Téma: Jak postupovat / and bad." And it did on Satu NEW YORK — Max Scherzer did most everything on the mound this season — led the majors in wins, started the All-Star game, helped put his team in the playoffs. . Now, the newly minted AL Cy Young Award winner said he will “wait and see” whether hes returning to the Detroit Tigers next year. Scherzer went 21-3 and was an easy pick Wednesday as the American Leagues top pitcher, drawing 28 of 30 first-place votes from members of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers won the NL Cy Young Award for the second time in three seasons, coming within one vote of a unanimous selection. Scherzer — like Kershaw — can become a free agent after the 2014 season, and the Tigers are trying to figure out if they can afford him along with all their other stars such as Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Justin Verlander. Thats prompted talk they might trade Scherzer before opening day. “I love it here in Detroit,” Scherzer said on a conference call. “Who wouldnt want to be a part of this?” “The business side will take care of itself,” he said. “It really depends on what Detroit wants to do.” Scherzer and agent Scott Boras said theyre open to talking to the Tigers about an extension. Scherzer lost only three times this season and was the lone 20-game winner in baseball. He ranked second in the majors with 240 strikeouts and was fifth in the AL with a 2.90 ERA. The 29-year-old righty smiled and raised both arms Wednesday when the Cy Young results were announced. “Its unbelievable. It just vindicates everything Ive done,” Scherzer said, acknowledging all the run support he received from Detroits powerful lineup probably helped his candidacy. “Ive been working so hard all these years to get better and better,” he added. “I think I took a big step forward in 2013.” Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers was second, marking the highest finish by a Japanese-born pitcher in Cy Young voting. Hisashi Iwakuma of the Seattle Mariners came in third. “It was an honour to be a finalist for the American League Cy Young Award,” Darvish said in a statement. “Both Max Scherzer and Hisashi Iwakuma had tremendous seasons. Max is a very deserving winner.” Texas is the only AL team thats never won a Cy Young Award. Before Darvish and Iwakuma, the highest Cy Young finishes for Japanese pitchers had been fourth place, by Hideo Nomo in the NL in 1995 and 1996, and by Daisuke Matsuzaka in the AL in 2008. “It is such an honour to be one of the finalists for the best award as a pitcher,” Iwakuma said in a statement before the voting totals were released. “I had never thought I would become a finalist here in the U.S., so this is very special to me and is a big surprise.” Scherzer won his first 13 decisions of the season and made the All-Star team for the first time. He helped pitch the Tigers to their third straight AL Central title, joined in a deep rotation by Verlander, the 2011 AL Cy Young Award winner, Anibal Sanchez and Doug Fister. Scherzer went 16-7 last year, then added a curveball to an impressive repertoire that already included a hard fastball, slider and changeup. He beat Oakland as a starter and in relief during the AL division series, then went 0-1 in two starts against Boston in the AL championship series — he was pulled both times with the Tigers ahead. Scherzer is distinctive for more than just his record. His eyes are different colours, with the right blue and left brown. Hes also unusual for another reason: Hes made 174 regular-season and post-season starts for Detroit and Arizona, yet has never pitched a complete game. Scherzer threw eight innings on seven occasions this year, and sometimes was taken out with a big lead. His big strikeout totals tend to run up his pitch counts, and he said he wants to be more efficient in the future. And maybe even pitch a complete game. “It is definitely something I want to achieve,” he said. “To throw a complete game, you have to have the right context of the game.” Darvish led the majors with 277 strikeouts and went 13-9 with a 2.83 ERA. Iwakuma was 14-6 with a 2.66 ERA and 185 strikeouts for the Mariners. Sanchez was fourth and Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox was fifth. They each got a first-place vote. Kershaw won his second prize as the National Leagues best pitcher after posting a 1.83 ERA — lowest in the majors in 13 years. “This is such a cool thing. I cant even explain what it means to me,” he said in an interview on MLB Network. “It really is a huge honour.” The 25-year-old lefty with a big-breaking curve drew 29 of 30 first-place votes. Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals was picked first on one ballot and finished second. Kershaw went 16-9 and topped the NL with 232 strikeouts. He also won the Cy Young Award in 2011 and finished second last year to knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Darvish gets a $200,000 bonus and a $1 million raise to $11 million next season. Wainwright gets a $100,000 bonus and Sale gets $60,000 for finishing fifth. The AL and NL Most Valuable Player awards will be presented Thursday. Téma: Jak postupovat / Dwight Howard vs.LUCER DETROIT — The Tampa Bay Lightning ended almost 20 years of futility at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday night. Teddy Purcells goal at 3:51 of overtime gave Tampa Bay a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings. It was the Lightnings first win in Detroit since Jan. 12, 1994. They had been 0-10-1 at Joe Louis Arena since then and had an all-time record in Detroit of 1-13-1. “That was in the past. There a new staff, a new team,” Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. “We need to win games here if were going to have any chance of making the playoffs.” The teams are now both in the Eastern Conferences Atlantic Division. Ryan Malone and Steven Stamkos also scored for Tampa Bay. Ben Bishop stopped 25 shots. “We stayed with it and its a good feeling right now,” Stamkos said. Henrik Zetterberg scored both goals for Detroit, which lost its fifth straight at home. Jimmy Howard made 31 saves. “In the end we got ourselves a point in a game we could have come up with nothing. So good for us,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “What I didnt like was when we lost our composure, when we gave up chances for no reason. Their speed with our inability to move the puck from the back today made us slower. I thought they were a quicker team than we were.” Purcell got his fifth goal, from the slot, after a pass from Richard Panik preceded by Kyle Quinceys turnover behind the Detroit net. “Panik made a great play on the forecheck to pressure him and was able to throw it out in front,” Purcell said. Babcock said: “We had the puck and Q (Quincey) was coming around the net and their guy was quicker and stole it from him.” Zetterberg tied the game with 4:12 left in the third on a slap shot from the right circle for his second of the game and 10th goal of the season. Stamkos gave the Lightning a 2-1 lead with 7:10 left in the second period. He beat Howard with a wrist shot from the right circle. Stamkos 14th goal came four seconds after Tampa Bay had killed off 5:24 of consecutive Detroit power-play time with 36 seconds of it a two-man advantage. In all, the Lightning had only been at even strength for 13 seconds of the previous 7:37 when the final penalty ended. “That was probably the turning point,” Purcell said. “… Very difficult to kill six or eight minutes of a power play. And then Stammer gets one shot and scores.” The goal extended Stamkos goal streak to six games and his points streak to eight. The Red Wings have scored on only one of their past 20 power-play chances. “It was better tonight than last game. Its something we have to work on. Its really important to take advantage of that,” Zetterberg said. “You got to practice on it, put more time on it. We have to really bear down when we get our chances and score goals.” Zetterberg opened the scoring 3:51 into the game when he intercepted Stamkos pass in the slot and put a wrist shot past Bishop. Malone tied it at 1 with 9:49 remaining in the opening period when he put in the rebound of his own wrap-around attempt. It was Malones second goal. Téma: Jak postupovat / oulder essentially gave out CLEVELAND — Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona has said all season that Carlos Santana will hit. That faith is finally being rewarded. Santanas leadoff homer in the fourth inning lifted Cleveland to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night and continued a hot June for a hitter who struggled for the first two months. “It was inevitable,” Francona said. “Hes too good a hitter.” The win, which was also sparked by Asdrubal Cabreras two-run homer in the first, moved the Indians (36-35) over the .500 mark. Although Santana is hitting .191 for the season, hes batting .333 (13 for 39) with three homers and nine RBIs in June. “The good thing is, its not just singles, hes going to hit home runs and get extra base hits,” Francona said. “We survived to a point with him really being cold and as hes getting hot its going to help our offence.” Both home runs came off Jered Weaver (7-6), who lost for the first time in 10 career starts at Progressive Field. Weaver was 6-0 and allowed 11 earned runs in 60 1-3 innings in nine starts at the Indians ballpark going into the game. The Indians managed to win despite having a thin bullpen, forcing starter Trevor Bauer (2-3) to throw 119 pitches — a season high for Cleveland — in 6 2-3 innings. With closer Cody Allen and setup man Bryan Shaw both unavailable after pitching the last three days, Carlos Carrasco worked 2 1-3 innings for his first career save. “Carlos pitched really well, that was a huge lift for us,” Francona said. “The way he was pitching I didnt want to take him out, and there was no reason to take him out.” Indians left fielder Michael Brantley left the game in the fifth for precautionary reasons after receiving a blow to the head and neck area while trying to break up a double play in the third. “He banged the side of his head on that slide,” Francona said. “He passed all the concussion tests, which is good. His neck is a little stiff. Well see how he is when he comes in (Tuesday).” The Angels have lost four of five since winning five straight. Weaver allowed four runs in six innings. The right-handers 1.64 ERA going into Monday was the lowest in ballpark history with a minimum of 50 innings pitched, according to STATS LLC. Weaver had allowed three earned runs in 43 innings over his last six starts in Cleveland before losing Monday. “I know that Ive thrown well in this park but I didnt know that it was that good,” he said. “Nothing else to say, just cant stay away from the homer.” Bauer, who pitched around trouble all game, allowed three runs for his first win since May 20 and wasnt bothered by his high pitch count. “I can go 130, 150 or 200,” he said. “I did that in college. Im used to throwing.” Carrasco, who was moved to the bullpen last month after pitching poorly as a starter, struck out Howie Kendrick to end the seventh and worked around a walk and a single in the eighth. He retired Mike Trout and Albert Pujols to start the ninth and struck out Josh Hamilton on three pitches to end the game. “I want to help the team whether its starting or in the bullpen,” Carrasco said. “Right now the bullpen is where I am.” Cabreras homer gave Cleveland the lead, but Chris Iannetta tied the game with a two-run double in the second. After the Indians went ahead again on Brantleys RBI single in the third, John McDonalds sacrifice fly in the fourth tied the game. Santana homered deep into the seats in right field on a 2-2 pitch. The switch-hitter is 10 for 19 with two homers lifetime against Weaver. Cabreras drive cleared the 19-foot wall in left field. Angels manager Mike Scioscia came on the field to speak with the umpires, but the call was upheld after a crew chief review. McDonald started at shortstop in place of Erick Aybar, who has a sore left hip. Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving took batting practice with the Indians and threw out the first pitch. NOTES: Aybar had a pinch-hit single in the eighth. … Francona said RHP Zach McAllister (sore back) will start Thursday. McAllister has been on the 15-day DL since May 22. … LHP Tyler Skaggs (strained right hamstring) will pitch a simulated game Tuesday. … The Indians signed LHP Justus Sheffield, the 31st overall pick in the draft. Sheffield, 18, turned down an offer from Vanderbilt to sign with Cleveland. … Angels RHP Matt Shoemaker (3-1) faces RHP Josh Tomlin (4-3) on Tuesday. Y DUNEDIN, Fla. — Mark Buehrle works quickly. “Very few guys do it, but the guys that do it, they have success,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. “Good or bad, its over fast.” Making his second start of spring training, Buehrle allowed one run and three hits in two innings Friday as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4. Buehrle struck out two and walked two, finishing by retiring Sean Rodriguez on a flyout to escape a bases-loaded jam. “I know its spring training and results dont matter as much, but I still like to get outs,” Buehrle said. “I dont like getting hit around, giving up runs. It was a pride factor.” Buehrle wasnt proud to have walked Desmond Jennings twice. He did joke about his strikeouts of Rodriguez and Tim Beckham. “A couple of guys thought they were changeups,” he said. “No. That was my fastball.” Jennings singled in his only other plate appearance in the fifth, then stole two bases and scored his second run on Sean Rodriguezs sacrifice fly. Shelley Duncan then tied the score at 3 with a solo homer. Rays starter Jake Odorizzi struck out two in the first, including Jose Bautista after third baseman Chris Gimenez failed to locate his foul popup near the line. Téma: Jak postupovat / , has been red-hot to star ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Jonathan Bernier sported retro-coloured pads and a navy Maple Leafs toque atop his mask in a blustery Winter Classic at the Big House. “It was actually keeping me warm,” said Bernier with a sly grin of the extra insulation, “and I thought it looked good.” The 25-year-old remained a fiery difference-maker yet again for the Leafs on Wednesday afternoon. Bernier stopped 41 of 43 Detroit shots in front of 105,591 spectators at Michigan Stadium as his club won three straight for the first time since late October, edging the Red Wings 3-2 in the shootout. Bernier has, for the moment at least, snatched control of the Toronto crease. On Wednesday he became the first Leaf goaltender to start four straight all season and owns a scorching .950 save percentage in his past six