Téma: Jak postupovat / project signed by the Pi (Sports Network) – After finally finding a way to cool off Albert Pujols and the majority of the Cardinals lineup, the Houston Astros hope J.A. Happ can pitch them to a series victory this evening in the finale of a three-game set with St. Louis at Minute Maid Park. Behind Albert Pujols fifth homer in four games, the Cardinals took Tuesdays opener by a 7-4 margin to run their winning streak to four straight games, but were held to just two hits in last nights 4-1 loss. Houston starter Bud Norris carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before yielding a two-out homer to Lance Berkman that barely cleared the fence in right. It was the lone hit Norris gave up over his eight-inning start, though he did walk five in the victory. He really kept the ball down in the zone. He had 11 ground ball outs, which I think is really huge for him, Astros manager Brad Mills said of his starter. Berkman was also impressed with his former teammate. Hes got great stuff, a great mentality. He reminds me a lot a Roger Clemens in terms of his aggressiveness and mound presence, and thats about as high a praise as I can give somebody, Berkman said. Carlos Lee and Jason Michaels both drove in a run, while Hunter Pence extended his career-best hitting streak to 19 straight games as the Astros halted a four-game losing streak overall and five-game slide to the Cardinals. Pence is hitting .383 (31-for-81) over his hitting streak, the longest by a Houston player since Miguel Tejadas 21-gamer in 2009. He will try to keep his run going tonight and support Happ, who will be looking to halt a three- decision losing streak. Despite lowering his earned run average for an eighth straight start, Happ took a loss in San Diego on Friday. The southpaw was charged with three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings of a 3-1 setback, falling to 3-7 in 12 starts this year with a 4.65 ERA. The 28-year-old Happ is 1-4 with a 5.13 ERA in six career starts versus the Cardinals, including a pair of losses in 2011. He has been charged with five runs over 11 innings in that span, giving up homers to Allen Craig, Tyler Greene and Matt Holliday. Happ, though, wont have to worry about Craig (right knee) or Holliday (quadriceps) tonight because of injury. Happ will have to find a way to slow down Berkman in his former ballpark. The St. Louis slugger is 10-for-20 in five games at Minute Maid Park this year, slugging four homers with 10 RBI. After Jaime Garcia lasted just five innings and allowed three runs in last nights loss, the Cardinals turn to Lance Lynn tonight in the 24-year-olds second major league start. Lynn won three straight starts and four decisions in a row with Triple-A Memphis this year before getting called-up to make the start last Thursday versus the Giants. The right-handers luck didnt follow him to the big leagues as he gave up five runs on four hits with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings of a loss. Lynn did retire the first 10 batters he faced before hitting Tejada with a pitch and then serving up a homer to Aubrey Huff in the fourth inning. The 30-year-old Volquez went 9-12 with a 5.71 ERA in 2013 while splitting time with the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The deal is pending a physical. Volquez is the latest reclamation project signed by the Pirates. Volquez was an All-Star in 2008 when he went 17-6 for the Cincinnati. He has spent the last five years dealing with injury and other issues.dddddddddddd He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2009 and served a 50-game suspension in 2010 for using performance-enhancing drugs. Volquez gives the Pirates some rotation depth if the team cannot sign free agent A.J. Burnett, who is mulling retirement. Téma: Jak postupovat / into the left circle and JEREZ, Spain — Red Bull has unveiled the car it hopes Sebastian Vettel will steer to a fifth consecutive Formula One world championship, adapting to a major switch to six-cylinder engines. Four-time defending world champion Vettel and new teammate Daniel Ricciardo pulled the tarp off the RB10 on Tuesday at the Jerez circuit, just before the start of preseason testing on Tuesday. They then posed for photos with team boss Christian Horner and chief designer Adrian Newey. F1 tweaks the rules governing the engineering of cars each season, but this years changes have required a major change in design. That has led to speculation Red Bull may have trouble to extend its four-year dominance of the competition, which last year saw Vettel match Michael Schumachers record of 13 wins in one season as he cruised to the title. Red Bull said its new car is “our first interpretation of F1s radical new technical regulations” and that it “has little in common with its predecessors.” Besides switching to a 1.6-litre V6 turbo engine instead of last years 2.4-litre V8 engine, the rule changes focus on boosting cars energy recovery systems, which generate energy from braking and through waste heat from the engine. F1 has also lowered fuel to 100kg per race, down from 160kg, increased the cars weight, and forced alterations to gearboxes, exhaust, nose height and wings. Mercedes and Force India also presented their cars for the new season in chilly conditions in southern Spain on Tuesday morning. Toro Rosso, Red Bulls sister team its uses to develop drivers, launched its car on Monday. Driver Jean-Eric Vergne said that the new rules means more excitement for a competition that has been owned by Vettel. “Probably (the engine) will make it (the field) a little bit more apart – maybe even closer. I really have absolutely no idea,” said Vergne. “No one in the team knows if they are in the right direction or not. It is so easy to get it wrong this year that not even after the first test in Jerez.” Preseason testing continues here until Friday. The next tests will be held in Bahrain on Feb. 19-22 and Feb. 27-March 2. The season opens with the Australian Grand Prix on March 16. Tyson Barrie scored a tiebreaking power-play goal with 7:10 left in the third period, and the Avalanche beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 on Tuesday night for their third straight win. Colorado reached the 40-victory mark faster than any team in franchise history. It also improved to 3-1 against the Blackhawks this season and moved within one point of the Stanley Cup champions for second in the Central Division. “Our objective at the start of the season was to surprise the world of hockey,” Roy said. “Today, I guess were making it even more interesting. Were one point behind these guys with one game in hand.” Barrie got open in the left circle and one-timed Erik Johnsons perfect cross-ice feed high past Corey Crawford on the glove side. It was Barries second game-winner against Chicago this season, following an overtime goal against the Blackhawks on Jan. 14. “He put it right in my wheelhouse and I was able to get everything on it,” Barrie said. “You always want to put it upstairs. I was lucky to beat Crawford there.” Paul Stastny completed the scoring with an empty-netter with 32.6 seconds left. Rookie Nathan MacKinnon got an assist on Stastnys 20th goal, extending his point streak to 12 games, tying Wayne Gretzkys record for an 18-year-old set in 1979-80. Barrie scored for the second straight game as Colorados defencemen continued to contribute offensively. The Avalanche got four goals from defencemen in a 6-3 win over Tampa Bay on Sunday. Ryan OReilly and Maxime Talbot also scored for the Avalanche, who are 17-6-1 since New Years Eve. OReilly has three goals and three assists in his last four games. “I think we know what weve got in here,” Barrie said. “Weve got a great group of guys. Its a lot of fun to play.” Ben Smith and Jonathan Toews scored for Chicago, which was without veteran forward Marian Hossa. Toews has three goals in his last two games. Hossa left Saturday nights 5-1 victory over Pittsburgh at Soldier Field with an upper-body injury and is expected to miss two to three weeks. Brandon Saad moved up again to take Hossas spot on the right side of Chicagos top line with Toews and Patrick Sharp. The Blackhawks outshot Colorado 38-21, and Chicago coach Joel Quenneville thought that statistic reflected the play on the ice for most of the game.dddddddddddd “I think we outchanced and outplayed them,” Quenneville said. “I didnt like any of the goals that went in tonight. It was one of those games.” Chicago also lost ground to St. Louis, which beat Tampa Bay 4-2 and is all alone in the Central lead, three points behind Anaheim for the top spot in the conference. “We lost a lot of ground,” Quenneville said. “A four-point swing.” Chicago and the much-improved Avalanche could meet in the opening round of the playoffs under the NHLs new alignment. “I would say 80 per cent, if not 90 per cent, said at the beginning of the year the Avalanche will miss the playoffs,” Roy said. “Its not done yet, but were certainly in good shape right now.” Colorados Semyon Varlamov made 36 saves. Crawford had 17 stops in the Blackhawks first game at the United Center since a 3-1 loss to Winnipeg on Jan. 26. The Blackhawks outshot Colorado 11-3 in a scoreless first period, but didnt generate many prime chances. Talbot put the Avalanche in front 2:49 into the second when he got his stick on Johnsons low shot from the right point. Positioned in the right circle, Talbot barely ticked Johnsons wrister, but it was enough to direct the puck between Crawfords pads. The Blackhawks turned up the pressure after falling behind, outskating the Avalanche and forcing turnovers. Varlamov helped keep Chicago off the board with several sharp saves, including point-blank stops on Toews and Peter Regin. Smith and Chicagos solid fourth line tied it at 1 with 3:08 left in the second. Capping some work along the boards with Brandon Bollig, Smith cut into the left circle and fired a shot past Varlamov with Avalanche defenceman Jan Hejda screening. OReilly snapped off a low shot from the right circle that slipped between Crawfords pads at 1:23 of the third to put Colorado ahead 2-1. Toews replied with a power-play goal at 7:17. After slipping to the right side of the net, Toews took Sharps feed and fired it past Varlamov to complete a slick passing series. NOTES: The Blackhawks acquired D David Rundblad and D Mathieu Brisebois in a trade with Phoenix before the game. Rundblad will join the Blackhawks and give them eight defencemen on the roster. Brisebois will report to Rockford of the AHL. Chicago parted with a second-round selection in this years draft to complete the trade. … Crawford wore his black leg pads against Colorado. Téma: Jak postupovat / ing more money i The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed two import players; defensive back Gabe Loper from South Alabama and linebacker Kenny Tate from Maryland. Details of the agreements are not disclosed. Loper played 2011 and 2012 on the defensive side of the ball, racking up 52 tackles with three interceptions and three broken up passes. The 23 year-old also played some wide receiver in 2013 with South Alabama. Tate had a five-year career at Maryland, where he played a variety of positions on defence and was a first-team all-ACC selection following his junior season. That year, he recorded 100 tackles, 3.5 sacks and three interceptions while being a real force on defence. In the 2011 season, he racked up 35 tackles and two interceptions in the first four games, before suffering an injury. His senior season saw him record 42 tackles, 6.5 for loss, and four quarterback sacks, after missing the first