, who left Tuesday nights game with dizziness. BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil — An overpass under construction collapsed Thursday in this World Cup host city, killing at least two people and trapping a commuter bus, two construction trucks and a car in an embarrassment for a country that has been basking in praise for what has mostly been a smoothly running soccer tournament. At least 22 people were reported injured. There was not yet any word on whether foreign tourists were among those killed or injured. Brazilian officials didnt think the casualty numbers would rise too sharply — though they said they had not yet reached a small passenger car that was flattened by the falling overpass. It was not known if anyone inside the car escaped or remained inside. The incident is the biggest black eye yet for Brazils hosting of the World Cup, which has been carried out with less chaos than many had feared. In the run-up to the event, there were serious concerns about the ability of Brazils airports and roads to handle the influx of tourists because of delays or outright cancellations of projects to improve urban transportation. After Brazil was awarded the World Cup in 2007, politicians promised $8 billion would be spent on 56 airports, subway lines and other such projects nationwide. But less than 10 of the infrastructure projects were completed in time for the tournament, including the project where the overpass collapsed in Belo Horizonte. It was not known what caused the overpass to fall. Cowan, the construction company responsible for building it, said investigators were on site but had not released any conclusions. “It sounded like an earthquake or a bomb,” said Alexandra Pereira, a teacher who was taking a nap with her 10-year-old son in her apartment building just 20 metres (yards) from the overpass. “I looked out my window and panicked. I couldnt see anything but a huge cloud of dust.” Within seconds, Pereira said, her neighbours from the ground floor rushes out to pull injured from the bus that was partially trapped under the overpass. Pereira said she and several neighbours in a group of nine residential buildings close to the overpass had long complained to the mayors office that they feared for their safety from the construction and asked authorities for compensation so they could move. She said the request was rejected and the mayors office assured them the project was safe. The mayors office ws closed for the day, but Lt. Col. Edgar Estevo da Silva, a spokesman for the fire department, said officials had inspected the nearby apartment buildings and didnt find any sign they were at risk because of the overpass collapse. Among the dead was a woman who was driving a commuter bus trapped by the overpass died, said Capt. Federico Pascual of the Belo Horizonte fire department. An official in the mayors office reported the death of a second person. The official said 22 people were known to be injured. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasnt authorized to talk to the media about the incident. The overpass collapsed about 3 miles (5 kilometres) from Mineirao stadium, which has hosted several World Cup matches in recent weeks and is the site of a semifinal match Tuesday. The overpass “arched over a really busy thoroughfare,” Pascual said. Security camera footage showed heavy traffic on the street below the structure the moment that the overpass collapsed, striking vehicles below and trapping them underneath. LONDON — Milos Raonic joined Eugenie Bouchard in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon as the talented pair continued their run at the record books. Eighth seed Raonic achieved his best career showing at the All England Club on Tuesday with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-3 fourth-round win over Japanese 10th seed Kei Nishikori. Raonic becomes just the second Canadian to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals in the Open era, which began in 1968. He next faces Australian wild card Nick Kyrgios, who shocked second seed Rafael Nadal with a 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-2 win later Tuesday. Bouchard made her way there on Monday with a defeat of Alize Cornet. She will face off in the next round against German ninth seed Angelique Kerber, who upset fifth seed Maria Sharapova 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4, winning on a seventh match point. Bouchard hammered Kerber in the French Open fourth round a month ago. “The match against Bouchard will be a tough one,” said Kerber. "I lost against her in Paris, but Im feeling right now better and Im feeling better on grass. “Ive never played her on this surface, so I will be focused like today just on myself.” Raonic laid down 34 aces in his victory over Nishikori, who is coached by former French Open winner Michael Chang. Raonic broke three times, saved five break points against his serve and ended with 64 winners in the comprehensive victory. “Ive been serving in general well this tournament, and even throughout the clay court season,” said Raonic. "But obviously here it sort of gets exemplified a little bit more. Its a little bit more on display. “Thats helping me, taking a lot of pressure off me and putting more so on my opponents.” The 23-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., became the first Canadian to defeat Nishikori. Thee Japanese player had won his previous six matches against Canadians, including two against Raonic.dddddddddddd In mens doubles, veteran Daniel Nestor of Toronto and Serbian partner Nenad Zimonjic finished off a rain-delayed match from Monday as the third seeds reached the quarter-finals over Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay and David Marrero of Spain 7-6 (8), 6-4, 6-4. Vancouvers Vasek Pospisil and American Jack Sock reached the third round over Indias Rohan Bopanna and Aisam Quereshi of Pakistan 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-3, 7-5. Raonic opened the match by losing his first service game, which allowed Nishikori to win the opening set in 39 minutes. Raonic fought hard to come back. He broke twice in the second set to get back level at a set each, and won the third set on a tiebreaker. Raonic earned a late break in the eighth game of the fourth set, then set up a match point with a service winner and advanced on his first opportunity a game later. Raonic said hes not particularly impressed by the records he is setting in his career. “To to this point there hasnt been as much Canadian success, especially on the singles side in the mens,” he said. “You appreciate them, but you dont give them too much value because its ambitions that are beyond doing what no Canadian has done before. Its about really trying to become the best player in the world.” Raonic said his serve will be key in his Wednesday quarter-final. “Ive been able to do that so far, its whats going to put the pressure on my opponent,” he said. "Its whats going to give me a bit of freedom on the return games. “After that, the most important thing is going to be the attitude, the mental approach. I want to do much better than I did in Paris. I feel like Im ready to do so.” ’ ’ ’

