BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic has withdrawn Carl Pelinis resignation as football coach and has fired him instead, saying they had cause to do so because he failed to report certain conduct of a member of his staff. The letter, dated Tuesday and sent to Pelinis home address by FAU Interim President Dennis Crudele, does not cite drug use as a reason for the firing. Pelini resigned Oct. 30 after FAU athletic director Patrick Chun said he and former defensive co-ordinator Pete Rekstis acknowledged using illegal drugs. Pelini denied that claim, though a member of his FAU staff assisted the schools investigation by writing an affidavit claiming to have personally witnessed him using marijuana and cocaine. Pelini eventually asked that the resignation be withdrawn and got his wish, though did not get his job back. “I recognize the importance to you of clarifying that you did not resign because you admitted to using illegal drugs, and that FAU did not terminate your employment because of a finding that you used illegal drugs,” Crudele wrote. “Accordingly, to clarify these significant points and to complete our discussions regarding your separation from employment at FAU, your resignation is withdrawn.” Crudele also told Pelini that FAU believes its officials acted properly with the way they handled the circumstances surrounding the coachs departure. The move means the former coach will not be asked for a $500,000 repayment the school could have demanded because he resigned, though it was unclear if the Owls would have pursued that fee anyway. It also lauds Pelini for the work he did with the Owls. FAU (5-6) is 3-0 since Pelini was replaced by interim coach Brian Wright, and could become bowl-eligible with a win in the regular-season finale against FIU. Crudele wrote to Pelini that the Owls finish this season “is a direct reflection of your good work.” Crudeles letter also indicates that Pelini has waived his right to appeal the firing. The Abbotsford Heat have played out of the 7,000-seat Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre since the franchise moved the Quad Cities Flames from Illinois for the 2009-10 season. Flames president and CEO Ken King explained some of the reasons for the decision in a statement. “The economics did not turn out the way any of us intended, despite the tremendous efforts of many men and women who made it their mission to convert the allegiances of local hockey fans, at least at the American Hockey League level, to the Heat,” explained King. “NNotwithstanding economics our experiences in the Fraser Valley have been good.dddddddddddd We have made good friends, have wonderful local partners and believe that our players have been served well in this market. Unfortunately the time has come for us to move on.” The Heat have already clinched a playoff spot this season and will make a postseason appearance for the third time in their five seasons in Abbotsford. They have made it to the second round twice. Abbotsford is the western-most franchise in the AHL and is the only team playing in the Pacific time zone. The Flames did not announce a new location for the team but said that several opportunities exist for the organization. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

The 2007 champion, who is returning to F1 after a three-year absence, steered his former Renault car around the Catalunya Circuit in 1 minute, 22.030 seconds in the fastest time of both sets of preseason tests in Barcelona. The Finnish driver completed 121 laps, the most for the day that saw good weather until a light shower just before the flag. Raikkonens strong run capped an almost perfect week for Lotus, which had the fastest lap on three of the four test days thanks to Romain Grosjean topping the grid on Thursday and Friday. Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel was last in the field of 11 drivers due to a series of problems with his Red Bull car and only completed a session low 23 laps. “This morning I had an issue, I went off track and broke the front wing and had to come in,” Vettel said. “It took quite a while to get back out and then just beefore lunch we had a problem with the gearbox so it upset the whole day.dddddddddddd After that there wasnt much we could constructively do.” Ferraris Fernando Alonso had the second best lap at 0.220 seconds off the pace. Lewis Hamilton guided his McLaren to the sixth quickest time in 115 laps while trying out its new aerodynamic upgrade before it sprung a small hydraulic leak near the end of the session. Seven-time champion Michael Schumacher of Mercedes recorded the eighth best time. “After four intensive days of testing this week, we are soon heading to Australia and its really time for the season to start,” Schumacher said. “The field is tighter than it has been, so we are looking forward to an exciting season.” The Australian GP is on March 18. PHILADELPHIA – The Los Angeles Kings improved their play after blowing a two-goal lead on the road. A little experience goes a long way. Dwight King scored a tiebreaking goal midway through the third period, leading the Kings to a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night. Jeff Carter and Justin Williams scored in the second for the Kings, who won their third straight and 11th in 14 games while remaining in third place in the Pacific Division. Matt Read and Jakub Voracek had Philadelphias goals. The Flyers had won five in a row, but they dropped to 12-3-1 in their last 16 games while falling to third place in the Metropolitan Division, one point behind the Rangers. Los Angeles had a 2-0 lead entering the final period, but Philadelphia tied it at 2 before Kings winning score with 9:24 remaining. “Weve been a team thats played together for a lot of years and have been through a lot, so were a mentally strong team,” Kings centre Mike Richards said. “We can battle back after that.” The winning goal started with a Flyers turnover just outside their zone. Slava Voynov raced down the right side, creating a 2-on-1 with King. King took Voynovs perfectly placed cross-ice pass and beat Ray Emery high on the stick side on a forehand from close range. “It settled our game back to where it needed to be and pushed their game down a level,” Kings captain Dustin Brown said. Carter opened the scoring 1:49 into the second period with a wrist shot from the left circle. Alec Martinez took the initial shot from the point, and it deflected off the skate of defenceman Mark Streit and right to Carter. It looked as if Vincent Lecavalier had tied it a minute later, but his shot to a wide-open net went off the right post, then the crossbar and finally the left post. The goal light went on and the arena horn blared signalling a goal, but officials never stopped play. The officials no-goal ruling was later upheld by replay. Williams then scored with 2:31 remaining in the period when he finished a backhander after Emery gave up a bad rebound. The Kings also had a goal disallowed in the period when Martinezs apparent tally was waved off because Carter cross-checked Kimmo Timonen in front of Emery just prior to Martinezs shot. Los Angeles dominated the period, outshooting Philadelphia 20-9. Philadelphia pulled within a goal just 29 seconds into the third period when Read was credited for a score when the puck deflected off the skate of defenceman Jake Muzzin. Voracek provided the equalizer with 11:42 remaining in the third period when he deflected home Scott Hartnells shot from the point after the Kings turned it over in their zone. But Kings goal was too much for Philadelphia to overcome. “We played a good road game,” Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. “We need the points, just like they do. We knew were coming into a tough place and we played good. Were just trying to make the playoffs.” So are the Flyers, who are at the Rangers on Wednesday. Coach Craig Berube will be looking for a better effort than he saw in the opening two periods against the Kings. “For the first 40 minutes, we didnt compete hard enough,” Berube said. “We let them outwork us. That was the difference in the game.” Emery started in place of Steve Mason. It was just the third start and fourth appearance for Emery in the last 18 games. Emery was sidelined for five of those games with a lower body injury suffered Feb. 27 against San Jose. He finished with 38 saves. Jonathan Quick made 30 saves for Los Angeles. Carter and Richards, both former Flyers, were booed every time they touched the puck in the first period. The duo, who helped the Kings win the Stanley Cup in 2012, were traded after the 2011 season. Carter was playing against his former club in Philadelphia for the first time. Williams also is a former Flyer. And this time, shes ready to stay there for a while. Lewis won the ShopRite LPGA Classic on Sunday to take the top spot in the world ranking from Inbee Park, finishing with a 4-under 67 for a six-stroke victory. No. 1 for four weeks early last year, Lewis ended Parks 59-week run in the top spot. “It feels great,” Lewis said. “I feel like Ive played a lot of good, consistent golf over the last year and I felt like I deserve to be here. I didnt feel like I stumbled into it.” Lewis finished at 16-under 197 on the Bay Course at Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club and earned $225,000 for her second victory of the year and 10th overall. Also the 2012 winner at Seaview, she won the North Texas LPGA Shootout last month after finishing second six times in her previous 16 events since winning the Womens British Open in August. She joins Sorenstam (1998, 2002, 2005), Juli Inkster (1986, 1988) and Betsy King (1987, 1995, 2001) as the only multiple winners in the tournament. “Thats a pretty good list of people there,” Lewis said. “Thats not too bad. Wow, thats really cool.” Christina Kim was second after a 72, marking her best finish since 2010. Park closed with a 70 to tie for eighth at 7 under. Shes winless in 10 tour starts this season after sweeping the first three majors last year and finishing the season with six victories. “It is a little bit relief not to have the big heavy crown on my head,” Park said. “Its not the end of the world.” Lewis finished a stroke off the tournament scoring record set by Annika Sorenstam in 1998 and 2005. The 29-year-old Texan opened with a 67 and had a 63 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over Kim into the final round. On Sunday, she was hardly threatened, using birdies on the third and fourth holes to open up a two-stroke lead before picking up two more consecutive birdies to open the back nine — holing a 25-fooot putt on No.dddddddddddd. 10 and a 15-footer on No. 11. Despite her first bogey in 42 holes at No. 12 and then missing two short putts on No. 17 for another bogey, Lewis had built up enough of a cushion to cruise home with the largest margin of victory in the tournaments 26-year history. “I dont know what it is about this place,” Lewis said. “Its just really special to me. Ive played some really good golf here, and its just mind-boggling to think I have 10 wins.” Jennifer Johnson (72), Haeji Kang (69), Anna Nordqvist (70) and Gerina Piller (70) tied for third at 9 under. Johnson opened with a course-record 62 and followed with 70 for a spot in Sundays final pairing with Lewis and Kim. But the 22-year-old Californian had a double bogey and two bogeys on the back nine to fall out of contention. Kim had a run of three straight birdies on No. 9-11, but shot 3 over on the final seven holes, including a double bogey on 18. “I hadnt been in contention in a while so I kind of forgot what it was like having nerves,” Kim said. “And it kind of showed on the last hole.” Lewis smiled and pumped her fist to the crowd as she walked down the fairway at 18, relishing her new place atop the world ranking. Her brief stay as No. 1 last year was a rocky one, with Lewis admitting that she had trouble dealing with the extra obligations that came with the top spot. “With a good team of people around me,” Lewis believes shes more prepared to handle those duties and be the face of the LPGA Tour. “The last time it was taken away from me in an off-week when we werent even playing, so Im definitely just not going to take it for granted and really enjoy it this time. Now I know all the extra things that come along with it. But Im ready for it this time.” Karrie Webb, last years champion, tied for eighth after a 67. Third-ranked Lydia Ko bounced back from a second-round 75 to shoot 69 and finish at 1 under. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

TORONTO — It was such a bad first period, the Toronto Maple Leafs figured they couldnt duplicate the disaster. They were right in that they responded to coach Randy Carlyles goaltending switch to erase a two-goal deficit. Ultimately Toronto lost 5-4 in a shootout to the Detroit Red Wings in a preview of the Winter Classic, but it was the battling back to get a point that had them feeling slightly more upbeat than usual after a defeat. “Well take the point,” captain Dion Phaneuf said. “Coming back, I feel that was a big step for our team to come back against a team that doesnt really give up a whole lot. We did a lot of really good things tonight.” The good things for the Leafs (18-16-4) came in the second and third periods when they got goals from Phaneuf and Joffrey Lupul to tie the score and then one from the much-maligned David Clarkson to take the lead. That was a complete reversal from the first period, when they squandered the opening goal from defenceman Cody Franson and gave up three goals in 9 minutes 11 seconds to Pavel Datsyuk, Joakim Andersson and Tomas Jurco. “We score the first goal and then we basically stood around for the rest of the period and watched them do their thing,” Carlyle said. “They out-competed us badly in the first period.” Starting goaltender James Reimer gave up those three goals on 12 first-period shots. He got the hook in favour of Jonathan Bernier at the first intermission, after Carlyle noticed rebounds bouncing away from Reimer and wasnt happy with Anderssons goal going off his stick and in and Jurco shooting the puck through him. Reimer was understandably unhappy with Carlyles decision, which he respected, and also with his performance. “Definitely not what we had in mind, what I had in mind,” said Reimer, who was making a third straight start for the first time this season. “They just scored a couple too many goals. Obviously the second one, that cant go in. It was obviously my fault, a hundred per cent. And the third one, they made a nice play, but I think thats one that I can get done on some days, too.” The Leafs looked like a completely different team in the second period in front of Bernier. Carlyle was pleased at how his players got pucks deep, cycled, drew penalties and managed to draw even in the game by scoring twice on former Toronto goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, who wound up giving up four goals on 23 shots. “I dont think I had my best game tonight, at least we were able to step up there and get the win,” Gustavsson said. Phaneuf said he and his teammates talked about having a better effort in the second period. That showed, and when Clarkson scored 8:32 into the third period Carlyle hoped that kind of “dirty” goal would be able to carry the Leafs. Instead, the Red Wings (17-12-9) were able to tie it on a goal by Tomas Tatar at 13:44 when Niklas Kronwall won a blue-line puck battle against Phil Kessel. “We made a mistake and we couldnt get a puck out along the wall, guy got in behind us, a rebound and then we lost in a shootout,” Carlyle said in summing up the Leafs sixth loss in their past seven games. “I think that the way that game developed in the evening, I think we were fortunate to get a point.” The Red Wings felt fortunate to win in the shootout on goals by Datsyuk and former Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson. It was their first victory that way this season after losing their first six shootouts. “It was a mental block for us, shootouts, and to win this one tonight hopefully we can put that behind us and start winning a few,” said Alfredsson, who scored the winner. “Winning in overtime last game and now winning in a shootout tonight lessens the grip on the stick next time around.” Mike Babcock, coach of the Red Wings and Team Canada, pointed out that he doesnt get so hung up on the shootout performance. But hell take the points from this one, Detroits second straight victory following a six-game losing streak. “I think were a pretty even-keeled group,” Babcock said. “We just keep on keeping on. Were going to be fine here in the end. Weve got to get players back and then well start playing with some speed and confidence and tempo and everything.” The Red Wings were playing without injured captain Henrik Zetterberg (back), goaltender Jimmy Howard (knee), centre Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) and forwards Gustav Nyquist (groin), Johan Franzen (concussion) and Justin Abdelkader (concussion). They got defenceman Danny DeKeyser back after missing 15 games with a shoulder injury. Carlyle saw similarities between the two teams because the Leafs are still without centres Tyler Bozak (oblique) and Dave Bolland (severed tendon in ankle). But the rest of the team is in tact, and players have been quick to brush injuries off as an excuse. The problem Saturday night wasnt lacking players as much as it was another poor start after Fransons goal 7:15 in. “I didnt think we were ready and we came out a little bit sloppy,” said Clarkson, whose go-ahead goal was just his third of the season. “When you allow a team with that much skill and talent to get ahead of you, its hard to battle back, but I think we showed something tonight by battling back. Weve got to be ready from the drop of the puck, be ready to play the way we know we can, the way we did in the second and third.” The Leafs play for the final 40 minutes of regulation represented the biggest positive of the night, which was a chance for the teams to feel each other out before meeting in the Winter Classic Jan. 1 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. That game is too far from now for either Toronto or Detroit to focus on. The Leafs concern was about their good and bad effort that led to this shootout loss. “It takes a toll on you trying to dig out of a two-goal hole like that,” said Lupul, who had a goal and an assist. “If we take one thing from the game, its probably get off to a little better start.” NOTES — Kessel was held without a goal for the eighth time in 10 games since Bozak went out with his oblique