MONTREAL — Marco Di Vaio wasted no time in connecting with his new fan base on Monday. cheap nfl jerseys china . Di Vaio made his first comments in French, his second language, after the Montreal Impact introduced their newly-signed Italian striker as the Major League Soccer teams first designated player. The Serie A veteran was touched when he and his family were greeted by a crowd of some 150 Impact fans upon arrival at Trudeau International Airport on Sunday night. He decided to return that courtesy by reaching out in French as soon as the opportunity presented itself. “Merci, beaucoup,” Di Vaio said at Mondays introductory news conference. “Bonjour tout le monde.” The 36-year-old Italian internationals wife and daughter looked on as Di Vaio continued to speak in measured but comfortable French, thanking Bologna, his former team in the top Italian league, for allowing him to leave to play in Montreal. “Its an honour for me to be here to work with the Impact in the MLS,” said Di Vaio, who flew with his family via London. “Its not easy for me right now but I hope my French will get a little bit better.” Di Vaio then alternated between French and Italian throughout the press conference at the Impacts downtown offices. Di Vaio, who scored 142 goals in 342 games in Serie A, joins fellow Italians Matteo Ferrari and Bernardo Corradi, the latter who is expected to team with his countryman up front. “I know they brought me here to score goals,” Di Vaio said in Italian, with his comments translated into French by Impact sporting director Nick De Santis. “Ive done that throughout my whole career and thats the challenge in front of me. Im excited about everything to do with building up a new team together. I want to be a part of this team, not just as an individual but as part of the group, as well.” Di Vaio will take a two-week vacation with his family in Florida. He will be eligible to play for Montreal when the international transfer window opens on June 27. “I could have probably stayed and played at the highest level in Italy,” Di Vaio said. “I felt that it was time for me to move away and try something new. The Italian championship is very demanding and I just felt that there was a new experience that I wanted to try.” The team store had an Impact “Di Vaio” No. 9 jersey on display. “I want to thank Marco and his family as well for believing in the Impact,” said team owner Joey Saputo. Having noted that he had delivered on his promise of signing a designated player, Saputo offered a fans perspective assessment of Di Vaio. “He happens to be at the right place at the right time in order to score the right goals,” Saputo said. Two days after seeing his team drop a second game in a row with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss at Colorado, head coach Jesse Marsch was all smiles about his newest player. “For our team I think hes the perfect fit,” Marsch said. "We need somebody in the attacking third that can really make sense of things and ultimately score goals. And the person that Marco is cant be remissed either because he has shown such great interest in being here. “He has already talked about how important it is to be part of a club and what thats meant for his experience at Bologna, and I know that hell add to us in that way, which I think is extremely important and cant be forgotten.” Marsch expects that Di Vaio will not have a difficult transition to playing in the MLS. “Hes an incredibly intelligent player and I think more than anything thats the quality that he has. He figures out the game, he knows how to slow things down, around the goal hes quite remarkable so I think there will be an adjustment period for both him and for the team, but I expect the transition to be fairly smooth based on the fact that its still football.” Whats key for Di Vaio is that its a type of soccer that he wanted to experience for himself. “I wanted to see this new soccer,” Di Vaio said. “Theyre speaking a lot about MLS and North American soccer in Europe and I want this new challenge.” cheap nfl jerseys . Sabathia did not get a decision on Monday against Tampa Bay, as he allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings. Hes 13-4 on the year to go along with a 3.42 ERA. Since winning six decisions over a nine-start stretch, Sabathia is 0-1 over his last two outings, but still has only allowed more than three runs once in his previous 10 trips to the hill. The Texas Rangers quickly got even, and the right-hander felt like he was starting over when he got back on the mound.HALIFAX - Antoine Bibeau made 39 saves, including 17 in the third period, as the Val-dOr Foreurs defeated the host Halifax Mooseheads 3-2 in Game 7 to advance to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League final. Maxime Presseaults goal at 13:59 of the second period broke a 2-2 deadlock for the Foreurs, who trailed the series 3-2 before winning back-to-back games, and Guillaume Gelinas and Pierre-Maxime Poudrier also scored. Nikolaj Ehlers and Philippe Gadoury each had a goal and an assist for the Mooseheads while Jonathan Drouin tacked on an assist for his playoff-leading 41st point in 16 contests. Halifaxs Zachary Fucale turned away 13-of-16 shots in a losing cause. Val-dOr went 0 for 3 on the power play while the Moooseheads scored once on five chances with the man advantage. cheap jerseys. -- DRAKKAR 2 ARMADA 1 BAIE-COMEAU, Que. — Charles Hudons power-play goal at 12:46 of the first period stood up as the winner as the Drakkar slipped past Blainville-Boisbriand with a Game 7 victory in their third-round matchup. Alexandre Ranger also scored for Baie-Comeau, which will meet Val-dOr for the President Cup. Frederic Bergeron scored the lone goal for the Armada. Drakkar netminder Philippe Cadorette made 24 saves for the win as Blainville-Boisbriands Etienne Marcoux stopped 16-of-18 shots in defeat. Baie-Comeau went 1 for 1 on the power play while the Armada failed to score on four chances with the man advantage. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

Much like his play on the pitch over the last twenty years, Alessandro Nestas retirement announcement was understated. . If you werent watching closely, you might not even have noticed that one of the games great defenders is calling it a day. Nesta has decided to hang up his boots at the end of the 2013 MLS season. In his prime, Nesta was world class – one of the best central defenders of his generation and, arguably, one of the greatest to ever play the position. While others – Franz Beckenbauer, Bobby Moore or Franco Baresi in particular – dominate the debate over who was the greatest ever, Nesta is not far from that class. Even at the age of 37, I saw glimpses from Nesta this season that were like winding the clock back a decade. Gliding across the pitch at the back to intercept a pass, sidestep a forward and calmly distribute the ball to a teammate. It was as though he were playing the game in slippers, casually enjoying a cigar and three fingers of brandy at the same time. He was coolness personified; like James Dean in football boots. At other times, though, it was painful watching one of the games greats losing the footrace with father time. In New York in July, Nesta struggled badly as the Montreal Impact lost to the Red Bulls by a score of 4-0. In September, Nesta was found wanting as the Vancouver Whitecaps crushed the Impact 3-0 in Montreal. The mind was willing, but the body was unable to keep up. But it would be entirely unfair to let those images tarnish what has been a remarkable career for the Italian. A World Cup winner in 2006 (although he readily admits that the injury he suffered in the group stage that subsequently ended his tournament took the lustre off the title) and Euro 2000 runner-up with Italy; three-time Serie A winner; three-time Coppa Italia winner; three-time UEFA Super Cup winner; three-time UEFA Champions League winner with Milan; four-time Serie A Defender of the Year; four-time UEFA Team of the Year and two-time FIFPro World XI – the list of Nestas honours in the game is staggering. Yet Nesta wants one more title before his playing career is over. He wants to win the MLS Cup with the Montreal Impact. To do so, Nesta will need his teammates to do him a favour, as he is unlikely to be involved in Saturdays final regular season game in Toronto (You can catch the game live on TSN at 4pm et/1pm pt.) In the final stages of last weekends vital 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Philadelphia Union, Nesta left the game with a calf strain. The injury could mean that Nestas retirement starts early, but the Italian will hope to recover in time to play a part in the Impacts first ever post-season appearance…if his teammates can get him there. It wont be easy for Montreal. While Toronto FCs playoff dreams were realistically over sometime in the middle of the season, they would desperately love to get one over on the Impact by sending them crashing to defeat at their final playoff hurdle. Like fans of both clubs, Nesta will be a spectator on Saturday. But fans of the beautiful game must surely be hoping for an encore playoff performance from the Italian to cap what has been a magnificent career. After Gasquet beat fifth-seeded Ivan Dodig of Croatia 7-5, 6-3, Tsonga followed up with a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2 win against sixth-seeded Edouard Roger-Vasselin in an all-French match. Gasquet, ranked ninth, broke Dodig twice in the first set and once more in the second set, where he saved three break-points of his own. He sealed the win on his own serve when Dodigs forehand from the back of the court was wide. “I played a solid match. I served well, didnt really drop off at all during the match and managed to save some break-points,” said Gasquet, who lost the Open Sud de France final in Montpellier to countryman Gael Monfils earlier this month. “Im happy to be in the semifinals. Its the first time Ive reached the semifinals here so Id like to get to the final.” Gasquet next faces third-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, who won 6-3, 7-6 (1) against No. 8 Nicolas Mahut of France to reach his second consecutive semifinal. He leads thee 23rd-ranked Gulbis 2-0 in the career head-to-heads. . Tsonga, who improved to 4-0 against Roger-Vasselin, next faces Germanys Jan-Lennard Struff, who continued his run toward a first career final with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Frenchman Michael Llodra. “Edouard played very well. He took his chance in the tiebreaker and was very aggressive,” Tsonga said. “It was tricky and Im glad to have got out of it. I hope I recover well so that I can play a good match tomorrow.” Tsonga broke Roger-Vasselin twice in the second and third sets, and sealed victory on his first match point with a backhand pass down the line. But Tsonga, who had 39 winners, was unhappy with his overall performance. “I got through with my serve tonight,” he said. “The rest wasnt great and at one point I wanted to leave the court because I was ashamed of how I was playing.” The 23-year-old Struff, who is ranked 117th, had nine aces, won 87 per cent of first-service points, did not face a single break-point and broke Llodras serve three times in a dominant performance. (SportsNetwork.com) – Jeff Samardzija makes his Oakland debut on Sunday, as the Athletics try to complete a four-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays at O.co Coliseum. Samardzija, of course, was acquired along with fellow right-hander Jason Hammel from the Chicago Cubs on Saturday for Oaklands top two prospects, as well as hard-throwing right-hander Dan Straily. “Im right where I need to be, man,” Samardzija said Saturday, when he joined the team in Oakland. “Ive been begging for this for a while, situation-wise, of coming in every day to win games.” Samardzija has pitched well for the Cubs this season despite his 2-7 record, as Chicago has been shut out five times over his 17 starts and scored two or less runs in 11 of those outings. Hes also struck out 103 batters in 108 innings pitched this year. “Im coming to a team that has done fine without me and Im just looking to do my part,” said Samardzija. “Hopefully, I add to the depth of the pitching staff.” Oakland took the first three games of this weekends series, including a 5-1 triumph on Saturday. Josh Donaldson homered and Nate Freiman, Jed Lowrie, Alberto Callaspo and Stephen Vogt each drove in a run as well for Oakland in Saturdays win. That was plenty of offense for starter Scott Kazmir, who let up just one run on three hits over seven innings, while striking out eight batters. Oaklands current three-game winning streak comes on the heels of three-game sweep it suffered against Detroit this past week. Mark Buehrle allowed three runs on 10 hits over six innings to take the loss. He is now 10-6 and has lost his last four decisions. The Blue Jays have lost six of their last eight contests. Drew Hutchison will make the start for Toronto in Sundays finale. The 23-year-old has been solid in the rotation for the Blue Jays this season, posting a record of 6-6 with a 3.81 ERA in 17 starts just a year after he did not make a single appearance at the Major League level due to injury. He had started in 11 games during the 2012 season. Hutchison pitched one of the best games of his career his last time out, twirling seven innings of one-run ball, while striking out a career-high 10 batters to help Toronto to a 4-1 win. The right-hander had lost three of his previous four decisions. Sundays start will be the first Hutchison has ever made against Oakland. Although Oakland has had the upper hand this weekend, Toronto has been the more dominant between these teams recently. The Blue Jays swept a three-game series at home from May 23-25 and won two of three in Oakland a season ago. . PAUL, Minn. – The Nashville Predators finished strong, even if was for naught. The Minnesota Wild are hoping this is only the start. Craig Smith had two goals and two assists, and the Predators used a second-period barrage against goalie Ilya Bryzgalov to beat the playoff-bound Wild 7-3 on Sunday. “Like the last exhibition game before the start of a season, always happy to have that one over with,” Wild coach Mike Yeo said. The Wild wrapped up the first wild card spot in the Western Conference earlier in the week and had their first-round matchup with the Colorado Avalanche set before the game, so there were few motivators other than the maintenance of health and momentum and maybe a statistical milestone or two. Well, all but the momentum was accomplished. No new injuries were reported, and Jason Pominville got his 30th goal. “Obviously it wasnt pretty. It wasnt the way we want to end it and I dont want to make an excuse for it, but I think those things will happen when youre in and the other team is out, playing loose,” Pominville said. For the second straight night, Nashville scored seven times. The Predators won 7-5 at Chicago on Saturday. Good way for coach Barry Trotz, the only bench boss the franchise has ever had, to go out if hes not retained. Trotz said he realized this could be his last game with the team. “If I said differently Id be lying,” he said. Bryzgalov, though, didnt do himself or the Wild any good with this shaky performance, as meaningless as the game was. Bryzgalov posted back-to-back shutouts in victories over Pittsburgh and Winnipeg on April 5 and 7, but in a win over Boston he gave up three goals on 24 shots in regulation, though he was unscored upon in the shootout. Bryzgalov, acquired from Edmonton for a fourth-round draft pick, has allowed eight goals over the last 45 shots hes faced. John Curry, the fifth goalie used by the Wild this season, replaced him for the third period. Ryan Ellis, Shea Weber, Roman Josi and Smith scored consecutively in the second period to steer Bryzgalov toward the bench at the second intermission. Rich Clune had a goal in the first period, and Calle Jarnkrok and Smith scored in the final frame. Erik Haula, Jason Pominville and Zach Parise scored for the Wild,, who gave up a season-high seven goals.dddddddddddd One of the reasons the Wild were safely in, rather than scrambling to win their last game to qualify as they did last season, was the sturdiness shown by the 33-year-old Bryzgalov down the stretch with their top three goalies unavailable due to injury or illness. This was his first regulation loss in 11 starts — he went 7-1-3 — since arriving the day before the trade deadline. But this was ugly. Yeo didnt flinch, though. “Im not worried about him,” the coach said, adding: “You look at tonight, and we were brutal in front of him.” The Predators missed the playoffs for a second straight year, putting Trotzs future in question. “Thats not our decision to make. Theres nothing that we could do as players in this locker room. We played our hearts out for him. Hes a great coach and well see what happens,” Weber said. Nashville went 9-1-2 in its final 12 games, including eight regulation wins, but finished in 10th place — three points below the cut. The Predators killed every penalty over their previous five games, a streak that ended when Parise scored his 29th goal — he missed 15 games earlier this season — early in the second period to give Bryzgalov and the Wild a 3-1 edge. Nashville also became the only team in the league this season to not allow a short-handed goal, stretching its streak to 99 games without one. “We stuck with it. You always want to go out on a good note,” said Smith, who passed Weber for the team lead with 24 goals. Weber had 23 and Patric Hornqvist finished with 22. Weber tallied a career-high 56 points. “If he doesnt win the Norris this year its going to be an absolute crime,” Trotz said. NOTES: With 98 points, the Wild matched their second-best record in franchise history. After going 5-14-5 on the road in last seasons lockout-abbreviated schedule, the Predators finished 19-15-7 away from home. … Pominville became only the third different player in Wild history to hit the 30-goal mark. Marian Gaborik (five times) and Brian Rolston (three times) were the others. … Clune was called for roughing and cross checking and slapped with a 10-minute misconduct. He finished with 166 penalty minutes this season, fourth-most in the NHL. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