LAS VEGAS — Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes says Georges St-Pierre should retire for good. St-Pierre has been on hiatus since vacating his 170-pound title following a controversial win over Johny (Bigg Rigg) Hendricks at UFC 167 last November. The 33-year-old from Montreal cited unspecified personal matters, saying he needed time away from the sport. Hendricks went on to win the welterweight crown while St-Pierre, who continues to work out, required knee surgery after an injury in training. St-Pierre has not announced his future plans other than to say that if he comes back, it wont be in 2014. Firas Zahabi, his longtime coach, told the MMAFighting website recently that he expects his fighter to return. “I think theres a lot of fire left in him,” he said of St. Pierre. “Especially since he got injured now, hes probably more motivated than ever … I think theres a lot of martial arts left in him.” But Hughes, who lost the UFC title to St-Pierre at UFC 65 in November 2006, says now may be the time for St-Pierre to finish on a winning note. “The UFC would hate me saying this but Im going to say it anyway,” said Hughes, now vice-president of athlete development and government relations for the UFC. "If I was GSP, Id probably hang them up. Here I am a guy that lost my (last) two fights and Id love to get back in there (to finish on a win). And Georges got his hand raised the last fight. “So if I had to give advice, Id say, You want to get out? Get out.” The 40-year-old Hughes, a UFC Hall of Famer, prefaced his remarks by saying he is a fan of St. Pierre. "I like him. He always gets his hand raised and he always does it with a method. But he took a punishment with Johny Hendricks and you could tell that by his face at the (post-fight) press conference. "Hes made a lot of money. I dont know what he makes a fight, but hes made a lot of money. He made a lot more money than I have. And Im retired. So he could step back, retire. Hes got plenty of money. "And it seems like maybe hes even lost a little bit of the drive. I wish he was more wanting to go out and finish somebody nowadays. Its just like hes going out there and kind of going through the moves, so I dont think his hearts there. “He did get beat up last time. I dont know if he wants to come back and take a beating like that.” If GSP was to return to the Octagon, there will be people waiting to welcome him. “Hes going to come back against a guy like Robbie Lawler, whos going to hit him. And Johny Hendricks, whos going to hit him,” said Hughes. Hughes also cited St-Pierre branching out into movies like “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” “So theres not many reasons for him to come back … You tell me whats he got to come back for?” . The 2012 Vezina Trophy winner rebounded from a poor game with 31 saves and Rick Nash scored his second goal of the season to lift the New York Rangers over the Florida Panthers 5-2 on Wednesday night. Lundqvist was back in net after getting pulled from a 5-0 loss at Tampa Bay on Monday, when he gave up four goals in two periods. “I just tried to play my game tonight. It was important for me and the team to bounce back with a solid performance,” Lundqvist said. “Im happy with the way I played.” It didnt seem anyones confidence in Lundqvist was shaken. “Thats what I expected from him,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. “Hes a world-class goaltender, strong mentally. I didnt think the game in Tampa was a 5-0 game and tonight obviously we could have played stronger in some situations, but when we did have a breakdown we had a goaltender that made some saves.” Mats Zuccarello, Brad Richards and Derick Brassard also scored for the Rangers. Carl Hagelin added an empty-net goal with 24 seconds left. Nick Bjugstad and Scottie Upshall scored in the third period for Florida. Tim Thomas allowed four goals on 21 shots. After the Panthers scored twice to cut their deficit to one, Zuccarellos power-play goal made it 4-2 with 1:28 left. The Rangers improved to 3-1 on their five-game road trip. The five goals tied their season high. With a 3-0 lead, it seemed Lundqvist was cruising toward a shutout. But two Panthers goals late in the third made it close. Florida cut it to 3-1 on Upshalls backhander in front with 7:32 left. Upshall has eight points in his past eight games. Bjugstad brouught the puck through the neutral zone and put it in from the left side at 16:17 to close to 3-2.dddddddddddd “We did a good job of coming back,” Upshall said. “It was a big effort.” The Panthers couldnt score again, and the Rangers scored twice in the final 1:28 to put the game away. “I wouldnt say it was one of our best games, but at the end of the day we found a way to win,” Vigneault said. “And finding ways to win is the goaltender making some key saves at the right moment; we got that.” Florida is 0-2 against the Rangers this season. “We werent good in certain areas,” coach Peter Horachek said. “We turned pucks over when we shouldnt. We didnt manage when we should.” Nashs third-period goal put New York ahead 3-0. Nash, who missed 17 games with a concussion this season, got control of the puck in the neutral zone and his wrist shot from the slot beat Thomas on the stick side at 5:32. “It was a weird game. The main thing is we got the job done on the road,” Nash said. The Rangers took a 1-0 lead on Brassards power-play goal in the first. Brassard took a pass from Zuccarello in the slot and tipped it past Thomas glove at 12:13. Brassards goal was his fifth of the season and second in 10 games. The Rangers were 0 for 9 on the power play in their previous two games. New York stretched its lead to 2-0 on Richards goal late in the second period. Richards shot from the right circle went through the legs of two Panthers defenders and Thomas at 18:53. Richards has a team-high seven goals. NOTES: Rangers forward Taylor Pyatt returned to the lineup after missing eight games with a concussion. … Panthers C Jesse Winchester missed his third game with a lower-body injury. ’ ’ ’

NEW YORK - Surgery, suspensions and thuggery. The storylines surrounding the Eastern Conference final reached Shakespearean proportions Friday. As he was in Game 3 Thursday night, Montreal fourth-liner Brandon Prust was slap bang in the middle of the mayhem. What had seemed like a quiet off-day quickly turned dramatic when New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault revealed that forward Derek Stepan, laid out by an unpenalized blindside hit from Prust two minutes 45 seconds into the game, had suffered a broken jaw that needed surgery. Three hours later, Rangers agitator Dan Carcillo was suspended 10 games for physical abuse of an official on a play that came minutes after the Prust hit, as New York looked for retribution. The Carcillo incident came 5:51 into Thursdays game after a fight between Derek Dorsett of the Rangers and Prust. Carcillo, a fourth-liner, had been penalized for charging Prust on the play. The league said Carcillo “physically applied force to linesman Scott Driscoll while being escorted to the penalty box.” The suspension was automatic under category 2 of Rule 40.3, titled Physical Abuse of Officials. Prust, meanwhile, was handed a two-game suspension for interference for the Stepan hit later Friday. It has added more drama to a series that saw Montreals all-world goalie Carey Price sent to the sidelines in Game 1 after coming out the worst for wear in a collision with six-foot-three, 230-pound Ranger Chris Kreider. For Vigneault, the missed Prust call Thursday set off a domino effect whose ripples were still being felt the next day. “Four referees missed the call,” Vigneault