Téma: Jak postupovat / nued to alternate wins and l ATLANTA — Jeff Teague was in no mood to talk after the Atlanta Hawks missed a chance to win their third straight game. “There was a letdown,” he said. “We lost. We shouldve taken care of business.” Rodney Stuckey scored 29 points, Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond each had a double-double and the Detroit Pistons snapped a 10-game skid in Atlanta with a 102-95 victory over the Hawks on Tuesday night. Atlanta has five games left in the regular season and a 1 1/2-game advantage over New York for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Paul Millsap had 24 points and 12 rebounds for the Hawks. Monroe finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds and Drummond had 19 points and 17 rebounds for the Pistons, who were eliminated from playoff contention when the Hawks won Sunday at Indiana. Detroit has won two straight after dropping five of six. Drummond has 53 double-doubles, most in the Eastern Conference this season. Monroe has 34. Atlanta trailed by three when Drummond blocked Millsaps jumper in the lane and tipped in Kyle Singlers missed fast-break layup to put the Pistons up 96-91 with 1:36 remaining. “Theyre just big on the inside,” said Teague, who finished with 15 points and nine assists. “Theyre athletes, and its going to be tough to get layups. Weve just got to make our shots. We had some open looks.” The Pistons were up by 13 twice in the second quarter, the latter coming on Peyton Sivas 3-pointer at the 8:47 mark, but Atlanta cut the lead to four on Kyle Korvers 3 in the final minute of the period. Detroit played without leading scorer Josh Smith, who was sidelined by patella tendinitis in his left knee. Stuckey replaced the former Atlanta star in the starting lineup and had 15 points in the first half. Korver overcame a turnover midway through the third by hitting a 3 on Atlantas ensuing possession to force a 67-all tie. The Hawks took their first lead of the game on their next possession as DeMarre Carroll took on outlet pass from Teague and hit a fast-break layup at the 6:24 mark. But after three more lead changes, Detroit began the fourth ahead 81-78 and never trailed again as the Hawks failed to keep Monroe and Drummond from dominating in the paint. The Pistons outscored Atlanta 26-9 in second-chance points. “We just kept playing,” Monroe said. “I just think we did what we needed to come back and take control of the game. Teams are always going make runs in this league. We took our hit and we came back.” Atlanta gets another chance to pad its lead over New York on Wednesday when Boston visits Philips Arena. The Knicks next game is Friday at Toronto. “We were hoping to build off the (Indiana) game when we came out very focused and on fire with attention to detail,” Korver said. “Tonight, especially on the defensive end, we werent very sharp. They had 35 in the first quarter.” NOTES: The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 29, but was postponed because of a snowstorm. … Smith missed his first game since signing a four-year, $54 million contract as a free agent. AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — The Grizzlies needed one half to figure out the Pistons. Once Memphis realized that Detroit couldnt hit a jumper, the Grizzlies packed the paint on defence and outscored the Pistons by 33 points in the second half on the way to a 112-84 victory. Zach Randolph finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds for Memphis. “We were struggling against their post players in the first half, so we made an adjustment and really tried to take away the paint,” Grizzlies coach David Joerger said. “They were playing zone against us, but Zach was able to get inside and disrupt things, and that opened up some kick-out shots to our 3-point shooters.” Detroit lost its fourth straight and fifth in a row at home. The Pistons are now 4-10 after a 10-10 start. “This is most definitely an emergency right now,” Brandon Jennings said. “It is slipping away from us. You start questioning if everyone is willing to sacrifice and do the things that we need to win games.” Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks met with his players after the game to try to find a solution. “Im trying to get some insight from them, and well talk more tomorrow,” he said. “When things happen like this, and we dont have any ball movement, thats on me. I have to find a way to do that.” Detroit missed 16 of 20 second-half jump shots, managing just 28 points after a 56-point first half. Jennings went 0-for-7 in the half. “Right now, for some reason, were just a first-half team,” Jennings said. “We arent coming out with the same energy in the second half, and weve got to find out why. This is ridiculous right now.” Memphis got a big game off the bench from second-year player Jon Leuer, who had 23 points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes. “Jon did a great job last year of honing his game all through the season — he was still working hard in March and April when a lot of players have hit the rookie wall,”t; Joerger said.dddddddddddd “This year, hes taken things another step, and you can see where it has paid off. Hes got the shot fake that can set up a drive, and hes doing more things off the pick-and-roll.” Memphis had six players in double figures, including 15 from former Piston Tayshaun Prince. Prince acknowledged that he gets a boost from returning to the building where he won the 2004 championship. “Its always special,” he said. “You always have some incentive to hopefully go out there and get a team win. This team does a great job that when someone is facing their former team, everyone steps up to help them.” Greg Monroe led Detroit with 19 points, while Andre Drummond added 15 points and 14 rebounds. But they combined for only eight points in the second half. “It definitely hurt playing like that in the second half,” Drummond said. “To let them come out and do that — thats definitely tough to swallow.” The Grizzlies continued to alternate wins and losses, going 3-2 in their last five without back-to-back victories or defeats. Both teams were short-handed in the backcourt. Detroits Rodney Stuckey (shoulder) missed his second straight game, while Tony Allen (hand) was added to a lengthy Memphis injury list. NOTES: The game was played in front of a very small crowd, with a winter storm dumping up to a foot of snow in the Detroit area. The Pistons played a special video on the scoreboard during the third quarter, thanking the fans for coming out on such a nasty day. … Prince received an ovation during pregame introductions. Téma: Jak postupovat / y scratch for the second straight CALGARY — Pittsburgh was held to two goals on Saturday night but, against a struggling Calgary offence that set a record for being shutout at home, it was enough. Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves to backstop the Penguins to a 2-1 victory over the Flames, handing Calgary its team record sixth consecutive home regulation loss. “It was just nice today, to have a close, low scoring game,” said Fleury, who improved to 26-10-1. “It felt nice. The last few games were a little crazy so its definitely nice and it was a good battle.” It looked for the longest time like Fleury was going to become the sixth goaltender in the last eight games to shut out the Flames before Mikael Backlund cut into a 2-0 deficit with a goal with 8:31 left in the third period. “Its a relief. Its hard when you chase and chase and you get scoring chances and the puck doesnt go in,” Backlund said. “It gets in your head a little bit. It shouldnt but its natural. But as soon as you score one, everybody settles down a little bit and you feel better.” Ending a goalless stretch at the Scotiabank Saddledome at a team record 196 minutes 59 seconds, Backlund outbattled Kris Letang for the puck and scored on a wicked slapshot from 40 feet out. “Obviously it was nice to get a goal since we havent had too many at home here, lately, but were very disappointed that we didnt win the game,” Backlund said. Chris Kunitz and Matt Niskanen scored for Pittsburgh (33-12-2). The Penguins pick up five-of-six points on its three-game road trip that included a win in Vancouver and an overtime loss in Edmonton on Friday. “The Western Canada swing, its always a hype-up for these games,” said Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma. “With Sidney in the building, it seems like we get the best from other teams.” Calgary (15-24-6) is next in action Monday in Carolina as they begin a short two-game road trip that sees them also play Tuesday in Nashville. “On the mental side, its good but its another loss,” said Flames coach Bob Hartley, relieved that his team scored but not pleased with the end result. “But I cant fault the effort. Tonight was by far one of our best games lately.” After the Backlund goal, with the roaring sell-out crowd of 19,289 suddenly back in the game and momentum seemingly on their side, Calgary could not get the tying goal as Pittsburgh didnt give the Flames much to work with. That was different than how Fridays loss played out in Edmonton when the Penguins blew a third-period lead and lost in overtime. “After a disappointing third period for us last night, for us it was a much better team game,” said Niskanen. “We got the 2-0 lead, same situation we were in last night and thats something we want to get better at, playing with the lead.” Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead at 16:34 of the first period on a laser of a shot from Kunitz that beat Reto Berra over his shoulder and just under the cross bar. The Penguins made it 2-0 at 6:42 of the second when Niskanens shot through a crowd in front squeaked through the pads of Berra. The Flames 27-year-old goaltender had 24 saves including two stellar stops against Sidney Crosby less than 30 seconds apart in the first period. With the game scoreless, first Crosby broke in from off the left wing but had his snap shot smothered. Later that shift, Kunitzs pass sprung Crosby on a breakaway from the blue-line but again Berra showed good reflexes in stopping the close wrist shot. Crosby also hit a goal post in seeing his seven-game points streak snapped. Down 2-0 seven minutes into the third period, the Flames had a chance to try to get the game back to even when they got a five-minute power play after Pittsburgh defenceman Robert Bortuzzo was given a match penalty for head contact for a heavy hit along the side boards on Calgary captain Mark Giordano. But the Flames could not click on the major, which was cut short when Mike Cammalleri took a cross-checking penalty during it. Calgary is now 1 for 26 with the man advantage in the last eight games. “If we could have scored a couple power-play goals, we could have won the game. That was the difference,” Backlund said. “We had a few power-play opportunities and we didnt score and its been like that for a while and its been costing us some games.” Notes: The old mark for Calgarys regulation losses at home was five, which happened in March 2000 … Calgary has scored just 12 goals in Berras last 11 starts. … Backlunds goal ended the Flames overall shutout streak at 174:59, short of the team record of 182:42 set in November 2002 … Calgary RW David Jones (eye) missed his fourth game … C Joe Vitale (upper body) did not play for Pittsburgh … Pittsburgh lost centre Brian Gibbons to a lower-body injury in the first period … Pittsburgh has won seven games in a row against the Flames including the last four at the Scotiabank Saddledome … The Penguins improved to 10-2-1 against the West. Calgary is 7-8-4 against the East. What is the latest news coming out of Buffalo regarding the Sabres General Manager hunt? Bob McKenzie: The Buffalo Sabres have asked for permission from the Boston Bruins to talk to assistant manager Jim Benning about the vacant Sabres GM job and the permission has been granted. Im also hearing that Lafontaines profile for the job is that hes looking for young assistant GM types throughout the NHL. Weve heard Jason Botterills name in Pittsburgh, Brad Trelivings name in Phoenix, Paul Fentons name in Nashville. That might mean a guy like Rick Dudley, whos been a GM in the NHL before doesnt necessarily fit the profile of what Buffalo is currently looking for. With American Thanksgiving nearing, are you hearing any talk on the trade front? Darren Dreger: We are hearing some interesting names that are starting to surface. Two of them that come to mind are Brayden