Téma: Jak postupovat / ull practice. Second-year Li Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Sports Network) – Italys Matteo Manassero closed with a four-under 68 Sunday to pick up a one-stroke win at the Malaysian Open. Manassero, who will turn 18 years old on Tuesday, finished his second European Tour title at 16-under-par 272. He also won the Castello Masters last year. “Its fantastic. It is a great feeling to have achieved two victories in 11 months of professional golf,” Manassero said. It was long Sunday for most of the field. Weather problems each of the first three days forced the completion of the third round into Sunday morning. Manassero played the last 27 holes of the tournament on Sunday. The 17-year-old polished off a five-under 67 in the third round to share the 54-hole lead with Alexander Noren at minus-12. Gregory Bourdy posted a 67 in the final round at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club to take second place at minus-15. Rory McIlory was in contention a week after shooting 80 in the final round at the Masters. That tough final round dropped him from the lead into a share of 15th place. McIlroy trailed by three strokes with four holes to play Sunday, but birdied 16 and 17, then could have won with an eagle on the par-five 18th. However, he took three shots to reach the putting surface, then three-putted for bogey to close a round of three-under 69. He finished in third at 14-under-par 274. World No. 1 Martin Kaymer had four birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey in an even-par round of 72. He shared ninth place at minus-eight. Newly crowned Masters champion Charl Schwartzel managed a two-under 70 on Sunday to finish tied for 11th at seven-under-par 281. Manassero did most of his damage on the back nine. He birdied the par-four second, from six feet out, to go with eight pars on the front nine. He made the turn one stroke out of the lead. That changed quickly though as Manassero holed out for eagle on the par-five 10th to move atop the leaderboard at 15-under. He came right back with an eight-foot birdie putt on the 11th to extend his margin to two strokes. Manassero tripped to a bogey on the 12th and was suddenly tied for the lead with Bourdy, who birdied three of four holes from the 12th. Bourdy parred his last three holes to end at minus-15. After a par on the 13th, Manassero got that lost stroke back with a 10-footer for birdie on the 14th. He again led by one, and it held up as he made par on the last four holes. “I believe in myself, but you never know when the week is going to come,” admitted Manassero. “You must every single week try to make that week happen. I would never think that in 11 months Id have two wins.” Bourdy totaled eight birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey in his round of 67. McIlroy collected three birdies in a four-hole stretch from the eighth to jump to 14-under. He was two back at that point, but he couldnt recover from a disastrous, three-putt double-bogey on the par-four 12th. The two are expected to clash Saturday as Mitchells Lions (8-3) visit the Eskimos (5-6) in the Albertan capital. The last time the B.C. Lions defensive lineman battled Edmonton, in a July loss at B.C. Place Stadium, he twisted Rottiers arm awkwardly after a play in the first half and received a two-game suspension. “Its football — it happens,” said Mitchell after practice Tuesday. “It was something that happened. I already was given a discipline and served it, so Im not worried about it no more.” Mitchell was not penalized during the game, but CFL commissioner Mark Cohon decided to hand him the longest suspension for an in-game incident. Mitchell launched an appeal that delayed his punishment, but the arbitration case was unsuccessful. Rottier was immediately sidelined with an elbow injury but is now back on Edmontons roster. Mitchell, a 27-year-old who is in his third season with the Lions, said he will take his usual “tough” approach to the game at Commonwealth Stadium. “Im not scheming any players,” he said. “Im not going to do nothing crazy. Ive gotta go against their whole offence.” Mitchell is not expecting a hostile response from the Eskimos, contending he would have received one in the second half of the previous meeting, or their fans. He believes the incident has had a positive effect on his career and shone a light on linemen who take considerable punishment on every play while playing critical roles, but often remain anonymous. “A lot of people that didnt know Khalif Mitchell now know Khalif Mitchell,” he said. "A lot of people that didnt pay attention to the line of scrimmage now pay attention to the line of scrimmage. “One thing I learned is that, even when things all around you are going bad, there are still things to look at if you look at each person.” He discovered that, contrary to what he thought, many people do like him. “It brought out the clarity in people,” he said. “When a lot of dark stuffs going around you, you start to see light come out brighter.” Rottier has expressed forgiveness publicly for Mitchell. The Lion said he had communication with Rottier during a disciplinary hearing with Cohon, but Mitchell does not see a need to speak to him again about the incident. Mitchell said he rarely speaks to opposing offensive linemen, although he did talk to some from Hamilton at dinner following a game and others from Saskatchewan Roughriders at a party. “Im not really looking at anything to say or justify any reasonings, or trying too have any revenge on anybody.dddddddddddd … Im not looking to expect anything.” Lions coach Mike Benevides said he has not offered Mitchell any special advice in wake of the previous games incident. The B.C. field boss indicated the team has moved past it. However, Benevides also indicated that he expects Mitchell, a self-taught classical pianist who is a personable, gentle giant off the field but physical force on it, to remain disciplined. “My only words to him were: Lets go play to win the game. Lets stay focused on what we need to do,” said Benevides. “That seems like an eternity (to) people who bring it up. But I know this: That the people around him and he himself have to focus on the right thing.” Mitchell expressed more concern about getting a win against the Eskimos after they upset the Lions in their first meeting at B.C. Place Stadium. “They came in here and they won a good game and a tough game,” said Mitchell. “But when we go back out there, were going to be better prepared for them.” Meanwhile, Benevides has some difficult roster decisions to make as the Lions seek their seventh win in the past eight games. Middle linebacker Solomon Elimimian, who returned to play out his option last week after unsuccessful tryouts with Minnesota and Cleveland of the NFL, had to be slotted somewhere, in accordance with league rules, by Tuesday. The Lions had five days to make a decision on him, and Tuesday was the deadline. Benevides said the club would fit him in somehow, but he did not know exactly where. The coach said he would leave the move up to general manager Wally Buono. Elimimian participated in a warmup Tuesday, but missed practice with a hamstring injury suffered with Minnesota. He said his hamstring is getting better, but he does not know when he can suit up for a full practice. Second-year Lion Adam Bighill is excelling at his former starting middle linebacker spot and appears likely to hold the position again Saturday. “The first place Ive gotta get (Elimimian) back to right away is special teams,” said Benevides. Running back Stu Foord also missed practice due to an ankle injury suffered in last weekends win over Toronto and is considered questionable. Benevides said there is a “distinct possibility” that Kierrie Johnson, out with a broken arm suffered after scoring a touchdown in early July against Saskatchewan, will be added to the roster. Notes: Three Lions took CFL player of the week honours announced Tuesday. Quarterback Travis Lulay took the offensive award while receiver Shawn Gore was named top Canadian and returner Tim Brown garnered the special teams honour. 20:37ET 18-09-12 cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ke it a 14-point game, and C The Montreal Canadiens head out to St Louis and Nashville for their final road trip before the Holiday break. This year the Canadiens are lucky when it comes to the holiday schedule, they have six days off during that stretch. “Never had a schedule like that before, but well take it” Rene Bourque said prior to leaving for St Louis. After starting the month of December strong with four consecutive wins, the Habs had a difficult time in their last five games going 2-3-0, but Michel Therrien feels his team is moving in the right direction. “Weve won two of the last three games and thats great for building our teams confidence,” he said. One of the challenges Therrien is facing right now is what to do with Daniel Briere. Briere has been held off the scoresheet for the past seven games and has recorded only five goals and five assists in 26 games. The Canadiens signed Briere during the off season to a two-year-deal worth $8 million. Therrien said last week that he expects more from him. “Daniels a great guy and I know he wants to produce more, but at a certain point I need to do whats best for the team,” Therrien said after practice. This comes after Briere earned only 4:27 minutes of ice time last game against the Phoenix Coyotes. The only other time Briere played less was on October 19 when he left the game against the Nashville Predators early after suffering a concussion. At the Canadiens practice,Briere was centering the fourth line with Michael Bournival and Travis Moen. Therrien would not confirm if this is the line-up he will use going into Thursday nights game in St Louis, but he feels Briere has been given ample opportunity. That was all they needed to beat the Detroit Pistons 99-79 and end a four-game losing streak. The Pistons led 53-51 at the half, but Chicago only allowed 26 second-half points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, as they pulled away for the easy win. “They made some shots in the first half, but I liked the way we were playing offensively,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. “In the second half, we got our defensive intensity going.” Chicagos defence was at its best in the fourth quarter, where the Pistons went scoreless on 10 straight possessions. Jonas Jerebkos jumper had pulled Detroit to 80-75 with 8:39 left, but the Bulls didnt allow another basket until Gigi Datomes jumper made it 99-77 with 1:31 to go. “This has been a tough road trip for us,” said Kirk Hinrich. "We played to our strengths tonight, we really competed defensively in the second half and we got one in the win column. Detroit shot 27.8 per cent in the second half, missed all six 3-point attempts, went 6 of 13 from the line and turned the ball over nine times. “They were obviously a lot better in the second half than they had been in the first half,” Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks said. “We couldnt score the ball, and a lot of that was because of their defence.” Luol Deng led the Bulls with 27 points, while reserve Taj Gibson had a career-high 23. Tony Snell, making the first start of his career, added 13 points in 37 minutes. “When I heard I was in the starting lineup, I just told myself to play my game and not rush anything,” he said. “All the hours Ive put in, working hard in the gym, were so that Id be ready for this.” Rodney Stuckey finished with 25 off the bench for Detroit but no one else had more than 13. Josh Smith had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Andre Drummond had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons. Point guards Brandon Jennings and Will Bynnum combined for two points on 1-for-8 shooting in the second half.dddddddddddd “We certainly needed some scoring from Brandon and Bynum,” Cheeks said. “If you dont get anything from either of them, you are going to have a hard time.” Neither team played much defence in the first half, with the Pistons shooting 58.5 per cent to Chicagos 52.4 per cent. Stuckey and Gibson both had 15 points off the bench, and each team also had two starters in double figures by halftime. Six quick points from Joakim Noah helped Chicago put together a 18-8 run that gave them 69-61 late in the third. The Bulls had three straight possessions with a chance to move the margin into double figures, but two misses on open jumpers and a fast-break turnover let the Pistons stay close. Stuckey finally ended Detroits drought with a pair of baskets, and the Pistons pulled to 69-65. The fight-back was short-lived, though, and the Bulls had the advantage back to 76-68 by quarters end. The margin stayed in the high single figures for the early part of the fourth, but Detroit started to struggle when Cheeks took Stuckey out of the game. It was 86-75 when Stuckey returned with five minutes left, but he couldnt help. Hinrich immediately made a three-point play to make it a 14-point game, and Chicago led by as many as 24 down the stretch. “They are tough, but we adjusted to the physical play of the game,” Thibodeau said. “When the ball was in the air, we got bodies on people and fought for the ball.” NOTES: Michigan native Floyd Mayweather Jr. was seated at courtside, a few seats away from Pistons owner Tom Gores. Mayweather, accompanied by a large entourage, engaged in some friendly banter with Bulls players, including an imitation of Joakim Noahs unusual free-throw style. He also got a large ovation when he was shown on the scoreboard during the fourth quarter. … Stuckey leads the Eastern Conference with points off the bench, coming into the game at 15.9 points. … Datome finished with four points on his 26th birthday. Téma: Jak postupovat / ttawa Senators fo MELBOURNE, Australia — McLaren driver Jenson Button set the fastest time in Fridays first practice session for Formula Ones season-opening Australian Grand Prix, ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton. Button was a quarter of a second faster than Hamilton with Mercedes Michael Schumacher and Ferraris Fernando Alonso next on the timesheets. Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel was 11th, more than two seconds off the pace in his Red Bull. His teammate, local hope Mark Webber, fared better and was fifth fastest. The track was wet from morning rain and much of the session was conducted on intermediate tires, but drivers were able to switch to the slick dry-weather tires for the final half hour. Ferraris Felipe Massa spun off the track into a gravel trap to prematurely end his session, but the first practice was otherwise free of incident. Mercedes Nico Rosberg was sixth fastest, and Toro Rossos Daniel Ricciardo seventh in front of his home crowd. Williams Pastor Maldonado had the eighth-fastest time, ahead of Lotus Kimi Raikkonen, with Saubers Kamui Kobayashi rounding out the top ten. Raikkonen, back in Formula One after a two-year break, only emerged for his flying laps in the final 15 minutes of the session due to a steering problem on his Lotus. The leading times set by the McLaren was testament to the more settled preseason campaign the team has enjoyed going into 2012, after the difficulties of the previous season when it had to overhaul its design just before the opening race. Schumacher, still looking for his first podium position since his comeback to the sport, had reason for optimism after his third placing. The legality of Mercedes rear wing had been questioned by some rival teams, but was approved by the sports governing body, the FIA. That leaves other teams having to play catch-up to come up with a similar design, which has slots on the underside of the wing to increase downforce without sacrificing straight-line speed. The HRT teams start to the season lived down to expectations, having not been ready for any of the preseason testing sessions. Narain Karthikeyan ventured briefly on track before suffering a failure and coasting to a stop, while the car of Pedro de la Rosa was still being pieced together and took no part Friday. The team could not take part in last seasons Australian GP and will again face a struggle to qualify this year, as all cars must be within seven per cent of the fastest time in qualifying in order to take part. Marussia fared little better with Timo Glock more than seven seconds off the pace and rookie Charles Pic 12 seconds off Buttons time. Téma: Jak postupovat / se comments th BOSTON – It started with a torrent of hate. But P.K. Subban was feeling the love after the Canadiens disposed of the Boston Bruins. The charismatic Montreal defenceman, the target of racial abuse after his winning goal in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series, planted a kiss on broadcaster Pierre McGuire to wrap up their post-Game 7 interview Wednesday night. “Yeah baby,” said a jubilant Subban after McGuire congratulated him for reaching the Eastern Conference final, which starts Saturday in Montreal against the New York Rangers. More than a few hockey fans may have fallen for the underdog Habs after their performance against the big bad Bruins. The Canadiens are hard-working, proud and tenacious. “Its definitely a special team and if we didnt know it before the playoffs, we definitely know it now,” said forward Max Pacioretty, who bounced back from a slow start in the series. “I said when I got here, I just feel like this is a special team,” echoed forward Dale Weise, acquired from the Canucks on Feb. 3. "I was on Vancouver the year after they went to the Cup final, we won the Presidents Trophy — theres something about this team thats just special. “Were real resilient. When our backs are against the wall (and) we need a big performance, our big players show up. And weve got so much depth. I really like our team.” The Canadiens work ethic was eloquently voiced by coach Michel Therrien prior to Game 2, in words most saw as a prod at Thomas Vanek and other underachieving forwards. “One thing thats not negotiable with our team … work ethic is not negotiable, attitude is not negotiable and competing is not negotiable,” he said. “This is something we ask from every player on our hockey team. We have to make sure that everyone brings those elements to every single shift and every single game.” Therrien was rightly proud Wednesday. “This is a great accomplishment from that group. We just beat the best team in the league. We were down 3-2 (in the series) and we showed a lot of character, a lot of passion. To be able to win the series here in Boston, its a tough place for teams to come and play here. Im really proud about the performance of our players.” Carey Price was majestic in goal, with ice water in his veins. His rebound control was exceptional, he declined to bite on any of the Bruins forwards shake and bake, and he was there to clean up when a mess was left in front of him. He was unflappable. When the zombie apocalypse finally hits, those nearest Price will likely be thanking their lucky stars. The Habs star had plenty of help. Price faced 230 Bruins shots during the series with his team blocking another 146. Mike Weaver, all five foot 10 of him, stopped 20 of those. “A human wall,” said Weise. But as Price and Therrien noted, the Boston series win will be yesterdays news come the Eastern final. Montreal faces another Original six rival in the Rangers, who are coming off an emotional win of their own over Pittsburgh. And having survived Vezina Trophy finalist Tuukka Rask with Boston, the Canadiens now face Rangers stopper Henrik Lundqvist who strapped the Rangers on his back in the elimination game against the Penguins. Price and Lundqvist met at the Olympic final in Sochi, where the outclassed and depleted Swedes were beaten 3-0. King Henrik has a 13-11-2 career record against the Canadiens and has struggled in Montreal where he is 4-5-2 with a 3.87 goals-against average and .876 save percentage. That may explain why backup Cam Talbot played the two games at Montreal this season. Lundqvist has not played at the Bell Centre since a 4-3 shootout victory in March 2009. His last regulation victory there was a 5-3 decision in February 2008. His career save percentage against the Habs is .897. Price, meanwhile, is 8-5-1 with five shutouts and a .934 save percentage against the Rangers. Montreal finished four points ahead of New York in the regular season. The Canadiens blanked New York 2-0 in the Rangers home opener on Oct. 28, lost 1-0 at the Bell Centre on Nov. 16 and edged the visiting Rangers 1-0 in overtime on the final weekend of the season. Its the first playoff meeting between the two since 1996 when the Rangers defeated Montreal 4-2 in the Eastern Conference quarter-final. It marks their 15th post-season meeting, with each team having won seven times. And its the third playoff series between the two since the 1979 Stanley Cup final, won four games to one by Montreal. Téma: Jak postupovat / the calendar year. "Its a NEW YORK — The New York Rangers started the day eighth in the Eastern Conference. They finished it two spots higher and locked into a first-round playoff matchup with the Washington Capitals. In their final regular-season game, the Rangers beat the New Jersey Devils 4-0 on Saturday and jumped over the Ottawa Senators and the New York Islanders into sixth place. When Ottawa was beaten by Philadelphia on Saturday night, the Rangers knew they were there to stay. The Rangers win assured that New York wouldnt finish eighth and be forced to face the top-seeded Pittsburgh Penguins. Now they can look even higher. “If you start out in sixth, you could get home ice depending on what else happens. You never know,” said forward Brad Richards, who had two assists in his 900th NHL game. Last year, the Rangers finished with the best record in the East and knocked off Washington in a seven-game, second-round series before falling to New Jersey in the conference finals. Their next task is another meeting with Alex Ovechkin and the Southeast Division champion Capitals. Washington and the Rangers will be meeting in the playoffs for the fourth time in five years. “Its going to be a tough opponent,” Capitals forward Eric Fehr said of the Rangers after he scored the winning overtime goal against Boston on Saturday night. "We have a little bit of history with them. Weve played them a number of times. Its going to be a mans series, no question. “Theyve got a lot of big guys and they like to play physical. Its a good challenge for us.” Henrik Lundqvist made the latest playoff matchup possible as he stopped 20 New Jersey shots on Saturday and coasted to his second shutout of the season. Rick Nash scored two goals. “It was big for us,” said Nash, a first-year Ranger who is in the playoffs for the first time since 2009 while with Columbus. “We wanted to ride some momentum going into the playoffs, and I thought the guys had a great effort.” Derek Stepan and Ryan Callahan both had a goal and assist in the first period against New Jersey backup goalie Johan Hedberg, who gave Martin Brodeur a rare game off. One year after reaching the Stanley Cup finals, the Devils will head home early after failing to make the playoffs. Unsympathetic Rangers fans serenaded the Devils with chants of “Seasons Over” as the final minutes ticked down. “Definitely this is not a good feeling a year after we went to the finals,” forward Stephen Gionta said. “Not easy.” Lundqvist was hardly tested in earning his 45th NHL shutout. The Rangers, who wrapped up their third straight playoff berth with a win at Carolina on Thursday, went 10-3-1 in their final 14 games. Hedberg made 17 saves in the matchup of Swedish goalies. New Jersey was shut out for the fourth time, all in the final 12 games. “We were not good,” Devils coach Pete DeBoer said. "It was a bad situation that we did not handle well. “We played some good hockey in order to give ourselves the opportunity to bounce back, but we never found a streak.” Callahan picked up where he left off Thursday when he scored the overtime goal that got New York back into the post-season. The Rangers captain moved back and forth behind the New Jersey net and shifted the puck from backhand to forehand before throwing the puck out front to the waiting Stepan, who unleashed a lightning-fast one-timer that beat Hedberg just 2:37 in for his 18th goal. The pair teamed up again in the final minute of the period while Taylor Pyatt served a questionable hooking penalty. Stepan intercepted the puck from defenceman Marek Zidlicky and send a lead pass ahead to Callahan for the short-handed breakaway. Callahan darted from side to side as he raced in on Hedberg, and deked enough to open up the goalies pads to slip the puck in with 58.8 seconds left in the period. It was Callahans 16th goal of the season. “Its been fun so far,” Stepan said of playing with Callahan and Carl Hagelin. “Those two guys just work so hard, and when they get on pucks its hard to get it off their stick.” Just over 6 minutes in, while Hagelin was off for tripping, Callahan had another short-handed chance when he got past Ilya Kovalchuk in the New Jersey zone and came in alone on Hedberg, but he was denied at the right post. The Rangers looked much better while killing penalties than on their one power-play chance in the first. After taking a 7-1 lead in shots early in the period, New York finished with only a 9-8 edge. Nash garnered the Rangers third short-handed break of the game with 6:55 left in the second, but his rush was thwarted by the back-checking Kovalchuk, who got his stick in on Nashs hands — forcing the Rangers forward to his knees and having him push the puck wide of the net. Nash would connect with 2:37 remaining after the Rangers won a faceoff in the New Jersey end. Brad Richards sent a pass from behind the net out to Nash, who snapped off a wrist shot from the edge of the left circle for his 20th goal of the season. Nash made it 4-0 at 5:30 of the third when he whipped a shot from the slot past Hedberg off a feed from Mats Zuccarello. The chants of “We Want Marty” started after Callahans goal and grew even louder after Nash made it 2-0. The nearly 41-year-old Brodeur watched his teams final game of the season from the bench. It was the first time the longtime Devils No. 1 goalie served as the backup for a game at Madison Square Garden since May 1, 1992, in Game 7 of a first-round playoff series against the Rangers, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. NOTES: Nash reached 20 goals for the ninth straight season. … Richards has a six-game point streak (five goals, six assists). … The Devils finished 19-19-10 and 6-10-8 on the road. … Rangers LW Ryane Clowe sat out after being injured on Thursday. For the first time in nearly two years, the Raptors were without DeMar DeRozan, as their leading scorer watched on from Toronto, nursing a recently sprained left ankle. Not even 10 minutes after the final buzzer – Toronto defeating the red-hot Brooklyn Nets 104-103 Monday evening – Lowry had already spoken with his injured teammate, via FaceTime. The conversation went as follows: “I cant tell you [what he said],” Lowry informed the enquiring media. Lowry, in the middle of a career season, was all smiles after what may have been his best game as a Raptor. The win and the vindicating feeling that accompanied it in the Raptors locker room were nearly stolen from them. With 19 seconds remaining and the Nets up one, Lowry drove into Deron Williams, a moving target, and was whistled for an offensive foul. The controversial call, made by official Violet Palmer, was the latest in a series of questionable whistles. Lowry, along with coach Dwane Casey, was understandably irate. “Its her call,” Lowry said after the game. “She made a great call, I mean thats her call. Hey, she called it.” You can read between the lines. Down by three after Paul Pierce sunk a pair of free throws, John Salmons extended the game with a quick layup, leading to an inbound play that the Raptors were prepared for. “We knew exactly what they were going to run,” Casey said, crediting the teams scouting staff. “Our defence was set.” No excuses. They were missing their best player and on the road against an opponent that had won 10 of 11 games in the New Year, ttheir only loss coming to Toronto.dddddddddddd The officials were doing them no favours, but this, of course, is a very different Raptors team than the one that would cower in these very situations. Pattersons first instinct after swiping Williamss inbound pass was to find Lowry, a wise decision, and the Raptors point guard set him up for the winning 12-footer, less than a minute after he air-balled a three-pointer. Patterson started the game wearing a face-mask to protect his broken nose, but by the second half, he had tossed it away. He was putting it all out on the line, in more ways than one, when he made the biggest play of the night. “You know me,” Patterson joked. “Richard Sherman, Ed Reed, were all in the same category.” Sherman and the rest of the NFC champion Seattle Seahawks were in attendance for what turned out to be a playoff-type battle between two teams vying for top spot in the Atlantic. In a game that saw 18 lead changes and nine ties, the Raptors extended their cushion in the division to two and a half games. Theyre still the only team to defeat Brooklyn in the calendar year. “Its a division game, I think everyone knew how big the game was for us,” said Lowry, who took his game to another level in the absence of DeRozan, scoring 31 points to go along with seven assists and five steals. “For me personally I just wanted to try to do my best to keep my guys and keep our team together no matter what happened and try to win the game.” DeRozan, who sustained his injury in Saturdays loss to the Clippers, had missed just eight games in his four-and-a-half-year career prior to sitting out on Monday. Theres no timetable for his recovery and, while his teammates anxiously await his return, theyre not relying on it. Often, you can learn a lot about a team and its players when a significant cog is removed. The lesson on this night; the Raptors have an array of viable weapons and Lowry has become their heart and soul. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

After LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Blake Griffin had 27 points and 14 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Clippers made it consecutive 50-win seasons with a lacklustre 106-98 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night. The Clippers became the ninth NBA team to have different head coaches guide the club to 50 victories in back-to-back seasons. They reached the mark five games earlier under Doc Rivers than they did last season under Vinny Del Negro, when they set a franchise record with 56 wins and captured their first division title before losing to Memphis in the opening round of the playoffs. This is Rivers fifth 50-win season as a head coach, including four with Boston. Chris Paul had 14 points and seven assists for the Clippers, who have won 13 of 14 overall and a season-best eight straight at home. Griffin had his 29th consecutive game with at least 20 points, the longest streak by a Clippers player since the franchise relocated from San Diego in 1984-85. Ramon Sessions had a season-high 28 points for the Bucks, who have lost eight in a row and are a league-worst 13-58. They are 1-19 on the road since beating the Lakers by 15 points at Staples Center on New Years Eve — their only road win against a Western Conference team. Power forward Ersan Ilysova sat out on the second night of a back-to-back set because of a sore right ankle that has bothered him all season. Beleaguered coach Larry Drew used his 26th starting lineup, inserting Jeff Adrien in Ilysovas spot and Sessions at shooting guard because of rookie Nate Wolters broken left hand. It was the first start for both players since they joined the Bucks in a Feb. 20 trade that sent Luke Ridnour and Gary Neal to Charlotte. Sessions made his first six shots and finished 13 for 21 from the field, scoring 11 points during a 3:43 span down the stretch. Adrien had 14 points and seven rebounds. They were the 15th and 16th players to start a game for the Bucks this season. Los Angeles never trailed, extending its five-point halftime lead to 71-60 on Darren Collisons three-point play with 5:34 left in the third quarter. The Bucks got as close as 82-80 on back-to-back dunks 28 seconds apart by John Henson, but Glen Davis responded with consecutive layups and Jamal Crawford scored seven points during a 3:52 stretch, including a 3-pointer that gave Los Angeles a 99-92 edge with 3:08 to play. The Clippers built a 33-18 lead late in the first quarter after centre DeAndre Jordan and forward Matt Barnes got in early foul trouble. Jared Dudley, who spent the previous four games on the bench, provided a brief spark with a 17-footer and a 3-pointer 50 seconds apart to give Los Angeles a 45-38 lead with 8:03 left in the half. The Bucks have gone more than a year since the last time they won consecutive games — March 17-19, 2013, when they beat Orlando and Portland. Both games were in Milwaukee. NOTES: Los Angeles came in with the leagues best 3-point defence (33.1 per cent), and Milwaukee had the worst (38.4 per cent). Téma: Jak postupovat / case went to court LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Russ Smith really didnt care about being top scorer in his home finale with Louisville because passing to open teammates was the better choice. The star guard is showing he can be pass-first when needed. Just ask Cardinals forward Montrezl Harrell, who scored 20 points while Smith recorded a career-high 13 assists as No. 11 Louisville routed No. 19 Connecticut 81-48 on Saturday to claim a share of the American Athletic Conference championship. The Cardinals (26-5, 15-3) finished tied with No. 15 Cincinnati atop the league. A postgame coin flip went to Cincinnati and left Louisville with the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. The Cardinals still got to hoist a trophy thanks to Smiths generosity. “Russ does so much for our team,” said Harrell, who added 11 rebounds and several thunderous dunks. “He doesnt just worry about scoring. He had like (three) points tonight and 13 assists, so how does he not make us better? … Right now, hes just worried about us winning, and thats what we need.” Smiths performance was appreciated by a sellout crowd that gave him a standing ovation as he went to the bench with 4:22 left in the game. The reception capped a joyous day as he and fellow seniors Luke Hancock, Tim Henderson and Stephan Van Treese were honoured as the programs winningest class. Their achievements included winning last years NCAA championship. All played key roles in Saturdays 116th win together. Smith made just one of two shots but topped his previous assist high by two. Hancock added 16 points while Henderson added an early basket on feeds from Smith. Van Treese grabbed 13 rebounds. “It was just getting the ball to my teammates to get the ball movement going,” said Smith, whose audience included nine NBA scouts. “When I looked at the film after the first UConn game, I was very sloppy with the rock. I wasnt handling the ball as well as I should have. I negated any discrepancy about turning the ball over. I just kicked it out to other teammates.” Louisvilles defence, meanwhile, frustrated the Huskies (24-7, 12-6) into season lows in scoring and shooting (29.4 per cent) in completing the sweep. Their previous shooting low was 29.6 per cent in a loss to SMU. “I didnt see anything like this coming,” said UConn coach Kevin Ollie, whose team still earned the No. 4 seed. "And Im glad it came because now we know how tough we have to be to be a champion. “We werent tough enough. We werent together enough. Louisville took every opportunity to take advantage of it. … Thats what champions do.” Wayne Blackshear added 11 points and Chris Jones 10 as Louisville won this matchup between two of the past three NCAA champions. While the defending champion Cardinals werent always smooth in beating the Huskies, they shot 45 per cent (26 of 58) from the field and mounted a couple of second-half runs to put the game out of reach. DeAndre Daniels 17 points led UConn, which had its four-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 0-4 at the KFC Yum! Center. Senior guard Shabazz Napier managed nine points on 2-of-13 shooting just days after scoring 26 points including a career-best seven 3-pointers in a win over Rutgers, Emotion preceded the game as Louisville honoured the seniors who helped earn the schools third national championship last spring. Smith as expected drew the loudest cheers from a red-clad sellout crowd as a montage of his and teammates shining moments was played on the video screen, which included a shout-out from rapper Pit Bull. Louisvilles 30-18 lead at the break eventually grew to 34 with 91 seconds left to put fitting end to a fond farewell to the seniors — especially Smith. “Its a special class because for four years they totally did things for all the right reasons,” Louisville coach Rick Pitino said. Of Smith, he added, “how would you ever imagine Russ Smith knowing on Senior Night he would pass up all opportunities to score and get 13 assists? That shows you how much hes grown. If any pro scouts wondered tonight whether he could be a point guard, I think the thing is all closed.” . — Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was arrested outside Kansas City over the weekend on charges of speeding and possessing marijuana, throwing his status for a pivotal AFC West showdown against the Denver Broncos into question. The awards could reach $5 million for athletes with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrigs disease; $4 million for a death involving brain trauma; and $3 million for dementia cases. Under the payout formula, those maximum awards would go to players under 45, who would likely need more lifetime care. For a man in his early 60s, the awards top out at $3 million for ALS and $950,000 for Alzheimers disease. An 80-year-old with early dementia would get $25,000. Individual awards would also reflect how long the player spent in the NFL, unrelated medical issues and other factors. For instance, the award could be reduced significantly if someone had injuries from an unrelated stroke or car accident. Men without any neurological problems would get baseline testing, and could seek compensation if test reveal any problems. “This is an extraordinary settlement for retired NFL players and their families — from those who suffer with severe neurocognitive illnesses today, to those who are currently healthy but fear they may develop symptoms decades into the future,” lead players lawyers Christopher Seeger and Sol Weiss said in a statement. Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody of Philadelphia must still approve of the plan, and is expected to hold a fairness hearing later this year. Individual players can also opt out or object to the settlement, which followed five months of what a mediator called “vigorous” negotiations between the players and the NFL. “We of course support plaintiffs motions, and will await further direction from Judge Brody,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said. Players taking part will be encouraged to share their medical records with researchers studying brain injuries in football players, according to the extensive papers filed Monday. The plainttiffs include class representative Kevin Turner, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots and is now battling ALS.dddddddddddd “The compensation provided in this settlement will lift a heavy (financial) burden off of the men who are suffering,” Turner said. He hopes it will ensure that future players “do not suffer the way that many in my generation have.” The total settlement would include $675 million for compensatory claims, for players with neurological symptoms; $75 million for baseline testing for asymptomatic men; and $10 million for medical research and education. The NFL would also pay an additional $112 million to the players lawyers for their fees and expenses, for a total payout of nearly $900 million. The leagues annual revenues top $9 billion. More than 4,500 former players have filed suit, some accusing the league of fraud for its handling of concussions. They include Hall of Fame standout and former Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett, and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Jim McMahon, who suffers from dementia. Mediator Layn R. Phillips of California, a former U.S. judge, called the settlement fair, noting the risks to both sides if the case went to court. Players might have the case thrown out of court and their claims sent to league arbitration, while the NFL might have been forced to release internal files that reveal what it knew, when, about the consequences of playing after a concussion. “It was evident throughout the mediation process that plaintiffs counsel were prepared to litigate and try these cases, and face the risk of losing with no chance to recover for their labour or their expenses, if they were not able to achieve a fair and reasonable settlement result for the proposed class,” Phillips said. The money is expected to last for at least 65 years. About 19,000 retired players would be eligible to seek awards or medical testing, but current players are not part of the deal. Téma: Jak postupovat / back. The play wa HOUSTON — James Harden was out with a thumb injury, and then Dwight Howard got off to a slow start. It sure looked as if it was going to be a long night for the Houston Rockets. Then everything changed in the third quarter. Howard got back on track and a pair of role players stepped up to help Houston rally for a 97-90 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday. The Rockets trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half before scoring 33 in the third to go on top. San Antonio used an 11-3 spurt to pull within two in the final minutes, but Howard and Jeremy Lin helped Houston hold on for the win. “We just kept grinding it out,” Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. “We changed a couple of things defensively and the guys kind of dug in and got stops.” Howard had 23 points and 16 rebounds for Houston, which enjoyed a 55-39 advantage on the glass. Terrence Jones scored 21 points and Lin added 18 points and eight assists while starting in Hardens spot. Harden, who leads the team with 23.7 points a game, was out with a bruised left thumb. “I know I missed a lot of shots early,” Howard said. “I didnt lose focus. I got a little frustrated because I wanted to make those shots, especially against Tim (Duncan). But I just tried to stick with it and show the team that no matter what Im going to battle.” Boris Diaw scored a season-high 22 points for the Spurs, and he also had 11 rebounds. Tony Parker added 17 points and Duncan had 12 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks. Houston was clinging to a 90-88 lead with less than two minutes left when Howard had a dunk and Lin made a jumper. Duncan had a layup on the other end, but Lin sunk a pair of free throws to secure the victory. Houston has won all three meetings with the Southwest Division-leading Spurs to secure the season series for the first time since 1996-97. They have one scheduled game left on April 14 in Houston. San Antonios 90-point performance ended a streak of 15 straight games with at least 100 points and sent the Spurs to consecutive losses for the first time this season. The last time they were held below 100 was a 111-98 loss to Houston on Christmas Day. The Spurs got within six on a hook shot by Diaw early in the fourth quarter. Lin then scored five quick points to extend Houstons lead to 81-70. Houston was up by four points with four minutes left in the third quarter when San Antonio resorted to the “Hack-a-Howard” defence, fouling the centre every time the Rockets got the ball. Howard made 13 of 25 foul shots on the night, leaving him at 52.2 per cent from the line for the season. “I figured they were going to do it,” he said. “Im just glad I made most of them.” Duncan lamented that the tactic backfired for the Spurs. “Thats what he had to do to get us out of it,” Duncan said. “He made free throws and he hurt us with them.” The Spurs employed the strategy on eight straight possessions, with Howard making 10 foul shots while they had six points as Houston extended its lead to 70-62. Diaw made a jump shot at the end of the third quarter to cut Houstons lead to 72-64 entering the fourth. The Rockets opened the second half with an 11-2 run, capped by a two-handed dunk by Howard, to take their first lead of the game at 50-48. Lin started the run with a 3-pointer and also had two free throws in the surge. Manu Ginobili made four free throws for San Antonio before Houston scored six straight points to take a 56-52 lead. Ginobili and Chandler Parsons then exchanged rim-rattling dunks in rapid succession. The 36-year-old Ginobili injured himself on his jam and was soon limping and holding his upper left leg. He remained in the game for a bit before walking off the court and into the locker room at the next timeout. The team said he had tightness in his left hamstring. He missed time earlier this month with the same problem. San Antonio led by 10 points in the second quarter before Howard made his first basket of the night after starting the game 0 for 8. The bucket was the first of five straight points for Howard with San Antonios only points in that stretch coming on a layup by Marco Belinelli, helping