injury. The star winger has two goals and five assists in that time. Defencemen Mark Fraser and Paul Ranger and forward Frazer McLaren were healthy scratches for the Leafs for the second straight game. LOS ANGELES — After being thoroughly outplayed for over 40 minutes, the Los Angeles Clippers fought back. Leading the way was a player not known for coming up big in the clutch. Darren Collison scored eight of his 18 points in the final 2:58, rallying the Clippers past the Oklahoma City Thunder 101-99 on Sunday to tie the Western Conference semifinal series 2-2. “Even though we didnt play well throughout the game, we were able to get a win,” Collison said. “That feels more impressive than anything we did.” Russell Westbrook, who scored 27 points, missed a 3-pointer and Serge Ibakas tip attempt was too late at the buzzer, allowing the Clippers to salvage a game they trailed until the final 1:23. “It was a good look,” Westbrook said. “Just didnt go in.” Blake Griffin led Los Angeles with 25 points, making 9 of 11 free throws. Jamal Crawford added 18 points. DeAndre Jordan had 14 rebounds, helping the Clippers win the boards, 45-43 — the first time in 11 playoff games the Thunder were outrebounded. “We just willed this one. We found a way,” said Chris Paul, who had 23 points and 10 assists. Kevin Durant scored 40 points, hitting 15 of 18 free throws, for the Thunder. “We let this one slip away,” he said. “We could have took control of the series.” Game 5 is Tuesday night in Oklahoma City. “We were almost on the mat and we got off of it. We didnt get pinned,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. “Theyre seething right now. They had an opportunity to go up 3-1 and now its an even series.” It was the 14th comeback — and largest yet — by the Clippers this season after trailing by double digits. They rallied from 12 points down in the second quarter of Game 7 to oust Golden State in the first round. “This is one of the best ones yet,” Paul said. “Darren Collison was amazing. You just got to love a guy like that who plays with so much heart and never gives up.” The Clippers had no answer for Durant and Westbrook until midway through the fourth quarter. That dynamic duo drove the lane with abandon, drew fouls and made free throws in leading the Thunder to an early 22-point lead. Durants three-point play early in the fourth extended the Thunders lead to 15 points, and they were still up by 10 with 7:44 to go. But the comeback Clippers were not to be denied. “Everybody kept telling each other, Chip away, chip away,” Griffin said. “That was kind of our mentality for the rest of the game. We just kept fighting.” The Clippers stole a page out of the Thunders playbook, switching to a smaller lineup that included Collison and Danny Granger, who helped disrupt the Thunders rebounding late. Paul willed his team back into it, scoring six straight points to get the Clippers within six. Griffin, who was saddled with five fouls, made three of four free throws before Collison got hot. “The whole time Im thinking, We cant be down 3-1, we just cant be down 3-1 going to Oklahoma,” Collison said. With the game tied at 97, Collison scored the Clippers final four points on layups. Crawford passed to a streaking Collison for a fast-break conversion on the second one for a 101-97 lead with 32 seconds left. Westbrook scored for the Thunder, but after Griffin missed, Westbrook did too to end the game. “Did that really just happen?” a still stunned Crawford said. Paul missed all five of his shots in the third, when Griffin picked up three fouls to give him five, and Crawford and Jordan each got their third. Ibaka, who shot 9 of 10 in the Thunders Game 3 win, got his fourth foul, along with Westbrook in the third. The Clippers came as close as eight points before Reggie Jacksons 3-pointer beat the shot clock to keep the Thunder ahead 75-63 going into the fourth. The Thunder had the Clippers on their heels from the opening tip, with Oklahoma City shooting 65 per cent in building a 22-point lead. Oklahoma City outscored the Clippers 32-15 in the first; the fewest points theyve allowed in a quarter of a playoff game. The Spain international will miss Spanish league games against Almeria and Valladolid, but should be back for the Champions league match against Manchester City on March 12.Spain aims to stay alive against Chile (TSN 1050, TSN 690, TSN 1260, TEAM 1410) Spain enters its second Group B match against Chile on Wednesday at the Maracana in desperate need of a response. The defending champions suffered an embarrassing 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Netherlands in their opening match, and another loss to Chile on Wednesday would bring an extremely premature end to their tournament. After taking the lead against the Dutch with a penalty kick from Xabi Alonso in the 27th minute, Spain fell apart and watched as Robin van Persie equalized shortly before halftime. The second half was a nightmare for Vicente del Bosques team as they saw the Netherlands score four unanswered goals, including a pair of gifts from goalkeeper Iker Casillas. Whether or not the veteran Casillas returns to the lineup in goal will be a tough decision for Del Bosque to make, but the coach feels as though his team has had time to get over the loss and get prepared for the next two games. “Everyone feels that we are capable of turning things around,” Del Bosque told Spanish television channel Cuatro. “Many hours have passed and our spirits are higher. We now have to win our next two games, which wont be easy, but is within the realms of possibility. We are searching for the best possible preparation and we are trying to make sure the players are not sad, we have to enjoy ourselves.” The Spanish side still possesses plenty of talent, but La Roja must find a way to raise their game if they want to avoid a stunningly early exit from the tournament. Chile, meanwhile, enjoyed a positive start to the competition by securing a 3-1 win over Australia that saw the club net two goals in the opening 15 minutes. Alexis Sanchez scored in the 12th minute and Eduardo Vargas doubled the lead in the 14th to put Chile in firm control. Australia pulled a goal back through Tim Cahill in the 35th, but Chiles Jean Beausejour finally killed the match off by scoring late to secure the win. Viewed as a real threat to advance to the knockout round, Chile can put itself in position to win the group if the team is able to topple Spain, which would send the Spanish home early. But Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal has his sights set a bit higher. “We hope to play well against Spain, take the three points, and if we knock them out that would be great,” Vidal said. “But wwe didnt come here to knock out Spain, we came here to win the World Cup.dddddddddddd.” Cameroon, Croatia aim to rebound in Group A (TSN 1050, TSN 1200, TEAM 1410) Croatia and Cameroon will both be fighting to stay alive in Group A on Wednesday when the two sides meet up at the Arena Amazonia. Both teams lost their opening match of the tournament with Croatia falling 3-1 to Brazil in the curtain-raising contest, while Cameroon dropped a 1-0 decision to Mexico the following day. Those results mean that the loser of Wednesdays contest will be eliminated after just two games, while the winner would put itself back in contention for a place in the next round. A draw would keep both sides alive, but would leave them with a lot of work to do in their final match. Croatia was expected to challenge for a spot in the last 16 and certainly turned in an encouraging performance against tournament-favorites Brazil. Niko Kovac saw his side take a surprising 1-0 lead in the 11th minute on an own goal from Brazil defender Marcelo before the hosts rebounded to level the match at 1-1 midway through the opening half through Neymar. The game was there for the taking as it entered the final 20 minutes, but a questionable penalty call handed Brazil the chance to take the lead when Fred went down under minimal contact from Croatia defender Dejan Lovren. Neymar converted the subsequent spot kick to put the Brazilians in front, and Oscar added a third in injury time to account for a flattering final score. Although Croatia came away from the game with zero points, Kovac didnt seem to be the least bit disappointed by the result. “We left an excellent impression, hats off to the lads,” Kovac said after the match. “Its an honor to coach them.” Cameroon will also be looking to bounce back after falling to El Tri on a second-half goal from Oribe Peralta. The Indomitable Lions were a bit fortunate to only lose 1-0 as Mexicos Giovani Dos Santos had two goals called off in the first half, illustrating a need for Cameroon to elevate its level of play on Wednesday, especially since it will face Brazil in its final group match. A win for Croatia would likely set up a game with Mexico that would decide second place in the group, but first Kovac and his men must take care of business against Cameroon, which could benefit from the humid conditions in Manaus. Téma: Jak postupovat / first-round match wi

After every game the players and coaches sit down and take a look at the video and evaluate the players, game plan, and execution. As analysts we do the same thing, so here are some observations from week one. First there were two major upsets. I should say, major upsets in the eyes of the fans and prognosticators. It is safe to say that the two winning teams involved were confident they were better than people said leading up to the first week of the regular season. The biggest of the two upsets was when the Bombers handed it to Ricky Ray and the Toronto Argonauts. The game kicked off Thursday a couple of days after TSNs top fifty players were announced, where Ray was named the best player in the CFL. However, Ray was not the best quarterback on Thursday night, Drew Willy, who was starting just his 5th game in the CFL, outplayed the Argo quarterback. Willy finished the night throwing for 308 yards and four touchdowns with just one interception, better numbers than any of the week one starters. Bo Levi Mitchell threw for five more yards in Calgarys game versus Montreal but finished with half the touchdown passes. Willy was the best of the young guns in week one, so much so fans in Winnipeg were calling it Willypeg. The second upset was when Edmonton went into BC Place and beat the Lions by seven points. Odds makers heading into the season had the Lions as the early favorites to win the Grey Cup, those odds may change after week one. Almost ever expert across the country was predicting that the West would be a three horse race between BC, Calgary and Saskatchewan, and that still may be the case. However, week one proved that the Bombers and Esks may have something to say about that and may just join that race. It looks like perennial all-star, Korey Banks days in Winnipeg are over. Sources said that Banks may have been sore from camp but wasnt hurt enough to keep him out of the line up. Therefore, the fact he didnt play was a coaches decision and because of that Banks has asked to be released. Ottawa may be a good fit for the veteran, and if he did end up in the Nations capitol it would mean he would be returning to where his career began back in 2004. He played two years in Ottawa and in 2005 recorded ten interceptions. Banks played linebacker his last five years in BC and during that time registered that same total of INTs. If Ottawa did want to kick the tires on Banks, Rick Campbell may want to look at him as a defensive back, possibly free safety. The new rule change where by defensive pass interference is now reviewable, was tested in week one, when Bomber head coach Michael OShea challenged a missed call in the game versus the Argos. Despite the fact that there are still a couple of coaches that are not completely convinced the change is a good idea, the challenge process was successful. There was no flag on the play and OShea challenged and won. It was a missed call that was corrected and a game changer, when the ball was placed on the one yard line and the Bombers scored on the next play. In the end the right call was made, and if hypothetically that was inside of a minute in the Grey Cup and the Bombers were down by four, a championship game would not be tainted by a controversial call. Case in point Montreal versus Hamilton in last years eastern semi final. Those coaches that are still not convinced have yet to give a solid argument as to why they dont like it. The current objections still include, it will slow the pace of the game, or “It just doesnt seem right.” In Winnipeg the challenge wasnt longer than the average challenge and, with all due respect, because, “it doesnt seem right,” really isnt an argument against this rule change. In Saskatchewan, the defending champions seem to have found a replacement for last years Grey Cup MVP Kory Sheets. It looks like Anthony Allen, who racked up 158 yards on 27 carries versus the Ti-Cats has won the audition to replace Sheets. The Riders are proving the old adage in football, that says games are won and lost in the trenches. It doesnt seem to matter who carries the ball behind that offensive line in Saskatchewan, and on the other side of the ball the defensive front dominated generating 10 sacks. Yes that is not a miss print, the Rider front seven got to Zach Collaros ten times. And finally, the hit by Montreals Kyries Hebert on Jon Cornish will certainly draw supplementary discipline from the league. Hebert is a hard hitting player, but does not have a history of crossing the line and playing dirty, so expect the linebacker/safety to be fined and not suspended. It wont be a complete shock however, if Hebert is suspended for one game, in that he clearly made a choice to hit Cornish high. The game is fast and both players were going full speed but when looking at the reply Hebert could have simply tackled Cornish so, therefore, it appears he made the choice to go high. Again he isnt a player with a track record of cheap shots so a fine from the league as a warning seems the right course of action. Most importantly, Jon Cornish, one of the games biggest stars appears to be ok. Ottawa will play its season opener in week two when they travel to Winnipeg. Drew Willy and the red hot Bombers will be a challenge, but wouldnt it be an interesting start to the season if Henry Burris led the Red Blacks to a win in their first game making Ottawa the first team from the east to win a game. Week two kicks off Thursday night. . Others said it felt like they were playing tennis in a sauna, or on a frying pan that sizzled their soles. The scorching heat on Day 2 thinned crowds at Melbourne Park and prompted players to cool off between points with bags of ice on their heads or draped over their necks. Little relief was expected this week, with similar heat forecast until Friday Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic said he started feeling dizzy in the first set of his match against Benoit Paire and then collapsed in the next set. “I couldnt keep my balance anymore and I leaned over the fence, and when I woke up people were all around me,” he said. After receiving medical attention, he returned to the match and lost in straight sets. “Its hazardous to be out there. Its dangerous,” Dancevic said, criticizing the tournament for not having suspended play. “Until somebody dies, theyre just going to keep playing matches in this heat.” The tournament has not yet invoked its “Extreme Heat Policy,” saying the decision is based on a quotient of air temperature, humidity and wind speed. Officials have played down health risks, saying the majority of matches were completed without calls for medical attention. “Of course there were a few players who experienced heat-related illness or discomfort, but none required significant medical intervention after they had completed their match,” Tim Wood, the tournaments chief medical officer, said in a statement. A ball girl was treated for heat stresss during a morning match, and the tournament shortened rotations for the ball kids to 45-minute shifts.dddddddddddd Players used metaphors and anecdotes to describe how hot it was. “I put the (water) bottle down on the court and it started melting a little bit underneath — the plastic. So you know it was warm,” former No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki said. “It felt like I was playing in a sauna.” Wozniacki was luckier than most. She had a straight sets win in the morning when it was 38C (100F). Sometimes a hot breeze stirred the air, making things worse, said No. 13-seeded John Isner, who retired from his first-round match with a right ankle injury. “It was like an oven — when I open the oven and the potatoes are done. Thats what its like,” Isner said. Two-time defending champion Victoria Azarenka agreed. “It felt pretty hot, like youre dancing in a frying pan or something like that,” she said after advancing to the second round. Always cool under pressure, Roger Federer avoided touching the hot ground at changeovers by sitting on his bench with his feet up on a towel. The 17-time Grand Slam winner advanced to the second round, saying for him the heat was “just a mental thing.” No. 4 Andy Murray struck a more sober tone. “As much as its easy to say the conditions are safe,” Murray said, “It only takes one bad thing to happen.” “It looks terrible for the whole sport when people are collapsing, ball kids are collapsing, people in the stands are collapsing,” the Wimbledon champion said. "Thats obviously not great. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