Schenn of the Phildadelphia Flyers and Michael Del Zotto of the New York Rangers. Now the Flyers arent trying to push out Schenn – they may want to push out his brother Luke – but what theyve told teams quietly is that if there is the right deal available, if they can find the right fit, then absolutely they would include Brayden Schenn in a trade scenario. And we know Paul Holmgren likes to make that big blockbuster deal. As for Del Zotto and the Rangers, hes not having a good year, playing well behind Ryan McDonagh and Marc Staal on the left side, so hes a third-pairing defenceman. He could probably embrace a change and were told that at least five or six teams have inquired about scenarios. Pierre LeBrun: I think one of those teams is the Ottawa Senators. Theyve had this mystifying start, theyve been so inconsistent and Im told one of their top priorities on the trade market between noow and the trade deadline is to find another puck-moving defenceman and Del Zotto is on that list of players on their radar.dddddddddddd But its money in, money out with the Senators with the situation with ownership. A quick update on Pekka Rinne. LeBrun: Hes going to have an MRI on his hip again next week and thats a big one for Nashville. If it comes back clear, they hang on and wait for him to come back. If it isnt, it certainly heats up trade talks for Nashville. There are five junior-eligible players in the NHL. We dont think Nathan MacKinnon will be offered to Team Canada for the World Juniors, what about the other four? McKenzie: Sean Monahan of the Calgary Flames looks like an extreme longshot but the Flames arent necessarily closing the door on that – theyll make a decision on that closer to the time it needs to be made in mid to late December. As far as Matt Dumba goes with the Minnesota Wild, I think hes the guy thats most likely to be loaned to Team Canada, but again Minnesota wont make that decision until they check their injury situation. Right now Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly looks like an extreme longshot and Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals, even though hes playing fourth line minutes there for Adam Oates, the Capitals seem to feel that putting him on a big ice international tournament would probably interrupt his pro apprenticeship and probably not be in his best interest. Hes highly unlikely so not a lot of help on the NHL front on the horizon; Dumba seems like the most likely candidate. LeBrun: And sticking with international hockey, the Russians caused a little bit of a kerfuffle over the past week by saying “What about this Olympic roster deadline on December 31st? Wed like to name a partial roster and name the rest of the roster before the Olympics.” The NHL, NHLPA, and IIHF said, “No, nothing has changed on that front, its a hard deadline for the full roster.” Except that the IIHF council meets next week and the Russians are expected to press their case once again there. ’ ’ ’ |

Bala: I would say no. They have two things going against them. Firstly, the Spurs have been playing some incredible basketball that has been about as textbook as you can imagine. The teamwork and the defence plus some all-world play both by Kawhi Leonard and Boris Diaw, on the road no less, has been unstoppable. Secondly, Game 5 is in San Antonio and since the already rabid Spurs fans will be sniffing the title now, making the environment something akin to the lion food in the Roman Coliseum. And did I mention that history is not with them either? Strickland: Chance? Yes. Multiple chances, as a matter of fact: Slim and none. As great as the narrative could establish itself to be if Miami miraculously came back to make this a competitive and epic Finals, there is nothing exhibited in these first four games that would indicate that the Heat have the valentine or testicular fortitude to climb that mountain now. Watson: None. The Spurs can smell blood and they dismantled the Heat in Games 3 and 4. Coach Gregg Popovich has his team far too disciplined to rest on their laurels on home court. The Spurs will take the Larry OBrien Trophy in five games, as Miami has no sense of urgency and cant find scoring outside of the Big Three or defend anyone and that goes for all 13 members of the Miami roster. What do you look at as the biggest key to the Spurs success in the Finals? Bala: The biggest key to the Spurs success is their depth of experience. Sure Leonard, Green and Diaw have been playing out of their minds and the Big Three of Parker, Duncan and Ginobili had been solid. But its the experience among all of them, as well as others, that have kept the edge on the Heat. The panic button never seems to get pushed when things start to go awry and even after the Game 2 loss at home, they came back to pummel the Heat on their court twice, running their system and playing their game. Key word in the last sentence being THEIR. That kind of poise in a championship final only comes with experience and I think we are being shown that it will beat out youthful athleticism. Strickland: Remembering how to forget. Coach Popovich brought his charges into training camp before the season, slowly and painfully breaking down how the Spurs let one get away last year, then put it away forever. Pops understanding of how to manage his team throughout the regular season, limiting their minutes in preparation for this moment was genius. But his adjustment of inserting the multi-dimensional point forward Boris Diaw into the starting lineup for Game 3 was so masterful that San Antonio may be counting one for the thumb and never see another Game 6 in these playoffs. Watson: When a team is doing everything right, its hard to pick just one thing. They are moving the ball exceptionally well, in addition to shooting at a high field-goal percentage, but their defence is what is giving the Heat fits. Not just contesting shots, activity in passing lanes or stealing the ball, but second-man rotation has been solid by the Spurs and, as their hallmark, its any player on the floor wearing black and silver, not just the starters. Is Kawhi Leonard a similar player if drafted by any other team in the NBA? Bala: I dont think so. Leonard, in his role now with the Spurs, is in the ideal place. He would be asked to do more of one thing or another with any other team, or less, and that could likely lead to a drop-off in something else. Right now, hes the do-everything athletic guy on a Spurs team that, though, has athletes, doesnt have one like him. Teams in the NBA all have a vet guy, or three, like Kawhi and that would compete with him growing as a player. There is no way that he would be the same player anywhere else for what hes shown us in the Finals. Strickland: No. Being able to come into a team aand system that mirrors his character, personality and demeanour to a tee with veteran leaders and a winning culture that wouldnt depend on him to be the face of the franchise right away was ideal for him.dddddddddddd. The Spurs R.C. Buford knew what he was doing and exactly what he was getting when he traded George Hill to the Pacers for Kawhi Leonard.Watson: Of course not. Hes still a talented and gifted player, but he was drafted by a team that didnt need him to come in right away and score or be a lockdown defender. He is coached by the best in the game and has learned and watched from Hall of Fame players and how to conduct himself as a professional. Does the result of the NBA Finals affect the Heats off-season free agency moves? Bala: Either way you cut it, its a yes. With all but two players guaranteed to be on the roster, this should play a huge role now. Assuming that the Three Amigos take their player options, for one of the two years at least, the Heat will need to find the pieces to build around them within a workable budget for necessary complementary talent. If any of them opts for free agency, the team will have to replace that player AND just about everyone else too. That will be a huge problem because the calibre of player and chemistry will be tough to find. Lose or, if you believe in miracles, win, Miami has a long summer ahead of it. Strickland: Absolutely. The roster is aging in dog years, especially with one of their stars whose name rhymes with “Wwyane Dade.” The Heat need to address getting younger players who fit their culture and can contribute right away. Pat Riley will also have to look at shoring up problem areas at the point guard (Kyle Lowry?) and down low with solid bigs who can help drag Miami out of the NBAs basement in rebounding, score a bit and be a defensive presence in the paint. Carmelo Anthony is not the answer to the Heats needs right now. Watson: Not really, although the Finals have shown them that they are in worse shape than they previously thought. If Dwyane Wade is going to retire as a Heat player, the team needs more support. This season alone proves they cant coast through and expect to compete in the Finals. Miami has played a lot of games over the last three years and its apparent they are tired and too top-heavy. They can take a note from the Spurs or two regarding balance. Four games deep, who is the Finals MVP? Bala: My pick is Boris Diaw. I cant believe I just said that. I, like Im sure many have before me, have ragged on him at some point in his career, but hes looking like the championship-era Bulls Scottie Pippen right now. Hes been a catalyst on both ends of the floor and its been his ability to not just make plays, but timely ones has been a sparkplug for the Spurs and a dagger for the Heat. I know Leonard had some big performances, as did Parker, but without Diaw the Spurs could be looking at 2-2 or even 3-1. Strickland: Can an entire team and organization be named MVP? No? Okay. Well, I currently have co-MVPs in Boris Diaw and Kawhi Leonard. French Pastrys insertion into the starting lineup shifted the Spurs offence into high gear, especially Kawhi Leonard. Leonards stat lines in Games 3 and 4 are shinier and MVP-calibre, but Diaw as a catalyst facilitating so many good things on the offence cant be overlooked. For a guy who once was the MVP of a foreign hoops league while averaging 7 PPG says a lot about how Boris Diaws impact on this series. Watson: Kawhi Leonard, despite Tim Duncans consistency. Leonard has shot .590 from the field averaging 16.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, while defending the best player on the planet in LeBron James. He has also forced to make James and the rest of the Heat work on the defensive end and is poised to be holding the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP Award. Leonard has taken the next step in his career and no better time than the NBA Finals. The Three-Man Weave contributors are co-hosts of TSN Radio 1050s 1-on-1 with Will and Duane, Will Strickland ( |