said. "Stepan is injured. The same player that called the hit on Price accidental but on purpose. Late hit, everything that you want to get out of the game, that was his hit on Stepan. "And what saddens me about that hit is, if the call is made on the ice, were on a five-minute power play, and what happened to Dan Carcillo, and what Dan did is inexcusable, and hes going to pay a big price for it, but if the call is made on the ice, hes not put in that position. “So its unfortunate. Step (Stepan) right now at this time is probably getting operated on. He broke his jaw (Thursday), so well have an idea of the time frame (Saturday). But those are stuff that happens during the game that you have to deal with, and thats what were going to try to do.” Dressed in jeans and flip-flops, Vigneault looked like he was in relaxation mode. But he was clearly irate at a sequence of events which he believes could have been avoided. Stepan went briefly to the dressing room after the hit, yelling over his shoulder at Prust as he exited. But he returned later in the period and amazingly played a total of 17:45 in the game. A team spokesman said X-rays that night were negative. But Stepan was in pain and saw a specialist Friday, when further tests detected the broken jaw. It seems unlikely that Stepan, who centres Rick Nash and Kreider on the Rangers top line, will be back any time soon. New York leads the series to two games to one. Prust, a former Ranger who counts Canadian UFC lightweight Sam (Hands of Stone) Stout as a friend, was not made available Friday as both teams, skipping practice in advance of Game 4 Sunday, offered up their coaches and select players. Montreal coach Michel Therrien defended his player. “His intention was not to hurt anyone,” he said. “Like Kreider, his intention, even if he was going hard to the net and then laying on Carey Price, Im sure his intention was not to hurt Carey Price. Brandon Prust, he tried to finish his check. His intention, honestly, was not to hurt Stepan.” Then Therrien suggested the Canadiens knew better than anybody about losing a star player. “If there is a team that can understand the loss of a player, its us. We lost Carey Price in the first game of the series with the hit on Kreider when he hit Carey Price, and we felt frustrated at the time. Were still frustrated not having our goalie, our No. 1 most important player.” Therrien, taking a page from Vigneaults book from the Price injury debate, called it “a hockey hit.” Habs forward David Desharnais called it a clean hit, with Prust just wanting to get his team going. “You never want to see a guy injured like that but, like I said, we were fighting for our lives (Thursday) and we wanted to set the tone,” he said. At five foot seven, Desharnais is one of the Hobbit-like Canadiens. But the first-liner wins praise from his coach for his compete level. And he knows the value of getting under an opponents skin, as Prust clearly did in Game 3. “They were not happy about it,” he said of the Rangers. “Everybody got a little chirp here and there and the game was on.” A day later, the Rangers still wanted justice. “I think guys were unhappy there wasnt a call on the play,” Kreider told reporters. “Obviously, it was away from the play so not a lot of people saw it. But I think the sentiment today is the same as it was yesterday, that it wasnt a clean hit. Hopefully the league deals with it justly.” . ROTTERDAM, Netherlands – Top-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina returned after a month out with injury to advance to the second round of the ABN Amro tournament on Wednesday. The defending champion beat Gael Monfils of France 7-6 (6), 6-3, while second-seeded Andy Murray of Britain dispatched Edouard Roger-Vasselin, also of France, 6-3, 6-3. Making his first appearance since injuring his wrist a month ago, Del Potro had difficulty with his service games in the first set. Monfils served up 5 aces to zero and was also the first to take a mini-break in the tiebreaker, before he double-faulted and allowed Del Potro to reassert control. In the second set, the Argentine was dominant, breaking Monfils serve in the fourth game. The only hint of trouble came in the deciding game, when Monfils took Del Potro to two break points. But Del Potro saved both and went on to seal the victory. “My wrist is getting better by the day and it was fine today against Monfils,” he said. “Its always difficult to come back after an injury, but I hope I can hold on to this level of play.” Murray, who won the tournament in 2009, worked efficiently against Roger-Vasselin, winning in just under 90 minutes. RIMOUSKI, Que. — The Saint John Sea Dogs are the Presidents Cup champions for the second straight year. Stanislav Galiev scored a hat trick and added two assists as the Sea Dogs defeated the hometown Rimouski Oceanic 8-0 Thursday in Game 4 of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey Leagues championship series. Saint John won the best-of-seven series 4-0 and will defend its Memorial Cup championship in Shawinigan, Que. Tomas Jurco had two goals and three assists for Saint John, which led 5-0 after the first period and 6-0 through 40 minutes. Zack Phillips, Danick Gauthier and Jonathan Huberdeau added singles. “Our first few goals were all about shooting the puck from the slot,” Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant said. “Guys were going hard to the net. Its a simple game and we played it to perfection.” Nathan Beaulieu and Ian Saab each had two assists for Saint John, while Mathieu Corbeil made 24 saves en route to the shutout. Sea Dogs forward Charlie Coyle, who picked up an assist for his 34th point of the post-season, won the Guy Lafleur Trophy as playoff MVP. Oceanic netminder Jacob Gervais-Chouinard stopped 21 of 26 shots and Carl Hozjan stopped six of nine. Jurco gave Saint John a 1-0 lead at 4:14 of the first period, burying a feed from Galiev. Serena, playing her first tournament since a fourth-round loss at the Australian Open, had little trouble bypassing fifth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. The only blip in Williams game came when she lost serve in a tentatively played fifth game in the first set. “She was the better player tonight,” Jankovic said. "Way better. “I just played a bad match on my terms.” The only drama in the 76-minute match came in the final game with Jankovic serving. The umpire, Kader Nouni of France, told Jankovic she was serving too fast and then too slow, when taking more than the 25 seconds allotted. Williams was briefly brought into the fray when Jankovic made note that Williams often took more than the 25 seconds allowed to serve. After the match, the players conversed at the net and both reported they left the court on good terms. “I told her at the end, Look, I didnt mean anything. Im sorry if I played slow,” Williams said. "She was like, No, it was more like they say (I) play too fast and then too slow. She said she couldnt get it right. “I was like, Look, are we cool because Im cool with you?” In that final game, Jankovic initially rebounded from love-40 before Williams won on a fourth match point with a scorching forehand passing shot. Thats what she does really well. I have to give her credit for that.” Serving at 5-4 in the second set, Williams missed out on a match point when Pennetta hit a forehand crosscourt winner to bring the score to deuce. Four points later and Pennetta broke serve to even the score at 5-5. After Pennetta dropped serve in the 11th game Williams had a second chance to close out the match. Initially, Williams fell behind 0-40. On a second match point Pennetta popped a return long to concede the win. Williams will play eighth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, the 2011 Dubai champion, in Fridays semifinals. Wozniacki had little trouble dispatching 27th-ranked Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-1, 6-2. “That was really pleasing, and I always know that Sorana can be a tricky opponent,” Wozniacki said. “I felt like I served well and I put the pressure on her and played the way I wanted to play today.” Although not guaranteed, Venus Williams wasnt opposed to thinking ahead to the possibility of an all-Williams final on Saturday. “It would be fantastic,” Venus said. “But we both have to get there.” ’ ’ ’