Houston close to 46-39 at halftime. Houston struggled early without Harden and San Antonio jumped to a 9-0 lead thanks to five points from Diaw. The Spurs pushed the lead to 21-6 with about five minutes left in the first. They were certainly happy to wrap it up Monday night instead of waiting until Wednesday to learn their fate. Chandler Parsons scored 21 points and Dwight Howard and Terrence Jones added 20 apiece to lift the Rockets to a 104-98 win over the San Antonio Spurs. The victory gave No. 4 seed Houston home-court advantage in their first-round playoff series with Portland. “We fought hard for it,” coach Kevin McHale said. “It took a little longer than I hoped, but we knew we had to get 54 wins and we got there with one to spare. Im glad we didnt have to wait until Wednesday to try and get it.” James Harden agreed. “We wanted to come out here and take care of business and not rely on our last game on the road,” Harden said. San Antonio used a big run at the beginning of the fourth quarter to go on top and was up by three later in the period when Houston scored eight straight to regain the lead at 95-90. A layup by Jeff Ayres got the Spurs within four points before Harden knocked down a long 2-pointer with less than a minute left to make it 100-94. Marco Belinelli had 17 points to lead the Spurs, who limited the minutes of stars Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili with their top seed in the Western Conference playoffs already secure. Duncan had 12 points in less than 30 minutes, Parker scored 10 in about 25 and Ginobili had 10 in about 22. “We definitely did what we wanted to do,” Parker said. “We were able to play everybody — no injuries — and we got a good sweat out of it. We did some good stuff and Houston got the win at the end.” Harden added 16 points with seven assists for the Rockets, who swept the four-game series this season with San Antonio. Howard had 17 rebounds and Jones pulled down 11 for Houston. It was the second game back for Howard after he sat out the previous eight because of a left ankle strain. “I feel like I was in a better rhythm, but Im going to continue to get in shape, continue to do whatever I can to get my wind back so I can do more things on the flooor.dddddddddddd” The Spurs opened the fourth quarter with a 14-4 run to go on top 82-80 for their first lead since the first quarter. Belinelli got that run going with a 3-pointer and finished it with a jump shot. Houston missed five shots, including two layups as San Antonio took the lead. A layup by Parker cut Houstons lead to three points with about eight minutes left in the third quarter. The Rockets then used a 7-2 run to push their advantage to 64-56. Parsons started the run with a 3-pointer and Jones did the rest, starting with a tip-in before capping it with a soaring, one-handed alley-oop dunk on a pass from Harden. The Rockets scored seven straight points later in the quarter to push its lead to 14, but San Antonio scored the last six points of the quarter with four from Ginobili to cut the lead to 76-68 entering the fourth quarter. Houston led by nine after the first quarter and scored the first five points of the second quarter to extend its lead to 35-21. The Spurs had cut into the lead midway through the quarter and got within 41-36 with about five minutes left in the half after four quick points by Duncan. An alley-oop dunk by Duncan about three minutes later cut Houstons lead to 48-40 late in the second quarter. Harden got miffed at Ginobilis physical defence after that and put his left shoulder into him and knocked him to the ground as he drove down the court. That play was initially ruled a flagrant foul on Harden, causing him to yell and curse at the officials as Patrick Beverley held him back. The play was reviewed and knocked down to a personal foul, but Harden received a technical for his behaviour after the call. Ginobili made the free throw and Boris Diaws hook shot got San Antonio within five, but Howard reverse layup left the Rockets ahead 50-43 at halftime. NOTES: Duncan received a technical in the first quarter when he knocked Beverley down after the guard was called for a foul on Duncan. … Howard got a technical midway through the third quarter when he seemingly inadvertently slapped Ginobili in the face at the end of a play. … San Antonios Matt Bonner missed the game because of food poisoning. … Francisco Garcia (sore back) and Parsons (sore wrist and hip) returned after missing the last game with injuries. Téma: Jak postupovat / er, who play ARLINGTON, Texas — Athletics right-hander A.J. Griffin is scheduled to have elbow surgery Wednesday, and will miss the entire season with fellow third-year starter Jarrod Parker. “We were hoping that wasnt going to be the case,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said before Tuesdays game in Texas. “Losing two guys like that for the entire season is a difficult blow. Ones a blow, two is tough. You move on, but you certainly have a lot of sympathy for the two guys that are having to go through that, because theyve meant so much to this team over the last couple of years.” Parker, who had been expected to be Oaklands opening day starter, had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow during spring training. Griffin will have the surgery after getting a second opinion Tuesday from Dr. Thomas Mehlhoff in Houston. Melvin said he didnt know the specifics of the surgery Griffin will have or how extensive it would be. He had spoken only briefly to Griffin. “Hes always pretty happy-go-lucky, in good spirits,” Melvin said. “I think the fact that hes having it done this early gives him a light at the end of the tunnel to pitch next season. The longer that goes on, the more difficult it is to come back and get semi-close to a full season. Hes looking at it very positively.” Parker and Griffin combined for 26 victories last season. Griffin was 14-10 with a 3.83 ERA last season after making his major league debut in 2012 going 7-1 with a 3.06 ERA in 15 starts for the As. Parker went 13-8 in 2012, and was 12-8 last season. A noon downpour turned the 2.25-mile, 13-turn circuit into a slippery strand of roadway, but Bourdais proved to be the best on rain tires. The French driver made it through the first two qualifying rounds and into the Fast Six.With the Los Angeles Kings on the verge of winning the Stanley Cup with a 3-0 series lead over the New York Rangers, the debate has begun as to whom should win the Conn Smythe Trophy for this years playoffs. Unlike in 2012 when the Kings last won the Cup, there is no obvious choice for the most valuable player in the playoffs. That year, goaltender Jonathan Quick posted a 16-4 record with a .946 save percentage, 1.41 goals-against-average and three shutouts en route to winning the award. Quick is again a candidate to win this year, however he may not be the favourite. In 24 playoff games, Quick has a 15-9 record, a .910 save percentage and 2.69 goals against average. He also has two shutouts in the playoffs, including one against the Rangers in Game 3. The Kings have used a high-scoring offence to get within a game of winning the Stanley Cup this season. Their 84 goals in the playoffs are 24 more than the next-best Rangers. Leading the way on offence is Anze Kopitar, who leads in scoring with 26 points in 24 playoff games. Kopitars 21 assists in this years run sits second in Kings history, behind only Wayne Gretzkys 25 helpers in 1993. However, Kopitar has just five goals, while nine of his assists have come on Marion Gaborik goals. Gaborik, acquired by the Kings on trade deadline day from the Columbus Blue Jackets, leads the playoffs in goals with 13. His finest game of the playoffs ccame in the second round against the Anaheim Ducks, when he scored with seven seconds left in regulation to tie the game and scored again in overtime to take the series opener.dddddddddddd “Mr. Game 7,” Justin Williams, also has an overtime winner on his playoff resume this year. Williams scored to lift the Kings over the Rangers in Game 1 — one of eight goals hes scored in the playoffs. An emotional leader for the team, Williams is tied for second in playoff scoring with 24 points and leads the team with a plus-14 rating. He also has six points through three Stanley Cup Final games. Tied with Williams at 24 points is forward Jeff Carter, who played a similar role to Gaborik in 2012 after being acquired mid-season from the Blue Jackets. Carter has 10 goals in these playoffs, including a team-high four on the power play. However, hurting Carters campaign is his plus-five rating. If any defenceman is to win the Conn Smythe Trophy for the Kings, it would likely be Drew Doughty, who leads the Kings blue line with 17 points and has been their top defenceman throughout the playoffs, averaging over 28 minutes of ice-time per game. With multiple options available, the Conn Smythe Trophy debate may come down to the Kings final victory. Until then, who do you believe will be named the most valuable player should the Kings defeat the Rangers? As always, its Your! Call. Téma: Jak postupovat / nesota called an upp MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United manager David Moyes is hopeful that Wayne Rooney will be back over the Christmas period after the England striker missed the League Cup quarterfinal win over Stoke on Wednesday night. Rooney was not included in the squad that won 2-0 at Stoke to advance to the last four due to an unspecified injury. Rooney was withdrawn from Uniteds match at Aston Villa in the Premier League last weekend “although there has been no confirmation as to the extent of the problem,” United said. With United already 10 points behind leader Arsenal in the league standings and Robin van Persie also sidelined with a thigh injury, Rooneys injury comes at a bad time for United. The club plays four league games between Dec. 21 and Jan. 1. When asked whether Rooney would be fit over the festive period, Moyes said: “We hope so.” . |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ackersofficialshop.com LONDON — Usually Friday night is one the quietest times in the frenzied world of the English Premier League. Players can be found on gaming consoles in hotel rooms on the eve of games, or resting at home in anticipation of a Sunday game. But the pre-game calm will be shattered by the closing of the winter transfer window on Friday, with clubs racing to sign reinforcements or offload rejects for the final time this season. Here are five things to know about the transfer deadline-day and the weekends Premier League matches: CLASH OF THE CHALLENGERSManchester City and Chelsea will be relieved their fixture has been shunted back to Monday, minimizing any disruption for their top-of-the-table meeting. “Its the ultimate test,” Chelsea defender Gary Cahill said. “Its going to be a really, really tough game.” The City squad hardly needs much tinkering. Manuel Pellegrinis side took its goal tally this season to 115 in all competitions with a 5-1 thumping of Tottenham that took them back to the Premier League summit. At the same time, though, Chelsea was being frustrated by West Ham — drawing 0-0 — and travels to the Etihad three points behind City. The game pits the stingiest defence — Chelsea has conceded 20 in 23 — against the leagues most prolific attack — City has scored 68 in 23. “As a collective unit, as a whole team, were working really hard defensively, not just at the back,” Cahill said. Chelsea got the better of City in their last clash, winning 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in October. ARSENAL BLIPBeing knocked off the top has taken the wind out of Arsenals title charge. And after being held at Southampton, the Gunners host a resurgent Crystal Palace on Sunday. “The kind of performance we delivered at Southampton will not move us forward, so lets focus to come back on Sunday and produce a good performance,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. By then will there be any new faces in an Arsenal side looking to produce a first trophy since 2005? Its unclear. “Are we active? Yes. Are we close to sign anybody? No,” Wenger said on Thursday. “There is not long now, that is true.” Top of the target list is Julian Draxler, but Schalke doesnt seem to be a willing seller. Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt said he was “very convinced” the 20-year-old attacking midfielder will remain at the German club for the rest of the season. Arsenal will be without midfielders Jack Wilshere, who has an ankle problem, and Aaron Ramsey, who faces several weeks out with a thigh injury. LEAKY TOTTENHAMTottenham was brought down to earth with a bang by City on Wednesday as Tim Sherwoods unbeaten start as manager in the league ended. The north London club, which has conceded 11 goals to City this season, has what seems to be an easy trip to Hull on Saturday. “We have to be positive because we are still fifth, three points behind Liverpool,” goalkeeper Hugo Lloris said. “So it is open. We just need to be focused.” NORTH-EAST DERBYNewcastle is preparing for the derby against Sunderland on Saturday still trying to replace Yohan Cabaye, having received more than $27 million for the midfielder from Paris Saint-Germain this week. Manager Alan Pardew is waiting for a bid for Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier to be accepted. “He has tremendous creative technical ability,” Pardew said. Sunderland, which is out of the relegation zone for the first time since August, signed Argentina striker Ignacio Scocco on Thursday from Internacional. MOYES EYES MOMENTUMManchester United is chasing its first back-to-back league wins in a month when the champions face Stoke on Saturday still in seventh place. David Moyes push for the top four is being helped by how easily record-signing Juan Mata slotted into the team for a 2-0 win over Cardiff on Tuesday after joining from Chelsea. “Juan looked like he had been here for years,” winger Ashley Young said. “He had only been training for two days and it was his first game but he has gelled straight away.” . Now shes ready to make waves in the U.S. Pace shot a 3-under 68 on Saturday to grab a share of the third-round lead with Laura Diaz in the Marathon Classic. Téma: Jak postupovat / ne back from the p RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — President Dilma Rousseff appealed to Brazilians to support the World Cup, using a nationally televised address less than two days before the tournament starts to rebuke the “pessimists” who complain the country shouldnt be hosting the event. Brazils World Cup preparations have stoked countless protests from those angered by the billions spent on the event while the quality of public services in the health, education, security and transport spheres is lacking. In a pre-taped speech aired during prime time Tuesday night, Rousseff called on all Brazilians to back the national team regardless of their political persuasion or whether they fully agree with the nation hosting the event. “Im certain that in the 12 host cities, visitors are going to mix with a happy, generous and hospitable people, and be impressed by a nation full of natural beauty and which fights each day to become more equal,” she