NEW YORK — New York Islanders coach Jack Capuano asked for more than just offence from his top line when they took on the rival New York Rangers. John Tavares, Thomas Vanek and Kyle Okposo were also being counted on to slow down sizzling Rangers forward Rick Nash. That plan didnt go so well early. Nash scored twice in the first period, but the Islanders erased a two-goal deficit for the second straight day and beat the Rangers 5-3 on Tuesday night. “There was a time during the first period that I was going to probably break that line up,” Capuano said, “but I wanted to see how they handled it. I thought they responded as the game went on and did a good job.” Nash didnt do any more damage, Vanek scored the tiebreaking power-play goal with 4:38 left, Tavares had three assists, and Okposo added two as the Islanders won for the ninth time in 11 road games. The Islanders have won two of the first three meetings with the Rangers. The teams will play twice more in the next 10 days, including outdoors at Yankee Stadium. “Division games are huge this time of year. Its nice to beat these guys,” Tavares said. “They got those two early goals, but I think for the most part we were the better team. We did a good job … and finished off the game. Big win. Character win.” Vanek capped the comeback as the Rangers were trying to kill a penalty for too many men. Colin McDonald and defenceman Thomas Hickey scored in the second period to get the Islanders even. Matt Martin scored a rare goal in the first, and Frans Nielsen added an empty-netter. Kevin Poulin made 30 saves in front of a nearly full crowd on a snowy night in New York. “The secondary guys came up big,” Capuano said. “Our top line struggled a little bit in the first, but they came around. Your best players have got to be your best players. We were fortunate with that break with the too many men, but we were able to capitalize.” Nash posted his second straight multigoal game, and Chris Kreider added a goal for the Rangers, who had won three in a row. Cam Talbot made 32 saves while subbing for Henrik Lundqvist, who missed the game due to illness. It was the first time in eight games the Rangers allowed more than two goals. “We wanted the two points, and we put ourselves in a good position to get them,” Nash said. “We didnt get the job done.” The Rangers pressed hard in the final minute after Talbot was pulled for an extra skater, but couldnt tie it. Unlike Monday in a 4-3 shootout win at home over Philadelphia, the Islanders didnt wait until the third period to tie it. “It was a good win,” Capuano said, “but weve got a stretch coming up where weve got to make sure that were focused and were committed and doing the right things.” After Kreider restored the Rangers two-goal lead at 9:34 of the second with a power-play goal, Hickey began the comeback with his fourth of the season off a perfect feed from Okposo with 6:38 left in the period. Just 3:14 later, McDonald got to a rebound off a hard shot by Tavares and fired a drive that beat Talbot for his fourth of the season to tie it. “Youre up 3-1 and you think maybe you can get through the period and play a good solid third, but we didnt,” forward Brad Richards said. “We made some mistakes. Some nights other teams will capitalize, and some nights you get away with it. We didnt get away with it.” For the second straight game, Nash struck quickly and gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Nash took a pass from behind the net from Kreider and wristed a shot past Poulin at 1:02 - 8 seconds faster than Sunday when he put New York in front against Washington. The Islanders put lots of pressure on the Rangers in their end, but couldnt get a shot past Talbot. When Okposo failed to cleanly handle a pass near the right circle, Rangers defenceman Dan Girardi spotted Nash alone at centre ice and sent a pass to him. Nash received the puck with his back to the Islanders net, and quickly turned up ice and came in on a breakaway. Nash shifted the puck several times on his stick before sliding a shot in at 11:07 for his 16th of the season, fifth in three games, and ninth in nine games. The Islanders got one back with 2:38 left in the first when Martin took a pass in the slot from Tavares and scored his third of the season. NOTES: Martin went 38 games without a goal, dating to Nov. 1 at Ottawa. Hickey netted his first in 12 games, dating to Dec. 29 at Minnesota. … Nash netted the winning goal in the previous four games in which he scored. … The Rangers signed G David Leneveu to back up Talbot. Freiburg midfielder Felix Klaus scored in the last minute as his side twice came from behind to climb provisionally out of the relegation zone. The Columbus Blue Jackets will try to build off the first playoff victory in club history when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins in Mondays Game 3 battle at Nationwide Arena. Columbus had been 0-5 all-time in postseason games before taking Game 2 in Pittsburgh on Saturday with a 4-3 double-overtime decision. The victory not only ended the Blue Jackets playoff win drought, but also tied this best-of- seven series against the heavily-favored Penguins at one game apiece. Matt Calverts second goal of the contest, coming at 1:10 of the second overtime, gave Columbus its first-ever playoff victory. The Blue Jackets are playing in just their second postseason since entering the league as an expansion club for the 2000-01 campaign. Columbus first made the playoffs in 2009, but was swept in four games by Detroit. Brandon Dubinsky fought off Pens forward Jussi Jokinen behind the net and fed the puck in front to Cam Atkinson, who missed from point-blank range on the right side. However, the rebound came out to Calvert, who made no mistake from the left wing. “Its a big win for our hockey team and a lot of people back in Columbus who are devoted to this organization,” noted Blue Jackets head coach Todd Richards. Jack Johnson and Ryan Johansen added tallies with David Savard contributing two assists for the Blue Jackets. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 39 pucks to record his first playoff win after nine appearances and three losses. The 2013 Vezina Trophy winner was 0-2 in seven postseason appearances — three starts - during his time with the Philadelphia Flyers and fell to 0-3 after Wednesdays Game 1 loss in Pittsburgh. Brian Gibbons picked up a pair of first-period scores for the Penguins, who entered this postseason as winners of the Metropolitan Division and the second-best team in the East. Matt Niskanen also lit the lamp and Sidney Crossby netted two helpers for the Penguins, who have dropped their last three multiple-overtime contests.dddddddddddd Marc Andre Fleury halted 41 shots in defeat. Pittsburgh overcame a 3-1 deficit to take Game 1 by a 4-3 score, but on Saturday it was the Blue Jackets who successfully mounted a comeback. The Pens led 2-0 less than five minutes into the game and carried a 3-1 lead into the second period, but then went the final 63 minutes, 18 seconds of Game 2 without a goal. “I think its a missed opportunity,” Niskanen said. “Were at home, Game 2, were having a great first period, we have a two-goal lead. Were in complete control of the hockey game and whether its a mistake or them capitalizing on an opportunity, the momentum changes and it took us a while to get back to playing.” Calvert scored a short-handed goal at 7:31 of the second period and Jack Johnsons power-play tally tied it at 3-3 with 6:01 remaining in regulation. “The short-handed goal for us was, I thought, the difference maker in the game. It gave hope to our guys,” Richards. “You could feel it on the bench. From that moment on I thought we played a very strong game.” Pittsburgh finished 16 points ahead of fourth-place Columbus in the Metropolitan and also went 5-0-0 against the Blue Jackets during the 2013-14 season series. However, the Jackets now have a chance to take control of the series with it all tied up and Games 3 and 4 being played at Nationwide Arena. The Blue Jackets went 22-15-4 as the host this season, but Pittsburgh was 3-0 at Nationwide Arena this season and outscored Columbus 10-4 in those games. Columbus has played the first two games without forward Nick Foligno, but he is expected to play in tonights Game 3. Foligno was tied for fourth on the team with 18 goals in 70 games this season. Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday evening in Columbus. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

WASHINGTON - Ian Desmond keyed a 15-hit attack with a three-run homer, Stephen Strasburg pitched six solid innings and the Washington Nationals defeated the Texas Rangers 9-2 on Friday night. Jayson Werth and Denard Span had three hits each for Washington, which had lost 6 of 7. Previously slumping, Washingtons offence has 14 runs and 30 hits in its last two games. Strasburg (4-4) allowed two unearned runs, though his error led to them, and six hits. He struck out nine and walked one. It was the eighth straight start in which Strasburg has pitched at least six innings and allowed three runs or less. He improved his ERA to a season-low 3.15. Adrian Beltre had three hits for Texas, which fell to 6-3 on its 11-game road trip. Rangers starter Colby Lewis (4-4) allowed six runs, five earned, and nine hits in taking his first road loss. Strasburg had thrown 88 pitches when manager Matt Williams lifted him in the sixth for a pinch-hitter with two outs and two on. The moved paid off when Tyler Moores double to left scored both runners, increasing Washingtons lead to 6-2. The Nationals added two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. Washington trailed 2-0 in the fourth when Werth and Adam LaRoche singled with one out. Lewis struck out Wilson Ramos, but Desmond sent a 1-0 fastball into the seats in centre field for his 10th home run. Span used his speed to make it 4-2 after he singled in the fifth. Running on the pitch, he kept going around second on Anthony Rendons grounder to third. First baseman Mitch Morelands throw back to the third was wild and Span scored on the error. Texas took the lead during a bizarre second inning. Beltre doubled leading off, but Strasburg stuck out the next two hitters and should have been out of the inning when Leonys Martin hit a slow bouncer to the mound. The ball bounced off Strasburgs glove, then his head, and fell to the ground. He still had a chance to get Martin but missed a stab at the ball. Martin was safe on the error with Beltre moving to third. Strasburg then surrendered RBI singles to the Nos. 8 and 9 hitters, Rougned Odor and Lewis. Lewis hit snapped an 0-for-23 stretch by Rangers pitchers going back to June 20, 2012. NOTES: Texas was making its second trip back to its original home city since the franchise left Washington in 1971. Texas took 2 of 3 from the Nationals in June 2008. . Rangers RH Yu Darvish, scratched from his start on Tuesday night because of neck discomfort, remains on track to pitch Sunday after throwing a side session Friday. . Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman (broken right thumb) began a rehab assignment Friday night with at Class A Potomac. . Williams said LHP Gio Gonzalez (left shoulder inflammation) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Friday. He will pitch a simulated game Sunday and if all goes well, a rehab start next week. . Desmond (77) moved ahead of Adam Dunn for second on Nationals all-time home run list. Zimmerman leads with 181. . Rangers RHP Nick Tepesch (2-0, 2.95) opposes RHP Doug Fister (2-1, 3.42) on Saturday. Michigan rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit and wrested first place in the Big Ten from its in-state rival. “I just came out with the mindset in the second half that I wasnt going to be stopped,” Stauskas said. “Once I made a couple shots, it kept going from there.” Caris LeVert added 23 points for the Wolverines (19-7, 11-3), who won both regular-season meetings against Michigan State and six of the last eight games in the series. The Spartans (22-6, 11-4) started well, but were only up 36-34 at halftime. Then Stauskas and LeVert led a second-half charge. The Wolverines trailed 52-51 before going on a 13-0 run that sent the Crisler Center crowd into delirium. Michigan scored 45 points in the second half Sunday — after blitzing the Spartans for 50 after halftime in an 80-75 win in East Lansing last month. “The first game, I was very proud of our effort. This game, we looked tired,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. “Im not very proud of our effort.” Gary Harris scored 21 points for the Spartans. The victory gives Michigan a chance to earn its second Big Ten title in three years after tying for the championship in 2012. The Wolverines have home games against Minnesota and Indiana, as well as trips to Purdue and Illinois. Michigan State has home games against Illinois and Iowa followed by a trip to Ohio State. Stauskas was terrific in Michigans win at Michigan State last month, but he had not scored more than 16 points in a game since then. Perhaps he was letting opposing teams take him out of the offence too easily, but at 6-foot-6, if Stauskas makes up his mind that hhes going to shoot, he usually can.dddddddddddd. With the Wolverines down 48-43, Stauskas scored seven straight points to give Michigan the lead. When the Spartans edged back ahead by one, Stauskas answered with a 3-pointer, and it soon become clear that there wasnt much Michigan State could do to keep him from shooting over defenders on the perimeter. A 3-pointer by Stauskas from the right wing put Michigan ahead 59-52, then LeVert added a 3-pointer and a dunk. With the Spartans wearing down, Jon Horford dunked for Michigan to make it 68-56 — and that ended a stretch of 23 straight Michigan points by Stauskas or LeVert. Michigan fans serenaded the Spartans with a chant of “little brother” toward the end. The Spartans have battled injuries throughout this season — Adreian Payne and Brandon Dawson missed the first meeting with Michigan. Dawson was still out Sunday with his broken hand, but Payne is back, and he had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Keith Appling, who has been dealing with a wrist problem, scored only six points for Michigan State. “Yeah, I fell on the wrist again, but I couldnt come out of the game,” Appling said. “Its very frustrating right now, because there are things I just cant do, but I cant let that be an excuse. Im the quarterback of this team, like coach always says, and I have to be out there leading.” Michigan, of course, has been playing without big man Mitch McGary for over two months, but the Wolverines have overcome his back-related absence thus far. Glenn Robinson III scored 15 points Sunday, including an alley-oop dunk from a driving Stauskas that made it 72-61. Michigan State made 17 shots from 3-point range in its previous game against Purdue, and the Spartans were locked in early in this one. Payne dunked on freshman Zak Irvin while drawing a foul, and the three-point play gave Michigan State a 22-11 lead. The Wolverines responded with a 10-0 run that included 3-pointers by Spike Albrecht and LeVert and a breakaway dunk by Irvin. LeVert scored 14 points in the first half, and his 3-pointer in the final seconds cut Michigan States lead to two. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Russell Henley made good on his second chance at the 18th hole Sunday and won the Honda Classic after a wild day that began with Tiger Woods walking off the course with a back injury and ended with a four-man playoff. The closing hour at PGA National was a series of blunders by the contenders — and even the winner. Henley was in a three-way tie for the lead, 40 yards left of the flag on the par-5 18th in regulation, when he chunked a chip so badly that it only got halfway to the hole. He had to two-putt for par, and then watched as Rory McIlroy nearly made a great escape from an otherwise bad afternoon. McIlroy, who lost a two-shot lead, hit a 5-wood from 236 yards to just inside 12 feet for an eagle and the win. It narrowly slid by on the right. In the playoff, Henley was the only player to reach the 549-yard hole in two, and he two-putted from about 40 feet for birdie. Ryan Palmer missed a 10-foot birdie putt. McIlroy went from the back bunker to the front collar and had to scramble for par, and Russell Knox laid up and missed a 20-foot birdie attempt. “This isnt going to sink in for a while,” Henley said. Thousands of fans who spent hours in the warmth and wind of south Florida surely felt the same way. David Hearn (67) of Brantford, Ont., finished 6-under par to tie with American Will MacKenzie for sixth. Woods abruptly quit after 13 holes and was driven straight to his car. He later said he had lower back pain and spasms, and was unsure if he could play at Doral next week. And then came all the mistakes by four guys trying to win. Palmer missed a 5-foot par in regulation that would have won it. He closed with a 69, the only player in the last six groups to break par. Knox needed a birdie on the last hole, but he went from the fairway bunker to the rough, well over the green and then calmly made a par putt just inside 10 feet for a 71 to get in the playoff. They all finished at 8-under 272. Canadas David Hearn fired a final round 67 to finish two shots off the pace. The conditions were tough. The play was so underwhelming that McIlroy said that if he had won, “It would have felt undeserved in a way.” He wont know that feeling. Instead, the 24-year-old from Northern Ireland closed with a 74. It was his second straight tournament in stroke play that he played in the final group and shot 74. He tied for ninth in the Dubai Desert Classic. His undoing came on the 16th, when McIlroy missed on a 6-iron from the bunker and went into the water, making double bogey. He fell out of the lead for the first time with a bogey from the bunker on the 17th. What should ease the pain was his finish — a 5-wood he couldnt afford to miss that dropped from the sky to 12 feet left of the hole. “I was fortunate I was in the playoff,” McIlroy said. “Seventy-four wasnt good enough to get the job done. To go out with a two-shot lead, you have to play well enough to win the thing. If I had won today, I would have counted myself as lucky. Ill pick myself up, get back it, try to get back at it at Doral and try to get the job done.” Henley, who closed with a 72, won for the second time and qualified for the Masters. He also moves into the top 50 in the world ranking, making him eligible for the Cadillac Championship next week at Doral. It was the first playoff at PGA National since 2007, which also featured four players. McIlroy was at 13 under after a birdie on the fifth hole and appeared to be on his way, even after twice making bogey from the bunker to close out the front nine. PGA National was tougher than ever after a weekend of sunshine, and the stiff breeze in south Florida. The average score was 71.8, two shots harder than the third round. The contenders made it look like a beast. Henley tied for the lead by chipping in for birdie on the 14th, only to deposit his tee shot on the par-3 15th into the water for double bogey. Palmer missed a 6-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole, which wasnt nearly as damaging as the par putts he missed from 8 feet on the 16th and 5 feet on the 18th. Knox fell out of a brief share of the lead when he tried to play from the right rough on the 14th and had his shot carom into the water for a double bogey. At least they were still around. Woods was just a guy in a red shirt at PGA National when he shook hands with Luke Guthrie, his playing partner, and told him he was done. “Too early to tell,” Woods said in a statement about playing next week at Doral. “Ill get treatment every day to try to calm it down. Just dont know yet. Wait until Thursday and see how it feels.” It was the second straight year that the worlds No. 1 player walked out on the Honda Classic. A year ago, McIlroy was so frustrated with his game that he quit after 26 holes. At least this time, McIlroy stayed until the wild end. It just wasnt the finish he wanted. For Bergevin, the best pick is the 30th — which traditionally goes to the Stanley Cup winner. “Thats our goal. Every team wants to win,” he said Thursday on the eve of the draft. “Picking 26th, yeah its far back but again you want to make the playoffs and you want to have success. And thats what happened. Thats the price you pay.” After falling short in the Eastern Conference final, the Habs find themselves with a first and third-round pick and then five selections well down the draft ladder (117th, 125th, 147th, 177th and 207th overall). Their second-rounder went to the Islanders in the Thomas Vanek deal. Bergevin says he is open to moving higher or lower with his first pick, depending on the offers or scenarios. “We could use help everywhere,” he said candidly. “Were a good team but we need to get better. Im always open to make our team better.” The Canadiens have already made some decisions. Bergevin says free agents Vanek, defenceman Douglas Murray and tough guy George Parros wont be back. Defenceman Andrei Maarkov and coach Michel Therrien have signed new deals.dddddddddddd Talks continue with three other free agents: captain Brian Gionta, and defencemen Mike Weaver and Francis Bouillon The Montreal GM also says there has been a meeting with star defenceman P.K. Subbans agent about a new contract. While much has been made of the Habs lack of size, Bergevin says its only one variable. “Size is something every team looks at,” he said. “But character for me and compete (level) always comes into play. You can have a big guy who doesnt compete or you have (five-foot-nine) Brendan Gallagher — Ill take Brendan Gallagher all day long.” Trevor Timmins, the Habs director of amateur scouting, said his staff will be keeping its fingers crossed as the first round unfolds. “We think positive about the player we want to get,” he said. The good news is he believes there is a lot of parity in players available between the 15th and 40th picks. However he said it is a down year for francophone talent compared to 2013. The Habs scouts have done their homework, with Timmins and his staff having met with some 100 prospects. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