LONDON – Former champion Maria Sharapova saved six match points before falling to Angelique Kerber in the fourth round at Wimbledon on Tuesday, ending her bid to win a second title at the All England Club a decade after her first. Five-time champion Serena Williams, meanwhile, struggled to even hit the ball over the net in a doubles match with sister Venus and pulled out after only three games with what officials called a viral illness. Sharapova, a five-time major champion, saved one match point at 5-2 down in the third set and five more in the final game before hitting a backhand long on the seventh. That gave the ninth-seeded Kerber a stirring 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 win on Centre Court in a match that lasted 2 hours, 37 minutes. “Its unbelievable,” said the German, a semifinalist two years ago. “It was so tough (a) match. Every single set was so close. Marias a great player. I was just fighting, concentrating and focusing on myself. Im so happy to be in the quarters now.” Kerber will next face 20-year-old Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard, the only woman to reach the semifinals this year at both the Australian Open and French Open. Bouchard beat Kerber in the fourth round at the French. Sharapova, who won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2004 at the age of 17, was coming off her latest major championship at the French Open last month. “Its absolutely normal for people to have high expectations of me doing well in Grand Slam stages,” Sharapova said. “I certainly do, as well. Today could have gone either way, and it didnt go my way.” On a day when seven-time mens champion Roger Federer sailed into the quarterfinals, Serena was out of sorts from the moment the pre-match warmup began. She had trouble collecting tennis balls from the ball kids and missed completely on some practice strokes. The start of the second-round doubles against Kristina Barrois and Stefanie Voegele was put off for about 10 minutes while Serena sat in her chair and was examined by medical staff. In the third game, Serena hit four double-faults. She hit serves that bounced before reaching the net. Umpire Kader Nouni climbed down from his chair and walked over to speak to Serena. The sisters walked to the sideline holding hands, and the match was stopped. Serena wiped away tears as she left the court. The Wimbledon referees office and WTA said Serena had a viral illness. She left the grounds a few hours later in a tournament car with Venus. While Sharapova sought to dictate play with her big-swinging groundstrokes, Kerber played counter-attacking tennis and went for her shots when the opportunities came. The match featured high tension and intensity. Sharapovas shrieks grew louder and louder as the match wore on. Kerber went up 4-1 and saved two break points to lead 5-2 in the final set. She held a match point on Sharapovas serve, but the Russian hit a deep backhand that she couldnt handle. With Kerber serving for the match in the next game, Sharapova broke for 5-4. Then Kerber went up 0-40 on Sharapovas serve, but the Russian erased those three match points. Two more came and went. Sharapova twice earned game points but couldnt convert. Finally, on the sixth match point of the game, it ended with Sharapovas backhand error. Federer kept up his bid for a record eighth Wimbledon title by beating Tommy Robredo to reach the quarterfinals for the 12th time. Federer, who has not dropped a set in the tournament, overwhelmed the Spaniard 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 in just over 90 minutes. “All the things are happening that need to be happening to go deep in this tournament again,” he said. Federers win set up an all-Swiss duel with Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka, who beat Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7), 6-3 to make it to the quarterfinals for the first time. Eighth-seeded Milos Raonic became the first Canadian man to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals since Robert Powell in 1912, beating No. 10 Kei Nishikori of Japan 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4) 6-3. The first woman into the semifinals was No. 23 Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic, who beat Ekaterina Makarova of Russia, 6-3 6-1. French Open runner-up Simona Halep breezed into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan. Her next opponent will be 2013 finalist Sabine Lisicki of Germany, who overcame shoulder trouble to defeat Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. ___ . MILWAUKEE — Detroit Pistons point guard Brandon Jennings had tried to dismiss Wednesday nights matchup against his former team as simply another game on the teams schedule. The closer it got to tipoff against the Milwaukee Bucks, the harder that became. “I was nervous in the beginning because Im not used to being on the other side,” Jennings said. “There were a lot of emotions going on. The whole time I felt like it was just another game. But once it got closer to game time, my nerves were just going.” Jennings struggled considerably in the first half, but finished with 17 points and 11 assists in helping the Pistons to a 105-98 win over the Bucks in his return to Milwaukee. “Once the second half started, I settled down and just played basketball,” Jennings said. Andre Drummond had 24 points and 19 rebounds and the Pistons rode a strong second half to victory. Greg Monroe contributed 18 points and 17 rebounds for the Pistons, who had five players score 15 or more points. “Going into the game, we were really concerned about matchups,” Bucks coach Larry Drew said. “We felt they were just too big and wed have to mix our defences up and hopefully outrebound those guys. We just could not physically overcome that size.” Detroit hadnt had two players pull down at least 15 rebounds apiece since Feb. 10, 2005, when Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace accomplished the feat. “Were starting to jell, starting to find ourselves and an identity,” Drummond said. “The first half was tough for us. We let the fatigue get to us a little bit.” That led to a change of strategy in the second half. “We got it down low because we knew our jump shots werent really going to fall because our legs were tired. So we drove to the hoop and got the foul calls,” Drummond said. Detroit shot 42 foul shots and Milwaukee had 22. Jennings spent four seasons with the Bucks after the team drafted him 10th overall in 2009 out of Oak Hill Academy. He joined the Pistons in