said, referring to sharp drops in poverty that Brazil has seen in the past decade under Workers Party leadership. Rousseff also defended the $11.5 billion spent on the Cup. Three out of every four Brazilians polled say they are convinced that corruption has tinged the myriad works related to the Cup. An Associated Press investigation earlier this year found that big construction firms responsible for building the bulk of the stadiums, roads and other works had dramatically increased their campaign contributions since Brazil was named as the host of this years Cup. Much of that money was funneled to Rousseffs ruling Workers Party though spending also went to the opposition. In one case, top builder Andrade Gutierrez, which has helped build or renovate four stadiums, hiked campaign contributions 500-fold from one election to the next after it was determined which 12 cities would host matches. That stoked anger and increased suspicions about collusion between politicians and the big builders — especially after reports from government auditors began to surface, indicating massive cost overruns along with allegations of price-gouging, principally in the building of stadiums. For instance, the cost of the stadium in Brasilia, a city with no major professional soccer team, has nearly tripled to $900 million from original price estimates published by the government. “Have no doubt, the accounts of the Cup are being meticulously analyzed by auditing agencies,” Rousseff said. “If there exists any irregularity, those responsible will receive the maximum punishment.” About half of Brazilians polled have said theyre against even hosting the World Cup and the mood is mixed about the event just days before it starts. That was once unthinkable for a nation that embodies soccer like no other, the country that has won the World Cup a record five times. However, many Cup watchers also think that if the Brazilian team gets on a roll and starts winning, the mood could quickly pivot and the nation could show the world a celebration worthy of its international reputation as a land of free-wheeling festivals and easy going, friendly people. Rousseff said that “for any nation, organizing a Cup is like taking part in a tough — and many times painful — game.” The leader rebuked those who argue Brazil has spent too much on the Cup, saying that since 2010, the government has spent more than 200 times what it invested in stadiums on education and health care systems. Adding to fears of chaos during the Cup, subway worker unions in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro were both expected to announce decisions soon on whether they would call transportation strikes for the coming days. Rousseff, whose poll numbers are slipping ahead of an October political election, concluded her speech by urging all Brazilians to rally around their team, whom she addressed directly. “Beneath those green and canary jerseys, you embody a powerful legacy of the Brazilian people. The national team represents nationality,” she said. “Its above governments, parties and interests of any group.” . Goals from Toni Kroos, Mario Goetze and Franck Ribery sealed the unbeaten defending champions 24th German title with seven games to spare, bettering the mark set in last years record-breaking campaign by one game. Adrian Ramos pulled one back from the penalty spot for Hertha, but there was to be no denying Pep Guardiola his first Bundesliga title in his first season as coach. “We worked very hard for this title. When you win by 25 points people can think its easy. But its not easy, especially after the last season with three titles,” the Spaniard said. “When you win 19 games one after the other, it speaks for the mentality of the team.” Bayerns 19th consecutive win, its 10th consecutive victory away from home, and its unbeaten run of 52 games are all Bundesliga records. Bayern finished 25 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund last season and is even more dominant this campaign. “We can see you, but we still need a telescope,” Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. Of 27 games so far this season, Bayern has won 25 and drawn the other two. It has also scored more goals (79) and conceded fewer (13) than any other side by a large margin. “Its impressive,” Klopp said. “You have to take your hat off to the consistent performances they deliver on the pitch and the drive they have.” Klopps side had to settle for a 0-0 draw in the Ruhr derby with Schalke despite dominating. Dortmund remained one point ahead of Schalke but slipped 25 behind Bayern, the first side to win the Bundesliga as early as March. “Were all very surprised as we expected it in February,” Schalke general manager Horst Heldt joked. “But seriously, it was a magnificent season from Bayern.” Bayerns celebrations were reserved by usual standards, perhaps an indicator of how predictable the title race had become. Players donned T-shirts with the number 24 referring to Bayerns championships on their backs, while Guardiola remained on the bench speaking with his wife on the mobile phone. There were none of the traditional “beer showers” and no trophy was presented. “Congratulations to Bayern, especially to coach Pep Guardiola,” Germany coach Joachim Loew said. “He developed the team even further and clearly left his mark in terms of dominance and possession.” Many wondered how Guardiola could match the success enjoyed under predecessor Jupp Heynckes, who led Bayern to its first treble of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup victories last year. Guardiola led Barcelona to 14 titles in four seasons in charge of the club where he played most of his career as a stylish defensive midfielder. But there was no guarantee he could replicate that success in Germany, a country he had only experienced as a visitor beforee.dddddddddddd Guardiola spoke German on his introduction to the media last June, two days before beginning work as Bayern coach. Since then he has made the best ever start for a coach in the Bundesliga, where he is yet to taste defeat, while he has led Bayern to three titles including the latest. Bayern had already won the Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup under his tenure. “You always hope it goes well but I never expected it to go so well. The first four or five months were difficult but the individual talent saw us through,” Guardiola said. “Well celebrate this today and tomorrow.” With domestic domination appearing secure for years to come, Bayern will measure its success on a continental scale. The clubs achievement of five European Cup or Champions League titles is eclipsed only by Real Madrid and AC Milan, with nine and seven, respectively. Bayern aims to become the first side to defend the title since it was changed to the new format in 1992. It was handed a favourable draw for the quarterfinals in a Manchester United side still finding its feet since Alex Ferguson retired as coach. The only cloud on the horizon has been Uli Hoeness conviction for tax evasion. The former Bayern president, who is widely credited with building up this dominant team, is soon expected to begin his 3 1/2-year prison term. “The championship is for Uli Hoeness, the most important person at the club,” Guardiola said. Kroos opened the scoring with a half-volley through Hertha goalkeeper Thomas Krafts legs in the sixth minute, after Christoph Janker deflected Thomas Muellers cross into the unmarked midfielders path. It ensured Bayerns record of scoring in 64 successive Bundesliga games continued. Poor defending from the home side allowed Goetze to score with a header from Bastian Schweinsteigers cross in the 14th. The intensity dropped in the second half until an apparent push from Rafinha on Ramos allowed the Colombian striker pull one back from the penalty spot in the 66th. Ribery made sure of the result in the 79th with a fine finish after a determined run past a host of defenders by Goetze. “It is indeed a bit cold outside in March but you can tell that we were up for it and wanted to win every game,” Bayern and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said. “Its very special to be German champions so early.” Football statisticians Opta said Bayern set a new Bundesliga record against Hertha with 1,078 passes, and that Bayern captain Philipp Lahm successfully completed all of his 133, also a record. “After the last successful season we were very focused in our work and were champions even earlier than last year. Its good and were happy,” Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer said. Bayerns previous seven titles also came at matches away from home. Also Tuesday, Wolfsburg won 3-1 at Werder Bremen and bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig grabbed a lifeline with 3-1 home victory over Mainz. Téma: Jak postupovat / mpionship next month, and hi Perhaps no one is happier that the UFC is introducing a 115-pound strawweight division for women than bantamweight champion (Rowdy) Ronda Rousey. Rousey (9-0) is the undisputed queen of 135-pounders, with three successful UFC title defences already. Eight of her nine wins have come in the first round, lasting a combined 13 minutes 34 seconds. Next up for the Olympic judo bronze medallist is Canadian Alexis Davis (16-5) at UFC 175 on July 5 in Las Vegas. Rousey has plenty of respect for Davis, a native of Port Colborne, Ont., who trains out of San Diego and is ranked No. 2 among UFC bantamweight contenders. But Rousey is also keenly aware of the need for competition to keep her division interesting. “Its no fun having just one person crushing everyone,” she told The Canadian Press in a recent interview. “I really do feel my fights are still exciting. They can be one-sided, people still enjoy watching them.” The addition of the 115-pound division means “not all of womens MMA is dependent on how my division is doing,” she added. “There was a while that (former middleweight champion) Anderson Silva was just crushing everyone. No one was crying about how that division was doing because there were so many other divisions going on that were ultra-competitive at the time.” Rousey believes the 115-pound division is thick with talent, will be ultra-competitive and that it will take a while before one champion takes charge. “Maybe by the time that happens, Ill already be moved on with my life and going on to the next chapter and then the womens bantamweight division will be the competitive one again,” said the 27-year-old champion. "I really feel like the two (divisions) could really help each other out a lot. "And its not good to have champions being turned over all the time either, and not to have anyone to be dominant at all. So you really just have to find that balance. And I think that having two divisions in different states is a way that we can find that balance. " The UFC turned to the Invicta FC womens MMA organization to help populate the strawweight division with Invicta assigning 11 contracts to the UFC. Those fighters, plus five others, will report to Las Vegas in May to take part in Season 20 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality TV show. The winner will be crowned the inaugural UFC womens strawweight champion. Rousey has branched off into movie work recently but says she has no time frame for moving on from MMA. “Me and my coach talked about this and we agreed that the day that I dont feel like training anymore is that is the day Im going to quit,” she said. “If I dont want to come to the gym and train, then I dont deserve to be, dont belong in the ring fighting any more.” There is no fear of that happening imminently. “I still park my car and literally jog from the parking lot into the gym because I cant wait to get in there. Téma: Jak postupovat / 24:25, Slater won 11 o Michael Brantley did anything and everything for the Indians last season. His versatility and consistency has been rewarded. Brantley has agreed to long-term contract with the Indians, a person familiar with the deal told the AP on Tuesday. Clevelands most consistent player in 2013, Brantley will sign a four-year, $25 million deal once he passes a physical, says the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract cant be finalized until he undergoes the medical examination. The Indians are reporting to spring training in Goodyear, Ariz., this week, and it appears theyll open camp by announcing their commitment to Brantley. The deal was first reported by Northeast Ohio Media Group. Brantley moved from centre field to left last spring when the Indians signed free agent Michael Bourn. The switch didnt rattle Brantley, who batted .284 with 10 homers and 73 RBIs in 151 games. Manager Terry Francona used Brantley throughout his lineup — he batted everywhere but ninth — and he excelled in the field by not making an error and recording 11 assists. The Indians were scheduled to go to an arbitration hearing with Brantley on Feb. 17. Brantleys new deal locks him up through the 2017 season and the club has an $11 million option for 2018. He was at his best late last season, batting .345 with 14 RBIs in September to lead the Indians push toward a wild-card playoff spot. Brantley began his career with Cleveland as “the player to be named” in the blockbuster deal that sent pitcher CC Sabathia to Milwaukee in 2008. While first baseman Matt LaPorta didnt pan out for the Indians, Brantley has developed into one of their core players. . |

