OAKLAND, Calif. — With the Texas rotation ravaged by injuries early in the season, Martin Perez has more than filled the void. Perez pitched his second consecutive shutout to extend his scoreless innings streak to 26 and the Texas Rangers wrapped up a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 3-0 victory Wednesday. “Hes been the glue,” manager Ron Washington said. “Hes held it together. Hes the one guy in that rotation whos been in it from last year who hasnt had a blip yet.” The Rangers have been without Yu Darvish, Matt Harrison and Colby Lewis already at times this season but still find themselves in first place thanks to some strong play from fill-ins and major improvement from Perez. Perez (4-0) outpitched Sonny Gray (3-1) in a heralded matchup of emerging stars, allowing just three hits and two walks in his first start since throwing a three-hitter against the White Sox for his first career shutout. “I dont want to think too much about my ERA and the games that Ive thrown before,” Perez said. “Im going to focus on my game today. We had a great game.” Perez, who also threw eight scoreless innings against Houston on April 13, is the first Rangers pitcher to have three straight scoreless starts since Kenny Rogers had four straight over 30 innings in 2005. Perez also joined Charlie Hough in 1983 as the only Texas pitchers to have three straight starts of at least eight scoreless innings. “He knows how to pitch,” Washington said. “He has weapons and he can throw them all for strikes and he has poise. He does a great job of staying with the game plan and thats something that hes learned from last year, how to study, how to go out there and just execute his pitches.” Donnie Murphy homered and Michael Choice scored one run and drove in another for the Rangers, who moved a half-game ahead of Oakland in the AL West with their first sweep of the As since August 2011. The As never even threatened Perez on their way to getting swept at home for the first time since September 2012 against the Angels, ending a streak of 32 straight home series with at least one win. “Youre going to have your little lumps in the road,” As third baseman Josh Donaldson said. “Everybody knows that here. We just have to come back.” Oakland got leadoff singles from Jed Lowrie in the fourth and Derek Norris in the fifth for its first two hits off Perez. But Perez followed each of those hits by getting the next batter to hit into a double play, giving him a major league-leading 11 groundball double plays. Donaldson doubled with one out in the seventh, but was stranded there when Alberto Callaspo grounded out with runners on first and second to end the inning. “He keeps the ball off the barrel of the bat,” As manager Bob Melvin said. “Hes pitched really well this year. The reason he can get deep in games is hes not striking a lot of guys out, hes just keeping it off the barrel of the bat.” Gray allowed three runs and five hits in seven innings to end a six-game winning streak in the regular season dating to last September. He fell behind when Choice led the game off with a walk and scored on Alex Rios triple. The Rangers were poised for a possible big inning when Rios was originally ruled safe at home on a grounder Lowrie at shortstop. But Melvin challenged the call and Rios was ruled out on instant replay. Choice, traded from Oakland to Texas in the off-season, added an RBI single in the fifth and Murphy hit his first homer of the season in the sixth to make it 3-0. NOTES: Rangers 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff was held out with a sore back. … Scott Kazmir (2-0) will take the mound against Brett Oberholtzer (0-3) on Thursday when Oakland opens a four-game series in Houston. … Texas is off Thursday before beginning a three-game series in Seattle on Friday. NASHVILLE - The Arizona Cardinals keep pushing for a playoff spot, even if they barely pulled out their latest win. Jay Feely kicked a 41-yard field goal in overtime, and the Cardinals edged the Tennessee Titans 37-34 in overtime after blowing a 17-point lead late in the fourth quarter. Still, the Cardinals (9-5) won their sixth in seven games. With San Francisco and Carolina winning, they remain a game back of both for a NFC wild-card berth. The Titans scored 17 points in the final 3:12 of regulation to force overtime with Ryan Fitzpatrick throwing two of his four TD passes to Michael Preston. They also recovered an onside kick to set up the tying TD with 10 seconds left in regulation. They won the toss and drove to the Cardinals 43 before Antoine Cason intercepted his second pass of the game. Tennessee (5-9) lost its third straight and eighth in 10 games. The Titans also lost their fifth consecutive home game for the first time since moving to Tennessee in 1997. The Cardinals scored 21 straight points in the second half, the last when Cason returned his first interception for a TD and a 34-17 lead. The Titans outgained Arizona 460-360 with Fitzpatrick throwing for 402 yards and Kendall Wright caught 12 passes for 150 yards hours after new president Tommy Smith said he felt they hadnt given up on Mike Munchak with the coachs job security at question. But Arizona sacked Fitzpatrick three times to go along with Casons interceptions. Rashard Mendenhall also ran for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns, and Carson Palmer threw for 231 yards and had a 6-yard TD pass to Jake Ballard. Cason also recovered a botched kickoff when Arizona surprised the Titans with a short kick to open the third quarter, and the Cardinals turned that into a 47-yard field goal by Feely. The Cardinals turned those mistakes into 13 points in a game with five lead changes. Arizona also made mistakes. The Cardinals didnt have a single penalty in the first half, but had four giving the Titans first downs on a 16-play drive by Tennessee for a TD and a 17-13 lead in the third quarter. Tennessee had won only once before this season when trailing going into the fourth quarter, losing seven other games. The Titans at least pushed this game to overtime with only a few thousand fans still left in the stadium because so many left when they fell behind 34-17. Munchak deactivated receivers Justin Hunter and Damian Williams for what team officials called violating team rules. The rookie Hunter was coming off the best game of his career and had topped 100 yards in two of the past three games. That forced the Titans to play Kenny Britt, and the veteran caught his first pass since Oct. 20. He finished with three catches. Bernardez jumped on a loose clearance off a last-ditch cross from Shaun Francis. Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando went up against Earthquakes forward Alan Gordon to try and punch it clear, but the ball barely made it out of the visitors 6-yard box, allowing Bernardez to hammer it home. The final whistle sounded just after the ensuing kickoff. The draw extended San Joses unbeaten streak at Buck Shaw Stadium to 21 games in all competitions. The Earthquakes used another 95th-minute goal, this one from Gordon, to force a 1-1 tie with top-seeded Mexican side Toluca in the first leg of the teams CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal Tuesday. Chris Wondolowski also tallied for the Earthquakes, who had lost their regular-season opener to RSL in three of the previous four seasons. Joao Plata scored his second goal in as many games for RSL, which was bidding for a second straight win to start the season under new coach Jefff Cassar.dddddddddddd Kyle Beckerman and MLS rookie Luke Mulholland also scored first-half goals against San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch. Wondolowski scored in the sixth minute from point-blank range, using his right thigh to redirect Bernardezs flick header of a long free kick by Shea Salinas. Beckerman equalized for Real Salt Lake just five minutes later. Plata laid off a ball into space for Beckerman to strike with his left foot from 27 yards. The shot ricocheted in off the right post. Plata initiated and finished RSLs second goal-scoring sequence in the 32nd minute, beating two defenders from the left wing, trading give-and-go passes with Luis Gil and deking Earthquakes centre back Jason Hernandez before pulling a 12-yard strike just inside the near post. Mulholland put RSL up 3-1 in first-half injury time, racing past a scrambled San Jose defence to pick up the rebound of Ned Grabavoys shot and slot it home from 8 yards. Bernardez gave San Jose life in the 75th minute, connecting with a Salinas corner on a near-post run and skimming his header to the open back post. ’ ’ ’

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays came close but in the end they could not overcome the four home runs allowed by R.A. Dickey. Their ninth-inning rally netted only two runs and the American League East leaders lost 5-4 to the Chicago White Sox on Friday. Dickey (6-7) allowed only one other hit besides the home runs and also struck out a season-best nine. “Its a terrible letdown,” Dickey said. “One less home run we win that game. Its just a really bizarre outing to be able to strike out nine guys, get all those swings and misses on what I felt like was a really, really good knuckleball tonight.” Rookie first baseman Jose Abreu hit two solo homers against Dickey and Dayan Viciedo added a solo shot with Alexei Ramirez hitting a two-run blast that proved to be the difference. The Blue Jays had three home runs. Edwin Encarnacion and Dioner Navarro hit back-to-back solos in the sixth as the Blue Jays 45-37) tied the game 2-2, and Colby Rasmus, leading off the ninth as a pinch hitter, hit his 11th of the season. Left-hander John Danks (7-6) allowed five hits, including two home runs, and two runs over six innings, to earn the victory. The White Sox (37-44) regained the lead in the seventh as Abreu led off with his 25th homer of the season. Ramirez followed with his eighth, a two-run drive after a walk to designated hitter Adam Dunn. “Its a baffling pitch,” Dickey said of his knuckleball. “The pitch that Abreu hit out, I threw it the same way that I threw the one that they swung and missed at. Its just part of what you have to accept with the pitch. And then hopefully you look back at the end of the year and youve kept us in games. But tonight was a tough one because we should have won that game.” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said Dickeys knuckleball looked good all night. “Guys were coming back saying he was throwing a good one,” Ventura said. “Guys like that, you never know. Sometimes you go up there and you might not have a chance and you hope he throws a flat one. Thats why you never know. You go up there and you could get the good one or you could get the flat one.” The four homers allowed by Dickey were his most in a game since 2006 when he allowed six. But the Blue Jays still had a chance. White Sox right-hander Ronald Belisario, who was trying for his ninth save, got only one out in the ninth. After the leadoff homer to Rasmus, he gave up one-out singles to Munenori Kawasaki and Anthony Gose. Left-hander Eric Surkamp came in to face pinch-hitter Adam Lind, whose grounder resulted in an error by third baseman Conor Gillaspie. Right-hander Jake Petricka came in and Jose Reyes forced pinch runner Drew Hutchison out with a grounder to short as another run scored. Melky Cabrera ended the game with a grounder to second and Petricka picked up his second save of the season. “Hey, we had a shot,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "It would have been a nice little win, it was right there. It was one of those kinds of nights. I thought Dickey was great early on. He gave up two homers, we came back and tied it, they went back out and scored three. “We made a run late, thats all you ask for.” Prior to the fifth inning, Dickey had allowed only one base runner, on a second-inning error by Reyes. But Abreu led off the fifth with his 24th homer of the season and Viciedo hit his seventh two outs later. “Its not a surprise,” Ventura said. “(Abreu) is a good hitter, but I think you also see the power thats there. When he gets it on the barrel, it just seems to continue to go. Its like helium balls, they just continue to float.” The Blue Jays tied the game by hitting back-to-back homers for the sixth time this season with two out in the sixth when Encarnacion hit his 25th and Navarro his fifth. There was a four-minute delay during the top of the second while Ventura talked to the umpires about some blinking lights on the facade just below the centre-field scoreboard that started flashing after fire alarm bells were heard. The game continued and the lights stopped blinking three batters into the bottom of the second. “It was more of an annoyance,” Ventura said. “You first sit there and notice it and then youre hitting. I didnt know if they could actually just turn it off but I guess it took a while because its the hotel and theres protocol with the fire department that Im not in control of, so I couldnt get it turned off.” With the lights still blinking in the bottom of the second, Torontos Steve Tolleson snapped a career-high 0-for-16 drought with a one-out double to left. A possible rally was thwarted after Kawasaki singled to right but made a big turn around first base. Kawasaki was caught in a rundown between first and second, while Tolleson, who inched too far down the third-base line, was thrown out by Ramirez. If you ask Jones what he looks for in a player, his response is "aggressiveness with intelligence that play with a ‘liitle edge.” That is a good definition of desire but could also be a description of Jones himself. Being aggressive is always a priority for a player; there are not many situations where being passive is beneficial on the football field. Pro football is not a nice game. In many ways and at the majority of positions youre imposing your will on another player, another athlete, and quite often the player with the strongest will and desire wins that battle. Sometimes you qualify it as mental toughness, but an aggressive mind set wins in this sport as long as it is disciplined and under control. Speaking of mind set, it may surprise you but intelligence is as important as any aspect of performance there is. The best linebacker in CFL football just may be J.C. Sherritt, the Eskimos middle linebacker. By no means is he physically imposing or dominant but when it comes to football smarts there are few that are his superiors. Interesting this year in that the injury adversity Sherritt faced last year gave an opportunity for another linebacker to shine in rookie Rennie Curran. This year both could be playing side by side in Edmonton, a strength for the Eskimos as both are athletic and very bright; they do not make the same mistake twice. The third quality of a Chris Jones player is one that plays with a little edge. Note those three words, “a little edge,” are not easy to define or visualize. Is it a player who is exceptionally aggressive or intelligent? Or perhaps it is an attitude or enthusiasm. I think it is a guy who has no fearr, cant be intimidated and, either subtly or overtly, does the intimidating.dddddddddddd I dont know if you can describe it in words, but I do know coaches, especially veterans, recognize and want it. So the Chris Jones era begins and the Mike Reilly era, still in its infancy, continues. What was interesting to watch last year was how the Eskimos fans embraced Reilly as their quarterback. Not for the beautiful touchdown passes from the perfect spiral, or the ultimate three-minute drill to lead his team to poetic victory; they embraced Reilly because of the courage he played with in each and every game. Reilly was pummeled last year for many reasons, sometime poor pass protection, sometimes too many predictable passing situations. Add in a poor running game Reillys penchant for taking too many risks, hes gambling with his longevity. But what I observed is the Edmonton football faithful recognize his courageous performances and genuinely respected and responded positively to it. In a time when maximum revenue is a key priority for many, Reilly demonstrated an opposite mentality of thought; risking all for the cause in many situations. Now he has to temper it down however and he will or hell still be a football hero in Edmonton, just not for 18 games. The West is pretty good this year. Winnipeg will be better, Calgary and BC have good personnel that just need to stay healthy and focused, and Saskatchewan is the defending Grey Cup champion. So where does that leave Edmonton? They will be aggressive, they will be intelligent, and they will play with an edge. They will pressure the quarterback relentlessly and take risks one-on-one in coverage. And of course, their quarterback will continue to play with the definable quality of courage each and every game. Edmonton may just be pretty good this year. ’ ’ ’