July after a sign-and-trade deal that sent Brandon Knight and Khris Middleton to the Bucks. A restricted free-agent at the time, Jennings inked a three-year, $24 million deal with the Pistons. The sparse crowd at the BMO Harris Bradley Center booed loudly when Jennings was introduced before the game and each time he touched the ball early in the contest. Jennings missed all four of his shots from the field in the first quarter but had two early assists that led to dunks.dddddddddddd “The boos didnt hurt,” Jennings said. “I still have a lot of fans here. At the end of the day, the fans supported us through the good and bad. It didnt bother me.” Jennings didnt score until sinking a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3:03 remaining in the second quarter. He finished 4 of 16 from the field. “We tried to get him a basket early to kind of settle him down a little bit,” Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks said. “But he missed a couple shots that he normally makes.” In the first meeting between the teams on Nov. 25 in Detroit, Jennings had 15 points and 13 assists, including four of six from 3-point range, in sparking Detroit to a 113-94 win. “Brandon handled himself like a professional,” Drummond said. “He got booed, but its all part of the game.” Ersan Ilyasova, who has been plagued by injuries that include a sore ankle, scored a season high 22 points, including 16 in the first half, and had 10 rebounds off the bench to lead the Bucks, who have lost 13 of 14. Middleton added 14 points for Milwaukee. “Its the first time I feel healthy. My ankle is getting better,” Ilyasova said. We have to find a way to play much better. We have to come together and find a way to win games." The Pistons trailed by five at the half, but used a 16-0 run midway through the third quarter to take a 10-point lead. The Bucks got within five points on Knights 3 with 1:36 remaining in the game, but thats as close as they would get. Ekpe Udoh had five blocked shots in the second quarter for Milwaukee, tying his career high. He finished with six. The Bucks used a 15-1 run to open a 38-31 second-quarter lead and held at 50-45 advantage at halftime. Detroit made just 33 per cent of its shots over the first two quarters. NOTES: Police issued municipal citations to Bucks centre Larry Sanders for disorderly conduct and assault and battery stemming from a fight last month at a downtown Milwaukee nightclub. Drew had no comment when asked about the citations. Sanders had surgery on his right thumb on Nov. 11 after getting hurt during the scrum. He initially was expected to be out four to six weeks. Drew on Wednesday had no update on a timetable for Sanders return. … Pistons guard Chauncey Billups remained sidelined with left knee tendinitis and guard Will Bynum was inactive with an adductor strain. ’ ’ ’

ANAHEIM – It was one of the funnier moments in this years Stanley Cup playoffs. Anaheim Ducks winger Corey Perry squirted water into one of Jeff Carters hockey gloves, which was left on top of the boards by the Kings bench, unattended, during a commercial break. The Los Angeles Kings centre appeared unamused and voiced displeasure to a nearby linesman. “Just trying to, I guess, get under peoples skin,” said Perry with a shrug when asked about the prank he pulled in Game 1 of the series. “Just try to get people off their game.” But so far in the first-ever playoff showdown between the NHLs two southern California teams it has been the Kings, who have gotten the Ducks off their game as Perry, a 43-goal scorer in the regular season, and Hart Trophy nominee Ryan Getzlaf have failed to make a major impact. “Him and I put a lot of pressure on each other and on ourselves and its our responsibility to get the team going, to produce and we havent done that,” Perry admitted. So far it has been the Kings top line featuring Selke Trophy nominee Anze Kopitar, which has gotten the best of the Ducks dynamic duo. “In the playoffs you have to be better than the guy across from you,” Getzlaf said. “If hes playing great you got to be better than that. Thats how you find a way to win.” “If you know Ryan, he puts a lot of onus on himself,” said Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau, “and he knows hes the leader of this group and when hes going to his best [level] then we usually have a good result. He feels he needs to be a little bit better, hes probably correct.” Post-game on Monday, Getzlaf said he was “ticked off” by how the series has unfolded. And the Ducks captain made it clear on Tuesday that the anger he felt in the moments after the loss has yet to subside. “Yeah, Im still mad. I want to win and when we dont win I get mad. Thats just [my] nature I guess.” And while Getzlaf believes he can be better he certainly doesnt shoulder all the blame for the bind his team is in. “Its not all about me. Im not going to go out and win Game 3 by myself thats for sure. The story of our season has been our depth and our lineup and we need, from top to bottom, everybody pushing.” The Kopitar line, which also features captain Dustin Brown and sniper Marian Gaborik, is likely to be matched up against the Getzlaf unit over the next two games as Kings head coach Darryl Sutter will have the advantage of last change at the Staples Center. But Anaheims lack of success isnt about one matchup. The Kings have tightened up all over the ice and are playing the same suffocating style that led to a Cup two years ago. “They didnt win the Jennings Trophy just by luck,” said Boudreau. “Theyre a good defensive team.” The Kings allowed the fewest goals in the NHL in the regular season (2.05 goals per game). Los Angeles also led the league in hits. “The system [they play] is really basic,” Boudreau explained. "Theres nothing really extravagant with what Darryls doing. They just do it well. They got the right personnel, theyve been through the wars, theyve won the Cup before with that group and they know how to do it. “Quite frankly, its the same system we use. Its layers of blocking, layers of having to go through guys when you come into [their] zone and the last six games theyve been very good at it.” Cracking the Kings sound defensive structure is one issue, but the bigger issue for the Ducks has been Jonathan Quick, who has reverted to his Conn Smythe form after a shaky start in the first round series against the San Jose Sharks. Quick has a .961 save percentage during the Kings current six game winning streak. “Yeah, hes played well, but we havent played our game,” said Perry. “We just have to be more determined.” Quick turned aside 36 of the 37 shots he faced on Monday night with the only puck to beat him deflecting in off defenceman Jake Muzzins skate. “Hes seeing a lot of pucks,” said Ducks forward Patrick Maroon, who was credited with Anaheims lone goal in Game 2, which came during a four-on-three power play. “Thats one of the problems here. Five-on-five we got to get in front of the net, get in his eyes, create more traffic and get in his head a little bit, because were not doing that. Were an outside team right now. We got to crash and bang, throw pucks at his feet and go to the net.” Jonas Hiller, who faced just 16 shots Monday night, suggests Anaheims current approach is actually helping Quick build even more confidence. “I know from experience that those are the nice games to play if you face a lot of shots and are able to see most of them,” said the Ducks