Rankings were weighted evenly between separate lists made by TSN Radio host and soccer analyst Gareth Wheeler as well as TSN.cas soccer editors. 1. Manchester City (Last Week-2) Edin Dzeko and Yaya Toure put Manchester City back in control of the Premier League title race with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace. If City wins out and keeps their goal differential advantage they will be crowned champions. 2. Liverpool (LW-1) The league leaders surrendered their advantage in the title race by falling 2-0 to Chelsea at Anfield. They still top the table with a two point advantage over Chelsea and three over Manchester City who have a game in hand. 3. Chelsea (LW-3) Another wrench was thrown into the title race as Demba Ba and Willian led Chelsea to a 2-0 victory over Liverpool. The win kept Chelsea alive in the battle for the top of the table but they will still need help to lift the trophy. 4. Arsenal (LW-4) Laurent Koscielny, Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud all found the net for Arsenal as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Newcastle. The victory helps the Gunners get another step closer to next seasons Champions League competition. 5. Everton (LW-5) Antolin Alcaraz and Seamus Coleman scored into the wrong net as Everton watched Southampton cruise to a 2-0 victory. The loss puts Evertons chances at qualifying for Champions League in serious doubt. 6. Tottenham (LW-6) Danny Rose scored in the 33rd minute to lead Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Stoke City as they continue to hold on to the final place in Europa League. 7. Manchester United (LW-7) Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata both hit doubles as the Ryan Giggs era at Manchester United got off to a winning start with a 4-0 victory over Norwich City. 8. Southampton (LW-8) Southampton will have a top half of the season finish after they essentially stole three points from Everton. Both goals were crredit as own goals.dddddddddddd 9. Stoke City (LW-9) Stoke dropped their third home game of the season as they fell 1-0 to Tottenham. 10. Newcastle United (LW-11) Six straight losses for Newcastle as they were defeated 3-0 by Arsenal. The loss heaps further pressure on manager Alan Pardew. 14. West Bromwich Albion (LW-16) Saido Berahino scored the only goal of the game in the 11th minute to lead West Bromwich Albion to a 1-0 victory over West Ham United. 15. West Ham United (LW-14) West Ham was kept off the score sheet as they dropped their fourth straight game, 1-0 to West Bromwich Albion. 16. Sunderland (LW-17) A rampant victory by Sunderland, 4-0 over Cardiff City, has helped them escape the relegation zone. Connor Wickham opened the scoring and picked up a second to close the game off for the Black Cats. 17. Aston Villa (LW-15) Gabriel Agbonlahors 22nd marker was not nearly enough as Aston Villa fell 4-1 at the hands of Swansea City. 18. Fulham (LW-19) After scoring two goals in three minutes through Ashkan Dejagah and Fernando Amorebieta, Fulham conceded a pair and had to settle for a 2-2 draw. The Cottagers are very involved in the relagation fight. 19. Cardiff City (LW-18) A 4-0 loss to Sunderland has sent Cardiff City to the bottom of the table. Téma: Jak postupovat / otline" (1-800-710-CCES) has bee MONTECAMPIONE, Italy — Fabio Aru of Italy claimed a solo victory on the tough uphill finish to Montecampione in the 15th stage of the Giro dItalia on Saturday for his first Grand Tour victory. Aru made his move with 2.5 kilometres (1.55 miles) remaining and finished 21 seconds ahead of Fabio Duarte. Nairo Quintana edged out Pierre Rolland for third place, 22 seconds behind. The 23-year-old Aru also cut into Rigoberto Urans overall lead and is now fourth — 2 minutes, 24 seconds behind the Colombian. Uran extended his advantage over his closest challengers and is 1:03 ahead of Cadel Evans and 1:50 ahead of Rafal Majka. Victorias Ryder Hesjedal was ninth in Sundays leg, 1:13 behind Aru. Svein Tuft of Langley, B.C., was 138th. Hesjedal, the winner of the 2012 Giro, is 11th overall, 6:44 behind Uran. Tuft is 166th. The previous two times a Giro stage has finished up Montecampione, the winner has gone on to claim the race. It was another stage dedicated to the late Marco Pantani, who had a memorable victory up to Montecampione on his way to winning the 1998 Giro. Pantani also went on to win the Tour de France that year. He was found dead in a hotel room on Valentines Day in 2004, and a coroner ruled he died from cocaine poisoning. The stage was mainly flat along the 225-kilometre (140-mile) route from Valdengo before the final long and steep climb. The break of the day was formed of 12 riders and it had 10 minutes with 78 kilometres (48.5 miles) remaining, before the peloton — driven by Nero Sottoli — started to reel them in. The escapees had an advantage of 2:24 at the base of the climb, where Australian Adam Hansen was the first to make a move. He was joined first by Andre Cardoso and then Fabio Felline and Rodolfo Torres, as Julian Arredondo attacked from the peloton. They had less than a minute lead with 14.5 kilometres (9 miles) remaining. Arredondo took over the lead with Cardoso but the duo were caught and immediately passed by Philip Deignan, who had a 20-second advantage with 5 kilometres (3 miles) remaining. Rolland attacked and caught up with Deignan and the pair had an advantage of 36 seconds before Aru made his move, bringing Uran with him. Quintana and Duarte also attacked and the quartet caught the leading duo. Aru then attacked again, chased by Duarte, Quintana and Rolland as Uran dropped off, after deciding he couldnt keep up with the pace. Monday sees the third and final rest day of this years Giro before arguably its toughest stage, with the iconic climbs up the Stelvio and Gabbia — weather permitting. In an effort to catch cheaters, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport launched an anonymous snitch line Tuesday where athletes and others connected to sport can report allegations of doping. The announcement comes on the heels of last weeks revelations by Victoria cyclist Ryder Hesjedal, who admitted to doping more than a decade ago. Canadians want to be reassured that every effort is being made to prevent an embarrassing spectacle in Sochi, centre president and CEO Paul Melia told a news conference in Ottawa. Melia cited the bitter memory of the moment Jamaican-born sprinter Ben Johnson was stripped of his Olympic gold medal after being disqualified for doping at the 1988 Summer Games. “No one wants to see a Canadian athlete receive a medal on Friday only to see it taken away on Saturday,” he said. “We lived that once. We dont want to live it again.” To aid in the anti-doping effort, the federal government and the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic committees are contributing a combined $1 million toward the fight against illegal performance enhancements. The money will help boost testing of athletes in the four months prior to the Sochi Olympics, say organizers. It will also strengthen the investigative capacity oof Canadas anti-doping program, said Bal Gosal, Canadas minister of state for sport.dddddddddddd The announcement also comes in advance of an international anti-doping conference being held next week in South Africa, where a new code of standards is expected to be adopted by sports organizations and government around the world. A “Report Doping Hotline” (1-800-710-CCES) has been set up to encourage anyone with knowledge of doping in amateur sport to come forward. Its just one more step toward more fairness in sports, says Canadian Olympic Committee president Marcel Aubut, who acknowledged Tuesday that his committee has done little until now to address the problem. “Fairness, clean play and integrity need to become prerequisites in international Competition,” he said. “Competing against the worlds best in an equitable manner is what sport is all about.” Its the first time the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport and the Canadian Olympic Committee have formally collaborated to tackle an issue. Aubut said only became concerned about high-profile doping cases when he saw media coverage about it while waiting for a plane back home after travelling to Sochi in advance of the Games. Thats when he came to the realization that Canada is vulnerable to a doping scandal of its own, said Aubut. “I read about this, and it shocked me,” he said. ’ ’ ’ |

Max Pacioretty scored two goals with the help of linemates David Desharnais and Daniel Briere in Montreals 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Monday in NHL pre-season action. Pacioretty, who has scored in three straight contests, is confident him and his new linemates are destined for success. “Were getting better every day,” said Pacioretty. "Were talking a lot, were working hard, and I felt very comfortable tonight. “Were moving the puck real well out there. It feels like we know where each other are and well only get better from there.” The goals, scored on the back of Paciorettys seven shots, were his third and fourth of the pre-season. Montreal head coach Michel Therrien was equally impressed by the play of Pacioretty, Desharnais, and Briere. “We can see theres some chemistry staring to build,” said Therrien. "And thats a good thing. Thats the reason why we try to put those guys together as much as we can. “Pacioretty is such a powerful forward. He skates so hard. Hes got great speed. Hes in great shape, hes powerful, and its demanding to play against him when hes using his speed like that.” Despite Paciorettys two goals, and the overall strength of the line, it was Ryyan Whites late third-period goal, a deflection off rookie Jarred Tinordis shot that slipped past goaltender Martin Brodeur, that won the game for the Canadiens.dddddddddddd Carey Price stopped 19 shots for the win while Brodeur made 22 saves in defeat. “With the line-up we had, so many young guys, not regulars, compared to Montreal that had their full team, almost, I think we competed real well,” said Brodeur. “Its not easy for some of the young guys coming in to a building like that, a full house, to handle themselves. But I thought we did a great job.” The Canadiens opened the scoring early in the second period when Pacioretty beat Brodeur glove-side on the power play. Ex-Hab Michael Ryder, who signed with the Devils in July, tied the game minutes later with a high floater from the blue-line that bounced off Price and landed in the net. Pacioretty restored Montreals one-goal lead at 8:32 when he beat Brodeur with a powerful backhander while playing 5-on-4 hockey. Adam Larsson tied the game 2-2 on a deflected shot from the point at 16:47 of the second before White scored the winner at 16:08 of the third. The Canadiens close out their pre-season play with a home-and-home series against the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday and Thursday. Téma: Jak postupovat / t match up with the talen Not only was Bruno Caboclo a relative unknown to many NBA insiders, but according to Dwane Casey, the 18-year-old Brazilian was a player only a handful of teams knew anything about. The Raptors head coach joined TSN 1050 to shed some light on the teams surprise selection and defend the criticism of the pick by ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla who described Caboclo as being a player that was “two years away from being two years away.” “Which is totally untrue.” Casey said of the criticism. “He is a basketball player. He has NBA skills, but hes just raw. “This is a young man thats going to go through our program, develop and if this young man hits, weve got something special.” Admitting Masai Ujiri was initially set on taking Toronto-native Tyler Ennis, before Phoenix nabbed him two picks prior, Casey commented that the GM felt like his team couldnt wait on taking the teenager with their second round pick because they felt like the Jazz and Suns, who had the 23rd and 27th selections respectively, would have scooped him up. “Originally we wanted to take Tyler Ennis and that was going to be our first pick at 20,” Casey said. “We had heard rumours that either Utah or Phoenix down behind us was going to take Bruno, so thats just when we moved him up and took him at 20.” To scout the Brazilian, Casey headed down to Houston for a pre-draft workout with Ujiri, who went out of his way to keep the visit under the radar, not revealing to his coach which player he was set to scout until he got off the plane. Casey, along with Ujiri came away impressed with what they saw, with the head coach saying Caboclo reminded him of another teenager who came to the league straight out of high school and who would later develop into an all-star forward: Rashard Lewis. “Hes got the athletic talent, the wingspan – hes got the same wingspan as Javhale McGee – hes athletic, has defensive ability, defensive instincts, he can shoot the three ball.” Casey: Caboclo raw, but could be special . A Los Angeles judge on Thursday said the case wont finish by Tuesday but will continue on July 21 because some lawyers for team owner Donald Sterling have personal plans. Sterling is suing to block his wifes unilateral deal to sell the team to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.Liverpool has swapped out one controversial striker for another, filling the offensive void left by Luis Suarez with the enigmatic Mario Balotelli. TSN Soccer Analyst Kristian Jack provides three things we learned from the Italian strikers move to Anfield. 