CLEVELAND – With just over a minute remaining in a three-point contest, Kyrie Irving, Clevelands lethal late-game weapon, barrelled into the lane as Kyle Lowry stood in his way, positioned above the restricted area. Mired in an offensive slump, Lowry – the NBAs leader in taking charges this season – did what he has learned to do best, standing his ground and drawing a crucial offensive foul on the Cavaliers all-star point guard. Fast forward 30 seconds to the Cavs next possession, with the home team still trailing by three, Spencer Hawes – one of the leagues best passing big men – threw an interception, intended for Tyler Zeller and picked off by DeMar DeRozan. The Raptors two best players, their two leading scorers, made the two most important plays of Tuesdays 99-93 win over Cleveland. That much is not unusual. Of note though is both of those plays came on the defensive end. “Those defensive plays are deflation plays for the opposition,” said Lowry, who struggled with his shot, hitting just three of 15 attempts from the field and misfiring on all nine of his jumpers from three-point range. “Its definitely fun to step up for the team in those situations.” Lowry didnt think twice when faced with a split-second decision, one hes made time and time again in high-pressure situations during his breakout campaign. “Those are winning plays,” he said, asked about the art of drawing a charge, crediting the tutelage of former teammate Shane Battier, whom he called “one of the best charge takers” in the league. DeRozans steal was just as vital, if not more so, to the teams sixth win in the last seven games and second over Cleveland in a span of five days. “He was like a free safety out there,” Lowry said, shortly before DeRozan – in conversation with the media – made yet another reference to Seahawks cornerback and fellow Compton-native Richard Sherman. “I kind of anticipated it, I read the play a little bit,” said DeRozan, who also made his share of big offensive plays, scoring 16 of his game-high 33 points in the fourth quarter, adding six assists without turning the ball over. “They ran it earlier in the game. I knew they were going to look for it and I just went for it.” Toronto, and DeRozan in particular, has come up short when faced with one final possession, one final shot in the past. Both guards heeded their coachs direction this time around. It didnt come down to a last-second heave. The Raptors won with timely defence. After enjoying a much-improved first quarter following a series of slow starts, the Raptors struggled on both ends of the floor during the meat of the game. Nothing was falling for Lowry – a 39 per cent three-point shooter on the season – and the team was accumulating sloppy turnovers at an uncharacteristically alarming rate for the second straight contest. Almost foreshadowing the nights eventual result, Casey was asked how to prevent his team from allowing its offence to dictate defensive effort prior to the game. “I havent discovered it yet in my 30 years of coaching,” he responded. “Its the same in college, [in the] pros and its been that way for a long time. A lot of guys have to see the ball go through the basket to get themselves going on the other end, which you dont want, you preach against but I think its human nature.” For at least one night, his team and his point guard bucked that trend. “That was one example of a guy not letting his offence dictate his defence,” Casey said of Lowry, who also added nine assists, made all seven of his free-throw attempts and could have drawn a couple more charges if not for a pair of close calls that didnt go his way. “Thats how you have to play,” Lowry added. “Youre not going to have great games all the time. Youre not going to shoot 10-for-12 every night or 20-for-30. Youre always going to have some sort of off game but you cant let that stop you from helping your team win a game.” Terrence Ross bailed him out offensively, scoring what DeRozan called a “quiet 19 points”, knocking down five of his eight shots from long distance. With the win, the Raptors climb seven games above the .500 mark for the first time in six years. It ensures theyll have a winning record for a third consecutive month, accomplishing that feat for the first time since 2007. VANCOUVER — Coach Martin Rennies season-long struggle to field two dangerous strikers in the same game will continue tonight as his Vancouver Whitecaps fight to keep their Major League Soccer playoff hopes alive in Seattle. You can watch the game on TSN2 at 10pm et/7pm pt. Rennie faces another major test to find a suitable strike mate for Camilo, the current Major League Soccer player of the week, as the Whitecaps (11-11-9) seek a win against a Sounders squad (15-9-6) that has lost only one game at home and routinely attracts crowds of over 45,000. The Whitecaps sit six points out of the fifth and final post-season berth in the Western Conference with only three games left and a possible nine points up for grabs. As usual, injuries and international call-ups are making Rennies second striker choice difficult. Darren Mattocks would have been the ideal selection to complement Camilo after they excelled together in a 2-2 draw Sunday with the Portland Timbers. But Mattocks, who has been in and out of the lineup all season due to injuries, inconsistency and international duty, has left the club to join Jamaicas national team in preparation for a World Cup qualifying match Friday against the U.S. “Thats one of the things thats been frustrating a little bit this season,” said Rennie. “Any time you get him kind of in and around the team, he seems to be gone again. Thats something that has hurt him a little bit this season. Its hurt us as well, because on Sunday there we found out just how good a player he is.” Rennie would have liked Mattocks to build on the effort against Portland. Kenny Miller would also be an ideal fit, because he and Camilo have combined for 27 of Vancouvers 44 goals, posting many while playing alongside each other. But Miller, who has eight goals, is questionable after missing the past two games with a groin injury. Millers anticipated absence poses concern because the Whitecaps have won more games with him in the lineup than when he was out due to injury or while playing for Scotlands national team, from which he has since retired. Striker Tommy Heinemann is available but the St. Louis native, who is strong in the air but not fleet afoot, did not work overly well with Camilo in a 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake on Sept. 28. Consequently, 18-year-old rookie Kekuta Manneh, will likely be counted on to play a significant role either in a rare start or his usual substitute function. “It means a lot,” said Manneh, a Gambia native, of his chance to play in the big game. “I feel like every rookie, that will be their dream to come to the team and be a part of the team. Hopefully I can bring something to the team and we can win.” Manneh possesses world-class speed and skill, but Rennie has limited the rookies playing time — usually dressing him in the 18-player lineup while infrequently putting him into games — as he takes a cautious approach to his professional development. “We know hes got so much talent,” said Rennie. “Were just not 100 per cent sure what were going to get (each game). But we do know if its good, then it could be great. Thats something we have to consider once we know how (Miller) is.” Manneh has two goals and two assists while logging 529 minutes over 17 games. He often lines up as a midfielder and pushes forward, creating many scoring opportunities. He feels much more prepared for a contest of this magnitude than he was at the start of the season. “Ive come a long way,” he said of his improvement. But it remains to be seen how much he can help a struggling Vancouver side that has gone 2-6-4 in its past 12 games. The Whitecaps will likely depend even more on Camilo, who scored both of their goals against Portland. He booted one goal on a long free kick and the other on a sideways bicycle blast. “Camilo has done that for us all season,” said captain Jay DeMerit. “That hopefully has to continue now in the final games because we need him.” Notes: Whitecaps central defender Johnny Leveron will also be away on international duty for World Cup qualifying with Honduras. a The Whitecaps will be eliminated if they lose once and Los Angeles or Colorado posts a single win in their remaining games. Vancouver closes out its season with two games against Colorado. a Clint Dempsey, the highest paid player in MLS at US$5 million this season, will dress for the Sounders after being sidelined since Sept. 13 with a hamstring injury. Fellow striker Obafemi Martins is also slated to suit up after missing their last game in Colorado with a groin injury. a Seattles Eddie Johnson and Brad Evans will be away with the U.S. team, while Zach Scott serves a one-game suspension for a red card. EDMONTON - The Edmonton Oilers returned to the ice Wednesday after 12 days off for the Olympic break, several of them with red faces either from sun tanning or the hard bike riding that was part of the mini training camp/conditioning session they were put through. “It feels a lot shorter than it was,” said veteran defenceman Andrew Ference, who spent part of the break with his family in Canmore, Alta., visiting former Olympians Thomas Grandi and Sara Renner. “But its a really good chance to get rid of all the little aches and pains.” Ference said it has to be remembered that with back-to-back condensed seasons – last year because of the lockout – players need the break both mentally and physically. “The last calendar year I think I played 110 or 120 games, so its a much welcomed break.” It was a break that came with the Oilers suddenly having found their game in the midst of another disastrous, non-playoff season. They went into the Olympic break having won five of their previous seven games – one of the losses was in overtime – and outscoring their opponents 18-12. Their previous 10 games before the break – the statistic the NHL keeps – showed them at 5-3-2, a record that put them in the middle of the pack, unlike the 29th place they are in with their overall record of 20-33-7. “It is tough from that aspect,” forward Jordan Eberle said of the untimely break. "Some of the GMs around the league have been complaining, some of the teams were going well and then you get this break. Its almost like a new season starting. “But, for me personally, I feel you get re-energized, with a little more jump and a little more excitement to play, like you did in camp. I feel really energized and ready to play.” Like many of the players, Eberle took a vacation away from the game, away from Edmonton and away from winter. But not away from working out. “Yeah I went away but I definitely worked out,” he added. “I knew today was going to be a tough day. It was just a bit of a skate but most of the stuff was in the gym and it was tough.” Ference said the players were put through a tough physical that included a hard bike ride but said everybody looked fine. “Nobody was puking.” Veteran Ryan Smyth said it would have been nice to be playing in the Olympics again, but he appreciated the great family time he had in Mexico. And as a player turning 38 on Friday, he said “any time you get some rest for the body to recuperate, it will really help.” While players made sure they stayed physically active and in shape, they were able to mentally turn off the game and enjoy some rare family time. “Your mind is a little off on vacation so you give yourself a break there,” said Eberle, second on the Oilers scoring with 45 points. "But as far as your body you have to make sure youre still able to come back and play 22 games. So everyone took their mind away from the game, which is a good thing. “I went on vacation somewhere hot and your mind is so out of it that you think, wow, I have to come back and play hockey? But as soon as you get to Edmonton, see the snow on the ground, it changes pretty quickly. I got on the ice, felt pretty excited to get back. Its almost like a new season here.” The Oilers resume play Feb. 27 at home against the Minnesota Wild. 20:11ET 19-02-14 [url=http://www.shopjerseystexans.com/authentic-j-j. MIAMIUFC fighter Thiago Silva is in jail after being accused of threatening his wife with a gun. Broward County jail records show that Silva, 31, was being held without bond following his arrest Thursday on charges that included attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and obstruction without violence. But his attorney, Scott Saul, told The Associated Press that the charges were downgraded during a Friday court appearance to aggravated assault with a firearm and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Saul said he entered a not guilty plea on Silvas behalf. Authorities said Silva took a gun to a mixed martial arts academy in Oakland Park and threatened to shoot his estranged wife, Thaysa, and her now-boyfriend, who called police and Silva drove away. Authorities tracked him down to his home where he was holed up for hours until he surrendered. Authorities used a stun gun on him before he was taken into custody. Ultimate Fighting Championship said on its website that it has terminated the Silvas contract, effective immediately. A message left with UFC was not immediately returned Saturday. Broward Circuit Judge John Hurley noted during the court appearance that there was no probable cause to support the attempted murder charges but ordered Silva held without bond after expressing concern about the nature of the allegations and said Silva, a Brazilian mixed martial artist, posed a flight risk. “Hes upset because hes been humiliated and hes in jail,” Saul said of Silva. “Hes been very unfairly treated as some type of aggressive animal just because hes a professional athlete. There are no marks on this womans body. Hes not accused of ever hitting her. When Im dealing with him, Im dealing with the perfect gentleman.” But a probable cause affidavit shows Silva had threatened his estranged wife on several occasions. Thaysa Silva told deputies on Jan. 30 that she and her husband had been arguing over an extra marital affair when Thiago pointed a gun at her and said he was going to kill her, the report stated. He then placed the gun in her mouth. The same day, Thaysa Silva obtained a temporary injunction of protection against him. On Wednesday, police say he sent her a text message in Portuguese that said “…you are going to die. I am going to hire someone to kill you.” The next day Thiago Silva “had been drinking and extremely intoxicated” when he drove to the gym and threatened to kill his wife and her now-boyfriend who owns the gym, the report said. “I will go in the gym and start shooting everyone,” Silva said. There were 25 people in the gym at the time, the report noted. The boyfriend went outside and Thiago threatened to kill him and his wife, the report said. The boyfriend eventually called police and Silva drove off. He was later arrested at his home and appeared to be intoxicated and “uttered that he did not know what was going on,” the report said. The report said Silva and his wife had been married for 13 years, but Saul said the two were separated. Silva (16-3 with two no contests) has had a checkered history in mixed martial arts. In November 2012, he tested positive for marijuana following a win over Stanislav Nedkov in Macau. The fight was declared a no contest and Silva was banned for six months. He agreed to participate in an approved drug-rehabilitation program. The former light-heavyweight contender admitted to doping and tampering with his urine at a UFC 125 drug test. He said he did it because he injured his back in advance of the January 2011 fight against Brandon (The Truth) Vera. Silva won the fight, which was turned into a no contest after the failed drug test The Nevada State Athletic Commission had alleged he submitted a specimen that was “inconsistent with human urine” before the bout. Silva was banned for a year and fined US$33,750. .