RENTON, Wash. — Anthony McCoy did not like having to be a spectator while his Seattle Seahawks teammates won their first Super Bowl. So the reserve tight end jumped at the chance to stay with the only organization hes ever played for knowing theres a chance of more titles in the future. “Everyone always has an interest in going into free agency and seeing what theyre worth on the market,” McCoy said Tuesday. “Seattle came at me tough. They were the team that drafted me and at the end of the day I felt this was the best place for me to continue my career in the NFL. I feel I made the right choice.” McCoy signed a one-year deal with the Seahawks on Tuesday after missing the entire 2013 season with a torn Achilles tendon. The deal was announced prior to the start of free agency, where McCoy would have been an unrestricted free agent. McCoy was expected to be a significant part of the Seahawks offence last season as a reserve tight end before suffering his season-ending injury during off-season workouts in May. He was stuck watching and going through the rehab process as the Seahawks won a title. “At first it was tough. You want to be out there, you see all the plays you can make or all the things you can do to contribute to the teams success,” McCoy said. “But not being out there, it weighed a lot on me at first. As time went by you kind of let it pass and focus on the stuff you can control and what I could control at that time was my rehabilitation process and my focus was on that. It was really good to see the team be successful this year. I was happy for them and I was happy to be a part of that, part of the Seahawks organization to watch them go all the way and win the Super Bowl.” “It was fun and it was kind of sad for me at the same time.” McCoy had 18 receptions and three touchdowns during the 2012 season in a backup role. He said his rehabilitation is far enough along that he should be ready to participate in the Seahawks off-season program that begins in late April. How the tight end position breaks down remains to be seen. Veteran Zach Miller is under contract but has a large salary cap number for 2014. Backup Luke Willson played well in his rookie season with 20 receptions and one touchdown. “I feel I can compete with all of the guys here,” McCoy said. “Its going to be a great competition and I think were going to do really well this year with the guys we have coming back.” cheap jerseys from china . WASHINGTON - Right-handed starter Jordan Zimmermanns $24 million, two-year contract and shortstop Ian Desmonds $17.5 million, two-year deal were among a half-dozen agreements reached by the Washington Nationals on Friday to avoid arbitration. Zimmermann and Desmond are two homegrown cornerstones of the Nationals, who essentially bought out both players last two arbitration years. And both deals are worth much more in the second season: Zimmermann will make $7.5 million in 2014, then $16.5 million in 2015; Desmond gets $6.5 million in 2014, then $11 million in 2015. Other players agreeing to contracts with the Nationals, all for just 2014, included former closer Drew Storen, catcher Wilson Ramos and lefties Jerry Blevins and Ross Detwiler. Storen got a base salary of $3.45 million, with a chance to earn $1 million in performance bonuses based on the number of games he finishes. Ramos deal is worth $2.095 million, Blevins is worth $1.675 million, and Detwilers is worth $3 million. Two other Nationals players submitted salary arbitration figures: right-handed starter Doug Fister, who was acquired from the Detroit Tigers in a trade this off-season, and right-handed reliever Tyler Clippard. Fister, who made $4,075,000 while going 14-9 with a 3.67 ERA over 208 2-3 innings last season, asked that his salary more than double to $8.5 million, while the Nationals offered $5.75 million. Clippard asked for a raise to $6.35 million from $4 million; the team offered $4.45 million. Clippard was 6-3 with a 2.41 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 71 innings in 2013. Zimmermann went 19-9 with a 3.25 ERA over 213 1-3 innings last season for the Nationals, who went 86-76 and finished second in the NL East, failing to reach the playoffs. Desmond hit .280 with 20 homers and 80 RBIs in 2013, along with a career-best .971 fielding percentage. He was an NL All-Star in 2012, when he hit 25 homers and helped Washington win its division. Ramos hit .272 with 16 homers in only 287 at-bats, missing time because of leg injuries. Storen was 4-2 with three saves and a 4.52 ERA in 61 2-3 innings in 2013, when he also was sent to Triple-A Syracuse in July for a brief stint in the minors. He had 43 saves in 2011, missed the first part of 2012 because of right elbow surgery, then switched to a setup role last season after Washington signed Rafael Soriano. Detwiler was 2-7 with a 4.04 ERA in 2013, splitting time between the rotation and bullpen. Washington got Blevins from the Oakland Athletics in a trade last month. He was 5-0 with a 3.15 ERA in a career-high 67 games in 2013. . “Our level of work has to go up,” said Carlyle on Thursday. Theyve made their moves. Theyre just waiting for him to make his. The Cavs created enough salary-cap space to offer the superstar free agent a maximum contract on Wednesday agreeing to trade guard Jarrett Jack, swingman Sergey Karasev and centre Tyler Zeller in a three-team deal with Brooklyn and Boston, a person familiar with the deals told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because teams are not permitted to discuss trades until the leagues moratorium ends Thursday. The manoeuvring is designed to open room under the salary cap so they can re-sign the Akron-born James, the four-time league MVP and most sought-after player on the market. With open roster spots, Cleveland isnt done. Not long after making the trade with the Celtics and Nets, the Cavs had exploratory discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves about a possible trade for three-time All-Star Kevin Love — if James does return to Cleveland, said a person with knowledge of the inquiry. The Timberwolves would be looking for No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Wiggins to be part of any potential package from Cleveland in order to consider parting with Love if the talks were to become more serious, the person said, speaking with the AP on condition of anonymity because neither team publicly announced the conversation. Whatever the Cavs next move is — with or without James - they could package together their other assets, including future first-round picks, to make a run at other All-Star players. Meanwhile, James had his meeting in Las Vegas with Miami president Pat Riley. James, his agent Rich Paul, Riley and Heat executive Andy Elisburg were at the meeting, a person with direct knowledge of the discussions told The AP. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because neither side publicly announced who would be attending the meeting or when it would take place. James has not made a decision and will not make any announcements before Thursday, the person said. With nothing finalized, LeBronathon 2014 will last at least one more day with the NBA -- and fans in Miami and Cleveland — on edge.dddddddddddd And as he takes fans on another summer thrill ride, James has one more offer to consider in deciding where to play next season: Ohios Cedar Point amusement park is promising to rename one of its roller coasters “King James” if he returns home to play for the Cavs. A park spokesman says its a legitimate offer that originated with the CEO. Cedar Point sent out a tweet with the proposal on Wednesday, telling James, who has visited the park in Sandusky, Ohio, many times, the ball was “in his court.” In the three-team trade the Cavs pulled off earlier Wednesday, Cleveland will receive guard Marcus Thornton from the Nets and send him, Zeller and a future first-round pick to the Celtics. Also, the Cavs are trading Jack and Karasev to the Nets. Jack, who signed with Cleveland as a free agent last season, was scheduled to make $6.3 million, Zeller will make $1.6 million and Karasev $1.4 million. In trading those salaries, the Cavs have enough to give James a maximum, $20.7 million contract — if he decides to sign with Cleveland. James played his first seven seasons with the Cavs before leaving as a free agent in 2010, and its apparent the team is doing everything it can to bring him back. Under NBA rules, teams must abide by a salary cap set by the league. If the combined salaries of the teams roster surpasses the cap, teams are forced to a pay additional taxes. Last season, the salary cap was approximately $59 million, and the league announced Wednesday that it will increase 7.5 per cent to an all-time high of $63.065 million for the 2014-15 season. The tax level — the point at which a team is penalized for exceeding the salary cap — for next season has increased by 7.1 per cent to $76.829 million. ESPN first reported details of the three-team trade. Jacks first season with Cleveland didnt go as he or the Cavs had hoped. He signed a four-year, $25 million deal last July after playing in Golden State. The Cavs counted on him being a leader for their young team, but it didnt work out as Cleveland finished 33-49, missed the playoffs and fired coach Mike Brown. SARASOTA, Fla. — When it comes to his 50-game drug suspension, Nelson Cruz didnt have much to say during his introduction by the Baltimore Orioles. Cruz gave short answers to any Biogenesis-related questions during a news conference Tuesday, a day after the 33-year-out outfielder finalized an $8 million, one-year contract. “Whatever happened in the past, I look to move forward and have a great year with the Baltimore Orioles,” Cruz said. Cruz was suspended for 50 games last August for a violation of Major League Baseballs drug agreement related to the sports investigation of the Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic. He was joined at the news conference by eight of his new teammates, including Chris Davis, J.J. Hardy, Adam Jones, Manny Machado, Nick Markakis and Matt Wieters. Markakis said last summer that MLB needed stiffer penalties for violations of the drug rules. On Saturday, Markakis said he still favoured tougher penalties but was happy to have Cruz on the Orioles. “My opinion doesnt change toward anything. Hes part of this team now and hes going to be in this clubhouse and were going to welcome him just like anybody else. Hes going to be part of this team,” Markakis said. Cruz hit .266 last year with 27 homers and 76 RBIs in 109 games. The suspension cost him $2,732,240 of his $10 million salary. He signed with Baltimore more than three months after he turned a down a $14.1 million qualifying offer from the Rangers. “It was a frustrating process, but Im happy for the decision that I made. Im really excited for the opportunity. I like challenges and I think its going to be a great challenge for me. Hopefully, I do my best and I look for the World Series,” Cruz said. Cruz waited until training camps had opened. Hes part of a late spending burst that has seen the orioles commit $63,575,000. Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez agreed to a $50 million, four-year contract and South Korean right-hander Suk-min Yoon received a three-year deal for $5,575,000. Baltimore lost its first-round draft pick, No. 17 overall, for signing Jimenez, and its second-round selection, No. 55, for signing Cruz. Orioles executive vice-president of baseball operations Dan Duquette adopted a strategy of waiting for free agent prices to drop. “Weve been steadily putting our team together,” he said. “We signed a couple of pitchers, which we said we were going to do, and we said we were looking for a bat in the middle of our lineup, and Nelson can fill that role. Were always looking, but I dont anticipate any players of this calibre soon, but were always looking around.” . — Packers cornerback Tramon Williams has been fined $26,250 for contact with an official, per NFL guidelines. Midweek Premier League action in the books: so many talking points to get to. Bring on the Musings. – Harsh. Manchester City was fortunate in a 5-1 win over Spurs at White Hart Lane. Sounds weird, doesnt it? The score-line was inflated by the sending off of Danny Rose. Down 1-0, the Spurs left back was sent off early in the second half, deemed to have fouled Edin Dzeko on a clear-cut goal scoring opportunity. Red. Penalty. Converted. Game over. Rose actually got the ball on his challenge and very little of Dzeko. Not a foul or a sending off. Referee Andre Marriner didnt point to the spot; his linesman made the call. Although the call was wrong, whenever a player lets an attacking player get goal-side inside the eighteen, its grounds for disaster. Diving challenges from behind as such will almost always be called. Harsh on Rose. Its ridiculous the rule sends the player off in that circumstance. Isnt the penalty enough of a punishment? Disappointing, as Spurs did well getting back into the match with physical, determined play. – Stat of the Day, Part 1 courtesy Rob Harris (Associated Press): Citys financial loss announced Wednesday was £51.60m. They beat Spurs 5-1, 6-0 this season. Creepy. – City has 68 goals on the season through 23 matches. They scored 66 all last season. They have 15 games to go. Simply incredible. – No player is as dominant in attacking areas, with the ball on his right foot, than Sergio Aguero. The finish on his opener was exquisite, putting it past Hugo Lloris on the angle, as delicate as can be. He hit one off the post from a ridiculous angle earlier on his right foot with power and precision. Defenders need to cheat Aguero; playing him to his left and hope for the best. Aguero limped off at the start of the second half with a hamstring injury, he had just returned from a calf issue. The extent of the injury will be determined Thursday, anxious times. The team is a powerhouse, but Aguero is a difference maker. Without the Argentine for a prolonged stretch, a true assault on trophies in all four competitions is a reach. – City is now top the table, but will face a motivated Chelsea Monday who dropped points in a 0-0 home draw against lowly West Ham. Chelsea dominated but simply couldnt score, incredibly outshooting the Hammers 39-1. Manager Jose Mourinho took out his frustration post-match, hitting out at West Hams style. “This is not Premier League; this is not the best league in the world. This is football from the 19th century.” The statement by Mourinho is entirely hypocritical and embarrassing from a manager renowned for playing dull, defensive football away from home. Yes, extraordinary defensive commitment in blocking shots and standout goalkeeping from Adrian stole a point, but Mourinho parked the bus at Old Trafford and the Emirates this year. He has done so countless times while at Inter and Real Madrid. Mourinho came off as a bitter, desperate man Wednesday. Poor form. – Juan Matas Manchester United debut was unsurprisingly impressive, especially considering he hadnt played since January 1st and trained sparsely since his transfer became inevitable. Mata lined up behind Robin van Persie in the 2-0 win over Cardiff, pressing high when need be but finding comfort in dropping deep to play a ball possession, play-making role. His passing was reminiscent of Paul Scholes, particularly starting the movement on the first goal. His confidence and composure on fills a need. The signing of the 25-year-old is an absolute coup for United. Manuel Pellegrini and Arsene Wenger hitting out at Chelseas decision to transfer Mata within the Premier League speaks to the threat United will always be, the rest of this year and beyond. – Reports say United manager David Moyes is intent of adding five more Matas to his current group. Its a scary proposition, and a premature one. United paid a club record £37m for Mata. The club has now only spent over £20m on a player five times in the last decade. Manchester