1. Fenway Sports Group conducts its business away from the public eye. John Henry, Tom Werner and Larry Lucchino leaned on Theo Epstein. As the Boston Red Sox moved from lovable losers to winners on the field, their dealings off the field were equally as professional. Of course, their budget helped, but a desire to keep all of their dealings in-house was not something the Fenway Sports Group wanted. It was something they demanded. Their pursuit of star shortstop Alex Rodriguez, then of the Texas Rangers, in 2003, made recently into a short film by ESPN, showed the lengths Epstein and his assistant Jed Hoyer went to try and land A-Rod. How they failed ultimately had nothing to do with their strategic pursuit. FSG have brought that method to Liverpool. This is no longer a club regularly linked with players for weeks before they sign them. Their business is done behind closed doors and the news only breaks when the transfer is a formality. The latest acquisition of Mario Balotelli highlights this attitude and also provides the exact reasons for such a strategy. Balotelli is arguably the most polarizing footballer on the planet. Any long, drawn-out pursuit of such a player can be mentally exhausting for any organization. Liverpool conducted their search the right way and the moment it became public no one could question whether the Reds should get the Italian, as it was already a done deal. 2. Liverpool continue to shop at a realistic level when pursuing players. They do not have the budget of Manchester City or the pull geographically of Chelsea or Arsenal. They cannot afford to sign genuine world class stars on some of the sports largest contracts. However, that doesnt mean Liverpool cannot attract good players. When they sold Fernando Torres to Chelsea they want shopping at the cheaper, Dutch Erevidisie, store and brought in Luis Suarez. With Suarez at Barcelona, Liverpool went on a search to find his replacement. They were linked with Edinson Cavani and Radamel Falcao but they were never realistically in their price range. Those are in the elite class of centre-forwards, a class Liverpool shouldnt waste their time looking at. Instead, Liverpool have landed on a player with incredible potential, a player who they could help graduate to such a class within the next couple of years. It represents great business for manager Brendan Rodgers and CEO Ian Ayre who get a player with experience at the top level but who has underperformed during his career so far. It sends a messagee to the other players in the squad that the club is serious about maintaining their current level as contenders for Champions League spots each season.dddddddddddd Much like the Suarez signing, it is also an acquisition that can set them for years because if Rodgers gets the best out of Balotelli he could end up selling him for five times the price when he is at the peak of his career in two or three seasons. 3. Balotelli remains one of the most overrated players in the game. It will be said that three major clubs have now happily moved on from the Italian and he is only 24. While this is true, the move away from Manchester City was the real indictment on the strikers career. At Inter he left for the bright lights of England under Roberto Mancini with a substantial pay packet, while at Milan it was clear the team was not good enough to have to put up with the issues he brings. Many of the issues off the field have been reported regularly but Balotellis biggest issue of all is the type of player he is on the field. At Manchester City he was incapable of adapting to different roles. He sulked when being taken off, was a liability when asked to play in any other position than up top and wasnt mentally strong enough to wait for his chance. The sport can humble players very quickly but the position he plays requires tremendous patience and maturity as you might only get one chance to win a game. Balotellis ineffectiveness in this area is not down to immaturity. He is three years younger than Lionel Messi and, at 24, is far from the kid many refer to him as. Such negative aspects of his game meant he was no longer a fit in a very good side like City who had better players. It also meant he was no longer a fit in a very average side like Milan because his demands didnt match up with the talent around him. His demands have also not matched up with his own talent. He is built very much like a striker who can play up top on his own, but his overall attitude and tendency to drift out of games is one of the reasons he hasnt started as many Champions League games as he should have. He has an abysmal scoring record in that competition and that will need to change quickly for him to reach the next level. How he left his three previous teams was not all down to his own inefficiencies, however, each time the jury remained out on what type of player he can become. He now goes to a club that will embrace him, a club that creates many goal scoring opportunities that will give him many situations in which to succeed. Balotellis time is now: A time that will allow the jury of public opinion to sit back and see if he develops. How and when he ultimately ends up leaving Liverpool will tell us exactly what type of player he has become. ’ ’ ’ |

Ben Bishop stopped 28 shots for Tampa Bay (32-18-5), which snapped a two-game losing streak. Daniel Briere was the lone goal scorer for Montreal (29-20-6). Carey Price made 34 saves. Thompson scored at 4:36 of overtime when Alex Killorn found him all alone in from of Prices net. The Lightning now have a five-point advantage over the Canadiens in the Atlantic Division. After the Lightning took a 1-0 lead in the second period, Briere levelled the score at 7:25 of the third, taking a cross-ice pass from captain Brian Gionta and firing home his ninth of the season over Bishops shoulder. The goal was Brieres second in as many games. Thompson was credited with the games first goal, at 5:58 of the second, after P.K. Subban put the puck in his own net. With Killorn in the penalty box for interference, Thompson skated into the Canadiens zone and sent an innocent-looking pass in the direction of the net. Subban deflected the puck between Prices legs to give Tampa Bay the lead on a short-handed goal. The Bolts tested Price early on, benefiting from a penalty shot at 4:41 of the first when rookie defenceman Nathan Beaulieu hooked Nikita Kucherov on a breakaway. Kucherov tried beating Price under the blocker, but the Canadiens netminder got the better of him. Prust approached Bishop, who took offence at his comments and swung at the Montreal forwards head. Prust answered with a couple of jabs of his own before referees separated them. All players on the ice got involved in the scrum. Five players were penalized on the play, including Price for leaving his goaltender crease. Bishop and Prust each got a minor penalty. Téma: Jak postupovat / ful fighter, so my strategy COLUMBUS, Ohio — Bradley Wright-Phillips continued his hot scoring with the second-half equalizer and the New York Red Bulls rallied to tie Columbus 1-1 on Saturday. He followed a three-goal game in a 4-0 win against Houston on Wednesday with his fifth goal of the season in the 66th minute. He settled a pass from Lloyd Sam on the left side of the box and put a shot through the legs of Crew defender Josh Williams and off the right post. “I ended up getting a good touch on it and getting a good strike on goal because I let two in the first half get away so I wanted to get one on target,” Wright-Phillips said. He understands that a goal streak like hes on doesnt come around often. “Two weeks ago that probably would have got blocked and gone the other way on the attack,” he said. “Thats how football goes, especially for strikers. We score a few games then you dont.” Jairo Arrieta gave Columbus (3-1-3) the lead in the 39th minute with his first penalty kick attempt of his three-year Crew career after New York defender Kosuke Kimura fouled Justin Meram. The Red Bulls (2-2-5) are 2-0-1 in their past three games. “Its a very good point for us,” Red Bulls coach Mike Petke said. “I was pleased with many aspects of the performance tonight. Obviously, after the first seven minutes we should have been up 2-0. There were two breakaways.” The Crew is winless in four (0-1-3) including three straight draws, after opening the season with three consecutive victories under first-year coach Gregg Berhalter. “It was a decent effort,” he said. “Heads were down in the locker room after the game because we couldnt close it out; we couldnt get the three points but there were a lot of positives.” . Gustafsson controlled the first round after getting top position on a throw, and came out much more forcefully in the second, buckling Manuwa with a Muay Thai knee, and finishing him off with strikes on the ground. “I was so glad to get a decision because my last couple of fights have gone the distance,” the Swede said. “Jimi Manuwa is a tough, powerful fighter, so my strategy was to try and wear him down a bit and drain that power. Téma: Jak postupovat / g that the school would Got a question on the latest news and rumours? E-mail Hockey Insider Darren Dreger and hell answer your emails at dregereport@tsn.ca! Hi Darren, I am a long time Sharks fan who is getting absolutely sick of watching my team roll over and die come playoff time. Yes, they made it to the conference finals the past couple of years (not including this one obviously), but lets be real – Chicago and Vancouver walked all over them. I have always felt that the majority of the team lacked the heart, tenacity, and effort needed to clear the last hurdle and get to the finals. Further, they lacked discipline and speed to keep up with the big boys in the conference. Personally, I am hoping for some major changes as the current core group isnt getting the job done when it matters most. Realistically, what should we expect from Doug Wilson this summer? Who stays, who goes, and do you think any big name players will be added via trade (e.g., Nash) or free agency (e.g., Parise)? Thanks for your time Darren! Sincerely,Scott A: Scott, its possible Wilson once again attacks his core in an effort to push this team over the hump, but it seems unlikely. Thornton, Couture, Pavelski, Clowe, Havlat and Boyle are all important pieces and contractually, in some cases, hard to move. Likewise for Patrick Marleau, whose name I purposely excluded from the list for sake of further discussion. Marleaus future is questioned on an annual basis and always in the days after the Sharks are eliminated from the playoffs. Hes a proven 30-goal man, but expectation has never matched reality in terms of his overall production. Marleau has a no-trade/no move clause and will earn $6.9 million per for the next two seasons. Its hard to imagine Marleau could convince his family to move to Columbus to help facilitate a trade for Rick Nash and the only way this should be considered as even a remote possibility is to include a third team getting involved, providing Marleau with a more attractive opportunity both personally and professionally. Again…not likely. Wilson is a very active GM and I have no doubt he will make appropriate gestures in free agency if either Ryan Suter or Zach Parise choose to go that route, but to add another salary at $7 million or more will require additional moves to make financial sense. I dont think its ever fair to question the heart of an NHL player, but in Round 1, it was clear the St. Louis Blues were willing to pay a price the Sharks couldnt – or werent prepared to – match. Darren, What do you think was Paul MacLeans logic putting Jakub Silfverberg in the Sens lineup in their first-round series? He may have been a good player overseas, but had no playing time this year with the Sens or Baby Sens! Chris,Ottawa A: Chris, no sense second-guessing now. Ottawa battled hard and pushed the top team in the East to the brink of elimination. Silfverberg was a standout player in both the Swedish Elite Leagues regular season and playoffs and Sens GM Bryan Murray says he worked hard to convince the young Swede to stay in Ottawa last fall, but Silfverberg wanted to return to his home country for one more year. MacLean was hoping for a little spark from Silfverberg. Why not throw something at the Rangers they probably werent planning on or expecting? When you have injuries, or players playing hurt, which is the norm this time of year, confident and creative coaches will find ways to inject new blood into their lineup. Its easy to say now MacLeans decision to dress Silfverberg was sketchy, but given the fact he had made the team out of training camp and followed that up with a stellar year in the SEL, it was a risk worth taking. Hi Darren, Do you think Tim Thomas has played his last game with the Bruins? And do you see them making a lot of changes this year or not a lot because so many of their players werent producing? Jeff A: Jeff, gut instinct tells me yes – Thomas has likely played his last game with the Bruins. The 38-year-old has one year remaining at $5 million (cap hit) and contractually, cant be traded before July 1 without consent. My view is the Bruins see Tuukka Rask as being ready to handle the