TORONTO – When Rudy Gay was traded just over a week ago, he left the Raptors with 18.6 shots and 35 minutes to be redistributed nightly. He also left them with a vacancy in their starting lineup. So far, sophomore Terrence Ross has been the primary beneficiary. “It [is] probably the biggest opportunity of my career,” the Raptors second-year guard said of his new role in the teams starting five. “Just taking advantage of it [and] making sure I capitalize on things is big for me.” Ross promotion is one that came together organically in the aftermath of the Gay trade. He had been clamouring for more playing time, according to Casey, but Ross insists he never formally asked the coach to start. “I kind of just knew when Rudy left it was kind of like, okay we only have me and Landry [Fields] so one of us is going to start,” he recounted after Monday mornings practice. “So either way, [I was] going to get big minutes. I just knew it was an opportunity for me to go out there and show what I can do.” On the eve of the trade, Casey opted to start the more experienced Fields at the three-spot. Fields played 31 scoreless minutes in Los Angeles that night and has logged less than 20 minutes in three games since. Ross, the next man on the Raptors depth chart, got the call after that. Playing 38 minutes – the most of his career – in his first start of the season Tuesday, Ross earned mixed reviews. He was inconsistent, the ongoing theme of his 95-game NBA career, and as a result, Casey was hesitant to commit to him as the teams starter going forward. “Well see,” the Raptors coach replied, asked about Ross future with the first unit at that time. Three days later, Ross earned a second start despite a pre-game slip up in which Casey suggested he might be a better long-term fit playing with Greivis Vasquez in the second unit. Whatever the message was, it was received. Ross responded with 24 points – two off his career high – on 10-of-16 shooting on Friday. His promotion was not intended to be permanent, it still may not be, but Ross doesnt plan on giving it up without a fight. “I know Id do anything and everything to keep my position I have right now,” the 22-year-old promised. “Its not all about scoring, its about just really doing whatever [Casey] asks and playing hard on defence, making the right passes and not having any mental lapses.” “Hes got to keep it going,” Casey emphasized after Ross breakout performance against the 76ers. “Hes got to continue it, thats his biggest challenge as a young player in this league, is to stay hungry, stay driven, stay consistent. Consistency is what hes fighting for, hes a talented young man but hes fighting consistency.” Saturdays surprising win in Chicago, his third straight start, was another step in the right direction. Struggling with his shot, Ross went 4-for-12 from the field including 1-of-9 in the first half but found other ways to make positive contributions while on the floor. He grabbed six rebounds, recorded a career-best four assists and earned praise from his coach for his work on the defensive end. The hope for Casey and the Raptors is that Ross is beginning to develop into a more consistent and versatile player. Too often in the past, he has been rendered unusable, a liability on the court when his jump-shot wasnt falling or opposing defences would take him out of his comfort zone as a slasher. He has the tools required to be more than a one-dimensional player, now its about putting them all together. “Ive always been well aware of his athletic ability but I wasnt aware of his shooting ability,” said new teammate Patrick Patterson. “Im definitely glad hes taking this starting role to the next level. Hes not satisfied with just starting, he wants to be a great basketball player and Im definitely happy for him.” In DeMar DeRozan, Ross has a willing mentor, a player who has successfully overcome similar limitations. DeRozan – not unlike Ross, who is only a couple years younger – was once, in the not-so-distant past, considered to be one-dimensional. In his fifth season, DeRozan is blossoming into a complete player, averaging career highs in points, assists and three-point shooting, also growing on the defensive end. “Both of them are similar,” Casey said of his two young wing players. “Similar body types, similar games, fighting to find consistency. DeMar went through the same things his first couple of years in the league. Two guys in similar positions, same skill set being around each other can only benefit.” The similarities go beyond the court. Overwhelmed as a rookie, Ross, quiet and reserved by nature, is starting to open up and get more comfortable in his NBA skin. DeRozan went through the exact same evolution as a young man. Now, the 24-year-old has grown into a leader and has taken Ross under his wing. “Through training camp, every time we practice, he guards me, he goes against me and I dont let up on him,” DeRozan said of Ross, sounding like a grizzled veteran. “I try to go at him as much as I can so he can take on the challenge every night when he goes out and plays against another player, it wont be as hard.” “I love to see his growth and Im happy for him. One thing I try to do is keep his confidence high.” “DeMar [has been] going hard at me ever since I got here so I dont even notice it anymore,” said the student of his mentor. “But it helps because hes one of the top wings in the league now.” Whether he remains a starter or ends up returning to the bench, Ross has been set free. Regardless of which path the bewildered Raptors take and how they choose to get there, their former eighth overall pick figures to be a vital part of the ride. This opportunity and what he is able to do with it will be his most telling challenge to date. “You just have to be more focused, you just have to be dialled in,” said the Raptors newest starter. “Its tough but its fun at the same time and as long as youre having fun with it, it comes easier.” . – Wednesdays lightweight bout between Canadian Sam (Hands of Stone) Stout and K. Roy Hibbert scored 22 points and Lance Stephenson fell just short of his fourth triple double this season, helping the Pacers hold off Torontos late charge for an 86-79 victory that allowed them to keep the NBAs best record.MINNEAPOLIS — After three straight 100-loss seasons, the Houston Astros lineup is suddenly filled with sluggers who can change a game with one swing. Chris Carter and Jon Singleton hit their first career grand slams to power Houston to a 14-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. Carters slam in the seventh inning sailed over the limestone overhang in right field and gave Houston a 9-3 lead. Singleton lined a fastball off Glen Perkins over the right-field wall that made it 14-5 in the ninth. Dexter Fowler and George Springer also homered for the Astros. Houston has now hit 69 homers this season, well on pace to surpass last seasons total of 148, third-worst in the American League. “It puts more strain on the opposing pitchers,” Astros manager Bo Porter said. “They feel like, I cant make a mistake here, I cant make a mistake here. That can drain on a staff.” The only other time two Astros players hit grand slams in the same game was July 30, 1969, at New York when Denis Menke and Jimmy Wynn both hit slams in an 11-run ninth inning against the Mets. Houston players are also sensing a different vibe now that the lineup is filled with more power. “Its been fun. We like playing off of each other,” Singleton said. “Thats definitely a bonus. When one person does well, it carries over and its contagious.” Darin Downs (1-0) got the last eight outs as the third reliever to follow starter Colin McHugh, who fanned six and allowed one run over 4 1/3 innings. He walked five and was removed after throwing 101 pitches. Trevor Plouffe and Josh Willingham hit RBI singles as Minnesota made it 5-3 in the fifth, but couldnt get any closer before Carter and Singleton powered the game away. Houston batted around in the fourth inning, scoring three runs after Samuel Deduno (2-4) loaded the bases with nobody out by walking two batters and hitting another. The Astros have won seven of eight on the road and 11 of their last 15 overall as they try to snap a three-year streak of losing 100 games. It was the third time in club history Minnesota allowed two grand slams in the same game. The last time it happened was April 22, 1988, in Cleveland. “They got us today,” Perkins said. “I think they swing hard in case they hit it, and they hit them today.dddddddddddd Theyre not as bad as people think they are. Gotta give credit to them the way they swing the bat and pitch the ball pretty well.” The Twins also officially signed free-agent designated hitter/first-baseman Kendrys Morales on Sunday to bolster their inconsistent offence. But if Minnesota — now three games under .500 — wants to remain in the playoff race, its going to need better starting pitching. Deduno walked four and hit two while allowing five runs in three innings on Sunday, raising his ERA to 4.45. As a group, Minnesotas starters are 19-25 with a 4.97 ERA. “Not a good day pitching today. Used a lot of innings out there,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. “We still have three games to go (before the next off day), so well get through it. Thats the way it is. They killed it at the end.” McHugh struck out four batters in a row during one stretch and extended his scoreless innings streak to a career-high 16 2/3 before Eduardo Nunez homered in the fourth. Springer, named American League rookie of the month after hitting 10 home runs in May, led off the eighth by hitting his second homer in three games. “Its nice to have other guys in the lineup who do the same thing and have more protection where guys cant just pitch around me or pitch around another guy,” said Carter, who led Houston with 29 homers last season. “Theres another guy behind him always. Its good for all of us.” NOTES: To make room on the roster for Morales, Minnesota released Jason Kubel, who appeared in 798 games over parts of eight seasons with the Twins, but was hitting .224 this year and just .158 since April. … The Astros recalled LHP Rudy Owens to pitch out of the bullpen and sent Paul Clemens back to Triple-A Oklahoma City for the sixth time this season. … The Twins unveiled a new bronze statue on the Target Plaza before the game: team mascot T.C. Bear. … Jonathan Villar singled three times for Houston. … Ricky Nolasco (4-5, 5.65 ERA) starts for the Twins against Torontos R.A. Dickey (6-4, 4.25 ERA) on Monday. … Houstons Jarred Cosart (4-5, 4.16 ERA) faces Josh Collmenter (4-2, 3.63 ERA) to kick off a two-game series in Arizona on Monday. ’ ’ ’

The Swiss star lost just three points on his serve to his 6-foot-11 (2.11-meter) opponent, and in a match with few rallies, he committed only three unforced errors. Three-time champion Novak Djokovic followed Federer onto the stadium court and into the third round, defeating Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 6-3. Defending champion Andy Murray, playing for the first time since he parted with coach Ivan Lendl, rallied to beat Matthew Ebden 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. Another three-time champ, Venus Williams, defeated Anna Schmiedlova 6-3, 6-3. Williams, the oldest player remaining in the womens draw at 33, is competing at Key Biscayne for the 15th time. “Its good to be here still as an oldster,” Williams said. At 32, Federer has looked rejuvenated recently, and was the runner-up to Djokovic last week at Indian Wells. The 17-time Grand Slam champion says his new racket gives him more power, and hes moving as he did in the old days. After falling out of the top five last year for the first time since 2002, Federer returned to No. 5 this week. He led from the start against Karlovic, making the surprising choice to receive after winning the toss and earning the lone break of the match in the opening game. “I just felt like, you know, let him go first and see how it goes,” Federer said. “It worked well today because I got the early break right away. That relaxed me for the rest of the first set clearly, but still he hung around.” While Federer had trouble with serves from Karlovic that peaked at 138 mph (222 kph), the Croat had no cchance when returning.dddddddddddd Federer won 49 of his 52 service points. Federer improved to 11-1 in their head-to-head — or, in this case, head-to-shoulder. He said playing Karlovic presents unique challenges that he enjoys. “Physically its super easy. There are no long rallies,” Federer said. “Its just more like a penalty shootout in soccer.” The longest point was the last one, and when Karlovic pushed a backhand into the net on the 10th stroke, Federer hopped happily in celebration and threw a fist. The show of exuberance might be a hint hes keen to do well in a tournament he hasnt won since 2006. “Im very relieved and happy to be through,” he said. Djokovic converted all three of his break-point chances against Chardy, who was hobbled after hurting his right ankle in the penultimate game. “When I was supposed to play my best and come up with some good serves and good shots, thats what I did in both sets,” Djokovic said. On the womens side, No. 2-seeded Li Na reached the third round when Alisa Kleybanova withdrew because of a viral illness. Kleybanova, who won in doubles Thursday, is a former top 20-player mounting a career comeback from Hodgkins lymphoma. No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska, the tournament champion in 2012, defeated Romina Oprandi 6-0, 6-4. The Pole was hampered by a knee injury in her loss to Flavia Pennetta in the final at Indian Wells on Sunday, but showed no ill effects in her match Friday. “I feel much better now, obviously,” she said. “Its not perfect yet, but I think those few days I had of rest in between Indian Wells and Miami really helped me.” No. 6 Simona Halep, who lost to Radwanska in the semifinals at Indian Wells, withdrew because of a right toe injury. Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki advanced with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 win over Monica Puig, but No. 7-seeded Jelena Jankovic was upset by American Varvara Lepchenko. ’ ’ ’