Every night of the Stanley Cup playoffs, TSN hockey analyst and former NHL goaltender Jamie McLennan breaks down each goalies performance. Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Tuukka Rask, Boston (4) – Explosive, perfect positioning and great rebound control for all five games that led to this series being clinched. The Datsyuk goal came off a rare rebound, but he had big saves on Franzen, Datsyuk, Glendening, and Alfredsson. He made it look easy. Jonas Gustavsson, Detroit (3) – He had some great saves in the game on Smith, Boychuk, Eriksson, and Soderberg. Not a lot of chance on the goals. Monster gave the Wings an opportunity to win. Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh (4) – Huge response game. He looked comfortable and relaxed given the pressure on him and made big saves on Dubinsky and Johanssen. There was a lot of traffic plays in front of him, and he did a good job of fighting through it. Made a great save on Johanssen in the third which hit Crosbys knee and changed directions, he was able to squeeze the pads to make the save. Active stick all game, aggressive and well timed. Sergei Bobrovsky, Columbus (4) – Big saves on Crosby, Neal, Kunitz, Stempniak, and Sutter were the norm. He was the only reason it was close; was really good at controlling his rebounds. His work ethic in the net is evident as he never gives up on a shot – the Crosby back door save on the PK rebound was evidence of that. Semyon Varlamov, Colorado (4) – Strong again. He was under fire but extremely quick but controlled movements. Great crease work again on Grandlund and Koivu. Once again the big reason to the Avs success; timely big saves. Darcy Kuemper, Minnesota (3) – Good saves on MacKinnon, McGinn, Statsny, and Holden early on to look poised and relaxed on the road. No chance on the first two goals against; deflections. The game-winning goal was a great skill play by MacKinnon through a bit of a screen. Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles (5) – Brilliant all night long, huge saves on Burns, Marleau, Pavelski, Couture. He was locked in all night, and you had a feeling he was going to dominate. The ridiculous save on Wingels, where he makes a left pad/glove save where the puck is going top glove, shows how fast and dynamic he is. Antti Niemi, San Jose (1) – Toffoli and Carters are not good goals against; Toffoli has a quick snap shot, but just beats him blocker side from far enough out, and Carters hit Stuarts skate, but check his post positioning – doesnt give himself a good chance for success. He got pulled in the first minute of the second period; rough night. Alex Stalock, San Jose (5) – Did a nice job of coming off the bench and mopping up, stopped the bleeding, had a calm demeanour. Good saves on Carter, Toffoli, Gaborik and Doughty. . LONDON — Every time Roger Federer steps onto the court these days it seems another milestone is within his grasp. He seized another one Saturday, reaching his 100th career final by beating David Ferrer of Spain 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals. Federer could add a few more Sunday. He is in position to win his 70th title overall and a record sixth at the season-ending tournament for the worlds top eight players. “Its obviously a special occasion for me,” said Federer, who will play Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final. Tsonga continued his strong play this week by beating Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-5 in the late match, putting the sixth-seeded Frenchman into the final of this event for the first time, in only his second appearance. The victory over Ferrer sent Federer past Andy Murray to No. 3 in the year-end rankings, trailing No. 1 Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Djokovic and Nadal were eliminated after losing two of their round-robin matches this week, both saying their minds and bodies werent up for top-level tennis following another gruelling season. Murray pulled out injured following his opening loss to Ferrer on Monday. In doubles, Max Mirnyi of Belarus and Daniel Nestor of Canada reached the final by beating American twins Bob and Mike Bryan 7-6 (6), 6-4. In the second semifinal, Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes of India were set to take on Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski of Poland. Federer — who holds a record 16 Grand Slam titles — is tied with Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras with five victories at the ATP Finals, formerly known as the Masters Cup. A win Sunday would also tie Lendls record of 39 match victories in the event. Federer became the fifth player to reach 100 finals in the open era, joining Jimmy Connors (163), Lendl (146), John McEnroe (108) and Guillermo Vilas (104). “Im shocked every time that Ive reached so many finals or won against so many players or whatever record it is,” Federer said. “It strikes me and makes me obviously very happy and very proud that Ive been able to do it for so many years at the highest of levels.” And with his 806th victory Saturday, Federer moved into a share of sixth place on the career list with Stefan Edberg. “Stefan was my idol,” Federer said. “So to achieve something that he achieved is obviously very nice. I dont think it matters mucch, but its still very nice to get reminded that you equalled your idols or heros achievements.dddddddddddd” In a tournament where his biggest rivals complained of fatigue after failing to make it out of the group stage, Federer showed no signs of slowing down. The 30-year-old Swiss extended his unbeaten streak to 16 matches after winning titles in Basel and Paris before coming to London. Federer has played some of his best tennis of the year in London, and while he did not look as sharp against Ferrer as he did in his three group-stage victories, he never faced a break point. He broke the fifth-seeded Spaniard twice in the second set and converted his second match point with a forehand winner. Ferrer came within two points of the first set six times in Federers service game when the Spaniard led 5-4. But he never earned a break point in a game that went to deuce five times, and Federer finally held when Ferrer sent a backhand passing shot wide. That marked a turning point, with Federer winning the next four games as well to take control. “Obviously it was a key 5-4 game for me,” Federer said. “That was a crucial sort of 15, 20 minutes for me. Im happy I was able to decide the match right there.” Ferrer dropped to 0-12 against Federer. The Spaniard started the week by beating Murray and Djokovic convincingly, but couldnt keep up that level of play less than 16 hours after losing a three-set match against Berdych on Friday. “Maybe I didnt have really time to relax, but (that) is not the excuse here,” Ferrer said. “He played better than me.” Berdych also struggled against the rested Tsonga, landing just 53 per cent of his first serves and double-faulting five times — including on break point to go down 4-3 in the second set. The Czech broke back immediately but then lost serve again to let Tsonga take a decisive 6-5 lead, and the Frenchman served out the match with an ace. Tsonga will play Federer for the third Sunday in a row, after losing to him in the Paris final two weeks ago and their first round-robin match in London last weekend. “Roger is the best player for the moment indoors,” Tsonga said. “Its going to be really special here, for my first final here. Its going to be an amazing atmosphere on court, and I like that. … I know its the last match (of the year) so I will give it everything.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

TAMPA, Fla. . - The Detroit Red Wings failed in the shootout, again. Martin St. Louis scored in the sixth round of the shootout, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Red Wings 2-1 on Thursday night. Detroit has lost its last 11 shootouts, including all six this season. “Its one of those things,” Detroit goalie Jonas Gustavsson said. “Its going to turn around, and then maybe were going to win five or 10 in a row in the shootout. Thats just how it goes. Weve got to find a way to do it.” St. Louis netted the lone shootout goal when he beat Gustavsson to the stick side. Detroit failed this time against Ben Bishop. “Weve got to find a way to score a goal for our goalie,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "Our goalie cant shut them all out. Guys that have scored fairly easily before, their attempts look like theyre tight, too. “Weve got to change that, too.” Nikita Kucherov scored for the Lightning in regulation. Kyle Quincey had the Red Wings only goal of the night. “Were finding a way, and you need to do that,” Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. Detroit is just 1-9, including nine straight defeats, this season in games decided in overtime or a shootout. The Red Wings were coming off a 3-2 shootout loss Tuesday at Florida. Quincey put the Red Wings up 1-0 with his first goal in 51 games, a rebound backhander from along the goal line just past the post at 15:04 of the first. The defenceman also snapped a 16-game point drought. Kucherov tied it when he beat Gustavsson from the high slot with 43.7 seconds remaining in the second. Gustavsson made a first-period save on Valtteri Filppulas in-close backhander. St. Louis sent a shot wide of the net during a short-handed breakaway early in the second. Bishop stopped a shot by Daniel Alfredsson on a 2-on-1 later in the period. An up-tempo third period featured nice saves by both goalies. Bishop made 28 saves in regulation. Gustavsson stopped 26 shots. “Both goalies are as big as a house,” Babcock said. “Theres no room, and both played really well.” Bishop improved to 16-5-2. “Bish is the backbone of our success,” St. Louis said. “Whenever you beat Detroit, its a big one.” Both teams had key players sidelined by injuries. Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard hurt a knee in practice on Wednesday and is scheduled to be evaluated Friday in Detroit. Forward Henrik Zetterberg, on the long-term injured list because of a back injury, is eligible to return Dec. 28 against Florida. The Lightning were without star centre Steven Stamkos, who hopes to return in February from a broken right leg. Defenceman Victor Hedman will be out at least another week due to a lower-body injury. NOTES: Detroit senior vice-president Jimmy Devellano and Chicago senior adviser Scotty Bowman, who won three championships as coach of the Red Wings, were at the game. Lowry joined TSN 1050 on Monday to discuss his personal growth, what was going through his mind on his final second drive and whether his future plans include staying in Toronto. “That last play will be my summertime grind,” Lowry said of his final shot which was blocked by Paul Pierce in the lane as time expired. MILAN, Italy — AC Milan gave title rival Juventus a boost as it was held to a 1-1 draw at Catania in Serie A on Saturday. Brazilian striker Robinho put Milan ahead in the first half before Nicolas Spolli equalized in the 57th minute. Robinho almost added a second goal when his shot appeared to have crossed the line. Catanias Alejandro Gomez had a shot ruled out for offside. The Argentine had earlier hit the crossbar. “It was hard to see, but Robinhos was a goal,” Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “Its not a question of referees though, everyone talks, but they should stay quiet. Seeing as others complain, well do so too. We never complain but we have to protect ourselves. We never make a fuss, but then they (Juventus) start talking again about referees. At this point Ill talk about refereeing decisions too.” Defending champion Milan remains top, five points clear of Juventus which hosts Napoli on Sunday. Milan, held to a midweek goalless draw in the Champions League against Barcelona, plays the second leg on Tuesday. Elsewhere, Sergio Floccari — on loan from Lazio — came back to haunt his parent club as his double helped Parma to a 3-1 victory. Lazio remains three points above Napoli and Udinese in the race for third place, having played a game more. Parma is eight points above the drop zone. Catania attacked from the start and Gonzalo Bergessio went close in the fourth minute when he raced into the right side of the penalty area but sent his effort wide of the near post. The visitors went close again moments later when Sergio Almiron just missed connecting with a teasing cross from Marco Motta. Milans first decent opportunity came in the eighth minute when Urby Emanuelson muscled his way into the area but Catania goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo got down well to deflect the Dutchmans effort. Carrizo again did well in the 17th to deny Zlatan Ibrahimovic from point-blank range after the striker chested down Massimo Ambrosinis clever pass over the defence. Bergessio went close moments later but his header scraped the top of the crossbar. . Milan took the lead in the 34th as Robinho lashed the ball into the bottom left corner after a deft one-two with Ibrahimovic. Catania almost levelled immediately but Gomezs curling shot crashed off the crossbar. Gomez had the ball in the back of the net less than two minutes after the break, but the Catania forward was judged to have been offside. Catania equalized 10 minutes later when Nicola Legrottaglie headed the ball and Spolli sidefooted it home from close range. It almost went in front shortly afterwards when Almirons fierce effort just flew over the bar. Milan went closer to restoring its lead as Robinho rounded Carrizo before slotting the ball towards goal. Giovanni Marchese cleared off the line although the ball appeared to go over. Ambrosini thought he gave Milan the lead in the 76th but Carrizo pulled off another brilliant save to keep out the Milan captains header at full stretch. Carrizo again came to his teams rescue seconds from fulltime to deny Ibrahimovic. Catania could have snatched all three points in stoppage time as first Mariano Izco and then Francesco Lodi had shots blocked by the Milan defence. Parma took an early lead when Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti made a great save to deny Sergio Floccari but the ball came out to McDonald Mariga, who curled it into the bottom left corner. Matters went from bad to worse in the 12th minute when Floccari headed Gabriel Palettas strike into an empty net after Marchetti came out to punch clear a corner. Lazio got back into the game eight minutes from the break when Andre Dias passed to Lionel Scaloni. The Argentine defenders 25-yard thunderbolt was deflected in by Parmas Massimo Gobbi. Floccari sealed the result in the 71st as he snuck in between Lazio defenders Abdoulay Konko and Stefan Radu to slot home Sebastian Giovincos free kick. The game was suspended for five minutes about an hour in after some floodlights went out. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

NEW YORK — Entering a big league ballpark will be a bit like going through an airport by 2015. . Major League Baseball has told its 30 teams they must implement security screening for fans by then, either with hand-held metal detection or walk-through magnetometers. “This procedure, which results from MLBs continuing work with the Department of Homeland Security to standardize security practices across the game, will be in addition to bag checks that are now uniform throughout MLB,” baseball spokesman Michael Teevan said Tuesday. The Seattle Mariners announced Tuesday that fans entering Safeco Field will have to walk through metal detectors starting with this years opener. Boston, the New York Mets, Oakland, Pittsburgh and San Francisco were among the teams that experimented with screening at times last year. Security gained more intense focus after three people were killed and more than 260 wounded in when two bombs were set off at the Boston Marathon finish line. “We conducted testing of these measures at the All-Star game and at both World Series venues last year, and we were pleased that it was effective and received without issue from fans,” Teevan said. MLB is being assisted by CEIA USA Ltd., which manufactures walk-through metal detectors, and the security company GSIS. Big league teams have generally limited bags that fans bring to 16 inches by 16 inches by 8 inches. In an effort to increase security this season, the NFL limited the size and type of bags fans can bring to games. With the exception of medically necessary items, only clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags no larger than 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches have been allowed. One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags also were permitted along with clear plastic bags approximately the size of someones hand. Barcelona hosts third-division side Cartagena in the return leg of their round-of-32 tie after winning their first meeting 4-1. . Tuesday nights 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox fit that category perfectly. Michael Bourns two-run double in the seventh inning snapped a 3-all tie and extended Clevelands winning streak to a season-high five straight games. Eden Hazard and Samuel Etoo scored first-half goals as Chelsea came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over title rival Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. After Martin Skrtel put the Reds in front from close range at Stamford Bridge after only four minutes, Hazard hit back in the 17th with a superb strike. Etoo gave Jose Mourinhos team a decisive lead from Oscars back pass in the 34th. Third-place Chelsea trails leader Arsenal by two points and Manchester City by one point. Liverpool is six points adrift after slipping to a second consecutive loss. Hazard was splendid throughout in his playmaker role, while Chelseas defenders did a good job of containing Luis Suarez, who was reunited with Branislav Ivanovic for the first time since he bit the Serbian defender on the arm last season and was banned for 10 games. With captain John Terry becoming the fourth Chelsea player to make 600 appearances for the club, the game started at a high tempo, with both sides involved in a gritty contest for possession. After Etoo was lucky to escape a booking for his challenge on Jordan Henderson, Liverpool made the most of the subsequent free kick, with Skrtel scoring a poachers goal from close range. Chelsea failed to clear Philippe Coutinhos free kick, Suarez headed the ball beyond Ivanovic and Skrtel tapped it home. Chelsea reacted immediately, only for Hazard to see his effort saved before Gary Cahill headed wide from Frank Lampards free kick in the eighth minute. Chelseas penalty appeals were waved away by referee Howard Webb after Hazard appeared to be clipped by Lucas in the box, and Lampard forced keeper Simon Mignolet to tip the ball over with a trademark powerful shot from outside the box. The home side was rewarded for its pressure soon afterward when Hazard gave Mignolet no chance with a superb curling shot for his eighth league goal of the season. Mourinho was forced to make an early defensive change as the injured Ivanovic was replaced by Ashley Cole after 30 minutes. But Liverpool struggled to contain the Blues relentless attacks and Etoo converted his teams dominance into a goal when he scored from close range from Oscars pass, despite Mignolet getting a hand to the ball. The Reds continued to threaten on the break and had a chance to level before the interval, with Joe Allens shot from the right side of the box drawing a good diving save from Petr Cech. There were further scoring chances in the second half, with Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho being unlucky to see his looping header hit the crossbar from a free kick as Cech looked well-beaten. At the other end, Etoo missed a clear-cut chance when he fired straight at Mignolet from a good position in the 54th. Suarezs volley four minutes later was easily stopped by Cech as Liverpool created more space in the hosts half. But Chelsea weathered Liverpools attacks and could even have won by a bigger margin. Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres eased past Mamadou Sakho and Skrtel but failed to beat Mignolet with his shot in the closing stages. The France striker ended a run of seven matches without a goal when he broke the deadlock with a header from Theo Walcotts free kick in thhe 65th minute. Authentic Chiefs Jerseys. . It was Girouds 11th goal this season. Arsenal overtook Manchester City to regain top spot in the Premier League with 42 points from 19 matches, with City trailing one point behind. “There was a big satisfaction because we surprised many people and we want to go from there, we played two away games and got six points against West Ham and Newcastle and as you can see the team is ready for a fight,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. “Lets keep fighting and trying to develop the team.” In a scrappy encounter with few chances for both sides, the hosts missed an opportunity to level the score in added time when Hatem Ben Arfa fired a shot wide. Mesut Ozil missed the game with a shoulder injury, and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he expects the Germany midfielder to be out for Wednesdays game against Cardiff as well. Wengers team enjoyed long periods of possession and created several chances early on but was unable to convert them before Newcastle almost went ahead toward the end of the first half when Moussa Sissokos shot was tipped over by Wojciech Szczesny. Mathieu Debuchy also headed against the bar. Giroud had a chance to double the lead when Walcotts lob from close range was saved by Debuchy but the Frenchman failed to connect properly with the loose ball. Newcastle pushed forward toward the end but Alan Pardews team slipped to just its second loss in 10 Premier League matches. “We certainly didnt deserve to get beat but a mistake cost us at a set play, and we then had some moments at the end but we have come out with our confidence renewed even though we have lost,” Pardew said. New manager Tim Sherwood earned his first win at White Hart Lane on Sunday as Tottenham easily beat Stoke 3-0 in the Premier League. Roberto Soldado converted his fifth penalty of the season in the first half while Aaron Lennon and Mousa Dembele added goals in the second for a comfortable win. It was Tottenhams first clean sheet in the league since Nov. 3 and the win puts Spurs level on points with Manchester United with 34 at the halfway point of the season. Tottenham next travels to Old Trafford to play United on Wednesday. Stoke never looked like threatening the Spurs goal, although had a penalty appeal waved away when Michael Dawson hacked down Oussama Assaidi in the box when the game was goalless. Three days after its first home loss in a year, Everton bounced back to beat Southampton 2-1 at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Sunday. The home side took the lead through Seamus Coleman in the ninth minute when the defender slotted into the net from close range. Southampton battled back and found the equalizer through Gaston Ramirez, who converted Adam Lallanas pass with a left-footed shot from outside the box in the 71st. But Romelu Lukaku, who came into the game without a goal in five matches, found the winner three minutes later to banish memories of the unlikely 1-0 loss to last-place Sunderland on Boxing Day. Olivier Giroud ensured that Arsenal will finish the year atop the Premier League standings by scoring the winner for the Gunners in a 1-0 win at Newcastle on Sunday. While hockey pundits across the country continue to debate whether P.K. Subban should be on Team Canada for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, his own head coach has already offered an endorsement. “The way hes playing right now, Subban is making a great case for the Olympic team,” Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien told reporters at the teams practice in Washington on Thursday. “We want him to go there.” Subban, 24, has picked up right where he left off on the stat sheet from last year, scoring three goals and 18 assists in 25 games with the Canadiens this season. There was plenty of attention and speculation surrounding the 2013 Norris Trophy winners ice time and relationship with Therrien earlier this month, as his minutes – especially late in the game and in penalty-killing situations – were limited. “I will not comment on the ice time of any player,” Therrien said after a 3-2 shootout loss to St. Louis in early November. “But Subban played a hell of a game for us – exactly what we needed from him.” Subban is in the final year of a two-year contract he signed with the Canadiens during the 2012-13 NHL season and early negotiations have already started on a possible new deal. The two-year contract, signed after Subban missed the first four games of the truncated 48-game season, is worth a total of $5.75 million, with $2 million going to Subban in the shortened season and $3.75 million coming his way this year. RENTON, Wash. — Michael Bennett gambled last off-season that playing on a one-year deal in Seattle would pay off in the future with the long-term contract he always wanted. He was proven to be correct. Bennett now has a Super Bowl title and a new four-year contract that will keep him with the Seahawks. “I dont know if there was any doubt, but there was a lot of speculation a lot of teams tried to get me to come there,” Bennett said Monday after signing his new deal. “But ultimately I wanted to come back and play with these guys and win some more games.” Bennett was considered one of the top free agents in the NFL after a breakout season with the Seahawks where he led the team in sacks and proved a versatile option as a defensive end and defensive tackle. But he never made it all the way to the start of free agency Tuesday after the Seahawks came up with a satisfactory deal. Terms were not announced by the team. Pro Football Talk reported Bennetts deal was worth about $28.5 million with $16 guaranteed. Bennett said there were other teams offering more money, but the guaranteed amount was most important. Bennett was thought to have been strongly pursued by Chicago, where he had a chance of joining his brother, Martellus, with the Bears. But he ultimately decided to return to Seattle. “Yeah there was more, but I wanted to be here man. There are a lot of young guys here, and there are a lot of winning ways and I just love the organization and the things that they are about. I love the staff, from the equipment staff to the medical staff; it just goes on and on.” Lost in the speculation about Bennetts future was his history with Seattle and specifically defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn. The Seahawks signed Bennett as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M in 2009 and gave him a spot on their roster for the start of that season when Quinn was his defensive line coach. Even though he was eventually waived and claimed by Tampa Bay, that initial relationship with Seattle remained strong. Its partly why Bennett jumped at the chance to return last off-seaason with Quinn as the new defensive co-ordinator, even if it meant playing on a one-year deal that paid only $3 million in base salary.dddddddddddd Its also a factor in why hes staying now. “At the end of the day, it was about being comfortable and being in a good situation,” Bennett said. “Sometimes going to a whole other organization doesnt work out the way it worked out for me coming here and being with these guys. A lot of times people take a lot of money and they go to places and theyre not what they turned out to be. I know what this place is. Im familiar with the staff and players and it makes a big deal to be here.” Seattle seemed to understand what it would take to retain Bennett. The Seahawks parted with defensive end Red Bryant and wide receiver Sidney Rice to create additional salary cap space. Coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider have been steadfast that their top priorities in free agency were retaining their own players and not making big splashes by signing others. Bennett was at the top of the list with wide receiver Golden Tate not far behind. Bennett had 8 1/2 sacks in the regular season and a fumble return for a touchdown. His numbers would have likely been higher had the Seahawks figured out earlier in the season how best to utilize their defensive line rotation. Bennett had even more impact in the playoffs. He had a forced fumble and recovery that gave Seattle an early lead in the NFC divisional playoff win over New Orleans, and added one sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in the NFC championship game against San Francisco. “We had hopes he would be a real contributor and he exceeded our expectations and were excited to keep him,” Carroll told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Monday. “Hes got great energy, a terrific motor and hes a very versatile football player. We really need to play him more. He didnt play a lot of plays the first half of the season, we specialty played him, and then we played him more as the year went on. We got better and he helped us. Were excited about it.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

The 29-year-old from Roscoe, Ill., seems to be having more fun driving part-time in the NASCAR Nationwide series for JR Motorsports than in the open-wheel series. Shes now in her second year in NASCAR, and the results are starting to come. On March 5 this year, driving the No. 7 Chevrolet Impala, she was fourth at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, becoming the first woman to win a major NASCAR national touring event. On July 1 at the famed Daytona International Speedway, Patrick led for 13 of 100 laps and took control, directing teammate Aric Almiroal to “Just follow my ass, OK” and draft in behind her as she carved a path through the wind. Hopes were dashed on the final lap when Patrick got caught up in a multi-car wreck, but she still managed to lug the fiery stock car over the finish line for a 10th-place finish. Afterward she jumped out of the car, high-fived her crew and told reporters: “I had a hell of a lot of fun.” IndyCar, by comparison, has been six plus seasons of steady but unspectacular results in the No. 7 electric green GoDaddy.com Dallara-Honda. This year has been no exception. Patrick has five top-10 finishes in 10 races, but has never been higher than fifth. The championship is a distant memory — she sits tied for 10th with Canadian Alex Tagliani, 180 points back. She has won one race in her career and while she runs consistently in the top half of the field, the results have not reflected a driver with access to top engineers and a racing team with deep pockets like Andretti Autosport. Its been promise unfulfilled for a woman who burst onto the nationaal racing scene in 2005, making history for women at the Indianapolis 500 by finishing fourth and leading for 19 laps.dddddddddddd Success, combined with her good looks and savvy marketing, vaulted her into instant IndyCar “It Girl” status. Shes in swimsuit layouts, and on talk shows, presents awards with heartthrob Justin Bieber, and seen by millions in Super Bowl commercials. There have been moments of unalloyed joy, capped by her spraying champagne on the top of the podium after her lone IndyCar win, in Japan in 2008. Most days on track, though, the worlds photographers always seem to catch her looking like a robot, marching in a straight line from pits to paddock, her mouth a razor-thin scar, humanity obscured by oversized, black Terminator sunglasses. When there is emotion, it ends up being YouTube fodder of her squabbling with other drivers, complaining about the car on the radio, or having a slapfight with infamous IndyCar road hazard Milka Duno. Patrick said she still loves the feel of the open wheel. “Theres nothing like driving an open wheel car. They have an amazing feel out there,” she said. “(But) sometimes its a little bit of follow the leader (in Indycar), so sometimes its fun to race the stock car.” She admits she prefers the breakneck speed of the ovals to the twisty-turns of the road and street courses. IndyCar has moved away from ovals in the last few years, and circuit CEO Randy Bernard says it will stay a 50-50 split. The hard-core traditionalists and gearheads like the ovals, he said in a recent interview, but the youth market and the big sponsorships are with the street and road venues. Patrick said she has made her peace with that. “I think we have to go where the people are, and where the people want to see us, not only get the fans to come out to the race track, but get them to watch on TV,” she said. "You can get a remarkable 200,000 people at a race, but a 0.2 (TV) rating is not good. “You have to get the ratings. Thats what the sponsors look at, so whatever you have to do to get that I think is the right direction.” Its also one more reason for her to go to the more popular NASCAR, but Patrick isnt saying. “I just listen to my heart,” she said. OTTAWA, Ont. — The Florida Panthers may have come into Ottawa with new leaders, but they left with a familiar result. Kyle Turris had a goal and an assist in the Senators 3-2 win over Florida on Saturday, spoiling the debut of the Panthers new coaching staff. Kevin Dineen was let go as the head coach of the Panthers on Friday along with assistant coaches Gord Murphy and Craig Ramsay. Dineen was replaced with Peter Horachek, who was the coach of Floridas minor-league team in San Antonio. Original Florida captain Brian Skrudland — who had been serving as the teams director of player development — and former Panthers centre John Madden became the replacements for Murphy and Ramsay. The trio had barely 24 hours, and one practice in order to get the team ready for a pair of weekend games. “Its impossible and its not going to happen so what you can do is make little changes,” Horachek said after the game. “What you hopefully are going to create is an attitude about work. When there are changes, people hesitate. You know, theyre not playing the way they need to, just reacting instead of thinking, and so you add a little bit each time and hopefully youre going to continue that and get them to a place where the work is fun and the work is solid and consistent.” Mika Zibanejad and Clarke McArthur also scored for the Senators (7-6-4), who won for the third straight time. Lehner made 25 saves for the win. Nick Bjugstad and Marcel Goc replied for the Panthers (3-10-4), who have now lost eight straight, despite a 28-save performance from Tim Thomas in his first game back after missing six straight with a lower body injury. “Were starting to feel pretty good about ourselves,” Senators coach Paul MacLean said. "I thought the way we played was pretty solid and Robin Lehner gave us another good game. We also kept the shots under 30 which certainly gives our goalies a chance to play well. “I thought our penalty killing, especially the five-on-three in the third period with Derek Grant, Marc Methot and Jared Cowen was outstanding and a big reason why we won the game.” Trailing 3-1, the Panthers had a two-man advantage for a minute and 17 seconds in the third period and despite controlling the puck for nearly the entire time, they were unable to beat Lehner and put only three shots on net. The Senators took four minor penalties in the third period alone. “That five-on-three was huge,” Senators defenceman Methot said. “Its very frustrating as a player, especially towards the end when were taking all those penalties. Its like were trying to give them an opportunity to get back in the game, but Lehner was huge for us back there.” Less than three minutes after the second penalty ended, Goc beat Lehner with a wrist shot to pull the Panthers to within a goal. The Senators scored the only goal of the second period on the front end of a five-on-three power play. After passing the puck around the Panthers end, McArthur was finally able to put a one-timer past Thomas after taking a pass from defenceman Erik Karlsson. Two quick goals by the Senators put the Panthers on their heels early and presented the visitors with a deficit from which they were never able to recover. The first goal came off the stick of Turris, but it was the work of Bobby Ryan that made it possible. Ryan broke in alone on the Boston goal and was stopped by Thomas, but Ryan followed the puck to the corner and sent a pass to Turris at the edge of the faceoff circle. Turriss shot promptly beat Thomas with at 1:45. Just 19 seconds later, Zibanejad scored from behind the net as he banked a shot off Panthers defenceman Erik Gudbranson and in following a Florida turnover in their own end. “The game started out a little scrambly and I felt a little out of sorts at the beginning and kind of wasnt awake for that first goal,” Thomas said. “I wasnt expecting a shot to come from that angle and I had to get back into game type of thinking rather than practice.” The Panthers got on the board one minute later on a great effort from Bjugstad, when he got away from Karlsson and cut to the front of the net to jam the puck past Lehner. Karlssons defence partner, Cowen, also appeared to back off while in front of the net allowing Bjugstad extra room. The rest of the period featured multiple odd-man breaks for both sides and a lot of back-and-forth play, but no more goals. Notes: Eric Gryba and Joe Corvo were both scratches for the Senators Saturday afternoon while the Panthers Scott Gomez and Jacob MarkstromaBobby Ryan collected a first-period on the Senators first goal Saturday and in the process extended his point streak to six game (3G 7A)a Dineens coaching record with the Panthers was 56-62-28, including 3-9-4 this seasonaWhile sitting out the first game of a three-game suspension, Panthers forward Jesse Winchester not only missed out on playing his 250th NHL game, but also facing the team on which he played his first 233 games. Palat finiished second in rookie scoring with 59 points in 81 games and finished one goal behind the goal-scoring lead amongst freshmen with 23.dddddddddddd Johnson tied MacKinnon for the goal-scoring lead while also playing a full 82-game schedule. His 50 points were good for third amongst NHL rookies. This marks the first time two teammates have been among the Calder finalists since the Blackhawks Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews both finished top-three in 2008. BROOKLYN, N.Y. – A whopping 59 turnovers in three post-season games. Thereve been times the Toronto Raptors playoff series against the Brooklyn Nets has resembled a kick-ball tournament, with balls bouncing wildly off feet. The Nets lead the best-of-seven playoff series 2-1 heading into Sundays Game 4 at Barclays Center, and the Raptors know they desperately need to clean up their act to avoid heading back to Toronto trailing 3-1. You can catch the game live NOW on TSN and TSN GO with pre-game coverage. TSN.cas coverage includes live streaming of the fan festivities at Maple Leaf Square during the game, in-game highlights and live streaming of the post-game news conferences. “If we can get it down to 13, 12, somewhere in that area we are happy with that,” said Raptors coach Dwane Casey. "Some of the no-look passes, passes where we think our teammates are going to be, are things we can correct. “You are not going to turn some of our guys into Magic Johnson overnight but we can make better decisions of things we control in our turnovers.” Giveaways have been a theme of all three games, and each time, the Raptors have come away vowing to do a better job of protecting the ball. Yet the kick balls and the crazy passes continue. They coughed it up 19 times in Game 1, 21 times in Game 2, and 19 times in Friday nights Game 3, a 102-98 loss. The Raptors practised at Pace University on Saturday, just across the bridge from Brooklyn. It was a long morning of making adjustments on both the offensive and defensive end, said Casey, ahead of Game 4. The Raptors are looking for their first playoff victory on the road since a win over Philadelphia way back in 2001. At least for part of the practice, Casey addressed turnovers. He said aggression has something to do with it — players are getting bumped and giving up the ball. He spoke of working on players “dispositions,” which goes for both their aggression in holding onto the ball, and playing with aggression period. The Raptors were manhandled by the Nets for the better part of four quarters Friday, finally fighting back late in the game to come within a point. But disposition isnt an easy thing to coach with just a day or two between easy games. “Well, you have to appeal to the guys pride, their ego and intelligence and we have some intelligent players on this team,” the coach said. "Again, its playoff basketball. If you cant get a disposition in the right order at this time of year, this is what we play for. “Our franchise hasnt been there for a while so if we cant get excited now about being tough, physical and fighting through the screens, not complaining about it but fighting through the screens and not letting them hold you and getting to your spot, all those things are disposition plays.” DeMar DeRozan and Jonas Valanciunas have been Torontos best two players this series, but theyve also turned the ball over more than anyone. Valanciunas has turned it over 13 times, one more than DeRozan. The Nets have turned the ball over 31 times combined over the three games, and the discrepancy in giveaways is the one glaring statistic in a series that is otherwise so even. The Raptors have outscored the Nets by just a single point — 678-677 — in the seven meetings between these two teams this season. “Man weve just got to be strong with the ball,” said Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry. “Theyre definitely physical when we drive the lane but weve got to be a little bit stronger. Its playoff time. Weve got to be stronger with the ball when were driving.” Casey said the previous night that Lowry looked like hed been through a “15-round bout,” and the gritty point guard looked similarly the worse for wear Saturday morning. Parked on a bench before addressing the media, the teams medical staff inspected his right knee and his busted lip that required a stitch to close Friday night. Lowrys knee was sore from a knee-on-knee collision. “Im going to get treatment around the clock to get healthy. Ice, stim (muscle stimulator). . . weve got a great training staff. We did some work this morning, well do some work when I get back. Get to as close to 100 per cent as possible right now,” Lowry said. “Right now its very sore but I have no doubt that Im going to play.” DeRozan — who scored 30 points on Friday to become the first player in Raptors history to record 30-plus points in back-to-back playoff games — likes the quick turnaround between games. “I cant wait to play (Sunday),” the Raptors all-star said. “Honestly, get back out there and get a game.” “(One day between games) is a lot better,” DeRozan added. “I think we could use that to our advantage too, with the quick turnaround. Just come out with high energy knowing we need to get at least one game in their place before we go back home.” While the Raptors expected a hostile crowd in Brooklyns Barclays Center — especially after GM Masai Ujiris now famous F-bomb when mentioning the city — it was a pretty docile crowd that awaited them Friday. “It felt like another game to me, like a regular-season game,” DeRozan said. “When you talk about atmosphere, honestly, it didnt have nothing on Toronto at all. Thats just our fans though, so it was a lot different. Playing out there felt like another game. I felt comfortable out there. We just have to clean up some things.” The Raptors have to hope for better from starters Terrence Ross and Amir Johnson. Ross, who scored 51 points in a game earlier this season to tie Vince Carters franchise record, has struggled mightily. He has yet to score anywhere near double figures, finishing with five points on Friday. Johnson, while given the tough assignment of guarding perennial all-star Paul Pierce, has been hit or miss. He had seven points and four rebounds on Friday. Their teammates continue to be supportive of the two who were key in the Raptors getting to the playoffs this season. “Hes still the same Terrence,” DeRozan said, when asked about how Ross fared in practice Saturday. "We all understand everybodys not going to have their best nights. We all understand that. Our job is to keep everybodys confidence high. “Amir, Terrence, they understand whats at stake in this next game and theyre going to definitely come through for us.” . PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies kept their aces and added another starter. A person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Thursday that right-hander Roberto Hernandez and Phillies agreed to a one-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because an agreement has not been completed and the player must pass a physical. The 33-year-old Hernandez was formerly known as Fausto Carmona. He was arrested in January 2012 on charges of falsifying his identity that were later dropped. Major League Baseball suspended him for three weeks. Last year, he was 6-13 with a 4.89 ERA for Tampa Bay, and he is 59-82 with a 4.67 ERA over eight seasons overall, seven with the Cleveland Indians. Hernandez gives the Phillies depth on their staff. He is expected to compete for one of two spots in their rotation. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. made the move on the final day of baseballs winter meetings. The Phillies also selected right-hander Kevin Munson from Arizona in the Rule 5 draft. Among the top rumours earllier in the week were reports that Amaro was shopping Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels along with closer Jonathan Papelbon and All-Star outfielder Domonic Brown.dddddddddddd Amaro and manager Ryne Sandberg shot down reports that Lee and Hamels were available. The Phillies are looking to rebound from their first losing season in 11 years and hope to make another post-season run. They signed veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd and re-signed catcher Carlos Ruiz. Both moves are indicative of a team thats trying to contend, not rebuild. Adding Hernandez also fits in that category. Hernandez has his best season with the Indians was in 2007 when he was 19-8 with a 3.06 ERA and finished fourth in AL Cy Young Award voting. He was 13-14 with a 3.77 ERA in 2010 and made the All-Star team. Lee, Hamels and Kyle Kendrick fill Philadelphias top three spots in the rotation. Hernandez, Cuban righty Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez and righties Ethan Martin and Jonathan Pettibone will compete for the final two. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Of all the indelible moments from Dan Wheldons public memorial service — fellow IndyCar drivers Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan serving as pallbearers, his father carrying his racing helmet and country music star Wynonna Judd singing two gripping songs — the heart-wrenching letter from his wife cut deepest. Susie Wheldons letter to Dan left few eyes dry in the First Presbyterian Church of St. Petersburg. Wheldon, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, died last Sunday in IndyCars season finale at Las Vegas. He was remembered Saturday not only as a champion but as a devoted husband, caring father, loyal friend and beloved son. And one more thing: a neat freak. Hundreds said goodbye to the 33-year-old Englishman-turned-Floridian during a service that included a eulogy by the best man at his wedding, Judds rendition of “Amazing Grace” alongside a church choir and letters by his wife and sister that offered a detailed portrait of the popular, fun-loving and always tidy driver. “My sweet Dan, my whole body is aching, down to the deepest part of my soul,” Susie wrote in a letter read by family friend Michael Johnson. “I keep thinking this is a bad dream.” Susie wrote about how scared she is that shes going to forget things, how everything is moving so quickly and that she has to remember to breathe. “My heart is scattered in a million pieces,” she wrote. “I just want to wake up and hear your reassuring voice.” Dixon read another touching letter, this one from Wheldons little sister, Holly. “I know a lot of sisters would describe their brothers as amazing,” Holly wrote. “But mine was truly one of a kind.” Holly recalled having the “same compulsive disorder” as Dan and remembered spending late nights cleaning the floor and drinking tea together. “My brother was born to race,” she wrote. “Dan without racing is like a cup of tea without milk, and Dan loved tea.” She wrote about the great times they had on trips to the United States as kids and promised to “protect your family like you protected me.” Wheldon left behind two young sons, two-year-old Sebastian and seven-month-old Oliver. They were on hand for the service. Close friends and family members left the church and rode to the cemetery. Mourners filled the church, then watched Franchitti, Dixon, Kanaan and Wheldons three brothers load the casket. Some waved goodbye as the caravan drove away. Team owners Chip Ganassi and Roger Penske attended the service, along with just about every IndyCar driver as well as some from other racing series. “The past weeks been a tough one,” driver Graham Rahal said. “When its someone like Dan, it really puts it all in perspective. He was a gguy that was certainly friendly with everybody on the circuit and everybody close.dddddddddddd Theres just something about him. Its certainly a tough loss.” Drivers Will Power and Pippa Mann, both hurt in the 15-car crash that cast a shadow across the sport, were still dealing with injuries Saturday. Power was hobbling from a back injury; Manns right arm was bandaged. She had surgery on her burned right pinkie. Many of them were planning to attend another service in Indianapolis on Sunday. “Its almost indescribable,” driver Ryan Hunter-Reay said. "This is something that I never really experienced in my life. I had a good conversation with Dan on Saturday night about everything that was going to come up. In 2012, we were going to be teammates (at Andretti Autosport). “I just really looked up to him in many ways. Hes a champion of our sport, hes everything you would want to be on and off the track. Good has to come of this; it has to. Well all go on racing in his name. Its heartbreaking to see Susie and their two sons and the family. Were just there for them.” Drivers and other mourners told stories about Wheldon on a video to be kept for his sons. The letters from Susie and Holly, as well as the eulogy by Wheldons best man, would be a powerful addition. Adrian Sussmann, the best man, talked about how Dan met Susie, who was a public relations representative for Wheldons racing sponsor, and how they kept their relationship secret for so long. He spoke about how Wheldon went from the “Dream Team” at Andretti, which also included Franchitti, Kanaan and Byran Herta, to the “Little Team That Could,” the one-car team Herta put together last spring that Wheldon drove to victory in the Indy 500 in May. “It was a finish that even Hollywood couldnt have written,” Sussmann said. Sussmann joked about Wheldons obsession to be organized, his pursuit of perfection that made everyone around him better, how he felt that he never gave a bad interview and that he was the rock of the family. “His happiness came from the fact that he had everything in life that money cant buy,” Sussmann said. Susies letter recalled meeting Dan at a photo shoot in 2003, when she asked the “cocky and stylish” driver what his backup plan was if racing didnt work out. “I dont have one,” Wheldon told her. “I never met anyone who believes in themselves as much as you do,” she wrote in the letter. She said Dan had equal passion for racing as he did his family. She promised that their boys — she called them Wheldons “greatest accomplishment” — will grow up knowing what a loving father he was. “I can still feel your love around me,” she wrote. “Not even death can take that away.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

MONTREAL - All things considered, Chelsea Carey would rather be in Sochi, Russia. But qualifying for her first Scotties Tournament of Hearts after years of falling short in tough Manitoba provincial championships is as good as consolation prizes get for the 29-year-old from Winnipegs Fort Rouge Curling Club. And Carey is making the most of it, taking her record to 7-1 after an 8-4 victory over New Brunswicks Andrea Crawford (5-4) on Wednesday night. Earlier, the Carey rink trounced Quebecs Allison Ross (1-8) by 15-3. The 15 points tied the Scotties record set in 1989, when Alberta beat Newfoundland 15-6. Carey reached the Manitoba finals twice, losing in 2011 to Cathy Overton-Clapham and in 2012 to Jennifer Jones, the four-time Scotties champion who will represent Canada at the 2014 Winter Games. “We wanted to be here badly and lost a couple of heartbreakers and thats no fun, but it wasnt the only thing for us,” said Carey. “The (Olympic) trials was our first goal and this was our second goal.” Her only loss so far was an 8-3 setback this week to defending champion Rachel Homans seemingly unstoppable Canada team. Homans Ottawa foursome extended its unbeaten string to eight games with a 9-4 victory over Prince Edward Islands Kim Dolan. They have outscored their opponents 62-26 and have yet to play a full 10 ends. Saskatchewans Stefanie Lawton (7-1) posted an 8-6 win over Nova Scotia (3-6) and Ontarios Allison Flaxey (3-5) completed a sweep of her sides two games on Wednesday with a 12-2 victory over the Yukons Sarah Koltun (1-8). Flaxey had the upset of the day in the afternoon draw with a 6-5 win over Albertas Val Sweeting (6-3). Carey put together her team with lead Lindsay Titheridge, second Kristen Foster and third Kristy McDonald specifically to take a shot at the Olympics. The rink has been among Canadas best for a few years, winning often in national and regional events, and did well enough to earn an invitation to the Canadian Olympic trials in Winnipeg. When that dream died with a fourth-place finish, Carey admits it was tough to find the energy to go to last months provincial championship, let alone win it. “I took a week off and didnt throw,” she said. "I forced myself to go back, but I wanted no part of it. “I was just going through the motions. It took a long time to get our heads back there, but wed played in a lot of provincials before and we knew going into the trials that it was something wed have to transition to. It wasnt easy, but we did a good enough job to pull off the win there.” Once she got her Manitoba team jacket and got to Montreal, she was thrilled to finally have a chance to represent her province at the Scotties. On the team website, Carey describes herself as “Unemployed, AKA Starving Curler.” She worked as a sales representative for a mattress company for six years, but was finally told to choose between curling and her job. “It was the year of the trials and Im not going to pick that job over curling,” she said. "My initial thought was to get a new job, but with trials in December its hard to start a new job and say I need six weeks of holidays. “Ive been unemployed since then. It will have to change after this because I cant pay my bills.” Manitobas win over Quebec had some wondering if curling needs a mercy rule. It was Quebecs worst beating since a 13-1 setback to Alberta in 1991. A rule obliges teams to play at least eight ends no matter how badly theyre trailing. “Im not so sure I believe in the eight-end rule,” said Manitobas McDonald. "If things arent going well, the other team should be able to get out when they feel its time. “Theyre a good team. Theyre much better than that. But theyre just having a tough go. When things go sour, they go sour.” Ross had plenty of support among the 1,790 spectators at the Maurice Richard Arena, but her squad has been off the target consistently all week. She was also missing second Brittany ORourke to the flu bug that has sidelined several players and officials during the week. “Todays game was tough for sure,” said Ross, whose team also lost 6-5 to B.C. in the morning draw. “We didnt play well at all.” Flaxey turned around what had been a dismal week with her win over Alberta. Ontario held off a charge that saw Alberta score two in the ninth end. She took out Sweetings stone on the button in the 10th to prevent a steal and secure the victory. “We havent been playing as well as we could have all week,” said Flaxey, the 2001 Manitoba junior champion now based out of Listowel, Ont. “To show that we are a good, solid team and that we belong with the favourites and can play with the favourites, it shows people why were here.” Ontario is all but eliminated from playoff contention, but can still play the role of spoiler with three round-robin games remaining, including a match Thursday afternoon with Manitoba. “Its all we have left so youve got to love doing it,” said Flaxey. “Weve got a couple of tough ones left and hopefully we can at least shake things up.” The afternoon draw saw Homan put up a 7-3 victory over British Columbia (5-4). Homan