PINEHURST, N.C. — Graham DeLaet played his first round at the U.S. Open not unlike his first round at the Masters. There were some nerves and there werent any birdies. The Canadian ended up posting a five-over 75 on the Pinehurst No. 2 course that left him 10 back of the lead. “I got off to a rough start,” DeLaet acknowledged after his round. “It might have been just a little bit of nerves. I wasnt hitting my driver great and then a couple of short-game miscues.” DeLaet started with bogeys on two of the first three holes, including a three-putt on the 12th hole from about 10 feet. Still, he didnt appear out of sorts on the course in the early going and after a bogey on the par-3 15th, he settled into a nice stretch, rolling off nine-straight pars. “I felt I got in a pretty good rhythm for the majority of the middle part of my round,” he stated. “I wasnt really able to make birdies, but I had a couple of tap-in pars that kept it stress free.” He stumbled in, however, making what he called disappointing bogeys on two of the last three holes. An errant tee shot on seven that landed in a bunker led to a bogey while on the last hole he was unable to get on the green in two. “It was disappointing to bogey seven and nine coming in because, if I was able to finish at three over, I would have been pretty happy,” he said. The stats show that DeLaet made 10 fairways – above average for the field – and 11 greens, also above the average. But on the greens, the putter didnt seem to be working. He used his flat stick 33 times, far too many, but easily understandable on Pinehursts difficult greens. “Its tough,” summed up DeLaet. “Its a tough round of golf. I felt like I handled it well. Unfortunately, I just didnt execute coming in.” DeLaets score came on a day when the field posted the lowest scoring average at a U.S. Open since 2003. The course average was 73.23 and there were more under par scores on Day One than in the opening rounds of the previous two years combined. But on a course that is playing this tough and with few birdie holes on the course, planning a comeback is not as easy. DeLaet understands that and will try to stay the course as he did in the first round. “Its just being patient,” he stated. “I was proud of myself for doing that all day even though its hard to aim a nine-iron 30 feet from the hole just trying to make four, but thats kind of what you have to do. Well see what happens, if I get a little behind the eight ball I might have to press. “Im not completely out of it. I know that a good round [Friday] will go a long way to getting back into it.” . The 27-year-old Niskanen, the more offensive-minded of the pair of defencemen joining the Capitals, got a $40.25 million, seven-year contract. “Its a very big commitment from Washington. Thats no small thing. Youre talking a seven-year commitment for a very substantial amount of money,” said Niskanen, who got married Saturday. Only Manchester City has been more lethal in front of goal, with the team — a point behind Liverpool and Arsenal in third — scoring 51 goals in 17 games.Canadas Olivier Rochon battled freezing temperatures and high winds en route to a bronze medal in a World Cup aerials event in China on Saturday. Due to weather conditions, organizers altered the regular format to a one-jump event, which meant that each athlete had only one chance and about three-and-a-half seconds in the air to make the podium. Guangpu Qi of China placed first while his countryman Zongyang Zia took the silver. Despite the abbreviated format and less-than-ideal conditions, Rochon decided against downgrading his attempt. “Because of the wind, I only got a couple of training jumps in, but I was confident about them so I decided to go for my hardest trick, [a quadruple twisting, triple backflip],” said Rochon. “When the Chinese guys who jumped after me saw that I landed well, they decided to do harder tricks too … I dont mind, Im happy for them, but I am glad that I blocked a Chinese sweep.” The bronnze medal means Rochon, who has been on the podium four times already this season, keeps a grip on the yellow leaders bib by a margin of 50 points.dddddddddddd When asked if hes feeling pressure to keep amassing results, Rochon replied, “I try not too look at the big picture, when I do that I get ahead of myself and I learned the hard way that when I get ahead of myself I go down. So, Im working really hard to stay in the moment and look at everything jump by jump.” Montreals Jean-Christophe André was the only other Canadian in todays competition. He finished 14th after slapping back on his landing. “Im a bit disappointed. I got a little excited on my takeoff today so I leaned back too much. The conditions were hard, but this was my mistake and Im looking forward to making up for it later in the month,” said André. On the womens side, China swept the podium and there were no Canadians in the event. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

TSNs Jack Armstrong offers his thoughts on the unfortunate injury of Eric Bledsoe, the growth of Gordon Hayward, the future of LaMarcus Aldridge, David Lees rebounding ability and the suspension of Andre Miller. 1. ERIC BLEDSOE (Suns): What a shame. Another injury to a very good player. Hes played terrific ball for his team this year and the idea of playing two point guards together along with Goran Dragic worked out beautifully for their team. Tough road ahead for this squad without him. Hes the guy that sets the tone defensively for them and his toughness was impressive. The move to Phoenix was a perfect landing spot for him. Hopefully, he gets back sooner rather than later and in good health. 2. GORDON HAYWARD (Jazz): Did you see him the other night vs. OKC? Awesome. 37 pts, 11 rebounds and seven assists. A young player whose game and confidence has grown and, considering that he decided not to accept Utahs contract offer in the off season, it will be a very interesting and fruitful negotiation for him with his current employer and hell have lots of interest in the open market. 3. LA MARCUS ALDRIDGE (Blazers): His team has had a great run so far this season at 28-9 and now, for the first time, hes given indications that hed consider signing an extension to stay in Portland after expressing his frustration with playing there this past summer. What a difference winning makes. The addition of Robin Lopez has taken lots of interior heat off him and being surrounded by terrific 3-point shooting and a wonderful young lead guard in Damian Lillard has a way of opening your eyes to the fact that the grass isnt always greener. Awesome fan base and a market with a nice tradition. Good place to consider staying. 4. DAVID LEE (Warriors): This guy gets hammered a lot for his sketchy defence, and I understand it sometimes, but this guy can score and board effectively. Look at what hes done in the last 12 games while his team went 11-1. 22 points and 10 rebounds a night is impressive and Id say most teams could handle that from their power forward. Is he perfect? Far from it, yet hes better than most. I still think he contributes more to the winning than being the cause of the struggles. 5. ANDRE MILLER (Nuggets): Ive always been a huge fan of his game and quiet leadership. Hes been a very good pro and, in my opinion, could still start for a bunch of teams in the league. Unfortunate situation right now with his suspension in Denver. I like head coach Brian Shaw a whole lot and its a shame that it looks like hell be parting ways with the team at some point. If Im a team in need of a guy who will make all the smart plays and give you solid D as well, Im in the market for him, thats for sure. Erik Karlsson and the Ottawa Senators felt good after their 3-1 defeat of the Washington Capitals on Monday, their first back-to-back victory in 51 days and their first three-game winning streak at the Canadian Tire Centre this season.(SportsNetwork.com) – The Calgary Flames will look to make sure the New York Islanders wont start a winning streak on Thursday night. Calgary has two games left on its pre-Olympics schedule and both are on the road. After posting a perfect 5-0 mark on a homestand, the Flames began a three-game road trip on Tuesday in Montreal and lost a 2-0 decision. It was Calgarys fourth loss in a row on the road, dropping the club to 9-14-4 as the guest this season. The Flames, who were coming off sweeping their first five-game homestand since Feb. 7-15, 1997, were unable to solve Carey Price on Tuesday despite firing 27 shots at the Canadiens goaltender. After the teams combined for just nine shots in a scoreless first frame, the Flames found themselves with a 5-on-3 under five minutes into the second, but Calgary couldnt capitalize, as Price turned away all comers to keep the visitors off the board. Rene Bourque would later score with 3:45 left in the second period to give Montreal a 1-0 lead and the games only other goal was an empty-netter from David Desharnais in the closing seconds of regulation. “The turning point in the game was our 5-on-3 power play,” Calgary head coach Bob Hartley said. “If we score, its a different game. We had a few good chances, but Price came up with some big saves.” Reto Berra, starting between the pipes for the Flames in place of an injured Karri Ramo, stopped 25-of-26 shots in the setback. Ramo wont be able to play again before the Olympic break and Berra expects to gett another start tonight.dddddddddddd The Isles have fared very well against the Flames in recent years, winning three straight and five of the last six encounters in this series. New York has claimed the last three meetings on Long Island, including the most recent matchup on Dec. 29, 2011. The Islanders were suffering through an 0-4-1 slide before recording Tuesdays 1-0 victory in Washington. Andrew MacDonald scored the only goal of the game early in the third period to give the Isles their first win since beating the rival New York Rangers on Jan. 21. Evgeni Nabokov stopped all 22 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season. Nabokov helped the Isles kill off six Washington power-play chances in the game. New York went 0-for-5 with the man advantage. “Its a good win for our team,” said Islanders coach Jack Capuano. “Were a desperate team and I thought our guys worked hard tonight right from the start. I thought we defended real well, we were structured tonight and guys played hard.” Despite the win, the Isles still face an uphill battle to make the playoffs. The club is currently 14th out of 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 10 points out of a postseason berth. New York is kicking off a five-game homestand on Thursday, although the club will only get to play the first two portions of the residency before the NHL goes on its break for the Winter Olympics. The Isles, who are 8-12-8 as the host, will welcome Colorado on Saturday in their final test before the two-week hiatus. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

NEW YORK - On a night usually dominated by news of players let loose, the Washington Nationals and Oakland Athletics filled pitching needs with trades. Washington obtained right-hander Doug Fister from Detroit for infielder Steve Lombardozzi and left-handers Robbie Ray and Ian Krol on Monday. Oakland acquired closer Jim Johnson from Baltimore for infielder Jemile Weeks and a player to be named. Fister was 14-9 with a 3.67 ERA last season for the AL Central champions, who last month traded slugging first baseman Prince Fielder to Texas for second baseman Ian Kinsler. “It gives us some flexibility for some other things we want to do,” Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said, insisting the trade wasnt made to free money for a long-term deal for AL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, who can leave after next season. Fister joins a talented Nationals rotation that already includes Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann and Gio Gonzalez. Oakland, which also closed in on a $22 million, two-year contract with left-hander Scott Kazmir, is revamping after losing to the Tigers in the AL division series. The 30-year-old Johnson led the majors with 51 saves in 2012 and tied for the big league lead last season with 50. The two-time AL West champion As found their closer to replace All-Star Grant Balfour, who became a free agent after the season and is expected to command a multiyear deal. Meanwhile, 43 players became free agents at midnight EST when their teams failed to offer 2014 contracts, a group that included 2009 NL Rookie of the Year Chris Coghlan (Miami) and St. Louis reliever John Axford. Clubs often use the so-called tender deadline as leverage to force agreements with players they wont go to arbitration with. Among the players let loose were Toronto catcher J.P. Arencibia, Boston right-hander Andrew Bailey and outfielder Ryan Kalish, Mets right-hander Jeremy Hefner, Yankees infielder Jayson Nix, Tampa Bay outfielder Sam Fuld and Kansas City infielder Chris Getz. The Los Angeles Angels gained nearly $10 million of payroll flexibility, declining to offer contracts to pitchers Tommy Hanson, Jerome Williams and Juan Gutierrez along with third baseman Chris Nelson. With an excess of catching after reaching an agreement to sign Brian McCann, the New York Yankees traded Chris Stewart to Pittsburgh for a player to be named, and Stewart agreed to a $1 million, one-year deal with the Pirates. The Yankees also finalized a $5 million, two-year contract with shortstop Brendan Ryan, who became their starter in September when Derek Jeter went back on the disabled list. Kazmirs deal with Oakland is pending a physical, a person said, speaking of anonymity because the team hadnt finalized the contract. The 29-year-old left-hander went 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA in 29 starts and 158 innings last season for Cleveland and becomes part of a rotation that includes Sonny Gray and A.J. Griffin. The Athletics probably wont pursue a new deal for 40-year-old Bartolo Colon, an 18-game winner. Utilityman Willie Bloomquist agreed to return to Seattle pending a physical expected to take place later this week, a baseball official with knowledge of the deal said, also speaking on condition of anonymity because the agreement wasnt final. Bloomquist spent his first seven big league seasons with Seattle and the past three with Arizona. He hit .317 for the Diamondbacks this year but had just 139 at-bats. Catcher Dioner Navarro agreed to an $8 million, two-year contract with Toronto that pays $3 million next year and $5 million in 2015. The 29-year-old batted .300 with a career-high 13 homers and 34 RBIs in 89 games for the Chicago Cubs last season. An All-Star in 2008, he has not played more than 89 games in a season since 2009 because of injuries. Another catcher, Jose Molina, agreed to a $4.5 million, two-year contract to remain with the Tampa Bay Rays. Thirteen players eligible for arbitration agreed to one-year deals: San Diego left-hander Eric Stults ($2.75 million) and right-hander Tim Stauffer ($1.6 million); Baltimore outfielders Nolan Reimould ($1,025,000) and Steve Pearce ($850,000); Atlanta left-hander Jonny Venters ($1,625,000) and infielder Ramiro Pena ($700,000); Washington right-hander Ross Ohlendorf ($1.25 million); Detroit outfielder Don Kelly ($1 million); Chicago White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers ($950,000); Philadelphia first baseman Kevin Frandsen ($900,000); Oakland right-hander Fernando Rodriguez ($600,000); and Cleveland right-handers Frank Herrmann and Blake Wood ($560,000 each); In agreements announced Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers reached deals with outfielder Mike Baxter and catcher Drew Butera ($700,000 each) and left-hander Scott Elbert ($575,000). The Canadian duo finished with a four-run time of three minutes 50. ST. LOUIS — Danny Duffy became the latest pitcher to shut down the St. Louis Cardinals. Duffy worked six innings of one-hit ball coming off a pair of poor outings and Alex Gordon homered to start a breakout three-run seventh for the Kansas City Royals in a 6-0 victory over the suddenly punchless defending NL champs on Monday night. “I told him, You didnt throw a great game, you pitched a great game,” manager Ned Yost said. “He was just right on top of his game.” The Royals had just two singles off Shelby Miller (6-5) in a game that had been scoreless before they opened the seventh with four straight hits. Gordons fifth homer ended a 15-inning scoreless drought and Mike Moustakas capped the rally with a two-run double. “I felt good early on,” Miller said. “I felt like I just kind of gave the game away in the seventh. Its just frustrating.” Matt Holliday had two singles and a walk for the Cardinals, who have been shut out in consecutive games at home and have single-digit hit totals the last four games. Theyre just 2-6 with one game to go on a nine-game home stand. “Its a long season. Youre going to have those times,” said Yadier Molina, who is 2 for 21 during the home stand. “We know were good hitters.” Between Hollidays single with two outs in the first and his single leading off the seventh, the Cardinals were 0 for 17 with a walk — also by Holliday in the fourth. Coming off an 8-0 loss to San Francisco on Sunday, the Cardinals were shut out two straight times at home for the first time since 1992 against Pittsburgh, and by six or more runs at home in two straight games since dropping a doubleheader to the Reds in 1937. “Weve had lots of meetings, weve had the conversations we needed to have,” manager Mike Matheny said. “What were doing right now isnt going to work and they know that. We all do.” Duffy (3-5) struck out five and walked one, rebounding from consecutive losses in which he surrendered 10 earned runs in 10 innings. He has a one-hit start over six or more innings each of the last three seasons.dddddddddddd “Physically, I felt really good,” Duffy said. “I still didnt have as much behind the ball as I normally do, but I felt fine just like last time.” Rare backing from the offence made everything feel a lot better. The Royals totalled three runs while Duffy was in the game his first five starts over 27 innings. “Sometimes its just the luck of the