SAN DIEGO — Tweeeeeeet! Gonzaga and Oklahoma State players, coaches and fans no doubt left Viejas Arena with the shrill sound of the referees whistles ringing in their ears Friday. The refs called 61 fouls, which affected the pace and outcome of eighth-seeded Gonzagas 85-77 win against Marcus Smart and ninth-seeded Oklahoma State in the West region of the NCAA tournament. Kevin Pangos scored 26 points, including hitting 12 of 14 free throws, and Gary Bell Jr. added 17 for Gonzaga (29-6), which is in its 16th straight NCAA tournament and moves on to play top-seeded Arizona on Sunday. Pangos made 10 of 10 free throws in the last 1:31. The final 3 1/2 minutes took 24 minutes to play. The 61 fouls were seven off the record for fouls in a tournament game set by Iowa and Morehead State in a regional semifinal game in 1956. The Cowboys were called for 33 fouls, with LeBryan Nash, Kamari Murphy and Leyton Hammonds fouling out. The Zags made 26 of 41 free throws. The Zags were whistled 28 times, with Sam Dower Jr. and Kyle Dranginis fouling out. The Cowboys made only 22 of 37 from the stripe. “Especially at the end, it got a bit choppy,” Pangos said. “But it was smart on their part. It prolonged the game, with empty possessions and a weird rhythm. But our team did a great job of pulling through and getting it done no matter how the tempo went.” Smart had a big effort in his final college game, with 23 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and six steals for Oklahoma State (21-13). He was 12 of 19 from the line. All the fouling “changed it a bit,” Smart said. “I mean, you know, I cant remember the foul count, how many free throws both teams shot, but it was a good amount. And it kind of slowed the game down, gave us a chance to get back in it, but we just fell short.” Smart is projected to be a high NBA draft pick. He passed up the NBA draft last year, in large part because the Cowboys lost to Oregon in their NCAA tournament opener. The Cowboys won five of seven games coming in, a run that coincided with Smarts returning from a three-game suspension for shoving a Texas Tech fan. Gonzaga big man Przemek Karnowski hurt the Cowboys inside, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Dranginis scored 12. Markel Brown scored 20 for Oklahoma State and Phil Forte had 12. “We knew it wasnt going to be pretty,” Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. “We knew we were going to have to fight and we talked about being the toughest team on the floor and you know, I think for stretches of it we were, because if you dont match OK States toughness, you dont have a chance.” Karnowski agreed. “We knew they are a good offensive team, especially their guards. WE just tried to make their life not easy on offence and just tried to go at them offensively, especially inside.” The Cowboys whittled a 10-point deficit down to three with 11:24 to go before Bell hit a 3-pointer for a 56-50 lead with 11:08 to go. Pangos had a steal and a layup, and Brown answered for the Cowboys. Karnowski hit the front end of a one-and-one and Pangos hit a 3-pointer for a 10-point lead with 7:46 left. “They answered every run we made with big plays,” Cowboys coach Travis Ford said. "We threw a few punches in the second half and we said to our guys, Lets get aggressive, lets get after it. “Obviously we got in foul trouble which hurt us, especially with LB (Nash) not being in there and playing only 17 minutes,” Ford added. “Thats not the greatest scenario for us.” Gonzaga led 43-34 at halftime, getting consecutive 3-pointers from Drew Barham and Kevin Pangos in the closing minutes. Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford was whistled for a technical foul with 11.1 seconds left. Pangos missed the first free throw and made the second. Ford had been on the refs ever since the Cowboys were whistled for six fouls and a travelling call in a span of 1:40 midway through the half. “Obviously I was trying to get them going at the end of the first half, trying to get us a little fired up,” Ford said. Gonzaga went on an 8-2 run to take a 33-24 lead, making five of six free throws and getting a 3-pointer from Dranginis. Oklahoma State then went on a 9-1 run to pull to 34-33. Smart had two free throws and a jumper. Gonzaga pulled away on an inside shot by Dower, the two 3-pointers and a free throw by Pangos on the technical. Bell made two 3-pointers in the first 50 seconds and hit two other shots to help Gonzaga take a 17-6 lead. Smart started and ended a 10-0 run that pulled the Cowboys within one point. He was fouled by Bell while making a 3-point shot and made the free throw. Murphy hit a jumper and Brown made two free throws before Smart had a tip-in. Kesler, 29, is nursing a hand injury and did nnot dress on Thursday night for Vancouvers post-Olympic opener against the St.dddddddddddd Louis Blues. Rumours in recent days have suggested that the Canucks have been listening to offers for Kesler and Alex Edler. Kesler has two more years remaining on a six-year, $30 million contract. He will be paid $5 million in each of the next two seasons and his high cap hit is expected to potentially make him difficult to move before the March 5 deadline. ’ ’ ’

TSNs Jack Armstrong offers his thoughts on Phil Jackson in New York, Ray McCallums impressive play with the Kings, the reliable veteran in Memphis Mike Miller, Andrew Bynums debut with the Pacers and Anthony Bennetts injury. 1. PHIL JACKSON: Would be a major coup of the NY Knicks to get him as their President. Bottom line, owner James Dolan needs to stay out of the way. Jackson must have the ability to select his GM, front office staff, coaches, support staff and have final say on all player issues. If he wants to move current employees out, then he has carte blanche to do that as well. Anything less will be more of the same dysfunction. He needs to be the boss and the one who sets the tone with the folks he wants in place. 2. RAY MCCALLUM (Kings): Have been impressed with him in the last few games Ive seen him. Great energy and feel for the game. Played for his dad at the University of Detroit and you can tell hes grown up around the game. Getting a chance to get some second unit minutes right now and hes been respectable. 3. MIKE MILLER (Grizzlies): Even though hes five points off his career average (down from 12 to 7 ppg) he is still a reliable veteran who really makes the defense defend him behind the arc, thus opening up more space for his teammates to operate. When you shoot the ball from distance at 45 per cent and youre a good passer youll have a role and be counted on considerably. When you think back not too long ago there were major concerns due to his back issues about whether hed have to retire before this year. Hes beating the odds and even though hes not quite the same player – hes still a solid one. 4. ANDREW BYNUM (Pacers): Makes his debut with his new team and has a nice night with 8 and 10. If youre a Pacers fan you ask, Where can I sign up for that every night? At his stage, he was brought in to make sure Miami didnt get him and to provide the force in the lane. Those numbers would be more than adequate at this point in the season and where hes at with his game. 5. ANTHONY BENNETT (Cavs): Out three weeks with a knee injury. When it rains, it pours. Please give me rain!! Sure beats all the snow were getting!! Was starting to come around a bit and now this. His conditioning was a major issue for him and within three weeks on the shelf this is a setback in that area. Hopefully, he learns from his last rehab stint and approached his health/fitness routine in a more focused fashion. . The Bobcats (2-2) trailed 35-23 early in the second quarter, but cut the lead to 42-40 at halftime. Charlotte outscored Cleveland 32-17 in the third quarter to go ahead 72-59 and pulled away. . Atletico built a provisional three-point advantage over Barcelona before the defending champion hosts Elche on Sunday. Barcelona then visits Atletico in the following round. “We will have to wait and see if Barcelona wins tomorrow to stay leader, as it is accustomed to doing,” Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. LUCIE, Fla.The Montreal Canadiens will look to stave off elimination from the Stanley Cup playoffs tonight when they host the Boston Bruins in Game 6 of their second-round Eastern Conference Series. The Bruins lead the series 3-2 and are trying to advance to the Conference Final for the second consecutive year. The action can be heard on TSN Radio 690 and TSN.ca/Montreal at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. The Canadiens find themselves facing elimination for the first time in these playoffs thanks to a 4-2 loss in Boston on Saturday. Reilly Smith and Jarome Iginla both scored power play goals while Carl Soderberg and Loui Eriksson added even strength markers for the Bruins, who moved a step closer to defending their Eastern Conference crown with the victory. The power play goals broke an 0-for-10 stretch the Bruins were on in the series that also dated back to an 0-for-39 post-season stretch against the Canadiens since Game 2 of their 2009 first-round series. “We expect that we are going to have to play our best game yet,” said Iginla. “We know that they are going to try to use their crowd, and we are most likely going to need our best game of the series.” Canadiens goaltender Carey Price, who made 26 saves in the Game 5 loss, believes his team will be ready to play in front of their home crowd. “You back any animal into a corner, its going to be desperaate,” said Price.dddddddddddd “I think were going to be a desperate hockey club coming into next game and I think were excited for the challenge.” The Bruins also did their best to get under the Canadiens skin in Game 5. Forward Shawn Thornton was fined $2,820.52 by the league for skirting water on Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban from the bench. The fine is the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement. For his part, Bruins head coach Claude Julien said that he did not approve of Thorntons actions while Subban on the other hand was not interested in being drawn into any controversy on the matter. “I dont need you guys to make it a big deal out of it,” said Subban. “It is one of those irritating things when youre down 4-2. They beat us, thats not the reason why we lost. Its just one of those things that frustrates you even more towards the end of the game.” The Canadiens are 3-1 at the Bell Centre after winning both games against the Tampa Bay Lightning and taking Game 3 in this series. Their only home defeat so far in these playoffs is a 1-0 overtime loss in Game 4 to the Bruins. Defenceman Nathan Beaulieu took part in practice this morning and later left with the regulars. He will be in thelineup this evening. Forward Daniel Briere, who was scratched on Saturday night, will also be back. ’ ’ ’

LOS ANGELES — A few minutes after John Gibson finished his NHL playoff debut by shutting out a vaunted post-season power, the Anaheim Ducks rookie goalie barely seemed to register a pulse, let alone any visible excitement. The Ducks were plenty excited for him after another surprising twist in their playoff run left them even with the Kings. Gibson made 28 saves, captain Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and an assist, and Anaheim evened its second-round post-season series with a 2-0 victory over Los Angeles in Game 4 on Saturday night. Devante Smith-Pelly also scored in the first period and Corey Perry had two assists for the top-seeded Ducks, who bounced back from two series-opening losses at home with consecutive victories at Staples Center. Anaheim regained momentum with a dynamic performance from a calm, collected 20-year-old goalie who was stopping pucks in Newfoundland three days earlier. “I think theres always nerves, but youve always got to learn to control them,” said Gibson, widely considered the best goaltending prospect in hockey. “After the first five minutes, I settled down.” If Gibson actually had any nerves, nobody noticed them while he became the youngest goalie in NHL history to record a shutout in his playoff debut. Game 5 is Monday night in Anaheim. Anaheim started its third goalie in three games with the dramatic entrance of Gibson, who made 39 saves in an AHL playoff game more than 4,400 miles east of Los Angeles on Wednesday night. He coolly backstopped the Ducks even while the final 40 minutes were largely dominated by the Kings. “He just goes about his business,” said Smith-Pelly, Gibsons teammate for much of the AHL season. “Ive watched him all year. You would think there would be some nerves, but there were none. It was just like any other game. Hes one of the more laid-back guys around.” Gibson, from Pittsburgh, made his NHL debut with three victories late in the regular season, and he got the Game 4 start from coach Bruce Boudreau in place of veteran Jonas Hiller, who started the first two games against Los Angeles and finished Game 3 after Frederik Andersen injured his right leg. “As soon as we called him up, I thought about it,” Boudreau said. “Hes been playing, and he gives us the best chance to win.” The visitor has dominated the series between teams separated by 30 miles on the I-5 freeway, and Anaheim ramped up its defence downtown to even the series - even with a revolving door in both creases in Game 4. Jonathan Quick allowed two goals in the first period for the Kings before getting replaced by rookie Martin Jones, who faced just three shots. After a dismal first period by Los Angeles, Jones replaced the Conn Smythe Trophy-winning Quick in coach Darryl Sutters apparent attempt to wake up the Kings, who then held the Ducks without a shot in the second period. “The thought process was that we had given up two goals,” Sutter said. “We should have done it sooner. They were scared to shoot (at Jones).” After losing twice at home to open the series, the Ducks took control of both games at Staples Center with first-period goals. Smith-Pelly, who replaced injured Matt Beleskey on Anaheims top line, pushed past Drew Doughty into the Kings zone and converted a pass from Perry for his third goal of his first NHL playoff run. Getzlaf had the second assist, and he got his own goal on a power play 2:43 later on his 29th birthday. The Anaheim captain threw the puck into Quicks crease from behind the net, and it banked off the Kings and in for Getzlafs team-leading fourth goal of the post-season. “We certainly have to do more in the offensive zone,” said Kings centre Anze Kopitar, whose points streak ended at 10 games. “We could barely generate anything on that first power play, and it kind of set us back. They score the two goals, and second and third (periods) we were in their zone, but weve just got to make it tougher on them.” Anaheim had never played a shot-free period in its playoff history, and Los Angeles had never held a playoff opponent without a shot for a full period until the second. The Ducks played more than 25 1/2 minutes without a shot until a power play created by Kopitars double minor for high-sticking Andrew Cogliano early in the third. Gibson made several big saves in the final minutes, stopping Kopitar, Jake Muzzin and Tyler Toffoli during one spectacular sequence. Many believed sneaking into the final playoff spot would be a success for the Raptors this season, but even that wasnt guaranteed. But with only 11 games remaining in the regular season, Toronto (40-31) sits in third place in the Eastern Conference, 2 1/2 games ahead of the Brooklyn Nets for tops in the Atlantic Division and a postseason spot all but official. This will be the first time since 2008 that the Raptors will play in the NBAs second season. With all of the good fortunes the Dinos have seen this year, who has been most integral to the teams success? DeMar DeRozan is the face of the franchise and is one of the longest tenured members of the Raptors. The 24-year-old made his first All-Star Game this season and is leading the team in points scoring 22.7 per game. This is DeRozans fifth year in the Association and he signed a four-year deal last season to stay north of the border for the foreseeable future. Will the team only go as far as DeMar will take them? Kyle Lowry has quickly become a fan favourite in only his second season in Raptors colours. The rugged point guard has shown bulldog-like toughness on a nightly basis, playing considerable minutes and being the man the team has looked to when they are in need of a spark. Analysts and fans alike thought the 28-year-old should have been in New Orleans for the All-Star Game. Averaging 17.6 PPG (scoring over 20 points in eight consecutive games) along with 7.7 assists per game makes a good case for that argument. His future is uncertain in Toronto with Lowry hitting the free agent market this summer, but the Raptors are glad to have him for the time being.dddddddddddd Is he the one to thank? Then theres Amir Johnson. At only 26, he can be considered a veteran, already playing in his ninth NBA season and is an important part of the Raps front court. He averages 11.1 PPG, 6.9 rebounds per game and is a strong force on the defensive side of the ball. Maybe the key success is coming from the sidelines. Head coach Dwane Casey is in his second year in charge of the Raptors and seems to have finally gotten through to his players. Toronto has gotten much better defensively only allowing 97.6 PPG, good enough for fifth in the NBA. Is the coachs defence-first mindset the reason the Raptors are headed to the post-season? The success could be attributed to General Manager Masai Ujiri. The Nigerian hasnt brought in a lot of highly touted talent since he took the job last off-season. Instead hes used the method of addition by subtraction to improve on the court. First, he shipped the much-maligned Andrea Bargnani off to the New York Knicks followed by sending Rudy Gay to the Sacramento Kings during the season. Toronto is 34-19 since Gay was traded out west. With the offence no longer going through Gay, the Raptors have been able to score more efficiently. Not to mention the players coming back to Toronto – namely Patrick Patterson and Greivis Vasquez – have helped the Raptors to get where they are today. Do we have to look to the front office for the reason behind the sudden improvement? So, who do you think is the most integral to the Raptors success this season? As always, its Your! Call. ’ ’ ’

