MELBOURNE, Australia — The scorching weather finally brought play to a halt on the fourth day of the Australian Open when the temperature topped 43F (109F), but not soon enough for some players who criticized officials for not stopping matches earlier. The Extreme Heat Policy was enacted at Melbourne Park just before 2 p.m. Thursday, suspending all matches on outer courts until the early evening and requiring the closure of the retractable roofs at Rod Laver and Hisense arenas before play could continue on the show courts. It was the first time since 2009 play had been halted due to heat at the Australian Open. For Maria Sharapova, playing at Rod Laver Arena, the call came too late. The rule dictates the roof cant be closed until the end of a set in progress, so she was forced to finish a grueling third set against Italian Karin Knapp under the blazing sun. “Everyone knows there is no tiebreaker in the third set (at the Australian Open), so once you start that set, youre going to be out there until youre done,” she said after closing out the 3 1/2-hour match, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8. Other players wilted in the heat. American Varvara Lepchenko received medical treatment during her match against 11th-seeded Romanian Simona Halep, lying flat on her back during a changeover as trainers rubbed iced on her body. “At first I didnt understand what was going on but then my legs, my arms started to get heavier. I couldnt focus at one point and started feeling dizzier and dizzier,” she said. She continued but only won one more game in a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 defeat. “They definitely should have just not started the matches in the first place,” she said. “And the same goes for a couple of days ago when I played my (first) match.” The heat wave began Tuesday when the temperature peaked at 42C (108F). The tournament referee did not halt play then because the Extreme Heat Policy also takes into account other factors, such as humidity and wind speed. The distinction is lost on the players, who have grumbled all week about the conditions which some have described as inhumane and dangerous. On Tuesday, Canadian Frank Dancevic blacked out and hallucinated during his match, while Chinas Peng Shuai vomited and suffered cramps. No. 25-seeded Alize Cornet of France sobbed on court Thursday after her draining 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Italian Camila Giorgi, then blasted officials for not halting play sooner. “On Tuesday, I dont know why they didnt stop matches,” she said. “It was an oven. An oven. It was burning. Why today and not Tuesday?” The heat hasnt just affected players — its also kept fans away. Total attendance was just 49,860 on Wednesday, down from Mondays high of 63,595. The unshaded seats on the outer courts were virtually empty Thursday, with spectators congregating under trees or in the upper reaches of stands where temporary covers provided a little relief. New Zealander Helen Naylor escaped the sun after watching fellow Kiwi Marina Erakovic play for a bit on Court 13. “Even the seats are really hot — God knows how (the players) are running around out there.” Relief is as least in sight. Friday will be another scorcher, with an expected high of 44C (111F), but Saturday it will only reach 23C (73F). That may feel downright chilly by comparison. SAN FRANCISCO — Cornerback Carlos Rogers is returning to the San Francisco 49ers just as he had hoped — and bringing him back keeps one of the NFLs top defences intact heading into 2012. Its clear the 49ers are working furiously at building another team to contend for a shot at the Super Bowl. Rogers has agreed on a $31.3 million, four-year contract, a person with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed Wednesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had yet to formally announce the deal. Rogers still needs to travel to the Bay Area in order to sign, and that could take a couple of days. The 30-year-old Rogers and safety Dashon Goldson shared the team lead with six interceptions each last season for the NFC West champion 49ers. Rogers had said he wanted to stay put with the Niners on a long-term deal. “Im excited about all the moves they made, especially keeping the defence the same,” Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore said Wednesday in a phone interview from Miami. “It was one of the best defences last year. If they come back and play together they can be even better. Were going to be a good team.” Its been quite the week for the 49ers, who are gearing up for another playoff run after losing 20-17 in overtime of the NFC championship game to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants. On Monday, San Francisco signed wide receiver Randy Moss after he spent 2011 out of football, then brought in cornerback Perrish Cox on Tuesday to join a talented secondary that also includes safety Donte Whitner. Gore is confident that the combination of Moss, Michael Crabtree and tight end Vernon Davis will open up the field and keep defences guessing. “Signing Randy Moss is really big for us. People have to respect him because of what hes done in this league as one of the best receivers aand a future Hall of Famer,” Gore said.dddddddddddd "Its going to be big. Especially when youve got Vernon Davis, Crabtree, Randy Moss, players who can make plays, that should be easy on me. Moss vowed to be a positive influence despite his reputation for taking plays off and not going hard in practice. Gore isnt worried about Moss disrupting a strong chemistry. “I think he will (fit in). I know Coach (Jim) Harbaugh and (general manager) Trent Baalke, they have a great eye for talent. If they made that choice, I think thats great,” Gore said. The team is still working to re-sign quarterback Alex Smith, with the sides saying the 2005 No. 1 overall draft pick was weighing a three-year offer. Smiths comeback season in 2011 under former NFL quarterback Harbaugh proved pivotal to the team ending an eight-year drought without a playoff berth or winning record. Smith took his share of boos and criticism during his initial six up-and-down seasons in the league. The 49ers and Smith made it clear they wanted to get something done during the off-season to keep Smith with his only NFL franchise. Smith is represented by Tom Condon and CAA Sports, and Condon is also working to get Peyton Manning signed with a new team — so there is some thinking that might happen before Smith re-signs. Condon and others in his agency havent responded to multiple messages seeking an update on negotiations. “Alex, hes a tough guy. I like him a lot, especially with all the stuff he went through and getting put in the situations Coach Harbaugh put him in and believing in him,” Gore said. “He got the chance he really never had there from an offensive standpoint. It showed he can play ball. He went through a whole lot, man. I think Alex is going to take his game to a whole other level, especially coming off the year he just had.” ’ ’ ’

The Vancouver Canucks are without the services of Roberto Luongo for over a week. Canucks general manager Mike Gillis told the Vancouver Province that the All-Star goalie is expected to be out a week to 10 days with a suspected groin injury. He left a December 22 win over the Winnipeg Jets early after feeling discomfort. Rookie back-up Eddie Lack will shoulder the load in Luongos absence starting with Sunday night when the Canucks visit the Calgary Flames. Goaltender Joacim Eriksson has also been called up from the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League. In 32 games this season, the 34-year-old Luongo is 16-9-6 with a 2.24 goals against average and a .920 save percentage. The Canadian and American leaders both announced Wednesday that they will not be attending the Games, prompting speculation of an international snub over Russias gay-rights record. Harpers office announced the news discreetly, in a late-evening email. The message from the Prime Ministers Office noted that Harper has gone to only one Olympics since he took office, and that lone exception was for obvious reasons. “He normally does not attend (Vancouver was an exception because Canada was the host),” a prime ministerial spokesman said in an email. That news came several hours after the United States delivered a more conspicuous message. For the first time since 2000, the U.S. will not send a president, former president, first lady or vice-president to the Games. Also, the small U.S. delegation for the opening and closing ceremonies will include two openly gay athletes. Those athletes, tennis legend Billie Jean King and hockey player Caitlin Cahow, will be joined by figure skater Brian Boitano, former cabinet secretary Janet Napolitano, a presidential advisor, and the U.S. ambassador to Russia. An Obama spokesman was asked at the daily White House press briefing whether the delegation was intended to make a political point. While he said such a message would not be sent “through this manner,” his response also repeatedly referred to “diversity” — a word Obamas spokesman mentioned seven times in his answers. “This delegation represents the diversity that is the United States,” said presidential spokesman Jay Carney. “Every member of that delegation is extremely accomplished, either in government service or in civic activism or, most especially, in sports. So hes very proud of the delegation and the diversity it represents. And he looks forward, as every American does, to the competition and to the effort that American athletes will demonstrate when they compete in Sochi.” Obamas spokespeople said his schedule would not allow him to attend. However, Carney also added that the president has been clear that he “finds it offensive, the anti-LGBT legislation in Russia,” as well as the harassment caused to those who protest corruption there. Russia has come under fierce criticism for passing national laws banning “gay propaganda.” For its part, the Canadian government said its delegation choices will be announced soon. When asked whether they should be interpreted as carrying a human-rights message, Harper spokesman Jason MacDonald replied: “No. Were not in a position to comment on who our reppresentatives will be.dddddddddddd” France and Germany are among the other countries who will not send their presidents to Sochi for the Games. Earlier this month, IOC President Thomas Bach said Russia would set up public protest zones in Sochi for “people who want to express their opinion or want to demonstrate for or against something.” Meanwhile, the IOC approved a letter going out to athletes reminding them to refrain from protests or political gestures during the Sochi Games — reiterating Rule 50 of the Olympic charter, which forbids demonstrations on Olympic grounds. Bach had previously said hed received assurances from Russian President Vladimir Putin that gays will not be discriminated against in Sochi. On Thursday, Putin reiterated those assurances, saying it is Russias responsibility as host of the Games to ensure equal conditions for all the athletes. “The main thing for us is the good organization of these competitions, the creation of equal terms for all athletes,” he told a Moscow news conference. But the Russian law has raised questions about what could happen to athletes who wear pins or badges or carry flags supporting gay rights. The U.S. Olympic Committee made no comment about the sexual orientation of the delegation Wednesday. In a nod to its disapproval of the law, however, the USOC recently revised its non-discrimination policy to include sexual orientation. Earlier this year, Obama rejected the idea of a U.S. boycott of the Olympics despite a number of differences with Russia, including the anti-gay law. Wednesdays announcement, however, represented an unmistakable break with recent precedent: In Vancouver, Vice-President Joe Biden led the delegation, and in 2012, first lady Michelle Obama held the honour. The announcement prompted an enthusiastic response from the Human Rights Campaign, which recently sent a letter urging Obama to include gays and lesbians in the U.S. delegation. “Its a positive sign to see openly gay representatives in the delegation,” said spokesman Michael Cole-Schwartz. “Hopefully it sends a message to the Russian people and the rest of the world that the United States values the civil and human rights of LGBT people.” King made an explicit point about human rights Wednesday, saying she was “deeply honoured” to be named to the delegation. “I am equally proud to stand with the members of the LGBT community in support of all athletes who will be competing in Sochi and I hope these Olympic Games will indeed be a watershed moment for the universal acceptance of all people,” she said. King, who won Wimbledon 20 times in singles and doubles categories, will attend the opening ceremony. ’ ’ ’

SPIELBERG, Austria - Red Bulls hopes for a triumph on its home circuit were dampened Friday as Mercedes regained its dominance in Formula One, clearly setting the pace on the opening day of practice for the Austrian Grand Prix. With Daniel Ricciardos maiden victory in Canada two weeks ago, Red Bull ended a six-race winning streak by Mercedes but the Australian driver and his teammate Sebastian Vettel did not come close to matching their rivals speed on the Red Bull Ring. Lewis Hamilton beat teammate Nico Rosberg to the fastest time in the second practice. Hamilton completed his best lap on the 4.3-kilometre (2.7-mile) track in 1 minute, 9.542 seconds, topping Rosberg by 0.377. Ferraris Fernando Alonso was almost a second off the lead in third. Vettel came sixth, more than 1.4 seconds behind Hamilton, while Ricciardo posted the eighth fastest time. Mercedes also came 1-2 in the opening practice, with Rosberg beating Hamilton by 0.140. “Its so close between the two of us,” Rosberg said about the fight with Hamilton for pole position. “Im hoping we will still have the edge on everybody else. That seems to be the case today.” However, Hamilton said he wouldnt mind if Rosberg started in front of him on Sunday. “Hunting definitely brings out the better side,” the 2008 F1 champion said. “When you are in front, you feel vulnerable and any mistake you make you are going to be caught.” In the morning session, Ricciardo and Vettel came only 13th and 15th respectively. “We clearly did better in the afternoon,” Vettel said. “We are not there where we want to be when it comes to speed … but it will be warmer on Saturday and Sunday and I think that will bring us closer.” In the first session, Vettel brought his car back to the garage undamaged following a spectacular incident in the final turn. He came off the track and spun twice on the grass before the car came to a standstill on the track again. “That wasnt planned of course,” the four-time champion said. “I went too wide and the wet grass was slippery.” Ricciardo also spun on the same spot shortly afterward, prompting team boss Christian Horner to joke “they were just warming up the crowd.” “We are trying to find out the limit, and both just came on the grass,” said Horner, adding the track was still lacking grip during the first session. “There was also a little bit of rain in the air. Thankfully everything is fine.” Rosberg quit his first practice after 19 laps with a minor problem to his hybrid engine, enabling his technicians to fix the problem in time for the afternoons session. The German, however, couldnt keep up with Hamilton this time and didnt hide his anger as he was unaware over engine tests his team was applying on his car toward the end of the second session. “I was suddenly losing power and asked over the radio what was happening,” Rosberg said. “Only then they told me they had changed my engine settings.” Rosberg leads Hamilton in the drivers standings by 140-118 points going into Sundays race, the first GP in Austria since 2003. Most of the 22 drivers knew the track only from computer simulation. Alonso is one of just four drivers who raced on the track before, alongside McLarens Jenson Button, Ferraris Kimi Raikkonen and Williams Felipe Massa. The track is one of the shortest on the F1 calendar and features fast straights and only nine turns. Weather conditions could become an issue in the race as strong winds in the second practice Friday caused several drivers problems, especially on the third and eighth turns. The second session was considerably faster than the first as temperatures went up and teams were able to test their so-called supersoft tires, which helped cut lap times by approximately 0.6 seconds. The third practice is scheduled for Saturday, followed by the qualifying. . Blake Griffin had 27 points and eight rebounds, Chris Paul added 19 points — including a go-ahead layup in the final minute — and the Clippers beat the Hawks 109-108 on Saturday night for their season-high seventh straight win. “In the locker room, I almost felt like we lost the game, because we expect a lot from themselves,” Paul said. CLEVELAND — Sitting in the last chair on Indianas bench, David West stared straight ahead, unable to look at the court. As the final seconds ticked off the clock on another disheartening loss, West seemed dazed. The Pacers promising season is unraveling Dion Waiters scored 19 points, Luol Deng added 15 and the Cleveland Cavaliers kept their playoff push going with a 90-76 win Sunday over the skidding Pacers, who are losing their grip on the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. Tristan Thompson had 16 rebounds as the Cavs snapped a nine-game losing streak against Indiana. Cleveland came in three games behind slumping, idle Atlanta for the conferences final playoff spot. With seven games left — six against teams with losing records — the Cavs still have a chance. The Pacers, meanwhile, are falling apart. They lost their fifth straight road game and now lead Miami by one game for the Easts top record and home-court advantage throughout the post-season. Since beating the Heat at home last week, Indiana has lost to Washington and Cleveland. “Were losing games at an alarming rate to teams that are inferior to us,” said West, who picked up a technical four in the fourth quarter. “We cant figure out a way to perform better. Weve done what you do. Weve had team meetings. Weve had players-only meetings. Weve had players and the coaches (meetings). Were kind of looking for answers right now, and things dont get any easier.” Paul George scored 15 and West 14 for Indiana, which fell behind by 21 in the fourth quarter. Once thought to be a lock to make the conference finals, the Pacers are in disarray as they enter the final weeks of the regular season. “Were lost right now,” guard Lance Stephenson said. “We just have to play through it.” Indianas offence lacks rhythm, and other than their win over the Heat, the Pacers arent showing the same intensity or energy that has made them one of the NBAs top teams. “Were all frustrated,” coach Frank Vogel said. “I think were playing against ourselves. Its a level of play that were trying to reach that were not close to where we need to be.” The Pacers trailed the Cavs by 13 at halftime, and after pulling within six in the third, Indiana let the Cavs goo on a 14-5 run, capped by Jarrett Jacks 3-pointer that made it 69-54.dddddddddddd. Indiana never got close enough to threaten the Cavs in the fourth, and Vogel pulled West and his other starters for the final 1:20 — a surprising sign of surrender. Midway through the quarter, West was assessed the technical and a flagrant-1 after a mix-up with spunky Cavs rookie guard Matthew Dellavedova and Cleveland centre Spencer Hawes. Theres still time to get things fixed, but the Pacers have lost nine of 15 since March 4 and it wont get any easier with San Antonio coming in for a visit on Monday. The Spurs have won 17 straight. “Weve got to get to playing better,” West said. “Weve got eight games left. Its going to get real. We dont want to be disappointed in April and May. Weve got to figure something out. Everybody, individually, all of us have to look at ourselves and figure out what we can do to right this ship.” The Cavs, on the other hand, are peaking at the right time. They won for the fourth time in five games despite playing without All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, who missed his eighth straight with an injured biceps. Irving could be back this week, when the Cavs, who are 14-12 since Feb. 5, are at Orlando before a showdown on Friday against the Hawks, who have lost six in a row. “Our guys just keep fighting,” Cavs coach Mike Brown said. Cleveland played the second half without centre Anderson Varejao, who strained his right shoulder. The Cavs said their leading rebounder will be re-evaluated Monday. The Pacers, who shot just 37 per cent, lacked any offensive cohesion and left Cleveland searching for answers. “A lot of our guys are out of rhythm right now,” Vogel said. “Weve got to figure it out.” NOTES: The Pacers have scored less than 80 points in four of their past five games. … Irving was scheduled to be re-evaluated Sunday by team physician Dr. Richard Parker. Its not yet known when, or if, Irving will play again. … Clevelands schedule couldnt be better over the next seven games for its playoff drive. The Cavs will play just one team — Brooklyn — with a winning record and thats in the season finale. … George is shooting just 31 per cent (40 of 130) in his last eight games. ’ ’ ’