has a shot at being the first skip to go undefeated in the tournament since B.C.s Linda Moore in 1985. Jennifer Jones went undefeated in the round robin last year but lost to Homan in the final. “Im confident we can win the rest of our games,” said Homan. "You have to be confident in your abilities. “You put in the practice and the hours and the work. I believe 100 per cent in our team. Were in a good spot now and we have to keep playing the way were playing.” Lawton downed Newfoundlands Heather Strong (4-4) by 7-3. Other early matches saw Alberta top Newfoundland 9-5, New Brunswick beat P.E.I. 9-6 and Nova Scotia down Yukon 7-3. . The game can be heard live on TSN Radio 690 at 7pm et. A playoff team in each of the past two seasons, the Senators have struggled with consistency so far in 2013-14 and currently are sitting sixth in the Atlantic Division with 43 points. However, wins in three straight and four of the last five games gives hope that Ottawa is starting to find its groove. The Senators won all three games on their recent homestand and claimed those victories by a total margin of four goals. Ottawa hopes to stay hot on Saturday when it kicks off a four-game road trip in Montreal, but the Sens are just 7-8-3 as the guest this season and have dropped four straight away from Canadas capital city. Ottawa recorded a 4-3 regulation win over Winnipeg in the finale of its homestand on Thursday. Mika Zibanejad posted a goal and an assist to help the Senators notch the close victory at Canadian Tire Centre. Milan Michalek, Zack Smith and Clarke MacArthur also had goals for the Senators, while Craig Anderson stopped 32 shots in the win. “I thought it was a competitive game up and down the rink and thats the way I thought it would be,” said Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean. “We found a way to win the game and thats what is moost important.dddddddddddd” The Sens have won their last three games without captain Jason Spezza in the lineup and the veteran forward expects to miss a fourth straight tilt on Saturday. Ottawa hasnt won four in a row since April 11-18 of last season and a victory could be difficult to come by on Saturday, as the Sens have lost four straight and five of their last six tilts in Montreal. The Sens have won two of the past three encounters with the Canadiens overall and Ottawa recorded a 4-1 home victory when the clubs met for the first of five matchups this season on Nov. 7. Montreal won Thursday night in Dallas, halting a two-game slide to complete a six-game road trip with a 3-2-1 mark. Lars Eller scored the winner in the third period to help the Canadiens take down the Stars, 6-4. Max Pacioretty had two goals and two assists, while P.K. Subban added a goal and three assists for the Habs. Carey Price gave up four goals on 32 shots. “Thats what we need. Weve been struggling scoring goals,” said Pacioretty. “Weve been struggling trying to put 60 minutes together. We came out slow but we found a way to bounce back after a bad start. Carey (Price) bailed us out early in the game and I think we took it from there.” The Canadiens are now home for two straight and they will host Florida on Monday. Montreal has identical 12-7-2 records at both home and on the road this season. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Jets have signed goaltender Michael Hutchinson to a US$1.15-million, two-year contract. Hutchinson, a 24-year-old restricted free agent, will count $575,000 against the salary cap each season if he remains in the NHL. The Barrie, Ont., native could be Ondrej Pavelecs backup next season if the Jets dont add a veteran. Parmelee hit a game-ending shot in the ninth inning and the Minnesota Twins overcame David Ortizs big night to beat the Boston Red Sox 8-6 on Tuesday.TORONTO – With just over seven seconds left on the clock and Fridays game hanging in the balance, a sellout Air Canada Centre crowd rose to their feet, holding their breath in anticipation. Theyve been holding their breath for six years now, but finally they can exhale. As Celtics forward Jared Sullinger forced up a wild, off-balance runner, the building erupted. It was official. The Raptors are heading back to the post-season. “We made it,” shouted Amir Johnson repeatedly as the media filtered into Torontos locker room. “Its a satisfying, kind of overwhelming feeling,” he described, following his teams 105-103 victory over Boston, officially snapping the Raptor five-year playoff drought. “Its been six years since this team, this organization made it to the playoffs. This team has worked so hard. We deserved it. Weve been playing our butts off, playing through injuries. Weve had our ups and downs.” “Weve made it.” Not lost on the team was the fact that they stole a game, their 41st victory of the season, that probably shouldnt have come down to the final possession. Down by four with under three minutes to play, it looked like the Raptors would have to hope for a New York Knicks loss later in the evening or wait until Sunday to punch their ticket to the playoffs. Theyve been resilient all year, so why wouldnt they be now? First DeMar DeRozan drained a fadeaway jumper, then Johnson hit the game-winning put-back layup. “It was fitting,” Dwane Casey said. DeRozan and Johnson, the teams longest tenured players, were responsible for Torontos final four points. For them, this moment was a little sweeter. “It means a lot, honestly, man,” said DeRozan, the Raptors fifth-year guard, who will make his post-season debut next month. “Especially for me and Amir and what weve been through here with the tough seasons, through the ups and downs and the struggles. We stuck with it.” The only player in the building that could give a firsthand account of the Raptors last playoff experience – a five-game, first round defeat at the hands of the Orlando Magic in 2007-08 – was Celtics forward Kris Humphries. Only four other players from that team are currently on an NBA roster, but DeRozan and Johnson – who arrived the year after – have both been in Toronto long enough to appreciate what a night like this means to the franchise, the city and the Raptors long-suffering fan base. “It was all worth it,” said DeRozan. “These fans stuck behind us every single day and theyre going to continue to do so. Thats the reason why we work extremely hard. Our fans definitely push us.” Of course, it was just a formality. It was inevitable, only a matter of time. Toronto wasnt going to go winless in its remaining games, just like the Knicks were not going to run the table the rest of the way. Still, they have refused to count their chickens before they hatched and for that you can credit the humility and focus of their head coach. Moments after the win, a loud chorus of applause could be heard from outside the teams locker room. Finally, they could celebrate, albeit behind closed doors. Even Casey, who wouldnt pat himself on the back and likely never will, found a way to indulge in what the evening represented. “Were excited about it,” he admitted. “My hat is off to all the guys whove come through here,” said Casey, crediting MLSE chairman Larry Tanenbaum as well as former general manager Bryan Colangelo for their contributions to the process. “To DeMar DeRozan [and] Amir Johnson, who have been through it all and for the fans, the fans for understanding and being patient. I know they didnt see the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but its a process. You dont build Rome overnight in this league. Is very difficult to do. You talk about rebuilding, its a hard gig.” The Raptors have surpassed every rationaal expectation, going 35-19 since the trade of Rudy Gay in early December.dddddddddddd Its been a season of firsts for a franchise on the cusp of its 20th birthday, a franchise many pundits wrote off for dead after selling off its highest-paid player. “Everybody who writes something on a piece of paper isnt always right, thats how I look at it,” said DeRozan, the first-time All-Star. Hes right. He and his team have proven a lot of people wrong. As the Celtics made their run, cutting their deficit – once 14 – down and ultimately taking the lead, DeRozan came through yet again. With Kyle Lowry slowed by an ankle injury he sustained in the first half, DeRozan picked him up and scored 24 of his game-high 30 points in the final 24 minutes. 16 of his 27 career 30-point games have come this season. With 10 games remaining and their spot in the pos-tseason locked up, the team can shift its attention to seeding but most importantly, going into the playoffs healthy and with momentum. “We cant be satisfied,” Casey repeated, with his team moving into soul possession of the third seed following the Chicago Bulls loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday. “We still want to continue on and weve still got to get better.” Lowrys injury scare With three minutes to go in the second quarter, Lowry limped to the locker room after turning his right ankle while back-pedaling to get back on defence. After being examined by the medical staff, the Raptor point guard and most important player was able to return, starting the second half with his ankle taped up. As per usual, Lowry shrugged off whatever pain he was in after the win. “Im a little sore, but Im fine,” he said after scoring nine points in 33 minutes. “Im okay. Good to go.” Revenge of the second unit Naturally, Casey was frustrated with his under-performing bench after they were outscored 51-7 in Boston on Wednesday. “I challenged them before the game,” said the Raptors coach. “I got on them about their productivity or lack thereof in the Boston game. I challenged them. I said, Look, guys want playing time, when the opportunity comes, youve got to do something, whether its defence, knocking somebody down, taking a charge, whatever. And they came through.” Greivis Vasquez, who scored all seven of the benchs points on Wednesday, led the teams reserves with 15, but Chuck Hayes and John Salmons were also productive on both ends of the floor. Combined, the three former Kings – along with Tyler Hansbrough, who logged five minutes – totalled 28 points on the night. Patterson nearing a return Although he missed his 12th straight game, Patrick Patterson has been making progress and appears to be on the verge of returning from his right elbow injury. Although the Raptors havent had much practice time to get Patterson back up to speed – a concern Casey expressed before Fridays game – the Raptors forward has been able to participate in smaller, three-on-three scrimmages since being cleared for contact earlier this week. “[His] conditioning is probably going to be step behind a little bit,” Casey acknowledged. “Its not going to be where he was before stepping away, so thats going to be expected. Thats why now we need to kind of get him back in rhythm and with the lack of practice time its going to have to be in a game situation.” Patterson could be back in uniform this weekend in Florida, as the Raptors begin a back-to-back set with the Magic on Sunday before visiting the Heat Monday evening. The stat With their 41st win of the season, the Raptors secured a .500 record for the sixth time in franchise history and first since 2007-08, the last year they qualified for the playoffs. The quote “My grandmother called,” Johnson told the media after his team clinched a spot in the playoffs. “She said that she was proud.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

This is a very good team. I know they didnt rise to the challenge of playoff urgency last year but their statistical success was extreme. And yes, there is a degree of truth that statistics dont always convey the whole picture, but they are accurate indicators of what has improved and what the priority is to improve. For the Stampeders, there is little to find a discouraging word about. Here are the categories of pure football efficiency that the Stampeders finished first in compared to the other eight teams in the league last year: points scored, 30 per game; net offense, 383 per game; rushing yards, 141 per game; fewest quarterback sacks allowed; best second to first conversion rate; most quarterback sacks on defence; fewest giveaways, only 27 over 18 games; and tied with the Roughriders with the best takeaway/giveaway ratio at +19. Really, the only two areas of concern are punt and kick returns and red zone defence in which Calgary finished seventh best. This is a very good team. Quarterback will be an interesting battle. It should be a battle between the youth and arm skill of Bo Levi Mitchell and the intensity with determination of Drew Tate. Mitchell has youth on his side, Tate has the experience; and for Tate a surprising amount of experience. This is now his eighth year in the league and now is the time, but I said that at this time last year too. They are different types of quarterbacks and personalities. Tate is kind of confrontational and aggressive while Mitchell is more smooth and mellow, I would say. Both do work well under pressure and both have excellent futures. Still, it will be very interesting to see who wins the job and if they can keep it for 18 games. Its a nice problem to have but a difficult decision to make between the two. With quarterback depth a unique luxury and in some ways taken care of, the next strength is kicking. You can make an easy argument that no CFL team has a better combo punter/kicker than Rob Maver and Rene Parades. Especially in the field goal kicking, the streak they had last season was both entertaining and game-changing. There will come a day where some field goal kicker makes every kick, does not miss one over the course of the season. The art of kicking has developed into a science more than ever before and a calm concentrated demeanor is more significant than ever before. Yes, its a lofty goal but obtainable also attainable. Maybe in Calgary. Also interesting outside of the priority of a great quarterback and the critical importance of good kickers is depth at running back. With Jon Cornish, Martell Mallett and Jock Sanders there are now three good ones. Of the three, the best may be Sanders, especially if he returns punts and kicks replacing Larry Taylor. Calgary finished fifth best in both punt and kick returns so there is room for improvement. By no means was Taylor the sole issue as a returner is as good as his blocking, especially initially. Still, with Sanders you have acceleration in the excess and a quality running back who can start. The Roughriders will miss Kory Sheets, Keith Shologon, and Craig Butler, but losing Sanders to their most direct competition is a double issue. Evaluating personnel is subjective in that how one person may see the present ability of one player or their potential is always different than another. But right now the combination of 24 starters and key depth contributors in Calgary has no clear superior. It may not be of obvious significance right now, but wait until October and November. And that player that in June you never thought would be a starter responds as one when he has to, it can change everything. I know for the third time, the Calgary Stampeders are a very good team. Among teams moving up, the Oakland As moved from 13 to 10 with seven wins in the last eight games and ace starter Bartolo Colon returning from the disabled list. The Kansas City Royals, 7-2 in their last nine games and with a rotation boosted by young lefty Danny Duffy, are up from 15 to 12. Moving from 23 to 19,, the L.ddddddddddddA. Losing ground, the St. Louis Cardinals slip from three to six after losing four of five while the Tampa Bay Rays, losing eight of nine, slipped from four to nine. Six losses in seven games knocks the Cleveland Indians down from 11 to 15. Losing ace starter Matt Harvey hammered the New York Mets, down from 22 to 29 on the devastating news that Harvey could be on his way to having Tommy John surgery. Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week they discuss Kyle Lowrys All-Star blessing, Coach Q, unheralded undraftees and leaving the NFL playoffs alone. Cathal Kelly, Toronto Star: My thumb is up to the 14 NBA coaches who decided this week that raptor Kyle Lowry doesnt deserve to be on the All-Star team. Theyre wrong, of course. Badly wrong. According to reports, the player who pipped Lowry for the last bench spot was Brooklyn Nets forward Joe Johnson. Lowry is out-averaging Johnson in every statistical category – including rebounds – and Johnson is seven inches taller. In making this mistake, however, those coaches have done Raptors fans a huge service. From here until the end of the season, Toronto not only has the best point guard in the East, they now have the most motivated point guard in the East. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is up to Joel Quenneville of the Chicago Blackhawks, who this week moved up to No. 3 on the all-time list of coaching victories in the National Hockey League. Its impressive enough to make the top three. Its even more impressive when the only coaches ahead of you in wins are named Scotty Bowman and Al Arbour. Quenneville, for some reason, doesnt get a whole lot of attention, doesnt make a lot of headlines, rarely gets mentioned for coach of the year, which he won once more than a decade ago. But here he is behind a nine-time Stanley Cup champion and a four-time Cup winner. And nobody else. Yeah, hes an all-time great. And when have we ever said that about Joel Quenneville? Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is up to Edmonton goalie Ben Scrivens, for impenetrability. Scrivens stopped a record 59 shots in a shutout of the Sharks, a dash of good news in a city unaccustomed to seeing a goalie make 59 saves in a week. Scrivens stellar game underscored the notion that goalies dont need pedigree. Undrafted out of Cornell, Scrivens once played in the East Coast Hockey League. Ex-Calgary Hitman netminder Martin Jones of the Los Angeles Kings, also was undrafted and played in the Coast as did the Rangers Cam Talbot, out of the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Another thing they have in common: among NHL goalies with at least 12 starts, they are one-two-three in save percentage. Dave Hodge, TSN: My thumb is down to the likelihood that the NFL playoffs will be expanded to include 14 teams, up by two from the current 12. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones delivers the argument for more playoff teams this way: “How exciting is it for fans of a .500 team to see that team in the playoffs with a chance to win the Super Bowl?” Well, heres whats more exciting – two teams like Denver and Seattle, with 13-3 records, showing off their season-long excellence at the Super Bowl. Jerry Jones needs to improve his team, not the League. But the guy in charge of the league, Roger Goodell, supports the idea of more playoff teams, thus more playoff games – get ready for wild-card “week”. cheap nfl jerseys . — Amid stories about Jeremy Lin and the upcoming all-star game, the Detroit Pistons have quietly become one of the hottest teams in the NBA. Tuukka Rask, Boston (4) – Explosive, perfect positioning and great rebound control for all five games that led to this series being clinched. http://www.cheapjerseyssafe.com/. — Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was arrested outside Kansas City over the weekend on charges of speeding and possessing marijuana, throwing his status for a pivotal AFC West showdown against the Denver Broncos into question. jerseys from china . The Nets continued their winning ways Tuesday by sweeping a back-to-back set for the first time this season, beating the Orlando Magic 101-90 a night after routing the crosstown rival New York Knicks. cheap jerseys . The IceHogs scored three unanswered goals, capped by Jeremy Morins third-period goal, to beat the Marlies 3-2 in American Hockey League play Wednesday. Is the end of the road approaching for Canadas greatest basketball player? According to veteran basketball columnist Peter Vecsey, Lakers guard Steve Nash is close to retirement. The former New York Post columnist and NBA TV analyst tweeted out the following statement early Tuesday morning: “Im hearing Nashs pain is forcing him 2 seriously consider calling it a career. Hed still get $ this yr & next & LAd get cap relief next.” The 39-year-old Nash is sidelined indefinitely with a back injury and has been limited to just six games so far in the 2013-14 NBA season, averaging just 22.5 minutes-per-game. Lakers head coach Mike DAntoni spoke out last week about rumours of Nashs retirement, trying to temper the situation to the Los Angeles Times. “Theres always going to be a debate but were not going to debate it, talk about it,” DAntoni told the Times last Tuesday. “Hes going to try to gget ready, hes going to try to play and were going to try to win.ddddddddddddIts really simple for us. Its not real difficult.” Still, Nashs time in Los Angeles has not been up to the lofty standards he set during his MVP years with the Phoenix Suns, as the Victoria Native appeared in just 50 games for the Lakers in 2012-13 posting a 12.7 points-per-game average (his second-lowest total since 1999-2000) and 6.7 assists per game (his lowest total over that span). Nash has three years remaining on his contract including the current NBA season, worth a total of just over $28.3 million. Winning back-to-back MVP Awards in 2004-05 and 2005-06, Nash has put together a Hall of Fame-worthy career. He is a veteran of 18 NBA seasons with the Lakers, Suns and Dallas Mavericks and has been selected to 8 NBA All-Star Games, averaging 14.3 PPG, 8.5 APG with a career free throw percentage of 90.4 per cent. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry Fraser wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hey Kerry, During a recent Ottawa 67s game (Sun, Feb. 19 vs Erie Otters), a 67s player was handed a 10-minute misconduct for inciting. I had never heard of that one before so I read up on that rule. (iii) Any player who, after warning by the Referee, persists in any course of conduct (including threatening or abusive language or gestures or similar actions) designed to incite an opponent into incurring a penalty. To me, this penalty could be called more frequently and may also help stop some of the stupid stuff that leads to fights. How often do we see players standing there face to face shaking their gloves waiting for the opposing player to drop their gloves first in an attempt to induce the instigator? How often does a “tough guy” taunt an opposing player saying, “Lets go!” over and over again? I had a discussion about the Instigator rule and my opinion was that the Instigator should be called on the player who really instigates the fight not the one that drops their gloves first…a.k.a guys like Sean Avery yapping and trying to get under another players skin to get them to drop the gloves and get the penalty. Now that I am more aware of this inciting rule, I think the application of this rule on a more regular basis would go a long way towards stopping the stupid crap that leads to the dirty plays and needless fights. Your thoughts? Terry Benson,Ottawa Terry: The instigator question answered in yesterdays column provides a perfect segue to options the referee has at his disposal in order to control scrums and deal with players that attempt to incite an opponent. As I wrote, heading into Wednesdays games 791 fighting majors had been assessed. While it normally takes two to tango, due to the uneven number it would appear that one pugilist found an unwilling dance partner? In approximately 395 fights only 30 instigators were identified with the appropriate penalty (which includes 10 minute misconduct.) The lack of enforcement of the instigator in several obvious cases that we have all observed has made this rule all but obsolete. In most cases a player that utilizes a good, solid body check has to end up fighting to defend himself in an attack that comes from a teammate of the player he legally body checked. This will continue until the appropriate instigator penalties are applied on a consistent basis. Terry, you correctly quote Rule 75.4 iii) – Misconduct to deal with a player that attempts to incite an opponent. This penalty is a subsection of Rule 75 – Unsportsmanlike Conduct designed to prevent disorderly conduct by players and non-playing personnel (coaches, trainers, managers.) In the application of this rule there is generally a progression from the minor penalty to the next step which is the assessment of a 10-minute misconduct. The thought process here is that a minor penalty hurts the team and acts as better deterrent than just putting a guy in the box for 10 minutes for being a knuckle head! In most cases the team wont miss him anyway. The first application should be Rule 75.2 i) Any identifiable player who uses obscene, profane or abusive language or gestures directed at any person. That is not to say that the referee is handcuffed into assessing the minor penalty first (or applying the minor and/or misconduct) but it is and should be more standard operating procedure than the exception. Late in a game the situation might arise where the referee deems it appropriate to remove a player from the ice (to the dressing room) to keep the peace and avoid an unwanted situation. You might recall referee Dan ORourke remove big John Scott from the game in Chicago with a couple of minutes remaining during a playoff game against Vancouver. Scott came out for an end zone faceoff with a Canuck victory secured. Big John wasnt sent out to tie or win the game and proceeded to chirp and incite the visitors before the puck was dropped. ORourke wisely took the matters into his own hands and send Scott to the showers with a misconduct penalty for inciting before the puck was dropped. There was no need to rub salt in the Hawks feathers by assessing the minor penalty as well. The situation called for action by the referee and he stepped up and took control. On many occasions over my career, when players joined in scrums after the whistle, I went to both benches and informed the coaches that any further scrums would result in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to one player and one player only. (No four on four would result.) I continued by telling them that it might be their player or the other team player that would be assessed the penalty so I would prefer if they took control of their players before I had to lay the hammer down. Once I made the trip to the bench I made good on my promise if the coach was unable to convey my message to his players. The best element of control is the fear a player or team has knowing that the referee will call a penalty that will put a team shorthanded not lets roll the dice because maybe he will call it; maybe he wont. Remember the snowing of the goalie in the playoffs last season. That was a form of inciting and nothing good would result. It should have been dealt with by the referees the first time it happened with a warning issued to the player and the coach. If it happened again an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty would result. Instead it persisted from one end of the ice to the other. Finally in game 5 & 6 of the series Hockey Ops publicly stated the referees would address the situation. The same thing occurred with embellishment. You dont wait until the late stages of a series to address something that began early and should have been taken care of at that time. When Sean Avery taunted Martin Brodeur with his stick waving dance we didnt need to create a new rule to deal with that situation. Rule 75 was already in place and should have been assessed to squash the circus that followed. When a player sends a “rifle shot” with his stick after a goal to taunt or incite the goalie, rule 75 is at the refs disposal. During my career I dealt with some of the best/worst for getting under the skin of their opponents; Matthew Barnaby, Tyson Nash, Claude Lemieux and the list goes on. The one thing these guys feared most was going to the penalty box by themselves; more importantly by putting their team down a man with a minor penalty instead of a misconduct for trash talking and taunting. One night in a scrum I said to Barney, “Do you want two minutes?” He replied, “NO just give me 10.” I said, “Keep it up and Ill give you both – your team will definitely be on the PK.” That ended the scrum. The last thing he wanted was to put his team a man down. He was a team player first. Memo to refs: rely on the assets that the rules provide you. Feel the pulse and heartbeat of the game to know when it is appropriate to apply those assets. The fear is in what you might apply – not in what you wont! ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Jim Bob Cooter has been hired as quarterbacks coach for the Detroit Lions. Detroit officially announced the move Monday. Cooter was an offensive assistant for the staff that led Denver to an AFC championship last season. He had previously worked for the Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts. Detroit has been putting together a new staff under Jim Caldwell, who replaced fired coach Jim Schwartz. With Cooter on the staff, the Broncos ranked first last season in total offensive yards per game (465.3), total touchdowns (76) and points per game (37.9). Cooter was on Caldwells staff in Indianapolis when the Colts reached the 2010 Super Bowl. On Thursday night in Toronto the CFL Rules Committee will vote on whether or not defensive pass interference (DPI) should be the first judgment penalty in football to be subject to video review. If the idea is passed in that meeting, it will then be presented to the leagues Board of Governors, who ultimately has the final say. Defensive pass interference was one of 13 discussion points when the Rules Committee met on Wednesday but, not surprisingly, DPI was the topic that dominated the meeting, and if the unofficial show of hands was any indication, this rule change proposal will in fact be passed and presented to the Board. It was not unanimous, but the large majority is in favour of adding defensive pass interference to the plays that will be challengeable in the 2014 season. Again the majority of football people on the Rules Committee want this to happen. To give some context, Wednesdays meeting was not the first time this rule proposal was presented to the group; this is a discussion that started in July of last year. That didnt however, limit what was an interesting debate on what, as the head of officials Glen Johnson said, would be a rule change that, "is more than innovative. In the world of officiating, for all sports, its revolutionary.” The proposal on the table, as written in Wednesdays agenda is, "to allow coaches to challenge both called and potential defensive pass interference fouls. A team would be able to use any and all of its coaches challenges (and their potential third earned challenge on a called DPI foul or a potential non-called DPI foul up to the three minute warning of the fourth quarter. This challenge would be carried out using the current replay rules and protocols just as they would for any other challengeable aspect of a play. In the last three minutes of the game, and in overtime, DPI would not be automatically reviewed by the command centre as all the current challengeable calls are now. It was a major part of the discussion on Wednesday, but in the last three minutes the proposal currently reads, “if a team has both timeouts and unused coaches challenges remaining at the three minute warning of the fourth quarter, they may now challenge a called DPI foul or a potential non-called DPI foul once in this time period. If they are successful in their challenge they will retain their timeout, and if unsuccessful, they will lose their timeout.” The three minute warning aspect of the rule change was debated in the meeting on Wednesday and still may be amended; however, it doesnt look like it will be an issue that stops the proposal from moving to the next level. Also, if youre wondering about offensive pass interference, it is not part of this proposal because it is not a point of foul penalty. If offensive pass interference is committed, it is a ten-yard penalty from the line of scrimmage. If defensive pass interference occurs, the ball is placed where the foul happened, conceivably as much as a 30- to 50-yard penalty, and or, put the ball on the one-yard line if the foul occurs in the end zone. Every team in the league, the officials, and the CFLPA are represented in the Rules Committee, which is a group that includes some of the top football minds in our games history; and the majority of them think it is time to expand the use of video review. Again, it was an unofficial show of hands but, unless something changes on Thursday night, the rule proposal to make defensive pass interference the first reviewable judgment penalty in the history of football will be passed and put in the hands of the Board of Governors. Sluman and Funk finished with a 6-under 48 at rainy Top of the Rock, the first par-3 course used in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event, to beat Jay Haas and Peter Jacobsen by a stroke. Sluman holed a 6-foot par putt for the victory on the final hole. “For some reason Ive always done well in these team-type events,” Sluman said. “I dont know what it is.” The winners finished at 20-under 159. They opened with an 11-under 61 in better-ball play on the regulation Buffalo Ridge course and had a 50 on Saturday on the par-3 layout. Sluman also won last year, teaming with Brad Faxon in Savannah, Georgia. “Maybe Ive got a good eye for partners,” Sluman said. Funk was quick to return the complement. “Hes the common denominator,” Funk said. Sluman won for the sixth time on the Champions Tour, and Funk for the ninth. Haas and Jacobsen, the second-round leaders, shot 50. Haas missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole of the day. “Im disappointed because I hit a beautiful iron in there and it was as easy a putt as you can get, straight up the hill, and I just pulled it a little bit,” Haas said. "Were mixed emotions right now. Were very happy to have finished second, but we had an opportunity. You just dont get that many, so its nice to take advantage of them when you do. Sluman and Funk had a 1-under 26 in the opening alternate-shot nine and cllosed with a 5-under 22 in the best-ball nine.dddddddddddd “It seemed like they kept hitting it to three feet. The first five or six holes they hit it to three feet and made birdie,” Jacobsen said. “Youre not going to get more clutch than those two guys.” Craig Stadler and Kirk Triplett closed with a 52 to finish third at 14 under, the Kentucky duo of Russ Cochran and Kenny Perry was 13 under after a 49. In the nine-hole Legends finale, Colbert and Thorpe had a 4-under 23 in better-ball play for a three-stroke victory over Bruce Fleisher and Larry Nelson. Colbert and Thorpe finished at 11 under for 45 holes. Colbert won the then-Demaret Division for players 70 and older, teaming with Bob Murphy. “I couldnt ask for a better partner because I know hes a fighter,” Thorpe said. “This guys got so much fire, so much fight in him.” Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player were fifth at 5 under. “I think Gary played reasonably well. I didnt,” Nicklaus said. “I got worn out yesterday and I didnt play very well and I played very poorly today. I dont think we played particularly well in total. We felt like we could both play better than that, but we just didnt.” Sluman and Funk each earned $230,000, and Colbert and Thorpe got $60,000 each. “The tournament was a lot of fun,” Funk said. “It was just a real treat. It turned out to be really fun and a real treat to play this par 3. LONDON — Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal — and sometimes both — appeared in all 10 Wimbledon finals from 2003-12, combining to claim nine of those titles. Neither made it that far in 2013. Not even close. Federer lost his second match at the All England Club. Nadal exited in the first round, a year after bowing out in the second. With play at Wimbledon starting Monday, Federer and Nadal are eager to return to the heights they once reached with regularity at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. They sound certain that they are prepared to fare better than 12 months ago — and, as might be expected from a seven-time champion, Federer came right out and called himself “a contender.” “I feel like, yeah, if things click here, I should be able to win the tournament,” Federer said Saturday. “I feel I have a very good chance again this year. I hope to utilize my fitness, the amount of matches Ive played this year,” he added. “So Im really coming in with a much better feeling.” Federer tuned up for Wimbledon, where he is seeded fourth, by winning a title on grass at Halle, Germany, last weekend. That showing gave Federer all the assurance he needed that his game is in prime form at the moment, especially on the slick surface he dominated for a decade. Last season, Federer explained, there were “certain things I wanted to do, but I couldnt figure out or couldnt do it.” “This year,” he continued, “I feel all the options are there. Return, serve, serve and volley, come in, my backhand — everything is working to my liking. For that reason, I feel Im a bit more relaxed mentally, because I know it is there. I clearly want to do better than last year, theres no doubt about it.” So does the second-seeded Nadal, of course. He reached five Wimbledon finals and earned a pair of trophies, including by edging Federer 9-7 in the fifth set in 2008. They met in three consecutive title matches at the All England Club from 2006-08, and could meet in the semifinals this year. First things first, though. Nadal has a test in the first round against big-hitting Martin Klizan, then could face Lukas Rosol, the man who stunned the Spaniard in 2012s second round. The third round could bring a challenge from tough server Ivo Karlovic. For now, Nadal is most pleased with the state of his left knee, which acted up during his 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8), 6-4 loss in 2013 to 135th-ranked Steve Darcis, saying it “hurts less this year than last year.” Thats allowed Nadal to put in longer hours than usual on the practice courts this week, a key as the nine-time French Open champion transitions from clay to grass, on which he has lost three matches in a row. A year ago at Wimbledon, a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-5, 7-6 (5) loss to 116th-ranked Sergiy Stakhovsky ended Federers streak of getting at least to the quarterfinals at 36 consecutive major tournaments. It was Federers earliest Grand Slam defeat since May 2003. Somber that day, at least Federer can joke about it now. He said that when he ran into Stakhovsky on Friday, they kidded around about how they could only meet in the final this year, because they were drawn into opposite sides of the bracket. “So its all good for both of us,” Federer said, then paused before delivering the punch line: “For me, at least.” . PAUL, Minn.ST. LOUIS – A company tied to St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke has purchased a prime piece of land in the Los Angeles area amid speculation the NFL franchise is considering a return to the city it left for the Midwest nearly two decades ago. Team officials on Friday provided a written statement confirming the recent purchase of a 60-acre site in Inglewood, Calif., adjacent to the shuttered Hollywood Park racetrack. The Los Angeles Times first reported the purchase. “As real estate developers, the Kroenke Organizations are involved in numerous real estate deals across the country and North America,” the statement said. “While we can confirm media reports that we recently purchased land in Inglewood, as a private company we dont typically discuss our plans for commercial or residential investments. We have yet to decide what we are going to do with the property but we will look at all options, as we do with all of our properties.” The property is three miles east of Los Angeles International Airport runways and sprawls between the newly renovated Forum concert venue, former home of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Hollywood Park, which closed Dec. 22 after 75 years of horse racing. The latter 260-acre site is slated for development of 3,000 housing units, commercial space and parks. The land was previously owned by Wal-Mart, which hoped to build a superstore there but could not win local voter approval for the project. Kroenke is a former Wal-Mart board member who is married to the daughter of company co-founder Bud Walton and continues to build shopping centres for the retailer. Los Angeles has lacked an NFL team since both the Rams and Raiders left in 1994. The Rams can break their 30-year lease in St. Louis after the 2014 season — a decade early — but have said little about their plans. The Rams lease requires the Edward Jones Dome to remain among the top quarter of the 32 NFL stadiums, based on various criteria. The St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission, which manages the dome, last year offered a $124 million improvement plan that included a bigger scoreboard and better club seating, with the Rams paying slightly more half those costs. The team countered with a far more ambitious proposal tthat called for a new roof with a sliding panel and a bevy of improvements that would keep the city convention centre in the dome closed for three years.dddddddddddd City leaders rejected $700 million in publicly funded upgrades sought by the team. Speaking in New York before Sundays Super Bowl, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league was informed of the Kroenke purchase and noted that any stadium development plan would require approval from two-thirds of the NFLs 32 owners. “Were aware of it,” Goodell said. “There are no plans, to my knowledge, of a stadium development. Anything that would require a stadium development would require multiple votes of the membership.” Goodell cautioned against “overreacting” to the Kroenke land purchase, saying “we should make sure we do whats necessary to continue to support the team locally, which the fans have done in St. Louis. And make sure we can do whatever we can to make sure that team is successful in the St. Louis market.” Patriots owner Robert Kraft said he thinks “its unfortunate that a generation of fans have grown up without” a team in Los Angeles. “We definitely want a team in L.A. … We need to make sure we have the right owner and the right facility, and until at least 24 owners feel that, we wont have it,” Kraft said in New York. “Just personally, I would like to see a team in L.A. as soon as possible.” Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has taken over negotiations with the Rams and Kroenke after arbitration between the team, the commission and the stadium authority failed. James Shrewsbury, chairman of the St. Louis Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority, which owns the downtown dome, referred questions about the Los Angeles purchase to the governor. “Its hard to comment on it since we dont know what his purpose is,” Shrewsbury said, referring to Kroenke, who could not be reached for comment. “He hasnt said what he plans to do with it.” The football St. Louis Cardinals moved to Arizona in 1987, and the city went nearly a decade without a franchise until the Los Angeles Rams arrived in 1995. AP Sports Writer Howard Fendrich contributed to this report from New York. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

The UFC will finally venture into Latin America and heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will lead the charge. UFC president Dana White announced at a press conference on Tuesday that Velasquez will return from a shoulder injury to defend his title against Fabricio Werdum at “The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America” finale on Nov. 15 in Mexico City. “Its the no brainer,” White said. “This is where all the baddest fighters have come from for years. This is the new martial art people are taking all over the world. Its no secret the best fighters forever have come from Mexico and Latin America. It has always needed to happen.” Velasquez, born in Salinas, California to Mexican immigrants, has been sidelined with a torn labrum in his shoulder since his last title defence, a TKO victory over Junior Dos Santos at UFC 166 last October. “Its a great honour for me,” the champion said through a translator. "Im ready for this … and its going to be a dream come true that i get to fight here in Mexico. Velasquez had surgery in December and fully expects to be prepared for the fight that culminates his participation as a coach on the hit reality show opposite Werdum. The show will feature a group of fighters from two weight classes – bantamweight (135 pounds) and featherweight (145 pounds). “Im going to do whatever I can do to fight here in Mexico and Im going to do whatever it takes to give a good fight,” Velasquez said. White was quick to dispel any potential jinxes that could come in the form of a training injury or any other physical misfortunes that do occur in a contact sport. “Obviously, I think having Cain here is important. Its a contact sport, anything can happen,” White said. “I want to make sure that when we come to Mexico for the first time we bring the best fighters and the best fights.” “Hes a young guy, he should be healing up pretty well.” On the other had, Werdum wouldnt mind facing a less-than perfect champion. “I dont mind if Cain wants to fight with injury because I would love it,” the Brazilian said laughing, also through a translator. As for the other fights on the card. White says its too early to predict anything. “Its so far away. As we get closer well start to build the card,” he said. “You know i want to come into Mexico with a bang.” “People are going to come from all over the world to see this event. Believe me, its a monumental event,” he added. “Weve been talking about it for years and years. People are going to come from all over the world to see this event.” . The St. Louis Blues are proving to be a good story, too. Jaroslav Halak made 24 saves, David Backes had a goal and an assist and the streaking Blues beat Colorado 4-1 on Wednesday night. Alexander Steen scored his 20th of the season and Jaden Schwartz also had a goal for the Blues, who have won five straight. It was their first victory in Colorado since April 12, 2009. “I cant tell you the last time we won in this barn, so obviously coming here, its big getting two points,” said Chris Stewart, who was playing for Colorado when St. Louis last won in Denver. “I think I was on the receiving end last time this team won in this barn, so its a big two points.” The Blues lead the NHL with 18 wins more than a quarter of the way through the season. Semyon Varlamov stopped 31 shots and Patrick Bordeleau scored for the Avalanche, who had won three in a row. Colorado coach Patrick Roy was angry after the game with what he considered a double standard. Roy, hired by the Avalanche from the Quebec Major Junior League last summer, took some criticism earlier this season for talking to opposing players during the game. He took issue Wednesday with St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock. “I was very mad at the end because Ive been jabbed by different coaches around the league, especially Hitchcock when he said thats junior, stop talking to players and talking to the referee,” Roy said. "But I saw a guy on the other side who was talking to players and was also talking to the referee. He got the referee even (angry). Seems to me theres different rules for everybody in this league. “I guess the old guys are allowed to do whatever they want and I guess us, because were younger, we cant say anything. Im a little (mad) about that.” Colorados 17-5-0 start was a franchise best this deep into the season, but the Blues have been the better team lately. They have won 10 of 12 and earned points in 11 of those games. “We are sticking to the way we play. We have been for the last little while,” Steen said. “Pucks are bouncing our way, we are taking care in our own end and our goaltending has been phenomenal.” St. Louis is 4-1 in one-goal games during its recent run and has averaged 33.dddddddddddd4 goals. “Our 5-on-5 play is getting better and our special teams have really carried us,” Hitchcock said. One of the wins in that stretch was a 7-3 victory over Colorado on Nov. 14, which came in the middle of a three-game skid for the Avalanche. St. Louis dominated that game from the start of the second period, and that continued Wednesday. The Blues had the first seven shots, and goals by Backes and Steen in the first 6:10 of the game gave them a quick two-goal lead. Backes scored when he redirected T.J. Oshies pass on a rush 2:46 into the first period. Steen made it 2-0 with a power-play goal, which tied him with Washingtons Alex Ovechkin for the overall NHL lead. “We havent had good history in this building the past few years, so we needed to set the tone,” Backes said. “Oshie makes a great pass and I found a piece of it and it found a hole.” After being outshot 9-1 to that point, Colorado pushed back and got on the board when Bordeleau stuffed in a rebound midway through the first. The Avalanche had several chances to tie it, but Schwartzs short-handed goal with 1:48 left in the period made it 3-1 and stopped Colorados momentum. “We lost the game in the first 10 minutes,” Matt Duchene said. “If we played a little better in the first 10 there, even giving up that shorty late in the first period there we go into the next period with a 2-1 deficit, its a different game.” The Avalanche failed to mount a comeback in the final two periods. They were held to 14 shots in the last 40 minutes, with four coming in the final 5 minutes of the game. They had two on a power play and two more after pulling Varlamov for an extra skater, but Stewart sealed it with an empty-net goal with 1:44 left. “In general, we played a really sound game,” Hitchcock said. “We managed the puck properly, we just did a lot of things good. We had a lot of guys on top of their game.” NOTES: Blues C Derek Roy had two assists. … Avalanche C Paul Stastny missed the game due to back spasms. … Duchene returned to the lineup after missing three games with an oblique strain. … Steen has 99 goals as a member of the Blues. … St. Louis short-handed goal was its first of the season. It also was the first short-handed goal allowed by Colorado. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – UFC veteran Chael Sonnen retired from mixed martial arts a day after confirming he failed a recent drug test. Sonnens bout with Vitor Belfort at UFC 175 in Las Vegas next month was scrapped after Sonnen tested positive for two banned substances. Sonnen has lost three of his last four fights, including UFC title shots against Anderson Silva and Jon Jones. Sonnen lost all three of his career UFC championship fights. Texas acquired Young from Toronto in July 2000, along with reliever Darwin Cubillian, for pitcher Esteban Loaiza. Young made his major league debut playing twice the final weekend of that season. Young became a regular in the Rangers lineup after being called up in late May the next season. Texas went from being a last-place team to consecutive World Series in 2010 and 2011. He was traded last winter to Philadelphia, then to the Dodgers at the end of August before the playoffs. Young has three young sons, ages 17 months to 8 years old, who were all born in Dallas, where he and his wife still live. Playing away from home for the first time last season was difficult for Young, even though he loved his time with the Phillies and hometown Dodgers. “My boys are the driving reason why my playing days are done,” Young said. “Youve got to be there with them, you have to be there for every success, every failure. If something doesnt go right, I want them to see me first.” Had Young wanted to keep playing, he said the Dodgers made him a tempting offer that would have provided significant playing time. Young definitely wants too get back in baseball at some capacity in the future, but isnt in a rush to do so.dddddddddddd Rangers general manager Jon Daniels, who got emotional at one point during his opening remarks, said the team certainly wants to have Young involved in some way. “The game of baseball is going to miss you, and I certainly hope you dont stay away from the game,” said Texas manager Ron Washington, describing Young as the ultimate teammate. “I dont think this game will be able to survive without a Michael Young in it.” Among the handouts Friday was a listing of all 2,375 of Youngs career hits — it was almost all of 11 triple-columned pages. The first was a single at Baltimore on May 27, 2001, and the last was a double in a home game for the Dodgers against Colorado last Sept. 29. Originally a second baseman for Texas, Young voluntarily moved to shortstop after Alex Rodriguez was traded before spring training in 2004. Young was an All-Star each of his five seasons at shortstop and won a Gold Glove in 2008. Young switched to third base in 2009 and earned an All-Star nod at that position. He made that move when the Rangers promoted Elvis Andrus, then 20 years old and without ever playing above the Double-A level, to the big leagues. When third baseman Adrian Beltre signed with Texas before the 2011 season, Young became a utility player. He started at five different positions, made another All-Star game, led the AL with 213 hits and was part of the team that twice in Game 6 came within a strike of winning the World Series against St. Louis. “What sticks in my head most is the 2011, what I felt was a championship team that doesnt have a championship,” he said. “It still eats at me — a lot, actually. Im over it, but Im not. I dont want to spend too much time thinking about it. When I do, I still get a sick feeling in my stomach.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Jose Bautista hit a long home run off Roberto Hernandez three batters into the game, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 Wednesday in rain-shortened spring training opener for both teams. Bautistas home run landed outside of the ballpark at Bright House Field. The game was called in the middle of the seventh inning. “It felt pretty good, I cant deny that,” Bautista said. “More importantly I felt like I was seeing the ball great. I havent been playing for a while so thats a positive.” Bautista missed the last six weeks of the season with a hip injury, the second straight year in which he ended the season on the disabled list. He hit 28 home runs in 2013 after reaching 27 the year before. He was 1 for 2 with a walk and two runs scored Wednesday. Ryan Howard and Marlon Byrd each had run-scoring singles off former Phillies left-hander J.A. Happ in the bottom of the first. STARTING TIME Phillies: Hernandez, making his Phillies debut, allowed two runs on four hits in two innings. He is the front runner for the fifth starters job after signing a one-year, $4.5 million contract as a free agent this winter. “When I face him I try to throw changeups and sinkers down,” Hernandez said of the home run to Bautista. “But today I got down in the count and had to throw it down the middle. I missed up.” Blue Jays: Happ struggled in his only inning against his former team. Although he ended up striking out the side, he gave up four hits and a walk in facing eight batters. Happ finished second in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2009, when he went 12-4 with a 2.93 ERA. Happ was 5-7 with a 4.56 ERA in 18 starts with the Blue Jays last season. TRAINERS ROOM Philadelphia left-hander Cole Hamels threw off the mound for the first time this spring. The 30-year-old Hamels entered camp behind the rest of the pitchers after experiencing biceps soreness in November. Hamels will throw another side session on Saturday and isnt likely to pitch in a Grapefruit League game for another two weeks. HOWARDS END Howard got off to a fast start, singling in a run in the bottom of first. The Phillies first baseman played only 80 games last year because of knee problems. Manager Ryne Sandberg is impressed with Howards progress. “I really like Howards aggressiveness early in the count with men on base,” Sandberg said. KNUCKLED Cliff Lee will make his first start of the spring on Thursday, when the Phillies take on the Blue Jays for the second straight day, this time in Dunedin. But several Phillies regulars will not be in the lineup, including Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley. Toronto is starting knuckleball pitcher R.A. Dickey. But Sandberg says hes not sitting his regulars because of Dickeys unusual pitch. “I dont think that comes into play that much,” Sandberg said. “If they keep it simple, it comes down to see the ball and hit it.” . Cellular Field on Saturday night, hell not only be returning to where his career began.ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – Michael Ferland was a prolific scorer in junior and his first two professional goals came just in time for the Abbotsford Heat. Ferland scored twice, including the third-period winner, as the Heat defeated the Toronto Marlies 4-3 in American Hockey League action Saturday. The 21-year-old had not scored a point in his previous 18 AHL games but came through, scoring with six minutes to go and also capped off a three-goal two-minute frenzy at the end of the first. “The success I had was from the physical play, using my body,” said Ferland, who also had a fight in the second period. “I got a lot of energy off that. It felt good to get that first goal too, but it felt even better with all the boys congratulating me. I forgot how it felt like to score, so I was obviously glad to put those in.” Ferland recorded 211 points in 216 Western Hockey League games, but the 2010 fifth-round choice by the Calgary Flames failed to produce in his first few games with the Heat last year. This season he felt more comfortable. “I was here half a year last year and as a first-year pro I wasnt used to it all,” said Ferland. “I really feel like last year helped me out a lot, what to expect.” He played seven games for the Heat before being sent back to junior last year. “He was basically a 20-year-old that was living like a 17-year-old,” said Heat head coach Troy Ward. “When you try to do that in this room and this environment, it becomes very difficult.” After taking a feed from Brett Olson, Ferland rushed down the left wing and buried a wrist shot short side on goalie Drew MacIntyre, breaking the 3-3 deadlock. “You saw on his second goal that hes got a cannon,” said Heat defenceman Dean Arsene, who was voted captain by his teammates Saturday morning. “Thats one of the things the coach has been trying to preach to him: shoot the puck, shoot the puck, and hes playing with (Ben) Street and (Blair) Jones, guys who are highly skilled and getting him the puck. He had a monster game, with a good fight that really got the guys energized.” Ferlands linemates Jones and Street had two assists apiece. “With Max (Reinhart) being called up (to the Calgary Flames) I got an opportunity,” said Ferland. “Troys been really good with me, trying to find a way to get me going. It felt good playing with those two guys, reeal good players.dddddddddddd.” Paul Byron had a goal and an assist and Michael Granlund also scored for Abbotsford (10-4-1), who have now won six straight games and sit atop the Western Conference. Joni Ortio made 24 saves extending his personal win streak to five games. “We dont feel like weve played our best hockey yet and were still getting wins so we want to keep pushing each other to keep playing,” said Ferland. Josh Leivo had a goal and an assist for the visiting Marlies (6-4-1). Petter Granberg and Stefan Legein also scored for Toronto and MacIntyre stopped 30 shots in the losing effort. The Marlies opened the scoring at 3:33 of the first period. Leivo broke down the left wing and wristed a shot past Ortio for his second of the season. The Heat temporarily took control of the game with three goals in the final three minutes of the first. Granlund tied the game at 17:31 of the first. He took a feed from Chad Billins and wristed a shot from the face-off circle with Greg Nemisz providing traffic. The Heat actually had a goal waved off when Granlund tried to glove a rebound down but it went in the net before he could get some wood on it. At 18:39 Byron converted a rebound from a Street shot. Then, at 19:28, Ferland took a feed from Street in front and put it around MacIntyres pad. However, the Marlies would cut the deficit in half just 35 seconds into the second period. Granberg converted a pass from Spencer Abbott, picking the corner, glove side, for his first of the season. Legein tied the game with 89 seconds to play in the second. He took a pass from Trevor Smith and snapped a shot by Ortio for his third of the year in just his fifth game. The Heat had the better chances in the third period, outshooting the Marlies 14-6, before Ferland finally put the Heat ahead for good with his late goal. All six of Abbotsfords consecutive victories have been by one goal, including an overtime and two shootouts. “Our resiliency is big for us,” said Arsene. "Whether we go up a goal or down a goal. Those last six games havent been the prettiest games to watch. We were able to stick with it and pull out these two points. “So many times … it can come down to a team can miss the playoffs by a point or two, looking back to the start of the year wishing you got those points you should have had.” The two clubs face each other again Sunday. ORLANDO, Fla. — The NFL officiating department will help referees rule on instant replay reviews starting next season. League owners passed a rule Tuesday allowing referees to consult with director of officiating Dean Blandino and his staff to help determine whether a call should be upheld or overturned. NFL officials said the change should speed up the process. Blandino and other staff will be monitoring the games from league offices in New York, and they will immediately begin reviewing challenges before the referee even gets to his monitor. They can make recommendations on what replays to look at, but the referee still will make the final decision. Rich McKay, Falcons president and co-chairman of the influential competition committee, called it “kind of a proof of concept to see how this works. We feel pretty comfortable with it, though.” “What we do like is we take the true experts in replay, those in New York, to be able to communicate with the referees who have the ultimate decision,” McKay said. “We just think we get a more consistent decision-making process.” Blandino said the new process will be faster and make more eyes available to help in the reviews. “Well be reviewing all the angles the network is providing, in essence finding what is the best reviewable aspect, and getting a baseline for the referee,” he said. "Then we will begin the communication process with the referee once he is done speaking to the coach and announcing the challenge. “Consistency is what we are striving for in officiating and this will definitely help us in that area.” One coach, Cincinnatis Marvin Lewis, a member of the competition committee, believes the entire procedure has been upgraded. “By consulting with New York, they can speed up the review process while they talk to the referee,” Lewis said. “They can tell the referee: Here are the shots all set for you to look at.” Blandino wasnt sure this change would lead to more challenges, noting that coaches will still lose a timeout for an incorrect challenge. Players no longer will be allowed to dunk the football over the crossbar of the goalposts in celebration. Blandino said the NFL is making a clarification of the rules for mutual respect and sportsmanship. “We put a rule in several years ago about not using props on the football field: the football, the pylon,” he said. "This is just expanding upon that rule to include the crossbar of the goalpost. We had the situation with (Saints tight end) Jimmy Graham knocking the uprights off kilter last season and it delayed the game. “We have a potential rule change where we could raise the uprights, so you may have more issues with that if guys are dunking.” The owners also banned roll-up blocks to the side of a player. In the past, the rule only barred such blocks from behind. “We saw some plays on tape that we just felt like we needed to expand that protection,” McKay said. Commissioner Roger Goodell believes small changes like that one, along with other recent rule changes, have made the game safer. “We went through that (data) in greater detail with the outside firm thats been tracking that for us and its very clear that the rule changes we have made had the positive impact that we intended,” Goodell said Monday. “While there are some that say it has had a negative (impact) — as an example, ACL injuries being up — thats not the case. What weve seen is that players have adjusted to the rules and they are finding that target zone and it is a safer, better game because of it.” A dozen other proposals for rules or bylaw changes were being considered by the owners, with votes on them expected Wednesday. TORONTO – Dressed in a white Maple Leafs sweater, Phil Kessel was the first player to exit the ice at practice on Monday afternoon. He was followed closely by David Clarkson, donning red, seconds later. Clarksons actions one night earlier, leaping off the bench in defence of Kessel during a pre-season game against the Buffalo Sabres, will cost him the first 10 games of the regular season. The fallout will be written in how the Leafs manage in his absence. “Now it gives another guy an opportunity,” head coach Randy Carlyle observed of his roster with the regular season opener around the corner on October 1st. Inked to a one-year deal worth $1 million, Mason Raymond figures to see the most immediate boost in stock, and is likely to slide into a top-six role in Clarksons absence. The 27-year-old skated with Nazem Kadri and Joffrey Lupul during the back half of Mondays workout. Beyond Raymond though, opportunity figures to have opened even further with Clarkson shelved for the first three weeks of the regular season. There will be a little more daylight for the likes of Carter Ashton, Joe Colborne, Troy Bodie and perhaps even Trevor Smith to emerge. With Clarkson out and Raymond likely climbing the depth chart in his place, the Leafs would appear to have two openings in their bottom-six – Jay McClement could also move up the lineup – as Frazer McLarens status (finger) is largely in doubt for the opener in Montreal. James van Riemsdyk Tyler Bozak Phil Kessel Joffrey Lupul Nazem Kadri Mason Raymond [open] Dave Bolland Nik Kulemin [open] Jay McClement Colton Orr Carter Ashton Joe Colborne Troy Bodie *Frazer McLaren Trevor Smith David Clarkson *Injured “Every game so far you have to prove yourself,” Ashton said, the 22-year-old dressing in four of the first five exhibition games. “I dont think anythings changed. From the first day of camp, the intra-squad scrimmages, and [then] you take yourself into these exhibition games, you have to take every opportunity you get.” Ashton made himself noticed over the weekend. In Buffalo on Saturday, he emerged victorious from a dust-up with Steve Ott, and added a hard-charging assist on Jay McClements game-tying goal. The following night at home against those very same Sabres, Ashton notched two assists playing alongside Kessel and Tyler Bozak, also rushing to the aid of the former when John Scott readied himself for a throttling. “You want to get noticed,” he said, noting his intent to impart a physical presence, “and you have to do things and for me bringing some physicality to the weekend and get in a couple scraps, thats just part of the game. Theres different roles on every team so thats definitely one thing I was looking to do.” Though hes yet to make the same definitive impression that Ashton has in recent days, Colborne believes he too is ascending with three exhibition games still to go. “I feel like Ive played better every game in camp so far,” the 23-year-old said, “and especially these last two games Ive felt like Ive really started to show what I can do.” Teamed with James van Riemsdyk and Josh Leivo on Sunday, Colborne produced an assist on the eventual game-winner, also garnering significant opportunity on the penalty kill. Looking to crack his first NHL roster, Colborne believes those two elements in combination with a sturdy defensive game will help him emerge with a job in the final week. “Ive been generating some chances,” he said. “Stay the course and keep going out there and showing the coaching staff what I can do.” Raymond quickly emerged as viable option for the Leafs early in the exhibition schedule, the speed and hints of offence immediately apparent from the 27-year-old. His value to the club also lies in the depth he offers, something that will now be put to the test with Clarkson absent. Clarksons impending absence will sting regardless. The organization targeted and eventually landed the 29-year-old when free agency opened this past July, believing his spunky veteran presence would help them take another step this season. The weight of his absence can be minimized though – Clarkson would be eligible to debut on October 25th – by a spark from those replacing him in the lineup, notably Raymond and whoever else wins a job in the coming week. Ottawa lost their number one centre (Jason Spezza), number one goaltender (Craig Anderson) and number one defender (Erik Karlsson) for large chunks of 2013 and still managed to qualify for the playoffs, thanks in large part to the efforts of their young players. And while the Senators conundrum was substantially more extreme – considering the value of the aforementioned trio – their ability to overcome offers a template in surviving adversity when faced with the loss of talent. “We set a plan on the first day of training camp,” Carlyle declared. “Now Id say that plan has changed. You have to adjust on the fly. You have to have plan A, B, C and D in the drawer. Were at plan B and C right now.” For those lingering on the bubble like Ashton, the challenge is becoming a part of that plan. “You dont take anything for granted,” he said. “Every opportunity you get, you have to prove yourself.” . CALGARY — On an evening that the Calgary Flames honoured Canadian Olympians in a pre-game ceremony, the night was spoiled by a pair of players from the U.S. Olympic hockey team. Dustin Brown had a goal and an assist and Jonathan Quick made 25 saves as the Los Angeles Kings made it back-to-back wins Thursday night with a 2-0 victory over the Flames. “They had a good Olympics too,” said King head coach Darryl Sutter. “They make a big deal of it in the States because they dont win a medal but these guys all got to go and represent their country and the way they did it, especially our guys, they did an awesome job so they came back in a good frame of mind.” Quick was steady all night in collecting his third shutout of the season and 29th of his career. He was especially sharp through the opening 40 minutes as Calgary built up a 23-13 edge in shots but trailed 1-0. “The first star of the game was Jonathan, no doubt about it,” said former Flames defenceman Robyn Regehr. “He was very solid, even though we were on our heels a little bit. He made the saves that we really needed him too.” Brown opened the scoring three minutes into the game, then helped the Kings get an important insurance goal, setting up Dwight King 3:30 into the third period. In the final 20 minutes, the Kings got back to their trademark stifling defence, outshooting the Flames 11-2 to secure the victory. “It was a great, great third period, exactly what we were looking for,” said Quick, who improves to 17-13-2. “It was a solid, road period where you dont give up much and you make them work to gain zones. And scoring a goal at the beginning of the period was huge to give us a little bit more of a gap.” Los Angeles (33-22-6) has won three in a row including its first two games after the Olympic break. They opened their short two-game road trip with a 6-4 victory in Colorado on Wednesday night. In third place in the Pacific Division, the victory increases the Kings lead over the Vancouver Canucks to seven points. Calgary (22-30-7), which went into the break on a 6-1-1 tear, lost for the first time at home in six weeks. The Flames had won their last five games at the Scotiabank Saddledome. “First two periods, I definitely thought we were the better team,” said Flames captain Mark Giordano, while adding that Quick was the difference. “He made some great saves. He fought through some screens and tips. Theres nothing you can do. He was playing well, our guys were going to the net, our guys were fighting. But we couldnt find a way to get that one.” The story line for the Flames was the NHL debut of two of their top prospects – both of them Finns. Making his NHL debut in net was Joni Ortio, who was called up from the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League when fellow Finn Karri Ramo went down with a knee injury on Feb. 1. Ortio backed up Reto Berra for the final three games before the Olympic break. “I felt good, but I cant be totally satisfied, of course, because its always my goal to beat the goalie at the other end and that didnt happen tonight,” said Ortio, who had 22 stops. The 22-year-old had been playing excellent hockey with the Heat where he had compiled a 20-6-0 record with a 2.22 goals-against average and .926 save percentage. “I felt good all day. I was kind of anxious during the day but as soon as I got back to the rink, I was all good,” Ortio said. Also making his NHL debut was 20-year-old Markus Granlund, Calgarys second round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft. Granlund logged 7:14 in ice time, centring the Flames fourth line with Paul Byron and rugged Kevin Westgarth. In his limited time, the younger brother of Minnesotas Mikael Granlund, looked impressive registering two shots on goal. As a rookie in the AHL, Granlund is tied for fourth in the league in goals with 23 in 50 games. The Flames were playing their first game in 19 days and the rust showed early. On his second shift, defenceman steady Kris Russell bobbled the puck deep in his own end with it being promptly intercepted by Brown who darted to the net and stuffed a backhand behind Ortio. “I think our mistakes got magnified tonight because their goalie didnt give up one,” said Giordano. One of Calgarys best chances to the tie it came late in the second period when it got its first power play. The Flames controlled the puck in the LA zone for the entire two minutes but they could not solve Quick. Notes: Calgary D Chris Butler (lower body) left the game halfway through the second period… Injured Flames Brian McGrattan (upper body) and Curtis Glencross (ankle) are back practising but have not yet been cleared for contact… The Kings scratched assistant captain Matt Greene, Matt Frattin and Tanner Pearson… Former Flames D Robyn Regehr played against his former team for the first time since being traded June 25, 2011. Regehr has played the second most games in Flames history (826)… Ortio, 22, is the youngest goaltender to start a game for the Flames since Jean-Sebastien Giguere on Feb. 12, 2000… Over 50 Canadian Olympians including Calgary-born bobsled gold medallist Kaillie Humphries were honoured in a pre-game ceremony.