games. “We look at it and say that Jonathan Bernier has come in and given us a chance and given us an opportunity in games and thats really what were looking for,” Randy Carlyle said after the historic tilt in front of a record crowd at the football stadium in Ann Arbor. “[But] we feel that James Reimer has done the same. Right now, [Jonathan] is on a little bit of a run and as long as he can continue to provide us with the level of goaltending that he has it would be foolish for us to look another direction.” Facing at least 40 shots for the seventh time already this season, Bernier had another busy, yet effective night. He may have been at his best in a windy second frame. With his team under siege and already trailing 1-0 on a goal from Daniel Alfredsson, Bernier first turned aside Daniel Cleary on a partial breakaway before stopping the scary duo of Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg moments later. “If we wouldve went down 2-0 there it wouldve been very difficult to come back given the condition of the ice,” said Joffrey Lupul afterward. The Leafs rallied on the efforts of their goaltender shortly after with James van Riemsdyk ending an eight-game dry spell with his 15th this season before the visitors moved ahead on a nifty redirection from Tyler Bozak. Detroit tied it with less than seven minutes to go in the final period before Toronto raked in the extra point in the shootout. The victory pushed the Leafs to 47 points on the year, one up on their Original Six rival. They have now registered at least a point in six consecutive games, turning the corner somewhat from a miserable stretch that began at the outset of November. As for Bernier, he continued whats been an excellent first half for Torontos goaltending. To proclaim him the Leafs No. 1 though after a strong string of starts would be unwise, especially in light of the stability Reimer has offered with a .924 save percentage in 18 starts this season. Carlyle is sure to continue rotating between the two while riding the hot hand when it emerges. “I know that there has been this constant ‘Whos number one? question hovering over our hockey club,” said Carlyle. “I know youre tired of hearing it and you think Im full of it when I say 1A and 1B, but thats what I believe in and I think competition for the position allows people to compete and bring the best out of them.” Five Points 1. Road to the Winter Classic Ends Carlyle was famously opposed to the all-encompassing presence of HBO en route to Wednesdays Winter Classic and couldnt have been happier to have it conclude on this day. “Its been a long three weeks, thats for sure,” he said, still sporting a ball cap atop his suit. “With whats gone on with our hockey club, the way weve played, the inconsistencies that weve played to and the microscope that weve been under you get to see a lot of it. Theres a lot of things that are going on inside that are hard to deal with it when youre always constantly under a camera or a microphone.” Just as those cameras from the 24/7 series exit, the Leafs have ever-so-subtly turned a corner, picking up points in six consecutive games. They have just two regulation wins though in the past 21 games – winning five shootouts – and were outshot 43-26 by the Red Wings on Wednesday. “The general feeling in the room was that we got through a really, really tough stretch in December with a lot of travel and a lot of games in a short period of time,” said Lupul. “And [we] probably didnt have the results we wouldve liked, but we kind of kept our head above water there and now were getting some bodies back in the lineup, getting more healthy and hopefully this is the turning point for us where we can kind of put something together.” 2. Wintery Conditions To combat the freezing of his blocker in the chilly conditions, Bernier employed unusual measures. “The trainer would give me hot-packs and I would just put [the blocker] in my pants as well, try to keep it warm.” Snow fell vigorously on the ice surface at the Big House from start to finish, a crew with shovels clearing the surface frequently. “I was watching them shovel it,” said Dion Phaneuf, who notched a pair of assists a day after signing a seven-year extension, “and you could see the piles by the time they done there it was this high coming off the ice [raises hand about a foot off the ground]. “The ice conditions were really good,” he continued. “The ice was real hard, but the snow on it made it difficult to keep the puck flat.” “Everyones hands and feet were a little cold,” added Lupul, “but other than that it wasnt too bad.” 3. Gleason Acquisition In looking to upgrade their defence on Wednesday, the Leafs swapped a player/contract in John-Michael Liles who didnt fit under Carlyle for one in Tim Gleason who promises to gain at least a more consistent look. “The decision was made to find a player that we felt was going to fit into our back-end more so than what [Liles] was,” said Carlyle. Like Liles, the 30-year-old Gleason has two years remaining on his contract after this season, carrying a slightly higher cap hit of $4 million annually ($3.875 for Liles). Describing the six-foot, 217-pound Gleason as “very competitive”, Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis said that the new addition would have to earn his ice. “It changes the look of our back end a little bit and I think it gives Randy some more options in terms of pairings,” said Nonis. “We just want him to make a contribution,” Carlyle said of Gleason, whose game strays toward the defensive side of things. “And his contribution wont be expected to be a power-play guy, it wont be expected to be an offensive guy, but a big strong guy that can move the puck.” Gleason, a left-handed shot, figures to be in a fight for opportunity on the Leafs third pair, battling the likes of Paul Ranger and Mark Fraser for a chance alongside 19-year-old Morgan Rielly. 4. Bozaks Hot Streak Though about a month passed in between – he missed 12 games with an oblique injury – Tyler Bozak continues to thrive amid a six-game point streak. Bozak, who scored in regulation and added the shootout winner, has tallied two goals and seven assists in that span. The 27-year-old played nearly 24 minutes against the Red Wings and won 14 of 24 draws. “Hes a reliable player,” said Carlyle. “And if we had a model for the younger players to follow, it would be Tyler Bozak as far as the confident player, not a big guy but he gets in the way, he gets inside, he wins his share of one-on-one battles, very strong in the faceoff circle, and hes got the hockey sense.” 5. Phaneuf Leadership Style Phaneuf was named the 18th Toronto captain at the just-ripe age of 25. Inked to a seven-year extension with the club three and a half years later, Carlyle believes time and experience has allowed Phaneuf to mature into the burdensome duties he assumes for the Leafs. “Dion was put in a situation at a very young age to be the captain of an Original Six team in a very intense market,” said Carlyle, shortly after the Phaneuf extension was officially announced. “I think Dion has softened his approach – not only the way he brings himself to the rink day in, day out – but I think to his teammates, to everybody around him, I think hes become much more accommodating. I think its a sign of maturity. “We all know the captaincy for an NHL team is a letter that you wear proudly, but when your team is not having success it becomes a pretty big item on your chest. People look to you as being the leader and positively or negatively – depending on if it goes well or not going well – you can get ripped apart for it or accolades for it. Those are the things that take place and I think as a young player it takes some maturing, not only just from a hockey player standpoint, but from the expectations that are put on you.” Matched up against Pavel Datsyuk and the Red Wings top line, the 28-year-old played nearly 28 minutes in the Winter Classic, notching his 12th and 13th assists this season. Bonus Point – U.S. Olympic Duties Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk were named to the American Olympic team following Wednesdays game. It will be the second go-around at the games for Kessel – who will also be joined there by his sister Amanda, representing the U.S. women – and the first for the 24-year-old van Riemsdyk. Stats-Pack .950 – Save percentage for Jonathan Bernier over the past six games. 4-0-2 – Record for the Leafs during a six-game point streak. 9 – Points for Tyler Bozak during a six-game point streak. 4 – Consecutive starts for Jonathan Bernier, the first time either he or James Reimer have started four straight all season. 2 – Goals for James van Riemsdyk in the past 12 games. JVR snapped an eight-game drought with 15th this season against the Red Wings. 28:24 – Ice-time for Dion Phaneuf on Wednesday, a game-high. 38 – Face-offs for Jay McClement against the Red Wings, the 30-year-old winning 45 per cent of the time. 1-6-4 – Record for the Leafs in their past 11 road games. Special Teams Capsule PP: 0-4 Season: 22% (6th) PK: 2-2 Season: 78.1% (27th) Quote of the Night “I was born and raised in Sudbury and spent 18 years in Winnipeg, so I know a little bit about cold weather. – Randy Carlyle, following Wednesdays blustery Winter Classic. Brazilian winger Jackson is suspended for the game at Rio Tinto Stadium while Canadian midfielder Jonathan Osorio left practice early Friday, seemingly favouring his right hamstring. Manager Ryan Nelsen said Osorio has been nursing a hamstring strain. During the portion of Fridays training session open to the media, Mark Bloom was playing in place of Jackson on the right flank, with Englands Bradley Orr taking over at fullback behind him. “We dont have a great deal of options at the moment there but weve got a bit of versatility with Bloomie being able to play both positions and now Brad Orrs getting fit,” said Nelsen. Jeremy Hall slotted into central midfield alongside U.S. international Michael Bradley when Osorio exited. Attacking midfielder Dwayne De Rosario remains another option — more likely playing wide left or coming on as an impact substitute — with Canadian international midfielder Issey Nakajima-Farran a newly signed, speedy asset on the flank. But Nelsen has shown faith in the 26-year-old Bloom. Toronto (2-0-0) is off to its best ever start with wins in Seattle and at home against D.C. United. But there are concerns over its depth outside the starting lineup with Nelsen looking to reinforce the 12 through 20 members of the roster. Real Salt Lake (1-0-2) has played two of its first three games on the road, with a home-and-away series with the Los Angeles Galaxy already in the books. While RSL has some injury concerns of its own, the team is a veteran outfit that is used to playing 4,500 feet above sea level. England striker Jerman Defoe says he is no stranger to playing at altitude after his experience at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He saw the bigger challenge in the experience of Real Salt Lake. “Its going to a massive test for us to go there and try to win the game,” he said. “But at the minute, were confidennt.ddddddddddddEveryones playing well, everyones fit. We just look forward to it.” De Rosario, who helped D.C. United beat Real Salt Lake in the U.S. Open Cup final in Sandy, Utah, last season, agreed. “Its a team thats been together for quite some time. A team that has a very distinguished system and they stay true to that. And theyre very good at home.” Now in its 10th MLS season, Real Salt Lake is 74-31-39 at home in regular-season league play. In its eighth MLS campaign, Torontos road record is 15-72-25. But most of Torontos past record for futility can be thrown out, with such marquee reinforcements as Defoe, Bradley, De Rosario and Brazilian striker Gilberto and goalkeeper Julio Cesar. Real Salt Lake has injury concerns up front with Robbie Findley yet to play this season and former TFC player Joao Plata sidelined due to a hamstring strain. Plata, a five-foot-two 135-pound ball of Ecuadorian energy, has been red-hot to start the season with two goals and two assists in three games. Alvaro Saborio and Olmes Garcia are expected to start at forward although Devon Sandoval could return from a foot injury. Defender Aaron Maund, another Toronto FC alumnus, and midfielder Sebastian Velasquez, are also sidelined. Jordan Allen and Kwame Watson-Siriboe are listed as questionable. RSL can still field a veteran lineup, however, led by the likes of midfielder Kyle Beckerman and goalkeeper Nick Rimando, both U.S. internationals. After playing a poor pitch at BMO Field in its home opener, Toronto wont see much of an improvement in the Rio Tinto Stadium surface. “Its in really bad shape,” said Beckerman. NOTES — Toronto is 1-5-0 lifetime in Utah … RSL edged Toronto 3-2 on a stoppage-time goal the last time the clubs met in Utah, on April 28, 2012. Only Doneil Henry, Ashtone Morgan and Quillan Roberts remain with the club from Torontos 18-man roster that day … Nelsen says the cub has talked to Jackson about resisting the temptation to retaliate when provoked on the field. Téma: Jak postupovat / -hitter Ryan Wheeler. LOS ANGELES — Hideki Irabu joined the New York Yankees 14 years ago in a swell of international excitement. The quirky, flamethrowing Japanese right-hander seemed destined to become a pioneering star for American baseballs marquee franchise. Irabu never reached those enormous expectations, and his career spiralled. On Wednesday, the 42-year-old was found dead, an apparent suicide in a home in Rancho Palos Verdes, a wealthy Los Angeles suburb. “He was a world-class pitcher,” said former major league manager Bobby Valentine, who managed Irabu in Japan in 1995. “When Nolan Ryan saw him, he said he had never seen anything like it. There were just some days when he was as good a pitcher as I had ever seen. A fabulous arm.” Los Angeles County coroners official Ed Winter said his office is investigating Irabus death as a suicide, revealing no additional circumstances. An autopsy will be performed Friday or Saturday. Irabu was billed as the Japanese version of Ryan when he arrived in the United States in 1997, a hard-throwing starter with a 98-mph fastball who excelled as a strikeout specialist — an almost unfair addition to the defending World Series champions. After an impressive debut with the Yankees that summer, he was a disappointment to the Yankees and himself during three seasons in the Bronx. Instead, he was forever tagged with a label from late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who called him a “fat … toad” after Irabu failed to cover first base during an exhibition game. Irabu finished 34-35 with a 5.15 earned-run average in his tenure with the Yankees, two years in Montreal