Téma: Jak postupovat / bout that in here. Its a (Sports Network) – Vancouver opted to add depth at the trade deadline rather than go after a big scorer. If Mason Raymond can start getting hot, it will be just as beneficial. Raymond and the Canucks wrap a six-game homestand this evening versus the skidding Nashville Predators at Rogers Arena. Tops in the NHL with 89 points, the Canucks are among the league leaders with 207 goals and decided to add to its bottom two lines on Monday by acquiring center Maxim Lapierre and forward Chris Higgins in two separate trades. Lapierre made his debut in Tuesdays 2-1 shootout victory over Columbus, but Higgins remains out with a broken left thumb. Raymond, Alexandre Burrows and Raffi Torres all scored shootout goals, with Torres winner coming in the eighth round, and Roberto Luongo made 30 saves through overtime with another six stops in the tiebreaker. “Like Ive always said, you lose some, you win some,” Luongo said. “The shootout, you never know. Fortunately, tonight we ended up on the good side of it.” The victory has the Canucks three points up on the Eastern Conference-leading Flyers and four ahead of the second-seeded Red Wings in the West. Vancouver hopes that Raymonds outing on Tuesday is a sign of things to come. A 25-goal scorer last year, Raymond snapped an 11-game goal drought and has scored just three times in his last 27 games. The Canucks are 3-2 on a six-game homestand and have alternated wins and losses over the last 11 games. Vancouver hasnt won consecutive contests since the end of a six-game win streak on Feb. 4 and 7. The Predators also engaged in a shootout contest on Tuesday in Edmonton, but suffered a 2-1 loss to fall to 1-4-1 in their last six games. Pekka Rinne ended with 25 saves and Blake Geoffrion, the NHLs first fourth-generation player, scored his first goal in just his third career game. Still, Nashville is now tied for ninth in the West and a point back of a playoff spot. “Its a huge point that got away from us — these are the games we must win,” said Rinne. “Obviously its a big point, and we have to respect that, but right now it feels like a lost game.” The Predators loss came in the opener of a four-game road trip and they have lost three straight and six of their last seven as the guest. The Preds and Canucks have split a pair of meetings this year, with each team claiming a home victory. Vancouver has won nine of the last 13 meetings overall and four of the last six at Rogers Arena, including a 2-1 triumph on Jan. 26. Rinne is 3-3-0 with a 2.19 goals-against average versus the Canucks, while Luongo is 9-9-0 with three ties and a 2.25 GAA against the Predators. Post-Penner, Oilers look for another win versus Blue Jackets (Sports Network) – The Edmonton Oilers will search for a second straight victory since trading Dustin Penner when they face the Columbus Blue Jackets at Rexall Place. Edmonton played extra time on Tuesday versus Nashville, winning a 2-1 shootout decision. Linus Omark had the game-winner in the breakaway session and Jim Vandermeer scored the Oilers only regulation goal as the club halted a two-game slide with its fifth victory in eight games. With Nikolai Khabibulin out with an eye injury, Martin Gerber got the call over Devan Dubnyk and made 34 saves in his first start since Nov. 29. Gerber is 3-0 with a 1.30 goals-against average in three starts this season. “He was outstanding. He was the only reason we are talking about a win tonight.” Oilers head coach Tom Renney said of Gerber. Edmonton, which is still last in the NHL with 50 points, improved to 1-2-0 on a four-game homestand one day after trading forward Dustin Penner to the Los Angeles Kings and could also be without forward Ales Hemsky tonight. He left the Oilers last game with an undisclosed injury and had an MRI on Wednesday. It is unknown if Gerber or Dubnyk will get the call tonight. Gerber is 1-3-0 with a tie and 2.44 GAA versus Columbus, while Dubnyk is 0-2-1 with a 3.28 GAA. Whoever gets the start will have to slow down Columbus forward Kristian Huselius, who has five goals in two games versus the Oilers this year, including a hat trick in a 6-3 loss at Edmonton on Dec. 16. Overall, Huselius has points in six straight against the Oilers, logging nine goals and six assists for 15 points. Huselius and R.J. Umberger scored twice and the latter added two assists in a 4-3 victory in the last meeting at home on Feb. 5. The Blue Jackets have won five of their last six overall versus the Oilers, but have dropped six of eight and 12 of the past 16 in Edmonton. Mason is 5-2-0 with a 3.27 GAA in his career when facing the Oilers, while Mathieu Garon is 4-6-1 with a 3.27 GAA versus them. The Blue Jackets have lost the first two games of their swing, following Sundays loss at Nashville that snapped a three-game winning streak with a 2-1 shootout defeat in Vancouver. Columbus fell to 5-1-2 in its last eightgames and is five points back of a playoff spot. Scottie Upshall scored in his Blue Jackets debut versus the Canucks, one day after being acquired from Phoenix along with defenseman Sam Lepisto for blueliner Rostislav Klesla and a minor league player. Rick Nash and Antoine Vermette scored shootout goals, but Steve Mason was bested three times in the eight-round tiebreaker after making 25 saves through overtime against the NHLs top team. “It would have been nice to finish that off with both points, but I thought we played a heck of a hockey game against a really good team and a tough goalie [in Vancouvers Roberto Luongo],” said Blue Jackets head coach Scott Arniel. And in true Leyland fashion, his remarks were to the point. “I will say we will miss Jhonny Peralta and thats the end of it,” Leyland said before Detroits game against the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night. “Im not going to discuss it any further. I do owe you that comment, I think.” Shortly after Peralta was banned 50 games by Major League Baseball for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal on Monday, Leyland told reporters to leave his office after he was asked to comment on Peraltas suspension. General manager Dave Dombrowski had told media members he would be the teams lone spokesman on the matter. Leyland said he wasnt comfortable addressing Peraltas complex situation. The two-time All-Star was one of 13 players disciplined in baseballs most sweeping punishment in nearly a century. “I was not going to make comments on stuff,” a relaxed Leyland said, sitting at his desk holding a bat before batting practice. “Youre talking about legal issues and everything else. Thats silly for somebody like me to be making comments about that. Im not going to do it. Im not going to get trapped into that.” Leyland felt it was best to leave the Tigers comments on the matter to Dombrowski, who spent 10 minutes addressing the situatiion in Detroits dugout before Mondays series opener.dddddddddddd Leyland thought it was disrespectful that he was asked about Peralta after media members were informed he would only talk about on-field issues. “We tried to have one spokesman and we tried to eliminate as much bombardment of the players as we could because we are here to play a game,” Leyland said. "Thats why Dave was the spokesman and thats why we werent going to get into any discussions about that in here. Its also a no-win situation to start talking about that. “Some managers have made comments about it. I choose not to because I dont think thats my place. Nothing good could come out it in here because you dont know details. You dont know facts. You dont want to start popping off because you dont know what youre talking about, particularly when its something of that magnitude.” Leyland is confident that his Tigers, who have won nine straight and have a four-game lead over second-place Cleveland entering Tuesdays game, will remain driven and wont be distracted by Peraltas absence. “They did a great job of maintaining their focus pretty good on an uncomfortable day for you and me and the players and everybody else,” Leyland said. “They did a terrific job of keeping their focus on the task at hand because it was not a fun day, obviously, for baseball.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / pass and found San (SportsNetwork.com) – The NFL Players Association thinks Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano leaked confidential information about former Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freemans inclusion in the NFLs substance-abuse program, according to a report. The union wants the league to participate in a joint investigation of Schiano so it can question him, USA Today reported Sunday, citing a correspondence it had obtained. Previously, NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith said the union would investigate if the Buccaneers leaked information about the quarterback. The union says it doesnt have confidence in the leagues separate probe partly because it is unaware of any previous NFL investigation into such a confidentiality breach that has yielded discipline, according to the report. After ESPN reported the quarterbacks inclusion in the drug program, Freeman said in a statement he never tested positive for an illegal drug but takes ADHD medication and said he accidentally took Ritalin instead of Adderall last year, which triggered a positive test. As a result, he was placed in Stage 1 of the NFLs substance-abuse program and submitted to frequent drug tests. Freeman was released by the Buccaneers after being benched by Schiano and now plays for the Minnesota Vikings. Schiano was asked by reporters if he was the source of the leak and replied, “absolutely not.” The NFLPA says it has information Schiano discussed Freemans inclusion in the drug program with other Buccaneers players, according to USA Today. An NFL spokesman told the paper the league takes the confidentiality provision of the drug policy “as seriously as the union and will vigorously pursue any leads the union provides.” “However, such information should be shared confidentially with our office rather than inappropriately leaked to the media before the investigation has been concluded,” spokesman Brian McCarthy said. Neymar, David Luiz and Marcelo scored in the shootout, and Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar saved two penalties before watching Gonzalo Jaras final attempt hit the post. “My teammates are giving me a lot of strength on the field so I give my best,” Cesar said. “Were just three steps away and I hope to give another interview with Brazil partying.” Brazil, which extended its 39-year unbeaten streak in home competitive matches to 61, will next face either Colombia or Uruguay in the quarterfinals. Neither team managed to score at the Mineirao Stadium after first-half goals from Luiz and Sanchez, but Brazil came close to an early exit when Mauricio Pinillas shot hit the crossbar in the final moments of extra time. Chile also had the best chance in the second half, when Cesars spectacular save on Charles Aranguizs shot kept the score even. Brazil has reached the quarterfinals of each World Cup since Argentina eliminated it in the second round in 1990. Getting knocked out at that stage in its own World Cup would have been a disaster. But the Brazilians overcame their nerves in the shootout, with Neymar scoring the final penalty after Cesar stopped spot kicks from Pinilla and Sanchez. When Jara hit the post, some of Brazils players celebrated wildly while others fell to the ground, exhausted and emotionally drained. Willian, who missed a penalty for Brazil, sobbed uncontrollably, as Fred helped him to his feet. As the crowd roared, the Brazilian players joined hands in a human chain. The Chileans stood still, staring into the ground, wiping the sweat off their faces. “We tried to give everything, we tried to fight for a dream, and we didnt achieve it,” Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal said.dddddddddddd “But we gave all our effort on the pitch.” Calling it a “harsh” loss, Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli said he had been convinced his team would come out the winner. “Do you think I can be satisfied with the result?” Sampaoli said. “Weve played a hard 120 minutes even if everybody was against us in the stadium.” Brazil went ahead in the 18th minute after Thiago Silva deflected Neymars corner kick toward the far post. Luiz was given the goal but replays showed Chile defender Gonzalo Jara may have touched the ball before it went in. Brazil lost the lead when it failed to cope with Chiles aggressive pressure in a throw-in situation deep inside Brazils half of the field. Eduardo Vargas intercepted Hulks pass and found Sanchez on the right side of the area. The Barcelona striker scored easily with a shot toward the far post. Neymar, Fred and Dani Alves had chances in the first half while a second-half goal from Hulk was disallowed when referee Howard Webb ruled he handled the ball. Chile has never beaten Brazil in Brazil but was hoping for another upset after eliminating defending champion Spain in the group stage. “We played the toughest opponents in the tournament, Spain, Holland, Brazil, and we never played like a team that was weaker than anyone else,” said Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, who blocked Hulks attempt in the shootout and watched Willians shot go wide. “The truth is that we are very sad because we could have won the match before, we should have taken advantage of some good chances,” Bravo said. “We felt we could win and we didnt.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / podium in the inaugural Olym SAN ANTONIO — North Carolina had 1.6 seconds to score and avoid another early NCAA tournament exit, but instead spent that precious time trying to call timeout. A fittingly frustrating end to a frustrating Tar Heels season. With coach Roy Williams jumping and gesticulating for a timeout, the No. 6 seed Tar Heels inbounded the ball to Nate Britt who dribbled past midcourt as time expired, ousting them in the third round for a second consecutive season in a 85-83 loss to Iowa State on Sunday. Officials huddled for several minutes reviewing the clock on replays before confirming that the game was over. Williams — who collapsed his hands on his knees as Britt surged toward him — then shook Iowa State coach Fred Hoibergs hand as North Carolina began absorbing the heartbreaker. “We made some mistakes. We practice all the time that situation for five guys to be calling timeout, and Im supposed to be calling timeout, and I was calling timeout,” Williams said. "Referees didnt recognize it. We practice those scenarios, so we made mistakes. " Iowa States DeAndre Kane did exactly as his coach had instructed, driving for a layup with 1.6 seconds left that gave the Cyclones the lead. His twisting shot put Iowa State in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000. “Hes been our Mariano Rivera. Hes been our closer all throughout this season,” Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said. Now the No. 3 seed Cyclones (28-7) are headed to the home of the former Yankees star, New York City, where they will play No. 7 seed Connecticut in the East Regional semifinals next week. The No. 6 seed Tar Heels (24-10) are gone in the NCAA tournaments opening weekend for the first time in consecutive seasons under Williams, who choked back tears following the end of his 10th season in Chapel Hill. “Lets not anybody lay it on the officials or anything like that. We didnt call the timeout with 1.6 seconds to play,” Williams said. Britt said he thought North Carolina got the timeout before the buzzer. “When I looked up at the clock I saw one-point-something time left,” he said. “I saw staff screaming and trying to call timeout.” Kane finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds. It was just the kind of big game the Cyclones needed without forward Georges Niang, who broke his foot in Fridays win against North Carolina Central. The 6-foot-7 sophomore sat on the bench wearing a bulky boot while the Cyclones tried their best without their third-leading scorer and tallest starter. Kane said the last possession called for him to attack the basket, unless North Carolina defenders swarmed him as he penetrated. “But nobody helped, and I made an acrobatic shot and it went in,” Kane said. Marcus Paige led North Carolina with 19 points and Kennedy Meeks had 15 points and 13 rebounds. But North Carolina played nearly the entire game without forward Brice Johnson, who sprained ankle in the opening minutes. The team said X-rays were negative, but the Tar Heels third-leading scorer never returned. The Tar Heels crave a fast pace, and — after dealing with the grind-it-out style of recent opponents — Williams and Paige had spoken of relishing the chance to finally hit the gas against the similarly up-tempo Cyclones. But this was no track meet. Undersized Iowa State bottled up the Tar Heels before they could run and bombarded them with 3-pointers (12 of 26) instead of quick baskets. The first dunk came