WASHINGTON — Raise your hand if you had Greg Oden as the Miami Heat MVP. Or if you had any inkling the Washington Wizards were capable of taking a 34-point lead against the two-time defending champs. Or if you thought LeBron James and Co. would follow a White House visit by dropping their third straight against the heart of the middling Eastern Conference. Oden played his first game in more than four years Wednesday night, and that might have been the only positive for the Heat. He played all of 8 minutes, 24 seconds and made a pair of dunks to help start a rally that had loads of promise — until it fell flat in the fourth quarter of a 114-97 loss to the Wizards on Wednesday night. “They came here, whatever. Went to the White House, whatever,” Wizards forward Nene said. “We just came here to play.” John Wall scored 25 points, and Bradley Beal and Nene had 19 apiece to lead seven players in double figures for the Wizards, who had their lead cut to nine before closing with a 17-9 run. They had dropped seven of eight at the Verizon Center, having blown a fourth-quarter lead to the Houston Rockets on Saturday in a game twice delayed because water was leaking onto the court through a hole in the roof. Chris Bosh scored 26 points, and James had 25 for the Heat, who had been off since Friday and therefore had time to be feted by President Barack Obama on Tuesday for winning a second consecutive NBA title. For one half, the Wizards made Miami look like a team that will never again be invited to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington went on a 20-0 run in the first quarter. James had three of the Heats six first-quarter turnovers. The Wizards, with their first sellout crowd of the season, taunted the Heat fans in attendance with the “Bandwagon Cam” that mocked those wearing the visitors colours. Washington didnt even commit a foul until the 8:48 mark of the second quarter. “They was playing at another speed,” James said. “They was playing at, like, 15 and we was playing at, like, seven.” James paused, then corrected himself. “Dont even gonna give us that much of a credit,” he added. “We was playing at, like, five.” James said he even lost his voice during the second or third quarter. He was still hoarse after the game. “We love adversity more than anything. Were definitely at that point,” he said with a smile as his voice cracked. “As you can tell, my damn voice is gone. I gotta try to find it, too.” At least the Heat found Oden, who stepped onto the court for his first regular-season game since Dec. 5, 2009. He scored six points, going 2 for 3 from the field with a pair of dunks. He made both of his free throws and grabbed two rebounds. It was Oden, of all people, who helped get the Heat going after the Wizards led 43-18 at the end of the first quarter and 64-30 during the second. Wearing No. 20 and with both knees heavily wrapped, he entered with 6:03 remaining in the first half and made an immediate impact: an offensive rebound, a dunk and a foul in 30 seconds. By halftime, the score was 69-48. Oden also started the second half and played four minutes before sitting for the rest of the game. “In a short amount of minutes tonight,” James said, “he was pretty good for us.” It was Odens first appearance in a regular-season game since fracturing his left kneecap while playing for the Portland Trail Blazers against the Rockets. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft also missed what would have been his rookie year because of a right knee injury. He has had three microfracture surgeries on his knees. Oden said the Heat have “come up with something to keep me playing, not just to get me out there and get injured.” “So this is the plan and its got me this far,” he said. “It got me in the game.” Norris Coles jumper pulled the Heat within single digits — 84-75 — with less than a minute to go in the third, but they never got any closer than nine. The Wizards had nine turnovers in the third quarter but only one in the fourth, and an alley-oop from Wall to Martell Webster put Washington up by 17 with 3:02 to play. “We knew they were going to make a run,” Washington coach Randy Wittman said. “Thats still the best team.” NOTES: The Wizards began the day 1-14 against teams with winning records. … The Heat hadnt lost three in row since the 2012 Eastern Conference finals against the Boston Celtics. Their last regular-season three-game skid was Jan. 10-13, 2012. … The loss ended the Heats 22-game winning streak vs. Southeast Division opponents. … Miami played without F Chris Andersen, who “landed awkwardly on his knee,” according to coach Erik Spoelstra. G Mario Chalmers (strained right Achilles) missed his fourth straight. F Shane Battier was in the starting lineup after missing five games with a strained left quadriceps. G Dwyane Wade was back after resting his sore knees for one game. … Washington shot a season-high 55 per cent. Buckeyes sophomore forward Jared Sullinger missed the game with back spasms, but that didnt stop Ohio State (8-0), as Deshaun Thomas dropped 11 points to go with five rebounds, while Scott Shannon and Jordan Sibert contributed seven points apiece. Left guard Clint Boling tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a 17-10 victory in San Diego on Sunday. The Bengals put him on injured reserve Tuesday. ORLANDO, Fla. — At this point in the season, the Cleveland Cavaliers are hoping to make one last run at the playoffs and the Orlando Magic are looking for luck in the NBA draft lottery. Both improved their chances of reaching those goals Wednesday night as the Cavaliers beat the Magic 119-98 behind 26 points from Dion Waiters and 20 each from Spencer Hawes and Tristan Thompson. The easy win moved the Cavaliers within two games of New York and Atlanta for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Cavs play at Atlanta Friday night. “This was a big game for us, but every game is big because of the position weve put ourselves in,” Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. “There is nothing tricky that we have to do. We just have to out and play hard and give ourselves a chance.” Waiters shot 10 for 15 from the field, including 3 for 3 on 3-pointers. “Weve still got a chance, we just need to take full advantage of it,” he said. “We came in knowing we should get a win, but every game is hard. We have no choice at this point. We control our own destiny. Everybody knows what is at stake. We just have to stay focused.” It helped the Cavaliers that All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving returned with a thump in his step after missing the last eight games with a torn bicep muscle. Irving had 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds in a seemless transition from the bench to the court. “Kyrie came in and got right in step with us,” Brown said. “He helped us get the ball up the floor quickly and get into our attack. He gave us another weapon with a very high skill level.” The Magic had little to be satisfied with other than solidifying their lottery spot with the third-worst record in the NBA. The Magic gave up 70 points in the first half, the best half all season for Cleveland and the most points Orlando has allowed in a half this year. “There is going to be a game in the course of the year where you just dont have it and when its coupled with a team like the Cavs who had it … it just wasnt a good mix,” Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. “Some days, its just not your day.” The Magic placed only one starter, Maurice Harkless, in douuble figures and he had 10 points.dddddddddddd Rookie Victor Oladipo led Orlando with 16 points, Doron Lamb had 14, Tobias Harris 11 and ETwaun Moore 10, all off the bench. “Terrible, terrible game,” Harris said. “Its not how we wanted to play and that shows us that there is no effort.” Every Cleveland player in uniform scored as the Cavs shot 60.5 per cent in the first half and 57.7 per cent for the game in rolling over a defenceless Magic team that lost its second straight. Cleveland was 9 for 18 from beyond the 3-point line, most of them wide-open looks as Orlando struggled with defensive rotations the entire game. Cleveland had four of the five starters already in double figures by halftime. Hawes was 6 for 8 in the first two periods, including 4 for 5 on 3-pointers on his way to 18 points. Thompson had 14, Irving 13 and Waiters 10 as the Cavaliers starters combined to hit 24 of 33 shots (72.7 per cent) in the first two quarters. Deng was the only starter not in double figures, but still shot 4 for 5. The Magic, by contrast, didnt have a player score more than six points in the first half. Orlando had 11 turnovers that Cleveland turned into 16 points. The Magic trailed 49-42 after Oladipos 3-pointer with 6:11 left in the second quarter, but got only one field goal the rest of the half and were outscored 21-6 as Cleveland rolled to a 70-47 halftime lead. The closest Orlando got in the second half was 17 when Arron Afflalos 3 with 4:11 left in the third quarter made it 82-65. Afflalo, the Magics leading scorer this season, finished with seven points. Cleveland responded with a 10-0 run that started with a floater in the lane by Jack and ended with two free throws by Thompson to make it 92-65. Cleveland led by as many 28 points and cruised through the fourth quarter with little effort. NOTES: Cavs C Anderson Varajeo sat out the game with a sore shoulder. … Magic C Nikola Vucevic, who had three straight games scoring 20-plus points for the first time all season coming into the game, scored only seven. … Cleveland has beaten Orlando seven straight times. … The Magic are 1-18 this season when teams shoot over 50 per cent. Cleveland shot 57.7 per cent in the game. ’ ’ ’

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Think of the Super Bowl and you think of excess: Big money, big parties, big crowds and an even bigger mess left behind when the circus leaves town. Well, at least the messy part is getting smaller. Beginning in the 1990s, the National Football League has sought to gradually reduce the footprint left behind by the Big Game, and the league is taking steps to make the Feb. 2 Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium the most environmentally friendly yet, from planting trees to offset carbon emissions to composting food waste to using biodiesel to power generators. “We try and stay ahead of the curve,” said Jack Groh, a consultant who directs the NFLs environmental programs. “We try and push the envelope every year.” Most of the attention focused on this years Super Bowl is, understandably, on the challenges of holding it outdoors in the Northeast for the first time. Another, less-celebrated first: MetLife Stadium will compost food waste on game day, the first time thats happened at a Super Bowl. Its not new for the stadium. Dave Duernberger, MetLife Stadiums vice-president of facilities, said the stadium produced 195 tons of food waste for composting last year, up from 153 tons the year before. Duernberger expects about seven or eight tons to be generated during the Super Bowl, which will go into a giant compactor and then be trucked to a local facility for processing. The end product can be used for landscaping. Another innovation is the use of biodiesel fuel processed from waste cooking oil. According to Groh, a biodiesel mix will be used in generators that will power Super Bowl Boulevard, the 13-block party on Broadway that will feature entertainment and a giant toboggan slide, as well as generators that are augmenting the power supply on the MetLife Stadium grounds. The head of Public Service Electric & Gas, the utility that provides power to the complex, has estimated that it will take about 18 megawatts of electricity to power the entire complex for the game, or what would be needed to power 12,000 homes. Of that, PSE&G president Ralph LaRossa said as much as six megawatts could be provided by the generators. Greening the Super Bowl has been a passion project for Groh, who started out as a journalist before forming an environmental communications firm with his wife. He did his first work for the NFL at the 1994 Super Bowl in Atlanta, at a time when the simple recycling of plastic bottles and cans at stadiums was a significant step forward. He continuously seeks out new ways to wring as much value out of things that normally would be discarded. For example, in the weeks leading up to this years Super Bowl, the NFL sponsored e-waste recycling events in New York and New Jersey that collected 9,000 pounds of old phones, computers and other gadgets, according to Verizon, which partnered in the program. Tens of thousands of trees have been planted in the metropolitan area to offset carbon emissions created by the game, Groh said. After the game, the league will donate several miles of fabric signage to nonprofits or other groups for repurposing. In New Orleans, Groh said, local designers took the fabric and used it to make purses, dresses, shower curtains, beanbag chairs, tote bags and wallets. “Our primary objective is to see that it doesnt go to a landfill,” he said. The efforts have drawn a thumbs-up from the New Jersey chapter of the Sierra Club, whose president, Jeff Tittel, called the programs “good for the environment and good for the NFLs image.” “The NFL is doing a better job reducing greenhouse gases and offsetting carbon than the state of New Jersey is,” said Tittel, a consistent critic of Gov. Chris Christies environmental policies. “Thats the irony, they understand climate change better than our governor does.” . Spieth again showed game well beyond his 20 years with a 9-under 63 on the North Course, giving him a one-shot lead over Stewart Cink going into the weekend at the Farmers Insurance Open.Roberto Luongo will looking to erase some painful memories as he leads the Vancouver Canucks against the Bruins tonight. Luongo will be making his first start at the TD Garden since Game 6 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final when he surrendered three first period goals in a potential Cup-clinching game for the Canucks. The Canucks will try to avoid matching their longest winless streak of the season on Tuesday night as they visit the Atlantic Division-leading Bruins. The Canucks have lost four straight in regulation, one setback shy of their longest stretch without a win this season done twice before. Vancouver was able to earn some points over those earlier droughts, going 0-3-2 from Nov. 9-19 and 0-2-3 from Dec. 30-Jan. 7. Vancouver is holding on to the eighth spot in the Western Conference by just a single point over the Phoenix Coyotes and were unable to get a spark from the return of both coach John Tortorella and captain Henrik Sedin on Monday. Tortorella returned to the bench after serving a 15-day suspension for his actions in a game versus the Calgary Flames on Jan. 18, missing six games. Sedin was absent for each one due to a rib injury that halted his consecutive games played streak at 679 and was held off the scoresheet in last nights 2-0 setback to the Detroit Red Wings. Eddie Lack made 28 saves in the second contest of a five-game road trip, but Detroit got eight saves from Jonas Gustavsson in the first period before he exited due to dizziness. Jimmy Howard stopped all 16 Vancouver shots he faced the rest of the way. “We cant buy a win right now,” Lack said. “Im trying to do my job and keep us in every game. Its tough.” After Detroit scored the games first goal early in the second period, David Booth was hooked on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. However, Howard turned his chance aside to leave the Canucks and Tortorella frustrated. “We need to change the complexion of our hockey club, either with our play or with different people, because we looked like a slow hockey team tonight,” noted Tortorella. “Were going to keep on banging away to try and get better, but its very frustrating to see the same looks. It worries me. Ill leave it at that.” One change that could happen tonight is the insertion of defenseman Raphael Diaz into the lineup. He was acquiredd in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens on Monday for forward Dale Weise.dddddddddddd Diaz could make his debut with the Canucks tonight after notching 11 assists and a minus-4 rating in 43 games with the Habs this season. Hell help fill a void on the back end left by injuries to Kevin Bieksa (foot) and Christopher Tanev (thumb). The Bruins will host the Canucks to close a four-game homestand and are 6-1-1 in their last eight games. That stretch includes a disappointing and lackluster 4-1 loss to Montreal on Thursday, but Boston rebounded to secure a 4-0 triumph over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. Chad Johnson made 22 saves in his first shutout of the season and second of his career, while Boston scored three times in the third period to break open a close game. Dougie Hamilton started the burst 6:43 into the frame before Carl Soderberg and Torey Krug followed with goals. David Krejci also lit the lamp and Zdeno Chara added a pair of assists for the Bruins, who posted 19 of their 41 shots in the third period. “Well, I think so — a much better game tonight in all aspects of it,” said Bruins head coach Claude Julien comparing the game to Thursdays loss to Montreal. “Thought that goal by Dougie kind of made everybody relax a little bit more and our game seemed to get better after that too.” Boston leads the Tampa Bay Lightning by four points for the top spot in the division and will have Chara in the lineup tonight for the last time before the Olympic break. The hulking defenseman will not play on Thursday in St. Louis or Saturday versus Ottawa as he had earlier been selected to carry Slovakias flag during the Opening Ceremonies on Friday for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. The Bruins have lost three of their last four versus the Canucks, including a 6-2 setback on Dec. 14 that marked the first time the two clubs met in Vancouver since Boston won Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals. Tuukka Rask got the start for the Bruins, but was pulled early in the second period after allowing four goals on 23 shots. He fell to 0-1-1 with a 3.38 goals against average in his career versus the Canucks. Sedin had a goal and an assist in the victory, while Roberto Luongo posted 39 saves to improve to 12-10-3 in his career versus Boston with a 2.38 GAA and four shutouts. ’ ’ ’