and a final season in the Texas bullpen in 2002. He was a member of two Yankees teams that won the World Series, but his only post-season action was a single relief appearance in the 1999 AL championship series when Boston tagged him for 13 hits. Irabu pitched in an American independent league and signed with a Japanese team in recent years while living with his family in Southern California. Neighbours believe Irabu had grown despondent recently because of a split with his wife. Mary Feuerlicht said she was about to go pick up her son on Wednesday morning when a man came running down the driveway from Irabus large two-story home, perched atop a hill with views of the harbour and downtown Los Angeles, pleading with her to call police. Feuerlicht said she was later told by sheriffs deputies and the man who asked her for help that Irabus wife had left him, taking their two young daughters. She hadnt seen Irabus wife and children for two months, but said the family regularly left town for the summer. “When I saw him for the past month or so he seemed kind of down,” she said. “He wasnt kind of perky like Ive seen him before.” Ichiro Sakashita, who identified himself as Irabus friend, arrived late Thursday to place huge bouquets of flowers in front of the former players home. Sakashita said Irabu wanted to become a baseball coach and stay involved with the sport after his retirement, but ultimately decided to spend time with his family. Sakashita said Irabu and his wife had been separated for about a month. “He decided to go to heaven,” he said. “So we must accept that.” Irabus death is the second apparent suicide by a sports figure this week. Police say American Olympic freestyle skier Jeret “Speedy” Peterson shot himself in a Utah canyon on Monday. Valentine said he got the news about Irabu on Thursday when it came across on his mobile phone. “I got a little sick to my stomach, actually,” he said. Irabu was one of several pitchers from Japan who hoped to duplicate Hideo Nomos trailblazing achievements in the major leagues. Irabu also was a curiosity — he taped magnets all over his body when he pitched, hoping they would bring wellness. Although Irabu largely struggled in the majors, he left a lasting legacy. Several big stars, from Ichiro Suzuki to Hideki Matsui, followed Nomo and Irabu from Japan to the United States. “He was one of the pioneers,” Valentine said. “There was a lot riding on his shoulders.” Irabu starred in Japan for nearly a decade before the San Diego Padres purchased his contract from the Chiba Lotte Marines. But Irabu declined to join the Padres, insisting he would only play for the Yankees. The Yankees put together a package and traded for Irabu a few months later and signed him to a four-year, US$12.8 million contract. “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hideki Irabu,” the Yankees said in a statement. “Every player that wears the Pinstripes is forever a part of the Yankees family, and his death is felt throughout our organization.” Irabu pitched just eight games in the minors before making his big league debut at Yankee Stadium on July 10, 1997. The crowd was buzzing even before his first pitch, and fans on two continents watched him. T-shirts with “Typhoon Irabu” were on sale at the concession stands at Yankee Stadium and sushi was sold alongside the hot dogs and beers. With current Yankees manager Joe Girardi as his catcher that night, Irabu retired the first six Detroit batters, striking out four of them and showing a 96 m.p.h. fastball. He fanned nine in 6 2-3 innings and got the win. When he walked off the mound in the seventh inning, Yankees fans gave him a standing ovation. Some even bowed with both hands over their heads, and Irabu came out of the dugout for a curtain call. That, however, was perhaps his finest moment in the majors. “He was a work in progress. It just didnt progress I guess the way he had planned or the way some people planned,” Valentine said. Irabu posted a team-leading 16 saves — the only saves of his major league career — with Texas in 2002. He then returned to Japan for the 2003 season and enjoyed renewed success, earning a win in the all-star game, going 13-8 and helping Hanshin win its first league title in 18 years. Irabu made a comeback in April 2009 in the independent Golden Baseball League, going 5-3 with a 3.58 ERA for the Long Beach Armada. He then returned to Japan and was introduced that August as a member of the Kochi Fighting Dogs, saying, “I have high expectations for myself.” But Irabu also had off-the-field trouble in recent years. In August 2008, he was arrested in Japan for allegedly assaulting a bartender after drinking 20 mugs of beer. Police said he became angered after his credit card was rejected. In May 2010, Irabu was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol in Gardena, another Los Angeles suburb. Police said he was stopped after his car drifted outside of traffic lanes and he nearly collided with a parked car. He posted $5,000 bail but it was not immediately clear whether he was criminally charged. “I think that he was one of his own worst enemies,” Valentine said. Dickerson hit Atlanta catcher Gerald Laird with his backswing and tempers quickly flared, setting off a tense sequence and leading to several ejections Thursday as the Colorado Rockies beat the Braves 10-3. The Rockies led 8-3 in the eighth when Dickerson fouled away a pitch and knocked off Lairds facemask. “It was on a two-strike slider on a backswing that I hit Laird, but it was an accident and I think they know that,” Dickerson said. A stunned Laird was on the ground for several minutes before walking off the field under his own power and being replaced by Evan Gattis. “Hes OK,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “They did all the concussion tests and the doctor cleared him to fly back with us. Im sure hes going to be a little sore. Dickersons backswing got him more on the jaw than on the head. I think we dodged a bullet there.” With his next pitch, Atlanta reliever David Carpenter hit Dickerson in the thigh and was ejected. “I guess Carpenter thought it was on purpose,” Dickerson said. Rockies manager Walt Weiss bolted from the dugout and began yelling at Carpenter, as well as in the general direction of Gonzalez. Weiss was held back by home plate umpire Jordan Baker before being ejected. When he returned to the dugout, Weiss smashed a bat against the wall. “If you think a guy can foul a ball off and then at the same time hit the catcher on the backswing on purpose, you got no clue,” Weiss said. “They made their decision. They made a bad choice.” Carpenter denied throwing at Dickerson. “I tried to run a fastball in on him, it cut a little bit and caught him,” he said. “Dickerson was looking at me and I thought, You just got hit, go to first base, thats all there is to it. Get on with the next batter. I was surprised getting tossed out of the game there, I was preparing for the next hitter.” In the ninth, Rockies reliever Nick Masset hit Gattis in the hip with a pitch. Both Masset and Rockies bench coach Tom Runnells were immediately tossed. Jhoulys Chacin (1-4) pitched seven scoreless innings for his first win of the season, backed by home runs from Charlie Blackmon and Justin Morneau. Chacin, who missed the first month of the season with a right shoulder strainn, struck out five and walked two.dddddddddddd Rookie Tommy La Stella was the only Braves player to get a hit off him, singling in the second and doubling in the fifth. In his toughest inning, with the Rockies ahead 3-0, Chacin issued consecutive one-out walks in the seventh to Chris Johnson and La Stella but got out of the jam by getting Andrelton Simmons to ground into a double play. “I didnt feel that good today,” Chacin said. “I was just trying to make my pitches. I was keeping my pitches down and trying to get ahead and thats pretty much what I did. Any time youre throwing strikes, youre usually going to get good results.” Ervin Santana (5-3) struck out eight in 6 1-3 innings and scattered seven hits but two of them went for home runs. Chacin, who did not receive any run support in three of his outings and totalled just 10 overall in his seven previous starts, helped himself early. He singled in the third ahead of Blackmons home run. It was the 12th home run of the season from Blackmon, all from the leadoff spot, which leads the majors and is the most by a Rockies player in the No. 1 spot in team history. Morneau connected on Santanas first offering in the sixth for his 11th of the season, a two-out drive that sailed over the centre field wall into the Braves bullpen. The Rockies pulled away with a five-run seventh, getting an RBI single from Charlie Culberson and a sacrifice fly from pinch-hitter Ryan Wheeler. Josh Rutledge scored from third on a wild pitch by and Morneau delivered a bases-loaded single to drive in the final two runs of the inning. The Braves scored all their runs in the eighth on Jason Heywards RBI single and B.J. Uptons homer. After Carpenter was ejected, Anthony Varvaro took over and the Rockies added a pair of runs on RBI singles by pinch-hitter Brandon Barnes and Blackmon. NOTES: Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki was given a day off. … Chacin fanned Gerald Laird in the fifth inning for his fourth strikeout of the game and the 500th of his career. Téma: Jak postupovat / l anniversary logo TSNs Aaron Ward explores changing attitudes towards homosexuality in professional sports in the three-part TSN Original feature series ReOrientation, premiering tonight through Friday at 6pm et on SportsCentre. Powered by SportsCentre, ReOrientation is hosted by the NHL on TSN hockey analyst and 13-year NHL veteran and is directed by Gemini Award-winning TSN Feature Producer Michael Farrell. “Ive spent years focusing primarily on breaking down what happens on the ice, so this series is something of a departure for me, but we believe the issues of homophobia and the culture of sport need to be examined and discussed,” said Ward. “We knew the series would reveal some compelling insights, and I know I took away a lot from it personally. I hope viewers will be able to do the same.” ReOrientation takes a sobering look at the pervasive culture of casual homophobia that is common in the locker rooms of professional sports, and reveals the struggles of gay athletes to find acceptance. The series tells the stories of former NFL defensive tackle Esera Tuaolo, who struggled to hide his sexual orientation throughout his nine-year pro football career, and MLS midfielder Robbie Rogers, who in 2013 became the first openly gay man to compete in an elite North American sports league. Ward also conducts interviews with a several NHL players, including Edmonton Oilers captain Andrew Ference, Los Angeles Kings captain and Stanley Cup champion Dustin Brown, Kings goalie Ben Scrivens, as well as league commissioner Gary Bettman, in order to examine changing attitudes in NHL locker rooms, as well as the impact made by the NHLs partnership with social advocacy organization You Can Play. With the ongoing controversy over gay rights in Russia causing global scrutiny ahead of the upcoming Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, ReOrientation charts the progress of professional sports culture as it slowly inches ever closer to equality. ReOrientation will be available for streaming on TSN Digital platforms after each of the series three parts appears on SportsCentre. Once it airs, you can visit TSN.ca/ReOrientation to watch the series in its entirety, alongside a slate of bonus clips with interview subjects. ReOrientation appears in every episode of SportsCentre from Wednesday through Friday, with each part premiering in the 6pm et edition. Téma: Jak postupovat / s the Blues won the opener of a ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals acquired forward Dustin Penner from the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, adding another potential candidate for the top line of Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. The Capitals gave up a fourth-round pick in this years draft for what is essentially a 20-game rental. Penner signed a one-year, $2 million contract last year and is set to become a free agent this summer. The Capitals began the day in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2007. They have struggled in particular on defence, an area they could address before Wednesdays NHL trade deadline. Penner, 31, has played for the Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim over nine NHL seasons. He had 13 goals and 19 assists with the Ducks this season. He would appear to be a natural fit at left wing on the Capitals top line. Coach Adam Oates best options to partner with Ovechkin and Backstrom have been Marcus Johansson, Brooks Laich and Martin Erat, but none of the three has looked suited for the role. “I look forward to coming in,” Penner said, “and hopefully adding something they were looking for.” The deal returns to the Ducks the fourth-round pick they sent to Washington in the trade for Mathieu Perreault in September. The philosophy has been a lesson in frustration for opponents.