City spent over £20m each on four players last summer, and 15 players overall in that span. Chelsea has purchased 12 players over that number. Is United finally willing to go where other big clubs have been for years? – £300,000 per week is a steep, but necessary price to pay Wayne Rooney to keep him at Old Trafford. The terms of a new contract are reported, but not official. The 28-year-old has been sensational this campaign, putting the clouds of uncertainty and distraction of last summer behind him. The captains armband seems right with no other suitable heir apparent and Rooney on course to become Uniteds all-time scoring leader. A focus Rooney leads by example on the field. – Adam Lallana for England? Ill unveil my prospective England World Cup team in the coming weeks. But Southamptons Lallana makes the side. His sixth goal coming in a 2-2 draw with Arsenal is testament to the quality and work-rate of the midfielder. How about Luke Shaw for England as well? Should it matter if hes just 18? Ashley Coles form has been poor. And Shaw is that good. Already. – Time for Wenger to get Kieran Gibbs back in the starting XI. Gibbs strong season was derailed through injury over the holidays. The drop-off between Gibbs and Nacho Monreal is significant. Although its been admirable of Wenger to reward Monreal for his work, Gibbs has to start. The back four is a strength with Bacary Sagna, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker. – Daniel Sturridge 3-0 goal for Liverpool in the Merseyside derby was the goal of the week. With a searching long-ball looped over his head, Sturridge looks over both shoulders on the run before volleying over the oncoming Tim Howard. Sensational balance, focus and a sweet finish that shouldnt be overlooked by an ugly penalty miss. No Englishman not named Lampard, Gerrard or Baines can be trusted from the spot. Sturridge was also called greedy as he searched for the hat trick. The criticism is unfair. Hes paid to score goals and up 4-0 is as good a time as any. Leave him be. – Stat of the Day, Part 2 courtesy ESPN FC: three top goal scorers in the BPL – Suarez, Aguero, and Sturridge – have missed 19 games combined. Theyve scored 51 goals. Wow. – Everton manager Roberto Martinez has revealed star striker Romelu Lukakus ankle injury isnt as bad as originally feared. It looked ugly when teammate Gareth Barry toppled over him. Lukaku is expected to miss weeks, not months. Spurs are their toughest opponent in the next three, and Lukaku cannot play February 22nd against Chelsea anyway. So perhaps, in a weird way, Everton catch a break. – Ive been calling a Sunderland revival for weeks. The team is not only in the Capital One Cup Final but also out of the bottom three. There is talent in the side, especially in the back and in the midfield. Heaps of credit to manager Gus Poyet for making sense of a mish-mashed squad. While I predicted Sunderlands ascension, I did not foresee Crystal Palace climbing out of the relegation zone. The fight and work rate in Palace has been phenomenal all season. Questions remain whether they can find enough goals in the final months. – Aston Villa can all of a sudden score goals. Eight goals in the last four games and Villa have picked up seven points in the process. In the previous five, they scored two and only picked up a point. – Yohan Cabaye to PSG is a loss for Newcastle. But with or without the Frenchman, they are still a mid-table club. Expect a step back in the coming weeks with talisman 11-goal man Loic Remy suspended for the next three after his sending off at Norwich City. The next three games against Sunderland, at Chelsea, and Spurs is a massive challenge and test of character. – Cardiff City is last in the table on 18 points, but is hardly the weakest side. Three of their last four have come against Arsenal and the two Manchester sides. Baptism by fire for new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who took over during this nightmare run of fixtures. The additions of Wilfried Zaha on-loan and Fabio from Manchester United, as well as Kenwyne Jones from Stoke should help. There is enough in this team to climb out of the bottom. – Transfer window closes Friday. Enjoy the madness. Second-seeded Ivanovic looked headed for a routine victory in the matchup between former world No. 1s, winning the first set in 35 minutes and holding match point at 5-3 in the second. But Williams fought back to break Ivanovic twice to capture the second set and force a decider. Williams opened the third set with two double faults to drop serve, however, and played under pressure the remainder of the match. She held two break points in the final game before Ivanovic won four straight points to close out the match. Williams was playing in her first final since winning her 44th career title at Luxembourg in October 2012. The seven-time Grand Slam champions ranking has fallen to 47th as she has battled injuries and Sjogrens syndrome, a fatigue-causing autoimmune disease, over the past two years. Williams had an 8-1 record against Ivanovic heading into the match, with the Serbs only win coming at the 2008 Australian Open.dddddddddddd “She played so well. Weve played a lot of great matches and this is another one,” Williams said. “I just kept fighting despite the odds. She was playing so well.” Ivanovic, a former French Open champion, captured her 12th WTA singles title and her first since Bali in 2011. “It was very tough,” Ivanovic said. "Venus showed again what a great sport she is in what shes done today and over all these years. Williams sister Serena is playing later in the day against Victoria Azarenka in the final of the Brisbane International, another Australian Open tuneup event. Venus said the sisters made a pact before the finals that they would both bring home the trophies Saturday. “Ill just be rooting for Serena tonight,” she said. “I couldnt keep up my end of the bargain. I just played too tough of a player but hopefully she can make it at least one win today.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

The 2014 NBA Draft will be a historic one for Canadian basketball, with as many as seven players from Canada – three of them as high as the first round – possibly selected. In the days leading up to the draft, TSN.ca and TSN Radio basketball analyst Duane Watson looks at some of the names that will be headlining the event. Watch the 2014 NBA Draft on TSN, Thursday at 7pm et/4pm pt. Name: Dwight PowellFrom: Toronto, OntarioPlayed: Stanford UniversityHeight: 611Weight: 235 Position: Power Forward2013-2014 Stats: 14 points per game, 6.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists Breakout Game: 22 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists in win vs. California Feb 5th.Accolades: 2013-14 All Pac-12 First Team, Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.Draft Projection: Mid-late second round. Dwight Powell isnt supposed to be here. Stanford yielded a handful of NBA pros and hadnt been to the NCAA Tournament since 2008 – not the standard route to becoming an NBA Draft prospect. Last year, after a standout junior season, he earned himself a spot on the All Pac-10 First Team. Powell averaged 14.9 points and 8.4 rebounds making an NBA career a legitimate possibility. Usually a promise from a team committing to select them makes a player leave college early. In this case, Powell made a promise to his mother, who was ailing from cancer to finish school, get his degree and compete in the NCAA tournament for the first time. Jacqueline Weir passed in 2012 and while its no secret Powell led the Cardinals to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA tournament in March, what got him there and what tools will he need to excel at the next level? Powell is a forward who can face up on the floor whether to make a move to create his own shot or facilitate for others, as hes a more than capable passer for his size/position. While he will need to bulk up for the NBA game, his length (7 wingspan) and mobility are assets. Powell posses a strong basketball IQ, and while his motor isnt in question, an on court intensity would be welcomed. He will need to develop more consistency in a number of areas, particularly with his jump shot and adding range. With more potential than project, Powell has a skill set to contribute to an NBA team and enough talent and physical gifts to build upon. While many were expecting significant jumps from his on court performance from his junior to senior years, the growth in character and leadership cannot be overlooked either. Powell competed for the national program as a key member of Canadas Mens Developmental basketball team that traveled overseas tallying a 15-2 record last summer. Powell kept his word to his mother, now he just has to show enough promise to warrant an NBA team realizing he has enough of it, to select him. .C. — Gary Players upcoming ceremonial drive is the latest Masters honour in a career filled with them.SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Al Horford was stellar on the offensive end Tuesday night. His defence on DeMarcus Cousins made the difference, though. Horford had 27 points and 10 rebounds, Paul Millsap had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and the Hawks held off the Sacramento Kings for a 105-100 victory. Horford was largely responsible for Cousins mediocre game. The Kings centre was limited to 11 points and six rebounds. Cousins made his first three shots in the games opening minutes, but didnt score again until getting a three-point play at the 11:21 mark of the fourth quarter. He was then called for three quick fouls early in the fourth, and he went to the bench for good at the midway point of the period. “My teammates did a great job of disrupting him and were digging real well and keeping him off balance,” Horford said. “Any given night he can be the best big man in the league. Mentally, I feel hes stronger this season.” When asked about Horford, Cousins only reply was, “Next question.” Horford received plenty of help from Millsap, a key off-season addition for the Hawks. The two combine to give the Hawks a strong inside presence. That was evident in the fourth quarter when Horford scored 10 points and Millsap had eight, combining for 18 of Atlantas 23 points. “Paul has a knack for scoring late (in the game),” Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said. “I think both Paul and Al stepped up for us. They are working well off each other.” The Hawks (2-2) led by 17 points going into the fourth quarter, but the Kings cut it to three with 32 seconds left. Isaiah Thomas had a chance to tie it with 3 second left but missed a 3-pointer and the Hawks beat the Kings for the 11th straight time, including six straight in Sacramento. Atlanta shared the ball effectively throughout and were getting open looks for much of the game until the final six minutes. The Hawks shot 48 per cent, made eight 3-pointers, and had only six turnovers going into the fourth quarter when they committed eight more in helping to fuel the Kings comeback. “The defence isnt where it should be obviously right now, and we continue to dig ourselves in big holes,” Kings coach Mike Malone said. “Every time you do that you have to fight out of it and that takes a lot when youre 19 points down.” Jeff Teague, who left the game in the first quarter with an ankle problem, returned in the second and played well, finishing with 18 points and 10 assists for Atlanta. Both Kyle Korver and Cartier Martin had nine apiece. Thomas had 18 of his 26 points in the fourth quarteer for the Kings (1-3), who have dropped three straight.dddddddddddd Marcus Thornton and Ben McLemore had 15 points and John Salmons added 13. Thomas has made a habit of coming off the bench this season and providing the energy that has the Kings in up-tempo mode on offence and hustling defensively. However, there was no helping the Kings in the second and third quarters when they were outscored 57-33. “We just cant keep doing this to ourselves like we are some great team,” Thomas said. “It takes a toll on your whole team. We keep coming back, but its not going to happen every night.” Using a suddenly energized defence in the fourth, the Kings scored 11 straight points, cutting the Hawks lead to 96-95 at the 2:45 mark on a fast-break layup by Thomas. When the lead had been reduced to three points at the 3:04 mark, Millsap brought the Hawks together for a little inspirational talk. “It was one of those moments when everything was unraveling,” said Millsap, who played the previous seven seasons with Utah. “I told everyone, Lets finish this game. Thats my personality, to lead.” Millsap was inspirational with his play as well. With the clock running down and Atlantas lead reduced to one point, he made an 8-footer and added a free throw for a 99-95 lead. After dominating the second quarter, the Hawks controlled the third. Getting numerous open looks against the Kings lacklustredefence, Atlanta went on a 19-6 run for a 75-56 lead at the 4:47 mark. Korver connected on his first 3-point attempt early in third quarter, extending his streak to 77 straight games, the fourth longest in NBA history and one less than third place Dennis Scott. Dana Barros holds the NBA record with 89. Teague scored 14 points and Millsap had 13 in the opening half. The Hawks trailed the entire half until the midway point of the second quarter. They ended up outscoring the Kings 29-13 in the second to take a 54-45 lead into halftime. McLemore had 12 first-half points for the Kings, who had 12 turnovers. The Kings are in the midst of a seven-game stretch in which they play six home games. Their only away game is Friday at Portland. The two teams play again Saturday night in Sacramento. NOTES: Boxing champion Floyd Mayweather was sitting in a courtside seat. … Kings rookie point guard Ray McCallum dressed for the first time this season, replacing centre Hamady Ndiaye on the active roster. … Salmons had seven points in the first quarter and the Kings shot 12 of 22 in leading 32-25. … Atlanta concludes a three-game road trip Thursday night in Denver. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Marcus Paige and his North Carolina teammates have endured so many wild swings — big wins, surprising losses, NCAA drama — that no one can blame their Hall of Fame coach for wondering whats next. And yet, a month after sitting at 0-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Tar Heels are surging after a rousing comeback against their fiercest rival that had their fans rushing to midcourt to celebrate when it was over. Paige scored all 13 of his points in the second half, including two big baskets in the final 2 1/2 minutes, to help UNC beat No. 5 Duke 74-66 on Thursday night for their eighth straight win. Senior Leslie McDonald added a season-high 21 points for the Tar Heels (19-7, 9-4 ACC), who rallied from 11 points down in the second half to beat the Blue Devils (21-6, 10-4) in a rivalry game postponed more than a week by a winter storm. It was by far North Carolinas most impressive win during its run. Before Thursday, most had come against teams standing sixth or lower in the ACC standings. “Im not going to say were a finished product because weve got games left,” Paige said, “but man, were playing really well right now and were winning games in a lot of different ways.” It marked UNCs third win against a top-five team this season, along then-No. 1 Michigan State and then-No. 3 Louisville. Throw in then-No. 11 Kentucky in December, and the Tar Heels have beaten the top four teams from The Associated Press preseason Top 25. Not bad for a team that never had top player P.J. Hairston due to NCAA violations for improper benefits. “It was a bunch of guys that fought really hard,” coach Roy Williams said, “and I couldnt be prouder of my team than I am right now.” After filling the entire court after the horn, thousands of fans mobbed Franklin Street on the north end of campus to continue a celebration that came eight days later than they had hoped due to last weeks winter storm. The storm brought enough snow and ice to paralyze area roads and kept Dukes bus from even making it to Durham to pick up the team for the 11-mile drive to the Smith Center in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels made it worth the wait for their fans by being tough enough to wrestle control from the Blue Devils. They shot 50 per cent from the field after halftime and even made their last 10 free throws after a disastrous start at the line. Jabari Parker and Quinn Cook both scored 17 points for Duke, which led 51-40 with about 15 minutes left before going ice cold from the field. The Blue Devils missed 13 straight shots and went scoreless for 6 minutes at one point, helping the Tar Heels climb back in it by mixing a 1-3-1 zone with man defence. “They would just keep switching,” Cook said. “Wed come down, and we wouldnt know what theyd be in. They kept us on our toes with their defence.” Duke shot 36 per cent (11 for 31) after halftime and made 5 of 22 3-pointers for the game, Coach Mike Krzyzewski said he thought his team “played young” in the second half. “We looked tired or we didnt have life,” Krzyzewski said. “And no matter what we did in a timeout, we just didnt have that spark — the anger, the emotion, the thing you have to have to match what their crowd, their team is doing. You have to try to counter that. And I just felt we were, we didnt have the life that you needed to have.” Paige provided plenty of that fight for the Tar Heels. After being hounded by Duke defenders Cook and Rasheed Sulaimon through his scoreless first half, he scored nine points in the final 5 1/2 minutes starting with his only 3-pointer of the night. McDonald hit the go-ahead jumper to make it 62-60 with 3:54 left, capping his own strong performance after two straight 1-for-8 shooting performances. Paige followed with a stepback jumper over Rodney Hood with 2:11 left, then answered Parkers free throws by driving for a scooping layup through the heart of Dukes defence. After Sulaimon missed a 3 on the ensuing possession, freshman Nate Britt followed with two free throws that pushed the lead to 68-62 with 46.2 seconds left and soon had the rowdy home crowd inching closer to the court. It marked the 11th time Paige has scored in double figures in the second half this season after scoring four or fewer in the first. The postponement created a four-games-in-eight-days stretch for both teams, though its particularly challenging for Duke with No. 1 Syracuse visiting Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday night in a rematch of the overtime