three games. UEFA President Michel Platini is trying to curb the mass levels of spending in European football with clubs set to be barred from the Champions League if they breach the so-called “financial fair play” rules. While Chelsea reduced its losses to 67.7 million pounds ($109 million) in the year to June 30, 2011, from 70.9 million pounds ($106 million), they were still higher than the two years before that. That was largely due to owner Roman Abramovich funding the signing of Fernando Torres for 50 million pounds (then $80 million) on the last day of the January transfer window in 2011. In an initial two-year monitoring period that started in July 2011, UEFAs rules allow clubs to make a total loss of C5 million ($6.5 million) in the first assessment period or up to C45 million ($58 million) if a wealthy owner makes a one-time donation to wipe out losses. Persistent loss-makers can first be barred from the 2014-15 Champions League, which currently distributes prize money of around C700 million ($900 million) each season to 32 clubs playing in the group stage. UEFA said last week that 13 clubs, including several from England, would have failed brreak-even tests on their 2010 accounts.dddddddddddd Chelsea says it is “well aware of our obligations” under the new spending rules. “The club is focused on complying with the requirements of UEFAs financial fair play regulations while maintaining its ability to challenge for major trophies,” chairman Bruce Buck said. “We would expect this to be reflected in our results for the current financial year.” Chelsea said it expects “the current years profit and loss account to show a significant improvement.” Key to that will be bringing more money into the west London club. Turnover increased by less than 10 per cent to 222.3 million pounds ($357 million) in the year to June 30, 2011, from 205.8 million pounds ($330 million). With revenue from the Champions League key to that turnover, Chelsea cannot afford to miss out on Europes elite competition next season. Andre Villas-Boas side is currently in the fourth qualifying place and would have to go through a playoff if it ended the season in the same position. Abramovich has bankrolled Chelsea since the Russian billionaires 2003 takeover, earning three English league titles and three FA Cups. In 2009, he converted 340 million pounds (then $541 million) of interest-free loans into equity to make the club debt-free. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / trong safety Reed Do Preseason is a time for new beginnings – the chance to start afresh with a belief that anything can happen. That was certainly true for Toronto FC as they opened up their training camp in Bradenton last week. The troubles and uncertainties that surrounded the club in recent years have been replaced by a new hope and optimism after an incredible offseason transformation that has included the signings of three new Designated Players, Jermain Defoe, Michael Bradley and Gilberto. I was in Florida for Torontos first training session. The energy and enthusiasm was on a completely different level compared to other years. Perhaps the biggest difference is that the squad has already been assembled and most of the key pieces are already in place. A far cry from a year ago, when Nelsen was heading into his first coaching job with a preseason squad filled with trialists. “Its a wee bit different, Ive got to admit,” Ryan Nelsen told me after training in Bradenton. Its nice to have a proper squad together all pulling in the right direction. As you can see by today, the work ethic is there, the character is there and everybody is extremely excited." The difference compared to 12 months earlier is evident in all areas, but especially in personnel. Over half of the squad currently in Florida were not with the team for preseason in 2013. However, Nelsen and the players are talking up the fact that the core of the team that finished the season is still in place. “We havent changed that much, weve probably changed the same as most teams, but weve done it in big names so it makes it even more dramatic. But thats what we had to do with this club. Thats why what we did last year had method in our madness. Weve got some big names and we will have to gel them in, but its a progression and we have to keep moving the club forward.” The theme Nelsens rookie season as head coach was “short-term pain for long-term gain,” and things have now changed quickly. With multi-million dollar signings amongst a re-shaped squad, expectations are high. But after dealing with a tumultuous first year with the club, Nelsen laughed off the suggestion that there is pressure on him to find a winning formula quickly. “Theres absolutely no pressure,” he said. “Whenever you put yourself in a situation where youve brought in good players, everybody else thinks there is expectation but for us we just try and improve every day. In everything we do, we try to become perfect. Whatever people think from outside we dont really care.” “I knew the league last year but we didnt have the right pieces to be successful. Now I think we are moving in the right direction, but Im still learning as well. Ill always keep learning. When I stop learning I may as well give up,” he said. Theres a new face heavily involved in Torontos training sessions this preseason. Englishman Adrian Lamb has joined the club as Fitness Coach. He has previously worked with Newcastle United, Preston North End and Aston Villa, and he was at Blackburn Rovers during Ryan Nelsens time as a player at Ewood Park. Nelsen told me Lambs preparation and attention to detail is immaculate, and that was easy to see during my time in Bradenton. He has very clear ideas of what he wants from the players and was impressive in the way he communicated to them. Lamb will bring a very professional approach to the teams conditioning this season and will be a key addition to Nelsens staff. In 2013, Toronto FC won just six matches and missed the playoffs by 20 points, but Nelsen and his staff have now been handed the tools they need to turn the ship around. The foundation for success will be laid over the next six weeks, as Nelsen and Co. make sure their team is ready to hit the ground running when the season opens in Seattle on March 15th live on TSN. Free safety Brandon Meriweather faces a fine and possible suspension after being flagged twice for helmet-to-helmet hits in the Redskins 45-41 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday. The NFL said Monday that Meriweathers fouls are being reviewed for potential discipline. Coach Mike Shanahan said he doesnt think there will be a suspension, but Meriweathers history of helmet-first hits makes it more likely that the league will go beyond the usual fine. Meriweather was fined $42,000 in Week 2 for a helmet-first hit that left Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy with a concussion. Later in that same game, another helmet-first hit left Meriweather with a concussion, forcing him out of the game. Meriweather said after Sundays game that he thought both hits against the Bears — on Alshon Jeffery in the third quarter and Brandon Marshall in the fourth quarter — were legal. He said hes tried to change his game to suit the NFLs tackling rules. “I think he knows exactly what he has to do,” Shanahan said. “And sometimes the intent — therres no intent there — sometimes you hit a guy a little bit higher than anticipated.dddddddddddd Even the last one, he came to the sideline and says, Hey, one guy told me it was a good hit and the other official told me he saw it differently. So theres a lot of different interpretations of it, and at the end of the day well find out.” Meanwhile, strong safety Reed Doughty suffered a concussion Sunday when the Bears attempted an onside kick in the fourth quarter. He will have to pass the leagues required tests before he can be cleared to play next week at Denver. The Redskins are already thin at safety. Rookie Phillip Thomas was lost for the season with an injury during training camp, and rookie Bacarri Rambo lost his starting job after struggling in the first two games. Washington is ranked 24th in the NFL against the pass and gave up 24 second-half points Sunday against a backup quarterback. Shanahan was asked how he would manage if he doesnt have Meriweather and Doughty. “Not a whole lot you can do about it,” Shanahan said, “except prepare the best way you can.” ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org ___ Follow Joseph White on Twitter: http://twitter.com/JGWhiteAP ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / as the game went on. Fre TAMPA, Fla. — Steven Stamkos helped make sure an outstanding first period by goalie Mathieu Garon was not wasted. Stamkos had two goals, Garon made 31 saves and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-1 on Tuesday night. “It probably wasnt the prettiest game out there, but well take the win and hopefully this starts something good,” Stamkos said. The Lightning went ahead 2-1 on Stamkos rebound backhand at 7:25 of the second. After Steve Downie scored at 11:41, Stamkos got his 22nd goal of the season to make it 4-1 with 1:15 remaining in the second. Bruno Gervais and Vincent Lecavalier also had goals for the Lightning, who had lost four of six. Defenceman Victor Hedman left in the first period with an upper-body injury. Another Lightning defenceman, Eric Brewer, was shaken up during a second-period fight with Wayne Simmonds, but did return. Both Brewer and Hedman will have their status evaluated on Wednesday. Scott Hartnell scored for Philadelphia, which is 1-3-1 over the past five games. Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov gave up Tampa Bays first three goals on just eight shots. “Their goalie played an outstanding game, but simply, our goaltending, me, by myself, have got to do better,” said Bryzgalov, who had 11 saves. “Thats the bottom line.” Gervais put Tampa Bay ahead 1-0 at 9:34 of the first. The goal came after Garon stopped in-close shots by Matt Read and Danny Briere, and made a save on Hartnell during a breakaway in the opening seven minutes. “Sometimes, as a goalie, you have to make one key save a game,” Garon said of Hartnells chance. Garon has supplanted Dwayne Roloson, who led the Lightning to the Eastern Conference finals last season, as Tampa Bays primary goalie. Garon has played in 14 of the Lightnings past 16 games. “He was real solid,” Lightning coach Guy Boucher said. “Good goaltenders do that.” Lecavalier scored late in the third. Hartnell tied it at one off the rebound of a Claude Giroux shot with 1:46 left in the first. Philadelphia outshot the Lightning 17-4 in the first period. Philadelphia went almost 10 minutes without a shot in the second and finished with three in the period. “Theyre all are not going to be Picassos,” Boucher said. “Real bad first. Real good second.” Giroux has 27 assists and 44 points this season. Jaromir Jagr also assisted on Hartnells goal, giving him 972 assists and 1,629 points in 1,304 career games. “Whats frustrating is we didnt score goals on our chances,” Jagr said. “It looked like nothing went our way. Two weeks ago, everything went our way. Thats the business.” Unlike the Flyers 2-1 overtime loss at Tampa Bay on Nov. 9, Philadelphia only used a stall tactic in its own end several times in response to the Lightnings 1-3-1 defensive zone. In last months game against the Lightning, the Flyers utilized the strategy seven times alone in the first period and ended with just 15 shots in the game. Téma: Jak postupovat / Hospital since collapsing on Mar Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week they discuss the Winter Classic, the value of the BCS, a possible rule change by FIFA and hockey tournament formats. Bruce Arthur, National Post: My thumb is up to the most recent Winter Classic between Toronto and Detroit at Michigan Stadium, despite everything. In the first period there was so much snow that even completing a pass was an accomplishment. The horn blew midway through the third – and midway through overtime, with Henrik Zetterberg breaking in – to switch ends, because of the wind. It was goofy, but with over 105,000 fans, a record, this game was an irresistible spectacle. And really, it was just hockey. Teams simplify their games all the time. The shootout is a gimmick, indoors or outdoors. And somehow, the Winter Classic makes all its imperfections seem small. Eventually the NHL will exhaust this gold mine. But on New Years Day, we got treated to something rare: beautiful ugly hockey. Dave Naylor, TSN: My thumb is up to the Bowl Championship Series – better known as the BCS – which plays out its existence tomorrow night in the National Championship game between Auburn and Florida State. In its 16-year run, the BCS brought up plenty of controversy and debate, but it also brought us a game each year featuring No. 1 versus No. 2. While some may have said it made other bowl games irrelevant, consider this weeks Orange Bowl between Ohio State and Clemson or Sugar Bowl between Alabama and Oklahoma as evidence that the BCS season was never just about one game. Next year the BCS will be replaced with the four-team playoff. But lets remember the BCS fondly as part of the evolution of college football. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is up to Sepp Blatter, normally the occupationally challenged president of FIFA who, shockingly, has come up with a good idea. Borrowing from hockey, Blatter has proposed a virtual penalty box for those who feign injuries. For decades, a visit to the soccer touchline for an apparently mortally injured player has been like a pilgrimage to Lourdes; the healing powers there are miraculous. Now, rather than sprinting back onto the field, that player would have to stay off for an unspecified spell, obliging his team to play a man down. Given the scourge of soccer fakery, Blatter is right. The time has come to institute a time penalty. Dave Hodge, TSN: My thumb would be up to hockeys tournament format, such as we see at the World Juniors and as were about to see again at the Olympics, if only it could be designed differently. To make the quarter-final round at Malmo, Canada needed to win just one game, against Germany. It was considered important to win the group, as Canada did, but it wasnt essential. The games would have been much more compelling if only four of 10 teams qualified for the so-called playoffs, instead of eight. Its worse at the Olympics. Twelve teams take part in round-robin play and all twelve move on to play outside their groups, some with winless records. So next month, wake me when there are games that will eliminate the losing teams, and when the names of those teams arent so obvious. The first photo of Muamba since his cardiac arrest showed the usually clean-shaven Bolton player bearded, fully dressed and seated with a pillow for support. An accompanying message said: “Fab wanted me to post this pic for you all and to also say thank you for such overwhelming support.” The former England Under-21 international has been in London Chest Hospital since collapsing on March 17 in the game against Tottenham. Medics worked on Muamba for 78 minutes to get his heart beating. He left his bed and began eating again this week. Andrew Deaner, the cardiologist who left his seat among supporters at White Hart Lane to help mmedics treat Muamba, has called Muambas surprisingly strong recovery “miraculous.dddddddddddd” Even so, his father and fiancee released a statement last week saying he faces a long recovery and it is still unclear whether he will ever be able to play professionally again. The quarterfinal was abandoned just before halftime and replayed this week, with Tottenham progressing 3-1. Players across Europe have worn T-shirts expressing their support for Muamba. European champion Barcelona was among the sympathetic clubs, while FIFA President Sepp Blatter has spoken with Boltons chairman and asked to be kept informed of Muambas progress. The cause of the cardiac arrest has not been discovered. Doctors said Muamba underwent a routine screening for heart defects in August. He was checked again in the hospital and the test produced a normal result. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / d had a goa NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez sued Major League Baseball and its players union Monday, seeking to overturn a season-long suspension imposed by an arbitrator who ruled there was “clear and convincing evidence” the New York Yankees star used three banned substances and twice tried to obstruct the sports drug investigation. As part of the complaint filed in federal court in Manhattan, Rodriguezs lawyers made public Saturdays 34-page decision by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz, who shortened a penalty originally set at 211 games last August by baseball Commissioner Bud Selig for violations of the sports drug agreement and labour contract. Horowitz, a 65-year-old making his second decision as baseballs independent arbitrator, trimmed the discipline to 162 games, plus all post-season games in 2014. “While this length of suspension may be unprecedented for a MLB player, so is the misconduct he committed,” Horowitz wrote. Horowitz concluded Rodriguez used testosterone, human growth hormone and Insulin-like growth factor-1 in 2010, 2011 and 2012 in violation of baseballs Joint Drug Agreement. He relied on evidence provided by the founder of the now-closed Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic in Florida. “Direct evidence of those violations was supplied by the testimony of Anthony Bosch and corroborated with excerpts from Boschs personal composition notebooks, BBMs (Blackberry messages) exchanged between Bosch and Rodriguez, and reasonable inferences drawn from the entire record of evidence,” Horowitz wrote. “The testimony was direct, credible and squarely corroborated by excerpts from several of the hundreds of pages of his composition notebooks.” While the original notebooks were stolen, Horowitz allowed copies into evidence. Rodriguezs suit accused the Major League Baseball Players Association of “bad faith,” said its representation during the hearing was “perfunctory at best” and accused it of failing to attack a civil suit filed by MLB in Florida state court as part of its Biogenesis investigation. His lawyers criticized Michael Weiner, the union head who died from a brain tumour in November, for saying last summer he recommended Rodriguez settle for a lesser penalty if MLB were to offer an acceptable length. “His claim is completely without merit, and we will aggressively defend ourselves and our members from these baseless charges,” new union head Tony Clark said in a statement. “The players association has vigorously defended Mr. Rodriguezs rights throughout the Biogenesis investigation, and indeed throughout his career. Mr. Rodriguezs allegation that the association has failed to fairly represent him is outrageous, and his gratuitous attacks on our former executive director, Michael Weiner, are inexcusable.” The suit also claimed MLB engaged in “ethically challenged behaviour” and was the source of media leaks in violation of baseballs confidentiality rules. Rodriguezs lawyers said Horowitz acted “with evident partiality” and “refused to entertain evidence that was pertinent and material.” They faulted Horowitz for denying Rodriguezs request to have a different arbitrator hear the case, for not ordering Selig to testify and for allowing Bosch to claim Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination in refusing to answer questions during cross-examination. They also said Horowitz let the league introduce “unauthenticated documents and hearsay evidence … obtained by theft, coercion or payment,” wouldnt allow them to examine Blackberry devices introduced by MLB and was fearful he would be fired if he didnt side with management. Rodriguez asked the court to throw out Horowitzs decision and find the league violated its agreements with the union and that the union breached its duty to represent him. The case was assigned to U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos. Supreme Court decisions have set narrow grounds for judges to vacate arbitration decisions, instances such as corruption or not following the rules agreed to by the parties. The three-time AL MVP admitted five years ago he used performance-enhancing substances while with Texas from 2001-03, but the third baseman has denied using them since. MLBs Biogenesis investigation was sparked after the publication of documents last January by Miami New Times. Bosch agreed in June to co-operate with MLB and testified during the hearing, which ran from September until November. Rodriguezs lawyers attacked his credibility because of that deal, which included reimbursement by MLB for costs of lawyers, up to $2,400 daily for security, insulation from civil suits and a promise to tell law enforcement he was co-operative. “The benefits accorded to Bosch under that arrangement did not involve inducements that the panel considers to be improper,” wrote Horowitz, who chaired a three-man panel that included MLB Chief Operating Officer Rob Manfred and union General Counsel David Prouty. Horowitz cited the credibility of Boschs “unrebutted testimony — testimony which was corroborated by substantial documentary evidence,” and he described how Bosch and Rodriguez communicated in code, referring to banned substances as “food.” “Once when Bosch sent a message telling Rodriguez that he was going to pick up Rodriguezs meds, Rodriguez replied Not meds dude. Food,” the arbitrator wrote. Rodriguez did not testify in the grievance, walking out after Horowitz refused to order Selig to testify. At a brief hearing Monday, MLB said it would not discipline Rodriguez for including the decision in his lawsuit. U.S. District Judge William H. Pauley III brushed aside concerns from the union about confidentiality concerns. “Given the intense public interest in this matter and Commissioner Seligs disclosures last night on 60 Minutes, its difficult to imagine that any portion of this proceeding should be under seal,” Pauley said. The arbitrator noted Bosch and Rodriguez exchanged 556 text messages and had 53 telephone calls in 2012. He said all records of text messages were produced by Bosch, while lawyers for Rodriguez said the Blackberry he used to communicate with Bosch was deactivated last March and Rodriguez no longer had it. The arbitrator said Rodriguez instructed Bosch in one message to “erase all these messages.” Horowitz recounted how Rodriguez was introduced to Bosch after a Yankees game in Tampa, Fla., in July 2010 by A-Rods cousin, Yuri Sucart, who knew Bosch through Jorge “Oggi” Velazquez. Horowitz wrote MLB was justified in citing violations of the collective bargaining agreement because Rodriguez “played an active role in inducing Bosch to issue his own public denial on Jan. 29” and “attempted to induce Bosch to sign a sworn statement on May 31” saying he never supplied the player. In determining the length of the penalty, Horowitz cited a 2008 decision in a grievance involving Neifi Perez in which arbitrator Shyam Das ruled “separate uses are subject to separate