TORONTO — Toronto police say theres no indication a 20-year-old Ontario Hockey League player with a Michigan team whos been reported missing has entered Canada. Police say its believed Terry Trafford, a centre with the Saginaw Spirit in Saginaw, Mich., may have left the state to return to his hometown of Toronto. But Const. Victor Kwong says authorities have no record of Trafford crossing the border. Lt. Brian Cole with Michigan state police said Monday that Trafford is considered a “voluntary missing person.” Cole says a detective is trying to confirm where Trafford last was seen and to whom he may have spoken. The team says he last was seen March 4 at the Wendler Arena, the Spirit home arena. Team president Craig Goslin says the team is “very concerned for the young man” and hope hes found soon. Not a chance. Less than an hour after wrapping up practice, an NBA spokesman confirmed in an email to The Associated Press that league officials reviewed the tapes from Thursday nights altercation and determined none of the players who stepped onto the court would be punished for the decisive game of this first-round series. It was no surprise to the Pacers. “Were planning for him to be here until were told hes not going to be in there,” coach Frank Vogel said shortly before the decision was made public. “I think he stayed in the vicinity of the bench.” Players who leave the “vicinity” of the bench during a fracas can be suspended under league rules. Few, including Stu Jackson, the leagues former disciplinarian, expected that to happen with George, who took two slow, short steps onto the court before he was pushed back by assistant coach Popeye Jones. Jackson wrote on Twitter that he didnt expect the league to suspend George, Indianas best player and an All-Star starter. Losing George would have been a major blow to the Pacers comeback hopes. George has topped 20 points in all six games, has double-doubles in five of them and has been the one Pacers defender able to slow down quick, shifty Hawks guard Jeff Teague. And it was George and David West who saved the Pacers season with a late Thursday night in Atlanta, too. All the leagues best regular season home team must do now to reach the second round and avoid the distinction of becoming the sixth No. 1 seed in league history to be eliminated in the first round is protect its home court. Lately, thats been a problem. “My thing is that three of the last four times weve played these guys (in Indy), they built 20-point leads and beat us pretty good,” Vogel said. “So I dont think anyone from this team can thinnk were going to be OK just because were back home.dddddddddddd.” The eighth-seeded Hawks understand. They had a chance to wrap up the best-of-seven series at home and rallied from a nine-point deficit in the third quarter to take a five-point lead late in the fourth. Yet they still lost. “Weve responded well all year when weve been in difficult situations,” coach Mike Budenholzer said Friday. “Part of our response is going to have to be better execution. I think we have a lot of positive reference points from all year. Our group has been very good and very resilient. I have a lot of confidence in our group.” But this is going to be different. The Pacers, who spent all season chasing the Eastern Conferences top seed, expect a raucous crowd for the first Game 7 to be played at home in the franchises NBA history. Plus, they appeared to find a defensive solution to Atlantas spread offence by going small in Game 6. The Hawks, meanwhile, have only a day to adjust to Vogels new rotations and are on their own historic quest. A win Saturday would give Atlanta the distinction of having the fewest regular-season wins (38) of any second-round team since Detroits 36-win team beat Milwaukee in the first round of the 1976 playoffs, according to STATS. “Weve won on that floor before, so we know we can do it,” Teague said. “We just have to go out there and do what we do and play our style of basketball, and it will take care of itself.” George has plenty of motivation after a stressful week that included ceding home-court advantage for the second time in the series, losing his 2014 All-Star ring in a burglary that took place while he was playing Game 5, two elimination games and speculation that his 24th birthday celebration might be marred by the announcement of a one-game suspension. Theres only one thing that really would help him relax — getting a second straight win and setting up ’ ’ ’

Four-time defending world champion Vettel and new teammate Daniel Ricciardo pulled the tarp off the RB10 on Tuesday at the Jerez circuit, just before the start of preseason testing on Tuesday. They then posed for photos with team boss Christian Horner and chief designer Adrian Newey. F1 tweaks the rules governing the engineering of cars each season, but this years changes have required a major change in design. That has led to speculation Red Bull may have trouble to extend its four-year dominance of the competition, which last year saw Vettel match Michael Schumachers record of 13 wins in one season as he cruised to the title. Red Bull said its new car is “our first interpretation of F1s radical new technical regulations” and that it “has little in common with its predecessors.” Besides switching to a 1.6-litre V6 turbo engine instead of last years 2.4-litre V8 engine, the rule changes focus on boosting cars energy recovery systems, which generate energy from braking and through waste heat from the engine.ddddddddddddF1 has also lowered fuel to 100kg per race, down from 160kg, increased the cars weight, and forced alterations to gearboxes, exhaust, nose height and wings. Mercedes and Force India also presented their cars for the new season in chilly conditions in southern Spain on Tuesday morning. Toro Rosso, Red Bulls sister team its uses to develop drivers, launched its car on Monday. Driver Jean-Eric Vergne said that the new rules means more excitement for a competition that has been owned by Vettel. “Probably (the engine) will make it (the field) a little bit more apart – maybe even closer. I really have absolutely no idea,” said Vergne. “No one in the team knows if they are in the right direction or not. It is so easy to get it wrong this year that not even after the first test in Jerez.” Preseason testing continues here until Friday. The next tests will be held in Bahrain on Feb. 19-22 and Feb. 27-March 2. The season opens with the Australian Grand Prix on March 16. ’ ’ ’

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates and right-handed pitcher Charlie Morton have agreed to a three-year, $21 million contract. The 30-year-old Morton went 7-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 20 starts for the Pirates in 2013. The deal includes a 2017 club option for $9.5 million. Morton missed most of 2012 and the beginning of 2013 while recovering from elbow reconstruction surgery. His return bolstered a rotation that propelled the Pirates to 94 wins and the franchises first playoff appearance in 21 years. Morton gives the Pirates some needed depth and stability behind Francisco Liriano and Gerrit Cole. The Pirates still hope to sign free agent A.J. Burnett, who is mulling retirement. By contrast, the Columbus Blue Jackets have become one of the leagues hottest teams. Sergei Bobrovsky made 34 saves, Nick Foligno scored twice in the third period and the inspired Blue Jackets also got goals from Ryan Johansen and R.J. Umberger in a 4-2 victory over the Ducks on Monday night. “We are really playing to our identity right now,” Umberger said. “We are working hard. We are a gritty team. We let our forecheck do the work for us. We dont score too many pretty goals. Were just kind of a team that grinds it out. We got rewarded with some rebounds and some deflections tonight. And we get big saves from Bob when we need them.” The Blue Jackets are 11-0-3 since Jan. 6, a stretch that began with a franchise-record, eight-game winning streak. Bobrovsky, last seasons Vezina Trophy winner, is 10-2-0 with a 2.17 goals-against average in his last 12 starts after missing 14 games because of a groin strain. “Theyre playing good hockey,” Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf said. “I mean, if you watch the game tape, every time they touch the puck in their zone they chip it out and they go skate onto it. That was a solid road game they played. Right now were playing teams that are fighting for that last playoff spot, and those are things weve got to notice and take into account.” Getzlaf and Mathieu Perreault scored for Anaheim. Frederik Andersen stopped 29 shots. The Ducks, who started 22-0-2 on home ice and enjoyed a comfortable lead atop the overall standings about two weeks ago, are 4-5-0 since Jan. 15 and have lost three of four on their five-game homestand. But they still lead Chicago by three points for the leagues best total with two games left before the Olympic break. “If we were a .500 hockey club, this would be the norm. But its not,” coach Bruce Boudreau said. “It all boils down to will and want, and they wanted it a lot more than us. You could see it on the loose pucks. They were getting them and we werent. And anytime there was a 1-on-1 confrontation, I didnt see us winning the battles. Thats a pure indicator, to me, that we didnt have a sense of urgency.” The Ducks host the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks on Wednesday night, less than three weeks after Chicago ended Anaheims phenomenal 18-1 surge with a 4-2 win at United Center. “Its never good to see Chicago because theyre a great team, but its probably great that Chicagos coming in,” Boudreau said.dddddddddddd “Thats maybe what we need, because if we dont play up to our best level against a team like that, then were going to get our butts kicked.” Bobrovskys best save came at 5:25 of the second period, when he flicked out his right leg at the last instant to thwart Andrew Cogliano at the end of a 2-on-1 rush with Corey Perry. The Ducks got on the board at 5:45 of the third when Perreault converted a centring pass from Patrick Maroon at the edge of the crease to trim Columbus lead to 2-1. “We havent had a lot of emotion lately. Were just going through the motions,” Perreault said. “Weve been winning so much that we kind of got into a lull right now. We have to find a way to get out of it.” Foligno got that goal back with 11:12 remaining, popping the puck over Andersens shoulder after the Ducks goalie stopped Umbergers wide-angle shot from the right corner. The other assist went to Artem Anisimov. Foligno added his 15th goal with 6:53 to play, converting a rebound with 17 seconds left on a 5-on-3 advantage after Saku Koivu and defenceman Hampus Lindholm were sent off simultaneously for high-sticking and cross-checking. Johansen won all six faceoffs he took in the first period and opened the scoring at the 11:10 mark with his team-high 23rd goal, sending a one-timer between Perrys legs and over Andersens glove from 25 feet out after Nathan Horton set him up in the left circle. “Its frustrating, as far as the start of the game. We werent ready to play,” Getzlaf said. “They came out and played hard and did their thing. Their goaltender played well early, and we just didnt respond. We kind of showed 5 minutes here and 5 minutes there, but we didnt play a complete game. Were not focused. Were not playing the way we can and doing the things we do well.” Umberger made it 2-0 at 16:43 of the second with his 15th of the season, after Ducks defenceman Bryan Allen was sent off for tripping him. Former Anaheim defenceman James Wisniewski got the puck at the top of the left circle from Mark Letestu and took a slap shot that ricocheted into the net off Umbergers right skate. NEWARK, N.J. — After watching the Colorado Avalanche struggle to generate offence for more than 57 minutes, coach Patrick Roy rolled the dice and pulled goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere with 2:30 left in regulation against the New Jersey Devils. The gamble paid off big. PA Parenteau scored with 1:47 left in the third period and Ryan OReilly had a power-play goal 28 seconds into overtime to give the Avalanche a stunning 2-1 victory Monday night. “Why wait?” Roy said after Colorado extended its winning streak to four games and posted its 13th win in 17 games (13-3-1). “Who said we have to pull the goalie with 1 minute in the game. I thought that was the right time and I thought we started generating more offence. I thought they were tired and it was a great window of opportunity there.” Once Giguere went to the bench, the Avalanche mounted constant pressure and Parenteau knotted the score by deflecting a shot by defenceman Tyson Barrie past goalie Cory Schneider. That deflated the Devils and their fans. Michael Ryder made a bad play a minute later and defenceman Andy Greene slashed Matt Duchene to prevent a breakaway with 42 seconds left in regulation. The man advantage carried into overtime and OReilly ended it by tipping Duchenes pass by Schneider for his 21st of the season. “Tonight we showed great resilience,” OReilly said. “We stuck with it the whole game. That was a big play by PA Parenteau tying the game, and it gave us a ton of momentum going to OT.” It marked the third straight game in which New Jersey has given up a late goal to force overtime. The Devils have lost their last two. New Jersey easily could have had a bigger lead, with three shots hitting the post and another stopping on the goal line. “Its unlucky until it keeps happening over and over and over again,” coach Pete DeBoer said. “I dont know. I dont know if its unlucky.” Fourth-line wing Ryan Carter scored in the first period for New Jersey, which cant afford to keep giving away points if it wants to make the playoffs. “Tonight for me the story is we have to find a way to get a second and third goal,” DeBoer said. “We got a goal from our fourth line, which is a bonus goal. We had enough chances to get five. You let anybody hang around in this league long enough, bad things happen and thats the story lately.” Giguere finished with 27 saves in winning for the first time since starting the season 7-0. He also had the iron working for him. “Ill take a little luck now — I need it,” Giguere said. “I did get lucky a few times tonight. We worked hard enough to get the two points at the end.” Schneider, who had the NHLs second-best goals-against average (1.91) entering the game, only had to make a few good saves until the final minutes. His best stops came on a chance in close by rookie sensation Nathan MacKinnon in the first period and another in close by OReilly in the third. The Devils goalie also was a little lucky. A third-period power-play shot by Gabriel Landeskog hit off defenceman Bryce Salvador and went just wide of the net. But the Avs finally found the answers late. Carter got his fifth goal of the season on a quick counterattack after Duchene lost the puck at the blue line in the Devils zone. Stephen Gionta carried the puck into the Colorado zone and fed Steve Bernier, who found Carter coming late for a shot that beat Giguere. Given a rare start with Semyon Varlamov getting the night off, Giguere had help from the iron all night. Michael Ryder hit the post with 12:30 left in the first period and Dainius Zubrus deflected a shot by Mark Fayne off the post with 4 seconds left in the period. Zubrus also clanged one off the post on a short-handed shot late in the second period, and Jaromir Jagr had a shot that stopped on the goal line early in the third. David Clarkson had the goal for Toronto, and Jonathan Bernier stopped 44 shots. Florida made it 3-1 with 6:38 left when Matthias wrist shot from the right circle beat Bernier on the short side. Goc added an empty-net goal with 2:30 remaining. Every skater on the Panthers had at least one shot on goal. “It was probably our best game of the year,” Matthias said. “It was an exciting game for us.” Toronto closed to 2-1 on Clarksons goal in the third period following a turnover by Tomas Kopecky in the Maple Leafs zone. Nazem Kadri stole the puck from Kopecky and passed to Clarkson, who beat Thomas at 9:31. “When you score a goal like that and you have a couple shifts where youre moving the puck and getting the puck into their zone, weve shown were a team that can come back from that,” said Clarkson, who returned to the lineup after missing eight games with an elbow injury. “We didnt come to play right away tonight.” Just when it appeared the Maple Leafs might make a comeback, the Panthers scored twice on Matthias goal and then the empty-netter. “I think it was pretty solid,” Panthers coach Peter Horachek said. “Even when there was down time and the game was going the other way, momentum shift, we took it back pretty quickly.” The Panthers stretchhed their lead to 2-0 on Winchesters goal at 5:21 of the third.dddddddddddd Scott Gomez made a drop pass to Campbell and his shot from the right circle deflected off Winchester and over Bernier into the top of the net. Campbell was originally credited with the goal before an official scoring change after the game gave it to Winchester. The Panthers had a goal disallowed about a minute later. A shot by Erik Gudbranson was initially ruled a goal, but video review showed the puck hit the post, went across the crease and tight-roped the goal line but never crossed it. While the Panthers felt it was one of their best games of the season, it was the opposite for some Toronto players. “Theres no excuse for the way we played,” Maple Leafs forward Mason Raymond said. “Weve had a few tough games this year but nowhere near this bad.” The Panthers took a 1-0 lead on Gilberts power-play goal at 1:14 of the second. Gilberts shot from the point got past Bernier, who was screened on the play by Floridas Scottie Upshall. The power-play goal was only the Panthers second in their past 53 opportunities. The Maple Leafs started slow, did not register their first shot until 7:19 in and were outshot 19-4 in the first. “We didnt have anything going except one person in the lineup is outstanding for our hockey club, and that was our goaltender,” Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said. “We didnt seem to have any jump or passion to play the game and its kind of mind-boggling right now.” NOTES: James van Riemsdyk, fighting the flu, flew in Tuesday morning to join the team in time to play in his 300th NHL game. … Kadri has three goals and five assists during his four-game point streak. … Gilbert has 12 points in his last 17 games. ’ ’ ’