draw,” Duffy said. “The guys swing the sticks really well.” Three relievers completed a three-hitter. The Royals advanced one runner to second base before Gordon led off the seventh with his fifth homer, a drive over the Cardinals bullpen in right field. “It was awesome,” Moustakas said. “It got a good pitch to hit and he crushed it and it kind of loosened us up in the dugout.” Lorenzo Cain beat out an infield hit unsuccessfully challenged by the Cardinals and Miller threw his second wild pitch of the inning after a visit from pitching coach Derek Lilliquist, setting up Moustakas double. Kansas City added three in the eighth. Cardinals rookie centre fielder Randal Grichuk struck out three times and whiffed fielding the ball on the RBI single by Salvador Perez, allowing a second run to score. NOTES: Holliday has reached safely in all 29 home games. .. The Cardinals anticipate pitcher Lance Lynn, who underwent medical tests after tweaking his right knee Sunday, will make his next start. … Cardinals pitching prospect Marco Gonzales, a first-round pick last year, and teammates from Double-A Springfield attended the game on a day off. … The Royals claimed RHP Blake Wood on waivers from Cleveland and assigned him to Triple-A Omaha, making room on the 40-man roster by transferring RHP Luke Hochevar (elbow surgery) from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. Kansas City also purchased the contract of RHP Wilking Rodriguez, optioned RHP Louis Coleman to Omaha and designed LHP Justin Marks for assignment. … The Royals are 5-1 in interleague play. MIAMI – Jose Fernandez walked into the Miami Marlins clubhouse four hours before game time and extended his left arm to shake hands with teammates. His right arm rested in a sling and was encased in a cast from above the elbow to his hand. “Im excited,” Fernandez said with a grin. “Im throwing a bullpen tomorrow lefty.” That would be the only way last seasons NL Rookie of the Year would be able to pitch anytime soon. Fernandez underwent Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow Friday, and he is expected to be out 12 to 18 months. He rejoined the Marlins on Tuesday for the start of their six-game homestand, but only as a spectator. He also spoke to reporters for the first time since the operation. Fernandez said he felt a pinch in his elbow during a start against the Dodgers on May 4, and was at less than 100 per cent in his final start May 9 at San Diego. He said he didnt tell anyone because missing a start wasnt an appealing option. “I said, I cant do this to my team. Were in first place. I cant let them down right now,” Fernandez said. “Its nobodys fault. It happened. Its sad it did. I dont blame anybody, and I dont regret not saying anything. That was my call. Probably it wasnt the smartest thing, but this is my team, and I give my life for my team.” An attorney for Fernandez released a statement last week saying the pitcher changed his delivery for his final start, but Fernandez said it was nothing his team or manager could detect. “I was trying not to let anybody see that I was in a little pain,” he said. Fernandez said the ligament came off the bone, leaving him no choice but to undergo surgery. At the time he led the majors in strikeouts, and was 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA. “It was sad not because I got hurt, but because I felt like I let my team down,” he said. “That was the tough part. I felt bad, but I can take care of this and be back and strong.” Tuesday would have been Fernandezs day to pitch as the Marlins opened a series against the Phillies. “Hes going to be out a long time, but we know hes on the road to recovery,” manager Mike Redmond said. “We know a lot of guys come back and either pitch the same or better. Its tough to see him in the sling, but we know hes going to be back.” Fernandez underwent surgery in Los Angeles. He plans to return there next week to have his cast and stitches removed, before the long rehabilitation process begins. The Cuban defector said hes eager to get started. “To me this is just a little bump in the road,” he said. “Ive been through a lot more stuff, tougher things. This is just something Ive got to learn from.” At age 21, Fernandez has a 16-8 record with a 2.25 ERA in 36 career starts. Does he anticipate hell be able to pitch as well when he returns? “I hope better,” he said. “Im going to be out for a year. Id better learn a lot of things and get a lot stronger. I cant wait to get back on the mound. Its going to be a special day. Its far away, but we have to take the little steps to get there.” [url=http://www.theofficial49ersonline.com/red-y-a-t…. The first-year manager was asked after Detroits 2-1 loss to Kansas City on Wednesday how his mood is when he heads home from the ballpark these days.LAWRENCE, Kan. — Naadir Tharpe finally got to stand in the middle of the court at Allen Fieldhouse, bask in the adulation of another sellout crowd and celebrate a conference championship. The junior guard, who wrapped up his first two Big 12 titles on the road, had 19 points to lead five Kansas players in double figures Monday night, and the fifth-ranked Jayhawks held off Oklahoma 83-75 to ensure a share of their 10th consecutive league crown. “Just a great feeling,” Tharpe said. “To be at home, to hear the fans and all that, its a beautiful feeling. It just shows the tradition of Kansas and what it means to us.” Wayne Selden and Andrew Wiggins added 15 points each, and Joel Embiid had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Jayhawks (22-6, 13-2), who poured off the bench at the buzzer to celebrate the latest addition to their nation-leading 57 conference titles. It might be the only one for Wiggins and Embiid, the dynamic freshman duo projected to be lottery picks if they come out this season. Wiggins has already stated his intention to do so. “Winning the championship,” Wiggins said, “just a great feeling on the court.” Only two schools in mens Division I basketball have won more consecutive conference titles than Kansas: UCLA captured 13 straight from 1967-79 in the Pac-10, and Gonzaga won 11 straight in the West Coast Conference from 2001-11. “Its something you know,” Selden said. “When you come in here, thats the standard.” Cameron Clark had 18 points and Buddy Hield finished with 16 for the Sooners (20-8, 9-6), who have lost 12 of their last 13 games against the Jayhawks, including both this season. Oklahoma still has not won in the Phog since 1993, when Billy Tubbs was on its sideline. “Its so tough here for a lot of reasons,” current Sooners coach Lon Kruger said. “Bill does a great job, theyre very talented, the atmosphere is great, the difference really is in the runs they make, and thats what you have to avoid. Easier said than done.” The first half Monday night boiled down to an old-fashioned Big Eight tussle. The Jayhawks threw the first body punnch, picking up right where they left off in a rout of Texas by taking a 15-4 lead.dddddddddddd Oklahoma answered with a few haymakers of its own, going on a 13-2 charge and eventually pulling ahead 27-25 with 5:26 left in the half. Selden took over down the stretch, though, scoring seven straight points to give Kansas the lead back. Frank Masons three-pointer capped a 10-0 surge and made it 42-33 at halftime. “We handled the ball well, made tough plays, but two or three stretches is why Kansas is so tough,” Kruger said. “We gave them moments of run that you have to try to avoid.” The Jayhawks, arguably the deepest team in the Big 12, forged their lead despite playing without a handful of players due to foul trouble. Wiggins, Tharpe, Perry Ellis, who finished with 11 points, and Jamari Traylor all had two fouls, and Connor Frankamp was on the bench with three. Wiggins picked up his third on the first play of the second half, when Ryan Spangler drove to the basket for an and-one. It was the start of a 10-2 run that got the Sooners back in the game. “They made a couple shots, we made a couple shots,” Clark said, “but the main thing is we didnt take care of the ball at critical times.” Clarks hot shooting and a couple of timely three-pointers by Hield gave Oklahoma the lead, only for Kansas to come back once more. Wiggins scored on a putback of his own miss with 8:01 left to give the Jayhawks a 60-59 lead, and their advantage grew to 69-63 a few minutes later. The Sooners kept finding answers. When Wiggins hit a three-pointer to make it 74-66, Isaiah Cousins promptly scored in the paint. When Tharpe got a home-rim bounce on a pull-up jumper, Hield was there to hit a fall-away three-pointer to close within 76-71 with 1:30 left. Oklahoma simply ran out of time, and as the final seconds ticked off the clock, another sellout crowd at the Phog began to chant, “Ten straight! Ten straight!” “In a league this competitive, thought by many to be the toughest league in the country, to have a three-game lead with three to play is pretty special,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. SOCHI, Russia — Canada is appealing the final results of the mens skicross at the Sochi Olympics in an effort to get fourth-place finisher Brady Leman of Calgary bumped up to gold. The French team swept the podium in the event. The Canadian Olympic Committee, along with the Slovenian Olympic Committee, are alleging that French team staffers changed the shaping of the athletes ski pants for better aerodynamics. The ad hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport is scheduled to hear the case Saturday night. Leman finished fourth in the final to Jean-Frederic Chapuis, Arnaud Bovolenta and Jonathan Midol of France in Thursdays competition. Slovenias Filip Flisar placed second in the small final and would be bumped to bronze if the appeal is won. Russia would win the silver. The Canadians and Slovenians initially requested that the world governing body of skiing disqualify the French competitors. But the FIS competition jury decided the protests couldnt be heard because they werent filed on time after the race. A decision by the CAS is expected Sunday. The Canadian Olympic Committee didnt immediately respond to an email request for comment. Leman reached Thursdays final after dominating the two previous rounds, but got off to a slow start in the medal round and then fell while trying furiously to catch up. “I was in disbelief, almost, when I was lying there,” he said after the race. “But its part of skicross.” It was a second Olympics in a row to end in disappointment for Leman. At the Vancouver Games, he didnt get to compete after fracturing a leg during a practice run. “I just feel slightly better, right now, than I did in Vancouver,” he said. "It sucked watching my teammates from the stands, and all I wanted here is a chance. “I gave myself a really good chance today, and that Im really proud of that, but it sucks to be so close to the podium.” Leman shrugged off talk he may have been intentionally shut out by the French skiers. He fell too far behind from the start and only briefly had a one-on-one battle with the last of the three leaders. “No, they were all trying for it, they were going for it,” he said. “They skied the same as if it had been three different nations.” “Everyone was trying to pass and thats in part why I ended up getting stuck on the outside. I probably should have tried going inside, but we have to make split-second decisions. You cant get them all (right) over a day of skicross. At some point you run out of luck — like I did a couple of hundred metres short.” . The Scotsman was dismissed only five days after being told by the club he would remain in charge for the "foreseeable future. COLUMBUS, Ohio — There was a fireworks display after the Washington Capitals-Columbus Blue Jackets game. It was the second one of the evening. And — no surprise — Alex Ovechkin was holding the match. Ovechkin scored the first and last goals in a four-goal splurge over a span of 6:40 as the Capitals erased a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2 on Saturday night. Notice to the rest of the NHL: The old Ovechkin is back. “I feel good,” he said. “I feel my shot coming back. They give me the puck and when I have the opportunity, I shoot it.” There were whispers that maybe the “Great Eight” had lost his scoring touch when he had just eight goals in floundering Washingtons first 29 games. But hes now had seven in the last eight games, including a six-game points streak in which he has six goals and three assists. He and his teammates woke up just in time, apparently still tired from beating Buffalo 3-1 at home on Friday night before flying to Columbus. “We had back-to-back games, so we didnt have a morning skate,” Ovechkin said. “I think we were also sleepy. Its a good win and some momentum. We want to keep going.” The late uprising was nothing new — for either team. The Capitals have scored 12 third-period goals in their last six games. They have 46 in the final period this season — among the most in the NHL. “After the second period, we were talking about it,” said Dennis Wideman, who had a goal and an assist in the spurt. “We werent working; we were turning pucks over. We were giving them a lot of rush chances. We needed to cut down (on that) in the third and we did a better job.” Alexander Semin also scored for Washington, which won its third in a row. Down 2-0, Ovechkin got the Capitals on the board 4:23 into the third. He was denied on a nifty, blind, redirect attempt. But Wideman collected the rebound and passed to Ovechkin for a rocket of a one-timer. At the 6:48 mark, Washington was cycling the puck when Wideman dropped a pass for Semin, who drilled a sharp shot through traffic to tie it, disappointing a crowd of 18,199 at Value City Arena. Just 28 seconds later, Wideman came on a rush down thee right wing and unleashed a shot.dddddddddddd Columbus defenceman Aaron Johnson reached back with his stick, the puck ramping off the blade and rising past a surprised Steve Mason. Ovechkin added the crowning blow with a power-play goal at the 8:57 mark off a tape-to-tape pass from Dmitry Orlov, who had circled the goal cage before tossing the perfect setup. The goals by Semin and Wideman came with four skaters on the ice for both teams. “The four-on-four there was our skill,” coach Dale Hunter said. “Alex made a great shot, Wides made a great shot. There were big plays by the people setting them up. We moved the puck around well on the four-on-four and created two goals.” Tomas Vokoun had 35 saves for the Caps, keeping them in it until the offence awoke. “It was a nice comeback, obviously,” he said. “We werent happy with the game we played for two periods. We came in here and said, We have to be aggressive. We have nothing to lose, now that its 2-0.” It was yet another heartbreaking, late-game collapse by the Blue Jackets, who got goals from rookie John Moore and Samuel Pahlsson. Theyve been outscored 52-26 in the final period this year. Before hanging on to a lead for a 4-1 victory at Dallas on Thursday that ended a six-game losing skid, they had failed to win in regulation in eight straight games in which they led after two periods. Make that nine of 10 now. “Its awfully frustrating and its really disappointing,” Columbus coach Scott Arniel said. “For 50 minutes of that game, we were picture perfect. A lot of that that you saw tonight was four games in six nights. We looked like a tired hockey club and made a couple of mistakes. And some of their skilled players made some real good plays, too.” NOTES: The Blue Jackets called up rookie D David Savard from Springfield (AHL) to fill in for Wisniewski. … The Capitals recalled F Cody Eakin from Hershey of the AHL after their game on Friday night. To make room, D Mike Green (right groin) was played on injured reserve. … It was the first time this season that the Capitals won both ends of a back-to-back. Used to be the greatest rivalry in hockey was Canada vs. Russia. When the best players from both countries hooked up for an eight-game series in 1972, a heated rivalry was born. Canada won the famous Summit Series, but the Russians taught them a thing or two about conditioning and team play. Then, in 1980, things changed again when a bunch of school kids did the unimaginable and beat the Russians in the semifinal of the Olympic Games – the Miracle On Ice. Even though that victory wasnt for the gold medal, it is widely regarded as the greatest hockey game ever played and put the American right into the thick of things in terms of world dominance in the sport of hockey. Since then, Canada and Russia has waged a bitter ice war and now, with the Olympic Games being played in Russia, the host country desperate wants to win the gold medal. Thats what makes Saturdays match-up against the United States such an interesting one (7:30 a.m. ET, streaming at cbc.ca/olympics). Team USA lost the gold medal by a goal in 2010 in Vancouver and thoroughly dominated its opening game in Sochi, crushing Slovakia 7-1. Russia, meanwhile, beat Slovenia 5-2, but was not overly impressive. The Americans – pros this time – are influenced by the legend of the Miracle On Ice. Not only that, Team USA star defenceman Ryan Suter is the son of Bob Suter who was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team. Ryan was born five years after the stunning win over the best team in the world. On the other side of the ice, Viktor Tikhonov, 25, is the grandson of legendary Russian coach who goes by the same name. The elder Tikhonov is 83 years old. All guns firing The Russians boast a high-power offence featuring the likes of superstars Alexander Ovechkin, Ilya Kovalchuk and Evgeni Malkin. All three scored goals in the opening victory against Slovenia. Team USA has a few snipers of its own starting with Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs. In NHL action this season only Ovechkin, with 40 goals, has scored more often than Kessel who has 30. The speedy right-winger had a goal and three points in Team USAs win over Slovakia. Team USA coach Dan Bylsma has indicated he will stick with Jonathan Quick in goal. Quick, who led the Los Angeles Kings to the Stanley Cup two years ago, got the start ahead of Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres. Miller almost singlehandedly led