classic won by the Orange earlier this month. UNC hosts Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon. [url=http://www.theseahawksofficialonline.com/Seahaw…. DALLAS — Monta Ellis scored 22 points and the Dallas Mavericks matched a season high with their fourth consecutive victory, 103-81 over the last-place Utah Jazz on Friday night. All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki had 20 points while playing only 26 1/2 minutes for the Mavericks, who moved a season-best nine games over. 500 at 30-21. It is only the second time they have been that far above the break-even mark since their 2010-11 NBA championship season. Even with Utah at full strength, putting its best lineup on the floor and Marvin Williams making four 3-pointers in the games first 6 minutes, the Jazz lost their fourth game in a row. Jazz starting centre Derrick Favors was back after missing three games with an inflamed right hip and reserve forward Jeremy Evans had missed two games with a bruised tailbone and bruised right elbow. Utah has lost all six games Favors didnt start this season. Dallas only other four-game winning streak this season came in November, one capped by a 103-93 home win over the Jazz. The Mavericks play their last three games before the All-Star break on the road, then host Miami on Feb. 18 before three more games away from home. Williams finished with 21 points while matching his career high with five 3-pointers. Trey Burke had 13 points and Richard Jefferson 10. Jose Calderon and Samuel Dalembert each had 12 points for the Mavs. Utah jumped out to a 21-14 lead in the first 6 minutes on the strength of Williams long-range shots. He already had 14 points by then. With Nowitzki getting a breather, the Mavericks then scored 11 in a row as part of a 14-2 quarter-ending run to take the lead for good. Ellis made it 21-all with a 20-foot jumper, and the tiebreaker came on Brandan Wrights dunk with 3 minutes left in the first quarter. After starting the game by making eight of 10 shots with five 3s, the Jazz missed seven shots in a row during that scoreless drought of more than 4 minutes. It was also during that stretch when Williams missed his first two shots — both on the same play, when he missed a layup and the follow-up tip try. John Lucas III made a 19-foot jumper and a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions to get the Jazz within 35-34 with 7 1/2 minutes left in the first half. They never got closer as Dallas went on a 17-3 run, including another spurt off 11 in a row during which Williams missed a slam dunk. They are 3-24 with seven other starting combinations. … The halftime entertainment was the Texas Southern University band, with full drum line and loud horns. … After Ellis and Burke traded 3-pointers midway through the third quarter, Ellis then made a 22-footer and fed Shawn Marion for a dunk that made it 69-57. … Wright had another dunk, a one-hander on an alley-oop pass from Vince Carter late in the third quarter. … The season series will end with two games in Utah, on March 12 and April 8. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Royals agreed to one-year contracts with pitchers Jonathan Sanchez, Luke Hochevar and Felipe Paulino along with reserve outfielder Mitch Maier on Tuesday, leaving outfielder Alex Gordon as the only remaining player in arbitration. The Royals are hopeful of signing Gordon to a long-term deal. Sanchez will get $5.6 million and is eligible for up to $200,000 in bonuses after arriving in an off-season trade that sent outfielder Melky Cabrera to San Francisco. Hochevar will make $3.51 million, Paulino is in line for $1.9 million and Maier will make $865,000, not counting performance bonuses. General manager Dayton Moore, who was travelling to Latin America on Tuesday, said last week he was hopeful that deals would get done with each of the players before arbitration. He also indicated that hed like to get a deal done with Gordon, who was drafted by the Royals and has expressed interest in signing a long-term deal before he reaches free agency. Gordon has asked for $5.45 million in arbitration, while Kansas City has countered at $4.15 million. “Every day youre working to try to improve. You dont want to get too crazy, force things,” Moore said. “I think Ive learned the last few years not to be too forceful, to force things that may not work. When you have the group we have right now, its easier to be patient.” Sanchez, Hochevar and Bruce Chen are expected to anchor the Royals starting rotation, while Paulino is a favourite to land one of the remaining jobs. The subject of trade speculation for years, Sanchez was the Giants best pitcher during the latter part of 2010, when they beat the Texas Rangers to win the World Series. He was 4-1 with a 1.03 ERA over his last seven outings, and finished the year with a 13-9 record and a 3.07 ERA. He struggled most of last season, though, partly due to biceps tendinitis, going 4-7 with a 4.26 ERA. He missed the final month with a left ankle sprain. Hochevar finally experienced a breakthrough in his fifth big league season. The former No. 1 overall draft pick went 11-11 with a 4.68 ERA, leading the Royals in innings (198), strikeouts (128) and giving an indication that he can match up with an opposing teams ace. Paulino was acquired from Colorado for cash in May. He wound up going 4-6 with a 4.11 ERA once he arrived in Kansas City. The 29-year-old Maier is the longest-tenured player on the Royals roster. He was drafted in the first round in 2003 but has struggled to crack the starting lineup. Still, he provides depth at both corner outfield spots after hitting .232 and driving in seven runs last season. Kansas City also signed second baseman Chris Getz and catcher Brayan Pena on Monday, avoiding arbitration. Both are expected to be backups. Hill had a two-run homer wiped out by a rain storm that postponed the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets in the fourth inning on Friday night after a delay of 2 hours, 11 minutes. “To get a win … yeah,” Hill said. “We need a few of those.” The game will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader on Sunday. The first game will start at 1:10 p.m. Manager Kirk Gibson said the Diamondbacks, who are in last place in the NL West at 18-31, will likely call up a pitcher for the makeup start Sunday. The Mets will go with Daisuke Matsuzaka in the second game of the traditional twinbill. Rafael Montero will make his regularly scheduled start in the opener against Bronson Arroyo. Matsuzaka has been pitching out of the bullpen this season but the converted starter doesnt see going deep into the game as a problem. “I pitched yesterday but just one inning, did not throw too many pitches,” Matsuzaka said through a translator. “I do not think 100 pitches should be a problem” The Diamondbacks are flying back to Arizona after the game Sunday. They host the San Diego Padres on Monday night but the doubleheader was the only option for the teams that do not meet again this season. They have no common days off the rest of the way. “Id rather stay,” and wait it out, Gibson said, “but I can see it was raining.” Last seasons series between the teams at Citi Field was also plagued by rain. “Good old New York,” Hill said. Hill gave Arizona the lead in the second inning with a homer off Bartolo Colon that just cleared the fence in left field. Rookie Chase Anderson allowed one hit and a walk in his third big league start for the Diamondbacks. Dark clouds rolled in during the bottom of the third inning and the public address announcer made a request for fans sitting in exposed areas to move to protected areas. After Colon pitched a perfect fourth, thhe grounds crew brought out the tarp and rain began to fall shortly after.dddddddddddd The Mets swept the Diamondbacks in a three-game series in Arizona April 14-16, but the teams are in very different places now. The Mets are 6-14 in May while the D-backs are 9-9 even though they were just dropped three straight at St. Louis. Hill connected on a two-seam fastball from Colon after Miguel Montero led off with a nubber up the third base line for a hit. Mets manager Terry Collins before the game talked about how Colon, who turns 41 Saturday, needs to use his off-speed pitches more to be effective. He started out Hill with a slider then threw him four straight two-seamers. Colon has had an up and down start to his first year in New York. He gave up two runs in eight innings in his previous start, a win over Washington, but yielded seven runs in 5 2-3 innings against the Yankees five days earlier. He entered 3-5 with a 5.34 ERA. Anderson gave up a two-out single to David Wright in the first and walked former Diamondbacks outfielder Chris Young leading off the second. Wilmer Flores grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning and Anderson was perfect in the third. “I felt like I was starting to roll after that third inning,” Anderson said. “If we went to the fourth, fifth, I felt pretty good.” NOTES: Mets C Travis dArnaud (concussion) took BP on the field. His next step before getting MLB doctors approval is catching a bullpen session. When he is finally cleared to play in games, Collins thinks dArnaud will need 8-10 rehab at-bats. … Diamondbacks RHP J.J. Putz (forearm strain) has been playing long toss and is nearing a bullpen session, Gibson says there is no timetable yet for his return. … Gibson was watching on a TV in his office his son Cam play in the Big Ten baseball tournament. Cam had four hits in a win over Illinois. … Up Next: Arizonas Josh Collmenter (2-2) is scheduled to face New Yorks Zack Wheeler (1-4) Saturday. TEMPE, Ariz. - Stanfords players stood on the makeshift stage in the end zone, waving red roses as coach David Shaw accepted the Pac-12 championship trophy. After all the Cardinal had been through this season, they earned a chance to repeat as Rose Bowl champions. This trip to Pasadena might be even sweeter than the first one. Tyler Gaffney ran for 133 yards and scored three touchdowns in a dominating first half, leading No. 7 Stanford back to the Rose Bowl with a 38-14 victory over No. 11 Arizona State in the Pac-12 title game Saturday night. “We talk about what it takes to get into Stanford … where everybody else says you dont have to do that,” Shaw said. “When things get tough or when people say they (the players) shouldnt do it or cant do it, they dont care. They put their heads down and keep working.” Stanford (11-2) raced out to a big lead Sept. 21 in its first game with Arizona State this season and had its way with the Sun Devils again early in the rematch, going up 28-7 early in the second quarter. Gaffney, as he has most of the season, did most of the damage, scoring on a 69-yard run on the Cardinals second play and a pair of 1-yard runs. The Cardinal consistently gouged Arizona States defence for big plays all night, racking up 517 yards, including 240 on the ground. Kevin Hogan kept the Sun Devils off-balance, throwing for 277 yards and a touchdown. Ty Montgomery added a dash of versatility, catching a touchdown pass and running for another score. Stanfords defence, its calling card under Shaw and Jim Harbaugh before him, was dominating again, preventing Taylor Kelly from making big plays while holding Arizona States offence to 311 total yards. After a seesaw ride into the Pac-12 title game that included a loss to unranked Utah, the Cardinal are headed back to Pasadena after a dominating performance. “We had some downs this year, but we love each other,” said Gaffney, who watched last years Rose Bowl from the sideline after returning from playing minor league baseball. “Being here makes it all worth it.” Arizona State (10-3) stumbled early for the second straight game against the Cardinal and again had trouble on special teams to spoil its Rose Bowl hopes. The Sun Devils were able to beat Arizona without leading rusher and scorer Marion Grice last week, but had trouble getting much going offensively without him against the Cardinal. D.J. Foster accounted for 142 total yards and two touchdowns before a knee injury sidelined him for most of the second half. Kelly threw for 173 yards and touchdown and was unable create plays with his legs against Stanfords containment. Instead of their first trip to Pasadena since 1997, the Sun Devils will likely play in the Holiday or Alamo Bowl. “They dominated the game and beat us every way you can tonight,” Arizona State coach Todd Graham said. “They obviously were the better team and deserved to win.” Stanford won the first meeting 42-28 by racing out to a big lead and holding a Sun Devils charge. A lot happened in the 11 weeks since: Arizona State won seven straight to clinch the Pac-12 South and Stanford won the North despite losing twice. The Cardinal got off to another fast start in the rematch: Gaffney raced 69 yards down the sideline for a touchdown that turned the raucous crowd inside Sun Devil Stadium nearly silent. The Sun Devils had a quick counterpunch this time, scoring on their fifth play when Foster charged through up the middle for a 51-yard touchdown, eclipsing Arizona States entire rushing total (50) from the first meeting. But Stanford followed with a series of body blows, churning out big plays behind its massive offensive line. Gaffney scored on a 1-yard run after Hogan hit Jordan Pratt on 35-yard pass. Montgomery scored on the first play of the second quarter, racing in 22 yards on an end-around after Hogan connected on a 42-yard pass to Devon Cajuste. A 29-yard run by Anthony Wilkerson set up Fosters third TD, a fourth-down dive that put the Cardinal up 28-7 early in the second quarter. “We said all week not to let them make big plays and we didnt do that,” Arizona State safety Alden Darby said. “We gave up three bombs to let them score and that set the tone.” Arizona State finally showed signs of life late in the quarter, when Foster broke a tackle and turned a swing pass into a 65-yard touchdown that cut the lead to 28-14. The Sun Devils had a couple of scoring chances in the third quarter and came up empty. Zane Gonzalez ended his school-record streak of made field goals 18 by missing a 31-yarder and Stanfords Zach Hoffpauir came off the corner to stuff DeMarieya Nelson on fourth-and-goal on Arizona States second attempt from the 1. Stanford put it out of reach thanks to another big play early in the fourth quarter. Hogan hit Cajuste on a 78-yard pass, then found Montgomery on a 24-yard touchdown throw to put the Cardinal up 38-14 and headed back to the Rose Bowl. Not to be outdone, Atletico Madrid bettered its title rivals by demolishing 10-man Getafe 7-0 with Diego Costa returning from injury to score with a brilliant bicycle kick. “It was an almost perfect night,” Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. And this recent run of success also has general manager Bryan Murray re-thinking his plans for the near future with the March 5 trade deadline not too far away.UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The New York Islanders have been on the losing end of many roller-coaster finishes this season. So Lubomir Visnovskys overtime goal lifting them to a wild 5-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs was especially satisfying. The veteran defencemans unassisted tally 1:55 into extra time ended a see-saw contest Thursday night in which the teams combined for five goals in an 8 1/2-minute span of the third period. The winner came after Anders Lee scored two tying goals for the Islanders in his first game of the season. Evgeni Nabokov made 18 saves for New York, which improved to 5-1-2 in their last eight games against Toronto. “Our singular focus is the task at hand, one period at a time and one game at a time,” said Islanders coach Jack Capuano, whose squad will be without top scorer and captain John Tavares for the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered at the Olympics. “That team is big and strong. I like the fact we kept moving forward tonight.” Joffrey Lupul put Toronto ahead 4-3 with just over six minutes left in the third before Lee knotted the score at 17:20 with his second of the game. Lupuls 18th of the season at 13:54 came just over a minute after Lee tied it at 3 with his first goal. Lees power-play goal came after Dion Phaneuf had put Toronto ahead 3-2 at 11:26. Phaneufs sixth goal of the season came less than three minutes after Paul Ranger tied it at 2. “You cant win in this league giving goals as gifts,” Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said. “They tried to grind and we tried to outskill them. They did a better job.” After Torontos Phil Kessel opened the scoring at 6:53 of the first with his 32nd goal of the season, New Yorks Michael Grabner scored two short-handed goals 48 seconds apart late in the period. The Islanders held that lead entering the third before the outburst by both teams. Kessel, who scored five goals for Team USA in Sochi, took a pass in the high slot before whipping the puck past Nabokov. Only Washingtons Alex Ovechkin has more goals than Kessel. Grabner answered for the Islanders with his first short-handed score at 15:53 off an assist from Casey Cizikas. The Austrian forward then took advantage of a misplay by Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier, intercepting an attempted pass by the netminder in the crease and sliding the puck into the empty net att 16:41.dddddddddddd The goal was the 11th of the season for Grabner, who tied Kessel in goals at the Olympics. “Its a game of mistakes, but at least we got a point out of it,” Bernier said. The last Islanders player to score two short-handed goals on the same power play was Ziggy Palffy, 53 seconds apart on April 17, 1999. “We kept coming and obviously had a big shift to score that tying goal,” Grabner said. “Everyone fed off each other tonight. We still have a lot of games left. Hopefully we can keep it up.” The Islanders (23-30-8), had lost seven of eight games heading into the Olympic break. They were also without forwards Frans Nielsen (hand) and Matt Martin (lower body). Both had played all 60 previous games this season, while Tavares had missed only one contest. The Islanders earlier this week recalled the entire top line from AHL Bridgeport: Lee, Ryan Strome and Mike Halmo, who made his NHL debut. Lee played two games for the Islanders last season with one goal and one assist. Strome, who assisted on Lees second tying goal, has one goal and four assists in 16 games with the Islanders this season. Nielsen, who has a career-best 18 goals, ended his streak of 189 consecutive regular-season games played. He suffered a hand injury in New Yorks last