DALLAS — Ricky Rubio hasnt given up on the idea of Minnesota making the playoffs. The case is a little easier to make after the Timberwolves avoided what would have been a disastrous loss in Dallas. Rubio had a triple-double, Kevin Love scored the last of his 35 points with the go-ahead basket late in overtime, and the Timberwolves hung on for a 123-122 victory over the Mavericks on Wednesday night after blowing several leads. Minnesota broke a six-game stretch of alternating wins and losses with a second straight victory to move two games over .500 for the first time since Nov. 23. The Timberwolves (34-32) are still 5 1/2 games behind Dallas and Memphis for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with 16 games to go. But at least they didnt lose after squandering a 22-point lead in the first half and a 13-point edge with 7 minutes to go. “It was a big game against a tough team who is fighting for the playoffs, too,” said Rubio, who had 22 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds for his third career triple-double. “We want to try to catch up to them.” Dirk Nowitzki scored 27 for Dallas and put the Mavericks ahead with a fadeaway over Love with 33 seconds left in overtime before Love scored on a jump hook with 17 seconds to go. Nowitzki missed on another try over Love in the final seconds as the Mavericks saw a three-game winning streak end and missed a chance to move a season-high 15 games over .500. “This is a tough one,” said Nowitzki, who had his second straight tough shooting night at 11 of 27. “This feels like a playoff loss. It really does. I dont even know what to say.” Monta Ellis scored the last 12 Dallas points of regulation on a three-point play and three consecutive 3-pointers, the last one giving the Mavericks their first lead since early in the first quarter at 113-111. Rubio answered with a pair of free throws for the tie with 50 seconds left. Nowitzki missed a 3-pointer to finish his 0-for-5 shooting in the fourth quarter, but Kevin Martin missed from just inside the arc and Robbie Hummel missed from just outside it for Minnesota. Dallas Devin Harris was short on a mid-court heave at the buzzer in regulation. “We knew they were going to go on a run,” said Love, who was 11 of 20 from the field and 11 of 14 from the line. “We will take the win, whether it is in regulation or overtime.” Nowitzki hit his first shot of overtime from the baseline and added a 3-pointer for a 120-115 lead, but the Timberwolves went back in front by a point on a reverse layup from Rubio and four free throws from Love. All five Minnesota starters were in double figures. Martin scored 19, Corey Brewer had 11 of his 13 points during Minnesotas fast start in the first quarter and Gorgui Dieng had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Former Dallas guard J.J. Barea had 15 points. Ellis finished with 22 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter and overtime. Shawn Marion had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Sam Dalembert had 14 boards. Early in the game, the Dallas defence didnt look anything like a unit that had held consecutive teams to less than 40-per cent shooting. Minnesota was at 69 per cent after Dieng hit a hook shot to give the Timberwolves their biggest lead at 50-28 early in the second quarter. The Mavericks had six of their 16 turnovers in the first quarter, and several led to breakaway baskets for Brewer. “They were aggressive. We were sloppy,” Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. “The first quarter was really the biggest factor in the game.” The Mavericks forced four straight misses to spark a 24-5 run that got them back in the game. Nowitzki opened the spurt with a jumper, and Jae Crowder finished it with a dunk after a steal by Jose Calderon to make it 55-52. NOTES: Rubio had seven assists in the first quarter, one more than Dallas as a team. Minnesota had 12 for the quarter. … Ellis was called for a technical after getting his fourth foul in the third quarter. Referee Monty McCutchen screamed at Ellis that he had been warned four times as Ellis walked to the Dallas bench. . Showing more spark after not taking enough challenging shots on goal in their 1-0 loss Friday night, the Bruins had 18 shots in the first period after managing just 25 in the entire opener. Luke Glendening cut Bostons lead to 2-1 at 13:20 of the second period before Milan Lucic scored late in the second and Zdeno Chara added a power-play goal early in the third. Down on the lower level, Hall of Famer Walter Jones posed for pictures with exuberant fans. This celebration in the wee hours of Monday morning was what Pete Carroll envisioned when he arrived in Seattle in January 2010 and was finally given the full say over an NFL franchise in the hopes of replicating at the professional level what he was able to accomplish in college. Celebrating was standard practice when Carroll was at USC. But the party that followed Sundays 43-8 blowout of Denver that gave Seattle its first NFL title topped all those previous celebrations. It may just be the beginning for the Seahawks. “This is exactly what we envisioned from day one. We were going to be right here and win this football game — and it just happened to be in New York. which makes it even more special — in the fashion that we were able,” Carroll said. “We deserved it and we earned it because this is exactly what weve been preparing for, and we expected it. That may sound cocky. That may sound arrogant. But its a mentality you cant get in one week.” Seattles coronation was the culmination of an overhaul that Carroll and general manager John Schneider embarked upon when they took control of the Seahawks. Nearly 1,000 roster moves later, they could finally take the ultimate satisfaction in what they had created: the envy of the NFL. The Seahawks are mean and talented on defence. They have one of the most dynamic young players in the game in quarterback Russell Wilson. And the surrounding cast complements him well. There is very little indication this will be a one-year flash. “One of the things that happens every so often is teams have a big fallout after they win the Super Bowl,” Carroll said. “Were not in that situation.” Seattles title will be remembered for a dominating defence that will be regarded among the best in league history. Richard Shermans play at cornerback — and sometimes his mouth — drew the attention but that defence was far more than Sherman and his “Legion of Boom” teammates in the secondary. Linebacker Bobby Wagner was even better in his second season, while Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith was called upon to play different positions throughout the season. The signings of Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett on the defensive line, and the re-signing of Clinton McDonnald after Week 1, gave the Seahawks the deepest defensive line rotation in the league, all with plenty of energy to chase Colin Kaepernick in the NFC title game and harass Peyton Manning in the Super Bowl.dddddddddddd Offensively, the Seahawks were without their top two wide receivers for most of the season between Percy Harvins preseason hip surgery and Sidney Rices midseason knee injury. But Harvin showed just why the Seahawks made the investment with his 87-yard kickoff return touchdown that was essentially the final blow in the Super Bowl. Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin believed they were disrespected all season and were intent on proving critics wrong. For the most part, they did, while Jermaine Kearse continued to play the role of another undrafted gem discovered by Schneider. The offensive line missed both starting tackles — Breno Giacomini and Russell Okung — for more than half the regular season due to injuries but managed. And Marshawn Lynch continued to go “Beast Mode” at just the right times. Seattle should be able to keep its core together but there will be difficult decisions to make. There are key free agents, including Baldwin and Tate. There are also potential salary cap decisions to be made with players like Rice, Zach Miller, Chris Clemons, Brandon Mebane and Red Bryant. Then there are the two looming extensions that could get done this off-season — Earl Thomas and Sherman. Both players can be extended before the start of next season, but the likelihood is that Seattle tries to get a deal done with Thomas first and then see if an extension will work for Sherman. So far, Sherman has been the ultimate bargain for Seattle, scheduled to make less than $700,000 in base salary next season. Thomas and Sherman are entering the final year of their rookie contracts in 2014 and with both now two-time All-Pro selections, each is likely due a hefty raise. If Seattle can get both extensions done, it would allow them to focus on Wilson during the 2014-15 off-season when his rookie deal can be redone. “We are looking two to three years ahead so last year we knew we were going to have some things coming and how to handle certain players and to know just where we are headed,” Schneider said recently. “We put different models together. Matt Thomas does a phenomenal job with it. Figure out the best way to navigate it. They are really good problems to have.” ’ ’ ’

Brazilian international goalkeeper Julio Cesar is set to become the next big name signing for Toronto FC, TSN can confirm. The 34-year-old is expected to complete a loan move to Toronto from English Championship team Queens Park Rangers in the next few days. Cesar is a former teammate of Toronto FC head coach Ryan Nelsen. The two played together at QPR. Current Toronto FC goalkeeper Joe Bendik responded to the news on Friday night saying via Twitter: “A hit to my pride today but luckily Ive got tons of it! Going to take in everything I can from a top shelf GK to better my abilities.” Cesar previously spent seven seasons in Italy with Inter Milan where he won five league titles and the 2010 Champions League. He has played 77 times for Brazil. The veteran goalkeeper has been replaced as first-choice at QPR this season and is keen to get action leading up to this summers World Cup in Brazil. Cesar is the latest addition to a club that has transformed its squad in the offseason with the signings of England international striker Jermain Defoe, United States midfielder Michael Bradley and Brazilian forward Gilberto, as well as experienced MLS talent such as Dwayne De Rosario, Justin Morrow and Jackson. The Cesar signing was first reported in Brazilian media on Friday morning, but sources have now confirmed to TSN that the deal is currently being finalized and could be completed early next week. The Redskins coach announced Wednesday that he was benching the star quarterback for the rest of the season. Kirk Cousins will start, and Griffin will be the inactive No. 3 quarterback behind Rex Grossman. Shanahan said he is benching Griffin to keep the quarterback healthy for the off-season, pointing out the 24 sacks and other hits Griffin has taken over the last five games. He said he ran the idea by owner Dan Snyder and general manager Bruce Allen, and that both offered their support. “Youve got to take a look at the risk and reward,” Shanahan said. “And with Robert I thought that his hits were piling up on him, giving him his toll, and I was afraid that we would set him back.” Shanahan cited the need for Griffin to have a full off-season of development after missing this years workouts while rehabbing from knee surgery. But theres no certainty that Shanahan will be around to coach in the off-season: The Redskins have lost five straight and are 3-10, their third losing season in Shanahans four years in Washington. “I think anytime you have a year left on your contract and you have three wins, thats going to be out there,” Shanahan said Griffin was clearly unhappy with Shanahans move. “I expressed my desire to play,” Griffin said. “Of course I want to be out there and finish the season with my guys, see it through. He explained to me his reasoning, and at the end of the day Coachs decision is what we go with it.” Cousins took the first-team snaps as the team worked out in the indoor practice bubble to prepare for Sundays game against the Atlanta Falcons. Players say Griffin ran the scout team. The benching is the latest twist in a Shanahan-Griffin relationship that has been bordering on contentious since a playoff loss to Seattle last season, when Griffin remained in the game even though he was clearly injured. Shanahan conceded for the first time Wednesday that continuing to play Griffin “cost us the game.” Griffin had reconstructive knee surgery a few days later and missed vital months of developmmental work before returning for Week 1 in September, but he hasnt been the same player that won the leagues Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2012.dddddddddddd With defences taking away the read-option, he has struggled as a drop-back passer, ranking 26th in the NFL in passer rating with 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. However, while Griffin hasnt had the same explosiveness, both he and Shanahan have insisted that the quarterback is medically healthy. Until this week, Shanahan publicly quashed any suggestions about a possible switch, saying Griffin needs as much game experience as possible. Shanahan said Wednesday that he first brought up the idea of benching Griffin last week in a conversation with Snyder, having decided that risk of injury outweighed the reward of experience. Both Griffin and Cousins are second-year players. Cousins played in all or part of four games, including the playoff loss, last season because of various Griffin injuries. Grossman hasnt taken a regular season snap since 2011. In recent days, the open question has been whether Shanahan might resign — and thus forfeit a years salary - or wait to be fired at the end of the season. Theres also the possibility he and Snyder could negotiate a settlement, and that the benching of a healthy franchise player could in some way be Shanahans way of getting some leverage in those talks. “Somebody said, Hey, the reason why youre going with Kirk is youre trying to get fired and get a year left on your contract,” Shanahan said. “If I want to try to get fired, Im not going to call up Dan Snyder and ask his opinion on a player (when) I dont have to. And if he says no, Im not going to go in that direction.” But Shanahan again conceded he might not return for a fifth season. “I dont know until I sit down with Dan,” Shanahan said. "Then well find out what I think. Ill give him my opinions, and hell give me his opinions. Maybe we just hit it off and everything and I get that 12, 15-year contract." “Well, maybe three-year,” he added with a smile. “Whatever it is. Thats where grown men talk at the end of the year and you find out, Hey, whats the best way to go.” ’ ’ ’

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Jon Leuers career night and Ed Davis double-double helped the Memphis Grizzlies fill a void left by two key injuries. Leuer scored a career-high 23 points, Davis added 21 points and 12 rebounds, and the Grizzlies made the best of their makeshift lineup to defeat the Phoenix Suns 110-91 Tuesday night. Leuer and Davis got plenty of playing time because of injuries to front-line starters Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. “When they are out, we just want to fill in for them,” said Davis, who started in Randolphs spot. Leuer, who came off the bench, connected on 10 of 13 shots, Davis made 8 of 11, and seven players finished in double figures for Memphis, which shot 55 per cent from the floor. In addition to a career-high in points, Leuer had three blocks, another career-best, and matched his career-high with nine rebounds. “I think early in the game getting in there and grabbing a few rebounds and knocking my first couple of shots down (helped) and getting some easy baskets,” said Leuer, who entered the game averaging 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds. “You get into a rhythm after that. . Confidence starts to build, and from there on I was just feeling good.” Mike Conley had 18 points and 14 assists for Memphis, which snapped a four-game losing streak at home. Marcus Morris led the Suns with 18 points, Goran Dragic added 16 and Miles Plumlee had 11. Memphis played its second straight game without Randolph, who had ingrown toenail surgery Saturday. Gasol is out indefinitely with a left knee sprain. Kosta Koufos, starting in place of Gasol, finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Tony Allen scored 11 points. Tayshaun Prince and Jerryd Bayless had 10 points each. “The key is to try and spread it around because I cant do it by myself,” Conley said. “Tony (Allen) cant do it by himself. We have to have everybody collectively chip in.” The turnaround in the game came in the second half when Memphis hit two-thirds of its shot and outscored the Suns 64-37. “The second half was terrible,” Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said. “We have to be able to fight over screens. We have to get after it. We let their guy just shove you in the back. If we have no more fight than that, what else can you do?” The Suns carried a 54-46 lead into the break as Morris had 15 points off the Suns bench. Morris connected on 6 of 12 from the field, including 2 of 4 from outside the arc. Conley had 11 to lead the Grizzlies. Memphis heated up in the third, hitting 11 of its first 15 shots to go on a 23-9 run and the Grizzlies outscored Phoenix 36-20 in the third for an 82-74 lead heading to the fourth. Davis had 11 points in the third as Memphis ended up hitting 16 of 23 shots. “It stared in the second half,” Plumlee said of the Suns downfall. “I think we got too relaxed. They turned it up, and thats what happens.” Leuer stayed hot in the final quarter and Memphis lead eventually reached 21 points. “We all have to pick it up from the first guy to the last guy on the bench,” Davis said. “We cant replace Marc, and we cant replace (Randolph), but we all can replace some of the things they do.” NOTES: Memphis was playing its second game in a six-game homestand, the longest of the season. … Memphis guard Tony Allen went to locker room holding his hip after a second-quarter scramble for a loose ball, but returned after intermission and started the second half. … Suns G Eric Bledsoe had nine points, ending his string of 11 straight games in double figures. … The Suns made only seven 3-pointers, snapping a streak of nine straight games with at least eight 3-pointers. … Koufos has recorded double-digit rebounds in each of the four games he has started since the injury to Gasol. A CFL source told TSNs Matthew Scianitti that Smith will re-sign with the Toronto Argonauts. The Toronto Blue Jays will attempt to bounce back, as they begin a three-game set against Cleveland with the struggling Justin Masterson on the mound for the Indians. The Blue Jays lost both installments of their double-header with the Twins on Thursday, falling 7-0 in the early game before suffering a 9-5 setback in the second matchup. Toronto went into the eighth inning of the second half of the doubleheader holding a 5-3 advantage, but the Twins responded with a six-run surge in the bottom part of the inning that put the game out of reach. Torontos bullpen had been one of its major strengths this season, however three relievers combined to walk a franchise-record eight batters and throw three wild pitches in the costly eighth inning on Thursday. “We just couldnt throw strikes, we didnt pitch very good all series,” manager John Gibbons said after the game. “Its cold, OK, but you know what? Its cold for both sides, and if youre ever going to get to October in the playoffs, its going to be cold. We didnt pitch very well. We were in a position to win that one and we coughed it up.” Jose Bautista belted a solo shot and scored twice for the Blue Jays, who went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base. Bautista is pacing the club with six homers, 11 RBI and 14 runs scored, while Melky Cabrera is batting a team-best .301. Torontos poor performance pit it two games back of the AL East-leading Yankees. The Blue Jays will look to bounce back with right-hander Drew Hutchison on the hill. Although he held the Orioles scoreless for six innings in his last appearance, Hutchison took a no-decision due to a lack of run support. He wwill face Masterson, who was expecting to be Clevelands ace once again after recording a team-high 14 wins during a 2013 run to the playoffs.dddddddddddd However, 2014 has been a different story for Masterson and the Indians, who rank 25th in the MLB in ERA (4.35) and 22nd in quality starts with six. Masterson was lucky to avoid a losing decision in his last appearance as he surrendered six runs (five earned) while walking five in just 4 2/3 innings of work versus the White Sox. Masterson seems to believe its only a matter of time before Clevelands starting staff gets back on track. “We just havent been able to get deep into the ballgame,” Masterson said. “I think weve all had glimpses of great things, and then weve kind of gotten unraveled ever so slightly as weve gone along. Again, and you look at it, too, been some tough breaks for other guys. You look at certain plays that go this way or that way and it could be a lot different story.” The Tribe were defeated, 7-5, by Detroit on Thursday to conclude their seven game road swing. Clevelands offense was impressive in the setback. Michael Brantley hit a two-run homer and added a two-run single, while Lonnie Chisenhall went 4-for-4 and David Murphy knocked in Clevelands other run. Chisenhall raised his average to .522 after 23 at-bats in the loss. Jason Kipnis was ejected in the third inning for arguing balls and strikes with the bases loaded for the final out of the third inning. The five Cleveland batters who have faced the 23-year old Hutchison in the past have gone a combined 8-for-13 with one walk against him. The Indians are 3-3 in six games at Progressive Field in 2014. ’ ’ ’