disciplines.” He said under the discipline system for positive tests, Rodriguez would be subject to at least 150 games for three violations of 50 games. Still, Horowitz thought Seligs initial penalty was too severe. “A suspension of one season satisfies the structures of just cause as commensurate with the severity of his violations,” he wrote. Rodriguezs lawyers claimed at worst the case should involve one first violation with a penalty of 50 games, and they said including the 2014 post-season was beyond the scope of Seligs original discipline. Horowitz rejected Rodriguezs argument that the lack of a positive test was proof of innocence. “It is recognized Rodriguez passed 11 drug tests administered by MLB from 2010 through 2012. The assertion that Rodriguez would have failed those tests had he consumed those PES as alleged is not persuasive. As advanced as MLBs program has become, no drug-testing program will catch every player,” Horowitz wrote. In Seligs notice of discipline to Rodriguez on Aug. 5, he said MLB actively is investigating allegations he received banned substances in 2009 from Dr. Anthony Galea, who pleaded guilty in 2011 to a federal charge of bringing unapproved drugs into the United States from Canada. Téma: Jak postupovat / oaltending we need to NEW YORK — Martin St. Louis day started way better than it finished. The former Tampa Bay Lightning star got his wish when he was dealt to the New York Rangers on NHL trade deadline day. He then got into the lineup with his new team right away, but wasnt able to celebrate his first home win on Broadway. Tyler Bozak scored on a penalty shot and then got the winning goal 1:51 into overtime to lift Toronto to a 3-2 victory over the Rangers on Wednesday night after the Maple Leafs squandered a two-goal lead in the third period. “Tonight was a gutsy comeback,” St. Louis said. “Unfortunately we didnt get the extra point, but I was happy to come here and just break the ice.” Bozak got to a loose puck in front that bounced past Rangers defencemen Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh and slammed a shot past Henrik Lundqvist to snap the Maple Leafs three-game losing streak (0-1-2) and stretch New Yorks skid to three (0-2-1). Lundqvist slammed his stick on the glass as he left the ice and was still aggravated when he got to the dressing room. “Every point is important right now. Its annoying the way it ends,” he said. “We played really well and worked ourselves back into this game. Its a big frustration right now to not come out of it with two points.” Toronto built a 2-0 lead on Bozaks second-period goal and Nazem Kadris tally in the third. The Rangers tied it on short-handed goals by McDonagh and Dominic Moore 1:19 apart. “That was tough,” Bozak said of the Rangers rally. “Just have to play well on the power play. We played well for the most part. Made better decisions, just got lackadaisical for a bit.” Lundqvist bounced back from two straight losses in which he gave up 10 goals, and finished with 26 saves. Torontos Jonathan Bernier had dropped two straight after regulation — allowing nine goals in the process |

Téma: Jak postupovat / career .195 hitter wit Paul Maurice returns to Carolina for the first time since taking over behind the bench in Winnipeg as the Jets visit the Hurricanes tonight. Viewers in the Jets region can catch the game on TSN Jets at 5:30pm ct/6:30pm et and listen to it on TSN Radio 1290 in Winnipeg. The Jets are 8-2-0 since hiring Maurice to take over for the fired Claude Noel. The surge has the Jets sitting only four points out of a playoff spot in the West. Maurice, of course, coached the Hurricanes during two separate stints from 1997-2004 and again from 2008-12. He led Carolina to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002, when they to the Detroit Red Wings. The Jets picked up a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon in Montreal, as they kicked off a four-game road trip on a positive note. Michael Frolik scored the winner in the third period and Al Montoya made 30 saves to help Winnipeg pick up its fourth win in five games. “I made the first save and our guys were there to battle,” said Montoya. “Any guy in front of the net, you mind him and take care of business.” Tobias Enstrom scored the other goal for the Jets, who will visit Washington on Thursday before playing their final game before the Olympic break Saturday in St. Louis. This evenings tilt is the first of two scheduled encounters between the Jets and Hurricanes in 2013-14, as the former Southeast Division rivals are now in different conferences thanks to realignment. Winnipeg went 3-1-0 against Carolina in last seasons series and the Jets have won four of five and seven of the past 10 in this matchup. The Jets also have claimed three in a row and four of their past five in Raleigh. The Hurricanes could have Cam Ward in net for the first time in 2014 on Tuesday, as the goaltenders team shoots for its sixth win in seven games. The Hurricanes are 5-1-0 over their past six games and the club managed to post a 10-4-0 record in January despite Ward missing the entire month due to a lower-body injury. The clubs No. 1 netminder last played for Carolina on Dec. 31 when he earned a home win over the Montreal Canadiens. Ward recently completed a conditioning stint with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League, going 1-1 with a 2.02 goals against average with Carolinas AHL affiliate. Its unclear if Ward, who is 6-7-5 with a 3.15 GAA and .895 save percentage this season, will start on Tuesday or if Anton Khudobin gets the call again. Khudobin, who was named the NHLs First Star for January, has started 13 of Carolinas last 14 games and he is 5-1-0 over his past six appearances. All told, the Russian netminder was 10-4-0 with a 2.19 GAA and .927 save percentage in January. Carolina had a four-game winning streak snapped last Tuesday in Montreal, but the Hurricanes rebounded from that 3-0 setback with Fridays 3-1 home victory against St. Louis. Jeff Skinner recorded the deciding goal early in the second period and Khudobin stopped 27 pucks for the win. Skinner, who leads Carolina with 23 goals this season, scored just his second goal of the last 10 games. Nathan Gerbe and Alexander Semin also tallied for the Hurricanes. “Right from the get go I thought our guys were focused,” said Carolina head coach Kirk Muller. The Canes enter Tuesday with 59 points, leaving them three points behind final playoff spot in the East. Carolina is also only three points in back of Philadelphia and Columbus for third place in the Metropolitan Division. This evenings test is the second tilt on a four-game homestand that will cap Carolinas pre-Olympic break schedule. The Hurricanes are 14-10-5 as the host this season. Téma: Jak postupovat / as director o The surging Montreal Canadiens will try to complete a home-and-home sweep when they visit the New Jersey Devils for Wednesdays rematch at Prudential Center. Watch it live tonight on TSN at 7pm et/4pm pt. You can also listen to the game live on TSN Radio Montreal 690 and TSN.ca/Montreal. The Canadiens notched a 3-2 regulation win over the visiting Devils on Monday, giving Montreal a 6-0-1 record over its past seven contests. The recent hot stretch has pushed the Habs into a tie for second place in the Atlantic Division, three points behind first-place Boston. Montreal will be without forward Rene Bourque, who did not make the trip to New Jersey after sustaining an upper-body injury in Monday nights win. Peter Budaj will get the call in goal. Cory Schneider will get the call for New Jersey tonight after Martin Brodeur yielded three goals on 17 shots in Mondays setback. Schneider has never faced the Canadiens. Montreal won its second game in a row in Mondays close decision against New Jersey. Alex Galchenyuk scored the game-winner for the Habs when he gave the hosts a 3-2 edge with 10:26 left in the third period. After being benched for the third period for an undisciplined penalty in Saturdays victory over Toronto, Galchenyuk earned a bit of redemption with his game-winner on Monday. Alexei Emelin missed the net on a shot from the middle, but Galchenyuk was there to steer the puck into the net on a broken play to give the Canadiens the lead for good. “I wasnt feeling low on Saturday, it happens, its part of the game. I put it behind me. I was definitely excited about this game. I wanted to play good and was happy with that goal,” said Galchenyuk. Bourque tallied a goal and an assist in the win, while David Desharnais contributed two helpers. Max Pacioretty provided the other goal for Montreal and Carey Price turned aside 27-of-29 shots to record the victory. Price was particularly sharp in the opening period, when he held the Devils to just one goal on 11 shots. “We werent ready to play in the first period. It could have been 4-0 for the Devils, but Carey kept us in the game. We owe it to our goalies to step up when they bail us out,” said Pacioretty. Price improved his career record against the Devils to 8-9-1 and he expects to get the start again in Wednesdays finale. He has a solid 2.39 goals against average and .916 save percentage in 18 career games versus New Jersey. Steve Bernier and Michael Ryder lit the lamp on Monday for New Jersey, which had a two-game winning streak snapped in the opener of this two-game series. “We played well at the start. We missed a couple of open-netters. Their defensemen made a couple of good plays and at the end that is what made the difference,” said Brodeur after Mondays loss. Devils forward Adam Henrique left the opener of the home-and-home set with a lower-body injury and is questionable for Wednesdays clash. Henrique is tied for second on New Jersey with six goals this season. The Canadiens have won three of the past four meetings against New Jersey overall, but the Devils have claimed two of the past three encounters in Newark. Montreal has a 7-4-1 road record this season, while the Devils are 5-4-2 as the host. [url=http://www.officialbroncos.us.com/Black-Brandon… Marshall Jersey[/url] . Téma: Jak postupovat / gic to 63-57. ATLANTA — Craig Kimbrel found ninth-inning drama before a big stretch by Freddie Freeman saved the night for the Braves. Justin Upton hit a three-run homer to continue another strong April, Ervin Santana earned his third win and the Atlanta Braves held off the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 on Friday night. Kimbrel gave up a leadoff single to Roger Bernadina and walked Zack Cozart to open the ninth. Kimbrel struck out Brayan Pena and Chris Heisey before earning his seventh save on Joey Vottos groundout. Freeman made a long stretch at first base for Chris Johnsons throw from third base on Heiseys groundball. Reds manager Bryan Price challenged first base umpire Vic Carapazzas ruling that Freemans foot remained on the bag. The call was confirmed, ending the game. “Freddie did a terrific job staying on the bag,” said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. He acknowledged he was nervous about the challenge before seeing the replay on the video board “and I felt kind of relaxed.” Price said that when looking across the field he thought he saw “a huge gap” between Freemans foot and the bag. He said he agreed with the confirmed out call after seeing the replay. “I had a chance to come up here and look at our own video, which is what theyre getting in New York, and it was a confirmed out call,” Price said. “They got the call right in the end, which is what were looking for.” Two Cincinnati players left the game with injuries. Third baseman Todd Frazier was pulled in the fifth