game before the break on Feb. 8. Martin had played 121 straight games and also was hurt in the Feb. 8 home loss to Colorado. The Maple Leafs (32-22-7) came in 11-2-1 before the break. Toronto is battling Montreal and Tampa Bay in the closely packed Atlantic Division as the Leafs trying to reach the playoffs for the second straight season after missing every year since 2004. The Leafs had won three straight and four of their last five at Nassau. But Nabokov was strong throughout, stopping Troy Bodie with his glove four minutes into the second and denying James Van Riemsdyk — who had three assists — in front midway through the middle period. NOTES: The Islanders are just 9-14-8 at home this season. They had lost six straight at Nassau Coliseum, including the last two before the break against Calgary and Colorado. … It was the third and final meeting between the teams this season and the only contest at Nassau Coliseum. The teams split two games at the Air Canada Centre. … The Islanders are 20-7-3 when they score at least three goals, and are 3-23-5 when they do not. TORONTO — What Mike Cammalleri lacks in stature, he makes up for in strength. The five-foot-nine Montreal Canadiens forward pushes himself to a level during gym sessions that few of his peers can match. In fact, Cammalleris off-season trainer believes hes one of the most powerful players ever to play in the NHL. “I would say that pound for pound hes definitely one of the strongest guys in the league,” Matt Nichol said Tuesday. “And maybe one of the strongest guys in the league ever, pound for pound.” Cammalleri is among 30 players currently participating in the BioSteel strength and conditioning camp under the watchful eye of Nichol and Gary Roberts. The week-long gathering combines on-ice and off-ice sessions and is designed to get players prepared for the start of training camp. Its still more than three weeks before the Habs players are scheduled to report, but Cammalleri is anxious to get going after an excellent off-season of training. “Its been good this summer,” said Cammalleri. "The last couple years Ive had to do a lot of rehab just to correct some chronic stuff and repattern some stuff that was going on in my body. Its been long, tedious work — not getting a chance to really work on my power and speed and strength, which are more fun for me to work on. … “Of the last three years, this is the best my bodys felt.” Come October, he thinks it will be reflected in his performance. “I expect this to be my best season ever,” said Cammalleri. The 29-year-old was just a teenager when he first crossed paths with Nichol at a local gym. The trainer can only shake his head in amazement while recounting the type of exercise routines he saw Cammalleri doing at that time. “I can tell you that 12 years ago when not a lot of guys were doing real true speed training — track training, doing heavy lifting, plyometrics, watching what they eat — he was,” said Nichol. “Hes absolutely committed and dedicated to it.” Cammalleri got a head start thanks to track coach Charlie Francis, whom he refers to as “one of the greatest power speed minds of our time.” As a teenager, he spent time learning from the man who once coached sprinter Ben Johnson and developed a routine that was ahead of its time. In the years since, Cammalleri has earned a reputation as a fitness nut, but its not something that bothers him. “I think its becoming more the norm,” he said. “I just enjoy it, I try and learn as much as I can about it. Like anything you might be passionate about, you probably tend to talk about it more than other things. Thats maybe where the reputation comes in.” It also comes from those who have seen him in action. Anaheim Ducks forward Andrew Cogliano has spent much of the summer working out alongside Cammalleri and describes his demeanour in the gym as being fairly intense. “Hes very fit, he takes it seriously,” said Cogliano. Nichol believes the ability to go from joking around one minute to focusing on an exercise the next one is a key to Cammalleris success. As a strength coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs years ago, it was the type of thing he saw regularly from Roberts and Mats Sundin. “As soon as theyre under the bar, as soon as theyre in the starting position for a sprint, as soon as its time to get the job done and get to work, they get it done,” said Nichol. “Its a whole different kind of focus.” The rewards that come from elite off-ice training arent just physical. Despite being one of the shorter players in the NHL, Cammalleri can skate around the ice with confidence knowing that he doesnt give up anything in strength. “When you see a guy like Mike come in here, (hes) lifting with or sometimes outlifting bigger guys,” said Nichol. "That gives him the mental boost that he knows: Hey you know what? That guy might be bigger than me but it doesnt mean he has to be stronger than me. “Guys like Mike, they take great pride in beating those bigger guys. They dont want to keep up with them, they want to beat the big guy. Its a real mindset.” It goes even further than that for Cammalleri. He sees it as a way of life. “I enjoy learning more about living a healthier lifestyle and feeling good,” said Cammalleri. "It brings me some happiness. At the end of the day were all searching for happiness. … For me, usually the better I feel, the better I play, the more happy I am, the better I treat people in my life. “Its all kind of a positive thing.” . – The Chicago Cubs say they have agreed to one-year contracts with pitchers Jason Hammel and James McDonald. Lee doubled and scored in his debut, Buerhle struck out a season-best eight over 7 2-3 innings and Miami beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-0 Thursday to split the four-game series. MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens swept their way into the second round of the NHL playoffs, but not before the Tampa Bay Lightning made it interesting. After the Canadiens blew a two-goal lead early in the third period, Max Pacioretty scored on a power play with 43 seconds left to play to lift them to a 4-3 victory and a sweep of their Eastern Conference quarter-final against the Lightning on Tuesday night. “Its a great feeling,” said Pacioretty, a 39-goal scorer in the regular season who got his first of the series. "Ive been in a bit of a drought since the end of the year. “Ive been getting opportunities and missing my chances. But you wait for that bounce and I got it.” Montreal won the best-of-seven series 4-0 and now face a long wait for the Eastern Conference semifinal against the winner of the Boston-Detroit series. Pacioretty, who played for the United States at the Sochi Olympics in February, is glad for the rest. “Going to Sochi and not having much time off, I feel this is going to be a good chance for me to get in the weight room and find some strength for round two,” he said. “We have to take advantage of it and try to stay sharp as a group at the same time,” added Canadiens captain Brian Gionta. It was Montreals first sweep since they took out the Buffalo Sabres in four in 1993 en route to the last of their 24 Stanley Cups. The Canadiens built a 3-1 lead on goals from Daniel Briere, Lars Eller and Brendan Gallagher between one by Tampa Bays Ondrej Palat. But the Bolts amped up the pressure in the third period and tied the game through Victor Hedman and Tyler Johnson. The officials had swallowed their whistles through most of the third frame, but referee Chris Lee was left with little choice with Cedric Paquettes clear trip on Michael Bournival with 2:11 left to play, a foul that could have caused an even more controversial turnover. Pacioretty was at the doorstep to whack a Thomas Vanek rebound past Kristers Gudlevskis for the game-winner. “Im not going to worry too much about that penalty,” said the rookie Paquette, who had been a ball of energy for Tampa Bay all game. “They didnt call anything all game long. It just happened at the wrong time. He fell, and they called it. Ill just have to learn from that.” Lightning star Steven Stamkos didnt like the call either, but didnt dispute the Canadiens had the better of the play for most of the series against the rookie-laden Bolts lineup. “We played like we had nothing to lose in the third,” said Stamkos. "We were the better team. "It was tough to see a penalty called at that time in the game. I thought the referees did a good job of putting their whistles away and letting us play in the third. But a play 200 feet from our net gets called. Its a tough way to lose — a power play goal with under a minute left to play in the game. “But we learned a lot about what it takes to win in the playoffs. Lets not kid ourselves: they were the better team for most of the series.” For a second straight game, the Bell Centre was at a fever pitch with old-time popp star Ginette Reno singing the Canadian anthem.dddddddddddd But while it took Rene Bourque only 11 seconds in to score the first goal in Game 3, this time it took 2:24 for Briere to open the scoring. The Lightning defence abandoned the front of their net to chase Dale Weise in a corner and left Briere alone in front to score his first of the series and 51st playoff goal of his career. The 36-year-old Briere, whose mother played Reno records in their home when he was growing up, had shaken hands with the Quebec pop diva as she left the ice. “I guess she gave me a little energy when she walked off the ice and shook my hand,” said Briere. "It worked on the first shift. “Maybe we could get a little seat for her right by the bench so she can touch all the guys.” The Canadiens had a 15-6 shot advantage in the period and made it 2-0 when Gionta picked Paquettes pocket in the neutral zone and sent Eller in on the left side to blast a low shot past Anders Lindback. The Lightning caught a break while killing a penalty at 4:32 of the second frame when Alexei Emelin misplayed a puck behind the net and Palat swept around and pushed the puck in among a pile-up of players. The goal stood up to video review. But only 1:10 later, Tomas Plekenec sent Gallagher in on the right side to wrist a shot in off the post to restore the two-goal lead. The 21-year-old has five goals in nine career playoff games. That chased Lindback, who allowed three goals on 20 shots, in favour of Gudlevskis, who made 16 saves before Pacioretty finally beat him. There were flashbacks to Sochi as Gudlevskis was the goalie who threw a scare into Canada with a 55-save effort in Latvias 2-1 defeat. Carey Price was to goalie in the opposite net in that game as well. “Hes a very good goaltender,” said Price. "He made a few good stops, but we were hungry and found a way to put one in. “They were playing desperate. They came at us with a lot of speed. Desperate teams tend to get more breaks, for some reason.” Added Pacioretty of Gudlevskis: “It would have been a nice story. Hes a competitor and hes had a lot of success this year. My job was the make sure it wouldnt be a story and it didnt change the series.” The Lightning poured it on in the third and Hedman scored at 3:29 by banking a shot in off Price from behind the net. Three minutes later, J.T. Brown threw a pass in front that went off P.K. Subbans skate right to Johnson for a goal on a quick shot from close range. Then Pacioretty ended it, giving each of Montreals four lines one goal. It was only the second power play goal of the series for the Canadiens. “I knew I had to step up,” Pacioretty said. "Ive been frustrated lately and the only thing that kept me sane was the team winning and other people scoring. “When you realize you can end the series with one shot, that frustration goes away for a brief moment and thats what happened.” Notes: The Lightning pulled Radko Gudas, who has a suspected lower body injury, and Tom Pyatt from the lineup and put in Mike Kostka and Keith Aulie. . . Montreal made no changes. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

Two female Olympians have never met in the UFC octagon, and Rousey jumped on the chance to accomplish another MMA first, even if its just 56 days after she was booed out of the octagon for refusing to shake hands after her last victory over Miesha Tate. “Im super stoked, and its even better its happening with the Sochi Winter Olympics,” Rousey said. “It just seems like this is the absolute perfect time for it to happen.” Rousey (8-0) has become one of mixed martial arts biggest stars since her UFC debut in February 2013, and shell soon be a movie star as well. But Rousey realizes she owes her fame and fortune to judo, which took her around the world and eventually to the Beijing Olympics six years ago. With her victory over Tate on Dec. 28 still fresh in her mind, Rousey returns at the Mandalay Bay Events Center against McMann (7-0), who won silver in freestyle wrestling at the Athens Games in 2004. “Its a big challenge,” Rousey said. “Its the biggest one Ive had to this day. I think its showing how quickly the womens division is progressing. The men, theyve had a lot of Olympians and guys with Olympic backgrounds competing before, but this is the first time weve had two undefeated Olympic medallists fighting for a title.” Rouseys Olympic experience defines everything she does in MMA. Her judo skills have been her defining strength in the octagon, where she grabs and throws opponents to the canvas seemingly at will before landing her signature armbar submission on every fighter she has ever faced. She also learned the discipline necessary to be successful in MMA from the decidedly unglamorous world of judo, where internal politics eventually soured her on the sport. After she picked up MMA a few years ago, she found it suited her perfectly. Its much the same story for McMann, who wasnt sure what to do after her wrestling career until she found a new sport. “I do it for different reasons, but (Rousey and McMann) come from sports where you dont really make any money,” said McMann, who has a young daughter. “Youre just doing it because of love of doing it,” she added. “But at some point, when you have to work full-time and you have a family, you cant do all those things. There are just not enough hours in the day. So if you can do what you love to do and train professionally and then spend time with your family, thats an awesome, rare thing to be able to do.” Cormier has a similar story, taking his first professional MMA fight in 2009 only after making two Olympic wrestling teams and winning gold at the Pan-Am Games. After winning his first two UFC fights as a heavyweight, he has dropped down to light heavyweight to avoid having to fight his teammate, UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. Rashad Evans was scheduled to meet Cormier at UFC 170, but dropped out with a leg injury 10 days ago, opening the door for Cummins, who had to quit his job as a barista to take the fight on late notice. Rousey isnt worried about the quick turnaround after her third-round victory over Tate in the UFCs holiday show. That fight was her first in 10 months after taking time off to film the latest sequels in the “Expendables” and “Fast and Furious” franchises. “The movie stuff was fun, but by the time it was over, I was glad,” Rousey said. “Thats why its good to do the movie stuff and fighting. By the time I was done filming, I was so ready to get back to the gym. I was sitting around Bulgaria, thinking, Man, I miss my gym.” And Rousey insists she isnt plotting her escape from the sport, even while shes getting more calls for more movies and entertainment jobs. “Im a fighter,” she said. “Thats why anyone in Hollywood is even interested in me at all.” . - Vincent Viola grew up in Brooklyn, graduated from West Point, is a former chairman of the New York Mercantile Exchange and after the Sept. TORONTO — The Oakland Athletics claimed right-hander Marcus Walden on Wednesday after he was put on waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays. Walden was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays a day earlier. He made five appearances for Toronto in spring training but did not play in a regular-season game. The 25-year-old native of Fresno, Calif., was 6-14 with a 3.71 earned-run average last season at double-A New Hampshire. Walden made three appearances at triple-A Buffalo this year, going 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA. . Rinne will continue limited physical activity for the next two weeks and, if all goes well, will be able to advance to more strenuous conditioning later in December. “In a nutshell, the doctor is happy with the progress,” Poile said. “What he is recommending is two more weeks basically of rehab if you will. December 20th is sort of a target date to hopefully get him into more strenuous activity leading back to playing.” Poile talked to reporters before Nashvilles home game against the Carolina Hurricanes Thursday night. Rinne has been sidelined since he had arthroscopic surgery on his left hip Oct. 24 as a result of a bacterial infecttion.dddddddddddd The infection developed in the same hip that was surgically repaired May 9 following the conclusion of last season. Since the surgery, Rinne has been taking antibiotics. The line is scheduled to be removed Friday, although he will continue on antibiotics as a precautionary measure. In nine games this season, Rinne is 4-4-1 with a 2.31 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage. He is a two-time finalist for the Vezina Trophy. Poile could not give a target date for Rinnes projected return to the Nashville lineup. If healthy, the Finn is thought to be a candidate to represent Finland at the Olympics in Sochi, Russia. TORONTO - Toronto FC midfielder Michael Bradley was voted into the Major League Soccer all-star team on Wednesday. Bradley is one of eight players selected to the team who also played in this years World Cup in Brazil. The MLS all-stars will compete against German giants Bayern Munich in Portland on Aug. 6. “As the quality of the league continues to go up, there are more and more better players,” said Bradley. “And so its certainly something to be proud of.” Bradley represented the United States under head coach Jurgen Klinsmann at the World Cup, starting in all four matches and picking up one assist. Bradleys U.S. World Cup teammates Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), DeAndre Yedlin (Seattle Sounders FC), Omar Gonzalez (L.A. Galaxy), and goalkeeper Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake) were also named to the all-star team Wednesday. Landon Donovan (L.A. Galaxy), Thierry Henry (New York Red Bulls), and Obafemi Martins (Seattle Sounders) round out the