the United States to a gold medal in 2010. He was the tournaments most valuable player despite losing the final to Canada in overtime. HOUSTON — Oaklands offence went cold after the As jumped out to an early lead against Houston on Friday night. When they finally rediscovered it in the ninth inning, almost everybody got in on the action. Daric Barton and Josh Donaldson had two RBIs apiece in a seven-run ninth inning during which 12 As batted to help Oakland to a 12-5 win over the Astros. The game was tied at 5 when Josh Fields (0-2) plunked Brandon Moss before back-to-back singles by Alberto Callaspo and Craig Gentry loaded the bases. Bartons sharply hit grounder bounced off Jose Altuves glove and into right field to send two home. Rookie right fielder George Springers error on that play allowed a third run to score, sending the few fans left filing to the exits. “It was awesome to finish the way we did,” Gentry said. “I thought Mossy getting hit by that pitch and Callaspo with that nice single, I think that really got us going. Once we got a couple of runs across, we were kind of relaxed and were able to let it go.” Donaldson, who homered twice on Thursday night, connected again on Friday with a shot off Anthony Bass to the Crawford Boxes in left field to make it 12-5. Moss was hit by a pitch for a second time in that inning after the home run to become the first player in the majors to be hit twice in the same inning since David DeJesus on June 18, 2012. Jed Lowrie had two hits and two RBIs to help the As improve to 5-0 against Houston this season and 25-5 against the Astros all-time. Altuve had three hits and drove in a run for Houston, which has lost 10 of its last 12 games and allowed 22 runs in the first two games of this four-game series. Chris Carter hit a leadoff double in the eighth inning, but Luke Gregerson (1-1) retired the next three Astros to end the threat. Former Astro Fernando Abad hit Jason Castro on the backside with a pitch with one out in the ninth inning. Castro jawed with catcher Derek Norris before heading to first base. Houston manager Bo Porter darted out of the dugout and began yelling at plate umpire Jordan Baker and was ejected. “If youre going to toss our guy (Thursday), it looked pretty intentional to me,” Porter said. “Its a judgment call on the umpires part, and he didnt think it was intentional. I said my piece and what I thought, and he threw me out of the game.” Castros plunking came after Lowrie accused Houston of intentionally hitting him with a pitch Thursday night for an incident in the last series between these teams when the Astros were miffed after he attempted a bunt with a seven-run lead in the first inning. Moss didnt think he was hit on purpose, but he parroted what Porter said a night before when Lowrie was hit. “Theyve hit us a few times this series and we hit one of their guys,” Moss said. “I think Bo said it (Thursday), the game of baseball takes care of itself and thats what happened tonight. Some people may not like it, Castro might not like it but you stand behind your words.” The As put up four runs in the second inning and extended the lead to 5-1 in the fourth. Houston answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to tie it up. Jesse Chavez had his first tough outing of the season, allowing a career-high eight hits with five runs — four earned — in five innings. He entered having allowed just one earned run in each of his four starts and had a 1.38 ERA. Houston starter Brad Peacock yielded five hits and five runs, including three earned, with a career-most six walks in five innings. NOTES: As left fielder Yoenis Cespedes sat out Friday after straining his left hamstring a night before. Manager Bob Melvin said he expects him to be out a couple of days. … Houston right-handed reliever Jesse Crain, who has been on the disabled list all season after biceps surgery during spring training has been shut down after developing bursitis in his shoulder. General manager Jeff Luhnow said the current problem is not related to his surgery. He was scheduled to return in early May, but Luhnow said he will not be ready then and he should have a updated timetable for his return in about 10 days. … RHP Mark Appel, the first overall pick by the Astros in 2013, has been sent to extended spring training after starting the season at Single-A Lancaster. Luhnow said he is not injured but was behind after missing most of spring training after an emergency appendectomy and needed more games to get “more used to the pro routine.” . You can listen to the game live on TSN Radio 1050 or on tsn.ca/toronto at 7pm et. The Maple Leafs lost for the third time in four games their last time out, dropping Saturdays shootout decision against the visiting Detroit Red Wings. The 5-4 loss was also the sixth setback in eight games for Toronto, which went 1-1-1 during its recent three-game homestand. Toronto overcame a 3-1 deficit after 20 minutes to grab a 4-3 lead in the third period before Detroits Tomas Tatar potted the equalizer with 6:16 remaining in regulation. “Obviously, we didnt have a very good first period,” said Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle. “We score the first goal and then we basically stood around for the rest of the period and watched them do their thing.” Daniel Alfredsson and Pavel Datsyuk both scored during the shootout to lift the Red Wings to victory in a preview of the 2014 Winter Classic. Former Maple Leaf Jonas Gustavsson did not allow a goal in the shootout after making 19 saves through overtime for Detroit. Joffrey Lupul recorded a goal and an assist in the loss, while Dion Phaneuf, Cody Franson and David Clarkson also scored for the Maple Leafs. Also, Paul Ranger will draw back in on defence replacing John-Michael Liles, while Colton Orr returns to the lineup in favour of Troy Bodie. The Maple Leafs have lost nine of their last 10 road games heading into this evenings game. Overall, Toronto is just 6-8-3 as the visiting club this season. The Rangers have a 2-4-2 record on a nine-game homestand, but the Blueshirts posted one of those two wins in Sundays 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild. Carl Hagelin broke a tie in the second period and New York cruised to the victory from there. “We rolled four lines, each time playing very smart and simple,” said New York head coach Alain Vigneault. “They were doing great things with the puck.” Cam Talbot, who starts in goal for the Rangers tonight, made 24 saves for the Rangers in his first start since Dec. 2. Talbot is now 7-2-0 with a 1.67 goals against average on the season. The Rangers, who are just 7-10-2 on home ice this season, will play their next five games on the road after completing the homestand tonight. The Rangers have won two straight home meetings against Toronto, but the clubs have split the last six encounters at MSG. Garbutt has a career-high 18 points with 10 goals and eight assists in 46 games this season.PARIS – Eugenie Bouchard could downplay expectations. Nobody would blame her. Shes only 20-years-old after all and playing in just her second French Open. But when asked what would need to happen to make her campaign at Roland Garros this season a success, Canadas rising star doesnt hold back. “To win it,” Bouchard said, her own boldness yielding a laugh. But, make no mistake, she is dead serious. “I always expect high things of myself and Ive been working so hard for so many years that nothing is a real surprise to me and I have big ambitions in tennis. I want to achieve great things.” Bouchard certainly isnt lacking confidence. She showed that during a magical run to the Australian Open semifinals in January. But Bouchard has a specific reason to have a hop in her step these days. On Saturday, she beat Karolina Pliskova in the championship match of the Nuremberg Cup, earning her first career WTA title. “Just so happy,” said Bouchard describing the emotions in the moments after match point. “To go to a city and leave and not lose a match and win all the matches is something special.” Bouchard almost didnt play in the tournament. Most top players will not travel to an event in the week before a grand slam choosing instead to rest, practice and arrive at the venue early. But after disappointing first-round straight-set losses at tune-up events in Madrid (v No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska) and Rome (v No. 61 Francesca Schiavone) Bouchard was convinced that playing more was the best way to prep for the seasons second major. “We were debating whether to even come to Nuremberg and I said, You know what? I want to play matches. I want to keep trying and keep working. We got here early and practiced. It was pretty cold early in the week, it was tough practices, tough conditions, but I kept working hard and Im proud of myself for that. When you work hard good things happen. I think thats what happened this week.” That Bouchards first career championship came on clay is a bit of a surprise. It is not her favourite surface. "My game is prretty aggressive, so I like to step in and control the point and the clay just slows it up a little bit, but its a good thing.dddddddddddd It teaches me patience … sometimes Im not so patient. “It adds different dimensions to your game and if I can perform well on clay it will show myself that I can have a well-rounded game.” Last year Bouchards run at the French Open ended in the second round at the hands of eventual finalist Maria Sharapova. It was a tough loss (6-2, 6-4), but one that made the Montreal native stronger. “I think it helps for sure. I got to play on centre court, experienced a rain delay, my match was over two days and its all part of the experience. I always enjoy the chance to play one of the great players and I always learn so much. Ive learned from that match.” Bouchard wont have to deal with Sharapova or any other top name early in the tournament this time around. Thats one of the perks of being the 18th seed. Bouchard will open against 86th ranked Israeli Shahar Peer, who has lost all three matches to the Canadian in her career including one in March (6-2, 6-2 in Acapulco). Waiting in the second round should Bouchard advance will be either German Julia Goerges or Portugals Michelle Larcher De Brito. Both are outside the top 100 in the latest rankings. The third round is when things may get tougher as No. 12 Flavia Pennetta would be a formidable roadblock, but far from unbeatable. But first things first: Bouchard needs to get settled in France. One negative repercussion from playing in the week before a slam is that it makes for a tight turnaround. There was a 90-minute flight from Nuremberg to Paris on Saturday night followed by a practice on Sunday. Bouchards match against Peer is set for Monday. Although theres actually a chance the short rest time may be a good thing. “I always like playing matches so, for me, the more I can play the better. I can get in a rhythm of playing competitive matches and I think it gives me extra confidence.” Extra confidence? Not a fun thought for those in Bouchards section of the draw. ARLINGTON, Va. - Of all the subjects raised with George McPhee at his on-the-way-out news conference after being told hes done as the Washington Capitals general manager, the two most vital to understanding the teams future and recent past involved captain Alex Ovechkin and fired coach Adam Oates. And those were two topics McPhee did not want to address Monday, two days after the Capitals announced the 17-year GMs contract would not be renewed. “I dont really want to answer questions about individuals. Im going to duck those,” McPhee replied when Ovechkins name was first brought up. Pressed to weigh in about the three-time NHL MVP, McPhee replied: “If youre asking me if we can win with him, I believed we could win with him.” As to how Ovechkin could lead the league with 51 goals and be among the worst in the NHL with a minus-36 rating, McPhee said: “Of course I have opinions, but those issues are for the next guy.” Later, McPhee was asked to describe his working relationship with Oates, who was fired Saturday with a season left on his three-year deal. “Again,” McPhee said, “I dont want to talk about individuals.” At another point in the half-hour meeting with the media, though, McPhee did say he “loved working with” Oates two immediate predecessors as Washingtons coach, Bruce Boudreau and Dale Hunter. The Capitals finished ninth in the Eastern Conference this season, missing the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2007. “For five years, we really had an opportunity to win a cup. We were legit,” McPhee said. “And then I thought the last couple years, we could make the playoffs, but going deep might be hard, because I didnt think we were quite deep enough.” During the six post-season berths in the span from 2008-13, though, Washington never made it past the second round. McPhee thinks hes leaving the team in good shape, ready to reach the Stanley Cup finals “sometime in the next three years.” “Im not exaggerating when I try to explain that this organization is in great shape,” McPhee said. “We dont have any bad contracts on the books. Lots of cap space to work with. A great (AHL) affiliation in Hershey. A whole group of young players coming into the organization.” He said the Capitals simply need a “pretty easy fix.” McPhee said his contract wont expire until July 1, so other teams would need to ask the Capitals for permission to speak to him about a job. “If theres another GMs job in the future and someone gives me an opportunity, Id love to do it again,” he said. “And Id go to Iceland to do it. Doesnt matter where it is.” McPhees mood was light and he made a handful of jokes. Perhaps its because he was not stunned that the Capitals would make changes. “I felt it was coming,” McPhee said, “but in this job, youre 24 hours away from being fired almost any time.” . Both players are returnees from the 2013 Finnish World Junior team.ZURICH, Switzerland — A German anti-doping laboratory using a new steroid test has found 266 positive cases in the past year and is finding other positives in retesting of old samples. Cologne lab scientist Hans Geyer revealed detailed figures Friday at an anti-doping conference hosted by FIFA. The lab found 184 cases involving stanozolol, the banned drug used by sprinter Ben Johnson at the 1988 Olympics, and 82 of oral turinabol, a steroid widely used in the former East Germany. Geyer said many of the positives since November 2012 involved athletics, weightlifting and wrestling, and all were reported to the World Anti-Doping Agency and sports governing bodies. “It was surprising for us, we didnt expect that many,” Geyer told reporters on the sidelines of the conference. “Most of them were from the first half of this year.” German broadcaster ARD reported this month on the testing at the Cologne and Moscow labs, and the IOC confirmed it was using the improved method to retest samples from the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics. Cologne scientists have used a Russian-developed test which detects steroids in smaller quantities for around six months after athletes took them. Previously reported cases this year included dozens of track and field athletes in Turkey, while the International Weightlifting Federation iddentified 29 athletes on its website who were banned this year for using one or both of the two steroids.dddddddddddd Geyer said he was surprised that no athletes challenged the lab results, which typically follows the introduction of a new test method. “We expected many objections, many outrages (from athletes) but nothing happened. This is very unusual for a lab,” he said. More cases are being revealed in re-tests requested by sports bodies, which the scientist did not identify, and have shown10 per cent positives. However, Geyer said no new cases have been revealed in testing of samples from cyclists, footballers or German athletes. “I think its a success of this strategy to look for long-term metabolites, but the best deterring effect is the long-term storage (of samples),” he said. Geyer suggested that the improved test showed the limitations of previous strategies to catch drug cheats. “Maybe the athletes always knew how long we could detect these substances,” he said. “Maybe the out-of-competition (testing) system doesnt work.” The IOC has said the new test will be used at the Winter Olympics in Sochi in February. It will also be used in the planned retesting of samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympics before the eight-year statute of limitations expires in 2016. BOSTON — Vezina Trophy finalist Tim Thomas stopped every shot and gave the Boston Bruins a chance for the biggest prize of all — the Stanley Cup. Forget their 20-year absence from the final. Dont talk about their epic playoff collapse of last season. And certainly dont mention their powerless power play. None of that matters after the Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 1-0 on Friday night on Nathan Hortons goal with 7:33 left in the penalty-free Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final. “Im just happy to see those guys smiling in the dressing room,” Boston coach Claude Julien said. “Right now were four wins from winning the Stanley Cup.” The Bruins will open the Stanley Cup final Wednesday in Vancouver against the Western Conference champion Canucks. Boston won its most recent championship in 1972 and hadnt reached the final since 1990, when it lost to the Edmonton Oilers. The Bruins left far behind the spectre of last years playoff failure. They blew a 3-0 lead in games and a 3-0 lead in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinal, losing 4-3 to the Philadelphia Flyers. “From the beginning of the season, we knew we had some unfinished business,” Bruins captain Zdeno Chara said. “Guys were hungry throughout the playoffs.” This season, they squandered 3-2 series leads in the first round against Montreal and then against Tampa Bay. But they beat the Canadiens 4-3 in overtime in Game 7, with Horton scoring the winning goal. Then the forward, playing in the post-season for the first time in his career after five seasons with the Florida Panthers, came through again with his eighth