with tightness in his left leg. Catcher Devin Mesoraco strained his left hamstring and stumbled after rounding third base in the seventh, before limping across home plate. Price said he was protecting Frazier, who had previous tightness in his groin. Santana (3-0) gave up four runs on nine hits in 6 2-3 innings. Following singles by B.J. Upton and Freddie Freeman off Homer Bailey (1-2) in the first inning, Justin Upton hit his team-leading sixth homer. He leads the team with 15 RBIs. “Weve seen him do this before and carry us for a while,” Gonzalez said. In 2013, Justin Upton led the majors with 12 homers in April, becoming the fastest player in Braves franchise history to reach the mark. He has hit 35 homers in April for his career, his highest total for any month. “Im just getting it going,” said Upton, who is hitting .296 and leads the team with 15 RBIs. Freeman had three hits for Atlanta to shake a mini-slump. B.J. Upton, who was hitting .205, had one hit in his first game wearing prescription glasses. “Well see how the glasses work and if Ill keep them,” he said. “I could see the ball better on both sides of the plate. It was good tonight.” Bailey allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings. He allowed at least four earned runs for the fourth time in five starts this season and has a 6.15 ERA. The Braves increased their lead to 4-0 in the second on Jason Heywards RBI single. Evan Gattis drove in a run in the third for a 5-0 lead. Jay Bruce had a run-scoring single in the Reds two-run sixth. Cincinnati added two more in the seventh, knocking Santana out of the game. Mesoraco scored on Billy Hamiltons double. Votto had a run-scoring single off Luis Avilan. A strong defensive play by right fielder Jason Heyward helped Santana in the first inning. Votto doubled with one out in the first and moved to third on Phillips bloop single. Votto was thrown out at the plate on a strong throw by Heyward on Jay Bruces fly ball. Votto, sliding head-first, was tagged out in the batters box and never reached the plate. NOTES: Price said closer Aroldis Chapman, recovering from facial fractures and a mild concussion when hit by a line drive on March 19, will throw 35 to 40 pitches in batting practice on Saturday. Armed with three straight wins against losing teams and their best record in almost two years, the Mavericks have to get ready for three games against playoff-worthy foes in the West. Ellis scored 21 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 15 and the Mavericks beat Orlando 107-88 Monday night, extending the Magics longest skid of the season to eight games. The Mavericks bounced back from a blowout loss to defending West champion San Antonio and now get set for a trip to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday, less than two weeks after blowing a late lead after Chris Paul left with a shoulder injury that still has him sidelined. “I think our mindset is different heading into this game on a three-game winning streak,” said Ellis, who scored 14 in the first half to help build an 18-point lead that withstood a few challenges after halftime. “Hopefully we continue with it.” Jameer Nelson scored 21 and Glen Davis added 19 points and eight rebounds for the Magic, who got swept on a swing through five Western Conference cities and lost by an average of 20 points. “Im disappointed that it didnt go the way we felt it should have went or could have went, but at the same time we get the opportunity to go home, see our families, sleep in our bed,” Nelson said. “You get to play in front of your home fans.” The Mavericks (23-16) moved seven games over .500 for the first time since the end of the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season — the year after they won the franchises first championship. Nowitzki did most of his damage in the first half with 10 points, two nights after scoring 20 in the third quarter on his way to a season-high 40 against New Orleans. Vince Carter, who had 17 points, was 3 of 4 from 3-point range and had consecutive 2-point baskets in an 8-0 run that finally put Orlando away in the fourth quarter. We did a good job of getting the lead back up in the game.” Jose Calderon scored 13, including a 3 at the shot-clock buzzer that gave the Mavericks their biggest lead of the first half at 58-36. The shot came after Ellis missed badly on a wild layup, but Wayne Ellington grabbed one of his season-high seven rebounds and found Calderon beyond the arc. Nelson played despite injuring a finger in a loss at Denver two nights earlier and had seven assists The veteran guards supporting cast tried to keep the game close early in the second half, with Davis scoring the first six Orlando points after halftime as part of a 21-5 run that got the Magic to 63-57. Davis scored 12 during the run. “I was being more aggressive,” Davis said. “I had nothing to lose. I ended up making a nice run and kind of getting the game under control a little bit. They just came back and made another run.” Calderon hit another 3-pointer to get the Dallas lead back to 13, and Ellis pulled up from long range with the shot clock running down to finish a 12-0 spurt that put the Mavericks up 75-57. NOTES: Mavericks F Shawn Marion sat out again with shoulder and rib injuries, and rookie point guard Shane Larkin was sidelined with a right ankle injury sustained Saturday against the Pelicans. … Magic F Maurice Harkless played despite a sore right knee and had 13 points and seven rebounds. … Nowitzki became the 24th player in NBA history with 1,400 3-pointers on a shot that put Dallas up 84-64 late in the third quarter. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / signing McCown, the Bucs lande EDMONTON – The mandate is pretty simple when Phil Kessel storms into the kind of zone he currently occupies. “Just give him the puck whenever you can,” said James van Riemsdyk after the latest Leafs win in Edmonton on Tuesday night. “Thats pretty much what everyone tries to do out there because it seems like everything he touches is going in the net.” Kessel scored for the fourth consecutive game, burying a pair against the Oilers while also adding two assists in a 4-0 victory. The 26-year-old has tallied seven goals on 13 shots in the recent four-game span, now tied for second in league scoring with 18 points. “He puts himself in a good position offensively,” van Riemsdyk said, “and hes been able to capitalize on a lot of those chances and create a lot of offence.” It took only 68 seconds for the first puck to find twine at Rexall Place. Joined at the hip by Nazem Kadri for the second straight game, Kessel burst beyond the Oilers defence, taking a soft dish from his 23-year-old teammate before beating the helpless Richard Bachman five-hole. Setting up van Riemsdyk for his sixth of the year early in the second, Kessel tallied his second of the evening a few minutes later. It was arguably the prettiest of his nine markers so far this season. Hovering to the right of Bachman on the goal-line, Kessel quickly snatched the puck off the end-boards and fired it under the bar. “Thats quick hands,” said Randy Carlyle of the effort. “And we all know he has quick hands. If you give him an open net his eyes get a little bit wider Im sure.” Kessels big night capped the second straight win for the Eastern Conference-leading Leafs (9-4-0) and first of a three-game road trip through Western Canada. “Im getting a couple good bounces right now, some good passes,” said Kessel modestly after the four-point night. “Im fortunate right now.” Five Points 1. Shutout James Reimer stopped every one of the 43 shots he faced from the Edmonton attack for his first shutout of the season. The 25-year-old has turned aside 79 of 80 shots in the past two games after a 36-save outing in a win over Pittsburgh on Saturday. Improving to 4-0-0 on the season, he now sits second among qualifying goaltenders with a .949 save percentage. “Our whole team did a great job of eliminating second chances when I lost the rebounds out there,” he said after another busy night. 2. Compliments to Kadri Kadri had another fine evening playing with Kessel and van Riemsdyk. Notching the game-winning goal in victory over the Penguins three nights earlier, Kadri had a goal and two assists against the Oilers. “He sees the ice really well and has really good offensive instincts out there,” said van Riemsdyk of Kadri, who played 16-plus minutes and has 12 points this season. Stepping in for the injured Tyler Bozak alongside two of the Leafs top snipers, Kadri has made the most of his opportunity thus far. His shifty, unpredictable attack has proved a seamless fit in a prominent role. “Nazzies a guy that enjoys the spotlight,” Carlyle said prior to the game. “He enjoys talking to [the media]. [But] he backs up what he says. Hes not one of those guys that goes out there and makes statements that hes not prepared to go out and try and back up. Youve got to love that in a player because he wants more. Thats what separates good players from great players is they can continually go and grow into the game and grow into a larger role as they get more mature and more games under their belt.” 3. Change in Direction One subtle adjustment Carlyle has asked Kadri to make relates to the direction he moves on the ice. “Hes a little bit of an east-west player,” said Carlyle on Tuesday morning. “The reason were trying to get him away from that is because in todays NHL its a lot about back-side pressure.” “There [are] times where you can go east-west – we understand that – but we just want him to focus on playing north-south as much as possible. Very talented player, can read the ice well, can make plays, has that scoring knack – hes got a lot of things going for him.” 4. Lupul Plays through Pain Joffrey Lupul wasnt about to let Grandma down. Sidelined for two games with a bone bruise (foot), Lupul returned to the lineup against the Oilers, totaling 16 minutes alongside Jay McClement and Carter Ashton. An Edmonton native, Lupul visited with his grandmother on Monday evening. Rather than fly to Mexico for a family wedding she chose to remain in town for an opportunity to watch Lupul play. “That made me feel like I should probably give it my best effort to play tonight,” the 30-year-old said prior to the game. Lupul practiced on Monday afternoon and skated with the team on Tuesday morning, never quite feeling 100 per cent. He lacked explosion and wasnt able to push off the foot comfortably. “Its painful,” he said, “but just as long as you can get in the skate and have the strength and be able to tolerate [the pain], its something youre able to play through without making it too much worse.” 5. Communication Tuesday marked the 12th time in 13 games that the Leafs have yielded 30 shots or more. Edmonton fired 43 shots at Reimer, including 19 in a third frame dominated by the home side. “One of the things that we have to do a better job of is communicating,” said Cody Franson earlier this week. “Last year, I think thats one of the areas that we were much better at is communicating. Id go back for a puck and Id have somebody telling me what was coming, where I could go with it … This year its kind of quiet.” Stat-Pack 7 – Goals for Phil Kessel in the last four games. 4 – Consecutive games with a goal for Kessel. 7 – Points in the last four games for James van Riemsdyk. 12 – Games this season that the Leafs have allowed 30 shots or more. .949 – Save percentage for James Reimer this season, second among qualifying goaltenders. 39 per cent – Leafs on the draw against the Oilers. 18.4 – Shooting percentage for Kessel after 13 games. 