goalie. “Quicks just playing a little better than I am right now. I think their first line is just a little bit better than our [top] line. We got to find a way to change that.” Scoring goals wasnt a problem for the Ducks during the regular season as they led the NHL in that category (3.21 per game). Perry finished second in the league in goal scoring behind only Alexander Ovechkin while Getzlaf posted a career-high 31 goals. Ten Ducks had 10 goals or more. So why has the potent Anaheim attack, become so punchless? It appears the challenge at the moment is more mental than physical. “I think guys are almost trying to do too much, myself included, trying maybe to push it a little too hard and making it unnatural,” said Matt Beleskey, who has two goals and two assists in four playoff games this spring while skating alongside Perry and Getzlaf. “The Kings are doing a pretty good job of boxing guys out, but its timing. You got to bear down and get there.” Dropping the first two games at home can shake the confidence of a team. But Boudreau downplayed the importance of home-ice advantage. He pointed out that the games between the Kings and Ducks have been close all season whether theyre played at the Honda Center, Staples Center or even Dodger Stadium. “To me, these games whether we play them here or frigging any stadium you want, its going to be a tough game or a one-goal game and its two teams just battling really hard,” Boudreau said. “The difference is they scored an empty-net goal and we didnt. Thats the whole difference in the series right now.” Anaheim will need to win on enemy ice at least twice to keep their season alive. The Kings only have one regulation loss at the Staples Center in their last nine games there, but the Ducks dont see this as a daunting task. “Its tough to win in this building too and they did it twice,” said Beleskey standing in the Ducks dressing room. “Definitely not going to be that hard for us.” The Ducks believe one win can turn this series on its head. After all, the Kings stormed back against the Sharks in the first round. The Chicago Blackhawks erased an 0-2 deficit against the St. Louis Blues. Comebacks are all the rage in the NHL these days. “Were a confident group,” said Ducks defenceman Ben Lovejoy. "We know we can beat this team. We feel weve had two pretty even games … I truly believe that playoffs is all about momentum and right now we need to put a seed of doubt in their mind. And if we win that first game, if its 2-1 and we have momentum, we can do that. “As soon as we win one they remember that were a good team, we remember that were a good team and it puts doubt in their mind, but it all starts with us.” . — U.S. captain Tom Watson said Monday that Tiger Woods latest back injury “doesnt bode well right now” for Woods playing in the Ryder Cup. Tanaka had his unbeaten regular-season run snapped at 42 starts, allowing a career-high four runs in six innings, and the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Yankees 6-1 on Tuesday night. SAN JOSE, Calif. — Joe Pavelski was being too creative in the shootout. He needed something different this time. Pavelski scored in the shootout and Antti Niemi stopped all three attempts to help the San Jose Sharks beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 on Saturday night. “You dont get a chance to do very much,” Pavelski said. “Theres only a couple of moves you can do. You stop, the puck keeps moving, slow.” Logan Couture scored his first goal in eight games. Patrick Marleau and Marty Havlat also scored for the Sharks, who finished a season-long five-game homestand unbeaten and won their eighth in nine overall. The Sharks got a scare when Joe Thornton caught a puck over his left eye. He was back on the ice after getting stitched up. “You hope its not serious and when we saw where it was, we knew hed be back,” Marleau said. “He played with one eye for the most start.” Thornton wasnt making too much of it. “I think it was just a ricochet. Im not sure if somebody tipped it or not, but it caught me right on,” he said. “I just came in and got some stitches. But Im fine. Its what hockey players do. They get bumps and bruises and they come back out.” Corey Perry, Alex Grant and Ben Lovejoy scored for the Ducks, who had won three of their past four. “We kept coming back at them,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “We were always within reach. If we scored one, wed score two. We had our opportunities.” Niemi stopped 28 of 31 shots for his 15th win. Jonas Hiller saved 32 shots in taking the loss. The Ducks have lost six of their past seven road games. Lovejoy tied it at 16:54 of the third with his first goal of the season, though he has three points in his past four games. Nick Bonino won a faceoff in the Sharks zone, tapped the puck to Lovejoy, who shot it to the right corner. “Its good to win but we made a lot of mistakes,” Couture said. “After losing a faceooff we need to get into the shooting lanes.ddddddddddddWe need to do our job.” Hiller stopped all 12 shots he faced in the first period, including several outstanding saves. Perry gave the Ducks the early advantage with a shot into the upper right corner 5:56 into the game. Ryan Getzlaf gave him a terrific pass to set up the goal. Niemi had a solid second period, allowing the Sharks to take the lead. Couture tied the game at 4:16 of the second. He redirected a shot from Marc-Edouard Vlasic over Hillers glove. The goal ended a season-long goal scoring drought for the centre. The Sharks took advantage of a poor pass from Hiller to score an easy goal midway through the period for the go-ahead goal. Hiller came out of the net to clear the puck, but flared it to Marleaus stick, who played give-and-go with Thornton and scored into an empty net at 10:13. Havlat picked up a rebounded shot and tipped it into the net with less than a minute remaining to put the Sharks up 3-1 entering the final period. “Thats a lot of character when you have guys step up in the third period like that, down two goals against a pretty good hockey team and able to fight back and get that point,” Getzlaf said. Grant, playing in his first NHL game, scored his first goal with 7:10 remaining in the third to bring the Ducks within 3-2. The defenceman took a shot that Niemi blocked with his right shoulder, but was unable to control as it flipped in the air behind him and into the net. NOTES: Getzlaf recorded a point in his 10th straight game, his longest streak in four years. … The Sharks and Ducks played the first of five games in their season series. It was their first meeting since March 27, a span of 249 days. … Hiller went down for a few moments after teammate Kyle Palmieri accidentally hit him in the side of the head. … Ducks F Dustin Penner has eight points in his past six games. … Mike Brown recorded his first assist of the season and his second point. ’ ’ ’