challenge of being a No. 1. Hes paid his dues and will be more affordable than Thomas, which given the Bruins payroll next season ($59 million-plus), GM Peter Chiarelli is going to have to spend his money wisely. Rask, whos scheduled to become a restricted free agent, will get a beefy raise on the $1.25 million he earned this season. In 23 games, Bostons backup posted an impressive .929 save percentage providing further evidence hes good to go. There will be changes in Boston aside from goaltending. Chiarelli has seven unrestricted free agents to deal with including veterans, Joe Corvo, Gregory Campbell and Chris Kelly. Campbell and Kelly will very likely return, but there will be a natural turnover based on expiring contracts. Hey Dregs, Were not hearing much from Montreal about where theyre at with the GM search, but do you buy into the fan theory that the new GM will have to have Patrick Roy as the new head coach? Sarah Shaw,Toronto A: Sarah, give credit to the four-man hiring committee in Montreal for doing an excellent job of keeping this process low key and hidden from public scrutiny. Its my understanding progress in the search for a GM is being made and a final decision and subsequent announcement may be only days away. As for Patrick Roy, I dont believe for a second the hiring of the general manager in any way is connected to Patrick Roy as Montreals next head coach. At the beginning of this search, my sources stated the new GM would be given the freedom to determine Randy Cunneyworths fate and ultimately, his successor on the Canadiens bench. Roy would be an excellent candidate as would Marc Crawford or perhaps Alain Vigneault if the Vancouver Canucks opt for a coaching change. More on that below. Hey Darren, So it looks like Bobby Lu is heading out of Van City, we all know its just a matter of time and the Luongo ultimately has a choice of teams to go to, my question is what can the Canucks expect back in return for him other then cap space, as it looks like there are some teams around the league that do have interest in his services! Monica Marques A: Hi Monica. I dont see any way Roberto Luongo returns to the Canucks. By starting Cory Schneider in three consectuive first round playoff games, the message to Luongo was delivered and received. Schneider is the goalie this team believes in and intends to move forward with. Luongo isnt going to kick up a fuss or stomp his feet on the way out of town, but he is going to have considerable input into where a trade will move his family. Obviously, his mega-term contract is going to have a negative impact on the number of teams interested, but its hard to imagine Toronto, Chicago, Tampa Bay and perhaps Florida wont be among them. Cap space for the Canucks will dictate the return, but the true contenders for Luongo will appreciate his value covers the next 3-5 years. After that, the contract and $5.3 million cap hit becomes an anchor. For this reason, Vancouver may have to take a bad contract back…along with a young asset and draft pick likely included. . Its a premium owner with equity. And its a very, very good team that with additional premium talent could become a contending team.” Outside of catcher Dioner Navarro, the Jays, tipped to be after free agent pitching and a second baseman, have remained entirely inactive while the likes of Ubaldo Jimenez, A.J. Burnett and Masahiro Tanaka found new clubs. Because the team has two protected first-round picks, the Jays seemingly would have leverage when it comes to compensation-eligible free agents. Anthopoulos, for his part, defended ownership on being informed of Borass remarks. “Our ownership has been outstanding and given us all the resources we need,” said Anthopoulos. The Blue Jays and Boras have traditionally had a frosty relationship. Borass very first major contract showdown was between the Jays and reliever Bill Caudill in 1984. After acquiring the pitcher from the Oakland As, Boras negotiated a five-year extension for his client at $1.5 million a season that made him the highest paid player on the team. Caudill flamed out due to injury and was released in 1986 after pitching only jjust over 105 innings for the team.dddddddddddd The acrimony from the deal lingered. In 2009, the Jays drafted lefty starter James Paxton of Ladner, BC. The Jays could not come to an agreement with Paxton, who was being advised by Boras at the time, and he chose to head back to the University of Kentucky to play for its baseball team. Blue Jays president Paul Beeston called into question the actual nature of Paxtons relationship with Boras. “Because it was Scott, the way you deal, you deal through him,” Beeston told the Globe and Mail at the time. “You dont deal through the family.” The NCAA allows its athletes to have “family advisers,” but forbids them from having agents, as it would compromise their amateur status. Due to Beestons comments, the NCAA launched an investigation into Paxtons arrangement with Boras. Paxton did not participate with the investigation out of fear of being suspended by the school. Kentucky, fearing that the school would face sanctions if it allowed Paxton to play whilst under investigation, filed a motion that allowed Paxton to keep his scholarship and remain part of the team, but did not let him actually play in any games. Part of that filing included the suggestion that Paxton breached the “no agent” rule. Paxton, now a member of the Seattle Mariners, was eventually declared ineligible and left the school for a Texas team in the independent league. Boras currently represents two of the last three compensation free agents on the market (with starter Ervin Santana the other) in Stephen Drew and Kendrys Morales. The Jays dont appear to have any interest in Morales, but could explore the possibility of slotting Drew in at second base. The 30-year-old former Red Sox shortstop has never played a game at second in his career. The Blue Jays open their exhibition schedule on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies in Dunedin, Florida. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / Raptor Steve Novak drained t BALTIMORE — Baltimore manager Buck Showalter is running out of adjectives to describe how much Steve Pearce has meant to the Orioles this season. Pearce had a career-high four hits and drove in two runs, and Wei-Yin Chen shut down Texas again as the Orioles completed a four-game sweep of the Rangers with a 5-2 victory on Thursday night. The Rangers have lost nine consecutive road games — their longest skid since 2005 when Showalter was Texas manager. Baltimore (46-39) completed its first four-game sweep against the Rangers since 2004 and improved to a season-high seven games over .500. The Orioles managed the feat while playing without All-Star third baseman Manny Machado, who is serving a five game suspension for throwing his bat on June 8 against Oakland. “Were relying on some people, and people are stepping up,” Pearce said. “Were pitching, were hitting. Were having timely hitting. Were finding ways to get it done.” Chen (8-3) allowed two runs and six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in six innings. He is 4-0 in four starts against Texas with a 1.67 ERA. Left-hander Zach Britton earned his 12th save and hasnt allowed a run in 21 consecutive relief appearances. Pearce, who was released at the end of April and then re-signed, had eight RBIs in the four-game series. Since the beginning of June, he is 31 for 81 (.383) with nine doubles and 17 RBIs. Nick Hundley had two of Baltimores six doubles and scored twice. Texas right-hander Yu Darvish, who was scheduled to pitch Thursday, was pushed back one day after rain delayed the start of the game. With the threat of more rain after a nearly one-hour delay, Rangers manager Ron Washington decided to use long reliever Scott Baker against Baltimore and save Darvish until Friday night when Texas will take on the Mets in New York. The game, however, didnt have another delay. The Orioles are scheduled to play an afternoon game in Boston on Friday. “Its so hard to win a four-game series, or three out of four, in the major leagues,” Showalter said. “The guys kept a real intensity level through the rain delay, not knowing whether we were going to play or not. So many dynamics of whats going on with the 1:30 game (Friday), and weather issues there, getting in and out tonight.” Baker (0-2) allowed three runs and seven hits with two strikeouts and one intentional walk in 4 2-3 innings. Shin-Soo Choo hit his eighth homer of the season for Texas (37-48), which has lost 13 of 15. “Bake was on alert (Wednesday) when we knew of the weather,” Washington said. “It wasnt all of a sudden that Bake would be the guy. He knew coming into today that it was going to be a possibility so he prepared. He went out there and did a good job for us.” It was the first time in the Orioles last 34 wins that they didnt hit a homer. Baltimore took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Pearce hit a one-out RBI single to left. Texas responded the next inning when Carlos Penas grounder to second scored Adrian Beltre, who led off with a single. Choo made it 2-1 with a solo shot off Chen in the fifth. “I knew it was going to be delayed from the start so I just went through my routine and waited for the notice that the game was going to start,” Chen said through a translator. “So, it wasnt all that difficult. Six innings is the baseline for a starter, so I feel content but I do hope that next time I can go further, deeper in the game.” Baltimore regained the lead at 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning. After Ryan Flaherty led off with a double, Hundley followed with another double, and scored on Pearces double to centre. “I probably ran out of gas at the end a little bit,” Baker said. “It was pretty muggy out there. It was kind of hard to catch your breath. I would have liked to have made some better pitches, especially that fifth inning. You just cant expect to give a couple of doubles and then them not to score. I would have liked to have had a better showing.” The Orioles added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Adam Jones and an RBI single by Chris Davis. NOTES: Baltimore OF Henry Urrutia (sports hernia surgery) will begin a rehab assignment next week. … Baltimore RHP Bud Norris (strained right groin) took fielding drills, and is expected to throw a bullpen session or simulated game on Friday. Téma: Jak postupovat / e in the first few minutes PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Jimmy Walker and Jordan Spieth are tied for the lead at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, which should surprise no one. Walker went eight years and 187 starts on the PGA Tour before his first victory, and now he cant seem to lose. He already has won twice in this new wraparound season, the Frys.com Open and Sony Open, and he has played 36 holes this week without making a bogey. That included a 69 at Spyglass Hill on Friday. And it helps that Walker has finished in the top 10 at Pebble Beach each of the last three years. “Its definitely not old,” he said of this position he keeps finding himself in. “Ive been here before after 36 holes and after 54 and after 72. You do get more comfortable and you start to realize what it takes.” Spieth had an amazing rookie season, going from no status at the start of the year to No. 7 in the FedEx Cup and a spot on the Presidents Cup team. And the 20-year-old Texan has shown no sign of stopping. Throw out that missed cut at the Sony Open, a matter of the hole failing to get in the way of his putts, and consider his start. He led after the first and third rounds at Kapalua, where he played in the final group and finished second. He led after 36 holes at the Farmers Insurance Open and played in the final group at Torrey Pines. Spieth had a 67 at Monterey Peninsula, following a 67 at Spyglass Hill, and now heads to Pebble Beach. In his young career — 27 tournaments in the book since turning pro — he already has a win at the John Deere Classic and four runner-up finishes. Spieth doesnt see the four second-place finishes as failures, rather learning experiences, which shows a maturity beyond his years. Both still have one more day before they can truly figure out where they stand. Walker was at 9-under 135 and heads to Monterey Peninsula, the easiest of the three courses in the rotation. Spieth was at 9-under 134 and goes to Pebble Beach, which can be brutal in nasty weather. And the forecast for Saturday was not particularly pleasant. Along with a three-club wind on the exposed sections of all three courses, steady rain began coming down sideways toward the end of the second round. There was about a 75 per cent chance for more rain Saturday, and Sunday didnt appear to be much better. More than looking ahead, Spieth was looking behind. He was happy to at least get Spyglass out of the way already, having opened with a 67 on Thursday. That didnt make the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula a picnic. “Today was very difficult,” Spieth said. “We started out in the rain and wind, and we finished in rainier and windier,” he said. Spieth caught Walker for a share of the lead on the 187-yard ninth hole, which typically requires a 6-iron. He watched Kevin Chappell hit first with a 3-iron, and the ball rolled back down off the front of the green. Spieth doesnt carry a 3-iron. “I went to a hybrid,” he said. “And I just kind of hit a little stinger cut about 20 feet away. And then it was normally a straight putt and Michael (Greller) and I, my caddie, are looking at each other saying, Well, weve got to play this about a foot out to the right with the wind. And so I hit it a foot out. With about 3 feet to go, the wind just blew it right, just broke perfectly right into the hole.” Walkers best holes were his pars, particularly the par-5 14th. His 8-iron came back down into a bunker, leaving him such an awkward lie that he had to plant his feet outside the sand. With a shallow swing, he did well to blast out 12 feet away, and he made the par putt. “That was pretty big to keep it feeling like things were still in my favour,” Walker said. He made two long birdie putts, and then hit a drive of nearly 390 yards on the seventh hole |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ur fingers," Harper said. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing will field a second IndyCar entry for Oriol Servia this season in at least four races, more if sponsorship can be secured. Servia is currently scheduled to compete at Long Beach, Barber, the inaugural road course race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500 in a deal announced Wednesday. The Rahal organization last month finished a drawn-out process to secure sponsorship from the National Guard for Graham Rahals car. Team owner Bobby Rahal has insisted he would only field two cars if it would strengthen the organization, and Graham Rahal said he told his dad he didnt want to “rob Peter to pay Paul” just to have a teammate. But in Servia, the organization gets a veteran driver who was briefly teammates with Graham Rahal at Newman-Haas-Lanigan Racing in 2009. Servia also ran the Indy 500 that season for Bobby Rahal. “We have had the pleasure of working with Oriol before and are looking forward to his return,” Bobby Rahal said. “I have always respected his ability to develop the race car and be a productive member of the team, so when it came time to consider the possibility of a second entry, he was right at the top of the list. We are happy to have him back and look forward to having him help the team progress toward the front.” A native of Pals, Spain, Servia has made 191 starts in CART, Champ Car and the IndyCar Series since 2000. He won at Montreal in 2005, has 19 career podium finishes and was fourth in the 2012 Indianapolis 500. His Panther DRR team shut down after last years Indy 500, and he ran seven of the final 14 races for Panther Racing. “Continuity is a very important part of success in any racing team,” said Servia. “By my moving to Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, this happens at many different levels. On the team side, in 2009 we did the 500 together as a one-off race. We were running very strong until we had a fuel pump fail on us, but that one race left us with a sensation that we could do great things together. That same year I did a short stint at Newman/Haas/Lanigan where my teammate was Graham, and that also started a great chemistry between us that translated to results on track.” Servia will participate in the IndyCar Series open test at Barber in two weeks. “There are enough synergies within the team that make me feel positive, that even if we may be starting a little late, we will hit the road running,” he said. Also on the DL are starting pitcher Doug Fister (back), who is scheduled for a rehab start on Sunday, and reserve outfielder Scott Hairston (side). “Weve got a lot of off days in the next 15, so thats huge,” Harper said. Harper went 2 for 2 and had a career-high four RBIs on Friday night, giving him nine for the season as he lifted his batting average to .289. He has only one home run in 83 at-bats. “Its frustrating,” Harper said. “I want to be out there and be able to help my team win every single day.” Steven Souza Jr. was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to replace him on the roster but was not in the lineup Sunday. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ill not require CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Al Jefferson sat at his locker pondering how the Charlotte Bobcats nearly surrendered a 30-point lead they held late in the third quarter. “Of course we had to make it a game,” Jefferson said with a grin. “We couldnt enjoy an easy win, right?” It never seems that easy for the Bobcats. Despite the big lead, Jefferson and Bobcats didnt breathe a sigh of relief until Ramon Sessions knocked down two free throws with 1.6 seconds left to secure a 100-95 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday. Jefferson became the first Bobcats player to record a double-double in the first quarter and finished with 22 points, 19 rebounds and a season-high seven assists and the Bobcats defeated the Raptors for the seventh straight time in Charlotte. “The important thing is we came out of it with a win,” Jefferson said after the Bobcats withstood a furious Toronto rally that included several 3-pointers. It was Charlottes first game without point guard Kemba Walker, whose streak of 190 straight games played — the second-longest in franchise history — was snapped. Walker sprained his ankle in a loss Saturday night to the Miami Heat. But the Bobcats got more than enough from their two reserve point guards as Sessions and the seldom-used Jannero Pargo combined for 40 points on 10 of 17 shooting. Sessions started and had 23 points in 34 minutes and was 10 of 11 from the line. “We knew they were going to make a run sooner or later, especially with how good theyve been playing,” Sessions said. “We didnt expect it to be that big of a run.” DeMar DeRozan had 25 points and Kyle Lowry had 21 for the Atlantic Division-leading Raptors, who fell to .500 after their fourth straight road loss. The Raptors were down 71-41 with 4:37 left in the third quarter when they started to find some energy. They outscored the Bobcats 28-0 on second-chance points, but it still wasnt enough. Toronto twice had chances to tie the game in the final two minutes, but Lowry missed a free throw and Greivis Vasquez couldnt connect on a long 3-pointer. “To be a championship team or even think about the playoffs, youve got to play back-to-back, you have to play nicked up, youve got to play a little fatigued,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. "Right now, we have a bunch of guys who are giving into fatigue and nicked up. Its a long season, but, again, you tell a lot about who you are in these situations. “This was a gut-check game. In the fourth quarter, we turned it around. But its about what we did in the first three quarters that was disappointing.” Despite nearly surrendering a huge lead, Bobcats coach Steve Clifford called it a “big win” for his team with Walker out of the lineup. Jefferson, who came in averaging 27.8 points and 11.5 rebounds for his previous four games, had 14 points and 12 rebounds in the first half as the Bobcats went up 55-36. But the Raptors began double teaming Jefferson in the third quarter with Chuck Hayes the primary defender. “Chuck and I are great friends, but I hate him as a defender,” Jefferson said. “Hes one of those guys thats very smart and you cant move him.” Things got hairy for the Bobcats when DeRozan stripped Jefferson and went the length of the floor for an uncontested layup to trim the lead to three with 2:33 left. With 26 seconds left, Lowry drove the lane, scored and drew a foul on Jefferson to cut the lead to one. But he missed the free throw that would have tied the game. Sessions hit two free throws to push the lead back to three. Vasquez, who finished with 15 points and nine assists in his best game as a Raptor, got an open look from the right corner on the next possession but missed a 3-pointer from the right corner. Walker is expected to miss about two weeks after spraining his ankle in Saturday nights loss to Miami. He had 29 points against the Raptors on Dec. 18, including a buzzer beater in a 104-102 victory. But Sessions and Pargo provided a great spark. Sessions had nine points in the first quarter and Pargo came off the bench to hit his first three shots, including two 3-pointers, in his first four minutes of play in the second quarter. NOTES: The 36 points in the first half were the fewest allowed by the Bobcats all season — they held the Raptors to 33 per cent shooting. … Jefferson posted his third straight game with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds. .. .Charlotte has won nine of its past 14 against Toronto. .. Toronto attempted 29 3-pointers. They made 10. . Téma: Jak postupovat / er," Blatter said. Ancelotti defen NORMAN, Okla. — During Kansas shootaround on Wednesday before the Jayhawks faced Oklahoma, coach Bill Self told Wayne Selden Jr. that the freshman needed to be more aggressive on offence. Selden Jr. did what Self told him, scoring a career-high 24 points and going 5 of 10 from 3-point range, and No. 18 Kansas started Big 12 Conference play with a 90-83 win over Oklahoma. Kansas (10-4, 1-0) won its conference opener for the 23rd straight year, a streak that began with the 1991-92 season. Oklahoma, in January 1991, was the last team to beat the Jayhawks in a conference opener. “It was the confidence my teammates and coaches have in me,” Selden Jr. said of his successful game. "I was out there just playing and not thinking. “Thats just Kansas basketball. Were trying to start off Big 12 play on the right foot, so we feel like weve got to go after all loose balls and weve got to pick up our defensive intensity. … I know its tradition-rich and I just want to put forth my best effort and the team wants to put forth its best effort to keep it going.” Perry Ellis had 22 points on 6-for-8 shooting and 11 rebounds, helping Kansas shoot 54.7 per cent from the field. After a 5-0 start, the Jayhawks lost four of its next eight and were coming off a 61-57 loss to San Diego State on Sunday that ended their 68-game home winning streak against nonconference foes. Kansas has won 11 of the last 12 matchups with Oklahoma. The Jayhawks latest win in the series could be especially important, considering the difficult stretch they face to start the Big 12 campaign. After Oklahoma, Kansas will host No. 25 Kansas State, visit No. 9 Iowa State, then host No. 11 Oklahoma State and No. 7 Baylor, all in succession. “Its going to be a monster,” Self said. “Our league is great. When you think about OU and they go down and they win at Texas, and Texas wins at North Carolina. K-State is playing as well as anybody right now. Iowa State is obviously terrific, and Baylor. Weve probably been, nonconference-wise, one of the bigger disappointments in the league, based on our preseason expectations. I think its going to be a fabulous league.” Cameron Clark had a career high-tying 32 points for Oklahoma (12-3, 1-1), which lost for the second time in three games. In losses to Louisiana Tech and Kansas, the Sooners gave up 102 and 90 points, respectively. “It is very frustrating,” Clark said. “We just have to go back to the drawing board. It all starts on defence. We just have to come together as a group and figured out what it is we are not doing and get better at it.” The annual visit to Lloyd Noble Center by the Jayhawks — who have won or shared nine straight Big 12 titles — drew fans including country music star Toby Keith, Oklahoma City Thunder chairman Clay Bennett, and Thunder general manager Sam Presti. Before the game, Oklahoma football player Sterling Shepard — who scored two touchdowns in the Sooners win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl — appeared in a video in which he said, “OK, basketball, we got our big win. Now its time to get yours.” But the Sooners never really slowed Kansas and struggled to deal with the Jayhawks size advantage inside. Kansas had a 36-22 edge in rebounding and didnt seem bothered by a subpar game by Andrew Wiggins. The star freshman went 2 of 9 from the field and scored only nine points, only the second time this season he failed to reach double digits. “Kansas is awfully good and did a good job dictating a lot of it, for a majority of the minutes,” Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. “I thought our guys battled hard. There were maybe a couple of stretches in there when we didnt quite compete like we have to against a club like that to have a chance that wed like to have.” Kansas led 50-44 at halftime and two free throws by Joel Embild made it 74-62 with 10:39 left. Oklahoma stayed within striking distance and pulled within four points four times, the last time at 87-83 after a turnover by Wiggins and steal by Ryan Spangler led to a dunk by Buddy Hield with 39.9 seconds left. Naadir Tharpe made two free throws moments later to push Kansas lead to six points and, after Clark missed a 3 at the other end, Ellis made the back end of a two-shot free-throw opportunity to make it 90-83 with 29.2 seconds left. Wiggins blocked another 3-point attempt, by Frank Booker, and the Jayhawks eventually were able to run out the clock. Tharpe scored 17 points for Kansas on 5-for-7 shooting. Hield had 18 points and eight rebounds for the Sooners, while Tyler Neal and Jordan Woodard had 10 points each. Woodard got all his scoring at the free-throw line, going 10 for 10 as Oklahoma made 29 of 36. Kansas went 24 for 30 from the line. Kansas shot 64.3 per cent from the field in the first half, led by Selden Jr., who matched his previous career scoring high of 15 a little more than 8 minutes into the game. “We were a team that lacked confidence coming in, so it was nice to see a freshman step up and basically give us confidence early on, because thats about as well as weve executed half-court offence, probably, all year, in the first half,” Self said. Kansas jumped to a 20-11 lead, but Oklahoma hung close thanks to 19-of-22 on free throws. With the score tied at 39 with 3:04 left before halftime, Wiggins was called for his second foul and Self protested, earning himself a technical foul. Oklahoma made all four subsequent free throws to go ahead. Foul trouble forced Self to dig deep into his bench and freshman Conner Frankamp hit a 3-pointer and a 2 in the final 1:13 to give Kansas the six-point halftime lead. Madrid asked Blatter on Tuesday to apologize for having mocked Ronaldo while praising Barcelona rival Lionel Messi at a recent event in England. Blatter had told an audience at Oxford University that Ronaldo “is like a commander on the field of play” before strutting around the stage to the laughs of the students in attendance. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said that club president Florentino Perez had sent a letter to Blatter asking him to “rectify what I consider a lack of respect for a serious and professional player.” Blatter later responded by saying Ronaldo was an “exceptional” player. In a statement provided to the AP, FIFA said that Blatter had “confirmed in letters sent to Real Madrid CF as well as the Portuguese Football Association that Cristiano Ronaldo is an exceptional player – as he had already mentioned at the Oxford University event last Friday, and on many other occasions.” While slighting Ronaldo during the public event, Blatter said he preferred Messi, the Argentina forward who has won FIFAs world player of the year award for the past four years. Ronaldo won the award in 2008, finishing second in voting behind Messi in 2009, 2011 and 2012. Ronaldo took Blatters stinging words, and mimicry, to heart, and apparently wasnt convinced by Blatters attempt at making amends. “This video shows clearly the respect and consideration that FIFA has for me, for my club and my country,” Ronaldo wrote on his Facebook page late Tuesday. “Much is explained now. I wish Mr. Blatter health and a long life, with the certainty that he will continue to wiitness, as he deserves, the successes of his favourite teams and players.dddddddddddd.” Earlier on Tuesday, FIFA included Ronaldo and Messi on its list of 23 finalists for this years world player of the year award. The list will be pared down to three players in early December. “Messi is a good boy, that every father and every mother would like to have at home,” Blatter told the Oxford crowd. “Hes a kind man, a good boy. Thats what makes him so popular, and naturally hell always get a lot of votes because he plays well and scores goals.” Then, while comparing Messi and Ronaldo, Blatter made a joke about Ronaldos hair. “They dont have the same attitude and that gives life to football. One has more expenses for the hairdresser than the other but that doesnt matter,” Blatter said. Ancelotti defended Ronaldos character. “I completely agree with the president (Perez),” Ancelotti said. “I havent spoken to Ronaldo about this. I think he shows every day and in every match that he is a serious and professional player that respects everyone.” Ronaldo also received support in Portugal. Portuguese football federation president Fernando Gomes said Ronaldo is “often misunderstood because hes forthright and honest,” and that his frankness sometimes “gives rise to a negative image which isnt him.” The spat is bound to strengthen the belief among some Madrid fans and sections of the Madrid-based sports media that FIFA has a bias for Barcelona and Messi. Former Madrid coach Jose Mourinho snubbed FIFAs awards gala for the past two years while he was at the Spanish club, as did Ronaldo in 2012. Mourinho accused Barcelona of receiving help from FIFA referees in ousting Madrid from the 2011 Champions League semifinals. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / aonic, from Thornhill, On Trailing going into the third period of Game One, the Vancouver Canucks upped the ante, scoring two goals in the final frame to overtake the San Jose Sharks. Vancouver outshot San Jose 13-7 in the third period and the rally was sparked by Henrik Sedin, really not a moment too soon considering his struggles in this postseason. Henrik had been held off the scoresheet in seven of the last ten games, a span during which hes been an appalling minus-11. An even rating and two points Sunday night, then, was a nice upgrade on his recent performance. Sedin scored the game-winner at 8:21 of the third, off a nice feed from Christian Ehrhoff on the power play, just 1:19 after defenceman Kevin Bieksa scored the tying goal following a nice setup from Alex Burrows (who picked up the puck off a chip ahead by Henrik). On home ice, the Sedins avoided consistent defensive matchups with San Jose, as Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Niclas Wallin — who werent paired together — were the two defencemen that saw the Sedins the most in five-on-five situations (according to www.timeonice.com). centre Joe Thornton opened the Conference Final with a strong game, scoring the Sharks first goal and assisting on the second, recording five shots on goal. Sharks It was the first time in this postseason that Thornton recorded five shots on goal and, even though one of his points came on the power play and his goal was a veritable gift off a poor clearing pass by Roberto Luongo, Thorntons performance was all the more impressive considering that he is getting a steady dose of Canucks centre Ryan Kesler in this series. Antti Niemi stopped 35 of 38 shots in the losing effort, while Roberto Luongo stopped 27 of 29 to get the win. Strong, it not spectacular, performances at both ends. Considering San Jose was pushed to the limit by Detroit in the previous series, perhaps its not so surprising that they didnt have enough gas in the tank to keep up with the Canucks in Game One. At the same time, San Jose showed a nasty propensity for coughing up third period leads against Detroit and after doing just that against Vancouver in Game One, its going to be awfully easy for the Canucks to summon confidence that they can rally unless the Sharks start closing down games when they have a lead in the third period. Téma: Jak postupovat / s: Girardi said first ba Arsenal – Reports linking Arsenal to 20-year old German midfielder Julian Draxler of Schalke excite. Arsene Wenger reportedly wants to convert the player into an attacking force, much like he did with Robin Van Persie. Draxler could very well fit the mold but such a transition takes time. Arsenal has legitimate title aspirations this campaign and a more mature, ready-made attacking option is required. Will Wenger swing for the fences for a short-term push? Aston Villa – Lose a big striker, sign another. With Libor Kozak out for the season (broken leg), Villa reunites manager Paul Lambert with former Norwich City striker Grant Holt. Its hardly the move Villa supporters are looking for. The positive; the team adds more size and strength up front, which could bode well for a side desperate for goals. Villa has only scored four in their last seven league matches. Nickel and diming will only get the team so far. Cardiff City – Somehow, some way the Blue Birds are in the relegation zone. Its tight at the bottom with only five points separating 13th from 20th. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer doesnt have time to find his way, so hes bringing in young players he knows. Hes landed Norwegian midfielder Mats Moller Daehli. Cardiff has reportedly turned their sights to Manchester Uniteds Fabio and Wilfried Zaha. Both players need games and fill roles of need in South Wales. Seems like a win-win. Chelsea – The Blues spent £21 million on a player they once had. Its hardly good business, but irrelevant for an owner flush with cash. Serbian Nemanja Matic will slot into a midfield pivot role; a position of weakness for Jose Mourinho. Frank Lampard cannot play there. Michael Essien is on his way out. Marco van Ginkel would have filled the role if healthy. Its a big ask of Matic to make the quick transition to Premier League football in the middle of a title race. Good news for Chelsea, team defensive play has been outstanding, conceding just twice in their last six. Crystal Palace – The Eagles are in trouble. Help doesnt seem on the horizon in the transfer window for the last place team. Palace is playing much better under manager Tony Pulis. If it werent for a dreadful penalty miss by Jason Puncheon last weekend, Palace could have taken points from Spurs. Palace was the better side to start. There is simply no room for error for this team on a weekly basis. Everton – Ross Barkley will only miss three weeks with a broken toe. It was feared the injury was the dreaded metatarsal. More good news with reports Leighton Baines is prepared to sign a new long-term deal to stay at Goodison, fending off interest from Manchester United. Keeping the core together is essential for a team on the rise. A January purchase of another striker is required for a true push for Champions League qualification. They are perilously thin up front behind Romelu Lukaku. Fulham – A striking fall from grace for Bryan Ruiz who moves from Craven Cottage to PSV Eindhoven. Ruiz looked to be a proper Premier League attacking talent. Thankfully for the Cottagers, they have attacking talent to spare. Fulham are in desperate need of defensive help in their relegation fight. The team has conceded a disturbing 20 goals in the last six games. And yet Fulham have reportedly moved for West Hams Ravel Morrison? Strange. Hull City – The Tigers splashed £12 million in transfer fees for mediocre-at-best strikers Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long, signaling intent to stay in the BPL. Its over-spending at its finest, but I actually like the moves – a good gamble for a team playing above expectations. In Jelavic, Steve Bruce is hoping a similar return to the impressive nine goals in 13 games after his move from Rangers to Everton in 2012. The Croatian needs to impress ahead of FIFA World Cup 2014. Long is a useful player, bringing some necessary steel to the front line. Liverpool – Its been a wonderful season at Anfield, but an honest assessment of where the team would be without Luis Suarez and his 22 goals suggests they lack top-level talent across the midfield. More is needed behind him and Daniel Sturridge. A 5-3 win at the