(SportsNetwork.com) – The Ottawa Senators continue a tough stretch before the Olympic break as they visit the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, one night after visiting the leaders of the Eastern Conference. The Senators lost for the fourth time in six games with Mondays 2-1 overtime setback to the Pittsburgh Penguins, though they were able to earn a point following a disappointing 6-3 loss in Toronto on Saturday. Craig Anderson made a season-high 46 saves, but was unable to stop James Neals shot at the 1:55 mark of overtime. Stephane Da Costa scored for the Senators, who had cruised to a 5-0 win on home ice against the Pens back on Dec. 23 and now sit three points behind Detroit for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. “We knew we had to come out hard after the second half of our game in Toronto, which was not up to our liking,” said Anderson, who surpassed his previous season high of 35 saves last done on Jan. 30. “We needed to come back and have a good game, and we knew they would want to come back hard at us too after we beat them in our building.” Things dont get easier tonight for the Senators as they visit a Blues club that is third overall in the Western Conference with 79 points, three back of the Central Division-leading Chicago Blackhawks. Ottawa will visit the NHL basement-residing Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, but then visit the Atlantic Division-leading Boston Bruins on Saturday. After a heavy workload last night, Robin Lehner is likely to give Anderson a deserved break tonight. Lehner has faceed the Blues just once before, making 30 saves in a 3-2 overtime victory at home on Dec.dddddddddddd 16. The Senators snapped a two-game slide to the Blues and have won six of the last eight meetings. They will visit St. Louis for the first time since a 5-2 loss on Nov. 19, 2010. Defenseman Cody Ceci scored his first NHL goal in the matchup with the Blues and it was the game-winner in overtime. Chris Stewart scored twice for the Blues and Brian Elliott made 29 saves. Derek Roy added two assists for St. Louis and the Ottawa native has 14 goals and 39 points in 45 career games versus the Sens. Elliott made 28 saves as the Blues won the opener of a four-game homestand by besting the Nashville Predators 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday. Vladimir Tarasenko had a game-tying goal in the third period before notching the winner in the tiebreaker. “We needed this game after losing the last game,” said Tarasenko, referring to a 3-1 setback in Carolina the previous night. He also had an assist versus the Predators. Jaden Schwartz and David Backers also lit the lamp for the Blues, who won for the fourth time in its last five games and moved to 20-5-2 at home this season. Jaroslav Halak will start tonight for St. Louis, which is 9-0-0 at home versus the Eastern Conference this season. Halak is 3-5-1 with a 2.76 goals against average in his career versus the Senators. Blues coach Ken Hitchcock is one win shy of 110 with the Blues, which would tie Scotty Bowman for fourth on the franchises all-time list. Téma: Jak postupovat / a better position afte Football – the ultimate team sport, no one player is more important than another. Thats likely the answer youll get if you ask a coach to single out someone whose mere presence in the lineup on any given night can affect his teams fortunes. After all, this is a sport that gave us “next man up” – a term that nicely captures the notion that everyones easily replaced. Thats well and good, but if youre the Edmonton Eskimos the reality is quite a bit different when applied to slotback Adarius Bowman. Now in his seventh CFL campaign, the 6-3, 225lbs Bowman has always tantalized with his sure hands, willingness to impose his will on smaller defensive backs, and battle for the much coveted YAC (yards after catch) yards. In Edmontons opening week win over BC, Bowman led all receivers with nine catches for 105 yards and one touchdown and served notice that Mike Reillys favorite target may not always be Fred Stamps. Bowman was so dominant that Stamps, a four time CFL All-Star with five straight seasons of 1,000+ receiving yards, was largely invisible against the Lions. Thats not necessarily a bad thing for a team that is trying to hit the reset button after a 4-14 season, their worst since the wretched days of the 1960s. Eskimo GM Ed Hervey had a lengthy to do list after 2013. Upgrade (significantly) a porous offensive line, which would in turn limit the amount of time Mike Reilly spent either running for his life, or being helped to his feet by teammates or trainers. A running back who could not only run, but also block would also be nice but having Bowman on the roster more often than not would provide real dividends … and wins. Bowmans ability has never been in doubt, but his inability to stay healthy has limited his production for a player who can put up big numbers AND help the Esks every time hes in the line-up. The numbers are definitive. In just 26 games since 2011, Edmonton is 15-11 with Bowman in the line-up … and 8–21 without. New head coach Chris Jones has already shown that hes not ‘risk averse on either side of the ball and seemingly has full confidence in Bowmans place in the offence. Were all replaceable, especially so in football, but as the Esks have discovered life with Bowman is a whole letter better than life without him. After a season of inconsistency and disappointments, the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants play one game that will make the winner forget the frustrations of the regular season and send the other home for a long rest. Arch rivals facing off for a division title in prime time. Delicious. The Cowboys (8-7) and Giants (8-7) close the regular season Sunday night at Metlife Stadium, the winner getting a first-round home game against either Atlanta or Detroit. Oh, in case of a tie, which hasnt happened all season in the NFL, the Giants capture the division and return to the playoffs for the first time since 2008 based on head-to-head play. “I think everyone knows this is the most important game of the season,” Giants veteran left tackle David Diehl said. “We all know whats at stake. We know what we are playing for. When we started this season our No. 1 goal was to win the division and here we are. Its right in front of us.” The division title has been in front of both teams all season, and neither has grabbed hold of it. The Giants won six of their first eight games, then went on a four-game losing streak to fall a game behind the Cowboys in early December. New York, however, rallied from a 12-point deficit on Dec. 11 to beat Dallas 37-34 and regain first place on a tiebreaker. The momentum lasted a week. New York put in a no-show in losing to Washington on Dec. 18, putting Dallas back in first. Of course, the inconsistency continued last week as the Giants played one of their best games of the season in knocking off and shutting up the local rival Jets 29-14. Meanwhile, Dallas lost to Philadelphia for the second time this season and quarterback Tony Romo bruised his right hand — his passing hand. So who shows up this week with everything on the line? Who knows? “I think these two teams are very comparable team-wise, not only in record but the types of seasons we have had,” said Romo, who plans on playing. “I suspect that talent-wise, we are pretty close so there will be a few plays here or there that will decide this game. We have to be ready to make those plays.” Coincidentally, both teams have been in similar situations in recent years as far as making the playoffs and came up short. The Giants have had late-season collapses the past two years. They lost to Carolina and Minnesota in the final two games of the 09 season to miss the playoffs and they were beaten by Philadelphia and Green Bay in the 14th and 15th games last season — blowing a 21-point fourth-quarter lead against the Eagles — to also go home early. The Cowboys, who last went to the playoffs in the 2009 season, had another win-and-in game on the roaad in 2008 against the Eagles and were blown out 44-6.dddddddddddd “I think its the same thing,” Cowboys Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware said of the parallel to 2008. “Going into this game, this is an opportunity where you can sort of get a birth, an opportunity where you can catapult yourself sort of where you need to be, showcase what we actually have. We havent been the most consistent team this year, but if you get this game and get to the playoffs, thats like rebirth, a rebirth of the team. I think itd be great to just keep going.” Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka said this is an easy game to get ready to play because the picture is so clear, the teams know each other so well after having played only three weeks ago — and having played each other twice a year for decades. “There is only one game we have to focus on and only one game we have to win to get to what our next goal is,” Kiwanuka said. “We have one game and one opportunity to continue on our way to accomplishing our goal, which is winning a national title.” The Giants could get a lift on defence with two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora expected to play for the first time since suffering a high ankle sprain late last month. The Cowboys might be a little fresher because they rested several players after the Giants beat the Jets, with the outcome of their game against the Eagles having no effect on the showdown nature of Sundays game. Giants coach Tom Coughlin or Cowboys coach Jason Garrett will be under the microscope if their team fails to make the playoffs. Coughlin, who hurt his left leg when run into on the sideline by Giants running back D.J. Ware in the fourth quarter last week, might be in a better position after the win over the Jets, a result that had co-owner John Mara signing his praises. Garrett has seen his team blow fourth-quarter leads of at least 12 points three times this season, and might be in a little more trouble if Jerry Jones team misses the playoffs a second straight year. “Its do or die,” Dallas linebacker Bradie James said. “We can all sit here. The coaches talk about the Xs and Os, and my job is just to go out there and . really, its just sheer determination. Coach Garrett talks about will. Its heart, determination. We can get in there and talk about execution and what we plan against this guy. They know us, we know them. Its really going to be whoever outlasts the other. Thats how you break it down. I like to keep it as simple as possible.” This will be the first time the NFC East winner has less than 10 wins since the division was created in 1970. The lone exception was the strike-shortened 1982 season, when teams played nine games. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / arry the load in net, but on the o WASHINGTON — Julien Brouillette wont be joining his five Washington Capitals teammates who are on their way to play Olympic hockey in Sochi. He did, however, help send them off on a winning note. Brouillette broke a scoreless tie with his first NHL goal midway through the third period, Braden Holtby stopped 25 shots and the Washington Capitals beat the New Jersey Devils 3-0 Saturday night in the teams final game before the Olympic break. “I couldnt think of anything. It was so confusing, but great at the same time,” Brouillette said of the goal. “Its going to be hard to sleep tonight.” After the Capitals controlled a faceoff in the New Jersey zone, Brouillette beat Cory Schneider on the short side with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle at the 10:50 mark. The goal follows an assist Brouillette earned in his NHL debut Thursday night. “Im sure hes flying pretty high right now,” Capitals coach Adam Oates said. “Big goal. I havent seen the replay yet, but I know it was close to being tipped and the goalie getting frozen there a little bit there. But you know what, (Nicklas Backstrom) won a draw. Thats what its about.” Martin Erat scored an empty-netter with 1:47 left for his first goal of the season to go along with 21 assists, and Troy Brouwer added another — his 100th career goal — 36 seconds later. Backstrom had two assists. After starting in place of an ill Michael Neuvirth and getting the win Thursday night, Holtby earned his third shutout of the season and 10th in his career in Saturday nights win. “He came in there (Thursday night) and played great and played very solid today,” Oates said. Scoring chances were at a premium for both teams. “Obviously the Devils play that kind of game. They are will to play it every night, and its a frustrating team to play,” Oates said. “They dont give you much. I looked up with nine minutes left in the third period, and I think it was 20 each in shots. Both teams played stingy.” Schneider finished with 23 saves. “We didnt do enough offensively I thought to draw enough penalties to maybe create some power plays late,” New Jersey coach Peter DeBoer said. “We had enough chances to get two or three goals. Weve got to finish something off.” The win moves Washington to within one point of eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 63 points. The Capitals have won three of their last four and snapped a seven-game losing streak (0-6-1) against Metropolitan Division opponents. “Crucial,” Capitals defenceman John Carlson said of the win. “This one a little bit more than the last one, but obviously for our team everythings crucial right now, and (well) carry a little bit of momentum into the break and we know we have our work cut out for us when we get back.” New Jersey is in the thick of the hunt with 61 points, and both teams will have 23 games remaining after the break. “Teams have made late charges and gotten in the playoffs and done some damage in the playoffs. Of course we think there is still time,” Schneider said, “but weve got to put words into action here and make it happen.” The Devils, playing the second of back-to-back games, have lost 5 of 7. Carlson (United States), Alex Ovechkin (Russia), Backstrom and Marcus Johansson (Sweden) and Erat (Czech Republic) are the Capitals headed to Sochi. From New Jersey, Jaromir Jagr, Patrik Elias and Marek Zidlicky will be joining the Czech Republic team, and Damien Brunner will play for Switzerland. The Devils outshot the Capitals 11-6 in the first period as the teams failed to convert two power-play opportunities apiece. Early in the second, New Jerseys Adam Henrique took a centring pass and wristed a shot past Holtby, but it banged off the left post. “I thought we battled hard,” Elias said. “We played most of the game the way we wanted to. They just got the one goal that we didnt.” Later in the period Schneider stopped Karl Alzners wrister from close range and made two follow-up saves on Jay Beagle. NOTES: The Capitals finished 0 for 4 on the power play and the Devils were 0 for 3. … New Jersey D Anton Volchenkov (lower body injury) missed his third straight game. … Washington D Mike Green (concussion) missed his fifth game and C Mikhail Grabovski (left ankle injury) missed his eighth. … New Jersey leads the season series 2-1. He is also set to become a unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. The question is, do the Oilers sign the 27-year-old to a new deal, whether it be short or long term? Or do they trade him in hopes of maximizing his potential value? Its hard to believe that Edmonton will stand still and let Scrivens walk away at seasons end for nothing. At this point, the Spruce Grove, Alta., natives value might be higher than ever. Scrivens leads the NHL in save percentage (.937) and is second in shutouts (four). He is also third in goals-against average (1.93). You can point to the strong numbers and credit the defensive prowess of Los Angeles Kings, who are second in goals against with 116 and with whom Scrivens played 19 of his 23 games so far this season, but that isnt the whole story. In four starts with the Oilers, albeit a small sample size, Scrivens has arguably been better. His save percentage with Edmonton – who by the way have allowed a league-high 190 goals – is .024 higher than with the Kings and hiss goals-against average is .dddddddddddd21 lower. His 2-2 record in Edmonton his indicative of a poor defensive squad, not his individual performances. He continues to earn opportunities to carry the