playoff goal. “He certainly has played like a big-game player,” Julien said. So has Thomas — all season. The 37-year-old goalie led the NHL in goals-against average and save percentage after missing all of last years playoffs because of a hip injury. After off-season surgery, he was as good as ever, and that includes the 2008-09 season when he won the Vezina Trophy as the leagues top goalie. “I think a lot of people thought I was over the hill,” Thomas said. “I knew it wasnt true. I put in a lot of work over the summer and Ive had an unbelievable year. Ive been blessed.” He made 24 saves in his third career playoff shutout and second of the Lightning series. Hortons goal spoiled an outstanding game by Lightning goalie Dwayne Roloson, who stopped 37 shots. Thomas playoff performance is even more remarkable because the Bruins scored just five goals on 61 power plays in the post-season. But there were no power plays for either side on Friday night in the clean, hard-hitting game. “There wasnt anything out there to call,” Roloson said. “Give the referees credit. for not disrupting the flow of the game.” Horton beat Roloson by deflecting a pass from left to right across the slot from David Krejci. “It is hard to explain how good this feeling is,” Horton said. His goal set off a loud celebration among Bruins fans, who have waited a long time for a trip to the finals. With three seconds left and the puck in the Lightning zone, Bruins centre Patrice Bergeron raised his stick while standing in the “spoked B” logo symbolizing the Bruins at centre ice. And when the game ended, Thomas raised both arms and arched his back against the net that the Lightning never reached in the decisive game as yellow and black towels given to fans fluttered to the ice. “Its great to be a part of something amazing. That was the highest level of concentration I have experienced,” Bergeron said. “I couldnt wait to jump on Timmy and enjoy the moment.” The Bruins improved to 2-3 in Game 7s under Julien but have won the last two. Theyre 11-10 overall in Game 7s. Andrew Ference started the only scoring play on the left side behind the red line with a pass to Krejci, also on the left. Horton was on the same side, but when Krejci got the puck, Horton veered to the right. Krejci skated in and threaded a pass to Horton, who put the puck in the open side between Roloson and the left post. “I dont think he could have stopped that puck and I dont think he could have done better than he did tonight,” Lightning coach Guy Boucher said. “Its hard to look at. One little defensive mistake.” And the Bruins werent about to squander this lead. “Once they went up 1-0, they really came back (on defence) with five guys and it was tough to get anything,” said Vincent Lecavalier, who had six goals and 13 assists in the playoffs. “We got a few shots, but it was tough to get the rebounds.” Roloson fell to 7-1 in elimination games during his career, including 4-1 this post-season. Tampa Bay rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat Pittsburgh in the first round, with Roloson shutting out the Penguins 1-0 in Game 7 on the road. But after beating the Bruins in Game 6 to force one more contest, the Lightnings comeback fortunes changed. “They have guys that can put the puck in the net and defend,” Boucher said. “Obviously, theyve got it all.” Tampa Bay forward Steven Stamkos was struck in the face by a puck early in the second period and briefly left the game. He was hit on the left side of the head off a hard shot from the right point by Bruins defenceman Johnny Boychuk and he immediately dropped to the ice. There was some blood on the ice when the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2008 got up and skated quickly to his bench, holding his face. He missed about five minutes of game time, then returned with a full cage face shield in place of the visor he had been wearing. Bostons Milan Lucic had the best scoring opportunity in the first when Krejci fed him for a breakaway. But Lucic shot the puck into Roloson with just under five minutes left. The Bruins also had solid chances late in the second. Roloson made a pad save on Mark Recchis shot from a few feet away then made another when Recchi shot the rebound with just under 2 1/2 minutes left in the period. “This is a great moment. (Its) been a long time for Boston. How long has it been actually?” Thomas said, “also a long journey for me to get here. Cant be too happy too long, though, unless you are the last man standing.” Notes: Tampa Bays Sean Bergenheim, third in the playoffs with nine goals after scoring just 14 in the regular season, missed his second straight game with an undisclosed injury that also kept him out of the last two periods of Game 5. … The 41-year-old Roloson played in his 50th post-season game. Thomas appeared in his 36th. … The date of the game, May 27, is the latest the Bruins have played in club history. … The Lightning have three players remaining from their 2004 championship team - Martin St. Louis, Lecavalier and Pavel Kubina, who missed the last 10 games with an upper body injury. … Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling attended the game wearing a Bruins jersey. Gretzky was asked if he believes Montreal Canadiens defenceman PK Subban should be on Canadas blueline in February at the Sochi Olympics. “Im not going to get in the middle of that controversy because Stevie Yzerman obviously knows what hes doing, he won a gold medal in 2010,” said Gretzky. . Jordan signed his contract Wednesday, making him the third inside linebacker with special teams experience that the Redskins have added in free agency. It was back in 1991 that Stephen Ames got a taste of what life in Canada would be like. For a guy raised in the tropical temperatures of Trinidad, it was a rude Calgary welcome. “I think the wind chill was minus-55,” he said recalling his first Canadian winter spent living in the basement of his mother-in-laws house. “I never left the house.” Ames has never really grown fond of winter, but he has certainly fallen in love with Canada. On Wednesday, the country paid him back for that by naming him to the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. A four-time winner on the PGA Tour including the 2006 Players, Ames is winding down his career on the regular tour and preparing to join the 50-and-over gang on the Champions circuit in April after reaching the magic age of 50. For most of this year, hell split his time between the two tours using his top 50-career money list exemption on the PGA Tour. When asked what he thought the difference between the two tours would be, Ames said it might have to do with what happens off the course. “I think its the 19th hole,” he said with a chuckle. “I think its a bit more relaxed after the round.” Ames would be a worthy inductee based solely on his playing record, but his contributions to Canadian golf go well beyond that. He has run the Stephen Ames Cup for the past decade, a team event that pits squads from Canada against those from Trinidad. Some of the youngsters who have participated in that event have gone on to earn U.S. college scholarships. And he was instrumental in bringing the Shaw Charity Classic to Calgary, helping line up a team of big rollers in the Western Canadian city to lay the foundation for the Champions Tour event. Ames was also the guy who gave an energetic young teacher named Sean Foley a chance to work with a PGA Tour pro. We all know where thats gone. When asked what the top mark of his career is, Ames didnt hesitate. “Its this,” he stated, in reference to his indduction.dddddddddddd “I think being in the Hall of Fame is the highlight.” On the course, Ames said that his Players victory was at the top of his personal list. I can say that in all the golf Ive covered and watched, that is simply the best 18 holes of golf Ive ever witnessed. Ive never seen anyone control his golf ball for every shot as Ames did that day. All he did was beat the best field in golf by six shots. I remember some of the biggest names in the game that day shaking their heads in disbelief at what he was doing to TPC Sawgrass. For some people, Ames is seen as a prickly personality but to those who get to know him, nothing could be further from the truth. Hes a guy with a huge heart who loves to laugh and loves his family. Sometimes when he speaks his mind, it can get him in trouble such as the occasion when he questioned Tiger Woods driving ahead of the 2006 Match Play. While a lot was made of that and the subsequent beating Woods laid on him, what he said wasnt wrong. Woods was hitting it all over the lot with his driver. After he won the Players, some media members took him to task for saying he might skip the Masters to go on a family vacation. They couldnt understand how someone would pass up the years first major, the one thats exceptionally difficult to get into. What many failed to realize was that his wife, Jodi, was recovering from surgery for lung cancer. Suddenly a golf tournament, even the Masters, didnt seem so important. There are also still some who, for small-minded reasons, dont even consider him a Canadian. To me, a guy who leaves his native country to willingly take up citizenship, to give back to the game here, to start businesses here, to create tournaments here and make his home full time in Canada – and even cheer for the Calgary Flames — is about as Maple Leaf as they come. Ames is more than deserving of a spot in Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, even if hes never learned to love those nasty wind chills. New York, NY (Sports Network) – James Southerland scored 10 of Syracuses final 15 points to help the second-ranked Orange rally for a 58-55 victory over Connecticut to end the Huskies dream of a second straight Big East Tournament championship. Dion Waiters finished with 18 points to lead the top-seeded Orange (31-1), who have won 11 in a row since their lone loss of the season against Notre Dame in January. Syracuse will face Cincinnati in Fridays semifinals at Madison Square Garden. “Im glad that we were able to get a win,” said Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim. “We havent played that many games [just one in the past 11 days] and we need to play again. [Fridays] game will help us, but this was a tremendous comeback. This team has been very good down the stretch all year, and that was the case today.” Shabazz Napier scored 15 points and Andre Drummond added 14 with 10 rebounds for UConn (20-13), which was trying to duplicate last years historic Big East run. The Huskies won five games in five days last March to capture their seventh Big East tourney crown, and had beaten DePaul and West Virginia to start this years festivities. Connecticut parlayed last years Big East championship into a national title and had a 13-game postseason winning streak halted with Thursdays loss. Jeremy Lamb, UConns leading scorer, finished with 10 points, including just two in the second half. “Fatigue is the most over written about thing in sports,” said UConn head coach Jim Calhoun when asked if his team was tired from playing the first two days. “Mental fatigue, though, I felt we had a little bit at the end. We came up a little bit short.” Connecticut led by as many as eight in the second half, but the Orange pulled ahead with an 8-0 run. Southerland ignited it with a three-pointer and Waiters jumper gave Syracuse a 48-47 edge before Southerland again connected from beyond the arc with just under five minutes to play for a 51-47 lead. After Drummonds dunk ended UConns seven-minute field goal drought, Kris Joseph hit a runner for his first basket of the game and Southerland followed a Tyler Olander miss with a long jumper to give Syracuse a 55-49 advantage with just over a minute to play. Joseph made one free throw with 26.2 seconds left for a seven-point lead, but UConn got four quick points. Napier was fouled as he scored on a drive to the hoop, but missed the ensuing free throw. Drummond, though, was able to grab the rebound and score to make it a three-point game. Southerland then calmly sank two from the line and Drummond countered with a score inside, but it came with only four seconds left as the Orange defended the three-point arc. Syracuse had trouble inbounding the ball, but finally did so and ran out the remaining time. The Orange beat UConn for the third time this season and ended a string of two straight losses by the top seed in the Big East quarterfinals. Connecticut topped Pittsburgh last year and Georgetown knocked off Syracuse in 2010. Syracuse opened some breathing room early with eight straight points to grab a 20-12 edge. Waiters fueled the burst with six points, but soon after picked up his second foul and went to the bench. UConn stormed back with a 12-5 spurt and pulled within 25-24 on a Lamb three-pointer with just over 90 seconds left in the first half. A Brandon Triche dunk off a Joseph miss gave the Orange a three-point margin heading to the break. Connecticut came out of the locker room with a 15-4 run. Drummonds slam off a missed three-point attempt by Napier gave the Huskies a 39-31 advantage with 14 minutes remaining. The Orange responded a few moments later with a string of seven in a row to pull within 42-41. “When they had the lead, they were in great position, and I thought our guys just dug down on defense, played a little bit harder and got going on offense,” Boeheim noted. “It was a great comeback.” Game Notes Joseph finished with 10 points and six rebounds, while Triche added seven points and a team-high seven boards…UConn held a 46-34 rebounding advantage, including an 18-8 margin on the offensive glass…Syracuse is the top seed in the tournament for the sixth time, but has never won the title from that spot…UConn beat Syracuse, 76-71, in overtime in last years Big East semifinals…Syracuse is 8-6 all-time against Connecticut in the Big East Tournament…Syracuse posted an 85-67 win over UConn at the Carrier Dome in mid-February and earned a 71-69 triumph at Gampel Pavilion two weeks later. Calhoun did not coach either game because of a back condition rectified by surgery. Cincinnati 72, (13) Georgetown 70 (2-OT) New York, NY (Sports Network) – Cashmere Wrights bucket with just over seven seconds left in double overtime was the difference as Cincinnati outlasted No. 13 Georgetown, 72-70, in Big East quarterfinal action. Yancy Gates led all scorers with 23 points for the Bearcats (23-8), who advance to face top-seeded Syracuse in a Friday semifinal. Dion Dixon totaled 13 points and eight boards, Sean Kilpatrick had 12 points and Wright added 10 with four assists. “As a coach, you talk about developing an inner toughness and not letting your offense affect your defense,” said Cincinnati head coach Mick Cronin. “Today was a great example of the character of our team. So I couldnt be more proud of these guys right now.” Henry Sims basket sent the game to a second OT, two of his team-best 22 points for the Hoyas (23-9), who topped Pitt on Wednesday to open their tourney slate. Sims also pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds. Otto Porters shot helped Georgetown play beyond regulation, and he finished with 14 points and seven boards. Jason Clark contributed 12 points in a valiant, but losing cause. As time wound down in regulation, Dixon hit 1-of-2 from the line for a 54-52 margin. After patiently waiting for an open chance at the other end, Sims found Porter who connected on a short jumper with 3.6 seconds left to force overtime. In the same situation nearing the end of the first overtime, Dixon again hit 1-of-2 at the line for a 62-60 Cincy edge, but a layup from Sims just ahead of the buzzer sent the game to a second extra session. “He has improved. Hes made a natural progression each year, and you see this year the fruits of a lot of hard work that he put in starting this summer and rededicating himself to being a good basketball player,” Hoyas head coach John Thompson III said in praise of Sims. Neither team led by more than two in double OT. Gates connected inside a minute left to give Cincinnati a two-point edge, but Sims responded on the ensuing possession. Wright then powered his way to the basket and hit the net with 7.6 ticks left. “I mean, it was all set by Yancy,” Wright said of his winning shot. “They were respecting me so much, like when he ducked in, seemed like the whole team just sucked into him, so the hole just opened up wide open, and I just took it upon myself to try to win the game for my team.” Sims potential game-winner from the top of the key hit the back of the rim as time expired. A 13-6 run keyed by four points each from Sims, Porter and Clark snapped a tie and left the Hoyas up 30-23 inside of a minute remaining in the first half, and it was a six-point margin for Georgetown, 30-24, at the break. Gates ripped off 10 points in a row and helped Cincinnati reverse a seven- point deficit and turn it into a 53-52 edge with 35.6 seconds to go in regulation. Game Notes Cincinnati took a slight 6-5 edge in the all-time series…Wright added a game-high five steals…The Bearcats won despite connecting on just under 39 percent of their shots (28-of-72), while the Hoyas finished at 48.4 percent efficiency (30-of-62). Louisville 84, (9) Marquette 71 New York, NY (Sports Network) – Louisville upset No. 9 Marquette, 84-71, in Thursdays Big East Tournament quarterfinals behind a balanced effort from Peyton Siva. Siva finished with 18 points, a career-high eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Kyle Kuric had a team-high 20 points and Chane Behanan chipped in 12 and eight rebounds. The seventh-seeded Cardinals (24-9), who downed Seton Hall on Wednesday, ousted Marquette in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year. They will play the winner of South Florida/Notre Dame in Fridays semifinals. The Golden Eagles (25-7), seeded second, hadnt played since March 3 after earning their first-ever double bye in the Big East Tournament. Darius Johnson-Odom scored a game-high 23 points in defeat while Jamil Wilson added 13 and eight rebounds. Big East Player of the Year Jae Crowder had 10 points and 12 rebounds but shot just 4-of-13 from the field. The Cardinals never trailed and led by as