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Even with a two-shot lead going into the final round of a tournament he had won five times, Tiger Woods expected a fight to finish from Zach Johnson. He never could have imagined how Johnson would steal the show at Sherwood. Johnson was four shots behind with eight holes to play against the No. 1 player in the world. He was playing his fourth shot on the par-4 closing hole from 58 yards away in a drop area, figuring his only chance was to get up-and-down for a bogey and hope that Woods couldnt convert a par from a tough spot in the bunker. What unfolded was hard to believe for the largest crowd ever at Sherwood. Johnson holed out with a wedge to make par. Woods hit an exquisite bunker shot to match par and force a playoff. And the final edition of the World Challenge at Sherwood ended on the first extra hole when Woods missed a 5-foot par putt. “I feel very fortunate and somewhat lucky,” Johnson said. He also was very good. Johnson made two birdies and an 8-foot par putt to get within one shot. He nearly holed out a wedge from 88 yards on the par-5 16th hole to match birdies with Woods, who got up-and-down from left of the green. Johnson covered the flag with a tee shot on the par-3 17th hole that landed 4 feet away for a birdie to tie Woods. And then came a big moment that for so many years seemed to be the kind of shot belonging to Woods. “Im trying to get somewhat around the hole and make a 5,” Johnson said. “It wasnt exactly a full wedge shot, but it was one that I could be aggressive with — 58 yards, trying to hit it about 52, 53, and we saw what it did.” The ball took three bounces, the last one just beyond the hole, and it stopped and spun back a few inches into the cup. “A little too dramatic for me,” said Johnson, who closed with a 4-under 68. In the playoff, Woods blinked first with a smooth 7-iron that tailed off to the right and into the same bunker, this lie even tougher. Johnson hit the green and two-putted for par, and while Woods hit another great shot out of the sand, his par putt to extend the playoff spun out of the left side of the cup. “Zach, I dont know how the last three iron shots didnt go in the hole,” Woods said after his closing 70. “Pretty impressive what he did. He got me.” Johnson and Woods finished at 13-under 275, four shots clear of Matt Kuchar (67) and Bubba Watson (70). It was only the fourth time in his career that Woods failed to win when he had at least a two-shot lead going into the final round, and the second time at Sherwood. Graeme McDowell made up a four-shot deficit in the 2010 World Challenge and beat Woods in a playoff. The World Challenge was held at Sherwood for the 14th and final time. It moves next year to Isleworth in Florida. The attendance Sunday was 24,922, a record for any round in 14 years at Sherwood. Traffic outside the tony club in the Santa Monica foothills looked like an LA freeway in what could be the last chance in the near future to see Woods in southern California. The stage was set for the proper sendoff. It turned out to be redemption for Johnson. Two years ago, he was poised to win the World Challenge until Woods made birdie on the last two holes for a one-shot victory, the first for Woods in more than two years dating to the crisis in his personal life. That sent him on his way to three wins in 2012, and five more this year that restored Woods to No. 1 in the world. That made the win for Johnson — his second this year, 11th of his career — that much sweeter, even if the ending was awkward. “I went head-to-head against the best,” Johnson said. "Young guys … hes their idol. Hes their Jack Nicklaus. Hes the guy that paved the way. Hes the one that keeps pushing the ceiling higher and higher and hes the one that keeps raising the bar. If he stays healthy — hopefully, he does — theres no telling what he can do. “So yeah, Ill take pride in the fact that I played against the best, and I got one,” he said. “I mean, hes gotten a lot more than I have. So hopefully, Im in that position again and I think Ill learn from today.” Woods hit two splendid bunker shots on the 18th hole — in regulation and the playoff — but was let down by his putter. He was blocking putts for most of Sunday, and made sure he didnt make that mistake on the 5-footer for par to extend the playoff, a putt that broke sharply to the right. This one caught the left lip and spun out. It was not the way he wanted to leave Sherwood, where Woods has five wins and now five runner-up finishes. The only consolation was $400,000 for finishing second, bringing to just over $14 million the earnings he has donated to his foundation from the three tournaments (AT&T National, Deutsche Bank, World Challenge) that support his education programs. For now, Joe Girardi and the rest of the New York Yankees are just thankful they have the Japanese right-hander pitching like one of the best in baseball.NEW YORK — Robinson Cano shrugged off the boos in his return to Yankee Stadium and walked away a two-time winner. Cano doubled and drove in two runs to help the Seattle Mariners beat the New York Yankees 4-2 Thursday night behind an impressive pitching performance from rookie Roenis Elias. Michael Saunders had three hits, including an RBI double, and Elias struck out 10 in seven innings as the Mariners won their fifth in six games following an eight-game skid. Seattle took both games in a rain-shortened series that marked Canos first trip back to New York after leaving for a $240 million, 10-year contract last off-season. “Both days felt good because both days we won, so it has to feel good,” Cano said. The All-Star second baseman was booed again and finished the series 2 for 9 with three RBIs. Seattle has won four straight at Yankee Stadium dating to last season. “There werent any expectations from the crowd today. I just wanted to go out and take care of business,” Cano said. “You have to understand the fans, but it is not going to be a distraction for me.” Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda (2-3) gave up four runs — three earned — and seven hits in six innings, lowering his ERA slightly to 5.14. It was an improvement over his previous outing Friday night, when the 39-year-old right-hander was hammered in a 13-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. “I think its a step in the right direction,” New York manager Joe Girardi said. “A lot of nights thats going to be good enough to win.” Elias (2-2) gave up a leadoff homer to Jacoby Ellsbury but not much else in his first appearance against the Yankees. The left-hander from Cuba threw 73 of 110 pitches for strikes, starting 75 per cent of his 28 batters with a strike. He allowed six hits and one earned run while walking two. Yoervis Medina worked a perfect eighth, and Fernando Rodney got three outs for his sixth save. “The adrenaline comes from the spotlight,” Elias said through a translator. “Ive never been to the stadium so it was good to come here and beat the Yankees. Ive seen it on TV but never been here.” Ellsbury, who sat out Tuesday with a sore left hand, sent Elias fourth pitch to right field for his first home run with the Yankees. It was New Yorks first leadoff shot since Derek Jeter connected at the Chicago Whhite Sox on Aug.dddddddddddd 21, 2012. Elias, who skipped Triple-A, struck out the next three batters and settled in from there. Showing good command of a sharp curve, he induced two double-play grounders and struck out the side in the fifth. “He was hitting his spots. He was getting ahead. He pitched a good game. Hes got a good arm,” Jeter said. “Sometimes pitchers are going to be better than you. He threw really well. Hes not a typical lefty who tries to trick you. He gets it up there pretty good.” Cano hit an RBI double in the first and a run-scoring groundout in the third after Jeter made an error at shortstop. Brad Miller dumped a two-out RBI single in front of hesitant left fielder Brett Gardner in the fourth. Saunders followed with a ground-rule double that made it 4-1. New York cut it to 4-2 in the sixth on Brian McCanns run-scoring single with two outs after Cano was charged with an error. Elias retired Yangervis Solarte with two on to end the inning. The Yankees did not get another baserunner until a two-out single by pinch-hitter Ichiro Suzuki in the ninth. “The young man threw a tremendous game. We thought hed be OK in this environment,” Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said about Elias. “The young man is tough.” NOTES: After the rainout Wednesday, the Mariners pushed back ace Felix Hernandez one day to Friday night in Houston. Elias had been scheduled to start Wednesday, followed by Hernandez on Thursday. “Give him an extra day and it also gives Elias an extra day. It just made sense,” McClendon said. “Felix has been taxed quite a bit and hes pitched on regular rest for quite a while. Its an opportunity to get him where we need him to be. His last two outings have not been sterling outings, I think we would agree. So it gives us a chance to freshen him up and get him back on the right track.” … Seattle has not announced a starter for Saturday or Sunday. McClendon said its possible All-Star RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) will come off the disabled list to make his season debut this weekend. … McClendon sat struggling CF Abraham Almonte, who was replaced by Saunders in the leadoff spot. Almonte entered on defence in the eighth. … Many players on the Mariners received autographed Jeter jerseys — but not Cano. … Ellsbury has 11 career leadoff homers. ’ ’ ’

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Quarterback Dan Orlovsky is back with the Detroit Lions after signing a one-year contract. Orlovsky spent the last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He appeared in two games last season. He was drafted by the Lions in the fifth round of the 2005 draft and played his first four years in the NFL with Detroit. His arrival gives the Lions a veteran backup for quarterback Matthew Stafford. Shaun Hill filled that role previously, but he signed with St. Louis this off-season. The Lions also announced Friday that they have signed tackle J.B. Shugarts. He was an undrafted rookie out of Ohio State in 2012, and has previously been on practice squads with the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills and New York Jets. Ibrahimovic put PSG ahead when he got in front of his marker to neatly flick in Lucass cross in the 59th minute. New signing Yohan Cabaye came on as a second-half substitute and headed Ezequiel Lavezzis cross against the post in the 87th. Moments later, Lucas set up another goal from the right when fellow countryman Alex turned in his corner with a strikers finish. Last weekend, Alexs late header had rescued a point as PSG laboured to a 1-1 draw away to Guingamp. “We came into this match on the back of a draw and a defeat,” PSG coach Laurent Blanc said. “I think we just didnt let Bordeaux play at all. Defensively, we didnt cooncede many corners, and we did what we had to do, although we could have done a bit better up front.ddddddddddddLucas did well, but given how many chances he gets he should score.” Midfielder Blaise Matuidi welcomed Cabayes arrival. “He did well when he came on, and we know hes a very good player,” Matuidi said. “Thats good for us and good for the French league for such a player to come back to France.” The only drawback for PSG was an injury to 20-goal scorer Edinson Cavani. The Uruguay striker limped off in the 75th clutching the back of his right thigh and is doubtful for next weeks League Cup semifinal against Nantes and the clash with Monaco. “He felt a bit of pain behind his thigh, its a bit of a problem when a player asks to come off because it means he knows he cant go on,” Blanc said. “Well know a bit more about it tomorrow.” ’ ’ ’

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Oscar Pistorius was in an altercation at an upmarket nightclub over the weekend, his family said Tuesday. Pistorius went with a cousin to a trendy Johannesburg nightclub on Saturday, where he was accosted by a man who aggressively questioned him about his murder trial, his family confirmed. The man gave a different version, saying the double-amputee runner was drunk, insulted his friends and the family of President Jacob Zuma and poked him in the chest, according to Johannesburgs Star newspaper. Regardless of who started the argument, the weekend episode focuses fresh attention on the disputed character of Pistorius, a globally recognized athlete who is on trial for murder after he fatally shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through a closed toilet door on Feb. 14, 2013. Defence lawyers describe Pistorius, currently free on bail, as a vulnerable figure with a disability who pulled the trigger in a tragic case of mistaken identity, but prosecutors portray him as a gun-obsessed hothead who shot Steenkamp after the couple quarreled. The trial is on a break ahead of closing arguments on Aug. 7-8, sparing Pistorius the near-daily trip to the Pretoria courthouse, where he has sometimes wept and wailed in apparent distress during testimony. The nightclub argument has put him back on the front pages of South Africas press, which has also highlighted a number of quotations about suffering and religious faith that appeared on his Twitter account in the hours that followed. The altercation in the nightspot cannot be a factor in Pistorius trial, said a legal analyst who has closely followed proceedings. “It would not be appropriate to mention it in closing arguments as it would constitute hearsay as no previous witness has entered evidence of it on the trial record,” Kelly Phelps, a senior lecturer in the public law department at the University of Cape Town, wrote in an email to The Associated Press. “If it had occurred earlier in proceedings the gentleman concerned could have been called as a witness or Mr. Pistorius could have been questioned on the reports. Even then it would have very little value. The most important thing the court needs to determine is what Pistorius was thinking and how he was acting on the night in question,” wrote Phelps, referring to the night on which Pistorius killed Steenkamp. Pistorius had been barred from consuming alcohol under early bail conditions, but the ban was rescinded after the defence appealed. He was seated in a quiet booth in the VIP section of the nightclub before he was approached, said Anneliese Burgess, a spokeswoman for the Pistorius family. “The individual, according to my client, started to aggressively interrogate him on matters relating to the trial. An argument ensued during which my client asked to be left alone,” she said in a statement. “Oscar soon thereafter left the club with his cousin. My client regrets the decision to go to a public space and thereby inviting unwelcome attention.” The man who argued with Pistorius is Jared Mortimer, according to Johannesburgs Star newspaper and The Juice, a South African celebrity news website, which quoted Mortimer as saying the Paralympic athlete started the confrontation. Pistorius said Mortimers friends had betrayed him in the murder trial, The Star quoted Mortimer as saying in an apparent reference to evidence presented in court. The athlete also said he had information that could get those friends into trouble, but he would not use it, according to Mortimer. “He was drunk, but not bad. We were drinking tequila and I still remember putting down my drink and thinking I couldnt drink it while my friends were being spoken of like that,” The Star quoted Mortimer as saying. Pistorius also insulted the family of the South African president, Jacob Zuma, upsetting Mortimer, who is a friend of a member of Zumas family, according to the newspaper. “He was poking me and saying that I would never get the better of him,” the newspaper quoted Mortimer as saying. “He was close to my face and at that point I pushed him to get him away from me. A chair was behind his legs and he fell to the ground.” The altercation happened Saturday night in Sandton, an upscale area in Johannesburg, according to South African media. A woman who answered the telephone at The VIP Room, the club where the incident occurred, said club owner Chris Coutroulis was “overseas” and was awaiting reports from club staff who witnessed the altercation. The club website says it caters to the “nouveau riche” and invites guests to “slip on your diamante dancing shoes or designer suit and dance the night away at the most ostentatious venue in Joburg.” On Monday, several quotations appeared on Pistorius Twitter account. He last tweeted on Feb. 14, the first anniversary of Steenkamps death. Pistorius, who says he killed Steenkamp after thinking an intruder was about to attack him, faces 25 years to life in prison if found guilty of premeditated murder. ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — Even on an off night, the Abbotsford Heat showed the patience and skill required to sit atop the American Hockey Leagues standings. The Heat gave up an early goal but battled back and took over the game in Wednesdays 6-2 defeat of the Iowa Wild. Abbotsford trailed 1-0 and 2-1 until the Heat scored twice in 15 seconds. “We really had some bad breakdowns,” said Heat head coach Troy Ward. "I thought, Is this one of those nights where its a typical midweek game? We dont play a lot of those in Abbotsford, and it was like, Here we go, its a 6-5 shootout but then we settled in a little bit. “The critical juncture for me was we scored that third goal. Once we got up 3-2, we kind of relaxed a little bit and we settled in and I thought we played a little bit better defensively.” Greg Nemisz scored that goal. The Calgary Flames 2008 first round pick was playing in his 200th career AHL game. “Its something to be proud of,” said Nemisz of the milestone. “Its not easy to play 200 professional games.” The 23-year-old has 81 points in that span, to go with his one assist in 15 NHL games. “Nemo is still forefront in the organizations mind,” said Ward. "If you look at all the players who have donned the Heat jersey and played the 200 games, hes one of the most consistent performers. He obviously stubbed his toe last year — he was coming off an injury at the start of the year and he just didnt have a real good year. “But so far, I think hes gotten out of the gates parallel to his first two years, where he got right around 30 points. Were happy with that, were still developing and working on parts of his game that are still coming.” Ben Street scored twice, picking up his team-high 16th goal of the season, giving Novembers AHL player of the month 23 points in his last 15 games. Markus Granlund had a goal and an assist for Abbotsford (20-6-2), giving him a 10-game point streak in which he has 13 points. Brett Olson had a goal and two assists. Michael Ferland also scored, Corban Knight and Kane Lafranchise had two assists apiece, while Joni Ortio made 22 saves.dddddddddddd “We have the forwards that are capable of scoring when they want to,” said Lafranchise. The Heat needed just 20 shots to get to six goals. The finished with 26 and wish they had more. “We were a little opportunistic tonight,” said Nemisz. “We made some good plays. All in all, I dont think we played as well as we wanted to but we definitely had luck tonight.” Brett Bulmer had a goal and an assist for Iowa (8-13-1), while Erik Haula also scored. Johan Gustafsson stopped 20 shots in the loss. The Wild opened the scoring just 64 seconds into the game. Bulmer recovered the puck in the corner and quickly centred for Haula who converted for his fifth goal of the year. “Its just one mistake in the back our net so we tried not to get too down about that,” said Nemisz. Abbotsford tied it around the eight-minute mark. Olson crossed the blue-line and fed Ferland rushing down the left wing. The Brandon, Man. native beat Gustafsson stick side with a quick shot, giving him six goals on the season. However Iowa got a power play shortly after to regain its lead. Bulmer raced down the right side and beat Ortio glove side, top corner for his ninth of the year. The Heat took the lead with two goals in 25 seconds. First Street picked up his 15th of the season, one-timing a centring feed by Josh Jooris at 14:40. Then Nemisz recorded his fifth of the season, chipping a loose puck past Gustafsson after Knight threw it on the goal. Granlund got his 11th of the season at 5:10 of second period. Kane Lafranchise threw the puck on net and Granlund corralled the rebound, tucking it between Gustafssons skate and the post. Street scored his second at 14:55. Knight dished him a backhand pass that Street one-timed, top shelf, giving the Heat a commanding 5-2 lead. The offensive continued in the third when Olson scored at 8:50 on the power play. He redirected a perfect pass from Lafranchise for his fifth of the year. The Heats power play finished 2 for 3 and has been red-hot of late, ranking them second in the league with a 26.8 success rate. ’ ’ ’