load in net, but on the other hand, is goaltending really at the top of Edmontons wish list right now? With a defence that has trouble defending, does it matter who anchors the crease? Other priorities may take precedence to locking down an unproven starter. Management and ownership are running out of time and fans are running out of patience. Suffering at the bottom of the league for draft picks just wont do. Unless the Oilers choose to sign Scrivens, he remains one of the few expendable and currently valuable assets on the team. Scrivens flashes of brilliance and stretches of success were alive and well in two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and this year with the Kings, but once he came back down to Earth, so did his value. So, is Scrivens the rock in net that is going to lead the rebuilding Oilers into the future? Or is it time for Edmonton to get as much out of the streaky goaltender as possible on the trade market? Téma: Jak postupovat / off a break point b Purely based on the amount of roster turnover the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have experienced since 2013s ugly 3-15 finish, the importance of this weeks rookie camp goes without saying. Kyle Walters and his revamped scouting and player personnel staff of Danny McManus, Ted Goveia, and Drew Morris have worked tirelessly over the offseason to scour the continent for new talent to inject into head coach Mike OSheas lineup. But the Blue and Gold are looking for more than just skill on the field. Both OShea and Walters have reiterated over the winter and spring that a roster with character and leadership qualities throughout is of paramount importance. Call it culture implementation. “We evaluate everything,” said OShea ahead of the three-day camp held at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg. “Its not just what theyre doing out on the field — although that is a major part of it — its how they conduct themselves in a meeting. Just little things. Are they taking notes? Are they respectful to the meal staff? Its an all-encompassing evaluation of these guys, and some guys, some of the little things really catch your eye. Some of the things you wouldnt expect. You see somebody do something like hold the door for a woman as theyre walking around the facility. Those are important things sometimes.” “Its a job interview. Its a great opportunity, and they cant leave anything to chance. They have to show us everything they possibly can show us. If they do that, then whatever the outcome is for them its out of their control as long as theyve given everything they can possibly give.” The Bombers could potentially start three first-year CFLers, and possibly more; at wide receiver, guard or centre on the offensive line, rush end (a new defensive end/linebacker position coined “rover” by new defensive coordinator Gary Etcheverry), and possibly running back and defensive halfback. Some of this hinges on the cream of Kyle Walters 2014 draft crop, lineman Matthias Goossen, who finalized his contract Wednesday just ahead of the first official on-field workout of rookie camp. Ideally (and thats in the strongest sense of the word), Winnipeg would like to have Goossen ready to start at centre this season — alongside fellow Canadians Chris Greaves at left guard, Steve Morley at right guard, and Patrick Neufeld at right tackle — easing the clubs ratio headache drastically with four non-imports holding the offensive front. “As a football player you want to play, but Im not putting any expectations on myself. Im just trying to do my best every day and try to get better, and really contribute to the team in any way possible,” said this years second-overall pick. “My mindset is to try to get better every day, do my best. And if the coaches want me to start, they want me to start, but if they dont want me to start thats totally fine. But Im just going to put my best foot forward and make sure every play Im doing my best. Wozniacki, champion in 2009, held off a strong challenge from Camila Giorgi of Italy 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-2. Makarova, the 2010 champ from Russia, fell to fifth seed Angelique Kerber 6-2, 6-1, with the German avenging her second-round defeat to Makarova last year. Meanwhile, 2011 Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova withdrew with a right hamstring injury but expects to play in Wimbledon next week. Wozniacki and Giorgi were interrupted in the second set when a spectator was removed from the stands on a stretcher as Giorgi led 4-3 on serve. When play resumed, Giorgi failed to win a break point to lead 5-3 and Wozniacki went on to win three straight games to level at one-set all. Wozniacki remained under pressure in the final set, fighting off two break points before breaking to lead 2-1. A double-fault at 4-2 left Wozniacki serving for victory, and in sight of her first title since October. “It feels good,” Wozniacki said of her win. “Game feels in really good shape. Camila played really well. I really had to be focused out there.” Kerber fought off four break points just to hold for 1-1 before taking charge against Makarova, breaking twice to take the set. In the second set, she needed four break points to win the first game before once more dominating Makarova. “It was not as easy as the score said, because there were tough rallies,” Kerber said. “Shes a ggreat player on grass, so I was just focusing on me, trying to be aggressive and take my chances.ddddddddddddI did a good job.” Kvitovas withdrawal gave British wild card Heather Watson a walkover into the semifinals. Watson will meet Madison Keys, who beat fellow American Lauren Davis, a qualifier, 6-2, 6-1. Wozniacki faces Kerber. Mens top seed Richard Gasquet also reached the semis, beating Slovak Martin Klizan 6-3, 6-4. It is his third semifinal of the year and comes after he was sidelined for more than three months with a back injury. The Frenchman, who claimed the title in 2005 and 2006 when the event was held in Nottingham, broke for 3-1. That was enough to earn him the opening set, and in the second set he again fought off a break point before breaking to lead 4-3. Gasquet is playing only his third tournament since March, and admits that although he is progressing he is still not fully fit. “Its always difficult to come back,” Gasquet said. “You are questioning yourself every day on your body. Im not 100 per cent on my game and everything, but Im playing better and better. I served well. I could play with power.” Gasquet will next play Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, who beat Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France 7-6 (5), 6-2. Spanish defending champion Feliciano Lopez will play his quarterfinal against Jeremy Chardy of France on Friday after the match was cancelled overnight due to rain. The winner will play Sam Querrey, also on Friday, after the American beat Frenchman Julien Benneteau 7-6 (5), 6-4. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / -play at 6:00. Ondrej The dust settled, the hangovers were finally a distant memory, but the smiles remained. For Manchester City fans the score line was magnificent, a chance for the fans of the blue side of the city to stick it to their red neighbours and preach their triumph. Nothing could be better than that score line, they thought. Or could it? When it was time for reflection this week it turned out there was. The performance. When they won 6-1 against Manchester United two years ago they had played well, but it was against 10 men with three goals scored very late. This time they didnt play well, they played great. Deep down this is what City fans will keep to themselves, for now: The dawn of a new era where their marquee players stepped up for the new man in charge. Citys 4-1 thumping over rivals Manchester United on Sunday was of significant importance for the fans, but it was even bigger for the clubs new manager. When he was hired, Manuel Pellegrini was simply not a household name in England, despite having a very impressive coaching resume in Europe. Yet, here he was put in charge of one of the biggest clubs in the land where anything other than a Premier League trophy would be a disappointment. Following the game the Chilean was his usual charming self to the press, talking about the performance, but then he slipped in this little nugget mid-sentence: “We must continue improving, trying to play another way, change a lot of things, every day we are improving.” It was a phrase lost on the interviewer, who wanted to talk how great City were but it will not have been lost on the men in charge of the club. Contrast Pellegrinis comments to what Jose Mourinho is currently doing at Chelsea. Suddenly, the world knows about Mourinhos desperate desire to change the teams style, because Mourinho continues to tell the press about it. Mourinho talks about how he didnt like how Chelsea played before and how the clubs Player of the Year last season, Juan Mata, must watch and learn to adapt to his style. Whether Mourinho is right or not is not the point at the moment. The point is the general consensus throughout the world is that this is Joses team and when/if Chelsea succeed it will be because of him… A manager who wont play one minute in the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, at Manchester City, Pellegrini is quietly going about his business making changes that will bring the best out of his players and allow what happens on the pitch, not in the media room, to dictate the clubs identity. This is one of the main reasons why Pellegrini was hired, Roberto Mancini was fired and why Mourinho was never considered for the City job by Chief Executive Officer Ferran Soriano and Director of Football Txiki Begiristain. Sorianos intellect and business acumen combined with Begiristains football intelligence makes them a dynamic duo not to be ignored inside the landscape of English football. To understand their beliefs and attitudes it is important to know the roles they played at Barcelona and, in this case, specifically in the recruitment of a new manager. At the end of the 2006-07 season Barcelona – a year after winning the Champions League and La Liga – lost their domestic league on goal-difference to Real Madrid. Their manager Frank Rijkaard could not lose his job just 12 months after conquering Europe, but deep down Barcas Director of Football, Begiristain, knew he wasnt the man to take them forward. In Graham Hunters excellent book Barca: The Making of the Greatest Team in the World, it is revealed that he began to search for the Dutchmans replacement as early as October 2007, despite the change not taking place until the summer of 2008. In a discussion about considering Jose Mourinho for the Barcelona job, Soriano tells Hunter: “The first board discussion about Mourinho was in December 2007. Retaining Rijkaard had proved a mistake.” A mistake the pair have clearly learned from and one that helped prompt the sacking of Mancini and the hiring of Pellegrini. It was also a decision most fans were against and most media thought was premature. The rest of the chapter offers a fascinating look at Mourinhos attempts to persuade Barcelona to hire him including Begiristains reasons for not hiring him. After reading this it is clear why the former Spanish international had grown frustrated with Mancini at City. Hunter wrote: Begiristain couldnt imagine Mourinho understanding the club didnt want or need outbursts in the media two or three times a week. Whats more, the Basque felt that the Barca he was trying to build valued respect for the opponent, honour in defeat, dignity and other fragile concepts more highly than Mourinho did at that time, or perhaps ever would. Now Mancini is certainly no Mourinho when it comes to loving the sound of his own voice and Barcelonas players are certainly no choir boys to opponents or referees when things go against them, but the point is how highly Begiristain values these traits. This is a brilliant football mind who thinks about a club from top to bottom, who thinks a clubs branding should start with its name and badge, followed by its players, not what was happening at City last season and currently with Mourinho at Chelsea. More from Hunter on Begiristain: He was 100% sure, and remains to this day, that Barca would have trained well, played decent, if pragmatic, football and won trophies under Mourinho. However, he was equally sure that these would become pyrrhic victories compared with what Mourinho would cost the socios, the board, Barcelonas international brand and a host of other intangible concepts that the club saw intrinsic. Begiristain feared that Mourinho felt he was more than the club. Manchester City on the field simply didnt meet their standards last season (with no wins in the Champions League, an FA Cup final loss to Wigan and not coming close to contending for the title) but it was off the field that revealed even more concerns, with constant negative stories in the press surrounding the likes of Mancini, Mario Balotelli and Carlos Tevez. City needed a new identity with a strong spine coming via a professional manager who wouldnt become bigger than the club itself. They didnt need Mourinho and his current antics at Chelsea will bring smiles inside the Manchester City boardroom. Just like that, there is a new distraction in town. City can go quietly about their business on the field and thanks to Pellegrini, Begiristain and Soriano, its now the players, evolving under a new regime, who will make the headlines… and thats the way it should be. Nene practiced Monday for the first time since he was injured Feb. 23 in a win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The coach said he would wait to see how things go on Tuesday before deciding whether Nene plays Wednesday against the Charlotte Bobcats, a pivotal game for playoff seeding in the Eastern Conference. Pierre Michel Lasogga set up Petr Jiraceks 42nd-minute headed opener and scored in the 58th. Hakan Calhanoglu completed the win with an improbable 45-meter free kick in injury time. Slomka took over last Monday from Bert van Marwijk, who was fired after the side lost its previous eight games in all competitions. “The result is a bit flattering,” Slomka said. “But we did well in defence over long periods and the team can be proud of these points. Today was one of 13 (remaining) games and well never stop working.” Hamburg climbed one spot into the relegation playoff place, overtaking Freiburg, which lost 4-2 at home to Augsburg. Sandro Wagner scored late for Hertha Berlin to win 2-1 at Stuttgart, which has lost seven in succession. Hoffenheim came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Borussia Moenchengladbach, and 10-man Nuremberg beat Eintracht Braunschweig 2-1 in a game that featured three missed penalties. Second-place Bayer Leverkusens alarming slump continued in the late game with a 3-1 defeat at Wolfsburg, which stretched its winning run to four games. Bas Dost got the home side off the mark in the 13th, before Leverkusen winger Sidney Sam equalized just before the break. Luiz Gustavo restored Wolfsburgs lead in the 58th and Ricardo Rodriguez made it 3-1 on the rebound in the 73rd after Bernd Leno saved his initial penalty attempt. It was Leverkusens seventh defeat in nine games across all competitions, and means Bayern Munich can stretch its lead to 19 points with a win at Hannover on Sunday. “We have to try something different,” Leverkusen coach Sami Hyypia said. The home side started well in Hamburg, restricting opportunities for Dortmund, which visits Zenit St. Petersburg in the Champions League on Tuesday. Jiracek beat two defenders to meet Lasoggas cross at the far ppost, after the Hamburg striker did well to keep the ball in play.dddddddddddd Calhanoglu won the ball from Nuri Sahin and Firat Arslan sent Lasogga through to finish with aplomb past Roman Weidenfeller. Rene Adler made a host of good saves as Hamburg kept a clean sheet for the first time after 14 games. His side conceded at least three in each of its previous seven games including the 5-0 German Cup defeat to Bayern Munich. “Its so nice to be rewarded like this at the end of the week,” said Adler, who was criticized after last weeks 4-2 defeat to Braunschweig. Calhanoglu completed a memorable afternoon when he belted his free kick from near the centre circle over Weidenfeller. The Dortmund goalkeeper retreated but was unable to keep the ball out as it dipped in. Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp was philosophical about his sides sixth league defeat. “Theres that old saying that a good horse will only jump as high as it needs to. I hate that saying. I reckon a horse should jump as high as it can,” Klopp said. “Today we looked to see how high we needed to jump. And as we realized that it wasnt so high, we were behind.” Freiburg was left fuming after Christian Guenter was booked for diving in the 86th when it looked like he should have been awarded a penalty. Augsburg was leading 3-2 at the time. The home sides protests were ignored and Andre Hahn completed the scoring in injury time, leaving Freiburg one point below Hamburg. Hertha defender Levan Kobiashvili scored in the fifth in Stuttgart, making the 36-year-old the clubs oldest goal-scorer in the Bundesliga, only for Arthur Boka to equalize with a rocket from outside the penalty area before the break. Wagner scored with a header in the 87th, and was sent off in injury time with two yellow cards in as many minutes. “Were incredibly disappointed,” Stuttgart coach Thomas Schneider said. “The team showed it was alive. They threw everything into it.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ngelique Kerber 4-6, 6-3, 6 ATLANTA — With so many teammates hurting, Julio Jones had to play an even bigger role for the Atlanta Falcons. He was up to the task. Jones matched the best game of his career with 182 yards receiving, including an 81-yard touchdown catch, and the Atlanta Falcons held on for their first win of the season, 31-24 over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. “I know the other guys on the field are counting on me to make those plays when the ball comes my way,” Jones said. Matt Ryan threw for 374 yards and two scores despite taking quite a beating behind the Falcons shaky offence line. Jason Snelling clinched it for the Falcons (1-1) with an 11-yard touchdown run with 6:12 remaining, Atlantas longest play of the day on the ground. There were plenty of flaws in the Falcons performance — hardly any running game, a lack of protection for Ryan, not much pressure on Rams quarterback Sam Bradford — but theyll take it considering all the players who went down. Five starters were done by halftime: running back Steven Jackson (thigh), linebacker Sean Weatherspoon (foot), defensive end Kroy Biermann (right ankle), cornerback Asante Samuel (thigh) and fullback Bradie Ewing (shoulder). “While you dont want see anybody go down, nobody panicked, nobody blinked,” said Ryan, who was sacked twice and hit eight times after throwing. “We just stayed the course.” The Rams (1-1) fell behind 21-0 when Osi Umenyiora returned an interception 68 yards for a touchdown. Atlanta led 24-3 at halftime before St. Louis fought back on a pair of short touchdown passes by Bradford, who finished with 352 yards and three TDs. Jones matched the best performance of his career; he also put up 182 yards receiving in last seasons NFC championship game. “Julio and Matt seemed to be in sync,” coach Mike Smith said. “They were seeing the defence the same way.” Atlanta turned in the drive it needed to clinch it, throwing on eight straight plays before Snellings TD run. St. Louis scored again with 2:09 left when Bradford connected with Tavon Austin for their second scoring play of the game. But the Falcons managed to run out the clock. “We ran with them all day,” Rams defensive end Robert Quinn said. “We just needed to make a few players earlier in the game.” The Falcons escaped with a victory they absolutely had to have if they wanted to show they are a legitimate Super Bowl contender, avoiding their first losing streak since 2009. They have now won 13 straight coming off a loss. Jackson, facing the team he played with the last nine years, capped Atlantas opening drive with an 8-yard touchdown catch, but the celebration was short-lived. Apparently injured when he stretched for the goal line, he walked slowly to the locker room and didnt return. Then it was Jones beating Janoris Jenkins in man-to-man coverage, breaking free down the middle for the longest reception of his career to make it 14-0. Umenyiora extended the lead when he picked off a deflected pass and showed surprising speed in front of the Rams bench. He then staggered to the sideline, smiling, and grabbed an oxygen mask. The Rams couldve folded. Instead, they really began teeing off on Ryan in the second half. While the Atlanta offence bogged down, Austin hauled in a 6-yard scoring pass late in the third, and Austin Pettis 3-yard TD catch made it 24-17 with just under 12 minutes remaining. Atlanta turned to Jones to clinch it. He hauled in a short pass and broke free on a 22-yard play. Then, on third-and-3 at the Rams 40, Ryan rolled to his left away from pressure and lobbed a pass that Jones leaped up to grab for an 18-yard gain. Three players later, Snelling ran it in. “We never believe were out of the game until the clock says zero,” Quinn said. “We just fell a play or two short.” NOTES: The Falcons had 1 yard rushing in the first half and finished with 36 yards on 16 carries. … Rams WR Chris Givens had five catches for 105 yards. … Falcons WR Roddy White played but was still slowed by a high ankle sprain. He had three catches for 21 yards. … Atlanta P Matt Bosher made a huge play at the end of the third quarter, leaping up to grab a high snap in his own end zone. He then got off a wobbly punt that rolled for 63 yards. . Louis Blues remain at the top spot of the TSN. Raonic, the No. 8 seed from Thornhill, Ont., had 18 aces in the match. He needed one hour 39 minutes to complete the victory. Also Tuesday, Novak Djokovic marked his return from a right wrist injury by beating Czech veteran Radek Stepanek 6-3, 7-5, while Italian hope Andreas Seppi complained about a decisive time violation in a loss to Tommy Haas. With both new coach Boris Becker and longtime adviser Marian Vajda on hand, Djokovic showed no signs of pain after withdrawing from last weeks Madrid Open. The second-ranked Serbs only trouble came as he attempted to close the match out, dropping his serve twice late in the second set before eventually finishing it off. “I expected to be a little bit rusty on the court, the conditions didnt help, but generally it was a good win,” Djokovic said, alluding to the swirling wind inside the Foro Italico stadium. “Im happy with that and hope to elevate my performance in the next one.” Djokovic, a two-time Rome champion, committed just nine unforced errors to Stepaneks 27. It was a sharp contrast from Djokovics last match, when he lost to Roger Federer in the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals last month, when he had his wrist heavily strapped and was unable to serve or return at his usual level. Also advancing was Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka, who routed Spanish qualifier Pere Riba 6-0, 6-3. In first-round action, the 15th-seeded Haas overcame Seppi 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. The 34th-ranked Seppi couldnt believe it when he received his second time violation while serving at 3-3, 30-40 in the third set, folllowing his first serve.dddddddddddd. The second violation results in a serve being taken away, which meant a double fault for Seppi and he then went on to lose the final three games. “Ive never received a time violation in my life,” he said. “I was just waiting because the fans were making a bit of noise. … Its scandalous. … And the first one was for nothing, too. (Haas) hit a drop shot and I had to walk back to get the balls. It was really uncalled for.” In first-round womens play, Italian wild-card entry Camila Giorgi upset ninth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 7-6 (2) in a match delayed briefly due to rain; 10th-seeded Sara Errani of Italy eliminated Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa 7-5, 6-3; and 13th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro eased past Mona Barthel 6-2, 6-2. There was also an upset in the second round, as Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic rallied past seventh-seeded Angelique Kerber 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The 22-year-old Giorgi, who reached the round of 16 at the U.S. Open last year as a qualifier, showed off her attacking game, stepping into the court to whip winners into the corners at every opportunity. Making her Rome main-draw debut, Giorgi had loud support on the picturesque Pietrangeli court, which is lined with neo-classical statues. “The pressure is positive. Its great that the fans come to see you,” Giorgi said. “Playing at home happens only once per year.” This tournament is the last key clay-court warmup before the French Open, which starts in two weeks. TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays placed outfielder Colby Rasmus on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, recalled outfielder Anthony Gose from triple-A Buffalo and sent right-hander Dustin McGowan back to the bullpen. Rasmus, who is dealing with tightness in his right hamstring, is batting .222 with nine homers and 19 RBIs in 37 games this season. The move was retroactive to Tuesday, the Blue Jays said in a release. McGowan was a starter earlier in his career before injuries kept him off the mound for extended periods of time. He rebounded last year with a decent season out of the bullpen and the team gave him another shot as a starter. The right-hander was 2-2 with a 5.08 earned-run average over eight starts this season. “I think it makes us stronger,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of the move in a pre-game availability. "Ive always thought that but Im also on board with the other thing. In talking to him, hes feeling healthy and all that, but the last couple of starts the recovery time he hasnt felt as good. He was scheduled to start Tuesday in Boston. Gibbons mentioned right-handers Marcus Stroman and Todd Redmond as possibilities from the current 25-man roster. Another possibility is right-hander Liam Hendriks, who is 5-0 with a 1.51 ERA for the Bisons. Gose has appeared in three games for Toronto this season. Téma: Jak postupovat / ble comeback Sunday as C MEMPHIS, Tenn. . — For one night, Nick Calathes provided a big reason to believe the Memphis Grizzlies might be able to withstand the loss of Mike Conley on a short-term basis. Calathes, starting in place of the injured Conley, scored a career-high 22 points and the surging Grizzlies defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 99-90 on Saturday. “Mike must have touched (Calathes) hand or given him a good-luck touch because that man was shooting the lights out of that ball,” said Memphis reserve forward James Johnson, who had 14 points. “For him to come in and do that was huge for us. We needed that.” Zach Randolph had 23 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis, which has won a season-best six straight and 11 of 12 overall. Marc Gasol scored 19. Brandon Knight led Milwaukee with 23 points, including 18 in the second half. He also had seven assists and six rebounds. Ersan Ilyasova finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Bucks, who have lost six in a row. Khris Middleton scored 12 points, while Larry Sanders and Caron Butler finished with 10 each. Milwaukee had a lead for most of the first three quarters but it slipped away in the fourth. “In the fourth quarter, we got down by a margin of five,” Knight said. “We were able to keep it there for a little bit, and then it went to 10. From that point, it was tough to really get in a rhythm.” The Grizzlies were playing their first game without Conley, the starting point guard who sprained his ankle in Friday nights win at Minnesota. The team announced before the game that Conley will miss at least a week. Even Conley recognized the teams effort, tweeting praise to Calathes after the game with the hashtag “WinWithoutMike.” Memphis shot 56 per cent in the second half and outscored the Bucks 56-41. Calathes made all three of his shots from outside the arc. “We played 2 1/2 good quarters, we just didnt finish it,” Bucks coach Larry Drew said, later adding: “We had the energy in the first half, but in the second half we didnt, particularly in the third quarter.” Calathes not only set career highs for points and minutes (40), he shot 8 of 12 in the game and 4 for 5 from 3-point range without committing a turnover. His previous high was 11 points against Houston on Jan. 25. Several of his 3-point attempts in this one were uncontested. “I think they were giving up my shot, and I made them pay for it,” Calathes said. But he also recognized the importance of not turning the ball over while trying to get the Grizzlies offence running through the frontline tandem of Gasol and Randolph. “I think that was the biggest stat of the night for me, not turning the ball over,” Calathes said. “I came into the game telling myself, Dont make a crazy play. Dont try to go overboard.” Memphis struggled early but outscored the Bucks 46-32 in the paint and outrebounded Milwaukee 48-38. The Grizzlies also went 6 of 10 beyond