MONTPELLIER, France – Gael Monfils beat top-seeded Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday in the final of the Open Sud de France to claim his fifth career title. In an all-French match against the defending champion, Monfils did not face any break points — hitting 34 winners to 17 for Gasquet, and serving nine aces to zero for his opponent. Monfils broke for a 4-3 lead when Gasquets forehand sailed wide and the 30th-ranked Frenchman fired an ace to take the opening set. He capitalized on another forehand error from Gasquet to break serve in the ninth game of the final set and clinched his first title of the season with a service winner. Monfils, who also won this tournament in 2010, improved to 6-4 against Gasquet. A former top 10 player, Monfils struggled with a right knee injury in 2012 and dropped to 119th in the rankings last year. He started the season with a runner-up finish at the Qatar Open in January, losing to top-ranked Rafael Nadal of Spain. This week, topics cover if and when the Blue Jays should start rebuilding, how good catchers handle a pitching staff and how best to develop young pitchers to best avoid arm problems.KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Kevin Glenn was all set to be the Ottawa Redblacks first starting quarterback. The team selected him first overall in the expansion draft to stock the CFLs ninth franchise, and following years of uncertainty he was preparing to once again be an undisputed No. 1 pivot. Then almost overnight, circumstances changed dramatically. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats released veteran quarterback Henry Burris — who led them to last years Grey Cup — at the end of January after signing Zach Collaros to be their new starter, creating an opportunity the Redblacks felt they couldnt pass up. Ottawa signed Burris to a three-year contract a few days later to be the face of the franchise — a move that Glenn met with a trade demand, one that was finally granted last month at the draft when the Redblacks dealt him to the B.C. Lions. Now at training camp with his new team and happy to be wanted, theres still a tinge of bitterness in Glenns voice when talk turns to the way things played out in the nations capital. “Everybody knows the situation in Ottawa,” the 34-year-old said this week. “I was kind of blindsided into what was going on because, not getting into everything … they knew that I wanted to be the guy in order to be in Ottawa.” He said the Redblacks didnt notify him they intended to sign Burris, simply adding: “I got it in the news the same day that it actually happened.” Glenn wouldnt speculate on how things would have played out if Ottawa had let him know what they were thinking prior to the move, but hes comfortable with his new teammates and eager to contribute. “To me, its just a better situation than it was in Ottawa. Im just being honest, from top to bottom,” he said. “It is it what it is. You dont worry about that kind of stuff. You sit back and you let everything else take care of itself. You only handle what you can handle.” He points to a roster filled with players who won a championship three years ago as why he was willing to be the No. 2 quarterback behind Travis Lulay in B.C., something he wasnt able to accept with the Redblacks. “This is not any knock towards the Ottawa franchise or the league or the fans in Ottawa or anything,” said Glenn. “Youre dealing with an expansion team versus a team (with) a lot guys who actually won the Grey Cup in 2011.” Glenn could have eventually been given a shot behind Burris, who turns 39 on Wednesday, but theres a chance he might start the Lions season opener as Lulay continues to recover from off-season shoulder surgery. “Its more opportunity. Im going to be honest,” he said. "I think thats one of the reasons why B.C. made the trade — just to say we can get another quality guy. “I think the biggest thing for us is we have two guys who can win games.” Lions head coach Mike Benevides said the team was desperate to add experienced depth at quarterback and it just worked out that Glenns situation changed at the right time. “I cant overstate how important it was to get Kevin,” said Benevides. “When you take a look at where Travis is, we know were going to need all of training camp to get him where we need to get him to.dddddddddddd When you take a look at Kevin, what Ive seen thus far (is) an outstanding teammate, a pro thats been around 14 years.” Glenn led the Calgary Stampeders to the 2012 Grey Cup game and has thrown for 39,418 yards and 222 touchdowns against 151 interceptions over his career while completing 62 per cent of his passes. “Hes thrilled to be here. He wanted to change. He got the change that he wanted, and for us now he gets to explore a lot of our offence,” said Benevides. “Its a good marriage and I think hell be able to play at a moments notice.” First-year Lions offensive co-ordinator Khari Jones, who has both played with and coached Glenn in the past, said it was critical to add a viable second option under centre after B.C. lost backup Thomas DeMarco in the expansion draft. “In this league right now you can never have too many quality quarterbacks,” said Jones. “Its a tough league. Its a tough league to play 18 games and you want to have the opportunity when your starter might not be in there to have someone whos a starter in his own right to come in and play good football and help you win games.” Although they both want to be on the field when B.C. opens its regular-season schedule later this month, Glenn and Lulay have already struck up a good working relationship, even making the four-hour drive from the Vancouver area up to Thompson Rivers University for training camp together in the same car. “Hes welcomed me with open arms (even though) were two guys fighting for the same position,” said Glenn. “That right there, hands down I have respect for you. Were not even talking about stuff on the football field and how you play, but just the person that he is.” Lulay said he watched Glenn from afar as an opponent and was impressed by how he dealt with platoon situations in Hamilton and Calgary in recent years. “He was always a guy I thought pretty highly of. Hes been a consistent guy and been able to play at a high level. Hes been in a lot of different situations,” said Lulay. "Being able to overcome that and focus on being able to go out and play and playing well, that built a lot of respect from your peer group. “Knowing that hes a guy whos seen the highs, hes seen the lows of playing the position in the league, that just builds a lot respect before I even had known him. It helps us break that trust barrier a little quicker.” Glenns ability to work in a number of different scenarios has also taken some of the pressure off Lulay to rush back from injury for a team that will be feeling the heat to perform in the tough West Division as Grey Cup hosts. “One of the things about being injured is you feel like youre letting your teammates down by not being able to be out there with them,” said Lulay. "Having a guy you can trust to lead the team is really important. “A guy that plays 14 years in this league, that doesnt happen by accident.” ’ ’ ’