WACO, Texas — Joshua Montgomery had the hot hand in the first half for Savannah State, making four 3-pointers and scoring 14 points against Baylor. Then the No. 9 team in the country made an adjustment. Montgomery scored just one point after the Break as Baylor broke out for an easy 80-50 victory Friday night. “I think they just paid a little bit more attention to him,” Savannah State coach Horace Broadnax said. “I told him he needs to shoot the ball more. When he makes shots, were a better team. The second half, Baylor just kept an eye on him. Obviously (Baylor coach Scott) Drew made some adjustments and said, Pay attention to Mr. Montgomery.” Montgomery was the lone bright spot for Savannah State (2-12), which has lost 10 straight. Taurean Prince came off the bench to score 15 for Baylor. Cory Jefferson had 13 points for the Bears (12-1), and Isaiah Austin and Rico Gathers each scored 11 for the Bears, who its 12th consecutive home game. Savannah State made 2 of 4 free throw attempts while Baylor was 19 of 28 from the line. Jyles Smith shot the Tigers first free throw with 6:52 left in the game, making 1 of 2 after being fouled by Jefferson. “You expect that type of unbalance,” Broadnax said. “We werent doing what we needed to do to attack the basket off the dribble like I wanted to. Going up against these trees, its hard for these 6-foot guys to get the ball to the basket.” Baylor improved to 25-9 in January since 2009-10. The Bears only loss this season was to then No. 8 Syracuse in Hawaii in November. Jefferson hit a 3 — his second of the game and fourth of the season — to give Baylor a 45-28 lead with 1:41 left in the first half, and the Bears led 46-30 at the break and shot 75 per cent from the field. Both teams struggled after halftime. Baylor scored just five points in the first 5 minutes. Savannah State was held scoreless until Jeremiah Hills jumper in the lane with 14:12 left. At that point, Baylor held a 51-32 lead. Gathers made four consecutive baskets for the Bears in a 3-minute, 21-second span midway through the second half. After a layup with 13:01 left, he established his position just under the basket on an inbounds play, took the pass from Ish Wainwright and slammed in a quick dunk. After a rebound and putback, Gathers then converted a three-point play that gave Baylor a 62-42 lead with 9:39 remaining. The Detroit Red Wings winger was at his best once again scoring three goals in a 6-1 win over the Ottawa Senators Thursday night. Franzen, who returned to the Red Wings lineup Wednesday after playing just one of the past 24 games due to a concussion, has previously enjoyed success against the Senators. In February 2011, Franzen scored five goals against the Senators. “I like playing here,” said Franzen. “We have Erik Karlsson on the other side and we grew up in the same little town so its always fun to play him. Its something special every time. Im just happy to keep him from the scoreboard. Its always fun to play him.” Detroit coach Mike Babcock is pleased to see Franzen having success. “Hes an important player for us,” said Babcock. “He has the ability, he has the touch. Lots of guys play real hard and cant score (Franzen) can score.” It appears he also has the ability to get under his opponents skin. Ottawas Chris Neil went after Franzen late in the game and while nothing came of it Franzen was less than impressed. “He tried to hit me and he couldnt move me so I think he got a little upset,” said Franzen. “I have no clue. He usually shows up when the game is over and tries to be the hero. He puts his cape on and goes and flies out there. I dont know.” Riley Sheahan, Tomas Jurco and Tomas Tatar also scored for Detroit. Jonas Gustavsson stopped 37 shots. With the win the Red Wings (28-20-12) have a five-point lead over the Senators (26-23-11) for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference standings. “Coming back from the break and you start 2-0 its way better than the opposite way,” said Babcock. “We know were in a battle for our playoff life. We understand that so getting off to a good start is imperative.” The Senators had little explanation for their performance. “Its an extremely disappointing loss,” said Ottawa captain Jason Spezza. “We knew that it was a very important game for us and to lose it by that score is obviously not what we were looking for.” Bobby Ryan scored the lone goal for the Senators, who were playing their first game since the Olympic break. Robin Lehner allowed six goals on 15 shots before Andrew Hammond made his NHL debut, stopping all nine shots he faced. Things fell apart for the Senators in a nine-minute span in the first period. Ryan had a goal called back after it was ruled that he kicked it in and then the Senators leading goal scorer missed two great chances on the power play. Things began to unravel after the Red Wings scored on consecutive shots. Ottawaas Cody Ceci gave the puck up deep in the Senators end as he made a no-look behind-the-back pass that landed right on the stick of Sheahan who ripped a shot past Lehner.dddddddddddd Just 29 seconds later Franzen scored his first as he was left all alone to give Detroit a 2-0 lead. Franzen then made it 3-0 with a power-play goal as once again he was left alone, this time on the opposite side of the ice. Following the game Lehner could not hide his disappointment. “They got a few goals pretty fast and then it snowballed,” said Lehner. “I think weve all got to do better in our zone and Ive got to do better. It was one of the most toughest games Ive played personally, but its over now. Theres not much to say.” Detroit made it 4-0 on a delayed penalty call with two minutes remaining in the period. Niklas Kronwall, who finished with three assists, had a shot from just inside the blue-line deflected and ended up on Jurcos stick, who roofed it over Lehner. The 18,931 on hand at Canadian Tire Centre were so disappointed they booed the home team off the ice. Senators coach Paul MacLean had few words to explain his teams performance. “We played a lot better than the score maybe indicated, but the score is what it is and you cant change that,” said MacLean. When asked who was the best player MacLean couldnt help but say “Johan Franzen I think. I think were all tied for the worst.” Franzen completed his hat trick early in the second period. Ryan finally got the Senators on board at the four-minute mark of the second, but any celebration was short-lived as Detroit made it 6-1 as Tatar beat Lehner from in close. That marked the end of Lehners appearance, opening the door for Hammond to make his first NHL appearance. Craig Anderson was unavailable due to the birth of his second child. Despite the surprise appearance Hammond held his own and made a number of big saves. “Not letting anything in was a good start,” said Hammond. “Any kid from Canada growing up playing hockey its their dream to play in the NHL and its pretty special for me to be one of those guys thats lucky enough now to say Ive played in the NHL. Its very special.” This was the fourth and final meeting between the teams as they split the season series. Notes: D Patrick Wiercioch, D Joe Corvo and LW Matt Kassian were a healthy scratch for the Senatorsa RW Patrick Eaves, RW Todd Bertuzzi and RW Daniel Cleary were a healthy scratch for the Red Wingsa A number of Canadian Olympians were recognized prior to the game including Detroit head coach Mike Babcock and General Manager Ken Holland. Thursdays game marked Daniel Alfredssons second appearance at Canadian Tire Centre since signing with the Red Wings last summer. ’ ’ ’