43-26 – Shot advantage for the Oilers on Tuesday night. Special Teams Capsule PP: 0-1 PK: 1-1 Quote of the Night “Winning covers all sins. Its hard to criticize a win, but we know in here that we can play better.” – James Reimer on his teams performance this season. He leaves as a potential first overall pick, and one of the most dynamic, breath-taking players in college football history. TAMPA, Fla. — Revis Island is relocating again. Less than a year after moving from the New York Jets to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a blockbuster trade that enabled him to become the highest paid cornerback in the NFL, the three-time All-Pro known for stranding opposing receivers in man coverage is out of work. He was dumped in a cost-cutting move. The Bucs released Revis on Wednesday after efforts to trade him and his $16 million annual salary. “It was a tough decision. Hes a very good player,” general manager Jason Licht said during a news conference introducing four of the five free agents as he and new coach Lovie Smith push forward with plans to overhaul a team that went 4-12 last season. “We were able to get three very good players,” Smith chimed at one point in support of what Licht described as a roadmap for success “for almost for the price of one.” Cutting the 28-year-old Revis saved the Bucs a $1.5 million bonus that the five-time Pro Bowl selection would have been due if he remained on the roster. It also freed additional space under the salary cap, which the team intends to use to try to improve a roster that has several glaring weaknesses. “Were not trying to build slowly,” Smith added. “We were a 4-12 team. Theres a lot we have to do.” Revis was obtained in a pre-draft trade from the New York Jets last spring, a deal orchestrated by former coach Greg Schiano and GM Mark Dominik that cost the Bucs a first-round draft in 2013, as well as a fourth-rounder this year. If Revis had remained on Tampa Bays roster at 4 p.m. Wednesday, he would have been due the bonus and the 2014 pick the Bucs sent to the Jets would have become a third-rounder. Revis was recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee when he joined the Bucs and was given a six-year, $96 million contract. Despite not being 100 per cent physically, he appeared in all 16 games and was selected to play in the Pro Bowl last season, when he had two interceptions, a sack and two forced fumbles. “Darrelle showed a lot of heart last year as he worked extremely hard to get himself back on the field following his knee injury sustained the previous season,” Licht said. “We have specific ideas regarding the best way to build this defence and, wwhile you never like to lose a good player, we believe this is in the best interests of our team moving forward,” the GM added.dddddddddddd “Darrelle was a true professional here in Tampa Bay and we wish him continued success in his career.” The release came less than an hour after the Bucs confirmed free agent quarterback Josh McCown had agreed to terms of a two-year contract, a move that reunites him with Smith. A career backup, the 12th-year pro is coming off the best season of his career with Chicago. McCown started five games in place of the injured Jay Cutler for the Bears in 2013, going 3-2 and finishing the year with 13 touchdown passes vs. one interception. McCown was a third-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2002. He spent the past two seasons with the Bears, including 2012 — Smiths last year in Chicago. McCown, who turns 35 in July, will compete with second-year pro Mike Glennon for the starting job. Glennon started 13 games as a rookie for the Bucs, who fired Schiano and Dominik after missing the playoffs for the sixth straight season. Smith and Licht were hired in January and entered free agency determined to make some bold moves. In addition to signing McCown, the Bucs landed defensive end Michael Johnson, cornerback Alterraun Verner, defensive tackle Clinton McDonald and tight end Brandon Myers on Tuesday, the first day team could complete deals. “Were not simply talent collectors,” Licht said. “Were finding the right fits.” Improving the pass rush is a major priority. Signing Johnson (15 sacks over the past two seasons with Cincinnati) to a five-year, $47.5 million contract, and also nabbing McDonald (5 1-2 sacks in 2013 with Super Bowl champion Seattle) addresses that need. Myers was a productive tight end with Oakland and the New York Giants the past two seasons. Verner received a four-year, $26.5 million deal to fill the void created by the departure of Revis, regarded as one of the top players in the league at his position. The 25-year-old Verner had a career-best five interceptions and made the Pro Bowl last season with the Tennessee Titans. “I wouldnt say Im here to replace Revis,” Verner said. “Im looking to try to be the very best player I can be.” ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / nto the top-right corner of th BOSTON — David Ortiz headed to the plate, ready to hit for the final time in the World Series. St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina stood up, spoke softly to his pal and twice patted him on the side. By that point, even the Cardinals were members of the Big Papi fan club. Ortiz walked off as the MVP after Boston won 6-1 Wednesday night in Game 6, capping a week in which he spurred the Red Sox with a mix of power, patience and a most timely pep talk. “I know Im one of the forces for this ballgame and I like to take things personal,” he said. “And thats been my whole career, a challenge.” “I wasnt trying to be the guy, but I know I got to get something done to keep the line moving,” he said. “I dont even have to do anything today, I guess, the rest of the team took over.” Ortiz drew four walks and three of them were intentional, including the last one in the eighth inning after talking with Molina. Overall, Ortiz piled up totals that not even slow-pitch softball players dream about: He reached base a whopping 19 times in 25 plate appearances. “Hey, let me tell you,” he said. “I was hitting well, but it wasnt like I was hitting pitches right down the middle of the plate. They were trying their best to get me out.” When the game ended, Ortiz hoisted reliever Koji Uehara over his shoulder. He then raised the gleaming gold trophy with one hand, the crowning achievement of his career. Now a three-time champion, Ortiz is the last link to the Red Sox team that swept the Cardinals in 2004 and ended an 86-year title drought. The sellout crowd broke into thunderous chants of “MVP! MVP!” each time Ortiz batted. Quite a turnaround for the 37-year-old slugger who badly slumped in the AL championship series. Ortiz hit 11 for 16 (.688) with two home runs and six RBIs against the Cardinals, and just missed a grand slam when Carlos Beltran robbed him by reaching over the short bullpen wall. Asked to describe Ortiz, manager John Farrell paused. “Well, Id probably rather let his bat do the talking, because its pretty special,” he said. Ortiz also drew eight walks and legged out a few infield hits, helped by St. Louis second baseman Matt Carpenter playing way out in shallow right field. At one point, Ortiz tied a Series record by reaching base in nine straight trips. “Hes as hot as anyone youre going to see this time of year,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. “We tried to make tough pitches in tough situations, tried to pitch around him at times.” Ortizs .760 on-base percentage and batting average were the second-highest in Series history, trailing only Billy Hatchers marks of .800 and .750 in 1990 for Cincinnati. “David has been unbelievable his whole career this time of the year. Its his time of the year. Ive been on the wrong side of it a few times,” winning pitcher John Lackey said. As Ortiz came up in the first inning, Molina and plate umpire Jim Joyce talked about him. “This guys unbelievable,” Molina said on Fox audio. “Hes fun to watch,” Joyce said. Yet for all the impact he made swinging the bat in getting 11 of Bostons 41 hits — or just standing there and watching the Cardinals pitch around him — Ortiz made an equally important contribution with his words. With St. Louis leading the Series 2-1 and the Red Sox scuffling in Game 4, Ortiz called his bearded band together for an impromptu huddle in the dugout. Ortiz said he merely told the guys to relax, stay loose and appreciate the moment. His teammates told a different story after Boston rallied to win. “It was like 24 kindergartners looking up at their teacher. He got everyones attention and we looked him right in the eyes,” said Jonny Gomes, who answered with a winning home run. “That message was pretty powerful.” Thats also what the Red Sox expect from their Dominican-born thumper, known for his neatly tailored suits and dazzling diamond jewelry. Whatever the Red Sox need, and whenever they need it, hes ready. When the Series shifted to St. Louis and there was no designated hitter, he adeptly moved from the DH spot to first base. He did the same thing way back in the 2004 Series, and again in 2007 when the Red Sox swept Colorado. As the Red Sox celebrated on the field after the final out, Ortiz considered what it meant to win a third title. Easy, he answered. “That means Im getting old,” he said. The stunning outcome put Liverpool a point above Manchester City, but City has a game in hand and can win its second title in three years with four points from its last two games. Liverpool was romping to a bonus big win to help its goal difference thanks to a first-half goal by Joe Allen before Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez scored in quick succession in the second to have the Reds leading 3-0 by the 55th minute. Then, Damian Delaney exposed Liverpools vulnerability to counterattacks as he scored in the 79th, launching a dramatic turnaround and deflating the Reds. They didnt recover, as Dwight Gayle cut the deficit to one two minutes later, and drew level with his second goal in the 88th. Suarez, the leagues new player of the year, was in tears on the final whistle and covered his face with his shirt as he left the pitch, with his team now highly unlikely to claim a first title in 24 years. The title race is certain to go to the last day of the season on Sunday, and Citys superior goal difference means a win and a draw from its last two games is almost certain to be enough to clinch the title. City faces Aston Villa on Wednesday, and West Ham United on Sunday, both at home. Liverpool started strongly and seemed to have put the preceding 2-0 defeat to Chelsea behind it when Allen darted to the far post to head in Steven Gerrards corner, his first league goal in over two years.dddddddddddd Leading only 1-0 at the break, Liverpool came out fighting in the second half, forcing Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni to tip a Sturridge shot onto the post in acrobatic style, before Suarez missed an open goal on the rebound. Sturridge doubled Liverpools lead with a deflected shot on 51 minutes, and Suarez combined with Raheem Sterling to make it 3-0 with a calm low finish two minutes later. Chasing a big win to reduce Citys goal-difference advantage, Liverpool continued to pour men forward and was repeatedly caught on the counterattack as Palace scored three goals in the space of nine minutes. Delaneys 25-yard speculative shot veered in off Glen Johnsons leg into the top-right corner of the net, then Gayle scored his first, coolly finishing off a Yannick Bolasie cross. Gayle levelled in the 88th, slotting past goalkeeper Simon Mignolet when Glenn Murray controlled a long pass. Liverpool twice had strong penalty appeals turned down by referee Mark Clattenburg, first when Johnson was floored by Bolasie midway through the first half, then shortly after the break when Suarez argued furiously for a spot kick, but earned himself only a yellow card for doing so. Palaces final home game of the season saw the home crowd leave in buoyant mood following a season in which the London team was expected to battle only against relegation in its first season since returning to the Premier League. Palace can no longer overtake 10th-place Stoke City, and will secure 11th with a point away to relegated Fulham on Sunday. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / . On Thursday the NBA suspen TAMPA, Fla. — Ben Bishop had a milestone game against one of the NHLs greatest goalies. Bishop stopped 23 shots to set Tampa Bays single-season record with 31 victories as the Lightning beat Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Saturday night. “Hes got a few more than me,” Bishop said of Brodeur, who tops the NHLs career wins list with 686. “Its always nice playing against the best in the game, if not the best ever. So, whenever you can get a win against him, you remember those.” Bishop (31-11-6) broke the mark held by Nikolai Khabibulin, which was set in 2002-03. It was Bishops fifth shutout this season. “Youre watching the growth of Ben Bishop,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. “He wants that next start. Hes not shying away from it.” Bishop now has 49 career victories, including eight shutouts, in 97 games. Michael Kostka had a goal and an assist for Tampa Bay, which has won two in a row following a five-game losing streak (0-3-2). B.J Crombeen and Nate Thompson had the other goals for the Lightning. Brodeur made 29 saves for the Devils, who were coming off a 5-3 loss Friday night at Florida. Brodeur had beaten Tampa Bay twice earlier this season, allowing just one goal overall. “Its all about winning,” Brodeur said. “It doesnt matter if I feel good in there. We didnt get the win. On a personal note, I was seeing the puck pretty good.” The Devils are 11th in the Eastern Conference. “We all know whats at stake,” New Jersey coach Peter DeBoer said. “Its a disappointing trip, but the season is not over.” Bishop turned aside four shots by Michael Ryder, including a nice arm save, during the first two periods, and gloved a shot from the top of the left circle by Adam Henrique with 6 1/2 minutes to go in the third. Brodeur made a nifty glove save on Steven Stamkos shot 7 minutes into the second. After J.T. Brown had his penalty shot stopped by Brodeur at 11:19, Crombeen, positioned in the slot, redirected Kostkas shot past the New Jersey goalie for a 1-0 lead 1:07 later. Kostka made it 2-0 when he was left alone just outside the crease and put a back-hander past Brodeur with 3:02 left in the second. Valtteri Filppula assisted on both of the Lightnings second-period goals, and has six assists and seven points during a four-game point streak. Thompson scored at 16:41 of the third. The Devils had a goal by Jon Merrill disallowed at 5:01 of the first because of incidental goalie contact. “From the bench I couldnt tell,” DeBoer said. “When I watched the replay, their guy obviously was the one who interfered with the goalie. So its disappointing that that call wasnt properly made. Its water under the bridge. Weve got to bounce back.” New Jerseys Jaromir Jagr had his five-game point streak — three goals, six points — end. Téma: Jak postupovat / n his last 15 games at C KONIGSSEE, Germany — It was an emotional first win for Canadian Justin Kripps. Kripps, of Summerland. B.C., claimed his first career World Cup bobsleigh race as he and brakeman Bryan Barnett of Edmonton posted a two-run time of one minute 39.71 seconds in a two-man event Saturday. The victory comes after Krippss grandmother passed away Jan. 6, his 27th birthday. “I know Baba was there with me today,” he said. Switzerlands Beat Hefti and Alex Baumann were second, 0.15 seconds back. Canadians Lyndon Rush of Humboldt, Sask., and Calgarys Lascelles Brown were third, 0.32 seconds behind their victorious teammates. With the Sochi Winter Games upcoming, Kripps says anything is possible. “I dont have much experience in Sochi, but this win sure gives me confidence,” he said. Dustin Byfuglien has scored in back-to-back games and also has an assist on this road trip. Forward Eric ODell and defenceman Adam Pardy are the two healthy players with the team and are options for Head Coach Claude Noel. The (30-12-1) Penguins lead the Metropolitan Division with 61 points and have a 15-point advantage over second place Philadelphia and the third-seeded Capitals. Pittsburgh, who is coming off a 5-2 win over the Rangers Friday night, has the best home ice record in the Eastern Conference at 18-3.dddddddddddd Much of that success revolved around Sidney Crosby who has eight goals and 16 assists for 24 points in his last 15 games at Consol Energy Center. Téma: Jak postupovat / -Jersey]Mark Ingram J MIAMI — When his team was off to a shaky 9-8 start, Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra ordered his players to ignore what he called “the noise,” his term for outside perceptions of the club. When Miami was losing five straight games after the all-star break, Spoelstra issued the same edict. And now, with a 2-0 lead over the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals, the same thinking applies. In short, Spoelstra is taking pains to ensure his team doesnt allow itself to get wrapped up in talk of anything beyond Game 3 on Saturday night in Boston. “This is the absolute threat of the human condition,” Spoelstra said Friday before the team flew to Boston. "The bandwagon will sway so flagrantly to each side after each game that its hard to keep track of everything. “And thats where our mental discipline must come in.” Its nothing new for the Heat, who have been lighting rods ever since LeBron James and Chris Bosh arrived last summer to join Dwyane Wade in Miami. Téma: Jak postupovat / hit .333 (8 for 24) with one It was a night where all the teams in the playoff chase in the Western Conference picked up points with the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 shootout win over the Phoenix Coyotes being a three-pointer. With the win, the Jets improve to 10-3-1 under coach Paul Maurice and 5-1 at home since the coaching change. With 21 games remaining, the Jets are now on 64 points and just two out of the final playoff spot. The team plays another divisional game Saturday afternoon in Nashville (You can catch the action live on TSN Jets or listen on TSN 1290.) The Predators sit two points back of the Jets. Thursday marked the Jets 35th one-goal game this season, the second highest in the league. Oliver Ekman-Larsson opened the scoring as he did January 13 when these two teams met at MTS Centre. On that night his goal came at 12:16. In this game it was 12:17 in. In the first meeting, Olli Jokinen tied the game 36 seconds later. Thursday, Blake Wheeler tied it 2:38 later. It was Wheelers team-leading 23rd of the year. Shots in the first were 11-9 for Phoenix. The only goal of the second came on a Jets power play, as Bryan Little beat Mike Smith off of a turnover. It was his 19th of the year and sixth powerplay goal of the season. Little now has 48 points on the season, three shy of his tying his career single season high. The shots in the second were 10-7 for the Jets. Phoenix tied the game on a third period power play following a very weak hooking call on Jim Slater. Both teams had reason to question some of the calls and non-calls in this game. Martin Hanzal buried a rebound for his 15th of the year to send the game to overtime. Shots in the third favoured Phoenix 13-9. The Coyotes were the better team in overtime and only a number of great saves by Ondrej Pavelec took the game to a shootout. The shots in overtime were 5-1 for Phoenix and 39-29 Coyotes in the game.Antoine Vermettes shootout marker for the Coyotes was cancelled out by Devin Setoguchi and Olli Jokinens for Winnipeg as the Jets prevailed. Vermette had his 10-game point streak snapped, while Andrew Ladd had his five-game point streak snapped. Wheeler has points in 13 of his last 17 games. In the two games against Phoenix, Pavelec has stopped 52 of 55 shots, is 2-0 and has a save percentage of .945. Jacob Trouba led the Jets in ice time at 26:39, while Little took a team high 24 face-offs, winning 13. Jim Slater and Evander Kane both returned to the line-up, Slater has been out since mid-October, while Kane missed the last six before the break.“It was a slugfest for the puck, but the game was better than I thought it would be after the layoff,” commented Maurice post-game. “Teams generated good looks, there were good saves. I liked our goaltending and in the end he delivered two points. We were a little uptight after the 2-2 goal. But I dont complain about getting two points. That team (Phoenix) played pretty well.” The coach was also impressed by his goalie, Pavelec. “They had three prime chances in overtime,” said Maurice. “He wins the game with the saves in overtime and the shootout. He really competed.” [url=http://www.authenticpackersteamshop.com/Letroy-… Letroy Guion Jersey[/url] . |

Téma: Jak postupovat / up. Gay and Thomas both score BOSTON — Boston winger Milan Lucic didnt hide the thoughts many of his teammates may have had in the Bruins locker room following a fairly easy win over Carolina. “I just hope were not peaking right now and keep wanting more,” Lucic said after the Eastern Conference-leading Bruins beat the Hurricanes 5-1 on Saturday afternoon for their eighth straight victory. “Weve done a good job of staying focused and keeping on the task at hand,” he said. “It seems like were playing at our highest level of the season so far. It seems to have gotten better since the start of February and Olympic break.” Jarome Iginla scored a pair of goals and backup goaltender Chad Johnson made 29 saves, helping extend the Bruins longest winning streak since a 10-game stretch in November 2011. Lucic had a goal and two assists, Torey Krug and Chris Kelly each scored a goal and David Krejci added three assists, his first coming as he was falling to the ice on Lucics score. Bruins coach Claude Julien wasnt about to say his team is playing its best. “If he thinks were peaking too soon I can show him areas where we can play better,” he said, breaking into a grin. “Were playing well and working hard.” Alexander Semin had the goal and Cam Ward made 36 saves for the Hurricanes, who lost for the eighth time in 11 games. Johnson, playing with regular goalie Tuukka Rask getting the day off, is 8-0-1 in his past nine starts. Bruins defenceman Johnny Boychuk had to be helped off the ice favouring his right leg after going off-balance into the boards midway into the third period. He was back about a minute later and ended up blocking a shot before limping off on his next shift. Boston grabbed a 1-0 lead on Lucics goal 15:28 into the opening period. Krejci was falling after being tripped on what would have been a penalty on Eric Staal, but he pushed the puck ahead to Lucic. The winger then snapped off a quick shot inside the right post into a wide-open area with Ward over near the other post. “Its funny. I was talking to him after the play,” Lucic said, smiling. “He said he was going to shoot it. Its a bit of a lucky play to come back to me. Again, youve gotta be lucky to be good sometimes. Thats what happened there. Thats how it goes sometimes. You can be working hard and playing well and things dont go your way.” Lucic then set up Iginla to make it 2-0 