from Kane, not the high-flying Tar Heels, and not until 12 minutes into the game after a handful of bungled North Carolina fast breaks. Niangs injury left Hoiberg with a tough choice: go small with his best remaining five or a put a little-used big man in place of his star sophomore. He opted for size over another shooter, giving 6-foot-8 forward Daniel Edozie his first career start. Edozie missed the only two shots he tried and grabbed four rebounds. But Johnsons bum ankle reduced North Carolinas size advantage. Johnson, who came in averaging 10.6 points and is the Tar Heels second-leading rebounder, tumbled to the floor with North Carolina up 12-7. He sat on the bench before hobbling to the locker room. Coincidental or not, the Cyclones got hot the moment Johnson left the game. They shook off a 1-for-10 start from the floor and erased a seven-point deficit in less than 1 1/2 minutes. After that, neither team led by more than single digits. “Once Georges got injured people didnt think that we had enough to pull out this win,” forward Dustin Hogue said. “This goes to show that we have depth and we have heart. With enough heart you can beat anybody.” . Téma: Jak postupovat / more yards passing, a better ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Oakland Raiders have added another proven veteran to their rebuilding defence, signing free-agent cornerback Carlos Rogers to a one-year contract on Monday. Rogers, 32, joins former San Francisco 49ers secondary mate Tarell Brown on Oaklands overhauled defence. The Raiders have also brought in defensive linemen Justin Tuck, LaMarr Woodley and Antonio Smith. All of those other players are at least 29 years old and have played in the Super Bowl in their careers as general manager Reggie McKenzie is counting on that experience to help end an 11-year playoff drought. “The Raiders have been one of the teams that have been more active in the off-season, trying to turn things around,” Rogers said. “I see where this team is going and it wasnt hard to come here and finalize the deal.” Oakland is coming off back-to-back four-win seasons and hasnt had a winning record since winning the 2002 AFC championship. After showing some promise early in the season, the Raiders defence wilted late and allowed the second-most points per game (28.3) in franchise history. Oakland has had two of the three highest scoring seasons allowed in coach Dennis Allens first two years with the franchise. That led to the big changes on defence this off-season. Rogers played an NFL-high 1,259 snaps as a slot cornerback in his three years in San Francisco, according to Pro Football Focus. He will likely play that role again in Oakland on the nickel defence and will also compete with last years first-round pick D.J. Hayden for a starting spot outside across from Brown. “We were a big part of the puzzle that turned San Franciscos defence around, so hopefully we can translate that over here and be even better,” Rogers said. Rogers was let go earlier this off-season by the Niners in a cost-saving move. He said he holds no ill will to his former team but is looking forward to playing San Francisco this upcoming season. Rogers has started 116 games over nine seasons with Washington and San Francisco. He has 17 career interceptions and 109 passes defenced. His best year statistically came in his first season in San Francisco in 2011 when he had six interceptions and was picked for the Pro Bowl and earned second-team All Pro honours. That performance helped lead San Francisco back to the playoffs after eight straight years without a berth. Rogers played in three NFC title games in three seasons with the Niners and also lost the Super Bowl to Baltimore following the 2012 season. “I want to continue to win and I want to continue to be a big part of helping to turn this organization around, like I did in San Francisco and continue to win and try to get to that Super Bowl and win it,” Rogers said. Johnny Football is heading to the NFL. Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel declared for the NFL draft on Wednesday following two spectacular seasons in which he became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy and helped the Aggies make a splash in their first two years in the Southeastern Conference. “After long discussions with my family, friends, teammates, and coaches, I have decided to make myself available for the 2014 NFL draft,” Manziel said in a letter posted online by the university. “The decision was not an easy one, but we all felt this was the right time to make the next step toward a professional career.” Some NFL draft analysts have Manziel ranked as high as the third overall pick in mock drafts. In a style befitting his record-setting career, Manziel led the Aggies to a 52-48 come-from-behind win over Duke in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl on New Years Eve in his final college game. Texas A&M trailed 38-17 at halftime before Manziel guided them to the victory by finishing with 382 yards passing with four TD tosses and 73 yards rushing and another score. “In all of my years of coaching, Johnny Manziel is the most exciting football player I have ever seen,” A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said. “We appreciate everything he has done for Texas A&M and Aggie football and wish him nothing but the best.” Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman in 2012 after setting numerous school and SEC records while leading Texas A&M to an 11-2 record and a victory over No. 1 Alabama in its first season in the SEC. His dynamic play created a frenzy and pushed him into a stratosphere of celebrity that few college athletes have reached. That began to cause problems since Manziel, who is from Kerrville, Texas, still had three years of eligibility remaining. He followed his Heisman-winning season with a high-profile off-season of road trips to Las Vegas and the NBA Finals. Manziel met Heat star LeBron James and rapper Drake, and he posted some tweets that made headlines. One that brought the ire of Aggie fans was when he said he “couldnt wait” to get out of College Stationn.dddddddddddd His most embarrassing blunder came during the summer when he departed early from a quarterback camp for high school players run by the Manning family in Louisiana. Manziel said it was a mutual decision after he overslept and missed meetings and activities. Manziels trouble continued when he got back to football. He was suspended for the first half of the Aggies season opener against Rice for what the school said was an “inadvertent” violation of NCAA rules. He was investigated for allegedly accepting money for autographs from memorabilia brokers, a violation of NCAA rules that could have led to a much longer suspension. The Aggies were supposed to contend for a national title in Manziels encore. But another standout season by the dynamic quarterback wasnt enough to overcome a porous defence that was among the worst in the nation. Texas A&M finished 9-4. Manziel shook off his early season drama to lead the SEC with 4,114 yards and 37 touchdowns and he topped the team in rushing with 759 yards and nine more scores. He threw more touchdown passes, had more yards passing, a better completion percentage and averaged more yards an attempt than he did in 2012. Manziel set an SEC record with 5,116 yards of total offence in 2012 also led the SEC in total offence in 2013. Manziel was again a finalist for the Heisman in 2013, but Jameis Winston stole his thunder with a season much like Manziels a year before to take home the award to Florida State. Manziel finished fifth. Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton tweeted about Manziel following the announcement. “Would love to see Johnny Manziel in a Vikings uniform. This guy is the real deal. He will be a big time player on Sundays,” Tarkenton tweeted. The Vikings have the eighth overall pick in the draft. The Houston Texans, who play about 100 miles from College Station, have the No. 1 pick in the draft and need a quarterback, though most mock drafts have Louisvilles Teddy Bridgewater going No. 1. Houston Rockets forward Chandler Parsons tweeted good luck to Manziel in the draft Wednesday and finished the tweet with: “Texans??” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / the other end of the table It was a good day for Brad Jacobs and his Sault Ste. Marie rink in the Ice Cube Curling Center, as they moved Canada up to 3-2 in the round robin by beating Denmark by a score of 7-6. Playing in front of a pretty raucous crowd, Jacobs defeated Danish skip Rasmus Stjerne to give the Canadians their second straight victory in as many days, and dropping Denmarks record to 2-3. It was a cerebral match from the beginning, with both teams going into the 10th end tied at six, but Jacobs utilized the hammer to win it for the Canucks. There was barely any separation between the teams, and when it appeared that Canada finally created a small gulf, the Danes would counter with singles. Denmark finally got their breakthrough in the ninth, closing the distance with a deuce to knot things at six-all, before Jacobs sealed the win. Now sitting at 3-2, Canada faces Norway on Friday. In other games Russia defeated Switzerland 7-6, Sweden beat Norway 5-4, and Great Britain beat the US 5-3. . Former Milan striker Antonio Cassano scored a brace, including a penalty after Rossoneri goalkeeper Christian Abbiati was sent off in the fifth minute for bringing down Ezequiel Schelotto. Adil Ramis header and a penalty from Mario Balotelli saw Milan pull level but Amauri and Jonathan Biabiany secured the win for Parma. It was the second successive match Milan has conceded four goals after its hefty Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. There were protests outside San Siro before and after the match, while Balotelli was booed almost every time he touched the ball. Balotelli was among a delegation from Milan which held a brief meeting with the ultras after the match. Milan coach Clarence Seedorf — who was shown support during the match by the fans — was also present. “They are always delicate situations,” Seedorf said. "It was a peaceful meeting between people who have this shirt and this club in their hearts. We all want the best for this club in a period where things arent going well. “The meeting was very peaceful. There were also postive aspects because everyone has a great respect for this shirt. After (the 1-0 home defeat to) Atletico, the fans applauded the squad and the performance, we also need the results.” Parma provisionally moved into fifth spot, two points ahead of Fiorentina which hosts Chievo Verona later. Serie A leader Juventus also plays this evening, at Genoa. Elsewhere, bottom club Sassuolo beat 19th-place Catania 3-1 and nine-man Livorno beat Bologna 2-1 in tense relegation battles. Bologna has replaced Livorno in the bottom three. Lazio won 2-0 at Catania while earlier Atalanta eased to a 3-0 win over Sampdoria. Milan got off to bad start when Abbiati came rushing out of his area and clattered into Schelotto. He was shown a straight red card and substitute goalkeeper Marco Amelias first task was to pick the ball out of the back of the net following Cassanos penalty. Balotelli almost levelled 10 minutes later but he sidefooted a corner off the base of the right post. Cassano doubled his tally five minutes into the second hhalf as he was left in acres of space to control Afriyie Acquahs cross and fire home.dddddddddddd. Milan pulled one back shortly before the hour when substitute Rami got between two defenders to head in Kakas cross three minutes after coming off the bench. And Milan was surprisingly level in the 75th minute after Joel Obi was harshly judged to have brought down Riccardo Montolivo in the area and Balotelli converted the resulting penalty. However, Amauri backeeled Schelottos cross in moments later and Biabiany headed in seconds before the final whistle to ensure Parma extended its club record unbeaten run to 16 matches. Lazio remained five points behind Parma after its win at 10-man Cagliari. Lazio took the lead in the 19th minute as Miroslav Klose flicked on for Senad Lulic to race through one-on-one with the goalkeeper and fire past Vlada Avramov. Cagliari should have levelled in the 68th after Alvaro Gonzalez fouled Matias Vecino in the area but Mauricio Pinilla drove his penalty wide of the right post. Lazio sealed the match seconds later when Keita Balde drove Kloses through-ball into the bottom right corner. Cagliari captain Daniele Conti was then sent off for an elbow on Lucas Biglia. At the other end of the table, Sassuolo picked up its first win in nine matches. Catania, which had earlier hit the post, went in front on the half hour as Gonzalo Bergessio beat the offside trap and placed an angled drive into the far corner. Halftime substitute Simone Zaza levelled for Sassuolo, which took the lead when Simone Missiroli was allowed a free header on a corner. Sassuolo was dominating and Nicola Sansone sealed the match two minutes from time. Sassuolo swapped places with Catania at the foot of the standings and is three points from safety after Livornos win. Marco Benassi and Paulinho scored at the start of the second half but Ibrahima Mbaye was sent off with 10 minutes remaining after a second yellow card for handball. Innocent Emeghara was also dismissed for Livorno following another booking for a foul on Archimede Morleo five minutes from time and Lazaros Christodoulopoulos converted the resulting penalty. Livorno had squandered a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 last weekend, but held on for a vital three points. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / an Segura and third basem TORONTO — On a day when Julio Cesar essentially said farewell to Toronto FC, fellow goalie Joe Bendik opted not to talk to the media. Perhaps he was ceding the day to the Brazilian No. 1, one reporter surmised. A day later, Bendik came clean. Chatting with journalists had conflicted with his tee time Tuesday. The 25-year-old American keeper, who shot a round of 79, comes with a certain amount of swagger. That ego took a jolt when, after winning Torontos No. 1 job in 2013, Bendik lost his starting role in pre-season to Cesar. “A hit to my pride today but luckily Ive got tons of it! Going to take in everything I can from a top shelf gk (goalkeeper) to better my abilities,” Bendik tweeted, with a colourful adjective before tons, when Cesars signing was announced in February. Three months later, Bendik is back as Torontos No. 1. Cesar has left the club for the World Cup and is not expected back, with Englands Queens Park Rangers looking to cut short the loan agreement with MLS. Bendik says he is a better goalie for having spent time with the 34-year-old Cesar. “He did things for my career that I couldnt do over 20 years, probably,” said Bendik, his post-practice calendar apparently a littler clearer Wednesday. "Just to see him play, see his professionalism was amazing. “Now I have to step in and start to play some games and continue what I did last year. And continue what Ive done the last three games.” Cesar gave way to Bendik for both legs of the Amway Canadian Championship semifinal against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Bendik also played in Saturdays 2-0 league win over the New York Red Bulls when Cesar was laid low by the flu. Bendik came to Toronto in a December 2012 trade with Portland. The Timbers got forward Ryan Johnson and goalie Milos Kocic in exchange for Bendik, the third overall pick in the 2013 SuperDraft and allocation money. At the time, the goalie component of the deal seemed like a swap of backups with Bendik taking over for Kocic — who believed he should have been No. 1 in Toronto — behind the oft-injured Stefan Frei. But when Frei was injured in the first pre-season game in Florida in 2013, Bendik took over and started 33 games for Toronto. Frei was traded to Seattle at the end of the season and Bendik was rewarded with a new contract. When he heard Cesar was coming to Toronto, Bendik said he knew it could go “either amazing or terrible. Luckily its amazing.” It helped that inside the team, word was that Cesar was likely going after the World Cup. Rather than being left out in the cold, Bendik knew in essence that he was having an extended training camp — while having the opportunity to learn from one of the best goalies in the world. It was no coincidence that Nelsen, praising Bendik after he helped Toronto win a penalty shootout in the Amway Canadian Championship, said he would not be surprised to see his young keeper earn a call-up to the U.S. national team after the World Cup. Cesar was moving on. Bendik was back. For Nelsen, the Cesar acquisition was always a marriage of convenience with a short timeline. Cesar needed a place to play ahead of the World Cup and QPR wanted some salary relief. Toronto got a world-class goalie, a tutor for Bendik and the invaluable publicity of seeing Toronto FC by the name of Brazils goalkeeper at the World Cup. Having Cesar around would also help settle fellow Brazilians Gilberto and Jackson. Plus the short-term nature of the relationship means that the club will have some salary cap space come the summer. It was win-win. “Its benefited the league, its benefited the club and its benefited every single player here at Toronto,” Nelsen said. It helped that Cesar, like Englands Jermain Defoe and American Michael Bradley, was a good citizen with an ego seemingly in check. They may be stars, but they dont act like it. Cesar met the media only periodically in Toronto. But he was always relaxed when he did, his arm invariably around translator Daniel Correia. “Thats Nellie,” Bendik said, referring to Nelsen. “I think his No. 1 prerequisite is you have to be a good guy. You have to be a character in the locker-room. If youre not, he doesnt really care for it.” Cesars relaxed way was infectious. Bendik, for one, says the Brazilians message was to let mistakes go, to look ahead rather than behind. When that advice comes from a Serie A goalkeeper of the year and Champions League winner, you tend to listen. “When he came, right away he took me under his arm and he wanted the best for me right from the start,” Bendik said. “That helped me a lot to embrace the moment.” Its help that Bendik says he will pay forward — if he finds himself playing in his mid-30s with a young goalie. “I hope Im half the way he is,” he said of Cesar. “Its been fantastic,” said backup goalie Chris Konopka. “Working side by side with Julio, with the Brazil No. 1, hes as focused as he will ever be because hes preparing himself to be on the world stage, for basically the No. 1 team in the world,” he added. “All eyes are going to be on him. It was definitely a unique and great experience working side by side with him.” The goalies arent the only ones to praise Cesar. Captain Steven Caldwell says playing with Cesar has been one of the highlights of his career. “The impact hes had on me and everybody else at this football club is huge,” said the Scottish defender. “In such a short space of time, for everybody to have the pleasure to see what its like to be a top, top professional and an outstanding goalkeeper is a real pleasure.” “An outstanding human being,” added Caldwell. The whole team plans to stay in touch with the Brazilian, by means of a chat group during the World Cup. No one will cheer louder than the Toronto FC dressing room if Cesar gets to hoist the World Cup. Braun had missed the last six games with the injury. Since the outfielder hadnt played, the move was made retroactive to April 27 and he will be eligible to return on May 12. Braun also had been sidelined a few games this season by a sore right thumb. Overall, the former NL MVP is batting .318 with six homers and 18 RBIs. Milwaukee activated outfielder Logan Schafer off the disabled list before a game against the Cincinnati Reds. Hed been sidelined by a strained right hamstring. The Brewers had the best record in the majors when they made the moves. They were hopeful that Braun could be back in less than two weeks, but finally decided it was better not to rush him. “I think for a lot of reasons it makes the most sense — for me, for the team, just looking out from a long-term perspective,” Braun said. “It made more sense to try to let it get healthy instead of trying to force it and rush back. &”Were headed in the right direction.dddddddddddd If we werent headed in the right direction, we would have made the move immediately. But its definitely gotten better. The oblique is one of those trick injuries." Braun went on the disabled list for the first time in his career last season, sidelined from June 14 to July 7 with an injured right thumb. He accepted a 65-game suspension on July 22 for violations of Major League Baseballs drug agreement and labour contract. Shortstop Jean Segura and third baseman Aramis Ramirez also missed time with injuries last week. Despite the setbacks, Milwaukee took a 21-9 record into Saturday nights game. With Braun sidelined, the Brewers have been short-handed in the outfield. First baseman Mark Reynolds made his first career start in right field on Thursday night. Schafer batted .214 with two RBIs before he got hurt. Manager Ron Roenicke expects Braun to be fully recovered from the injury when hes eligible to be activated. “This way hopefully we will be assured that it will be gone when hes back,” Roenicke said. “So it makes sense to do it.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / drain in the shower," h SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuses streak lives on — barely. With their key players struggling, the top-ranked Orange used their defence to remain unbeaten, edging North Carolina State 56-55 on C.J. Fairs layup with 6.7 seconds left Saturday night. Rakeem Christmas started the winning sequence with a steal in the lane off a trap in the left corner, and Fair finished it with a layup in transition. “We got out of it by making a good play at the end,” Orange coach Jim Boeheim said. “We were able to make some good plays finally at the end, and one big play.” The start of the game was pushed back four hours because of a snowstorm that wreaked havoc along the eastern seaboard. N.C. State did not land in Syracuse until Saturday afternoon. The teams Twitter account announced the Wolfpacks arrival at 3:07 p.m., seven minutes later than the original scheduled tip-off. It turned out to be worth the wait, tight all the way through a frantic finish full of missed opportunities. “Theyre terrific,” N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried said. “Obviously, when you have a year like theyre having, when youre undefeated youre going to have some close ones, some not-so-close ones. We just tried to prepare for them as best we could and I thought our guys did a great job.” Ralston Turner missed a 3 for N.C. State with 2:45 left with Syracuse clinging to a one-point lead, and then Fair was off on a hook driving across the lane. After N.C. States Anthony Barber hit the side of the backboard with a baseline jumper, Jerami Grant missed a spinning drive in the lane for Syracuse. Freshman point guard Tyler Ennis of Brampton, Ont., so cool and collected all year, then showed hes human, fouling Turner while shooting a 3, and he made all three free throws to give the Wolfpack a 55-53 lead with 62 seconds left. Fair sank 1 of 2 foul shots with 41.4 seconds remaining and N.C. States Desmond Lee then lost the ball out of bounds when he was double-teamed at midcourt. Ennis negated that turnover with a charge with 14.7 seconds left, but the Wolfpack couldnt close it out. Wolfpack star T.J. Warren was fouled in the back by Trevor Cooney and his shot went in, but the basket was waved off. The referees ruled the infraction occurred before the shot, forcing N.C. State to inbound the ball and setting up the winning trap in the corner. “That should have counted,” Gottfried said. “That was a made basket to put us up three with T.J. going to the line to go up four. That changed things.” Christmas had 14 points and set career highs with 12 rebounds and seven blocks as Syracuse earned its 10th single-digit win despite shooting 35.2 per cent. Grant had 12 points and 14 rebounds, and Fair scored 11 points on 5-of-16 shooting. “We keep our composure all the time,” Christmas said. “We dont let anything get to us.” After Fairs winning layup, Warren missed from the top of the key on one last try for N.C. State. Warren finished with 23 points, Kyle Washington had 14 and Turner 13 for the Wolfpack. Despite its torrid season, Syracuse (25-0, 12-0) is clinging to a half-game lead over Virginia in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Oranges start is the third-best in ACC history, behind only North Carolina State (27-0) in 1973 and North Carolina (32-0) in 1957. North Carolina State (16-9, 6-6) was looking for its seventh win over the nations No. 1 team. It got its last one just over a year ago, beating Duke 84-76. The Wolfpack, who had won five of six, shot 39 per cent (22 of 56) from the field. Syracuse was coming off a dramatic last-second victory at No. 25 Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. Ennis hit a 3-pointer from 35 feet as time expired to lift the Orange to a 58-56 road win. But the hostile Carrier Dome crowd of 31,572 didnt seem to faze the Wolfpack, who used Warrens big effort to hang right with Syracuse. He scored six straight points to start the second half and Washingtons hook in the lane gave N.C. State a 34-30 lead. Syracuse tied it at 34 on a slam by Christmas off an air ball by Fair from the right corner, and foul trouble on the Wolfpack hurt their chances. Grants follow off a miss by Christmas gave Syracuse its first lead of the second half at 40-39 with 9:19 left. There were seven ties and seven lead changes in the opening half, and the Wolfpack had the biggest advantage at 26-22 after a driving backdoor layup by Warren. A spinning drive through the lane and layup by Fair and a fast-break dunk by Cooney off a Wolfpack turnover in the closing 2:11 made it 26-26 at the break. It was Syracuses fourth crowd of more than 30,000 this season. Thats the most in any single season since Syracuse had six Carrier Dome crowds of more than 30,000 in 1990-91. The Indians scored twice in the top of the ninth, getting the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by closer Matt Lindstrom. Axford (0-1) came in seeking his fifth save in as many chances.COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the first four games of the season, just about everybody was playing well for Ohio State except LaQuinton Ross. On Saturday, he was one of the few Buckeyes who had a good game — and it made a world of difference. Ross scored four of his career-high 23 points in a 10-0 second-half run, leading No. 5 Ohio State past Central Connecticut State 74-56. “I knew I was going to come around eventually,” Ross said after hitting 9 of 13 shots from the field and adding six rebounds and an assist. “Ive been playing basketball all my life. Everybody goes through situations, struggles, out there on the court. It was just something I had to get through. I knew I would get through it eventually.” After shooting 22 per cent from the field at the start of the season, Ross is shooting 63 per cent over his last three games. On a day when the Buckeyes (8-0) were lethargic at both ends, his shooting kept them in the lead and eventually put the game out of reach. “Our mindset wasnt right,” said Lenzelle Smith, who scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half. “It was just us. We werent ready to play when we came out of the tunnel.” The Blue Devils (2-6) certainly were. Their 3-2 zone befuddled the Buckeyes. They got back quickly to snuff Ohio States transition game. And they took their time on offence, working for good shots while shooting 46 per cent for the game. “We came in here knowing Ohio State is as good as any team in the country,” coach Howie Dickenman said. “We wanted to gain some respect; I thought we gained some respect.” The Buckeyes had won the only previous meeting between the teams in the first round of the 2007 NCAA tournament. The top-ranked Buckeyes, behind Greg Odens 19 points and 10 rebounds, beat the Blue Devils 78-57. Ohio State would advance to the national championship game, losing to defending champion Florida. The Blue Devils scored six of the last eight points in the first half to cut a 14-point deficit to 38-29. “It was sarcasm and angry at the same time,” Ross said of coach Thad Mattas halftime talk in the locker room.dddddddddddd. “He tried to keep cool because he feels like were a veteran team and some of the mistakes we were making we shouldnt have made. I know for a fact he was upset. I think the whole team knew it.” Ahead 38-29 at the break, the Buckeyes had difficulty finishing off the pesky Blue Devils. The lead hovered around 10 points until Ohio State broke free from a 49-41 lead with a quick run. It started with a steal by Amedeo Della Valle that led to Smiths dunk. After a CCSU miss, Sam Thompson hit a baseline jumper and, following a Blue Devils turnover, Aaron Craft fought through the traffic in the lane for a spinning layup that made it 55-41 — matching Ohio States biggest lead to that point. Soon after, the Buckeyes forced a shot-clock violation and Ross muscled inside for a bucket. He then stole the ball near midcourt and drove coast to coast for another layup and an 18-point lead. The Blue Devils never seriously threatened again. Faronte Drakeford led them with 12 points and Matt Mobley added 10. CCSU outrebounded the Buckeyes 29-28 and didnt back down in the paint at either end. Matta said he hoped his team gained from the game. “Honestly, I said this is one we have to learn from it, but by the same token you have to wash it down the drain in the shower,” he said he told the team afterward. “We must be a better basketball team (in our next game) than we were today.” A crowd of 13,640 was as reserved as the Buckeyes most of the game. Maybe it was the lack of students, a midlevel opponent, the frosty weather outside or Ohio States impending Big Ten football championship game on Saturday night, but there were long stretches when the crowd was relatively quiet. Smith was asked if he would be watching the Buckeyes second-ranked football team go for the conference title in Indianapolis against Michigan State. “Absolutely!” he said with a laugh. ’ ’ ’ |