MIAMI — Eager to give himself some run support, New York Mets pitcher Jonathon Niese stepped to the plate with a runner at third and dropped down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt. His teammates, meanwhile, swung away — and connected. Daniel Murphy hit a three-run homer and the Mets matched a season high with 17 hits Sunday to beat the slumping Miami Marlins 11-5. Niese (4-4), who has been plagued by a lack of offensive help this year, won for the first time since May 22 and enjoyed pitching with a big lead. “It was a good feeling,” he said. “We hit them hard and hit them early. Its a lot more comfortable going out there, and youre able to pound the zone.” Niese allowed less than four earned runs for the 19th consecutive start, giving up three in six innings. “The offence really busted out, and Jonathon did another great job,” teammate David Wright said. “Every time he takes the ball, you think hes going to go nine innings, and offensively we havent done a lot to pick him up. Im glad we were able to do that today.” Niese — batting eighth - drove in a run with a bunt in the second inning. Manager Terry Collins joked that he hadnt called for a suicide squeeze since 2006, and Niese said it might have been the first of his career. “Luckily was able to get a pitch I could put down,” Niese said. Kirk Nieuwenhuis scored without a play for a 2-0 lead. “The squeeze was huge,” Collins said. “We dont do that much, but I wanted to see if we could get something started, so we tried something different.” The bulk of the offence, however, came from higher in the order. Wright drove in a run for the sixth game in a row. Curtis Granderson thrived again in the leadoff spot, reaching base four consecutive times. He and Lucas Duda each had three hits. Murphy had two hits, including his sixth homer. Nieuwenhuis, making his first start since being recalled from Triple-A, doubled twice. “Weve been waiting a long time to break one open,” Collins said. “People think we play ugly game. Were getting beat 4-3 and 3-2. Were hanging in there. We get a lot of guys on, we just havent been able to get big hits. When you have big hits, you look great.” Rookie Anthony DeSclafani (1-2), making his fourth major league start, gave up seven runs in 3 2-3 innings and departed with a 7.59 ERA. He was unable to keep the ball down or throw breaking pitches for strikes. “I fell behind hitters, and the fastballs were flying up in the zone,” he said. “When that happens, youre not going to get the results you want.” The Marlins (37-38) fell below .500 for the first time since April 30. Ten days ago they had the best home record in the majors, but they went 3-7 on their longest homestand of the year, losing all three series. “You just have to keeping grinding and stay positive,” Garrett Jones said. “Its a long season. Every team runs into this type of thing where the offence isnt clicking and the pitching isnt clicking.” The Mets had scored a total of 13 runs in Nieses previous five starts, but he led 7-0 before giving up three runs in the sixth. The left-hander then struck out Derek Dietrich with the bases loaded to end the inning and his afternoon. Nieses performance was part of a trend. Mets starters have an ERA of 1.74 over the past six games. The Mets have won four of their past five, but they still trail NL East leader Washington by five games. “If we keep the starting pitching going and keep the offence going, I think we should climb back in this thing,” Niese said. This week they discuss the NHL paying Wayne Gretzky, fighting in hockey, the “Group of Death” and the Buffalo Sabres disaster season.Goaltending is massively important to determining which teams win and lose in the NHL, yet its incredibly difficult to predict. Even if you expect regression to take place, bringing down the highest highs and raising the lowest lows, there are still seasons that seem to come out of nowhere, either good or bad. Anyway, Ive taken a look at the goaltending situation, for all 30 teams, to this point in the season. ANAHEIM DUCKS When the season began, it looked as though Jonas Hiller would be hard-pressed to split time with Viktor Fasth in the Ducks net, but thats not how the season has played out, at all. Hiller, who is slated to become an unrestricted free agent at seasons end and could have been a viable trade chip under different circumstances, has been a solid, if not spectacular presence in net for Anaheim, posting a .914 save percentage. Fasth, on the other hand, hasnt played since suffering a lower-body injury November 18. He appears to be nearing a return but, having played only five games this season, it would be shocking for the Ducks to turn to Fasth as the starter down the stretch and into the postseason. If he plays great, perhaps he can take the job, but theres not a great deal of time left to make that . In Fasths absence, 24-year-old Danish rookie Frederik Andersen has established his credentials an NHL goaltender, posting a .933 save percentage in 16 games. The interesting part for the Ducks, at least theoretically, is whether they would be comfortable going with Andersen and/or Fasth down the stretch, allowing them to still market Hiller, but contending teams tend not to clear out their starting goaltenders unless making an obvious upgrade. Well, that and Ducks GM Bob Murray has made it clear that Hillers not going anywhere. That leaves Andersen ticketed for the AHL, where top prospect John Gibson has been handling the starters workload, when Fasth is ready to return. BOSTON BRUINS The Bruins situation in net is very clearly defined. Even with a slight slump recently, 26-year-old Tuukka Rask has a .930 save percentage and his .928 save percentage since 2009-2010 ranks as the best among goaltenders with at least 150 games played. A positive development for the Bruins has been that 27-year-old Chad Johnson, who had played 10 NHL games prior to this season, has fared well in the backup role, with a .918 save percentage in 14 appearances. Hes not a threat to Rasks playing time and is solid enough when given the chance to play. BUFFALO SABRES A pending unrestricted free agent, 33-year-old Ryan Miller has been the Sabres starting goaltender since 2005-2006 and while Buffalo is struggling this season, Miller is having one of his best years; his .926 save percentage is a career-best, behind only 2009-2010 when he won the Vezina Trophy as leagues top goaltender. Considering his age and contract status, Miller is a prime candidate to be moved, which will shake up the goaltending on two teams — Millers new team as well as the Sabres, who will need a replacement. Jhonas Enroth, the 25-year-old backup, might benefit immediately should Miller move on, but Enroths track record, which included a respectable .912 save percentage in 70 career games, isnt enough to think that hes the inevitable heir apparent. That could open the door for an external candidate (potentially in the summer) or prospect Matt Hackett, though Hackett currently has a career-low .906 save percentage in the AHL. CALGARY FLAMES Few teams are as questionable in goal as the Flames. Karri Ramo came over from the KHL, where he had been very good for four seasons, and he struggled early, posting an .890 save percentage through the end of November. Its been better since — .913 in 17 games since the beginning of December — maybe enough to warrant NHL employment as a backup, but hardly anything to assure a future starting spot for the 27-year-old. 27-year-old Reto Berra had an okay run for seven games in December, but has been subpar otherwise, with an .893 save percentage an indication that hes not ready for more responsibility. If any team needs a goaltending upgrade, its the Flames and, with a new general manager, there isnt any loyalty due to those in-house. However, if the Flames are positioning for a draft pick — and, by all rights, they should be — there is no need to worry about that upgrade until the summer. CAROLINA HURRICANES Injuries have been a problem for 29-year-old Cam Ward, limiting him to 36, of a possible 101, games over the past two (partial) seasons. Not only that, but Ward hasnt played particularly well when he has been in the lineup. Among goaltender to play at least 30 games since the start of last season, Wards .901 save percentage ranks 41st out of 46. Wards inconsistency and injuries present opportunities for others. Anton Khudobin (who ranks eighth on that same list of 46 goaltenders) has been very good for Carolina and the 27-year-old could be in line to handle more work, but hes played a career-high 16 NHL games this season, and has played a total of 37 games in his career, so its not easy to hand the reins over to him. The pleasant surprise for the Hurricanes, when Ward and Khudobin were injured earlier in the season, was the play of 27-year-old Justin Peters, who struggled last year, but has a .919 save percentage in a career-high 21 games this year. Peters will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer, which could make him a trade candidate, though his uneven track record (.904 save percentage in 68 career games) will limit the potential return. CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS Last seasons Stanley Cup win gives Corey Crawford a measure of job security, which is good for him because hes missed time due to injury and hias .911 save percentage isnt anywhere near last seasons .926 mark. Crawford has played well enough since returning from injury (.918 save percentage in January), but the Blackhawks have struggled as a whole this month. Crawford was supposed to have veteran Nikolai Khabibulin as his backup this year, but Khabibulin has played just four games and is out for the year following shoulder surgery. The injuries suffered by Crawford and Khabibulin created an opportunity for 24-year-old Finnish rookie Antti Raanta, who played pretty well through the end of December, but his numbers have slipped over his past four starts. In any case, the Blackhawks are a team with a stable position in net. Crawford starts, with Raanta on hand for spot starts. COLORADO AVALANCHE Sure, the Avalanche have a great crop of forwards and that talent is impressive, but if there is a single reason for their dramatic improvement over last season, its likely on the shoulders of goaltender Semyon Varlamov, who has a career-best .925 save percentage, up from a career-low .903 last year. With early-season legal troubles seemingly behind him, Varlamov has performed at an above average level, even after his spectacular start (.945 save percentage in October). Veteran Jean-Sebastien Giguere started the year at an outrageous level, posting a .949 save percentage through the end of November, but hes dipped since, with an .857 save percentage in his past six outings. COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS It would have been unfair to expect 25-year-old Sergei Bobrovsky to duplicate last years Vezina-Trophy-winning season, when he posted a .932 save percentage, but Bobrovsky slumped in November before getting hurt. Fortunately, for the Blue Jackets, Bobrovsky has been great since coming off the injured list, with a .925 save percentage in January, so hes re-establishing his credentials as a top puckstopper. When Bobrovsky was out, Curtis McElhinney was pressed into more action and has played 22 games already, the second-highest total of his NHL career. 30-year-old McElhinney has a .908 save percentage on the year, which is respectable enough for a bargain backup goaltender. DALLAS STARS A January swoon has knocked Kari Lehtonens numbers (.915 save percentage) down to an average level, but Lehtonens track record is pretty strong. Among goaltenders that handle the heaviest workload, Lehtonen ranks seventh with a .917 save percentage (minimum 180 games) over the past four seasons. Dan Ellis has struggled in the backup role, with an .898 save percentage this season (after .906 in Carolina last year), but is fine, and relatively inexpensive, in the role. DETROIT RED WINGS Its been a tough year for Jimmy Howard, who had a .921 save percentage over the previous two seasons, but had a .906 save percentage through the end of December. Hes been better lately, though injuries have made it difficult for him to establish significant momentum in the crease. Howards injuries allowed Jonas Gustavsson to play and he played well enough — his .910 save percentage is a career-best — but hes regressing over the last half dozen starts. 21-year-old Petr Mrazek may be the goaltender of the future and has a .923 save percentage in nine career NHL games but, so far, hes only been able to get spot duty when Howard has been out. EDMONTON OILERS The season started with Devan Dubnyk and Jason LaBarbera as the Oilers tandem in net, but theyre both gone, leaving Ben Scrivens and Ilya Bryzgalov to battle for playing time. Scrivens, 27, has had a strong season between Los Angeles and three starts with the Oilers, posting a .930 save percentage in 22 games. Hes going to be a free agent at seasons end, so this is a prime opportunity for him to audition for next year. Signing 33-year-old Bryzgalov seemed desperate at the time and he hasnt played at a level that suggests hes going to turn around the Oilers problems. FLORIDA PANTHERS Tim Thomass return to the NHL, after sitting out last season, has come with a few hiccups. He started slowly, suffered some injuries and then played pretty well in December in January, though his last few starts havent been stellar. Thomas is a 40-year-old who will be an unrestricted free agent, which would make him trade bait if the Panthers arent in playoff contention. However, there may not be a line of teams looking to acquire an older goaltender who is having an uneven season. 36-year-old backup Scott Clemmensen has an .887 save percentage in 32 games over the past two seasons, which isnt doing the Panthers any favours, but hes in the final year of his deal, so isnt part of the long-term plan. Which brings us to Jacob Markstrom, the 23-year-old who was expected to be the Panthers starter as soon as this season, before Thomas was signed. Markstrom might be considered a quality prospect, but his results to this point, which include an .898 save percentage in 43 games, raise some doubts about whether hes legitimately the Panthers starting goaltender of the future. LOS ANGELES KINGS After a down season in 2012-2013, Jonathan Quick had a strong playoff, which figured to set him up for a good 2013-2014 season. Not quite, as Quick had a .905 save percentage in 16 games before getting hurt. Since coming back from his groin injury, Quick has been terrific, with a .934 save percentage in a dozen games, which should provide some comfort, though it would be nice — no matter who is in net — if the Kings could provide better offensive support. When Quick got hurt, Ben Scrivens got the first shot to play, but then 24-year-old call-up Martin Jones played so well that he couldnt get bumped out of the net. In a dozen games, Jones has a .940 save percentage, which isnt sustainable, but his AHL performance (a .922 save percentage in 151 games) would seem to suggest that hes NHL-ready. MINNESOTA WILD The story of the season was the play of 29-year-old Josh Harding, who has a .933 save percentage and league-leading 1.65 goals against average. But Harding has been sidelined since last playing New Years Eve, as he tries to get his MS medication adjusted, but the uncertainty over his health has forced the Wild to look for alternatives. Fortunately, prospect Darcy Kuemper has been terrific since getting called up, with a .941 save percentage in January, which is dramatically better than a couple of rough early-season outings for the 23-year-old. The emergence of others has left Niklas Backstrom, the 35-year-old who started for the past six-plus seasons, on the outside looking in. That Backstrom has a career-low .899 save percentage is making it much easier to look for other options, but it will be interesting to see what the Wild can do in the future with Backstrom, who still has two years remaining oon his current contract.dddddddddddd MONTREAL CANADIENS The Canadiens defensive collapse, particularly in the month of January, has taken its toll on the numbes of Carey Price, yet Prices .921 save percentage is still the second-best of his career. Over the past four seasons, hes been one of the top heavy-workload puck-stoppers. Peter Budaj continues to perform well in the backup role. Hes been much better as a second-stringer and his .921 save percentage this year is a career-high. NASHVILLE PREDATORS With Pekka Rinne out for most of the season, Nashvilles goaltending plans have been adjusted on the fly. Their latest addition, Devan Dubnyk, was having a miserable season in Edmonton and hasnt fared well in his first couple starts with the Predators, which makes matters even more challenging. 28-year-old Carter Hutton had played precisely one NHL game before winning the job to be Rinnes backup, a gig that figured to require maybe 15 games of work, but Hutton has already played 26 and, while there have been some bumps along the path, he does have a .915 save percentage over the past couple months, emerging as the number one option. For a time, 22-year-old rookie Marek Mazanec was getting many of the starts for the Predators, but his performance faded after a strong start, and hes been returned to Milwaukee of the AHL. All this is a matter of the Predators trying to tread water until Rinne returns. Hes their $7-million franchise goaltender and, on a team that is on a budget, they cant very well afford to have him out of the lineup. But, they dont have much choice in the matter, and have to find a way to make it work until Rinne is sufficiently recovered from hip surgery. NEW JERSEY DEVILS When New Jersey acquired 27-year-old Cory Schneider in a draft day trade with the Vancouver Canucks, it appeared that the Devils had settled on their goaltender of the future and, considering Martin Brodeurs decline in recent seasons, probably the present. Turns out that the Devils are still very loyal to Brodeur, the 41-year-old who has backstopped them to three Stanley Cups, but his play over the past four seasons is not worthy of starting goaltender status. Among goaltenders with at least 100 games played in that span, Brodeur ranks 33rd of 36 with a .904 save percentage. Oh, yeah, and Schneider ranks first at .930, yet Brodeur has played one more game this season. If the Devils are committed to making the postseason, giving Schneider the chance to run with the starting job is the first order of business, and Schneider is forcing that decision with a .952 save percentage in January. NEW YORK ISLANDERS Not altogether surprisingly, 38-year-old Evgeni Nabokov has been a subpar starting goaltender this season, with a .905 save percentage in 25 games, even though hes been better lately, with a .925 save percentage since the beginning of December. Injuries have limited him to 15 games since October, so its tough to trust him, and could be reason enough for the Islanders to seek an upgrade if they think they can make up the difference that they need to make the playoffs. Nabokovs injuries have forced 23-year-old Kevin Poulin into a heavier workload than he can handle and he has an .891 save percentage in 28 games. Poulin might be the goaltender of the future, but hes had a rough go of it over the past couple seasons. Anders Nilsson, also 23, has made it into half a dozen games, but hasnt done anything to indicate that hes the answer to the Isles current problems. Using www.hockey-reference.com Goals Saved Above Average, the Islanders would have allowed 29 fewer goals with average goaltending in place of Nabokov, Poulin and Nilsson. NEW YORK RANGERS One of the elite goaltenders from 2005-2006 through 2013, Henrik Lundqvist has been surprisingly inconsistent this season. Hes been better lately (.931 save percentage in January), but Lundqvists tough start to the year caused the Blueshirts some headaches that they havent been accustomed to dealing with for most of the past decade. It didnt take long for Martin Biron to heed the call of retirement, which created an opportunity for Cam Talbot, which didnt seem like much of a big deal. He is a 26-year-old that was undrafted and played collegiately at that hockey factory Alabama-Huntsville. But Talbot has played well in the AHL (.920 save percentage in 60 games since the start of last season) and has been terrific for the Rangers, posting a .935 save percentage in 16 games. Lundqvist is signed to a new long-term deal, so its not like Talbot is going to usurp him from the No. 1 role, but Talbots contribution has been crucial to the Rangers season. OTTAWA SENATORS Last season was one for the ages for Craig Anderson, who had a .941 save percentage to lead the league. It was also extremely likely — practically guaranteed — that he could not duplicate such a lofty percentage over a full season so regression was to be expected. Well, expected or not, Anderson has regressed notably this year, with his .907 save percentage ranking as his lowest since 2005-2006. At the same time, Anderson has still been getting the starters workload, so the Senators are struggling in part because of goaltending, which was the primary reason for their success in 2012-2013. 22-year-old Robin Lehner is destined to be the Senators goaltender of the future and his .923 save percentage in 46 career games is a positive indication, but hes been unable to wrest the job from Anderson this year and giving up five goals in three of his past four starts doesnt make it look very promising for Lehner to take that job this season. PHILADELPHIA FLYERS When the Flyers acquired Steve Mason from Columbus last season, there was little reason for optimism — Mason had been among the leagues least effective goaltenders since 2009-2010 — but Mason has played pretty well for the Flyers, recording a .920 save percentage in 47 games. It should be noted, however, that Masons save percentage has dropped to .899 in 21 games since the beginning of December, so it remains fair to wonder (or even expect) if 25-year-old Mason will fall back to his established norms, which could cause the Flyers to regret the three-year, $12.3-million extension he just signed. After Ray Emery had a strong season with Chicago in 2012-2013, there was likely a hope that Emery could compete with Mason for the starting job, but hes struggled this year — his .897 save percentage is his lowest since 2007-2008. PHOENIX COYOTES Mike Smith may be a Canadian Olympian, but a lot of that would seem to be predicated on his performance in 2011-2012, when he had a career-best .930 save percentage. In the 79 games since, hes posted a .909 save percentage and the Coyotes need better, especially in the years to come since they have Smith signed through 2018-2019. Backup Thomas Greiss has never played much, never more than 19 games in a season, but hes been good. His career-best .935 save percentage this year gives him a solid .917 mark in 57 career games. If Smith continues to struggle, would it be feasible for Greiss to see more action? PITTSBURGH PENGUINS While Marc-Andre Fleury is having another strong regular season, with an entirely respectable .917 save percentage, what he does in the regular season doesnt much matter. Well, it would matter if it was terrible, but the prime objective for Fleury is, once the playoffs come around, to play at a level that will help erase the past four postseasons, during which he posted an .880 save percentage. 26-year-old Jeff Zatkoff hasnt played much, the first 11 games of his NHL career, but hes been fine in the role. A .902 save percentage isnt but his two starts this month (stopping 57 of 65 shots) have dropped otherwise decent numbers. SAN JOSE SHARKS Antti Niemi has been an above-average-to-very-good goaltender over the previous three seasons, but his play hasnt quite been to that level this season — his .913 save percentage is his lowest since his rookie year in 2009-2010. He is in good company among starting goaltenders over the past four seasons. 26-year-old Alex Stalock had played 72 minutes in three NHL games prior to this season, but he served his time in the AHL and has been great in limited action, posting a 1.56 goals against average and .943 save percentage. Hes allowed more than two goals once in 10 starts. ST. LOUIS BLUES Coming into the year, it looked like Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott might share time in the crease for the Blues, but Halak has taken the decided edge, playing 36 games to Elliotts 22 games, which is strange enough given their relative play (Elliott has a .917 save percentage; Halak has .915). Both are headed for unrestricted free agency and the Blues always seem to get linked to Ryan Miller, which makes for interesting times as the trade deadline approaches. The beauty of it is that, for whomever gets the starting nod, they get to play behind a strong defence. TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING 27-year-old Ben Bishop had played 45 games in the NHL prior to this season, including nine with the Lightning last year, during which he posted a solid .917 save percentage, which appeared to give him an advantage in the goaltending competition with Anders Lindback. Turns out that there was no competition to be had, as Bishop has been exceptional this season, with his .933 save percentage in 39 games putting him right in the middle of the Vezina Trophy conversation. Lindback has continued to struggle and has a .894 save percentage in 41 games with the Lightning since the start of last season. TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS When the Toronto Maple Leafs made a deal for Jonathan Bernier, then signed him to a multi-year contract, there was little doubt which way the club was leaning when it came to their goaltending tandem. To his credit, 25-year-old Bernier has played great, with a .925 save percentage, while handling a starters workload for the first time in his career. James Reimer, also 25, made it difficult to set a number one guy early on, posting a .931 save percentage through the first two months, but his last handful of starts has widened the gap and now its Berniers job to lose. VANCOUVER CANUCKS It might have taken some convincing to get him to come back to Vancouver, Roberto Luongo has resumed his role as the starter and his .921 save percentage is his second-best in the past seven seasons. Theres still the matter of his outrageously long-term deal, but as long as the Canucks have a chance to contend, Luongo is still a strong starting goaltender. 26-year-old Eddie Lack, recovered from a hip injury that cost him most of last season, has been a very good backup, with a .922 save percentage, performing at least adequately when he had to string together a few starts with Luongo injured. WASHINGTON CAPITALS 24-year-old Braden Holtby was off to a fine start to his pro career, and was playing well through the end of November, but hes taken a sudden downturn, posting an .875 save percentage in 11 games since the start of December and talking about having lost his confidence. Michal Neuvirth has been okay when asked to play, with a .915 save percentage in 10 games, but Washingtons best option in goal this season has ben 22-year-old Philipp Grubauer, who delivered a .926 save percentage in 16 games, yet was returned to the AHL when Holtby and Neuvirth were deemed ready to play. If Holtby doesnt recapture that confidence, the Capitals might need Grubauer to come back. WINNIPEG JETS The Jets have Ondrej Pavelec under contract for three more seasons, after this one, a massive commitment for a starting goaltender that currently has a .901 save percentage and has only once in his career posted a save percentage above .906. If a team is ready to make a move in net, it sure ought to be the Jets, but its going to involve some hard decisions on a 26-year-old that has been playing starters minutes at a subpar level. A saving grace for the Jets this season, then, has been 28-year-old Al Montoya, who is likely having the best year of his career, with a .925 save percentage in 16 games. If he could sustain anything resembling that level of play, he might overtake Pavelec, but if he could sustain that level of play, Montoya would likely have played more than 79 career games. Its been more than a year and a half since Canadas mens soccer team tasted victory. Too long for Benito Floro. So while Canadas pair of friendlies against Bulgaria and Moldova in Austria are a continuation of the coachs plan to bring young players into the Canadian team fold, theyre also very much about winning. “We need to win because it is very important for us to improve our psychology and mentality,” Floro said Thursday from Laa an der Thaya, Austria, where the team has been based. “For us, they are two games that are very important.” Canada — 110th in the FIFA rankings — faces No. 73 Bulgaria on Friday in Ritzing then meets 99th-ranked Moldova in Mauer on Tuesday. The Canadians went a woeful 0-13 last year, and scored just one goal — by Marcus Haber — in a 2-1 loss to Japan. Their last victory came in October 2012, a 3-0 win in World Cup qualifying against a Cuban side that dressed just 11 players (several Cubans left the team before the game kicked off in Toronto). “Were longing for a win,” Atiba Hutchinson said. “Its been a while so I think were motivated enough to get that. We just have to go out and work as we always do and hopefully well be a bit more fortunate with getting that result, but well have that working spirit.” Floro summoned a mix of veterans such as Hutchinson and Julian de Guzman and promising young players including Caleb Clarke, Samuel Piette, Daniel Stanese and Cyle Larin for these friendlies. Eight of the Canadians have yet to make their national senior debut, as Floro focuses on developing younger players one year out from the next CONCACAF Gold Cup and the resumption of World Cup qualifying. “The objective is the same for every camp: to prepare players on our system of play because we need to improve our level in attack and defence. At the same time, we want to take the young players because the experienced players are good at teaching them how to work as an individual and in a collective,” Floro said. “For the young players, this is a very good experience because our experienced players are very good people and they are always focused on teaching the young players how to do things in a good way.” Floro is counting on players such as the 31-year-old Hutchinson, who plays professionally in Turkey, to help bring the younger ones along. “Were developing well and mixing some younger players is going to help us,” Hutchinson said. “Its going to take some time to jell a little bit more but I think were trying to go in the right direction.” On a team that sorely needs goal scoring, eyes will be on the six-foot-two Larin in these two friendlies. The 19-year-old from Brampton, Ont., earned conference rookie of the years honours after scoring a team-high 14 goals for the University of Connecticut. “We brought Larin into the Florida camp (in January) because we had a very good reference and we want to test him because hes a striker and we need a lot of players in this position,” Floro said. “In that camp, we realized he is a young player but with good experience playing as a striker. He has a good desire to learn a lot about that and for us he is a good player for the present and the future.” Canadas roster is comprised mostly of European-based players. Among the other veterans on the squad are Andre Hainault, David Edgar, Tosaint Ricketts and Simeon Jackson. . CALGARY - The Stampeders have suspended defensive back Quincy Butler, who has been charged with two counts of assault after an incident outside a Calgary casino. “Ive met with Quincy on several occasions about his situation. Obviously, Im highly disappointed any time one of our players finds himself in this type of situation,” Stampeders coach and general manager John Hufnagel said in a statement released Friday. “At this time, Quincy and I feel that his efforts would be best spent away from the football club and focusing on his personal matters. Therefore, Quincy will be suspended at the start of training camp on June 1. Upon the resolution of his legal situation, we will reassess the matter and make a determination on his status with the team.” Police allege that Butler hit a taxi driver several times at 3 a.m. on May 15 after being asked to pay a deposit before a trip. They also allege that Butler head-butted and punched a man who tried to intervene to help the cab driver. Butler, 30, is scheduled to appear in court on June 26. A steal of two in the ninth sealed the win over Swedish skip Margaretha Sigfridsson, who throws lead stones but calls the shots as skip. Jones has now added Olympic gold to the world championship she won in 2008 as well as four Canadian crowns. In the process, she has matched Canadian skip Kevin Martins feat of winning the Olympic crown with a perfect record. Its Canadas second womens curling gold. The late Sandra Schmirler won the first in Nagano, Japan, in 1998. Britains Eve Muirhead, the 2013 world champion, defeated Switzerlands Mirjam Ott 6-5 for the bronze medal earlier in the day. Team Canada coach Mike Babcock was in the stands to witness the Canadian win, as were several members of the Swedish hockey team. No Canada womens team has even won a world championship since Jones rink, without third Kaitlyn Lawes, claimed the crown in 2008. Jones beat Sigfridssons route in the round-robin en route to that title. Jones, Lawes, second Jill Officer and lead Dawn McEwen dispatched Muirhead in the semifinal after going 9-0 in the round-robin. Canada downed Sweden 9-3 on the second day of the Olympic curling competition, with the Swedes shaking hands with two ends left. It was a tough start for Officer and Lawes, who thumped her broom in disgust at one point. Jones, who opened with hammer, had to take one in the first end after some aggressive curling by the Swedes had the Canadian skip holding last rock with three Swedish stones in the house. Jones hit and stuck for thhe single.dddddddddddd The Swedes tied it up, escaping with a single from a crowded house in the second. Lawes doubled off two Swedish rocks as the third was blanked. Canada capitalized in the fourth when Swedens Maria Prytz — throwing fourth — jammed on a double attempt with last rock and Jones drew for a deuce and a 3-1 lead. With Lawes and Officer struggling and Sweden holding hammer, Jones faced a house with three Swedish rocks counting as she threw her last stone. She hit and stuck, but leaving Sweden shot rock. Prytz tried to remove Canadian rocks for a big score but had to settle for two and a 3-3 tie. The sixth and seventh were blanked as the Swedes put rocks in the house and Canada cleaned them out. In the eighth, there was more action in the house. After freezes by Canada and Sweden, each team had a rock around the same distance from the button. Jones tried to draw for a possible two, happy to nudge the Swedish rock out of the way, but was short and Canada had to settle for one after a measurement. The Swedes went down 4-3 but high-fived because they had hammer. Jones nailed a pressure draw with her last rock of the ninth. That piled the pressure on Prytz, given the plethora of Canadian rocks in the house. The Swede wrecked her shot and Canada stole two. Prytz looked to the skies, as if wondering what she had to deserve such a fate. The Swedes have a rich history in curling at the Olympics, winning gold in 2006 and 2010 (via Anette Norberg) and bronze in 1998 (Elisabet Gustafson). Sigfridsson has lost four world championship finals: as third in 2002, lead in 2009 and as skip with her current team in 2012 and 2013. ’ ’ ’