BARI, Italy — French rider Nacer Bouhanni won the slippery fourth stage of the Giro dItalia in a sprint Tuesday as the race returned home after opening with three legs in Northern Ireland and Ireland. Australian rider Michael Matthews retained the overall leaders pink jersey, with organizers deciding to clock the official times with one lap to go of a circuit in the southern city of Bari because of the rain-slicked road. Still, there were several falls on the final turns. Bouhanni didnt have many established sprint rivals to contend with at the end and clocked nearly 2 1/2 hours over the flat 112-kilometre (70-mile) route from Giovinazzo to Bari — the shortest stage of the three-week race. It was the sixth win this year and the 26th career victory for Bouhanni, who rides for the FDJ.fr team. Giacomo Nizzolo of Italy crossed second and Tom Veelers of the Netherlands was third. Victorias Ryder Hesjedal finished 151st while Svein Tuft of Langley, B.C., was 193th. Tuft is seventh overall standings while Hesjedal is 156th. Matthews — whose Orica-GreenEdge team won Fridays opening team time trial — leads Italian veteran Alessandro Petacchi by eight seconds. The neutralization was demanded by the riders midway through the stage, as they completed eight laps of the finishing circuit. “It was just way too slippery,” Matthews said. “So we decided together with all of the GC (general classification) riders to neutralize.” The race sees its first bits of uphill action in stage 5 on Wednesday, a 203-kilometre (126-mile) leg from Taranto to Viggiano that concludes with a mild 5-kilometre (3-mile) climb. BERLIN — Freiburg defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 and Borussia Dortmund was held to 2-2 at home by Augsburg as Bayern Munichs main title rivals both faltered in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Bayern led second-place Leverkusen by 10 points with a game in hand, while Dortmund was another four points off the pace. Freiburg midfielder Felix Klaus scored in the last minute as his side twice came from behind to climb provisionally out of the relegation zone. “We still have an incredibly long way to go,” Freiburg coach Christian Streich said. Lars Bender scored with Leverkusens first shot in the fourth minute and Admir Mehmedi equalized with a fine strike in the 27th before Simon Rolfes restored the visitors lead eight minutes later. Jonathan Schmids free kick squeezed inside the near post in the 53rd, thanks to a light deflection from Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling on his 30th birthday, and Klaus scored the winning goal on a counterattack. “Freiburg were dangerous,” Leverkusen coach Sami Hyypia said. “We tried to win, then came the counter.” Dortmund endured an afternoon to forget as the sides bad luck with injuries continued. Poland midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski sustained suspected cruciate ligament damage to his right knee in the third minute. “The opening period was overshadowed by Blaszczykowskis injury,” said Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp, who has also had to contend with long-standing injuries to Ilkay Gundogan, Mats Hummels, Lukasz Piszczek and Neven Subotic. Sven Bender headed home side Dortmund in front in the fifth — one minute after his twin opened the scoring for Leverkusen — but conceded an own goal in the 56th, when he deflected Andre Hahns cross into his own net. Nuri Sahin restored Dortmunds lead from a free kick in the 66th, only for South Korea midfielder Ji Dong-won, who will join Dortmund next season, to score Augsburgs equalizer in the 72nd just two minutes after going on as a substitute. “You could see wed set our sights high,” Klopp said. “But you could also see that that can lead to tension.” Elsewhere, Nuremberg defeated Hoffenheim 4-0 for its first win of the season, Hannover won 3-1 at Wolfsburg for its first away win, and Mainz earned a 2-1 win at Stuttgart. Alexander Meiers 36th-minute strike against the run of play was enough for Eintracht Frankfurt to defeat Hertha Berlin 1-0 in the late game. The visitors might have had a penalty with some 20 minutes remaining, when Carlos Zambrano appeared to catch Ronny in the face with his elbow. The referee didnt see it, however, and booked the Hertha midfielder for protesting. Nuremberg coach Gertjan Verbeek had vowed not to shave until his side finally won in the league. “Im very happy with the win, also that the beard is shaved,” the Dutchman said. “It was important for us to take the lead.” United States international Timmy Chandler opened the scoring with a deflected shot in the 24th, before two goals from Josip Drmic and another from Daniel Ginczek gave Nuremberg its first Bundesliga victory at the 18th attempt this season. Belgian midfielder Kevin de Bruyne made his debut for Wolfsburg following his switch from Chelsea for a reported 22 million euros ($30 million). Artjoms Rudnevs scored on his Hannover debut in the 28th, and Leonardo Bittencourt added two more in the 50th and 72nd for Hannovers first away win of the season in Tayfun Korkuts first game in charge. Ivica Olic had pulled Wolfsburg level in the 35th. Korkuts predecessor, Mirko Slomka, who was fired during the winter break, watched from the stands. In Stuttgart, Mohammed Abdellaoues 11th-minute opener for the home side was cancelled when Shinji Okazaki seized on a mistake from Japan teammate Hiroki Sakai to score against his former side in the 39th. Mainz substitute Benedikt Saller snatched the winning goal in the 87th. “The bottom line is that its a lucky win,” Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel said. “But its one of our qualities, to wait, to lurk.” . The Wichita Wingnuts demonstrated clearly why they have the best record in the American Association. Wichita scored four runs in the first inning off Goldeyes starter Joe Sintes and cruised to a 10-3 victor, as Wichita improved to a league-best 53-32 on the season. With the loss, the Goldeyes had their two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 47-30. Their lead over the St. Paul Saints in the North Division of the American Association fell to just two games. The Saints beat Sioux City 4-2 on Thursday. “We just dug ourselves a hole early and couldnt quite climb out of it,” said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. “When we scored three runs in the fourth to make it 5-3, I thought we might have a chance to come back, but he (starter Joe Sintes) loaded the bases and we gave up that grand slam (reliever Taylor Bratton) and that was it. “Thats a good team playing very well right now. Theyre hot. They showed us why they have the best record in the league.” A three-run first-inning home run homer by Carlo Testa and a grand slam homer by Chriss McMurray in the fifth were the big blows, as Wichita scored four in the first and four more in the fifth to put the game away.dddddddddddd However, after falling behind 5-0, the Goldeys battled back in the fourth to make it 5-3. Casey Haerther led off with a single, Reggie Abercrombie doubled, Haerther scored on a ground out by Luis Alen and Abecrombie came home ahead of Jake Blackwood who hit a two-run homer. But in the top of the fifth, Wichita got the grand slam from McMurray, that made it 9-3 and the Goldeyes were done. Jason Van Skike (9-3, 3.19 ERA), who started the All-Star Game in Winnipeg late last month, earned the victory, while Sintes (0-2, 13.50 ERA) suffered the loss. There was no save. The Wingnuts finished with 10 runs on 12 hits, while the Goldeyes managed just three runs on 12 hits. The Goldeyes left at least one runner on base in every inning but the ninth. The Goldeyes and Wingnuts will meet in Game 2 of this four-game series on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Shaw Park. Justin Kipp (3-1, 2.60 ERA) will get the start for the Wingnuts, while the Goldeyes starter is still to be determined. ’ ’ ’

SILVERSTONE, England — Biding his time to pounce, Mark Webbers patience in chasing down pole-sitter Fernando Alonso paid off four laps from the end of the British Grand Prix on Sunday. Webber stayed out in front to claim his second victory of the Formula One season for Red Bull and trim Alonsos lead in the championship over him to 13 points. “Fernando is a wily old fox, I thought he was looking after the tires and just waiting to pull the pin and go a little bit,” Webber said. "But when I got within two seconds I thought maybe hes in a little bit of trouble and it was real. “It was completely game on when I knew the DRS (drag reduction system) was available, I made the move stick and our hard work paid off for the win.” The victory leaves Webber and Alonso as the only drivers to win more than once in this unpredictable season, with two victories each. “Im very proud of the Ferrari recovery in the last few weeks and now we are fighting for the victory in the last three or four grands prix. So were heading in the right direction,” said Alonso, who won the European GP two weeks ago. “We were controlling the race more or less OK until the last stint, we were now quick enough and when Mark arrived I think he overtook very easy and there was nothing we can do.” It was the second time in three years that Webber has triumphed at Silverstone. The Australian driver lives nearby and he says staying at home aids his performance. “There is that extra little bit that makes you a little bit more relaxed and a bit more comfortable,” the Australian said. The conditions also helped, with sunny spells at the central England circuit after two days of rain that caused chaos on and off the track for practice and qualifying. Webber upstaged world champion teammate Sebastian Vettel, who held off Ferraris Felipe Massa to finish third. “Sebastian knows in Mark he has a very genuine competitor,” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said. “And Mark knows Sebastian has been the benchmark for the last couple of years.” Now, though, it is Webber setting the pace, 16 points ahead of his teammate in the standings as he starts to negotiate a new deal. “Im pushing to get a contract for next year,” Webber said. “(Its) going reasonably well, got a few points, a couple of wins and I will work very hard to try and stay in Formula One next year.” It was a disappointing day for the leading British drivers as Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button failed to make the podium. Hamilton, who is fourth in the drivers standings, finished eighth and McLaren teammate Button was two places behind but just inside the points after starting from 16th. Hamilton had taken the lead after starting on hard tires as rivals stopped to pit earlier than him, but pole-sitter Alonso easily caught him. “Its hard to understand how we could be leading the race at one point and then fall back to eighth place, especially as our car doesnt feel bad overall,” the 2008 world champion said. “I raced my heart out and was flat-out right to the end. Were still in the hunt for the world championship.” Michael Schumacher had started from third, but failed to make the podium for the second successive race as he finished seventh. Sauber was fortunate to avoid a more serious calamity when Kamui Kobayashi braked late while pitting on lap 37 and hit several members of his pit crew. The Japanese driver was fined C25,000 ($31,000). Two mechanics were taken to the circuit medical centre — one with an injured thumb and another with "cuts and bruises — while a third was treated for a bruised foot in the Sauber garage. “(It) was my fault and I want to apologize to the team,” said Kobayashi, who finished 11th. Sauber was in the spotlight earlier in the race when Sergio Perez collided with Pastor Maldonado of Williams on lap 12 and was forced to retire after spinning off the track. The race stewards gave Maldonado a C10,000 ($12,300) fine after the incident, which led to Perez accusing the Venezuelan of being a “very dangerous driver.” “He didnt give me any room,” Perez said. “He has no respect for other drivers.” . The Raptors clinched the franchises second Atlantic Division title, despite a home loss to the New York Knicks on Friday night. When the Brooklyn Nets lost to the Atlanta Hawks the same night, the Raptors sealed up the division for the first time since the 2006-07 season. “Were still anxious,” said DeMar DeRozan. “We still want more. Were not satisfied with nothing. We understand we have much more basketball to play and a long road to go and we want to take advantage of it, not just get there and say we got there, where people doubted us. We definitely feel like we can go in and make some noise.” Toronto fell a game behind the Chicago Bulls in pursuit of the third seed in the Eastern Conference. If the Raptors are victorious today they will tie the franchise record for wins in a season. They won 47 games in 2000-01 and matched that in 2006-07. DeRozan paced the Raptors with 26 points against the Knicks. Kyle Lowry tallied 25 and Jonas Valanciunas ddropped in 14 points with a career-high 21 rebounds.dddddddddddd “It sucks that we lost the game, but it feels great to win the division,” said DeRozan. The Pistons have lost two straight since a two-game winning streak. On Friday, Detroit blew an 18-point halftime lead and fell, 106-98, to the Bulls at the United Center. “You play the Bulls, and especially in this building, you know its going to be a 48-minute war,” Pistons coach John Loyer said. “Whether youre up 18 or down whatever, youre going to have to come in here and compete. That team competes on every possession. You cant take your foot off the pedal for a second.” Andre Drummond registered 26 points and 26 rebounds for the Pistons. He matched a career-high with the 26 rebounds after he grabbed that many in a March game against the Knicks. Rodney Stuckey added 22 points in defeat, while Brandon Jennings netted 17 and Peyton Siva chipped in 12 off the bench. Detroit will close the regular season Wednesday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Chesapeake Energy Arena. The Raptors have won both matchups this season, although both contests were in Toronto. Detroit has taken four of the last five as the host in this series. ’ ’ ’

CLEVELAND — The Washington Wizards lost Nene to a knee injury, and then won the game with a strong effort on defence. John Wall scored 21 points, Bradley Beal had 17 and the Wizards beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 96-83 on Sunday night. Washington had a 66-63 lead midway through the third quarter when Nene departed with a sprained left knee. The Wizards then held the Cavaliers to 11 fourth-quarter points to return to .500 at 28-28 on the season. They also strengthened their hold on the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference standings. “Were a team right now thats just trying to play the right way and get on a roll,” Wall said. Nene had eight points, four rebounds and four assists in 21 minutes. He was coming off one of his best games with the Wizards, when he had a career-high 30 points in Saturdays win over New Orleans, including the game-winning dunk with less than a second left. Coach Randy Wittman said Nene banged knees with Spencer Hawes and will get an MRI on Monday. Luol Deng led Cleveland with 17 points and the injury-riddled Cavaliers lost for the second straight time after winning six in a row. The Cavaliers played without centre Anderson Varejao (sore back) and guards Dion Waiters (hyperextended left knee) and C.J. Miles (sprained left ankle). While the Wizards are in good shape to snag a playoff spot in the weak Eastern Conference, the Cavaliers are five games out of the final post-season slot. Kyrie Irving, who scored 15 points, admitted that hes looking at the standings. “You have no choice but to pay attention to it,” he said. “We want to accomplish something, but it starts with every single game. Time is of the essence right now.” Washington led 78-72 after three quarters, and then grabbed control in the fourth. Two baskets by Kevin Seraphin, who replaced Nene, and five points by Beal helped the Wizards build a double-digit lead before Trevor Arizas 3-pointer with a little over a minute left made it 96-81. “We felt bad when he got hurt, but during the game, you have to keep focused the whole way, which we did,” Seraphin said. The Cavaliers shot 49 per cent in the first half, but were 4 of 19 from the field in the fourth quarter. “The ball just seemed to stick in one area,” Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. “It was almost like we played in an elevator at times. It wasnt crisp like it was in the first half.” Ariza scored 15 points and Marcin Gortat had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Hawes, playing his second game since being acquired from Philadelphia on Thursday, had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Cleveland. The Wizards used a 12-0 run midway through the first quarter to go ahead for good. Cleveland got within one point several times in the third quarter but never pulled even. The game featured two of the top young point guards in the league in Irving and Wall. Irving was the MVP of the All-Star game and Wall won the dunk contest. Wall ended the first half with a dunk and two 3-pointers in the final 1:21. He banked in a 30-footer to beat the halftime buzzer, giving Washington a 58-52 lead. Washington scored the first two baskets on a tip-in and a fast break after a bad pass by Irving, leading to a timeout by Brown just 31 seconds into the game. Browns message obviously worked as the Cavaliers took a 13-8 lead, but the Wizards scored the next 12 points to go ahead 20-13. The teams split the season series, with the road team winning all four games. “The last time we played Cleveland, we gave the game away,” Ariza said. “They played harder than us the last time. We did our best to prevent that from happening again.” Hawes made his home debut late in the first quarter. He had 13 points and seven rebounds in 14 first-half minutes. NOTES: While theres no timetable for the return of Clevelands injured players, Varejao, who has missed the last six games, was on the court at Saturdays practice. Waiters hasnt been able to run since being injured Tuesday while Miles is still using crutches after hurting his ankle Wednesday. … The Wizards are 11-6 in their last 17 road games. Washington is 14-14 on the road and at home. … Cavaliers F Tristan Thompson, a native of Canada, celebrated his countrys win over Sweden in the gold-medal hockey game at the Olympics. “Were supposed to win,” he said with a smile … Wizards F Otto Porter, the third pick in the draft, didnt play for the fourth time in six games. Rousey soared to the top of her sport and broke new ground for female athletes throughout 2013. She has made a reality television show, two blockbuster films and a whole lot of money in the 10 months since her UFC debut, along with countless media appearances and profile-raising endorsements. To cap it off, Rousey (7-0) is a heavy favourite in her rematch with Miesha Tate (13-4) in the penultimate bout Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden. Middleweight champion Chris Weidmans rematch with Anderson Silva is the pay-per-view shows main event. Although Rousey beat Tate handily last year with her signature armbar submission in the Strikeforce promotion, interest is high in the rematch after Rousey and Tate served as combative coaches on the most recent season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” the UFCs reality competition show. Rouseys disdain for Tate is palpable, and shes confident fans will feel it. “If the Real Housewives threw down at the end of their season, how great would that be?” Rousey asked. “Every schoolyard in the world loves a fight. Thats how you get them to glance at us.” With just one UFC appearance and three years of pro experience, Rousey has soared to heights reached by almost no other MMA fighters. Even before she beat Liz Carmouche last February in the UFCs first womens bout, the 135-pound former Olympic judoka had been targeted by the sports-entertainment complex as a rising star. She has spent the last year doing her best to embrace every opportunity while trying not to neglect the sport that got her to this lofty position. For instance, while in Bulgaria to film “The Expendables 3,” Rousey worked out with Victor Ortiz, the ex-champion boxer who also had a part in the film. Ortiz helped Rousey with a few fine points of standup fighting when they werent running hills — and slowly getting exhausted with the hours of waiting necessary to be in a major film. “The movie stuff was fun, but by the time it wass over, I said, Oh, thank God,” Rousey said.dddddddddddd “Im so ready to get back in the gym. … Its tough to have to look good and say some line 19 million times. Id rather slum it and not shave and punch things.” Rousey seemed to enjoy her film work, but her other experience on camera didnt go as well. Rousey emerged from “The Ultimate Fighter” furious over the narrative dishonesty of reality shows, specifically the poking and prodding done to make Rousey appear to be a humourless villain while coaching eight fighters against Tates team. “I really felt mistreated and disrespected by the whole production staff,” Rousey said, citing “constant inhumaneness and insensitivity. The gym is my safe place. Its where I maintain my sanity, and they really bastardized that place for me. They needed a villain, and they made me fit that role.” Rousey also acknowledges that she “purposely instigated the rivalry” with Tate to get people to watch their pay-per-view spectacle. Since Rousey has already beaten Tate, who then lost to No. 1 contender Cat Zingano, Rousey realized the matchup would be a tough sell without the personal spice to flavour it. Tate has been content to play a bemused spectator to Rouseys intensity, but Rousey insists its all an act. “When she walked on to that show, I shook her hand,” Rousey said. “When she left, I flipped her off. So yeah, a couple of things happened between them.” Rouseys wild life is likely to continue after her second fight with Tate. Shell have additional film opportunities, although she wont allow her agent to discuss them until after the bout, and her fame is likely to grow along with her sport. She also hopes to fight twice a year for the foreseeable future, although she realizes shell have to keep getting better to stay on top of the sport she has led to wide exposure. The UFC recently added a 115-pound womens division, doubling its roster in the new year. “Its really encouraging for me that womens MMA is exiting the experimental phase,” Rousey said. “I dont have to worry about the whole sport resting on me. Its better for everybody.” ’ ’ ’