TORONTO – Dustin McGowan is determined to get to the bottom of the fatigue which plagues him during his starts. In-between outings, hell become better acquainted with a treadmill. “Actually Im going to start running a lot more, just see if that helps with endurance,” McGowan told TSN.ca on Friday afternoon. If only it was that simple. McGowan is a type 1 diabetic. “I think a lot of it, for me, Im starting to figure out its got something to do with my blood sugar,” he said. “Its so high.” To put it into context, according to the National Institute of Health, the normal blood glucose level for a non-diabetic should be less than 125 milligrams per deciliter. Once McGowan takes the mound, his readings skyrocket to disconcerting levels. “I get so anxious and stressful and nervous leading up to the game,” said McGowan. “Before I go out, Ill be fine, itll be 140, 150 and, without drinking anything or eating anything after I come out of the game, its over 300.” In the ongoing effort to find a solution, hes going to take in insulin while hes pitching. “I may start wearing my pump during the game just to see if (the blood sugar) levels out a little bit,” he said. McGowans injury history is well documented. He was a mainstay in the Blue Jays starting rotation in 2007, winning 12 games in a breakout season, and appeared poised to live up to the promise his status as a top prospect suggested. After remaining healthy through the first half of the 2008 season, he was forced from a July start with shoulder pain. Three weeks later, McGowans season was over when it was announced he would need surgery to repair his labrum. He had knee surgery in 2009 and a second shoulder procedure in 2010, this time to fix a torn rotator cuff. After returning to the rotation in September 2011 and making five starts at the end of the season, he experienced more shoulder problems in 2012, which led to another surgery. McGowan doesnt blame diabetes for his injuries but he believes the condition has hampered his ability to make hastened returns. “Recovery has been a pain because even when I get a blister or a cut, it takes forever to heal,” said McGowan. “I can only imagine after getting my arm sewn back together what it was like. In that way, its been brutal but I dont think its done anything to cause me to get hurt. Its just the healing process takes a little longer.” Finally last season, McGowan rejoined the club in June and settled into a relief role in which he posted a 2.45 ERA in 25 appearances. His return to the rotation this year is a testament to his perseverance but also a reflection of the Blue Jays desperation. There were no other immediate options after Ervin Santana spurned the club for the greener pastures of the National League and a contract with the Atlanta Braves. McGowan would like his blood sugar level to be between 150 and 160 milligrams per deciliter while hes pitching. Hes as concerned with the reading dropping too low as he is with disturbing spikes and so hes okay with a slightly higher count than what a non-diabetic would expect. “When youre doing exercises, its supposed to go down,” said McGowan. “I think just because of the stressful situations pitching and stuff like that, it just causes it to boot up a little bit.” Manager John Gibbons is openly musing about using a six-man starting rotation with the schedule about to get busier. The Jays have one off-day between the start of the next road trip, Tuesday in Kansas City, and Sunday, June 1. There are only four off-days remaining between now and the All-Star Break in mid-July. After admitting hed wondered to himself if a return to the bullpen makes the most sense, McGowan wants to clarify: he wishes to remain in the starting rotation. “Its something Im not going to shy away from,” said McGowan. “Im going to do it until they take it out of my hand.” . “I cant say much, we agreed not to say much, but talks are ongoing and Andrei wants to stay in Montreal,” agent and former NHL player Sergei Berezin told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on ESPN.com on Friday. Costa was originally signed as an undrafted rookie in 2010, and eventually won the starting job.dddddddddddd Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said in a statement that Costa was a “physical” centre who will provide “competition” for the starting job. DONETSK, Ukraine - Only one goal counted, and it belonged to Wayne Rooney. The England striker returned from a two-match suspension to head in the lone goal Tuesday and give his team a 1-0 win over Ukraine and a spot in the European Championship quarterfinals. The co-host Ukrainians, however, will leave the tournament knowing that things could have been different. Needing a win to advance, the Ukrainians thought they had equalized in the 62nd minute when Marko Devics looping shot appeared to cross the line before it was hooked clear by England defender John Terry. But the goal was not awarded by the referee or his extra assistant, who was half-standing on the field only a few meters from the post. “The goal that wasnt given really changed our plan because if it was given, I think the whole game could have looked another way,” Ukraine captain Andriy Shevchenko said through an interpreter. “We tried to give Ukraine a gift but we werent able to do it.” Although a draw still would have eliminated them, the equalizer would have given the team hope knowing that another goal would put Ukraine through to the quarterfinals. “I was sad because the ball was in the goal by one meter,” Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin said. The controversy will likely add to the pressure on UEFA President Michel Platini to reverse his opposition to goal-line technology. It was Rooney, however, who did manage to put his team on the scoreboard. England captain Steven Gerrard whipped a cross into the penalty area that glanced off two defenders before Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov let it slip through his hands as he crouched to collect the ball. Rooney was primed at the far post and made it count. “I was always putting myself in goalscoring opportunities,” Rooney said. “I couldve done better with a couple more but I got the goal and its three points.” Rooney missed the first two Euro 2012 matches through suspension. He was sent off in the teams last qualifier in October, and received a three-match suspension that was eventually reduced to two. The goal was Rooneys first at a major tournament since scoring four at Euro 2004 as an 18-year-old rising star. He failed to find the net at both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, while England failed to even qualify for Euro 2008. “There was a lot of pressure on Wayne,” Gerrard said. “But he stood up and when we needed him he was there.” With the victory, England won Group D and will next face Italy in Kyiv on Sunday. France also advanced, despite losing to Sweden 2-0 in the other group match. Ukraine, however, will have to watch the rest of the tournament as spectators, just like co-host Poland. At the 2010 World Cup, England midfielder Frank Lampard was denied a goal that would have levelled the match against Germany at 2-2. England ended up losing 4-1. “To be successful you need a bit of luck,” Gerrard said. “Two years ago we were unlucky with Frank Lampard and we had to pack our bags.” England is now unbeaten in five matches under Roy Hodgson, who took over the team last month following Fabio Capellos resignation in February. “Most people didnt think wed get out of the group,” Hodgson said. "Weve won it on points instead of goal difference as well. This was an away game with a capital A. “There were (50,000) people in and only 4,000 brave England fans. When we needed a bit of luck, when the ball may have crossed the line, we got a bit of luck and went on to win the match.” Ukraine had never won at the Donbass Arena on four previous occasions, and failed to seize on its dominance when it mattered most. With their fans dominating the crowd and on