CARSON, Calif. — Fanendo Adi scored his first two MLS goals to help the Portland Timbers beat Chivas USA 2-0 on Wednesday night. Portland improved to 3-3-7, winning its second straight game and third in its last five. Chivas dropped to 2-6-4. Former Chivas midfielder Jorge Villafana helped create the first goal when he ran down the left flank in the 65th minute and crossed the ball to Adi for a shot from 10 yards out. Adi doubled Portlands advantage in the 71st minute on a breakaway. Chivas Bobby Burling was sent off in the 84th minute after a rough challenge on Adi. Portland made eight changes to the starting lineup from its road victory Saturday night over New York. Adi played the final 7 minutes against New York match and made his first Timbers start against Chivas. Krall resigned the day after Canadian Chan won his second straight world title in Nice, France, beating Japanese skaters Daisuke Takahashi and Yuzuru Hanyu. “As with any athlete, we have to go through an evolution, we have to look at other places that need to be improved,” Chan said Friday at the World Team Trophy. The 21-year-old from Toronto credited Krall with helping him master the quadruple jump, allowing him to win the past two world championships. “It was a great, great time with Christy,” Chan said. “She taught me the quad, I would have never had the technical abilities that I have now wiithout her as a coach.dddddddddddd” Chan will continue to work with another member of his coaching team, Kathy Johnson. “As for my program, its not all about the technical,” Chan said. "It has to be an integration of the jumps with the transitions, those two elements are not separate, they are one element and we have to learn to weave the two together. “Kathy has the ability to do that and its a smooth transition as I have already been working with her.” Krall told the Canadian Press that her role had diminished with Chan while Johnson, a modern dance teacher who works with other skaters, had taken on a greater role. Chan finished second behind Takahashi at the World Team Trophy, his first loss in a major event since the Cup of Russia in 2010. ’ ’ ’

Ive got to admit, when I heard Casey Janssen was going on the disabled list with a lower back strain, the first thought running through my mind was here we go again. It seemed just like the past two seasons, where an onslaught of injuries derailed both seasons. At least this time, the injury to the veteran closer doesnt appear to be that series and if there is any area the Blue Jays have depth in its the pen. For now, at least, Sergio Santos, whos had to deal with two injury-plagued seasons of his own since coming back to the Jays, will get the chance to close. I did a little digging and found out that only four of the 15 teams in the American League are starting the season with the same closer they had a year ago. That would be Boston with Koji Uehara, the Royals with Greg Holland, Minnesota with Glen Perkins and the Angels with Ernest Fieri. The Red Sox and the Blue Jays, once Janssen gets healthy, will have the same closers. The Yankees, thanks to the retirement of the great Mariano Rivera, have handed the reins over to right-hander David Robertson. Tampa Bay let Fernando Rodney walk as a free agent and then picked up former As closer Grant Balfour and another one-time closer in Heath Bell. Baltimore dealt their star closer Jimmie Johnson to Oakland and then decided to make veteran starter/reliever Tommy Hunter into their closer. For this year, at least, there is far greater closer stability. Only three of the 15 teams – St. Louis, Arizona and the Cubs – are starting with different closers than they had at the beginning of last season. The Reds would actually be a fourth, as Aroldis Chapman is on the disabled list after taking a line drive just above the eye in spring training but he will be back this season. Its no secret; if the Blue Jays are going to contend for a wild card spot at the very least, theyve got to put up a winning record against their own division. If you look at the last four years since Alex Anthopoulos took over as general manager, the Jays have only been above .500 versus the AL East once. They went 39-33 against their own division in 2010, Cito Gastons final year as skipper. That season, Tampa Bay was the only club that finished better without the division at 42-30. In 2011, they went 33-39, in 2012 they were 29-43, and last year they went 30-46, which was the worst of the five teams within the division. Over that four year span within the East, Tampa has had the best record, averaging 42 wins per season and never worse than second best in terms of wins within the division. The Blue Jays are actually tied with Baltimore for the fewest wins inside the division over the past four years at 131. I found another interesting stat surrounding the last four years – the Blue Jays less than stellar record against left handers. Three of those last four years they have the worst record in the division against southpaws. Only in 2011 were they above .500 versus lefties with a mark of 23-19. Their cumulative record against left-handers over the past four years is 76-93. So, if you cant win enough within your own division and you cant beat lefties consistently, youre not going to be a contender. One final note on the Jays and the American League East. From August 22 on this season, the Jays play 28 of their final 35 against their own division, including six against Boston, seven versus the Yankees, six against Baltimore and nine against Tampa Bay. The only respite is a three game series against the Cubs at home in early September and then a four game series at home; the final week of the season against Seattle. So this is the season the Jays just prove they can beat the East. Better luck against lefties wouldnt hurt either. This is one of the tougher seasons to try and call the American League East, but right now Tampa Bay looks like the class of the division followed by the Yankees (if Tanaka and Pineda are for real), Red Sox, Blue Jays and Orioles, though if those two flip-flopped it wouldnt surprise me either. Check me in October. I mentioned former Blue Jays catcher Yan Gomes in my last article. Cleveland obviously is impressed with the first Brazilian ever to make it to the Majors. They signed him to a six-year deal that included two option years worth $23 million. I cant ever remember a team trading two catchers as the Jays did in the same off-season – Gomes and Travis DArnaud – and have them both become number one catchers so quickly. Its headed for a much quieter conclusion. As the Kings and guard Jimmer Fredette worked toward reaching a buyout of his contract, the former BYU sensation was not in attendance for Tuesday nights 129-103 loss to the Houston Rockets. Kings coach Michael Malone said the team advised Fredette to stay home until a resolution is reached. Malone said he wished Fredette well and believes the third-year guard can carve out an NBA career somewhere — just not in Sacramento. “For whatever reason, Jimmer was never able to find success, whether they were unrealistic expectations from his college career or whatever it was,” Malone said. “But he just wasnt able to play to the level that everybody wanted him to play, which is somewhat maybe unrealistic. Maybe we have to temper our expectations for Jimmer and let him just become a solid NBA player. And theres nothing wrong with that.” Fredette, who turned 25 years old Tuesday, is making about $2.4 million this season. He will be a free agent if — and most likely when — he clears waivers. Kings general manager Pete DAlessandro told reporters at the teams morning shootaround that he was approached by Fredettes representatives about a buyout. He said Fredette no longer fits into the teams plans but Kings owner Vivek Ranadive “loves Jimmer and wants to do the right thing by Jimmer. Were just talking about things at this point. Theres nothing done at this point.” A person with knowledge of the discussions, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because negotiations were ongoing, said the sides hoped to finalize an agreement by the end of the week. Yahoo Sports first reported the buyout talks. Fredettes locker at the arena also was cleared out. Fredette was drafted 10th overall in 2011 after dazzling at BYU, where he won The Associated Press player of the year award his senior season. Fredette never lived up to the fanfare in Sacramento, though the franchises instability — playing for three different coaches, two different ownership groups and constant relocation chatter — didnt help his cause. Fredette is averaging 5.dddddddddddd9 points and 11.3 minutes this season, shooting 47.5 per cent from the floor and 49.3 per cent from 3-point range. For his career, hes averaging seven points, 1.5 assists and 1.1 rebounds while shooting 41.6 per cent overall, including 40 per cent from beyond the arc. But the same concerns some scouts had about Fredette when he entered the league — his defence, ball-handling skills and ability to score off the ball against bigger and more athletic defenders — persist. “Every time he shot it, I thought the ball was going in. I will say that,” Malone said. Fredettes time in Californias capital city has been nearing an end since the Kings decided not to pick up a team option before this season on his contract for the 2014-15 season. Sacramento also tried to move Fredette before last weeks trade deadline but couldnt get any suitable deals. Since Sacramento traded Marcus Thornton to Brooklyn for Jason Terry and Reggie Evans last week, Malone promised to use the remainder of the season to give rookie guards Ben McLemore and Ray McCallum more playing time. That move buried Fredette even further on the bench. Fredette led the nation in scoring at 28.5 points per game and guided BYU to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament as a senior. Big performances in big games had NBA stars tweeting his name, President Barack Obama mentioning him while filling out his bracket and college basketball fans in a frenzy. The Kings acquired him in a draft-day trade with Milwaukee as the 10th overall pick. Fans have remained incredibly vocal about Fredette, often screaming at games for him to play more — and cheering louder for him than other reserves when he finally enters. . Paul Westphal was the only one of Fredettes three coaches committed to giving him extended minutes. Even that didnt last long. Westphal was fired after a 2-5 start in Fredettes rookie season. Keith Smart and Malone both opted to go away from Fredette in favour of other guards, most notably Isaiah Thomas, who has outplayed Fredette since their rookie season. “Jimmer knows how to play, hes a worker, hes a great kid,” Malone said. “And I just hope that he goes to a team that allows him to play and put him in a position to have success and maybe he can catch on with somebody.” ’ ’ ’