many as 15 late in the second half. They grabbed a 21-6 advantage to start and were up 32-21 before Marquette unleashed a 12-2 run Wilson had four points while Johnson-Odom and Crowder also scored during the push, which pulled the Golden Eagles within one, 34-33. Louisville responded, closing the first half with a 16-7 burst behind five points from Kuric to lead by double digits, 50-40, at the break. The Golden Eagles outscored Louisville 10-4 to open the second half, cutting their deficit to four, 54-50, on Vander Blues layup, but they would get no closer. A three-pointer from Kuric and two free throws from Russ Smith quickly pushed the Louisville advantage to nine and it surpassed double-digits, 65-54, minutes later on a pair of Kuric foul shots. The Cardinals cruised from there, as four straight free throws from Russ Smith made it 79-64 in the closing minutes, marking the largest lead of the game. Game Notes Louisville leads the all-time series, 41-26…The Cardinals downed Seton Hall, 61-55, in Wednesdays second-round matchup…Marquette had won its first game of the Big East Tournament in each of the previous five years. Defenceman Deryk Engelland scored in the first period for the Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury made 29 saves for his league-leading 33rd victory, after the Penguins rallied twice from one-goal deficits in a showdown between the leaders of the Eastern and Western Conferences. Corey Perry scored twice for the Ducks and Ryan Getzlaf had two assists, but the Ducks captain missed a chance to extend the shootout with a shot over the net — making him 0 for 6 this season in the tiebreaker. Jonas Hiller had 15 saves, one of them on a breakaway by Sidney Crosby in the first minute of overtime. The Penguins hold a three-point lead over Boston in the East. The Ducks have a three-point edge over St. Louis in the West and lead the overall standings with a 43-14-7 record. Perrys 34th goal lifted him to second place in the league, 10 behind Washingtons Alex Ovechkin. Perry opened the scoring 3:54 into the game, converting a rebound of Getzlafs 35-foot wrist shot. Engelland pulled the Penguins even at 7:47 with their first shot on net, beating a screened Hiller between the pads with a 45-foot slap shot. It was Engellands sixth goal, one fewer than he had in 187 games over his four previous NHL seasons. The Penguins had two shots go off the goalpost in the second period — one by newly acquired Lee Stempniak, the other by James Neal off the crossbar. NOTES: Crosby and Perry, both league MVPs, 50-goal scorers in a season and Stanley Cup winners, had their seventh head-to-head meeting. Crosby has three goals and four assists, and Perry has six goals and three assists. The Penguins are 5-2 in those games. … Crosby and Perry both scored in the shootout. … Anaheim D Luca Sbisa played less than 3 minutes, leaving the game with a lower body injury. … LW Chris Kunitz, who won Stanley Cups with Anaheim in 2007 and Pittsburgh in 2009, has no points in five games against the Ducks since they traded him to the Penguins in February 2006. … The Penguins havent allowed a power play goal in their last six road games and 19 short-handed situations. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs parted ways with veteran defensive back Dunta Robinson, who never quite lived up to expectations last season, and signed CFL wide receiver Weston Dressler on Friday. Robinson was just one year into a $13.75 million, three-year deal that the Chiefs hoped would provide a veteran presence in what became a vastly retooled defensive backfield. Instead, Robinson was slowed by a series of nagging injuries and appeared in only nine games, making 14 tackles and defending just two passes. He was also part of a defence that was torched by Indianapolis wide receivers in a loss that knocked Kansas City out of the playoffs. The move was widely expected not only because the 31-year-old Robinson struggled most of the season, gradually losing playing time to undrafted free agent Marcus Cooper, but also because the cash-strapped Chiefs would save more than $3 million. The Chiefs were bumping along the just below the salary cap at the beginning of the week, and theyre expected to make more moves — perhaps restructuring some of the long-term contracts signed by the previous regime — so that they can sign their draft class and be active in free agency. Kansas City is expected to lose Pro Bowl left tackle Branden Albert, who was franchised last season, though there are several in-house candidates to replace him. Offensive linemen Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz are also hitting free agency, as are defensive tackle Tyson Jackson, safety Kendrick Lewis and Pro Bowl punt returner Dexter McCluster. The move to sign Dressler, who spent the past six years in the CFL, could be in response to McCluster likely demanding a contract far more lucrative than the Chiefs are willing to pay. Dressler, a former North Dakota standout, caught 442 passes for 6,531 yards and 43 touchdowns for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, helping them win the Grey Cup this past season. Hes also proven that he can return kicks and punts, in essence many of the things McCluster did for the Chiefs. “Ever since the first time I touched a football, thats something I dreamed about, having an opportunity to play in the NFL, on the games biggest stage,” Dressler said during a recent news conference, when he was released by Saskatchewan and finalizing a deal with an NFL team. It was unclear at the time that his landing spot would be Kansas City. “To kind of get to that point now is pretty surreal,” Dressler said. The Chiefs didnt announce Dresslers signing until Friday, even though his name popped up on the leagues transaction report earlier in the week. Terms of his deal were not available. “Money wasnt a factor for me in this decision,” Dressler said. “Its a decision based on an opportunity I feel like I have a very good chance to make a football team.” . Miamis two-year reign was over. And Bosh almost sounded relieved. An excellent start from Drew Hutchison and the return of Jose Bautista helped provide a little breathing room in the divisional race while ending a three-game losing skid at the same time.PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin remains convinced linebacker LaMarr Woodley is an impact player when healthy. “Hes been solid,” Tomlin said. “Not only this season but over the course of his career.” Heres something else Woodley has become: injury prone. The Steelers placed Woodley on injured reserve Tuesday with a strained right calf, ending Woodleys season and perhaps his time patrolling the left side of Pittsburghs 3-4 defence. He limped off the field in the first quarter of Sundays 30-20 win over Cincinnati and did not return. Tomlin ruled Woodley out of this weekends game at Green Bay. With Pittsburgh (6-8) all but out of the playoff picture, the team moved Woodley to IR later to the day to give the club some roster flexibility. Pittsburgh signed journeyman linebacker Jamaal Westerman to take Woodleys spot on the 53-man roster, though quickly improving Jason Worilds will start in Woodleys place against the Packers (7-6-1). Woodley is in the third year of a six-year, $61.5 million contract he signed in August, 2011. The 29-year-old is scheduled to be Pittsburghs second-highest paid player next season behind quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, with a salary cap hit of $13.59 million. Considering the teams significant cap issues, the emergence of Worilds and rookie Jarvis Jones and Woodleys spotty healthy history, he could be expendable by the summer. Its a path that seemed unthinkable three years ago. Woodley appeared to be the next great Steelers linebacker after racking up 35 sacks from 2008-10, helping lead Pittsburgh two a pair of AFC championships and one Super Bowl title. The day he signed his extension in 2011, Woodley talked at length about wanting “to leave my stamp when Im done playing here.” His work is only half finished. Woodley hasnt played a full 16-game schedule since 2010. He missed six games in 2011 and three more in 2012 with hamstring issues. He appeared back to his usual self early this season, recording a sack in four straight games at one point. It all changed during a 23-10 win over Buffalo last month, when he tweaked his left calf. Despite saying repeatedly he felt optimistic aabout his chances, he spent three weeks on the sideline watching Worilds flourish in his absence.dddddddddddd Considered on the way out after the Steelers chose Jones in the first round of last Aprils draft, Worilds instead has blossomed. Following a slow start, he played so well the Steelers decided to make Jones a role player while giving Worilds the bulk of the playing time at right outside linebacker. Worilds moved to the left side, where he played in college, after Woodley went down and his production has skyrocketed. Worilds leads the Steelers with 7.0 sacks and has evolved into more than just a pass rush specialist. When Woodley returned against Miami two weeks ago, the Steelers actually moved him to the right side for the first time in his career so Worilds could continue to work on the left side. Though he will be a free agent after the season, Worilds wont come close to commanding the kind of money Woodley will be due if Woodley stays on the roster in 2014. Throw in the teams significant investment in Jones and Woodley could be part of a sizable roster makeover in the off-season if the Steelers miss the playoffs for the second straight year. While Tomlin agreed Jones needs to work on his upper body strength to deal with left tackles who outweigh him by 50 pounds or more, Tomlin is pleased with Jones progress. Jones has just one sack but has shown an ability to get around the ball. He batted down a Cincinnati 2-point conversion attempt last week, keeping the Bengals two scores behind. “Although his numbers might not be jumping off the page at you, I really think that hes settling in and playing harder and faster and displaying understanding at an increased rate every week,” Tomlin said. “I think thats an element of playing well and producing plays. Youve got to know what to do.” NOTES: Tomlin said defensive end Brett Keisel, who has missed four of the last five games with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, will “definitely” practice on Thursday and could play against the Packers. …. Nose tackle Steve McLendon, who has sat out the last two games with an ankle injury, is also expected to practice at some point. Dublin, Ohio – The 2013 edition of the Presidents Cup kicks off this week from Muirfield Village, the yearly PGA Tour stop for the Memorial Tournament. The U.S. is 7-1-1 all-time in the Presidents Cup, with wins in each of the last four matchups against the Internationals. Get set for the competition with the Presidents Cup Preview Show on TSN, today at 2pm et/11am pt. Tiger Woods has an impressive track record at Muirfield Village, posting five Memorial Tournament victories in his career. Steve Stricker and Matt Kuchar have also won the Memorial, in 2011 and 2013, respectively. Woods last won in 2012, giving the American team the last three winners, which is two more than the International team has combined. Ernie Els, who has played the most Presidents Cups for this International team, was the Memorial winner in 2004 and was runner-up in 2000. Guiding the teams will be Fred Couples for the Americans and Nick Price for the Internationals. Couples is in his third stint as captain, while Price is leading the Internationals for the first time. The strong American squad will be carrying four rookies into the competition, but the title seems hardly applicable to rising tour stars Brandt Snedeker, Jason Dufner, and Keegan Bradley. Jordan Spieth, the 20-year-old wunderkind came out of nowhere to capture his first PGA victory and finished 10th on the money list. Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Saskatchewan is competing for the International squad as a rookie and is the first Canadian to play in the event since Mike Weir did in 2009. Ranked 32nd in the world, DeLaet had a breakthrough season on tour by earning seven top-10 results and making the cut in 21 of 26 events. The International squad has five other rookies for this weeks event, including Louis Oosthuizen, Hideki Matsuyama, Branden Grace, Richard Sterne, and Captains Picks Marc Leishman and Brendon de Jonge. The format features six foursomes matches on Thursday, six four-ball matches on Friday, five foursomes matches and five four-ball matches on Saturday and 12 singles on Sunday. The first team to 17 1/2 wins the Presidents Cup, unless the match is deadlocked at the end of singles play, which occurred in 2003, resulting in a tie. Taking two in a row already seemed like a heady accomplishment. But three straight wins have the Sens wondering just how far the wave will take them. Clarke MacArthur scored the winning goal midway through the third period as the Senators beat the visiting Winnipeg Jets 4-3 on Thursday. Until Monday, when they beat the Washington Capitals 3-1, Ottawa hadnt even won back-to-back games in more than seven weeks. “I feel like finally getting that second (win) and finally getting momentum was huge for us,” said Mika Zibanejad, who had a goal and an assist. “We need to keep playing well and finding a way to win, and not just one game. Weve been talking about it and talking about it and it wont change until we do it. Weve been working hard and maybe some games we should have won but I think it pays off now and we have to keep it going.” Kyle Turris intercepted a clearing pass inside the Winnipeg zone and fed MacArthur, who then scored as he outwaited Winnipeg netminder Al Montoya before going top shelf to give the Senators a 4-2 lead. “It was nice to get rewarded at the end, but as far as the game goes, that was an important two points for us,” MacArthur said. “Weve got something rolling now with three in a row and theyre not all going to be pretty but at this time of the year and where the standings are well take anything we can get. When its 4-2 you want to keep it there but you just cant write the script.” Milan Michalek and Zack Smith also scored for the Senators (18-18-7), who have four wins in their past five games. Dustin Byfuglien, Evander Kane and Olli Jokinen scored for the Jets (19-19-5) while Montoya made 25 saves. Seconds after Smith gave the Senators a 3-2 lead on a deflection off a Marc Methot point shot at 6:42 of the third period, Craig Anderson maintained it with a glove save off Mark Scheifele who was alone in the slot to collect a rebound. Anderson can include that among his 32 saves in the game, but he would also be the first to give thanks to his goalposts who were there to bail him out three times, including once earlier in the third period when the game was still tied. “We didnt pressure, we didnt spend as much time as we wanted to in the other teams zone, but we had three posts that could have gone in.dddddddddddd Thats the way it goes sometimes,” Kane said. After MacArthur gave the Senators a 4-2 lead, Jokinen made the home crowd nervous by pulling the Jets to within a goal with a little more than five minutes to play. “I thought in the first period we played sideways in our zone but I thought in the second we were much better and played with more speed,” Jets coach Claude Noel said. “In the third we had good chances to win and I thought we played a fairly decent game although it wasnt one of our better ones.” The Jets entered the third period tied 2-2 thanks in part to the fact that they had help on both their goals from their opposition. Kane tied the game in the second minute of the second period from behind the net after he banked a shot off the back of Anderson and in. Seconds earlier Anderson had made a save on streaking Jets defenceman Jacob Trouba but was unable to get back into position in time to prevent the goal. Byfuglien scored the Jets first goal and that one tied the game 1-1 at 15:37 of the first when his shot was redirected past Anderson by Senators defenceman Joe Corvo. Slightly more than two minutes before that goal, Zibanejad had opened the scoring when he picked up a rebound off a Corvo shot and beat Montoya. Conacher actually got to the loose puck before Zibanejad but was only able to push the puck forward slightly. Both Zibanejad and Conacher were in on the go-ahead goal by Michalek in the final minute of the first period. Conacher sent a pass to Zibanejad who took a shot from the right faceoff circle. Montoya made a pad save but the puck went right to Michalek in the slot and then to the back of the net. NOTES: Scratches for the Senators were defencemen Eric Gryba and Patrick Wiercioch along with forward Chris Neil. For the Jets, defenceman Adam Pardy and forward Eric ODell were the scratches. … Anderson posted a 6-1-2 record in December with a 2.60 goals-against-average and a 9.21 save percentage. His 68 wins are four behind Ron Tugnutt for second all-time with the Senators. … Ottawa captain Jason Spezza missed his third straight game with a lower-body injury. … Heading into Thursdays game, Byfuglien led all NHL defencemen in shots on goal with 140. … Winnipeg captain Andrew Ladd is tied for the NHL lead with six shootout goals this season. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The NFL and personnel at MetLife Stadium had a Super Bowl pop quiz on snow removal less than two weeks before the title game between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. The league and stadium officials decided to use a winter storm that dumped a foot or more of snow in the New York City metropolitan area Tuesday as somewhat of a dress rehearsal to see how quickly they could clean the 80,000-seat facility that will hold the first outdoor Super Bowl in cold weather. NFL executive vice-president Eric Grubman said Wednesday an 18-hour time limit was set for removing the snow from the stadium, surrounding parking lots and access roads in the Meadowlands sports complex, where the game will be played Feb. 2. Grubman refused to speculate whether the storm that snarled roads, closed schools and had states of emergency in New Jersey, New York City and some surrounding areas would have caused the Super Bowl to be postponed. He said that would be a decision made by state authorities. Grubman, however, said the league has several contingency plans for the game, including moving it up to Friday or Saturday, pushing it back to Monday or adjusting the scheduled start on Sunday deal with the weather. The game is scheduled to start at 6:25 p.m. EST. “Based on the long-range forecast, all that I would even hazard to guess is that it is probably going to be cold. I doubt we are going to have an unusual warm spell,” Grubman said at the news conference originally called to showcase how the stadium was preparing for the Super Bowl. The snowstorm on Tuesday was a fortuitous coincidence for the cold-weather Super Bowl. MetLife spokeswoman Nicole Fountain said the stadium and its contractors had 1,300 workers removing the 13 inches of snow that fell in and around the stadium. The crews started removal at around 8 a.m. and had sections of the stadium and most of the tarp-covered field cleared by noon. During this past season, the crews removed six inches of wet, iced-packed snow in roughly 12 hours before a Seahawks-Giants game on Dec. 15, Ron VanDeVeen, the stadiums senior vice-president of events said Wednesday. The snow being removed Wednesday was not as heavy, he said. Grubman said the league is prepared to play the game even if there is still some snow in the stands. “Games are played with snow all the time,” he said. “Its not just MetLife Stadium. I think the crowd will be an exceptional crowd and they will enjoy the game. I dont think they will be fazed by a little bit of snow on their seats, if thats what comes to pass. We aim to not have that happen, but if it happens, its sort of what happens in NFL stadiums all the time.” Grubman also displayed warm welcome kits that fans will receive entering the stadium on game day. Cushions hold the kit items which included ear and hand muffs, mittens, a hat, neck warmers, lip balm and other items. “The warm welcome kit was designed to make fans comfortable,” he said, “and to have those last-minute items that they may not think about.” Grubman also advised fans to dress in layers for the game. He said there will be warming areas in the stadium should anyone need them. The storm that hit the area Tuesday stretched from Kentucky to New England. “If you are going to have one, and you are going to have it 10 days out, were going to make use of it,” Grubman said of the storm. “The silver lining is we are running ourselves through a rigorous dress rehearsal.” Grubman said the league was gathering information from law enforcement authorities about how the emergency conditions might have affected the game had it been played Tuesday. The two groups will go over the information soon. Whatever happens, the league is ready to deal with all scenarios, Grubman said. “Some people will say perfection will be a nice little dusting of snow in the third quarter,” Grubman said. "Other people will say perfection will be 40 degrees in early February with the sun shining until sundown at 5:35 or 5:45 or 6:20 on Sunday, the second. “I think it is really up to the individual.” .J. LONDON - England striker Wayne Rooney will return to former club Everton on Saturday looking to help Manchester United revive its stuttering Premier League title challenge at a ground where the team has struggled in recent seasons. United has slipped five points off the fierce pace set by Manchester City following a humbling 6-1 home defeat to its rival last weekend, which came a week after needing a late equalizer to rescue a 1-1 draw at Liverpool. Rooney missed last seasons fixture at Everton as United manager Alex Ferguson spared the striker a return to Goodison Park to protect him from the vitriol of the home fans following tabloid revelations about his private life. But Rooney, the leagues joint top scorer with nine goals, is unlikely to be missing this time around as United looks to recover from its first defeat of the season and claim a first win at Everton since 2007. “Its always a difficult game at Everton,” Ferguson said. "They all put a shift in and are always committed. “Its been a tough week for everyone. It was a bad result but we have to get over it. The fans, players, employees, staff – everyone was involved in the disappointment. We must kick on.” Rooney has been unable to maintain his sensational early season form, when he scored nine times in five games, and is without a league goal in his last four matches. “Hes had mixed success going to Everton,” Ferguson said. "Hes scored a couple of goals in previous games and gets booed as normal. “He got booked in one game and I took him off because … there was no way I was going to give the referee an opportunity to send him off. Thats where the hype around the ground in terms of him getting booed every time he makes a challenge comes into it.” Rooneys scoring drought has allowed City striker Sergio Aguero to become the leagues joint top goalscorer and the Argentina international will be confident of adding to his tally when the free-scoring league leaders host struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. City followed up its rout of United by powering to a 5-2 victory over Wolves in the last 16 of the League Cup on Wednesday. Wolves head into the return match of its four-day double-header against Roberto Mancinis team without a win in six games and languishing in 16th place, two points above the relegation zone. “The United game is past, its history. Now we must focus on Wolves,” Mancini said. "I remember the Arsenal team that went unbeaten (in the 2003-04 season) were very strong, an incredible team. I dont think we can do that this year. “Last year we lost at Wolves and here we won 4-3 but they had chances for 4-4 before the end. If we think we can play 50 per cent, not like against United, then we have a problem.” Chelsea, which is a point behind United in third and appears to be the only other team capable to halting the City juggernaut, looks to end a difficult week on a high when it hosts Arsenal in the standout match of the weekend. Club captain John Terry is at the centre of separate police and Football Association investigations following allegations he racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand in Chelseas 1-0 defeat to its London rival on Sunday. The club was also fined 20,000 pounds ($32,200) on Friday for the way its players surrounded referee Chris Foy after he sent off right back Jose Bosingwa in the game. Arsenal heads to Stamford Bridge on a high, having arrested its early-season slump to climb to seventh place on the back of three straight home wins in the league. Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said Friday that he had no qualms about playing Terry. “I see no reason why not,” the Portuguese coach said. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger must decide whether to play centre back Thomas Vermaelen, who has only recently returned from an ankle injury. Luis Suarez is a doubt for sixth-place Liverpools away match at West Bromwich Albion after limping off with an ankle in Wednesdays 2-1 win over Stoke in the League Cup fourth round, when the Uruguay striker scored both his teams goals. Also Saturday, its: Norwich vs. Blackburn, Sunderland vs. Aston Villa, Swansea vs. Bolton and Wigan vs. Fulham. On Sunday, Tottenham plays QPR at White Hart Lane while Mondays only game sees Stoke host fourth-place Newcastle. . NORTH BAY, Ont. — Jason Dickinson and Pius Suter had two goals each as the Guelph Storm routed the North Bay Battalion 10-1 on Wednesday to take a 3-1 lead in the Ontario Hockey League final. Scott Kosmachuk scored and had three assists for Guelph, while Kerby Rychel and Robby Fabbri had a goal and two assists apiece. Matt Finn, Zac Leslie and Tyler Bertuzzi chipped in as well. Goalie Justin Nichols made 22 saves for the win. “We have a lot guys chipping in, if one guy is not going one night the next guy is. You just have to work on keeping things simple and getting pucks in. Things are just clicking right now,” said Kosmachuk. Nick Paul was the lone scorer for North Bay. Jake Smith stopped 16-of-23 shots faced in 38:11 of work, while Brendan ONeill turned aside 15-of-18 shots in relief. “It was a disappointing loss, they got the jump on us early and we didnt recover from that and the game spiralled from that,” said North Bay coach Stan Butler. The Storm scored on two of their three power plays, while the Battalion could not convert any of their three man advantages. Guelph struck early, scoring three goals in the first frame, including two by Suter. The centre opened the scoring just four minutes into the game and added to the Storms lead with a short-handed goal at the tail end of the period to make it 3-0. The other goal came at the 11-minute mark from Kosmachuck. All told the Battalion were outshot 14-4 in the period. “We werent emotionally attached to the game early on. We seem to play better when we get intense and involved,” Guelph head coach Scott Walker said. “I thought the players did a heck of a job staying disciplined.” It didnt get much better for the home team in the second. Leslie scored on the Storms first shot on net and, just 90 seconds later, Dickinson blew the game wide open with his seventh of the playoffs. Smith was finally pulled from the Battalions net after Bertuzzi made it 7-0 with less than two minutes to go in the period. But ONeill didnt fare much better, surrendering a goal before the buzzer. “In playoffs youve got to have a very short memory, because if you dont youre going to dwell on things that are going to affect you going forward. Are we disappointed? Obviously. Are we upset? Extremely. Are we frustrated? No. We got to play a lot better on Friday night,” said Butler. North Bays lone bright spot was Pauls goal midway through the third. Rychel and Finn responded for the Storm in period. Game 5 is Friday in Guelph, Ont. “We have a very good leadership group in our room,” said Kosmachuk. “They know its not going to be easy. We have to be on our toes and play hard.” North Bay has already battled back in the playoffs after being down 3-1. They eliminated the Niagara IceDogs in seven games in the first round of the playoffs. The last time Guelph won the OHL championship was in 2004. Rios hit a game-ending grand slam in the 10th inning to lift Chicago to a 7-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Saturday. Rios one out, first-pitch shot off Chris Perez (3-7) was Chicagos first game-ending home run this season and his first career grand slam. “I assumed he was going to come (inside),” Rios said. “I guess I got the pitch and put a good swing on it. It worked.” The blast came after the White Sox loaded the bases with one out for the fifth time in the game. In each of the first four occasions, Chicago didnt score, leaving the bases full. The White Sox squandered bases-full situations in the first, sixth, eighth and ninth, and stranded 15 runners during the first nine innings before Rios snapped the streak in the 10th. “Sometimes you get in stretches where you have a hard time scoring runs,” Rios said. “I felt like we had one of those games today. We came through.” Rios, one of Chicagos highest-paid players, struck out with the bases full in the first inning and has struggled to a .222 average this season, making Saturdays triumph that much better. “It was great,” Rios said. “We battled through the whole game. It was a long game and to do that, its good. Any time you get a win, its good.” Chicago had plenty of baserunners all day, with 10 hits and a season-high 11 walks but went just 3 for 15 with runners in scoring position. “That (summed up) the White Sox season right there,” manager Ozzie Guillen said. "The only thing we did good is we won. “Im glad we won, but it was tough. When you see that over and over and over, whats going on? You missed a very interesting Sunday paper if we lose this game.” Alejandro De Aza doubled twice, walked and scored two runs for Chicago. Gordon Beckham had a double, two walks and two RBIs. Sergio Santos (4-4) threw a scoreless inning to get the win in relief. Santos combined with Chris Sale to strike out six straight batters during the late innings. Shelley Duncan doubled, homered and scored two runs for Cleveland. Matt LaPorta added a two-run double and Jim Thome singled twice. Indians starter Fausto Carmona allowed six hits and three runs in 5 1-3 innings, lowering his earned-run average to 9.14 in four starts against the White Sox this season. Perez took the loss and wasnt too happy about the circumstances that led up to it, especiially the walks.dddddddddddd “Very rarely you see major-league pitchers one through five have to struggle throwing strikes,” Perez said. “Well have our off-days here and there, but not our whole bullpen.” Chicagos Phil Humber was sharp in his six innings, holding Cleveland to two runs and striking out seven, but settled for a no-decision on Saturday after throwing just 73 pitches. “Thats not my call,” Humber said of the timing of his removal. "Obviously you want to be out there, but at the same time (Guillen) has been around a long time. Im never going to question the manager on that. “I feel great. I feel like today was the best Ive thrown in awhile.” The Indians went ahead on LaPortas two-run double in the fifth, snapping Humbers streak of 13 1-3 scoreless innings. LaPorta was making his first start for the Indians since Aug. 29, the day before he was sent down to Triple-A Columbus. Adam Dunn singled in the sixth, ending a string of 18 hitless at-bats, and started Chicagos rally. De Aza doubled off the centre-field wall, sending Dunn to third and Carmona to the showers after 103 pitches. Chad Durbin replaced Carmona and walked Brent Morel and Beckham, forcing in Dunn with the tying run. Juan Pierre singled in De Aza, giving Chicago a 3-2 lead. Duncan greeted reliever Jesse Crain with a homer to left-centre in the seventh, tying the score 3-all. Duncan has with five homers and 10 RBIs in seven games over the last week. But the hero was Rios, not a title hes been able to claim often this season. “If you win it in that fashion, it makes it a little more fun,” Rios said. “Every time you get a win, its important.” NOTES: First base umpire Ed Rapuano had to leave the game in the fourth inning because of a sore neck. Indians RHP Josh Tomlin (elbow) is doing “very well” with his throwing program and the team is leaning toward not shutting him down, manager Manny Acta said. … DH Travis Hafner (foot) ran the bases on Saturday but Acta said there is still no timetable on his return. 3B Jack Hannahan (calf strain) will rejoin the Indians in Texas, though Acta is not sure when hell return to game action. The Indians will send Ubaldo Jimenez to the mound for Sundays series finale against Chicago rookie Zach Stewart. Jimenez is 2-1 with a 5.56 ERA since he was acquired from Colorado on July 31. Stewart is coming off a one-hit shutout of Minnesota on Sept. 5 in which he carried a perfect game into the eighth inning. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox reinstated ace Chris Sale from the 15-day disabled list before Thursdays start against the New York Yankees. An All-Star the past two seasons, Sale went on the disabled list April 22 with a flexor strain in his left arm. He allowed one run and one hit in seven innings against Boston on April 17 in his previous start, throwing a career-high 127 pitches, and reported he was sore the next day. Sale was 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA in four starts before Thursdays game. Owens was roughed up in Torontos 20-9 defeat to Montreal on Tuesday, needing treatment twice after hurting his neck and taking a hard shot to the abdomen. In other news from Fridays practice, Jerious Norwood took most of the snaps at running back for Curtis Steele. Norwood also did some returning, although Milanovich said returns would likely be done by committee.TORONTO – Once he got going, no one could calm Jonas Valanciunas down, despite Kyle Lowrys best efforts. As Valanciunas was whistled for a rare technical toward the end of the third quarter – a result of waving his hand at an official after being called for a foul – Lowry pulled the Raptors sophomore aside, corralling him by his jersey and patting him on the back. “Youve got to be smart in certain situations,” Lowry told the young centre. “I just tried to say look, you cant waste your money.” “Yeah, he was trying to calm me down,” Valanciunas said of the conversation with his point guard, speaking with a mischievous look on his face following the Raptors 98-91 win over the Cavaliers. “That technical foul cost me, so I feel bad now.” He shouldnt. The tech will cost Valanciunas a small fraction of his next paycheque but the unbridled emotion he played with in the second half of Fridays game was the driving force of Torontos rapid turnaround. Valanciunas, like the rest of his team, got off to an ugly start. The Raptors were fortunate to be down by only five going into the break, scoring just 39 points in the first half and shooting 33 per cent from the field. For the third straight game coming out of the All-Star break, Valanciunas got a quick hook in the first quarter. The seven-footer has been strangely quiet of late, averaging under six points in four games entering Fridays contest. His minutes have been down, as hes battled growing pains on the defensive end. After being sent to the bench midway through the opening quarter, he sat for around 12 minutes of game time before re-entering. Somewhere, somehow, someone lit a fire under the sophomore and not only did it spark him, it ignited the whole team. Valanciunas was a possessed man coming out of the halftime break. He was aggressive on defence, manic on the boards and dominant down low. He ran the floor with a purpose, worked to establish position, then demanded the ball. As he turned to face up Clevelands Tyler Zeller midway through the third, he pump faked – not once, but twice – took the contact and drained the jumper. Before completing the three-point play, he pumped his fist in the air and yelled out to the crowd, or the Cavs, or his teammates, or whoever