the bench at the start due to a left knee injury, the Ukrainians were in control from the outset, far more confident on the ball and containing England inside its own half. But early efforts were from distance, with Denys Garmash and Yaroslav Rakitskiy striking over, while England midfielder Scott Parker had to throw his body into the path of Devics low shot. They were getting closer, though, and looking more even menacing going forward with Oleh Gusev getting into the penalty area and sending in a shot that just creep over Joe Harts goal. Before Rooney scored, England came close to testing Pyatov when Ashley Young sent in a low cross that was easily dealt with in the 11th minute. As Ukraine attacked the England goal, Rooney was quiet in the first half of his first competitive match in more than a month until he sent a free header wide in the 28th from Youngs cross. “It was a while since he played a competitive match,” Hodgson said of Rooney. “Every day helps him and helps us. The fact that he had 80 minutes today will give him confidence for the Italy game.” -—— Lineups: England: Joe Hart, Ashley Cole, Glen Johnson, Joleon Lescott, John Terry, Steven Gerrard, James Milner (Theo Walcott, 70), Scott Parker, Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 86), Danny Welbeck (Andy Carroll, 82). PHOENIX — The Colorado Rockies placed outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with left knee tendinitis and a sprained right ankle. Gonzalez left Fridays game at Arizona after going 0 for 3 with three strikeouts. It is his second trip to the DL this season after inflammation in his left index finger sidelined the slugger for five weeks. “You can see mental stress on him, you can see physical stress,” Rockies trainer Keith Dugger said. “He made the decision to take time off, so thats where we are right now. Were going to get that ankle right. We know hes got tendinitis, weve been dealing with it. We know it isnt going away overnight or even in a week.” Gonzalez is batting .238 with 11 homers and 38 RBIs in only 70 games this season. “We felt like it got to a point where it wasnt getting any better,” manager Walt Weiss said. “Defeating the purpose to send him out there … give him some time for those nagging injuries to calm down.” Weiss added that hed like to see Gonzalez play again this season, hopefully. The Rockies recalled Ben Paulsen from Triple-A Colorado Springs to replace Gonzalez on the roster, and Paulsen was in the lineup at first base on Sunday. Last-place Colorado, beset with injuries all season long, got more bad news before its series finale against the Diamondbacks. Left-hander Brett Anderson will see a spine surgeon on Monday in Scottsdale, Arizona, to address a bulging disk in his lower back. Anderson, who missed three months earlier this season with a broken left index finger, was placed on the DL on Wednesday. He is 1-3 with a 2.93 ERA in eight starts this season. “Hes having some issues, not so much back pain but pain going down his leg,” Dugger said. “Its not a quick fix by any means, even if we go the non-surgery route.” Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki remains on the disabled list with a left hip flexor strain but is feeling better, Dugger said. “He still has some on and off discomfort in the front of the hip there,” he said. Dugger said Tulowitzki could have a torn labrum in his hip. Hes still not ready for a rehab assignment despite having been out since July 22, though he is working out. The Milwaukee Bucks found out they were being sold. It turned out to be a big night for two teams headed in different directions with the regular season coming to a close. Mike Scott scored 17 points to lead Atlanta in a 111-103 win Wednesday, hours after Milwaukee owner Herb Kohl announced he was selling his team. Mike Muscala added 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting for the Hawks, who rallied from a 12-point deficit in the first half. “I think the defence after the first quarter really picked up. It was where we want it to be and need it to be,” coach Mike Budenholzer said. Atlanta is locked into the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs and a first-round date with the Indiana Pacers. Scott started for forward Paul Millsap, who was rested to get ready for the post-season. “We feel like we are playing about as well as we have played all year for the most part. So the regular season is done, we will take a couple days and get ready for Indiana,” forward Kyle Korver said. Brandon Knight scored 31 points to lead the Bucks, who finished an NBA-worst 15-67. Their dismal season is over, though there is more certainty about the teams future after the prospective new owners said they wanted to build a new arena in Milwaukee. Kohl came into the locker room and addressed the team before the game. Coach Larry Drew thinks his team may have been a little distracted, on top of playing the last game of the year. “I would like to think that the concentration was there, but I think I would be lying if I said it was,” he said. “This was a big day with all that has happened.” The NBA is expected to approve the estimated $550 million sale to New York investment firm executives Marc Lasry and Wesley Edens, who also committed $100 million toward a new arena to replace the BMO Harris Bradley Center. Kohl, a former U.S. senator, also promised to fork over $100 million for a new facility. Wearing a dark green suit to match the Bucks dominant team colour, Kohll received a standing ovation and watched about four rows from the floor at centre court as his team went out and scored 39 points in the first quarter, a season-high for the opening period.dddddddddddd But Atlanta took control in the second half, even if the team didnt have much at stake. The top goal was to stay sharp but injury-free, and Budenholzer limited the minutes for key players Korver, DeMarre Carroll and Jeff Teague on top of having Millsap sit out. The contest had the up-and-down feel of a playground pickup game at times, especially during a first half in which the Bucks shot 63 per cent to the Hawks 60. Atlanta trailed by as much as 12 in the first half before going up by double digits in the fourth quarter. “We just wanted to end the season playing good basketball,” Korver said. Atlantas second unit seemed to have more energy down the stretch in pulling past the Bucks. At one point, Ramon Sessions had his pass deflected in the backcourt and bounce past teammate Jeff Adrien, who momentarily froze. It was enough time for Cartier Martin to track down the loose ball and coast in for an uncontested layup during a 15-4 run that helped Hawks take a 97-87 lead with 6:54 left. Another second half during which the Bucks ran out of steam — a season-long issue. “We had some rough nights. This is a humbling experience,” said forward John Henson, who had 19 points. “I think for me and everybody on this team, Im pretty sure nobody imagined this could have happened.” Khris Middleton finished with 16 points and seven rebounds for Milwaukee. Six players scored in double figures for the Hawks. NOTES: The Hawks entered Wednesday having won six straight against the Bucks. … Teague finished with 11 points, extending his career-best streak of scoring in double figures to 12 straight games. … Atlanta has reached the playoffs for seven straight years, the longest active streak in the East. … Drew was the Hawks head coach from 2010-13. … G O.J.