CALGARY – Players on both sides of the football look to either establish or re-establish themselves as impact players in the CFL when the Calgary Stampeders host the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday. Calgarys Bo Levi Mitchell and Montreals Troy Smith will be the starting quarterbacks in a CFL season-opener for the first time in their careers. Both want to reinforce their No. 1 status. You can watch the game live in the first half of a doubleheader on TSN and TSN GO at 3:00pm et/Noon pt. or listen to the game live on TSN Radio 690 Montreal. Former NFL star Chad Johnson will begin the revival of his football career as an Alouettes receiver. Prominent Stampeder receiver Nik Lewis is back after missing over half of last season with a broken leg. The 32-year-old slotback feels he has something to prove. The sentiment can also apply to Tom Higgins, who returns as a CFL head coach with Montreal after six years working as the leagues director of officiating. His last coaching stint was with the Stampeders from 2005 to 2007 and Calgarys record in his final season was 7-10-1. Its serendipitous his first game back will be at McMahon. “When you think about, why not?” Higgins said Friday. “I knew how to get here. The bus driver went the wrong way and I said no, no, you make a right here.” Theres also players still feeling out their new teams such as Josh Bell, a former Lion who will make his Stampeder debut at starting safety Saturday. “I want to see how we adjust really when we have success and when we dont have success,” Bell said. “How do we adjust? Thats the biggest thing in football.” The Stampeders topped the CFL with a 14-4 record last season, but were upset 35-13 at home in the West Division final by the eventual Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Montreal Alouettes went 8-10 and lost 19-16 in the East semifinal to Hamilton. Star quarterback Anthony Calvillo missed the final 10 games of the season with a concussion and subsequently retired in the off-season. Smith, a former Heisman Trophy winner with Ohio State, got a crash course in CFL football going 2-1 to conclude the season. “What you do know about Troy is he brings a level of leadership, he has a very strong arm and hopefully he has a cast around him that he doesnt have to carry the football team,” Higgins said. “If we do our job properly, hopefully we can spread that football around enough that he doesnt always feel he has to be on top of his game for us to win.” Mitchell won his three starts and came off the bench to win another in 2014. Stampeders coach and general manager John Hufnagel handed the 24-year-old the ball for the opener, but indicated he could have just as easily given it to Drew Tate. “It was a photo finish between he and Drew,” Hufnagel said. “I said earlier in the week when I made the decision both quarterbacks will play football for us this year. It just so happens Bo is getting the first start.” “He has earned the opportunity to play. Hes won every game hes played as a Calgary Stampeder, so thats not a bad track record.” Both Mitchell and Smith recognize opportunities to be a CFL starter are limited and they must perform to earn more. “Every game, every play, every snap, every rep is concreting or cementing who you are,” Smith said. Added Mitchell: “Now that Ive been given the job, Im going to make sure I keep it, run with it and have a lot of fun.” Lewis broke his fibula Aug. 17 and did not play again in 2013. It was the first time in a decade as a Stampeder he was unable to produce over 1,000 receiving yards. Lewis was annoyed Friday that hed been made a designated international for Saturday, which could limit the slotbacks playing time because he cant replace a Canadian on the field. “I dont make these decisions. I just play football,” Lewis said. "In this business, its what have you done lately. Last year, I wasnt able to play, so Ive got to continue to go out and get better and prove that I can play. “Ive never had an injury like I had last year, so I am so motivated to get back on the field and just show it is possible. Maybe Week 1, well unleash the beast.” Stampeder offensive lineman Dan Federkeil will sit out Saturdays game. He took a hit to the neck in practice this week and has had a concussion before. Hufnagel wants to be cautious with the Medicine Hat, Alta., native. So with internationals Stanley Bryant and Edwin Harrison both suiting up on the offensive line, Hufnagel said “it disrupted our ratio a little bit.” “I had to make one of our receivers the DI,” Hufnagel explained. “Nik will be the DI, but were still going to have three on the field and they all are going to have their roles. Its not like Nik wont be playing the game.” Lewis is considered one of the CFLs colourful, and at times controversial, players. Montreals Johnson could join him in that category. The six-time Pro Bowler and one-time “Dancing With the Stars” contestants Twitter posts often include “sensitive material” warnings. He changed surname to Ochocinco in 2008 only to return to Chad Johnson in 2012. He spent 10 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, but hasnt played a game since 2011. The 36-year-old wide receiver wasnt among the handful of Alouettes available to the media at McMahon on Friday. Smith indicated Johnson is still adjusting to the Canadian game. “Chads OK, man hes done great,” the quarterback said. "Hes accepting the different nuances of the game and tried to perfect them the best he could, but his backbone and his foundation will be guys like S.J. Green, guys like Duron Carter and guys like Brandon Whitaker who can give him the ins and outs . . . on things he can do during the game if hes not feeling too up to par with whats going on. “We have an incredible group of veteran guys who do nothing but help tremendously and Ive relied on them also.” . The 33-year-old right-hander was 14-7 with a career-low 3.64 ERA in 28 starts for his hometown San Diego Padres last season. LAS VEGAS — Frank Mir and Roy (Big Country) Nelson may live in the same city but the two heavyweights look worlds apart. At six foot three and 270 pounds, Mir is a freezer-sized slab of muscle. His shirt is a size-19 neck — “and I have a hard time closing it.” The six-foot Nelson is listed at a roly-poly 263 pounds with a belly that looks like it spends more time propping up a bar than a mixed martial arts opponent. But Mir remains just a slight favourite when the two Las Vegas natives square off Saturday in the co-main event of UFC 130 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. “A lot of people underestimate him,” Mir, a former UFC champion, said of Nelson. “Hes a very tough guy. He has decent power in his punches.” The two heavyweights were a study in contrast at the pre-fight news conference Wednesday. Mir (14-5) was elegantly packaged in a natty suit and open-neck shirt (see above) while a scruffy Nelson (16-5) wore a T-shirt with the top of his flowing mullet stuffed in a baseball cap. Mir, 32, and Nelson, 34, went to nearby high schools in Vegas but Mir says he first caught wind of Nelson was when they joined rival gyms 150 metres away in 1999-2000. Today they are friends, but not bosom buddies. “I like Roy, I think he has a very intelligent outlook on a lot of things,” said Mir. “But Im not going to lie to anybody, were not the best of friends. But we have a lot of mutual friends that are very close.” Like their wives. And one of Mirs groomsmen will be in Nelsons corner Saturday night. “That kind of makes it a bit awkward,” Mir said. Still, neither fighter has a problem hitting each other. “If my wife were to get in the ring with me, I would try to knock her out and choke her unconscious,” Mir said, drawing laughs from reporters. “No problem, I would flip the switch instantly.” “Trust me Roys going to try to knock my head off. Im going to try to knock his head off,” he added. “And if I can catch him in a choke, I want him to go to sleep and I guarantee you he would like to take my arm and out it on his mantle.” Mir, who lost to Nelson on points in a 2003 grappling contest, has never tapped in the UFC. And with UFC fighters generally matching their basic purse with a win bonus, theres plenty of incentive to be the last one punching. “If someone tried to rob you for half your paycheque … youd be pretty upset about the situation,” Mir said. “At the end of the day I have more obligation to my children going to private school then I do putting anybody elses kids through private school,” he added. Both Mir and Nelson are dangerous black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Mir broke Tim Sylvias arm in an armbar at UFC 48 in 2004 while Nelson often uses his bulk effectively to control opponents on the ground. Mir and Nelson see the winner of Saturdays fight as the solid No. 2 contender in the heavyweight ranks, with No. 1 to be decided June 11 in Vancouver when Junior Dos Santos and Shane Carwin square off at UFC 130 to see who fights champion Cain Velasquez. Brock Lesnar waits in the wings, depending on his battle with diverticulitis. A rubber match between Mir and Lesnar would be a doozy, given the sparks the first two fights raised. Nelson, meanwhile, is coming off a knee injury suffered in a loss by decision to Dos Santos last time out. He was slated to meet Carwin in January but his opponent suffered a neck injury. Nelson likes to play up his pear shape, sometimes rubbing his ample belly after a win. Asked whether he liked fighting in his home town, he pointed to the food options in the city that never sleeps. “Were in Vegas, everythings open 24/7,” he said with a smile. “So you can go get burgers at any time of the day. You can get it at night.” Mir has a theory about Nelsons gut. Nelson, he reasons, is at a disadvantage if his opponent catches him in a front headlock when he shoots in at the waist for a takedown. “So not only is he carrying my weight, but hes carrying that belly bent over a fulcrum. That does have a limiting factor.” But Mir says despite the stomach, Nelson is a “very well-conditioned athlete.” Maintaining muscle consumes more oxygen than fat tissue, says Mir, who reckons Nelson is actually a 220-pounder carrying an extra 40 pounds of fat. “If he was 260 pounds and jacked, he would actually be worse off for his cardio. … Ive seen a lot of guys that have a little bit of fat on them still have very good cardio. Ive seen a lot of guys that have shaved forearms and veins coming out of their deltoids whose cardio sucks.” Mir, who weighed 248 pounds when he fought Pete Williams in 2002 in the UFC, says his body has just filled out as he has grown older. Plus, years of wrestling have built up his neck and shoulders. Mir told reporters his wife gave him the gears about his body change while watching Mel Gibson in “Mad Max” recently. “She said Look how thin his neck is? Its like you. We were looking at a picture, she was teasing me. You had a pencil neck.” While Mir debuted in the UFC in 2001, it took Nelson a lot longer to join him. He fought in the IFL, Bodog and other circuits before eventually making his way to the Octagon by winning Season 10 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” defeating Kimbo Slice and Brendan Schaub in the process. “I always felt that Roy would have a harder time going into the UFC just because sometimes he doesnt like to work within the system, (he has) a little bit of an authority issue,” Mir said. “Sometimes it causes waves.” Mir also pointed out that Nelson has lost four times outside the UFC. “I cant imagine not being undefeated outside the UFC,” said Mir, noting he beat former Pride stars Mirko (Cro Cop) Filipovic and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Both Mir and Nelson have their own gyms, although Nelson runs his out of his own home. Mir also has his own Suffer line of MMA training equipment. Nelson says Mir has the edge over him when it comes to the business side of MMA. “Im kind of more the blue collar (type). Im the worker bee.” Nelson says he is just competitive and has a “champions spirit.” “I think I have a little bit different heart and demeanour than a lot of other fighters in our division.” Nelson is undeniably hard to stop — only Andrei Arlovski has stopped him by TKO. He took a lot of punishment from Dos Santos, bending but never breaking. And when the fight was over, the Brazilian knew he had been in a fight when he looked into a mirror. After taking a pounding in the first round, a defiant Nelson walked to his corner and gave UFC president Dana White a thumbs up. “It was just like I hope youre excited. Im ready for Round 2.” . Blown save in the ninth inning? No problem. MIAMI — LeBron James has had “preliminary talks” with David Beckham about possibly bringing a Major League Soccer team to Miami. The talks were first reported in the British media and confirmed by the basketball star after the Miami Heats practice Monday. “Theres some interest on both sides,” said James, who already has a small ownership stake in the English club Liverpool through his involvement with Fenway Sports Management. “David has become a good friend of mine over the last few years. And I think it would be great for this city to have a football club for sure. So theres interest on both sides, but its preliminary talks. There (is) some open dialogue.” The Associated Press first reported last month that Beckham, the former England international who ended his playing career in the American professional league, decided to start an MLS expansion club in Miami. Several matters, however, must first be taken care of, including league approval. Beckham scouted some Miami locations last week — for at least the second time — and is looking for investors. Beckham, who played for the Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS, has the right to pay $25 million to start an expansion franchise. But the overall startup costs would far exceed that amount when factoring in other costs such as stadium construction and player acquisitions. “The research is still being made out,” James said. “I think it could be huge. But you never know. I think this is a great town for soccer. Theres a lot of soccer players, theres great youth soccer players here and people love the city as well. So that definitely would help.” South Florida has had an MLS team in the past - the Miami Fusion played in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from 1998 to 2001, before shutting down because of poor attendance. But its surely conceivable that Beckhams star power could make MLS more viable in Miami, and aligning with James certainly will help. Beckham created a buzz last season when he sat courtside for some Heat games, and James often speaks about his appreciation for some of the worlds best players. “Ive grown a great interest in watching the game,” James said. “Its a pretty intense sport. And my kids love it as well. But Ive grown to the point where I know exactly whats going on when Im watching the game.” . Sochi, Russia (SportsNetwork.com) – Speed skating has belonged to the Netherlands at the Sochi Olympics and that did not change on Tuesday. The Dutch swept another event, grabbing three more medals in the mens 10,000 meters at Adler Arena. Jorrit Bergsma was the top finisher in Tuesdays event, setting an Olympic record with a time of 12 minutes, 44.45 seconds in the grueling race. Sven Kramer was 4.57 seconds off Bergsmas time, while Bob de Jong finished at a distant 13:07.19 seconds, 22.74 ticks off Bergsmas incredible time. Still, de Jong earned bronze and gave the Netherlands a total of 19 medals in speed skating during these Olympics. Twelve of those medals have been won by the men. It marked the fourth event in Sochi that the Dutch have swept. The women won all three medals in the 1,500 meters, while the men also filled the podium in the 500 and 5,000 meters. Bergsma claimed a bronze in the mens 5,000 back on Feb. 8, with Kramer taking gold. However, it was the 28-year-old Bergsma coming out on top Tuesday in a repeat of his first-place finish at the 2013 World Single Distances Championships, also held in Sochi. For Kramer, he may view his silver as a disappointment. The 27-year-old, who picked up his sixth Olympic medal with his second of Sochi, was in line to win this event four years ago in Vancouver, but was disqualified for an illegal lane change. It also was the fourth Olympic medal of de Jongs career and each has come in this event. That includes a gold in 2006 and a bronze four years ago. South Koreas Lee Seung-Hoon, who took gold in Vancouver after Kramers DQ, finished fourth on Tuesday with a time of 13:11.68. The 25-year-old Japanese star has officially been posted by his club team, the Rakuten Golden Eagles.Scott Flory isnt looking to break the bank. The new president of the CFL Players Association said Tuesday all the union wants is a fair deal with the league. The two sides are scheduled to resume talks next week on a new collective bargaining agreement. The present deal is set to expire May 30. “All we want is a fair agreement,” Flory said in a telephone interview. “We understand the league . . . players just want a fair share.” These are indeed heady times for the CFL. The league has a new contract extension with athletic apparel giant Reebok. One of its teams (Winnipeg) moved into a new stadium last season and another (Hamilton) is scheduled to do so this year, the same time expansion Ottawa returns and plays at a refurbished facility. Attendance continues to rise and corporate sponsorships remain strong. And then theres the CFLs lucrative television agreement with TSN reportedly worth $43 million annually thats scheduled to kick in this year. CFL commissioner Mark Cohon has repeatedly stated he never discusses CBA negotiations in public. But on Monday he said in a statement the league is committed to “working towards a fair and reasonable agreement with our players. We want to be fair to them and keep our league on the path to being strong as well as stable.” Money will undoubtedly be a hot-button topic when talks resume. The new TV deal alone is more than 2 1/2 times the previous agreement, which was worth $15 million annually. Subsequently, CFL teams can expect more money from the leagues head office. Negotiations between the league and its players have traditionally been amicable. However, theres a persistent belief this time around players will dig in their heels in order to get what they believe is a fair piece of the financial pie. Theres been one strike since the formation of the CFLPA in 1965. It came in 74 and lasted three weeks during training camp before a three-year agreement was signed with no regular-season games lost. Flory reiterated Tuesday that CFL players wont play under terms of the existing CBA. While Flory didnt say so specifically, that suggests training camps wont open in June without a new deal in place. “Theres a lot more things than the financial,” Flory said. "Theres player safety, transitioning and pension items that we want to look at as well. “This is an all-encompassing negotiation but there is a lot of growth going on in the league.” And, Flory said, much of that growth is due to the quality of the on-field product. “The players lay it all on the line week in and week out, game in and game out for not very much,” he said. "They are the most accessible members in the community, they are at charity events and speaking events, guys are everywhere and they deserve a fair share of whats gone on in the success of the league. “There is more people in the stadiums to watch the games. Theres more people watching on TV to watch the players play and I think thats important.” Also worth noting is both sides have a lot riding on these negotiations. If a new agreement cant be reached and a work stoppage ensues, the lleague wouldnt receive any television money.dddddddddddd Conversely, the players wouldnt be paid either. “I cant and will not speak to that,” Flory said when asked about a work stoppage. “We are always willing to meet with the league . . . we want to continue talks and we want to work towards a new collective agreement, there is no doubt about that.” Calgary Stampeders fullback Rob Cote echoed those sentiments. “Every single one of us loves football and wants to play in June,” said the product of Cochrane, Alta. "That is first and foremost. “Its a negotiation. Negotiations start slow and they usually speed up when you (have) a deadline. People tend to procrastinate when theyre negotiating, as Im sure everybody here is aware of. We all want to get a good, fair deal done and were looking forward to playing.” For Stampeders president Gord Norrie, its business as usual. “Were just plodding along like were going to play football and keeping very optimistic,” he said. The six-foot-four, 300-pound Flory replaces former CFL player Mike Morreale as union president. Florys election certainly raised questions about why the union membership would change its leadership heading into a new round of talks with the league. “I am not going to get into conspiracy theories or innuendo,” Flory said politely. “This is a natural course of business that weve done as a players association for the last 40 years . . . I was very fortunate and humbled to be elected president and thats it.” Flory, 37, is well versed in CFLPA business. The Regina native served as an Alouettes player rep for eight years and spent the last four seasons on the unions executive. “I became involved early as a player rep because I wanted to learn the business of the sport,” he said. "We play under the rules on the field and I think its as important, or more important, to know the rules surrounding the game off the field. “I see it (being voted president) as a natural evolution. Its something I wanted to do to serve the players as best I could.” Flory couldnt provide an answer when asked what kind of negotiator he is. His mandate at the bargaining table, though, is crystal clear. “At the end of the day, how I see my role is Im enacting the will of the people,” he said. "Every player in this league who pays dues is my boss and I will do my best to represent them. “They are going to give us our marching orders and were going to execute it. The players are the game . . . Im passionate about the cause of the players,” However, the question remains whether Flory, a three-time Grey Cup champion and nine-time league all-star, can continue to play while being CFLPA president. The last three union presidents — Dan Ferrone, Stu Laird and Morreale — all assumed the job following their playing careers. “Thats a good question,” said Flory, twice named the CFLs outstanding lineman. “Ive already talked to (Alouettes GM) Jim Popp as to my role moving forward and hope to have an announcement by the end of next week.” ’ ’ ’

The Florida Panthers will have an array of options when it comes to the first-overall selection in tonights NHL Draft. According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the Panthers are considering a number of trade options for the pick, including those from teams picking outside of the top 10 selections. Many of those offers are believed to be centred around current NHL players. Dreger adds that the Panthers do not plan on making their decision on whether to trade the top pick on the draft floor, and therefore will likely make a decision prior to the kick-off of the first round. The Buffalo Sabres and Edmonton Oilers are also both content staying at second and third overall, respectively, according to Dreger. You can watch the draft live on TSN and TSN GO at 7pm et/4pm pt. James Reimer will likely start in goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday when they face the Washington Capitals in a rare afternoon game. Jonathan Bernier left Thursdays game against the Los Angeles Kings with a lower-body injury and was replaced by Reimer, who stopped every shot he faced to pick up the 3-2 victory. Bernier did not practice on Saturday and the club recalled netminder Drew MacIntyre from the AHLs Toronto Marlies. Head coach Randy Carlyle said Bernier got treatment on Saturday and a decision will be made about whether hell need an MRI. “We dont think its that severe, but you always want to make sure,” Carlyle said Saturday. Reimer starting on Sunday would mark just the third time this season hes played in three straight games. His win on Thursday in LA was his first since beating the Colorado Avalanche on Jan. 21 – a stretch of more than 50 days between victories. “You can work on stuff in practice but to get in a groove, you got to get in there on multiple nights; feel the game, feel the flow,” said Reimer. Also absent from Saturdays practice was defecneman Dion Phaneuf. The team captain has been dealing with “bumps and bruises” missing a practice for “maintenance” last week and is now dealing with a bad case of the flu. Carlyle called Phaneuf “probable” for Sundays game in Washington and expects him to get an IV for fluids. wholesale jerseys . No way, absolutely no way. ESPN, citing anonymous sources, reported Tuesday that Darren Erman secretly recorded coaches meetings, conversations between coaches and players, and informal discussions. Its unclear what Erman did with the alleged recordings. Golden State fired Erman on April 5 for what the team called a “violation of company policy.” The Warriors neither confirmed nor denied the report Tuesday, saying only that they “were unaware of the violation, and when made aware, we took immediate action.” Erman already has landed a job with another team. A spokesman for the Boston Celtics confirmed to The Associated Press that the team hired Erman as an NBA scout. Erman was in his third season with the Warriors after spending four years with the Celtics, where he worked under Doc Rivers, who is now the coach of the Los Angeles Clippers. Erman also coached the Warriors summer league championship team in Las Vegas last year.dddddddddddd Erman was the second assistant dismissed from Mark Jacksons staff this season. Jackson reassigned Brian Scalabrine — a former Celtics player — to the teams NBA Development League affiliate in Santa Cruz on March 25 because of what Jackson called a “difference in philosophies.” At Golden States shootaround before Game 5 in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Jackson declined comment when asked about the reports but said Erman is “an outstanding coach who did a great job.” Jackson also reiterated that the moves involving two of his assistants — which have fueled discussion about his own job status after the season — are not representative of a dysfunctional atmosphere on his staff. “There was no dysfunction,” Jackson said. "I had a great staff. Its been a great year, and we are 2-2 with an opportunity to win Game 5 against this Clippers team. Its been a great year for us on the court, and we are together as a staff and as a team. Nothing has changed. “You can make a mistake. That doesnt mean thats my dysfunction. Its documented.” ’ ’ ’

NYON, Switzerland – Europes top football clubs collectively lost more than C1.6 billion ($2 billion) in 2010 and their debts are still rising despite the imminent arrival of sanctions for overspending. With wealthy owners keen to buy success by pumping massive amounts into buying top players, accounts from about 650 clubs reveal 56 per cent lost money in the 2010 financial year, and their total debt was C8.4 billion ($10.9 billion). UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said it was “a last wake-up call” with clubs having been subject to UEFAs financial fair play monitoring since July 2011. “We must end this negative spiral and gamble for success,” Infantino told reporters at a briefing. UEFAs study showed clubs combined annual loss rose 36 per cent, about C400 million ($520 million), on 2009 figures. This was despite rising revenues totalling C12.8 billion ($16.6 billion) for top-tier European clubs, an increased income of 6.6 per cent. Still, UEFAs research showed that richer and more successful clubs were more likely to spend and lose money. Of more than 200 clubs playing in UEFAs Champions League and Europa League competitions two years ago, 65 per cent spent more than they earned. Three out of every four clubs earning more than C50 million ($65 million) annually also recorded a loss. “Clubs tend to spend more in order to obtain a competitive advantage,” said Andrea Traverso, the head of UEFAs financial fair play project. UEFA says clubs who overspend in an initial two-year monitoring period can be excluded from its competitions from the 2014-15 season. Financial fair play (FFP) rules allow clubs to make a total loss of C5 million ($6.5 million) in the first assessment period, or up to C45 million ($58 million) if a wealthy owner makes a one-off donation to wipe out losses. UEFA will phase in tighter monitoring rules in future years. UEFA acknowledged that 13 clubs, including several from England, would have failed its break-even tests on their 2010 accounts. The clubs were not identified. UEFA points to the fact that 31 clubs, including four this season, have been refused entry to its two main club competitions since financial licensing was introduced in 2004. However, clubs barred this season were from the small-market leagues of Ireland, Kazakhstan, Lithuania and Romania. Skepticism has grown over UEFAs willingness to take on big-spending clubs such as Premier League leader Manchester City, whose owners from Abu Dhabi funded a 194.9-million-pound (then $318 million) loss for 2010-11, the final season before FFP took effect. French league leader Paris Saint-Germain spent C82 million ($107 million) on players last off-season after being bought by Qatari owners. UEFAs project was backed by Jean-Michel Aulas, the president of Lyon whose standing in France is threatened by PSGs revival. Aulas described a “dichotomy” between clubs spending “easy money and money for investment.” “Tomorrows paradigm (for clubs) must be built on building stadiums and building youth academies — tangible assets that can benefit football in general,” Aulas said.