Scott Cullen has injury updates on Sale, Trumbo, Lind, Hamilton and more, best fantasy adds and closer notes. INJURIES – White Sox ace LHP Chris Sale is on the DL with a strained flexor muscle. Though indications are favourable (ie. not requiring surgery), its also reasonable to expect that the White Sox will be cautious with any recovery timeline. Hes one of the best pitchers in the game and its not worth long-term trouble to have him come back a couple starts sooner. Anyway, the White Sox also have Felipe Paulino on the DL, so they have added Andre Rienzo and Charlie Leesman to the starting rotation. Rienzo had a 4.82 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 10 starts last season and a 3.93 ERA in 24 career starts at Triple-A. Hes whiffed 132 in 133 2/3 IP at Triple-A, but his strikeout rate in the bigs (6.0 K/9) isnt as promising. Leesman, a 27-year-old lefty, has struggled, with a 9.00 ERA in 18 major-league innings after he had a 2.92 ERA in 45 starts at Triple-A. A terribly low strikeout rate (3.2 K/9) in the minors and not much velocity figure to be issues in the bigs. – 35-year-old Rockies RF Michael Cuddyer has a strained hamstring and gets a turn on the DL as a result, putting a break in a strong start (.317 AVG, .906 OPS) to the season. Cuddyers absence leaves more regular playing time for Charlie Blackmon, whose .410 batting average ought to be good enough for that, but he plays all three outfield spots for the Rockies. Brandon Barnes, hitting .317 with three steals in 49 plate appearances, gets some time in right field as well. – Diamondback LF Mark Trumbo was off to a great start (7 HR, 19 RBI), at least in terms of power, since his .210 batting average is no prize, but hes out with a stress fracture in his foot — likely for an extended period — leaving Cody Ross as the regular left fielder in Arizona. Ross is off to a tough (1-for-22) start, so Roger Kieschnick, a 27-year-old who has an .888 OPS in 174 games at Triple-A, might have an opportunity to play some too. – Blue Jays DH Adam Lind hits the DL with a strained lower back (hitting .324 with a .924 OPS in 32 plate appearances), which gives Juan Francisco a regular shot in the lineup. Francisco, 26, hasnt been able to stick as a major-league regular yet, but has 32 home runs in 790 career plate appearances. He has power. – The Angels in the outfield include a couple of new faces because both LF Josh Hamilton and RF Kole Calhoun are out. Hamilton suffered a thumb injury and is still at least a month away from returning. Calhouns ankle injury should have him out for 3-5 more weeks, so he and Hamilton are in the same ballpark for return time. In their absence, though, the Angels have turned to J. B. Shuck and Collin Cowgill as the primary corner outfielders. Shuck offers bit of speed and no power and has a .296 average in 832 Triple-A at-bats. In 571 career major-league at-bats, 26-year-old Shuck has hit .280 with four home runs and 10 stolen bases. Cowgill, 27, is a .241 career hitter in the major leagues, but has been a productive Triple-A hitter (.313 AVG, .873 OPS in 903 plate appearances). Neither has done enough to warrant fantasy consideration yet. – Its not a huge deal that the ace of the Houston Astros pitching staff is out but, credit where its due, RHP Scott Feldman has been great in his first four starts (2-1, 1.69 ERA, 0.94 WHIP), though Feldman has been the beneficiary of good fortune, with only nine strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings and a BABIP of .195. All that taken into account, hes still the de facto ace of a young Astros staff and is out with biceps tendinitis. In Feldmans absence, 26-year-old Collin McHugh — who had nine career starts with the Rockies and Mets previously — gets a look and his first start for the Astros, at Seattle, resulted in three hits and no walks allowed, along with 12 strikeouts. McHugh has a 3.64 ERA, with 166 strikeouts in 187 2/3 IP, in 35 career games at Triple-A, so he has some upside, but keep in mind that he wasnt considered good enough to make Houstons rotation out of spring training. – Cardinals RHP Joe Kelly is out with a strained hamstring, giving Tyler Lyons a chance in the Cardinals rotation. In 59 career major-league innings, Lyons has a 4.58 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, with 50 strikeouts. The 26-year-old has a 3.73 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 35 Triple-A appearances (34 starts), so hes a viable addition in deeper leagues, pitching for a strong team and all. – Royals CF Lorenzo Cain, sidelined with a groin strain, was off to a decent start (.333 AVG, 2 SB in 12 GP) before getting hurt. Speedster Jarrod Dyson gets more regular playing time with Cain out. In 21 plate appearances this year, Dyson is hitting .368 and has stolen three bases. – Pirates LHP Wandy Rodriguez is dealing with a knee injury, resulting in a move to the DL, and 25-year-old RHP Brandon Cumpton has taken his spot in the rotation. Cumpton has a 2.15 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in seven major-league appearances. No, hes not that good, but in 24 Triple-A appearances (22 starts), he had a 3.06 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 101 strikeouts in 141 innings. – Mets CF Juan Lagares, off to a nice start (.314 AVG, .816 OPS) is out with a strained hamsring, giving Chris B. Young and Kirk Niewenhuis time in centre field. Young was once a power and speed guy, but has been a part-time player the past couple seasons, in part because his batting average is abysmal. Nieuwenhuis is a .234 career hitter, with 11 home runs in 394 at-bats. – Yankees LHP Ivan Nova is the latest in a long line of starting pitchers headed for Tommy John surgery. He had an 8.27 ERA through four starts and it looks like Vidal Nuno (3.68 ERA in 29 1/3 career IP) is first up to fill in for Nova in the Yankees rotation. BEST ADDS (Players available in at least 40% of TSN leagues) Adam Dunn, DH, Chicago White Sox – 5 HR, 11 RBI, .266 AVG, 11 R, 64 AB (Available: 86.5%) David Murphy, RF, Cleveland – 2 HR, 17 RBI, .290 AVG, 9 R, 62 AB (Available: 82.2%) Dayan Viciedo, RF, Chicago White Sox – 1 HR, 9 RBI, .377 AVG, 9 R, 69 AB (Available: 82.1%) Lucas Duda, 1B, N.Y. Mets – 4 HR, 10 RBI, .254 AVG, 10 R, 636 AB (Available: 91.1%) Scooter Gennett, 2B, Milwaukee – 1 HR, 7 RBI, .317 AVG, 5 R, 2 SB, 63 AB (Available: 95.9%) Jenrry Mejia, RHP, N.Y. Mets – 3-0, 1.99 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 25 K, 22 2/3 IP (Available: 80.4%) Alfredo Simon, RHP, Cincinnati – 3-0, 1.30 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 17 K, 27 2/3 IP (Available: 50.9%) Wily Peralta, RHP, Milwaukee – 3-0, 2.19 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 19 K, 24 2/3 IP (Available: 71.0%) Zach McAllister, RHP, Cleveland – 3-0, 2.28 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 17 K, 23 2/3 IP (Available: 79.8%) CLOSER NOTES – As the Reds wait for LHP Aroldis Chapman to return, RHP Jonathan Broxton has four saves in five appearances. Early indications are that Broxtons velocity is down and hes throwing more sliders than ever before. – Its not as if holding the closer title in Houston is a particularly valuable designation. Despite allowing a walk-off three-run home run in his last appearance, Josh Fields seems to have the edge on Chad Qualls. – In Oakland, the As have said that Jim Johnson is back in consideration for ninth-inning work after some early-season struggles. Luke Gregerson and Sean Doolittle are the other options to consider if Johnson falters again. – Trying to find a solution with Bobby Parnell done for the year, the Mets have turned to veteran Kyle Farnsworth, ahead of Jose Valverde. Daisuke Matsuzaka is also a possibility and hes been effective (1.69 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, 5 1/3 IP) out of the bullpen so far. – With control issues plaguing Pedro Strop and Jose Veras unable to get anyone out, the Cubs closer role could be going to Hector Rondon, the 26-year-old who has been their most effective reliever (0.79 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 11 K, 11 1/3 IP) this season. The three-time Pro Bowl cornerback signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals on Thursday, saying he was lured by the teams aggressive pursuit of him and the fact that the team is developing into a contender. “I was looking for a team that was contending,” Cromartie said at a late afternoon news conference, “and I found it. Like I said, they are moving in the right direction.” Despite Cromarties pedigree, there was no avalanche of interest from other teams when the New York Jets released him on March 9. “I dont know. I really dont know,” he said when asked why. “Maybe it was playing into my age, I dont know. Maybe it was playing into my hip. No one knew the outcome of my hip from last year or anything like that. I dont know, but Im happy where Im at.” Cromartie was bothered by a hip flexor strain the first 12 weeks of last season but said it improved over the final month. " Right now, I feel like Im 100 per cent," he said. “Ive been running around, cutting and doing everything else. I havent had any problems with it.” The Cardinals move is in line with a flurry of one-year deals general manager Steve Keim signed players to in his first months on the job last year. “Just like a lot of the other guys that weve signed in the past, I feel really good about the fact that a guy who has a chip on his shoulder, has huge upside, has all the physical tools and has played at a high level,” Keim said, “and now were bringing him in on a one-year deal where hes ready to prove to the NFL and the world that hes still the same kind of guy.” Cromartie called his release by the Jets and the relative disinterest from other teams “big-time motivation” for his coming season. “You dont get many phone calls, but its mootivation to come out for one (year).dddddddddddd You are part of a team that is right where it needs to be. It is a team that is committed to winning and also a team that is right on the edge, on the verge of being a Super Bowl championship team and thats what you look for. Im a veteran guy. Im going into my ninth year, and thats what you look for.” Cromartie led the Jets last season with three interceptions. He also had eight passes defenced and one forced fumble. He was released by the Jets on March 9. For his career, Cromartie, the No. 19 overall pick by the San Diego Chargers in the 2006 draft, has 28 interceptions, 97 passes defenced, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He has had two interceptions in the playoffs. Cromartie start alongside Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson. Tyrann Matiheu played the nickel corner as well as safety as a rookie last year before going down with torn knee ligaments. Cromartie called that a formidable trio. “When you add all three of us into the secondary,” Cromartie said, “it just speaks volumes of what this secondary can be because you have three guys on the back end that have the potential of making an interception and turning it into a touchdown. You have three playmakers on the back end. Thats what you are looking for. You are looking for guys to be a great tandem on the back and be game changers at the end of the day.” Cromartie reportedly was interested in returning to the Jets but visited the Cardinals last week. He was named All-Pro after leading the NFL with a career-high 10 interceptions in 2007. He has scored five touchdowns, including a 109-yard interception return that is tied for the longest play in NFL history. Cromartie has missed one game the past four seasons. He is the third significant free agent signing for the Cardinals, joining left tackle Jared Veldheer and wide receiver-kick returner Ted Ginn Jr. ’ ’ ’