Britannia continued to expose midfield and defensive frailties. Brendan Rodgers has work to do. Will there be money for a significant January purchase? Manchester City – Huge loss for Manchester City losing Samir Nasri to a knee injury for eight weeks. Nasri has been on sensational form. The Frenchmans absence opens up a starting role for Jesus Navas, who continues to impress. Navas adds more speed and natural width to a side often playing narrow. Thats not criticism; the tactical shift will simply change the approach for a team lethal in attack. The return of Sergio Aguero also softens the blow. For all the accolades Suarez receives, Aguero has been every bit the player as the Liverpool man this season. Manchester United – Darren Fletchers return is a significant upgrade in Uniteds midfield. Tom Cleverley has proven not good enough; a passenger and non-influential in a position crying out for a difference-maker. The all-action Scottish international has shown signs of his old self, working his way back to fitness. Fletcher can fill the short-term void in the middle until United likely land a top central midfielder player (or two) in the summer. Newcastle United – In a day managers are reprimanded for any discretion, Alan Pardew has escaped FA punishment for his rant/actions during last weekends 2-0 defeat. Pardew lost it on City manager Manuel Pellegrini in a tirade not safe for print, while lashing out at referee Mike Jones for his egregious decision, disallowing Cheick Tiotes wonder-goal. Soccer is a game officiated based upon interpretation of the rules. Jones biggest wrongdoing was overruling his linesmans decision. His hasty decision was a black-mark on a game with direct implications on the title race. Another example BPL officiating simply isnt good enough. Norwich City – Three goals in their last six, the struggles continue at Carrow Road. The Canaries get more experience in the side as Jonas Gutierrez joins on-loan, but that doesnt solve issues in attack. The next three weeks (Hull, Newcastle, Cardiff) are critical. Its more than Chris Houghtons job on the line. Its Premier League survival. Southampton – Executive chairman Nicola Cortese leaving raises questions about the direction at St. Marys. Highly regarded manager Mauricio Pochettino publicly remains committed. That remains to be seen. This kind of disruption threatens mid-table teams with ambition. A potential club sale further complicates matters. Now all eyes are cast towards possible players leaving. Left-back Luke Shaw is the most desirable piece, with striker Rickie Lambert having short-term value. Sunderland – Credit manager Gus Poyet for getting the most out of this rag-tag bunch. The team is playing well and has just sold possibly the worst player in the league, Ji Dong-Won to Augsburg. Good riddance. Midfielder Ki Sung-Yeung is developing into a top player. Belief at the Stadium of Light is tangible. A team on the rise. Stoke City – The Potters in an entertaining match seems an oxy-moron. A 5-3 loss to Liverpool was as exciting as it gets (so much for the defensive wall at the Britannia). Mark Hughes team is showing willingness to attack; it just doesnt have the players. The loan signing of John Guidetti from City, however, is intriguing. Guidetti in attack adds substance to a team in need of goals. Swansea City – Injuries have ravaged the promising side. Although squad depth has been impressive, the lack of consistency in selection has hurt. The passing is wonderful, but team defending leaves much to be desired. The decision to allow Ki Sung-Yeung to stay at Sunderland shows long-term vision. Tottenham – Midfield competition has created apparent discontent. Lewis Holtby and Nacer Chadli are both reportedly seeking moves elsewhere to find playing time. Tim Sherwoods four-man midfield changes the landscape. Natural width is priority, with multi-dimensional players who can cover lots of ground. The evolution in the squad will continue. With Jermain Defoe moving to Toronto FC, another striker should be priority. Where Eric Lamela fits is unknown. West Bromwich Albion – Another squad in transition. Pepe Mel has taken over and a more continental approach, ala Swansea or Southampton is should follow. The spine of the team and youth remains impressive. Lets see how they adapt in the coming weeks. West Ham United – Last weekends 2-0 win settled the nerves at West Ham for the time being. Sam Allardyce looks set to stay. Andy Carroll has returned. And West Ham looks intent to add a striker in January. Will it all be enough to avoid relegation? The team remains a mess defensively. . Showing more spark after not taking enough challenging shots on goal in their 1-0 loss Friday night, the Bruins had 18 shots in the first period after managing just 25 in the entire opener. Luke Glendening cut Bostons lead to 2-1 at 13:20 of the second period before Milan Lucic scored late in the second and Zdeno Chara added a power-play goal early in the third. Jose Bautista hit his second homer in exhibition play for the Blue Jays. Beltrans solo home run came in the third off reliever Todd Redmond and landed far over the right-field fence. It capped a four-run inning that included a two-run homer by Eduardo Nunez. Beltran signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Yankees in the off-season. He batted .296 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs with the St. Louis Cardinals last year. “You want to see guys swinging the bat well, obviously, but its really important at the end,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “It doesnt really matter sometimes. You can be swinging the bat horrible at the end of spring training and get off to a hot start and vice versa. But its always nice to see.” Bautista connected off Vidal Nuno in the first. Nuno struck out three and gave up two hits in two innings. Toronto starter Esmil Rogers tossed two innings and allowed an earned run. The right-hander gave up three hits and struck out one. Jose Reyes, Edwin Encarnacion, Melky Cabrera and Adam Lind each doubled for the Blue Jays. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter did not play. STARTING TIME Blue Jays: Rogers threw 36 pitches and worked almost-exclusively on his changeup, which he said is progressing well. “Thats what I was working for,” Rogers said. “Down in the Dominican (Republic) during winter ball, I worked on my changeup and now I feel more comfortable. I got it before. The only reason is I didnt have too much confidence to throw that. Right now, I can throw anything I want.” Rogers was 5-9 with a 4.77 ERA in 44 games with the Blue Jays last season. He is a candidate for the fifth spot in the rotation. Yankees: Nuno said he felt as if he “got a little happy with the fastball,” which led to Bautistas home run. Nuno, who is a contender for the fifth spot in the rotation, appeared in five games with the Yankees last season and made three starts. He finished 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA. “Overall, Im just pleased a little bit with how the outcome came,” he said. “It was just one pitch and Bautista just hit it out.dddddddddddd Location was good and everything. (My fastball) just got overused a little bit and I wasnt using my secondary (pitches) like I was supposed to do.” TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: Colby Rasmus was scratched from Sundays lineup because of a stiff neck. Rasmus was set to bat seventh, but opted to sit as a precaution. He does not expect it to be a long-term issue and hopes to return in a “couple days.” “I feel all right, I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning,” Rasmus said. Anthony Gose took Rasmus place in centre field and was 0 for 3 with a strikeout. Manager John Gibbons said closer Casey Janssen had an MRI on his sore right shoulder, but it did not show any damage. “Its just inflamed,” Gibbons said. “Theres a lot of wear and tear on a guy over the years. Hes smart, backed off and well give him a little breather. Theres still a full month (of spring training) left. Hell be ready to go.” Janssen, who saved 34 games for the Blue Jays last season, said he plans to rest and start throwing again in a few days. Yankees: Girardi said first baseman Mark Teixeira, limited to 15 games last season because of a right wrist injury, might play in his first spring training game on Thursday or Friday. Alfonso Soriano, recovering from flu-like symptoms, went through a workout Sunday morning that included batting practice and defensive drills. The outfielder/designated hitter could play in his first exhibition game in the next few days. FIRE DRILL The Yankees dealt with a minor scare before the game when a towel inside of a dryer caught fire in the grounds crew clubhouse located next door to the teams clubhouse. Girardi joked that “it got a little smoky” and said some players evacuated. There was no reported damage or injuries. PINEDA PITCHES Yankees fifth starter candidate Michael Pineda, who missed the past two seasons after right shoulder surgery, threw 21 of 35 pitches for strikes in a simulated game. He faced 10 batters, allowing two hits, striking out one and walking his final two hitters. Pineda and Hiroki Kuroda are scheduled to pitch in Fridays game against the Tigers in Tampa. ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / Ryans Jersey . -- Oakland Raide MILWAUKEE — The off-season signing of free agent starter Bronson Arroyo is paying off for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 15-year veteran has been mentoring young teammates since spring training. And after a rough patch on the mound in April, hes off to a splendid start himself in May. Arroyo kept the Milwaukee Brewers at bay with off-speed stuff, allowing an unearned run and five hits in 7 1-3 innings, to lead Arizona over the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 Wednesday. Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer for the second straight game for the Diamondbacks, who have won five of seven after starting the season 8-22. Arroyo (3-2) has been one of the sparks, going 2-0 with an 0.87 ERA in his last three starts. “Hes throwing the ball good. Hes been trending in this direction and in total command today,” manager Kirk Gibson said. Wily Peralta (4-2) allowed 11 hits, tying his career high, and two runs in six innings. The right-hander had trouble all afternoon locating his pitches, including a fastball that can reach 96 mph. Arroyo doesnt throw nearly that hard, but he was even more effective against the free-swinging Brewers. “Its hard as a hitter to go up that way. You think you get a fastball and then you sit off-speed,” manager Ron Roenicke said. “The more swingers you have in your lineup, the more youll have trouble with him.” Arizona stranded 13 runners, including leaving men at third three times through the seventh. The right-handed Arroyo made up for Arizonas shortcomings at the plate with his outing on the mound. He made Jonathan Lucroy flail on an 86 mph sinker to start the seventh with a strikeout, and ended the inning by striking out Mark Reynolds on a slider. Its a far cry from a few weeks ago when Arroyo didnt make it out of the fifth and allowed a combined 18 hits and 14 runs in back-to-back outings against the Mets and Cubs. Hes backing up his encouraging words to teammates with solid starts again. “You try to do all the little things and field your position,” Arroyo said in recounting talks to younger players. “All those types of things matter. Especially for a guy like me, Im not overpowering so I have to take everything I can.” Addison Reed got his 10th save in 11 chances despite giving up a run in the ninth when Scooter Gennett doubled down the left-field line and scored two batters later on Lyle Overbays sacrifice fly. Reed struck out Reynolds swinging on a high fastball to end the game. The Brewers are now 2-6 after opening with a big league-best 20-7 record. With third-place hitter Ryan Braun out with an oblique injury and cleanup hitter Aramis Ramirez slumping badly, the offence has been choppy — leaving less margin for error for a pitching staff off to a strong start overall. “I know the lineups not the same, but we still have enough guys in there that I think we should be scoring some runs,” Roenicke said. “Well get it going, well figure it out.” Arizona escaped a jam in the eighth after the Brewers put two on with one out. Pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks then lined a single off reliever Brad Ziegler that loaded the bases for Carlos Gomez |