was listening. His face was as red as the logo at centre court. He meant business. “Hes going to have ups and downs but tonight he was intense,” Lowry said of Valanciunas, who had 10 points and four rebounds in the third quarter, finishing the game with 18 points and eight boards. “He really kind of carried us with his intensity and his passion and fire tonight.” The 21-year-olds inspired play lifted the Raptors in what turned out to be a game-deciding third quarter. Toronto scored 37 points in the frame – two fewer than its first-half total – and shot 70 per centt, turning a five-point deficit at intermission into an 11-point advantage going into the fourth.dddddddddddd. “Hes our enforcer in the paint,” said Amir Johnson, who returned to the starting lineup Friday after coming off the bench in his two previous outings, nursing an ankle injury. “When he gets going, everybody else plays good and that just gets everybody open shots when hes scoring in the paint.” Johnson also came to life in the second half, the two bigs even hooked up on an alley-oop lob – from Johnson to Valanciunas – late in game. “We had to give our bigs a wakeup call,” Dwane Casey said. “They turned it around in the second half. We reminded them, theres more to the game than the offensive end.” “You can do a lot of different things other than make shots,” he continued, “and I thought the second half, Amir Johnson and JV worked at it and got it done.” Although Valanciunas helped turn the game, the best Raptor on the night – from start to finish – was fellow sophomore Terrence Ross, hands down. Ross scored a team-high 20 points, shooting 9-for-18, but his most important contribution was on the defensive end, where he went toe-to-toe with All-Star Game MVP Kyrie Irving. When the game began, Ross was assigned to check former Raptor Jarrett Jack while Lowry defended Irving. Early in the first quarter, there was a switch and Ross ended up on the Cavs point guard and leading scorer. It stuck for the rest of the evening, and Ross did not disappoint. The Raptors forward used his length and athleticism to frustrate Irving, forcing him to launch tough perimeter jumpers, keeping him out of the paint and holding him to 3-of-16 shooting. “He can score in a lot of different ways [and] get his teammates involved,” Ross said of Irving, who ended up with 17 points and nine assists for Cleveland. “So if you slow him down, you slow the team down.” “He had to chase [Irving] everywhere,” Johnson said of Ross. “He chased him off screens, he didnt quit on plays and thats how you have to play a guy like that. [Irvings] so crafty and hes always moving so you just have to keep a body on him and stay in front of him. [Ross] did a great job.” It was Canada Basketball Night at the Air Canada Centre Friday, as local product and first overall pick Anthony Bennett made his NBA debut in Toronto. Bennett, who continues to improve after a slow start to the season, knocked down his first two shots and finished with nine points in 15 minute of action while fellow Canadian Tristan Thompson scored 13 to go along with nine boards. In snapping Clevelands six-game winning streak, the Raptors picked up their 30th win of the campaign, doing so in just 55 games. It took them 78 contests to reach the 30-win mark a year ago. Dan Henderson won the first battle with Mauricio (Shogun) Rua at UFC 139, but it appears the war is not over yet. UFC officials have confirmed Fight Night 38 will feature the mixed martial arts legends on March 24, 2014. The rematch — first reported by Brazilian news outlet Tatame on Tuesday — will headline the card in Brazil airing on Fox Sports 1. Henderson (29-11) scored the victory over Rua by unanimous decision on Nov. 19, 2011 in what was regarded as the fight of the year. It is also considered one of the organizations top fights of all time. Rua (22-8) is six and a half weeks removed from his first win in three months. The former light heavyweight champion knocked out James Te Huna last December after falling twice in a row to top light heavyweight contenders Alexander Gustafsson and Chael Sonnen. Henderson recently signed a new contract with the UFC after ending his old deal on a three-fight losing streak. His last victory came against Rua before an injury forced him out of a title shot against Jon Jones, followed by defeats at the hands of Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evan and Vitor Belfort. Former NHL player Alex Kovalev has announced his retirement. Kovalev last played in the NHL with the Florida Panthers during the 2012-13 season and spent last season with Swiss second-tier team EHC Visp. According to the International Ice Hockey Federations website, Kovalev made the announcement in an interview with Swiss TV station Kanal9. He cited injuries as the reason for his decision. The 41-year-old Russian native was selected by the New York Rangers with the 15th overall pick of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft and joined the team for the 1992-93 season. He then helped the Rangers end a 54-year Stanley Cup drought the following year, posting 21 points in 23 playoff games. Kovalev spent his first six-plus seasons with the Rangers, then was traded to Pittsburgh and played with the Penguins until the 2002-03 campaign when he was sent back to New York. He also played with Montreal and Ottawa before rejoining Pittsburgh late in the 2010-11 season and signed with the Panthers in January 2013. In 1,316 NHL regular-season games, most of any Russian-born player, Kovalev notched 430 goals and 599 assists for 1,029 points. He added 45 goals and 55 assists for 100 points in 123 playoff games. On the international level, Kovalev won Olympic gold at the 1992 Games in Albertville and bronze at the 2002 Salt Lake Games. The 42-year-old Gordon is in no hurry to slow down. But he said he hopes he has found some solutions to the back woes that nearly forced him out of NASCARs longest race. Gordon cut short his practice runs last week because of back spasms and there was some concern whether or not he would be able to race. Regan Smith was on standby and Gordon needed treatment after the practice session. But he wound up in his familiar seat behind the wheel of the No. 24 and finished seventh, his ninth top-10 finish in 12 races this season. Gordon knows consistent, shooting pain like he suffered at Charlotte Motor Speedway could drive him toward an early retirement. “I can tell you, if that happens many more times, I wont have a choice,” Gordon said Friday at Dover Motor Speedway. Gordon had soreness Monday and Tuesday, though that didnt deviate too much from how he would feel after driving 600 grueling miles. He said his back is not at 100 per cent, and probably never will be behind the wheel. At Daytona this year, Gordon insisted he was serious about considering retirement should he win a fifth champioonship.dddddddddddd. He looks every bit a title contender — he has a win and holds the points lead — and gutting out Charlotte proved to his Hendrick Motorsports team “its going to take a lot to get us down.” Gordon suffered serious issues years ago in his back, specifically his lower spine, and needed anti-inflammatory medication and workouts with a trainer to return to full strength. He drove in pain during a winless 2008 season and briefly contemplated retirement. For all his back woes, Gordon said he never felt the stabbing pain there like he did last weekend. Gordon said hell make adjustments to his race weekend routine to keep his back loose to withstand hours crunched in a stock car. He needs to stay active and not sit during lengthy breaks in practice and qualifying. Gordon sat more than three hours last week between practice and qualifying, a gap that left he believed led his creaky back to a breakdown. “Once that happened, there was nothing that was going to fix it until I had those injections on Saturday,” he said. Gordon has no standby driver at Dover. He felt fine on Friday. But once inside the No. 24, all bets are off. “Its just something I continue to learn and push through,” he said. “Its no big deal.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Kerry, I hope you address Ron MacLeans comment during the second intermission of Game 4 in Montreal-Tampa series. Basically, he suggested that the NHL should not have used a referee from Quebec, following the Game 3 disputed non-goal, because the referee could be biased towards Montreal. Thank you,Bobby Dodd -- Hi Kerry, On Tuesday, the host of the other playoff broadcaster said that a referee from the area should not have been assigned Game 4 of the Tampa-Montreal series after a controversial call Sunday involving another francophone Quebec referee. Do you agree with that sentiment? Coming off a game like Sundays, should that have been done if it was an official from Ontario for a Leafs game? Or a referee from B.C. for a Canucks game? Jamie Walker Bobby, Jamie and to all Canadians: Ron MacLean offered a very contrite apology for his initial inappropriate comments during a follow-up segment in the Hockey Night In Canada broadcast when he said, “First of all, I want to say Im sorry. Its divisive any time you become about French and English in our country. But I didnt intend to go down that path.” We all need to accept Ron MacLeans apology. I have always had the utmost respect for Ron and his sincere apology speaks to the quality of the man more than the personality you see on camera. I know what Ron intended, even though it came out all wrong. There have been many times when the NHL felt the need to alter an officials assignment in an effort to manage a regular season or playoff series based on an incident that took place in a previous game. I called Director of Officiating Bryan Lewis one time when there was a overlap in the assignment process that would have resulted in me working six of seven road games for the Montreal Canadiens. It was just an assignment glitch that was quickly adjusted to avoid overexposure of a referee to one team. Another time, VP of Hockey Ops Brian Burke assigned me as a last-minute addition in a Habs-Flyers game after Lyle Odelein threatened to get Eric Lindros following a fight between the two players in the first game of a home and home series. I was also reassigned to work a return grudge match between Ottawa and the Leafs following a major battle they had a couple of nights earlier in Toronto. In the 2004 Stanley Cup Final between Calgary and Tampa, an initial assignment schedule for the refs was doomed to fail from the very beginning. The referee pairings of Bill McCreary/Stephen Walkom and Brad Watson and I were assigned to work all of our games in the same venue. (Watson and I were assigned to Games 3, 4 and 6 in Calgary while the other crew was in Tampa for 1, 2 and 5). Series traditionally heat up as they progress and it was a suicide mission to have the same refs work in the same venue. Following Game 5 in Tampa a meeting was held in the officials room and I was informed by Colin Campbell and then Director of Officiating Andy Van Hellemond that Brad Watson and I were off Game 6 in Calgary. Nobody informed Brad Watson and he learned of the change the next day at the Denver Airport when Wats overhead members of the media talking about the assignment change as they were connecting onto his flight to Calgary! I returned to work Game 7 in Tampa with Bill McCreary. These kinds of adjustments in the assignment process are reasonable and necessary at times. Ron MacLean, as a referee himself, would certainly understand this type of logic. What Ron should have thought of before he embarked down a self-admitted “divisive” path is that whenever he pulls on his striped jersey, hes no longer from his hometown or even a star television host. In that moment, and in the performance of his duties, Ron is an impartial, unbiased referee that is empowered to place his integrity and that of the game on the line. He cares not what teams are playing or if they are from the town that he lives in. It matters not to Ron what colour their team jerseys are or the crest on the front. It is his duty as a “referee” to perform to the very best of his ability without prejudice or bias. I know that Ron MacLean performs those duties without question every time he pulls on that striped jersey. NHL officials are no different in this regard. When they pull on stripes they are professional people with strong character and integrity. They too perform their duties to the best of their ability and are paid to be impartial. We can criticize an official for a poor call or even our perception of their level of competency. What should never be brought into question is any perceived bias based on where an official might make his home or his family heritage. The referee in Ron MacLean understands these facts as well as I do. Ron – a consummate professional and a man of character and integrity – sincerely apologized for his slip up and brief act of misconduct. As such Ron needs to be forgiven. Time to move forward. After two holes, Casey had the lead to himself at Muirfield Village, and that was only the start of another big day. He took advantage of the par 5s for another 6-under 66, giving him a three-shot lead over Masters champion Bubba Watson going into the weekend. McIlroy, whose 63 was the lowest first round in the 39-year history of the tournament, was barely in the picture. He was 15 shots worse with a 78, courtesy of three straight double bogeys and his fourth straight PGA Tour event with a nine-hole score of 40 or higher. McIlroy went from a three-shot lead to nine shots behind. “To be honest, I thought I was going to be playing a round to try and maybe catch a couple of guys,” Casey said. “I woke up checking the scores to see what Rory was going to be. Thats really what I was going to be doing — see how many under I was going to have to try to shoot to chase. Obviously, that didnt happen.” Casey, taking another step on a long road back from injuries that nearly derailed his career, was at 12-under 132. He made his first birdie with his best drive of the day on the par-5 11th, setting up a 4-iron onto the green for a two-putt birdie. He made eagle on the par-5 15th hole for the second straight day, and he stuffed it close around the turn for birdies to start pulling away from the field. Watson gave him a good run in an active round that featured six birdies, five bogeys and an eagle. He only was angry at a few shots where he failed to concentrate. Even so, a bogey-bogey finish wasnt enough to entirely ruin his day. Watson has never finished better than 23rd in eight previous appearances. “I cant look at the bogeys,” Watson said. “Ive got to look at where Im at. If you told me its my best two days around this golf course, Id take it.” Chris Kirk (70) was four shots behind. Hideki Matsuyama (67) and Martin Flores (68) were five back. Adam Scott, who won Colonial in his debut at No. 1 in the world, shot 70 and was at 5-under 139, still in the mix depending on how Casey fares on the weekend. Phil Mickelson was happy to get in two more rounds. He shot a 70, though he was 10 shoots back.dddddddddddd Canadian Mike Weir failed to make the cut after an even par 72 on Friday to finish 1-over through two days. Casey, once a Ryder Cup regular who reached as high as No. 3 in the world, is slowly getting his game and his life back in the right place. He endured injuries to his shoulder and his toe that kept him winless for more than two years. He went through a divorce. He wondered if he would ever return to the brand of golf he was capable of playing. Weeks like this offer promise. Casey won the Irish Open a year ago with what he called “spectacular” golf. The game is still there. “Its slowly crawling along and making progress, climbing back up the ladder, however you want to phrase it,” Casey said. "Its very difficult when youve played to a certain level and then … I genuinely had no clue how to play to that level. “Luckily, I didnt think about that too long.” His life is back in order. Casey is married to British television presenter Pollyanna Woodward. They are expecting their first child (a boy) in September. He talks about having perspective, knowing where golf fits on his list of whats important. His golf has looked familiar over the last two days. McIlroy could say the same. Except for last week at the BMW PGA Championship in England, which he won with birdies on the last two holes, McIlroys good golf has been stalled by bad patches, and Friday was no exception. In fact, it nearly has become the rule. He shot a 43 on the back nine — he started the round at No. 10 — making this the fourth consecutive PGA Tour event where he shot at least 40 over nine holes. All of them have been in the second round. McIlroy twice hit the trees on the 13th hole and made double bogey. He hit into the water on the 14th for double bogey. And then he double-hit a wedge on the 15th to make it three straight double bogeys. “These little runs Im getting on where it gets away from me, I was able to avoid that last week,” McIlroy said. “Not so much this week. Even though I had such a bad day, Im still in with a chance depending on what the guys do this afternoon. So going into the weekend, not exactly where I want to be. But it could be worse.” Casey simple made it a lot harder. cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