rest of the fan-voted selections. TFCs Julio Cesar and Jermain Defoe were close to the leading vote-getters at their respective positions, but finished outside the vote. The 26-year-old Bradley is in his first season with Toronto FC after the club reached a transfer agreement with Italian Serie A club AS Roma and signed the American international as a designated player in January. He has two goals in a combined nine appearances for TFC in all competitions, and he joins Ronnie OBrien, Jimmy Brennan and Dwayne De Rosario on Toronto FCs all-time all-stars player list. Especially on defence. Garnett and former Boston Celtics teammate Pierce had their first Brooklyn home game spoiled Saturday night as Andre Drummond 15 scored points and first-round pick Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 12 for the Detroit Pistons in a 99-88 victory on Saturday night. For the second straight game, Brooklyn had some defensive lapses inside the paint and couldnt stop the lobs that Drummond was getting at the rim. The Nets gave up 32 points in the paint after allowing 46 against the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night. “What everybody has to understand still is we are obviously still a work in progress,” Garnett said. “…Great game for us to learn from. We didnt pack the paint in as well as I think we can. We will get better.” Kyle Singler had 11 points and rookie Tony Mitchell had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Pistons. Most of the upper bowl seats were filled, while there were plenty of empty seats in the lower level empty as 16,331 attended the game, giving Garnett and Pierce a nice ovation when the starters were introduced. All that did was motivate Drummond and the Pistons. “We punched them in the mouth first. We didnt let them jump on us first,” Drummond said. “We did our best to get after them first, try to run the floor on them, try to make them run after us.” New Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks was impressed with the way his centre was active on the court, pointing out his work first-time coach Rasheed WWallace, who retired last season.dddddddddddd “Andre Drummond, in the third quarter, was running on the floor and getting those lobs,” Cheeks said. “He had one or two post moves, but it wasnt something we ran for him. . Just the way he plays is amazing to watch. I think Rasheed Wallace has been doing a good job working with him.” Andray Blatche led the Nets with 15 points. Nets point guard Deron Williams participated in pregame shooting drills but did not play in the teams second preseason game. He watched from the bench because of a right ankle he sprained during off-season workouts. Its the same injury that hampered him last season. After committing 24 turnovers in their preseason opener, Brooklyn had 21 against the Pistons. Nets backup point guard Tyshawn Taylor left the arena in a walking boot after he sprained his right foot, leaving Brooklyn with one healthy player at the point, the inexperienced Jorge Gutierrez, to backup Shaun Livingston while Williams heals up. “I mean hes going to be the engine thats going to drive this team at both ends of the court before we could really see how were going to reach our full potential,” Pierce said of Williams. “So you know, its up to us with the guys that we have out there to continue to get better, to continue to understand what were trying to accomplish each and every night.” Livingston started in Williams place, finishing with two points and seven assists. Joe Johnson and Brook Lopez played into the third quarter, while Garnett and Pierce sat out the second half. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

OAKLAND, Calif. — Golden State coach Mark Jackson has a suggestion for fans of both the Warriors and the Clippers: Dont show up for Game 5 in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. Jackson was responding to questions Monday about how fans in Los Angeles should react to the purported comments of Clippers owner Donald Sterling telling a woman not to bring black people to his games or associate with them. The Warriors coach said: “I believe if it was me, I wouldnt come to the game. I believe the fans, the loudest statement that they can make as fans is to not show up to the game.” Jackson said players have families to worry about and are getting paid to be there but fans “cannot allow someone with these feelings to profit.” . But the left-hander knows that getting to this point — nearly two years removed from shoulder surgery — was anything but easy. “Its been a long, frustrating road to get back to here,” Danks said. "There were some days where you were having to fight doubt from creeping in. “I think Im beyond that.” Gordon Beckham and Dayan Viciedo hit two-run home runs, Danks pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Chicago White Sox snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. The slumping White Sox had managed a total of six runs in their previous four games, but busted through with a slew of clutch hits. It was plenty of support for Danks (6-5), who settled down after a somewhat slow start and gave up two runs — one earned — and five hits in 6 1-3 innings. In his last five starts, the left-hander is 3-1 with a 1.51 ERA. His ERA for the season is down to 3.97. “He has really gotten it together, from where he started early in the year,” manager Robin Ventura said. “He has pitched to where hes always giving us a chance right now. He becomes tough when he has the feel of the changeup like that and spotting his fastball. It just seems like he has a little more on it as far as spotting his fastball.” Viciedo, who was just 2 for 23 on the homestand before Tuesday, went 2 for 4. His fifth-inning blast ended a stretch of 51 at-bats without an RBI. Hunter Pence went 2 for 4 with a home run for the Giants, who have dropped four straight and seven of eight. Giants starter Matt Cain (1-5) allowed eight runs — seven earned — and 10 hits in five innings. “He got off to a good start,” San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said of Cain. “Those first two innings, he looked real sharp. He looked like he was on track. Then the third inning got a little long there, long at-bat and he ended up giving up a home run. Then he just got deraileed.dddddddddddd.” Pence opened the scoring with a homer in the first inning, and the Giants made it 2-0 with an unearned run in the third. The White Sox tied it in the bottom of the third as Adam Eaton singled with two outs, stole second and then trotted home on Beckhams two-run shot. Chicago took a 5-2 lead with three runs in the fourth. Jose Abreu led off with a single and one out later Alexei Ramirez and Viciedo both singled to load the bases. Alejandro De Aza popped up in foul ground on the first pitch for the second out, but Tyler Flowers drew a walk to drive in a run and make it 3-2. Eaton followed with a slow grounder to shortstop that Brandon Crawford fielded cleanly but threw wide of first base after rushing to get the speedy Eaton. Eaton was credited with a single and one RBI as both Ramirez and Viciedo scored for the three-run lead. Crawford was charged with an error for allowing the second run to score and both runners (Flowers and Eaton) to advance a base. Chicago added three runs in the fifth to break the game open. Adam Dunn had an RBI single and two batters later Viciedo hit a two-run, two-out homer for an 8-2 margin. “We needed it,” Beckham said. “It was nice to break out against a good team.” NOTES: Bochy was a teammate of Tony Gwynns and later managed the Hall of Famer, who died Monday. “Just a huge loss for baseball and San Diego,” Bochy said. “We all know what a great player he was and a great hitter. But he is getting recognized for being such a tremendous person.” … White Sox C Tyler Flowers had a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run, but is 18 for his last 111 at-bats with 50 Ks as his average dropped to .247. … Giants OF Angel Pagan (lower back) was out of the lineup for a second straight game and is listed as day-to-day. … C Buster Posey was used at DH after taking a foul off mask on Sunday. … The finale of the brief two-game series has a marquee pitching matchup of RHP Tim Hudson (7-2, 1.81) vs. LHP Chris Sale (5-1. 1.97). DOHA, Qatar - George Coetzee of South Africa needed just 21 putts to shoot an 8-under-par 64 for a one-shot lead on the opening day of the Qatar Masters on Wednesday. Coetzee eagled the par-5 10th hole and birdied his closing three holes in a round that was just two shots more than his best on the European Tour, a 62 which equalled the Old Course record at St. Andrews in Scotland 15 months ago. “I was quite lucky to get away with a few shots,” he said. “Theres a lot of luck involved in this game, especially the way I play, and I had 21 putts with a three-putt, so that goes to show.” On 7 under were Dawie Van Der Walt, among five South Africans in the top 13, and Steve Webster of England, who began in spectacular manner by holing a 254-yard, 5-wood second shot for an albatross at his opening hole, the 548-yard, par-5 10th. There were only two spectators around the green, and one of them was jumping up and down and pointing in a downward motion. “I didnt know whether he was inferring it had gone over the back of the green and onto rocks, but then when I got up there he starts clapping,” Webster said. “Ive never been 3 under after one hole before, so it was all a bit strange after that. You start thinking is this my day, or have I had all my luck on the first?” It was the second albatross in three events this year, whereas there was just one on the tour in 2013. Webster, who celebrated his 39th birthday last Friday, picked up five birdies over his next 12 holes to lead on 8 under, then dropped a shot at his 15th. Four players were in fourth place on 6 under, while the former British Open-winning trio of Ernie Els, John Daly and Scotlands Paul Lawrie were among a group at 5 under. Els ended the first round in his 25th anniversary pro career season holing a 35-yard bunker shot on 18 for eagle. “That was a dream finish, thats always going to put a smile on your face,” said Els, the 2005 Qatar winner. “I played quite nicely all day but didnt quite get my share of putts, so that bunker shot at the last really made up for everything.” Lawrie also had an eagle, on the 16th, while Daly birdied his first three holes and two of his closing three. “Ive started off this year putting really, really well, and just made three bombs to start with today,” Daly said. “But I just got into trouble a couple of times with the driver, so it was my putting that kept me in there.” Henrik Stenson bounced back from missing the halfway cut last week in Abu Dhabi with a 68. U.S. PGA champion Jason Dufner, competing in Qatar for the second year running, carded 70. The Flyers announced Wednesday that Steve Mason will not suit up for the opener of this best-of-seven series. Ray Emery will get the start instead and Cal Heeter, who made his NHL debut Sunday in a loss to Carolina, will serve as the backup. Watch the game on TSN and TSN GO at 7pm et/4pm pt. In 36 career playoff games, Emery is 20-15 with a 2.57 goals-against average, .903 save percentage and three shutouts. He led Ottawa to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2007, but hasnt seen action in the postseason since playing for Anaheim in 2011. Emery was the backup to Corey Crawford in Chicagos run to a Stanley Cup title last spring, but didnt get into a game. “I get excited to play in these situations, especially the playoffs, especially with a group like this,” Emery said. Of course, Henrik Lundqvist will be the goaltender across the rink from Emery. The Rangers undisputed No. 1 netminder had another solid campaign in 2013-14, setting club records for regular season wins and shutouts along the way. Although the 32-year-old Swede was 33-24-5 with a 2.36 goals against average and .920 save percentage it still was a down season by Lundqvists lofty standards. His GAA was the highest its been since Lundqvist posted a 2.38 in 2009-10 and the netminders save percentage was his worst effort since finishing the 2008-09 campaign at .916. New York only has made it out of the second round once since Lundqvist took over the starting role in 2005-06, but its hardly been his fault. In 67 playoff games, Lundqvist has posted a 2.28 GAA and .920 save percentage. The Flyers and Rangers have been divisional rivals for decades, but this series marks the first playoff meeting between the clubs since 1997 when Philadelphia downed New York in five games for the Eastern Conference title. Overall, Philadelphia has won six of the 10 playoff series between the franchises and has claimed three straight and four of the past five encounters. The Flyers and Rangers split four meetings in 2013-14, with each team winning twice at its home arena. New Yorks home-ice advantage could loom large in this series, as the Blueshirts have claimed eight in a row at home against the Flyers, who last won at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 20, 2011. The Rangers finished second in the Metropolitan Division and two points ahead of Philadelphia to capture home ice in this series. Flyers captain and star centerman Claude Giroux only managed two assists in the four meetings with the Rangers this season and thats certainly not a good sign for Philadelphia.dddddddddddd Forward Matt Read and defenseman Mark Streit were the best offensive players for the Flyers in the season series, posting one goal and two assists apiece. Meanwhile, New Yorks best weapon against the Flyers this season was speedy forward Chris Kreider, who had two goals and two assists in three games against Philly but does not expect to play in this set. Brad Richards had one goal and two assists over four games, while Rick Nash had a goal and an assist in three outings. Lundqvist went 2-1-0 with a 2.03 GAA against the Flyers this season. Emery did not face New York this season, but is 7-2-0 with a 1.87 GAA in 10 career regular-season games against the Blueshirts. One concern for New York heading into the opening round is the health of No. 1 defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who sat out the last five games of the regular season with a bruised left shoulder. Although McDonagh expects to play in Game 1, it will be interesting to see how his shoulder holds up against the postseason grind. McDonagh led New Yorks blue line this season in goals (14), assists (29), plus-minus (plus-11), penalty minutes (36) and shots (177). He also led the club with an average ice time of 24 minutes, 59 seconds and finished fifth on the teams overall scoring list with 43 points. Rangers forward Derick Brassard left practice on Tuesday with a back issue, but expects to play tonight. Brassard was fourth on the team this season with 45 points off 18 goals and 27 assists. Philadelphias Steve Downie is out with an upper-body injury, but fellow forward Zac Rinaldo could play Thursday after completing a four-game suspension. Rinaldo received the ban for delivering a head shot against Buffalo defenseman Chad Ruhwedel on April 6. New York will host the second tilt of this series on Sunday before the venue shifts to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4. The Rangers were 20-17-4 as the home club this season, while Philly was 18-16-7 as the guest. SOCHI, Russia – It was the third game of the Olympics for the Canadians in Torino, Italy when the wall of Martin Gerber emerged in shocking fashion. Gerber stopped each and every one of the 49 shots peppered by Team Canada en route to a highly improbable 2-0 victory for Switzerland. In a two-week tournament like the Olympics, goaltending performances of that caliber have the potential to shock, rattle and awe even the most powerful foes, hindering medal hopes with save after unlikely save. Eight years after Gerber shook up what was an ultimately doomed 2006 Canadian bid – they finished seventh – lies another Swiss goaltender in Jonas Hiller capable of doing the same, if not more, at the Sochi Olympics. “Every year at a tournament like this you need a good goalkeeper to have success,” said Andreas Ambuhl, a winger for Switzerland and teammate of Hiller for years with Davos in the Swiss League, “especially a team like us.” Switzerland is still buzzing from a silver medal finish at the 2013 World Championships – the now 39-year-old Gerber teaming with Calgary netminder Reto Berra – and though they have no grand illusions about their chances at these Olympics, possession of a goaltender like Hiller poses at least the possibility of a little unlikely noise. Hiller is back to top form in Anaheim after a couple bumpy seasons punctuated by injuries. The 31-year-old stopped 36 of 38 shots in his final game before the Olympics and owns a .943 save percentage in his last five starts. “Theres no doubt,” said Swiss head coach Sean Simpson, a Canadian and former Chicago Blackhawks draft pick who has yet to actually coach Hiller during his four-year run as bench boss of Switzerlands national program. “Any of the goalies, they stand on their head they can make a difference in a one-game scenario thats for sure.” Simpson would consider a trip to the quarterfinals as success for his squad, which sits in a group with Sweden, Latvia and the Czech Republic. In the past 50 years the Swiss have never finished higher than sixth which they managed during that unlikely 06 run with Gerber at the forefront. Sizzling efforts in goal have the potential to alter the face of the Olympics, both for powerhouses like Canada, who must decide between Carey Price and Roberto Luongo, and lesser limelight squads like the Swiss. Its why Finland still holds dark-horse medal potential despite losing potential captain Mikko Koivu and second centre Valteri Filpulla to injury. With Tuukka Rask, Antii Niemi and Kari Lehtonen as sterling options between the pipes, the Finns have the goods in goal to rattle more than a few cages. It was during those same 06 Olympics in Torino that then-Flyers goaltender and Finnish product Antero Niittymaki carried his country to a silver medal – they fell to Sweden, who was led by Henrik Lundqvist – leading the tournament with a mighty .951 save percentage. One need only remember the heroic efforts of Dominik Hasek in 1998. Hasek allowed just six goals in Nagano – posting a crazy .971 save percentage – willing the Czech Republic to their first and only gold medal. “Theres going to be lots of strong goalies here,” said Simpson. “Jonas, hes got a great personality and hes going to give the team a lot of confidence when hes in net there for sure.” .