the arc, their best percentage in a game this season. The Bucks held a 13-point lead in the first half. Knight scored nine in the third, but Memphis began to make a push at the end of the period — even adding a point after it was over when officials reviewed a shot by Mike Miller and ruled it a 3. That left Milwaukee with a 69-67 lead entering the fourth. Memphis finally erased the deficit early in the final quarter, opening with a 16-4 rally to build its first double-digit lead of the night. Calathes sparked the burst with a trio of 3-pointers, the third one coming with 3:14 left for a 90-78 lead that Memphis never relinquished. “It is hard to play 41 minutes,” Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger said of Calathes. “He has the ball in his hands a lot. Wow, what a great performance.” NOTES: Conley missed two previous games this season with a bruised left thigh. … Bucks C Zaza Pachulia returned after missing 28 games with a broken right foot. … The Grizzlies used their 14th starting lineup of the season. Téma: Jak postupovat / trick, making a li SAN DIEGO — Tim Lincecum doesnt pitch like the two-time Cy Young award winner from five years ago. . Hes just beginning to get similar results. The right-hander struggled after winning the honour in 2008 and 2009, but a retooling of his game has begun to pay off and has the San Francisco Giants thinking about the Lincecum of old. After throwing a no-hitter against San Diego 11 days ago, Lincecum took a shutout into the seventh inning Sunday to lead the Giants to a 5-3 win over the Padres. Lincecum (8-5) extended his scoreless streak to 23 1-3 innings before Brooks Conrad hit a solo homer in the seventh to knock him out of the game. The streak started with his second career no-hitter against San Diego on June 25. Lincecum followed that with eight scoreless innings in a 5-0 win over St. Louis on Tuesday. Although this is not the overpowering Lincecum who won the Cy Young in consecutive years, the results are impressive. “Im not going to overpower teams with my stuff,” Lincecum said. “Im just going to have to mix my pitches and locations. Im doing a good job of that. Im not missing in big spots with pitches.” He allowed one run on three hits, walked four and struck out six. Lincecum has won all three starts this season against San Diego and improved his mark against the Padres to 16-6 in 29 career starts. Lincecum threw his first no-hitter at San Diego on July 13, 2013. “Timmys just been on a good roll,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “How poised hes been, how easy his delivery has been.” The Giants have been down this road before with Lincecum since he began struggling after his last Cy Young season and lacked the consistency that had marked the early part of his career. Bochy thinks this recent stretch may last. “Hes reinvented himself,” Bochy said. “I think he has a better idea of what he wants to do as far as pitching. Hes become more of a pitcher. It was pure stuff early on in his career. Hes gotten more cerebral with the pitching side of it.” Lincecum also believes he may be able to sustain his most recent success as compared to other stretches when it didnt last. “Its just a feeling I have right now,” he said. “I look for consistency and this is about as consistent as I have been in the last few years. Hopefully, this is the start of something good.” The Giants, who had dropped 18 of 22 games after they lost the opener Friday, won two straight to win only their second series in nearly a month. Brandon Belt drove in two runs for San Francisco and Hunter Pence had three hits, extending his season-best hitting streak to 11 games, and scored three runs. Rookie Joe Panik and Michael Morse each had an RBI. Three relievers combined with Lincecum on a four-hitter. Santiago Casilla pitched the ninth for his third save in six chances. The Padres did not get their first hit off Lincecum until there were two outs in the fourth. Yasmani Grandal hit a two-run homer, his seventh, off former closer Sergio Romo in the eighth inning to cut the Giants lead to 5-3. Rookie Jessie Hahn (4-2) lost his four-start winning streak, allowing three runs on five hits over seven innings in his sixth major league start. The left-hander struck out five and walked two. “In the early innings, they were sitting on my curveball, so I had to make some adjustments,” Hahn said. Hahn retired 11 straight batters after he allowed Morses RBI single to fall behind 3-0 in the third. “The second half of his outing was outstanding,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “I was really impressed with how Jesse hung in there.” Belt singled in a run in the first and had a sacrifice fly in San Franciscos two-run eighth. NOTES: Lincecums career best for scoreless innings is 29 in 2009. … Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval, who left Saturday nights game with a left elbow bruise after he was hit while swinging at a pitch, did not play. … The Giants 5-3 win Saturday night in 10 innings was just the clubs third victory since moving to San Francisco in 1958 in which the team won a game with a game-tying homer in the ninth inning and a game-winning home run in the 10th, according to information provided to the Giants by the Elias Sports Bureau. … Giants RHP Ryan Vogelsong (5-5, 3.86 ERA) is scheduled to face As RHP Jesse Chavez (6-5, 3.23) in the opener of a three-game series at Oakland on Monday. … The Padres travel to Colorado with RHP Ian Kennedy (6-9, 3.87) going against Rockies LHP Tyler Matzek (1-2, 4.25) in the opener of a three-game set. But the victory was tarnished by Neymars exit in the 22nd minute after the Brazil striker turned his right ankle while attempting to extend his dribble to the goal-line, falling under his own weight and going over his limb. Barcelona, which will play Levante in the last eight, said Neymar tore tendons in the ankle. Neymar, who was replaced by Alexis Sanchez, was in obvious pain after going down without any contact, appearing to catch his boot in the grass and go over it. “Thankfully it wasnt as bad as it could have been,” coach Gerardo Martino said. “Hell be sidelined for a time but everyone should stay cool, hes alright. I dont think it will sideline him too long.” After losing 4-0 at Barcelona, the hosts nearly gained some early momentum at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez only for Barcelona goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto to deny Pablo Sarabia moments before Neymars injury. But Getafe never stood a chance of getting back into the series after that as Messi ensured there would be no repeat of the 2006-07 season when Barcelona lost 4-0 here in the return leg to miss out on the final. Cesc Fabregas played to Cristian Telloos run into the left side of the area and Messi was well-placed to redirect the Barcelona wingers cross beyond goalkeeper Jordi Codina for the 44th-minute opener. . The Argentina forward showed he hadnt lost any of his pace after missing two months as he blew past four defenders in the 63rd and into the area around Codina before slotting home from a tight angle for 2-0. “It was only a question of time until Messi played 90 minutes,” Martino said. “Hes been taking it little-by-little and hes feeling better. He just needed some playing time after being out 60 days.” Codina did well to deny Messi a hat trick, making a lightning quick reaction save with his leg to deny Messi from inside the area just before the end. Midfielder Xavi Hernandez replaced Fabregas in the 70th to make his 700th appearance for Barcelona. Earlier, Real Sociedad made up for an embarrassing league loss to Villarreal by winning at its rival 1-0 to also reach the quarterfinals. Villarreal routed Sociedad 5-1 at its El Madrigal Stadium on Monday, but three days later the Basques secured passage into the last eight following a scoreless first leg. Javi Ros put Real in command with a valuable away goal in the 32nd minute, stabbing home a loose ball from inside the box after goalkeeper Juan Carlos Sanchez made the initial save on Xabi Prieto. Real moves on to face third-tier Racing Santander in the knockout competition. Also, defending champion Atletico Madrid plays Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid faces Espanyol in the quarterfinals, with first legs kicking off next week. Whol… Jerseys USA . — The Chiefs released cornerback Brandon Flowers on Friday, shortly after finishing up three weeks of voluntary workouts in which the former starter was conspicuously absent. Kansas City has been bumping up against the salary cap, so the move to part ways with Flowers was largely expected. He was due to make $5.25 million this season, and the former starter carried a salary cap number of $10.5 million next season. The decision to release Flowers will save the Chiefs about $7.25 million this season and $7.5 million next season. That money could be used to help the Chiefs sign quarterback Alex Smith and linebacker Justin Houston to contract extensions. Both of them are in the final year of their contracts. Top-seeded Li defeated Germanys Annika Beck 6-1, 6-3, while fifth-seeded Peng advanced in a walkover when American Vania King withdrew with a right thigh injury. “Itll be a tough match tomorrow,” Li said. “Were quite familiar with each other and have improved a lot over the last year. But no matter what, Im quite looking forward to the final.” Li was leading 6-1, 5-0 Friday when Beck came back to reel off three straight games, but the former French Open champion regrouped to close out the match. King said she began feeling pain in her leg during her win over second-seeded Sara Errani in the second round and pulled out to rest before the Australian Open, which begins on Jan. 13. “It was a really difficult decision for me to pull out because I hate losing and not competing,” King said. “But I just have to look out for my health.” Saturdays final will be just the second in WTA history featuring two Chinese players. Téma: Jak postupovat / bench after going hard PHILADELPHIA — The 76ers have fumbled their way toward the wrong kind of NBA history. . Amare Stoudemire had 22 points and 10 rebounds, Carmelo Anthony scored 21 and the New York Knicks won their eighth straight game, 93-92 over Philadelphia on Friday night, sending the Sixers to their 23rd straight loss. The Sixers have matched the Vancouver Grizzlies (1995-96), Denver Nuggets (1997-98) and Charlotte Bobcats (2011-12) for the second-longest single-season losing streak in NBA history. The Cleveland Cavaliers set the record of 26 consecutive losses in the 2010-11 season. The Sixers (15-54) would have to pull off an upset to avoid tying the record. Up next, three straight road games at Chicago, San Antonio and Houston. If the Sixers lose all three, the potential record 27th loss would come March 29 vs. Detroit. With 8.6 seconds left and the Sixers down 92-90, Sixers guard James Anderson mishandled the ball as he attempted to pass it to Thaddeus Young, and it bounced out of bounds. After Anthony hit 1 of 2 free throws, Michael Carter-Williams missed the tying 3-point attempt, and a putback at the buzzer made no difference in ending the streak. Tyson Chandler had 17 points for the Knicks, who are suddenly charging for a playoff spot. Carter-Williams, one of the few bright spots this season, led Philly with 22 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists. Young hit a 3-pointer with 32.5 seconds left, Philadelphias 40th attempt, that pulled the Sixers to 92-90 with 32.5 seconds left. He scored 21 points and the Sixers set a team mark with 41 3-point attempts. They made only 10. The Knicks entered the day only four games back of Atlanta for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Their recent surge started right around the time news broke that New York wanted to hire Phil Jackson as team president. Jackson was officially introduced on Tuesday, and the Knicks are starting to give him reason to believe he might be in charge of a playoff contender. The Knicks never dominated, but did enough to hold off a Sixers team freefalling toward one of the worst seasons in NBA history. New York shook off 33 per cent shooting in the first half to hit a slew of big 3s and throw down one-handed jams that turned back Philadelphia at every run. After the Knicks started 1 for 16 from 3-point range, J.R. Smith hit a pair early in the third that gave them some needed breathing room. And in the fourth, Stoudemires dunk pushed the lead to 11 and Tim Hardaway Jr., followed with one of his own that brought a huge pro-Knicks crowd to their feet. For a team that ranked 29th in attendance, the blue-and-orange fans that colored the arena gave the fourth quarter a rare, lively atmosphere. The losses have piled up for the Sixers — and now, an injury. Shooting guard Tony Wroten, their third-leading scorer, left the game in the fourth with a sprained right ankle. They could have used his scoring punch in the final minute. Instead, the put the ball in Andersons hands, and he put it out of reach of an overdue win. The Sixers lost their 18th straight home game since beating Charlotte on Jan. 15. Given a chance to do the same at Madison Square Garden, the St. Louis Blues blue-liner made the most of his opportunity. Shattenkirk fired in the tiebreaking power-play goal early in the third period, and the Blues got the best of New York again in a 2-1 victory Thursday night. “There were a lot of emotions going through my body, but after the first couple of shifts it just felt like a hockey game again,” Shattenkirk said. “Once the goal happened, even more of a relief. I was happy and you could hear some people cheering.” Shattenkirk had his own rooting section. He secured 20 tickets himself, but estimated that 60 or 70 people he knows got tickets on their own to watch him play. He could hear them when he one-timed a pass from Alex Pietrangelo through a screen and past goalie Henrik Lundqvist — a la Leetch — at 3:09 for his eighth goal of the season. “There are a lot of things that I watched in him growing up, and he was a very special player. I try to emulate him as best as I can,” Shattenkirk said. “Those were areas that he always shined in.” Alexander Steen also had a goal for the Blues before leaving late in the second period with a lower-body injury. David Backes had two assists, and Jaroslav Halak made 34 saves in beating Lundqvist in a matchup of Olympic goalies. New Yorks Rick Nash scored his sixth goal in four games — netting at least one in each — but Shattenkirk took advantage of Nashs slashing penalty, scoring 9 seconds into the power play. Lundqvist made 23 saves in his return from a one-game absence caused by the flu. He allowed fewer than three goals for the seventh straight game, but still couldnt find a way to stop the Blues — the only NHL team he has never beaten (0-4). “I was moving the way I wanted to,” Lundqvist said. “I am happy with the way I played, but its still very disappointing to not come out of here with at least one point.” St. Louis, which killed all three Rangers power plays, swept the two-game season series and has won seven of the past eight meetings. The Blues, beaten 7-1 at New Jersey on Tuesday, have earrned points in eight straight visits to Madison Square Garden. . This was their first since Nov. 7, 2010. “Its shameful that we havent been here more often,” Backes said. “You see the crowd, youre in the city for a day or two, you feel that hype, and you know what playing the New York Rangers brings. I think it brought the best out of us.” The Rangers got even late in the second on Nashs team-leading 17th goal. Derek Stepan sent a pass from behind the net to Nash, who stepped into a slap shot from the dot in the left circle and ripped a drive past Halak with 1:43 left. New York pressured the Blues for the remainder of the period and drew its second power play in the closing seconds. “We had a couple good looks,” Rangers captain Ryan Callahan said, “a couple Grade-A chances there right in front. We just didnt get one past them there.” The Rangers outshot the Blues 28-18 through 40 minutes. “Theyre a team that if we wouldve taken off the gas for 60 seconds, it couldve been 3-2 the other way in a heartbeat,” Backes said. Steen gave the Blues a 1-0 lead with his 26th goal. A pass from Jaden Schwartz hit Steens right skate in front of the crease, caromed off Lundqvists stick and skate and trickled in at 8:38. The goal was briefly reviewed by video replay, and it was determined that the puck wasnt kicked into the net. It was the fifth straight goal allowed by the Rangers since they had a 3-1 lead over the Islanders in the second period on Tuesday in a 5-3 loss. A late power-play goal was the winner in that one, too. Steen struggled to get to the bench after going hard into the boards in the second, but he was back soon after on the power play. He skated off for good with 2:57 left in the period. Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said Steen is day to day. NOTES: Nash has 21 goals and 40 points in 50 games versus the Blues. … Steen has 14 career points against the Rangers and 12 in the past seven games — including six goals. … Schwartz played in his 100th NHL game. … Blues C Maxim Lapierre was activated from the injured list after missing five games due to a lower body injury. … Newly acquired D Kevin Klein made his Rangers debut. … St. Louis C Derek Roy was a healthy scratch. Téma: Jak postupovat / ter, he was hugging his mo Nashville, TN – The Nashville Predators announced Monday the signing of pending unrestricted free agent goaltender Carter Hutton to a two-year contract worth $1. .45 million. The 28-year-old will make $700,000 for the upcoming season and $750,000 in 2015-16. Pressed into service due to starter Pekka Rinnes hip issues, Hutton posted a 20-11-4 record, 2.62 goals-against average and one shutout in his first full season of NHL action in 2013-14. The undrafted free agent played collegiately for UMass-Lowell from 2006-10 and departed as the programs all-time leader in GAA (2.33), save percentage (.913) and shutouts (10). . Ecclestone dismissed on Wednesday any clash between the series, after the top executive at Texas Motor Speedway called F1 “arrogant” for scheduling the United States Grand Prix in Austin on the same weekend that his track hosts NASCAR in Fort Worth. . A few changes have been made this year, as RDS will no longer be producing it. Instead, the Canadiens have hired their own team of creative masterminds to produce the reality series. ARLINGTON, Texas — No, this was not an instant replay, though it certainly is turning into a highlight reel Kentucky and Aaron Harrison could get used to watching over and over again. Harrison took a pass from his twin brother, Andrew, spotted up from NBA range and watched the ball rattle in for the lead with 5.7 seconds left to lift the Wildcats to a 74-73 victory Saturday night over Wisconsin in the Final Four. “You cant be scared to miss, and you want to be that guy that wants to take the big shots,” Aaron Harrison said. Its the third straight game the Kentucky freshman has made a 3 for the go-ahead points in this magical ride for the Wildcats (29-10), and the second straight time the pass has come from his brother for a shot from the left centre of the arc. Traevon Jackson had a last-second shot to try to beat the Wildcats, but the desperation jumper rimmed out and once again Harrison found himself at the bottom of a dog pile at centre court. Eighth-seeded Kentucky will play seventh-seeded UConn in the final Monday — the highest seed total to play for the title since they started putting numbers by the names back in 1979. “I know how good they are, but I dont know how they play,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said of his next opponent. Wisconsin (30-8) set a Final Four record by going 95 per cent from the free-throw line — 19 for 20. But it was that one miss that cost the Badgers. Jackson got Andrew Harrison to jump into him while attempting a 3-pointer with 16.4 seconds left. His first free throw rimmed out, and — after hhe made the next two — Wisconsin had a 73-71 lead and Kentucky had the ball. . Any doubt where it was going? Against Louisville in the regional semifinal, Aaron Harrison was open in the corner when Julius Randle found him. He hit the go-ahead 3 with 39.1 seconds left on the way to a 74-69 win. Two nights later, there were 2.3 seconds on the clock and Harrison was a few steps over to the left when he took the pass from his brother. The ball clanged in and he trotted backward and pumped his hands in the air. A few minutes later, he was hugging his mom in the stands. “It never comes down to just one possession,” Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan said. “It was right there for them, its just the other team had one possession better.” James Young led Kentucky with 17 points and Randle finished with 16, but only five boards to snap his string of three straight double-doubles. But Kentucky had an answer for Wisconsins do-everything 7-footer, Frank Kaminsky, who was held to eight points and five rebounds. Ben Brust and Sam Dekker had 15 each for the Badgers, who came up a game short of their first appearance in the final since 1941. Instead, its Kentucky going for its ninth national title and second in three years, with an almost completely rebuilt roster from 2012. Its the way Calipari does it, like it or not. His star during this run: Aaron Harrison, who has first-round potential, though it wont be his final numbers in this game — eight points, three rebounds — that will impress the scouts as much as his final shot. Téma: Jak postupovat / yed valiantly. They fought TORONTO – Its been almost a full year since Raptors forward Landry Fields underwent surgery to correct a debilitating and somewhat enigmatic injury to his right elbow; an injury that nearly turned him against the game that he loves. . For Fields, the road to recovery has been a long and arduous journey, one that continues to this day as the 25-year-old prepares for his fourth NBA season and second with the Raptors. This summer was a time of reflection, a time of change in his life, both personally and professionally. Returning to play in 46 games following ulnar nerve surgery early last season, Fields battled through the aftermath of his injury, a hitch in his shot and the resulting toll it took on his confidence. He had targeted the offseason as a time of reconciliation, a time to reconstruct the shooting mechanics that had been betraying him. It turned out to be more trying than he could have anticipated. “There was a point where I was so frustrated, my dark days basketball-wise,” Fields told TSN.ca in an exclusive conversation Tuesday evening. “Even in the summer there was a lot of ups and downs,” he admitted. “Its just a continual process really. In my mind I thought I [would have] surgery and boom, Id be back to normal, but clearly [that] isnt the case.” First and foremost, as Fields pointed out, the nerve still needed to heal and strengthen. Trying to avoid that temptation to put the cart ahead of the horse was his biggest challenge, as he juggled on-court work with the natural healing process that had to occur first. In an attempt to work around the injury and play through it last year, Fields developed some bad habits including what he called a “weird motion” in his shot. He recalled the “down periods” this summer, when he would be in the gym working tirelessly to hone in on his mechanics as he would lose the strength in his shooting elbow. The injury has forced Fields to reinvent his shot and his game while calling a few unexpected audibles along the way. He even tried to do something that is mostly unheard of at the NBA level, change shooting hands mid-career. “At that point I was like, its early in the summertime what if I just start working with my left [hand for] a couple months and see how far I can go,” he said of the short-lived experiment. “It didnt really work as I excepted it. Im right handed, so I got off of that and stayed faithful to the process and what the doctors were saying.” Fields was a 39 per cent three-point shooter as a rookie with the Knicks back in 2010-11, a year in which he attempted 219 triples. Last year he made just two of 14 attempts from long range. “In my mind I just wasnt playing with a full deck of cards,” Fields said of his first season in Toronto. “I want[ed] to shoot it but I understood that my strength and my sensation and the sensory skills in my right hand arent nearly what they need to be so I cant really feel when Im going up for a shot.” “Its almost like Im shooting a ghost ball or something,” he joked. “So when thats going on, yeah youre confidence kind of dwindles. Youre like, I cant shoot right now, not because I dont want to but I literally cant. Its physical.” Still not 100 per cent, Fields says he can “finally see a light at the end of the tunnel” and is ready to get back to work. Most importantly, he insists the confidence issues that plagued him last year are forever in the past. “You can tell his confidence is at a much higher level,” teammate Aaron Gray said of Fields after the first couple days of camp. “He had to deal with so much last year that I hope no player has to do. Just finding your rhythm and your balance between life and basketball, its huge.” Finding serenity in his private life, with a marriage and the birth of his first child, has allowed him to find that balance and put basketball in perspective. Although Steve Novak and Austin Daye will compete with Fields for minutes behind Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan at the wing positions, the presence of accomplished shooters could take the pressure off the Stanford grad. “I told him, dont even worry about his shot,” said Raptors coach Dwane Casey. “Hes been working his butt off on his shot, his shot has improved but Im not even concerned about that because he brings so many other things to the table.” “I think the weight of the world is off his shoulder,” he continued. “Hopefully him knowing that we dont need his shooting to give us a chance to win, that takes some [pressure off].” Instead, Fields will be asked to contribute in other areas of the game, areas he has excelled at in the past, making for what should be a natural transition into his new role. At 6-7 Fields is a skilled defender that Casey has used in man coverage on the likes of LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony. He can handle the ball, move without it and rebound as well as anyone at his position. This will be an important season for Fields as he continues to work his way back from an injury that, at least temporarily, changed the way he approached his job. “Im just trying to go out there and really try to have fun again,” he said with a smile on his face. “I think last year with the injury it took away that fun aspect for me of basketball and you never want to go to work and not have fun.” “I would still work hard but [when] you dont see the kind of results that youre putting the time in to get, it really starts to play with you. So this year Im not [going] to worry about any of that, just [going to] try to go out there and play for my teammates, play for the city and really have fun with it all.” . – Eries top line of Dane Fox, Connor Brown and Connor McDavid combined for six goals and 14 points as the Otters crushed the visiting Windsor Spitfires 9-0 on Sunday in Ontario Hockey League play. The Shockers (24-0, 11-0 Missouri Valley) extended their school-record winning streak and improved to 11-0 in conference play for the first time in school history. They have won three straight in the series. The only undefeated team in Division I is No. 2 Syracuse (22-0). Manny Arup had 16 points and Jake Odum added 11 for Indiana State (17-6, 8-3) which couldnt avoid a rare home loss. The Sycamores were 8-0 at home this season and fell to 40-11 at the Hulman Center under fourth-year coach Greg Lansing. Four of those losses have come to the Shockers. Wichita State led 50-39 with 12:34 to go. Indiana State got as close as 58-56 with 2:01 to go but the Sycamores missed four of eight free throws down the stretch. It was the first time a team ranked this high played in Terre Haute since Larry Birds Sycamores were ranked No. 1 during the 1978-79 season. And the festive crowd couldnt wait. Students began lining up more than two hours before tip-off despite chilly temperratures and 6 inches of new snow. . When they got inside, almost every fan in the building was decked out in blue. But on the court, the emotions took a toll. The Sycamore shooters struggled, making just 32.1 per cent. Wichita State, meanwhile, didnt look sluggish at all despite having its arrival delayed until midday Wednesday by the winter storm. Instead, they started fast and finished it off by scoring the final seven points to pull away. In between, the Sycamores played valiantly. They fought back from an early deficit to get within 36-35 at halftime, and opened the second half by taking a 37-36 lead. The Shockers fended off that challenge with defence. It forced six straight missed shots and went on a 14-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 50-39 with 12:34 to play. But when Indiana State heated up again, it stormed back. The Sycamores scored eight straight to close to 52-50 just 3 1/2 minutes later and got as close as 58-56 late. They had a chance to tie it, but Justin Gant was too far underneath the basket for a layup. Indiana State never got another chance to tie it because of the missed free throws.