NEW YORK — Dallas Stars forward Ryan Garbutt was fined $1,474 — the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement — by the NHL on Saturday for spearing Anaheim Ducks forward Corey Perry in the groin Friday night. Garbutt was given a major penalty for spearing and a game misconduct midway through the first period in the Stars 6-2 loss at Anaheim. “I was just coming back to the bench and got careless with my stick,” Garbutt said. “It was deliberate,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau countered. “It wasnt an accident. It was pretty dirty.” The Ducks lead the first-round playoff series 3-2. . The 23-year-old from Hamilton leads the NCAA with 39 assists in 38 games and is second in points with 57. As a junior last season, he was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as the top NCAA mens hockey player when he had 51 points in 38 games. Kenneth Faried had a career-high 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who denied the Clippers their sixth win in seven games. Ty Lawson, who missed the last four games with a shoulder injury, added 27 points and J.J. Hickson had 17 points and 12 rebounds. DeAndre Jordan had 19 points and 12 rebounds. It was his team record 28th consecutive game with at least 10 rebounds. Jamal Crawford added 19 points for the Clippers, who fell to 0-11 on the road when trailing after the third quarter. No more than five points separated the teams in the third quarter with the Nuggets taking an 82-81 lead into the fourth quarter when Quincy Miller stole the ball from Crawford and swept down the court for a layup, beating the buzzer. With 3:37 left, Griffin made two free throws to put the Clippers up 107-101 but the Nuggets scored eight straight points, getting six on free throws, and went in front by two. The Clippers answered, regaining the lead on a fast-break dunk by Griffin 111-109. Two free throws by Lawson re-tied it at 111-all with 1:21 left. Though the Clippers led by as many as 13 points early on, the teams battled to a 60-all tie at the half. Barnes and Darren Collison finished consecutive fastbreaks with layups to give the Clippers a 55-46 lead with 2:46 left in the second quarter. Chandler answered with a 3-pointer that was offset by a three-point play by Griffin, who then drew a foul, his third, while guarding Foye. Griffin spent the final couple minutes of the second quarter on the bench, during which the Nuggets closed with an 11-2 burst, including a jumper by Lawson with 29.7 seconds remaining that evened the score at the half. ARLINGTON, Texas — Maybe theres a little Lonnie Baseball to go with Johnny Football in Cleveland. Lonnie Chisenhall left quite an impression in Johnny Manziels home state. Chisenhall had nine RBIs and three home runs in a five-hit game, Michael Brantley scored five times and the Cleveland Indians beat the Texas Rangers 17-7 Monday night. “I know a day like today is kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” said Chisenhall, who raised his batting average to .385 but needs more plate appearances to quality for the league lead. “Im enjoying it as much as I can. I dont know the history of it, whos done it in the past.” The history is pretty exclusive. Major League Baseball said it was the first time a player went 5 for 5 with three homers and nine RBIs, since the RBI became a statistic in 1920. He also is only the fourth big leaguer to have at least five hits, nine RBIs and three homers in a game - first since Bostons Fred Lynn in 1975, according to STATS. “He just wasnt missing,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said, who team is winless in the past seven series at home. “Breaking balls, fastballs, it didnt matter.” The only other nine-RBI game in Cleveland history was by Chris James in a 20-6 victory over Oakland on May 4, 1991. Chisenhall, who had the second multihomer game of his career, finished 10 for 17 with four homers and 13 RBIs in a trip to Texas that ended with Clevelands first road winning streak of the season. Before his third homer, Chisenhall and Jason Kipnis danced in the dugout together during a brief break after home plate umpire Jim Wolf was knocked out of the game when he was hit in the mask by a foul ball. Maybe they knew what was coming. “As hard as it is to beat those dance moves, his swing was prettier,” Kipnis said. “Hes attacking the ball right now, and hes swinging at the right pitches and hes learning about himself as a hitter. Right now, hes in one of those zones when he attacks and hes just not missing.” The Indians won three straight in the four-game set after coming to the Lone Star State with the worst road record in the majors. Theyre headed to Kansas City to continue the first of three 10-game trips this season. Cleveland hit five homers, won for the ninth time in 10 games and pulled within two games of Detroit just three weeks after trailing by 10 1/2.Chisenhall had two-run homers in the second and fourth innings before hitting a three-run shot down the right field line in the eighth to give the Indians a 17-6 lead. It was his second homer off Texas reliever Scott Baker, who was trying to give the Rangers a long outing but allowed 11 hits and nine runs in five innings. “I mean, hes fouled off about four pitches were out of the strike zone and then just gets something that he can handle,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. “He feels good about himself. Again, Im stating the obvious.” Chisenhall had the first three-homer game for the Indians since Sept. 17, 2010, by Shin-Soo Choo, who now plays for the Rangers. The left-handed hitter had an RBI single in the first and a run-scoring double in the sixth. The homers and RBIs were career highs for Chisenhall. He had five hits earlier this season at Toronto. Texas right-hander Nick Martinez (1-3) gave up eight runs in two innings in a matchup of rookie starters. Cleveland left-hander T.J. House didnt make it to the fifth inning and missed a chance for his first major league win despite taking a 9-1 lead into the third. Scott Atchison (3-0) pitched 1 2-3 scoreless innings. Brantley tied his career high with his 10th home run for a 10-4 lead in the fourth and reached base all five times. George Kottaras had the other Cleveland homer, his third. Texas Alex Rios, who went 2 for 4 and is the ALs top hitter at .335, had his league-leading eighth triple, driving home Adrian Beltre in the third. Michael Choice hit his third homer in the past five games, giving him six for the season. Jason Kipnis had three singles and four RBIs for the Indians, including a two-run single in a five-run second inning. NOTES: The others with five hits, three homers and 9 RBIs since 1920, according to STATS, were Gil Hodges for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950 against the Boston Braves and Walker Cooper for Cincinnati against the Chicago Cubs in 1949. … Chisenhalls outburst was the first with at least three homers and nine RBIs in the majors since the Yankees Alex Rodriguez had three homers and 10 RBIs against the Los Angeles Angels on April 26, 2005. Driven as ever, Williams won plenty this year. She went 78-4 with 11 titles, including at the French Open and U.S. Open, raising her Grand Slam championship total to 17. She compiled a 34-match winning streak. She earned more than $12 million in prize money, a record for womens tennis. In February, she became the oldest No. 1 in WTA rankings history and never left that perch. Thanks to all of that, Williams was honoured Wednesday as The Associated Press 2013 Female Athlete of the Year. Its the third AP award for Williams, following 2002 and 2009. Only two women have been chosen more often as AP Athlete of the Year since the annual awards were first handed out in 1931. “Whenever I lose, I get more determined, and it gives me something more to work toward,” Williams told the AP in an interview shortly before the start of the U.S. Open. “I dont get complacent, and I realize I need to work harder and I need to do better and I want to do better — or I wouldnt keep playing this game.” The vote by news organizations was about as lopsided as many of Williams matches this season. She received 55 of 96 votes, while Brittney Griner, a two-time AP Player of the Year in college basketball and the No. 1 pick in Aprils WNBA draft, finished second with 14. Swimmer Missy Franklin was next with 10. The Male Athlete of the Year recipient will be announced Thursday. Williams, who grew up in Compton, Calif., and turned 32 in September, produced the finest womens tennis season in years. According to the WTA: — her .951 winning percentage was the best since Steffi Grafs .977 in 1989; — her 11 titles were the most since Martina Hingis 12 in 1997; — her winning streak was the longest since her sister, Venus, had a 35-match run in 2000. “She just continues to be an inspiration to American tennis,” said Gordon Smith, the executive director of the U.dddddddddddd. Tennis Association, which runs the U.S. Open. “Her year this year? Unforgettable.” By adding a fifth career U.S. Open championship, and a second French Open title, Williams also moved within one Grand Slam trophy of the 18 apiece won by Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. The record is 24 by Margaret Court. Pretty heady company. Evert is one of the only two women with more AP awards than Williams. Evert won four from 1974-80, while Babe Didrikson collected a record six — one for track in 1932, and five for golf from 1945-54. “Serena already has provided significant contributions to taking our sport to the next level. … She is chasing records and no doubt will break many records before shes finished,” WTA Chairman Stacey Allaster said. “That obviously just brings a lot more attention to our sport.” Two particular moments in 2013 stuck out to Allaster. One came at Qatar in February, when Williams cried after assuring herself of returning to No. 1 for the first time since 2010, the year the American needed two operations on her right foot and got blood clots in her lungs. “You could see the joy, the tears of joy. It meant so much to her, from everything she had been through, to be able to be back at the top of the sport, a sport that she does truly love,” Allaster said. The second moment came during Wimbledon, when Williams joined other women who have been ranked No. 1 at a celebration of the WTAs 40th anniversary. “It was an opportunity to see her in a leadership position. … She did a remarkable job at speaking on behalf of all those great athletes and speaking to future players,” Allaster said. “Theres a little girl, perhaps out there in Compton, who is dreaming of playing on the WTA, and Serena said, Were waiting for you, and we cant wait to meet you.” cheap nfl jerseys ’ ’ ’

Got a question on the latest news and rumours? E-mail Hockey Insider Darren Dreger and hell answer your emails at dregereport@tsn.ca! Hi Darren, I am a long time Sharks fan who is getting absolutely sick of watching my team roll over and die come playoff time. Yes, they made it to the conference finals the past couple of years (not including this one obviously), but lets be real – Chicago and Vancouver walked all over them. I have always felt that the majority of the team lacked the heart, tenacity, and effort needed to clear the last hurdle and get to the finals. Further, they lacked discipline and speed to keep up with the big boys in the conference. Personally, I am hoping for some major changes as the current core group isnt getting the job done when it matters most. Realistically, what should we expect from Doug Wilson this summer? Who stays, who goes, and do you think any big name players will be added via trade (e.g., Nash) or free agency (e.g., Parise)? Thanks for your time Darren! Sincerely,Scott A: Scott, its possible Wilson once again attacks his core in an effort to push this team over the hump, but it seems unlikely. Thornton, Couture, Pavelski, Clowe, Havlat and Boyle are all important pieces and contractually, in some cases, hard to move. Likewise for Patrick Marleau, whose name I purposely excluded from the list for sake of further discussion. Marleaus future is questioned on an annual basis and always in the days after the Sharks are eliminated from the playoffs. Hes a proven 30-goal man, but expectation has never matched reality in terms of his overall production. Marleau has a no-trade/no move clause and will earn $6.9 million per for the next two seasons. Its hard to imagine Marleau could convince his family to move to Columbus to help facilitate a trade for Rick Nash and the only way this should be considered as even a remote possibility is to include a third team getting involved, providing Marleau with a more attractive opportunity both personally and professionally. Again…not likely. Wilson is a very active GM and I have no doubt he will make appropriate gestures in free agency if either Ryan Suter or Zach Parise choose to go that route, but to add another salary at $7 million or more will require additional moves to make financial sense. I dont think its ever fair to question the heart of an NHL player, but in Round 1, it was clear the St. Louis Blues were willing to pay a price the Sharks couldnt – or werent prepared to – match. Darren, What do you think was Paul MacLeans logic putting Jakub Silfverberg in the Sens lineup in their first-round series? He may have been a good player overseas, but had no playing time this year with the Sens or Baby Sens! Chris,Ottawa A: Chris, no sense second-guessing now. Ottawa battled hard and pushed the top team in the East to the brink of elimination. Silfverberg was a standout player in both the Swedish Elite Leagues regular season and playoffs and Sens GM Bryan Murray says he worked hard to convince the young Swede to stay in Ottawa last fall, but Silfverberg wanted to return to his home country for one more year. MacLean was hoping for a little spark from Silfverberg. Why not throw something at the Rangers they probably werent planning on or expecting? When you have injuries, or players playing hurt, which is the norm this time of year, confident and creative coaches will find ways to inject new blood into their lineup. Its easy to say now MacLeans decision to dress Silfverberg was sketchy, but given the fact he had made the team out of training camp and followed that up with a stellar year in the SEL, it was a risk worth taking. Hi Darren, Do you think Tim Thomas has played his last game with the Bruins? And do you see them making a lot of changes this year or not a lot because so many of their players werent producing? Jeff A: Jeff, gut instinct tells me yes – Thomas has likely played his last game with the Bruins. The 38-year-old has one year remaining at $5 million (cap hit) and contractually, cant be traded before July 1 without consent. My view is the Bruins see Tuukka Rask as being ready to handle the challenge of being a No. 1. Hes paid his dues and will be more affordable than Thomas, which given the Bruins payroll next season ($59 million-plus), GM Peter Chiarelli is going to have to spend his money wisely. Rask, whos scheduled to become a restricted free agent, will get a beefy raise on the $1.25 million he earned this season. In 23 games, Bostons backup posted an impressive .929 save percentage providing further evidence hes good to go. There will be changes in Boston aside from goaltending. Chiarelli has seven unrestricted free agents to deal with including veterans, Joe Corvo, Gregory Campbell and Chris Kelly. Campbell and Kelly will very likely return, but there will be a natural turnover based on expiring contracts. Hey Dregs, Were not hearing much from Montreal about where theyre at with the GM search, but do you buy into the fan theory that the new GM will have to have Patrick Roy as the new head coach? Sarah Shaw,Toronto A: Sarah, give credit to the four-man hiring committee in Montreal for doing an excellent job of keeping this process low key and hidden from public scrutiny. Its my understanding progress in the search for a GM is being made and a final decision and subsequent announcement may be only days away. As for Patrick Roy, I dont believe for a second the hiring of the general manager in any way is connected to Patrick Roy as Montreals next head coach. At the beginning of this search, my sources stated the new GM would be given the freedom to determine Randy Cunneyworths fate and ultimately, his successor on the Canadiens bench. Roy would be an excellent candidate as would Marc Crawford or perhaps Alain Vigneault if the Vancouver Canucks opt for a coaching change. More on that below. Hey Darren, So it looks like Bobby Lu is heading out of Van City, we all know its just a matter of time and the Luongo ultimately has a choice of teams to go to, my question is what can the Canucks expect back in return for him other then cap space, as it looks like there are some teams around the league that do have interest in his services! Monica Marques A: Hi Monica. I dont see any way Roberto Luongo returns to the Canucks. By starting Cory Schneider in three consectuive first round playoff games, the message to Luongo was delivered and received. Schneider is the goalie this team believes in and intends to move forward with. Luongo isnt going to kick up a fuss or stomp his feet on the way out of town, but he is going to have considerable input into where a trade will move his family. Obviously, his mega-term contract is going to have a negative impact on the number of teams interested, but its hard to imagine Toronto, Chicago, Tampa Bay and perhaps Florida wont be among them. Cap space for the Canucks will dictate the return, but the true contenders for Luongo will appreciate his value covers the next 3-5 years. After that, the contract and $5.3 million cap hit becomes an anchor. For this reason, Vancouver may have to take a bad contract back…along with a young asset and draft pick likely included. Ranger was taken off the ice on a stretcher late in the first period of Tampa Bays 5-3 victory after being injured on a hit from behind along the back boards. He was lying motionless face down on the ice before being tended to by trainers and medical personnel. Killorn was given a five-minute boarding major and a game misconduct. “Pretty unfortunate,” Killorn said following the game. “Happy that he is okay, I heard through the PR and stuff that he is doing all right now. Its kind of a scary moment, one of those plays where I commit to hit someeone without knowing if they are going to turn, so its just an unfortunate play.dddddddddddd” Ranger was taken to hospital for a precautionary assessment and the Leafs later stated he was in stable condition, conscious and alert. He was released from hospital Wednesday night and was back at the Air Canada Centre on Thursday, a good indication that he passed all necessary tests. Ranger, 29, was sidelined for nearly a month last season with concussion symptoms while playing with the AHLs Toronto Marlies. He was in the midst of his first NHL season after nearly three years away from the game for personal reasons. The Whitby, Ont. native has four goals and eight assist through 48 games this season.