at 17:24 of the second. The Bruins rugged winger outworked defenceman Jay Harrison for the puck in the corner, hustled to it behind the net and sent a pass out front to Iginla, who fired a wrist shot inside the far post over Wards glove. Semin ended Johnsons shutout bid 3:53 into the third when his shot caromed off the stick of Boychuk and bounced into the net. Boston broke it open with two goals later in the period before Krug scored in the final seconds. “Yeah, you know what, theyre a good hockey team, theyre physical,” Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. “It was disappointing for us because weve been playing pretty good hockey recently. Usually, as the game goes on we get stronger and stronger, but I dont think we pushed back well enough tonight after they came out hard in the first. They set the tone and I dont think we really responded — even though the game was a 2-1 game for the most part.” Kellys score made it 3-1 at 12:49 and Iginla scored his team-leading 23rd goal 13 seconds later, firing a wrister past Ward from the slot. Johnson had a key save late in the second after Boston made it 2-0 when he made a right pad stop on Staal at the end of a 2-on-1 break. “I thought we didnt capitalize on opportunities, and that always hurts us obviously early in the game, and then they just kept coming,” Hurricanes forward Nathan Gerbe said. The Reds moved within three games of the second-place Cardinals, who have won seven of their last nine games while staying right behind the division-leading Brewers. SACRAMENTO, Calif. — DeMarcus Cousins found himself in an unusual place Sunday night, sitting on the bench the entire fourth quarter. Sacramentos centre liked the feeling of not being needed in a rare lopsided win by the Kings. Isaiah Thomas scored 26 points to lead the Kings to their third straight win with this seasons biggest rout, a 124-80 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 44-point victory margin was the largest in the NBA this season, according to STATS and the third largest margin in franchise history. The Kings scored 16 straight points in the third quarter and led by 28 points heading into the fourth. The three-game winning streak is Sacramentos first since December 2012. Cousins, an All-Star hopeful, finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots in just under 30 minutes. “It felt weird, sitting out the whole fourth. Unless I fouled out, I dont think Ive ever been in that situation” Cousins said. “It felt good to see some of the guys play a lot of minutes and get out there and have good games. It was a good win all around.” These are rare times indeed for the Kings. The three-game win streak has been no fluke. Sacramento defeated Portland, then followed with a 20-point victory over Orlando and the victory over Cleveland, their highest point total of the season and easily their most impressive victory. The Kings allowed Orlando to score 83 points, a season low until Cleveland only scored 80. “Consistency isnt something weve shown defensively, but the last three games I think the defence has been consistent, the effort has been there, and the communication has been there,” Kings coach Michael Malone said. “We bought in the last three games and protected our home court. Thats great.” C.J. Miles had 14 points and Luol Deng added 12 for the Cavaliers, who had won two straight. Cleveland went just over five minutes without a basket in the third quarter, when it shot 4 of 20 and was outscored 30-11. The Cavaliers were outscored 65-30 in the second half. Kyrie Irving, the Cavaliers leading scorer, missed 11 of 14 shots, 3 of 4 free throws, and finished with seven points. “It was just one of those nights. The shots were not falling,” Irving said. “Like coach said, we just have to bring it in more and be more together during the hard times. Especially when I am having a bad shooting night. Thats part of the game. We just have to continue to compete, including myself.” It was Dengs second game since arriving from Chicago in a trade for Andrew Bynum and three draft picks. Deng, who has beenn bothered by a sore left Achilles, had 10 points in 21 minutes in his Cavaliers debut, a victory Friday night in Utah.dddddddddddd “In the first half we were able to get whatever we wanted,” Deng said. “In the second half, we should have recognized what was going on and focused on our defence a lot more. They did switch their game plan and started playing D and thats what we should have done.” Rudy Gay scored 20 points for the Kings, who concluded a five-game home stand with a 3-2 record. Both Derrick Williams and Jimmer Fredette scored 13 points. The Kings made 15 of 30 3-pointers, shot 52 per cent, and outrebounded the Cavaliers 50-32. The Kings also had eight blocks, including three by Gay. “They shot the mess out the basketball. I give them and Mike Malone credit,” Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. “From top to bottom, they kicked my behind and everybody else in a Cleveland Cavalier uniform. It wasnt just Rudy Gay and Isaiah Thomas. It was the whole … team.” Thomas made consecutive 3s and Ben McLemore and Williams each had another in a span of two minutes, giving the Kings a 106-68 lead with 8:55 left in the fourth quarter. The lead reached a high of 46 points in the fourth quarter. “This is very fun. Winning cures a lot of things,” Thomas said. "Were playing hard right now. Gay and Thomas both scored nine points in the third quarter when the Kings hit 12 of 13 free throws, outrebounded Cleveland 16-7 and took an 89-61 lead. Leading by nine points at the half, the Kings expanded their lead in the third quarter. They ran off 16 unanswered points in building an 86-58 lead. Cousins and Gay started the run with consecutive three-point plays and Thomas ended the spree with a layup. Gay and Thomas both scored 11 first-half points for the Kings, who led 59-50. Sacramento outscored the Cavaliers 29-18 in the second quarter. Miles had 11 points and Anderson Varejao 10 for Cleveland. It was a difficult opening half for Irving. The talented Cavaliers point guard shot 1 of 7, missed both free throws, and had two points in 19 minutes. NOTES: Miles made a contested 40-footer to end the first quarter. The 3-pointer gave Cleveland a 32-30 lead. … Thomas hit a 3 in the fourth quarter and has now made a 3-pointer in 29 consecutive games. … The Kings have played 22 of their first 35 games at home. They start a six-game road trip Tuesday in Indiana. … Fredette missed his first free throw this season after connecting on his first 12. Kane, Tim Stapleton and Dustin Byfuglien each had a goal and an assist as the Jets ended a five-game skid with a 5-2 victory over the Lightning on Monday night. “It was the most complete game weve played,” said Kane. “We need to be able to model that and be consistent with that type of game.” Andrew Ladd and Mark Flood also scored for the Jets, who went 1-2 on the power play and upped their record to 6-9-3. Martin St. Louis and Steve Stamkos replied for Tampa Bay (8-7-2), which couldnt convert on six power-play chances. “We felt it was a good opportunity for us at home against a tough team to really get back on track and play the game that we need to play,” Ladd said. “I thought for the most part we did that tonight.” Jets netminder Ondrej Pavelec made 30 saves as Winnipeg registered only its third win at home this season. “It was a game we needed,” Pavelec said. "Our biggest problem is being able to stay out of the (penalty) box. “But we did a great job tonight. We know that if we just stick with the plan and if were going to play all 60 minutes … we can beat everybody and thats what we showed tonight.” Winnipeg outshot Tampa 39-32. Dwayne Roloson started in net for the Lightning, but was replaced by Mathieu Garon midway through the second period after giving up his fourth goal on 22 shots. Tampa head coach Guy Boucher didnt blame bad luck for his teams lack of scoring with the man advantage. “I dont believe in luck. You make your luck,” Boucher said. “We hit the post. You shoot two inches inside and thats not a post, its accuracy. And I think (Pavelec) made some major key saves on our power play.” In the second of six games between the clubs this season — Tampa won the first — Winnipeg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Kane and Byfuglien. Winnipeg outshot Tampa 16-11 in the period, while the Lightning had the periods only two power plays and couldnt beat Pavelec. Winnipeg killed off a four-minute Lightning power play early in the second period while defenceman Zach Bogosian was in the box for holding and unsportsmanlike conduct. The Jets went into the game ranked 22nd in the league in penalty killing and 20th with the man advantage. Téma: Jak postupovat / .MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee B MINNEAPOLIS — Jason Vargas threw seven scoreless innings, Raul Ibanez homered in his second game for Kansas City and the Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 4-0 Wednesday. Vargas (8-3) allowed four singles and two walks while striking out five, allowing only two runners from a diluted Twins lineup to reach second base. Mike Moustakas and Jarrod Dyson hit RBI singles in the second inning against Kevin Correia (4-10), and that was all Vargas needed. With Joe Mauer missing, placed on the disabled list before the game because of a strained muscle on his right side, the Twins didnt cause Vargas any trouble. They were shut out for the sixth time this season and lost for the seventh time in their last nine games. The 42-year-old Ibanez signed Monday with the Royals, the team that first gave him a regular spot in the lineup all the way back in 2001. He had two hits and two runs in this game, including the solo shot to right field in the eighth. Ibanez was released by the Los Angeles Angels last month. Eric Hosmer, who walked three times, added an RBI single in the ninth inning for insurance. With rookie Yordano Ventura and now Danny Duffy joining the veteran trio of Vargas, James Shields and Jeremy Guthrie, who are all in the top 10 in the league in innings pitched, the Royals have a deep rotation that can keep them in the post-season chase all summer. Vargas improved to 4-1 in his last eight starts, seven of which have counted as quality: six innings or more and three runs or less. Vargas also became the first Royals left-hander to win eight games or more before the All-Star break since Chris George in 2003. Correia lowered his ERA to 4.95, the only time hes had that mark under 5.00 since his first start of the year, after surrendering six hits and two walks in six innings while striking out three. The right-hander completed exactly six innings for the fifth consecutive turn, and he has allowed two runs or fewer in four of those starts. But the second inning was the one that hurt, when five batters reached. He struck out Billy Butler to finish the frame with the bases loaded. NOTES: The Royals swapped RH relievers Wednesday, calling up Casey Coleman from Triple-A Omaha and sending down rookie Michael Mariot, who gave up five runs Tuesday in his second appearance in as many days. … Chris Parmelee played 1B and batted third for Mauer. He had two hits and stretched his hitting streak to a career-long 12 straight games. … One of the runners to reach second base for the Twins was Sam Fuld, who was originally ruled out on a steal attempt to end the fifth inning. Manager Ron Gardenhire challenged the call, which was overturned. Gardenhire is 9 for 19 on challenges this season. … With a rest day for Royals CF Lorenzo Cain, SS Alcides Escobar batted leadoff for the first time this season.
